Kill your speed SPAIN’S traffic department is waging war on speeding, and it applies especially to Tenerife drivers.

If you are caught driving over the speed limit, you will face a hefty fine, or even a prison sentence. The surveillance campaign on our Island roads by the Guardia Civil has come into force because around 500 people die every year in accidents caused by speeding vehicles. Two years ago, 475 people died in traffic accidents, with speed being one of the contributing factors. Both the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the European Union (EU) are advocates of speed checks in an

attempt to reduce traffic accidents. Nearly one million drivers are detected speeding on Spanish roads every year. So, in order to reduce this figure, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has this week begun a strict clampdown, including speed traps - which is bound to shock the reckless racers - to increase drivers’ awareness of the dangers involved in speeding. The surveillance is taking place on conventional roads and, especially, those classified as accident black-spots. In a similar campaign, held last April, over 30,000 drivers were caught speeding. Just last Thursday, a driver was stunned by the local police in Santa Cruz when he was caught travelling at

109km/h down a street with a limitation of 40km/h! As well as roadside

checks and monitoring performed by the Guardia Civil, the traffic cops will be airborne

in a helicopter, fitted with radar to trap the speedsters. The campaign is

Dangers of putting your foot down *A 5% increase in speed causes about a 10% increase in accidents which cause injuries and 20% in fatal accidents. *At 80km/h, it’s virtually impossible to stop for a pedestrian, but at 30km/h, the risk of killing a pedestrian is reduced to 10%. *Driving at 120km/h requires a distance greater than a football field to stop the vehicle. This distance not only depends on the vehicle, but the driver’s psychological condition. *Speeding not only affects road safety, it also has a negative influence on the environment, quality of life and fuel consumption.

being communicated across all media, with the ultimate message: speed is the main cause of death on our roads. Spain’s Road Safety Act sets the regulations applicable to generic and specific limits of speed, regarding overtaking, distance between vehicles, etc. Failure to follow these rules is classified as “serious” or “very serious”, punishable by fines from 100-600 euros. You may also lose 2-6 points from your licence, depending on the offence. According to the severity of the motoring offence, prison sentences of three to six months are also being issued, plus community service of 6-12 months. And, most painful of all to the road racers, you could lose your licence for anything from between 1-4 years.

Missing at sea... one giant yellow bottle YOU must remember the huge publicity stunt, featuring a 30foot plastic bottle and arranged by a Norwegian softdrinks company last March.

Well, guess what? The monster, yellow-coloured container, fitted with a comprehensive tracking system, has gone missing! The bottle, released into the Atlantic Ocean in mid-March from San Miguel Marina here in the South, was said to be carrying the largestever message in a bottle. It was being tracked by satellite on its journey across the Atlantic to the Caribbean. The idea of Norwegian-based Solo was to promote the company’s soft drink outside Norway, with organisers hoping the ocean currents would take it around the world. The bottle’s tracking equipment was

meant to allow fans and Solo to track it on an online global map.

23rd August - 29th August 2013

It also has a 360-degree camera, which was taking pictures every

eight hours. But after strong solar storms last week, the satellite lost

contact and the company is no longer receiving information. In other

words, Solo has lost its bottle! Solo chief Joakim Sande said: “ We are asking people in the area to be vigilant and notify us with any information.” The big yellow bottle was expected to cross the Atlantic in 70 days, but it has taken more than 150 days so far and does not appear to have been washed up ashore. The company says all kinds of security measures have been taken to ensure that it will not be a danger to others at sea. It has an Automatic Identification System (AIS) and navigation lights, plus built-,in radar-reflecting material that “cannot sink”, according to Solo. “It will be interesting to see where it makes landfall,” said Mr Sande. “We expect to receive responses from ships in transit, or someone who has spotted it from the air - or even from someone who comes across a big yellow bottle on his local beach.”

News In Brief Tourism’s shot in the arm

TENERIFE’S tourism industry generated 8,855 new work contracts in July, which was a 22.6% improvement against the same period last year. It means 1,635 more contracts were signed, making July the best month in the last four years for jobs in this sector. In the first seven months of the year, the tourist industry was responsible for 44,031 new work contracts, representing an annual 12.3% growth. Overall in Spain, there were 34 million visitors to the country up to the end of July, - a 3.9% improvement from last year and a record.

Police hold drug suspects

GRANADILLA’S Guardia Civil officers have arrested three men, aged 20, 23 and 35, on suspicion of drug offences. The trio, from Adeje, Icod and Santa Cruz, respectively, were stopped in a vehicle at a security checkpoint on the TF-1. One person, said to be carrying 100gm of cocaine, was held, as were the other two, accused of being accomplices.

Boy, 12, nearly drowns

A 12-YEAR-OLD child was admitted to hospital after nearly drowning in a hotel pool in Costa Adeje on Tuesday. The boy, a Russian national, was pulled out of the pool by the lifeguard and given mouth-tomouth resuscitation. Emergency services who attended believe the youngster may have hit his head on something after falling accidentally. He remains in a critical condition.

Hunter shot by accident

A MAN suffered shoulder wounds after being accidentally shot while hunting in the Los Quemados area of Granadilla. The Island’s rescue helicopter was summoned because of the awkward terrain, and the 48-year-old victim was transferred to hospital in Candelaria.

Boost for Social Security

MORE than 132,000 foreign nationals have left the Spanish Social Security system, according to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security. The majority came from Romania, Morocco, Ecuador, China, Bolivia and Colombia, but 600,000 Europeans are still working.

Don’t overdo the holiday boozing THE Foreign Office has launched a campaign to combat excessive drinking by young tourists. New statistics show peer pressure and cheap drinks can lead to more than a holiday hangover Under the banner On holiday, don’t let drink do your talking, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is encouraging youngsters on holiday to think before and while they drink to avoid putting themselves at risk of serious harm. Expats are being asked to share this important message with visiting friends and family to help ensure they spend their time enjoying their holidays - not in hospital, jail or worse! New research shows that 51% of those in the 16-24 age group say they are likely to drink more on holiday than at home. Some 62% attributed this to cheaper alcohol, while peer pressure is also a major factor, with 40% of those surveyed saying they had felt pressure from friends to drink more than they wanted to. The survey, covering 2,479 UK adults, was conducted online by Censuswide. Spain’s Consular staff have already been called on this summer to come to the aid of British nationals who find themselves in trouble after drinking to excess. Will Middleton, Consular Regional Director for Spain said: “Going on holiday is a great opportunity to relax and have fun with family and friends, and enjoying a drink can be part of that. “We’re not telling people to stop drinking, but we do want people to be aware of the consequences of drinking to excess and our research shows almost half of young people understand them already. “Laws and customs regarding alcohol vary from country to country. For example, lower limits for drink-driving in Spain, and “free-pour” rather than specific measures, which makes it harder to control how much you are drinking. “It’s important to find out about local laws, including on alcohol consumption, to avoid a

night in a police cell or even a criminal record. “Drinking can impair judgement. The effect of being hospitalised or arrested overseas goes far beyond a ruined holiday, and can have a devastating impact on family and friends - financially and emotionally. “So our message is have fun in the sun, but drink responsibly so you don’t put yourself at risk of harm.” One example of what can happen is the story of Jake, who fell from a balcony after a night out with friends. His moving video story can be seen on w w w. y o u t u b e . c o m / watch?v=hhxqyPUyiTs The FCO is also encouraging holiday-makers to show respect and consideration to other tourists and local people. The findings revealed that excessive alcohol consumption resulted in young British holidaymakers abroad engaging in risky or disrespectful behaviour: *23% of UK youngsters have gone swimming while drunk *11% of young Brits have put themselves in a vulnerable situation with a stranger while drunk *26%) of 16-24s have done something while drunk, of which they were ashamed TOP TIPS FOR A PEACEFUL HOLIDAY Remember: tolerance to alcohol may change in the heat - and bars in Spain often serve larger measures than in the UK. It is worth alternating your drinks with water or soft drinks. Protect your drink: To avoid the risk of your drink being spiked, keep an eye on it at all times, and don’t accept drinks from strangers unless you see them being poured at the bar. Stay close to your pals: If you are drinking with friends, look out for each other. If they seem drunk or act out of the ordinary, make sure you get them home safely. Never let a friend go home alone, or with someone he or she doesn’t know. Drink respectfully: This includes showing respect and consideration to other holiday-makers and local people.

Lanzarote continues battle against drilling L AN Z ARO T E Cabildo is determined to halt plans by Spanish energy giant Repsol to explore for oil in its waters.

In 2012, Repsol was given the green light by the Spanish Government to proceed with offshore oil drilling in the Canary Islands, which has led to fierce opposition. Lanzarote chiefs fear that an oil spill could seriously damage the environment and social well-being of islanders, which is why they are continuing to rally public opposition to the scheme. They have even gone

online with an environmental impact report produced by the company, which outlines the “worst-case scenario” involving an oil spill. And despite a favourable assessment by Repsol, Lanzarote Cabildo has retaliated, saying: “In the face of the manifest evidence of the risk that the exploration could create in the Canary Islands, the decision to suspend the project indefinitely should be taken immediately.” Repsol’s report read: “The oil consortium recognises one of the most important dangers highlighted systematically by those opposed to the exploration project: the implicit risk of spills washing ashore

on the Canary Islands’ beaches. “In short, taking into account the worst-case scenario and the associated probability of a blowout, we believe that the environmental and social risks of a spill caused by a blowout on the coast are moderate.” For its part, the Spanish Government argued that it would help to ease dependence on crude imports - more than 99% of its oil is imported. Repsol, which has done its best to allay fears of a spill, says the drilling site earmarked off Lanzarote could lead to the biggest hydrocarbon find in Spanish history. The energy firm, which

expects to start drilling next year, plans to sink two wells, some 35 miles east of Lanzarote. It believes they could yield as much as 100,000 barrels of oil per day. The company estimates that the Canary Islands could meet 10% of Spain’s hydro-carbon needs. And Repsol’s environmental impact report also says the chance of a blowout is one in 50,000. In the event of such an accident, it assures the non-believers that adequate safety and prevention measures in already in place. As for the Canaries’ coastline being ruined, it adds that any oil spill would be more likely to affect Africa’s coastline.

Spain’s richest woman dies ROSALIA MERA, rated the richest woman in Spain and co-founder of Zara, has died at the age of 69.

Said by Forbes to be worth some 5bn euros, the former seamstress - along with her then husband Amancio Ortega - co-founded Zara in 1975 in La Coruña, in Spain’s Galicia region, where she

was born. The Spanish clothing store, which has grown into one of the largest retail chains of all, now has 1,763 stores around the world. Ms Mera, believed to have had a brain haemorrhage while on holiday in Minorca, died in hospital in La Coruña on 15th August. Zara, is under the umbrella of retail giants Inditex, which she also helped found with her former husband and

was a major shareholder. Forbes. the leading US financial magazine, says she was the world’s 195th richest person and also named her the world’s “wealthiest self-made woman”. The Inditex empire includes many of the bestknown budget highstreet brands - Zara, Bershka, Pull&Bear and Stradivarius - plus underwear chain Oysho

and up-market interiors firm Zara Home. Ms Mera also became known for voicing opposition to the current Conservative Government’s plans to change Spanish abortion laws. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, a close ally of the Catholic Church on moral and social issues, has repeatedly said he will revise Spain’s abortion law, although he has not yet offered any proposals.

