Finally! Primark opens and 50 Shades shoots!
TWO massivelyhyped events are finally here, and the ladies will have big smiles on their faces this week.
The long-awaited Primark store finally opens in Santa Cruz on Thursday (27th Feb) and, over the weekend, the 50 Shades of Grey movie will be filming in El Medano. The Primark opening has been a year in the making, but the doors will open to the public at 11am. The Centro Comercial Meridiano, in the centre of Santa Cruz, is expecting a large crowd for the opening ceremony, which will be attended by Breege O’Donoghue, director of Primark, and Jose Luis Martínez de Larramendi, CEO of Primark Iberia. Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Bermudez and Cabildo President Carlos Alonso are expected to be among a number of VIPs who will also witness the cutting of the ribbon. The new store has over 3,000sq.ft of shop floor on two levels, manned by more than 130 employees.
While the reality of Primark in Tenerife has excited shoppers, there have, predictably, been some grumblings. Sections of the Island’s commercial sector have expressed concern about the arrival of the low-cost clothes chain. Some have claimed that the shop will be a “diversion” from the other Commercial Centre shops. Moujir Abbas, secretary general of the Federation of Urban Areas of Canarias (FAUCA), said: “We are working hard to enhance the historical district of Santa Cruz, but this is diverting customers and
could harm the downtown areas.” Tenerife’s Primark shop will be the Irish company’s 39th in Spain, and staff are getting into the Carnival spirit. They will be giving away 25-euro vouchers to the first 50 customers who appear in fancy dress. Well, once they have made a purchase! Primark was originally called Penney’s and started out in Ireland, opening its first shop in Dublin in June 1969. Within the year, four more stores appeared in and around the Dublin area. By 1971, it had opened its first non-Dublin
store in Cork and in that year, 11 more stores had opened up across Ireland. Northern Ireland swiftly followed, and by 1973 there were 17 shops in Great Britain. Over the next 10 years, the number of shops increased in both the UK and Ireland, with a total of 22 stores in the UK and the same number in Ireland. From 1984 to 1994, the brand began to purchase Woolworth stores and, by the end of 1994, the group had 66 branches. Following the acquisition of the BHS group in 1995, the brand became more known on
the high street. By 1999, the group had acquired stores from the Co-op and a year later saw the demise of C & A in the UK. Some of the empty premises were snapped up by Primark, taking its chain up to a total of 108 stores. It was one of the great success stories of all, but the company had more expansion in mind, opening Spain’s initial Primark in Madrid in May 2006 the first Primark was opened in Madrid. Another store followed in Murcia that same year, and the brand has since blossomed all over Europe. There are now stores in the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany and Belgium. The first Canary Islands’ store arrived in Gran Canaria in 2010, and there are now two shops there. Whilst Santa Cruz can expect a shopping frenzy this week, there will be a different kind of crowd in Los Abrigos, straining to get a glimpse of the latest Hollywood blockbuster to film on these shores. The cast and crew of Fifty Shades of Grey
will be shooting the ‘Honeymoon’ scenes at Playa de la Tejita in El Medano. Actors Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson will portray Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in the erotic telling of the best selling book. There have been rumors in America that Dakota Johnson’s real-life boyfriend is extremely jealous over the actress’s lovemaking scenes with Jamie Dornan in the film. The filming team will be in Tenerife for four days shooting the romantic rendezvous scenes, before production moves to Madrid. This weekend’s shooting is the latest location shoot on our islands from major Hollywood studios. The Clash of the Titans and sequel Wrath of the Titans has opened the way for more and more location work. Recently Ron Howard filmed In the Heart of the Sea featuring Thor star Chris Hemsworth in La Gomera while Ridley Scott’s upcoming epic movie Exodus, starring Christian Bale, were also filmed across the water.

Walk for Life chief honoured by Adeje B R I G I T T E GYPEN, who has organised the annual cancer charity fund-raiser Walk for Life, throughout its 10-year span, is to be honoured with Adeje Council’s 2014 Abinque prize.
It is given in recognition of a woman (or women) for her work in promoting equal opportunities and enhancing the life of Adeje people. Adeje Mayor Jose José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said: “After consideration, the commission has awarded this prize to Brigitte and her team for their humanitarian work, and the assistance they offer to women who have breast cancer, and their families.” The Mayor added: “It is important to continue to support solidarity initiatives such as the Walk for Life, which has become a movement that attracts more people to participate each year. “This project is a true example of a social reality that exists here in the South of Tenerife, where people of many different backgrounds live together, and which underlines our commitment to fight the problem of breast cancer.” Brigitte said: “I am absolutely delighted to receive the Abinque prize.
“It is an honour, because it will be of great help to all those who work to make the Walk for Life a reality.” She added: “Every year, we make a bigger effort and are stronger and more motivated to continue, fundamentally, because we put our heart and soul into the event. “And, as you now know, thousands of people join us every year. “The Walk for Life began as a personal project. I wanted to create an event to raise awareness among people about the importance of early detection of breast cancer, which was considered a taboo subject in the past. “For that reason, I involved my family, my friends and acquaintances, all of whom were happy to support the cause.” Each year, the Walk for Life sends all the monies raised to the Amate and Spanish Cancer Association. The funds go towards helping to treat women resident in South Tenerife who are suffering from breast cancer. These organisations care for and help those persons suffering from the disease, and their families. During 10 wonderfullycolourful years of Walk for Life, the organisers and charities have been able to offer psychological help, all kinds of assessments, residential options for patients who have to travel long distances for chemotherapy treatments, help
such as free wigs, makeup workshops, transport to hospitals, etc. And last year, despite these austere times, the 18,000-plus euros collected proved to be a record-breaker. Brigitte has pledged continue to “walk for life” for as long as she can, because, as she says, “there are always things that can be improved”. The Abinque prize will
be awarded during a dinner celebrating International Women’s Day on 8th March in the Costa Adeje Tourism Development Centre (CDTCA). And, for the second successive year, men are also welcome. As the Mayor has said: “We want to advance equality, eliminate barriers that separate men and women - and share moments of celebration.
“We recognise that this is a day to commemorate the advances already made by women in equality of opportunities. “But we also need to remember that there is still work to be done to achieve real and effective equality. With that in mind, we invite everyone to take part.” People interested in tickets for the dinner

The Abinque prize, created in 2004, has recognised the work of a number of individuals and collectives, including the Association of Women Managers, the Union of Saharan Women, Orbelinda Pérez Médina, Ana Oneida Borges Medina, Amada Trujillo Bencomo, Visiting Nurses, Rosa María Medina García, Adeje’s tomato and banana packers, the Limpiezas Domínguez SL cleaning company and employees and, last year, Maria Isabel Fernández González and her team at the Niño de Adeje crèche. The prize itself, always crafted by the Asociación San Juan, is a sculpture made with natural materials such as wood, wax and natural pigments. The name Abinque honours the Roque Abinque, which is a natural monument to the richness, beauty and history of the borough of Adeje. Mayor Jose José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said: “With this honour, we work to recognise and value the work of so many women who, on a daily basis, are an example to the rest of the world. “Thanks to them, today we have the energy to continue to fight for equal rights. All of them deserve a lasting recognition, which perpetuates their example and memory.”
New Armed Forces chief sworn in LIEUTENANT General Pedro Agustín Galán is the new Chief General of the Canary Islands Command. The event took place at the Palace of the General Captaincy of the Canary Islands in Santa Cruz, where Galán took the oath, appointed by Royal Decree 84/2014 at the proposal of the
Ministry of Defence. In his speech, Galán spoke about what he is expected to do, saying: “That which we who work in the Military have done all our lives; work with full dedication to the best service for Spain and the Spanish through the Army.” He added: “As a principal responsibility, I
see the preparation of soldiers, units and commanders which are necessary to continue the current operating structure of the Armed Forces.” With regard to the way he will carry out his duties, Galán quoted General Antonio Gutiérrez, whose army defeated Lord Nelson in 1797.
General Gutiérrez, as read from texts by General Emilio Abad Ripol (who last year published a book about the defence of Santa Cruz), made particular reference to creating a force which “ensures the main moral and professional standards for military service conform to the ideas and
orders of the General. “Everything from their ability to make decisions, to become the one who adheres to orders, carrying out the most accurate and timely enforcement of the ordinances, and fulfilling orders from above with the same determination and accuracy, and carrying this
discipline through life.” Later in the Santa Cruz ceremony, General Jaime Domínguez Buj, the Army’s Chief of Staff, thanked the authorities for their presence. VIPs included Canarian Government President Paulino Rivero and Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermudez.

Ring road and schools to cost a mighty 500m IT will cost about 500 million euros to complete the Island ring road and build 15 new schools.
That’s the prediction of José Luis Delgado, Tenerife’s Minister for Roads and Landscapes, who says the investment would, potentially, create 1,500 jobs directly, and a further 2,200 indirectly. Priority would be given to completing the ring road section between El Tanque and Santiago del Teide, followed by the 15 schools. Funding would be sought from the Canary Island Government and Tenerife Cabildo, as well as private companies, which, Delgado
believes, is the “only way forward” for the pending projects.
The Minister, accompanied by Chamber of Commerce Vice-Presi-
dent Hoel Pérez Rein, was addressing over 100 entrepreneurs at
a co-operation day for the “Public and Private Partnership for the Promotion of Infrastructure”. It featured 15 speakers, including senior officials from the Development Ministry, plus representatives of major banking institutions BBVA and Caixabank. Leading consultancy firms Price Waterhouse Coopers and Corporación5 were also there. Delgado, not for the first time, criticised the Development Ministry for refusing to invest in roads, particularly when residents contribute, via taxes, towards their upkeep. His sentiments were supported by Hoel, who said public investment had plummeted since the start of the reces-
sion. He also stressed that the infrastructure was a strategic asset an investment which would boost the economy. Delgado hopes to open doors for collaboration between public and corporate entities, and feel that a public/private partnership is the way forward. He emphasised the need for global action, which would include construction, maintenance, renovation and renewal, together with operations’ management for publiclyowned infrastructure. He also hopes to secure the co-operation of companies with experience in the sector, particularly those with the equipment and credentials to meet the challenges ahead.
Soria backs oil search JOSÉ Manuel Soria, Spain’s Minister for Industry, Energy and Tourism, is defending the proposed search for oil off the Canaries’ coast. He believes the benefit to the Islands’ economy and job creation is “very important”. Gran Canaria-born Soria, former Cabildo President there, and once Mayor of Las Palmas, is supporting the proposal, which seeks to carry out surveys off the coast of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. In response to a question in Parliament, Soria said that the Canaries’ jobless total sat at 35%, and that anything to boost job creation should be welcomed. He added that as twothirds of the Islands’ economy depended on tourism, the figure of 35% unemployed tied in with his reasoning that the Canaries currently have “tourism and nothing else”. He also called for support to promote the research and exploration,
while remaining sympathetic to the environment. Soria stressed that no surveys were to take place within 60 kilometres of the Canary Islands’ coasts, nor the coast of Morocco. Also, surveys will be confined to an area sitting on an imaginary line separating Spanish and Moroccan waters. The Minister said the preliminary studies
indicated that oil in the area could reduce Spain’s imports of crude by around 10%. The proposal has been met with much local opposition, particularly by those who fear that drilling will affect tourism and the environment. However, Soria believes that an oil industry will bring improvements to ports, and, in turn, tourism.

