Continued from Front “As you know, the UK will be leaving the EU on 31st January, and we are on course to leave with a Deal,” he said. “But I want to explain some of the jargon around the parliamentary process, and, crucially, what all this means for British nationals living in Spain. “Citizens’ rights have always been an important part of the negotiations on our exit from the EU. Indeed, the citizens’ rights parts of the Withdrawal Agreement (the agreement about how we leave the EU) were one of the first areas to be agreed between the UK and the EU, in autumn 2018. “The final text of the Withdrawal Agreement was agreed between the UK and the EU in October 2019, and there were no substantial changes to the citizens’ rights elements. “In the UK, the process for approving the Withdrawal Agreement, or what many of us call “the Deal”, is already well underway in Parliament. “The House of Commons approved the Withdrawal Agreement Bill on Thursday, 9th January. This was the domestic legislation, passed by Parliament with a 99 majority on Thursday, 9th January. “It is now being discussed in the House of Lords, and, should there be any amendments as a result of this, they will be considered by the House of Commons. The Bill will then be given “Royal Assent”, which means that it becomes law in the UK. “To follow this in depth, see the UK Parliament website https://services.parliament.

Why this big Deal is important to us

uk/Bills/2019-20/european unionwithdrawalagreement. html). “In parallel, the European Parliament will also vote on the Withdrawal Agreement, on 29th January. Approval by a simple majority would mean that the EP has also ratified ‘the Deal’. “These processes are a bit intricate, but the key point for you is that we are firmly on track to leave with a Deal on 31st January.” The Ambassador added: “It is also important to note that your rights under the Withdrawal Agreement are completely independent of the negotiations about our future trade and security relationship with the EU. “For British Nationals in Spain, the Withdrawal Agreement

contains really important guarantees for you, on citizens’ rights, such as the right to continue to live and work in Spain, and the continuation of healthcare and uprating of pensions. “Those rights will be protected for as long as you remain resident in Spain, but do ensure that you are registered as a resident by 31st December this year. “That’s why it is so important to ensure that you, your family, your friends, and, indeed, your neighbours, are all correctly registered as residents here. “If you are not sure whether you are, or don’t know what to do next, have a look at this video from our consular advisor, which takes you through the process, and

explains the differences between the padron, NIE and residencia: https://www. facebook.com/BritsInSpain/ videos/2503168039961576/ “You have time, and there are plenty of appointments in most provinces. But do make it a New Year’s Resolution to get it done as soon as you can! “I should also clarify that UK Nationals cannot apply for a TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, or a foreigner’s identity card) until after Brexit, and I know some people have been asking about it. “If there is any change to the residency system after Brexit, we will update our Living in Guide at gov.uk/ livinginspain, so do sign up for alerts and follow us on Facebook at facebook. com/britsinspain. “We are also holding outreach events in a number of locations throughout January, and further details of all our outreach events are on the Living in Guide, and on Facebook, so do come along if you have any questions or doubts, and also encourage others to join us. “If you can’t attend a faceto-face event, we will be staging another Facebook live session on 31st January, in which we can also answer your questions directly. “My very best wishes for 2020.”

The UK Government’s welcome lift for Flybe

BRITISH airline Flybe has been saved from going bust, thanks a cash deal reached with its investors and the UK Government.

The carrier’s shareholders, which include the Stobart Group and Virgin Atlantic, have agreed to pump more money into the company. And the Government has agreed that it will review Flybe’s payment of airpassenger duty, which the airline had hoped to defer. Flybe, which runs flights to Tenerife South, as well as several Spanish cities, can continue operating, according to the Govern-

ment’s Business Secretary, Andrea Leadsom. She said: “Delighted that we have reached agreement with Flybe’s shareholders to keep the company operating, ensuring that UK regions remain connected.

“This will be welcome news for Flybe’s staff, customers and creditors, and we will continue the hard work to ensure a sustainable future.” Flybe is owned by Connect Airways, and chairman

Lucien Farrell said: “We are very encouraged with recent developments, especially the Government’s recognition of the importance of Flybe to communities and businesses across the UK, and the desire to strengthen regional connectivity.” It comes after the airline nearly collapsed into liquidation in 2019, before it was bailed out by a consortium, including Virgin, which bought it for €3.3m. The Government’s pledge to review the taxes paid on flights caused anger among climate-change activists. Flybe’s Spanish destinations include Tenerife South, Madrid, Palma, Alicante and Malaga.

Pregnant mum’s baby dies on a migrant boat

A BABY died after being born on a small boat, carrying 43 migrants to Spain, after the maritime rescue services discovered it. The boat was actually found 15 miles from Arrecife in Lanzarote, after washing up on the popular Tarifa beach in Cadiz. Rescuers attempted to resuscitate the baby boy, but to no avail. The newborn’s mother was transferred to the Molina Orosa Hospital by helicopter, once the boat had docked, and on board was also another pregnant woman, carrying twins. The boat had been drifting since 5th January, until it ran out of fuel, and the Red Cross reported that the majority of those rescued were from Ghana, in West Africa. The crossing from there to the Canary Islands is the longest, and also the most dangerous. Migrants hoping to make the crossing tend to choose it because it isn’t as well policed as the north of Morocco, and it is more accessible for people of other West African countries. According to the International Organisation for Migration, 602 people have died trying to make this journey. Arrivals to the Canary Islands have doubled in recent times, which troubles the Spanish authorities because of the archipelago’s inability to handle more immigrants.

Bar punch-up sparks anger from residents

RESIDENTS in Los Abrigos are complaining that the area is now being compared with parts of Las Americas, after two men were seen brawling outside a popular bar on Sunday. They were spotted by a local man from his apartment. He was so upset that he uploaded a post on social media, saying: “Las Americas seems too small, so they now come here, causing accidents as well as fighting. What type of example is this to our youth?” The footage shows a fight breaking out in the middle of the day in front of the newlyrefurbished bar, which sits on the side of the main road leading into the town from Las Chafiras. One of the men decided to walk away, but the opponent followed him to his car, trying to provoke him into continuing the dust-up. Local residents, who are now raising awareness, are believed to have reported the unsavoury incident to Granadilla Council, saying it was not an isolated incident, but is happening regularly.

Nabbed: UK killer who lived in Adeje NATIONAL Police officers in Adeje have arrested a fugitive, 39-year-old John Kennedy, accused of murdering two policemen, who was listed on a European Arrest Warrant, filed by the UK’s National Crime Agency. He was arrested as he left a supermarket, and was sighted for other crimes, such as belonging to a criminal organisation, injuring other people, and his possible involvement in six other homicides, which are being investigated. The probe into his escape began several months ago,

ARONA Council is offering cancer patients free transport to the metropolitan area, as well as physiotherapeutic and aesthetic support. Social Services Councillor Elena Cabello signed agreements with the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) and with the Association of Women with Breast Cancer of Tenerife (Ámate). There will now be free transport for patients and family members to hospitals in the metropolitan area, such as water rehabilitation programmes and comprehensive, psychological, aesthetic and physio-therapeutic support. Arona Council has renewed the three specific programmes it maintains, currently, for cancer patients and their families, which it carries out in collaboration with both Ámate and the AECC. It adds to the close cooperation with other organisations, such as the Career for Life Foundation, with which it contributes to fund-raising for research and other projects, which improve the quality of life for cancer sufferers. when the National Crime Agency alerted the National Police about his possible whereabouts in Spain. After a long, complicated, joint-investigation with UK authorities, Kennedy was found in Adeje, where he was living, and trying to go unnoticed by leading a completely normal life. The arrest was carried out during a surveillance, which the National Police established in the immediate vicinity of the apartment complex where he lived. The officers found an individual, whose physical characteristics coincided with those of the wanted person, as he was going to a nearby supermarket. Upon leaving the premises, his identity was confirmed and he was arrested.

