Carefree child’s dash on edge of apartment block It centres on a five-year-old girl, skipping along a fourthfloor ledge, half-a-metre wide and 25 metres high, on the side of a 12-floor apartment block, opposite the one in which the holiday-maker was staying. Without a care in the world, having climbed through a window, she headed towards the balcony of the home where she lives with her family. However, once she reached it, the little girl realised she couldn’t clamber on to the balcony, so she performed an about-turn, returning to the window. Her father’s Finnish partner was said to be taking a shower at the time, but the dad’s whereabouts were not known. Adeje’s Local Police have presented a report, along with the video, to the judicial authorities at Arona court house. The authorities believe that legal proceedings should be instigated, along with the footage, because of the horrific images, all involving the youngster, who could easily have slipped and fallen to her death from the ledge. The police report was made after the video’s circulation
across social media, stretching as far as Mexico, Argentina and Japan, and shared by around one million viewers. Community representatives complained to the Local Police last Sunday. But by then, the images were already causing concern for the thousands who had watched the video. The British tourist, who shot the video from his balcony, circulated it on social media the next day. He hasn’t yet been identified or located, but he uploaded the images on a British website, originally. The police have since taken statements from the child’s parents, as well as other people residing in the community. They interviewed the child’s Slovakian father on Tuesday, along with his partner, who was, say sources, taking a shower when the little girl decided to tempt fate! The mind-blowing footage was posted on the “I Love Tenerife” Facebook group, and an accompanying caption read: “OMG! This toddler managed to climb out of this building window whilst the parents were taking a shower.”

Oldest Canarian hotel will reopen, after £21.4m refit
GRAN Canaria’s fivestar Santa Catalina hotel in Las Palmas, which is the oldest in the Canary Islands, is about to re-open, following a €21.4m restoration project. Now under the management of the Barceló Hotel Group, which held the hotel’s soft launch in November, it will be fully completed and re-opened this month.
The hotel, dating back to 1890 and designed by British architect James MacLaren, has attracted the likes of Winston Churchill, Agatha Christie and Prince Charles as guests, and is regarded as a landmark. With 204 rooms, a top restaurant and a rooftop infinity pool, the hotel is in walking distance of Las Canteras beach and the city’s main attractions. Santa Catalina also overlooks Doramas Park, with its tree-lined gardens, ponds, wildlife and waterfalls. The hotel’s flagship restau-
rant is Poemas, by the Padrón brothers, under the leadership of Juan Carlos and Jonathan Padrón, the only Michelin-starred chefs of Canarian origin. Santa Catalina also houses artwork from renowned Canarian muralists, including Jesús Arencibia, Manuel Martín González and Santiago Santana, and dates back to the 19th century. The hotel also has a wellness centre, which includes a sauna, spa circuit, gym, thermal baths and treatment rooms offering therapy and massage.
Neighbours living in fear of brutal fights! A DRINK-DRIVER, travelling at high speed in his black Fiat Bravo from the Las Galletas direction of Las Rosas, at 3am on New Year’s Day, failed to avoid other vehicles and, eventually, crashed into a tree. The Fiat driver, some 30 years old, collided with one vehicle but couldn’t stop because of his speed, and he then crashed into a stationary Volkswagen Golf, parked in the residential area.
Incredibly, he also ran into a Jeep and a Renault Kangoo, which were also parked. Altogether, six cars featured in the multiple crash, and, needless to say, the driver responsible was breathalysed and tested positive. His driving licence was taken from him, and he will be brought to trial for causing injuries to the driver of the first car he collided with. That same day, at around 7am, two cars ended up embedded, one on top of the other, against a wall adjacent to the El Fraile casino entrance. The cause of the spectacular accident was unknown, but there were no serious injuries.
RESIDENTS in the vicinity of Salamanca, Santa Cruz, are fed up with the constant, brutal, fighting episodes they witness almost every day.
It is a common sight, which most neighbours have seen in the last few months, leaving them feeling unsafe. Just recently, two men were seen fighting like animals, and they continued battling until they were eventually separated. Yet they still carried on threatening and insulting each other. Neighbours, who report these situations frequently, have pleaded with the authorities for police to take
action against the men, saying the situation is totally unacceptable. However, in response to several reports and pleas from the public, Local Police have assured worried neighbours that there will be more officers involved, and the area will be patrolled daily. But locals have said the police need to make their
presence felt at different times throughout the day, because there is usually more trouble whenever they leave the area. However, police say it would be impossible to place officers in the area 24 hours a day, because there is already a lack of Local Police, as well as the National Police, patrolling the Santa Cruz municipality.

PEDRO Sánchez has, officially, regained his Prime Minister title, and King Felipe VI has signed the paperwork, giving his Royal assent to the appointment. The socialist PSOE’s coalition partners, Podemos, had struck a deal with Sánchez, 24 hours after the 10th November election, despite the parties failing to reach an agreement in the previous, April election. But it wasn’t enough. Now, however, Podemos will form an active part of the new government, including running ministries. Full details of appointments will be revealed over the next few days. Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias wept tears of relief and joy when Sánchez made it through the second round of Parliamentary voting, with 167 in favour and 165 against. In the first round, Sánchez needed an outright majority of MPs to vote in his favour: 176 out of 350, which, until four or five years ago, was straightforward. That’s because one of the two main parties would always achieve a majority of seats in a general election. Nowadays, though, with more parties on the scene, a hung Parliament is usually guaranteed, meaning the candidate for Prime Minister must negotiate with all opposition parties to convince