Miles of smiles from the Junior Carnaval Queen A M AN D A Sánchez Suárez is Tenerife’s junior Carnaval Queen, chosen from 21 entrants … and she’s lovely!
The eight-year-old has hardly stopped smiling since being crowned on Sunday night in Santa Cruz. Amanda, representing the Carricitos Cultural Association, did not expect to win, and she said it was “mad” when she heard her name called out. Ángel Ramos designed her costume (or “fanta-
sy” as they are known), which was called “Item 13, Page”, and personifies Amanda as the teacher in a school for witches, trying to teach the class to fly. It took him several months to complete, and Amanda “helped a little” by attaching glitter on to the stars. Despite the economic crisis, every effort went into making the contestants’ costumes as spectacular as possible. Ramos said the standard was “extraordinarily high,” and given financial constraints, he added, all the designers had to “sharpen their
wits” to make the best of what they had. Amanda said it was great fun taking part,

The Tenerife Cabildo President told a radio broadcast this week that he has been frustrated in his efforts to tie down a meeting with the Canary Islands President. This was his third title, following success in 2007 and 2008 - and when his candidates did not win, they finished either second, or became a Maid of Honour (Dama de Honor). But Ángel has not been tempted to design the huge costumes associated with the main Carnaval Queen competition, despite having helped other designers

There are more young men out of work and not studying than young women, and they are more at risk of becoming “long-term” unemployed. Some, 27.9% of women are ninis, compared
with 31% of men. This gap has been attributed to improved standards of education, as well as more educational opportunities for young women, and it has been evident for the last few years. The level of education attained also has an impact on the ninis; 36% of those who did not work or study in 2013 did not complete secondary education.
It will be working hand in hand with MADAT, the Dogs’ Welfare Trust and vet Nahum García del Río, to rehome animals cared for at the Adeje Animal Refuge. The associations will take preference when it comes to adopting those from the centre who have stayed beyond the normal legal limit, with no financial benefit to either side. Municipal Services Councillor Gonzalo Delgado Díaz, says: “We have been working on this for some time, and we have met all the animal protection agencies who showed an interest to speed up and assist the adoption of animals, mostly dogs, who have been abandoned. “From the Council’s point of view, these agencies can help to promote the adoptions.” Under the agreement
MADAT (Friends of Animals in Tenerife), will take all the dogs who can be adopted, and who have passed the municipal by-law’s 20-day limit at the centre, so that owners may reclaim them. The by-law states that once that period has passed, the Council is allowed to seek a new owner for the animal, or pass it on to an animal protection agency. The Dogs Welfare Trust will meet the costs of the vet, who is also a part of the agreement. He will include a health report, check for worms and carry out any other treatment required by the animals,
such as vaccinations and micro-chipping. The agreement will last for a year and will be overseen by a committee comprising representatives from each of the involved associations and the Council. An abandoned animal is one not wearing identification, whose owner is unknown to the authorities and is not registered on the census. The Council identifies the animal if it has a micro-chip and lets the owner know he or she has 10 days to collect the animal. Once this period has passed, the Council and the protection agencies named in this agreement may offer the dog for adoption.

Rajoy in the Foreign chair
SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy met with the Foreign Policy Council on Monday for what was probably his most important meeting of the year so far. The FPC supports and advises the PM of its
foreign affairs policy and there was plenty to cover. Rajoy chaired the meeting at Madrid’s Moncloa Palace, and also in attendance were Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, along with
his senior ministers. They reviewed various issues affecting international current affairs, and the 2014 Spain Action Plan was also discussed, together with various legislative initiatives on foreign affairs policy.
Favourite baby names are Valeria and Hugo FORGET Amelia and Harry, the top baby names in the Canaries in 2012 were Valeria and Hugo.
For the second year running, Valeria has topped the list of mostpopular baby names for girls born in the Canary Islands, notching up 193 instances. Lucía, Daniela, Paula and Carla were also in the picture. For the boys, Hugo was followed by Diego, Daniel and Pablo, according to data supplied by the Canary Islands’ Statistics Institute (ISTAC). Regarding names with roots steeped in Canary Islands history, there were several instances of girls being named Gara and Haridian. And for boys, Aday, Airam and Nauzet were the most popular. By islands, the most popular names in Lanzarote were Lucía, Alejandro, Daniel and Hugo. Sara, Daniela and Daniel topped the list in Fuerteventura. Valeria, Hugo and Pablo were most popular in Gran
Canaria, and Valeria and Hugo in Tenerife. In La Gomera, Lucía was chosen most often for the girl’s name, and for boys, and it was a tie between Álvaro, Andrés, Darniel, Erik and Irome. In La Palma, Valeria and Gabriel led the pack, and in El Hierro, Nerea was the most popular girl’s name, along with Cesar and Hugo for boys. And now for the rather tragic history of the most popular aboriginal girl’s name. Gara was the name of a La Gomera girl, who fell in love with Jonay, son of the king of Adeje. Every year, the noblemen of Tenerife were invited to parties in La Gomera, and Gara and
Jonay fell in love. But their love was forbidden because of their opposing religious beliefs. One night, Jonay took to the treacherous sea and swam to La Gomera to be reunited with his love. He and Gara escaped together to the highest peak on the island, but, pursued by their families, they committed suicide by flinging themselves on to a sharp cedar branch, impaling them in a mortal embrace. Gara (princess of water) and Jonay (prince of fire) gave their names to the highest peak on La Gomera, as well as the National Park. Aday was the name given to the strongest Guanche warrior in a group who usually lived away from the rest of the tribe. It means “one who lives below” and is believed to have derived from the Berber name “Uaday”. The Berbers were some of the first settlers in the Canary Islands, and Aday is typical to Tenerife.

Zuckerburg makes an almighty mark! I HAVE all the time in the world for those who want to get on in life. And for those who want to make life better, or simpler or just more fun. It astounds me that people like Bill Gates get such a bad press. This man, in many ways, changed the world. And he’s donated billions of dollars to charity. Ditto Mark Zuckerburg. Last week it was revealed that he had raised a billion dollars for charity. Yet he is hated. Maybe it’s the haircut? What I do know is that he’s as a sharp as tack. This week’s deal, which saw him snap up WhatsApp was mind-boggling. He paid $19 billion (more than 11bn quid) for a company which has never earned a penny. But Zuckerburg has just secured Facebook’s future. The internet’s short history has already shown us how quickly the top dogs can be swallowed up. Websites have given way to Apps, which are now set to be taken over by the next big thing. And yet trusty old “boring” Facebook trundles along. The
owners missed a trick, a gap in the market if you will, a few years ago, and WhatsApp have scooped the bounty. Like Twitter, Facebook do a messenger system, but not the same way. And the key to the WhatsApp success was keeping it simple. And free. I’m sure Zuckerberg looked long and hard into how he could do a Facebook rival, and I’m sure it can be done from scratch, for less than $19billion. But why start at the beginning? In an instant, he guarantees Facebook’s future and sends the Grim Reaper over to Skype towers. But he’s not the only smart cookie here. Jan Koum and Brian Acton are now overnight billionaires. In 2009 they were living on the breadline. But a good idea is a good idea. With ambition, drive, smarts and a goal, we can all achieve our dreams. We just need to have that one great idea.

Gabriel Wolgeschaffen is mainly targeting Santa Cruz and La Laguna and hopes his ideas will be taken seriously, because, he says, development will aid the economy’s recovery. “Not all tourists want sun and sand when on holiday,” he adds. “Santa Cruz and La Laguna “offer a different, yet complementary option to the stereotypical Tenerife holiday.” Ashotel’s internal figures suggest Wol-
geschaffen may be on to something because hotel occupancy in the metropolitan area for the Christmas period registered 82.03% - up 45% on 2012. Winter is still a peak time for overseas visi-
tors, and that is why Wolgeschaffen has called on the local government in both areas to think seriously about investing in tourism. As he says, it again highlights the positive effect on the economy
of the area if successful campaigns are rolled out. Wolgeschaffen spoke of the difficulties faced by Tenerife in the past few years, not only in employment, but in the performance of tourism in general. “It’s not about filling hotels occasionally,” he said. “We have to continue to invest in the metropolitan area of an Island so well known as a predominantly tourist destination.” Wolgeschaffen also brought up the recent increase in cruise traffic to Santa Cruz. He hopes to use the increased passenger traffic to the area as leverage to persuade the Council to invest further in the future
Budget airlines still flying high
THE Canary Islands last month welcomed 302,841 international passengers on budget airlines.
It added up to a 21.7% rise against the same period last year and put the Islands second on a national level, behind Madrid. Brits again topped the
list of travellers with 40.2% (up 14.1% on January 2013) and German visitors were second (up 16.6% from 16.4%). Overall, the Canaries had 1,007,211 international passengers in January, up 14.1% on 2013, which was also the second-highest rise in the country. Nationally, Spain’s airports handled 3.4 million international pas-
sengers, up 8.3% against January last year. Of these, around 25% flew with budget airlines, while the rest chose the more traditional companies. But both budget and regular airlines had better figures this January - 10.9% and 6.5% respectively. Both types of airlines saw similar occupancy figures: 71.4% for the
budget brigade, as opposed to 70.6% for the traditional companies. Ryanair, EasyJet and Vueling again carried the highest number of low-cost passengers, accounting for 67.9% between them. Of the trio, only EasyJet saw a fall in its figures between January 2013 and last month.

Real gents happy to pay the dating game HOORAH for the good old-fashioned gentleman and yes, there are plenty still around.
Despite years and years of women making huge strides towards gender equality, most men are still happy to foot the bill on their first date, and continue to do so throughout the relationship. And a new American study reveals that although more than half of women offer to pay, 39% of them secretly hope their partner rejects their offer. The survey, covering 17,000 men and women, found that 84% of men and 58% of women said their partners usually paid when the bill came, even after they had been together for some time. But the developing confusion between male and female gender roles was revealed by nearly 66% of men, who believed women should contribute, compared with 44% of women who felt put out when it was suggested. And although 75% of men felt guilty accepting women’s money, 44% would stop dating a
woman who never paid. Dr David Frederick, an assistant professor in psychology at California’s Chapman University, who led the study, said the findings showed how traditional notions of relationships between men and women were clinging on, despite moves towards equality of the sexes. “The motivation for the study was to understand why some gendered practices are more resistant to change than others,” he said. “For example, the acceptance of women in the workplace versus holding on to traditional notions of chivalry. “Conventional notions of chivalry dictate that on a date, the man pays, whereas egalitarian ideals suggest gender should not determine who pays for the entertainment expenses.” Dr Frederick added: “This research examines the extent to which people embrace or reject these competing notions after nearly 50 years of feminism. “It is known that 80% of marriages today are based on sharing the bread-winner’s burden, so is that role shared prior to marriage and, if so, how early in the
dating process? His team say their results, presented to the American Sociological Association, suggest that the deep-rooted courtship ritual concerning who pays is changing, along with the transformation of the relative material and social power of women and men. Other results showed that as the relationship develops, the couple’s spending roles become more equal. Even if men are paying a larger proportion of expenses, 40% of couples agreed that dating expenses were, at least, partially shared within the first month, while 74% of men and 83% of women reported some sharing of expenses within six months. In some ways the historical idea that the man displays benevolent sexism and dominance as a bread-winner is still alive. Dr Frederick added that young men and women in their twenties were the most likely to endorse the “all people are equal” philosophy. But this is a mass culture phenomenon with the same basic patterns being seen, regardless of daters’ ages, income, or education.
Tourism jobs’ boom NEW jobs in the Canarian tourism sector last month rose by 5.9% against the January 2013 figures. The total, released by the Ministry of Energy, Industry and Tourism on Monday, depicted
the highest increase in new contracts and affiliation to the Social Security system - nearly treble the 2% national average. There are now 120,523 people employed in hostelry or travel agencies throughout the
Canaries, which bodes well for the holiday periods especially. Following the Canaries were Murcia, Andalucia and Valencia, where employment in the tourist industry rose by 4, 3.8 and 3.2% respectively.

