Ambassador has bad news for our Tenerife Swallows

Continued from Front

But he did have a shock when made aware that Tenerife’s Swallows would feel shortchanged by the Withdrawal Agreement. That’s because their time in Tenerife will be cut to threemonthly periods when Brexit kicks in next Saturday (1st February). In an Oasis FM interview with Clio O’Flynn after the function, Mr Elliott told her: “I know the Swallows have an issue because they can stay for just 90 days in any 180 days without a visa, and without any provisions. “But we know that many of them like to stay for five or six months at a time. Currently, they can stay for six months, but not in the future, after 31st January. “We will obviously be discussing it over the course of the year, but I can’t yet reassure these Swallows over future arrangements, because it’s

not provided for in the Withdrawal Agreement.” He added: “It’s absolutely on our radar screen, and it may

African migrant group may take to the streets

A GROUP of 57 African men, who arrived in Tenerife by patera, have asked for help after learning that they will be put on the street without any chance of being relocated. They are also without authorisation to travel to the Peninsula. The help has been requested through activist Helena Maleno, founder of Caminando Fronteras, who says the group, from various West African countries, including Senegal, Mali and Sierra Leona, arrived

on the island a month ago. Apparently, the National Police plan to evict them from the Las Americas Police Station. But, she adds: “The migrants are desperate because, through lack of accommodation, they will be living on the streets. The men have asked that they be given the opportunity to travel to the Peninsula, or to other European countries, where they have relatives who could house them. But the police have indicated that they are not authorised to leave the island. Helena Maleno responded by saying that Caminando Fronteras plans to file a complaint with the Ombudsman about the migrants’ problem.

be an issue we can resolve. I can give reassurances that we will discuss the problem the Swallows have, over the course of the year.” “The Withdrawal Agreement, known as the Deal, protects the rights of those Brits already resident in the Canary Islands, and they have until the end of 2020 to formalise their residency. Many have done so, but many haven’t. “In addition, pensioners still have access to public healthcare here if they have an S1 (healthcare certificate) in the UK. That’s protected!” And on the bright side, he added that pensions would continue to be uprated, through inflation. But the Ambassador was delighted to be presented to many Tenerife people whom

he regards as “important” to him. These included Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Martin; Canarian President Angel Victor Torres; Canaries’ Tourism Councillor Yaiza Castilla; British Consul for the Canaries and Andalucía, Charmaine Arbouin, and Vice-Consul for the Province of Santa Cruz, Helen Díaz de Arcaya Keating. He also met Canarian Parliament President Gustavo Matos, as well as the Canaries 112 Emergency Services’ Regional Director, and the Director of Security and Emergencies, along with the President and Vice-President of La Laguna University. HMA Hugh Elliott and the Tenerife Consular team also hosted a lunch with the island’s

most important contacts and partners, including British Library representatives; Royal British Legion representatives; the Lions; Callao Salvaje Community Church; Noah’s Ark; FACT; Tenerife Swallows; Tour Operators Jet2 and TUI; local radio contacts and British Schools’ representatives, along with some of their key influencers and social-media partners. Hugh Elliot was delighted with his first visit to Tenerife, and was extremely proud of the hard work his consular team have performed on the island. He was particularly grateful to all the authorities, contacts and partners, who collaborate so closely and professionally with them every day.

Las Galletas drivers warned THE C8 Facebook page of the Canarian News is raising awareness of street vandalism in Las Galletas.

Several car windows have already been smashed, which is how vandals are getting into the vehicles, mainly to steal items inside. Various car-owners have already made police reports regarding their damaged vehicles, while their cars were parked in the Red Cross parking area, as well as on the general main

road, running alongside the beach. They have warned people to beware of parking their

vehicles in these areas, on their Facebook message, and have also requested more police presence.

A POPULAR Finnish expat has been charged, along with 53 other people, and a pop star, in Finland’s biggest-ever drugtrafficking case. Niko Ranta-aho (below), who was part of the Marbella elite, once owned the popular Teatro in Puerto Banus, a restaurant-cumperformance venue which welcomed such stars as Tyga and Ja Rule. With a property-development company, and a pretty girlfriend, Sofia Belorf, as well as a huge mansion in the exclusive Guadalmina Alta, which is home to the likes of former prime minister Jose Aznar, life seemed perfect for the handsome hunk.

Drug-trafficking scandal as police reveal ‘suspects’

But that all came to an abrupt halt last July when he was arrested in Helsinki, accused of drug-trafficking and moneylaundering in what is seen as the country’s biggest scandal in recent memory. Now, six months later, he has been formally charged alongside 53 others, including his girlfriend.

They are accused of smuggling a wide range of substances into Finland, including more than 200kg of amphetamines, 60kg of hash, 15kg of cocaine, more than 30kg of MDMA, over 100,000 ecstasy tablets, 20,000 LSD tabs, 2kg of crystal meth and around two million pharmaceutical pills. In addition, girlfriend Sofia (right) is believed to have been be accused of moneylaundering. Sofia, money-launderer? According to Finish evening newspaper Ilta Sanomat, the long list of the accused includes entrepreneurs, highprofile family members and the usual suspects from the crime underworld. Helsinki District Court has yet to reveal the full list of offences, or who they correspond to, but the charges have been divided into four categories. Hell’s Angels kingpin Jarkko Laakso, former president of the Cannonball gang, plus

Ari Ronkainen and Finnish body-building champ Kimmo Niemi are also among those charged. The first hearings will begin at Helsinki District Court on January 30. The case also stretched into the country’s celebrity world after Finnish pop star Samu Haber was also charged with drug offences.

Haber admits to a small drug dose According to national tabloid Iltalehti, Haber was charged after it was revealed that he had indulged in drugs at an after-party last summer. The singer-songwriter, also a judge on a TV music competition, denied any links to the gang, as well as to Ranta-aho’s case. “In summer 2019, I attended an after party and I admit having a small dose of drugs there, offered to me for free,” he admitted to Iltalehti. “I am not guilty of any crime and this will become clear during this trial.” Haber took to Instagram to apologise to his fans, writing: “Doing drugs is a crime, and it’s wrong. Imposing a penalty for that is absolutely right. I’ve been really stupid, and there are no excuses. I will learn from this. I apologise for my behaviour to my beloved ones, the band, partners and everyone who might think of me as some sort of a role model.”

TITSA offers 24-hour on the 467 mainline service

THE frequency of TITSA main lines 447, 467 and 473, covering the south, is scheduled to increase, with the 467 running a 24-hour service!

FIVE people were injured on Tuesday morning after being involved in a multiple vehicle collision on the TF-1. The incident happened on a southbound lane near the Guimar tunnel, during

the rush-hour, considered to be the busiest time of the day on the road. The incident caused huge traffic jams, and the emergency services were alerted. The Guardia Civil traffic police, along with the ambulance services, were dispatched and arrived at the scene almost immediately.

The medical teams assessed the injured parties, and four of the five injured people were allowed to leave the scene after suffering minor injuries. The fifth person was taken to hospital for further treatment and observation. Guardia Civil officers remained at the scene to re-establish the safe traffic flow.

It is part of TITSA’S commitment to continue improving its services, to cater for the needs and demands of users. Line 467 (Costa del Silencio-Las Galletas-Los CristianosCosta Adeje-La Caleta) sees the most improvements, to guarantee punctuality at all stops on the route. Last year, the 467 carried almost 2.5 million travellers, which was a 6.51% increase from the previous year. Line 447 (Los Cristianos-Las Américas-San Eugenio-FañabeAdeje-Los Olivos) improves its frequency on working days to 30 minutes. Line 473 (Los Cristianos-Costa Adeje-Adeje El CercoArmeñime-San Juan Beach-Alcalá -Los Gigantes) has the last departure from Los Cristianos, at 00:10, and from Los Gigantes, at 01:25, totalling 67 trips every day of the week. Nine die as Storm Gloria batters helpless Spanish

NINE people have died and four are missing after Storm Gloria continued to batter eastern Spain this week, with high winds, heavy rain, snowfall and huge waves. The storm, which had left 220,000 people in the Tarragona region without electricity on Tuesday, began

to shift away on Wednesday, but some north-eastern and Balearic areas remained on orange alert. A man died of hypothermia in Carcaixent, Valencia, on Wednesday, while a woman was killed in the Alicante province when her home collapsed. An Almeria farmer died after becoming trapped in a greenhouse during a hailstorm, and another man was found dead in a flooded area, a few miles inland from Benidorm.

