Rajoy tells Obama: The jobs market will pick up PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy, is convinced that jobs will be created in Spain and the European Union this year. And he’ll find difficulty denying his claim if his prediction doesn’t materialise because it came during a joint press conference at the White House with US President Barack Obama. The two leaders confirmed the “ m a g n i f i c e n t” relationship existing between Spain and the US, and they went on to discuss the changes taking place in the Eurozone and Spanish economies. Obama complimented Rajoy on “his sound leadership”, which has switched the course of events towards growth, deficit reduction and a return to the financial markets, enabling stability to return to the Spanish economy. A little over a year ago, said Rajoy, there were doubts over the continued existence of the Euro, financing problems in numerous EU countries, highrisk premiums and a bail-out risk in certain countries, including his own. However, he added: “The situation has now changed and talk is starting to focus on growth. And a clearer outlook is emerging in the fight against unemployment, which is unquestionably the most important issue being faced by certain European Union countries.” Rajoy also briefed President Obama on the reforms implemented in Spain over the last two years, which, he believes, have been “absolutely essential” to the economic recovery. He told him: “We are now facing the future with greater optimism in Spain.”
That’s because, after 11 months of negative growth, Spain’s economy grew by 0.1% in the third quarter last year 2013 and by 0.3% in the fourth section. But Rajoy acknowledged that many steps were still needed to complete the recovery and put Spain on a sound footing again. He admitted that unemployment was continuing to pose the greatest threat, but said the most recent data was “highly encouraging”, with fewer people on the dole at the end of 2013 (147,000) than there were on 31st December 2012. The Prime Minister stressed that he was a staunch defender of the Free Trade Treaty being negotiated between the European Union and the United States. He described it as an issue of “enormous importance” because the result would be the world’s largest, most free trade area, representing 50% of global Gross Domestic Product GDP). All in all, it proved to be an excellent day for the Prime Minister, whose enthusiasm for the task ahead was appreciated by the US President. On the second day of his official working visit to Washington, Rajoy took part in a round table discussion with representatives of the US business community. He described the transformation the Spanish economy is experiencing and its future outlook. The Prime Minister told his audience: “After two years of in-depth reforms, the Spanish economy is seeing a change of cycle. “It is one in which recovery is taking hold, and the country’s appeal as an investment target is being rekindled.” Rajoy also assured the Chamber of Commerce
members that Spain was currently enjoying its best competitiveness figures since the country joined the Euro. “Spain has been the only major Eurozone country to increase its exports,” he said proudly. “The improvement can be seen in all sectors, but especially in capital goods, vehicle production and intermediate products.” He also highlighted the improvement in the services sector; not only in tourism but also in financial and business services.
According to Rajoy, the competitiveness gained by the Spanish economy is not only the main factor behind the turnaround happening in Spain. It is also, he said: “The basis for sound and sustainable economic growth for the future. It is, in short, the cornerstone of an economy which is vibrant, healthy, and sustainable over The Prime Minister reminded his audience that the situation in Spain had changed since a year ago, arguing that there were no longer any doubts regarding the Euro.
“No one is talking about any bail-out of Spain or of any other country in the EU,” he said. “The risk premium is no longer a problem for countries’ economies - although it should improve and talk of recession is over.” He added: “After nine quarters in recession, we are now out of it and, currently, showing signs of timid growth.” In fact, figures for the last quarter of 2013, published on Monday, show growth of 0.3%. Rajoy also insisted: “2013 has been the best year in terms of unemployment figures
since the crisis started in 2008.” The Prime Minister told them that Spain’s risk premium had dropped to less than one-third of its level a year ago, enabling the country to reduce government financial expenditure by 8.7 billion euros in 2013 He also reminded the businessmen that direct foreign investment had increased by nearly 20%, and that portfolio investment had almost doubled - the most compelling evidence of the growing confidence that international markets are recovering in the Spanish economy. Rajoy said Spain would now focus on measures that will help consolidate and accelerate economic recovery. “Now we are beginning to see the first fruits of the efforts we have made, we are not going to leave the job half done,” he assured them. Today, we have a legitimate right to hope.” Finally, he gave an assurance that he would continue to strive towards strengthening even further the economic and trade ties between Spain and the US.

Spanish-Portugal talks go smoothly ANA PASTOR, Spanish Minister for Public Works, discussed infrastructure issues between Spain and Portugal with the Portuguese Economic Affairs Minister Antonio Pires in Madrid this week.
The governments reviewed the situation of the South-West Functional Airspace Block (Spain-Portugal) on which the two countries’ aviation authorities and air navigation serviceproviders work together. On the issue of improved railway links, the two leaders discussed the Lisbon-Sines-CaiaMadrid-Irun and AveiroSalamanca-Medina del Campo-Irun crossborder passenger-andfreight railway links. Both links form part of the so-called “Atlantic Corridor”, which is a priority project for European Union’s Core
Transport Network. This will be fully implemented by 2020 and with an upgrade being co-financed by the EU. The rail services infrastructure, upgrades, pricing and staffing were among the subjects discussed. The ministers welcomed the success of the international, directpassenger railway service between Vigo and Porto, which was launched last July. It has almost doubled the passengers and visitors between the cities, and, naturally, they discussed ways of increasing the frequency and service to this now-popular line. With regards to the toll systems in place on the motorway networks, the ministers reviewed the progress made at the last Summit in May. An agreement was struck, enabled Spanish, electronic-toll devices to operate successfully in Portugal and the Portuguese devices to operate without incident on the Spanish AP-9 motorway. Now, the two heads are keen to introduce full
inter-operability as soon as possible. On the issue of road transport, the two countries reviewed the Agreements on the International Bridges over the River Miño and
River Guadiana. They discussed measures to increase the competitiveness of freight haulage by road in the two countries, within the framework of the directives now
Canaries are so sexy says Rivero THIS summer will see an increase of 1.2 million airline seats available for the Canaries, compared with the 2013 figures. The main focus of recovery is, however, increasing air traffic into the mainland. Canary Islands President Paulino Rivero announced the heartening news in his blog, a day ahead of the start of the
International Tourism Fair (FITUR), which began on Tuesday. He also said the Canaries had an “enhanced” position in an enormouslycompetitive market, even going so far as to say the Canaries are a “strong and sexy” destination. An upbeat Rivero encouraged tourism industry workers to continue to work hard and make improvements to attract even more visitors, which would
create more jobs. The Canaries broke all foreign-visitor records last year, with 10.6 million people enjoying the islands - an increase of 4.85% over 2012. Rivero said the tourism industry demonstrated “tremendous strength” and could be the driving force behind the islands’ economic recovery. In closing, Rivero mentioned the diversification of the tourist market: the Russian market rose by a staggering 68% in 2013, the French by
20.4%, the Swedish by 19.6%, and Norwegian by 15.4%. These improvements have been accredited to extensive publicity campaigns in the countries concerned. The Tourism Fair opened on Tuesday at IFEMA, The Madrid International Fair Centre, and runs until Sunday (26th). It has attracted an anticipated 10,000 exhibitors from over 160 countries, and around 120,000 visitors to this huge tourism event.

Government on 10th January for the works on the final section of the A-62 Motorway “Fuentes de OñoroPortuguese Border”, connecting with the A-25 in Portugal.

At last - it’s thumbs-up for the South Hospital
THE future of the long-awaited South Hospital appears to be bright - at last!
Work on the Los Cristianos building (adjacent to the current El Mojón complex) was halted because of cuts imposed last January. And mystery surrounded the entire project. Now, however, it appears that construction is set to restart, and the day hospital and certain outpatients’ departments could be operational “by the end of the year”, according to Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso. It is understood that a total of some nine million euros has been set aside for the work, which aims to move certain key departments from their current position into the new main building.
Many departments, including A&E, o p h t h a l m o l o g y, psychiatry and even the blood extraction centre, have been operating out of prefabricated buildings there for a number of years. The project to build a hospital for the South was discussed as long as 15 years ago, but, through lack of funds, it has yet to become a reality. The idea was initially to relieve some of the pressure on the departments in the main hospitals in Santa Cruz (Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria and the University Hospital), as well as providing local access to specialists for residents in the south. Finally, last Thursday, the site management signed a new contract which will allow work to start again, which is a blessing for thousands of resident and tourists.
TITSA sagging TITSA, Tenerife’s Cabildo-run bus company, lost two million passengers last year. Despite the decline, to 34 million passengers, Manuel Ortega, Cabildo Director for Mobility, suggests the company may still post a profit when the end-of-year accounts are finalised. Either that, or a loss of around 400,000 euros could be announced! The company is being restructured, and the hope is that it will spark improvements to the services provided. Ortega also pointed out that when the Cabildo assumed control of TITSA in 2008, it had a deficit of 18m euros. Regardless of the overall decline in users, year-on-year, there was some encouraging news. Figures for last November showed an increase of 4%
compared with the same month in 2012. A general passenger upturn has been predicted, with figures indicating an increase in demand of 7.6% in the south and 3.5% in the north. But Santa Cruz is expected to be down by 1% in the capital’s Metropolitan area having revealed losses of as much as 18% in previous years. Since 2007, TITSA has lost over 15 million users, but Ortega is optimistic that the
restructuring plan, involving a number of voluntary redundancies among staff, is working; hence the recent improved figures. As 2014 progresses, a new fare structure will be put into place, to include a new discount system for frequent users - along with a change to operations in the South, and improved weekend services. It is also hoped that more tourists will be encouraged to travel by bus.

Census sparks a clash of Mayors TWO feuding Island mayors are going head to head in a furious row over so-called “irregularities” in the recent Census. Juan José Cardona, Mayor of Las Palmas, Gran Canaria is demanding an apology from Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez regarding “overinflated” population figures. The pair have been meeting in the Hotel Mencey, Santa Cruz, for a series of talks, but the war of words seems far from over; if anything,
it has increased in intensity. The argument stems from Gran Canaria’s loss of five million euros to Santa Cruz coffers, which, Cardona believes, is down to Santa Cruz supplying extra population figures. The figure, according to Cardona, is around 14,000 inhabitants, and an inquiry has been ongoing in Santa Cruz for about a year. As yet, there is no end in sight! Cardona said upon his arrival at the hotel on Monday: “We all deserve respect and he who has done wrong has responsibilities. Santa Cruz still owes us an
explanation.” The Las Palmas Mayor said that holding important talks with the census issue hanging over their heads was not conducive to creating a climate of trust, or for making progress. He even said the leaders were now “distanced” because of the problem. And when asked if the entire controversy was simply the old interisland enmity rearing its head, Cardona was quick to quash the idea. He also added that he and his Santa Cruz opposite number maintain a “great relationship and personal appreciation”.
But Bermúdez is standing firm, saying: “Me. Apologise? What for?” He went on to say that he felt Cardona was not fully on top of the situation, and that if any explanations were needed, they would be to the Town Hall and the people of Santa Cruz, not Las Palmas. Once in receipt of the full report, Bermúdez said he would have no objection to send it to his counterpart. “Whoever said they would cut ties with Santa Cruz was not me,” he maintained. “These are the words of a Stone Age Mayor, and not a modern one.”
At war: Mayors Bermúdez (left) and Cardona.
Buoyant Rajoy’s NO to regional independence! PRIME MINISTER Mariano Rajoy has given his strongest guarantee yet that the country will not be broken up. In an explosive interview on Spanish TV’s Antena 3 channel, he said: “I can assure you that no region of Spain will become independent as long as I am President of the Government.” Efforts to resolve the “Catalonia problem” have been going on for a long time, he added, and spoke of the need to “resolve the real problems of growth and unemployment”, along with plans to “strengthen the ties that unite the country within the Spanish Constitution and the law”. Fresh from his successful trip to America, Rajoy was in a tub-thumping mood. “What I can tell you now is that the law will be followed
and that a referendum aimed at questioning the sovereignty of the Spanish people will not take place.” he said. “What I can assure you right now is that, as long as I am President of the Government of Spain, I believe I can guarantee this for the future as well - no region of Spain will become independent.” As for Spain’s economic situation, he assured viewers that positive news was already starting to emerge, specifically referring to inflation. “We had a rate of inflation at 0.3% in December that we have almost never seen before,” he stressed. “Also, until recently, we were paying for Spanish debt at 7.3%, but now that figure has dropped to 3.6%.” Rajoy said it represented a saving of some 8.9 billion euros - “money that can obviously be used now to help people in other areas”.
Of unemployment, he was also upbeat, saying: “Although not good enough, a trend is now apparent that suggests we can be optimistic as we look ahead to 2014 and, subsequently, 2015.” The Prime Minister added: “At this halfway point in my term, this legislature, I am in a position to tell the people of Spain that the worst is behind us. “I am aware of the problems, the difficulties and the sacrifices. But they will soon be able to see that those efforts will produce positive results.” “2012 in Spain was a year in which we had to focus on overcoming the chaos and dreadful economic situation the country was in, with a financial crisis and a public debt crisis of considerable proportions. “2013 was the year in which we created
sound foundations for our economy. 2014 is the start of economic
growth and job creation, and 2015 will be the year of economic
growth consolidation, further job creation and tax decreases.”

