New Iceland opens in San Eugenio THE new Iceland store opened on Wednesday in San Eugenio - the company’s fourth in Tenerife since its humble beginnings in 1996.
Overseas Supermarkets, throughout Europe and the Canaries, now has a total of 14 stores, with more planned. The new store is located in what was the old carvery restaurant in the large Island Vil-
lage complex. An Iceland spokesman told Canarian Weekly: “The store took just under four weeks to completely re-model from the old premises. “And this was down to the dedication of many existing people from
our stores, a great new team of people recruited for the new store and all the contractors involved.” To mark the occasion after the ribbon-cutting ceremony - Oasis Fm’s Roscoe, Maggie Lennard
keyword was announced on air. And the first person to call into the store with the keyword won the bag of shopping – simple! The lucky winner was holiday-maker Paul, who is staying in nearby Malibu Park. Walking with the aid of a stick, Paul told Maggie and listeners of his miraculous recovery after falling down the steps in
Island Village back in February. He suffered a C5 neck fracture and, at the time, doctors feared he would never walk again. But after months of intense therapy, both here in Candelaria and back in Oswestry, Shropshire, on the border of Wales, his life is slowly getting back to normality. The new store will be
open seven days a week, from 9am until 9pm. Bright and airy, it carries over 2,500 lines on grocery products, plus more than 500 frozen and chilled products. The product ranges include fresh vegetables and sandwiches, Cravendale milk, pizzas, Indian takeaway meals and ice-cream. Also, Iceland’s San Eugenio branch will
be introducing fresh bread, baked on the premises. And it also has a café bar with a lovely terrace, complete with swimming-pool views. You can enjoy freshlyground coffee, a glass of ice-cold beer or even a full English breakfast. The café bar is open from 9am to 8pm and snacks are available all day.

Tenerife Blue Trail The Tenerife Bluetrail, organised by Tenerife Cabildo takes place tomorrow (Saturday).
Competing will be last year’s winner, Santi Obaya, the Asturian athlete who is one of the favourites to win the 101km Ultratrail. He arrived earlier this week to the island accompanied by his brother Samuel Obaya, who will be taking part in the shorter 51km Trail. Athletes shared a few minutes with the president of Tenerife Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, at the finishing point of the race, in Puerto de la Cruz. The Bluetrail Tenerife is the highest mountain race in Spain and the second in Europe, and this year, in the early hours of tomorrow, 1,124 athletes from 20 countries will be battling it out.

Good Samaritan or just a mug?
GOOD Samaritan: “A kind person who helps another in difficulty or distress” (Luke 10: 30-37).
Or Mug: Brit slang - a gullible person, esp one who is swindled easily. In this instance, my personal opinion is that the dividing line is very thin and the outcome depends on fate. You’re wondering what I’m rattling on about, so picture the scene. A man walks into a bar, car keys in hand in the weird and whacky hours of the early morning. Not seemingly under the influence of drink or drugs, he proceeds to tell you in Spanish the following story: He leaves work (Iberostar, Hotel Bouganville, Costa Adeje) only to find he needs petrol. Goes to the bank (Santander) to get money for petrol. Hole in the wall swallows card. Now he has a dilemma, no cash: no card, no fuel - and he needs to travel home to Santa Cruz. After recounting this story and complaining
that no one on the strip speaks Spanish, he asks for 20 euros for fuel. You’re then left with a moral dilemma: is this a scam or is the story really true? You want to help as you’d want someone to help you if you were in this predicament. So, do you: A: Refuse? B: Buy a can of petrol? C: Be the good Samaritan, lend 20 euros to a complete, random stranger and hope that he returns it? All the permutations of the story then run through your head: Why not just return to the hotel where you work? Why go to a strip of British bars? Why go to the cash machine to get cash? Why not just get petrol with your card? Unless, of course, at the time of night, he’d have to pay first before filling up. He may have already been refused and didn’t add this bit to his story. I opted for (c). Until next week. I’ll wait to see whether the 20 euros is returned. LOL

Old cars crash more MOTORISTS are to be alerted about the dangers of driving old cars without ensuring their safety with regular checkups.
The average age of cars in Spain and Tenerife is 12 years and four months. María Seguí, head of the General Directorate of Traffic (Dirección General de Tráfico, or DGT) stresses that crashes in cars over 15 years old are more likely to result in death or serious injury,. Now, as a warning, owners will be posted a copy of their vehicle registration documents, reminding them of the age and safety features of their cars in the next few weeks. Seguí stresses that drivers of cars over the age of 15 years are more likely to suffer serious injuries or death in the event of an accident. But, Seguí says the ministry of industry’s Plan PIVE has been a huge success, allowing owners to get a healthy trade-in price for older cars as scrap to offset against the costs of a brand-new
one, as it saves drivers thousands of euros and has reactivated the flagging motor trade in Spain. Some owners say they have been paid more for their cars as scrap value upon trading them in than they would have done by part-exchanging them as an on-road vehicle for resale before the Plan PIVE was launched when their car was much newer. Seguí says greater surveillance of speeding will be gradually introduced, especially on minor roads and in towns, where the majority of fatal accidents happen.
Next year, certain stretches of motorway will see their speed limits increased to 130 kilometres per hour from the current maxi-
mum of 120 kilometres, but the DGT boss says plenty of notice will be given and these areas will be properly signposted.
Seconds out for boxing bonanza BOXING returns to the Xtreme Fitness gym in Las Chafiras next Friday (25th Oct) with a nine-bout show. And with three gym members in action, including Simon Taggart, who works at JR’s bar in Golf del Sur, there will be plenty for supporters to cheer.

Wear your poppy with much pride
THIS year’s Poppy Appeal campaign runs from 26th October until 11th November, which is Armistice Day.
And Remembrance Sunday is always the second Sunday in November – the Sunday nearest that date. Every poppy helps the Royal British Legion to support the British Armed Forces, past and present, and their families - both in the UK and overseas. There is no minimum donation and your contribution truly counts, whatever the amount!
A beneficiary and her two young children, recently supported by the Legion in Spain following a family breakdown wrote: “I cannot thank you enough for all your hard work and help that you have offered to me at this difficult time. “You have been so kind and helpful, and I really don’t know what I would have done.” It is a matter of personal choice whether people chooses to wear a poppy, and also how they choose to wear it. There is no right or wrong lapel, leaf position, time of day, or start date to wear one. The best way to wear a

poppy is to wear it with pride. The correct time to wear a poppy is whenever you feel that you want to stand shoulder to shoulder with all who serve. Traditionally, our Poppy Appeal runs for the two weeks leading up to Armistice Day or Remembrance Sunday, whichever is later. Poppies are offered during the campaign, but you can wear a poppy all year round to show your support for the Armed Forces’ community past and present – whether it be a pin, brooch, wristband or the paper poppy.

A TENERIFE driver has been sentenced to four months’ community service, plus a 360euro fine for displaying a false disabled parking badge. Local La Laguna police spotted the vehicle with its false documentation in Taco, last September.
Daniel‘s relative dies here
THOMAS ROCHE, father of Daniel O’Donnell’s wife, Majella, has passed away here in Tenerife. The Irish singer’s management announced the death on his website in a brief statement earlier this week. It read: “It is with sadness that we announce the death of Thomas Roche Daniel’s father in law, Husband of Marion, father to Michael, Josephine, Majella & Moira, who passed away peacefully at 6.30pm this evening. May he rest in peace.” Hundreds of fans have already expressed their condolences to the couple through social media.

After 31st January, Euro-zone banks will not accept any DWP direct payments without these details. If the DWP does not already hold them, you will soon receive a letter asking for them. You should complete the attached form and return it to them as soon as possible. Failure to do so may mean your payments being stopped. You can get the IBAN and BIC details from your bank account statement, or directly from your bank. If you have not received a DWP letter, it
may mean it has your details already, so you don’t need to do anything further. Those who have their pension or benefits

Who’s up for this Ceilidh? TENNIS star Maria Sharapova, ranked world No3, has spent a week recuperating from injury at the Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque, in Costa Adeje. The Russian beauty has been getting help from therapist and friend, Michal Novotny, for a nagging right shoulder injury at the recovery clinic. Maria said in her official Facebook account: “My shoulder has improved a lot in the last week, and I can finally start my rehab before going back on the court. “I could not have been in a better place to work and relax. Thanks for the hospitality and love of all of you. Hopefully, I will come back soon, not for rehabilitation but on vacation.”
Doctor’s charred body
THE authorities have confirmed that the charred body found in a burnt-out car earlier this week in Guimar was that of a 68-year-old, retired Candelaria doctor. An autopsy has been carried out but, as yet, no confirmed results have been released. The Guardia Civil are investigating various theories, including that there was more than one killer, that it was an accident meant to scare which went horribly wrong, or that it was financially-related to one of the companies of which he was a director.

