THE streets of Tenerife were filled with jubilant fans on Sunday as CD Tenerife were promoted back to where they belong!
After two years in the wilderness, they secured their place in the Second Division A one step below La Liga (Real Madrid, Barcelona et al) - after winning their Segunda B play-off decider against Catalonian side CE L’Hospitalet, 3–2 on ag-

gregate. That they lost 1-0 away in Sunday’s scrappy second-leg encounter mattered not a jot to their ecstatic followers, who celebrated long and loud into the night, to the neverending accompaniment of tooting cars. More than 1,000 fans made
the trip to Catalonia, and as many as 4,000 supporters jampacked Tenerife South airport to salute their heroes. They saw them win 3-1 the previous week at the Heliodoro stadium, which was Continued on page 3.

TENERIFE ARE BACK WHERE THEY BELONG Continued from front. insurance enough to see CDT through after they had led their third division all season. The promotion to senior football after the heartache of losing last season’s play-off final brings with it a real feelgood factor, not just for the team but for the Island as a whole. It is said that football is a universal language, bringing the world together. And, hopefully, it will help draw the Island’s inhabitants closer together and formulate a sense of fighting spirit to get through the current economic chapter. Tribute must be paid to CDT’s 47-year-old coach, Álvaro Cervera Diaz, who plotted their way through the Segunda B maze with calmness and maturity all season. No wonder the players tossed him in the air on the Hospitalet pitch after the final whistle. But there was drama right to the end as the coaching staff, Diaz and all, took to the field to salute the players with seconds still remaining. They had mistaken a shrill blast of the ref’s
whistle for a foul as the final toot. Tenerife survived one more scare, however, before that vital whistle came to signal the start of their victorious cel-

ebrations. There were further, official tributes on Monday evening when a VIP reception was held for CDT players and staff at the Tenerife Cabildo, Santa Cruz, as ministers acknowledged their momentous success. Cabildo President Ricardo Melchior offered his own personal thanks to “the team, the extraordinary coaches, the backroom staff and all the employees after two tough seasons”. He added: “All this would not have been possible without the encouragement, support and commitment of the fans. “It was exciting to see more than 1,000 of them in Hospitalet, and even more so to see how the Heliodoro unites nearly 10,000 fans at all the home games. Now, they have to continue to consolidate the club in the Second Division.” It has certainly been a roller-coaster ride for Tenerife in the past few seasons. Having won promotion to La Liga in the 2009-2010 season, they slipped straight
back to the second division. Then, the following season, CDT suffered many coaching changes as panic set in among the owners, and they finally dropped into the third division (Segunda
B) for the first time in 24 years. Happily, the sun is shining again on CD Tenerife, the Heliodoro stadium and the fans, who will be filling it next season! ABOVE: CDT players and staff, plus their

Defender has defected
THE privately-owned British ship ‘Defender’, which has been detained in Santa Cruz since April, fled the port this week under cover of darkness without the correct paperwork. The former Oman Navy vessel had been detained because of irregularities in documentation of both the ship and crew. Its destination is unknown and the port authorities have declined to comment.

Tom Sharpe dies in Spain
POPULAR British author Tom Sharpe has died at his home in Llafranc, Palafrugell (Girona), following complications with diabetes. The 85-year-old humorist wrote 16 best-selling novels, including Blott on the Landscape, which was turned into a TV series. His funeral is expected to take place this weekend in Palafrugell after the arrival of his daughter, who lives in the US. His ashes will then be divided between the towns of Girona, Cambridge and Sunderland.
Dole queue depression UNEMPLOYMENT throughout Spain fell in May for the third consecutive month, but the picture was not so bright in Tenerife or the rest of the Canaries. The total number on the dole in the Canary Islands now stands at 296,362 people, according to the latest figures issued by the Ministry Employment and Social Security. Compared with May 2012, the islands have 3,134 more unemployed people, which is a 1.07% rise. In Tenerife, there was an increase of 229 (0.17%), leaving 138,884 still on the dole. But the situation is slightly more hopeful on the mainland, with 98,265 fewer people unemployed (- 1.97%), dropping the total to 4,890,928. Also last month, there was a total of 43,893 new work contracts issued in the Canaries, which was 467 fewer than in April.
Fuerteventura is shaken A SMALL earthquake, measuring 2.9 degrees on the Richter scale, was reported off the Fuerteventura coast in the early hours of Monday morning. Condé Nast Traveller travel magazine has published in its June issue an 18page special entitled, “Tenerife, the powerful volcanic cuisine”.
It is the result of a coordinated approach in April by Turismo de Tenerife, when they organised a full programme of activities on the island for a reporter and photographer from
Condé Nast. Cabildo Economic Vice President and Minister of Tourism, Carlos Alonso, emphasised that these promotional activities are very fruitful for Tenerife, “because with a cost (of the visit) that was around a thousand euros, we have an article that reaches 150,000 readers of the Spanish edition Condé Nast Traveller. “ He added that “this item also promotes the other attractions of Tenerife beyond the traditional sun and beach,
which is one of the aspects of the strategy that took some time to develop in our major traveller source markets “. The media visit took place between the 11th and 17th April and focused on gastronomy, volcanic landscapes and luxury accommodation on the island. The programme included tours of Parque Nacional del Teide, interviews with some of the most prominent chefs of the island’s gastronomic scene.
Tourism Tenerife collaborated with the hotels Iberostar Grand Mencey, Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora, as well as chefs Juan Carlos Clemente, Braulio Simancas and Seve Diaz, besides the sommelier Hugo Javier Perez. The Helidream helicopter company offered reporters a flight to several areas of the island while the agency One Day in Tenerife provided transport and made available an official tourist guide.
Minimum wage to be abolished? IN Spain, the governor of its central bank, Luis Maria Linde, has recommended that the minimum wage be scrapped on a temporary basis in an attempt to tackle unemployment.
In his first annual report since taking office last year, he has called for more flexibility in the labour market to counteract the nation’s increasing jobless population. He said, “It would be worth exploring the possibility of establishing new formulas that would allow, in special cases, temporary departures from the condi-
tions laid down in collective bargaining agreements, or exceptional mechanisms to prevent the minimum wage from acting as a constraint on specific groups of workers with most difficulties in terms of employability,” he said in the report. At present a worker in Spain receives a minimum of €645 a month. Linde also suggested making reforms to the
state pension by increasing the retirement age and changing how pensions are calculated. The report, which calls for the official age of retirement to increase from 65 to 67, recommends that calculating the amount a person receives should be based on contributions made in the last 25 years of working life rather than the last 15.

Honestly, it really was warm here last month President of the Canarian Government, Paulino Rivero, has said that the Canaries should use its geostrategic position to play a “major role” between Europe, Africa and America.
Various studies place the islands in a setting similar to that of Singapore for Asia, Miami and America. At the opening of the World Port Strategy Forum, held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Paulino Rivero said that the archipelago has a very good port and airport infrastructure, political stability, both social and legal, good services, and with important tax incentives, which, in his opinion, “can provide investors with a platform of Islands to look at America and Africa.” The president noted that the identification of the Canary Islands as a hub between three continents has been discov-
ered by international organisations like the Red Cross, the World Food Bank and UNICEF. He also recalled the fact that multinationals already use the Canaries as a platform to extend its economic activity towards Africa. He therefore asked the participants of the meeting using the geostrategic position of the islands to generate economic activity looking at America and Africa, “the continent of the opportunities of the century”. In this regard, he said that the Canaries have
to make a “firm commitment” to Africa, both for the opportunities to internationalize the economy of the islands, as the possibility of generating development in the neighbouring continent. For his part, President of the Port Authority, Pedro Rodriguez Zaragoza, said the “intense commercial activity” that has developed the port of Santa Cruz in the last year, especially in emerging countries, we hope will continue. “ The vice-president of the Cabildo de Tener-
ife, Carlos Alonso, said the port of Granadilla, the two terminals of the port of Santa Cruz and its two airports have turned the island into a hub of three continents, so I hope that this forum will serve to strengthen partnerships to support the development of the island. Finally, the mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, stressed that the port is “one of the pillars that sustain its economic”, so that the city “will provide everything needed to attract investment.”
DESPITE what many people believe here in the South, the Canary Islands averaged warmer weather last month than usual for the time of year. There was definitely a nip in the air at times, but it was far worse on the mainland where, on the whole, it was the coldest on record since 1985. Minimum temperatures fell to minus figures in the centre and north of the country. The average temperature throughout the country, which sees a huge year-round variation - from English-style weather in the north to near-subtropical in the Canaries - was 14.6ºC, some 1.3ºC lower than usual. The State meteorological agency AEMET says the only areas of the country to escape the cold snap were the southern regions of Andalucía and Murcia, and the Canaries. And in Santander, in the northern Atlantic region of Asturias, people experienced their coldest May since 1951. Typically, for early spring, sharp contrasts
in temperature were seen throughout Spain, with the end of May and the period between 15th21st being considerably cooler and the 6-13th being hotter than average. During the latter period, the highest maximum day temperature recorded was in Valencia airport on 7th May, when the mercury soared to 35ºC, followed by Málaga Airport on 9th May, which hit 33.6 degrees. At the other end of the scale, a hailstorm and torrential rain in the provinces of Alicante and Valencia a fortnight ago left a popular Alicante beach completely covered in white stuff! In mountainous regions and northern and inland parts, frost, ice and even snow was also witnessed last month. Yet despite a number of torrential downpours in coastal areas of Spain, the month of May was actually 25% drier than usual for the time of year, based on records from 1971-2000. So don’t complain about the cloud at least it’s warm. Until next week…

And the National Court insists the action must be carried out within three months. This ruling is the outcome of a case brought against the store by
two of Spain’s leading unions, the labourers’ commission (CCOO) and the general workers’ union (UGT). They maintained that the store had put in place all necessary measures to ensure equality in the workplace barring two elements, one of which was wages. A spokesperson for the store said the majority of their staff were
women and that they were fully committed to equality. Also, all actions taken so far in this respect had been “unanimously agreed” with the unions. The verdict also recognised the “major advances in achieving the objectives” of the store’s equality plan and a “considerable improvement” in promoting female workers to more senior positions within
the company, added the spokesperson. In addition to levelling salaries for male and female workers, the other equality-related issue involved wage “complements” - parts of routine sums added to the basic pay for different job categories. These include transport, or fixed monthly bonuses for graduates or staff with foreign languages.

