Switch on - or else! AS from tomorrow – Saturday 1st June – if you’re renting out or selling your property in Spain, including the Canary Islands, you have to provide an Energy Performance Certificate under Spanish Law, “Real Decreto 235/2013, de 5 de abril”.
And no, it’s not another obstacle the Spanish Government is introducing to hinder you renting out your property. In actual fact, in the UK there has been an obligation in place since 01.10.08 for landlords/ agents to provide an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). In the UK, once obtained, a certificate remains valid for 10 years. The Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is being introduced as part of the Kyoto Agreement, where countries are attempting to reduce their carbon footprint.
The EPC is used to establish the efficiency of properties, in an effort to reduce unnecessary carbon emissions. To obtain the EPC you need to contact a certified assessor. Your property will be scored by being given a grade, the best being ‘A’, reducing down to ‘G’; ‘A’ being extremely efficient and ‘G’ being quite inefficient. If you do make changes to your property, you can have it reassessed to gain a better score. As in the UK, the certificate is valid for 10 years. The information should be available on the Canarian Government website www.gobcan.es. Any property advertised for sale or rent via an agent, or privately, will need this certificate. What are the costs involved? Costs are going to be approximately 300 euros for an average property and, as is always the case, if you do not comply there will be a heavy fine. What does this mean for property owners? The majority of properties here have no heating and the only appliances are white
goods and, of course, air conditioning, so there is very little to be concerned about. It’s not as if you’ll have to have a whole loft insulated! Potential buyers If you are currently looking for a property to purchase, then you will need to make sure that the EPC is presented to you with the score, along with the property details. If it is not, then the contract may become void, and you may have grounds to claim compensation against the owner of the property and the estate agents. Uncorroborated reports suggest that if you currently own your
home but use it for less than four months a year, you will not need an EPC. However, if you live in it permanently, you will need to make sure you get one, especially if you’re planning on selling at some time in the future. What if I’m a landlord? If you are a landlord and already renting out your property to a fixed tenant, then you do not need to have an EPC at the moment. However, if you change tenants, you will need to ensure that you have one. If you do not get one and, thus, cannot show it to the new tenants, you again risk your con-
tract becoming void; the new tenant could sue you and the letting agents for compensation; and the government could fine you. Tenerife International Business Centre SL (TIBC) told Canarian Weekly: “The long and the short of it is that nobody is allowed to advertise/have a property for sale or for rent, unless he or she can provide the notary, purchaser or tenant with the certificate. “We are in the process of setting this up for all our clients, and we will be contacting them shortly.” The TIBC added: “If you decide to bury your
head in the sand, contracts could become void, you could be sued for compensation and, at worse, receive a fine from 3,000-6,000 euros. “Any clients who do not wish to have the certificate are advised that their property will be removed from all our advertising, as the law states that it is us, the agency, which will be fined heavily if we cannot provide the certificate for any property on our books.” Remember why you need the certificate: it’s because Spain have signed up to the Kyoto Protocol as part of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the international treaty that sets binding obligations on industrialised countries to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases. The EPC is just one small part of this. TIBC has its own inhouse architect available to assess properties. EHIC’s are accepted in Spain! Some hospitals in Spain have been refusing to accept the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as a result the European Commission has launching a legal action.
As you will be no doubt aware the EHIC entitles an EU citizen to free healthcare in a public hospital, the equivalent of the countries NHS service. The EU Commission states that a number of Spanish hospitals rejected the card and told tourists to reclaim the cost of treatment via their travel insurance, perhaps a way of making additional revenue. But a large number of
holidaymakers have reported being asked for a credit card and health insurance when attending hospital or a doctor’s surgery, and being made to pay if they have neither. Others who thought they were being treated on their EHICs found

out later that a bill had been sent to their health insurers. Some tourists have been told that if they have health insurance, their EHICs are not valid for treatment. Insurance companies offering health policies have been reporting
this matter to Brussels, as have tourists forced to pay out of their own pockets. The EC has been attempting to resolve this problem with Spain since 2010, with limited success, and the number of complaints continues to rise. Brussels have therefore decided to send a written warning to Spain giving them a deadline to comply with EU rules. The Commission, which checks compliance with EU law, has requested information on the issue from the Spanish government the first stage of an infringement procedure which could eventually result in a fine. Under the health card system, an EU citizen’s home health service is supposed to cover the cost of emergency treat-
ment abroad. So for a British citizen the UK National Health Service picks up the final bill. The European Health Insurance Card entitles you to the same state healthcare as a citizen in that country - this includes prescriptions, GP visits and hospital stays. The card can be used in any of the 27 EU countries as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. It covers emergency care as well long term conditions including kidney dialysis treatment. People are still advised to have travel insurance, as private healthcare and flights home are not covered. The Commission says it has had hundreds of such complaints concerning Spain. It says the much higher cost
of private treatment is being passed on to the travel insurance companies “or, increasingly, is being billed to the citizens directly”. When asked about the dispute with the Commission, the Spanish health ministry said the EHIC “has worked properly in Spain for years’. “The patient is the one who decides what paperwork to sign, in terms of being treated in Spain,” the ministry told the BBC, adding that “the Spanish government will investigate any cases that are presented to it”. A ministry spokeswoman said there was “no proof” for allegations that some British citizens had been pressured, or even tricked, into paying via their private travel insurance.

Arona coroner arrested A DOCTOR working as a coroner for the Arona courts was arrested by the Guardia Civil in Adeje, accused of a crime of abuse against a family member. After being released the accused, identified only as MREM, was arrested again by Adeje’s local police after a suicide attempt. He is now hospitalised in Candelaria.
Police nab smuggling gang
THE Guardia Civil yesterday (Thursday) dismantled a major international organisation dedicated to cigarette smuggling and money laundering. The joint operation is ongoing between Spain, Portugal and Belgium. Thirteen people were arrested, of whom 10 were of Spanish nationality, one British, one Irish and one Belgian. The gang appear to have been led by an Irish and Brit Expat, both residents of Marbella. They are alleged to have transported cigarettes in containers, each carrying one million packets, and Santa Cruz was just one of the ports used for shipping the consignment. They received 1.1m euros for each container.
Bon Jovi sings for nothing
ROCKERS Bon Jovi and his band have waived the fee for their June concert in Madrid because of Spain’s economic crisis. The unusually cheap tickets, with a top price of just 39 euros, have already sold out. Tickets in the UK were three times this amount for top seats. The 51-year-old star told Spain’s El Mundo newspaper that when the band were planning this summer’s European tour, Madrid had originally been left off the list of venues over fears that the event might not sell out because of the economic crisis. But they decided they would perform in the capital for free, rather than let down their Spanish fans.
The Emergency Coordination Center and Security (CECOES) 1-1-2, under the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Security of the Canary Islands, is celebrating its 15th anniversary; in that time it has received 35,387,459 calls, more than 6,000 each day, from throughout the archipelago.
This means that the Canary 1-1-2 has responded to nearly six
million people, which required the assistance of some kind of emergency service on the islands. Some incidents create multiple calls. Of the total, 3,025,458 calls were for security-related incidents, fire fighting and rescue operations both land and at sea, and more than three million calls have been health related. This data highlights the continuing work that the Canarian Emergency services have been carrying out since May 30th 1998, the day when the archipelago became part of
the European System of Emergency Care. The Canary 1-1-2 also celebrated yesterday its first year on twitter. With 22,453 followers, the profile @ 112canarias has become a benchmark of information between Islands twitter users and has the third highest number of followers in Spain, only preceded by Madrid (22,632 followers) and the security and emergency services in Catalonia (35,073 followers). Coinciding with their anniversary they have launched a campaign to raise awareness of
the proper use of emergency services, offering tweets with tips and useful information on the operation of 1-1-2. Within the technological improvement policy 1-1-2 CECOES has recently renewed its website, offering a wide range of services and incorporating new tools. www.112canarias page offers a comprehensive, modern site with the latest developments of the service, including news, events, and recent tweets. The site also reports weather warning statements and tips to follow in each case.

SAIDA Maria Prieto, the 2013 Carnival Queen candidate who was badly burned backstage during the Gala ceremony in Santa Cruz, made her first public appearance this week. And she thanked designers Carolina Padrón and Víctor Hernández Díaz Lladó (Cavilladó) for saving her life. Like Saida, they are immersed in a slow recovery following the injuries they received from the horrific incident after her dress caught fire. Carolina Hernandez said that her and Victor have not been back to work since because they cannot cope emotionally. “We are still bad, with some physical scars, and also emotional,” added Carolina. “You realise how, in a second, your life changes and you suddenly you have a hard time putting everything back on track.” As for tragic Saida, she still does not have full use of her arms, but she is continuing with her rehabilitation in Seville.

Adeje Social Services have received more than 3,500 kg of food.
It was collected as part of the Bomberos voluntarios de Adeje Open Day that was held last Saturday at the Adeje fire station; visitors were asked to bring one kilo of food in return for one tapa and a drink. Over six hundred people attended, it was so successful that they plan to repeat it. Organisers of the event expressed their thanks to everyone who participated in the event.

EU funds be used before January The President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy announced in Paris this week that he will suggest a temporary exclusion from the deficit calculation of the social security contribution discounts for the hiring of young people.
Mariano Rajoy told the President of the Republic of France, François Hollande about the proposals aimed at promoting youth employment and creating jobs that he will present at the next European Council meeting. The proposals include bringing forward “perhaps even to before the 1st of January” the 6 billion euros that the European Parliament plans to approve for the promotion of youth employment, a measure that was supported by François Hollande. Furthermore, Spain will suggest that a temporary step be taken “to enable the discounts that can be applied to social security contributions for the hiring of young people not to be counted or penalised in the Excessive Deficit Procedure”.

