NO HIDING PLACE FOR CRIMINALS... IT’S that time of year again when criminals on the run start having nightmares. Independent UK crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers and the National Crime Agency (NCA) are again on the hunt for Britain’s most wanted. Thirteen new faces, nicknamed “The Unlucky Thirteen” have been released to the public. All the men are thought to be lying low in Spain and the Canary Islands. The suspects are part of the eighth Operation Captura appeal since its launch in 2006. They are wanted for a variety
of crimes, including attempted murder, sexual offences against a child and class A drug-dealing. The ultra-successful, multi-agency campaign identifies serious criminals on the run, wanted by UK law-enforcement agencies for crimes committed there. Since its 2006 launch, it has been a constant thorn in the side of the baddies, with 53 out of 63 arrested, and many of those now behind bars. Crimestoppers and the NCA work closely with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in Madrid, and with British and Spanish law-enforcement agencies.
Information given to Crimestoppers is then followed up, and those details are passed on to the Spanish police, who process them and carry out the arrests. Lord Ashcroft, founder and Chairman of Crimestoppers, said: “The fact that we are able to again launch Operation Captura is an indication of how successful the last seven years have been since its inception. “However, despite our success so far, there are still a number of dangerous criminals who see Spain as a safe haven to hide from their past. “But with the support of the Spanish and UK
public, we can hunt them out and bring them to justice.” Hank Cole, Head of International Operations for the NCA, warned fugitives: “Spain is NOT a safe haven. The NCA and its partners have the capability to pursue you relentlessly. “Fifty-three fugitives have been caught since Captura was launched, and many more linked to other operations. T “The exceptional level of collaboration and intelligence-sharing with the Spanish authorities has been vital to many of these arrests.” He added: “The most important thing, though,
is the power of this campaign to harness the eyes and ears of the public, both here and in Spain.” The Canary Islands has harvested a large percentage of those captured over the years. Not so long ago Jonathon Lejman, from Stoke, was arrested on a beach in La Caleta. He had been part of the 2011 appeal. At the time of the arrest Dave Cording, Crimestoppers’ director of operations, told us: “Not only is the campaign successful in tracking people down in Spain, but it displaces them as well. “But as we can see, no matter where these wanted individuals
run to, law enforcement will find them. “I hope this further reinforces this message to fugitives: ‘You can run, but you can’t hide forever’.” If you spot one of the wanted men, or you know of his whereabouts, you are urged to use the special freephone number 900 555 111, which will be answered in the UK by Crimestoppers’ call agents - and a translation service is available upon request. People can also pass on information anonymously via the Crimestoppers number 0800 555 111, or online at www. crimestoppers-uk.org.

Devastation and despair! Deadly typhoon destroys the Philippines, with 2,000 dead THE utter devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines this week has left the area looking like a war zone.
That was the view of some survivors among the millions who escaped Monday’s fearful storms but have been rendered homeless and starving. And pictures of the appalling damage to the islands support their feelings. Initially, the Philippines government believed the death toll could be as many as 15,000 people. But this figure was amended to 2,000 as reports from the disaster areas became clearer. Another eight people were crushed to death on Wednesday in Tacloban city when a wall collapsed as looters helped themselves to more than 30,000 bags of rice, each weighing 110lbs, from a government warehouse. The mayor of typhoonravaged Tacloban even urged residents to flee, saying local authorities couldn’t get help to everyone. With roads virtually impassable because of all the rubble, supplies of food are being hampered, and survivors
Page 4
are getting increasingly desperate for food, water and medicine. There have been reports of gun battles between security forces and mobs of looters, and water pipes have been dug up by people desperate for clean supplies. The UK’s first aid flight arrived on Wednesday as part of the international rescue operation. In addition, a team of British medical experts, and an RAF transport aircraft, should have reached the islands now, while a Royal Navy warship is on its way. British holiday-makers
and expats in the Philippines have joined in the huge international rescue operation as winds of up to 235mph battered the Pacific Ocean islands. And Brits at home have rallied to the cause, as they always do in times of disaster, with £26m pledged already Television personalities Kirsty Young and Myleene Class, whose mother is from the Philippines - and she still has family there - helped launch a fundraising drive for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), which has seen millions
pouring in by the hour from on-line, text and phone donations. The Queen, who made an undisclosed donation to swell the funds, also sent a message of condolence to Philippines President Benigno Aquino, saying she had been “deeply saddened to hear of the loss of life and devastation caused by the typhoon”. Her Majesty added: “Prince Philip joins me in offering our heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families at this difficult time.” The UK Government
has also pledged £10m and has matched the first £5m raised by the public. Another vital, helping hand is offered by Fred. Olsen. The cruise-line company is taking urgent action to support its Filipino crew members, who have been affected by the typhoon’s terrible impact. The majority of crew aboard its four cruise ships are from the Philippines, and many have family and friends who have been affected, Fred. Olsen is facilitating the return home of a number of staff from the most
devastated areas in the Philippines. It is also sending a sizeable donation to its crewing agent in the region, Bahia Shipping, to distribute to families in urgent need of help. The Philippines Government believes it will take up to £200m to restore the islands following the devastation, and every little bit helps! Yesterday (Thursday) the major of Santa Cruz, Jose Bermudez, met with the leader of the Community Association of Filipinos in Tenerife Francisca Yacap Pepito. He offered Pepito support and any help that was required for the 500 Philippine people who live in Tenerife. He said: “Santa Cruz will work and help with all necessary matters to hold some kind of charity event, regardless of where it takes place, because we understand the importance of these actions and the help their society needs. We have been in contact with the Red Cross to help them with the aid collection process.” Donations can be made online at www.dec.org. uk – and a £5 donation can also be made by texting SUPPORT to 70000.

Suspect thieves carried a fortune JEWELLERY and cash amounting to nearly 500,000 euros was recovered by police from two men suspected of a spate of robberies in the Adeje area. The bounty included luxury watches and wads of mixed money, comprising £3,000, over 11.000 euros and 35,000 roubles. The men, aged 53 and 43, were held by Las Américas’ National Police, who believed they were responsible for 25 breakins. Operación Gorka Nahiel was launched by police after several robberies were reported by home-owners and hotel guests. One of the men is also suspected of being involved in a racket concerning the import of stolen, top-of-the-range vehicles for re-sale on the Island and in Gran Canaria.
Paragliding tragedy as Brit has ‘heart attack’ A 53-YEAR-OLD British woman, who died on Tuesday while paragliding over Adeje, is believed to have had a heart attack in mid-air.
Experienced flier Carolyn Dewdney, from Cheltenham in Gloucester, plummeted to the ground in a mountainous area, yet had few visual injuries. Henry Willder, whose company Para42, organised her planned weeklong trip, said: “We don’t know for sure yet, but it is believed she suffered a heart attack while flying and died. “That’s what the forensic doctor who attended the scene told us, but until the complete autopsy takes place, we won’t know anything more.” Mrs Dewdney was in a group of six fliers, including her husband, Nigel, and Mr Willder,
when she fell at around midday. The group were more than an hour into their flight when Mrs Dewdney, who reportedly worked as a nurse at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, started struggling. “Immediately, when I saw she was in trouble, I radioed to our ground crew to call for an air ambulance,” said Mr Willder. A helicopter was scrambled, but the

tragic woman was already dead by the time the crew reached her. The rest of group landed about a mile away from the spot. The forensic doctor who examined her at the scene said she had suffered slight injuries only, including a broken arm. Mr Dewdney took part in the 2010 Paragliding World Cup and is chairman of Malvern Hang Gliding Club, based in Worcestershire.

Standing room only at unknown hero’s funeral Tenerife stunner is edged out for Miss Universe title GRANADILLA beauty Patricia Rodríguez was pipped by her pal, Gabriela Isler, for the Miss Universe crown on Saturday in Moscow.
Gabriela, representing Venezuela, took the title in a close-run contest, watched by an estimated one billion people from 190 countries. The pair were regarded as hot favourites going into the final, and they even roomed together in the days leading up to the spectacle. Gabriela beat our own Miss Spain and contestants from 84 other countries at the 62nd annual competition to collect the country’s seventh Miss Universe title. The 25-year-old, 5ft 10in stunner works
as an anchor for Venezuela’s Venevision TV, and her experience will come in handy during her one-year stint as the world’s most beautiful woman. She will tour the globe during her reign, taking part in charity events, and will have a New York base.. The new Miss Universe also received a cash prize of £157,500 and, during official engagements, will wear a crown of gold and platinum encrusted with 1,371 gems, valued at more than £75,600. Patricia, who was Miss Spain in 2008, was among the five finalists, along with girls representing Ecuador, Brazil, the Philippines. But the jury, chaired by Aerosmith rocker Steven Tyler, went for the Venezuelan.
AN incredible 2,000 people turned up to salute a World War II veteran, who was part of the Dambusters’ operation.
Harold Percival died with no close relatives or friends. And when his funeral service was advertised in a local, Lancashire newspaper, it sparked an internet appeal for mourners, which turned into an avalanche.
Harold, 99, who died last month in a nursing home, never married and had no children. He outlived his siblings and was described as “a solitary man”. He served during the Second World War with RAF Bomber Command and worked as ground crew for the famed Dambuster Squadron, which played a big part in the defeat of Germany. After the war, he left the RAF and was said to have led a nomadic lifestyle. The chapel at Lytham
Park Crematorium was packed for his funeral, and hundreds more stood outside in the rain. Funeral director Dawn Whitehead-Brown said: “It is humbling and heart-warming to see so many people who never knew this man turn up here to pay their respects. “We had no idea what kind of response we would get when we put the ad in the paper - but to see this turnout is unbelievable.” Many serving and former servicemen and
women attended the funeral, which was held on Armistice Day. It began with a twominute silence, heralded by a bugler sounding The Last Post at 11am. Mr Percival’s nephew, Andrew Collier-Worsell, described the public response as “outstanding”, and added: “It is remarkable to see so many people turn up. Strangers - people who never knew him in his life. “If he’d known, I think he’d have been sheltering around the corner, hiding from it all.”
Las Galletas man on murder charge A 29-YEAR-OLD Las Galletas man has been remanded in custody, accused of murdering his girlfriend’s former husband. Page 6
He was arrested last Thursday night by the Guardia Civil after they had been alerted by two off-duty National policemen. The officers found a man’s body inside a vehicle in a parking lot in a residential area
of Costa del Silencio. The 45-year-old victim, who had lost a lot of blood, had a stab wound on the left side of his body. Initial enquiries led to the suspect, who is said to have claimed selfdefence during a strug-
gle, when the victim attempted to force his way into the woman’s home. The suspect handed over the knife, allegedly used in the attack, which had been washed and put away in a drawer.

A rock-fall escape by car couple
News
Transport strike off! TENERIFE Cabildo has averted a proposed strike by coach drivers, just hours before their planned walk-out.
A ROCKFALL on the TF-1 exit to Parque de la Reina on Monday afternoon almost had serious consequences. Only the actions of a quick-thinking driver, who averted a dreadful accident by swerving out of harm’s way, saved him and his passenger by a whisker. Fortunately, the car bore all the damage
from the tumbling rockface, and the occupants were left to reflect on their lucky escape. The collapse blocked the road, and caused long tailbacks on the motorway, and drivers were still experiencing delays yesterday (Thursday). It’s unclear when the junction will be reopened.
15th November - 21st November 2013
At the start of the week, the Island faced travel chaos as both coach and taxi drivers voted for strike action for today (Friday). The ‘Tourist Transport’ strike would have paralysed Tenerife’s tourism infrastructure on its busiest day. On Wednesday, leaders of the taxi drivers unions and co-operatives met to ratify the action. Thankfully, common sense prevailed after assurances from Government officials.
They have promised to look into the “illegal” taxi problem at the airports, and find a solution to the dispute between taxi companies and hotels or courtesy transport. Some cynics believe the postponement was made only when taxi drivers realised how much they would lose. But supporters have pointed out that the cabbies’ will was strong - and they were prepared for the shortterm pain.
The “coach” strike is a little more complicated. The new agreement sees a renewal of the original deal between the Cabildo and the unions, while also agreeing to look again at how a new understanding can be reached to better serve the tourism markets. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said: “I’d like to thank everyone involved in making the talks a success. “It’s great that the negotiating efforts of both parties to reach a
stable agreement, which consolidates Tenerife as a destination for quality and safety, has been achieved.” Alonso also considers that this agreement safeguards the general interests of the Island, and guarantees to provide such an important service for tourism. “This is good news for Tenerife and the world of tourism,” added the President. It is the first eyecatching success achieved by the new Cabildo chief, and it will give him a much-needed boost. It is vital for Presidents to be able to broker deals. And to avert two strikes at the last minute, in the same week, is quite a feat!

