No Christmas cheer from Primark... yet!
HUMBUG is the best way to describe the furore created by the press and social media over the past few days in relation to the opening of Tenerife’s very own Primark store.
A large advertising banner has appeared outside the old C&A store in CC Meridiano, Santa Cruz, which is set to house the bargain clothing chain store. There is no doubt that the cheap-as-chips fashion chain store, which has taken the UK, Spain and the rest of Europe by storm, is heading for Tenerife. But this week’s activity and social media spiral led us to believe that it was to be this side of Christmas, bearing in
mind that Christmas is just over eight weeks away. The rumour mill made it sound as though we’d get the feel-good factor by doing our Christmas shopping in ‘Primarni’, especially in these austere times with an increase in IGIC, followed by the Spanish Government’s VAT rises, hitting our pockets. However, we have to disappoint you: in the words of Charles Dicken’s character Ebenezer Scrooge, “Bah! Humbug!” It is simply not true. Yes, at some stage in the future, Primark is coming to Tenerife. But certainly not this side of Christmas. Canarian Weekly has categorically been advised by a Primark representative that the clothing/fashion store is, “not opening in 2013”. Yes, there is an adver-
25th October - 31st October 2013
tising banner suggesting that it’s opening soon, but there is no definition of “soon”. Even in the last few days, new accounts have sprung up, including an @PrimarkTenerife Twitter account, which already has nearly 500 followers, while Facebook has been a hive of activity. A date has not yet been set but the company, which was founded in Ireland, is expected to open the 2,608 square metres of retail space in Santa Cruz some time next year. So there seems to be no doubt about the imminent arrival of one of the UK’s greatest-ever high street successes, which has been triggered by good results posted by the company’s outlets in Gran Canaria, where it opened two stores in 2010. It seems then, that it is all-systems-go in the
capital’s Centro Comercial Meridiano, in the space next door to Zara. The shelves are already in place, just awaiting the stock, as it appears that the company’s trading licence has been approved. So this is where the rumour could have stemmed from. It signals a fantastic coup for Tenerife as far as jobs and the economy is concerned, as well as for British residents, who rely on friends and family to bring their “Primarni” fashions over for them. At one time, the stores in Britain were regarded as places frequented by the less-well-off. Now, however - just like Poundland - even the wealthy are not averse to sifting through the bargain buys. The company has even had an outlet on Oxford Street for the past five years and, needless to
say, that is also proving to be immensely popular. Such is the success of the chain store, which now has 258 outlets all over Europe, that it always posts an annual profit, despite these austere times. Primark opened its first store in June 1969 in Mary Street, Dublin, and spread rapidly all over the British Isles. In May 2006, the company launched in Spain, in Plenilunio, Madrid, and then opened another in Murcia a few months later. The following year saw the introduction of Primark to Jerez and a second store in Madrid, and the phenomenal expansion continued with seven more Spanish stores the following year. Since then, the mainland growth has continued non-stop. A Primark spokesper-
son said: “We are now a well-respected, international brand with a global supply chain, and we take our responsibility seriously to act ethically. “The group is committed to providing the best possible value for customers, but not at the expense of the people who make the products.” From the first Penneys store in Ireland to the latest flagship store in Edinburgh, the Primark story has been one of continuing success, founded on a unique combination of fast fashion and lean operations. Its popular, if hilarious, “Primani” nickname is derived from combining top fashion brand Armani with low-cost Primark to make an ironic word. And of Primark’s 258 stores in total, 35 are in Spain.

Wonder who was William Willett? THIS Sunday morning, in the wee small hours, electronic smart devices will automatically lose an hour, giving us the dilemma: did it change itself?
You sit on the sofa, bleary-eyed with a mug of hot, steaming tea and try to reason as to the correct time. Currently, the Canary Island of Tenerife, albeit under Spanish sovereignty, is in the same time zone as the UK. Therefore, until the morning of Sunday 27th at 2am, we will be on GMT +1, Summer time. As soon as the clocks strike 2am, it’s then time to turn your clocks back by one hour (fall back) to 1am or standard GMT. So, at 2am it becomes 1am, which means an extra hour in bed! British Summer Time, or BST for short, operates from the last Sunday in March until the last Sunday in October. Since 1996 all clocks in the European Union, of which the UK is a member state, have changed
on the same dates and at the same time: 1am GMT (2am as we’re on BST). So, regardless of what you read elsewhere, this is correct. I know because I’ve sourced the info from the Greenwich Mean Time site. This springing forward, falling back has been taking place since 1916, and it was all started by London builder William Willett because the light during the summer mornings was being wasted by people sleeping. The British Government finally adopted the “Daylight Saving System” a year after Willett died in 1915. The bill was passed in Britain on 17th May 1916. Don’t forget to turn your clocks one hour back! Until next week…

Spain exiting crisis Spanish Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, acknowledged that “although we still have a long way to go, we are determined to get there because this is what will guarantee our future and result in sustainable and stable economic growth and job creation, alongside an increase in our well-being and the wealth of all our citizens”. He underlined that if Spain is starting to exit the economic crisis it is thanks to the application of a far-reaching and ambitious plan of structural reforms. “We are laying the foundations for our economy to be more flexible, capable of growing and creating jobs”, he said. According to Rajoy, our economic policy is based on three main pillars: fiscal consolidation at all administrative levels, an ambitious programme of structural reforms to foster business activity, thus improving the operation of our markets and driving competition; and finally,
a far-reaching reform of our financial system to guarantee the solvency of our financial institutions. Rajoy said: “These measures are now starting to deliver “positive results, such as a reduction in the public deficit, more movement in the foreign sector and the recovery of confidence in our markets”. In this respect, he announced that the growth forecast by the government for 2014, after leaving behind the recession in 2013, will be 0.7%. Spain is also a land of opportunities Spain will offer “good and renewed opportu-
nities”, according to the Prime Minister. “We will be delighted to see Latin American companies taking advantage of these opportunities and setting up in Spain, thus continuing with the development of the ever more robust IberoAmerican space”, he said. At a time in which economies are becoming increasingly international, Rajoy highlighted the role “of the Multilatinas companies as the driving force behind the economies, since they contribute to the creation of value and wealth, as well as contributing technol-
ogy, generating jobs and fostering greater integration and cooperation between our nations”. He stressed the need to step up efforts to foster the free movement of people, capital, goods and services within the Ibero-American Community and placed special emphasis on the development of initiatives that facilitate the movement of talent between our countries. “This mobility of talent will help create an Ibero-American business culture and will generate quality jobs where they are most needed, to the benefit of all our societies”, he added.

Adeje, clean and healthy The municipality of Adeje has this week begun its campaign to raise awareness about recycling and responsible pet ownership.
In collaboration with the cleaning company, Ascan Torrabonaf, the “Adeje, clean and healthy” campaign has launched with the main objective being to educate the public about recycling, cleaning common environments and responsible pet ownership. In this regard, the councillor for the envi-
Masters and pupils see red over strike
ronment, Esther Rivero Vargas, said that “this initiative encompasses many areas of activity, from informational meetings in different neighborhoods, through posters, activities in schools, talks within the health
fairs, meetings with veterinarians, animal-related groups, etc..” The campaign started with billboards and bus shelter posters, and yesterday (Thursday) they held their first meeting, which was in Callao Salvaje, at the Cultural Centre. Rivero Vargas wanted to thank the involvement and participation of all the different groups in making the campaign a success.
EVERY door at Madrid’s Complutense University was smashed with a crowbar during a nationwide strike of all public education areas yesterday (Thursday).
In fact, doors were bashed in and demonstrators arrested throughout the day as angry primary and highschool pupils, teachers
and parents, plus university professors and students took to the streets in practically every large town and city in Spain to make their feelings known over education law reforms. These will see rocketing course fees, the axing of grants to cover them, more and more students dropping out of college, class sizes in State schools multiply drastically, and hundreds of thousands of teachers out of a job. In Mérida, in the west-
ern region of Extremadua, demonstrators smashed in outside doors of 15 schools, leading to five arrests. One of the arrested parties was caught inside a school building, and another four in their car, which contained silicone, screws, chains, rubber bullets, superglue and other incriminating tools. Two protesters were taken into custody in Zaragoza for “resistance to authority”, and three wheelie-bins were set fire to in Valencia.
Basque bomber is legally free again! A BASQUE terrorist, imprisoned in Britain after killing 22 people in the fatal Madrid bombings, has been released on probation.
Antonio Troitiño, now 56, was sentenced to 2,200 years in jail for various attacks in the Eighties when he was a member of the terrorist cell ETA. They included that devastating blast in Madrid’s Plaza de la República Dominicana in July, 1986. He was set free following Monday’s verdict by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR)
in Strasbourg, which rejected the retroactive application of the “Parot Doctrine”. But it is unclear whether the British justice system will push for his extradition to Spain. Troitiño was actually released in April 2011 after 24 years of the maximum 30 allowed, with six years off for good behaviour. But that was rescinded following the “Parot Doctrine”, which created a special class of prisoners, for whom time off would be deducted from the total sentence, rather than the 30-year limit. It meant the six years being deducted from his original 2,200-year sentence, so he should have been rearrested and re-
25th October - 31st October 2013
turned to jail to serve the remaining six years. But he had already gone on the run. The terrorist was uncovered in July 2012 in West London, where he had been living under an assumed name. He was taken into custody where he was to remain until his deportation. But his defence team have so far managed to fight his extradition to finish his custodial term in his native country. And the ECHR ruling has left him free again, for now! Whatever happens, Troitiño does not want to return to Spain, but he is likely to be released without further charges if he is forced back.

Improved access to Teide

It takes place on Wednesday (30th Oct) in the Cultural Centre, Los Cristianos, from 7.30pm. The main thrust of the meeting, which is open to the public, is to address the need for hospital transport for cancer patients from the south of Tenerife.
Wedding fair’s double bonus
FEBODA, the wedding fair which took place last weekend in Santa Cruz, was visited by a bumper 6,165 people.
The annual event was held at the International Trade Fair and Congress centre of Tenerife over a three-day period. Efraín Medina, a Cabildo Vice President and chief financial Employment and Economic Development Minister, said the figure was nearly double last year’s total. “We have received 2,945 visitors more, which is great news because it confirms that Feboda has become a benchmark in the sector,” he said.
Swimmer’s heart attack
A 68-YEAR-OLD German woman was admitted to Hospiten Sur, Las Americas, on Sunday afternoon in a serious condition after suffering a heart attack while bathing in an Adeje hotel complex pool, The hotel’s lifeguard carried out life-saving resuscitation until the emergency services arrived.
Would-be smuggler arrested
AN attempted drug smuggler met his match at Tenerife South airport when police nabbed him following his flight from the mainland.
The 24-year-old man, said to have come from Guinea originally, had swallowed more than one kilo of heroin. But he gave the game away with his nervous behaviour when asked to produce his documents. An X-ray proved his undoing by revealing more than 100 capsules in his stomach. He was dispatched to Candelaria hospital to pass the drugs and is now being processed by the courts.