Smoking U-turn?
The President of the Government also told the French President that Spain will suggest that the European Investment Bank (EIB) earmarks 30 billion euros - rather than the current 10 billion euros - to financing for SMEs. He will also argue that the European Investment Bank should guarantee the export and internationalisation activity of companies. “We believe that the EIB can play a much more active, much more decisive and much clearer role in the support given to small- and mediumsized enterprises”. The President of the Government trusts that the next European Council meeting will make “clear and understandable” progress “on banking union” and that the goal of “fiscal
union, greater economic union and political union is never lost from the minds of European leaders or institutions”. However, he reiterated that the most pressing issue at this time is to offer support to smalland medium-sized enterprises, the recovery of credit and the response to youth unemployment. Mariano Rajoy said he was pleased with the outcome from the meeting with François Hollande in this regard, given their agreement on the fundamental positions to be adopted by the two leaders at the next European Council meeting. “I want the measures to be approved soon and for them to start working straight away. I am going to support all the measures that are use-
ful. What I want are useful, effective and understandable measures that can be implemented right now”. The President of the Government reiterated the Government’s commitment to meeting the deficit target because “it is not being done on a whim” but is rather a necessary factor for future growth and job creation. When asked about the regional financing issue, Mariano Rajoy explained that the Ministry of the Treasury will speak with all regional governments to present a solution that everyone can accept, “although it will be impossible for everyone to like the decision that is adopted”. “I will not impose anything and I will seek the broadest possible consensus”, he said.
Carnival 2014 Summer schools The costumes from this year’s Bollywood themed carnival have only just been put away. But, the public poll for the theme of the 2014 carnival has now been decided. And the winning theme for next year is – cartoons. In total 2,480 votes were received, a total of 1,009 were for the winning option - cartoons, which translates into 41%. In second place was the theme of the Sea, with 465 votes, followed by World Carnivals, 398, Africa 348, and the Olympics, with 261. Thus, the Carnival

2014 will be populated by cartoon characters, filtering through the various events and shows in the festival programme. Councillor responsible for the area of Fiestas, Fernando Ballesteros, said: “The theme this year includes hundreds of opportunities to dress up and allow more daring carnival representation of cartoon characters throughout Carnival”. He stressed that “this selection of theme will help companies linked to the celebrations to bring carnival into their own business.”

The Canarian Ministry of Education announced that they will be opening 183 centres this summer for more than 12,000 children.
Canarian Minister of Education, Jose Miguel Perez, said that the implementation of this initiative is “very advanced” he continued, “we have improved it with input and suggestions from all stakeholders.” Although the registration period has not yet
closed 8,215 children have already pre-registered, 12,000 places have been provided. The Canarian Employment Service (SCE) has said it will create more than 300 monitor positions. The summer school workshops will consist of arts, crafts, games, science experiments and writing stories, to meet the objectives of creating an environment with actual experiences of communication in English, while reinforcing the values of solidarity, intercultural tolerance and environmental awareness.
NOW, my intention this week is purely to reiterate a few snippets of the hundreds of items of news I’ve read. As to the conclusion, well you can make your own ending.
Fact: Spain’s unemployment figure stands at 27.2%. Fact: Many within the hospitality industry here in Tenerife blame the down-turn in their business on either “All inclusive” or the smoking regulations. Bear those statements in mind while reading the following. Las Vegas Casino giant Las Vegas Sands Corp. has chosen Madrid for a multi-billion dollar gambling resort project, which has been dubbed “EuroVegas” and will be Europe’s biggest casino and conference centre. We know about this, because it has been mooted for ages. Apparently, the £8.3bn funding is secured and we just need to wait four years for the first casino resorts to open “a la” Vegas style. “A total of 240,000 direct and indirect jobs
are expected to be created from the project, according to reports.” Brilliant! Then I read that the CEO of this mega project, Sheldon Adelson, has visited the Spanish Prime Minister this week. And reports suggest Adelson requested that gamblers be allowed to smoke inside Eurovegas - something that is against Spanish health laws. Zapatero’s socialist government introduced the no-smoking laws back in 2011, if you’d forgotten. Rajoy, from the conservative People’s party (PP), said yesterday (Thursday) that no decision had yet been made on the issue. So does this mean that 79-year-old Adelson, who is listed as the 24th richest person in the world (estimated net worth of 21.8 billion), is holding the Spanish Government to ransom, in an attempt to force a U-turn in Spanish anti-smoking laws as a desperate government seeks to kick-start the country’s economy? I’ll leave you to ponder…

The country’s fiscal authorities, Hacienda, says this varies by region - from 2,776 euros in La Rioja to 1,113 euros in Extremadura. But it means that typical inhabitants in Spain lose 1,910 euros a year more from their wage packets than they would if tax dodgers were all caught. Increases in taxes and social security have affected salaried employees the most, says tax office union GESTHA. That’s because they have no way of hiding any of their tax liabilities, unlike, say, self-employed workers or business owners. Spain has one of the highest tax levels in Europe for the middle class, GESTHA adds, and yet money-laundering costs the public coffers 90 billion euros a year, or around 20% of the GNP. The union says the “excessively-low” taxes payable in other parts of Europe should be halted. But to compensate for the multi-million-

COCKROACHES must be the biggest bugbear for residents and holiday-makers alike in Tenerife.
But there is bad news for those people who believe they have these horrible – if harmless – bugs under control by trapping them with sugar. American scientists have discovered that cockroaches have somehow been able to define that the glucose used to coat poisoned bait as bitter rather than sweet. A team from North Carolina State University have tested their theory by giving cockroaches a choice of jam or peanut butter. They then analysed the in-
sects’ taste receptors, which are similar to our taste buds. Researchers from the same team first noticed 20 years ago that some pest-controllers were failing to eradicate cockroaches from properties, because the insects were simply refusing to eat the bait. Believe it or not, there are about 4,600 species of cockroach and fewer than 30 of these are considered pests. Dr Coby Schal told
the Science journal that this new study revealed the “neural mechanism” behind this refusal. Researchers in the first part of the experiment offered the hungry cockroaches a choice of two foods - peanut butter or glucose-rich jam. “The jam contains lots of glucose, while the peanut butter has a much smaller amount,” said Dr Schal. “You can see the mu-
tant cockroaches tasting the jam and jumping back – they’re repulsed and they swarm over the peanut butter.” In the second part of the experiment, the team discovered exactly why the cockroaches reacted that way, The cockroaches were immobilised and the scientists used tiny electrodes to record the activity of taste receptors - cells which respond to flavours that are “housed” in microscopic hairs on the mouths of insects. “The cells that normally respond to bitter compounds were responding to glucose in these cockroaches, so they were perceiving glucose to be a bitter compound,” said Dr Schal.

Cheers all round for Tenerife Tigers TENERIFE Tigers’ cheerleading team, represented Spain in a “Cheer and Dance” competition in Newport and travelled back from Wales with seven trophies!
The 17-strong squad, from Callao Salvaje’s performing arts school Let’s Dance, were up against 22 teams from all over England and Wales and the girls - aged 10-16 - who displayed exceptional form, were: Ebony Zenou Phillips, Savannah Bird, Elise Sawyer, Lydia Saunders, Jordan-Louise Lydon, Luna Kennedy, Leah Burt, Harley Berry, Kotryna Usevičiūtė, Charlie Whitehouse, Charlotte Mcardle, Millie Stewart, Shawni McColgan, Nuria Molins Larripa, Elizabeth Ledesma Laker, Giada Bertocco and Captain Ellie Gipps. Elle McDowall was unable to perform but she still came to support the team! The girls won the Senior Lyrical, Junior Jazz Duo, Junior Stunt Group Level 1 and Senior Stunt Group
Level 2. They finished also second in the Senior Pom and Junior Jazz Solo and third in the Senior Cheer Dance Level 2. They were accompanied to the 19th May event by coaches Katie and Zoe, along with coach mentor Tez Shackleton and Principal Amanda Lambert, who said: “We are all thrilled with the results and we thank everyone who has supported us on this journey.” The

But we trained so hard in the weeks building up to the competition and got our reward. “Being the only overseas squad there made it even more special for us.”

Wildlife centre opens its doors to the public THE Centre for Wildlife Recovery (CRFS), in La Tahonilla, Tenerife, is opening its door to the public from Monday-Friday (3rd -7th June) to enable visitors to see the work they do.
A mixture of events will be taking place which began with the release of Loggerhead turtles at El Medano yesterday (Thursday) and will culminate with a bird of prey release at El Sauzal on 8th June. Throughout the week you can visit the centre between the hours of 11am - 2pm
and from 4-7pm. In addition there will be lectures; cetaceans (Friday June 3) birds (Wednesday, 5 June) and environmental volunteering (Monday June 6), day 4 will be a presentation of the

takes in injured wildlife found in Tenerife, both on land and at sea, which have been located by citizens, police, civil defense, diving clubs, sports clubs, fishermen, etc. The basic objective is
the rehabilitation and release of the animals returning them to the wild as soon as possible. Alongside this work it evaluates the effectiveness of treatments and track the most interesting animals once returned to the wild. During the last 15 years the Centre has rescued 28,156 animals of which 21,174 have been released. Many marine animals end up in the centre as they’ve been caught in drift nets and suffer injuries from plastic and raffia bags, ring pulls and cans which are thrown into the sea without considering the serious consequences. The loggerhead turtle is the most common reptile assisted by the centre of which 83% are returned to their natural habitat.

Les Smallman...everyone’s pal THE untimely death of Tenerife Swallow Les Smallman from a heart attack on Saturday has stunned family and friends alike.
Turismo de Tenerife promotes Island to France and Benelux Tenerife is promoting the island in France and Benelux (Luxembourg, Holland and Belgium) with the aim of increasing the number of travellers from these areas.
Tenerife Minister for Tourism, Carlos Alonso, explained that “it is a market of great interest to the island, with high growth potential, so Tenerife Turismo are working to implement new routes within different regions of France; as has been the case with the direct flight to Nantes and Bordeaux. Promotional activity is taking place in Paris, Nantes, Lyon, Toulouse and Lille. Travel agents have received training from Tenerife Turismo on the main attractions of the is-

