END OF AN ERA RICARDO Melchior Navarro is to resign as President of the Tenerife Cabildo after 14 years at the helm.
He will be replaced by Carlos Alonso Rodriguez, the current VicePresident and Head of Tourism, As from 5pm on Monday, Carlos Alonso will lead the Tenerife Cabildo (government). An extraordinary meeting will take place, during which Ricardo Melchior will resign and Carlos Alonso inaugurated. You will be able to view the formal session through the Cabildo’s media channels. This move was mooted at the beginning of the year, but it was hoped that Melchior would see out his term. However, this will not be the case. For 14 years as the Island’s President, Ricardo Melchior has worked tirelessly towards consensus between the different political forces. That was his goal, which he expressed in his speech when he first took over in 1999, saying: “I will work towards facilitating greater policy efficiency for the island.” From the outset, his priority has been to care for people, improve their quality of life and ensure that Tenerife is an island which has advanced and competitive projects. Throughout his reign, Ricardo Melchior has achieved his goal of promoting activities that generate wealth and employment, which he worked on daily. Another of his obligations was to achieve cooperation with each municipality and ensuring a decent public services for the most needy. Monday will be a sad day as the Canarian-born politician steps down. In his early years, he studied Industrial Engineering at the University of Navarra and in Germany, returning to Tenerife in 1977 and being appointed Director of CAPSA, the company which managed the port of Tenerife. Then, after six years with UNELCO, fulfilling his passion for renew-
able energy, his political career began as Tenerife Councillor for Planning and Economic Development. He also held the position of Cabildo VicePresident. He was elected Presi-

dent and head of the Canary Coalition, attracting 150,000 votes in 1999. He was re-elected in 2003, 2007 and, most recently, in 2011. Throughout his presidency, he has champi-
oned renewable energy and has worked in researching, developing and demonstrating renewable energy throughout the European Union, taking an active role in seminars, congresses
and conferences. Ricardo Melchior is a member of the Scientific Committee of the Institute of Solar Energy in Germany, and founder of European Solar Council (Paris Club), the Eu-
ropean Communities for Renewable Energy (CERE) and the European Agency for Renewable Energy. He also holds the position of President of the Board of the Teide National Park. He has always made himself accessible to the media and, as a fluent English speaker, he has given great support to Canarian Weekly and the Expat community over the years. A spokesperson from Prensa Coalición Canaria Tenerife told Canarian Weekly: “Ricardo Melchior is stepping down because he believes this is the best decision for Tenerife, and for his politician group.” Carlos Alonso is a worthy replacement. The more-than-approachable, Canarian-born politician began his career in the late 1990s. As an advocate of technology and social networks, it looks as though family man Alonso will be able to take Tenerife to the next level.

emergency?
Canarian passenger joy

Benidorm balcony death
A BRITISH tourist died last weekend after falling from a fifth-floor hotel room in Benidorm while on a stag party. Emergency services were called at around 2.45am after the 34-year-old man toppled off the balcony. He is said to have been killed outright as a direct result of his injuries. One theory is that he got out of the lift on the wrong floor and, when he received no answer from knocking on the door, he attempted to climb through a window on to the balcony.
Job Creation bonus to end
GRANTS for employing certain types of staff are set to end this month. Currently, if you are in business in Tenerife and are thinking about taking on additional staff for the autumn, then get them on to contracts now as you may qualify for a grant from the Canarian Government. The scheme began in the summer and to qualify, prospective employees must have been registered as job-seeking with the Servicio Canario de Empleo for a minimum of three months. Employer grants range between 255615 euros per worker.

The Emergency and Security Coordination Center (CECOES ) 1-1-2 as we know it has dealt with a total of 4,317 calls from non-Spanish speakers in the first six months of this year. Of those requests more than 2,800 were answered in English,
but operators also dealt with calls in German , French and Italian . In the first three months of the year there were over 800 calls per month , while in April , May and June CECOES 1-1-2 received an average of 600 calls per month from foreigners
requesting some kind of help . Calls related to many different things with security incidents topping the list, a little over 46per cent, followed by health care requests, almost 27.5 per cent and requests for other information
15 per cent. 7 per cent related to accident reporting, various kinds of technical assistance 2.5 per cent and firerelated incidents and marine salvage both accounted for less than 1 per cent of the total calls made by foreigners.
National Police joining forces with Google The Spanish National Police Force has added itself to Google’s list of partners using its own websites to offer safety advice and guidelines on the protection of children on the Internet to its millions of users in Spain. This year, teachers at more than 5,000 Spanish schools will be able to use this material as a resource for teaching their pupils about online safety as part of the Spanish National Police Master Plan for schools. The Spanish National Police Force and Google have agreed to collaborate on promoting child safety online through a number of different actions. The Spanish National Police Force has thus become one of Google’s many partners offering safety advice and other information on the protection of children in the use of technology. Through this partnership, the Spanish Police and the technology company wish to maintain their efforts to create
a safer Internet and educate Internet users with advice and best practices in this regard. The Director-General of the Spanish National Police Force, Ignacio Cosidó, met with the Director of Institutional Relations of Google in Spain, Bárbara Navarro, to implement this initiative by the Directorate - General of the National Police and to promote the agreement, the aim of which is to enhance information and prevention in terms of safety. The two institutions will undertake various activities, through which the Spanish National Police Force and Google aim to help
parents, teachers and the children themselves create a safer environment in the use of technology. Within the framework of this partnership and during the new academic year which has just started, teachers at more than 5,000 schools where the Spanish National Police Force gives educational talks on safety to pupils, teachers and parents as part of its Master Plan will be able to use the 40,000 guides drawn up by the Police and edited by Google to foster Internet safety among children. The Spanish National Police Force is thus continuing its preventive and educational work with the public on basic safety issues when using technology. The Internet is a highly useful tool - for both adults and children that is full of possibilities and information. However, a number of guidelines and safety rules should be followed to avoid certain risks, especially for children
as they are particularly vulnerable to these risks. Prevention is fundamental in this regard, as is offering useful information and tools to both children and their parents for them to learn how to use the Internet safely. The Spanish National Police Force is working in two separate areas to make the Internet a safer place: at an operational level, on the one hand; and also by offering information to the public on safety measures that can be adopted. Efforts are being made at an operational level by officers who specialise in technologyrelated offences, from both the Technology Investigation Brigade (Spanish acronym: BIT) and other central units, and from the support structure and the various specialised groups. The mission for these officers is to respond to the challenges posed by new forms of crime, such as child pornography, scams, fraud, cyberattacks and piracy.

Police warning: Belt up, or else! IN the past few weeks, the Guardia Civil have been concentrating on speeding motorists.
Now, their focus is seatbelts and child seats, and it will prove costly if you ignore the law! Failing to wear a belt carries a 200-euro fine and the loss of three points off a driver’s licence. And failure to use proper child seats is said to be the main cause of death in the over-fours. Every year in Spain, some 40 children die in car crashes because
of the incorrect type of seating being installed, A further 2,900 are injured, of whom 40% were not seated correctly. With these appalling statistics in mind, the traffic authorities have launched a crackdown campaign on drivers and passengers not wearing seatbelts, and children not travelling in correct safety seats. Despite the widespread feeling in Spain and the Canaries that belting up is not important, more than 200 people are killed in road accidents every year. Yet their lives would probably have been saved had they adhered
to the rules. The most recent figures available are from 2011, when 41% of fatal victims (196 people), were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash on town roads, and 22% (31 people) on main trunk roads were not belted-up in the accident which killed them. The Dirección General de Tráfico (General Directorate of Traffic, or DGT), says drivers and passengers in towns are twice as likely to ignore their belts as those on motorways and main national singlecarriageway highways, even though evidence shows seatbelts reduce the risk of serious
injuries or death by up to five times. Figures show that since the advent of the seatbelt, one million lives have been saved in Spain, and they are considered to be even more efficient than air-bags at preventing serious or fatal injuries. People not wearing seatbelts in cars involved in accidents can fly straight through the windscreen, or suffer severe blows to the head in crashes of lesser impact. Or they can even be flung around inside the vehicle, killing other occupants. So just remember: Be safe - belt up!

MANY of you have contacted me this week, stating your displeasure at the lack of facilities on the Arona coast; namely the absence of services on the beaches – no lifeguards, no sunbeds on Los Cristianos beach, etc, etc. Some of you have commented that, aside from the ongoing “All Inclusive” issue, you would not return to the area because there seems to be no “responsibility” shown by the powers that be. And also, the fact that if you want a sunbed, you have to use a very busy Las Vistas beach, and be charged 12 euros for the pleasure of using a piece of plastic for the day. So you can imagine my surprise when the Cabildo announced this week that seven municipalities, including Arona, have signed a cooperation agreement in relation to tourism. The collaboration is to co-ordinate promotional activities abroad. This agreement has a funding of 2.4 million euros allocated to it to promote tourism, and other municipalities may join later once the agreement is approved in full.
Its aim is to co-ordinate the promotion through Tenerife Tourism to optimise existing resources and push tourism as effectively as possible. That, hopefully, will be achieved via the tools and the experience of the sector under the Cabildo, which for more than a decade has been responsible for planning and implementing the action plan concerning the Island’s tourist promotion. I understand the rationale behind it; basically, it means all the major tourist resorts working together to sing off the same hymn sheet, as it were, so there’s no duplication, and there’s strength in numbers, etc, etc. But I’m baffled why the Cabildo would spend all of that money attracting visitors to a destination, only to discover that when they arrive, there are few of the basic requirements in place for them. Someone should really take a look at the beautiful beaches and facilities the UK boasts, such as Blackpool Sands in South Devon, Studland in Dorset and Bournemouth. Until next week…