Gloria had claimed five other lives between Sunday and Tuesday, with winds of up to 90 mph (144kmh) and waves up to 44ft high. One man was run over as he was fitting snow chains on his car tyres in Asturias on Sunday, while another man died after being hit by a roof tile in Ávila the same day. Three other people are thought to have died of hypothermia in Valencia on Monday and Tuesday. Rescuers are still searching for four missing people,

Rock-climber, 60, suffers a bad fall

A 60-YEAR-OLD man was rushed to Hospiten Sur last Sunday, after falling while climbing the Montaña Amarillo in Costa del Silencio. The accident happened on Sunday morning, and the Canarian emergency services were informed by a caller, who requested an ambulance urgently. He said a middle-aged man had

plummeted three metres while rockclimbing, and was injured badly. When the ambulance arrived, the medics could see he had a nasty head injury. He was quickly assessed, and then taken to Hospiten Sur immediately for further treatment and observation. The fire-fighters were also at the scene to assist with the emergency, transferring the man from the precarious area where he had fallen, to where the ambulance was parked.

among them a 25-year-old Briton, who disappeared while riding his motorbike in northern Ibiza. A spokesman for the emergency services said police were alerted by his colleague, who had searched for him after the Briton, on a day off, failed to return from the trip. But the colleague could only find his bike. Dani Palacios, head of Barcelona’s beach services in the north-east, told local broadcaster Betevé that Gloria was the worst sea storm since 2003. The wild weather also brought seawater pouring into the Ebro delta, one of Spain’s

most important wetlands, ruining thousands of hectares of rice plants. “We can’t remember anything similar ever happening,” Local Mayor Lluis Soler told Cadena SER radio. “It’s dramatic to see how the river has overflowed, and the how sea has travelled several kilometres inland.” Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, offered his support and condolences to the families of those killed, adding: “And to those who are suffering the fatal consequences of this stormy weather.” He also thanked the country’s emergency services for their efforts.

Güímar’s annual festival NEWS IN BRIEF for animals’ patron saint

Weather batters Costa Blanca

THIS picture tells the ugly story of last Sunday’s red alert for gale-force winds and turbulent seas in the Gata de Gorgos, on the Costa Blanca, as Storm Gloria blew in. The sizeable palm tree was blown over in the afternoon, directly on top of the parked car, and the entire Marina Alta region was warned of the fearful weather. In fact, Javea was alerted to possible winds of over 80km/h and snow reaching 40cm deep, as well waves topping the eight-metres-high mark. The town council warned on Sunday evening: “Based on adverse weather predictions, and a ‘pre-emergency situation’, all schools, sporting and cultural activities will be cancelled on Monday.”

Harper’s have cashed in

FASHION magazine Harper’s Bazaar Russia has just published a 10-page fashion report, which took place last September in Teide National Park. The publication team comprised seven people, including technicians, assistants and models. This means a €1.7m investment return for Tenerife, compared with under €2,000 from the Cabildo, via Turismo de Tenerife, the Press and public-relations office.

Arona’s record resurfacing

THE Arona municipality will reach a record in the coming months, after resurfacing nearly 200 streets and roads. After many years of abandonment and deterioration, a total investment of more than €5m will have been made under the #AronaAvanza programme. The IV asphalting plan, which has already been awarded, will be signed shortly. This spells good news for Cabo Blanco, La Florida, Arona Casco, Tunisia, Montaña Fría, La Sabinita, La Camella and Chayofa, because they will all benefit from the resurfacing project.

GÜÍMAR hosts its traditional festival of San Antonio Abad, the patron saint of animals, this weekend, which is held in high esteem as it is regarded as one of Tenerife’s most anticipated celebrations. That’s because of the abundance of the municipality’s agriculture and livestock, and it kicks off tomorrow (Saturday), at 4pm, with the traditional “race of rings” on horseback. Then, on Sunday, most of the activities to commemorate the patron saint of animals, will take place. Animals will be seen most prominently, and not just farm pets, as well as sporting and exotic breeds, but also those which accompany visitors. The Plaza and the courtyard of the Town Hall, along with the Plaza de San Pedro, as well as many other spaces, will be transformed into exhibition areas. The events begin at 10am, and the little ones will be able

DRUNKEN holidays in the Balearics will soon become a thing of the past, because the regional government has outlawed all tourism and commercial activities encouraging excess drinking.

Cheap accommodation, flights and packages mean the islands’ coasts are popular with groups of young friends. They are often on one of their first holidays away from home, and the availability and inexpensive nature of alcohol creates round-the-clock drinking. This generally happens in the spring and summer months in certain key resort towns. Anti-social behaviour is usually rife in these areas at night during the high season, with vomiting, nudism and sexual acts in public making life unbearable for locals. In addition, fights, noise and vandalism lower the tone of the area, giving the Balearics an unjustifiably poor image as a bargain-basement holiday destination. The shame is that the Balearic Islands are actually a huge hit with families, culture vultures, history and nature lovers. They have much to offer the discerning visitor at any time of year. But, unfortunately, the drunken antics of mostlyBritish young adults have made international headlines. Now, however, the regional government has finally decided to alter the landscape, targeting the heaviest tourist areas,

Boozy Balearics now facing the unhappy hours

which feature Magaluf, Palma beach and the West End of Ibiza’s San Antonio (Sant Antoni de Portmany). The Ibiza authorities have passed a law, described as “pioneering in Europe”. It means that organised pub-crawls are now illegal, “happy hours” and promotions in bars, such as two-for-one and three-for-one are no longer permitted, and neither are booze cruises. In addition, automatic alcohol dispensers are banned, and shops are prohibited from selling alcohol between 9.30pm and 8am. Also, hotels and restaurants can give each customer a maximum of just three alcoholic drinks, with a main meal. Numerous serious accidents and fatalities have been caused by

northern Europeans, especially young, drunken Brits, falling from balconies, sometimes accidentally, when trying to climb into a neighbouring apartment, via the terrace. Sometimes, they have forgotten their door keys and are attempting to scramble up into their rooms via the outside. Occasionally, though, their actions are deliberate, in a crazy stunt known as “balconing”. This involves their attempts to jump off a balcony into the swimming pool below, or leaping from terrace to terrace. Needless to say, these dare-devils are usually fuelled by drink and bravado, with friends egging each other on. But hotels are now legally obliged to kick out any tourists known to have been

Fans plead to have contestant ditched

FOLLOWERS of Spanish TV’s Talent show Operacíon Triunfo have bombarded the web with tweets, insisting that the Canarian contestant be thrown off the competition after just one show. They are referring to Eli, from Gran Canaria, and followers of the longstanding singing competition, OT2020, want her removed because she has already causing havoc by showing no respect for her show colleagues. The tweeters have compiled the young woman’s inappropriate behaviour during the first week of the current contest, and have denounced the alleged bullying the Canarian is exercising on her partner, Ariadne. “Zero education and respect to your classmates,” says the first tweet, and

this complaint has been taken up by the talent show’s director. He has gathered all contestants and warned that if they continue to disrespect each other, the organisers will take action. Over the years, fans have not been familiar with the sort of behaviour Eli has been displaying in the series.

“balconing”, or encouraging others to do so. The onus is on the hotel or apartment resort to expel the offenders. But if the management decides not to take action, the business can be fined. And those tourists who take part in these foolhardy games could be fined between €6,000 and €60,000.

