BOOTED OUT!
THE Guaza carboot sale, which has been an institution in Arona for 14 years, has been closed.
The dusty, stony, fag butt-strewn parcel of land behind the BP petrol station will this Sunday lie empty. The weekly gathering of booters has been halted by Arona Council albeit from the Guardia Civil’s increasing pressure. Since 1999, the car boot appears to have operated on the basis of a verbal agreement
between organisers and the local town hall. Now, though, because of increasing police pressure concerning the illegality of activities and lack of clear licensing, that consent has been withdrawn. The weekly event created a deluge of paperwork for the police in the form of denuncias, ranging from faulty goods and pick-pocketing, to the serious fencing of stolen goods. From a police perspective, the site and activity was deemed insecure - and its existence untenable. A representative group

of five booters, armed with a 3,000-strong signed petition, visited Arona Town Hall on Monday for an emergency meeting with Arona Mayor Francisco Niño, and councillors Miguel Ángel Méndez, Marcos Afonso and Carmelo García, in an attempt to resolve the situation. That meeting confirmed that it was a difficult position and that the closure affected many families, not only those who sell items but the many smaller businesses in the locality which have benefitted from the thousands of Sunday visitors.
It was agreed that subsequent meetings would take place throughout the week and a further meeting is taking place today (Friday). It appears that the legitimate booters and visitors have lost out
through the greed, stupidity and fraudulent activity of a few, who have ruined it for the majority. Rastro organiser Pipi told Canarian Weekly on Wednesday: “The car boot has been using a private piece of (residential) land and the Guardia Civil have visited on many occasions to observe the activity taking place; we received a closure notice from the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall). “We are working with the Ayuntamiento to find a solution. But there will be no car boot this Sunday at the original site or an alternative one.” Yesterday (Thursday), the Arona Mayor confirmed to Canarian Weekly, “Because the Guardia Civil felt the Guaza car boot was insecure, we have had no option but to close the car boot for the foreseeable future. “We do, however, support it and want it to re-
open with the proper documentation in place, and we’re working with the representative group to find the appropriate solution. “It may be that the car boot remains closed for 4-6 weeks while the situation can be resolved.” Throughout the economic crisis, many families have used the car boot as a source of income to put food on the table. Critics say they are 'regulars' and using it as a business, so they should pay tax and insurance. But the whole ethos of car boot in its originality is being lost. A car boot is not a market but a place where individuals pay for the privilege of a space to sell personal possessions. If they are operating a business, they must advertise that fact and, as a result, contribute more for their pitch. Trading Standards in the UK set out clear guidelines for car boot sales.

News In Brief Shark scare for swimmers THE sighting of a two-metre shark swimming near the shore forced the closure of Playa Honda beach, in Las Americas, on Monday afternoon.
Several swimmers raised the alarm after spotting what appeared to be an injured shark, but the beach was reopened after a fruitless two-hour search.

King’s hip op a success
KING Juan Carlos’ operation on his replacement hip has gone well and his son, Prince Felipe, says he is “keen to get back on his feet”.
But the king will need another operation in about two months as he has been given a temporary replacement hip until the infection removed from his existing one has healed. In the meantime, he will be able to remain “relatively active”, say doctors, after a few days in hospital.

Rajoy is given a glimmer of hope SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, though upbeat, is still concerned about the country’s parlous state.
The Wall Street Journal quotes him as saying that Spain is “out of recession, but not out of the financial crisis”. He tells the magazine that his aim is for a “rigorous recovery to create employment” as well as his personal ambition to stand for election again at the end of 2015. “I have no intention of retiring, but my party will decide,” he admitted. The PP leader is said to be “reasonably satisfied” with steps taken by the European Union to tackle the financial crisis. And he congratulated German Chancellor, Angela Merkel on her re-election. “Things are going in the right
direction,” said Rajoy. He believes the Spanish economy will grow between 0.5-1% next year, but admits this would not be a magical, instant cure for the 26% jobless figures, adding: “Improvements will happen step by step.” When tackled about the EU bank bail-out, the PP leader said the Spanish banking system was now
“more transparent, more solvent and has better capital funding” following the European Central Bank’s loan. And, when questioned about the possibility of needing further funding, he said: “If you’re asking me about the situation as at today, I would tell you that in 2014, Spain will not need to increase the EU funding received.”
As for the awkward issue of the Bárcenas slush-fund case, which Rajoy has always denied, he said: “I hope society will see what my government has tried to do to create a solid base for the future.” The PM added: “You cannot govern a country by thinking every day about whether or not they will vote for you next time around.”
Free text books for schoolkids SPAIN’S Government has agreed to textbooks being lent to pupils during the school year and then returned to their teachers. The motion, tabled by UPyD (Unión, Progreso y Democracia, or Union, Progress and Democracy), an independent government party, was carried almost unanimously. And it seems certain to be included in the forthcoming amendment to the Education Law. It will come as a huge relief to many parents all over the country and in Tenerife - saving them 200-900 euros per child at the start of every school year. Loans of textbooks will be guaranteed by legislation for as long as any pupil is in compulsory education,.
But it does mean that sixth-form pupils, university students and those on professional or vocational training courses will still have to buy their own resource and exercise books. With unemployment hitting record highs and, often, both parents out of work, more and more children went back to school earlier this month without the necessary books.
But the cost of buying school textbooks has always been a bone of contention with parents in Spain. Some schools allow children to use their older siblings’ books, but others insist they have new ones, even if they are the same editions. Others change the set book list every year, meaning these cannot be passed down to
younger brothers and sisters. Although the nationalist parties CiU (Catalunya) and PNV (Valencia) were against the idea because, they said, it “took power out of regional governments’ hands and moved it to the central Parliament”, all others agreed fully with UPyD’s suggestion. That was based on a campaign by Elena Alfaro, a Madrid mum who recently delivered a 265,000-signature petition to the Ministry of Education Each party included its own ideas, like prohibiting schools from changing the set book lists for at least five years, and promoting digital resources such as PDF textbooks on tablets, which are easy and free to update.

Pay the poor says union
SPANISH residents, left penniless because of job losses, should be guaranteed a minimum State benefit of 5,108.60 euros a year.
That amounts to a monthly income of just under 426 euros, and the idea has been mooted by a leading union. The Labourers’ Com-
mission (CCOO) wants to see all those whose dole-money period has expired, or who are not entitled to any kind of unemployment subsidy, to at least have a survival income. Union officials want them to receive the equivalent of the minimum non-contributory State pension, but only if it is accompanied by a “social and professional retraining for work” programme.
27th September - 3rd October 2013
The funding should come from the State general budget, says CCOO chairman Ignacio Fernández Toxo. He has done his homework on the subject and calculates it would come to around one billion euros initially and, in total between 2014 and 2017, about four billion euros. Around 630,000 households - some 1,068,000 people - would be eligible for this minimum
benefit as they have no income whatsoever, adds Toxo. Most of them are living in the Comunidad Valenciana, Andalucía and Catalunya areas. The monthly 426 euros would apply per adult, not per household, meaning anyone living alone would receive the full sum. But where a couple living together have no income, they would be entitled to 852 euros a month. Those eligible should be aged 18 or over, have been residents in Spain, which must be accredited formally, for at least a year Or, in the case of Spanish nationals who have been living and working abroad, they must appear on the census somewhere in Spain for a minimum of six months. In addition to this maximum benefit, the regional governments would handle the payments and applications. And they would provide additional subsidies for housing or food for those in “real need” and for any “social emergencies”. Toxo stresses: “Spain’s president, Mariano Rajoy, has said that the country has come out of recession, but not out of the financial crisis. “However, there are millions of people in Spain who have not come out of either, and cannot see a time when they will ever get out of their own, personal crises.” Statistics held by the CCOO show that 26.8% of Spain’s population live in actual poverty.

AS avid readers will be aware, each week we feature a list of tweets: things people have said about our gorgeous island.
As a result, you can see which famous people are here (as they are Twitter addicts) and you also find the odd gem, in this case, late on a Thursday afternoon. Two, in fact! Carlos Alonso, our new Cabildo President, is in New York. We already know this, yet he has tweeted that “With the approval of extraordinary ppto yesterday, will resume immediately the works of the southern section of the island ring road” (translated) In another tweet, Spanish newspaper La Opinion states that the new Cabildo Vice President Aurelio Abreu, said yesterday (Thursday) that he expects work to begin on the South Hospital imminently, and work on the North emergency centre in the New Year.
He said that an agreement with the Government of the Canary Islands has been signed and that, in the next few weeks, work will begin to adapt the building. Abreu also explained that despite the budget cuts, the Island’s ring road section between Icod and El Tanque will be completed with the remaining six million euros in the kitty by the December deadline. “The deadlines will be met,” said Abreu, who expects the 2014 budget to “enable us to finish the remainder of the road”. So, via Twitter you find two critical Island projects that had been moth-balled now resurrected, to the delight of the masses, I would imagine. Alonso has only been in his new position for just over one week! And if you’re wondering what retired president, Ricardo Melchior is doing, he has also joined the Twitter fraternity in the past few days. The question is, who are you following? @CanarianWeekly Until next week…

cause work has only just started on this latest, up-market expansion. Orders have poured in for the fully-equipped, luxury apartments, with buyers already accounting for all but 10% of the total. And at prices ranging between 700,000 and 1.275,000 euros, the project has success stamped all over it. Canaries President Paulino Rivero, together with Steering Group Chairman, Ignacio Polanco and Borja Perez Arauna, President of Tropical Hotels, were

The Anaga massif is located in the northeast of Tenerife, involving three municipalities: Santa Cruz de Tenerife (71.9% of the total land area), San Cristóbal de La Laguna (20.5%) and Tegueste (7.5%). It is home to around 22,000 people. The next step is to get agreement from UNESCO so that the area can use the name of Biosphere Reserve.
present at Wednesday’s inaugurating ceremony. Among other dignitaries there were de Isora Mayor Pedro Martin, his Tourism Councillor Hector Gomez and the Government’s Tourism chief, Miguel Angel Santos. Rivero pointed out that although the Canary Islands had to “diversify” the economy, tourism was still the primary source of income. “It generates more than 33% of employment and over 31% of gross domestic product,” he underlined.
The resort will boast Europe’s largest spa, covering 2,500sq.m, plus seven freshwater swimming pools and the almost obligatory 18-hole golf course, The apartments are being sold as permanent residences, with access to the Abama hotel services, and they should be ready for occupancy from 2015. In all, there are 13 restaurants, where residents and guests can taste all kinds of foods, typically Spanish, Canarian and international.
Tourist signage The Cabildo in the coming days will begin working on two complementary projects relating to tourist access signs to El Teide, both north and south and the Port of Los Cristianos. The work will be completed at night, except for structures that can be undertaken from the side, without affecting traffic. The Minister of Roads and Landscape, José Luis Delgado, said this activity is to enhance the visitof tourists to the island. “These signs provide information access but also seek to draw attention to the identification of landscapes of the island while enjoying our cuisine and trade.” President of the Cabil-
do, Carlos Alonso, highlighted the importance of ensuring accessibility to the island territory and the interconnection of the different tourist areas, “promoting tourism and socioeconomic through the best information and leading resource guide and tourist facilities and economic territory.” For the southern access to Teide and the port of Los Cristianos, six signs will be installed at a cost of 159,916 euros. A similar amount is to be invested in access to Teide from the North side of the island. Throughout the year, Teide receives more than three million visitors and the Port of Los Cristianos, 1.8 million passengers.

