Santiago’s ‘No’ to clear-up, but Cabildo will spend 1m on roads SANTIAGO del Teide Council has rejected a proposal by the Canary Coalition (CC) to clear up landslides following last year’s rockfall.
It affects the area by the roundabout known as La Pescadora (The Fisherwoman), on the road linking one of the exits from Los Gigantes to Puerto Santiago and Playa de la Arena. The CC wants the work completed, and precautionary measures taken, hopefully to avoid a recurrence. But funding, and not safety, seems to be the primary concern. In January, at the request of the CC, Mayor Juan Gorrín (pictured with Cabildo President Carlos Alonso) indicated that the situation “was being
worked on”. Yet there has been little movement and, thanks to that “being worked on” comment, the proposal was rejected. There are also questions over the legality of the agreement, signed by the town and the owners of the affected land. Jonathan Martín Fumero, CC spokesman, said it was “unthinkable” that it had taken over a year to notify nearby home-owners of the issue affecting people and traffic safety, as well as the image for tourists. But Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, on a recent visit to the area, has promised some good news for the area. Next year, the Cabildo will definitely carry out re-surfacing of the TF82 road linking Chío with Tamaimo and Santiago del Teide town. Provision has already been made in the proposed 2014 Budget an-
nounced this week, (See below) with 480,000 euros set aside for the project, And Alonso assured Councillor Fumero that more than one million euros in total will be spent on road improvements to Santiago in the next three years. The Cabildo plans to sink 250,000 euros into completing the second phase of the road connecting Tamaimo to the Island Ring Road and Chío. A further 300,000 euros will be earmarked in 2016 to renovate the connecting roads to Santiago del Teide’s coastal area. Fumero was full of praise for the Cabildo’s undertakings concerning the roadworks, and for the two imminent projects on the coast, at the Hondura (Crab Island) and at the Plaza Bouganvilla in Los Gigantes, where improvements will be carried out.
Cabildo Budget aimed at jobs The Canaries’ jobless total has fallen, but it’s still a worry THE number of people out of work in the Canaries dropped by 931 last month.
JOBS, investment to bolster the economy, and welfare are the priorities for the Cabildo Budget, which will be th ratified Dec 20 .
The total budget stands at 685,051,063 euros - if agreed by the Cabildo, the opposition and the Island’s municipalities. Roads are also set to see some investment; in the South, the Armeñime junction (300,000 euros) and Charco del Pino, Granadilla (258,700

euros). In the North, the road to Teno is expecting the largest investment (1.3m euros). Provision to resurface the road between Los Realejos and Puerto de la Cruz is also included. Some money has been earmarked to improve municipal sporting fa-
cilities, and half-a-million euros will be invested to improve Puerto de la Cruz’s Martiánez beach. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, making his inaugural speech, said the budget was “what the Island needed”, and that it would be “a budget for employment”.
Construction and service industries enjoyed an improvement, according to the Employment Ministry, but the 283,378 jobless tally is still worryingly high. Compared with the same period last year, the jobless figures have fallen by 5,654. Unfortunately, it’s not really good news when you look further into the stats. That’s because nearly half of those not working in the Canaries have exhausted their benefits. Just 149,668 people on the dole are actually entitled to benefit, and
it doesn’t stop there, either. The average payment for those unemployed in the Canaries is a monthly 749.50 euros. That’s almost 80 euros lower than the Spanish average, and the lowest in the entire country. But the number of foreigners claiming benefits dropped by 190 in November, and there are now 3,494 fewer claimants than this time last year - a drop of 14.37%, or double the national average. Couple this with recent emigration statistics (over 21,000 fewer in the Canaries since 2008), and it seems logical to assume that foreign residents are moving away in their search for employment.

The day the r
T ENER I F E suffered its heaviest single day’s rainfall in eight years on Monday, causing flood chaos throughout the Island.
Meteorologists had given fair warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms in the western Canary Islands, but the ferocity still caught many on the hop. Tenerife Cabildo had issued a yellow warning, but this was swiftly upgraded to amber as the storm intensified during the day. El Hierro was affected early on and expe-

rienced widespread flash-flooding. Schools were closed and in an action that was swiftly mirrored elsewhere, the emergency services were severely stretched. La Palma and La Gomera were also hit hard, before the storm seemed to regenerate before stamping its mark on Tenerife. While the North of the Island did feel the effects, the East, South and West coasts bore the brunt. And there were major problems in the Guimar region. Video footage of wild floods became online hits, and the road system ground to a halt. The area is still badly affected with pot-holes,
broken roads and landslides everywhere. Cabildo president Carlos Alonso visited the area yesterday
(Thursday) and promised immediate action to get the roads operational again. The intensity was
breathtaking. AEMET revealed that at one stage in Guimar, rain fell at an astonishing rate of 303 litres per
square metre. That is an incredible figure and, if you look at it in terms of five-litre water bottles, it equates to this: Imagine a square of ground, one metre by one metre. Stack SIXTY five-litre water bottles into that space and you’ll see just how much rain fell. Then imagine that amount of water on every square metre of ground in the same region and you’ll get an idea of the sheer volume of the deluge. There were similar numbers in Valverde in El Hierro, where over 200sqm fell. Other places which experienced severe rainfall were: Candelar-

ia (116 l/m), Sabinosa in El Hierro (101.8 l/m), Adeje (64 l/ m), Los Rodeos Airport (61.3 l/ m), Arico (97 l/m) and San Sebastian de la Gomera (57 l/ m). Punta Prieta, on the east coast, was a mess, and many small villages also suffered. Schools in Fasnia were sent home early for the day while departures from Tenerife’s North Airport, to La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro were all cancelled, in fact, two flights took off and were ordered back! Local Police in Santa Cruz were swamped with road accidents, so much so that they activated the emergency plan, which saw an ex-
tra 28 officers drafted in. In the South, there were numerous accidents and Los Cristianos was a virtual nogo area for motorists. Accidents cause tailbacks and, when coupled with the extra traffic caused by the stillclosed Parque le Reina junction of the TF1, chaos ensued. Talking of that turnoff, the rain caused landslides to the work being done, pushing back the completion date! While the Cabildo and some town halls have been criticised for not giving enough notice, the Island’s water board is being patted on the back. In 2007, as a direct

result of the effects of Tropical Storm Delta and the flooding, improvements were made. This was to ensure that drains were not over-run, and that water could be better displaced. While there was still some flooding in built-up areas - the region around La Pinta in San Eugenio, in particular - the improvements worked in general. This has led to calls for even more investment in the system, especially in the mountainous regions. Happily, despite the chaos, no casualties were reported anywhere. And thank you to our readers for the great photos!

Adeje’s already got that Festive flavour
ADEJE COUNCIL has organised over a month of activities around Christmas, the New Year and the Feast of the Three Kings. And it is already underway.
It embraces musical, cultural, sporting and children’s events in a comprehensive programme covering all age groups. The cover of this year’s programme is a reflection of the borough’s multi-cultural identity, and is part of the theme of promoting peace and harmony among the different creeds and customs which exist, side by side, in Adeje. Seven of the borough’s children from different cultural backgrounds give meaning to that message. In his Christmas message, Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga says: “These children are the symbol of what makes our borough so special today. “It’s a place where everyone is welcome, a meeting place open to the whole world, where different religious beliefs and customs live side by side for the benefit of all. “I hope that the different celebrations we will experience during this Christmas season will be precious moments where we can share our cultures, understand each other a little bit better and help each other a little bit more.” The Mayor also
thanked all the different neighbourhood and resident associations who have worked hard to develop the Christmas programme of events. “We have all worked over the months, and every one of the ideas from local clubs, groups and associations has been included,” he said. “And, of course, the programme is still subject to changes. “But it is important to underline the important contribution of these local organisations, residents associations, clubs, small businesses, etc, and encourage them to continue to suggest new ideas and alternative ways of doing things.” The Christmas markets have begun, starting in Las Torres, and so has the inauguration of the Nativity Scene by El Galeón Residents Association, which is on
display in the School of Music and Dance. Over the next month there are more markets, cribs and nativity scenes, concerts, gospel, sports events, a New Year’s Eve street party and, of course, the arrival of the Three Kings and the colourful parade on the evening of 5th January, along the town’s main street. The markets have been licensed by the Council’s Local Development Department and, as well as offering a great range of seasonal produce to visitors, they will help local businesses. Other Christmas markets are taking place in the Plaza César Manrique (13th Dec), CC El Mirador (15th Dec) and the Plaza Salytien (20th Dec). Children will be able to bring along their Christmas letters (to Santa or the Three Kings) as
Pharmacy costs still rising THE Canary Islands led the rise in pharmaceutical spending in October, showing an increase of almost 12%. It means costs have now increased month on month since July. And, says the Ministry for Health, this latest 11.7% surge is the highest in Spain. Overall, the Spanish Health Service reported expenditure of
Page 6
almost 770 million euros in October, a rise of 5.15% over the same month in 2012. In July last year, a conew payment system, which depended upon the patient’s income, was introduced. Because of this, the overall expenditure is still well below that of last year. The average price of a prescription is now
10.67 euros, which has not changed significantly since last year. But the number of prescriptions being issued on a national level has risen by around 4.8% in the same period. Prescription numbers in the Canary Islands have risen by 8.1% - the third-highest in Spain behind Cataluña and Murcia.

Is another Delta on its way? NEARLY eight years to the day since Tropical Storm Delta struck the Canary Islands, a similar threat could be heading in our direction.
Meteorologists are closely monitoring Invest 90L, which is currently in the Atlantic Ocean. An Invest is a designated area of disturbed weather, which has the potential to become a tropical storm. These are labelled by the NHC or the American National Hurricane Centre in Miami. They have been monitoring this storm for a number of days and yesterday (Thursday), they gave the storm its official name and issued a provisional advisory. The storm has enough “potential” to become a tropical or sub-tropical storm in the next five days. And while it is unlikely
to head towards the Canary Islands, there is a 20% possibility. The NHC uses sophisticated monitoring systems and computer simulations to predict the future history and path of such storms. One such model has given the scenario of the storm gaining strength and taking a sharp turn east - and into our path! At the time of writing, the Invest was north-

west of the Canary Islands. But its progress north has stalled to a near halt. The “tail” of the storm is the rain predicted to hit the Islands over this weekend, but this is now less likely as the storm starts to compact. The deep, low pressure and Arctic conditions, which have battered Britain, have shifted the low front south and collided with the warmer
currents of the north Atlantic. This has stalled Invest 90L’s progress and COULD send it in another direction. The cooler winds in the Atlantic, in theory, could also make the storm stronger. Spain’s national meteorology body, AEMET, is playing down the chances of a storm strike. Spokesperson Fermin Elizaga said: “At the moment,
there is nothing of concern for the Canaries. “The Invest is far enough away, and all our predictions are that this storm will weaken over the weekend. It’s most likely that this Tropical Storm will not happen, and would not approach Canary Islands.” Tropical Storm Delta, while not a hurricane, brought widespread problems to the Canarian archipelago in late
November 2005. It developed over the Azores - right where Invest 90L is currently - and took an unexpected turn east, gaining strength as she crashed into the islands. Damage amounting to over 300 million euros was caused and, by the time the storm had petered out in Morocco, 19 people had lost their lives as a result of the high winds.

It’s your... Canarian Weekly AS regular readers will notice, we are making some small changes to the shape and feel of your favourite weekly newspaper.