THE research being carried out by Canarian Weekly is rolling along quite nicely. I still welcome emails and comments about your own personal experiences. I have spoken with a large family this week, who have been staying All-Inclusive, and they’re very disgruntled because their stay has not matched expectations. The glossy brochure promised an almost Caribbean-style experience; instead, they’re staying in an old shabby apartment block, at the top of a hill. It’s the last accommodation on the way out of a resort, with no lift, no air-conditioning, one small pool, poor food … shall I go on? Needless to say, they won’t be returning to Tenerife in a hurry. So it’s no wonder that recent figures released by banking group La Caixa state that the economic crisis has taken its toll on the leisure industry in the Canaries. They say that in the last four years, a total of 2,869 bars have closed down, 16.7% of all registered establishments throughout the islands. In 2008, the archipelago had 17,159 bars, and last year that figure dropped to 14,290. During that period, 712 bars closed in the Islands. As you would expect, the Canaries’ rate of closure is higher than the national average. The report puts the fall in consumption down to the high unemployment - 33.69% - in the islands. “The purchasing power of consumers has dropped and not just for the unemployed, but in society in general,” said Francisco Perez, sector president of the Chamber of Commerce of Gran

Canaria. “That’s because even those working are afraid to spend as the general trend is to save.” Perez said that in the past two years, in Gran Canaria alone, 1,500 bars had closed their doors, and as many again are pending closures. So it’s not just here. Further blame is put on the changes in sales tax that increased, which means businesses paying IGIC at 7% instead of 2%. Perez’s view is that the key to improving the situation is this: “Since we have fewer customers, what the government should do is lower Canarian sales taxes.” Other costs, such as electricity and taxes levied on alcohol, have also increased and are borne by the entrepreneurs themselves. Perez, seems to be one of the few people talking sense. He goes on to say that more flexible policies and standards should be adopted. “We live on tourism and yet, there are areas in which the hours are restricted, and at midnight the terraces have to be closed and brought in,” he said. “I do not understand how you want to promote the islands, For example, you attract cruise tourism, and then do not support this strategic sector. “Add on top of this the drop in footfall through visitors being trapped in their hotels, and you can see why the closures have come about.” The All-Inclusive debate rolls on. Until next week…

New UK winter easyJet flights The Tenerife Cabildo have confirmed that easyJet will be operating a new flight from Newcastle to Tenerife, twice a week, Wednesday and Saturday beginning on 6th November.

Already easyJet offers regular air capacity of over 12,000 seats to Tenerife from the UK. Economic Vice President and Chief Cabildo Insular de Turismo, Carlos Alonso, noted that “this new flight adds to those already connecting the island with the United Kingdom, not only from Newcastle but from other cities, which will bring more air capacity from what is our main source market of travellers, with nearly 1.6 million tourists received in 2012.” Excluding the new Newcastle route, easyJet flies over 12,000 visitors to Tenerife from the UK, representing an increase of over 6 percent from last year. The airline currently oper-

ates other routes such as Bristol, Edinburgh, London-Gatwick and Manchester, and all have increased their capacity. London-Gatwick has the highest accumulated number of seats nearly 50 percent of the total. Up to eight companies operate flights between the Island and the UK. Easyjet is the fifth in terms of capacity in a list which is headed by Thomson Airways, Ryanair, Monarch and Thomas Cook, and which now also includes British Airways, Jet2.

com and Norwegian. Research shows that the British tourist who comes to visit the Island has a median family income of 56,000 euros. 54.2% of British visitors book independently and then the remaining 44.8% prefer a package holiday. Paul Simmons, easyJet’s UK Director, commented: “We’ve already carried nearly 34 million passengers from across our network of 11 UK bases in the past year and we are hugely excited to be in a position to expand our des-

tinations further to offer more choice to our customers this winter. The airline will add a twice–weekly winter sun route to Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands from Newcastle International Airport from 6 November 2013.” Travellers looking to book their winter flights, accommodation and transfers in one go can find a wide range of flexible and affordable breaks from all easyJet airports on the easyJet Holidays website: www. easyJet.com/holidays.

Canarian crime stats are falling The Ministry of the Interior has issued figures which show that, as a whole, crime throughout the Canaries has fallen by 3.1% compared to last year.

Good news, yet, within those figures burglaries rose by 8.1% and thefts increased by 6.2%, during the same period. In total 47,921

criminal offences were reported in the first six months of the year in the Archipelago, that’s 1,522 fewer than in the same period in 2012. Compared to the mainland the drop in overall crime recorded in the Canaries is slightly better than that found in the whole of Spain (2.7 per cent), while in the islands as well as the rest of Spain certain types of crimes are on the increase. The figures show

23rd August - 29th August 2013

that 2,177 robberies took place in Canarian homes (163 more than in the first half of 2012) and 17,200 thefts (1,007 more than last year). However, the total number of robberies (7,287) hardly changed and motor vehicle theft fell 10.2%, from 1093 to 981. The figures also reflect a decline in reported drug trafficking offences by 4.9% from 349 to 332 and criminal damage reducing by 6.9% from 4437 to 4132.

Drowning victims are mounting up THE Canary Islands has so far recorded 18 people drowning in private swimming pools or the sea this year.

And throughout Spain, no fewer than 114 people in all have perished in this manner, or in rivers. Tragically, 53 of these were in July, this year’s “black” month for drownings, although at least four have been reported every month. The worst months

Page 8

besides July and August have been April and June, with 11 and 14 deaths respectively. Some 25% of the victims were in the under-60 age group, while 39 were older and 23 were children. The ages of the others who drowned have not been specified but, curiously, 93 of the victims have been male. Apart from two drownings in the Balearic Islands, most of the deaths have happened in tourists’ coastal hotspots. The highest number,

59, occurred in the sea, and a further 23 in swimming pools. The latest victims, last Sunday, were two teenage girls from Madrid, whose bodies were found in a reservoir in the El Escorial district, and a 38-yearold man, who drowned in a Zaragoza well. Last Friday also saw the deaths of a young man in the Cala del Plomo cove in Níjar, Almería, and an 81-yearold French tourist, off the beach of Vilafortuny in the Tarragona province.

Cheers! Jobless will cash in on a bumper wine-grape harvest

Cocktail event

The municipality of Arona have announced that they will be running their ‘Ruta de Cócteles’ next month for the second year.

Last year, the initial event, was a great success. Arona’s Ruta de Cócteles 2013 will be held from the 12th until the 29th September. One highlight of the event is the cocktail competition which will be held on the 26th September at 7pm on the Los Cristianos’ harbour promenade. The price of the cocktails have slightly increased this year to five euros and non-alchoholic versions to four euros.

Miss and Mister Costa Adeje

TENERIFE and the other Canary Islands are relishing the prospect of an exceptional wine-grape harvest this year. The uplifting mood is even luring some workers from the never-ending dole queues to the vineyard. Traditionally, vineyards in the Atlantic archipelago off Africa are the first to be harvested in Spain. And this year it is felt that large, high-quality

crops will be yielded, with five of the six big names looking forward to bigger volumes than in 2012. Canary Island vineyards are, collectively, said to be predicting a crop of about six million kilos - an astonishing improvement of 33% from last year. That has opened the eyes of those on the dole who really do want to be employed again. And in Spain, with unemployment running higher than 26%, it could prove to be a huge bonus. Domingo Martin Cruz, head of the Bodegas

Marba vineyard, in the La Laguna town of Tejina, said some locals were replacing immigrants for the harvest. “This year, there are already fewer immigrants in the fields,” he added. “Local people are taking up the habit again for financial reasons more than anything.” Alejandro Garcia Oliva, a 45-year-old jobless man from the nearby village of Tacoronte, worked for 15 years as a chef in a pastry shop. But he was made redundant two years ago, and Alejandro said: “This is not my thing,

but at least it is work in the open air. “I have plans to open a pastry shop with traditional desserts, but for now this is all there is.” Fellow vineyard worker Mohammed Laamech, 24, arrived in Tenerife from Morocco nine years ago on a small boat. He was trained in agriculture at the centre for minors, where he was installed on arrival, and has been working the fields since 2005. “I would like to do something else, but for now I am pretty happy here,” he said.

Old-timers could die a couple of months early Today, (Friday) the Miss and Mister Costa Adeje competition takes place at Faro Chill Art at 11pm. The municipality of Adeje through the Department of Tourism headed-up by Rafael Dolado Garcia, is inviting the public to attend the event. There are 24 participants from the municipality of Adeje, 14 girls and 10 boys aged 18 to 27 years old. There will be events during the day but the finale to the competition begins at 11pm. The winners of this beauty pageant will be passed directly to the International Mister and Miss World Tenerife which will be held in the municipality of Guía de Isora on the 13th and 14th September.

FOR the first time ever, people are not expected to live as long in Spain - but it’s hardly worth them worrying over it!

Residents in Spain normally live longer than just about any other country, and life expectancy is higher than

the European average by over two years. But last year’s figures of 79.16 years for men (79 years, eight weeks and two days) and 84.97 years for women (85 years less 11 days) have fallen to 79.01 years for men (79 years and four days) and 84.72 years for women (84 years, eight months and three weeks). Spain’s golden oldies are not likely to be wor-

ried into an early grave because the National Statistics Institute (INE) has knocked only a couple of months of their longevity. The lifespan of both men and women still remain above the average for the EU’s 27 member States. And Spain has one of the highest percentages of natives aged 100 or over. The INE believes that added money worries,

stress and unemployment, together with pension and healthcare funding cuts, are leading to a lesser quality of mental and physical health all round. Old-timers could die a couple of months early FOR the first time ever, people are not expected to live as long in Spain - but it’s hardly worth them worrying over it! Residents in Spain normally live longer than just about any other country, and life expectancy is higher than the European average by over two years. But last year’s figures of 79.16 years for men (79 years, eight weeks and two days) and 84.97 years for women (85 years less 11 days) have fallen to 79.01 years for men (79 years and four days) and 84.72 years for women (84 years, eight months and three weeks). Kids of seven out of puff! KIDS from Northern Ireland, and children of Indian origin, are among the least physically-active of all sevenyear-olds. That’s one of the interesting statistics to emerge from a study published in the online journal BMJ Open, But the most fascinating fact to be uncovered by experts from the University College London’s Institute of Child Health, who conducted the research, is that 50% of all seven-yearolds do not get enough exercise - with girls far less active than boys. True, 51% of that age group in the UK achieve the recommended hour of exercise every day. That breaks down to just 38% of girls hitting the target, compared with the boys’ 62%. Half of this age group

is also sedentary for an average of nearly 6½ hours or more every day. The researchers examined data for 6,497 children, who wore an accelerometer, attached to an elastic belt round their waist, to measure exercise levels. It was removed only at bathtime, or when the kids went to bed. In total, the experts were able to record 36,309 days of data based on the children wearing the accelerometer for at least 10 hours a day over the course of a week. Girls were more sedentary and less active than boys, while only 33% of children of Bangladeshi origin met the recommended daily exercise minimum. Among the four UK countries, children in Northern Ireland were the least active.

Going bananas

Morrisons is to acquire its first banana ripening site in Boston, Lincolnshire so it can control better the quality of Britain’s most popular fruit.

