By 2016, the authorities want to reduce dramatically the number of cars over the age of seven years on the roads throughout Spain - including the Canary Islands, among other regions - by launching tougher controls, including a “repair history record” of all vehicles registered in Spain.

Few details have been revealed about its devastating plan, although the DGT maintains that around 50% of vehicles currently being driven around are

aged 9½ years or over.

And even though many of them are deemed completely legal now - sailing through the ITV test annually - the authority intends to reduce the average age to a maximum of seven years by 2016 through increasingly stringent controls.

This will come as a dreadful shock to many owners, who keep their cars in roadworthy condition because they simply cannot afford to spend thousands on updating them - or because they are happy with them anyway. At

present, one in three cars sold in Spain is over 10 years old, which is a major concern for

road safety. In the first three months of this year, used-car sales have increased by 8.9%,

which equates to 558,000 vehicles sold, compared with the same period in 2012.

That’s more than double the number of new vehicles sold.

Maria Segui, Director of the DGT, expressed her concern over the safety of ageing cars, saying that age can “make the difference between life and death”.

By coincidence, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has pledged to invest one billion euros in Spain’s car industry over the coming weeks.

Despite the ongoing economic woes and

soaring unemployment, a total of 5bn euros has already been invested in the car industry in just over a year.

Rajoy made the announcement at a lunch for car company executives ahead of the Barcelona International Motor Show, which began last Saturday and finishes on Sunday.

The Prime Minister added that 12% of the country’s workforce was employed directly or indirectly in the auto sector, and that most of the jobs were highly skilled.

Fugitive Moran captured in Spain Crimestoppers and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) have confirmed that it has achieved its 50th arrest from its Operation Captura campaign after Andrew Moran was arrested in Spain.

He was wanted for for an aggravated robbery that took place eight years ago.

Moran, 31, was convicted in his absence for his involvement in an armed cash in transit robbery that took place on the 23rd May 2005 in Colne, Lancashire, where Royal Mail guards were threatened with a handgun, machete and a baseball bat.

One of the guards was assaulted before the offenders escaped with £25,000.

The trial for this offence took place on February 2nd 2009. In the judges summing up he stated that he intended to remand Moran in custody, at which point, he assaulted a security guard and vaulted over the dock. He escaped from the court and was subsequently convicted in his absence. The 31-year-old, from Salford, Manchester, was arrested in Alicante

last Friday (10th May).

Operation Captura is the successful multiagency campaign that identifies serious criminals believed to be on the run in Spain.

Operation Captura has made seven separate appeals since Operation Captura was launched back in 2006, with 50 of the 65 individuals arrested by

law enforcement across Europe. Moran featured on the latest Captura appeal that launched in October 2011 when ten wanted individuals were released to the British and Spanish public.

Matt Burton, SOCA’s Head of Investigations, said: “Moran thought he could evade capture fleeing to Spain, frequently changing his

appearance and using false identities. Like his partner in crime Devalda and the other armed robbers on the hit-list discovered though, there’s no hiding place. SOCA and its partners have the capability to pursue criminals relentlessly, track them down, and put them behind bars.

News In Brief Woman hit by falling rocks

A 60-YEAR-OLD woman suffered a broken leg on Wednesday morning after being hit by falling rocks on a Los Cristianos beach.

The emergency services were called and the woman was finally rescued by fire crews. She was transferred to Hospiten South.

The 18-carrot drugs haul!

FRENCH police have seized more than two tonnes of cannabis, worth around 10m euros (£844,7530) on the street. They were hidden in a shipment of carrots, originating from Spain.

Customs police said yesterday (Thursday) that they had uncovered the haul after stopping a truck on a highway near Tours, in central France.

Sniffer dogs discovered the drugs hidden among the boxes of carrots.

Adeje summer school

THE 21st annual Adeje Summer University will take place between 15th-19th July.

Buenavista up for sale

THE Tenerife Cabildo has advertised on its website that it is selling its share in the publicly-owned Buenavista golf course.

The tender amounts to 18,376,509 euros, taxes excluded, which corresponds to 10,313,347 shares held by the Cabildo Insular and 8,063,162 euros for Gestur Tenerife property titles. Finance Minister Victor Perez said: “It’s the most appropriate action in the interests of the Cabildo.”

He added that the decision formed part of the plan for the restructuring of the public sector, reducing in size and making it more cost effective in the current climate.

Infanta Cristina won’t testify

HUNDREDS of people plan to demonstrate next Saturday in Madrid because the Infanta Cristina has again been told she will not have to testify in the infamous Nóos case, for which her husband, Iñaki Urdangarín, is facing trial.

The eldest daughter of Spain’s King and Queen was called up twice on suspicion of being involved in the money-laundering and fraud racket in which Urdangarín and his co-director Diego Torres were alleged to have used the Nóos Institute as a front.

But on both occasions, she has been let off. The prosecution service said there was no evidence to show that she had committed any criminal offence, claiming she was being discriminated against, or used as a public example, because of her status. Yet protesters from the Anticorruption League believe that it is precisely because of her status as Infanta and Duchess of Palma that she is no longer facing trial.

Expat kids right at home in Spain ALMOST half of Expats’ children in Spain – not including Brits or Irish - “feel Spanish”, but only after an awkward integration process.

Research by Princetown University and the University College of Ortega y Gasset determined that they are more at home than ever, once the uncertainty ends and new friends are made.

The information and the figures relate mostly to non-EU citizens, or those from newly-joined member States such as Bulgaria and Romania.

There is hardly any data concerning British, Irish or other northern European expatriates and their children.

The study, which focused on kids born in Spain to foreign parents, or those who

moved to Spain with their parents before they reached the age of 12, found that 48.3% do not consider themselves to be closer to the nationality of their family of origin.

This figure has made a huge leap in the last four years, with 28.7% admitting similar sentiments at the end of 2008.

The case study found a significant difference between children born in Spain to foreign parents - where 80% feel Spanish - and those who moved to the country at an early age.

But half of them say the majority of their friends have Spanish parents, particularly those children born into families from Argentina, Venezuela and Chile.

Philippine and Bulgarian children are the most integrated, but Bolivian and Chinese kids less so.

Only 10% of the total, across nationalities, believe they have been dis-

criminated against for being foreign.

And just 2% have left Spain since reaching adulthood, despite the parents returning to their native country.

Of those children born in Spain in the Nineties to foreign parents, or who moved there when younger than 12, one-third are just finishing compulsory schooling, 45% are working on their Bachillerato (Spain’s A-levels) or equivalent-level professional or vocational qualifications, and 5% have made it through to university.

Although almost the same number of secondgeneration immigrants as native Spanish youngsters hope to go to university -68% and 71% respectively - only 57% of foreign teenagers anticipate doing so.

Generally, Expat children were found to be worse off financially than natives.

Two-thirds of families

have a monthly net income of under 1,500 euros, and the remainder netted less than 1,000 euros.

But only a quarter of Spanish children live in households where the total monthly income did not exceed 1,500 euros.

There was little difference found in unemployment statistics between second-generation foreigners and their Spanish counterparts of the same age, with 16% and 14% respectively being jobless.

The research compilers say this data is “very positive” and that the high level of integration is largely through the native Spanish population being “extremely welcoming”.

But they warn that the trend could be reversed in future years because the funding aimed at helping foreigners become part of mainstream society is shrinking constantly.

Cautiously optimistic Tourism Minister Carlos Alonso is "cautiously optimistic" about the number of travellers visiting Tenerife this summer.

Tenerife showcased its tourist offer during the recent Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament, held in the capital of Spain.

Both the Minister of Tourism of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, and the CEO of Turismo de Tenerife, Miguel Angel Santos, commented that the event was “very positive.”

Tenerife Tourism conducted a dozen presentations of the Island’s attractions to more than 100 travel agents, airlines, tour operators and press, as well as the business opportunities to potential investors.

“The trends we have noted from tour opera-

tors make us cautiously optimistic ahead of the arrival of domestic travellers for the next summer season,” explained Carlos Alonso, who recalls that “Tenerife has been the only tourist destination present in this event.”

Miguel Angel Santos, meanwhile, noted that “for the second consecutive year, the action in this tournament has allowed us to strengthen relationships with the

tourism industry and confirm the commitment of the tour operators and travel agents to Tenerife, and we’ve enhanced the image of the island as a holiday destination among major media of the country."

During the presentations attended by the tour operators, emphasis was placed on issues such as the nature of the island and its volcanic nature, the wide va-

riety of activities for the traveller, offering finest and luxury facilities in Tenerife with possibilities to host conferences, among others.

Over 200,000 people attended the tournament, which broadcast on TV to approximately 15 million people. The Spanish market is second in importance to the Island with 1,185,000 visitors received in 2012 and a market share of 24%.

Sail Fisher sinks

Experienced game charter fishing boat Sail Fisher got into major difficulties on Wednesday morning after landed a blue marlin weighing over half a ton.