Hotels, which will also be fined the same sum, can face hefty penalties if they do not warn guests that they risk being removed from the premises if they practise this behaviour. Other stern measures state that rooms cannot be let by the hour, but only overnight, and alcohol advertising is prohibited, as well as any alcohol being on display in hotels. Premises failing to comply could face being shut down for up to three years, with fines ranging from €60,000 to €600,000. There is a host of other “must-nots”, and this is the first law in Europe to restrict promotion and consumption of alcohol in specific parts of towns, as well as being the first to clamp down legally on thoughtless behaviour by hotel guests. The region’s Tourism, Work and Economy Minister, Iago Negueruela, said his team had spoken extensively with hoteliers and resort managers, bars, restaurants, and other, main, commercial players in the holiday industry. He said the law, to apply immediately, would run for five years, initially, although existing contracts held by tour op-

erators and hotels will be honoured, if they are in conflict with the new legislation. Meanwhile, new laws for all-inclusive hotel and restaurant deals will be in place by the end of the year, according to Tourism Minister Iago Negueruela. He told the Balearic parliament on Tuesday: “Zoning and specific limitations will be implemented, in places where mass consumption of alcohol and excesses are encouraged.” The Minister also said that these limitations would affect restaurants, bars, entertainment and shops, as well as hotels in specific areas. The PP Deputy Salomé Cabrera said those affected by the new law were being consulted in a bid to produce a text that all parties can agree to, and the bill, which includes work done by his predecessor, Bel Busquets, will be finished by the end of this year. Cabrera said the document was earmarked for approval in the last legislature, but was delayed because of other issues, such as holiday rentals and regulation of the eco-tax, which were more pressing.

Knife-gang robbers Swapping clothes helps terrified old ladies to keep things greener FIVE thieves, aged 18-28, have been arrested by the National Police after breaking into the home of two elderly women, one in her eighties. They stole a top-end mobile phone, along with cash adding up to 100 euros. A call was made to the police following the incident, just days ago. And yesterday (Thursday), officers issued a public statement, informing the public of the gang’s horrible attack. The officers explained how the thieves broke into the home in Guamasa, La Laguna, by breaking the front-door lock, then forcing their way in All five thieves, wearing hooded clothing, were armed with knives of different shapes and sizes, which were enough to

intimidate the elderly couple. The women were so terrified that they were shaken into telling their aggressors where their money and valuables, as well as their safe, were located. While their home was being ransacked, the women were tied up and locked in a bedroom. Finally, once the gang had searched the premises, they left with the mobile phone and the cash they had taken from the safe. But the officers were able to arrest the group just days after the dreadful incident. The police discovered that four of the five had previously been charged with similar offences, one of the group with an astonishing 72 to his name. Police hunt travel agent after nasty holiday scam AN online travel agent is being sought by police, who have been told she duped customers out of £125,000, ruining dozens of holidays.

Hayley King, 34, is accused of taking money from victims, who were told her Around The World Travel company had booked their trips. Holiday-makers reported turning up at hotels to discover that their rooms had already been booked and paid for. Police have identified 56 alleged victims of fraud from across the UK, with losses of about £125,000. King, previously of Feltham, Middlesex, flew to Fuerteventura on 24th March last year, but doesn’t seem to have returned. Her business collapsed in April and customers have been unable to contact her. She is described as 5ft 10in, of medium build with a scar on her left arm. Effi Gounaris, 30, who planned to go to the Maldives on a “dream honeymoon”, told the BBC she paid £5,000 to King for the trip, which was about half the price of other deals. On the day she planned to surprise new husband Antony

Christodoulou, 31, with the booking confirmation, she was informed by British Airways that her flights had been cancelled. Mrs Gounaris, of Loughton, Essex, who then contacted her hotel, only to find that it had not been paid, said: “I feel embarrassed. Never in a million years did I think I would be victim to a holiday scam.” Detective Constable Ryan Maginnes, of the Met’s economic crime command, said: “We urgently want to trace King. If she is abroad you can contact the local police force.” He added: “It is my fear that there may be other victims who are not yet aware that their holidays have not been paid for.” Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 101, quoting CAD 2225/13JAN, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

THE number of deaths from China’s coronavirus outbreak has nearly doubled, to 17 people in just 24 hours, and Wuhan city, where the disease is thought to have started, is shutting down outbound flights and trains. The state-owned People’s Daily newspaper said in a tweet that no one would be allowed to leave the city of 11 million people after 10am local time yesterday (Thursday) because it had been quarantined. It means that train stations and the airport have shut down, as authorities battle to prevent the virus from spreading. Other forms of public transport in Wuhan were also shut down, with buses and ferries also suspended. Apart from the deaths, more than 500 cases of the disease were confirmed yesterday. And officials in China have stressed that people should not leave the city unless there are special circumstances. The coronavirus is believed to have stemmed from illegally-trafficked animals at a Wuhan market, which has been named as the likely source.

Deadly virus kills 17, and may have spread to the UK

Meanwhile, the Foreign Office has advised Britons against all-but-essential travel to that city. There are fears that the virus has already spread to the UK, and the Government has introduced extra screening to protect people from the deadly disease. “Enhanced monitoring” will be put in place for all direct flights from Wuhan to Britain, said the Department of Health. This includes offering advice to travellers if they feel unwell, and what symptoms to expect, at the worst. All direct flights from Wuhan city to Heathrow will be subjected to enhanced

monitoring, while worldwide city airports have introduced extra checks for passengers, including temperaturescreening. The DHSC confirmed that precautionary measures had been put in place since the virus spread to other parts of the world. Yet hundreds of millions of Chinese people will be travelling at home and abroad for the Lunar New Year holiday. Despite the alerts, though, medics admitted that the threat posed by the coronavirus in the UK was considered “low” at this stage. Two people, who could be Britain’s first victims, have been taken to hospital with flu-like symptoms, as a precaution. A Heathrow spokesman said: “The welfare of our passengers and colleagues is always our main priority, and we are working with the Government to support the implementation of enhanced monitoring measures as a precaution.”

Rex wants a new home! DAY in, day out, we see so many abandoned dogs around the island. They either end up living on the streets, or in the one of the shelters, after being found by someone who happened to be in the right place, at the right time. For this young boy, someone was there, and he was brought to K9 last May, when he was around 5-6 months old. We named him Rex. He was found with another dog, a young female who he seemed close to. They were both found in Los Abrigos with leads on, but, to this day, no owner has come forward. The female, who we named Bo, was adopted a few months ago, but Rex still remains at the shelter. He is about a year old now, and has grown up into a handsome, young boy. He currently shares with another male dog, and they get on fine. Sometimes, the volunteers bring him to the local dog park, where he meets other dogs. He is OK with them. He does have a lot of energy, but is a very sweet boy, and, once he gets to know you, he gains more confidence. When he first arrived he was extremely nervous with all the people at K9, and the surroundings, so he was a bit stressed and was barking etc. He didn’t want anyone to

touch him or pet him, but he wasn’t aggressive. He just backed away, so we let him come to us in his own time, for us to gain his trust. When Bo, his female companion, was adopted, he did seem a little bit lost for a while, wondering where his friend had disappeared to, but he did have Sprite to keep him company. That being said, he deserves a second chance at a loving, forever home. He is a very healthy young dog, but does need a bit of time to get to know you, because he is still a bit nervous with new people. If you can give him a chance and have patience with him, he will become a loving best friend, and great companion. If you cannot adopt him, please share his story to your friends and family, and let us get Rex a new home. He is a young boy who needs a happy life, and we don’t want him spending his life at K9. Please help us. You can call at K9 any day, between 9.30am-1.30pm, and meet all our cats and dogs looking for their forever homes. Come up and say hello and take Rex for a walk. You will not be disappointed. We are on Calle Chimbesque, between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas. Get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468.

KittyCatz News KITTYCATZ are affiliated to the charities Sangha San Miguel Educational Farm and MADAT (Manos Amigas de los Animales de Tenerife). They, as well as us, benefit from the money raised from our Name the Teddy games, which we started in November. Our first game was hosted by Jayne Fearnall at Java Bar, and all the names sold within the hour! Not only has Jayne become the new owner of Java Bar, but she also adopted a kitten from us, who we called Charlie. He had rather a sad beginning. He was found, along with four siblings. They were little, black, fluffy babies of just a day old. By the time one of our volunteers came to their rescue, three were already dead, with just Charlie and his sister left, barely alive.