Tragedy cruise ship rusty, claims widow THE widow of a man who died on St Valentine’s Day when a freak wave crashed into a cruise ship claims the vessel was “improperly maintained”.
Helen Swinstead said she told her 85-yearold husband, James, that the windows of the Marco Polo were going to leak before water started pouring in as they sat in a restaurant on deck six. He died before he could be taken to hospital, and a number of the 735 passengers - mainly British - were injured when the wave struck the ship in the English Channel. Cruise and Maritime Voyages (CMV), which owns the vessel, said it had undergone “stringent and rigorous surveys” and regular inspections. But Mrs Swinstead, from Colchester, Essex, told Sky News: “I said to my husband - because my father used to make paint the windows are going to leak because of the rust. “There was a rusty puddle on the window sill. I think the ship was improperly maintained. “It had come from Madeira, I think, before we got on it in January, and they had bad storms then. “And there’s so much paint on the outside that you probably can’t see the rust. They’d
just slop some more on whenever we got into port.” Christian Verhounig, chief executive of CMV, said the safety of passengers travelling with the company was of “paramount importance”. .He added: “Marco Polo undergoes stringent and rigorous surveys and is inspected regularly including a recent annual dry docking survey and certification,” he said. “It is a purpose-built, deep-sea, ocean-going liner, maintained and serviced in full compliance of strict British and international maritime regulations, and it is efficiently manned by a professional and dedicated crew.” The Marco Polo was travelling through an area of the English Channel known as the Western Approaches when the freak wave struck. The extent of the waves, whipped up by the severe storm which hammered Britain on Friday, was revealed in photos taken from on board the ship as it sailed past France. It was heading back to its home port of Tilbury, Essex, at the end of a 42-night voyage, which had included the Brazilian Amazon and the West Indies. Nektarios Rigas, who uploaded the pictures to Facebook, described the 20-metre waves as “mountains”. A female passenger in
her Seventies was airlifted off the ship, and 14 others were treated for minor injuries.
THE first nudist beach on La Palma was created 30 years ago by Los Llanos Town Hall.
It was in the Las Monjas cove, between Puerto Naos and Charco Verde, and proved to be a huge success. But it was closed in 2011 because of a rockfall risk, and the loss of sand. Now, however, Tazacorte Town Hall has approved a new naturist beach for this summer. It will be sited at the end of the Los Tarajales beach, in El Puerto, covering around 15,000sq.m. It has a large area of sand, created after recent enlargements to the port. Gonzalo Pascual, the councillor responsible for beaches in that district, said: “A practice existing with roots in

create more beaches which qualify for the prestigious Blue Flag. That tells everyone that a beach meets stringent standards of safety, health, hygiene, accessibility, respect for the environment and water quality, among other criteria.

PINEWOOD Studios ...opening in Cardiff!
PINEWOOD Studios, the worldrenowned film company, is opening a new studio in Cardiff.
Pinewood Studios Wales will be based at the former Energy Centre building in Wentloog, forming part of the company’s global network. The deal was announced on Monday by the Welsh Government’s First Minister, Carwyn Jones, and Pinewood Shepperton chief executive Ivan Dunleavy. The Welsh Government believes the 180,000 sq.ft complex could generate an estimated £90m for the economy. A jubilant Jones said: “Attracting such an iconic global brand as Pinewood is wonderful news for Wales. “This high-profile investment is of significant economic value to Wales while the partnership between the Welsh government and Pinewood offers a priceless opportunity to promote Wales as a world-class location for film and television production.” Pinewood and Shepperton Studios have created in excess of 1,500 films in over 75 years, including the incredibly successful James Bond franchise and the Carry On series. The news was welcomed by Hollywood star Michael Sheen, from Port Talbot, who described the deal as great news. “This is a logical next step, building upon the huge success of the re-
vitalised Welsh entertainment industry,” he added. “It’s always a precarious business to attempt such a large undertaking, but it points to the confidence, the expertise and the creative spirit of the people of Wales. “And I hope it can help the country come closer to realising its hopes for the future.” Matthew Rhys, star of Brothers and Sisters, from Whitchurch, Cardiff, said it was an opportunity for Welsh talent. “This is more good news for Wales, and recognition of our place on the world stage as a destination for film and television drama production,” he added. “Pinewood is a massive name in film and it’s great that more of the many talented people in Wales will now have a chance to ply their trade at home. “Having a studio like this on their doorstep will also inspire a new generation of actors and film-makers from Wales.” Award-winning production designer Ed Thomas, whose credits include Da Vinci’s Demons, Doctor Who and Torchwood, was in full agreement. “As someone who actively promotes and works in the industry here, I am continually surprised when I meet producers from around the world who still have no idea of our country’s contribution to film and television,” he said. Pauline Burt, Chief Executive of the Film Agency for Wales, said: “A major player like
Pinewood is a great neighbour to have, stimulating inward investment and creating jobs, and we are looking forward to developing opportunities together.” Wales Economy Minister Edwina Hart said her Government would invest up to £30m into projects brought forward by Pinewood. Wales has already established a name for itself in TV and drama production since the official 2012 opening of BBC Cymru Wales’ Roath Lock studios in Cardiff Bay. Programmes such as Casualty, Welsh-language drama Pobol y Cwm and children’s drama Wizards vs Aliens are made there. Rhodri Talfan Davies, director of BBC Cymru Wales, said Pinewood Studios Wales was “terrific news” for television and movie production. “Wales has demonstrated over recent years that we can deliver on the global stage, and this news opens up another exciting new chapter in a remarkable Welsh renaissance,” he added. Pinewood will lease the Cardiff building from the Welsh Government for at least five years. Curiously, it is not the first attempt to create a film studio complex in Wales. In 2008, the multi-million-pound Dragon International Studios in Rhondda Cynon Taf nicknamed Valleywood - was partly mothballed after promising to put Wales at the heart of the UK film industry. Just one film, Ironclad, was shot at the site.

longing for Lego
THE revived Lego craze sweeping the world has even reached David Beckham and The Simpsons.
The animated cartoon characters are getting a plastic makeover in one episode as the Danish company, which dreamed up Lego in the Forties, teams up with family to produce a show from the building blocks. It is entitled Brick Like Me and sees Homer Simpson wake up in Springfield, where everyone and everything is made out of Lego. It will be shown in th US on 4th May. Homer has to figure a way out of his dilemma before he gets stuck in the plastic world forever. The Lego Group first started producing the colourful blocks in 1949 and, even after all these years, it remains one of the most popular toys
Long-term, jobless numbers shoot up
in the world. Earlier this month, legendary rertired footballer Beckham told The Sunday Times Magazine that playing with the blocks calmed him down. And Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond admitted that building Lego models helped him recover from a 300mph jet-car crash, which nearly killed him in 2006. The Simpsons, created by Matt Groening, is the longest-running
animated series in the history of US television, with more than 500 episodes behind it. The series entered its 25th season last year, and the Lego episode will be its 550th show. So far, the season has seen a special Halloween episode directed by Mexican film-maker Guillermo Del Toro, while a future show will cross over with Futurama, another animated series by Groening.
The Simpsons has also been renewed for a 26th season, in which producers have been teasing followers that one long-standing character will die. Lego, meanwhile, has become a hot box-office commodity. Last week’s American release of The Lego Movie, featuring super-heroes and villains in a complete Lego world, raked in $69.1 million (£41,104,670) in its opening weekend.
THE number of longterm, unemployed people in the Canary Islands has risen from 200,300 to 235,080 people in 2013. At 17%, it is one point above the national average, according to a report by employment agency Randstad. The phrase “long-term” refers to those who have been unemployed and looking for work for at least 24 months. In Spain, a total of just over 3.5 million was registered last year, compared with 3.03 million in 2012. The greatest increases were in Asturias, Castilla - La Mancha and Cantabria (averaging +34 %, +29 % and +27% respectively). In contrast, the lowest increases were seen
in the Balearic Islands (+4%: 63,700 more than 2012), La Rioja (+5%: 15,525) and Extremadura (+8%: 95,175). The Canary Islands currently has 940,300 people registered out of work. In Spain, unemployment benefit is calculated according the length of employment prior to being out of work (on which Social Security contributions have been paid, and where the employee has contributed at least 360 days in the previous six years), and the registered salary earned in the 180 days before redundancy. It has a maximum duration of 720 days, after which benefit entitlement stops.

I’ve murdered at least 23 people in America, boasts 19-year-old girl Coca-Cola
A TEENAGER, charged with her husband of murdering a man they met through Craigslist, claims she has killed at least 22 others across the US.
In a jailhouse interview with a local newspaper in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, 19-year-old Miranda Barbour said she wanted to plead guilty to killing Troy LaFerrara in November. She also said that in the last six years, she had killed all the other people, from Alaska to North Carolina, as part of her involvement in a satanic cult. When asked about the exact number of victims, Barbour said: “When I hit 22, I stopped counting.” The teenager stressed
that she did not want to get out of jail, and that she would kill again if she were released. “I don’t care if people believe me - I just want to get it out,” she told the Daily Item. Sunbury police Chief Steve Mazzeo said investigators had been in contact with the FBI and law enforcement in several states. “From information we gathered and from information gathered from her interview, we
are seriously concerned and have been in contact with the proper authorities,” he added. Attorneys for Barbour and her husband, 22-year-old Elytte Barbour, have not commented on the contents of the interview. The couple’s lawyers have sought psychiatric evaluations for their clients. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Barbour and her husband.