Fishing approximately three miles off Punta Rasca, Palm Mar, the Captain and two Russian clients had to be rescued by nearby boat Dotsy Too, after making a distress call.

The boat, which specialises in big-game fishing, began to sink as it could not cope with the size of its haul; the

rear hatch was left open and the boat began to take on water. No one was injured during the incident and the

individuals were safely transferred to their base in Puerto Colon. As to the fate of the Marlin that is not clear.

The Jungle Park looks after the welfare of animals in a constant effort to offer them an environment as

close to their natural habitat as possible and it works closely with the European Breeding Programme.

Along with the new attraction, there is also the existing rope-walk – where it’s possible to walk through part of the park on fun ropes, bridges, passages and tunnels.

The good Samaritan

This week I just have to share this heart-warming story with you as it just restores your faith in humans.

At a time when financially many are struggling and a handful of individuals really will not go out of their way to help anyone the selfless act I’m about to describe is really lovely.

On a Wednesday in May, Mr P (as we’ll refer to him) was dropping a friend at Tenerife South Airport; outside of departures he finds a purse containing personal items, a nationwide bank card and a large amount of cash.

He makes enquiries inside the airport - no joy. He telephones the Nationwide in the UK – no joy – being told, it’s not company policy to contact our customers.

He tried various other avenues to reunite the purse with Mrs B, from, as it turns out, Surrey, but to no avail.

He contacted us here at the Canarian Weekly office and for three

days we had the same – no joy. Until that is the Head of PR and Communications for Monarch Airlines went that extra mile.

On that particular Wednesday evening in May there were only two flights, so it was either a BA or a Monarch arrival or departure, four flights.

As it so happens Mrs B was on a departure passenger list with contact details of the person who made the booking as they’d booked extra leg-room seats.

Due to data protection Monarch had to put them in touch with us.

Since then an elated Mrs B has been in touch with Mr P and will collect her purse and contents on her next trip to Tenerife.

The recently widowed pensioner was ecstatic that an individual had gone to so much trouble to locate her.

So Mr P and Monarch thank you – joy!

The challenge facing the EU The President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, received Portuguese Prime Minister, Pedro Passos Coelho, at Moncloa Palace for the 26th S p a i n - Po r t u g a l Summit, the second such summit to be held since the two leaders took office.

At a joint press conference, the President of the Government explained that the meeting had focused on the agenda of reforms and fiscal consolidation that the two countries are implementing so as to return to the path of growth and job creation.

The President of the Government believes it essential that the European Union adopts measures to accompany national efforts aimed at speeding up their positive effects. In this regard, he said that the schedule agreed by the European Council on banking union must be followed. “Banking union is the EU credibility test. Adopting measures to ensure credit reaches families and SMEs and to tackle the serious youth unemployment problem is a pressing issue at both a Europe-wide and Member State level”, he said.

In his opinion, banking union can only bring advantages. “There is no doubt in my mind about banking union or about everyone’s desire to achieve it. None of the twenty-seven Member States has a different opinion”.

As regards employment issues, the President of the Government stressed that any initiative in support of jobs for young people will receive his support.

He recalled that the Financial Perspectives for the period 2014-2020 contain a heading of 6 billion euros for the promotion of jobs for young

people. Mariano Rajoy also announced that the Governments of Spain and Portugal will intensify efforts to ensure the European Union adopts new measures over the coming months. “Being able to soon deploy the youth unemployment fund, the new cohesion funds and the funds aimed at the Common Agricultural Policy is a priority”.

Furthermore, the President of the Government said he is very pleased with the progress achieved by the labour reform approved in Spain and has no intention of changing it because it has been “highly positive, has increased flexibility in the economy and has enhanced our competitiveness”.

As regards SMEs, he mentioned the aid from the European Investment Bank and the an-

nouncement from the President of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, regarding support for this initiative.

Mariano Rajoy stressed his agreement with Pedro Passos Coelho regarding the fact that the European Union “can and must do more” to demonstrate the same effort as its Member States on ensuring the stability of the Eurozone. “There is no time to lose. The next few months will be very important for consolidating positions and joining forces”, he added.

He believes that the crisis has revealed flaws in the design of the single currency and doubts over its viability, meaning that Member States must send out a very clear message. “The Euro will not fail; Member States will emerge

stronger from this crisis and Europe will remain our framework of wellbeing and shared prosperity”.

The President of the Government stressed that Spain and Portugal are two neighbouring friends and allies that share the same values of stability, democracy and freedom, and are proud of their deeprooted pro-European sentiment.

The President of the Government believes that the sectoral meetings held by the members of both governments enabled relations and cooperation on various issues to be strengthened, as reflected in the joint statement.

Mariano Rajoy also said that both Spain and Portugal are pleased by the organisation of a parallel meeting of business leaders.

Reforestation The Cabildo is instigating a project to restore areas affected by the fires last summer on the Island.

This project is part of the employment creation plan; it includes trail restoration work, defence against erosion and work in areas affected by fires last summer, in the southwest of Tenerife. The project is co-financed up to 80% by the Euro-

pean Social Fund.

Councillor for the Environment, Ana Lupe Mora, said that the implementation of these works has meant hiring workers from different classes: agricultural engineers, foremen, farm labourers, nursery workers, admin officers and technical officers.

The work has been split into three phases, the first focusing on the infrastructure, the second is defending against erosion and the final phase relates to the vegetation. There

Spaniards flood into the UK SPAIN’S economic crisis has not been blamed for the enormous exodus of natives to the UK in the past decade.

The number of Spaniards emigrating to Britain has actually trebled, according to recent studies.

Around 11,000 moved to Britain in 2002, compared with 30,000 in 2011, according to Amparo González, head of the High Council for Scientific Investigations (CSIC).

González, a sociology expert, says the number of Spanish people who received their first National Insurance numbers in the UK to enable them to work went up by 6,000 between 2010 and 2011.

This, she maintained, shows an “evident”

impact caused by the Spanish recession.

But she stressed that moving abroad was “a costly and risky exercise”.

It required resources such as a human support network, sound knowledge of the English language, enough money to get settled until they find stable work and get their first pay packet, and no financial or family ties in Spain.

Research shows that the typical profile of a Spanish migrant to the UK is aged 35-44 with high qualifications and is financially comfortable, He or she has plenty of information, and usually has a job offer in the shape of a promotion already.

And there are as many men as women moving to Britain to work.

“Put another way, people who have been

unemployed for two years or more, for example, are less likely to leave Spain because they generally do not have the personal or family resources to do so,” said González.

“The current level of Spanish migrants is a new situation, but is largely because those who do so are much more highly-qualified than those who moved abroad in the 1960s or 1970s.

“And they tend to aim for countries where the move goes much more smoothly, thanks to the rights every EU citizen has in any of the other member states.

“The likelihood of their returning to Spain in the future is difficult to assess, but the Spanish Government’s refusal to recognise that emigration is rising rapidly is worrying.”

According to the Census of Spaniards Resident Abroad (CERA), 176,770 people have moved to another country in the last five years, but this is almost certainly just a fraction of the true figure.

But González said: “Only a minority of those who leave Spain register as residents with the Spanish Consulate in their new countries and, of the few who do, wait for several years until they are already established there.

“To this end the figures we have help us to detect emigration trends, at best, but they will never allow us to assess the true magnitude of the exodus of Spaniards.”

Hall, they worked really hard to get the dogs out.

Sadly, the elder one could not be saved but the two, who were much younger, were brought out alive.

Live Arico were called in to assist, and found the dogs were microchipped. Not only that, but their owner had told police that they had escaped from his property. All the details were on file, and we were able to return the dogs home safely.

THE Foreign Office has produced a list of the most bizarre requests to British posts abroad.

And some of the demands made should put a smile on your face – or cause you to shake your head in disbelief.

Silencing a noisy cockerel, supplying Olympic tickets and providing contact details for Sir Paul McCartney’s wife were among the most unusual requests to British posts abroad in 2012/13, according to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

Over the last year, the FCO handled

more than one million consular enquiries and supported some 52,135 British nationals in difficulty abroad.

However, the consular staff overseas continue to receive a number of inquiries for which they simply cannot provide assistance, and here are just some of them. *A man who required hospital treatment in Cambodia when a monkey dislodged a stone that hit him demanded help to get compensation. He also and wanted assurance that it would not happen again. *A man asked FCO staff in Rome to translate a phrase for a tattoo that he wanted.

“Consular staff in Beijing were asked to help a woman who had bought a pair of football boots which were “Made in China” but were of poor quality. *A woman requested that consular staff in Tel Aviv order her husband to get fit and eat healthily so that they could have children. *Consular staff in Kuala Lumpur were asked if the FCO could help pay to send their children to an International School. *A man asked consular staff in Stockholm to check the credentials of a woman he had met online. *A man asked the Consulate in Montreal for information to settle a £1,000 wager on the colour of the British passport. *A number of our staff across the world have been asked for the best place “to watch the football”. *A number of British Consulates have been asked to book hotels, or to advise on “where to watch the football”.