Nine people, all Russian and Belarusian nationals, have been arrested in Santa Cruz de Tenerife; house searches have also been carried out in the South of the island. Suspicions arose at the end of last year as the numbers of people requesting NIE numbers by citizens of Russian origin increased immensely, their apparent purpose was to perform various business transactions in Spain. However, these businesses were not formalized and many of the applications referred to buying and selling of vehicles, repeatedly containing the same seller. After examining numerous requests, offi-
cials found that many of the Russian passports had been stamped with false permits therefore artificially falsifying and prolonging the period of legal stay in Spain. The investigation concluded that, on the one hand, these changes in travel documents were made outside the national territory and, second, that it was not
an isolated case, but it was an international criminal organisation dedicated to illegal immigration of Russians, supplying documents to those residing on the island. Evidence included false flight plans, fictitious hotel reservations, simulated employment certificates and even false powers of attorney.

An emergency system on board the singleengine Cirrus SR22 was deployed, releasing a parachute to lower the plane down. A Police spokesman said the pilot was a 76-year-old man from London, who had suffered minor injuries. Nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution while the fire ser-
vice made the scene safe. Staverton Airport, which is 2.5 miles (4km) from the scene, said the 4-seat aircraft had been on its way to land there at the time of the crash. “The pilot deployed an emergency parachute system and the aircraft landed in a residential garden near the Hatherley area of Cheltenham,” said a spokesperson. David Shatford, from Cheltenham, watched the drama from scaffolding while working on a nearby home. “We heard a big loud
noise, [the plane] was spinning in the parachute and landed in the trees about 12ft away from us,” he said. “We stood back, and then I went towards the plane - me and another gentleman - and helped the pilot out. He was all shook up and didn’t talk much.” The parachute was designed by BRS Aerospace based in Minnesota, USA, in 1975. Company director Boris Popov had the idea following a 400ft (120m) fall he survived in a collapsed hand glider. “I think this is our 295th person that’s been saved with the use of our system,” said current CEO and president Larry Williams. “Here’s a guy who literally was able to deploy the system and walk away, essentially uninjured, from this. “Probably the most gratifying thing in terms of what we do is when someone comes around and says: ‘Hey, I deployed your system and it saved my life’. That’s very rewarding.”

Latvian Euros
Latvia will use the euro as its currency from 2014.
It will become the 18th member of the single currency bloc. European Union finance ministers are due to formally endorse the European Commission’s positive recommendation at a meeting on 9th July. However, not all Latvians like the idea that they will be joining a currency that is already used by approximately 330 million people. EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Com-
missioner Olli Rehn told a news conference in Brussels: “We have concluded that Latvia is ready to adopt the euro on January 1, 2014.” The country will be the poorest in the euro zone and none of the major eastern European economies, such as Poland or the Czech Republic, have set dates for a move to the euro. “Latvia’s desire to adopt the euro is a sign of confidence in our common currency. Those who predicted a disintegration of
the euro were simply wrong,” Rehn added. To adopt the euro, Latvia had to meet five entry criteria: low inflation and long-term interest rates, a stable exchange rate and low public debt and deficits. Latvia which has a population of 2 million plunged into economic turmoil in 2008 when the global financial crisis popped a real estate bubble and toppled one of its leading banks. It lost about a fifth of economic output and was forced to take a bailout from the International
Monetary Fund and European Union. Estonia, which adopted the euro in 2011, and Lithuania, which wants to switch in 2015. “Latvia’s experience shows that a country can successfully overcome macroeconomic imbalances, however severe, and emerge stronger from the crisis with a solid recovery,” Rehn said, noting that it will have the strongest economic growth in all of the 27-nation EU this year. Latvian Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovs-
kis said switching to the euro from the lat currency would foster growth, bring increased foreign investment and upgrades of its credit ratings. Dombrovskis has pressed on with euro entry even though polls show most Latvians are opposed to switching currencies. “Latest polls show 38 percent support for euro adoption,” Dombrovskis told reporters. “We believe we might reach a majority supporting euro adoption at the moment when Latvia introduces the
euro. Government has to work on that.” But people remain skeptical due to attachment to the lat, fears the euro zone is wobbly and that its introduction could lead to price rises in a country where many people remain poor. “The lat is one of our national treasures. We could travel abroad and boast that the lat has a higher value than, for example, the euro,” said Arvis Krastins, 23, a design student, referring to the fact that the lat is worth just over one euro.
End to Eurotunnel’s Dover ferry service Eurotunnel may no longer offer a ferry service from Dover to Calais if a ruling by the UK Competition Commission is upheld. The Dover to Calais route began operating last August after the purchase of three ships from Sea France, which went into liquidation in November 2011, they were then leased out last summer to the new MyFerryLink service, which is run primarily by former Sea France employees. The Commission say
Page 12
that the firm’s large market share would lead to price rises for passengers and freight customers. Eurotunnel already runs the channel rail tunnel, including the Le Shuttle Dover to Calais car rail service. It said it will appeal the decision. “By adding ferries to its existing channel tunnel business, Eurotunnel would increase its market share to over half and prices would rise,” the Commission said in a state-
ment accompanying the report. Eurotunnel responded that the Commission’s decision was “not based on any concrete facts, but solely upon a random association of virtual hypothesis”. “This decision by the Competition Commission will reduce the choice of services across the Straits of Dover to the detriment of the consumer,” said Jacques Gounon, the company’s chairman and chief executive.

Posh Fortnum's heads for St Pancras station FORTNUM & Mason, the posh store in London’s Piccadilly, plans to open its first new stand-alone outlet in Britain since 1707.
It has, for more than 300 years, served exotic foods at upmarket prices to millions of customers seeking a touch of quintessential Englishness. Now, however, Fortnum’s has signed a lease to open a shop in the former ticket hall at London’s King’s Cross-St Pancras station, home of the capital’s Eurostar rail terminal. The shop is scheduled to open later this year, highlighting the continuing ambitions of the billionaire Weston family, who own the store and also have a large stake in the company
behind discount highstreet retailer Primark. Although Fortnum’s has opened previous concessions in airports such as Heathrow’s Terminal 5, the stand-alone store will be designed as a fuller reflection of the

retailer’s brand. It will offer a table tea service, as well as takeaways for busy rail passengers. Ewan Venters, chief executive of Fortnum & Mason, said: “St Pancras is London’s Grand Central Station, It’s a
great opportunity. We feel the centre of gravity in London is moving north and east from Piccadilly.” He added: “Thirty-five million people a year go through the station, and nearly a quarter of
those people are going there to shop rather than to travel.” Mr Venters, who joined the company last year from Selfridge’s, also owned by the Westons, previously worked at Sainsbury’s and Brakes,
the food services supplier. Fortnum’s, best known for its huge range of loose-leaf tea and picnic hampers, has held a number of royal warrants during its history. Recently, though, the Piccadilly store has been the site of protests by UK Uncut tax protesters, and campaigners against the sale of foie gras. The new store, which will create 25 jobs, comes as many of London’s luxury retailers have defied the bleak economic environment to post sales gains. Fortnum’s reported a 17.3% sales rise in December, buoyed by surging online orders and the continuing effects of last year’s Olympics and Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Harrods, now owned by a Qatari state fund, is also thought to have seen healthy trading in recent months.

Recession buster bra FAMILY-owned UK retailer Poundworld has just launched the world’s cheapest ever bra - at just £1. The Yorkshire-based company which began trading back in 2004, expects more than a million customers to snap up its latest bargain over the coming months; which is a challenge to the high street’s biggest names. The new piece of lingerie has been trialled in selected Poundworld stores and is on sale in the UK today (Friday). The bra comes in black, white and natural tone nylon, and sizes range from medium to extra large. Manufacturers maintain that the bra’s unique and ‘invisible’ curve-hugging design
gives women the perfect fit and a smooth shape with no unsightly bumps or lumps. The packaging states: ‘Say goodbye to bad posture, neck, shoulders, chafing and post operative aches and pains.’ Poundworld Trading Director Chris Edwards Junior said: ‘Times are tough and people are looking to make savings wherever possible. ‘We’re confident that there is no other product like this available on the market worldwide at the same incredible low value. ‘Due to its runaway success, we predict we’ll sell over one million in the next few months and we’re already looking into other colours and styles.’

A paranoid schizophrenic 32-year-old man who killed a Welsh mother-of-three and admitted attempting to murder seven other people during a series of hit-and-run incidents in Cardiff in October 2012 has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act. Matthew Tvrdon will be detained at Ashworth high security psychiatric hospital, Merseyside. He killed 31-year-old Karina Menzies, injured 17 other people, including seven children, during a halfhour of “madness and mayhem” across five different locations in Cardiff on Friday 19th October 2012. The tax office worker denied the murder of Ms Menzies, pleading guilty instead to the lesser charge of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. He also entered guilty pleas to seven counts of attempted murder, and 12 other charges including
assaulting children and a police officer as well as dangerous driving. Tvrdon was driving a white three-tonne van, against the flow of traffic on Cardiff ’s busy roads. He continued for 8 miles, it is said deliberately targeting women and children, running over some victims a second time after he had already knocked them down. Many of the victims have suffered life-
changing injuries as a result. Welsh Police put an end to the episode after a high speed chase and a skillful “fishtail manoeuvre” which spun his vehicle to a halt. The senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Ceri Hughes said: “On behalf of South Wales Police I would like to express our gratitude to the victims and witnesses for their help
and bravery and also to the firefighters, ambulance staff and hospital staff who worked together in unprecedented circumstances to provide the best possible care to those involved in these tragic events. “We hope that today’s outcome helps all those affected, particularly Karina’s devastated family, to somehow now move forward with their lives.”