León the gorilla is a typical male of his age, conceited and boastful. He’s nearing birthday his 15th and thinks he is the king of the world and only respects his brother Aladdin but just because he knows that he is a bit stronger. He is intelligent and lively, always has something to do and is never bored. He belongs to the western lowland gorillas, 170 cm in height and weighs 198 kg. He lives together with 5 other male gorillas of this species in the zoological institution of Loro Parque. Recently, something strange has happened. His daily routine has changed. With increased regularity León has been visited by his vet, he has met his brother less frequently in the exterior area of the park and the two haven’t been sleeping together anymore as they were used to. He didn’t know it but they were preparing him for the journey of his life which will take place later this year. He will leave his brother and his companions and cross the ocean to the Belo Horizonte zoo in Brazil. There he will have a family, female gorilla Imbi is already waiting for him and Lou-Lou who will be
sent at the same time to Brazil from the English Howlett zoo. León will be the only male gorilla in South America, the “star” of the zoo. Nobody will challenge him for his position as leader of the group. He will have all the females for himself and his descendants will ensure conservation of the species in the future. Imbi and Lou-Lou will be the first female gorillas León will see and smell since he left his mother 8 years ago in his native city Tel Aviv. León had to leave his family in a zoo in Israel when he developed into an adult and as a bounding gorilla challenged his father to fight for the leading position. He lost the fight. He and his brother were sent to the Loro Parque in which they stayed close together until they successfully won over Pole Pole, the then leading gorilla of the group. Today, Pole Pole peacefully lives under the control of Aladdin. In nature, gorilla families consist of one male and several female gorillas with young animals which leave the group when they have reached adolescence. They join together to groups with other males until they have found females to establish their own families. Previously, male
gorillas which lived in captivity and were abandoned from their families were a huge problem. Therefore, they were kept in separate cages in which they were isolated from the others. ”This was not a life for a social animal”, explains Juan Vicente Martínez who is standing near to the gorilla enclosure while León is furiously observing (lips pressed together, stealthy look…) the strangers standing close to his keeper. To solve this problem of the gorillas which are threatened by extinction a few zoos assemble groups of single male gorillas as a genetic reserve so they can have a social life as much as possible. Loro Parque has six male gorillas and is the largest in Europe. If a zoo needs a male for the reproduction, the EEP, the European Endangered Species Programme, selects an adequate animal. In this case, León has been chosen because he has ideal genetic, physical and mental characteristics in order to found the first gorilla family in South America. Juan Vicente Martínez “It seems that everything will be fine. Belo Horizonte is a good place with a similar climate and accustomed zoological facilities in which the
newcomers will live.” Juan Vicente is full of pride because Leon has been chosen; nevertheless, he doesn’t conceal the truth that it makes him very sad to lose his friend. Juan Vicente, who is immediately recognized by León and his other fellows, will accompany him on his journey in the hold of the airplane in a huge comfortable box in order to protect him from stress as much as possible. The logistics of the transport is very difficult and many months of preparation are necessary, explains Rafael Zamora, biologist of the center for species conservation, who is responsible for the details of the transport. Hygiene and safety rules, check-ups by vets as well as quarantines are aspects which have to be organized in advance in every detail. Juan Vicente wonders how León will react on his new environment. ” He is used to be with other male gorillas and to violently romp around with his brother. Now he has to learn how to deal with a female and how to copulate. He has never sensed a female gorilla since he left his childhood. Among the thousand gorillas which live in captivity all around the world, 429 gorillas (192 males and 237 females) live in zoological institutions in Europe.

Stub out the fag fraudsters EXPATS with information or suspicions about tobacco smuggling and tax fraud are being asked to call a Customs Hotline with any information that could lead to arrests or seizures. The call for help from the British community follows the jailing of convicted cigarette smuggler Malcolm McGowan, who is now starting a four-year jail term after being extradited from Spain. The freephone number to pass on information is 900 988 922. For people in the UK, it is 0800 595 000. People can also email customs.hotline@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk. There is no need to give personal details, and
information leading directly to an arrest could be considered for a small reward. McGowan, 61, originally from Edinburgh, was arrested by the Guardia Civil at a Valencia swimming pool on 10th August He fled the UK 12 years ago after being found guilty of smuggling 28.3 million cigarettes into the country. His crimes robbed the UK of around £4 million in duty and he was sentenced in his absence in December 2001. McGowan was part of a wider conspiracy to smuggle around 56 million cigarettes into the UK between November 1999 and March 2000.
13th September - 19th September 2013
Ten other men were involved in the plot, which short-changed the UK taxpayer of over £8.2 million. Adrian Farley, Assistant Director of Criminal Investigation for HM Revenue & Customs, said: “McGowan is finally facing UK justice after 12 years on the run. “We are determined to
pursue fugitives and ensure they face the consequences of their criminal activity. “And HMRC would like to thank the Spanish authorities and UK organisations who assisted with this operation.” The call to ring 900 988 922 comes as smugglers try to make huge profits from illegal imports of
cigarettes, and the selling of low-quality, counterfeit cigarettes, tobacco and alcohol. Customs officers are also keen for information about other items such as drugs, firearms, obscene material and endangered species. HMRC want to hear about Tax frauds such as betting and gaming,
money-laundering and the “carousel” VAT scam in Europe. An HMRC spokesman said: “Smugglers and fraudsters cheat the rest of us by not contributing the tax that pays for schools, hospitals and public services.” “People in the British expatriate community can help us to find them.”
Sleepy island can’t bank on Canarian status now! ATTEMPTS by a lobby group on La Graciosa to have their tiny island accepted as part of the Canaries may well have floundered. La Graciosa, which plays host to some 25,000 visitors a year, has been fighting for greater autonomy in recent months. Lobby group Lagraciosala8islacanaria collected thousands of signatures across the Canary Islands in May. It was a bid to convince the Canarian Government to accept La Graciosa as their eighth island - to become a fully-fledged
member of the archipelago. Recognition would mean locals no longer having to turn to Teguise Town Hall, in Lanzarote, whenever new rubbish containers were needed, or if they suffered a power cut. Now, though, the news that struggling Bankia will shut 54 of its bank branches across the Canary Islands next month seems to have scuppered their chances. Once Bankia’s La Graciosa branch closes after 25 years on the sleepy island covering just 29 square kilometres - all banking
will have to be carried out in neighbouring Lanzarote. And that after a 30-minute boat ride. The trip will also include a small drive to the municipality of Haría because the port town of Orzola, where the boats come in, is without a Bankia branch. But the closure of La Graciosa’s only bank leaves an even bigger question hanging over the people’s aspirations of self-sufficiency. Bankia had previously opened there just two days a week, but it did install a cash machine
for the benefits of residents and tourists. Yet that caused havoc when it was out of order for more than 10 days. Lobby spokesperson Miguel Páez told Spanish daily El Mundo: “They’re disrespecting our struggle and don’t realise what village life is like, With this move, they’re stopping us from progressing.” Yesterday (Thursday), the Gracioseros staged a demo in front of their Bankia branch in the hope of forcing a satisfactory solution from the bank. But not too many fingers were crossed!

Plastic fivers next for the Bank of England? THE Bank of England is considering replacing Britain’s paper banknotes with plastic-type polymer varieties.
To this end, it has lanched a consultation with the public and, should it get the green light from the man in the street, it will go ahead with the revolutionary scheme. It would be the first time in the 300-year history of official UK banknotes that they would consist of a material other than paper. The Bank also intends to trim the notes by some 15% smaller than the current versions.
Charlie Bean, the Bank’s deputy governor, said: “Polymer banknotes are cleaner, more secure and durable than paper notes, They are also cheaper and more environmentally friendly.” He added: “However, the Bank of England would print notes on polymer only if we were persuaded that the public would continue to have confidence in, and be comfortable with, our notes.” The consultation will last until November and the decision on whether to introduce the new notes will be made the following month. The UK would not be the first country to use polymer notes because they have been in cir-

culation in Australia for 25 years. And only recently, they were introduced in Canada, under the governorship of Mark Carney, who just happens to be the new Bank of England governor. The Bank has been researching the plas-
tic banknotes for three years, but the final decision to launch the consultation was made by Mr Carney. Polymer notes would, potentially, be introduced for the new £5 note, featuring Winston Churchill, and the new
£10, which will feature Jane Austen, in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Although the polymer notes cost around 50% more to produce than existing paper, they also last between 2½ and six times longer. Current £5 notes
have a life of around two years. The Bank also hopes the new notes, which are harder to counterfeit, would reduce banknote forgery in the UK, where there higher levels of fakes than in many other countries.
Mother is gunned down at her Turkish holiday home A DERANGED gardener shot a British woman dead and wounded her son and mother at their holiday villa in Turkey. Catherine Bury, a 56-year-old risk assessment manager, from Swainby, North Yorkshire, died during her poolside birthday bash after Velli Acar opened fire with a pump-action shotgun Her son Alex, a 24-year-old trainee doctor, suffered a
leg wound, while her mother, Celia Bury, 87, from Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough, was shot in the back. Both were detained in hospital for treatment. The gardener subsequently told police it was a crime of passion. He had argued on Friday with the family, who reported him to Turkish police. He was detained overnight on Saturday but, on his release, headed
back to the villa, in the small coastal resort of Dalyan, on Turkey’s south coast. He arrived in the early hours of Monday and opened fire. Terrified Ms Bury, known to friends as Anne, fled up three flights of stairs and bolted herself in a bathroom. But the crazed gunman blasted the bolt off, then shot her four times as she lay cowering on the tiled floor. She was pronounced
dead at the scene. The gardener-cum-gunman gave himself up on Tuesday and was remanded in custody Stephen Garbutt, 72, who lives in the adjoining bungalow to the dead woman in Swainby, said: “I never heard a bad word, or a cross word from any of them. “How on earth they got into this situation I cannot imagine. I have never known Anne to be in trouble.”

Showtime presents The best of Tenerife Comedy Club 2013!
ROB DEERING is the UK’s foremost guitarwielding, looplayering, stand-up comedian.
He spent the first 12 years of his life in West London, living near Heathrow Airport. Woohoo! His primary school was progressive, and it is unclear whether this environment was what led to his understated but deep-rooted dislike of authority, and resistance to proper jobs. It certainly wasn’t drummed out of him. At 12, Rob’s extrovert nature and love of a good quiz led to his first TV appearance, on the successful and well-known TVam game Crack It. In 1986 the Deering
family moved to Oxfordshire, where Rob did a great deal in the way of drama and music, and very little in the way of hygiene and personal grooming. After failing to get famous in a variety of bands - Wax Lyrical, The Jemimah Stepdads, Giant, Silver, The Glass Needle, Galar - he focused on drama. His theatre career continued on and off for nearly a decade, during which time he visited a lot of countries - he loved Sweden in particular, Belgium less so. Non-comedians sometimes express terror at the idea of getting up behind the mic in front of a drunken crowd on a Saturday night. But to Rob, it feels like home compared with a Catholic school in Bel-
gium on a November morning. He first visited Edinburgh in 1992, and even lived there briefly (94-95. And he still loves it, even if the residents may not feel the same way about him. He is, after all, English. It took a brief spell of writing theme tunes, pop songs and jingles, combined with the love of a good woman, to bring Rob back to London, where, at the beginning of 2000, his stand-up comedy career began in earnest. Yet he had already spent a decade or so finding any excuse to get up on stage, leading, for example, to a legendary sing-a-long of the Home And Away theme tune late one night at the Edinburgh Festival in 1994. In 2000-2001, his sets were memorable for featuring some top-notch falling over, but his trusty Stratocaster didn’t join the act until 2003, which is around the time his act developed its hard, socio-political edge. He appeared on TV in RI:SE, far and away the best breakfast programme ever produced by Channel Four. His debut was memorable for featuring some top-notch falling over, but it was when Rob joined the intrepid cast of 99 Things To Do Before You Die that his Mum and Dad truly felt proud. Meanwhile, his standup act developed and spread, through a dozen countries, as many Edinburgh Festival shows and tours, and beyond the guitar. He’s a 21st Century one-man band, albeit avoiding the mouth-organ-on-a-frame, drumstied-to-the-legs, borderline-nutjob cliché!
How, why & when did you start in comedy? I’ve been getting on stage and trying to get laughs at the drop of a hat for as long as I can remember. At school, I used to fake up announcements to get a two-minute spot in assembly. First time in a comedy club? Probably a good 15 years ago now. Why? Because otherwise I’d be a real pain in the a*** in the living room. What was your break/ turning point? 10th Feb 2001. Favourite place performed? Well, I had a great time at the Englishman, Irishman and a Scotsman show in Perth, Australia, this Summer - which is a relief, as that’s quite far away. But I feel like I’m home when I do The Stand in Glasgow, Komedia in Brighton, the Glee Club in Birmingham or, of course, the Comedy Store in London. Did you have an Edinburgh show this year? if so, what was it all about? I did my late-night comedy pop quiz Beat This, which is about pop music and shenanigans; possibly the only place you’ll see TV’s biggest comedy stars getting drunk and doing slapdash karaoke. What’s your aim/goal in comedy? To entertain as many people as possible. The more in any one place at any one time the better. And I fully intend to entertain myself along the way. Who is/was your comedy hero? I don’t really have one; I’m a comedy man rather than a comedy fan.
You can catch Rob Deering at the Best Of The Tenerife Comedy Club on Saturday 21st September alongside Michael Fabbri, Wes Zaharuk and Will Mars, at Showtime, Las Americas. Call 669 622 622 for tickets, or book online at www.showtimetenerife.com Page 10