“Kennedy appeared in Glasgow Sheriff Court on 12th December, and a report was submitted to the Procurator Fiscal,” said a Police Scotland spokesperson. The reasons Kennedy was wanted go back to 2006, when he broke into a Glasgow police station and unloaded his firearm against Jamie Campbell, killing him. Ten years later, in 2016, together with several accomplices, he turned the gun on another British policeman, Kenny Reilly, also taking his life. To avoid his arrest for these events, he set two vehicles on fire and managed to flee in 2018. All these charges, levelled by English justice, were made worse because he was part of a criminal gang, and, in addition, had

possible involvement in six other homicides, which are being investigated. The operation remains open, and the arrest of three other members of the same criminal gang in the UK, Darren Eadie, 28, his 53-year-

old father Morton Eadie and Ross Fisher, 28, are also accused of murdering Reilly. They are believed to have gunned him down in his car, while Campbell is also thought to have been killed in a vehicle.

Arona’s extra support for its cancer patients, with free family cover

programme that allows Arona to offer cancer patients free transportation, from the Los Cristianos headquarters of the AECC, to hospitals in the metropolitan area, where they receive treatment. It is a fundamental issue for themselves and their families, in the southern region’s

public and comprehensive medical service for them. The agreement also contemplates the maintenance of apartments and shelters for those forced to move, in addition to providing family members with a break in the accompaniment tasks. “Mucho por vivir” is a swimming programme in

the Los Cristianos municipal swimming pool, which is for cancer patients who have undergone the removal of a lymph node, and have received radiotherapy. The aim is to improve their quality of life, and improve the affected limb’s mobility. Arona Mayor José Julián Mena stressed the impor-

tance of “supporting 365 days a year for cancer patients, with physiotherapeutic, psychological or aesthetic services, in addition to facilitating transport to hospitals in the metropolitan area.” He added: “We always claim the need for these treatments to be offered, once and for all, in the southern region, as we have been demanding for many years.” Social Services Councillor Elena Cabello said: “Arona tries to provide comprehensive and real support to cancer patients, providing different services to them and their families, to improve their quality of life, and, also, in the case of transport and treatments. Having to travel regularly to hospitals when suffering from cancer, with the mobility difficulties we have on motorways, can become a very important problem.”

Hotel’s hard-up staff forced to go on strike

Town Hall approves two five-star hotels TWO luxury Gran Canaria hotels have been approved by San Bartolomé de Tirajana’s local Town Hall, in Maspolomas, Las Palmas.

The Miramar Hotel in Puerto de la Cruz

EMPLOYEES at the Miramar Hotel in Puerto de la Cruz have been on strike since last Wednesday (8th January), protesting at the repeated nonpayment of salaries. And on other occasions, they say, there have been delays in paying salaries by the Hotel Elegance Miramar company. The workforce have not received their salaries for November and December

2019. And, stress workers, the company’s management has shown an “insensitive and petty attitude” towards the staff’s situation, depriving them of wages at a time when money was particularly necessary for Christmas and Three Kings Day. The Public Employees Union, Intersindical Canaria (IC), points out that the workforce have been receiving their pay late for a long time, which has forced them to strike. And, it suggests, they will maintain this action until the company fulfils its obligations.

The hotels will be situated in Pasito Blanco, and the promoter, Centro Helioterápico de Gran Canaria SA, plans to invest €120m in the hotels, of which €3,838,863 will end up in council coffers in construction taxes and other municipal taxes. The new sites, in total, will feature 1,454, high-level accommodation places, and this will be the first major construction licence granted there since 2009 by the Department for Urban Planning. “This ends 10 years of absolute paralysis in the construction of new hotels,” said Urban Planning and Tourism Councillor, Alejandro Marichal. He added: “This is a firm commitment to the requalification of our accommodation offer, to increase the arrival

of tourists with greater purchasing power.” The hotels will be built for the SeaSide Hotels company, in the urbanisation known as “Sector 5A Pasito Blanco”. A five-star hotel will boast an area of 66,00 sq/m, with up to three floors, featuring 550 accommodation units, holding a total of 104 beds. The other hotel, a five-star ‘luxury’ hotel, will have a total area of nearly

46,000sq/m, with a maximum of four stories, incorporating 161 accommodation units, containing 350 beds. The 711 high-standard units are aimed at enhancing the appeal of the famous Costa Maspalomas, in one of the most important tourist municipalities, competing at European level. The works granted must begin inside four years, from the notification of the licence grant.

Ryanair cuts over 200 jobs, NEWS IN BRIEF amid its Canarian closures La Orotava Festival for Saints VARIOUS festivals, beginning today (Friday), will be staged at Barrio de La Florida, in La Orotava, to honour Saint Antonio Abad and Our Lady of La Esperanza. This huge jamboree will continue until Sunday, 26th January, and among the events is the preparation of a giant stew the previous morning, followed by the tasting. It also features its Grand Pilgrimage, from 2pm on the final day, starting from la Glorieta de Los Pinos, with folk singers and all the pilgrims. Every year, thousands of people come to La Florida to enjoy this pilgrimage, in which all the neighbours participate. And, to make the party go with a swing, most of them wear traditional costume.

Bus crashes at airport

A TOURIST bus, which ran out of control at Tenerife South Airport after its driver had passed out, damaged bollards and other vehicles, resulting in minor injuries. Witnesses said the bus driver couldn’t be seen behind the wheel, and, while it was running freely, it damaged seven protection bollards from the pedestrian zone outside the terminal. A woman, who was struck by one of the bollards, suffered minor injuries. The driver and the woman were taken to hospital for a check-up.

Arona probes ‘illegal’ buildings

FOLLOWING complaints from the neighbours, Arona Council is investigating “illegal” buildings. Officials are checking to see whether the work being carried out on the Magaly shopping centre roof, in Los Cristianos, has the required permit. The inspection will also be extended to two other shopping centres in the same area, where work is underway.

Guardia officer in death crash

SANTA Cruz Court this week held the trial of a Guardia Civil officer, accused of reckless homicide, following a traffic accident in April 2016. He joined the road at Las Galletas by a roundabout with poor visibility, and skipped the STOP signal, just as a vehicle travelling at 85kph in a 50kph limit, hit the police car. The brutal impact caused the death of its driver, who was not wearing a seat belt. But the Prosecutor’s Office, which considered that the Guardia officer had committed a crime of reckless homicide, is asking for one year in prison, and a two-year driving ban.

IRISH budget airline Ryanair cut more than 200 jobs in Spain by closing three bases in the Canary Islands. The number of job losses is well below the 512 posts that unions had feared would be lost, however. “There were over 200 dismissals in the Canaries; just pilots and cabin crew; no other staff,” Ryanair’s Human Resource Director, Darrell Hugues, told a Madrid news conference. The airline said in August that it would close bases in Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, as well as one in Girona, in mainland Spain, leading Spanish union USO to predict that 512 jobs could be lost. But in the end, Ryanair kept the Girona base open. The company justified the need to reduce its presence on the ground by delays in the delivery of the grounded Boeing 737 MAX8, which, it says has left it with more pilots and crew than necessary. “We don’t have enough airplanes,

A BLAZE on the roof of a terminal at Alicante airport on Wednesday caused thousands of passengers to be evacuated, and incoming flights diverted or cancelled. But firefighters battled all night to stem the blaze, which covered some 1,200sqm, and the airport was reopened to air traffic yesterday (Thursday) at 2pm, as promised by a spokesman for Spanish airport operator AENA. “For a while, no one was allowed in or out.” Ten flights scheduled to land were cancelled, as were 12 more, supposed to depart from the airport, while another four planes that should have landed, were diverted to other Spanish airports. The flames were visible from inside the terminal, according to an AFP photographer at the scene, and passengers and workers, who had been evacuated, formed long lines outside as dense smoke rose from the terminal building.

so we’re closing bases,” said Hugues. Following the three Canary Islands sites closed last week, Ryanair moved some pilots and cabin crew, who were based there, to somewhere else in Europe, he added, without further details. Hugues also said the company did not close its base in Girona because employees there signed new contracts, making them seasonal workers and confirming information given by the USOC union last month. Under their new contract, employees are contracted to work nine months of the year instead of 12, which means their annual salaries will be re-

duced by around 25%, say the union. Around 100 employees at the Girona base accepted the new conditions, while those who refused were fired. Ryanair expects to get up to 10 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in March-April, revealed the airline’s marketing director, Kenny Jacobs. But he added: “It has no plans at the moment to reopen the Canary Island bases once that happens. Last Friday, Ryanair raised its annual profit forecast for its current financial year, ending in March, citing strong bookings and a better-than-expected Christmas/New Year travel period.