I cannot promise to print all of them, and I’m sure you will understand if we need to edit them slightly! To get the ball rolling, this week I received a fine letter from an A. G.Tholl, who makes some interesting points on the state of Los Cristianos: Dear Editor, What’s to become of Los Cristianos? And this is a serious question. As a tourist destination, it does not compare with its clean, tidy, glitzy and upmarket neighbour Las Americas. The two are a world apart, and it is a sad reflection on the Council of Arona that this is the case.
Los Cristianos does have a charming, old world and atmospheric square at the sea-front and harbour. But move any distance and it quickly falls apart. The plantation house is a ruin, propped up with scaffolding and surrounded by wire fencing, It’s an eyesore. It has been like that for years and needs to be demolished or renovated now. Move further to the East and just past the crazy golf, another shell of crumbling graffitistrewn concrete and stone stands as yet another eyesore on the

beach. The relatively new, unoccupied shopfronts close to the Sunday Market ground are covered in graffiti. And by the Peacock villa we have a permanent encampment of caravans, trailers, trucks, tents, mainly registered in the UK and Germany. Walking further to the base of the mountain, along the North side of Avenida de Amsterdam, and the pavement is crumbling into the waste ground, with no proper protective wall for safety. This could easily be rectified by a low wall, running along to El Mirador, which would also prevent further damage to the pavement adjacent to the waste ground. A break in the wall every 50 yards would allow walked dogs access to the ground. Without this, the pavement would, inevitably, become a canine loo. There is a growing number of tents and shacks sprouting up at the base of mountain in this area. I do have great sympathy for those less fortunate than me, but this is not an ideal solution for
the homeless. Moving North to TF655 and, again, there is a wilderness of undeveloped land on both sides of the road. At the very least, the massive piles of rubble and waste dumped into these areas could be removed and a modicum of landscaping carried out. At the southern end of Calle Oregon, there is yet more undeveloped land, strewn with rubble, etc, which could easily be cleaned up and landscaped. I could go on… The point I am making is that Los Cristianos is, to put it crudely, a dump when away from the main tourist area around the Harbour. Nothing has been done for years to address these eyesores, and the many others in and around town. The cost of landscaping, clearing up rubble etc is not, relatively speaking, high. Las Americas does not appear to have this issue. That area is clean, well-maintained and there always seems to be landscaping and similar work going on. Los Cristianos can easily be cleaned up to compete with its neighbours for tourists, and residents alike. As it stands at present, the town is most definitely the very ugly sister. Unless something is done soon, it will need far more than a facelift to attract its share of the now-regrowing tourist and residential market to the Island. In closing, it seems that we are nowhere nearer to getting the sunbed fiasco (at Las Vistas beach) sorted out, either. Perhaps another symptom of everything which is wrong in Los Cristianos at present. Yours, A.G.Tholl Do you agree? What are your thoughts on the Los Cristianos situation, and what makes you happy or unhappy about our Island?
Tenerife Comedy Club ...you’re having a lafff! THE final Tenerife Comedy Club outing of 2013 takes place tomorrow (Saturday) and again, there is an amazing line-up. Christian Steel makes his Tenerife-hosting debut, stepping into Will Mar’s big boots. Christian has gigged here before, nearly two years
ago, and he jumped at the chance to host this gig. He’s a well-seasoned Geordie with quick lines and a sharp wit. Awardwinning and likeable, he has also performed Shakespeare! His show The Jew, The Muslim, The Christian and The Geordie stormed Edinburgh and there is no doubt he is a comedian on the rise. Last time he was here he had an incident with a dolphin. But you will have to go to the show to hear all about that. Christian will introduce three comedians, including another Tenerife veteran in Anthony J Brown, who was last here in April 2011. Brown is Mr Deadpan: “I followed in my father’s footsteps. He was
a stalker.” Eschewing the welltrodden terrain of oneliner witticism, Mr Brown’s penchant is for 4, 5, 6 and 7-liners, drenched in evocative imagery and laced with comedic red herrings. And not the merest hint of profanity. He
brought the house down last time, so expect the same again. Jim Campbell, not to be confused with James Campbell, is also on the
bill. It’s the first Tenerife gig for the 2009 So You Think You’re Funny finalist, and finalist in the 2011 Durex One Night Stand competition, run by London’s Soho Theatre. While the Essex boy is a dead ringer for Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, expect gags on the BNP rather than the receipt for Albino Badger stew. Another Tenerife newbie, David Mills, rounds off the bill. He is best described by this Edinburgh fringe review from this summer:
“Mills’ material is an alpaca blend of social commentary, wry observation, wordplay and crackling audience interaction. “Some people wish they had seen live performances of Dean Martin or the Beatles singing songs. I wish I had heard them cracking jokes. “David Mills is the nearest I’ll ever get. His material is edgy but never crosses the line into bawdy or mean … Mills deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Dave Allen or Reginald D. Hunter.” For last-minute tickets, call 669 622 622.

Ring Road priorities changed
THE Southern part of the Tenerife Ring Road has suffered further delays because of an ongoing battle for regional and State funding.
This has led to the opening of the section between Adeje and Santiago de Teide section being postponed. It was hoped that the section would be operational by the beginning of 2014, but it now appears that June is a more realistic prediction.
Tenerife Cabildo has restructured its plans to prioritise the Southern section, and is seeking approval of the Canary Islands Government. More specifically, funding for the tunnel at Bicho and the bridge of Vicácaro will be redirected to the Adeje-Santiago del Teide section. If approved, and if all goes according to the new plan, the section will cut an average of 30 minutes off journeys between the two areas, via the Barranco de Erques, and will equate to the completion of about two-thirds of the South-
News
ern section. As regards the Northern route between El Tanque and Icod de los Vinos, work is still set to commence next March. This section will reduce congestion in urban areas along the Island’s west coast. José Luis Delgado, Director for Roads and Landscape, also hopes to force the Government’s hand by suggesting that the completion of the work should be recognised as being “of national importance.. If he is successful, the entire project could be finished in four years.
Council’s boost for its disabled people ADEJE Council laid on a programme of activities to mark International Day for People with Disabilities, on Tuesday.
It was organised by Carmen Rosa González Cabrera, Councillor for People with Special Needs. The events, which included an audio-visual presentation of the Borough’s services were held in the Los Olivos Occupational Centre. Carmen Rosa, who
said the Council was dedicated to supplying the resources required by those who face special-seeds challenges, added: “We feel lucky that we have had this opportunity to mark the celebration. “It has allowed us show what is new in the Los Olivos Centre, and to highlight the services provided to improve the quality of the lives of those who use the centre regularly.” As well as being supported fully by all council departments, the councillor’s department was also able to call on the support of private

businesses and associations. “They often help out by supplying material necessary to ensure that the centre operates to its maximum potential in helping users,· said Councillor Carmen Rosa. Among the new services are early-stimulation therapy for very young babies, with orientation courses for new parents with special-needs children. Cognitive stimulation courses for adults have also been introduced to strengthen the capabilities and attitudes of participants.

Law chief has a ‘fair’ warning for tweeters
D O M I N I C GRIEVE QC, The British Government’s Attorney General, is publishing “contempt of court” guidance on Twitter.
He wants to help prevent social media users from dropping themselves in it when commenting on legal cases, and says his advice is designed to make sure fair trials take place. Peaches Geldof, daughter of rock star and international fundraiser Bob Geldof, recently apologised for tweets she wrote relating to a case. She named the two mothers whose babies were abused by rock star Ian Watkins, pleading ignorance when questioned about it. But police are investigating the tweets over concerns that they identified protected parties. A number people were
fined last year for naming a woman, who was raped by footballer Ched Evans. The Attorney General is chief legal advisor of the Crown and its government, and Mr Grieve’s advice will apply to court cases in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The rise of social media means that conversations about criminal cases, once the domain of ordinary people chat-
ting together, are now published online in a flash, to be shared by countless Twitter followers. Mr Grieve said blogs and social media sites allow individuals to reach thousands of people with a single post. This was, he admitted, an “exciting prospect which can pose certain challenges to the criminal justice system”. But he stressed that he was not proposing
“some sort of Big Brother watch” but was keen to educate the masses, perhaps by starting in schools. He added that guidelines currently issued to the media about highprofile cases could be published online and through Twitter to prevent legal risks, and even the collapse of trials. Mr Grieve said tweets by a juror had caused one sexual-offences case to collapse. “It cost £300,000 and required all the witnesses to go through the process all over again,” he said. And he pointed out that misuse of social media could undermine the fairness of trials, which could call into question “the whole future of jury trials, which most people regard as a very important safeguard for our freedoms”. His “simplest rule” for people to follow is: “Don’t comment on live trials online.” Technology expert
Tom Cheesewright said social media offered “instant publishing”. He outlined the fact that though some individuals had more Twitter followers than national newspapers had subscribers, they did not have legal training - like journalists - or an editor to stop them. Mr Cheesewright added: “People may write posts while drunk or in emotional states, and it’s very unlikely we’re going to have rules to stop this happening. “It’s going to be about education, and part of that education will come from high-profile prosecutions.” Lawyer Rupinder Bains, a social media specialist, does not believe many people will read the Attorney General’s advice on Twitter. But she agreed that if more people were prosecuted, the publicity would lead to future prevention. “The law will eventually catch up
on those who breach legal rules,” she added. Clive Coleman, BBC legal correspondent, said: “There is a public misconception that the internet is, somehow, a free-speech zone to which the criminal and civil law does not apply. That is being corrected. “Instant publication on the internet can go viral at an astonishing rate. But so, too, can the message that the criminal and civil law applies to it as much as to a considered newspaper article.” Mr Coleman warned: “Education on the law of contempt is likely to spread very rapidly online. Facebook and Twitter are publications subject to the same laws that in practice used to apply only to the mainstream media. “Anyone commenting about a case or defendant in a way that could prejudice a trial could be prosecuted for contempt and imprisoned.”
Is Tommy the chimp really human? AN animal rights group in the US wants a chimpanzee recognised as a legal person by a New York court!
The Nonhuman Rights Project wants the chimp, Tommy to be granted “legal personhood” entitling him to the “fundamental right of bodily liberty”. The group, in what is believed to be a legal first, plans to file the same lawsuit on behalf of three other chimps across New York. Members want all four to be released from their captivity and put in a sanctuary attached to the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance. Steven Wise, who founded Nonhuman Rights, told the Associated Press news agency: “We are claiming that chimpanzees are auton-
Page 10
omous - that is, being able to self-determine, be self-aware, and be able to choose how to live their own lives.”
He added: “Once we prove that chimpanzees are autonomous, that should be sufficient for them to gain legal per-
sonhood and at least have their fundamental interests protected by human rights.” The group maintains
that Tommy is being held captive in a shed at a used-trailer lot in Gloversville, New York. Patrick Lavery, who
owns the site, said the chimp’s cage was spacious “with tons of toys”. He said he rescued Tommy from his previous home, where he had been badly treated. But Mr Lavery said he had been unsuccessful in placing him in a sanctuary because there was no room. “If the group were to see where this chimp lived for the first 30 years of his life, they would jump up and down for joy about where he is now,” he told the New York Times. The lawsuit invokes the common-law writ of habeas corpus, the right to challenge unlawful detention. The group insists it is dedicated to changing the common-law status of species considered autonomous, and could eventually file lawsuits on behalf of gorillas, orang-utans, whales, dolphins and elephants.

Spain sinking even lower in ‘Official Corruption’ league SPAIN has slumped 10 places to No.40 in a global index of perceived official corruption.
The downgrading follows a spate of scandals in its ruling centre-right party and the royal family, according to the watchdog, Transparency International. In its Corruption Perceptions Index for 2013, the anti-graft organisation said Spain was the second-biggest loser of points alongside Gambia, Mali, Guinea-Bissau and Libya. The only country to tumble further was Syria, rocked by civil war. Spain’s five-year economic slump, which has forced it to adopt tight austerity laws, exposed how cozy relations between politicians and construction magnates fed a disastrous housing bubble.
Page 12
The former treasurer of the governing People’s Party (PP) told a judge that he had channelled cash donations from construction magnates into the pockets of leaders, and he was found to have 48 million euros in Swiss bank accounts. The King’s son-in-law, Inaki Urdangarin, was also charged this year with embezzling 6m euros in public funds. “What the economic crisis has done is allow more public debate about corruption,” said
Anne Koch, TI’s Director for European and Central Asia. “It is being exposed more, and that affects perceptions. In Spain, every sector - politics, the royal family and companies - was implicated in graft at a time when the country was really suffering,” The scandals also highlighted a lack of accountability in political parties, and even in the watchdogs charged with keeping them clean! This prompted lawmakers to react to pub-
lic outrage and draw up Spain’s first Freedom of Information law. Spain had been the only European Union nation without a law guaranteeing citizens a right to information on how public funds are spent. And Koch said the new law was still inadequate. TI ranked 177 countries in 2013, placing New Zealand and Denmark joint first. The duo were also deemed the world’s least corrupt in 2012, alongside Finland. Somalia, North Korea
and Afghanistan tied at last place - the same as last year. The Berlin-based institute measures perceptions of graft rather than actual levels because of the secrecy that surrounds most corrupt dealings. It uses a scale in which 100 stands for the most clean and 0 for the most corrupt. Greece remained the European Union state with the highest-perceived level of corruption, although its fourpoint gain to 40 points helped it rise to 80th place from 94th in 2012. The biggest points improvement was made by Myanmar, which emerged from 49 years of military rule in 2011. The Southeast Asian state gained six points, taking it to 157 from a previous 172. Among the major global economies, the US ranked 19 and China 80, both unchanged from last year. Russia
improved slightly to joint-127th from a previous 133, while Japan slid one spot to 18. Allegations that leaders of Spain’s PP, including Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, took backhanders, and the investigation into a member of the royal family, are particularly damaging to Spain’s reputation. It’s because they involve such central institutions, according to Fernando Jimenez, lecturer in political sciences at Murcia University. “The problem in Spain is the political reaction,” he said. “Very few people resign here.” He contrasted the Spanish Government’s slow response to the “illegal financing” scandal in the PP with Germany. That’s the country where cabinet ministers stepped down after farless serious allegations that they had plagiarised their academic theses decades earlier.