them to vote in his favour. If, as was the case with
Make a note of the date, in full
POLICE in Murcia have issued a strict warning to anyone signing, or filling out, important documents in 2020, because dates this year can be written as 07/01/2020 or, more briefly, 07/01/20. The latter can be doctored easily, however, with an extra two digits to change
the date to 07/01/2012, for example. It is why police are advising that dates be written in their full year form, potentially, to avoid any legal or criminal consequences. Fortunately, the situation will not occur again for more than a century, in 2121!
Sánchez on Sunday, the first round fails to provide a majority in his support, the candidate goes through to a second round 48 hours later, in which he needs just a simple majority, or more Yes than No votes. At this stage, the key is to convince those MPs who do not support the candidate’s presidential bid to abstain, so that the Yes total surpasses the No tally. On Tuesday, however, 18 MPs from the Catalunya Republicans’ ERC left, and the Basque reunification party, EH Bildu, abstained, in accordance with their recent agreement, following negotiations with the PSOE. Votes in favour came from the PSOE’s 120 MPs, together with the Podemos 35, as well as the two members of Podemos breakaway group Más País! They had won seats in the November elections. Valencian regional party Compromís, centrist Nueva Canarias, provincial party Teruel Existe, and the Galicia national party BNG, each with one seat in Parliament, voted in favour of Sánchez, as did all six MPs from the Basque National Party (PNV). Votes against came from the PSOE’s direct rivals, the right-
wing PP, with 88 MPs; centreright Ciudadanos, with 10 MPs; far-right Vox, with 52; Catalunya separatists Junts Per Catalunya (JxCat) with eight; the Navarra-based coalition UPN, with two; pro-secession Catalunyabased outfit CUP, also two; the Asturian Forum (Foro Asturiano), with one; the Canarian Coalition, with one; and the Cantabria Regional Party’s sole MP, despite his pledge to support Sánchez on 10th November. The two-vote margin was extremely narrow, at 167 to 165, but enough to give Spain an elected left-wing government for the first time since November 2011, and for Sánchez to swear allegiance in the presence of the King. Sánchez has actually been in power, either de facto or in a caretaking position, since June 2018, when the PSOE’s no-confidence vote against the then PP government prospered. But with the PSOE holding just 86 seats of the 350 total in Parliament, the smallest minority ever to lead the country, Sánchez and his cabinet found their hands tied. When they were unable to secure enough support
to pass their 2019 budget, Sánchez called a general election to strengthen his mandate, especially in light of the right-wing supporters’ public outcry at having an “unelected” president. This election was held last April, but with the PSOE and Podemos unable to compromise, sufficiently, to reach a coalition deal, or to persuade Podemos to vote in Sánchez’s favour, the second round of the investiture failed, forcing Sánchez to call a repeat election. Now, after four general elections in as many years, over eight months with a caretaking government, 10 months with an extreme minority government, and a period of nearly 12 months with the PP in a caretaking position, the country has political stability, at last! Decisions can be made, budgets signed off, and electoral manifestos turned into reality. It is the first time in Spain’s democratic history that the country has been led by a coalition government, with a deputy president, Pablo Iglesias. So far, though, Spain has never had a female prime minister!

NEWS IN BRIEF Wrong-way driver
Drug-dealer’s New-Year bust
causes a big scare THERE was a scary moment for many drivers using the TF-1 on Wednesday evening when a car was seen in their lane, coming in the opposite direction.
GRAN Canaria’s National Police arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with the sale of illegal drugs. He was detained in San Agustín, after being spotted selling amphetamines and cocaine at a NewYear’s-Eve event. During a body search, the officers found a significant volume of drugs on him, and he has been placed on remand, ahead of his trial.
Head-on crash hurts three
THREE people were injured during the early hours of Tuesday, following a head-on collision on the TF-65 in San Miguel de Abona.
Several calls were made to report the incident to the Guardia Civil, as the grey Toyota Yaris proceeded against the traffic. It was first spotted in Fañabe, and, thanks to the emergency calls made to the Canarian emergency services, the Local Police were dispatched, rapidly. Their aim was to stop the motorway traffic between Adeje and Arona, to prevent a huge accident. But the offending car simply disappeared! Authorities believe the driver might have
taken a wrong turn by not paying attention. Another theory was that it could had been a tourist, unfamiliar with the roads. Either way, though, the incident caused many drivers to show extra vigilance on the TF-1 that evening.
Moroccan couple hid boy in their shopping trolley
The incident happened at around 4am, and a 49-year-old man was injured, along with a woman, 48, and another man, aged 20. The older man had various injuries, fortunately not of a serious nature, but the 20-year-old was left with serious bruising, both internal and external. The woman, also reported to have serious injuries, is thought to be in a critical condition.
Morocco airline’s big switch
MOROCCO’S privately-owned state airline, Royal Air Maroc, will make alterations to its Casablanca-Tenerife route this summer, because it is switching island airports, from North to South. From 25th March, the airline will no longer fly to Tenerife North, formerly known as Los Rodeos. Instead, it will fly to the larger Tenerife South airport, also known as Reina Sofía. Royal Air Maroc Express now operates three flights per week, from Casablanca International Airport to Tenerife North, using its fleet of six ATR 72-600s. In total, Royal Air Maroc and Royal Air Maroc Express fly to six destinations in Spain. As well as Tenerife, they also fly to Barcelona El Prat, Las Palmas, Madrid Barajas, Malaga and Valencia Manises.

A MOROCCAN couple were arrested last Monday for trying to smuggle a 10-year-old Palestinian boy into Spain, inside a shopping trolley. The unnamed woman, 38, and her 34-yearold companion, were stopped by police at the Melilla-Morocco border on Monday, after officers noticed that the cart seemed to weigh heavier than it should. They removed the layers of groceries to discover a 10-year-old Palestinian boy clutching onto his documents.
The boy, who was in good health, was handed over to his mother, who was in the Temporary Immigrant Stay Centre (CETI), in the Spanish territory of Melilla. The attempted smugglers were arrested at around 1pm at the Beni Enzar checking point. They were charged with “violating the rights of foreign citizens” and appeared before a court on Tuesday. The border between Morocco and Spain, which is a hotbed for smugglers, has seen migrants go to desperate lengths for a chance to reach Europe. In May 2019, one migrant was found hiding behind the dashboard of a car, as it tried to pass through Melilla.

World’s-longest chocolate turrón, eaten by shoppers
Smart police heroes save life of suicidal youngster A CHOCOLATE turron, the longest-ever made, officially, has been unveiled in an Extremadura town, and locals who fancy a bite have only to donate a kilo of groceries to the food bank. Villanueva de la Serena (Badajoz province), close to the Portuguese border, was nominated as the 2020 Culinary Capital of its region, and created a mammoth bar of traditional festive
confectionery as the first of many, planned, food-based activities for the year ahead. Master chocolatier Justo Almendrote and baker Juan Antonio Parejo are expecting to beat the world record with their turrón in terms of length. It measures 42 metres (137ft 9in) and is enough to provide a typical, 200-gram bar, to 1,000 people. This is the fifth giant turrón the pair have made, although, until now, their record was 40 metres (131ft 3in). Although it took months of planning, the turrón was put together in a morning – and it is decorated with the Villanueva de la Serena coat of arms.
Using 100 litres of cream and 30 kilos of crunchy additives – biscuit and hazelnuts – plus oranges and over 200 kilos of dark chocolate at 65% cocoa, all lactose-free and with various parts suitable for those with nut and gluten allergies, the turrón will be given away in chunks to whoever wants a piece. To get a free bar from the longest turrón in the world, the ‘price’ is providing a kilo of non-perishable food for the confectionery creators to give to the local food bank. The photograph shows the result of their handiwork, and is taken by Villanueva de la Serena town council.
10,000 dangerous fake toys seized by concerned police THE National Police seized nearly 10,000 counterfeit toys, which arrived on shipping vessels to ports in Spain, and posed a serious health-and-safety risk, especially to children.
The treasure trove was detected during a search of premises at Torredelcampo, in Jaén, and the Madrid area of Fuenlabrada, which was earmarked for local shops and department stores across the country, in time for last Monday’s Three Kings’ Day. Officers said the items, all made in China, were deemed to be excellent replicas of expensive toys, sold from prestigious brands such as Disney, Nickelodeon, Mattel and Real Madrid, among others. They also maintained that the goods posed a high risk to the health and safety of children, because extremely-harmful materials were used in their manufacture. In addition, the toys did not undertake the strict controls enforced by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), a worldwide federation for quality, health and hygiene, and they could damage further the health of those youngsters receiving them. The operation was launched in
November after two renowned toy companies alerted police that Jaén had a significant number of counterfeit goods circulating in the area. After their investigative work, officers discovered that the fake items had arrived in an assortment of shipping containers into Spain from China by boat, headed by a local father and son from Torredelcampo. The National Police are confident that all the dangerous goods have now been removed from shop shelves. But they still issued a warning for parents making that special purchase for last Monday’s Three Kings Day, to apply the utmost caution.
LOCAL Police in Torremolinos saved the life of a suicidal teenager, who was attempting to end his life by jumping off a local bridge, spanning the motorway. The youngster was holding on to the railing of a bridge over the AP-7 motorway, by two fingers on one hand, when police found him. He had, apparently, announced his suicide moments earlier on a WhatsApp group, while drivers alerted authorities to the boy climbing over the railing. The intense rescue happened at around 12.40pm, and four
Local Police, by chance, patrolling nearby, raced to the scene. They attempted to speak with the youngster, but he wouldn’t reply. However, according to police, his actions indicated that he was about to jump into the traffic. He was, reportedly, on tip-toes, and, at one point leaning on one foot. While they talked with him, the officers approached the teenager stealthily until they were close enough to pounce on him and pull him to safety. All four officers jumped on him at the very moment the boy let go of the railing, and saved his life, said witnesses. He was taken to mentalhealth specialists in Malaga for treatment.