Why Kristen’s By Maggie Lennard
WHAT a night, what a final, what amazing talent - and what a fabulous winner in Kristen White.
The 16-year-old Bristol student, who won her Premier Bar heat while on holiday, flew back last week with some of her family members for Saturday’s Grand Final at Karting Las Americas. And now she is flying high again! Kristen wowed the judges and the packed house by singing the same song as in the Premier Bar heat: Eva Cassidy’s version of What a Wonderful World , in her crystal-clear voice. It won an ovation and proved enough to take her through to the finalthree sing-off, in which she pulled off a fabulous victory by again repeating her sing-off choice of Liza Minelli’s Maybe This Time
from Cabaret. Of the other two finalists, Terry Saunders finished runner-up, with Amber Maene in third spot. But let me take you right back to the beginning, when we had 12 finalists, three trophies and one main cash prize of 1,000 euros to the winner of Tenerife Loves Karaoke 2013. The room was packed even by 8.15pm, and it was standing room only pretty soon after that. We started at two minutes past nine (not too shabby for Tenerife!) with the Maggie does Gangnam Style video. Shortly afterwards, the finalists arrived on stage and were introduced to the bulging audience. It was evident, even at this point, that some finalists had brought vocal entourages with them, and it all added to the electric atmosphere. The judges
Tenerife Loves Karaoke 2013 – Finals Night
for the final were then brought on stage: last year’s winner, Yasmin Khan; Donna Letley, from the Sound of Musicals: Oasis Fm DJ Jamie Drew, and EmCan Media chief Chris Elkington. They all outlined what they would be looking for - and, indeed, what would be required from the finalists to take the title. This year, rather than have the running order drawn out in advance, it was performed live, one singer at a time, keeping all the finalists on their toes, and the audience in place and on the edge of their seats. The unenviable task of singing first fell to Lau-
ra Day, winner from the Brewers Droop heat. Laura stuck to the song she sang in the heat, Blue’s Breathe Easy and belted it out from beginning to end, despite apparent nerves. It received an excellent reception from the whole room (and this support was extended to each and every act by almost the entire audience) and the judges whirred into action. Second to go was 16-year-old student Amber, winner from heat 11 at Leonardo’s. Amber also stuck to a familiar tune, again providing a spine-tingling version of Jennifer Hudson’s And I am Telling You. Amber had just two
supporters with her, yet the whole crowd rose to give her a deserved ovation as she hit the final note. The youngest finalist was drawn next, student Cassie Kemp, who was just three days shy of her 16th birthday.
Cassie had been collecting trophies right up until her win at the Terrace Bar. Her sweet voice, singing Birdy’s Skinny Love, reduced the room to total silence and, again, it was well-delivered. By some quirk of fate, we went from the youngest to the oldest contender in 71-yearold Bobby Webber (runner up from Leonardo’s), who reverted to the song which had secured him a few trophies along the way: Luther Vandross’ Dance with my Father. It was a beautiful rendition, and Bobby put great emotion into his performance. Terry, the 25-year-old Thomson Holiday adviser who won at The Pub in Torviscas, had a massive group of friends and colleagues supporting him. He chose a song we hadn’t heard him sing before, Bring Him Home, from
The finalists L-R: Sonmy, Craig, Laura, Pete, Alaya, Annaleece, Kristen, Terry, Alberto, Amber and Bobby.

Les Misérables, and it was simply stunning. Tissues were in abundance in the audience - and even on stage as two of the judges had “dust in their eyes”. Ovation number two. Closing the first half, we had Craig Seeney, who won the second heat at Churchills. After a cou-
p l e of song changes, Craig decided on the song that won him the singoff in the heat, Adele’s Make You Feel My Love. It was again beautifully performed, and in copy key, too. After a break, we resumed with Alberto Andrade, the Portu-

guese/Ecuadorian/Yorkshireman winner from Dreamer’s Bar. Alberto stayed safe with Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s One Sweet Day, which was an excellent way to kick off the second half. Our Place winner, Tarot reader Alaya Shonyata, was drawn to go next. Looking gorgeous in a specially-made dress, Alaya launched into Etta James’ At Last, and it was goosebump time again all around the room. Kristen went in ninth with her beautiful version of What a Wonderful World and won the night’s third ovation. Another finalist who flew back from the UK to be at the final was Clouseau’s winner and semi-retired carpenter Peter Bruce, and it was his turn next. UB40’s Kingston Town had the same effect in the final as it did in the heat; people got out of their seats and danced. It was a great rendition, and again echoed the fun side of karaoke
in the midst of a fierce competition. Our penultimate contestant was recentlyqualified teacher Annaleece Feeney, winner from Springer’s, and the third finalist to have returned from the UK. Annaleece performed another note-perfect interpretation of Mariah Carey’s Hero. Sonmy Díaz Ulloa, winner of the first heat at Harvey’s, was left to go last. It can’t have been easy waiting all that time and seeing everyone else perform first, but Sonmy took to the stage looking fresh and glamorous. She chose the Diana Ross power ballad When You Tell Me That You Love Me - the song that secured her place in the sing-off at Harvey’s. It was a truly emotional, powerful performance and brought the qualifying round to a close. The contestants were then brought back to the stage for the elimination. They stepped forward as their names were called out to hear
their fate: going home, or in the final three! Amber and Kristen were first to go through as, one by one, the contestants left the stage. At the end, only Alaya and Terry were left; one would go home, and the other would progress to the sing-off. It was tense, and the audience were shouting for both in equal measure. But the judges had scored Terry higher, and the roof was raised when his name was announced. Amber sang first and chose Hurt by Christina Aguilera. As in the heat, her first song was stronger than her second, although she made a very good job of a demanding song. In terms of raw vocal talent, Amber is definitely one to watch for the future. Terry followed, and sang another song we hadn’t heard him sing before. He chose Tom Jones’ version of the Shirley Bassey classic I Who have Nothing in the heat, and decided
to stick to Tom for the sing-off. This time, though, he opted for I’ll Never Fall In Love Again, and it was just brilliant! The control and range of Terry’s voice - and his sweet falsetto - has to be heard to be believed. Last up was Kristen with Maybe This Time and, as soon as she started, the room fell totally silent. It was a thoroughly-polished performance, with the last line, “maybe this time, I’ll win” possibly prophetic for a second time. That was that; all over bar the final result. Chris Elkington presented the third-place trophy to Amber, and then it was time to find out who had won. So deafening was the noise as people shouted “Terry, Terry” and “Kristen, Kristen” that I wasn’t sure they would hear when the announcement was made. And then we knew: Kristen White was crowned winner of Tenerife Loves Karaoke 2013, and with the title came her 1,000-euro prize and the chance to return to sing at the TEAs (Tenerife Entertainment Awards) in October. Terry retained his composure, even though he must have felt a tweak of disappointment as he received his trophy from Chris - and a massive cheer from the audience. Of course, there are people to thank: sponsors Tenerife Island Rentals and The Sound of Musicals; the bar staff at the venue; the judges; the owners of the venues which hosted the heats; John Zammit (responsible for setting up the venues for heats, preparing all the behind-thescenes things, and even Tweeting live from the final), and the audience for their fabulous support of all the finalists. Above all, extra-special thanks must go to the contestants for making it an amazing night. It was a pleasure meeting and getting to know you all. Maybe we’ll do it again sometime. Next year, perhaps!

little ones and, hopefully, next week we will be able to report that at least one lucky “orphan” has found a new home. The dogs were fortunate to have their own pool in which to cool off after all their exertions in the agility competitions. Lots of the rescue dogs joined in the fun, as well as many adopted dogs coming back to visit
with their owners. Marion Fernandez, who runs the animal sanctuary, would like to say a big thank-you to everyone for helping to make the event such a success. Accion del Sol is committed to its educational programme, which continued last week with children visiting from the Charco del Pino Colegio, in Granadilla, as well as other children from surrounding schools. With so many dogs coming into the refuge on a daily basis, it’s certainly a busy time at the

Tipping point A TripAdvisor study of nearly 7,000 travellers reveals that Brits are still tipping less due to the continued weak economy. In addition, British travellers remain unsure of what is expected when tipping abroad as we remain Europe’s least informed on tipping practices. “With continued uncertainty over the economy, it’s not just the big travel decisions such as ‘Do I go on holiday?’ or ‘Where to go?’ that are affected,” commented Angus Struthers, TripAdvisor spokesperson. “Being cost conscious applies to all levels of a holiday, including tipping – the often relied upon source of income for many in the service industry.”
For the third consecutive year, 31% of Brits said they’re tipping less on holiday due to financial concerns: They are giving smaller tips or have stopped tipping entirely on holiday because of the economy. However, the situation appears to be improving having reduced from 33% in 2012 and 35% in 2011 · The effect of the economy is affecting Italian and Spanish travellers considerably more, with 59% and 54% respectively of respondents from these markets stating that they tip less or don’t tip any more when on holiday. · German travellers tipping habits are the least affected in Europe by the economy, with 21% tipping less or not at all and are the nation surveyed most likely to always give a tip (10%). Brits are trailing behind the rest of Europe on tipping knowledge as UK travellers are revealed as Europe’s most confused tippers for the third year
Page 20
running – and it’s getting worse: · Just 19% of Brits (down from 46% last year) always know what is expected tipping-wise in other countries and therefore not surprisingly are the nation most likely to adopt a general tipping rule, with the most common amount being 10% of the total bill being applied by one in three (32%). · Other European travellers put the UK to shame: on average, 30% of European respondents claim they know what they’re expected to tip abroad, with Germans still claiming the crown of most informed – 74% said they always know the rules Friendliness of service is the ultimate deciding factor when tipping in a restaurant for Brits: · 62% of Brits claim that friendliness of service is of the highest importance when tipping a waiter along with 58% of other European travellers · For 15% of Russians, tipping a waiter depends on attractiveness of staff while 4% of Brits claim to base their tips on how easy on the eye a waiter is Confusion around tipping comes with consequences: · Only 2% of Brits (the second lowest behind Germans (1%)) claim never to tip when on holiday · 7% of Brits say they’ve had a holiday ruined by a tipping experience · 14% of Brits say they’ve been confronted by a waiter about a tip · Over a quarter (28%) of Brits feel tipping should be abolished and included in the bill · 10% of Brits say tipping on holiday makes them anxious, compared to 8% of all Europeans surveyed · 20% of Brits say the US tipping culture puts them off travelling to the country, while just 10% of all Europeans surveyed agree “The tipping culture can be cause for anxiety, and where other nations claim to know what’s expected in different countries, for Brits the general solution seems to be to tip nearly all the time and apply a general 10% of the total bill rule.” concluded TripAdvisor’s Angus Struthers.