Barbour told investigators she met Mr LaFerrara after he responded to her advert in the worldwide social media outlet Craigslist, offering companionship for money. Police allege her husband told investigators they committed the crime because they wanted to kill someone together. The couple told police that Miranda Barbour stabbed Mr LaFerrara in the front seat of her car while her husband held a cord around his neck. In her interview, Barbour offered little detail on the murders in which she claimed to have been involved – in Alaska, Texas, North Carolina and California. She said she joined a satanic cult in Alaska when she was 13, before moving to North Carolina.
workers strike UNIONS representing CocaCola workers in the Canaries led a two-day strike this week in protest against the potential dismissal of 1,250 employees.
The company is also proposing to close four Spanish production plants, which could affect 52 workers in the Canaries. But that figure may increase because the company plans to outsource certain services now handled by its staff. Trade unions believe the proposals are unjustified because the company continues to make “huge profits”.
The Islands are already in turmoil regarding unemployment, and the unions believe that Coca-Cola’s decision is “irrational and unacceptable”. A spokesperson said: “It is destroying the jobs of workers, who are being punished by a simple desire to restructure, which, in turn, will generate even more profits for those at the top of the company.” As a show of support, unions have asked Canarian families to stop buying Coca-Cola. On Tuesday, the Coca-Cola Company published its full year and fourth-quarter 2013 reports, which indicated a worldwide annual volume growth of 2%, and a 1% growth in the last quarter alone.

THANK YOU to all readers who are sending me enquires. Please keep them coming in and I will reply to them.
This week, I received an email from Mrs Mary Frewin, who wrote: “Can you please tell me what the Inheritance Tax is for Tenerife? My husband and I have lived here for nearly 10 years and we have a villa. I have read in the paper this past week about the Spanish tax. Does this mean that here in Tenerife we have to pay?” I have written many articles in Canarian Weekly connected to Inheritance Tax, and this a good opportunity to refresh some concepts. The answer to your question is Yes. You and your husband have to liquidate and pay Inheritance Tax if you inherit properties in Spain house, villa, monies, vehicles and so on. If you have properties in Spain, your inheritors must pay such tax. The quota to be paid depends on the value of the estate. The tax is due from the date of the death, and the inheritors have six months from that day to liquidate and pay tax. Bear in mind that in many cases, there is no tax payable if the value of the estate is low. But the tax should be liquidated anyway. The rules and rates of the Inheritance Tax (or
Gift tax) are different and depend on the relationship between Grantor and Inheritors (beneficiaries). If there is no relationship, the tax is higher than in the case of relatives. Inheritance Tax is the tax payable on any increase of wealth, obtained by reason of death. Gift tax is charged on the increased wealth, caused by virtue of a gift while the transferor is still living. The inheritance and Gift Tax is levied on the following: *The acquisition of assets and rights by way of succession. Foreign individuals must pay Inheritance Tax in Spain for the Spanish estate only. *Obtaining assets and rights by way of gift. This includes any other gratuitous transfer during Grantor’s lifetime. *Acquisition of revenue
from a life insurance policy, where the contractor party is a different person from the beneficiary. Each beneficiary must individually pay the tax, which must be paid before the beneficiary can sell the decedent’s assets. If the inheritor wants to sell all the assets of the deceased, he) must first pay the Inheritance Tax. In addition, the Grantees (those who acquired an asset by gift) and the beneficiaries of an insurance policy, also have to pay this tax. To calculate the rate of the tax is complicated. Different percentages shall be charged according to an increasing scale, and other circumstances will be taken into account. In fact, every Autonomic Communities has its own rules (different regimes, exemptions, etc). Inheritance and Gift
Tax is progressive, and the rates applicable are determined by the following circumstances: *The value transferred to the beneficiaries *The existing wealth *The beneficiary’s relationship with the deceased The applicable deductions for the relatives, are divided into these groups: Group I: Descendants and adopted individuals under 21 Group II: For descendants, adopted individuals over 2.plus spouses and ascendants Group III: For second or third-degree collateral family (aunts and uncles, for example) and descendants by affinity or ascendants Group IV: For fourthdegree collateral family and other transferees, no reductions shall be applied A progressive rate is
applicable to the net taxable amount to arrive at the gross tax payable. The final amount is the final tax payable (which is called cuota tributaria or deuda tributaria). It is suggested that all legal matters referred to Inheritance and Gift Tax be sent to professionals for advice, guidance and execution. Group I has more tax deductions than Group II, which, at the same time, has more deductions than Group III, and so on. The return of Inheritance Tax and Gift Tax will not affect non-residents as they have been paying such taxes in spite of the exemption (available for residents). The control of the tax belongs to every local or Autonomous Community. In many Communities (i.e. Madrid) there is almost an exemption
to this tax. In the past, Canary Islands Community enjoyed a period of exemption, but the tax was recovered by the Canarian Government in 2008. This means that the tax is back now. There are ways to reduce the impact of the tax, but not all solutions are good. In fact, the solution applied to one case is not necessarily good for another case. It is recommended that you ask for legal advice. It is also advisable for these purposes to make a Spanish Will. I will be back with this item, which seems to be very interesting. EVERYBODY loves the birth of a new baby. From the first test confirming that a new one is on the way and that runup to the big day itself.
Obviously the mother, who can be in labour for days, can have that rest she deserves, but for the father it’s a different matter. We want to shout out to the whole world. Who cares about how much the next mobile bill will be – every one of your friends in your contacts list needs to know. Does not matter if it has been years since you have spoken to quite a few, they need to know. As a new father, it’s your duty to go to the pub and tell complete strangers that you have a new member of the family to feed. And, in turn, it’s the duty of the random people to buy you beer all night! Well, that’s how the normal people like you and I would deal with it. If you’re a celebrity, however, it’s a whole different ball game. So, as you’re the most famous person on the planet (in your mind, at least) forget anyone in the family.
The most important person to you is your PA. Without this person, you wouldn’t even know what’s going on outside of your secluded world. The press release needs sorted out long before the grandparents need to know. Tell the glossy mags of the new child and let them battle it out as to who has the exclusive rights to that first public picture. Nothing goes “kerrching” like a celebrity baby. It’s definitely up there with black slavery! And they have to get their “people” to write that first Tweet. If you do follow celebs on Twitter, do you seriously think they write themselves? Do you? Madness!
And after all the fuss and press for a month, they go and pay a nanny or two, and maybe spend a few minutes every week with their child because they are far too busy trying to get a deal for the next reality show. That’s how celebs spend their time after the birth. You think I’m exaggerating? You just have to open your eyes and look at what’s happening over the new baby of Simon Cowell and the mother called … Oh, what’s her name? Hold on, I’ll get it … I give up! See? It’s the mother’s day, really. But nobody cares, or wants to care, because in everyone’s mind, Simon is famous
and that’s all that matters. It’s the truth, isn’t it? You know it! But you know what surprises me more? The fact that the media and YOU not me - have suddenly forgotten the circumstances surrounding all of this. Simon slept with this woman who, at the time, was married to his best friend! It was the biggest news in the world at the time. But it seems to have been swept under the carpet watching the entertainment shows. The presenters happily show the official picture of Simon, baby … and what’s her name. Congratulating all those concerned.
Maybe it’s just me, but as someone who was cheated on a few years ago, I can’t help but feel for Andrew Silverman. That’s the name of the husband, who must be going through hell at this very minute. A year ago Mr Silverman, Simon and that woman were holidaying all over the place. He’s a billionaire, so the fame thing wouldn’t matter. Simon is a friend. They all get on together. It was only the three of them under the moonlight on a yacht for weeks when they had time. Unknown to Andrew, Simon and the other one started an affair. From what we gather, and it has to be true, the two of them started to steal kisses behind the husband’s back. And then they totally killed trust and proved that they do not have one moral bone in their bodies as they slept together on the same trips while the husband was in the next room. The fall-out was worldwide news. Andrew, rightly so, was angry over the whole sordid situation. Quite a lot called him “bitter”. Nothing wrong with that. He at least shows his emotions. Yes, it was his friend. But the most important thing was the fact that it was his wife. He was reported at the time to say he loved his wife and always would. Nine months down the road and I’m sure nothing’s changed for the
guy. Only now, it must be killing him. Living in America, as he does, he’ll have to put up with every morning, afternoon and tea-time television show reporting on it. Magazine shows in the States last all day. It’s like watching This Morning on a constant loop. Going out for a walk to get away from it will be no good because all the papers and magazines on the newsstands are covering it. Total nightmare for the poor bloke. Looking at the pictures of the baby, yes he’s cute and healthy and, maybe, Simon will be a great father. I say maybe, and I’ve no personal experience of the man, so what do I know? The kid will have a wonderful life, I’m sure. But my thoughts are with a man who’s broken-hearted, and not only because he’s lost his wife. Now he has to put up with looking at her smiling all over the place with her newfound happiness. Of course, you can say he’s a billionaire. But as great as that would be, having all the money in the world does not mend a broken heart. So remember Andrew Silverman, the guy who was cheated on so cruelly by Simon Cowell, who’s famous. Good luck to baby Eric, who we know because of the father. But the woman involved? Not so much.
Bite is worse than its bark
LAST week, plans were put forward in parts of the UK to make it law that you cannot smoke in a car if you have kids with you.
I’m all for it. Why should you put innocent young children through the smell and danger of your cigarettes? Those who don’t understand and, to be honest, are so stupid to have kids and hold a driving licence, were up in arms. Stupid statements like: “Why should
they who pay tax, insurance and own their car, be told what to do?” Would those same people set fire to their house with their kids
in it? Makes you think. But there’s one thing that seems to becoming a habit. Not only in living rooms around the world, but making headlines.
I’m talking about the complete morons who think leaving a newborn baby or young child in a room alone with a dog is okay. How many times have we woken up to the horrific news that a child had been mauled to death by a dog, which has been in the family for years? Too many times. This week another family pet killed a baby, biting the poor thing’s head off! So I’m saying there should be a law, and not only for these idiots to be made aware of the dangers. Like driving a car, tests
should be carried out by examiners for anyone wanting to own a dog. At the end, a test is done and you must pass every question. I’m sick of hearing the same thing by those who don’t have the brains to look after a kid, “Our dog has always been friendly. I don’t understand what happened.” I’ll tell you what happened. You, as always, showed a lack of com-
mon sense. Would you leave your kid with a stranger while you popped out for a minute? So why would you leave them with a dog? And the same people who would oppose a law on this will always say: “We’re turning into a nanny state.” At least a nanny wouldn’t leave a child alone with, for all intents and purposes, what is still a wild animal!

Television presenter and dog-lover John Barrowman taps into the UK’s affection for all things canine. In a game show that sees dogs and their owners from all over the UK competing in a number of challenges, leading to the final spectacular Dogstacle Course, the series promises to be full of sporting drama and entertainment. After weeks of competition the eventual winner will be crowned at Crufts. Today’s three competitors are civil servant Dave and German Shepherd Rex, lettings administrator Kelly and border collie Harry, and retired Denise and Labrador/ Staffordshire bull terrier Batty Nora.

As the midwives set off for their rounds, they get waylaid by Tom, the local curate, and Fred, who are trying to spruce up an old bus outside Nonnatus House. Tom is clearly keen on Trixie and asks if she would like to join him for a day of cricket. She happily accepts and goes back to work with a spring in her step. But, their date is disastrous and she is left feeling disappointed. Patsy appears to be struggling to adapt to the unpredictable and chaotic working life that midwifery brings. She upsets a young mother in the clinic which sees her being taken off midwifery and put on to the district rota. In the course of her work, she forms a bond with a docker, Maurice, and has to work tirelessly to find a diagnosis for his unusual symptoms which in turn reveals more about her own background. Trixie is played by Helen George, Tom by Jack Ashton, Fred by Cliff Parisi, Patsy by Emerald Fennell and Maurice by Neal Barry.

