YOUR CHANCE FOR CHANGE! THE European Union, scourge of the British Government at times, affects all of our lives even in Tenerife and the next elections are just around the corner.
Every European citizen is entitled to have his/her say in the European Elections taking place this year, including the many British expats living here. They are being held from 22nd May, but election day in Spain - and the Canaries, of course - is 25th May. But you won’t be able to make your mark unless you are registered on the Electoral Census and the Residents’ Register (the Padrón). Some people will obviously believe that what happens in Brussels or Strasbourg is too far away to affect us here in Tenerife or the other Canary Islands. But that is simply not true.
Increasingly, what occurs at European level has a direct impact on our daily lives, and every vote counts, especially given the Canaries’ status as an “ultraperipheral region”. If you are not yet registered, you have until 31st January to put
that right - and make it known that you intend to vote in Spain. This is to ensure that you don’t vote in more than one country. Elections are taking place over a number of days, so, in theory at least, it would be possible for you to vote in various
countries. The Electoral Census office has sent letters to many European citizens who have not already signed on the Electoral Census. But if you have received such a letter, all you need do is sign it and return it to the
indicated address. However, if you haven’t received any communication but would like to vote, call into your local Town Hall and say you wish to register on the electoral census for the right to vote. You must be on the municipal residents’ register (Padrón) and if you’re not, then you can do this at the same time. For identification purposes, you will need your passport and your resident’s certificate, ensuring that your address is up to date. There will also be a short period after the closing date, yet to be determined, when you can check that your details have been registered properly.
Since the last European Elections, the rules have changed. The European Parliament now has more power, both to set the political direction of Europe and over the day-to-day decisions which affect us all. A more powerful European Parliament means more influence for everyone, more ability to deal with our problems, more ability to change what needs changing, and more assertiveness to conserve what we want to keep. It adds up to a genuinely important vote – and yours really counts, for everyone’s sake. So make sure you have it, and use it. The elections will decide who takes up the 751 MEP seats in the European parliament. Over 500 million people are eligible to vote over the three-day voting period although traditionally, numbers are low. An MEP is voted in for a five-year term. In Spain, 54 seats are up for grabs.
Cabildo dishes out 30m to enhance top tourist areas TENERIFE’S leading tourist areas will be spruced up over the next two years with a 30m-euro fund from the Cabildo.
This cash injection, for regenerating the main tourist areas, will be used in the municipalities of Santiago del Teide, Adeje, Arona and Puerto de la Cruz. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso announced the investment at a press conference, alongside the mayors of Adeje, Santiago del Teide, Arona and Puerto de La Cruz: José Miguel Rodríguez
Fraga, Juan Damián Gorrín Ramos, Francisco Marcos Brito Child and respectively, along with Ashotel President Jorge Marichal, whose group will also contribute towards the improvement pot. The money will be spent on upgrading streets, beaches and other places of interest, and will complement other work that has been completed over the last seven years. From 2007 to 2013, similar projects in the same municipalities have cost nearly 64m euros, so the new funding will take the spend to close on 100m euros. In Arona, five separate projects will be carried
out, including a 4m-euro improvement to the annex parking in Avenida Rafael Puig and the plaza adjacent to City Centre. The municipal football field will be upgraded, as will the boulevard and the landscape towards the TF-1 in the vicinity of Exit 28 and Chayofa. Adeje will see upgrades to roads and streets, especially the access to Fañabe and La Caleta. Again, the budget is a cool 4m euros. The Los Tarajales beach in Los Cristianos will have the biggest budget, with 12m euros being splashed out on implementing what will be an almost new beach,
with new facilities. Alonso said: “Los Cristianos needs this improvement. The make-over of the Bay is a project the town has been waiting for a long time.” In Santiago del Teide, there will be work on Bouganvilla square, the viewpoint of Los Gigantes, the second phase of the beach and the Guíos Beach Arena first phase. The budget for these four projects is over 3m euros. Puerto de la Cruz will have an investment of 2.7million. There will be an extension of the Rue de la Hoya and other surrounding works on major roads and embankments.

It’s back to the sweet life for Tenerife’s top baker LIFE could not have been better for prominent baker Jon Bray, with two packed Croquant shops every day and C h r i s t m a s approaching fast.
And then he became embroiled in a legal dispute with Arona Council and was forced to close his expansive bakery overnight. That provided his thriving businesses in Los Cristianos with all their stock, so he had to close both bakery/ cafeteria concerns less than three weeks before Christmas. The 50-year-old from Manchester was stunned because, apart from his loss of earnings, it left him having to lay off his 14 staff but not for long! On 1st February, proud Jon will reopen his bakery Croquant 3 - at Las Chafiras, complete with new cafeteria as well. And his two shops, Croquant 1 and 2, in Calle General Franco and the Apolo Centre respectively, will be throwing open their doors again to welcome customers old and new.
“I’ve had the cafeteria/ bakery in Calle General Franco for eight years, and bought another in the Apolo Centre six years ago,” he said. “In that time, we have made many friends among the customers, including the restaurants and bars we
supply, and they have since been really supportive. “So many people have said they’ll be back as soon as we reopen, and my staff have been absolutely magnificent. They’re so loyal, and they’ve all promised to come back to work
for me once I give the word.” Jon, whose bakery is renowned throughout the south, is extremely proud that he has a reputation of being the best. But he is saddened that some people have written him off. “The
gossip-mongers have been having a field day because they were convinced I’d done a runner with all the money when they saw both shops closed,” he said. “But nothing could be further from the truth, and it was very upsetting. Why on earth
would I do a bunk with two excellent businesses? “My licences for both cafeterias are completely up to date and, once the new bakery is open, I’ll be trading again. “I’ve got a super new bakery being built in the new premises, on the San Miguel road just up from the main roundabout, past the El Kilo shop on the right-hand side. “And although it has been a somewhat traumatic time, I’m English and we don’t give up easily. “I was down but not out, and now I have a really exciting venture to look forward to. “And I can’t wait to get cracking again - and not just to prove the doubters wrong. My staff were on the dole all through Christmas and the New Year, and not one of them complained, even though some have families. “They’ve been loyal to me, and I will repay that loyalty.” With 220 varieties of bread in his shops, and an excellent array of pastries and cakes, complete with five bakers and three cake decorators itching to get cracking again, things really are looking up for baker Jon.
Growers given major windfall THE Canarian Government has given the local producers a major shot in the arm.
It has given the goahead for 73 million euros to be ploughed into the industry. The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Water has allocated the money to help the growers of bananas and tomatoes, and those involved in honey production. The biggest winner is the banana sector, which will receive a mammoth 70 million euros in aid. Some 2.25m has
been allotted for tomato growers and over 500,000 million for honey producers who promote the Black Bee honey. Twenty-one beneficiaries and 24 applicants will share the “tomato cash”, while there will be 981 beneficiaries, grouped in 20 beekeeping associations. The number of farmers to benefit from the “banana money” is over 7,000, which is organised through six separate associations throughout the Archipelago. The news follows hot on the heels of the Ministry’s announcement last week that nearly 20 million euros will be spent on the agricultural and livestock sector.

Volcano awareness scores hit the target TENERIFE Cabildo’s Volcano Awareness Campaign has been another hit, and last week its annual awards were dished out.
The Volcano Council gave special awards to the municipalities of: Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife), Tazacorte (La Palma), La Frontera (El Hierro), Hermigua (La Gomera), San Bartolome de Tirajana (Gran Canaria), Yaiza (Lanzarote) and Pajara (Fuerteventura). And with nearly 18,000
people taking part in the educational Risk and Prevention programme, the regions were all honoured for their large participation numbers. The annual event was chaired by Cabildo President Carlos Alonso. The board comprised
Ricardo Melchior, former Cabildo chief and President of the Tenerife Institute Volcano Involcan; Juan Manuel Santana, Canaries’ Director General of Security and Emergency; Spanish Volcanological Society representative Eff-Darwich
Antonio; Spanish Oceanography Institute’s Demetrio de Armas and Nemesio Perez, Involcan Scientific Co-ordinator, Perez said: “The more informed the society is, the better we are prepared against the volcanic risk.”
And Melchior added: “the need to reduce the level of risk is paramount.” Juan Manuel Santana urged municipalities which have not participated in the programme to do so, saying: “It’s very important that
they support this project because we live in a volcanic area.” Cabildo chief Alonso praised Pérez for “his work and involvement in this educational programme”, adding: “His scientific knowledge is invaluable. The work Nemesio does is vital. He is an asset to our Island.” This latest initiative and education programme was presented in all 88 municipalities of the Canary Islands, but was embraced stronger in some. The event began in 2008 during the International Year of Plant Earth.
Rivero gets his point across to King Juan PAULINO RIVERO, President of the Canarian Government, was delighted with his meeting with King Juan Carlos on Tuesday.
He told a press conference afterwards: “The affairs of the Archipelago are very much on the agenda of the Royal House.” Rivero met the King in the Zarzuela Palace and they addressed issues such as the reform of the Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF) of the Canaries and the connectivity of the Islands to the mainland in
an economical, political and social sense. Rivero felt over the last two years that the Canary Islands had been subjected to a “political isolation by the central Spanish Government”. He has aired these views to the King, and also two weeks ago to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. And he believes that progress has been made “We talked about moments of particular difficulty, such as the economic crisis through the Archipelago, where the problems are accrued for our geographical remoteness. “The King noted this, and he had a great willingness to address is-
sues related to the Archipelago.” Rivero also said that he felt he had made progress on “the need to reaffirm the historical rights of Canarians”. He felt the King understood his concerns over “the loss of competitiveness of the aviation and maritime transport in out own areas.” In view of the “territorial issues” in Catalonia and, taking into account the economic and social aspects of the Canary Islands and geographical remoteness, plus the high unemployment rate, Rivero said: “We are challenged by a judgment of the Constitutional Court. “Of course, we have had a series of agreements with the central government, but we have to make sure that the government is paying attention to Canary concerns. “The Canaries do not want any special privileges, but if the Rajoy government makes decisions that keep hurting us, and generate problems, my responsibility is to be alert and raise my feelings of disaffection.” Rivero said he used his meeting with Rajoy to emphasise the harmony between his Executive and that of Rajoy’s.
He added: “I reiterated my appreciation for willingness and desire to reaffirm my under-
standing with the State Government. It’s time to talk rather than hide behind political differ-
ences.” The two presidents will meet again, ahead of the 2015 State Budget.