It’s very much like Little Britain today WOULDN’T it be great to steal the DeLorean from Marty and Doc and go back in time. Where would you go and what would you like to see? I’ve always fancied checking out Tudor England. Henry the 8th is one of my favourite Kings, and I like the idea of enjoying a big feast of roasted boar with flagons of ale. Or maybe it’s back a few millennia to see how the Egyptians built those pyramids. I quite like the idea of watching England win the World Cup in 1966, or maybe a trip to the Grassy Knoll in Dallas in November 63. No. I would go back to 1992 and have a drive around Las Americas and Los Cristianos. I’d take a camera as well and document everything I see. Last week, I was leaving a supermarket with a couple of bags filled with British products. You know, the sort of things you just can’t normally get. The little things like proper wine gums, pork pies, square crisps, lamb oxo cubes and a Happy 35th Birthday card. As I walked through the exit, there was a young girl begging. She was obviously of East European extraction and there she was, with her styrofoam cup and that pathetic look that all beggars have. And then it struck me. It had finally happened. Tenerife is “Little Britain”. Not in a Matt Lucas sense, but we are Britain with the sun. We now have everything that you get “back home”. Think about it. What are we missing? We have British radio, TV, daily and local newspapers, food shops, restaurants, take-aways, cinema, pubs, bars, schooling … everything. And that is why I would go back to 1992, when we had none of that in Tenerife. Daily newspapers were 24 hours old. British radio was a few years away, as was the first shop selling all the “little things” you missed. Most of the community worked at night time, 1pm was considered an early wake-up, and the only beer was Dorada, Dorada or Dorada. No Cider. Guinness was a luxury. Sunday afternoons were spent in Puerto Colon watching Dorian strut his stuff instead of watching almost limitless football on TV. And a “classy meal” was a trip to the Chicken Shack or the butterfly steaks in Las Chafiras. In just one generation, the Island has changed beyond all recognition and because of that, it’s easy to spot those who are getting on in life from those who are struggling. Tenerife in 2014 is not about cheap beer, karaoke, pie ’n’ chips and scratchcards. Those who long for it are getting left behind in more ways than one, and while some changes are not working, most are. Now, what do we do with those beggars..?

Get that pink buzz of Spring TREES are abuzz in Santiago del Teide with the sound of honey bees going about their business.
It’s a sure sign that Spring is arriving on the Island, and around the whole area there are beautiful, old, gnarled almond trees with their smart pink jackets on. That’s because they are covered with a lovely pink blossom. But this magnificent spectacle doesn’t last long. In fact, if you want a close-up view, you should head up the mountain any time between now and the second week in February To get there, head along the coast towards Los Gigantes, and, just before you descend into the village, take the sign for Tamaino and follow the road up into the village. Turn left at the
crossroads towards Santiago del Teide and, just outside Tamaino village, you’ll start to see the almond trees, complete with blossom. This sight continues right up to and through the Santaigo del Teide village. The local council organises walks known as the Almond Blossom Walk, or Ruta del Almendra, and the first one takes place next Saturday (1st February) at a cost of five euros. The walk stretches from Santiago del Teide to Arguayo, but this can easily be done at any time on your own. Just park the car in the village of Santiago and head down the Arguayo road. But please don’t attempt this walk without water, some food, a jumper and sensible shoes - and don’t forget your camera.
Prostate cancer and diabetes screening set for next month TENERIFE Sur Lions Club is pleased to announce the latest opportunity for men to be screened for Prostate Cancer and Diabetes at the same time. If you are over 50, or having trouble with your waterworks, frequent nightly visits, difficulty in passing water, etc. you need to be checked for Prostate problems for your own peace of mind. If you are constantly thirsty or tired all the time, you need to be examined for diabetes. These are simple tests which could save your life or, at least, increase the
quality of your life. This is an opportunity not to be missed and offers beneficial factors because if these diseases are found early, they can be successfully treated. We have gained the cooperation of Excellent Medical, whose clinic is on the main road behind the clubhouse on Golf del Sur. They also have the clinic in Los Cristianos, alongside the Arona Grand Hotel. Their medical staff are giving their time and expertise for free, but the blood analysis will have to be charged. As in previous years, you can phone to make an appointment in advance, or turn up on the day
on Monday to Friday, between 8-10.30am. And please remember: have no food after midnight and drink only water. The starting date will be Monday, 3rd February, and it finishes on Friday, 28th. The specially-reduced cost arranged by the Lions as part of their ongoing community awareness campaigns is just 40 euros in total for both screenings, including a a small donation to the Lions’ charities. Please make your payment at reception before your screening. Because of the data protection laws, you will need to produce your NIE or passport before you are
given the results, normally within a couple of days. If the result is abnormal, you can discuss it with the on-site doctor. But any further treatment would need to be paid for on a private basis, or shown to your local GP. Please remember to say that you are attending as part of the Lions Screening to enable you to obtain this very reduced price. The telephone number for Excellent Medical on Golf del Sur is 922 738 247, and the Los Cristianos number is 922 798 226. All the reception staff speak English, and they are waiting to help you! Don’t miss this opportunity!

No need for happy pills if you’re in healthcare! PEOPLE in the Canaries working in education, defence, healthcare and social sciences last year were the happiest.
At least, that’s according to employment agency Adecco’s fourth annual workplace happiness study. Firefighters, teachers, journalists, pharmacists and engineers ranked among the most satisfied, with artists, footballers (and athletes in general), as well as archaeologists, at the top of the happy scale. If you’re not employed in one of those jobs, and working in the Canaries, there is evidence that suggests you are among the unhappiest of workers. Showing a fall of 1.1% in the job satisfaction rating over the previous year, the Canary Islands were at the bottom of the scale, along with workers from Murcia and the Balearics. Regardless of occupation or profession, the results indicate that almost eight out of every 10 workers (79.7%) are content with their lot. The happiest workers are employed in Navarra, Asturias, Extremadura and Basque Country, whose ratings climbed by between 6-8% against the 2012 statistics. When viewed by educational qualifications, it emerged that people with a basic education were also happy. And in the battle of the sexes, it appears that men are happier than women; 80.7% of men, as opposed to 77.2% of women expressed satisfaction in the workplace. People over 45 seem to fare better
than those in the 25-34 bracket (81.4% for over-45s, against 78.3% for the 2534 group). Under-25s and those aged between 35 and 44 hold the middle ground with a 78.5% happiness rating. According to the study, enjoying what you do is more important than having a good working environment and work colleagues. So, if you’re male over 45 and working in Navarra as a pharmacist, you should be pretty content right now!
Alonso flies tourism flag
TENERIFE Cabildo and hotel association ASHOTEL are planning to increase the number and frequency of flights to the mainland to boost tourism.
They outlined the prospects at a press conference on Monday, when Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said the possibility of creating a local airline to fulfil the agenda was also being discussed. Alonso spoke of the necessity to improve links with Madrid, followed by a similar initiative for Barcelona. Given that the number of flights is not ideal and that the price has become increasingly high, more regular services between Tenerife and Madrid, he believes, would eventually lower fares. That in turn, he said, could lead to increased demand and a boost to
tourism on the Island. Jorge Marichal, the ASHOTEL President, said the association was always looking for ways to increase connectivity, and that no avenues were closed to discussion. He added that the creation of a new airline was definitely food for thought, or, alternatively, investing in an existing one to increase services. Alonso, referring to last year’s tourism figures, pointed out that around one million visitors to Tenerife were from the mainland. His aim is to increase that figure by 50% this year. And by using the international Travel Fair, FITUR (which began on Wednesday, in Madrid) as a platform, he hopes more Spanish visitors will be encouraged to come to Tenerife. That’s why he is using the Fair to promote the new initiative, known as “Why Tenerife?”

The Queen to abdicate? Don’t bet against it yet!
BOOKMAKERS are seldom wrong, so when bets flooded in to Coral offices in the Windsor area that the Queen would step down this year, the company suspended betting.
It followed Monday’s reports that the 87-year-old monarch - Europe’s oldest ruler - would abdicate, handing over responsibilities to Prince Charles. Coral cut its odds of Her Majesty going before the end of the year from 3-1 to 1-2, before suspending the odds on Tuesday. A spokeswoman said: “A significant gamble suggests that the Queen could hand over the reins sooner rather than later. “With her 88th birthday approaching, she has started to relinquish a number of duties to Prince Charles,
leading to major speculation about the monarch’s future.” She said bets about members of the royal family placed in the Windsor area were usually “spot-on”, which means that it`s possible some insider knowledge leaked out. In recent years a few Royal betting coups have been landed in the region. These include the colour of the Queen’s hat at Ascot to the naming of a Royal baby. The Queen is scheduled to visit the Normandy beaches later this year to mark the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings, along with Prince Charles. Some claim it will be her final overseas engagement, and a French government official was reported as saying: “We have been told this will probably be the Queen’s last official foreign visit.” Royal aides have dismissed the
claims out of hand, insisting that the monarch will continue to focus on “behind-the-scenes” duties. Also, with last year’s abdication of the Queen of Holland, and the possibility of Spain’s King Juan Carlos stepping down, Europe is becoming rife with royal rumours. And Prince Philip is in his 90s, with failing health, so maybe gamblers have assessed the situation - with perhaps a little help from inside the palace - and decided the time is right for Queen Elizabeth II to put her feet up after being on the throne for what will be 62 years on 6th February. Others say that giving Prince Charles more responsibility would allow the Queen to concentrate on her role as head of state, hosting foreign ambassadors and state visits, for instance. In fact, she has already allocated some of her tasks to him, as well as to
Ray of hope for property sector THE property market was one of the hardest hit in the recession, with house prices plummeting by 35.5% since their 2007 peak. But there is a ray of light because the building industry along with other sectors, may be showing signs of recovery, according
to a new report on the 2013 new housing market. The price of new properties fell by 6.5% in the Canaries, a smaller drop than the national average of 7.8%. The report states that the price of new Santa Cruz properties fell by 9.1% (the highest fall in the Canaries). Properties in Las Palmas in Gran Canaria
remain the highest, at 1,463 euros per square metre, followed by Santa Cruz (1,289 euros per square metre). But expectations for this year indicate a slight improvement through the economic indicators which influence the housing market. As an example, Euribor (the reference used for mortgages) has declined steadily, and the Consumer
Price Index (IPC) remained stable during the last six months of 2013. The housing market has slowed down, mainly because of difficulty in securing finance to purchase. But it is hoped that foreign investment by major groups will start the upturn, as large companies are able to take on housing in large volumes.
younger members of the royal family, including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (William and Kate) in the last few months. Predictably, a Buckingham Palace spokesman declined to comment.

