New President New Promises THIS week, the non-Spanish media had their first meeting with Carlos Alonso, new president of the Tenerife Cabildo.

He has been a councillor since 2007 and a Vice-President for the last two years. And he was heavily involved in the tourism sector until getting the top job a few months ago. The 43-year-old Cabildo chief speaks good English and is a measured politician, comfortable taking open questions. The beard and the greying hair make him look older than his years, but he has the energy of youth, and there is no doubt that he means business. When he spoke to the Canarian Weekly, he was very honest about his key priority: “Unemployment,” he said. “I want to be remembered as a man who has done something important for these islands. “There are some things we have to do, but I will concentrate on the unemployment rate, which is spectacular. It’s something that is not sustainable in the long term.” The latest official figures show a mammoth 284,000 people are unemployed in Tenerife, which is around 37% of

the working population - and that figure is rising. “It’s the key goal for 2014, to get the unemployment figure down,” said Alonso. “If we can have a good year on that, then we will have had a good year.” He is well-seasoned and well-travelled. A graduate of Business studies and economics from the University of La Laguna, he has a Masters in European studies from Bruges college. Alonso also knows his way around the balance sheet, and this gives him a great start in his quest to sort out the finances and the dole queue! But he has had a helping hand. He admits that he takes over in good shape after work by his predecessor, Ricardo Melchior. “We have a very important community of great people here on our Island,” he said. “I think they have been able to direct us in the right way for a long period. We have a lot of things to do together to increase the economic activity, and the opportunities we can offer. “Not just for us, but for those who want to visit us. I want the British community to work with us. “We have several projects working on the Island, and we will increase these to help

“New hospital ‘will be completed’ next year” with income and unemployment activities.” While Alonso has his eye on the finances and the unemployed, he was a little shaky on the thorny subject of all-inclusive hotels, and the way they are affecting the community. We put it to him that many bars, restaurants and shop-owners were unhappy and concerned. And while he understood the concerns, he felt the situation was under control. “The difference in opinion of what people (holiday-makers) want is not so clear in terms of what they want to do on the Island,” he said. “The figures on what the consumption and spend is on the Island is not really different.” He believes that the amount of money spent by holiday-makers is the same, whether they are all-inclusive or “normal” hotel. The Cabildo President added: “The difference

is not so clear in terms of the level of consumption. What we and the tourist board is trying to do is increase the quality and the diversity that we can offer - restaurants, tourists places, sports and so on.” When Canarian Weekly pushed him on whether he was happy with the levels of all-inclusive hotels, compared with “regular” hotels, he was crystal clear. He stressed: “For the moment. Yes. We have to offer a destination for everybody. There are people who want to go all-inclusive. There are people who want to go on cruises which are all-inclusive. “But we are a family destination, so we have to offer many kinds of products to the tourists. What we have to do is increase our competition as a destination.” Controversial stuff! He was clearer on the subject of cruise ships,

with Santa Cruz enjoying the benefits from the cruise boom. “Cruising holidaymakers are one-day tourists and the stats say that 70% return to Tenerife,” he said. “We have more excursions than other destinations - as many as 40 - and this makes the port of Santa Cruz one of the most profitable ports. “At the moment it’s not best for us to improve the port, but we are looking to do this for 2015. And we are looking at the infrastructure. We will continue the work to help make a new traffic system around the port. “Also, we are going to work on the landscape of the capital as well, and I think it will be affordable for us to start this next year.” Alonso is only the 29th Cabildo President, and only the third since 1987. It will take time for him to make his mark and, of course, try to please everybody,

two years before the next election. He is fully aware of the new markets open to Tenerife. This week, he signed a new flight agreement with Morocco that will see a sharp increase in travel with our nearest continent. “I will try and open the Islands to new tourists,” he pledged. “Africa, for example, is a place that has plenty of opportunities.” He says he is enjoying the job, thriving off the responsibility and, after solving the transport strike last week, one he is getting results in. “We have to hit these new responsibilities with a passion, and with a lot of time to put in place these new ideas,” he said. “We have been talking about the need for having a new perspective, and a new politician in this position, so it’s time to have new ideas put in place.” New ideas, new approach, new man. We wish him well!

CARLOS ALONSO has pledged that the longstanding hospital project in the South will be completed next year. “The work will start this month,” he said. “The project will be mobilised this month and the infrastructure will be in place. “We have built 80% of this project and now, we need to get the other section built as quickly as we can.” He added: “The finishing responsibility now lies with us, the Cabildo, and we’ll start this now and have it finished in October 2014.” It is a bold target, but one the President feels is realistic.

Misery of Brits behind bars over drug-related offences

HUNDREDS of British nationals are locked up in prisons throughout the world for drug-related offences.

They are often detained for months without trial, having to contend with distressing living conditions. In Spain, consular staff dealt with over 100 drug-related arrests last year alone. And these offences account for about three-quarters of the 172 Brits currently on remand or serving sentences there. Now, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), in conjunction with the charity Prisoners Abroad, is launching a campaign to highlight the consequences of the use, possession and smuggling of drugs in Spain and other countries around the world. The zero-tolerance approach of some countries often results in strict penalties, which can come as a shock to British travellers. In Spain, offenders may, in some circumstances, be held on remand for over a year before their trial. Even if released on bail, they are unable to leave the country. Offences that may carry cautions in the UK are often penalised with long prison sentences overseas. Some drug crimes can lead to even more severe penalties, and 33 countries or territories enforce death sentences. In Spain, sentences can be as long as 20 years in the case of hard drugs, and up to six years and nine months for soft drugs, with fines of up to six times the value of the drugs. Prisoners Abroad is currently supporting 84 Britons between the ages of 18 and 30, who are being held in foreign countries for drugs offences, and 62 are yet to face a trial. The charity provides support for Britons imprisoned overseas and

Page 4

their families in the UK. It is currently supporting over 1,200 prisoners in 80 countries across five continents. Here in Spain, including Tenerife, the consequences of being detained for a drugs offence can be devastating, Will Middleton, Consular Director for Spain, said: “Being sent to prison overseas, away from family and friends, is very distressing, and even more so if you don’t speak the language. “We see people of all ages, from youngsters through to pensioners, who have lost their friends and their jobs. “They have had to give up their studies, or had their children taken into care, and got into major financial difficulties because they did not think they would get caught.” He added: “In the last year alone, consular staff in Spain handled over 100 drug-related cases. If you or someone you know is involved in the illegal drugs trade, then the message is clear: the

consequences are simply not worth it.” Terry Daniels (pictured) and Billy Burton are British nationals who spent valuable years of their life in

prisons overseas. Terry was sentenced by a Spanish court to 10 years for drugsmuggling on the basis of guilt by association, while Billy was charged

with smuggling marijuana out of the Philippines. Both want to see the number of Britons involved in drugs in other countries reduced, and they have described their experiences in a video to warn others not to make their mistakes. Terry was accused of smuggling cocaine worth £1million from Brazil to Spain in 1997. She had been working in Brazil with her boss, a nightclub manager, and was travelling back to Spain with him when he was caught with the drugs in his suitcase. Terry maintains her innocence, saying she had no idea he was carrying the drugs. But a Spanish court prosecuted her on the basis of guilt by association. She served six days in prison before being granted bail, when she then returned to the UK. A number of years passed and it appeared that the Spanish authorities had dropped the case. However, while living in Ireland in 2002, a police check revealed that she was still wanted in Spain.

She had been prosecuted in her absence and her 10-year prison was still outstanding. In June 2003, she was arrested on an international extradition warrant, flown back to Spain and imprisoned in one of the country’s toughest mixed jails, where she stayed for 19 months. She was then given permission to serve the remainder of her reduced sentence in the UK. Terry says: “I will always love Spain and know that holidaymakers and expats alike have a great time there. “But I would urge people not to get involved in drugs, not even recreational drug use, which many may see as harmless. “I got involved with drugs at a young age and paid the consequences. I ended up in Topas Prison and everything in my life changed. It is not worth the risk.” She now undertakes charity work on behalf of Fair Trials International and Prisoners Abroad and has recently published a book, Passport to Hell.

Adeje plans to stamp out domestic violence ADEJE Council, concerned at the volume of domestic violence in the municipality and elsewhere, is sending out a clear message to men who think nothing of battering their partners.

The Council’s slogan says NO to Domestic Violence, and it will host a range of activities on Monday (25th Nov), the official International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women The programme, which will then run to the end of the month, spells out a positive message of help and support for women who find themselves at risk. Leaflets will also be distributed to people in general, outlining what action should be taken if they are aware of an existing, or potential, domestic violence situation. Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz, Adeje’s Equality Councillor, says: “With this programme, we hope that society can begin to better understand that domestic violence is a contemptible act that must be totally eradicated from our society. “To make that possible, it is essential that women understand that YES, there is help and they are not alone.” The programme has the support of Amada

Trujillo Bencomo, Adeje Councillor for Social Welfare, with both departments working side by side to rid society of this appalling form of violence. Becomo says: “This is a problem within our society which affects many women. They need to report this kind of suffering because you cannot compromise within a domestic violent situation. “Society, too, needs to learn not to ignore the reality; our mission is the protection of victims of domestic violence so that they can move away from the risk situation they are in.” He adds: “Our programme features the increasing use of social

agencies, simply because we cannot leave any women at the mercy of this scourge.” Monday’s events start at 10am, with an informal information session and distribution of ribbons by the Asociación Mujeres de Blanco por la Igualdad (Association of Women in White for Equality) and the Asociación de Mujeres Tara Condesa (an Adeje-based group working for equality). At midday, there will be a public one minute of silence on the steps of the Town Hall to remember all the victims of domestic violence, and a reading of the council’s manifesto. Everyone is welcome to join in.

Then, in the evening from 7pm, there will be a ceremony hand-

ing out prizes for the top three Short Stories about Domestic

Violence competition. The winner is Aída Méndez García, from IES Adeje II, with her entry Mi decisión. Runner-up is María Lucía Sepe, Colegio Costa Adeje with Recordar el dolor, and third prize goes to Sara Lorenzo Díaz, Colegio Costa Adeje, who wrote Todo por un despiste. Following the prizegiving, an exhibition of art against domestic violence by secondaryschool students will take place. Throughout the month, until 5th December, the project “Living Equally” is taking place. Its aim is to improve the lifestyles of couples living together, using a series of activities in the borough’s schools which, teach about non-violence and equality on a dayto day-basis.

More Gibraltar Gip from Spain BRITAIN’S Foreign Office summoned the Spanish ambassador for crisis talks this week following the arrival of another Spanish ship off the coast of Gibraltar.

The Royal Navy challenged the state vessel RV Romon Margalef after it had conducted more than 20 hours of surveying on Monday and Tuesday. The Foreign Office said the ship’s presence had

been a “significant incursion” and had raised “serious concerns”. The FO also complained of “unacceptable” border delays by customs. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said the Spanish vessel had come within 250 metres of the entrance to Gibraltar Harbour and had been close to other ships anchored there. It prompted the Royal Navy Gibraltar Squadron to send two speedy patrol boats to challenge its presence. On Tuesday, Matthew

Rycroft, acting permanent under-secretary at the Foreign Office, met Federico Trillo, Spanish ambassador to the UK, to discuss the incident. It is the third time the Spanish ambassador has been summoned publicly over the conduct of Spain towards Gibraltar since Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s government took office in December 2011. During the meeting, Mr Rycroft also raised the border delays which, the Foreign Office said, continue to affect Gi-

braltarians and tourists, as well as large numbers of Spanish commuters working in Gibraltar, on a “near-daily” basis. David Lidington, UK Minister for Europe, has told MPs that Britain has made repeated diplomatic protests over incursions in recent months. He said Spain had increased unlawful incursions by its state vessels into UK territorial waters from about five per month to about 40. “We stand ready to do whatever is required to protect Gibraltar’s sovereignty, economy and

security,” said Mr Lidington. “We believe that it is in the interests of Spain, Gibraltar and Britain to avoid incidents such as these, which damage the prospects of establishing dialogue and cooperation.” The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea states that the waters around Gibraltar are indisputably British territory. However, Spain has for many years disputed the UK’s 300-year sovereignty over Gibraltar. By coincidence, Gibraltar marked their

San Miguel food fayre

historic debut as a member of UEFA on Tuesday with a remarkable result, holding Slovakia to a goalless draw in Portugal. Gibraltar, who had only ever played the likes of Greenland and the Isle of Wight, were accepted by European football’s governing body in May and will compete in the 2016 European Championship qualifiers. Spain were the only country to vote against the membership and some commentators believe the ship incident was timed to take the gloss off of Gibraltar’s big day.

Tapas is fun - and filling!

OVER the last month or so, everyone seems to have been talking about the various fayres taking place in some of the municipalities here in the South, and how good they are. So on Saturday, knowing San Miguel’s food fayre was being staged for the second night running - just up the hill from us - we decided to give it a try. Another decision was that because we tend to eat in Arona or Adeje most of the time, and, as we live in San Miguel, we felt it would be nice to find some decent eating establishments nearer home. And along the way, of course, tucking in to the different types of foods on offer. The idea of the food fayre is for people - locals and tourists - to sample small plates of the various foods (tapas) available from the participating restaurants and cafes, all located in the San Miguel

Page 6

municipality, along with different wines. It certainly wasn’t what I expected. I thought the fayre would be along the main road and, to be honest, would be a bit boring, but I was mistaken. One other thing that surprised me was the high number of non-Spanish people there. The event took place in the San Miguel Square, and there was a stage at one end with live music all night. The bar was in the middle, serving different types of red and white wines, soft drinks and beer, with the food stalls all around the perimeter. I don’t know why, but the whole night reminded me of the scene in the film Hitch, when he was at the “pay and cook your own dinner night”, except that I didn’t eat anything which gave me an allergic reaction. All in all, the evening turned out to be a thoroughly pleasant experi-

ence, and we will be back for more tasting sessions next year! Here are some of the tapas we enjoyed from the 17 participating restaurants. And yes, we were well fed and watered by the end of it. Expats face tax on sale of UK homes TENERIFE expats who sell their British homes for whatever reason could be facing capital gains tax.