Only Fools’ Trigger has died ACTOR Roger Lloyd-Pack, famous to millions as Trigger in Only Fools and Horses, has died aged 69.
He had been battling pancreatic cancer and passed away on Wednesday night. Roger was the son of Hammer horror actor Charles LloydPack and the father of actress Emily Lloyd. Roger was a familiar face on TV, playing Owen in The Vicar Of Dibley and Tom from The Old Guys. He also starred in numerous plays, but he will always be remembered as the loveable road-sweeper from Peckham. Del Boy, actor David Jason, paid tribute say-
“If it’s a girl, they’re gonna name it Sigourney, after the actress. And if it’s a boy, they’re gonna name him Rodney, after Dave.” Trigger: “What you up to Dave?” Rodney: “I’m listening to Mozart’s Concerto No.5 in D-Minor.” Trigger: “No words to this song, Dave?” Rodney: “No Trigger,
ing: “I was very saddened to hear of Roger’s passing. He was a very quiet, kind and unassuming actor who was a pleasure to work with. “Although he played the simple soul of Trigger in Only Fools, he was a very intelligent man and a very fine actor, capable of many roles. “I shall remember him with fondness and for all the good times we had together.” John Challis, best known as car-dealer Boycie in Only Fools, said: “I spoke to Roger two days ago. It is very sad and very distressing. My thoughts are with his family. He was a remarkable man and he’ll be missed. Roger is irreplaceable. It’s a very sorry day.”
Classic Trigger lines: it’s an instrumental.” Del Boy: “All right Trigger? What you doing?” Trigger: “I’m listening to Mozart’s Concerto No.5 in D-Minor.” Del Boy: “Okay.” Trigger: “It’s the karaoke version.” Del: “It’s closed!”
Trigger (checks watch): “Well, it’s a bit late, innit?” Del: “What d’you mean, ‘a bit late?’ You said it was open 24 hours a day. Trigger: “ Yeah, but not at night!” Del: “Never give up on people, Rodney. I know
that most of the time they don’t seem to understand. But when you’re in trouble and you cry out for help, some will always be there. Trigger’s cousin Cyril’s a perfect example. He owed 500 quid on his mortgage.” Trigger: “They were
gonna be thrown out on the street the following day. He was very worried about it.” Mike: “So what happened Trig?” Trigger: “He drove out to Beachy Head. Parked about five foot from the edge of the cliff.” Albert: “What, he was gonna drive off it?” Trigger: “Yeah! He just sat there for a couple of
hours, his head resting on the steering wheel. People tried to talk to him out of it but he was too depressed to listen.” Del: “But then, and this is what I mean about people, Rodney, they had a whip-round and got him his 500 quid.” Rodney: No! “Who held the whip-round?” Del: “All the passengers on the bus.”
Canarians get less cash WORKERS in the Canary Islands have long suspected that they are underpaid and a new report backs up their claims.
A six-year survey by ICSA and EADA business school found that they are paid less than in the rest of Spain. Canarian middle-managers and general employees saw a decline of around 3% in their pay packet compared with 2012. But higher-end
managers and directors enjoyed an increase of around 7% compared with the previous 12 months. These results from the study of 2007-2013 in Wage Developments were surprising. The Business School collected salary data fro more than 80,000 employees employed throughout Spain. Ernesto Poveda, ICSA Group President said: “The depth of the economic crisis and lack of jobs have created a stalemate in the salaries of employees. Normally, improved
wages for higher management can be indicative of the long-awaited recovery. But while their salaries are higher, it’s not what we expected to see. “It’s normally generalworker wages which rise first, and what we are now witnessing is a reverse process in which managers first notice the improvements.” Poveda, who believes the recession is still biting hard, added: “The middle-classes and workers are increasingly finding it hard to get growth in their salaries.”

Stars in our eyes, and there’s more THE great thing about doing this job is that no two days are ever the same.
And just when you think you have everything planned out, something comes along and it’s back to the start - without going to jail or collecting 200 quid. I had the pleasure of watching and meeting the Everton football lads this week. Players are a strange breed. Everyone is different and I don’t envy the manager. He has to get success on the field while trying to please everyone off it. Everton are no different from any other big club in that they have a mix of many nationalities. Some were easier to spot than others. The Scottish lads swore the most, while the Dutch were a little more laidback. But they were all solid professionals and a credit to the club. They posed for every picture, signed every autograph, and I lost count of how many kids fussed over. You only hear the bad news these days, so it’s nice to tell you how superb they were. And they were not the only team at 3T, because Slavia Prague were training there as well. It’s the time of the year when clubs skip away from the wet and the cold, and there are plenty of other sides booked in over the next
few months - including a top-four English side in March. All this activity is great for Tenerife, as is the number of famous people who always seem to be here. Regular visitors such as Daniel O’Donnell and Ron Atkinson are here all the time, and it seems as though Joe Longthorne has the Tenerife bug. He is back for a third batch of dates this weekend. His gig at Showtime on Friday is sold out and an extra date has been added for Sunday. If you are a fan of live music and enjoy a real night out, then I urge you to take this chance to see Joe. Over the years it has always amazed me when residents moan about what they miss out on in the UK. Well here is one of the country’s top entertainers, right on your doorstep. So go and see him. Dear Editor, We totally agree with Don Riggs (issue 835) about the caravans and campers adjacent to Costa Mar Los Cristianos. It is a disgrace. But as far as we can tell, the land is private and the owner is happy to have them there. We must assume that he is charging them, so perhaps it is the Hacienda/Tax Authorities which should be made aware. But it seems there is little the council can or, perhaps, want to do. Communidad El Rincon Club tomorrow night (Saturday). Spiritual medium Ian D’montfort and hospital radio DJ Ivan Brackenbury have performed here before and believe me, they are excellent. The residents’ price is just 10 euros and it’s the bargain of the year. The success of these nights breeds more successful nights! Support what is happening in your community and back the guys who worked hard to give you something a little differ-
ent. The booking number is 669 622 622 and I hope to see you over the weekend. Before I end, I must say thank-you to Bill, aka the Old Golfer, for his help this week. His photography is top drawer and I reckon he enjoyed snapping football for the first time. Finally, I saw this photo on Twitter and have spent days trying to work out what the sales angle is! It’s a funny world. Keep smiling!
Dear Editor, I feel compelled to write to you about an article in a past Canarian Weekly paper. On my last visit to Tenerife, I was in Las Galletas and picked up a copy from a nearby office. I settled down to read it while waited for my other half to finish shopping. I was particularly intrigued by your front-page article about a message in a bottle arriving on the beach at Golf del Sur, where we have a property. The main reason for my interest is that, sadly, we lost a daughter last year at the relatively tender age of 49, and her mother and I get some comfort in anything that reminds of us of her life. And we frequently see something such as her favourite flowers, or music or phrases that awaken memories. Anyway, to cut a long story short, this article referred to a message in a bottle that was immersed in the seas around Bermuda to obtain information on the ocean currents. And Bermuda was a significant influence on our daughter’s life as she worked there for some time, met her husband there and was, subsequently, married here in the presence of her family. I was particularly struck by the fact that the message arrived at a point where Julie had stayed with us in the past. And I resolved to point out yet another coincidence of “Julie is communicating with us”, to her mother. What compounded the matter was the fact that the date of the article was 5th July. We had arrived on 30th August and actually picked up the paper on 2nd September. That caused me to remark that not only had Julie sent us a message, but she had even arranged to have the last copy of that issue available to us. So thank you for printing the article in the first place. It gave us food for thought and a measure of comfort. Barry Phelps, Golf del Sur

Lidl’s bitter-sweet move for children! LIDL, the giant German discount retailer now featuring prominently in Tenerife, has removed all chocolate and sweets from its supermarket check-out queues. The move will surely be welcomed by consumer groups and parents alike, in the face of growing concerns about increasing childhood obesity. The company has stores at Las Chafiras and Adeje in the South, and a further two up North, and is proving extremely popular. Lidl has been consulting its customers for several months and the scheme is in response to their preferences. Parents say they are up against “pester power” by their kids at the till while queuing to pay their bill. The National Obesity Forum says Britain is in danger of surpassing predictions of a 2007 report, which estimated that 50% of the nation would be obese by 2050.
Canarian flights are looking up CANARIAN airports recorded 32.5 million passengers in 2013, which was down 1% from the previous year.
Lidl’s action is almost certain to put additional pressure on rival supermarket chains to combat the young sweet-eaters more positively. All major UK supermarkets are committed to removing artificial “trans fats” from their products. But a Which? report in December 2012 said that while Sainsbury’s and Tesco had banned sweets from their supermarket check-outs, the policy did not apply to their smaller convenience stores. Asda, Iceland and Morrisons have all “lim-
ited” the sale of sugary treats near check-outs, but they do not plan to impose a Lidl-type blanket ban. But as yet, Waitrose does not have any policy in place on sweets at the check-out. Last year, Lidl UK increased the number of “healthy tills” in British stores to 1,200. The tills replaced “treats” like chocolate with products of a higher nutritional value, such as multivitamin juice and fresh fruit to promote fresh fruit and veg to customers.
Official figures released by Spanish airport operators AENA show that international passengers were just a shade over 21 million and, encouragingly, this was a rise of 4.4% (883,622) compared with 2012. It was the biggest yearon-year rise in Spanish history and places Tenerife South airport, Gran
Canaria and Lanzarote in sixth, seventh and eighth place in terms of the volume of international passengers annually at all Spanish airports. Tenerife South handled 7,880,683 passengers, Gran Canaria 5,977,173 and Lanzarote and healthy 3,712,606. Fuerteventura’s airport welcomed 3,303,094 international passengers, La Palma 212,081 and Tenerife North 55,530. Of the 21 million passengers, 19 million were travelling from within the European Union. The slump in the total number of passengers
is a direct result of the ongoing economic crisis in Spain. Instead of flying to the Islands more and more, families stayed on the mainland, where it is cheaper. Winter flights have fallen off a cliff, but there are signs that bookings from Spain will be higher this year. Iberia has recently announced that it is laying on more flights to and from the mainland in July and through the summer months. Meanwhile, it was a good festive period for the Canaries because nearly three million passengers passed through the Islands’ airports in December. This was an increase of 9.2% over the same period last year, placing Tenerife and Gran Canaria third and fourth on the grid of international passengers in Spain.

Primark opens next month THE waiting is nearly over, and February 27th will be circled in many diaries as Primark finally opens its doors in Santa Cruz.
The Irish clothing giant is currently in the hiring process and the final touches are being made in-store, which will be in the old C&A shop in CC Meridiano. For the last two weeks, Primark has been advertising a plethora of staffing positions, and those shortlisted will congregate at the store tomorrow ahead of the final selection process. It has been a long, drawn-out affair, but the cheap-as-chips fashion chain store, which has taken the UK, Spain and the rest of Europe by storm, is heading for Tenerife. There have been rumours for years about the store opening in Santa Cruz, and some media outlets incorrectly announced the
store would be open in time for Christmas. The @PrimarkTenerife Twitter account has been teasing shoppers recently with stories about the offers they will have in store, and a sneak preview of some of the new clothing ranges. Primark has been one of the success stories
of the Millennium. At one time, the stores in Britain were regarded as places frequented by the less-well-off. Now, just like Poundland, even the wealthy are not averse to sifting through the bargain buys. The company has even had an outlet on Oxford Street for the past five
years and, needless to say, that is also proving to be immensely popular. Such is the success of the chain store, which now has 238 outlets all over Europe, that it always posts an annual profit, despite these austere times. Primark opened its first store in June 1969
in Mary Street, Dublin, and spread rapidly all over the British Isles. In May 2006, the company launched in Spain, in Plenilunio, Madrid, and then opened another in Murcia a few months later. The following year saw the introduction of Primark to Jerez and a second store in Madrid,
and the phenomenal expansion continued with seven more Spanish stores the following year. Since then, the mainland growth has continued non-stop. A Primark spokesperson said: “We are now a well-respected, international brand with a global supply chain, and we take our responsibility seriously to act ethically. “The group is committed to providing the best possible value for customers, but not at the expense of the people who make the products.” From the first Penneys store in Ireland to the latest flagship store in Edinburgh, the Primark story has been one of continuing success, founded on a unique combination of fast fashion and lean operations. Its popular, if hilarious, “Primani” nickname is derived from combining top fashion brand Armani with low-cost Primark to make an ironic word.

