A TIME TO REMEMBER
HUNDREDS of expats in Tenerife will pay homage on Sunday to those who have fallen in battle over the years.
They will all be observing Remembrance Sunday, which is just that: a time to remember loved ones and friends who have made the supreme sacrifice for their countries. They will remember the millions of injured, and the countless millions who still grieve from conflicts past and present. Veterans, members of the Armed Forces and youth organisations, members of the public and congregations will gather at war memorials and churches throughout the UK and many other allied countries across the world to pay their respects. More than 75% of the UK population are expected to observe Sunday’s silence, with many also attending church services, or watching one on TV. Remembrance Day itself is perhaps the most special day of the year in that on 11th November, 1918 at 11am, World War 1 ended with an armistice - a peace treaty. That is why, at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month, the twominute silence is observed traditionally. And Remembrance Sunday is always held on the Sunday nearest that date. The red remembrance poppy has become a
familiar emblem of Remembrance Day because, the poem In Flanders Fields. These poppies had bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their brilliant red colour an appropriate symbol for the blood spilled in the war. The poppies were first introduced by the American Legion to honour their dead soldiers in World War 1. However, they were soon adopted by the Commonwealth countries. On Sunday - and in the weeks building up to it - the Brits have all worn

In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below a poppy to acknowledge the Royal British Legion and its astonishing work carried out every day. For 91 years, it has supported members of the Armed Forces Services, past and present, and spends some £1.4 million weekly on help for the less fortunate among them.
A British Legion spokesman said: “British troops have always been posted to some of the world’s most dangerous trouble spots, and they may need our help in the future.” This most worthy of organisations was formed on Sunday, 15th May 1921, from an amalgamation of four other associations, with the express intention of helping ex-service personnel and their dependents in need. Remembrance Sunday is also known as Armistice Day or even Poppy Day, And Tenerife Poppy Appeal organiser Kelly, who performs a sterling task each year, said: “Wars of all ages have seen so many hurt and injured, and this is where we come in. “Any amount gets you a poppy, but please be as generous as possible, and wear your poppy with pride.” The main service here in the South of the Is-
land is always held at Westhaven Bay, Costa del Silencio, staged by The British Legion. It is an open-air event, starting at 10.30am, and is well attended every year. In fact, the numbers continue to increase annually, and everyone is advised to wear a sun hat and bring a bottle of water because of the heat. The majority of guests, including former Tenerife Cabildo President Ricardo Melchior, together with the general public, will have arrived by 10.20am. The Service of Remembrance starts promptly at 10.30, when Warrant officer 1st class, Royal Marines, Richard Sweeny, who is leading the service, welcomes everyone. Music will be provided by Kris Richards. a past Musical Director for the Prince’s Trust, Next comes the laying of the wreaths at the altar by representatives of the Army, the Royal Navy, and the Royal Air force – the Armed Forces. During the ceremony The Act of Contrition will be read in English by the Chairman of the Royal British Legion, Lance Corporal Don Young, of the Royal East Kent Regi-
ment, followed by a Spanish reading of The Act by his wife, Elizabeth. The service will contain several hymns, and prayers, led by Richard Sweeny. The customary twominute silence will be observed at exactly 11 o’clock, followed by The Last Post and Reveille, played by trumpeter Jo Cassidy. The service ends with the National Anthem and then, during the final hymn, the congregation make their way to the cliff’s edge as the wreaths are cast into the ocean. Pastor Adrian McBride will be leading another popular Remembrance Day Service at Cristianos Community Church, to which everyone is welcome. Adrian, an Evangelical Pastor who knows all about conflict, served alongside Britain’s Armed Forces during what has become known as “The Troubles”. As a sergeant in the Royal Ulster Constabulary he spent 17 years in danger and under constant threat. Even when returning home, he and his family were never allowed to forget that their lives were surrounded by a constant atmosphere of danger, and their house was protected with alarms, floodlights and cameras. Adrian ended his service in 1992 in Armagh, where he had been part of the joint police army team who secured the lives of ordinary people in what had been given the rather appropriate name of “Bandit Country”. In The Troubles years, 1,117 men and women of the joint Security Forces were lost in terrorist attacks. Of that number, over 300 were from the Royal Ulster Constabulary. In recognition of their outstanding service and huge sacrifice, the RUC was awarded the George Cross by Her Majesty The Queen. It was the second time only that this bravery medal had been awarded to a group of people rather than an individual, the other being the people of Malta.

Floods galore and a touch of snow! LOS CRISTIANOS and Playa de Las Americas suffered most as Tenerife suffered a bettering from rain on Sunday - and there was even snow on Teide!
Arona and Adeje felt the full force of the storm, with flooding in some areas to a depth of over 2½ feet. Some shops and garages were swamped, and the TF-1 was awash at Las Chafiras, where traffic came to a standstill. There was serious motorway congestion for a while as vehicles became marooned in huge puddles. Firemen and local police were called to attend the worst hit-areas, like Avenida Chay-
ofita, San Telmo, Vista Sur and Torres del Sol as culverts and sewers overflowed. Some roundabouts and roads near the coast were clobbered, causing more traffic havoc. Businesses in Costa Adeje were also affected as rainwater built up in the streets, and there were a few minor traffic incidents. The old lady of Teide donned her white cape again for the first time in many months as snow fell at the 3,000-metre mark, where temperatures fell to minusseven degrees. It made for a striking, picture-postcard display on Monday morning as the sun took up its rightful place again after the previous day’s wash-out. Happily, despite the floods, no injuries were reported.
Our own Mont Blanc Victor VICTOR Chinea Oliva was the toast of Adeje after climbing Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. It was a magnificent achievement by the young Adeje man, who was applauded by Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and town councillors Adolfo Alonso Ferrera and Amada Trujillo Bencomo at a special ceremony. The 4,810-metre ascent, which borders France and Italy, is a target for thousands of climbers each year and Victor said: “It was a very difficult climb, but the experience was unforgettable.” The Mayor said in praise of the youngster: “I am really proud of the
Page 4
quality of our youngsters in Adeje. “We are continuing to move in the right direction and this is obviously what we want for our future. “We need people with commitment and courage, and our young people are living up to our expectations.” Climbers have been known to perish on Mont Blanc and although it is considered to be among the easier mountains for experienced climbers to
scale, for a novice like Victor, it was a remarkable effort. “Once presented with the challenge, you have to train very hard and have a lot of discipline in order to move forward,” he said. “I am already preparing for next year - and another mountain to conquer!” To get some idea of his success, Tenerife’s Teide, which towers above all in Spain, stands more than 1,000 metres below Mont Blanc.

Primark sales go through the roof CUT-PRICE Primark, where even the wealthy go shopping these days, this week announced record profits.
In contrast, strugglers Marks & Spencer, once the pride of the high street, revealed falling clothing sales for the ninth consecutive quarter. Primark, who are opening here in Tenerife in 2014, saw total sales rise by a whopping 22%, and its likefor-like figures were up 5% in the year to 14th September,. It pushed the bargainbuy store’s 44% profits to a record £514m and George Weston, boss of Associated British Foods (ABF), whose company’s own profits are up to just under £1.1billion as a result, said: “It was a remarkable year for Primark.” Now, it is crunch time for M&S, which faces a tough Christmas challenge to overturn its poor fortunes. The company’s firsthalf 2013 pre-tax profits were down 9% to £261.1m against the £289.5m realised the previous year. The High Street stalwart also experienced a 1.3% drop in like-forlike clothing and homeware sales during its July-September quarter. However, its food halls are still doing a roaring trade, with like-for-like sales up 3.2% - and it even saw a 15p rise in its shares price. The weak clothing and homeware numbers will increase the pressure on disappointed chief executive Marc Bolland. Clothing sales just haven’t recovered, and he will blame the unseasonably-warm autumn weather and fierce competition. Earlier this year, Bolland attempted to revive clothes sales, particularly womenswear, when he unveiled a new autumn/winter collec-
tion which analysts described as “make or break” for M&S and its chief executive. The latest sales figures cover the period up to the end of September, so Bolland will defend the performance and say that a fuller picture of its autumn/winter collection’s success will be scheduled in January. This week, M&S has launched its Christmas “Believe in Magic and Sparkle” advert, with a glossy Alice in Wonderland theme. It stars Rosie Huntingdon-Whitely as Alice, David Gandy as the Mad Hatter and Helena Bonham Carter as the Wizard of Oz. It makes this year’s Christmas trading period even more crucial, and Bolland’s position may be under threat if it did not go well. In contrast to M&S as it tries to kick-start its clothing sales, ABF paid tribute to Primark’s buying teams after autumn/winter and spring/summer ranges sold out with little discount. Primark’s UK expansion - it comes to Santa

Cruz next year - has been focused on increasing selling space in major cities, with the opening of its second store on London’s Oxford Street and extensions to Newcastle and Manchester shops. The company expects to add more than one million square feet of space before 2013 ends, including its first store in France, which will open in Marseille. Its new store formats, says officials, provide an “exciting, fashionable and fun shopping experience”. The company adds: “Strategically-placed mannequins help to inspire customers to choose outfits that are readily available on adjacent fixtures. And prominent signage and wider aisles enable easy navigation through the store. “We are also enhancing customer service by providing a higher ratio of fitting rooms and cash registers to ensure customers a smoother experience when trying on outfits and paying for them.”

Taxi drivers are planning another strike in November TENERIFE faces further transport chaos next week with taxi drivers set for another strike.
Leaders and senior representatives are calling for a fresh walk-out next Friday (15th Nov). Canarian Weekly understands that a meeting will be held on Wednesday to decide whether to go ahead with another day of disruption. It is understood that the cabbies’ angst at illegal taxis and transportation has support from other professionals, including bus and coach drivers. The proposed action is highly controversial because, while there is a feeling among the drivers that something has to be done, Friday is the busiest and most lucrative day of the week. That’s because it is the main “changeover” day of the week for Tenerife holiday-makers coming and going, which means heaps of business at the airport. Talks are planned over the weekend, and representatives hope to hold meetings with the Cabildo in an effort to find a workable solution.
Meanwhile, the mandatory day of rest for Santa Cruz taxi drivers passed pretty much without incident on Sunday. But there was evidence of both pessimism and optimism among those involved. Carmelo Peña, President of the Autonomous Taxi Workers’ Union, said there were moments of concern about discrimination. He was referring particularly to those drivers who are forced to take “more profitable” days off because of the new legislation. As an example, Peña mentioned the lucrative days for cabbies, when large cruise ships are in port. Some drivers will be obliged to stand down on those days, losing a potential income of between 100-200 euros. But optimistic Victor Melian, Tenerife Teletaxi association President, said there were some “positives”, although it was too early to make final judgments. He added that working five days a week would, ultimately, give drivers a better quality of life, as well as reducing the running costs of their vehicles.

