Captured

CONVICTED drug-baron Mark Lilley, on the run since 2000, was nabbed in a dramatic arrest at dawn on Saturday in Spain.

The 41-year-old from Warrington, who skipped bail during his trial, was naked inside a “panic room”, hidden behind a bedroom wardrobe in his luxury villa in Malaga. Lilley, who had been watching the police smash their way in on CCTV inside the room, had been alerted to the incident by his dogs. He surrendered after 13 years on the run when he realised he had run out of options. The joint operation between Spain and the UK involved over 40 armed officers from both the Spanish Special Forces and Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA), who swooped on the villa in the Alhurin de la Torre area of Malaga at dawn on Saturday morning. Lilley, a heavy-set, tattooed man, had altered

his looks drastically since escaping, including using a false name, and he’d become an expert in vale tudo, a Brazilian martial art. In 2000, he was sentenced to 24 years for drug-trafficking, in his absence at Bolton Crown Court after he

12th July - 18th July 2013

skipped bail. The sentence was for masterminding a £1m drug operation, together with firearm offences. Three fellow gang members, including the mother of his son, were jailed for a combined total of 28 years. Two of them are believed to have been re-

leased. The drug-dealer was featured in the nowrenowned Crimestoppers’ Operation Captura campaign, and his arrest means that 51 fugitives have now been caught since it was launched in October 2006. Dave Allen, Head of the Fugitives Unit at SOCA, said: “Lilley was a dangerous man with access to firearms. He had evaded capture for a long time by moving around Spain - spending some time in Tenerife - and using false identities. The Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) confirmed to Canar-

ian Weekly that Tenerife had been a line of enquiry in the Lilley case. He was alleged to have been spotted in Playa de las Americas in October 2003, by a Merseyside Policeman who had gone to school with Lilley and was holidaying in Tenerife. “Now, he’s behind bars where he belongs and extradition proceedings are underway. “My message for other fugitives on the run is simple: we will hunt you down - and you will face justice for your crimes.” Roger Critchell, Crimestoppers’ Director of Operations, said:

“We are extremely relieved that this dangerous drug-dealer has been arrested and will be made to face justice. “This latest capture brings the total number of suspects located as part of Operation Captura to 51 out of 65. We would like to thank the public for all their support and information so far. “But we also remind them that there are still 14 dangerous individuals we still need to locate, and Crimestoppers will not rest until we find them. Please tell us what you know - not who you are.”

The first phase of the improvement and upgrading of Calle Londres which was awarded a total of 1,317,009.17 euros is complete. José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, Mayor of Adeje, expressed satisfaction with the improvement of tourist areas of the municipality, “which also is being done in a quality manner, it has not prevented us achieving significant savings allows us to progress in this particular project.” The mayor said that “he wanted to give priority to pedestrians over vehicular traffic, but not hinder the actions involving the movement of vehicles on this important area Costa Adeje “. Fraga noted, finally, that actions of this type, are a collaboration and it should encourage the private sector to improve its infrastructure enabling Costa Adeje to remain a prime tourist destination.

Ricardo Fernandez de la Puente Armas stressed the importance of this work “with which we can improve our image as a competitive tourist destination because the Canary Islands Government know that the rehabilitation of our tourist areas is key if we

want to remain a world leading tourist destination “. Also, Miguel Cabrera, said that “one of the most important objectives of the Canary Islands is rehabilitation and improvement of public space to remain competitive tourist destination. In addition,

we must highlight the important collaboration of public-private sector; essential in the completion of this project “. For his part, Carlos Alonso stressed that tourism activities in public space are a “vital tool” to attract visitors and improve the perceived image of the destination, “especially in busy tourist areas, as in this case.” The work has included expanding the sidewalks adjacent to the hotels and created parking and loading and unloading areas on the other side of the road. Primarily, the project involved implementing 3.75 m. wide sidewalks to both sides. The paving was run with precast concrete floors and black basalt stone curbs.

Planning that ‘danger’ holiday? Make sure you’re fully covered IF you are coming to Tenerife for your summer holiday, make sure your travel insurance covers you for every eventuality.

That’s the strong message from the British Embassy’s Spanish headquarters in Madrid, which urges holiday-makers to check the small print on their policy to ensure it covers adventure activities such as quad biking or water sports. A new survey, conducted online by Censuswide and covering 1,690 UK young adults, reveals that fewer than half of young Brits check that their insurance covers risky pursuits. Yet four out of five youngsters admit that they are planning to indulge in “danger” activities, rather than just have no-risk fun on holiday. Consulates across Spain have firsthand experience of the distress caused to young people who suffer accidents, only to discover they can’t get home, or they face a hefty medical bill, because their insurance policy fails to cover

dangerous sports. Holidays in warm weather make Brits more confident more inclined to try new things - and less inhibited, the survey found. Dave Thomas, Consular Director for Spain, said: “Most Brits will think that hiring a quad bike for the afternoon, or going out on a jet ski for an hour, is not a risky pursuit - but their insurance company probably does. “That’s why it’s so important that holidaymakers check their insurance policy before they buy, and make sure they have full cover for everything they’re planning to do. He added: “We will do

12th July - 18th July 2013

what we can to support anyone who needs help, but we cannot pay medical bills or fly people home. “We deal with hundreds of cases every year, in which an already-distressing accident or injury is made much worse by having to worry about large, uninsured costs as well.” The average claim for a personal accident is £7,500, according to a Post Office survey, so it’s all the more important to get the right cover for a trip, including adventure activities. As well as travel insurance, the Foreign Office and The Travel Association ABTA also want holiday-makers to ensure they can get

basic medical care. A European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), available free from the NHS at www.ehic.org. uk, covers all medicallynecessary care in a state hospital during a temporary stay in Spain (including Tenerife). But it does not provide for private care or services such as medical repatriation by air ambulance, which can be very expensive. That’s why travel insurance is such an important factor when going on holiday. Details of how the Foreign Office can assist British nationals when things go wrong abroad are outlined in Support for British Nationals Abroad, which can be found at www.gov.uk/ fco/publications. The Know Before You Go joint campaign between the FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) and the travel industry encourages British nationals to prepare for their foreign travel so they can avoid preventable problems. The campaign targets a number of audiences, from gap-year students to package holidaymakers; sports fans to older travellers and people visiting friends and family abroad. COLGATE must be “squeeze” experts, having manufactured tubes of toothpaste for what seems like zillions of years. But this was definitely a squeeze to far, and I couldn’t help but chuckle after seeing on TV the chaos that transpired at London’s Waterloo Station. Some bright spark in the organisation came up with the idea of staging a promotion there to publicise their new, super-duper, electric toothbrush, the one and only ProClinical A1500 product, worth £170. Just bring along your old electric toothbrush - any old electric toothbrush - and we’ll swap it for our brand-new, stateof-the-ark model, they proclaimed. Unfortunately for Colgate, TV’s Martin Lewis, the world’s greatest expert on saving money with bargain deals, chose to include it in the regular newsletter he sends out weekly to his millions of acolytes. When I received this week’s www.moneysaving expert.com letter, I opened it eagerly to see what he had written about this magnificent offer. It was then that I discovered the following message: “Whoops, you’ve landed on a page that doesn’t exist.” Well, it certainly did earlier and I don’t suppose he was the most popular guy around on Tuesday because the promotion was supposed to last until today (Friday).

Instead, Network Rail chiefs were forced to order the closure of Colgate’s “brush swap” stand after thousands of people, arriving to claim their bargain, battled with regular commuters on the concourses in the busiest of rush-hours. In fact, some commuters arrived at the ridiculous hour of 5am and queued to claim their toothbrush. But by 7am, they were told there were no more available. All 150 samples had been snapped up. At 9.30am Colgate tweeted: “Due to crowd numbers, we have been asked to close down the #BrushSwap stand. Keep tuned for updates. Apologies for the inconvenience caused.” The company later said: “We’ve been taken aback by the overwhelming response #BrushSwap. Please bear with us while we are working on a fair & equitable solution.” Baffled bargain-hunters asked how Colgate could have possibly under-estimated how popular the promotion would be, especially after the Martin Lewis tweet and a newspaper feature. Morwenna Paz, who arrived at 9am to find the stand already shut down, said: “People were shouting, ‘Where are the toothbrushes?’ “So I now have an electric toothbrush in my handbag, waiting to know when/if I can take Colgate up on their upgrade offer.” Talk about getting the brush-off!

Mokka made in Spain The President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, is delighted that the multinational company General Motors has again trusted in Spain for the production of a new model.

He also said he will do everything he can to maintain the PIVE Plan [Efficient Vehicle Incentive]. While visiting the installations of the Opel factory in Figueruelas (Zaragoza), Mariano Rajoy said that the news of the production of the Opel Mokka has global repercussions of a highly significant nature for the automotive sector, and highlighted the skills and efforts demonstrated by the workers at this factory. In his opinion, the decision by General Motors to invest in the Spanish factory strongly reflects the reputation for excellence it has built up, as well as “major support for our future and further recognition of the competitiveness and leading position of our automotive sector”.

Mariano Rajoy said he is convinced that “Spain is the best country in which to invest in the automotive sector” and that the government will continue to focus on making Spain the best place in the world to make cars. “I believe we are moving forward in the right direction and doing so under a flexible labour relations framework”, he added. In this regard, he argued that the current labour relations framework is a highly important factor in the decision taken by many foreign investors to invest in Spain, the competitiveness of the Spanish economy and the generation of wellbeing and wealth.

Furthermore, he stressed that the Government of Spain will maintain its unyielding support for companies as the creators of jobs and wealth. “We will maintain our efforts to ensure Spanish workers are the most professional, the most highly-qualified and have the greatest know-how”. Mariano Rajoy went on to emphasis that he will do everything he can to maintain the PIVE Plan to incentivise the purchase of new cars. The President of the Government said that “we are coming to the end of the crisis and hopeful signs are starting to emerge”. However, he

believes that further reforms are needed to generate confidence because, when there is confidence, those on the inside invest and those on the outside commit to our country. “I am absolutely convinced that Spain is going to overcome this economic crisis”, he underlined. To finish he said that “there are companies with confidence in Spain - even in the most complicated of times - because there are many Spaniards who are rising to the occasion, who measure up, who are making great efforts, working hard, who understand the situation and are capable of reaching agreements”.

DOUBLE TROUBLE! A SCOTTISH twin fooled security at Glasgow Airport by using his brother’s passport to board a plane to Tenerife for a stag holiday.

But Ross White was actually wearing a T-shirt emblazoned “Ross the Boss”, and though he fooled passport control, an anonymous caller shopped him to police while he awaited his flight. Airport officials found him in the departure lounge with his 20 stagparty mates and, when asked who he was, he replied: “Myself”. The 27-year-old panicked when he couldn’t find his own passport shortly before the trip, and borrowed

the one relating to his identical twin, Christopher. “Basically, I just picked it up,” he told police. Campbell Porter, defending White at Paisley Sheriff Court, said his client had been desperate not to miss his holiday and had embarked on an entirely misconceived plan. White was not aware that he would have been able to get a replacement passport of his own for a fee within 24 hours. “Not thinking straight, he had this stupid idea,” added Mr Porter. The ticket and

boarding pass were also in Christopher’s name but Ross, a stonemason, breezed through check-in and passport control and into the international departure lounge. Mr Porter said: “He got past the first hurdle and would probably have succeeded to the next stage of getting on the aircraft. But someone decided he wasn’t going to, and made a phone call.” The Sheriff, Derek Livingston said of White: “It seems that someone was out to get him.” The Glaswegian

pleaded guilty to possession of a passport which did not belong to him at the airport on 8th March. Sheriff Livingston accepted that the offence amounted to little more than stupidity, and added: “That is exacerbated by the fact that you were wearing a T-shirt with your own name on it!” But the sheriff said the laws governing the use of passports were in place for good reasons, and the offence was serious. He sentenced White to a community pay-back order and told him to carry out 110 hours of unpaid work in a sixmonth period, stressing that the punishment was an alternative to prison. A sheepish White refused to comment as he left court.

tip-top Teresitas Santa Cruz City Council has introduced a comprehensive cleaning action of the Las Teresitas beach and surrounding environment.