The President of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Carlos Alonso, has been in New York at the Clinton Global Initiative meeting, together with former Tenerife Cabildo President Ricardo Melchior, who received a personal invitation from Bill Clinton. The meeting brings individuals from across the globe to discuss innovative solutions to improve people’s lives. The meeting raises a number of commitments to concrete projects related to health, connectivity, emergencies, etc. Since the creation of this body in 2005 it has set a total
of 2,300 commitments, valued at about 73.5 billion dollars, which are already improving the lives of more than 400 million people in over 180 countries. Carlos Alonso attended this international event to exhibit two projects led by the Corporation Project Alix and Control of Tropical Diseases. Carlos Alonso met with various inter-
ested parties during the event. Improved communications is one of the challenges facing humanity and is also part of the commitments outlined in the agenda of the Clinton Global Initiative and in this context Carlos Alonso took the opportunity to present the project Alix as a whole, with the datacenter, the su-

animals thanks to the birth of two Californian Sea Lions. The little cubs, each of which weighs approximately 10 kg and are now being fed by their mothers, are the 16th and 17th of the large group of Sea Lions housed at Loro Parque and Siam Park. This group has been breeding successfully since 1989 and this is due to the high level of welfare that these sea mammals enjoy in their installations. The cubs, two playful males, spend most of their time with their
mothers swimming and playing in the roomy installations provided for them by Loro Parque. After up to one year of lactation they will start eating fish and become more independent. A competition to choose names for the pups is running on the park’s Facebook site; see www.loroparque. com or facebook.com/ loroparque for more details. The Californian Sea Lions (Zalophus californianus) belong to the species of seals and
sea lions, specifically to the family of eared seals, and live on the coasts of the Northern Pacific Ocean. They are characterized by the great difference in size between males and females. While the males can reach between 300 – 380 kg, the females weigh only 90 – 100 kg. They live on fish and molluscs and are the only mammals with lactose-free milk. They are very sociable and playful, living in numerous groups and interacting constantly. Photo: Ulrich Broode.

Free guided tours of the Palmetum The Palmetum in Santa Cruz is one of a few unique projects in the world, which has transformed an urban landfill in a sustainable space.
The City of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has launched a series of free guided tours to one of the unique projects in the world, which has transformed an urban landfill space for leisure and culture botany: the Palmetum. After almost three decades of hard work to recover degraded space, the new image of the ancient mountain Lazaretto, has now been converted into a unique, example of sustainable development. The city now has a botanical garden from tomorrow it can begin
receiving various free tours until they open the doors to the general public later this year. The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, presented the botanical garden to the media. The visit also included the participation of Carlos Morici, expert botanist,

who told the audience the main features of this green space. The Patron of Santa Cruz Foundation Award Sustainable Islands, Wolfredo Wildpret, and the scientific director of the Institute for Agricultural Research Canario, Manuel Caballero, came
along to support the presentation of the new botanical garden. José Manuel Bermúdez said “the main features of this garden, extends its greenery to 112 hectares with spectacular vegetation, the result of collaboration between many institutions
around the world.” This space represents an extraordinary opportunity for Santa Cruz, since it is a priceless natural value, where we can enjoy almost 500 different species of palm trees around the world”. The mayor stressed, in turn, the great
attraction is that it’s in the city and in this regard stressed that “it is essential to continue working to maintain and preserve this space to become a symbol and benchmark site world “. The botanical garden is located on the coast of Santa Cruz, rising like the garden out of the city. It has many viewpoints with splendid views of the sea, the city and the mountains of Anaga. In its garden grows an admirable collection of palms bathed in streams, lakes and waterfalls. “Palmetum, an island in the city” is the slogan that the City has chosen to launch this great botanical garden. Asleep at the wheel? No… in the cockpit! THE case of two pilots falling asleep at the same time while in midair “comes as no surprise” to UK pilots’ organisation Balpa. But the organisation says the case just why EU changes to flighttime rules are “dangerous”. In a report to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), a pilot revealed that he and his co-pilot nodded off on the Airbus passenger jet while the aircraft was on autopilot last month. He revealed that they’d both had just five hours’ sleep the previous two nights. A CAA spokesman said: “This was a serious incident but an isolated one. I think lessons will be learnt from this. We are circulating this report within the industry. “We don’t know why the pilots had had so little sleep before this flight. They were taking it in turn to have rest periods, with the one always checking the au-
topilot. And it looks as if both fell asleep at the same time.” Balpa said it had “repeatedly warned the CAA of the risk of both pilots falling asleep, including in a letter to each member of the CAA board last year”. General Secretary Jim McAuslan said: “British pilots want to make every flight a safe flight, and tiredness is the biggest challenge they face. “As the regulator responsible for UK flight safety, the CAA has been far too complacent about the levels of tiredness among British pilots, and failing to acknowledge the scale of the under-reported problem. “In fact, the CAA and Government are backing EU cuts to UK flight safety which will increase tiredness among pilots and the risk of dangerous incidents.” Balpa says the planned EU flight rules will have a “grave impact” on aviation safety because the
proposals are “flawed in many areas”. The proposed regulations would see pilots being legally allowed to land an aircraft after being awake for 22 hours. They would also mean pilots could operate longer-haul flights such as from the UK to the US west coast, - with only two crew rather than the current three. The proposals would also see pilots working up to seven early starts in a row. A news agency found out about the pilots falling asleep after asking the CAA for incidents of pilot fatigue. The CAA did not say which airline was involved, nor where the aircraft, an Airbus A330, was travelling. Of the proposed EU changes, the CAA said: “We understand that Balpa are not happy with the proposals, but we think overall it is a good package and not much different from what we have now.”

built the tablet from scratch, tailoring it around customer needs and ease of use. Hudl users can enjoy instant access to Tesco’s full range of digital services, all in one place, through a convenient, dedicated launcher button. These include blinkbox movies and TV, music and Clubcard TV (which offers free films and TV programmes exclusively for Clubcard holders), banking and of course shopping for groceries, clothing, homeware and more. Hudl comes in four colours and will be available to buy in store and online (on Tesco.com and Tesco Direct sites) from 30 September and will retail at £119. Hudl is about making Tesco customers’ lives easier, so Tesco Clubcard holders will be able to buy it at an even better price. Hudl will be available on Clubcard Boost* where customers can double the value of their vouchers, meaning many will be able to buy it for less than £100. According to OFCOM, three quarters of UK households do not have a tablet. Tesco’s research found that many feel that the technology is too expensive or intimi-
dating. So Tesco has entered the market to change that. Tesco Chief Executive, Philip Clarke, commented, “Hudl is a colourful, accessible tablet for the whole family to enjoy. The first stage in our tablet offering, it’s convenient, integrated and easy to use with no compromise on spec. Customers are quite rightly very discerning about the technology they buy so we knew we had to be competitive on all fronts.” “Being online is an increasingly essential part of family life and whilst tablets are on the rise, usage is still quite limited. We feel the time is right for Tesco to help widen tablet ownership and bring the fun, convenience and excitement of tablets to even more customers across the UK. The digital revolution should be for the many, not for the few.” The move is part of Tesco’s multichannel strategy, ensuring that customers can shop whenever, however and wherever they want. It recognises the increasingly important role that smart phones and tablets are playing in people’s lives and how they can make things easier.

Tragic April finds peace THE family of murdered schoolgirl April Jones said a final farewell yesterday (Thursday) at her funeral, even though her body was never found.
The mid-Wales town of Machynlleth, which shared their heartw r e n c h i n g grief, came to a standstill as a white horsedrawn hearse led mourners. And many wore April’s favourite pink colour in her memory. Among the mourners were the five-year-old’s parents, Paul and Coral, and their two children. Crowds lined the streets and filled St Peter’s Church - and its graveyard - for the long-awaited service. The coffin arrived at the church to the sound of Emeli Sande’s Read
All About It, relayed on loudspeakers outside. And as family members carried it inside, Coral wept, holding her hand to her face. She

was comforted by Paul, while other relatives fought back tears. A message from April’s family, written on the Order of Service, said: “We would like to say a big thank-you to everyone for their overwhelming kindness, sympathy and support during this sad, sad time.” Among the crowds were members of the
mountain rescue team who helped search for April. The Reverend Kathleen Rogers opened the service by saying: “We know that there are no words we can say at this moment to express what we are feeling. No words can alleviate our sorrow, or take away our pain.” Two poems by a local writer - one called April and the other called An Autumn Night - were read during the ser-
vice, and the words of well-known hymns were changed to suit the family. No relatives spoke at the packed service, which was organised only after the conclusion of an inquest, 10 days after which April’s remains - fragments of bone only - were released. The funeral party left the church for a private burial following the moving service It is almost a year to the day since April went missing, and her murderer, Mark Bridger, was jailed for his entire life in May. but reminders of the youngster are visible throughout the town. A memorial garden has been built on the estate of Bryn y Gog, close to the home where she lived for her brief life. Earlier, April’s father inspected flowers and dolls left at the garden, which has become a focal point for locals. A bench bearing her name has been placed among the trees and next to a pink play-
house. And up in the Welsh hills overlooking her hometown, a tree has been intricately wrapped in knitted pink patches, while below in the valley, pink ribbons still adorn many of the shop-fronts and houses. But the town is different now, according to Councillor Mike Williams, a friend and neighbour of April’s family. “It’s the magnitude of an event in which a fiveyear-old girl was ripped from her family, ripped from the community, in such a vile and vicious way,” he said. “But the town has stayed together, and together we will be. We will be as one and we will be always with the family in support.” April’s funeral reflected the wishes of her grieving parents, who had wondered for months whether it would even be possible because their daughter’s body was never found, apart from those bone fragments.

