OIL MAKE IT HAPPEN! CANARY ISLAND residents will have the final say on the future of oil exploration, according to Paulino Rivero.

The Canaries’ Government President essentially declared war on the national government during a fiery press conference this week. When asked, “Do you agree with Repsol’s search for oil off the Canary Islands?”, he came out all guns blazing. “There must be a referendum,” he stressed. “This project has a special significance for the Islands. The reasonable thing is to consult the people.” He called on Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to have an open, honest and frank debate on the subject before allowing any exploration. Rivero revealed that he has been trying to speak with the PM for the last few days, with no joy. A 2012 Royal Decree permits drilling off the coast of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. But Rivero says: “This act has created a social, scientific, and institutional impact. The possible effects of oil exploration on the environment and tourism are unknown.” Unlike in Catalonia, where, through a claim of devolution in Article 150 of the Constitution, a referendum can be called without Royal involvement, the Canary Islands are subject to Article 92. That reads: “The referendum shall be called by the king, via proposal of the Prime Minister (of the nation), having previously been authorised by Congress.” Rivero’s calls for a debate and then a local referendum have gone down like a lead balloon in Madrid. Jose Manuel Soria, Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism, said a Canary Islands’ referendum would be “Illegal”. He added: “You cannot hold referendums and consultations like this. It would be an illegal referendum consultation, and illegal if

done on matters that are within the jurisdiction of the state.” Soria, strongly in favour of drilling, says the controversy of hydrocarbons in the waters of the Canary Islands is a moot point. “So far, there has not been a single survey or research into this.” he adds. “All you need is the authorisation of the ministry, so that they can make that happen. The report on the environmental impact by the Ministry of Environment is still pending.” The ever-escalating row has caught the eye of the Commissioner for Development of SelfGovernment and Institutional Reforms. Fernando Rios believes that consultation

promoted by the Canary Islands Government on oil exploration “is legal and profoundly democratic”. Rios states that Rivero’s claim is based on the provisions of the Statute of Autonomy, of the Spanish Constitution and the Rules of Procedure of the Canary Islands. “It seems that the ruling Popular Party fears the voice of the Canaries in matters that directly affects them.” he said. He pointed out that

Articles 203 of the Rules of Procedure of the Canary Islands, plus the Home Rule 32.5 and 92 of the Constitution, provide for the possibility to consult on issues of special importance. But Rivero has also pointed out that the Canary Islands has statutory powers in the affected areas by surveys, such as economic planning and management (Article 31.4), tourism (Article 31.21) and environmental protection (Article 32.12 ). Rios also slammed Soria’s stance saying: “Regarding the status of the case, contrary to what was said by the minister, the Canary Islands are already in the second stage of oil prospecting. “They have made 10 years of research along with Repsol. In my opinion, the Spanish Ministry is violating its own transparency law.” Drilling has been provisionally scheduled for the end of the summer, but this is now unlikely. Both the National Government and Local Government could, in theory, go to court. initially to stop, then appeal, legal decisions from either side. And it seems that the oil companies which hold permits will also be dragged into court. The oil issue is highly controversial and it’s easy to see both arguments. Oil production would give a massive boost to the national economy, and the local as well. But the long-term dangers are obvious. Many Canarians are wary of the dangers and the long-term effects it could have to the tourist economy. This is where Rivero is being politically savvy. While he is neither pro or against the oil drilling, on the record at least, he does raise some sensitive self-governing issues. Those in favour of Canarian independence have been boosted by recent talk of a Catalan independence referendum. And Rivero’s insistence on a local decision on oil, in the face of strong national interest, does little to dampen long-term, Independence thoughts.

Abortion Law

reform draws closer THE Socialist Workers Party (PSOE) has called for a withdrawal to a reform of the Abortion Law in Spain.

But the ruling Popular Party has taken the proposed reform a step closer in a “secret” ballot, which produced 183 votes against the petition’s withdrawal, 151 in favour, and six abstentions. The Reform to the Abortion Law proposes to outlaw ALL abortions, except in the case of rape, or when continuing pregnancy puts the mother’s life at risk, and

has been widely criticised. Women wishing to terminate a pregnancy will be required to see two doctors to verify that the conditions are met. Polls indicate that 7080% of people are op-

posed to what they call “rolling back” the country’s abortion laws. Carmen Montón, of the PSOE, said the idea of the vote was to encourage MPs to vote with their constituents, rather than follow the

party line, again mentioning that the majority of Spaniards are against the reform. Possibly, the toughest opposition to quashing the reform comes from Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who has

defended the changes, often citing that they will fulfil an electoral promise. It comes as no surprise

that the Popular party has pushed for the reform, given its historical ties to the Catholic Church.

Don’t drink dodgy water! Tourism points way to more jobs, says Alonso ELEVEN municipalities in the north have been warned that it is unsafe to drink tap water.

Even the Puerto de la Cruz supply is off-limits because of an excess of fluoride in the domestic supply. The Public Health Department, which issued the warning, also advised that tap water in the affected areas should not be used for cooking or preparing food. The readings have been known for over a

year, but there are differences in the guidelines. For El Tanque and Los Silos, the restriction is for the general population in some areas, whereas in Buenavista, Icod and Garachico, the warning is in place in certain areas only, for children under eight. In El Sauzal, La Matanza, La Victoria, Santa Úrsula and San Juan de la Rambla, the water should not be given to under eights in any areas. The Puerto de la Cruz problem with nitrate means that in Guacimara-Esquilón and Punta Brava, tap water is not

to be used by children under three, or pregnant women. While “acceptable” levels of fluoride in water can help prevent cavities, prolonged exposure to excess fluoride can affect the hardness of dental enamel. It can cause calcification, and a condition known as “fluorosis,” which can alter the appearance of children’s teeth as they develop. The critical time for monitoring total fluoride intake is between one and four years of age, with the risk ending at around the age of eight.

CABILDO President Carlos Alonso discussed proposed amendments to the Tourism Law on Tuesday with his Gran Canaria opposite number, José Miguel Bravo de Laguna.

They have differing ideas and it seems as though the amendment can no longer go forward. Alonso believes that growing tourism at the high end, with five-star hotels, will produce

more employment, which the Islands desperately need. Bravo de Laguna, on the other hand, is committed to promoting four-star facilities. Despite their individual approaches, though, dialogue was said to be “productive” and Bravo de Laguna agreed their positions had “more commonalities than differences”. The two will continue discussions to try to find some common ground. Alonso believes that more jobs will be created by offering more five-star accommodation (the staff-to-client

ratio increases the more luxury is offered). But Bravo de Laguna says the emphasis should be on increasing the number of “affordable” hotel beds, to make the Islands more financially viable for the “average” tourist. The recent meetings between the mayors of both Islands’ capital cities, José Manuel Bermúdez, from Santa Cruz, and Juan José Cardona, of Las Palmas, were cited as a model of a way forward, where the Island rivalry is to be set aside somewhat for the greater good of the Canaries as a whole.

Brits go all-out for All-Inclusives MORE than three million people opted for allinclusive holidays in the Canary Islands last year.

But the 3,212,050 figure - 28.8% of the overall total - supplied by the Canary Islands Statistics Institute (Istac), was 51,419 fewer than in 2012. Despite the drop, it was still the most popular option for visitors, ahead of flight and accommodation (2,804,407) and halfboard (2,121,183). The all-inclusives again attracted more British holiday-makers than any other nation, 1,064,362, and they were also No.1 in the loyalty chart. Of the 3,957,776 who came to the Canaries last year, 1,501,908

Russians are still coming!

TENERIFE is the preferred choice for the vast majority of Russians visiting the Canary Islands.

The year-on-year increase is quite astonishing, with nearly three times as many visitors in 2013 as there were in 2009 (68,000 in 2009 to 185,000 last year). These figures come from the Cabildo’s Tenerife Tourism department. But while the percentage increase may suggest that the Russians are arriving

in droves, it should be pointed out that they occupy fourth place in the international visitors’ table. Brits are still top of the pile with 1.5 million visitors last year, followed by Germans (800,000). Even with the steady rise, Russians accounted for a 3.7% share of the tourism market in Tenerife. Of those who came on holiday here last year, just over 94% opted to stay in the south, and just under 66% chose hotels over apartments. The Russians, along with the Dutch, have

the highest occupancy in five-star accommodation (around 17%), but they are better represented four-star level (almost 33% choosing this star rating.) In addition, the Russians holidaying here are more affluent than the Island’s average visitor (spending 72 euros a day, which is nearly twice the average). And thanks to improved air links - the number of flights from Russian airports has doubled in the past few years - this trend is set to continue.

had been at least three times previously. But the Germans stayed the longest on average, each chalking up 10.78 days on the Islands, followed by the British (9.71) and and the Spanish (8.04). As for those holidaymakers opting for apartments, their stay averaged just over 1½ days longer than those who stayed in hotels (10.36 days against 8.74 days).

In a survey of the 8,838,397 tourists here last year, most voted their stay “very good” or “good”, with just 58,407 offering a negative view. The British were the most generous with their reviews (2,707,065) and the Spanish most critical. And in a scale of one to 10, the Islands’ best assets (rated 8 or above) were the climate, hospitality, scenery and tranquillity.

Stadium upgrade underway

TENERIFE Cabildo has started work on a major redevelopment of one of the south’s main football areas.

Refurbishment of the green area opposite the

Arona football field in central Las Americas is underway. A budget of more than 200,000 euros is in place for the scheme, which is part of the Tourism Convention Regeneration project. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said the municipality of Arona will

benefit in the long term. He added: “This is the first of five actions to improve the tourism space between now and the end of 2015. We are spending over four million euros.” In addition to the work on the football field annex, there will

be improved parking areas implemented on Avenida Rafael Puig, City Centre Square opposite Parque Santiago and landscape work for Chayofa as part of the improvement to the TF-1 exit 28 plans. Alonso said: “These types of actions are fun-

damental to improving the image for the tourists. These are key to improvements. This will help the quality of the destination, its preservation and renovation to remain competitive with tourists.” The regeneration next to the football field will

take six months and will see a complete revamp of the space to improve its suitability. The project includes an improved pedestrian route, widening the sidewalk and a reserved space for a future bike path, linking Las Americas with Adeje.

Air cargo traffic halved AIR traffic cargo coming into the Canaries has dropped by 52% since 2007, with textiles, footwear and accessories suffering the most.

A new study reveals that the decline coincides with the start of the recession, while on the other side of the coin, exports of plants and flowers have been hardest hit. In 2007, 82.3 million kilos of charge came into the Islands. And this figure fell to 39.4 million kilos last year. The information comes from CEOETenerife (the Provincial Confederation of Employers) after being collected by the Spanish

Airports and Air Navigation Agency (AENA). By airport, Tenerife South’s Reina Sofia

air-cargo port has seen a drop of 62.9%, followed by Great Canaria (-49.9%) and Tenerife

North (-46.4%). On a national level, the Canary Islands’ air charge ports handled 11.14% of

all air cargo on a national level in 2007, a figure which has dropped to 6.18% in 2013.

According To CEOETenerife, the slump is directly linked to the recession, along with a slow but steady trend towards maritime traffic - more timeconsuming, but often a more economical way of transporting certain goods. The new Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF), has arisen from the current reforms, and aims to create a register of aircraft and airlines in the archipelago Its ultimate goal is to increase the traffic of goods and passengers to the Islands, and to raise the airports’ profile. If this is achieved, it is hoped that the economic and social development of the Canary Islands will be heading in the right direction.

Kathy’s crazy for Beyonce

The editor says...

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

The old and the bold... ANOTHER week and another warm welcome to a new contributor. I’m sure you will enjoy reading Monica Dyson’s column on page 38. Monica makes some very good points and it’s a subject I’ve broached with my parents. I’m a firm believer in enjoying life and living for today. Just this week I had another friend pass away, barely a few days after sharing a cava and a joke. My parents have worked hard and I’m keen for them to enjoy their retirement. Nothing would make me happier than for them to wring every last ounce of pleasure out of every last penny of their pension and savings. It’s their money. But as Monica points out, it’s a generational thing and boy, have times changed. The spirit of the Sixties is certainly living on with our senior generation! Channel 5 are here at the moment filming a few for a real-life documentary. Super Youths or Saga Louts would be an apt title. Most of them still act like teenagers, and I salute everyone of our funloving senior citizens.

Gone are the days of comfy slippers, a sip of port and a bag of Werthers Originals. I’ve also noticed how certain bars and business have cottoned on to the fact that the “Swallows” are cash rich. Or rather happy to spend what they have. More and more venues are putting acts on in the daytime. Leonardos, for example, has something on every afternoon and their Terrace is packed. And, of course, people attract people. There are early-bird dinners popping up as well. I’m not suggesting we are turning into Benidorm, but their presence is certainly stronger this year. And yet, in a few weeks, most of them will be gone. The south will come alive to the sound of push-chairs and kiddie reps. Throw in the end of the Skandi season and the growing east European market and you can see why the tourist board is promoting Tenerife as an island for everyone. I’d certainly rather have the smorgasbord of nationalities and ages we have here than the “eggs in one basket” style of, say, Ibiza.