land so that they can better sell the destination to their customers. Including 16 travel agents from Thomas Cook France participating in a familiarisation visit to Tenerife. Turismo de Tenerife has also designed a campaign with lasminute.com, one of the major travel portals. Tenerife Turismo is also developing major initiatives aimed at increasing travellers from the Benelux region, from which Tenerife received over 300,000 visitors last year. There has recently been a familiarisation trip for Avitour (network of independent travel associations of Belgium), interested in learning about the wines produced on the island routes that run through the territories Anaga Rural Park and the Isla Baja.
The 62-year-old from Bolton, Lancashire, who had spent the winter with long-standing girlfriend Sandra Gilman at his Amarilla Golf home on Pebble Beach, was driving them home to Bolton last week. They had reached Huelva, in South-West Spain, on Friday and he was taken ill the morning after having checked out of their hotel. He was taken to hospital by a concerned passer-by but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. Sandra, 49, who had been with Les for 17 years, said: “It hasn’t
really sunk in yet. He was the love of my life, my best friend, and it came as such a dreadful shock.” She was comforted by her family and flew home with them after his cremation yesterday (Thursday). Les, a retired accountant, was a real character, renowned for being tight-fisted - yet always happy to joke about it. And he was actually the kindest man of all, always willing to oblige when anything went wrong.
Everyone turned to him if the car or the telly broke down, if the washing machine packed up, the sink leaked or the vacuum cleaner started making a funny noise. He seemed to know everything about everything, without ever claiming to be an expert. And if he couldn’t fix it, he was always able to diagnose the problem. He was mocked both here and at his local in Bolton for his meanness but, in fact, he was a generous person - apart
from when it came to buying a round, of course! His best pal in Tenerife, John McCabe (pictured on the left with Les recently), who runs The Bell in Las Americas, said: “Most of the gang from the bar who knew him, played golf with him or just shared a pint, have gone home for the summer. “But I know there will be plenty of glasses raised when they come back. Every pound or euro was a prisoner to Les, but he was much loved, and he always put a smile on my face when I saw him.” Friends on Amarilla Golf and a group from The Bell are planning their separate farewells, while his daughter Joanna and brothers Richard and Geoff, will hold a memorial service for the family and his pals in Bolton in the next week or so.
Brrr! The UK is springing towards unwelcome record
BRITAIN’S Spring will almost certainly be recorded as the coldest for more than 50 years. That’s what the provisional Met Office figures are telling us, and there won’t be too any shivering or damp people in the UK arguing about that. May has experienced below-average temperatures - and, just for good measure, it has been wetter than usual say forecasters. The UK’s mean temperature for Spring, based on figures from 1st March to 28th May, is currently 6C. If conditions are still
the same until midnight tonight (Friday), it will be the coldest spring since 1962, and the fifthcoldest since records began in 1910. The Met Office said earlier figures from 1st March to 15th May suggested Spring was set to be the sixth coldest since records began, and the coldest since 1979. But cooler-than-average weather in the past fortnight has pushed the mean temperature for the season slightly lower. Yet the figures contradict recent form for the season because forecasters noted that Spring-
time in eight of the past 10 years had been warmer than the average for that season, compared with the long-term (19812010) average of 7.7C. The main reason for the current season’s low temperatures was a colderthan-usual March, which had a mean temperature of 2.2-3.3C below the long-term average. This made it the coldest March since 1962. The forecasters added that the colder-thanaverage conditions had been caused by frequent easterly and northerly winds, bringing cold air to the UK from polar and
northern European regions. Earlier this month, snow hit Shropshire and Devon and Cornwall, while Wales experienced widespread snow in March. Rainfall amounts for March and April were below average, but May is already wetter than the norm, with the average area receiving 86mm of rain up to the 28th day of the month - against an average of 70mm! The Met Office said this suggested that Spring overall would be slightly drier than average. But definitely not as dry as Springs in 2010 and 2011.

Hospital DJ’s ‘sick’ jokes such a tonic! INEPT hospital radio DJ Ivan Brackenbury is the creation of Tom Binns, a former breakfast radio host on London’s XFM, as well as being a comedian in his own right.
And he is making a return appearance to Tenerife Comedy Club in a “Best Of” show, again as Ivan Brackenbury, on 22nd June at Karting Las Americas, along with fellow-comedians Gerry K and Sol Bernstein, plus MC Will Mars. As himself, Binns won the Jongleurs new act of the year, piloted his own chat show on Five called Tom Binns Munchies, and was one of the presenters on Channel 4 breakfast show RI:SE. He has also appeared on Knowing Me Knowing Yule with Alan Partridge, Friday Night Armistice - and Fist Of Fun as a comic actor. He created Brakenbury relatively early in his career, and the character appeared on Radio 1, Virgin and GLR, before being rested as Binns developed his own radio career. This included landing XFM with a then-record £50,000 fine for talking
about bestiality on air. However, Brakenbury was resurrected for the Edinburgh Fringe 2007, where he was nominated for the comedy prize for the best show. And his roadshow, complete with inappropriate records and bungled cues, is now a regular fixture on the live circuit. Tom’s radio show earned these plaudits from The Guardian’s entertainment critic: “If laughter is the best medicine, Ivan Brackenbury should be a real hospital radio DJ. April killer is given life, and that means forever! EVIL child-killer Mark Bridger will spend the rest of his life in prison for the abduction and murder of schoolgirl April Jones.
The five-year-old disappeared while playing on her bike near her home on the Bryn y Gog estate in Machynlleth, mid-Wales, on 1st October last year. But despite the biggest search in British policing history, her body has never been recovered. Bridger, a former slaughterhouse worker, was given a whole life sentence by trial judge Mr Justice Griffith Williams after being convicted by a jury at Mold Crown Court of April’s abduction and murder, and of perverting the course of justice by unlawfully disposing, destroying or concealing her body. The 47-year-old stood impassively as sentence was handed down. But he shook his head when the judge addressed his perverted interest in violent child abuse. The judge, calling him a “pathological and glib liar”, added: “There is no doubt in my mind that you are a paedophile, who has for some time harboured sexual and morbid fantasies about young girls.” He said Bridger had
stored on his laptop “not only images of prepubescent and pubescent girls, but foul pornography of the gross sexual abuse of young children”. Bridger had denied the allegations and claimed he killed the youngster when he accidentally ran her over. But he said he could not recall what he did with the body because he was drunk and panicking. In his sentencing remarks, the judge said Bridger had abducted April “for a sexual purpose and then murdered her and disposed of her body to hide the evidence of your sexual abuse of her”. He said it could not be inferred from the evidence where he murdered the schoolgirl, adding: “But if she were alive when you took her to the house, she died there.” “How you disposed of her body must remain a mystery. It will serve no purpose for me to speculate as to what happened, but all the indications are that you burnt at least a part of her in the wood burner.” The judge also said the “grief of April’s parents cannot be over-stated” and that without knowledge of what happened to their daughter, “her parents will probably never come to terms with their grievous loss”. The jury at Mold Crown Court returned
the unanimous verdicts following four hours and six minutes of deliberations. Bridger, wearing a blue shirt and spotted tie, appeared to hold back tears in the dock as the guilty verdicts were read out. Watching on from the public gallery were tragic April’s grieving parents, Paul, 41, and 43-year-old Coral, who attended every day of the month-long trial. Mrs Jones wiped tears away from her face as she heard the verdicts, which were met in complete silence. She said in a statement read out in court: “I will never forget that night that April never came home. “As Aprils mother, I will live with the guilt
of letting her go out to play that night for the rest of my life. “Words alone cannot describe how we are feeling, or how we manage to function on a daily basis. I would never, ever want any other family to go through what we are, and will go through, for the rest of our lives.” Bridger confessed that he may have disposed of April’s body to a Catholic priest while on remand in Strangeways Prison in Manchester. Details of his cell-room conversation, which emerged during legal argument in the trial, were never heard by the jury. After the verdicts, `prosecutors described Bridger as a “coldhearted murderer” who
“spun a web of lies and half-truths” to try to get away with his “truly horrific” crime, Elwen Evans QC, prosecuting, told the trial Bridger murdered fiveyear-old April and then played a “cruel game” in an attempt to cover his tracks. Drops of April’s blood and fragments of bone, thought to have come from an adolescent human, were found by forensics officers at Bridger’s rented cottage, Mount Pleasant, in Ceinws, Powys, which was visited by the jury in the trial’s first week. Jurors were told that Bridger was a “fantasist” who had “a clear interest in child pornography and in child murder cases”..
He had been watching a brutal rape scene from the 2009 re-make of the slasher film, The Last House on the Left, “not long before” April was murdered. The jury were shown indecent images stored on a computer taken from the killer’s home. They included many extreme pictures of naked under-age girls being sexually abused, as well as cartoon images featuring “monster sex” with “humanoids” abusing girls. Bridger also had images of April, her halfsisters, aged 13 and 16, and of the victims of “real-life” crimes, including Soham victims Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, in a folder labelled “Clothes”.

He appeared at the hospital where the trapped infant, known as Baby 59 because of his incubator number, was carefully cut out of the 10cm-wide tube after being rescued by firefighters. The man, who was not named by police, says that in 2012 he met the 22-year-old mother, who realised she was pregnant earlier this year. Authorities said the infant, who suffered minor injuries but was healthy, was discharged from hospital and released into the care of the mother and father on Wednesday night. The “father” has requested a paternity test and says he will discuss with the woman how to support the child if the baby is his. It is not known if the pair will raise the child together. B&Q saw spring sales of outdoor seasonal products plunge by more than 10%, and takings on building
products were also down in the quarter to 4th May. The trading slump in outdoor products, which contributes nearly one-third of firstquarter total sales, left B&Q with a 5.6% drop in like-for-like sales in the UK and Ireland. Kingfisher, which also owns Screwfix, together with French DIY chain Castorama and Brico Depot, said group-wide sales fell by 4.2%, and retail profits dropped by 29.2% to
£114m in the quarter. The overall group saw like-for-like sales in the first week of April down by more than 15%. It is now pinning its hopes on a better summer to regain confidence in the market. Chief executive Ian Cheshire said the bad weather in March accounted for most of the quarter’s decline in profits, though sales improved towards the end of the period as conditions improved. He added: “Looking
ahead, we still have our key summer season to come, and we are ready to capitalise on any improvement in conditions during this peak trading period.” Shares in Kingfisher fell 2.6% in early trading yesterday (Thursday) before a rally recovered most of the lost ground. Kingfisher has more than 1,000 worldwide stores, including 356 B&Q outlets in the UK and Ireland, employing a total of nearly 22,000 people.

Tobacco giants going electronic THE second-biggest tobacco company in the world appears to be gearing up to launch itself on the electronic cigarette market.
British American Tobacco (BAT) is going flat-out in an effort to boost sales of tobacco substitute products. Sky News has been led to believe that BAT will introduce a new e-cigarette brand called Vype, in the UK, France and Germany in the coming months. It will be backed by a multi-million-pound marketing budget, and it follows BAT’s acquisition last year of CN Creative, a Manchesterbased company specialising in e-cigarette products. The move comes as the major tobacco firms continue to face growing
clampdowns on their ability to package and market conventional cigarette products, even in those markets where they have previously

enjoyed the freedom to do so. BAT chief executive, Nicandro Durante has previously forecast that tobacco alternatives could make up 40% of the company’s revenue in 20 years. That would probably make BAT responsible for at least £10bn of annual sales based on current growth rates. Insiders say that Vype will be a renamed CN Creative product rather than having an entirely new launch.
The push into a category labelled “safer cigarettes” has angered some campaigners, who believe they are a public relations exercise whose real purpose is to encourage youngsters to become familiar with the smoking habit. The row over cigarette packaging intensified recently with the Government’s decision to drop legislation which would have forced manufacturers to use plain packaging only to sell their products.
Country life might not be so healthy after all LIFE in the country sounds just perfect to some townies, but there could be a possible link between rural living and Parkinson’s Disease. Analysis of more than 100 studies from around the world shows that exposure to pesticides, bug-and-weed killers and solvents is associated with a higher risk of developing the disease. Study author Dr Emanuele Cereda said: “Because of this association, there was also a link between farming or country living and developing Parkinson’s in some of the studies.” Researchers from Italy’s IRCCS University Hospital San Matteo Foundation in Pavia, reviewed studies that looked at weed, fungus, rodent or bug-killers, and solvents, in relation to the risk of developing Parkinson’s. Proximity to these chemicals, through country living, occupation and drinking water, was also evaluated. The research found that being exposed to bug or weed killers and solvents increased the risk of developing Parkinson’s by 33% to 80%.
In controlled studies, exposure to the weedkiller paraquat, or the fungicides maneb and mancozeb, was associated with twice the risk of developing the disease. Dr Cereda added: “We didn’t study whether the type of exposure, such as whether the compound was inhaled or absorbed through the skin and the method of application, such as spraying or mixing, affected Parkinson’s risk. “However, our study suggests that the risk increases in a dose-response manner as the length of exposure to these chemicals increases.” Parkinson's disease mainly develops in the over 50s, with some five in 1,000 people in their 60s, and about 40 in 1,000 people in their 80s having the condition. The main symptoms are slowness of movement, stiffness of muscles and shaking. These tend to worsen slowly with time, although the rate varies from patient to patient. There is currently no cure. The research appears in the journal Neurology.