bridge will continue to carry out royal engagements, but he is not expected to increase his number of public duties. Sources say the second in line to the throne is in a “transitional“ year. He is considering options for his “public service”, and an announcement will be made about his decision in the next 12 months. Air Chief Marshal Sir Andrew Pulford paid tribute to Flight Lieutenant Wales, saying
he had been an integral part of the RAF’s search-and-rescue force as a Sea King pilot based in Anglesey. He added: “Throughout his tour his airmanship, often in the most demanding of conditions, has contributed directly to saving lives in the mountains of North Wales, and from the ravages of the Irish Sea. “He has earned the respect of all who have worked with him as a highly-professional and
competent pilot.” A statement from Kensington Palace said: “His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge is to leave operational service in the armed forces. “He completes his tour with the Royal Air Force search-and-rescue force at RAF Valley, Anglesey, after more than 7½ years of full-time military service. “He will continue to support the work of the Queen and the Royal Family through
a programme of official engagements, both at home and overseas, with the Duchess of Cambridge. “The Duke will work closely over the next 12 months with the Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. “He will expand his work in the field of conservation, particularly in respect of endangered species. “The Duke will continue to work with his
charities on issues relating to children and young people, veterans and serving members of the armed forces. “The Duke is currently considering a number of options for public service, a further announcement on which will follow in due course. “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George are expected to move into their official residence at Kensington Palace within the next few weeks.”
Salmonella strikes again!
Food Standards Agency (FSA) has revealed that nine people are known to have had hospital treatment. Investigations had found a potential common link to cooked ham from local butchers, and the FSA said: “Testing has been carried out on ham supplied to a number of butchers identified in the investigation. “No trace of salmo-

nella has been found, but other hygiene issues were identified that led
to one supplier voluntarily withdrawing certain batches of ham.
Investigations are ongoing.” Other potential cases are being investigated in both countries by public health officials, the FSA and environmental health officers. The outbreak was initially detected in Wales last month, based mainly on Conwy and Gwynedd. Additional clusters were investigated in
England in the Thames Valley, Leeds, Cumbria and Stafford areas, according to the FSA. Patients ranged in age from seven months to 87 years. Salmonella poisoning is usually caused by eating contaminated raw or under-cooked food, such as meat, eggs and dairy products. The last major UK salmonella crisis occurred in 2007.

Jobs galore at new-tech JLR JAGUAR Land Rover will give the UK economy a boost by creating 1,700 new jobs at its Solihull factory as part of a £1.5bn new-technology investment.
The money will be used to develop an innovative aluminium chassis for future models. The new jobs will bring the total number announced by JLR over the last three years to almost 11,000. Chief Executive Dr Ralf Speth, revealing the news at the Frankfurt Motor Show, said: Today’s announcement signals Jaguar Land Rover’s ambitions to push the boundaries
and redefine premium car ownership. “At Jaguar Land Rover, we place the customer at the heart of everything we do. “And the introduction of a world-class, allnew aluminium vehicle architecture means we will be more competitive, flexible and efficient, delivering exciting new products for our customers around the world.” The company’s first model fitted with the new architecture will be a Jaguar sports sedan, which is set to be launched in 2015. It will also feature the first engine to be built at a new, £500m Engine Manufacturing Centre near Wolverhampton. Jaguar also unveiled its first-ever sports crossover concept ve-
hicle, the C-X17, which will also have the new aluminium technology. Prime Minister David Cameron said: ”This is fantastic news for Solihull, and a huge vote of confidence in the UK. “This investment will also deliver another 24,000 jobs in the supply chain - on top of the 1.3 million the private sector has already created since 2010. “Our motoring industry is world class - right out there at the front of the global race - and Jaguar Land Rover is a great example of that British excellence.” The Prime Minister added: “One vehicle rolls off a production line somewhere in the UK every 20 seconds, and the Government’s automotive industrial strategy will help to
continue this success for years.” Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “This all-aluminium architecture project typifies the type of innovative and high value R&D that the UK excels, and Government is supporting it through the automotive industrial strategy.” The JLR company, owned by India’s Tata Motors, has three advanced manufacturing facilities in the UK in Solihull and Castle Bromwich in the West Midlands, and Halewood on Merseyside. The Solihull site, which has been home to Land Rover since production began in 1948, currently builds the Defender, Discovery, new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport.
Corrie star cleared
A JURY this week found actor Michael Le Vell - Coronation Street’s Kevin Webster - not guilty of 12 child sex-abuse charges, including rape. Mr Le Vell, 48, on trial at Manchester Crown Court under his real name of Michael Turner, breathed out and said “Thank you” as the jury’s verdicts were announced on Wednesday after the eight-day trial. He had maintained his innocence throughout, and, as the male foreman began giving the verdicts to a hushed and packed courtroom after some five hours of deliberations, his relief was clear. His brother and sisters, who sat in the public gallery, were in tears as the verdicts were delivered. And one man even shouted “get in” when the last verdict was delivered. His accuser, who cannot be named, was not in court for the
verdicts, but she had earlier sobbed as she claimed the TV star had raped her as she clutched a teddy bear. The actor, surrounded by supporters outside court, described the verdict as “a big weight off everyone’s shoulders”. Mr Le Vell, who admitted during the trial to being an alcoholic, added: “I might go and have a drink now.” When asked when he would return to
Coronation Street, he said: “I don’t know. I might have a holiday first. I’ll have to have a chat with my boss.” A Coronation Street spokeswoman said: “We are looking forward to meeting with Michael to discuss his return to the programme.” The eight female and four male jurors were told they had to decide whether the alleged victim was telling the truth, or had set out to “quite literally destroy the life” of the accused.
During the eight-day trial, the “demons” in Mr Le Vell’s private life were exposed: his alcoholism and his string of one-night stands while his then wife, Janette Beverley, battled breast cancer. And he admitted abandoning the family home to get drunk in his local each night. It was, said his legal team, a “strange case of child rape” without any DNA evidence or injuries to the alleged victim, who claimed she had been raped and abused as a young girl. Close friend Nigel Pivaro, who played Terry Duckworth in the Street, said: “He has suffered two years of hell and probably more, far more than most, also, due to his high profile “It has been a long journey for him. Now the jury has spoken, he can pick up his career and his life.” A CPS spokesman said: “This case was reviewed in great detail, and the evidence subject to careful scrutiny before a decision was taken to prosecute.

German kids muck in at Accion A GROUP of German students, selected from various schools, spent 11 fascinating days at Accion’s refuge as part of a project “Animal and Environmental protection in other countries”.
The youngsters enjoyed their stay so much that they recorded a day-to day diary of how they got on. Monday “We arrived at the refuge and received a warm welcome from refuge director Marion Gonzalez. We were given a guided tour, followed by an informal talk regarding our tasks and duties. Tuesday Our first day was mainly about theory, and we learnt the origin of the dog, together with hands-on animal behaviourism as we took a gentle walk to the beach with a few of the dogs. Wednesday
Accion del Sol news
We spent the day cleaning the kennels and grooming the dogs and the two ponies, which also reside at the refuge. We also watched the vet performing a castration. Thursday The entire day was spent at Loro Park, and we were all excited beforehand because some of us were already aware of the park from television. We already
knew a lot about animal husbandry, which enabled us to view the park with different eyes, Friday We started with kennel duties, and later, went to the beach to collect rubbish which had been carelessly dropped, or had been washed up by the tide. Saturday Four of us had a very early morning, helping
to take five dogs to the airport. They were on a flight to Germany to start their new lives in new homes. Afterwards, we all left for a trip to see the landscape of Mount Teide. Sunday We visited a local farmers’ market, and then, for the rest of the day, we were allowed to play at Siam Park. Monday Apart from our normal kennel duties, we had an afternoon trip to the
Ostrich Farm at Atogo, where we could see how the animals live. Tuesday We divided into small groups for various activities, including horse-riding or walking a barranco to see how the water had carved the caves and landscape over the years. Later we went to El Medano’s wind-surfing beach, where we cooled off in the sea. Wednesday Our last day at the
shelter and after a paella lunch, we each took a dog and were driven to a nearby town, where we distributed fliers to tourists and locals alike to draw attention to the refuge. Thursday Our final farewell, and most of us were sad to leave “our” dogs, and saying farewell to the González family was not easy for us. We returned to the airport for our journey home after a memorable trip.

This is the spectacular climax of the farming year, when fortunes are won or lost in the attempt to put food on our plates. Farmers have spent all year carefully tending their crops helped by the very latest science, but they are still at the mercy of our fickle weather. Then she goes back to her roots to share her inspiration for a seriously chocolatey chocolate digestive cheesecake with white icing - that does not involve any cooking. Next, salad gets an autumn twist, in a hearty pan-fried balsamic pear salad with pancetta, gorgonzola and a warm honey dressing, and in another seasonal treat Lorraine rustles up homely chutney and gives it a twist with apple, blackberries and cinnamon.

For ten years Jonathan Broom has been obsessed with building his own home. He and his wife Deborah have put everything on hold while he pursues his dream of a miniature, lavish Hollywood Hillsstyle mansion. Ellie Harrison discovers how much of our countryside has been transformed into a food factory, squeezing out our precious farmland wildlife - and how farmers are now bringing countryside creatures back from the brink by creating new places for them to live. She visits an organic farm and a scheme in Wiltshire where farmers are working together to recreate habitat on a huge scale. Adam Henson takes a trip down memory lane to his childhood where hares were a common sight and finds out why they have declined so much; Steve Leonard investigates the charismatic barn owl; and Michaela Strachan takes a spooky walk in search of the greater horseshoe bat.
Chefs Tony Singh and Cyrus Todiwala want to transform the way British dishes are cooked at home. The two old friends believe Britain has some of the best produce in the world but think we are missing a trick when it comes to cooking with spices. In this episode, Tony and Cyrus sample the best West Suffolk has to offer. At the stately home of Melford Hall, they transform cucumber sandwiches and a Victoria sponge by adding salt and chilli to the sandwiches and a fennel and orange butter cream to a Victoria sponge, which they then serve up for 40 sceptical members of the Women's Institute. Cyrus uses a colourful array of ground spices to cook a spicy beef burger with chilli, cumin and coriander, and Tony tucks into a spicy cumin and chilli chip butty. Tony and Cyrus also visit the annual Hadleigh agricultural show and are keen to show how spices can enhance fruit.