Pensions and benefits - get what you’re due!
PAYMENTS by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to accounts in Tenerife and mainland Spain will soon need an International Bank Account Number (IBAN) and Bank Identification Code (BIC). After 31st January, Euro-zone banks will not accept any DWP direct payments without these details. If the DWP does not
Page 6
already hold them, you will soon receive a letter asking for them. You should complete the attached form and return it to them as soon as possible. Failure to do so may mean your payments being stopped. You can get the IBAN and BIC details from your bank account statement, or directly from your bank. If you have not re-
ceived a DWP letter, it may mean it has your details already, so you don’t need to do anything further. Those who have their pension or benefits paid into a UK bank account are not affected by this change. Officials from the Department for Work and Pensions are also reminding customers who have changed address, and who have yet to in-
form the DWP, to contact the International Pension Centre in Newcastle -upon-Tyne on 0044 191 218 7777 in order to make sure their details are up to date. Big money. . . big results? PAULINO RIVERO, President of the Canary Islands Government is seeking a 1,000-millioneuro investment to upgrade and modernise the archipelago’s tourism sector. Rivero was speaking in London at the World Travel Market, where the Canary Islands has a 42,0000sqm stand promoting the area. The President said tourism in the Canaries was strong, but added that there was always room for improvement. He said the government vehemently
opposed, “with all its might”, the privatisation of AENA (the Spanish Airports and Navigation Authority). This news comes as the announcement that between January and September, the UK tourist market to the Canaries increased by just under 3% against the same period last year. In real terms, it means an extra 74,500 visitors arrived from Britain, bringing the total UK tourists to around 2.7 million.
Wifi poachers disabled NEW technology is no stranger to cyber attacks, and five people of German and Austrian descent have been detained by police in Gran Canaria. They are accused of hi-jacking and disabling
wireless internet provision in a number of the island’s top hotels, thereby resulting in loss of provision of service in said hotels. The group are then believed to have offered their own internet

provision in the hotels whose networks they themselves had disabled. The resulting lack of provision resulted in loss of bookings to the affected hotels, not to mention numerous neg-
ative comments on social networking sites. This kind of crime is growing around the world especially in holiday destinations and it’s the first time this has been detected in the Canary Islands.
anguish of the Arona lifeguards worsening ARONA is this week being promoted at London’s World Travel Market under the banner “Beaches of Arona”.
But the 13 lifeguards who have continued to work without pay for over a year have been highlighting their situation in the municipality. The goodwill lifeguards, who have been surviving thanks to donations from tourists, have set up a small stand at Las Vistas beachfront outlining their plight. It now appears that they have been removed from the Social Security register, which means they also no longer qualify for basic medical cover.
It seems appalling that, for all their good, caring intentions, they are considered by the authorities to be on “indefinite strike”. One lifeguard said after a meeting with Arona’s Mayor, Francisco Niño: “The Municipal Government has admitted it has no idea how to tackle the situation.” A replacement for their previous employer, Sport and Salvament, is not being sought, apparently It leaves the outlook bleak because it is unlikely that any interested firm will want to take over that company’s debts since it went bankrupt. And even if a new company assumes the responsibility, the lifeguards are not guaranteed to be re-employed.

The bitter overseas wives who have to fend for themselves But it’s okay for their working husbands
The editor says...
THE first section of a three-part, worldwide Expat Survey, outlined by Canarian Weekly in the summer, has provided some eyeopening results.
Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
The Year of Change IT still seems strange to see David Moyes in charge of Manchester United after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. And here at Canarian Weekly, it has been weird putting the paper together without Ruth Summers. Ruth has been our Editor since January 2005 and she has done an amazing job. This newspaper has made giant strides under her leadership and it is unrecognisable from the one she took on all those years ago. Back then, fortnightly newspapers were still the fashion in Tenerife. They struggled to get a quality paper out every two weeks, while Ruth was able to produce a fresh, vibrant newspaper every Thursday afternoon. Under her command, we have deftly covered some of the biggest stories of the last eight years. And for me, none was bigger than the horrendous Los Cristianos beheading. It was a pleasure to work so closely with Ruth on that story as we juggled the demands of the British media with the sole intention of getting the story right. Rumours and confusion were everywhere, but with some hard work and a journalist’s nose we produced some outstanding copy. She leaves us with the British community’s favourite Tenerife-based newspaper.
And while I know she will enjoy the next few months with her feet up, I sincerely hope you will be reading her words in a column or two in 2014. This weekend is Remembrance Sunday and again, there are some big events planned here in Tenerife. It seems as though everyone is wearing a poppy and it’s on occasions such as this that I feel proud of the community we have here. War is the darkest shadow cast on mankind and, as L. Fletcher Prouty wrote: “The organising principle of any society is for war. The basic authority of the state over its people resides in its war powers.” Every family has felt the loss that war brings. While conflicts such as the World Wars slowly become tales told second-hand, we owe it to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, the time to pause, reflect and respect.

This initial Migration & Lifestyle study has delivered a detailed insight from those living outside their place of origin in almost 100 countries. It examined what residents in their chosen community liked or disliked about their adopted home, what media channels they followed and used to stay in touch with friends, family and the outside world, and how easy or hard they found it to integrate. Numerous wives, whose husbands have been transferred overseas, have had to contend with an unfamiliar country and culture, often a new language and, suddenly, no friends or family for support. They have shared their sense of bitter disappointment with their husbands’ employers for failing to appreciate the impact on the family unit; and their own sense of being left to tackle the challenge of establishing a home and integrating alone. And all the while, the companies were simply focussing on getting their spouses settled into their new workplace as quickly as possible. In some cases, relocation specialists were involved in catering for the career moves, but
they are still accused of not truly understanding and meeting the families’ needs. Emma Wood, Project Director for www.theexpatsurvey.com said: “For some women, particularly those with children, the sheer stress of the corporate relocation bordered not only on being a career breaker, but almost a marriage breaker as well. “These respondents are urging companies to take greater responsibility for getting the experience right - not just for their employees, but their families, too. “They recommend that those contemplating a move use social media to contact other company employees, their spouses and other expats in their chosen destination to get the full lowdown on what their move might really entail.” Emma added: “From the outset, The Expat Survey team have been committed to conducting the most far-reaching global research programme, and ensuring that each survey in our three-part annual study connects with expats to understand their true experiences. “We really want expats to have their say, and we need them to share their stories, good or bad, so that the statistical outcomes of each
survey can be placed in genuine context.” Despite the initial upheaval, 71% of respondents intend to remain outside their country of origin; while 22% are considering moving on to a new destination. And 8% have already set the wheels in motion to achieve this change. Churches are praised for providing a lot of practical support, as well as spiritual. Surprisingly, the South Korean Government is highlighted as being a superb relocation facilitator and integrator. But Japan and China are said to be places where securing a work permit is painful unless your employer has clout - or you have the right connections. Thousands of expats of many nationalities have responded so far, thanks to the fantastic coverage provided by the media around the world, and the on-going support from a growing number of reputable, collaborative partners. The second survey in the programme, Retail & Finance, has now been activated at www. theexpatsurvey.com . Emma said: “If you have moved to pastures new, whether or not you are working, we really need your input. “We want to understand what your important considerations are
when it comes to personal and household expenditure, banking and investments. “Also, what information resources you now tend to turn to when making these decisions and undertaking your financial planning.” Some newspaper and magazine owners have contacted The Expat Survey team to say that some of their readers do not have internet capabilities, but are keen to participate. As a result, the survey team have opened a phone line with answer machine so that expats can ring in to request copies. Call +44 (0)20 8464 5584 and state which surveys you require, your name, address and telephone number, and the team will post them to you. Completed surveys can be returned by post or fax, and contact details will be enclosed in the envelope. The Expat Survey does not share any personal details with any third parties, and has no links to Governments. Those who complete all three surveys are automatically entered into a prize draw to win £1,000, which can be donated to charity if the winner wishes. Share your views! Please follow the team on Twitter @ExpatSurvey13.

No more seat fights - on Ryanair flights!
Pay back £200m or face another 10 years inside A FORMER nightclub bouncer, serving a 13year sentence for drug-dealing, faces a further 10 years behind bars.
Curtis “Cocky” Warren, said to have laundered £10m-£15m a week from smuggling drugs, must pay back nearly £200m within 28 days or pay the penalty. It is believed to be Europe’s largest confiscation order. The 50-year-old former Liverpool nightclub bouncer is regarded as one of Europe’s most notorious drug dealers. He was sent down for plotting to smuggle cannabis with a street value of £1m into Jersey. Warren is being held in Belmarsh Prison, in the Thamesmead area of South-East London. A statement from the State of Jersey’s Law Officers’ Department read: “The Royal Court of Jersey has today ordered that £198m be confiscated from Curtis Warren. “The confiscation proceedings are the result of several years of extensive investigation into the criminal career and financial affairs of one of Europe’s mostnotorious organised criminals.” The case primarily featured evidence related to cocaine trafficking between 1991 and 1996
Page 10
which “generated huge sums of monies”. The shipments ranged from 500 kilos to multiple tonnes and gained “huge” profits, with a two-ton shipment of cocaine able to sell on the UK market for £40m wholesale, the statement said. Warren was the first criminal to be the subject of a High Court move to protect the public last month. Designed to prevent reoffending, it will impose restrictions on Warren’s access to mobile phones and telephone kiosks, as well as limitations on bank accounts. Serious Crime Prevention Orders are normally made at Crown Court following a conviction. But Warren was convicted in 2009 in Jersey, which is outside the jurisdiction of England and Wales. The National Crime Agency (NCA) said Warren co-ordinated a global drugs empire from his cell at Jersey’s La Moye prison while awaiting trial between 2007 and 2009. He was alleged to have used several illicit mobile phones to contact a network of associates in an attempt to continue his drug trafficking empire. Some 35,000 calls across 41 countries between March 2008 and October 2009 involving Warren’s mobile phones were analysed during the investigation.
RYANAIR will reintroduce fullyallocated seating on all of its flights from February.
The move comes after numerous complaints from customers about the frenzied rush by passengers to secure the best seats. The company said in a statement: “This return to allocated seating is
Ryanair’s response to the enormous demand from our customers in recent weeks, via Ryanair’s ‘Tell MOL’ customer-feedback initiative. “Ryanair’s decision to launch fully-allocated seating is also part of the airline’s commitment to listen to its customers.” The announcement came as the Irelandbased company re-
vealed a profit rise of just 1% to £510m, in the six months to 30th September. Two months after it issued a first profit warning in a decade, it has now cut its profit forecast further for the financial year ending in March, to £423m and £440m. It had previously estimated the full-year profit at £487m. Europe’s largest car-
rier by seats sold, said traffic rose 2% to 49 million passengers in the period, but also said intense competition was pushing down winter fares by around 10%. Shares in Ryanair were down more than 12% in trading on Monday afternoon, as investors fled from airline stocks. And easyJet shares lost 4.55% as the negative sentiment spread.
Car sales are driven up THE Canaries last month enjoyed a 6% increase in the registration of new cars against the same 2012 period. But buyers went crazy in the Aragon and Extremadura communities, with sales up by 63.3% and 56.1% respectively. Spain, in general, saw October sales figures reach 60,301 cars, up 34.4% from a year ago, And for the first 10 months of 2013, the country recorded 20.96% more cars sold than last year. Apart from a sales drop in the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, there were increases throughout Spain’s automobile sector.

News ARE you a breakfast person, or do you skip the eggs and bacon in the hope of keeping your weight down?
If you’re in the latter category, you could be putting your health in danger, according to recent reports which link the “no-breakfast” diet to obesity, diabetes - and even flu. A new study by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health said missing out put an “extra strain” on the body, with men 27% more likely to suffer heart attacks or heart disease. But the experts are divided. “There is nothing magical about breakfast that makes it particularly important for health,” says Dr Susan Jebb, head of diet and population health at the Medical Research Council. “I suspect you’d get the same risks - such as weight gain - with skipping lunch or dinner. But it’s a less-common behaviour, so people don’t study it.” But the pro-breakfast brigade insist the metabolic rate - the speed at

Breakfast such a weighty subject which we burn calories drops during sleep, and is “kick-started” by that morning tradition. Yet Naveed Sattar, professor of metabolic medicine at Glasgow University, believes the evidence is unconvincing. He says: “In trials like this one on heart disease, you have to ask, ‘Does skipping breakfast put you at risk of heart attack, or are people who skip breakfast simply more likely to have unhealthy characteristics and be disorganised and mindless about eating?’” If you struggle to eat in the hours after waking, it could be down to your biological clock, which is determined in part by your genes. Sleep expert Dr Neil Stanley, says: “Around 10% of people inherit genes that mean their clock is set a little slower,
so they struggle to wake up in the morning, and this can affect appetite. “When we wake, a number of processes begin to get the body ready for daytime, including the release of hormones that make us feel hungry. “But if you’re an ‘owl’, who likes to stay up late but finds it hard to get up in the morning, you won’t wake up feeling hungry, and the idea of breakfast will be difficult. “So don’t force yourself to eat when you wake up at 7am. You’ll prob-
ably find you start feeling hungry around 9-10am when you get to the office, so you could have something then.” But Dr Stanley also says that irregular bedtimes can also cause your clock to be out of sync, so try going to bed at the same time each night and you might start feeling hungry in the mornings.” Some experts question the importance attached to eating breakfast above all other meals, but a number of studies have
shown that doing so protects against obesity. This may not be because it’s breakfast as such, but because it is one of the three important daily meals. Jane Ogden, professor of health psychology at the University of Surrey., points out: “If you don’t eat breakfast, you’ll be starving by mid-morning so you’ll snack. “Then you won’t eat a proper lunch and you’ll be hungry again midafternoon and need to snack, and so on.” Last year, a team at Imperial College London presented the results of a study involving 21 men and women, all around the age of 25, who skipped breakfast one day but then had it the next. And on the day they skipped breakfast, not only did they eat 20%
more at lunch, but they were more likely to seek unhealthier, high-calorie foods. A new fasting plan, the Mini-Fast Diet, devised by American physician Julian Whitaker, encourages you to skip breakfast. It also suggests fasting all morning and exercising before eating your first meal of the day at noon. You then eat sensibly for the rest of the day. The theory is because you fast only for a morning and not a full day, as you do on some modern diets, you’ll find it easier to eat sensibly. Whitaker claims that in a trial of his diet, volunteers lost an average nine pounds after 12 weeks. So, to breakfast or not? You pays your money, you listens to experts … you takes your choice!