Woman’s caesarean nightmare revealed THE disturbing tale of how a pregnant Italian woman was sedated against her will - and her baby removed by caesarean section - was unravelled this week. It has been claimed that the newborn was immediately taken into care after instructions from Essex County Council social services, who had obtained a High Court order allowing them to take the child from the mother’s womb. The woman, not named for legal reasons, already has two children. She travelled to Britain to attend a Ryanair hostess training course at Stansted Airport, in Essex, when she suffered a panic attack. She was said to suffer from a bipolar condition, but had failed to take her medication. Police, despite telephoning the woman’s mother in Italy and being told of her daughter’s mental health
problems, took her to a psychiatric hospital. She was sectioned under the Mental Health Act and, recorded The Sunday Telegraph, five weeks later she was sedated under protest and her child removed and taken in to care. The woman was then sent home to Italy without her daughter, who is now 15 months old and the centre of an international legal wrangle. In February the woman, now back on her medication, returned to Britain seeking the return of her daughter. But she was told by a judge at Chelmsford Crown Court that her child would, instead, be put up for adoption, said The Sunday newspaper. Liberal Democrat MP John Hemming has taken up her case and plans to raise the matter in Parliament. Mr Hemming, chairman of the Public Family Law Reform Co-ordi-
6th December - 12th December 2013
nating Campaign, said: “She wanted to go back to Italy to have her child naturally. “If somebody is a bit ill and then she is sectioned, then that does not make her better. There was a situation where, obviously, the thing to have done was to get this woman back to Italy and stabilise her. “I cannot see why it would have been that difficult to get her back to her family and her two children.” The High Court in Rome has questioned why British law has been applied to an Italian citizen. The woman, divorced amicably from her husband, is continuing her battle to get her daughter returned, either to her or into the care of her friends or relatives. Brendan Flemming, her lawyer in Britain, told The Sunday Telegraph, which has seen court documents or-
dering the caesarean section: “I have never heard of anything like this in all my 40 years in the job. “I can understand if someone is very ill that she may not be able to consent to a medical procedure. But a forced caesarean is unprecedented.” Questions are being raised about why the woman’s relatives in Italy, who were caring for her other two children while she was detained, were not consulted. The courts have argued that they have jurisdiction over the case because the woman did not protest at the time. Also, the judge ruled that her child should not be returned to her in case she failed to take her medication again. Essex County Council said: “The Council does not comment on the circumstances of on-going individual cases involving vulnerable people and children.”

Yanks for our baby’s name! THE top UK babies’ names of 2013 are Olivia and Oliver. Yet many mums and dads have been swayed by names from top American TV shows.
Breaking Bad, Homeland and Game Of Thrones have all inspired them to name their newborns after characters from their favourite programmes. A survey of this year’s most popular names shows there has been a 70% increase in Skyler, who is drug-dealer Walter White’s wife in
Breaking Bad. There has also been a 40% rise in the name Brody, Homeland’s renegade soldier, and nearly double the increase in Arya, the tomboy in Game Of Thrones. Downton Abbey, the UK’s popular drama, has also helped prompt double the increase in babies Christened Violet, Elsie and Rose.
The BabyCentre website carried out the research, and Managing Editor Sarah Barrett, said: “Inspiration for your baby’s name can come from anywhere. “That is why a show like Breaking Bad, which has been hugely popular, has influenced naming choices this year.” But the study into the
21,000 babies born this year revealed that popularity had faded for royal names, such as William, Charles and Kate. George, which had been rising in popularity since 2010, was at No.9 in the boys’ chart in June, but was elbowed out of the top 10 in August Ms Barrett said: “So
much speculation about the royal baby, and regal names as well, could be responsible for the decline of many names associated with our royal family.” She added: “Parents fear being labelled Kate copycats, but they will take inspiration from well-known characters in popular TV shows or films.”
Teen idol Daley admits: I’m dating a man now! TOM DALEY, Britain’s international diving star, is going out with a man - and he “couldn’t be happier”.
The handsome l9-yearold, who was 10-metre platform world champion in 2009, and a bronze medallist at London’s 2012 Olympic Games, has stunned his legion of female followers with the revelation. He “came out” by posting a video on YouTube in which he spoke for the first time about his new life. “I’ve never really had a serious relationship to talk about,” he said. Come spring this year, my life changed massively when I met someone. “It made me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great. And that someone is a guy. It felt right. My whole world just changed, right there and then.” He added: “Of course I still fancy girls. But I mean, right now I’m dating a guy and I couldn’t be happier ...
Page 14
is it a big deal? I don’t think so.” Daley won the nation’s sympathy when father Rob, a constant companion throughout his great worldwide diving adventures, died in May 2011 after losing his battle with brain cancer. The teenager admitted his family had displayed mixed opinions about him talking about his sexuality. But Daley said: “My Dad always said to me, ‘As long as you’re happy, I’m happy’. Right now, I couldn’t be happier. Mum has been so supportive and all my friends and family I’ve told have been so supportive. “But when I told the rest my family … well, let’s just say they had mixed opinions. “Lots of them didn’t believe it; lots of them wanted me to keep it quiet. Some said, ‘Why don’t you just issue a statement’? What about a magazine cover’? But I didn’t want my words to get twisted.” Daley posted a link to the video to his 2.4 million Twitter followers, adding the message: “Got
something I need to say … not been an easy decision to make. Hope you can support me.” Gary Lineker, BBC TV sports presenter and former England footballer, responded to offensive tweets about Daley’s video revelation. Lineker tweeted: “They may be a small minority, but some of the homophobic bile on here is disgusting and pathetic. Grow up you morons! “Hope the gay footballers who may be contemplating ‘coming out’ are encouraged by the groundswell of good feeling towards @ TomDaley1994.” Apart from his diving exploits and this latest news, Daley made another big splash when he launched a TV programme of the same name in January. He was commissioned by ITV to take part in a reality programme Splash, in which he taught celebrities how to dive from on high. It became an instant ratings success and, by the end of the series, the show was attracting 5.6 million viewers. Nigel Owens, an
international Rugby Union referee who came out in 2007, believes Daley’s announcement will encourage others in a similar situation to be open. Owens said: “I think it definitely helps when people in sport come out, and someone as popular as Tom Daley making an announcement will help enormously to change attitudes in general and particularly, to combat
homophobia, in sport. “The way he did it was tremendous. I watched the YouTube video and the way he spoke about his experiences - he just came across as a genuine, down-to-earth guy. He added: “It’s difficult for him, as someone who is very famous, not just in Britain but across the world. Once you are in the public eye, you do think of how people are
going to react; what are people going to say? “I’m sure he was worried about people’s responses -both from inside and outside of his sport, and also the general public. “It’s hard enough for any 19-year-old to come out about being in a same-sex relationship, let alone somebody so well-known. “But I think he’ll find the response will be hugely positive.”

Canarians’ cholesterol concern
THE Canarian Cardiology Society estimates that 57% of Canary residents have high cholesterol levels.
The group tested 17,000 participants and the results do not make for good reading. Almost three in five adults have a cholesterol level which presents a “serious risk” to the health of the heart. The laboratory team responsible for taking the test samples was led by Society President Dr Antonio Barragan. He concluded that diet, lifestyle and exercise changes are vital to
begin to take control of the situation. The results by gender suggest that women had higher levels than men; 56% of women as opposed to 45% of men had an overall cholesterol level over 200 mg/dl. A further observation was that just 9% of the voluntary study group was made up of under30s. And that’s an age group continually being linked to increasing obesity. Total Cholesterol Level is calculated from the HDL (high density lipoprotein, known as “good” cholesterol) and LDL (low density lipoprotein, or “bad” cholesterol) along with other components.
PM’s bedroom lies DAVID CAMERON has been accused by charities of giving “inaccurate statements and raising false hopes” over the so-called Bedroom Tax.
Cameron suggested during Prime Minister’s Questions in Parliament last week that disabled people needing an extra room were exempt from the tax. No fewer than 18 chief executives of leading disabled charities have written to him, complaining about his comments. The Prime Minister, asked about calls to exempt disabled people from the spareroom subsidy, said: and “Obviously, what we have done is to exempt disabled people who need an extra room.” The charities, which include Carers UK, the RNIB and Sense, insist he has made similar remarks twice this year. The letter states: “None of these situations reflects the reality of the Government’s policy.
“We are now even more concerned that the effects the policy is having on disabled people and their families are not understood in Government. “When senior Government figures state that these families are exempt when they are not, our organisations have to respond to the false hope this generates. “We receive the relieved calls and messages from families who are struggling to pay their rent shortfall. And it falls to us to tell those families that they are, in fact, subject to these cuts and are not exempt.” Although there are some exemptions for disabled children, many disabled people do not qualify. They may be eligible
for money from a discretionary fund, but charities say the fund is not available to all. As a consequence, the policy is having a “devastating” impact on many people who need an extra room for carers or equipment. They list the types of people affected in the letter to the Prime Minister, including “families of disabled children who need overnight careworkers to stay to give them a break” and “people whose extra room is needed for home adaptations or equipment, including dialysis machines, oxygen tanks, hoists and wheelchairs”. Sky News has revealed that a consortium of 50 charities had written to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) calling for disa-
bled people to be exempt from the spareroom subsidy. The DWP responded: “We are determined to support those who might need extra help through these necessary reforms. “That is why we set aside £190m this year to do precisely this, with £25m specifically for disabled people living in specially-adapted properties. The courts have ruled that we are meeting our equality duties to disabled people who are affected by the policy. “The removal of the spare-room subsidy means we still pay the majority of most claimants’ rent. “But the taxpayer can no longer afford to pay the £500m cost of claimants’ extra bedrooms.”

It’s the Downton-EastEnders great showdown at Christmas BATTLE lines have been drawn for television’s great Christmas Day showdown between warring channels. And the worst possible outcome for viewers has been revealed: ITV’s Downton Abbey is pitched directly opposite the BBC’s EastEnders, according to TV schedules. It’s not quite as bad it seems if you’re all geared up because, as Joe Ferguson says in his column: “We can watch what we want, when we want, thanks to Sky+ and TiVo boxes.” Both episodes will be screened at 8.30pm and, prided you have the correct equipment, you can watch them both. No problem! In the other big clash of Titans, BBC’s Doctor Who will go head to head at 7.30p with

ITV’s hour-long Coronation Street. Downton’s third Christmas special sees the action shift to 1923, with US actor Paul Giamatti joining the cast. The two-hour episode focuses on the Crawleys’ wayward family member Rose being presented at Buckingham Palace. It’s the grandest of occasions and has Cora’s mother, Martha (Shirley MacLaine) reappearing in the drama. And Giamatti makes his debut as Martha’s brother Harold, who was in trouble with the law at the end of the last series. The show’s producers are saying little about the fate of Lady Edith and her pregnancy, only that she is “wrestling with a moral dilemma”.
Last year’s Christmas Day special climaxed in the unexpected death of Downton heir Matthew Crawley, leaving behind his wife, Lady Mary, and their newborn son. Its first hour overlapped with EastEnders, and final audience figures gave BBC the edge, scoring 11.2 million viewers over Downton’s 10.2m. This time, the second hour of Downton Abbey’s Xmas special will be up against BBC One’s hilarious, foulmouthed sitcom Mrs Brown’s Boys. The 25th December episode of Doctor Who will see Matt Smith battle deadly enemies, including the Daleks and the Cybermen, before regenerating into Peter Capaldi. In BBC One’s sched-
ule, the sci-fi drama finds itself sandwiched between Call the Midwife and EastEnders. Meanwhile, back in Walford, the Carter family take over the Queen Vic over the EastEnders’ seasonal period. Albert Square sees the arrival of a new landlord in the Queen Vic, Mick Carter, played by Danny Dyer. The ongoing murder storyline involving Janine Butcher is also expected to figure highly in the soap’s hour-long special. On the Coronation Street cobbles, Leanne and Nick Tilsley’s relationship will take a turn for a worse. Yet the tragic storyline involving long-serving character Hayley Cropper is not expected to end until early next year.

Repossessions: A chink of light
By Mariano Zunino Siri A TECHNICAL issue over home repossessions, which concerns people who may suffer dreadfully, is at the heart of this week’s column. Until recently it was almost impossible to stop any mortgage repossession proceedings by a lender. And the debtor, from the very beginning, was almost certain to lose his property and be evicted. However, the Court of Justice of European Union ruled in March that Spanish Courts have jurisdiction to declare unfair the mortgage loan agreement related to an immovable property (judgement of 14th March 2013). The European Union Court said that Spanish legislation lists the “very limited” grounds on which a debtor may object to mortgage enforcement proceedings.
Those grounds do not include the existence of an unfair term in the mortgage loan agreement. Thus, that fact can be relied upon only in a separate declaratory proceeding, which, unfortunately, does not have the effect of stopping the mortgage enforcement proceedings Additionally, in the Spanish enforcement proceedings, the final seizure of a property by a third party (like a bank) is, in principle, irreversible. I bring your attention to one test case: Mr Aziz, a Moroccan national residing in Spain, signed a mortgage loan agreement with Catalunya Caixa bank in 2007. He quit paying the instalments in 2008 and the bank started the foreclosing procedure. The property was adjudicated by the bank at 50% of the purchased value and, in 2011, he was evicted.
6th December - 12th December 2013
He then applied for a declaration of nullification of some terms of the loan (mortgage) agreement, saying that it was unfair. The Barcelona Court which heard the case asked the Court of Justice to decide about the compatibility under Spanish Law with the Unfair Terms of Consumers Contracts (“cláusulas abusivas en contratos celebrados con consumidores”). The Court responded, saying: “Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Directive” precluded national legislation, such as the Spanish legislation at issue, which does not allow the court hearing the declaratory proceedings (the proceeding seeking a declaration that a term is unfair) to adopt interim measures, in particular, the halting of the enforcement proceedings, where they are necessary to guarantee the full effectiveness of its final decision.”
The EU Court, concerning the principle of effectiveness, considers that the Spanish procedural system impairs the effectiveness of the protection which the European Directive seeks to achieve. In short, the Spanish law grants too many powers to the lenders (the banks, for example). The EU maintains that in all cases where enforcement is carried out in respect of the property, the contractual term on which the mortgage is based is unfair and, accordingly, annuls the enforcement proceedings. So while they maintain the amount a client owes and is behind on payments, the amount of interest charged on the overdue fees is exorbitant and spirals the debt (or mortgage amount) unfairly. The European Court, hence, stated that Spanish Law does not comply with the principle of ef-
fectiveness and makes impossible, or very difficult, in a foreclosing proceeding, to apply the protection of consumers mentioned in the European Directive. The essence is that banks set unfair late payment charges in an attempt to seize back properties, which is great business for the banks, but uncompetitive for clients. Following this statement, The national Court now needs to consider whether the default interest clause included in the contract signed by Mr Aziz was unfair or not. The clause of default interest was, in this case, 18.75% and the Court must compare such a high interest rate with the legal interest to see if this is an appropriate rate to be applied (in 2007 the legal interest was 5%). In addition, the clause by which the bank can claim the total loan out-
standing after the first lack of payment should be also studied by national Court to see if this clause matches up with the consumer’s right. In relation to the unilateral quantification of the overdue sums, the bank, in those cases, can liquidate such amount before starting the mortgage proceeding. The national Court should also, in this case, assess whether this clause is appropriate or not. According to the European Directive, a contractual term not negotiated individually, could be considered unfair if it causes a significant imbalance in the parties. This judgement impacted hugely in many mortgage executions. In fact, many of those proceeding have been stopped immediately. And many Courts have ruled that the foreclosing proceedings were null and void. Back in May, the Law 1/2013 changed relevant articles of the Mortgage Law. So it appears that, following the March 2013 judgement, the rights of the consumers seem to have more protection.