Teen idol Bieber on drink-drive charge TEENAGE pop idol Justin Bieber has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and drag-racing! The 19-year-old Canadian was arrested yesterday (Thursday) in Miami, Florida, after being pulled up in a rented Lamborghini after allegedly racing against a Ferrari at 4.09am. He was held in custody at the local Miami-Dade police department to have his blood alcohol level tested. Police spokesman Sgt Bobby Hernandez said that officers saw a Lamborghini and a Ferrari racing, as two other cars blocked off an area for a drag race. Bieber’s passenger was also said to have been arrested, as was the
other drag racer. The singer has been investigated by the police over the past two weeks having allegedly causing damage amounting to 20,000 dollars (£12,000) to a neighbour’s home after pelting the house with eggs. During the raid on his Los Angeles home, a member of the Bieber’s crew, Lil Za, was arrested on charges of possessing cocaine. The pop star, rumoured to have started dating his ex, Selena Gomez, again, was seen on Wednesday enjoying a Segway ride with his entourage, rolling through the streets of Miami. He also posted several videos of himself playing basketball with friends. Bieber, a musician, actor, and singer-songwriter,
was discovered in 2008 by American talent manager Scooter Braun, who saw his videos on YouTube and later became his manager. The youngster was soon picked up an Island Records recording contract and his debut EP, the seven-track My World, released in November 2009, was certified platinum in the United States. He was the first artist to have seven songs from a debut record to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. And his first full-length studio album, My World 2.0, released in March 2010, made No1 in several countries and also went platinum in the US. Since then, his popularity has grown at an astonishing rate, with a string of best-
selling singles and albums. And he now has a mind-blowing 48-million followers - known as Beliebers - on Twitter. Troublewise, Bieber can hardly put a foot right these days, but pop-wise, he is unbeatable, earning over £31 million in 2011 alone, for which he was named by Forbes magazine the following year as the third-most powerful celebrity in the world. He has sold in excess of 16 million albums and has won a hatful of awards, including Artist of the Year in 2010 and 2012 in the American Music Awards. Last month, curiously, he announced his “retirement”, only for his management to say he was “only kidding”,

Transplant
group’s record year
SPAIN’S National Transplant Organisation (ONT) is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year on a high. In 2013, it recorded an all-time record of 4,279 transplants of all types, thanks to the generosity of 1,655 donors. The organ-donor rate last year was 35.12 per one million population. These figures were presented by Spanish Secretary-General for Health Pilar Farjas at a press conference. She said: “The Spanish transplant system - a global leader for 22 consecutive years - has again demonstrated its strength with continued growth in activity, despite the backdrop of major
difficulties.” The Secretary-General for Health highlighted the extremely professional nature of the Spanish transplant network and its dedication to all patients needing a transplant. “The Spanish National Transplant Organisation is celebrating its first 25 years in existence in 2014,” she added. “And the best way to celebrate is with data which reflects a growing number of transplants in our country - and the fact that all those Spanish patients who need this type of therapy are enjoying greater access to it every year. “Spain has carried out more than 90,000 organ transplants, more than 300,000 tissue transplants and close to 50,000 transplants
from haematopoietic progenitors (bone marrow and umbilical cord blood). “Approximately half-amillion patients have benefited from the Spanish transplant system, a figure representing 1% of the entire Spanish population.” She also congratulated Spanish society as a whole, saying: “The results achieved by the ONT, the thousands and thousands of people who have benefited from every part of the Spanish transplant system, belong to Spanish society as a whole. “It has succeeded in making a joint effort and giving the best of itself for the greater good of saving or improving the quality of life of its citizens”, she said.
Unemployment goes up despite good December There are more people in the Canary Islands out of work today than this time last year. Unemployment rose 1% in 2013 despite over 22,000 jobs being jobs created in the last three months of the year. Canary unemployed climbed to 371,700 people , according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). The Labour Force Survey (LFS) showed that unemployed was reduced by over 5% in the Canaries in December compared with the summer. While this is good news,
the region ended the year with an unemployment rate of 33.18 percent of its available workforce, the second highest in the country, after Andalusia (36.32%) and seven points above the national average (26.03%). The dramatic decrease in the archipelago during the fourth quarter was a result of the best tourist season since records began. The Canaries recorded three consecutive months of over a million of tourists, which has never happened before. Of the 371,700 unemployed in the Canary Islands, 207,100 are men and 164,600 women.

British troops face
final cuts THE fourth and final round of redundancies as part of defence cuts in the British Armed Forces will see 1,500 personnel lose their jobs. Defence Secretary Philip Hammond, who says 1,425 will come from the Army, 70 from the RAF and 10 from the Royal Navy, told the Commons the
decisions were “painful”. But he stressed that Britain’s security would not be put at risk. Those serving or about to serve in Afghanistan will be exempt, while the Ghurkas face cuts. The Army is cutting its regular soldiers, from 102,000 in 2010 to 82,000 by 2017, but it is hoping to recruit reservists. The Government plans also involve trimming the Royal Navy from 35,500 regulars in
2010 to 30,000 in 2020, and the RAF from 40,130 regulars in 2010 to 35,000 in 2020. Of the 4,500 troops cut last June, 84% had applied for voluntary redundancy. Hammond added in Parliament: “Our personnel will have certainty about the future size and shape of our Armed Forces, and confidence that they will have the kit, equipment and platforms they need.” Shadow defence secretary Vernon Coaker accused the Government of “taking risks with Britain’s safety and security”. And war veteran Simon Weston said: “These cuts are having a terrible impact on recruitment.” Prime Minister David Cameron, answering critics, said Britain had the world’s fourth-largest defence budget and was a “first-class player in terms of defence”.

Joe Longthorne rocks
Tenerife
Over the years Joe Longthorne has, collectively, entertained millions of fans on stages all around the world. Most recently, in the last two years, Joe has now taken on Tenerife as a tour destination. On Friday 17th January, it was time for Showtime to play host and present one of the most versatile voices in the world. The venue filled up rather quickly and as people got settled into their seats and their glasses charged, the atmosphere remained relaxed yet bursting with anticipation. Shortly after 9pm the off stage announcement came
welcoming everybody, which was quickly followed by the introduction of the host. Leye D Johns is a seasoned pro and a natural performer. His camp humour captured everybody instantly and this was the perfect prequel to Joe’s performance. After a very short interval for a comfort break, the main event was about to begin. Leye returned to the stage and introduced the legendary Joe Longthorne. The opening song was Love Is In The Air and was followed by his signature arrangement of Mary In The Morning. Joe has the most distinct tone in his voice and is able to manipulate his voice in such a way as to impersonate well-known singers like Tom Jones,
Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jnr, Johnny Mathis - and even an uncanny take of Dame Shirley Bassey. The list of voices Joe Longthorne is able to ‘take off,’ as he calls it, is endless and he has often been referred to as the man with a thousand voices. The audiences were thrilled to be treated to a duet when Joe introduced Tracey Jordan to the stage to sing the beautiful song, You Don’t Bring Me Flowers, originally done by Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand, and it was delivered flawlessly. A fabulous night was had by all and plans are already underway to set another date for the return of Joe Longthorne to the welcoming shores of Tenerife.

Race on to crown Carnaval Queen
Sixteen young ladies are vying for the coveted 2014 Carnaval Queen title. Thousands upon thousands of people from all over the world flood into Santa Cruz, every year to witness and take part in the Tenerife Carnaval. It is, without doubt, one of the top fiestas in the world, rated second only
to the Rio de Janeiro extravaganza - a fact which led to the twinning of the two cities in 1984. The Carnaval, whose theme this year is “cartoons”, runs from the end of this month until early March. And the first event, the announcement of the Carnaval Queen candidates, will be held at the Guimerá Theatre on 31st January. For the first time the final 16 have been revealed before-
hand and, as you can see, the standard is very high. Good luck to the judges in picking a winner! Competitions for the marching, musical groups take place early next month, and the grand Carnaval Queen election will be decided on Wednesday, 26th February. The costumes, referred to as “fantasies” by many, are truly spectacular, and there will be creations from up-
and-coming designer Alexis Martín Eduardo Santana, as well as more seasoned participants, such as Daniel Pagés, Expedita Hernández, Santi Castro. Also, veteran designer Miguel Ángel Castilla will be celebrating his 44th Tenerife Carnaval, which is an astonishing achievement. Whitlock and Wade ready to lock horns
Two of the world’s best Darts players are in Tenerife for a special exhibition tonight (Friday). World number 3 Simon Whitlock and James Wade ranked number 6 will contest the EZE Cup at Showtime. Yesterday Australian Whitlock enjoyed a round of golf and told Canarian Weekly that he was delighted to be here: “I’ve been looking forward to enjoying some sun and heat. I’ve never been here before, I’ve been to Benidorm but it’s not the same! I’ve just got back from Australia where I played a few games in Melbourne. I love going back there. I’ve got my kids there and every time I go back I love seeing them. It’s been a hectic time with the world championships, and going back so coming to Tenerife for a few days will be great.” He had a decent run in the mega money World Championships a few weeks back reaching the semi finals. This sent him up to a career high position as the worlds number 3. Only World Champion Michael van Gerwen and darts legend Phil Taylor are above him. Whitlock is one of the most popular darts players despite being an Aussie! “I don’t know why the crowd love me so much. Maybe it’s just because I’m a nice guy!” He was involved in a memorable match with James Wade in the quarter finals of the 2010 world championship. The two men were friendly until recently which has added a bit of spice to Friday’s match. “I’ve not played too much since the world championships ended. I don’t think anyone has, and I’ve been a little rusty. But I’m on the practice boards and ready to go. Nobody likes to lose and I’m looking forward to going out there and winning on Friday.” said Whitlock. “Darts players are the worst losers in the world” said James Wade when we spoke with him yesterday. “And I can tell you I will be playing to win on Friday.” Wade has had an up and down 12 months since making the last 4 of the 2013 world championships. Despite this he is still ranked number 6 and
made the quarter finals of the worlds a few weeks ago. The Aldershot dartsmith nicknamed The Machine is also having his first trip: “I am a Tenerife virgin! And a typical Brit, I’m sunburnt already! It won’t affect the throwing arm though.” Whitlock and Wade’s match is not the only darts being played. They will also play against 4 players from the Oasis Fm darts league who won tournaments to have the right to face the Pros. And Wade has this advice for players: “Practice, practice, practice. It’s as simple as that. I probably don’t get on the practice board enough, and you can never practice enough.” It’s tight to call a winner on Friday but it was first blood to Wade yesterday as the Englishman’s golf team defeated Whitlock’s warriors in a challenge match at Amarilla Golf. Wade is not the biggest golfer: “I’ve had six lessons and after that final lesson the instructor tapped me on the shoulder and said I was so useless I shouldn’t bother picking up a club anymore. Thanks a lot I thought. Mind you he still owes me for four lessons I’ve already paid for!”
It was a laid back, but serious battle and Wade called up former 3 time world darts champion John Lowe to help him out. The contest included Dominic and Danny from sponsors EZE Group and Oasis Fm’s Chris Elkington who had a nightmare on the fifth hole. His tee shot landed a foot away from James Wade who was on the tee at the 6th hole! Tonight’s charity event features a full nights entertainment, 3 course meal, heads & tails, raffle, and auction and a very special surprise guest. For last minute tickets call 669 622 622

Legal bank interest:
By Mariano Zunino Siri
IN previous columns, I referred to the problem many people are facing at the time of foreclosure. Before the foreclosing procedure, there is a default period in which the bank requires the payment from the client. In some cases, the outstanding instalments are more than the three months owed. Even if you think that you owe the amount equivalent to the sum of the three instalments, your debt is much more than this. For example, suppose that monthly instalments are 450 euros and you owe for March, April, May, June, July, August and September, then the total would be 3,150 euros. However, if you think that by paying that sum brings you up to date, you are completely wrong. The bank has added “default interest” to every instalment (in many cases, abusive clauses in mortgages are more than 25%). And at the time of cancelling the debt, you could owe more than 5,000 euros. Needless to say, if you ask the bank to explain the reason for this and why the sum is so high, the bank will probably say: “You pay first and later we discuss such issues.” Unless you are a financial advisor, it is
The loop difficult to understand how the interest is calculated. Following the example outlined, the March instalment carries a default interest, which is capitalised. This interest is added to April’s instalment, which becomes 460 euros (instead of 450), and the interest on 460 euros is transferred to the May instalment … and so on. This procedure is known as “capitalisation of the interest” (the interest becomes capital) or “anatocismo”. In this way, if you think that by paying 450 euros, you have settled March instalment and now owe April-September, you are wrong. What really happens is that you have paid the interest that is outstanding. Spanish Civil Code states in article 1172: “The one that has many debts of the same kind in favour of one creditor will be able to declare at the time of paying which is the debt to be cancelled.” However, article 1173 says: “If the debt produces interest, the payment cannot be applied to the capital whilst the interests are not updated.” This way, the mortgagor is right when applying delayed payment to the default interest. What could be abusive and wrong is the interest rate applicable (as said before, more than 25% in many cases). The Law 1/2013 of
Protection of Debtors has modified many Laws, among them Mortgage Law, modifying its article 114 saying: “The default interests of loans or credits for the purchase of a family residence, secured by the mortgages on the same property, may not exceed three times the legal interest rate, and may only accrue on the principal outstanding. Such default interest can not be capitalized under any circumstances…” There are, however, exceptions to this rule. Court Number Five of Valencia has nullified a mortgage clause that fixed a default interest of 29% stated in a Mortgage Deed loan by the bank. The Court has said that this type of interest is null and void, leaving the figure at “0” (zero). Last November, Court Number Seven of Sabadell has also nullified the default interest of 16% in a mortgage proceeding. If you are involved in a critical situation with the bank, owing more than three mortgage instalments, you should discuss with your bank to negotiate a new deal (renewal of mortgage, grace period in which you only pay interests…). Take the bull by the horns and do not think that, by paying small sums, you would be cancelling the debt. The “loop” of default interest would be acting
as a snowball. Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer, registered in Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. Office in Los Cristianos at Edificio Valdes Center Torre “A”, oficina 1, piso 2º. Phone: 922 79 44 12.