Airport blaze leaves thousands stranded

AEANA recommended in a tweet that new travellers should contact their airline before heading to Alicante airport, to see what the status of their flight was. “We are co-ordinating with airlines,” it said. “Consult your company to know if your flight is cancelled, or will operate from an alternative airport.” But outbound flights resumed yesterday afternoon, although there were likely to be delays. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries and it was unclear what caused the blaze. But the Valencian Community’s 112 emergency services issued a statement saying that slowburning insulation had caught fire, hampering the fire-fighters’ efforts to extinguish the blaze. “We recommend passengers

do not come to the airport until their flight has been confirmed,” a statement read. Spain’s air navigation manager, ENAIRE, said Alicante would be closed to incoming flights until at least 8.30 last night. Yet Peter Mcparlin, who witnessed the huge upheaval, claimed airport authorities told him it would remain closed “until 10pm tonight.” “I have nowhere else to go as I was due to fly to Leeds today,” said Mr Mcparlin yesterday. “It’s chaos here, and there are thousands of people outside not knowing what to do.” A Ryanair spokesperson said passengers were being taken by coach to Murcia airport, adding: “We are doing all we can to make sure our customers get home safely.”

Vueling among safest budget airlines of all! THE 10 safest budget airlines for 2020 have been named, with Catalunya-based Vueling among them. Each year, Airline Ratings gives the top 20 mostsecure carriers worldwide. And this year, it has included a separate section for the best 10, low-cost flight companies, in terms of safety. Australian national airline Qantas takes the top spot again, having been leader in practically every major developments and advances in operational safety in the last 60 years. It is followed by Air New Zealand, EVA Air (Taiwan), Etihad, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Emirates, Alaska Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Virgin Australia, Hawaiian Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic Airlines. European carriers making the top 20 are TAP Portugal, SAS, Swiss, Finnair, Lufthansa, Aer Lingus and KLM, in that order, although Royal Jordanian slots between SAS and Swiss. The vast majority of the safest airlines are extra-large, intercontinental carriers, which have a sizeable budget, enabling them to be on the cutting edge of safety, innovation and launching of new aircraft, according to Geoffrey Thomas, chief editor of Airline Ratings. New aircraft mentioned include the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787. Those which did not make

the cut, namely major national carriers such as Air France, Alitalia, British Airways, Turkish Airlines and Iberia, are not necessarily “unsafe”. It’s just that they are not at the peak of the industry in this respect. European Union air-travel laws are extremely strict, and no carrier falling short of its extremely-demanding safety standards is allowed into the continent’s air space. The Vueling company, owned by the IAG group, which also owns Iberia and British Airways, joins other European low-cost carriers Flybe and Wizz Air, both of which are regulars in most of Spain’s main airports. They offer connections several times a week between Spanish hubs and the rest of the continent. JetBlue, IndiGo, Air Arabia, Frontier, HK Express, Volaris, and WestJet make up the remainder of the list. According to Airline Ratings, the list of the “world’s safest for 2020” has come at a key moment in modern, air-travel history, just as inquiries into the Boeing 737 MAX 8 crash, which killed 157 people, are underway. “All airlines have incidents every day,” assures Airline Ratings. “But many of these are issues relating to aircraft or engine manufacturing, and not to the operations of the actual companies.”

Young bridge-jumper is saved by off-duty police

TWO off-duty National Police officers were able to help a young man in distress on Saturday afternoon in Santa Cruz, because they happened to be in the vicinity at the right time. The men noticed a crowd of individuals, gathered together at the Puente Galceran bridge, in the centre of Tenerife capital Santa Cruz, observing

a youngster sitting dangerously on the ledge of the bridge. It was obvious to the officers, as well as the crowd, that he was contemplating a jump, so they walked, discreetly, through the crowd and identified themselves. They also asked for the crowd’s collaboration, before placing themselves in an accessible area to help the man. The pair then proceeded to request assistance from the emergency services, before attempting to speak with the troubled youngster,

trying to convince him to get back on to the bridge pathway. Then, as they were trying to persuade him, they took him by surprise, and pulled him on to the path, with the help of another person, who also happened to be a policeman, stationed with the local division, The emergency ambulance arrived, and, once the man was in a safe place, he was taken to the medical team for an assessment, and then on to hospital for observation, as well as medical treatment.

Medals galore as Canaries dazzle in judo tournament

THE Canary Islands, competing in the “cadet” and “infant” categories, won 31 medals in the Spanish Judo Cup event, hosted by Granadilla de Abona, and attracting more than 800 competitors. The Canaries gained eight gold medals, nine silvers and 14 bronzes in the 10th year of the tournament, organised in collaboration with the Higher Sports Council, the National and Canarian judo federations, the Granadilla sports department and its Judo Club, among others. The Canary Islands excelled in the infant category,

with the best results of all, winning 11 medals, while Galicia’s cadets came away with 16 medals. The event attracted participants from Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic and Canary Islands, Catalonia, Castilla León, Castilla La Mancha, Cantabria, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid, Murcia, Navarra, Portugal, Rioja, Valencia and the Basque Country. Marcos González Alonso, the first Lieutenant Mayor and Councillor for Sports, along with Works Councillor María Concepción Cabrera and other members of the municipal corporation, attended the medal presentation ceremony. Marcos González congratulated all the participants and host club “Judo Grana-

dilla”, in addition to thanking the national and Canarian judo federations for backing Granadilla to host the event. Judo Granadilla has a history of over 37 years and many triumphs, in addition to the great success in each year of the organisation of this championship. As for the Granadilla’s results, a bronze was won by Ainhoa Salazar Ramos, a female cadet of less than 63 kilos, and two fifth places went to Alejandro Chávez Mendoza, a male cadet of less than 73 kilos, and Diego Pérez Moldovan, the under-38kg male infant. This test was a scoring event for the Spanish Championship, and participation in international championships, through the national team.

Dare-devil girl’s father could be for high jump GUARDIA Civil officers are working on a report to clarify the circumstances of the four-year-old girl, who walked along a 25-metre-high ledge, on the fourth floor of a Playa Paraíso apartment block, in the Costa Adeje area.

A video of the youngster’s breath-taking feat, just over a week ago, has travelled around the world, via television and social networks. Once the report has been completed, it will be presented to Arona’s investigating judge, and the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office, which is the normal protocol, following the potentially-dangerous situation. Manuel Campos Davó, Deputy Prosecutor of Minors of Santa Cruz, told the press that the youngster’s father, and his partner, could be charged with the crime of abandonment, but if the dramatic incident is shown to be “a great mistake”, the case will probably be filed. However, should anything other than carelessness be noticed, the Child Prosecutor would open a risk file, detailing a family follow-up through Social Services. In the video, which lasts just 20 seconds, the little girl is seen walking barefoot, on the afternoon of 4th January, on a ledge stretching along six metres, between two fourth-floor balconies. The girl appears to climb out of a window from the family apartment and walk to the terrace. But, unable to jump over the railing, she turns around and retraces her steps along the ledge, measuring some 1.5 metres wide. At one point, she skips, slightly, by the window, but never appears to be in danger. The eye-opening scene was recorded by a British tourist from a window opposite. Adeje’s Local Police have already delivered their report to the Arona courts, after hearing the Slovakian father’s version of events, and those of his Finnish partner, who live in the block. Officers also gathered opinions from several members of the apartment block’s community of owners.

Guardia officers pounce on empty-home robbers

TWO men, responsible for a dozen robberies at empty holiday homes near Cartagena, have been arrested by the Guardia Civil, after being trailed since 2018. Officers have been keeping an eye on the pair, aged 23 and 45, since a number of similar robberies began in Los Nietos. The suspects ensured that all properties were out of sight from the general public, picking homes they knew to be empty, and breaking in via upstairs terraces or balconies. Police officers focused on the local area because the crimes were all committed in close proximity of each other.

