MurdereD! THE soldier murdered on a London street has been named as Drummer Lee Rigby, from Manchester.
The 25-year-old, from the 2nd Battalion the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, was hacked down in cold blood by two men wielding knives, a meat cleaver and other weapons near the Royal Artillery Barracks in Woolwich, in front of shocked onlookers. He leaves behind a two-year-old son. Two men are under arrest in hospital after being shot by police near the barracks on Wednesday afternoon, in the aftermath of the attack. Two other people, a man and a woman, both aged 29 - were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder, following raids on properties in London and Saxilby, in connection with the attack. The main suspects, a 22-year-old and his companion, Michael Adebolajo, 28-year-old, were known to security services, according to sources. Witnesses said the attackers shouted “Allah” as they set about killing him brutally. The victim’s name was announced by the Ministry of Defence pending formal police identification. Police have issued an appeal for anyone who has still or moving images of the incident to email them to their incident room. They asked anyone sending in images to include their name and contact details which, they said, would be treated in the strictest confidence. Ingrid Loyau-Kenned, a cub scout leader and mother-of-two, recalled the moment she confronted the alleged attackers and warned them: “You are going to lose.” Another witness, James Heneghan, said the soldier had been
attacked with kitchen knives like he was “a piece of meat”. He told LBC radio: “They were hacking at this poor guy, literally.” One passer-by filmed Adeboloja holding a bloodied meat cleaver and saying: “We must fight them as they fight us. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Incredibly, he carried on, saying: “I apologise that women have had to witness this today, but in our land our women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don’t care about you.” A Ministry of Defence statement read: “An extremely popular and witty soldier, Drummer Rigby was a larger-thanlife personality within the Corps of Drums and was well known, liked and respected across the Second Fusiliers.” Commanding officer Lt Col Jim Taylor said of Drummer Rigby: “An experienced and talented side-drummer and machine-gunner, he was a true warrior and served with distinction in Afghanistan, Germany and Cyprus.” Capt Alan Williamson said: “Drummer Rigby, or ‘Riggers’ as he was known within the platoon, was a cheeky and humorous man, always there with a joke to brighten the mood.” Prime Minister David Cameron said outside 10 Downing Street yesterday (Thursday) that said the attacks were “solely and purely”

the responsibility of the individuals involved. More than 24 hours after the killing, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: “Everyone in Defence is shocked and saddened by the events of yesterday. This was a senseless murder of a soldier who has served the Army faithfully in a variety of roles, including operational tours in Afghanistan. “Our thoughts today are with his family and loved ones, who are trying to come to terms with this terrible loss.” Mr Hammond, when asked if the attack showed how vulnerable soldiers were, whether in uniform or not, replied:
“I think it reminds us how vulnerable we all are, but it also reminds us, by the response of the public, that we are not going to be cowed by this kind of terrorist action.” Shortly after the killing, a man thought to be 28-year-old Mr Adebolajo, was filmed by a passer-by, saying he carried out the attack because British soldiers killed Muslims every day. Sources said reports that the men had featured in “several investigations” in recent years - but were not deemed to be planning an attack - “were not inaccurate”. They confirmed one
of the suspects was intercepted by police last year while leaving the country. According to BBC sources, Mr Adebolajo, a Briton of Nigerian descent, comes from a devout Christian family, but took up Islam after leaving college in 2001. In other developments: The Metropolitan Police said police officers arrived within nine minutes of the first 999 call, and armed officers were there within 14 minutes. An increased police presence was in Woolwich and the surrounding areas throughout last night and would be there “as
long as needed”, said Mark Rowley, Assistant Commissioner for Specialist Crime and Operations. With dozens of witnesses to the killing, police are urging them to contact the Met’s anti-terrorism hotline with any information they may have. Sir David Richards, Chief of Defence Staff General, said: “It’s always a tragedy, and it’s particularly poignant that it happened on the streets of this capital city of ours. “We’re absolutely determined not to be intimated into not doing the right thing - whether it’s here in this country or in Afghanistan, or wherever we seek to serve the nation.” Security at Woolwich Barracks and others in London has been increased, and Gen Richards added: “I’m confident that base security is as tight as it’s ever been, and necessarily so. “It’s a very difficult balancing act. We are very proud of the uniform we wear; we have huge support around the country; this is a completely isolated incident.” The Prime Minister said: “We will never give in to terror or terrorism in any of its forms.” Mr Cameron highlighted the actions of Ingrid LoyauKennett, saying it demonstrated that “confronting extremism is a job for us all”. BBC defence correspondent Caroline Wyatt said that since British forces intervened in Iraq and Afghanistan, they and their families had been well aware they might be targets at home. And the Muslim Council of Britain said it had received “reports of hate attacks and abuse faced by mosques and individual Muslims following the inexcusable and criminal murder”. At least two plots by Islamist extremists to kill soldiers in the UK have been foiled by security forces in recent years.

News In Brief Hold-up suspect held
A FAILED attempt to hold up a car rental company in the Las Vistas beach area of Los Cristianos on Monday led to the arrest of a man from La Palma. According to police sources, the individual was already on remand awaiting a court appearance in Arona. Following the failed robbery, he ran into the street and threatened passers-by with a knife. An off-duty policeman from Santa Cruz chased and tackled the 47-year-old, and detained him until police arrived.

Canarian Day fiestas
This coming Thursday (30th May) is Día de Canarias - Canarian Day - which means a fiesta day throughout the whole Archipelago. Each year, Canarians celebrate the anniversary of the first official Parliament session of the islands, which took place on 30th May 1983, following the Canaries becoming an autonomous community within Spain in August 1982. A whole range of events are taking place throughout Tenerife. Check out your local municipality website to see what’s going on in your area.
British twins found dead
As we go to print, Police in Malaga are beginning an inquiry into the deaths of elderly British twin brothers at their home in Fuengirola. The two men, aged 83, were found by police after locals reported a smell coming from their flat. Firefighters had to break down the door to get in. One of the men was in an armchair in the lounge and the other was lying on a bed. They both had plastic bags over their heads and parcel tape over their mouths. A post-mortem will be carried out to ascertain the exact cause of death. Police are treating it as a suicide pact, but they have not ruled out any line of inquiry, including murder.

History unfolding For a personal project I’m delving into the National Archive, which is the UK government’s history unit. Whilst digging, I’ve noticed that they have released previously secret files concerning the role of British intelligence in the Second World War and early Cold War. There’s loads of info including security matters relating to Wallis Simpson and the abdication of HM King Edward VIII in 1936 and a first-hand account of a drunken wartime meeting between Stalin and Churchill. But two of the accounts really stand out for me; the first being the British appearing to bribe the Spanish to stay neutral. These files relate to British efforts to prevent Spain from entering the war on the side of the Germans, and to stimulate resistance in Spain should the country be invaded. The British ambassador in Madrid at the time, Sir Samuel Hoare, together with the Naval Attaché Captain Hillgarth, were particularly closely involved in, “ a plot to ‘give the Right Wing the sinews of war’ and to form an organisation that would be ‘pro-Spanish and antiforeign’. The plot was organised by Juan March, who had been a double agent in the First World War, and who was paid a great deal of money to influence Spanish generals, including Franco’s brother Nicholas, against joining the war on the German side. In 1941 the plans were threatened by the freezing of $10 million held in a US bank account that were to be paid to persons in Spain, using March as an intermediary for ‘political ser-
vices rendered’. In October 1941 an appeal was made, endorsed personally by Churchill, to the US Treasury to unfreeze the funds. There was considerable discussion of how much the Americans should be told, particularly since March’s activities were not always legal.” And the second is like something from a carry on film! The Archive states, “Dudley Clarke, working undercover as a correspondent for The Times, had been running a strategic deception section in the Middle East since 1940. In October 1941 he was arrested in Madrid dressed - ‘down to a brassiere’ - as a woman. He told Spanish police that he was a novelist who wished to study the reactions of men and women in the street but he told the British consul that he was taking feminine garments to a lady in Gibraltar and thought he would try them on ‘for a prank’. The police apparently considered it a ‘homosexual affair’ and released him but the Germans were convinced they were onto a ‘first class espionage incident’. Cadogan advised the Embassy in Madrid that they should ‘get him to Gibraltar by quickest means’. The file contains two photographs of him, including one in women’s dress. If you’re a historian or just curious then log on www.nationalarchives. gov.uk as a selection of the newly-released files can be viewed online. Until next week…

Recycling, upcycling - whatever turn of phrase you wish to use - second-hand shops are now trendy. And, there’s none trendier than Second to None.
The shop is based in a large main road locale and has been transformed into an all-encompassing store, with a wealth of items for sale. Located on the main road in Armeñime, next to Goya DIY. Inside, you’ll find ontrend items, affordable furniture, vintage crockery, sofas, divans and eccentricities alongside buggys, books, and even commercial kitchen items. There’s even a coffee shop next door if the browsing gets too much for you! Second to None opened its doors back in June 2010 and has proved to be a successful business right from the beginning. Owner Dave Sherratt is now back in the shop on a daily basis, ably assisted by Jimmy Carlin, who helps out – especially with deliveries.
The shop is open six days a week: MondayFriday from 10am-5pm, and Saturdays from 10am-1pm. There is ample parking in the car park in the road behind the shop. (Second right pass the shop door). Second to None is well stocked and very organised, so you will find what you are looking for easily. If you’re looking for a specific item or simply want to refresh your home then it’s worth having a look. They have a “finding service”, which means they will look for items that may not
be on sale in the shop but are requested by customers. In addition, they offer a removal service. Whether it’s household, commercial or even just for one item, give them a call and they’ll be able to help. Dave told Canarian Weekly: “From now until the end of the month we have a sofa sale as we’ve got a number of beautiful sofas in stock – up to 30% off.” Among Dave’s other items is a beautiful new, ceramic dining table with six chairs and a gorgeous, comfy, darkleather sofa.
Canarian Weekly asked Dave and Jimmy about the funniest thing they’d ever received in a house clearance. Needless to say we can’t print their response, and we’ll leave it to your imagination! Why not give Dave a call on 664 497 523? If he hasn’t got what you’re looking for, he will find it because, at Second to None, they have it all! Or if you’re going to the Adeje Farmer’s Market on a Saturday pay them a visit as well, as they’re just a short distance down the road.