Petrol-station robber just can’t get his fill!
A 47-YEAR-OLD man has been detained by the National Police in Telde, Gran Canaria, charged with breaking and entering Las Remudas petrol station. The man, who already has a police record, with some 46 charges to his name, was nabbed this time when a silent alarm was triggered. Workers alerted the police headquarters, and the alarm enabled officers to surprise the suspect while he was already inside the premises. They actually witnessed him carrying a box, holding an excessive number of stolen items. He had broken into the premises by smashing a window. But when he caught sight of the officers,
he dropped the box and ran off, only for the police to chase him. The man ran in the direction of La Garita, crossing the busy lanes on the GC1 motorway in the process. But officers finally caught him, and he was arrested and charged. Another patrol car arrived at the petrol station, with officers verifying the burglary. They also confirmed that the man had entered the premises by smashing a window with a small rock. They then discovered the box, and, on closer inspection, they found that it was filled with several items, comprising 83 cartons of cigarettes, several packets of condoms, and some electrical devices. Once the items were seized, they were returned to their rightful owner.

Traffic laws will now target drunk drivers
SPAIN’S traffic regulatory body is hoping to capitalise on the newly-formed Spanish Government, and implement a raft of new measures this year. Plans from the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) were thwarted throughout 2019 because of political instability, which saw two
general elections, as well as congress time taken up by political in-fighting. But urgent measures are now expected to be rolled out as soon as the Pedro Sanchez Government is up and running, with a crackdown on scooters, driving under the influence and using mobile phones at the wheel. The DGT is pushing for mobile phone-users to lose six points from the licence (Spanish licences allow 12) if caught by helicopter of traffic police. New legislation to control the
boom of personal, mobility vehicles will also see a ban on scooters using main roads, and will require licences and insurance. Also on the table are new reforms to boost the control and punishments for driving under the influence. Other measures to be discussed will be a 30km/h limit on all single carriageways in Spanish cities, as well as reforms to driving theory tests, as well as measures to help vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists.

Migrants in Spain total around 200 at weekend UP to 200 migrants, spread among seven boats, arrived at the Spanish provinces of the Canary Islands, Murcia, Cadiz and Alicante, on the first weekend of 2020.
Europa Press said the first group, comprising at least 28 people, including a child and a woman of North African origin, were rescued near Cadiz on the Saturday. The same day, Salvamento Maritimo intercepted a boat in Alicante’s Santa Pola Beach, carrying 16 Algerian men. One of them had to be taken to the General Hospital. In Cartagena, three boats were intercepted by the Sociedad de Salvamento y Seguridad Marítima, also known as SASEMAR. There was a total of 36 Algerian migrants, including two women and a minor, all supported by the Red Cross. On Sunday, the emergency services rescued and treated 10 migrants, made up of

nine men, including a minor, and one woman. They were on a boat which had been intercepted in Cabo de Palos, Murcia. Also, on the same day, Salvamento Maritimo rescued around 44 migrants from south of the Sahara, in an inflatable boat, including five young children, near the coast of Gran Tarajal, in Fuerteventura. Salvamento Maritimo also reported rescuing 59 migrants in a boat near Gran Canaria, but the Red Cross reported that one of them had died. It was the first death recorded
in 2020 by a person trying to reach the Canary coast. The Red Cross also reported that a boat with some 14 people was intercepted along the Alicante coast. These 197 migrants added to the 150 migrants who arrived on Friday, 3rd January in over 15 ships, in the waters of the Canary Islands, Andalusia, Murcia and Alicante, says the Europa Press. In addition, a small patera arrived in North Lanzarote on Monday night, with three adults and 12 minors aboard. A second migrants’ boat was detected off the Haria
coastline by the Canarian emergency services the following morning, just before 1am. On board the small, wooden vessel were 15 people, comprising two men and a woman, along with 12 male minors. Once their small boat had been intercepted, two minors were taken to hospital for treatment, following complications arising from the crossing. Both youngsters were suffering severe sickness, but the remainder on board the boat all appeared healthy.
THE Canary Islands Government has not renewed the law, which regulated free medicine to pensioners with incomes lower than €18,000 per year. Its subsidy ended on 31st December, which means that, from 1st January, the old folk must all pay the full sum, up to the cap set by their health card. A Health Ministry statement said the established contribution was 10% of the price of the prescribed medications, with a maximum, monthly contribution limited to €8.23.