Chancellor George Osborne is to announce that the tax will charged on all British properties sold by overseas nationals and expats. The Coalition plan was disclosed by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, who wants to ensure that wealthy foreigners buying and selling British property “pay their fair share”. However, the scheme will probably embrace those Britons classed as non-residents in the UK, who still own property there. Tax experts warned that the measures could have significant consequences for those Brits who go abroad to

22nd November - 28th November 2013

work while retaining UK property they may want to sell. The new measures are designed to burst the housing bubble being created by foreign buyers, who regard flats and houses, especially in London and the South East, as a safe investment. London house prices far outstrip inflation because of the fierce demand for prime property among wealthy global buyers, forcing many British families out of the market. More than £7  billion was spent on London properties last year by international investors. Mr Clegg stressed that the Coalition did not want to “pull up the drawbridge” on overseas investment. But he said it was vital that wealthy foreigners were not exempt from property taxes paid by Britons.

British home-owners currently have to pay capital gains tax if they make a profit when selling a property which is not their main residence. However, foreign investors such as the Russian

oligarchs and Middle Eastern oil billionaires, buying up UK homes, are exempt from tax on all properties. And for them, it makes London homes a particularly attractive option.

Canarian wages lagging behind IT has been revealed that Canarian workers are among the lowest paid in the whole of Spain, earning an average of just 1,614.45 euros per month. According to a report by staffing agency Randstad, the country’s wages have risen by an average 6.1% in the past five years, which is 1.7% points below the CPI (Consumer Price Index) increase in the

same period. The three Autonomous Communities on the lowest average monthly income are Galicia (1,675.99 euros), Cantabria (1,675.32) and Extremadura (1,603.56). At the other end of the scale, the biggest wage increases during the 2008-2013 period were dished out in Castilla -La Mancha (10%), Murcia (9.5%) and Madrid (8.6%).

Day that shook the world I REMEMBER it like it was yesterday, not 2003. It was 10am and I was in a pub in Bury. And I knew. I just KNEW that England were going to win the Rugby Union World Cup. Not just because I had backed them and that, to me, they were a better team than Australia. You see, today (Friday) is one of those days when historical events happen. Not just any old events, but those that people talk about for decades and centuries later. It was on this day in 1869 that the Cutty Sark was launched. In 1975, Juan Carlos is declared King of Spain after the death of Franco. In 1977, BA launches the Concorde service from London to New York, while in 1986, Mike Tyson destroys Trevor Berbick to become the youngest-ever heavyweight champion of the world. On this day in 1990, Margaret Thatcher withdraws from the Conservative party leadership elections, effectively resigning as Prime Minister. And in 2005, Angela Merkel became the first-

ever female leader of Germany. You see what I mean. Oh, and John F. Kennedy was, of course, assassinated 50 years ago today. That fateful shooting on Dealey Plaza is still dissected, discussed and argued about all over the world. I’ve read countless books on the subject and, when I was a young pup, I even wrote about the shooting in my coursework. “It’s a mystery wrapped in a riddle inside an enigma,” as Joe Pesci, playing David Ferrie, famously said in the Oscar-winning movie JFK.

Like the Jack the Ripper mystery, it’s something that will never be solved - and maybe that’s a good thing. History is the best predictor of the future and, if the generations to come continue to speculate, they will continue to ask the main question. It’s not really important who pulled the trigger. Or triggers. And only the naïve believe that Lee Harvey Oswald was a lone shooter, if, indeed, he even fired a rifle that day at all. No, the real question is why? Why did Kennedy have to die? I’ll let you trawl the internet for a weekend, or read one of the thousands of books on offer. You don’t need my theory; make your own conclusions. But what I do know, and what is a fact, is this: Kennedy would not have gone to war in Vietnam. We can only imagine how the world would have turned out if the events in Dallas had never happened. And therein lies the fascination with the slaying. Every generation have their fallen heroes. What would John Lennon or Kurt Cobain have produced? How great would James Dean, River Phoenix or Heath Ledger have become? And what of Duncan Edwards? Kennedy electrified a country, dazzled the world and was a calming influence in troubled times. If he had served another five years? Who knows? Tony Blair is judged on his later, disastrous years rather than his stunning start. November 23rd 1963 is the most famous day of the 20th Century. And my father’s 18th birthday!

Friends we have lost...

The British community lost two well loved and respected figures this week. In the last issue of the Canarian Weekly we brought you news of a fund raiser for musician Steve Powell. Lasy Sunday’s event at the Drunken Duck was a massive success but sadly Steve past away on Wednesday morning. Steve had spent many years here playing at various bars but will be best remembered for his partnership with Terry as ‘Two Risky’ at the Drunken Duck in the Patch.

In the early hours of Saturday morning popular Los Cristianos resident John Martin aka AV, died of a heart attack. He spent the last five years battling leukemia and ironically John had just returned to Tenerife after doctors confirmed he was in remission. When he was younger AV was a pro footballer. He turned out for Aston Villa (thus his nickname), Colchester, Workington, Southport & Wigan. In his Tenerife years he would trade on the markets and place the odd bet! His funeral is today (Friday) at the church opposite the Green Clinic at 10:30am with a wake at Sandy’s Bar from 3pm.

Black widow’s killing spree A WOMAN stunned an Old Bailey court on Monday by admitting to being a serial killer.

To the astonishment of the defence counsel, Joanna Dennehy pleaded guilty to murdering three men and attempting to kill two others. Joanna Dennehy admitted killing Kevin Lee, 48, Lukasz Slaboszewski, 31, and John Chapman, 56, and dumping their bodies in ditches. They were found with multiple stab wounds between March and April in Cambridgeshire. The 31-year-old Dennehy, from Bifield, Peterborough, also pleaded guilty to the attempted murders of Robin Bereza and John Rogers. The pleas rocked her defence barrister Nigel Lickley QC, who excpted her to plead not guilty. He told the court: “The course is not one I had

anticipated. We ask for more time, given what has just occurred.” But Dennehy, who sat in the dock of court, said she did not want to talk to anyone and added: “I have pleaded guilty and that’s it.” She even interrupted her counsel, saying: “I’m not coming back down here again just to say the same stuff. It’s a long way to come to say the same thing I have just said.” She also pleaded guilty to three counts of preventing the lawful burial of all three murder victims. Her partner, 7ft 3in tall Gary Stretch, 57, denied the two attempted murders and helping Den-

nehy to dump the three bodies. Leslie Layton, 47, and Robert Moore, 55, had previously denied helping to cover up the alleged murders, and harbouring Stretch and Dennehy when they were wanted by police. Dennehy pleaded guilty to three counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and three counts of preventing a lawful burial. Stretch, of Orton Goldhay, Peterborough, denied two counts of attempted murder and three counts of preventing a lawful burial. Layton, also of Bifield, denied two counts of preventing a lawful burial and one charge of perverting the course of justice. Moore, of Peterborough, denied two counts of assisting an offender. On their previous court appearance, a provisional trial date was set for 14th January next year and meanwhile, they are all in custody.

Aid for struggling families in Adeje THE Spanish Red Cross and Adeje Council have joined forces to hand out personal hygiene kits to 70 local families.

The hard-up Adeje folk benefited from signing up for the Spanish Red Cross assistance programme, in conjunction with the council.

The kits contained products for families, catering for babies, women and men, as well as domestic cleaning materials. Overseeing the handover, at Adeje Cultural Centre, was Social Welfare Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo, along with some Red Cross volunteers. The councillor thanked the Red Cross, a non-governmen-

tal organisation, for their social-assistance programmes in Adeje. She added: “These kits are very helpful for those receiving them, and Adeje Council will continue to work in tandem with the Red Cross. “These kinds of assistance programmes are of great benefit to the most vulnerable sections of society.”

It’s a Hull of a cultural shock! Protesters grin and bare them! FIVE topless activists from the feminist movement Femen were held by Madrid’s National police after attempting to sabotage an anti-abortion march.

The women, who had pro-abortion messages scribbled on their chests, were detained overnight. But their protests paid off because it earned them national and in-

Page 12

ternational attention. Their slogans read, among other things, “My body, my rules” and “Abortion is sacred”. Thousands had marched in Madrid on Sunday in protest at abortion laws, but the Femen movement believes in pro choice. The group’s popularity has risen dramatically as the topless protests sweep across Europe. The women have even made the front pages following recent, high-profile demonstrations in Russia and the Ukraine.

WHAT a turnup for the books. Hull, once branded Britain’s most depressing place to live, will be the next City of Culture.

The elated city, renowned for its fishing port, and for being the home of poet Philip Larkin, the Ferens gallery and the Truck theatre, will take over from Londonderry in 2017.

The UK Government chooses a new destination every four years, with the express intention of helping tourism and the economy. Hull Council leader Stephen Brady, knowing what a huge boost to the city the title will provide, said: “This is a real game-changer. “Never again will Hull have the reputation that some people have put on it in the past.” Television producer Phil Redmond, who chaired the City of Culture panel, insisted the

East Yorkshire city was the unanimous choice, saying: “It put forward the most compelling case based on its theme as ‘a city coming out of the shadows’. “This is at the heart of their project, and it reminds its people, and the wider world, of both its cultural past and future potential.” Culture Secretary Maria Miller said: “Hull deserved to win. The award can prompt a wonderful mixture of investment and civic pride.”

Londonderry has seen visitor numbers double this year, and has gained investment worth £120 million. A statement from Hull City Council said: “Inspired by Larkin’s poem Days, the ambition is for each day of Hull 2017 to make a difference to a life in the city, the UK and the world.” The Council also expects a £60m boost to the local economy in 2017 alone, as well as a longer-term legacy for the city.

Baby meerkats delight Loro Parque’s visitors LORO PARQUE staff are celebrating an explosion of new life in one of the leading tourist attractions in Tenerife.

Three new-born meerkats lead the way and, together with Rocky the sea lion, the Bambu sharks and various species of parrots, there has been a colourful expansion of animals in our award-winning zoo. The meerkats, now numbering seven since their introduction to the park nearly three years ago, are fascinating mammals, also known as “rock cats”. They stand out for their busy-busy lifestyle as they play together in groups, under the watchful eye of an adult. After two months of pregnancy, the three

22nd November - 28th November 2013

births developed normally and outside help from vets or keepers was not necessary. The babies are fed by the mother and, together with the rest of the group, they enjoy the sun, dig holes in the ground and generally entertain visitors - especially the Brits, who will recognise the meerkat family because they feature at the start and finish of every Coronation Street episode. The meerkat descends from the mongoose family and lives in the Kalahari and Namib deserts Namib in Africa. It is a small mammal, under a foot tall and weighing up to a kilo. Also, it tends to stand upright on its back legs on guard, looking for prey - or to avoid being chased by predators. T They are carnivores, feasting on insects and spiders, and other small mammals. They always

hunt together, protecting their young fiercely. Meerkats are usually sympathetic and delicate animals, so that children, in particular, love their show, devised by Loro Parque especially for them These animals are reminiscent of the familiar figures from Disney’s famous “The Lion King” film. People sometimes keep meerkats as household pets in their native surroundings. But they are not considered as suitable pets in the West be-

cause their behaviour is extremely destructive. In fact owning meerkats, as well as other wild animals, is against the law in many countries. Diverse species of creatures, relating to water, land and air, have filled the park’s nurseries in recent months, which indicate just how much the Loro Parque inhabitants enjoy its various eco-systems. And how much the public enjoy the park’s dedication to its inhabitants.

Reading residents relishing the best! RE S I DE N T S of Reading who make the daily trip to London are living in the best UK place of all.

But try telling them after they’ve stood all the way to London in a rush-hour train as they make their way to work. The Berkshire town stands alongside Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Southampton as one of the most attractive places to live in a report from Price Waterhouse Coopers and Demos, Britain’s leading cross-party thinktank. It defies the longheld belief that Britain’s largest cities, or its Home Counties’ countryside, have the highest standard of living because of their wealth prospects, infrastructure and public resources. Reading, says the re-

port, has the right mix of jobs, the least income inequality of all and plenty of affordable housing. Those qualities, plus a number of other factors, make it among the best places to live, according to PwC/ Demos. It also shows provincial cities around the country outshining the largest urban areas for economic success and, crucially, according to measures of health of the population, the availability of jobs, housing affordability, income inequality and general work-life balance. Solihull comes top in the “Standard of Living League”, while Scottish towns fare worst. In terms of economic size only, London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds are tops. But the PwC/Demos report finds that London today is one of the worse places in Britain to live. While

the capital boasts Oxford Street, West End theatres and restaurants, it also has among the worst income inequality in the country, overpriced housing and an ancient transport infrastructure. Other cities ranking lowest on the PwC scale were Middlesbrough, Stockton and Swansea, mainly through of a lack of jobs and lower incomes. But, unlike London, the same cities scored comparatively well on housing affordability and work-life balance. The picture within London is also rather complex as some inner-city boroughs, including Newham and Tower Hamlets, score poorly, compared with the national average. But outer boroughs such as Redbridge and Kingston- on-Thames score higher than average.

Safety charity puts Brake on drivers using mobile phones ROAD - SAFETY group Brake has launched a campaign against motorists using mobile phones when driving, even with hands-free systems.

In a move supported by the Association of Chief Police Officers, the charity is calling on drivers to turn off their phones - or put them in the boot to avoid temptation. The organisation is also urging people to refuse to speak on the phone to someone driving. At the start of Road Safety Week on Monday, Brake released new figures showing that 575,000 drivers have points on their licences for using a mobile at the wheel, or being otherwise distracted. And of these, 6.5% have totted

Page 14

up six points or more. The figures also reveal that 62% of children in the 7-11 age bracket report having been driven by someone talking on a phone, and 79% have spotted drivers on mobiles outside their school or home. Brake also highlighted research showing that mobile-phone use while driving, along with eating, drinking and smoking, does increase the risk of an accident. Julie Townsend, Deputy Chief Executive of the charity, said: “We’re living in an age when being constantly connected is the norm. More and more of us have a smartphone, and we find it hard to switch off, even for a minute. “While there are enormous benefits with this new technology, it’s also posing dangerous temptations to drivers to divert their concentration away from the critical task at hand,

often putting our most vulnerable road-users in danger.” She added: “Many people who wouldn’t dream of drink-driving are succumbing to using their phone and other distractions while driving, oblivious that the effect can be similar and the consequences just as horrific.” Road-Safety Minister Robert Goodwill said: “The UK has one of the best road-safety records in the world - and improving this record remains a top priority for the Government. “That is why we have increased fines for using a mobile at the wheel, and have made it easier for the police to tackle bad driving behaviour. And we are looking at how we can improve the safety of young drivers. “I welcome Brake’s Road Safety Week initiative, which helps raises awareness of the importance of road safety.”