The Ferguson Files
By Joe Ferguson IT’S exactly a week since I decided to quit smoking, and I’m well chuffed with myself.
Not that much time to think that I’ll be off them for good, I’ll admit. But this is the longest I’ve been off them in all the times I have tried to give up in the last year. Three days was my last record. Two times I went cold turkey without the aid of a nicotine replacement. But it was, seriously, the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Giving in to it on both occasions for me just had to be done. But this time is different. Last July the family and I were over in Tenerife for a holiday and, for a smoker who’s paying nearly £8 for a packet in the UK, going to a dutyfree island is heaven. We met up with Canarian Weekly and Oasis Fm sales manager John Zammit, and he was using something I’d never seen before. What looked like Dr Who’s sonic screwdriver was hanging from his mouth, and smoke was

When it comes to e-fags, the government’s a drag being blown out. What kind of crazy witchcraft was this? It seems so pathetic now that I had no idea it was an e-cigarette with liquid. Just sensational. You don’t know. Fill it with nicotine-enhanced liquid, charged by a battery. You switch it on and do what a smoker does. Low-nicotine intake and none of the toxic chemicals. I tried John’s and was pleasantly surprised at how much it was like smoking a real cigarette. And blowing vapour out of your mouth gives it that real sensation. So I started to give it a go myself for real and, I have to say, it’s totally working for me, who used to be on 30 a day. I don’t even want to look at another fag, and I would highly recommend using one. But, of course, with everything in my life, when I have a positive, something negative has to come along and annoy the hell out of me. For years as a smoker, I’ve put up with taxes on the cigs. Every Budget Day, we hear they are going up in price because of, in the
ANT and Dec are part of everyone’s life now, it seems. Hard to believe they’ve only been around since the Nineties. I never watched Bikers Grove, where they got their start, so I can’t comment. The first time I came across this duo was in Belfast at a Smash Hits concert when working at a local radio station. I had to interview the acts backstage. At that time, they were the pop duo PJ and Duncan. I can’t remember the interview at all, but what I do remember is thinking that this record and act will never get anywhere. I was right … for a few years. Let’s Get Ready To Rumble is now a pop classic and the boys are still boys.
words of the Government: “Initiatives for those to give up.” Knowing full well it’s simply more money in their pockets. The health agencies declare the statistics of smoking-related deaths will go down. Which, to be fair, is true. But just as I start my campaign to prolong my health, what hits me a small in the face? The Government are looking into ways of taxing the ecigarette! So let’s look at this. Yes, there have been stories that these devices have not been proved, as yet, to work 100% safely. But the fact they are so widely available proves they are certainly not killers. And I’ve spoken now to so many people who’ve quit that it can’t be a coincidence. So the Government know what they’re up to: people not smoking means people not paying. In my opinion, and I can safely say on behalf of millions, the Government have all along been talking rubbish, just as we thought. Even the tobacco companies are up in arms,
with high-profile press conferences saying how “unsafe” the ecigarette is, and that it needs proper testing. Anyone else notice the joke on there? The very people who make the one thing that kills people every day saying a nicotine replacement is “unsafe” It’s beyond belief! But obviously it’s just not the UK Government getting into this. Just this week in Brussels, (the sooner we get out of middle-aged men dictating to us what’s right and wrong, the better) a series of meetings started to discuss what could be done about the e-cig. They all must be on the take with the tobacco companies as Brussels wants a complete ban on these things. That’s right, a complete ban! If, after the meetings end with a vote and just three countries in the whole of the UK say they are banning the ecig, then that’s it for the lot of us. Everyone else will have to follow. The hypocrisy in all of this really does sound like something from the Nazi era.
I interviewed them in 2002 in Liverpool when they took part in the Soccer Six competition at Anfield. They were great, and at the after-party they had time for everyone in the club. They’ve been in our living rooms for so many years now that it’s just part of life. And on Wednesday, at the National TV Awards, a Landmark Award was bestowed on them, as well as two other gongs. And rightly so. When you look at the shows they present, Celebrity Jungle and Britain Doesn’t Really Have Any Talent, they are pretty mundane. But when Ant and Dec are holding them together, even rubbish is must-watch TV.
Let me just say that in all my time smoking, I loved every minute of it. So believe me when I say that I’m not going to turn into a “bornagain”. I will never be antismoking to anyone who wishes to light up. Everyone to his own. Unless it’s my son! But I will say is this: I didn’t start to give up smoking because I wanted to. I gave up because it was simply too expensive. So the excuse that you must want to give up
IS the mother of three-yearold Mikaeel Kular, charged with the boy’s murder in Scotland. Innocent until proved guilty, so I’ll just say this: A three-year-old boy who loves and trusts his parents, no matter what the circumstances in a household, will
is completely null and void. In all my time in Tenerife, I was never seen without a cigarette in my mouth. But these devices do work. I’m obviously not a scientist, but, from personal experience, I’d say give them a go … if you want to. After one week, I can breathe a lot better and already have a feeling of self-satisfaction. No matter what the Government and tobacco companies say, I know what they’re up to.

Kitty (Amy Beth Hayes) has the idea of holding a tango demonstration for the staff, to thank them for all their hard work. Tango’s all the rage, and Delphine’s club has some tango dancers currently in residence. Harry loves the idea, but wants to reassure the public too by having some sort of Celebration of the Empire within the store. Mr Thackeray (Cal MacAninch) devilishly suggests the Empire Celebration last a whole week, across all departments, just to put pressure on Agnes (Aisling Loftus). Lady Mae (Katherine Kelly) is escaping to the country, without Lord Loxley (Aidan McArdle). But her plans are thwarted when Loxley reveals he’s leased the country estate out. Meanwhile, Rose (Frances O’Connor) is convinced she saw Henri (Gregory Fitoussi) at the club last time she was there, and asks Delphine (Polly Walker) if she has an address for him. Rose persuades Harry to think about holding the staff tango party at Delphine’s club. After checking out Delphine’s club for himself, he agrees. Harry decides to invite Lady Mae to the tango party, and Loxley invites himself along too – much to Mae’s frustrated displeasure. Trade unionist Arnold Huxton (Iain McKee) stops by the loading bay to rustle up support. Being a member of a union is banned at Selfridge’s as they have an active staff council and many other benefits. Despite this, Ed (Jonathan Howard) and Dave (Daniel Kendrick) are still interested in the union. They arrange a secret meeting with Huxton the night of the tango party, but Harry’s son Gordon (Greg Austin) has overheard their plans… Rose visits Henri, who is living in squalor, unkempt and a far cry from the elegant Henri who left for New York four years ago. Although Rose wants Henri to make up with Harry, who needs him more than ever, Henri is disinterested and tells her to leave.

Adventurer and journalist Simon Reeve heads to Vietnam to uncover the stories behind the morning pick-meup. While we drink millions of cups of the stuff each week, how many of us know where our coffee actually comes from? The surprising answer is that it is not Brazil, Columbia or Jamaica, but Vietnam. Eighty per cent of the coffee we drink in Britain isn’t posh cappuccinos or lattes but instant coffee and Vietnam is the biggest supplier. From Hanoi in the north, Simon follows the coffee trail into the remote central highlands where he meets the people who grow, pick and pack our coffee.

W C choice The Coffee Trail With Simon Reeve BBC2, 20.00
In the second programme of a two-part series for This World looking at the global trade of tea and coffee, Simon Reeve heads to Vietnam to uncover the truth behind one of the nation’s most popular drinks. Eighty per cent of the coffee consumed in the UK is instant, with British people drinking millions of cups each week, and Vietnam is our biggest supplier. From Hanoi in the north, Simon follows the coffee trail into the remote central highlands, home to many of the minority indigenous people. Here, following the Vietnam War, the government launched a vast coffeegrowing programme to help the country’s recovery and today Vietnam is the second biggest producer in the world. Simon meets the people who grow, pick and pack our coffee. Millions of small-scale famers, each working two or three acres, produce most of the coffee beans that go into our well-known instant coffee brands. Coffee has provided employment for millions, making some very rich indeed and Simon meets Vietnam’s biggest coffee billionaire. But Simon learns that their rapid success has come at a cost both to both the local people and the environment.

Britain’s Great War BBC1, 21.00 Jeremy Paxman Launching the BBC’s biggest and most ambitious season to commemorate the World War One Centenary, Britain’s Great War, presented by Jeremy Paxman, and co-produced in partnership with The Open University, is a four-part landmark history series of how the First World War affected the lives of the British people and created what we know as modern Britain. In the first episode, Jeremy Paxman traces the story of the dramatic early stages of the war: from stunned disbelief to the mass recruitment of volunteer soldiers. Fear of invasion grips the country, Boy Scouts guard bridges and spies are suspected everywhere. For the first time, British civilians are fired on by enemy ships and bombed from the air. Jeremy meets a 105-year-old eyewitness to the shelling of Hartlepool, who describes how she thought the Germans had landed. The BBC’s centenary programming will explain why the First World War happened, commemorate and remember those involved, shine a light on what it was like to live through this cataclysmic event in world history, and interrogate and debate just what its legacy has meant for modern society.

The Bletchley Circle ITV1, 21.00 (concluding part) The girls call the police to tell them about Jaspers murder but the next morning Ben (Nick Blood) tells Lucy (Sophie Rundle) that the tip off was wrong, there was no dead body and someone got there first. Much to Lucy’s horror they all conclude there must be corruption within vice squad so they need another way to catch them and catching them red handed is the only option. The women decide to intercept the crime ring using Jean (Julie Graham) as cover, hoping to find out the location of the hotel they are working out of. They visit Marta (Brana Bajic) in her restaurant, pretending that Jean is a new potential client. This becomes an opportunity for Lucy to memorise Marta’s ledger, which may be the key to the whole operation. Once Lucy has copied down what she saw the girls realise that it’s not only in Maltese but also appears to be in machine code. The girls return to Bletchley Park. Alice’s daughter Lizzie (Faye Marsay) is now studying here part time in the teachers training college which has been established since the war. Lizzie is their way in. They find some old German Enigma machines, and with Alice’s knowledge they get them working and eventually manage to crack the code. What they have is dates, times and codenames for Marta’s shipments.

Eric Bristow: Sports Life Stories ITV1, 22.35
“Ever since I’ve been 16, 15, that’s all I’ve been doing, playing darts. Getting in cars, getting on trains, getting on planes, playing in venues, different venues. About the most I go without playing darts is about a week. Even when I go on holiday I have a practice. It’s in my blood.” - Eric Bristow Darts legend and Tenerif regular Eric Bristow talks to Gabriel Clarke about his life in sport, from winning three successive darts world titles to losing his nerve through dartitis and last year’s appearance in the celebrity jungle. With contributions from his protege, 16 times world champion Phil Taylor, darts commentator Wayne Mardle and Keith Deller, who shocked Bristow by beating him for the world title in 1983, the programme chronicles the progress of the ‘Crafty Cockney’ from hustling darts games for money as a teenager to the pinnacle of his sport. Eric says he used to challenge men to games of darts in pubs in his area of North London, which he would then go on to win. This sometimes annoyed the older men, he reveals: “I didn’t give a monkey’s then, I was a young fit lad, mate. I didn’t worry I didn’t worry about who I went up against, I never ran.

Benefits Street Channel 4, 22:00
According to some politicians and media coverage, benefits are an easy route to a life of luxury, foreign holidays and lavish homes furnished with wide screen TVs - all at the expense of hard-working taxpayers. But as austerity continues to bite, jobs remain hard to come by and benefits are squeezed, this new observational documentary series reveals the reality of life on benefits, as the residents of one of Britain’s most benefitdependent streets invite cameras into their tight-knit community. The series, from the makers of Make Bradford British and Why Don’t You Speak English?, follows residents of ‘Benefits Street’ as they navigate their way through life on the bottom rung of Britain’s economic ladder. Despite the challenges the residents face, the street also has a strong sense of community. This is a place where people look out for each other and where small acts of kindness can go a long way.