Lengthy Tenerife stop for windy Newcastle tourists

EASYJET passengers holidaying in Tenerife from the North East, should have boarded their flight home last Saturday evening, and arrived at Newcastle International Airport at 1.05am on Sunday. But delays, caused by Newcastle’s persistent wind throughout last Saturday, led to the flight crew reached their legal, maximum working hours. Instead, staff arranged hotel rooms for passengers overnight. A rearranged flight was scheduled to take off from Tenerife at 3pm on Sunday, arriving in Newcastle at 7.45pm, which was almost

19 hours later than planned. A spokesperson for EasyJet said: “We’re sorry for the delay to their flight. The plane was delayed on an earlier flight because of poor weather in Newcastle. “There are strict, industrywide rules governing the number of hours crew are allowed to work. And, to protect the safety of our customers and crew, these cannot be exceeded. “The disruption is beyond our control and is considered an extraordinary circumstance.” Two flights from Spain were diverted from Newcastle International Airport on Saturday, because of the extreme weather conditions. And an EasyJet plane from Malaga, which should have landed at 1.45pm, had to divert to Edinburgh.”

A man in a million! LAST year, Live PAWS Animal Welfare supporters were extremely lucky to have one of the most popular artists on the island, asking if he could be a fundraiser for them.

His name is Leslie ‘Elvis’ Moore, and he set himself the steep target of raising €10,000. Little did anyone know how determined and dedicated he was, and he quickly surpassed that amount. By the end of 2019, he had raised the unbelievable total of €27,000. Leslie appears at many venues, and he asked them if he could collect donations and spare change at the end of his shows, most of the time singing an extra set for free, to boost donations. His girl friend Joy Barrett, and good friends Angela Ward, Trish Owen and Kathy Mitchell, helped him all year. The White Knights, Phil Francis Kitto and Phil O’Neil often invited Leslie to join them during their shows, to raise awareness and donations, so special thanks must go to them. Of course, our sincere thanks

go to all the residents and visitors to this amazing island, who have dug deep, continually encouraging Leslie, and donating their hard-earned money to his cause. The venues, bars and restaurants, throughout the island, have given Leslie amazing support in his mammoth task, not least Princess Di’s in The Patch. Owners Joe and Dean Bull, who were already avid animal-welfare supporters, actively encouraged Leslie in his charity work, throughout last year, and continue to do so, this year. The animals of Tenerife domestic pets, agricultural animals and wildlife - have all been helped because of Leslie’s act of amazing

generosity. Many would not have survived. Over €12,000 euros have been allocated and spent on animals that were not directly under the care of Live PAWS; the pets of people who have found themselves homeless, or struggling financially, other animalwelfare charities, and the feral cat populations have all benefited. Four people died after a huge explosion at plant A wheely decent surprise by kindly Police officers A GROUP of kindhearted policemen have bought a man a new bike, after hitting him with their patrol car. Delivery man Francisco Javier was on his way to work, late at night, when he was struck by the police vehicle. The officers were responding to an emergency in Malaga and had decided to run a red light, because it appeared that no one was cutting across the junction. But at that very moment, Blanco appeared and was sent flying off his bicycle, a few metres down the road. The policemen called an ambulance, which took Blanco to the Hospital Regional de Malaga, where he received three

stitches above his right eyebrow and five head stitches. The police were shocked when, following the accident, Blanco was more concerned about his bike than himself, so they decided to buy him a new, stateof-the-art bicycle, along with a helmet, so that he could go back to work. The officer, driving the vehicle which struck unlucky Blanco, checked up on him every day, following the accident. When they finally met again, face to face, the officer gave him a hug, along with his new bike. Blanco was unaware of the gesture the generous police officers planned to make, but his girlfriend had been told to bring him to the police station, so that they could surprise him!

AT least three workers, and a local resident, have died, and others have suffered serious body burns and other injuries, following a mighty chemical explosion at a Tarragona’s La Canonja petrochemical plant, on Tuesday evening. One man, admitted to hospital with serious burns, died in the early hours of yesterday morning (Thursday). The shocking explosion has been reported as the most serious chemical accident to occur in Spain over the last decade, and people living in the surrounding areas are now demanding better safety measures. Fingers were pointed at the chemical plant bosses by hundreds of people, gathered in Tarragona’s plaza de la Font on Wednesday afternoon, because of their lack of responsibility, demanding that they take the blame for what happened. A day after the explosion, which is believed to have begun at one of the reactor’s tanks, which contained Ethylene Oxide, firefighters found, buried under debris, the body of a missing operator, who

had been working in the area at the time. A third man who died was a resident from the nearby Torreforta village. He was killed in dreadful circumstances when a piece of roof from the chemical plant broke off because of the explosion. The huge sheet of iron, weighing around one ton, blasted out from the plant and flew some three kilometres through the air. It smashed through a window in the man’s home and caused considerable damage, which resulted in the man collapsing, and dying. The fourth fatality was another of the company’s workers, all admitted in critical condition to the burns’ unit of Barcelona’s Vall d’Hebron hospital. He had suffered 80% burns to his body and, tragically, died on Wednesday afternoon. Another five men were taken into hospital with burns, and three were discharged yesterday (Thursday). Two other victims have been admitted into different hospitals and are both in an extremely serious condition.

Although the circumstances of the accident, and its subsequent management, are still under investigation, sources from the Civil Protection have said that there is no record that the company alerted the CECAT emergency centre, or telephoned 112 to report the accident. Emergency protocols state that companies suffering an accident must activate their internal, self-protection plan. But there are indications that this was also not the case. Another employee was unaccounted for, after the La Canonja plant inferno, while two others were said to be “significantly” injured. A further two walked away with lighter injuries. Dozens of firefighters were tackling the blaze after the initial eruption, at around 6.35pm, sent a huge fireball into the sky. Black smoke could be seen billowing for miles around, and residents were warned to shut their windows and doors as a precaution. However, Government sources confirmed that there had been no toxicity detected in the air. Other buildings on the industrial complex are being inspected over fears that their structures could also be damaged. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is understood to be monitoring the situation closely, while regional president Quim Torra has headed closer to the area.

On-strike airport workers fined after 2010 walk-out MORE than nine years after their 2010 strike, which led to eight major Spanish airports closing, and more than 300,000 passengers stranded, the workers responsible were called to account in front of Madrid judges.

The two-day strike began on 3rd December that year, when Spanish air-traffic controllers walked out on their positions, in a dispute over working hours. It left airports in chaos in the run-up to Christmas, causing the Spanish military to step in and take control of the skies. The strike was a culmination of more than a year of arguments between the controllers and the Spanish Government, and airports’ authority AENA, over the controllers exceeding the maximum working hours regularly, because of the “December Rule”, implemented by Jose Blanco, then the Minister of Public Works. The walk-out caused a state of national alarm for 43 days

afterwards, leaving countless passengers and airlines stranded, and a total of 1,352 flights cancelled. Following the first trial of workers which took place in Palma, the Madrid hearings are the largest of its kind, with 133 workers, overall, sitting before the judges. They are charged with “the crime of abandoning public service”’ and causing the financial damages of the passengers involved.

In a private agreement with the prosecutor’s office, 126 of the 133 workers have admitted responsibility for their charges. They have accepted responsibility for the financial losses of the passengers, in the form of €1,000 compensation for each of the 15,190 who filed an official complaint, plus €150 for expenses incurred. The total compensation is expected to reach more than €17m!

STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for, over the next couple of weeks. Latest currency news The pound has been driven lower, over the last couple of weeks, as Brexit-related uncertainty, and a dovish Bank of England (BoE), take their toll on the currency. This has seen GBP/EUR slump from 1.18 to 1.16, as EUR/ GBP accelerated to 0.85. Meanwhile, GBP/USD has slipped from 1.32 to 1.29, whilst EUR/USD eased from 1.12 to 1.11.