It’s the Daley Gossip! By Joe Ferguson
FIRST off, it’s not that important to me. But we still live in a world of homophobia, racism and hatred towards others who, according to the above, “live a different lifestyle”.
The only people who actually do live differently from us would be millionaires. So no matter which race, creed or people’s sexuality, should it matter? It’s a resounding No from me! So why this piece on someone who has announced he is gay? Let me explain. Earlier this week, Olympic medallist Tom Daley announced to the world that he was “in a loving relationship with a man”. Rightly so, he was greeted with congratulations by so many. It’s a very hard thing to do, especially when you’re in the public eye. THE worldwide popularity of HBO TV series Game of Thrones is to be used to attract more tourists to Northern Ireland over the next three years. Much of the show is filmed on location there, and it will be used to promote the region, alongside the Giant’s Causeway and Titan-
But it’s done and Tom along with his legion of male and female fans just wants everything to go back to normal, and for us all to get on with our lives. Which we will. But not just yet. Mr Daley, his agent, family and friends are asking for privacy at this minute. Which, to me, is ridiculous. I respect everyone’s privacy, but when you are in the celebrity world and you make a vast amount of money selling your soul and in-

Page 20
tegrity, doing every twobit piece of TV to feed your ego, you have to take on board that the very same people who made you famous are interested in your private life. I’ve scrolled through the social media, and the majority of messages are asking for people, especially those of us in the media, to shut up about it as it’s no big deal! And they would be correct … if only Mr Daley had not made such a big deal of it himself, by
seeking to capitalise on the huge popularity of Game of Thrones,” she said. I’m happy to see her money could be coming into the country finally. After all, we taxpayers have to foot the bill for the Police to control the flag protesters, who keep
announcing it on YouTube. Let me be perfectly honest by admitting I was not shocked in the slightest by his announcement. But I was shocked at how he handled the whole thing. He featured in a Daly Mirror article in the UK dated 8th September 2013 - just three months ago - in which he replied to the then rumours that he was gay “I’m not. But even if I was, I wouldn’t be ashamed,” he said. “It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest what people thought.” At the very same time, he was starting his “loving relationship”. So he lied to his fans - a fact which seems to have been forgotten. And this whole, “the media should just leave it, it was only YouTube” thing? Only YouTube? The biggest online video service in the world? Tom Daley knew exactly what he was doing. As a matter of fact, his team knew exactly what to do on his behalf. No point going to a newspaper, Sky News or a magazine. Why? It’s not about the money. It’s about getting the biggest impact ASAP. us out of Belfast City Centre every Saturday. And the closed-down roads, with petrol bombed cars every summer. And, of course, cough up for the Council’s bar tab when MTV have an awards’ ceremony in town. We are so thankful for Game Of Thrones.
VILLIANS of the week have to be both BBC and ITV. They have just officially released their Christmas Day schedules and you’d be forgiven that World War III has broken out. Downton Abbey and EastEnders are clashing with each other. Oh, what a travesty this is! I don’t watch either, so I could care less. But already, petitions are being sent to the local offices of both broadcasters, and Facebook has gone ballistic. I’m pretty sure millions will soon take to the streets showing their anger. As far as these sad individuals are concerned, Christmas has been ruined.
And they’d no better way than doing it online. Media companies employ people to stare at a screen every minute of the day to find out what people are interested in, listen to and are watching. Team Daley knew what they were doing, and it worked. You so much as fart on YouTube and the world will know within minutes. So don’t blame the media when is being courted by his PR people. And don’t forget, he’d been involved in what has to be the most stupid TV show ever, Splash, and it returns on January for a second series. Coincidence?
You be the judge. But I say good luck to him in the future, and it really is none of our business. As I work in media, it’s my job to point out hypocrisy and … well let’s say in this case, a holding back of the truth, to the very people who have put him where he is today. And to those who like to point out that he’s a sports person and didn’t ask to be a celebrity, you just keep believing that. Especially after he gives magazine and TV interviews to publicise his new television projects, when the interviewer AND you want only to know how he and boyfriend are getting on!

Why you women are such a giant turn-off
LADIES, please listen up. This is a special Christmas message to females across the world. I could be labelled as sexist writing this, but I’ll argue the point until I’m blue, that it’s only the ladies who do this - and the males will be with me 100%. By now, everyone will have the decorations up. And it all looks beautiful as the dark evenings draw in. As you walk down any street in the world, you’ll have a smile on your face as you gaze in wonder, with a beaming smile, at the twinkling lights. It gives you that sense of magic as the big day comes close, but here’s what drives me crazy. The family decide to go out, may it be shopping, visiting friends or whatever. And just as you are about to get out of the door, up go those immortal words that have come from a woman’s mouth for hundreds of years since the first Christmas tree: “Make sure you turn the lights out.” It seems that it’s possibly the only task of utmost importance in the mind. You’ll never hear
a bloke say it. We want to share the Christmas spirit with you, and the last thing we think of is turning those calm lights off! Trust me ladies, they are not some kind of intelligent being - the lights I’m talking about now and not the blokes! They don’t have eyes to see and ears to hear when you are going out for a while. We can all safely sit in the house and watch Celebrity Jungle, as the lights do their thing, with no worries. But the moment we leave, in the ladies’ minds, they are nothing but little devils. Soon as the door is closed, they take on a life of their own by climbing off the tree and raiding the fridge. As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if, in my girlfriend’s mind, that’s where the mystery of the one sock going missing from the washing machine originates. It’s the lights. I speak for every man when I say: “STOP IT NOW.” And if any of you, male or female, deny any of the above, Santa will know you’re telling porkies!

It is being produced by ITV Studios. The event is staged in aid of the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund, whose patron is Her Majesty The Queen. The money raised from the show helps those people from the world of entertainment in need of care and assistance. The 2013 Royal Variety Performance is commissioned by ITV’s Controller of Entertainment John Kaye Cooper and executive produced by ITV Studios’ Fiona Clark and Glenn Coomber. Attraction: Attraction are a nine strong Hungarian group who won Britain’s Got Talent with their mesmerising Shadow Act. Bryn Terfel: Bryn Terfel has built his towering international reputation by singing key roles by Mozart, Verdi and Puccini, and in recent years has distinguished himself as one of the great Wagnerian singers of the age. Caro Emerald: The stylish multi-award winning Caro Emerald makes her debut Royal Variety Performance today. Chas & Dave: 2013 marks 50 years since Charles Hodges and David Peacock first met. Better known as Chas & Dave they’ve carved out a place in the hearts of the nation with their musicianship, honesty, and pure and simple entertainment value. Dame Edna Everage: Dame Edna Everage is a globally acclaimed “gigastar”, unmistakeable for her greeting “Hello possums!” She began a stage career in the 1950s in Australia before moving to London, and playing herself in the 1971 film Barry McKenzie Holds His Own and its sequel, making her debut in London’s West End in the stage show Housewife, SuperstarLondon West End debut in 1976, and becoming a Dame the same decade. Gareth Malone & Voices: Through his nationwide search Gareth Malone has assembled the country’s finest young talent, the 17 members of Gareth Malone’s Voices are between 18-27 years of age. Gareth Malone the “UK’s most recognisable choirmaster” describes the new album Voices as a “watershed moment” for choral singing, which treads uncharted territory by mixing lush, choral textures with innovative and contemporary recording techniques on tracks like “A Little Respect” “Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart” and “Nights In White Satin.” Seann Walsh: 2013 Edinburgh Fosters Comedy ‘Best Show’ Award nominee and star of Channel 4’s ‘Stand Up For The Week’, ‘Seann Walsh World’ and ‘Big Bad World’ for Comedy Central, BBC1’s ‘Live At The Apollo’ and ‘Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow’ Seann Walsh is the most frighteningly precocious talent to emerge from the UK comedy circuit in years. Cleverly mixing off-the-wall reflections on young modern life with his trademark unique physical stage presence, Seann is one of the most exhilaratingly fresh talents around.

Secrets of the Terracotta Warriors Secret History Channel 4, 20:00
The discovery of China’s Terracotta Army in 1974 captured the imagination of the world. But that first dig only revealed a fraction of this enormous and extraordinary treasure. Since then, scientists have resumed work on the site, and their research has turned up a series of new discoveries about the warriors and the people who made them over two millennia ago. With exclusive access to pioneering research conducted by UCL and the Terracotta Army Museum, this documentary reveals those new secrets. The Terracotta Army lay unknown and undiscovered for over 2200 years. The figures were part of the greatest necropolis ever built: the grave of the legendary First Emperor, who conquered all his rivals, unified China and left it with one language, currency and set of laws.

The first of two compilation episodes from the series showing how the British public help the police fight back against the criminals. Presenters Julia Bradbury and Adrian Simpson show how people throughout Britain are making life tough for the bad guys by capturing evidence for the police using the latest cameras, computer software, amateur detective work and sometimes even putting their own lives in danger. A gang of weapon-wielding motorbike thieves get more than they bargained for when a group of shop owners band together to stop the theft of £50,000 worth of motorcycles. Adrian plays a trick on Julia to test how good a witness she might be. As she reads a presenter link, an apparent robber - in fact an actor - snatches a bag off a woman right in front of Julia’s nose. So what will Julia remember when the police come calling? We reveal the tricks the mind can play when trying to remember a face. Two pensioners with a combined age of 141 take on the same gang of jewellery thieves

Great British Garden Revival BBC2, 19:00
Wild Flowers and Front Gardens. A selection of top television gardeners attempt to inspire the nation to save Britain’s rich gardening heritage. Monty Don is on the campaign trail for wild flowers. 98% of wild flower meadows have been lost since the first part of the twentieth century, a shocking statistic which he believes all gardeners can do something about. On his revival he tries his hand at making hay the old fashioned way in a coronation meadow, visits the largest biodiversity hotspot in the world - Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank and shows how to grow wild flowers, even without a garden. Meanwhile, Joe Swift is determined to return the nation’s front gardens to their former glory. He bases his campaign at the award-winning Rockcliffe Avenue in Whitley Bay and shares his tips on how to transform front gardens in a few simple steps. He also discovers that greener streets reduce pollution and hits the road to get the message across in his Great British Plant Giveaway.

Historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Peter Ginn and Tom Pinfold explore hospitality in Tudor England. With no other provision for the poor, monasteries played a key role in providing welfare for those in need. But funding charity also meant extending hospitality to wealthy donors. The monastery restores a corrody room which would have been granted to an elderly worker as a form of pension. The room needs a new floor so limestone is gathered and roasted to make lime putty. Ruth is in charge of the home comforts and harvests rushes from the river to make a mattress.

Sports Personality Of The Year At 60 BBC1, 21.00 Gary Lineker looks back on the 60-year history of BBC Sports Personality of the Year. What started in 1954 as a low-key affair with a surprise winner when Chris Chataway beat four-minute-mile record-setter Roger Bannister, has grown into one of the most anticipated nights in the sport and television calendars, with the 2012 event the biggest ever. HRH Princess Anne, David Beckham, Lord Sebastian Coe, Sir Bradley Wiggins, Paula Radcliffe, Zara Phillips and Sir Steve Regrave are just some of the winners who recall fond memories of the night they won the main award. Former presenter Des Lynam recounts his nerves on the night, as well as the laughs he shared with Frank Bruno and others, while Lineker and Sue Barker remind us of the moments that brought them, and us, to tears – emotional presentations to legends of sport like Muhammad Ali and Sir Bobby Robson. There are also contributions from Young Sports Personality of the Year winners Wayne Rooney and Andy Murray. In the 60 years Sports Personality has been on the air, sport and society has evolved, but the award remains as relevant and important now as it ever has done. Lineker explains, this is because of the public – the people who are so frequently captivated by sport, and who vote in their thousands every year to select the award winner.

The Silent War Throughout the 1970s and 80s, the front line of the Cold War was hidden beneath the ocean. Submariners from three navies - American, Soviet and British played a deadly game of cat and mouse in a secret war of espionage and intimidation. The nuclear balance between East and West was constantly shifting. This was a constant struggle to gain technological advantage, and the Soviets developed submarines that were ever more sophisticated - bigger, faster and more luxurious - than any developed by the West. For over 40 years the details of this tense stand-off have been a closely guarded secret.