In a tiny hamlet in Colombia, six-yearold Didier has struggled with a huge burden: a rare condition called a Congenital Melanocytic Nevus: a giant mole that grew so much that it covered 40% of his body. It resembled a shell, and Didier was nicknamed Turtle Boy. There was a chance it could turn malignant. And Didier’s mother Luz struggled with an additional burden: guilt. In this superstitious society, there was a belief that Didier’s growth was a result of being conceived during an eclipse, which meant Luz and her family had to live apart from the rest of the village. Luz longed to be free to have her son baptised, to take him to school and see him grow up like any other boy.

The Victorian photographer Francis Frith spent the best part of his life documenting Britain. His aim was to photograph every city, every town and every village in the land. He and his team took tens of thousands of pictures and left us with an invaluable record of a Britain frozen in time. Now, John Sergeant is attempting to follow in Frith’s footsteps, finding out what has changed, what has stayed the same and what has gone forever: he’ll be unravelling some of the mysteries of this unique archive and he’ll be taking his own photographs.

Afternoons & coffee spoons
TENERIFE has never been known as a seasonal island, like the Balearic Islands or Majorca.
But there seems to be a definite shift towards a quieter time of year on our beloved place. However, this is not affecting all areas of Tenerife. Los Gigantes is very popular at this time of the year, yet it is more vibrant in the daytime and early evening than into the small hours. Parque de la Paz always seems to thrive, no matter what time of year it is, yet some areas are like a ghost town at night. All that’s missing is the proverbial tumbleweed, rolling along the promenades.
From an entertainment perspective, this isn’t good for evening trade. An entertainer is the highest nightly overhead for a bar owner, so it’s hardly surprising that cabaret shows and even comperes are being cancelled when the streets are empty. Bar owners know now
that things are not going to get back to how they used to be, which is why many are evolving and adapting their programme to target the audience. Some are even employing their entertainers to perform in the afternoon. Obviously, the style is completely different from an evening programme, and bars are leaning towards acoustic sets from musicians and singers, who collaborate and form duos and trios. Let’s face it, if you were walking along a promenade, looking for a nice bar to sit in and watch the afternoon go by, where would you rather be? In a bar where there is only a TV blurting out the same TV shows you
would watch at home? Or in a bar watching some quality “live” music. The Kandi Lounge, in Puerto Colon, has been putting afternoon shows on for two years, and this format has proved an enormous success for Andy and Wendy, their daughter
Kirsty and her partner Craig. Earlier this week I caught up with Shane, whose award-winning show, Mister Sister, was one of the first to start the afternoon gigs off in The Kandi Lounge. Now, two years on, Shane tells me that his Thursday afternoon show is the busiest of the week, and crowds are packing the terrace to catch this brilliant show, featuring some Fabio-lous costumes. He also adds that it’s not just his show that pulls in the afternoon audiences. Every afternoon is the same, and you can see some of the Island’s performing artistes from 4pm daily. Mind you, it’s not a “given” that this format will work in any bar, because there needs to be passing trade and, ideally, a beach-front close by. Most people flock to the beach in the daytime and, by 4pm, the guys have had enough of handbag-shopping with the wife and head to a bar for a couple of pints. People attract more people, so again I ask the question: where would you rather be? In a bar rammed with folk and one of the Island’s top entertainers? Or, on your own watching Countdown in an almost-empty bar, listening to your wife telling you how she loves her new bag and now needs new shoes to go with it?
Yes, it’s a no-brainer. I remember, a couple of years ago, reading a status update on Facebook
from Aaron Cormack, promoting his availability for afternoon and early-evening shows during the summer months. Aaron has a wealth of experience in entertainment circles throughout the world, as well as here in Tenerife.
Having run a cabaret bar, performed in duos, played as a solo vocal/ instrumentalist and also, on occasion, donned a suit to perform the songs of Michael Buble, he recognised a gap in the market early and was sure this format would work
in the afternoon. Both he and Shane agree that if you have location, passing trade and a talented entertainer to perform, you have the three ingredients for a successful afternoon entertainment programme.
MEGA ROCK IT’S going to be a busy day tomorrow (Saturday) at The Mega Rock Café in Fanabe. The whole day is dedicated to raising money for the charity Help for Heroes.
Again, the Island’s artistes have pulled together to put on another extravaganza. Dave Michaels is starting the event off at 12.30pm. He and most of the names on the bill have always supported fundraisers where they can. But the man kicking the afternoon off always seems to be above and beyond the call of duty. Resident compere Terry Ellens and manager Natalie are responsible for organising the event. And they are expecting more than a dozen acts to be performing throughout the afternoon. Other artistes booked to perform include Scott Henderson, Sonic, P Pablo, Kerry Railton, Sebastian Whittaker from Soul Train, Suzie Moore, Lisa Bridge, Vicky Denton, T2K, Pip Brown and the awardwinning show Rock DJ finishing the line-up at 8pm. This will be a true marathon event, yet this is nothing compared with the marathon the Armed Service personnel and their families go through on a daily basis when serving in an active theatre of war.
Please help support them, come along to this event and be entertained by some top artistes while also raising money for this very worthy cause. There will be lots going on as well as the acts, so be quick and buy a five-euro ticket, all of which goes to Help for Heroes. Tickets are available from Mega Bowl and also Tramps in Las Americas, who are also helping to support the event by promoting it on the other side of town. It’s going to be very busy. See you all there.

My 40Fifty Challenge for such a worthwhile and essential cause… By Richard Kirby
THE first question I get asked about the 40Fifty Challenge I’ve set myself for the year in which I reach my 50th birthday is: “Why are there 40 challenges and not fifty?”
The official answer is that I wanted to recognise how much my life has changed since I turned 40. The real reason is that I ran out of ideas! That said, I have compiled a list of pretty random tasks, some on the face of it relatively easy, others less so, but which I hope will be interesting and diverse enough to create some interest. And, ultimately, help me raise some money for the mental health charity Mind. So, while I will hopefully bowl at a county cricketer, visit a television studio, sell a picture that I’ve drawn (I can’t draw), have a photograph taken with a London 2012 medallist, have a bird of prey fly on to my hand, attempt the hottest curry on an Indian restaurant menu, shave my head, track down a classmate from my first school, play goal-shooter in a netball team, bid at an auction and hold a snake (a real one, I hasten to add) et al, I do not wish to lose sight of the charitable cause. A number of years ago I was diagnosed with a form of depression: unseen, but so horribly debilitating. I’d outwardly cope with life’s ups and downs because … well, because isn’t that what everybody does? And I’d try so hard to hide the occasional irrational thoughts, but there comes a point when it just gets too much. This is basically what happened back in
2011 and resulted in two incredibly difficult, yet significant moments. The first was to sit down in front of the team I managed at work and explain I was suffering from depression. I was “encouraged” not to do it because it was so personal, but I just had to – and, given their response to hearing me speak so openly, I’m so glad I did. The second was to post a blog about my experiences, written in the aftermath of the tragic suicide of Wales football manager Gary Speed. I didn’t want sympathy just to tell my story. The reaction from fam-
ily and friends was so positive, and I know I am incredibly lucky to be married to Elaine, whose love and support during the occasional dark times has been wonderful beyond words. In the scheme of things, I’m nobody important, but, in a sense, that’s just the point. Sufferers from mental illness in whatever form can come from any background, any walk of life: even the strongest aren’t immune. But standing up and asking for help is not a sign of weakness. In actual fact, acceptance is the first, the hardest
and the bravest step on the road that will, hopefully, lead towards recovery. I might not make much of a difference, but one thing’s for sure: if I do nothing, then I’ll make absolutely no difference at all. So over the weeks and months that follow, I’ll be doing my best to add more challenges to those I’ve already completed, which so far comprise receiving a tweet from a Spice Girl (Mel C), an appearance on a radio show, visiting my first home and finding someone born on exactly the same day as me - even though I look
at least 10 years older, which was a blow. And last, but not least, a game of 501 against an international darts player. Actually, it was several games against England’s Glenn Durrant, who recently lost out to eventual runner-up Alan Norris in the BDO World Championship. I may have lost every game, but I threw pretty well, had a great time - and Glenn has arranged for me to play him in front of 400 people at a charity exhibition in August, an event that will also feature Adrian “Jackpot” Lewis.
I’ve already decided on my entrance music: I Missed Again, by Phil Collins! So whether my adventures require some sporting ability or athletic effort, a camera, a paintbrush, an eagle, a roll (or two) of toilet paper or a large slithery reptile, you are more than welcome to follow my progress by visiting my website www.richard.kirby.org Or, if you feel like going one step further, www.justgiving. com/40Fifty. I’m incredibly grateful for any support.

LESS IS App to ease the mind MORE…
By Sue McDonald THE headline spells it out - one of those irritating sayings you need to think about!
How can less possibly be more? Well, in this case, less furniture, less fuss, and less clutter is definitely more appealing and more stylish. Your brain seeks to find order in everything you look at. So a cluttered, unco-ordinated room will not be restful, whereas one that is tidy and has everything going together will seem calmer. Since your home is the place you go when you need to relax and enjoy your spare time, it makes sense to make it as comfortable as possible. Even if you are on holiday, it is important that your surroundings are nice. And if you are renting out, a calm, uncomplicated setting will appeal to more renters. There is often a temptation to try to make a house cosy by surrounding yourself with pictures and plants, and by occupying every space with something to make it homely. In fact, one well-chosen picture or ornament is much more effective than a cluster of mismatched ones. This is not to say you shouldn’t have your personal items around you - just that you should consider your decorative scheme and
be selective with what you have on display. Or you can even dedicate a separate area for a grouping of personal photos or travel mementos in an alcove or separate area, instead of having them as the focus of a room. I am not a big fan of minimalist furnishings. That’s when there is very little furniture (obviously not great for me), and no personal effects on show. Although it is an extremely modern concept, it looks to me a bit officey - and also as though no one actually lives there! The trick is in finding the balance: having your personal effects around you so that you feel at home, but not overcrowding your living space. If you have lots of things of sentimental value, maybe think about putting some of them away, and changing them every now and again. You will be surprised that, when you make such changes, your brain will register them and “notice” the room again. This technique is also important if you are trying to sell your property. Then you should definitely remove a lot of personal effects, and leave a few
strategically-placed items. This allows potential buyers to picture themselves living in your space, rather than being distracted by all your things. Having less on display is also an opportunity to use colour more effectively, and your eye will be drawn to a bright accent colour. And if it finds another item which matches or tones, for example, a picture and a cushion, or the curtains and an ornament, this is harmonious and immediately pleasing to the eye. A common mistake with the use of colour is using too much. A few pops of colour in a room will give you that “wow” factor, but start adding too many and it becomes a bit twee. So whether you want to update your home, have bought a pre-owned property and want to change it to your own style, or maybe you are trying to sell your property, and want to make it more appealing to potential buyers, remember: less can definitely be more! Deco Nuevo now works by appointment, so if you are interested in a free, no-obligation quote, however small the job, just give us a call on the number shown.
It sounds like a gag from a Peter Kay concert but a new app could put millions of minds at rest. A new online service has been launched that enables people to check-up on elderly family members.
The ‘3rings’ app allows people to use a landline telephone to call a third-party service, which in turn sends a text message to their family to tell them that all is well. This new system will enable elderly people, who may not be technologically savvy, to send a text or email alert without having to actually type in a message. The idea takes its name from the tradition of letting the phone ring three times to tell someone that you have arrived home safe and well. In the UK over half of the popu-
lation lives more than 30 minutes away from their parents and 48 per cent admit that they currently rely on neighbours to check up on their elderly parents. Founder of 3rings Steve Purdham said: “We wanted to create a simple solution which answered the question, “are my parents okay today?”. Despite there now being more forms of communication available than ever be-
fore, the older generation are often excluded from the latest technologies. This led us to remember a time when giving someone three rings via the telephone was used to provide peace of mind.” The service can be accessed online at 3rings. co.uk while there is a free app from android. The service is a paidfor service but there is a free trial mode as well.