Pound starts 2020 on a sour note, as the Brexit uncertainty returns

The pound is off to a poor start, so far, in 2020, with investors fearing the UK will face a no-deal Brexit, this year, amid scepticism that Boris Johnson will be able to reach a trade deal with the EU, by December. Also weighing on sterling sentiment have been some dovish remarks from the BoE, sparking speculation that the bank could cut interest rates, in the first half of 2020. The euro has also struggled, over the past couple of weeks, undermined by some weak, German, economic data, and broad USD strength. This uptick in the US dollar has been largely driven by a risk-off mood in markets, in light of heightened tensioins in the Middle East, following the US killing of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani. What do you need to look out for? In the UK, the spotlight is likely to remain on Brexit, through the remainder of January, as the country prepares to

officially leave the EU, at the end of the month. For EUR investors, the focus will be on the European Central Bank (ECB), as it holds its first rate decision of 2020, and begins a wide-ranging review into its policy strategy. Meanwhile, the US dollar may strengthen, in the weeks to come, as the signing of a

“phase-one” deal, between the US and China, will help to ease trade tensions, between the two powers. At Currencies Direct, we’re here to talk currency, whenever you need us, so get in touch if you want to know more about the latest news, or how it could impact your currency transfers.

Jealous VOX party man battered pal in love row A CANDIDATE for the Spanish VOX party has been arrested, after giving a friend of his ex-partner a savage beating in the Malaga district of Estepona.

THE Guardia Civil are warning the public over a scam involving “false” keyboards at Spanish cashpoints. Thieves are believed to be sticking the fakes over existing keypads, to either confuse cashpoint users, or detect PIN codes. “If your details have been entered correctly, but the cashpoint does not give you the money, do not leave,” said a Guardia statement. In the event of this happening, check whether the keypad is false, and, said the statement, watch out for “helpers” coming over to offer a hand. That’s because a seemingly Good Samaritan is part of the scam. “Call your bank or you card issuer, to check that no unauthorised payments have been made,” the statement added.

Ismael A.S., aged 55, who was No.2 on Vox’s Manilva list in the recent municipal elections, admitted the crime at his local National Police station. The attacker, an alarminstaller for a “well known security company”, said he became enraged when he saw his ex’s car parked next to their mutual friend, in the La Resina area on 16th December. His friend went outside to pick up some papers from his vehicle at around 11.30am, when Ismael jumped him. The victim, a lawyer, tried to escape to his car but was overwhelmed by his assailant, who, reportedly, said his pal was to blame for his partner dumping him. A young Bulgarian man approached the pair, causing Ismael to scurry to his car and drive off. The passer-by snapped a picture of the car, which he

later showed police, although their search for the attacker ended the same day, when he handed himself in. The victim was beaten so badly that he required several metal plates and screws in his face, to fix multiple fractures. He was first taken to Marbella’s Costa del Sol Hospital, before being referred to Malaga’s Maxillofacial Surgery, in Estepona, where he had to spend 10 days in intensive care, doctors saying he

faced a long recovery. Ismael told officers he was being treated for depression, and, when he saw the cars parked next to each other, he lost his head. However, he now awaits his day in court. A Vox party statement said it condemned all acts of violence, adding: “He is deeply sorry. He has requested his withdrawal as a party member, and has told us he will not be seeking any further election.”

Best Home Cook

The search for the Best Home Cook continues as Mary Berry, the queen of home cooking, Michelinstarred chef Angela Hartnett and produce expert Chris Bavin, put the remaining seven skilful home cooks through the culinary ringer. This week Mary challenges the cooks to produce their Ultimate kid’s birthday cake in just three hours, and to pile on the pressure she reminds the cooks that she knows a thing or two about birthday cakes! Chris wants to see what they can do with a classic leftover ingredient - and as if cooking without a recipe wasn’t tough enough, he’s stripped back their larders even more than usual. After an hour Mary, Angela and Chris give their verdict on the cooks’ creations, and there are triumphs as well as disasters. The judges must then decide, taking both the Ultimate and the Rustle Up into account, who is safe and who needs to prove themselves by cooking again in the Eliminator. The cooks dread having to take part in Angela’s brutal Eliminator round, having seen three of their fellow cooks fall at this hurdle they know just the tiniest of slip-ups can see you out of the competition. With the judges out of the way, the safe cooks watch on the edge of their seats. At the end of this round, the judges must agree which is their least favourite version of the dish, and with that decision made all the cooks return to the kitchen. Everyone learns at the same time which cook is leaving the competition, and the cooks must say goodbye to another of the group. Seven become six.

Thursday 23rd January, ITV1, 21.00 Using rarely-seen footage and revealing historical documents, this major new four-part series tells the inside story of Queen’s reign from the Coronation to the present. Historians, eyewitnesses, and royal insiders offer new insights on the pivotal moments in the Queen’s life, with intriguing revelations about the real woman behind the Crown. Queen Elizabeth II has been on the British throne for 67 years. A record-breaking reign which began at the dawn of the TV age as nearly 300 million people watched her glittering Coronation. The event marked a turning point for war ravaged Britain, as it entered a new Elizabethan age. In the years since, Queen Elizabeth II has become one of the most respected leaders on earth. Her story over the past seven decades has fascinated and delighted people, not just in Britain but around the world. Themed across four episodes the series provides fresh insight from historians, biographers, royal insiders and the wider family along with eyewitnesses who all contribute to a new intimate portrait of the Queen and her family at key moments. Each programme addresses a theme that has dominated the lives of Elizabeth and her family from ‘Love & Duty’ and ‘Front Page News’ to ‘Trials and Tribulations’ and ‘The Top Job’. Each episode is packed with rarely seen archive and recently unearthed documents which shed new light on often told stories. The four episodes create a series full of stories that reveal more about who the Queen and her family really are and how they have navigated the often turbulent times of her record-breaking reign. Episode 1 – Love and Duty Harry and Meghan are the latest royal love story. Theirs is the new fairy-tale romance that has fascinated the world, but after the excitement of the wedding the reality of the job kicks in. Will the couple be able to balance the pressures of love versus duty? For them only time will tell, but history has shown that royal marriage is a hard road to walk. Edward VIII nearly brought down the House of Windsor when he chose love over duty. Giving up his throne for the woman he loved - divorcee Wallis Simpson. Edward’s decision would cast a long shadow over the Windsors for decades to come. Because of Edward’s actions, when a young Elizabeth married her dashing naval officer, Philip, they knew the pressure was on them to re-build the image of the royal family. Theirs has been a stable royal marriage unlike any other. They have made it through ups and downs and today the Queen calls him her ‘strength and stay’. But the Queen’s steadfast marriage has proved an exception rather than the rule. Three of her four children’s marriages have broken down and ended in divorce. Charles’ being the most public and destructive, as his fairy-tale marriage to Diana quickly turned into a nightmare. The Queen’s sister, Margaret, also had to make a stark choice when she fell in love with divorcee Peter Townsend. Would she too choose love over duty or would she follow her sister’s advice and put the Crown first? The British monarchy has learnt through bitter experience that the secret to a successful royal marriage comes when love is perfectly balanced with duty.

Midsomer Murders

DCI Barnaby’s Dad NED (Christopher Timothy) has come to town. An avid ballroom dancer in his heyday, Ned is delighted to learn that his trip to Midsomer coincides with the annual ‘Paramount Dance Extravaganza’; a challenging ballroom dancing competition taking place over 4 nights. This year, the event is sponsored by Andrew Wilder (Nigel Havers) and ‘The Wilder Institute’ – an impressive research facility that develops exoskeletons and prosthetics for amputees, the disabled and elderly… as well as developing robotic aids for construction workers and manufacturing industries. Andrew made his fortune as a high street mogul, but decided to develop The Wilder Institute when he was diagnosed with a degenerative brain condition, with the aim of helping people like him live a more comfortable life. With time running out for Andrew, he now has to decide who to leave his impressive empire to; his ambitious and power hungry daughter HEATHER (Jaye Griffiths), or his desperate to please son RAY (Tom Chambers), who seems more at home on the dance floor than in a boardroom, despite his latest business venture with business partner and Heather’s fiancé, JAKE (Jack Hawkins). The dance show gets off to an impressive start, but behind the sequins and smiles it’s clear to see that the dancers are harbouring deep seated jealousies that go back years. And none harbour more resentment than dancer ROSA CORRIGAN (Faye Tozer), who is boiling over with anger after her dance partner happened to be detained the day before the competition at immigration. Sick of watching her competitors sashay across the dance floor, Rosa storms off home… only to be later found murdered, choked with the tulle from her flamboyant dance costume. Looking into her background, Barnaby and Winter discover that Rosa was in fact a journalist, mostly focused on low level local news stories… had she started to investigate something that someone would rather keep hidden? Or could this all really be about ancient grudges from the dance floor?

