Pervert priest pays the price... after 20 years C AT H O L I C priest Francis Paul Cullen, the paedophile who hid out in Tenerife for more than 20 years, has admitted 21 counts of indecent assault on seven children.
The incidents, involving boys and girls aged six to 16, happened from 1957 to 1991- the year he retired - around the Derbyshire and Nottingham areas. And the local police authority believes there are definitely more of his victims out there. “Given the length of the offending history of this investigation, which lasted from 1955 to 1991, I believe it is inconceivable that there are not more victims of this man’s crimes,” said Derbyshire Police DC Matt Goodwin, who urged them to come forward now. Cullen, who appeared at Derby Crown Court on Monday, was first arrested in Nottingham shortly after retiring. But the 85-year-old Dubliner skipped bail and fled to Tenerife, where he lived in Los Cristianos for about 15 years before being evicted for non-payment of community fees, amounting to thousands of euros. After police circulated a description, a Playa de Las Americas priest recognised him and set the wheels in motion for Cullen to be arrested. Derbyshire Police DC Matt Goodwin said it took more than 20 years to trace him because “he did not want to be found”. He added: “We had some concrete information in 2012, from the Catholic Safeguarding Board, that Father Cullen had been living in Tenerife. “It was the start of us getting a European warrant to get him back to this country.” Mysteriously, the investigation was inter-
rupted when the warrant for his arrest was withdrawn in 2000, after he had been on the run for nine years – and no one seems to know why. It was reopened when another victim came forward in 2005. A new warrant was issued for Cullen’s arrest. And that’s when Derbyshire Police became involved. Investigating officer DC Cullen said he used his position in the church to intimidate his victims, and carried out the sexual abuse on church and school premises as well as in his home, a caravan and a hotel. Cullen’s abuse had had a “significant impact” on his victims and some who were abused repeatedly had been “deeply traumatised” by the experience, added
the officer. “His main weapon of control was the fact that he was a Catholic priest, and the power of his position over those in that faith is what kept them quiet. “A recurring theme is whenever a victim realised that what was happening was wrong and started to withdraw or go to church less, then the abuse would stop.” The first recorded complaint made to Derbyshire Police was in 2005 by a man who said he was abused by Cullen between the ages of eight and 16 in the Sixties, when the priest was based in Mackworth. The allegations were investigated but Cullen could not be traced. A year later, a woman told police she had been abused by Cullen
from the age of six to 12 in Buxton during the Eighties - Cullen was parish priest there from 1978-87. Over the following years, the case was reopened and closed three times as new evidence came to light. But Cullen could still not be found. Then, in 2011, DC Goodwin became involved in the investigation and his inquiries led to the discovery of Cullen’s whereabouts. Cullen, who went by the name of Raul Martin, is believed to have lived openly in the Los Cristianos complex Los Alisios for about 15 years, before being booted out. Father Jose Estevex Herrar, parish priest of the nearby Nuestra Senora del Carmen Church, said Cullen had attended services “once or twice a month”. He added: “Once, perhaps two years ago, he told me he was a priest. I was surprised. I had seen him before - just a normal person - and suddenly, he’s a priest. “It was impossible to think of that man coming here regularly and then, suddenly, he was a criminal. Not in Asia, Australia, Thailand but here, in a European community. “He was a normal person among the others from what I could see, of course.”