Just wild about
By Margaret Tully HERE in the Canaries, at the moment, there is the most amazing plant in full bloom. It is the Canary Lavender (Lavendula canariensis).
A sea of purple, whorled spikes rise high above a feather-leafed, round clump of green foliage. It is clearly identifiable as a Lavender from its appearance, but it does not have the sweet, delicate scent of the more well-known English Lavender (Lavendula angustifolia). In fact, it smells very pungent. A few of the flower heads, dried and tied in cloth or muslin, make an excellent moth repellent - and also keeps other bugs away. I feel this plant’s strength is the visual display it creates, where huge swathes of it group together to create a genuine uplifting of the spirits when you see it.
Lavender In my garden I have English Lavender and French Lavender (Lavendula dentata). English Lavender has the most beautifulscented flowers. The leaves can be used to make herbal pillows as they, too, have the beau-
tiful scent. They are soft and velvety, making a lovely stuffing, and Lavender also aids sleep and is a relaxant. English Lavender is the culinary type of lavender and can be added to tea, biscuits, sugars, cheeses and so much more. The high oil content in lavenders makes them a popular scent in perfumes and pot pourris. French Lavender has the same properties as English Lavender, but it is not for culinary use. You can identify it mainly from its leaves, as they have serrated or toothed edges; hence the name “dentata”, the Latin for toothed. It is a perfect time to take cuttings from any existing lavenders you may have, or even from a reasonablyestablished plant you buy from a garden centre. How to take cuttings: *Nip out the tops of a
few, new growing, soft shoots of foliage. Take them about five inches long, if you can *Remove all bottom leaves and any flowers *Push cuttings into a pot of compost, down between the side of the pot and the earth *Water well and let drain out of bottom of pot *Place pot in a zip-lock plastic bag and seal *Put in a light but not direct sunlit place and wait. If the bag gets too steamed up, open a little and then close again You will know when the cuttings have taken when you see either new growth or a few roots
poking out of the bottom of the pot. Take out of bag at this stage, pot each cutting into its own pot, and put back to a bright position to grow on further. Once your cuttings are strong, you can plant them outside. When your plants have flowered, cut them back
to just above the previous year’s growth. This will prevent the plant from getting too “woody”. Never cut down into the “woody” growth as it may mean the plant will not regenerate. You can clip them into balls, hedging or just let them grow as they please.
The missing ‘green’ link A PRODUCTION error last week led to a vital sentence being omitted from my explanation on the “cooking” method of how to remove oxalic acid from salad greens, vegetables, fruits & nuts that contain high levels, before consumption. So in case you were left scratching your head in puzzlement, here is the piece again: This acid is not at all good for people with arthritic conditions or kidney stone problems. However, if you boil oxalic acid containing foods and drain off the liquid, this reduces your intake but can destroy some of the other nutrients. Preserving in salt water is a better choice as long as you again, don´t drink the liquid. This method retains more nutrients than boiling and also reduces the oxalic acid. It is vital when identifying plants in the wild that you get it correct, if in any doubt, do not consume.
SOW IT, GROW IT, TASTE IT Ingredients: *8oz goat´s cheese *¼ cup of double cream *1½ tbsp honey *1 tsp dried, culinary lavender
Lavender Goat’s Cheese *¼ tsp sea salt *½ tsp ground black pepper Method
*Ground down lavender in pestle and mortar, until it has sandy texture
*Put all other ingredients into mixer or bowl and add ground lavender
*Mix until ingredients are blended together *Turn out into ramekins or small dishes and keep refrigerated
*Serve with crackers, or toasted bread and crispy salad Makes a lovely starter, or an alternative to a sweet dessert

Deadly food for thought Around 7,600 people 13 in every 100,000 - died from the disease in 2011, compared with some 3,800 in 1971 (eight in every 100,000). For men, death rates have jumped by 65% since the 1970s, say new figures published by
Sleepless nights may lead to brain damage GOING without enough sleep causes chemical changes similar to being hit on the head, which suggests that it may damage our brains. In tests, healthy young men deprived of just one night’s sleep suffered a spike in the molecules NSE and S100B, which also happens after a blow to the head. The findings in a recent study agree with previous research, which showed the brain needs sleep to cleanse itself of toxins. Professor Christian Benedict, of Sweden’s Uppsala University, said NSE and S-100B were not poisonous in themselves but were biomarkers for brain damage, such as concussion. “NSE is a neuronal enzyme and S-100B is a protein found in the cells of the central nervous system,” he said. “Typically, they rise in blood under conditions of brain damage. “We found that levels in the blood also rose in the group that went

without sleep for a night. This was not to the extent that would happen after a head injury, but it was still significant. “During sleep, the brain cleans itself of toxic substances and NSE and S-100B increase in response to these.” Prof Benedict said that lack of sleep had been linked with increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s and multiple sclerosis, and stressed that the new findings could provide further evidence. The average person now sleeps seven hours a night, compared with almost nine a few decades ago. He said the chemical spike may suggest that losing sleep could lead to a loss of brain tissue. The Professor added: “Our results indicate that a lack of sleep may promote neuro-degenerative processes. “So a good night’s sleep may be critical for maintaining brain health.”
the charity Cancer Research UK, which reveal just a 9% increase in women. The rise is linked to the growing number of people developing the disease, the UK having the highest rate of oesophageal cancer in Europe. About 6.4 out of every 100,000 people develop oesophageal cancer in the UK every year - almost double the Eu-
ropean average of 3.3, according to figures released last year. Actor John Thaw, star of television’s The Sweeney and Inspector Morse, died of the disease 12 years ago, aged 60. Cancer of the oesophagus, or gullet, affects the 10-inch tube connecting the throat to the stomach, and the risk of developing the disease increases with age.
Lifestyle factors such as obesity, smoking, and drinking alcohol can all increase the risk. It is not clear why obesity plays a part, although it is thought to increase persistent heartburn, also known as acid reflux. That’s when acid from the stomach flows back up the gullet, exposing it to possible cancercausing agents. Mr Tim Underwood,
an oesophageal surgeon and researcher for Cancer Research UK’s ICGC (The International Cancer Genome Consortium) project at the University of Southampton, said: “These figures are a clear reminder that we’ve still a long way to go with oesophageal cancer. “We must do more to diagnose the disease as early as possible.”
At last, a genuine weapon to see off painful migraine ANYONE who has ever suffered a migraine attack will know just how fearfully painful it is.
And, according to The Migraine Trust, there are approximately 190,000 attacks in the UK every day. Now, though, a new device that sends magnetic impulses to the brain could help combat the condition. And far from being another pie-in-the-sky tale, it has been recommended as a treatment by Britain’s National Institute for Health Care and Excellence (NICE).. The Institute has revealed the results of a series of clinical trials involving a portable hand-held device, which, researchers say, could “transform lives” of migraine sufferers. The device works by sending transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) - brief magnetic impulses - to the brain at the press of a button. And it has provided positive results in clinical trials. In one study of 164 migraine sufferers, the patients were treated with a single TMS via the device, for a minimum of one migraine attack. Researchers found that two hours after the onset of the migraines, 39% of patients were
free of pain. At 24 hours, 29% were pain-free, while 27% were painfree at 48 hours. Results of another study revealed that some 75% of patients, who received repetitive treatment with the device, saw their frequency of headaches decrease. And this was evident even in individuals with chronic migraine. One patient, who had suffered headaches at least every other day, notes that the device has enabled her to go up to 10 days without experiencing a headache, and she has reduced her intake of pain-killers. Based on these results, NICE has issued recommendations stating that the device may be used as a treatment option for migraine-sufferers. These recommendations come shortly after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a similar device - called the Cerena Transcranial Magnetic Simulator - for the treatment of migraines. Migraine is defined as a severe recurrent headache, which is often accompanied by sensitivity to light and nausea. There are two types of the condition: migraine with aura and migraine without aura. Migraine with aura means the condition is accompanied by visual disturbances, including blind spots, tunnel
vision and even temporary blindness. So when your pal says he’s got a “blinding headache”, this is exactly what he’s talking about. Sufferers can also experience numbness or tingling, dizziness, weakness or even vertigo. What exactly causes a migraine is unknown, but health professionals say the condition may be triggered by a series of factors, including the environment, stress, alcohol, lack of food, lack of sleep, and - in women - hormonal changes. Migraine symptoms usually last between four and 72 hours, meaning the condition may impact a person’s family, work or social lives. Researchers say the device may be useful
for patients who deem unsuitable the current treatment methods, such as pain-killers and anti-inflammatory medicines. Pregnant women fall into this category because they are advised to limit their medicinal use for migraines. Dr. Fayyaz Ahmed, a consultant Neurologist and a trustee of UK charity The Migraine Trust, has given the TMS his seal of approval. “This is a breakthrough treatment for those who cannot tolerate, or do not respond to, current treatment.” he said. “It opens the door for a new era in treating migraine headaches. “We welcome NICE guidance and very much hope this treatment is made available to those in need.”

BEING blonde isn’t easy, and keeping the colour up to the roots can be a chore.
But there are many ways to maintain your blonde colour – simple, effective ideas that can stop it looking brassy and give it that extra shine some blondes lack. Firstly, all blondes, from dark mousey to platinum, need to take extra care when shampooing and conditioning. Colouring hair blonde takes away the natural oils, which need replacing. By far the best way is with Argan oil. This soaks into the hair, leaving no residue, and seals the hair shaft, leaving only smooth, shiny, tangle-free hair. Your shampoo and conditioner should be moisturing and/or repairing. Nothing from your local supermarket for this hair type, please! A masque should be applied every week to restore damaged or fragile strands because the more you feed it, the better your hair will be. Don’t be fooled by adverts which state they perform miracles. Hair can be returned to full health in weeks or months only, and NOT after a few shampoos with the latest, gimmicky product. If your hair has a tendency to turn yellowy,
GETTING TO THE ROOT OF BLONDE PROBLEMS
the use of a “silver” shampoo will restore those ashen tones, taking away any brassiness. This needs to be used on a regular basis, and it’s also excellent for those of you with natural silver locks. If your hair is in a desperate state, then try our new hair “botox” system. This literally fills in the gaps in damaged hair, leaving it fuller and smoother. I’ve seen it used many times in the salon, giving great results, and it really does last.
Finally, if there’s one thing you really must do to keep blonde hair looking its best is to maintain that root regrowth. Leaving your roots to show looks bad. No matter how well your cut is, or how you style it, roots are THE big no-no. If you’re not happy with your blonde shade, ask your stylist for advice. Don’t put up with a shade you do not like. It is so easy to do something about it - with your salon’s help.
By Ruth Benson P H O T O - S H O PPING has been relatively unheard of until recently, with more and more models and celebrities being photoshopped.
Magazines, in particular, use photo-shopping and airbrushing, basically to change the image of the person photographed: making the person thinner, giving a better complexion, taller, browner … you name, it they can do it. But is it right? Are these images really what we want to see? Would we prefer to see the celebrities with a spot on their face or cellulite? The main debate concerns celebrities who are known because of their body shape, only to discover they have been completely changed. The first example was of Kate Winslet in GQ
41 CW
Is this the real life… or is it fantasy? in 2003. Kate seems to have been stretched out for the cover of the magazine. Last year, probably the most shocking was the billboard poster for the film The Heat, which starred Melissa McCarthy. Melissa, standing alongside Sandra Bullock, was unrecognisable - even her eye colour and facial expression were changed. The most recent example causing outrage is of Lena Dunham, star of new American sitcom Girls. The sitcom is based on her character accepting her body as it is. She is not a size zero, and has lumps, bumps and cellulite like most of us, which is the attraction of the show. Rather than the image of the women in Sex in the City, this sitcom shows normal women and how they live, day to day. The reason she has been criticised is that she has posed for Vogue, where her famous image
from the show has been airbrushed. So if they stopped airbrushing and photo-shopping altogether, would we buy the magazines? Do we want to see the celebrities looking exactly as they are, or are these images giving us something to aspire to? Aerie lingerie, based in America, announced this week that it has used no photo-shopping with its new campaign. Brand representative Jenny Altman told Good Morning America: “We left beauty marks, tattoos and any other blemishes; what you see is what you really get with our campaign.” The aim of the campaign is for women to embrace their own bodies and beauty, rather than trying to strive for images perceived in the media. Its slogan is all about embracing yourself, and I can’t help but agree with campaigners when they say: “The real you is sexy.” Here, here!