The FCO set up a Malaga contact centre in February 2011 to handle the volume of non-consular enquiries received by British Embassies and Consulates in Southern Europe.

Since its launch, staff have handled 131,211 calls, 39% of which have been lifestyle enquiries.

Steve Jones, head of the Contact Centre, said: “Our aim is to help staff at posts

concentrate on what is important. “But some of the inquiries we received from British nationals last year were bizarre, to say the least.

“For example, one customer contacted us to ask if we could provide the name of the watch the Royal Navy sailors wore between the years 1942-1955.

“While we couldn’t help with the watch information, FCO consular staff in Southern Europe were able to provide assistance to a single mother of three young children, who was suddenly hospitalised after a bout of sickness.

“And we also helped a family of four injured in a road traffic accident.”

The examples listed indicate that some people do not know how the FCO can (and cannot) help Brits abroad. Recent research shows that 78% of people wrongly think the FCO could get them out of jail if arrested.

And nearly half of 16-24 year-olds do not know what an Embassy or Consulate does.

Large variations in student workload a cause for concern The 2013 Student Academic Experience survey reveals large variations in the total workload for students with some working less than half the hours of other students.

Produced jointly by Which? and the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI), the 2013 Student Academic Experience survey, reveals students at some universities study for an average of just 20 hours a week in some subjects, whereas others are working for 40 hours or more. The total student workload averages 30 hours a week – 25% less than official guidelines – raising questions over standards and whether students are being pushed hard enough.

revealed in earlier surveys in the amount and type of contact time students are receiving.

Some students receive as much as double the amount of contact hours compared to students studying the same subject at other institutions with, for example, contact time for students studying mathematics varying between 13 and 22 hours. In many cases those with low contact hours compensate for this with more private study – in some they do not.

Students receiving up to nine contact hours a week are three times more likely to say they don’t think their course is value for money (30%), compared to those receiving between 15 and 24 hours a week (10%). The majority nevertheless thought that their course did represent value for money and were satisfied with the

amount of contact they received.

Since the first HEPI Student Academic Experience survey in 2006, contact hours have risen by only 20 minutes per week to an average of 14 hours across all institutions.

Over the same period there has been a nine-fold increase in tuition fees at English Institutions.

Three in ten (29%) first year students at English universities now say they don’t think their course offers value for money.

Nearly nine in ten (87%) surveyed said their course was good quality, yet over half (58%) told us their course had been worse than expected in some respects.

A third of students (32%) said they might have chosen a different course if they had known more about the academic experience, with a fifth of students (21%) saying that information from

universities was vague and one in ten (9%) that it was misleading.

Other key findings in the 2013 Student Academic Experience survey include: · There has been an increase in the amount of private study students put in – from an average of 12 hours 48 minutes in 2006 to 14 hours and eight minutes in 2013; · Small group teaching is important to students – two thirds (65%) say they gain a lot from learning in groups of up to five students; and · Students at Russell Group universities and specialist institutions received more contact in small groups; however small group teaching was more likely to be led by non-academic staff, whereas at newer, post92 universities it was more likely to be led by academic staff.

Which? executive director, Richard Lloyd, said:

“With an increasingly competitive higher education sector, and soaring tuition fees, it has never been

more important for prospective students to get as much information as possible to help them make the right choice."

Man kills himself at Paris nursery school

A DOZEN children at a Paris nursery school, together with an adult, watched as a man in his 60s killed himself with a sawnoff shotgun yesterday (Thursday).

It happened just before noon, as infants at the Rochefoucauld School were leaving the premises for their

lunch break. A single shot was fired and no one else was injured.

The suicide victim not associated with the nursery school, a private Catholic institution which also has primary and secondary sections.

A psychological support team was sent to the school.

Schoolgirl killer is jailed for 38 years EVIL Stuart Hazell was jailed for at least 38 years on Tuesday after receiving a life sentence for the murder of schoolgirl Tia Sharp.

Hazell forced 12-yearold Tia Sharp’s parents to sit through days of horrendous and graphic evidence at the Old Bailey before changing his “not guilty” plea and confessing to killing her.

The 37-year-old hid her body in the loft of the home he shared with her grandmother at New Addington, south London, But police failed to find it, despite three searches of the premises.

Judge Mr Justice Nicol told Hazell: “Tia was a sparky girl who was full of life, but you took that life from her.

“All that lay ahead

of her - a career, loves and family of her own - will now never be.

And the loss of her has been devastating for her mother, her father

and all her relatives and friends.

“The tragedy of their loss and her death is because of your act in murdering Tia Sharp.

You are responsible.”

Gasps and cries of “yes” could be heard from Tia’s family as Hazell was taken down from the dock.

Earlier, he sat forward in his seat, staring intently, as the judge told him there was “no doubt” he had developed a sexual interest in Tia. He referred to a picture of Tia, believed to have been taken after her death, which he said “further degraded that young girl”.

The judge said there was “no pathological evidence” she had been sexually assaulted, although “it cannot be discounted”.

Mr Justice Nicol said there were a number of other “notable and serious” aggravating factors in the case.

They included Tia’s age, the “gross breach of trust” by Hazell and the concealment of her body, which was found wrapped in bin bags

and a sheet last August.

Tia’s family left court without speaking to the crowd of reporters who had gathered outside, although some of her relatives shouted, “Nowhere near long enough” and “RIP Tia”.

Witness statements described the torment her parents endured after learning Hazell had killed their daughter.

Her mother, Natalie Sharp, said she had so many questions” for Hazell, adding: “Sometimes I feel pity.

Sometimes I want to hurt him.”

Tia’s father, Steven Carter, said Hazell should serve his sentence, and then be hanged.

The judge said Hazell would be given only “the most modest of credit” for changing his plea to guilty on the fifth day of his trial.

He told him: “Your counsel says that you wished to avoid causing further distress to Tia’s

family. That is very commendable, but they have had to endure four days of a very public trial.

“It was necessary for the prosecution to lay out for the jury your sexual interest in Tia, and for the jury to see the photograph of Tia naked. Your plea of guilty has spared the family none of that.

“It may be the first act of remorse, as your counsel says, but because it comes so late I am afraid it will earn you only the most modest of credit.”

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Scola, of the Metropolitan Police’s Homicide and Serious Crime Command, said: “A minimum of 38 years is satisfying for both the investigating team and Tia’s friends and family,” he said.

“Hazell will have a very long time in prison to think about what he has done.”

M&S bank on a high-flier to boost clothing fortunes B R I TA I N ’ S biggest clothing retailer, Marks & Spencer, has recruited a top executive from Spanish- owned fashion brand Massimo Dutti.

The appointment of Queralt Ferrer, as the new head of design for its Autograph and Limited ranges, was announced on Wednesday as the company unveiled its most important womenswear collection in recent history.

Ms Ferrer will be responsible for two of its most strategicallyimportant collections when she joins M&S later this year.

She has been working for many years at Inditex, the giant fashion group which owns Zara as well as

Massimo Dutti. Her appointment was heralded by M&S chief executive Marc Bolland as another step in the development of its womenswear business.

And it followed after months of criticism from the City about

the direction of the business.

Marks is also announced the promotion of Gillian Ridley Whittle to the post of Development and Buying Director of womenswear, which is another key role in that section.

Their new roles were announced as Mr Bolland launched the retailer’s autumn and winter collections in London, with City analysts watching closely for evidence that the new ranges will enable M&S to

recapture market share lost to rivals such as Next and Zara.

M&S’s food business has been surging ahead, but the autumnwear collection is viewed as a serious test of the company’s ability to drive sales and profit growth,

and spark a share-price revival.

The company’s General Merchandise director, John Dixon, and Style Director Belinda Earl, who previously ran Debenhams, also announced that the M&S Collection will become the focal point of its clothing strategy.

Standalone brands, such as Per Una and Autograph, will remain in place, but the M&S Collection name will become prominent across the UK stores from July.

Mr Bolland has presided over seven consecutive quarters of declining sales of general merchandise.

But although this performance has been partly blamed on the economic climate the appalling weather throughout winter and spring, which has affected high street sales so badly this year, hasn’t helped.

Mixed reviews, but Brown has another money-spinner AUTHOR Dan Brown is already experiencing the sweet and sour taste of success with his latest offering.

His novel, Inferno, will almost certainly be snapped up by millions, -, it is unlikely to win any literary prizes if critics have their way.

One reviewer has described it as his “his worst book yet”.

But that won’t mean a jot to his millions of fans, some of whom queued outside the Waterstones store in London’s Piccadilly on Tuesday to get hold of Inferno.

It has already topped the Amazon book sales chart on the strength of pre-orders, which were 24% higher than those for Brown’s previous thriller, The Lost Symbol.

But despite the author’s impressive record of overall sales, which have exceeded 200 million, he is again under fire for his writing abilities.