KATHY SMITH will enjoy Valentine’s Day today (Friday) after winning the big Valentine’s Competition on Oasis Fm.

It was sponsored by Venture Restaurants and Kathy was lucky enough to be drawn out of the hat on Roscoe’s breakfast show. Needless to say, she was stunned: “I have never won anything in my life!” she said. “I’m absolutely over the moon. My husband Chris and I have never had a Valentine’s Day off. “In 25 years I have never been out on Valentine’s

night! We have a restaurant so we are always working.” Tonight, Kathy will enjoy a VIP meal for two in Biancos, in the Safari Centre, followed by cocktails at Magic Lounge Club. And next month she will be whisked off to Barcelona to see Beyonce live in concert. He prize includes flights, accommodation and the tickets to see Beyonce’s only Spanish gig. And she told us how special it is. “I am a massive Beyonce fan,” she said. I love her. I cannot believe it. Barcelona! And that day is also our wedding anniversary!”

Child euthanasia has been approved

Government ‘abandons’ San Andrés SANTA CRUZ Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez believes the Spanish Government has turned its back on the possible plight of San Andrés residents.

Their sea wall is in desperate need of repair - and has been for a long time - despite a commitment made last September by Development Minister Ana Pastor. The Mayor’s view was firmed up even more following his meeting with Deputy Environment Minister Francisco Muñoz. Bermúdez could not hide his bewilderment at the outcome, asking: “What needs to happen so that the Ministry will realise there is no way to do this, other than declaring it an emergency? In that case, work could start tomorrow.” The other option - the commission of reports, the outcome and results, of which will take time The delay seems to stem from a proposal to link the sea wall to the marina close by, but

14th February 2014 - 20th February 2014

Bermúdez believes the two issues are unrelated. And if positive action is not taken soon, the whole project will come to a dead end, leaving it on hold for, perhaps, several years. The semi-submerged dyke has been redued to ruin, and, without a date for the start of renovations, residents face severe flooding again - especially as the variable weather worries the Mayor. He fears that if the Government approves the second option, there will be no dyke left to repair by the time reports and surveys have been completed. Bermudez firmly believes that situation would put people at risk. But his sentiments were opposed by Partido Popular (PP) Santa Cruz spokesperson Cristina Tavío. She said: “The State’s interest in the emergency remains intact and there is all the will in the world to take it forward. There is already money on the table.” She believes the solution lies in within the city’s technical services and the Port Authority, who could be working together to develop the whole area.

LATE yesterday evening (Thursday), Belgium’s parliament passed one of the most controversial bills the world has ever known. A bill allowing euthanasia for terminally-ill children without any age limit was voted into law by 86 votes to 44. There were 12 abstentions. Formally, the King of Belgium still has to sign the bill into law, but this is just a constitutional formality. When the ink is dry, Belgium will become the first country in the world to remove any age limit on the practice. Opponents argue that children cannot make such a decision, but Belgium is not the first country to have child laws on this. The Netherlands has a law which states that euthanasia is legal for

children over the age of 12, provided there is parental consent. But the Belgian law removes even this barrier. Its law-makers have been busy with the country’s euthanasia laws.

The act was decriminalised for terminallyill people over the age of 18 some 12 years ago. But this ruling has seen public anger on both sides. Yesterday,

one man in the public gallery shouted “murderers” as the vote was passed. It is unclear whether any other European countries will follow Belgian’s lead.

DLT found not guilty FORMER Radio 1 DJ Dave Lee Travis was yesterday (Thursday) found not guilty of 12 sex-offence charges.

But a jury was unable to reach verdicts on two remaining charges. The former Top of the Pops presenter, known as DLT, was charged with a string of sex charges dating back more than 30-years. But, like Coronation Street actor Bill Roache, he has been cleared. The jury deliberated for more than three days before clearing Travis after the judge ruled he would accept

a majority verdict. A further hearing will be held at Southwark Crown Court on 24th February to determine what happens next with

the two outstanding charges. As Travis walked free with his wife, Marianne, he said: “All I want to do now is go home and

relax with my wife, who has suffered with me and been by my side all the way through this. “I am not ‘over the moon’. I don’t feel this is a victory. It has been a year-and-a-half of hell. I have lost my reputation, which I may try to get back later.” The Met Police said it will continue to encourage victims of sex crimes to come forward. Travis was the fourth person to be arrested as part of the Met Police’s Operation Yewtree, which was launched in the wake of the Jimmy Savile scandal. It was set up to investigate allegations of historic sex abuse.

House prices still falling!

THE average price of a Canary Island home fell by 6.9% from January 2013 to last month.

Figures from Real Estate Appraisals (Tinsa) show that, nationally, the fall was 7.2% yearon-year. Despite continuing to fall, the drop was less than in December, when a 9.2% slide was regis-

tered from December 2012 to December 2013. Last month’s figure was half of that recorded in January 2013, indicating that the drop in value is slowing down. Yet this will come as no comfort to those who bought in the Canaries during the 2007 peak. That’s because house prices have fallen by 33.8% since the recession began. On a national level, this figure sits at a worrying

40%, with properties in metropolitan areas and the capital experiencing the biggest falls. Homes along the Mediterranean coast in urban areas devalued the least in 2013 (-4.8%). But the values of these properties plummeted far more steeply at the beginning of the recession, and they are now worth 45.8% less than in 2007 - the highest drop in the whole of Spain.

La Gomera-Tenerife routes could grow

LA GOMERA authorities are seeking a subsidy from the Canaries’ Government to enhance travel between Los Cristianos and their main ports.

Their recent meeting with Domingo Berriel, head of Infrastructure and Transport for the Canary Island Govern-

ment was primarily to secure a 75% subsidy for travel to Valle Gran Rey and Playa Santiago, the island’s two autonomous ports, and San Sebastian. The regional government has confirmed its willingness, but has asked the State Government for an increase in the volume of coastal traffic allowed to make the proposal viable. Casimiro Curbelo,

La Gomera’s Cabildo President, was happy with the talks and hinted that, regardless of State involvement, he hopes the Canary Government will go ahead with the subsidy. Garajonay Express triggered the meeting because the company wants to resume a service to cover the routes. If all goes to plan, it could be up and running within two months.

Poncho Pete will blow your mind!

ONE of the finest balloon modellers in the UK is in Tenerife – and he’s causing a stir.

Peter Higham (aka Poncho Pete) started life as a part-time magician before he started twisting balloons. “It just kind of happened.” he said. “I did a bit of magic and because of this I became a bar manager for a year. “I was also doing some magic tricks at the same time, and making things out of balloons. Then a circus came to Cleethorpes, where I was living, and I somehow got talking to the ringmaster. “He offered me a job as his barman and it was mad. I had midgets backflipping off the bar, and a strongman one-arming himself up the roof.

“Then one day I spoke with this clown. He had a bag of balloons and I made a basic dog. He took three balloons and made a monkey in a tree! That was it. I was hooked!” Since then, Peter has progressed at a rapid rate after competing in various competitions. And he is now ranked

No.5 balloon-modeller in the UK. His ambition is to become as good as UK No.1 Dave Grist, of whom he says: “He is unbelievable. He gave me a tip to whistle into the balloon. And not many people can do that!” But his talents do not stop there. In fact, they are mind-blowing. He can do balloon portraits, animals, even large designs, from a Harley Davidson to the Millennium Falcon! He is keen to enjoy Tenerife this year and says: “I’d love to stay. I’ve come for a busman’s holiday. A guy called Ian told me to come here as I would like it here. And I do!” He’s open to ideas for kids clubs, parties or even as part of a show. Fans in flap over Flappy Bird App

Adeje taxis get thumbs-up THE entire Adeje taxi fleet are given a thorough inspection every year and again, they have passed with flying colours. The region has nine vehicles specifically adapted for people with reduced mobility, and they all sailed through the inspections’ programme, carried out by Adeje Council. Transport Councillor Rafael Dolado said: “I want to thank the company which manages the ITV for offering us the use of their space and staff to carry out these checks. “The result has been very successful and we have verified compliance with all the conditions required for these vehicles. I also want to thank and

congratulate our drivers for their work. “They are professionals in this sector and are an important public service in a tourist town like ours. “Their role is critical to the tourists. An enjoyable journey will make them want to come back.” Inspection of the vehicles included the verification of compliance, conditions, features and services, as well as the taxis’ documentary checks. Adeje meets the ratio of 5% of the total fleet of taxis adapted for the disabled, and Dolado added: “This is a public service and is especially sensitive to people from all regions of the area who have some kind of difficulty.”

THE extremely popular Flappy Bird app, preloaded on mobile and tablet devices, was withdrawn last Sunday.

Since then, the app has attracted astonishing eBay bids of up to £83,000. The hit game was removed from Apple’s App Store and Google Play by Vietnamese inventor Dong Nguyen, who announced his decision on Twitter. Gamers with Flappy Bird on their mobiles are now exploiting its popularity by trying to sell their devices on eBay. And they have already attracted amazing bids, ranging from £400 to £83,000. Whether or not these offers are genuine, an eBay spokesman said the transactions were hardly likely to be allowed anyway.

Flappy Bird was one of the most downloaded mobile games of all, and a Nintendo spokesman said: “Ensuring a good customer experience is our top priority. “We are in the process of removing listings for these devices as they do not meet a number of our requirements. He added: “In particular, devices such as tablets and mobiles must be completely reset to factory condition before being sold on eBay.” The exact reason for the game’s withdrawal

is not known, but Nguyen indicated that legal issues were not responsible. Nintendo also denied claims that its legal challenge relating to the game led to its withdrawal. Spokesman Yasuhiro Minagawa told the Wall Street Journal: “While we usually do not comment on the rumours and speculations, we have already denied the speculation.” Flappy Bird, launched in May 2013, was free to download and re-

quired players to tap the screen to keep the bird flying through an endless series of pipes. But despite its simple graphics, it was seen as an extremely difficult game because most users were unable to keep the bird in the air for more than a few seconds before it hit the ground. But it proved incredibly popular, topping the free games charts on both Apple and Google’s online stores and becoming the year’s most popular mobile game to date. The official game is no longer available to download online, but it still works on mobile devices which have installed it previously. Twitter fans have been using hashtags of #RIPFlappyBird and #SaveFlappyBird, to raise awareness and encourage support for its return.

Minister targets Energy profits

BRITISH Gas prices and profits have been targeted by the Government’s Energy Minister.

Ed Davey, who suggests it might have to be broken up, said in a letter to regulators that profit margins made by the “big six” energy firms were higher than previously thought. He called on regulators to study the dominance of British Gas, which said it would participate in any discussions. Mr Davey wants a market investigation, pointing out that British Gas charged among the highest prices to domestic customers in the past three years. If regulators find evidence of a monopoly, this could see a company being broken up. British Gas has 41% of the domestic gas supply market, which is the

largest share of any of the big six. The company insisted that the data highlighted by Mr Davey had already been fully disclosed. For politicians over the past few months, it has been open-season for attacks on energy companies. But Mr Davey’s move, highlighting the domi-

nance of British Gas, is still seen as controversial. The figures portray a stark picture, but Labour says the Coalition had highlighted the same data weeks ago. The first annual competition review into the energy sector will be reported next month. One former competition authority boss says

regulators Ofgem, the OFT and the CMA will not enjoy the pressure. One “big six” energy firm said that the Energy Secretary was interfering in what should be an independent review. But, as part of an ongoing review, he has asked the competition authorities to investigate the profit margins.

The much-loved star died from natural causes on Monday at home in Woodside, California. A statement read: “She was surrounded by her family and caregivers. We salute her for a life of remarkable achievements as an actor, as a diplomat, and … our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.” Shirley was the most famous child star of all, appearing in her first film as a three-year-old and going on to make Bright Eyes (when she was five), Stand Up

and Cheer and Curly Top among others, which shot her to international stardom and acclaim. She was married twice, retiring from the screen at 22 to raise her children, although she later appeared on TV as an actress and entertainer until 1965. Shirley then spent many years as a political diplomat, and received a SAG (Screen Actors’ Guild) Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.

America’s most ‘Britain should generous couple lose their Marbles’

A M E R I C A’ S joint-top 2013 philanthropists are Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan.

The couple were acclaimed following a donation of 18 million Facebook shares worth more than (£590m), to a Silicon Valley foundation.

It was America’s largest donation of the year, beating regular US philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates. The Zuckerberg couple donated the huge sum to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, which manages and distributes charitable funds. The shares have helped make the foundation one of the largest in the US, according to

the country’s Chronicle of Philanthropy. They have donated about 36 million Facebook shares to the foundation in the last two years, and these funds have been distributed to education and health causes. Those heading the list previously, such as Microsoft co-founder Gates and his wife, have always adhered to their pledges made in previous years.