Accion del Sol News WE would, again, like to remind you all that it is so important to ensure that your dog has been microchipped, with the correct, updated telephone number, so we can reunite you, should it get lost. It saves a lot of time, and your dog a lot of stress. With more than 200 dogs looking for new loving homes at our refuge, please do come and visit us, to see if maybe one dog is the one for you. Every dog has a full, clean bill of health, and is fully inoculated, microchipped, passported and neutered. This is compulsory with all our dogs, to try to reduce the large numbers of unwanted litters, here on our island of Tenerife. There is no adoption fee, but donations are welcomed towards the

SOS for What a lucky boy! Youssef

We are lucky enough to have some amazing vets who give us a charity discount, so Charlie and his sister were given antibiotics and a supply of special kitten milk, and taken home by one of our intensive-care experts. Our team all have special skills, including being able to bottle feed through the night, and provide dedicated, medical expertise. During the

first night of bottle feeding, and around-the-clock care, it was apparent that these poor kittens were much sicker than first thought, and Charlie’s sister didn’t make it through the night. It can be difficult to diagnose the problem when they are only a few days old. We just have to keep trying, and hope that, one morning, green poop has become a bit more solid, and rasps become breaths. It was clear that the litter was abandoned, and they were left to fend for themselves by their mother, because she detected they were too sick. Mother nature is amazing, but brutal, sometimes. The first winner of Name the Teddy was Tricia, and the money raised gives our sick kittens the best start in life.

The special kitten milk and good-quality food comes from the vet. Supermarket brands do not help to fight off off infection. Java Bar also ran a competition to win two hampers over Christmas and New Year, kindly donated by Paul Sharples of Combined Construction Services. Without these acts of kindness, we would not have been able to save Charlie, now named Pascal, who is rumoured to be a little tinker. No Christmas trees are safe, with kittens around! If you are in Los Cristianos, be sure to visit Java Bar and see what you can win. They will be happy to collect your pesky little coins on our behalf, too. Patient Mickey has a new home! WE have some great news! Mickey has been adopted after five, long years. There is a lid for every pot - eventually! Mickey is a stunning-looking animal, and he loves all people. But he’s so big and powerful, and is a breed that suffers massive prejudice. His kennel was the first one inside the shelter, and he would meet and greet all visitors, with that big tail going like a helicopter. Over the years, he has had to watch his kennel mates come in after him, and leave for their new homes, before him. He was always left behind, nobody wanted him. That all changed when a family started coming to the dog-walking club, taking him out, regularly. His personality

shone through, and they took him home for a trial, where he behaved like a proper gentleman. They couldn’t believe such a great dog could have been passed over for so long. He was brought back to the shelter, last week, to sign over his paperwork. The poor boy was distressed, because he thought he was being brought back. But no, this was Mickey’s Gotcha Day! We are over the moon that he has finally got the home he has always deserved. He will never again have to watch, with sadness, others walk out of the gate to their new lives. The moral of the story: please don’t overlook, and swiftly walk past, the larger, older, less-

pretty dogs in a shelter. There could be a diamond in there, just waiting to shine through. Dog-walking club Join our dog-walking club on Saturday mornings from 9am1pm. Our dogs absolutely love it, and you can keep fit and find a furry friend at the same time. Please come and meet the dogs. They have a fabulous time with the walkers, and look forward to going out for a wander. Please feel free to pop along, even for a chat. If you have any questions, send

INHERITANCE-TAX revenue continues to soar for the UK Treasury, reaching a record high of £5.4 billion in 2018/19. Make sure you understand your position, and how you can minimise exposure for your heirs. 1. You could still be UKdomiciled Even after years of living abroad, you could still be considered UK-domiciled, bringing your worldwide estate into lability for 40% UK inheritance tax. While it is possible to adopt a domicile of choice, overseas, by severing all ties with the UK, domicile law is extremely complex. Also, new rules mean that returning to the UK, for a relatively-short period, could reignite inheritance-tax liability. For the best outcome,

24th January - 30th January 2020

Five things expatriates need to know about UK inheritance tax seek specialist, personalised guidance. 2. It affects UK assets, regardless of domicile Even if you are domiciled outside the UK, any British assets will attract UK inheritance tax. Note that before 5 April 2017, property owned through a corporate structure (“enveloped”) was generally exempt, but now all UK residential property is liable, however it is owned. If you hold UK residential property in this way, explore your options, for the most taxefficient way forward. 3. A new relief was recently introduced… Between 2009 and 2017, the only inheritance tax relief was a £325,000 nil-rate band (£650,000 for couples). Now, the “residential nil-rate band” provides extra relief, when passing a main home (including overseas homes) to direct descendants. Currently at £150,000, the threshold increases to £175,000 in April 2020, before tracking inflation. As with the standard allowance, you can transfer any unused balance to your spouse/civil partner, making a total threshold of £1 million for a couple, by 2020/21.

4. …but it has limitations To be eligible for the allowance, the property must be recognised as your main home. As you must have lived in it at some point, this excludes most investment properties. It is only available on property passed directly to children or grandchildren, so homes owned through certain trusts, for example, may not qualify. Estates worth over £2 million have a lower threshold, and those valued over £2.25 million are not currently eligible at all. Note that your entire estate is counted here, including savings and investments, certain trusts, life-insurance policies, pension lump sums

from the death of a spouse/ partner, cars, furniture and personal belongings, such as jewellery. 5. Your home could tip you over the threshold Despite the new allowance, the government’s inheritance tax coffers continue to swell, in large part due to increasing property values. As house prices have risen, so has the number of estates that fall outside the tax-free thresholds, and the amount payable. Meanwhile, the standard relief, frozen at £325,000 since 2009, and fixed until 2021, has not kept pace with inflation, in the way that the value of property or other assets has. However, there are ways

to mitigate UK inheritance tax other than gradually transferring (or spending!) your wealth, within your lifetime. Expatriates can explore using Spanish-compliant investment structures, for example, or acquire a domicile of choice overseas. An adviser with specialist, cross-border expertise can help establish your domicile status, and how UK inheritance tax interacts with Spanish gift and succession tax. With good estate planning, you can structure your wealth to take advantage of all reliefs available, and ensure your legacy ends up in the right hands, without leaving your heirs an unnecessary tax bill. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; individuals should seek personalised advice. Maria is first woman 107 people arrested for ‘stealing’ water to take Guardia reins

THE Guardia Civil is now being run by a woman, Maria Gamez, for the first time in its 175-year history. The Malaga woman, daughter of a lighthouse keeper, adopted the role last Friday to become the first female leader since the Guardia Civil was founded by el Duque de Ahumada, in May 1844. She is now the force’s 86th leader, after impressing Madrid in her previous role as head of the subdelegate government in Malaga. In particular, her “strong” handling of the Julen case last year, which saw a toddler perish after becoming trapped down a well, is said to have brought her closer to the Guardia Civil. It also attracted a great deal of media attention. Defence Minister Margarita Robles was asked to give her approval of Gamez, given that the force is military in nature,

while also performing police functions. Having received her full backing, the Gamez leadership was made official on at a Council of Ministers meeting. She did not want to make a public statement, but was said to be “happy” with the new position. It is not the first time she has made history, because she also became the first woman to head a sub-delegate, Spanish Government, when Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez put her in charge of Malaga in June 2018.

GUARDIA Civil officers have arrested 107 people over a five-month period, for extracting water illegally, following 1,800 inspections, in which they discovered 1,457 illegal wells. One of their most prominent locations was Huelva, with 77. There were also 37 in the Doñana National Park and 35 in Murcia. The use of illegal wells has led to multiple perforations throughout Spain. And these, in turn, constitute an “important risk” for people and for animals, once the activity has been abandoned. In addition, nearly 2,200 infractions have occurred,

most of them classified as breaches of the water regulations, but also the regulations on urban planning and land development. Officers from Seprona, the Guardia’s environmental

agency, have been monitoring this operation through surveillance and control of both underground and surface aquifers, which are layers of water-bearing, permeable rock.

Tiny tot is dumped on street, in a plastic bag THE mother of a baby girl, who was abandoned last Friday on an Orihuela street, is wanted urgently by Alicante’s National Police.

The tiny tot, thought to be a newborn, or just a few days old, was left in a plastic bag. She was discovered by two pedestrians, who had heard

her crying before seeing movements inside the bag. Emergency services were informed immediately and the baby was transferred to the Vega Baja Hospital, where she was said to be in good health. Several more bags containing baby clothes, found next to the infant, have been examined by police and social services, in the hope of tracing her mum. They are also checking the baby’s DNA for any known matches.