The Cabildo wants to improve access to Teide, one of the biggest attractions of the island. Yesterday it began start asphalting one of four sections of the TF-38 road Boca Tauce – Parque Nacional - Chío.
Jose Luis Delgado, responsible for the Island’s roads said that the goal is to “improve daily access for visitors approaching Teide from the west of the island.” Work will include strengthening both roads and pavements that are showing signs of deterioration; the work will take place during the daylight hours over the coming two week period. It will involve closing a lane and using temporary traffic lights during this period. The cost of the work is 140,878 euros.
Volcanic tourism There are now five areas within Tenerife that can promote Volcanic activities as part of their promotional touristic offer.
This is one of the main achievements of the Competitiveness Plan “Canary Islands, volcanic experience”. In addition La Gomera, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria, as well as central and regional governments and hotel associations of the islands are part of this strategy. “Tenerife, volcanoes of life”, is the instrument through which this activity takes place. President Carlos Alonso, said, “close collaboration between the members of the plan, especially the 31 municipalities Tenerife and the business sector, has been one of the keys to its success.” The president stressed that “we have involved
companies across the island, both service and outdoor activities, restaurants and accommodation, which now, thanks to volcanic territories, have gained greater visibility among tourists”. The creation of five volcanic areas in Tenerife has been one of the main actions of the plan,
which also included other activities such as training entrepreneurs and strategic groups working with guides tourists - official-with knowledge of volcanoes, product creation and marketing. Similarly, there have been efforts to revitalise and attract companies to join the project, with
volcano-related services. One hundred businesses are now involved in the initiative “Tenerife, volcanoes of life”. Overall the ‘Competitiveness Plan Canary Islands, volcanic experience’ has a budget of 3,900,000 euros, of which 1,220,000 corresponds to Tenerife.

The lowest taxi fares in Canaries
FA C UA- C o n sumers in Action has conducted a study on taxi fares in 45 cities across Spain revealing differences of up to 131.7% in trips with similar characteristics.
Tarragona is the city with the highest rates, followed by San Sebastian and Pamplona. The lowest fares are those here in the Canaries in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Arrecife (Lanzarote) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The major differences are the way in which the fares are calculated. Prices vary from 5.33 euros charged in San Sebastián and 2.30 euros in Arrecife, a difference of up to 131.7%. FACUA criticises that
10 of the 45 cities examined had special rates which apply during certain hours on weekends, increasing the price about the nightly rate or a specific rate as in the case of Bilbao, Barcelona, Granada, Madrid, Pamplona and Seville. Supplements of 1.20 euros in Huelva and 25% in Córdoba. In Malaga there is a charge of 2 Euros for night journeys, on both weekends and weekdays from 24.00 to 6.00 hours. The association sees no justification for this expensive service on weekends beyond applying the same rate as in the evenings on weekdays. FACUA warns that councils should ensure that a sufficient number of vehicles to increase demand in those days from the perspective that it is a public
25th October - 31st October 2013
service and not granting rate increases to the sector. FACUA also is opposed to the fact that users pay supplements for the routes with des-
tinations to places such as airports, train and bus stations, as there is a higher quality of service to justify it. FACUA studied journey prices of one, five,
ten and fifteen kilometers travelled by day, night and evenings on weekends (including VAT). After analyzing the twelve journeys, the study ranks cities by as-
signing scores. So Tarragona is the most expensive and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Arrecife (Lanzarote) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife the cheapest.

Sunbed row continues Los Cristianos has been without sunbeds and parasols for the whole of the summer season. It has been laid bare since July!
Spanish newspaper Diario de Avisos reported that local Arona Councillor, Candelaria Perez said that, if all goes well, by the end of the year, and by January, they expect the contract for sunbeds and parasols of Los Cristianos to be awarded. This means that once again the provision of this service needs to
go out to tender, which will happen in the coming weeks. The previous provider of the
beach services was suspended as it been operating for two years without an official contract.
Local traders say that the lack of sunbeds and umbrellas on the beach of Los Cristianos is
causing economic harm to them. Indeed many visitors have contacted Canar-
ian Weekly saying that they wished they’d not visited Los Cristianos, as they were appalled at the lack of services. An interim measure was suggested by local businesses, providing the facilities and donating the money to charity, but this seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Some say that the buck has been passed, that the provision of services is the responsibility not of the Town Hall, but, the Department of Tourism. Wherever the responsibility lies, a solution needs to be found as visitors are taking their beach towels elsewhere!
Spain clears recession barrier, but it’s still really tough going SPAIN’S financial crisis continues, but the country is out of recession at last - just!
The Bank of Spain’s estimated figures reveal that the country’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product) grew by 0.1% during the summer months. Yet it is still 1.2% below the figures recorded for the same period last year. Another minus is that the growth - the first in two years - happened during July, August and September, when Spain’s economy usually shows a dramatic change from the winter because of the traditional tourist influx.
Page 8
But the Bank of Spain insists this return to growth is the result of an improvement in the export market in the third quarter of 2013. And economists from the Arcano consultancy calls the country an “export powerhouse”. Arcano says private investment and consumer spending will increase next year after consistent falls since 2011, and levels of credit will stabilise. The company also predicts that Spain will be fully out of recession “some time in 2014”. As yet, however, the Bank of Spain’s calculations have to be confirmed as they are not official. The National Insti-
tute of Statistics (INE) will issue a report on GDP levels next Friday (31st Oct), covering its growth - or otherwise -
between 1st July and 30th September. Economy Minister Luis de Guindos’ claims that this is just the first
step towards better times. He maintains that Spain’s public finance, competitiveness and
credit levels are “completely different” from a year ago. But unemployment is still running at nearly 27% and poverty is also on the increase. Doctors across Spain warn that future health problems will be rife, particularly among badly-fed children as they grow into adulthood, and among those who cannot afford the drugs needed to keep them in a good condition, as a result of the cutbacks. Opposition leader Alfredo Pérez-Rubalcaba (PSOE) says “the worst is yet to come” and has reminded the PP government that 22% of the population are living in actual poverty. Bank data has revealed the following: *30 homes a day are repossessed in the Comunidad Valenciana alone *Jobless figures among the 30-and-under agegroup are nearly 60% *The number of longterm unemployed residents has increased nearly fivefold since 2008 And the international Red Cross has announced that it will have supplied 40 million kilos of food to Spain in aid by the end of 2013. And that’s just under one kilo per member of the population.

Please Walk for Life again TENERIFE’S annual fund-raising Walk for Life will be held on Sunday, 15th December.
More than 2.300 people took part last year, many wearing pink, and raised 16.000 euros for local cancer associations to help research towards finding a cure for those affected. Brigitte Gypen, who organises the event, said: “The best date to announce the 2013 Walk for Life is, of course, the International Breast Cancer week.”
And she invites everyone to make a note of the Walk for Life date already. This year, everyone is also requested to help choose the design of the 2013 Walk for Life T-shirts, so visit www. carreraporlavida.com or the Facebook page of Carrera por la Vida, and vote. Soon, you will also be able to vote via the webpage of the Adeje and Arona municipalities. Brigitte added: “Many people affected by cancer look forward to this event, full of optimism each year. But also, many who wish to
help in any way possible look forward to it, year after year.” Carrera por la vida is a social, solidarity event. The organisers, with their army of volunteers, will create the event with all its logistics, sponsors, political contacts, collaborators and press contacts etc. Walk for Life/Carrera por la Vida has been held annually since 2005. At the end of the walk each year, thanks to all those taking part, the total amount raised is handed to two cancer associations: Asociación Española contra el
Cáncer (AECC) and the Asociación de Mujeres afectadas por Cáncer de mama (Ámate). The hand-over is supervised by a Notary, who certifies the donations and ensures transparency at all times. The walk starts at 10.30am at the Magma Centre in Costa Adeje, next to the main bus station, and ends at the Plaza Centro Comercial Nueva Mar, in front of Playa Las Vistas. Once a year, if you can walk, you can support. And if you want more details, please contact Brigitte Gypen on 629 111 856

Forecasters warn the big blow will also cause transport chaos, and cut power supplies, in echoes of the Great Storm of 1987. The risk of a severe storm has been highlighted by the Met Office, which says it could see gusts of more than 80mph, especially on exposed coasts in the South. A storm is classed as a hurricane when it has sustained winds of
74mph or higher. Unsettled British weather is expected to continue into the weekend, with further spells of heavy rain and strong winds. The Met Office warns there is a risk of a “significant” storm developing on Sunday night and Monday morning. And, based on current predictions, it says some areas could see their strongest winds for several years. A strong jet stream and warm air close to the UK are contributing to the development and strength of the storm. Eddie Carroll, Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, said: “There is
still a chance this storm may take a more southerly track and miss the UK, bringing impacts elsewhere in northern Europe. “But people should be aware that there is a risk of severe weather and significant disruption.” Chris England, Sky News weather centre meteorologist, said: “There’s the potential for some exceptionally strong winds late Sunday through Monday morning, particularly over the southern half of the UK, with potentially damaging gusts of 80-90mph in exposed parts. “But we are really
talking about something that doesn’t exist yet, so the forecast of the track, the timing, and the intensity are still open to change.” He added: “It’s really a warning of potential at the moment, and something to keep an eye on.” Atlantic storms of this type normally develop much further to the west of the UK and are waning in strength by the time they reach Great Britain. This storm is more unusual, however, developing much closer to the UK and, potentially, moving across the country while still in its most powerful phase.
Lorry driver’s dreadful blow THOUSANDS of tins of baked beans were stolen from a lorry – and the driver slept through it in his cab! A total of 6,400 tins of Heinz baked beans with sausages were taken after thieves cut a large hole in the white Sca-
nia vehicle. The breakin happened while the truck was parked in a layby on the A441 at Cookhill, near Redditch in Worcestershire. An entire pallet and part of a second one were lifted from the lorry between 8.45pm on Mon-
day and 5.30am on Tuesday. A West Mercia Police spokesman said: “We are appealing for information, especially about anyone trying to sell large quantities of Heinz baked beans in suspicious circumstanc-
es.” The product code is 71517000, with an expiry date of 31st March 2015. Anyone with information should contact, the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111, for which a reward may be paid.
Depraved ex-policeman gets 18 years A RETIRED police sergeant, extradited from Australia and convicted of child sex abuse committed in the UK, has been jailed for 18 years. Most of the abuse committed by 78-year-old Jeffrey Lake occurred when he was a serving police officer in Accrington, Lancashire, and Liverpool in the 1960s and early 1970s. Lake was arrested at his home in Queensland, and sent to Britain before he could stand trial for historical offences. He emigrated in 2002 and had been living in Australia for seven years
before one of his two victims went to a Lancashire police in Lancashire and said Lake had sexually and physically abused her as a child. The woman was interviewed at length and, when the investigation widened, a man came forward and said he had also been abused by the defendant, a court was told. He was arrested earlier this year and brought to the UK, where he denied the allegations against him. Last week, though, a jury at Preston Crown Court unanimously found him guilty of 20
charges of historic abuse including rape, buggery, indecency with a child, indecent assault and child cruelty. Mr Justice King, sentencing him, said each offence was a “serious example” of sexual and physical abuse, committed in a sustained way. Each of the two complainants had been deprived of achieving their full potential in adulthood as a consequence, he added. The judge continued: “Each has suffered from deep depression over the years. Each has felt suicidal and attempted suicide.
“I have no doubt that the major cause of all their lifelong problems is the abuse each suffered at your hands.” He observed that Lake had shown “no contrition and “no remorse” for the “deep and long-lasting” effects he had caused. Detective Inspector Bobbi Holbrook said afterwards: “These were despicable offences committed against two young children, made all the more sinister by Lake’s insistence of innocence and his attempts to persuade the jury his victims had invented the abuse.