A rare whiskey takes the biscuit THE Lions Club of Santiago del Teide held their annual Gala Charity Night on Saturday in El Marques, Puerto de Santiago. Supported by over 100 guests and with the generous sponsorship of a number of local companies, they raised 3,000 euros. It will be spent on providing food and basic necessities for many local families suffering in these harsh economic times, as part of their ongoing programme which started in October 2011. As always, the buffet was magnificent, and brilliant entertainment
was provided by talented guitar duo Nexo, plus the incredible Ryan East. Highlight of the evening was an auction for a rare 1981 Single Malt Whiskey, kindly donated by Mr David Urquhart. An incredible 500 euros was the winning bid, made by local resident Richard Thornley. Sue tees up for Helping Hands
SUE GLADWIN, 2012 captain of Amarilla Golf Club, held several events throughout the year and raised a fabulous sum of 3,095 euros for her chosen charity, Helping Hands. The money was used to purchase muchneeded physiotherapy equipment for Guargacho’s CEE Disabled School. Liz Montague, who runs Helping Hands, said the director of the school, along with all the staff, were extreme-
ly grateful to Sue and her supporters for this vital equipment for the children. In the last 12 months, Helping Hands has lifted the school staff by purchasing many items of which they were in desperate need. Big boost for online buyers NEW Spanish legislation to improve consumer protection for online purchasers will give them a longer period to seek refunds and return faulty goods.
Until now, buyers wanting their money back had to ask for it
within seven days, but this has now increased to two weeks. And, where the seller does not specifically inform the customer of the time limit, it will be extended up to one year. Buyers must also be prompted to accept the final price, so that hidden extras cannot added after the purchase is made. Greater rights for the
consumer concerning delivery timescales, and the risk of loss in the post or damage to the product, are included in the new law, which also covers telephone purchases. These are not considered binding until the customers have either signed the offer papers or sent their written agreement by fax, letter, email or text message.
Ana Mato, Minister for Health, Social Services and Equality, is behind the new law, now in operation, and says it will improve the confidence of those buying online. And this, in turn, will give companies who sell their products and services on the internet a boost in trade as customers begin to trust online services more.

Grant approved for Tenerife’s athletes The Cabildo of Tenerife has approved a grant of 53,438.59 euros to help athletes and sports clubs compete outside of the island. During the months of May and June 2013, 567 athletes benefited from the fund. The further grant was agreed at a meeting of the Tenerife Cabildo, last Monday.

Opera for all President of the Tenerife Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, has announced a participatory concert called, ‘Grandes coros de opera’ which will be held on November 2nd at the Tenerife Auditorium Adán Martín in Santa Cruz. This initiative, organised by the “La Caixa” Foundation and CajaCanarias, allowS about 200 music fans to interpret choral symphonies, by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra under
the baton of Marzio Conti. The presentation ceremony was attended by regional director of ‘la Caixa’ in the Canaries, Andres Orozco, President of the Management Committee of the Foundation CajaCanarias, Marisa Tejedor, and Island Councillor of Culture and Heritage, Cristobal de la Rosa. The musical event is part of the joint work that drives the two entities to develop social
and cultural projects that contribute to improving the quality of life of citizens of the Canary Islands. Participatory concerts offer people that are fond of music the opportunity to participate in an important educational project with renowned professionals. Carlos Alonso commented, “this is an important cultural activity demonstrating the commitment of the Cabildo of Tenerife for Culture.
Similarly, it is very positive that in the current economic situation, these entities and the Corporation come together to work together. Equally important is the list of artists and fans that will be able to work with the great masters of music.” Besides the traditional Handel’s Messiah, other works include Mozart’s Requiem, Carmina Burana by Carl Orff and Coronation Mass, Mozart.
Spot prize for dancing dog? Accion del Sol news AN excellent time was had by all at Sunday’s Accion event at the Terrace Bar, Amarilla Golf, with 300 people turning out in support of the dogs. Popular entertainer Adrian was accompanied by Accion’s ‘Dancing Dalmation’, elegant young dancers showed off their moves, and a cheeky young chap did a wonderful Michael Jackson rendition. There were some super raffle prizes, the children enjoyed the workshop and bouncy castle and the afternoon finished off with a fashion show. A big thanks to the Terrace Bar for letting Accion use the venue, and the performers for giving their time for free. The only missing ingredient was Karen Clack, a much-valued Accion volunteer. We were going to celebrate her 50th birthday at the fiesta but, unfor-
tunately, Karen was ill and could not join us. Accion del Sol staff and all its supporters wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to celebrate her birthday soon. English not the first language for many schools in England! ASTONISHING statistics from the UK’s Department of Education reveal that 90% of students in 240 schools in England do not speak English as a first language.
In the last academic year, its census figures show five primary schools from nearly 17,000 in total - had no native speakers, with 100% of their pupils speaking English as a second language. Sky News visited one of the five schools - the Sacred Heart Primary School in Tipton, West Midlands - which has since admitted three native speakers. Staff at the primary school believe they have a winning formula for teaching children from a diverse community. English is the second language for 95% of

the school’s 128 pupils - the vast majority of them with parents from Pakistan or Bangladesh. Sacred Heart Primary has recently won a regional award for its inclusive policy and standards of education. Head teacher Melanie Gee told Sky News she takes a pragmatic approach: “Our school is really no different from any other. We have a curriculum and all the lessons are taught in English, she said. “We have got bilingual staff. Children in the very early days will probably communicate to the staff in nursery in their home language, but within a couple of weeks we find that they are communicating in English. “The majority of our bilingual staff, if we use them, are actually here to communicate more with the parents than with the children.” Children speak Urdu,
Bengali, Punjabi, French, Polish and Tamil as well as English at the school. Helen Pflaumer, ethnic minority achievement leader at Sacred Heart, said they encourage the children to interact with staff in English for the most part. “There may be an occasion where, if they want to discuss something in more depth, we can say ‘use your home language if that’s going to be easier for you’. “But we obviously tend to feed back in English, largely because of the Englishspeaking teachers. The children pick up English so quickly, and they and the parents are very happy about that.” Occasionally, they need to bring in an interpreter, which stretches the budget. But Mrs Gee maintains that it never compromises the running of the school.

Buy a Picasso for a few quid! AN artwork by the legendary Pablo Picasso, worth around £675,000, will go for as little as £85!
L’Homme au Gibus - or Man With Opera Hat - is being offered as a raffle prize to raise money for charity. It has been authenticated by Picasso’s children, Maya Picasso and Claude Ruiz-Picasso. It will be the first time a work by one of the major painters will change hands in such a way. Olivier Picasso told Sky News that his grandfather would have loved the idea. “He was a pioneer and he was happy to be the first in every kind of situation,” he said. “He was a helpful person, very generous, giving money around him during many difficult times.” The 50,000 raffle tickets available cost 100 euros (£85) each, and the official draw will be held in Paris on 18th December under the strict supervision of Sotheby’s and a court bailiff. The 5m euros which will almost certainly be raised by raffle, will help finance preservation projects in the ancient Phoenician city of Tyre, in southern Lebanon. It was damaged badly during the Lebanese civil war but is now a Unesco World Heritage site. Olivier Picasso and French journalist Peri Cochin, whose Iraqi and Lebanese family have long been involved in protecting Tyre, instigated the raffle project