The acquisition will allow Morrisons to offer improved quality and consistency, as well as taking greater control over the bananas’ maturity. Customers tastes vary considerably with some preferring to buy their bananas with a tinge of green in order to ripen them at home, while others want more yellow, mature bananas that are sweeter and can be eaten straight away. Controlling the process will allow Morrisons to ripen the fruit

slower, meaning it is sweeter and lasts longer in the home. Morrisons will continue its tradition of working closely with growers by sourcing a larger number of its bananas directly from dedicated growers. These green, or unripened, bananas will now be ripened at the in house facility rather than via a third party. Bananas are one of the top-selling items at supermarkets in the UK and the move to acquire the facility from Del Monte will give Morrisons a direct, secure supply, achieve a cost saving and the ability to improve the consistency of the quality of its bananas in store. The acquisition is a joint venture with Global Pacific, a well established trading partner of Morrisons, whose ex-

pertise in exotic fruits will ensure the operation is a success. The 58,000 square foot factory is nine years old and was operated by Del Monte until November 2011, when it ceased operation. The opening of the former Del Monte site in Boston will create up to 80 new jobs in the area, when the site becomes operational in the autumn. Global Pacific will run the site on behalf of Morrisons. Dalton Philips, Chief Executive of Morrisons, said: “Bananas are the most popular fruit in the UK so it makes sense for Morrisons to apply its unique approach to food production to simplify the supply chain, cut out costs and improve quality. Adding this ripening factory to our business means we will be able to

mature bananas more precisely to our customers different needs.” Chris Kilvington, CEO of Global Pacific, said: “We are delighted to be entering into this exciting partnership with Morrisons, and look forward to the opportunity to set up and run the site on their behalf.” Morrisons is the only supermarket to own manufacturing sites including abattoirs, bakeries, produce packing, a fish factory and a flower factory - where almost a quarter of the food it sells is produced. The acquisition of this banana facility is the sixth addition to Morrisons’ manufacturing business since 2010, following on from meat factories in Deeside and Winsford, a produce site in Worsley, FlowerWorld in Derby and the Grimsby fish factory.

The only way is up for One Direction addicts UP to 70,000 One Direction fans packed into London’s Leicester Square to get a glimpse of the world’s biggest boy band on Tuesday.

Some had waited hours, even days, to see the five-strong group before the premiere of their behind-the-scenes film, This Is Us. Harry, Zayn, Liam, Louis, and Niall spent hours signing autographs for hysterical, screaming, teenage girls, and those slightly older. Sabrina, 25, said: “They’re nice to the fans. The music is really catchy and you can have a laugh with them, unlike JLS or Boyzone, who are all so serious.” She added: “I wanted

to see the boys and see their big night in action.” In fact, for 4,000 lucky wristband-holders it was the night of their life as they squeezed into specially-built pens.

23rd August - 29th August 2013

And hundreds more crowded around the square’s perimeter hoping or just a peek of the band, who have taken Britain and America by storm.. Music blasted out from outside the

Empire cinema in the run-up to their arrival, while film and record company executives attempted to control the mass - and the media congregation, who gathered to pho-

tograph and interview the first boy band to make a billion dollars (£700 million). The band’s PR team went to great lengths to keep the whereabouts of the boys a top secret.

Press accredited to cover the film’s release were given interview location addresses at the last minute to avoid hundreds of fans turning up. The group, third in 2010’s X Factor, now have a huge global following, selling 30 million records. And they even beat The Beatles to become the first UK group to go straight to No1 in the US charts with their debut single. Proof of One Direction’s attraction there is that their American stadium tour is outselling the 2012 tours of Madonna and Lady Gaga. Needless to say, mentor Simon Cowell, who has them signed to his Syco label, was at the premier to see his boys start to rake in another fortune - this time on screen!

Prisoners allowed to gather insurance info legitimately IT beggars belief! Prisoners in two English jails are being paid to gather insurance details from the public at call centres set up inside the prisons.

Inmates are working as call-centre operatives at HMP Oakwood in Wolverhampton and Staffordshire’s women’s jail HMP Drake Hall. They carry out market research for insurance companies as part of a scheme which, officials claim, prepares them to return to work after their release. Without revealing they are in jail, the cons read from a script which, reports suggest, include asking possible customers their names and postcodes. The Government denied claims they could inquire about the total value of homeowners possessions and any items that were particularly valuable. Sources also made clear the workers do not have access to the “full address details” of ordinary citizens. The cold callers work from secure computers with no internet access, and they are not allowed a pen to prevent them recording any private details. A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: “Prisoners placed in call centres are riskassessed, and their work is subject to stringent

To have and to holiday In sickness and in health, for better or for worse, ‘til death do us part, it appears nothing can tear a couple apart... except perhaps a holiday, according to a recent study for Post Office Travel Essentials. security measures, with calls supervised and recorded. “At no point can they ask the value of items, record data outside of the secure systems or deviate from a carefullyworded script. “These small pilots are being carefully monitored and would be rolled out only if deemed to be successful.” The spokesman added: “It is crucial that offenders do not sit idle in their cells. “Ensuring prisoners learn new skills through work opportunities makes them more employable in the future. “That means a lower risk of reoffending, lower crime and fewer victims.” Security firm G4S, which runs men’s prison Oakwood privately, and also a call centre there in partnership with businesses, stresses the whole operation is entirely safe.

“All the prisoners are carefully securitychecked and interviewed before working in the centre,” said a spokesman. “Calls are made remotely by computer, and every conversation is closely monitored by supervisors. “No information from the calls is stored, and there is no way any personal information can be used for any criminal purposes.” But critics believe the scheme could put customers are risk. Peter Cuthbertson, of the Centre for Crime Prevention told The Sun: “Trusting criminals with people’s financial details is incredibly naive. “Burglars will know who to target when they are released.” The MOJ actually announced plans last year to pay prisoners to work in call centres to enable them to learn new skills.

Over the last year, UK celebrities from Joanna Lumley to Cheryl Cole have proved mecations are the musthave trip, while new Post Office research shows that over 3.6 million of us prefer to holiday alone. Forget 20-something backpackers leading the charge. When it comes to travelling abroad, the older generation is far more likely to go it alone with over a fifth (21 per cent) of forty and fiftysomethings doing so.

In fact, this older age group is 50 per cent more likely to fly solo than those aged 25-35. The number of UK males who travel by themselves is five per cent higher than their female counterparts, with one in five men preferring to holiday alone compared to 13 per cent of women. The me-cation isn’t for everybody though with one in eight (13 per cent) preferring to go on holiday with large groups of likeminded people. However for 13 per cent, me-time is so important they prefer to jet off leaving even their families at home. Adventurous travellers are most likely to come from London or York, with sixteen per cent from both cities going solo compared to fourteen per cent of Cardiff’s inhabitants and one in 10 Edinburgh citizens. Paul Havenhand, Head of Travel at the

Post Office, said: “It’s interesting to see that older age groups are more likely to travel alone and it’s for this reason we’re making every effort to understand the changing needs of our customers. “Whether you are travelling solo or not, it is important that you take sufficient travel money and the correct type of travel insurance to make sure you are fully covered for your trip. For many it seems travelling alone also removes some of the holiday hassle. We’re advocates of making our customers’ holidays as hassle free as possible with a onestop shop for all the travel essentials.” Over 70 different currencies can be preordered at over 11,500 Post Office branches or online for next day branch or home delivery – so getting away is never a problem. Euros are available on demand in more than 10,000 Post Office branches, while the most popular other currencies are available on demand in 1,600 branches. Instant Travel Insurance is available online, by phone or in branch, and Post Office is the only official provider of Passport Check and Send services.

Podencos find Live Arico news a perfect home Fish and chips - a no-brainer A FEW weeks ago, we told you about Tenerife residents Linsey Sloan and Lorraine Mckeon taking on the Tough Mudder Challenge. It’s a 12-mile assault course, held at various locations around the world. It’s happening in Scotland tomorrow (Saturday) - and they’re going for it. This brutal event is not about winning but merely finishing, And they’re doing it all for us. So what can us weaklings do? Well, we can get down to the Palms Chippy, near Hotel Las Palmeras, Las Americas, between 4-9pm, when there will be 10% discount off your bill for the best fish and chips on the Island. Half the takings will be added to the Tough Mudder sponsorship pot, and you will be entered into a draw to win a 60-euro voucher. It’s a no-brainer: the girls put themselves through hell and we get to eat fish and chips! Hope to see you there. Oh, and good luck girls. We will be routing for you! We have done it We have paid off the debt. Thank you all so much for your continued help and support. Just over a year ago, Live Arico’s new committee inherited debts amounting to 18,222 euros. It was morally correct to pay the vets and feed suppliers who helped Live Arico when they were struggling financially. They are our heroes, who continued to support us when we were struggling financially out of care and concern for the animals. We are happy and relieved to have paid back in full the debt which the previous association (Live Arico) had built up over the years. We are confident that the association now operates under a more professionally-run system, and that we can go forward and help many more animals. Although it has been frustrating, repaying debts when we could all see the money could be spent on current issues.

Page 18

But you, our supporters, have enabled us, not only to repay them, but also to supply proactive help to many organisations, welfare groups, foster carers and individuals, who have worked in the animal welfare field on the Island over this past year. The future is positive and with your help, Live Arico will be adding to the health and education programmes, like neutering, micro-chipping and vaccinating, already under way, that can make a real change in the future. Thank you all so much for your continued support. The picture shows the additional help Live Arico have been able to provide through your loyalty. Our Autumn events Next Sunday (1st Sept), we will be at Blue Luna in Los Cristianos from 2-6pm with “Spanglish” the order of the day. English tapas, sangria, and drinks promotions are available throughout the afternoon, with entertainment from Alfie B, Kerry Railton plus more to be confirmed. Join us for a nice afternoon out. On Saturday, 28th Sept, from 8pm, we are back on the Top Square, Golf del Sur, for our threemonthly fund-raising spectacular. Sunday, 6th October sees us back at Horse Riding Adventures, Aldea Blanca, for Katie’s BBQ No2, which coincides with a show-jumping competition. Details to follow, On Saturday, 19th Oct, we will be having a bit of a do. Get your best togs out for our black-tie and posh-frock fund-raiser at Vivo, Las Americas, from 7pm. Be entertained by Bitter and Twisted, while enjoying a twocourse meal with wine, beer and soft drinks at the table. Later, chill out on the terrace with Marc Craig and maybe some special guests. Tickets are 25 euros, so call Sue on 629 388 102 as they are going fast already. The dress code is, of course, optional - come as you please - but we needed an excuse to dress up for a change.

MANY of our dogs at the refuge are sent to Germany for re homing because the bigger animals have a better chance of finding families there.

We have over 60 Canarian Podencos, which are used here for hunting. But many are just dumped in awful conditions once their hunting days are finished. These dogs are particularly hard to rehome, but here are two very happy Podencos, who now live in Stralsund Germany with their new owners. People are often worried about the breed, but they make very loyal pets. Marion, Gonzalez, who runs Accion del Sol, is always looking for people who travel to Germany with Condor, Air Berlin or Tui Fly and would like to help the dogs. It doesn’t cost anything except a little bit of your time at the airport while Accion staff check the dogs in. The reservation will be made and paid by the charity. You will be met by staff from Aktiontier, the giant German charity which sponsors our refuge. They will then transport the dogs to their destination. If you are travelling to Germany and would like to help, please call

the refuge on 922 778 630. We are still very busy with our children’s educational programme, working hard to change their minds regarding

animal welfare in the hope of making our Island a better place for them. Next week sees the arrival of a group of German students, who will

spend a week working with the dogs in all areas. These youngsters are all hoping to have a career working with animals, so this experience should prove invaluable to them. Please remember, with the high summer temperatures we are experiencing, to keep your pet safe by ensuring they have plenty of shade and cool water. A frozen cool-box ice block in the bucket of water will keep it cooler for a while longer, or add a handful of ice cubes. And please avoid walking your dog on the hot pavements in the heat of the day. Even more important, avoid leaving your dog in a hot car because even with the windows open, your dog can overheat quickly. Accion del Sol is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological park with the windmills. The refuge is open Monday-Friday, between 3-6pm, so do pop in for a visit, especially if you would like to take a dog or two for a walk. If you would like to assist the refuge in any way, please call 922 778 630 for more information.