HOLLYWOOD legends George Clooney and Bill Murray have called for the Elgin Marbles to be returned to Greece. The treasured, classical sculptures have been in Britain for almost 200 years after being taken from Athens by Lord Elgin in the early 19th century. They were acquired by the British Government in 1816 and have been in the British Museum ever since. Clooney and Murray, currently publicising their new film, The Monuments Men, were asked about the Marbles. Murray said: “They’ve had a very nice stay here, certainly. London’s gotten crowded. There’s plenty of room back there in Greece. “England can take the lead on this kind of thing - letting art go back where it came from.” He added in his trademark, deadpan style: “The Greeks are nothing but generous. They would loan it back once in a while.” In their new film, the

actors play members of an Allied team tasked with retrieving artworks looted by the Nazis. The controversial subject first arose at the Berlin Film Festival when a Greek reporter asked Clooney about the Marbles. Last week, during a press conference at the National Gallery, Clooney said: “In Berlin, it was one in about 100 questions at a press conference, from a Greek reporter, and I said I thought it was probably a good idea if they found their way back. “Apparently, I got in trouble for

saying that and I had to do a little research to make sure I wasn’t completely out of my mind. “Even in England, the polling is in favour of returning the Marbles. The Vatican returned parts of it, the Getty returned parts of it. There are certain pieces you look at and think, ‘That would perhaps be the right thing to do’.” In 2012, fellow actor Stephen Fry also campaigned for their return saying: “Let’s be a classy country and return the Marbles to Greece. We would be admired by the rest of the world.”

Missing for over 20 years Missing ‘shed’ boy still sought after A £20,000 reward has been offered for information about the disappearance of a London teenager 26 years ago.

Police fear Lee Boxell, then 15, was killed after witnessing child abuse - or even being sexually assaulted himself, in Cheam. Met Police officials admit they were aware of paedophile activity in that area when Lee disappeared. The youngster, who would have had his 41st birthday this week, used to attend an unofficial youth club in an out-building at St Dunstan’s Church in Church Lane, known locally as the “shed”. Teenagers used to meet there to drink and smoke, and Lee might have gone there to meet friends on the day he

went missing, on Saturday, 10th September 1988. Det Insp John Mc-

Quade said: “We hope the offer of this reward may encourage people who have not previously

felt able to come forward to now do so. “We are still appealing for any victim of sexual assault around that time, linked to the area or the shed, to contact us in confidence.” His disappearance sparked the Met Police Service’s longest-ever forensic archaeological dig, with police spending a year excavating St Dunstan’s churchyard – to no avail. Lee’s father, Peter, said: “We, Lee’s family, need answers to what happened to Lee. Someone in this community can give us those answers. Please help us bring Lee home.” Mr Boxell has released a recording of a song called Where Is Lee? which he sang in December at the Missing People Carol Service, hosted by former TV newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald.

New probe into young mum’s disappearance POLICE investigating the disappearance of a young mother 22 years ago have been searching a small area of land and woods. Officers from West Midlands Police have cordoned off a site on the nature reserve at Binley, Coventry, in connection with Nicola Payne, who went missing on 14th December 1991. And specially-trained search officers have been combing the area. Ms Payne went missing after leaving on foot from her home in Coventry. Despite extensive inquiries, the 18-year-old Ms Payne, who had a sevenmonth-old baby son, has never been seen again. Detective Inspector Martin Slevin, who is leading the investiga-

tion, said: “The area of land being looked at is as a result of ongoing inquiries into the disappearance of Nicola. “At this stage, it is a preliminary search of an area of interest to us.” Two 49-year-old men and a woman, aged 51, who were arrested in December 2013 in connection with the investigation, remain on police bail while inquiries are ongoing. The arrests followed a high-profile appeal by local police, and Ms Payne’s family are aware of the latest developments.

The Ferguson Files

By Joe Ferguson

WAT C H I N G television in the UK has become one huge pain. But don’t worry this is not another review.

But as if the British population are not obsessed with the weather enough, it really has gone into total overdrive. Gone are the days when you wanted to watch the news you got it. And then, after that, a two-minute update on how much rain there’ll be the next day. That’s all changed over the last, longest two months in history. Now, whichever channel on normal telly you decide to catch up on the day’s events, you get 25 minutes of weather and a little update on what’s happening in the world afterwards. We now know the story by heart of the flooding on the south coast of England. We know every person in every village because they’re never off our screens, saying the same thing on a repetitive loop. Yes, whenever the flooding started, you

14th February 2014 - 20th February 2014

Water, water everywhere!

would watch and tut to yourself, thinking: “I couldn’t go through that.” Then as the rain fell and fell and then fell again, and the residents of whichever place even Dick Turpin didn’t bother to pillage, I was starting to feel that maybe it wasn’t so much the rain but the tears everyone seemed to be shedding. The shouts of “we knew this was going to happen sooner or later” fell on these deaf ears. They knew it was going to happen? Then why didn’t they do something about it? But it seems so easy to elbow blame on others. The

Government gets the full brunt of this and, as much as I’m not a fan of any government, why should they take it? But obviously, they did. We hear that rivers are going to be dredged to stop them from overflowing, and, according to the Prime Minister, money is “No object” and will be made available ASAP for those affected. At a time when cancer patients have to pay thousands for treatment, you’d think this would be more important. But as this all proves now, bricks and mortar are first in line over someone’s life. The turnaround has

been unbelievable. But what happens next is the very thing that makes my blood boil. They have the work on the rivers, the money coming in boatloads (pun intended). And Sky News camped in a makeshift hovercraft so they can all be at the first raindrop, don a Norman Wisdom-style flat cap, wellies - and a camera person ready to go live and show the nation. Is this good enough? Not on your welly (pun again intended). The flooding will start all over again because the cries of “Too little, too late” are making even those who had full

sympathy of what was going on seeing red now. Nothing is going to be good enough as far the residents are concerned. And I’m now in the majority of those whose thoughts are on other things, including watching paint dry just to get away from all of it. So before I put it out of my mind forever, leave it to me to come up with a few ideas to help these people along the way. First off, after the riv-

ers are all dredged, buy sandbags. In fact, buy shares in them. Then, next year, when you know it’s going to happen again, surround the village in them and watch as your share prices sky-rocket. One thing I would definitely buy into is a calendar and a bright-red marker pen. Then circle October to April and remember: that’s winter! The time of rain, snow and wind. As it’s too late to do anything now, every villager will have a gettogether and collect money to buy a couple of killer whales and a school of dolphins, rope a square-mile radius off - and sell tickets for a new water park! But the most valuable advice I can truly give you takes no time at all. It’s only one word, but it’s what we are all shouting at the TV every time we see your faces on the news. And that word is … MOVE!

X Factor in black and white IT seems weird talking about the X Factor so early in the year. It’s supposed to be mentioned only in August, which, as we know, is the official start to the run-up to Christmas. Looks like it will be a good one this year as Simon Cowell is back. But this is a different piece on the talent show. Earlier this week, Irish actor and comedian Chris O’Dowd gained the attention of Cowell for saying: “The viewers are racist because they consistently vote to eject the best black singers.” O’Dowd told Radio Times: “I’m a big X Factor fan. Generally, my favourites go out in the first

few weeks and, of course, because the viewing public is so racist, all the black, strong singers go out in round five every year.”

Simon Cowell’s talent search has produced a number of black stars, including Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke, who won the public

vote by an overwhelming margin in 2006 and 2008 respectively. Simon has hit back saying, O’Dowd is “ignorant” and “insult-

ing” because of his comments. “We are the least racist show you could possibly find in the world, so not only is he ignorant, it’s actually insulting to hear him say that. And it’s insulting to our audience.” The producers of the show love this sort of stuff because the run-up to the show can be more exciting than the actual product, as we experienced last year. But maybe there’s a hint of truth in O’Dowd’s statement. Yes, there is a minority of people watching the show, black and white, who will never vote for anyone of a different skin colour from their own because they are morons.

I never vote unless I really do hear somebody completely original. But over the last few years on this show, it has been getting harder and harder. Originality had gone out the window because these are the facts: white male copies Robbie Williams, white female copies Adele; Black male copies Stevie Wonder and black female copies Whitney Houston. So it seems that if you wanted to look into it deeper and be really picky, you could even say the singers could be open to criticism of being racist. But then that would be totally ridiculous. Wouldn’t it?

Jonathan Edwards presents the latest action from the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. The men’s skeleton begins, with Kristan Bromley looking to end his long career with an Olympic medal, the only major honour to have so far eluded him. Team-mate Dom Parsons has shown some impressive form on the World Cup circuit in the season, and could be Team GB’s best hope of getting on the podium. As a host competitor, Russia’s Alexander Tretiakov will have had plenty of practice on the Sochi track, so the current world champion could give the local crowd something to cheer about, while Latvia’s Martins Dukurs will also be among the favourites. The women’s aerials also takes place. Australia’s Lydia Lassila is the reigning champion but has taken some time out since Vancouver to have a child. In her absence Xu Mengtao has been the standout performer and the Chinese skier should start as favourite.

Tony Robinson sets off on his most curious walk yet, across the ancient and turbulent kingdom of Northumbria. In the seventh century, at the height of the Dark Ages, the rule of Northumbria stretched from Edinburgh to York: a mighty power in post-Roman Britain. But this was a land where a battle was raging for the souls of the people. Over five days, from Melrose in the Scottish Borders to Holy Island off the coast of Northumberland, Tony is on the trail of one of Northumbria’s greatest sons: Saint Cuthbert. Through the Tweed Valley and across the Cheviot Hills, it’s a journey through a murky history laden with myth. But by investigating the communities, power bases and landscape of seventh-century Northumbria, Tony aims to understand the pagan land in which Cuthbert spread his simple brand of Celtic Christianity.

Wanted Down Under Revisited 13:00 ..........................BBC News 13:15 ....................Bargain Hunt 14:00 ..........The Indian Doctor

Mr Selfridge ITV1, 21.00 Agnes (Aisling Loftus) has now moved into Miss Mardle’s (Amanda Abbington) house. As they eat breakfast, Agnes receives a letter from George (Calum Callaghan) from the front telling her all is well. A tentative knock at the door reveals Miss Mardle’s new lodger. Instead of the female Belgian refugee she was expecting Miss Mardle is taken aback to find an extremely handsome male refugee named Florian (Oliver Farnworth). The new Defence of the Realm Act means that lights across London will now go out at night – including the landmark Selfridge’s shop windows. Gordon (Greg Austin) can’t stop thinking about the Selfridge lads now out on the front; he wishes he could fight. Rose (Frances O’Connor) finds it difficult too; she wishes she could do more. Meanwhile, Henri (Gregory Fitoussi) gets a frustrating and mysterious telephone call from Webb (Philip Rosch) who still has no results or new information for him… With so many of the Selfridge men off fighting in the war, women have been employed to fill their roles. There are teething problems in the loading bay as their clothes aren’t practical, and some will need to be taught to drive. Crabb (Ron Cook) is a bit crabby about it all, and it turns out that he’s approaching a ‘special’ birthday and feeling a bit redundant given he’s too old to go to war. Harry (Jeremy Piven) decides to give him a challenge: to setup a training scheme of sorts. Crabb gets onto organising rifle training immediately, and with incredible enthusiasm! Rose overhears about the ‘womanly’ problems in the loading bay and offers to help straight away! She recognises corsets must be a problem and instructs Grove (Tom Goodman Hill) to produce new, lighter, more practical work clothes for the women immediately. Thackeray (Cal MacAninch) has a run in with Henri (Gregory Fitoussi) about women’s wear. Thackeray tells Henri not to lecture him about war - why’s he not fighting for his country? Delphine (Polly Walker) surprises Harry with an invite to a card game at the club. She’s heard that a position on the government’s Procurement Committee is coming up, and she knows how much Harry craves an official role in the war effort. Lord Loxley (Aidan McArdle) is suddenly awash with extra cash. He tells Mae (Katherine Kelly) he’s going to be more involved in commerce and needs her to be the perfect wife. Mae visits Selfridge’s fashion department to get new clothes but is disappointed by Thackeray’s offerings and by his insulting attitude towards her. Mae complains to Harry. Kitty (Amy Beth Hayes) goes to see Frank (Samuel West) at his office – she hasn’t seen him in a while and wants to show him what he’s been missing. They have a cheeky flirtation that results in Frank inviting Kitty on a dinner date. Miss Mardle has bought Florian a violin. She has to ask him to leave and hopes the instrument will help soften the blow. However, when push comes to shove she can’t do it! Webb has finally got some information for Henri. It’s an address, and Henri leaves to go there right away. Little does he know that that a mischievous Thackeray has overheard… Thackeray sees Henri knock on a door and speak to a woman. When Henri leaves, Thackeray approaches the door, wanting to find out what secrets Henri is hiding. When the woman tells him Henri was asking about a woman who is now in Germany Thackeray is certain Henri is up to something untoward. At Delphine’s private card game, Harry meets Lord Edgerton (Raymond Coulthard) and asks about the place of the Procurement Committee. Lord Loxley snubs Harry’s advance: the position has been filled, by someone they know and trust. A mysterious latecomer to the game arrives, a chap called Bill Summertime (Jay Villiers). Who is he? Victor is with Agnes at Miss Mardle’s house. Uncle Gio left him the restaurant and Victor wants Agnes advice. Agnes tells him she thinks it’s worth the risk. Victor uses the opportunity to ask if there’s still anything between Agnes and Henri. When Harry returns home from the card game he tells Rose that he won. The chemistry between them sparks and she lets him into her bedroom for the first time in many years.