Fresh faces, fresh outlook IT’S still six weeks to Christmas, but the Canarian Weekly is in a giving mood.
Over the coming weeks you will notice a few changes as we keep the paper fresh and vibrant. We have already extended the popular food and entertainment sections, and this week we welcome some new and not-so new columnists. It’s a pleasure to have Joe Ferguson back on board, and I’m sure you will enjoy his weekly column. Joe has a unique slant on the world - and if you thought he was controversial before, just you wait and see what a year in the cold has done for him. By popular demand, I’m delighted to welcome back Marianno and his legal column. Spanish law is different from British law, which is different from European Law. I believe all of us residents could do with a helping hand from time to time, and Marianno will cut through all the legalese of the law system. Last, but by no means least, we unveil our new fashion columnist, Ruth Benson. Her successful London Look store recently expanded into downtown LA and the
store is a real gem. There is something for everyone and fashion to suit all budgets. She will look at ladies and men’s fashion, while casting an eye on the everchanging world trends. Next week, we introduce more columnists as we move the Canarian Weekly forward into the new year. And, as we enter the final few weeks of 2013, our minds naturally look back on the events of the last year. While a full review is another month away, I must confess I cannot remember a harder year for our community. The obvious financial problems aside, it has been a tough year, with so many “elders” moving on and some social

pillars suffering setbacks. Without a word of a lie, I would not be writing this column as editor were it not for the colossal help and support I have had from Sandie Laming-Powell. For many years, she was a source of inspiration and guidance as this young pup earned his spurs. The advice was priceless, honest and heartfelt. The success Sandie had with The Paper all those years ago helped spawn publications like Canarian Weekly. I cannot stress how well we have it in 2013 compared with 20 years ago. At times, I feel us expats take for granted quite how many things are “just like home”. Sandie would support every charity event, and now it’s time for us to give a little back. As you will read in Jamie Drew’s column, Sandie’s husband Steve is seriously ill. He is one of the nicest blokes I have ever met and is as honest as the day is long. I’m proud to call him a friend. If you can make it to the Drunken Duck on Sunday, you will be supporting one of the good guys - and I hope to see you there. Steve’s afternoon is not the only charity occasion this week. There are plenty of fund-raisers in aid of the Philippines Typhoon appeal, there are events for Children In Need, plus a bar crawl in Silencio for Glenn. And next Friday there is an event at Whisky Jar in aid of Leighanne Easton, aka Lilly. I find the generosity of our community amazing. Even in times of trouble and hardship, we still rally round and find a way to help others. Long may it continue.
Toronto cops break a vast child-porn ring! AS we go to print, a major story is developing in Canada concerning children.
Toronto Police say over 340 people have been arrested, and nearly 400 children rescued, in a three-year investigation into a major international child pornography ring. All eyes are on a Toronto-based firm which, allegedly, sold DVDs and streamed videos of naked boys to countries that include Germany,
Romania and Ukraine. It is understood that Azov Films marketed the footage as “naturist film” and claimed they were legal in Canada. The US Police believe the films were distributed in over 90 countries. More than 100 arrests were made in Canada, 76 in the US and the rest in other countries during the investigation, codenamed Project Spade. A 42-year-old Canadian named as Brian Way is the head of the company, and he has
been charged with 11 offences, including possession of, and import and export of, child pornography. Among the other countries involved in the investigation were Australia, Spain, Mexico, South Africa, Norway and Ireland. A police spokesman said: “Officers located hundreds of thousands of images and videos, detailing horrific sexual acts against very young children - some of the worst they have ever viewed.”
Fun Golfers pay their respects MORE than 20 Fun Golfers wore their poppies with pride as they made their way around the Los Palos course on Remembrance Sunday.
At 11am, they stopped play to observe the twominute silence tradition, and to show their respect for the Fallen.
Sean Bible & Graham Hewitt went on to clinch the tournament, with Keith Norman & Ian Paterson second and John Bentley & Maureen Flowers third. At last, the ladies had a Nearest the Pin winner in Maureen, who was matched in the gents’ contest by Ian Paterson. Harry Fleming (again) & Peter Rawson collected the Booby prize. The next Fun
competition is on Sunday, 8th December, when members face the 3-club challenge. And remember to wear something Chrismassy or Julia will fine you! Afterwards, players will head for Rancho El Palm Mar for their Christmas lunch. Anyone wishing to join the Fun Golfers should contact Clive on 922 797 640. All money raised each month goes to charity.

It’s gadgets and gizmos! ADEJE Council is sponsoring a gadget competition throughout schools in the borough
To mark the festival of San Andrés and, as part of the ongoing recycling campaign, the council is encouraging children in local schools to take part in a “cacharro” competition. A “cacharro” can be interpreted as a gadget or gizmo, which, in this instance, should be made from recycled materials - cans, boxes, etc. The competition is being co-ordinated by the council’s education department. Children can submit entries at their local schools between today (15th Nov) and the 28th. Prizes will be school materials valued at 40 euros, 25 euros and 15 euros. The feast day of San Andres, on 30th November, is traditionally celebrated here with chil-
dren making as much noise as possible, dragging along string with empty cans, or pots and pans tied together. All children currently studying in Adeje’s public schools can take part, and all the projects should be made from recycled materials. This year, one of the aims of the campaign is also to promote family participation, so parents are encouraged to help the children in primary schools as much as they like. Students in secondary schools should work individually. Initial selections will be made by teams at each of the participating schools, and a maximum of 12 finalists from each centre can go forward for selection. After the voting, all the finalists will be on display at Adeje Cultural Centre. More details and the rules of the competition can be found on the Adeje website, www. adeje.es
Terrrorist suspects face passports ban A FLAW in the law enables suspected British terrorists to retain their passports, regardless.
But under new plans backed by Home Secretary Theresa May, they would be stripped of them and rendered “stateless”. Mrs May wants to amend a clause which prevents the Government from removing UK passports in certain circumstances. She wants the power to confiscate the passport of people acting in a way “seriously prejudicial to the interests of the UK”. It follows a Supreme Court ruling, ordering Mrs May to return a UK passport to an Iraqi terror suspect accused of plotting to blow up sol-
urged a revival of the powers to relocate terror suspects to other parts of the country following Mohamed’s disappearance. He was relocated to Ipswich, Suffolk, when subject to a control order. But he returned to London when the restriction was lifted. Ms Cooper’s letter has been published ahead of a Home Affairs Select Committee session with David Anderson QC, the independent reviewer of terror legislation, and Charles Farr, directorgeneral of the Office for Security and CounterTerrorism within the Home Office. The shadow home secretary wrote: “No terror suspect under a relocation order ever managed to abscond. “Now, two terror suspects who were previ-
ously relocated and then returned because of your decision have absconded. “Your decision, against advice and warnings, to end relocations has made it much easier for two dangerous men to disappear.” Ms Cooper asks the Home Secretary to agree to re-introduce the power to relocate terror suspects and pledges “cross party” support. Ministers are reportedly reviewing the Tpims and are considering whether to stop suspects from visiting mosques suspected of preaching hardline, religious views. Last week, it emerged that Mohamed had been twice remanded in custody for allegedly breaching controls imposed on him.

diers. Judges said it was unlawful to remove the passport of Hilal al Jedda because it would have left him stateless. But a Home Office spokesperson said: “The government will take all necessary steps to protect the public, including pursuing deprivation of citizenship, where appropriate.” The proposals come after terror suspect Mohammed Ahmed Mohamed, subject to a terrorism prevention and investigation measure (Tpim), fled a London mosque disguised in a burka. Mrs May said at the time that his passport had been seized, but she was later forced to admit she was mistaken. Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper, has
called Sandy’s Safe Haven For All Animals, near Cleveland, Ohio. Alongside the 62-yearold’s body, discovered by a friend, were the dogs as well. But one had escaped by jumping out of the car and was later found by police in the garage. She had been caring for animals at the centre for more than
40 years. The website of the organisation she founded, Animal Rescue Foundation, said Ms Lertzman also looked after cats, horses, deer, racoons, squirrels, geese, ducks and other birds. A statement on the Foundation website said: “She was a pioneer in animal rescue. Her dogs were abused
dogs that no one wanted, or could not be adopted. “Blind dogs, dogs with severe disabilities, dogs who could not be socialised … all the dogs found her love and compassion. “She obviously feared that, upon her death, these abused dogs would be placed in harm’s way.”

Painting brings home the Bacon A PAINTING by Francis Bacon has smashed the world record to become the most expensive piece of artwork ever sold at auction.
Bacon’s three-piece work of his friend and fellow artist Lucian Freud went for £89 million in New York on Wednesday. The stunning price
Page 12
paid for Three Studies of Lucian Freud dwarfed the previous record-holder, the £74million paid for Edvard Munch’s The Scream in 2012. Bacon’s 1969 piece has always been considered a masterpiece, and it was the first time it had been offered at auction. Bidding opened at £50m, which drew gasps as the experts estimated it would fetch around £53m. During a frantic five-
minute bidding war, the price grew and grew until the gravel dropped at the new price of £80m, which will grow to £89m after commission fees. The auction house did not disclose the identity of the telephone buyer but there is speculation that it could be Roman Abramovich. The Chelsea Football Club owner paid nearly £43m for a previous slice of Bacon back in 2008.

The Cabildo cafe is here! IT would be unheard of in the UK, but the Tenerife Government has branched out into the restaurant business.
On Sunday, the Cabildo opened Bravo! - a cafe-bistro in the Adan Martin Auditorium in Santa Cruz. Bravo! is located in the lobby overlooking the square and the sea, and the Cabildo has roped in the big names to make sure it’s a success. Famed Spanish chef Lucas Maes, who is on board, helped to design the menu. The inauguration took place last weekend and was a roaring success. Adeje clean-up campaign set to make tidy progress A GROUP of campaigners are going door-to-door in Adeje, spreading the word about the borough’s “clean and healthy” message.
The four young local women, hired through the area’s job centres, are conveying information about the council’s new campaign on pet care and the environment to residents. Environment Councillor Esther Rivero Vargas, who is responsible for the campaign, said the women met a number of requirements. The group, all previously on the dole, were chosen because they were able to demonstrate their knack of engaging with the public. They have been hired by Ascan Torrabonaf, the company contract-
ed to keep Adeje clean, and they will spend the next six months calling on Adeje homes and discussing the campaign with householders. Apart from advocating the plus-factor of hav-
ing a cleaner town, they are passing on the latest information about the benefits of recycling, and the types of rubbish meant for each of the different-coloured containers all over the
borough. They are also discussing the duties and benefits of pet ownership. Before they began the borough-wide campaign, the quartet received training in a
number of aspects to help them impart the information in the best way possible. So far, they have reported an excellent response from residents. They began their work in Callao Salvaje where, a few weeks ago Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga held a meeting for the public and presented the information team to them. It was followed by a public meeting in Playa
Paraíso and, yesterday (Thursday), the Mayor was in Miraverde. During the next few months, all areas in the borough will host meetings, to be followed up by visits from the info team. As well as giving residents the information booklet, they will also tell them where they can download more information on the campaign in English, French and German.
Santa Cruz just a stroll in the park
SANTA CRUZ can be a nightmare for first-time visitors trying to find their way around the Tenerife capital.
But all is not lost because you can now enjoy guided tours of the city on foot, every day of the year, at no cost. A company called City
Page 14
Expert, which has been given the mantle of Tourist Information Services for Santa Cruz, has already begun the first two tours, showing the attractions of the historic city centre and the Garcia Sanabria Park. You can enjoy the walks: from Monday to Sunday at midday, meeting in the Plaza De España, or the Garcia
Sanabria Park version, which leaves from the park’s floral clock at 2pm. And it is not a longwinded slog. Both tours take about one hour and, conveniently, are offered in Spanish and English. For more details, call City Expert (922 289 536) or the Office of Tourist Development (922 299 749).

We’ll pay you to breast-feed your children Hollywood director Ron Howard has started filming the movie In The Heart Of The Sea in the Canary Islands. And he likes what he sees! Ron Howard@RealRonHoward Our 1st leg on our journey to the open ocean portion of our production for The Heart of the Sea
NEW mums are being tempted to breastfeed their babies with shopping vouchers dished out by various high street companies. The British Government have funded research by the University of Sheffield to examine ways to boost low rates of breast-feeding in parts of the UK. As a result, Matalan, John Lewis, Mothercare and some supermarkets will distribute vouchers, worth up to £120, if mothers feed their babies with breast milk until they are six weeks old, And there is a further £80 on offer if their babies are still breastfed at six months. Should the “feasibility” project prove successful, the study authors will conduct a national research programme into the scheme. But concerned midwives have warned that financial reward should not be the main motivation for women to breast-feed. The Department of Health admits to funding the project, but Health Minister Dr Dan Poulter does not believe
“financial incentives” are the best way of encouraging mothers to breast-feed. He said: “It has huge health benefits, and it helps to promote a strong bond between mum and baby. But it should be a woman’s choice to breast-feed, and not all mothers are able to. “Latest figures show nearly 74% of mums start breast-feeding, and we have seen a general increase in recent years.” The minister added: “We believe the main way to promote breastfeeding is not financial incentives, but to make sure women have all the information they need to make an informed decision.” The new study will be trialled in Derbyshire and South Yorkshire, where breast-feeding uptake rates are low. Dr Clare Relton, senior research fellow at the University of Sheffield, said that Just 34% of UK babies were breastfed at six months, with only 1% exclusively breast-fed at this stage. She stressed: “Breast milk is perfectly de-
signed for babies, and it provides all they need for the first six months of their lives. “The scheme offers vouchers to mothers who breast-feed as a way of acknowledging both the value of breastfeeding to babies, mothers and society, and the effort involved in breast-feeding.” In fact, the NHS recommends that mothers breast-feed exclusively for the first six months of a child’s life. The preliminary study will focus on up to 130 mothers who give birth between November and March. If they breast-feed their children for a full six months, they will receive shopping vouchers worth £200 - half for supermarkets and half for highstreet stores. The vouchers will be paid in five £40 instalments and the initiative is being funded by the National Prevention Research Initiative. That is a group made up of Government departments, medical charities and research companies. The initiative simply
requires the participating mother and her health visitor or midwife to sign off to say she is breast-feeding. Dr Relton said the test would not only look at whether the payment improves uptake rates, but also at whether women believe they are being “bribed or rewarded” after receiving the vouchers. Janet Fyle, professional policy adviser at the Royal College of Midwives, said: “While we are not against financial incentives for the right reasons, there is a much bigger social and cultural problem here that needs to be tackled. “In many areas, including those in this study, there are generations of women who may not have seen anyone breast-feed their baby, suggesting that it is not the cultural norm in many communities. “The motive for breastfeeding cannot be rooted by offering financial reward. “It has to be something a mother wants to do in the interest of the health and well-being of her child.”