Going Google-eyed over the Galapagos
NOT too many people have explored the most remote areas of the Galapagos Islands, off Ecuador.
But with just one click of a mouse, you will soon be transported to the place which inspired Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. That’s because Google Maps sent hikers with 360-degree cameras sticking out of their rucksacks to take Street View pictures of the beauty and biological diversity of the archipelago, which is listed as a United Nations World Heritage Site. The team trekked across hills and even into a live volcano to capture panoramic views of some of the most inaccessible places on the Galapagos. “We were in a boat on choppy waves, clambering over lava rocks and on horseback up the side of a volcano,” said Google Maps project leader Raleigh Seamster. “There were a lot of adventurous times. It was very inspiring.” The cameras captured the nesting sites of blue-footed boobies, red-throated frigatebirds, hammerhead sharks and the islands’
famous giant tortoises. “They picked a very diverse set of places, from some that tourists visit quite often to locations that are off-limits,” said Ms Seamster, “We had to hike across four kilometres of lava fields to get to a spot where land iguana restoration was going on. We were able to get very close to animals.” The Street View team spent 10 days on the is-
lands, working with the Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF), Galapagos National Park Directorate and Catlin Seaview Survey, which helped snap high-definition underwater images. The CDF had urged California-based Google to add images from the Galapagos Islands to Google Maps to let people virtually explore without treading on the fragile ecosystem -
and as resources for research and education. “This is a unique opportunity to spearhead technology science for conservation and public awareness about the importance of Galapagos ecosystems in a changing world,” said Daniel Orellana, the CDF’s head of research on human systems. Scientists working with Google are exploring the footage for
other species and hope to update the pictures regularly throughout the years as they study the effects of invasive species, tourism and climate change on the island’s ecosystems. Google engineers are processing the footage and weaving the images into Street View scenes, which will be added to its free online mapping service later this year.
Since launching Street View in 2007, Google has expanded from urban neighbourhoods, which can be accessed easily by its mapping cars, to sites like the ocean floor, the Amazon rainforest and the Arctic. “This whole project was part of Google’s ongoing effort to build the most comprehensive and accurate map of the world,” added Ms Seamster.

London Look is all the the rage in the South THE first London Look shop, situated on Amarilla Golf, opened its doors in June 2012 not knowing what to expect.
Katie’s our very own horse KATIE is 12 years old, underweight and suffering from a painful condition in her hooves called laminitis. She was offered free to Live Arico PAWS as a last resort to avoid her being destroyed, as her owner could no longer afford to look after her. We have committed to her lifetime care, and she is staying at Finca Cabuquero, the riding stables in Aldea Blanca, where owners Jim and Sara have kindly reduced her livery fees in recognition of our efforts to save her life. The vet has already micro-chipped and vaccinated her, and she had to be sedated while her shoes were removed by farrier Jaime because she was in so much pain. It is understood she was ridden from Adeje to Mount Teide and back by road, which has added to her problems. It will be a long haul, perhaps as long as two years, but we are with her every step of the way. She obviously cannot be ridden at this time. Katie has her own page on our website, w w w. l i v e a r i c o . c o m where we post regular updates and photos, but you are more than welcome to visit Katie from Tuesday-Sunday (10am-2pm or 4-8pm). moved last summer to the Government facility in Fasnia, we have not had our own refuge. We finance some dogs in two dog hotels, and rescue/rehome using a trusted network of foster carers. There was some confusion this week when a member of the public tried to leave an abandoned dog at one of the pet hotels we use because he was told: “That is where the Live Arico dogs are now.” To clarify, we cannot accept abandoned animals at the pet hotels, or, for that matter, at our charity shops. We will always try to help with urgent cases in finding a solution, and we can put pets for rehoming on our website. But we absolutely must not return to the situation where dogs are dumped on us enmasse. However, there was no need for the owners to worry because the business has just gone from strength to strength. The popular boutique, which specialises in fashion for men and women, has proved popular with locals and tourists alike, attracting customers from as far afield as Granadilla and Callao Salvaje. Joint-owner Ruth puts this down to the style, quality and price of the clothes, adding: “Although we tried to source local suppliers, the costs were just too expensive, and we wouldn’t have been able to be competitive. “All our ranges and designs are sourced in the UK and shipped over, meaning people can be comfortable with the sizes and quality.” Following on from the success of the Ama-
rilla Golf shop, London Look’s owners are opening their second shop tomorrow (Saturday), in the popular Parque Santiago 3 shopping centre. The shop, situated along the Playa de las Americas golden mile, will give them the opportunity to introduce their brand to a wider market. Although the location puts them into competition with the likes of Zara and Bershka, they feel that the high quality and quirky designs will ensure they stand out - helping them dress a whole new range of customers. The proprietors of London Look, Ruth, Terry and Adi, invite you to join them tomorrow (1st June) between 10am-6pm to enjoy a glass of cava, check out what’s new in store and help them toast their new venture. Callao Salvaje opens its arms to the world CALLAO Salvaje’s Dia de la Convivencia, which coincides with European Neighbours’ Day, takes place today (Friday). The 12-hour event, celebrating co-existence, has everything for everyone, which makes it such a popular attraction every year for residents and friends. It runs from 11am until 11pm, with sports for the kids in the morning (mini-basketball, table football and mini-football), followed in the afternoon by a foam party, a bouncy castle, visits from Spiderman and SpongeBob - and a performance by the Let’s Dance school. Then, in the evening, music will be provided
by an Adeje folk group and singers from the village - Spanish, English and Welsh (what, no Irish or Scots?). There will be music and food, hot dogs and refreshments, and the annual dessert competition with cash prizes (has to be home-made and everyone wants to be on the jury!), as well as a superb raffle with loads of prizes, supplied by all the businesses in the village. This annual event is being organised by the Callao Salvaje Residents Association, whose Cliodna O’Flynn says: “It should be a great day. It gets bigger and better every year and it really does work in bringing this very multi-national village together.”

Smart-casual dress is new Fred Olsen plan FRED. OLSEN Cruise Lines is streamlining the various evening dress codes for passengers across its fleet of four ships - Balmoral, Braemar, Boudicca and Black Watch.
The company will continue with its traditional Black Tie rule for “Formal Nights” - usually three or four during a two-week cruise.
But the dress code for the other evenings on board will be simplified to “Smart Casual”, allowing a more relaxed feel while maintaining the high standards embraced and enjoyed by guests. The previous “informal” dress code is being removed, and with the “Smart Casual” edict, gentleman are at liberty to wear a jacket and tie. Equally, they may prefer to opt for an open-necked shirt, with Chinos or smart, darkcoloured jeans. For ladies, the choice
could be an elegant dress or casual separates. Nathan Philpot, Sales and Marketing Director for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said: “While many cruise lines have done away with dress codes altogether, we are aware that a significant number of our guests welcome the opportu-
nity to dress-up on special occasions, such as the ‘Captain’s Welcome Cocktail Party’. So we will be continuing with the popular Black Tie theme on these nights. “However, we have listened to our guests’ feedback and there is a demand from many for a more relaxed and informal dress code for

Any chance of an upgrade? A smartly-dressed, single man in his 30s is the passenger most likely to get a free upgrade according to a survey of 700 cabin crew.
It found that nearly two-thirds (61%) of cabin crew have given someone a free upgrade, and it’s single guys that are bagging the premium seats. However, you can kiss goodbye to the chance to sip complimentary cocktails in First Class if you’re flying as a hen party. The flyers voted least likely to get an upgrade are women in their late teens, wearing revealing clothing and travelling

as part of a group. For those who don’t fit the bill, crew have outlined how passengers can up their chances of getting that elusive free upgrade. While a few manners will go far, frequent flyers and solo travellers are odds-
on favourites to get bumped up to premium, if seats are available. Almost three quarters (72%) of cabin crew said they were more inclined to offer a free upgrade to a passenger who was flying alone. Other factors that increase the likelihood of escaping economy are being a frequent flyer and having an injury. Nearly two thirds revealed that a passenger with a broken limb was more likely to get the premium experience for free. In a separate poll of passengers, they found that travellers will do pretty much anything to get a luxury seat up front. Three quarters said they would tell a
few fibs if it improved their chances, while others would pretend to be newlyweds (14%), 6% would feign illness or injury and 7% would ditch their partner and pretend to be travelling solo. who turn out to have extraordinary links to the Coronation. Michael Skinner was a young tailor from Reading who dressed the Peers of the Realm, including Winston Churchill, for the service – and remembers Churchill refusing to wear the right hat! Skinner later sneaked to the top of
one of the Abbey’s towers where he beheld the full splendour of Elizabeth’s entrance. Schoolgirl Heather Morgan from South Wales camped out on the Mall where she got very wet and hoarse from cheering every arrival as loudly as if they were pop stars. Seeing the Queen inspired Heather to believe that girls could achieve whatever they wanted to in life. We also hear from those with prominent roles in the ceremony itself, such as the Queen’s Maids of Honour. Their memories of the year add some delicious insider looks at the event itself. For example, Lady Anne Coke’s dress was too tight, and the Archbishop of Canterbury had to give her a nip of brandy during a break so that she wouldn’t faint!

Far from being lifeless, the vast inner space of our planet contains an extraordinary array of beautiful and bizarre creatures, from 40mlong jellyfish to grotesque angler fish and vampire squid. Our journey from the sunlit surface waters to the deepest reaches of the abyss reveals how life persists in such a hostile world.

The Humber. Countryfile travels to Yorkshire and the Humber, a dynamic landscape where expansive skies take in views over its low-lying countryside and its dramatic coastline. Matt Baker is out on the Humber estuary. When the tide retreats it reveals a large expanse of saltmarsh and mudflats; beneath it, a banquet awaits the thousands of wading birds that flock here. But to make sure there is enough food for them, the marsh has to be managed. Matt finds out about a new project that has been set up which brings together farming and conservation. It's not just the coastline that is a rich breeding ground for wildlife; Julia Bradbury discovers it can be found in the most unlikely of places. Leconfield is an MOD defence school for transport. It is here that military personnel learn how to drive combat vehicles; but away from the track, a small army of volunteers are doing their bit for nature. Julia joins them on a night-time operation looking for deer.