This initiative, which began last Tuesday with the coordinated participation of various municipal services finishes today (Friday). The objective is to make this coastal area in tip top condition for the summer months. The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, was present in the area to monitor the work being done together with councilor, Damaso Arteaga, and Anaga District Councillor, Fernando Ballesteros. The mayor said that this performance reflects the intention of making “the beach in tune through intensive cleaning which also includes improvements in access, showers, ramps, walkways,

drainage, landscaping and parking area. With the budget that we have we can not perform great deeds, but we intend to make improvements essential for the maintenance of a beach that is one of the symbols of the city.” The gang responsible for the cleaning and maintenance work carried it out with hidrolimpiador - a flushing cistern, a loader, beach tractor, a beach cleaning machine, 4x4 multipurpose vehicle, a Manual beach cleaning vehicle and a band of street cleaning operatives. Meanwhile, the workers of the company Emmasa carried out vital sanitation work. The gardens and plant specimens are also undergoing maintenance and tidying. To do this, they have scheduled pruning and cleaning of palms, rosewood, shrubs and general cleaning of the flower beds in this area and parking.

Retirement age up again? THE Spanish Government has been told by the European Commission to increase the retirement age still further because the Social Security pot is not deep enough. Ollie Rehn, Vice-president of the EC’s De-

partment of Economics, believes the country needs to raise the minimum State pension age higher than the recently-approved 67 years. That, he says, will put it “in line with higher life expectancy and guarantee the Gov-

ernment will be able to pay State pensions”. Rehn is adamant that Spain’s Social Security fund is “in deficit” and that it paid out 10.1% of its GNP in pensions in 2010. He says it will rise to 13.7% in 2060, which will put it above the av-

erage for the rest of Europe as a whole. He has also called for index-linking of State pensions to be scrapped, but Willy Meyer, Euro MEP for United Left (Izquierda Unida), is firmly opposed to that idea.

Nelson and Tenerife

The exhibition “Nelson and Tenerife, a double look” has opened in San Andrés, and will tour all districts of the municipality.

The purpose of making it a touring exhibition is so that all districts of the municipality, will have the opportunity to enjoy this kind of cultural activity. “Nelson and Tenerife, a double look” recalls the exploits of July

25th, 1797, in which the inhabitants of the island gave an example of courage and respect the enemy in conditions far below those of its invaders. The way in which this exhibition is presented by means of 13 panels with text and images, provided an entertaining and understandable historical, architectural and artistic broad view of how events unfolded. For the first time the events are presented from two perspectives, the defense of the Spanish and British attack.

12th July - 18th July 2013

The exhibition will remain open until July 28th, and has been organized in collaboration with the cultural association “Your Santa Cruz”. Visiting hours will be from 12 to 20.30 hours, Monday to Friday. The travelling exhibition will tour the districts of the capital. From 2nd to August 18th it will be in Ifara Central District, from August 20th to September 9th, in the Southwest district and 12th to 29th September at the La Salle Health District.

Apple uncovers relic A new 6,000sqm flagship Apple store is currently being built in the centre of Madrid and builders have found a genuine treasure trove.

They’ve found the remains of a hospital that was built six centuries ago. The building located at number 1, Puerta del Sol, is formerly the Paris Hotel, here they’ve discovered the outer walls of the Buen Suceso hospital, next to the church of the same name. Both buildings were demolished in 1854 to make room for the square. The remains of the church were initially discovered during the construction of the new Sol Metro and Cercanías light rail station back in June 2009, halting the project for 10 months. The ruins were subsequently preserved in the mezzanine of the

Page 8

station, sheltered behind glass partitions. The flooring of the basement now has to be changed to accommodate the find, it will be covered up however, but they will “symbolically” trace the outline of these newly discovered walls. The walls themselves will then be covered up again so the floor of the new store can be placed on top. The actual original foundations of the hospital will not be visible. We’re not surprised to find these remains because we knew they could be there” Muñoz also recom-

mended that the company place an information panel in the store to explain exactly why this path has been drawn on the floor, so people who pass through (it’s still not clear whether the basement will be a commercial area open to the public or a storage area) will know that the church and hospital once stood on the site. The San Andrés Hospital was built in the early 15th century to treat plague victims. A church was constructed beside it and took the same name. Both changed their names to Buen Suceso (Good fortune) in 1612 and underwent several reconstructions until, in 1854, they were demolished to extend the Puerta del Sol. At that time, the hospital had 60 beds. No human remains were found during the excavation of the hospital. The Apple store in Sol does not yet have an opening date, although it could be ready in time for Christmas.

Banana brains

The Association of Banana Producers Islands (ASPROCAN) has launched a promotional campaign aimed at children and which seeks to highlight the smaller productions of the outermost regions, and more specifically the Canarian banana. The initiative tailors a message to youngsters, including the symbol of the production regions including the Canary Islands, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Madeira. The initiative will run until the middle of next month and will be channelled through an information campaign to be aired on two national children’s channels with wider audience, such as Disney Channel and Boing, being also present in their respective websites. The campaign focus-

es on the characteristics of the Banana Islands, which highlights its unique flavour due to the volcanic area in which the crop is grown and the climate of the Islands. It also emphasises its nutritional properties and its high-energy intake, which make it a healthy, natural, rich in vitamins and other essential elements for a balanced diet, especially within a group particularly important as the children.

The action is accompanied by a contest in which children can participate by answering a series of questions about banana production going into a draw for an adventurous journey to the Canary Islands for four people This campaign is part of the transnational advocacy Plan funded by the European Union, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, plus ASPROCAN. Its focus is on the specific influence of these regions, marked by growing conditions, within the framework of sustainable agriculture and quality, in line with the demands that these techniques pose and meeting the rigorous standards required production by the European Union.

19 drowning tragedies EIGHT of the 19 Spanish people who drowned in the first 10 days of July were children.

The tragedies occurred in swimming pools, rivers or the sea. Four youngsters lost their lives in one weekend, as well as two fishermen in their 30s plus an 80-year-old bather, all drowned in Galicia rivers in three separate incidents. A four-year-old boy died in a public outdoor swimming pool in Borja (Zaragoza) last Saturday, while a twoyear-old boy drowned in the pool at his Murcia home the following evening. Additionally, the body of a 12-year-old boy

was pulled out of the river Daró, in La Bisbal d’Empordà, Girona, over that weekend. A boy of eight drowned in the public pool in Ortuella in the Basque Country on the Friday. And during the same weekend, a 69-yearold woman drowned in the sea in the province of Tarragona and a 73-year-old man drowned off the beach in El Puerto de Santa María, in the Cádiz province. Emergency services say July has been the most tragic month of the year so far for deaths by drowning. Officials have urged bathers to take extra care, avoiding rivers or beaches with no lifeguards, and to keep a careful watch on children and the elderly.

ITV system to change?

Workers from the ITV Vehicle Inspection centres have been protesting this week outside the headquarters of the Government of the Canary Islands’ Ministry of Industry in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. They are protesting against the privatisation of ITV testing which will mean that

private garages will offer a cheaper service. The Ministry’s plan will free up the service to allow registered dealers and garages to carry out vehicle testing, as is the case in the UK at present. A spokesman for the workers said that they feel that road safety may be compromised by carrying out these actions.

Representatives from Thomas Cook, Spring Hotels and Cosmos were up and about early on Monday morning as part of an environmental initiative in conjunction with the Ayuntamiento of Arona. The morning beach clean up is the first of two events the other being on the 29th July at 9am to coincide with ‘Make holidays Greener month’. Make Holidays Greener month was launched by the Travel Foundation, it’s an opportunity for the travel industry across the world to show why

greener holidays are so important. This year’s theme is ‘link to what’s local’,

raising awareness about the things that make holidays really unique whether it’s culture,

local delicacies and souvenirs, local history, the environment and above all, local people.

President of Huawei Wireless Networks, David Wang, said: “Bringing 4G to Mount Everest marks an important milestone in global LTE TDD development. We are very excited to make this possible, and look forward to working with more operators worldwide to bring highspeed mobile broadband services any-

time and anywhere.” Originally, Huawei and China Mobile worked on a project to get mo-

bile coverage to Mount Everest in preparation for a leg of the 2008 Olympic Games

torch relay. Five years on it’s still going with the implementation of the new 4G tech-

nology. The mobile coverage will also improve mountain climber safety.

The beginning of a beautiful friendship TENERIFE will have a direct flight to the African continent from October.

The airline, Royal Air Maroc (RAM) will connect Tenerife to Casablanca with a direct flight that will operate every Monday, Wednesday and Sunday from the 27th October. This decision is the result of intensive meetings between the financial vice-president and Head of Tourism, Carlos Alonso and the Cabildo Minister for External Affairs, Delia Herrera, with the Minister of Transport of Morocco, Abdelaziz Rabbah and the president of the Driss Benhima company. Carlos Alonso said in the press conference,

“this connection is a gateway to 23 other African destinations without the need to pass through Madrid or London.” Delia Herrera emphasised the fact that “there it is a seasonal flight, but a commitment to the future “. The company,

12th July - 18th July 2013

which put the tickets on sale this week, will operate with ATR, with a capacity for 70 passengers and business class. After monitoring the return flight for a period of 30 months, the RAM will consider increasing the frequency up to five days a week.

This new route is vital both for tourism and for the business, s t r e n g t h e n i n g trade relations with the neighbouring continent. From the point of view of tourism, the Cabildo are already working on specific promotional campaigns aimed at

attracting Moroccan tourism. While the Chamber of Commerce of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is promoting another package of actions to promote to Island employers about business opportunities that will arise with this new flight. In the coming months of October and November there are scheduled several trade missions to Spanish entrepreneurs. Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca, Royal Air Moroc hub, is a true gateway to the African continent since passengers can connect in the same day and from that point with 23 African capitals and more than 55 international destinations with the aforementioned

operating airline. Royal Air Maroc has been driving for 50 years of economic, social, cultural and tourism in Morocco. It plans to achieve half a million passengers from Spain. At present, the airline operates direct flights to Casablanca from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Malaga. Morocco is at the moment an emerging market and Casablanca is the centre of trade and financial headquarters for major national and multinational companies. Moreover, the region of Souss Massa Draa is the one that maintains a closer relationship with Tenerife and presents great business opportunities for companies in the Island of Tenerife.

Royal Mail’s free package THE British Government plans to give free shares to Royal Mail staff under its plans to privatise of the service.

