Tenerife unites against our domestic violence

THE people of Tenerife have made it abundantly clear that they will no longer tolerate domestic violence.

Over 200 residents gathered at the doors of Adeje Town Hall at midday on Monday and began with a minute’s silence. They were there to demonstrate their total rejection of this thuggery, which has accounted for the lives of 45 women in Spain this year. The ceremony was part of a series of activities put in place by Adeje’s Equality Councillor Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz, to mark International Day against Domestic Violence against Women. This official public display, organised by Adeje Council, was led by Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, supported by councillors, Town Hall staff and students from Los Olivos secondary school. And their message was absolutely clear: “Just say NO!” The Mayor also read an institutional, joint manifesto from all Tenerife’s southern boroughs and towns, which hammered home the general mood of people here in

the South. Fraga said: “Yet again this year, we are saying it loudly and strongly, because South Tenerife has reunited to show, via the network of towns and the departments of Equality, our utter rejection of any form of violence against women. “Despite the laws passed and the resources that exist to care for victims of domestic violence every year, there is a bone-chilling number of women being murdered. “This year so far, 45 women have died and thousands more live day

to day with violence. They also suffer psychologically and physically because of that threat. “And, of course, we must not forget the children, who are the invisible victims as a direct result of this violence.” The Mayor added: “Reality requires us to look to our young people. This is fundamental for three reasons. “Firstly, we are concerned at the rise in the number of sexist crimes by adolescents, and the increase in victims this year is the worst in 30 years. “Secondly, because it

is never too soon to discuss and make people aware of domestic violence. “Finally, the age at which young people enter into relationships is dropping every year, and we are concerned that, despite our best efforts to date, a section of our youngsters are continuing to display the kind of macho behaviour which promotes and encouraged inequality. “Because we want a society which is more just and more equal, and an Adeje that is inclusive, we state in no uncertain

terms our total and absolute rejection of this social blight.” The Mayor also pledged: “We reiterate our commitment and responsibility as an administration to further promote all the means necessary, and at our disposal, to prevent, protect and report abuse where necessary.” The manifesto also took on board the commitment by relevant bodies to continue working in schools and colleges to promote values of equality and models of non-violent

behaviour. That task, reads the document, is not confined to the classroom but must continue in the playground, the home and the wider community. Fraga said: “With this manifesto, Adeje Council has renewed its promise to defend the inalienable, universal rights of women.” The movement sparked similar demonstrations around the world on Monday, and here in Tenerife, it was also heralded in Santa Cruz, where Mayor José-Bermúdez (pictured below) presided over the event at City Hall. Supporters there also held a minute’s silence, followed by the reading of a manifesto, saying: “Santa Cruz says no to gender violence”. Bermudez said: “Santa Cruz, its institutions and its citizens cannot do anything but redouble their efforts, stay committed and act towards making the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women a reality.” The ceremony held at the Plenary Hall, was attended by councillors from all political groups, who were told by Bermudez: “Each of us living in Santa Cruz is invited to say No to violence against women.”

Death of a TV Professional

Ron Howard’s Canarian plug OSCAR -WINNING film-maker Ron Howard has been doing more than his fair share to promote the Canary Islands. La Gomera will receive an estimated five million euros via the filming of In The Heart of the Sea on the beaches of Tapahuga and Playa de Santiago. The Warner Brothers production has given

rise to the employment of some 200 extras from La Gomera and La Laguna, not to mention the income generated from the 400-strong cast and crew, who are set to remain on the island until 8th December. However, the revered director is also using social media to promote the film which, in turn, is bringing a more global focus down on the Canaries, and La Gomera in particular.

LEWIS COLLINS, co-star of Seventies cult TV show The Professionals, has died at his Los Angeles home at the age of 67.

Collins, tough-guy Bodie alongside Martin Shaw’s Doyle, lost his five-year battle against cancer on Wednesday and died peacefully, surrounded by his wife and three sons. His agent said in a statement: “Privacy is asked for at this very sad time.” Shaw paid tribute to his co-star, saying: “I was very sad to hear today that Lewis has died. “We spent a very tough four years together in making The Professionals, and shared in the production of what has become an icon of British television. “He will be remembered as part of the childhood of so many people, and mourned by his fans. I send my love and condolences to

his family, and the great many who will miss him.” Collins, who was born in Birkenhead, on the Wirral, lived in Los Angeles in recent years with his wife, Michelle, whom he married in 1992, and their sons Oliver, Elliot, and Cameron. He became a household name through The Professionals, which was renowned for its Seventies dress sense, Ford Capris and a rulefree approach to policing. But he was seldom seen on TV after the series in 1981 and was even deemed “too aggressive” when he auditioned for a James Bond role the following year.

Collins began his working life as a hairdresser before playing drums and guitar in pop groups. He had a number of other jobs before deciding he wanted to become an actor. His training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and performances on various theatre tours stood him in good stead for the 1977 role that would make him famous. Three years beforehand, he actually made his TV debut in an episode of Z-Cars, another memorable TV police series. Away from television fame, his best-known role was as an SAS officer in the 1982 film Who Dares Wins. But

six years later he was back on TV as Sergeant George Godley in the 1988 mini-series Jack The Ripper. He even applied to join the Territorial SAS, a unit open to part-time reservists. But despite passing the entrance tests, he was turned down because of his fame. Collins enjoyed bit parts in a number of popular TV programmes, but after disappearing under the radar for a while, he joined The Bill, another hugely popular police show on TV. He played Dr Peter Alan, a research scientist in need of police protection, in a 2002 episode, which was to signal the end of his TV work. Early last year, Collins resurfaced again, cast as Earl Godwin in the historically-based feature film production of 1066, although he withdrew from the project in June this year.

Torrential rain causes chaos

The western Canary Islands were hit with high winds and heavy rain on Thursday, with La Palma the worst effected. Schools were closed and emergency services were at breaking point as the extreme weather took it’s toll.

Page 4

El Hierro and La Gomera suffered while the west coast of Tenerife took a battering. The morning rush hour was chaos as roads into Los Cristianos were overwhelmed with traffic problems brought on by the heavy rain.

There were numerous accidents and the TF1 was essentially a car park for many hours. The Spanish mainland has also been hit hard with many regions experiencing unseasonally high rainfall

while many northern regions have had heavy snowfall. As we go to press there are over 30 weather warnings in place, but conditions will improve in the Canary Islands over the weekend.

Saatchi advertises Lawson woes… Domestic Goddess faces questions NIGELLA LAWSON, TV’s “Domestic Goddess”, was said by her ex-husband Charles Saatchi to be “off her head on drugs” in this week’s sensational start to the trial of their two personal assistants.

Italian sisters Elisabetta and Francesca Grillo are on trial at Isleworth Crown Court, accused of stealing £685,000 via the wealthy couple’s credit cards. But even before the hearing got underway, Mr Saatchi told the judge that his ex-wife and famous TV chef - together with her daughter, were so drugged up that she allowed staff to spend “whatever they liked”. Judge Robin Johnson read out an email sent from Mr Saatchi to Ms Lawson, which read: “Of course, now the Grillos will get off on the basis that you [and your daughter] were so off your heads on drugs that you allowed the sisters to spend whatever they liked and yes, I believe every word they have said.” The reference to the email formed part of legal arguments ahead of the trial, which began on Wednesday. The sisters, both of Bayswater, west London, deny fraudulently using company credit cards to spend up to £300,000 on luxuries, including designer clothes and first-class air travel, between 2008 and 2012. The court was told that Ms Lawson had a “tacit understanding” with the sisters that they could keep spending, as long as they did not “shop her” to Mr Saatchi over the supposed drug-taking. Anthony Metzer QC, representing both sisters, said: “This relates to Ms Lawson’s alleged taking of Class A and Class B drugs and her unauthorised use of prescription drugs. “This is a matter highly relative to the defence because, in a nut shell, we respectfully submit she hid a guilty secret from her hus-

band. She did not want him to know about her use, particularly, of cocaine. “Because the defendants were fully aware of her illicit drug use, she consented to their expenditure on the understanding that there would be no disclosure to her husband of her drug usage.” He added: “It would not have been verbalised, but it would be along the lines of, ‘you do this for me, I do that for you’. “If Ms Lawson was aware of the money they were spending, and allowed it to go on because she did not want them to reveal her drug-taking, then they are not guilty.” When the judge queried whether there was a spending limit, Mr Metzer replied: “No, I do not think there was. This is an unusual case because the complainants are not in the same financial bracket as most witnesses. “We are talking about substantial sums of money but we are also talking about extremely wealthy people.” He added that Mr Saatchi had told lawyers he did not know about Ms Lawson’s alleged drug-taking during their 10-year marriage and found out only as they were splitting up. “There was a culture of secrecy within Nigel-

29th November - 5th December 2013

la Lawson’s marriage,” said Mr Metzer. “If Mr Saatchi is telling the truth, then Ms Lawson is a habitual criminal.” After the jury was sworn in, prosecutor Jane Carpenter opened the case, saying the trial “relates to the high life lived by Francesca and Elisabetta Grillo. The sort of life you may often see portrayed in glossy magazines.” Defence lawyers had argued that the Grillo sisters would not get a fair trial, but the judge disagreed. The prosecutor said the sisters were “employed to ensure the smooth running of Ms Lawson and Mr Saatchi’s household”,. Their duties included looking after the couple’s children and sometimes going on holiday alone with the children. They lived rent-free, with Elisabetta paid £25,000 a year, and Francesca £28,000. When the sisters were confronted over their alleged spending sprees, they complained that they were “being treated worse than Filipino slaves”. Rahul Gajjar, finance director for art dealer Mr Saatchi, told jurors that Elisabetta, 41, made the claim after he wrote to her and her sister about their alleged use of the celebrity couple’s credit cards. Mr Gajjar told jurors that Elisabetta and

co-defendant Francesca, 35, were initially open and apologetic about their spending spree. But after he wrote them each a letter out-

lining how the sisters would pay off their debt, which they were expected to sign, he said they became “agitated”. He added: “By this

time the defendants had already admitted their responsibility to the allegations - not least in a letter the sisters sent to Ms Lawson and Mr Saatchi.” The letter, read out in court, said the sisters were at their “utmost despair” about the issue and asked for forgiveness. Mr Gajjar said Mr Saatchi and Ms Lawson, who divorced earlier this year, agreed that the sisters should continue working for them after the alleged offences came to light early last year. The Grillos, deny the charge against them. It is alleged that, between 1st January 2008 and 31st December 2012, they committed fraud by abusing their positions as PAs by using a company credit card for personal gain. Mr Saatchi was set to give evidence as we went to press yesterday (Thursday).

Teide’s Starlight glow

THE Starlight Foundation has awarded its seal of approval to Tenerife’s Teide National Park with Starlight Tourist Destination and Starlight Reserve certificates.

It is a magnificent double accolade from the Starlight Foundation, the body responsible for the operational management of the “Starlight Initiative”. It is an international campaign, launched in 2007, which aims to promote the importance of clear skies, and to protect the atmosphere from light pollution.

The Spanish Tourist Office in the UK, equally impressed with the Island’s fabulous stargazing reputation throughout the world. It has shared it on Twitter and Facebook, and the story has also been published by CN Traveller and The Daily Mail. These Starlight recognitions are awarded to sites with low light pol-

lution that offer visitors unobstructed views of the night sky. And officials of Teide National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are delighted to have achieved the “Starlight” seal. The National Park consists of 18,990 hectares, and a key landmark is, as everyone knows in Tenerife, the 3,718-metre high Mount Teide, the

highest peak in Spain. Astronomy has been popular in Tenerife for a number of years because of the prime sky conditions at night. And another famed landmark is the Teide Observatory, to which many scientists and stargazers travel to the Island from all over the world to get perfect views of the stunning

landscape and skies. Last week, we published news of next summer’s Starmus Festival for serious stargazers. It attracted celebrated astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, plus many leading scientists and Queen’s renowned rock star and astronomer Brian May, at the initial Festival here two years ago.