A double blow for households BRITISH GAS is increasing prices by an average 9.2%, which will affect 7.8 million households.
Peri said: “It’s a dream. So many people would love to have a Picasso and will never be able to afford it, so it really is a dream that could come true. “If you win it and you don’t want to keep it, you can sell it, of course.” Some art lovers might be concerned to see fine art being paraded as a raffle prize, but Times art critic Rachel CampbellJohnston believes this is unlikely to become a trend. “It’s a gimmick to raise money for a charity,” she said. “We’re not going to see Sotheby’s and Christie’s closing down their modern and contemporary sales while everyone buys raffle tickets. “But it’s actually not that democratic at £85 a pop. It’s not going to place a Picasso in a council estate. I’m going to think several times before spending £85 on a ticket.” People can enter the competition from all over the world by purchasing a ticket online. The company is the second major supplier of household energy to hike prices, following SSE’s announcement last week. Electricity and gas prices will rise by 10.4% and 8.4% respectively from 23rd November, which is higher in percentage terms than that of SSE, whose bills will go up by 8.2% from 15th November. British Gas said in a statement: “We recognise that energy bills are a real worry for hardpressed households,
particularly at a time when the cost of living is rising faster than incomes. ”The announcement, which will add about £2 a week to the average dual-fuel bill, reflects the increasing cost of: buying energy in global markets, delivering gas and electricity to the home, and the Government’s social and environmental programmes, which are paid for through customers’ bills.” But the firm pledged that more than 500,000 of its elderly and most in-need customers would be protected by an automatic discount - worth £60 per dual-fuel household - to offset the increase throughout the winter.
British Gas said the discount was on top of the £135 many of these customers will get via the Government’s Warm Home Discount scheme. Ian Peters, Managing Director of British Gas Residential Energy, added: “I know these are difficult times for many customers, and I totally understand the frustration that so many household costs keep on rising, when incomes aren’t keeping pace. “We haven’t taken this decision lightly, but what’s pushing up energy prices are costs that are not all directly under our control, such as the global price of energy, charges that we have to pay for using the national grid that
delivers energy to the home, and the cost of the Government’s social and environmental programmes. “Energy efficiency is the best way to keep bills down, and I encourage anyone who has not benefited from them to go online and check if they are eligible.” Tellingly, shares in SSE and British Gas-owner Centrica fell sharply in the wake of the announcement, wiping a combined £2.7bn off the value of the firms. Energy-bill prices sparked a political frenzy last month when Labour leader Ed Miliband pledged to freeze prices for 20 months if his party won power at the 2015 general election.
Paul pots life story on film A FILM has been made about the life story of Paul Potts, the opera singer who took the first Britain’s Got Talent show by storm in 2007.
One Chance, which premiered last night (Thursday) in London, traces the Welshman’s incredible rise to stardom. It charts his journey, all the way from childhood to the moment he startled the BGT judges with his rendition of Nessun Dorma.
He is played by Gavin & Stacey star James Corden, and Potts, a former mobile phone salesman from Port Talbot, in Neath, said: “It was quite interesting to see James try to take on Nessun Dorma and pick up some of
my mannerisms. “The strangest thing for me was seeing his mouth moving, but my voice coming out of it.” Potts endured a tough childhood, a victim of persistent verbal and physical bullying. Corden said: “This is
about a boy who grows up in an industrial steel town and dreams of being an opera singer in a town where no one even listens to opera, let alone wants to be an opera singer. “Through endless adversity and through so many hurdles he has to jump, he doesn’t give up.” The film, which opens in the UK next Friday (25th Oct), also stars Julie Walters as Potts’ mother, Colm Meanie as his father, Mackenzie Crook as his best friend and Alexandra Roach as his supportive, longsuffering wife.

Four upcoming films will mark the end of Agatha Christie’s Poirot, and see David Suchet reprise his iconic role as the world famous Belgian detective for the very last time. After the final film has aired every major literary work by Christie, featuring Hercule Poirot, will have been adapted. Set against the backdrop of the impending WWII, the first film, The Big Four, plunges Poirot into a world he has never been before – one of global espionage. The public are in panic after the shocking death of Russian grandmaster Ivan Savaranoff (Michael Culkin) and Poirot must try to determine the good guys from the bad, as a complex plot sees a host of international figures used like pawns. The film welcomes back iconic characters Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser), Inspector Japp (Phillip Jackson) and Miss Lemon (Pauline Moran). But the match has barely begun, when suddenly Savaranoff collapses - dead! Panic quickly spreads when Ryland suspiciously disappears. Daily Comet journalist, Tysoe (Tom Brooke), covers every development in great, sensational detail, claiming the murder to be the work of a group of ruthless political agitators, tagged as the ‘The Big Four’. Then when Jonathan Whalley (Peter Symonds), the biographer of the Peace Party’s Chinese leader, is also strangely and brutally murdered, the Big Four have the attention of Hercule Poirot and the world. Tysoe is keen to join forces with Poirot, an anonymous source has been feeding the journalist information on the Big Four, apparently a mole from within. Poirot and Japp decide to pool resources with him when it appears that his informer is murdered – leaving behind evidence, which suggests this dissident and dangerous group is in fact none other than the Peace Party! A theory only reinforced by the disappearances of Ryland, and then Madame Olivier, shortly after the murder of unassuming conciliator Paynter. Poirot realises that each of these crimes is so dramatic and expertly stage-managed as to be almost theatrical… and the murderer must indeed be a master of disguise in order to pull off such varied and ingenious plans. Through a scrapbook found at Whalley’s house, he tracks down failing actress Flossie Monro (Sarah Parish), whom he believes may unwittingly be at the root of all this bloodshed. However, before he can pursue his theories, Poirot himself is also killed! Or is he? Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser) and Miss Lemon (Pauline Moran) return for the funeral of their old friend, but of course things are never as they seem, and soon the theatrics of the Big Four climax with a deadly final act – but on whom will the curtain fall this time?

Actor Larry Lamb presents an appeal on behalf of the British Tinnitus Association, a charity which provides vital support for the millions of tinnitus sufferers in the UK, and which funds ground-breaking research to help find ways of treating the condition. The BTA is a charity close to Larry's heart as he was left with tinnitus after contracting malarial fever. The film features Richard, who acquired tinnitus through years of working around noisy machinery. Initially he coped, but the stress of a family tragedy caused the sounds in his head to become constant and unbearable, and his life fell apart. Fortunately he was able to overcome tinnitus by learning a technique called mindfulness meditation, which the charity is helping to pioneer and which it hopes will transform many other lives.

Fox Wars BBC1, 22.35 Love them or hate them, there are 33,000 urban foxes roaming Britain’s suburbia. Fox Wars meets the huggers, haters and shooters who live alongside their increasingly bolder suburban neighbour. Foxes can live 14 years, but most urban foxes only manage two. Some are killed by pest controllers like Tim, who’s been shooting foxes for over a decade, or Lee, who has killed over 2,000 foxes in the last 10 years. But not all pest controllers favour the gun. Foxagon is one of the few humane pest controllers in the UK who specialise in moving foxes on rather than destroying them. They claim to have so far saved the lives of more than 200 foxes. Foxagon’s owner Terry says: “It all runs in harmony, if you start taking out what you don’t like, the squirrels, the foxes, the badgers, you end up with nothing.” Terry would have a hard time convincing Janet, whose beloved garden in Newport, south Wales, has been persistently and pungently fouled by foxes. Janet has big plans for her garden fox: “I will put 20,000 volts through it. I will fry it,” she says. This approach would not sit well with Nobby, a resident of Brookside, a suburban street in north London. There are 16 foxes for every square mile in London and while most live off a diet of food scavenged from dustbins, Nobby lures them into his garden with a far tastier dinner of dog food and biscuits, much to the chagrin of his neighbours. Sofia, a few houses downwind of Nobby, has to take extreme measures in order to protect her flock of Bantam hens. “If a fox killed my chickens I’d be absolutely devastated. I don’t know what I’d do. I’d probably start shooting them myself.”

A new six-part comedy by Lisa McGee which follows the antics of four Northern Irish twenty- somethings living in London. Ardal O'Hanlon plays Da to Conor and his sister Bronagh, who live with friends Packy and Niamh. Ma is played by Tracey Lynch. For these four friends it's about having the craic in the world's greatest city. But often their sense of normalcy doesn't always match up with the world around them. In episode five, it's the morning after St Patrick's Day and the gang wake up in a strange flat in East London. They have no idea how they got there or what happened last night, but half of Conor's Twix is missing, Packy's legs are hurting and the notorious Aoife McBride keeps calling him. Niamh then finds a photo on Packy's phone that needs some explaining.