Having followed the wrong boy for years, Aziraphale and Crowley must now try to locate the whereabouts of the real Antichrist. Perhaps the story of 17th century witch Agnes Nutter (Josie Lawrence) and her famous prophecies will hold the answer?

Grantchester

Will and Leonard witness a deadly and deliberate hit-and-run in Grantchester. Geordie traces the car to a pair of decidedly dysfunctional brothers whose house lies far off the beaten path. The victim’s wife, his employee and the two brothers are all damaged characters caught in a web of lies and betrayals, and it’s not just secrets that are hiding within the brothers’ grounds. And at home, Will and Geordie both struggle as unwelcome guests look set to stay. Will’s mum Amelia seems to have found a carbon copy of his late father in her new beau, St John. All of which makes Will supremely grateful for his new mission at the boxing gym, helping wayward youths with new pal, Vic Morgan. And a new television set lands in the Vicarage - just in time for Eurovision! As Leonard tries to bustle Mrs C out for the night, is it more than just this ‘coming together of nations’ that’s getting him excited?

It’s the start of another season on the party island of Ibiza and with the holidaymakers making ready for a summer of fun Head Rep David is busy gathering his team of reps to give the guests the weekend of their lives. With a new team ethos in place of ‘back to basics, guests come first’ will David be able to keep his crew focused on the job in hand? El Jefe, David, is back and along with his new pet, Fish Jenna, is joined by the experienced team of Jordan, Callum and Tash but before the first set of guests arrive two new reps are introduced to the team and put through their paces. Luckily Callum and Tash are more than happy to welcome wholesome Welsh Riva and London joker Jaden. Leaving loved up ex-Lothario Jordan happy to concentrate on the job, especially when David gives him some extra responsibility and a sash as the new Guest Satisfaction Manager. With the arrival of the guests the weekend is primed to go off with a bang and its not long before the flirtation and fun starts. Much to David’s horror though the new reps are quickly led astray by Callum and Tash leaving Jordan and David to carry the night and ensure the guests have fun. As a result Callum and Riva get punished for their lack of interest in the guests and David has them clean out Fish Jenna while staying in. Meanwhile Tash seems to be hitting it off with one of the boy guests on the night out but upsets things again when making an obvious beeline to new rep Jaden’s bed as soon as returning to the hotel. Luckily Jordan lives up to his title as the new guest satisfaction manager and the guests leave having had a great weekend. But an outstanding weekend from Jordan does not make a balanced team and David is left eyeing up some extra support from his old staff…

Canvas What a sweetie!

creativity! HAVE you ever wondered what old, terrace, canvas blinds can be used for, when they’re replaced? Possibly not, but our volunteers have had some great ideas to help the kittens in our care, using it. One of our valued sponsors, Andrew Hartley of Lightning Signs and Blinds, provides us with many metres of used canvas. It’s extremely hard wearing, and our volunteers make shopping bags which are strong enough to carry heavy tins, without the handles breaking, and sell them to raise funds. A great purchase, as long as you like stripes! They are extremely popular, but most of the material is used by our carers for our intake of foster babies. KittyCatz volunteers make little beds for sick kittens. We are ever-mindful of spreading disease from kitten to kitten, so these durable beds can be boiled and bleached, several times, ready for the next visitor. The beds are specially made to keep our patients safe; we don’t want them rolling out, during rehabilitation. They have been through enough in their tiny lives, without damaging their fragile limbs. Recently, we had three kittens who had ringworm, which is

highly contagious, so we had to throw away their greenstriped beds, after each treatment. We used six of our canvas beds that month, so thank you, Andrew, for the continued supply of canvas. Did you know that ringworm isn’t actually a worm? It’s a fungal infection which looks like scales, mostly in the shape of a ring, hence the name. If there are several kittens sharing the same space, they will surely catch it. It takes six weeks to cure, and the treatment is expensive. It can infect humans, too, so we have to be extra vigilant with our cleaning routines, washing everywhere and everything the kitten has touched. So, no kissing their cute faces! It’s best to wear gloves to contain the spread, especially if you have your own cats, like most of our volunteers do. As an extra precaution, where there’s an outbreak, we shower in a special treatment gel. It’s a really pretty colour pink, but don’t let that fool you. It stinks! After six weeks of treatment, the foster kittens are no longer cute balls of fluff, which most people want when they adopt, so they very often lose their opportunity of being adopted in Tenerife. Thankfully, we do sometimes find loving homes with our partners in Germany. More about that, in a future edition. Follow our work on Facebook, or our website www.kkittycatz. net.

K9 Animal News HOW cute is that face? Doesn’t he look like a good boy? That is because that is exactly what he is. For Game of Thrones’ fans, you will know where his name came from. Kahl’s story didn’t have a happy beginning. One Sunday morning, a few months ago, one of the volunteers was driving up to start her day at K9. As she pulled up, she noticed a bag of food and a red blanket outside, near the bench. As she was getting out of the car, she noticed a little pair of eyes looking at her from behind the bench. Another abandoned puppy! Fiona spoke calmly to him, and, within a few seconds, he realised she was there to look after him, and he showered her with kisses and affection. He had been abandoned outside, the night before, not even tied up, and just left to wander around. For some reason, he stayed near his blanket. He was named Kahl, and he became loved, instantly, by everyone at K9. He was still a puppy, but was so loving and trusting to everyone who met him. He still is. He has grown now, as puppies do, and is so willing to learn new things.

He has been going to a dogtraining class every week, and does so well, showing how clever he can be, and how well he can get on with other dogs. He loves to play and run around, and, for a dog of his age and size, this is what he needs. Everyone who comes to K9 and meets Kahl has an instant smile on his or her face. He is such a sweet boy. and everyone falls in love with him. He did share with an older male dog, Mufasa, who has now been adopted. He was very sweet, obedient boy, and they were matched well. He now shares with two other male dogs, who are currently reserved and going to their forever homes soon, which

means he will be left on his own again. Can you offer him a forever home? If you go on to our Facebook page, you will see further pictures and videos of Kahl. He didn’t deserve to be left outside our gate, not knowing what he had done wrong. He can be easily trained with patience, and the right person who wants to help him learn. He shows so much love to everyone, so can you show him the love he deserves? Come and meet him at K9, any day between 9.30am1.30pm. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. Fine wine just might have MANY of us wonder whether a leftover, or old, bottle of wine is still OK to drink. While some things get better with age, that doesn’t necessarily apply to an opened bottle of wine.

Food and beverages do not last forever, and this holds true for wine, as well. Unopened wine Although unopened wine has a longer shelf life than opened wine, it can go bad. Unopened wine can be consumed past its printed expiry date, if it smells and tastes OK.

have to be sniffed at! general, lighter wines go bad a lot faster than darker varieties. Once wine is opened, it’s exposed to more oxygen, heat, light, yeast and bacteria, all of which can cause chemical reactions that alter the quality of the wine. Storing wine in lower temperatures will help slow down these chemical reactions, and keep opened wine fresher, for longer. Here is a list of common wines, and an estimation of how long they will last, once they are opened: *Sparkling:1-2 days

*Light white and rosĂŠ:4-5 days *Rich white:3-5 days *Red wine:3-6 days *Dessert wine:3-7 days *Port:1-3 weeks The best way to store opened wine is tightly sealed in the refrigerator. Bottles of still, or non-sparkling, wine should always be decanted, prior to storing. Signs your wine has gone bad Besides looking at the printed expiry date, there are signs that your wine, both opened and unopened, has gone bad. The first way to check is to look for any change of colour.