The novel features old hero Robert Langdon, the Harvard professor, who is visiting cities in Italy and other European locations as he battles to stop the spread of a deadly virus.

themes from Dante’s Divine Comedy, is being lapped up by devotees of the Langdon series, which also includes Angels & Demons, The Da Vinci Code and The Lost Symbol.

But some press reviews have been

scathing about the writing quality – or lack of it!

The Daily Telegraph’s Jake Kerridge writes: “As a stylist, Brown gets better and better: where once he was abysmal, he is now just very poor.

“In the end, this is his worst book and for a sad, even noble reason his ambition here wildly exceeds his ability.”

The Daily Mail calls Inferno “bilge, but one hell of a page-turner”, while the The Guardian says it is “engineered with miraculous efficiency, a tasty cocktail of high culture and low thrills”.

Amazon says interest in Inferno has had a knockon effect for Brown’s back catalogue, with sales for his books rising by 340%, year-on-year as anticipation has grown.

The audiobook version of Inferno also topped the iTunes chart on Tuesday morning.

A Greek tragedy as Russian boy knifed POLICE in Greece are investigating the stabbing of an 11-year-old Russian boy on the island of Crete.

The youngster, on a family holiday, was in a critical condition after being stabbed at several times at a resort in the seaside town of Anissaras.

He suffered wounds to his back, chest and hands and was airlifted from a Crete hospital to Athens the following day for emergency medical treatment.

A Dutch national, in charge of the hotel’s activities for children, was detained by

police. The youngster went missing late on Tuesday after leaving his hotel room to search for his laptop and mobile phone.

Hours later, police said the young Russian had been spotted in a car park, near the hotel, with multiple stab wounds.

News of the attack sent shockwaves across the country, and through ministers, at the start of the tourist season.

The Greek Government, locked out of international markets and struggling desperately with an ever-growing recession, is hoping for an abundance of tourists this summer to help boost its economy.

We’re not all hooked on using the internet

SOME seven million adults in Britain have steered clear of the internet, and another one million have ventured on to the web in the past year.

But new figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) also show that 14% of over16s have never accessed material online.

It is interesting to note that more women than men have never used the internet (4.2m compared with 2.8m), while 326,000 adults climbed on board for the first time between January and March this year.

The ONS said: “Internet use is linked to various socio-economic and demographic characteristics, such as age, sex, disability, geographical location and weekly earnings.

“For example, those who are less likely to have used the internet include elderly and

disabled adults.”

A breakdown of the population by age showed that most people aged 16-24 (99%) have used the web.

Those least likely to have connected were 75 or over.

However, there was a marked increase in internet users among people of this age in the past two years.

At the beginning of 2011, it was estimated that 23.8% of this demographic had

accessed the internet, compared with 34.3% this year (1.6m).

The 3.1m non-users aged 75 or over make up 43% of the 7.1m who have never hooked up.

A regional breakdown of the ONS figures

showed that Londoners were most likely to have had a bash at going online. And an estimated 90% of those in the capital have accessed web content.

People in Northern Ireland were least likely

to have embraced the digital age, although 79% of adults had gone online.

The ONS said the overall increase in internet users since last year stood at 13%.

In the two years since it began to collate the data, it said the number of adults using the web rose by 2.4 million (6%), from an initial 41.1 million.

The stats’ organisation’s data showed income and disability was still proving to be a barrier to getting online.

“Individuals with no disability are over three times more likely to have used the internet than those with a disability,” said the ONS. It added: “Internet use has almost reached full coverage for those earning in excess of £500 a week, with internet use at 98% or above for all adults with weekly pay rates above this level.”

But more than 5% of workers with a gross weekly pay of less than £200 per week have never connected.

Tragedy as mum is found dead and the dad’s missing at sea TWO children, discovered on a remote Australian beach, were taken into care after their mother was washed up dead.

And, as we went to press last night (Thursday), their father was still missing after a snorkelling trip that went desperately wrong.

Police continued to search for 48-year-old Robert Shugg after the body of his 41-yearold partner, Kathreen Ricketson, was found near the idyllic holiday spot of Coral Bay, West Australian, on Wednesday.

Their children, a 13-year-old girl and a boy of 10, were on the beach as the tragedy unfolded.

“The missing man has been in the water a long time, and hopes of finding him fade with each passing hour,” said Senior Constable Barney Hutchison, from the West Australia water police.

The couple’s son raised the alarm after realising his parents were in trouble. He went into the water to swim with them and saw them face-down.

Police said there were failed attempts to resuscitate Ms Ricketson, while Mr Shugg disappeared

before he could be recovered.

“It must have been horrific,” said Inspector Dominic Wood. “It must be any child’s worst nightmare.”

The couple were reportedly travelling

around Australia with their two children when they went snorkelling at Elle’s Beach, about 682 miles north of Perth.

Coral Bay is at the southern end of the World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef, one of

a few places on earth where you can come face-to-fin with the whale shark, the biggest of all ocean fish, But police said there were no evident injuries on the woman’s body,

seemingly ruling out a shark attack.

The family, believed to be Australian, were on holiday from Canberra. the country’s capital, According to The Australian newspaper, they were staying at a campsite about an hour’s drive from Coral Bay. “We have been in contact with their families, and they’re making their way over to Western Australia from Tasmania,” said Senior Constable Hutchison.

The couple were planning to write a book about their travels in the country. On a blog, Ms Ricketson described the trip to Ningaloo as a “dream come true”.

The refuge is the Centre for Animal Protection and environment of Tenerife, and she stressed that it works solely with authorised municipalities Granadilla, Arona and Guia de Isora.

“Dogs can be brought to the refuge only by Protection Civil or the police, with the necessary documentation,” she said.

“If you do find a stray dog in those municipalities, please follow the correct procedure and call 112.

The collection can be arranged by the local police, who will inform Protection Civil to retrieve the dog and take it to Accion del Sol. The dog will immediately receive medical treatment if necessary. It will also be de-fleed, wormed, castrated/sterilised and micro-chipped.

injections, including rabies, and issued with a passport.

“If the dog is microchipped, then the owner will be contacted and the dog returned, or the owner prosecuted if the dog has been abandoned or ill treated.”

Marion added: “If you really want to help the situation here in Tenerife, then we all need to work in a legal and correct way.

“Unfortunately, five kittens were dumped in a box outside the refuge last week. Luckily, the security cameras were in operation so the necessary action will be taken.

“As you can imagine, this is not the correct environment for the kittens with so many dogs at the refuge.”

She immediately called the cat rescue centre, run by Julio Ramos, who agreed to take the kittens.

The refuge is situated in Camino Carrasco, 17, 38400, Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Cruz (922 373 000).

Cat lovers who would like to help out with food, blankets or any donations will be welcomed because the group is struggling in these hard times.

Estrellas make a real song and dance of it for Amate

ESTRELLAS Theatre School enjoyed a sunny, fund-raising afternoon at OmniBeach Restaurant in Punta Brava, near Puerto de la Cruz, on Sunday.

It is traditional in the entertainment sector for some time to be devoted to charity, so what a good grounding this was for the Estrellas students to be involved in so early in their careers.

As some will know, Estrellas hold classes in dance, acting and singing in the North and South of the Island.

In March, a fund-raising event was held at Vivo, Las Americas, in which the South students were featured, with a few from the North. And Sunday’s event mirrored this, the majority of the performers being from the North.

Amate is an initiative created by a group of women, who survived breast cancer. Their aim is to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of the

disease, to offer support and assistance, to promote a better quality of life and well-being to others who are, or have been, affected.

In addition to the show, superb raffle prizes were donated by: Hotel Tigaiga, Puerto de la Cruz; Los Zocos Club Resort, Lanzarote; Hoteles Globales Tamaimo Tropical Resort, Puerto Santiago: Restaurant Los Tulipanes, Puerto de la Cruz; Teide Divers, Puerto de la Cruz; Loro Parque, Puerto de la Cruz; Siam Park, Costa Adeje.

Children enjoy the same hand luggage allowance as adults, so families can take advantage of the new fare by combining their allowances. Families can also take buggies to the aircraft side, bring on a child seat and enjoy free seat allocation three days in advance of travel.

All British Airways’ short-haul customers will continue to receive free seat allocation within 24 hours of departure, priority boarding for families, complimentary food and drink, high levels of customer service and a frequent flyer programme that rewards them with Avios and tier points.

The awards are a celebration of cycling in the capital, showcasing ground-breaking new cycling initiatives, as well as highlighting the best community and youth cycling projects.

Over 2,500 people voted and Heathrow beat stiff competition from The Guardian and Roehampton University to win in its category The Cycle Hub is the only one of its kind operating at an airport in the country. Since launching two years ago 1,700 people have joined, resulting in an almost 45% increase in employees cycling to work at Heathrow - with up to 570 people doing so every day. Heathrow. Alongside the Cycle Hub, Heathrow has many measures in place to help both employees and local residents who don’t work at the airport, travel to and around it in an environmentally friendly way. Heathrow operates the only free travel zone in the

world, which includes 15 local bus services, and free travel between terminals for all staff and passengers on the underground.