The Great British Bake Off Charlotte Moore, Controller of BBC One, announced today that the hit BBC Two show, The Great British Bake Off, will move across to the nation’s favourite channel for its fifth series next year. The award-winning series, made by Love Productions, has been a phenomenal success on BBC Two since launching in 2010. Over the four series the show has grown in popularity to win record ratings, with audiences flocking in to see experts Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood judge the ultimate amateur baking competition presented by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins. Widely credited with reinvigorating baking throughout the UK, the series is currently the highest rating on BBC Two this year, so far averaging 7 million/27.7% share (consolidated data), and a peak audience of 7.2 million who tuned in to watch last year’s final. Charlotte Moore says: “I’ve championed The Great British Bake Off from the very start and believe the time is absolutely right to bring the show to an even broader audience on BBC One. I’ve watched the series grow over the last few years and earn a special place in the nation’s hearts. Joe Crowley presents the series revealing the potential that vacant properties can offer prospective buyers. In this episode, Joe meets Josh Spencer and Samantha Weir who have just bought two adjoining empty cottages in rural Lincolnshire. They are keen to share their plans to turn the two properties into one house, on a very tight budget - and keen to get as much guidance as they can. The balance of the Whyte family household is rocked when Elaine makes the surprise announcement that she thinks she might be pregnant. Tom has not taken the news of the two previous pregnancies well in the past, having found the idea of being a dad somewhat overwhelming, so Elaine is concerned at how he will react this time. All seems to be fine, until inexplicably Tom starts having food cravings and putting on weight. Tom is not the only member of the family struggling with the news; son Drew is anxious about a new arrival, and asks his grandad Pat to explain where babies come from. Roddy, meanwhile, thinks it is time he got back into the dating scene and takes to the internet looking for love.

Actor Larry Lamb presents an appeal on behalf of the British Tinnitus Association, a charity which provides vital support for the millions of tinnitus sufferers in the UK, and which funds groundbreaking research to help find ways of treating the condition. The BTA is a charity close to Larry's heart as he was left with tinnitus after contracting malarial fever. The film features Richard, who acquired tinnitus through years of working around noisy machinery. Initially he coped, but the stress of a family tragedy caused the sounds in his head to become constant and unbearable, and his life fell apart.

Clangers set to make return to BBC on CBeebies The iconic and much-loved British cult classic animated television show, Clangers, is set to make a welcome return to its home on the BBC after 45 years. The joint announcement is made by CBeebies, Coolabi, Smallfilms and US 24-hour pre-school network, Sprout, who together are co-producing the new pre-school series, with BBC Worldwide for its international channels. BBC Worldwide is also confirmed as the international distributor for the show. The £5 million production is already underway and is set for a highly anticipated return to the small screen in 2015. Clangers, which previously launched on the BBC in 1969, are pink, longnosed, inventive and loveable mouse-shaped creatures who live on a small blue planet, out in the starry stretches of space, not far from Earth. Its surface is peppered with holes topped with metal dustbin lids, which flip open with a ‘Clang!’ to reveal steps down to their home beneath the surface of the planet - containing a series of interconnecting tunnels and caves. Kind and generous creatures, they communicate with distinctive whistles, and a narrator comments on the thrilling and often hilarious events which occur in every episode. The Clangers are a family. The cast of characters consists of Major, Mother, Small (a boy), Tiny (a girl) and Granny. Other favourites returning to the new series are The Soup Dragon, who provides green soup from the soup wells; The Iron Chicken, whose favourite food is nuts and bolts; the Glow Buzzers, who create a magical light inside the caves, and the mischievous Froglets. These and many other peculiar creatures, make a simple, sometimes surreal, but always harmonious world of fun, imagination, exploration and invention, which pre-schoolers and parents alike will enjoy over and over again.

In this episode, Joe meets Josh Spencer and Samantha Weir who have just bought two adjoining empty cottages in rural Lincolnshire. An 'A' for Triple A THIS week’s review has been a pleasure to write – and it could have gone on and on.
On Monday I was in Fanabe and managed to catch Triple A performing at Ye Olde Ocean, a fun pub and showbar on the promenade. These guys are in a league of their own. They are the only threepart harmony group currently working in bars and hotels. Firstly, their chosen genres are Soul and Motown, and what immediately sets them apart is their attention to detail. They were dressed immaculately in identical stage-wear, and not the kind of threads you would get from the high street. This was a pro look and already, I was looking forward to the show. It was noticeable straight away that the tracks they were singing to were all professionally made, with custom arrangements of the songs, which are unique to Triple A. This kind of thing puts the individual stamp on an artiste. Custom tracks like theirs do not come cheap, however. If
you have a Ferrari, you wouldn’t run it with a Ford Focus engine. It really does make all the difference when watching a show and the songs you are singing and dancing along to are slightly different and, in some cases, it feels as though it’s the first time you’ve heard them. Triple A have that effect, and you will probably like their versions better than the originals. So, they know how t o
throw a dress code together and they have amazing backing tracks. Now let’s talk about the magic. Vocal and harmony are two words that go together well, so when the human voice blends with another in harmony, it’s a beautiful thing. When three voices get together it can be mind-blowing. But if one voice is even slightly off-key, the sound produced may not be so pleasing to the ear. That said, I cannot remember a time when I
have heard three-part harmonies performed so exceptionally well. A lot of people in an audience do not understand the mechanics of vocal harmony, but they just know it sounds amazing. It is a pure gift to be able to harmonise, and it takes a lot of rehearsal to get it tight. After their third song into the set, Alejandro, Andy and Adrian had each taken turns to sing as lead vocal, showing their versatility. Andy then introduced the other two to the audience before they continued a set filled with songs from all corners
of the Soul and Motown genres. Triple A are the real deal. There is no act like this in Tenerife, they are respected by the whole entertainment community and they have never failed to exceed audience expectation. The couple pictured have been coming to Ten-
erife now for three years and saw Triple A on their first visit, performing in the Moonlight Bar in Torviscas. Since then, they have not travelled anywhere in the world other than here for their holidays. Simon and Barbara Ward have never missed a Triple A show while holidaying here, and this was actually the 50th time they had seen them perform. Simon said: “I can´t believe I get to walk into a bar and watch these guys for free. I hope they continue to grace these shores with their talent, or we’ll be going on holiday somewhere else.” At the end of the show my thoughts were that the “awe” in awsome had been defined. If you are lucky enough to have this trio on your billboard already, then I’m sure they will be there for a long time. But if you haven’t, and are looking for a vocal show like no other, then book Triple A. You will be amazed.
AS we move into Tenerife’s winter phase, Leonardos is making the last little adjustments to its entertainment programme, and fine-tuning it to perfection. At the end of this month Alexander McRae, from the resident duo Cormack & McRae, will be returning to the UK after 10 years served here on the boards in Tenerife. Most of their last year has been spent at Leonardos, performing five nights a week alongside Aaron. Scott Henderson, formerly part of the award-winning, highly-acclaimed Leonardos duo Loaded, will be joining Aaron Cormack as the resident duo. Also in the line-up will be Tempo 2000. Cory and Marlow will be at Leonardos two nights a week with Aaron and Scotty holding the residency for the other five nights. Resident DJ Luke Warne will be taking over full-time DJ duties and will be there six nights a week. Luke has a natural ability to entertain, and he will work tirelessly to make sure you enjoy yourself, with party games, the best music - and one of the best staff teams in a bar of this kind. Exciting times ahead with the new programme!