For the most part, darkcoloured wines, such as purple and red, that turn a

brownish colour, as well as light white wines, that change to a golden or opaque colour, should be discarded. The change in colour typically means that the wine has been exposed to too much oxygen. Unplanned fermentation can also occur, creating unwanted tiny bubbles in the wine. Smelling your wine is also a good indicator of whether it has gone bad. A wine that has been left open for too long will have a sharp, vinegar-like smell, similar to that of sauerkraut. Wine that has gone stale will

start to have a nut-like odour, or smell like apple sauce or burnt marshmallows. On the other hand, wine that has never been opened, but has gone bad, will smell like garlic, cabbage or burnt rubber. Wine that has gone bad will have a sharp, sour or burntapple-sauce flavour. Looking at the wine cork can also give you an idea. A wine leak that is visible in the cork, or a cork pushing past the wine-bottle rim, could be a sign that your wine has undergone heat damage, which can cause the wine to smell and taste duller.

By MIke Broeckaert from Direct Telecom

WHEN we are out and about, none of us turns off the WiFi on our devices, so, wherever we go, our WiFienabled devices are constantly “searching” for a known WiFi network to connect to. It is also extremely common for us to ask for the WiFi password in the hotels where we stay, or the restaurants and coffee shops we visit. Of course, we don’t want to use up our 3G/4G mobile data, or we simply hope to enjoy a faster bandwidth connection, by connecting to the WiFi network that is offered to us for free, but what are the risks for you, if any? Public WiFi networks Regardless of whether the WiFi network is passwordprotected or not, you are, essentially, forming part of a network in which there can be a whole lot of other people. It’s like accessing a house, with or without a key. Once you are inside, you could stay in the lounge or you could “snoop around”. It is never easy to know “how safe” the network is, because this depends, largely, on who is offering it, how it was built, what equipment is running the network, and the level of expertise/experience of the

17th January - 23rd January 2020

All you need to know about Public Wi-Fi, and how it could affect you

people who put it all together. Often, these WiFi networks are set up and offered with the simplest equipment, despite the best intentions. Even if a password is required to access the WiFi, many are unaware of the potential vulnerabilities, such as if there is anyone inside the same network, with more-devious intentions. After all, a “network” is a bunch of devices that are connected. Even if wirelessly, they are still connected. As the devices inside the network are all connected to each other, either directly, or through a “router”, it means that it could be possible for

someone else to see what stuff you have in your device, or simply intercept and “sniff” your data traffic. What damage can this do to you? If a person with bad intentions is also connected to the same WiFi network as you are, they could play with a whole variety of techniques, to either access information on your device, directly, or “sniff” your data traffic. If they are “sniffing” your data traffic, they are looking for information which is not encrypted, and hope that, in this exchange of information, they might be able to pick up usernames and passwords for your social-media or email

accounts, bank accounts etc. Of course, once they obtain this information, there are a lot of things that can be done, ranging from identity theft and access to private information, to economic loss. Some hackers are even capable of simulating or building a “fake” WiFi network with their laptop, which creates a “pretend WiFi” network, with the same name as the one you are expecting to connect to. Of course, if you connect to this WiFi network, you are connecting directly to the hacker’s computer (instead of the intended WiFi network),

where they would be able to see almost all data traffic, and read almost all the information. What can you do to reduce the risks? Although the chances of you being affected are low, and you are probably an unlikely target for hackers, it is important that you are, at least, aware of these vulnerabilities, and that you understand, more or less, what it means to be connected to a WiFi network. The safest bet is to not use public WiFi networks. Try to use only your own WiFi at home, and use the 3G/4G for data when outside. If you are going to connect to public WiFi networks outside your home, then try to do so at establishments which you feel you can trust, because it is also true that many establishments have some well-built and wellmaintained WiFi networks, too. Other than that, it is also very important that your devices are updated to the latest Firmware/Software releases, because the vulnerabilities on your device are usually found on “older versions”, that have not been updated. We sincerely hope this information was useful, and we look forward to sharing some more tips with you, in due course.

Depression in the air

By Val Sainsbury PEOPLE living with air pollution have higher rates of depression and

suicide, a systematic review of global data has found. Cutting air pollution around the world, to the EU’s legal limit, could prevent millions of people becoming depressed, the re-

search suggests. This assumes that exposure to toxic air is causing these cases of depression. Scientists believe this is likely, but is difficult to prove beyond doubt. The particle pollution analysed in the study is produced by burning fossil fuels in vehicles, homes and industry. The researchers said the new evidence further strengthened calls to tackle what the World Health Organisation calls the “silent, publichealth emergency” of dirty air. “We’ve shown that air pollution could be causing substantial harm to our mental health, making the case for cleaning up the air we breathe even more urgent,” said Isobel Braithwaite, at University College London (UCL), who led the research. Meeting the EU

limit could make a big difference, she said. “You could prevent about 15% of depression. It would be a very large impact, because depression is a very common disease, and is increasing.” More than 264 million people have depression, according to the WHO. “We know that the finest particulates from dirty air can reach the brain via both the bloodstream and the nose, and that air pollution has been implicated in increased brain inflammation, damage to nerve cells, and to changes in stress-hormone production, which have been linked to poor mental health,” Braithwaite said. Joseph Hayes, also at UCL, and part of the research team, said: “The evidence is highly suggestive that air pollu-

tion itself increases the risk of adverse, mental-health outcomes.” The research, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, used strict quality criteria to select and pool research data from 16 countries, published up to 2017. This revealed a strong statistical link between toxic air and depression and suicide. This is supported by more recent research, including studies that linked air pollution with “extremely high mortality” in people with mental disorders, and a quadrupled risk of depression in teenagers. Other research indicates that air pollution causes a huge reduction in intelligence, and is linked to dementia. A comprehensive global review earlier in 2019 concluded that air pollution may be

damaging every organ, and virtually every cell in the human body. Scientists say small increases in risk can still result in harm to many people, because more than 90% of the global population lives with air pollution above WHOrecommended levels. “This is something everyone is exposed to, so, at the population level, it is potentially concerning,” said Braithwaite. The studies analysed took account of many factors that might affect mental health, including home location, income, education, smoking, employment and obesity. But they were not able to separate the potential impact of noise, which often occurs alongside air pollution, and is known to have psychological effects.

CD Tenerife

Defensive errors prove expensive for Tenerife

FOLLOWING a great home win to kick off 2020, Tenerife had two away games this week, in the Copa del Rey and the League.

They started by travelling to Raya Majadahonda last Saturday for a tricky 2nd-round cup tie, which was fiercely fought and finished 1-1, because neither side would budge in open play. But Tenerife finally came out on top, winning on penalties, to continue their good start to the year. They then faced a tough away League clash on Wednesday against fourth-placed Huesca, who have looked good so far this year, as they chase promotion. Tenerife coach Baraja, aware that his side were chasing a real challenge, played it sensibly with a composed back-line, leaving out Sipcic who has been off the pace. He chose to start with Moore on the left, Luis Perez on the right, with Álex Muñoz and Alberto in the centre of the defence. The rest of the starting XI was much as expected, as he stuck with the youngsters, Elliot and Jorge Padilla, on the left wing and up front. From the first whistle, the game displayed frantic pace, and perfectly for Tenerife! They broke down the right side and Luis Pérez pulled back a cross from the by-line, right into the heart of the Huesca area. Josue Sa intercepted and headed it clear, but only

SD Huesca 2 CD Tenerife 1

as far as Aitor Sanz, who volleyed it from 20 yards, straight past Fernandez, who could do nothing to stop the wonder strike. Unbelievably, with only four minutes gone, Tenerife were leading 1-0. But at times they can be their own worst enemy, and this was certainly the case just three minutes later, when they gifted Huesca an equaliser. Miguelon found himself in space on the right and crossed for Mikel Rico in the Tenerife box. Somehow, all the CDT defenders moved away from Rico, leaving him completely free in front of goal, and he just tapped the ball past Dani Hernández to level the score, with seven minutes gone! The equaliser seemed to settle Huesca, who began playing some really good football, showing the class which has given them an excellent start to the season.