Puerto’s water problem King Juan on mend KING Juan Carlos has been allowed to leave hospital following a successful post-operative period for surgery he underwent last Thursday. The operation was necessary to replace his artificial left hip with a permanent prosthesis, following an infection which led to the removal of the previous implant. That had been in position for just 12 months.

Page 6

The King was hospitalised for the shortest time possible, and his surgeon, Miguel Cabanela, estimates he will be able to resume official duties in about six weeks, provided the journeys to engagements are not over eight hours. Assuming a normal recovery, Juan Carlos should be able to walk unaided by next Spring. Meanwhile, he will be using crutches.

PUERTO de la Cruz Council installed seven water butts in local areas after last Friday’s shock restrictions to the regular supply.

Some of the tap water was deemed unsuitable for human consumption by the Health Authority, which instructed the Town Hall and water company Aqualia to restrict access to the supply in those places. But a problem which should have taken just a few days to resolve has stretched into a weeklong nightmare for residents in the seven areas, who have been given temporary water supplies. The fresh water has been made available in the following towns: Las Dehesas, La Vera,

Las Águilas, San Antonio-Esquilón, Las Arenas, San Fernando and Taoro-Malpais, which are normally supplied by the Mar Dolce reservoir. Several vehicles with loudspeakers circulated the affected regions, explaining the measures taken. They were telling residents that the water from the public supply should not be used for

drinking, or even food preparation, because of “alterations in microbiological and chemical readings”. Puerto’s Town Hall and Aqualia said on Monday that the supply had been deemed unsafe “as a precautionary measure” only and that the problem would be sorted out “within a few hours”. Not so! On Wednesday,

following the aboutturn, some 14,000 Puerto de la Cruz residents faced their sixth day without domestic water. The supply was set to be reconnected on Tuesday, then Wednesday, leaving people in the seven affected regions in a water limbo. A new filter was fitted late last year to the reservoir, which now needs another one.

The Spanish Government to cough up millions at last A TOTAL of some 5,400 million euros is owed by the Spanish Government to companies, self-employed workers and hundreds of local authorities across the country.

The Canary Islands are owed around 24m euros, 82.4% of which is destined to cover costs incurred by the Islands’ pharmacies. But the third part of the Provider Payment Plan should settle many accounts, after the Government secured longterm loans totalling nearly 4,000m euros. Around 167,000 accounts, representing 29,000 providers, can be settled in the first phase, while the second phase of 8,000m

euros is expected to be handed over in January or February. If the second phase is not paid on time, the law regarding late payments and electronic invoicing will be enforced. Any Government departments failing to settle the accounts will have the amounts deducted from their State budgets. Looking at the breakdown of who is owed what, unsurprisingly, the self-employed account for the majority (53.1%), followed by small and medium-sized businesses (PYMES, at 45.9%), and large corporations, which account for a mere 1.5% of the total owed. Since last year, a total of 826m euros has been paid out in the Canaries to settle around 160,000 locally-generated invoices.

La Gomera cruise stop

VUELTAS Port, in La Gomera’s Valle Gran Rey area, has recieved its first visit by a Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines ship.

The company has successfully applied for permission to enable

the Braemar to dock, initially on a trial basis. But it is hoped that La Gomera will become a regular stop for passenger ships in the future. Two further companies will be including stops at Vueltas in their December itineraries. José Juan Martínez, Canary Islands Ports

Director, has highlighted the opportunity that allowing cruise ships to dock in Valle Gran Rey will present. And he hopes this first visit will open talks to assess the future development of the port’s infrastructure. As the arrangements were put in place only

recently, there has been no time to organise celebratory events for the Braemar’s arrival. But the next visit may well see a huge welcome party. The Braemar is 195 metres long, and will bring over 900 passengers and 400 crew to Tenerife’s nearest neighbour.

Good to grow you!

REGULAR readers will have noticed that we have been introducing a few new features and some exciting new columnists over the last couple of weeks.

While I’m saddened that we have to say “happy retirement” to our long-standing gardening correspondent, David Hudgell, I’m delighted to welcome our latest signing, Margaret Tully. Our gardening page is fiercely popular and I’m looking forward to the new direction Margaret will take it. She has a passion for gardens and gardening, especially in Tenerife since moving here nearly 10 years ago. And she will be imparting all her knowledge about everything that’s good to grow in your gardens, on your windowsills or on your patios. She has published a book about herbal gardens, has trained as a holistic therapist and has a certificate in Bach Flower Therapy, which is plant-related. The happy-go-lucky Scot from Edinburgh also loves cooking and baking, and much of what she writes about will be allied to food, as

she demonstrates today with her Lemongrass Ice-cream! As a Scot, I’m sure she will be celebrating St Andrew’s Day this weekend, as will many people here in Tenerife. The association between Scotland and here is well-documented, from the shared passion of whisky to the “borrowing” of the Saltire flag. It’s said that the St Andrew’s Cross was adopted by the Tenerifians as a mark of honour to the fallen Scottish sailors after the legend-

ary battle of Santa Cruz in 1797. This was a fierce battle, led by a cocky Horatio Nelson, in which the locals fought tooth and nail to maintain control of Santa Cruz harbour. While Nelson outfoxed the Spanish at sea and was able to lead his men ashore, they were swiftly forced back. And it was during these land exchanges that Nelson was badly wounded, forcing the arm amputation. But Nelson’s men didn’t go down without a fight. They eventually lost over 250 men, but their courage is well-documented and a bond was forged. However, the British would never attack Tenerife again. Nearly 50 years passed before the Saltire was officially recognised as the Tenerife flag and, to this day, historians disagree on whether the Nelson link was the true inspiration. But it’s nice to think it was. Not only as symbol of the links between the adopted home for tens of thousands of Brits and this beautiful Island, but also as a fitting reminder of the courage shown by both sides during such a historic battle.

Adeje’s hotel recycling bid

ADEJE Council and recycling company Ascan Torrabonaf are offering an individual door-todoor rubbish collection service for hotels.

Their aim is to increase the recycling of glass, paper, carton and plastic to do their bit towards improving the environment. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, along with Francisco Valiño, Ascan Torrabonaf Head of Services, had a meeting last week with hotels from the borough to establish a new series of operations to improve the system of recycling in tourist establishments. The meeting was held in the offices of Ascan Torrabonaf, the company licensed to carry out cleaning services in Adeje. Twenty hotel representatives were present, as well as the Councillors for Services and for Tourism, Gonzalo Delgado Díaz and Rafael Dolado García, respectively, and council expert Román García Higuera. As the mayor explained, the aim of the

council and Ascan is to offer a door-to-door service for collecting recyclable refuse from the hotels which, until now, have had to dispose of the rubbish on an individual basis. But this way, the company and council hope to increase levels of recycling in Adeje, and also improve the borough’s overall cleanliness. Rodríguez Fraga said the initiative was part of the council-wide’s “Adeje, Clean and Health” scheme. “This is something we can only achieve with your help,” he added. “It is important to take into account that just one hotel produces more rubbish than an entire neighbourhood. “If we are serious about care for the en-

vironment, we have to seek practical measures, and in this way we can make rubbish collection easier and increase the amount of recycled items collected. “The other part of the picture is that we want to contribute to the overall image of Adeje as a tourist town which takes environmental care seriously, and is actively involved in it.” As the meeting was taking place in the Ascan Torrabonaf officer, the Mayor said he was grateful at the level of interest shown by the hotel. He added: “It is very important that you find time to call in to this facility, to see the installation and the quality of the work that goes into making sure the system works.”

Legal threat to Tenerife homes! THIS year’s amended Coastal Law, concerning the closeness of buildings to the coastline, is affecting 70 areas in the Canary Islands - and especially in Tenerife.

Residents are awaiting the Environment Ministry’s decision regarding the. closeness of buildings to the coast. Under the new law, passed last May and still subject to approval, 100 metres has been mooted a “suitable” distance from the sea for residential homes, as opposed to “coastal” structures. The Town Halls of the areas affected were given until August 2013 to submit documentation to support their case of complying with the new requirements, even though some are as little as 20 metres

Page 10

from the sea. As yet, no response has been forthcoming. With 20 areas affected, Tenerife accounts for the highest number of those implicated under the changes. These include: Salinas de Fonsalía and Varadero-Punta Negra (Guía de Isora); Mesa del Mar, Prixmar and El Pris (Tacoronte); Igueste de San Andrés, Tachero, Playa del Roque and Almáciga (Santa Cruz); Sibora-El Puertito and La Caleta de Interián (Los Silos), La Palmita (La Victoria), Las Eras, Las Arenas y La Sarnosa (Arico), Jóver y El Guincho (La Laguna), Playa de La Viuda y Playa de La Lima (Arafo). The Ministry has 18 months to make known its decision to each individual case submitted, which is, unsurprisingly, proving nothing short of a nightmare for those affected.

Foreign workers down by 24% since recession THE number of foreign workers in Spain has dropped by 24% since the recession began in 2008.

In the same period, a drop of 22% has been recorded in the Canary Islands, where there are now 21,174 fewer foreign workers, while the reduction on the mainland is around 500,000. These are the findings of a study by employment agency Randstad, published this week, which shows that the decrease by the various provinces is relatively equal. Las Palmas has dropped from around 52,000 to 41,000 overseas workers, and Santa Cruz has experienced a 10,000 fall to 34,000. The highest decline is in Castilla-La Mancha (37%), followed by Navarra (34,4%) and Castilla y León (32%). Despite the overall de-

cline, there were some increases in the foreign workforce. Asia, in particular, saw a rise of almost 19% (169,000 now

registered compared with 142,000 in 2008). And with regard to those affiliated to the Social Security sys-

tem, the biggest drop was among professionals from America: over 300,000, which is a 37.8% fall.

Petrol hunt damaging tourism? PETROLEUM giants Repsol have, for some time, been conducting studies in the ocean around the Canaries in a search of fuel.

A new study by The Institute of Tourism and Sustainable Economic Development (TIDES) claims that the studies are not worth their perceived cost to tourism. It believes that the tourism industry, as part of the socio-economic make-up of the Canaries, is highly vul-

Page 12

nerable to the project actually going ahead. The group also adds that the impact of the environmental studies has not been addressed by those carrying them out. The study, originating from the University of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, has the backing of several professors. They insist that more consideration should be given to the search for alternative and more efficient power sources which, they believe, would have a less-harmful effect on the environment and the tourism industry. It is worth noting that other areas of the world, where drilling platforms are an integral part of the economy, and visible from tourist areas, include Dubai and Long Beach, California.

Canaries pave way to make disabled access much easier

THE Canary Islands aim to become the most accessible place in Europe.

That, at least, is the objective of the regional government’s Ministry for Social Policy which outlined its plans this week. The main aim is to meet the demands of disabled residents and

visitors more completely by insisting that places comply with stringent, accessibility standards before being awarded the International Accessibility Symbol. This is granted only to buildings and open areas, where physical and environmental barriers have been removed. There are over 27,000 people receiving disability allowance in the Ca-

naries, yet in 2012 just 1,952 parking passes were issued. Last year, a sum of 65 million euros was invested to create centres to encourage more employment for people with disabilities. A note for employers: the Canarian Employment Service has a project to promote jobs for disabled people at private companies.

Subsidies exist for the creation of permanent contracts, or the conversion of temporary contracts into permanent ones, amounting to 3,907 euros per contract. Similarly, companies can achieve a full deduction of 6,000 euros in corporation tax, per person per year, if they increase the total number of employees with disabilities.

Spaniards hold key to long life SPANIARDS born in their own country are now living longer than ever - to an average age of 82.4 years.