The idea comes in the wake of strong opposition to the sell-off among the workforce. In a statement to MPs, Business Secretary Vince Cable confirmed the intention to float a majority stake in the Royal Mail initially, with the rest to follow, depending on market conditions. Mr Cable told the Commons: “These shares will be free to eligible employees, recognising that many of them would otherwise, find them unaffordable.” But even as he announced that staff would hold 10% of the business under proposals first revealed by Sky News, members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) took to an open-top bus

in the City to denounce the sell-off. Some protesters, mostly postal service employees, held placards reading: “Save our Royal Mail” or “You own it, don’t buy”.

They argued that they cared more about the future of the service, their pensions, jobs and working conditions, than the prospect of a windfall worth more than £2,000 each for

the 150,000-strong workforce. Dave Ward, the union’s Deputy General Secretary, dismissed reassurances about future employment rules. He warned instead of the prospect of strikes unless legally-binding agreements were put in place to guarantee his members’ conditions. But Moya Greene, the Royal Mail’s Chief Executive, assured staff their pay and conditions would not be changed without their agreement. “As we move into the private sector, the cur-

rent legal position is that all terms and conditions that apply to Royal Mail employees would remain in place, on the same basis,” she said. “To provide further reassurance, we will create a legally-binding and enforceable contract with the CWU. Pay and protections could not be changed for the period of the contract without CWU agreement.” Mr Cable said the flotation, expected to value the business at £3bn, would begin over the next year. And the

shares, to be listed on the London Stock Exchange, would be available to the general public, as well as institutional investors. “This is logical,” he said. “It is a commercial decision designed to put Royal Mail’s future on to a long-term sustainable basis.” “It is consistent with developments elsewhere in Europe where privatised operators in Austria, Germany and Belgium produce profit margins far higher than the Royal Mail, but have continued to provide high-quality and expanding services.” He added: “Now the time has come for Government to step back from Royal Mail, allow its management to focus wholeheartedly on growing the business and planning for the future.”” Labour intend to oppose the flotation and Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna said: “Having nationalised the organisation’s debts by taking on its pension liabilities, they now want to privatise the profit at the very time it is making money. “There is every sign that this treasured, national institution is being sold off on the cheap to get income quickly to a Treasury whose economic strategy has failed.”

Man dies after being Tasered JORDAN BEGLEY, a 23-year-old Manchester man who died after police shot him with a Taser gun, was said to have suffered a “medical episode”.

Police had been responding to an evening disturbance in Gorton, where a man was believed to be armed with a knife. Assistant Chief Constable Garry She-

Page 14

wan said: ”Officers were dispatched immediately and arrived in eight minutes. On arrival, a Taser was discharged to detain a 23-year-old man. “It is unclear what happened, but at some point afterwards the man suffered a medical episode. Paramedics performed first-aid on the man at the scene, before he was taken to hospital where, sadly, he died.” A friend of Mr Bagley’s said: “I think he has

some problem with his heart.” A police cordon surrounded 10 terraced houses at the end of Beard Road, where the incident took place. A forensic tent, erected in the road within the cordon, was guarded by uniformed officers, a police van and two patrol cars. Mr Begley’s death has been reported to the coroner and to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

Crash pilot dazzled by a bright light

AN inexperienced Boeing 777 pilot, whose passenger plane crashed at San Francisco airport, killing two people, may have been blinded by a light.

Lee Kang Kuk, on his first landing at the airport and with just 43 hours’ experience at the controls of the plane, said he saw a bright flash as he approached the runway. It happened some 35 seconds before impact when Asiana Airlines flight 214 was around 500ft off the ground the point at which the aircraft began to slow down and drop steeply. Deborah Hersman, who chairs the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), said the use of lasers had not been ruled out. The pilot’s claim came as phone calls to the emergency services made by passengers on board the plane were released, demonstrating the confusion caused when it hit the runway. The two who died were

Chinese students, and there were 180 people injured, including three crew members, who were flung from the aircraft. Also, two flight attendants were pinned down when one of the emergency escape slides opened inside the aircraft. One female passenger, who begged for ambulances to be sent, can be heard saying: “There are a lot of people that need help … we have people over here who weren’t found, and they’re burned really badly.” The plane hit a sea wall as it came into land, causing its tailfin to break off, and the rest of the fuselage to spin across the runway. But it seems that passengers were initially told not to evacuate the aircraft, and the Safety Board discovered that they remained on board until a fire erupted, 90 seconds after impact. Ms Hersman said: “We don’t know what the pilots were thinking, though I can tell you that in previous accidents, there have been crews who don’t

12th July - 18th July 2013

evacuate. They wait for other vehicles to come to be able to get the passengers out safely.” She suggested that the pilots may not have been in a position to spot the fire outside the plane. The NTSB is using pilot interviews, cockpit recordings and control tower communications to piece together the moments leading up to the crash. They found that Mr Lee and his co-pilot, Lee Jung Min, who was on his first flight as an instructor, both thought the aircraft’s speed was being controlled by an -, which was set to 157mph. When they realised the plane was approaching the waterfront runway too low and too slow, they both reached for the throttle. Passengers heard a loud roar as the pilots made a desperate attempt to abort the landing. The dead students, who began their journey to the US in Shanghai, were on their way to a 15-day camp to study English.

‘Don’t jail wife’

THE husband of a woman who wanted to have him killed has pleaded with the authorities not to jail her.

Julia Charlene Merfeld, from Michigan, was captured on video telling a detective posing as a hitman that having him murdered would be “easier than divorcing him”. The 20-year-old, mother of two said that if her 27-year-old husband were no longer alive, she would not have to worry about “breaking his heart” or her family’s judgement following a messy separation. Merfeld discusses possible dates for the hit calmly, checking her calendar and stressing that it had to be carried out on a Thursday. She is also seen requesting that her husband is not killed in

their home because it would be “messy”. She evens manages to laugh as she chats with the undercover detective and tells him: “When I first decided to do this … it’s not that we weren’t getting along. But terrible as it sounds, it was easier than divorcing him.” The wife continues: “You know, I didn’t have to worry about the judgement of my family, I didn’t have to worry about breaking his heart - all that stuff like this. It’s, like, how I got a clean getaway.” Authorities said Merfeld wanted her husband’s $400,000 (£269,000) life insurance policy, and promised to pay $50,000 (£33,500) for the killing. She pleaded guilty last month to soliciting the murder and will be sentenced on 30th July. Merfeld is expected to be jailed, despite her husband’s plea for mercy.

The Pain of marriage M ARR I A G E really isn’t what it is cut out to be, according to many couples who feel trapped in their relationships.

They stick together for a variety of reasons, including money and sex - or rather, the lack of either or both! A survey covering more than 2,000 people revealed that 25% of

Page 16

husbands and wives admitted they were not “in love” with their partner. The same number said they stayed together for the sake of the children only, and would consider separating once the kids had left home. Around 33 % wished it had worked out with someone else instead, while 20% admitted to being unfaithful. The research, carried out by lawyers Slater

and Gordon, also revealed that 16% regretted getting spliced at all. But almost 50% still said that getting married was the best thing they ever did, and 75% said they would, wholeheartedly, advise young people to get married. For those unhappy couples, arguments over money, sex and spousal control were given as the main reasons for

relationships breaking down. But the overwhelming reason for women wanting away but not being able to was down to finance, with 20% saying they would end their marriage if they had a guarantee of financial comfort. However, husbands said they put up with a loveless marriage because of the negative impact a divorce would have on the family.

Nightmare train decimates town A HUGE fireball, caused by a runaway train, engulfed the centre of small Canadian town and is thought to have cost the lives of at least 50 late-night drinkers.

The Musi-Cafe, a popular place for live music in the town of Lac-Megantic, had a 40th birthday party celebration taking place at the time. It was hit by blasts “like an atom bomb” after the oil-tanker train derailed on a bend at about 1am on Saturday. It was Canada’s worst railway disaster in 150 years as the train, which had been parked overnight at the top of a hill, came roaring into the town after its brakes apparently failed. It sparked at least halfa-dozen explosions as it derailed and forced onethird of Lac-Megantic’s 6,000 residents to evacuate their homes. It was said to have travelled for nearly seven miles before coming off at a curve in the tracks at 63mph, and several wagons exploded. Witnesses said the town centre resembled a warzone, with at least 30 buildings destroyed, and some spoke of

fleeing floods of burning crude oil which spilled through the streets. So fierce were the flames that rescue workers were unable to go near for much of the day. But as we went to press last night, the identities of many of the missing were emerging. Town officials said that up to 80 people had still not been recovered in the crash zone. One firefighter said that at least 50 of them were thought to have been in the Musi-Cafe, which was just 10 yards from the crash scene and had been consumed by the flames. Bernard Théberge, who was smoking

12th July - 18th July 2013

a cigarette outside the cafe, told how he fled just in time after hearing the sound of the approaching train and realising that it was about to crash. “It was going way too fast,” said 44-year-old Bernard. “I saw a wall of fire go up, and people got up to go from the outside patio. “I grabbed my bike, which was just on the railing of the terrace and I started Then I stopped, turned around and saw that there were all those people inside. I knew right away that it would be impossible for them to get out.” Mr Théberge, who said he owed his own survival to being outside at the

time, added: “There were maybe 60 people inside.” The cause of the crash is still unknown, but Christophe Journet, a spokesman for the Montreal Maine & Atlantic company, said the train had been stopped in the neighbouring town of Nantes, around seven miles west of LacMegantic, for a crew change-over. For an unknown reason, said Mr Journet, the train “started to advance, to move down the slope leading to Lac-Megantic”, even though the brakes were engaged. “As a result,” he added, “there was no conductor on board when the train crashed.” One witness, Nancy Cameron, posted a photo on social media websites showing one of the train’s locomotives spouting flames near Nantes. A team of investigators from Canada’s transportation safety agency is now investigating. The train consisted of five locomotives and 77 rail cars and was carrying oil from the US state of North Dakota. Lac-Megantic lies in the French-speaking province of Quebec, and is close to the US

border. Fires were still burning more than 24 hours after the crash, creating a red glow that illuminated the night sky. Lines of tall trees in the area looked like giant, upright matchsticks, blackened from bottom to tip. Bernard Demers, who owns a restaurant near the blast site, said: “The explosion was like an atomic bomb. It was very hot, and everybody was afraid.” Canada’s Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, offered his “thoughts and prayers” to the town and said the federal government was ready to provide assistance. The local mayor, Colette Roy-Laroche, told a televised news briefing: “When you see the cenrte of your town almost destroyed, you’ll understand that we’re asking ourselves how we are going to get through this event.” At one emergency tent, paramedics sat idly in the torrid heat with no one to help, while residents gathered to await news of survivors, which never came. The café’s Facebook page carries messages of condolence, together with desperate appeals from friends and relatives looking

for loved ones on the missing list. “Everybody who didn’t make it back is dead,” said Frédérique Mailloux, 38, who said six of her friends were missing. “I have cried every tear in my body.” Jacques Bolduc and Solange Gaudreault emerged from a community centre after providing a DNA sample, potentially to identify their son, Guy Bolduc, a 23-yearold singer who was performing at the MusiCafe. “Our boy wanted so much to live, but the police told us there was no hope,” said Mr Bolduc. Nearly two square kilometres of the downtown were razed, said local fire chief Denis Lauzon. “The scene is like one you see after a big forest fire. There are only parts of the buildings left, trees have been completely burnt, there is no grass left and the cars are charred. This is total destruction.” Meanwhile, a railway boss has blamed an employee for failing to set the brakes properly. Edward Burkhardt, chief executive of Rail World, made his comments during his first visit to the town- of Lac-Megantic. Mr Burkhardt, who arrived with a police escort and was heckled by angry residents, said a train engineer had been suspended without pay. “We think he applied some hand brakes, but did he apply enough?” he added. Some parts of the devastated scene have been too hot and dangerous to enter and find bodies, even days after the disaster. But most of the evacuated residents started returning on Tuesday. Police said a range of possibilities remain under investigation, including criminal negligence.