Tram system’s rattling a bit AIR BERLIN has announced an increase in the number of summer flights to the Canaries.
The airline will be making 73 connections in and out of the archipelago every week - a 12% rise. The number of weekly flights to Lanzarote will go up by three to
13, Air Berlin will fly 16 times a week to Gran Canaria, while and Tenerife South will have 25 flights a week. Fuerteventura gets an extra service, pushing them up to 18 flights. For the first time, this summer, the airline will also have weekly flights to from Dusseldorf to Madrid as the airline steps up its Spanish presence.
THE Santa Cruz tram system has suffered its first serious setback with a drop in passengers.
There were 700,000 fewer customers in 2013 compared with 2012, when there was also a decline. Yet since its 2007 launch, the tram had seen a steady increase in passenger numbers year-on-year. The 2012 drop was put down to a blip, but
there is now no doubt that the financial crisis is still hitting hard. Higher unemployment and less cash in people’s pockets are being put down as the reason for the decrease, but the fare increase which started six months ago must surely be a factor. The inflation-busting 10% increase was well advertised, and its impact is being felt. Last year, 12.5 million people used the tram - a figure well below
the number politicians hoped to see. The tram is seen as the long-term solution to the city centre congestion problem, which is why the figures are so worrying. That said, passenger numbers did recover slightly in September and October, according to data supplied by Metropolitano de Tenerife, which manages the light rail service. This positive nugget has caught the eye of Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, who
said: “When you look at the data, they have recovered around 300,000 users (in September and October) with respect to the initial estimates. “It looked as though the figure would be around 12.1 million passengers, so it’s positive to end 2013 on 12.5 million.” Alonso is hoping the trend will continue throughout 2014, especially as there will be price cuts for the mostfrequent users until the end of February.

We’re not squids in after monster catch
AN enormous squid, weighing 360lbs, has been landed by a crew of Japanese fishermen - by accident” Shigenori Goto and his men were on the hunt for yellowtail fish. But they had the shock their lives when the squid ap-
peared in the freezing seas of northern Japan. “We were about 30-40 minutes into our day when we saw this huge, reddish-brown thing come swimming up from the depths,” said the 44-year-old skipper. “I’d never seen anything like it before, and it was complete chaos on the boat. We all started shouting, ‘giant squid, giant squid’.”
The male squid, which died soon after being pulled to the surface, lost its lengthy tentacles during the catch. Experts say it was probably about 26ft (8 metres) long overall, since the tentacles are generally equal to the rest of the body’s length. The largest ever caught measured some 18 metres (60 feet)
from the top of its head to tentacle tip. The skipper, upset that the squid was not in perfect condition when caught, added: “I wish we’d been able to make the squid more presentable, but there are no fishing techniques for catching giant squid. “I had no idea it was going to become such a big deal, or I’d have
tried to treat it a bit more gently.” But the thought of chopping it up to be sold for food never occurred to Mr Goto, even though squid, raw or cooked, is a popular Japanese dish. “It was a seriously big squid,” he said. “Any smaller and we might have thought about eating it, but there was this really bad ammo-
nia smell. I don’t think it would have made for good food.” The mysterious giant squid are said to have inspired the myth of the huge “kraken” - a legendary sea monster - and make the odd appearances near the Japanese archipelago. As for this monster, it was taken away for tests at a nearby research centre.

Woody’s volley from Mia and son
Oil search gets the green light
WOODY ALLEN’S Lifetime Achievement award at the Golden Globes did not go down well with former girlfriend Mia Farrow and their son, Ronan.
As tributes to the film director started - he was not at the Beverly Hills ceremony in California - the actress, who had been tweeting throughout the show, stopped and said on the microblogging site: “Time to grab some ice cream & switch over to #GIRLS.” Ronan was more explicit, saying on Twitter: “Missed the Woody Allen tribute - did they put the part where a woman publicly confirmed he molested her at age 7 before or after Annie Hall?” His message was believed to be referring
to Allen and Farrow’s adopted daughter, Dylan. The court case was eventually dropped and Allen’s spokesman denied the allegations. Farrow also retweeted her son’s message and they both retweeted messages that referred to a Vanity Fair article in which Dylan stood by the allegations.
“I’m scared of him (Allen), his image,” she told a journalist. “I have never been asked to testify. If I could talk to the seven-year-old Dylan, I would tell her to be brave, to testify.” Farrow and Allen had a 12-year relationship but split in 1992 when she discovered he was having an affair with her adopted daughter from

SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has told Canary Islands president Paulino Rivero that exploration work on oil reserves in the Canaries will soon begin.
A deal has been struck between the Government and oil giant Repsol to survey the waters off Lanzarote and Fuerteventura – a project which will be-
gin between July and September. The official green light came just days after Industry, Energy and Tourism minister José Manuel Soria hinted that the controversial project was about to start. Rivero and Rajoy discussed the issue at length when they met in Gran Canaria in November. However environment groups and some politicians remain fiercely opposed to the drilling, and court action looks likely.

Business begins to boom!
THERE is good news on the local business front as new figures reveal more green shoots of recovery.
Official figures show that there were 3,425 new companies created in the Canary Islands in 2013 - a rise of nearly 10% compared with 2012. Nationally, there were 93,781 new businesses last year, which represents an increase of 5.65% compared with 2012, but 12.6% lower than in 2008. Madrid, Catalonia, Andalusia and Valen-
cia saw the largest number of new companies. But again, this is still 4% fewer than the 2013 combined figure, against the 2008 stats. Meanwhile, the number of bankruptcy proceedings has slowed significantly. Although 2013 ended with a judicial record of 8,823 insolvencies - an increase of 17.9% compared with 2012 - December’s figures fell for the second consecutive month. In the second half of 2013, the rate was up just 4.55% against the same 2012 period - in comparison with a rise of 31% for the first six months of the year.

The extra wonga for defaulting on a loan CASH borrowers who default on their loans may be paying illegallyhigh fines to their payday lenders.
After uncovering penalties of up to £30, Consumer magazine Which? accused lenders of “exploiting” borrowers and said they could push their customers into a debt spiral. The warning was made at a time when consumers are most likely to be facing finan-
cial pressure. January is, by tradition, a tough month, with many people struggling to pay for Christmas and deal with a six-week gap between pay-days. Which? studied the default fees of 17 lenders and found that Wonga, one of Britain’s most high-profile payday firms (who sponsor Newcastle United), were tops with a £30 charge. Ten companies had default fees of £20 or more, and four charged £25 and above. Legally, says Which,
excessive default fees are unlawful under the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999. These state that it is unfair for lenders to charge a disproportionately high fee if borrowers fall behind. Wonga stressed that its £30, one-off, late-repayment fee s reflected “the additional costs we incur in collecting these loans”. It also said the sum had been assessed independently by a business advisory service. The company’s state-
ment said: “As with all our costs, we are completely transparent about our default fee and it’s clear to customers when they apply for a loan, and at least three further times before their repayment date. “On the rare occasions where people can’t repay, we always encourage them to get in touch with us so we can do everything we can to agree an affordable repayment plan, including freezing interest and charges.” But Which? claimed payday lenders were using excessive penalties to reduce their headline rates and lead customers to underestimate the true cost of a loan. The Financial Conduct Authority takes over regulation of the payday lending market from April. And it is already considering default fees as part of its work on capping the total cost of credit.

Perfection as Everton P R E M I E R League highflyers Everton have been in Tenerife this week, enjoying some warmweather training at 3T in La Caleta.
All the first-team squad, plus a couple of their promising youngsters, travelled over after their 2-0 win over Norwich.
Everton were here a couple of years ago when David Moyes was in charge, and the club has a long history with the Island. They first visited in 1934 when their legendary striker, Dixie Dean, was among the squad, and they even played a couple of friendly games. There was no time to do that this week, however, as they prepared for Monday’s match with West Brom.
New signing Aiden McGeady got to know his new team-mates, while injured England player Ross Barkley also made the trip. Canarian Weekly caught up with manager Roberto Martinez after training on Tuesday. “It’s not the first I have been to Tenerife,” he said. “I came here with Wigan last season and it was just what we were after. “The facilities are excellent and enable us to
do what we need to do with the players. This time we had a few options. “We thought about going overseas, maybe to the Middle East, but here is just perfect. It’s the same time – it’s a short flight - and the weather is what we are after. We have the great climate, the food but, most importantly, the weather.” The Everton boss added: “This was really the only gap we had in

the calendar and we are here until Thursday (yesterday). “We wanted to get some warm-training into the players and this was the only time
we could do that as we have the match with West Brom on Monday. “The training is important and, of course, getting away helps with the
team morale and bonding. But everything here is as good as it gets. The whole club, the whole set-up and the players are as good as you can get. The Chair-
man has been great and we have a good relationship, which enables us to come and do things like this. “The players get the benefit more than the
coaches and again it’s the weather that is the biggest help. “I am absolutely enjoying being at Everton, because it is such a great club. Everything is
set up properly and we have some great players. “And I have all the backing from the chairman - and things are going really well.”