Dads dancing Dads across the country have been named the most embarrassing parent on holiday, with twice as many British kids saying their dad is more of an embarrassment than their mum, according to a recent survey.

Disney Planes could inspire a generation of high-fliers

Watching Disney’s new animation ‘Planes’, in cinemas now, is sure to inspire cinema-goers to take to the air, but it seems many youngsters already find flying inspirational.

Findings from British Airways found that working for an airline is still one of the dream jobs for children when they grow up. Independent research (poll of 650 children aged 6-12 years) revealed that being a footballer is the number one goal for boys, along with being a pilot, and of course a superhero! Meanwhile, girls hope to become teachers, vets and medical staff when they grow up. Boys Top Jobs (in order): Footballer, Pilot, Superhero, Policeman, Teacher Girls Top Jobs (in order): Teacher, vet, nurse/doctor, air stewardess, popstar Some of the more unusual jobs that children nominated were: a Formula One driver, a shark fisherman, an inventor, a monster truck driver, a pirate, a princess and very specifically – a tree house builder! The findings also show

Page 20

regional differences; children in London and Wales grow up wanting to be pilots, kids in Northern Ireland aspire to be Superheroes, youngsters from the South West hope to be teachers, children in the North West aspire to be footballers and Scottish kids hope to be vets. As official partner of Disney’s ‘Planes’ the airline has renamed an aircraft ‘Bulldog’ after the British aircraft in the film, voiced by John Cleese. The film will be shown on board flights from September and promises to be one of the most popular family films on board this year. Abigail Comber, British Airways head of marketing, said: “It’s great to see that working for an airline is as popular today as it ever was – ranking in the top five jobs for boys. However, with more female pilots at British Airways than ever before, we were surprised to see this wasn’t more popular with girls. Nonetheless, I’m sure Planes will help inspire the British Airways pilots and cabin crew of the future!” British Airways has long supported British film and has been the official airline partner of BAFTA since 2010. Skyscanner asked 1000 under-16s about their holiday experiences with their parents and revealed dodgy ‘dad dancing’ as the most cringe-worthy moment for children, with 22% of the vote. In a close second, one in five red

faced kids say their dad doesn’t act his age on holiday and 19% claim he tries to act ‘cool’, only to fail miserably. Although not quite as bad as dads, mums still manage to mortify their kids abroad, with 14% of youngsters saying mum kissing dad in public embarrasses them the most. Bad dance moves also seem to be a shared trait, with 13% of kids left squirming with embarrassment at the sight of mum on the dance floor. The survey also pinpoints the age at which British kids find their parents most embarrassing. The results reveal that just 30% are embarrassed by their mum and dad

aged seven, with their humiliation gradually increasing from the early teens and peaking at the age of 14. Almost two-thirds (60%) of 14 year olds claim that their parents ‘cramp their style’ by treating them like a younger child. Interestingly girls are most embarrassed by their fathers, while boys voted overwhelmingly in favour of their mums. The north and south divide across England proves to be as strong as ever, with northern dads and southern mothers named the most embarrassing. Dads from Yorkshire and Humberside have been voted the worst for not acting their

ages, whilst South East mums are the worst for public displays of affection on holiday. Dad’s most embarrassing holiday habits 1. Bad dancing 22% 2. Doesn’t act his age 21% 3. FUNNY, FORGOTTEN OBJECTS ON PLANES

A wedding dress, a glass eye and a sandbag are just part of the varied list of forgotten objects found in aircraft every year, according to research conducted by Skyscanner. And amazingly people leave their passports onboard. A total of 700 cabin crew responded to a questionnaire asking what are the most amazing objects that a passenger has left on a

plane? Frogs, turtles and parrots are just a selection of the animals left onboard. Dentures, prosthetic legs, lingerie, a bag of onions and even a glass eye are also part of the colourful and fun objects left! How can people forget these things, even their own pets? Other curios have been found by chance an egg - only, no box-, a bag of sand.

Even when it comes to travel essentials, passengers forgetful. Almost a quarter of the crew surveyed (24%) found unclaimed passports on board, 23% mobile phones and 21% books. Angel Guirado, Marketing Manager for Spain Skyscanner said: “The fact that 24% of respondents have found passports in airplanes is quite striking, as it is essential to travel.

The Burrowers: Animals underground BBC2, 21.00

Chris Packham continues his underground journey investigating the world of some of the UK’s most iconic burrowing animals. Filmmakers and scientists cannot investigate animal behaviour inside wild burrows without disturbing them so The Burrowers’ team found ingenious ways to film this secret world by recreating full-scale replicas. It’s now spring in the burrows and the new babies are having to grow up fast. The seven orphan badgers are learning to communicate with each other, young rabbits must take their first steps outside, and young water voles their first swim. Chris also meets the most elusive burrower of them all - an animal which almost never comes above ground - the mole. He reveals the moles’ survival techniques, its method of burrowing and the food it eats. Finally, the team unveils a science first: the excavation of a massive abandoned wild rabbit warren...

Formula One: Belgian Grand Prix Qualifying BBC1, 12.10

Suzi Perry presents live coverage of qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, one of the most iconic venues on the F1 calendar. Last year it was McLaren’s Jenson Button who tamed the track, racing to pole position. He was then equally as dominant in the race, taking the chequered flag ahead of eventual 2012 champion Sebastian Vettel. The German again tops the standings this season, but there is all to play for with nine races remaining.

The Downing Street Years. Best of Enemies. Part two of the award-winning fourpart documentary series first broadcast in 1993, examining Margaret Thatcher's eleven years as Prime Minister. In her second term in office after victory in 1983, Mrs Thatcher's position seemed impregnable. Her conduct of the Falkland's war was popular, she had trounced Arthur Scargill and the striking miners, and had survived the bombing by the IRA of the Grand Hotel in Brighton. But all was not well: Cabinet Secretary Robert Armstrong and ex Chancellor Nigel Lawson are amongst those who recall the emnity between the Prime Minister and her Defence Secretary Michael Heseltine. Thatcher thought of him as 'over-poweringly ambitious and self-centred', and his handling of the Westland affair in 1986 only served to increase illfeeling between the two, which reached its height with his challenge to her leadership in 1990.

East Sussex. Chefs Tony Singh and Cyrus Todiwala want to transform the way British dishes are cooked at home. The two old friends believe Britain has some of the best produce in the world but think we are missing a trick when it comes to cooking with spices. Tony and Cyrus visit East Sussex. In Hastings, they spice up some locally caught fish - dover sole with lime and ginger - before taking on traditional fish and chips, making a spicy marinade for their cod fillets. They then travel inland and visit a farmer who breeds rare middle white pigs. After slow-cooking pulled pork with cinnamon and cloves, Tony and Cyrus demonstrate the dazzling effect cinnamon and chilli powder can have on vanilla ice cream. Spices can also give a whole new dimension to leftovers, a delicious example being bread and butter pudding with orange and cardamom. World Series - Stockholm. Sonali Shah presents the seventh leg of the ITU World Triathlon Series from Stockholm, the final event before September's grand final in London. In the last race, Great Britain's defending world champion Jonny Brownlee beat his brother Alistair into second place in a thrilling sprint finish. The Yorkshire siblings can still catch overall leader Javier Gomez of Spain, with only the best four World Series results per athlete and the grand final counting towards the final standings. There are also highlights of the women's event. Anne Haug of Germany went into the race leading the standings ahead of Great Britain's Jodie Stimpson in second, and Non Stanford in fourth.

Stand by Me Channel 5, 15:55

Stephen King's bittersweet tale of a gang of four 12-year-old boys growing up in Oregon in the 1950s made stars of young actors River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Kiefer Sutherland and Wil Wheaton. Their search through the countryside around their hometown for the body of a missing teenager, thought to have been killed by a train, is told in flashback years afterwards by one of the boys, who is now a writer.

What remains BBC1, 21.00

When Michael and Vidya move into their new flat in Coulthard Street to prepare for the arrival of their first baby, a leak dripping through the ceiling sets off a chain of events that leads them to a shocking discovery. According to their new neighbours no one has lived in the top flat for years, but when Michael breaks in not all is as it seems. Beneath the dust the discarded shopping sits rotting on the kitchen sideboard. Realising the leak is coming from the loft, the couple stumble across a decomposed body in the eaves. Is it the resident of flat 5? Melissa had disappeared not long after Kieron moved into the ground floor flat, newly divorced and with a teenage son who visits every Tuesday. Elaine in flat 3 hadn’t seen her since a Christmas party two years before, but when her partner Peggy fails to return home the death of her neighbour is the least of her problems. Joe, a teacher, knew Melissa the longest and her mother before her; not that he had much time for her – or any of his neighbours for that matter. With a week left until retirement Detective Inspector Len Harper begins to question Melissa’s neighbours. Who was she and why did no one notice she’d disappeared? Len determines to uncover their secrets and refuses to let the victim disappear without trace, but when his police colleagues are reluctant to help, Len doubles his efforts. Len Harper is played by David Threlfall, Vidya Khan is played by Amber Rose Revah, Michael Jenson is played by Russell Tovey, Joe Sellers is played by David Bamber, Kieron Moss is played by Steven Mackintosh, Elaine Markham is played by Indira Varma, Liz Fletcher is played by Denise Gough, Patricia is played by Claudie Blakley, Melissa Young played by Jessica Gunning, Peggy Scott is played by Victoria Hamilton, DC Alice Yapp is played by Lisa Millett and Adam Moss is played by Alexander Arnold.

This week, in episode three, we tell the extraordinary tale of a convicted fraudster who went on a spending spree across England using a stolen cheque book. His victims were English publicans from East Anglia to the West Country who accepted his cheques for their fine food and generous rounds of drinks, only to be stung as the cheque bounced a few days later. But the fraudster’s luck finally ran out in Devon where one of his landlord victims decided to turn super sleuth to track him down. In Southend on Sea, brother and sister David and Charlotte were counting the takings in their fish and chip shop, when they were forced to confront an armed intruder wielding a chisel. The situation was made more serious as David suffers from haemophilia. A cut could be fatal. Knowing this, Charlotte bravely intervened and together the brother and sister managed to pin down the robber. It was only after they called the police they realised that David had sustained a cut to the head. But physically fighting back is always full of risk. And there are numerous and often better ways you can play your part in helping the police, which Fightback Britain reveals. Adrian investigates how you can catch a thief from the comfort of your own home using ‘Internet Eyes’ – a system that allows subscribers to watch live CCTV feeds on behalf of shopkeepers, and if you spot a thief you will be given a tenner. Adrian enjoys spotting a shoplifter in the act of stealing a magazine but goes on to question whether such systems are a bit of a snooper’s charter? Advances in technology mean there are all sorts of smart cameras that allow us to catch people in the act. Louise Gilles’s uncle Malcolm suffers from MS and started getting additional help around the house from neighbour Lisa. But her suspicions were raised when her uncle started running out of his pension money and when she found a large receipt for women’s clothes. Louise planted a spy camera in Malcolm’s sitting room facing a £20 note on the mantle piece to see what might happen the next time Lisa decided to make a visit. And finally we meet criminals who were foiled by their own stupidity. When a farmer faced ruin after having his equipment stolen, he decided to search for his items online, only to see his belongings up for sale by a local living just down the road.