Arona’s tasty Food Fair Rubbish dispute reaches stalemate STRIKE action for 82 rubbish-collectors in Puerto de la Cruz now seems unavoidable. That’s the mood of employers Intersindical Canarias, who sent a clear message to those in charge of cleaning and rubbish removal in the town. After pleas from the workers “fell on deaf
ears”, the threat of strike action from midnight tonight (Friday) is becoming a reality. The protest revolves around a streamlining of the service, which will result in a 30% reduction in the wage bill, pay cuts and extended working hours, which one employer has refused to implement.
8th November - 14th November 2013
THE ninth annual Canary Food Fair takes place in Arona this weekend, with more than 50 suppliers displaying their produce.
The Esplanade pier courtyard, next to the Casa del Mar in Los Cristianos, hosts tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday. The venue is perfect for the occasion as it is picturesque and has
lots of parking. Food producers from all over the Canaries gather to bring typical gastronomic products from almost every corner of the Canaries. This popular event is always a meeting place for thousands of tourists and residents during the two days. You can taste and buy a variety of products such as cheeses, wines, sweets and other local delicacies. The Food Fair is also a bit of a knees-up as
local bands show off their talents. And this year’s entertainment will be provided by four local folk groups from Arona. They are from the Municipal School of Folklore in Arona, folk group Verodal, I’Gara and the friends of Punta Scratch. And the music begins at noon on both days. Evelin Santos, Arona’s Councillor for Tourism, said: “It’s a great occasion and something we all
look forward to every year. “It’s a great chance to show off what we can produce, and it’s always enjoyed by visitors to the Island, as well as those who live here. “We also enjoy the music from the young bands and it gives the event a pleasant atmosphere. “It is something a little different and I hope as many people as possible can taste, drink and enjoy the atmosphere.”

Enjoy an Experience with the senior brigade THE Over-35s Soccer Experience Tenerife International is here again, and it’s a chance to watch some of the football stars of a few years ago here on your doorstep.
The eighth annual tournament starts this evening (Friday), at Adeje’s Las Torres Sports Complex, just off exit 79B on the TF-1 (McDonalds and Mercadona exit). Teams will gather and play a few friendlies, but the competition gets serious tomorrow (Saturday), continuing through until the Sunday finale. Plenty of teams will come over from the UK, including several expros from the English and Scottish Premier Leagues, and Spain’s La Liga.
It costs nothing to watch them play some local ex-pat teams absolutely free, so come along and see how many of these golden oldies you can recognise. One of the nicest aspects of this year’s tournament is that an over35s team will be made up of many former Nottingham Forest players, including ex-England and Manchester United midfielder Neil Webb, and ex-Ipswich and Jamaica star David Johnson. Recently-retired Championship star striker Jack Lester and other ex-Forest stars will be on the pitch as well. But don’t think these ex-pros will run rings around the local sides, either. Over the years, our ex-pat teams have worked hard to prepare for this tournament. And they get better and better by the year, sometimes putting the visit-
ing teams to shame! But while it is intense rivalry during the competition, off the pitch it’s great fun and really friendly. The games last just 15 minutes each, and you can come along at any time of the day. So why not drop in for a bit of senior soccer magic - and a laugh or two to boot? Soccer Experience say a special thanks to John Fawcett, Dean Locke
and Martin Cooke, and their Royale International Company, for their great ongoing support and friendship. Also, on a special note, we have some of the Forest team flying in from as far away as Hong Kong and Toronto. The ex-pro teams will have to play well and use their vast experience because they are not favourites to win the tournament! Previous winners Glasgow Bhoys and Otch’s Liverpool Victoria will fancy their chances again. And a local Tenerife team who always play well are Silverpoint Vacations, from our local Soc-
cer Experience league. Let’s not forget, either, Club la Costa, last year’s surprise package, who were worthy winners. Shaine Hope and the boys, who are looking strong, are favourites to regain the title, having had a great year playing in the weekly Soccer Experience leagues over here. This is also a wonderful opportunity for any over35 footballers who would like to play against some ex-pros. Some of the social travelling teams have asked for one or two more players, so if you would like to play with some new friends, please contact us quickly.
Another bonus for players and spectators alike is an appearance by the award-winning Tenerife Tigers cheerleaders, from Callao Salvaje’s Let’s Dance school. The girls will be performing a wonderful cheerleader and dance routine - and it’s a mustsee event. Soccer Experience would also like to say a massive thank-you to our great friend and supporter, Ivan Rhodes, and family - and all the gang at Club Olympus - along with many other people involved in the tournament. Everyone pulls together to make the event a truly enjoyable fiesta of football for all! Don’t forget, entry is absolutely free during the three-day event, so bring the family down and cheer on these legends - and all the local slow-motion players. Amy whistles up FA Cup first AMY FEARN makes football history tomorrow (Saturday) when she becomes the first woman to referee an FA Cup first-round match. The 35-year-old, who takes charge of the Corby-Dover clash, was also the first woman to referee in the Football League. That was in 2010 when Tony Bates suffered a calf strain and Fearn, as senior assistant, handled the final 20 minutes of Coventry’s 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest. She was also the second woman to run the line at the highest level after Wendy Toms. In 2006, assistant referee Fearn was verbally
Page 14
attacked by Luton manager Mike Newell after his side’s 3-2 defeat by QPR. After Luton were denied a penalty, Newell said: “She shouldn’t be here. I know that sounds sexist, but I am sexist. “This is not park football, so what are women doing here?” He later apologised. Toms, appointed to FIFA’s approved referees’ list in 1999, no longer ref-
erees at the highest level. Her career highlight was when she ran the line in the 2000 Leicester-Tranmere. Worthington Cup Final. Another woman, Sian Massey, has also officiated as an assistant referee in the Premier League and Football League. But she was shrouded in controversy after her second Premier League game - Liverpool’s 3–0 win at Wolves in 2011. Sky Sports presenters Andy Gray and Richard Key were sacked for making sexist remarks. Gray was heard discussing the appearance of Massey and disputing the opinion that she was “a bit of a looker”.

Tigers keep on roaring! THE dazzling achievements of cheerleaders Tenerife Tigers, have been recognised by Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga. After picking up no fewer than eight national trophies, and four runner-up awards in the first Espana Cheer & Dance Competition in Madrid, the team of girls were feted by the Mayor. The award-winning cheerleaders from Callao Salvage each received a beautiful scarf, embellished with the Tenerife Tigers logo and that of the Adeje Ayuntamiento. And the Town Hall even supplied scarfs for all the girls who were unable to take part in the event. The coaching staff,
comprising Amanda Lambert, who owns the Let’s Dance academy in Callao Salvaje and is head coach, Zoe Harker, UK coach and mentor, Tez Shakleton and Katie Da Costa, were also feted by the Mayor. He was accompanied by Sports Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera and Amada Trujillo Bencomo, District Councillor for Callao Salvaje, who were also keen to meet the municipalities’ latest stars. A delighted Amanda said: “These girls are all athletes, and we took a team of 28 girls, aged 7-18, to compete in the categories of Cheer, Stunts, Pom Dance, Lyrical Dance and Jazz Dance and came away

with 12 trophies.” What made their achievements so special was that the academy had been invited to take part by Spanish Cheer and Dance Director Sr. Fredy Bedoya, who flew to Tenerife in the summer to meet Amanda and Co after following the Tigers’ progress on their Facebook site. Cheerleading in Spain has become recognised only recently and this is the first time ever a competition has been arranged. Mayor Rodríguez Fraga encouraged the girls to continue training wtih enthusiasm, and he told them: “The love and effort you put into the activities performed is transmitted to the rest of your lives.”

Cricket bowled over by Tenerife
COMEDY legend Jimmy Cricket is still glowing after his recent trip to Tenerife.
His performance at Showtime was acclaimed, and he also enjoyed catching the
Page 20
Sound of Musicals show. The Belfast-born, Rochdale-based comedian said: “I really enjoyed the Showtime Tenerife show, which had a great array of talented singers and dancers, who performed a number of
songs from the shows.” He added: “This was a great visit to the Island for me, as, apart from the warm climate, the audience at Showtime gave me a standing ovation! “Thanks to comedian Steve Salter for per-
forming a great warmup spot for me. “I was also thrilled to be able to catch up with some old neighbours of mine from Rochdale, who were holidaying in Tenerife. All in all, a successful trip the Canary Islands!”
Roundabout for black spot THE much-needed roundabout in the Charco del Pino area of Los Llanos area will be built next year.
It is a black spot, as every driver and pedestrian knows, and Granadilla Town Hall has secured the necessary land. Tenerife Cabildo will make available the 400,000 euros necessary to fund the project. Mayor Jaime Gonzalez Cejas recently signed an agreement through which the owners will give up the required land by the dreaded crosssroads. Gonzalez is delighted with the progress made, since this will enable the Council to keep local residents happy, and motorists even happier at the thought of negotiating this junction without fear of a collision. The total cost will embrace two bus stops and a vital pedestrian
crossing to enhance the safety of residents and neighbours, who use the road to access shops, homes and existing bus stops. The Mayor emphasised that this work will also make a significant improvement towards speeding up access to the North of the Island. Local councillors believe the roundabout and pedestrian crossing will prove to be a major step towards improving road safety all round. With many vehicles making the journey between Charco del Pino and the neighbouring region of San Miguel de Abona, it will also be a blessing for those drivers. “The roundabout has been on the cards since the initial draft in 2000,” said the Granadilla Mayor. “It was modified five years later and, finally, after repeated requests by the current Cabildo, it will become a reality very soon.”

Dave, however, has other ideas, and wanting to promote a more modern image of mosque-goers, he chooses Sajid, an attractive, ‘metrosexual’ friend of the Khan family. Khan decides if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em and goes to extreme lengths in order to prove to Dave that he’s modern and metrosexual too. What he hasn’t realised is that Sajid is home alone with Mrs Khan, and the reason for her makeover suddenly becomes blindingly clear. He rushes home to confront the pair, but is not prepared for what he discovers when he arrives. Starring: Adil Ray, Shobu Kapoor, Matthew Cottle, Maya Sondhi, Bhavna Limbachia, Abdullah Afzal

John Inverdale presents live action from the Millennium Stadium as Six Nations champions Wales host South Africa. The Welsh provided the bulk of the victorious British Lions side from their tour of Australia this summer and, buoyed from that display, will be keen to erase memories of their last meeting with the Springboks - a closely fought 17-16 defeat in their opening match of the 2011 World Cup. Toby Faletau’s 54th minute try had looked set to give Wales just their second victory in 26 games against South Africa; that was until Francois Hougaard’s late converted try broke Welsh hearts.