In the final week of the competition, each chef must choose their protege before coming together to compete in the grand final. Tom is looking for a protege who can absorb his style of modern Scottish cooking, using the best of Scottish ingredients and combining them with classic French cookery techniques. Tom, who served his apprenticeship alongside Pierre Koffman at La Tante Claire, asks the students to cook two iconic Koffman dishes salmon cooked in duck fat and his legendary Pistachio Souffle. After watching the students cook these classics, Tom has one final test for them before he must choose who will represent him in the final. He opens up the kitchen larder to the two young cooks, who must come up with one dish to impress. Only the student that copes best with the pressure will become Tom's protege.

Operation Snow Tiger BBC2, 20.00 The Siberian tiger is one of Earth’s rarest and most elusive animals. It’s so rare, more scientists have been to space than have seen one in the wild. In this new two-part series Operation Snow Tiger, Liz Bonnin, a tiger biologist, travels to the Russian Far East with wildlife cameramen to help a team of scientists studying these big cats in the brutal Russian winter. Their goal is to uncover the hidden world of this mysterious predator, determine why they are declining and what can be done to save them. With perhaps just 300 Siberian tigers left, each is precious. Starting their search north of Vladivostok, the team find evidence of males, but no breeding females. Their search is interrupted when three cubs are spotted alone, their mother feared dead. Only four months old, the cubs are not able to survive on their own and must be rescued as soon as possible. Cameraman Max Hug Williams joins local conservation rangers searching the forest for the orphaned cubs as a blizzard approaches – capturing remarkable footage in the process. Meanwhile Liz and Russian scientists track a female tiger in the snow. A dramatic hunt begins to save the life of one of the world’s rarest animals. But have they arrived in time?

Formula 1: Canadian Grand Prix BBC1, 18.15
Suzi Perry presents live coverage of the Canadian Grand Prix from Montreal. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been a happy hunting ground for Lewis Hamilton in recent years. In 2012 he won his third Grand Prix there thanks to a sparkling performance in his McLaren when, remarkably, he became the seventh different winner of a Grand Prix in the opening seven races of last season. Now with Mercedes, he will be hoping to build on a promising start with his new team. Three-time world champion Sebastian Vettel will be desperate to break his duck having never won at the circuit. It is worth noting that in the past 11 years, only three races in Canada have been won by the man who started on pole - Fernando Alonso in 2006 and Hamilton in 2007 and 2010.

Betty Thomas directs this comedy about one of America's favourite TV families of the 70s. Except it's now the 90s and, while the world has moved on, they haven't. Parents Mike and Carol and their brood are now irritating anachronisms rather than the loved, slightly goofy family of yesteryear. But worse, they've forgotten to pay their property taxes and their neighbour Mr Dittmeyer sees his chance to buy their home, orange Formica kitchen fittings and all, and raze it to the ground as part of one of his property development schemes.
Agatha Christie's Poirot: Elephants Can Remember ITV1, 20.00
Whilst Poirot (David Suchet) is pre-occupied with investigating the strange and gruesome murder of an elderly psychiatrist, his old friend, the crime writer Ariadne Oliver (Zoë Wanamaker), has a case of her own to solve. She is pressed by the loathsome Mrs Burton-Cox (Greta Scacchi) to uncover the truth of two decade-old deaths; were they murders or a double-suicide? And if it was murder then who killed whom? Did General Ravenscroft (Adrian Lukis) shoot his wife, Margaret (Annabel Mullion), Ariadne’s old school chum, or did Margaret shoot him? In spite of Mrs Burton-Cox’s impertinence, Ariadne can’t help but be curious, and she takes it upon herself to set matters straight when her god-child, Celia (Vanessa Kirby), the dead couple’s daughter, begs her to uncover the truth. However, Poirot’s skills remain engaged elsewhere, as the case of the dead professor twists and turns, with Poirot reluctant to accept that his good friend, the psychiatrist’s son, Doctor Willoughby, is himself responsible. So Ariadne sets off on a journey into the past to dig for the facts, but theories abound as memories get muddled and old secrets remain stubbornly hidden. Before long though, the old Ravenscroft puzzle is pulled sharply into the present-day, when the life of Desmond (Ferdinand Kingsley), Mrs Burton-Cox’s son and Celia’s intended, is threatened by a mysterious figure in black… Poirot’s already twitching mind is immediately piqued, and when he realises the murder of his old professor is connected with Mrs Oliver’s investigation, they join formidable forces. With the help of the great detective’s little grey cells, a trip to Paris, a wig-maker and the evidence of a clever dog, Poirot manages to penetrate the fog of memory to uncover the truth of two long-ago deaths, and how that tragic story inspired the vengeful present-day killer whom he himself has been hunting

In Cheshire, one of the richest areas in the country, domestics Chris and Sarah get to see how the other half lives as they clean the multimillion pound homes owned by footballers and celebrities. In London, pest controller Jim England fights an endless battle with the capital's pigeons which have infested its tower blocks. In Blackpool, a team of hotel cleaners race to get the rooms ready in time for the week's new guests, some of whom have very high standards - even though they have only paid for a two-star holiday. Richard Chisnell and his team of toilet inspectors do their utmost to save our public loos from closure and search for lavatorial excellence wherever they can.
Child Genius Channel 4, 21:00
This four-part documentary series follows the lives of some of the country's cleverest children and their families. Most of the children have IQs in the top 0.1% of the population. But growing up gifted can have its challenges; and behind many a child genius, there's often a determined parent, with this series revealing the different approaches to parenting a child whose intelligence is off the scale. Earlier this year, 21 highly gifted children aged seven to 11 were selected to take part in a competition run in association with British Mensa, to find the UK's ultimate child genius.

Caravans. Business competition. The candidates are called to the Tower of London, where Lord Sugar tells them that their latest task is to sell products at the Motorhome and Caravan Show, and they are left with no doubt that he expects them all to impress. Half head off to test drive camping accessories and win over suppliers, but when both teams choose the same products, there is disappointment in store for some. Both project managers head straight to the show to select a high ticket item worth thousands, but matching products to punters proves a tricky task and piles on the pressure for both teams. Happy Families: The Parents’ Tale ITV1, 21.00
Filled with hilarity and heartbreak, ITV’s new documentary series, Happy Families, looks behind Britain’s net curtains for an intimate insight into how we as families live, love and laugh. More than the individual story of each family, by capturing life issues which resonate across the generational, social, cultural and geographical fabric of the country, the series sets out to show what it means to be a family in Britain today. With cameras placed on fixed rigs throughout the home, capturing every moment from breakfast to bedtime, we filmed four families for one week each. From the north of England to the south coast, toddlers to teenagers, child birth to marriage, from the breadline to middle class comfort – we interweave our four families to reveal what makes them the same and sets them apart, and what it means to be a happy family. Each week we hear about family life from a different family member: The Parents’ Tale – a job never done; A Mother’s Love – once a mum, forever a mum; The Dads’ Tale - Dads – what are they for?, and finally, The Tale of Marriage - what keeps us together and drives us apart .

Entertainment
When the going gets tough …do the tough get going? By Jamie Drew OVER here on the entertainment circuit, it’s said that when the going gets tough, you have to ride out the storm.
But that doesn’t rhyme and, unlike Billy Ocean’s hit, it wouldn’t even make a good Boyzone song. The last couple of months have been very quiet in the showbars, with regular acts being cancelled in venues because of a lack of audiences. Having said that, some are lucky enough not to have been affected. This Island used to be a magnet for cabaret shows of all genres, with a saturation of venues to choose from. But since the introduction of “All Inclusive” hotels, a lot of venues have had to close or cancel their live entertainment for long periods and, in some cases, for good. Artistes have had to
take a cut in fees in order to keep working, bars have been forced to close or change hands and, over several years, this has had an effect on how the circuit functions. It doesn’t help, either, that airlines are able to hike up the price of flights during school holidays, when it is already difficult for UK families to afford a vacation abroad. So now, typical Tenerife entertainers have to be versatile and be prepared to use their skills outside of their comfort zone.
Instead of being just a singer or a tribute act, an artiste will also be working as a DJ or karaoke host, performing on the limited stages available. This versatility has proved to those involved that having more than one string to your bow is useful during the quiet times. And being able to sidestep into other entertaining roles has paid their bills! There is one area, however, that never seems to struggle and is always buzzing with tourists, and that’s
Parque de la Paz, in Las Americas. It has a lovely strip of bars and restaurants all maintaining a high standard of entertainment, offering variety, quality and well-equipped bars that are comfortable and friendly. If you are lucky enough to be one of the many entertainers working along there, then you’ll know this strip provides your bread-and-butter gigs. And if you look at the names that arise year in, year out on the Tenerife Entertainment Awards,
Wham, incorporating all the aspects of entertainment that engage a watching crowd: strong vocals, comedic banter, costumes, fab song choice and audience participation. Shiel is non-stop on stage once the show starts, beginning with a few George Michael classics which easily win the audience over with popular hooklines to which they can sing along. He then moves into the Wham part of the show, in which members of the audience are selected and dressed to play the parts of Andrew Ridgley and Pepsi & Shirley. It’s obvious Shiel has put a lot of thought into this show and it’s still relatively new, so he’s tweaking it as he goes along.