He heads up Hay Bluff on a scooter to the beautiful Llangorse Lake, only to discover swimming is prohibited there. He decides to take to the air in a glider to view the Beacons, then comes back down to earth to explore the area’s famous pot holes. There he discovers the source of the famous Brecon Carreg mineral water. Finally, he finds his perfect mountain lake just beneath Pen Y Fan, the highest point on the Beacons - but will he brave the icy waters?

Sir Max will outline the case for the British Empire’s declaration of war on 4 August 1914. He’ll debate the common argument that the price of participation was so appalling that no purpose could have conceivably justified it. He’ll also trace the complex origins of the war to show that it was not a ‘war by accident’ but a conflict which the Germans, even if they were not directly responsible for its outbreak, could have prevented if they chose. And the film will paint a picture of a German Empire, under Kaiser Wilhelm II, determined on primacy whether by peaceful means or, if necessary, by war. Sir Max argues that for a great power such as Britain, which valued and guarded its freedom and independence above all, the conflict was neither avoidable nor futile.

Boxing is your path.” - Nicola Adams Olympic gold medal-winning boxer Nicola Adams talks to Adam Darke about her life in sport, from her tough upbringing in Leeds to achieving her dream at London 2012. With contributions from trainer Alwyn Belcher, fellow boxer Kid Galahad and her mother Dee, this programme provides a vivid insight into a character who suffered from a lack of funding which nearly forced her to quit boxing, a back injury which set her back several months, yet returned to take Olympic victory over her great rival, Ren Cancan of China. Nicola reveals that as a youngster she looked up to boxers Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard. “It was always a big family thing, everyone would sit around and watch the big fights, we’d always have the re-runs on of Muhammad Ali boxing and Sugar Ray Leonard. It was really really exciting and watching the fights and seeing the crowd, and how everybody cheers, I was just amazed by it all, especially watching some of Muhammad Ali’s fights back, I just thought wow. He gets in there and absolutely destroys all his opponents then outside of the ring he was like totally different person.” But she didn’t take up the sport until at the age of 13 she was taken to an after-school boxing class, which gave her the opportunity to forget about her parents’ split and her mother’s illness through meningitis. “Boxing gave me a bit of stability there was other kids there, they might have had a break-up or some sort of problem going on, and it was nice because you go to that gym and you’d leave your problems outside the door.”

Fiona Kelly’s Royal show! EARLIER this week, Roscoe handed me a piece of paper with the name Fiona Kelly and a telephone number.
I knew the name instantly but couldn’t place it. However, after a quick Google search, all became clear. Fiona appeared on BBC 1’s The Voice this year and 8th February was her last performance on the show, when she sang an operatic arrangement of Take That’s Rule The World. She has been living here during the winter months, performing operatic arias and classical crossover covers. Most of her work is in the five-star hotels, but you can catch Fiona’s show at The Harbour Club in Los Gigantes on a Sunday evening. Although her journey on The Voice has ended, this lady from Aberdeen already had an interesting story to tell because she is a confident, classicallytrained singer.
THE biggest concentration of Tenerife workers has always been around Starco and Veronicas. The workforce in these areas of the Island is as much of an attraction for the younger audiences as a cabaret show would be to, let’s say, our more mature visitors. These workers party hard and work hard and, generally, in that order. However when they all pull together like they all did this week, magical memories are created, as well as raising money for a good cause. IT has now been confirmed that I have the honour of hosting this year’s Tenerife Loves Karaoke … (you know you want it!). The Slave to success
IT is acknowledged as the most exciting night in Britain’s film calendar, but the BAFTA Awards ended in disappointment for the most successful group.
Alfonso Cuarón and the rest of the Gravity crew were delighted to win Best Director and Outstanding British Film during the ceremony, held at the Royal Opera House on Sunday evening. The film collected another impressive four awards, but the two they really coveted Best Film and Leading Actor - went elsewhere. In fact, 12 Years A Slave, a historical drama, was the talk of the town after winning Best Film, with Chiwetel Ejiofor in the starring role proclaimed Leading Actress. Accepting the trophy from Uma Thurman, Chiwetel thanked director Steve McQueen, saying: “Thank you for you work, your artistry and your passion in this project … to make it of such value, of such worth.” Waving the trophy
aloft, he added with a smile: “This is yours by the way. I’m going to keep it. That’s the kind of guy I am. But it’s yours.” The ceremony opened with a performance from Tinie Tempah and Laura Mvula, before Oprah Winfrey handed the award for Outstanding British Film to Gravity, But no sooner did they receive the news that they had won the coveted award, than they found out that they had also picked up Best Sound, Best Original Music, Best Director Cinematography and Special Visual Effects. The specification from the owner was to use browns and golds in muted, tasteful colours, but to achieve the “wow” factor through the quality and style of the furniture and fittings, rather than using bright colours. The client is quite high tech and likes his gadgets, so, apart from ensuring that there were TVs and docking stations everywhere, we also took the opportunity to install a sofa with built-in speakers and controls.

On the same Temperatures wavelength drop to zero I suppose it’s like having a surround-sound system without all the extra components. At first, I thought it was a bit of a boy’s toy, but I must admit that it has grown on me! You can connect it to Bluetooth, to the TV or to your phone, and the controls are in the armrest with the speakers all along the back. It certainly adds a certain dimension to watching a good action film. In actual fact, technology has made some major changes to the furnishings business. Thistles… or are they? By Margaret Tully I FIND myself in recovery mode this week after having an operation on my sinuses.
This means that I cannot smell the beautiful flowers, which is just as well as hubby didn’t buy me a bunch for Valentine’s Day. Seriously, though, I miss smelling the flowers and I thought that this week I would look at flowering plants which appear similar but don’t have any scent. Thistles! You are already conjuring up a spiky, purple-headed flowering plant which grows in brushland, or in Scottish woodlands. This is not necessarily false, but there are thistles - or at least their common names suggest as much - growing right here in the Canaries. I have previously mentioned Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum), which is a favourite plant of mine and I have included it in my “Green Box” for edibles. The problem is identifying it correctly. I know my plants are Milk Thistle because I bought seeds from a reputable herbal supplier, and I have gathered the seeds from my plants over the years. They are so easy to grow here as they love the warm conditions this climate offers. It’s worth repeating the uses of this plant because it has been used in its entirety for hun-
dreds of years by many cultures. I use only the leaves and the seeds now, but you can use the roots and the stem. The plant is excellent for the liver, aiding in cleansing the organ from toxins, such as alcohol. Don’t overdo it though. Just chew a few seeds now and again and use the leaves by cutting away the prickly edges and eating the young leaves in salads, or boiling the older leaves and use as an alternative to spinach.
The plant is strong, with an erect, spineless stem with alternate green leaves that have white mottling on them and are spiky-edged. The flowers rise up with their beautiful purple/pink heads of bristly tips. And, as the plant dies back, the flower heads dry and each one contains lots of seeds. The seeds, or fruits, are black with white, hairy attachments, which are easily removed. This is when it gets confusing. I rescued a plant a few weeks ago.
It had spiky leaves which were green and it had a slight mottling on the leaves just like Milk Thistle. When I got it home it flowered, yet it was not a thistle but, in fact, a poppy-like flower. It was, after identification, found to be the White Prickly Poppy (Argemone albiflora). But if it hadn’t flowered it could easily have been mistaken for a Thistle. It is always wise to wait until a plant flowers, as it is another way to identify it. You can look at the leaves, stem, flowers and seeds. Thistles which are identified as such here in the Canaries are from the Sonchus genus: they are the Sonchus congestus, Sonchus oleraceus and the Sonchus acaulis or Sonchus canariensis, which is known as the Giant Sow Thistle or, in Canarian, the
Cerrajon Mount. It looks like a giant dandelion. I saw one in Cho Pancho some time ago and couldn’t believe my eyes. But I had no idea at the time what it was. They are endemic to Tenerife and Gran Canaria and get their common name because it is said that pigs enjoy eating them. They seem to be edible for humans, too, but I wouldn’t risk it. In La Gomera and El Hierro there is the Sonchus hierrensis which, again, is a Giant Sow Thistle. The leaves are not bristly on any of these plants, yet they are still known commonly as Thistles. They are all in the family Asteraceae which is the daisy family again! In fact, there are absolutely hundreds of daisy types. Growing Milk Thistle If you want your own Milk Thistle plants in your garden space, they are really easy to grow. You can get seeds from other gardeners on the Islands (such as me, if you fancy a seed swap) or you can send away from online companies such as “Mountain Herbs”, who are licensed to send seeds abroad. *Take your seeds and lay them on the top of flattened multi-purpose or seeding compost *Sprinkle a layer of soil over the top to just cover them *Place the tray or pot into a tray of water and allow the earth to become wet *Once this happens, take the pot or tray out of the water and leave in a warm but semi-shad-
ed spot to germinate. *Soon, you will have little seedlings which are so cute. But they grow so quickly and need transplanted as soon as there are four true leaves *Give each plant its own pot and let them develop Once they are too big for their pots and the roots are showing out of the bottom, plant into final position in the garden or, if in pots, plant into 5in pots at least. Soon a flower head will emerge - and then the beautiful flower. Gather seeds for next year and you will never need to buy any seeds again. As the thistle is an ancient Celtic symbol and, in fact, was used as the national emblem for Scotland since 1249, it’s only fair to mention the Scots Thistle (Onopordum acanthium). It is a prickly thistle and was said to pierce the foot of a Norseman who thought that by removing his footwear, he could sneak up on the Scots. Yikes, that must have hurt. In saying this, in those days the Spear thistle (Cirsium vulgare) was abundant in Scotland and so, it could actually be the true Scots Thistle. It is difficult to identify different thistles, let alone plants which are commonly called Thistles. But they are all fascinating, nevertheless. And I hope that when you see the humble Field Sow Thistle or the more impressive Giant Sow Thistle, you look at them more closely and don’t simply brush them off as weeds.
SOW IT… GROW IT… TASTE IT I’m cheating a little this week, but I don’t think Thistle pie would go down to well, But at least the recipe has a “Milk” connection. Homemade Rice Pudding Ingredients *500ml of milk (coconut, semi-skimmed cow’s milk, full-fat cow’s milk) *Handful of short grain
rice *2 tbsp white sugar *2 cardamon pods *1 tsp of jam (strawberry, blackcurrant) Method *Put washed rice into a pot and just cover with water *Bring to the boil and put a lid half on pot and turn heat down to a simmer
*Let the liquid slowly disperse. *Drain off any liquid that may be left - rice should be soft and edible *Take cooked rice and put into the pot again and cover with the 500ml of milk *Bring to the boil and turn heat down immediately to a
simmer *Add the cardamon pods (slightly crushed) *Put a lid half on and
let milk soak into the rice, making it swell even more *When half the milk
has been soaked up, add the sugar, stir to dissolve *Leave pot on slow simmer until all the rice has swelled and there is just a small amount of thick, milky liquid behind. “Serve straight away and add the jam, or leave to cool and add the jam once cold