Peril From the Seas. Nick Crane leads a journey around the wildest shores of the British Isles to explore dramatic untold stories of peril from the seas. Nick tells the astonishing tale of the Great Storm of 1703, the most devastating weather event ever to hit southern Britain, when lethal winds whipped in from the Atlantic to claim the lives of one in five seamen of the Royal Navy. On the tiny Scottish island of Tiree, Dick Strawbridge reveals a remarkable story from the Second World War of how the timing of the D-Day landings was determined by the heroism of RAF weather forecasters, flying hazardous missions far out into the storms of the Atlantic. Poet and storyteller Ian McMillan, uncovers the forgotten story of another shipwreck which held Britain transfixed at the outbreak of the First World War. For two terrible days in 1914 more than 200 victims aboard the hospital ship Rohilla fought for their lives within sight of the Yorkshire fishing port of Whitby.

Remembrance Sunday BBC ONE, 10.20am
Her Majesty The Queen leads the nation’s Remembrance Sunday commemorations. The Prime Minister, leading politicians, representatives of many of the world’s religions, dignitaries from around the Commonwealth and military leaders join thousands of veterans from countless conflicts for the two minute silence at 11 am, the service and march past. All gather to remember those men and women who have died serving their country.Presented by David Dimbleby, with Sophie Raworth. Alongside the formal ceremony, we have several interviews, live and pre recorded, with men and women who have served in conflicts past and present. Among them:1. Robin Scott Elliot looks back on his family history to his great grandfather, Bertie Anderson who was killed in 1918, the last year of the First World War. Bertie was the eldest of four brothers, all four of them killed. 2. Colonel Matt Jackson of the Royal Marines. On Remembrance Sunday last year he was commanding 40 Commando in Afghanistan, this year he joins Sophie Raworth live in Whitehall to reflect on the 445 lives lost in Afghanistan and the importance of remembrance to today’s armed forces. 3. Eileen Younghusband. Now in her nineties, Eileen was one of an elite group of women who worked in great secrecy providing vital information for the RAF’s air defence against enemy bombing during the Second World War. Now, decades later, Eileen remembers her time as a woman at war.

CCTV cameras reveal that the burglar’s 12-year-old son was also in on the heist! The Humberside neighbourhood police team gets its first taste of ‘tweeting’. When a stolen mobile phone gets recovered after an attack on a man at a party in Hull, news of the subsequent arrests spreads across the county, via Twitter, for all to see. And a frightening late night fire rapidly takes a hold of a threestory house back in Bridlington. While the neighbourhood police team keep worried onlookers at bay, brave firefighters execute a daring rooftop rescue of two trapped residents.

Can You Trust Your Surgeon? Dispatches investigates the biggest cancer scandal in modern UK medical history. Surgeon Ian Paterson stands accused of performing inadequate operations on hundreds of NHS breast cancer victims, putting them at risk of a recurrence of their cancer. He also faces allegations that he performed unnecessary procedures at private hospitals on many more women who did not have cancer. Reporter Tazeen Ahmed reveals the missed opportunities to stop women being put in danger by his unapproved procedure: the so-called cleavage sparing mastectomy. Paterson is currently suspended, and facing four different investigations. In a health system which is supposed to be increasingly transparent, Tazeen asks why it took 17 years to stop this surgeon.

No problem, Tommy says; he’ll just sign the house over to Paul and Lisa - he believes Theresa won’t mind, as she has her own big house in Cheshire worth twice as much. But when Theresa visits, she is horrified; she has worked hard all her life, and her reward is to lose her share of the family home..? The island’s grazing wildlife - forester kangaroos and Cape Barron geese - are also struggling to find food, and the geese return to the mainland in search of greener pastures. While the locals leave, the tourists arrive by the boatload. As the streams dry up the Tasmanian devils must roam further in search of fresh water, but the forest is littered with the corpses of dead animals, giving the devils a chance to scavenge.

Strange Days – Cold War Britain BBC2, 21.00
In this three-part series screening as part of BBC Two’s Cold War season, historian Dominic Sandbrook takes us back to the strange years of the Cold War in Britain. For Sandbrook, these are the years in which we were both more secure and prosperous than we had ever been, and at the same time lived every day with the very real possibility of nuclear annihilation. But in Sandbrook’s hands, this isn’t just a story of the superpower arms race, secrets and paranoia, or daring spies, real and fictional. It’s also the story of great culture, ordinary lives changed for ever and the destiny of Britain from the end of the Second World War to today and beyond. In episode one, Sandbrook brings his trademark mix of great archive and surprising storytelling to the first chilling years of the conflict, when Britain realised our democracy was facing a new totalitarian enemy: Soviet communism. Sandbrook considers how we responded to this divided world in our culture, in our politics and in our society. He traces the collapse of the wartime alliance into mutual antipathy by looking at Winston Churchill’s description of the Iron Curtain and the extraordinary postwar tour of Britain by the Soviet Unions’s top football team, Moscow Dynamo.

W C choice DIY SOS: The Million Pound Build For Children in Need BBC1, 20.00
Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team embark on their most ambitious build yet, as they head to Peterborough to create a brand-new building for the BBC Children in Need-funded organisation Little Miracles. The centre that supports children with disabilities and life-limiting illnesses and their families is the first building to be demolished and completely rebuilt from the ground up by the DIY SOS team, making it worth almost £1million. The BBC Children in Need Special sees presenter Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS boys round up hundreds of volunteers from around the UK, including decorators, electricians, carpenters, joiners, landscapers, builders, plasterers, plumbers and engineers. It takes them just nine days to build the new centre, making this the biggest challenge that DIY SOS has ever undertaken. Little Miracles, who currently have 1,500 registered children, was gifted two and a half acres of land, housing a dilapidated building with no wheelchair access and poor facilities. With no means or funds to renovate it themselves, they welcomed the DIY SOS team’s challenge to knock down, rebuild the centre and landscape the grounds, using volunteers and donated materials.

For one night only, Professor Brian Cox explores the universe of the world’s favourite Timelord, Doctor Who. Brian takes an audience, with the help of celebrity guests, on a journey into the wonderful universe of The Doctor, in a specially recorded programme from the lecture theatre of the Royal Institution of Great Britain. Brian reveals the science behind the spectacle and explains the physics that allows Doctor Who to travel through space and time. Fun, but filled with real science, it’s a special night for Who fans as well anyone with a thirst for understanding.
George meets a woman who wants to build a shop and a mobile home out of an old horsebox, but only has £500 to spend. He meets a couple who are creating a holiday let out of a 1960s milk float. He visits an extraordinary 100-footlong balancing barn, half of which is hanging over the edge of the Sussex countryside. And George and William make plans for a rectangular pod for their tree house.

MEGA ROCK CAFE
THE Mega Bowl in Fanabe now has a new venue within its walls and is proud to present The Mega Rock Cafe. It is an American-style restaurant, offering fine food and a topclass entertainment programme. It also has an extensive cocktail menu and a reasonably-priced bar. The music you will hear is classic 80s, backed up with the original music videos of the day. The line-up of guest artistes is quite a bill to behold. Terry Ellens, a popular DJ and compere, hosts Kara-
oke nights with guest singers on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Terry has a strong
voice himself and a lovely manner with his audience, plus an extensive repertoire of songs, should he be re-
quired to sing the night away. Tomorrow (Saturday) TEAs nominees Stitch will be performing.
They’re a supremelyexperienced musical trio playing music to suit all tastes. There is collaboration between Rebecca Ferriday and Phil Francis on Tuesday evenings, which is well worth a visit. Firstly Rebecca has been working the Island’s bars as the only Amy Winehouse tribute I know of, while Phil, a band member and vocal and instrumental soloist, has been performing here for over a decade. Together, they offer a raw, acoustic sound, backed up with person-
ality and talent - definitely a highlight in the Mega Rock week. Thursday evening, alongside Terry, South African singer Arthur Darling performs songs from the Soul & Motown genre. The bar opens at 4pm daily and closes when the last person leaves. At the weekend, Mega Rock Cafe opens at 1pm and shows football and sports on three projector screens and four large TVs. Like most, they got into the swing of things for Halloween with a successful family day last week.
Back for the winter GRANT COLLINS has been spending the last few years working as a DJ between Tenerife and Ibiza. Having grown up here in Tenerife, he was living his dream of becoming a DJ from an early age. His parents were bar-owners and Grant was no stranger to the showbiz life. Before he had even
fully left school, he was given opportunities in some of the mainstream bars in town to prove his worth as a DJ. Grant rapidly grew in popularity and became one of the resident DJs in Tramps. He always strived for new experiences as a DJ and, with youth on his side and the contacts and respect
he had gained from the DJ world, he headed to Ibiza. There, he would eventually secure the position of resident DJ at the world-famous Ocean Beach. But with the season now over in Ibiza, Grant has returned to Tenerife for the winter and can be heard every night at Papagayo Beach Club,
in Las Americas, until 16th November. Grant is undoubtedly a Tenerife success story. He developed his talent here and has gone on to DJ in some amazing venues in Marbella, the Balearics and mainland Spain. It’s a pleasure to see him back in Tenerife behind the decks - doing what he does so well!
LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU WHEN a cabaret show taps into an audience and wins them over by using natural ability, it’s something special. By this I mean utilising skills other than singing as an entertainer. Most shows on the Island work alongside the phenomenon that is Karaoke, and audiences are listening to singers all night. Good or bad, it’s still singing. So, if you see an artiste who recognises that and has developed a show which offers not only fabulous vocals but throws personality, ad-lib comedy and audience participation into the mix, then
Page 36
you are probably watching The Rock DJ Tenerife. Brad Chermside arrived in Tenerife a few years ago after working the world’s holiday-resort circuit and now calls Tenerife his home. He quickly became popular with his Robbie Williams show, and he realised that audiences here crave participation and love to be involved in the shows. It is a dynamic which, if done correctly, can pay dividends as far as the relationship with the audience is concerned. When bringing people from the audience up to perform, there are many things an artiste has to
consider. Can they be controlled and not try to take over? On the other hand, they also need to be willing participants and will join in and make their part entertaining. Selection is the most important aspect of audience participation. Brad does this so well, getting the guys on stage, dressing them up like rock stars and giving them imitation guitars. They are then encouraged to do the right thing: lose their inhibitions and just act daft. It is hugely entertaining for the audience and t has proved successful
for Brad every time I have seen his act. Towards the end of the show, Brad involves the ladies and creates a girl band - with no holds barred. You should make time to seek out The Rock DJ Show in Tenerife, especially if you would like to find out what Brad does with the girls! Brad always has plenty of pictures taken of his shows by a designated photographer from the audience. And he posts them daily on his Facebook page RockDJTenerife. A master of audience participation!