THIS New Year, make sure you check that your tax planning, investments, pensions and estate planning are all on track, to protect your family’s long-term wealth. Looking ahead Now that Boris Johnson holds a majority, UK government, we start 2020 with a likely Brexit due date of 31st January. While the transition period should run until the end of December, during which things should, generally, be unchanged for expatriates in Spain, there is no certainty beyond this. With the clock ticking, financial-planning reviews are particularly important, to keep ahead of any developments
THE Spanish Government has predicted a boost for the country’s economy at the start of the new decade, when January sales are expected to make a positive impact on trade.
As the Three Kings’ Day brought an end to the country’s festive celebrations on Monday, many people have been hunting bargain buys. Spain is home to a plethora of home-grown brands and department stores, high up on the list of favourites for Spaniards, tourists and the thousands of European expats. Inditex, one of the world’s largest fashion retailers, with eight distinct brands, have already begun their sales, and a study conducted by Fintonic Technology predicts that the multi-million-euro group will pull in its highest profits this week. Spain’s largest department store, El Corte Ingles, is also set for a good start to the month, because its online store has already begun its January sales, offering whopping 50% discounts. Tendam, one of Europe’s leading fashion retailers, established in 1880 as a family-run haberdashery store in Madrid, also made a quick start to its January sales, which began online

Resolve to review your 2020 financial planning that may affect you, for better or worse. Tax planning You need to make sure you know where you are resident for tax purposes, especially if you are new to Spain, or still spend time in the UK. You then want to structure your investments and wealth in the most suitable way, to minimise taxation - here, the UK, and wherever you have financial interests - while meeting your obligations. With today’s, global, tax transparency, it is more important than ever to get this right. Remember, in extreme cases, tax evasion can result in prosecution, even if it is unintentional. Cross-border tax planning is complex, so take specialist advice to achieve peace of mind, and potentially significant tax savings. investments. Are they actually better suited to a UK resident? Do they meet your risk/ reward appetite? Have you taken advantage of suitable, tax-efficient opportunities in Spain? Successful investing is about having a strategy, specifically based around your personal circumstances, time horizon, needs, aims and risk tolerance. You should ensure you have adequate diversification to avoid over-exposure to any given country (including the UK), asset type, sector or company. Explore investment structures that allow multicurrency flexibility, to help minimise exchange-rate risk. Pensions Today’s pension landscape offers more choice than ever, but this may change with Brexit. For example, taxfree transfers to Qualified Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS) in the EU/EEA may be targeted, once the UK sheds its EU
Spanish economy to be boosted by bargain-hunters
obligations. Carefully weigh up your options, alongside the tax implications in Spain and the UK, to establish the best course of action for you. Make sure you take regulated advice to protect against pension scams, and do what is right for your personal circumstances and aims. Estate planning It is vital to review your estate planning when living in Spain, as both succession law, and tax, work very differently from the UK. Are you aware, for example, that Spain’s “forced-heirship” rules could automatically pass a significant proportion of your worldwide estate to your direct family, whatever your intentions? You can specify in your will for the EU regulation “Brussels IV” to apply relevant British law to your estate, instead, but take care to understand your options, and any tax implications. Your estate plan should be
set up to achieve your wishes in the most-tax-efficient way possible. If you remain UK domiciled, as many expatriates do, you continue to be liable for UK inheritance tax, so you should plan to reduce this liability for your heirs. To bring all these complex elements together, and avoid missing out on suitable opportunities, take expert, cross-border advice. Spending time on a financial health-check, now, can secure peace of mind that you and your family are in the best position to enjoy a prosperous 2020, and beyond. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices, which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. Jobless figure falling, but it’s nothing to rave about
FIGURES released by the Employment Ministry show that there were 384,373 more registered workers in Spain last month than in December 2018.
at the start of the year. The group, which owns big brands, including Cortefiel, Pedro del Hierro, Springfield, Women’secret and Fifty Factory, is hoping to exceed its annual revenue this year, which saw tax profits surpassing €80.8m in 2018. For the small-to-medium sized businesses, which, in the last few years have impacted negatively because of the rise in online sales and new consumer patterns, owners have expressed mixed
expectations over these winter sales. For some, it can prove to be an important period for trade, in which shoppers are enticed into their stores, in the hope of wrangling a good deal. However, for many others, the pressure to compete with big-name brands forces owners to cut down on their costs of goods. But for those whose accounts are already dwindling, the January sales can threaten their survival.
This means the country’s total workforce stands at 19.4m, although the actual employment increase is the lowest in six years. Not since 2013, a year in which employment rates took a hammering from the last recession, has there been such a small increase. Steady rises continued since then until last summer, when the number of those registered on the Social Security as “employed” hit record levels. However, signs of exhaustion have been reported, and a similarly-weak decrease has also been registered in unemployment levels. In the last 12 months, the jobless total has fallen by 38,692 people, the lowest drop since 2012. The drop in unemployment also slowed down locally, and Malaga took until last year to reduce its figure by 2,764. That meant 148,485 were registered as unemployed at the end of the year, a drop of 1.83%, which was 50% of the 2018 total. Despite the slowdown, however, Malaga is still reducing its number of unemployed at a more rapid rate than Andalucia (-1.37%) and Spain as a whole (-1.21%).

Good Omens
Michael Sheen and David Tennant lead an all-star cast in Good Omens, a six-part humorous fantasy drama. Equal parts humour and horror, fantasy and drama, this 6 x 1 hour series is written by Neil Gaiman and is based on the well-loved and internationally bestselling novel Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Gaiman. Sheen stars as the fussy angel / rare-book dealer Aziraphale, while Tennant plays his opposite number, the fast-living demon Crowley, both of whom have lived among Earth’s mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle and of each other. So it’s really terrible news for both of them that, if Heaven and Hell have their way, the world will end on Saturday. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist… Aziraphale and Crowley agree to join forces in order to prevent Armageddon. They attempt to raise the Antichrist in a balanced and human way, but are they focusing their efforts in the right direction?
Tuesday 14th January, ITV1, 19.30 “It can be testing at times, but we are living the dream, as they say.” - Craig Pearson, Metro driver This four-part documentary series for ITV follows life on the Tyne and Wear Metro – the first time cameras have been allowed in-depth behind the scenes at the UK’s biggest metro system outside London. The Metro is 48 miles long, with passengers making 37 million journeys a year around Newcastle, Sunderland, Gateshead, North and South Tyneside. Filmed over the busy Summer of 2019 as the Metro approached its 40th birthday, cameras show some of its 1,100 staff dealing with the biggest events of the year – including the Great North Run and the Spice Girls reunion concert in Sunderland. With 60 stations the Tyne and Wear Metro serves 100,000 passengers a day and its trains travel 10,000 miles a day. But, as the series reveals, it’s a service that is often under fire and stretched to its limits as, ahead of a new fleet being delivered, it currently operates with trains that are as old as the Metro itself. This series follows the highs and lows of the summer and provides a vivid insight into the daily trials and tribulations for staff. Episode 1: In the first episode, it’s the start of the Summer, and the Metro staff brace themselves for one of the busiest days of the year. The Spice Girls are in town as part of their comeback world tour, meaning 50,000 fans from far and wide will be descending on Sunderland, putting additional pressure on the Metro’s already stretched resources. For staff, all the chat is about the Girl Power megastars. Carrie Hall, from the Metro’s depot team, says: “Very young at the time, but I was a huge Spice Girls fan, I saw them the first time around. Yeah, that was one of the best nights of my life.” Every one of the Metro’s ageing fleet of trains will be needed to cope with the higher than usual number of passengers – meaning that planning has to be spot on so the system doesn’t grind to a halt. The drama unfolds across the day as head of operations Wayne Dixon spots a potential problem with an overhead line. Meanwhile, there’s an anxious call to the Metro control room - two Spice Girl fans have lost their tickets and it looks like they won’t be getting to the concert of a lifetime.