The golf tournam Who will be drinking from the Cyder Cup?

AT LAST! The eagerly-anticipated Cyder Cup clash takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at Amarilla Golf.

Two teams, each with 50 players, will battle it out for a slice of glory, and they will also be raising valuable funds for top charity Helping Hands in Tenerife, which eases the plight of disadvantaged children on the Island. The match, between Blacktower Fm and Tenerife’s top British radio station, Oasis Fm, has a two-man Texas Scramble format with Ryder Cup scoring. It features equalhandicap players in each showdown, and no fewer than TEN sponsored holes, complete with prizes. Oasis Fm boss Chris Elkington captains his own team, jointly, with Biggest Breakfast DJ Roscoe, while Adi Benson and Ally Kerr

captain the Blacktower squad. Most of the contestants if not all, will have played the picturesque Amarilla Golf and Country Club course, which borders the Atlantic Ocean in places and sets searching questions regarding some holes. From the course, players can enjoy the incredible Mount Teide views, plus the sea and the wonderful

surroundings, of course. Donald Steel, who designed this wellsited Amarilla course, knows his golf inside out, having been a leading writer for the S u n d a y Te l e g r a p h and a good amateur player, whose career highlight was qualifying for the 1970 Open Championship at the Old Course at St Andrews. He positively revelled

in the challenge of creating a course over here, taking advantage of the Island’s beautiful contrasts to achieve a

varied course between barrancos (ravines) and the Atlantic coast. The course opened in 1989 and, from the first

tee, players discover spectacular views of the bright-blue sea. And the fifth tee is an absolute gem, a hole which visiting players talk about forever. That’s because the sea acts as the fairway and has to be crossed before your ball arrives on the green. It’s a wonderful challenge for even the best golfers, and it produces laughter, heartache and admiration in equal doses, depending on how it has been tackled. Tomorrow, all 100 competitors will face that challenge - and many others - before relaxing during the open-air awards ceremony and buffet at The Terrace Bar, on Amarilla Golf’s Pebble Beach.

Joe Crowley presents the series revealing thepotential that vacant properties can offer potential buyers. Joe meets playwright Andy Erlam, who dreams of turning a large, empty property into a unique home. To find out how big a build he is prepared to take on, Joe shows him around a disused glass factory in St Leonards on Sea, which could just be the unconventional living space he is looking for. To illustrate how commercial buildings can be successfully transformed into unique homes, Joe takes Andy to meet a couple who saw the potential in a disused pub and turned it into a stunning, modern home. Plus a look at how Dulwich Council won its battle to restore an iconic 100-year-old building, and one of the UK's empty property officers is on a crusade to bring some north London homes back to life.

Law & Order: UK ITV1, 21.00 Georgia Taylor and Paterson Joseph join the cast of ITV’s highly successful drama Law & Order: UK for series seven with dramatic storylines including a devastating train crash, kidnap and child grooming. Taylor (Casualty, Lewis, Coronation Street) is defence barrister turned Crown Prosecutor Kate Barker fresh from the more lucrative side of the courtroom. She may not look like the average prosecutor but Kate is straight-talking, charming and likeable and very used to getting her own way. She is headstrong, experienced and not a fan of hierarchies; the perfect combination to infuriate her new associate Chief Prosecutor Jacob Thorne (Dominic Rowan). Also joining the critically acclaimed cast is Paterson Joseph (The Hollow Crown, Hustle, Peep Show). DI Wes Leyton has been in the force since the age of 18. He’s been through it all and knows the only way to change things is from the inside. Newly appointed as DI, Wes is frustrated by the amount of time spent dealing with budget issues and filling in forms but he is determined to make a good job of it and get results. Wes and Ronnie (DS Ronnie Brooks played by Bradley Walsh) go way back and although they weren’t best mates they share a similar outlook on life. But his partner DS Sam Casey (Paul Nicholls) isn’t so sure of his new boss… Peter Davison returns as respected Director of the Crown Prosecution Service, Henry Sharpe for series seven which sees the law and order teams facing the darker side of humanity. The first two episodes will be a compelling two-part story written by Emilia di Girolamo (Law & Order: UK, The Poison Tree) with the second episode exploring ‘a day in the life’ of the characters. Matt Baker takes to the saddle to help round up sheep on the hills and meets the farmers trying to put Welsh mountain lamb on the foodie map. Raymond Blanc believes becoming a good cook is all about mastering the basic techniques. Raymond taught himself to be a Michelin star chef. But first, he had to understand what happens to food when you cook it different ways. Once you know what is happening when you roast, fry, poach etc then you can cook anything. After forty years of trial and error, Raymond wants to share what he has learnt. Each week he takes a different technique and shows five delicious dishes using that technique. The recipes range from simple to ambitious and Raymond delivers it all in his easy, warm, inimitable way. This first episode is all about slowcooking, a great technique that has meltingly delicious results. See what happens to a tough cut of meat with his Asian flavoured beef shin with papaya salad and the fabulous merging of flavours with a squid and chorizo stew. But simplest of all is an amazing compressed apple terrine.

In line with this discreet, sensitive objective, they have chosen some discreet, sensitive cars for the job with Clarkson in a McLaren 12C Spider, Hammond driving a Ferrari 458 Spider and May using an Audi R8 V10 Spyder. Over the course of their travels, the three presenters and their mid-range convertible supercars encounter mountain passes, ghost towns and an incredible abandoned airport before building their own street circuit in the deserted developments of Madrid. Also in this show, Sherlock and Star Trek actor Benedict Cumberbatch is the star in the Reasonably Priced Car.

The documentary series gives a bird's-eye view of South America, as condors soar along the Andes, scarlet macaws explore the heart of the Amazon and hummingbirds and vultures see the continent's greatest sights. It is a journey that includes Machu Picchu, the Nasca Lines and the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Santiago. In Patagonia, giant petrels shadow killer whales as they hunt seals by stranding their huge bodies on the beach. At Iguassu Falls, dusky swifts dive through the cascades to huddle in communal roosts while hummingbirds bathe below. In a secret Andean location, condors soar in flocks over 40-strong and scavenge on casualties from herds of fighting guanacos. Elsewhere, a mother condor gently pushes her youngster to the edge of a 200-metre cliff, as flight school begins. Deep in the Amazon, macaws seek medicinal clay. They are joined by a host of secretive jungle animals, including spider monkeys and tapirs, all after the same remedy.

With Britons spending £1.2 billion a week on food, Gregg Wallace and award-winning greengrocer Chris Bavin go head-tohead to uncover whether you can get great value for money without compromising on quality. They set out to create two very different versions of the classic British dish - fish and chips. Gregg seeks out high-end ingredients to prove you get what you pay for, while Chris looks for a low-cost alternative which he hopes will taste just as good. To test their theories, the boys brave stormy Norwegian seas to catch cod, take to the kitchen to create their own ketchup and even slip into lycra. But in the end it is the Great British public who decide in the final taste test. Whose version of fish and chips will win out Gregg's high-end, or Chris's great value? The boys also hit Britain's streets to test other family favourite foods on the general public, with some surprising results - can you really Eat Well for Less?

South Africa's Dirty Cops. With South Africa's future under the spotlight, Channel 4 Dispatches examines allegations that the country's police have become a brutal and corrupt force. R porter Inigo Gilmore investigates CCTV and mobile phone footage, which, critics say, show officers beating and torturing suspects. He also interviews a 14-yearold boy who alleges he was tortured at the hands of the police. With a wave of anti-government civil protests routinely and brutally suppressed by the police, Gilmore explores the problematic relationship between those employed to serve and protect and their political masters. He speaks to the wife of Andries Tatane, an activist whose killing by police was caught on camera, and reveals compelling new evidence of the police's role during and after the Marikana massacre when 34 miners were shot and killed by police in 2012.

Princess Diana’s Dresses Channel 4, 21.00 One-off documentary Princess Diana’s Dresses: The Auction explores the story behind some of the late princess’ most unforgettable looks through the couture dresses that went to auction in what was the biggest ever UK sale of her clothes. With exclusive access to Kerry Taylor Auctions, this 60 minute film examines how Diana’s style evolved, the statement that was made by each outfit choice and why these particular dresses were so key throughout her time in the spotlight. Unseen archive footage and interviews with the style insiders who knew her best bring to life what motivated Diana’s decisions towards fashion. From the 25ft train of her wedding gown that was longer than any other royal train, to the off-shoulder velvet gown worn when she famously danced with John Travolta and the striking halter neck black dress that was captured by Mario Testino – viewers will begin to understand how the princess used her clothes to express her individuality. The film shows Diana’s growth in confidence and how she came to understand that her clothes could speak volumes. She began to know exactly how to dress for the occasion and could always be relied upon to give public the picture they wanted - never failing to walk down the red carpet as anything less than the epitome of glamour.

Series following the work of probate researchers who search for the heirs of people who've died without leaving a will and have left thousands of pounds unclaimed. Today, their survival relies on a combination of ancient wisdom and cutting-edge science. Most Arctic people live in Siberia, either in cities like Norilsk - the coldest city on earth - or out on the tundra, where tribes like the Dogan survive by herding reindeer, using them to drag their homes behind them. In contrast, Antarctica is so remote and cold that it was only a century ago that the first people explored the continent.

The Route Masters: Running London's Roads Channel 4, 21:00

In the last decade, Victoria Coach Station has been transformed. London's only coach station has in effect become a new border, for thousands of migrants coming to Britain from Eastern Europe and elsewhere. Cheap coach fares have resulted in a 25 per cent increase in passengers in the last five years alone. So the Transport for London staff running the coach station must now work flat-out to cope with the demand. Customer service assistant Hayley, a former bodyguard and stuntwoman, has worked out her own special technique for charming the coach drivers. Jack speaks Polish, which helps when he has to deal with hundreds of Poles departing and arriving every day. And Sergeant Shaun Doyle is on patrol, coping with everything from a missing teenager who turns up at the coach station to illegal immigrants and stowaways. This is the story of how one of the oldest parts of London's transport infrastructure has become the busiest, thanks to the way London has changed.

Philippa Gregory reveals the true stories of three remarkable women who lived through the treason and bloodshed of the dynastic conflict we call the War of the Roses, known at the time as the 'War of the Cousins'. Gregory argues that it is impossible to understand this volatile and pivotal moment in English history without understanding the women at the heart of the family feuds that tore the nobility apart. She traces the stories of Elizabeth Woodville - the White Queen - and her rivals, Margaret Beaufort and Anne Neville, to demonstrate that they are as vital as any of the Kings and nobles that conventional history concentrates upon. This was a battle between kin not countries and the loyalties, rebellions, plots and betrayals of these women were decisive in shaping the history of England.

Heir Hunters Once again the Heir Hunters attempt to link people with money they stand to inherit from longforgotten relations. Elsie Pope died in a nursing home near Shrewsbury leaving an estate worth 50,000 pounds. The search for her heirs is complex, not least because Elsie's father managed to register her birth twice in two different districts. Rose Edwards was a working class girl from the East End of London and went on to become one of Lyons' famous Nippy waitresses working in their prestigious teahouse in Marble Arch. Faced with a large London family, the heir hunters uncover a surprising secret. Plus, how you could be entitled to a share of unclaimed estates worth thousands or even millions of pounds.