Biscuits gone for a Burton! THE British biscuit company, which produces Wagon Wheels and Jammie Dodgers, has been sold for a reported £340m to a Canadian pension company.

That’s the same annual income racked up by Burton’s Biscuits, the country’s secondlargest biscuit manufacturer, with at least 2,200 people on its books around the UK. The deal involves the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan group, which has not yet revealed the actual amount it has paid out. Hertfordshire -based Burton’s, also responsible for Cadbury Fingers and Maryland Cookies, was founded to the mid1800s by George Burton. Until Monday, it owned manufacturing facilities in Edinburgh, Blackpool and Llantarnam, where the firm in-

vested £4.6m in July to “safeguard” the 800 jobs there. That took its spending to £7m since last year on the South Wales factory, where Jammie Dodgers are made. Burton’s also had a chocolate refinery in Moreton and a Liverpool central distribution hub, all owned now by the Canadian pension group. In recent

years, Ontario Teachers has developed a taste for British companies, buying up National Lottery operator Camelot and nursery chain Busy Bees. Burton’s is among several mid-sized British companies which have experienced several phases of private-equity ownership. In 2009, Apollo and Canadian bank CIBC

seized control of the company when Duke Street Capital, its previous owner, was forced to surrender control to the biscuit-maker’s lenders. Another private-equity group, HM Capital, had bought the company in 2000 from Associated British Foods, which owns the highlysuccessful Primark retail chain.

The Carnival Canarian Weekly Photo Challenge will have Last week’s best photo: Shirley Woollett Theme: making you smile cartoon feel PREPARATIONS are already well under way for the Carnival in Santa Cruz, even before we get to Christmas!

There was a Bollywood theme for 2013, and next year has the equally ambitious “Cartoons” theme. The poster this week reveals a cartoony character not too dissimilar to the “Aliens” one used for the London 2012 Olympiad. Next year’s extravaganza will, provisionally, start on 31st January and will run to 9th March. This will then be followed by the smaller carnivals in Puerto de la Cruz and Los Cristianos. There will be some changes, most notice-

Also, there is no news on how much will be spent on the event, but it will surely be less than 2013 as the Cabildo juggles a smaller budget. In years gone by, the Santa Cruz fiesta was described as the world’s second-largest carnival after Rio de Janiero. But while that may have been true a couple of decades ago, far bigger carnivals, with grander budgets and ambitions, have overtaken Tenerife celebrations.

Dodgy breastcancer surgeon has already cost the NHS £3m

A SURGEON who carried out hundreds of needless, unregulated procedures on women has been suspended from practising by the GMC since 2011.

And the NHS has already had to fork damages of over £3m to patients involved in the breast-cancer surgery scandal involving Ian Paterson. He was working for the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust when the incidents occurred. In total there are 503 claims, of which 135 are continuing claims and 285 relating to privatesector treatment. More than 1,000 women may have been affected by his surgery in both the private sector and the NHS. Admissions have been made in many other NHS cases and negotiations are ongoing. Some patients are deeply concerned about the potential for cancer to return in the residual breast tissue Mr Paterson left behind “for cosmetic reasons”. Gail Boichat, incorrectly diagnosed with breast cancer in 1995, is one example. She was told she should have a mastec-

tomy, but later learned that she’d never even had cancer, which she still finds hard to cope with. “My mind won’t let me be grateful that I’ve never had cancer because I’m trying to deal with this side of it,” she said. “I try to put it out of my head but I can’t.” Mr Paterson performed so-called “cleavage-sparing” mastectomies during breast removal, which left a small amount of tissue behind, Kashmir Uppal, from Birmingham solicitors Thompsons, a company representing nearly 400 patients, said that on the basis of the evidence from its medical expert, there was a link. He added: “We’ve had lots of clients who had the cleavage-sparing mastectomy originally. And a few years later, they’ve had a recurrence within the residual breast tissue, so those facts speak for themselves. “Some of these women are really struggling to cope with it all. They put their trust in him and the NHS and have been very badly let down.” Mr Paterson worked at Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield from 1993-1998, and at Solihull Hospital between 1998-2011, until

22nd November - 28th November 2013

he was suspended. He also worked privately for Spire Healthcare at Spire Little Aston Hospital from 1993 and Spire Parkway hospital from 1996. Nine years ago, an internal Solihull Hospital report highlighted the potential risk of “cleavage-sparing” procedures, but a review was not carried out until 2007. In December that year, Mr Paterson was told to stop performing the unregulated operations, but there is evidence that he carried on until at least 2010. An independent review carried out by Sir Ian Kennedy into Mr Paterson’s surgery for the NHS will be published in the next few weeks. Dr Mark Newbold, Chief Executive of the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust, said in a statement: “I would like to re-emphasise that, on behalf of the Trust, I very much regret what has happened to so many women, and our thoughts are with them and their families.” The police are investigating the entire incident and, at the same time, Dr Newbold has pledged to respond swiftly to Sir Ian Kennedy’s findings and recommendations.

Star-studded Festival ready to twinkle again WHO fancies a heady party at 2,000 metres high, with an all-star cast?

The Starmus Festival, especially for stargazers, is coming our way again next summer and will incorporate that special event, together with a host of other activities, Queen guitarist Brian May, now almost as well known for being a keen astrologist with firm, forthright views, is almost certain to return to the Island for the occasion. Brian, a regular visitor to Tenerife, and Teide

in particular, actually played at the 2011 Festival, and was a star attraction, alongside those magnificent US astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, plus many leading scientists. Mount Teide is Spain’s highest mountain, and the grand old lady of Tenerife keeps an eye on all parts of her domain, just as a shepherd watches over his flock. The volcano, and the lunar-type landscape surroundings of its protected National Park, is now acknowledged as one of the few Starlight Reserves in the world. It is a popular haunt

for serious stargazers on any night and Teide Observatory, which sits comfortably at 2,390m, will be open to visitors during the Starmus Festival. It will again feature science, music and the arts, and the variety of people attending ranges from scientists and astronomers to cosmic New Agers and the curious, all enjoying the same interests. Next summer’s festival - the date has yet to be announced - will include astrophotography exhibitions, various debates, Observatory tours and, of course, that big bash in the sky!

Ming’s 205-year dynasty is cruelly crushed - by boffins THE oldest animal in the world, an edible Icelandic clam, has died at the age of 507. But the bivalve mollusc could have lived to an ever riper old age had it not been killed by boffins trying to determine just how old it was! The bivalve (similar to a oyster, or mussel, with two shells hinged together and a soft body) was known as Ming. It was “born” in 1499, which means it was around even before Henry VIII was crowned

Page 18

king. And it was named after the Chinese Ming dynasty, which was in power then. Ming departed this life after all that time when researchers prised open its shell to find out its age. The unlucky mollusc was picked up from an Icelandic seabed back in 2006, but scientists were unaware of the creature’s recordbreaking age. Originally, it was thought to be 405 years old, but advantages

in aging methodology meant this figure was recently revised to 507 years. “We got it wrong the first time and, maybe, we were a bit hasty in publishing our findings back then,” said Paul Butler, an ocean scientist from Bangor University. “But we are absolutely certain that we’ve got the right age now.” The age of bivalves, like counting the rings of a tree, is calculated by totting up growth rings.

These are the lines left annually on the creatures’ shells by seasonal variations affecting how quickly they grow. Ming’s original age had been calculated by counting the growth rings on the hinge of the clam. But as the creature was so old, the rings had bunched together, making them difficult to distinguish, with more than 500 packed into space just millimetres across. The new age of 507 years was calculated instead by counting the rings on the shell’s exterior, where they were

spaced more evenly. By comparing unique growth patterns which had been linked previously with specific time periods, they were able to verify Ming’s almighty age. “It’s worth noting that we caught a total of 200 ocean quahogs on our Iceland expedition,” said Butler. “Thousands of ocean quahogs are caught commercially every year. So it is entirely likely that some fishermen may have caught quahogs as old as, or even older than, the one we caught.” Scientists say that Ming’s long life was

down to its incredibly slow metabolism. But depending on how “age” is defined, it may not be the record-breaker, as proclaimed. One species of jellyfish, for example, turritopsis dohrnii, is biologically immortal: instead of dying, it simply reverts to an earlier stage in its life cycle. This means that there is no theoretical limit to its life span, which makes its age impossible to verify. The longest living terrestrial creature was Adwaita, a giant male tortoise estimated to be 255 years old when it died in 2006.

Have you lost any gold?

CLEANERS found two bags containing 24 1kg gold bars, worth more than £700,000 (850,000 euros), tucked away in the toilet of a commercial plane in eastern India. They were discovered on Tuesday on board a Jet Airways flight at Kolkata Airport, where it had flown to from Bangkok before a scheduled flight to Patna. Airport director BP Mishra told AFP news agency: “The cleaning staff of the airport were going though their routine duties and found the two bags.” Customs officials confiscated the stash and are investigating. No arrests have yet been made, apparently, though OneIndia News said a suspect was being questioned.

India is one of the world’s main gold consumers, and imports are seen as a major contributor to the country’s account deficit. The Indian Government recently raised duty on imports of gold jewellery by 5% to 15%. It is the third increase this year as the government attempts to curb demand for the precious metal, which many Indians hoard traditionally in the belief that it will bring financial security.

No need to flip over the Sun

A MER I C A N space agency NASA expects the Sun to flip upside down in the next three weeks, affecting the entire Solar System.

But there’s no need to panic because the phenomenon actually happens every 11 years. The Sun’s magnetic field will reverse polarity but, at worst, there will be satellite interference and a few radio blackouts. Researchers at Stanford University’s

Wilcox Solar Observatory have monitored the Sun’s magnetic field every day for nearly 40 years. But they admit that they still do not completely understand the cause of the magnetic shift. Solar physicist Todd Hoeksama said: “It’s kind of like a tide coming in or go-

ing out. Each little wave brings a little more water in and, eventually, you get to the full reversal. “It’s not a catastrophic event, but it is a largescale event that has some real implications, although it’s not something we need worry about.”

The Ferguson Files

By Joe Ferguson

BELIEVE it or not, I was not around in 1963. But I was brought up in a house where Elvis and The Beatles ruled.

They were played practically 24 hours a day and, before I had hit my teenage years, I was well caught up in the music from both. Watching their movies, the Fifties and Sixties seemed to me at the time to be the coolest eras to have lived in. And let’s face facts. If, like me, you were brought up in the Seventies, they seemed to be even bleaker than a black-andwhite movie. But then big school came around and I became obsessed with history. You know, the usual events we all learned about: 1066, the Great World Wars (I always questioned what was so “great” about war), etc. However, because of my love of the Fifties and

www.canarianweekly.com

many Thanks, Mr President

Sixties - and the internet had not even been born yet - it was through television, and stories from my parents, that fuelled my interest even more. It was then I heard about the man who, over time, I came to recognise as a true superhero! John F Kennedy. We all know the conspiracy theories about his death, (one gunman, three shots, Lee Harvey Oswald, take it from me), and the sad fact that he treated Marilyn Monroe like a box of Quality Street and shared her around the family. Forget that for a moment. Just think of what he did for Civil Rights in America. He made a difference to so many people’s lives during that period, and showed the racism that was going on. It still seems shameful, even thinking about it today. But President Kennedy’s biggest moment, without doubt, came during 13 days in October 1962. If Kennedy

HERO of the week is, without doubt, Joey Essex. You’ve known him even before I’m a Celebrity - and if you didn’t. you’ve been living on planet Mars. I have always loved the jungle show. Dark evenings, heat on, Ant and Dec on my telly for a few weeks … it’s the best. I’ve watched Joey on Celebrity Juice and found his innocence charming. Never watched TOWIE, though, and I must confess that I have no urge to watch it. But for this young man, who seems to be the only one normal enough to forget the TV cameras and get on with it, he’ll do for me. Why hero? Because of the dreaded eating trial; Kangaroo penis and Turkey testicles are certainly not a treat. But he did it without complaint, so good on him.