Look who’s back at number one... IT’S that time of year when music shifts away from the big summer tunes and focuses on the Christmas sales bonanza.
The “hands in the air” beats from warmer climes make way for more traditional, easyon-the-ear sounds as the nights draw in. Greatest Hits CDs will be all the rage, but it’s also a good time for some old favourites and some new stars to make their mark. Eminem THE Detroit megastar has made a storming return after another of his trademark retirements. This week saw the worldwide release of his eighth album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, which is set to break records across the board. With nearly two dozen producers and guest acts, it is another ambitious project which has already started to bear fruit. The singles have all made a massive impact. Berzerk, Survival and Rap God have all gone top 10 and this week, single No4 topped the charts. A couple of years ago, Eminem teamed up with Rihanna on the classic Love The Way You Lie, which was a million seller. Their latest and fourth collaboration, The Monster, flew to the top spot in the UK just days after being released, beating off strong competition from Lordes, Fat Boy Slim and the new One Direction offering. It is Eminem’s first UK No1 since 2006 and is Rihanna’s eighth. It also gives her a piece of chart history. The Barbadian is now rubbing shoulders with Elvis and The Beatles as one of only three acts to have had seven No1s over seven consecutive years. Sia Furler AUSSIE Sia will be 38 in a few weeks, and it is safe to say that she can still walk down the street without getting
It wasn’t long before he was picked up by a Country label and eventually he made the move to Nashville. The rest is a long and successful history. mobbed. Just how is anyone’s guess because she has collaborated with the following music royalty over the last 10 years: Christina Aguilera, Eminem, David Guetta, Flo Rida, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Rihanna, Leona Lewis, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Rita Ora, Britney Spears, Jessie J and Celine Dion. A top 10 single in 2000 should have started her on the road to pop stardom, but a run of bad luck and missed opportunities blighted her chances. However, armed with a powerful, soulful voice, Sia was still in demand as a guest artist, and she has grabbed a second chance. Her vocal collaboration with Flo Rida on 2010’s Wild Ones was dynamite. The single sold 11 million units worldwide, and she then repeated the feat on Titanium with David Guetta. Elastic Heart is a storming first track from her new solo album, which is released in March, and there is now every chance that Sia will be-

come a megastar in her own right. Frank Turner THERE is a feeling that Turner is on the verge of something quite special. He’s been around for a while and he has always had a band of loyal followers. Now, it seems as though the rest of the world is waking up to his broad talents. As folk music enjoys a renais-
sance, Turner’s brand of folk/punk angst is being enjoyed by an evergrowing audience. Early albums gave him an underground base and, in the last couple of years, there is no doubt he has gone more mainstream. The autobiographical Wessex Boy gave the Winchester lad his first taste of chart success, and it has been followed by a steady string of hits. This year’s Tape Deck Heart album was given
8/10 by NME and has spawned the hits The Way I Tend To Be and new offering Oh Brother. The 1975 YOU don’t get many rock bands coming out of leafy Wilmslow, in sleepy Cheshire. It’s full of Premier League footballers and WAGS. But the foursome have had an amazing year and are set for a plethora of awards over the next few months. Debut single Chocolate, rarely off the airwaves, led to some juicy festival bookings. Reading and Leeds were particular highs, and in the summer they supported the Rolling Stones in Hyde Park! New single Girls follows The City and Sex, and in many ways it is their finest offering to date. It’s a funky, mellow tune
that would sit comfortably with late 80s bands like Wet Wet Wet or Curiosity Killed The Cat. Luke Bryan IT has taken him 15 years to become an overnight sensation. Born in Georgia, Bryan was always keen on a career in Nashville before the sudden death of his brother made the
youngster re-evaluate life. He threw himself into college studies but continued to write songs and play in local bands.

Don’t say one word! By Sue McDonald SOFA beds have been a feature of furnishings here in Tenerife since I started in the business about 24 years ago.
The reason is obvious: people from abroad buying property here wanted to maximise the occupancy and, thus, their income from being able to accommodate more people. I notice they are also becoming more popular in the UK. The sofa beds back then were a different type, though! They were mostly a pine-framed sofa, with a long mattress as the seat, which also served as a bed. And there was another version of the same thing that pulled out from underneath to make a second one. The mattresses were made of foam, which, back then, eventually used to squash down to the thickness of a wafer, and you ended up with something that wasn’t comfortable as a sofa or as a bed! Having said that, there are many of these pine sofas still in existence, and nobody can argue that the owners haven’t had their money’s worth from them! Nowadays, new technology means that the foams used for mattresses are available in different densities and combinations to best suit the use they are to
Page 38
be put to. For example, if you think about a sofa bed in which the bed mechanism pulls out to make a double bed like the one in the photo, you would want the mattress to be thick and comfortable. But don’t forget that it has to bend to go back into the sofa carcass! So choosing the right density and thickness of foam is essential. Some foams are not ideal for Tenerife, either. Latex is used a lot for beds in the UK, but I don’t sell much of it here, because your body sinks into the mattress, so it is also very hot. That’s good news in colder climes, but not so much over here! This week, we went to see a lady who owned an apartment with a sofa bed, and the tenant had complained to her about its mattress. When we got there, we were amazed it could have been slept on at all because it was a sprung version which had flattened along the bends, and there were springs all over the place! It was so bad, that we have lent the lady a foam replacement mattress until her new sofa arrives, so that her poor tenant doesn’t have to suffer any more! She will, of course, have her new sofa for her Christmas book-
ings, as the ones we sell are made here in Tenerife, and are ready in two weeks. Of course, when you are looking after a property for rental, whether on a complex, privately or for friends, checking the sofa-bed mattress isn’t something you would necessarily do on a regular basis. But it might be an idea now and again! The other change is that the design of sofas has altered so much. We offer two types of mechanism: one where you remove the seat cushions and pull the bed out from the seat, and the other where you don’t need to remove any cushions at all and pull the bed out from the back. The cushions stay in place underneath the bed, without touching the floor. In fact, you would never even know they were sofa beds Those of us who live here, or own property here, will know how many friends and relatives suddenly appear, wanting to reacquaint themselves with you when they realise you live in Tenerife. But there is no need to tell them your fabulous sofa is actually a bed and that they could have stayed with you! Don’t worry, we won’t say a word!
Twitter shares make a big noise THE micro-blogging site Twitter has made a stunning debut on the New York Stock Exchange.
The eagerly-awaited listing debuted at 26 dollars a share, which valued the company at 18 billion dollars. Experts were predicting the stock to rise, but many were left open-mouthed when the price shot up to 49 dollars in early trading. This was aided by the stock being listed on the NYSE and not the technology heavy NASDAQ exchange, like fellow online site Facebook. Twitter’s launch is the biggest technology listing since Facebook in 2012, and its stunning start is in marked contrast to that of its so-called rival. When Facebook launched, its share price
was 38 dollars and, on early trading, it jumped to 45 dollars. But swift profit-taking and dealer concerns saw it slump alarmingly. In fact, only in recent weeks has Facebook’s share price returned to those early, heady prices. And yesterday (Thursday), it was hovering at around the 48-dollar mark. Twitter currently has more than 230 million users and is yet to make a profit, despite its high share value. The 70 million shares launched in the initial float valued the company at 18bn dollars. While Twitter has made an amazing start to life on the NYSE, financial experts seem split on whether the stock has genuine, longterm potential. It lost nearly $70m in the first half of 2013, despite bringing in revenues of over $250m. Twitter is a free-to-
use service and has no plans to charge its users. Currently, 85% of its revenues come from advertising on its site - and investor will be hoping that rises. Current CEO Dick Costelo (pictured) believes the company is on the right track. He revealed recently that it is on course to bring in half-a-billion dollars for 2013, and will expand their number of customers. “We believe there is a significant opportunity to expand our user base,” he said. “Industry sources estimate that, as of 2012, there were 2.4bn Internet users and 1.2bn smartphone users, of which only 215 million are monthly active users of Twitter.” Twitter, a relatively new site, was launched in 2006. It was founded by four friends Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, Evan Williams and Noah Glass.

Old-fashioned... and much-loved! Rosemary’s just perfect for cuttings
A C AL Y P H A plants can be seen all over the Island, and you simply cannot miss them because they create such an attractive image.
That’s because they grow like wildfire and light up gardens and street verges with their wonderful coloured foliage. This ranges from autumnal shades of copper, bronze and pink, to dark-green, yellows, greens and reddish purples. Curiously, the acalypha is probably better known as an old-fashioned plant. But in reality, its attributes demonstrate just why it is a much under-rated and under-used plant. It can be used as a screening plant or a hedge if planted in a row, or even a standalone plant, growing several feet high. These plants and shrubs belong to the Euphorbiaceae family, and there are more than 400 species in the acalypha genus, ranging from ground covers to large shrubs. One such shrub is the acalypha hispida (pictured), a popular trailing plant which prob-
ably originated in the East Indies and has long, pendulous catkins of female flowers with feathery stigmas. The Inferno, also pictured, grows to about one metre and is easy to manage. And it looks truly stunning if grown in groups Others to look out for include the Acalypha godseffiana, or the Firestorm, with leaves edged in pink, which make it look so attractive. Plant them in a group for an absolutely stunning look. The newer dwarf varieties are also good for the garden, especially the Trendy and Spitfire. These grow well in the ground or even in a pot or hanging basket. Just trim them back to the size you want. One that is different is the Acalypha reptans, sometimes sold un-
8th November - 14th November 2013
der the Summer Love name. It reaches about 30cm high and each plant spreads about the same distance. Grow it in a hanging basket or try it cascading over the side of a pot or a low wall. Propagating the acalyphas is simple. Just take a tip cutting, but shorten the leaves so that they don’t transpire and breathe out moisture. And don’t be too fussy with the leaves - just trim them off. Then dip the end of the tip in a rooting compound or, dare I say it, honey or even Marmite. I know, it sounds crazy, but I am reliably informed by an Aussie pal that this works, especially if you keep the cutting moist and warm. Before long, he tells me, you’ll have a new plant. And they are absolute-
ly perfect for our climate over here. because although they love water, they can survive without it for long periods. On top of that, the acalyphas family are not prone to any diseases and are troubled by few pests. True, the large, succulent leaves are attractive to chewing insects, but they can be controlled, as can most plant pests, by spraying a mixture of sugar and water over them. The stickiness keeps the insects at bay. Alternatively, if you want to spend a good few euros, all good Tenerife garden centres can recommend a safe insecticide. The acalyphas are tropical and sub-tropical, plants, which is why they thrive here. But make sure they are sheltered from the wind. They like humus rich soil, and keep them well fed to ensure the foliage is lovely and lush. And they love to be pruned. As well as a complete fertiliser in spring, add about a 100g of sulphate of potash in spring and autumn to help bring out the foliage colour even more. The brightly coloured foliage of acalyphas gives a tropical feel to any warm-climate garden.
WITH fresh new shoots emerging on your rosemary plant, now is the perfect time to take cuttings of the herb. Early in the day, snip off shoots without flowers and pop them in a plastic bag. Seal it and keep it in a shady spot to prevent wilting until you are ready to root the cuttings. How to do it Removing leaves from stem Snip off shoots of new growth 10-15cm long. To reduce moisture loss, remove most of the lower leaves so you have a clean length of stem. Trimming stem Use sharp knife to cut off base of stem just below a leaf node - the point from which the leaves grow. Rooting powder Dip the stem ends in hormone rooting powder to speed up the rooting process. Potting cuttings Fill pots with a gritty compost mix. Insert
several rosemary cuttings around the edge, or plant individually in seed-tray modules. Watering cuttings Water-in cuttings from above to settle compost around their stems. Place pots in sheltered, shaded area, indoors in a propagator or simply cover with plastic bag to retain moisture. Checking roots After a few weeks, gently invert pots and check for signs of root development. Mist over foliage and ensure the compost stays moist. Teasing roots apart Once they have a good root system, tease cuttings apart and pot up individually into a loam-based compost. Water individual cuttings Keep plants watered and pot them on again as they get larger and the roots fill their container. They should be big enough to plant out in the following spring.