The series follows Gary King (Tom Davis) and love of his life Terri (Laura Checkley) as they bowl through family life in suburbia. Gary’s quest to impress the neighbours and fill his dad’s big shoes might be more successful if he wasn’t such a drama queen. But there’s always a lot of love around in Butterchurn Crescent. Can Gary muster up the courage to sack the terrifying Benson, or will his dad, Big Gary, have to get involved? Gary sets up a one-to-one meet with Benson at his local, the roughest pub in the area, but not before he has ‘rehearsed’ the chat with Terri at home. Meanwhile, young Teddy King has his first ever date with the coolest girl down ‘The Dave’, Rose Ferdinando. His mum Terri is so keen to impress Rose’s mum, Chloe, on the dinner date that she borrows a brand new Range Rover from a friend and pretends that it’s her own.
hings take a gruesome turn when Ferrabees Circus comes to town, bringing with it a chain of sinister clown sightings, threatening notes and deathly dangerous circus acts. Barnaby will have to face up to his fears in order to solve the case. Ferrabee’s Circus is back in town! But owner Joe and his troupe receive a less than warm welcome when a string of scary clown appearances around the village sours the reputation of the circus. Hoping to make a permanent base on the land Joe and his estranged brother Curtis share proves to be harder than Joe had once thought. Especially when Curtis begins to do everything in his power to turf the circus off the land. Joe’s circus is failing, and employee and lifelong friend Daniella is more than aware of this. Losing her own sister Elsa during a duet trapeze act accident, Daniella has relied on the circus as her family and doesn’t want to see it fail. So when her husband and lead clown Terry announces he’s jumping ship to join a different circus, Daniella chooses to remain loyal to Ferrabee’s. The circus faces its biggest hurdle when during a clown act, performer Terry is shot and killed live on stage in front of the audience! His stage partner Les is immediately blamed for the crime; the gun was in his hands and was witnessed by a crowd full of people. On closer inspection Barnaby and Winter realise that his was not the gun that killed Terry – someone who knew the act well must have shot him at the same time Les fired his gun, which only contained blanks. When footage is uncovered that shows a blurred figure lurking at the back of the Big Top on the day of Terry’s murder, our Detectives think they may have a new lead for their killer. But Barnaby and Winter are left baffled when another body turns up – this time at the abattoir neighbouring the circus. The Police begin to try and find what could possibly connect the two murders, whilst simultaneously trying to identify a mystery clown who is still terrifying the local residents... all of which leaves Barnaby forced to face his own fears...

Bradley Walsh & Son: Breaking Dad In episode two, Bradley and Barney leave the beaches of Florida behind and head north into the mountains of Georgia, hoping for a sighting of the legendary Big Foot. True to form, Bradley is a more than a little sceptical: “I’ve never heard so much toffee in my life.” First they arrive at Tallulah Falls, featured in one of Bradley’s favourite films – Deliverance, from 1972. As they cross the bridge to admire the falls in all their glory, Bradley spots some ferocious white-water rapids and immediately fears the worse. Bradley says: “No, No, No. I’m not going on no rapids…the last time I went canoeing I got hit on the nose with an oar by my wife.” With Barney’s persuasion, they head four miles down the road to South Carolina, to tackle a three-mile stretch of the Chattooga River by canoe, for some epic scenery and class four rapids. As they navigate the fast-moving water and vast drops, the canoe fills with water and Barney is thrilled: “Dad, this is a serious adventure!” With Bradley left in need of a whisky, they head to a Hillbilly Jam for a nightcap and to experience the mountain tradition of clog dancing. Performing at the event is five-time World Banjo Champion and octogenarian Raymond Fairchild with his band. Bradley embarrasses Barney by insisting he does a duet with Raymond on his ukulele. It’s a new day and the guys are back in the RV driving 60 miles into Tennessee for some fun in The Great Smoky Mountains and to meet some local lumberjacks for a spot of seemingly friendly competition. Bradley is delighted, claiming he has some past experience that is bound to work in his favour and proudly explaining: “When I was younger and trying to do stand-up comedy, I actually worked as a tree surgeon. I took down a big tree that landed in a hospital car park.” The first Walsh v Walsh event involves joining the professional lumberjacks for some axe throwing. Barney struggles with his technique and almost takes out a nearby window, but is then left truly speechless after witnessing his dad’s efforts… The second event is about teamwork and raw power by attempting some cross-cut sawing, which is a race to cut through a log with a partner using both ends of an enormous wood saw.

The Greek Islands With Julia Bradbury In the first episode, Julia visits the picturesque, rustic and rugged island of Crete, a favourite island with British holiday-goers, but Julia steps away from tourist trail and heads deep into the heart of the island to explore the Dikti mountains and its striking plateau of windmills. She meets goat shepherd Giannis, who shows her how he makes cheese using age-old traditional methods. Back on the coast in the town of Rethymno, Julia tries the delicacy baklava, meeting filo pastry expert Giorgos, who has been producing it for 75 years. She also meets master artisan Nico, who expertly makes the Cretan lyra, a stringed instrument said to be the ‘soundtrack to Crete’. Her journey ends with a visit to the stunning but poignant neighbouring island of Spinalonga - once an exiled leper colony.

The Greatest Dancer The dance talent show returns for another week, where BBC1, 19.00 dancers of any age and dance style compete to win £50,000 and a chance to perform on Strictly Come Dancing. Hoping to discover The Greatest Dancer are the superstar Dance Captains: Multi-platinumselling singer Cheryl, Broadway and Glee star Matthew Morrison and Strictly Come Dancing professional Oti Mabuse. They are now joined by a brand new Dance Captain - American pop star, dancer and choreographer to stars such as Beyonce and Taylor Swift, Todrick Hall. At the auditions the audience hold the power, and only they will decide if the mirror opens for the acts or not. The dancers need to impress at least 75% of the audience for the mirror to open and progress in the competition.

The River Corrupted Sid returns to Kembleford to ask his old family to help save his new one. After Maeve Lochlin’s (Bronte Terrell) father Pat (Ian Puleston-Davies) is accused of murdering Roger Barford (Andrew Whipp), Maeve and her boyfriend Sid Carter (Alex Price) travel to Kembleford to ask Father Brown (Mark Williams) to help them clear his name. Father Brown promises to do all he can and pays a visit to Blind ‘Arry’s (Alan Williams) where Pat is laying low. Things don’t look good for Pat when it is revealed that he and Roger had an argument about money on the night Roger was killed. Roger’s widow Georgina Barford (Hannah Yelland) is convinced that Pat is guilty, but Father Brown’s suspicions turn towards barmaid Polly Beavington (Gabrielle Creevy), who used to work for Roger at his textile factory. Were the two having an affair? And did Roger finish it? When Pat is arrested for murder, it’s down to Father Brown to prove his innocence before it’s too late.