It is the second-highest average in the European Union after Italy (82.7). And, since 1970, Spain has increased life expectancy by 10 years, from 72.4, under the latest study’s time period, between 2009 and 2011. For the first time also, an average age of 80 years has been achieved - a credit to the state of the nation’s health. The figures come courtesy of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which has presented the 2013 edition of its Health at a Glance report. And the trend within the OECD’s 34 countries

shows no sign of letting up. Spanish women can expect to live six years longer than their male counterparts, while the average difference in other developed countries is of 5.5 years. Despite the impressive figures, though, chronic diseases such as diabetes and dementia are also on the rise. In Spain, 6.5% of people aged between 20 and 79 suffer from diabetes, compared with an OECD average of 7%. As regards dementia, 6% of those over 60 suffer some form of dementia, compared with the OECD average of 5%. Infant mortality in Spain is also below the average: 3.2 deaths in those under a year old per 1,000 live births, compared with the 4.1 OECD average. It means that Spain has reduced its mortality rate by almost 23 points

29th November - 5th December 2013

since 1970. And as for traffic accidents, the mortality rate in OECD countries has fallen by more than half since 1990. However, Spain, among others, has achieved the greatest reduction of 75%, thanks to its road-safety policies. Although Spain has a percentage of adult smokers slightly higher than the OECD average (23.9% compared with 20.9%), this percentage has dropped by 25% in the last decade. As regards health-

care spending per capita, one in three OECD countries has seen healthcare spending drop between 2009 and 2011. Spain remains at the OECD average, with 9.3% of GDP allocated to healthcare. The quality of healthcare in chronic processes - such as asthma and diabetes - can be measured by hospital admission rates in pathologies. In Spain, the hospital admission rate for adults per 100,000 inhabitants for asthma

stands at 40, which is below the OECD average of 50. For diabetes, the rate is lower than 100, compared with the developed countries’ average of 150. In relation to childbirth, the rate of obstetrical trauma in Spain following instrumental vaginal delivery stands at 2.8%, compared with the OECD average of 6%. In cases of non-instrumental delivery, the rate is 0.6%, compared with the OECD average of 1.6%. The percentage of one-year olds vaccinated against Hepatitis B is 96%, which is higher than the OECD average. More than 75% of Spanish women aged 50-69 have had a mammography, compared with the OECD average of 60%.

And 7.8% of newborns weigh less than 2.5kg at birth, a figure which has improved in recent decades to stand at one point above the OECD average. Just over half of Spanish doctors (51%) are women, which is seven points higher than the OECD average, and 23% of doctors are over 55, compared with the OECD average of 32%. The decline in the fertility rate, combined with greater life expectancy, will result in 36% of the population being over 65 and 15% over 80, by the year 2050. Some 14% of those over the age of 50 provide informal care to a dependent family member, of which almost 65% are women. And this is provided on a daily basis in 85% of cases. The OECD averages are 15.6%, 62.3% and 66% respectively.

Winter death figures could increase again Spain revels in tourist record SPAIN set another superb tourism record last month, after welcoming 5,475,000 tourists.

That represented a 6.9% year-on-year increase, according to the Frontur survey, drafted by the General Subdirectorate of Tourism Information and Studies of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. Germany, France, the UK and the Nordic countries made the largest contributions to this new tourism growth. Catalonia, enjoyed the month’s largest increase, with 132,000 additional tourists. In the first 10 months of the year, the figure for tourists set an alltime record, since the Frontur survey began in 1995, clocking up 54.3 million - a year-on-year rise of 4.8%. Visitors from the Nordic countries and the UK were the main contributors. Britain tops the list for tourists to Spain - and the Canaries - in October, with a total of 1.3 million and growth of 5.8%. And despite Catalonia being the main destination, the Valencia re-

Page 14

gion enjoyed the largest growth, of 15.5%, or 30,000 additional tourists. Up to the end of October, more than 13 million British tourists had visited Spain this year, which represented a 4.6% increase and a 24% market share of all tourists. More than a million German tourists also saw Spain in October - 18.9% of the total - which was a 10.9% increase. The Balearic Islands was the main destination which, together with the Catalonia and Andalusia regions, posted the highest growth. Overall, so far this year, more than 8.8m Germans have visited Spain, a year-on-year increase of 4.7%, and a market share of 16.3%. The Nordic countries provided 474,000 tourists for Spain for an increase of 17.9%. Their favourite destination was the Canary Islands which, together with the Balearic Islands and the Region of Valencia, posted the largest increases. So far this year, more than four million Nordic tourists have visited Spain, which amounts to a year-on-year increase of 17.7%.

LAST winter’s bitter weather accounted for 31,100 excess deaths, which was a 29% increase on the previous year.

The majority of the deaths in England and Wales were among the elderly, with over-75s totalling 25,600, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). A prolonged and frozen period, which included the coldest

March since 1962, had an average monthly temperature of just 2.6C (36.7). And, together with bouts of flu peaking over the Christmas period, it helped drive up the dreadful excess-death figures. These were released amid warnings from senior doctors that A&E departments must brace themselves for an even worse winter this time around. The doctors also have serious concerns that pensioners and vul-

nerable families are being forced to chose between “heating and eating”. The ONS reported: “The number of deaths peaked in the first week of January, which coincided with a peak in rates of influenza-like illness over the Christmas weeks. “The mean number of daily deaths was higher than average for a prolonged period between February and April 2013.” The statistics office

also said excess winter mortality for last winter was highest in the North West of England and lowest in London. This bucked the trend of the previous year, when the highest excess winter death rates were observed in the capital. There were 18,000 winter-related female deaths, a rise from 13,610 the previous year, while the number of excess male deaths was 13,100 – an increase from 10,590 in 2011-12.

Rise of ‘St Peter’s bones’ the small on show in Rome retailer SALES figures for small retail businesses in the Canaries grew by 4.6% in October, compared with the same month in 2012. This figure is the second-highest in the whole of Spain, with only the Balearic Islands witnessing a higher rise (at 8.1%). The National Statistics Institute (INE)

released the figures this week. But despite a growth over last October, the first 10 months of 2013 have indicated a drop of 1.4% over the same period last year. Yet this still compares favourably with the national figure which showed the drop to be much higher, at just under 5%.

Million-dollar lottery loser A man who brought a $1m lottery-winning ticket (£618,724) from a delicatessen on Long Island, New York, appears to have been fiddled out of his prize.

The deli’s father-andson owners have been charged with duping him. When the 34-year-old man realised he’d hit the jackpot and went back to collect his winnings, Karim Jaghab, who spoke no English, fobbed him off with $1,000 (£618.724) and kept the ticket. The customer later became suspicious and re-

Page 16

turned, only for Jagab, 26, and his 57-year-old father, Nabil, to offer him $10,000 (£6,187.24) and tell him not to go to the authorities. But the jackpot winner went straight to the police, who agreed he’d won a million and arrested the Jaghabs. They were held on theft charges but, according to Newsday newspaper, their lawyer said it was a simple mistake on a payout from a lottery machine. A similar case occurred in nearby Suffolk County this year when two fillingstation clerks, and the brother of one of them, were charged with scamming a customer out of a $74,892 (£46,337) prize.

BONE fragments, said to be the remains of St Peter, have been displayed in public at the Vatican for the first time.

The nine bone pieces, once kept in a shoe box and now in a bronze case, sat at the side of the altar during a Mass at St Peter’s Square, led by Pope Francis. The Pope prayed before the fragments at the start, and later clutched the case for several minutes. Experts argue about the authenticity of the fragments, found during excavations under St Peter’s Basilica in the years after Pope Pius XI’s 1939 death. Archaeologists working beneath the building discovered a funerary monument with a casket built in his honour, as well as a Greek engraving which read “Petros eni” (Peter is here). However, no Pope has actually declared the

fragments are those of St Peter. Pope Paul VI came closest when he said in 1968 that they were “identified in a way we can consider

convincing”. Margherita Guarducci, the late Italian scholar, said the relics were given to one of the basilica workers, who stored them

in a shoe box in a cupboard. They were presented to Pope Paul VI in 1971, but had not been seen publicly since.

Phew! A whiff of sprouts can light up the Thames… AN 8ft Christmas tree on London’s Southbank was lit up on Tuesday… by Brussels sprouts!

In fact, the battery powering its lights has been made from 1,000 raw sprouts, the vegetable detested by most youngsters throughout the UK, especially at Christmas. The idea to create the unusual battery for the decorations was dreamed up by scientists from The Big Bang UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair It is the world’s first Christmas tree to be powered by these vegetables and it’s a sight to give sprout-haters everywhere a warm glow. The grand unveiling ceremony took place by the River Thames on Tuesday morning, with pupils from the City of London Academy flicking the switch. The battery providing the lights was created using five power cells, each holding 200 sprouts, which produced 63 volts. Essentially the battery works like electrolysis. Copper and Zinc electrodes are placed in each Brussels sprout to create a chemical

tree. The power is stored in a capacitor and released through 100 high efficiency LEDs. The Big Bang scientists are able to monitor the voltage on a separate display, which shows how much energy is being produced by the sprouts. Sean Miles, Director of Prototyping at Windsor-based Designworks, which made the installation, said: “The sprouts will keep generating a current for as long as they stay fresh, and do not decompose. “As long as they’re fresh, they will keep providing the electrolytes for the chemical reaction that generates the current. “The sprouts power-

reaction between the electrodes, using the vegetable’s acid and generating a current which can be stored and used to power the tree’s LEDs. ing this tree should last a month, but more can always be added if it runs out of juice.” In theory, said Mr Miles, any fruit or vegetable could be used to power the lights, and sprouts are actually the least efficient.” He added: ‘Sprouts are probably the worst vegetables to use, which makes the feat even more amazing. The more moist and fluid, the better they are at conducting electricity.” Paul Jackson, head of Engineering UK, which runs The Big Bang UK Young Scientists & Engineers Fair, said: “We want young people to think about STEM subjects in an interesting way, and are always

looking for different ways to do that. “It being the festive time of year, and with the kids’ dislike of sprouts being well-documented, using them to create a battery seemed like a unique way to achieve that aim. “Every year, thousands of pupils and teachers attend the Fair, which exists to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.” Mr Jackson added: “We want to extend the buzz of the Fair further and wider, so that even those who can’t attend are encouraged to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and maths.”

Greeks gamble with HIV jabs

Baby, what a whopper! A, 27-YEAR-OLD Shanghai woman’s gigantic baby is reckoned to be one of the largest ever born in China.

At 13lbs 10oz (6.17kg), the baby (sex not revealed), is almost double the weight of an average Chinese newborn, and both are said to be in good health. But doctors at the local hospital, where the child was born, believe the unnamed mother had overeaten throughout her pregnancy, and had spent a lot of time in bed. The new mum admitted to scoffing “a lot of fruit” during her pregnancy, which can lead to obesity because of all the sugar. Doctors said she had put on weight rapidly, which made the embryo grow way beyond the average size. The mother told Chinese state TV: “I drink one glass of milk and eat an egg every day. That’s a must since I became pregnant.” A relative added: “Soup with chicken,

pigeon and fish is normal for an expectant mother, as well as seafood.” Xu Chang’en, associate chief physician at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University, said the baby could eventually face health problems. “Obesity may affect the baby’s health in the future,” he added. “Rates of obesity and diabetes are obviously higher for an China’s biggest baby is believed to be Chun Chun, from Xinxiang city, who was 15lbs 8oz (7.04kg) at birth last year. Britain’s heaviest is thought to be Guy Carr, who weighed in at 15lbs 8oz (7.03kg) when he was born in Barrow-inFurness, Cumbria, in 1992. The Guinness World Records states that Canadian Anna Bates gave birth to the world’s heaviest baby in 1879. The child, whose parents both had gigantism - a rare condition which causes abnormal growth in children - was 23lbs 2oz (10.5kg) but lived just 11 hours.

A STAGGERING report claims that more and more Greeks are injecting themselves with HIV.