Ten years after their music dominated the airways, and after a phenomenal comeback year, the bands from ITV2’s hit series “The Big Reunion” are back in the recording studio – producing a Christmas single in aid of Text Santa. The Big Christmas Reunion gives viewers an access-all-areas pass to witness what happens behind the scenes when – for the first time ever Blue, Atomic Kitten, Five, The Honeyz, B*Witched, 911 and Liberty X join forces to record music together. They will be recording one of the best-loved tracks in Christmas history – ‘I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day (Wizzard).’ With just two days to record a Christmas hit, the cameras will capture all the drama, excitement, rivalry and pressure as 26 pop stars come together to work with legendary music producer Cutfather – who has over seven UK No.1’s and 37 top 10 singles to his name. It may be a one of the most recognizable Christmas singles but Five are convinced a rap by their very own Abz Love should be included - but will the other bands agree?

The real karaoke kings! THE run-up to Christmas is probably the quietest time in Tenerife for visitors, with only a few bars continuing to flourish during this period.
Many cabaret acts like to take a holiday, and some bars even close for 2-3 weeks, opening again just before
the first flights arrive for Christmas and New Year. Sometimes during this period, karaoke is the only form of entertainment that carries the bars through. It is a phenomenon that is still as popular today as it always has been. Let’s be honest though, it’s not for everyone. But then again, karaoke can be so diverse in that one minute you will be listening to someone who is slaugh-
tering a song excruciatingly, and the next you will hear someone you’d think should be a professional Yet the one who cannot sing usually gets the biggest applause … go figure! The karaoke compere has the task of making sure that everyone who wants to sing gets a fair chance, and he/she also has to create a balance between the songs so as not to have too many
slow songs in a row. It’s an easy job when everything goes right, but when there are a lot of singers who all want to be next, it can prove difficult. The poor old compere can quickly become unpopular with certain quarters of the audience, and all because of one song on karaoke. Christmas and New Year are the most difficult times for comperes running karaoke. They
have so many singers to try to process that it ends up like a conveyor belt of warblers. By the end of the night, you may see the odd compere rocking himself gently after a stressful night. It’s supposed to be a happy pastime for the participant, but it can be far from it for a karaoke host. Having said all that, every compere in this position wouldn’t
change it for the world because the enjoyment factor far out-weighs the woes of the job. An old lady once said to me: “If you find a job you enjoy, you will never work another day in your life.” I hope that all those who deliver entertainment and create memories for Tenerife’s visitors have a wonderful festive period - and that everything goes smoothly for them.
Farewell to this truly BLAYDON RACES fine Feathered friend PAUL FEATHERSTONE, known on the island as Paul Stone, has been treading the boards as Billy Idol for almost two decades.
However, all these years later, and quite a few pairs of leather trousers down the line, Paul and his family are returning to the UK. This man has a huge group of friends here on the Island, and thousands more who have come to know him through his work on Tenerife’s premier stages. When people tell him, “The place just won’t be the same without you”, they mean it sincerely and it really won’t be. This year, Paul won the
Entertainers Entertainer Award at the TEAs, an accolade voted for by fellow entertainers. And what a heart-warming tribute for him to bow out on. There have been messages from thousands of well-wishers on social networks, along with so many group photographs. He is one hell of a pop-
ular guy, and his goodbye status on Facebook received over 400 responses wishing him well. Therefore, I’m sure I speak for everyone who has met Paul and his lovely family when I say “Farewell to the Featherstones and good luck in the UK”. You will be missed both on stage and off.
THE area known as The Patch has always been a vibrant place, with lots going on and plenty of live entertainment. Now there’s more. The Blaydon Races has reopened its doors, staging a showcase for the Island’s artistes last weekend. It was good to see so many acts turn out to support this bar, which is steeped in history and was once the busiest in the area. Chris and Adam plan to put the place back on the map and bring The Blaydon back to life. There was a variety of artistes there on Sunday and only seven available slots to fill unless the boys decide to run a fortnightly programme and, perhaps, alternate artistes each week. There are plenty of shows available and,
if all those who came along get spots, then The Blaydon will be a force to be reckoned with when it comes to
billed shows. We wish you all the luck in the world, boys. Have a wonderful Christmas and a happy New Year.
SINCE opening its doors, Mega Rock Cafe has grown in popularity, and everyone I have spoken to who has visited the bar says the same thing.
“Lovely atmosphere and very relaxed, with top-quality acts, including karaoke with DJ Terry Ellens, and a fine selection of artistes from all genres of entertainment.” The Mega Rock still boasts the best milkshakes you will find on the Island and an extensive menu from the American-style diner. Christmas bookings for company parties are flooding in, but there is still space in the diary for more. It’s the ideal party venue, so take a look at the offers on the flyer (right) and call the number to book your package. Mega Rock Cafe is situated within the walls of Mega Bowl in Fanabe and the two businesses work together. And there are some excellent bowling deals as well.

Calvin Harris is Under Control OVER the last few years, DJs and producers have side-stepped towards commercial releases more than ever before.
Calvin Harris is an unstoppable hit machine. He seems to churn out huge hits, which hang around the charts for a week or two, and then slip away as quickly as they came. His new track, Under Control, is a formidable challenger to the norm from him. This collaboration comprises Swedish DJ Alesso, and Manchester pop duo Hurts providing vocals. With all the signature sounds associated with Harris, and a colourful video shot in Los Angeles, it’s hardly surprising that this track went straight in at No.1 in the UK’s official Top 40 Singles Chart. Simple, hooky, vocal breaks and big, brassy, house jabs carve out the Harris sound, and the Scotsman has again produced a huge hit. Has it got the legs to stay another week at the top, or will this be another of his “in & out” tracks? Breach has Everything You Never Had MOVING along, but not far from the subject of DJ/producers in the mainstream, Breach is back on the scene with
a new track. Following the summer success of Jack, 32-year-old Breach, real name Ben Westbeach, from Bristol, has gifted our ears with Everything You Never Had (We Had It All). The DJ, classically trained as a cellist and vocalist, enlisted the voice of Andreya Triana, a London-based soul singer who works with Breach and many other artistes within this genre.
It’s the sound of the late Eighties, when Jackin’ was the dance of choice, (a bit like Twerkin’ has become over the last year.) Breach’s influence has come from soul, jazz and hip hop, and he manages to tick all the boxes in this new track. The whomp of the mid-range bass through the track blends beautifully with the lower tones, which progress throughout and is guaranteed to make you move. If you like what you have heard from Breach this year, you should definitely listen to his previous albums, Welcome To The Best Years Of Your Life from 2007 and more recently, There’s More To Life Than This, released in 2011.
It’s Rebecca Ferguson, I Hope IT seems an eternity since we saw Rebecca Ferguson on the X Factor in 2010, coming runner-up to Matt Cardle. Her debut album, Heaven, did reasonably well and got to No.3 in the UK album charts, but in the States it could only make the No.23 spot. Rebecca admits that during the time the first album was being released, she was not in a good place and wasn’t
Queen have The Studio Experience THREE years ago, Queen signed a deal with UMG after leaving their long-term contract with Parlophone/EMI.
Their Universal partnership was renewed last week with a longterm contract, covering a range of new projects including rare, unreleased material and a film. The new agreement was announced at the
launch of Queen: The Studio Experience, a new exhibition in Montreux, Switzerland, and Brian May and Roger Taylor were there for the last Monday’s opening. The band recorded six of their 15 studio albums in the Swiss town’s Mountain Studios between 1979 and 1995, including Jazz and Made In Heaven. And Freddie Mercury is still very much a part of Queen. Immediately after he died, the band and their manager, Jim

Breach, set up the Mercury Phoenix Trust. It is an AIDS charity in memory of the most legendary frontmen of all, and this exhibition aims to raise awareness and funds for the charity. Universal are happy their working relationship is continuing, and they are proud to be supporting the Trust and helping to fight AIDS worldwide. Queen: The Studio Experience features all kinds of memorabilia, including hand-written lyrics from the band’s
personal archives, instruments, costumes - and even a small cinema. The main feature is the original studio control room, where visitors can make their own mixes of selected Queen tracks, including Mother Love, Freddie’s last recorded vocal. Fans of Queen worldwide are all very excited about the thought of unheard material being made public, and a film. But who would play the roles of the young Queen members?
handling fame too well. Two years on and Rebecca has emerged more confident. Her second album, Freedom, was released on
Monday, just one day after the release of her lead single from the album, I Hope. She seems more of an established artiste now, and Freedom contains songs which Rebecca describes as being “inspired by her babies”. Other tracks have been written, with her own life experiences ingrained within the lyrics, and she seems to be trying to show a more personal side: who she was and who she has become. With her debut album charting high in the UK, expectations of Freedom doing better are also high. An artiste’s second album is always a good sign as to whether his/her career will bomb or flourish. She should do well with this one though, I hope.

By Sue McDonald AS we move into cooler weather, even here in Tenerife, it’s understandable that people like to make their homes cosier, with richer, vibrant colours.
From an interior decorating point of view, colour is vital. But because fashions change, it is always best to use a fairly neutral colour throughout, and introduce your chosen tone in small pops of colour. This looks more sophisticated, and means a change is easier and, therefore, cheaper if you change your mind. By this, I mean having perhaps the sofa etc, in the neutral tone, and using cushions and pictures to introduce a stronger colour. If you love purple or blue, and know that you’ll never change, by all means go for your strong colour in the furniture and curtains, with the understanding that you will have to live with it for a long time. But if you are not so sure, or you are following a fashion trend, make sure you think carefully. If you tire of the limegreen sofa or the brightorange rug, it can cost a lot of money to make a change. A client of mine was telling me the other day that there is a browny-

grey colour which is very much in fashion at the moment, and I must say she is right! It’s everywhere I look, not just in soft furnishings but also clothes and even cars. Now this is a trend I do like, simply because it falls within the ranges of neutrals without being boring. This particular colour is a charcoal grey, mixed with a mid brown, so it can be mixed with all sorts of colours. You can combine it with creams and dark browns and it will give you a peaceful, harmonious look; or you can dress it up with golds and bronzes, or even spice it up with acid greens and yellows.
Anyway, the point is that you can work with it and make it look different, relatively cheaply (although obviously I don’t mind if you want to reupholster that lime-green sofa after six months, and would be pleased to help you). Yes, greys and browns are my favourite background colours. Gilly is telling me about a book called 50 Shades of Grey. It sounds like an interior decorating book, so I will have a read. We are now working from home, so feel free to give us a ring, and we will come and see you for all your furnishing, re-upholstery and curtains needs.
With respect to the car: 1. Check your car, especially the mechanical components. Pay attention to brakes, lights, windscreen wipers and brake fluid, antifreeze and oil levels. 2. Don’t forget to check the condition of your tyres, including the spare wheel, checking pressure, tread and the grooves of each tyre, which must have a minimum depth of 1.6mm. 3. Always take a reflective jacket, two warning triangles and a torch with you. Also, ensure that your mo-
bile is charged in case you need to use it in an emergency. With respect to driving: 1. If you have to drive in snow, consider buying winter tyres. In any case, avoid any sudden movements and, as a general rule, do not overtake. Take special care with snow which has turned into ice, and always drive at low speeds. 2. If it is foggy or raining, adapt your speed and distance from the vehicle ahead to the weather conditions. Do not brake suddenly to avoid skidding. 3. Aim the vehicle’s heating system at the windows to prevent them from fogging up as a result of humidity. 4. When overtaking, reaching crossroads, leaving tunnels and in open spaces, be careful with any sudden gusts of wind, which might lead to a loss of steering and the vehicle overturning. By Margaret Tully THE cold weather has finally arrived - by our standards anyway - which means it is the right time for me to start sowing some seeds.
I usually get going in October and May, but it has been too hot to grow from seed successfully here in the South until now. At this time, I like to try growing the types of plants and flowers I would have sown in February or March back in the UK. I thought I’d mark this week, being colder, by chatting about plants with crispy, blue-andicy-white flowers. There are a lot to choose from, but I have selected just two. Plumbago I have Plumbago auriculata in my garden. It has the most beautiful flowers, with five petals, which form in phlox-like clusters. The plant can be grown as a climber, or formed into a bush or hedge. I have mine on a sheltered wall, with morning sun and afternoon shade. It intertwines with a vine and a honeysuckle, which is best as its foliage is not without some ugliness. When the flowers have passed over, they turn into long thin seeds,
Pretty touch of Plumbago!
with brown, dried foliage surrounding the area where the oncebeautiful flowers were. But you can let your plant seed and, at this time of year, collect them and pot them on. The other way of propagating is to take semihard cuttings, which are best gathered with a small piece of root from the base of the plant. New shoots appear around the base and can easily be pulled from the Mother plant and grown on. The word plumbago is said to come from the Latin Plumbum, meaning lead, which is why this plant is often called leadwort. When you cut lead at first, it takes on a bluish, grey colour, matching the blue of the plumbago auriculata. And also the plant sap, when on the skin, turns a bluish grey, just like lead. Don’t panic if you have this plant and notice
that it has a powdery, mildew-like substance on the underside of the leaves. This is, in fact, secreted by the plant itself and is of no harm. The seeds have a sticky, hairy feel to them, which is said to be good for propagation. That’s because animals get them stuck in their fur and carry the seed to other areas. I also have Plumbago auriculata var. alba, and, as the word alba suggests, it has icywhite flowers. There is also a red variety called Plumbago indica. Both are beautiful and attract lots of bees, butterflies and moths. They can be cut back at various times throughout the year, and I generally cut mine back when they have almost entirely become brown and dried. They regenerate very quickly, especially the blue variety. Finally, Plumbago zey-
lanica, known as Ceylon leadwort or Doctorbush, which has a white flower, is used in Asia and Africa by herbal doctors. It is even being tested as a possible cure or treatment for various types of cancer. Important: Never consume any part of a plant unless you are certain it will not harm you. Borage A blue flower you can consume is that of the Borage plant, Borago Officinalis. Often spelt with two rrs, the name
may be derived from the Italian word “borra” or the French word “bourra”, which translates as hair/wool. This describes exactly how the plant feels. It has hairy stems and leaves, with hairy, flower buds which open up to reveal a star-like flower. And that is why Borage is known as Starflower. The origins of the name are disputed but, being a Scot, I also like the suggestion that it is derived from the Celtic word barrach. That means “man of courage”, which explains why soldiers were said to tuck borage into their tunics before going into battle. Borage likes a normal soil, not too rich. The plant is sturdy and gets to about 2-3ft tall. I enjoy growing my own as they rarely fail. If you sow your seeds now, as I do, the plants will be flowering around May or June and will
continue throughout the summer months. There is also a whiteflowered variety named Borago officinalis “Bianca”. This is a herb as well and has the same properties as the blue variety. Sowing seeds When sowing any seeds, fill a pot with soil. Starting with a completely level soil means that your seedlings will come up a lot more uniformly. *Flatten out with the back of your fingers or another pot placed on top. *Lay small-to-medium seeds on top of the levelled soil *Press larger seeds into the soil to half their depth *Using a sieve or a garden colander, sieve a thin layer of fine soil over the seeds *Just cover the seeds and do not put too much soil on top because that will make it harder for the seeds to grow toward the light *Water with a sprayhead watering can or hose, making sure you do not displace the seeds *Alternatively, place the seeded pots into a tray and fill it with water to halfway up the pots. Leave them soaking for an hour or two until the top soil is lightly damp *Place in a light place - not too bright and too hot - and keep from drying out
SOW IT, GROW IT… THEN TASTE IT BORAGE flowers make excellent subjects for crystallising, as do many other edible flowers, such as heartsease violas, calendula, chamomile, to name but a few. Even individual petals, such as tea-rose petals can be nice. Although you cannot generally get these flowers at this time of year, you can at least start to sow your seeds.
Crystallised edible flower petals Ingredients 1 egg Few drops of water 1 cup of caster sugar Small paint brush Rack with a piece of baking paper on it Method *Clean and pat dry the flowers, making sure you remove the inner and outer parts and the stem, leaving only the