The Ferguson Files
By Joe Ferguson
OSCAR nominees have been announced as you will see on page 37.
The front runners include Gravity, 12 Years a Slave and The Wolf of Wall Street. I’ve seen the first and the last. Not to be biased as a Sandra Bullock fan, but Gravity is a movie that needs to be honoured - The Wolf not so much. I have a huge beef with The Oscars because it’s possibly, outside of Conservative politics, the biggest show of snobbery in our so-called “classless” world. I love movies, always have. As a little boy, I would sit with my mum, before the video recorder was available in homes, and watch the afternoon movie on BBC2. Even at such a young age I knew that the Cleopatra and Western movies were of a grander scale than anything I had seen at the local picture house. I honestly don’t think I have missed seeing a blockbuster movie in the last 40 years. And that’s why I can see the snobbery that goes on with the Oscars. The blockbusters, the big movies that make

the most money, or anything that normal people like us would actually pay to see, never seem to win. Okay, Titanic made billions and came away with a basketful of awards. But that was back in 1998. So let’s look at a few that made a lot of money in 2013 and which, in my opinion, the “Academy Judges” seemed to look down their nose at. Bad Grandpa - what a fantastic, hiddencamera comedy movie. It features a guy made up to look like an older gent, trying to get his eight-year-old grandson back to his father. Everybody loves pranks so, in the same vein, look at the popularity of Candid Cam-
era, which was adored by millions worldwide. There’s no real story to the 90-minute film. A load of pranks are secretly filmed and we get see what the public reaction is like. I was in tears of laughter watching this. And so were the millions who
APPLE is my hero of the week after I learned that the company will refund customers at least £19.9m after a settlement with the US Federal Trade Commission. The refund agreement settles long-standing complaints over in-app purchases made by children without their parents’ consent. Apple will also be required to change its billing procedures to make sure customers have given consent before they are charged for in-app purchases. The company said it had settled rather than take on a “long legal fight”. My opinions on the whole Apple universe is known to those in the “Techy” world, because I believe that their closed system is just stupid, selfish and extremely arrogant. Its products are beautiful, no doubt, but after having an iPhone and then changing to an Android product, my whole world opened. But how many times have parents received a bill only to notice that their child has purchased apps simply by clicking a button? It’s happened to me. But the fact that the company has agreed to make refunds to unhappy parents gets my full respect.
have also been to see it. Profanity and a lot of sick humour - right up my street! Enough She Said is one of those comedies you’ll love. A divorced woman, who decided to pursue the man she’s in love with, learns that he’s her new friend’s exhusband. It stars Julia LouisDreyfus - you’ll know her from Seinfeld and VEEP - and the wonderful James Gandolfini, from Sopranos fame. Unfortunately, this was his last movie before he died last year. In my eyes, it was a fitting tribute to what an actor he was. Funny, touching and, with these two as the stars, it’s a mustsee. Jobs is a somewhat romantic view of Apple’s late chief, Steve Jobs. For me it was very Hol-
lywood and, as the main character lived a pretty private life, how they came up with some of the scenarios is beyond me. But on is own, it was great. And the biggest factor for no nomination as best movie can be said in two words: Ashton Kutcher. He’s now one of the biggest TV stars in the world, thanks to Two And A Half Men, and that’s the problem: movie people don’t like TV people. Iron Man 3. Let’s face it, no movie is going to get an Oscar with number 2 in its name, so why should they bother with a 3? But it’s a super-hero movie - two hours of brilliance and the best Iron Man movie to date. These are just a few of last year’s movies which
made a mint because of box-office success. But success means nothing. The movies deemed worthy of a nomination, apart from the brilliant, Gravity, will go on international release the week AFTER the awards. Does that not make you think something is up? And like the fold we are, we all fall for it and end up bored with a numb backside after nearly three hours of watching rubbish we’ve been manipulated into watching. Final little thought for you: just take a look at the movies which never won an Oscar over the years, Shawshank Redemption, Taxi Driver, Vertigo, Scarface and Weekend At Bernie’s. That last one is not a joke – it’s a timeless classic!
THIS week’s villain is undoubtedly ITV. The executives must have been whacked out of their heads a few months ago when they decided to bring back the horrific show Splash for a second series. They need to be hung over a six-metre board at their local swimming pool. Watching Z-list celebs in Speedos, just as I’m sitting down for my Saturday-night tea, makes me want to throw the entire contents of my dinner tray at the telly. I watched the first show to see if they could clean up the mess from last year but they couldn’t. And the whole point is for these no-namers to learn how to dive into a swimming pool. All I’ve seen them do is fall into it. Without doubt, it would be my candidate for alltime worst TV show ever.

National Television Awards 2014 Don't Miss...
Wednesday 22 January 2014, ITV1, 19.30 The 19th National Television Awards will be broadcast LIVE from The 02 London on Wednesday 22nd January 2014. Hosted by Dermot O’Leary, the night honours television’s biggest stars in the only TV awards ceremony where all the winners are chosen by the public in a huge nationwide poll. Celebrating the viewers’ love affair with crime-based shows, the National Television Awards have introduced a brand new category, TV Detective, where the nation’s favourite detectives - Olivia Colman and David Tennant from Broadchurch, Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch, Luther’s Idris Elba, Law & Order UK’s Bradley Walsh and Scott & Bailey’s Suranne Jones - battle it out to become the first to win this special award. Last year Strictly Come Dancing upset The X Factor’s dominance of the Talent Show category, but can they do the double and take the prize again? Dancing On Ice, Britain’s Got Talent and The Voice UK complete the strong line-up. 2013 saw The Great British Bake Off find the right recipe, with record-breaking BBC2 viewing figures. The hugely popular cooking show faces tough competition from last year’s winner Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs, Top Gear and An Idiot Abroad to scoop the Factual Entertainment trophy. Downton Abbey, which carried off the silverware in last year’s Drama category, faces a strong challenge from the gripping crime thriller Broadchurch, period drama Call The Midwife and the hugely popular Doctor Who fresh from its 50th year celebrations. In a strong year for documentaries, Educating Yorkshire warmed hearts across the country with feel-good real-life stories, such as Musharaf Asghar who overcame his stammer with the help of his English teacher and a technique used by King George V. Inside Death Row with Trevor McDonald, Paul O’Grady’s Working Britain and Penguins - Spy in the Huddle complete the line-up. The Serial Drama category is set to be one of the most hotly contested of the evening as the contenders and long-standing rivals Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks battle to reign supreme. The Entertainment Presenter category sees NTA host Dermot O’Leary up against Ant & Dec who in 2014 notch up their 25th year in television and will be hoping to pick up their thirteenth consecutive Entertainment Presenter trophy. But Dermot and fellow nominees Keith Lemon, Alan Carr and Graham Norton have all made trips to the winner’s podium at previous NTAs too and will be looking to end the Geordie duo’s record-breaking run.

To prove it is a genuine Vuillard, the team will need to convince some of the most demanding art experts in France. In Geneva, Philip and conservationist Aviva Burnstock compare Keith’s picture with a huge Vuillard work called Le Grand Teddy, while Fiona picks up the provenance trail in France and Holland, unearthing tantalising clues about the picture’s past. Once the team has marshalled all their evidence, they seek the approval of the Wildenstein Institute in Paris - the body who notoriously rejected a highly credible Monet in the first ever episode of Fake or Fortune. Based upon the life of flamboyant American entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge, who founded the world renowned store on London’s Oxford Street in 1909, the second series picks up the story in 1914 as the store celebrates its 5th anniversary of trading. Harry, played by Emmy award‐winning American actor, Jeremy Piven (Entourage), is proud of the store’s success but there is no time to rest on his laurels. With rumours rife with talk of war in Europe, he prepares staff for challenging times ahead. The store must play its own part in the war effort and help keep morale high on the home front. Now more than ever Harry needs his wife, Rose, played by Frances O’Connor (AI: Artificial Intelligence, Piccadilly Jim), by his side. But in the last five years, they have become increasingly estranged. Whilst Rose has been spending long periods in America with the couple’s daughters and their son Gordon attends school in Winchester, Harry lives the life of a single man in London.

In this comedy from executive producer Chuck Lorre (Two And A Half Men), Anna Faris stars as Christy, a waitress at a posh Napa Valley establishment who is four months clean and doing her best to be a good mom and overcome a history of questionable choices. Her sobriety is tested when her recovering alcoholic mom, Bonnie, played by Emmy winner Allison Janney, reappears chock-full of passive-aggressive insights into Christy’s many mistakes. Bonnie joins Christy’s already complicated circle of relationships: her handsome, married boss (and lover) Gabriel (series star Nate Corddry); the restaurant’s hot-tempered chef, Rudy (series star French Stewart); her pretty, 16-going-on-25-year-old daughter, Violet (series star Sadie Calvano); her sweet but overly honest son, Roscoe (series star Blake Garrett Rosenthal); her irresponsible ex and Roscoe’s father, Baxter (series star Matt Jones); and Violet’s clueless boyfriend, Luke (series star Spencer Daniels). Christy tries to remain positive as she pursues her new path in life, but she faces an uphill battle, surrounded by a dubious support system -- and a copious amount of dysfunction.

Reporter Alistair Jackson investigates the tactics of the country’s police firearms units. These highlytrained marksmen use lethal force to tackle serious organised crime and take illegal guns off our streets. They also have to react quickly to events such as the murder of Lee Rigby in Woolwich. But they are under intense scrutiny; the shooting of Mark Duggan in 2011 led to serious rioting, and another killing has been ruled unlawful following a public inquiry. At least two police officers are facing the possibility of being put on trial for murder. Now, for the first time, officers who have killed break their silence to speak out to Panorama. The programme has gained unique access to the unit responsible for killing Mark Duggan, and examines the controversial tactic behind these shootings that is still being used to stop suspects today.

Chris Eubank: Sports Life Stories ITV1, 22.35
“My job isn’t just to fight. A fight is a show. That’s entertainment. The world is a stage and we are all actors. Here I am.” Chris Eubank Boxer Chris Eubank talks to Gabriel Clarke about his life in sport - from growing up on the streets of Peckham to defending his world title eighteen times, taking in iconic and in one case tragic fights against Michael Watson and Nigel Benn. With contributions from friends and family including promoter Barry Hearn, son Chris Eubank Jr and boxing correspondent Colin Hart, this programme provides a close insight into what drove Chris to be a world champion boxer, an outspoken character who was at one time said to be the most hated man in his sport. As a youngster, Chris says he idolised his mother, who left London to live in New York when he was eight, and says she provided him with the tough mindset he needed growing up. At 14, he found himself living on the streets of Peckham, sleeping rough in cars: “I was never a bad boy, I was a rude boy. My mum used to call it a ‘fly by night’ - a wannabe. A Bengal Lancer. A chancer. I was born to love, only the environment was mean-spirited and it was unkind. You have to toughen up, you have to get some teeth, and if you don’t you get moved to the side and behind.” His father told him he needed to go and live with his mother in the tough South Bronx area of New York to get away from bad influences in the capital: “My father said, ‘You go and live with your mother, otherwise you’re going to end up in prison in this country.’ That’s the best thing that happened for me because I was able to get away from influence and started boxing and forging my way through the hazardous life of a fighter.” He joined the Jerome Boxing Club in the Bronx, winning early prizes before turning professional. It was his relationship with his three older brothers which he says drove him to succeed: “It is what defined me, you know, I was fighting for respect. It wasn’t money I was fighting for. I wanted them to respect me.”

W C choice Paul O’Grady’s Animal Orphans ITV1, 21.00
Animal lover Paul O’Grady travels to South Africa and Zambia to meet animals that have been orphaned in the wild in this new factual series. He encounters lions, cheetahs, hippos, elephants, baboons and rhinos, amongst others, who are being hand-reared by humans. Most of the animals he meets have ended up as orphans because of humans, either their parents have been killed by poachers or their natural habitat has been destroyed or encroached upon. Paul gets hands-on helping to care for and rehabilitate the animals and of course makes some new friends along the way. In episode two, Paul meets cheetah cubs, a rhino calf, baby baboons and spends more time at the Lilayi Elephant Nursery. First, Paul visits Cheetah Outreach, a sanctuary near Cape Town where he learns more about their work to protect Africa’s most endangered wildcats.

The Great Interior Design Challenge BBC2, 19:00
Architectural historian Tom Dyckhoff presents the series searching for untapped interior design talent, judged by interior designers Sophie Robinson and Daniel Hopwood. This time the amateurs are taking on very unusual and rather beautiful homes in Beckenham, Kent. Built in the 1930s, these homes are classic art deco design - blocky, bright white with a touch of Hollywood glamour. The amateurs are asked to redesign sun rooms at the very top of the houses. Surrounded by glass, they create a unique challenge for the designers. Executive assistant Louise hopes her 1930s cocktail bar will do the trick, while student Charmaine wants to win with her office design. Artist Amy is going all out with her Miami beach theme but with the homeowners being happy with the design being a crucial part of the criterion for winning, will she be able to convince them that gold and purple are the colours to go for?