Which? is launching a new campaign to clean up the entire credit market after new research finds that other forms of credit can be as expensive as payday loans.
The payday loans market has rightly attracted criticism for some of the worst practices in the credit market, but their new research finds that in some cases using an authorised and unauthorised overdraft with your bank can be just as expensive. Borrowing £100 for 31 days will cost £30 with a Halifax authorised overdraft or £20 with some Santander accounts, and borrowing the same amount for the same time with a payday loan company costs between £20 and £37. The research also shows that, similar to rolling over a payday loan, people can rack up sky high default charges if they use an unauthorised overdraft, and be hit with high interest and charges if they stay in their unauthorised overdraft for long periods. With the Halifax Reward current account and the Santander Everyday Account it can cost £100 in charges
for going £100 into an unauthorised overdraft for a month. The Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) proposed new rules to clamp down on lenders won’t cover high penalty and default fees for payday loans, overdrafts and other highcost credit products. Which? thinks this is a major omission and has launched the Clean Up Credit campaign calling on the FCA to crack down on poor lending and unscrupulous practices across the whole market. We want to hear from consumers about their experiences of using credit, and we will share this with the FCA to encourage it to set tougher new rules. Which? is also fully supporting the crossparty ‘Charter to Stop the Payday Loan Ripoff.’ Developed by Paul Blomfield MP, the Charter will set out a number of recommendations to ensure the payday loan sector is treating borrowers fairly. Richard Lloyd, Which?
executive director said: “The Government and regulators have rightly focused on the scandal of payday lending, but they must not lose sight of the urgent need to clean up the whole of the credit market. High street bank overdraft fees can be just as eye-watering as payday loans. “Consumers need the credit market to work competitively. It’s time to clamp down on excessive charges and irresponsible lending, and to make sure borrowers are being treated fairly whatever form of credit they’re using.” Which? has set out five ways the FCA should act to clean up the whole of the credit market and send a clear message to irresponsible lenders: • Ban excessive default fees and charges – the FCA should require that the level of default charges should reflect lenders’ actual costs, and there should be a cap on the total amount of default charges. • Crack down on
irresponsible lending – the FCA should enforce strong rules on affordability checks that properly take into account a borrower’s income, expenditure and ability to repay the debt, including any outstanding credit commitments. • Put people in control of their credit – end unsolicited increases in credit limits, unauthorised overdrafts should be opt-in only and there must be a limit to the number of times high-cost loans can be rolled over. • Clear and transparent information – the cost of credit and all fees and charges should be transparent, and for high-cost credit should be displayed clearly as pounds per £100 borrowed over 30 days. Credit products should come with clear health warnings explaining the consequences of missed payments. • Swift and early intervention for people in financial difficulty – the FCA should force lenders to freeze charges for borrowers in difficulty, and prevent them from charging interest on high-cost loans beyond 30 days after borrowers default. Lenders must help borrowers in difficulty and refer them to free independent debt advice.
Spanish Inheritance Tax (IHT) - some common myths corrected Since 1994, Wincham has been successfully helping people of various nationalities, who currently own Spanish property, with the burden of Spanish Inheritance Tax (IHT). Over the years we have experienced many misconceptions surrounding the ownership of Spanish property in a UK Limited company as a solution to legally removing Inheritance Tax and some of these are explained below. Spanish Property ownership within a UK Limited Company There is often confusion between a UK Limited Company and an offshore Company. A UK company is not

classed as offshore, and in line with EU treaties, UK Companies cannot be charged the 3% annual tax that offshore companies have to pay in Spain. Following the 2008 UK Finance Act and Budget the Directors of a UK Limited Company are no longer subject to “Benefit in Kind” Tax on the ownership of foreign property. A further advantage of the UK company structure is the ability to offset certain expenses such as council tax bills, maintenance/upgrades, car hire and flight costs for the Directors when travelling to and from Spain. Selling the Spanish Property
The property can still be sold from the UK company should the purchaser prefer not to retain the ownership in the UK company. The advantage of purchasing the property in a UK Company is that there are no Spanish Inheritance Tax implications for the Beneficiaries and no 7-10% property purchase tax payable of the purchase of the company. In addition the seller does not pay the 3% Withholding Tax following the UK Company sale. Costs & Time The UK Corporate structure is a simple solution costing less than most probate and legal fees which also saves
the additional Spanish reporting and taxation burdens for the Beneficiaries. Purchasing / Transferring the property into your children’s names Using either of these methods would mean that you would need to pay Spanish Inheritance tax to keep your own property should your children predecease you. of the property in this transaction. A Spanish Will shields you from Spanish IHT This is incorrect as a Spanish Will can often complicate matters as it may conflict with an earlier Will prepared in the UK and does not eradicate Spanish IHT. A Spanish Will cannot be varied after death and therefore limits the options of the beneficiaries. Don’t inform the Spanish authorities of a death for 4 ½ years Waiting 4 1/2 years before notifying the authorities of the death means that the Statute of Limitations has passed and therefore no tax should be payable. This is tax
evasion and you would be committing criminal offences in Spain as the Beneficiaries only have a 6 month window to Probate and pay the Taxes to inherit the property. The Wincham Solution. NO matter what age you are, no one wants to have tired, old-looking hair.
But holding back the years and making the best of what you have isn’t difficult to do. First of all, check out what type of shampoo and conditioner you are using because these are the building blocks of your hair. And without this basis, it doesn’t matter how well you treat it because it will never look its best. Your shampoo should be low in sodium - not a cheap, supermarket brand – and your conditioner the same. Using low-sodium based products will ensure that they are not stripping out your natural oils. If your shampoo price is the same as your washing-up liquid, then it’s time you invested in something a little more caring for your hair. If your shampoo runs out of the bottle, then its main ingredient is water; it should be thick and creamy, and never runny. Your conditioner should be hard to get out of the bottle, ensuring that it, too, isn’t a water-based product. Protecting your hair is essential here in Tenerife, and I recommend Argan oil to all my clients. It’s the only thing I know that protects,

nourishes and smooths - all at the same time. Using a weekly masque is, without doubt, the best treatment you can give your hair. Leaving it on for hours to let it really “soak” in will repair most damage after only a few treatments. Forget the new shampoos which, manufacturers say, will repair years of damage in just a few washes. If your hair is burnt or split, there’s only one solution: Scissors! Having it cut regularly - that means every 6-8 weeks - is the best form of defence against your hair looking its age. I’ve heard of people going months without a haircut, and then wondering why it is split and needs a few inches off. Even if you are growing your hair, you need
to keep those ends in shape. My record for the longest wait between appointments is 11 years! Can you imagine what it looked like? Hampsters were nesting in it because it was that bad! You cannot leave hair that long and not expect it to suffer. It needs love and attention to keep it looking in top form. It seems that sometimes here, people appear to lose a little of the care they once had back in the UK. So come on girls, it’s never too late to turn your hair around. Just give it some TLC and the results will show for themselves. Love your hair and it will love you back. Mistreat it and it might get mistaken for a Halloween wig!
Our splashers and dashers! SOME 20% of Brits can’t be bothered to wash their hands after going to the loo, making the UK a nation of “splashers and dashers”.
And 10% simply splash their fingers with water rather than wash them thoroughly, while 40% clean their hands for under 10 seconds, which is half the time required to kill germs effectively. This new research, commissioned by hand-hygiene experts Cuticura, also discovered that a quarter of Britons wash their hands just three to five times a day, as opposed to the recommended eight to 10 times. Men, the worst offenders of all, are twice as likely not to use any soap! Despite the low percentage of people washing their hands properly, 10% choose to avoid using public transport for fear of germs. The thing people fear the most is using public toilets, followed by touching door handles and flushing the loo. Yet according to another study, from Initial Hygiene, says this
doesn’t stop 10% of office workers using their mobiles to surf the internet while in the loo - or 5% reading a document in there, increasing the chance of germs and bacteria spreading across the workforce. And what about those people digging in to a bowl of nuts or crisps on a pub’s bar-top? Previous studies have shown faecal E.coli contamination on a wide variety of surfaces, including ice cubes and shopping bags. The presence of E.coli bacteria on any surface is a sign of faecal contamination, and any gastrointestinal infection caused by E.coli is a result of ingesting faecal bacteria from a human being or an animal. Dr Bob Adak, head of the gastrointestinal diseases department at Public Health England, said: “No one would wilfully want to touch or eat faeces, but that is what millions of us are doing every day by not washing our hands. “Many diseases are spread through faecal matter, so, if we all improved our hygiene, this could prevent many infections and stop people becoming unwell.
Dr Lisa Ackerley, a leading hygiene expert, recommends that people wash their hands with warm water and soap, or an anti-bacterial hand-wash for at least 20 seconds, yet the research shows people are cutting that time by half. She added: “With the average person carrying over 10 million bacteria on their hands alone, this is big news in the battle to prevent bacteria and virus spread.” According to Dr Ackerley, good hand-hygiene has the potential to reduce the risk of diarrhoea by up to 47%, and save a million lives worldwide. But the Cuticura research showed that nearly half the people interviewed did not wash their hands properly and aided the spread of harmful germs. Dr Ackerley said: “I would recommend washing your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap, or anti bacterial hand-wash, for a minimum of 20 seconds ideally. “Be sure to dry your hands properly after washing, as harmful bacteria spread more easily on wet or damp hands.”