But Cullen kept his head down, so much so that few locals in Cristianos were aware of him. Miguel Gutierrez said: “We knew nothing of the priest until we saw the police activity. If this man lived here for as long as they say, then it is amazing - we never noticed him.” German Beatein Weber, 47, who also lives and works in the same area, said: “I spoke with the police because we had heard about an arrest. They said he had been keeping himself quiet – as if he were living like a ghost. “We saw this man two, maybe three times, either in a local bar or taking his shopping home, but nothing more than that.” Cullen, the first priest appointed to the newly-formed Christ the King church in the Mackworth parish of Derbyshire in 1960, was in residence there until 1978. He abused some of his victims over many years, and police said they were all connected to the church - including altar boys. Father Andrew Cole, spokesman for the Diocese of Nottingham which covers the areas in which Cullen worked - said: “We have been working closely with the police throughout the preparation of this
case, both before and after Cullen’s arrest in Tenerife. “We have encouraged them to bring him to justice and are grateful to them. I am also pleased that he has taken responsibility for his terrible crimes. “I would like to offer our sympathy to those who have been affected by this tragedy in any way, and I assure them that we will do whatever we can to support them. “I also wish to thank Cullen’s victims for their bravery in coming forward after many years of silence; it is due to them that Cullen has pleaded guilty. “Nothing can take away the horror of what happened to them, but I hope that the verdict will help them in some small way to find peace. “He was probably a charismatic priest - I have heard that said about him - but he abused that position of trust. “There will be people who remember him fondly, but I hope that’s tempered by the shadow side of his life.” Father Cole added: “The Catholic Church takes the safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults extremely seriously, and it is our hope and expectation that no child or vulnerable adult should ever suffer at the hands of others. “We will continue to work with the police and other statutory authorities whenever allegations of abuse arise, and will ensure that our churches and parishes are safe and welcoming for all members of the community.” Cullen, who was ordained in May 1953, was an assistant priest in Leicester before moving into the same role at the Church of Christ the King in Alfreton. He was parish priest in Buxton from 197887 and in Hyson Green, Nottingham, from 19881991. He is now in custody and will be sentenced at the same court on 24th March.

We’re on our way up, insists Prime Minister SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is adamant that the gloomy, recession days are finally over.
“We are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel,” he told ministers during the Government control session in the Upper House of Parliament. “There are more people registered with the Social Security System today than there were a year ago, and the long period of continual job losses has come to an end.” Rajoy also pledged that the Government will maintain its reform plans, because, he said:
“This is what Spain needs to prepare for the future. He said the reforms included those of the public administration services, the active employment policies and training system, the en-
ergy system, and matters relating to market unity. “We will implement the tax system reform, we will create the Spanish State Agency for Research and we will adopt deregulation measures
in the transport sector, starting with the railways,” he added. Rajoy insisted that Government decisions already taken by the Government had enabled the country to overcome a financial
crisis, a sovereign debt crisis and a bailout. “We have improved Spain’s competitiveness and have resolved the tariff deficit in the electricity sector,” he said. “The most positive result is the end of our recession, in light of the fact that the long period of continued job losses came to an end in late 2013.” “Today, there are more people registered with the Social Security System than there were a year ago, and that has not been the case in Spain for six years. “It will be a better year in 2014, with economic growth of 0.7% and net job creation for the first time since 2007.” Rajoy was responding to José Montilla,
spokesperson for Entesa del Progrés de Catalunya, and the Grupo Socialista’s Marcelino Iglesias, who asked about the Government’’ political initiatives to overcome the economic, social and regional crisis. Rajoy also announced this week that workers earning under 12,000 euros a year will be exempt from paying income tax from next year. During his State of the Nation address, Rajoy said the move, to ease the tax burden on the middle and lower classes, means 12 million people will benefit. There will also be further tax breaks for families, and those living with disabled relatives.
Slot machines Row over falling running wild ‘op’ waiting lists SLOT machines are meant to be checked every four years, unless they break down sooner, according to the applicable regulations.
But since the order was made, the fouryearly checks have not been carried out in the Canaries. It means up to 12,000 machines could be running outside the “win” parameters set by the internal chips. The chip responsible for monitoring a machine’s performance is housed inside the machine itself, and is installed when the machine is purchased. It chip records the outcome of every game and, for example, each time a machine is spun 40,000 times, at 20 cents per spin, the payout should be 75%. If this is not happening, it is possible the machine has been tampered with, and is not paying out as it should. To verify the chips, they are removed from the machine and tested against a control machine.
MORE than 27,000 people in the Canaries were awaiting surgery at the end of 2013, which was an 8.5% drop on the previous year.