Norwegian Airlines new base in south Tenerife received a further boost this week with the announcement that Norwegian Airlines is to definitely establish a base at Reina Sofia airport here in the south of the island.
It will connect the island to 16 new destinations, including Gatwick. Tenerife Tourism Minister, Carlos Alonso said that the plan would result in the creation of up to 170,000 passengers annually and both directly and indirectly, 1,600 new jobs. Alonso (pictured) said the new services were expected to generate as much as 29 million euros of extra revenue for the island in the first full year of operation
ife and an expected 39 weekly flights linking several Nordic cities, as well as the UK and Germany. Included are connections to Stockholm and Goteborg in Sweden, Oslo, Trondheim, Bergen and Rygge in Norway, Copenhagen and Aalborg in Denmark and Helsinki and Oulu in Finland. The routes also will link the island with Hamburg, Cologne and Munich in Germany and London Gatwick. Last year the island received 460,000 Nordic visitors their average age was 52 years of age (5 years more than other visitors). Their income amounts to 66,000 euros, almost 15,000 euros more than the average total number of tourists to Tenerife.

EU-turn on olive oil
A number of weeks ago, there was a story floating around stating that the EU was going to ban refillable olive oil jugs; the type on every Spanish restaurant table here in Tenerife.
The EU has realised the error of its ways and decided to drop plans to ban restaurants from using refillable jugs and bowls of olive oil, after drawing consumer criticism and even ridicule. The policy would have
meant that restaurants would only have been able to serve olive oil in tamper-proof packaging, labelled to EU standards, as of 2014. The move had been aimed at avoiding “consumers being tricked”, Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos said. “I have seen and heard strong views expressed by consumers,” he told reporters. “As a consequence I am withdrawing the proposition.” Meanwhile, Dutch PM Mark Rutte called the ban “too bizarre for words”. He added:
24th May - 30th May 2013
“I think it is incomprehensible to come with this sort of proposal at a time like this.” “It will add to the burden on the hospitality industry and inspectorate. It is also bad for the environment because you cannot refill the jar and so lots of glass is wasted.” Olive oil is a frequent target of food fraud, with cheaper oils being sold in its place to unwitting consumers. The EU’s largest producers of olive oil Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy - are among those hardest hit by the economic downturn.

I N V E S T OR S from overseas who could offer jobs for people in Spain may be in line for automatic residence rights and visas.
The Government’s new legislation is aimed at encouraging multinational companies to open branches in Spain. Firms or individuals who bring a “notable socio-economic impact or important scientific or technological innovation” into the country will be able to take a short-cut to obtaining residence. And those who are selfemployed - including exisiting owners and key staff - will have their monthly Social Security contributions discounted. First, though, they must prove that they want to make “significant financial
investments and create jobs”. The new law is hoped to make Spain a more attractive place to operate for highlyqualified professionals and scientific investigators by cutting down on the usual red tape required. Employment Minister Fátima Báñez believes the legislation will benefit at least one million jobless youngsters, while companies making genuine efforts to invest in Spain will be given incentives and official recognition. Iberdrola, the private,
multi-national, electric, utility outfit, which is based in Bilbao and employs more than 31.000 staff, is one of the companies already doing so. Apart from attracting top-flight professionals and the best scientists to the country, Báñez says firms which offer apprenticeships or positions with onthe-job training, will be rewarded with incentives, such as discounts on taxes and other duties. Meanwhile, research shows that only 20% of young Spaniards working abroad in the field of science and investigation, have set their sights on returning home eventually. The remaining 80% have no intention of treading the same path. But even the 20% willing to come back have no idea when because of the paucity of openings in Spain.
Smart meter installation Endesa has over 3.5 million smart meters installed by the end of last month at residential customer premises in the regions it serves as an electricity distributor, equivalent to 30% of its overall smart meter installation programme in Spain, the company has reported. The new meters are in regions including the Canary Islands, they are operated from the remote management operations centre, which was launched back in 2010. Endesa smart meters are based on the technology developed by Enel, which is already being successfully uti-
Page 8
lized by 34 million customers in Italy. Endesa’s smart metering plan envisages the replacement of 13 million traditional meters in the homes of the company’s residential customers (i.e. those with contracted capacity of up to 15 kW) and the creation of some 2,000 long-term jobs by 2018, which is in line with the requirements of European and Spanish legislation to replace all traditional meters with smart meters. Remote meter management is the base technology for the development of smart grids, offering solutions for the development of
smart cities, integration of distributed electricity generation systems, the incorporation of renewable energy into the grid, integration of electric vehicle recharging, as well as management of public lighting. In addition to the equipment installed at residential customer premises, Endesa is setting up concentrator devices in all its LV transformer centers. These devices use the PLC (powerline communications) protocol, which is available to the industry since 2010 via the Brussels-based, not-for-profit Meters and More association. Source metering.com

Please ease widower’s heartache THE Canarian Weekly reaches far and wide, and we have received a plea for help from a concerned daughter in Australia.
Thieves, believed to be schoolchildren, recently broke into the Abades home of 70-year-old widower Roger Scott and ransacked the property. Fortunately, little was taken except some loose change but, sadly, the intruders also made off with the box containing the ashes of his late wife, Pat. Now, his eldest daughter Debbie is obviously anxious for the box to be recovered for her father’s sake. She told us: “Dad is okay in himself until he looks at the china cabinet and Mom is not there. “He does have a lovely big picture of Mom, which he kisses goodnight, but it’s not the same as having her there with him.” Roger believes youngsters are to blame because of the nature of the burglary, and they probably didn’t realise the significance of the pretty box, or read the plaque. He is not interested in catching the thieves; he just wants the box back with, hopefully, the ashes intact. So if you’ve seen it, or are aware of someone who has it, then let the Canarian Weekly know at editor@ canarianweekly.com or call 902 232 102. If you walk around the Abades area, be extra vigilant as the box may have been discarded somewhere. Roger and Pat “retired” to Tenerife more than eight years ago from Birmingham, where they raised five children and ran The Forge pub in
Digbeth. But old habits don’t fade, and they soon came out of retirement to open The Village Bar in Abades, only to put their feet up some years later. Sadly, Patricia passed away in October 2010 at the age of 69 after being diagnosed with cancer. As you can imagine, Roger was distraught because her ashes were his only solace. The light wooden box containing the ashes has three cream roses on the front and a brass plaque, with details of

Patricia Mary Scott. Debbie added: “When you have been with someone for 50 years, it is hard to be without them, and Dad has only the picture of Mum left. It would mean so much to him to get her ashes back.” If you know anything about the theft, please get in touch with Canarian Weekly. The police are not involved with the incident, and all we’re interested in is getting the ashes back to the grieving widower.

The beach of dreams for that wedding bliss IT is every couple’s dream to have their wedding ceremony on the beach, but the present law forbids them in Tenerife.
So the very next best thing is to have the ceremony at a venue which offer views of the ocean as a backdrop, with the beach within walking distance, so the happy couple can have the now-traditional photos taken. Monkey Beach Club is one such venue, ideally positioned on one of the best beaches in the South of the Island, boasting the famous sands of Playa la Troya. With views of the beautiful stretch of golden sand, La Gomera in the distance and a magnificent sunset disappearing behind the horizon, it all adds up to the ideal cocktail to make Monkey Beach Club the equivalent of Mambos in Ibiza - and simply perfect for your wedding ceremony. This Sunday (26th May), Monkey Beach
Club will be holding a wedding showcase, giving visitors the opportunity to view the newly-refurbished club, as a possible venue for wedding ceremonies. There will also be various companies showcasing their products and services. A wedding celebrant will be on hand to talk about the writing, delivering and co-ordinating your ceremony. In addition, a video company will show examples of what your wedding video could look like, along with a
photographer showing a few prints and offering a full photography service. There will also be an experienced make-up artist available, together with a hairdresser, who will be performing live demonstrations throughout the afternoon. A wedding planner will be present to discuss your requirements - and the importance of having a planner - along with a cake designer and manufacturer, specialising in all the latest sugarcraft techniques.
And, of course, the list would not be complete without bridalwear, so that brides-to-be will be able to view some sample dresses modelled on the day. The wedding showcase starts at 4pm and finishes at 8pm, giving plenty of time for people to come and chat about what they could have for their perfect day. So make a date for the Monkey Beach on Sunday. The organisers and everyone connected to the show will be delighted to see you there!

The Children’s Charity has raised more than £3 million since 2009, and its overseas ventures, include: *Building a school in Mexico *Providing funds in Kenya for a children’s eye hospital *Introducing air-conditioning and heating into schools in Turkey *Helping street orphans. in Goa And in the UK, the charity raised enough money to build a children’s ward in King’s College Hospital in London, and provide it with brand-new equipment. All the projects men-
tioned were nominated by employees or by Thomas Cook customers. A spokesperson for the Thomas Cook Children’s Charity said: “With your help and support on Sunday, we can all make a difference, and make dreams come true for sick and disadvantage children in the UK and overseas. “So all I ask each and every one of you to do is come along and support us at Leonardo’s, dig deep and remember the children. “Our aim is to raise at least 1,000 euros, so let’s have an amazing day. We trust we are going to see you Sunday.”

Teachers show their mettle as tornado ravages schools
10 children and 14 adults die when twister devastates Oklahoma suburb COUR A G E OU S teachers saved the lives of pupils during this week’s devastating tornado in Oklahoma.
Rescuers say they are “98% sure” they won’t find any more survivors in the aftermath of the massive twister, which destroyed the suburb of Moore, killing 24 people - 10 children - and leaving over 350 others injured. Residents have been allowed back to the neighbourhood, and President Barack Obama will add his support to the people of Moore by travelling there on Sunday. About 4,000 insurance claims, estimated to total over $2 billion
(around £132m), have so far been filed so far, said the Oklahoma Insurance Department. And, as the search effort wound down, students and their parents recounted stories of the bravery of teachers amid the carnage. One woman shielded schoolchildren from falling debris by lying on top of the youngsters, while another took an eight-year-old under her arms and held him down until the tornado passed. Two schools were directly hit by the tornado, Plaza Towers Elementary School where at least seven children were killed after reportedly drowning and Briarwood Elementary, where all the children appear to
have survived. After the tornado alarm went off, students at Plaza Towers scrambled into the halls, but they did not appear safe enough. Sixth-grader Antonio Clark said a teacher