The team visit Gardening Scotland, the biggest gardening show north of the border. After the terrible early season weather this year it will be a huge challenge for all of the exhibitors. Seventy years on, veterans and their families gather to remember the raid and the bravery of the 133 men who undertook it. Tributes include Tornado jets from the current 617 Squadron, Spitfires and a Lancaster Bomber from the Battle of Britain flying in to RAF Scampton, the home of the Dambusters, plus the Queen's Colour Squadron and the College Band of the RAF end the commemoration with a Sunset Ceremony.

Dirty Britain ITV1, 21.00 “You do get a bit smelly. If you need to go shopping on the way home, you try not to get dirty that day otherwise you walk in Tesco’s and people do look at you funny. It’s one of them smells that if you get it on your actual flesh, you ain’t getting it out for a while. It lingers.” Alex, Portaloo Cleaner Britain is an island obsessed with cleaning. But we’re not as clean as we’d like to think and the 400,000 men and women who do our dirty work know the truth. Unseen and unheard, they keep our filth out of sight and prevent us from drowning beneath our mountains of waste. As Dirty Britain returns for a second two-part series, we uncover the truth about the grime hidden within our green and pleasant land. In episode one, we meet portaloo cleaners Alex and Silvo from Essex. Alex explains: “You’d be surprised how people actually leave them and you think, ‘What’s it like at their house?’ It’s a dirty job.” Despite admitting it’s not unusual to get excrement on his clothes after a day on the job, Alex still takes pride in his work: “A lot of people my age, like 16-25, don’t want to work. Some days I don’t get back to the yard until 7pm but I know that what goes on the table for my kids, I’ve earned, what gets in the house, I’ve earned and paid for it, instead of the tax payer paying for it all.” In Britain we now employ more domestic cleaners than ever before with one in ten homes paying someone else to clean for them, which is four times more than in the 1970s. Sandra runs a domestic cleaning company in Surrey with over 40 cleaners on her books and the keys to some of the country’s most expensive houses. Yet it seems wealth does not always make for better clients. Sandra says: “We have clients who’ll ring up and say: ‘I’m really glad the girls are coming tomorrow because the dog’s made a mess in the kitchen and they can clean it up when they come.’ And you think: ‘You’re gonna cook in your kitchen with dog’s mess in the corner?’ Why would you think it’s ok to call and say that and why would you think the girls would want to clean it up? Nothing surprises me now.” Michelle and Alison clean 20 houses every week. Alison says: “Sometimes you do feel a little bit second class, because you’re cleaning. Some people think because you’re a cleaner you’re a nobody basically, they think you’re thick.”
Sixty years after being crowned, Her Majesty the Queen returns to Westminster Abbey for a service of celebration. There she is joined by her children and grandchildren, along with other members of the Royal Family. The choir performs music sung at the coronation in 1953; and the prayers and readings echo rituals that go back a thousand years. Sophie Raworth talks to people who witnessed the coronation first hand: the photographer who had a bird's eye view from his vantage point high up in the roof; the eleven-year-old choirboys who, between rehearsals, tried out the coronation chair for size; and the Queen's cousin, who remembers the new monarch looking very young and alone amidst all the pomp and ceremony.

All of these highly specialized dogs are trained from puppies to be critical members of the armed forces.

David Walliams: Snapshot In Time ITV1, 21.00 On 23 March 1983, an 11-year-old David Walliams stood on the stage at his Surrey grammar school and made people laugh for the first time. It was the night that was to change the course of his life and a moment that was captured on camera in a much-treasured photograph. Now, 30 years later, David wants to travel back to that day and recapture an experience that changed his life. Now an award-winning comedy actor, multi-million-pound charity fundraiser and Britain’s Got Talent’s most anarchic judge, David regards the photograph of his stage debut as Queen Henrietta Maria in the school production of All The King’s Men, and credits it as capturing a defining moment in his life. In this one-off documentary, he sets out to find the classmates who were pictured alongside him, playing his ladies in waiting, and to discover what has happened to them in the 30 years since it was taken. His journey takes him into his childhood past, to his home and his old school as he attempts to reunite his school friends, hear their stories and recreate the image in the present. David says of the photo: “That’s the first moment I was on stage. It was such an incredible high, hearing the laughter and the applause. It was the first moment where I felt, ‘Oh, this is something I’m good at.” “All I had to do was play this queen and come on and fan myself, while these other boys, who were playing my ladies in waiting, were singing to me. For me, it was a real eureka moment. Quite unexpectedly, I got laughs. I suddenly felt that I was on some kind of road then, that I wasn’t aware of before, but I was definitely thinking, ‘Oh, right, that’s what I wanna do. I wanna experience that again. I wanna get on the stage again. I wanna get laughs again.’” David returns to Reigate Grammar School and meets up with his English and Music teachers, Keith Shipton and Robert Marsh, who introduced him to the stage. David didn’t audition for the role but was asked to play it by Mr Shipton. Keith Shipton says: “As I can remember, looking at this little boy and seeing the eyes which I’m seeing in front of me now, they’re eyes of somebody who wants to laugh and make people laugh.” With the help of the school’s alumni team, David begins to identify the other five boys in the photograph with him, who played his ladies in waiting, in the hope of reuniting with them and recreating the image that captured the moment his career began. He starts by hitting the phone to make contact in the hope of using his persuasive talents to secure a reunion.

Comedian Bill Bailey heads to the jungles of Indonesia in the footsteps of his hero, Victorian naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace, to understand how he came up with the theory of evolution independently of Darwin. Wallace was a brilliantly eccentric British explorer and, unlike Darwin, he came from a humble background and had to pay his own way by collecting animals. He survived months living in the jungle, man-eating tigers, and headhunting tribes to scoop Darwin to the theory of evolution. Wallace changed the way we see life on earth but has since been written out of history. In the first of this two part series, Bill retraces Wallace's explorations from the jungles of Borneo to the exotic islands of Indonesia.

THE last remaining heat for Tenerife Loves Karaoke 2013 finished in great style at Leonardo’s in Las Americas.
And, as in 2012, there were TWO places up for grabs in the Grand Final tomorrow (Saturday) at Showtime, Karting Las Americas. Judges for the evening were Oasis Fm’s breakfast show presenter Roscoe, Leonardo’s owner David Elliott, and musician and singer Ian Lennard. With a full complement of entrants, and a terrace full to bursting, it fell to Duncan (on holiday from Scotland) to get us underway. He opened the evening admirably with Take That’s A Million Love Songs and set the bar for the rest of the night. Barbara McGivern (runner-up at the Brewer’s Droop heat) offered another perfect rendition of Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares to You to a great response from the bulging audience. Bar and hair & Beauty shop owner Ray Evans went in third. We haven’t had too many people choosing rock songs, but the ones we have had have been excellent. Ray continued the trend, belting out Dakota by the Stereophonics. Amber Maene, a 16-year-old El Medano student, was to sing next. When you see that someone has opted to sing Jennifer

Hudson’s version of And I am Telling You, you do wonder which way it will go. It was a gutsy choice, and extremely demanding. But Amber blew the roof off the place with a stunning performance, full of emotion which belied her tender age, and received a standing (and screaming) ovation. Someone had to follow, and that dubious honour fell to the seasoned Bobby, who has been collecting trophies in the later heats of TLK 2013. Much to my surprise, he left Luther behind and, instead, chose the original version of Run by Snow Patrol. When asked about his choice, Bobby said he felt he should change his song to suit the younger audience. It paid off, and he left the stage to chants of “Bobby, Bobby”. Natasha brought the first half to a close with a lovely version of Christina Perri’s Jar of Hearts, another difficult song, and well delivered. Into the second half and the first of two Dannys was called to the stage. Danny C chose Michael Bublé’s Feeling Good and gave a

solid performance. Texan Adele (who had been cajoled into entering by some people she met earlier in the week) sang a song by her namesake, bringing her personal touch to Someone Like You. Nathan Veness, the self-proclaimed “Best Robbie Williams on the Island”, went in ninth, and he didn’t disappoint. Nathan gave his all and had the entire audience with their arms in the air, waving along to his entertaining performance. It’s surprising how many entrants have chosen power ballads this year, and our next
contestant, Sofi, chose one of my favourites, Get Here, by Oleta Adams. She showed excellent vocal control, and her rich voice suited the song perfectly. Our second Danny, superstar PR Danny McNamara, was our penultimate contestant. He chose Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car which, I felt, was an unusual choice and not at all what I would have expected. Danny’s PR mates lined the street as he began what was to be a spine-tingling rendition, proving that you can’t judge a book by its cover.
Last to go was the youngest contestant in the qualifying rounds this year - 14-year-old Ashley – who has also picked up a few trophies this year, and was having one last crack at the final. This time, he opted for Ed Sheeran’s A Team, opting to have no reverb on his voice. This gave it a stripped-back feel, and was well received by the still-expanding audience. It took a minute or so for the final four to be announced, and they were: Bobby, Ray, Amber and Danny M. In the sing-off, Bobby was drawn to go first, and he sang the Sinatra classic My Way, again
Feature bringing whoops from the audience. Ray went next, and stuck to rock, this time choosing Use Somebody by Kings of Leon. It was another solid performance that more that justified his place in the sing-off. Danny M went third and chose Jason Mraz’s happy singalong I’m Yours. He showed versatility and had everyone joining in. Amber performed last, and was the first person this year to even attempt a Beyoncé song, choosing Halo. We were spoiled by her incredible first-round song, and, although still amazing, it was weaker than her first offering. Would it be enough to secure a place in the final? That was down to the judges. Third place went to Danny, second to Bobby, and Amber was the winner of heat 11. Thanks to all at Leonardo’s: manager Steve Wynne, bar staff Rebecca and Blake, waiting staff Sammy, Olivia, Jack, Adam, Dudley, Smudger and Andy. And, of course, the bossman himself, David Elliott. The final is tomorrow (Saturday, 1st June) at Showtime, Karting Las Americas. It’s free admission, doors open at 8pm and we start at 9pm. There are 12 finalists, ranging from 15 to 71 years. We have students, a retiree, a Tarot reader and a boutique manager among others. One finalist WILL walk away with the 1,000euro prize, and title of Winner, TLK 2013.