The Briefs ITV1, 21.00 The second series of The Briefs offers viewers an insight into British justice from the perspective of the defence. This new two-part series again follows lawyers from a Manchester firm as they represent clients accused of crimes ranging from brandishing an axe at police officers to blackmailing and defrauding a pensioner out of their life savings. With close-quarters access to Britain’s busiest legal aid-funded law practice, Tuckers Solicitors, this returning series shows privileged conversations between lawyer and client, and follows the cases from police station to court - and even to prison. The cameras join them at a challenging time with business dipping and with legal aid cuts looming, our lawyers take to the streets in protest. In the first programme, the lawyers represent a man accused of violent disorder and of brandishing a knife at police in a burglary, another accused of an armed robbery with an axe at a hairdressing salon, a serial burglar accused of changing his line in crimes by causing criminal damage, and a man accused of attacking with a claw hammer another man he suspected of being a paedophile. The cameras also follow the Tuckers team away from the office, with the wedding of legal adviser Katy Calderbank in focus as she prepares for her big day - an opportunity for staff to celebrate together. In the second programme, they represent a man accused of stabbing another man who he says attacked him with a spade at a house party, a conman with an imaginative line in aliases who is accused of defrauding and blackmailing an elderly doctor out of his life savings, and Tuckers staff go on a march to protest against the Government’s legal aid reforms. Producers Chameleon Television spent two years filming with Tuckers Solicitors, who handle more than 10,000 clients a year. More than half their cases are legally aided - the lawyers paid by the taxpayer - but the Government has introduced plans to cut the legal aid budget. The company deals with more of these cases than any other law firm in the UK. Cameras have also been allowed into police stations, so viewers are able to see privileged conversations between lawyers and clients following their arrest, such as when Katy advises her client before his police interview: “We don’t say anything. See what they’ve got. I will look at you. Once the caution’s explained I’ll look at you and give you a wink and that’s your cue to start saying ‘no comment’. If you do speak I might give you a slight tap on the foot to shut up. Apart from that we’ll be fine I think.”

In war torn Mogadishu, capital of Somalia and source of the piracy epidemic in the Indian Ocean, Simon travels with the African peace keeping force AMISOM. On the frontline, with bullets flying around, Simon learns that these underfunded Ugandan soldiers are actually fighting a bloody war with al Shabaab, a violent Islamist militia linked to al Qaeda. In this edition, 42-year-old super snacker Julie Menzies and 24-year-old fussy eater Zoe HughesBlinston switch diets in an emotional swap. Award-winning baker Julie weighs in at 23 stone 11. At the other end of the scale, busy fashion manager Zoe is so slim she could be mistaken for a store mannequin. During the swap a tearful Julie is horrified by the terrible medical implications of her diet, while Zoe breaks down as she talks about being bullied at school because people thought she had an eating disorder. Plus, in America's fattest town, Dr Christian discovers how the funeral parlour copes with bigger and bigger bodies, from supersize coffins needing two burial plots, to having to cut off limbs to fit larger bodies in the cremation ovens. And journalist Emma Woolf investigates the little known world of eating disorders in men, meeting an anorexia sufferer whose use of laxatives caused a major health scare.

Entertainment

Go compere, go compere! IT surprises me to see so many venues struggling to find a compere, whether as cover for their regular compere’s night off, or as a resident.

In fact, there seems to be a compere drought on Tenerife. The Island’s karaoke and showbars have always had some of the best comperes around, but where are they now? The compere’s role has changed somewhat over the last few years. At one time, it was their job to book the acts for the week’s entertainment programme, sort out all the relevant advertising and, basically, deal with all aspects of entertainment, including sound and lighting, plus equipment maintenance. Nowadays, the role of compere doesn’t seem important any more and bar owners no longer want to place all that responsibility in their hands. They like to book the acts themselves and call in technicians to repair and maintain equipment. But is this to save money, or is it because there is a

lack of ability within the compere field? There’s certainly enthusiasm out there, but that doesn’t cut it. All the good comperes are already in the good venues, but when it comes to them finding somebody to cover for nights off and holidays, it’s proving hard to find the right person. There is a gap in the market for someone to be a “pro-cover compere”. Eddie’s really in the know EDDIE MARZELLA is resident at Springers Bar, in El Mirador, Los Cristianos, and he is one compere who has remained consistent in his work ethic for over a decade. He is also struggling to find a good compere to cover his night off and holidays. Eddie is from Scotland and has a very matter-offact” approach to his job. The main thing you will notice about this seasoned entertainer is that he has no ego polish. He is a genuine guy

and is very under-rated as a host. And size doesn’t matter to Eddie - Springers is a small bar, but it operates to full capacity every night. The host is really important in a place like Springers because it is one of a few bars of the same genre along El Mirador. All the bars along here are busy and have comperes with completely different styles. So what is it that stands out about Eddie and Springers? For starters, whenever I have dropped in, he always seems to know everybody’s name, even if they are on holiday for a short time. He believes it is important to make those guests who come back every night feel his sincerity and get that welcome feeling.. Just that simple thing can make someone’s holiday. Eddie told me this years ago, when he worked in the Bluebell Bar in central Los Cristianos, and that advice has stayed with me

ever since. It has also worked well for me, too. He has a strong voice and a wide repertoire of songs to call on when needed. However, he doesn’t feel the need to sing for the audience all the time and his best nights down there are when he begins the evening with a song - and that is the only time he sings all night, making way for an endless list of karaoke singers. And, I might add, they don’t even need to fill in request slips because he knows their names and, in most cases, what songs they like to sing. He has this sixth sense, too, and can spot new faces in the crowd who want to sing on karaoke and immediately lets them know that he’ll be getting them up. This style doesn’t work in every karaoke bar, but it certainly does here. Eddie is a hardworking guy, and you’ll often see him jump to help the busy bar staff collect and wash glasses - and even serve behind the bar. Springers is a cracking little karaoke bar and I would urge anyone to pop in, if only for a drink and to see a top compere at work. Eddie will make you feel at ease instantly

and, should you wish to be involved in the entertainment, whether it be dancing along the bar or singing Sweet Caroline on the karaoke, he will be there to grant your wishes. WHAT’S NEW… IT’S nice to see Paul Hazell doing well on the circuit. After relocating his whole family here, he has really put everything into Tenerife. Paul is a stage hypnotist and is building up his reputation well. Every venue so far which has booked Paul has ended up giving him a permanent spot. He exceeds expectations, getting more people under his hypnotic influence than any of the previous hypno acts which have performed here before. His imagination becomes your fascination and, through his volunteers, he delivers a firstclass show. It won’t be long before Paul is fully booked. No bar is too big or

small for his show, so if you want something new and exciting which really does pull a crowd into your bar, then call him direct before it’s too late. You can book The Paul Hazell Comedy Hypnosis Show on 663 492 947. He is also a fully qualified hypnotherapist and it has been proven that his techniques can help with many things in your personal life, such as quitting smoking. The Canarian Weekly wishes Paul and his family all the best, and a warm welcome to Tenerife.

LEONARDO’S EYE-OPENER A FEW weeks ago, I started working as resident DJ in Leonardo’s, and I am enjoying it so much there. In the last sponsored issue of the Canarian Weekly, I wrote about organised bar crawls with the Island’s main tour operators, and said they could exceed 100 people. Well, I worked my first main event in the Leonardo’s summer calendar last week for the Vernon Kaye pre-party, in conjuction with Tramps. The manager actually told me that 100 was just a fraction of how many people would be there. Sure enough, from 8pm the terrace was full - and set to get even busier. On these evenings, which will continue every week through the summer, roughly 600-800 people will pass through Leonardo’s. It is already known as the No.1 meeting place, so it is little wonder that Tramps and Leo’s are working together on these events. DJ Scott Page comes down from Tramps for a one-hour set to get the party started. He really does get the place jumping, and he always has a handful of VIP tickets to give away. This is the best night I’ve been involved in for a long time and I am looking forward to the next preparty at Leonardo’s which, incidentally, is on Thursday (18th July) for the return of Vernon, who’s very popular with the ladies - and with certain cabaret artistes on the Island. Just look who was spotted cuddling up to Vernon last Thursday!

It’s business ...from home!

By Sue McDonald OUR lovely Summer is well and truly here at last – and with a vengeance!

While we enjoy good weather pretty much all year round, we can anticipate plenty of sunshine for the next couple of months. So give some thought to how you can prepare yourself to enjoy it without getting hot and bothered. Suncurtains are our first line of defence against heat and bright light and, as I mentioned in my last article, they now come in a variety of colours, rather than the plastic type which has been around for years. In fact, we have recently sold lots of this to people for their UK homes. That’s because

it does get light really early, although they don’t get much sun there. Suncurtains are also a godsend when it comes to getting kids to bed at a reasonable time on a light, summer evening. You might like our good-quality fly screens, which allow a current of air through your home without those pesky mosquitoes which usually come with it. Also, sun blinds can provide shade for your terrace area, and also maintain a lower temperature inside the house by reducing direct sunlight. Our terraces are used all year round, but now is the time to look at changing that white, resin furniture for some synthetic rattan, which looks more stylish and is more comfortable. Also, because they are resistant to sun and water, they can be left out in all weathers. So all in all, you can

easily get yourself all set to enjoy the summer! However, this time of year is traditionally very quiet in the furniture business, and everyone in Los Cristianos at the moment seems to want to sunbathe and have a cold drink, rather than talk about re-upholstering sofas or getting new curtains! And who can blame them? So Gilly and I have decided to work from home in July and August while the heat is at its worst! Thanks to the wonders of technology, we will have the shop number with us, as well as the usual mobiles. And if any new customers or regular clients need anything, we can arrange to come to the shop, or meet at their property. Fortunately, I have a small office at home, so we will be hard at work there (no daytime TV, Jeremy Kyle or coffee breaks going on, honestly!). We also have a clever device from Ahead Telecom that plugs into the router and allows us to make calls to the UK for one cent a minute, so we are well and truly set up to work from home! In any case, most of work relates to curtains and re-upholstery, which is better dealt with at the client’s property, so a quick phone call to make an appointment and business carries on as usual! And when we re-open the shop in September, we might both have quite good suntans as well…

Britain’s sunnier outlook THERE is a fresh, optimistic outlook about Britain’s recovery from recession following a series of upbeat surveys.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors’ (Rics) house-price balance leapt to plus-21 in June from plus-5 in May, which was the best reading since January 2010 and the biggest improvement in a single month since 2009. A Deloitte survey also revealed Britain’s top companies are keener to expand than at any period in the past two years. And thirdly, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) reported a healthy growth in June sales. This promising hattrick of forecasts for Britain’s economic recovery were also lifted following the International Monetary Fund (IMF) hiking its growth forecast for the year. Indications from the Bank of England last week were that it wanted monetary conditions

to remain stimulative, mindful that higher bond yields could still wipe out Britain’s burgeoning recovery. But new Bank governor Mark Carney, from Canada, appears to have taken just as the economy is picking up. “It is particularly encouraging to see the move towards growth among UK-facing companies,” said Deloitte chief economist Ian Stewart. “These companies have been consistently more defensive than their international-facing peers in the last two years.” The Deloitte survey showed that expectations for hiring and investment were at a two-year high, with 25% of the chief financial officers polled saying they had shifted their focus from cutting costs to expansion. The Rics survey revealed that some 45% of surveyors expect home sales to rise over the coming three months - up from 36% in May and the highest reading since the survey began more than a decade ago.