petals *Separate the egg white from the yolk *Put the egg white into a bowl with the few drops of water *Beat lightly until the mixture froths slightly *Put the caster sugar into a shallow dish *Hold a flower in one hand and, using the paint brush, dip the
paint brush into the egg-white mixture *Paint the flower with gentle strokes, making sure you cover it all evenly, without putting too much on *Hold the now-coated flower over the sugar dish and, using a small spoon, sprinkle the sugar on to the flower. The egg-white mixture acts
as a glue and the sugar will stick *Again, an even coat is required, and make sure both sides of the flower are coated *Place the sugared flower on to the rack to dry *Make sure the flowers are completely dry before storing in an airtight container. They
will dry in 1-3 days You can place them in an oven on the lowest heat, with the door open but what a waste of energy! Best leave the rack in a moisturefree area with an even temperature Once the flowers have crystallised, they keep for up to 12 months, so throughout 2014, you would have some tasty, edible flowers to decorate your winter cakes.

Santa’s ready Have you been naughty? ...but are you? Blame your grandad! B EH A V I O U R can be affected by events in previous generations, which have been passed on through a form of genetic memory.
By Carl from Robot WITH under three weeks to go to the big day, I hope your plans are made and that your hair is going to be looking its best this party season Many of my clients are booking in for a new treatment we are calling “hair botox”. It literally “fills in” your hair strands which need repairing, and adds body to any type of hair. I’ve been sold these types of treatments before, but they have been so laborious to apply, taking up my time and that of the clients. However, the beauty of this one is that it takes just 10 minutes to turn around all manner of damage to your hair. It works so well on fine hair as it swells the core, giving you more volume and bounce. It is perfect for this time of year because it makes sure
Page 40
your locks are looking fabulous. The treatment works by replacing the hair’s natural keratin, which is the building block of your strands. And without this, your hair will break and/or become very dry. That’s why this treatment will give you smooth, stronger hair in just a extra few minutes of salon time. Add this to our Argan oil range of products we recommend to all our clients and voila - no excuse for bad hair this Christmas, or whenever the mood takes you. All of our services and
our at-home products are available in giftpack form, so it’s no use you’ve run out of ideas for presents. For the one you love, or even for a friend, we have gift vouchers that start from as little as 10 euros. They are ideal as little stocking-fillers when you simply have no idea what to get that special person. Having your hair done normally isn’t a luxury and for most, it’s a necessity. Remember, without your hair looking good, that new outfit will not have the “WOW” factor.
Experiments on mice have shown that a traumatic event could affect the DNA in sperm and alter the brains and behaviour of subsequent generations. A Nature Neuroscience study showed the animals, trained to avoid a smell, passed their aversion on to their “grandchildren”. Experts said the results were important for phobia and anxiety research. The animals were trained to fear a smell similar to cherry blossom. And researchers at America’s Emory University School of Medicine then looked at what was happening inside the sperm. They showed a sec-
tion of DNA responsible for sensitivity to the cherry-blossom scent was made more active in the mice’s sperm. Both the mice’s offspring, and their offspring, were “extremely sensitive” to cherry blossom and would avoid the scent, despite never having experiencing it in their lives. The researchers’ report concluded: “The experiences of a parent, even before conceiving, markedly influence both structure and function in the nervous system of subsequent generations.” The findings provide evidence that the environment can affect an individual’s genetics, which can in turn be passed on. One of the researchers, Dr Brian Dias, told the BBC: “This might be one mechanism that descendants show imprints of their ancestor. “There is absolutely no doubt that what happens to the sperm
and egg will affect subsequent generations.” Prof Marcus Pembrey, from University College London, said the findings were “highly relevant to phobias, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorders”. He agreed that the tests provided “compelling evidence” that a form of memory could be passed between generations, adding: “It is high time public health researchers took human transgenerational responses seriously. “I suspect we will not understand the rise in neuro-psychiatric disorders or obesity, diabetes and metabolic disruptions generally without taking a multi-generational approach.” In the smell-aversion study, is it thought that either some of the odour ended up in the bloodstream, which affected sperm production, or that a signal from the brain was sent to the sperm to alter DNA.

Onesie twosie tartans back!
Exercise can make the oldies glow… and go! By Val Sainsbury TAKING regular exercise even in later life can make you up to seven times more likely to stay healthy.
Leading an active lifestyle can increase your expectancy Those who are active as pensioners can stave off major illnesses such as heart disease and dementia. An eight-year British study found that those who exercised at least once a week were between three and seven times more likely to be classed as “healthy agers”. Researchers say being active is the key to preventing serious disease and disability. Regular exercise also bolsters mental health by protecting against depression. Doireann Maddock, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “This shows us that even if you don’t become active until later in life your health will benefit. “However, there’s no need to wait until retirement to get started. Adults should try to be active daily and aim for 150 minutes of activities that get you breathing harder and feeling warmer each week. “Every 10 minutes counts, so even hopping off the bus a couple of stops early or taking a brisk walk on your lunch break will help.” 150 minutes working out a week is recommended [GETTY - PIC POSED] The researchers, led by Dr Mark Hamer at University College London, wrote: “Sustained physical activity was associated with improved healthy ageing – absence of disease, freedom from disability, high cognitive and physical functioning, good mental health. “Significant health benefits were even seen among participants who became active relatively late in life. “The results support public health initiatives
designed to engage older adults in physical activity.” The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, tracked 3,500 people with an average age of 64 for more than eight years. Researchers were looking not only at the absence of major disease or disability, but at mental health. This included cognitive dexterity and the ability to maintain social connections and activities. The findings add to a growing body of evidence to suggest that regular physical activity is essential for maintaining good health as the country’s population ages. Across the developed world, doctors rank inactivity alongside smoking, excess drinking and obesity as a leading cause of reduced life expectancy. In the latest study, participants answered detailed questions every two years about the frequency and intensity of their physical activity. Researchers also performed a battery of cognitive tests. Doctors ranked inac-

tivity alongside smoking, excess drinking and obesity [GETTY] Seven out of 10 people who had been active at the start of the study remained so while nearly one in 10 took up regular exercise. The rest remained inactive or became inactive. By the end of the study almost four out of 10 had developed a longterm condition while almost two in 10 was depressed. Meanwhile, a third had some level of disability and two in 10 suffered a cognitive impairment. The researchers concluded that nearly one in five (19.3 per cent) could be classed as “healthy agers”. There was a direct link to the amount of exercise taken. After four years of regular activity, people are three times more likely to age healthily. After eight years this was seven times as likely. Scientific research across the world has consistently hailed the benefits of keeping fit in old age. Last year a study showed that women who have an active lifestyle can increase life expectancy by five years. For men, it was six years. Figures released by the Office For National Statistics also revealed that Britons are living longer than ever before – and can expect to spend more than 80 per cent of our lives in good health.
By Ruth Benson AS the dark nights and colder evenings draw in, we start to dig out our winter wardrobes.
In the UK, it’s a time for woolly jumpers and hats and scarves. But here in Tenerife, the weather can change from one day to the next. One minute we can be in shorts and T-shirts, and the next in jumpers and jeans. But one winter fashion which took the UK by storm last year now seems to be popular over here with expats, and that is the onesie. Although you may struggle to buy them here, they still seem to be very popular. This year, not only do we have the onesie but also the twosie - for those couples wanting to keep themselves hot as well as warm! The twosie consists of two hoods, three legs and four arms. It is being marketed in the UK as a method of staying warm together in a fun way, while keeping the fuel bills down and the fires burning bright. On a more serious note, this winter’s fashion trends see the return of tartan, checks and squares to UK stores. For many, this brings back memories of childhood and school uniforms consisting of ugly, polyester, plaid
skirts and jumpers, or kilts with those huge pins in the front. Tartan is most commonly associated with Scottish men and kilts. And it was also made popular in the late Seventies and early Eighties through the punk scene. Tartan, plaid, squares and cheques have floated in and out of fashion since then. And this winter season, it is an essential for everyone’s wardrobe. However, it’s what you wear with it that makes it fashionable. It can be anything from a tartan jumper or skirt to a small addition of a scarf or bag. Plaid or tartan should be worn this winter with loose, comfortablefitting jumpers, floral or leather. But never combine
two tartans together because, although Rod Stewart may be able to wear it well, most of us wouldn’t. Also popular this season, which was a hit last winter, is monochrome. Black and white is always a must for anyone’s wardrobe, and the colours look good on their own or together. And this winter, it’s out in force. Bodycon dresses, maxi dresses … any style suits this combination. Monochrome is popular with men and women and should be accessorised with just one other dominant colour to get the full effect. So this winter, whether you go for pattern or plain, there really is something for everyone.

A heart-beat from danger? HIGH-CAFFEINE energy drinks change the way the heart beats and could increase the risk of potentially fatal heart-rhythm problems.
Testing has shown that the heart contraction rates of healthy adults who consumed the drinks increased significantly after an hour. This means the chamber of the heart which pumps blood around the body - the left ventricle - was then contracting harder. German researchers examined the effect of soft drinks high in caffeine and taurine - such as those of the Red Bull type - on 18 healthy adults with an average age of 27.5 years. Each of the volunteers underwent MRI scan of the heart before and an hour after consuming an energy drink containing taurine (400 mg/100 ml) and caffeine (32 mg/100 ml). After the drink, these people had “significantly increased peak strain” and contractility in the left ventricle of the heart. That’s the part that receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it to the aorta, which distributes it throughout the rest of the body. Basically, it means that their left ventricle over-expanded and over-contracted, which
Page 42
could be dangerous. Dr Jonas Dörner, of the cardiovascular imaging section at Bonn University, said: “Until now, we haven’t known exactly what effect these energy drinks have on the function of the heart. They usually contain taurine and caffeine as their main pharmacological ingredients, and the amount of caffeine is up to three times higher than in other caffeinated beverages, like coffee or cola. “There are many sideeffects known to be associated with a high intake of caffeine, including rapid heart rate, palpitations, rise in blood pressure and, in the most severe cases, seizures or sudden death.” He added: “We don’t know exactly how or if this greater contractility of the heart has an impact on daily activities or athletic performances. “We need additional studies to understand this mechanism, and to determine how long
the effect of the energy drink lasts.” The researchers found no significant differences in heart rate, blood pressure or the amount of blood ejected from the heart’s left ventricle before or after the energy drink was consumed. However, Dr. Dörner said that while longterm risks to the heart from drinking energy drinks remain unknown, then children, and especially people with known heart rhythm problems (cardiac arrhythmia), should avoid energy drinks, because changes in contractility could trigger arrhythmias. He warned that alcohol could increase heart rate, so mixing energy drinks with it could compound the problem. “There are concerns about the products’ potentially-adverse side-effects on heart function, especially in adolescents and young adults,” he said. “But there is little or no regulation of energy-drink sales.”