As dangerous as it sounds, it is because they want to claim hundreds of euros in benefits. The World Health Organisation (WHO), which investigated the impact of the economic downturn on countries across Europe, said HIV rates had risen “significantly” in the debt-ridden country. The group also said about half of new HIV infections were self-inflicted, allowing people to receive monthly benefits of £585 (700 euros), and a swifter admission on to drug rehabilitation programmes. Figures from the Hellenic Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, also known as Keelpno, showed the HIV infection rate in Greece had nearly tripled in 10 years - up from 3.9 in every 100,000 people in 2003 to 10.9 in 2012.

Prostitution also increased, said WHO, “probably as a response to economic hardship”. There were 1,180 HIV infections last year compared with 434 in 2003, while the disease was transmitted through injections in nearly 9% of cases in 2012. The majority of infections (53%) occur among Greek men aged 25-39. Also, Greeks were less likely than they were in 2007 to visit a doctor or dentist when they were feeling below the weather. A WHO spokesman said: “These adverse trends in Greece pose a warning to other countries undergoing sig-

nificant fiscal austerity, including Spain, Ireland and Italy. “It also suggests that ways need to be found for cash-strapped governments to consolidate finances without undermining much-needed investments in health.” Professor Jenny Kourea-Kremastinou, President of Keelpno, said in the group’s latest HIV/AIDS study that there had been an “unprecedented increase” throughout 2011 and 2012 in the number of Greeks injecting themselves with drugs. “It is widely known that HIV epidemics in the population of drug injectors are a complex phenomenon,” she add-

ed. “And any effort to stop them faces considerable difficulties, especially in an era of large-scale, socio-economic changes. “Taking into consideration this situation, public health surveillance and the evaluation of relevant prevention interventions are more crucial and necessary than ever.” Greece, experiencing its sixth consecutive year of recession, amid fearful austerity cuts, has twice been bailed out by the international community. But there is a glimmer of hope because its draft budget for 2014 predicts economic growth of 0.6%.

Growing fears for the lost and lonely A REPORT by international social group Caritas suggests that up to 200 people are living on the streets of Santa Cruz. They are destitute, without any means of support, and this year alone, says the organi-

sation, it has become involved with some 500 cases. But members have been able to accommodate just 70% of those in need, mainly through a lack of suitable places available. Many of those who have not benefited from the

assistance offered are long-term homeless, often living “on the edge”, and those who have been socially excluded for a considerable time. Ursula Peñate, from Caritas, said the mostneedy age groups were from 18-25, and then the

over-50s. The group’s particular concern is for those who had trades or careers which are no longer valued in a modern world. In other words, those who cannot re-train to enter the job market as it is now.

South Airport tests go well

A couple of weeks ago Tenerife’s north airport underwent a major crash simulation day which brought together all emergency organisations. They simulated a variety of incidents and the whole operation was a resounding success.

This week a similar operation took part at Reina Sofia airport. The simulations were so realistic that members of the public flooded Twitter and Facebook with images of ‘a major air crash at the south airport’. Like in the north airport all the emergency services and relief agencies were involved and the exercise was deemed a resounding success.

The new centre has 46 employees attached it to, will service over 77,000 citizens and deal with over 20,000 pieces of mail daily. The facility is long overdue and will become the south’s jewel in the postal crown. There are excellent work facilities, area for expansion and with the project coming in under budget, four brand new vehicles have also been purchased.

The Ferguson Files

www.canarianweekly.com

The unspeakable truth By Joe Ferguson WHEN Jimmy Savile died in October of 2011, we all remember the outpouring of grief and the tributes. We remember the news footage of thousands of mourners lining the streets and clapping as the coffin passed, making its way for burial. The day after his death, Roscoe and I had an on-air chat about it all on his Oasis Fm Breakfast Show. We both said listeners should not be shocked if and when the truth about Savile eventually emerged. Yes, we were being cryptic because, when you have heard so many rumours about the subject matter, you can’t really talk about it on the radio without substantial proof. We were asked off-air what exactly we were

getting at and again, we simply couldn’t say. Didn’t take long for it all to come out, though! I was involved with TV in Belfast years ago and the team went to interview Savile. As he talked to the host and producer of the show, they were showing concerns based on his demeanour and conduct. So it was plain to see that something was not quite right. I did see the raw footage before transmission and it was creepy, to say the least. Roscoe and I have worked in the UK broadcasting market for several years, and you get to hear many rumours. But you also get to see some things that are beyond hypocrisy and not right. Many household names you see daily on TV are not the angels and distinguished people they make you think they are. One, in particular, can be seen preaching the moral high ground. Yet I’ve seen this person with my own eyes,

Contact Joe at: www.facebook.com/joeferguson.921 Twitter: @djjoeferguson

HE is short and sweet; not in size and personality, although he could be because I’ve never met him. My Hero of the Week is Steven Moffat, the man behind what had to be the best bit of television I’ve seen on a long time. The Dr Who 50th anniversary show on Saturday was just spectacular. Even if not a fan, you can watch this as a movie and still enjoy it. But for the full effect, you must watch it in 3D. Simply brilliant. Thank you Steven!

Page 20

doing the very thing he/ she makes a good living out of telling people not to do. And I’m sure that will come out in the wash one day. On the day of Savile’s funeral, it was reported that his body would be laid to rest at a 45-degree angle so that “he could look out over the sea and country he loved so much”. On my then radio show, I laughed at this and called the people who let him have his last wish “morons”, and I went further to point out that he’d had the last laugh. The complaints came in and I was accused of showing not only a lack of respect for the dead, but producing the worst, unprofessional moment of broadcasting a few had ever heard! And, as they say, the rest is history. Earlier this week, we heard sickening accounts of Ian Watkins, singer of Welsh rock

band Lostprophets, after he pleaded guilty to a series of “depraved” child sex offences. The court heard that he filmed and kept the episodes of abuse - that took place in various hotels in London and south Wales - which were recovered by police. Some of the evidence is far too extreme to repeat in this newspaper. But if you’ve seen and heard the reports, you’ll know exactly what I mean. It seems to be becoming more common these days for monsters like these individuals to be on the news, which means two things. These acts are on the increase, and the police are doing their job in catching up with those who engage in this horrific way. So where does this leave us normal, everyday people, regardless of whether or not you are a parent? Honestly, I have no answer.

FOR the last two weeks, we’ve not been able to away from the fact that Sony and Microsoft are releasing their new game consoles, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It’s the latter which gets the Villain award of the Week. On the Xbox, you have the technology to record and upload a few minutes of yourself playing the game for which you’ve paid good money. And, bear in mind that you’ve already laid out nearly £500 for the console. You can share with friends online the delights of spending hours playing the brand-new game. And if you know how to play these things well and you are virtually shot dead, you do tend to swear at the machine and the telly you’re playing. As a matter of fact, you will swear quite a lot. So what will Microsoft do? Bleep out the swear words? No! If you use any profanity, you will be banned from online play for 24 hours! Never mind the fact that in most shooting games, the characters swear during the game to give it some kind of reality. Banned 24 hours from a device you paid £500 for to use in your own home. I’m sure it’s cheaper to get a ticket to China, where you can be banned from everything!

While the paedophile hunts out our children to abuse and take away their innocence, we are also taking that innocence away. We look like overbearing parents by watching every step, never taking out eyes of them. But kids today simply cannot be kids in the way we were brought up. I can remember saying “bye” to my parents and not seeing them all day, only to come back later that evening for supper. Nobody thought about it. So the question that seems to be asked is: “Is this a new thing?” And that answer is “No”! Savile’s sick abuse of children has now been documented back to the early Sixties. With people now having a camera in their phone, it is too easy to get footage of whatever you want, there and then. So you don’t know who is next to your family at the beach or swimming pool. The number of rules we are imposing on ourselves is getting ridiculous, and I personally feel uncomfortable about taking pics near another

family. I’m not alone in this because I have lost count of how many times I’ve been asked if it’s okay to “take a picture”, because my son is cuddling a random four-yearold and it looks cute! So where does this leave us? We will become even more over-protective and self-conscious to the point that when we do go out for the day, the whole family will be chained together! I hope not. But there’s one thing I know for sure: I’ll be doing everything in my power to make sure my kids are never put in a position where they’ll be in danger of the real monsters out there. I have to say this: in writing a newspaper column, I’m bound by law not to influence you in any way as a reader, and to comply with conduct and acceptable content. So I speak for nobody but myself, and this is only my personal opinion when I say that I’d like to be left in a room with just one of these people for 15 minutes. And as a favour to taxpayers, they never need to pay out for a jail cell!

Only in... Northern Ireland

I LIVE in a place called Lisburn. I say place, but the local council for some reason calls it a “City”.

If you ever have the pleasure of coming to the place, like the residents, you’ll be thinking: “One street makes a city?” The Christmas season approaches and the TV commercials are going nuts with: “Come to

beautiful Lisburn for all your shopping needs.” Yes we have the shops in NOT-so-beautiful Lisburn, but good luck getting to them. That one street we have is called Bow Street, and some idiot on the council gave the okay and date, in the run-up to the busiest shopping time on the calendar, to rip up and rebuild the pedestrian precinct. MasterChef: The Professionals BBC2, 20:00 The first pair of semi-finalists must prove they have the talent to win a place in the finals. They must battle head to head at one of London’s most exciting two Michelin starred restaurants, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, under the exacting eye of Ashley Palmer-Watts. They are each responsible for one of the menu’s highly complex dishes over the long evening service. Ashley then asks them to recreate one of the restaurant’s signature dishes, Salamugundy, a salad of chicken oysters roasted salsify, bone marrow and horseradish. Each element requires its own cooking method and the chefs must perfectly execute each one to achieve the balance required. Then, the two semi-finalists return to the studio for one last challenge. They must produce a main and dessert inspired by their Michelin experience in just two hours. Once Michel Roux Jr and Monica Galetti have judged their two courses, they must decide if the chefs are good enough to become Professional MasterChef finalists.

Misty boat in Burma For the first time in over 50 years, a team of wildlife filmmakers from the BBC’s Natural History Unit and scientists from the Smithsonian Institution has been granted access to venture deep into Burma’s impenetrable jungles. On a mission to scour the forests and create a diverse species list to present to the country’s policy makers, they hope to help get these forests protected. On the first phase of the expedition, the team, along with wildlife filmmakers Gordon Buchanan and Justine Evans, sets out to discover whether the mountains of western Burma are home to a population of Asian elephants that could prove critical to the survival of the species. Finding elephants in a dense bamboo forest is a challenge. Notoriously grumpy, Asian elephants are likely to charge if caught unaware. Gordon and Justine search the valleys and ridges while biologist Ross Piper follows up rumours of a second elephant herd.

The Lakes: Walking Through History Channel 4, 20:00

The second series continues, with Tony Robinson embarking on more spectacular walks through some of Britain’s most historic landscapes in search of the richest stories from our past. It was 30 years after the Romans invaded Britain that they were ready to take on the challenge of conquering the Lake District. With the toughest landscape they had encountered in the country, peopled by a rebellious tribe, it was no small task. Two full legions - 11,000 armed men marched north, led by two top generals. This extraordinary commitment was rewarded, and within a few years, the whole of Lakeland was under Roman control. Tony Robinson tackles the journey, but, as he discovers on this 50-mile walk from Penrith past Ullswater to Ambleside and on to the Irish Sea at Ravenglass, the Romans encountered beauty and danger in equal measure.

Adventurer and journalist Simon Reeve heads to Cuba to find a communist country in the middle of a capitalist revolution. In 2010 Cuba announced the most sweeping and radical economic reforms the country has seen in decades. From ending state rationing to cutting one million public-sector jobs, one of the last communist bastions in the world has begun rolling back the state on an unprecedented scale. Simon Reeve meets ordinary Cubans whose lives are being transformed. In this documentary Simon gets under the skin of a colourful and vibrant country famous for its hospitality and humour and asks if this new economic openness could lead to political liberalisation in a totalitarian country with a poor human rights record. Will Cuba be able to maintain the positive aspects of its long isolation under socialism - low crime, top-notch education and one of the best health systems in the world - while embracing what certainly looks like capitalism?