Hughes after luring them to their deaths with a bogus emergency call last September in Hattersley, Greater Manchester. And after repeatedly denying being responsible for the deaths of a father and son, the 29-year-old finally admitted his guilt during the trial at Pres-
ton Crown Court. He also agreed that he had tried to kill three more people in the pub where one murder took place. But he remains on trial because he has pleaded not guilty to another charge of attempting to murder Sharon Hark at her home in nearby Droylsden.
took him and as many other youngsters as possible and shoved them into the threestall boys’ bathroom. “We were all piled in on each other,” said the 12-year-old, while another teacher wrapped her arms around two students and held Antonio’s hand. The violent storm engulfed the area, ripping off the school’s roof, knocking down walls and destroying the playground. Antonio said the tornado sounded like a stampede of elephants, while another student likened it to an oncoming train. Antonio eventually climbed out of the pile of debris which was once his classroom. “Everybody was crying,” he added. “I was crying because I didn’t know if my family were okay.” A Plaza Tower teacher had tears in her eyes and could barely speak as she recounted the scene from her hospital bed. “We told them to get down, but there weren’t any lights on and they were already scared,” said Jennifer Doan. “I had my arms over the ones next to me and I looked up at the door and I put my head down and it just hit. “I was telling them to keep calm, and that they [rescuers] would come, but one student just kept telling me he
couldn’t breathe and that he didn’t want to die.” Rhonda Crosswhite, a 44-year-old sixth-grade teacher, shielded three children with her own body, shouting over the roaring twister that everything would be okay as debris knocked her back. “It just started coming down, so I lay on top of some of them,” she recalled. “One of my little boys kept saying ‘I love you! I love you! Please don’t die with me’.” One of the students shielded by Ms Crosswhite, fourth-grader Damian Britton, said the tornado “sounded like a train coming by”. He added: “A teacher covered us Ms Crosswhite. I told her we were fine because we were holding on to something. Then she went over to my friend Antonio and covered him. She saved our lives.” Students also went into the halls at Briarwood Elementary, but a thirdgrade teacher thought it looked unsafe, so she herded some of the children into a closet, said David Wheeler, a father of one of the students. The teacher shielded Mr Wheeler’s eightyear-old son, Gabriel, with her arms and held him down as the tornado collapsed the school roof. Mr Wheeler said: “She saved their lives by
putting them in a closet and holding their heads down.” At Plaza Towers, several students were pulled alive from under a collapsed wall and other heaps of mangled debris. Then rescue workers passed the survivors down a human chain of parents and neighbourhood volunteers. But some did not survive the twister, and the grim process of identification of the dead was beginning. Nine-year-old Ja’Nae Hornsby was confirmed dead by her father, who said her body was found in the Plaza Towers rubble. He described his daughter as a vivacious, lovable little girl who loved to play and always had a smile on her face Meanwhile, it has emerged that the two schools had not been reinforced with tornado shelters, though hundreds in Oklahoma had received extra protection. Albert Ashwood, director of the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management, said it was up to each jurisdiction to set priorities for which schools get funding for safe rooms. But he said a shelter would not necessarily have saved more lives at Plaza Towers, especially against a tornado that was the most powerful type, an EF-5 twister, with winds of at least 200mph. “When you talk about any kind of safety measures, it’s a mitigating measure,” he said. “It’s not an absolute. There’s no guarantee that everyone will be totally safe.” Meteorologists have calculated the energy released during the storm’s lifespan of almost an hour. Their estimates ranged from eight times to more than 600 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb, with more experts at the high end.

Air girl’s cocaine charge Long-serving star of Emmerdale is dead EMMERDALE veteran Richard Thorp, who played Alan Turner for over 30 years, has died at the age of 81.
AN airline stewardess has been charged with attempting to import a Class A drug into Heathrow.
The 37-year-old woman, Temitayo Daramola, appeared on Wednesday
before Uxbridge magistrates in west London and was remanded in custody until her next court appearance, on 4th June. A second crew member arrested at the same time as Ms Daramola on Monday has been released. The arrests followed the discovery and sei-

zure of around six kilos of cocaine at Heathrow. Border Force officers discovered the drugs on a bus, which transported air crew following a flight from Lagos to London by Nigerian carrier Arik Air. The cocaine, if cut and sold on UK streets, was estimated to be worth around £600,000.
Thorp, who made his debut on Emmerdale in March 1982, was the soap’s longest serving cast member. He also appeared in such feature films as The Dam Busters, The Barretts of Wimpole Street and There’s Always a Thursday. Kate Oates, who produces the ITV series, said: “Richard’s death is a sad loss to Emmerdale, of which he was at the heart for so many wonderful years. “Richard had a brilliant sense of humour and he will be missed by every single member of
our production, whose lives he touched.” A statement issued by Emmerdale paid tribute to the star, saying: “On behalf of the cast, crew and production team at Emmerdale, we are extremely sad to hear of Richard’s death. “A pillar of the show,
he will be greatly missed around the Emmerdale studios, but will forever live on in all the wonderful memories we all have of him. “Richard was a true professional and a complete gentleman. His charm, wit and effortless grace will be sorely missed.”

Irishman is charged with 1982 Hyde Park murders ALLEGED terrorist John Downey was arrested on Wednesday and charged with murdering four soldiers nearly 31 years ago.
The 61-year-old, from Donegal in the Republic of Ireland, is accused of detonating a nail bomb in Hyde Park on July 20, 1982, which killed the four men, who were serving with the Blues and Royals regiment. It was the first of two explosions which killed a total of 11 soldiers and seven army horses. A second bomb, set off two hours later, killed seven military bandsmen. The Provisional IRA claimed responsibility for both attacks. The Crown
Prosecution Service’s Sue Hemming, Head of Special Crime and C o u n t e r -Te r r o r i s m , said: “The Metropolitan Police Service has been investigating the explosion. We have reviewed the evidence gathered and authorised them to charge John Anthony Downey. “He has been charged with the murders of Roy John Bright, Dennis Richard Anthony Daly, Simon Andrew Tipper and Geoffrey Vernon Young. He has also been charged with intending to cause an explosion likely to endanger life.” She added: “We have determined that there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction, and that these charges are in the public interest.” Downey was charged at Westminster Magistrates Court

during a brief appearance. He was remanded in custody and will appear at the Old Bailey today (Friday). Sinn Féin Assembly member Gerry Kelly said: “John Downey is a member of Sinn Féin [the IRA’s peace wing] and a long-time supporter of the Peace Process. “The decision to arrest and charge him in relation to IRA activities in the early 1980s is vindictive, unnecessary and unhelpful. It will cause anger within the Republican community. “Clearly, if John Downey had been arrested and convicted previously, he would have been released under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement. “This development represents bad faith
and a departure from what was previously agreed by both governments. John Downey needs to be released and allowed to return home to his family.” The bomb was detonated as the mounted soldiers paraded through Hyde Park. Three of the soldiers were killed instantly, a fourth died later in hospital. Shrapnel and nails sprayed into a crowd of spectators, causing numerous injuries. Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister at the time, said in the aftermath of the attack: “These callous and cowardly crimes have been committed by evil, brutal men who know nothing of democracy. We shall not rest until they are brought to justice.” The Hyde Park bomb
came just over a year after IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands died in the Maze Prison. Northern Ireland electrician Gilbert “Danny” McNamee was charged with making the Hyde Park bomb and jailed for
25 years in 1987. He served 12 years before being freed under the terms of the Good Friday peace deal. And his conviction was quashed at the High Court in 1998 following a high-profile campaign by celebrities such as Eddie Izzard.

Our great give-away WE told you in March about our large donation of dog food which was returned, unused, from the Fasnia refuge.
So we gave it away to more needy refuges on the Island. We actually added to the 135 sacks and made it 300, which amounted to 6,000 kilos. It was donated on a ratio basis, determined by the number of dogs housed in those refuges. We also gave muchneeded food to organisations and private people who foster animals at home, like Animal Help and Sano y Asalvo. The largest refuge on the Island is Adepac in El Sauzal, so they took the lion’s share of 139 sacks. Another 28 sacks went to Adanca Candelaria, 21 to K9, and 18 to Esperanza de Sur. Other beneficiaries were Animal help and Sano y Asalvo (35 sacks plus food for their rescue turtles!), MADAT (11
sacks), San Francisco de los Animales (7 sacks), Mirna de Arico (23), Dingo Dogs (5), Candy Raya (6), Guaza Mountain dogs (2) and the rest to independent foster carers. We also bought 100 euros of specialist food for the dogs with Judith Noble in the Santiago del Teide branch of San Francisco. We sincerely hope that the donations made a little difference

to those who received them, and eased the financial burden somewhat. For the love of Rose… Remember Rose, the little dog tied up and abandoned on the Los Cristianos seafront in January, with a sign saying: “I am on the street, please take me
with you?” At 10 years old she was very ill, and years of poor diet had left her with terrible teeth, cholesterol and a bad heart. However, with veterinary treatment and TLC from Live Arico’s Siobhan, Rose has found her forever home with a lady called Rachel, and she is
quite the princess now. Rose has had her final check-up and she is a lot healthier and more active. She remains on her low-calorie diet, with a personalised toothbrush and imported doggie toothpaste for her sensitive teeth. Live Arico will remain responsible for the future vet care of Rose as her health and age went against her, but she is
much loved where she is, and last week managed the walk from Mare Verde down to the beach without having to be carried. A total of 465 euros was donated for Rose’s care, and special thanks go to Vanessa Cloutt and the customers of Lorraine Dunlop and Studio 5’s Andrea for providing the bulk of this. A total of 211 euros was spent on Rose, so many others were helped with the extra money, including: Mutley and Smokey (PetsAtHome foster dogs), Roxi (a Guaza mountain pup), some feral kittens and their mother, Lady (PetsAtHome dog adopted by Vanessa Cloutt), an injured male feral cat, and Sebastian, the Arona Lifeguards’ dog. Alberto’s Final glory dream IT was obvious from the song choices that the penultimate heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke, at Dreamers Bar in Los Cristianos, would be really tight.
Roscoe, from Oasis Fm’s Breakfast Show, hosted the event, and the judging panel comprised Dreamers’ compere Angela Minty, who was dubbed “Angie Boyle” by Roscoe after singing I Dreamed A Dream during the interval period, Steve, one of the bar’s partners who, thankfully didn’t get up to sing, and Oasis Fm’s weekend lunchtime host Jamie Drew. The format differed slightly from previous heats because there were a few “no shows” from people who had registered to sing but, for whatever reason,
Page 16
could not make it. So, all singers were asked to sing twice over two rounds, with the same judging criteria that applies to the normal TLK format, producing a first, second and third place. The standard was again very high and the audience were thoroughly entertained from start to finish. A diverse set of songs from the competitors made judging difficult, and first and second places were separated by one point only. The final three were also quite stark in contrast with Bobby Webber, the most mature contestant in the heat (and probably the whole competition), coming third. He produced two engaging performances of Luther Vandross’ Dance With My Father and the Bee Gees’ I Started A Joke. Cassie Kemp, who
Tenerife Loves Karaoke
came second, was the youngest in the heat and again, probably the youngest in the whole competition. She sang Jessie J’s Price Tag and Birdy’s Skinny Love. Alberto Andrades, a finalist from last year’s
competition, won the heat with Michael Buble’s version of the Sinatra classic That’s Life and Mariah Carey’s One Sweet Day. All the contestants were fabulous sports, and all knew and respected their
fellow- competitors’ performances. So, all in all, another great show for TLK, and another step closer to the Grand Final at Showtime, Las Americas, next Saturday (1st June). And there’s FREE entry for those wishing to attend an event that
always offers first-class entertainment and a superb night out, with this year’s winner going home with a 1,000-euro cash prize. Doors open at 8pm, with the show starting an hour later, and there are no table reservations, so get there early!