If they pass the test, they are replaced and sealed, and a label is applied to the exterior of the machine to confirm it has been verified and is playing as it should be. Checks have to be carried out by an authorised agent, and in the case of the Canary Islands, this is the Canaries Technological Institute (ITC). Teams are already trained to carry out the checks, but have not yet done so. And, bearing in mind that the order dates back to November 2006, this has left a lot of machines open to tampering. The purpose of the order was to protect the
consumer, and, judging by some cases, tampering has been happening, and machines have not been paying out what they are supposed to. There are sanctions in place if operators do not conform - dating back to 1985 - but without checks, the relatively mild fine of up to 1,000 euros cannot be enforced. But if the ITC can begin checking, it will bring in an income of around 300,000 euros, which would be subsidised by the machine owners. Thus, it will generate employment while safeguarding the interest of the consumer.
Bridget Mendoza, the Canarian Government’s Minister for Health, described the figures as “very positive”. But she was greeted by opposition from certain healthcare professionals. Their concern was that several patients assessed as needing surgery were not been included in, or added to, the lists. Around 30% of the 27,164 people waiting have been doing so for over six months, but this number is down by 1,341 on the end of 2012. Only two hospitals saw a rise in the number of patients awaiting surgery - namely La Gomera General Hospital and Doctor Negrín in Gran Canaria. It is hardly surprising that Tenerife’s two
main hospitals, Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria (HUNSC) and the University Hospital (HUC), accounted for the largest patient lists (11,548 between them), mainly because they are the archipelago’s largest hospitals. Gran Canaria’s three main centres, Doctor Negrín, Mother and Child, and the Insular hospitals, had a total of 10,944 patients on the waiting lists. There was an upward trend in the volume of waiting patients at the beginning of 2013, but it started to slow and the rise was limited to just 181 people in the first quarter. The second half of the year saw the numbers rise again, particularly in the HUC, La Gomera General Hospital and Nuestra Señora de los Reyes, in El Hierro. Public hospitals put new procedures into place at the start of 2013 and made organisational changes. They replaced retired doctors, hired extra
ancillary staff for operating theatres, and nurses for in-patient hospital care, gave priority to urgent surgeries and those patients who had waited the longest. An sceptical Rodrigo Martín, Santa Cruz Medical Association President, said: “We have to accept what the Ministry says, but I would prefer that there were an independent body or organisation to control and audit the figures with total impartiality before publishing.” Intersindical Canaria, the trade union movement, went one step further by calling the figures “fictitious”. Patricia Hernández, spokesperson for the organisation at the HUNC, pointed out a large number of people who were not added to the list, despite requiring surgery. She said they could not be included until their patient files had been created, adding: “The reality is much worse than the numbers say.”

You beauty - Amanda is the new Carnaval Queen AMANDA Perdomo San Juan was a popular choice among a crowd of nearly 5,500 on Wednesday night as she was crowned Santa Cruz Carnaval Queen.
The four-hour, Grand Election Gala extravaganza, was the biggest and most glamorous ever, and the judges had a hard task choosing from the 16 finalists. Amanda’s amazing costume, “Poderosa Amazona” (The Powerful Amazon), was designed by Daniel Pages, who became a first-time winner himself. Amanda, a 21-year-old stunner from La Palma, is no stranger to entering and winning beauty contests. In 2009, as a 17-yearold, she was crowned Miss La Palma and Miss Tenerife, which gave her a ticket into the 2010 Miss Spain pageant. Runner-up Rocío Pérez Benítez was given the First Lady of Honour sash, with Yolanda Mendoza Reyes third, Naomi Almenara fourth and Garra Ramos Gonzalez fifth. The Election of the Carnival Queen signals the beginning of the “main” Carnaval section of festivities. This weekend, there will be street musicians, parades and
that previous Carnaval Queens had been able to travel and represent Carnaval in other countries, or even move into fashion. In her case, she says, it was “just like any ordinary year”. Her final job as Queen will be to pre-
various parties on the streets. Tonight (Friday), sees the start of the nighttime parties and tomorrow heralds the first general musical performances in Santa Cruz. The Coso Apotheosis parade takes place on
Tu e s d a y, followed on Wednesday by the Burial of the Sardine ritual. Meanwhile, the 2013 winner, Soraya Rodríguez Castro, has been speaking about her year as Carnaval Queen, and says she feels rather “disillusioned” by it all. She told newspapers
sent the sceptre to the new Carnaval Queen. When asked what she would say to her successor, she replied: “I hope you have more luck than I did.” There has been a huge investment to increase security measures this
year, particularly because of the fire at last year’s Gala, which caused horrific burns to one candidate, Saida Prieto. Soraya said safety should be a priority, and welcomed the changes. And despite her own disappointment, she still believes it is an “amazing” event, and should remain as unchanged as possible within the new safety framework. So what does advice does she have for Aher successor? “Enjoy every moment, and never forget your experience. Give your all, but relax and be yourself.” To combat nerves, Soraya said she had no special routine, but liked to motivate herself by listening to music. “If you go in scared, you won’t enjoy it as much,” she says. “You must convince yourself that it will be something amazing and give it everything - because it’s gone in a moment!”