In the final programme Hugh visits Norway. Once one of the poorest countries in Europe, Norway is now the fourth richest in the world, thanks to its oil reserves and £500 billion in the bank. Hugh meets up with local chef Christopher Haatuft and joins some fishermen as they net some rather aggressive Monkfish. He visits a few fjords, joins local oil workers on an emergency rescue rehearsal, and tries some smoked sheep’s head. He meets the people behind Norway’s ‘slow TV’ craze and the Ylvis brothers, who made the viral hit The Fox Song. Hugh also visits Bastoy prison, which looks more like a holiday camp, and flies to the village of Nordskot in the arctic circle to go diving for sea urchins and to cook a Scandinavian feast.

The River Wild Channel 5, 19:00

Fast-paced action thriller in which a young family on a white-water rafting adventure in Montana are taken hostage by a pair of dangerous fugitives. The rafting holiday turns into a nightmare when two armed killers take control and try to force the mother, a proficient rafter, to use her skills to help them to escape down the treacherous rapids.

Britain’s Great War BBC1, 21.00 Jeremy Paxman In the final part of his landmark series, Jeremy Paxman describes how the country comes terrifyingly close to defeat in the last year of the war. Grieving parents hold séances to contact their dead sons, surgeons battle to rebuild the faces of the wounded and a maverick MP tries to pin the blame for the crisis on a conspiracy of sexual deviants in government. Dramatically, the tide of battle turns and exhausted Britons find themselves weeping for joy as the armistice is signed. The nation begins to count the cost of four years of war; there have been some surprising winners as well as losers. The BBC’s centenary programming will explain why the First World War happened, commemorate and remember those involved, shine a light on what it was like to live through this cataclysmic event in world history, and interrogate and debate just what its legacy has meant for modern society.

Ten of the country’s best home sewers face three challenges to make or alter an item of clothing under intense time pressure. Each week, their creations are judged by Savile Row’s Patrick Grant and sewing expert May Martin, until one of them is crowned Britain’s best amateur sewer. The first episode tests the sewers on the three core fabrics in a dressmaker’s cupboard: cotton, wool and silk. The Pattern Challenge tasks the sewers with making a simple tunic top out of straightforward cotton. In the Alteration Challenge the sewers demonstrate their ability to transform a plain high street woollen skirt in just 90 minutes. How China Fooled The World BBC2, 21.00

Robert Peston Robert Peston travels to China to investigate how this mighty economic giant could actually be in serious trouble. China is now the second largest economy in the world and for the last 30 years China’s economy has been growing at an astonishing rate. While Britain has been in the grip of the worst recession in a generation, China’s economic miracle has wowed the world. Now, for BBC Two’s award-winning strand This World, Peston reveals that China’s economic miracle is over, and examines the likelihood of a fully fledged financial catastrophe. Robert travels to Wuhan, a city of 10 million people in the heart of China. He meets the mayor of Wuhan, who reveals that in the next five years they plan to spend £200 billion on redeveloping the city. That is more than double what we in the UK will spend for the entire country. But Robert reveals the origins of the spending boom actually lie in the recession we’ve been experiencing in the West.

Manchester City v Barcelona. Manchester City and Barcelona have both scored over 100 goals already this season, so expect plenty of attacking flair on show as the two teams meet in the first leg of the last sixteen. City are playing in the knockout stages of the competition for the first time, but their home form has been impressive this season and they will be looking to take a lead back to the Nou Camp for the second leg. Adrian Chiles is joined by Roy Keane, Lee Dixon and Roberto Martinez for live coverage from the Etihad Stadium.

Sexting Teacher Channel 4, 22:00

Sexting Teacher carefully tells the stories of three teacher-pupil relationships in the age of social media and smartphones, starting with a dramatic reconstruction of the most recent case to hit the headlines. Guitar-playing maths teacher Jeremy Forrest ran away to France with a 15-yearold pupil. He is currently serving a prison sentence. All three cases in this Cutting Edge documentary led to the conviction of the teacher and had a tumultuous effect on the lives of those involved.

Jermain Defoe: Sports Life Stories ITV1, 23.35

England striker Jermain Defoe talks to Leon Mann about the highs and lows of his career, from scoring for the national team at the World Cup to the deaths of his half-brother, father and cousin within a short space of time. With contributions from England and Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard, Jermain’s former boss Harry Redknapp, as well as family members, this programme provides a close insight into a footballer who went from a council estate in Stratford to scoring at a World Cup and in the Champions League. After starting at the well-known Senrab youth team in Wanstead, he controversially moved to West Ham from Charlton, aged 16. Jermain trained with his boyhood hero Ian Wright, who was by then at the East London club and Frank Lampard, who was at the club when he joined, explains ‘Wrighty’s influence: “He was a young, confident, buzzy kid, he had a bit of the Ian Wrights about him. Ian Wright was at West Ham at the time and you could see Jermain’s eyes open up and follow him.” But when West Ham were relegated in 2003, Jermain handed in a transfer request less than 24 hours after their demotion was confirmed. He expresses regret about his actions: “To this day I can imagine West Ham fans look at me and think, ‘Who does he think he is? How can you do that? You’re a Judas.’ And It’s quite sad really because I can honestly say I still love that club.” Jermain also speaks about moments when headlines about his goals on the back pages have been overshadowed by his love life in the front of newspapers.

Jonathan Edwards presents live coverage from the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. The men’s curling competition reaches the semi-final stages and, having missed out on a medal at Vancouver 2010, Team GB will want to be involved. Skip David Murdoch won World Championship bronze in 2013, so arrived in Sochi as one of the favourites to appear on the podium. The men’s ice hockey tournament has now moved into the quarter-final stage, meaning the sport’s heavyweight nations are closing in on a place in the final four. Canada won Olympic gold on home soil in 2010, a feat current hosts Russia will hope to emulate in Sochi. There are also updates from the speed skating and the biathlon, with gold medals at stake in both.

Entertainment

By Jamie Drew EVERY month throughout 2014, Canarian Weekly will print a “Life Story” about artistes who have had a long career over here, as well as in the outside world.

It is often forgotten, or simply unknown, that certain entertainers have had an interesting life within their own showbiz role. Today, we look at a career spanning almost three decades, and a man who has dedicated his working life to music, specialising in many different genres and exploring all areas of the industry. Even while at primary school, he was always the DJ at the school disco, and he often reminisces about the early days and vinyl records at 45rmp, costing just 30 pence. At the age of 17, DJ Snoopy, real name Jamie McDowall, began his DJ career in Scotland with a gig at The Metro club in his hometown. Saltcoates is a coastal town in Northern Ayrshire and, though it was a small town, it housed one of the biggest clubs in Scotland at the time.

LIFE STORIES:

DJ SNOOPY Snoopy, a humble man, always considers this start as a lucky break. Well, breaks don’t get luckier than this one. During his time at The Metro, he got to work with some major names, such as Moby, Prodigy and Shades of Rhythm. When such an artiste gets to work with big names like this, it is no surprise that the next step for DJ Snoopy was a record release. It wasn’t long before he set up Badass Records in 1990 - a label which is still active today and promos Snoopy’s work via You Tube. Before leaving Scot-

WHAT’S NEW!

OVER the last year, I have reviewed most of the new artistes who have arrived here and gone on to great success. Comperes Andy P & Maggsy are still doing well in their respective bars. Lisa Bridge, from Stalybridge, arrived eight months ago and is hugely popular on the circuit, both on and off stage. Jacqui Peters has had a full diary since she got here six months ago with her show, A Musical Salute to Dame Shirley Bassey. And not forgetting Paul Hazel, whose reputation as a stage hypnotist has grown from strength to strength

14th February 2014 - 20th February 2014

and driven confidence back into the minds of venue owners about stage hypnosis. This brings me to Darren Clarke. He is a male singer from the northeast of England and is an exceptional vocalist. It is this, coupled with bucket-loads of stage presence and the cheeky-chappy persona which naturally flows from him that will ensure his success in Tenerife. For many years, Darren has worked all over the UK as a vocalist in duos and bands, as well as performing his solo work. In fact, Tenerife singer Paul Monroe and Darren worked together for

land, he released his first EP on vinyl, followed by a 12in party break record for DJ use, both of which were available in HMV and other reputable record stores. Nowadays, Snoopy produces party breaks and remixes for DJs to use, and a simple Google search for Badass records will direct you to all his past and recent work. House music is where most DJs begin. But in life, you can’t build a house without a good foundation - and this DJ has it in abundance. His early start in the biz gave him the confidence to leave Scotsome time on the UK circuit, producing some amazing harmonies and rearrangements of popular songs. And this is how I met him, Darren joined Paul on the stage at The Highland Paddy recently and the result was fabulous. Although it’s been years since these guys have worked together, their chemistry and vocal blend are top drawer. Darren Clarke is available for bookings as a solo artiste, but I am also told that there is a possibility of collaboration between these two guys, so there maybe a new vocal harmony duo to write about soon. Watch this space. Welcome to Tenerife Darren.

land and try pastures new. His move to Tenerife came 22 years ago and, untll that point, House music was his chosen genre. When asked about his favourite genre to work with, he explained that when he arrived, a bar called Soul Train had just opened on Starco. And, having been locked into a genre for so long, Snoopy fancied a change. He tells me that Hip Hop, R & B and Reggae music had always been his secret passion, so, the transition began and a brand-new DJ Snoopy was born. Since then, he has stuck with those styles

- and although House music was his foundation, his passion now lies in R & B. Snoopy has established himself in Tenerife’s Tramps Nightclub, and has spent six years there. A while ago, Tramps split the venue into three rooms, offering different genres of music, and Notorious is the room specialising in R & B. This is where you will find DJ Snoopy between the hours of 11pm and 3am or, occasionally, on the late shift between 3-6am. Also, he has not completely closed the door on House, and covers other DJs in The Main

Arena regularly. Last year, DJ Snoopy was voted Best DJ at the Tenerife Entertainments Awards. It was a well-deserved accolade and he received the biggest cheer of the day when his name was announced. He is in a class of his own, without doubt. His family are very proud of what he has achieved and have always supported his work. DJ Snoopy will continue to succeed, both behind the decks and with other on-going projects. And it is inspiring to have such experience and talent working here on the Island.

IT seems a far cry from when The Brit Awards first began, back in 1977.

Shirley Bassey won Best Female Artiste and Cliff Richard won a gong in the male category. Robbie Williams holds the record for the most Brit Awards, his trophy cabinet housing 16. His last one was in 2010, when he picked up the Outstanding Contribution award. As the years have passed, each ceremony has provided viewers with some amazing live performances, which have sometimes been shrouded in controversy after the antics of certain artistes. Who will ever forget Jarvis Cocker’s stage invasion in 1996 during Michael Jackson’s performance of his hit Earth Song. What will it bring this year? Only two of the awards are down to a public vote and those are Best British Single, which is a vote by Radio 1 listeners, and the Best British Breakthrough

Act. The rest are all decided by music industry executives. This year’s best single is a two-horse race between Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding’s I Need Your Love and Passenger, with Let Her Go. Other songs in the running are Dear Darling by Olly Murs and Love Me Again by John Newman. Both are great songs, but the popularity of Passenger should prove too much for the other nominees. Then again, it’s a public vote and is difficult to predict. The industry votes in other categories are quite predictable. The Best British Female Solo Artiste has the usual suspects: Jessie J, Laura Mvula, Ellie Goulding,

Birdy and Laura Marling. Ellie is streets ahead on this one, with Laura Mvula second favourite. Yet she is the least favourite to win in the Breakthrough Act category. There are three categories which involve non-British artistes and these are: Best International Solo Male/Female and Best International Group. Daft Punk are what the buzz is all about within the group category, but this award could go to Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who had huge success last year with Thrift Shop and Can’t Hold Us. The Solo Male award will undoubtedly go to Bruno Mars. For the girls, Lorde

is the bookies’ favourite to win, with the only threat in this category coming from the mighty Lady Gaga. Best British Group should be taken away by Bastille after the huge success of their 2013 hit Of The night. The Best British Male is a tougher call. David Bowie is in the running after his comeback, but two artistes stand out in this category - John Newman and Jake Bugg. However, when you are up against someone like Bowie, you really have no chance of winning an award. The 34th Brit Awards ceremony will be held at the O2 Arena on Wednesday (19th Feb) and is again hosted by actor James Corden.

A Senior View

By Monica Dyson WE’VE been in Tenerife for four weeks escaping the English weather, and now we’re back home.