Thumbs-up for Food Fayre
THE Arona Tourist Board was delighted with the ninth annual Canary Food Fayre in Los Cristianos last weekend.
More than 5,000 tourists and residents sampled the culinary delights of all the Canary Islands. Hundreds of different types of food, wine, cheese, desserts, breads, sauces, honey and many others products were
thoroughly enjoyed. Evelin Santos Chinea, Arona Tourist Board head, said: “It was a major success. This year we wanted to merge the traditional way of doing this event with the technology, using the new-age tools like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. “This enabled us to show the world, minute by minute, what was happening at the Fayre.” The fine weather, plus the superb range
of foods, helped draw in the crowds. Apart from the gastronomic displays, there was live entertainment throughout from a variety of local folk acts. Chinea added: “Arona’s Tourist Board will continue to pursue initiatives such as this because it is clear to see how well they are enjoyed.” For those who missed the event, there are plans to expand for next year, with a week-long show being mooted.
Luxury home-owners who wangled a council house! A MARRIED Berkshire couple in their Sixties have paid the penalty after lying about their Spanish home to claim a string of UK benefits. Michael and Sylvia Plumridge from Sonning in Wokingham, fraudulently claimed over £16,000 in UK benefits - and even fiddled
their way into a council house! They failed to declare to benefit officials that Mrs Plumridge was actually the owner of a luxury apartment in Torrevieja, in Alicante, where they both lived until moving back to England in 2010. The pair then claimed a string of benefits, including pension credit and housing and council tax benefit, while keeping details of Sylvia’s Spanish property

and her private NHS pension a secret. They even applied for and received a council property, claiming they had nowhere to live. The British Embassy, who revealed the details of their fraud, did not say how they were rumbled. But for failing to declare their true circumstances to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the Plumridges were each sentenced to a
12-month community order, with 240 hours of unpaid work. They were also ordered to pay back the benefit they had conned out of the state, and a further £1,235 to cover the investigation costs. Julie Holland, from Wokingham Borough Council’s business assurance team, helped bring the fraudsters to justice. She said: “With such a high demand for social housing, and with tax-
payers’ money being so tight, it is vitally important that we make sure council houses and public money go to those who really need it. “Every council property that goes to the wrong person costs the council taxpayers of Wokingham Borough an extra £18,000. “We will continue to go after fraudsters who think they can cheat the system and get away with it.”
Benefit fraud takes taxpayers’ money away from those who need it most. If you suspect someone of committing benefit fraud in Spain, call 900 554 440, the free and confidential fraud hotline in Spain, or fill in the form at www.dwp. gov.uk/benefit-thievesspain. Investigators will then follow up to make sure that taxpayers’ money is not going astray.

A Premier place to help all these Children in Need
THE Premier Bar, on Amarilla Golf, stages its fifth annual Children in Need fund-raiser tomorrow (Saturday). This spectacular event starts at 1pm, and, for the fifth time, the Premier has again chosen to donate the funds to local charity Helping Hands, which specialises in supporting Tenerife’s under-privileged kids. All monies collected are donated on the day to a representative from the registered charity. These special children are also invited to the Premier Bar in December for a Christmas party, where they will meet Santa Claus and receive their Christmas presents. Carol Slater, who owns the bar, said: “Seeing the children’s faces when they open their gifts brings a tear to the eye. “That’s because it is hard to believe that young children can be so delighted with the smallest of things.” It promises to be yet another huge event, with at least 16 cabaret acts donating their time to offer support. The show kicks off at
Page 18
1.30pm, with entertainment every half-hour until 9.30pm, when the auction and raffle take place. So many local businesses have supplied prizes for both, including London Look, Amarilla Car Hire and Island Distribution. Fairways Club has offered a onebedroom apartment for a week’s holiday, and there are other donations such as beauty treatments, meals at local restaurants, hampers, show tickets and too many more to mention. These proceedings should be completed by 10.30pm, when more cabaret follows, and the show finishes off with a Northern Soul disco, complete with a leading DJ from the North-West of England. Tables are available for a “shop till you drop” event, from 2-6pm, and it’s an excellent chance to get some Christmas shopping done! Other events such as Tombola and Play Your Cards Right will be going on throughout the busiest of times. It all adds up to a fantastic, fun-filled day for the family - and, of course, for everyone else who wants contribute to this worthwhile cause.
Airport ‘crash’ is handled smoothly
TENERIFE North Airport this week successfully completed its “Comprehensive SelfProtection Plan” which is a full emergency simulation.
It is an annual event, which evaluates the performance and coordination procedures set out in that plan. Numerous institutions and groups were involved, as would be the case in a genuine emergency at the airport . The exercise, called Fokker 2013, simulated the crash of an aircraft ATR-72, with 40 passengers and four crew on board. The “simulation” was that upon the plane landing, the main landing gear o the left failed, causing the aircraft to skid off the runway. This caused a fuel spill and subsequent fire in the engine of the aircraft, which suffered extensive damage to its structure. Juan Manuel Santana, Director General of Security and Emergency, could not over-emphasise the necessity of such training exercises. “It’s very important and we are always learning,” he said. “This drill helps us both internally, within the airport complex, and outside it, given the volume of air traffic in this area. “These trials help us to improve co-ordination
between the institutions involved, the operation of all of them and protocols. “And if I had to highlight a strength of our system of public security and emergencies, it would be the co-ordination.” Alberto Martin-Carbajal, AENA Director of Communications in the Canaries, was equally pleased, saying: “These exercises are very useful. They help us work on the security at Spanish airports and it helps us focus on prevention and responsiveness to the occurrence of an accident of this type.” After the “accident”, the airport Self-Protection Plan was activated. The control tower alerted the Fire Fighting Service (SEI), facilitating the location and all data from the crashed plane, via the Canary Control Centre and Co-ordinating Centre Airport
(CEOPS). Once alerted, the Emergency Coordination Centre and the 1-1-2 service evaluated the situation with the airport management, and the Canary Islands Government activated the accident aeronautical PLATECA level 2. In this week’s simulation, the fire engines could not reach the scene because of the rough terrain, so the airport firefighters extinguished the fire with stored extinguishers and hoses. They were then able to release the passengers and extinguish the external fire. Meanwhile, the PLATECA command post activated the SAR helicopter and organised the medical help through the Emergency Canario (SUC) and the Red Cross. When they arrived, the SUC and health control commanders aided the wounded on the scene
and took charge of their transfer to the field hospitals to give them first aid. For this exercise 20 professionals, including doctors, nurses and paramedics with a mobile unit from two mobile hospitals, were used, along with rapidresponse vehicles and several ambulances. The exercise simulated 10 dead passengers, seven seriously wounded, 12 seriously injured, five minor injuries and 10 uninjured people. There were also around 100 people involved from different institutions and agencies involved, including Guardia Civil Security Forces, Local Police from La Laguna, handling agents, fuel supply companies, the Air Rescue Service (SAR) and all airport staff. The drill has been acknowledged as a resolute success by all those involved.

No more free justice? By Mariano Zunino Siri
IN November 2012, the Court Tax Law was approved (Law 10/2012). Basically, it stated that you would have to pay a fee (tax) if you wanted to sue someone.
This tax is applicable in civil, administrative and labour law. In other words, if you want to go to Court to protect your interests (or appeal a judgement), you have to pay the fee. The Spanish Government reviewed the law and made a few modifications in February, and it was given its Royal Decreelaw. It is a Spanish State tax applicable to Civil, Administrative and Labour jurisdiction, but
not applied to Criminal law. The claimant has to pay such tax in any claim for all kinds of process, executions, application of receivership, Administrative Claim, appeals at High Court and Supreme Court. And if the claimant does not pay the Tax fee, the case is dismissed. While this new law may seem harsh, it is designed to stop the Spanish system from
15th November - 21st November 2013
being bogged down with frivolous lawsuits and claims. The theory is that if it’s harder and more expensive to make an application, only genuine cases will get through the system. That said, there are many opinions against this law, as Spanish Constitution says that the access to Courts is free. In fact, many associations had
originally stated that they would appeal such law at the Constitutional Court. But after this year’s modification, it looks as though they changed their mind. Today, you cannot go to Court if you have no monies to pay the fee, notwithstanding the legal expenses form the likes lawyers and such. The amount to be paid is composed by two parts. One is a fixed
amount which could be 100 euros for small proceedings and up to 1,200 euros in the case of an Appeal before the Supreme Court. The variable amount is a percentage of the amount of the claim that goes from 0.10 % up to 0.50% of such amount depending also if the claimant is a company or a person. Until now, only corporations (and not in all the cases) paid a bond or duty in a small amount. The tax is paid through a 696 application form. In order to understand how serious the situation is, there are examples of legal cases in which the duty is higher than the amount to be claimed. In traffic fines, you can see how dissuasive the rule is. For instance, for a fine of 100 euros, the tax to pay was 200 euros! The amended Law changed that, stating that the tax cannot exceed 50% of the fine. In the said case, for a fine of 100 Euro, the tax should be 50%.
There is a famous example of medical negligence in which the claimant had to go up to the Supreme Court (the claim amount was 600,000 euros) and he would pay 11,300 euros. The new law has changed the maximum to 2,000 euros. In any case, it would be an important sum, bearing in mind that there are other costs to pay. Many legal experts have said that the Law is against the Spanish Constitution, and that the new system is a real obstacle to accessing Justice. Some also believe that it is in breach of the judgement of the Human Rights European Court. The real issue is that many citizens will not have the possibility of taking out legal proceedings through a lack of funds. And while the new law may itself be challenged in the law courts, for the time being, justice comes a price!