Canaries’ visitors up, and so are the prices! THE Canary Islands were top of the list of destinations for foreign visitors to Spain in January, despite an average 2.7% increase in the cost of a holiday there.
The figures were released on Monday by the National Statistics Institute (INE). On a national level, hotels saw 12.7 million overnight visitors in the month, up 7.6% on the same period in 2013. The number of Spanish residents staying abroad overnight rose by 11.8%, also showing a rise in
Planning chief plans cost cuts
JOSÉ María Álvarez Acosta, Adeje’s Urban Planning Councillor, wants to modify the town’s building regulations by introducing a series of energysaving measures.
These should cut domestic bills, and he also wants to regulate of
liquid gas installations. Both proposals will be discussed at the Council meeting today (Friday). “One of the Government’s commitments is to the environment, and we are working on these modifications regarding lighting and ventilation,” said Álvarez Acosta. “These measures should mean a reduction in electricity bills. “The design and con-
struction of buildings have a lot to do with energy consumption, which is why all new buildings have to comply with minimum energy-efficient measures adapted to the local climate conditions.” The councillor revealed that Adeje was one of the first boroughs in the Canary Islands to use piped gas. “We are looking at an investment in the fu-
ture, something of huge interest to the tourist and domestic sectors,” he said. “It’s a form of gas provision which is a ‘bridge’ to the arrival of natural gas, with an expansion plan until 2020. “This form of gas is cheaper, space-saving and has zero visual impact. It also means a reduction in the transport of potentially-dangerous materials on public roads.”
Canaries are just about competing THE Canary Islands rank 199th out of 262 European regions analysed by the private company Institución Futuro.
The company was initially looking only at Navarra, where it is based, but has developed its study to include all of Spain’s Autonomous regions, as well as selected Europe regions. The regions are scored via a number of criteria, including economic sta-
bility, infrastructure, labour-market stability, health, education and technological readiness. The combination of results has given rise to a form or league table, in which the Canary Islands are 11th place as far as Spanish regions are concerned, and 199th in the full list. Just three Spanish regions are in the top half of the table - Madrid, the Basque Country and Navarra. By contrast, 11 regions were in the bottom 35% of the list, including the
Canaries. The low position of the Canaries is mainly because of the instability of the jobs’ market. Regarding individual categories, the Canaries came in at 177th in education, 196th in infrastructure and 198th in technological readiness. But they were ranked far lower in innovation (232nd) and work efficiency (239th). The instability of the jobs’ market also has a knock-on effect in terms of providing large companies to invest in the
islands. Where the Canaries scored highly was in terms of health, which includes data on road deaths, infant mortality rates, suicide rates and life expectancy, among others. The Canaries landed at a surprising 36th place. On a European level, the places (cities or regions) securing the highest rankings were: Utrecht, London, Berkshire, Stockholm, Surrey, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Paris and Copenhagen.
UK stays of just under 1%. Each international visitor stayed on average 3.3 nights, up 1.1% on 2013. Hotel prices on a national level remained pretty stable between December 2012 and December 2013, generating an average revenue per occupied room of 69.40 euros. For domestic travel, the top destinations were Andalucia, Valencia, Catalonia and Madrid, up by as much as 7.9%. The top destination for international travellers was the Canary Islands, which accounted for a massive 60.7% of all overnight stays recorded. This equates to a year-onyear rise of 14%.