Energy drinks ‘are danger to children’ A UK Government adviser believes energy drinks should be banned from schools because, he fears ,they are a danger to youngsters.
So concerned is John Vincent about the pep drinks that he warns: “They are effectively another form of drugs.” Mr Vincent is part of a team recruited by the Government to improve the health and nutrition of meals served to youngsters under the School Food Plan. “The amount of sugar and caffeine in these drinks is, in our view, effectively allowing drugs into schools,” he says. “We don’t do that and neither do we think they should be part of school life. “It has a hugely damaging effect on their ability to concentrate and how they feel - and it is having
health effects.” The British Soft Drinks Association said: “Highcaffeine energy drinks are not recommended in the UK for consumption by children.” Drinks such as Monster, Red Bull and Relentless combine sugar and caffeine in such high quantities that children who consume them are said to become hyperactive and difficult to control. Manufacturers and retailers have a voluntary
ban on the sale of the drinks to under-16s, but there is no law preventing purchases. The official line from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) is that children should limit the consumption of those drinks which are high in caffeine. An FSA spokesman said: “Some people are more sensitive to caffeine. For example, children are generally not used to having caffeine, and they also have lower body weights
than adults. “So we recommend that they limit their intake of high-caffeine drinks, as it could potentially lead to short-term effects such as increased excitability, irritability, nervousness or anxiety.” He added: “Some children and young sportsmen and women, encouraged by sporting stars such as Premier League footballers, are opting for an energy drink for breakfast rather than a bowl of cereal.” Some 500ml cans of energy drink contain the equivalent of more than 13 teaspoons of sugar and 160mg of caffeine, which is about the same as in four cans of cola. And evidence from teachers and youngsters themselves is that children who drink these cans may report feeling sick, shaky and dizzy. Some schools have implemented a ban on the drinks, but this is a
patchy area and most do not apply any controls. Ian Fenn, head teacher of Manchester’s Burnage Media Arts College, has banned the drinks following requests from staff. He told the BBC: “Staff came to me and said that at a school where we are very conscious about the nutritional value of what they eat, we can’t allow boys to bring in drinks that are really unhealthy for them - and consume not one, but two or three tins.” Claire Duggan, a schools’ public health adviser, said children report feeling sick, shaky and, sometimes, dizzy after downing the drinks. “They say the rush it gave them could be quite scary if they drank it very fast,” she added. A study published by German researchers in December found that energy drinks packed with caffeine could change the way the heart beats.
The team, from the University of Bonn, imaged the hearts of 17 people and found contractions were more forceful after the drink. The team told the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America that children and people with some health conditions should avoid the drinks. It has emerged that US manufacturer Monster Beverage Corp is under investigation in San Francisco and New York for marketing its drinks to children. The legal action is based on the risk to youngsters of consuming drinks with high caffeine levels. In 2012, the parents of a 14-year-old California girl launched a lawsuit against Monster, claiming its drinks were responsible for causing her a heart attack, brought on by caffeine toxicity. This was denied by the company.

It’s great turning Japanese THE “Gourmetland” group are responsible for some amazing restaurants in Tenerife.
They have made a real impression, and it’s no surprise to see copycat restaurants popping up over town. When they regenerated Americas Plaza a few years back, they raised the bar. La Martina, Mamma Mia and then Embrujo were real signature restaurants. But in many ways, it was Oriental Garden which set the standard. The other restaurants rely on a certain style, while Oriental Garden offered so much variety. You could choose from Asian, Thai, Indian, Teppanyaki or Japanese dishes. And it’s nice to see that so little has changed. As
the old saying goes: “If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it.” At Oriental Garden, they still have some of the original staff and it’s great to see how much pride they take in their work. And it’s the little things you notice. The constant, real smiles; none of this painted-on-cheek opener you can see. The knowledge of the dishes. The “nothing-is-too-much-trouble” attitude. It really makes a difference to the dining experience. As mentioned above, at Oriental Garden there is so much choice. When you get the menu, you spend five minutes going through all the options and then another five trying to work out how hungry you really are, and how many dishes you can try. But for this visit I had a plan. And I was going to stick to it, no matter
what. I was going to go Japanese all the way and that meant starting with Sushi. There is no grey area when it comes to sushi as it is what it is. Raw fish. Some people literally cannot stomach it, and these are normally the type who haven’t tried it. Or they have had bad sushi and been scared for life. Sushi has to be prepared with care. It’s unrushed. It’s a relaxing dish. The chef takes his time slicing or rolling. There is a vast menu at Oriental Garden, and we went for the “Dragon”, which is river eel, along with some salmon and my personal favourite, tuna. It was amazing. Eel is so under-rated as a sushi dish and it’s hard to find it fresh, fresh. The salmon had a wonderful texture and the tuna was to die for.
When it’s this good, you just shake your head at the thought that people would cook it, or even consider putting it in a sandwich. After a much-needed breather, it was on to some old favourites: Marinated chicken skewers, Japanese Pork with mushrooms, scallops with spring onion and beef rolls. These are all cooked on the Teppanyaki, and they have that unique flavour you get only when it’s
cooked that way. It was a good combination of starters. It’s enough food to keep you happy, and perfect to share with a partner or in a group. A little of everything, with the scallops a wonderful, surprise hit. It’s a dish that seems so simple, but they are devilishly hard to get right. Often, they are underseasoned and bland. Or overcooked and chewy. Not here. The spring onions and the chef’s seasoning left us craving for
more. But with the main course to come, we wisely avoiding ordering seconds. Again, it’s hard to select just a couple of dishes, but we went for the spicy Duck and special Beef. This was served with Japanese rice. Now, rice is rice isn’t it? Wrong. The Japanese rice is a few pennies more - and worth every cent. I’ll not spoil the surprise of what’s in it (well, apart from the finely-diced peppers, whose crunch makes the meal). But let’s just say that once you’ve had it, you will never go back to “normal” rice. Again, all the dishes were first-rate. And if I had to pick a flaw, you could argue the portions were too big. But that’s like a millionaire moaning that his wallet is too small to hold all his 500euro notes. Oriental Garden is in Americas Plaza in Las Americas, opposite Mediterranean Palace. Thousands pack La Caleta to celebrate San Sebastian ADEJE was buzzing with over 20,000 pilgrims on Sunday and Monday as the small town of La Caleta celebrated one of its most popular saints, San Sebastián.
Residents from the borough’s multi-cultural hub mixed with tourists. Many people brought their pets down for the traditional blessing after midday mass. San Sebastián is one of Adeje’s patron saints and his feast day is celebrated every year through mass, song, and the hugely-popular tradition of riding horses down to the La Enramada beach for a bathe as the saint’s statue is also carried down to the water’s edge. The San Sebastián fiesta is one of the oldest in Tenerife and, certainly, one of the most original. And this year didn’t disappoint the thousands there to capture the special moments. Adeje Culture Councillor Nayra Medina Bethencourt was delighted with the participation of people from all over the Island and beyond, adding that there were noticeably more pets and horse
riders than last year. “The feast of San Sebastián has been celebrated here since the 18th century and has always been a celebration of harmonious coexistence,” she said. “Every year, more and more people come to seek the blessing and protection of our saint. This is, without doubt, one of the most enjoyed fiestas in South Tenerife, and we are always looking ahead to make sure that future generations continue to celebrate the tradition.” After the trip to the sea and the statue returned to the plaza, the blessing of animals took place, with dogs, cats, turtles, hamsters, birds and goats among the recipients. This year, Adeje coun-
cil also organised a tapas/pinchos competition among the restaurants providing food and drink during the festival, with the public voting. It ended in a draw,
with stalls from Fañabé and Taucho both delighting the public’s taste buds. Others taking part in the two-day event included many small, local, traditional singing
groups, and the stand for the Adeje Clean and Healthy campaign was also a draw. Information leaflets on the ongoing campaign were available in English, Spanish, German and French, as well as presentation dog collars and re-usable shopping bags, Mention also has to be made of the excellent work done by all the local security forces. The police kept the streets clear with good humour and friendliness, and the work of the local Civil Protection unit on the beach was perfectly firm but sympathetic to the many members of the public jostling for best position as the horses made their way to the water. All in all, another successful Adeje fiesta to remember for people and animals.

Mystery of the suitcase dog THIS gorgeous dog was found in Los Cristianos tied to a tree with a suitcase and a box of clothes!
She also had a ring attached to her collar, which is now with the police. This really is a strange case, and if anybody has any information on the dog’s owner, please contact the refuge. The refuge has already seen a large intake of new dogs in January, so if you are looking for a pet, please visit us. There is no charge for an adoption, but a donation is welcome towards the upkeep of the dogs. Every dog, before leaving the refuge, is microchipped, passported, castrated or sterilised, fully inoculated and has a clean bill of health, giving you peace of mind - and your new dog the best start to its new life. Bruma who lives at the refuge, has been here
since 2006. She was one of many dogs which arrived at the refuge from Arico when the refuge was first opened. Every year, she has her injections as well as monthly treatment for heartworm, fleas and any other veterinary care needed. This is all made possible by the members of Aktiontier, our German sponsors, and their loyal supporters, and we thank you all. Bruma has waited patiently so long for a new home, but she has made her life at the refuge with a lot of other old, unwanted dogs. She has a relatively nice life but she lacks some human contact and would love a walk now and then. If you have any spare
time, please pop in to see us (and the dogs) because you really could make some of pour inmates extremely happy. Accion’s four main events this year at the refuge are: 4th May: Spring party 6th June: Summer party 5th October: Autumn party 7th December: Christmas party Please remember these new opening times of the refuge, from 1st February: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 2-5pm Saturday: 1-4pm The refuge will be closed Wednesday, Sunday and on major holidays. Please call 922 778 630 for more information, or if you would like to help out in any way The refuge is situated at Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the Ecological Park ( ITER) where the windmills are.

Cam-belt care so vital By Emma Swain MOST cars use a cam belt, often referred to as timing belt, which forms an integral part of the engine and is vital for its function.
Manufacturers recommend changing these at certain mileage/kilometres, and this figure varies from make to make. Sometimes, they specify it should be changed when the car reaches a certain age, even though it may not have clocked the recommended distance. A good mechanic will also replace the timingbelt tensioner at the same time, which is a more cost-effective idea
than changing it at a later date. In modern engines, cam belts and matching components are often subjected to a great deal of stress. High rotational speeds, vibrations and extreme temperatures (especially here in Tenerife) can easily have a negative effect on the functioning of parts. Cracks may appear below the metal surface, overheating, or wornout sealing rings of ballbearings - these can all lead to increased metal wear - and even the jam-
ming of pulleys. This, in turn, can easily damage the belt. If a timing belt snaps when the engine is running, it can cause costly and, sometimes, irreparable damage to your engine. This is because some of the valves will have been held open when they should not be, and, thus, will be struck by the pistons. The usual failure of timing belts is either stripped teeth (which leave a smooth section of belt where the drive
cog will slip) or delamination and unravelling of the fibre cores. Correct belt tension is critical: too loose and the belt will whip; too tight and it will whine and put excess strain on the bearings of the cogs. In either case, belt life will be drastically shortened. Aside from the belt itself, also common is a failure of the tensioner, and/or the various gear and idler bearings, causing the belt to derail. And that’s why it is advisable to change the tensioner at the same time as the belt. In an internal combustion engine application, the timing belt connects the crankshaft to the camshaft(s), which, in turn, controls the opening and closing of the engine’s valves. A four-stroke engine requires that the valves open and close once every other turns of the crankshaft. The timing belt does this very im-
portant job. It has custom teeth to turn the camshaft(s), synchronised with the crankshaft, and is specifically designed for a particular engine. In some engine designs, the timing belt may also be used to drive other engine components, such as the water and oil pumps. A timing belt is, typically, rubber, with hightensile fibres running the length of the belt as tension members. Rubber degrades with higher temperatures and with contact with motor oil. Thus, the life expectancy of a timing belt is lowered in hot or leaky engines. Newer or more expensive belts are made of temperature-resistant materials such as “highly-saturated nitrile”. Older belts have trapezoid-shaped teeth, leading to high rates of tooth wear. Newer manufacturing techniques allow for curved teeth,
which are quieter and last longer. But timing belts are generally inaccessible and difficult to inspect. The manufacturer or your mechanic may also recommend the replacement of other parts, such as the water pump, when the timing belt is replaced. That’s because the additional cost to replace the water pump is negligible compared with the cost of accessing the timing belt. You may then find it much more cost-effective to change the timing belt tensioner and water pump all at the same time. If you would like to know at what mileage/kilometres your car should have had, or should have a cam belt changed, please email me the following details: make, model, engine size and year, to emma@motorworldtenerife.com and I will happily advise you.