Page 20

hadn’t stood his ground, we wouldn’t be around today. It’s not my place to go through the entire history of era as it would be patronising. And for anyone who doesn’t know the whole scenario, I won’t ruin it because it’s the best action story ever. Obviously, we know the ending and, thankfully, it didn’t mean the end for us. We watch movies and TV shows, read books and comics, especially about ruthless dictators who wish to take over and destroy the world. And it seems to be forgotten that’s exactly what was happening. The heads of the Army, Navy and Air Force all wanted to go into Cuba and blow away those missiles, along with the population. But Kennedy kept his cool at a time before the nuclear hotline between the East and West was installed. Even when the Russians shot down and

killed a pilot in a spy plane, that should have been the time to let loose and hit the button. But no, he didn’t want to be the man to make the first move to Armageddon. Okay, so we now know a deal was done to take those US missiles pointing towards the old USSR away from the Turkish border. But if that’s what it took to save the world, so be it. That’s what President Kennedy did. He saved the world. It wasn’t Superman, James Bond or Gok Wan. It was a human being who not only stood for the American people, but for the whole world. Fifty years ago today (Friday), a true hero was taken away from us: John Fitzgerald Kennedy, May 29, 1917-November 22, 1963. Children ’n’ Greed SO another dark Friday night in November has gone. That time when we are asked repeatedly by the BBC to dig deep and

Villain of the week has to be … Joey Essex! Hold on a minute, didn’t you just … Yes I did, but hear me out. Anyone at his age who does not know how to tell the time should be publicly disgraced. Oh, hold on, he has been!

give what we can for their annual children’s charity. I always give a donation without fail, then close the curtains, turn off the lights and stay in, watching anything - anything but the charity show Children in Need! I find the minute-byminute product placement nauseating on a publicly-funded channel. Okay, organisations do quite a lot for fund-raising by getting already overworked and underpaid staff to do all the work for the deserving cause. And that’s the problem. The big company looks fantastic as the millionaire boss hands over the large, cardboard cheque for thousands of pounds, with the firm’s name bigger than the total on said cheque, as his wife, probably his mistress, and the cleaner wear extra-large sweat shirts with the company’s name emblazoned all over them. They may be giving over a few thousand, but they are gaining many times over on free advertising. And let’s not forget the lovely tax relief. Smiles all around, then. The majority of money collected goes to children’s charities in the UK, but a lot also goes overseas. So next time they show a child starving somewhere in the world, and Terry Wogan asks us to dig deep, please do. But remember that while those poor kids are starving, you’re watching the same show where quite a few are sitting in a bath

of baked beans, or having custard pies thrown at them. Ironic, isn’t it, trying to feed kids as good food is wasted. And let’s not forget the huge spread laid on for the celebrities in the Green Room, half of which goes to waste. But here’s probably the biggest problem with the whole thing. Since last Saturday morning, the BBC have reminded us in every news bulletin, and, it seems, every 10 seconds of The One Show, that we, the public, raised the fantastic total of £31 million. I’m happy with that, because it was the public who did it. But it’s also us who pay the BBC. Through out licence fee, WE THE PUBLIC pay, and they are answerable to us. So over the next few weeks, with the runup to Christmas and the great Auntie Beeb repeating what we did for Children in Need, also remember we did something else. Not as worthwhile as looking after kids, but something on an even bigger monetary scale. We lined the pockets of BBC executives paid off by the company over the last 18 months. To the tune of £329 million! Makes the charity total look like small change now. So for me, November will always be Children ’n’ Greed.

Only in Northern Ireland… Would you get a City Council who don’t quite understand the word “free”. Late rock star Van Morrison (he’s not dead? He certainly looked it on stage) was given the key to the city as a free man of Belfast. So the Council gave away two tickets to those Belfast ratepayers lucky enough to win a lottery draw for a “Free” concert in the city. Van Morrison’s company sent a bill for the stage set-up and to pay wages. The bill? £36,000. No problem, say Belfast City Council. Who will pay for that then? That’s right, the ratepayers. Quite costly for a free concert!

Last Tango In Halifax Tuesday 26 November, BBC1, 20.00 As the BAFTA-winning series continues, we join Alan and Celia at their romantic but secret nuptials. Having discovered the registry card, Gillian races to the service, as she simply can’t believe Alan and Celia have gone ahead without inviting their nearest and dearest. As she interrupts the ceremony, her outburst unnerves Celia but Alan is determined to carry on. Will they tie the knot? Later, back at the farm, Gillian apologises for over-reacting but her temper gets the better of her and she lashes out at Celia, making Alan deeply upset. Raff has some shocking news to share with his mum – his girlfriend, Ellie, is eight months pregnant. Gillian is appalled as she doesn’t want Raff to quit school. Things get even more dramatic when Alan and Celia arrive to meet Ellie just as she goes into labour. Alan tells Celia that he’ll have to help Raff out financially, as he wants him to focus on school and not worry about getting a job to support the baby. Celia respects his decision but makes it clear that she’ll have to help Caroline out financially as she wants to buy the house from John. John’s situation isn’t particularly rosy either as his publisher has decided to drop him, which adds to his financial woes. Caroline has a big question for Kate: will she sell her house so she can buy John out? Kate’s amazed but pleased that Caroline wants to move so quickly, but will this be the only lifechanging decision that the couple has to consider?

A Culture Show Special BBC2, 21:30

Me, You and Doctor Who. Why has a kids TV show about a mad man with a box that can travel anywhere in time and space become the BBC’s longest running TV drama - and one of Britain’s biggest brands? On its 50th anniversary, lifelong fan Matthew Sweet argues you ignore Doctor Who at your peril. It may be a piece of children’s television, but he believes it’s one of the most important cultural artefacts of modern Britain. Put simply, Doctor Who matters. The Culture Show explores with wit, authority and affection, why Doctor Who has become entrenched in British life. Matthew Sweet traces the 50 years of extraordinary social change and uncertainty that sent generations of children scuttling behind the sofa. How did a pepper pot, the Nazis and a sink plunger result in the scariest adversaries of our time - the Daleks? Sweet argues how in turn the show became a cultural force in its own right, influencing music, design and storytelling.

Stonehenge: Walking Through History Channel 4, 20:00

Tony Robinson returns for a new threepart series of Walking Through History, embarking on more spectacular walks through some of Britain’s most historic landscapes in search of the richest stories from our past. In this first episode, Tony heads off for a 45mile walk across Wiltshire to tell the story of life and death in the last centuries of the Stone Age. His route over chalk downlands and Salisbury plain takes him through the greatest concentration of prehistoric sites in Europe.

Killing Kennedy Channel 4, 21:00

This factual drama, based on Bill O’Reilly’s best-selling book Killing Kennedy: The End of Camelot, marks the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F Kennedy. Starring Rob Lowe as President Kennedy, Ginnifer Goodwin as Jacqueline Kennedy, Will Rothhaar as Lee Harvey Oswald and Michelle Trachtenberg as Marina Oswald, the programme charts the highs and lows of two lives that would intersect and result in two horrific murders that stunned a nation and marked the end of an era.

Benidorm is back in 2014 for sixth series

ITV’s award winning comedy Benidorm is back for a sixth series starting in the New Year. Transmission date to be confirmed. Returning to enjoy the four star hotel treatment are Mick Garvey (Steve Pemberton), Janice Garvey (Siobhan Finneran) and Madge Harvey (Sheila Reid). Viewers will be surprised to see how grown up Michael Garvey (Oliver Stokes) has become – he’s now an adventurous teenager who’s set to cause his parents many troubled afternoons by the pool. It’s all change in series six with the arrival of the Dykes, a brand new family set to stir things up at the Solana resort. Heading up the new family are Clive (Perry Benson) and Tonya (Hannah Waddingham) – a lively Watford couple with Clive firmly under the thumb of his no nonsense wife. They bring their two children with them, Bianca (Bel Powley) and Tiger (Danny Walters) - both are young, single and looking for fun!. Other favourites returning are popular swingers Donald Stewart (Kenny Ireland) and Jacqueline Stewart (Janine Duvitski) who intend to claim their free holiday that Joyce Temple Savage (Sherrie Hewson) promised them at the end of the last series. Hunky barman Mateo (Jake Canuso) still holds fort behind the pool bar with the help of friendly transsexual Les/Lesley (Tim Healey). Liam (Adam Gillen) has now joined Kenneth DuBeke (Tony Maudsley) at his hair salon ‘Blow & Go’ – the very discreet and selective hair and beauty emporium within the Solana resort.

Denise and Mr Ballentine discuss the business of the Paradise; impressed, he suggests she compiles a formal proposition. She tells Moray of this potential investment, but he is dismissive. Lucille confesses to Clara she doubts her feelings for Ballentine and is resolute she must leave him. Dudley is frustrated by Moray’s absence at the store and his elusive behaviour. He chastises him for his disinterest in Ballentine and accuses him of rivalry towards Denise. Lucille suspects Clara has broken her confidence. Learning her suspicions are wrong, she is further convinced she is undeserving of Ballentine’s love. Tom’s behaviour is disturbingly spiteful, and a frightened Katherine confides in Moray. Unbeknownst to them, Tom has been watching their intimacy grow. Ready to banish Moray from the Paradise, Jonas convinces Tom to bide his time.

19:00 ........... F1: Grand Prix 20:00 ......Great Continental Railway Journeys With his 1913 guidebook in hand and clad in a luminous pink jacket, improbable Bohemian Michael Portillo explores the stunning art nouveau architecture of the Czech capital. In a cafe popular with artists of the time he discovers the dance craze of the day - the tango - and gamely gives it a go. In the spa of kings, Marienbad, now known as Marianske Lazne, Michael samples the sulphurous waters and wallows in peat and mud. At the Skoda factory in Pilsen he investigates how the machine products of peacetime gave way to the manufacture of armaments for war and test drives a state of the art passenger train locomotive made there today. Crossing the border from Bohemia to Bavaria, Michael encounters a fire breathing dragon in Furth-im-Wald and in Nuremberg he rides German railway history - made in Britain. Arriving in Munich, he discovers an early 20th century pioneer who laid the foundations for the city’s pre-eminence in science and technology today.

Countryfile BBC1, 18:25

Compilation - Our Living Laboratory. Countryfile looks at the part the landscape has played in making scientific breakthroughs, and the way in which such breakthroughs have changed our understanding of the land we live in. John Craven heads to Wytham Woods, Oxford University’s ‘laboratory with leaves’. It is 70 years since Charles Elton first made scientific observations in these woods; John walks in his footsteps to find out how Elton’s work still plays a part in shaping our ideas of the world, and meets the scientists carrying his work forward. John also looks back at the best of Countryfile’s forays into the world of science, including Matt Baker’s look at the pioneer of natural history; Gilbert White and Julia Bradbury’s trip to the coast to uncover the story of the palaeontologist and fossil collector, Mary Anning; the time when Adam learned how Hollywood wizardry is helping scientists breed the perfect pig; and when Tom Heap found out how robotics could transform farming in the future.

MasterChef: The Professionals BBC2, 20:30

Eight ambitious chefs from all over the country face their first test - the Invention Test. Monica challenges them to make one dish using a selection of just seven ingredients: pork sausage, spinach, squash, gorgonzola, walnuts, apples and almonds. Monica first cooks a dish for Gregg from the same ingredients in the same amount of time - just one hour - to demonstrate the standard of food she expects and what is possible in the time. Next it’s the eight hopeful chefs’ turn. For now, the eight are all safe, but the group is split and next up the first four chefs return to face three more tests - Monica’s much feared Skills Test followed by Michel Roux Jr’s demanding Classics challenges. After this both Monica and Michel decide who has earned a place in the quarter-finals and who will be leaving the competition for good.

The Sound of Musicals Channel 4, 21:00

London’s musical theatreland is booming. With millions to be made at the box office, competition is cut-throat and everyone from producers to performers is searching for that coveted spot in the West End. With unprecedented access to a season in the West End, this series goes behind the scenes to witness every aspect of the business of musicals. This episode puts casting in the spotlight. In the last 10 years, reality TV shows have changed the landscape of the West End and demand for recognisable faces is huge. Casualty and Strictly Come Dancing star Tom Chambers has been pulling in the crowds at Top Hat but is coming to the end of his contract. Producer Kenny Wax is looking for a classic ‘triple threat’: a performer who can act, sing and dance, to fill Tom’s tap shoes, but they aren’t easy to find. Kenny has to go to Broadway to find his leads Gavin Lee and Kristen Beth Williams.

Nigel and Adam continue their mission to reconnect Britain with the origins of our food. The UK consumes well over a billion chickens a year and with chicken appearing on almost every takeaway and restaurant menu in the country, it is not surprising that it is Britain’s favourite meat. Nigel travels to Manchester for inspiration from local restaurants to help him spice up some recipes back on the farm in the Cotswolds. From chicken kiev to avocado dips, our shopping baskets reveal our love of foreign fare, but Nigel shows us how to make these processed foods at home. Adam meanwhile, accepts the ultimate farming challenge - to successfully grow exotic crops such as rice and Asian mushrooms in time to feed a hungry crowd of guests with a selection of home made international dishes.

Ben investigates mass hysteria, which was the official verdict on an incident in Nottinghamshire back in 1980 when 300 people collapsed at a marching band gala. Meanwhile, Julia investigates the phenomenon of spontaneous human combustion, hoping to discover the reason why it occurs so much in popular culture. W C choice Tudor Monastery Farm BBC2, 21.00

Tudor Abbey Farm Historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Peter Ginn and Tom Pinfold turn the clock back over 500 years to run a farm at the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum in West Sussex exactly as it would have been in 1500, during the reign of the first Tudor King, Henry VII. It’s the height of summer and the team are carefully monitoring cereal crops from which they’ll make the staple foods of everyday Tudor life: bread and ale. Records show that it wasn’t unusual for a person to consume a twopound loaf and drink eight pints of weak ale a day. At the farm, while Ruth makes ale for the workers, Peter is in the monastic bakehouse using flour ground in a Tudor-style windmill to make three types of bread: unleavened communion bread for use in church, fine white bread for the Abbot, and much coarser wholemeal bread for the monks. Another commodity required by the monasteries was wax, essential to make church candles, which Tom helps the monastic beekeepers to produce.

In the past, parents worried about how much TV their children were watching, but the advent of hand-held devices such as smart phones and tablets means that children are now using technology at an increasingly young age. Recent studies suggest that nearly a third of three and four-yearolds regularly use a tablet, and many parents admit that their toddlers know more about technology than they do. Is this exposure to new technology affecting the way our children learn, behave and interact? Reporter Jonathan Maitland, whose own two-year-old son is a keen tablet-user, examines the evidence and visits a nursery in South Wales where preschool children use tablets and laptops as learning tools.

We’re keeping it live! AS a child, I was brought up around live music, and my father was the lead singer in a band from as early as I can remember.