The Ferguson Files
By Joe Ferguson
YOU’D think that politicians would have better things to do these last couple of weeks.
Unemployment on the rise AGAIN - and the Dick Turpin tactics of holding everyone to ransom by those in charge of the fuel companies. It really has come to the point where you either pay up or freeze to death! And I’m not being dramatic. But no, these subjects have been swept to the end of the big list of things to do, and all because of one man. Russell Brand! You’ve probably seen the footage, noticed the story in newspapers and even heard it from friends. Russell Brand did a sit-down interview with Jeremy Paxman on BBC Newsnight. It was no big deal really. Russell was asked to
www.canarianweekly.com
Truth... you can’t handle the truth! edit the satirical political magazine Private Eye. And it was deemed interesting enough for Paxman to interview the comedian. It was the type of telly you either watched or just couldn’t be bothered. No big deal really. I watched it, laughed a little and afterwards thought no more about it … until the next morning. Politicians from all major parties decided that this was the biggest thing they needed to talk
I’VE been ranting and raving about the new Miley Cyrus for months now on Facebook, Twitter and anywhere else I can get an opinion written down. When I first heard We Can’t Stop, the initial single from her album Bangerz, I went on about how good it was. Well, the amount of replies I got saying: “Seriously Joe? Disney Miley Cyrus.” A few weeks in and everyone was singing it. Wrecking Ball got the attention because she was swinging naked and looking well hot in the video. Daytime TV shows devoted a whole hour on what a car crash she has become. Even President Obama was asked how she should represent America with better morals. Thankfully, he declined to answer such a moronic question. I’ve stood up for her because she’s a 20-year-old girl in the music business, using her sexuality to sell records. It has been done for more than 50 years, from Elvis through to the present day. So those getting on their high horses and thinking that it had never been done before should just be cast in prison and never see the light of day again, while wearing a blindfold. But my praise for her has gone forever following the MTV European Awards earlier this week. To stand on a stage, accept an award, sing to your fans, many of whom are young kids, and then light up a joint in front of millions was way over the line. I’m not easily shocked, and yes, it happened in Amsterdam, where it’s all freely available. I have no problems with anyone having a puff where it’s legal - as long as it’s out of sight from kids. Miley, I feel this will come back to bite you big time. Therefore, you deserve to be my villain of the week.
Page 20
about. Without going on in detail about the subject matter, the whole uproar was about two things Brand had said. 1. He has never voted 2. He said: “Get ready for a revolution” So all are up in arms over his statements. On every TV and radio show on which they were able to sound their political foghorns, they did! So let’s look at this as any normal-thinking person would, shall we. The fact that Russell Brand has never voted,
and being used as a political weapon, to his mind, is just ridiculous. Every one of these idiots sounding off were saying the exact same thing: “Mr Brand is sending out a very dangerous message to the young voter, and showing a serious lack of respect to the millions who fought and died in two world wars for us to have the right to vote.” Excuse me? Lack of respect to the millions who died? In one sentence, world history has been completely rewritten. It had nothing to do with a Nazi fascist regime at all, then? While you’re at it, Mr Political Genius, blame Russell on the persecution and murder of the millions of Jews during the war as well. Just in case they’ve forgotten, millions did die for our cause to keep our right of choice and freedom. And that word, “choice” is what
SO we have had the villain, and now it’s time for the hero. And it’s ME! You read that correctly. I am putting myself down as the hero of the week, not only because I can. But because I so deserve it. As many of you may remember, along with my radio show on Oasis Fm a century ago, I also wrote a weekly column in Canarian Weekly. The amount of calls, emails etc on a Friday afternoon I would receive after the paper had hit the street was always unbelievable. It was always straight down the middle. You either agreed or didn’t. I got the feedback and, to be totally honest, I never took one bit of notice. And that’s the great part of having a column! I’m no award-winning journalist, and have certainly not been trained in media work. I just speak and write what is exactly on my mind at the time. We all have opinions, and I decided a long time ago never to keep mine a secret. I’m not looking for a debate on them, and never will! If I make you think of the obvious, then I know I’m doing something right. So, no matter how long this column lasts, just remember that. It’s one person’s opinion only and will not change anything in your life. So I hope you take it for what it is: the ramblings of a middle-aged, bald-headed bloke - nothing more, nothing less. I anticipate the anger of many of you via the different social media links at the bottom of this page. And I applaud the fact that you also have an opinion to express, whatever I feel. And so for that, I thoroughly deserve the title of “Hero of the Week”. PS: Please picture me at a keyboard with my tongue firmly in my cheek.
he, Russell, is rightly doing. Maybe we should go down the same route as China and Syria: make law to vote - and if you don’t, you’re killed. And if you vote for the wrong person, you’re killed. And even then, after all is said and done, it’s fixed, and it was all for nothing. So in fact, millions of lives would have been wasted fighting one fascist regime to become another! And as for Brand calling on a “revolution”, that’s been seen as a threat. He didn’t mean in a “let’s all rise up with pitchforks in hand, get on our horse and cart and take the government down”. For anyone who actually saw the interview, he actually meant that the “younger voter” the politicians all seem worried about, can see through the lies, deceit and cheating tactics that they have been basing their life and agendas
on for years. So that’s what has possibly been the biggest thing in the Westminster corridors. Anything, it seems, to take away the thick clouds of suspicion that they are not doing what they were voted in to do - and paid to do! I’m pretty sure they will not be budgeting for the winter gas or electric bills. And if we all did, as one minister patronisingly advised, wear thicker jumpers in the cold, she should also have said: “Let them eat cake.” How these people get away with it is beyond me. Simply looking at it from a normal person’s point of view, I just wish they would start to get serious about the things that matter to all of us. On a personal note, I have never voted, either. My thoughts about Northern Ireland politics would take up every page of this newspaper!
It’s Only in Northern Ireland…
VERY touching to see Belfast politicians bow their heads at the Cenotaph, praying and giving their thanks to all who fell in two world wars to guarantee our freedom. The very next day, those same politicians were laughing about
the fact that, because of their interpretation of the Bible and their own narrow-minded, personal beliefs, they have laws that forbid women to have an abortion and gay men to give blood. What freedom, Mr Edwin Poots?

Drama series. Tom Weston is furious to see that Moray has set up a display of pocket watches which might steal attention away from his new Food Hall. When he sees Ladieswear buzzing from Denise’s latest innovation he decides to harness the effervescence of Moray’s ‘little champion’ and asks her to spend time in other departments to make improvements. Persisting with Fenton’s plan to reignite their intimacy, Moray asks Katherine if he can use her father’s watch as a centrepiece for their display, but she refuses. Moray is riled to learn Tom has been favouring Denise, fearing she is being used as a pawn, but is soon distracted as Katherine changes her mind about the watch. She reveals to Moray that although her father intended it to be a gift for her husband, she refrained from giving it to Tom because she felt it would always belong to Moray. Sam, the proud vendor of the new pocket watches, is mesmerised by the Glendenning watch.

Eight-part series in which Robson Green travels across his native county and discovers how it has played a role in shaping contemporary Britain. In episode four, Robson discovers how Northumberland’s border with Scotland has affected British history and how the bloody battles of the Middle Ages turned the area into a constant war zone. He visits Berwick-upon-Tweed, a town that changed hands between the English and the Scots thirteen times, and drops in on a training session with Berwick Rangers. Uniquely, they are the only English football team to play in the Scottish league. He also attends the Flodden Ride Out, when hundreds of locals cross the border on horseback to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Flodden, where King James IV and the flower of Scottish nobility were slain on 9 September 1513.

Fear of Flying Channel 4, 21:00
Caught on Camera. For most of us, getting on a plane is like catching a bus; just another way of getting from A to B. But imagine if you had a fear of flying and woke up in a cold sweat because you were catching a plane in the morning. Or had to be pushed and cajoled through security by your friends and pinned in your seat. Or sobbed in terror before grabbing your hand baggage and running for the door just as it closes. For about 20% of the UK population, for whom air travel is a living hell, such feelings are a terrifying and mortifying experience.

It’s a family feud as globe trotting Judith Chalmers takes on son, TV presenter Mark Durden-Smith, in the hunt for antiques that will turn a profit at auction. Their mini-break in the English countryside takes them through Worcestershire and Gloucestershire before ending at auction in Stroud. With £400 each to spend, all they need to pack in their racy 1970s TR6 are a couple of trusty tour guides in the form of experts Paul Laidlaw and James Lewis, who’ll help them sort the tourist tat from treasured souvenirs.

Richard helps dog minder Linda, from Brentwood, Essex, who can have up to ten dogs in her home at any one time and would rather spend time with her canine companions than cleaning. Civil servant Louise, from Wiltshire, cleans her sink 18 times a day, going through 17 bottles of bleach per week.

W C choice Nigel and Adam’s Farm Kitchen BBC1, 20:00
Nigel Slater and Adam Henson join forces to sow, grow, rear and cook Britain’s favourite foods, from a working farm in the Cotswolds. Revealing the top 50 fresh foods on the UK’s supermarket shopping lists, Nigel and Adam show how we can get the most flavour, value and variety from them all. In this first episode, the duo look at how our busy lifestyles have meant Britain has lost touch with where our food comes from and the best ways to cook it. With the rise of convenience foods meaning a decline in traditional cooking, can Nigel bring the art of cooking back to Britain? Nigel cooks up our favourite ready meal, lasagne, and tries to match the price of the off the shelf version of this popular dish. Adam, meanwhile, sets his own challenge to grow durum wheat, used to make pasta, on the Cotswolds farm. This episode also explores the UK’s favourite red meat - beef - and the journey it takes from farm to fork, before Nigel cooks a supersize Sunday roast for his guests on the farm.

In recent years, the internet has been changing the perception that most species have evolved to stick to their own kind and to generally not get along. Videos, generating millions of hits, are showing different species interacting in ways previously not thought possible. These animals are displaying what looks like friendship, affection and even love towards one another. But what lies at the heart of these behaviours? Can science explain why these unusual partnerships take place? And if so, what can they teach us about how the animal kingdom really works? Liz is on a mission to find the reasons behind the world’s cutest and weirdest Animal Odd Couples. Why a cat would adopt some ducklings? Could an orangutan really keep a dog as a pet? Could two animals of different species even fall in love?

The four remaining contestants must then showcase their skills to three of the UK’s toughest restaurant critics - Charles Campion, Tracey MacLeod and William Sitwell.

It is claimed that Britain’s middle classes are drinking too much - and are more at risk from problems with alcohol than the much-demonised young binge drinkers. Thousands are drinking at home as a reward or to relieve stress after a hard day’s work. And while most do not consider they have a problem, health experts say many are regularly consuming too much too often. Fiona Foster meets some of Britain’s secret drinkers and examines the impact that alcohol is having on their health.

Special edition of Panorama looking at a secret undercover unit run by the British Army in the early 1970s. Its existence was deniable and its tactics were so controversial that the unit was disbanded after just 14 months. Now, for the first time in 40 years, some of the unit’s former members break their silence and talk candidly to John Ware about how they took the war to the IRA, sometimes even imitating the IRA itself. The soldiers believe they saved many lives. But Panorama’s new evidence reveals that some members of the unit operated outside the law, firing on and killing unarmed civilians. The Ministry of Defence says it has referred Panorama’s allegations to the police.

Pride of our community THE entertainment sector has been pulling together over the last two weeks to help comrades who have fallen on hard times.
From time to time we all fall on bad times. Illness affects us all, whether directly or indirectly, and the spirit of Tenerife’s performers has been has been called upon twice in as many weeks. A benefit day was organised on 27th October at The Brewers Droop to help out Ted Harton, a gentleman who has been singing here for over 20 years. Ted, a lovely man who was always the first to volunteer his services at similar events in days gone by, is quite ill in hospital at the moment.
A FEW months ago, we were shocked to find out that Steve Powell, one half of resident duo Two Risky, discovered he had cancer.
And on Sunday, the Drunken Duck, on The Patch, will be holding a benefit day for him. He is fighting this horrible disease right now and again, the resolve of this Island knows no bounds because everyone will be there for him.
DRUNKEN DUCK
And, as always, his fellow entertainers were more than happy to perform to help him during this tough time for him. Another event was held on Sunday for Ted at Shenanigans bar in Las Americas, proving his popularity as entertainers turned out again, mixed and mingled, and did their bit on stage, raising more money for him. Between the two bars, a total of 3,000-plus was raised, with more donations still coming in. Both bars and the organisers of these benefits have asked me to pass on their thanks to everybody who donated prizes for the raffle and to those who came along and raised a glass in support of Ted Harten. A special thank-you must go to the Aithwaite family. They were on hol-
iday and enjoying what the Brewers Droop had to offer. They were so touched by the sense of community spirit within the entertainment scene that Mr Aithwaite went on to donate 200 euros. And later, when he found out the total had risen to 1,420 euros, he dug into his pocket again and added another 80 euros to round the figure up nicely to 1,500 euros. That’s not all, because the owners then decided to present him with a bottle of Bells whisky on stage. He accepted graciously, then auctioned the bottle off and raised a further 90 euros. This is the kind of guy you want at every benefit. Mr Aithwaite gave so much himself - and inspired people to dig deep and give more.
Steve, a popular artiste on stage and off, has been on the Island for a couple of decades and deserves nothing less. If you are reading about this for the first time, don’t forget to make your way to the Drunken Duck in Las Americas, where a plethora of acts will be all too willing to entertain you. These include: Jacqui Peters, Mel Faulkner, Cy Benson, Dee Daniels, Steve Delsy, Suzy Q, Peter Taylor Young, Alfie, Kracka and many more. And there will also be
various fund-raising events It all happens in aid of Steve when the clock strikes one on Sunday afternoon, and there will be food, plenty to drink, raffles, games and, all-importantly, live entertainment. I’ve been told by lots of holiday-makers, that they have experienced an overwhelming community spirit within these shores, and the organisers and bar owners deserve a huge thank-you for pulling out all the stops to help those in need.
LEONARDOS had to be the busiest bar for football last weekend. A few months ago the bar invested in a huge 80in TV, which is situated on the terrace. This has proved to be a huge draw with passing trade. The picture quality is so good you start to see the TV when walking towards Leonardos from 50 metres away. And they have plans to expand their family of giant screens in preparation for next year’s World Cup in Brazil There is an evening of international football tonight (Friday) with matches beginning from 4pm. England, the only home country to get through, take on Chile (kick-off, 8pm). Other UK teams are also in action, with Northern Ireland playing Turkey (7pm) and Scotland tackling the US (8.05pm). The Republic of Ireland, who failed miserably to qualify, kick off against Latvia at 7.45pm. Because of the international matches, the Premier League is suspended for a fortnight and the football shown over the weekend will be from Sky Bet League 1. The match to watch tomorrow (Saturday) will be the battle between Notts County and Wolves. Sunday’s pick is Bradford v Coventry (3.30pm). Again, the biggest terrace in Tenerife shows the biggest matches on the biggest screens. If you love sport, then you’ll love Leonardos. Leos also offers top-class evening entertainment with DJ Luke from 8.30pm and the resident duo taking to the stage from 9.30pm.