And it’s all gone wrong CD Tenerife 0 Alcorcon 4
By Roscoe DO you remember when you were young, and you use to hide behind the sofa while watching Doctor Who? This was the footballing equivalent. Tenerife manager Alvaro Cervera is a big music man, and he was probably whistling the John Lennon classic Nobody Told Me There’d Be Days Like These as the goals flew in. It wasn’t that Tenerife were bad; it’s just that they were so bad, you had to keep checking the team sheet. Was this really the same side who battered Las Palmas before Christmas? The same warriors who won in Murcia? And the lads who ground out a point with high-flying Sporting Gijon? Only 24 hours beforehand, it was like the night of the long knives. Four players left the club, long-serving Sergio Aragoneses Position
was paid off, while an agreement was finally reached with exciting youngster Sandro. His contract was terminated and he joined Las Palmas instantly. It’s the latest in a long Points
line of baffling decisions by the CDT board when it comes to the youngsters. The minute they show promise, they are binned. Sandro looked a player last season on-loan at CD Marino, and he F

started pre-season brightly. But behind the scenes there was trouble, and he hasn’t kicked a ball since August. His move to our arch-rivals will bite us on the bum one day. Less of a surprise was the departure of Oscar, who has been rubbish since he joined in August. And fans’ favourite Raul Llorente (pictured) has moved to Greece. He always gave his all and will be remembered for his “worldy” goal against L’Hospitalet in last year’s plays-offs. So the squad was a little thinner by the time Alcorcon pitched up. Last year, they made the play-offs, but offfield problems have led to a real hangover. They started the match in the relegation zone, but showed why many believe they should be in the top six as they tore Tenerife to shreds. It was a wonder they needed 14 minutes to open the scoring as they carved open the Tenerife defence at will. Javito plundered the first, and nine minutes later he made it two.
There was no marking, no leadership - and Roberto in goal was like a rabbit in the headlights. I completely understand why they have given Roberto a run and why they got the club’s highest earner off the books. But nobody is telling me that Sergio Aragoneses would have done any worse than Roberto recently. We saw against Sabadell how he makes poor decisions - and again on Saturday he showed what he is: a very young kid with nobody to guide him. If Tenerife badly need a striker, then they also need of a wise old owl in goal. And on Thursday they signed one! Diego Rivas has joined from Elche on loan until the end of the season. But he has been injured recently and may need a few weeks to be fully match fit. With Rigo having a shocker at centre-back, Tenerife were there for the taking. They showed precious little fight, despite the urgings from a crowd who were brilliant. A howler from Roberto gifted Verdes the third, and Julio’s fourth, 10 minutes from time, was another kick in the plums. It was unacceptable, as the players admitted. Captain Suso said: “I can offer few explanations. We have no choice but to lift our heads and think about the Hercules game this weekend. “The opponents were excellent. They knew how to play. But I do not think that the departure of so many players was a factor. “We have no doubts that we will get the job done. After the Sabadell defeat, we went to Murcia and we won.” He added: “It’s a defeat that bothers you because it is home defeat to a direct rival. But we will work flat-
out to beat Hercules.” Centre-back Carlos Ruiz added: “We have to do some soul-searching and look at ourselves. Next Sunday, we will go for broke against Hercules. “Maybe in the dressing room we knew we had to come out and play tighter, and close down better. Yes, there have been two bad games recently. But we have shown in adverse situations that we can raise our game and we will start that this week and be ready for Hercules on Sunday.”
Canarian Weekly ratings CD Tenerife: Roberto 5, Moyano 5, Rigo 4 (Chechu 46min 5), Ruiz 6, Camara 5 (Nano 60min 6), Suso 6, Rivero 5 (Alberto 77min), Ros 6, Martin 5, Aridane 5, Ayoze 5. AD Alcorcó n: Gimenez 6, Camille 6, Verdes 7, Chema 7, Angel 6, Julio 7, Sanz 6 (Jony 57min 6), Martinez 7, Pacheco 9, Javito 8 (Jaime 86min), Prendes 7 (Serran 82min). The Hercules match is now a must-not-lose encounter because Tenerife have slipped back into the relegation zone. While the hosts are no great shakes, they have steadily improved during the season and are a solid outfit. They got an excellent point and clean sheet at Real Zaragoza last weekend, but the hosts did get stuffed 5-0 by Barca B a few weeks back, and they do not score too many. If Tenerife can keep it tight, they should return from Alicante with a point. However it is worth pointing out that in the league, Tenerife have NEVER beaten Hercules!

Well the Barclays Premier League gets more interesting by the week in terms of results, which has meant it has not been the highest point scoring week in Oasis FM Fantasy league either. To offer further proof of how strange results are getting, if you look at the team of the week, which are the highest point’s scorers, only four of the team are from clubs in the top four! Norwich have two players, West Brom,
tiny in their own hands. With fixtures against the Shamrocks and La Caña Lancers looming, it is theirs for the taking. For their part, the Shamrocks lost just one point against the Playgirls, while the Lancers had a tough local derby with Pas O Nadas. A fiercely-fought encounter ended with the Lancers taking the trebles
Crystal Palace, Newcastle, Sunderland and Spurs all provide a player, making up the eleven man team. I think that is testament to the performance the lower placed teams are turning in. Looking at our league though, you have to wonder if anybody is going to move Steve Schofield’s ‘Tenerife Hotspurs’? Once again they remain in top spot and this week slightly improved the gap to sec-
for victory. The Hunters caused a minor upset as they beat Picasso’s, and Bar 180 D cruised to a convincing 6-2 win over Amistad 2. Last but not least, The Rebels entertained “just round the corner” Phoenix Flights, who held their nerve to steal the trebles for a draw. As mentioned above, players from the Oasis
Fm Darts League who won through in our competition, will be on stage tonight at Showtime, Karting Las Americas, to play Simon Whitlock or James Wade. They are, Mick (Bar 180 A), Rob (Bar 180 C), Alan (Sundowners) and Sarah (La Cana Lancers). Good luck to you all. We are sure it will prove to be a fantastic evening!

ond place, that being said it only takes a bad point’s week and the gap can soon be closed but games are running out! Team of the week this week is Andy Palmer’s ‘Premier Sat Utd’ with a decent points haul of 76 points and this week I am going to mention the second highest point scoring team, which is my son Joe Benson’s ‘Tenerife Avengers’, especially as he might not score that well again,
and yes, I do allow him to pick his own team! Wooden spoon of the week goes to Peter Beach’s ‘Romero’, who managed to score a lowly eleven point’s, I think your team needs a little tweaking Peter! There are no Premier League games this weekend as it is the FA Cup Fourth Round but the Premier League returns to action on Tuesday 28th, so don’t forget to make your changes by then!

Leaders edge home again
THE Direct Telecom Pool League got back to regular action this week after last week’s cup games - and it is still tight at the top of Division 1.
It is looking more and more likely that it will all hinge on the fixtures between Tenerife Hammers A and Gaffers A, as there is only a point separating the teams. Hammers A faced off against stablemates Hammers C and didn’t have it all their own way. The match was nicely poised at 4-3 to the A team, but the boys from the C team missed a few chances and suddenly it was 6-3, Tony should then have beaten Jambo, but he played a slack shot and let his opponent in - and it was game over! The match finished 8-4 with both teams then sharing a nice plate of eels. Gaffers A kept pace at the top with a 7-5 win over Inn the Pink A, who have been in fine form of late. It was a hard-fought contest which went to the wire. But the Pink boys will be kicking themselves after letting slip a 4-2 lead. Eventually, Gaffers captain Neil beat Gareth in the last frame to get his team over the line. Third-placed Phoenix Knights had no such trouble in their game against Dreamers A, the Los Abrigos lads racing into an 8-0 lead. The Dreamers fought back to ensure there was no whitewash, but the damage had already been done and the game finished 9-3. La Caña A stay in fourth place after getting past Peacocks
7-5. In Silencio, Exiles A faced off against Palms A and soon found themselves 5-3 up. However, Del (currently the league’s 5th-best player), who had lost both his frames, was controversially dropped for the last set of frames. Palms A sniffed blood and it was soon 5-5. Then JT and Heineken eased the Torviscas team’s nerves with two top-drawer finishes to clinch three points for Palms A. In Division 2, it looks like a straight fight between the top four teams for promotion

places. But because of games in hand, there are another couple of teams who could still gatecrash, demonstrating just how close it is at the top. Inn the Pink B, currently occupying top spot, are hoping to join their A team in Division One next season. And they picked up three points with an easy 10-2 win over Treehouse B. Palms B, are breathing down their necks, though, and were comfortable winners
over Gaffers C, even though captain Eeyore dropped bang-in-form Shai. Anything to get a game himself! Gaffers B, in fourth place, also kept themselves in the mix by easing past 2JZ’s to take three points. Bluebell B and Exiles B had the opportunity to move closer to the top four, but both teams blew their chances, losing to Tenerife Pool Tables and Toscales B respectively. Kandi13 and Hoppys played out a midtable game. Kandi
found themselves 6-3 up, but Squid, Ryan and Lee lost the last three games to leave it honours even. Down at the bottom of the league, Dreamers B could not improve their position after losing to La Caña B in Los Abrigos. Piccaso’s A could fair no better in their quest to move up the league after losing 10-2 Bluebell A. The draw has been made for the next round of the cup and the plate. Matches to be played on 4th Feb.

FA Cup, 4th Round preview By Adi Benson JUMPERS for goalposts! It’s the romance of the F.A. Cup this weekend, and the fourth round is upon us.
Kidderminster Harriers are the last non-League team still in the competition, and can they make the last 16? It’s certainly an opportunity for players to make a name for themselves. And I hope I got the fixtures correct, but, try as I might, I couldn’t see when or where Man Utd were playing! Arsenal v Coventry (Tonight, Friday: 8pm) The question is, how much do Arsenal want to win a trophy this season? They are top of the Premier League, but I still believe it is Man City’s title to lose. So the FA Cup could be a nice consolation for Arsenal after so many barren seasons. Coventry are 11th in League One, which is some achievement as they started the season on minus 10 points. They have a strong squad, the players have great belief and they will take 7,000 to the Emirates. Prediction: Draw Bournemouth v Liverpool (Saturday, 12.45pm) As a Liverpool fan, this is the sort of fixture that makes me nervous. Bournemouth are a mid-table Championship side and offer the sort of challenge Liverpool struggle with. The Cherries have the home advantage and you can bet your life the players will get stuck in right from the whistle. Oldham chinned Liverpool at this stage last season, and you get the feeling that Brendan Rodgers will need to play a strong team if they are to get through. Prediction: Away win (Editor says: “Mug. Home win”)
Sunderland v Kidderminster Harriers (Saturday: 3pm) If the Conference team are to pull off a giant-killing, this is a great opportunity for them. Sunderland have had a couple of tough Premier League games, and a League Cup semi-final second leg against Man Utd coming into this game. Throw in the fact that they are involved in a relegation battle and it sets this game up perfectly. Kidderminster have nothing to lose, and their Cup record over the last few seasons is outstanding. No non-League side has ever beaten a Premier League team on the road at this stage of the FA Cup. Well, until this weekend. Prediction: Away win Southampton v Yeovil (Saturday: 3pm) Southampton have had a turbulent week, and the last thing they need is a Cup match against the greatest giant-killers in history. Despite the predictions of doom, Yeovil have done okay in the Championship, winning at Birmingham last week. I expect Southampton to have a difficult afternoon, but they will get the job done. Prediction: Home win Southend v Hull (Saturday: 3pm) Southend are having a decent season. They are in the League 2 play-off places, and, to make the tie even spicier, they are managed by Phil Brown, who, famously, got Hull promoted to the Premier Division. Steve Bruce will go with a strong team as he is keen on a Cup run. They are 11th in the Premier League and may blood their new, expensive strikers. It will be a blood-andthunder match and it’s a shame it is not on TV. Prediction: Away win Wigan v Crystal Palace (Saturday: 3pm) Last season’s FA Cup winners had a scare in the third round against MK Dons, but Wigan have been going well in the Championship since Christmas. Tony Pulis has steadied
the ship at Palace and stopped them conceding so many goals. Premier League survival is paramount for him, and a cup run can be distracting. But he has been to a cup final recently. Prediction: Home win Stevenage v Everton (Saturday: 5.30pm) This is another one of those fixtures that throws up a conundrum for a manager - in this case,
Everton’s Roberto Martinez. Stevenage are at the bottom of League 1, so it should be an easy game for Everton. But they have a trip to Anfield on Tuesday in the League, and with Everton a point behind Merseyside rivals Liverpool, they may be guilty of complacency. So come on Stevenage! Prediction: Home win (Ed says: “Mug. Away
win.”) Sheffield Utd v Fulham (Sunday: 1pm) It’s hard to believe that Sheffield Utd were once a Premier League side, especially as they are languishing in 19th position in League 1 and facing a relegation fight. Mind you, Fulham are hardly in a better position themselves. They have an ageing squad and are fighting for their own survival,
so this is a game they could probably do without. Bramhall Lane can still be a daunting place to visit, and United will really fancy their chances of providing a Cup upset at home. Fulham won’t want another loss because club confidence is already low, so this could end up being the game of the weekend. Prediction: Home win