In his first interview since the birth of Prince George, The Duke of Cambridge talks about fatherhood, the future and the importance of wildlife conservation work in this one-off documentary, Prince William’s Passion: New Father, New Hope. The interview was undertaken at Kensington Palace for ITV by awardwinning documentary-maker Jane Treays, during which Prince William shares his joy at becoming a father, talks about his hopes for his new family and his passion for wildlife conservation and Africa. Recalling the moment he introduced his son to the world’s media outside St Mary’s Hospital, the Duke says: “I think I was on such a high anyway, and so was Catherine about George, that really we were happy to show him off to whoever wanted to see him. As any new parent knows, you’re only too happy to show off your new child and, you know, proclaim that he is the best looking or the best everything.”

This tribute to the broadcasting legend who died recently looks back at a pioneering and extraordinarily diverse career on both sides of the Atlantic. From That Was The Week That Was to The Frost Report, TV-am to Through The Keyhole, Sir David Frost conducted memorable and historic interviews with presidents, prime ministers and some of the world’s most famous stars. The programme hears from colleagues and friends who worked with Frost during a career in television which spanned over 50 years and features a previously unseen interview with Sir David Frost himself. Fabulous Fashionistas Award-winning director Sue Bourne explores the art of ageing in the company of six extraordinary women in a Cutting Edge film. With an average age of eighty, Bridget, Daphne, Jean, Gillian, Sue and Lady Trumpington have something inspirational in common – to keep going, to look fabulous and to have fun. Without botox or plastic surgery, these women are redefining old age – in style. Not one of them feels like an ‘old person’ and, in their own ways, they are defying expectations of the ageing process. Fabulous Fashionistas features uplifting, often poignant personal stories and insights into how staying young and dressing with style is about more than following the latest trends, but about an attitude to life itself. Bridget, aged 75, looks a million dollars, but her clothes and accessories come from charity shops and she survives on just £100 a week. Her most expensive recent purchase was a pair of Doc Marten boots for £4. Bridget has been a campaigner all her life and does not intend to give up now – taking on the task of raising the profile of older women. Bridget says: ‘Style, as one gets older, is more noticeable. How I look is to do with my identity and the fun of it. It’s nothing to do with looking younger.’ Daphne is Britain’s oldest model at 85, but was only re-discovered when she was 70 years old. Recently widowed, she was invited to do a fashion shoot was soon signed up by a leading model agency. Since, she has travelled the world and become the iconic face of older models. Daphne says: ‘I’m now 85 and I think [about] when I get old… but so far I haven’t got old’.

Manchester United v Bayer Leverkusen ITV1, 19.30
Adrian Chiles introduces live coverage of the UEFA Champions League Group A tie between Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen from Old Trafford. Former United captain Roy Keane and Lee Dixon join Adrian in the studio as the Red Devils bid to start their European campaign on a high against the 2002 runners-up in manager David Moyes’s first competitive European match with the club. The Premier League champions will hope to ease their way into the knock-out stages of the competition from a group which also contains Shakhtar Donetsk and Real Sociedad. Last season United were knocked out by Real Madrid following a controversial red card for Nani. The German team, managed by former Liverpool favourite Sami Hyypia, will hope they can emulate the achievements of domestic rivals Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich by reaching the final. Following the loss of star player Andre Schurrle to Chelsea over the summer their key man may be Stefan Kiessling, who scored 27 goals last season.

The Midwives BBC2, 21:00
Series following the work of midwives. This episode features the midwives of the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, home to the busiest labour ward in Wales, and focuses on the women who have chosen anassisted delivery for their baby, foregoing the anaesthetic of an epidural. Some opt to use just gas and air for pain relief, whilst otherssuch as mum-to-be Emma want to take the natural approach further, using only a birthing pool. However for the midwives, the 'perfect birth' is never straightforward and Emma's baby 'Gryff' has a real surprise in store. Meanwhile, mum Kayleigh has three false alarms before beginning her labour. Yet due to an existing conditiion, she cannot be given an epidural, giving midwife Amie just 30 minutes to deliver her baby. Finally, Ukrainian midwife Tatiana believes that 'pain is a state of mind' and reveals a few of her tricks of the trade when dealing with mum Chelsea, who is nervous after a tricky first birth.
Coach Trip – coming soon
Channel 4 has commissioned a brand new series of the cult hit daytime format, Coach Trip. Legendary tour guide, Brendan Sheerin, will lead a tour group of strangers on a rollercoaster ride across Europe. Commissioning and Development Editor for Channel 4 Daytime, David Sayer, has ordered the ninth series from production company 12 Yard, the ITV Studios-owned indie. Guided by Brendan, the holiday-makers will be soaking up the sights and sounds of southern Europe across the 30x30 series. Each action-packed episode will see the tourists partake in the culture and customs of the countries ensuring thrills and spills along the journey. However, with a vote at the end of each day - which will see the least popular pair of travellers leave the bus - there is guaranteed to be backstabbing, tactical voting, tears and tantrums along the road. Tour guide, Brendan Sheerin says: “I think it’s absolutely fabulous. It’s the answer to lots of people’s prayers. I’m ready to ride the coach again.”

Father Figure BBC1, 22.35 Created, written by, and starring comedian Jason Byrne, new BBC One sitcom Father Figure follows the everyday chaos of the Whyte family. Jason Byrne plays family man Tom Whyte – a man who tries to be the best dad he can to his two sons while his wife works full time. He’s the kind of dad all kids would want and the kind of dad that all men would secretly like to be. In the first episode of the series Tom Whyte invites his timid neighbours Helen and Brendan over for a relaxed dinner party to say sorry, after previously causing them minor injuries in a disastrous incident with the barbecue. But, chaos is never far away where Tom is concerned and his family are convinced things will go horribly wrong with him at the helm. With the arrival of best friend Roddy, who brings along his own interpretation of dessert much to Tom’s dismay, and his parents unexpectedly descending on the house, Tom feels that the whole world is conspiring against him getting the meal ready in time. Things take a turn for the worse when wife Elaine arrives back from work and starts on the wine - Drew is sick on the trampoline and mother Mary gets stuck in the bathroom. By the time Brendan and Helen walk up the drive, Tom is at his wit’s end and it looks like he’ll owe them another apology very soon. The Three Day Nanny will follow professional nanny, Kathryn Mewes, as she answers the cries for help from desperate parents. Across this new series, Nanny Mewes will help families struggling with fussy eaters, temper tantrums and sleepless nights. Using her unique three day plan of action, Kathryn will move into households which are being ruled by tearaway tots to give parents the tools they need for a happy home.

The Wonder Of Dogs

BBC2, 20.00
14:15 ..........................Perfection
In the first episode of The Wonder Of Dogs, Kate Humble, Steve Leonard and a team of canine experts will reveal the innermost secrets of man’s best friend, by contrasting the anatomy of different breeds from their vastly different body sizes, to the hairiness of their coats and the shape of their paws. How can a single species come in so many surprising shapes and sizes? This is the wonder of dogs. They reveal the origins of some of the most iconic breeds and how much dogs have become such an integral part of our lives. Over the centuries dogs have been cross bred to perform specialist tasks, from burrowing into dens to retrieving game. Historian Ruth Goodman travels to the Guisachan Estate in the Scottish Highlands to meet hundreds of Golden Retrievers and their owners, at the ancestral home of this popular dog. Ruth discovers how far some dog lovers are prepared to go for some very well-groomed breeds such as the pampered Poodle and the Komondor with its dreadlocks. The series is set in a typical English village and the team investigate the pedigrees of some of the village dogs using DNA science. Is the Cockerpoo what it claims to be? The team looks at the extraordinary genetics that allows dogs to come in so many different shapes, and how selective breeding is being used to change the features of the great British Bulldog.

But first, he had to understand what happens to food when you cook it different ways. Once you know what is happening when you roast, fry, poach etc then you can cook anything. This episode is all about baking; cooking in the dry heat of the oven. Raymond loves the beautiful colours and flavours it gives food. But for him baking is for much more than bread and cakes, it is good for meats, cheese and even seafood. That is where he starts this show, with simple, delicious scallops baked in their own shells. Then there is an extraordinary salt baked leg of lamb that makes Raymond very happy and a double dessert treat: first a restaurant masterpiece, an exquisite pistachio souffle with a bitter cocoa sorbet inside, then a crowdpleasing flourless chocolate cake.

The Fried Chicken Shop Channel 4, 23:05
After the success of the one-off Cutting Edge documentary, The Fried Chicken Shop: Life in a Day, Channel 4 returns to Rooster Spot in Clapham, south London, for a three-part series that delves even deeper into the world of fried chicken, the staff who serve it and the huge variety of customers who buy it. All walks of life cross in the Fried Chicken Shop as people tell their life stories, friendships are formed and love and laughter spill out into the early hours. In this first episode Rooster Spot is a hub for love and relationships. Shop workers Imran and Harris talk about their bigger ambitions and the friendship they have formed since they both moved from Pakistan, and Harris declares his budding love for an Italian waitress.
Educating Yorkshire Channel 4, 21:00
The warm, humorous documentary series that explores life in a secondary school at the heart of a diverse northern community continues. This episode focuses on two strikingly similar boys: one nearing his final year and another who's starting out at secondary school. Both are exploding with energy and charm but, to their teachers' frustration, neither of them is particularly interested in learning.