Even though going to a GP immediately increases the chance of the cancer being caught, some are waiting up to a month after noticing signs. Research reveals that there are concerns about people not knowing how to recognise the signs - or are too embarrassed to describe lumps over the phone. Some patients adopt a stoical approach and decide it is not worth bothering their GP. Britain has one of the worst cancer-survival rates in Europe, and experts believe it may,

cancer check-up partly, be because patients are delaying seeking help. Typical symptoms that patients ignore include a persistent cough, which could signal lung cancer, or a sore throat and ulcers, which could mean throat cancer but are mistaken for a cold. Other symptoms can include general weight loss and tiredness, and delays of a month can be life-threatening. Once reluctant patients eventually see their GP and have a diagnosis, they still have to wait to be referred to hospital for further tests and scans. In fact, it can be several months before treatment begins, by which time the cancer will have spread and become more difficult to treat. Research by the University of Cambridge and University College
London has found that patients with rarer cancers affecting the throat wait the longest. They asked 14,320 cancer patients how long they had waited after first noticing troublesome symptoms before seeing their GP. The average time was 10 days, rising to 22 days for patients with oesophageal cancer, and 30 days for oropharyngeal cancer – both affect the throat. Women were, on average, 10% less likely to wait around than men, who are notoriously reluctant to seek medical help. Sara Hiom, from Cancer Research UK, which commissioned the research, said: “Some symptoms are more obvious than others, so the important thing is to get to know your own body and what’s normal for you.
“When cancer is diagnosed earlier, treatment is usually more effective and the chances of beating the disease are higher.” The study, published in the International Journal of Cancer, found the over-75s were 80% more
likely to see their doctor promptly than younger patients, suggesting they are more alert to the symptoms. And those with more common cancers tended to seek help more quickly. The average time was a week for
breast-cancer patients and six days for prostate cancers. The shortest time was for bladder cancer - two days - and kidney cancer, three. The symptoms for these two tumours are alarming - blood in the urine -which explains why patients do not wait around. Professor Jane Wardle, of University College London, said: “These findings suggest that lack of knowledge about symptoms may play a significant role in any delay in going to get checked out with the doctor, for oropharyngeal and oesophageal cancer.’ In 2011, researchers at King’s College London warned that patients were being too stoical about cancer symptoms, with two-thirds waiting at least a week before making an appointment.
Reasons to miscarry - or are they? ONE in four miscarriages might be preventable if the mum-to-be had paid closer attention to avoidable risks.
That’s according to a Danish team of researchers, whose comprehensive study did not meet with the approval of two eminent professors based in London. The “avoidable risks” included being underweight or obese before conception, and drinking alcohol during pregnancy. The study claims that working nights and lifting heavy loads also increased the chance of miscarriage, as did being in the over-30 age group. It also revealed that if women were able to cut these risk-factors to low levels, 25% of miscarriages could probably be prevented. Each year, 250,000 British women have a
miscarriage. Most happen in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, but up to 10,000 occur at a later stage. Scientists from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, looked at 91,427 pregnancies between 1996 and 2002, of which 3,177 ended in miscarriage
before 22 weeks. At 16 weeks, women were asked about their lifestyle before conception and during pregnancy. Those who had already experienced a miscarriage were asked about their habits before it took place. The study found that age, drinking alcohol,
lifting more than 44lb (20kg), night shifts and being obese or overweight were all associated with miscarriage. Age and alcohol were the most significant factors, said the report in BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. It added: ‘In a pre-
vention scenario where women conceived at the age of 25 to 29 years, consumed no alcohol during pregnancy, were normal weight before pregnancy, did not lift more than 20kg daily during pregnancy, and worked only during the day, 25.2% of miscarriages were preventable. “This scenario resulted in the highest preventable proportion of miscarriage.” Sandra Feodor Nilsson, one of the researchers, said: “Miscarriage is the most common adverse pregnancy outcome, affecting at least one in seven pregnancies.” Half of all miscarriages result from chance abnormalities in the baby’s chromosomes, which can cause the mother’s body to reject the foetus. Professor Tom Bourne, a consultant gynaecologist at London’s Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital, said: “This is a big study, but it does
not really say anything new. There are also issues of recall bias, and the fact that they show an association rather than causation. “Saying that by changing X or Y, a percentage of miscarriages could be prevented is quite a statement in the absence of an interventional trial. However, it does add to the view that alcohol in pregnancy is not a good idea.” Patrick Wolfe, a professor of statistics at University College London, also disagreed with the team’s conclusions, saying: ‘This study does not establish a causal relationship between its reported risk factors and miscarriage. “The study has several statistical limitations, and so I caution that its conclusions may be subject to over-interpretation.” He stressed that it should not be seen as “the last word” on the issue.

THICKER, FULLER SHINIER HAIR… A REAL MIRACLE By Carl from Robot

THE headline made you look, didn’t it? And if only this were true. Sadly, it’s just clever marketing, using words to confuse and deceive.
IN a previous article, I mentioned that the award season had begun and how important fashion was for making a statement.
And I’m not talking about rip-off merchants or some wheeler-dealer, either. I’m talking about some of your regular hair-care manufacturers who claim to have miracles in bottles, and new ways to give you what you don’t have, or yearn to have, when you see the adverts on TV or in a magazine. I have talked about this subject before, but the hype seems to be getting worse - advert after advert about THE new shampoo, or THE must-have home haircolour. Time and time again, I see advertisements about products that simply cannot do what they claim to be saying. For instance, a make of home hair-colorant which says it “blends together three salon tones to create multi-tonal hilites”. In reality, this is impossible to do with one tube of colour at home. It requires the use of foil hi-liting and the application of different colours to achieve this. The one colour in a box will NOT give you this effect - end of story, no matter what the makers
claim. Another is a certain hair-colour company which uses a wellknown TV presenter to promote its colours. She’s shown with a full head of luxurious, thick hair, claiming she uses a home hair-colorant! In reality, she has very fine, wispy hair - and, obviously, I cannot imagine her sitting at home trying to create a salon-quality colour when she earns a fortune. And what about those shampoos which claim to “cut out salon visits” because their ingredients “seal” split-ends and thus, prolong your next salon visit for a haircut? Absolute fantasy! Then there are the hair-thickening products, which say they will create volume and a full head of voluptuous tresses. Check out the advert. The girl featured has had a professional blow dry, and whoever created the look has used a tin of hairspray! If I can see this, then I hope you can, too. Always read the small print at the bottom of the ad. Check out the claim
that “72% of women tested agreed”. Yes, they did, and 28% said they didn’t agree! But they don’t put that last bit in. It’s there in front of you to see, but you don’t ever read it, do you? I don’t even know how they get past Trading Standards. But then, THE biggest hair-care brand is owned by the world’s biggest company. They make breakfast cereals, so is their heart in their clients who buy their hair-care products, or are they only interested in your pockets? I’m not saying “don’t buy anything from anywhere but a salon”, but what I am asking you to do is think before you buy. Ask yourself if the claims being made are really achievable, or pure fantasy? Is the product doing what it claims, or pulling the wool over your eyes? I can’t decide for you because it’s your money. But it’s me who has to put things right when what you are using, or what you have used, has had an adverse effect.

Well, one of the films nominated for the Oscars this year has been noted for its fashion alone. American Hustle is set in the Seventies and, therefore, the clothing depicts what was in fashion at the time. Love or loathe the Seventies, the fashion was iconic with flares, platforms, big hair and beards. The film has actually brought back how dramatic the fashion was. Hadley Freeman, who writes for the Guardian, asks: “Did people really dress like this? She even goes on to say that the Oscar the film should receive is for costume and hair, because of the outlandish hairstyles and clothing. In her article, she goes on to say that those born after the late Eighties will look on this film and not believe that people actually looked like
that. Hadley’s image of how previous fashion trends are perceived by those who did not experience them is all wrong. Her view is: “In order to prevent such disasters as the Seventies style returning, we should always dress with one eye on how future generations will mock us.” I cannot agree with her because, to me, this is what fashion is all about and how it has been depicted in each decade: the Sixties, short skirts: early Eighties, punk and New Romantics are such examples. Part of fashion is having fun, and having worn one
of these trends at one time or another brings back memories, good or bad, of being at a disco or party; maybe even dancing round your handbag. It is better to have these memories, (even if the photographs make you squirm) of having worn these fashions in the disco or out on the town, than looking back and not having had the fun experiences which come with these clothes. My own personal fashion journey had me as a child in flared cords with a bowl haircut, to wearing a peach puff ball at the school disco, moving on to college and university in my Stone Roses T-shirt and purple kickers. I do look back on these memories as some of the most fun of my life. Oh, not forgetting, of course, my wedding dress and maternity jeans - two of my most memorable fashion choices.

A real Shanghai EVEN for longterm residents, there are parts of Las Americas which are still to be discovered.
Some areas are in need of regeneration, while there are newer commercial centres or strips popping up. And the Gourmetland group seem to understand this concept. They have created an amazing new row of restaurants behind the Safari centre and Hotel Vulcano, next door to the popular Parque de la Paz strip of bars. The area is immaculately clean, grass freshly cut and with some lovely flowers, shrubs and arrangements. Love India we have reviewed before, and I’m looking forward to visiting Melrose’s in a few weeks. And this week we enjoyed the beautiful Shanghai Chic. I’ve been looking forward to the visit, as I do all
of Gourmetland’s restaurants. But this time there was a sense of excitement. Shanghai Chic has couple of staff from Oriental Garden, including
the manager, Johnny. And I was keen to find out how similar they were and, also, whether SC would find its own direction. The old mantra “if it’s
not broke, don’t fix it” is very true. While Shanghai Chic does retain the OG feel and spirit, it certainly has a different voice. And don’t let the
name make you feel pigeon-holed. There are strong Chinese dishes, of course, but there are just as many Thai and Japanese options, as well as the unique Tibetan Tandoori. Now this we will cover on a separate visit, but if you are a regular diner, ask yourself this. Have you ever seen, let alone tried, Tibetan food? You know what you have to do. I’m sure you have seen the “kitchen nightmare” shows on TV. You know, the ones where Gordon Ramsey or Robert Irvine turn around failing restaurants. One of the things they change is the menu normally slicing down a 50-dish menu to one that is barely a dozen.
Now, while this might work in the deep south of America, or in New York, there are strong reasons for doing the exact opposite in somewhere like Shanghai Chic. And their near-200dish menu will be one of the keys to their success. Ordering is hard. Very hard. Nearly as hard as watching the other tables eating what you would like to try as well. For example, one of the tables next to us had Canton-style baby back ribs, Citrus Duck, Thai chicken and a Korean barbeque. To the other side, there was a delightful French family enjoying Sashimi Moriwase, Angus Te Maki, Amberjack Nigiri and Ox Maki. I had just to order some of the Ox Maki. Beef sushi? Seriously, as they say in advertising, it’s a must! As I mentioned, it’s the menu options that grab you at Shanghai Chic. And it’s different from Oriental Garden. In fact, you could visit 20 or 30 Asian restaurants and never stumble across these dishes, flavours or concepts. Eventually, we went for a variety of starter-dishes, and a special main course. Along with the mentioned Ox Maki, we enjoyed the Galician Mussels, Har Gau, Sui Mai and Massaman meatballs. The Galician Mussels were completely new to me. They are whole Mussels served inside the shell with coconut

surprise milk and spicy, Thai flavourings. The sauce is so rich and spicy that you want to order some bread to mop up the sauce. The Har Gau comprises gorgeous shrimp dumplings, which you dip in a soy-and-ginger sauce. It’s so hard to cook correctly and requires some skill. As does the Sui Mai, which is a similar Pork dumpling. But where the Har Gau is closed, the Sui Mai is an open dumpling. They were both stunning. The Massaman meatballs were nice and spicy Thai beef balls with a tangy coconut sauce. Again, it was something completely different. The main dish was on the manager’s recommendation. Johnny suggested the Tibetan Tandoori Jumbo Prawns. These were whole king prawns with ginger and galangal. They were so perfectly cooked that the flesh eased away from the
shell, and the ginger brought it alive. It took all of five seconds to fall in love with Tibetan food. To accompany, we tried the beef fat noodles with sweet chilli and mint. Chilli and mint? Really? Yes, really! As with all Gourmetland restaurants, the wine list was extensive, the staff as friendly as they come - and the toi-
lets spotless. The opencooking system adds a lovely atmosphere. The restaurant is outside, but it’s not cold because the heaters will help you feel at home. Shanghai Chic at the moment is a great little secret, but it will not stay that way. Shanghai Chic? Go for the food, and you’ll come back for the menu. For reservations, call 922 789 518