Kids just monkey around with the San Miguel Lions SAN Miguel Lions Club completed their annual holiday for disadvantaged UK children and their carers on Saturday.
That’s when they waved goodbye to the last family, but, as Lions President Ralph Solomon said: “It seems like only yesterday that we were welcoming them at the airport, with families arriving on 10th and 11th of May.” The group’s first excursion was to the Monkey Park - nobody was kept in! - and the half-day trip, on the first Saturday, was enjoyed by all. Tuesday saw them all at Agua Park and although the weather wasn’t too kind, at least no one got burnt. They all had great fun and loved the dolphin show. On the Thursday, they
really went to town and had a super, full day at Loro Park. “We managed to get everyone back for
dinner and, with our Club members joining in, we had a fantastic, festive evening,” said Ralph. “Now, we start
all over again raising funds within the local community for our 2014 Disadvantaged Children’s Holiday
Project.” The President added: “Our special thanks to everyone who helped make this year’s project a great success,
especially all those who supported all our charity events, and to the Loro Park, Monkey Park and Agua Park for making it all possible.” San Miguel Lions hold their next fund-raiser on Friday 7th June with their monthly Auction Night at Amadors Kiosco Bar, Costa del Silencio, from 7.30pm promptly. Then follows the Club’s annual President Night on 29th June, with Ralph handing over the reins to new President Nan McCluskey. But Ralph will still be around, larger than life as ever, in his continuing role of Entertainment Secretary, dreaming up more schemes to get the cash rolling in. For more information on any of the Club’s projects or events, call in to their Charity Shop in Costa del Silencio, or simply look them up on FACEBOOK.
Granadilla continuing to back its local refuge GRANADILLA Council has renewed its agreement with Accion del Sol and will continue to have stray dogs sent to the refuge. Security Councillor Guacimara González says the Town Hall is extremely conscious of the
Accion del Sol need to solve the social problems generated by abandoned dogs. She also stresses that officials are aware that the refuge offers the best veterinary care, food, accommodation and the chance of a new adoption here or in Germany. The Council has a financial budget in place and it will be responsible, via Protection Civil, for the collection of the dogs and ensuring their safe arrival to the refuge. In addition, this system is important because it means the council can monitor the animals and
compile a census in compliance with municipal regulations. Accion del Sol has seen a big influx of puppies coming into the refuge, so please castrate or sterilise your pet to avoid unwanted puppies. And do come and see the many pups at the refuge, who are all looking for loving new homes. If you would like to adopt a puppy or a fullygrown dog, come along to the Granadilla-based refuge, by the windmills off the TF-1, which is open Monday-Friday (36pm), or call 922 778 630 for more information.

Travel insurance behind the times A Which? investigation has revealed that travel insurance policies have failed to move with the times, providing inadequate cover for the full costs of lost or stolen valuables abroad and potentially leaving holidaymakers hundreds of pounds out of pocket. Their research shows that many travel insurers have not updated their policies for years leaving cover inadequate to replace now everyday expensive gadgets and valuables, like mobile smartphones, tablet computers, watches and cameras. Standard policies from 20 of the largest travel insurance companies were researched and compared, the limits insurers set to cover the cost of replacing one item (single item limit),
as well as the overall valuables limit that you can take abroad with you. They found that nearly all had set unrealistically low limits on what people could claim back, especially once the excess had been deducted. More than half (52%) of Which? members say they take their smartphone on holiday with them but they found you could be up to £375 out of pocket if your iPhone5 was stolen. They also discovered that if your iPhone, iPad and valuable watch were stolen from your hotel room you could end up with a bill of £1,160 to replace the items. The investigation revealed: · All the companies looked at had a single item limit for
valuables on their standard policies of only £300 or less, with four companies (Axa, Columbus Direct, Insure & Go and Virgin Money) having a limit of only £200; · Three quarters (15 out of the 20) set the overall valuables limit at only £400 or less, with two companies (Insure & Go and Virgin Money) with overall limits of just £200. Which? Members estimated the average value of their laptops at £671, iPads at £428 and smartphones at £372; · Nearly all of the companies (19 out of 20) had an excess fee of at least £50, the highest was £100 from Barclays. Travel insurers told Which? that consumers could find greater cover for their valuables when travelling abroad via their home insurance
instead. The findings come as the Financial Conduct Authority announces a review of the travel insurance market. Which? executive director Richard Lloyd said: “Travel insurance has not kept pace with the changing times. Insurers should raise the outdated limits for everyday items like smartphones and laptops or, at the very least, always clearly offer the option of cover at a higher premium. It’s not good enough to expect people to use their home insurance policy to pick up the tab. “To avoid a nasty surprise, travellers should shop around and read the small print or they could find themselves seriously out of pocket.”

This year marks the 30th anniversary of a musical phenomenon that’s become the compendium to everyone’s musical growing-up. Currently on its 84th edition, Now That’s What I Call Music! is one of the British pop music’s biggest success stories. Since the first ever Now was rolled out for Christmas 1983 with its delicious mix of Phil Collins, Kajagoogoo, Culture Club and Howard Jones, the series has gone on to sell more than 100 million records in the UK alone. For the first time ever on TV, this fast-paced and witty documentary special for ITV will tell the fascinating story of how Now grew from a one-off punt by Virgin Records and EMI to become the most enduring brand in pop music. We’ll find out how compilation albums began life with poor quality record releases from Pickwick, K-Tel and Ronco before Now came on the scene; we’ll hear how the iconic moniker Now That’s What I Call Music began life with a pig and a chicken; and learn about those artists who vied to be Disc One Track One, and those who refused to appear on Now altogether. We’ll hear from those who created it, the artists who appeared on it, and from some well-known faces who went out and bought it. With contributions from Sir Richard Branson, Dermot O’Leary, Dom Joly, Mark Wright, Jason Donovan, Limahl, Pete Waterman, Brian McFadden, Liz McClarnon, Gordon Smart and many others, this is going to be a must-see for all music fans.

Nicholas Crane travels across eight maps that changed the face of Britain. After getting lost in London using a map that hadn't been updated since 1918, Phyllis Pearsall decided to map the whole of London herself. She claimed to have set out at 5am each day and worked 18 hours a day, walking all 23,000 of London's streets. Her map, the London A-Z, was completed in 1936 and has been one of the most successful maps of all time. Nick tries to follow Mrs P's trail.

Nick Crane leads a journey around the wildest shores of the British Isles to explore dramatic untold stories of peril from the seas. Nick tells the astonishing tale of the Great Storm of 1703, the most devastating weather event ever to hit southern Britain, when lethal winds whipped in from the Atlantic to claim the lives of one in five seamen of the Royal Navy. On the tiny Scottish island of Tiree, Dick Strawbridge reveals a remarkable story from the Second World War of how the timing of the D-Day landings was determined by the heroism of RAF weather forecasters, flying hazardous missions far out into the storms of the Atlantic. Poet and storyteller Ian McMillan, uncovers the forgotten story of another shipwreck which held Britain transfixed at the outbreak of the First World War. For two terrible days in 1914 more than 200 victims aboard the hospital ship Rohilla fought for their lives within sight of the Yorkshire fishing port of Whitby.

The Voice UK BBC1, 20.00
For the past couple of weeks The Voice UK has been dodging around time slots to avoid being blown to bits by the ratings howitzer that is Britain’s Got Talent, first going earlier and then last week trying the later slot of 8.20pm. For the penultimate of the chair-turning blind auditions it seems to have compromised. The coaches won’t be turning their backs on the acts for much longer as it’s the penultimate week of blind auditions. At the end of last week, Jessie J had a team of eight, while her male competitors had each amassed seven acts. However, there is still some way to go, so until they all have the 12 singers they require, expect more wise words from Jessie J, name dropping from Tom Jones, working the audience from Danny O’Donoghue and crazy talk from Will.i.am as the quartet compete for the attention of each singer. Holly Willoughby and Reggie Yates are backstage.

The venue first held a Grand Prix in 1929 and has evolved into one of the most iconic races on the calendar. Michael Schumacher used all his experience and knowhow in 2012 to set the fastest time. However, a five-place grid penalty held over from the previous race denied him a memorable pole in his final Monaco Grand Prix. Instead that honour went to Mark Webber, who edged out Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. Ben Edwards provides the commentary.

Yet Alice discovers that for woolly rhinos and woolly mammoths, the Ice Age created a bounty. The Mammoth Steppe, a vast tract of land which went half way round the world, provided food all year round, for those that liked the cold. It was these mammoths that Europe's most dangerous predators hunted for their survival.

Her Majesty The Queen has a public face that’s instantly recognizable to billions, but away from the demands of royal duty, her private passion is for the world of horses. This one-off special documentary charts The Queen’s enduring relationship with horses and an astonishing 65-year career as one of Britain’s leading breeders. Presented by Clare Balding - whose grandfather, father, and brother have all trained the Queen’s horses – the film gains privileged behind-thescenes access to The Queen as she pursues her dream: to breed the ultimate racehorse. There is an ancient connection between Royalty and horses, and monarchs have bred horses for hundreds of years, but none with the dedication of the current Queen. She is one of the most respected breeders in Britain, with an especially successful track-record of producing world-class race horses: she’s bred the winners of over 1,600 races. Over the course of one spring season – from the births of foals at Sandringham, where every royal thoroughbred is born, to the thrill of race day at Newbury – the film reveals The Queen’s expertise and close personal involvement in producing top-class racehorses, as well as her work to preserve the native pony breeds of Britain. With exclusive behind-the-scenes access, we see The Queen as she interacts with her newborn foals – whom she personally names – and inspects her horses in training. Through new interviews with The Princess Royal, Zara Phillips and cousin and childhood friend Margaret Rhodes, coupled with archive footage and photographs, we learn how the young Princess Elizabeth’s fascination with horses grew, and how her passion has been passed down to her daughter and granddaughter. We meet stud managers, stud grooms, advisors and trainers including ‘Horse Whisperer’ Monty Roberts as well as jockey Hayley Turner, who reveal what it’s like working and racing for The Queen, and how she has often embraced an open-minded approach to training and treatment. Screening in the run up to the 60th anniversary of The Queen’s Coronation, the film tells the full story of Her Majesty’s own lifelong passion, from receiving her first pony for her fourth birthday, to the present day, when aged 87, she still rides whenever she gets the chance, revealing an intimate, private side that is rarely seen.