Get your game-face on OVER the last few years, Tenerife has seen a lot of changes within the entertainment scene. Not only at the sharp end - on stage, where the magic happens - but also at the venues.
There is no longer a saturation of bars offering live shows, but those who are getting it right are thriving. And so are the true pros on the circuit. What is it to “get it right”, though? A number of factors will always make an audience return, and it’s not all connected to what happens on stage. But it is connected! You can have the most successful, entertaining artiste on the stage, but if the sound system is not up to scratch all artistes will struggle to be their best. If the venue staff are unhappy and just going
through the motions, this will be picked up by the audience. As will the toilets not being clean, the stock not replenished consistently, together with tired décor and poor seating. All these dynamics matter. All too often, venues look at what’s happening on the stage as the sole reason for why their business is failing.
The need to compete for customers in bars is now a fact, as the owners are discovering. It’s happening in venues from every angle, and those owners are now paying more attention to their sound and light, dressing stages with curtains and updating music libraries regularly. The latter is so important now that music is so readily available on one’s smart phone. No matter where you are in the world, you can listen to anything. There is nothing more disappointing for a customer than to be told: “Sorry, we haven’t got that one yet.” It seems that owners are all upping their
game this year. It’s as if many of them have been waiting for Tenerife to get better – just like that - and now are starting to realise that it’s not going to happen unless sweeping improvements are made. Because entertainers are usually first in the firing line, they have started to evolve first, from reinvention and new styling to complete overhauls and genre adjustments to their repertoires. The entertainment scene is stronger than ever right now, with so many new artistes arriving this year - and 90% of them doing very well. Existing artistes have stepped out of their comfort zone, putting in new songs, trying new things and creating new shows. The professionals are starting to venture back to tread the boards again, and our Island is beginning to buzz again. It was stated on this page at the beginning of 2013 that this was going to be a good year. Well, as we head towards the winter season, it is shaping up to exceed all expectations, especially with the new injection of enthusiasm, coupled with the exceptional talent Tenerife seems to be attracting. It’s time to get your game-face on!
THE Nominees have now been published, but the race to secure an award is not over yet. If you took the time to nominate someone, then I’m sure you will also be voting.
These artistes need your support now, so if you are a resident on the Island and enjoy such a variety of entertainment, or you are on holiday and would like to contribute, then all you need to do is visit the Facebook page “Tenerife Entertainment Awards”. Simply leave a private message with the category and the name of the nominee for whom you would like to vote. Other ways to vote are listed in this issue on page 16/17 along with all the nominees and their categories. Good luck to everyone who has been nominated. See you all at The TEAs on 13th October.
LAST Friday Tramps hosted the start of “One Big Getaway”, an event organised by Ket and Vanessa from Tenerife Sunshine, which brings over 300 party animals to Tenerife. Each night, a different venue hosts the madness and the first night of the week-long party started at the King of Clubs! Tramps is a popular venue with a buzzing atmosphere anyway. Now, add that to the 300 people who are part of the same organised group, enjoying discounted drinks, and the uber-talented DJs in Tramps, plus and the DJs that come along with One Big Getaway - like the mighty Tom Zanetti and his co-pilots - and you will have the same electric atmosphere that was evident last Friday. The difference here is that OBG brings so many out here together and makes them feel part of something exclusive. They get to know each other much quicker because they are all part of the same thing. This also gels the atmosphere faster, and last Friday it felt a little like the UK club experience, mixed 50/50 with what you expect in Tenerife. And that spells bigger measures and pints of vodka and Red Bull for a lot less than the UK price of 12 quid! It’s the all-important ingredients to a top night and the start of a week of party, party, party. All in all, another A1 promotion at Tramps.

Change of direction By Sue McDonald WELL, how quickly this year is going! Once The X Factor starts, you know you are already on the countdown to Christmas.
Gilly and I have thoroughly enjoyed our Summer away from the shop, and, in fact, so much so that we have decided to continue the business in a slightly different format. We have always had a warehouse in Buzanada, and what we have decided to do is to kit that out as a showroom, and then continue working between there and home. Many of our existing clients who now need additional items for their property, or need to reupholster or replace their sofas, for example, have rung us during the Summer, and we’ve been able to proceed with them pretty much as normal. As I said in one of my recent articles, our business has changed from providing complete furnishing packages for people who had bought brandnew, empty apartments or houses, to dealing with existing propertyowners, hundreds of whom furnished with us in the first place. And actually, now that there is so much competition with other
Page 38
furniture shops full of display items, we have decided our business has taken a different turn, and is much more service-based. This means we will come to your property, give you estimates and furnishing ideas free and without obligation. And if we don’t have what you want, we also work in conjunction with the best of those other furniture shops, and we can sort it all out for you! We will continue to provide services such as re-upholstery, curtains and small pieces of furniture and fittings. Therefore, we do not need to have a big display area, or be based in one location waiting for clients to visit us. And because of the service element of our business, we usually visit the clients’ house in any case. Even when we sell a new sofa, we always try to call round to the purchaser’s house with the material sample prior to delivery to make sure the colours are a good match with the floor and the surroundings. That’s because furniture can look very
different in the shop, both colour and sizewise, than it will in your home, and mistakes can be expensive! So we have decided to continue working from home, using the warehouse to show the quality of our reupholstery work and the standard of the new sofa beds, for example, as and when necessary. This means we will have more time available for home visits (as well as keeping up to date with Jeremy Kyle), and will also be able to be more competitive on our pricing. Coupled with that, Gilly and I have decided to put our many years of experience here in Tenerife to good use, and we are now also working on Deco Nuevo services ( w w w. f a c e b o o k . c o m / deconuevoservices), which can offer advice, information and recommendations to short or long-term Tenerife visitors about a huge variety of matters. So that’s certainly enough to keep us out of trouble for the time being! We are still available on the shop number below - just give us a ring to see if we can help you!
Apple banking on its ‘fingerprint’ iPhone APPLE has included a fingerprint reader in one of its two revamped iPhone handsets. Company chief Tim Cook confirmed rumours that the highend iPhone 5S would be equipped with a fingerprint scanner to unlock the device and end the days of passwords. He promised the cheaper iPhone 5C would come with “all the great technology that customers have loved” on its previous models. But analysts said it was “nowhere near” as cheap as some had predicted. The “budget” version - launched at a time when, arguably, Apple faces stiffer global competition than ever - will be an obvious rival to some of the lowcost gadgets sold by the firm’s major competitors. The iPhone 5C costs £63 over a two-year contract, or a one-off payment of £469. The 5C, with its bright colours and lower price tag, is designed to attract those buyers in China who favour cheaper android smart-
phones. And analysts say winning over the Chinese consumer is the key to Apple’s continued success. However, it is still far pricier than alternative models. The iPhone 5S in China will cost £549 according to Apple’s China website. Initial polls suggest that it means the battle in China isn’t yet won. In a survey on Sina. com.cn, a Chinese webprovider similar to Yahoo!, 88.4% of those polled said the price for the iPhone 5C was too high, and just 2.6% said they would buy one. The company has, so
far, failed to sign a deal with China’s largest mobile network, China Mobile. With 745 million customers in China, it is the world’s largest mobile communications provider, and yet none of those customers can use an iPhone. A deal is rumoured to be close but, until it comes, Apple’s growth in China will remain limited. The 5C is billed as “more fun” than any iPhone yet. It will be plastic with a range of five vivid colours. And for young Chinese consumers, who seem to buy increasinglygaudy plastic covers for their phones, this should be an attractive selling point. Jason Jenkins, editor of technology site CNET, is far from impressed with the new model, saying: “Apple has made a play for the ‘geeks it lost’ to Android with the 5S. “Android phones, like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One, are known for containing very fast processors, while iPhones have been left behind.”

Hey, good looking... By Carl from Robot
HAVING your hair looking its best is not, in my opinion, that difficult a task.
Keeping up to a basic “look” isn’t going to break the bank, so why is it that some people make it look like hard work? I have certain “hair rules” which, I believe, seem to work. *If your hair is tied up in a ponytail all day and night, then maybe it’s time you thought of an easier style to make it look good quickly. *If your hair’s not got one straight line to it and looks broken, I know it’s a trauma but it’s time to remove it. *If your hair has three inches of roots showing, then maybe it’s time to colour it. *When did you last get a compliment about your hair? Can’t remember? I’ll say no more. Hair isn’t a “thing” but an accessory. It speaks volumes about you and your style. It’s the third thing people judge you on after your eyes and your mouth. I can’t help but walk around looking at hair, after all, it is my profession. Good or bad, I see it all day, every day. Imagine bumping into your stylist in the street. Could you walk on by knowing that he or she were checking you out and knowing
Page 40
Balancing those hyperactive kids also that your hair still looked great, three weeks after your salon visit? If in that period it’s not looking that good, however, then it’s time to have a re-think about your hair. Last week in the salon I “made-over” four clients, transforming their hair totally, and one lady even filled up because she was so happy with the result. But to me it’s my job, making hair effortless to do, yet looking good until your next salon visit. So if you’re feeling a little frayed around the
edges and no one has given you a compliment about your hair in the last few years, then maybe it’s time you gave your stylist a call. You may not want a total change, but speaking to your stylist about modifying some aspect may make a difference. And remember, this is what we are here for. Years ago, one large salon chain in the UK used the slogan, “If you don’t look good, we don’t look good”, and they are my sentiments exactly. Use, don’t lose, your salon!
ABNORMALITIES in the inner ear might actually lead to hyperactivity, which could be controlled in children.
Behavioural abnormalities are thought to originate in the brain, but researchers have found that inner-ear dysfunction can directly cause neurological changes. It means that hyperactivity in kids with innerear disorders might be dampened down with medication that tackles the related area of the brain. For years, scientists have noted that many children and adolescents with severe inner/ ear disorders - particularly disorders affecting both hearing and balance - also have behavioural problems, including hyperactivity. Until a new study by the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in New York, however, no one had been able to determine whether the two were linked. Study leader Dr Jean Hebert, a professor at the College said: “Our study provides the first evidence that a sensory impairment, such as inner-ear dysfunction, can induce specific molecular changes in the brain that cause maladaptive behaviours tra-
ditionally considered to originate exclusively in the brain, “The inner ear consists of two structures, the cochlea (responsible for hearing) ad the vestibular system (responsible for balance).” Inner-ear disorders are typically caused by genetic defects, but can also result from infection or injury. The idea for a study came about when a Ph.D. student at the college of Medicine noticed that some mice in Dr Hebert’s laboratory were in a state of nearcontinual movement, chasing their tails. Further investigation revealed they had severe problems with their ears and were profoundly deaf, reports the journal Science. The researchers established that the animals’ inner-ear problems were down to a mutation in a gene which is also found in humans. To determine whether the mutation was linked to the animals’ hyperactivity, the scientists took healthy mice and selectively deleted the gene from either the inner ear, various parts of the brain that control movement or the entire central nervous system. “To our surprise, it was only when we deleted the gene from the inner ear that we observed increased movement,”
said Dr Hebert. As a result of their findings, the researchers suggest that innerear defects cause abnormal functioning of a central brain area that controls movement. Tests revealed that increased levels of two proteins were involved in a signalling pathway that controls the action of neuro-transmitters. The increased levels were seen in the central area of the brain controlling movement, and not in other forebrain regions. To discover whether this caused the abnormal increase movement, the mice that had the gene removed were given an injection to inhibit the protein. This led to activity returning to normal. According to the researchers, the findings suggest that hyperactivity in children with inner-ear disorders might be controllable with medications that directly or indirectly inhibit the same pathway in the central area of the brain. Doctor Herbert added: “Our study also raises the intriguing possibility that other sensory impairments not associated with inner-ear defects could cause or contribute to psychiatric or motor disorders that are now considered exclusively of cerebral origin.”