ABTA reveals online holiday booking habits PC is king for online holiday bookings; tablet bookings grow amongst over-65s.
Now we’ve got the Poppy Girls FIVE girls, between the ages of 10 and 17, are following in the footsteps of the singing Military Wives.
Their dads are in the armed forces, and they are now a group who will be performing for The Queen. The Poppy Girls, assembled after a nationwide talent hunt involving 1,000 youngsters, will sing the official 2013 Poppy Appeal single. The children, who have a parent serving in the UK or overseas, have recorded the Regina Spektor song The Call (No Need To Say Goodbye). They will sing it in front of The Queen at next month’s Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. The girls are: Megan Adams, 10, from Stirling, Florence Ransom, 10, from Petersfield, Alice Milburn, 13, from Portsmouth, Bethany
Page 14
Davy, 15, from Dartford, and Charlotte Mellor, 17, from Cambridge. Decca Records and the Royal British Legion worked together to recruit the group, who represent the Royal Navy, the Army and the RAF. With a projected TV audience of more than six million viewers, hopes are high that the girls will mark their recording debut with a huge chart hit. Charles Byrne, the Legion’s head of fundraising, said: “This is a hauntingly-beautiful track, sung by a group of girls who know what it means to have family members constantly placed in harm’s way. “We have a major theme in this year’s Poppy Appeal around families, so there is no more powerful way of reflecting that than through the voices of these exceptionally-talented young people.” The track will be released on Remembrance Sunday, 10th November.
Almost half of us (49%) booked a holiday abroad online last year according to the 2013 ABTA Consumer Trends Survey, showing a steady hold from the previous year when 48% booked a holiday abroad online. The PC/laptop was overwhelmingly our favourite booking device, used by 96% of those who booked at least one holiday abroad online and 97% who booked at least one UK holiday online. Mobiles and tablets were used by one in five (20%) of those who booked a holiday abroad online, a small decrease from 2012 when 24% of people said they booked using either a mobile or a tablet. Generally, mobiles remain marginally more popular than tablets with 11% using them to make a booking compared to 9% using tablets. Despite smartphone ownership becoming increasingly prevalent, and tablet usage on the increase, when it comes to purchasing holidays online, consumers across all age groups are still more likely to use a PC or laptop. The most notable growth in bookings made on tablets was amongst the older end of the market, where tablets are preferred to mobile.
This is particularly true of the 65+s, whose use of tablets to book a holiday online increased from less than 1% in 2012 to 7% in 2013, highlighting the importance for all travel companies to ensure they have the right technology in place to capitalise on this growing trend. Overall, the 16-24 age group is by far the most prodigious user of mobile devices, with almost half (46%) saying they had used a mobile or tablet to book a holiday abroad online in the past year. Over a quarter (29%) of this age group used a mobile while almost 1 in 5 (17%) used a tablet. Families with young children are also keen to book on
the go, with two in five (40%) using a mobile or tablet device to book a holiday abroad online. Victoria Bacon, Head of Communications ABTA said “We know that consumers use an increasingly diverse range of channels and devices to plan, research and book their holidays, including instore, telephone or web chat, and a range of digital platforms. The important lesson for travel businesses is that they need to understand their customers’ needs, and build an integrated sales and marketing strategy to ensure they meet these needs, whatever stage of the researching and booking process customers may be at. The research
shows the vast majority of holidaymakers still rely on the PC when booking online and the gap appears to have widened between the number of people owning mobile and tablet devices and those using them to actually purchase a holiday. This suggests that there is an opportunity here for travel businesses to exploit, particularly given the growth of e-commerce and mobile commerce in other industries. The findings also debunk the myth that older generations don’t engage with new technology: tablet devices, in particular, are proving to be increasingly popular among older age groups.”

The killer pet ‘treats’ in US A WARNING has been issued to pet owners in the US to be cautious about giving their dogs “jerky” treats. It follows the deaths of nearly 600 canines and 3,000 others becoming ill. American health officials say the cases, dating back to 2007, may be related to the dogs being given animal food sold as jerky tender, or strips made of chicken, duck, sweet potatoes and/or dried fruit. Most of the products implicated were made in China, and manufacturers of pet foods are not bound by US law to list the country of origin for the products’ individual ingredients. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an alert to consumers about the 3,600 illnesses, which included 580 deaths, allegedly linked to the treats. At least 10 cats have, reportedly, also been taken ill, but officials admit the exact cause of the illnesses has yet to be determined. Yet experts have conducted
more than 1,200 tests, visiting manufacturers in China and working with foreign governments to try to solve the mystery. Symptoms include decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, decreased activity, increased water consumption and increased urination. Severe cases have involved kidney failure and gastrointestinal bleeding, the FDA added. The agency has urged owners of pets showing such symptoms to contact a vet and save any remaining treats and packaging for possible testing. “This is one of the most elusive and mysterious outbreaks we’ve encountered,· said Bernadette Dunham, director of the FDA’s Centre for Veterinary Medicine. “Our beloved, fourlegged companions deserve our best effort and we are giving it. “Our fervent hope as animal lovers is that we will soon find the cause of - and put a stop to these illnesses.”
Royal mail is now over-subscribed Royal Mail announced that it has received a strong response to its campaign to recruit 21,000 seasonal workers to help sort its Christmas mailbag. The seasonal positions will support Royal Mail’s permanent 124,000 postmen and women who sort and deliver the mail all year round, including Christmas which is the busiest time of the year for the postal service. More than 80,000 people have so far applied for seasonal Christmas roles since the recruitment campaign was launched at the beginning of September, Royal Mail’s Managing Director of Operations and Modernisation, Mark Higson, said: “Christmas is the busiest time of the year for Royal Mail. We are delighted at the response from people keen to earn extra money over the festive season. “We continue to look forward receiving ap-
Page 16
plications from people who want to earn some extra money and help us sort the Christmas mailbag.” Of the seasonal roles available, around 18,000 are in England, 2,000 in Scotland, 700 in Wales and 400 in Northern Ireland. Around 4,000 of the seasonal positions are in ten temporary parcel sort centres being opened for the Christmas period. The recruits will help to sort Christmas cards and parcels before they go to around 1,400 delivery offices for postmen and women to take out on their rounds. Royal Mail is on track to have all the seasonal positions filled by the time the first shifts begin in early November. The peak of the additional temporary work will be in December. Royal Mail has set up a dedicated website for people to apply for the positions – www.royalmail.com/ xmasjobs.
Nation suffering from savings angst New Which? research reveals a nation worried about savings, with those about to retire more likely to be eating into their savings than any other age group.
The latest Which? Quarterly Consumer Report finds that half of people are worried about the level of their savings (49%) with one in five (20%) dipping into their savings to pay for essentials last month. This figure rises to a quarter (23%) of 50-64 year olds – the highest of all age groups – and this group was most likely to use it for food (49%) or a
household bill (48%). One in five (20%) UK households have no savings at all, leaving people vulnerable to financial shocks. Around four in ten (43%) say they would find it difficult to cope with an unexpected expense, but just 26% say they are saving for a rainy day or unexpected expense. Analysis of the Office for National Statistics’ Living Costs and Food Survey shows that the average household saves £5.20 per week, or £270.40 per year. But those on the lowest incomes are not saving anything at all, compared to those on the highest incomes saving on average £22 a week. The current very low interest rates are fur-
ther compounding this savings problem as there is little incentive for people to save. After the cost of living, savings interest rates are one of the top consumer worries with six in ten people worried (58%), and those about to retire especially anxious (62%). Which? executive director, Richard Lloyd, said: “Our research paints a worrying picture of consumers vulnerable to financial shocks and unable save for retirement, with the rising cost of living forcing them to dip into their savings to pay for essentials like food and bills. “We’re pleased the Financial Conduct Authority is looking into the savings market and
we want the regulator to take real action to help savers to get the best deal out of the savings market, rather than leaving billions of pounds languishing in accounts paying poor levels of interest.” Pre-retirement age people are also particularly worried about the level of their savings. Two thirds (64%) of those aged 50-64 are not confident they will have enough money to live comfortably in retirement and last month 16% reduced the amount of their savings – four times as many as those aged under 30 (4%). Only three in 10 (30%) increased their total amount of savings last month – the lowest proportion of all age groups.

food, water or electricity. Quite rightly, they shouted it from the rooftops and the water and electricity were re-instated. But their 500 dogs were coming to the end of the food supply. We were able to send 1,000 kilos as an emergency measure, and as a result of an appeal, we will be able to help further. Their situation is deplorable and we must do all we can to allow the dogs to live with dignity. We have already raised 727 euros in days, which includes the raffle proceeds from the Black Tie
event last weekend, so we can pay for the 1,000 kilos already sent. We are now “in front”, so we’ll will ask Yahaira from the refuge how best to donate the surplus cash. This will be an ongoing appeal until thwe situation is resolved, and they need your help. Jack The Ripper may be fading into memory now, but East London has found no peace; H Division’s beat is more chaotic and lawless than ever. So when a sergeant from Limehouse’s neighbouring K Division is found, hurled from a Whitechapel tenement window on to the iron railings below, Reid is quick to act. If the police are to be so publicly assaulted on his streets, what hope for law-abiding civilian life? Investigations into the man’s activities lead them to the newly emergent Chinatown of the Limehouse dockside; and from there into the orbit of K-Division’s Inspector Jedediah Shine. Shine’s conviction is that his sergeant has fallen victim to a Triad turf-war in this new market, but Jackson discovers evidence of a newly synthesised and devastatingly powerful opiate that leads Reid to different conclusions. And a dread fear that a new kind of hell is to be released on to his streets.
Nigellissima Friday 25th October, BBC2, 19:00 Nigella Lawson continues to share her passion for creating mouth-watering Italian food. Inspired by a scribbled note she once found in an old Italian kitchen, Nigella starts with her take on the classic light and sunny yoghurt pot cake. Nigella's niece and nephew are recruited to make a shortcut sausage meatball supper, while a girls' night in sees Nigella rustling up a super quick dish of squid and prawns with marjoram and chilli. The evening ends with Nigella's tiramisini - a lighter, quicker version of traditional tiramisu. In the second episode, she treats her supper guests to a sumptuous feast of lamb chops with mint, chilli and golden potatoes, served alongside roasted red onions with fennel and basil. Dessert is a true Anglo-Italian affair with a ruby red plum and amaretti crumble. There is also Nigella's easy no-stir farro risotto with mushrooms, and chocolate pasta with a dark butterscotch sauce - a perfect supper for those nights when you can't decide if you're in the mood for savoury or sweet.