Father Brown
When elderly teacher Peter Farquhar was found dead at home in the village of Maids Moreton in 2015, it was sad and unexpected, but no one thought it suspicious. But 18 months later, when his neighbour Ann Moore-Martin also fell ill and died, the police decided to look again. They found that Ben Field, a would-be vicar and academic, had recently become part of both of their lives and benefited from their wills.

Good Omens BBC2, 21.00

KittyCatz News
We are growing! KITTYCATZ is now in its second year, and has gone from strength to strength. There is certainly the need for an organisation, to help the most sick and vulnerable cats and kittens of Tenerife. During the first few months we had no money, and very little in the way of donations. This was hard for us, but, what we did have, was plenty of enthusiasm and years of experience, nursing cats and kittens. We try to help other charities as much as possible who don’t have the volunteers available, or have volunteers without the experience required. Our first sick kitten came from another charity, who asked us to help. She had a terrible eye infection, which needed months of care. Sadly, one of her eyes needed to be removed. At the same time, we received our first donation of kitten milk, and some fleece bedding. We cut up a small piece of the fleece blanket, to make her a little jacket to keep her warm, before her surgery. She was eventually adopted into a wonderful home, and is happy and healthy. Not all cases have a happy ending, however. If you are following us on Facebook, you may recall the story about Sara, who came to us before Christmas, from a holiday complex. She was found confused and bumping into walls, with a huge cyst on her face. It transpired that she was blind, and very poorly. The jelly cyst was removed, but she suffered some serious seizures at her foster home, and was, sadly, put to sleep.
What’s most important, though, is that she spent her final days being loved and fed, and receiving veterinary treatment. She was in a clean bed, and not crawling with fleas, and eating food from bins. Not all cases end well, but we do our best to help the cats and kittens most in need. You can support us by liking our Facebook page, following the news on our website, and attending our events. Donations of food, litter or money can also be made to Vet Express, behind Gran Sur. Every little helps. We would like to thank everyone who started the journey with us, and those who have joined us, along the way. We are very proud of how far we have come, with the support of old friends, and new. Now in our second year, we have plenty of news stories on our website, together with an online shop. Our Facebook page is growing, and we have had several very-successful fundraising events, with more planned for 2020. Follow us on Facebook, or our website www.kittycatz.net
Walk for Life
Walk for Life celebrates its fabulous fund-raiser MORE than 4,000 walkers supported Tenerife’s 15th annual Walk for Life last December, raising a mammoth €36,643,77. This magnificent total was supplemented by generous donations from various charities and companies. Delighted organiser Brigitte Gypen said: “It has been
a special year, it being the 15th edition, because we have entered into a partnership with Think Pink Europe, and because of the many wonderful charity events, organised by sponsors and collaborators. “But our motive is still the same as when it all started: full support to those who suffer, or have suffered, breast cancer, and their families.”
K9 Animal News JUST two days into the start of this year, this black beauty arrived. She had been found wandering around Granadilla, by a young girl, who kept her for a couple of nights to see if she could find the owner. She wasn’t successful. She brought her to K9 and we named her Pinky. She is a medium-large, mixed breed, and we think she is 2-3 years old. When she first arrived she was very scared, agitated and confused, which is understandable, and we all did our very best to make her feel secure and safe. Around the same time she was brought to K9, a male dog was left tied up outside the shelter. Those of you who come and walk the dogs will know Kaiser. He was very chilled in the kennels, so we decided to match the two of them up, and they worked well together. Kaiser seemed to calm her down a little bit. Pinky can be very tense
Meet Pinky!
and anxious in the kennels, and can bark at other dogs, particularly males. But, once outside, she is a very sweet, playful girl who loves human attention, and just wants a second chance at a loving, forever home. She does have a lot of energy, so would need a daily walk. There are moments when we catch her playing with Kaiser in the kennels, and it is very funny to watch, and it shows, when she is relaxed, just how fun and sweet she can be. She really enjoys being taken for walks, and our amazing
volunteers often take her and Kaiser to the beach, for a break away from the kennels. She is a little bit afraid of the water, so we are trying to build up her confidence with this, and we are hoping her new owners would be willing to continue to do so. She is heartworm positive, but this can be easily managed with medication. Can you help us find her a new loving forever home? We do not know how she ended up wandering around Granadilla, but she didn’t deserve to be left alone. Please help us, and let’s get Pinky out of the kennels so she can feel all the love in the world. You can visit any day between 9.30am-1.30pm. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. We look forward to seeing you! More abandoned animals FIRSTLY, we would like to wish all our friends and supporters a very happy New Year, and we look forward to working together with you, in 2020. Behind the scenes, during the festive season, our busy work has continued with many dogs still being abandoned, and arriving in horrendous conditions. Also, many of the dogs have recently had litters of puppies, of which we do not know their whereabouts. We can never stress enough the importance of sterilising your dog. Please adopt, and do not buy a puppy. Dougal and Caramelo
Our pony and donkey, Dougal and Caramelo, have also had a well-deserved Christmas holiday together, before they continue their job of helping to educate the children in animal welfare with our educational programme, which will commence in the New Year. Here’s why the car often breaks down
THE most common reason for a car breakdown, or its failure to start, is probably because of the battery. In the UK, we normally associate this with cold, damp weather. But, here, in Tenerife, the reverse is true. Extreme heat and the dry air mean that a battery can “give up” without any notice, and this is very common. Many people will happily travel to a shopping centre, as well as visiting or sightseeing. But on returning to their vehicle, 15 minutes, an hour, or several hours later, the car will not start. Panic sets in, and drivers cannot understand this, because there has been no indication of the battery’s deterioration. If you have a grua cover
29 CW
with your insurance, which the majority of policies do these days, you can call a grua, whose driver will come out and will, often, start the vehicle with the assistance of
jump leads, or a battery booster. This should enough to get you to the nearest garage of choice, to purchase and have a new one fitted, or to the nearest petrol
station, which often sells batteries, although they will be more expensive in these circumstances … needs must, as they say! You should then, immediately, go to the nearest garage,
or to a specific mechanic, and ask to have the battery tested. This involves a simple test, which they can perform to see what voltage the battery is showing. If the reading is not correct, then another new battery is normally necessary, with the appropriate voltage, and should be fitted . But, generally, the staff will help you select the correct one, although it is always best to go to the garage or mechanic you know and trust. It is also a good idea to carry a set of jump leads, which can be purchased from large, car-accessories stores. And if you are carrying a set of jump leads, you can often find a helpful motorist, who will assist you with a jump start. Of course, a battery is by no means the only reason a car does not start, but it is, by far, the most common. Many of the more modern cars have battery light-indicators, which warn you when the battery is low.