Survivor used dead teen’s blood to fool the terrorists
Q U I C K-T H I N KING Sneha Kothari Mashru survived the Nairobi mall massacre by smearing herself with a victim’s blood and playing dead to fool the terrorists.
The radio presenter said a teenage boy lying next to her died of his wounds as they hid from the gunmen at the Westgate shopping centre in the Kenyan capital. “I realised he was shot, because he was bleeding, so I pulled out his phone slowly and I tried to switch it off,” she recalled. “It was full of blood, and I tried to switch off the phone so that it could stop ringing (in case it alerted the attackers). “I took a lot of his blood - as much as I could - and I tried to put it on myself. I put it on my arm, and while I was trying to put it on my hand, I just realised that he had stopped breathing.
“So I put it on my arm, as much as I could, and I covered my face with my hair just to pretend that I’m dead or, probably, badly injured.” She added: “I would love to know who he was because his blood probably protected me from getting attacked.” Terror group al Shabaab claim their militants carried out a “meticulous vetting process” to separate Muslims from non-Muslims before killing dozens of men, women and children in the mall. Witnesses had described how the gunmen rounded up those inside the centre before asking them questions about Islam. In an email exchange with the Associated Press news agency, the al Qaeda-affiliated terror group confirmed that their fighters specifically targeted foreigners during the attack. “The Mujahideen carried out a meticulous vetting process at the mall and have taken every possible precaution to separate the
Muslims from the Kuffar (disbelievers) before carrying out their attack,” said the group. “Our targets have always been disbelievers, invaders and the apostate governments’ officials/troops who are allied with them.” The number of people killed in the attack is expected to rise from the current figure of 67, with speculation that there could be additions to the six dead Britons. Five terrorists were also killed in the fourday siege at the shop-
ping centre, while 10 suspects remain in custody in relation to the incident. Meanwhile, the family of Briton Niall Saville, who was injured in the attack, have paid tribute to his South Korean wife, Moon Hee Kang, who was killed. “The Saville and Kang families are devastated and heartbroken by the sudden loss of Moon Hee,” said a statement. “She was very close to the Saville family and brought so much joy to all of their lives. Moon
Hee was a bright, loving, kind and genuine person who will be greatly missed.” A British woman reportedly linked to the attacks gained a South African passport using an assumed identity. But the document was cancelled in 2011, said Kenya’s home affairs minister Naledi Pandor. She told the media that the passport was “fraudulently acquired”, adding that the Kenyan government had not yet contacted the South African government re-
garding the Westgate attacks. Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud has warned that such attacks may become more frequent as al Shabaab try to reassert their dwindling power base. “Some people sometimes mix the issues that Shabaab want an Islamic state in Somalia,” he told Channel 4 News. “That’s not true. Shabaab want a unified state all over the world. “They do not believe in borders, they do not believe in sovereignty, so their theme is global - it’s not even regional. They may do this act again and again.” On Wednesday, the group threatened that if Kenyan troops remain in Somalia, they must “be prepared for an abundance of blood”. Experts from the UK, the US, Israel and other countries are helping Kenyan authorities with the forensic investigation at the mall. Explosives experts and sniffer dogs are searching for booby traps in the wreckage.
INTERPOL issues Red Notice
As we go to print an INTERPOL Red Notice, or internationally wanted persons alert, has been issued for UK national Samantha Lewthwaite at the request of authorities in Kenya.
Lewthwaite, aged 29, who is also believed to use the alias ‘Natalie Webb’, is wanted by Kenya on charges of being in possession of explosives and conspiracy to commit a felony dating back to December 2011. Circulated to all 190 INTERPOL member countries, the Red Notice represents one of INTERPOL’s most powerful tools in tracking international fugitives.
Page 14
“By requesting an INTERPOL Red Notice, Kenya has activated a global ‘tripwire’ for this fugitive,” said INTERPOL Secretary General Ronald K. Noble. “Through the INTERPOL Red Notice, Kenyan authorities have ensured that all 190 member countries are aware of the danger posed by this woman, not just across the re-
gion but also worldwide,” said the Head of INTERPOL. Containing identification details and judicial information about a wanted person, INTERPOL Red Notices communicate to police worldwide that a person is wanted by a member country and request that the suspect be placed under provisional arrest pend-
ing extradition. Secretary General Noble said the publication of the Red Notice for Samantha Lewthwaite meant that the public could also play a crucial role in providing information to law enforcement to help identify and locate her. With Lewthwaite previously only wanted at the national level for alleged possession of a
fraudulently obtained South African passport, Secretary General Noble said this case underlined the ‘invisible threat’ posed by terrorists and criminals travelling internationally using illicit passports. “Every year hundreds of millions of individuals are boarding international transport and crossing borders without having the authenticity of their travel or identity document checked. This dramatically compromises our ability to effectively screen and identify at airports and land crossings those individuals who could be suspected criminals and terrorists,” said Mr Noble. The INTERPOL Chief pointed to a significant gap in international security by highlighting that despite approximately 1.1 billion
international trips being made in 2012, only 700 million travel documents were screened against INTERPOL’s Stolen and Lost Travel Documents database which currently contains more than 38.5 million records from 166 countries. “Until this glaring hole in global security is properly addressed, no country in the world can consider itself safe from terrorists and other criminals crossing borders to harm their citizens and visitors,” concluded Secretary General Noble. Samantha Lewthwaite is the widow of Germaine Lindsay, one of the four bombers involved in the 7 July terror attacks in London in 2005, in which 52 people were killed and hundreds more injured.

The rising food prices are a big source of stress New evidence from Which? reveals rising food prices are increasing the squeeze on hard-pressed consumers, causing stress and worry.
With the cost of living a major theme for all political parties, new research from Which? shows eight in ten shoppers (78%) are concerned about the increasing cost of food. Over the last six years, food prices have risen over and above general inflation by 12.6% but with incomes stagnating, nearly half (45%) of consumers now say they are spending a larger proportion of their available income on food compared to 12 months ago. Six in 10 (60%) are worried about how they will manage their future spending on groceries if prices continue to rise with four in 10 (41%) saying the cost of food is a source of stress. Three in 10 (29%) say they struggle to feed themselves or their family because of the cost. In a separate survey, the latest monthly con-
Sai n s bur y ’ s has opened a new state of the art factory, bringing British patisserie -style puds to stores.
Creating 200 new jobs, the facility in Fakenham, Norfolk, is home to the creation of Sainsbury’s chilled desserts, ranging from Sherry Trifle to Chocolate Sundae. Inspired by the growing demand for home entertaining, the factory is a joint partnership between the retailer and Hain Daniels, British food and drink manufacturer. With this in mind a trial began earlier this year to create premium desserts using British ingredients and finished to perfection. The opening last Fri-

sumer tracking shows one million more households are feeling the squeeze compared to a year ago, leaving 9.5m struggling to cope with the cost of living. Over the past year, food has become the top item that people spend their savings on, overtaking luxuries like holidays and other essentials like household bills and car costs. On top of that, four in 10 (40%) say they are likely to cut back spending on food in the next few months. Which? executive director, Richard Lloyd, said: “While people seem to have accepted their grocery bill going up, stagnating incomes and rocketing food prices are causing stress and worry and leaving people wondering how they are going to cope. “Supermarkets need to make it much easier for consumers to spot the best deal by ensuring pricing is simple and making special offers genuinely good value for money. Politicians need to put consumers at the heart of their economic policies to tackle the rising cost of living and to support growth and prosperity.”
Egypt crisis hits tour companies
Recent violence across Egypt has weakened demand in the UK for holidays there.
Thomas Cook, in trading updates released yesterday (Thursday), said the turmoil which followed the coup that removed President Mo-
hamed Morsi from power, has hit recent bookings. It comes as no surprise that rivals TUI Travel has cut its winter flights to the sunshine country, as has Thomson, Europe’s biggest tour operator. The Foreign Office continues to advise against all but essential travel to most of the
country, except for the Red Sea resorts, including Sharm el Sheikh. North Sinai should be avoided altogether, it said, because of continuing unrest and the terrorism threat. TUI, which owns the Thomson and First Choice brands, said that although package holidays to Red Sea resorts from the UK were
still on sale, demand had disappeared. Thomson has responded to the Egypt crisis by shrinking numbers going there, and deploying most flights to other destinations. The decision was taken after some countries, including Germany, advised holidaymakers not to travel there at all.

day, 20th September, coincided with the next phase of products being made at the facility and an announcement of 200 jobs to the local rural area. Over 100 desserts a day are produced from a skilled team including
Gary Clayson, Specialist Dessert Maker playing a role in coming up with new ideas, hand finishing desserts on the production line and transferring these skills to other colleagues – all in an average day.
The 15 ready-to-serve desserts are made using premium ingredients and customer tastetested. The range includes: Taste the Difference Mango & Coconut Panna Cotta, Taste the
Difference Passion fruit & Belgian Chocolate, Taste the Difference Raspberry Panna Cotta Terrine. Mike Coupe, Group Commercial Director at Sainsbury’s says: “Today is a great milestone for a number of reasons, not only does Fakenham create world-inspiring desserts for our customers, it’s in line with our 20x20 commitment to double our sales of British food. “Working in partnership with our suppliers, we’re proud of what we’ve achieved so far and the proof will be in the pudding as we head towards further new products coming off the production line.” Rob Burnett Chief Executive, Hain Dan-
iels Group commented: “We’re thrilled to be formally opening our state of the art facility in Fakenham today. The project is the culmination of a collaboration with Sainsbury’s to provide the highest quality British products in the cold dessert category. As leaders of multifaceted food manufacturing across the UK, our investment in this project alone highlights our commitment to the long term and continued success of Hain Daniels and its partners. "We are also proud to be a key employer in the region and supporter of local initiatives in the community; we’re really excited about the future.”

VW van is pulled up after 63 years VOLKSWAGEN’S iconic camper van will no longer be produced after this year. And will not please aficionados, young and old alike.
The stand-out vans carried hippies through the Sixties, hauled surfers in search of waves, and even serves as a workhorse across the developing world. But the long journey of the VW Camper van is almost at an end. The company will halt production in Brazil - the last country still producing the German “bus”, as it is known - because of new laws being introduced in the South American country. It means all new vehicles produced must have air bags and antilock braking systems from next year. So it signals the end of an incredible era, with more than 10 million VW Transporter vans made globally over the past 63 years. After all those years, they remain popular because of their retro look and the “back-to-basics” driving experience they offer, compared with modern vans. Damon Ristau, direc-
tor of the documentary The Bus, which follows VW fanatics and their affections for the machine, said: “The van represents freedom. “It has a magic and charm lacking in other vehicles. It’s about the open road, about bringing smiles to people’s faces when they see an old VW van roll-
ing along.” It is possible that no other motorised vehicle has driven itself deeper into American and European pop culture than the VW. The camper van is known for its durability, and also its tendency to break down. Yet van lovers are adamant its failures simply serve to reinforce
its charm. Because its engine is so simple, it’s easy to fix, and that imparts a deeper sense of ownership. But in music circles, it is actually linked most closely to the Grateful Dead and the legion of touring fans who followed the rock group across the US in their mobile VW homes.
The late Steve Jobs is said to have sold his van in the Seventies to buy a circuit board as he built a computer that helped launch Apple. The vehicle is also linked to the California surf scene because its cavernous interior is perfect for carrying boards. We have our share of
colourful, hippy-type vans here in South Tenerife. But in the poorer regions of Latin America and Africa, the vehicle doesn’t carry the same romantic appeal. In fact, it is seen as a workhorse in the main. It is used in Brazil by the postal service to distribute mail, by the army to transport soldiers, and by funeral directors to carry bodies. It also serves as a school bus for children, operates as a group taxi and delivers construction materials to building sites. Brazilians even convert their vans into mobile food carts, setting up on street corners for working-class, lunchtime crowds. In Brazil it is known as the “Kombi” - an abbreviation for the German Kombinationsfahrzeug which, loosely, translates as “cargo-passenger van”. Production in Germany was halted in 1979 because the van no longer met European safety requirements. That meant its future was dependent on operations in South America. Now, sadly, new legislation has sounded the camper’s death knell!
Striking union’s Xmas threat A LEADING workers’ union is threatening strike action at post offices over Christmas unless a row over jobs, pay and closures is resolved.
The ultimatum came as the Communication Workers Union (CWU), already locked in a separate dispute with the Royal Mail over privatisation, confirmed a fresh strike affecting hundreds of Crown post offices. CWU members, at Crown post offices in England, Wales, North-
ern Ireland and most of Scotland, will walk out on Monday, followed by a strike in a handful of branches in Scotland on Tuesday. It will be the 12th round of industrial action since Easter, and staff are also taking other forms of action, including a sales ban on financial products and services. Dave Ward, CWU deputy general secretary, said: “If the Post Office think this dispute will simply fade away, they are sadly mistaken. “Our members are fiercely opposed to the company’s plans to close and franchise offices, slash jobs and im-
27th September - 3rd October 2013
pose a pay freeze. “The company’s plans are to downgrade the network, reduce services to local communities and hit jobs in the network. “There is no mandate for this course of action, and customers across the country are appalled at the reckless attitude of the Post Office towards these public services. “We have tried talking to the Post Office about costs and efficiencies, but this is a company which made £94m profit last year and paid significant bonuses totalling £15.4m primarily to senior managers. “This can’t be paid for
by cuts to frontline jobs and services, it’s simply not right.” He added: “Next
week’s strike, and the continuing sales ban activity, will continue into the Christmas period
unless management see sense and negotiate a fair deal for Crown office staff.”