Food Review
El Corral del pollo de Adeje
It’s simply mouth-watering! IF you are looking for somewhere to dine out, with a price that suits your purse, plus excellent food and staff to match, then El Corral del Pollo de Adeje is the new place to be!
The restaurant has been open since 1st August only but, with just a month gone, the owners are already enjoying full houses most days - whether it be lunch or dinner. And that alone tells you just how fabulous the food is! It is owned by Tayo and Lindi, daughter of Pedro and Angeles, who opened the Oasis Restaurant - the original “chicken Shack” - in the old village of Adeje 50 years ago. That had a fantastic reputation, which speaks highly of this new venture because Tayo was the chef there, and he has now transferred his kitchen expertise to this new restaurant, The whole family have a part in taking care of you. They are extremely friendly and attentive -and there sole desire is to make your visit such a success that you will want to return. We went along this week because various friends of the office had recommended it, and it was a great surprise - what a lovely night it turned out to be1 You can sit inside or outside on the terrace, but our choice was de-
cided as the latter was full, and anyway, inside is air-conditioned. We were shown to our table by Lindi, whom I had met on a previous occasion with her husband Tayo. They are a lovely, friendly couple, and we could see right from our arrival that they were going to make our night out a success. Lindi immediately took our drinks order and my colleague decided to try a typical Canarian white wine. I, of course, had still water as I was driving. There is no menu as it’s a variation of chicken dishes, either spicy or non-spicy. First to arrive was the fresh bread and homemade garlic butter, which was really tasty! Then came the salad a fresh combination of home-grown tomatoes, onions and lettuce. I’m not a huge salad lover, but it was so fresh, with crispy lettuce, that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Finally, last to arrive was the crème de la crème - the famous “Adeje Chicken”, accompanied by a separate
6th December - 12th December 2013
plate of chips. We had decided to try both types of the chicken and … well words failed me as the secret was in the coating, and that alone was delicious - a family recipe with mouth - watering tender chicken,
cooked to perfection! We managed to have a chat with Lindi and Tayo during the evening. They told us they felt that, having worked in the family restaurant most of their lives, it was time for them to
carry on the family tradition but to break out on their own. Already, with the terrific support they have experienced from customers in these early days, they can see it was the right decision. After our abundance of chicken, we decided we couldn’t resist a dessert. There are two menus: special ice-creams and home-made ones. I had to go for the white chocolate mousse, which was very light and absolutely delicious. My colleague tried the cranberry cheesecake, which was home-made and again delicious. We finished with a coffee and a coffee liquor, home-made by Tayo and again, from a secret family recipe! I would recommend El Corral del Pollo to anyone as it represents great value for money, with a friendly atmosphere. And, most importantly, everything we ate was delicious. It is located in the Ave-
nida de Los Oceanos No 9, in the new part of Adeje but not far from the original village. To get there, take the original turn-off from the motorway and go up to the second roundabout, opposite the cemetery. Turn left and straight over and then, on the first junction, look to the right and there it is! The parking is excellent, which is important, and there’s a bus stop right over the road where two buses pass by regularly - the 417 Los Cristianos to Guia de Isora route and the 473, which runs from Los Cristianos to Los Gigantes - and they are available up to 11.30pm. So, if you don’t fancy taking the car in order to enjoy the local wine, you can hop on a bus. To make sure of getting a table, give Tayo or Lindi a call on 922 775 841. The restaurant is open seven days a week, from 12 noon till 10.30pm.

Honda make you pay the price to join Estate class By Jav HONDA’S new Civic Tourer offers excellent practicality, an accomplished ride and a strong, clean, diesel engine.
And that adds up to the company producing a convincing rival for small, family estate stalwarts - even though it seems pricey against the established competition. The SEAT Leon is more than four grand cheaper, while the entrylevel 1.8 i-VTEC S, starting at £20,265, costs a huge £3,590 more than the cheapest Leon ST. But the compact estate market is growing steadily, and in an attempt to break into it, Honda have added a wagon body style to their Civic range for the first time since the Mk6 Aerodeck departed in 2001. Contenders range from the ageing Ford Focus Estate and Vauxhall As-
tra Sport Tourer, to the VW Group’s Skoda Octavia Estate, Volkswagen Golf Estate and Seat Leon ST trio, as well as the Hyundai i30 Tourer and Kia Cee’d SW. But Honda are making a good fist of it. The Tourer matches the Civic hatch up to the Bpillars, and has the same wheelbase, but it is a good 235mm longer in rear overhang. Far from distorting the hatchback’s design, however, the estate probably offers a more balanced look of the two. Just look at some if its
rivals, such as the Golf estate and Octavia estate, and you’ll see it has a far more interesting appearance. And despite its wedgelike profile, the Tourer boasts a class-leading 624 litres of boot space below its retractable, stowable tonneau cover, including 117 litres beneath the two-stage false floor. Thanks partly to the fuel tank being unusually sited under the front seats, and the spaceefficient rear torsion beam suspension, the seats can be folded flat
to create an enormous 1,668-litre space. This is sensibly shaped and easily accessible via the kneeheight boot lid, which is almost flush to the floor. You can also create a tall, central-load space by flipping up the rear-seat squabs. Up front, the firm, supportive seats are roundly adjustable, as is the steering column, and the combination of high-quality plastic finishes and interior design to match the adventurous exterior impress.
There’s room for one six-footer sitting behind another with just enough legroom and headroom. Honda offer two engines to choose from: a 118bhp 1.6 i-DTEC turbo-diesel and a 140bhp i-VTEC petrol. Both are supplied with a slick six-speed manual gearbox, while the petrol car can also be specced with a fivespeed torque converter. The diesel costs £1,010-£1,210 more than the manual petrol, but it is 60% more fuel efficient (72-74mpg against
43-45.6mpg), so most will soon recoup the premium. And it is the better performer, too. The manual petrol is quicker from 0-62mph (9.2sec v 10.1sec for the diesel), but is struggling for breath immediately, while the i-DTEC pulls strongly from low down and plays on its massive torque advantage as revs climb. The entry-level S brings Bluetooth, digital radio and 16-inch alloys. Another £1,600 or so buys SE Plus, with rear-parking sensors and 17-in alloys. But keyless entry/start and self-levelling highintensity headlights are among top-spec-only extras. Two generous levels of sensor-based driver assistance and safety kit are also available, costing around £800 and £,2500 respectively. The Tourer’s huge, versatile load space and comfortable ride make it an attractive proposition, as long as you’re not after a spirited drive - and you can afford the extra wonga.
Forget all the rumours, here’s how to buy a car By Emma Swain MANY people offer conflicting advice on what is ACTUALLY needed to buy a car.
So I am putting to bed these rumours and errors and telling you exactly what is required, and what both buyer and seller need to do. Firstly, let’s look at the sellers. Obviously, if selling privately, they must advertise or spread their request by word of mouth. If selling to a garage or partexchanging, this section of the process is cut out. Once a buyer is found, the transfer process starts. An individual
Page 44
seller will need to provide a copy of his NIE/RESIDENCIA or DNI. If the person holds a NIE or RESIDENCIA only, a copy of an upto-date passport is also required. If the passport date has expired, occasionally a photocopy of the old passport and current photo card driving licence, either Spanish or European, may be accepted by Tráfico. The forms, which must be signed by the seller, are the CONTRATO DE COMPRA-VENTA and the TASA for Tráfico (Solictud de transmisión de vehículo). The seller should also provide proof that the current year’s road tax-
es (Impuesto Vehículos Tracción Mecánica) have been paid as this information may sometimes not have reached Tráfico. If it is shown as unpaid, a transfer cannot be completed. Town Halls, as a matter of course, now advise Tráfico of outstanding road taxes, which is a way of getting their money as it effectively blocks a transfer until that debt is cleared. The purchaser must have an NIE to complete the transfer but, in some cases, can buy the car before obtaining one of these. The buyer will need to sign the CONTRATO DE COMPRA-VENTA, the TASA for Tráfico, the Modelo 620 and, if
someone else is doing the transfer on his behalf, an authorisation for Tráfico as well. He will have to supply copies of the documents for Hacienda and the ORIGINALS for Tráfico: i.e: Passport, NIE/RESIDENCIA/DNI and proof of address, a CERTIFICADO DE EMPADRONA-MIENTO, a rental contract or an ESCRITURA DE PROPIEDAD (property deeds). Tax is payable on all purchases, and, while it is normally the buyer’s responsibility, it is in the interest of the seller to ensure the transfer out of his name is completed and often, the cost is split. The current rate
of tax is 5.5% of the official valuation, which often has no bearing whatsoever on the price being paid. You can find the official valuation at www.aeat.es (which is partly available in English) or by calling 012 and asking. To obtain an accurate valuation, you will need the exact make, model, the number of doors and original date of first registration, together with potencia fiscal and engine size, all of which is normally available on the car’s Ficha Técnica. If a car (not vans) is over 10 years old, the rules are slightly different and fixed taxes apply. Cars 0-1,000cc: tax due 40 euros
1,001-1,500 cc: 70 euros 1,501-2,000cc: 115 euros If the car is over 10 years old and the engine is bigger that a 2,000cc (i.e: 2.2 ltr) then the normal rules apply. Before buying a car privately, it is important to check that there are no embargoes or debts on the car, and Motorworld is able to do this for you, as are other legally-registered companies. If you do not do this and find at Tráfico there is an embargo on the car, it can be difficult to sort out. Sometimes, it is not cost-effective to do so, rendering the car worthless and unsaleable.

Striking a chord for Sweet Lucy Appeal
THE 3 Horseshoes bar in Callao Salvaje is holding a special charity event for Lucy Cook next Saturday (14th Dec). Lucy, who is 12, moved to Tenerife with her parents six years ago and suffers from a rare condition SNA (Sensory Neuropathy Ataxia). It means she was born missing a gene in her brain, which affects co-ordination and sensation. She also suffers from numerous health problems and requires special treatment. And now, Lucy is in desperate need of a new electric wheelchair. The Sweet Lucy Appeal event, which starts at 5pm, has been organised by the Santiago del Teide Lions Club, and various entertainers have kindly donated their time, right from the off and going through the night. Stevie D, Pete Quilty and Dawn Kelly will host the show, and entertainers include

Great getaway for Accion lucky five del Sol news SO many dogs are abandoned on the Island, and it is difficult for refuges to find loving homes for them. Accion del Sol, in Granadilla, works flat-out to try to give its many refuge dogs a better life, but it is a never-ending struggle as more and more dogs are brought in. There was happy news last Friday when five lucky pooches flew to Germany to start their new lives. Meanwhile, six strays were brought in from the streets. On another upbeat note, the badly-nourished Podenco (pictured) rescued last week from Vilaflor, is making excellent progress and has settled in well at the refuge. Our Christmas fund-
raiser takes place on Sunday, from 2pm, and a fun-filled afternoon is guaranteed. There will be singing, dancing, a bouncy castle, raffle, face-painting, a children’s workshop making Xmas presents,
cake stall, kids’ party games and horse-riding Father Christmas will also be there handing out presents. You will have an opportunity to view the refuge and see some of the many gorgeous
dogs there, as well as meeting some of the staff who work so hard helping to improve the lives of all the dogs here. If you feel you can help them in any way, please call 922 778 630 for more information, Towels and blankets are always needed for the dogs if you have any to spare, as well as puppy milk for our numerous little ones. The refuge, situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the Ecological Park where the windmills are, is open to the public Monday-Friday (3-6pm). So if you are interested in adopting a dog, or maybe just taking one or two for a leisurely walk, please pop in.
Fund-raising Wingate’s gifts of for puppy love love for orphans Live Arico (PAWS) news IN the past few months, Live Arico has rescued and rehomed many puppies, which will be neutered in the new year. This is to comply with our ethos that all pets should be neutered - both for the good of their health and to help reduce the massive problem of unwanted animals on the Island. The money raised from the sale of our 2014 Calendar and Christmas cards will be used for this project. Both have been created and printed by us to maximise profits. The cards can be purchased in the Live Arico
shops, and you can buy the calendar in the following places: Live Arico shops in Los Cristianos and San Eugenio; Studio 5 Hair Salon; Los Cristianos Harbour Club; Los Gigantes Beauty Within; Los Gigantes Slippers; Top Square San Blas; Port Royale Reception, Los Cristianos; Los Abrigos Auction Rooms; Cats Welfare Shop, San Blas/ Market; The Cozy Café, Las Americas (near Casino); Hospivet, Las Chafiris; Headquarters Hair Salon, San Eugenio; Veterinarian Cesar Casablanca chalet nº 3 E- 38611 Poris de Abona - Arico.
WINGATE School pupils have again been generous in providing more than 100 gifts for various orphanages on the Island. Each year, the Lions Club of Tenerife Sur organise an outing for two coachloads of children and their carers, bringing them to Aqualand for a day of fun and partying. To w a r d s the end of the day, F a t h e r Christmas arrives and, thanks to the kindness of the Wingate
School children, and also the staff and members of the 6th Form, his sack of presents is always overflowing. Lions’ President Norman Goodall is pictured accepting the sacks of gifts, which had been wrapped by the 6th. Form, and he thanked Alison Finnie and everyone involved in this wonderful project.
Early Xmas dinner on a night of music SAN MIGUEL Lions’ members celebrate their 15th birthday on the club’s Charter Night next Saturday (14th Dec) at The Chicken Shack restaurant, Alondras Park, Silencio. The meal is a full English Christmas Dinner, followed by a night of entertainment with some of the
top acts on the Island. The event begins at 7pm for a 7.30pm start, so come along and celebrate with your local Lions, friends and supporters. More information and tickets, costing 20 euros, can be obtained from Club Secretary Ralph on 685 542 128.