Every morning we woke up, glad to actually wake up at our age, to be honest, looked at the sun and thought how good retirement was. It’s okay for some to be able to go away like that, you might say, and I’m not generalising here, but I adhere to the theory that it is possible. With a bit of careful, financial, retirement planning, good health, a sense of adventure and, of course, a like-minded companion, you can do it. And you don’t have to ask your neighbours to water your garden at this time of the year! Judging from the number of grey heads in Tenerife, much more than at a Daniel O’Donnell concert, going away at this time has been a possibility for many pensioners. And from the number of budgie-smugglers on the beaches, it’s happening with oldies from all over Europe, although that mode of swimwear is definitely not flattering on the older man! Or the younger either, come to think of it! And when we came through security at the airport, the noise was like Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells with the artificial metal replacement joints soundingoff. And yes, I was one of those! We really must be the first generation to take advantage of the cheap flights and accommodation in the winter months for extended stays. My way of thinking about it is that you offset the cost against heating, lighting, telephone and car expenses. But should we be spending our children’s inheritance this way? A new study claims that pensioners are increasingly unwilling to sacri-

14th February 2014 - 20th February 2014

Spending the kids’ inheritance fice their quality of life in retirement in order to leave an inheritance to their children. The research has revealed a shift away from the traditional desire, and that held by our parents’ generation, to leave significant assets to family and, thereby, trying to save as much money as possible to pass on. Is this something that our children will hold against us, or will they rather that their parents enjoyed retirement than doing without in old age? The study found that 61% of established pensioners would not be prepared to sacrifice their own lifestyle to make sure that they leave money to their children when they die. And, of course, in many cases they have property to leave anyway, unless that is swallowed up by carehome fees! Yet those approaching retirement seemed to be more worried about the state of their finances than they thought they would be. It could mean that not only were they reluctant to think about saving very much of the bit they would get, but apprehensive that their retirement would not be quite as comfortable as they thought it would be. It would seem that only 51% of those prospective pensioners expect to feel “comfortable” when they retire, with 33% expecting to live on the state pension alone, with no savings in workplace or private pensions. Certainly not able to think about holidays, extended or otherwise. My parents’ generation worried that they would not leave any money behind, especially for funeral costs, and they would do without rather than not have a “bob or two” in the bank. It was usual to take out an insurance policy, with the insurance agent calling each

week to pick up the payments, which could be as little as one penny per week. If they were very lucky, they could afford to pay a year’s premium up front. Very often, the agent would be “The Man from the Pru”. In 1854 the Prudential Insurance Company, being one of the biggest in the country, started a relatively new concept of selling policies to lower-income, working-class families, through door to door salesmen. Legendary in England, The Man from the Pru was regarded with the same reverence as the local doctor or bank manager, almost part of the family. I even heard of a case where the insurance man knew where the key to the house was left, let himself in if the house were empty, took the payment, signed the book and let himself out again! Such was life in those days that there was a spare key left outside most homes, usually under plant pots, or, in the case of my mother, under a stone beside the back door! There was an advertisement for the Prudential running in newspapers through

the Forties and Fifties, which depicted the five ages of men, going from a young man starting his career and

saying cheerily, “they say the job isn’t pensionable’, through to his retirement, when he says with worry: “I

really don’t know what I’m going to do without a pension.” Nothing changes, does it? The funny thing about the early insurance policies was that they rarely seemed to come to light after the death of your parents. It must have been that at some time of financial need, they were cashed in, which would have been an extreme step, given how anxious they were to leave something behind. And if these policies were ever found, they were certainly never enough to pay the cost of a funeral. With our generation, if there is something left in the pot to leave the kids after you’ve enjoyed life to the full, then that will be a bonus. But I don’t think it should be considered one of life’s obligations.

The apple of love By Margaret Tully VA L E N T I N E ’ S Day is upon us again today (Friday 14th) and the French are synonymous with being the most romantic people.

Centuries ago, the French named the humble tomato Pomme D’amour, meaning Apple of Love. The reasoning behind this is said to be because it belongs to the nightshade (Solanaceae) family, just like the mandrake (Mandrakora), which was always known as the “love plant”. That’s because its red fruits, which look like small tomatoes, are said to be aphrodisiac. The mandrake has lots of myths and legends surrounding it, but I believe it is safe to say: “Don’t eat any part of this plant!” Other nightshade plants include the potato (Solanum tuberosum), aubergines (Solanum melongena), chilli and bell peppers (Capsicum) and the lesser-wellknown tomatillo (Physalis philadelphica). The Solanum vespertilio, known commonly as Rejalgadera, has purple flowers that turn into little, red, tomatolike fruits, which, to be on the safe side, are not edible. The Datura plants, growing wild and cultivated, are also from the family of nightshades. They are steeped in witch’s lore and have

white, trumpet-shaped flowers. They come in dwarf plants or great trees and vines - and, it seems, they adapt to their surroundings. Here in the Canaries, edible tomatoes are grown en-masse for export to other countries such as the UK and are, therefore, a successful crop to grow. I know that in some of the Canary Islands, they still dump lots of tomatoes on to open farmland. There is a complicated reasoning behind this but, on a positive note, the goats enjoy them! I enjoy growing tomatoes - not because I get a free bounty of beautiful fruits, but because they grow so easily. And as my garden is a labour of love, it is always nice to have the regular plants you just know will work. Last year, my husband had a go at growing tomatoes because he grew them successfully in-

doors when we lived in the UK. He sowed a whole packet of seeds and they all came up. Yes, I should have thinned them out - and I did. But I replanted the thinnings - couldn’t bear to kill them. In the end, there were too many plants and I ended up having to look after them. But mould set in because there was not enough air-flow between plants. And, to complicate matters, the pests were unmanageable and just took over. This year, I intend to grow just eight plants, allowing for two to be unsuccessful. In the

end, I hope to have six healthy, strong, fruitbearing plants from which I can harvest my tomato bounty. I will keep you informed. If you’ve never grown tomatoes before, you must give it a go, because it really is exciting to watch them grow - and here’s how you go about it: *Fill a three-inch plant pot with multi-purpose compost and sow finely, just covering the seeds with a thin layer of compost on top *Sit in a tray of water until top of soil is wet; take out of water tray and put in a sunny position

*Once the seedlings start to show, thin out to leave those which look the strongest *As soon as the seedlings have four true leaves, re-pot each one into its own 3in pot of compost *Grow the seedlings on until they are strong plantlets, and then repot again into their final position *You can either grow them in large plant pots, around 8-10in pots with deep height or, my preferred method is three plants to one grow-bag *Site the grow-bag on the ground in a sheltered but sunny spot. *Pierce one side of the unopened compost bag to allow for drainage, and lay this side flat on to the ground *Slash three kissshaped crosses on to the top side of the bag and fold back the plastic, so you have made three pockets into which the plants go *Plant them in the bag If you are growing nonbushy, or dwarf varieties, you don’t need to stake them. But if you are growing a tall variety, then the best way to do this is by using bamboo canes. If you create a six-cane arch over the growbag, tie string from the plants to the join at the top of the canes. The plants will grow up the string, and you can wind them around as they grow. Then, once they reach the desired height, nip out the top of the plant to prevent it growing any taller. You can also nip out any side-shoots from the tall varieties. This makes for larger fruits, but fewer.

Pests and diseases are, increasingly, causing the non-chemical-using gardener more and more headaches, but companion planting is a good solution. Alongside your tomatoes, grow French Marigolds (Tagetes patula) to deter whitefly, and either Basil, Chives or Mint to deter aphids. By growing these plants with your prized tomatoes, they should be relatively free from pests. And if you learn from my mistakes and grow a small number, you will have time to remove any offending pests or diseases as the plants grow. As soon as you see the flowers appearing on your tomatoes, jump for joy and make sure they get pollinated by insects; or a little soft paintbrush. Water in abundance while fruits are growing and, consistently, this will prevent the fruits splitting if they get too much water one day and none the next. Keep the temperature of the plants steady, and if you feel the nighttime temperature is a lot colder than the day, put a little, thin, garden blanket over them at night. There are so many different varieties of tomato, and they are not all loved-up red. They come in yellow and purple - and there is even an almost-black tomato. There are small tomatoes, large ones and, in fact, all types and sizes of plants for any situation. But whatever the size, there is such joy in sampling your own tomatoes. Trust me!

SOW IT… GROW IT… TASTE IT Ingredients 1kg tomatoes 1 lge onion Small amount of vegetable oil 2 sprigs fresh basil (leaves only) 2 lge potatoes 1 chicken or vegetable stock cube Black pepper Method *Remove the skins

Thick, non-dairy Tomato Soup from tomatoes. Do this by plunging tomatoes into boiling water and letting it cool enough to put your hands in it. Skins should just peel off *Fry an onion in a tiny amount of vegetable oil, then cut tomatoes into chunks and add

them to the pot with the onions. *Continue to cook them to soften them *Add two sprigs of basil leaves. Don’t add the stalks; break the leaves rather than chop them. *Peel two large potatoes, chop into

small cubes and add them to the pot as well. *Boil kettle of water and pour over sautéed vegetables until you cover them. You can always add more water later if it seems too thick. *Turn heat down

to simmer and add stock cube (chicken or vegetable). Stir to dissolve and put a lid half on the pot. *Add black pepper but no salt as there should be enough in the stock cube (you can taste when all vegetables

are cooked down). *Allow to simmer for some time, then put lid on pot fully and leave to infuse. It will be best eaten the next day - simply heat and serve. The potato gives it a thick, creamy consistency without the need for fattening creams.

By Val Sainsbury A NEW drug could save thousands of lives a year by stopping breast cancer spreading to other organs.

A team of British scientists have revealed that suppressing a gene in the body could help prevent the spread by up to 80%. Metastasis, the growth of secondary tumours elsewhere in the body, such as in the liver, brain and lungs, hits up to 12,000 women a year in the UK and is the chief reason why cancer victims die. There have been great improvements in treat-

MANY people are left with ringing in their ears after a night out at a club, gig or pub.

Campaign group Action on Hearing Loss said the poll of 1,000 adults also showed a third would ignore the “safe level” on their music players. The group warns that people doing either increase the risk of tinnitus. DJ Paul Oakenfold urged people to wear ear defenders to gigs and to “turn down the volume”. Half of those surveyed said they listened to music for between one and six hours a day - up to a third of their waking day - perhaps in the background at work or on their MP3 player on their way to and from work or studies. But one in five would not do anything differently to take any care of their hearing. Action on Hearing Loss warned that one in 10 people across the UK is affected by tinnitus every day, ranging from a “light buzzing” to a “constant roar” in the ears and head. It can affect everything from the ability to concentrate at work to getting to sleep at night. The poll also found that one in 10 people does not know what tinnitus is,

Breast cancer breakthrough

ing the early stages of breast cancer, but there has been a lack of drugs for dealing with metastasis, which can strike several years after an initial diagnosis. Now, though, there is new hope for patients after scientists targeted the Bc13 gene, which appears to play a critical role in the spread of breast cancer. A Cardiff University team conducted computer simulations to work out how Bc13 functioned, and then blocked it using a compound identified from a “virtual library” of chemicals. Dr Richard Clarkson, of the university’s European Cancer Stem

Cell Research Institute, said: “We showed that suppressing this gene reduced the spread of cancer by more than 80%.” The next goal was to find a way to block Bc13 using drugs and, in tests on mice, the researchers first deleted the gene and then explored ways of inhibiting it. After screening thousands of chemicals, they found a compound which could target Bc13. When mice with metastatic breast cancer were treated with the drug, the spread of tumours to other parts of the body was reduced dramatically. The team have now re-

ceived financial backing from UK-based biotech company Tiziana Pharmaceuticals to develop the drug and bring it forward for clinical trials. Dr Clarkson said: “There is a clear, unmet clinical need to identify new drugs to reverse or at least to slow down disease progression.” In recent years, scientists have made several major advances in breast-cancer treatment after discovering it has many types and sub-types. Breast cancer can “flip”, or change profile during treatment and often has to be treated as a different disease. Studies continue to

find lifestyle factors and habits which alter breast cancer risk. Some researchers are looking at the effect of exercise, weight-gain or loss, and how diet can affect the risk of breast cancer. Scientists are also learning more about how genes influence breast cancer. This research should speed up now the human genome has been mapped. One recent such breakthrough in diagnosis could prevent thousands of women a year from undergoing unnecessary mastectomies. More than 4,800 women are diagnosed annually with ductal car-

cinoma in situ, where non-invasive cancerous cells are found in the milk ducts of the breast. Without treatment, which can involve full mastectomies, radiotherapy and hormone therapy, half are likely to develop invasive breast cancer. But doctors were unable to identify those women at risk. Now, though, researchers know the v6 molecule, commonly present in almost all cases, is likely to become dangerous. And this could lead to a simple test to save women from traumatic and unnecessary treatment.

Ringing in your ears?

with 3% thinking it was “big ears” and 4% a “repetitive strain injury”. It has created an audio version of what tinnitus sounds like in order to raise awareness. Paul Breckell, chief executive of Action on Hearing Loss, said: “Lis-

tening to loud music for a long time can trigger tinnitus and is an indication of damaged hearing. “Most people have experienced tinnitus, but those who are severely affected can experience fear, anxiety and feelings of helplessness that af-

fect their quality of life. “Currently there is no cure for tinnitus. As a charity we are doing all we can to fund research into treatments, and in the meantime offer support to people who suffer.” Paul Oakenfold, the

DJ and record producer, is supporting the campaign. He said: “I feel passionately about listening to music safely, and urge music lovers to wear ear defenders to gigs and avoid dangerously high vol-

umes on personal music players. “Getting decent noisecancelling headphones also cuts down the risk of damaging your ears and suffering tinnitus caused by overexposure to loud music. No-one wants that.”