Words Of Everest ITV1, 22.35 “I suppose we go to Mount Everest because – in a word – we can’t help it. To refuse the adventure is to run the risk of drying up like a pea in its shell.” George Mallory When Edmund Hillary reached the summit of Everest on 29th May 1953, his thoughts turned to a previous failed attempt made 29 years earlier, which remained shrouded in mystery. Marking the 60th anniversary of Hillary’s successful expedition, which was attempted as Coronation fever took hold in the lead up to the crowning of Queen Elizabeth II, a brand new documentary from ITV’s award-winning ‘Words of…’ strand brings to life the two stories, intertwined and retold side-by-side. After Britain lost the race to both Poles, the word’s highest peak, Mount Everest was seen as the greatest remaining challenge on Earth. In 1924, intrepid British climbers, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine disappeared after being spotted just 800 yards from the summit. Twenty-nine years later, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay approached the same summit after a long and arduous journey, determined to claim their prize of being the first explorers to conquer the mountain. The stories of these two expeditions are retold using the climbers’ own diaries and private letters read by actors including John Hannah, Jason Flemyng, Freddie Fox and Stephen Campbell Moore. Their personal perspectives, delivered straight to camera by the cast, along with original archive film and pictures plus some reconstruction, provide a vivid insight into the motivations of the key figures, the decisions and sacrifices they made and the challenges they faced, as well as the profound emotional peaks and troughs they experienced in making their attempts to conquer Everest.

David Attenborough narrates the final episode in the documentary series that shows our planet in all its glory. He looks at the largest of all habitats - the ocean. From the surface to the distant abyss, it encompasses 90 per cent of all the living space on our planet. Its depths plunge to over 11 kilometres down and it hides over 30,000 immense volcanic mountains, some taller by far, than Mount Everest. Much of this vastness is a virtual desert but the creatures that do live here include the most bizarre, most powerful, and most charismatic of all: not for nothing, is it the home of the blue whale, twice the size of the largest known dinosaurs. So, from the sinister 'vampire squid from hell' glowering in the depths, to the scintillating attacks of one hundred sabre billed sailfish speeding at the surface, explore the alien world of the open ocean in the safety of your living room.

W C choice 24 Hours in A&E Channel 4, 21.00 This week’s 24 Hours in A&E, the RTS award-winning series filmed at King’s College Hospital in south London, is about living life to the full and not looking back. 47-year-old Gary was on his motorcycle when he had a head on collision with a car. The single father of two is a code red trauma and is being flown fifty miles to King’s by air ambulance. He’s on life support with serious head, chest and limb injuries and has been put in a medically-induced coma to reduce the risk of brain damage. A&E consultant Chris is leading a trauma team of twenty and her immediate concern is keeping Gary alive: “You’re thinking what will kill him first…you’re always thinking of the chances of survival,” she says. “You’re wondering what the impact speed was, whether the patient was thrown a distance, whether they hit the windscreen, what other objects they could have hit when they were thrown off.” In minors, 69-year-old charmer Steve has a fishbone stuck in his finger. It happened while he was preparing supper for a female friend. “I was showing off my skills in cooking fish,” he says. “I got somewhat distracted by her beauty, I just got complacent and that’s when it happened.” His fear of pain and needles make it a challenge for the nurse to anaesthetize his finger and remove the bone.

Documentary series tracing the development of Britain's railways. In the late 1830s the railways arrived in London and linked the capital to Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester. This was the start of a truly national network and one of the greatest civil engineering projects in history. The railways triggered a mania across Britain. Railway tycoons like Samuel Morton Peto and George Hudson made and lost fortunes as the stock markets boomed. But the bubble burst in 1847 and shares plummeted.
Britain's Stone Age Tsunami Channel 4, 20:00
Tony Robinson reveals astonishing new evidence that shows how, 8000 years ago, a huge tsunami swamped the east coast of Britain. The new research also explains the tsunami's cause, and transforms our understanding of the people whose lives it devastated. Like recent tsunamis in the Indian Ocean and Japan, Britain's tsunami was a phenomenally destructive force, with waves as high as 10 metres in many places. But new research on the people who faced those waves has forced a new appreciation of the impact of the wave's destruction.

The King of Clubs!
By Jamie Drew IF you are a night owl when it comes to entertainment, you have more than likely visited the Starco area of Tenerife a few times.
It’s normally the place where, let’s say, the more mature person would associate with loud music and young reef revellers, partying till daylight. Not that there is anything wrong with that. At 44, I have been known to frequent the area regularly. However, as my years have increased, the hours I spend there have decreased. But it’s always nice to visit my old haunts, and on Monday I did
LAST Friday was one of those nights when I went out for a quiet drink and ended going home in the early hours.
It was nice to sit in the audience and watch
just that. It has been a while. Tramps was my first port of call, which sounds strange being first as it was nearly 4am and the place was packed to the rafters. As with most clubs, if people are not dancing, they generally congregate around the bar or the DJ booth.
Tramps, the largest venue in the Starco area, is recognised as one of the best House clubs in the whole of Spain. Clubbers travel to Tenerife from all over the UK to visit this brilliant venue. Its Main Arena opens at weekends and throughout the
summer, and it is also available for big events such as guest DJs and private parties. As well as resident DJs, Tramps sees the return of one of the biggest crowd-pleasers on 26th June - and Judge Jules, the UK’s leading House DJ never disappoints, wherever
he plays. Later this year, other celebrity DJs such as Vernon Kay and Tim Westwood will also be over for the summer line-up. The staff in Tramps are second to none, whether it’s the PRs or the bar staff. If you have a workforce which does not have a huge turn-around of employees, you can almost guarantee to be looked after by people who love their job. Happy workers equals happy customers which, in turn, creates the memories for the clubbing faithful and holiday-makers, who have built the reputation of Tramps as the King Of Clubs. These guys pictured are two of the longeststanding members of staff, and they are living the dream as Tramps’ barmen, yet a lot of people think it’s easy working behind a bar in a venue like this.
Random Friday nights Paul Lee as Meatloaf in Fañabe’s First and Last Show Bar. Paul has an immense voice and handles Meatloaf’s power ballads with ease. He also throws
Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma - in the original key, I might add - into his excellent show, which features all the big hits. And he really does do it so well. Also at the venue were Helena Campbell and Shiel Campbell, pictured here with
Congratulations: order of the day
MOST night owls will have not only visited Tramps but would have almost certainly been into Rags as well. And, more than likely, they will have floated between the two places during the night. You may be familiar with Billy Blanco, resident DJ in Rags. Well today, congratulations are in order because Billy is getting married. On behalf of the Canarian Weekly team and, I’m sure, all of the friends he has made through his job, I’d like to wish him and his wife all the best. Have a great day Billy.
24th May - 30th May 2013
Brian O’Neil, enjoying Paul’s show. Shiel has been doing his Robbie Williams Show since arriving in Tenerife, but he decided recently that it was time for a change. He has put so much effort into a new show, tributing the songs of
George Michael and Wham, and I will be reviewing this in my next fortnightly column. If you are a new act on the Island and have something fresh, please email me at jamiedrewdj@gmail. com and let me know where you are working. My random Friday night ended in Papagayo Beach Club. If you have never been, then it is a must because DJ Ben Simington has the place jumping every night, playing all styles of House music. Ben is now recognised as one of the best DJs
Anton and Sam can be found on the front bar most nights, and they work until at least 7am most times. But they still manage to get up for the sunshine to maintain their healthy, tanned look. I take my hat off to all staff in venues like Tramps, who work till dawn, always with a smile and good banter. Bar staff are equally as important as DJs, comperes and cabaret acts in creating an entertaining atmosphere anywhere. Isn’t it about time Tenerife had some kind of awards like the TEAs for the bar-workers and PRs, such as the Bar staff And Worker Awards - BAWAs! Yes, that has a kind of ring to it. And let’s face it, if it were to transpire, imagine what a party that would be - for the ones not working, that is.
resident in the Canary Islands. He is often hired to work around the world, with regular trips to Singapore and New York .to DJ events. How does he fit it all in? He is also a keen surfer and is always in search of the best waves to ride in Las Americas. Papagayo squeezes class out of every aspect of the clubbing experience, with guest vocalists who work alongside Ben, gogo dancers, and even reserved areas for those who wish to experience VIP treatment at its best. Everyone who goes there says the same: Papagayo is a force to be reckoned with, and there is nothing like it here in Tenerife. I definitely recommend this venue to anyone who likes the finer things in life and, with manager Nugee at the helm and the beautiful staff, it will never fail to amaze. If you are not a night owl like me, then visit Papagayo in the afternoon and enjoy the chill-out tunes and watch the sunset behind La Gomera. Memories are made here - so make sure you go and see for yourself!

Accident prevention is best way to relieve the pressure on A&E Call-centre confusion? Just dial 0
Which? puts infuriating call centre phone systems to the test to find the best way to get through to a real person.
Call centre menus, known as Interactive Voice Response systems (IVR), are designed to channel calls to the correct department, but they often leave consumers baffled and frustrated. Consumers have said they have suffered at the hands of the telecoms market so Which tested BT, Sky, Talk Talk and Virgin Media call-centre phone systems. These are top tips to beat the call-centre: Pressing 0 – this will get Sky and Virgin Media customers straight through to an operator, *0 will put Sky customers straight through, and Virgin Media customers will need to input their number and then *0. Keypad bashing – randomly pressing a sequence of keys confuses Sky’s IVR and will put you through to a real person, as will pressing the # key twice. Free ‘WeQ4u’ app – this app keeps your place and calls you back when an operator is available, plus it saves money if you’re calling a premium rate number. However, it
doesn’t work for Sky customers. Web chat – this should get you talking to an adviser within minutes. Sky says it’s the quickest way to get an answer and BT claims an advisor will respond within 30 seconds. Email or twitter – send an email or tweet to the company with your complaint, it’s free and means you have a written record which could be useful if you have to challenge or prove something in the future. TalkTalk customers can also try the sales number which gets you speaking to a person and then ask to be transferred to customer services, and BT customers can try the same trick by calling head-office, or by using the ‘calling from overseas’ number, where they’ll need to state their account number before being put straight through to an adviser. Which? executive director Richard Lloyd said: “It is maddening to be asked to choose from a series of options by a machine when you just want to speak to a human, especially when you want to complain. Six in ten of us say we avoid using companies because of a reputation for poor customer service so firms should try harder to get it right and stop wasting their customers’ time.”