Soup yourself up with garlic GARLIC has a long and proud tradition as a medicine. The Ancient Egyptians recommended it for 22 ailments. In a papyrus dated 1500 BC, the labourers who built the pyramids ate it to increase their stamina, and keep them healthy.
The Ancient Greeks advocated garlic for everything from curing infections, and lung and blood disorders, to healing insect bites, and even treating leprosy. The Romans fed it to soldiers and sailors to improve their endurance. Dioscorides, the personal physician to Emperor Nero, wrote a five-volume treatise extolling its virtues. Garlic soup, based on more than 50 cloves of garlic, onions, thyme and lemon, will destroy almost any virus that enters its path, including colds and flu. Garlic is hailed for its powers to halt viruses in their tracks. It has gained its reputation as a virus buster, thanks to one of its chemical constituents, allicin. Garlic is 100 times more effective than two popular antibiotics at fighting disease-causing bacteria, commonly responsible for food-borne illness. When the garlic is crushed, alliin becomes allicin. Research shows that allicin helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and also helps prevents blood clots. Garlic can also reduce the risk of developing atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). It is also effective against digestive ailments and diarrhoea, and may help prevent the onset of cancers. Increasing your garlic intake can cut the duration of cold symptoms, from five-and-a-half days, to four-and-a-half. Garlic soup recipe Serves 4 26 garlic cloves (unpeeled) 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons (¼ stick) organic butter (grass fed) ½ teaspoon cayenne powder ½ cup fresh ginger 2¼ cups sliced onions 1½ teaspoons chopped fresh thyme 26 garlic cloves, peeled ½ cup coconut milk 3½ cups organic vegetable broth 4 lemon wedges Preheat oven to 350F. Place 26 garlic cloves in small glass baking dish. Add two tablespoons of olive oil, sprinkle with sea salt and toss to coat. Cover baking dish tightly with foil, and bake until garlic is golden brown and tender, about 45 minutes. Cool. Squeeze garlic between fingertips, to release cloves. Transfer cloves to small bowl. Melt butter in heavy large saucepan over mediumhigh heat. Add onions, thyme, ginger and cayenne powder, and cook until onions are translucent, about six minutes. Add roasted garlic and 26 raw garlic cloves, and cook for three minutes.
Add vegetable broth. Cover and simmer until garlic is very tender, about 20 minutes. Working in batches, puree soup in blender until smooth. Return soup to saucepan. Add coconut milk, and bring to simmer. Season with sea salt and pepper for flavour. Squeeze juice of a lemon wedge into each bowl and serve. Can be prepared one day ahead. Cover and
refrigerate. Rewarm over medium heat, stirring occasionally. After an hour-and-a-quarter’s industrious soup-making, sprinkle lemon juice over a bowl of steaming, grey gloop and tuck in. The heady aroma certainly revs up the appetite, and the first spoonful does not disappoint. Delicious as it is, however, one large bowl of home-made soup is a more than ample meal.

10th January - 16th January 2020
Van’s having a ball in Tenerife! IT is with great pleasure that we, at Keddy’s Entertainment, introduce our Mr. Van Elliot.
Van has enjoyed an extremely successful and varied career. Not only has he been a great and established entertainer and host, back in the UK, he has now been christened by us, at Keddy’s Entertainment, as the resident Tenerife entertainment oracle! He has worked on this beautiful island of Tenerife since the very early, tourist start-up days. He has worked on luxury cruise ships from the 70s, including the QE2, and Cunard lines Nordic Prince and Ocean Islander, to name but a few! His career achievements range from resident entertainer, night-club singer, and visiting celebrity artiste, to Cruise Director. Van absolutely adores performing. His energy and passion are boundless. He was head-hunted, in 2018, by “The Festival of Legends”, based in Malaga, and asked to host and sing on their dual-nationality cruises, for both Spanish and ex-pats, sailing from Spain. True to say, he probably didn’t need much persuasion, because entertaining and entertainment are part of his DNA! His account and description of the entertainment scene, 42 years ago, is fascinating, and we think you will agree. Van arrived in Tenerife in September 1978, at Los Rodeos airport. Neither the southern airport or motorway had yet opened. We complain about the TF1 now, but it took over four hours to reach his destination: Ten Bel, Costa del Silencio. Van explains that seeing Ten Bel now, “you just can´t imagine what a superb resort it was at that time”. He describes how beautiful, grass-lined avenues linked the architecturally-individual aparthotels, each housing different nationalities. They each boasted their own individual swimming pool, restaurant, show and pool bar, and extra facilities such as barbeque, steak house, Italian restaurant, private
sandy beach, massive sea pool, ten-pin bowling, disco, themed shooting range, tennis, volleyball, and the Ten Bel Train. Can you imagine this mini cosmopolitan entertainment city? It must have been phenomenal, and so welcomed for our evolving tourist industry, and it heralded the Tenerife tourist package-holiday boom! Van tells us that he was at Drago, the British section, where all the entertainment was presented in English. Gemini: This was the Belgian section, with the presentation in French and Flemish Maravilla: This was the German and Spanish entertainment delivery Frontera and Primavera: The Dutch entertainment
delivery. Van tells us that he was employed and working for Pontinental, the international section of Pontins, the popular holiday company. “We had professional entertainers”, he explained. “Keyboards, drums, singers, magicians, dancers etc., along with our resident entertainment team, supplemented with a visiting show, flown in from the UK, every two weeks, and a Canarian Folklore Trio, alternating fortnightly with a Flamenco Show.” The early 80s saw a huge increase in the number of tourists and holidaymakers, visiting the south of Tenerife. Gradually, it began to alter the face of our entertainment industry, expanding and developing into the
entertainment industry that we have today. The “Cavern” was opened in Veronicas, with a fabulous Beatles tribute band, paving the way for the many tribute acts that we all know and love. Keddy’s Entertainment’s focused customer research shows us that they are still so popular today. Danny from the Crow’s Nest Disco Bar opened the legendary Bobby’s Disco, named after his lovely wife from New Zealand. Van adds that “not a lot of people know that”. jAt the time, the only excursion-style dinner show and night out was in Puerto de la Cruz, at La Cueva “The Hawaiin Show”, owned by a young, enterprising guy called Raoul, who now owns San Miguel Castle, and many other successful ventures. This entertainment recipe was hugely successful, and, not long afterwards, another dinner show was performing. Tenbel produced their dinner show, venue La Ballena, with the Noche Latino. Maitre D, Jose, still lives here and owns the supermarket “Joseito” in Las Galletas. The producer was Denis Peersman, who brought in a brilliant choreographer, Aida de Quick from Belgium, and, along with the her Vegas-style dancers, developed a great show. This was a wonderful, heady combination of singing, Flamenco, magic and illusion. This formula has always attracted guests. However, like everything in life, it has
to evolve and adapt to be fresh, and to meet presentday, tourist, international expectations. Tenerife dinner shows are developing into fresh new concepts, and exciting, redcarpet events. Spectacular cabaret delights titillate the taste buds and senses. Set in luxurious venues, they are becoming first-class, international dinner shows. A 5*-plus holiday experience, and unique holiday memory, within a holiday. A night out to be truly remembered, and enjoyed and experienced by everyone. Wherever you happen to be holidaying, in whatever type of accommodation, at affordable prices, Van says it is great to see the changes, over the years. Van has entertainment in his genes. We at Keddy’s Entertainment are pleased to be amalgamated with him. Adam Keddy, our director, has a wealth of experience in branding and marketing, within the entertainment scene, both here and in the UK. He has directed, produced and marketed several shows and events. Keddy’s Entertainment is continually developing new initiatives and marketing strategies, to improve and enhance the customer experience, creating fresh entertainment offerings that will attract even more tourists from all over the world. Tenerife’s New Year win is much needed
CD Tenerife
THE Blanquiazul took a huge step forward last Saturday, thoroughly deserving this win against Albacete.
Goals from Jorge, Suso, Dani Gómez and Álex Muñoz achieved their first victory under new coach Rubén Baraja, moving them away from the relegation places. Baraja raised a few eyebrows by sticking with Jorge Padilla and Elliot, two youth players who have broken into the first team. But despite having numerous casualties in his squad, especially in attack, his boldness deserved recognition… and his reward was not long in coming! After a good start, a serious-looking Tenerife took advantage in the 10th minute, thanks to the persistence of Dani Gómez and Jorge. The move began with a long shot from Elliot, which was saved by Albacete goalkeeper Tomeu. But Dani Gómez collected the rebound and passed the ball inside to Jorge, who tapped it into an open net from a few yards out, scoring his first goal in the blue-and-white first-team shirt. But it didn’t stop there. Tenerife had seven shots, three on target, and five corners, all in the first 15 minutes. After this onslaught, the team calmed down, but they continued to play some solid, confident football. Jorge had a chance to double their lead, but was thwarted by a good save from Tomeu, who deflected the ball for a corner. But they did score again, just before half-time. Dani Gomez played a perfectly-weighted ball into space through the middle, and Suso timed his run perfectly to stay onside. And, with just the keeper to beat, his shot from 18 yards went straight past Tomeu and into the net, in the 45th minute. The captain’s strike was just what Tenerife needed as they headed for the changing rooms at half-time with a spring in their step, and an excellent lead. The second half couldn’t have started better for Tenerife, who were dominating a flustered