Deadly lung cancer is down to smoking
LUNG conditions are the cause of one in 10 of all deaths in Europe - and smoking IS a major factor.
A British lung charity says lung disease kills one in four in the UK. Yet it does not receive priority when it comes to prevention, treatment or research funding. A new a report from the European Respiratory Society says deaths from lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) will rise over the next 20 years because of past smoking rates. The data, presented in a publication called the European Lung White Book, uses the latest facts from the World Health Organisation and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control to analyse trends in lung disease. In the WHO European Region, which stretches from the Atlantic to Central Asia, it found that the four most- commonly-fatal lung diseases - lower respiratory infections (including pneumonia), COPD, lung cancers and tuberculosis accounted for a 10th of all deaths. Among the 28
European Union countries, however, these diseases account for one in eight deaths, says the White Book. Only Belgium (117 deaths per 100,000 population), Denmark, Hungary and Ireland had higher death rates from lung disease than the UK, at 112 per 100,000 people. But the report said the proportion of total deaths attributed to a lung condition is highest in the UK and Ireland, a figure which the British Lung Foundation puts at one in four people. The data in the White
Book describes tobacco smoking as “the most important health hazard in Europe” and it maintains that smoking is the main preventable cause of death from illnesses such as lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and coronary artery disease. While smoking rates in the UK have fallen significantly since the 1970s, the report says the long-term effects of those habits are keeping cases of lung cancer and COPD at high levels. This means the proportion of deaths
caused by lung conditions is likely to remain stable over the next 20 years, even though a decrease in lung infections is predicted. Since 2000, the NHS has offered free counselling and drugs to people who want to stop smoking, which results in more people trying to give up the weed. In conclusion, Prof Francesco Blasi, president of the European Respiratory Society, said of the White Book data: “Both the prevention
and treatment of lung diseases will need to be improved if their impact on longevity, quality of life of individuals and economic burden on society are to be reduced in Europe and worldwide.” Prof Richard Hubbard, from the British Lung Foundation, says the report doesn’t tell the full story of the burden of respiratory disease in
the UK. “Diseases like lung cancer and COPD do kill tens of thousands of people each year, but there are over 40 different types of lung disease,” he said. “Taken altogether, it is likely that around a quarter of deaths in the UK each year are from respiratory disease - as many are killed by all non-lung-related forms of cancer put together.” He said one reason for the UK’s high death rates for diseases like lung cancer suggested that patients were visiting their doctor too late. Prof Hubbard added that treatment and prevention of lung disease was not given enough priority by NHS England, and researchers were not given enough funding. “For instance, investment in lung cancer research totals around one-third of that allocated to breast cancer, half that allocated to bowel cancer and less than half the leukaemia allocation, even though it kills more people per year than all three put together,” he stressed.
Painkillers worse than heroin! PA I NK I LL E R S are responsible for more annual deaths in the UK than cocaine and heroin, according to figures released this week.
It is believed that nearly 1.5 million patients are hooked on benzodiazepine tranquilisers. And new data from the Office for National Statistics revealed that
807 people died last year after taking tranquilisers and painkillers, compared with 718 who fell victim to heroin and cocaine. It suggests that Britain is getting hooked on prescription drugs, and Cathryn Kemp, author of Painkiller Addict: From Wreckage To Redemption, agrees, saying: “We are a medicated nation.” One 51-year-old woman said she had been prescribed diazepam for more than 13 years, but finally managed to
13th September - 19th September 2013
get off the drug with the help of advice she found on the internet. “The drug wrecked my life,” she said. Critics blame doctors for over-prescribing drugs, and they fear Britain is at risk of following the US, where more than 16,000 people a year die from painkiller-prescription overdoses. Celebrity victims in America include model Anna Nicole Smith in 2007, film-star Heath Ledger in 2008 and pop idol Michael Jack-
son in 2009. Labour MP Jim Dobbin, chairman of the all-party group on involuntary tranquiliser addiction, said: “Lives are being destroyed and people are being left without the help and support they need.” But the Department of Health denied being complacent, saying it had endorsed an agreement earlier this year by medical professional bodies on how to address addiction.

Adeje Artisan market
Food in Brief
British Food Fortnight
Hundreds of activities are taking place across the country during British Food Fortnight. Now in its twelfth year it’s even more popular than ever. The 2013 campaign theme is “Bring Home the Harvest”. There are more activities than ever before for people to get involved, with a particular emphasis on schools, communities and young people. As always there is the event’s annual drive to encourage shops, pubs and restaurants to run British food promotions during the Fortnight – supporting British food.
Olive Oil price differences Spanish consumer association FACUA has detected price differences of up to 64% in the price of olive oil.
The smooth variety has increased in price by 40% on average in the last two years, 92 cents more for a one litre plastic container. The association compared fifty-four olive oil brands in six supermarkets and hypermarkets. The study, conducted at Auchan, Carrefour, Dia, Hipercor, Lidl and Mercadona, compared the prices of 165 products in plastic containers or cans of 1 and 5 litres of varieties of extra virgin olive oil, virgin olive oil, intense and smooth. The visits took place on the 29th August.
The Adeje initiative Degusta.me is promoting local cuisine and produce during the September. This weekend as part of the activity there is an Artisan craft and food market taking place from 6pm until midnight on Sunday at CC El Mirador, Adeje. In addition honey, cheese and gofio will be on sale at Gran Sur from today and tomorrow (Saturday) from 10am. “These events have been very well received in previous years” explained councillor Moreira Garcia, who said that “the programme at-
tempts to diversify both in space and supply.” Also, the Ruta de la Tapa, is proving success-
ful, “It began earlier this month and is being very well received,” continued Garcia. Ruta de la Tapa
will continue until the end of September, with 63 restaurants, bars and cafes taking part.
Gravy Train
Eight key players have pledged their support for British Roast Dinner Week, sponsored by Knorr Gravy and supported by Colman’s. Yes Peas!, Love Your Greens, British Onions and the Sustainable Restaurant Association have joined existing supporters, in the quest to get roasts on the menu every day of the week - not just on Sundays - between 30 September and 6th October 2013. Baby foods not so nutritious BABY foods made by such companies as Cow & Gate, Heinz and Ella’s Kitchen have far fewer nutrients than home-made meals.
And jars of food by the same companies have also been found to contain high levels of sugar. Glasgow University researchers believe children would get half as much energy and protein from “convenience” food than they would from an equivalentsized meal cooked at home. The research team wrote in the journal Archives Of Disease In Childhood: “The UK infant food market mainly supplies sweet, soft, spoonable foods, targeted from the age of four months. “Most products are ready-made spoonable foods that are no more energy-dense than formula milk and are, gen-
erally, much less nutrient-dense than homemade foods.” The study said weaning foods “would not serve the intended purpose” of giving a baby extra nutrients, or a range of tastes and textures. The researchers also discovered that some foods are being promoted for use at the age of four months, contrary to official guidance. Professor Charlotte
13th September - 19th September 2013
Wright, who wrote the report, told Sky News: “The irony about these weaning foods is that they are just giving more of the same. “Mothers think they’re going on to something bigger and different and more mature. But actually, they’re providing very similar nutrient content to milk - and, before the age of six months, that’s all babies need.” The products analysed
by the research team were manufactured by Heinz, Boots, Cow & Gate, Hipp Organic, Organix and Ella’s Kitchen. Heinz told Sky News: “Generations of parents have trusted Heinz baby foods as safe and nourishing, and which are specially prepared to meet babies’ nutritional needs with recipes that provide the right tastes and textures.” An Ella’s Kitchen
spokeswoman said: “In the United Kingdom, we support breast-feeding for the optimal time of six months. However, it may not always be possible or appropriate. “As the study acknowledges, commercial weaning food is created to complement the nutrition gained from baby’s milk. “Ella’s Kitchen creates its products with this exact goal. Our products are 100% organic, Soil Association approved and are made following European regulations.” Organix chief Anna Rosier told Sky News: “We support that breast-feeding to six months is the ideal form of first nutrition, and we ensure all of our stage 1 packaging contains the WHO guidelines. “We are also aware that some parents decide to wean their little ones before then. So to support these parents, we make it clear what foods could be suitable. “All of our foods are complementary to
breast-feeding, and we adhere to the regulations for complementary foods for babies. “We do not make foods with the purpose of replacing breast milk as the primary source of nutrition before six months. “We do not fortify our foods with vitamins and minerals, unless required to by EU food regulations, as the fortification of food is not permitted under organic rules.” The DoH recommends a gradual transition to solids, starting with cereals, vegetables and fruits, before moving on to proteins. It recommends babies still continue to receive breast milk or a pint of formula a day while they are being weaned, up to their first birthday. The British Specialist Nutrition Association, which represents babyfood manufacturers, recommends that parents seek advice from a healthcare professional when considering weaning.

Wheelchair-bound, but still bumping along in Tenerife! Part 1 by Andrew Herron-Adams
MY wife Izabela and I have always loved Tenerife, returning as often as possible.
On all our trips, we were aware of the many people being transported around on electric scooters and wheelchairs. But I don’t think I spent one minute considering how they coped. Four years ago, I was the victim of a road accident, and now I am one of those people who rely on my powered wheelchair and my devoted wife. To say our lives changed is an understatement; everything changed, and we had to find a new way to live. And how we could go back to Tenerife. Suddenly, from seasoned travellers who had all the confidence in the world, we had to rethink the whole experience, down to the smallest detail. How would I get through the airport? Would I be allowed to get on a plane? What about my wheelchair? How could I get to the loo on the plane? What about getting to the hotel at the other end? The list was endless. Finally, we booked a two-week holiday in June with a major tour operator as we felt we needed their expertise for us to cope. We paid hundreds of pounds extra for specially-adapted rooms in a wheelchairaccessible hotel in Los Cristianos, and our trip was a revelation. We loved being back in Tenerife, of course, and all my worries regarding the plane were unfounded. But all the preparation with the tour operator was an expensive waste of time. Even though we had paid to have an adapted room on the ground floor (obviously), we were put on the fourth floor in a non-adapted room with a walk-in
Page 44
shower - not much help if you can’t walk! But we were on holiday and we were determined to enjoy it - and we did! We now return twice or three times a year, spending up to a month each time. We have also gained the confidence to rent private accommodation, book our own flights, and arrange special transit from the airport to the resort. And always self-catering. So, although we expose ourselves to almost anything that can go wrong, we have all the opportunities for some fantastic memories. Having just returned from our latest after a wonderful 28-day adventure in Costa Adeje, I wanted to share some of the fun, and frustration of our stay with readers. Some may be local businesses who might recognise themselves; some might be people considering a trip themselves. Arriving at Tenerife airport two hours late, were ready to get to the resort, dump our bags and see some old friends. We had booked a onebedroom apartment in the Santa Maria complex direct with the apartment owner, Denise Hammond. We had also booked a second apartment next
door for our daughter Sarah, her partner Dale and the four grandkids, to share the first two weeks with us. The first five adapted airport taxis could not accommodate my powered chair, but finally we got in one and were on our way. Hooray. On arrival at the Santa Maria Apart hotel, we checked the apartment and it was fine. Bags dumped, a quick change and we were out. Things had changed a bit from our last trip; new faces in some local spots, but plenty of regulars to greet. Turning left out of the hotel, several bars and restaurants line the lefthand side of the street, almost all either up nine steps or down nine steps. Ignoring the many PRs trying to tempt us up or down stairs to their respective restaurants (even though they didn’t know how I could manage it), we finally find a nice cocktail bar
at street level. And what a pleasure it is to be back in Tenerife, a cold drink in hand as the sun sets. A few drinks later and we set off back to our holiday home, via the minefield of PRs! A good night’s sleep and we are all ready to check out Adeje. Playa de la Pinta A wonderful little bay, directly down from the Santa Maria. Lovely sandy beach with some umbrellas and sunbeds. Half the bay is a car-free promenade lined with several bars, shops and restaurants. Perfect for our crowd of eight. The kids are at home on the beach (of course). Dale is happy to regress into childhood and do the Dad bit with sandcastles, etc, which leaves Izabela, Sarah and me to take care of the important things, like food and drinks. Unlike pre-wheelchair days, selecting a spot to stop for refreshments takes a touch more planning. Some of the
bars have a huge terrace out front, cluttered with so many tables and chairs that there is no hope of me gaining access. Smaller bars are delighted to re-arrange their whole business to afford me room to enter, possibly because a party of eight is always going to be an attractive proposition to any bar, although I believe the local people are genuinely warmhearted, doing what comes naturally to them. But most do not have accessible toilets, The El Ferry bar/restaurant, about halfway along the traffic-free promenade being the exception. They have modern, purpose-built facilities, mixed with good food, reasonably-priced drinks - and Jean. Before you get to El Ferry, you pass several similar bars that are inviting, and I found myself tempted to try a few out - popping into El Ferry if I needed the loo. A bit cheeky, but it was never a problem. Staff would still move all the chairs and tables for me to use their loo when I was buying my drinks next door! That was really kind and generous of them, and we returned often to show our appreciation. The second half of the bay has access for
vehicles, which means that a road separates the beach from the shops and bars. Naturally, the kerb is several inches high and out of bounds for my chair, even with my kerb-climber. It meant I had to travel to the end of the bay and crossing over to come all the way back, only to repeat the journey in reverse order when returning. However, Dale found a solution, converting some abandoned timber into a decent ramp for me. Playa de Fanabe What a lovely beach, with a promenade lined with a large number of shops, bars and restaurants on one level, complemented by the upper level of much larger restaurants overlooking the ocean. You can travel from the Pinta Beach by staying on the upper level, or by dropping down on to the prom level. You can even travel across the sand on wooden walkways- A bit bumpy for me, but at least I am on the beach. On the promenade is the tourist information office which, I thought, would be a great source of useful information for wheelchair-users. But aside from having some disabled toilets close by, which charge 50 cents, they could not offer any information regarding disabled facilities in Adeje. A poor reflection on the priorities of the local authorities. When I enquired politely why there was so little interest in considering the disabled for Adeje’s dayto-day activities I was, surprisingly, offered a complaint form. Not what I expected, but it made me think that, perhaps, the local council simply needed a few prods to make some small changes which would make a lot of difference. I will, perhaps, deliver the form to the Mayor personally soon because we are now back in Adeje for the whole of September. Continued next week