James Martin continues with his mission to improve Britain’s hospital food. Today as he continues working through the problems at Birmingham’s Royal Orthopaedic, he realises that if he really wants to affect change at more than one hospital, then he’s going to need some help. He invites some of the country’s best known chefs to his home to see if he can persuade them to give up their time for free and work to tackle the food at a hospital in their local area. Will they agree to come on board? Back in Birmingham there are tears and disagreements as James sets out to crack the problems leading to the kitchen’s terrible problem with waste. But are the team taking on board what he’s telling them? And James is invited to help with a new menu being rolled out across every NHS hospital in Wales - although an unexpected problem is quickly revealed.

On-duty consultant Sarah Robinson leads the trauma team when a nine-year-old who was hit by a high speed motorbike is air lifted to the resuscitation room at Southampton Trauma Centre. Pilgrimage with Simon Reeve BBC2, 21:00

W C choice

For centuries pilgrimage was one of the greatest adventures on earth, involving epic journeys across the country and around the world. This series sees Simon Reeve retrace the exciting adventures of our ancestors. He learns about the forgotten aspects of pilgrimage, including the vice, thrills and dangers that all awaited travellers. He explores the faith, the hopes, desires, and even the food that helped to keep medieval Britons and more recent travellers on the road. Simon embarks on a 400 mile journey to Canterbury from the north of England, beginning at the mystical Holy Island, just off the rugged coast of Northumberland. To reach the island, one of the earliest sites of Christian pilgrimage in Britain, Simon follows a line of posts marking out a crossing that emerges from the North Sea at low tide.

The UK consumes well over a billion chickens a year and, with chicken appearing on almost every takeaway and restaurant menu in the country, it is not surprising that it is Britain’s favourite meat. Nigel travels to Manchester for inspiration from local restaurants to help him spice up some recipes back on the farm in the Cotswolds. From chicken kiev to avocado dips, our shopping baskets reveal our love of foreign fare, but Nigel shows us how to make these processed foods at home. Adam meanwhile, accepts the ultimate farming challenge - to successfully grow exotic crops such as rice and Asian mushrooms in time to feed a hungry crowd of guests with a selection of homemade international dishes

Cat Ballou Channel 4, 12:15

Lee Marvin won an Oscar for his double role in Elliot Silverstein’s influential comedy western, which also stars Jane Fonda. When Catherine ‘Cat’ Ballou finds out that a corporation is making an aggressive attempt to snatch her father’s ranch, she hires the once-notorious gunfighter Kid Shelleen as protection. But she soon discovers he’s now a permanently sozzled drunk, and unlikely to be of any use against the developers’ mean killing machine, Tim Strawn. But, as things take a darker turn, Cat finds the strength and determination to fight back, by any means necessary. With its mix of daft comedy, songs and classic revengewestern theme, the film is great fun, and it’s not difficult to imagine that it provided the creative spark for Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles a decade later.

Snatch Channel 5, 22:00

Violent comedy crime caper revolving around three groups of villains intent on retrieving a missing diamond. Two friends team up with a pugilistic gypsy to fix a boxing match, but their opponent also arranges some dodgy betting with the courier of the stolen diamond, who subsequently goes missing.

For decades, Britain and America’s Cold War submarines waged a secret war of espionage against the Soviet navy. Deep in the ocean, crews were locked in a game of cat and mouse as each side battled to gain the tactical and technological advantage. After decades of silence, submariners from both the east and west are now allowed to talk more openly than ever before about how they plotted to winchoice the war beneath the waves. The west’s superior technology allowed them to secretly shadow the Soviet fleet, at close quarters, giving them vital intelligence and the upper hand if war broke out. Shadowing submarines was dangerous. The film explores close encounters between western and Soviet forces that put the lives of submariners at risk. Candid interviews with British, American and Russian submariners reveal the pressures of lengthy underwater patrols that drove them to the edge of their physical and mental limits.

Entertainment

By Jamie Drew TENERIFE has an abundance of variety when it comes to entertainment venues and the shows they offer.

www.canarianweekly.com

Little and large of The Theatre Bar! They come in all shapes and sizes, and rarely have I seen a smaller bar pack so much into its programme. The Theatre Bar in San Eugenio has been running under the current ownership for almost five years. And it has taken owner Denis Fussell a lot of hard work building the bar’s reputation and attracting regular visitors. He and his partner, Jackie, have worked the bar themselves, splitting shifts between them so they can provide their customers with the best value for money. The name of the venue conjures up all kinds of images of grandeur. But when you arrive, the size of the place might surprise you. It is a small bar - with everything on a grand scale! To start with, any venue offering an entertainment product must have a performance area or stage. But where most venues of the same size have a performance area, The Theatre Bar

has a full stage with working curtains and access from a dressing room at the rear. This bar has been designed to present shows in the best possible way. It is so much better for an artiste to emerge from back stage when presented, than to walk through the audience and enter the stage. The stage is well lit, and the sound system’s just perfect for a small bar, close to a residential complex. After all, there really is no point in having such a beautiful stage to perform on if the

sound and lighting are not right. So it is very pleasing for the resident artistes to know that these dynamics have been covered. Some 12 months ago, Denis decided to try something new in the bar. Instead of a traditional compere, he wanted a resident drag act, so he enlisted the services of the everpopular Roxy Risque. Tony, who performs as Roxy, has been on the Island for over a decade, treading the boards as a touring cabaret show and also as a resident.

He cemented the Roxy Risqué name into the Tenerife Hall of Fame during Roxy’s time at Blaydon Races, a bar which Tony ended up taking on himself for a while before moving to The Theatre Bar. Tony has built up so many different characters for Roxy and makes all her costumes which, again, are in keeping with the grand scale of things in the bar. Roxy, also a classical pianist, will regularly sit at the ivories and astound the audience with an ability to play beautifully and sponta-

neously. You can see Roxy every night at The Theatre Bar, along with some of the Island’s most glamorous performers. Karaoke will always play a part in nine out of 10 entertainment venues, and this place is no exception. But what’s so novel about The Theatre Bar is that the singers are presented on the stage by a drag artiste, who stands almost 7ft tall in some costumes, which always provides a good photo opportunity. The entertainment I have spoken about so far has enough variety to provide any venue with a top-class programme. But there is still more to come from this small bar with big ambitions. Before Denis came to Tenerife he worked as a drummer in a band, and he’s been toying with the idea of introducing a live music duo or trio into the mix for some time. That plan has now been realised, and the duo Coast To Coast are now playing there six nights a week, performing early and late sets either side of the entertainment with Roxy.

TENERIFE BOOB TROOP nip over again

What a lucky man to be trapped between this troop. Melissa Clarke, Lucy Vixen and their Page3 girlfriends are back on the rock this week creating a buzz in O’Neill’s on The Veronicas strip. As you will read in other parts of this paper, Gaz from Geordie Shore is also on the island and everywhere that Geordie went, the girls were sure to go.

DJ Johnny, resident at O’Neill’s, Oasis Fm DJ and an award winning DJ, was surrounded in his booth, much to his delight, by 6 Page3 stunners. This venue always seems to be a favourite of the reality tv celebs and the girls known as The Tenerife Boob Troop when they visit. I’m sure it has a lot to do with DJ Johnny who is a brilliant party DJ and has this venue rocking every night. You deserve all the attention you’re getting. We’re not jealous at all!

Smiley Katy’s mate Miley Not just a pretty face

LAST week’s race to No.1 in the UK Top 40 Singles Chart between Bastille and Gary Barlow took the focus away from who was really steaming up the charts.

Fresh back from maternity leave, Lily Allen has come back t’werk with the bit between her teeth, her new single Hard Out Here creating a big buzz. Her choice of lyrics seems to mock the way woman are portrayed in the media, and many believe that the raunchy video accompanying the song was a pop

at the recent antics of Miley Cyrus. But Lily was quick to take to Twitter to play the rumour down, stating: “Anyone who knows me, or follows me on Twitter, knows I love that girl more than anything. “She’s probably way too busy for someone like me but, yeah, I’d welcome the opportunity to work with her.” Lily also proved that actions speak louder than words because last Tuesday, after a flight to Los Angeles, the pair arranged to meet up, just four hours after touchdown. The pair hit it off instantly and tweeted photos of the unlikely pairing on social net-

works. Aside of this new, blossoming, girly friendship, Lily can give herself a pat on the back because, not only has her comeback single

entered the Top 10, she has also bagged the No1 spot ahead of Gary Barlow and Bastille with her cover of Keane’s Somewhere Only We Know, which you will recognise from the John Lewis Christmas TV ad. Nobody expected this, and all eyes were on the race between Let Me Go and Of The Night. Had Lily not been in the mix, Gary would still not be celebrating a No.1 because sales from the Bastille single were obviously too much for camp GB, even after his performance on the X Factor the week before. Has the X Factor lost its power to top the charts? Or is Gary Barlow’s song not as good as the hype?

MONKEYS SET FOR BRITS ARCTIC Monkeys and Katy Perry are the first acts confirmed to play at next year’s BRIT Awards, with James Corden returning to host for the fifth and final time.

The event, to be held at London’s O2 Arena on 19th February, will be the first time the Monkeys have played the BRITs. Organisers said

booking the Sheffield band was “a statement of intent by the BRIT’s

29th November - 5th December 2013

committee to put British music at the heart of the UK’s most

celebrated music awards show”. Katy said: “The BRITs has always showcased the music that I love and am influenced by. It’s an honour to play at such a prestigious event, where musicality shines at its brightest.” When asked how he felt about his final time as host, Corden said: “I really love the BRITs. “I’m such a fan. I’ll miss not doing it after this one, but I fully intend to enjoy every second of BRITs 2014.”

IT wasn’t that long ago that our Chezza was in trouble for punching a toilet attendant. A decade on, at 30, and Cheryl Cole seems to have shaken off her chavvy beginnings and is emerging as a competent businesswoman. Her company, Tara Entertainments Ltd, has just recorded post-tax profits of over £2.1 million between November 2011 and the end of last year. It seems that even though Team Cole has been quiet for a while, Tara’s till is

still kerchinging! Cole’s first tour made up part of the revenue, which was topped up from sales of the singer’s third album, A Million Lights. The Irish-based company not only deals with Cheryl’s work but has also worked with other Syco-signed artistes such as Olly Murs & JLS. It’s a far cry from the early days of Pop Idol - The Rivals back in 2002. Maybe her skills are shifting towards artiste management and promotion.

Garden

www.canarianweekly.com

By Margaret Tully I AM so pleased to be on board the Canarian Weekly, bringing you regular gardening articles.