Tony and Cyrus begin their trip to Wales in the Cothi Valley in Carmarthenshire where they make goats' cheese from the milk of animals feeding on a yearly cycle of wildflowers, herbs and berries. Tony bakes a golden goats' cheese, red onion and caraway seed tart, served with refreshing spiced pickled onions, spiked with chilli flakes, lime juice and pomegranate molasses. Next they head for Bridgend and a family run toffee business that has been going for over 100 years. Tony slips a couple of handfuls of whole aniseeds into a pan of bonfire toffee, with the sweet shop's young customers giving the aniseed-flavoured toffee a definite thumbs up.

London is burning. German bombs are decimating British homes and the dead lie in heaps. But this Blitz has nothing to do with World War II. This little-known story of a terror bombing campaign on the capital took place during the First World War. For 18 months the carnage was delivered by a machine straight from the pages of science fiction.

Top Boy Channel 4, 22:55

But Dushane's former right hand man Sully is now a potentially dangerous rival with a new partnerin-crime, violent and volatile Mike. Adrian Chiles introduces live coverage of the UEFA Champions League play-off round second-leg tie between Arsenal and Fenerbahce. A place in the group stage is at stake for the Gunners as they face their Turkish opponents at the Emirates a week after the first leg in Istanbul. Former Arsenal favourites Lee Dixon and Ian Wright join Adrian and Gareth Southgate in the studio as Arsene Wenger’s side bid to reach the group stage for the 16th successive season. Fenerbahce were handed a two-year ban from European football in June following allegations of match-fixing but they were later reinstated pending an appeal. Familiar faces in their squad include former Chelsea player Raul Meireles, Liverpool forward Dirk Kuyt and ex-Everton stalwart Joseph Yobo, while the Gunners might be hoping to show off some new signings after a summer of speculation linking them with high-profile players.

After four weeks of intense competition eight exceptional celebrity cooks are left to fight for their place in the semifinals as they try to impress judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace by cooking just one showstopping dish in one and a half hours. Although it may seem like a simple task, a mistake in choice of dish or flavour combination could mean the end. They have to demonstrate a clear knowledge of their ingredients and showcase some of the skills they've learnt throughout the competition so far, but at the end of this challenge, two more celebrities will be going home. Then, the six who have made the grade take a trip back in time when they must cater for the soldiers in the War of the Roses. One hundred members of a battle reenactment society stage a battle in the grounds of historic Warwick Castle. Working in two teams they must create mouth-watering meals from a selection of ingredients that would have been available in medieval times including rabbit, pike and quinces.

ITV have commissioned Wall to Wall’s (a Shed Media company) tearjerking factual series, Long Lost Family for a fourth series. The commission follows the show’s strongest launch to date – 5.6 million viewers, based on consolidated overnights. The series, which has just finished its third run, averaged a live overnight audience of 5.2 million viewers/a 24% share of viewing, making it the highest rating series yet. Since its launch, Long Lost Family has consistently won its prime time weekday 9pm slot. The first series averaged a consolidated audience of 5 millions viewers, series two averaging 5.15 million and series three has leaped to an average audience of 5.9 million so far, based on consolidated data. Richard Klein, Director of Factual at ITV, said: “Long Lost Family has that rare quality of speaking to everyone and every family. Everybody has complicated families and Long Lost Family shows how important the family is in the hearts of the British people.” Jo Clinton-Davis, Controller of Factual at ITV, said: “Long Lost Family has captured and grown in the popular imagination. Each story is deeply personal yet has a universality with which we can all identify. Entertainment

THERE have been all kinds of trends over the last few years regarding the entertainment scene. Some have been nothing more than fads which have fizzled out as quickly as they’ve started, but others have stuck and become popular. There has been a noticeable increase in duos working in Tenerife over the last six months, with collaborations being made between existing solo artistes and new duos arriving. However, there are established duos on the Island who have always been in work, always delivering first-class entertainment. Acts like Kracka, Tony and Phil, have been working together in Tenerife since 1995, and they have had residencies in all the top bars. Bars like Harlequins, Princess Di´s, Blaydon Races and The Stadium have seen the success of Kracka. But if you would like to see them now, you will find them at Bar 39 in Los Cristianos six nights a week. All this seems a far cry from when these two talented musicians were touring the UK holiday parks as The Fearless Brothers. That was an experience they must be glad about because you have to be a little fearless to take on some of our audiences here in Tenerife. You can also find

www.canarianweekly.com

Two can play that game Kracka Tenerife on Facebook, where you can keep up to date with Tony and Phil. Also on the scene for a long time here are the musical duo Innuendo. Les and Donna have been together both as life partners and stage partners for some time now and, again, have always been in work. They have always taken care to meet and get to know their audience, making friends and creating return custom wherever they have been. The couple were also the first to broadcast their nightly shows live to the internet via their website www.innuendotenerife.com - even giving the watching audience on the worldwide web a chance to buy the artiste a drink. All good as far as I am concerned. Innuendo are now performing at The Martini Bar in Fanabe, above the Megabowl. Visit their website for all social media links and to watch online every night. Those of you who have been involved in the entertainment scene for some time will know that there has not really been duos here touring the circuit. Yet there have

been quite a few Abba tributes always floating around, and who can forget the mighty BWB. Mikey Mike, who used to be with BWB as a trio and a duo, is a pioneer of the collaborative power of two voices together on stage. He, along with those he worked with - I.S Marlow and many more - have always produced an amazing sound and some fabulous arrangements to classic songs. This is what makes the name Mikey Mike spring to mind when the question is posed: “Who do you think is the best male singer on the Island?” It all comes to this: there have always been resident duos, but this year has seen a rise in touring duos like Phenomenon. Ollie and Luke, formed earlier this year, have worked really hard at polishing their act - and it has paid off in bucketloads. The last time I spoke with Ollie and Luke, they were over the moon at the interest in Phenomenon. Now, they are having to turn work away because they just don’t have the slots available. Wherever they play, the boys always receive fine reviews from comperes, bar owners and customers. This is all really good news for the circuit as it seems to be dragging itself back to its former glory, with the duos leading the way. To work together with another artiste, one has to be a “real singer” or a “real musician“ and

not someone who has learned the words to 20 songs and decided to become an entertainer after 30 years of working in an office, or being behind the wheel of a truck singing along to Johnny Cash. Two voices together, delivered well, takes musical understanding, the ability to blend and harmonise and, that allimportant factor - talent! Generally, the “karaoke-born” artiste has no musical knowledge and lacks the ability to harmonise with another voice. It has to be said that not all singers emerging from the karaoke genre fit into this bracket. It has, over the years, produced some amazing talent on this circuit: some still treading the boards here and others who have spread their wings and are working within the industry around the world. It really is a different class of entertainment when two people, who completely understand their voices and music, sing together. There is nothing more pleasing to the ear than two human voices, male or female or a mix of both, singing in perfect harmony. It takes skill to be able to do it and is a talent that should be respected. I would like to write about all of the talented musical duos here in Tenerife - and the few I’ve mentioned are all first-class. And here are a few more to look out for: The Looney Tunes are

a male duo, with Freddy Kaye on keyboard and Dave Dean on guitar, both providing outstanding vocals. They can be seen in Shenanigans Bar, in Las Americas, every night. System X are a manand-wife duo who have worked together since they were young. They can boast 23 years as System X, covering music from all genres and delivered with the normal banter you would expect from a married couple performing on stage. They can be seen at The Corner Bar on Parque de la Paz, Tuesday to Thursday, and at the Sunningdale Resort on Golf del Sur on a Monday evening. Every fortnight on Saturday night you will find Dee and Darren performing at Royal Sunset Beach Club. There are so many more talented entertainers I would like to mention in this genre but, sadly, I’m running out of space. But maybe in the nottoo-distant future, I will cover some more duos.

WHATS NEW

TEMPO 2000, or T2K as they will become known, are a duo who are starting to tour the circuit here in Tenerife. Established Tenerife act Marlo has teamed up with Corey Tennant to form this fresh-sounding vocal duo. Actually, “formed” is maybe the wrong word here as Marlo and Corey worked together in the UK with this duo in the years before Marlo came to the Canary Islands. Well, they have reunited and, after speaking to both guys recently, they both agreed it’s as though they’ve never been apart. Both have just slipped back into the old routine, and the magic is still there. These guys will be snapped up quickly on the circuit. So a note to all compere and bar owners: get this show in your bar before it’s too late. Good luck lads, but I’m sure you will not need luck because your talent will be enough.

LEONARDOS have welcomed a new “member” to the entertainment’s team. Manager Steve Wynne has employed the services of a huge 80in TV, which is now situated on the terrace. It’s extremely eye-catching for passing trade and has already proved a big success, with the start of the football season packing the terrace to capacity for the weekend’s opening matches. The 14 screens inside didn’t miss out, either, because a full complement of football fans filled the bar, too, providing two environments to enjoy the match - under the sun or in a fully air-conditioned bar. Perfect. There is real variety at Leonardos, both day and night, the live entertainment programme starting at 8.30 every night with yours truly, followed by resident duo Cormack and McRae. Something very exciting is also happening, involving the manager Steve and Leonardos, and I will have more to tell you on that story in the next Leonardos issue. Watch this space!

Mortgages made easieR F I R S T-T I M E buyers in the UK will have been heartened by this week’s mortgage news.

They are more affordable now than at any time in the past 14 years, according to the Halifax. Monthly payments now account for 27% of a new borrower’s income in the second quarter of 2013, well below the average for the past 30 years. Lower house prices and reduced mortgage interest rates have been the main factors behind the improvement in affordability, says the Halifax. Craig McKinlay, the company’s mortgage director, said: “Substantial mortgage rate reductions and lower house prices have led to a significant improvement in affordability since the housing market peaked six years ago. “The Funding for

Page 38

Lending Scheme has helped lenders to cut mortgage rates, causing a further modest improvement in affordability over the past year, despite the modest house-price rises nationally.” But there remains a clear North-South divide when it comes to actually being able to afford a mortgage, says the Halifax. Mortgage payments are at their lowest in Northern Ireland, where they cost just 17% of incomes, compared more than doubt that figure in Greater London. But independent mortgage consultant Richard Ignatowicz put a damper on the claims, stressing: “We can’t just say mortgages are now more affordable than ever. It doesn’t mean much in isolation. “Borrowers need to be cautious about changes on the horizon. Will they still be able to afford a mortgage when the rate reverts to 5%? That’s the real question!”

Bag to the Future John Lewis has revealed the average cost of today’s school bag compared to the 1980s and 1960s.