GIVE YOUR SKIN A PROPER TREAT

By Stella from Robot

By Ruth Benson

DURING the course of many years, I have been trained in and have studied the latest and most modern techniques in skin and beauty care.

THE Winter Olympics are up and running in Sochi, and one thing I have noticed is the choice of team outfits on display this year.

In that time, I have developed my own range of treatments, which I am can share with you at the new Robot Beauty Studio. Modern beauty therapy is not just about traditional manicure, pedicure and waxing. Microdermabrasion is a mechanical method of removing epidermal cell layers by means of a special device with an abrasive head, covered with natural diamond particles. Although the treatment is primarily aimed at the superficial skin layers, changes occur not only in the epidermis but also in the dermis. Therefore, the method is also used in skin rejuvenation, wrinkle and scar reduction, hyperpigmentation elimination and skin purification. Diamond microdermabrasion is safe, painless and causes no allergies. The skin becomes firmer, smoother, more elastic and brighter. It regains a healthy appearance and colouring. After a series of treatments, it is recommended that the procedure is repeated from time to

time to maintain the effects. Microdermabrasion removes the dead skin cells and opens up the pores, preparing the skin’s surface perfectly for the infusion of treatment products with Sonophoresis. This is a safe, non-invasive treatment which uses ultrasonic technology, warmth and motion energy to increase significantly the depth and rate at which active ingredients can be absorbed into the deeper layers of skin. The heat generated by the ultrasound penetrates tissues, relaxes

the skin and muscles, while the deep micromassage improves blood and lymph circulation, as well as cell metabolism and regeneration. Furthermore, the emitted ultrasounds facilitate the delivery of drugs across the skin, and the treatment is pleasant and relaxing, It uses a special probe that emits ultrasonic waves of individuallydetermined intensity. The procedure is performed with the use of nutrient-containing ampoules, selected according to the skin’s individual needs.

Forget Paris, London or New York for creating new fashion ideas, all you had to do was look at the athletes during the opening ceremony. Most noticeably has been the Norwegian curling team’s Zig Zag outfit. As we know from the London Olympics in 2012, countries take time and pride in what the national team wear. In London, Great Britain used the talents of Stella McCartney. And this year, for the Winter Games, we have seen designers putting their mark on their country’s team kit. Giorgio Armani has

designed for the Italian team and Ralph Lauren is responsible for designing the US team’s knitwear. But it’s not just the high-end designers who have been asked. Sweden used the high street brand H & M to create an outfit using their patriotic flag. And Great Britain also used the flag’s colours on their adidas-designed uniform. As most people are aware, there has been some controversy over the Games. And it has been suggested that the choice of colours and design for the German

team was also making a political statement. The rainbow of blue, green, yellow, red and white drew immediate thoughts of Russia’s anti-gay statements, the rainbow being the iconic symbol of gay pride. Bermuda’s team made an impact at the opening ceremony, the athletes wearing shorts in temperatures below 40-degrees. However, the Cayman Islands outdid them by wearing not only shorts but flip-flops as well. The Canadian team’s choice of cardigans looked as though they had employed their mothers to knit them. And Russia had plenty of Pom Poms and looked very Christmassy in their design. But the one stand-out costume for me had to be that of Mexican skier Hubertus Von Hohenlohe. the country’s only representative. This will be his last Olympics, and the man is going out in style, with his ski suit taking a mariachi theme. He doesn’t believe he will win a medal, but he hopes to win the “Best Dressed” title. He certainly gets my vote!

Wine chief ’s Cabldo whine!

Gastronomic event a success

GRANADILLA Council has praised everyone connected with last year’s Gastrononic Route. The month-long, preChristmas extravaganza was a raging success. Councillor Esteban González presented gifts and certificates to 20 contestants and restaurants as a thank-you for the event, which took place from 15th November to 15th December. Esteban Gonzalez said:

“It was a great success and one that has put the event on the map.” A total of 36 bars and restaurants took part, and he added: “I must thank them for their work and the quality and innovation of tapas. This is a great showcase and is already a must on the Island. “The challenge was to find the best cuisines of the municipality, and, thanks to the imagination and skill of our chefs, this

happened. “This event enriches both the social and economic perspective of our community.” Restaurants with the most votes received, and those who received special prizes, were: Zumería El Tankito, Imperio del Pintxo and Restaurante Almogrote. Next year’s Gastronomic event is already being planned, and there will be a new and improved interactive web page and a mobile App.

JUAN Jesús Méndez, head of the Canarian winegrowers, is threatening legal action against Tenerife Cabildo.

He has accused Agriculture Minister José Joaquín Bethencourt of using political influence regarding the Island’s

wine production, and says the Cabildo’s practices are “outside the law”. Méndez, who represents around 80% of Tenerife’s wine-makers as secretary of Avibo (The Association of Winegrowers and Winemakers of the Canary Islands) believes it to be unfair competition. He says that the “Bodega Insular de Tenerife,” is, in effect, the Cabildo’s own winegrower, and that is has far greater backing than the smaller, independent wineries. Méndez, also president

of the Bodegas Viñátigo, and Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) for Quality Wines of the Canary Islands, and the wine-maker with the most productive acres on the Island, warns: “The Caboldo is wrong if it thinks that silence solves something. “We have already passed the Cabildo our complaints and demands. If, within a reasonable time there is no response, we will go to court.” But Bethencourt simply said that the Méndez claims were “disproportionate and unfair”.

Gourmetland’s Love India restaurant

You will love Love India THERE is nothing quite like going to a brand-new restaurant. Something unique, something different, somewhere you can tell your friends about.

And normally, you go in with an open mind. That was never going to be the case at Love India. Situated in the vibrant new Vulcano Gourmetland Centre behind the Safari Centre in Las Americas, Love India is the latest restaurant from Gourmetland. They have been one of the dining success stories of the decade, and Love India is their 14th restaurant. They are the team behind Embrujo, La Martina and Taurus so, instantly, you know how high the bar has been set. Love India is something a little different in their stable and, while in

many ways the food and atmosphere is inspired by the popular Oriental Garden, Love India has already developed its own niche. There are all the traditional dishes you would expect in a variety of styles and flavours. You have nearly 30 start-

ers to choose from and that’s before you have the mind-boggling amount of main courses to sample and enjoy. I always find Indian restaurants to be quite tribal. Once you have found one to suit your taste, you normally dine there time and again.

While I understand that philosophy, you are narrowing the mind because Indian dishes are so varied and open to creativity. And this is what you have at Love India. When we dined this week, we were encouraged to sample the Tandoori dishes as this is where the restaurant comes into its own. The Gourmentlandcreated Chicken Tikka and Cheese is an Island favourite now. While it’s served in other establishments, its originality lies here. The head chef was brought across from Oriental Garden and the quality shines through. The prawn puri is unique, as full king prawns are used and combined with the tasty secret special sauce. We enjoyed this with the onion baaji, which is a dish often mis-cooked. The onions need to chopped just so, and

the key is in the spice and texture. Too much and the spice overpowers the onion. Too dry and the dish needs sauce, which defeats the object. Suffice to say, Love India have it spot-on, as are their chicken samosas, which are moist and have this delicious, light, curry twang. Electing to go down the Tandoori route, it made sense to try a range of the options rather than just one or two main dishes. Tandoori cooking is an art. It takes experience and know-how to get it just right. I’ve lost count of how many places either over-paste with the sauce, which overpowers, or they keep the meat in the oven too long. Again, this leads to dryness and the need for extra sauce. That was never going to be a problem here! On our sampler we had lamb, duck, chicken breast and on the bone, along with a special king

prawn tandoori. This is a rare dish in an Indian restaurant, and it has to be tried. The Tandoor oven gives the prawn a different texture and is a proper treat. To accompany the meat, we had the pilau rice and the house special vegetable rice, which was amazing. There were also a variety of different sauces, ranging from tangy and sweet to the slightly spicier and longer lasting. They all worked in their own way and it was great to mix the meats with the sauces and the different rices, all mopped up with the must-have cheese nan. The Love India menu lends itself to sharing and exploring which, for me, is what an Indian restaurant is all about. It is a new establishment but already, all the teething snags seem to have been ironed out. The bathrooms are spotless and modern, and there is nothing to fault. The reviews on Trip Advisor are already excellent: “If you want fantastic authentic Indian food with unequalled service and value, look no further than love India in Las Americas. The ambiance is fantastic and the restaurant décor breathtaking. We were blown away by the quality, freshness and delicate flavours of the food.” “This place is fantastic. Great quality food and great flavours and very reasonable.” I couldn’t have said it better myself. For reservations, call 922 750 048

Your Fasnia refuge Emails Live Arico news

hit by robbers

Dear Editor, FURTHER to your report in the current Canarian Weekly regarding unfriendly cabbies, I have been coming to Tenerife three or four times a year for the past 10 years. Normally, I arrange for a hire car to be left for us to collect at Tenerife Sur airport, but when my wife and I arrived on time on 20th January, there was no sign of the car being there. Recently, the car hire company changed hands, so, after searching the car park for half-an-hour, we decided there had been a mix-up and went for a taxi. We have a flat in Golf del Sur. When in the cab and we told the driver where we wanted to go, he reacted as if a mad man. Throughout the journey, he shouted at us in an aggressive way. We know social Spanish, enough to get by in greeting people, and ordering food and drink. But, I think, fortunately, we did not recognise what he was shouting at us. At the end of the journey there was just a curt demand for 15 euros, no please/thank you, before he stormed off. Like the tourists you mentioned in your original story, we got the distinct impression he was angry that he was not getting a longer trip, and so he decided to take it out on us. We do not rent out our flat, but we let family, friends and work colleagues use it. When I mentioned what had happened to my office manager, she said the same thing had happened to her a couple of times. She never hires a car and has to rely on taxis. Maybe your view that “This practice is not overly widespread...” is over-generous to the taxi drivers. We know most Tenerife inhabitants are kind to visitors, but I shudder to think what a first-time visitor to the Island would think if their first contact with the locals was a taxi driver like the one we had. I imagine they would think twice about returning. Either tourism is important to the Island’s economy or it is not; if it is, then steps must be taken to stamp out rude and aggressive attitudes exhibited by some taxi drivers. Gordon Colquhoun

WE were sad to hear this week that dog food worth some 3,000 euros was taken from the Fasnia refuge, where many of our dogs still reside.

We immediately sent 1,000 to their bank account and put a call out for help. Joe and Stuart from the Market Tavern and Surrey Arms, in Los Cristianos, were quick to raise 150 euros, which we also sent to their account, as well as blankets and towels to the refuge. Anyone wanting to leave cash donations

or towels and blankets can do so at any of our shops for us to pass on. We hope the culprits are caught soon because it is tragic the depths to which some will stoop.

Dog of the Week Rip is two and has not had the best of luck so far. The Bijon cross was found in the road by one of our supporters, his coat badly matted.

So badly, in fact, that he had to be more or less completely shaved to get rid of all the burrs, ticks and parasites. Now his fur has grown and he looks very handsome. He was on trial for permanent adoption, but his potential owner sadly passed away, so now he is back in the dog hotel. Although he is happy there, we would love to see him settled in a family. He is playful, extremely sweet, and is fully vaccinated and sterilised. He is a small dog, and our usual adoption fee of 110 euros includes all his injections and chip. Call Sue on 629 388 102 for more information.

Wingate museum for whales and dolphins This week the Wingate School Hall, normally reserved for theatre productions and musicals, has been hosting a Cetacean Museum.

It has been there throughout the week so that the Infants, Juniors, Seniors and Sixth Form have been given a chance to study these unique marine species, and participate in different workshops catering to each level. The exhibition is in

English and Spanish, and is also open to parents when they come

to collect their children from school. Everyone visiting the

museum will learn a lot about marine wildlife, and there will even be some animal first-aid, so they will know what to do if they ever find a dolphin or sea turtle in distress. The sixth form will be following this up with a “Biologist for one day” trip, where they will be shown, by trained biologists, what it is like to study marine wildlife. It entails a three-hour boat trip, studying the animals who live in this unique part of the world, which is a haven for many types of Cetacean.

Lions after Charity Shop staff TENERIFE Sur Lions Club are looking for additional volunteers to help in their Charity Shops

With the continuing success of their shops in Costa Silencio and Los Cristianos, the Lions are looking for active, enthusiastic individuals to join their existing team of volunteers. The shops provide the core source of funding

for the Lions “Dream Holidays” for handicapped and disadvantaged children, both locally and the UK, as well as the club’s many other activities. They are looking for anyone who is of a reasonably fit and energetic disposition, and who can integrate into the friendly atmosphere of an existing team. They will also need to be able to give between three and four hours a day for one or two days

each week. You don’t necessarily need experience, but knowledge of and/or an experience in retail would be an advantage. The work itself is varied and ranges from evaluating and preparing donations to serving on the shop floor - with quite a lot in between! *Do you believe you fit the bill? *Do you feel you are the right person for the job? *Do you have the qual-

ifications? Then why not take the opportunity to become a Lions Volunteer and enjoy the satisfaction of making the Lion’s “Dream Holidays” and other projects part of your experience. If you are interested in working in the Silencio Shop, contact Edna on 922 732 386 and if it is the Cristianos Shop, contact Ken on 670 647 765 for an appointment, or call in to either shop for an application form.