U n d e r s t a n d a b l y, Cancer Research UK said it was a “huge burden”, and Sara Osborne, Policy Head of the charity, added: “This study reinforces why research is vital to improve our understanding of the causes of cancer. “In that way, we can lessen the impact of the disease and develop better ways to prevent and treat the illness.” The figures, published in the Lancet Oncology, included the cost of drugs and healthcare, as well as earnings lost through sickness, or families providing care. Lung cancer was the most costly form of the disease, accounting for more than 10% of all costs in Europe

The University of Oxford and King’s College London research team analysed data from each of the EU’s 27 nations in 2009. They showed the total cost was 126bn euros and, of that, a total of 51bn (£43bn) euros was down to healthcare costs, including doctors’ time and drug costs. Lost productivity, because of work missed through sickness or dying young, cost 52bn euros (£44bn), while the financial burden to families providing care was put at 23bn euros (£19.5bn). Overall, richer countries, such as Germany and Luxembourg, spent more on cancer treatment per person than eastern European countries, such as Bulgaria and Lithuania. Lung cancer tends to affect people at an earlier age than other types of the disease, so the lost productivity through early deaths is a major factor. However, the overall economic burden falls behind the costs of dementia and cardiovas-
cular disease. An EUwide study, by the same research group, revealed that cardio-vascular diseases, including high blood pressure and strokes, cost 169bn euros (£144bn) a year while dementia costs 189bn euro (£169bn) in just 15 countries in
Western Europe. Dementia has extremely high costs, associated with long-term care, while cardio-vascular diseases include such a wide range of conditions that it affects many more people than cancer. One researcher,
Dr Ramon LuengoFernandez, from the Health Economics Research Centre at the University of Oxford, said: “By estimating the economic burden of several diseases, it will be possible to help allocate public-research funding towards the
diseases with the highest burden, and highest expected returns for that investment.” Professor Richard Sullivan, from King’s College London, said: “It is vital that decisionmakers across Europe use this information to identify and prioritise key areas. “More effective targeting of investment may prevent healthcare systems from reaching breaking point - a real danger given the increasing burden of cancer - and in some countries, better allocation of funding could even improve survival rates.” Ms Osborne, from Cancer Research UK, said: “The financial impact that cancer has on the economy across Europe because of people dying prematurely from the disease, and time off work, remains a huge burden. “We also need to understand why the UK’s cancer mortality rates remain higher than many EU countries, despite a similar outlay on cancer care.”
Drugs row: Canaries planning legal action THE pressure on patients to pay for drugs dispensed in hospital is proving too much for the Canary Islands’ regional government. Ministers are so angry that they intend to follow the lead taken by Basque Country rulers and take legal action to prevent patients having to fork out. Andalucía has already appealed through the courts, saying: “It is an attack on the principle of equality by penalising the seriously-ill in an arbitrary manner,” Changes to the State law on 1st October means that any chronically-ill patients must pay 10%, or up to 4.20 euros each, on all medication boxes issued by the hospital dispensary. The charges relate to more than 40 types of medication, and around 4,000 patients will be af-
fected in the Basque Country alone. And no one is exempt, which means that those suffering from cancer, kidney failure, asthma, diabetes, leukaemia, high blood-pressure, psoriasis, HIV, rheumatoid arthritis and hepatitis must all pay up. Although the fee does not extend to drugs given to in-patients or administered by nurses to outpatients, such as chemotherapy, any extra pills or injections which have to be collected from the in-house dispensary are now no longer free. This usual occurs when patients cannot be supplied by high-street pharmacies because of the cost or specialist nature of the drugs, or when the consultant concerned wants to monitor the dosage more closely A number of Spain’s 17 autonomous regions

have absolutely refused to apply the new law. Socialist leader Alfredo Pérez-Rubalcaba, a member of the Government’s opposition party, says it is “cruel to make people pay to stay alive”. And other parties all agree that patients who are among the three in 10 people living in actual poverty will end up stopping their treatment because they cannot afford it. And that will put their lives at risk. If, say, patients need to collect three boxes of medication or single injections a week from
their hospital dispensary, it can cost them up to 50 euros a month. That, say opposition members, is a huge expense for someone on the minimum unemployment benefit of 425 euros a month, or even the 645euro minimum wage. So far, nine regions including the Canaries - have agreed not apply the law, even though they are obliged to by the Spanish Government. Yet many of these federal communities are being run by the Popular Party (PP), which is
Spain’s current ruling Government. As well as the Basque Country, Canary Islands and Andalucía, the other protesting regions are Aragón, Valencia, Asturias, Navarra, Castilla y León and Extremadura. Those who disagree
with the fees on practical or ethical grounds say it will cost more to implement the new computer systems, accounting methods and arrange collection of payments, than the country will actually earn from the medication charges.

Orange and Poppy Seed cake 250g margarine 250g golden caster sugar 5 eggs, large 120g Plain White Flour 120g White Self-raising Flour 50ml Milk Zest of 1 orange Juice of ½ orange 1 tbsp poppy seeds To decorate 100g Golden icing sugar, sifted 2 tsp orange juice Orange & Lemon Slices Method: Oven Temp: 140c (fan)/160c/Gas Mark 3.
Cream together the margarine and caster sugar until light and fluffy. Add the orange zest and beat until evenly dispersed. Add the eggs one by one following each with a
spoonful of the flour. Mix until evenly combined. Sift in the remaining flour and mix. Finally add the milk, orange juice and poppy seeds and fold through until the cake mixture is
an even consistency. Fill the prepared tin with cake mixture and roughly level the top using the back of a spoon. Bake in the oven for between 1 hour 20 minutes and 1 hour 30 mins until well risen and golden. Transfer to a wire rack and allow to cool completely. Mix together the icing sugar to a smooth glaze with the orange juice. Pour over the top of the cooled cake and decorate with orange and lemon slices. Ultimate Chocolate Cake Ingredients: 125g unsalted butter, softened 250g Light Muscovado sugar 4 Eggs 180g self raising white flour 60g cocoa powder 90ml Milk 2 tsp vanilla extract 1 ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda Method: Preheat oven to 160c fan/180c/Gas Mark 4. Grease and base line 2 x
8” cake tins. Sift together the flour, cocoa powder and bicarbonate of soda. Cream together the butter and sugar using a stand mixer of electric hand mixer until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla extract and then beat in the eggs one by one adding a tablespoon of sifted dry mix with each to prevent the mixture curdling. Pour the milk into the cake mixture followed by the remaining flours and mix well to combine. Divide the mixture between the two tins and bake in the oven for 2530 minutes until well risen and springy to the touch. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the tins for 5 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Decorate with frosting Tips: Scrape down the sides of the bowl using a spatula occasionally making sure that the mixture is even. For the ultimate chocolate cake use a good quality cocoa powder.

Kikiriki tickles the taste buds WHAT springs to mind when you think of Sundays? A leisurely lie-in, a selection of the Sunday papers to browse through or a meal out with family?
If the latter is your idea of a perfect finish to the weekend, then here’s just the place for you. Kikiriki, in the Apolo Centre - near the main roundabout in Los Cristianos - has long been regarded as a special venue for excellent food. It has been opening on Sundays for some time now, and diners receive a 40% discount. That’s not all because the discount now applies to Saturdays as well! That makes the weekend really special, and even more appealing if you are planning to eat out. The menu provides another treat because it is spectacular: a true mix of meats, seafood and beautiful vegetarian options. The restaurant is also serving another of its specials: three types of Spanish cured ham - Bellota, Recebo and Reserve - which is priced by the weight, as is done in supermarkets. And with fabulous service and relaxing surroundings, it truly is what Sundays - and Saturdays nowadays are all about. I dined there with
three other people on this particular Sunday and, as I have eaten here on many other weekends, it gave me a chance to taste some of the alternative dishes on offer. We ordered four different starters: Catalan bread, a mix of Mediterranean flavours, malty bread, topped with fresh tomatoes and garlic, all smothered in virgin olive oil; Chopitos, deep-fried baby squid in a fresh, crispy batter; onion cake, a moist, savoury cake infused with salmon; and a special Sunday paella so packed with meat and seafood that it was hard to see the rice. The starters, as with all of the food here, are ultra-fresh and so very, very tasty. The main courses again didn’t disappoint and, as always, I had to have the special Kikiriki chicken. This is their signature dish - a half-chicken, or quarter if you’re not too hungry, perfectly

roasted with rosemary, moist meat and crispy skin. It’s perfect for me, by the way, and this was exactly what I got. It is served with four extremely individual sauces - pepper, blue cheese, Kikiriki special sauce and my favourite, the vicious spicy - all bursting with flavour and all complementing the succulent meat of the poultry so well. The chicken is so nice that it’s hard for me to go past it on the menu. That’s why I was pleased when one of my fellow Kikirikiers plumped for a beautiful fillet of sole instead of following suit. This was also perfectly cooked, and it just fell apart into satisfying, meaty flakes. And with side-orders of garlic potatoes and moreish spinach to accompany all the meals, I was beginning to reach full. Thank heavens for the dessert stomach. I do go on about desserts and it’s because, well, I love

’em. But I can honestly say I would travel miles for Kikiriki’s Lemon Meringue pie. It’s simply stunning, and it is so lemony that it gives you the look on your face of an old dear in a workingmen’s club when somebody talks during the bingo. And with sugarysweet meringue and gorgeous pastry … oh, I’m drooling now. So to recap: all the food we had on this glorious Sunday afternoon was nothing short of wonderful, and the service was, as ever, spot-on. Then we were given the bill, and we could not believe the vast amount of money saved with the huge discount we received. No prizes for guessing where we’ll be heading on a Sunday afternoon in the not-too-distant future.