Chef Gino D'Acampo makes a culinary journey around his native Italy. In this episode, he explores the intriguing region of Puglia, where centuries-old tradition meets the modern world. The area is famous for its olive oil, and Gino examines the gnarled olive trees which have dominated the landscape for thousands of years. In the shade of an old masseria, or farmhouse, he dishes up a carpaccio of tender beef fillet, served with a refreshing Italian gremolata dressing and rocket salad. In Puglia's capital, Bari, Gino samples an innovative olive oil ice cream. Then, tucked away in one of Bari's medieval side streets, he comes across a group of local ladies skilfully handcrafting orecchiette - little ears pasta. Our chef is keen to learn the ancient technique but proves better at cooking the pasta than shaping it. Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Channel 4, 20.00
Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films, as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide lawenforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange and the unknown around the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage; Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), expert pilot and martial artist; Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), brilliant engineer; and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet). Channel 4 will premiere “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” on Friday 27th September at 8pm. Channel 4 Chief Creative Officer, Jay Hunt says; “Like the Superhero universe from which it has come, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is big, bold and absolutely exhilarating. Featuring the production values you’d expect from Marvel and ABC Studios, this is family entertainment at its most exciting.”

The singing competition reaches the bootcamp stage. Dermot O'Leary offers support as the hopefuls reach this make-or-break milestone on their X Factor journey, as judges Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh learn which category they will be looking after at the live shows, meaning that the stakes are even higher as they choose who to take with them to their judge's house. However, no one is safe until the last person in each category has sung, as the judge can change their mind at any point, swapping an act already through with someone else who comes on and out-performs them.

Sweet Dough. It is week six in the tent and time for sweet dough week - but will it prove bittersweet for the bakers? They kick off with a signature tea loaf. Most of the bakers choose to make something connected to home, so Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood are presented with everything from locally sourced loaves from Yorkshire and Oxford to Devonshire-inspired panettone and Welsh bara brith. Meanwhile, there is a look at the history of the Sally Lunn, and the story of the torta negra - the well-travelled tea loaf that creates a taste of Wales in the middle of Patagonia. The bakers face Paul's most twisted Technical Challenge yet and a Showstopper that draws on all of Europe for inspiration, creating 36 sweet European buns - from Swedish cinnamon buns to German schnecken and French brioches. Over halfway through and the stakes are high, but will their dough rise too?

W C choice The Crane Gang BBC2, 20:00
Following the men and women of the UK's largest mobile crane company. This episode sees the pressure mounting for the UK's largest mobile crane company. Lifting a hugely expensive sculpture into a private home in Somerset proves to be a logistical nightmare as an important client watches. In East London, the removal of an old railway bridge turns to angst and argument when the job falls 12 hours behind schedule. For crane driver teams like Leigh and Lee, it all means a relentless and frustrating 24/7 schedule as they crisscross the country in their 2-berth transit van, rarely seeing their homes. It is not just the workers who are feeling the heat either, as commercial director Gareth Jones sees balance sheets hit hard when high winds lead to jobs being cancelled across the country.
Big Fat Quiz of the 90s Channel 4, 21:00
The Big Fat Quiz is back with an all-new look back at the 1990s. Host Jimmy Carr is joined by Jonathan Ross, Jo Brand, Sue Perkins, Lee Mack, Bob Mortimer and Richard Ayoade to play the comedy quiz that goes retro, along with guest question-setters, including Hanson, Melinda Messenger, Andi Peters, Mr Motivator and Goldie.
Countryfile
American Football Live at Wembley
BBC1, 19:00
Channel 4, 17:30
Countryfile is in Shropshire. Its countryside is rich picking for some of Britain's finest homegrown foods. Matt Baker and Ellie Harrison head to the small market town of Ludlow for its annual food and drink festival. This place is up there with the best when it comes to all things local. Matt samples a few delights on offer at the festival, and he meets the farmer putting the county's native breed of sheep back on the culinary map. Meanhile, Ellie finds out how rare breed pigs are giving our continental cousins a run for their money, and doing their bit for conservation too. Elsewhere, Tom Heap looks at the threat that nonnative invasive species are posing to British plants and wildlife - and even to our own houses. But, as he discovers, some home-grown species also seem to be upsetting the delicate balance of flora and fauna in the countryside. And Adam is in Wales catching up with two sheep dog handlers representing Wales in this year's One Man and His Dog competition.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Minnesota Vikings. For the seventh year in a row, the excitement of American Football comes to Wembley and this year the famous stadium is hosting two games. This week, to kick off the NFL International Series, the Minnesota Vikings take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, before next month's meeting in north London sees a clash between Jacksonville Jaguars and last season's Super Bowl runners-up, the San Francisco 49ers. Starring for Minnesota tonight is the man ranked Number 1 Player of last season across the whole NFL - running back Adrian Peterson. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, will hope that their appropriately nicknamed quarterback, 'Big Ben' Roethlisberger, finds inspiration in London. Presented by Colin Murray, with analysis and comment from Mike Carlson. Coverage of the match continues on More4 from 8pm.

Porn on the Brain Channel 4, 22.00 As part of Channel 4’s Campaign for Real Sex, Porn on the Brain is an authored film by journalist Martin Daubney, who walked away from his position as editor of lad’s magazine, Loaded, after becoming a father. His son is now four. Confused by the alarming headlines and driven by the knowledge that his boy will soon reach the age at which most children first see porn (10 yrs) Martin wants to find some answers. Is porn really bad for kids? Where is the evidence? During the course of making the film, Martin discovers that porn has changed from what he remembers as a teenager. Today’s hardcore porn is extreme; it’s free and it’s only one click away, and Martin is genuinely shocked by what he sees. Martin meets internationally-renowned neuroscientists, leading therapists and educators who are all concerned about the effects on vulnerable teenage brains today of free and easy access to hardcore pornography. Martin finds a 19-year-old who is willing to speak on camera and who feels that his porn habit is out of control. He watches it every spare moment he gets – sometimes 16 times a day. During the programme, he sees a Sexual & Relationship Psychotherapist and opens up for the first time about the profound effect porn is having on his otherwise normal life.

The South Pacific islands' extraordinary isolation has created some of the most curious, surprising and precarious examples of life found anywhere on Earth, from giant crabs that tear open coconuts to flesh-eating caterpillars that impale their prey on dagger-like claws. Human culture is different too, the men of Pentecost Island celebrating their annual harvest by leaping from 20-metre high scaffolds with only forest vines to break their fall. And on the tiny island of Anuta, possibly the most remote community of people on the planet, the locals survive entirely on what they can grow and catch.

Motorway Cops BBC1, 21:00
The Motorway Cops are called to the scene of a head-on collision on the motorway near Birmingham city centre. A woman has died and officers have to clear the road and try to discover the cause of the accident. Keeping the roads safe is a major concern for the Motorway Cops, but sometimes the excuses they hear for poor driving allow them to use their discretion. PCs Martin Smith and Nigel Kearney have to decide whether to 'throw the book' at a trucker who they've caught using his mobile phone while at the wheel of his 44ton lorry. In Yorkshire, as PCs Jim Duffy and Mick Roffe are forced to chase a man who has run away from them after being handcuffed, PC Matt Fleming faces a difficult choice when the man they have arrested begs the police to let him say goodbye to his girlfriend and their baby daughter before he is returned to jail.
Gadget Man Channel 4, 20:30

Richard is not a fan of doing it yourself, believing that gadgets should be able to do all the work for you. Text Santa on ITV Morrisons, Santander and Vodafone pledge to Text Santa on ITV Three of the High Street’s biggest names are today announced as appeal partners for ITV’s annual charity fundraiser, Text Santa. Morrisons, Santander and Vodafone will support the campaign and help raise money at stores and outlets across the country. Text Santa, now in its third year, will broadcast on Friday, 20th December 2013, with exclusive live performances by some of the biggest names on television. Text Santa raises money and awareness for six UK based charities in the run-up to the big night. This year’s chosen charities are Age UK, Barnardo’s, BeatBullying, British Heart Foundation, CLIC Sargent and Help the Hospices. Peter Fincham, ITV Director of Television said: “We are proud that Text Santa raises awareness of charities that make a difference in local communities, not to mention millions of pounds to help fund their important work. It’s fantastic news that Morrisons, Santander and Vodafone will support the initiative to help us raise money and awareness for this year’s six very deserving charities.” Viewers will be able to donate money throughout the campaign via text using JustTextGiving by Vodafone, and online at itv.com/textsanta plus over the counter at Santander branches. They will also be able to buy exclusive Text Santa merchandise at their local Morrisons. All funds raised for Text Santa 2013 will be distributed equally between the six charities. The appeal has raised nearly £10 million for charities since it started in 2011.

Here, the pair arrive in Wensleydale and they are entering the savoury tartlets category of the Wensleydale show. They could not come to this part of the world without visiting a local producer of real Yorkshire Wensleydale cheese - and David Hartley cannot wait to show them how his fine product can make all the difference to a simple tart. So, inspired and armed with some cheese, it is back to the job in hand and our chefs set up their camp kitchen. Will all of their professional experience guarantee success? It is down to judge Pat Hesketh to decide whether they make the grade.

In the South Pacific there is no such thing as a deserted island. They may be the most isolated in the world but every one of the region's 20,000 islands has been colonised - from New Guinea, home to birdsof-paradise and the tribe whose brutal initiation ceremony turns young warriors into 'crocodile' men, to Fiji, French Polynesia and Hawaii. This is the story of the ultimate castaways - from saltwater crocodiles and giant eels to crested iguanas and weird frogs - who succeeded against all odds to reach islands thousands of miles apart.