Three of the UK's most renowned chefs are going back to catering college. Tom Kitchin, Theo Randall and Michel Roux Jr are each looking for a young student to take under their wing. All week, Michelin-starred chef Tom Kitchin has been on a search for a student with promise that he can help rise to the challenge of being his apprentice. He has spent time at his old catering college in Perth and from seven hopefuls he is now down to the best three.

With bonds beginning to form, the students are invited to cook at Tom's Edinburgh restaurant. Here they are each challenged to cook one of his signature dishes for a special lunch service attended by Tom's closest and most trusted restaurant colleagues.

Throwing them in at the deep end Tom has not chosen the simplest options on his menu, including a razor clam starter that cannot be cooked until the very last minute; a complex lamb main and a fresh but intricate dessert using seasonal fruit - there is a lot at stake for them to get it right.

The end of the 18th century was a bad time for Britain - the American colonies had been lost and Napoleon's forces were about to attack Britain. Under threat of invasion, the army said the country had to be mapped to see where the French were likely to invade, so in 1791 Lieutenant William Mudge was put in charge of this epic mapping survey. Upon arrival, Sajid finds that his father is not as highly regarded as he may have thought, and that Pakistan is not as idyllic as it was made to seem. George arrives at the end of the month to collect Sajid but is faced with his is own self-image issue, and realises that he himself has much to learn as well.

Professor Alice Roberts goes back 40,000 years in search of the great beasts of the Ice Age. This was the last time that giants like mammoths, woolly rhinos, and sabre-tooth cats ruled the planet. Based on the latest discoveries across the northern hemisphere, from the Siberian permafrost to American deserts, Alice reconstructs their lives in incredible detail.

In Land Of The Sabre-Tooth, Alice heads to North America which, during the Ice Age, was home to a diverse group of giant mammals. She discovers how the sabre-tooth cat’s out-sized teeth were vital for hunting, yet easily broken. Unlike today’s big cats which suffocate their prey, these terrifying predators would tear out the throat.

Surprising evidence of a bizarre giant - the Shasta ground sloth - includes tonnes of ‘mummified’ dung preserved in a cave in the Grand Canyon.

From this, scientists can piece together how these incredible grizzlybear-sized animals lived and died.

In the sands of Arizona, scientists are trying to piece together the remains of the strange armadillo-like Glyptodont. They are the size of a small car, and, unlike today’s armadillos, had a trunk!

One of the largest beasts of the Ice Age was the Columbian mammoth.

Dwarfing both the woolly mammoth and the African elephant, its home was the prairies of North America. Alice sees remarkable evidence on a rocky outcrop on the Californian coast – shiny rocks where the animals once stopped to scratch. Their presence points to a hidden grazing ground far out to sea - in the, Ice Age sea levels were so low they exposed vast coastal plains on which mammoths could roam.

Case Histories BBC 1, 20.30 Confirmed for BBC One on Jason Isaacs reprises his role as complex and compulsive private detective Jackson Brodie in crime drama Case Histories. In this first episode, Victoria Wood plays a retired policewoman who finds herself on the wrong side of the law.

Back in Edinburgh after a child-snatching job in Munich, Jackson struggles with guilt about whether he returned the child to the right parent or if he was duped.

A new case comes calling when Hope McMaster, a woman searching for her birth parents, approaches Jackson for help. His search takes him into the dark heart of 1979 police corruption and murder – and a secret that has remained buried for nearly 35 years.

The investigation crosses paths with Tracy Waterhouse, a retired police officer turned store detective. When Tracy witnesses a little girl being physically abused by her mother, she takes a surprising course of action which stirs the past for her and former police partner Barry, and presents a moral dilemma for Jackson. He must decide whether he is brave enough to risk another mistake by doing what he feels is right, or walk away.

Motivated by his desire to help those in need and a need to atone for his recent mistake, Jackson’s investigation sees the past and the present collide dramatically with the old retired cops, Len Lomax and Ray Strickland, refusing to go down without the fight of their lives.

Meanwhile, Jackson continues to avoid speaking to a newly engaged Louise after admitting his true feelings for her. And when his daughter, Marlee, makes a shock announcement, non-committal Jackson is taken aback.

Kevin McCloud revisits Alan and Judith Dawson, who in 2009 began constructing their prototype, prefabricated home in west Cumbria.

As well as creating a unique place to live, Alan was out to prove that the building system he'd spent 22 years developing actually worked. If he succeeded, the ambition was always to build more of them and save his recession-hit steelwork company. Alan and Judith thought they could put together the quickest house possible, taking just 15 days from start to finish, and all for ÂŁ300,000. It was an adventure that saw giant pieces of house driven down country roads, then craned and bolted together on site. But with so much attention given to the speed of construction, there was little time to think how the house might be to live in.

Convoy of stars lined up for new BBC One drama, Truckers Harry Treadaway (Fish Tank, Control), Ashley Walters (Bullet Boy, Inside Men), John Dagleish (Lark Rise To Candleford, Beaver Falls), Sian Breckin (Tyrannosaur, Donkey Punch) and Jenn Murray (The Fades, Dorothy Mills) will star alongside Stephen Tompkinson (Wild At Heart, DCI Banks) in new BBC One Drama, Truckers which has commenced filming.

Truckers, by acclaimed writer William Ivory, is a 5x60-minute series about modern Britain told through the lives of truck drivers working for a haulage yard in Nottingham.

Funny, moving, painful and raucous, Truckers tells stories of real life, and ordinary people pushed to extremes. In each episode one character undergoes a life changing journey and we are along for the ride. In an age when technology would make us seem ever more connected, the series uses the truck driver, alone in his cab, as a way to explore how isolated we can become within modern society and the importance of real human connection. These are powerful, moving stories, but the tone is always joyous and each story is one of redemption.

In episode one Malachi (Tompkinson) is still living with his wife and grown-up son Glen (Treadaway), 18 months after their divorce. Kidding himself that the relationship can still be fixed, he is stunned when his wife Sue announces she is to marry her boyfriend - that she does not love him anymore. This forces Malachi to look deep within himself and the life he is leading. He does not like what he sees. The resulting tailspin involves tears, laughter, fake tan, Viagra, a thong and attempted sex with a letter box as Malachi just tries to get a handle on where his life has been, where it went wrong and how he can maybe put it right...

Refurbs setting the pace today

By Sue McDonald IT is said that a sign of the property market recovery here is the sight of cranes on the skyline.

No it wasn’t Confucius who said it but a bloke in the bar - and he did have a point!

I have seen a few cranes dotted around, so fingers crossed that everything is on the move again.

What I have definitely seen more of is roadside skips and builders ripping out kitchens and bathrooms.

It may be a mixture of people who have owned the property for a while and recognise that it needs to be refurbished to bring it up to standard, and those who may have bought a used property to take advantage of the lower prices nowadays, and also improving their investment.

In any case, this is a good sign for us because these apartments will also require some interior design work, even if it is only new curtains and a bit of a redesign.

We are currently working on a couple of apartments in Cristian Sur, where they are being completely gutted.

We have stored the existing furniture for the clients (free of charge) while the builders do their work, and then resprayed some of the

furniture, and replaced some with new items.

Once the builders have finished, the property will be cleaned, and we can install all the items, original and new, in one go.

In one particular case, they are changing from a rather dated, flowery, pine sofa bed, to a bright-purple, modern sofa bed and chair, and the original wood furniture painted white.

Add to that some white curtains with a hint of purple and silver, and it’s going to look spectacular, particularly when we add some pictures and cushions using the purple accent colour.

Not all people are so bold with their choice of colours, but even a change of curtains, or a few throws and cushions, can make a big difference.

By respraying their lounge furniture, the clients have saved money on replacements,

and invested this (wisely, I must say) in a comfortable and practical sofa bed.

Other improvements are cosmetic, but will give the effect that the apartment looks brand new. And with that colour sofa, it will definitely have the Wow factor.

Whether you rent your property out, or use it yourself on a regular basis, the comfort of the sofa bed and beds themselves will have a major effect on whether you have a comfortable stay or not.

So these are items worth spending a bit more on, and maybe saving in other, purely cosmetic areas.

Equally, if building and furnishing work is being done, this is good for the whole Island, as all those builders working, buying, etc, means there will be more money in the local economy.

And an improvement for all of us!

Web sales pass the £1bn mark for John Lewis Online sales at John Lewis have passed the £1bn mark on a rolling 52-week basis, alongside a successful launch of a new multimillion pound web platform.

The milestone comes a year ahead of the retailer’s forecast, which had estimated reaching £1bn of sales in 2014.

The department store has invested nearly £40m in its new website during the three-year project, which is the foundation for future online growth and its customer-focused omnichannel strategy.

Mark Lewis, who has recently joined the retailer as online director, said: “Passing the £1bn milestone almost an entire year ahead of schedule is a fantastic achievement for us, and a reflection of how central online shopping has become to our customers.