My interest in gardening was sparked by my Mum, Betty, who started the “Green Hand Gang” while I was in primary school. There was an allotment in the grounds and various parents and their children went along and got their hands dirty. From that point my passion began and, years later, it is still flourishing. When I eventually came to live in Tenerife in 2004 after having a holiday home here for a while, I couldn’t wait to start gardening in the sunshine. But I soon found out that this type of climate comes with a new set of problems and challenges. Almost 10 years on and I am still learning about the flora of the Canaries, and enjoying doing my own gardening with my husband, Eric. For my first article I have chosen to talk about a plant I have in my garden: Lemongrass (Cymbopogon Ciratus). Lemongrass is an evergreen grass plant, which grows to 3-4ft tall. It is a plant of Asian origin and loves a warm climate, which is why it flourishes here. It is also useful as a mosquito repellent. I planted a clump at the back of my little wildlife

The class of Lemongrass!

pond and there are now very few mosquitoes there, where once it was abuzz with them. Lemongrass has a strong shape, being an evergreen plant, and it makes an excellent choice for year-round structure in your garden. It blows lightly in the Canarian winds, making a subtle but hypnotic rustling sound and, in the evening, the scent of lemon is intoxicating. I invested about three euros in just one plant a few years ago, - and from that plant I now have hundreds. Tip: The leaves are long and narrow and can be as sharp as a razor, so do wear gloves when cutting. Taking cuttings Pull a few stalks of lemongrass out of the ground and shake off the excess earth. Trim off leaves and cut stem, leaving rooted end and 2-3 inches of the plant – and this is

your cutting. Push the cutting into a 3in pot of compost - one pot can actually accommodate three cuttings. Water well, let drain and leave in a warm (not hot), sheltered place. When you notice fresh, green shoots appearing, usually within 10-14 days, then you know it’s time to transplant the cuttings, either into a bigger pot or straight into the ground. Tip: When planting out, use three plants per 5in pot, and five plants, well spaced, into larger pots. This grouping creates a tight clump. You can plant out into the garden in the same way or slightly further apart, and they will eventually create one large clump. The stem you cut off can be used in Thai cuisine and for flavouring custards and ice-cream. It is important that you water your cuttings only

if compost is drying out because a waterlogged lemongrass will rot. If grown in the garden, the plants will spread and bush out, but the growth is easily controlled by dividing, replanting or cutting back. If you cut the lemongrass back, leaving the rooted stumps in the ground, they will also get new shoots within 10-14 days. Of course, you can grow lemongrass from seed, but it involves a longer process and can be less successful than taking cuttings. Lemongrass is not fussy about what type of soil it grows in, and a multi-purpose compost is fine. However, it does not like its feet in water, So, if growing in pots, make sure the plants have some gravel or crocks in the bottom to help drainage. When they are planted out in a garden, the

same free-draining soil is required and watering should be done infrequently or, ideally, be supplied by a drip-feed system. Do water at the roots to avoid the leaves getting beads of water on them and getting scorched by the hot sun. Options for planting Treat lemongrass as a herb - and plant with mint and sage, which make excellent companion plants. Lemon verbena is a good choice, too. This makes for a beautifully-scented area and, if sited near the kitchen door, cuttings can be taken regularly for cooking. To create a design feature in your garden, pair lemongrass with the Acacia koa tree, a fast-growing tree which creates a canopy of feather-like leaves, under which lemongrass will thrive. If the cottage garden is more your thing, plant three roses in a wellspaced row. At either

side, plant two zig-zag rows of lemongrass. The roses, when in bloom, will pop up between the lemongrass and, when not in flower, will not be seen. Being a natural aphid repellent, the lemongrass will also create a protective barrier for the roses. Cutting back the roses and the lemongrass, after the rose blooms are dried out, should ensure you get two shows in one year. You can also freeze the harvested lemongrass to use throughout the next season. To freeze *Cut into chunks *Put into freezer bags or plastic boxes *Freeze Kept controlled in pots or planted en-masse into the garden, and, believe me, this plant is a must for the Canarian gardener. Tip: When buying a lemongrass plant from the garden centre, find it in the herb section. This way, you will ensure it is the culinary type.

GROW IT… THEN TASTE IT THIS recipe is so easy to follow, and the result is a lovely, creamy, sorbet-like ice-cream, with a delicate lemon flavour. It is a wonderful choice for a dessert after hot, spicy foods or a heavy steak. Ingredients (serves approx 6)

Home-made Lemongrass ice-cream 2 cups of whole milk 1½ cups chopped lemongrass ¾ cup caster sugar 2½ tbs cornflour 1 cup single cream Method *Combine the whole

29th November - 5th December 2013

milk, the lemongrass and the sugar in a heavy-bottomed saucepan *Bring to a simmer over a medium heat. *In a small bowl, whisk together the cornflour

and the single cream until smooth *Add this mixture to the saucepan and cook, stirring constantly until it thickens slightly (it should be able to coat the back of a wooden

spoon) *Remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature *Strain mixture through a fine sieve to remove the lemongrass.

*Put into a freezerproof plastic box with a lid and chill in freezer for at least 3-4 hours, or up to 24 hours. If storing for 24 hours, remove from freezer at least 10 minutes before serving to allow it to defrost a little, for ease of serving.

G… is for Babies can carry Glamour Alzheimer’s gene By Carl from Robot

IF it’s full-on glamour you want this party season, there’s nothing more stunning than having your hair put up.

There’s always a way of putting up even midlength hair by adding in real hair pieces, which really sets off your party dress. So don’t just go along to the big event with your usual blow-dry but try something different. I always try to complement the look with your outfit, adding in hair jewels to match if needed. This can transform even the simplest of outfits, and you don’t have to think of anything too formal, either. Your put-up can be anything from simple to intricate - the choices are endless.

Page 40

If this is the style you intend to go for, try not to wash your hair on the day of the party. This might sound bad, but day-old hair goes up and looks much neater than when it’s “just washed”. Remember, too, not to wear anything tightfitting on your top half when you have you hair done because trying to get it over your head later could prove tricky. If you’re going to put anything like accessories in your hair, do make sure they match your jewellery. For instance, if you are wearing bling, then use that

idea for your hair as well as clashing jewels is not a good look. Anything from a shortbob length can be put up, and mixing in hair pieces will make it look fuller and longer, albeit for one night. Take along a photo or image to your stylist to show him/her the look you’re after. The internet is excellent for ideas, and can inspire you to have something a little more adventurous. Don’t forget to warn your stylist before you appear for your appointment because hair-ups usually take a little longer to complete.

TODDLERS with a genetic risk from Alzheimer’s have brains that develop differently. Infants who carry a gene associated with increased risk of the condition tend to have differences in brain development compared with others without the gene. The gene variant is called APOE-E4 - a known risk-factor for late-onset Alzheimer’s - and researchers who have produced a new study say it shows some of the earliest differences in people who have it. The variant linked to Alzheimer’s is present in about 25% of people. Not everyone who carries the gene gets the

condition, but 60% of those who develop the disease have at least one copy of the E4 gene. Researchers scanned the brains of 162 healthy babies, aged from two to 25 months, and carried out DNA tests. Sixty had the E4 variant which has been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s. Their brains were then compared to those without the E4 variant, using a specialised MRI technique. Those with the APOEE4 gene had increased brain growth in the frontal lobe and decreased growth in parts of the middle and rear of the brain. The decreased growth was found in areas which tend to be affected in elderly patients who have Alzheimer’s. The researchers stressed that the findings do not mean any of the children in the study are destined to develop Alzheimer’s -

or even that the brain changes detected are the first clinical signs of the disease. Senior author Dr Sean Deoni, who oversees Brown University’s Advanced Baby Imaging Lab, said: “This work is about understanding how this gene influences brain development. “These results do not establish a direct link to the changes seen in Alzheimer’s patients. But with more research, they may tell us something about how the gene contributes to the risk of Alzheimer’s later in life.’ Dr Deoni added: “These infants are developing normally. “And there is no reason to believe that they won’t continue to develop normally.” Ultimately, the researchers hope the findings, published in the JAMA Neurology journal, could lead to new strategies for preventing the disease.

Binge boozers may not make it to their 30s!

Playing the trendy game off the pitch

By Val Sainsbury

BINGE -DRINKING among teenagers has led to a “meteoric” rise in alcohol-related deaths, with some not lasting beyond their twenties.

OVER the years, we have seen through the media the domination of sport stars and, in particular, footballers and their impact on modern lifestyles.

Sir Ian Gilmore, Britain’s leading authority on liver disease, says too many children are getting drunk on a regular basis. and some of them will die in their twenties as a result. The professor, who is calling for urgent Government action, has also accused Prime Minister David Cameron of backing down over minimum pricing per unit, and other controls. “It is tragic to see young people coming into hospital and dying of alcohol-related liver disease,” said Prof Gilmore, who is President of the British Society of Gastroenterology. “Liver specialists are seeing people as young as in their twenties dying through alcohol.” Sir Ian is particularly concerned by the number of people drinking while their brains are still developing: “We could see up to a quarter-of-a-million preventable deaths from liver disease in the next 20 years,” he said. The professor, appearing at a London conference hosted by the charity Alcohol Concern, said a recorded four-fold rise in deaths from liver disease was “meteoric”. Cirrhosis claimed 1,200 lives a year in 1970, but 40 years on, in 2010, the toll was 5,000 and rising. Tellingly, the UK and Ireland are the only Western European countries where deaths from liver diseases are on the increase. “No other disease has shown anything like this,” stressed the professor. The conference also heard that alcohol-re-

lated admissions to UK hospitals were at an all-time high of 1.2million a year. According to a 2011 survey, 30% of girls and 25% of boys reported being drunk in the previous 30 days. Prof Gilmore said he was ‘very encouraged” when David Cameron as Prime Minister made a personal commitment to the value of bringing in a minimum unit price for alcohol. But he added that he had since been disappointed that the promise appears to have been dropped. “I am aware that in politics, there are difficult decisions and trade-offs,’ he said. “My guess is that factors for the change of position would be pressure from the drinks industry - and concerns from MPs that the person who is not well off and drinks responsibly would be disadvantaged. “The Secretary of State, Jeremy Hunt, is not following the evidence on how we can reduce alcohol-related liver diseases in terms

29th November - 5th December 2013

of availability, promotion and pricing of alcohol. “Instead, regulation is getting more lax. We even hear that the Government is considering changes to licensing laws so people can get a gin and tonic when having their hair cut.” Prof Gilmore said minimum prices per unit would not affect the cost of drinks in pubs or restaurants, and would mean just a slight increase for moderate drinkers. He also noted an experimental ban on bulk discounts for alcohol has seen a 4.5% decrease in wine sales over 12 months to October 2012. As well as minimum pricing, Prof Gilmore suggested district hospitals should create Alcohol Care Teams to work with people admitted with drinkrelated conditions and help them reduce their consumption. He believed such teams could save £1.6 million a year by reducing future admissions at a cost of £600,000 a year per hospital.

A celebrity culture is now firmly rooted in the Premier League, whether it be Posh and Becks, or Cheryl and Ashley Cole (no longer together, of course), they made football fashionable. Some say it started with the likes of George Best, renowned for his antics on and off the pitch, and more recently, the most recognisable face of David Beckham. The so-called WAGs were first to show us how to dress, with Victoria Beckham creating her own fashion line. She was followed by Cheryl and Coleen

Rooney, but these days it is not women who dictate the fashions but the men. We now see footballers bringing out their own clothing lines and, in many cases, using their high profiles to model the garments. One example is the lucrative business of underwear being modelled by such icons as Real Madrid’s Ronaldo and the now-retired Beckham. These golden boys make such an impact on the fashion industry, and they are proving to be a good investment. The way fashion is influencing Premier League footballers has been highlighted recently with the announcement that Harvey Nichols, in Manchester, has a secret twitter account in which the company informs its members when sought-after fashions are in stock. At the moment there are just 80 privileged members of this account, which include players at Manchester United and Manchester City.

City’s Joleon Lescott said it gives them the opportunity to have fashions before anyone else - and to be seen to be wearing them first rather than following trends. Popular brands in the department store are Gucci and Givenchy, and in-store stylists say footballers believe that better clothing make them “look like better football players”. Make of this statement what you will, but I wasn’t aware they wore these clothes in training, or on the pitch. The impact of celebrities, of which you can obviously include footballers, has a big influence on the public’s choices when purchasing products, be it clothes or even City goalkeeper Joe Hart’s TV advert for shampoo. The footballers are putting their names to fashions which the average Joe can buy and wear. But if we’re totally honest, we would prefer to have their weekly bank balance to spend!

Granadilla’s Tapas Route As the nights start to draw in, attention turns towards the end of year celebrations and festivities. And in Granadilla this means it’s tapas time!

In short something for everyone and lots to try. Motoring

By Jav T O Y O T A’ S new version of the Yaris is a smart, practical supermini with a spacious interior every bit as good as its rivals.