The Greatest Dancer

It’s the final week of auditions of the dance talent show - plus tonight it’s Callbacks, where the Dance Captains must fight it out to complete their teams of three acts to take through to next week’s first Live Show. Dancers of any age and dance style compete to win £50,000 and a chance to perform on Strictly Come Dancing. At the auditions the audience still hold the power, and only they will decide if the mirror opens for the acts or not. The dancers need to impress at least 75 percent of the audience for the mirror to open. So far three of the Dance Captains have already chosen one act each for the Live Shows, which means tonight it’s definitely Oti who will be picking an act from the day’s auditions to be in her team. Then it’s Callbacks, where dancers who the mirror opened for return to find out if they are going to make it through to the live shows or not, as the Dance Captains fight it out to pick two more acts each to join their teams. The superstar Dance Captains are: multi-platinumselling singer Cheryl, Broadway and Glee star Matthew Morrison, Strictly Come Dancing Champion Oti Mabuse and choreographer to the stars, Todrick Hall. The series is hosted by singer, rapper and former Strictly Champion Alesha Dixon and Jordan Banjo, member of multi-award winning dance troupe Diversity. Love Island star and professional dancer Curtis Pritchard is the Receptionist who welcomes all the acts backstage as they nervously await the biggest audition of their lives.

Monday 27th January, BBC1, 09.15 Chris Daw QC, one of the country’s most eminent criminal barristers, and Ayesha Nayyar, the Law Society’s Sole Practitioner of the Year, look at how Britain’s courts are handling what many believe is a law and order crisis. Ayesha thinks the system should be prosecuting more, getting higher conviction rates and sending those found guilty to prison for longer. Chris, on the other hand, thinks we’re already doing all that - and it’s not working. He thinks we need to be sending fewer people to jail and for less time. Instead, he believes, the legal system needs to look at solutions that can keep people out of the courts in the first place - namely regulating drugs. Ayesha visits Lowestoft to meet Adele Bellis, who was attacked by a man at a bus stop with acid. However, after suffering months recovering in hospital, it was her experience of going through the courts that left her with psychological scars as bad as those on her face. Not only was she called a liar in court, but her attacker got out after two years and is now free to move back to the area. She doesn’t think she got anywhere near justice. Chris visits Manchester Crown Court where he explains why both sides - including those accused of crime - need to be fairly represented in court. There he meets a former Chief Prosecutor for the North of England, who agrees with Chris that long sentences do not lead to less crime. In the second half of the episode, Chris sends Ayesha to meet former undercover drugs cop Neil Woods, who now thinks that all drugs should be legalised. Only then, he argues, will you take the market off organised crime and reduce the violence that comes with the billion-pound market. Ayesha sends Chris to meet former front line police officer, Norman Brennan, who agrees with her when it comes to cracking down on crime. He thinks the CPS should be renamed the Criminal Protection Service and argues that defence lawyers like Chris are “part of the problem”.

The Windermere Children

August, 1945. A coachload of children arrive at the Calgarth Estate by Lake Windermere, England. They are child survivors of the Nazi Holocaust that has devastated Europe’s Jewish population. Carrying only the clothes they wear and a few meagre possessions, they bear the emotional and physical scars of all they have suffered. From Baftan o m i n a t e d screenwriter Simon Block and Bafta and Emmy-winning director Michael Samuels, The Windermere Children is the first dramatisation of a remarkable true story about hope in the aftermath of the Holocaust, based on the powerful first-person testimony of survivors who began their new lives in the UK. The drama is led by a stellar cast including Thomas Kretschmann (The Pianist), Romola Garai (The Miniaturist), Tim McInnerny (Strangers) and Iain Glen (Game Of Thrones). Charged with looking after the children is child psychologist Oscar Friedmann (Kretschmann). Along with his team of counsellors, including art therapist Marie Paneth (Garai), philanthropist Leonard Montefiore (McInnerny) and sports coach Jock Lawrence (Glen), they have four months to help the children reclaim their lives. By the lake, the children learn English, play football, ride bikes, express their trauma through painting - and begin to heal. Some locals taunt them, but they are embraced by others. Haunted by nightmares, they yearn for news of their loved ones. When the Red Cross arrives with letters about the fates of their families, none of them receive good news. But in the absence of relatives, the children find family in each other. The Windermere Children is the stark, moving and ultimately redemptive story of the bonds the children make with one another, and of how the friendships forged at Windermere sustain them as they rebuild their lives in the UK.

The Goes Wrong Show

This week the gang turn their attentions to a period romance, a classic tale of family, duty and love across the class divide. A beautiful set has been built to replicate a grand country home, soon to be rocked by a literal and metaphorical storm. Sadly, the literal storm involves a water effect that threatens to flood the set - though that’s the least of their worries, as a horse turns out to be more of a danger to body parts than expected, gunshot effects occur seemingly at random and a ceiling fan threatens to decapitate a table of diners. Oh, and a cat gets stuck in a piano.

It’s the fourth week of The Voice 2020 and those coveted spots on each of the coaches teams are filling up fast. Both Olly Murs and will.i.am have four acts, only leaving six spaces in each of their teams. Meghan Trainor and Sir Tom Jones each have five acts and both are looking for the final five to complete their squads. Tonight, a bartender from Ireland serves up a killer performance but was it enough to impress the four superstar coaches? And a music-teacher takes her talent from the classroom to the stage, is her dream about to become a reality? Olly Murs also takes to the stage as he treats the audience and his fellow coaches to a spontaneous performance.

Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) volunteers to put up a group of trainee doctors at Nonnatus House while they undertake the practical aspect of their obstetrics diploma. Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) and Sister Julienne hope the exercise will remind the council how vital Nonnatus House is to the community, and help remove the threat of demolition. The young doctors - Benedict (Sam Woolf ), Kevin (Lee Armstrong), Nigel (Callum Sharp) and Will (Micky Dartford) - are to stay in Lucille (Leonie Elliott) and Nurse Crane’s (Linda Bassett) room while all the midwives cram in with Trixie (Helen George) and Valerie (Jennifer Kirby). There’s a lot of excitement about their arrival and the doctors don’t disappoint.

Young, Sikh And Proud Journalist Sunny Hundal (pictured) explores the legacy of his late brother Jagraj Singh, the most popular Sikh leader of modern Britain, who sparked an unprecedented revival of young people returning to the faith. Sunny and Jagraj fell out very publicly over their opposing religious views and didn’t speak for years. In Young, Sikh And Proud, Sunny explores what led to that schism and why they each had such different approaches to the faith. Sunny also asks whether what he sees as a rise in religious activism among a minority of young Sikhs, points towards a wider story of identity and belonging. On this journey Sunny meets people from all walks of the faith, including a young protester; one of the UK’s most senior Sikh policemen; and the leader of one of the country’s most outspoken Sikh youth organisations. In a bid to understand why his own brother became so religious Sunny also spends time with his family, and, for the first time, visits a Sikh camp. His brother, like hundreds of other young people, went to one of these camps to learn more about the faith. Through learning about his brother’s path to the religion, and by exploring his own identity, can Sunny understand more about what it means to be Sikh in modern Britain? Sunny says: “My brother was an extraordinary character, who went from a west London estate to the British Army, to being a religious leader. “I wanted to understand his journey. But in the process I learn much more than I expected.”