Easyjet is planning AN Italian Job
EASYJET has announced its expansion plans in Italy with the opening of a base in Naples.
The new base, easyJet’s third in Italy and 24th in its European network, will be operational from spring 2014. Having first started operations in Naples in 2000, easyJet now carries more passengers than any other airline into and out of Naples. In the last twelve months the airline has flown 1.6 million passengers. From spring, the two aircraft based in Naples will enable easyJet to fly more than an additional 350,000 passengers meaning that annual passenger numbers will reach almost two million. Mike Campbell, easyJet Europe Director, stated: “Italy is a key market for easyJet where it has regularly invested and we are delighted to announce that Naples becomes our 3rd Italian base and in Italy’s third largest city. “Naples is a top European destination
both for tourism - the city being listed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO - and for business with a wide network of more than 260,000 companies and 2.6 million business passengers travelling to and from Naples every year.” easyJet will fly 20 routes from the base, five of those will be newly introduced in Spring 2014, and will offer 130 flights a week at peak season from Naples. The airline will fly additional frequencies on key routes such as London Gatwick with two daily flights. easyJet is also now offering “Fast Track” security in Naples for its FLEXIfare customers, making travel even easier by saving time at the Airport. Last month easyJet announced the opening of another key European base in Hamburg next Spring alongside announcing plans to increase its fleet in Berlin. Building on its success to date in both Hamburg and Berlin, easyJet’s new base will open with three A319 aircraft with the airline increasing its fleet in Berlin by an additional plane.
New ‘super’ visa plan for Chinese TRAVELLING to the UK for Chinese nationals will be made easier from next summer.
Their visa applications will have been simplified and streamlined by the British Government by then. As predicted, the three key steps include introducing a pilot scheme to allow selected Chinese travel agents to apply for UK visas. They will simply have to submit the EU’s Schengen visa form, rather than two separate applications, which will reduce duplication for agents taking tourists to both the UK and the Schengen area. A new 24-hour “super priority” visa service will become available from next summer. The expansion of a VIP mobile visa service, currently operating in Beijing and Shanghai, is likely to cover the whole country. This service enables visa teams to visit applicants to collect their completed forms and biometric data, the whole process taking
less than five minutes. Confirmation of the plans came as part of a trade mission to Beijing, led by George Osborne. The Chancellor said: “These changes will streamline and simplify the visa application process for Chinese visitors, while ensuring the system is strong and secure. This is good news for British business and tourism.” Home Secretary Theresa May added: “We are continuing to attract the brightest and best to work and study in the UK, while preventing immigration abuse, and bringing net migration down to the tens of thousands. “Our Chinese visa system already provides an
excellent service, and figures demonstrate that Chinese tourists are increasingly choosing to visit the UK. “We will continue to make further improvements, wherever possible, for visitors travelling independently or as part of a group.” China is regarded as one of the UK’s priority markets for tourism and business. According to Government figures, 210,000 visas were last year issued to visiting Chinese nationals, who contributed around £300 million to the British economy, There are currently 39 weekly air services between London and four cities in China, and the
visa announcement was extremely timely. It coincided with Manchester Airports Group revealing a joint-venture agreement with Beijing Construction Engineering Group, Carillion PLC, and the Greater Manchester Pension Fund to support the development of the £800 million Airport City project at Manchester Airport. Airport City will be the core element of a Governmentdesignated Enterprise Zone surrounding the UK’s third-busiest airport. The aim is to help attract international businesses, which could contribute an additional 16,000 jobs in the North-West.
Ryanair's 2014 Charity calendar Ryanair has announced that its cabin crew have selected the Teenage Cancer Trust as their charity partner for the 2014 Ryanair Cabin Crew Charity Calendar, which it hopes will raise 100,000 euros.
Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity dedicated to improving the quality of life and survival chances for young people with cancer aged between 13 and 24. The charity funds and builds specialist units in NHS hospitals and provides dedicated staff, bring-

ing young people together to be treated by teenage cancer experts. Teenage Cancer Trust also educates young people about cancer to help improve the speed and quality of diagnosis. As Radical as it gets!
By Jav NOT many drivers will have heard of Radical Sportscars, unless they have been involved in motor racing for the past 16 years.
That’s how long the Pe t e r b o r o u g h - b a s e d car-manufacturers have been operating, and in that time they have built the most impressive reputation. They specialise in race and road-car manufacturing, and among their credits include designing the world’s popular racing car (SR3 RS), designing and building their own racing-spec V8 engine. In addition, they have competed five times in the 24 Hours Le Mans race with their Radical SR9 and have completed the renowned Nürburgring Nordschleife faster than any other road-registered and street-legal car.
They have also attained a collection of other lap records and accolades from the worldwide motoring press. So, it is no surprise, then, that they have now come up with the ultimate head-turner: their £97,000 Radical RXC, which is, in essence, a Le Mans car for the road! That’s what Radical set out to achieve with this beauty, and that is exactly what they have done. There is absolutely nothing like it right now! As a track day-car it is simply sensational,
and as a road car it is completely off the scale. So it is hardly any wonder that the firm’s order book is full to bursting. People will always stare at this radical machine in bewilderment when they see it rumbling along the public road. But beneath its Le Mans prototype-like bodywork, complete with full GT3 specification multi-adjustable rear wing, it’s actually a cracking sports car. At its heart, just behind its two racing bucket seats, sits a 3.7-litre Ford V6 which produces either 350bhp
in standard tune or 380bhp with a bit throttle-system tweaking.. In both cases, it is mated to a seven-speed sequential, paddle-shift gearbox, built specifically for the car by Quaife, who also make the torque-sensing differential that’s fitted to it. As the RXC weighs 900kg only, it can sprint from 0-62mph in 2.8 seconds - one-10th of a second faster than a Lamborghini Aventador - and has a power-toweight ratio of 422bhp per tonne. And its top speed, limited by the relatively
short gearing in seventh, is - “just” 175mph, which elevates it to the top of the table when it comes to outright acceleration. At that fantastic pace, Radical claim the RXC produces its own weight in downforce which, on the road, translates to a level of high-speed grip that would leave most drivers laughing in disbelief. At anything under 50mph, you can’t really feel that prodigious downforce. Instead, all you notice is how crisp the steering seems. However, as soon as you venture beyond 60mph on the road, and much speedier on the track, you can feel the stability levels going up, front and rear - and the steering also gets a touch meatier. And yet, if you then really lean on it and get it to start sliding around - there is no traction control and no ABS – the machine is actually well-behaved. The RXC has a unique steering system which allows the driver to dial the level of power assistance, up or down, in five different stages. And for a car that
wears number plates and a tax disc - in other words, street legal - the way it stops is quite outrageous. It also sounds really potent, inside and out. Given the range of exotic noises it gives off under full bore acceleration, you would never imagine that it is driven by a humble Ford engine. One slight drawback of the RXC is the way you climb in and out of it. So wide are its sills that the only way you can enter it, realistically, is by flinging open the gullwing door, then treading all over the seat and inserting yourself into it as elegantly as you can. Proud Phil Abbott, co-founder of Radical Sportscars and current managing director, says: “In the whole history of Radical, I don’t think I’ve been more excited about a new car than I am with the RXC. “It’s the car we’ve always wanted to make and, by applying our extensive knowledge and understanding, we have produced a GT car that - just like our other products - will outperform machinery costing many times more.”