Entertainment
By Jamie Drew ENTERTAINMENT is an essential requirement in most bars here in Tenerife, and it can come in a number of forms.
Whether it be a nightly bumper quiz, a resident singer, group, band or the ever-present Karaoke, entertainment is a medium for holding people’s attention. The entertainer is the person responsible for delivering that medium. However, the owner of the venue is responsible for hiring the most suitable artistes for his or her audience. And when they get it right, it is a recipe for success.
Lazy Daze of wine and roses!
THE Loasby family relocated to Tenerife around 12 years ago. Mick and Lorraine, together with their daughter, Danni, took over a bar in Torviscas as new owners and called it Lazy Daze. Very quickly they built up custom, installed a Karaoke system and began their journey. But after almost two years, it was apparent

Finding the right formula that the bar was simply not big enough to accommodate all the return customers the Loasbys were creating. After a brief search, Lazy Daze relocated to Parque de la Paz, where they again had a successful time attracting new customers, as well as retaining the old guard from the Torviscas bar. Mick and his family spent nine years on this busy strip before deciding to upgrade again to bigger premises, with a view to opening a kitchen and offering food as well as an entertainment programme. That dream was realised around 18 months ago and the third
chapter in the life of Lazy Daze began. There is a magic about this bar and, as far as a friendly and welcoming atmosphere goes, nobody does it better than this family. Whatever time you arrive at the bar, even if it’s in full swing, Lorraine or Danni will al-
ways greet you with a beautiful smile. That’s not to say that Mick wouldn’t do the same, because he’ll do it from the stage as he also acts as the bar’s compere. He loves to sing, and also prides himself on putting on some fine artistes. Peter Taylor Young, an amazing performer with a history in entertainment that all professionals should respect, can be seen on Wednesday evenings. KEEPING IT LIVE THERE is an abundance of live music fans on the Island, and lots of venues with musicians playing each evening.
However, afternoon gigs are becoming more popular, with Leonardos the latest venue to try something new. Every Monday afternoon Leos presents a jam session, inviting musicians to come along, join in and play, sing and enjoy an afternoon entertaining the masses. Lee Rutter and David J Cocker, aka Didi, are the two guys behind this venture and it has proved extremely successful.
Each week, the audiences get bigger as word starts to get around. This format is still in the early stages of development. But if the first few outings are anything to go by, then it will go from strength to strength. All musicians love a jam, and all are encouraged to get up on the stage and perform solo, or as a part of the DidiRutter combo. Monday afternoons at Leonardos should definitely be on your “to do” list if you want see a showcase of some of the Island’s hugely-talented musicians enjoying themselves while entertaining and mixing with like-minded people.

Monday evening sees an artiste who has worked with Lazy Daze for over a decade and is also one of the best tribute acts here. Yes, Adam Saint will always please with his Rod Stewart Show. Mick has recently taken on an entertainer for Thursday nights who is relatively new to the scene. Lee Rutter is an acoustic, vocal instrumentalist who is already proving popular in the bar. And if you enjoy genuine comedy, then make sure you visit Lazy Daze on a Saturday evening, where you will ache from
laughter while watching George King, a hugelypopular comedian from Blackpool. Finally, if you want to hear a quality female voice and a personality phased by nothing, then Thursday nights are for you because Vanessa Vee performs her classy tribute to Bette Midler. Mick and his family have clearly worked hard for more than a decade - and it has paid dividends. The Lazy Daze menu is has been created by their chef Stuart, whose food alone will make you want to return to this wonderful little bar, which can be found within the group of bars just along from Hotel Noelia.
Nicky Paul – the legend returns
TENERIFE is honoured to have one of the Island’s “Hall of Fame” singers back for a short visit. Nicky Paul graced these shores for many years before returning to his home city of Salford. He was here in Tenerife and has a superb vocal range and immense power. Nicky can be seen and heard at The Soul Lodge every night for the next few weeks.
He will definitely exceed your expectations and astound you with some fabulous vocal impressions of classic voices. There are not many voices you will hear in a lifetime that can be compared with this man’s. It’s a shame he’s not back for good, so make the most of him while he’s here. Nicky is also available for one-off shows during his stay here.

Will Globe winners have Oscar double?
It’s been a big few days in the movie world with the Golden Globes being handed out and the Oscar nominations revealed.
Three films dominate this year’s 2014 Oscar nominations. American Hustle and Gravity are up for 10 awards apiece while 12 Years A Slave follows closely behind with nine nominations, including one for Best Picture. It’s a mouthwatering race between three very different films and bookies cannot decide which one will win the

Microsoft to open it’s new Windows MICROSOFT will almost certainly dump its troubled Windows 8 operating system for a new Windows 9 next year.
THE Canary Islands were one of only two regions to experience the rise of house sales in November. Year-on-year sales rose an impressive 13.5 % for that period, compared with November 2012 – an astonishing achievement when you consider the decrease of 15.9% for the whole of Spain. Statistics issued by the National Statistics
Institute (INE) details the November data, which confirmed a seventh straight month of declines in the country. The November slump is the second-lowest since January 2007, and only April 2012 was worse. According to INE data, all regions decreased the number of homes sold in November 2013 from a year earlier, ex-
cept in the Canary Islands and Navarra, which saw 9.7% growth. The “African” regions also posted impressive figures: Ceuta (which doubled it sales) and Melilla (where it increased 59.1%). By contrast, the largest slumps were in La Rioja (66.6%), Cantabria (55%), Asturias (37.1%) and Galicia (30.2%).
Informed tech blogger Paul Thurrott says the world’s biggest software-maker will confirm at its Build conference in April that a project titled “Threshold” will deliver an updated system. He believes it will be launched in about 15 months, following an update to Windows 8.1 this year, which would include phone software improvements. The American company released Windows 8.1 last October after receiving several complaints about the original Windows 8. The software ditched the familiar look of previous desktop versions of Windows in favour of a new, tiled lay-out, designed to work with touchscreen devices, such as its Surface
tablet. However, many of those using the software with a traditional mouse and keyboard found it confusing and difficult to navigate. Microsoft sold more than 100 million licences for Windows 8, but the update was planned after listening to customers’ gripes. The newer version was supposed to have made things easier for the
millions of people still spending significant time on a PC or laptop, as well as tweaking performance and visual elements. Changes included the return of the Start button, and new gesture controls for those using touchscreens. But the modifications were viewed as largely failing to address many of the core problems experienced by users.

Garden
17th January 2014 - 24th January 2014
By Margaret Tully IT’S the new year and if, like myself, you are full of good intentions regarding your health and have an interest in gardening, it is the perfect time to grow your own greens.
A few weeks ago I sowed some Garden Nasturtium, (Tropaeolum majus) and Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) seeds - and it’s not too late for you to sow them now. It is a nice idea to create a box or a basket of greens, from which you can pick off leaves throughout the next couple of months, for use as either warm or cold salads. To make: If you have a large basket or a fruit box, line it with plastic, piercing the base of the plastic with a fork to create drainage holes. At the bottom of the box or basket, pour in an inch or two of small stones or gravel. Maybe you received a gift at Christmas with polystyrene packaging. If so, break this up and layer it in the bottom of the box. This makes a lightweight alternative to stone, which is ideal if you intend to move the box around. On top of the drainage layer, put multipurpose compost, filled almost to the top. But leave maybe an inch from the top empty. You can sow your seeds directly into the box, or grow plug plants and transplant them when big enough.

Grow your own greens
I prefer this method because it is more successful. Plant in your box: *Garden Nasturtiums, near the side as they will trail over the edge. *Milk Thistle in the centre, as this grows quite tall and will last the longest. *Then all around, plant Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) plug plants. You can sow more seeds as soon as you plant out the first batch, so you will have a succession of plants
ready to fit in when gaps appear. Water well and place in soft sun, dappled shade. This will encourage the plants to settle into their new home, and will also produce rich green leaves with more nutrients. Cut leaves as they mature, but take Milk Thistle leaves while still young and they can be added to your salad. As the Lettuce plants lose their edibility, remove them and replace with new plants.
Let the Garden Nasturtiums flower so that you can enjoy eating them, as well as the leaves. If you leave some of the flowers they will form seeds, which are also edible. What a plant! The Milk Thistle flowers are lovely. They are at the top of a tall stem - an amazing palepurple, thistle-shaped flower head. Let these die back and, once dry, they will contain seeds for next season. You can even chew the odd one because they are very good for liver cleansing.
You might also throw in a few Cress (Lepidium sativum) seeds, which will grow within days. I got my supply of cress from my dear friend Tina, who, in turn, gets them from another friend. Sharing seeds is an excellent way to save money and not wasting seeds that you, perhaps, end up with having too many. As you can see from the photo, I have a raised bed planted up in the same way - and if you have the room, then go for it. While you are waiting for your seeds or your little plants to mature, why not take yourself out for a walk. At this time of year there is the amazing Canarian Sea Fennel (Astydamia canariensis). It is in abundance all around the rocky coastlines, although you should not pick in large quantities. A small bunch would not be detrimental to the plant. Also, the seeds heads are bursting, so you can always scatter a few around you to help the plant spread. Maybe you would like to take a few seeds home if you live near the coast and try to create the same habitat. This plant is edible and contains a lot of vital nutrients. But a word of caution: it also contains oxalic acid, which to be fair, do lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts and grains - even common ones such as carrots and kale. This acid is not at all
good for people with arthritic conditions or kidney-stone problems. Preserving in salt water is a better choice, again, as long as you don’t drink the liquid. This method retains more nutrients than boiling and also reduces the oxalic acid. When identifying plants in the wild, is vital that you get the names correct, so, if in any doubt, do not consume. I merely talked about this green Canarian Sea Fennel by way of opening the door to nature’s larder, containing plants which have been growing for hundreds of years. They were used as staples in the diet of those who came before us. There are lots of edible wild plants in the Canaries which I hope to talk about throughout this coming year. It is very important to me not to lose this information about native plants/herbs in the country in which we live. The modern knowledge that scientists can glean from breaking these plants down gives us all the tools to decide if a particular plant, herb, fruit or nut is good for us as individuals. Eating your greens is undoubtedly good for you, but bear in mind the motto “everything in moderation”, good or bad. Gardening can help people through depression, lose weight, gain muscle mass and lots, lots more. So go - on grow something!
SOW IT, GROW IT, TASTE IT THIS week’s recipe is to further inspire you to have a go at growing your own Garden Nasturtiums, if not any of the other plants. Poor Man’s Capers (Garden Nasturtium
Vinegar) *Pick the seeds while they are green and fresh (DO NOT use seeds that are completely dry, or from the seed packet) *Soak in water and salt
solution (brine) for an hour or so. Meanwhile… *Put some white wine vinegar into a jug and microwave it for 1 minute (or heat on the stove) *Add some cloves and
a couple of bay leaves, 1 tsp of sugar and ½ tsp of salt (making sure that the sugar and salt granules dissolve). *Leave to cool. *Strain and rinse the seeds and DRY them – it
is extremely important that you dry them *Put the seeds into a sterilised jar and pour over the cooled vinegar liquid until they are covered. Pour right to the top of the jar
*Seal the jar and label *Store in a cool, dark place for one month *Once opened, keep refrigerated. Believe me, these pickled seeds go lovely with a crispy-green salad.