“We have a leading omnichannel strategy which our customers love, but to continue to deliver the service our customers want, we need a website which will serve us as well as the old one did, and maintain our position as a leading innovator in online retailing.”

The new website features new functionality including an enhanced wish-list function, search history, and more inspirational content, with more customer-focused functionality planned for the future.

With mobile now accounting for over 25% of

traffic to johnlewis.com, the retailer has also revamped its mobile offer to mirror the creative design of the main site, and plans to launch a new app with details to follow later this year.

Arriving passengers will also be encouraged to start their own English garden at home - 20,000 packets of seeds will be given away in the terminals, each with the potential to grow a square metre of wild flowers.

Colin Matthews, Heathrow CEO said; ‘The UK’s hub airport is British and thoroughly international at the same time. Heathrow is pleased to join forces with the Royal Horticultural Society to celebrate some of the best of Britain with visitors from around the world.’

Waitrose Flower Garden will seasonally comprise 850 different flowers, plants, bulbs and seeds over the coming year as well as 80 gardening tools and garden care products in store, and on the website, waitrosegarden.com.

Elements of the Waitrose Flower Garden range will launch in all shops by mid April and a total of 41 branches will also dedicate at least 120 sq ft of outdoor space each to the range including an outdoor gardening ‘shed’ selling plants and gardening accessories.

The range will include a variety of plants from topiary to herbs and fruit trees to herbaceous flowering plants with prices ranging from £3 to £75.

A total of 40% of the in-shop flower range will be British and 20% supports the Waitrose Foundation in Kenya.

Alan Titchmarsh, who earlier this month came on board at Waitrose to help raise the profile of British agriculture and horticulture, will offer his expert gardening tips and green-fingered advice to Waitrose shoppers on the site.

Alan will share tips on garden care in the ‘how to’ area of the site including appearing in video clip demonstrations, write monthly musings on myriad subjects and pick his top 50 gardening products for each season.

Customers will be able to sign up for a monthly e-newsletter containing exclusive access to seasonally relevant content.

BE SUN SAFE...

WHEN the sun’s beating down, as it is at the moment, you need to think about more than just protecting your skin.

Your hair and your scalp will suffer, too, if you’re not ready for the rays that are hitting you when you are sunbathing, or simply walking around.

The force of the sun is much more intense here in Tenerife, and I cannot stress enough about how much you should care for your hair through the summer months.

Light blondes are most at risk, so anyone with tinted or bleached hair should always apply protection to counter the sun. This is also a must if you’re using hair irons.

So don’t forget, you must protect, protect, protect!

Okay, so what’s the best way to do this?

Well, first and foremost,

think about your skin when you’re in the sun.

You always put factor on to protect this and, likewise, with your hair. We carry a range of products, like many others, which are used before and after sun exposure: a defence spray to block the intense rays; a shampoo to cleanse and moisturise after sunbathing, and a deep, intense masque to hydrate and nourish the hair.

This should be done every time you expose your hair for more than, say, half-an-hour.

You won’t be able to see the damage you are doing to your hair while in the sun, but the results will show later in the year if you don’t act now.

I get clients telling me that they think they care for their hair, and that they don’t overexpose it to the sun. Yet they use nothing on it while sunbathing If they are chocolate brown, then their hair, as well as their skin, is also getting burnt.

Never apply serums or

waxy-type products to your hair before taking the sun because these will literally FRY the hair and not protect it at all.

If you’re having a dip and are sitting in the sun later, the sea water is a killer if your hair is colour-treated.

Never sunbathe with wet hair but try to cover it with a scarf, or put on a hair masque.

Leaving it to dry with salt water in your hair will really dry it out.

The same goes for chlorinated water.

Always rinse the hair when you come out of the pool or sea to prevent serious damage.

I know I go on at you, but I’ve recently been seeing some rather upset clients, who have had some serious damage done to their hair.

And it’s not so good for me to have to begin to put things right because that’s going to take a long time.

So remember: enjoy your sunbathing by all means. but PLEASE protect your hair!

Sunshine may lower risk of heart disease THE age-old debate about whether sunbathing is good for your health has resurfaced, with a surprising twist.

It has been said for ages that too much sun can bring on skin cancer. Now, though, scientists are claiming that 20 minutes in the sun could help lower the risk of heart disease.

The sunlight’s UV is known to have a number of benefits by helping the body produce vitamin D. It is also the main cause of damage that causes skin cancer.

But University of Edinburgh researchers found that exposure to ultraviolet light lowered the blood pressure of volunteers.

They say the findings may lead them to reconsider current advice for sun exposure.

High blood pressure is one of the main risk factors in heart disease and stroke, affecting around one-third of

the population. But the scientists believe that the sun’s UV rays cause nitrogen stored in the body to be released into the blood stream, relaxing blood vessels and lowering blood pressure.

However, they also warn of the skin-cancer dangers of excessive exposure to UV light, so it’s a finely-balanced subject.

Dr Richard Weller, a senior lecturer in dermatology at the University of Edinburgh, who led the research, cautioned that more work on the theory needed to be carried out.

“Before we can offer advice to patients about using sunlight as a treatment for high blood pressure, we will look at the relative risks of heart disease and skin cancer in people who have received different amounts of sun exposure,” he said.

“If this confirms that sunlight reduces the death rate from all causes, we will need to reconsider our advice

on sun exposure.”

But he added: “We suspect that the benefits to heart health of sunlight will outweigh the risk of skin cancer.”

The researchers, who presented their findings at this week’s International Investigative Dermatology Conference in Edinburgh, studied the blood pressure of 24 volunteers.

They were asked to spend 20 minutes under a UV tanning lamp, which allowed the dose of light to be controlled.

The scientists found that while receiving UV light, the volunteers’ blood pressure dropped and remained lower than before for up to an hour.

When they were exposed to heat but no UV light from the tanning lamps, their blood pressure also dropped during exposure, but then quickly increased back to previous levels.

Laboratory tests also showed that skin cells exposed to UV light released nitric oxide, a nitrogen-based chemical known to cause blood vessels to relax.

Nina Goad, from the British Association of Dermatologists, warned that the latest findings were still in their early stages as the study had been very small.

She added: “Emerging evidence about possible health benefits of sunlight do not invalidate the indisputable weight of evidence showing the link between excess UV exposure and skin cancer, which is the UK’s most common form of cancer.”

Jolie tells world of move to foil cancer ANGELINA JOLIE, the Oscar-winning actress, has gone public about her double mastectomy.

The American beauty was found to have a faulty gene which sharply increased the chance of her developing breast and ovarian cancer.

Jolie, who lives with Hollywood star Brad Pitt, has written movingly in a New York Times article that her mother fought cancer for 10 years before her death.

She told readers: “My doctors estimated that I had an 87% risk of breast cancer and a 50% risk of ovarian cancer, although the risk is different in the case of each woman.

“Only a fraction of breast cancers result from an inherited gene mutation. Those with a defect in BRCA1 have a 65% risk of getting it, on average.

“Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimise the risk as

much I could. I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy.”

The 37-year-old, one of the highest-paid film stars of all, has six children - three by Pitt and three adopted. She added: “On 27th April, I finished the three months of medical procedures that the mastectomies involved. “During that time, I have been able to keep this private and to carry on with my work.

But I am writing about it now because I hope that

other women can benefit from my experience.

“Cancer is still a word that strikes fear into people’s hearts, producing a deep sense of powerlessness. “But today, it is possible to find out through a blood test whether you are highly susceptible to breast and ovarian cancer, and then take action.”

Angelina, who was given breast implants, says: “There have been many advances in this procedure in the last few years, and the results can be

beautiful. “I wanted to tell other women that the decision to have a mastectomy was not easy.

But I am very happy I made it. “My chances of developing breast cancer have dropped from 87% to under 5%, so I can tell my children that they don’t need to fear they will lose me to breast cancer.”

In the article, headlined My Medical Choice, the star revealed that Pitt was by her side “for every minute” of her treatment.

“I am fortunate to have a partner who is so loving and supportive,” she writes. “So to anyone who has a wife or girlfriend going through this, know that you are a very important part of the transition.”

The UK’s NHS guidelines recommend that anyone at “high risk” of developing breast cancer at some point in her life be gene-tested.

Liberty X singer Michelle Heaton, who had a double mastectomy last year, told Sky News: “She is 100% right in coming out and letting everybody know what she has been through - and how she has come out the other end.”

She hoped the press coverage over the last six months of her own experience, and that of Jolie and returning X-Factor judge Sharon Osbourne, who had the same operation after finding out she carried the faulty breastcancer gene, would “have a positive impact for women who are deciding whether they should be tested for this gene”.

It’s much better to be alive...

By Val Sainsbury FOR those women who are unfortunate enough to carry the mutated BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, a double mastectomy would be the most obvious step to take.

It is not really a question of showing bravery, but rather a determination to reduce, drastically, the risk of developing breast cancer.

To not have it done would be to show real bravery, because these women would be living with the fear of cancer all their lives.