It has a sportier design than before and is reasonably efficient fuelwise, the Hybrid returning an impressive 80mpg. The Yaris is available with three or five doors, and in four trim levels. Entry-level models are sparsely equipped – not too surprisingly, perhaps – and prices start from around £9,400. But go for a mid-spec TR model and you’ll get 15in alloy wheels, air-conditioning and a 6.1-inch touch-screen sat-nav with a builtin reversing camera display.

www.canarianweekly.com

New Yaris has a sportier look The sportier look emanates from a lower roofline than the previous model, but the nose and grille echo the rest of the current Toyota range, while the rear bumper and tailgate look rather like the larger Toyota Auris. The SR spec adds a roof spoiler and sports suspension, and top-

spec T Spirit models include a panoramic roof, auto-lights and wipers, front fog lights, dual-zone airconditioning, and keyless start. Buyers can choose between two petrol engines, one diesel and a hybrid petrol-electric. The petrol engines are a 1.0-litre unit with

69bhp or a four-cylinder 1.33-litre engine with 99bhp. Performance from the 1.33-litre engine isn’t too bad, but, because you need to work it quite hard to get full use of the power, it can be a chore to drive in some situations. But the 89bhp 1.4-litre D-4D diesel goes from

Skoda hatch a Rapid surprise ACCORDING to Skoda, their 2014 Rapid Spaceback is the company’s first genuine hatchback. This will certainly come as a surprise to those happy drivers who own a Fabia or Octavia. But what Skoda actually mean is that this model is the company’s first direct rival to the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra - the kind of

Page 44

small family car loved by UK buyers. But there’s plenty of competition in this category, so should you go for the Skoda? The stylish body makes a good first impression, but there are some niggles, when you fire up the 1.6 diesel, for example. The engine’s rumble is intrusive, especially in traffic, and when you’re accelerating it sounds a

bit rough. On the plus side, however, the 10.3sec, 0-62mph time is all you’ll need from a car like this. The stiffish ride of the standard Rapid has been addressed, with a bit more cushioning over rough roads, but it still doesn’t much fancy larger potholes. But then, does any car really? The light steering makes the car easy to

manoeuvre, although it could probably do with a bit more weight at high speeds. All this means the Spaceback trails rivals like the Focus and Mazda 3 for driving fun. But what it does have on its side over other Skodas is its handsome looks. This is by far the most attractive model in the company’s range. The sleek rear end improves on the awkward standard Rapid, while the optional panoramic roof and extended tailgate glass are also neat additions. The boot offers more space than any rival, at 415 litres (the Focus has just 316). There are also some clever options and it does represent good value, though, with the Kia Cee’d 1.6 CRDi 2 costing around £300-4,00 more, at £18,295.

0-62mph in 10.8secs and on to a top speed of 109mph. The hybrid gets a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a small electric motor which, together, produces 98bhp, and can launch the car from 0-62mph in 11.8secs. There are seven airbags as standard, as well as stability control, brake assist and traction control. The engine range is all tried and tested - and just as important, if not more so - is that Toyota’s five-year, 100,000 mile warranty is included, so you can expect excellent reliability overall. Thanks to an extra 100mm over the old Yaris, it’s more practical than before, and it was pretty good before. The boot has 286 litres of space, which is 25% more than ever, and you

can fold the standard split-folding rear seats down to create a 768-litre space in the back. Despite the lower roofline, this new Yaris has plenty of rear leg and headroom, accommodating three adults comfortably. Also, there are plenty of cubby holes and storage spots around the interior. The entire engine range has a big focus on economy, and even the entry-level petrol engine manages 58.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 111g/km. The more powerful 1.33-litre engine returns 52.3mpg and 123g/km, while the diesel version gives you 72.4mpg. Overall, it’s a smart looker with a decent price tag - and it should keep Toyota followers more than happy.

Mitsubishi UK are aiming high THE British branch of Mitsubishi are hoping to double sales to 30,000 cars a year in the shortterm, with the express intention of building a “sustainable” business there.

Their stated ambition comes in the wake of four tough sales years, and also on top of the largest percentage year-on-year sales growth of any car manufacturer in Britain this year. Mitsubishi UK’s predicted 16,000 annual sales represent a 40% growth and, in September, sales were 80% up year-on-year. No wonder, then, the company are hoping to double their annual UK sales. Mitsubishi UK chief Lance Bradley said at

the Tokyo Motor Show, that the growth had been driven by new products, together with a favourable exchange rate with Japan. That had allowed him to lower prices, offer better dealer incentives and invest in marketing. “Our sales are up but our profits aren’t,” he said. “But that’s because we want to build a sustainable business. “We’re using this period of growth to invest in dealers, give them a business from which they know they can make money, and to grow sales to a point that we have awareness among the public of our core strengths. “With that, we hope to get to 25,000-30,000 annual sales, at which point the business will be profitable and sustainable for everyone.”

Ralph’s Antiques Show is a lot of fun

THERE are a number of International Lions Clubs in Tenerife and, with all their fundraising activities, a secretary’s lot is not always the easiest of jobs. Take Ralph Solomon, at San Miguel Lions. One minute he’s the guy who writes all the “begging” letters to the club’s splendid sponsors and supporters, who enable members to give under-privileged UK kids the Holiday of a Lifetime over here every year. Then he puts his Social Secretary’s hat on to drum up business for all the fund-raising dinner/entertainment afternoons and nights he and his committee organise. And then, of course, there are the regular monthly auctions and,

of huge importance financially, the annual Special Auction, which was held last Friday. What, no auctioneer? No worries because into the breech steps Mr Ever-ready - Ralph Solomon no less! He’s a cheerful soul who, together with his wife Susan - both former Presidents - works his socks off for the club, and nothing has ever been too much for him or his partner. The Special Auction, held for the first time at The Albatros Bar, in Costa del Silencio, went “fantastically well,” said Ralph, who couldn’t help but add: “With gavel in hand and microphone to mouth, I was not only able to sell many antique lots but also able to tell many antique jokes.

“The hospitality shown by owners Shirley and Stephen was magnificent, and I must add a special thanks to our Club Lions and helpers who were there on the night.” Now, though, the Club is back to its regular monthly auctions, which are held on the first Friday of every month. The next one will be on Friday (6th Dec), followed by the first one of the new year, on 3rd January. As always, they start at 7.30pm, with just a 15-minute viewing period beforehand, so get there early if you fancy bidding for a bargain lot. And, as ever, they are held at Bar Kiosco Amador, directly above San Miguel Lions Charity Shop, in “The Dip”, which is now open SIX days a week, Monday to Saturday, from 10am till 2pm. Ralph, a regular contributor to Canarian Weekly, who had no idea this tribute to him was being published, is pictured just as he describes it: “Gavel in hand, microphone to mouth”, auctioning off another antique. “He’d flog himself if he thought he could raise a good sum for the Lions’ causes,” said one member.

Another craft session for enthusiasts

THE recent Christmas Crafts day, orgnised by Tenerife Family Church, proved to be so successful that it will be repeated on Wednesday (4th December). It will again be run by Irene Bruce and Christine Hoban, from 11am-2pm in the Costa del Silencio church, in

Page 46

the lower square of the Coral Mar complex. They hope to attract even more people to go along and enjoy watching the craftmaking, and even join in. And do bring along any craft work you are involved with at home. The idea is that the group classes will be a

place for learning from each other, and sharing each other’s skills. If some visitors feel they are not up to craft work, it doesn’t matter because they will probably find themselves being sucked in by the group’s enthusiasm. And if they are having a bad day, they will be put on tea-making duties. Tea apart, there will be a break, so please bring a pack-lunch with you. There will be a charge of three euros a head and for further details, ring Chris on 922 738 490, and leave a message if necessary.

Randy warms up for Germany A FEW months ago, a lovely dog who had been hit by a car and left for dead was brought into the refuge. Unfortunately, one of his legs was too damaged to repair, and an amputation was necessary. For three-legged Randy, though, his Christmas has come early because he has found a new home in Germany. And on Sunday, dressed in a warm jacket, he was flown there to start his new life, and refuge staff are delighted. Last Saturday was The Day of the Animals, and a special event was held at the Plaza de Principe in Santa Cruz. All the main animal charities united to support our animals and it was a huge success. There was a high turnout of supporters, which is encouraging for the animals’ future. Our Talent Competition, open to children aged 6-16, will be staged tomorrow (Saturday) the 30th of November at 2pm at the Terrace Bar on Amarilla Golf. The event starts at 2pm. and if your child can sing, dance or perform a special party trick, do come along. There are excellent prizes on offer, including a holiday to mainland Spain. Please call

Tenerife set for derby day!

CD Tenerife 2 Real Jaen 1

THERE is no doubt about it. Tenerife are flying, and just at the right time.

Last Sunday’s hardfought win over Jaen makes them six unbeaten, gives them breathing space above the relegation zone and sets them up nicely for the long-awaited derby with Las Palmas. Again, head coach Alvaro Cervera shuffled the pack. It must be impossible for opposing managers to set their team up against. But boy, is it working! In England, we would call him The Tinkerman. No matter what he goes with, it pays off. Against Jaen, it was Ricardo and Aitor in midfield with Aridane playing the No.10 and a fit-again Bruno back in central defence. When Tenerife went ahead early on

for Gaitan. Kitoko has been filling in at right-back for the last month, but he is a ballwinning, central-midfielder by trade. Gaitan’s introduction gave Jaen more natural width, and it was from here that the game opened up. Jaen started the second half strongly and, with Tenerife not taking their chances, an equaliser was on the

through a Ricardo penalty, it looked as though it would be a comfortable afternoon for them. They were running the midfield and Jaen looked short of ideas. But then the visitors had a stroke of luck after some misfortune for former CDT player Ritchie Kitoko. The likeable Congolese player pulled a thigh just before the break and made way

cards. Cervera sensed this and brought on Rivero and Inigo Ros for the more attacking Ricardo and Cristo Martin. But disaster struck within two minutes. A free-kick on the edge of the area was struck at pace, and Hugo Alvarez (pictured) got the slightest of flicks on the ball to send it into the roof of the net. Suddenly, Tenerife seemed lopsided: three holding midfield players and just one winger. However, the visitors seemed pleased with their bounty. They dropped off to protect a point, which gave Tenerife fresh vigour. Rivero was playing a little further forward with Ros in support. Until a couple of weeks ago, Ros had never scored for Tenerife. In fact, he had hardly ventured into an opposing area. Claude Makalele was a deadlier goal threat! Yet, Ros would again be the hero, flicking in a near-post corner 16 minutes from time to claim the win. There were the traditional, late, scary moments - and Tenerife spoiled the chances to make the game safe. But it was won! Jaen are no mugs,

and they will not have any relegation threats. Yet for a side who had scored three on their last two away trips, they looked toothless. That was down to Tenerife’s defensive grit, a trait that is the bedrock of their current fine form. Canarian Weekly ratings CD TENERIFE: Roberto 7, Javi Moyano 8, Bruno 7, Carlos Ruiz 7, Raul Camara 7, Ricardo Leon 6 (Iñigo Ros 61min 7), Aitor Sanz 7, Suso 7, Aridane 6, Cristo Martin 6 (Rivero 61min 6), Ayoze 6 (Oscar Rico 89min). REAL JAÉN: Rene 6, Kitoko 5 (Gaitan 38min 7), Hugo Alvarez 7, Servando 6, Nando 6, Sscar Quesada 6, Victor Curto 7, Jozabed 6, Machado 5 (Edgar 59min 7), Juanma 6 (Cascon 79min), Jona 6. This weekend, Tenerife make the trip to Girona, which is just outside Barcelona. The match will bring back some wonderful memories of that balmy June afternoon in 2009, when Dani Kome’s goal promoted Tenerife back to La Liga. One of the heroes that season, Juanlu Hens, will be in the opposition camp, and it’s good to see him back in the form of a few seasons ago.