Cutting the number of people needing hospital treatment by preventing the accidents that injure them is the best way to relieve the pressure on A&E departments, says the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).
RoSPA, a charity that has championed safety for nearly 100 years, says that prioritising accident prevention within public health could drastically cut A&E attendances and waiting times. Speaking as the Health Committee took evidence on emergency services and emergency care, Errol Taylor, Ro-
SPA’s deputy chief executive, said: “There is a great deal of talk about the need to shore up A&E departments with additional staff and also about improving other parts of the health service so people can seek treatment at places other than A&E. But, surely, removing the need for treatment in the first place - by preventing the accidents that send people to hospital - is the best way to reduce the burden on A&E departments; accident prevention is relatively easy and inexpensive. “We challenge all those tasked with addressing the growing pressure on A&E to give attention to ‘prevention’ as well as ‘treatment’, which, for too long, has been the focus.” A&E attendances have doubled in the decade leading up to 2011/12, with accidents
accounting for millions of visits. Accidents also result in around 700,000 emergency hospital admissions in England each year - for people who are badly injured enough to be admitted as an inpatient. Errol Taylor said: “We know home accidents are a real problem, with young children and older people being particularly vulnerable. Home accidents have not experienced the reduction in numbers seen in occupational or road accidents over recent years. “But there is a way to reduce the burden of accidents. Being focused on information and education, accident prevention should centre on personal responsibility - helping people to look after themselves. And it isn’t ‘common sense’ - it has to be taught.” Taking published fig-
ures related to the costs of road, workplace, home and leisure accidents, it can be estimated that accidents cost UK society £150billion a year. Across the UK each year, accidents account for approximately 14,000 deaths and are the main cause of death for children, post infancy. RoSPA is campaigning to have accident prevention adopted as a public health priority by those responsible for delivering public health across England - a responsibility that now sits with local authorities. It has published The Big Book of Accident Prevention, which is available as a free download from RoSPA’s public health web pages and has been sent to every member of every health and wellbeing board in England.
Winter sales hit by icy blast R E D UC E D household budgets and Britain’s appalling winter weather have been blamed for April’s shocking retail sales.
It was the biggest monthly drop experienced in a year, and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said the volumes, including, garage fuel, fell 1.3% from the previous month. This, said the ONS, compounded the economists’ forecasts for a flat performance and, compared with a year earlier, sales rose by
much less than the estimated 0.5%. Sales of food dropped by a huge 4.1% last month, which was the worst showing in almost two years. And, not surprisingly in view of the weather, sales of barbeque food and garden furniture were particularly badly affected as the Spring season delayed its arrival alarmingly. Consumer spending accounts for 60% of gross domestic product (GDP) and it was hoped that households would begin to spend more amid signs of economic recovery and higher employment.
But the squeeze on incomes, as a result of stubborn inflation and little or no wage growth, restricted demand severely. As the ONS released the retail sales figures, so it was confirmed that Sir Mervyn King, Governor of the Bank of England, continued to support more stimulus measures to aid economic recovery at this month’s meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). But the nine-member MPC voted 6-3 against extending its programme of quantitative easing (QE) by another £25bn to a total

At the Bank’s recent news conference report on inflation, Sir Mervyn predicted GDP growth of 0.5% in the second quarter of the year, following an initial estimate of a 0.3% increase between January and March. Chelsea gnomes in need of new homes
Place your bids for Chelsea gnomes painted by celebrities including Elton John & Joanna Lumley.
An RHS Chelsea Centenary Appeal has been launched to raise £1m and highlight the opportunities that horticulture offers as a career. One of the appeal’s fundraising activities is an Ebay auction of gnomes painted by celebrities - Elton John, Joanna Lumley, Lily Allen, and Dame Helen Mirren to name a few. Open until the end of the show, all proceeds will go to the appeal. Alan Titchmarsh, RHS vice president, officially launched the appeal. He said: “A survey of 1,000 people last year revealed that 70% of 18-year-olds believe horticultural careers should only be considered by people who have ‘failed academically’. Nearly 50% of under-25s think horticulture is an ‘unskilled career’. “Recent findings, which form part of ‘Horticulture Matters’, a report by the RHS and horticultural industry, highlights the extent of the skills shortage in UK horticulture. We must act now to make horticulture appeal to
young people” To support the yearlong appeal, a host of celebrities including Sir Elton John and Dame Maggie Smith have painted garden gnomes, to be auctioned on eBay during the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by M&G Investments. Other projects will include apprenticeships, creating an RHS Learning Centre at RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex and further supporting the RHS Campaign for School Gardening. This will enable schools across London, Essex and the South East to experience learning in an inspiring environment using the resources and learning opportunities for free. Learning centres at the other three RHS Gardens attract 40,000 school visits a year. The charity aims to create 15

apprenticeships in the next three years. The first four apprentice places will be launched this year. There will be two at RHS Garden Hyde Hall and two at RHS Garden Wisley. Chelsea I know readers often comment that at times the garden page isn’t Tenerife specific, but, you do have to bear in mind that many of us travel to and from the UK and some of our readers are based in the UK. So this week I’ve indulged myself, and with good reason – it’s Chelsea! Glamour and grandeur in this year’s gardens with native British plants and tones of pink steal the show at this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored my M&G Investments. While almost all gardens at this year’s show are using native British plants, three
gardens in particular are featuring this theme strongly in their design. Welcome to Yorkshire’s garden, Le Jardin de Yorkshire, seeks to highlight the natural beauty of the region’s dales by using British native plants such as Lychnis floscuculi (ragged robin), Dactylorhiza fuchsii (common spotted orchid) and Geum rivale (water avens). Its colour palette is predominantly based around those plants that would naturally occur in the wild with greens providing a backdrop for florals in a range of whites, yellows, pinks and purples. Nature and the tradition of the British landscape are again referenced as inspiration for this year’s NSPCC garden – What will we leave? Garden of Magical
Childhood - where a cherry tree creates a centre point for native wildflowers including Capsella bursapastoris (shepherd’s purse), Silene dioica (red campion) and Humulus lupulus (hop) paired with a few colourful perennials. The Motor Neurone Disease - Hebridean Weaver’s Garden has also incorporated Capsella bursapastoris (shepherd’s purse), Silene dioica (red campion) and Humulus lupulus (hop) amongst other natives within their planting. Designers Jackie Setchfield and Martin Anderson are working with growers, British Wild Flower Plants, to recreate the rustic feel of the Outer Hebrides within the heart of Chelsea. Many other gardens are using floral selections mixed with airy grasses and frothy umbels, favouring the more natural appearance of accents of colour over more expansive colour pallets. Pink is this year’s colour
of choice, showcased through plants such as Dactylorhiza, Armeria maritima and Geranium Sanguibneum. Rhododendrons, another British native, were for a few years noticeably absent until designer Chris Beardshaw used them in his design for Furzey Gardens last year and this year they’re back taking pride of place in Delancy’s East Village Garden and Kate Gould’s The Wasteland. Digitalis Purpurea, better known as foxglove, and Anthriscus Sylvestris, common cow parsley, are both varieties which you would maybe not expect to appear at Chelsea, yet both feature predominantly in this year’s show. These and other native plants will be encouraging British wildlife onto this year’s show gardens, an approach very much in line with the RHS Plants for Bugs research and the current Wildflower campaign.

BEWARE OF THE TOXIC STYLISTS... By Carl from Robot
MY salon is called ROBOT – but I am not one, even though I find myself repeating the same things over and over.
And I still see the same problems turning up at the salon door: HAIR DAMAGE! Once every three months, I’d say, I see some poor client who has half or more of her hair missing because of the abuse carried out by another hairstylist. I have to stand there and watch her fill up with tears as I say she will need to have most of her hair removed and start the long process of growing it back. But has she actually brought this upon herself? The answer is a positive NO! Again, the damage has been caused with the killer product known as bleach. In the wrong hands and with an inexperienced stylist, bleach can destroy your hair in one salon visit. Overlapping the hair on to previouslycoloured hair WILL break it off. Using a bleach which is too strong will not only break your hair off but also burn your scalp, resulting in open sores and scabs, And putting heat on to bleach accelerates the power of it dissolving
Page 40
the hair. Need I go on? Yet dealing with new clients who have whole sections of their hair missing, and the traumas they suffer, can be so easily prevented. Watch you stylists as they foil your hair. Are they leaving the previously- coloured hair free of colour and out of the foil packet? If not, your colour is being overlapped which, thus, results in breakage. Is the colour leaving your head sore and flakey? If so, it could be too strong, which also results in breakage. It’s not rocket science
but basic colouring methods, which we are taught in college, Yet some just choose to forget or disregard their client’s hair. Look at the two examples pictured - hair strands under the microscope. The smooth one is how your hair should look, and the other one is what happens to it when it is abused - by you or, worse still, by your stylist. Keep your eye on what they do during your next salon visit, .or you might be the next one sitting in my chair, mopping up tears with a Kleenex!
New time zone for depression PEOPLE suffering depression are totally out of sync with the rest of the world because their body clocks are broken.
That’s the theory put forward in a new study, which maintains that the discovery of disrupted body clocks in the brains of people with depression is the first link found between the condition and changes in the circadian rhythm (a person’s regular biological clock). It is hoped that this finding will enable better, more advanced treatments, to be developed. Every cell in the human body runs on a 24-hour clock, tuned to the night-day, lightdark cycles in nature. The brain acts as a timekeeper, keeping this cellular clock in sync with the outside world so that it can govern our appetite, sleep and moods. However, this research shows that the clock may be broken in the brains of people with depression - even at the level of the gene activity inside their brain cells. The discovery, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, was made by studying differences in the donated brains of people who had been depressed and those who had not.
The research also revealed a previouslyunknown, daily rhythm to the activity of many genes across many areas of the brain, which has highlighted the sense of how crucial the body’s clock is to a person’s well-being. In a normal brain, the pattern of gene activity at a given time of the day is so distinctive that the authors could use it to estimate, accurately, the hour of death of the brain donor. However, in severelydepressed patients, the circadian clock was so disrupted that a patient’s “day” pattern of gene activity could appear to be a “night” pattern, and vice-versa. When the team tried to do the same in the brains of 34 depressed people, the gene activity was off by hours. The cells looked as if it were an entirely different time of day. Lead author Dr Jun Li, an assistant professor in the Department
of Human Genetics at the University of Michigan Medical School, described how the approach was a real eye-opener to his researchers, They looked at 12,000 gene transcripts, isolated from six regions of 55 brains from people who did not have depression. This provided a detailed understanding of how gene activity varied throughout the day in the brain regions studied. Dr Li said: “There really was a moment of discovery. It was when we realised that many of the genes that show 24-hour cycles in the normal individuals were well-known circadian rhythm genes - and when we saw that the people with depression were not synchronised to the usual solar day in terms of this gene activity. “It’s as if they were living in a different time zone than the one they died in.” Depression affects one in 10 adults in the UK at any one time, and it is slightly more common in women. At any one time, one in 20 people in the UK will be experiencing severe depression. The main symptoms are lasting feelings of sadness and hopelessness, losing interest in things you used to enjoy and feeling tearful. There can also be physical symptoms such as fatigue, sleeping badly, having no appetite and aches and pains.