Total cost of bag and school uniform comes in at £550.80, including smart phone Total cost of 1980’s school bag and school uniform amounts to £252.40 in today’s money Total cost of 1960’s school bag and school uniform amounts to £231.20 in today’s money The most expensive item in today’s school bag is the smart phone with an average cost of £362.10. However, stationery, text books, lunchboxes and calculators cost less in 2013 than in 1980 and 1960. Research released today by John Lewis reveals that for many children the cost of today’s school uniform, school bag and its contents amounts to £550.80. This compares to an average cost of £252.40 in the 1980s and £231.2o in the 1960s, in today’s money. The research commissioned by John Lewis looks at the top 10 items that were taken to school in each decade, adding their average costs in today’s money to the average cost of a school uniform and school bag from the 60s, 80s and today. Smart Kids The main difference between today’s school bag and those of yesteryear is the inclusion of gadgets, with almost half of all secondary school children (45%) taking a smart phone to school, and 35% carrying headphones. With the average price of a smart phone coming in at £362, this goes a long way towards explaining why today’s school bags are more valuable than they were 50 years ago. Tech it to School The 2013 school bag results show that children are also starting to take other popular gadgets with them to school, with 18% taking an MP3 player, 5% opting for a tablet or laptop and 2% carrying an eReader. This trend looks set to continue as eReaders

and tablets start to make their way into the classroom. Back to Basics The good news for parents is that in comparison to the 1960s and 1980s, the costs of school bag staples, including stationery and lunchboxes, have come down in price. When it comes to these essentials the 1980s was the most expensive decade to go back to school, with prices of text books, exercise books and lunchboxes all at their highest. The price of an exercise book is at its cheapest today, costing £1.80, vs £2 in the 1960s and £2.40 in the 1980s. The iconic calculator was also at its most expensive in the 1980s, costing £11.60 compared to £8.70 today. Matt Leeser, Head of Buying for Communications Technology at John Lewis, comments: “Whilst the good old fashioned exercise book and pencils have made it into the top 3 must-have school bag items for the last 50 years, there’s no shying away from the fact that technology is making its way into the school bag and classroom. Technology is evolving at such a rate that we predict in another 10 years’ time the top 10 school bag list will be unrecognisable as

today’s digital natives grow up and become parents themselves. In the run up to back-to-school we’re predicting that we’ll sell a computing device every two minutes during the two weeks over Bank Holiday. This year we’ve done our homework to make sure that we’re offering best valuefor-money on back-toschool items including tech, stationery and school uniforms so that parents don’t have to.” Leeser continues: “If you do want to invest in a laptop or tablet make sure you go into store to get advice on exactly what your children’s requirements are. It’s important you choose a product that is future proof.” Shopping Back-toSchool – John Lewis top tips: 1) Buy Early To avoid disappointment make sure you purchase things like new technology, school uniform and key stationery items as early as possible. 2) Check in with the School Before buying new technology, it’s important to double check with the school which devices they are allowed in the classroom and the preferred operating system being used by the school. There is no point buying your child

an iPad for educational reasons if the school uses Windows. Some schools also operate a no mobile policy in the classroom. 3) Label Everything Things are easily left on the bus, lost on playing fields, or mistakenly taken from coat pegs. Name tapes offer a choice of fonts and finishes, and can be discreetly sewn into clothing, bags and pencil cases. You can also purchase tags for electrical products. 4) Bulk Buy This idea might seem like a big task, as it’s an expensive business and it’s often the last thing your children want to do, but bulk buying uniform items all together means that you may only need to wash once a week. At John Lewis, standard UK delivery is free on all orders of £50 – this can come in handy if you’re buying new technology and uniform for more than one child. 5) Don’t Forget the Basics Whilst times have changed in some aspects of school life, children today couldn’t get by without some of the basics. For the first day of the new term, you’ll need to make sure your child has all the right stationery (again check with the school for the full list), lunchbox and sports bag. 6) Do your Homework Children often ask for the latest new technology craze or gadget so it’s important to decide which kit is better suited for recreational use at home or as a study aid. When buying a laptop for school, you need to gain expert advice on areas like memory and hard drive size. Our partners are trained in giving customers advice on all areas of technology and school requirements.

Glee’s buzzing

By David Hudgell Whilst browsing the internet this week as well as finding some gorgeous gardening blogs I noticed there is a large gardening show in Birmingham in September – ‘GLEE 2013’.

Over 500 garden suppliers will be plying their wares to sellers of garden products up and down the country from the 15th – 17th September, at the NEC Birmingham. Everything from Garden Care, Landscape & Garden Design, Nursery & Planteria, Garden Save seed from ornamental grasses and many other garden plants Summer prune wisteria, shortening long side shoots back to five or six leaves Deadhead roses, unless you want them to form autumn hips Trim lavender

Leisure, Home & Gift, Retail Services to Pets. This year Glee will still be a 3-day show, but with a Sunday opening so that more independent retailers are able to attend; innovation and new products are the watchwords of this year’s event. Unfortunately it’s for trade only, but I did see that one of there new exhibitors has a new

product called BeeMat. BeeMat is a ready seeded mat that contains mixed flower seeds selected to provide nectar and pollen for bees. It contains a mix of both annual, biennial and perennial species that will flower vigorously over an extended period including: - Common Knapweed - Greater Knapweed - Golden Rod

Chrysanthemeum mixes - Borage - Anise Hyssop - Californian Poppy - Verbena - Lady Phacelia - Viper’s Buglos Research shows that planting wild flowers makes a big difference to bees. The problem is stopping weeds without killing the flowers. BeeMat has been scientifically proven

to do just this. Use in spring and summer on flowerbeds, pots, troughs, orchards and allotments. It claims to be very easy to use. Just prepare the ground, lay the BeeMat and cover with 5 -10 cm sand or compost. Water occasionally to help germination. What’s it made of? BeeMat is made up of two layers of tissue paper with flower seeds

between them. When laid onto prepared soil and covered with a thin much layer of sand, clean soil or compost BeeMat will suppress weeds and encourage germination of flower seeds in the mat. An ideal present or ideal for small terraces here. More information and to purchase BeeMat is available at www.beemat.com

Gardening jobs for this week immediately after flowering to maintain its shape, but avoid cutting back too far into old wood Hoe weeds regularly to prevent seedlings establishing

Poached Eggs

The Poached egg plant as it’s called is an annual and flowers from spring until late summer. They’re easy to grow an ideal for bedding, borders, children, cottage Gardens, ground Cover and patios. It will attract hoverflies to your garden to beat the aphids. Bees also love this low, spreading carpet of fragrant golden and white blooms that will grace the front of the border, rockery or path edging. Best sown where they are to flower in spring or late summer/early autumn for over wintering. Sow 3mm (1/8in) deep in rows 30cm (12in) apart in well cultivated soil which has been raked. Thin out the seedlings to 10cm (4in) apart.

Trim conifer hedges, evergreen hedges and topiary Deadhead dahlias to encourage further blooms to form Cut down perennials past their prime Sow hardy annuals, like poached egg plant, for early flowers next year Harvest young marrows but leave some to fully ripen for storage and winter use Trim leaves from strawberries that have finished fruiting Plant out rooted strawberry runners into new beds Pick early varieties of apple as they ripen

Sow parsley in pots for winter and spring use Thin out heavy crops of plums to prevent branches snapping Hang wasp traps in fruit trees Pinch out the tops of outdoor tomatoes, as further flowers are unlikely to produce ripe fruits Pick fresh herbs to freeze in ice cubes for winter use, or to hang and dry to store in jars Feed tomatoes in growing bags and pots with a liquid highpotash fertiliser Take leaf cuttings from begonias, Cape primroses and African

Flower of the Year 2013: Nasturtium ‘Crimson Emperor’

Vibrant dark crimson blooms contrast beautifully with lush green semi-trailing foliage. A lax, spreading habit makes ‘Crimson Emperor’ ideal for planting as ground cover in borders or allowed to tumble over walls and fences. Available from Thompson & Morgan.

Cut down the leaves to stimulate new growth Order garlic ready for planting in autumn Water pot cyclamen saved from last year to start them back into growth Buy prepared hyacinth bulbs and plant as soon as possible so you get flowers for Christmas Plant pots of ‘Paper White’ narcissus for indoor displays Remove lower leaves from cordon-trained tomatoes up to the bottom truss, to let light

and air reach the fruits Top up water levels in pebble fountains and pools Order spring-flowering bulbs to plant this autumn Deadhead border plants, unless you want to collect their seeds Spray gladioli to prevent thrips damage to leaves and flowers Pick herbs and everlasting flowers for drying Buy or build compost bins to help recycle all your kitchen and garden waste Collect seeds and ripe seed pods from favourite flowers and vegetables

Parsley ‘Laura’ - Part of the Alan Titchmarsh Collection

Easy to grow an ideal for borders, containers, patios and window boxes. Available all year round, the herb has an intense flavour and is a kitchen favourite. As well as growing outdoors, Parsley ‘Laura’ can be grown on the windowsill all year round. Sow outdoors or indoors. Before sowing, prepare the ground by raking until it is fine and crumbly, removing any large stones. Make shallow channels (drills) in the soil 30cm (12”) apart. Sow thinly, 1cm (1/2”) deep in the drills, or sow into pots of free-draining compost. Lightly cover the seeds with soil, compost or vermiculite and place on the windowsill.

Honesty the Fizzy pop leads to best policy? equally feisty kids FIZZY drinks make children as young as five violent, withdrawn and distracted.

By Carl from Robot

WHEN I trained as a stylist, we were always told to ask as many questions about the client as possible.

Everything, from the time the client spends on her hair at home, to looking at her clothing to determine what style would match her lifestyle. We were always taught to check with the client on colour choices, and discuss the cut at lengths to make sure she left the salon happy. What I have found over the years is that there was one thing missed out of our training - and that was “honesty”. Yes, after discussing with the client the ins and outs of the appointment, we happily got on with our work. But I always felt that sometimes, doing what the client wanted left her leaving the salon with what to me was only half a service. As stylists, we can give an opinion to you, the client, but at the end of the day it’s your hair - you have to walk around with it, literally, on your head! But what if stylists were to be totally honest with you? You may think they were a little abrupt, but what would they have gained

Page 40

from being like this? To me, nothing but your satisfaction at the end of the appointment. If you’re being told you can’t have the colour you want, or that the style you’ve set your heart on won’t suit, please do one thing. No matter whose salon you are in, be it mine or another one, at least LISTEN! I have seen far too many upset new clients who have not listened to their stylist and have left the salon unsatisfied. Not because of a bad colour or cut, but what the client was asking for was not what is going to be the best for her. We train for years to do what we do, seeing thousands of

body-shapes and faceshapes, too. Your stylist should have a knack of knowing instantly what is needed to give you the image you’re looking for. Be guided by them and ask questions about what you’re being told. I always go overboard on my consultations, sometimes putting off clients from having done what they require, and this is for my benefit as well. I don’t want tears in the salon, especially not in mine, because your stylist should be looked upon as your honest friend. But if you don’t have confidence in them, then how are they going to give you the result you’re looking for?