Ford must Focus more! By Jav IT looks as though Ford will have to go back to the drawing board if they want to ensure their new Focus Electric car is a real goer!
Although it is an obviously important step for Ford, it won’t find many buyers in its current form. It simply doesn’t have its rivals’ range and practicality, yet it costs more to buy - and the handling has been compromised by the electric conversion. And, sadly for Ford, the Hybrid Mondeo is likely to be much more popular. The Focus Electric is the manufacturer’s first pure electric production car and has already been on sale in US showrooms for two years. But this is the first chance European buyers will get to try emissionsfree driving in such a familiar five-door package.
Power comes from two packs of lithium-ion batteries: one stored under the rear seats and the other in the boot. Together, they weigh 300kg and give the Focus a range of around 100 miles for every full charge. Despite the extra bulk, however, straight-line performance is reasonably brisk, with the electric Focus recording a 0-62mph time of just 11 seconds, and delivering its 250Nm of torque instantly. In fact, there is so
much pace that the steering wheel can squirm in your hands during acceleration. Top speed is limited to 85mph to preserve the battery, but you can reach and maintain motorway speeds without fuss - and in nearsilence! Unlike the standard model, though, the brakes feel grabby, and selecting the ‘L’ on the gearbox to maximise energy harvested by the brakes can make this Ford hard to drive smoothly around town.
A key difference between the Focus EV and purpose-built electric models like the Renault ZOE and BMW i3 is obviously that the Ford wasn’t designed to carry large battery packs. As a result, the suspension feels a lot firmer over bumps. The chassis does a reasonable job of coping, but you’re always aware of the added ballast over the rear axle. Recharging from a standard threepin household plug takes around 10 hours, and the battery pack
means that the boot shrinks from the standard 316 litres to a rather less practical 190 litres. The interior is virtually identical to any of the other Focus models, apart from a set of unique dials. And a single speedo is flanked by two smart digital screens that record your driving data and energy consumption. Standard kit is equivalent to a Titanium-spec Focus, so included are the high-performance Sony DAB stereo, and part-leather seats.
But that really isn’t enough to merit the £33,500 asking price. What brings that home is that even after the £5,000 Government electric-car grant, it still makes the Focus roughly the same price as an i3 Range Extender. And that is lighter, better to drive and has a 200-mile range. Ouch! It means that the Ford boffins really will have to look to their laurels and return to that clichéd drawing board for fresh inspiration to give the Focus a genuine jolt.
Jaguar announce birth of their baby! JAGUAR have confirmed that they will launch a “baby” saloon in 2015 to rival the BMW 3-series.
They say it will be “the most advanced, efficient and refined sports sedan in its class”. The new model will be based on the firm’s long-awaited modular platform architecture, dubbed iQ[Al] and will be powered by Jaguar’s new family of petrol and diesel engines built, at the company’s new facility in Wolverhampton. The new engine lineup, plus the vehicles’ new lightweight construction, will enable Jaguar to offer the new C/D segment saloon in sub-100g/km variants, as well as performance models capable of more than 186mph. Adrian Hallmark,
Jaguar’s Global Brand Director, said of the new platform: “It provides flexibility to develop a broad and more accessible range of Jaguars, which will all deliver efficiency and driving pleasure to a whole new generation of Jaguar owners.” He added: “The first product to be built on the new architecture will be delivered in 2015. It will be an all-new, mid-sized, premium sports saloon, priced just below the existing XF. “Jaguar will deliver a sports saloon with an unparalleled breadth of performance and efficiency - a true Jaguar and the car that will revolutionise this segment.” It is anticipated that the new saloon will spawn other variants, including a coupe and an estate.

Barca Boys show their class again By Roscoe
CD Tenerife 2 Barcelona B 2 Eibar 1 CD Tenerife 0 LAST week I urged you to watch this match as Barca could field a team of potential superstars.
I’m not sure we saw that on show at the Heliodoro, but we certainly saw a bright future for some of the kids. Hand on heart, it’s been a long time since I’ve enjoyed a match so much. Barca B are at the start of a new cycle and this project will bear fruit only in 18 months. They were missing a handful of players because of international duty, but still put on a tremendous show. In many ways, Tenerife had nothing to gain - apart from the obvious three points. The visitors had an average age of 18 and, at times, they ran rings Position 1º CD Mirandés
and had “a word”. The draw was a fair outcome to a match you could easily have split into four sections. Tenerife were in total charge at halftime after a solid 45 minutes. With Aridane making his first start of the season, the “front four” was the one that played most of last season. And it showed. The interaction was natural, the runs telegraphed and, while
around the Tenerife Old Boys. Sure, they ran out of a puff a bit at the end. But boy, they must have been annoying for the lads in white. On more than one occasion, I was hoping the old heads like Ruiz, Ricardo or Suso would give their opponent a slap. I would have! In fact, there was one moment as the ref was ball-watching that Ruiz grabbed Espinosa Points 10

he spent most of his time with his back to goal, Aridane was an outlet. Rivero continues to impress in central midfield, and as “quarterback” he was spraying passes all over the pitch. For their part, Barca looked a long way from home. Their attacks were rushed, the tikataka non-existent and, though they had some good possession, there was little for goalie Sergio Aragoneses to do. Tenerife’s opener came during their best spell of possession. They were awarded a strange obstruction free-kick just inside the Barca area. The five-man wall was well placed but, with a surgeon’s precision, Luismi bent the ball around the obstruction and past Masip into the top corner. It was some goal! Moments later, Cristo Martin’s thunderbolt was well saved by Masip and at half-time, the Tenerife tails were up. But Barca hit back just 28 seconds into the restart. The ineffective Calvet was replaced by Denis Suarez, who joined just two weeks ago from Manchester City. His first touch released Espinosa,
who couldn’t believe the space he had. He stroked the ball past Aragoneses with the Tenerife defence still in the dressing room, polishing off their Bovril. It was woeful and a couple of minutes later it got worse. Another sweeping Barca move caught the defence out. Speed Kills, they say, and Tenerife’s tortoiselike defence were found wanting. The excellent Dani Nieto netted his third of the season and suddenly, the hosts looked to be in deep trouble. Yet they managed to weather the storm and, thanks to some bold substitutions, they dragged themselves back into the contest. Sanz and Cristo were hooked for Ricardo and Aday, and the effect was instantaneous. Ricardo rolled back the years and grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. He was everywhere, tackling like a fisherman and linking well with the wide players. The crowd sensed a comeback and Barca’s kids were shellshocked. The excellent Bagnack was breaking up all the good moves or clearing the corners. But eventually, the
goal came. A sweeping Tenerife move ended with Suso finding Aridane, who couldn’t miss from 12 yards. Well I say couldn’t. His shot did get a deflection, but it was always going in. This set up a Grandstand finale which, at times, resembled an oldfashioned English cuptie. But with the equaliser achieved, manager Alvaro Cervera reverted to type and ensured that Tenerife kept what they had. They defended deeper and deeper and this just invited the visitors forward. The keenness of youth coursed through the Barca veins as they went for the winner. Thankfully, it never came. Tenerife earned a perfectly acceptable point and retained their unbeaten home record, while those of us who were there will surely be keeping the programme to show off one day. Canarian Weekly ratings CD Tenerife: Aragoneses 7, Moyano 7, Bruno 7, Ruiz 6, Llorente 6, Sanz 5 (Ricardo 54min 7), Rivero 7 (Ayoze 65min 6), Suso 6, Loro 7, Martin 6 (Aday 54min 5) Aridane 6. Barcelona B: Masip 7, Patric 6, Planas 6, Ilie 7, Bagnack 9, Roman 7, Calvet 5 (Suarez 46min 7), Lucas 7 (Campins 77min 5), Sandro 6 (Samper 69min 7); Nieto 8, Espinosa 7. *Tenerife crashed out of the Spanish Cup in midweek, losing 1-0 at Eibar. They played well but never really threatened. The defeat brought a shrug of the shoulders from fans, who will be more interested in the visit to Real Zaragoza tomorrow (Saturday). They came down from La Liga last season and have had a horror start, scoring just one goal. They look a side bereft of confidence and they are there for the taking!