BBC Sports Personality Of The Year
2013 marks the 60th Anniversary of BBC Sports Personality Of The Year on Sunday, 15 December, celebrating yet another year of success for the UK’s sportsmen and women. The show, which broadcasts live on BBC One from the first direct arena in Leeds, will see Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan sharing the presenting duties. Sue Barker, having presented the programme for the past 19 years, has decided to step down as a host but will be a member of this year’s judging panel. Sue will remain at the helm for a host of BBC Sport programmes, including Wimbledon and the Winter Olympics, and will play a major role in contributing to this year’s live show. The 2013 panel will be made up of Director of BBC Sport, Barbara Slater (Chair); BBC Head of TV Sport, Philip Bernie, Executive Editor of BBC Sports Personality Of The Year, Carl Doran; BBC Radio 5 live presenter Mark Pougatch; three newspaper sports editors: Alison Kervin (Mail On Sunday), Adam Sills (Telegraph) and Dominic Hart (Mirror); a pan-sports broadcaster/journalist, Sue Barker; and three former nominees: Dame Kelly Holmes, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and Michael Vaughan OBE; along with Liz Nicholl OBE, Chief Executive of UK Sport. The panel will select the shortlist for BBC Sports Personality Of The Year, and the winner will once again be decided by public vote on the night of the show. The panel also chooses the first, second and third place for Team Of The Year, Overseas Personality Of The Year and Coach Of The Year awards. Additional awards include Lifetime Achievement, the Helen Rollason award, Young Sports Personality Of The Year and Unsung Hero will also be announced on the night. Barbara Slater, Director of BBC Sport, says: “As it’s the 60th anniversary of Sports Personality Of The Year, we’ll be looking back at some of the UK’s greatest sporting moments as well as celebrating all that has been achieved this year. The fact that the show remains so popular after so many years is testament to the outstanding performances of our sportsmen and women.

The Great British Year BBC1, 21.00 The first episode of The Great British Year begins with New Year’s Day. Time-lapse photography captures Britain in the grip of winter, as the mist swirls in the hollows, frost shrouds the country and water begins to freeze, expanding and destroying plant cells. We see how British wildlife copes with the cold, as red kites track the farmers ploughing the hard ground, uncovering grubs and worms; and owls use their super-sensitive hearing to dive on voles under the snow. We discover how the changes of the seasons and the challenges they bring are reflected in the lives of British people. We are more in tune with nature than we realise. The approach of spring brings new life across the countryside and is captured in stunning and surprising detail. Adders emerge into the frosty air to bask in the spring sunshine and the woodland floor erupts with carpets of snowdrops. In the city, new grass brings out thousands of people rushing to mow their lawns by day while deer creep out of the shadows to graze roadside verges by night.

The House That ÂŁ100k Built BBC2, 20:00
Architectural journalist and critic Kieran Long and award-winning architect Piers Taylor are following self-builders as they take on the biggest gamble of their lives. All have less than ÂŁ100k to spend, little or no experience and life savings on the line. In this episode, the duo help Shropshire farmers Ruth and Tony. The couple are on the brink of retirement and have ambitious plans to replace their crumbling farmhouse with a determinedly modern design. Further more, they believe they can save money by handling every stage of the build themselves, despite a lack of experience or training in housebuilding.
Science Britannica BBC2, 21:00
Professor Brian Cox guides viewers through 350 years of British science to reveal what science really is, who the people are who practise it, and how it is inextricably linked to the past, present and future of each and every one of us. British science has a long track record of accidental discoveries improving our lot. Wondering why tdhe sky is blue helped British scientists crack bacterial infection, whilst looking for a way to make quinine helped make our world a much more colourful place, as it led to the discovery of the first synthetic organic dye.

Mayhem and Mishaps: Britain Caught on Camera BBC1, 21.00 Mark 'Chappers' Chapman catalogues the everyday mishaps and accidents we encounter in our lives. Each category of calamity is illustrated using home video clips and CCTV. Often shocking but sometimes just plain funny, an amazing wealth of mishaps has been caught on camera. From unwitting motorists caught in floods to people falling down holes and walking into glass doors - not to mention the exploding white goods, and BBQ fires. Mark unpicks the causes of catastrophe by setting up stunts and demonstrations, and by visiting testing institutions around the UK where experts devote their lives to disaster prevention. From the everpresent danger of slippery floors, to the carnage caused by over-ambitious DIYers, the programme looks into how different types of accident happen, and why. And offer advice on what, if anything, we can do to keep these everyday disasters out of our lives.

Now, after years of trial and error, he wants to help everyone cook well and become confident in the kitchen. This episode he explains grilling, either on the stove or outside on the barbecue. Grilling cooks food on or over flames, glowing coals or hot bars. For Raymond it is a simple method which can produce ambitious dishes. He skips between the stove in his restaurant kitchen and a barbecue in the vegetable garden. A spatchcock chicken with celeriac remoulade is a mouth-watering dish that shows how flattening the chicken allows it to cook perfectly on the barbecue. A seabass is wrapped in banana leaves before placing it on the barbecue. The leaves protect the delicate fish while allowing the amazing smoky flavour to permeate the fish.

The Hairy Bikers continue their journey in Germany, one of Dave's favourite countries. Travelling from the wine region of the Rhine Valley to the spiritual home of beer, Bavaria, they discover Germany's passion for bread of every shape, size and flavour. They prove that German cuisine isn't all sausages and beer, but is based on regional specialities - from pretzels and Germany's white gold - white asparagus - to kirschwasser and Black Forest gateau. The Bikers turn out first-class potato bread with asparagus soup and their new and improved version of the 1970s classic black forest gateau. As they approach the end of their ride in Bavaria, they borrow a communal village wood oven to rustle up bierocks - meat-filled rolls - the perfect accompaniment to a stein of beer. They follow the Zoigl star, symbol of local micro-breweries, and find themselves singing along to an oompah band.

Entertainment
www.canarianweekly.com
What doesn’t Didi do? THERE is a wealth of entertainment experience on these shores, and you don’t always realise it until you recount some memories with someone who has been around the block over here. This is a fascinating story of an entertainer, which started 21 years ago. I caught up with David J Cocker, AKA “Didi” this week. That childhood nickname came from his parents because he was the youngest and smallest of his siblings, so he became Didi Dave. And it obviously stuck! The rest is history, and what a journey it has been for him. It began in 1992 when he arrived on the Island in mid-summer with his acoustic guitar, (which he still has to this day) and a Co-op carrier bag with a few clothes. His entertainment dream had begun, albeit humble and minimal. Didi would be on the seafront busking - one man and his guitar. It wasn’t long before he befriended other musicians, one in particular being wellrespected guitarist Dave Dean, who for the last 15 years has worked with Freddy Kay in The Looney Tunes duo, currently residing
in Shenanigans Bar on The Patch in Las Americas. They met in a bar where Didi was playing, on his very first day here. They quickly became friends and ended up working together for a spell before his big Tenerife break. He met two other musicians and they formed one of the most successful and popular bands ever to have played here - The Lizard Kings. By this time, Didi had established himself within the community of musicians and entertainers as a talented guitarist. But his gig with The Lizard Kings was as a bass guitarist and, never having played bass, he quickly picked
it up, learned the set list and the next chapter began for him. Didi recalls: “Beyond doubt, the years with The Lizard Kings, from 1996-2001, were the best.” He even had his own dressing room, and all the band members were treated like royalty at the venue. The place was packed out every night and their quality and ability were second to none: without doubt, they were the best rock band in Tenerife. However, as with most bands, the dynamics change after a while and members leave to start a family, or just simply return to their home lands. The end of The Lizard Kings was just another
beginning for Didi. During his time with the band he also worked the circuit as a solo artiste in the showbars, tributing soul legends like Joe Cocker. He was a big hit among audiences with his dry, matter-of-fact personality, along with his unique, versatile voice. The next band didn’t take long to come together, with Grand Theft Audio rocking audiences. Then came Kick, who stormed the TEAs last year after being nominated in the live category for Best Band. They went on to win after surprising the audience by doing their set in green mankinis and cowboy boots. It’s something never to be forgotten by those who were there.
beats. An example would be the music of the late Amy Winehouse with her covers of Monkey Man, by Toots and The Maytals, and The Specials’ Hey Little Rich Girl. These influenced Didi in his quest to create an exciting show, paying tribute to a fabulous genre. He pulled it off, too! His Ska show is very popular on the circuit and has a new element in Mikeys Bar, Los Cristianos, on a Sunday night. Didi teams up with Sam Saxo for the Ska show. Brass instruments play a huge part in Ska music, and having live saxophone from Sam just doubles the effect this show has on an audience. This new addition to what is already a fab show is available for all venues to book and will always wow a crowd. Everyone loves a bit of sax! Didi is currently in the studio working on an album, Didi’s All Skas, which will be available some time in November
featuring all the classic Ska tunes. The guitarist has recently put Grand Theft Audio back together with musicians Steve and Ivan, and they can be seen and heard at Ye Olde Ocean in Fañabe on Tuesdays and Saturdays, performing classic and modern rock songs. And with some outstanding three-part harmonies from the boys, these will also be nights to remember. After 21 years, David J Cocker is one of the most experienced entertainers on the Island, still treading the boards every night with a smile on his face - and love in his heart for the job he does. What can’t Didi do? He sings, delivers comedy, plays acoustic guitar, electric guitars bass, lead and rhythm ... there is no end to his musical talents. He is always there to help anyone in need and this is why I and many more will always take our hats off to this 100% Tenerife entertainer.
About two years ago, Didi came up with the idea of doing a Ska show. This music genre has become more and more popular of late, with mainstream recording artistes mixing sounds from ska and reggae

Sofa so good!
By Sue McDonald OKAY, so I’ve used that heading before, but I like it. And we’ve had a rush on reupholstering sofas, although I am hardly complaining!
The reason for each case is different. It may be wear and tear from a rental programme, a change of colour scheme, or some owners finally moving out to Tenerife and wanting to redecorate their property for their own full-time use. The common theme is that the sofa must be in good, structural
Page 38
condition - and if it has a bed, this must also be a sturdy mechanism. We can replace the mattresses if they are worn, and changes in foam production mean that a visco-elastic mattress can now be far more comfortable than a sprung one. Many people brought furniture from the UK years ago, and these sofas and armchairs are usually worth re-upholstering because of the original manufacturing quality. We have achieved some spectacular results, particularly in Royal Palm and Port Royale, where people have had a complete change of colour scheme to update their properties. Sofas are one of those items where it is worth investing well. It really
is a false economy to buy a cheap sofa that is uncomfortable as a sofa or as a bed from the beginning, or which has to be replaced within a year or two. People often come to us looking for a quality sofa because they have previously had one from that Scandinavian shop in the north but, a year later, need to replace it! Obviously, budget is an issue more than ever nowadays. But where possible it is wise to invest in this area more than others. Gilly and I are delighted that none of the above work has been affected because we no longer have the shop. Everyone so far has called us or e-mailed. We always visit the client’s property, in any case, and we have samples of our work available for inspection by appointment in our warehouse. The new side of the business, Deco Nuevo Services, is also progressing well. As I mentioned last time, we are offering all sorts of admin services, from dealing with official letters, disputes with utility companies, postal collection, translations and property management, etc. In fact, all the things that can be difficult to deal with if you do not live here full-time, and/ or you do not speak Spanish. If you need help with something, just give us a call – if we can’t help you, I’m sure we know a man who can!
John Lewis Christmas staff John Lewis is recruiting over 2,000 new temporary Partners (staff) as sales assistants in the run-up to Christmas this year.
With less than 100 shopping days to go until Christmas Day, applications are open for roles at John Lewis shops across the country, from Scotland to Exeter. Positions are available in a number of departments including the Christmas shop, furnishing accessories, homeware, fashion and electricals. The retailer is also on the hunt for a number of temporary Partners to work in its Distribution Centres, where over 80,000 orders are expected to be processed each day in the weeks leading up to Christmas. The 24 sites, including John Lewis’s 650,000 sq ft flagship Magna Park warehouse in Milton Keynes, process orders for both its online business and its 39 shops. Furthermore, there are temporary operator positions available at John Lewis’s
customer call centres. These Partners will play a vital role in advising customers on everything from stock availability to delivery options over the Christmas shopping period. Laura Whyte, Personnel Director, John Lewis said: “Christmas is an extremely important and busy time of the year for the business and it is essential that we have a strong and committed workforce in place early. We’re not only looking for people who can provide excellent levels of customer service in our shops and call centres, but also for individuals who understand the important role that our distribution centres play in making sure the Christmas shopping experience is as smooth as possible for customers.” John Lewis’s Operations Director, Dino Rocos, originally joined the business as a Christmas temp over 30 years ago. He said: “After finishing school I was looking for a job to earn money so I could travel the world and successfully applied for a sales assistant role at
the Peter Jones shop over the festive period. However, I really enjoyed the experience and when a permanent position became available I decided retail was a career I wanted to pursue. Over the years I’ve had fantastic support from the business, and via John Lewis’s training initiatives, in developing my skills which has enabled me to move up the career ladder. When I started as a Christmas temp I would never have believed that 30 years down the line I would be on the John Lewis management board and be responsible for the distribution and merchandising functions of the entire business.” The John Lewis recruitment team is committed to training all Christmas temporary staff to achieve the highest level of customer service and build upon John Lewis’s established reputation as one of Britain’s favourite retailers. Those interested in applying should visit www.jlpjobs.com to search for available positions.