New research suggests that boys and girls who had four soft drinks a day were more than twice as likely to get into fights, destroy possessions of others and physically attack people, compared with those who drank other beverages. The sugar-laden drinks were linked with moodiness and difficulty in concentrating. The girls were as bad as the boys - and the more soft drinks a child had, the worse his/her behaviour. Although the potential dangers of popular drinks have been researched deeply, this study is one of the first to look at kids so young. The US researchers said that limiting the number of colas, lemonades and other soft drinks given to a child - or even banning them all together - may improve behaviour. The Columbia University team in New York asked mothers of five-year-olds how often their children had fizzy drinks. The women also filled in a questionnaire about how their child had behaved in the previous two months. Almost half of the 3,000 boys and girls had at least one soft drink a day. One in 25 had four

or more, reports the Journal of Pediatrics. The children studied were part of a larger project involving “fragile families” those deemed to be at greater risk of breakup and poverty than normal. However, the link with aggression was “strong and consistent”, even when factors such as the number of sweets eaten, socioeconomic status, domestic violence and the mother’s mental health were taken into account. But researcher Shakira Suglia said she unable to prove that the soft drinks were making the children violent. For instance, it is possible that health problems which make children aggressive or moody could also create cravings for sugary drinks. However, she said that cutting down on consumption, or stopping it all together, might improve behaviour. If soft drinks are to blame, the problem could lie in their sugar content. A can of CocaCola contains almost nine teaspoons of sugar. Caffeine, found in many soft drinks, may also affect children’s behaviour. The soft drinks enjoyed by millions of Britons every day have been linked to a host of health problems, including heart attacks, diabetes, weight gain, brittle bones, pancreatic

and prostate cancer, muscle weakness and paralysis. Health and food campaign group Sustain wants a sugary drinks tax to be brought in, with the proceeds ploughed back into children’s health. Campaign Director Charlie Powell said: “This study adds to the overwhelming body of evidence that sugary drinks damage children’s health and well-being by contributing to dental diseases, obesity and bad behaviour.” Sarah Schenker, of the British Dietetic Association, said soft drinks were, nutritionally, very poor - and drinking them at the age of five could put a child on the slippery slope towards a lifetime of fast and processed foods. Dr Schenker, whose own children have never had a fizzy drink, recommends that kids are given milk or water. Fruit juice can also be drunk, but in small amounts only. The food industry stressed that the study had not proved the soft drinks were the cause of children’s problems and that a bad diet or lack of exercise could be to blame. Gavin Partington, the British Soft Drinks Association’s director-general, said: “Parents should be careful to make sure that their children have a balanced diet and plenty of physical activity.” Earlier this summer, obesity experts accused the food industry of devising a ‘master plan’ to fool people - and governments - into believing sugar-laden fizzy drinks were healthier than they are. The European Congress on Obesity heard evidence that industry-funded studies were more likely to conclude that soft drinks did not have a major role in obesity - even though separate analysis of similar data found the opposite.

Cancer survival? It’s all down to where you live!

By Val Sainsbury THE wide variation in the odds quoted of getting and surviving cancer across the UK has been highlighted by a leading cancer charity.

Cancer Research UK has launched a new tool that allows people to compare cancer statistics in their area with those in the rest of the country. It hopes the local data will help doctors and politicians tackle the specific problems in their patch. There is separate data for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In Scotland, the greater Glasgow area had the highest cancer mortality, while Shetland had the lowest. And mortality was much higher in Belfast than the rest of Northern Ireland. Merthyr Tydfil was one of the worst-performing parts of Wales, while Ceredigion had better cancer survival rates. Some of the posher areas in the south of England, such as Harrow, Richmond and Surrey, performed better than places further north, like Stoke, Hartlepool and Nottingham. Cities in the north of England have some of the lowest survival rates. A significant factor in the regional variation is differences in lifestyle, such as smoking, which, as you will all know, is linked to lung cancer. Kensington and Chelsea, East Sussex and Devon all had fewer than 35 cases of lung cancer per 100,000 people. That rate is more than double - in excess of 85 per 100,000, in cities such as Hull, Manchester and Liverpool. A similar website presented by Public Health England led Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to describe the differences in England as “shock-

ing”. Charlotte Williams, Executive Director of London Cancer, said: “The comparison tool means it’s easier to identify where we’re doing well, and where

we could do better, and how we could potentially learn from others. “This will pinpoint where we need to improve, in order to help ensure everyone gets

the best care possible.” Sara Hiom, director of patient engagement and early diagnosis at Cancer Research UK, said: “In the UK, we are privileged to have ac-

cess to valuable information about cancer diagnosis and treatments for different parts of the country. “We’ve created this website because we

hope it will allow policymakers and healthcare professionals to understand what’s going on in their area, and support local insight and decision-making.”

Painless drug is closer

A PIONEERING vaccine to bring relief to people crippled by rheumatoid arthritis is a step closer.

The news follows a breakthrough by scientists, who say the new vaccine could help thousands of people who suffer from the crippling pain of arthritis. Australian researchers have been given the go-ahead to work on a ground-breaking treatment which tackles the cause, rather than symptoms, of

23rd August - 29th August 2013

the agonising condition. Arthritis charities have hailed the vaccine’s “huge potential” to help an estimated 700,000 sufferers in the UK. Rheumatoid arthritis destroys people’s joints and is caused by the body’s immune system not working properly. Nearly one in three sufferers does not respond to existing treatments, or cannot tolerate them. Professor Ranjeny Thomas, from Australia’s University of Queensland, said his team’s pioneering focus

on the immune system could benefit millions of people. He added: “Our goal is to provide rheumatoid arthritis patients with a new, safe therapy for the management of their disease, with the possibility of prevention in the future.” The researchers have joined forces with major US pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson to take the vaccine closer to a Phase One clinical trial, when it will be tested on humans for the first time. It is more targeted than existing drugs, allowing suitable pa-

tients to be selected based on specific characteristics, leading to improved response rates. Jo Cumming, head of Helplines and Information at Arthritis Care, said: “This Australian project has huge potential if it reaches its aims.” Johnson & Johnson is best known for its baby-care products. Many arthritis sufferers are left with little or no relief from joint pain because the current anti-tumour drugs, known as anti-TNF (tumour necrosis factor), have limited effect.

A spokeswoman for Arthritis Research UK said a proliferation of effective new biological drugs had not provided respite for many sufferers. “Targeting specific patients early is one of our major goals,” she stressed. “This Australian research is in its very early stages, but we await the outcome with great interest.” The research project is further good news for sufferers after scientists at America’s Utah University found that a pill costing just 6p reduced joint pain by 51% in five days.

Style as well as substance is important for showstopping cakes.

Sales of decorations such as shimmer sugar and edible glitters are up by 173% at Waitrose - adding a touch of glitz and glamour to homemade sweet treats. Also proving popular are natural food colourings up 64% and cupcake decorations up 63%. Key store cupboard staples are being restocked with sales of flour up by 20%, sugar up by 13% and other ingredients such as baking powder and bicarbonate of soda rising by 18%. Sales of traditional cooking fruits such as raisins, sultanas and cherries are also up 47%, as the popularity of traditional bakes continues to increase. Baking beginners are trying their hand in the kitchen too, with sales of fuss free cake mixes up 44%. The supermarket launched these cake mixes earlier this year in their essential Waitrose range, so shoppers can whip up freshly baked cakes without the need for multiple ingredients. Jo Heywood, Waitrose Homebaking Buyer says “The anticipation for the Great British Bake Off is already building and yet again set to cause a stir with our shoppers as they rise to the challenge of recreating recipes from the show. In time for the new series we have our biggest homebaking range yet, so the nation’s homebakers will be able to create some sophisticated and classic cakes and bakes”. It’s quite timely really as National Cupcake Week is just around the corner running from the 16th until the 22nd September. So get baking.

By Jav OKAY, it’s not the most eye-popping car in the world, but Hongqi (Red Flag) are having a go.

China’s oldest manufacturer, who made their debut in 1958, originally intended to provide transport for the top echelons of government. Their cars were based on an old Chrysler design - and were produced in limited numbers. After years of confusion regarding direction, Hongqi are now being refocused both on their roots as a government car supplier and on the private luxury sector. So say hello to the H7, the first of the range to make it to market, aiming to win sales from the Audi A6L. And that is a tough ask. The H7, based on the Toyota Crown platform, comes with a choice of three engines. The 2.5-litre and 3.0-litre V6s are Toyota units, the former available for government purchasers only, and there is also a 2.0-litre turbo en-

Honk if you like Hongqi!

gine from FAW; which is Hongqi’s parent company. After two months of exclusive, governmentbased sales, the H7 was launched to private buyers back in May. The car is available in black only, while the dashboard and leather upholstery are light grey. Externally, the front works better than the rear, even though the grille, echoing the first Hongqi, resembles a Chinese fan.

There is also the distinctive raised red fin (symbolising the flag) on the bonnet, which has always been carried by Hongqi models. Despite these unique designs, there is a hint of Audi A6 about the look, possibly because of FAW’s experience as Audi’s joint venture partner in China. On top of that, the rear end is boxy and lacks visual interest. And cabin materials are nothing to write home about. The top

of the dashboard is easily scuffed, for example, Fair enough, equipment levels in the front are reasonable, and the touchscreen infotainment system is mounted high for easy use. However, this car is more about the experience in the rear cabin, where it boasts features usually seen only in high-end saloons like the Bentley Flying Spur. Whereas the front seats get heating only, the rear seats are, curiously, given cooling and

a massage function, all controlled via the large, central, fold-down armrest. In addition to the rear seats being adjustable electrically, the front passenger seat can also be moved by rear occupants heaven knows why. And, in keeping with the top-end machines, there is a fridge! On the road, the 2.0 turbo lacks sufficient power for such a large car. And though there is a sports mode for the

six-speed, automatic gearbox, there are no paddle shifters. Y0u must be getting my drift by now because this really isn’t a driver’s car. Even so, there is much to admire about the H7’s equipment levels, spacious rear and the design cues, which speak volumes of the Hongqi heritage. Unfortunately, the car is scarred by sub-standard interior quality, a poor drivetrain and a driving experience that just isn’t engaging enough. True, it’s a good effort by the Chinese company, but the entire project is, ultimately, confused. Equipment levels in the rear are high, but the cheap materials and lack of customisation let the side down. The driver and front passenger are also neglected in the package and, overall, the H7 will seem to be well beaten by the Jaguar XF, Audi A6 and BMW 5-series. Mind you, that’s pretty high company. You can never rule out the Chinese these days, and Hongqi could, ultimately, prove me wrong.

Make space for the Civic Tourer HONDA, promising bags of storage space, will present their new Civic Tourer for public consumption at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

This model, which will be in the showrooms early next year with an entry level at around £19,000, has been developed in Europe for the EU market. It has retuned chassis settings and the unusual option of automatic adaptive dampers on the rear axle. Despite the car’s sporty, low-roofed ap-

pearance, Honda say the Tourer has the best seats-up luggage capacity in its class: an impressive 624 litres with the tonneau cover in place. The Tourer also has the significant advan-

23rd August - 29th August 2013

tage of a completely flat and notably low-load floor. That’s thanks to the Civic’s unusual floorpan design, which sites the fuel tank under the front seats, freeing up space beneath the rear

seats. The extra room, combined with the compact torsion beam axle, enables the car’s rear floorpan to sit much lower than in rival cars. Like the Jazz supermini, the Civic’s “magic”

rear seats - which have a 60:40 split - have folding and pivoting squabs. They can be raised with seat backs upright, allowing tall objects to be carried upright in the rear. And the squabs can drop into the rear passenger footwell, allowing the backs to fold low and flat. However, what the Tourer doesn’t share with the Jazz is a foldforward, front passenger seat. The result is that its maximum load-bay length is just under 1.8m. Although the Tourer shares its wheelbase and height with the fivedoor Civic hatch, Honda has extended the rear

floorpan to give the Tourer a 1040mm overhang, 235mm longer than that of the hatch. The loading lip has also been dropped on the Tourer by a significant 137mm, something designed to appeal as much to dog owners as load carriers. Prices are expected to be up to £1,000 higher than the equivalent Civic hatch. That means the entry-level Tourer will be 140bhp 1.8 i-VTEC petrol, costing about £19,200. A 118bhp 1.6 i-DTEC diesel is the other engine option. Hondo really do have high hopes for the Tourer, envisaging

Tenerife’s opening-day blues

DID you hear the thud? If you didn’t, it was the sound of CD Tenerife crashing back to earth.