By Val Sainsbury THE mystery as to why humans outlive almost all other mammals may have finally been solved.
An international team of scientists compared how much energy the average primate uses each day with the equivalent amount of energy other mammals use. The researchers discovered, somewhat surprisingly, that primates burn half the calories of similar-sized mam-

THE secret of long life
mals, and that this slow metabolism slows down the ageing process. The oldest living human, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, was a French woman called Jeanne Calmen, who lived to 122. To put this in perspective, a human - even someone with a very physically active lifestyle - would need to run a marathon each day just to approach the average daily energy expenditure of a mammal their size. The study also found that primates in zoos expend as much energy as primates in the wild, suggesting physical activity may have less of an impact on the number of calories they use than is often thought. The majority of mammals, including rats and dogs, reach adulthood within a year or two. In fact, many mammals reach sexual maturity in a matter of weeks. For example, a sixmonth-old rat is 18 in human years, while a two-year old dog is the equivalent of a human aged 18-25. In the wild, these
mammals also reproduce much more regularly than primates and many will die in their teens, if not before. By comparison, humans and our primate relatives, such as apes, monkeys, tarsiers, lorises, and lemurs, have long childhoods, reproduce infrequently, and live exceptionally long lives. This slow pace of life has baffled biologists for some time because the mechanisms behind this difference were unknown. Professor Herman Pontzer, from New York’s Hunter College, and colleagues, working with primates in zoos, sanctuaries and in the wild, examined the daily energy expenditure in 17 primate species. The researchers, using a safe and non-invasive technique known as “doubly-labelled water”, measured the number of calories burned by primates over a 10-day period. This technique tracks the body’s production of carbon dioxide, which gives an indication of how much energy they are expending.
By combining these measurements with similar data from other studies, the team were able to compare this energy output with that of other mammals. This dramatic reduction in metabolic rate accounts for their slow pace of life. All organisms need energy to grow and reproduce, and energy expenditure can also contribute to ageing. The slow rates of growth, reproduction, and ageing among pri-
mates, match their slow rate of energy expenditure, indicating that evolution has acted on metabolic rate to shape the distinctly slow lives of primates. “The results were a real surprise,” said Prof Pontzer. “Humans, chimpanzees, baboons and other primates expend only half the calories we’d expect for a mammal. “Understanding how human metabolism compares with our closest relatives will help
us understand how our bodies evolved, and how to keep them healthy.” Co-author Professor David Raichlen, from the University of Arizona, added: “The environmental conditions favouring reduced-energy expenditures may hold a key to understanding why primates, including humans, evolved this slower pace of life.” The findings have been published in the Proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences.
Cannabis-type pill could end the pain A DAILY pill, mimicking cannabis to end the agony of osteoarthritis, has moved a step closer. The debilitating and painful disease affects around eight million people in the UK, and pain experts say their “significant” and “encouraging” findings could be a breakthrough. They have discovered that a synthetically-produced chemical compound, which works like the illegal drug to relieve pain, could be developed as a potential treatment. The artificial compound could also reduce joint inflammation, according to new research at the Arthritis Research UK Pain Centre, at the University of Nottingham. It could be five to 10 years before a pill is available for patients.
But creating a drug which tackles pain over lengthy periods without side-effects would revolutionise the treatment of osteoarthritis. Professor David Walsh, director of the centre, said: “The results are quite encouraging. There is
the potential that this would be a completely new class of painkiller which would have benefits additional and different from painkillers already on the market. “For a lot of patients, the drugs we have at present are just not good enough.”
Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage at the ends of bones wears away, causing joint pain and stiffness. It is a major cause of disability. Current treatment is limited to pain relief, exercise, physiotherapy weight-loss and joint replacement. There are no drugs available to
slow down its progression. What painkillers are available, such as opiates, can have dangerous side effects or can soon stop working. But the Nottingham researchers, led by Professor Victoria Chapman, have shown that targeting a molecule involved in the body’s natural pain-sensing pathways in the spinal cord, called cannabinoid receptor2 (CB2), can also reduce osteoarthritis pain in animals. Cannabis contains a number of natural chemicals called cannabinoids, which can act as pain relievers. Their use is limited because of psychological side-effects. But the compound used in the study, called JWH133, is made in a laboratory and is not derived from
the cannabis plant. The research, published in the online journal Public Library of Science ONE, has shown that the CB2 receptor is present in humans’ spinal cord tissue. Scientists see this as evidence that the compound JWH133 may combat osteoarthritis pain in humans. Professor Alan Silman, medical director of Arthritis Research UK, said: “Millions of people are living with severe, debilitating pain, and better relief is urgently needed. “This research does not support the use of recreational cannabis use. What it does suggest is that there is potential to develop a synthetic drug that mimics the behaviour of cannabinoid receptors without serious sideeffects.”

MATURE MAGIC... By Carl from Robot
By Ruth Benson
BEING over 50 doesn’t mean that we want to see you looking that way - quite the contrary!
THE run-up to Christmas in the UK regarding retail sales is closely analysed and scrutinised.
Reaching that age is a time when a woman will still feel she wants to care about her hair, yet doesn’t want to appear as though she’s trying to be 25 again. I’m a great believer in trying to look a few years younger than you are; not to push it too much, but to look like you can still get away with it. It’s all a matter of having confidence in yourself to carry it off. And, believe me, you’ve still got it. It makes me sad sometimes to tell a new client that her hair is just too old for her. Why do some stylists give up on this age group when they can still be as creative with their hair as with the younger ones? It’s not too difficult to make-over a client who is starting to show her years through the hairstyle she is wearing. Honesty is the best policy, I say. Be truthful without hurting the client. And I’m sure that you, as a customer, appreciates this more. Wearing your hair too long after a certain age is my big No-No. It’s too scary and always adds on years rather than takes them away. Going for a shorter-tomedium length look is
always best. Soft lines and no sharp edges will frame your face and soften jaw lines. If you’re going short, then steer away from manly cuts as this will harden your face and pile on the years. If you are going for colour, then lighter is always better than trying to stay dark, even if this was your natural colour.
Golden and warmer tones will blend away white hairs, unless, of course, Mother Nature has already turned you platinum. In that case, a touch of colour will take years away without looking too false. The golden rule with mature hair is “less is more” - no back-combing, overly-bleaching, laquering or ponytails please! At 50 and upwards, softness is best. Your stylist can guide you through your new look, but be prepared to go for something you may not have tried before. Don’t get stuck with what you had 10 years ago. After all, you wouldn’t wear clothes that old. So why the same style?
And the fashion sales for 2013 have been very varied, from one retail outlet to the next. More predominantly, and not surprising, is that online sales have increased. The main fashion winner with a sales increase of 14% is Primark, which shows that the UK shopper is still driven by price rather than quality when purchasing. Among other retail fashion outlets to see an increase in sales were Next, House of Fraser, ASOS and John Lewis. But one department store badly hit was Marks and Spencer. The food department figures were up yearon-year, but fashion sales took a big hit. Part of the reason for the low sales was the late reduction in prices. Debenhams’ boss
Michael Sharp said the high street was “a sea of red” as retailers slashed prices and offered promotions in December. Other retailers started to reduce stock prices way before Christmas, and this contributed to the M&S downfall. It was the third year running that the chain’s fashion lines experienced a downfall. Shore Capital’s Clive Black, regarding Christmas sales, said: “Overall, we sense that Christmas 2013 will be ‘all right’, with some doing better than others.” He added: “This was a tough December for retailers, with priceconscious customers leaving it later than ever before to buy presents.” Christmas sales are the key time of year for stores to be analysed on their sales, and the Christmas projections also show how the economy is performing. It is said that if people are out spending money, then the economy on the whole is on the up.
From the above info, it seems that sales were “all right”, so therefore, people still have to be careful with their money - getting good value, and as much as they can for it. With that in mind, Terry, Adi and I, at London Look, have made the decision to close our shop in Parque Santiago 3. We are now based at our other shop on Amarilla Golf. We opened our Parque Santiago 3 shop to attract tourists because we already had a loyal residents’ following. Having been down in Las Americas, we have attracted more residents to shop with us. But, unfortunately, the tourism market has not been so abundant. So we are back on the Golf with plans to find another shop in a better location both for tourists, residents and ourselves. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have supported us in the past - and to all future customers, we look forward to seeing you.

Tenerife Honey given EU’s seal of approval
THE European Commission has announced that the term “Tenerife Honey” is to be a protected product phrase. The Designations of Origin (PDO) ruling means that only honey made in Tenerife can be called Tenerife Honey.
This is seen as a major boost to the Island’s popular product, and Tuesday’s decision means there are now over 1,100 food and products which have the European protection. This controversial protects geographical loca-
tions, designations of origin and traditional specialty products. The EU ruling first came into place in 1993 as a way of protecting local community output. As well as the geographical ruling, there is also an ingredients’
copyright, which means that, for example, Cumberland sausages have to be made in a certain way. The EU Protected Food Name scheme highlights regional and traditional foods, whose authenticity and origin can be guaranteed.
The product is awarded one of three marks: Protected Designation of Origin (PDO); Protected Geographical Indication (PGI); and Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG). Most manufacturers of foods intended for hu-
man consumption can apply for registration, including meat, dairy and fish products, honey, fruits and vegetables, bean, beverages made from plant extracts, bread, pasta, pastries, cakes, biscuits and confectionery.