By Val Sainsbury WOMEN who complain when their partners moan about man flu might want to sit down and take a deep breath – or a couple of aspirin.
Man flu? Poor chaps really do get to suffer
Man flu is not actually a myth, and men really do suffer when ill. Furthermore, women find it harder than them to cope with the flu virus. Statistics in Australia show women with flu
took an average of three days off work, while men made do with 2.8 sick days. And, among those ill enough to go to A&E, women had four days at home, whereas men had half a day less.
New South Wales public health physician Dr Craig Dalton said it could be that men weren’t so ill, and didn’t need as much time off work. Alternatively, they were just as ill - but able to cope better! The analysis also found women tended to be struck down with flu earlier in the winter than men. A recent study by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine backs up the argument. It found that women were more likely to complain when they
have flu, while men actually played down their symptoms. Dr Alma Adler, who ran the online survey of 5,000 people, said: ‘In the myth of man flu, people may think that men complain more, but these findings suggest otherwise. “There is no evidence we know of to show that the flu virus affects women in a different way from men to give them worse symptoms, and make them suffer more.” As part of its on-going Flu survey, LSHTM researchers asked
participants to report any symptoms, as well as rating their health score on a scale of 0 to 100. While the average health score for both sexes who said they were feeling well was 90, among those reporting “flu-like illness”, the score was worse among women. Men saying they had flu reported a health score of 60, while women averaged just 50. So next time, girls, be careful before you start wagging those fingers at your poor, sick darlings!
Diabetes: Watch waistline, or suffer the consequences! BRITAIN is heading for a major diabetes crisis, with millions unaware they are at risk from the lifethreatening illness.
Even more worrying is that the number of people with diabetes is expected to increase over the next decade. The ticking health time-bomb was exposed by new research, showing that twothirds of Britons don’t even know that having a large waistline significantly increases the chances of developing the condition. Diabetes UK said
24th May - 30th May 2013
those with a normal body mass index (BMI) but a large waist – defined as 31.5in or more for women and 35in or more for men – are most at risk from developing Type 2 diabetes. Those with the condition are at increased risk of developing associated killer conditions like heart and kidney disease, strokes and blindness. Health campaigners in the UK have been prompted to speak out amid serious concern that the NHS is lurching towards “financial meltdown” because of the “unfolding tragedy” of diabetes. The lives of almost four million Britons are already blighted by the condition, and that to-
tal is expected to rise to 6.25 million by 2035, when the cost to the economy is estimated to be £40billion. Unlike Type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune disease, Type 2 is largely driven by lifestyle and linked to obesity. There are said to be 850,000 people with Type 2 diabetes who do not know it. Studies show that sugary drinks can increase health risks, and Diabetes UK chief executive Barbara Young said: “It’s worrying that awareness of some risk factors for Type 2 diabetes is so low. “We are particularly concerned that people might think they do not have anything to worry about, just because their MBI suggests they are in the healthy weight range. “If the current rate of increase continues, the number of people with diabetes is expected to go up 700,000 by the end of the decade, with Type 2 accounting for most of this rise. “This would be a health disaster - an increase unsustainable for the NHS.” Previous studies revealed how sugary drinks can dramatically increase health risks in a similar way to alcohol abuse.

James Martin takes his in-flight meals to the greatest heights! BBC’s Saturday Kitchen chef has launched his latest Thomas Cook Airlines in-flight menu.
Celebrity chef James Martin surprised holidaymakers with a special guest appearance on board a recent Thomas Cook Airlines flight to Larnaca in Cyprus, marking the launch of his latest range of in-flight meals designed exclusively for Thomas Cook Airlines. Following the success of last year’s range of tempting dishes, the new meals are now available on Thomas Cook Airlines flights to more than 45 different destinations from UK airports. James - the popular face of BBC’s Saturday Kitchen - joined passengers and crew travelling to Cyprus to provide a meal service with a difference where, as a special treat, he helped

serve the in-flight meals as well as offer every passenger a complimentary baked Canadian blueberry and orange muffin from his new breakfast range. “I’m really thrilled to be working with Thomas Cook Airlines for the second year running and have really enjoyed meeting passengers to hear what they think
first hand,” said James. “My in-flight dishes reflect the passion I have for the food I create for my own restaurants, and feedback tells me they’re going down a treat, whether people are going off on holiday or returning home.” Starting from just £6 per meal, the latest inflight menu features well-loved, traditional dishes such as slow braised beef with bourbon glaze & baby baked potatoes, breaded chicken goujons with triple cooked chips & James’ own ketchup on the children’s menu, a twice-baked cheese souffle with roasted leeks as one of the vegetarian options and classic treacle sponge pudding and custard for dessert. Furthermore, passengers can now book in-
flight meals for inbound flights even if they did not order one for their outbound flight through their Thomas Cook or Airtours holiday representative in resort or via www.flythomascook. com “Compared to a prepacked sandwich or meal deal from the service station, our tasty meals definitely stack up as value for money” said Alison Watson, Customer Services Director for Thomas Cook Airlines. “When we asked customers what they wanted from an in-flight meal, we found that most wanted good, honest, home-cooked food after a week of dining out in restaurants every night. James’ menu is specially designed with this in mind; five star food that uses only the finest ingredients.”
The consumer watchdog discovered that Bexley, in south-east London, had six of the 10 worst postcodes studied, with the worst, DA7, having 45% of its eateries rated as lower than “generally satisfactory”, In contrast, not one of the food outlets inspected in Birmingham’s B35 area received a score below that rating. Which? studied the Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings in postcodes across England, Northern Ireland and Wales from January 2011 to March this year. And in what was a real eye-opener, it revealed wide variations between different areas and high-street chains. It found that 18% of La Tasca outlets inspected had a rating of less than “generally satisfactory”, while 13% of Little Chefs inspected had low ratings. Nearly 30% of Chicken
Cottage outlets and 26% of Dixy Chicken takeaway shops inspected were rated below “generally satisfactory”. A number of convenience store chains also had around one-fifth of their outlets inspected rated less than “generally satisfactory”, including Best-In and Best-One (22%), Costcutter (21%), Premier (21%) and Londis (20%). To their credit, however, some major chains recorded no poor scores, including Carluccio’s, Eat, Marriot Hotels, Premier Inn and Zizzi. A survey to accompany the study found that 75% of consumers would not eat at a food outlet which received a hygiene rating below “generally satisfactory”. Which? executive director Richard Lloyd said: “Our investigation shows that food hygiene is an unacceptable postcode lottery. “Diners shouldn’t be taking a risk with their health, simply by choosing the wrong area in which to eat out. “We want everywhere that serves food to the public to display their hygiene score prominently so people can make an informed choice.”

Recipe of the week TIM CHAMBERS, originally from Burnley, has lived on the Island for over 10 years. And he has been the head chef of the Surrey Arms, Paloma Beach, in Los Cristianos, for seven of those years. His favourite food is pasta, and he loves cooking his favourite carbonara - when he’s at home because it’s easy and filling for all the family. But here’s one of Tim’s favourite restaurant recipes from his personal repertoire, and he enjoys cooking this at any time of the year as the ingredients can be picked up in every season. The unusual
mixture of ingredients - New Zealand mussels, king prawns, bacon and cider sauce combines well together to form this lovely, light, fish dish, which has no formal name! Cooking time approx 10 mins (Serves 1) Ingredients ¼ medium-sized onion ½ clove of garlic 1 rasher bacon 6 king prawns 8 New Zealand mussels ½-pint of cider
Dijon mustard 1 lemon 100ml cream Salt and pepper Preparation Dice onion, garlic and bacon, and peel prawns Method Saute onion and garlic in olive oil; add the New Zealand mussels, king prawns and diced bacon. After 2-3mins, add the cider, a teaspoon of Dijon mustard, juice of the lemon and season with salt and pepper. Reduce the cider after 5-6mins, add cream, stir well and serve with salad garnish, crusty bread and butter, and top with fresh parsley and wedge of lemon. And then? Enjoy!
the UK. With more and more small breweries looking to bottle their beers both for local sales and in order to reach further markets, the traditional method of bottle conditioning – where live yeast is used to give the beer light carbonation via a secondary fermentation in the bottle – is proving a popular approach.” A sister publication to the Good Beer Guide, CAMRA’s Good Bottled Beer Guide by Jeff Evans is now available from all good retailers, and the CAMRA shop (www.camra. org.uk/shop), priced £10.99 for CAMRA members, and £12.99 for non-members. The book will be on sale throughout the Great British Beer Festival, Earls Court, London, August 13th-17th 2013. Source CAMRA

Salamanca 2 CD Tenerife 2 CD Marino 2 Guijuelo 0 THE regular season ended last Sunday with no real dramas for our sides.
CD Marino completed their campaign with another excellent home win. They have been superb since the transfer window closed and, had the league started on 1st February, they would have been fourth. It makes you wonder what would have happened if they’d started the season in any sort of form. Next year, they will aim for an immediate promotion, but without the Tenerife loanees and the outgoing President’s cash, this will be tricky. I wish them well. CDT’s draw in Salamanca was neither here nor there, but it did ensure a few more trophies. Aridane’s brace saw him finish as the section’s top goalscorer. He’s had his critics, Position

Tenerife to ward off Hospitalet challenge certainly in this column, but 25 league goals is a brilliant return. Let’s hope he continues the run over the next week or so. While Aridane is the pichichi, captain Sergio Aragoneses is the league’s Zamora. This award goes to the keeper who concedes, on average, the fewest goals. As the table shows, he let in 0.69 goals per game, comfortably ahead of his nearest rivals. These tables can be misleading, but not in Sergio’s case. He is a top-flight keeper, playing in the third tier. For me, the second best keeper is Basilio, who is down in eighth spot! Monday’s play-off draw handed Tenerife a two-legged tie with L’Hospitalet. The first leg is at the Heliodoro this Sunday (kick off 12 noon, LIVE on Oasis Fm) and club officials hope for over 13,000 to be there. Santa Cruz will be rocking, that’s for sure. It’s the dream draw as I wrote last week: THE boys from Catalonia … there is no doubt that this is the weakest section. The top five sides are Points
head and shoulders ahead of the rest, even with Villarreal’s B team in this section. L’Hospitalet have not tasted second-tier football since England won the World Cup, and to be where they are is quite an achievement. They are full of journeymen, but manager Jordi Vinyals has got them playing some good football. He had a fine playing career and he has brought the team on during his third spell at the club. They have the section’s top scorer in Cirio, and the 28-year-

old is backed up well by Bakary. He is a handful and should be playing at a higher level, as his 48 goals in three seasons demonstrates. Their free-flowing football sees them bag lots of goals, but, in a weak division, their defence is porous. They will be awkward at home, but very beatable in Santa Cruz, and Tenerife would be strong favourites against L’Hospitalet. And they are! The bookies have Tenerife odds-on to win the tie. There are no injury worries and no suspensions. It really is there for CDT to put in a strong performance, get a decent lead and, most importantly, get a clean sheet.