In another nod towards market confidence returning, newbuyer inquiries improved for a sixth consecutive month - and at a rate not seen since August 2009. The survey strikes a chord with data from mortgage lenders Halifax and Nationwide in suggesting the Government’s Funding for Lending and Help to Buy schemes are refuelling the market. Rics’ global residential director Peter Bolton King said: “After what has seemed like a very long wait, we are finally starting to see what looks like the beginning of a recovery in the housing market.” The BRC survey showed British retail sales grew in June, boosted by purchases of clothes and shoes as warmer weather tempted shoppers to the high street. Some two-thirds of house-dwellers own their homes in Britain, and rising house prices have, typically, gone hand-in-hand with rising consumer spending.

M&S figures fall High street stalwart Marks and Spencer has reported just a 0.3% rise in underlying UK sales for the latest quarter, as strong food sales offset a drop in clothing sales again. UK like-for-like sales rose 1.8% at its food business, but general merchandise - which

Page 38

includes clothing, footwear and homewares fell 1.6%. The fall is the eighth consecutive quarter drop in sales for general merchandise. CEO, Marc Bolland announced that general merchandise has shown “some improvement this quarter”.

Earlier in the year M&S had a retail shake up and back in May unveiled a new clothing collection and strategy. All eyes are now on this year’s autumn and winter collection, which goes on sale later this month and has received good reviews from the fashion press.

By David Hudgell If you think your outside balcony or terrace is lacking something, there are a great array of climbers, some fast-growing, than can make it look just that bit better.

Climbers not only provide colour, fragrance and beauty but also double in providing privacy and seclusion. They can also give welcome shade for your ‘al fresco’ dining area. Most plants need a simple structure to scramble over whether it is small trellis or a large pergola. You’re really spoilt for Transplant seedlings of winter/spring flowering plants into seed trays or small pots. Dead-head bedding plants and roses to encourage further flowering. It’s also advisable to use a spray on roses for the control of rust, black spot and mildew. Baskets and containers can dry out quickly in warm, sunny conditions and may need watering twice a day. Feed regularly to promote flowering. Remember that by regularly watering and feeding cascading varieties such as million bells and petunia surfinia will give spectacular displays lasting right through. Sowings can be made

choice – passion flowers possess an exotic feel and they have distinctive orange fruits. A grapevine with delicious black fruits gives any space that Mediterranean rustic feel.

Or, Glasnevin, which is a prolific flowering wall shrub, that’s easy to grow. And finally, Clematis has to be a common favourite too. AT the recent HTA National Plant Show, Clematis

'Beautiful Bride' was voted best new plant with its massive white flowers. Free flowering variety, Clematis 'Beautiful Bride' produces an amazing display of large pure white flowers and really gives

of alyssum saxatile, aquilegia, armeria, campanula, coreopsis, delphinium, lychnis, myosotis, penstemon, pansy, physalis, pyrethrum and helianthemum. Also at this time sowings of biennials such as foxglove, sweet william, canterbury bells and forget-me-nots can be made for planting out in autumn. Flowers that are coming to their end should be removed, as this may with some varieties encourage further flowering. Flower-spikes can be cut down to just above a new shoot or leaf, ap-

ply liquid feed to each plant to encourage fresh growth. Dahlias especially will be growing well, and for the plants to produce a greater number of flowers, the first bloom should be cut with a very short stem and avoid cutting into the flower buds below. If larger flowers are required - remove the flower bud shoots (this is disbudding) below the main leading flower bud, which will strengthen the stem, and make the flower size noticeably larger. By pinching out shoot tips on chrysanthe-

mums in early July this will encourage shoots to branch out and carry more blooms. If you are growing onions they should not be allowed to go short of water as this will affect the size of crop. Should conditions be dry it is advisable that the plants are watered; and do keep the weeds down. Remove side shoots on tomatoes and stop the plants when 4-5 trusses have been produced. Feed regularly with a high potash liquid fertiliser. Do not allow plants to dry out as this can lead to blossom end rot.

the wow factor. You can plant clematis seedlings - Clematis tangutica Pinwheel – now to enjoy masses of large, lemon-yellow, lantern-like blooms next year. Later in the sum-

mer the flowers are replaced by attractive silver tassle-like seed heads. Ideal for growing against a fence or wall. HP - Hardy perennial. Sow outside now for flowers June-August the following year.

It will soon be time for harvesting second early potatoes, therefore, to make sure the potatoes have developed into a good size just examine one of the plants and if they are still a bit on the small size leave them a little longer but remember to water regularly every week. Beetroot and other crops can be harvested while they are young and tender. Continue to make sowings of carrot, lettuce and spinach. Sow spring maturing cabbage using varieties such as April Sowings of broad bean and dwarf french beans can still be made until the middle of the month. Regularly pick runner

and french beans and courgettes to encourage further cropping. Pot-grown sweet corn can be planted out and it is best to place the plants in blocks rather than rows spacing them out about 45cm (18”) apart each way. At this time herbs such as thyme and sage produce fresh healthy new stems which if cuttings are taken will quickly root. After all your efforts in growing soft fruit, its time to make the most of those strawberries, raspberries, redcurrants, whitecurrants, cherries and rhubarb. Surplus strawberry runners should be removed by cutting them close to the plants.

Gardening is not an instantaneous hobby. It takes time and effort for which you may not see the pay-off until even the following year. So why not try sowing… Anemone Sweetheart Mix My personal favourite, plant directly into the soil now. The tiny corms will produce large single blooms in an array of bright colours, a glowing mixture of crimson, scarlet, cerise, mauve, blue and white. They’re a hardy perennial and make excellent cut flowers. They’re ideal for beds and borders and they prefer full sun. Sowimh now will produce beautiful blooms at the start of the summer next year.

Go Bananas Easy to grow, it can grow 1m a year, with leaves 2m to 3m long. After several years it sends up a final ‘firework’; a huge, stunning flowering spike. The seed should be soaked for 24 hours in warm water prior to sowing, then sown in a warm place. Germination can be erratic, so it is best to sow in small individual pots, or between moist tissue paper in a plastic bag so that germinated seedlings can be removed without harming the others. Regular transplantation and heavy feeding of the young plants will maximise growth and result in an impressive plant up to 2m tall within 6 months. Warm bright conditions are needed at all times while the plant is growing. A brilliant plant for a tropical looking garden.

Alyssum Saxatile Golden Queen Seeds

A splash of bright yellow colour. Bright golden flowers on plants ideal for the rockery. Provides cascades of golden flowers for rockeries and dry walls. If you sow now it will begin flowering next April, so really not that long to wait.

YOU might see the stars doing it - you might think it’s easy to do but think twice before having any drastic colour change.

Long before any colour touches your head, your stylists must give you the full run-down about the colour you or they have

like painting a wall. You simply cannot remove what has been applied, and it will be there until it grows out - even if you cover it up. There is no product that makes colour disappear, so every colour applied over your old colour will be affected by all the colours you have used, even the semipermanent ones. So trying to go back blonde over brown hair is really going to change its condition

will affect anything else you put over it. If going lighter, then do so gradually. Apply a few highlights to build up the colour, but whatever else, do not dive in with the bleach pot and try to do it all at once because you WILL wreck your hair. When going darker over blonde hair, be sure to add warmth to the tone or you might be looking at more of a khaki shade than a subtle brown. Colouring hair is

chosen. If you’re going from blonde to dark, then you need to be warned that the colour may fade, and that you may need to repeat this more than a few times to make the colour stick, depending on the shade. This repeated colouring is what will cause problems in the future should you decide to return to your old blonde shade. Colouring hair isn’t

for the worst - as is stripping out your dark hair to go blonde. Any extremes will cause havoc with your hair, so how do you avoid causing too much damage? To begin with, your stylist should guide you through all the ins and outs before you start. If you have shoulderlength hair, then this change of colour will be on your hair for around three years and, thus,

an art. It’s not to be messed with, and certainly not to be done at home or by non-professionals. You’re dealing with chemicals, no matter what the TV adverts say. Trust me, colouring hair, if not done correctly, can take years to put right. As I always say, if you want it done correctly, then consult us, your stylists. That’s what we are here for!

The findings seem to contradict previous research, which linked caffeine intake to high blood pressure, or hypertension. High blood pressure affects one in four middle-aged people and can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and other illnesses. Beyond the age of 65, around half of Britons suffer from the condition, with millions having to take medication to treat it. A 10-year study by French scientists showed heavy tea drinkers had lower blood pressure, pulse

pressure and heart-rate than lighter drinkers. Heavy coffee drinkers were found to have slightly higher blood pressure than normal, but non-drinkers had the highest readings. Report author Bruno Pannier, from the Preventive and Clinical Investigations Centre in Paris, said it was possible that the flavonoids in tea had a relaxing effect on blood vessels. “The vasorelaxing compounds included in these beverages might be involved in these results, which has been suggested by the experimental data,” he added. The study, presented to the European Society of Hypertension in Milan, made no distinction between black, herbal or green teas. Researchers looked at the tea and coffee drinking habits of 180,000 men and wom-

en aged between 16 and 95. Subjects were asked to record their intake of coffee and tea and the results were divided into those who abstained, those who drank between one and four cups a day and those who drank more than that. The difference between the groups was small but scientifically significant, concluded the authors. Doctors have argued for years over the link between drinking coffee and tea and the risk of developing high blood pressure. While some studies suggest modest intake can reduce blood pressure, others have been inconclusive. However, Nottingham GP Ian Campbell said people should not take the findings of the French study to mean that they can drink even more tea and coffee. “This is a fairly unusual study and appears to go against conventional understanding of the effects of too much caffeine,” he said. “Nobody should be encouraged to drink more tea and coffee as a result of this. Current guidance that two or three cups a day is sufficient is worth sticking to.” According to current guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, doctors should “discourage the excessive consumption of coffee and other caffeine-rich products”.

Sniffing out bladder cancer

By Val Sainsbury SCIENTISTS in Britain have made a device which can “smell” bladder cancer in urine samples.

It uses a sensor to detect gaseous chemicals given off if cancer cells

are present. Early trials show the tests give accurate results more than nine times in 10. But experts are taking a cautious approach, saying more studies are needed to perfect the test before it can become widely available. Each year, around 10,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with bladder cancer and doctors have been searching for ways to spot this cancer at an earlier stage, when it is more

treatable. Many have been interested in urine odours, since past work suggests dogs can be trained to recognise the scent of cancer. Prof Chris Probert, from Liverpool University, and Prof Norman Ratcliffe, of the University of the West of England, have told the PLoS One journal that their new device can definitely read cancer smells. “It reads the gases that chemicals in the

urine can give off when the sample is heated,” said Prof Ratcliffe. To test their device, they used 98 samples of urine - 24 from men known to have bladder cancer and 74 from men with bladder-related problems but no cancer. Prof Probert said the results were most encouraging, but he admitted: “We now need to look at larger samples of patients to test the device further before it can be used in hospitals.”