Back in the Seventies, there was no such thing as backing tracks, and even solo singers would have a resident organist and drummer to play for them. And all artistes had to provide their own sheet music, known by their industry nickname of “dots” I will always remember seeing round yellow stickers in every dressing room of every club saying: “Keep Music Live”. These stickers came from the Musicians’ Union and were distributed to its members. This union fought against the use of backing tracks to keep their members in employment. Sadly a lot of musicians lost their jobs to backing tracks, and the rise and rise of karaoke through the Eighties and Nineties brought these to the masses and the self-contained artiste was born. The “Keep Music Live” mantra has stayed with me since childhood, and music is never better than when it is per-

formed live. This week I’m featuring a group of amazingly talented musicians who go by the name of The Vagabonds. Here in Tenerife, seven nights a week, they play at The Bulls Head, on Parque de la Paz. Around three months ago, the band’s dynamics changed, with frontman Christian Taylor returning to the UK to pursue other projects. The band auditioned for a new singer, but settled on Shiel Campbell, a former solo artiste who has worked as a tribute artiste. He was half of the resident duo at Leonardos for most of this summer, before moving to The Bulls Head. The Vagabonds are a rock band, covering every area of rock music including classic and modern songs from the genre, as well as some

big power ballads from Bon Jovi, Lonestar, Bryan Adams and many more. Shiel has a big vocal range and there are not many rock songs that escape his ability. The band have a unique lineup and Shiel says: “It sounds like the start of a joke when you say: “An Englishman, two Bulgarians and a Scotsman in a band in Tenerife...” But their sound is far from being anything comical. Bass player Ivan, from Bulgaria, was responsible for putting the band together six years ago, especially for the The Bulls Head residency. Ivan is a task master and asks the band members for commitment and professionalism always. Some people have an ear for a good sound and he is one of them. He is a technical wiz-

ard when it comes to a sound rig, and he has created an astonishing warm and full sound, in which every instrument blends, as well being able to be heard perfectly within the mix. His skills don’t end there, Ivan is a multiinstrumentalist and can play too many to list, from stringed, woodwind, percussion or reed, his talent is unsurpassed. Drummer Dominic, another multi-instrumentalist, is like a metronome in his playing and never misses a beat, making it all look so effortless. Dom comes from a musical background and has being playing since he was very young. His skills on the keyboard are astounding, especially if you know him only as a drummer - a brilliant one at that. But if you saw what he

can do on the ivories, you would be in awe. I first met him when he was just 15 and playing keyboard in a band called Checkmate in Chicago’s, Los Cristianos. The rest of the band nicknamed him “Lighting Boy” because of the speed at which he could fit a musical scale into a tempo which would, otherwise, not allow a lesser player to do so. Guitarist Tony, also from Bulgaria, joined the band some eight months ago, so his journey with The Vagabonds has only just begun. Nine times out of 10, this is the instrument most people love to watch being played, especially if it’s played well within the rock genre. Rock music provides songs with some iconic lead breaks, and these are what astound audiences. And in The Bulls Head, it is not uncommon for an audience to applaud one of Tony’s amazing

solos spontaneously. The band are going from strength to strength in this bar. Never have I seen a working partnership play out so well between the owners Jose and Carlos, and the resident entertainment. Over the years, The Bulls Head has always been known for live music. Other things have been tried, but some places are just live venues and nothing else will work. It’s a big bar with plenty of seating, a huge terrace and lots of parking available close by with, an underground car park at the Safari Centre just seconds away. The staff are extremely friendly, and you will always receive a warm welcome from this familyrun establishment. The Vagabonds play every night from 10pm till 1am, and if you love your live music, go along a see these boys perform, You will not be disappointed!

IT’S still early, but Mega Rock Café is not wasting any time in organising their Christmas festivities. Every year, businesses around the south start to think about the annual staff Christmas Party. If you are one of those tasked with organising it, look no further because this brand-new bar is offering an exciting alternative to the norm. With deals in conjunction with Mega Bowl, this is the ideal place for your staff celebrations. The usual routine will still be running, with live music every night, featuring some of the Island’s top artistes, from outstanding instrumental soloists to stunning vocalists. This venue really has the bit between its teeth and is striving to offer a product which is second to none. Plus, it is in an area that has grown over the last few years into what is fast becoming an entertainment centre here in the South. You can find Mega Rock Café in Fanabe, within the walls of the Mega Bowl. Don’t leave it too late to book one of the three amazing deals being offered for Christmas 2013.

Robbie set for a music milestone LADY GAGA hit the No1 spot this week with her new album ARTPOP.

The album chart has been running officially for a little over 57 years and Gaga’s album is the 999th to reach the top. This means that no matter how long she hogs that spot, the next album to get there will be a milestone in the chart’s history. The prestigious 1000th No.1 album could go to various different artistes, with three big-hitters releasing albums this week. The hot spot could be occupied this Sunday by Robbie Williams, Jake Bugg or JLS. Robbie´s Swings Both Ways has been talked about for a long time, and it has been given a high profile already with a last-minute change to the first single released from the album. At first, his official website stated that Shine My Shoe would be the initial track, but a week later all had changed and the track being teased up was Go Gentle, which got to No.10 in the singles chart. Jake Bugg has, for some reason, tried to change his vocal signature style a little on his second studio album, Shangri La. This offering is pretty much run-of-the-mill stuff, which is surprising when, arguably, the most famed producer in the world today, Rick Rubin, was involved.

Jake always says he has achieved success because he represents a “genuine and natural” alternative to the X-Factor genre. But peel back the surface and you’ll be surprised to discover that much of his debut album was co-written by songwriters for hire. They include Matt

Prime, who has been responsible for a string of chart successes from Olly Murs, Liberty X and Will Young - all of whom were TV talentshow contestants. Not so much a “genuine and natural” alternative when you look a bit deeper and, for this reason, I don’t believe Jake will be able

to contend with the mighty Robbie Williams’ popularity. The third album in the running comes from JLS, who announced earlier this year that they would split up after their current tour and release their Greatest Hits album. That time is now upon us and, as JLS prepare to say farewell, they hope to go out on a high with their album at No.1 and enjoying the acclaim of being the 1000th No.1 album in the history of the UK album chart. Music, and its production rate, has changed over the past 40 years. And when you study the milestones listed, you can see that it took 15 years for the 100th No.1 album, and then just seven years before another 100 albums had racked up No.1s. The number of years decreases between milestones, proving that music production is happening a lot faster nowadays. The length of time between album 900 and the forthcoming 1,000th No.1 is just three years. The way music is distributed has been the main effect on increased production. Anyone can buy an album now from their smart phone, moments after its release. Gone are the days when you would wait till the weekend to go in to town and physically buy an album and then have to wait until you get home before could play it. The demand on artistes now is higher than ever, and it is little wonder that JLS have decided to split. They have probably been the hardest working boyband of all over the last 20 years. We shall see this Sunday whether they have done enough to keep Robbie away from the top spot. Teenager’s a big noise

MARTIN GARRIX has bagged his first UK No.1 single with Animals - at the age of 17! What drew my attention to Martin, firstly, was the song. House music can sometimes sound familiar, and Animals has that effect. It has been around for a while, achieving No.2 spot in Holland’s national singles chart. What also stands out about him is his age He is already listed at No.40 in DJ magazine’s top 100 DJs. And at 17, that is some accomplishment by the teenager. With Animals, an almost lyric-free track barring a few hooklines, Martin uses the big house sounds with big drops through the song. We can all see the

commercial success of DJs and music producers like Calvin Harris & David Guetta, and their collaborations with other artistes. But Garrix produces some big sounds for house music lovers without too much vocal. And when the track is heard through a club’s PA system, it really does come to life, and it’s a tune that drives an audience into movement. He certainly is a force to be reckoned with. With so many good tunes being released right now, it is hard to believe that Martin’s track will stay at the top of the charts for more than a week. That said, it is the first instrumental UK No.1 this Millennium.

Creating the ‘wow’ factor By Sue McDonald NEVER mind the X Factor, when it comes to your home you need to create your own WOW factor!

Firstly, it is important to make your home look as nice as possible, welcoming, comfortable and practical for use. After all, this is the place where you will spend your free time relaxing and enjoying yourself. Otherwise, what is the point of working hard? Even if you rent the property out, it is important that you make the best of what you have available. Nowadays, a lot of rentals are obtained through social media, and it will be your photos that differentiate your apartment from all the others, even those on the same complex. This week, we are dealing with two very different scenarios. We have one luxury house to furnish, where budget is of secondary importance,

Page 38

which doesn’t mean it is unlimited. But it enables us to go that bit further in choosing fabulous items, provided they deliver the desired effect. The property will be used by its owners, but also for high-end rentals. The other property is a repossession, which is in bad condition and needs to be prepared for a longterm rental programme. Budget is definitely an issue here because, although the property was bought for a low price, it is an investment. So we need to get it up and running and paying for itself as soon as possible. Although the two scenarios are so different, they have similarities. Both must be kitted out with every essential item, right down to the last tea-spoon and bath mat. After all, the owners don’t want to be bothered chasing around after last-minute items. And the tenants, whether paying a reasonable monthly rent, or a high weekly one, want the property to be wellequipped. So preparing an inventory that covers all even-

tualities is essential. Secondly, both properties need to look good, while also being practical. Even in the high-end property, it’s no good putting flimsy, breakable items in where rentals (including kids) are going to be present. So no white sofas, regardless of how good they can look! The wow factor in the bigger property will probably be achieved with the use of designer items, and the use of contrasting textures: suedes, marbles, glass and chrome. The colour scheme may be rather muted, but essentially luxurious. First impressions are vital, and the furnishings must be at least as impressive as the house itself. In the rental apartment, we will need to get the wow factor without being able to use expensive items. However, this is quite possible, and a putting a bit of thought into colour schemes and furniture arrangement, plus the use of mirrors, cushions and pictures to tie it all together, mean you can still get the desired effect. So go for your WOW factor, regardless of budget!

Mobiles do all the talking...

MOBILE devices will outstrip internet traffic from desktop computers for the first time on Christmas Day. That’s the prediction of Mark Lewis, online director for John Lewis, who says mobiles made up almost 50% of all traffic to the company’s website on 25th December last year. Statistics from the retailer showed mobile traffic peaked on the company’s site at 9pm, while the busiest day was Boxing Day, with more than 920,000 visits. And it will get busier this year for certain be-

cause, Mr Lewis says: “Shopping is becoming much more of a social experience. “People are browsing, purchasing and sharing ideas with others, using their mobile phones and tablets. “And we expect this to increase dramatically during the festive period as customers shop on the go. “We anticipate that Christmas Day will be the tipping point for mobile, which is set to be the shining star of the festive season.” Mr Lewis believes the increase in mobile internet use will be reflected

nationwide by online shoppers’’ habits He points out that mobile traffic now accounts for 40% of all visits to the company’s site. Fashion accessories appear to be the most popular purchases for mobile shoppers, with 78% of the company’s total sales in the category now completed on a mobile phone or tablet. “Although customers are more likely to shop for lower-value items on mobile devices, there is a significant proportion of customers purchasing big-ticket items,” he is happy to add.

By David Hudgell THE Flame of the Forest must be one of the most spectacularlooking trees of all, with its widespread leaves and riot of orangeyred flowers.

It’s such a shame they come out over here at a certain time of the year only, around the month of June and, maybe, nudging into July. But when they do appear, they’re a delight for sore eyes. and they tend to stick around for a while. If you keep those eyes peeled, especially down the middle of the dual carriageway at the rear of the Apolo Centre, leading to the main Los Cristianos roundabout, and in the nearby swimming-pool car park, you’ll see what I mean. And today, without the colour, they are still really attractive But once the flowers have gone, leaving huge seeds pods, the green, velvety leaves eventually start to disappear as well, and the tree can look pretty dismal. But don’t for one moment think it’s on its way out. Yes, it undergoes a really ugly period every year, but it bursts back into life once the winter has gone. And come June, it reemerges as a tree of flame, a riot of flowers covering the entire

Flaming heck, what a tree!

crown. In the UK and in Australia in particular, the tree is known as a Royal Poinciana, and it certainly has a regal appearance when in full bloom. The flowers, which have no scent, are massed along the ends of the leaves, and their brilliance is shown off to perfection by their deep, contrasting colours. Each flower consists of five petals comprising one standard, two smaller wings and a curved, beak-shaped keel, which gives it a “Parrot Tree” nickname. The back-curving petals are covered with

fine, silky hair and really are gorgeous, and when they have run their time, those huge pods appear - up to one foot long and 1¼ins wide, carrying loads of seeds. Wander into the car park already mentioned in early October, and you are sure to find the odd pod which has fallen to the ground. A quick shake and a rattle inside tells you it is seed-laden. Take the pod home, open it up somehow it takes quite a bit of prising open - and there are the seeds all line up for you to grow your very own Flame of the Forest.

Soak them in boiling water until it cools to soften the outer shell, – or you can even sandpaper them, before planting them indoors, about ½in deep in a small pot, in quality loam, and water gently every day. I’ve lost a couple recently by letting the hot sun get to them, inadvertently, through a window, so be careful. They actually thrive in hot sunshine, but only when they are well under way. It’s exciting watching them germinate, burst into life and, within a week or two, seeing those first few leaves

peep out, and then start spreading. I’m not sure how long it takes before you can plant them in the garden, but the best way is to weather them gently, putting them outside in the shade during the day to start with, bringing them in at night, and building up from there. But do wait until they have reached at least six inches before chancing them outside. They grow tall and skinny, so be sure to pinch out the top from time to time to help thicken the stem and get the leaf-spread. The adult tree, a native of India, Burma and Sri Lanka, grows to some 20 metres high if allowed. In Tenerife, though, they tend to be pruned down and grow to about half that size or less. The leaves, which appear around April and May over here, are 10-18ins wide and grow in three-leaf clusters. When fresh, the leaves are like soft suede; thick, smooth and a beautiful green, whereas

old leaves are as firm and tough as leather, smooth above and hairy below. The Flame is popular with arty-craft types because a brilliant colouring matter can be obtained from the flowers, which can be made into water-paint or a cotton dye. It also has other qualities which appeal. A clear oil is harboured by the seeds, and the gum, which exudes from the stems (known as Bengal Kino), is valuable to chemists because of its shrinkage qualities, and to leather workers because of its tannin. The young roots make a strong fibre which has many uses, including the making of rope sandals. On top of all that, the flowers are popular with all Indian women, who adorn their hair with them. You may not have noticed these extraspecial trees on your Tenerife travels, But once they become apparent, you’ll spot them all over the place.

Lily by any other name… THERE is a host of names for the Kaffir Lily and that’s because it’s native to South Africa.