The Ultimate tribute! Ultimate Elton and The Rocket Band are much in demand at festivals and theatres throughout the world, thanks to a high standard of musicianship and professionalism, together with the irresistible songs of Elton John. Rapidly established as the foremost Elton John tribute act, Ultimate Elton and The Rocket Band presents an uncannily-accurate reproduction of the live shows of one of pop music’s most-successful and best-loved artists. Sir Elton John has become one of the most-successful singer/ songwriters of the past four decades, with his music loved by all generations. With global, record sales of over 250 million, Sir Elton has produced some of the most -recognisable

and best-loved popular music ever written. Add to this his amazing stage presence and personality, and it’s

easy to see why he remains one of the “must-see” performers touring today. Some tribute artists look

like their idol, some sound like their idol. Paul Bacon as Elton John does both! Close your eyes and you won’t believe your ears. Open your eyes and you won’t believe them, either! You simply won’t find a closer tribute to Sir Elton John. A lifelong Elton John fan, Paul first started singing and performing Elton’s songs whilst studying Performing Arts at University, in the early Eighties. With an extraordinarilysimilar singing voice to Sir Elton’s, Paul is able

to draw on an amazing back catalogue of hits, to produce a truly wonderful celebration of Elton’s music. Paul’s performances often feature some of Elton’s actual clothes, bought from his “Out the Closet” sales. Elton John’s extraordinary repertoire means that Ultimate Elton can serenade an audience over lunch or dinner, with some of the most beautiful ballads ever written, including Your Song, Candle in the Wind, Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, Sacri-

fice, and Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word. He can also change the pace and get people on the dance floor, with classics like Crocodile Rock, I’m Still Standing, The Bitch is Back, and Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting. Ultimate Elton’s challenge is often not what to play, but what to leave out! “It’s an absolute joy to perform so many wonderful songs,” said Paul, “and to share in the love and appreciation that audiences have towards Sir Elton and his music.”

What people say about Ultimate Elton, aka Paul Bacon:

“Hi Paul. Just wanted to say a big thank-you for the gig on Saturday at my party. You were sensational, and everyone was just amazed and enjoyed it all so much. Do say a big thank-you to the lads for me, for doing such a good job. They really are great musicians, and you all deserve a lot of praise and good fortune. Everyone loved you all, and are still raving about it all. Best wishes to you and the band. Love Sheila x” Sheila Farebrother (Elton’s Mum) “Blimey. He’s got it down. Band are great, too. How are his tantrums? Paul, you were “fantastic”. So good to meet you. Keep on rockin’!” Clive Franks, Elton John’s record producer and live sound engineer, for over 35 years. “Thank you so much for appearing at my golf classic. Knowing Elton John, I was amazed at your performance, and it really felt as though we were watching the real thing. You were so convincing, in every way. All my friends and guests were highly entertained. Your show really finished the night off for us. Congratulations, and, again, many thanks.” Russ Abbot.

Jay Francis, a tribute to George Michael - Europe’s number-one live show

You’ll have Faith in Jay JAY has been in the entertainment industry for over 30 years, and a George Michael fan since he was 10 years old. He has a wealth of experience, performing all over the world in hotels and holiday resorts, for Thompson, Sensatory Hotels and First Choice.

Jay was even lucky enough to perform in Ibiza, where the original video was made for Club Tropicana (Pikes Hotel), at a birthday party for a millionaire. He has also

performed on many cruise ships, and in corporate venues, throughout the UK. He actually met his idol in 1997, when he was tipped off that George was doing a secret interview in Newcastle. After gaining access to the private airfield, he waited at the point where the private jets arrived. Jay approached, timidly, and George (lighting a cigarette) recognised him as a fan, and beckoned him over. At the meeting, they talked about how Jay loved to sing George’s songs on stage, and George asked which of the songs worked the best, and wished him good luck.

Jay has travelled the world, watching George performing, and never had

to rehearse or study how he moved or sang. “I have listened and

watched him all my life,” says Jay, “a super-fan, if you like!”

Lobster is the way to go! LOBSTER is the only mobile network in Spain to offer a service completely in English. And, when they say everything in English, they really mean it!

The Lobster website, app, customer-billing information, and advertising, are all in English. And, perhaps most importantly, their customercontact-centre agents are all native English speakers. Lobster was launched in 2018, to meet the needs of British nationals, and other English speakers, residing in Spain, who weren’t getting the best deals or customer experience with their mobile network in Spain. The Lobster brand was created to establish an emotional bond with British values and service. The DNA of the company is “English, easy and effortless”. The Lobster offering is based on simplicity, and understanding that customers enjoy a service and experience “like at home”. This, together with a service completely in English, and tariff plans tailor-made for expatriates, has provided a winning formula that has appealed to over 10,000

happy Lobster customers, in just nine months after launching, and it is growing, rapidly. Lobster’s tariff plans are tailormade for British expatriates and other English speakers, who reside in Spain, and start from just €12 per month, VAT included. There are three, simple tariff plans, all with unlimited calls and texts in Spain, to the UK, and other countries. Also, great data deals cater for all types of customers, from light-to-heavy data users. So, whether you just send the odd WhatsApp, or are glued to YouTube videos all day, they have a tariff plan which is right for you! You just pay, month by month, with no commitments.

They want their customers to stay with them because they’re happy with the service! To sign up, all you need is valid ID, passport, NIE, or similar, and a credit or debit card. It doesn’t have to be a Spanish credit or debit card. You get your first month completely free, with no commitments, to try the service and see if you like it. You can keep your existing Spanish number if you already have one, or they can give you a brand new one. Signing up for the service can be done through any one of over 600 retail stores. Customers can easily find their closest store, by using the store finder on the Lobster website lobster.es. If customers prefer, they can also sign up online, or by calling the customer-contact centre, free of charge, on 1661. Give them a go! They have some great customer testimonials on their Facebook page. For example, Caroline Smith recommends Lobster, saying: “I changed over, recently. I get great coverage, the app is easy to use, and the call-centre staff are all very helpful.” Keith Beardsmore says: “Good service, good price, and well worth having!”

(they’re mostly human!) Tanya is the boss lady, and she’s been in the business hundreds of years! Before residing in Tenerife, she lived high in the hills of Tibet, where she was a very-successful alpaca farmer. Unfortunately, she was so successful, the alpacas formed their own society,

held elections, and voted to deport Tanya to the island of Tenerife. On arrival, T a n y a discovered it wasn’t suitable here for animal breeding, because of the terrain, so she settled on real-estate marketing, instead. She’s doing OK now, but misses the alpacas terribly, even after all this time. Denise is an Edinburgh lassie, now living the dream in Tenerife. Having previously worked for NASA, now she enjoys mingling with the stars. She likes to name-drop, and has the Shakira triplets on her friends list. (You know.... Shakira, Shakira, Shakira... like the song.) Unfortunately, she doesn’t often hang out with them, because she finds it difficult to tell them apart, which makes any conversations a tad awkward. Elsa is our French belle. Another smart cookie, she speaks at least 27 languages. We’re positive that clients call the office just to hear her accent. She previously worked with James Bond.

FRESHLY-SQUEEZED fruit juice does not lose vitamin content, even if it isn’t drunk immediately, says one of Spain’s leading consumer organisations, the OCU. In a review of orange juice, across the country’s major supermarkets, the organisation tested the Vitamin C content in each; the moment it was extracted, a few hours later, then again at intervals of 24, 48 and 72 hours. After this time, it is generally not suitable for drinking anyway, but the OCU says the levels of Vitamin C remained the same at every test. More and more Spanish supermarkets are offering a “squeezeyour-own” service, where locally and nationally-produced fresh oranges are piled into a giant machine. Customers take an empty bottle, normally available in different sizes, and pump the juice into it, themselves. It is an ideal option for those who do not have juicers at home, and is more popular than the varieties sold by the carton. In fact, an increasing number of Spanish residents are tending to drink fresh juice, rather than prepackaged. Some concerns have been raised among the public about the amount of additional, single-use plastic, this relatively-new system generates. As yet, no supermarket has a “return” service for empty bottles, and re-using these, after rinsing them out, is strongly discouraged by stores, even though it is technically possible, because the barcode reading applies to the product, not to individual bottles. Customers who use the “squeeze-your-own” machines are urged to