THE FINER Cutting down can DETAILS… actually lead to a
weight increase!
By Carl from Robot
BRITONS are still among the most obese in Europe, despite spending less on food and eating fewer calories.
FOLLO W I N G on from last week’s subject of face shapes, I’m now touching on those of you with slimmer faces.
Some of you may think “how lucky”, but those with this type of face can also have problems. If the style doesn’t suit them, the face can look even slimmer, making them look drawn - and it can even age them! When you have this shape, do avoid very long hair because it will drag your face down even more. Instead, opt for medium length or shorter hair. Medium length will have more body to it than longer hair. But don’t go for too much volume, though, as this will drown your face and make it look even thinner! Having your hair cut to a shorter, funkier look that’s not too cropped at the sides, and with plenty of volume and texture, will work well. Avoid neck styles being too shaved because, normally, if your face is longer. so will your neck be, too. This will stretch that area out, making it look elongated. If you are going to tie your hair back, avoid scraping into a tight ponytail. Just leave it looser and/or half-up, half-down. Any styles directed towards your face, like bobs, for example,
Page 40
will “fill out” your face shape. And try not to go for fuller fringes as these can cut your face in half, leaving you with even less of it to look at. Above all, go for neat, feminine shapes and avoid any hard or sculpted cuts. Remember, your stylists’ advice is a must. Their advice and skill will direct you in the right direction as far as
style you should go for is concerned. Never jump into a new style thinking you know best. Ask your friends and family as well because you might get told something you might not have considered. We at ROBOT never tire of giving clients advice on their hair - it’s what we are trained to do - so please ask us for a free consultation.
It’s the couch potato lifestyle that does it as a result of the recession. But, say researchers for the Institute of Fiscal Studies, a poor diet is not the only reason because a lack of physical activity is also to blame. According to a study, families have cut the cost of their food bills, spending less on fruit and vegetables and filling up with processed foods instead. The study calculated that since 1980, the amount of calories being bought by each household to eat in the home had fallen by 15-30%. Between 2005 and 2007, the average household spent £102 a month on food per adult, but this fell by nearly £8 from 2010 to 2012. Researcher Melanie Luhrmann said: “We were surprised to find that there has been a substantial decline in total calories purchased at a time when obesity has increased.
“Purchases of snack foods, soft drinks and food out have increased. However, calories purchased for consumption at home have declined strongly and account for the bulk of households’ food purchases. “This does not mean that poor diet plays no part in rising obesity. But understanding the inter-action between diet and physical activity is clearly crucial.” Kate Smith, a research economist at the thinktank, added: “Throughout the recession, households have responded to higher food prices and the squeezes on their incomes by switching to cheaper calories. “This has coincided with a fall in the nutri-
tional quality of foods purchased, with moves away from fresh fruit and vegetables and towards processed foods. “As a result, the average saturated fat and sugar content of food purchases has increased.” The researchers, who studied spending habits of 15,850 adults, calculated that the average adult eats 2g more saturated fat a day compared with eight years ago. And Government guidelines state women should eat a maximum of 20g and men no more than 30g. The World Health Organisation warned recently that one in four adult Britons is considered too fat.

Breast cancer is worse among poorest women By Val Sainsbury HUNDREDS of women from the poorest English backgrounds are dying needlessly of breast cancer.
Data presented at the National Cancer Research Institute conference showed that poverty was linked to 450 breast-cancer deaths annually. Catching the tumour late is thought to be a main reason, and the UK’s Department of Health said “much more” could be done to diagnose and treat cancer earlier. Cancer charities and researchers from Cambridge and Leicester universities urged women to see their doctor promptly. The researchers used data from 20,738 patients in the east of England, who had breast cancer diagnosed between 2006 and 2010. They looked at what stage of the cancer the tumours were being diagnosed. The data
showed that the later the diagnosis, the more advanced the tumour - and the harder it was to treat. Women from the most affluent areas were catching their tumours earlier, while he study found that if women from the socially-deprived backgrounds could match the level of diagnosis among the more affluent, 450 lives could be
saved each year in England. One researcher, Dr Gary Abel, of the University of Cambridge, told the BBC it was not entirely clear why poverty affected women’s chances of survival. “We think it’s to do with both symptom awareness among the more deprived women, what action they take once they find that there is something wrong - and
how quickly they go to their GP,” he said. “What we seem to see is that women from more affluent areas will go straight to their GP and seek help immediately. But women from more deprived areas may tend to hold back before going.” He called for a “renewed effort” to boost awareness campaigns, pointing out that
around 70% of those with breast cancer were diagnosed by their doctors and not through the national screening programme. Dr Abel added: “Clearly, this research shows that there is still work to be done and perhaps we need to move beyond just telling people what the symptoms are and encouraging people to go and see their GP as quickly as possible.” Dr Julie Sharp, of Cancer Research UK, said: “Other research shows that women from deprived backgrounds are more likely to feel embarrassed or worried about going to their GP. “But it’s important for women to take that step because going to the GP promptly could make all the difference.” “All women should be aware of how their breasts normally look and feel. We know that early diagnosis is one of the most important factors in whether breastcancer treatment is effective.” Eluned Hughes, head of public health at Breakthrough Breast
Cancer, added: “By focusing on improving early diagnosis, particularly in deprived areas, we can have most impact in stopping women dying from breast cancer. A Department of Health spokesman said: “We are spending £450 million to help diagnose cancer earlier, which will save thousands of extra lives every year. “And we are investing more than £170 million over four years to expand and introduce pioneering new methods of screening for cancer. “We are also committed to reducing inequalities in cancer care, which is why our Be Clear on Cancer campaigns are aimed at more disadvantaged groups and try to build awareness of cancer symptoms.” Previous research by Public Health England has shown a strong link between poverty and health. It has revealed that cancer, heart attacks, strokes, lung disease and liver disease are all more likely in areas of social deprivation.
Stiff upper lip can be harmful
KEEPING that typical British stiff upper lip in stressful situations could be bad for our health.
And while controlling emotions is important for well-being, it may be harmful on some occasions. Doctor Allison Troy, a psychological scientist, who believes we can adjust our emotions using “cognitive reappraisal”, says this ability to change an emotional impact can help psychological health. She adds: “For someone in a situation over which they have little control, such as a loved one’s illness, the ability to use reappraisal should be extremely helpful. “Changing emotions
may be one of the only things a person can exert control over in order to cope. “But for someone in trouble at work because of poor performance, for example, reappraisal might not be so adaptive.
8th November - 14th November 2013
“Reframing the situation to make it seem less negative may make that person less inclined to attempt to change the situation.” Dr Troy’s research team asked those who had recently experi-
enced a stressful event to measure their depression. The participants then watched sad film clips and were asked to use cognitive reappraisal to consider the situation “in a more positive light”.
The results, published in the journal Psychological Science, showed the ability to regulate sadness was linked to fewer symptoms of depression. But it worked only for people whose stress
was uncontrollable. Participants with controllable stress found that reappraisal increased depression. Dr Troy said the findings had implications for public health and for types of treatment given.

Breakfast in a right old jam Boning up on tastier meat WAITROSE is the first UK supermarket to sell bone marrow - a key ingredient for years in some of London’s top meat restaurants. It is being included in the upmarket store’s as part of its ”Forgotten Cuts” range and is acknowledged by many as enhancing meaty flavours. The upmarket supermarket chain is gradually introducing traditional and cheaper cuts of meat. Waitrose buyer Rob Hues said: “Our customers have embraced the ‘Forgotten Cuts’ rage we have introduced over the last five years. “They understand that by adopting slow cook-
Page 42
ing methods, they’ll be able to create great value meals that pack masses of flavour. “Bone marrow has been a key ingredient in top London meat restaurants such has Hawksmoor and St John’s Bread and Wine, where they both promote the nose-to-tail dining experience. “Those ‘in the know’ understand that by adding bone marrow, you can intensify meaty flavours.” The company is enlisting the help of its food ambassador, Heston Blumenthal, to put bone marrow top of the shopping lists with his latest recipe, ‘Traditional Minced Beef and Dumplings’.
BRITAIN’S traditional breakfast will be under threat if the Government allows manufacturers to sell jam without enough sugar.
But Lib-Dem MP Tessa Munt said proposed new rules meant Britain could end up with jam that was like “gloopy sludge”. She compared it with inferior European fruit spreads which, she said, often “tasted like mud”. New rules would allow jam producers to call their fruit spreads jam, even if they contain just 50% sugar. Ms Munt, parliamentary private secretary to Business Secretary Vince Cable, told MPs in a Westminster Hall debate that rules dating
back to research in the Twenties meant that jam had to be at least 60% sugar to retain its gel-like quality. Defra minister George Eustice said “one impetus” for the change was a European Union “jam directive”. He said it permitted, but did not require, a sugar level lower than 60% to be set. But Ms Munt said: “I am concerned that this debate may herald the end of the British breakfast as we know it. “Reducing permitted sugar levels from 60% to 50% would, in time, destroy the characteristic quality of British jams, jellies and marmalades, and could mislead consumers. “We all know what we expect when we go to the supermarket: something of beautiful quality with beautiful colour,
with a shelf life of about a year. “If the total sugar percentage is reduced, the characteristic gel in the consistency of jams, jellies and marmalades will be lost. “The result will be a homogenised, spreadable sludge, bearing no resemblance to the product we know and
enjoy in England as British jam.” Tory MP Priti Patel said there was no doubt Britain made the best jams in the world, telling MPs that companies should be encouraged to export the spread. But Mr Eustice said the Government was not dictating a maximum sugar-content level and, therefore, the changes would not affect producers who wanted to continue making sweet jam. He said: “One impetus behind the change was a request by some in the industry for the UK to consider taking up an optional derogation in the EU jam directive. “This permits but, crucially, does not require, a sugar level lower than 60% to be set, which is something a number of other member states have already done.”

La Taberna, the Tempting Italian THIS week, we headed to the Apolo Centre in Los Cristianos to sample the fare at one of its newest restaurants, La Taberna.
We were greeted by Marco and his staff and seated in the spacious outdoor area. Marco, owner and Head Chef, is from the Puglia area of southern Italy, and although La Taberna has been open a just a few months, he and his family have been on the Island for eight years. It is a family restaurant with fresh, homecooked food, and all products sourced at local markets or Italian delicatessens which import special ingredients from his home country. When asked why he got into the restaurant business he said: “It has been passed down over years through the generations … good food is in our blood.” And by the end of the night we certainly agreed with that profound statement! We started with a nice red wine, of which they have a full Italian range, including Chiantis and Barolos, but we went for a ripe Montepulciano D’abruzzo. We were brought warm, freshly-baked bread while awaiting our meal.
To start, we chose the Garlic Prawns in white wine, which was offered as a large portion of juicy king prawns with
8th November - 14th November 2013
olive oil, garlic, coriander and white wine. The sauce was perfect for dunking the fresh doughy bread.
We also went for the Beef Carpaccio - thin, tender slices of beef on a crisp salad - to add a bit of variation.
After we’d cleaned our starter plates, the main courses arrived. We had ordered the Grilled Salmon and the Gnocchi Sorrentina on Marco’s recommendation. The salmon was fresh and simple, grilled to perfection and topped with Lemon. And the Gnocchi Sorrentina was to die for. For those of you who have either not heard of it or never tasted it, Gnocchi is an Italian specialty - little flourand-egg dumplings, which can be served in a range of sauces. In this instance, they were covered in a Tomato and Basil sauce, topped with creamy Mozzarella and baked to a crisp in the oven. A perfect choice for vegetarians. The Fillet Steaks and Pizzas also looked mouth-watering as
they were coming past. Marco attempted to persuade us to try their special “Pizza Taberna”, but we were just too full. We did, however, manage to squeeze in a dessert to share: Panna Cotta, which is a vanilla cream pudding, with a firm texture, topped with dark chocolate sauce. Heavenly sin! Before departing, we got chatting to some other diners, Dave and Maureen, who said the Lasagna was the best on the Island! So there you go! La Taberna opens all day, from noon till midnight and, in addition to the daily special offers, residents get a 10% discount! Finally, as of December, the restaurant will be introducing live music on the outside terrace. Winter in Tenerife just got a whole lot better!

New life for crippled Jack Update on Jack Jack, the wee Yorkie from last week who was hit by a car, then thrown into a reservoir to drown, has had extensive surgery this week. He has spent more than a week with our vet, Cesar Bertoldi, who is trying to save his badlydamaged hip and back leg on the right-hand side, which appears to have taken the brunt of the collision. Pins and plates have been inserted, and Jack will eventually be like the bionic dog. We thank Cesar for again going the extra mile for one of our animals. Jack is to be adopted by one of our long-term supporters and will have a fantastic life, despite his disabilities. Such a busy October We made 17 adoptions (one to the UK), two

Be responsible - keep dogs safe IT is so important to keep your dog safe while out walking, and using a lead near a busy road is advisable. Fur and flesh definitely come off second best in a collision with metal travelling at 60kph! Not to mention what might happen to the driver if he/she swerves to miss you and hits a wall instead. Even the best-trained dogs, who have spent hours at obedience classes, will forget in the flash of a cat’s tail when they see a moggy on the other side of the road, strutting its stuff and taunting them. Also,
providing a harness and seat belt for your dog is a good way of stopping it from flying through the air, so it makes sense to buy one. Incidentally, it is against Spanish Law to leave your dog off the lead in any public place, but many owners disregard the law, or are unaware of it. While on the subject of dogs’ health and safety, here are other things you should be doing as a responsible owner: *Make sure your dog always has access to fresh water, and give him/her a balanced diet.
Accion del Sol news
*Treat your dog kindly - no hitting! *Take your pet for at least two walks a day, and try to spend some time playing with it every day. *Make sure you take your dog to the vet for its annual check-up and vaccinations. Heartworm is a really serious
illness for dogs in Tenerife, so make sure you either get the yearly injections or monthly tablets to prevent it. *Regularly grooming is so important, and check your dog’s teeth, ears and nails to spot any problems before they become serious. *Carry some plastic
doggy bags so that you can clean up after he’s done his “business”. The Accion refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological park with the windmills. We are always looking
for helpers and volunteers to take the dogs for a walk, especially on the beach. The refuge is open Monday-Friday, between 3-6pm, so pop in for a visit. And if you are considering adopting one, do visit us, or call Accion on 922 778 630.