The term “Kaffir” has always been racially offensive there, where it is commonly known as a Clivia lily. But it also called a Bush lily, St John’s lily, Fire lily or simply Clivia.

Botanically, it is named after Lady Charlotte Clive, Duchess of Northumberland, who first cultivated the plant in England. Clivias grow from bulbs, and they can reach as high as two feet, with colourful flowers and long, symmetrical, dark-green leaves. They are easy-going plants and thrive in shady garden spots

22nd November - 28th November 2013

such as under trees or on shaded patios. They prefer well-drained, moist and rich soil. They also make excel-

lent house plants. They are also popular as an indoor plant in Central Europe, especially the Clivia miniata species, which usually flowers during the winter or in early spring. Over here, however, they love our sunny, all-year climate (well, most of the time), and the main flowering season starts in May and will go on and on, if watered daily.

Several cultivars of Clivia miniata, like “fire lily”, have clusters of bright-orange blooms with yellow centres Yellow cultivars include Clivia miniata “Aurea” and Clivia miniata “Golden Dragon”. The flowers are longlasting and look beautiful inside the home or outside, in pots and containers, or in the garden. Indoor clivias flower

best when they are slightly root-bound in their pots. However, you will need to repot your plant eventually. Experts recommend repotting every three years, and do so later in spring after the plant’s blooms have faded. A word of caution: for all their prettiness, clivias and their sap are poisonous, so keep them out of reach of children and pets.

BRUSHING your teeth regularly can prevent the clogging of arteries which may lead to heart attacks and strokes.

Scientists in America have discovered the most compelling evidence yet that cleaning and flossing helps to combat bacteria that can cause hardening of the arteries. It means that those who brush their teeth for two minutes, twice a day, can cut dramatically their risk of developing heart disease, or suffering a stroke. Researchers from the Mailman School of Public Health at New York’s Columbia University studied the link between gum health and atherosclerosis a

potentially serious condition where the arteries are clogged with fatty substances, such as cholesterol. Over the three-year study, researchers found the more gum health improved among their volunteer patients, the healthier their arteries became. Atherosclerosis is usually the cause of heart illness and strokes. It is thought that bacteria which builds up in teeth can lead to clots in the arteries and cause heart attacks. Dr Moise Desvarieux, co-author of the study published in the American Heart Association journal, said: “This is the most direct evidence yet that modifying the periodontal bacterial profile could play a role in preventing or slowing both diseases.” Factors such as

smoking, obesity and diabetes also increase the risk of atherosclerosis, but the scientists took these into account when studying 420 adult volunteers. Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, said: “This is truly groundbreaking. “Bad dental hygiene and bleeding gums can cause up to 700 types of bacteria to enter the bloodstream. “The potential link between what goes on in your mouth and the health of your heart has been an intense topic of debate for some time. “This research clearly shows the more you improve and maintain your gum health, the less chance there is of developing a potential life-threatening illness.”

By Val Sainsbury MANY people regard walking to work as their daily dose of exercise - but it’s not enough to improve health. A one-hour, high-intensity workout is said to provide the same fitness benefits as 50 hours of walking. New research from Down Under also reveals that an hour of high-intensity exercise, pushing the heart rate up to 75% of its maximum capacity or more, equals the same amount of fat loss as two hours of moderate-intensity exercise. Researchers at Adelaide’s Flinders University, and the University of South Australia, measured the health benefits gained from every minute of vigorous activity compared with the same time spent doing moderate-intensity exercise. They studied 620 adults, who completed a six-week exercise programme, and they assessed the effects on four disease risk-factors: body fat and weight, cholesterol, hip and waist girth, and aerobic fitness. The participants were divided into two groups, one performing a onehour, high-intensity

Health and Fashion

Keep it short and sharp! workout - such as circuit training or a step class three times a week. The other group were asked to do 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise - such as walking - seven days a week. While the moderateintensity group experienced some health benefits, the high-intensity people saw much greater improvements to their health. Dr Lynda Norton, the study’s lead author, said: “Most physical activity guidelines recommend a 30-minute daily walk. “But we found that it would take 50 hours of walking to achieve the same aerobic fitness you could get from just one hour of high-intensity or vigorous activity. “When we looked at cholesterol, we found it would take five hours of walking to see the same improvements as one hour of vigorous exercise. And for body-mass index, it was the equivalent of about eight hours of walking.” She added: We know that low levels of exercise are associated with poor health, and that short, intense bouts of exercise

are better. But we didn’t know how much better. ‘We’re now planning to look at what happens to your metabolic and fitness profile when you do vigorous exercise, such as boot camps or a spin class - but then sit for long periods. “My belief is that if you do vigorous exercise, it counteracts a lot of sitting, whereas other researchers say sedentary behaviour counteracts physical activity. However, they have generally been looking at moderate-intensity exercise.” With obesity rates on the rise, Dr Norton said intervention strategies to increase activity, particularly high-intensity exercise where less time is required, are important. Dr Norton stressed: “Any form of physical activity is better than nothing, but you’ll get a lot more bang for your buck if you increase the intensity. “This is particularly relevant in our time-poor modern lifestyles, where lack of time is the most common reason people give for not doing more exercise.”

Antibiotics can’t cure runny nose

RUNNY noses and that chesty feeling is not a signal for people to seek antibiotics from their doctors. It has been described as a “prevailing myth” by health experts that the drugs were needed to treat such infections. Public Health England and the Royal College of General Practitioners say the symptoms are often caused by viruses. And they add that the use of antibiotics is leading to resistance. Public Health England’s own research showed that 40% of people thought antibiotics would help a cough if the phlegm was green. But few thought it would make a differ-

ence to clear-coloured phlegm. Dr Cliodna McNulty, from the organisation, said: “It’s a prevailing myth that anyone with green phlegm or snot needs a course of antibiotics to get better. “Most infections that generate lots of phlegm and snot are viral illnesses and will get better on their own, although you can expect to feel pretty poorly for a few weeks.”

22nd November - 28th November 2013

She added: “The problems of antibiotic resistance are growing, but everyone can help by not using antibiotics for the treatment of uncomplicated infections.” Dr Maureen Baker, chairwoman of the Royal College of GPs, said: “Overuse of antibiotics is a serious publichealth concern. “Infections adapt to antibiotics used to kill them and can, ultimately, make treatment ineffective. So it is crucial that antibiotics are used appropriately.” The green colour in phlegm and snot is the result of a protein made by the immune system to fight infection.

In the mood for partying By Ruth Benson SOME people start planning for Christmas from the end of September, while others are filled with dread.

The festive season brings out different emotions in everyone. There are those who can’t wait to put up the tree and have their homes filled with the scent of pine and vanilla, while listening to Now That’s What I Call Christmas. Others leave everything to the last minute, hoping it will all be over and done with in a flash. One thing most people do tend to partake in is the annual Christmas Party. Whether it be with work colleagues, mates from the pub or the girls’ annual night out, most seem happy to join in. Here in Tenerife, there is an abundance of ways to celebrate, from the less elaborate of meeting down the bar for a few drinks to a night away in a hotel, a meal, or even taking in one of the many shows the Island has to offer. But the Christmas Party can also be seen as a traumatic event for people regarding the perfect outfit. The haircut, visit to a nail salon or a session of beauty treatment are all preparations for the big event. But the outfit itself is

also important. I mentioned last week that part of the reason we set up London Look was because of the lack of fashion choice in Tenerife. How many times have you been to an event and seen an outfit from one of the chain stores? So the outfit is one you want to feel comfortable in; one which is fashionable and perfect for the occasion. But how many of us ladies have bought shoes into which we have squeezed our feet and suffered, just because they were the perfect pair? The one thing that crosses most women’s minds when deciding what to wear is: “Have I worn this before?” This then gives you the opportunity to buy a new one. Well gents, we can’t be seen in the same thing twice! So this leads on to what the fashions will be this Christmas. Gents, this is where you get it easy - a smart shirt is the usual attire, and you may even find the odd man in a smart pair of trousers.

For women it’s a different ball game. So here are a few ideas of what is popular for this season. The LBD: you can never go wrong with this wardrobe essential and, to make it more festive and stylish, add some bling. Jewels, either on the dress or jewellery itself, adds instant glamour to any outfit. Lace is also another popular choice, as are sequins. This year we have seen a lot of bodycon dresses which don’t allow for that extra mince pie but, nevertheless, can be most flattering. Maxi dresses are always popular because they flatter all shapes and sizes. We have also seen a lot of mesh dresses and tops which emphasise and highlight a woman’s body in a really complimentary manner. Whatever your choice of party outfit, the main thing is to enjoy it because, after the mulled wine has been downed, you will look like a million dollars. Even if you don’t feel it!

La Cava Restaurant, Los Cristianos

Jam-packed, and fabulous food... There are lots of delights to enjoy in La Cava this winter.

The Los Cristianos restaurant, established since 1979, is well known and loved by residents and regular visitors to the Island. We arrived at 8pm to find the place already jam-packed, but luckily, as always, we had made a reservation (absolutely essential). Our server, Rony, greeted us with a big smile as always, and invited us to an aperitif at the bar while we waited a few minutes for our table. This was actually a blessing as it gave us an extra few minutes to look at the menu and make the tough decision about what to or-

Page 42

der. I’d describe it as international with Eastern European influences, making it a bit different from the norm. And you can’t fail to miss the warm, rustic ambience, with dark wooden-beam ceilings. In no time, we were showed to our table and our orders taken. Being cheese lovers, we went for the Fried Cheese in breadcrumbs and Medallions of Courgette with ham and Cheese layers for starters. Then the Sole Meuniere and Brandy Flambéed Chicken Breasts for mains. After looking at the extensive wine list we decided on Vina Norte, a local-made red, to complement our meal. Just as were trying to recover from the amazing starters, our main

courses arrived. My word, I don’t think I have ever seen a bigger Sole. We thought they had mistakenly given us a shark instead! The Meuniere sauce was delicious, with zesty lemon, butter and herbs. The Chicken Breast, in a smooth, creamy brandy sauce with a hint of mushroom, was ex-

tremely tender and just melted in the mouth. Both came with a side of creamy mash, full of flavour. Although we said we couldn’t manage anything else to eat after all that, (you definitely get great value for money) our arm was twisted by the couple on the next table,

Andrew and Jane McBride, from Glasgow, have been coming to La Cava annually for the last 20 years. They were having the Ice Cream Whiskey Cake, to which they recommended adding a drop of Cointreau over the top. And they were right; it was amazing! We finished off with a couple of speciality coffees: Irish Coffee and a barraquito, while we waited for La Cava owner and head chef Ludo to sneak out of the kitchen

for a couple of minutes to answer a few questions. Ludo is Czechoslovakian, and spent some time in Canada, but he has been here for 34 years. He told us that at the time, there were few good restaurants on the Island, and he wanted to introduce some of his home influences. Examples of these on the menu are the Svickova and the Hungarian goulash. He also recommends the gratinated Creamed Spinach, which, I have to admit, is also one of my favourites there. We also took a sneak peak at La Cava’s special Christmas and New Year a la carte menu, which looks excellent - and without that frustrating seasonal price increase! La Cava is open from 6.30pm, and closed on Sundays. It is situated by the main harbour of Los Cristianos. Give it a try. Over 30 years of entertaining happy customers spells success for Ludo, the staff and, most importantly, the food!

Empire Modern British Restaurant

The steak ad-venture IT’S not exactly a hard life being a restaurant reviewer because you get to feast on some of the finest cuisine.

You also sample amazing wines and enjoy some wonderful restaurants. But there is the occasional downside. The wonderful Safari centre is the home of four Venture Restaurants, and last week I was fortunate enough to dine at Empire Modern British Restaurant & Steak House, to give it its full title! And it does everything it says in the name. Which is when the downside occurred. There is just so much choice, so many different dishes to sample and only one decision to make. The table next to us were enjoying the Fish and Chips, which is something I’ve enjoyed

at Empire before. The key is the freshness of the cod. Eventually, I decided to try the Steak Tartare, which is such a hard dish to get right. You’d think there is nothing to it, but you would be greatly mistaken. The meat has to be the right temperature, the dish has to be mixed correctly - and in a certain order! Tastes vary, so the seasoning needs be measured, and even then it’s easy to get the texture wrong. There was never a moment’s concern as the waiter prepared the dish exactly to my requirement. It’s a dish that seems to put some diners off but if you haven’t tried it, I urge you to do so here. It’s tasty, light and, at the price, an

22nd November - 28th November 2013

amazing starter. My colleague opted for the Seared Queen Scallops with the Crispy Belly Pork. This was served with the delicious creamy peas, which are an Empire speciality. Again, scallops seem a simple dish, but they are easily overcooked. Ours were perfect and went really well with the pork. Having thoroughly enjoyed the Ham Hock and amazing Beef Wellington on previous visits, I elected to sample the Steak and Ale Pudding for my main course. The steak is the same 28-day aged variety used in the other dishes. And while the mushrooms and carrots are great, it’s all about the gravy. The thyme is not overpowering, while the brilliant Speckled Hen beer

shines through. It really is a well-crafted dish. My partner thought she would try out the steakhouse part of Empire and opted for the traditional Sirloin Steak. While the steak in my pudding was dry aged, these cuts are wet aged and nicely marbled. This gives the steak great flavour and, while I understand that some people like their steaks well done, you need to retain the moistness for that great sirloin flavour. Along with the house special thrice cooked chips, it was another first-rate dish. You always know when you are in a Venture Restaurant because the standard of service is so high and the Empire crew maintain the benchmark: always at-

tentive and service with a smile. As it should be. Finally, if you are a wine-lover, then stop by Empire. They are refreshing their wine cellar, and we were lucky enough to sample a few of the new options.

One in particular hit the heights; a deep-red crianza 1492 Santa Fe, which was a real delight. Perfect with the meat dishes, easy on the palette, it’s a wine to ask for when you are next in Empire.

Meson Era Las Mozas restaurant

The T-bone steak was bigger than the plate! IF you want to sample typical Canarian cuisine, or even a huge rack of ribs, you must visit the exquisite Meson Era Las Mozas restaurant in Valle San Lorenzo.