Islands’ pensions lag behind the mainland THE average monthly pension in the Canary Islands was just 808.97 euros in February, after hitting a mid-month high of 993.36 euros. It represents a 2.2% rise from February
2013, but sits below the national average, which, accounting for all types of pension payouts (retirement, disability, widowhood and family), was 866.57 euros - up 1.8% from last year.
Energy bills down
ENERGY and industrial costs for the whole of Spain went down by 1.3% in January from the previous month.
The annual decrease in the Canaries was 3.6%, attributed to lower energy production costs, along with reduced costs in transport and distribution, and the lower cost of oil refining. The price of consumer goods also fell, with an inter-annual drop of 0.7%, making it the lowest since February 2010.
This was mainly through the lower prices associated with the manufacturing of vegetable oils and animal fats, which are now at their lowest price since July 2009. On a national level, almost every Autonomous Community enjoyed a fall in production costs, with the Balearic and Canary Islands seeing the biggest drops. The three exceptions were Cantabria, Madrid and La Rioja. The new figures were released this week by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Cough, cough… splutter, mutter OF course, nobody likes being ill. But let me tell you, I’m AWFUL when I get the lurgy. Even Florence Nightingale would have enough of me after an hour or two.
This thing was a real gripper. The sort of bug you think is nothing but a tickle in the chest when, in reality, it’s a kick in the plums. It has all the favourite symptoms: the sweats, the chills, the phlegm, the running nose, the cough where you think a spleen is coming up and, of course, the regular trips to pottyland. Lovely! Thankfully, I’m not alone. Most people on the Island have had this strain of whateveritscalled. Except they haven’t. Because when it affects a woman, it’s the latest 21st Century Super Virus, which is on the front page of the Daily Express. But when a bloke
gets it... well, it’s just Man Flu! I hate that phrase. Why is it that whenever I’m feeling under the weather, or I have half of Boots’ research centre coming out of my lungs, it’s just a bloke being soft? And then there are the ‘remedies’ and ‘soothing words’: “Try some soup, it will make you feel better.” No, what will make me feel better is a pint of cider or the ability to sleep for 20 minutes. “Get some rest.” What do you think I’m trying to do, but this bug will not let me. “Oh, you’ve been working too hard.” I know this, so how does that make me better? “Have you tried drinking Ron Miel?” Standard ‘entertainer’ response: who drinks that rubbish? “Go and see a Doctor.” Well, D’uh! In the end, all it took was a couple of good old-fashioned antibiotics, a few of litres of water and a spicy chilli. But doesn’t every man know that?

But the Council there has only just got round to it, and, today (Friday), the new uniforms will be unveiled in the capital city. José Alberto Díaz Estébanez, Councillor for Citizens’ Security and Mobility, presented the new outfits at Parque García Sanabria on Tuesday. The emphasis has been placed on comfort and climate. with shirts being replaced with shortsleeved polo shirts. The changes will also bring the force’s uniforms into line with other areas in the Canaries, who have already changed theirs following
the 2003 unification regulations. Police Commissioner Carmen Delia González, who was at Tuesday’s ceremony, drew attention to the uniform’s high-visibility elements. As well as UV protec-
tion built into the fabric, and the regulatory “Canary Local Police” logo on the back, trousers have also been changed to a less-formal design, with multiple pockets. And there’s a treat for
police drivers because a new fleet of Toyota hybrid cars will also be rolling today. They cars are fully equipped and will reduce emissions because of their petrol/electric engines.
Las Palmas demands 6.5m over ‘fraud’ by Santa Cruz LAS PALMAS councillors have voted unanimously to demand 6.5m euros from the Canary Islands Government. It is, they say, compensation for the alleged “fraud” committed by Santa Cruz Council, which, they say, submitted incorrect population figures to the
Government’s Municipal Register to secure higher municipal funding from the budget. An accusation of a breach of “institutional loyalty” has also been levied. Gran Canaria’s capital city has already allotted the compensation to social services and job creation, should it win the case. It has expressed its “confusion” across parties as to how Santa
Cruz could provide an “unrealistic standard” for as many as 16 years, effectively taking funds from other municipalities. The statement urged the need for future “corrective measures” to ensure equality and transparency, and for
ongoing compensation for the damage caused. It also added that the refusal of Santa Cruz to break the silence over the allegations should not be used as a wall to hide behind, stressing: “It should be condemned in the strongest possible way.”