Girona are going through a sticky spell. They narrowly lost out in the promotion playoffs last season and, after a bright start, their form has tailed off. They have won only twice since midSeptember and have struggled in front of goal. In short, they are there for the taking. Whatever happens on Sunday, all eyes are on Wednesday when fierce rivals Las Palmas are in town. The match kicks off at 8pm and tickets have been selling like hot cakes. The ferry company has laid on a special service so fans can get to and from Tenerife, and the atmosphere will be white-hot. With both teams in great form, it could well be a classic. For me, Las Palmas have been the best side in the division so far, but they don’t have the deepest of squads. They like a card, and it will be interesting to see if they can ride out some injuries and suspensions. Las Palmas have a nice blend of youth and experience and, while they look a little suspect at the back, with a dodgy keeper in Barbosa, they do carry a threat in attack. Nigerian Chrisantus is starting to fire after missing a large chunk of the season through injury. And he is making up for lost time. He bagged a hat-trick against Sporting Gijon and has been among the goals over the last few weeks. Traditionally, these contests see the local lads raising their game and, with Tenerife full of Island boys, it will be a blood-and-thunder affair. I have a feeling Suso and Ayoze (now being strongly linked with a move to Man City) will be the difference.

Bar 180 raise the Bar! ON paper, last Friday’s big match-up between Phoenix Bar and Bar 180 A appeared to be a difficult one to call. And especially after the San Blas outfit were held to a mid-week draw by La Caña Pirates. Maybe, spurred on by that result, they turned up at Phoenix and put in a cracking performance that left the hosts trailing in their wake. After Mick disposed of Bubbles 3-0 in the first

game, they quickly shot into an unassailable lead, only Mitch registering for Phoenix. After back-to-back defeats, Palms Sports Bar got it back together and thumped Scruffy Macs 8-0, while another top-five clash saw The Pub take the trebles leg to beat Target Army. Calvo hit a maximum for the hosts in that one. Also on the 180 trail (and how!) was Gaffers’ Dennis. He fired in no

fewer than three to help his side to victory over Ourplace Playboys. The Golf del Sur bragging rights for darts in Division One changed hands again - and they now belong to Bar 180 C. A last-leg win saw them beat local rivals Emerald Lounge 5-3, despite a 112 check out by the green boys’ captain, Daz. Marilyns, in 11th place, turned the table upside down as they beat third-

placed Chipeque Pool Bar, Gaffers B stuck six into Amistad 1 and Barracuda Bytes scored five at Trap Door. Leaders Rood continued doing what they do best with a comfortable 6-2 success over Naughty Nautas. Here’s a tip for all you punters out there: never do an accumulator on Division 2! You might have got two out of last weeks six

results, if lucky. Firstly, struggling Amistad 2 went and thumped The Rebels 7-1, while Picasso’s matched that score line to beat close rivals Bar 180 D. Then, Pas O Nadas held runaway leaders Tenerife Sun to a draw. In fact, they could have beaten them because the Silencio team won the trebles. Next, Phoenix Flights took second- placed Emerald Shamrocks

to the wire for another draw, and again, could have beaten them via the last rubber. Gary hit a maximum for the hosts in that one. Ourplace Playgirls were just pipped at the post as Barracuda Hunters nicked the last leg for a win, and La Caña Lancers’ good run of form, which sees them firmly in third place, continued with a 5-3 success at home against Sundowners.

Arona honours sporting heroes THE Los Cristianos auditorium was packed to the rafters last weekend as Arona held its annual sporting awards ceremony. Lots of local VIPs and senior politicians were present, including Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, Sports Minister Cristo Perez and Arona Mayor Francisco Niño. Judo champion Nazareth Martin was presented with the female award after winning national titles, while the men’s winner was highly controversial. Light-heavyweight boxer Adasat Rodriguez triumphed, despite the stronger claims of CD Tenerife footballer Bruno Gonzalez.

Adasat lost but then won the national title, while Bruno established himself in Tenerife’s promotion-winning side. Honours also went to the Samguk Taekwondo Club, while Arona Athletics Club won a special award for the ongoing gender equality. Elsa Baquerizo and Liliana Fernandez were also honoured for their efforts in beach volleyball in the London Olympics.

Dreamers ‘can’ La Caña dreams SOMETIMES you get a reminder of how close this league can be, and it was demonstrated perfectly this week in Division 1.

Five of the seven games ended in the same scoreline, and most of them went to the last frame. La Caña A have spent most of the season in third place, and dreaming of a bronzemedal position. But this week they slipped up against Dreamers A, losing 7-5. Sergio won his three games but was let down by the others. Ket won his three for Dreamers and all the other lads chipped in with frames to secure an excellent victory. This slip allowed Phoenix Knights to move above them after proving too strong for Toscales A, picking up the points with a 9-3 success. The other Phoenix team, the Potters, are losing ground to their stablemates after a decent start to the season. They couldn’t get into a rhythm against Hammers C, and the game ended in a stalemate. The game ebbed and

flowed all night and the Potters’ Geoff saw off Ken in the last frame to earn a precious point. League leaders Hammers A kept up their unbeaten run with a 7-5 victory over Exiles A in Silencio in another tightly-fought contest. Second-place Gaffers A are not giving up their title challenge. They are hoping to make points up when the two sides meet on Tuesday. But this week they were made to work for their three points against Treehouse A. The game was poised at 6-5 in favour of the Las Americas lads, and the final frame went down to the black. But Gaffers used their experience to see the game out and finish 7-5 winners. Elsewhere in the league, the mid table teams clashed, with The Peacocks beating Inn the Pink A 7-5 to move to within a point of them in the league. Meanwhile, Palms A saw off Terrace A, down on Amarilla Golf, by the same scoreline. The game went down to the final frame with the Palms leading 6-5. Terrace captain Adi took on JT for

It was catch-up week in Division Two, with fixtures on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night. The two teams at the top of the division had mixed fortunes. James Place relinquished top spot as they managed a draw only against Gaffers C on Tuesday night. But Inn the Pink B picked up three points with victory over Kandi 13. Then, on Wednesday

night, the teams went head-to-head, with Inn the Pink B edging it 7-5 to move a point clear at the top with a game in hand. They have had a fine 2013. Third-place Palms Bar B, who have title ambitions, recorded a superb 11-1 win over Cosy Corner A. But Gaffers B, not too far behind them, picked up points against Next Door with a 9-3 win. At the bottom Cosy Corner B are still looking for their first points of the season after losing to Exiles B and Toscales B.

FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

WITH the return to Premier League action last weekend, the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League sprang back into life. It was a weekend in which changes were needed, with players coming back from the international break with knocks or tiredness. In terms of movement, we have a change at the top of the league because Steve Schofield’s Tenerife Hotspurs have taken over

Page 54

top spot from Jeff Hall’s Summerland Saints. But there is not a lot between them, and still chasing them down in third place are Skegness Scorers after scoring a strong 83 points, which was the week’s highest total. A gap of nearly 30 points is then starting to open up down to fourth place, while Andy Palmer is into the top 10 thanks in part to a strong attack.

At the bottom of the league is still Per Kersoe with his Mostly Vikings and, upon closer inspection of his team, that’s exactly what they are. Apart from a couple of players, his squad is comprised mainly of Scandinavian players. It’s a bold move which, unfortunately, is not working! Worst performance of the week goes to Mikey

Lee FC, scoring a pitiful seven points, although Mikey does claim to know nothing about football. But still! In the battle of the Oasis Fm DJs, Adi Benson is sitting pretty in third spot. Maggie Lennard has dropped sharply down to 37th, Chris Elkington is 41st, Roscoe is 44th and Mikey Lee, in 69th place, is bringing up the rear. Looks like the steaks are on Mikey!

By Adi Benson ARSENAL are four points clear at the top of the Premier League but they are not really pulling away, despite their rivals showing questionable form.

This weekend, Spurs and Man United both have something to prove at the Lane. Arsenal are in Wales and Man City also have Principality action. Aston Villa v Sunderland Last weekend was not a good one for Sunderland, a poor red card and a 2-0 loss at Stoke putting them bottom of the table. These are the games they need to win, and Gus Poyet now has a job to keep them in contention until the January window comes around and he can add his own players. Paul Lambert will have been delighted, though, with a point against West Brom, coming from two goals down to get something out of a difficult game. That will give his team confidence, and they will look at this clash as a chance for three more points. Prediction: Home win Cardiff v Arsenal You can bet that the Cardiff players are really looking forward to this game. They gave a fantastic account of themselves against Man Utd and were unlucky not to win. They will be looking to carry this on and show people they can take on the bigger teams. Arsenal, for me, got three lucky points against Southampton last weekend. They didn’t play well and, for large periods, were inferior, but they remain top of the league and confidence is everything. Prediction: Away win Everton v Stoke I didn’t think he was the right man for the job, but Roberto Mar-

tinez has got Everton playing good football and they were unlucky not to win the Merseyside derby. And what a game that was! They are at the right end of the table, only a point off fourth place and will fancy their chances at home. Stoke are playing better football this season under Mark Hughes, but they are still not picking up as many points as they would like. A good victory last time out at Sunderland will have given them confidence. But this will be a difficult game for them, with Everton in such good form. Prediction: Home win Norwich v Crystal Palace This is a big game for both clubs - and a tale of two managers. Chris Hughton has been under increasing pressure at Norwich after a poor start to the season, whereas Tony Pulis is taking over the reins at Palace, who come into this game on the back of a win. Depending, on other results, a win for Palace could see them out of the bottom three and could see Norwich slipping into the relegation places. Will we witness the

“new manager effect” and see Crystal Palace pick up the points, or can Norwich step up to the plate? Prediction: Away win West Ham v Fulham Again, this is another big game for both clubs - a relegation six-pointer if you will, although the season still has a long way to go. Fulham are still languishing in the bottom three after another loss against Swansea, and West Ham are only a place above them on the same points. There has been speculation that Martin Jol’s position is under pressure at Fulham, but that surely must now apply

to Big Sam. He keeps playing a team every week without a recognised striker, so the outcome of this game could result in a managerial casualty. Prediction: draw Newcastle v West Brom Newcastle have been quietly going about their business over the last few weeks and have got themselves into a good position. They are occupying eighth place, just two points off a Champions League spot. Contrast this with West Brom, who started well but have dropped points in recent games. Steve Clarke has got a good set-up and squad

at West Brom, and you feel he maybe needs a lucky game to get the confidence back into the team. This has the makings of a game with plenty of goals. Prediction: Home win Spurs v Man Utd Spurs have had a week they will want to forget, on the end of a six-goal hammering and a lot of media speculation about their manager, with the odds on him being sacked tumbling. So they look to the next game to get things back on track - and Man Utd roll into town! That said, the fear has gone now with regards to United, and they are struggling to get a run going this season. They still find themselves out of the top four and teams are taking them on. They will be disappointed to have shared the points with Cardiff, conceding a late goal, but how many times have they done that? Spurs will be tight and defensive this time out, and United will struggle to break them down, so this could be a dull game. Prediction: draw Hull v Liverpool Hull made a good start to Premier League life,

but they are now finding it a lot tougher, especially last weekend when they conceded a late goal to lose at home against Crystal Palace. After such a loss, players always want to get back on the pitch, and this weekend they are at home to Liverpool. A tough task, but a win would really set them up nicely going into December and give them confidence. Liverpool showed resilience against Everton, coming back from 3-2 down to grab a draw in what was a tough derby game. They need to stay close to Arsenal, though, and if they really do have top four ambitions, these are the games they must win. Prediction: Away win Chelsea v Southampton I don’t know what to make of Chelsea this season because Mourinho’s team changes so much, and he is leaving quality players out. But they are still in the top four and they are grinding the results out and picking up the points. For me, though, they don’t look like title challengers. Southampton have had an excellent season so far and I felt they slightly edged Arsenal last week despite losing. But with more composure around the goal area, it might have been a different result. Chelsea are hard to beat at home but Southampton could be the team to end their home record. Prediction: Away win Man City v Swansea We had a little glimpse of what Man City are capable of last week, with their 6-0 drubbing of Spurs, and you can bet that Swansea are not relishing this fixture. What will come into effect in this game are the midweek European fixtures. Easy for alreadyqualified City at home, but a tough trip to Norway last night (Thursday) for Swansea. City will be the fresher team, and that should speak volumes. Prediction: Home win