host Craig Hevern and nightly shows from the likes of the much-loved Cy Benson, Dee Daniels and Paul Monroe. Dominic James, lead male vocalist from The Sound Of Musicals, can also be seen in there once a week, performing some amazing songs from his own show. Alternatively, you may like the pub-type atmosphere, in which case you could do no wrong than pay a visit to The Hole In The Wall, where you will find Fergal Flaherty, winner of the Best Solo Performer award at last year’s TEAs. There is so much to say about PDLP - too much for one page, anyway but there is something for everyone, whether it’s simple bar banter from Simon “Fish” and Mike in The Highlander, or karaoke nights in Frankies Music Bar. This is not only the place to be if you are on holiday, but also where most of the work is for entertainers. I know this is a cliché, but it really is the place to be!
Boxing clever - via karaoke
What’s new… THIS is going to be a new feature every fortnight, highlighting a new show or new artiste to the scene. We begin with Shiel Campbell’s new show, which I went to see last week at the First & Last pub in Fanabe. Shiel is a seasoned pro and knows what is expected by holidaying audiences, having performed here and in other resorts around the world, including Cyprus. I’m told they have a vibrant entertainment scene over there, though, not a patch on our beloved Tenerife. The Eighties and Nineties were memorable musical eras, so it was no surprise that Mrs Campbell’s wee laddie came up with the idea of tributing the songs of George Michael &
you will also find 80% of them on the billboards along PDLP. A tourist would have to spend a fortnight’s holiday to visit all the bars along this strip in order to get a feel for the place. And by the end, he/she would still not have seen everything this strip to offer. There is a fabulous live band in The Bulls Head called The Vagabonds, whose musicians are some of the best I’ve seen and heard, and certainly worth a visit to the biggest bar along there. Comedians like the mighty George King can be seen regularly in The Brahms & Liszt Bar and packs the place out whenever he’s on. The Corner Bar, right next door, is home to some fabulous shows, including Scotland’s most popular comedian in Tenerife, Billy Porter, and Darren and Dee an amazingly-talented husband-and-wife musical duo, performing as System X. The Highland Paddy is a fun pub offering karaoke, with resident
I am certain this show is a winner because it ticks all the boxes. If you have a venue looking to book an exciting show, then get in touch with Shiel quickly before he fills his diary. You can contact
Shiel Campbell direct at 682 531 173, or via the Facebook page Tenerife Entertainers Available Tonight. Good luck to all the new acts arriving for the summer - and the existing ones reinventing themselves!
WE are often visited by sports stars, and this week I bumped into boxer Jamie Moore in The Brewers Droop Showbar. The former British, European and Commonwealth light-middleweight champion was crooning away on karaoke while enjoying a family break. A few years ago in the old Full Monty, I challenged him to a bout on the boxing machine, and to my surprise - and his - I beat him. But this time he was on form, and a rematch in the Brewers saw him take my title and my Calvin Klein belt. He beat me by just two points. Rematch next year.

UK property hits the roof
Ikea founder is stepping down - after a lifetime! I N G V A R KAMPRAD, the 87-year-old who founded Ikea in Sweden when he was just 17, is standing down.
His son, Mathias, will take the reigns at the furniture giant in what the company calls a well-prepared “generational shift”. Kamprad, who founded the furniture business in 1943, is leaving Sweden’s Inter Ikea Group, which controls the Ikea brand, while another company called Ikea Group owns most of the chain’s stores. Mathias, in his 40s, will replace 70-year-old Per Ludvigsson as chairman of the board. His father remains senior advisor on the board of the foundation that owns the Ikea Group, and he has pledged to continue visiting stores and factories. Kamprad Snr said: “I see this as a good
time for me to leave the board. This does not mean that I will stop working. My passion and engagement for the many people, the Ikea concept, simplicity and cost-consciousness, is as strong as ever. “I will continue to share ideas and views, and I will continue to spend time in the stores and in the factories.” Ikea started out selling pencils, postcards and other merchandise via mail-order. It was not until furniture manufacturing was introduced to the business that it was gradually turned into a global brand. Last month, Bloomberg estimated Mr Kamprad’s worth at £34.6bn, but he is renowned for his thrifty lifestyle. In 2012, the company “deeply regretted” using forced labour to manufacture some of its goods in the former East Germany. More recently, it was caught up in the European food scandal.

IN the UK property prices have seen their best annual increase for more than two years.
During the month of May house prices rose by 2.6% year-on-year to reach £166,898 on average, according to the latest Halifax house price index. The monthly increment was small only 0.4%, this was indeed smaller than the previous month, but it was still an increase and this has now occurred in four consecutive months. Analysts believe that this is a further sign that the market is gathering momentum. The Halifax report
shows that house prices cost just over four-anda-half times the typical full-time male wage higher than the longerterm average, which is closer to four times the average income. However, lenders, estate agents, surveyors and property websites have been reporting signs of confidence returning to the market in recent months, following the launch of several Government schemes to make it easier for people to get onto the property ladder. The Homebuilders Federation said that since the introduction of the Government’s Help to Buy Scheme two months ago, 4,000 new homes have been
sold. The scheme is specifically aimed at giving people with low deposits a helping hand, though concerns have been raised that it could lead to a “housing bubble” by artificially propping up prices. The scheme helps buyers of new-build homes to get a mortgage with a deposit as low as 5% by granting an equity loan of up to 20% of the property’s value, which can be repaid at any time, or when the home is sold on. This part of Help to Buy is expected to deliver 74,000 sales over its three-year life. Next year, from January 2014, the Government will start making guarantees to lenders which will be able to support £130bn
worth of low-deposit mortgages. This activity is expected to generate around 190,000 sales per year - the equivalent of one fifth of housing transactions made in the UK last year. The number of mortgages on the market has also sharply increased with banks and building societies taking part in the Government and Bank Of England’s flagship Funding For Lending Scheme, which offers lenders discounted loans in return for boosting the flow of credit to the economy. Lenders have also been offering some of their lowest ever mortgage rates. Halifax said that HM Revenue and Customs figures showed there had been a “modest” pick-up in home sales recently, although sales volumes still remained low by historical standards. Martin Ellis, housing economist at Halifax, said: “Despite these recent signs of improvement in the housing market, the subdued economic background and the accompanying weak income growth continue to be a significant constraint on housing demand and activity.”

Common container Gardening gardening problems jobs for By David Hudgell Just because your plants are in a plastic tub, or a wooden trough doesn’t mean to say that you’re not going to have a few problems; it’s not just those with massive lawns gardens and acres of allotments that encounter problems. Q. The leaves on the bottom of my plants are turning yellow, and they look life-less. A. This is a common problem and due to excessive watering, initially check that’s the plant’s drainage is ok, occaisonly the drainage
holes become blocked. Otherwise reduce the amount of water, and remember it’s always better to water from the bottom of the plant, so that the roots soak it up. Q. My plant is growing tall and spindly, and it’s not flowered. A. This problem occurs due to insufficient light reaching the plants. They need light to grow, they’re growing taller
to try and find it. As they’ve not got the right nutrition they’re not flowering. Increase the light they’re receiving and probably give them a feed. Q. The edges of my leaves are turning dry and breaking off. A. This problem is caused by the accumulation of salts in the container. The best way is to give the plant a good soaking, almost
rinsing them out. Q. Why is my plant is turning a blue colour and won’t grow. A. When the growth of the plants is stunted and they look sickly and have a purplish color you have another type of container gardening problem. This is due to low temperatures in the area where the plants are located. This problem is easily solved by relocating the containers to a warmer area. Q. After buying a new plant now I have bugs on all my plants A. Holes in the leaves or leaves having distorted shapes indicate attack by insects. When you obtain new plants wash them thoroughly to get rid of any unwanted visitiors. Plant these new plants in clean containers. Monitor for insects and pests regularly.

FRINGE BENEFIT
By Carl from Robot
IF there’s one thing which can make or break your image, it’s adding a fringe to your hair.
If it’s a change you’re after and don’t want to go crazy, then think about having a fringe. A side-sweeping one will give softness around your face. Great if you have a longer face shape. It’s versatile, too, as it can still be clipped back when you don’t need it. Side fringes also look good on any length of hair, from shortercropped styles to midlength and long. They are so versatile and don’t take any growing
Page 40
out if you grow tired of them. Full fringes really bring out your eyes and can totally transform someone’s face. Skimming below your eyebrows is best as shorter can look like you’ve cut it yourself and it’s too short. Fuller fringes look great on bobs, and on longer-layered cuts, too. But try to avoid if your hair’s longer and one length because this can look a little schoolgirly. Having this sort of fringe needs a regular tidy-up once every three weeks to keep it looking perfect, but your salon should do this free of charge, or at little cost. Do try not to go for this type of fringe, however, if your forehead is too short as it can drown your face. Having a one-length fringe can seem as
though you don’t have one at all, but just having that hair falling around your face for some is enough to take away the “bare” look off a one-length cut. This can be clipped back to create a false fringe, or taken away all together by tucking to one side. The options for fringes are limitless, and they are a great way to change your look dramatically without totally changing your style. Getting the right one should be left to your stylists. Take their advice on how they will or won’t suit you. But do NOT try to create your own at home with the nail scissors. It could take months to put right!
Go easy on the pain-killers to avoid any risks TWO common painkillers can slightly increase the risk of heart problems if taken in high doses for a long time.
People with severe arthritis often take ibuprofen and diclofenac, which also calm inflammation, to enable themselves to go about their daily lives. Researchers said some patients would deem the risk acceptable, but they should be given the choice. A study, published in highly-respected Lancet, showed that the drugs posed even greater risks for smokers and the overweight. The risks have been reported before, but a team of Oxford University researchers analysed the issue in unprecedented detail in order to help patients make an informed
choice. The group investigated more than 353,000 patient records from 639 separate clinical trials to assess the impact of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. They looked at highdose prescriptions levels - rather than overthe-counter pain relief - of 150mg diclofenac or 2,400mg ibuprofen each day. They showed that annually, for every 1,000 people taking the drugs, there would be three additional heart attacks, four more cases of heart failure and one death, as well cases of stomach bleeding - as a result of taking the antiinflammatories. So the number of heart attacks would increase from eight per 1,000 people per year normally, to three more with the drugs. “Three per thousand per year sounds like it is quite a low risk, but the judgement has to be
made by patients,” said lead researcher Prof Colin Baigent. “So if you’re a patient and you discuss it with your doctor, you are the one who should make the judgement about whether three per 1,000 per year is worth it to allow you, potentially, to go about your daily life.” He said this should not concern people taking a short course of these drugs, for example for headaches. However, he warned that those already at risk of heart problems would be at even greater risk as a result of the high-dose drugs. High blood pressure, cholesterol and smoking all increase the risk of heart problems. Prof Baigent added: “The higher your risk of heart disease, the higher your risk of a complication. Roughly speaking, if you’ve got double the risk of heart disease, then the risk of having a heart attack is roughly doubled.”” He said patients should consider ways to reduce their risk, which could include statins for some patients. A similar drug called rofecoxib (known as Vioxx), was taken off the market voluntarily by its manufacturer in 2004 after similar concerns were raised. There are more than 17 million prescriptions of non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs issued in the UK each year - two-thirds are either ibuprofen or diclofenac.