K9’s 20th anniversary news

Please micro-chip your pets OUR 20th anniversary year proved to be an eventful one for a number of reasons, one of them being the turnover of dogs in and out of the kennels.

It really was pleasing because, at 362, this was the lowest figure for a number of years, 400+ being the norm. However, the number of missing pets brought into the kennels increased, 90% of whom were not micro-chipped, which meant that distressed dogs and distraught owners were not reunited for several weeks in some instances. Had the animals been chipped, they would have

been back together, most probably the next day. For the sake of a few euros, HAVE YOUR DOG MICRO-CHIPPED! We had fewer “fundraising events” than previously, but those we did have were well received and enjoyed by those loyal supporters who attended. The Anniversary Dogs’

Dinner at Palm Mar in September, the Christmas Dinners at Vivo and El Marquese in December, and the Sponsored Walk & “after party” also in December, (to name just four) raised muchneeded funds to care for our inmates at the kennels. Our one disappointment was not being able

Accion del Sol news

to hold our Christmas Hamper event at Iceland, in Las Chafiras, but we are so pleased that another charity did very well in our place. Our “Team Alcala” volunteers have now become the backbone of K9. Our second-hand shop in Alcala plaza has had a record year, despite all the expenses incurred in running a fullylegal operation. The Monday market stall also had a good year, as did our significantlyimproved Car Boot Sale on the last Sunday of each month in the Tipsy Terrace car park, at Los Gigantes bus station. The first function of 2014 is our annual “Get Together for K9 Volunteers & Supporters”, which is being held on Saturday, 22nd March, at The Heritage Bar in Los

Cristianos. Aidy Evans, who is again compering, will be ably assisted by a number of entertainers between 3-6pm. The event is open to everyone who has supported K9 in whatever way in the past, or would like to do so in the future. There will be a Tombola & Raffle, plus a Book Stall - and a Quiz if time allows. Further details will be added regularly to the K9 page on Facebook, and the local papers during March. If any artist is able to give 30 minutes of his/ her time, and/or anyone would like to donate something for the raffle or tombola, we would love to hear from you. Many thanks again to all those who have supported K9 over the past 20 years. The whole purpose of

our existence is to provide a safe refuge for those abandoned and abused animals which find themselves, through no fault of their own, in our kennels to await, hopefully for a forever home. Further information about K9 can be found at www.k9tenerife.com or the K9 page on Facebook. Other contact information is info@k9tenerife.com or k9mikey@ gmail.com The kennels are open every morning from 9am to help exercise the dogs, or from 11am if just looking The kennel phone numbers are 822 106195 and 667 638 468 Info regarding donations for the shop can be made to Muriel on 646 561 035 or Kenny on 686 14 1003 - or on any of the above numbers.

Saturday Club fun for everyone THE children all had great fun making cakes at our Saturday Club, and the parents later joined in playing with the latest new puppies at the refuge. This new club, open between 1-4pm on Saturdays, is already proving successful. It is open to children aged from five to 12 Accion is anxious to find good-hearted people travelling to Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, Stuttgart or Munich, who would be willing to accompany a dog on its way to a new family. All it costs is a little bit of your time, and it gives dogs a chance of a new life in Germany. Sometimes it’s easier to rehome larger breeds or special-needs dogs there than in Tenerife. Accion is completely responsible for each dog and its staff will complete the paperwork over here. On arrival at the chosen airport, staff from Aktiontier, the German charity which sponsors the refuge, will meet you and collect the animal. If you are interested and are travelling to one

of the destinations mentioned, please email acciondelsol@gmail.com or call 922 778 630 for more information. It is becoming harder and harder to find homes for the dogs over here because there are so many coming in to the refuge. Please think really carefully before allowing your pet to get pregnant because refuges in Tenerife are full of unwanted dogs. Sterilisation and castration is the real way forward to help deal with this crisis on the Island. Every single dog at Action del Sol is castrated or sterilised, so there are never any unwanted litters here. Even so, puppies have been coming into the refuge in droves. If you would like to adopt one of the many dogs or pups looking for new loving homes, please drop in and see us, or call 922 778 630 for more information. There is no fee for adopting a dog and each one is micro-chipped, inoculated, wormed and free of fleas. But a donation towards the cost of

all this work would be appreciated. Towels, sheets and blankets are always needed at the refuge, so if you have any to spare, please donate them to this worthy cause. Opening hours 2-5pm: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 1-4pm: Saturday Closed: Sunday and public holidays The refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF-1, directly next to the ecological park with the windmills. How to find us Travelling from the South, come off the TF-1 at Exit 51 and drive down towards the sea until the last roundabout (signposted ITER ) and turn right there. Before the electric barrier of ITER (parking for renewable energy) on your right is a dirt track leading to the refuge (four large, oval yellow houses). Parking is available directly by the main gate entrance. And should you get lost, head for the huge windmills, which are right next to us.

THE VW Scirocco is blowing hot again

By Jav A FACELIFT for the Volkswagen Scirocco coupe is on its way but, as with the recently updated Polo, the big changes won’t be that visible outside.

The company will not be straying far from the stylish shape first introduced in 2008, and have made subtle updates to the grille and headlights. The Scirocco is still one of the best-looking cars in the line-up, so there would be no point in VW putting off potential buyers with a radical redesign. The facelift will, no doubt, increase the car’s appeal, though, with cleaner engines, new tech, a smarter interior and some tiny chassis tweaks. Scirocco sales were down from 7,538 in 2009 to 5,029 last year. But by fitting the new 1.4 TSI ACT petrol and 2.0 TDI diesel engines from the MkVII Golf, VW will be able to slash

running costs and boost performance. Volkswagen had dropped the Scirocco R from their range because the engine did not meet Euro VI emissions rules. But the flagship will be revived, using the latest Golf R’s 296bhp 2.0 TSI. The interior will be redesigned, with topquality switchgear, steering wheel and dials from the latest Golf, plus new tech like adaptive cruise control and autobrake. A new, slicker infotainment system will also feature, offering swiping, smartphone-style gesture control and a MirrorLink system, which, in theory, lets you use any

smartphone app via your in-car screen. This revised Scirocco is likely to debut at next month’s Geneva Motor Show. And it should reach showrooms towards the end of the year It comes in five main specifications: entrylevel standard car, midspec GT, sportier RLine and GTS versions, and top-of the-range, performance-focused. special edition R. For the best balance of performance and economy, though, the GT 2.0-litre TSI petrol engine is the pick. Even though it was launched in 2008, the Scirocco still looks good - and VW last year cele-

brated hitting their one millionth sale. The German company’s Servicing Price Promise helps keep running costs down, while resale values are very strong. And they pledge to match any quotes for required work, also offering certain maintenance work for free. You’ll get the best fuel economy from the diesel Scirocco, the most efficient being the 2.0-litre TDI BlueMotion, which returns 62.8mpg in combined fuel economy and emits 118g/km of CO2. The standard 2.0-litre diesel returns 53.3mpg in economy and emits 139g/km of CO2, while the entry-level 1.4-litre TSI petrol manages

44.1mpg and emits 149g/ km of CO2. A journey in the Scirocco is always comfortable, thanks to dampers which actively adjust the firmness of the suspension, in accordance with the road surface. It also feels solid and stable, thanks to a wider chassis and more lightweight aluminium components. And even the stiffer suspensionsetting of Sport mode doesn’t make the ride feel harsh. In addition, the Comfort mode is perfect for ensuring that long motorway drives are very calm and easy on driver and passengers. There’s plenty of space inside, with a surprising amount of head and legroom in the back of the car. The driver and front passenger get very comfy bucket seats, and the strict four-seater also has two sculpted seats in the back which are also pleasing and comfortable. One drawback is that the boot offers only 292 litres of space, which is 58 litres less than the sixth-generation VW Golf on which it is based.

But the car feels beautifully crafted and solidly built, with both steering and brakes feeling weighty and responsive. It comes fitted with six airbags, electronic stability control (ESP), traction control, electronic brake force distribution and ISOFIX child-seat anchor points as standard. Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) comes as standard, tailoring the drive to almost any conditions on the road. And there’s a choice between Comfort and Sport modes. At £20,000 for starters, the Scirocco is hardly cheap. But there is lots of equipment and accessories, compared with its rivals. The entry-level model is fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels, dusk sensor, touchscreen sat-nav infotainment system, automatic windscreen wipers and auto-dimming rear-view mirror as standard. The GT also gets the Adaptive Chassis Control, 18-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, front fog lights and tinted rear windows, while the R-Line further adds 19-inch alloy wheels.

Bold look for new Peugeot PEUGEOT are planning to attack the fourdoor coupe section with the 408 GT - their dream car!

The concept version, which could go on sale in 2016, will take pride of place at next month’s Beijing Motor Show. It will be based on the 308 hatch, but will be longer, lower and wider, with a more aggressive nose. Slim headlights flow into a wider grille, as on the 2012 Onyx concept, while the boomerang tail-lamps are taken from the 2008 version of the 308. The look will help the 408 GT live up to Peugeot’s rich design heritage, which includes models like the stunning, Pinin-

farina-styled 406 Coupe. As it shares its underpinnings with the 308, this new GT model, if brought to fruition, will be based on the company’s new, lightweight EMP2 architecture.

So we can expect an almost-identical interior, with even highergrade materials to fit its more premium image. The engines will also mirror those of the 308, with a choice of 1.2 and

1.6-litre petrol turbos, delivering outputs from 128bhp to 168bhp. Diesel options will range from 1.6 to 2.0 litres, with 118bhp to 178bhp. The 408 GT is one of a trio of new models

Peugeot have in the pipeline as they bid to improve their image – and, of great importance to the company, their profit margins. An Audi Q5-sized 6008 is tipped to arrive in

concept form some time this year, tapping into the lucrative, compact SUV market, while a flagship 608 saloon will launch in 2017. All three cars will be vital to Peugeot’s increasing focus on China, which is now the world’s largest car market. Traditionally, Chinese customers have favoured large saloons - hence the 608. But with ever-tightening emissions regulations and less space on the roads in China, their taste is diversifying towards smaller, more efficient and fashionable models, such as fourdoor coupés and SUVs. The company have confirmed that the new car is from the same lineage as the Onyx Concept Car”, and says it is “a teaser of the brand’s future design”. We shall see!

Barcelona B 2 CD Tenerife 0 You can’t say I didn’t warn you last week.

Much was made of Denis Suarez’s move from Man City - and that £4 million was a lot of money. But he has settled in now and his form over the last few weeks has been excellent. He’s started to add goals to his make-up, and he will be playing at a higher level next season. Suarez was mustard on Sunday, and he could easily be the best player in the division. He is still growing - and when he has baulked up, he will be a serious player. It’s great to watch careers grow. I remember watching Tenerife play Real Madrid C a few years back. The young kid up front really caught the eye, despite not having the best of matches. I saw him a few times that year and was delighted when he made Position

nary Islands. Anyway, enough about Jese… Tenerife’s own wonderkid didn’t have the best of afternoons in front of the scouts. It’s not that he didn’t have his chances. Ayoze should have bagged a brace but, for whatever reason, it didn’t happen. This would prove costly as Barca dominated possession. And what chances Tenerife did get had to be taken. Suarez opened the scoring on 26 minutes with a fine free-kick. Roberto should have done better, and the young keeper maybe should have kept out Dani Nieto’s matchwinner 16 minutes from time. There is no doubt that Tenerife missed Ricardo in central midfield (who would have thought THAT in August), and they looked a little leggy. Edgar had a decent enough debut, while it’s clear that fellow new boy Juanjo will need some matches to get his sharpness sorted. The defeat was not

a disaster as teams around CDT took points off each other. Tenerife sit in 14th place - a win off the play-offs and four points clear of the drop. Crazy! Tomorrow (Saturday) sees one of the big fish in Santa Cruz. Real Zaragoza have been a yoyo side for a few seasons, and they are struggling to impose themselves this year. They have the squad, but something isn’t right. They looked toothless in the 1-0 defeat at Lugo last week, and their strikers are clearly suffering from a lack of confidence. They’ve scored once only in the last four matches, and Paco Herrera has a real job on his hands. The experience is there. Wily old keeper Leo Franco has seen it all before and, in Cortes and Barkero, they have men who can inspire. They have some good kids as well. Paglialuga is having his best ever season in midfield, while 19-year-old Angelo Hen-

riquez is one to watch. The Chilean is on loan from Manchester United and is well touted. He started the season with a bang, but none of his five goals has come since mid-November. But he is still a livewire, and he won the FA Cup on loan at Wigan last season! Lugo aside, Zaragoza have been excellent on the road. Recently, they won at Mirandes and, eye-catchingly, at Sporting Gijon. They’ve also won at Castilla and over the water in Las Palmas. Maybe the lack of pressure suits their game! Former Zaragoza Bteamer Aridane is in line to face his old side and should partner Ayoze in attack. It has been another week of speculation about the youngster in the papers. Depending on which paper you read, and who you trust, the following teams are going to sign him: Swansea, Liverpool, Everton, Schalke, Porto & Valencia. Meanwhile, hat-tip to Eibar, who now top the table. Like Tenerife, they came up from Segunda B last season - and they have been brilliant. Their football is not to everyone’s taste, but they have found a formula that works. They are hard to beat, especially at their tight ground. What makes their journey to the top is the fact that they are on the verge of either going bust, or into administration. It’s odds on that they will be relegated, regardless of where they finish. For the players and the fans to take this all in their stride and head a table with some genuine big guns is remarkable. I hope they survive, and that their efforts are properly rewarded.