By Sue McDonald THE rush for sofa beds, particularly those madeto-measure, continues - not that I’m complaining!. I feel a lot of property owners, particularly from El Mirador, Dinastia and Los Seres among others, have reached the stage where their sofas have had several years of wear and tear in a rental environment. In many cases, it was nice to see the old faces back again (I mean that in the nicest possible way). Sometimes, we are able to reupholster the original sofas, provided the mechanism and the foam itself is in good condition, and reupholstering is the most economic course of action. In other cases where the clients want a change of style, for example a corner sofa including a bed, we have also been able to do this. There also seem to be a few people who bought their properties a decade ago and are now retiring, or at least spending more time here in Tenerife. As a result, they are choosing to replace their “rental” sofa with something more substantial and comfortable. And there are also a lot of clients, particularly from Royal Palm and Port Royal, who brought their good-quality sofas from the UK many years ago. We can reupholster them to give them a new lease of life - and, sometimes, if they are brave enough, in a fabulous bright colour! In the photo you will see

It’s sofa so good! a Royal Palm sofa reupholstered. It’s not new, but it looks it! A sofas is one of those items for which it is worth investing well. It is a false economy to buy a cheap sofa which is uncomfortable as a sofa or as a bed from the beginning, or which you have to replace within a year or two. Often, people come to us looking for a quality sofa because they have previously had one from that Scandinavian shop in the north, and have had to replace it a year later. Budget is obviously an issue more than ever nowadays. But where possible, it is wise to invest in this area more than others. In one particular case, we had a gentleman in one of the older apartment blocks in Los Cristianos who wanted a big modern sofa with a chaise and a bed. But he was concerned that because of the width of the front door and the passageway, every sofa he had looked at would not go into the property. He also wanted leather, which meant the sofa was a major investment for him, and he wanted it to be absolutely right. We were able to supply him with his sofa, made exactly to his measure-
ments to fit into an alcove, with a chaise and a double bed with sprung mattress. And, best of all, the whole thing was made in pieces so that we could get it through the door, and assemble it on site. Problem solved! We also continue to work with many of the factories we have traded with over the last 20 years, and, in another instance, a couple came in who were short of storage in the lounge. They liked a sideboard we offered them from a catalogue, but had more space available, so we ended up making them a larger, four-door sideboard to occupy a whole run of wall, to match the rest of their furniture. Obviously, we offer standard size sofas and sofa beds at very competitive prices, and we have examples of the quality in our office. However, in many cases, there is no extra charge for minor changes to design or size. This is the advantage of working with factories for many years, and who make the furniture themselves rather than simply producing standard sizes. Long may the run on sofas continue! Sofa so good!

Luckily, Richard and I don’t have to make those kinds of judgements. “If we agree that it’s simply a damned good read, it gets on to our short-list - simple as that. We’ve gradually developed faith in our judgement because it seems to be backed by many of you.” She added: “Richard and I have just completed our first novels, so we really do know, first-hand, all about the agony and ecstasy involved. It’s very hard work, that’s for sure. “A lot of people thinking about having a go at their own novel ask us for some advice, based on our recent experience. “The first thing I’d say is to go out and buy a fabulous book on writing by Stephen King; it’s called, obviously enough, On Writing. “My son Dan bought it for me two or three years ago when I was hesitating and prevaricating over properly starting work on Eloise, and it was a life-saver. “King writes such good sense about the whole writing process - un-pompous, encouraging, clear chapters of practical and (crucially) emotional advice. If it can be boiled down into one sentence, it’s a very short one – ‘JUST DO IT!’”

Grow your own
tomatoes By David Hudgell G A R D ENER S often plant their greenhouse tomatoes in grow bags, but you can also nuture them outdoors in the same way.
And an alternative to using a specialist grow bag is to try planting them in a 60 or 75-litre sack of multi-purpose compost. This will provide your plants with a larger rooting area and stop them drying out in hot weather, which is better for the plants - and means less watering for you! Here’s what you need to get started on the project, and it shouldn’t take you long to prepare the way: *2-3 tomato plants *60 or 75-litre bag of multi-purpose compost *Knife or scissors *Trowel Prepare the way outdoors in June, or May in a greenhouse - and, at its best, you should be picking your first harvest from July to September. Method *Soak pots of young tomato plants in a tray

of water for an hour to ensure the compost is fully moistened. This will help reduce root damage during transplanting. *Lay bag of compost flat in a sunny position in the garden, on a balcony or in the greenhouse. Shake compost inside the bag to create an even, pillow shape. *Cut a slot out of the bag to expose the compost for planting them into. *Loosen the compost in the bag with a hand fork. Push some of it into the corners of the bag so that it maintains
a good shape. *Carefully knock the tomato plants from their pots. Allow two plants for a 60-litre bag of compost, or three plants for the 75-litre one. *Make a hole in the compost with a trowel and place the young tomato plant in it. Set the plant a little deeper than it was growing in the pot because tomato plants are able to produce roots from the stem, which means they will take up more water and nutrients. *Water in well. A good
tip to improve the effectiveness of your watering is to bury a small flower pot in the compost alongside each tomato plant. Filling the pot when you water means the liquid is directed to the roots of the plant and doesn’t run off the surface of the compost. *Start feeding your tomato plants with a high potash liquid fertiliser as soon as the first truss of flowers appears. And that’s it! Soon, you’ll be picking rich, ripe tomatoes for those salad days of summer.
*Plant out dahlias into well-prepared soil, which has been enriched with manure *Clip box-hedging and topiary to keep it neat *Tie tall stems of delphiniums to supports regularly to prevent them flopping over *Scatter granular fertiliser around the base of roses, shrubs, perennials and hedges, and water in thoroughly if rain does not fall over the next week *Sow seeds of dwarf beans in rows and climbing ones alongside canes *Plant out crops such as marrows, courgettes and tomatoes *Cover soft fruits with netting to prevent birds eating them *Sow a few seeds of salad leaves and stirfry leaf crops every 2-3 weeks to ensure a regular supply *Sow seeds of the following crops outside this week: beetroot, lettuce, watercress,
rocket, radish, spring onions, coriander, parsley, chives, carrots, Swedes, turnip, leaf beet, spinach, cabbage, peas and mangetout, endive, marrows and courgettes, turnips and chicory *Plant out leeks into their final position once they are pencil thick *Feed fast-growing plants with a diluted liquid or powdered fertiliser *Hand-weed flower beds to prevent weeds establishing and setting seed *Build simple log piles at the back of borders to provide shelter for frogs, toads, hedgehogs, beetles and other pest-eating wildlife *Take cuttings from pelargoniums and fuchsias *Re-pot rooted cuttings into containers a size larger, to prevent them from becoming pot-bound *Check plants regularly for signs of pests
Geranium gets RHS vote as Plant of the Centenary THOUSANDS of people voted for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show’s Plant of the Centenary from a shortlist of 10. That meant one for each decade of the Show - and this beautiful Geranium Rozanne (Gerwat), the top plant launched between 1993-2002, was the No1 choice throughout the 100 years. It got your votes because of its beautiful, violet-blue flowers growing atop mounds of slightly marbled, deep-green foliage. Its lengthy flowering period is June to at least September. Geraniums (or Cranesbills) are versatile perennials which flower for several months through early summer, and they
are at their best in July. The Geranium Rozanne looks at its best when grown among shrubs and taller perennials, where its lax habit can be used to full advantage. And at RHS Garden Hyde Hall, it is used in several mixed plantings, such as the Island Beds in the Hilltop Garden, to create a fantastic effect. Geraniums comprise a genus of around 300 species of annuals, biennials and herbaceous, semi-evergreen, sometimes tuberous, perennials. They are sometimes confused with the genus Pelargonium, which is mistakenly known as geranium. These beautiful

plants are found in all except very wet habitats in temperate regions. They are generally long-lived, undemanding plants. Compact perennials, to about 15cm tall, are good for a rock garden; trailing, while spreading
or mat-forming plants are effective as ground cover in a woodland or wild garden. Taller, clump-forming species and hybrids, such as the Rozanne, are suitable for a border or among shrubs. The leaves, usually
rounded or five-pointed, are palmately lobed with the divisions often further lobed and toothed; they frequently have interesting mark, textures, colours or scent. Flowers are white, pink, purple or blue, usually saucer-shaped, sometimes flat or with petals reflexed and often petals contrastingly veined. Its leaves form mounds of slightly marbled, deep-green foliage, above which appear loose cymes of large (up to 5cm across) saucer-shaped, violetblue flowers with pale whitish centres and red veins radiating out into the five petals. Geranium “Gerwat” is perfect for under-plant-
ing roses or filling a few gaps in the front of a border, coping well in full sun or partial shade. This plant, which needs watering freely in the growing season, is fast-growing and will benefit from a late summer chop to tidy it up and encourage production of fresh foliage and extended flowering. Cut back to one-third of height with sharp shears or secateurs. But be warned: plants may be damaged by vine weevil and sawfly larvae, slugs and snails - and mildew could be a problem in dry, powdery conditions. Sow seed in containers outdoors as soon as ripe, and lift and divide large colonies in spring.

I OFTEN get asked for miracles in bottles products to solve anything, from dandruff to fine hair.
We live in a world of perfection, and most of you out there seem to fall for any publicity which tells you that this product or that product will cure your particular problem. For instance, the most popular shampoo to “cure” dandruff works like an abrasive. Yes, like sandpaper! It scours off a layer of your scalp as you shampoo it and, hey presto, no more dandruff! That is, until you stop using it - and then it returns. But why? Simple, it’s because removing a layer of skin is not natural. As quick as you remove it, you encourage more to the surface and actually create more dandruff. Instead, try using a tea tree oilbased shampoo, which is medicated and far more gentle on the scalp. I was asked a few weeks ago if I knew of a product that could cure baldness! Take a look at the photo of me above. Errrrr, do you not think that if I knew of one, I would have a full head of hair, too? There is NO known cure for male pattern baldness. You accept it