W C choice Citizen Khan BBC1, 21:30
Sitcom following the trials and tribulations of self-appointed Muslim community leader Mr Khan and his long-suffering family. The imam at the mosque calls a special fast and Mr Khan uses it to compete with Dave, the mosque manager. He is suffering badly, and the old double whammy of low blood sugar and a dodgy bladder means he is a ticking time-bomb. Alia has a foreign exchange student staying, and Shazia has announced she has been offered a great job opportunity in India, which will mean more money and the chance to put down a deposit on a new flat. However, being away for twelve months will put her engagement to Amjad in jeopardy. Mrs Khan decides the only way to save their relationship is to pay the flat deposit for them, and she sends Mr Khan to the building society to secure the all-important loan. Khan arrives for his meeting with the building society manager starving hungry and gasping with thirst, not perhaps the perfect conditions to persuade him to give him a loan. Starring: Adil Ray, Shobu Kapoor, Matthew Cottle, Maya Sondhi, Bhavna Limbachia, Abdullah Afzal

The Secret Life of Beaches. This time the all-new series of Coast is exploring the glorious diversity and endless delights offered by our beaches. In Scotland, zoologist and exsoldier Andy Torbet braves one of the most dangerous beaches in Britain. Andy investigates how an RAF bombing range on the sands manages to double as a secret retreat for a colony of seals, who seem to thrive while basking within earshot of the bomb blasts. Off the coast of Newport, Nick does some detective work to find out how a criminal gang was uncovered after local detectives dug deep into the Welsh shore. On the sands of Aberlady Bay in Scotland new Coast presenter, military historian Nick Hewitt, unearths the steel skeletons of two top-secret midget submarines, part of the family of specialist craft which played a pivotal role in sinking The Tirpitz. Finally, Nick Crane digs deep to discover what it's like to live on Britain's most unusual beach, the eerily beautiful, vast shingle spit at Dungeness in Kent.

Architectural journalist and senior curator at the V&A, Kieran Long, and award-winning architect Piers Taylor are following self-builders as they take on the biggest gamble of their lives. All have less than ÂŁ100k to spend, little or no experience and life savings on the line. In this episode, couple Jane and Andy look to trade the conveniences of the modern home for a self-sufficient lifestyle after buying a plot on an eco-community in West Wales. These passionate environmentalists intend to build a house with locally sourced materials. Their new home must also help them meet the community's self-sufficiency quotas, allowing them to produce 75% of everything they consume from food to electricity.

Kevin meets a master craftsman whose dream is to build a castle made entirely of mud. Kevin McCabe is the leading living exponent of the ancient art of cob building - wrestling houses out of mud using his bare hands. Kevin has almost single-handedly kept alive this traditional way of building in rural Devon. But now he doesn't just want to build another cob house, he wants to build a cob castle. Not only that, Kevin also wants his gigantic new cob house to meet the highest environmental performance targets ever set. It is truly an almighty challenge.

A Very English Education BBC2, 21.00 The British public school is an institution renowned the world over. In 1979, the BBC made a documentary series about life inside one of our most privileged and traditional boys’ boarding schools, Radley College. In 2013 BBC director Hannah Berryman caught up with some of the boys who featured in the series to find out how their lives panned out after they left Radley. As boys, they had left home to board at prep school at around eight years old, then moved on to Radley to acquire ‘the right habits for life’, as the school head calls them. But did their lives turn out to be as successful as their parents had hoped, and what kind of men did they become? The film explores the pain and the pleasure of growing up, as well as the unique advantages and difficulties of a quintessentially English education.

In Chichester, West Sussex, Joe sees how a large former mental hospital is being transformed into family homes powered by a vast on-site eco energy plant. The start of a new eight-part series in which Robson Green travels the length and breadth of his home county of Northumberland to discover how this mystical place has played a unique role in shaping contemporary Britain. Over the next eight weeks, Robson will explore the rich history of a region that has been occupied by Romans, invaded by Vikings, played a key role in the founding of English Christianity and has been the setting for many bloody battles between the English and the Scots, and discovers why Northumberland has become known as 'Britain's best-kept secret'. In this opening episode, Robson spends 24 hours living with the wildlife rangers on the remote Farne Islands, one of Britain's greatest natural wonders. Here, he encounters thousands of angry Arctic terns and endures a sleepless night in a lighthouse. He also learns about the history of the port of Seahouses and meets the man who is the third generation in his family to run boat trips to the Farnes.

Our Dirty Nation. Cleaning up Britain's rubbish costs us more than a billion pounds a year. Hardly surprising, given we drop five times more litter today than we did in the Sixties - much of it as a direct result of our fondness for fast food, soft drinks and sweets. Yet while we seem unwilling to pick up after ourselves - or our pets - other people's discarded rubbish still gets many hot under the collar. In an authored report for Panorama, journalist, Labour peer and Sixties icon Joan Bakewell argues that we all need to take more pride in our surroundings and examines whether enough is really being done to clean up. She tours the country meeting those groups trying to turn back the tide of rubbish, confronting the litter louts and even takes up her luminous spray paint to go walkies with the dog mess patrol.

On the run ITV1, 21.00 “He knows he’s a man on the run and he clearly has no intention of doing anything about it. Nigel runs – where’s he going to run to? He needs to be brought back and serve his time.” - Maureen Burnell, wife of fugitive Nigel Burnell This new documentary features a manhunt attempting to track down a pair of wanted criminals so they can be brought to justice. Presenters Mark Williams-Thomas and Natasha Kaplinsky show how their undercover team trace fugitives who are running from the law and the programme includes high-octane scenes as the team closes in on the wanted men. One is a sex offender, the other a violent fugitive. They have gone to ground after jumping bail in one case and breaking their licence conditions in the other. Using undercover stings and subterfuge, this programme shows in vivid detail how these criminals are located by the team, before police are called in to arrest them. It also brings into sharp focus the difficulty in arresting a wanted British criminal in Portugal - even though he is the subject of an international arrest warrant. Wednesday 06:00 ............................ Breakfast 09:15 ....................... The Sheriffs are Coming
Coming soon - WPC 56 Hit daytime crime drama WPC 56 to return to BBC One for second series Set in Birmingham in the 1950s, WPC 56 stars Jennie Jacques as WPC Gina Dawson, the first woman police constable to serve in her West Midlands hometown in 1956. The hugely successfully first series gained an average audience of 1.7 million and 22 per cent share. The new series of 5x45-minute episodes started shooting in Birmingham for seven weeks on Sunday 20 October. Mike Hobson, Series Producer, says: “I am delighted to announce that the second series of WPC 56 started filming on Sunday in and around Birmingham. The city offers a rich source of period locations that we plan to revisit including the Jewellery Quarter and the wonderful Black Country Living Museum... the Midland’s own ‘Hollywood Back Lot’. I hope the good people of Birmingham will enjoy seeing their home on screen when the show airs in early 2014.” The show is made by BBC Birmingham Drama Village and builds on the successful period drama series Land Girls. It’s produced by the inhouse team who create 220 episodes of Doctors per year, and soon-to-bescreened second series of crime drama Father Brown. WPC 56 is produced by Carol Harding, the script producer is Grainne O’Boyle and the Series Producer is Mike Hobson. The Executive Producer is Will Trotter.
A look at the work of high court enforcement officers, also known as sheriffs, as they strive to retrieve cash for members of the public that are owed money. A builder asked an 86-year-old pensioner to fork out £4,000 for some work on her roof, and he left it in a worse state than when he started. The sheriffs pay the builder an early morning visit to try to get her money back - but things get rather heated. The sheriffs try to track down a landlord who did not pay his student tenants their deposits when they left. But he proves hard to find. And an office manager was unfairly dismissed. She was awarded compensation, but her ex-bosses did not pay up. Can the sheriffs help?

Getting permission to extend in a conservation area can prove extremely problematic. Roland Cain has bought a flat but cannot get the planning permission he desperately wants to open up his attic. He plans to spend £40,000 to create an extra bedroom so his son can visit from university, but getting permission for an extended dormer window is proving a headache. Meanwhile, the O'Reillys live in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Their home has fantastic views over the High Weald in Hastings, but they need planning permission to extend one corner of the house and incorporate an outside bedroom.

Matt Allwright looks into the work of fraud investigators determined to catch those who steal from the public purse. And he meets the genuine claimants who deserve government help. Fraud investigators in Reigate are looking into the case of a self-proclaimed mystic who has potentially spirited away £75,000 in benefits he was not entitled to. As the team dig deeper they discover a lifestyle that does not marry up to what they had on his benefit claim forms. Matt meets Simon, a man whose life fell apart after the breakdown of his marriage. Suffering from depression, Simon spent weeks living in his car before finally being offered a glimmer of hope by a local homeless charity. But would their support be enough to bring him back from the brink?
Bedlam Channel 4, 21.00 A brand new four-part series, Bedlam boldly challenges the myths and taboos about mental illness through unprecedented access to the patients and staff of the South London and Maudsley (SLaM) - the world’s oldest psychiatric institution. It’s a condition every one of us experiences from time to time, but imagine if one day you woke up and found your anxiety had spiralled completely out of control. Anxiety has become the mental illness of our time - the NHS issues around 7 million anti-anxiety drug prescriptions every year - but while most of us are able to live with it, for some it’s completely debilitating. At the Bethlem Royal Hospital in south London, a specialist anxiety unit treats some of the most extreme cases in Britain - the top 1 per cent. It’s a residential unit, one of only two in the country. Most suffer with extreme OCD and despite the myths, these are not people who obsess about their houses being untidy. They have a serious mental illness rendering them unable to function, hold down jobs or maintain relationships. 23-year-old James has an unusual anxiety - a profound fear that he’ll lose control of his bowel movements in public. Consequently he spends up to seven hours a day in the loo, too scared to leave in case he has an accident. He’s been in and out of psychiatric institutions since he was a teenager and last year had to drop out of university because his OCD got so bad. His mum, Penny, talks about how she’s lost the little boy she once knew and how she’s desperate for him to live a normal life again. Helen is a librarian at the British Museum. She has an irrational fear of harming strangers – she believes that somehow she’s responsible for killing them in road traffic accidents or putting them in rubbish bins. For the last two years she’s lived the life of a recluse, too worried to leave the house or go to work. As a result her long-term relationship has broken down. The rituals and behaviours of people like James and Helen can often seem odd or bizarre but they are driven by a less well known aspect of OCD called intrusive thoughts. Head of Anxiety Disorders Residential Unit (ADRU) Simon Darnley explains that we all have unwanted involuntary, fleeting thoughts and we are able to dismiss them. His patients, however, become extremely worried and obsess about them. The more they try to ignore the thought, the stronger it becomes. The key to getting better lies in confronting the thoughts head on in practical exercises. Darnley also highlights how the specific anxieties and worries are a product of our time. In the ‘80s he saw people who were convinced they’d somehow “caught” HIV. More recently the unit has begun to see people who have an irrational fear that they are paedophiles which he believes is a direct result of the media witch hunt around paedophilia. The unit runs a 12-week therapy programme with a success rate of 3 in 4. According to Darnley we are all on the scale and any one of us has the potential to become paralysed by our anxiety but he also maintains people can be cured.