It is always helpful when someone in the public eye can share his or her experience, where illness is concerned.

Angelina’s risk of developing breast cancer has been reduced from about 85% to 5%, which is remarkable.

I am always puzzled as to why some women are reluctant to have a breast removed, when this action could prevent their deaths.

Surely it is better to be alive, than worry about appearances.

I have had several breast-cancer scares over the years, one as recently as two months ago, and would never have hesitated for a second had my consultant recommended a mastectomy. One FleetStreet columnist pointed out this week: “… anyone about to undergo a mastectomy now knows that Brad Pitt could still find them attractive.”

But our lives are much more important than any man’s opinion of us!

All this makes me wonder why anyone would want to have a breast-enlargement operation, when implants have been shown to interfere with mammography, in that about 55% of breast tissue is obscured.

As a result, 67% more tumours are missed than normal.

Surely, to be healthy is far more important.

Angelina is a beautiful woman, with six precious children. Her decision to undergo this operation would, almost certainly, have been made easier, because she would want to be there for them as they grow up.

Let us not forget, though, those who have undergone this procedure who are not in the public eye.

No publicity surrounds them, and they are not able to raise awareness in the way that Angelina has.

Nevertheless, they are to be applauded, too, for they would have had to have gone through exactly the same emotions.

One positive here is that no cancer is present, so chemotherapy and radiotherapy would not be required. I was interested to read, recently, that some women have adopted a different approach from the moreusual implants.

They have had their chests adorned with a variety of beautifully-designed tattoos.

Usually, I am definitely not a fan of this kind of body art, but they looked really lovely, and it took the attention away from the fact that they no longer had their breasts.

Unfortunately, the mutations of these genes also increase the risk of ovarian cancer, by as much as 50%.

Experts say such carriers, generally, should have their ovaries removed as soon as they have finished having children, or by the age of 40.

For this reason, Angelina is planning to have this operation in the future. All the best to her!

Scientists reveal that lemon-aids a better day

Neuroscientists, on behalf of Sainsbury’s, have revealed the results of a unique study into the subjective and physiological emotional responses to the nation’s top day enhancers.

They show that a simple glass of lemonade elicits a greater subjective and physiological emotional

response than other every day pleasures, including a text message from a loved one or bagging a bargain in the sales.

The experiment, designed to identify which ordinary experiences are most likely to make the everyday more special, used hypnosis to

induce participants into a trance to heighten communication with the subconscious mind.

Participants were then asked to visualise a series of everyday scenarios and scientists measured their subjective and physiological enjoyment to each situation, by recording electrodermal activity using electrodes attached to the fingers, and measuring heart rate using electrocardiogram connected to the chest and torso.

After extensive testing, the study revealed that the top three moodboosters are a glass of chilled lemonade, biting into a homemade, freshly baked cupcake and turning on the radio to hear the start of your all-time favourite song.

While simple lemonade may top the chart

of every day enhancers, it seems a message from your loved ones does not have quite the same effect; a funny text from family or friends only just squeezed in to the top ten experiences that give us the feel good factor.

Shopaholics and impatient drivers might also be surprised to hear that bagging a bargain and finding the very the last car parking space fared even worse; discovering an item in the sale that you’ve been lusting after came in at 11th while avoiding the frustration of searching for a place to park by driving straight into the last space was bottom of the table.

Each of the three enjoyment measures (subjective ratings; electrodermal activity and heart rate) were combined to

obtain an overall enjoyment ranking for each type of stimulus.

Propstore is a London Café Bar which has been built using the scenery and props from National Theatre productions such as Hansel and Gretel and the Curious Incident of the dog in the nighttime.

Recipe of the week Goran’s tasty reminder of home GORAN PETKOVIC, head grill chef at the Treehouse Bar & Grill in Chayofa, was born in Leskovac, South Serbia.

It’s a country rich in culture and innovative, grilled dishes, and Goran invites you to prepare and enjoy this delightful, South Serbian recipe.

Leskovacka muckalica (Yugoslavian spicy Goulash) Serves 4 persons Ingredients 1 large onion 1 green pepper 1 red pepper 50g garlic Perijil 4 tomatoes 100g bacon 300g pork 2 small dried chillis (or to taste) Mustard, salt, pepper, ketchup, cayenne pepper

Method Take and chop finely 1 large onion, 1 red & 1 green pepper, 50g of garlic, 4 ripe tomatoes and a handful of parsley. Then lightly simmer all these in vegetable oil, while adding 1 teaspoon of black pepper and 1 teaspoon of salt.

Reduce all the ingredients and leave to the side.

Take your fresh pork

and dice to a reasonable size (it’s important not to make it too small, as the meat will be grilled) take the diced pork and place directly on your grill/BBQ, turning until cooked through completely.

Then place all the meat with the reduced vegetables, adding, ½ litre of water and leave to cook for an hour on a low flame.

Finally, in the last 10 minutes, add, 1 tablespoon of English mustard, 100g of ketchup and ½ tablespoon of cayenne pepper (according to taste).

Finally, serve in large traditional Serbian lepinja, or a large Yorkshire pudding to you and me.

By Jav BRITAIN has been infatuated with fast Fords for years, and the love affair looks set to continue with the arrival of the new Fiesta ST.

The company, taking the already-impressive standard car as a base, has added sporty, styling tweaks inside and out which enhance the regular Fiesta’s looks.

The new model is powered with a 179bhp 1.6-litre turbo-charged engine. Add in stiffer suspension, a sports exhaust and a pair of supportive Recaro seats, and what you have is a thrilling Fiesta ST package, from just £16,995.

That it undercuts rivals Renaultsport Clio and Peugeot 208 GTi by around £2,000 makes it even more special.

The ST-2 will probably top the model’s popularity stakes, and the ST’s arrival

VOLKSWAGEN’S limited edition VW Beetle GSR, now available in the UK, is limited to 100 models.

In fact, the company are offering a total of just 3,500 examples globally, with UK deliveries arriving in September.

The original Beetle GSR - short for Gelb Schwarzer Renner, or Yellow Black Racer in German - was first sold in Germany 40 years ago.

That was also limited to 3,500 units, and featured a matt-black bonnet, bootlid and bumpers, and black sidestripes above the door sills.

Now, VW have reinterpreted the GSR with their latest Beetle, which made its debut at the Chicago Motor Show earlier this year.

The new car, also

coincides with the face-lifted version of the regular Fiesta hatchback.

But, the ST gets its own version of the enlarged trapezoidal front grille, flanked by narrow projector headlights.

The car also features a more aggressivelooking front bumper, which houses a pair of foglights.

All models are threedoor only, which adds to the sporty look, but it comes at the expense of practicality.

Both ST and ST-2 trim levels have smart 17inch alloys as standard, while there’s a bigger wing and chunkier bumper at the rear.

Inside, all STs get the supportive Recaro seats, piano-black trim and a sports steering wheel, which combine to give the car a smart, subtly, sporty look that just about sets it apart from the rest of the Fiesta range.

Ford has two types of performance models range-topping RS and warmer ST. And as this car falls into the latter

category, it has been designed with everyday use in mind.

The steering is light, direct and offers plenty of feedback and, for such a small unit, the engine sounds great, It is helped, no doubt, by a sound symposer which pipes bassier engine notes into the interior, while throttle response is instant and it shows a good turn of pace.

An over-boost function delivers 200bhp for 15-second bursts, while 240Nm of torque indicates there’s excellent, in-gear flexibility.

The suspension is 15mm lower than the regular car, and around 12% stiffer, which ensures extremely engaging handling and a pretty comfortable ride.

Standard torque vectoring and a threemode traction control system also help, although the ST is keen to spin an inside wheel when accelerating out of tight bends.

Although it’s a performance model, underneath the ST is

just a three-door Fiesta, which means that it still retains a decentsized boot, and rearseat space isn’t too compromised by the Recaro seats.

Despite the larger engine, six-speed gearbox and wider wheels, the turning circle isn’t really compromised.

The front seats are set nice and low and are really comfortable, while the ride is firm but nice and supple.

Engine noise is well suppressed at 70mph, too, making it a comfortable car to drive longer distances.

Like any performance car, the harder you drive, the greater your motoring expenses.

Ford’s fuel claim is 47.9mpg, but this is bound to plummet once you open it up.

Two models are available, ST and ST2, - and both are priced competitively. All cars get 17-inch alloys and

Ford’s SYNC system, while ST-2 models add part-leather upholstery, heated front seats and a Sony stereo.

A styling kit, with grey alloys and illuminated ST door sill plates, is the only option.

Plus, there are only three exterior colours to choose from: blue, red or go-faster Molten Orange.

But that’s a hardly a problem with this zippy, mouth-watering little machine.

extra GSR lettering, RLine bumpers and black door mirror caps. But,

unlike the original, the new GSR can also be ordered in grey and black.

It features 19-inch alloys instead of the original’s 15-inch wheels, while this car benefits from black R-Line racing seats, with contrasting yellow stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a numbered plaque and a rear spoiler.