The campaign was launched by the Minister of the Environment, Ana Lupe Mora and the Minister of Agriculture, José Joaquín Bethencourt. The objective is to involve 10,000 people to collectively fund the planting of 43,500 trees. The campaign even though ultimately is looking for investment into soil it will be promoted through the social media platform. Councillor Ana Lupe Mora stressed the importance of citizen cooperation, “for the success of the campaign that ultimately seeks
sustainability and care of our territory. To carry out this environmental initiative is needed to gather 345,000 euros”. You can log onto www. mirlo.co/es/paquetes to make a contribution and purchase a tree until the 10th October.
Potted Fruit No, it’s not a recipe. Due to our beautiful climate here it’s possible to grow fruit in pots allyear round. And according to Dobbies Garden centre in the UK you can grow virtually any fruit in a pot.
But, strawberries, apples, pears and gooseberries are all ideal – the best is to choose which one you’d like to eat. When buying plants, ask which varieties are best suited to containers. Add a layer of drainage material to your pot so the hole at the bottom is covered. Now add compost until the pot is
around two thirds full – a soil-based compost is best. Plant one fruit plant per pot (apart from strawberries which can be planted together) teasing the roots from the rootball. Make sure the top
27th September - 3rd October 2013
of the root ball is just below the rim of the pot and fill around the plant with more compost. Water and feed your plants regularly, making sure the compost never dries out. You may get a small crop from
some plants in the first year (especially strawberries). Harvest crops as soon as they are ready, eating them as quickly as possible for the best flavour. Source: www.dobbies. com
The aim is to begin planting later in the autumn thus recovering deforested areas and protect the natural area. The campaign seeks to recover a total of 29 hectares of Canarian forest and generate 11,600 tonnes of CO2
positive carbon footprint. The positive carbon footprint is generated because the trees are able to capture the carbon dioxide produced by human activity, thus preventing the contribution to global warming.
Agriculture and tourism The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, José Joaquín Bethencourt, announced this week that “the synergy between agriculture and tourism remains unresolved, although the Cabildo has incorporated it for years in its economic development strategy with initiatives like Tenerife Rural”. Therefore a new course has been launched on agricultural landscapes of Tenerife and agritourism, organised by the Tenerife Cabildo and the University of La Laguna. This course can be taken either as an undergraduate or in master tourism, it’s suitable for guides and tourist information, technical and interested entrepreneurs.
The idea is to create a synergy between two primary economic activities on the island, such as tourism and the primary sector. The councillor explained, Tenerife “can be a very enriching activity not just for tourists who want to enjoy authentic experiences here but also for residents”. The course with a capacity for 50 people will address issues such as agritourism, Tenerife Rural routes, agricultural systems, the ethnography and agricultural heritage of North and South of the Island and Tenerife Rural Parks, with reference to the main crops that exist in each zone, oranching goats and native breed of black pig, among other issues.

Mother Nature can get it wrong
A NEW, quickfire injection for breast-cancer patients could dramatically cut the time they spend in hospital - and save the NHS millions.
By Carl from Robot
WHEN it comes to your hair colour, nature doesn’t always know best.
And I come across so many clients that just do not suit their natural colour. For instance, those clients who are naturally quite dark, yet suit being lighter so much better, and also the reverse: those of you who are fairer but seem to get away with darker. It’s all about your skin tone and colour of your eyes. Some of you who have more of an olive skin-tone but choose not to sunbathe, can get away with a lighter brown, with blonde tones running through, because of your paler skin. The same goes for those with lightertoned skin but want to darken their complexion - because they can get away with a darker or redder colour shade. The make-up tone you normally use, as well the colour of clothing you wear, all goes to deciding what tone you can use successfully. I have a client whose hair I colour a deep-red wine. It looks great on her, yet she’s naturally strawberry blonde. I cannot imagine her with anything else, and I’m sure she would look quite strange with her own tone. So nature isn’t always
Page 40
Breast-cancer jab saves time
right. Those of my clients who chose to be blonde, yet aren’t naturally, would die if I sent them dark brown. Your colouring helps you decide your makeup and clothing. Think about it - when you go out shopping for a new look, you steer in the direction of those colours which suit you - all determined by the colour of your hair. You don’t choose a hair colour to match an outfit because your self image helps you decide what suits you best. Thus, changing your colour drastically might not only upset you but your make-up
and clothing as well. This is why consulting your stylists are always best when it comes to choosing hair colours. They will help and guide you through the choices, explaining the ins and outs of being seen in the colour you want, or think you should have. Look outside the box when choosing a shade for yourself, and consider what you would like - and what your stylist is recommending. After all, your hair isn’t a wig and you can’t just change the colour back if it’s not the look you were seeking.
Sufferers now have regular infusions of the drug Herceptin via a drip - an ordeal lasting for up to 90 minutes for just over a year in most cases. But the jab delivers the substance in just five minutes. This quick method has now been approved for widespread use by NHS England. It not only frees up time for patients but will increase capacity in hospital chemotherapy suites. Patients require an average of 18 Herceptin doses - one every three weeks - meaning the jab could spare them up to 25 hours in hospital over the full course of treatment. Herceptin, the first targeted drug for breast cancer, was designed for women with HER2-positive tumours. It is one of the most aggressive forms of the disease, affecting around 25% of the 44,000 British women diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
Before the Health Service rationing body allowed widespread use in 2006, there were highprofile battles by patients to win NHS funding for the drug. Patricia Hewitt, then Health Secretary, ordered a fast-track approval process for Herceptin, which led to it being used up to three years earlier than scheduled. Now, though, this new jab heralds another revolution in treatment, say experts, with trial data suggesting it works as well as, or even marginally better than, the time-consuming infusions. A trial of almost 600 women, living with the early stages of HER2positive breast cancer, compared standard infusion with a five-minute injection into the fatty layer of tissue under the skin. The tumour was completely eliminated in 45% of women who received the injectable form, compared with 41% per cent of those who had the infusion. The quicker way of delivering Herceptin was authorised for use in the UK by the European Medicines Agency. It has been endorsed by NHS England, the national commissioning body for treatments,
which clears the way for hospitals to adopt it. Scotland and Wales are likely to make similar decisions. As well as curtailing each hospital visit, the jab means the invasive tube, or cannula, used during infusions, would no longer need to be inserted every three weeks. A study found nine out of 10 patients preferred the injected version of Herceptin against the intravenous method. In addition to the patients’ advantages, the NHS could profit from savings valued at more than £20million, says manufacturer Roche. Although the drug costs the same in both forms - £1,200 for each treatment - savings are made in the time nurses spend preparing and administering the drug for intravenous use. Professor Lesley Fallowfield, from the University of Sussex, said: “Time is precious to women with breast cancer - far too precious to be waiting around in busy chemotherapy centres. “If the injections replaced intravenous administration in the NHS, then patients would spend less time in hospital and more time getting on with their lives.” The professor added: “If this method is adopted in the NHS, then the quality of life of women with HER2positive breast cancer could be improved dramatically.” Dr Mark Verrill, consultant medical oncologist at Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital, believes the jab might eventually be adapted for use by women at home. ‘The injection lends itself to administration in the community, resonating with the drive for treatment closer to home.” Sally Greenbrook, of Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: “This is a good example of how research can make improvements to patients’ quality of life, as well saving considerable time and money for the NHS.”

Toddlers learn more after midday snooze
GETTING young children to take an hour-long nap after lunch could assist with their learning by boosting brain power.
American researchers say a little snooze appears to help kids aged 3-5 remember preschool lessons better. And the benefits persist throughout the afternoon and into the next day. The authors, from the University of Massachusetts, studied 40 youngsters, and they maintain their results suggest that those little naps are critical for memory consolidation and early learning. When the children were allowed an afterlunch siesta, they performed significantly better on visual-spatial
(picture thinking) tasks in the afternoon and the next day than when they were denied that midday sleep. Following the nap, children recalled 10%
more of the information they were being tested on than they did when they had been kept awake. Close monitoring of 14 additional youngsters
who came to the researchers’ sleep lab revealed the processes at work in the brain during asleep. As the children napped, they experi-
enced increased activity in brain regions linked with learning and integrating new information. Lead investigator Rebecca Spencer said: “We are the first to report evidence that naps are important for pre-school children. “Our study shows that sleep helps the kids remember better what they are learning in pre-school. While older children naturally drop their daytime sleep, younger children should be encouraged to have a little doze.” Robert Scott-Jupp, of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said: “It has been known for years that having a short sleep can improve the mental performance of adults - for example doctors working night shifts. “Until now, however,
no one has looked at the same thing in toddlers. This is important, because pre-school nurseries are divided on whether they should allow their children a nap. “Toddlers soak up a huge amount of information every day as they become increasingly inquisitive about the world around them, and they begin to gain independence.” He added: “To be at their most alert, toddlers need about 1113 hours of sleep in 24 hours, giving their active minds a chance to wind down and recharge, ready for the day ahead. “We now know that a daytime sleep could be as important as one at night-time. Without it, they would be tired, grumpy and forgetful – and they would struggle to concentrate.”
Artificial sweeteners are a fat lot of good! DIET drinks and food packed with artificial sweeteners are a danger to health.
And, rather than help people lose weight as they claim, they force people to gorge on sugary snacks later in the day. Researchers discovered that low-calorie foods, laced with artificial sweeteners, cannot fool the brain, especially when a person is hungry or tired. Professor Ivan de Araujo, who led the American study at Yale University School of Medicine, said: “The consumption of highcalorie beverages is a major contributor to weight gain and obesity, even after the introduction of artificial sweeteners to the market. “We believe that the discovery is important because it shows how physiological states may impact on our choices between sugars and sweeteners.”
The study, published in The Journal of Physiology, suggests it is hard to fool the brain by providing it with “energy-less” sweet flavours. Our pleasure from consuming sweet solutions is driven by the amount of energy it provides. This means that the greater reward received in the brain comes from sugars and not artificial sweeteners. The study in mice identified a specific brain signal critical for determining choice between sugars and sweeteners. This signal regulates dopamine levels - a chemical necessary for reward-signalling in the brain. But this happens only when sugar is broken down into a form
27th September - 3rd October 2013
where it is usable as fuel for cells of the body to function. Prof de Araujo added: “According to the data, when we apply substances that interfere with a critical step of the ‘sugar-to-energy pathway’, the interest of the animals in consuming artificial sweetener decreases significantly, along with reductions in brain dopamine levels. “This is verified by the fact that when hungry mice are given a choice between artificial sweeteners and sugars, they are more likely to switch their preferences completely towards sugars - even if the artificial sweetener is much sweeter than the sugar solution.”