MY TOUR OF DUTY! LAST Tuesday was a rare night off for me, so I decided to visit as many areas as possible.
My mini tour didn’t quite reach as far as I would have liked, but it was good to catch up with a few people and, of course, get to see a few acts. The evening began at The Brewers Droop on the Patch, where compere Andy P had a full terrace of happy people and a party atmosphere. The cabaret for the evening was none other than Michael J Grant and his Souled Out Show. Just up the stairs from the Brewers, you will find Bad Bobs, a traditional little sports boozer. And on Tuesday evenings, owner Dean offers up a bumper quiz. It’s for hard-core eggheads only but, judging by the lack of empty seats, there were plenty of big brains testing their grey matter. Most entertainment in venues begins between 9-9.30pm, with comperes taking to the stage first and then the featured cabaret artistes presented at 11pm, although some venues prefer the 10pm slot for their shows.
An example of this would be The Pheasant Plucker, in San Eugenio, where Craig Shaw begins the night at 8.30pm. This format has always been successful for them, and, as I passed in the car at about 10pm, there wasn’t a free seat in the house as the legendary Kevin Isaacs, with his popular Comedy Elvis Show, was about to be introduced. It wasn’t long before the wheels were rolling again as I headed towards Los Cristianos, arriving at the El Mirador strip of bars. There is ample parking and I was able to park right in front of Mikeys Bar, home of award-winning compere Mikey Lee. It’s easy to see why it is such a busy bar. The first person you meet is Tony, their PR, and Mikeys should be proud to have such a good guy out-front representing them. I watched Tony for a while, and his manner
with the passing trade was second to none. He sells the bar and its entertainment so well, and if Carlsberg made PRs..! Mikey Lee, fresh from a week back in the UK, was on stage, entertaining a full bar and terrace. He is a natural, and it’s obvious when you watch him working why he is so popular with the audience. The whole strip seemed to be buzzing, with Springers Bar full and Bojangles bar heaving as customers awaited award-winning comedian Billy Porter. He is another of the most-popular acts around, and has a huge following. I was back on the road after 45 minutes, but only around the corner to Parque Margarita and Restaurante Margarita. Again, I was lucky enough to get parked right outside and bumped into Pip Brown, yet another award-winner who had just finished his Michael Buble tribute show and
was dashing off to his next venue, Dreamers Bar, for an 11pm spot, with minutes to spare. Ged Bolton (Rod Stewart) was into his first song when I arrived and I could only just see him behind all of the dancers. It was so good to see four bars so busy, and all featuring such a vibrant atmosphere. This area is brilliant if you are travelling from out of Los Cristianos, with a designated driver, as there is plenty of parking available and enough variety to keep you occupied all night. Next stop was The Moonlight Bar because I know from personal experience that their featured artistes are presented around 11.30pm. I arrived at the same time as Tempo 2000, who were raring to go. These guys have so much enthusiasm for their job, and neither of the boys, Corey or Stu, consider what they do as work. Altogether, it was a good night and although I didn’t get to see a full show, I did see lots of comperes, barowners and acts. But what made my night was PR Tony at Mikeys. If every bar had someone like him, there would be nobody walking the streets - they’d all be in the bars!

SUZIE MOORE is re-locating to Tenerife early next month and is no stranger to these shores. This young lady worked a summer here while on a break from university, where she was studying for a degree in musical theatre. She achieved that with honours, and recently qualified to teach performing arts as well. Suzie, from Hull, is a bubbly character on stage with so much more than just a beautiful voice. She will be a welcome addition to what is already a strong circuit. Suzie will, no doubt, follow the success of other female singers like Lisa Bridge, who arrived earlier this year and is doing very well. Any interest in Suzi Moore for bookings should be directed to suziemoore@live.co.uk She arrives on 5th November and will be available to work from the following day.
DJ Zefive had his birthday party in Tramps on Saturday and saw a plethora of the Island’s DJ talent performing a set. And if they weren’t performing, they were there. It was like a Who´s Who of the Tenerife DJ scene, with resident DJs Snoopy, Woody and Si Palmer working for the night alongside Ben Simington, Leon Cormack, Tan FX, Mikee Holmes, King Rober and many more. Some amazing sounds were produced that night, which was another triumph for Olly and his team at Tramps. The next biggy is the Halloween Party, and this year’s theme is “Sexy”. Olly pulls out all the stops for Halloween - always - and refuses to be beaten when it comes to dressing the bar in the appropriate style. In fact, I believe Olly and the workforce at Tramps actually enjoy Halloween more than Xmas and New Year. Everyone likes to dress up, and this year is going to be immense. See you all in Tramps on Thursday (31st Oct) for the sexiest, spookiest party of the year.

MAKE SURE YOUR SOFA IS SPOT-ON!
By Sue McDonald YOU can now build your own sofas. Well, not with your own hands, obviously, but I know a man who can! You can make all the style choices in order to make sure the sofa is exactly what you want. For example, we had clients this week who wanted two three-seater sofas for their large living room. They both like to watch the TV lying down, I suppose. That doesn’t sound too difficult, but most shops sell sofas in sets - a three-seater and a two-seater - and won’t sell them separately. Also, a lot of the furniture they had seen locally was not of the quality they wanted. Although we don’t have the shop now, we do have a small display area in our storage deposit, so the clients came there. We have a sofa from our main manufacturer here in Tenerife on display, with removable arms, so that you can try several styles. This demonstrates the standard of the work, and the comfort of the sofa itself. We also have a sofa bed on display so that people can see how the mechanism works, and also try the mattress.
Page 38
Now, a sofa is a sofa, right? Wrong! There’s a lot to take into account. For example, the first thing I ask people is: “how do you sit on the sofa?” A pretty weird question you might think. But I like to sit with my legs tucked up, and leaning on the arm of the sofa to read. So my preference is for a padded, square-arm of a comfortable height for that all-important leaning. Other people like to lie down on the sofa, so they might choose arms that are padded and slightly inclined, a bit like a pillow. Then there’s the back to think about. A lot of modern sofas have very low backs, but, generally, English people like high-back sofas so they can lean their head back. As far as the seats are concerned, you can also choose the density of the foam, to make them slightly harder or softer to your liking. And, say, in a three seater, you can have three base and back cushions or just two. This doesn’t affect the size of the sofa, but the look of it only. Exhausted? And we haven’t even talked about the material and the colour yet, which can be chosen from our
huge display. The clients this week were able to make all of the above style choices. But on further discussion, we found out that the gentleman liked his current sofa because it was the only one he could really stretch out on. So his new sofa will be a bit longer than standard as well, fitting him and their lounge perfectly. Who knew it could be so complicated? However, it didn’t take us long to make all the decisions, and the clients will end up with a tailormade sofa for them and their property. And for all these minor changes to the catalogue styles, there is no extra charge. After all, whether you work and spend your precious free time chilling on the sofa, or if you don’t work, and you spend lots of time relaxing and watching daytime TV, you want to be comfortable. Equally, if you are going to spend your hardearned cash on something, it should be exactly what you want. We still have plenty of time for both re-upholstery and making new furniture for Christmas, as they take 10-14 days only to make. But I think people may be planning ahead this year as we are already rather busy. So if you are thinking of buying a new sofa or sofa bed, give us a call and come and have a go at building your own sofa!
Online shopping & dodgy deliveries A new Which? survey of more than 14,000 Which? members has placed Liz Earle top of the online shops for a fourth year running, with customers praising its personal touches, speedy delivery and free gifts. B&Q came bottom, down from second to last in 2012, criticised for having a hard to navigate website with one consumer describing it as a “truly terrible experience”. New entrants included Wex Photographic and
Toolstation, which went straight in to the top ten, earning praise for their knowledgeable staff and good delivery policies. Amazon slipped from third to joint 11th. But delivery problems can tarnish even the best online shopping experience, with a third of all online shopping issues concerning receipt of the goods. Couriers came bottom of the pile when comparing customer satisfaction with different delivery methods. City Link fared worse with a
customer score of 56%, regular post was the favoured way of receiving online shopping, according to the survey. Top delivery problems included items turning up damaged (9%), which was the main gripe, followed by deliveries not turning up (8%), inability to choose a delivery slot (7%) and delivery outside the agreed time (6%). Consumers can find out their rights on dodgy deliveries using the consumer rights website here: http:// www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/ search/? q=online+shopping Which? executive director Richard Lloyd, said: “Online shopping has never been more popular with cash-strapped consumers looking for good value and customer service, but the industry falls down when it comes to the performance of its delivery partners. Which? has free, online stepby-step advice guides to help shoppers claim back what they’re owed if a parcel fails to turn up.”