End of the line for fish market
PLAYA San Juan’s fish market has been shut down after failing to meet the required health standards. The Health Ministry, despite pleas from local fishermen, ordered the closure following checks by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. It means there are
now only two areas in South Tenerife where fish can be sold directly from the sea: Tajao (Arico) and Los Abrigos (Granadilla). The latter has been open for just a few months, and Playa San Juan fishermen are nw expected to sell their catches there.

Canaries’ huge funding from EU is not enough! THE Canary Islands will receive European funding of nearly 2,400 million euros over the next seven years.
It represents an increase of 900 million euros over last year’s funding. But the Islands are still not getting their fair share, according to statistics. Some 40% is expected to be channelled through regional government, with the remaining 60% being administered through the State. It sounds like good news, but the Canaries’ assistance has risen to 92% of the European per-capita investment, up from last year’s 83%, which means the Islands are still not receiving funding equivalent to some other EU countries. The Canarian Government is said to be making plans for the invest-
ment, and assessing the eligibility of projects for funding. Areas expected to benefit will be innovation and development, quality education and training, and reducing emissions with regard to climate change. Based on initial discussions, a partnership agreement will be presented to Brussels in May. And, if all goes according to plan, the scheme will be finalised by July, in readiness for grantapplication procedures to begin early next year. Key aspects where funding will be made available - depending upon the projects submitted - should include the development of sustainable transport, competitiveness of small and medium businesses (pymes), energy efficiency, education, social inclusion and overcoming poverty, as well as improving the efficiency of public administration.

Adeje Market gets a sparkling facelift COSTA Adeje Market, opposite the El Duque Commercial Centre, has had a facelift for the benefit of traders and the public alike.
Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga recently called into the market to see the changes, accompanied by the borough’s Tourism Councillor, Rafael Dolado García. The improvements have already been welcomed and praised by the commercial traders, according to Álvaro Luis Rodríguez and Jimmy Gómez, partners in the markets, who met the Adeje representatives during their visit. The Mayor said: “We are visiting a market that is very modern, which has adapted to the needs and demands of today. “The company respon-
sible for the market has recognised that in the overall move to renovate the tourist destination, every business in the sector has to be involved in the change. “Congratulations are in order for the work carried out which, without doubt, will also bring positive results for the traders.”
The company behind the market, Mercadillo del Atlántico SL, invested over half-a-million euros in the project. Alterations included brand-new tarmac for the area and 200 new 2sqm marquees, ordered especially for the market from Germany and of the highest quality.
The perimeter of the market was also regulated to increase security and improve the area’s management. It is open on Thursdays and Saturdays, from 9am to 2pm. As many as 4,000 people visit the market each day and it is enjoyed by tourists and residents alike.