It is known affectionately as The Courtyard by the British community. although some stick to The Ribs. But whatever the label, the food is spectacular. The spacious premises do, indeed, feature a courtyard with a tree in the middle, as well as a beautiful restaurant inside. This is a veritable oasis tucked away down a tiny side street of Valle San Lorenzo behind the

Page 44

catholic church. If you’re coming from the Los Cristianos direction, turn right just past Dorta, the kitchen company, and follow your nose until you come across it, on the right, complete with car park. Las Mozas has been there for 13 years, so if

you’ve lived here for a while, you will surely have been there at least once. If not, you don’t realise what you’re missing! Some friends, happy to sit at home most nights, venture out for a meal two or three times a year. And guess where they go? Always! And

always ribs! And no wonder! It was a lovely evening so we chose to sit outside in the covered courtyard area (where they allow smoking), complete with real hanging plants and a whole host of long trestle-like tables, ideal for large groups. On colder evenings, less-hardy folk slip inside to the cosy restaurant. With a bottle of Dorada and glass of Canarian red wine in hand, we perused the multilingual menu, which is definitely a meat-lover’s delight. To be fair, if you’re vegetarian, it’s not the place for you, although they will cater for you if necessary Hot bread, “Mojo” sauce, both green and spicy red, together with the not-to-be-missed home-made Ali Oli (garlic mayonnaise) were

brought to the table. To begin, we shared a reasonably-priced dish of garlic prawns, which were fresh and simply delectable, accompanied by a huge mixed salad. Las Mozas is famed for its ribs, but we felt like breaking with tradition. So for the main event I chose beefsteak; two large pieces of thin steak graced my plate. In fact, so big were they that there was no room to add the salad, or the melt-in-your-mouth Canarian Potatoes. The meat was succulent and tasty, which tells you exactly why people return time after time. My work colleague chose the T-bone steak, which was bigger than the plate itself. But he made good progress tucking into it until the sheer size defeated him. In fact, we simply had no room left for dessert but enjoyed two cups

of their tasty coffee instead. All in all we had a superb evening. It is spotlessly clean, you get attentive, excellent service and the main reason you go there is for the food, which was spot-on. To reserve a table, call 922 765 597. The restaurant now opens for lunch and goes straight through to the evening for dinner. It’s not that long since they closed for a siesta and reopened in the evening, which suggests that business, as it should be there, is booming! Las Mozas is open six days a week and is closed on Mondays. There is ample carparking and they are now taking bookings for Christmas parties, for which they have a set menu. For more information check out their website www.eralasmozas.com - or find them on Facebook.

McLaren and Grayson honoured by the RAC By Jav THE best of British engineering was saluted by the Royal Automobile Club at their Pall Mall headquarters in London on Tuesday. The 2013 Dewar Trophy, for outstanding British technical achievement, was awarded to McLaren Automotive for their work on the conceptualisation, development and commercialisation of their pioneering, sellout McLaren P1 supercar. And the Simms Medal went to Lord (Paul) Drayson for setting four electric world landspeed records with his revolutionary, all-electric racing car. The Dewar Trophy has a lineage of winners, dating back to 1906, and previous holders include Rolls-Royce in 1907 for their 40.5hp engine;, and

Dunlop in 1957 for work developing disc brakes and modern tyres. The British Motor Corporation and Alec Issigonis were feted for the original Mini in 1959; Jaguar were in the driving seat in 2003 for their ground-breaking, allaluminium chassis, and the Ford Motor Company received the award last year for their EcoBoost drivetrain. A unanimous decision by experts on the Dewar Technical Committee, chaired by John Wood MBE, ensured that McLaren’s Automotive team were recognised for setting themselves challenging and visionary targets. They used an advance hybrid system, not only to achieve a dramatic reduction in CO2 levels, but also to use the system to boost performance and speed the car up.

McLaren have achieved all they set out to do with the P1, with all 375 examples of the model set to be built at the advanced McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, Surrey - already sold. Owners will be able to change driving modes at the flick of a switch between various modes, ranging from Normal, Sport, Track, E Mode and Race, the latter mode lowering the car’s ride height by 50mm. The McLaren P1’s aerodynamic package is particularly innovative, with other novel features such as SiC impregnated brake discs and a hybrid pack cooling system. It is a remarkable example of the integration of novel and advanced systems. The Simms Medal, recognising a genuine contribution to motoring innovation by individuals or companies who also

exemplify the spirit of adventure, quite rightly went to Lord Drayson for his world records for sub-999kg vehicles. Lord Drayson was also honoured for championing new automotive technologies, and daring, successfully, to go out and demonstrate their potential in the most extreme manner. Lord Drayson and his team have successfully attacked the EV land speed record for electric vehicles with outstanding displays and demonstrations of the capabilities of electric vehicle technology. Under the Lord’s visionary direction, he and his Drayson Racing Technologies team have created and built the Drayson B12/69 EV LMP-type race car, featuring Drayson’s own high-performance electric drivetrain. Lord Drayson used this

car to set a flying mile record for the category at 205.139mph, capturing the British land speed record for cars of any propulsion type driven by their wheels. He also set a standingstart, quarter-mile record of 9.742secs. These records display all the capabilities of electric vehicle technology, of which Lord Drayson has been a consistent champion. Ben Cussons, Chairman of the RAC’s Motoring Committee, said:

“We are pleased to recognise outstanding achievements by the British automotive industry. “Part of the raison d’être of the Royal Automobile Club has always been the promotion of all things motoring, never more so than in tough, economic times. “Drawing attention to automotive innovation is an important part of our contribution to this vibrant part of the manufacturing industry.”

Why it’s important that drivers register their correct details By Emma Swain MOST people adhere to the laws, rules and regulations of their native country. But when they live in another one, such as Tenerife, they seem to forget that the same rules generally apply.

If you change your address in the UK, you are legally obliged to advise the DVLA so that the information on your driver’s licence and car log book are amended and up to date. Why then, we ask, do so many not do this here? It is important to note that the Tráfico office (Dirección General de Tráfico, or DGT in short) deals with things slightly differently from

the UK. But keeping your address on your driving licence and car log book (Permiso de circulación) up to date and CORRECT is very important. In the past, addresses were shown on both a driving licence and the cars Permiso de Circulación. But this has changed to ensure they fall in line with the Data protection laws regarding the protection of personal data. In my opinion, this is also safer because,

22nd November - 28th November 2013

should your car be stolen with the documents inside, a thief cannot then go to your property to continue with a burglary. When you first buy a car, the address on Tráfico’s records will be the one shown on a TASA form which was filled out. If this address was incomplete or incorrectly recorded, for any reason, then you may, potentially, have problems in the future. For example, if you

incur any fines etc, as a result of speeding, which are recorded from a mobile or fixed camera, these are sent to the address shown on Tráfico’s (DGT) records. If you have a Spanish licence or foreign licence inscripted, or intend to get one, then the address provided for that transaction WILL SUPERSEDE any other provided. The address held on the Conductores department of Tráfico is

always the one to which any official notifications are sent. If you are a “Swallow”, or do not live here permanently, it is quite likely that you won’t be around to receive the letter sent by normal post, or sometimes to sign for a letter, which has a time limit for collection. In these circumstances, often the first you would know anything about this is when you find an embargo on your bank account. This is likely to be far higher than the original fine because costs and interest are applied following the Tráfico procedure. To avoid this, you may apply for a digital certificate and register for online correspondence. This means you will receive an e-mail, which should prompt you to check your online correspondence. You would then have the opportunity to iden-

tify the driver, if applicable, write an appeal or provide any documents relating to the fine. Permanent residents may also do this if they wish, and/or check that their address is full and correct at Tráfico. To change your address at Tráfico, you will need to provide anup-to-date Certificate of Empadronamiento, along with your passport and NIE/Green Certificado de Residencia and the appropriate forms completed. Tráfico’s system does not permit them to enter long addresses so, for those living in the South, we usually recommended ensuring that the complex name, block number and door number are correct And while a street name is required on the form, this would be omitted if there were not space, as the Post Office tends to sort by complexes rather than street names.

Charity shop volunteers are feted by Lions again THERE was a distinct oriental setting for around 30 staff from the Tenerife Sur Lions Club Charity Shop, who gathered for a special Sunday lunch in Silencio.

It took place at the Peking Garden restaurant and was the fourth of its kind, organised by the Lions as a gesture of appreciation and thanks for the dedication and hard work these volunteers have shown throughout the year. Much of the ability to continue the work of the Tenerife Sur Lions Club lies with these folk, who staff the two shops and help run them with their good-natured enthusiasm. But it’s not all hard work; there is a social and fun side, too, as the lunch proved. With two challenging quizzes adding to the genial buzz of conversation and an excellent banquet meal, there was a real party atmosphere. Answers to the quizzes were revealed after the meal, accompanied by much good-humoured banter, inspired by Master of Ceremonies Ken Sadler. Ken, in his usual witty manner, reassured restaurant staff that the numbers being called for the prize bingo were not additional orders to the already-excellent

meal, much to their relief and laughter. Lions President Norman Goodall MBE had a word of appreciation for all the hard work undertaken by every volunteer in fund-raising, enabling the Lions’ vital work to continue. He pointed out that over the years, they had helped raise funds to provide holidays for disadvantaged and challenged children, and an annual Christmas party for others. And, he stressed, they had each played a key role in continuing the on-going Lions organisation’s commitment to helping meet the needs of the local community. Norman further emphasised that with the growing impact of austerity measures, the Lions were providing more and more help with local needs, laying emphasis to the Lion’s Scholarship Award. This was introduced recently to help talented but disadvantaged students realise their potential of obtaining a university degree. Finally, he reiterated the real role all Lions volunteers play in the ability of Tenerife Sur Lions Club to help meet the needs of others less fortunate. One thing is for sure: the Lions volunteers cannot be accused of “all work and no play makes for a dull charity shop”. Certainly not this fantastic group!

The Accion refuge is wholly responsible for each dog, and the staff of Aktiontier - its German sponsor - will do all the necessary paperwork and meet you at both airports. In Germany, the dog will be collected upon your arrival at the cho-

sen airport. Please email acciondelsol@gmail.com or call 922 778 630 for more information if you are going to any of these destinations and would like to help. It is becoming harder and harder to get the dogs adopted, along with so many coming in to the refuge. So please, think very carefully before allowing your dog to get pregnant because Tenerife refuges are full of unwanted dogs. That is why a sterilisation and castration programme is the genuine way forward to help this crisis on the island.

Every single dog at Accion del Sol is castrated or sterilised, ensuring no unwanted litters, which would only add to the existing problems. Puppies have been coming into the refuge in droves, so please visit the refuge if you would like to adopt one of the many dogs looking for new loving homes. Marion Gonzälez, who runs the refuge, is always happy to show people around and answer any questions they may have. It is situated by the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological park and the windmills.

Who’ll give Madi a home? MADI, Massi and Missi are still looking for their forever homes. They are sweet little girls, just 14 weeks old, who will be small-to-medium-sized when fully grown. An adoption fee of 140 euros applies, for which your dog will be fully vaccinated, chipped to your name and sterilised at six months of age. Call Sue on 629 388 102 for more information. Foster carers needed We need foster carers urgently, so if you could foster a Live Arico dog, please get in touch. It won’t cost you anything because all

expenses are covered by us including food. The work is rewarding, so please consider it. Our 2014 Calendar This year’s calendar, produced by Steve Sands and Siobhan

Ferguson, is as good as ever. It’s on sale now at our shops and events, so grab yours quickly to avoid disappointment. A minimum donation of 2.99 euros is all we ask. Hope you enjoy it. Shop volunteers We need volunteer assistants in the Los Cristianos charity shop. If you can spare a few hours a week, please call Kel on 622 829 073. Charity Shop news THE Swallows are here, buying up everything in sight. If you have quality unwanted clothes, cds,

dvds, shoes, household items or children’s clothing, call Siobhan on 630 857 626. And do come and see us, we have shops in Los Cristianos, Calle Revron, near Churchills Bar, and San Eugenio, opposite Hotel La Nina by Amandas bar at the Las Carabelas complex. Both shops open from 10am-4pm Monday to Friday, and until 2pm Saturdays. Kel even opens the Los Cristianos shop on Sundays, so come and have a browse, bag a bargain and help the animals.

Not that Tenerife cared a jot as they returned with another fine point to take their unbeaten run to five matches. Tenerife bossed the first half as Numancia failed to get to grips with their opponents’ five-man midfield. Inigo Ros, Aitor Sanz and Quique Rivero kept the game tight and strangled the life out of the Numancia attack. At the back, it was great to see Baltasar Rigo make his first

Tenerife old boys had awful matches for Numancia. Julio Alvarez showed his old Santa Cruz form, while Natalio was so poor he was taken off. I must confess that I cheered! Tenerife were determined to keep it tight and, though they sat a little too deep, they never really gave Numancia much hope until the last 10 minutes. But when the hosts

start of the season - and he had a stormer! A pre-season injury has seen him kicking his heels as Bruno cemented his place alongside Carlos Ruiz. But Bruno’s injury last week opened the door, and Rigo smashed it open. Numancia fans were groaning as Rigo grew in stature, and he enjoyed himself against his former club. Thankfully, the two

had their chances, they found young keeper Roberto too good. Full credit to the lad because I didn’t think he would step up. But with the confidence growing, he has produced. He can still flap at times, and he needs to work on his positioning and kicking. But the signs are positive and he made a couple of cracking saves to send the lads home with a point, and a bit of breathing space from the drop zone. We always knew this league would be tight, and last weekend proved it again. I said in the last issue that Eibar were decent, and Tenerife’s win over them in Santa Cruz looks even better after Eibar spanked Real Madrid Castilla 6-0. Ditto that 2-0 win over Deportivo. We now have a fine defensive record in the division, and a win at home against Real Jaen on Sunday could send us top 10. Like us and Eibar, Jaen came up last season and have started well. They were spanked a couple of times on the road in the first few weeks, but they have got themselves sorted out. They beat Hercules at

the end of October and then blitzed Barca B 3-0. Last weekend they destroyed an out-ofsorts Real Zaragoza 3-0 and, in short, they are flying. Tenerife must watch their danger man Mejia. The Honduran is in the form of his life and has already bagged nine goals. Like many, he is on the books of Udinese/ Granada and last season was at Vitoria in Portugal. Some niggly injuries held him back but now fit, he is showing the potential he had at La Coruna in La Liga a few years ago. Jaen have bags of experience with old war horses such as 35-yearold Oscar Quesada, who is enjoying an Indian summer. He’s been scrapping in division three for years, but has now

hit four goals in eight matches at the higher level. And then there is an old favourite who will get a great hand when he steps on to the Heliodoro turf. Richie Kitoko spent 18 months on loan for Tenerife. He joined at the end of the relegation season, but the lively midfielder battled for the shirt. We were delighted when he returned, and he had a fine season as we just missed out in the play-offs. In fact, his final action saw him controversially sent off against Ponferradina as he conceded a penalty which, ultimately, kept us in level three. It wasn’t a foul, a pen or a red card, and it was a shame he didn’t stay. He was sent to Girona, where his troublesome groin played up again. Now fully fit again, he has made a great start to the season. And he’s a lovely lad as well. Meanwhile, tickets are on sale for the eagerly-awaited derby with Las Palmas. The match is on Wednesday, 4th December with an 8pm kick-off. Tickets have been flying off the shelf and the match is already half sold-out. A special ferry has been chartered to take home the 1,500 Las Palmas fans and, under the lights, there will be a special atmosphere. So if you want to go, be advised that ticket prices are slightly higher - and don’t sit on your hands. Tickets are never available on the day, so get yours this week!