The club have had a horrible week, and all the early-season enthusiasm has disappeared. CDT travelled to the mainland in great spirits after a near-perfect pre-season which saw them undefeated. They had won a twolegged challenge with Las Palmas, saw off topflight Osasuna and put five past La Liga’s Rayo Vallecano. The new signings were bedding in well, and Tenerife didn’t have the off-field problems affecting most of the competition. That said, they did pick up some injuries to key players. The “spine” were all crocked: centre-back Rigo, ball-winner Inigo Ros and topscorer Aridane. Despite this, there was a spring in the step for Sunday’s match at Al-

hangover, lack of fitness and preparation. As always with Tenerife, the script went out of the window. Alcorcon dominated the match as CDT manager Alvaro Cervera’s safety-first policy was brutally exposed. I understand the theory, and it worked last season. The idea is you

corcon. The hosts had experienced a torrid summer. They narrowly missed out on promotion in the play-offs, and their financial woes nearly saw them go to the wall. In fact, the club were only saved with hours to go, and just five days before the Tenerife match. They would surely be suffering a play-off

keep it water-tight first half - 4-2-3-1 is, in reality, 4-5-1 as everyone drops off. This leaves the isolated lump (Aridane) as the target to hold the ball up and bring in the on-rushing cavalry. Also, once the other side have tired from the first 45 minutes, you attack with wingers and pace against weary defenders. The problems start when you face fitter and better sides! Also, Tenerife seemed nervous - and what little they offered in attack was stilted by the need to keep numbers in defence. The hosts created plenty of half-chances, but no real gilt-edged opportunity. Despite the traditional overzealous ref, it looked as thought Tenerife would get away with it. Ayoze was toothless in attack and, with Suso and Luismi strangely kicking their heels on the bench, Cervera was set to steal a point. And then “Fergie Time” happened. Firstly, there were 11 minutes of it after a sickening head injury to Ruben Sanz. In the first minute, left-back Llorente - who likes an early bath - saw red for a debatable second yellow. It was the 10th time Ref Mones-

cillio, who had an awful game, showed the card. It was always going to be a tough ending. But on 96 minutes, the misery was complete. Bruno made a sliding tackle in the box and the ball appeared to brush his trailing arm. There was no intent and the contact was minimal. But, harshly, the ref pointed to the spot and Juli smacked the penalty past Aragoneses. So the return to the Second Division started with a defeat, and the week got worse as a fan website claimed that injured centre-back Rigo had been boozing during the match. Well, while it was true he was at a bar in Las Americas, there is no proof he was “drinking”. And anyway, he was not required to travel to the mainland. So what’s the story? Still, you know how strange fans can be! The following day, more concerning news broke of a major fall-out between captain Sergio Aragoneses and president Miguel Conception. It seems they had a bust-up during the club’s pre-season training camp in La Palma. Conception wanted

Sergio to change for a photo-call, and went mad when the keeper decided against it. From afar, it seems a case of “he said” and “she said”, but the club have fined Sergio what is believed to be 5,000 euros. Understandably, he is angered by this and has instructed lawyers to fight the case. Hardly the perfect platform before the first home game of the season, against Hercules on Sunday. The match kicks off at 6pm, and it’s nice to have matches back at a decent hour. The visitors started the season with a perfectly-acceptable draw with relegated Real Zaragoza. They bossed the match and were a little unlucky to ship a late equaliser. The Alicante mob are a good blend of seasoned pros and youngsters. They’ve been supported recently by the Pozzo family, who own Udinese, Watford and Granada. Hercules had a number of players on loan from them last season and already have six this time. Portsmouth and Tottenham fans will remember Noe Pamarot, who played nearly 100 matches in England, Gai Assulin was once at Man City and Brighton, while veteran ex-Las Palmas and Real Madrid striker Javi Portillo is still a handful at 34. Their best signing could turn out to be Dioni, who had a brilliant season at Leganes. Both times I saw him he impressed, and he will be a big danger. Hercules were among the bookies’ favourites to go down at the start of the season, but to my eyes they have a decent squad. They are well capable of returning to the mainland with something, and Tenerife will need to be razor-sharp. A second successive defeat would be a disaster, and we all know what occurred the last time this happened.

Fluff top of the crocks FLUFF Is Man Of The Match! That’s what the report from Ourplace Playboys claimed as the man himself checked out on 105.

So let’s just skip over the 8-0 whitewash at the hands of Bar 180 A, and the maximum from Justyn. Someone’s been on the pop again! Bar 180 are now just two points off table-

toppers Palms Sports Bar with a game in hand. However, the leaders cruised to a 6-2 victory over Scruffy Macs, with a 180 by Mally. Target Army put in an awesome display to swat aside Gaffers A. The match included a 157 finish and a 15-dart leg by Steve, plus a 153 checkout by Ray. Target Titans managed just two points at The Pub, while Phoenix Bar were pushed all the way to the trebles leg by a resilient

Vikings Ensecan. Del Boy’s first maximum of the season came during Ourplace Naturals’ last-leg win over La Caña Pirates. Summerlands’ Paddy gets his name up in lights this week after striking a maximum in a final-rubber win over fellow Division one side Marilyns. Gaffers B have drawn their last two matches, but they got back to winning ways in some style by hammering Trap Door 7-1. That puts them top of

the league after Rood, sadly, had to postpone at the last minute. I am sure I speak on behalf of everyone in offering Rood our condolences at this difficult time for them. Amistad 1, yet to win a match, came unstuck again as they lost at home to Bar 180 C, while Bar 180 B couldn’t quite match their stablemate’s result. Indeed, they had to win the trebles leg to tie the game with Naughty Nautas.

Hat-tip this week to The Rebels, in Division 2. With Walter hitting his second 180, they showed they are not without a cause, taking all eight points from Ourplace Playgirls. Tenerife Sun continue to lead the way at the top. Their opponents, Emerald Shamrocks, are no mugs, but they were seemingly helpless against the Silencio outfit, who bashed them 7-1. La Caña Lancers are having a fine campaign,

and that was evident during an Abrigos derby with Phoenix Flights, who managed just the one singles leg. Sundowners had to wait until the last leg to claim a win over Amistad 2, while a fourman team from Pas O Nadas did likewise to beat Barracuda Hunters. And finally, more squeaky-bottom stuff at Bar 180 D as the trebles leg gave them the chance of victory over Picassos. They duly obliged.

UD Las Palmas win Adeje Tournament

Sport In Brief Arise Sir Mo - and why not? PRIME MINISTER David Cameron will “warmly welcome” a recommendation for Britain’s greatest-ever athlete to be knighted.

That’s how Sir Lord Coe viewed Mo Farah after his magnificent 10,000m/5,000m titlewinning double in the World Championships, which finished in Moscow on Sunday. Add Mo’s similar Olympic double in London last year and it puts him laps ahead of the opposition. And the Prime Minister is in agreement, saying: “The Olympic and world double-double is one of the great sporting achievements. “If the honours committee were to recommend Mo for a knighthood, I would warmly welcome it.” As plain Seb Coe, the Olympic mastermind and former Games champion has no doubt about Mo’s claim to greatness. He has witnessed the rise and rise of the Somalia-born, British-raised long-distance runner during one of the most remarkable periods in UK athletics. Farah said after his epic 5,000m triumph: “What a year I’ve had. It has been hard work and I’ve been away from my family for long periods, but I’ve enjoyed this year. “I can’t quite believe it at all. It is something I never dreamt of. I am honoured to be able to achieve what I have.” His Olympic double earned him a CBE at the end of 2012, and what’s so say he won’t be Sir Mo before the end of this year?

UD Las Palmas take home the 20th Soccer Tournament Villa de Adeje trophy, and CD Tenerife were runnersup in this year’s tournament.

The event was held last Sunday and UD Las Palmas took the top

spot after beating CD Tenerife by two goals to one. The Gran Canarian team scored their winning goals in the first half, Roberto Bolaños Melian Jesus and Jesus Quintana Garcia hitting the target. The mayor of Adeje, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, congratulated all the teams, who demonstrated a true

level of sportsmanship during the tournament and said that “we are already working on next year’s event." At the same time he praised the work of the Department

of Sports, presiding Adolfo Alonso Ferrera and of all workers who made it possible for the Tournament Villa de Adeje to move forward in the right direction.

Death of a Paralympian hero

WELSHMAN Chris Hallam, one of the great pioneers of disabled sport in the Eighties and Nineties, has died after a long illness.

The athlete won medals for swimming and wheelchair racing in the 1988, 1992 and 1996 Paralympian Games. Chris, who lived in Pontypool, twice set course records while winning the London Marathon. The wheelchair racer, paralysed below the chest in a motorcycling accident, was already a good swimmer and, within a few years, he won the 50m breaststroke at the World Disabled Games. His London Marathon victories came in 1985 and 1987, and he added further Paralympic medals in Seoul, Barcelona and Atlanta. Mr Hallam, who was in his late 40s, retired from competitive sport in 1996. Jim Munkley, Disability Sport Wales board member and a fellow British team member, said: “Chris will be remembered as a true legend of Paralympic and Welsh sport.” John Harris, a lifelong friend and fellow athlete, added: “Quite simply, Chris was my hero. “For me, Chris was the first of the true professionals in Paralympic sport.”

SPANIARD ‘Rafa Nadal beat American John Isner to win his first Cincinnati title at the weekend.

It was one of the few remaining crowns left for him to collect, and a 59th career victory for the Mallorcan superstar. His straight-sets win success put him back up to No2 in the world rankings, having beaten Canada’s Milos Raonic to win the Montréal Rogers’ Cup a week earlier. Rafa, a shock first-round Wimbeldon loser this year, is now aiming for the forthcoming US Open title. The 27-year-old, beaten only by Serbia’s world No1 Novak Djokovic in ATP events, has now secured nine out of 11 titles this season.

Big Boys set the early pace

WE’VE had just two rounds of matches in the Direct Telecom Pool League, but the favourites have already set down some early markers. Division One defending champions Tenerife Hammers A have bounced back from their Charity Shield defeat in style with a couple of smooth wins. After getting revenge on Phoenix Knights last week, they swept past new boys Exiles A on Tuesday. The 10-2 result may have been a little harsh on the Exiles lads, who will have learned from the experience. Gaffers A are right with the champions, winning a little cuter than the 7-5 scoreline suggests at Treehouse A. But the hosts were without Greg, who suffered a freak accident earlier in the day and will not be getting his long leg over a pool table for a while. La Cana A are also 100% after a second straight 7-5 win, Dreamers A their latest victims. Cana A

were 4-0 up before a Dreamers’ fightback which happened just a little too late. Palms A were far too strong for Terrace A. They are really struggling, and especially Malcolm, who was poor all night. The Phoenix lads both recorded wins. Knights returned to winning ways at Toscales A, while Potters were pushed all the way by Tenerife Hammers C before sneaking home 7-5. Peacocks were too good for Inn The Pink A in Puerto Colon. They came home 9-3, and Pink may have been inconvenienced as Graham arrived late after going to the Terrace Bar on the Golf rather the one in PC! This Tuesday sees a massive clash as Tenerife Hammers A travel to face Gaffers A in a match which is already a title sixpointer. There are five teams with perfect records in Division Two, and Gaffers B are the early leaders on ‘frames won’ after accounting for

Shortys 9-3. Bluebell B dropped the one frame in beating new girls Cosy Corner B, and Inn The Pink B lost just three in toppling Cosy Corner’s A team. Palms B were delighted to win 10-2 against Bar 13, and James Place were made to work harder for their 7-5 win over Bar B to join the quintet.

Not many sides win at Exiles B, so hat-tip to Bluebell A for their 9-3 success, and Toscales B secured their first win of the season, at Picasso’s A. Gaffers C could be a team to watch after their 9-3 win at Dreamers, while Tenerife Pool Tables got on the board at home to Bar La Cana B. Gazza 7-balled Fat