BMW 2-Series adds up! By Jav IT could not have taken long for BMW boffins to find a name for their Series 1 replacement.
The 1,3 4 5 and 6-Series have all made their mark over the years, but what to call this new, super little coupe replacement for the 1 Series? “I know,” said top ideas’ man Barry BrightSpark with a flash of inspiration, “why don’t we call it the 2-Series?” “Brilliant idea,” proclaimed the Marketing Department. And that’s why the three-model 2-Series, so much more attractive that its predecessor, will make its public debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Prices for the new coupe start at around
£25,000 for the 228i, about £1,500 more for the 220d 2-litre diesel and around £32,000 for the M235i. The latter will reach 60mph in just 4.8secs when fitted with the eight-speed automatic gearbox, hitting a top speed of 155 mph, and return 22mpg around town and 32mpg on motorways. The 228i, meanwhile, will sound very familiar because it uses the same 2.0-litre, turbo-charged four-cylinder engine found in the 328i sedan, pumping out 240hp and 258lb-ft of torque. Like the M235i’s 332lbft, that torque is easy to get at, as it’s all available between 1,250-4,500 rpm. The 228i, equipped with an eight-speed auto (the six-speed gearstick is also available), can hit 60 in 5.4secs, with a maximum 146mph. And it’s ditto for the 220d 2-litre diesel, which can also equal that speed. 146mph. Like all recent BMWs, the 228i, 220d and M235i all benefit from the Driv-
ing Experience Control. That’s a rocker switch to the left of the shifter, which allows drivers to flick between a number of modes for the car’s suspension, throttle, transmission, steering and engine settings. But things get a little more complicated because there are different variations between the models. The 228i and 220d can be had in Sport and M Sport trims, whereas the M235i comes one
way only. With the 228i, the Sport Line consists of 18-inch wheels, ambient lighting on the interior, a blackedout grille and front fascia air intakes, as well as a blacked-out rear apron. The cabin also features a few upholstery and trim choices unique to the Sport Line. And if dynamics are more your thing, the M Sport will tick all your boxes. The suspension is re-
tuned and the car sits 10mm lower to the ground, riding on a set of unique, lightweight, 18-inch alloy wheels. An aero kit adds some aggression and some function to the car’s exterior, while a special version of BMW’s kidney grille has been fitted. Sports seats occupy the cabin, along with a range of M Sport-only dash trims.. Also, as optional extras on the 228i, cus-
tomers can choose from Variable Sport Steering, an M Sport Braking System and an Adaptive M suspension BMW will not offer a standard 235i but confine it to the M235i only. But since the 228i now boasts an additional 10hp and 58lb-ft versus its predecessor, and can be had with the optional M goodies mentioned, there’s no real need for something between it, the 220d and the topend M235i.
Honda goes Urban… and all that Jazz HONDA will showcase their small Urban SUV Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show, which starts later this month.
The Japanese manufacturer actually unveiled the concept in January at the Detroit Motor Show and plan to go ahead with the model. The Urban will be underpinned by the same platform as the nextgeneration Honda Jazz. It will give the Japanese manufacturer a suitable rival for the Nissan Juke, Peugeot 2008, Ford EcoSport and Renault Captur when it goes on sale in Europe in 2015. The concept provides strong styling cues to the new model, with an appealing blend of curves, a low roofline and a squat stance. Honda describe it as
being “dynamic and sporty, but spacious and functional”. And, like its biggest rival, the Nissan Juke, the Urban has hidden rear door handles, which help give the
8th November - 14th November 2013
model a coupe-like appearance. It is 4,300mm long 228mm shorter than the CR-V - and will slot in beneath the bigseller in the company’s line-up.
Mike Accavitti, Marketing Vice-President for Honda US said: “This is a very fair representation of the production vehicle. Honda has a history of doing concepts that are very
close.” He shrugged off suggestions that the company were late to the market with the Urban SUV, which will wear a new badge when it hits the production line.
“I don’t think we are late at all,” he said. “The CR-V is such a strong product, and when we first launched it was considered compact. Now, this will slide in below it.” As the Jazz, it will probably use the same engine line-up and feature Honda’s fuelefficient Earth Dreams units, including the Civic’s 1.6-litre diesel. That will mean emissions of well under 100g/km. Inside, the Urban is likely to use the same Magic Seats as found in the Jazz supermini, meaning a variety of different seating positions will be possible. The production car will go on sale in Japan before the end of the year, followed by North America in 2014 and then Europe. The US model will be built at Honda’s newest North American plant, in Mexico.

Life’s such a drag, but charity is in the pink!
EVEN before the fourth annual Our Place Pink Day got underway on Sunday, hundreds of euros had already been raised. And hopes were high with everyone that we could better last year’s 3,600-euro total. More on that subject later! First came the Our Place darts teams, who raised just under 200 euros, and then followed the drag show with Betty and Doris, aka Rick and Kev. They did their shopping in new-look Mercadona on Saturday, dressed in drag, and got some pretty funny looks. But who cares because they raised a huge 500 euros! Then came the big day and thanks must go to all the volunteers who helped dress the bar before the onslaught of hundreds, who turned up to support Pink Day. People were already taking their seats for a day and night full of entertainment and surprises well before the allotted noon start time. The day had everything; a tombola stall, Geraldine’s almost-
Page 46
famous auction, which included a week’s hotel accommodation here in Tenerife, meals for two from some of our finest restaurants, plus make-up and jewellery to name just a few lots. There was also a nailart stall, a cake stall and yes, Mark’s famous
BBQ all contributing towards the staggering sum of over 5,000 euros – and as we go to press we’re still counting! The entertainment, organised by Aidy Evans, included some of Tenerife finest: Scott Whitley, Gordon King and Cy Benson, Jacqui
Peters, Ken Sharratt, Kracker, Johnny Cash, Gordon Slayney, Steve Delsey, Storm Duo, Stephen Tyler; Mickey Glamz, Martin McCall and Keith George Everyone there had a superb time and, more importantly, helped raise a staggering
amount of euros. So thank you all so much. Finally, many congratulations to Cindy Westminster for again organising a fantastic day. Thanks to her mighty effort, a record total was achieved, raising a fortune for Breast Can-
cer Awareness month, to be shared between St Catherine’s Hospice and the Amate charity. Lucinda, overwhelmed at the Pink Day success, recorded on Facebook: “Firstly I would like to thank all my Playgirls for their tireless help, plus Gina, Jacqui Bryan, Anne Watson and her lovely friend Theresa Bradley for her cakes, Geraldine Wilson Dina for her bullying, Rick and Kevin for their adventures as women, Dawn Russell and Alan Watson for the tombola (I didn’t have time to give out all the medals but you have one each). “Thanks also to Kar Dawson, who became our photographer, Shar Pile for just being her, Mark James ‘King of the bbq’, plus Nuala Robinson in Scooters Bar and her crowd for everything they did - loved the teddy. “And, of course, Aidy and all the amazing singers who gave up their time to sing for us. “And thank you to everyone who came along. What a lovely crowd of people, and not even the rain stopped the merry-making. “It makes me so proud the way everyone pulled together. You really are all super.”

Bold Alvaro deserves it!
ALVARO CERVERA was grinning like a Cheshire Cat when he arrived back in Santa Cruz with his men late on Sunday night.
A few hours earlier, he had seen his side produce their performance of the season to snatch a deserved point from deflated rivals. This match was all about bottle and character. Just like the manager. He was brave, bold and, ultimately, correct. Cervera again made some surprising changes to the side who did so well in defeating Deportivo La Coruña the previous week. He shook up the system and went with three holding midfielders in front of the same back four. Ricardo and Oscar were given shock call-ups, and there was no place for Suso, who was Man of the Match last time out. The changes didn’t affect the players as Ten-
Tenerife dusted themselves down and went at Alaves, who stuck every man behind the ball. Parking The Bus is the term. While there was no real clear chances, Tenerife were on top. Well, until they were dealt another slice of bad luck. From a corner, the ball slipped to Beobide, who appeared to handle the ball into his path. His shot was always going in and, protest as they may, Tenerife were never getting it chalked off. Referee Francisco Arias didn’t have a clear
erife bossed the early exchanges. Alaves were playing like the away team and couldn’t believe their luck when they were given the lead. Tenerife had plenty of cover as Viguera lined up a shot from 25 yards. He aimed for the bottom right-hand corner and Roberto was on his way to cover the shot, only for the ball to take a wicked deflection off Carlos Ruiz. Roberto had no chance as the ball nestled in the left-hand corner. It was flukey and hard to take.

view - but he would an hour later. More on that shortly. At 2-0, Alaves fans were noisy and cheerful. The Tenerife players were stunned and when they went in at the break, they were all shaking their heads and throwing comments at the ref. Cervera didn’t hang about. He hooked the awful Oscar and brought on Cristo Martin. The change nearly brought instant reward. Only Cristo knows how he missed an open goal from 12 yards after some good play between Ayoze and Aridane. In fact, the miss seemed to spur Tenerife on. The strikers (can I label them Double A?) were linking up well and the defence was nervy. Twice, Ayoze showed his pace and Alaves dropped deeper and deeper. Aridane was also on a mission. He had his best game in months as he finally put a shift in. He even tracked back and made a defensive tackle in his own box! With Tenerife on top, it was only a matter of time before they scored, and Ayoze duly reduced the deficit on 56 minutes after Ruiz had flicked on a corner. It was game-on, but young keeper Roberto was showing his inexperience. He started flapping for corners and after 67 minutes he nearly cost Tenerife the match.
A regulation throughball saw him fly out of his box, miss the ball and then cynically hack down Viguera inches from the penalty line. He was shown a yellow when other refs could have gone red. Wise old owls Camara and Ruiz would spend the rest of the match in his ear. I’m sure all fans were wondering what Sergio Aragoneses made of it all in his family home in Santa Cruz? The club captain and veteran keeper must surely be in Cervera’s mind for this weekend. Try as they may, Tenerife couldn’t eke out that killer chance. Luismi and Chechu were thrown on, with Suso, bizarrely kicking his heels on the bench. Alaves were looking dangerous on the counter and then, deep into “Fergie” time, Tenerife got their reward. A cross into the box was heading towards Luismi but Ortiz’s crude challenge sent the Tenerife man flying. It was a shocking mistake and, with Arias just yards away, there was only one outcome. He pointed to the spot, Luismi dusted himself down and, rather cheekily, dinked the penalty over the diving Goitia. The Alaves players were crestfallen but, deep down, they knew that justice had been served. The point doesn’t take Tenerife out of the drop zone, but they are very much alive and kicking
and could climb as high as 15th if they can keep the run going and beat Eibar on Sunday. The feel-good factor is certainly sweeping the club. Well, it was until Wednesday. As I wrote in this column in September, Real Madrid have been watching Ayoze. They have scouted him during every match and, with Tenerife trying to tie him down to a proper contract, they have swooped. It is understood that Real have offered a million euros up front with a variety of add-on clauses. He would move in January and lead the line for Castilla, who are rock-bottom of Segunda division. The move makes a lot of sense for the player, but not for Tenerife! One million euros is chump change in the modern era. It really is nothing. Five million would be a closer price for a player who is being watched by lots of top teams. When you owe 23 million, one is not going to change much. I would want five million, no move until next season, add-ons and a couple of players on loan. Santa Cruz born Omar Mascarell for starters! But there is only one Real Madrid and it’s a matter of when, not if, Ayoze leaves. Let’s just hope the board get the right deal. Maybe Daniel Levy can negotiate on our behalf?