or do an ELTON. Hairthickening lotions? They make me laugh as well. People actually think that they are going to get more hair out of a spray can, but all they do is coat what you have left on top, making it “appear” thicker. Conditioners which can repair your hair, from frazzled and burnt to thick and glorious? Please, save your money. Scissors are the only answer to that problem. I try to keep quiet in the salon when I hear clients saying they have bought a particular product, which says on the bottle that it’s a cure for “blah, blah, blah”.
It can say what it wants, and you can believe it if it makes you feel better. But in my experience, simple solutions are better. I sell only five products in the salon, which are the basics to care for your hair. They DO what they say they will, and DON’T cost the earth. If buying a 50-euro product makes you feel good, then go ahead if you can afford it. But you’ll end up shoving it at the back of the bathroom cupboard. As with all things, you get what you pay for. But don’t have the wool pulled over you eyes. If it’s claiming a miracle will happen, then think twice!
Hard to swallow if you enjoy coffee that much SWIGGING five cups of coffee a day may lead to weight-gain and increase the risk of diabetes.
While previous studies have shown coffee in moderation could help weight loss and actually reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes, recent findings suggest that too much coffee could block weight loss. Australian researchers found that overconsumption of certain polyphenols found in coffee, called chlorogenic acid (CGA), could prevent fat-loss and lead to insulin resistance. The study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, tested CGA’s effects on obese mice, which were given different doses of the compound. Those given doses equivalent to five or six cups of coffee per day showed retention of fat within cells. The obese mice also
showed more glucose intolerance - a pre-diabetic condition - and increased resistance to insulin regulation. “Studies have shown that coffee consumption lowers the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes,” said study coauthor Professor Kevin Croft, of the University of Western Australia. “This also included research on decaffeinated coffee, which suggested that the health benefits are from a compound in coffee apart from caffeine. “Chlorogenic acid found in coffee could affect how the liver metabolises fat, and how cells store fat, contributing to weight-gain “With this in mind, we studied the effects of polyphenols, or, more specifically, CGAs, which are very rich in coffee - but also found in tea and some fruits, including plums. Vance Matthews, of the Western Australian Institute for Medical Research, who co-authored the study, said: “The CGAs were previ-
ously known for their health benefits, increasing insulin sensitivity and reducing blood pressure and body-fat accumulation. “However, this study proved the opposite in dosages equivalent to five or six cups of coffee per day. “Everybody knows about the effects of caffeine, but when we’re considering our lifestyle choices, it’s important to remember that compounds such as CGA can have an effect on our health if they’re not consumed in moderation.” But he stressed that it was still fine for people to drink moderate amounts of coffee. “It seems that the health effects are dosedependent, and up to three to four cups a day still seems to decrease the risk of developing diseases such as cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes,” he said. The researchers also noted that CGA doesn’t prevent weight-gain in obese laboratory mice fed a high-fat diet when used at higher doses. Professor Croft said: “People might be wasting their money if they’re buying expensive products like green coffee-bean dietary supplements, which are currently considered to be amazing weight-loss products.” A recent study published in the European Journal of Neurology found that coffee-drinkers can cut their risks of dementia by 60%, while also lowering risk of Parkinson’s by up to the same percentage.

The tablet, which contains a large dose of three types of vitamin B, has already been shown to protect parts of the brain. Researchers have now discovered that it slows shrinkage of the areas vulnerable to dementia by as much as 90%. Research leader David Smith, Professor Emeritus of Pharmacology at Oxford University, said: “Our work shows that a key part of the process that leads to Alzheimer’s might be modified by a safe and simple intervention.” TrioBe Plus, the pill used in the trial, costs around 25p, but it contains a combination

B9 or folic acid - can slow mental decline in the elderly who suffer from mild memory problems. Now, the latest analysis of a 2010 clinical trial, part-
funded by the Medical Research Council, has found that high doses of the vitamins - especially B12 - can help protect the parts of the brain affected by Alzheimer’s. Taking B12, folic acid and vitamin B6 can lower the levels of an amino acid called homocysteine, which is associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers have discovered that some participants in the study with mild cognitive impairment, who had raised blood levels of homocysteine, suffered a rapid rate of shrinkage of particular regions of the brain. But this was slowed down dramatically in those given the B vitamins.
Mild cognitive impairment is when people have problems with their memory, but not full dementia. Around 16% of over-70s are thought to suffer from it. This latest analysis was carried out by Dr Gwenaelle Douaud at Oxford’s Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain Centre. Dr Douaud showed that the atrophy of these specific regions of the brain was linked to cognitive decline among the study’s 156 participants. The team found that in the 77 participants with high homocysteine levels, B vitamins (particularly B12), lowered them. An earlier report from the trial showed that B vitamin treatment could slow total brain shrinkage by up to 50%. But this new report, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows that the beneficial effect is largely in the Alzheimer’s-vulnerable areas of the brain. The shrinkage rate of these areas was nearly 90% slower in those with high homocysteine who took B vitamins, compared with a placebo group. People already with low levels of homocysteine did not benefit from taking the B vitamins because they had a lower rate of shrinkage
in the Alzheimer’s areas of the brain. Professor Smith said: “We hope that the outcome of this trial will encourage many more studies on the identification of modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease, now that we have established that, in principle, a crucial element of the disease - loss of specific brain tissue - might largely be prevented.” Professor Hugh Perry, chairman of the MRC’s Neurosciences and Mental Health Board, said: “We already know that low levels of B vitamins are associated with cognitive impairment. “This study adds to that knowledge and shows that high doses of these vitamins particularly B12 - can lower homocysteine levels and reduce the rate of atrophy of those specific parts of the brain related to Alzheimer’s. “The challenge now is to identify the mechanisms by which lower homocysteine influences brain atrophy, and to study larger cohorts of patients in trials to confirm that progression to dementia really can be slowed down.” Dr Eric Karran, Director of Research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “It is too early to know whether these effects mean someone is less likely to develop dementia in the long term. “It is also not clear from other research whether B vitamins would have any benefit for those who already have dementia. “ Doctor Karran cautioned: “Until further trials have confirmed these findings, we would recommend people think about eating a healthy and balanced diet. “Controlling weight and blood pressure, as well as taking exercise, are also ways to help to keep our brains healthy as we get older.”

Walking the bread line Britain faces a hidden scandal where thousands of people cannot feed themselves or their families, according to a hard hitting report from Church Action Poverty and Oxfam.
The two charities, with the backing of the Trussell Trust, are calling for an urgent Parliamentary Inquiry into the relationship between benefit delay, error or sanctions, welfare reform changes and the growth of Britain’s ‘hidden hungry’. The report: Walking the Breadline, highlights causes of the increase in use of food banks as down to changes to the benefit system, unemployment, increasing levels of underemployment, low and falling income and rising food and fuel prices. Changes to the benefit system are the most common reasons for people using food banks; these include changes to crisis loan eligibility rules, delays in payments, Jobseeker’s Allowance sanctions and sickness benefit reassessments. Mark Goldring, Oxfam’s CEO said: “The shocking reality is that hundreds of thousands of people in the UK
are turning to food aid. Cuts to social safetynets have gone too far, leading to destitution, hardship and hunger on a large scale. It is unacceptable that this is happening in the seventh wealthiest nation on the planet.” The Trussell Trust which is the biggest provider of food banks in the UK had last month reported that more than 350,000 people turned to their food banks for help in the last year, almost triple the number who received food aid in the previous year. However the report warns that the true number of hungry people could be more than half a million people, as the problem is not being monitored properly. It calls for Government agencies to record and monitor people experiencing food poverty in the UK in order to
establish more accurate numbers. Changes to crisis loan eligibility rules, delays in payments, Jobseeker’s Allowance sanctions and sickness benefit reassessments are the most common benefit changes that led to people using food banks. Niall Cooper, Church Action on Poverty CEO, and the report’s lead author, said: “The safety net that was there to protect people is being eroded to such an extent that we are seeing a rise in hunger. Food banks are not designed to, and should not, replace the ‘normal’ safety net provided by the state in the form of welfare support.” The report recommends that: · The House of Commons Work and Pensions Select Committee should conduct an urgent Parliamentary Inquiry into the rela-
tionship between benefit delay, error or sanctions, welfare reform changes and the growth of food poverty. · The Department for Work and Pensions should publish data on a regular basis on the number and type of household who are deprived of their benefits by reason of benefit delay, error or sanctions; the numbers leaving and returning to benefits after a short period of time, and the number of referrals from Jobcentre plus staff to local food banks. · The Department for Work and Pensions should commission independent monitoring of the roll-out of Universal Credit, to ensure that there is no unintentional increase in food poverty. · All referrals to food banks/emergency food aid provision, made by government agencies, should be recorded and monitored in order to establish more accurate numbers on people experiencing food poverty in the UK. · HM Treasury should make tackling tax dodging an urgent priority, including promoting robust and coordinated international action at the forthcoming G8 meeting in Northern Ireland in June - to reduce the need for future cuts in benefits. And his wife does all the cooking at home! The Carlos Primero Ingredients 250g of fillet steak 45g foie gras ½ cup Marsala wine ½ cup of demi glacé 1 mushroom 1 tsp sunflower oil 1 tsp summer truffle 1 tsp salt 1 tsp pepper 1 clove of garlic Method Chop very finely 1 mushroom and 1
clove of garlic and mix in the pan with 1 tsp of sunflower oil, 1 tsp of summer truffle, 1 tsp of salt and 1 tsp of pepper. Leave to simmer while mixing for 2 minutes. That will give you your truffle sauce. Introduce ½ cup of Marsala wine and ½ cup of demi glacé and mix with the recentlyprepared truffle sauce. Leave to simmer for 3 minutes. Next, stone grill the fillet until it’s cooked to your liking (you can also pan-fry or charcoal grill if you prefer). Move the fillet into the frying pan with the truffle sauce and leave to cook with the sauce for 2 minutes. Finally, plate it up and pan-fry the foie gras for 40 seconds on each side and then place it on top of the fillet and serve.

New 308 could leave VW Golf bunkered!
FRENCH manufacturer Peugeot are banking on their all-new 308 model to put an end to the dominance of VW’s Golf in Europe.
A release date of January 2014 is expected, and respected car magazine Auto Express was given a guided tour of the new hatchback in Paris by Gilles Vidal, Peugeot’s design chief, ahead of its public debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Key to the new car’s appeal is its quality, with a clean, sculpted look inside and out and, says Gilles: “We worked hard on the proportions to give a high level of true and perceived quality. “We’ve reduced what we call the ‘sideways overhang’ between the windows and the wheelarch edge, and have worked on the width and
muscle of the car, too.” There’s also what he calls a “hi-tech light signature”, with three claw-like LEDs at the back, LED running lights and full LED headlamps on top-spec models. Like the Peugeot 208 supermini, the new 308 is slightly smaller than the car it replaces - 2cm shorter and 4cm lower yet with more passenger room and a boot which, at 470 litres, is nearly 25% bigger than that of the VW. It’s also a lighter car,
weighing up to 140kg less than the previous model. That’s mostly through the use of the clever EMP2 modular platform, which will underpin a range of Peugeots and Citroens, including the new C4 Picasso. It means there will be a version emitting less than 85g/km of CO2 and returning more than 80mpg, while a diesel hybrid model will also feature. The interior really takes the challenge to the Golf and Audi A3 when
it comes to quality and, stresses Gilles: “A big part of the project has been an extra investment in quality materials. “And we’ve worked hard with sound engineers to make sure the sound of the doors shutting adds to the car’s quality feel.” The simple dash is dominated by a 9.7-inch touchscreen housing all the infotainment and climate-control functions, with the exception of an exquisite volume knob. The 308 also gets the
head-up instrument binnacle and small steering wheel which has been less than wellreceived in the 208 - albeit differently positioned. The very latest luxury and safety equipment will also be offered. And this hatchback won’t be the only new 308 to be produced because Peugeot are also planning an estate version, while a GTi model is also expected to arrive by 2015. There’s no word on 308 prices yet, but there is a good chance it will not be too much in excess of the current 308, which starts at just over £13,000. It will feature Peugeot’s latest styling direction, established by cars like the 208 supermini and 2008 crossover. The 308 will be the first Peugeot to use the new PSA EMP2 platform. It will debut with the Citroen C4 Picasso, scheduled later this year, and Peugeot claim it will help shed 70kg from the car’s weight, although the
new 308 will be bigger than before. That means an entry-level 308 should weigh in at around 1,280kg, which is competitive with the latest Volkswagen Golf. Peugeot also claim the car will emit 22% less CO2, thanks to a suite of measures aimed at improving economy. Specifically, they say that work to reduce friction in the drivetrain will save around 4g/ km and a stop-startequipped engine line-up will also account for a 4g/ km saving, while a new electric power steering system saves 2.5g.km. Diesel models will also get a new Selective Catalytic Reduction exhaust, which uses AdBlue to reduce NOx emissions, as well as saving around 3g/km of CO2. The new car will also keep the 308 name, with car names ending in ‘8’ intended for developed markets, while car names ending in ‘1’ will be reserved for emerging markets.
Such a Grand entrance for Renault’s funky Twin’Run RENAULT’S Twin’Run concept, a car designed to be a “spiritual” successor to the R5 Turbo and Clio V6, has been unveiled at the Monaco Grand Prix circuit. Sharing the same funky city car styling cues as the Twin’Z electric car concept that was revealed in April, the Twin’Run is a very different proposition. Rather than an ecofriendly set of batteries, it is packing a midmounted 316bhp V6 petrol engine and a raft of motorsport technology, designed as a hint towards the next-generation Twingo RS. That engine, still used in the Laguna and Espace in de-tuned form in Europe, drives the rear wheels and combines with a tubular
steel chassis borrowed from the Megane Trophy racer and lightweight fibre glass bodywork for a kerbweight of just 950kgs. It means the Twin’Run can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 4.5 seconds and go on to reach a top speed of 155mph. The major mechanicals for the concept are all taken straight from the world of racing, with a six-speed sequential gearbox, rally-style welded handbrake lever, huge brakes and a limited-slip differential at the back to improve cornering balance. It also sits on huge 18-inch alloy wheels, which are pushed right to the each corner of this compact car. The exterior styling has been heavily influenced by iconic rally cars, with