Our not-sosupermarkets! IT MAKES you want to throw up! You arrive home from your weekly shopping at the supermarket and proudly hand over your two-for-one bargain. Only for your husband to point out that it would have been cheaper for you to buy the items individually. Sadly, supermarkets seem more than happy to baffle us with special offers which are far from special. An investigation by consumer association Which? has revealed the confusing tactics used by shops to encourage spending Cadbury’s Giant Creme Eggs were priced at £10 in Tesco and Sainsbury’s in February last year. They were then on offer at Tesco for £8 and at Sainsbury’s for £6.66 from March onwards. Another common tactic used was putting
signs for offers near to products not included in the deal. Marks & Spencer put a “2 for £4” sign near to packets of mixed grapes, but the fruits next to the sign weren’t included in the offer. Which? also found evidence that certain products were made smaller, but the price remained the same, or even more. For example, in Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons, the price of Persil Small and Mighty Biological Colour Liquid increased, despite the size decreasing by 17%. Which? also discovered a bigger “value” pack didn’t always mean better value, - and buying smaller packs or separate items often worked out cheaper. Many stores placed £1 signs on products - such as bags of spinach at Tesco - despite the item always costing the same
price. Which? executive director, Richard Lloyd, said: “We’ve uncovered pricing tactics that make shopping for your weekly groceries look like tackling an obstacle course.” A Tesco spokesman told Which?: “We use £1 labels to draw attention to our good prices. We believe customers recognise it isn’t a special offer.” A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “The use of ‘Only £1’ doesn’t indicate a special offer - just great value. Customers buy Easter eggs from the moment we stock them. This egg was competitively-priced even before discount.” Asda said: “We would never deliberately mislead customers on price, while M&S said: “All our products have a shelf-edge label next to them, stating the price and promotional details.”

LOVE AND MARRIAGE
By Monica Dyson HOW was Valentine’s Day for you in the Canary Islands? Frank Sinatra sang “Love and Marriage, go together like a Horse and Carriage”. But do they really go together in today’s society? Valentine’s Day used to be a popular date for marriage proposals. But, it’s amazing how different family structures have become in the UK over the past 60 years, with engagements and weddings having much less importance than they used to have. When I was a teenager I knew girls who had “got into trouble”, becoming pregnant out of wedlock and, very often, “having to get married” Sometimes, with the help of their families, they didn’t get married and brought up the child as a single mother. Sometimes, the child was brought up by the girl’s parents as her sibling. And sometimes, they went away to a home to have the baby and had it adopted. Being a single mum didn’t seem to be the career choice which, it seems, many young women make today. I’m not generalising here, but, whenever I travel on a bus or tram, there seems to be scores of young mums without wedding rings. The reports in our local press of babies born over Christmas and New Year referred for the most part to “partners” rather than Mr and Mrs. A leading family lawyer said recently that, in her opinion, marriage was as important to the na-
tion as climate change and poverty. She said that the growing number of families without fathers was doing more harm to the next generation than factors such as smoking, alcohol, poor diet and lack of exercise. She warned that a conspiracy of silence surrounded the issue because political leaders were afraid to say that married families were better for children than cohabiting families, or single parents. With exceptions, of course. I have two good friends who each brought up a child as a single mother, and, some 40 or 50 years later, can look upon it as a job well done. Their respective daughters became successful, happy and confident people. However, their mothers would be the first to admit that it wasn’t easy; least of all the stigma they encountered, and the financial problems.
Although the divorce rate in the UK is high, married parents are, apparently, more likely to stay together during a child’s formative years, with children of single mothers having greater problems than those of cohabitee or married parents. It has been said that the problems started in the Eighties, when it became easy for single mothers to obtain a council house and benefits. Thus, it made the single state one of independence - and a way of leaving the parental home. But things were very much different in the Fifties and Sixties, and I wonder if the cost of today’s weddings is a good enough reason for many young couples choosing to remain unmarried at a time when marriage levels in Britain are at an all-time low.
Cohabitation has risen 64% in a decade, with almost half of children now born outside of wedlock. In the old days, you didn’t live together. You got married from your parents’ house. It was unheard of for any young person to buy a house of his/her own. And a woman would have needed a male guarantor to even rent a flat. Courtships were long, while “saving to get married”, with the wedding traditionally being paid for by the bride’s father, who would have usually been asked for his daughter’s hand in marriage! Once engaged, you would start collecting your “bottom drawer”, which would be full of things like tablecloths and tea-towels. There was no such thing as wedding registries at stores like John Lewis. You could be
asked what you would like for a wedding gift or, there again, you might not be and end up with three toasters. The wedding and reception would have been booked at least a year in advance, always on a Saturday, often clashing with some football fixture. Unless, of course, the prospective groom put his foot down and insisted that the wedding be held out of season. That didn’t happen very often because the wishes of the bride and, more importantly of her mother, were law! There had to be plenty of time for the purchase of a wedding dress and bridesmaids’ dresses, and to book the venue for the wedding breakfast, as there wasn’t the choice there is today. There would be a sitdown meal after the service, with no evening reception and no wedding planner or Master of
Ceremonies to formalise the proceedings. The meal, often held at the Co-op, would be plain and simple. No favours, no chocolate fountains, no mock magazine covers; just a meal, toasts and speeches. At some point during the afternoon, the bride would get changed into her “going away outfit” and the whole wedding party would then wave the happy couple off on honeymoon, usually somewhere like Torquay. Towards the end of the Sixties, an evening event started to become popular to accommodate all those people who were not considered important enough to be asked to the main event! There was usually music but, funnily enough, if there were a live band, no one ever danced to them - only to the records during the band’s interval! Even then, weddings were an expensive business, but the cost of stag and hen “dos” were minimal compared with today. They usually took place on one evening, often at the Black Swan or the Locarno. No week-long affairs in Magaluf with customised T-shirts, L-plates or bridal headdresses. And when it was over and the happy couple were happily living either in a home of their home or with in-laws, it started, didn’t it! “When are you starting a family? You don’t want to leave it too late, you know!” Remaining a childless couple by choice really wasn’t an option, not in those days! A giggle for you – Little boy asked his father: “How much does it cost to get married, Daddy?” His father replied: “I don’t know son, I’m still paying for it!”

Bernie Bucket time again T O N I G H T (Friday) is the cue for Bernie Bucket’s annual fund-raiser for Cancer Research UK at Showtime, Las Americas.
Previous years with her at Showtime have proved hugely successful, with a plethora of the Island’s artistes performing, and prizes galore. They have all been donated by many local businesses, with some worth hundreds of euros.
We spoke with Bernie earlier in the week, and she is again overwhelmed by the show of support from Tenerife’s residents. Bernie has been a fulltime fund-raiser for CRUK for five years, and she has been instrumental in generating more than 150,000 euros in that time. McLAREN Automotive are sure to wow the crowds at next month’s Geneva International Motor Show with their fastest, series -production supercar of all.
The McLaren 650S joins the range as an additional model alongside the 12C and soldout McLaren P1™. The designers have lifted knowledge from both models, as well as utilising the company’s 50 years’ experience of competing at the highest motorsport levels. The new, greasedlightning machine will be available as a fixedhead coupé or as a Spider, with a retractable folding hard top. It will almost certainly redefine the high-performance supercar segment, and has been designed and developed to provide the ultimate drive for those behind the wheel on race track or road. The 650S badge designation refers to the power output - 650PS (641 bhp) - of the unique
British-built McLaren M838T twin-turbo V8 engine. The S, which stands for Sport, underlines the focus and developments made to handling, transmission, drivability and engagement. Performance figures of the speedster, costing from £190,000, will be confirmed ahead of the Geneva Show (between 6-16th March), and they’re likely to be 0-62mph in three seconds, with a top speed of 207mph. Whatever the outcome, they will definitely improve on the already-rapid 12C, which will continue to be sold. The design is inspired by the McLaren P1™, previewing a new fami-
ly-design language. The front bumper gives this new McLaren a dramatic, yet clean appearance and sits below new LED headlamps, which reflect a similar look to the McLaren P1™. The more integrated front splitter contributes to increased levels of downforce, giving a greater level of steering feeling and confidence to the driver on turnin, while also adding to the agility and the car’s handling balance. Unique door blades behind the front wheels direct air from the trailing edges of the front splitter, further benefiting front-end grip and vehicle balance. Its aerodynamic performance is as efficient as the 12C, boasting
the same drag coefficient figure, yet the air is being worked harder and more efficiently as it flows over, and through, the functional bodywork. At 150 mph, downforce levels are increased by 24%. McLaren Automotive chief Mike Flewitt says: “As always with McLaren, the new design is there for good engineering reasons. “The newly-designed front bumper improves downforce and steering turn-in. The highspeed handling balance is now even better, and the LED lights use less power and last longer.” Unique side intakes behind the dihedral doors feed large, efficientlypackaged radiators, which help provide the
cooling requirements of the mid-mounted, compact engine. The five-spoke, lightweight, forged 650S alloy wheels are unique to the model, and are fitted with Pirelli P Zero™ Corsa tyres to offer optimised road-holding, handling and driver feedback. The 650S builds on experience from success on the track, and ground-breaking technologies fitted to other McLaren models. Active aerodynamics, which feature on both the 12C and McLaren P1™, have been further developed and honed to ensure the ultimate performance. The McLaren Airbrake, originally fitted to the 12C and 12C Spider and designed to offer optimised levels of downforce on the rear of the car, now operates at an even greater level, providing increased stability. The newly-developed system means the Airbrake deploys whenever the car senses that extra downforce is advisable - rather than simply under-braking, or when manually operated in Aero mode. By Emma Swain WHEN you are considering buying a car - new, second-hand or upgrading your current model there are many things to consider. Firstly, you should decide on your budget and have a contingency plan in case the car you fall in love with is a little more expensive than your budget. Once you have decided on how much you can afford, you should factor in any other costs, including insurance and potential transfer costs. A lot of cars sold in-
clude the cost of transfer in the price, or it can be negotiated if you are a serious buyer. The costs of both new and second-hand cars vary from make to make, and from UK prices. In general, new cars here tend to be sometimes a little cheaper than in the UK. But second-hand cars hold their value and are more expensive than the identical model in the UK. Part of the reason for this is that we are on a small island and there are substantially fewer cars than, for example, on mainland Spain. Both the transfer costs
and insurance premiums differ from the UK, where to change ownership is fairly straightforward and involves simply filling out a form and sending it off to Swansea DVLA. Here, the cost of transferring a car can be quite substantial, depending on the make, model and engine size, as well as age and official valuation of the vehicle. Also, it cannot be completed unless the purchaser has an NIE number and/or a Residencia, an in-date Passport and proof of address, such as a Certificate of Empadronmiento or Registered Escritura.
Once you have decided on your budget, you should ascertain which size car you want - 2,4,5,7 or 9 seats and whether you want manual or automatic transmission, as this will affect the type of vehicle you can look at. It is not such a good idea here to set your sights on a specific make and model because, quite often, they are just not available. A woman will tend to choose a car by size and colour, such as a white Seat Ibiza, whereas a man will consider more practical options, like engine size,
fuel consumption and, generally, size as the last thing. Women tend to prefer a smaller car, probably because it’s easier to find a parking space on all their shopping trips! You should always insist on a test drive, and ask when the cam belt was last changed. If this has not been carried out, it should be done as a matter of priority - dependant on the vehicle’s age and mileage. By test-driving a car, you will get a feel of how it suits your needs, even though you may be a little nervous at the time. People often start