Sun sets on the Army!
THE John Lowe team handicap competition produced the usual thrills, spills and upsets. And of the 16 ties played, nine ended in 4-3 scorelines.
The big upset came at Target Bar as visiting Division 2 side Tenerife Sun put their handicap advantage to good use to beat Premier League stalwarts Target Army 6-1. The Silencio team are surely strong favourites to lift the tro-
phy now. A cracking match unfolded in Los Abrigos as La Caña Pirates entertained Bar 180 C. Ricky hit a 180 and Dai checked out on 106 for the Pirates, and the match went right down to the wire, literally! At three sets each and 1-1 in the final set, both teams ended up on double 1. Try as they might, Bar 180 could not get it, and the Pirates lived to fight another day. A 5-2 win for Palms Sports bar at Phoenix bar might not have had the drama of the

La Caña match, but it had everything else. From 996, Bubbles hit a stunning 30-dart leg to beat Tom, while Mitch suffered a rare defeat against an in-form Daniel. At 3-2 down, Phoenix had no room for error. But their hopes were dashed when Mally stepped up and checked out a brilliant 153 to seal victory for Palms. No fewer than six maximums came during the match: two from Mitch, two from Graham, and one each from Harry and Bubbles.
Luc was also on the maximum trail as Rood squeaked a 4-3 win over Phoenix Flights, and Bar 180 D turned up at Naughty Nautas with four players and won 5-2. Bar 180 B also played with just four players and also beat loftier opposition in the shape of Gaffers A. More giant-killing acts came for Pas O Nadas over Barracuda Bytes, Sundowners at Trap Door, La Caña Lancers at Amistad 1, Gaffers B at Ourplace Playboys and The Rebels at Marilyns.

Nadal reclaims his crown RAFAEL NADAL will finish 2013 as the world’s No1 tennis player – to his astonishment. A year ago, as the top eight players were contesting the ATP World Tour Finals in London, Nadal was stuck at his Mallorcan home pondering his future. A serious knee injury, which had hampered him for years, was threatening to end his entire career at the age of 26. But his two-set victory over Stanislas Wawrin-
ka in this year’s World Finals on Wednesday ensured he would be reigning supreme again. He snatched the top ranking from Novak Djokovic a month ago in China, ending the Serb’s reign of 101 weeks, and has maintained his grip on it. The Spaniard made his comeback in February with a miserable (by his lofty standards) No5 ranking following his seven-month absence. Since then, he has accumulated 10 titles and

reached 13 finals - before yesterday’s semifinal in London.
Two early exits from Wimbledon, this year’s paving the way for An-
drew Murray’s sensational victory, cast yet another shadow over his
comeback. But Nadal is as gusty as they come and refused to bow, winning in Paris, taking the US Open and triumphing in five ATP World Tour Masters. “After all that happened last year, I felt I deserved to be there at the top at the end of the season,” he said. “It is one of the best things I have done in my career - come back to No1 after three seasons. “That’s very difficult in our sport –and after a very awkward injury.”

through the gears. Phoenix Knights are on a real run, returning from Chayofa with another three points. Treehouse A made a match of it but just came up short. In Los Abrigos, Phoenix Potters hosted Palms A in a fixture that has had some spice recently. Mark was in top form for the visitors as they grabbed a draw from the jaws of victory. But the night will be remembered not for the brilliant Pie, Chips and Mushy Peas, but the finishing of one man. The table doesn’t lie, and it’s a real achievement for the champions, Tenerife Hammers A, to still be 100%. They were never in trouble at Toscales A who are rooted to the bottom. Or lack of it. The second? Well, you really had to be there. La Caña A secured an important win at home to Inn The Pink A, while Exiles A are flying high in fifth after sneaking past Peacocks 7-5. James Place have a healthy lead at the top of Division Two after another big win. Tenerife Pool Tables were dispatched 9-3 and they have a nice advantage after second-place Inn The Pink B were held to a draw at Exiles B. In fact there were three other draws in a night of tight matches.
Picasso’s A got a fine point at home to Terrace B, Hoppys couldn’t shake off Gaffers C and in the Los Cristianos derby Dreamers B matched Bluebell B. Bar 13 won again. Squid was their hero for the second week as they left it late at Bluebell A, while Palms B were too strong for La Caña B, bringing home the bacon 10-2. In a rare Wednesdaynight match Toscales B were delighted to win 8-4 at Treehouse B. The latest Division One player standings are out, with Hammers A unsurprisingly dominating.

It’s fantasy football – but for real! OASIS FM’S Fantasy Football League is now starting to shape up nicely. This is an opportunity for the armchair fan to play at being a manager, armed with a budget of 100m euros. Teams have been picked, players transferred in and out - and now, pride is at stake. The idea of the league is that each player with-
Page 54
in a team scores points every week, these are awarded for goals, clean-sheets, minutes played etc, so the league will be won by the team scoring the most points. There is already a large gap opening up between the top of the league and the bottom. The leading score now is 633 points, with the team in the bottom spot on 222. It is just a bit of fun
but, as with anything, there are always those managers who are more competitive. The league consists of 75 teams and features men, women, children and a real mix of nationalities. Currently out in front is Jeff Hall, with his Summerland Saints team. But keep looking over your shoulder, Jeff, because there are
plenty of teams looking to catch you. Mine included! This week’s manager of the week is Steve Schofield with an excellent 95 points!

Premier League Preview Chelsea must Bag a vital win By Adi Benson WE are now 10 games into the Barclay’s Premier League 2013/14 season and it is shaping up to be one of the closest we have seen in recent years.
Although it is still too early to predict the eventual winners, Arsenal have set their stall out early and are five points clear at the top. But this weekend sees a test of their credentials at Old Trafford. Here’s how the weekend games shape up: Chelsea v West Brom The home side will be looking to bounce back from their shock defeat at Newcastle last weekend. Jose Mourinho said he made “11 mistakes”, and everybody assumes he was talking about the players he picked. So can we expect wholesale changes? I am not sure. West Brom will be looking to push on after getting three points last week against Crystal Palace, although this will prove a sterner test. Baggies boss Steve Clarke worked at Chelsea under Mourinho. Will this help in any way? My prediction: Home win Aston Villa v Cardiff It seems as though it has been three years since Aston Villa last scored in the Premier League, which must be worrying for Paul Lambert. He did a great job last season keeping them up, and he has now had time to bring in his own players. But they are still at the wrong end of the table, just three points above the relegation places. So this is a good opportunity in front of their own fans to try to get some points on the board. Cardiff will be buoyant after their win against rivals Swansea and you can bet they are rel-
ishing this weekend’s game. Mind you, with unpredictable club owner Mr Tan, they may have a new name or different colour kit come tomorrow! My prediction: Away win Crystal Palace v Everton Palace are still managerless after Ian Holloway stepped down. He bought a lot of players to the club in the summer, but it appears that he forgot to buy defenders. With just three points this season, the club’s owner has already admitted he is preparing for Championship football next season. Palace need to start winning games and this weekend presents them with a good chance. Everton have started strongly, which is something I didn’t predict, and they gained a credible point last weekend against Spurs. Roberto Martinez has valuable Premier League experience and, so far, he has got the team playing well and getting results. They will be expecting three points. My prediction: Home win Liverpool v Fulham Removing my redcoloured glasses for a minute, I am surprised Liverpool have started so well, but they were found out against Arsenal. Manager Brendan Rodgers got his tactics and team selection

wrong, so he needs to put that right at home tomorrow. In Suarez and Sturridge, they have two great goalscorers but for me they are weak at the back, with the exception of Kolo Toure, who looks rejuvenated this season. They can also be too reliant on the counterattacking game. Fulham are a club in turmoil, and really need to start playing to their potential. Martin Jol has an old team and it is starting to show, with results going against them. I like him as a manager, but sometimes you can take a club so far and no further - and maybe it has come to that time. But is there anybody better out there? My prediction: Home win Southampton v Hull Southampton are the surprise package so far this season and have started really strongly. Their style of football is easy on the eye and is proving to be effective. They have made some strong buys and the team, who look as though they enjoy playing together, are brimming with confidence. A tough game last week away at Stoke saw them pick up a point, and they can expect a similar type of game tomorrow. Hull have also started the season nicely and sit in mid-table with a decent points haul. As you would expect, they are up for a fight
and they fear no one and so far, it’s working. It will be interesting to see how they cope with a technical side like Southampton. My prediction: Draw Norwich v West Ham Chris Hughton has a job on his hands, getting his players’ heads up after last week’s drubbing by Man City. At times last season they played good football, but they were still involved in the relegation dogfight and just managed to stay up. Many expected them to kick on this year, but that has not been the case and they find themselves in the relegation zone. West Ham have flattered to deceive this season, and Big Sam seems to have invented a whole new tactic by not playing strikers! They have picked points up here and there, but how many more would they have if Andy Carroll were fit? Hammers are just two points off the relegation zone and need to start climbing the table quickly. After all, the Olympic Stadium will take some filling in the Championship! My prediction: Home win Spurs v Newcastle After a summer spending the Gareth Bale money, Spurs are lacking goals this season, with Soldado looking more like a Championship striker than a Premier League star.
Jermaine Defoe must be wondering what he has to do to get a game, he is a proven goalscorer, yet he keeps being ignored by AVB. If Spurs really do have top-four ambitions, they need to start scoring or they will keep dropping points, like the two last weekend at Everton. Newcastle will have had a smile on their faces all week after taking three points off Chelsea last time out. But can they repeat that form away from home? They have some good attacking players but can be disjointed at times; you never know which team are going to turn up. But there is nothing like confidence to improve a team’s performance and they will go into this game believing they can get the win. My prediction: Draw Sunderland v Man City Somebody at Sunderland must have run over a priest! If it were not for bad luck, they would have none. Buoyed by a win against arch-rivals Newcastle, they went into the game last week against Hull brimming with confidence, then came crashing down to earth in just 20 minutes with an own-goal, an injured keeper and two red cards before halftime. Although they put up a spirited second-half performance, it wasn’t enough. Maybe they could ask to be allowed 12 players on the pitch this week - for starters, anyway! Man City couldn’t have had a better week: seven goals against Norwich last week and then four against CSKA Moscow on Tuesday, ensuring they qualified for the next stage of the Champions League for the first time. The players will be chomping at the bit to get back on the pitch, and Sunderland will have a task on their hands keeping them quiet. Expect goals, and plenty of them! My prediction: Away win Swansea v Stoke
Swansea have not had the best start to the season and, if anything, they seem a little tired. But they will be looking forward to this game, and the opportunity to put the loss against big rivals Cardiff behind them. There is no doubt that Michael Laudrup has got them playing good football. But that good football needs to start winning games for them and, as yet, it is not really working. I don’t believe their fans need worry about a relegation battle, but Swansea do need to pull their socks up and get on with it. Stoke look a different team under Mark Hughes. They are more prepared to play football and pass the ball, yet they are not picking up points. They are just one place above the relegation places, and it doesn’t help when your goalkeeper is joint top-scorer! They need to get back to defending and being as difficult to beat as they were in the past, which should see them safe. My prediction: Home win Man Utd v Arsenal Who would have thought Man Utd would be eight points behind Arsenal after 10 games? But that is the position they find themselves in, and it’s another big test for David Moyes. It will tell us a lot about United’s own title ambitions, and a win will give them a big confidence boost and the opportunity to kick on. Lose and they are 11 points behind - and surely their title is lost. Arsenal have started the season at a sprint, Liverpool, supposedly, offered their first test, which they passed with flying colours, so they will feel confident going into this game. They know what is at stake, and I feel they have a stronger midfield than United, which is where the battle will be won or lost. My prediction: Draw