Unlike in league football in England, away goals count double in Spain. A 0-0 draw would be no disaster, but a lead and a clean sheet is the dream scenario. The other tie is much tougher to call. Alaves look the slight pick, but the fact that Real Jaen are home first is very interesting. As I wrote last week, their defence is mustard and again, if they don’t concede on Sunday, they will fancy their chances. Also this weekend, the sides who finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th start their play-offs. Remember, the two losers from the first-place play-off will join the six winning sides in the last eight. The ties are: Levante B v Athletic Bilbao B Lleida v Leganes Caudal v Cartagena Alcoyano v Eibar Real Oviedo v Albacete Luacena v Huracan There are some cracking match-ups, and none bigger than Real Oviedo’s tie with Albacete. Both are historically big sides in this league, and they are so similar. Both have had major financial woes and, while Oviedo are sorted, Albacete could be wound up this summer. That they have got this far is remarkable. But Oviedo, like Tenerife, could pull in over 13,000 on Sunday, and it’s hard to see them losing. Leganes should have too much for Lleida, as will Huracan at Luacena. The battle of the B teams is fascinating. Athletic have a fine youth setup, and they are long overdue a run at the second tier of Spanish football. But Levante B? For years they were just delighted to have the first team at that standard, and here they are trying to get the “stiffs” up! They are the poorest side in La Liga and it’s a real fairytale. And what about an upset? Cartagena have been the biggest spenders in this tier and were gutted to lose the top spot to Real Jaen. They face Caudal who I’ve seen play a few times this season. They are no worldbeaters, but boy, will they have a go. They have a goal in them and you may remember the five-goal thriller with Tenerife in February. I just wonder…

Good darts… we’re back! By Geoff Huxtable AFTER what seemed an eternity for keen darters all over the Island, the Oasis Fm Darts League kicked back into action last Friday. With a few new sides joining the usual suspects, 36 teams, spread across three divisions, will do battle over a mammoth, 34-
week schedule. And it promises to be the best season yet! Bar 180 A, hoping to take the mantle from the now-defunct Xtreme Sports Bar, brushed aside the Naturals with maximums from Andy and Justyn. Nathan replied with his own for the home side. An early-season 146 check-out for Palms Sports’ Mally was posted immediately on the Facebook page as
they got the better of La Caña Pirates. Within minutes, Phoenix Bar’s Mitch slammed in a 155! He and Target Army lads Mark and Steve also hit 180s in a cracking match that finished 4-4. This term, the highest check-out in each division will be sponsored by Direct Telecom to the tune of one euro per point. The Pub hit the ground running and
are early leaders after Grizzly hit a maximum during a 7-1 victory over the Playboys. Pete checked out 123 for the Ourplace lads, while James took out 86 for Scruffy Mac’s in a draw with Gaffers, who had Terry earning rave reviews and Man of the Match. The Premier League’s other match saw Ensecan take the trebles to earn a point against the Titans. Sitting proudly atop Division 1 are Bar 180 B. They thrashed Amistad 1, with Cloughie hitting a 180 along the way. “I am not the best darter, but I am in the top one,” he
proclaimed modestly. Of the top three promoted sides from last season’s Division 2, only Chipeque Pool Bar won. They beat Bar 180 C, while Emerald Lounge could only draw at home with Trap Door. Young Jack took out 96 as Gaffers B did for Naughty Nautas, and a 171 score by Betty helped Rood to a comfortable victory at Barracuda Bytes. Summerlands started off in winning fashion with a 5-3 success over Marilyns. Division 2 looks as though it will again be very competitive, four of the six matches
going down to a deciding trebles leg. Amistad 2 and Sundowners each secured their wins in the final rubber, while Bar 180 Ds did likewise to draw with new boys Tenerife Sun. Chris hit a 180 for the Hunters, but to no avail as they lost to La Caña Lancers. Phoenix Flights squeaked past the Playgirls, courtesy of a 112 finish by Joan, and new outfit Picasso’s began their darting life with a 5-3 win at The Rebels. Emerald Shamrocks’ skipper Paul checked out on 81 during the match with Amistad.
Hammers are nearly home TENERIFE Hammers A are now just two wins away from reclaiming the Oasis Fm Division One title.
They had another comfortable win on Tuesday, with Terrace Bar A their latest victims. The visitors felt they had no luck all night - something with which Jambo will surely disagree. Hammers were 5-0 ahead after a whirlwind start and were never going to throw that away, sailing home 10-2. Nearest rivals Gaffers A were also 5-0 up, but found themselves in a real match. The balls fell lovely for them as they allowed Palms A to pot just two balls in the first three frames. They forced the advantage as they took the next two frames, only for Palms A to show some real fight.
They took the next three frames and the comeback was on. But two controlled frames from Ashley and Neil got Gaffers over the line. Palms A’s defeat leaves Phoenix Potters in pole position to claim third spot, with just three matches to go. Potters were in trouble at home to Inn The Pink. The visitors were 3-1 and should really have kicked on. However, Potters grab a few frames back and, let’s just say, the ale kicked in for the Pink boys! The 8-4 win gives Potters a four-point cushion on Palms, but the sides clash in Torviscas in what will be a tasty encounter. Phoenix Knights had two wins this week, both 7-5. On Monday, they sneaked past Tenerife Hammers C and, 24 hours later, they won the Los Abrigos derby at La Cana. Hammers C did pick
up something as they drew at Toscales A on Tuesday. Peacocks A have both eyes on the Tenerife Pool Tables Plate final. But they are still in good league form, as the win over Dreamers showed. There are just two matches left in Division Two, and both titlechasers were successful this week. In fact, they both won 9-3. Leaders Exiles A were too strong for Treehouse B in Chayofa, while Next Door got
back to winning ways at Shorty’s. And the title could be decided this week. On Monday, Next Door travel to Inn The Pink and, if they lose, Exiles A can claim the title with a win at home against Bluebell B 24 hours later. Treehouse A will finish third. They guaranteed some silverware as they hammered Bluebell A 11-1. Hoppys have had a fine campaign. You have to go back to mid-Feb to find the last match

they played in that didn’t finish 6-6 or 7-5, and they secured two wins this week by the smallest margin. On Tuesday they accounted for Picasso’s and, 24 hours earlier, they won in bizarre circumstances at Bar 13. They were 6-5 when Tracey went for glory in the final frame. But Dan Fritzel was in charge and, after sinking the black, he celebrated Dennis Taylor-style. Unfortunately for the Arona Foods chief, he
still had his last red on the table! So Tracey’s victory was celebrated long into the night, and that was not the only significant female success of the week. Exiles B and Toscales B drew in Silencio, thanks to Laura beating Exiles owner Blair. TWICE! Poor old Blair Bear! Palms B whitewashed Ryan’s Bar, and James Place drew at Bluebell B in the week’s other fixtures.

Sport In Brief Tennis: French Open The shock withdrawal of No2 seed Andy Murray with on-going back problems has stunned British fans, but the Scot is determined to be fit enough for next month’s Wimbledon, where he was beaten by Roger Federer in the 2012 final. The French Open begins on Sunday in Paris and again, the key question is whether the Rafael Nadal, the “king of clay”, can become the first player in history to win a record eight men’s singles titles at Roland Garros, or whether world No1 Novak Djokovic, who beat him recently, will see him off.

It is Bayern’s third final in four years and, following defeats by Inter Milan and Chelsea, the likes of Arjen Robben (former Chelsea) and Franck Ribery will be anxious to be crowned European champions. England football shirt has German touches about it THE new England football kit, revealed on Tuesday, was instantly likened to West Germany’s outfit from the Sixties and Seventies.
New sponsor Nike opted for a simple design, with a rounded collar and navy badge. But angry fans used social media to vent their feelings. One user wrote: “The new England kit is absolutely disgusting, thought we were England not Germany.” Another posted: “Very German! We are white and red!” But former England striker Gary Lineker joked: “Smart move by @FA and @nikefootball to go slightly German with the strip. If you can’t beat ’em…” The first look of the shirt was tweeted by England and Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere, who let a pupil at The Priory, his old school, in Hitchin,
Hertfordshire, model it. Wilshere said: “This is where my dream of
playing for England started, and it’s great to be back here to see a
new generation playing with the same passion.” Nike has taken the kit back to its roots, with its traditional colours of white and dark blue to celebrate The FA’s 150th anniversary. The Three Lions crest featured in dark blue on the team’s first kit, and it now has a gold border with a gold star above, denoting England’s World Cup win, England will be seen in the new kit for the first time when they face the Republic of Ireland at Wembley next Wednesday (29th May).
Death of a wrestling legend MICK McMANUS, best known of all the wrestling stars in the Sixties and Seventies, has died at the age of 93.
He was a genuine character, who headlined big shows against such wrestlers as bitter rival Jackie Pallo in an era when millions watched the sport on television. McManus, who revelled in his nickname “The Man You Love To Hate”, made more TV appearances than any other wrestler in a career spanning more than 20 years. And he numbered such worldwide figures among his fans as The Beatles, the Duke of Edinburgh and even
Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. His death was confirmed yesterday (Thursday) by Frank Rimmer, organiser of the annual British Wrestlers Reunion. Mr Rimmer said McManus had been visited by Lord Attenborough in his last few months, but had been unwell for a while. He added: “I am deeply saddened to announce the death of the legend that was Mick McManus, who passed away at 1am this morning. “Mick never recovered from the loss of his beloved wife, Barbara, and lost the will to live, despite the loving care of the nurses at the celebrity home for retired actors, Brishing House,
where he lived out his final days. “Even the arrival of his old friend, Lord Richard Attenborough, failed to lift his spirits, and he refused all food and drink until he quietly slipped into a coma three days ago. “Mick McManus was, without doubt, through his own efforts, the greatest wrestling name the UK has ever seen - or will see again. “Even 25 years after his retirement, he retained his aura of stardom until the end.” He grew up in New Cross, South-East London, and began wrestling in 1947. In the sport’s heyday, he was notorious for pushing the rules to the limit. He won the European Middleweight Cham-
pionship in 1968 then lost it before regaining it in 1971. He then held the title twice more in the next seven years. He also held the British Middleweight and Welterweight titles. But it was for his televised bouts with Pallo, seen by millions, that he was best known. Pallo later revealed in his tell-all autobiography that the fights were completely choreographed. His fame was such that he was said to have been an influence on the work of British pop artist Peter Blake. After retiring, McManus settled into a quiet life as a public relations officer for an American telecommunications company.