Raymond says grow your own
World -re nowned chef Raymond Blanc is calling on communities to grow their own fresh produce as a healthier, safer option that could help ease hardship for families in deprived urban communities who have difficult choices to make when buying food.
Raymond helped launch ‘Edible Britain’ in April, the theme of RHS Britain in Bloom 2013, in which 1,000 mini allotments were set up in public spaces across the UK including inner-city London, Manchester, Glasgow and Newcastle and are now being harvested and enjoyed by communities. The RHS drive to get communities to grow their own was championed at the prestigious annual RHS Britain in Bloom UK Finals Award ceremony when Bath received the ‘Edible Britain’ award for embracing the campaign across the city and many finalists were recognised for their ef• Now that colder weather is approaching, protect half-hardy plants. • Lift Dahlias tubers, Begonias tubers and Gladiolus corms to store dry over the winter months. Remove the dead foliage before storing them. • Plant daffodil bulbs, tulip bulbs and Allium bulbs for a glorious spring display. Dot them through borders. • Plant bareroot ornamental trees and shrubs. • Plant out any perennials or biennials you’ve grown from seed this year. • Plant spring bedding such as wallflowers,
forts, like Woolton (Liverpool) who impressed judges with their allotments and won the Urban Community category and Lytham (Lancashire) who won RHS Champion of Champions 2013. Raymond, who in the summer joined Watlington in Bloom, an RHS Britain in Bloom 2013 finalist, said: “Many children in Britain are going to school hungry because their families can’t afford
to buy supermarket food. This is happening when there are public spaces that aren’t being used in cities and towns around Britain. “There are great examples by RHS Britain in Bloom groups like 2013 finalist The Meadows in Nottingham – residents took charge of a fly-tipping site and turned it into an organic farm which serves 7,000 local people in the area. They are growing delicious
fresh fruit and vegetables with no chemicals or energy being wasted on transportation, people are eating healthily and children are learning about the origins of their food.” Guy Barter, RHS Chief Horticultural Advisor, said: “Eating home-grown fruit and vegetables is important for two key reasons. Firstly, we waste an unbelievable amount. The latest figures suggest around 15 million

Get to the root of it By Carl from Robot
IF being superblonde is your colour, or the shade of your dreams, then keeping it that way can be a bit of a drag for some.
First of all, there’s the upkeep. If you’re a regular reader of this column, you will know that my biggest no-no is ROOTS! So if you can’t be bothered to retouch that brown line, or it’s too much of a financial strain, then please don’t even attempt to be blonde. There s nothing, I repeat nothing, worse than seeing roots more than half-an-inch long. Even if you are cutting your hair regularly but not getting rid of those tell-tale roots, it can look so bad. And don’t think tying your hair back will disguise it - get them done or tone it down. If you are blonde and want to stay that way, be careful to use the correct products. Anything you use must be white in colour, or at least cream. Do not be tempted to use shampoos or conditioners which are orangy or yellowy because these will tarnish your hair and dull the colour. Instead, if your hair is prone to brassiness, use a violet shampoo to combat this. Don’t be fooled into using sham-
Page 40
poos that say they will brighten your colour. A shampoo is just that! It cannot lighten your hair, no matter what it says on the bottle. If your hair is lightened, or even naturally light, you must protect it from the harsh sun we have in Tenerife. Always replenish your blonde locks with Argan oil - your hair will soak this up. And try not to
overdo the colour, either. You should be retouching the roots every 5-8 weeks, depending on the growth speed. If you’re having hi-lites done, try not to have a full head every time. Top and sides is enough for the second time, while overdoing it will just cause breakage and make the regrowth worse. If you have a complete colour, the roots should be done at least every 5-6 six weeks because leaving it longer just looks bad. Above all, your shade of blonde should complement your skin and eye tone. Don’t go too far away from your natural shade as this can look harsh and false. As a friend of mine said when she once went from blonde to dark brown: “I don’t feel special any more.” It’s true - blondes do have more fun!
we really are brain-washed! THE brain uses sleep to “wash away” the waste toxins built up during a hard day’s thinking.
At least, that’s the findings of a research team in America, who believe that the “waste removal system” is one of the fundamental reasons for sleep. Their study, in the journal Science, shows that brain cells shrink during sleep to open up the gaps between neurons and allow fluid to wash the brain clean. They also suggest that failing to clear away some toxic proteins may play a role in brain disorders. The big unanswered question for sleep researchers is: “Why do animals sleep at all when it leaves them vulnerable to predators?” It has been shown to have a big role in the fixing of memories in the brain and learning, but researchers at the University of Rochester Medical Centre believe that “housework” may be one of the primary reasons for sleep. “The brain has only limited energy at its disposal and it appears that it must choose between two different functional states - awake and aware, or asleep and cleaning up, said researcher Dr Maiken Nedergaard. “You can think of it as
like having a house party. You can either entertain the guests or clean up the house - but you can’t really do both at the same time.” Their findings build on last year’s discovery of the brain’s own network of plumbing pipes known as the glymphatic system - which carry waste material out of the brain. The scientists, who imaged the brains of mice, showed that the glymphatic system became 10-times more active when the mice were asleep. Cells in the brain, probably the glial cells which keep nerve cells alive, shrink during sleep. This increases the gaps between brain tissue, allowing more fluid to be pumped in and wash the toxins away. Dr Nedergaard said this was a “vital” function for staying alive, but it did not appear to be possible while the mind was awake. She told the BBC: “This is purely speculation, but it looks like the brain is losing a lot of energy when pumping water across the brain - and that is probably incompatible with processing information.” She added that the true significance of the findings would be known only after human studies, but performing similar experiments in an MRI machine would be relatively easy.
Dr Neil Stanley, an independent sleep expert, said: “This is a very interesting study which shows that sleep is essential downtime to do some ‘housekeeping’ to flush out neurotoxins. “There is good data on memory, and learning the psychological reason for sleep. But this is the actual physical and chemical reason for sleep; something is happening which is important.” And Dr Raphaelle Winsky-Sommerer, a Surrey University lecturer in sleep, said: “It’s not surprising because our whole physiology is changing during sleep.” Many conditions which lead to the loss of brain cells, such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s disease, are characterised by the build-up of damaged proteins in the brain. The researchers suggest that problems with the brain’s cleaning mechanism may contribute to such diseases, but they caution thet more research is needed. The Alzheimer’s Research UK charity agreed that more research would be needed to see whether damage to the brain’s waste clearance system could lead to diseases like dementia. But it added that the findings offered a “potential new avenue for investigation”.

genuine cure for baldness in sight
By Val Sainsbury ENGLAND striker Wayne Rooney sports a decent head of hair after his nine-hour, Harley Street Clinic transplant this summer.
The surgery was a topup treatment following the 27-year-old’s initial transplant in 2011. But he may have wished he’d waited a while longer, however, because he would almost certainly have saved himself a fortune. Not that he couldn’t afford expensive treatments and transplants on his £1m-a-month salary. But, in case anything should go wrong in the future, he will be delighted to know a genuine
cure for baldness is on the way. That’s because scientists have developed a pioneering technique which actually grows new hair. Using a person’s own cells to regenerate follicles, it offers hope to 7.4 million Britons who would love to restore their hair. Researchers say it could also help women, as well as burns victims. Experts at the University of Durham and New York’s Columbia University Medical Centre say clinical trials could begin “in the near future”. The team have demonstrated that it is possible to regenerate follicles that could sprout new hair. They grow from clusters of cells called dermal papillae which trigger new growth. The gradual death of these cells causes baldness. The scientists harvest-
ed the cells from seven human donors, cloned them in a laboratory, and transplanted them into human skin grafted on to mice. In five cases, the transplants resulted in new hair growth which lasted at least six weeks. And DNA analysis confirmed that the new follicles were a genetic match to the donors. Professor Angela Christiano, from Columbia University Medical Centre, said: “Current hair-loss medications tend to slow the loss of hair follicles, or potentially stimulate the growth of existing hairs. But they do not create new hair follicles. “Neither do conventional hair transplants, which relocate a set number of hairs from the back of the scalp to the front. “Our method has the potential to grow new follicles using a patient’s own cells.
“This could greatly expand hair-restoration surgery to women and to younger patients. “Now, it is largely restricted to the treatment
of male-pattern baldness in patients with stable disease.” The research develops earlier work by Professor Colin Jahoda at the Uni-
versity of Durham, who co-led the new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences journal

hard on health?
LIVING near a UK airport - and Heathrow in particular - could increase the risk of fatal strokes and heart attacks because of noise from planes. Researchers compared data on day and nighttime aircraft noise with hospital admissions and mortality rates among a population of 3.6 million in the west London area. They found the risks were around 10-20% higher in areas with highest levels of aircraft noise, compared with the areas experiencing least noise. Dr Anna Hansell, lead author of the study, from the School of Public Health at London’s Imperial College, said: “These findings suggest a possible link between high levels of aircraft noise and risk of heart disease and stroke. “The exact role that noise exposure may play in ill-health is not wellestablished. However, it is plausible that it might be contributing, for ex-
ample, by raising blood pressure or by disturbing people’s sleep.” She added: “The relative importance of daytime and night-time noise also needs to be investigated further.” Previous research has found links between living in a noisy environment and the risk of high blood pressure, but few studies have looked at stroke, heart disease and circulatory disease. The new findings, carried out by researchers from Imperial College London and King’s College London and published in the British Medical Journal, raise the possibility that aircraft noise may be a contributing factor to these conditions. Professor Paul Elliott, senior author of the study and director of the UK Small Area Health Statistics Unit, Public Health England and the Medical Research Council - where the study was conducted - added: “From this type of study, we
can’t say for certain that aircraft noise is responsible for the increased heart disease and stroke risk in these communities, as there are other possible explanations.” He added: “It’s worth bearing in mind that there are many other factors known to have important influences on an individual’s risk of heart disease and stroke, like diet, smoking, lack of exercise and medical conditions, such as raised blood pressure and diabetes. “However, our study does raise important questions about the potential role of noise on cardiovascular health, which needs further study.” The researchers also considered other factors in those areas that have been linked to heart disease rates, such as social deprivation, ethnic composition, road traffic noise, air pollution and lung cancer rates - a proxy for the prevalence of smoking.
Smoker? Take a week off! EMPLOYEES who nip out of the office for fag breaks actually work a whole week less than their non-smoking colleagues each year. Everyday smokers spend an average of 45 minutes away from their work, which adds up to nearly four hours per week. Over a year, this amounts to smokers working seven fewer days than their colleagues who do not smoke, according to a study for Voucher Codes Pro. Under 20% of those
surveyed believed that smoking made them less hard-working employees than their nonsmoking peers. And 46% felt that having the occasional puff actually improved their work performance because, they said, it relieved stress and was a chance to chat to colleagues. One smoker said: ‘The smoking area at work is one of the most sociable places in the office to get to know co-workers well.’ Another said: ‘If I didn’t smoke I would be

a lot more stressed and wouldn’t be able to get half the things done in a day that I currently do.’ George Charles, marketing director of Voucher Codes Pro, said employers might think twice about hiring smokers due to the
amount of time they spend not working. ‘The subject of employing smokers is an undoubtedly controversial one, but clearly one that needs to be highlighted looking at the results of our study,’ he said.

Tesco’s fearful food dumping! TESCO has revealed astonishing details of the thousands of tons of waste food it dumps every month.
And the leading supermarket chain also calculates that families each squander food worth £700 a year - which accounts for even more waste than Tesco. The supermarket’s first-ever “waste” figures show that in the first six months of 2013, it ditched 28,500 tons via its stores and distribution centres. Some 68% of bagged salads is thrown out, as is nearly 50% of bakery items. Around 40% of apples are thrown away, 25% of grapes are wasted, and a 20% of all bananas are
Page 42
unused - with customers throwing 10% in the bin. As a result, Tesco is to end multi-buys on large bags of salad, and it is
developing mix-andmatch promotions for smaller bags to try to help customers reduce the amount they are wasting.
It is also removing “display until” dates from fresh fruit and vegetables, using smaller cases in stores, and rearranging 600 in-store
bakeries to reduce the amount of bread on display to improve better stock control and less waste. Tesco tracked 25 best-
selling products and combined information with data from the Waste and Resources Action Programme (Wrap) to give an overall food waste “footprint” for each item. Wrap’s last published figures, in 2011, estimated that 15 million tons of food waste was generated in the UK annually. Matt Simister, Tesco’s commercial director of group food, said: “We’ve all got a responsibility to tackle food waste, and there is no single, quick-fix solution. “Little changes can make a big difference, like storing fruit and vegetables in the right way. “Families are wasting an estimated £700 a year and we want to help them keep that money in their pockets, rather than throwing it in the bin. “We’re playing our part, too, and making changes to our processes and in-store.” Mr Simister added: “We’re working with our suppliers to try to cut waste at all stages of the journey, from farm to fork.” Wrap director Richard Swannell welcomed Tesco’s approach and added: “It is a global issue, and collaborative action is essential if we are to reduce food waste successfully and reap the financial and environmental benefits of doing so.”