Mad Miley such a dope THE MTV European Music Awards, held at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam on Sunday, was the first time the Netherlands had hosted the ceremony since 1997.
These awards are different from others like The Brits. While the Brit Awards, for example, receive their nominees through an industry vote and the winners get chosen by those at the top echelons of the music industry, the EMAs are voted for by the public. Back in Sepetember, MTV fans tuned in around the world as the nominees were an-
nounced live on MTV Netherlands. Since then, Miley Cyrus must have been plotting to get herself involved in every headline involving the EMAs. Is she trying to take over the world? Amsterdam is known for its liberal laws on the consumption of marijuana, and it is perfectly legal to participate in the culture of smoking it in the coffee shops around the city. New megastar Miley has become such a regular in The Green Room that they have put up a picture of the pop princess on their walls alongside other celebrity visitors. Despite creating a lot of attention with her exploits on the nights leading up to the
awards, Miley went on to pick up the gong for Best Video for Wrecking Ball. She wasn’t happy with the media storm she had already created and, again, re-lit the fuse as she received her award.
After a few words, Miley appeared to light up what looked like a joint. Whatever her masterplan is, please let it have a happy ending! This year’s event was hosted by the original party rocker, Redfoo,
who performed a quality service. And backstage host was Arianna Grande, one of the most popular celebs on social media. With over 10 million Twitter followers and seven million fans on Facebook, she was the perfect choice for bringing the inside stories from backstage online to EMA fans. There were performances from The Killers and Katy Perry, who took a little bit of stick over her house-wifey choice of dress. The uber cool Snoop Dogg took to the stage, as did Robin Thicke, Imagine Dragons and Bruno Mars, who bagged the award for best song, Locked Out Of Heaven, which, when you look at the other songs in the
category, Blurred Lines, Diamonds, Thrift Shop and Get Lucky, you begin to realise that Bruno has had a mighty rise to success and is at the top of his game. A difficult one to swallow was the award for best live act. Beyonce took this one, yet it was only last year that she was criticised for lipsyncing the American National Anthem. Then again, she has sold 118 million records and collected 17 grammys and a host of trophies and accolades in every award category. Queen Bey certainly lives up to her title and, on top of her enormous global record sales, she has also sold out stadiums worldwide. She is by far the biggest female music artiste right now.

It wasn’t long before their style was noticed. They were signed to the Island label and their first album, Stereo Typical, was released in October 2011. What got my attention with Martin initially was the song. House music can sometimes sound familiar, and Animals has that effect. Countdown to Christmas CHRISTMAS is approaching fast - and there really isn’t any time to waste in getting yourself geared up for the festive season. Here are several reminders of your priorities, and woe betide anyone who leaves everything to the last minute! It simply doesn’t work, as you will find out in that last week before the great event. NOVEMBER 22nd: Stir-up Sunday Today is traditionally when you should make your Christmas pudding. Get started early, as it needs to cook for up to six hours. Or buy one ready-made … just don’t tell the neighbours. 23rd: Christingles If you’re feeling really keen, make Christingles, for which you will need the following: an orange with a red ribbon tied around it, a small candle inserted in the top and some dried fruit or sweets (usually Dolly Mixtures), which are secured to the Christingle orange using four cocktail sticks. Gorgeous. 25th: Freezer
Page 38
Clear the freezer. You’re going to need space, if only to hide all the mess before the guests arrive. Might not be a bad idea to give the fridge a clear out, too. 26th: Stock up early Start stocking up: goose fat for the best roast potatoes, plain flour for dusting said potatoes, sliced bread that can go into the freezer for turkey sandwiches, mayonnaise, pickles, mustards, cranberry jelly in jars, peeled, cooked chestnuts and brandy for the brandy butter. 28-29th: Baking weekend Make your cake this weekend, so you have time to soak it with brandy. For home-made mince pies, you’ll need mincemeat in jars, flour, butter and lard. Make them now and stick them in the freezer. 30th: For the aftermath Stock up on bin-liners, dustbin bags and washing-up liquid. There’ll be some serious cleaning up to be done after Christmas. But remember, if you cook, you shouldn’t also be cleaning. Hint, hint. DECEMBER
1st: Temperatures A day to consider temperatures. A meat thermometer can help prevent under-cooking, and it will also stop everybody getting drunk while the bird has an extra hour in the oven. 2nd: Emergency supplies Don’t forget to stock up matches, fire-lighters, candles and torch batteries in case of power cuts - and perhaps some burns ointment for the kitchen drawer. 3rd: Order the meat If you haven’t ordered your turkey by now, do it today. Also, chipolatas, whole ham, pork joint or whatever comprises your main meal. You could also think about getting a whole or half game pie, which will keep well over the festivities. 4th: Find cheap drink Be on the look-out all month for good champagne and wine offers. They’re out there, but just don’t get through your stocks before the holiday starts. 5th: Table decorations Buy crackers, napkins, candles, lots of matches, paper plates, table cloths
and decorations. Also, get cake decorations so you can cheat if you’ve bought one, or decorate your own. 8th: Emergency pudding Buy in plenty of vanilla ice-cream. Somebody always moans about hating brandy butter. 9th: Start your cheeseboard Buy a good lump of camembert for your Christmas cheeseboard. It’s cheaper than brie and will be nicely ripe by the time you need it. 11th: Stale bread Don’t chuck out stale bread because you’ll need it for stuffing and bread sauce. 13th: Do a dry run Have a few friends round this Sunday who you won’t get to see over Christmas and do a dry run of the meal with a chicken. 14th: Make your own booze Saving money by making presents this year? You’ve just enough time to infuse spirits with fruits and spices to give as gifts. Try good-quality vodka with lemon zest and sugar syrup, or whis-
ky with sugar, cinnamon sticks and orange peel. 15th: Ice, and more ice Buy and freeze bags of ice cubes before everyone runs out. 16th: TV snacks Crisps, nuts, dates, orange and lemon slices, plus chocolates in big tins to squabble over during the Doctor Who Christmas special. 17th: Vegetables Don’t forget: greens, salad (try to buy it growing in a box so the leaves last longer), potatoes (twice as many as you think you’ll need). Plus lemons, carrots, root vegetables and sprouts. 18th: Fill the larder Christmas Day is on Wednesday, so you have a whole weekend of catering stretching before you. Stock up on dried pasta, tinned tomatoes, onions, garlic, and mince in the freezer. That way, you’re covered for surprise, hungry guests when the leftovers run out. 19th: Check your bird’s big enough Between three and four people will need a 2.25kg turkey; 5-6 people require a 3kg bird; 7-8 get
a 4kg one; 9-10 people, 5kg; 11-12 people, 6kg; 13-14 people, 7kg; 15-16 people, 8kg. Any more guests and you’ll need two birds, probably two ovens and a nice liedown afterwards in a darkened room. 20th: Turkey test Check that your turkey will it into the baking tray, and likewise your oven. If not? Move house. 22nd: Breakfasts Don’t forget breakfasts over Christmas. For some reason, everyone is always hungry, so make sure you’ve got bacon, eggs, tomatoes, sausages etc. 23rd: Check the cupboards Got enough staples like pepper, salt, kitchen towels, oven gloves and cooking oil? 24th: The day before Collect your turkey and any other meats or fish. Make the stuffing for your bird and keep it in the fridge. Work out your cooking times now, and write them down. Then assume you’ll eat two hours later than you plan to. And whatever you do, enjoy!

By David Hudgell THIS climber has a peculiar name, but the beautiful flowers it produces make it a must-have for any garden.
It is called Solanum crispum Glasnevin Chilean blue potato vine - and it really is a stunner. Plus, it is a vigorous grower, especially if you have a terrace or patio garden and want to blot out nosey neighbours! It’s actually related to the potato family (Solanaceae) but, in fact, it is merely a distance cousin to the humble kitchen spud, and looks nothing like one. The name itself is misleading and does not begin to describe this gorgeous, semi-evergreen shrub, with its slightlyscented, deep lavenderblue, flowers. They are borne in large clusters, similar to the flowers on potato plants, and thrive in our climate over here
blooming marvelous
Each flower has attractive contrasting, prominent yellow stamens, and in some years the flowers are followed by yellowish-white fruit, which are not edible. Like many of our plants and shrubs over here, it is a native of South America and was introduced to the UK in the 1700s. Such was its popularity that the Royal Hor-
ticultural Society gave it an Award of Garden Merit (AGM) in 1939. It positively thrives over here and is available at most garden centres in the South. It is a vigorous plant and can grow up to 20ft. But it is easily controlled by pruning, which boosts it even more. The stems need tying to wires on a fence or wall, but it is prone to wander at will,
which merely adds to its charm and it lends an exotic feel to the garden, patio or verandah. Growing tips The solanum prefers a limey, well-drained soil in full sun, which is why it is so suitable to grow in Tenerife. And a high-potash fertiliser in spring will encourage a profusion of flowers in summer and onwards. Now, you have a triple
choice: tie the young shoots to wires for support, let the plants scramble through other mature shrubs, or grow them over a pergola and watch the flowers hang down above your head. To prevent the plants becoming a tangled mass once established, prune the flowering shoots from the previous year to two or three buds from the main stems forming the permanent framework of branches. But a word of caution: don’t prune all old growth hard at one time because you may kill the plant. To encourage new growth from the base, cut out one or two old
growths every two or three years. You can propagate by taking semi-ripe cuttings from summer to early autumn. Take three-inch cuttings with a heel of older wood and put them around the edge of small pots of multipurpose compost. Place a polythene bag over them and put on a bright windowsill, but not in direct sunlight. If you have a propagator, gentle heat will speed the formation of roots. The cuttings should root in about four weeks. Pot up individually and plant out in spring. Solanums are generally trouble-free, but aphids can sometimes be a problem. No problem, just splash soapy water over the entire plant if it’s not already reaching for the sky. But take note: All parts of the plant are poisonous and can cause discomfort if eaten, so make sure children cannot touch.
Our heaven-scent petunias THERE cannot be a finer welcome to the morning than opening the door to your home and being hit by the wonderful scent of petunias. They come from Argentina and have become such a fixture in beds, borders, tubs, pots, containers and hanging baskets that you wonder what on earth we did before we discovered them. Actually, petunias
have been around for nearly two centuries, so it comes as a surprise to learn that new varieties - new styles with exciting colours and colour combinations - still arrive every year, mostly intended for containers. Petunias are one of the most popular flowering annuals, because of their stunning, lively blooms, although you must dead-head frequently to promote new blooms.
15th November - 21st November 2013
Never mind messing about with seeds or cuttings - although there is a lot of pleasure in creating your own -because here in Tenerife, you can pick up magnificent specimens for around 60 cents each at garden centres, and they can flower for months because they thrive in the sunshine. Petunias come in four distinct categories: Grandiflora (the most popular, with 3-4in blooms), Multiflora
(compact, with loads of blooms), Milliflora (miniature plants, with 1-1½in flowers), and Groundcover Petunias (just 6in high, but they spread far and wide). There are some spectacular one-offs as well with the most some amazing colours, including two unusual green-edged varieties. I’m not sure if they are available here yet, but Pretty Much Picasso is a trailer with unique,
green-edged, purple flowers, while Moonlight is bushier and has green-edged blue flowers. Other unusual one-offs include Frillytunia Pink, which harks back to the Victorian era, with huge ruffled pink flowers on slightly spreading plants. The equally frilly Harmony is palest pink with a dark network of purple veins, and Raspberry Blast (which sounds slightly offensive but
funny), is a vivid trailer with starry flowers in magenta and rose pink. The big surprise is the first black petunia, accompanied by some black bicolours. Black Velvet is genuinely black, while Phantom is black with a bold creamy star. Whatever the colour, your garden or patio will be transformed overnight with these magnificent scents, emanating from today’s petunias.

SOME Spanish people are forever running to the loo because they have an embarrassing problem.
Up to 18% of them are suffering from the over-active bladder syndrome, which means they need a wee too often. David Castro, a Professor of Urology at the University of La Laguna, attended a meeting in Madrid at the weekend, along with 300 other doctors, to
discuss the major developments of last month’s Annual Congress of the International Continence Society (ICS). Symptoms of overactive bladder include the need to pee more than eight times a day, a sudden need to pee and an involuntary loss of urine associated with urgency). This condition, more common in women, increases with age, and Prof Castro, a new member of the ICS committee, told Europa Press: “It affects the quality of life for these
patients and limits their social activities. “That’s because they need to go to the bathroom constantly and unpredictably.” He equates the impact it has on their daily lives with the problems facing people who have diabetes. So far, the main treatment for overactive bladder syndrome includes a change in lifestyle, such as doing away with coffee and alcohol, and retraining the bladder with pelvic floor exercises - or trying to retain (or hold it in) whenever the urge occurs. This year’s highlights at the Annual Congress included 30 Spanish presentations for a remedy, “And that,” said Prof Castro, “means that they are doing well in the field of urinary incontinence research.” And that bodes well for all sufferers, especially in Spain and the Canaries.