The dangers of drying up over kidney stones intervention. “The only way to drive this down is to drive home the message that healthy lifestyle, diet and fluid intake is the best way to prevent the development and recurrence of stones,” he added. “We know that 50% of patients treated are likely to have a recurrence within a few years of having surgery, large-
THOUSANDS of new kidney-stone cases every year are caused by ignorance, or by sufferers refusing to believe they must drink three litres of water a day.
Leading doctor Bhaskar Somani, a consultant urological surgeon at Southampton General Hospital, is worried about this lack of awareness. “The danger of dehydration is responsible for an annual increase in renal stone admissions, especially among young people in their 20s,” he said. “The number of people admitted to hospital suffering severe pain and discomfort because of kidney stones is in-
creasing by between 5-10% every year. Over the past decade, the number of UK hospital admissions for this problem rose by 63% to more than 80,000, and there is no sign of these numbers letting up.” Kidney stones develop when crystals of salt gather into lumps and are not flushed out of the body because of a lack of adequate hydration, often lodging in the urinary system’s tubes.

They can cause severe abdominal and groin pain which, in many cases, can be corrected through surgery only. The condition affects about 10-20% of men and 3-5% of women between the ages of 30 and 60. At Southampton General Hospital, the number of patients admitted to hospital every month has almost doubled which, says Mr Somani, is a trend that will continue without
ly through complacency about hydration. “We also know we face an uphill battle to change the national mindset, But we must make a start.” The doctor said all adults should aim to drink between two to three litres of water a day, while former stone patients should maintain a daily intake of above three
litres to avoid recurrence. He has also called for the introduction of a screening programme for all high-risk patients: those with diabetes, gout or inflammatory bowel disease - and regular monitoring of people who suffered their first incidence of stones under the age of 25.
Give blood, slim down …and feel a lot better! IT is well known that giving blood provides an essential lifeline to those in need. But a growing body of researchers have found that it could have health benefits for the donor as well. Findings have shown that donating blood reduces the risk of heart attacks - and even cancer. And it burns 650 calories for every pint given. This news could come as welcome boost to British blood banks, which use an average of 7,000 units of blood every day. It is believed that the benefits arise from the lowering of high iron levels. Iron affects how thick and sticky the texture of the blood is. And high levels cause the blood to be thicker. They also accelerate the oxidisation process of cholesterol. This can affect blood consistency and create
increased friction as it travels through blood vessels. And, as this increases wear and tear to the lining of arteries, it could then contribute to cardiovascular disease. But because donating blood removes some of its iron content, it may actually have a protective benefit if done on a consistent basis by helping thin the blood. In a study from the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers found that those aged 43-61 had fewer heart attacks and strokes when they donated blood every six months. A study of 2,682 male donors from Finland found they had an 88% reduced risk of heart attacks than those who did not donate, reported Medical Daily. Likewise, a study published in the Journal
of the National Cancer Institute also links iron to an increased cancer risk as it is believed to increase free-radical damage in the body. In line with this theory, a 4½-year study involving 1,200 people found that those who made bi-annual blood donations had a lower incidence of cancer and mortality than those who didn’t. And that’s because blood donations lowered their iron levels. However, these benefits depend on making donations on a regular basis, rather than once in a while. Another side-effect of donating blood is that it has been proved it can burn a large number of calories, too. After donating, the body replaces all of the blood volume within 48 hours, and all the red blood cells within four to eight weeks. San Diego’s University of California researchers estimate that for every one pint of blood donated, 650 calories are burned as the body replenishes itself. Although this could be seen as an attractive, effortless way to lose weight, the NHS Blood and Transplant centre still encourages people to donate for altruistic purposes for the benefit others first, rather than for themselves. The NHS B&T service currently collects two million units of blood each year from 1.3 million British blood donors.

Are fish fingers made of chicken?
THE UK Press this week has been full of stories highlighting the fact that kids do not know the source of their food.
The research conducted by the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) surveyed over 27,500 children across the UK; it shows that nearly a third (29 per cent) of primary school children think that cheese comes from plants, one in ten secondary school children believe that tomatoes grow under the ground, and nearly one in five (18%) primary school children say that fish fingers come from chicken. The survey, the largest of its kind, was conducted as part of the BNF’s Healthy Eating Week. More than 3,000 schools took part with over 1.2 million children learning valuable lessons about healthy eating, cooking and where foods come from. Roy Ballam, Education Programme Manager at the British Nutrition Foundation, said: “Schools throughout the UK require a national framework and guidance for food and nutrition education to support the learning
Page 42
needs of children and young people, especially at a time when levels of childhood obesity are soaring. Through Healthy Eating Week, we hope to start the process of re-engaging children with the origins of food, nutrition and cooking, so that they grow up with a fuller understanding of how food reaches them and what a healthy diet and lifestyle consists of. The fact that so many schools in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have registered to participate in the Week demonstrates
their understanding of how important healthy eating is and their commitment to giving children a solid grounding from which to create healthy lives for themselves.” Over three quarters (77 per cent) of primary school children and nearly nine out of every ten (88 per cent) secondary school pupils know that people should consume five or more portions of fruit and vegetables each day. However, 67 per cent of primary school children and 81 per cent of secondary school pupils reported eating
four or less portions of fruit and vegetables daily, while two in every five children at secondary school don’t think that frozen fruit and vegetables count towards their five a day. The research also shows that an alarming number of children do not eat breakfast each morning, which increases with the age of the children. On the day of the survey, eight per cent of primary school children said they hadn’t eaten breakfast that morning; this increased to nearly a quarter (24 per cent) in 11-14 year olds, and then to over a third (32
per cent) of 14-16 year olds. When quizzed on the more general point as to whether they have breakfast each morning, six per cent of primary school children, 19 per cent of 11-14 year olds and a quarter of 14-16 year olds reported not eating breakfast every day. Scientific evidence confirms that consumption of fish, in particular oily fish, is beneficial to health. National recommendations are that children and adults should consume at least two portions of fish each week. However, in the BNF survey
16 per cent of children of primary school age and one in five children of secondary school age said they never eat fish. Averaged across all age groups, from five to 16 years old, only 17 per cent of children in the UK said they eat fish twice a week. The BNF research also looks at reported home cooking behaviour and shows that 17 per cent of primary school children and 19 per cent of secondary school children cook at home either every day or once a week. However, nine per cent of children at primary school and 11 per cent of children at secondary school never cook at home. Encouragingly, 84 per cent of primary school children and nearly three quarters (73 per cent) of secondary school children would like to cook more and an average of 85 per cent of children across all age groups say that they enjoy cooking. Ballam concluded: “Through this survey one in five (21 per cent) primary school children and 18 per cent of secondary school pupils told us that they have never visited a farm. This may go part way to explaining why over a third (34 per cent) of 5-8 year olds and 17 per cent of 8-11 year olds believe that pasta comes from animals.”