Wonderkid slaughters those Derby donkeys!
Girona 2 CD Tenerife 2 CD Tenerife 3 Las Palmas 0 IF Carlsberg did comebacks... After nearly three years of pain, CD Tenerife can honestly say they are back. And boy, does it feel good.
The heartache of a last-day La Liga relegation, the annus horribilis that saw another relegation and five managers, and then play-off heartache. The in-fighting, the fall-out between players and fans and the sickening 2-0 home defeat at the hands of SS Reyes, who last week couldn’t beat Atletico de Pinto in front of 58 fans. Nightmares banished the annals of history! On Wednesday Tenerife destroyed arch-rivals Las Palmas. The “contest” was so one-sided Position
Poor old Ricardo must have been sore on Thursday as he literally put his body on the line. Doing this job, you leave yourself open to ridicule when you get it wrong. But when you get it right… Last week I wrote: “They (Las Palmas) like a card, and it will be interesting to see if they can ride out some injuries and suspensions ... they look a little suspect at the back,
that I was waiting for Howard Foster to tap the ref on the shoulder and call the match off. Over 18,000 fans packed into the Heliodoro and, after giving the visitors the traditional “welcome”, it was all about the home side. As was widely predicted, manager Alvaro Cervera went for the tubthumpers. He started with six Tenerife-born lads, who duly gave their all.

with a dodgy keeper in Barbosa.” Tenerife were in charge early on and, after 20 minutes, Suso broke clear. He skipped past the static defence and went to round Barbosa who, stupidly, bundled him over. The easiest red card and pen you will ever see in your life. It took a full two minutes for Barbosa to leave. During which he got another yellow card and tried some afters with Aridane. Let’s just say he came off second best. Ricardo doesn’t miss from 12 yards and he thumped the spot-kick past kid goalie Lizoain. To be fair, the youngster had a decent match. But he was let down by the men in custard shirts. With home tails up,
and an extra man, Tenerife dominated. Las Palmas looked leggy and had no stomach for a fight. I ALMOST felt sorry for the travelling fans. I’ve seen Las Palmas play a few times this year and this was a horror show. But Tenerife take all the credit for that. The Roberto-RuizSanz-Ayoze spine is there for all to see. With Suso in inspired form, Aridane bullying the centre-backs and Ayoze’s pace scaring the life out of anyone in yellow, the only shock was that Tenerife didn’t score more. A brilliant Ayoze run was wonderfully finished off on the hour mark and, 10 minutes later, Suso broke Las Palmas’s spirit as his
mazy run was stroked home by Ayoze the wonderkid. It was an amazing night and one for the memory banks. Following the gritty draw in Girona on Sunday, it’s now eight unbeaten and Tenerife are 11th. Three points off third! Even-stevens evening (part 2) THOSE of us who used to do the football pools will recall the phrase “perm 8 from 10”. Well, the Oasis Fm Darts League permed 8 from 16 last Friday! Yes, that’s eight draws from 16 matches - and of the eight wins, five were decided on the last leg. And that proves again that although our darts league is played in the finest spirit, it is also exceptionally competitive. Only Palms Sports Bar recorded a win in
the Premier league, beating The Pub 6-2, while chairman Harry and Gaffers A’s Dennis swapped maximums as Phoenix Bar were held to one of four tied fixtures in the top division. La Caña Pirates took the last rubber against Bar 180 A, a feat matched by the Naturals at Scruffy Macs and Vikings Ensecan at Target Titans. All six ties in Division One went down to lastleg drama. Joerie hit a 180 for Rood as they

squeaked past Emerald Lounge, and Rob hit one for Bar 180 C during their last-gasp win over Summerland. Gaffers B lost ground at the top when losing at Barracuda Bytes, while Marilyns, Chipeque and Trap Door all won their trebles legs to finish all-square at 4-4. Division 2 seems quite boring after that lot! Third played fourth at Picasso’s as they entertained La Caña Lancers, and guess what happened? Yes, they
drew. Phoenix Flights last tasted defeat on 20th September, and they continued their run with a solid 6-2 win over Sundowners. The Hunters matched that scoreline as they beat Ourplace Playgirls. Pas O Nadas nicked the trebles for victory over Bar 180 D, while Amistad 2 did likewise to squeeze past The Rebels. There is certain to be more drama tonight (Friday) as we take a break from league action to do battle in the

Gaffers blow league wide open LEAGUE chairman Roscoe described it as “The best match ever played in the league’s history”, and it’s hard to disagree. Gaffers A knew it was victory or bust as they faced Tenerife Hammers A on Tuesday. They started the night seven points adrift of the champions. But it was on their mind that if they cut the margin to four, they would be able to mount a real title charge. And they flew out of the traps. Ashley and Neil beat Jambo and Paul to give them the perfect start, and when it became 3-0 they were bouncing. Hammers hit back though 1-3, 2-3 and then at 3-3 it was game-on. Gaffers went back in front only for Hammers to level. It was nervy, the tension was everywhere and the lads on the other table almost forgot they were playing a league match as well. For the record, Palms A comfortably accounted for The Peacocks 7-5. Back on table 2, it was still anyone’s match at the end of the “second set”, but when Gaffers took a 6-4 lead they looked home and hosed. But Jambo was next up and he was in control against Kevin. He had a straight black into the
middle bag to win, but somehow missed. Kevin took a deep breath, cut in a fine black and the Gaffers lads exploded. But the cue ball was still travelling. It hit three cushions and rolled into the same middle pocket. In the last frame Wez was in charge. Potting and tucking, he looked favourite to win and snatch a draw. However, Gaffers Jefe Neil had a plan. He was happy for Wez’s balls to disappear and then, like a cobra, he pounced. It wasn’t easy, but he completed a six-ball clearance deftly to take the frame, the match, the Hammers’ unbeaten record and give the title race a shot in the arm. Elsewhere in the top division, third-place Phoenix Knights could manage a draw only against The Exiles A, while Bar La Caña A were beaten this week by the improving Tenerife Hammers C. Captain Tony again proved the difference between the two sides as he won all his three games again. Phoenix Potters kept up their point-scoring run with an 8-4 win against Toscales A, who still find themselves bottom of the league looking for their first win of the season. The match was tight,

That first win could be just around the corner. Dreamers also kept up their run of form, beating out-of-sorts Terrace A. It has been a while since the Amarilla Golf team picked up points, but they had their chances in this game. Captain Adi had a chance in the last game to snatch a draw, but it just wasn’t to be, with Dreamers getting over the line, thanks to Steve and Gav both winning all their games. It was an-off night for the Terrace’s Mal, but
maybe that had to do with the six-car pile-up he caused on Tuesday morning! Inn the Pink A boys went to the Treehouse like Tarzan and came back like Jane (their own words). Outstanding performance of the night goes to Carl from Treehouse A as he pulled off two seven-ball wins, helping the Chayofa team to all three points. In the Second Division, league leaders Inn the Pink B were not troubled by 2JZ’s coming out on top 8-4 to keep themselves a point above James Place, who thumped Picasso’s A 11-1.

Kandi 13 are also looking to move closer to the top, as they are only five points adrift of third place. They took on Bar La Caña B and quickly found themselves 4-1 down. But they dug deep and came back to win the game 7-5 eventually, James breaking his six-game losing streak and winning three from three.
FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE BEING a Fantasy Football manager can be a hard task, given the fact that you have to pick players from other teams - players you may not particularly like! I know for a fact that one leading manager is a Man Utd fan, who will have been cursing his own team’s performance on Wednesday night, while secretly cheering on Luis Suarez. Everybody’s favourite
Page 54
pantomime villain has really turned the Oasis Fm Fantasy League on its head with an outstanding individual performance. If you had Luis Suarez in your team and he were your captain, he was worth a massive 48 points on Wednesday. It has seen a shift in the top 10 with several teams moving towards the top, courtesy of his goals and performance. It appeared at one point
that this week’s Team of the Week honour would be shared. But there was one side who came out head and shoulders above the others. Before we come to that, though, it was worth mentioning those who came close: Michael Dwyer’s ‘Shankly’s Best’ with 102 points, Andy Palmer’s ‘Premier Sat Utd’ & David Clarke’s ‘Run-DMC-11’ both with 103 points. But this
week’s Team of the Week goes to Jamie Palmer’s ‘The Spartans’, with an impressive 121 points, which moves him nicely up the league. The battle of the Oasis Fm DJs is still going and, though a few places were lost and gained, it is pretty much as it was last week. But Roscoe is on the move and is now ahead of Chris Elkington and just a place behind Maggie Lennard.

By Adi Benson WHAT a week it has been in the Barclays Premier League, which proves the point that it is the most exciting league to watch.
You get a feeling that this season could well be the closest it has ever been,. Back in August, I tipped Man City to reclaim the crown, and I am sticking to my guns on that one. If they can address their away form, I think they will still be the team to beat. But you can be sure Arsenal and Chelsea will give it a good go. The last lot of games have come and gone, so now we can now turn our attention to this weekend. Man Utd v Newcastle Utd Both teams are coming into this game on the back of losses. Normally, you’d look at this fixture and go with a home win, but Old Trafford is not the fortress it once was. Teams are going there now believing they can win, and Newcastle will be no different. David Moyes has got to get the belief back in his squad if they are to have any chance of qualification for the Champions League. And they need to start with this game. But there is no Rooney, and RVP is a major doubt. Prediction: Draw Crystal Palace v Cardiff With Palace upsetting West Ham on Tuesday, they will be really looking forward to this second home game in a row. Confidence will be high in the squad, because they have moved off the bottom of the league - and Marouane Chamakh scored! Cardiff managed a point and a clean sheet at Stoke, and they will have this down as a must-win match. Prediction: Home win Liverpool v West Ham I imagine West
Man City still have title look
Ham are not looking forward to going to Anfield, especially with Luis Suarez in such magnificent form against Norwich. The question is: will Big Sam implement a system to try and stop him? The Hammers were disappointed not to get anything from the Palace game and they looked the better side. But their lack of goals is a major concern. I get stick for always predicting a Liverpool win, but these are the fixtures they should be winning if they are to finish top four. Prediction: Home win Southampton v Man City The Saints have had a sticky week, with backto-back defeats and their squad is starting to look a little thin. And just when you are struggling, Man City come to town. At home, City have been excellent but the away form has been poor, yet despite a few rough moments against West Brom, they saw the game out. It’s going to be a tough task on the South Coast for them but they should just edge it. Prediction: Away win Stoke v Chelsea Stoke were always hard to beat under
6th December - 12th December 2013
Tony Pulis, but since Mark Hughes arrived and introduced a new style of play, they just don’t seem as strong defensively. They drew against Cardiff, but Chelsea will prove a different test and their defensive frailties could really be exposed. That said, Chelsea are hard to work out as well. They blow hot and cold, but they are getting the points. If they are going to win the league, Mourinho needs to work out his best 11 and stop
chopping and changing. Prediction: Away win West Brom v Norwich These two teams, on paper, should be doing better than they are. West Brom started the season well, but have been going backwards in recent weeks, while Norwich, who have a good squad, have never really got going. They’ve had more spankings than a Tory MP. Either side can win this one if they can perform to the best of their abilities. But you
fear for Norwich, whose confidence has been knocked for six. Prediction: Home win Sunderland v Spurs After a brave home defeat against Chelsea, Sunderland are back at the bottom of the league. If they can carry on playing like they did on Wednesday, they may just stay up. Spurs have been somewhat of a conundrum this season, spending heavily in the summer and assembling a strong squad. But
you never know which team will turn up and Sunderland could get something from this game. Prediction: Draw Fulham v Aston Villa So Martin Jol was finally sacked but, unfortunately, it was business as usual for Fulham against Spurs, as they slipped 2-1. They have a real problem with the ageing squad, and by the time the transfer window opens it could be too late. Villa, meanwhile, have been getting on with business. They earned a good three points against Southampton, and Benteke has yet to find his scoring boots! They are now in the top half of the table, and don’t bet against them staying there! Prediction: Away win Arsenal v Everton Arsenal continue to be the front-runners and are going nicely. They will also be looking to strengthen their position come the January transfer window with some new signings. Everton are also playing well and will be full of confidence after beating Man Utd. They are good defensively and will look to frustrate Arsenal and try to hit them on the counter. It’s a tough task, but they are capable of pulling it off. Prediction: Draw Swansea v Hull Swansea look to have got their confidence back with a great win against Newcastle, whereas Hull have had an up and down week: the euphoria of beating Liverpool, but then coming back down to earth with a bump against Arsenal. On paper both teams are well matched, Swansea play the better football, though, and if they can perform as they did in midweek, they should have enough to pick up the points but Hull can be resilient. Prediction: Home win