A point gained, or two lost?

CD Tenerife 1 Real Zaragoza 1 AT the start of the season, even at the start of the match, I think most fans would have taken a draw at home to Real Zaragoza.
On paper, on teletext, it’s a fine point. However, but for one minute of madness, it would have been three fine points. But on reflection, it was a fair result. Both sides squandered chances to take all the spoils. Tenerife were let down by some poor finishing, while young keeper Roberto produced some decent stops to deny the visitors. But it was his one moment of madness, six minutes from time, which gifted Zaragoza a point. It happens with young keepers. They produce some good saves and the adrenaline comes rushing to the surface. A free-kick is drifted in, and it looks like an easy pluck. But suddenly, you are 10 yards off your line
and the ugly defender is five inches taller. And then, bang, the ball is in the onion bag. Zaragoza bossed the early exchanges, but Tenerife opened the scoring midway through the first half. Some dogged wing play from Suso produced a lovely

would hang on. Roberto’s error spurred the hosts forward and Ayoze nearly stole the winner from a fine inswinging corner-kick. Then another Suso corner gifted Aridane a chance, which went begging. It was a fine match, and manager Alvaro Cervera would have been pleased with the attitude, commitment and fight. This was a million times better than the Alcorcon or Sabadell debacles. For a brief moment on Saturday, Tenerife were flirting with the play-offs. In fact, had they held on to win, they would be in eighth place rather than the 14th they now occupy. This division is THAT crazy. Bottom team Mirandes are just seven points off the play-offs, while four points separate the bottom 12. Who will go down or make the play-offs is anyone’s guess. But the tight table has led to some nervy chairmen pulling the trigger. There is a lot to like about Cordoba, but their manager Carrion went on Monday. They have not won for
four matches, and he has been replaced by former CDT, Barca and Chelsea defender Albert Ferrer. It’s a great opportunity for him. Elsewhere, Mallorca’s director of football was fired on Tuesday as he tried to sack manager Jose Luis Oltra. The replacement names were not acceptable to their owner, so Serra Ferrer was sacked. Oltra gets a stay of execution, and it’s win or bust for the Islanders when they take on Mirandes on Saturday. Las Palmas coach Sergio Lobera has been given the dreaded vote of confidence. The Gran Canarians have the worst record in the league in 2014, and have not scored for four matches. Tomorrow (Saturday), they host Girona, who scored six last week! And Tenerife face the side Girona battered. Lugo have had another fine season and they just had one of those days at the office, it seems. It took Girona half-an-hour to score, and then they popped one in every 10 minutes. Lugo are a small club, even in this league. They
are a smart, compact side who are normally build on their solid defence! In fact before Girona, they hadn’t conceded in four matches and they were nicely positioned in the play-offs. They will be desperate to get back to winning ways but, for a side at the top end of the table, they don’t score many. They are happy to sit deep, soak up pressure and hit on the counter or set-piece. This is not the way to play Tenerife. If they invite CDT forward, they could be in trouble. And Cervera has options. Edgar and Juanjo have given him some fresh choices since joining last month. And with Aridane fully fit, he could spring a couple of shocks. Chechu and Nano are certainly out, while it may be too soon to risk Borja and Aday. Sunday’s match kicks off a tricky little run of matches, and a point would be perfect acceptable. But in many ways, the match revolves around Lugo. Would an early Tenerife goal shatter the fragile confidence?

IT really will be a case of who blinks first as we approach the last few months of the season.
The race to win the Direct Telecom 8 Ball Pool League looks like going to the wire. Champions Tenerife Hammers A are still in the top spot, but the gap is just one point - and Gaffers A are keeping up the pressure. Hammers were in action at Terrace Bar A down on Amarilla Golf this week, and it certainly wasn’t a match for the purists. Both teams made mistakes, but the difference on the night was in-form Jambo. He bagged two 8-ball clearances, and both against new Terrace player Sergio! Ouch. Hammers dropped a few soft frames, but they squeezed over the line and bagged the points. Meanwhile, Hammers’ C team were looking to do them a favour in Torviscas. They gave Gaffers A a real match. The scoreline flattered Gaffers, though, and Hammers C should have taken a point.
Third spot in the league looks to have been already decided, with Phoenix Knights having a nine-point cushion over the team in fourth. They kept up their winning ways with a victory over fellow-Los Abrigos team La Caña A, who are fourth. Phoenix Potters were hoping to move a little closer to La Caña but slipped up at Exiles A, who were value for their win. But Potters have two games in hand over La Caña and, if they can get the points, they will move above them and closer to their stablemates, the Knights. Palms A have started to go through the gears, picking another three points up by beating basement boys Toscales A. They look well-placed for a top-six finish, while The Peacocks improved their league position, moving out of the bottom three with a solid win over The Treehouse A. Premier League Preview By Adi Benson IT’S hard to believe that there are just a dozen games to go, and still nothing is becoming any clearer.
Four teams are capable of winning the league - maybe even five if Spurs carry on winning. And at the bottom, there are 11 teams who could possible get relegated. What a finish we have in store! Chelsea v Everton (Saturday, 12.45pm) It may help Chelsea to play first this weekend, as a win would put down a great marker, but they will need to be on their game. Everton are still a hard team to beat, and we know Chelsea have really lacked a strike force, so this could make it difficult for them. Should Everton get a result, then the title race really gets interesting. Prediction: Draw West Ham v Soton) (Saturday, 3pm) West Ham have had a couple of decent wins recently, and they have moved up to 11th. Yet they are still just four points off the relegation places. They will need to continue their good run if they want to avoid a nervy ending to the season. Southampton will be disappointed with the way they played in their recent FA Cup game. They are eighth and have no chance of a Champions League place. Their boss
doesn’t want Europa League football, so is it season over for The Saints? Prediction; Away win West Brom v Fulham (Saturday, 3pm) This is a massive match. West Brom are just outside the relegation places, courtesy of a better goal difference than Sunderland, and Pepe Mel has not set the league alight since he arrived as manager. He is desperate for the win, as are Fulham. This week, Felix Magath is the manager and, at this rate, it could be me in charge next weekend. Despite being bottom they haven’t looked too bad over the last couple of games, and I think they can get the better of West Brom. Prediction: Away win Man City v Stoke (Saturday, 3pm) I am not sure I would want to be a Stoke player tomorrow. City will be hurting after losing to Barcelona in midweek,
and they’ll be itching to punish somebody - and Stoke are in the firing line. City have been scoring for fun at home, although the last few games have been a little quieter. They will attack from the start and try to put the game to bed early. We know Stoke can be good defensively, but they will have to be on their A game to keep the score respectable. That said, will former City boss Mark Hughes cause an upset? Prediction: Home win Cardiff v Hull (Saturday, 3pm) Cardiff cannot seem to get out of the bottom three, but these are the games they have to win. They have home advantage and they really need their fans to get behind them. They worked hard to get promotion to the Premier League and now they need to work twice as hard again to stay there.
Hull started off brightly and had a good first half of the season. But lately they have looked a shadow of that team. Steve Bruce has a winning mentality from his days at Man Utd, and he will need to instil it into his players as we enter the home stretch. Prediction: Away win Arsenal v Sunderland (Saturday, 3pm) Arsenal avenged the mauling they received against Liverpool in the league by knocking them out of the FA Cup on Sunday, but they did not play well. They were better against Bayern Munich on Wednesday and lost! So watch out Sunderland! The Gunners are hurting. However, Sunderland are a resilient side and are fighting with their backs against the wall. I expect a tough game, with Sunderland trying to ruffle Arsenal’s feathers with a physical approach. Prediction: Home win
C Palace v Man Utd (Saturday, 5.30pm) Under normal circumstances, you would go for a United win in this fixture every time. But this season has not been normal for them and Palace will believe they can get points here. The fear factor has gone now, and Tony Pulis knows how best to use the resources he has. He will relish putting a side out against United, and I feel Palace will attack from the first whistle and try for an early goal. David Moyes cannot afford any more slip ups. Prediction: Draw Newcastle v Aston Villa (Sunday, 1,30pm) Newcastle are safe this season and don’t really have anything to play for, which might explain their performances of late. Alan Pardew will disagree with that, yet they have lost their last four home matches, and the rumour is that he will be fired if that becomes five. He de-
serves better than that. Villa are still embroiled in the relegation fight, and they badly need the three points. They still play some nice football and they will feel the points are there for the taking if they can keep it tight early on. Prediction: Away win Liverpool v Swansea (Sunday, 1,30pm) Brendan Rodgers welcomes his old club to Anfield and he must be a happy man. His Reds are just four points off the top spot and, after the FA Cup defeat, Liverpool have no distractions. In recent seasons, they have struggled to beat the clubs below them. But they bump into a Swansea team who had a tough fixture against a good Napoli side last night (Thursday) in the Europa League. If Liverpool start fast, they could easily get five or six. Prediction: Home win Norwich v Spurs (Sunday, 4pm) Just one point off the relegation places, Norwich have got to start winning games. But they have suffered from a lack of goals despite spending big in the summer. Chris Hughton is in danger of losing his job, although Norwich have never been in the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Spurs are flying. Adebayor is like a new signing, scoring goals for fun again, and they are just three points off fourth spot. They will be looking to keep the pressure on Liverpool, and you can’t see beyond another three points for them here. And after that? Well, I’ve seen worse 100-1 shots than Spurs for the title. Prediction: Away win