Health and Fashion
Does the incrowd exist?
How to reverse age process, or at least keep fit By Val Sainsbury
By Ruth Benson
GOING on a health kick reverses ageing at the cellular level, according to researchers in America.
FASHION: the Oxford dictionary definition is “something popular of the latest style of clothing, hair decoration or behaviour”. But fashion can mean different things to different people. Just because something is in fashion does not necessarily suit someone, be it the style, the colour or because of size, height or age, for example. So can anyone be fashionable? Is it just for the young and thin? For us to be in or out of fashion, we need to be wearing, doing or looking at what is popular, or considered to be the “in thing” at any particular moment or period in time, or so we are led to believe. Is fashion as simple as this, or can it be a state of mind; how we feel, how we look and what we wear, whether it is deemed to be in fashion or not? What is classed as “in fashion” or this season’s trends? Is it determined by the prestigious fashion weeks in London and Paris, and then replicated by the high street stores to make it affordable to the masses? Over the years we have seen numerous, memorable fashion styles, from the mini in the Sixties, flares in the Seventies and shoulder pads in the next decade. But more recently, fashion has seemed to struggle to make an impact. Today’s trends seem to be more about celebrities and what they wear
A team from the University of California team believe they have found the first evidence that a strict regime of exercise, diet and meditation can have such an effect. But experts say although the study in Lancet Oncology is intriguing, it is too early to draw any firm conclusions. The survey looked at just 35 men with prostate cancer - and those who changed their lifestyle had, demonstrably, younger cells in genetic terms. The researchers saw visible cellular changes in the group of 10 men who switched to a vegetarian diet. They also stuck to a recommended timetable of exercise and stress-busting meditation and yoga. The changes related to protective caps at the end of our chromosomes, called telomeres. Their role is to safeguard the end of the chromosome and to prevent the loss of genetic information during cell division. As we age and our cells divide, our telomeres get shorter - their structural integrity weakens, which can tell cells to stop dividing and die. Researchers have been questioning whether this process might be inevitable, or something that could be halted or even reversed. The latest work by Prof Dean Ornish and his colleagues suggests telomeres can be lengthened, given the right encouragement. They measured telomere length at the beginning of their study and again after five years. Among the 10 men with low-risk prostate cancer, who made comprehensive life-
style changes, telomere length increased significantly by an average of 10%. In comparison, telomere length decreased by an average of 3% in the remaining 25 men, who were not asked to make any lifestyle changes. Shorter telomeres have been linked with a broad range of agerelated diseases, including heart disease, and a variety of cancers. The study did not set out to check if lifestyle changes and telomere lengthening would improve cancer outcomes. But the researchers say this should be investigated. Prof Ornish said: “The implications of this relatively small pilot study may go beyond men with prostate cancer. “If validated by largescale, randomised, controlled trials, these comprehensive lifestyle changes may reduce significantly the risk of a wide variety of diseases and premature mortality. “Our genes, and our telomeres, are a predisposition, but they are not necessarily our fate.” Dr Lynne Cox, an Oxford University biochemistry expert, said it was not possible to draw any conclusions from the research. But she added: “Overall, though, the findings of this paper, that changes in lifestyle can have a positive effect on markers of ageing, support the calls for adoption of, and adherence to, healthier lifestyles.” Dr Tom Vulliamy, sen-
15th November - 21st November 2013
ior lecturer in Molecular Biology at Queen Mary University of London, said: “It is really important to highlight that this is a small pilot study. “Given this, I’m definitely going to wait to see whether this can be replicated on a larger scale, and with more sizeable effects, before I get excited.” Experts agree that telomere shortening is unlikely to be the sole explanation for human ageing. For example, humans have much shorter telomeres than primates and mice, yet live for far longer. “But past work has shown that people who lead a sedentary lifestyle can experience accelerated cellular ageing in the form of more rapid shortening of their telomeres.” Telomeres have been compared with the plastic tips on shoelaces because they prevent chromosome ends from fraying and sticking to each other. If that were the case, they would scramble an organism’s genetic information to cause cancer, other diseases or even death. Yet each time a cell divides, the telomeres get shorter. When they get too short, the cell can no longer divide, so it becomes inactive, or “senescent”, or dies. This process is associated with ageing, cancer and a higher risk of death. And that is why telomeres have also been compared with a bomb fuse.
and, in some cases, using fashion to make statements. A recent example includes role models such as Miley Cyrus, who became famous as a sweet teen in Disney’s Hannah Montana and now uses every occasion to shock us more with how little or obscure her outfits are. Another such example is Lady Ga Ga, where fashion is making a statement rather than being worn by the likes of you and me. Following fashion trends may still apply more to young people. But in this day and age, we are not categorised by how we dress, as in previous generations, and what is deemed suitable for our age. You will see young women wearing fashions that women in their 40s and older will wear. That’s because fashion is no longer age-defined but more about confidence and choice. Clothing, shoes, makeup and hair styles are not applied to a certain age.
No longer are people, especially women, wearing clothes suitable for their age, and the old stereotypes such as blue rinses and sensible shoes. So what should we be wearing? What is fashionable, or what we feel is right for our age? This will be the subject of arguments from all sides. It is more a case of what suits each individual’s style, size, height, colouring and confidence. Fashion to me, therefore, is about wearing, looking and feeling good in yourself, so we can all feel fashionable, however we wear our hair, and whatever clothes, makeup or shoes we choose to wear. With this in mind, fashion is more about what you feel comfortable in, what suits each individual while wearing what is on sale in the shops. At London Look, in Amarilla Golf, we aim to provide “fashionable” clothing for all ages, styles and sizes. All our clothing is brought over from London-based warehouses which stock some of the popular high street stores. Part of the reason we opened London Look was to provide men and women with unique, quality clothing; something a little different than the other shops here on the Island while being cool and affordable. Over the coming weeks, we will look at the latest ranges for men and women and, in the next article, we will be looking towards the Christmas party season!

Las Cazuelitas Restaurant
Family affair is fantastic THE hospitality truly is amazing at the family-run Las Cazuelitas in Buzanada - and so is the food!
The restaurant is owned and run by Federico Morales, who is also the chef, and he genuinely believes in offering value for money. Federico from Valle San Lorenzo, has been in the business all his life. He spent 13 years as Head Chef in the Hotel Conquistador, in Playa de Las Americas. He then had a spell at the Black Jack Restaurant in the Costa Adeje-based Hotel GranTinerfe casino, until he decided to open his own place. We were welcomed on arrival with a drink and a chat with Federico while deciding what dishes we were going to sample. Eventually, we decided on various plates of delicious tapas rather than a big meal. Everything looked so good that it was hard to chose! But, finally, we started with bread and the normal Ali-Oli (garlic mayonnaise) & Canarian Mojo sauces. It was a sound choice as we began with some Canarian Goat’s cheese with honey and nuts, followed by Smoked Salmon in guacamole and sesame, wrapped in Serrano ham. Delicious! We then decided on a mixture of Croquettes of Meat and Tuna, together with a plate of roast vegetables, finishing off with a huge plate of “Prawns in their
Page 42
Jackets” (that’s breadcrumbs in layman’s terns). We didn’t want to go too far over the top believe me, the temptations were there. But
the desserts looked so appealing that we left sufficient space to sample them as well. In the meantime, we had another chat with Federico and compli-
mented him on his wonderful food. And, of course, we simply had to discuss with him the delicious-looking “afters”. All his food is freshly cooked and, having always been a chef, he
doesn’t believe in the “out of the freezer into the pan” method. His favourite meal to eat is his beloved “Potaje Canario”, a thick Canarian soup filled with potatoes and vegetables. And his favour-
ite meal to cook is lamb, embracing his own recipe, which he calls “Cordero con Tomillo al horno” - lamb cooked in thyme in the oven. After sampling his cooking, you can imagine just how mouthwatering - reason alone to make a second visit to this magical restaurant. We finally decided to take the plunge into his sweet menu and chose fresh strawberries and cream, his home-made, hot profiteroles with his special, trademark, recipe sauce. The strawberries were lovely, but delicious is simply not strong enough a word to describe those chocolate goodies. We finished off with another coffee and another few words with Federico. We also must mention the fabulous, attentive service we received from his two waiters: his son Jorge and nephew Carlos. So if you are looking for somewhere new to eat with excellence virtually guaranteed, then take my advice: choose Las Cazuelitas and experience the hospitality and tasty food of the Morales family. You will find the restaurant on the main Valle San Lorenzo road, just past the Buzanada roundabout on the right-hand side. So why not pop in and reserve a table? Or call 669 599 216 (see Canarian Weekly Food pages for the restaurant’s advert).

Los Abrigos restaurant voted fifth-best in Spain Old spice not to be sniffed at! DO you have a few jars of spice or herbs tucked away in your kitchen for that special recipe?
LOS ROQUES restaurant, in Los Abrigos, is the fifth-best “Fine Dining” restaurant in Spain.
Customers showed their appreciation of the restaurant in that category of the 2013 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards. These annual accolades acknowledge the world’s finest hotels and restaurants, and they are delivered by genuine travellers who have direct experience of the establishments. Los Roquese has outstanding views of Los Abrigos harbour and the coast, as well as a modern interior. The overall impression is
fine dining, but the atmosphere is relaxed and informal. Blanca Zayas, head of communications for TripAdvisor in Spain, said: “Gastronomy is a big part of the travel experience, and this time we wanted to analyse the tastes of our community for the world’s favourite restaurants.” “This year, they have highlighted some amazing restaurants in popular destinations, but we have also discovered some hidden gems.” He added: “Excellent service and quality remain the hallmarks of the Travellers’ Choice winners.” Peter Borg, who coowns Los Roques, said: “As a team of just six, working in a small inde-

pendent restaurant, we are pleased and proud to receive this award. “Being listed among such national, gastronomical stars as El Celler de Can Roca, Martin Berasategui and Arzak is a credit to the whole team. “And it means a great deal to all of us, especially because it is based on the recommendations of our customers.” Peter and Andrew Day left behind their officebased careers and central London home in 2004 to do something different. Their zeal for eating out led them to create Los Roques from a customer point of view, based on their own dining experiences around the world. They now have a smallholding in Tenerife, and they even grow some of the produce used in the restaurant. Both are very handson, running, maintaining and working in
the restaurant daily. “People are here for a holiday or for Island life” said Peter. “Generally, they don’t want something stiff and formal. Most want to chat about food, wine and Tenerife.” Everything served in the restaurant is homemade from local ingredients mainly. The restaurant website says: “There is no dress code. Dress up or dress down, as long as you’re dressed! “We’re open for dinner at 7pm from Tuesday to Saturday, for lunch as Café Los Roques from 1pm until 4pm from Thursday to Saturday, and we advise making a reservation.” Dishes include Prawn Bisque with Basil Cream, Vegetable Pakora with Raita and Lime Pickle, Oven Baked Sea Bass with Chipotlescented Italian Bean Stew, and Slow Roast Short-Rib of Beef with Chimichurri.
Well, that special meal probably came and went a long time ago and those jars have simply sat there, ignored, lonely and well past their sell-by dates. But you are not alone, so don’t feel guilty. Most of us have jars and bottles bought in a fit of culinary enthusiasm which we have employed once, or not at all, and shoved to the back of the cupboard or drawer. An online survey by takeaway service Just Eat has discovered that forgotten spices are, typically, two years out
of date, and that some are three to four years past their best. Paprika is the top superfluous flavouring, kept in 25% of households, followed closely by chilli and curry powder, turmeric and oregano. And more than 30% of households never check the use-by date on a herb or seasoning before using them, Graham Corfield, of Just Eat, said: “Life is too short to be sifting through out-of-date cumin every time you want something useful for a dish. “Sometimes, we should give ourselves a break and leave the cooking to the takeaway professionals.” But he would say that, wouldn’t he!

Empire Modern British Restaurant
The steak ad-venture IT’S not exactly a hard life being a restaurant reviewer because you get to feast on some of the finest cuisine.
You also sample amazing wines and enjoy some wonderful restaurants. But there is the occasional downside. The wonderful Safari centre is the home of four Venture Restaurants, and last week I was fortunate enough to dine at Empire Modern British Restaurant & Steak House, to give it its full title! And it does everything it says in the name. Which is when the downside occurred. There is just so much choice, so many differ-
Page 44
ent dishes to sample and only one decision to make. The table next to us were enjoying the Fish and Chips, which is something I’ve enjoyed at Empire before. The key is the freshness of the cod.
Eventually, I decided to try the Steak Tartare, which is such a hard dish to get right. You’d think there is nothing to it, but you would be greatly mistaken. The meat has to be the right temperature, the dish has to be mixed
correctly - and in a certain order! Tastes vary, so the seasoning needs be measured, and even then it’s easy to get the texture wrong. There was never a moment’s concern as the waiter prepared the dish exactly to my requirement. It’s a dish that seems to put some diners off but if you haven’t tried it, I urge you to do so here. It’s tasty, light and, at the price, an amazing starter. My colleague opted for the Seared Queen Scallops with the Crispy Belly Pork. This was served with the delicious creamy peas, which are an Empire speciality. Again, scallops seem a simple dish, but they are easily overcooked. Ours were perfect and went really well with the pork. Having thoroughly enjoyed the Ham Hock and amazing Beef Wellington on previous visits, I elected to sample the Steak and Ale Pudding for my main course. The steak is the same 28-day aged variety used in the other dishes. And while the mushrooms and carrots are great, it’s all about the gravy. The thyme is not overpowering, while the brilliant Speckled Hen beer shines through. It really is a well-crafted dish. My partner thought she would try out the steakhouse part of
Empire and opted for the traditional Sirloin Steak. While the steak in my pudding was dry aged, these cuts are wet aged and nicely marbled. This gives the steak great flavour and, while I understand that some people like their steaks well done, you need to retain the moistness for that great sirloin flavour. Along with the house special thrice cooked chips, it was another first-rate dish. You always know when you are in a Venture Restaurant because
the standard of service is so high and the Empire crew maintain the benchmark: always attentive and service with a smile. As it should be. Finally, if you are a wine-lover, then stop by Empire. They are refreshing their wine cellar, and we were lucky enough to sample a few of the new options. One in particular hit the heights; a deep-red crianza 1492 Santa Fe, which was a real delight. Perfect with the meat dishes, easy on the palette, it’s a wine to ask for when you are next in Empire.