Daily bread Here in Tenerife, getting nice bread can be quite a task; Spanish varieties have a sweeter taste, which are not highly favoured by our British taste buds. So, why not try making your own? Many foodie programmes and recipe books are now dedicated to the sole topic of bread making. Milk bread is an easy recipe and popular, as it’s a way to use up old (even sour) milk. You will need:Strong white bread or plain flour 300g Instant yeast 1.5g dry active yeast 3g or fresh yeast 6g Milk 200g heated to boiling point then allowed to cool Salt 6g For the glaze honey 1 tbsp Milk 1 tbsp Depending on the type of yeast you’re using, for those with instant or fresh yeast, put all the ingredients in a bowl, mix and knead for ten minutes. If you’re using dry active yeast, put the flour in a bowl, make a well, add 100g milk, and sprinkle on yeast. Cover and allow to rest for 15 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients and knead well. Put the dough back into the bowl, cover and rest for 1-2 hours until it has doubled in size. Then put on an unfloured surface, split into 8 and form them into balls. Put on a floured tea towel and rest for a further 45 minutes. Heat the honey and milk together and allow to cool. Heat the oven to 220C/ Gas 7 Put on a lined making sheet, glaze with the honey and cook for 15-20 minutes until browned. Then allow to cool and eat! Simple white bread Recipe by Paul Hollywood Ingredients 500g/1lb 1oz strong white bread flour, plus a little extra flour for finishing 40g/1½oz soft butter 12g/2 sachets fast-action dried yeast 2 tsp salt about 300ml/10¾fl oz tepid water (warm not cold – about body temperature) a little olive or sunflower oil
Preparation method Put the flour into a large mixing bowl and add the butter. Add the yeast at one side of the bowl and add the salt at the other, otherwise the salt will kill the yeast. Stir all the ingredients with a spoon to combine. Add half of the water and turn the mixture round with your fingers. Continue to add water a little at a time, combining well, until you’ve picked up all of the flour from the sides of the bowl. You may not need to add all of the water, or you may need to add a little more – you want a dough that is well combined and soft, but not sticky or soggy. Mix with your fingers to make sure all of the ingredients are combined and use the mixture to clean the inside of the bowl. Keep going until the mixture forms a rough dough. Use about a teaspoon of oil to lightly grease a clean work surface (using oil instead of flour will keep the texture of the dough consistent). Turn out your dough onto the greased work surface (make sure you have plenty of space). Fold the far edge of the dough into the middle of the dough, then turn the dough by 45 degrees and repeat. Do this several times until the dough is very lightly coated all over in olive oil. Now use your hands to knead the dough: push the dough out in one direction with the heel of your hand, then fold it back on itself. Turn the dough by 90 degrees and repeat. Kneading in this way stretches the gluten and makes the dough elastic. Do this for about 4 or 5 minutes until the dough is smooth and stretchy. Work quickly so that the mixture doesn’t stick to your hands – if it does get too sticky you can add a little flour to your hands. Clean and lightly oil your mixing bowl and put the dough back into it. Cover with a damp tea towel or lightly oiled cling film and set it aside
7th June - 13th June 2013
to prove. This gives the yeast time to work: the dough should double in size. This should take around one hour, but will vary depending on the temperature of your room (don’t put the bowl in a hot place or the yeast will work too quickly). Line a baking tray with baking or silicone paper (not greaseproof). Once the dough has doubled in size scrape it out of the bowl to shape it. The texture should be bouncy and shiny. Turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knock it back by kneading it firmly to ‘knock’ out the air. Use your hand to roll the dough up, then turn by 45 degrees and roll it up again. Repeat several times. Gently turn and smooth the dough into a round loaf shape. Place the loaf onto the lined baking tray, cover with a tea towel or lightly oiled cling film and leave to prove until it’s doubled in size. This will take about an hour, but may be quicker or slower depending on how warm your kitchen is. Preheat the oven to 220C (200C fan assisted)/425F/Gas 7. Put an old, empty roasting tin into the bottom of the oven. After an hour the loaf should have proved (risen again). Sprinkle some flour on top and very gently rub it in. Use a large, sharp knife to make shallow cuts (about 1cm/½in deep) across the top of the loaf to create a diamond pattern. Put the loaf (on its baking tray) into the middle of the oven. Pour cold water into the empty roasting tray at the bottom of the oven just before you shut the door – this creates steam which helps the loaf develop a crisp and shiny crust. Bake the loaf for about 30 minutes. The loaf is cooked when it’s risen and golden. To check, take it out of the oven and tap it gently underneath – it should sound hollow. Turn onto a wire rack to cool. Source www.bbc.co.uk
Recipe of the week AT the ripe old age of 16, Mark Murray sat waiting to be interviewed for three hours before Paddy Brady, the head chef of a top Dublin establishment, appeared. There was hardly any work in Ireland at the time and Mark, now 44, was as nervous as a kitten because Brady was his dad’s pal. “I’d been rooted to the spot all that time through sheer fear.” But the job was his within 10 minutes and he was told to report for work as an apprentice chef two days later. “It was the quickest interview ever,” recalls Mark, who has been catering ever since. Now, as well as being chef at the Sound of Musicals, in Las Americas, Mark has just opened his second venture, The Willows, in the Apolo Centre, Los Cristianos. The official opening
takes place on Friday, 21st June, in the form of a charity evening for Tenerife’s Dogs Welfare Trust Tenerife. Tickets are eight euros and to reserve a table, call 922 792 619. Mark will be offering the recipe he has chosen here, along with other classics. “There will also be some tapas and some of my own creative dishes, depending on what I find in the market,” he said. “So please come along.” He added: “I’ve never forgotten Paddy and what he did for me and, in his honour, I’d like to share a favourite old recipe of his with Canarian Weekly readers. Pan fried salmon fillet (glazed in vermouth cream, crowned upon broccoli florets and sweet chilli) Ingredients 125g salmon Small broccoli 20g onion 40g butter
100ml double cream 1 measure dry vermouth tsp sweet chilli sauce salt & pepper Method Cook the broccoli until tender in plenty of boiling, salted water. Strain and chill in iced water, dry and set aside. Grill the seasoned salmon, flesh side first, in a hot pan with a little butter until golden. Turn in the pan and add diced onions. Cook until soft and add cream, reduce, season and remove from the heat. In a second pan, reheat the broccoli in some butter, season and splash with chilli sauce. Return the salmon to the heat and, when hot, add a dash of vermouth. Bring just to the boil and serve on top of the broccoli. The vermouth must go in late to avoid a bitter sauce.

By Jav Citroen's newlook Citroen C4 Picasso has more of a hatchback silhouette than that of an MPV.
It also offers the desirability always lacking from the old model and so much more! This is now the complete thing: a practical, fuel-efficient, compact people-carrier, giving you a much-refined time at the wheel. If the Nissan Juke and Range Rover Evoque are anything to go by, bold styling equals big sales, and that goes a long way to explaining why Citroen have given their all-new Picasso MPV an eye-catching

look. In addition, Citroen proudly announce that the machine’s allround abilities are so much more than skin deep. The e-HDi 115 version is predicted to be the range’s best seller and, style-wise, the Picasso sets a new standard in its class. Slim, daytime running lights sit at either end of Citroen’s extended double-chevron grille. And while the car is a bit more squat overall, at 40mm shorter and 40mm lower, it’s just as wide as ever, and Citroen maintain that the 57mm longer wheelbase provides the newcomer with even more space. As soon as you climb aboard, the clever pack-

aging is obvious, with the cabin feeling more open than the old model. Also, adding to the more practical feel is an increase in boot capacity, from 500 litres to a class-leading 537 litres. Slide the rear seats forward and this goes up to 630 litres. It has a useful bonus in that all three rear seats are the same size. So it is ideal for parents with three child seats, and also allows three tall adults to sit in the
back comfortably. Plus, each seat folds flat into the floor individually, expanding the total luggage area to 1,709 litres. And if that still isn’t enough space for you, Citroen will next year release a larger, sevenseat C4 Grand Picasso, with an equally striking design and horse-shoe tail-lights. The regular Picasso’s cabin is just as stylish as the exterior, with premium touches like the seven-inch touch-
screen and huge, panoramic windscreen. Top-spec models also get a large, 12-inch colour screen mounted on top of the dash, while basic versions have a simple digital read-out. Under the skin is PSA Peugeot Citroen’s new EMP2 platform, which helps the car tip the scales at 140kg less than its predecessor. The platform also promises better handling, refinement and ride comfort, and the
good news for MPV buyers is that it really does deliver on ride and refinement. The car smoothes out bumps and potholes subtly, without the body bouncing around too much, while wind, road and tyre noise are all kept at bay impressively. In addition, the handling is a big step forward over the previous model. It feels a lot lighter on its feet, and the steering is more reactive and communicative than before. Most noticeable is the way the C4 Picasso’s body no longer rolls through corners, staying much more upright. The diesel engine delivers 113bhp and is a reasonably-punchy performer, with 0-62mph taking 11.8 seconds, with an impressive70.6mpg, emitting just 105g/km of CO2. The new C4 Picasso goes on sale late this summer, with a £20,000 starting price for the range. The seven-seater Grand Picasso will arrive next year.

By Roscoe AS you’ve been reading on Page one, CD Tenerife will be playing second-tier football next season. So, to mark the occasion, here is the Canarian Weekly A-Z of the season!
Aragoneses. Captain fantastic led the team superbly and was far and away the best keeper in the league. He won the Zamora title for conceding the fewest goals, and he will be a big player again next season. Bruno. One of the finds of the season. The young centre-back has grown into the shirt, and with some solid displays. Was excellent in the play-offs. Cervera. Alvaro Cervera has always been a quality manager, and he didn’t put a foot wrong all season. Never afraid to make a bold change or slap a player on the bench. Has been brave in his rotation, and he has the knowhow to take the team higher. David Medina. Even Nostradamus couldn’t see Medina as the man whose goal would sent CDT back up! It was some strike, as well, against L’Hospitalet. Expectation. Every man and his dog thought we would go straight back into La Liga in 2011. And every man and his dog thought we would go straight back into Segunda division in 2012. So this year brought some reality. The team were expected to do well. But in a tough section, the expectation was lower. This was a real boost and gave the players the chance to play without fear. Fans. Again, they were top drawer. Over 16.500 came out for the play-off match and they were colourful, passionate and loud! A 12th man in every