the bold orange graphics running along the roof and doors, big air-vents in front of the rear arches and a fixed rear wing. The quad LED lights at the front are just 25mm
thick and can give different light sequences that are controlled by the driver. The interior is stripped out, with just a plexiglass sheet separating the
driver from the V6 engine. The sparco bucket seats have four-point race harnesses. Axel Breun, head of concept car design for the Renault said: “Twin’Run
embodies the mad genius Renault have been known for over the decades... it’s the true heir of those racing cars that had so much appeal.” The Twin’Run, launched in the pit lane of the Monaco Grand Prix circuit before Sunday’s F1 thriller, was then driven for several flying laps around the famous track by Renault boss Carlos Tavares. He was joined by a convoy that included a Clio V6 piloted by young F1 driver Charles Pic, with rally legend Jean Ragnotti bringing up the rear in the Maxi 5 Turbo with which he had so much success in the Eighties. This concept hints at the performance potential of a possible Twingo RS model in the future.

The crowd at the Heliodoro for a noon kick-off, televised live on TV, in the third tier of the Spanish league. It was a superb effort from the Tenerife fans, and one in the eye for the “know-alls”, who were claiming a mass boycott because season-ticket holders had to pay a little extra to watch the match. I don’t think the 80,000 fans at Wembley for the Championship playoff final got in for free, either! The atmosphere was amazing. There was a cacophony of sound, colour, smoke and flares. It was great to see, and the fans started early. Over an hour before kick-off, they were singing, chanting and making themselves
heard. They were in determined mood and it was clear, very early on, that this was going to be our day. L’Hospitalet rarely get to play in front of more than 1,000 people, and sides can go one of two ways. Some rise to the occasion and others freeze. On Sunday, the visitors did the latter. The play-off system in Spain can seem a little bizarre, but for me it makes total sense. Eighty teams split into four divisions, and the winners don’t go up? Well, there is no real barometer of the strength and, judging by Sunday’s match, the leagues are lopsided. The feeling going in was that L’Hospitalet may be over-rated. And on what we saw, they would not have been top eight in Tenerife’s group. They created little
and, from very early on, it was evident that this would be a case of how many Tenerife would score. But this was no gung-ho display. It was a considered performance. There was no panicking, no overcommitment. Alberto had the game of his career, breaking up any sniff of a threat. Bruno was winning every header, and the wingers were causing mayhem. And all the time the crowd sang. And sang. And sang. The opening goal came from a sweet Luismi Loro free-kick. He was 25 yards out and looked confident as he teed the ball up. Craviotto’s five-man wall looked solid enough, but Luismi whipped the ball over them and past the outstretched arm. It was a sweet finish and cranked up the
noise to 11. It settled Tenerife and reminded L’Hospitalet that they were a long way from Barcelona. There were chances, good chances, to make it 2-0 before the break, but they were never converted. The searing heat was clearly affecting the visitors and they got leggy when Llorente powered in Tenerife’s second goal early into the second half. He was in an acre of space and went on a mazy run. Nobody closed him down and, once inside the box, there was only going to be one outcome. The hosts pressed for a third, and it came from the most unlikely of sources. Fifteen minutes from time, manager Alvaro Cervera replaced the weary Alberto. He had given everything, and on came wise owl David Medina,
whose job was to sit in front of the back four and soak up any pressure. He’s good at that, is Medina. What he is not good at is scoring. Until Sunday! A far-post cross appeared to hit the hand of Hammouch and ref Valentin Pizarro, who had a brilliant match, waved play on. The home defence froze and Medina went: “Ave it!” Think Peter Kay in the John Smith’s commercial. The ball fizzed through the air past the keeper and into the top corner! As Chris Kamara would say: “Unbelievable!” Late on, Osado notched for the visitors with their only meaningful shot on target to dampen the mood slightly. It means they have to win 2-0 to get promoted. Barring a miracle, it’s not going to happen. Tenerife are head

Gaffers still title Dreamers WE are down to the final few weeks of the season, and the Division One title is still up for grabs after a remarkable match in Los Cristianos.
With second-place Gaffers A not in action until tomorrow (Saturday), league leaders Tenerife Hammers A could all but wrap up the crown at Dreamers. It looked a banker away win, but the Dreamers’ dudes hadn’t read the script. Jambo gave Hammers the early lead, only for Steve to beat Fritzel - and then youngster Zante shocked Wez. Penguin pulled the scores level but, remarkably, Dreamers won the next three frames. Steve, Tommy and Mark did the business and at 5-2 a major shock was on the cards. Slowly, the Hammers reasserted. Fritzel beat Zante and Penguin accounted for Steve - and it was game-on when Wez took frame No10. The Gods were in a mischievous mood as Jambo faced Tommy for the third time on the night. The score was 1-1 and there was little between to the pair as Jambo sunk the black. At 6-5, Hammers A were eyeing a magnificent win, but there was one more sting in the tail. Fritzel was all over Mark, but the veteran somehow came unstuck, allowing Mark to steal the frame, a point and give Gaffers A hope. Both sides have two games to play and Hammers are still strong favourites. But they could be back in second place on frame difference before they pick up a cue. Gaffers travel to take on Hammers C tomorrow (Saturday) and there will be a good crowd for the 2pm start. And on Tuesday, Gaffers finish their season at home to Toscales A. They will be looking to rack up the frames as well, while Hammers A have a toughie at home to
Phoenix Knights. It’s a dress-rehearsal for the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup final in a few weeks, and Knights are bang in form. They were white-hot as they whitewashed Peacocks 12-0, and they couldn’t be more confident. At the start of the season, they chinned Hammers A and took the TPT Charity Shield. Congratulations to Phoenix Potters, who will finish the season with some silverware. They came from 3-1 and 4-2 down to beat nearest rivals Palms A 7-5 and clinch third spot. It’s a fine effort from the “seniors”, especially in their debut top-flight campaign. Talking of seniors,

Terrace Bar B’s Jean has claimed a fair few scalps this year. And on Sunday she beat Terrace A’s captain and sometime CW sport reporter Adi Benson. TWICE! It was a poor show from Benson, who was comfortably spanked! There was no joy for Adi, despite his side’s 9-3 win. But he did buy Jean (pictured) a drink afterwards. In fact, it was a bad week for him because on Tuesday, his Terrace A lads crashed 8-4 at Inn The Pink A, who recorded their first win since Easter. Exiles A are Division Two champions! They were crowned after Next Door were turned
over by Inn The Pink B 8-4. It has been quite a collapse for the ND lads, but credit Exiles. They have been in blistering form in 2013 and it will be interesting to see how they do in the top flight next season. Treehouse A are finishing the season strongly. They were good value for their 9-3 win at Picasso’s, while Bluebell A sneaked past Toscales B 7-5. Exiles B also secured an away win. They were too strong for Shorty’s, winning 8-4, and Hoppys’ excellent run continued with a 9-3er at Tenerife Pool Tables. Gaffers B were winners again, just getting the best of Treehouse B 7-5. But they deserve a hat-tip. They have not lost since 8th January, when they went down to league champions Exiles A!

The iconic Maracana, which has undergone an extensive renovation ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, remains one of the most famous venues in world football. England, yet to secure their place in next year’s Finals, are taking the opportunity to sample the conditions and atmosphere in the host nation’s main stadium. Roy Hodgson’s team gained a morale-boosting 2-1 win against Brazil at Wembley Stadium in February, with goals from Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard. A repeat success would be a huge boost before the decisive World Cup qualifiers in Autumn. But after Wednesday’s dismal 1-1 draw against a gallant Irish side at Wembley, they’ll need to pull off another miracle.
Rafa to manage Napoli Rafa Benitez has been appointed new manager of Napoli on a two-year deal. The 53-year-old Spaniard’s spell as interim Chelsea boss is drawing to a close, and he replaces Walter Mazzarri, who has joined Napoli’s Serie A rivals Inter. “I am very happy and very satisfied for having committed to a great club with an illustrious heritage like Napoli,” said Benitez.

Body-builder Chris displays a six pack! A GOOD number of months have passed since the Canarian Weekly caught up with local businessman and body-builder Chris Penney.

The event is a precursor to the WABBA World Championship, taking place in Budapest, Hungary, over the weekend of 15-16th June, at which he will be representing Spain. As the holiday season gets into full swing, there will be no slacking for Chris because the IBFA Mr Universe competition will be held in Sapri, Italy, from 6-8th July. He added: “These two competitions are now my goal - and I want to win!”

Roberto Martinez has resigned as manager of FA Cup winners Wigan and has his eyes set on Everton.. The 39-year-old Spaniard has been allowed to speak to Everton following Wigan’s relegation from the Premier Division, just days after beating Manchester City at Wembley. “Roberto wanted permission to move and I’ve given that,” said Wigan chairman Dave Whelan. “He has done well for us and we will always be friends.”