Aussie clampdown on skilled Britons IT’S hard enough for skilled Brits to find work in the UK, even after years of searching.
Now, new Australian laws have made things tougher for those wanting to work Down Under. The Australian government has clamped down on the popular 457 visa, which allows foreign workers to move to the country for up to four years. The visa is particularly popular with British managers, professionals, technicians and trades people who want to start a fresh life for their families in Australia. Almost half of those on the visa eventually end up settling in Australia permanently. But recent restrictions have meant even those already living in Australia on the 457 visa are finding life harder. A tax incentive called the Living Away From Home Allowance has been scrapped, and some states charge visa-holders to put their children through schools, which are free for locals. Adam Marshall and his
family moved to Sydney on the visa three years ago. He told Sky News: “It’s not been a great financial move for us. “If I’d known how much it was going to cost in real terms, I’m not sure whether we would have made the move. It’s hard to say, in retrospect, because we love living here.” Australia’s previous Labour Government brought in the changes, claiming the visa was being abused by some employers looking for cheaper foreign workers. New legislation now
requires companies to spend longer looking for Australians to fill vacancies, and application fees for the visa have increased dramatically. A hard-hitting TV campaign was launched recently by Australia’s Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), featuring workers the union claims have had their livelihoods threatened by abuse of the 457 visa system. Union national secretary Dave Noonan said: “We’ve had lots of workers who are Australian citizens or residents
who tell us they have been applying for work. “They are skilled people and they haven’t been able to get work, and they know this same employer is bringing in people on 457s.” However, many employers disagree, and they hope the new Conservative Government Down Under, led by Prime Minister Tony Abbott, will relax the legislation. Computing and IT are areas which have, traditionally, sourced highlyskilled employees from abroad using the 457 visa.
Peter Acheson, who runs Australia’s biggest IT recruitment company, Peoplebank, told Sky News the crackdown on the 457 visa was stifling business. “I think it’s ironic,” he said. “There is all the talk about the digital economy and the future of the online world, which is IT driven. “On the other hand, though, we are saying we are going to make it difficult for Australia to source IT people. “I think that’s highly ironic and, ultimately, I believe Australia is going to be the loser out of
this unless the legislation is changed.” A recent survey by Migration Council Australia questioned 3,800 visa-holders and 1,600 companies. The report revealed that 457 workers have a high level of job satisfaction, demonstrating that they are integrating well into the Australian workforce. Carla Wilshire, Migration Council Australia chief executive, said the findings showed the 457 visa programme was critical in keeping Australia competitive in an era during which industry is global, and where 98% of innovation happens outside of Australia. She added: “Four out of five multi-national companies are using 457 visa holders to train and develop Australian workers. “The survey results reinforce the message that skills transfer and knowledge from 457 visa-holders play an important role in building Australia’s human capital. “Temporary migration does not just fill skills shortages; it addresses skills deficits and plays a central part in workplace development at the enterprise level.”

By Jav THE third-generation SEAT Leon, a classy new addition to the range, has been completely redesigned from the chassis up.
It is chock-full of advanced SEAT technology, usually found in a full-size class vehicle, and includes a cuttingedge chassis, advanced infotainment systems and maintenance-free, Full LED headlights, the New SEAT Leon 5DR defies all stereotypes. The ST estate joins the Leon hatchback and SC line-up for first time, bringing practicality, sharp handling and style. This is the first time an estate version of the Leon has been offered by the Spanish company, and SEAT have done a superb job of keeping the hatchback’s style intact. It drives almost as well, too, despite weighing 45kg more than the five-door. and there is a choice of petrol and diesel engines, which range on the petrol front from the 1.2 TSI 105 PS, through the 1.4 TSI 140 PS and on to the most powerful 1.8 TSI 180 PS.
The diesel prefers two versions of the 1.6 TDI – a standard 105 PS variant, and the 110 PS Ecomotive. Following those are the 2.0 TDI units, with either 150 PS or 184 PS. A range of transmissions are available, from five-or six-speed manual gearboxes to a six-or seven-speed DSG automatic. Maximum boot space of 1,470 is a few litres down on both the Skoda Octavia Estate and VW Golf Estate, but it’s still near the top of
the class. Best offering in the range, though, is surely the 1.2 TSI model - and the fivedoor hatch (Auto Express 2013 Car of the Year) and three-door SC Coupe both make an immediate impact with their crisp creases and smart proportions, and the ST doesn’t let the team down. From the outside, it’s a feast of crisp lines, from the grille, headlights and wing mirrors to the blade-sharp creases that run along the flanks of the car.
And it is certainly more interesting to look at than any of its rivals. despite being identical to the rest of the Leon range on the inside, from the rear seats forward. Light but precise steering, a slick manual gearbox, an excellent driving position and great visibility means the ST is simple and relaxing to drive (and park) around town. The 108bhp 1.6 TDI Ecomotive model returns an incredible 80mpg, but lacks re-
finement as the revs rise, while the punchy 104bhp 1.2 TSI is much smoother and cheaper to buy in the first place. Moving up the range there are 1.4 TSI, 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TDI engines – all available in sporty FR trim, but the smaller units will make more sense in the long run. The SEAT Leon ST went on sale at the start of the month, with the first cars available in January. Prices start at £16,675 for the ‘S’ 105PS 1.2
TSI and rise to £23,380 for the top of the range ‘FR’184PS 2.0 TDI model. The estate is £825 more than the equivalent five-door hatchback model. In terms of safety, the Leon has a full five-star rating from Euro NCAP, thanks to its long-list of standard safety kit and excellent crash absorption through the extensive use of highstrength steels in the MQB platform. And whatever your choice, you will not regret it.
Alpha Romeo’s new 4C off to a flyer IT’S not often that I get to mention Germany’s famed Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in these columns.
But twice in successive weeks? Well, last week, during a story on Radical Sportscars, I could hardly ignore the company’s fastest lap of all there by a street-legal car a mindblowing 6mins 48secs by their SR8 LM model in 2009. And Alpha Romeo’s brand-new 4C made the record books last week for production cars with less than 247bhp, com-
pleting the circuit in 8mins 4secs. And that is a record for those street-legal machines with less than 247bhp, beating the Porsche Cayman S which, though having put up the same time in 2009, has not had the citation ratified. The Alpha’s 4C has a top speed of 160mph and can reach 0-62mph in 4.5secs. It is powered by a 237bhp 1750 turbocharged petrol engine, producing 258lb ft of torque and fitted with Alfa’s twin-clutch gearbox. The car was shod with specially developed Pirelli Zero Trofeo tyres,
25th October - 31st October 2013
which will be available on customer cars in either 17in/18in or 18in/19in sizes Prices for the 4C start at £45,000, with up to 3500 units expected to be produced annually. Only 1,000 per year will be marked for Europe, however, with around 200 examples going to the UK. All 500 examples of the Launch Edition of the 4C - which gets additional carbon-fibre trim, a rear aluminium diffuser and different alloy wheels than the standard car - have sold out already. Keeper gamble reeps rewards
Ponferradina 0 CD Tenerife 1 MAYBE, just maybe, the tide is turning. After a few winless weeks and some sheer bad luck, last weekend brought the first glimmer of fortune.
This was an excellent win, and Tenerife battled hard. And to quote my old pal Kammy, they “defended like beavers” to get the result”. Ponferradina had more of the play, the better chances and hit the woodwork, yet they came away with nothing as Tenerife took their best chance. Also, Tenerife had what looked a perfectly good goal ruled out for offside before Ayoze’s latest goal. He is the new wonderkid and, thankfully, this week signed a new contract. But this match belonged to two others: manager Alvaro Cervera and director of football Quique Medina. Cervera deserves the plaudits for his bravery. As I suggested here last week, and wrote about in some length a month ago, club captain Sergio Aragoneses was dropped. Not just from the starting line-up, Classification
Page 52
but from the travelling party. Apart from being skipper, he is also the only senior keeper on the books. He has been first choice for four years and the fans love him. But he is getting on, and his decline has been evident all season. That said, it was a massive decision for Cervera to make. If Tenerife had been battered or even gone down to a simple defeat, he would have faced the sack. I’m not convinced by Roberto, but the young Pt
M
W
cat did what was asked of him. He will grow from the Ponferradina match - and the gloves are his to lose. Ditto Salva Ruiz, who came in for Llorente at left-back. Yes, the kid is highly-regarded and an Under-19 international. But this was a big test in a tricky away match. Again the kid did well. When you include Raul Camara at right-back and centre-half Carlos, along with Aitor Sanz and Quique Rivero in midfield, you get six players who were not part of the promotion side. D
L

Gc
Include Ayoze, who Medina insisted was ready to step up from the B team, and you see how big a win this was for the Director of Football. One swallow doesn’t make a winter, as we say here, but it’s a start. After this weekend, the fixture list gets a little kinder and, if Tenerife can avoid defeat, they will certainly start looking up rather than down. Chairman Miguel Conception said this week that the goal is to finish mid-table, and he believes the club is on course to achieve this. Medina shares his sentiments, saying: “We all want to be in a more comfortable position. I think we are doing everything right, but we don’t have the points we deserve. “Maybe that will change after last weekend. Time will tell if it’s a turning point, but I think so.” It’s worth pointing out that at this stage last season, arch-rivals Las Palmas were bottom with fewer points yet still finished in the playoffs! What? I can dream, can’t I? Medina told a press conference he is pleased with the strength of the squad and what
has happened to Aragoneses: “There are moments when a coach has to make a decision,” he said. “Sergio has been fine with it, as you would expect. He gets along great with Cervera and knows it’s nothing personal. “As for the other players who are not involved, they have been working hard in training. We can only play 14 and they understand that. “They know that when they get the chance they have to take it. This is normal.” This Saturday, there is a rare floodlight match as big fish Deportivo La Coruña arrive for a 7pm kick-off. The match begins after El Classico finishes. So you could say that Barcelona v Real Madrid is the warm-up act! You can’t beat a match under lights and a large crowd are expected for the visit of a Deportivo side who are fast becoming a yo-yo act. It’s been slush or champagne for Deportivo fans over the last few seasons and, in some ways, it’s a miracle they are here at all. Depending on which outlet or newspaper you believe, they owe anywhere between 100 and 250 million euros.
It makes Tenerife’s 20 million debt look like chump change. Deportivo’s place in this league was confirmed just eight hours before the deadline, and the squad was thrown together at the last minute. The fact that they are sitting pretty in fourth place is astonishing, and also worrying for the rest of the division. In what looks a very tight league, they are the one side who could go on a run and leave the rest for dead. They won the Segunda under Jose Luis Oltra the last time they were here two seasons ago and, after a sticky start, they are flying. They are five unbeaten and have won four of their five away games without conceding a goal. Oh, and they also won in Las Palmas on opening night. Former Atletico Madrid striker Borja is their star man this season. He didn’t pull up too many trees at Huesca last season, but he has already bagged five goals in just eight starts. He’s tall and a handful, and he will be joined by Rudy, who is due a goal. And Deportivo’s midfield is packed with experience. Argentine Culio played Champions League football with Galatasaray and Cluj, Cezary Wilk did likewise at Wisla Krakow, while Alex Bergantinos has been around forever, yet is still only 28. And then there is captain Manuel Pablo. He has played over 350 league games for the side and was part of the team who won La Liga for the first and only time back in 2000. For Tenerife striker Aridane, it will be the first time he has faced his former side. “I know a good few of the Depor lads from when I was playing with them in the B team.” he said. “It will be nice to play them, but even nicer to score and win!” Let’s hope it is set up for him!