And in the 19th minute, provider became scorer after Ferreiro beat Luis Pérez and put in a perfect cross that found Miguelon at the far post. Moore should have done better, but Miguelon took it first time on his left foot, and slotted past Dani Hernandez to put the home team ahead. After their super start, the two goals wrecked the Tenerife players’ spirits, and Huesca started to dominate them. But as time went on, Baraj’s men composed themselves, and had some good chances as half-time approached, the best of them from Jorge in the 36th minute, which forced a good save from Fernandez. After the break, Tenerife seized the initiative, and took the game to Huesca, trying to find a way through for an equaliser. But, little by little, the passage of play became balanced. In the dying minutes, CDT threw everything at the Huesca goal, and the final whistle couldn’t come quickly enough for the home team. They clung on for the win, the three points maintaining their League position. But for Tenerife, it was an unfortunate defeat because a draw would have been fairer. Apart from a couple of isolated mistakes, they had produced a better, overall performance. The problem lies in their mistakes, which are costing them dearly and need rectifying, especially before their home match with Girona on Sunday.

Chris Froome back on course, and after glory CHRIS Froome, who leads Team Ineos, has responded to press reports about him leaving a training camp early.

The four-time Tour de France champion (pictured left) points out that his last camp was in early December, and not more recently, as suggested. From his Gran Canaria training camp, Froome again took to social media to assure his followers that he was in good spirits, and training hard.

“On training camp... Or maybe not. No, really, I am,” he wrote, in a cheeky Twitter message, accompanied by a picture of him and a number of other Team Ineos riders out training. It seemed to back up the rumour that he and his team-mates had found the previous confusion funny. Such confusion had come after Ineos sports director Dario Cioni was quoted in the Italian press, in Bicisport and on SpazioCiclismo.com, as being concerned about Froome’s recovery from a serious crash at last year’s Critérium du Dauphiné. He said Froome had returned home after two days of training in Spain, and added: “He’s not well, and who knows if he will recover?” The camp in question was apparently in Mallorca, and while he didn’t deny, expressly, that he had left it early, Froome made it clear that the training camp had been some time ago. He posted last Sunday evening: “Hope I can set this straight. I was last at a training camp at the beginning of December. My recovery is going well and I will be heading to my next training camp on Thursday. Onward.” Team Ineos principal Dave Brailsford, meanwhile, moved to defend his rider further, in the aftermath. “No one should under-estimate Froome,” Brailsford told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport. “He and Ineos will really do everything they can to get him to his best, by the start of the Tour de France in Nice, on Saturday, June 27.” Since last Thursday, Froome has been in Gran Canaria with a number of team-mates, including fellow British rider Tao Geoghagen Hart, former world champion Michal Kwiatkowski, veteran German rider Christian Knees and Ireland’s Eddie Dunbar. With any alarm about his fitness now over, and with Froome continuing to joke about it, it appears that the 34-year-old is back on track, training, and building up for whatever challenge 2020 holds, with all his efforts focused on reclaiming the kind of form that saw him claim four previous Tours.

Nandu’s ‘wise’ lesson, from legendary stars

Emerald B too green for the Mad Hatters THE league resumed last Friday, with more 180s than you can throw a stick at… or a dart, for that matter! In Division 1, Mad Hatters took on Emerald B at home, and a good match came down to Emerald needing the trebles for a draw. But despite having five darts to hit the winning double, the match went to Mad Hatters because their pocket rocket wasn’t so wasteful, clinching the double for a 5-3 win. Two of the top teams met, when Pas’ O’ Nadas A, who were in excellent form, travelled to Gaffers#teamhollywood, and Andy was gracious with his comments: Gaffers#TeamHollywood 1 Pas’ O’ Nadas A 7 “Trebles to Pas’ O’ Nadas, 180s for Wayne x2, Daddy Cool & Andy Pas’O’Nadas. Sometimes you ride your luck and get the rub of the green, and tonight we did. “These two teams are at the top of the league on merit, performing week in, week out, and tonight Nadas claimed the victory. “But Gaffers are a more-thancapable team. Thanks to Neil, Terry, Daniel, Joe, John, Matt, Tommo and Gary, for a great night.” Scooters &Chevys ‘A’ v Sandys Bandit Here is Duncan’s verdict:

“Scooters A 4, Sandys bandits 4. Singles 2.3, doubles 2.0, trebles to Sandys. Well, what can I say? Apart from the 5-leg first game, won by Scooters, all games went to four legs. “Scooters won that, and it was Tony’s first 5-leg game. He won. Well done, but he took ages. It was a fair score at the end of the night. Thanks to the staff, good food. All the best to Sandy Bandits.” Waterfall v Suters 20;30 Crew As is the norm with Waterfall, don’t know much about this one, except that it finished 6-3 to Suters, and Nick was rightly chuffed with his ton finish: 20 and 2 double tops, which was the first time, apparently, that he’d gone that way. Nice one! Sandys Bookie Boys, had 180s from Taylor and Daz, and it was enough to help them to a draw with visiting Pas O Nadas International. The Loch Inn Bullseyes v The Pub This was looking like a close affair, with the match sitting at 3-2 to

division 1 ResultS

The Pub, after the singles. But they were unrelenting from there on, and won the rest for a 6-2 result, no doubt helped by Pete’s 180. Division 2 had a few cancellations, but four matches went ahead, starting with Ourplace Playgirls v Clouseau’s. This was another 3-2 match after the singles. But the Playgirls won both doubles to take it to 5-2, before Clouseau’s took the trebles, leading to a respectable, 5-3 home win. Naughty Nautas hosted the Club House, and not much info on this one, except that Nautas won the trebles, but lost 6-2. Sundowners v Pink Elephant Again, The Pink Elephant showed how good they were. Kim nicked a leg for Sundowners, and Paula pinched two. But, sadly for them, the rest went to the away team, for a 7-1 result. Club Activo also proved how good they were, but you can’t have a write-up without something from Graham, so here it is: “Activo v Breakaways: Result 7-1 to Activo, trebles to Activo. Well, Fudder and the gang came up the hill and nearly froze to death! “But it was a great night of darts and some good banter. Thanks to the bar for the food.” At least the pain was eased for Fudder, because he was the only winner for Ourplace Breakaways. The three remaining Division 2 matches were postponed.

INTERNATIONAL Rugby League stars offered “words of wisdom” to Nandu’s youngsters last week. They watched the German national squad and St Helens Rugby League players train at La Caleta’s T3 sports facility, and it provided an excellent opportunity for the Nandu players to watch the professionals in action. St Helens team, who are the Super League champions, will soon challenge Sydney Roosters for the title of World Club Champions. Their team of stars, from across the globe, put on a dazzling display of handling skills, before embarking on a full-contact game, against one another! The team then took time to chat to some of the Nandu coaches and junior players, before presenting them with a club shirt. These players are ferocious machines on the field, yet they are so humble and polite off it. What a superb example for any young rugby player.

Ramos spot-on to give the Super Cup to Real

SERGIO Ramos led 10-man Real Madrid to a 4-1 win on penalties over rivals Atletico in Saudi Arabia, to claim the club’s 11th Spanish Super Cup. The Galacticos captain put away the decisive spot-kick at Jeddah’s King Abdullah Sports City Stadium, after the dramatic derby finished 0-0 after 90 minutes, and was still goalless after 30 extra-time minutes. One of the match’s main moments was the dismissal of Federico Valverde, the Real midfielder, who accepted a red card to keep his team in the tie. It came as he took out Atletico’s Alvaro Morata when he was clean through, in the last five minutes of extra- time. His actions led Atletico boss Diego Simeone to name him: “The game’s most valued player because he won the final with his foul”. The cynical tackle, on the edge of the box, led to scuffles between both teams’ players. It came after a first half that lacked spark, in which Joao Felix passed up the only golden opportunity, shooting wide from a Ramos pass on the edge of the area. Not until the 79th minute did Atletico register an on-target shot, when Morata latched on to a cross from Kieran Trippier, only for his close-range volley to be beaten away by Thibaut Courtois.