New Golf is electrifying By Jav VOLSWAGEN’S new zero-emission version of their perennial best-selling Golf will go on sale in the UK next spring.
The German car-manufacturer have high hopes for this revolutionary e-Gol, and Hans-Jakob Neusser, VW’s head of R&D, suggests it will undercut the recently-introduced BMW i3, which sells for around £30,680. The firm have taken a slowly-slowly approach to developing the e-Golf to ensure it meets with full customer approval in advance. Now, however, with rising public awareness of the latest electric
cars, and with the progress they have made, VW have are confident enough to install it in the market place. But unlike BMW’s carbon-fibre-intensive i3, Nissan’s Leaf and Renault’s Zoe, VW have based their new electric car on the existing seventh-generation Golf. That’s because a number of internal studies carried out in recent years have revealed potential electric car-buyers are more interested in overall, everyday practicality than fancy styling. It is a typical conservative approach by VW, who are sure will prove correct over the longer term. Apart from a blue strip adorning its grille, a pair of e-Golf badges front and rear and full LED headlamps, there appears, initially, to be little else to differentiate the new e-Golf. But a closer inspection reveals its detailed aerodynamic refine-
ments, which help it to slip through the air with greater efficiency than its combustion-engined siblings. Included is a new front bumper, a closed-off grille to block the entry of air to the engine bay, additional underbody panelling for smoother air-flow at speed, a rear spoiler atop the tailgate and a new rear bumper. To help streamline assembly at its Wolfsburgbased manufacturing base and keep production costs in check, the e-Golf uses the same MQB platform structure and high-strength, steel-body structure as all the latest Golfs. One body style, a five-door hatchback, is planned to underpin sales, although VW do not rule out adding a three-door hatchback at a later stage, if wanted by the public. Mounted transversely up front in the space occupied by the Golf’s variety of petrol and diesel
powerplants is a synchronous electric motor, in-house developed, engineered and produced. It is tuned to operate at a maximum 12,000rpm and develops 114bhp and 200lb ft of torque in the most liberal of three driving modes. Drive is channelled to the front wheels through an in-house produced single-speed gearbox, known as the EQ270. Energy for the electric motor is provided by a 24.2kWh lithium ion battery weighing 318kg and mounted underneath the boot at the rear. It comprises 264 individual cells and generates a nominal 232 volts. Charging time is put at 13 hours on a 240-volt household socket. But this can be cut to just four hours with an optional, combined-charging system which allows the e-Golf to plug in at a charging station. There are no compromises in interior space
and, as with the exterior, it has a mainly familiar look. It also has an eightinch touch-screen colour monitor as standard, providing the basis for a range of unique onboard functions, including a so-called range monitor, energy-flow indicator and charge manager. It starts with a simple crank of a key in the ignition, at which its instruments spring to life to indicate the electric motor is primed. You then press a button to disengage the electronic handbrake and select d (for drive) via the gear lever. Progress is silent at city speeds, and there is sufficient power on tap and to make the e-Golf fun in an urban environment. While they have focused on making the e-Golf easy to operate, VW have also provided it with variety of standard energy-boosting
functions to help the driver extend its range. Performance -wise, there’s little to complain about. With 199lb ft of torque available the moment you nudge the throttle in normal mode, the e-Golf bursts forth with a strong surge, hitting 37mph in 4.2sec - quicker than the Golf GTI, says VW. The 0-62mph time is not quite so impressive, at 10.4sec, but the allelectric Golf is anything but slow. Top speed depends on the driving mode: 87mph in normal, 71mph in Eco and 56 mph in Eco Plus. The e-Golf is said to have a 118-mile range, but with variances in route profile and driving style taken into account, VW suggest the real-world range is between 81-118 miles. The price has yet to be announced, but if you do not need a car for long journeys, this e-Golf could be right up your street.
BladeGlider heading for race track! THIS is the Nissan BladeGlider, an astonishinglooking all-electric sports car which makes its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month.
Despite much work needed to ensure it clears safety regulations, Nissan bosses believe it’s a goer - and that it will make it to the production stage by 2017. Andy Palmer, Nissan’s Executive Vice-President, told Auto Express: “We have a buck (prototype) running based on an Ariel Atom with a narrow track at the front. “I’ve driven it and it’s sensational. With the batteries positioned low down, the grip is incredible.” Nissan say the BladeGlider production car could see the first use of in-wheel electric motors. And Francois Bancon, head of strategy, says:
“A clean slate was the starting point for this project. “The goal was to revolutionise vehicle architecture to change the way we think about
15th November - 21st November 2013
cars, and to see how zero emissions can help redefine our conception of vehicle basics.” The inspiration for the machine’s 1.0-metre-wide front tread
and 1.8m-plus rear width comes from the Deltawing Le Mans car, which has proved that its design helps improve handling and aerodynamics.
Unlike the Le Mans car, though, this concept has seating for three - the driver sitting in the middle with two passengers behind and to each side.
Britain’s Ben Bowlby, who designed the 2012 Deltawing and the ZEOD (Zero Emission On Demand) race car slated for next year’s Le Mans, is the driving force behind the BladeGlider’s unique silhouette. “By its very nature the Deltawing shape, with its narrow 10cmwide front tyres, wide rear track and downforce maximising underbody, does not need huge rear wings like other race cars to keep it planted to the road,” he said. And those narrow front tyres develop enough grip to corner at over 120mph. It sounds like an exciting future for Nissan’s sports cars, and Palmer believes the project will come off “The BladeGlider tries to make the connection between GT Academy, Nismo and a new genre of sports cars which will appeal to a new generation of car fans,” he added. Telling, he concludes: “And I have every intention of making it happen.”

Special Auction – and that’s your lot! SAN Miguel Lions Club’s Special Auction, which comes around every year, takes place next Friday (22nd Nov), and there are plenty of goodies on offer. It will be held at Bar Albatros, Costa del Silencio, and features antiquities, memorabilia and collectables all going under the hammer. Viewing will be from 6.45pm and the auction begins 15 minutes later. So if you are looking for bargains in named china, glass crystal, jewellery and lots and lots of bargain antiques and collectables, make sure you come along. Over 70 lots will be going under the hammer, and there must be something for you, surely! This indoor auction gives you the chance to snap up a bargain or two, and enjoy a different evening, unwind and have a drink.
But this annual affair is not replacing the Lions’ monthly auction, which is still held on the first Friday of every month at Bar Kiosco Amador, right opposite Bar Albatros. This general auction gets underway at 7.30 pm., and the next two will be staged on 6th December and 3rd January. Club Secretary Ralph Solomon points out that the club’s Charity Shop has not moved and is still in The Dip, Costa del Silencio, directly under Bar Kiosco Amador and opposite Bar Albatros. “We are still collecting plastic bottle-tops for a special cause, and we’ll be happy to take any of your unwanted goods and clothes,” says Ralph. “Drop in and see us at our Charity Shop, and find out all about the various charity projects we are involved in.”
helped make the afternoon such a success and all the people who supported the event. One final note: The event helped find a forever home for Sooty, a little puppy, so well done to the owners, Jan and Kev. Ladies Day success On Sunday, Kel from the Los Cristianos charity shop put together a Ladies Day at the Blue Luna Cafe, Los Cristianos.
There was a fashion show, clothes and jewellery sale, a perfume sniff test, best would-be model, topless waiters, a male dancer, a chacha-cha line, a salsa demo and Silvio playing music to swoon to. A good time was had by all, and a total of 241 euros was realised. Many thanks to all at the Blue Luna. This will surely be a regular event, We do cats as well The black kitten in the photo is Storm. She is about seven weeks old and was being swept down the road during the recent downpour. She has such sad eyes, but we don’t know what happened to her family. She is obviously missing them and needs someone special to make her smile again. She has had her first vaccinations and is looking for a new mum and dad. If it could be you, call Siobhan on 630 857 626.

Sudoku X:
Mr. Fisher is a night watchman in a large company. On a certain morning when Mr. Fisher went to go home, his boss tells him: ‘I’m going on a business trip to Norway. Tomorrow I will depart from Heathrow airport.’ Mr. Fisher however advises him to take a boat. ‘Why should I?’ asked the President. ’Last night I dreamt that a plane to Norway crashes, just before it lands’, he says. The President smiles first, but since he is pretty superstitious he decides to take the boat. When he arrives in Norway, he is told that the plane which he should have taken had crashed. When the President returns from the trip, he gives a big reward to Mr. Fisher and immediately fires him. Why?

Wonderkid does it again!
By Roscoe
CD Tenerife 2 Eibar 0 ANOTHER, week another win! And another off-field row. And another brilliant display. And another “worldy” from Ayoze. If last week’s draw at Alaves was a turning point then, this win over a decent Eibar was the driving point. It’s now three wins in four matches and 10 points out of 12. For the first time this season Tenerife are out of the relegation zone and happy days are here again. Manager Alvaro Cervera again made changes. Maybe he doesn’t know his best XI, or maybe he doesn’t think it’s important. I know that the opposition haven’t got a clue what they are facing, and the psychological battle is won an hour before kick-off. This week, Borja was given a shock start and, after sitting out last week, Suso was back.
I can’t be the only one who has noticed how important Suso is in Santa Cruz. He hardly figures away. A bit like Paolo di Canio at West Ham a few years back. Eibar have taken to life in this league in their stride and it’s easy to see how they had won their previous three matches. But as I wrote last week, they play so narrow, and they were tailormade for Tenerife. With Aridane injured and with Eibar so tall, Cervera was always going to play a striker rather than, say, Luismi or Chechu in the hole. Many thought Guillem Marti would be given his first start in years, but Cervera went with the derided Borja. He’s had a shocking start to life back in Spain, and, while he pulled up no trees, he was so much better against Eibar. His time in Scotland shone through as he did the donkey work for Ayoze. The kicks, the hits all went Borja’s way leaving Ayoze the freedom of the city. Eibar wasted a few early chances before Tenerife found their groove from an unlikely source. Centre-back Bruno picked up a knock mid-

way through the first half and had to come off. With no defenders on the bench (THAT is what you call confidence!), Inigo Ros was drafted in. Now when I say that I don’t mean he was a straight replacement! Sometimes he slipped alongside Ruiz, and at other times Moyano moved across from rightback. And even Aitor Sanz had a go at it. I’m not sure this is in any coaching manual, but Ros certainly seized his chance. He broke up every Eibar move and was in the right place to bundle home Tenerife’s opener just before half-time. It was a deserved lead F

as Tenerife’s pacey wide men were causing havoc. The second half saw the visitors defending deep to try to stem the flow. They left former Tenerife attacker Arruabarrena alone, and the Eibar captain worked hard. He had a shocking season with us and was swiftly moved on to Poland. He then came back and dropped a level to play for Eibar, and it has been the making of him. He has improved, hand over fist, and was a real handful. But he is no Ayoze! The youngster had threatened the goal once or twice and on the hour he exploded. His fine run was picked out and he tore to the byline. Looking up, he saw three white shirts at the back post and moved the ball back across his body and on to his right foot. He looked up again. The cross to the back twig was on, only Ayoze had another plan. Sensing Irureta, like everyone else, was expecting the cross, he stole a yard on Albentosa and, at pace, curled the ball around the defender, past the outstretched glove and into the pigeon hole. It was Ronaldo-esq.
Ayoze stretched out his arms, milked the applause and the standing ovation. Even the Eibar players gave him a clap. Tenerife chairman Miguel Conception says there has been no “official” bid for Ayoze. But even if there were, the price will have gone north after this. While the team are improving fast and the confidence is flowing, in many ways it’s all down to a cheeky teenager, who has the world at his talented feet. Canarian Weekly ratings CD Tenerife: Roberto 7, Javi Moyano 6, Bruno 5 (Ros 23min 9), Carlos Ruiz 7, Raúl Cámara 7, Cristo Martin 7, Suso 7, Aitor Sanz 7, Ayoze 9, Borja 7 (Guillem 76min 5), Rivero 7 (Ricardo 61min 6). SD Eibar: Irureta 6, Albentosa 6, Capa 5 (Urko Vera 46min 6), Eizmendi 6 (Gilvan Gomes 77min), Dani García 5, Yuri 5, Lillo 7, Morales 6, Rivas6 (Jota 70min 6) Raúl Navas 6, Arruabarrena 7. The match was always fiery and there were some “afters” in the tunnel. Suso, who is like a Jack Russell mixed with an annoyed stout, was sent off. But this week the card was rescinded and he is eligible for Sunday’s trip to Numancia. Mind you, the way Suso travels, I’m
not sure he will play anyway. The game sees CDT facing two old boys who fans have made the butt of their anger after the relegation season. Julio Alvarez and Natalio were brought in with big contracts and reputations. To say they were a disaster is an understatement. They were a disgrace. They quickly returned to Numancia, where they are Gods. All football fans know what is coming on Sunday… This week I want to mention “Division 4”, which is an all-Canarian sector. And CD Tenerife’s B team have made a brilliant start. They have a Briton among their ranks, Jordan McCourt, who is having a fine season, and we will have an interview with him very soon. CD Marino were relegated last season and they are looking to bounce back. They have had a sticky few weeks after a fast start, and both sides will certainly be in the promotion mix in June. Finally, Tenerife’s greatly-anticipated derby with Las Palmas will be played in Santa Cruz on 4th December, with an 8pm kick-off. Yet both clubs had agreed to stage the match on Thursday the 5th, with a 9pm start. Only in Spain…