Palms uprooted at The Pub!

PALMS Sports Bar, having suffered just two defeats in their first 19 matches, now seem to be riding the crest of a major slump.

Phoenix Bar took full advantage of that result, whitewashing bottom side Scruffy Macs, to sit just two points behind Palms with a game in hand. Mick hit a 180 for Bar 180 A during a 5-3 win over the Vikings, while Steve and Grant also hit maximums for Target Army in their 7-1 battering of the Playboys. Ourplace Naturals’ 6-2 success at Target Titans included a sixth 180 of the season for Nathan. Comeback of the Week award goes to Di-

vision One side Gaffers B. At 4-0 up, Bar 180 C could not find a way to put them to bed, and the Gaffers lads came storming back to steal a draw. Come on the Gaffers! Now where have I heard that before? Star Player of the Week award goes to a young man who has been mentioned in this column on a few occasions. Bar 180 B’s 14-yearold Beck put in a fine performance and hit a maximum during his team’s 6-2 defeat at Chipeque. One day, I’m

sure he’ll be better than his dad! Emerald Lounge took the trebles and a win at Barracuda Bytes, while Amistad 1 won the last leg to secure victory over Marilyns. And leaders Rood remain on track for the title after putting five past Naughty Nautas. The drama and surprise result in the Premier League was matched and probably bettered by one particular result in Division 2. Long-time leaders Tenerife Sun fell to their second defeat

of the season, against Phoenix Flights. Gary, Paul and Joan held it together in the trebles leg to claim a major scalp with a 5-3 victory. Second-placed Emerald Shamrocks were pushed all the way at Pas O Nadas and had to win the last rubber for a win. Bar 180 D nicked the trebles to tie their match with La Caña Lancers, while Barracuda Hunters limped back to Calleo after suffering a 5-3 loss at Sundowners. And Amistad 2 trudged forlornly back

A Tenerife triathlon for the bravest of the brave

A TRIATHLON with a difference is being staged collectively by four Tenerife municipalities on 30th November. And it promises to be something special for the competitors because it’s a world apart from the usual endurance test for athletes. What separates this swim-bike-run slog is that the cycling leg of the three-part competition will touch on Mount Teide, reaching heights of 2,200 metres. The event, being held for the first time on the Island, has been named the Tri Tenerife Sur and forms part of the Canary

Cup Long Distance Triathlon, acknowledged by the Canary Federation. It really is a tough middle-distance triathlon, starting with a 1,900m swim off the Playa de Las Vistas beach in Los Christians at 8am. That will be followed by the 96m bike ride, from Los Cristianos and passing through Chío, Cañadas del Teide, Vilaflor, Arona and back to where it began. Then comes the grande finale: a punishing 21km run, comprising three circuits of a 7km course from Playa Las Vistas to Playa el Bobo, in Costa

Adeje. All three disciplines will show off Tenerife’s stunning landscapes, ranging from the beaches to the breathtaking Teide scenery. Not that the competitors will have much time for sight-seeing! For the pleasure of enduring the most painful of days, those planning to take part who have not yet registered will have to stump up 140 euros - check out the details on www.eticketsport.com Several top triathletes have already signed up, but this great feat of endurance is open to everyone.

Knights nearly nail Hammers WE asked last week whether the Tenerife Hammers A team could go through the season unbeaten. On Tuesday, we almost had the answer because Phoenix Knights very nearly pulled off the result of the season, The Los Abrigos amigos were 5-2 and then 6-3 up, until the Hammers rallied to get back to 6-5. The final frame came down to Paul versus Bubbles, and while Bubbles started quickly Paul held his nerve to take the frame and earn the Hammers a draw. So their unbeaten run continues, even if the 100% record has gone. Gaffers A, who are still chasing, dispatched Peacocks 8-4 - a good result in a place where it’s never easy to go and get a win. Bar La Caña A, the surprise package this year, are looking to cement third place and, although under pressure from Palms A, they managed to grab a point. Palms A will rue their luck because they were in control but lost two frames by knocking in the black illegally. Hat-tip for La Caña’s Rob, who won all three frames. In fact, he has now won 11 in a row. At the bottom of Division One, Toscales A

took on Tenerife Hammers C, hoping to narrow the gap with a win. But even though captain Shaun got them off to a good start, they couldn’t build on it and Hammers C eventually won 9-3. The gap between them and Toscales A is now 10 points, so the boys from the valley now have a mountain to climb. In the remaining game of the night, Inn The Pink A pulled off a great result against Terrace A, winning 10-2 after the first four frames were shared. It looked as though a close match was in store, but ITP then won four in a row, which left the Terrace boys scratching their heads. They were in control of all four frames and should have won them all. Only they know how they lost them, but they certainly lived up to their “Suicide Squad” nickname as they threw the rest of the frames in the bin as well. In the Second Division, league leaders James Place couldn’t extend their lead at the top after being held to a draw at 2JZ. Inn The Pink B kept the pressure on with a 9-3 win over Bar La Cana B and, with a game in hand, could move level on points

Palms B held on to third place with a 6-6 draw away against Exiles B, while fourthplace Kandi 13 (formerly known as Bar 13) lost some ground after suffering a 9-3 spanking at Gaffers B. At the bottom of the table, Cosy Corner A couldn’t help their cause as they lost 10-2 against Tenerife Pool Tables, but Shorty’s picked up a credible point with a draw against Bluebell A. The two teams above them, Picasso’s A and Dreamers B, also struggled, losing to Gaffers C

and Toscales B respectively. Terrace Bar B fared better than their A team, getting a win against Hoppy’s. And Bluebell B, who could yet make the promotion shake-up, picked up all the points against Treehouse B. We have been asked to say a big “thank-you” from Andy at the Terrace Bar to all the guys who went down there on Sunday for the pool competition. As always, it was a great afternoon with some excellent pool played. Winner of the 100-euro prize was Neil,

Beaten twice, but Hodgson SO, defeat against Chile and defeat against the old foe Germany … and all the doom-and-gloom merchants are sticking knives into England’s back. I have seen quotes of “not good enough”, “lack passion”, “average players” … the list could go on. You always want the team you support to

Page 54

win, but sometimes you need to look at the bigger picture. These Wembley games were just friendlies, offering an opportunity for the manager to try different formations and have a look at different players. So too much should never be read into the result. Roy Hodgson will have learnt a lot from

both games, and he will have taken good points and bad from the performances. He knows where things need adjusting, and he will endeavour to put them right by the time the 2014 World Cup in Brazil rolls around. I feel after these performances that he will take a team with a blend of youth and

experience, with one eye on the 2016 European Championship because, let’s face it, England are not going to win the World Cup. In my opinion, there are at least seven or eight teams better than them and, at best, we will reach the quarterfinals. So let’s not get too despondent at these latest setbacks.

Chile gave us a good flavour of how the South American teams play, and Sanchez is some player, though not always in fashion at Barcelona. A Premier League club would do well to try to bring him in. The Germans offered a sterner test and I don’t think we fared too badly against what was

a strong line-up But I do believe they had another couple of gears they could have moved through, and that they are the only European team capable of lifting the trophy in Brazil. On a plus side, Joe Hart had a good game, which will help his confidence. And I felt Adam Lallana did well against the Germans;

Premier League preview By Adi Benson WITH the international break now over, we return to the fast pace of the Barclay’s Premier League.

Most players are back with their clubs relatively unscathed, and they will be getting down the business of points-gathering this weekend. So here’s what we have to look forward to: Everton v Liverpool The form book is ripped up when it comes to the Merseyside derby. The bragging rights of a city are at stake, so expect a blood-and-thunder game. Everton managed only a point last time out at Crystal Palace, but Liverpool were in fine form, putting four past a hapless Fulham. The key man will be Luis Suarez, who will have had a long trip back from international duty with Uruguay. Roberto Martinez must be hoping this leaves him tired in what will be his first derby game since taking over at Everton. Prediction: away win Arsenal v Southampton This is an interesting match-up as both teams play attacking football, at pace. Southampton are the League’s surprise package, but they are value for money as they sit a lofty third in the table. Arsenal will be looking to bounce back from

Suarez holds the Mersey key

their 1-0 defeat at Man Utd. But should they slip up at home, Southampton can move level on points with them. Prediction: draw Fulham v Swansea The pressure is really on for manager Martin Jol at Fulham, who find themselves in the bottom three. Another home setback and he could find himself out of a job. Swansea have not been firing on all cylinders so far, either, but they look the stronger of the two teams. If Fulham are to survive as a Premier team, these are the games from which they need to take points. Prediction: away win

Hull v Crystal Palace Hull’s home form has helped them to a fairly decent start to the campaign, and they will be looking forward to welcoming a poor Palace side to the KC Stadium. Although Palace picked up a point against Everton in their last game, they are still rooted to the bottom of the table and managerless, at the time of writing. They have a huge mountain climb, but this game could be a good way to start that ascent. Prediction: away win Newcastle v Norwich Newcastle have hit a little form of late, beat-

ing Chelsea and Spurs in their last two outings. So they will be looking to continue where they left off, hoping the international break hasn’t affected their rhythm. Norwich have been struggling so far this term, but a solid win against West Ham has put them back on track. They now need a consistent run to ease the pressure on manager Chris Hughton. Prediction: home win Stoke v Sunderland Both teams return to action on the back of good results, Stoke scoring a late equaliser for a 3-3 draw at Swansea, and Sunderland securing a big three points

against Man City. But they are both struggling at the wrong end of the table, and the points from this game are essential. That could lead to end-to-end stuff - or a cagey affair! Prediction: draw West Ham v Chelsea Hammers need to start scoring goals, but with Big Sam insisting on a system which doesn’t include a striker, it is hard to see where they will come from. Chelsea are like a wounded animal coming in to this game after dropping points against Newcastle and West Brom, so this could end up being a damage-limitation exercise by the home side. Prediction: away win Man City v Spurs This looks a great game on paper, but neither team have really got into their stride so far. Spurs are struggling to kill off teams, and you never know which Man City is going to turn up. Both teams have Champions League aspirations, but they will have to raise their games to realise them. Andre Villas Boas needs to trust Jermaine Defoe, and Manuel Pellegrini needs to sort his defence out. Prediction: home win Cardiff v Man Utd Players always have a

habit of scoring against their previous teams, and you wouldn’t bet against Frazier Campbell getting on the score sheet for Cardiff. Although United got the better of Arsenal last time out, their recent form is patchy, and these are the sort of games that they have struggled in. The fear-factor of playing United has gone so far this season, and teams always raise their games. So expect Cardiff to coming out fighting. Prediction: home win West Brom v Aston Villa With both teams in mid-table, 10th and 11th respectively, this promises to be a good game, especially with local pride at place. Villa have been struggling with goals, but they scored a couple against Cardiff, while West Brom are still aggrieved at not taking all three points at Chelsea. That was down to the ref awarding a highlycontroversial, last-minute penalty, for which they received an apology this week from the official. It was scant consolation, but this game offers both teams a chance to climb up the table. Prediction: home win

n will take some positives... he may just squeeze on to the plane! So let’s not be too despondent and let’s look forward to doing what we do best: cheering on the losing quarter-finalists! We now know all the teams going to the World Cup in Brazil 2014 following this week’s play-offs. There were some great games and,

as they say, it matters most when there is money on it! The game with top billing was Sweden v Portugal which, of course, pitted two of the world’s best players against each other, with the ultimate prize at stake. And the winner was … Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal after he put on

22nd November - 28th November 2013

a one-man show in both games. He scored four goals, including a sizzling hattrick in Sweden, and single handedly booked their ticket to Brazil. Ibrahimovich tried to inspire Sweden, scoring twice in the second leg, but it wasn’t enough and now he will miss out. Never short of his own

confidence, though, he said: “One thing is for sure - a World Cup without me is nothing to watch, so it is not worthwhile to wait for the World Cup.” France came back from two goals down against Ukraine, winning 3-0 in Paris and ensuring qualification, Croatia saw off plucky Iceland and Greece

squeezed past Romania to book their seats. In the African playoffs, Nigeria and Ivory Coast qualified with wins over Ethiopia and Senegal respectively. Ghana got through by beating Egypt, and Cameroon are off to Brazil after seeing off Tunisia. The last African team to get through

were Algeria who qualified in front of Burkina Faso. The two games ended 3-3 on aggregate, but their away goal saw them through. And last but not least, Uruguay and Mexico make up the final two places after beating Jordan and New Zealand. At least they haven’t got far to go!