Burger King’s slimline tonic BURGER KING, conscious of the ever-growing waistbands of Americans, is launching low-fat, crinklecut chips in the States.
The company has also paid heed to pressure from consumer groups for fast-food chains to offer healthier alternatives - and to improve the nutritional quality. These chips, wittily named Satisfries, will be on sale in the US and Canada, and Burger King stresses that these new brand of “fries” will contain 40% less fat, and 30% fewer calories than those sold by McDonald’s. It adds that the Satisfries are also healthier than Burger King’s own regular fries. A Burger King spokesman says a small portion of the new fries clocks up 270 calories,
Page 42
compared with 340 calories in a small portion of its regular chips. But comparisons with other groups such as McDonald’s can be confusing and mislead-
ing because fast-food chains have their own definitions of what qualifies as a small, medium or large serving. A small portion of McDonald’s chips, for ex-
ample, weighs considerably less than a small portion at Burger King. Burger King, under current owners 3G Capital, the Brazilian private investment firm, has tried to revive its image - and revamp its menu at the same time. Satisfries use the same ingredients as Burger King’s regular chips: potatoes, oil and batter. But the batter used does not absorb as much oil. Another difference is the crinkle-cut shape which is devised, partly at least, to enable staff to distinguish them easily from the full-fat chips when they are deep-frying them together. At £1.18 for a small order, the Satisfries are 18p more expensive than regular fries. More than 33% of Americans are obese, and about 10% of the nation’s healthcare bill is tied to obesity-related diseases, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Insignia
By Jav VAUXHALL’S Insignia, consistently the biggest selling car in its fleetdominated class since 2008, has been revamped.
And the verdict is overwhelming: this fivedoor family hatchback is the latest and finest trend-setter from the company, known as Opel in Europe. With three body styles, the Insignia offers genuine versatility, is cheaper to buy, cheaper to own, smarter to look at and, generally, more pleasing to use thanks to this facelift. It forms part of a Vauxhall family car history stretching back over a century. The very first Vauxhall model, from 1903, could be had with four seats, so the company, although best known for their sporting models, have a family-car history just about as long as that of any car-maker. The current model, launched in 2008, was the first product to appear on GM’s Epsilon II platform. As part of its most thorough refresh
stamp of class
since then, Vauxhall have simplified the Insignia range, updated its styling, upgraded its interior, and reappraised its chassis settings and the contents of its bonnet. The aims were a wider, lower and more planted overall look; a more comfortable ride; a cleaner fascia with more up-to-date infotainment and connectivity technology; and the kinds of emissions, equipment levels and P11D prices to make the company-car lists of the UK’s biggest fleet operators. The Insignia offers plenty of versatility, with a line-up that includes saloon, hatchback and estate body styles, and also features five diesel engines and four petrols, front and all-wheel drive, automatic and manual gearboxes and even standard passive or optional active dampers. For this facelift, Vauxhall designers concentrated on refreshing the car’s front and rear bumper styling. It has new, more
powerful headlamps, a new radiator grille with a broader chrome bar, and a redesigned lower valance that draws the eye outwards and downwards. There are several new powertrain options, among them a detuned version of the Astra VXR’s 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. But the most significant are two “Ecoflex” versions of Vauxhall’s 2.0-litre turbodiesel, which both return better than 75mpg on the NEDC combined cycle. And both emit just 99g/km of CO2. That’s excellent economy and emissions performance
for a car this size. Private buyers may be more interested in the richer end of the Insignia’s engine spectrum, which is populated by 158 and 192bhp four-cylinder diesel options, and 138, 168 and 247bhp turbocharged petrols. The Insignia always had a spacious, functional sort of interior, and while the most recent round of revisions hasn’t radically changed that character, the fascia redesign and infotainment refit was much needed. A touchpad selector is mounted on the centre console, immediately behind the gear lever,
as well as an LCDstyle multi-function speedometer, which can be set to display a variety of information in several styles, all programmable by new steering-wheel controls. In the front, leg and headroom are plentiful and there are comprehensively adjustable seats and a wide range of reach/rake adjustment for the steering wheel. Room is good but not outstanding in the rear, but the boot is long, wide and respectably deep. The Insignia’s bigselling 2.0-litre diesel engine has come a long way since 2008 and, in the current version, it
would bear comparison with plenty of premiumbrand diesels on overall quietness. All in all though, the car has decent mechanical refinement quiet enough for fairly relaxed, high-mileage motorway use, which is what most owners will care most about. While the diesel engines are particularly competitive with rival manufacturers’ offerings, the 1.4-litre turbo-charged petrol engine is worth considering for the way it adopts a forward-looking approach of downsizing. The chassis has benefitted from revised damper and anti-roll bar settings, while electronic powersteering, reprogrammed for improved feel, is standard in all but the range-topping VXR model. As with all new Vauxhalls, the Insignia will be supplied with a “lifetime” warranty, and pricing starts at £16,279, which is nearly two grand less than the outgoing model.
Ford’s 45-grand formula for fun THE Formula Ford is a lowcapacity turbo, cheap to run, fun to drive - and it would make a great alternative to track-day specials like the Ariel Atom.
It’s a true race car for the road, and the tiny engine proves you don’t need a big displacement to get a thrilling drive. The bare cockpit, firm ride and lack of creature comforts mean it’s for enthusiasts only, but there’s an outside chance that Ford will turn it into a production reality. Formula Ford is the starting point for
most Formula One champions, and to celebrate this, Ford have combined the singleseater with the awardwinning 1.0-litre, threecylinder, EcoBoost engine from the Fiesta in a road-going version of its racer. Engineers have added the larger turbocharger from the Fiesta
27th September - 3rd October 2013
ST, so the tiny engine produces 170bhp, which is up 47bhp on the most powerful EcoBoost in the standard Fiesta. And to make the racer road-legal, fitted lights and indicators have been installed, and there’s even a tax-disc holder on the inside of the front wheel. Even so, don’t be
fooled into thinking that the conversion to a road car and production engine has toned down the performance. Clamber into the narrow cabin, attach the F1-style steering wheel, push the starterbutton and the engine fires into life abruptly! Only after the cutslick tyres are warm, and you’ve adjusted to the heavy steering, can you really appreciate this car’s superb handling. It changes direction instantly and generates so much mechanical grip that it’s difficult to find the car’s limits, even on a wide, open race circuit. For such a small engine, the noise is astounding,
with a turbo whoosh that transforms into an ear-splitting scream at high revs. The race-spec sequential box blips the throttle on downshifts automatically and simply adds to the fast Ford’s hardcore nature. Acceleration is savage, with the EcoBoost covering 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds, and that’s quicker than a Porsche 911 Carrera 4S. Despite the performance, however, Ford are keen to point out that the EcoBoost also scores on efficiency. At a steady 70mph motorway cruise, they claim it will return an impressive 57mpg. The problem is, though, not many of us will have the nerve to
maintain this speed, as the Formula Ford is so intimidating to drive on the road. Also, the ride is really unforgiving and the narrow pedal box and non-existent rear visibility make it hard work - and a race helmet and warm clothing are essential. Still, as a technical exercise to show the flexibility of the 1.0-litre engine, the Formula Ford is a great achievement. If it ever reaches production, a £45,000 price would make it an expensive but fun rival to the KTM X-Bow. And it would enable the lucky few to pretend they’re future F1 stars.

Reality hits home HARD! By Roscoe
CD Tenerife 0 Lugo 1 DEJA VU - I bet you knew I was going to write that! Tenerife fans are starting to believe that for 2013 read 2010.
That’s the last time they were in the second tier of Spanish football. It was the season of four coaches, mercenaries and unthinkable disaster. It started with five straight defeats and no win, until Elche skipped into Santa Cruz in week 10. Well, after last Saturday’s defeat it’s now six games without a victory. And to say the fans are nervous would be a massive understatement. Rock-bottom Real Madrid Castilla have lost all six matches, and they MUST be beaten on Sunday. No ifs, buts or don’t mind if I do’s. They must win. In any way. In any fashion. Three points, or else! Tenerife are at this junction after another toothless defeat. Once Position 1º RC Recreativo
to the standard. He was magnificent for CD Marino in the fourth tier and had a fine year in the third as Tenerife came up. But this season he has found it tough - and sentiment gets you only so far in football. Every match he has started, he’s been hooked, and on Saturday he was again pulled at half-time. He’s not alone.
again, it was a match that Tenerife dominated but failed to land any sort of attacking threat. Shane McGowan has more bite. Worryingly, a few of the players are being found out. Cristo Martin is a local lad and he has had a brilliant few seasons. The petulance of youth has given way to a gifted, hard-working player. But it’s clear that he is not quite up Points 13