24th January - 30th January 2020

Squeezing your own is the best way to go re-use bottles for other purposes where they can, and, afterwards, deposit them in the “yellow bin”, where plastic, cartons, tins and cans are collected for recycling. The OCU studied 24 samples in three different branches of each of the eight supermarkets it reviewed; Mercadona, Carrefour, Alcampo, Hípercor, Lidl, Aldi, Día and Ahorramás. Its first study addressed what turned out to be unfounded concerns among some consumers, whether the “squeeze-your-own” machines were hygienic. The organisation says the hygiene quality of juices depends upon how often the machines are cleaned, but stressed it did not find any risk in any of the juices or squeezers, and considers the product to be very safe. Although the OCU recommends freshlysqueezed juices are consumed within 24 hours, and kept in the fridge during this time, it all depends upon how clean the machines are. When the juice is pressed from a supermarket machine in store, it is perfectly safe to drink within 48 hours, even though anecdotal evidence points to its being fresh enough to do so, for longer. All supermarkets reviewed cleaned their machines thoroughly, at least once a day, normally just before closing time. In fact, those who want to add

a bottle of hand-pressed juice to their shopping basket, should normally aim to get there at least an hour before their local branch shuts, to be sure the machine is still in use. The OCU reviewed pric-

es, but did not find any difference in quality between stores. In fact, the oranges used are practically all grown in the Comunidad Valenciana in the east of Spain, one of Europe’s largest orange-producing are-

as, and one which supplies most of the supermarkets in the UK. The cheapest half-litre bottle is from Alcampo, at €1.75, followed by Carrefour, Día, and Lidl, at €1.79. Mercadona, Aldi, Ahorramás and Hípercor were the most expensive for a half-litre bottle, at €2.25. But it works out cheaper to buy a litre. These range from €2.89 to €2.99, lower in price during peak orange season, from about November to February, and

higher in price, when they are more scarce. Although considerably more expensive than a litre carton of orange juice from concentrate, the in-store “squeezeyour-own” option is still good value for money. The machines filter out the “bits”, meaning that, for every 100ml of juice, a whole large orange is used, and buying the fruit to squeeze at home works out about the same price per orange, as hand-pressing them in a supermarket.

Syrup is sweet taste of danger HIGH fructose corn syrup is a manmade product that is produced by using enzymes, to extract sugar from stocks of corn.

This sweetener should be avoided, as it has been linked to a variety of maladies including obesity, cardiovascular disease, bloodsugar imbalances, diabetes, fatty liver, liver failure, leaky gut syndrome, decaying teeth, hypertension, immune suppression, dementia and cancer. Big Food loves high fructose

corn syrup because it is both cheaper and sweeter than cane sugar. Highly-refined cane sugar is bad enough, but high fructose corn syrup delivers a fix that rapidly enters the blood stream, causing blood-sugar spikes and the quick release of insulin. This, in turn, causes an increase in appetite, and a trend toward weight gain and obesity, over time. The easiest way to avoid this syrup is to stop drinking sodas and sugary drinks. This does not mean drinking diet/sugarfree sodas, because they contain aspartame, or other toxic artificial sweeteners. Normally it is best not “drink your calories”, but, as an

occasional treat, there are drinks out there that don’t contain high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners. As consumers have become more educated to the dangers of high fructose corn syrup, some in the food

industry have resorted to changing the name that appears on the food label. If you see fructose or HFCS-90, move on to the next product, as these both indicate high fructose corn syrup. The fact that they are, in

effect, hiding this ingredient, tells you everything you need to know. Other foods that contain high fructose corn syrup include sweets, frozen deserts, candied fruits, breads, crackers, granola bars, yogurt, cereal and ice cream, and condiments and sauces (i.e. ketchup and barbecue sauce). Other surprising foods that may contain this sweetener are peanut butter, deli meat, oatmeal, apple sauce, miracle whip, canned soups, canned tomatoes and even cottage cheese. This underscores the importance of reading food labels - know what goes in your body!

Keep your address up to date

By Emma

from Motorworld

MOST people will be completely unaware that if they do not keep the authorities up to date with their details, and this includes Tráfico, they will be unlikely to receive any fine (multa/notificación) notifications. The correspondence may be from the social office, Hacienda or Tráfico. For example, it could be a speeding or parking fine, either caught by a speed camera (of which many are unaware they are there), or a fine for parking where it is prohibited, perhaps outside

a Vado sign, or in a Carga/ Descarga area, not during the permitted hours. Often, someone only becomes aware of this when an embargo is put on their bank account. At this stage, it is often hard to challenge the fine. To avoid this, and any potential traffic and carrelated fines, it is imperative that you inform Tráfico of any changes of address. During this period of exchanging licences, because of Brexit, most people have a Residencia with an address that is, more often than not, out of date, Perhaps they have moved three or four times since the original address on the Residencia! The Tráfico system works in a peculiar way, in so much as the address that they hold on record for your driver’s licence, is the one that supersedes any for a car registered to you, perhaps sometime after. So, when you move you should make a list of all people to be notified of your new address, and this should

include Seguridad Social, Hacienda and Tráfico. Some departments allow this to be done online, with a digital certificate, but obtaining that can sometimes be fraught with problems, too! So, in this period of uncertainty, regarding Brexit,

please take a moment to think and check. When was the last time you updated your address? The answer to that one, for most people, is probably never! It is a little more difficult to check, because the car’s Permiso de Circulacion and

your Spanish Driver’s licence do not display the address used at the time of obtaining them. This is largely because of Data protection Laws. Motorworld can help, if you need to update your address on your driver’s licence or car documents.

The magnificent seven!

By Val Sainsbury FOOD is for important for maintaining your daily health. The vitamins and minerals found in food are crucial for the proper functioning of your body, and every system it contains.

It has been proven, time and again, that the type of food you consume has a direct impact on your total body health. Adding the right fuel to other healthy lifestyle choices, such as regular exercise and plenty of water, will increase your chances of living longer

and stronger years. Your food as medicine New studies, focused on the benefits of using food as medicine, have made fascinating discoveries, in the last decade. The results from prestigious labs all over the world show us that not only can you improve your general health to prevent disease, you can actively fight disease with food. There are specific cancer-fighting foods that you can start adding to your diet today. There are natural foods available, that target and destroy cancer cells, and cancer-causing cells. Top seven cancerfighting foods *Raw Garlic *Cruciferous Vegetables *Green Tea *Berries *Leafy Greens *Cooked Tomatoes *Carrots Raw Garlic

Along with the other relatives in the allium family, such as onions, leeks, and shallots, garlic contains powerful antioxidants like allicin, proven to remove free radicals from your body. It also boosts immunity, is nutrient-dense, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol levels, improves brain function, and is a natural detoxifier. Chop or crush garlic, allow to rest, then use it raw or in your favourite recipes. Broccoli Known as a cruciferous vegetable, related to kale, cauliflower, and cabbage, broccoli is high in phytochemicals and the antioxidants glucoraphanin and indole-3-carbinol, which have been proven to reduce the risk of cervical, breast, gastric and prostate cancers. Naturally anti-inflammatory, good for your bones

and heart, and nutrient dense (without the calories), broccoli is a great addition to a healthy eating plan. Since phytochemicals are heat-sensitive enzymes, the benefits of broccoli are best raw or blanched. Green Tea The catechins found in green tea have made it a superstar in the cancerfighting food research. They are believed to be more powerful than Vitamin C, in fighting freeradical damage. This delicious beverage has been shown to shrink existing tumours, and inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Many experts suggest green tea daily, as a natural cancer preventative. As an added benefit, it also reduces your risk of heart disease, and lowers your blood pressure. Strawberries Researchers found that strawberries slow down the growth of cancer cells, protect your body from heart disease, lower inflammation, prevent memory loss, and help you burn your body’s fat stores. Strawberries and other dark-coloured berries, such as black raspberries, blueberries and goji berries, are

packed with flavour. Spinach Though this leafy green is low in calories, it offers incredible health benefits, with vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids that your body needs to stay strong. It contains bio-chemicals called flavonoids that soak up damaging free radicals, and flushes them out. Particularly rich in folate and fibre, two elements that doctors believe are essential to cancer prevention, make spinach one of our favourite cancer-fighting foods. Tomatoes Lycopene is the antioxidant that causes the red colour of tomatoes, and prevents the formation of certain cancers. Tomatoes also lower your risk of heart disease, and are naturally anti-inflammatory. Lycopene is released when tomatoes are cooked. Carrots This well-loved vegetable is a wonderful source of beta-carotene, an antioxidant that aids in preventing cell damage, and may slow the growth of cancer cells. They’re good for your vision and skin, and are a natural detoxifier, as well.