Driving its front wheels is a 2-litre, TSI turbocharged petrol engine with 207bhp and 207lb ft of torque, making it four times more powerful than the original 1.3-litre GSR. It is also 10bhp healthier than the existing Beetle Turbo, the standard version of which will now gain this newer tune of engine.

It’s enough to hustle the Beetle GSR from 0-62mph in 7.3sec, while the top speed is 142mph.

Volkswagen claim the Beetle GSR will return fuel economy of 38.7mpg and emit 169g/ km of CO2.

It can be ordered with a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox. The manual version costs £24,900, while the DSG model will set you back a further £1,500.

The company say the non-GSR 2.0-litre turbo Beetle will benefit from same 207bhp version of the engine - up from 197bhp - for cars ordered now.

CDT wound down their home league campaign in lowkey style as they were chinned by lowly Alcala for the second season running.

The result isn’t worth a tin of beans, unless you are a fan of Alcala. In that case, their battle to avoid the drop rolls into the final weekend.

For Tenerife fans, what should have been a celebration of winning the division turned into a damp squib.

In fact, the afternoon had the feeling of a wet January Sunday afternoon, when you were stuck at your grannies playing gin rummy. Nobody really bothered with what was in front of them.

The Tenerife side were unrecognisable from the first-choice line-up, and we also smothered a few myths. “Give the kids a chance,” is an often-used mantra. Well, Tenerife boss Alavero Cervera did just that - and it didn’t work!

Ayose proved he is no lone striker, while fans will pray that Sergio Aragoneses doesn’t get injured or red-carded in the play-offs.

Young pup Roberto made his senior debut in goal and, hand on heart, he’s rubbish. Harsh?

Tenerife will play home and away to the winners of either section 2, 3 or 4. So what do we know about them?

But it’s their away form which has really caught the eye. They have lost just once since Christmas and that was the only time they haven’t netted away ALL SEASON. Viguera is their top scorer, but he’s no world-beater.

He certainly didn’t look anything special when I saw him play for Albacete last season.

But Alaves have goals all over the park.

They are a big side, wellorganised and cherryripe. They were pushed all the way by Eibar and,

make no mistake, they look a better side than Tenerife.

L’HOSPITALET THE boys from Catalonia have work to do if they are to make Monday’s draw. They have a two-point lead over Huracan, but they have a tricky home match with play-off chasers Olimpic.

They also have 79 points, but there is no doubt that this is the weakest section.

The top five sides are head and shoulders ahead of the rest, even with Villarreal’s B team in this section.

L’Hospitalet have not tasted second-tier football since England won the World Cup, and to be where they are is quite an achievement.

They are full of journeymen, but manager Jordi Vinyals has got them playing some good football. He had a fine playing career and he has brought the Goup 3

remarkable season. Bigspending Cartagena were everyone’s tip to win this section, with fellow big-guns Albacete and Cadiz not too far behind.

While the last two have had a horror campaign, Cartagena have never been off Jaen’s coat-tails.

Jaen’s success is built on their rock-solid defence. For a team top of the table, they have scored just 43 goals in 37 games! Second-bottom CD San Roque have notched 44.

That’s even more amazing when you consider they scored five on the opening day of the season against Villanovense.

They have lost just once at home, and have conceded just 12 goals in 19 away games. This shows them to be welldrilled, disciplined and patient.

They should beat San Fernando on Sunday, and they will be a real danger in the play-offs.

You wouldn’t want to be chasing a tie against these boys. Dangerous.

Should Tenerife lose the two-legged tie, then they will be paired with one of the sides who have finished second, third or fourth in the last eight of the play-offs.

Win that and they face another two-legged tie before going up.

Fingers-crossed, this scenario will not happen.

And, fingers-crossed, we don’t get Alaves in Monday’s draw!

Beckham calls it a day after 20 glorious years DAVID BECKHAM has brought the curtain down on his dazzling career, which has spanned 20 years.

The 38-year-old East Londoner, has become a household figure throughout the world, and has made a fortune, said to be around £165 million, via football and his off-pitch activities, including promotional work for high-profile companies.

As well as winning league titles in Spain, Italy and England, he also holds the record for making 115 international appearances as an England outfield player.

Beckham, who kicked off his career at Manchester United and moved on to Real Madrid, Los Angeles and, briefly, Galaxy AC Milan, will reject an extended, one-year deal at current club Paris Saint-Germain. (PSG).

After winning the French title with the club, Beckham said he wanted to finish his career on a high.

Mancini sacked, and City plan expansion

MANCHESTER CITY, who have just axed manager Roberto Mancini, are to announce plans for a £50m investment to expand their stadium capacity by 6,000, with an option to go even bigger.

Sport In Brief Nadal in peak form for his 40th clay title

RAFAEL NADAL, Spain’s tennis superstar, who has battled back from a lengthy time out through injury, won Sunday’s Madrid Open, notching his 23rd ATP World Tour Masters title.

Nadal’s impressive 6-2, 6-4 victory over 15th seed Stanislas Wawrinka was his ninth straight triumph over the Swiss No2.

“I’m very happy,” said Nadal. “I think I played a really good match - the best match of the whole week.

“Being able to play here in Madrid and being able to win in front of all my people is something really special.”

The 26-year-old Mallorcan equalled Thomas Muster’s tally of 40 clay-court titles and leaves him just six behind fellow left-hander Guillermo Vilas.

Happy Alonso homecoming, but Hamilton is left deflated

SPANISH Formula 1 ace Fernando Alonso secured victory for his Ferrari team on home territory in the Barcelona Grand Prix on Sunday.

Despite starting fifth on the grid, the Oviedoborn driver flew past Britain’s Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Finland’s Kimi Räikkönen (Lotus) into third position, with Germany’s Nico Rosberg (Mercedes) and three-time world champion Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) ahead of him.

Rosberg, who won qualifying, was already struggling to hold his position and Alonso got past Vettel after the first pit stop, gaining further ground.

Ferrari ended up with two podiums as Massa took third, with Räikkönen splitting the teammates.

But it was a dismal day all round for Hamilton, who came 12th after complaining to his Mercedes team over the mic: “I can’t go any slower!”

It was a reference to his deteriorating tyres - a constant nightmare for all drivers - and manufacturers Pirelli are said to be firming up the compound to enable drivers to get more wear out of them.

Hamilton, 26, added: “There was just no grip - it was like sliding around on all fours.

I don’t know why it has taken us so long to grab hold of it, but we need to figure it out.”

Nightmare facing London’s big two ARSENAL and Chelsea face a battle of wits as well as points on Sunday, which could lead to them meeting in an end-of-season play-off.

That’s the last thing they want after an arduous season – especially Chelsea, who have played more games than any other Premier League team.

They were stretched to the limit by Benfica during Wednesday’s Europa League Final in Holland - their 68th game of the season - before emerging 2-1 winners, deep into time added on.

Their exertions in the Amsterdam Stadium will, no doubt, have

pleased the Arsenal players, who will surely be hoping they will finally run out of steam on Sunday against Everton at Stamford Bridge.

Even League officials will be crossing their fingers that they won’t face a major headache if the teams finish the season level on points, goal difference and goals scored.

That will be the outcome if Arsenal win 2-1 at Newcastle and Chelsea draw 0-0 against Everton in their final Premier games of the season.

Those results would leave the clubs jointthird and facing a play-off for the third automatic Champions League qualification spot.

There will be a big sigh of relief for League of-

ficials if Arsenal fail to win, and Tottenham overhaul them by beating Sunderland, That would see Tottenham leapfrog the Gunners into fourth place.

But if the worst scenario were to happen, it would leave the Premier League facing the awkward problem of when to arrange the play-off.

Chelsea have an endof-season American tour, in which they play friendlies against Manchester City next week.

Then there are England’s friendlies on 29th May, against the Republic of Ireland, and in Brazil on 2nd June.

Neither club would want the season to stretch into June, but the play-off regulation is part of Premier League rules, which state:

“If at the end of the season, the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because two or more clubs are equal on points, goaldifference and goalsscored, the clubs concerned shall play-off one or more deciding league matches on neutral grounds, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the board.”

So we are all set for another nail-biting end to a Premier League season. Last year, Manchester City delivered the goods with a lastgasp goal to snatch the title from their United neighbours.

All TV eyes will be trained on Stamford Bridge and the Emirates Stadium this Sunday to discover the outcome!

Jim’s pin-point lesson for ladies

THE Fun Golfers’ ladies still can’t get anywhere near the pin, as they demonstrated at Los Palos during Sunday’s competition.

More than 20 players took part in perfect conditions, and Jim Wilson

showed the girls just how to do it by winning the men’s Nearest the Pin contest.

Competition winners were Brian Anderson & Graham Hewitt, followed by Keith Norman & Don Bennett, with

Jim Wilson & Ian Burnley third.

The next Fun Golfers’ event takes place on Sunday, 2nd June (note the change) and it will be the Three-Club Challenge.