The A-Z of promotion
sense. Goals. Or, more importantly, lack of them in the CDT net. In Santa Cruz, Tenerife’s defence were watertight. They shipped just four goals before Guijuelo pitched up in mid-March. It was the bedrock of the promotion push. Happiness. Never under-estimate the power of the feelgood factor. In recent seasons, the fans have fallen out of love with the club, the president, the players and themselves. However, there was no negativity this season and that lifted the players. Everyone was singing from the same song sheet. Inigo Ros. Player of the year. Took a few games to find his feet, but, once he did, he was the first name on the team-sheet. He had a fair few partners in midfield, but his
lateseason understanding with youngster Alberto got CDT over the line. Josmar. The criminally-under-used Venezuelan was the subject of Barcelona interest in 2011. In Jan 2013, he was released and spent the last few months at San Roque. Where? Exactly! Kit. There are certain colours a football team must never wear. Brown, Tesco Bag stripes and pink. Unless it’s the 20122013 CDT 3rd strip. It was gorgeous! Luismi Loro. Another fine season for the tricky attacker, who is enjoying his football at 33. Has a couple more years in him, but former side Levante are fluttering their
eyelashes, and a move into La Liga is on the cards. He would be sorely missed. Momentum. Tenerife started the season brilliantly and kept their form going. They didn’t taste defeat until late November, and the pack were never given a chance to catch up. Blips were nothing more than that. It was a fine campaign. Numancia. God, I hate that club! But they did help us go up. They loaned us Baltasar Rigo in the transfer window. Now here was an injured player being sent 1,000 miles south in the hope of getting him fit. Oh, and off the wage bill. He didn’t play for 10 weeks but, when he finally did pull on the shirt, he was magnificent. From the stiffs to first choice and promotion in a matter of weeks. And all thanks to Numancia. Oviedo. It was the win
at Real Oviedo that really proved to the fans, and probably the team, that they could go up. There had been a few wobbles before the match and they were a goal down early on. However, Tenerife dug deep and won, thanks to THAT goal. Altogether now: “Alberto from the halfway line...” Promotion. It may seem obvious, but this was all that mattered after last season’s disappointment. The club could have gone to the wall had they failed. Make no mistake, the pressure was on all year, but the goal was achieved. Quique Medina. The director of football had a storming first season. His signings worked out - well, Jeremy aside and he encouraged the selection of the kids. The challenge will be for him to bring in better players inside the budget for next season. Respect. A lot of teams touched down in Santa Cruz already beaten. They stuck 10 men behind the ball and just lumped it to the lone striker in the hope of getting lucky. It happened twice, none more so than in the Alcala match. But on the whole, they afforded CDT too much respect. Sicilia. Captain Pablo Sicilia stunned the Island when he announced his retirement on the eve of the season to spend more time with his family in Gran Canaria. Las Palmas were among a host of teams to try to tempt him back, but even with some offers in England, he resisted. Strangely, he wasn’t missed. Tarantino. There is no doubt he revelled in the role of senior defender after Sicilia’s retirement. This was born out by the number of yellow cards he got. Much lower than last season and no reds! But a lateseason injury, plus the form of Rigo and Bruno, must make it odds-on
that he will not be back in Santa Cruz in September. Harsh, but the realities of the modern game. United. In previous seasons, the team were all over the place. The senior pros didn’t merge with the kids, who were plainly not good enough. The local lads didn’t bond with the “mainland mercenaries”. This squad was different. While Aragoneses was the leader, old heads helped the kids. The Tenerife boys helped the “mainlanders” settle. This was a United squad. Vision. Cervera and Medina had a game plan from day one. Hungry players, fighting for the shirt. Local kids and seasoned pros with a chance to play for a big fish. Controlled aggression, tricky wingers and a lump up front to take the kicks. And boy, did it work. Wingers. Three into two doesn’t go. So when faced with how to best use Chechu, Suso & Cristo Martin, Cervera did what all great coaches do. He dropped one! New change of formation, no pandering. It worked, because they knew that one bad game would see them back on the bench. X-Player. The wonderful, selfless gesture by back-up goalie Razak in August should not be under-stated. He agreed to have his contract terminated so CDT could bring in another senior player. Nice touch. Youth. The kids are all right! Four local lads and products of the B team featured in the play-off matches and, with Sandro ready to return next season, the future is very rosy. Zaragoza. With respect to Mallorca and Deportivo, it’s nice to think about a match with Real Zaragoza. They are so similar to CDT in respect of their recent history. Always a fiery contest and one to look forward to during the barren summer months.

Double win puts Ron in Dixeyland! IT was Double Bubble for Ron Dixey at Los Palos on Sunday as the Fun Golfers competed in the 3-Club Challenge and the Seve Ballesteros individual events.
Sinclair sponsoring the Seve Ballesteros event. Ron Dixey was followed home by Harry Fleming, with Darren Kemp third. Sean Bible took Nearest the Pin for the Gents, while the Ladies came unstuck again. The message for them for ‘sympathisers’ was: “Come on girls, you need to try harder next month!” The Fun Golfers’ next competition is 14th July, and anybody wishing to play should call Clive on 922 797 640. And remember, all money raised goes to charity, as usual.
Ron saw off all the competition - more than 20 players took part in perfect conditions to secure both titles. The 3 Club was sponsored by Clive and Wendy Rollinson, with Sean Bible and Charles
Titans mooned at Bar 180!
IF you didn’t know, Titan is a moon of the planet Saturn. And the Titans were well and truly sat on at Bar 180 A as they suffered an 8-0 whitewash. And on a night of Premier League maximums, Bar 180’s Richard, Mick and Andy all contributed to the total of 11. Four of them came during Phoenix Bar’s 6-2 win at The Pub London claiming two and one apiece from Bubbles and Tim. Tom checked out 104
and 101, and Daniel hit a max as the Palms swatted the Naturals, even though Nathan hit two 180s for the Silencio outfit. Dave H secured his first maximum for La Caña Pirates, but his team could not back him up and they slumped to a heavy defeat at Target Army. Gaffers A ended up with just a point after Graham took out a stunning 125 to win the trebles leg for Ourplace Playboys.

By all accounts, Scruffy Macs had a bit of an off-night at Vikings Ensecan - as the 8-0 scoreline does kind of indicate. Getting his name up in lights in Division 1 this week is Simon, of Naughty Nautas. His 131 finish is the highest so far, although it didn’t seem to help much as his team lost to league leaders Bar 180 B. Bryn checked out 110 on the bull for Chipeque during a 7-1 thumping of Marilyns, while Barracuda Bytes
recorded the same winning margin over Amistad 1. Newcomer Steve, of Gaffers B, proved his worth on his debut as he hit the winning dart to take the trebles and all three points at Emerald Lounge. And elsewhere, Rood were held to a draw against Trap Door. Tenerife Sun look to be the team to beat in Division 2, and they hit top spot with a comfortable 6-2 victory at The Rebels. Sundowners, who won by the same margin against Pas O Nadas. Young Johnny checked out 92 for the Los Abrigos side. Bar 180 D’s Gary also went out with a 92 during a tight 5-3 win over la Caña Lancers. Emerald Shamrocks have got off to a solid start in their first season and now lie fourth after beating Phoenix Flights 6-2. Another new side in this division, Picassos, are also going along nicely in fifth place.
They brushed aside the Playgirls 6-2. (see what I did there!). And finally, Barracuda Hunters leapfrogged Amistad 2 after they came through the trebles leg to beat them 5-3. *The highest checkout in each division is being sponsored by Direct Telecom, for one euro per point. *There is a captains’ meeting this Sunday (9th June) at Summerlands Pool Bar, Los Cristianos, at 1pm sharp.

Breathless! TAKE a deep breath, read on and see how long you can hold it for until you have to fill your lungs again!
Dave Thomson can already hold his breath for more than three minutes - and he needs to so that he can enjoy the astonishing sport of freediving, which he took up just a year or so ago. The 51-year-old, from Golf del Sur, descends as far as possible in the blue seas around Tenerife, armed with just fins, weights and a mask, with no back-up for air. He is so enamoured of his new-found depthcharging that he has made a 21-minute film of his experiences around the Island called, aptly, Take A Breath - and it’s “selling” like hotcakes on YouTube. “So far, I’ve managed to reach a depth of 22 metres,” said Dave, who can hold his breath on dry land for 3mins 40secs, and for around three minutes when diving. “But a guy contacted me this week who has hit the 44-metre mark, and he wants to freedive with me. That really should be interesting!”
Dave, who is keen to spread the word on Tenerife, would love to hear from anyone who has seen his film and fancies having a go at this breath-taking
sport. “Quite a few of my friends have shown an interest, but so far I’ve had no takers,” he said. The Yorkshireman, from Bridlington, has
dedicated the short film to Sue, his late wife. Tragically, she died of cancer in Candelaria Hospital on 4th April, just short of her 51st birthday.
The couple had moved to Tenerife exactly one year and a day earlier to wind down after decades of running pubs in England. And Dave, who classes himself as “semi-retired”, soon discovered the delights of freediving after watching a YouTube clip of world champion William Trubridge in action. “I was inspired immediately and started the next day,” he said. “I owe it all to him. The experience was fantastic, incredible. Before long, I realised it was therapeutic as well. “You get a real buzz out of it, and it gives you an amazing feeling every
time you complete a dive, and there’s always the challenge of going deeper next time. “Anyone can freedive, and there is no danger attached to the sport. I dive down on one breath of air. We go down as deep as we can and stay down as long as we can!” He added: “You don’t have to be young to do this. Dangerous? More chance of getting run over by a car!” For all his ups, however, Dave is obviously still mourning the loss of his wife, and he says he owes a great debt to San Miguel Lions Club. “They have been a great help, getting me back on my feet during my difficult time over the past few months,” he said. On a lighter note, he said: “This Island has some truly amazing dive sites. Blue skies, clear blue ocean, hot weather - what more could you ask for?” It is well worth taking a look at his YouTube film Take A Breath for a fascinating view of what life is like beneath the sea - for a precious few minutes, anyway! “It’s an amazing world down there,” he said. Hat’s off to Palm Bar’s triple-challenge winner PALM Bar Golf Society’s Annual Competition was played over three courses this year: Golf del Sur, Adeje and Las Americas.
Twenty players, many having travelled from the UK, participated, and various prizes were awarded for each day’s play. Stephen Hughes emerged as overall winner in the Palm Mar-based Society’s event, which took place at the end of May. Following the Adeje match, food

was provided by Nigel and Polly Pinfield, who also laid on the entertainment at the Colonial in Fanabe. And each day, the Palm Bar’s Tracey Stewart catered for breakfast, and also food on the last night, when the
Presentation ceremony took place, again with entertainment. Thanks to the excellent organisation and help from everyone, the week was a huge success, and names are already down for next year.