A night to remember! WHAT a cracking Finals Night of thrills and spills for the Oasis Fm Darts League.
A total of 11 finals were played in front of a handsome turnout of supporters, who cheered to the rafters. Indeed, like a song that you can’t get out of your head, most of us went home shouting: “Come on the Gaffers!” Actually, the Gaffers B lads kicked off proceedings in the Division 1 Trebles Final. And with their battle cry echoing around the Nauta Bar, Neil, Paul and Jack claimed the first silverware of the evening with a 3-0 victory over Chipeque’s Lol, Neil and Bryn. That was the first of three final appearances for Lol - and, sadly, the first of his three defeats! He teamed up with Neil for the Doubles, where they faced Bar 180’s fa-
ther-and-son pairing of Arny and Carl. This was an edgeof-the-seat match which either pair could have won. The nerves seemed to be getting to young Carl, but Arny kept plugging away and hit the winning dart to nick the trophy by 3 legs to 2. Yet more drama in the Division One Singles saw Lol facing Gaffers B man Paul. At 2-1 up, it looked as though Lol would put his previous disappointments behind him. But it wasn’t to be. Paul raised his game and took the cup with an emotional 3-2 win – a cue for more Gaffers’ chanting! The Ladies’ finals were also well supported, especially in the Trebles, during which a very vocal Playgirls team coaxed their girls to a 2-0 success over the Scruffy Macs trio. The delighted Phoe-
nix Flights’ Doubles pairing of Joan and Maddie came from 1-0 down to beat Jackie and Lynn, of Bar 180. And this year’s Singles champion is Naughty Nautas’ Julie, who triumphed 2-0 against Playgirls’ Nuala. The two Division 2 finals played on the night were all-Emerald Shamrock affairs. And there was no doubt that their star player was former Bar 180’s Gary. He teamed up with Dave to take the Doubles pot from Matt and Wez, and then put in an excellent performance to beat Matt 3-0 in the Singles. A last-minute substitute player for Palms Sports Bar in the Premier League Trebles final would seemingly have made Phoenix Bar triplets Mitch, London and Bubbles favourites. But, the bookies are not always right! The
Palms trio of Tom, Mally and Mario put in a fine display to claim the cup with a 3-0 victory. The Doubles showdown in this section was probably the match of the evening. Dave and Pete, from The Pub, took on the Palms’ Tom and Mario in a seven-leg thriller which went down to the last dart. At three apiece it was anyone’s match. So a big slap on the back for The Pub pairing, who held on to earn a decent-sized piece of silverware to collect on Presentations Night. So, down to the last final of the evening in the shape of the Premier League Singles: Phoenix Bar’s Mitch v Ourplace Naturals’ Nathan. With most of the assembled crowd staying behind to watch, we were treated to a superb display from both players.
A slow start by Mitch and some solid darts by Nathan saw the young man take an early 2-0 lead. But Mitch somehow clawed it back level, and then put the after-burners on to leave his opponent without an answer to his consistent scoring power. A 4-2 win for Mitch then, after this grand finale, but respect to Nathan, who will surely win this trophy one day. Many thanks to all players and supporters for making this fabulous event such a resounding success. And a special mention to our Nauta Bar hosts Ray and Debbie for their excellent hospitality. I am sure they are still shouting “Come on the Gaffers!” FINAL RESULTS Ladies Singles: Julie (Nauta) beat Nuala (Playgirls) Doubles: Joan/Maddie (Phoenix) bt Jackie/ Lynn (Bar 180)
Trebles: Nuala/Rhi/T (Playgirls) bt Rachael/ Lynn/Sharon (Scruffy Macs) Division 2 Singles: Gary (Shamrocks) bt Matt (Shamrocks) Doubles: Gary/Dave (Shamrocks) bt Matt/ Wez (Shamrocks) Trebles: John/Liam/ Rachel (Bar 180) bt Paul/Gary/Matt (Shamrocks) Division 1 Singles: Paul (Gaffers) bt Lol (Chipeque) Doubles: Arny/Carl (Bar 180) bt Lol/Neil (Chipeque) Trebles: Neil/Paul/Jack (Gaffers) bt Lol/Neil/ Bryn (Chipeque) Premier League Singles: Mitch (Phoenix) bt Nathan (Ourplace) Doubles: Dave/Pete (The Pub) bt Tom/ Mario (Palms) Trebles: Tom/Mally/ Mario (Palms) bt Bubbles/Mitch/London (Phoenix)

NADAL, THE HARD MAN Sport In Brief OF TENNIS! Tour of Britain for Wiggins FOLLOWING its extensive coverage of this year’s Tour de France, ITV4 will screen live coverage and daily highlights of the Tour of Britain, the nation’s biggest pro cycle race.
It starts on Sunday in Peebles and ends on 22nd September in central London. Some of cycling’s biggest names are expected to compete, including 2012 Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins and the sprinter Mark Cavendish.
Bale’s Real beginning
GARETH BALE, who cost Real Madrid a world-record £86 million from Tottenham, is set to make his debut for the Spanish club on Sunday alongside former Manchester United favourite Cristiano Ronaldo.
Boss axed as Irish flop
THE Republic of Ireland’s fruitless World Cup qualifying campaign has led to veteran manager Giovanni Trappattoni. being axed after five years. Roy Keane, still regarded as a traitor by many Irishmen after deserting the squad at their World Cup training base before the start of the 2002 event, is an outside bet. Former Northern Ireland star Martin O’Neill is favourite to take over from the 73-year-old Italian.
England wiped out by rain
ENGLAND’S second ODI against the Australian cricketers at Edgbaston on Wednesday was rained off, after they had lost three early wickets, leaving them 1-0 down with two to play.
Brownlee boys showdown
THE Brownlee brothers Alistair and Jonny go head to head for the World Triathlon crown in Hyde Park on Sunday. Big brother Alistair, 25, and older by two years, is reigning Olympic champion, while Jonny is defending his World title.
Amir aiming so high
AMIR KHAN could face 36-year-old Floyd Mayweather if the unbeaten American superstar defeats Saul Avarez in Vegas tomorrow (Saturday) for his WBA and WBC world light-middleweight crowns.
Mayweather, who has won all his 44 fights and is a five-weight world champ is rated the world’s finest. But Avarez is unbeaten in 43, and 13 years younger!

RAFA NADAL has secured his second US Open crown, beating World No1 Novak Djokovic in four sets and claiming the crown Britain’s Andy Muray won last year.
It was the Spaniard’s 13th Grand Slam title, beating the Serb 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in just over three hours. Nadal pushed hard in a brutal slugging match, during which both players displayed the best tennis of this year’s event. He dominated the first set, only to see the tide change quickly in the second set as his closest rival took control. A 54-shot rally on break-point in the sixth game all but handed the set to Djokovic, who then appeared to be well in charge of the third. But Nadal clawed his way back from 0-40 down at 4-4to grab the
initiative again, claim the third set and race through the fourth for his second US Open title. The dazzling Mallorcan has won six of his last seven matches against Djokovic, after losing seven singles matches in a row against him last year. Nadal, acknowledged as the undisputed King of Clay, is now being heralded as the King of
the Hardcourts, with an unbeaten run of 22 matches on the surface this year as he closes in on the Serb’s No1 spot. His comeback from a seven-month injury break is being described as miraculous, and Nadal said: “Having this success is unbelievable. I never expected this. “Novak is an amazing player and he brings my tennis up to an amazing
level. I don’t know how I beat him.” Only Roger Federer and Pete Sampras have more Grand Slam titles than Nadal, who now looks even more likely to close in on those records. As for Wimbledon champion Murray, who had such high hopes of retaining the title he won last year to claim his first Grand Slam, he was blown away in the quarterfinals by Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 after a disappointing performance. But Serena Williams, like the true champion she is, won her fifth US Open title and second in a row, with a 7-5, 6-7, 6-1 success against second-ranked Victoria Azarenka. Williams served for the match in the second set but failed to overcome an attack of nerves and was broken twice. But she blasted her close rival 6-1 in the third set to claim her 17th career Grand Slam crown.
No Games for Madrid again MADRID has now lost four bids to host the Olympics since 1960, following Japan’s weekend success in winning the 2020 Games for Tokyo. After missing out on the 1972 Games and, subsequently, losing three consecutive bids since the Millennium, another attempt seems unlikely. Spain’s capital faced disappointment in September 2005, 2009 and now 2013, while London secured the Games last year, Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and now Tokyo. Unsurprisingly, in view of the country’s dire economic situation, support for Madrid 2020 was hardly overwhelming
from the Spanish population, particularly those living in the capital. That’s because an investment of at least 915 million euros would be needed, simply to finish off the infrastructure - even though 80% of it is already in place. This would have come from the public coffers of a city which is 7bn euros in debt, with over 25% of its working-age population, and more than half its non-student sector under 30 out of work. Also, Madrid would have had to run the Olympics on a shoestring, which did not convince the IOC (International Olympic Committee).
Boyband star clattered GABRIEL AGBONLAHOR will apologise to Louis Tomlinson after his tackle saw the One Direction star limp away from a charity football match before throwing up. Hundreds of the boyband’s fans among the 60,000 crowd left angry messages on social media following the challenge at
Glasgow’s Celtic Park, with Aston Villa striker Agbonlahor receiving some death threats. The game, featuring a Celtic side who lost 5-3 against a Stiliyan Petrov XI, was a fundraiser for a foundation set up by Petrov, who retired after a year-long battle with leukaemia while at Villa.

Hammers hold their nerve
FIVE of the seven division one matches in the Direct Telecom pool league finished 7-5.
And with the other two decided 8-4, Tuesday showed how tight this league really is. Former champions Palms A have not been at their best so far, but they returned to form in the Torviscas derby with Hammers A in a brilliant match. It was approaching 1.30am when the contest was finally decided after some unbelievable twists and turns. The title-holders were comfortable at 3-0 before this writer beat Fritzel, and the worm started turning. The Hammers threw a few frames in the bin as Palms got back into the match. And when this writer beat Jambo, the scores were level at 4-4. Paul, who was magnificent all night, completed his hattrick of wins over JT to put Hammers back in front, and Jambo then grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat to make it 6-4.
Pete clawed another one back for Palms and the match should have finished a draw, only for Heineken to jaw a black, leaving Wes to complete a six-ball clearance. Hammers got out of jail, and they were not the only ones as fellow 100 per-centers La Cana A also rode their luck against Toscales A. They have been in poor form, but were much better in Los Abrigos, and Toscales felt they could have gone home with something better than an honourable 7-5 defeat. Treehouse A have taken to the top flight like ducks to water and, without Greg the Peg Leg, they won at Dreamers A. The Peacocks are also going nicely. They were always in control against Tenerife Hammers C, who were certainly missing Bobby Baker. It was a good night for the Phoenix teams, who both won. Knights are getting their act together, picking up three points at Inn The Pink A, while Potters, inspired by POD, were too good for Terrace

Matches were just as tight in Division Two, with a couple of upsets. Palms B led the way, but their 100% record has gone. They were forced to take a draw at Toscales B, who produced their performance of the season. Inn The Pink B, who will be thereabouts at the business end of the campaign, enjoyed their trip to Dreamers B, where they farmed another three points. 2JZ are played two,
won two after their Pueblo Canario derby dust-up with Shorty’s, while in Silencio the A team from Cozy Corner have bragging rights over the ladies from the B team after getting home 8-4. James Place ended Bluebell B’s perfect start to the season in a tight one, while Exiles B got back on track at home to Gaffers C. TPT have started well, but they were chinned by Next Door. Not much Fun for the girls! RON DIXEY led all the way to win the Fun Golfers’ monthly competition and the Harry Davis Memorial Trophy at Los Palos on Sunday.
More than 20 players competed, with Nick Hill finishing second, in front of Colin Child,
who also took the gent’s prize for Nearest the Pin. Alas, the ladies failed to get anywhere near the pin. Must try harder next month, girls! Ian Crane sponsored the Harry Davis Trophy, and the next Fun Golfers’ competition is Sunday, 13th October. Anyone wishing to join this select band should call Clive on 922 797 640.