Classic Bistro – Delicious Menu BISTRO 108, nestled in the back streets of Los Cristianos, has certainly made its mark since opening just over two months ago. The restaurant, owned by James Daly, has international cuisine as its inspiration, with seasonal menus from head chef Gabor Almasi. His dishes are a good mix of classic and contemporary styles, with a wealth of well-sourced ingredients. They have a strong influence from France, with nods to Britain, Spain and Italy. The freshest seasonal ingredients are also a huge priority for the kitchen, and the menus are evolving constantly as Gabor responds to customer feedback. James and Gabor were in harness together in Alicante, before the latter moved to Ireland and worked at Marco Pierre White’s acclaimed restaurant Dawson’s - Steakhouse & Grill. He was there for two years before moving on to Dylan McGrath’s Rustic Stone. But with a love for outdoor sports and sunshine, Gabor decided to leave the cold and wet of Dublin behind to team up with James again in Tenerife. The menu is small but adequate, with enough choice for everyone. To start, we sampled grilled seta mushroom with blue cheese, pinenuts and wholegrain mustard dressing; chicken and chorizo skewers with grilled star fruit, served on corn tortilla drizzled with basil oil, smoked salmon with creamy horseradish, advocado and served with crispbreads. There was plenty of choice, including King Prawn Cocktail, Fig and Goat’s Cheese sprill roll, infused with red wine figs and pinenuts, and a Tris de Bruschetta. The presentation of all the dishes was excellent and plentiful, with superb flavours. For the main course we had a varied range of tempting dishes to choose from, such as Mushroom Risotto, Prawn Linguini, Crispy Sea Trout and Marinated Chicken. We opted for Prime Fillet Steak, served with a choice of pepper coat and served with a range of sauces, Duck Leg Confit with coriander honey and orange potatoes, slow-cooked Lamb Shank with creamy mash potatoes and rich red wine, and Pork Fillet Medallions with gratin potato and chorizo cream sauce. The food was presented beautifully and the flavours exquisite. The portions were excellent and we all agreed that another visit to Bistro 108 is a must to sample some of the other choices from the plentiful menu. After a little wait to find out if any of us actually had any room for desserts, we perused the menu and simply had no choice but to find room for two, to be shared between the four of us. The desserts are simple yet delicious, and the perfect way to finish a meal. Eton Mess, Banoffee Pie, warm chocolate fudge cake and the wonderful Mojito Sorbet. Booking in advance at Bistro 108 is advisable, and you can contact the restaurant on 922 751 626 (mobile 606 032 381), or email contact@bistro108.es. Bistro 108 also has a website at www.bistro108.es which has full details of all their menus and other information.

Carnaval’s volunteers standing by
WITH the Santa Cruz Carnaval moving up a notch and the party taking to the streets of the capital, the authorities are taking care of everyone.
Santa Cruz Mayor, Jose Manuel Bermudez, along Public Safety and Mobility Councillor Jose Alberto Diaz Estbanez and Carnaval chief Fernando Ballesteros, discussed health and safety measures with Red Cross President Carlos Piñero. There is a “Carnaval Hospital” in place again to act as a co-ordination point for security and emergency services, as well as helping with medical and health problems. Bermudez said “An alloperational Carnaval
Hospital is very important with the sole purpose of protecting and caring for those who come to the Carnival. “Hundreds of thousands of people who come to Santa Cruz to party can make use of this facility.” The Mayor highlighted the work and effort performed each year, saying: “The professionals and volunteers, who do the safety and emergency work to ensure assistance to anyone who has some sort of problem during the Carnival, deserve our thanks and respect.” More than 150 people are working within this facility every day during the carnaval’s party season. Many will start work at 8pm and go through until 10am. The Hospital can be found in the Plaza General Gutiérrez Mellado, next to the Cabildo building.
It is open from today (Friday), until the evening of 9th March. Booths and tents are also being set up to help people who may suffer any problems, at a cost to the Carnaval organisation fund of around 163,000 euros. Spanish Red Cross will, for the fifth consecutive year, be responsible for providing and co-ordinating all health care during the rides, arena shows and other street performances. Last year, Red Cross members provided 685 people with medical care. Meanwhile, Santa Cruz Local Police will also have a special area to assist people both in the vicinity of the Hospital and surrounding areas. There will be 16 dedicated officers, working at this mini-office, to handle complaints and smaller situations.

FRANCESCO Schettino, Italian captain of the tragic Costa Concordia ship, has returned to the wreck for the first time as part of his manslaughter trial.