Restaurant Davimar, Buzanada
Family affair such a treat THE Restaurant Davimar, in the heart of Buzanada, is a typical Canarian eating establishment.
It has been a family business for 30 years, and Pablo is at the helm. His sister Margarita is in the kitchen and his daughter, Carina, assists him in the barrestaurant. The Valle San Lorenzo family are open six days a week (closed Thursdays), and you will easily find them on the main Guaza-Valle San Lorenzo road, just before the Buzanada roundabout on the left. Canarian Weekly were invited to sample the specialities Pablo has to offer, and we arrived to a warm welcome. We were promptly ushered into the bar for an aperitif a bar which is popular with the locals because they can enjoy a coffee and brandy there. We were then accompanied to the restau-
rant area, which was very pleasant, with a typical Canarian look. We ordered wine and water and then sat back for a leisurely look at the mouth-watering menu.
There was so much to choose from, and we were well aware that everything would be home-made and freshly cooked by Margarita. We decided to start
with a couple of picks, including the gorgeous goats cheese made locally, and some garlic prawns in a fabulous garlic sauce - some of the best I have experienced here in Tenerife. We then had a short
break from eating and had a little chat with Pablo before checking out the main courses on offer. I’d heard that they offered a mean steak, so I chose the fillet steak (rare) in pepper sauce.
And I have to say it was tasty, with the pepper sauce not too spicy and just the way I like it. We had decided to share meals, so my colleague chose chicken Cordon Bleu and, like the steak, it had all the trimmings. We both enjoyed trying both main courses and together with the chicken dish, we dined in excellence. Of course, we couldn’t resist trying some of their home-made cream caramel, which again was delicious. That was the point when we simply couldn’t eat any more, so we had another chat with Pablo before we could even consider the drive home on such a full stomach. Accion del Sol news
Lucky 13 for some inmates! LAST year saw over 500 dogs of all shapes and sizes coming into the refuge.
Many struck lucky and found loving homes, while others still wait patiently for their turn to be rehomed. In this week alone, 13 lucky dogs have travelled to Germany to start their new lives. But every day, it seems, dogs still arrive at the refuge after being dumped on our streets. So our work continues with your help and support, which we greatly appreciate. Accion del Sol’s revised opening times, from 1st February, are as follows: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 2-5pm; Saturdays, 1-4pm. Saturdays are aimed at children especially, with organised activities, but adults are welcome to join in. The first activity, on 1st February, will be to learn dog agility. You are wel-
come to bring your own dog or you can borrow a dog from the refuge - a welcome treat for them! Accion del Sol always needs towels, sheets and blankets for the dogs, especially after the recent bad weather. So if you have any to spare, then please bring them to the ref-
uge, or contact us on the number below for collection. We have many kind, generous and loyal supporters, all helping in their own special ways. One such lady is Mary, who has been busy knitting some gorgeous soft toys for us to sell at the refuge to raise funds
Live Arico News
Lucy sees the light! LUCY, who is almost a year old, has had a bad start in life. Perhaps you remember the blind pups? Their eyes dried out and ulcerated when they were very young. But following our “never give up” ethos,
we found an animal ophthalmologist and fund-raised enough money to cure them. Lucy was the worst of the trio, with only 5% vision at her worst time. Unfortunately, she walked through the embers of a fire, unable
to see the danger, and has lost two toes on one foot. Her eyes are now good, however, and despite everything she has been through, she is an absolute sweetie. Her foster carers can’t keep her any longer so we really need to find a home where she will receive the love she deserves. Please can you consider Lucy? If so, call Sue on 629 388102. Remember the oldies Please consider taking care of an old dog. Abandoning any dog is unforgivable, but to dump an elderly pet is a heartbreaking crime. We normally charge an adoption fee of 110140 euros for younger, healthy dogs, but we can be far more flexible with the over-10s and can even offer ongoing vet care. Please contact us if you can help and would like to explore the possibility further.
for the dogs. Mary is in need of spare wool and cushions, or soft padding to fill the toys with. So if you have any to spare, it would be much appreciated. A big thank-you to Mary for helping the refuge dogs. And if there are any doll lovers who would like to purchase
one of these lovely toys and help a dog or two, then do visit the refuge. Please call 922 778 630 for more information, or if you would like to help out in any way
The refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ITER ecological park, where the windmills are.

Genesis plays sweet music
By Jav BRITISH Hyundai’s dealers will be rubbing their hands with glee about the 2015 Genesis being offered with righthand drive.
The new-look machine was unveiled at the current Detroit Motor Show, and those traders will be begin taking orders in the middle of this year – albeit in limited numbers. The car has been modernised, and there are mechanical and technological advances over the outgoing model. The first-generation Hyundai Genesis was introduced to the US in 2008, and the Korean saloon mirrored executive cars like the BMW 5-series. Yet featured pricing in line with the compact executive class. The Genesis looked pretty good on paper, but it failed to emulate the cohesive styling and chassis dynamics of the German competition and didn’t offer allwheel drive - so important for the American market. Hyundai call the design of the new Genesis Flu-
idic Sculpture 2. This is the second phase of the design language first introduced in 2009 on the Sonata saloon - the US version of the i40. The Korean company claim this evolution “encapsulates the modern Hyundai look, and a premium ambience”. Whatever, this Genesis is at least closer to carrying a style of its own instead of what previously resembled a random collection of design ele-
ments pinched from the competition. Inside, special attention has been paid to simplify controls, increase storage area functionality, and give buyers “ultra-precise” fit and finish. And the level of equipment and technology really is fantastic. Advanced smartphone apps offer Google Glass (a type of wearable computer). It can message owners
advising the use of the remote engine-starting feature, based upon scenarios such as outside temperature and their commuting schedule. A premium navigation system is also available, while a 720p high-definition screen and the climate control system utilises a CO2 sensor for increased air quality and driver safety. The engine set-up is similar to the outgoing Genesis. The base 3.8-li-
tre V6 engine develops 311bhp and 293lb ft of torque. It is available with either rear drive or the new “HTRAC” allwheel drive system. The 5.0-litre V8 puts out 420bhp and sends its power solely to the rear wheels. Both engines feature direct injection and are hitched to Hyundai’s in-house, 8-speed automatic. There is no diesel option. The styling and tech-
nology improvements, combined with optional all-wheel drive, should increase the reach of the new Genesis in the US dramatically. But the lack of a diesel will limit its Europe appeal, although offering both the steering wheel on the right. Official imports is a step in the right direction, and is also a big opportunity for Hyundai to move upmarket in the EU.
JLR are worldwide smash hits LAST year’s global sales recorded by Jaguar Land Rover went through the roof, setting records in 38 international markets.
The iconic brands Britain’s largest car manufacturer sold 425,006 vehicles, which was an increase of 19% on the previous year. The company were helped enormously by a boom in the rapidlygrowing developing economies of India and China, as well as Germany. Jaguar sales were up 15% and Land Rover’s 13% in Britain alone.
And Land Rover proved a worldwide smash, representing the largest share of sales (15%) with 348,383 units sold. In addition, demand for the luxury Jaguar has grown rapidly over the last 12 months, almost doubling its international sales to 76,668.
The sparkling sales run-down came a few days after JLR launched the first phase of a recruitment drive to take on employees at their new engine manufacturing centre. Some 600 jobs will be created over the next four years at the firm’s
West Midlands site near Wolverhampton. The company, whose main base is in Coventry, are investing more than £500m in the centre, where low-emission engines will be built. They also have design and manufacturing plants in Merseyside
and Warwickshire, and they are supporting more than 190,000 UK jobs through the supply chain, dealer network and “wider economy”. Dr Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) chief executive, said proudly: “It was a very positive year for us, thanks to
continuing strong demand for vehicles across the range. “Our unrelenting focus on design, technology, innovation and quality has seen Jaguar Land Rover reach global consumers in more markets than ever before. “That’s thanks to the most desirable product line-up, enriched further in 2013 by the Jaguar F-TYPE and all-new Range Rover Sport.” The latest sales figures represent a huge turn-around for the company. They were taken over by Indian firm Tata Motors in 2008, after they put the begging bowl out to Government for bail-out funds during the economic crisis.

CD Tenerife 0 Sporting Gijon 0 BEARING in mind this was a goal-less match, there were so many talking points afterwards.
Sporting are the best side I’ve seen this season and, on this form, they are certainties for promotion. I wrote last week about their potent Serbian strike force and it’s to Tenerife’s credit that they managed to keep a clean sheet and steal a point. Oh, and the fact that Sporting left their scoring boots in Gijon. Lekic, in particular, resembled the old cartoon favourite Billy Dane - the young lad who was an average footballer until he put on his old Grandad’s boots. Bingo! He never failed to hit the back of the net. Well, Lekic brought Emile Heskey’s old size 9s to Santa Cruz last Sunday. Don’t get me wrong. Sporting didn’t batter Position

Tenerife get lucky point Tenerife and the hosts were not flattered. In fact, CDT had the better of the first half. They created the better chances only for Ayoze to have his first poor game. It’s going to happen and it’s a surprise that it has taken so long. At some stage, sides will know how to stop him and on Sunday, that is what happened. Bernardo is an excellent centre-back at this level, and the Colombian was too wise for Ayoze. He was a stride ahead of the youngster and physically too big. And on the rare occasions that Ayoze did get a chance, and play Luismi Loro in the hole behind, only he he was wasteful. There was one such knows. Sporting could leave their wingers up. Chance after chance went begging for Sporting, and there was always the possibility that Tenerife would nick one. That is until the 76th minute. There are some awful refs in Spanish football, but Medie Jimenez is not one of them. The Catalan whistler and his assistants were strong all afternoon. The home fans had been giving them the traditional “welcome” all day, especially after they correctly gave the visitors some tight offside decisions. Fourteen minutes from time, Lekic broke after a Tenerife corner and Bruno pulled him down lazily just outside the box. It was the easiest yellow you have ever seen. Not that the crowd saw it that way, of course. Their anger made its way on to the field and the Tenerife players lost their heads. Do you know, in nearly 40 years I have never, EVER seen a ref change his mind after a player argued with him. Not ONCE. In parks’ football, at school, Premier League, European Cup, World Cup or FA Cup Singles. Never. Which may come as a surprise to the Tenerife lads as they seem to
think it’s the norm. Bruno booked. “NO!” was the collective cry. Cue, six men surround the ref. “Shut up or you are getting booked” goes the ref. “Blah, blah, blah, bunny waffle,” is the reply. Bosh! Yellow card for Suso. “No! He’s the captain,” go the players. “Shut up or you are getting booked” says the ref. “Blah, blah, blah, bunny waffle,” is the reply. Bosh! Yellow card for Sanz. “No! No!” go the players... You get my drift? I wanted to go over to them, slap them with a wet fish and tell them to grow up. Meanwhile, Sporting have three players looking at the free-kick. And they are smirking at the Tenerife lads, who have all lost their heads. As have the fans. 60 seconds later the poor ref is trying to get the wall back 10 yards … and he’s trying, and trying and trying. Just when the yellow card is about to come out, the players miraculously retreat. Funny that. The whistle blows, Llorente breaks ranks, runs to the ball and stops the shot. The Sporting players look at the ref, he reaches for his pocket and shows a yellow card to Bruno! And that’s the cue for
round two of pandemonium. Out comes the red and Bruno just stands there. The crowd go nuts. The ref has sent off the wrong player. Two more minutes elapse before Bruno departs. Now. Yes, the ref cautioned the wrong man. But if he’d booked Llorente, he would have been sent off! It’s not as though Llorente, who was busy hiding, went over the the ref, put his hand up, and asked the ref to send him off. No. Let’s harass the ref, who has made an honest error rather than Llorente, who is cheating by saying nothing. By the time Bruno had left and the free-kick taken, five minutes had elapsed (which was never added on at the end) and Tenerife were mentally gone. Sporting threw everything and the kitchen sink at Tenerife, but the ball just wouldn’t go in. Point gained? Yes. Lesson learned? Fat chance! Canarian Weekly ratings CD Tenerife: Roberto 6, Moyano 6, Ruiz 7, Bruno 6, Llorente 6, Sanz 7, Ricardo 7 (Rivero 74min 5), Suso 7 (Alberto 83min), Martin 6 ( Loro 64min 6). Aridane 7, Ayoze 5. Finally this week, by the time you have read this, keeper and club captain Sergio Aragoneses should be a Recreativo player (pictured). He owes us nothing and deserves our thanks for his commitment, courage and performances. It’s a shame he didn’t get a Nino or Cristostyle send-off. But his place in CDT hearts is assured.