Mick’s maximum moments! AFTER last week’s maximum no-show, no fewer than seven 180s were hit last Friday.

ed a 6-2 home victory against Target Army. Steve replied with one of his own for the visitors. Despite being on the verge of relegation, Gaffers A’s Matt managed his first maximum of the campaign. But this didn’t stop his team from losing a close match against La Caña Pirates. Ourplace Naturals put six past Target Titans as they enjoyed their first win for weeks, while Palms Sports Bar beat Ensecan by the same 6-2 scoreline. There will be a nice

Leading the way, with nine for the season, is Bar 180 A’s Mick, no doubt inspired by his recent exhibition match with world No.3 Simon Whitlock. shiny trophy for the team finishing third in Division 1 at the Presentation Night in April. Would anyone like it? It seems not! That’s because third-placed Emerald Lounge lost at home against Bar 180

B, and fourth-placed Chipeque did likewise against Barracuda Bytes. Maybe one of the Bar 180 teams will make a late surge to claim it. And if the terminator - otherwise known as Bar 180 C’s Arny - keeps up his good

form, who knows? He hit his first 180 during a 7-1 thrashing of Amistad 1. Elsewhere, Trap Door nicked the trebles to put one over Naughty Nuatas. With just 40 points left to play for, and last week’s 5-3 success at Barracuda Hunters, Tenerife Sun’s promotion from Division 2 is now guaranteed. Well done guys. But, there were mixed fortunes for the chasing pack. The Shamrocks just about managed a win at Sundowners and will surely hold on to second

place now. Young Johnny hit a 180 in La Caña Lancers’ local derby with The Rebels, which ended all-square, while Picasso’s slumped to a 6-2 home defeat against an in-form Phoenix Flights. Pas O Nada’s last-leg victory over Bar 180 D included a maximum for Steve Sub, and, after last week’s first win of the season, those Playgirls went and did it again! And against the same team! But girls, you might just have left it a bit too late to avoid the wooden spoon!

FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

ALL of a sudden, the Premier League seems to have become a very polite place to be. No one actually seems to want to win it this year.

The top three are taking it in turns to go top - when one team have been there, they promptly drop points and allow one of the others to move up. Chelsea seemed to have a hit a bit of form,

and then draw with West Brom; Man City can’t beat Norwich and as for Arsenal, who knows what is going on there at the minute! It’s no better at the other end of the table regarding a clear picture because the lower clubs are still picking up points. And this is again reflected in the Fantasy League team of the week. This time out we have representatives from Cardiff, Southampton, Swansea, Chelsea and Fulham, plus two players from Liv-

erpool, Spurs and West Ham! I can’t remember the last time a Man Utd player made the team of the week! The Oasis Fm Fantasy League still has no change at the top, with Steve Schofield’s Tenerife Hotspurs hanging on to the No.1 spot. However, the gap has been cut to just 65 points as Andy Palmer’s second-placed Premier Sat Utd take Team of the Week with a superb points total of 80. There are just 12 games left until the end

of the season, so I’m sure Steve will be constantly tinkering with his team to try to stay top. The question is, though, would winning the Oasis Fm Fantasy League come close to mending his broken heart when his beloved Man Utd finish seventh and miss out on the Champions League? There is no change in the battle of the Oasis Fm DJs. Adi Benson is still out in front, but Chris Elkington has cut the points gap and can easily catch him be-

tween now and the end of the season, Roscoe is just treading water, while Maggie Lennard is searching down the back

of the sofa for the loose change she will need to take the lads out for a steak when she picks up the wooden spoon.

Tenerife pretty in pink! WHILE the Chairman will maintain it was the “Men In Mauve”, Tenerife finally overcame Scotland in the International challenge.

The sixth annual event was again fiercely contested, but this time the results swung the way of the home side. The first night’s action was hosted by 2JZs, in San Eugenio, and it was swiftly evident that our lads were up for it, storming into a 5-1 lead with some fine potting. Scotland, by tradition, started slowly, but the effects of a day’s fishing, combined with a few days of boozing, were clearly taking their toll. They nicked a few frames to make it interesting only for Tenerife, inspired by Sergio and Neil, to pull away again. The Jocks took a few late crucial points at the death, but at 16-11, it was first blood to the hosts. Two nights later, Tenerife expected a fightback at Palms Bar, in Torviscas. But despite Tony, Sean and John finding their form, the hosts were never flus-

tered. Scotland won a few middle frames to go 8-4 up, before Roscoe won a vital match with Jolly. His fine finish deflated the visitors and was the catalyst for a deciding hour. Tenerife won nine matches on the trot and, while the night ended 15-12, they led 31-23 in the firstto-41 contest. The finale, at the Terrace Bar on Amarilla Golf, left the Tenerife boys needing just 10 matches to finish the job. Ashley produced the form of his life to beat Paddy and, at 7-4, the contest seemed over. But the Jocks’ pride raced to the surface and, suddenly, they found their groove. They took a couple of matches and forced the contest into the final 10 one-frame section. Tenerife needed one match, but, after Paul, then Ashley and Neil lost, they still needed one with seven to go. Stevie had Wez under the cosh, but the Hammer kept his composure. Two yellows were potted - and when he rolled the black into the middle bag, the bar erupted. Tenerife had finally done it, and the celebrations went long into the night! A big thanks

Sergio was voted Tenerife’s Player of the Tournament, and the boys from Scotland are vowing revenge next year. On Tuesday, it was back to the bread-andbutter of the Direct Telecom 8 Ball Pool League. In the top division, it was business as usual for the top sides. Tenerife Hammers A, who led the league by a single point, took a trip to Los Abrigos and eased past La Caña A. Gaf-

fers A, sitting just behind them, got the win they needed against Dreamers A. But Gaffers captain Neil said the scoreline flattered his team and it was a hard-fought game. Phoenix Knights look like taking third spot this season, but against stablemates Phoenix Potters in the battle of Los Abrigos, they could only share the points. But the Potters have two games in hand and, should they win both, they will move to within a point of the Knights. Palms Bar A improved their position with a solid win over Inn The Pink A, which moved them to within a point of the team from the Patch. Tenerife Hammers C grabbed three valuable points with a win against Exiles A, and The Treehouse A were too strong on the night for Terrace A. Basement club Toscales A have now won back-to-back league games, this time beating The Peacocks. In Division 2, Inn The Pink B still hold the top spot after a win over Toscales B, But the four teams behind them all

James Place collected all three points against Shorty’s to keep up the pressure. Shorty’s were in action twice this week, but they also failed to score any points from either game after losing at Next Door as well. Next Door also had two games and fared much better by winning both, beating 2JZs in their other fixture. Terrace Bar B, in good form recently and getting themselves into the top 10, came up against Bluebell A, who came out on top in this fixture.

Treehouse B matched their A Team’s score by brushing aside Dreamers B. Exiles B, hosting Picasso’s A in Silencio, picked up three points in a close game, while Gaffers C squeezed past Kandi 13 by the same scoreline. The week ended on a sad note as we lost Palms B’s popular captain Michael Shaw. He was a long-serving member of the league and won honours with Palms A. Michael was also the inspiration behind this year’s promotion charge for Palms B. We will miss him, but we will never forget him.

By Adi Benson IT is back to the romance of the FA Cup this weekend, which is quite apt really as it is also Valentine’s weekend.

Will there be a fairytale ending for one of the lower league teams? Possibly, because there is still a good sprinkling of teams from the Championship and League 1. And with an allChampionship fixture, it means the QuarterFinals will not be made up of Premier League teams, which is what the competition is all about. Sunderland v Southampton (Saturday, 12.45pm) With one cup final to look forward to, Sunderland will be looking to grab a place in the last eight of this competition, but is it a distraction to far? Their Premiership future is far from resolved as they still find themselves at the wrong end of the table, so do they gamble with a strong team or be happy with what they already have to play for and concentrate on the league? Southampton have no such worries. They are safely in the top half of the league, and a good cup run would be welcomed by the fans. They should be dreaming of a possible trip to Wembley. Prediction: Away win Cardiff v Wigan (Saturday, 3pm) Cardiff are in all sorts of trouble in the Premier League and face a similar dilemma to Sunderland. Sometimes a distraction is what you need, and going up against a Championship side could provide Cardiff with that. But they face the Cupholders in Wigan, who will not want to relinquish their grip on the famous old trophy. They have ridden their luck in a couple of the rounds but will fancy their chances against this Cardiff side. They are in good form as well, and

The right time for a fairytale

Uwe Rosler is making strides with them. Prediction: Away win Sheff Wed v Charlton (Saturday, 3pm) Wednesday have flirted with the relegation places but have been on a half-decent run of late – well, until Tuesday! Charlton have been poor this season thanks in part to rows off the field. Chris Powell has been

doing the job with one arm tied behind his back, and this will be a welcome distraction. But Wednesday just look a better side. Prediction: Home win Man City v Chelsea (Saturday, 5.15pm) Fixtures always have a habit of coming up like this, especially on the back of their recent game. City will view this as an excellent opportunity to get revenge after

being beaten recently by their title rivals. In that game, Chelsea arrived with a game plan and executed it to perfection. But City will have learnt from that game and will approach this game differently. After losing last year’s final, City will want to make amends and will relish the chance of putting Chelsea out. The question is, what does Mourinho do this time? Can he use the same tactics, or does he change his game plan? I suspect he will more or less stick to the same line-up and formation as the league game, with maybe a few little tweaks. But he will be reminding his players that they have already won here, giving them a slight advantage. As a cuptie, though, the game should be more open, meaning it should be a

cracker for the neutrals. Prediction: Home win Everton v Swansea (Sunday, 1.30pm) Since leaving their Tenerife training camp, Everton have had a couple of poor weeks. They are a little off the pace in the race for a Champions League place, so the FA Cup gives them a great opportunity to possibly finish their season on a high. Martinez took Wigan all the way last year, and they wouldn’t be a bad shout for the final because, on their day they are capable of beating anyone. Swansea have had a rough run. Michael Laudrup’s sacking may seem harsh from the outside, but they looked a different side as they humped arch-rivals Cardiff 3-0 last weekend. Garry Monk has a lot to look forward to with a Europa League match with Napoli in midweek. This is the perfect warm up. Prediction: Away win Sheff Utd v Nottm For (Sunday, 3pm) Sheffield Utd are the lowest-placed team left in the competition, but they shouldn’t be taken lightly. Nigel Clough looks to have them going in the right direction and they will be at full strength. According to Forest manager Billy Davies, his team are lucky to be in the competition still, after admitting Preston were the better team in the last round. That said, their 3rdround tie against West Ham was one of the performances of the cup so far. They are still challenging for promotion to the Premiership and have been in fine form recently - so they should be in the last eight on Sunday night. Prediction; Away win Arsenal v Liverpool (Sunday, 4pm) I’m not sure much can be taken from the recent league meeting between these two in terms of this game. Arsenal were poor, as much as Liver-

pool were magnificent, but the home team are not going to turn in two performances in a row like that against the visitors! This time, Wenger will have his team prepared, and they will want to exact revenge for the recent 5-1 drubbing. But they have a conundrum because just three days after this tie, they face Bayern Munich in the Champions League. So how strong a team does Wenger play? He won’t want injuries or tiredness, so this could play into Liverpool’s hands. They have a week off before their next game and rumour has it that they are off on their holidays after this game for a little sun on their backs - and a chance to recharge their batteries. Of course, after the league win, Liverpool will be confident. But the Emirates is a difficult place to get a result, and it will be a different Arsenal side they face. But if they can bring their A game, a place in the quarters is waiting. Prediction: Home win Brighton v Hull (Monday, 7.45pm) Of all this weekend’s cup games, this one has the biggest potential for an upset. Brighton have been going okay in the Championship and could still grab a playoff place for promotion. The fact that they have home advantage as well means they will have a decent crowd behind them. And that could provide what they need to get them a win from this game. Hull have been stuttering of late in the league and have been dragged into a relegation fight, so they might not have their eye completely on the ball. They know their opponents will be strong at home, and they will have to be resilient and defend well. If Brighton get an early goal, they will go on to win. Prediction: Home win