The i-ROAD tilting machine drives like nothing else on the road: it’s a rear-steering, all-electric tricycle, and is also charming and compelling. It’s also a cross between a moped and a car, and the narrow, 850mm width is the key to its credentials as a city runabout. Furthermore, the iROAD is 2,350mm long, so you can fit four of them in a normal parking space, which will certainly be a boon around town. A lithium-ion battery drives two 2kW electric motors in the front wheels, giving a range
of 31 miles and a 28mph top speed. Okay, that doesn’t sound much, but

the amount of torque on offer actually lifts the body of this 300kg car so
it feels as though you’re flying along, rather than rolling.
Turn the wheel and the i-ROAD swoops from side to side with
a smooth, delicate motion. As you slow down, the rear steering quickens up, so you have to get used to turning the wheel less for squeezing through traffic. Akihiro Yanaka, lead engineer behind this project, says: “It takes a while to become accustomed to the way it works, but anyone who has ridden a scooter will get used to it very quickly.” The tandem two-seater, which will surely put a smile on your face, goes into limited production next year ahead of field tests at Japan’s Toyota City, and Grenoble, in France. No prices have been revealed, but it is likely to come in at around £10,000, in comparison with £7,000 for a Renault Twizy and £6,000 for a threewheeled Piaggio MP3 scooter.

Bad luck - or tough luck?
THEY say you don’t pick your team - they pick you. They also say you can pick your friends but not your family.
And there is also a saying which goes along the lines of: “Never have a pet as it will only break your heart.” I’m a Wolverhampton Wanderer, a fan of CD Tenerife and proud to be English. It’s far to say that those three sides have broken my heart over the years. And for us Tenerife fans, the last few weeks have been as trying as any. On Sunday, Tenerife lost at home to recentlyrelegated Mallorca. On paper, it doesn’t look a disaster. Another tight defeat in a season of tight defeats. Former boss Jose Luis Oltra and his side, containing no fewer than three former Tenerife players, just got the edge - and the points.

But this game and result cuts deeper. For the first time, the very first time, I believe we are in trouble. At the start of the season, the fixture gods dealt Tenerife a tough start and we all knew there would be a Points

scary at times. And what makes this situation really frightening as we approach Halloween is the fact that we are actually playing well. It’s the sign of a good side when they can play badly and win. It’s the sign of a doomed team when they play well consistently and lose! In recent weeks, Tenerife have outplayed Lugo, league leaders Recreativo and now Mallorca. And produced no points. As manager Alvaro Cervera put in on Sunday: “I do not know if we are just having bad luck, or maybe we are doing something wrong or if the opposition is right.” A glance at the league table on this page is required. Go on, have a look. Nobody has scored fewer goals than Tenerife. I don’t care what league you are in because four goals in nine games is a joke. Now look at the goals conceded. It’s the same number as second-place Real Murcia. An eight-year-old could tell you what the problem is. For all the
eye-catching football, commitment and toil, it’s all about putting the little white (soon to be yellow) ball in the onion bag. Nothing else matters, as Metallica once sung. Some fans and commentators go nuts over possession stats or pass success rates. Utter rubbish. Just score. And keep scoring. Tenerife squandered so many chances again on Sunday. Llorente hit a post in the first half, as did Ayoze in the second. Aridane had a goal chalked off for offside. He was, but it was tight. On another day… One-on-ones were squandered, corners went begging. And, of course Mallorca notched with their only real chance after another error by Aragoneses. This week, a couple of fan sites and even the Spanish papers have been questioning the form of the Tenerife captain and keeper. But those with memories know I did that here a month ago! The latest defeat is not the fault of the long-serving and ageing
keeper. The outfield players need to score more goals. Oh and try and keep 11 men on the turf On Sunday, Javi Moyano became the fourth CDT player to see red this season. Fans can moan at refs as much as they want, but the Ricardo dismissal aside the sending-offs were understandable. And it’s a longstanding problem. Tenerife fans are used to players picking up cheap bookings and soft red cards. And while the players shoulder the main responsibility the fans at times do not help. Every decision against them is the crime of the century. As is the next challenge. And the one after that. All of a sudden, the ref is under pressure and the players feel wronged. Which leads to frustration. And cards. Tenerife have played well for a few weeks now, and the dressing room must be in turmoil. “How have we lost again?” “We should have battered them.” All understandable. And that mindset is poison. The Mallorca game was the same as the Lugo match and the Hercules game. Tenerife were ahead against Barca B, who equalised, the heads dropped and then they were instantly behind. At Recreativo they were in the ascendancy, went behind, equalised and then conceded straight away. Losing becomes a habit. Going back to last season, Tenerife have now won just three of their last 16 matches. And they have scored in only six of them. Few will expect them to return with any points this weekend, and next Saturday night it’s Deportivo La Coruna. They are starting to find their feet after relegation and have the tightest defence in the league. Oh, and they have won four of their five away games!

WHILE watching the World Grand Prix darts tournament on TV last week, I didn’t actually see a 170 check-out. Not to worry, though, because the Oasis Fm Darts League saw one at Palms Sports Bar on Friday. It came during the home side’s 6-2 defeat of La Caña Pirates and was hit by one of the League’s up-and-coming young guns, Daniel. Well done Sir. I am reliably informed by chairman Harry that it has been done once
before. Obviously, his memory is longer than mine! So unless someone matches it, highest check-out sponsors Direct Telecom will be handing a rather nice cheque to Daniel at the end of the season. Bar 180 A put in an excellent performance to beat Target Army, despite losing the first rubber, and Phoenix Bar battled to a draw with Target Titans. London’s fourth maximum came during that one.

They slipped up at Barracuda Bytes and allowed Rood to increase their lead as they won at Bar 180 B.
Emerald Lounge reclaimed third place after they thumped Marilyns, while Bar 180 C continued a run of poor form and lost 6-2 at Chipeque. They enjoyed a fine evening with the artists, Picassos, and just squeaked the trebles for a 5-3 victory. It wouldn’t be Division 2 without a Los Abrigos derby, and this one was a repeat from three weeks ago as The Rebels faced Pas O Nadas again. The match seemed to be a warm-up for Halloween because, rather spookily, a repeat of the exact previous result saw the Rebels again taking the trebles for a 5-3 win. Déjà vu!

F1 drivers mourn Maria’s death TRIBUTES were paid by Formula 1 drivers following the shock death of 33-year-old María de Villota.
A minute’s silence was held before Sunday’s Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka for the racing driver, who passed away in the early hours of Friday morning. She died in her sleep in a Sevilla hotel as a result of underlying “brain injuries” caused by the horrific crash she had while testdriving 15 months ago. Madrid-born María,
daughter of Spanish F1 legend Emilio de Villota, had been in motor racing since she was 20. She represented her country in Formula 3 and competed in the Daytona 24 Hours Race in the US. Her move to Formula 1 was a source of major excitement to the De Villota family and the motor-racing industry, since she would become the first Spanish woman ever to do so - with a chance of competing at Grand Prix level. But her dream was short-lived. Her first day as reserve and

testing driver for Team Marussia ended in a violent smash, in which she lost her right eye and was left fighting for life. María collided with the back of a lorry at Duxford Airfield, in Cambridgeshire, the first time she got behind the wheel for the Russian team. But she was determined to continue in Formula 1 in some capacity and had been cleared to drivel again some six months after the crash. She had been in Sevilla to speak at a conference aimed at young students about
realising one’s dreams in the face of adversity. And she was to have stayed there until Monday for the launch of her autobiography, Life is a gift. Those paying tribute included both Marussia drivers, Jenson Button (McLaren) and Ferrari team-mates Fernando Alonso, a fellow Spaniard, and Brazil’s Felipe Massa. Condolences were also offered by, among others, the Sahara Force India, Caterham and Sauber teams, while Mercedes and McLaren expressed their shock and sadness.

Dreamers think Pink stink IF it’s tough at the top, it’s certainly rough at the bottom of the Direct Telecom pool league.
Match day 10 saw the lower sides scrambling around for vital points as the campaigns are mapped out. You would have got big odds on Dreamers to be winless at this junction, and they must have thought they had broken their duck on Tuesday night. The Los Cristianos crew have been slow starters all season, but not this time. On Monday, Inn The Pink A were 4-0 down to Palms A in a match they eventually lost 8-4 - and 24 hours later they had made the exact same start. For Heineken, Mark, Roscoe and JT read Ket, Gav, Tommy and Steve as Dreamers made the perfect start. John pulled one back for Pink but when Mark beat Ricky to make it 5-1 the game seemed up. But Pink hung in there: 5-2 became 5-3 only for Tommy to beat

At the top, Tenerife Hammers A are still 100% after swotting aside Terrace A 9-3, despite Jambo losing twice. Gaffers A are now second after beating Tenerife Hammers C 8-4, and La Caña A are in free fall. They won their first seven matches but have now lost the last three.