The Playboys are playing up! THERE was no doubting the shock result of the week in the Oasis Fm Darts League.
It came at Ourplace Playboys as they came from 3-0 down to record an excellent 5-3 win over high-flying Phoenix Bar. The win, just their second this season, included a maximum from new-boy Frank. The drugs tests proved negative. Second played 5th at Palms Sports Bar, and
Target Army simply had no answer to a superb performance from the home side. High check-outs from Mark and Tom were backed up by a 180 from Daniel. Another whitewash took place at Scruffy

Macs as visiting Vikings Ensecan earned all eight points, and La Caña Pirates put six past Target Titans. In Division 1, Marco struck his first 180 for Rood during his side’s narrow victory over Summerland, while a
6-2 win for Gaffers B against the Bytes put them in good stead for this week’s crunch match with Emerald Lounge. But the green team will be disappointed to have lost a bit of ground after being held to a draw at Amistad 1. Good news for Chipeque Pool Bar: they actually played a match - and won it, too! Their 6-2 home success against Naughty Nautas included a maximum from Bryn. Both Bar 180 teams in this section recorded wins. The C string put
Marilyns to the sword, and the B side took the trebles to overcome Trap Door. No joy at all for Division 2’s Bar 180 D. They were soundly walloped and departed Tenerife Sun with a big fat zero! Second-placed Emerald Shamrocks keep plugging away, and who knows, they might still do it. They play Tenerife Sun in a few weeks but for now, they can be content with a solid 6-2 result over Amistad 2. The third-place spot is also being keenly contested and La Caña
Lancers, with a game in hand, will be quietly confident. But their run-in looks tricky, with two visits to Tenerife Sun coming up. Anyhow, their 6-2 win over local rivals The Rebels keeps them just ahead of Picasso’s, who were pegged back to draw with Pas O Nadas. Sundowners trip to Barracuda Hunters proved fruitful because they came away with a six-point haul, while Phoenix Flights matched that result at home to the Playgirls.

Fantasy Football League As we are in the January transfer window, I wonder how many of the Oasis Fm Fantasy League managers are tinkering with their teams? I suspect quite a few given the amount of injuries and suspensions that keep being picked up, and there will be one or two waiting to see if any big transfers occur that they can fit into their line ups.
As for point scoring, it is still Luis Suarez who is leading the line for many teams and as long as he keeps scoring so do they. Still out in front at the top of the league is Steve Schofield but he dropped a few points this week with Jeff Hall and his ‘Summerland Saints’ cutting the gap at the top to just 72 points that may seem like a lot but in Fantasy
Football that can easily be made up. Team of the week goes to ‘Over Land & Sea’, managed by Paul Tregent, who scored 81 points, he has a certain Mr Suarez as his captain but he will be please to see Daniel Sturridge return to action, as he scored and topped his points tally up nicely. Down at the bottom, the bookies would al-
ready be paying out on the wooden spoon winner, with Per Kersoe’s ‘Mostly Vikings’ having been there for most of the season. He decided to go with a team mostly made up of Scandinavian players, but this gamble just hasn’t worked, with his team only managing 5 points this week! But as they say it’s not the winning, it’s the taking part...

Palms B shock former Cup winners The TPT Cup 1st round normally provides a fair few shocks and there were a couple of upsets on Tuesday. Palms A have had an up and down season in division one, but they fancied their chances against their stable mates Palms B. The banter had been flowing since the draw was made. Palms B have had a great run as they charged up the division two table and they were fast starters against the former cup holders. They were 3-1, then 4-2 up as the A team struggled to peg them back. Inspired by Graham and Guv’nur Shai, Palms B always had their noses in front. They deserved the 7-5 win and it’s no consolation that the A team now get to defend the TPT Plate. Cup holders Phoenix Knights were considered outsiders when they pitched up at the Patch to face bang in form Inn The Pink A. With everything in Pink’s favour it was a fine 7-5 win for the Knights and maybe
this will kick start their season. Toscales A haven’t won a match in division one all season, but their is nothing wrong with their cup form! They needed a 13th frame to win at The Peacocks. Maybe the hosts were still licking their wounds after Leeds 6-0 debacle at Sheff Weds! And their B team won as well. It’s been a hard few week for Toscales B, but they were smiling after beating 2JZs. Tenerife Hammers C avenged their cup exit last year at the hands of Bluebell B while Gaffers B won the sudden death frame to get past Treehouse B. League leaders Tenerife Hammers A were in a real battle at 3-3 with La Cana A before their class saw them home, aided by Sergio losing all 3 frames. Next Door, Inn The Pink B, James Place, Dreamers A and Exiles A are all in the draw for round 2 as are the Suicide Squad of Terrace A. Their 11-1 win was tainted only by

Fears for F1 Legend Reports in Germany suggest that Michael Schumacher may be in a coma for the rest of his natural life.
‘Focus’ a German news magazine and respected newspaper ‘Bild’ are reporting similar stories. They have spoken with brain specialists and they report that his condition is so severe grave that as things stand there are no plans to wake him from his coma. The motoring legend has been in
an induced state of unconsciousness for nearly three weeks. There has been no word from his management recently. The medical team which is treating him in France has also maintained a silence. The ski accident on December 29 stunned the sporting world and fans awaited news of a recovery which has so far not happened. The 44 year old has not recovered anywhere near enough for him to be awoken from his coma. This has fueled speculation, which his management team have done little to play
down, that he may never recover. “There may have been complications’ neurosurgeon Andreas Zieger of the University Clinic for neurosurgery in Oldenburg told Focus magazine. “We should not speculate here. Ultimately, we are talking about life and death. A coma can in theory be maintained for a lifetime. It won’t hurt the human brain.” S c h u m a c h e r ’ s wife Corinna and two children are maintaining a bedside vigil and they have requested privacy from the world’s media.

The Premier League By Adi Benson FOOTBALL was once described as being “a funny old game” and it’s true, as the league demonstrates. Just six points separate 20th place from 10th place, which means there are 11 teams in the relegation battle as it stands. And the way results are going, it is anybody’s guess as to who will be in the bottom three come May. It’s close at the top as well, with no one really opening up a gap. Arsenal are still top, but I still believe it is Man City’s league to lose! Anyway let’s turn our attention to this weekend’s fixtures. Sunderland v Southampton (Saturday, 12.45pm) Sunderland will go into this game brimming with confidence after back-to-back wins, and they will want to keep the momentum going against a Southampton side in turmoil off the pitch. Sunderland could really do with some consistency from Adam Johnson, who blows hot and cold. But if he can reproduce last week’s performance, don’t bet against them. Southampton could there for the taking as their stars and manager consider their futures. Prediction: Home win West Ham v Newcastle (Saturday, 3pm) Sometimes when your backs are against the wall, just one result or one incident in a game can prove to be a pivotal point in your season. And last week, West Ham secured a muchneeded result - and welcomed back bigmoney signing Andy Carroll, who made an immediate impact with an assist for their second goal. If they can get him back to full fitness and keep him injury-free, he could just keep Big Sam in a job. Newcastle looked good against Man City and maybe deserved a draw, but the ref had other ideas. Newcastle
need to get back to winning ways and will see this game as a good opportunity to do so. Prediction: Away win Norwich v Hull (Saturday, 3pm) Norwich are in real danger of getting embroiled in the relegation battle. They just cannot seem to put a decent run together and a loss last week and a midweek defeat in an FA Cup replay will have done no good for their confidence. Hull will not be too despondent after losing to Chelsea last week. They will view this fixture as winnable and an opportunity to put more points between themselves and the bottom clubs. Prediction: Draw Man City v Cardiff (Saturday, 3pm) Welcome to the Premier League Ole Gunnar Solskjaer! His first home game in charge ended in a defeat by West Ham, which plunged Cardiff into the bottom three. And now he goes to the Etihad, where Man City have already scored 1,000 goals this season (well, it feels like it). As much as managers talk up their teams, this game for Cardiff is about damage limitation, and they must hope the teams around them drop points as well. For City, Yaya Toure is doubtful with a back injury, and Sami Nasri is also out. But they have so much strength in depth that they will not be missed.
Prediction: Home win Crystal Palace v Stoke (Saturday, 3pm) Had Jason Puncheon converted the penalty last week (the less said about that the better), the outcome against Spurs could have so different. Palace played well, but their lack of goals is costing them. Stoke, on the other hand, have confirmed the permanent signing of Stephen Ireland, and they have taken promising young forward John Guidetti on loan from Man City, giving them extra firepower. If they play as well as they did against Liverpool last Sunday, it will mean more misery for Palace fans.
Prediction: Away win Arsenal v Fulham (Saturday, 3pm) Arsenal are still top of the pile, but they are showing signs of slowing down. They got the win against Villa on Monday night, but it could have easily have been a draw. They didn’t kill the game off and sooner or later a result is going to go against them. Fulham are dangerously close to the bottom three and need to start getting results. Their ageing defence is a worry, and they will get nothing at the Emirates. Prediction: Home win Liverpool v Aston Villa (Saturday, 5.30pm) You can’t say Liverpool have not
been entertaining this season. But an eight-goal thriller last weekend against Stoke highlighted their defence frailties. If they can stop the errors and Keystone Kop defending, they should get the much-coveted fourth place this season. Aston Villa have just added more firepower in the shape of Grant Holt, a player Paul Lambert knows well, and they will be hoping he has bought his scoring boots. This game could be a great start for him. Prediction: Home win Swansea v Spurs (Sunday, 1.30pm) Swansea are struggling, and I feel the European games have taken too much out of them. And with Michu injured, they find themselves at the wrong end of the table. At home against an indifferent Spurs side, this is a good chance to get their season back on track. Tim Sherwood is certainly trying to make his mark on the squad he has at Spurs, with many names being mentioned as departures during this window, some of them signings made in the summer. Whether Chairman Daniel Levy is willing to spend money is debatable. Prediction: Home win Chelsea v Man Utd (Sunday, 4.pm) You can always bank on this fixture to provide entertainment, and Jose Mourinho is off
and running by making claims that he has the inside track on Man Utd’s transfer dealings. This is a big game for both teams, Chelsea will look to keep pace with Man City and Arsenal, so three points for them is vital. Man Utd really need a win to keep their chances of a Champions League spot alive. Should United lose and the top four all win, they will be eight points off fourth place, and that could be insurmountable. Prediction: Home win West Brom v Everton (Monday, 8pm) There is a very loose Tenerife connection to this game, West Brom are managed by Pepe Mel, one-time manager of CD Tenerife and Everton have been here on the island this week training in Adeje (told you it was loose). The other connection is, of course, Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku. Last season he was on loan at West Brom, and now he’s is on loan at Everton - and how West Brom are missing his goals. He fired them to a top-half finish last season, but without his goals, they are just three points off relegation while Everton are just a point off fourth place. And after a bit of Tenerife sunshine on his back, Lukaku would be a good shout for first goal-scorer. Prediction: Away win