Albacete, who didn’t know what had hit them. Suso picked up a loose ball on the right, raced down the wing and saw Dani Gomez heading to the far post. Scorer became provider, and he played the perfect cross between goalkeeper and defenders right into Dani’s path, who volleyed it,

left-footed, into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 after 53 minutes. At this point, the CDT faithful were ecstatic, but Albacete responded immediately with a shot by Dani Ojeda, which hit the post defended by keeper Dani Hernández, who was in for Ortolá. But this was a warning because the Manchego team cut the lead in the 68th minute after a corner found Rey Manaj, alone and unmarked in front of goal. He headed the ball home to make it 3-1, but the Tenerife defence really should have done better. In fact, alarm bells were ringing just three minutes later at the Heliodoro when Albacete scored their second goal, and again the defence was below par. Dani Ojeda was picked out in front of goal and he tapped in from three yards to make it 3-2, silencing the crowd as the visitors finally got into the game, threatening to draw a match in which Tenerife had controlled throughout. But Baraja reacted immediately, making consecutive changes. First, he took off Jorge Padilla and put on Undabarrena, and changed the formation to 4-1-4-1, abandoning the classic 4-4-2 line-up he had been using. Then Moore entered the game, replacing idolised captain Suso on the far right. The changes rebalanced the play but promised a tense 20 minutes until the end, although Álex Muñoz had different ideas! As Tenerife broke through the centre, he picked up the ball and shot from 25 yards out, straight past a sprawling Tomeu, who could do nothing about it, giving Tenerife a 4-2 advantage after 82 minutes. The home side even had one more shot before the end, and kept Albacete at bay for a muchdeserved win and a valuable three points, lifting them to 18th in the league on goal-difference. There are three teams on 22 points and two above on 23, so it’s still very tight at the bottom. But Tenerife’s first win under Baraja, after the Christmas break, will fill them with confidence, as they head to Rayo Majadahonda tomorrow (Saturday) for their second-round Copa Del Rey clash. Their next league match is against Huesca on Wednesday, so let’s hope this performance is a sign of things to come, as they rebuild for 2020.

THE league resumes this evening (Friday), but, meanwhile, a couple of catch-up games were played over the Christmas break. Emerald Lounge were hosts to Marilyns in Division 2, and a good, close match ensued. The visitors needed the trebles game for a draw, but their opponents denied them, securing a 5-3 win. In Division 1, Emerald B travelled to Pas’O’Nadas A, and the match wasn’t quite as close. In fact, it was nowhere near as close! Ken knocked in a 180 for the visitors, but that simply delayed the inevitable, and, a little like David v Goliath, but with David’s hands tied behind his back, it was an 8-0 slaughter to Pas’O’Nadas. PLAYERS from several rugby clubs across the Canary Islands came together last weekend, to take part in a specialist coaching session at Adeje’s Nandu club. The under-18s, from clubs including The Boatmen, Gran Canaria’s Las Palmas and Nandu, spent six hours focusing on their skills, techniques and understanding of the game, before playing a fullsided, full-contact match.
These sessions were led by some of Nandu’s coaches, including an International Rugby Board (World Rugby) Level 3 coach, a qualified referee and a former professional player with Sale Sharks. The aim was not only to build the players’ confidence and skill-set, but also to develop the teamsmanship of young people from different clubs and various islands, who often go hammer and tongs against each other in league matches! The event was a huge success, with an excellent attitude shown
and a work-rate to match, in all five different sessions delivered. These clinics will continue monthly, with February’s gathering also aiming to select a representative “Canarian BaaBaas” squad to play the Isle of Man U18 team, who will visit Tenerife the following month. With discussions taking place about up-coming tournaments on the mainland, future touring teams coming to challenge, and even a potential UK tour, this really is an exciting time to be playing rugby in the Canary Islands.

Barcelona slip to third after nail-biting defeat THIS week marked the start of Euroleague’s second round, in Europe’s top-tier competition.
The final game of the first round featured an all-Spanish clash, as Baskonia and Barcelona went head to head, the Basques just managing to hold on and defeat the Catalans 76-74 in what was a real nail-biter. It was a much-needed win for Baskonia, who now have a record of seven wins and 10 defeats, which leaves them 12th in the league, and four places outside the play-offs. This defeat meant that Barcelona, slipped to third place in the standings, allowing archrivals Real Madrid to move just ahead of them into second spot. Madrid beat French champions ASVEL Villeurbanne 87-77 and moved to a 14-3 record, which was one win ahead of Barcelona. The fourth and final Spanish team in the Euroleague this season is
Valencia, who beat Germany’s Alba Berlin 91-77. The win took Valencia to 10th place, having won eight and lost nine games, which leaves them lying just outside the playoffs, because of head-to-head results. While the two El Clasico rivals
seem to be cruising through to the play-offs, the other two Spanish teams have their work cut out. They need to come up with some big wins in the second round to ensure that all four Spanish teams make the play-offs, for the first time since the 2010-11 season.