CD Tenerife TENERIFE coach Rubén Baraja continued to surprise people with his selection, ahead of last Sunday’s visit of Girona to the Heliodoro. He stuck with Dani Hernández in goal, even though Ortolá has recovered from his hand injury, and opted for Nahuel over Elliot, and Carlos Ruiz in the centre of defence, leaving out Moore. One thing to keep in mind is that three of the four most expensive players in the squad didn’t make the starting X1; Naranjo, Malbasic and Mauro Dos Santos, as well as the injured Borja Lasso. Tenerife, under Baraja, have started quickly in recent games, and this was no exception. In the sixth minute, an alert Nahuel intercepted a Girona pass in the middle of the field, and went on a brilliant solo run into the opposition’s area. After beating two players, his left-foot shot, from 20 yards across goal, gave keeper Riesgo no chance. This was the perfect start for CDT, who found themselves ahead after a moment of brilliance from the 23-year-old midfielder. Girona didn’t have their first real chance until the 19th minute, when former Middlesbrough forward Stuani broke

towards Dani’s goal. He would have certainly equalised had Alberto not dispossessed him, miraculously, to save his side. Five minutes later, Tenerife were forced to make a change when Nahuel suffered a muscle injury, Baraja bringing on Elliot. Girona’s next chance

came from nothing, after a foul just inside Tenerife’s half. The Catalans floated an excellent 35-yard free-kick into the box, which was heading dangerously towards Dani’s goal. But Diamanka couldn’t connect properly at the far post, and Tenerife were still leading after half-an-hour. But neither side threatened during the remainder of the 45 minutes. The second half started with another change to the blue-and-white ranks, as Jorge made way for Undabarrena, which forced a slight formation shuffle. But Girona came out a

different team, taking the game to Tenerife and forcing them on the back foot. Marti’s men had several dangerous attacks, but they just couldn’t find that killer ball. Yet Tenerife found themselves facing a superior Girona side, and a referee who seemed inclined, always, to whistle in favour of the Catalan team. Borja Garcia had a freekick from 20 yards out, which Dani tipped over the bar, and Diamanka had a chance in front of goal that was well saved. Soriano then went just wide with a vicious, left-foot volley, as they

bombarded Tenerife, who remained resilient and defended well. In fact, the home side created their own chance in the 77th minute, when Suso was played through on the right. But the Tenerife captain had a lack of options and his shot hit the side-netting. For the last 10 minutes, Tenerife continued to frustrate Girona, trying desperately not to fall at the last hurdle with any silly mistakes, which they had done in the past. On this occasion they managed it, to give

Baraja his third victory of 2020 and three more valuable points, which left them 17th in the league and out of the relegation zone. The most impressive feature of their performance was the desire and togetherness of the players. Their individual ability has never been doubted, but Baraja now has them playing as a team. They will certainly need all this for their next league game, on Sunday, away to bitter Las Palmas rivals. It’s derby day. Vamos tete!

Scottish brothers have cracked world records

A TRIO of brothers from Scotland have smashed three world records, after rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in 35 days. Ewan, 27, Jamie, 26, and 21-year-old Lachlan MacLean, known as BROAR, a combination of brother and oar, set off from La Gomera on 12th December, completing their 3,000mile mission to Antigua in the Caribbean last Thursday. They completed their arduous journey in 35 days, nine hours and nine minutes, smashing several world records. The trio are the first three brothers to row any ocean, the fastest trio to row across the Atlantic, and the youngest trio to row across the Atlantic, which has been confirmed on Facebook by Atlantic Campaigns, adding that the siblings crossed the finishing line playing the bagpipes. Previously, the record for a trio rowing the Atlantic Ocean was 41 days, reports the Press Association. The Talisker Whisky Challenge, branded “the world’s toughest rowing race”, is an annual ocean event, which sees as many as 30 teams cross the Atlantic. The siblings, from Edinburgh, are raising money for national children’s charity Children 1st, and Feedback Madagascar, a development organisation, which focuses on health, sanitation and agriculture.

Nandu Rugby

Luc and Daddy so Cool IT’S Week 21, and the relentless Pas O Nadas A march on, with 180s for Luc and Daddy Cool, both in the same leg of doubles.

Quite why it took them another nine darts to win the leg is anyone’s guess. But, at 5-0 from the singles, I don’t suppose they were under much pressure to rush it, and 15 darts for a game of doubles is hardly sloppy. Anyway, they were generous enough to let Scooters&Chevys A have the trebles’ game, so it finished 7-1. Ourplace Playboys found themselves in a similar position at 5-0 down to Gaffers#Teamhollywood. They then took the first doubles game, but that’s as far as the fightback went, though, and they also lost 7-1. The Pub v Mad Hatters was bound to be a closer game, so I’ll let John Mcwhirter tell you what happened: “The Pub 4 The Madhatter 4. What an absolutely belting night with Grizzly and crew; good darts, good company and great banter. “The Pub won the singles 3-2, the doubles finished 1-1, and the trebles went to the Hatter. Harvey, of the Hatter, had a 180, and Ally from The Pub had an excellent 161 check-out. Thanks to all for a brilliant night.” Pas O Nadas Int didn’t want to be outdone by their stablemates,

and they took the first four singles without losing a leg, against The Loch Inn Bullseyes. But Tommy was having none of it, and he took the last singles game. A draw was now possible, but the resistance was over, and another 7-1 followed. Suters 20;30 Crew v Sandys Bookie Boys, we have a quote from Edward, I think it’s his first, so only fair to use it: “Suters 6-2 Bookie Boys. Trebles to Suters. Taylor (fat boy) 125 out. Great to catch up with some old friends. Oh, and Jamie wants a mention of his 41 check-out. “Chucked the 1st dart out the board, to then go 1 double top.” Of course, what we don’t know, is whether that first dart was deliberate. Sandys Bandits v Waterfall rounds up Division 1, and although there were some close games, the home team ran out 6-2 winners.

division 1 ResultS

In Division 2, we start with The Club House v Sundowners. The sun went down on Sundowners I’m afraid, and it doesn’t get much tougher. They lost all 15 legs, and, of course., the match 8-0. Marilyns v Naughty Nautas was a much closer affair, and a “fantastic evening”, by all accounts, so they were probably both quite happy with the 4-4 scoreline. Clouseau’s were at home to the Palms Sports Bar, and, apparently it was a “great night”. And, no doubt, again, both teams were happy with the 4-4 draw. Pas O Nadas were away to Ourplace Breakaways, and they couldn’t make it 3 out of 3 for the El Ritual teams, could they? In a word, Yes! The win wasn’t as emphatic as their stablemates, because they needed the trebles to seal a 5-3 win. Pink Elephant did what they do. I don’t have any details other than: “Pink Elephant won some games, and the visiting Emerald lounge didn’t, so another 8-0! Scooters&Chevys B were set to play Club Activo, but, unfortunately, they didn’t update their captain’s book, and it seems that nobody on their team realised they had to play. So, because Club Activo turned up, and the home team didn’t, an 8-0 result was awarded. It was such a shame. Activo were late entries to the league, which is why their fixtures are not listed. But every team in the division had already played them at least once, without a hitch … including Scooters!

When rugby attracts tears, and its huge family again!

THE “rugby family” comes together again, and people around the world, who are involved in rugby in some capacity, class themselves as part of this family! It is extremely unique, and here in Tenerife last Saturday, it demonstrated just why. Firstly, Nandu’s senior coach, Trish, saw her side play CRULL in a hard-fought encounter in Adeje. This was her last game before a short sabbatical, because she is returning to the UK for medical treatment. Both sides showed their appreciation and respect, as they walked her through their respective tunnels at the half-time break. Watching 18-stone men cry was evidence of the admiration that Nandu and the rugby community here has for this little lady. To follow this, after the final whistle, both teams suddenly continued playing, but went in to “slowmotion” for a game of “less-contact” rugby. This was to support the CRULL players, who have difficulties playing the full contact version. The ball arrived smartly, out on the wing after a few minutes, to their young man, who skipped a few tackles and accelerated to the try line, with Nandu players diving at his feet! He was mobbed by his team-mates after scoring his try, and he was also applauded by Nandu players and the watching crowd. It was a beautiful, touching moment, and something that he and many of us will cherish for a long time. Both of the above show the respect and togetherness that rugby instils. Everyone had forgotten about the game’s score …rugby was the winner!