Amistad on course at last IT’S not easy to keep going when you are struggling every Friday night. So fair play to Amistad 1, who have been propping up Division 1 for many weeks. They finally secured a much-deserved win last Friday, after 18 attempts! That it came at promotion-chasers, Gaffers B, will give them even more encouragement. Another interesting result was achieved by Naughty Nautas as they whitewashed Barracuda Bytes at home, while leaders Rood beat Emerald Lounge 5-3.
The Bar 180 derby ended in stalemate for the B and C teams, and another drawn match came at Trap Door as Summerlands claimed the last rubber. Elsewhere, Marilyns were thumped 7-1 at home by visiting Chipeque. In Division 2, Tenerife Sun walked next door to face the Playgirls, and walked back with seven points. The Shamrocks put the memory of last week’s defeat behind them as they beat local rivals Bar 180 D, 6-2. That result puts La Caña Lancers within
PRemier division ResultS
striking distance of third place after they also cruised to a 6-2 win - at Amistad 2. Sundowners lost the trebles, but won the match at Barracuda Hunters, while Phoenix Flights enjoyed a fine evening at Picassos. The match ended all-square after the Abrigos outfit took the last leg. This secretary was scratching his head and consulting the fixture list as Pas O Nadas and The Rebels faced each other for the third time in five weeks! Alas, though, no deja
vu for the Rebels this time as Pas O Nadas ran out 5-3 winners. There was a flurry of maximums in the Premier League, and none more celebrated than the one from Playboys’ captain Fluff. He was ably assisted with 114 and 97 checkouts from team-mate Alex. Rather odd, then, that they struggled against fellow relegation battlers Scruffy Macs, and had to take the trebles leg to earn a draw. A corker of a match unfolded at Bar 180 A as they hosted Ourplace
Naturals. A plethora of high scores, mixed in with 180s from Scouse Mick and Wayne for the home side, and one from the Naturals’ Nathan, made this one of the games of the season. But, Bar 180 held their nerve, and claimed a last leg 5-3 victory. Phoenix Bar were pushed hard by a fine performance from Vikings Ensecan. The Phoenix had to dig deep for their 5-3 win, which included a maximum from Mitch and one from the visitors’ Joel. Palms Sports Bar had a much easier
evening, as they faced La Caña Pirates. Tom and Graham both hit 180s and Graham just missed a 170, the third dart going into the 25 slot. Daniel, apparently, was looking the other way! The Pub seemed to have a bit of an off-night and had to wait for the last leg to claim victory over Gaffers A, while comeback of the week came at Target Bar. Target Army were 3-0 down early on, but produced an amazing turnaround to beat in-house rivals Target Titans.

Knights slay sad Terrace THERE has not been a whitewash this season in Division One of the Direct Telecom Pool League, but we nearly had one on Tuesday. Phoenix Knights were expected to make a real title charge this campaign, but those hopes went up in smoke after a poor start. But they seem to be in the groove now, and they obliterated Terrace Bar A, who ended up resembling their nickname as the Suicide Squad. Bubbles’ early defeat by Conrad - he would later avenge that loss - was the Knights only reverse as they put the Terrace team in their place. It was nice to see Les back on form and he secured a hat trick, including two wins over a poor Malcolm. Knights are now up to third, but a massive 12 points behind Tenerife Hammers A, who are still 100%. The Peacocks were their latest prey and again the defending champions were too good. Bizarrely, they lost the first and last rubbers (Jambo & Jet) in an otherwise comfortable night. Gaffers A won again, this time at Phoenix Potters. Maybe the bar improvements put off the Old Boys as Gaf-
fers collected another important three points with a 9-3 success. La Caña A lost again, making it four straight, with Exiles A again showing their topflight teeth. The highlight was Leon beating his Dad twice! La Caña A need to arrest the slump, but they face Gaffers A on Tuesday. Toscales A got a good-looking point at home to Treehouse A, but they should have had more. Their first win of the season was right in front of them as they raced 4-0 and then 6-2 in front. But the Treehouse dug in and ground out a fine draw. Tenerife Hammers C are in real relegation trouble after their latest defeat. Inn The Pink A know how to grab defeat from the jaws of victory and looked like throwing more points in the bin on Tuesday. They were 5-1 up, only for the Hammers to roar back. Paul had lost his previous six frames, yet he secured a hattrick to give Hammers hope. But Gareth held his nerve twice to win vital frames and get Pink over the line. And Dreamers A are finally in the win column. They beat Palms A 7-5 in a tight match

James Place are back on top of Division Two after their second straight 11-1 win. Just like last week, they lost the opening frame only to win the rest! They moved back up after Inn The Pink B had to settle for a point at Bluebell A. The Rangers lads are earning a reputation for taking points off the top sides. And if they can reproduce that against other teams, they should be in the mix come June. Bar 13’s charge was checked
at Next Door, but they were delighted to leave with a point after being 6-2 down! Hoppys Bar are still unbeaten and could be the division’s dark horse. They accounted for Cosy Corner A 8-4 and they have a decent run coming up. Palms B have dropped to fifth after being shocked by Gaffers B, while hat-tip of the week goes to Terrace Bar B. Not only did they restore some bar pride by beating Tenerife Pool Tables by the same score that their A team

Castan blossoms on Bluetrail MORE than 1,100 runners from 20 nationalities took part in the annual Tenerife Bluetrail event at the weekend.
Parts of the course around Teide had to be closed because of the harsh weather on Saturday morning, with wind gusts of 80mph, relative humidity of 97% and minus eight degrees at the summit.

So, the alternative trail was used, shortening the Ultra route by 5.5kms. Segovian David Lopez Castan won the event, completing the 95.5-mile, South-to North-course crossing in 10hrs 56mins 3secs. Second was Francisco Rodriguez in 1059.12 and Alberto Pelaez third in a time of 11-5.57. Xari Adrian won the women’s category comfortably, covering the route between Los Cristianos and Puerto de
la Cruz in 12hrs 59mins 9secs. Ursula Gonzalez and Caterina Ponzano were second and third, with times of 14-18.48 and 1525.43 respectively. Over 500 athletes took part in the trail course, with Francisco Martin Gomez dominating the race from the early stages, and finishing in 2hrs 3mins 24secs, followed by Jose Luis Hinojosa and Rayco Diaz. The first woman home was Paula Martin, fol-
lowed by Leticia Martin and Evelia Candelaria García Morales.
And by 2pm, all of the runners had crossed the line and were home
safely to put the lid on a fabulous, if strenuous, weekend’s racing.

Football rowdies bailed
TWO men were bailed by magistrates after a linesman was hit on the back of the head with a blue smoke-emitting flare during Sunday’s Aston Villa-Tottenham Hotspur Premier League match. David Bryan was struck by the canister, initially thought to be a lit flare. Shortly after the match, won 2-0 by Tottenham, police arrested the men aged 25 and 47. They were later released on bail and will reappear in court on 28th November.
Sir Alex hammers Becks and Keane SIR ALEX Ferguson is convinced David Beckham chose celebrity status over football legendary – because of his wife, Victoria.
The former Manchester United manager’s eye-opening autobiography, launched in London on Wednesday, rips apart many of the stars with whom he achieved so much success. But he reserved his vitriol mainly for Beckham and his wife, as well his former captain Roy Keane and Wayne Rooney to a lesser extent. At the launch, he blamed Beckham’s Spice Girl wife for the midfielder not becoming one of United’s all-time greats, saying: “The big problem for me: he fell in love with Victoria, and that changed everything. He writes: David was the only player I managed who chose to be famous, who made
it his mission to be famous outside the game. “He lost the chance to be an absolute top-dog player. He wanted to give it all up for a new career, a new lifestyle, for stardom.” And Sir Alex accuses Beckham of wasting his glittering career when, while still at the height of his powers, he joined LA Galaxy in 2007 from Real Madrid,
who bought him from United in 2003. “There was no footballing reason for him to go to America,” says Fergie. “He was giving up top-level football - you should never surrender what you’re good at.” But he still confessed to regarding the Chingford-born Beckham as “like a son”, adding: “I hold no rancour towards David at all.”
It’s probably water off a duck’s back to Beckham, who is worth untold millions after playing for three of the top sides in the world: United, Real and AC Milan, and securing huge advertising deals. The other player to feel the wrath of Fergie was Irishman Roy Keane, from County Cork. He infuriated his manager with a swingeing attack on some of his fellow players on the club’s TV channel in 2005. It led to his departure and Ferguson, who described the midfielder as “intimidating and ferocious”. He added: “What I noticed as I was arguing with him was his eyes, narrowed to black beads. It was frightening to watch - and I’m from Glasgow!” As for striker Wayne Rooney, now performing at his best again for United under new manager David Moyes, the question of whether he asked Sir Alex for a transfer at the end of last season will rumble on and on.
Tenerife road rally
Rio and Hodgson signed up
MANCHESTER United’s Rio Ferdinand and England manager Roy Hodgson have agreed to join chairman Greg Dyke’s England Commission. It follows criticism of the FA appointing the first eight members of the commission without any representative from an ethnic minority. Ferdinand’s appointment will go some way to answering that criticism because he was also an outspoken critic of the handling of the John Terry racism case, which concerned his brother, Anton.
Spanish fans’ racist taunts
YAYA TOURE, Manchester City’s stand-in captain, was the victim of monkey chants during his team’s 2-1 Champions League win at Real Sociedad on Wednesday. The seething midfielder called on UEFA to impose serious sanctions on the Spanish club following the disgraceful behaviour of some home fans. Toure, skipper in the absence of injured Vincent Kompany, informed the referee, but no on-field measures were taken. Later, however, City officials complained to the UEFA, and Toure said: “I’m not just disappointed - I’m furious. “As captain, I was wearing an armband which said ‘No to racism”, and UEFA must take action, or players with the same colour of skin will always be in the same position.”