Aitor Sanz has waited a long time to play at this level. He was 29 a few weeks ago and there is no doubt he is trying to make up for lost time. But at the moment, he is playing a different match. It’s almost as though he is trying to swim through treacle. The opponents are one second ahead, and his passing is defensive. He was stupidly sent off on Saturday and, while it could be argued that he was unlucky to get his second yellow card, there is no doubt he did himself no favours. It’s tough at any level to get a result with 10 men, and Sanz’s madness turned a winnable match into a defeat. He has been subbed a few times and, while he is not a lost cause, it’s clear that Tenerife need to try something else in central midfield. This weekend, Iñigo Ros should make his first start of the seasonand at this level. He was Tenerife’s Player of the Year during the last campaign, but that brings no guarantees. It is vital he hits the ground running. He should be partnered by Ricardo, who has done well in his matches so far.
In attack, Tenerife badly need a performance from Aridane, who was a joke against Lugo and has the work-rate of a drunken sloth. And when you are chasing the game with 10 men, you need nine outfield players running through brick walls. I’ve seen Spanish builders work harder on their siesta than Aridane did on Saturday night. And you can’t fool the fans. He owes us a shift. Talking of owing, this could be the start of a big few weeks for Sergio Aragoneses. The club captain has been a rock over the last few years and was one of the few to escape criticism in the double relegation campaigns. But there have been signs recently that he is in decline. He is 37 in February and he was poor again against Lugo. His weak punch led to Sandaza’s goal. It was a schoolboy error and, after iffy displays against Mirandes and Zaragoza, he has a few questions to answer. There is no danger to his place and, hopefully, it’s just a blip. But while he is in poor form, a little hat-tip to Suso, who was everywhere last weekend. And though he doesn’t always produce the
end product, he has the right attitude. He was a little backwards at the start of the season and that was to be expected after a summer operation. But he’s cherry ripe now. And this Sunday, Castilla’s kids are tailormade for him. The visitors don’t deserve to be pointless, and they played well against an improving Zaragoza last weekend. They are essentially the C team who played in Tenerife’s division last season. They are at the start of their new “cycle” and the kids will do well to avoid relegation. Gran Canarian Jese is now firmly established in the first-team squad, as is Morato, who is one of the hottest young talents in world football. Rozzi, 19, and 18-yearold Tomas are a few years down the line, while Sobrino and Burgui are good, if not great. The player to watch is Omar Mascarell. The Santa Cruz-born midfielder is a real player, and I have been hoping for 18 months that he would be pinched on loan. He has taken the step up to the second division in his stride. Unlike an American, I’m sure you can see the irony

Picassos brush leaders aside TWO teams were still holding unbeaten records going into week 15 of the Oasis Fm Darts League. Not any more. Division 2 outfit Tenerife Sun have been merrily blowing away all the opposition and, seemingly, cruising to the title. They were stopped in their tracks, however, by a Picassos team who put them on the canvas, as they say! But the big winners on the night were Emerald
Shamrocks. who now have a firm grip on second spot after thumping Barracuda Hunters, and Bar 180 D losing heavily to The Rebels. Can they catch Tenerife Sun? We will see. There are some amusing nicknames among our darting fraternity, and none more amusing than Rudi Sexi Sox. He (or she) hit the winning double in the trebles leg to earn Amistad 2 a draw at La Caña Lancers. Elsewhere, Sundown-

ers took six points from the Playgirls and Pas O Nadas beat Phoenix Flights by the same margin. Division 1 Gaffers B slipped up in their chase for top spot as fifth-place Chipeque held them to a draw, with Dave hitting his first 180. The damage could have been worse for Gaffers though because Rood were pushed hard by Trap Door and just beat them 5-3. Emerald Lounge used
their experience to get the better of heir local rivals and young guns Bar 180 B, while Bar 180 C took the last rubber to claim victory over Marilyns. Barracuda Bytes also nicked the last leg for a win at Summerland, and Naughty Nautas’ six-point haul from Amistad 1 moves them out of the bottom three. Just five ties in the Premier League last week, and five home wins. Bar 180 A produced their fifth white-
wash of the season and, for the second time, against Ourplace Playboys. Jamie checked out on 121 for the San Blas team. After a period of indifferent form, Palms Sports Bar got back to winning ways with a 6-2 success over Vikings Ensecan. The Pub’s Calvo hit his first maximum during their fine performance in the 7-1 thumping of Target Titans 7-1. Dave replied with his own 180 for the visitors.

And after their fifth consecutive win, it would be fair to say that Target Army are having a fine season. In fact, you have to go back to 28th June for their last defeat. Last Friday’s 6-2 win over Ourplace Naturals was no surprise, then, and keeps them in third place. But Phoenix Bar, with a game in hand, might be breathing down their necks in the coming weeks. Bluetrail training
The scheduled activities in preparation for the Tenerife Bluetrail began in earnest last weekend. This weekend sportsmen David López Castán from Spain and La Gomeran Crístofer Clemente Mora talk about their mountain sport experiences and the technical challenges that the competitors will face in the Tenerife Bluetrail on the 19th October. David López Castán has been runner-up in both the European and World Championships. Trail runner Crístofer Clemente Mora recently had a successful race in the 83km Natur Solomon Trail Transvulcania 2013. Tomorrow (Saturday) there’s a training session between Vilaflor and Portillo, with around 100 participants - and it continues on to Los Realejos on Sunday. More information www.tenerifebluetrail.com

Sport In Brief Richest sprint of all
ONE lucky jockey will win a staggering 4.8 million euros next Sunday (6th October) for a rapid 2min 30sec sprint. Those lining up in Europe’s richest race - the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe - can become a sporting legend, based on earnings per minute. In sterling, the Qatar race equates to £2,230,000 for winning connections. The 1½-mile race takes under three minutes to run resulting in a £743,333 per minute dividend, which makes Cristiano Ronaldo’s £14 million annual pay by Real Madrid, at £2,890 salary per minute, seem reasonable!
England to lose Walcott
ARSENAL winger Theo Walcott will miss England’s World Cup qualifiers against Montenegro and Poland after having abdominal surgery on Wednesday. The 24-year-old did not play in Arsenal’s win against Stoke on, despite being pencilled in initially. “He will be out for a few weeks,” said manager Arsene Wenger. “He developed some damage to his posterior abdominal wall. It wasn’t a hernia but a little structural problem in his abdomen.” Wenger added: “We are pleased it has been dealt with quickly and he shouldn’t miss too many Arsenal matches. But he will miss the forthcoming international matches with England.”
Aussies bank on Hick
FORMER England batsman Graeme Hick, who was born in Zimbabwe, has been appointed High Performance Coach at Cricket Australia’s centre of excellence in Brisbane.
The 47-year-old appeared in 65 Tests and 120 one-day internationals for England. He scored 3,383 Test runs at an average of 31.32, and hit 3,846 runs in ODIs at an average of 37.33. He played county cricket for Worcestershire, scoring 136 tons in 25 years at first-class level, with a top score of 405 not out against Somerset in 1988. Hick’s job will focus mainly on the development teams, including Australia A and the Under19s.
Rock-bottom Di Canio axed
PAOLO Di Canio became the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season when Sunderland gave him his cards following their 3-0 defeat at West Bromwich on Saturday. It was their fourth loss in the opening five games, which have yielded just one point, and it appears that a players’ protest was the final straw for him.

A football match, by Royal Appointment FOR the first time in its centuries-long history, Buckingham Palace will stage a football match between two of Britain’s oldest teams.
With The Queen’s permission, the pitch was marked out by Wembley groundsman Tony Stones in preparation for the 7th October showdown between Civil Service FC and Polytechnic FC to help mark the Football Association’s 150th anniversary. In gardens which normally host parties and visits from Heads of State, Mr Stones, together with Palace head gardener Mark Lane, measured out the pitch. Mr Lane said: “When I first heard about it, I thought it was quite an exciting prospect. This is something we’ve never hosted before. “There was a boxing match back in the mid1950s, but a football
match is quite a unique opportunity to use the garden for a different event.” Prince William, as FA president, has been one of the driving forces behind the idea. But he did need permission from his grandmother! The Prince will host the event, and will present medals to 150 grassroots volunteers in recognition of the time they have given to the game. He said: “In our 150th year, it is hugely important for the FA to hon-
our the efforts of the many thousands of volunteers who, week in, week out, help to provide the opportunity for millions more people to enjoy football at grassroots level.” The Palace lawn has already been seeded in parts to repair wear and tear following a busy summer of activities, including the Coronation Festival. Stones said: “We treat every game the same, so everything gets 100% care - whether it’s a company day, a game at Buckingham Palace or
the Champions League final. “This will be fine to play football on because it’s in good shape. We’re quite busy back at the stadium, so we’re getting it all marked out so when we come on the day, we can just mark it out again.” Civil Service FC are the sole surviving club from the 11 clubs who founded the FA in London’s Freemasons’ Tavern in 1863. They later drafted the 13 original laws of Association Football. Polytechnic FC were formed in 1875.
FULHAM FORCED TO DROP JACKO! THE controversial Michael Jackson statue has been removed from outside Fulham’s stadium and returned to Mohamed al Fayed.
It was erected 2½ years ago at the request of the club’s former owner, a close friend of the late superstar, to the dismay of Fulham fans. Stonemasons removed the 7ft 6in statue from behind the Hammersmith Stand on Wednesday. Fans who opposed it vehemently were told by the former Harrods owner: “Go to hell”. Jackson, who died at 50 in 2009, visited Craven Cottage just once,
to watch a game against Wigan in 1999 as a al Fayed’s guest. Fulham’s new chairman, Shahid Khan, at the helm for just a few
months, had obviously listened to advice from fans to get rid of it. In a statement on the Premier League club’s website, he said: “Cra-
ven Cottage means the world to generations of Fulham supporters, and I have heard from many of them over the past two months. “Our supporters’ views on the statue have been made clear. I respect Mr al Fayed and know he had good intentions in paying an individual tribute. “However, the removal of the statue is the right thing for Fulham Football Club.” When it was unveiled in April 2011, al Fayed claimed football fans loved the statue and added: “If some stupid fans don’t understand and appreciate such a gift, they can go to hell.” He sold the homely west London club to Mr Khan in July after successfully reviving the once-ailing outfit.

La Caña in seventh heaven
YOU would have got long odds on Bar La Cana A winning their first seven matches at the start of the season in the Direct Telecom Pool League.
The Los Abrigos army have made a stunning start to the season, and there is no sign of their run coming to an end. On Tuesday they thrashed The Peacocks, who had been going well, 10-2, in a result that suggested they may be able to mount a title challenge. There is no weak link in the side, as Peacocks discovered. They are level at the top with defending champions Tenerife Hammers A, who are also 100%. But after a couple of tight victories, they had a smooth 9-3 derby win over Hammers C. Gaffers A lead the chasing pack, but they were pushed all the way at Inn The Pink A. Gaffers were 3-0 up early on before Pink came back thanks to
wins for John (over Lee) and Ricky (Ashley the victim). Neil then sevenballed John and, with Kev also in the win column, the match looked over. Daniel pulled one back for Pink and, when Ricky and Daniel won again, it was all to play for at 6-5. But cometh the hour… and boss-man Neil grabbed the match by the horns. He calmly sunk the balls to record a match-winning sevenballer over Gareth to take the spoils. The Phoenix teams are still in the title hunt. Potters chopped down Treehouse A 8-4, while Knights had it a little tougher at Dreamers A. They were 3-0 up before the hosts woke up, and Knights had to nail the last frame to claim the win. Hat-tip of the week goes to Exiles A, who were in the form of their lives as they beat Palms A 10-2, while Toscales A got their first point of the season as they drew at Terrace A. Aside from Gaffers B whitewashing Toscales B, it was a week of watertight matches in

quires eight stadiums only for the World Cup, but Brazil has decided to have 12. Sports Minister Aldo Rebelo has defended the legacy of the stadiums as “centres for sports and non-sports events”, suggesting also that they become venues for conventions, shows and fairs. Jose Maria Marin, president of the Brazilian Football Federation, said earlier this year: “Finding uses for some stadiums will depend on
the creativity, the imagination of the owners and the operators of these stadiums.” Brazilians vented their frustration at the cost of the World Cup by staging protests during the Confederations Cup in June. Many are unhappy at the £8.3bn being spent on infrastructure, including stadiums, ahead of the showpiece event. The country is also forking out for the 2016 Olympics.