Dr Sarah Hazell, senior science communication officer at Cancer Research UK, said: “It would be great to be able to detect the ‘smell’ of cancer in a robust and practical way. But, promising though this work is, we’re not there yet. “This latest method is still at an early stage of development, and needs to be tried out on a much larger set of samples, including samples from both

women and men.” She added: “The researchers say the test would be around 96% accurate in practice, and their findings are based only on a relatively small number of samples, taken from men only. “But it is another promising step towards detecting bladder cancer from urine samples, and something that would, ultimately, provide a less-invasive means of diagnosing the disease.”

Yoga? Forget it! Sing up and stay as fit as a fiddle! IT doesn’t seem to hit the right note, but scientists believe that singing in a choir or with a sporting crowd may give you more than just a feel-good factor.

Researchers in Sweden, investigating the effects of music on our well-being, have found the calming effects of collective singing are as beneficial to a person’s health as yoga. They discovered that when people participate in a choir, their heartbeats become synchronised, and their pulses increase and decrease in union. It also has a dramatic effect on an individual’s heart-rate variability - the change of intervals between each beat - which is linked to a reduced risk of cardiac disease. “Our hypothesis is that song is a form of regular, controlled breathing, since breathing out occurs on the song phrases and inhaling takes place between these,” said lead researcher Dr Björn Vickhoff, from the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg, “With every heartbeat, a person’s pulse is going up and down. For younger, healthier people, there is a greater variability and a smoother,

linked to the cardiac activity of the individual choir member. It also demonstrated that singing in unison had a synchronising effect, with the heart rate of the performers increasing and decreasing at the same time.

more pronounced beat. And this heart-rate variability is a predictor for heart disease and risk.” He added: “When you are singing, the heartbeat for the whole group is going up and down simultaneously. It gives you pretty much the same effect as yoga breathing. It helps you relax, and there are indications that it does provide a heart benefit.” The study, published

12th July - 18th July 2013

“You are having fun when you are singing, and that’s always a good thing,” said Dr Vickhoff. “And you are training your lungs to breathe better.” His team will now investigate whether collective singing really

does create a shared mental outlook amongst participants. “One needs think only of football stadiums, work songs, hymn singing at school, festival processions, religious choirs or military parades,’ he said.

in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, examined 15 teenagers who performed three different choral exercises: - monotone humming, singing a popular Swedish hymn, Härlig är Jorden, and chanting of a slow mantra. The heart rhythm of the choir members was registered as they performed in each case, and results showed the music’s melody was

Tesco food appeal collects 3.5m meals Following on from last week’s story, - generous customers helped to donate an incredible 3.5 million meals during Tesco’s National Food Collection appeal on 5th and 6th July, the equivalent of 26,000 trolleyloads of food.

Tesco held the appeal in partnership with Foodbanks charity, the Trussell Trust and food redistribution charity, FareShare in every one of its stores across the UK after new research showed nearly one in five people had suffered from some form of food poverty in the last twelve months. With school summer holidays approaching, the research also showed parents found the holidays a particularly difficult time to provide food for their children with as many as 70% of families currently suffering from food poverty relying on food given out by schools. During the collection, customers were asked to donate nonperishable food items such as long-life milk, cereals and tinned vegetables and fruit. The food, weighing in at 1,500 tonnes, will now be transported to regional FareShare depots and local foodbanks across the country to help

Page 42

people in times of crisis. The total amount collected includes Tesco’s 30% top up and collections in Tesco’s dedicated online grocery delivery centres. Tesco plans to introduce permanent collection points in some of its stores before its next national collection in December. Rebecca Shelley, Group Corporate Affairs Director at Tesco said: “Once again, our customers have shown extraordinary generosity and made this the biggest food collection the UK has ever seen – so thank you to everyone who donated. Together with the extra 30% that Tesco has contributed, the food we collected will help hundreds of thousands of people in need across the UK. “The work we do with the Trussell Trust and FareShare plays a vital role in making sure people have access to food in times of crisis, especially as food poverty is increasing in

the UK. “I’d also like to say a special thanks to all our colleagues and the volunteers who made the collection possible - we’re incredibly proud of their hard work and dedication.” Lindsay Boswell, CEO of FareShare said: “With more people turning to charities for food than at any other time in FareShare’s history, we know the summer holidays are going to be difficult for many. At a time of such need we are incredibly grateful to Tesco customers for their generosity. Thanks to you we will be able to provide the 900 charities we support across the country with even more food. These charities offer not only a meal but invaluable support to some of the poorest people in our society. With more than a third of these organisations helping to feed vulnerable children, your support really will help the thousands of families

struggling to afford food this summer.” Chris Mould, Chairman of the Trussell Trust said: “In the last three months alone Trussell Trust foodbanks have given three days’ emergency food to over 150,000 people in crisis and we know that the summer holidays can tip many low-income families over the edge. The extraordinary generosity of tens of thousands of members of the public across the UK at Tesco last weekend will help foodbanks to stop thousands of families from facing hunger this summer. We’re immensely grateful to Tesco for their invaluable support, the 30 percent top up is a wonderful gift to our foodbanks which will make the public’s donations go much further.” Tesco customers at the Park Road Extra store in Liverpool proved to be the most generous in the UK, donating the equivalent of nearly 21,000 meals, including Tesco’s 30% top up, to people in need. Customers at the Grahams Road store in Falkirk donated a fantastic 10,000 meals to become the most generous customers in Scotland, while the Pontypridd Extra in Wales collected more than 6,200 meals. In Northern Ireland, the Bentrim Road store in Lisburn collected an impressive 6,600 meals for people in need.

Treat week As the sun began to shine in the UK last week, so did the Brits; the feelgood factor scaled new heights over the weekend, according to Waitrose. And so did sales of treats.

With soaring temperatures and sporting victories Britain gave itself permission to indulge as sparkling wine sales bubbled over, up 60 per cent. Rose was up by 68 per cent and cider was up 70 per cent but the drink of Feel Great Britannia was Pimms, up a sensational 316 per cent. The cooking action was outdoors, with households getting out the BBQ as sales of charcoal were up 450 per cent. Barbecue meats were flying off the shelves too, up a whopping 66 per cent and burgers sales were doubled on last year. Pre packed rolls were up 80 per cent. Other easy to prepare foods fared well with feta cheese up 69

per cent, dips up 45 per cent. As it was a winning Wimbledon weekend, sales of strawberries were up 62 per cent and cream up 70 per cent suggesting the two really are perfect partners. To cool our excitement, indulgent ice cream was also up 144 per cent. David Jones, Supply chain director said: ‘We expect the feel good factor to continue well into this week following Murray’s historic win, continued soaring temperatures and the start of the Ashes. ‘The boom in alfresco dining means customers will be opting for quick to prepare foods like salads and dips as they enjoy basking in the evening sunshine in preference to the kitchen. We also expect celebratory drinks like Pimm’s and fizz will be top of customers’ shopping lists. ‘The feel good factor will also lead to a boom in treat purchases with cream cakes, ice creams and flowers filling shopping baskets this week.’

By Jav THE all-new 2014 Honda Jazz hatchback has been leaked online since photographs from the Japanese brochure were uploaded to an Indian website.

They show the new supermini MPV in full production specification, and the picture suggests that the thirdgeneration Honda Jazz looks fatter than previous generations. The pictures definitely show how the design of the latest Jazz has been influenced by the current Civic model. The rectangular headlights and grille all form a single blade, running across the entire width of the car, and new, larger air-intakes make it look meaner than before. A sharp crease line now runs from behind the front wheel-arch through the door handles to the rear light clusters. The rear of the car reflects a similar angular style, with tail-lights either side of the rear screen, and a single chrome bar across the boot lid. It is called the Hon-

Honda Jazz Fit as a fiddle!

da Fit in Japan, but it will still be called the Jazz when it goes on sale in the UK later next year. And there were some more clues about the new car. They include an interior shot of the dials, showing an automatic gearbox layout and a “power/ charge” meter, which confirms that a hybrid model will continue to be offered. And judging by the

aerodynamic wheeltrims, and the switch to lithium-ion battery technology, the next Jazz hybrid could boast class-leading efficiency. The 2014 Honda Jazz is likely to get a 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine in European and Indian markets. As has been made plain already, this innovative engine is the first of Honda’s “Earth Dreams Technology”,

with a diesel engine capable of delivering at least 120 HP, and a maximum torque of 221 lb-ft, and CO2 emissions of just 94 g/km. Initially, Honda have plans to offer a diesel engine for Civic, to be followed by the CR-V crossover, which is built at their plant in Swindon. However, this engine is the lightest diesel version, with an engine weight of less than

47kg. Besides the 1.6L diesel engine, Honda will, reportedly, also offer a 1.5-litre engine for both markets. And the 1.2L and 1.4L engines will be offered in several other markets, also with a 3-cylinder petrol engine which is still at the development stage. The new Jazz is scheduled to make its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show in November, but it is not yet clear

whether his model will keep its clever, flip-up folding seats. But with the new Nissan Note becoming more of a traditional super-mini rival, the Jazz has even fewer competitors to worry about. Besides, they will have enough to concern themselves with cars like the Ford BMAX and the Citroen C3 Picasso standing as genuine rivals.

What a scorcher… for just £2½ million! THIS is what you flaming well get for 2½ million quid - the Italian Icona Vulcano supercar!

It is a one-off, twoseater supercar, which will make its UK debut in September at the Salon Prive Concours d’Elegance, held at Syon House, across the River Thames from Kew Gardens, in West London. Together with the stunning, head-turning looks, this unique machine also boasts some red-hot tech underneath.

12th July - 18th July 2013

That’s because the low-slung thoroughbred is powered by a bespoke, V12 hybrid powertrain, called the H-Turismo V12. The 6.0-litre petrol engine produces a massive 790hp, with an additional 160hp coming from the electric motor mounted on the rear axle - giving a grand total of 950hp. That makes it more powerful than the GT car of the moment, the new Ferrari F12berlinetta, although it is closer in concept to the new breed of hybrid hypercars – McLaren’s P1 and Ferrari, with their LaFerrari.

Sport In Brief Record-breaking Aussie

AUSTRALIAN teenager Ashton Agar broke the record for the highest score by a Test No.11 in the first Ashes Test against England at Trent Bridge yesterday (Thursday). The left-arm spinner, making his Test debut, was out for an astonishing 98 after beating the previous record of 95 made by West Indies’ Tino Best against England at Edgbaston last year. Agar and Phillip Hughes (81 not out) also surpassed the record Test partnership of 151 for the 10th wicket. Australia were finally dismissed for 280, a first-innings lead of 65, and England lost two wickets in reply before skipper Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen steadied the ship.

F1 ban pit-lane media

FOLLOWING the incident at last Sunday’s German Grand Prix, in which a cameraman was injured by a loose wheel from Mark Webber’s Red Bull, TV reporters and cameramen are now banned from the pit lane throughout ontrack sessions at all Grands Prix. But stills photographers newspaper journalists will still be welcomed. Cameraman Paul Allen suffered a broken collarbone and cracked ribs after being hit by the wheel. The following day FIA, the governing body banned anyone other than marshals and team personnel from the pit lane during qualifying and the race, with “approved media” to be confined to the pit wall.

Parry’s in the swing

GOLFER John Parry set an early pace on the first day of the Scottish Open, at Castle Stuart, finishing eight-under par on 64.