Greens in the pink over Reds! AFTER 20 rounds of league matches, the last unbeaten record has finally fallen.
at Gaffers B, who put six past Marilyns. Chipeque also hit six at Amistad 1, and Barracuda Bytes took the last leg to tie with Naughty Nautas. Bar 180 B and Bar 180 C swapped places for the umpteenth time, the B string winning at Summerlands, and the C team going down at Trap Door. Joy of joys, and many congratulations to Division 2’s all-girl team Ourplace Playgirls. Why? Well, they didn’t lose! Although they nearly did, nicking the trebles leg to finish 4-4 with Sundowners.
And it may well have an impact at the top of Division 1 come the end of the season. Long-time leaders Rood came unstuck at Emerald Lounge, who put in a fine night’s work to claim a 6-2 victory. The Green boys are just three points off third spot with a game in hand, while the Reds will be looking nervously over their shoulders PRemier division ResultS
Phoenix Flights enjoyed a great night in the company of Paul and Anita and the Picasso’s gang, and this match also ended in stalemate as the visitors claimed the last rubber. A 6-2 win at The Rebels for Emerald Shamrocks allowed Tenerife Sun to increase their lead by one point as they thumped Barracuda Hunters 7-1. Aptly-named Los Abrigos team Pas O Nadas are certainly not out of the running for a top-three finish, and they did their chances
no harm at all as they beat Bar 180 D. There was no doubting that the big match of the night in the Premier League was at Bar 170! Sorry, I mean Palms Sports Bar! After Daniel and his lads knocked Phoenix out of the cup last week, a home win looked oddson. Palms looked to be well out of sorts on the night, though, and Phoenix took an early 2-0 lead as Mitch beat Mally, and chairman Harry claimed a scalp as he beat Daniel (he told me to say that!). At 3-3, Mitch and
Tim took the second doubles, then Harry, London and Mitch just nicked the trebles for a hard-fought win. Harry’s nonchalant double 5 was the winning dart (he also told me to say that). Another cracking match, and another surprise result came at Bar 180 A as they entertained La Caña Pirates. Home team bossman Richard was in top form with a maximum and a 13-dart leg, and the 180 boys shot into a 4-0 lead. Somehow, the Pirates clawed a couple of legs back to put some pres-

sure on and then, amazingly, they completed a stunning comeback to square the match at 4-4. Nathan hit a 180 for the Naturals, and Nick did likewise for Our Place during another drawn match. And Pete hit one for fifth-placed The Pub, as they drew with fourthplaced Target Army. Danny struck his second 180 for the Vikings in a 5-3 win over the Playboys, while the only comfortable winners in this section were Target Titans. They cruised to a 6-2 success at Scruffy Macs.

Spain supporters feeling blue! Spain have launched their new kit ahead of their defence of the World Cup and the new outift is highly controversial.
For the first team in 100 years Spain will play in an all red strip as the traditional blue shorts have been axed. The jersey also has very little yellow and many
fans are annoyed. Media outlets have been swamped with comments from angry fans and the Spanish media have also gone to town over this. “We are Spain not Turkey” was one memorable headline. The World and European champions will debut the new strip this weekend when they play a controversial friendly in Equatorial Guinea. The players are said to be con-

cerned that they will be photographed with Dictator Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo who is the country’s President. Human Rights groups in Spain have called for the match to be boycotted. The match in the former Spanish territory is the latest in a string of games in far flung places as Spain ‘Do A Brazil’ and parade around the globe.

Hammers strike another blow THIS week saw a reversal of last week’s fixtures, and an opportunity for revenge in a few of the games.
But it was another week, another win for Tenerife Hammers A at the top of the First Division. They went 4-0 up against Toscales but then had a little wobble, the scores coming back to 4-3. But an inspired Fritzel steadied the ship, and the Hammers then went through the gears to finish 9-3 winners. The question now is whether they can be beaten, or will they go the whole season and become the “Invincibles”, although they won’t like the comparison! Gaffers A kept up the chase, dispatching the Terrace Suicide Squad 10-2 in a repeat of last week’s result. Terrace captain Adi was the only team member to actually win a game fair and square - Gaffers’ Ash beat himself in some style in the other dropped game. La Caña A are sitting pretty in third place
after squeezing past Inn the Pink, but Phoenix Knights couldn’t ease past them after being knocked out of the tree at the Treehouse. At the other end of the table, Dreamers A got revenge over Tenerife Hammers C and moved above them. The Peacocks had their feathers ruffled by Exiles A and the Phoenix Potters (sponsored by Werthers Originals) got the better of Palms A after last week’s stalemate. They took a 3-1 lead and got to 6-2 before the Palms came back at them, getting close at 6-5. But Roger held his nerve to take the 12th and deciding frame to give the Potters all three points. Pete was excellent for the Palms, but Pod and Paul Messent were also in fine form for the Potters. In the Second Division, table-toppers James Place got the better of Bar 13, who could have gone level on points had they won. It started off close with the scores poised at 2-2, but Bar 13’s unlucky number kicked in and they were left to rue their bad luck as James Place won

Hoppys Bar and Exiles B are still hanging on to the coat-tails of the top four, recording 8-4 and 10-2 wins against Bar La Caña B and Next Door Bar respectively. At the bottom, Cosy Corner B tried to get their first points on the board against fellowstrugglers Picasso’s A. But it wasn’t to be,
the impressive Picassos emerging 10-2 winners. Shorty’s, who are also down there, gave a good account of themselves against mid-table Toscales B but came up slightly short, losing 7-5. But Tenerife Pool Tables continued their climb with a solid victory against Gaffers C. Terrace Bar B must have wondered where they were, with fixtures on Tuesday night against Bluebell B, then Wednesday night against Bluebell A. They managed to come out the other side, though, with just a point, losing 7-5

Fantasy Football League Sometimes it is tough to be a football manager, even in a fantasy league and with the past weekend’s results, many of the managers in the Oasis Fm Fantasy League will be Page 54
scratching their heads over under performing players!
Unless of course you have Luis Suarez who once again was the weekend’s top point scorer with 16 or 32 if you had him as captain! Love him or hate him, he keeps adds bite to your team, grabbing goals and points.
The actual team of the week makes interesting reading in terms of the teams which the top point scorers come from, it is made up with a Newcastle player, 2 from Sunderland, 1 from Chelsea, 2 from Southampton, 1 from Aston Villa, 1 from Swansea and 3 from Liverpool. I think that is a reflective team from the weekend’s re-
sults and shows just how open this year’s league is. Going into the international break, the teams at the top didn’t really shine this week and it was one of the lower placed teams that outshone everybody, so team of the week goes to Michael Brookshaw with his ‘Stroppy Brats’ who scored 81 points.

By Adi Benson THE Premier League is often described as the most exciting league in the world, and after last weekend’s games I wouldn’t argue much.
It might not be the most technical or skilful, but, for pure drama, it is right up there! There are no matches this weekend, but more on that in a moment. Last weekend, the form book was turned on its head, ripped up and set ablaze! One or two teams stepped up to the plate and, maybe, got their seasons back on track. Aston Villa had been struggling in front of goal, yet they put Cardiff to the sword. I expected more from Cardiff after their derby win at Swansea but, Villa got the job done. Also getting the job done were Norwich, who have kept Chris Hughton in his job a little longer - and may have cause Big Sam at West Ham some sleepless nights! Southampton continued their impressive form, proving too strong for Hull and moving themselves up to third in the table. Rock-bottom Crystal Palace managed a draw against high-flying Everton but are still holding the table up. Liverpool dumped Fulham into the relegation places with the type of assured performance lacking against supposedly weaker opposition in recent seasons. Who would have thought, though, that the most exciting game of the weekend would be Swansea against Stoke? On paper, it looked uninspiring. But what a game, with six goals, a controversial late penalty and points shared. What, then, of the supposed Big Five? Well Spurs went down at home against Newcas-
Premier’s top on pure drama
tle, and it is not often you can say a team were beaten by a goalkeeper. But Tim Krul was in the form of his life, denying them at every turn. Man City dropped points away at Sunderland, who were value for their win. Could Gus Poyet achieve mission impossible and keep them up? Then we come to Man Utd and Arsenal: one team not firing on all cylinders and the other top of the league, so I was expecting a bloodand-guts encounter. But this was insipid and dull, although it has made the title race that bit more interesting. For a long time, it looked as though Chelsea would lose for the second week in a row until Ramires won his side a late, late penalty. I won’t go on and on about diving because, since the introduction of more foreign players to our league, it has become part of the game. It is not nice, and it makes life difficult for referees. They are not always in the right place, and nor do they get the help needed from linesmen. The best way to stop this is to have review
15th November - 21st November 2013
panel after the game. The result cannot be changed, but players could receive a retrospective ban for diving, which should deter them. Chelsea got their point, but what is interesting that Mourinho has 21 points after 11 games, and Rafa Benitez had the same statistics! Maybe the Special One isn’t that special any more. Two legends collide only one will survive I N T E R N AT I O N A L football is back this weekend, and for England it’s a couple of friendlies. Some argue that these games are a waste of time, and sometimes I would agree. But this time around, England have at least one good test against the old foe, Germany, once we have warmed
up against Chile. With the build-up beginning for Brazil 2014, these friendly games give Roy Hodgson the chance to experiment and have a look at players, I would love to see him take a young squad because, let’s face it, we are not going to win this World Cup. So get the youngsters in and give them tournament experience in preparation for Euro 2016. What is worth noting is that Hodgson is prepared to name squads based on form, as opposed to reputation. And that has been nicely highlighted by his choice of three Southampton players: Adam Lallana, Jay Rodriguez and Rickie Lambert, who have all made a great start to the season. Other than that, the squad is pretty much the same as the one who faced Montenegro in the final qualifying game. The Chile game tonight (Friday) gives Hodgson an ideal chance to bring these three in at some point. But I suspect he will field an experienced team against the Germans on Tuesday night. We know that cap-
tain Steven Gerrard is missing through injury, and Frank Lampard is struggling with a virus. This may give Jordan Henderson the opportunity to try to replicate his club form this season for his country. The big decision will be the goalkeeper choice. Joe Hart has served England well, but his form has been well below par, culminating in him losing his Manchester City place. If Hart is “rested”, then uncapped Fraser Forster, in fine form for Celtic this season, will surely get the nod. We have played Chile five times and lost just once. But they are an improving, attacking side who will provide a decent test. Then, of course, comes Germany and memories of England’s 5-1 victory in their backyard. Wouldn’t it be sweet to beat them at Wembley. Again! It’s comforting for England fans to enjoy these friendlies, safe in the knowledge that we have already qualified for the World Cup. But fans from 22 countries are still biting their nails and approaching this weekend with some trepidation because it’s
Play-Off time! There are 11 places still up for grabs, with eight European teams, 10 African nations and four globetrotting countries all in the mix. Normally, these matches wouldn’t be under the spotlight as much, but there are some interesting fixtures. One in particular will leave one of football’s big names missing the biggest stage. The game on everybody’s lips is Portugal v Sweden, or rather, Ronaldo v Ibrahimović! It seems strange that one of these players will miss out, but you have to do the business in the qualifying groups and neither team did. I have a feeling Sweden will progress. I did have an idea about this topic: FIFA should keep a spot free and, once qualifying is over, they could fill it with a squad of players whose countries didn’t qualify. That way, the best players would not miss out. And it would be interesting to see whether this mixture could actually gel together. In the other games, France could be another big fish to miss out in a tough two-leg fixture against Ukraine. And Iceland, should they beat Croatia, would be the smallest nation (population wise) to play in the World Cup finals. Jordan’s hopes are already over because they lost 5-0 at home to Uruguay on Wednesday. And New Zealand will need a similar miracle after being stuffed 5-1 in Mexico. THE LINE-UP (over two legs) Iceland v Croatia Ukraine v France Portugal v Sweden Greece v Romania Mexico v New Zealand Jordan v Uruguay Nigeria v Ethiopia Senegal v Ivory Coast Cameroon v Tunisia Egypt v Ghana Algeria v Burkina Faso