Simon Khan was a shot further behind, while Shane Lowry and Phil Mickelson were among a number of players on six-under. Last year’s winner, Jeev Milkha Singh, was five-under, one shot ahead of Scots Stephen Gallacher and Craig Lee. “I played really solid,” said 26-year-old Parry after his eight birdies. “I felt pretty comfortable.”

Rooney fit as a fiddle

NEW Manchester United manager David Moyes believes Wayne Rooney will stay at Old Trafford, especially as he has got himself into splendid condition. Moyes, who managed Rooney at Everton before selling him to United, said: “A lot has been written about me and Wayne over the years, but we have a good relationship. “He has trained really well and the football coaches tell me they’ve never seen him in better shape.”

The Lions are roaring success AFTER 16 years without a tour success, the British and Irish Lions secured an unforgettable series victory against Australia last Saturday with an memorable 4116 victory in Sydney.

Having scraped through to a narrow victory in the opening Test, then failing by just two points to clinch the series a week later, they were able to celebrate the Lions’ fifth success in Australia since World War II – and a scoring record to boot! It was also a first tour triumph by the combined England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland team since Ian McGeechan’s Lions headed to South Africa in 1997. The success was down to coach Warren Gatland, who included no fewer than 11 Welshmen in his XV - he is also the Wales coach - but, controversially, dropped stalwart Brian O’Driscoll. The Irish centre was expected to take over the skipper’s role from Sam Warburton, who failed to recover from a torn hamstring. But a

stunned O’Driscoll was not even included in the squad. All that was forgotten, however, as the Lions pulled off a devastating victory. It served to mend any grudges there might have been, and the veteran Irish player, on his last tour, was quick to offer his congratulations to Gatland. More than 100 fans welcomed them on their arrival at Heathrow Airport on Wednesday morning, and a huge cheer went up when Warburton emerged with the trophy on top of his baggage trolley. “It is a lot cleaner than it was Saturday night, that’s for sure,” said the proud Scot. “There were a few bottles of champagne in the tro-

phy and it was a great feeling. “It has been a long time coming, this Lions tour, so it is nice to come back with a trophy. It has only been done nine times in 125 years, so all the players know they are part of a very prestigious group and they are very proud of that.” Welshman Jamie Roberts, who did recover from a hamstring injury to claim a place in the starting line-up, believes it could be a springboard for his country’s hopes in the World Cup. Roberts, who is moving from Cardiff Blues to Racing Metro in Paris, is already looking forward to the November internationals against South Africa, Argentina, Ton-

ga and Australia. “Having seen how the Welsh guys have performed on this tour, it is hugely promising as we look forward to 2015 and the World Cup,” he said. Welsh full-back Leigh Halfpenny was named Man of the Series thanks to his cool head and immaculate kicking. And in this final showdown, he set about the Wallabies magnificently, contributing to two tries and converting seven kicks for a 21-point haul. “I have dreamed of this my whole life,” he said. “Every single one of us has contributed to this. Winning Man of the Series is what dreams are made of, but I couldn’t have done it without the whole squad.”

Palms cut down by Bar 180! THIRTY-FOUR League matches and unbeaten since 18th May 2012 that’s the staggering record of a hardened Bar 180 A side. That record is now confined to the annals of Oasis Fm Darts League history, and it’s all down to a superb performance by a side who have won this division twice before. And they used that experience to good effect last Friday. Indeed, they were 4-1 up after the singles and seemingly cruising to victory against Palms Sports

Bar A, with a 180 and 106 check from Richard en route. Palms then rallied to take both doubles legs to set up a tantalising trebles decider, which the San Blas outfit took gleefully. Palms remain top, but The Pub have cut their lead to just one point after edging a cracking match at La Caña Pirates. A man-of-thematch performance by Caña’s Ricky kept his side in it right to the death, only for the visitors to nick the trebles and the win. Despite the 6-2 score-

line, the Phoenix Bar’s win over the Naturals was closer than it looked, a few missed doubles costing them dearly. Target Army bashed bottom side Scruffy Macs 8-0, while Target Titans almost did the same to the Playboys, who managed just a single point. It is a testament to the competitiveness of this league, that of the 18 ties played last week, 12 of them went down to the last leg! Five of those came in Division 1. A first maximum from Bryn helped

Chipeque squeak past Summerlands, while Gaffers B took the trebles to beat Emerald Lounge. John was the star man for Bar 180 B as they drew with the Bytes, but the draws didn’t stop there. leaders Rood were held at Trap Door, and Naughty Nautas let the last leg get away against Bar 180 C. Top scorers in this section were Marilyns, who claimed their first win of the campaign with a 6-2 success over Amistad 1. Could Emerald Sham-

rocks be the team to challenge Tenerife Sun in Division 2? Well, a 7-1 thumping of Picassos suggests that they might be! For themselves, Tenerife Sun were pushed all the way to the trebles leg, which they took to scrape past Pas O Nadas. Elaine and Joan won their singles and doubles together for Phoenix Flames, although they were just pipped by Bar 180 D, mostly through Wayne’s fine performance. Amistad 2 entertained Sundowners for

the second week running, taking one more point than last time to beat them 5-3. Yet another team winning by the odd leg were La Caña Lancers at Ourplace Playgirls, while Walter’s first 180 helped make the journey back home a little easier for the Rebels, as they tied a closelyfought match at Barracuda Hunters. Almost 70 players have entered the singles knockout being played tonight (Friday) at six venues across the south of Tenerife. Good luck to everyone.

Hamilton has lost that formula for happiness THE weight of the world is upon the shoulders of Lewis Hamilton - and not just because his Mercedes car isn’t performing well.

The 28-year-old Formula One star admits he’s been “turned upside-down” following another bustup with girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger. After his disappointing fifth-place finish in Sunday’s German

Grand Prix at the Nurburgring, He told Sky Sports: “I’m trying my hardest to be positive. “But I’m going through a really, really tough time at the moment with the loss of someone really, really special in my life. “My world has turned

upside down, but I have a job to motivate my team, and, if I come in with my head down and negative energy, then that goes around to all my mechanics who work day and night. And I don’t ever want that. The former world champion added: “I’m really trying to pull myself together and keep my head up, but it’s so hard to do.” Hamilton, who left the McLaren team after several years last summer, had been dating Scherzinger on

and off for a number of years. The X Factor judge and former Pussycat Dolls singer has often been seen supporting Hamilton from the Formula One team garage. The pressure of having busy careers and living apart is believed to have put a strain on their relationship, and he confirmed their split when interviewed by Sky. Despite what has been described as an “experimental” first season with Mercedes, Hamilton has acquitted

himself well, and is fourth in the overall standings, 58 points behind Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel. The three-time champion, who won his home race on Sunday to maintain his lead at the top of the standings, appears to be unstoppable. But Hamilton seems to have suffered more than most drivers with the new, compulsory, Pirelli tyres this season, and on Sunday he was heard to tell the team: “The others are on different tyres to me.”

In a previous race which slipped away from him after he had been told to watch his speed to preserve the tyres, the frustrated Brit complained: “I can’t go any slower.” Hamilton always knew it would be a tricky initial season for him at Mercedes, and he is confident next season both he and the German team will make their mark. It is to his credit that he has been able to stay in touch with the championship leaders, despìte all the setbacks.

Murray becomes first British male champion since 1936!

ANDY MURRAY ended the incredible 77-year British tennis void by winning the Men’s Singles at Wimbledon on Sunday.

Fred Perry, in 1936, was the last Brit to win the game’s greatest prize of all, and the first person Murray sought out in the players’ box was Ivan Lendl, the man who has guided him to the pinnacle of world tennis in less than 18 months. Murray’s beaten opponent, Novak Djokovic, is officially ranked No1, but the Scot’s 6-4, 75, 6-4 success in front of a packed Centre Court was proof enough that there is nothing between them now. For Lendl, an eighttime Grand Slam champion but never a winner at Wimbledon, the feeling was almost as good as he sat, impassively, watching Murray overcome his Serbian opponent after a mighty battle. The 53-year-old former No1, born in Czechoslovakia and now a US citizen, has added a steely, neversay-die presence to Murray’s game - taken from his own scrapbook - and how it shows. The scoreline did not do justice to what was a magnificent, spinetingling match in which Murray dominated for long periods. He even fought back from a 4-1 deficit to win the second set and leave Djokovic on the back foot. The 2011 Wimbledon champion simply had no answer to Murray’s ferocious play, and he duly acknowledged his victor at the end of a magnificent three hours in SW19. A magnanimous Djokovic said: “Congratulations to Andy - you absolutely deserved this win. You played incredible tennis. I know how much it means to your whole country.” He also praised Murray’s team,

Page 54

saying: “I know how much it means to them and how much it means to all of you guys in the whole country.” Murray, caught up in the bewilderment of the moment, managed to tell BBC viewers: “I really don’t know what happened. I can’t even remember - that’s how well I was concentrating.” Murray, who lost last year’s final in four sets against Roger Federer and wept during his TV interview, added: “It feels slightly different to last year. That was one of the toughest moments of my career, so to win it this year… “It was an unbelievably tough match. I don’t know how I managed to come through that last game. I’ve played Novak many times and he’s going to go down as one of the biggest fighters ever. “He’s come back so

many times from losing positions, but I just managed to squeeze through in the end.” The 26-year-old from Dunblane also praised his back-up team, saying: “They’ve stuck by me through a lot of tough moments. And this one’s for Ivan as well. “I know he did everything to try to win this when he was playing, I’m glad I was able to help him out when he was coaching. He’s been brilliant with me, and I’m not easy at times!” As well as his everpresent girlfriend, Judy Sears, and his mother Judy, a professional tennis coach in her own right, a galaxy of celebrities cheered Murray on to success. They included Prime Minister David Cameron, pop star and tennis nut Sir Cliff Richard, Manchester United’s

Wayne Rooney, Olympic cycling hero Sir Chris Hoy, and others to numerous to mention. Even The Queen shared the nation’s joy by sending him a message of congratulations, while Mr Cameron spoke on TV on Monday of why Murray should be knighted in due course. A peak audience of 17.3 million viewers tuned in to BBC One to watch the final - the highest audience for a Wimbledon final since 1990. The players have met four times in recent Grand Slam finals, Djokovic prevailing in the 2011 and 2013 Australian Open, Murray winning his first major title in last year’s US Open - and now this, the finest of all triumphs. The two are almost the same age, Murray just a week older than Djokovic. They

attended training camp together in Spain and the rivalry has become an important part of their respective careers. They are the two highest-ranked players in the world, with Djokovic in the top spot since November 2012, and Murray reclaiming the No. 2 ranking in May. For what it’s worth, Murray, not a man to worry about money by all accounts, added £1.6m to his alreadyvast tennis winnings. And, according to most experts, he can expect to earn up to £50m in the next year on endorsements alone. What now for Britain’s latest golden boy? A relaxing fortnight’s holiday with his girlfriend Kim Sears in America or in the Caribbean, of course. Then it’s back to the grindstone for our Wimbledon hero as he

prepares to defend his US Open title in New York next month. When all the fuss was over and Murray returned to normality, he spoke of how the cancer battle being endured by his best pal, Ross Hutchins, has changed his perspective on things. Hutchins, 28, who finished chemotherapy last month, is hoping to be given the allclear soon, and Murray, who has given him tremendous support, said: “When he asks you how you’re feeling - like after my semi-finals you think twice.” He added: “It’s not that bad in comparison to what he’s going through.” And that tells you exactly just why Murray will never get carried away with his success – why his feet will always remain firmly on the ground.