The ship hit a reef near the island of Giglio in January 2012 and capsized, killing 32 people who were on board. Mr Schettino was taken to the wreck in a small boat, two days after travelling back to Giglio. He denies the charges of manslaughter and abandoning ship, which could put him behind bars for 20 years. The Italian arrived on the island off the Tuscan coast on Tuesday and is said to have wept when, from a ferry taking him to Giglio, he saw the wreck He attended a healthand-safety briefing at a hotel yesterday morning (Thursday) to prepare him for the short boat trip out to the wreck, on which he was accompanied by a group of courtappointed experts. responsibility, asking for forgiveness in a television interview last year as he talked of those who died. But he is adamant that he managed to steer the stricken vessel closer to shore to prevent it from sinking in deep water, where hundreds might have drowned. In July last year, an Italian court convicted five others of manslaughter. They had all entered successful plea bargains, but Mr Schettino’s request for one was denied by the
on the ship itself. The skipper was allowed on to the ship “as a defendant, not a consultant”, said Judge Giovanni Puliatti. The 290m-long vessel was righted in September 2013 in one of the
largest, most complex salvage operations ever. But it remains stranded. The captain is accused of leaving the luxury liner before the 4,229 people on board were taken off the ship. “They want to show
that I am weak, just like two years ago.” he was quoted as saying in the Italian media. “It’s not true. I want to show that I’m a gentleman and not a coward.” He has already accepted some degree of

prosecution. His return to the island has stirred cruel memories among some locals. “Schettino’s here, he cried, so what?” one woman told the AFP news agency. “We’re tired of this story! We want him and the boat gone.” But 67-year-old Giuseppe Modesti told the same agency: “There’s no real anger here any more. Two years have passed and it’s time to make peace with what happened.” The complex operation to salvage the Costa Concordia took 18 hours, and it followed months of stabilisation and preparation work by a 500-strong team of engineers and divers. Ports in Italy, Britain, France, Turkey and China are now bidding for the lucrative contract to dismantle it.

Picture these scenes from 22,000 years ago FIVE pensioners, chosen in a draw, yesterday (Thursday) marvelled at the ice-age paintings of bison, bulls and other animals in the famous Altamira Caves, in Northern Spain.
They are being opened to the public, briefly, for the first time in a dozen years, and that’s exactly what the winning group experienced - a brief look! Their visit, including the time taken to get into the caves, lasted about half-an-hour, giving them just eight minutes to admire the incredible paintings in the 17-cave complex, which include the Paleolithic Cave. The five visitors were chosen from a list of people who had visited the replica cave in the Museo de Altami-
ra. They were invited, at random, to enter a draw to visit the original caves. During their trip, dozens of sensors monitored changes in the caves’ temperature and humidity, to see if more
visitors can be allowed in at a later date. The caves, closed in 2002 to protect the paintings from microbiological damage, have been dubbed the “Sistine Chapel Ceiling of Cave Art”.
The paintings, which date back 22,000 years, were discovered in 1876 by a local archaeologist and his daughter. But for more than two decades, the images were dismissed as fakes. In the years that fol-
lowed, they were damaged by the breath of human visitors and the caves were eventually closed to the public. So, for the past 12 years, visitors have been able to see replica images only in a nearby museum. As part of the experiment, a total of 192 people will be allowed to see the paintings in weekly visits until August. But despite the historic
nature of the viewing, cameras will not be allowed: nor will visitors be allowed to touch the rock. They will be also dressed in protective clothing, to help prevent contamination of the site. The images have survived so long because the soluble pigment used to paint them became fixed to their limestone rock canvas.

DNA spots deadly prostate sufferers
DJ Travis now faces new trial DAVE Lee Travis, the former Radio 1 DJ cleared of 12 counts of indecent assault earlier this month, is facing a retrial. The Crown Prosecution Service said that the 68-year-old, from Mentmore, Buckinghamshire, would go on trial over two outstanding charges of indecent and sexual assault. Mr Travis, who was bailed and must report to Southwark Crown Court on 28th March to learn when his new trial starts, said: “The nightmare is now going to go on.” Prosecutor Miranda Moore QC, appearing before Judge Anthony Leonard said: “The

prosecution is seeking a retrial for two outstanding counts.” Reading a short statement outside court, Mr Travis said: “All I can say is that this whole thing started when I was 67 - and I just hope it’s going to end by the time I am 80.” He had initially been accused of indecently assaulting 10 women and sexually assaulting another in alleged incidents dating back to 1976, at the height of his fame. The outstanding charges relate to an allegation of indecent assault against a woman in the early Nineties, along with an alleged sexual assault in 2008 on a journalist.
MEN with prostate cancer could soon be offered similar genetic screening to that applicable to female breast-cancer sufferers.
A scientific team of researchers at London’s Institute of Cancer Research, say DNA testing can predict which men face the highest risk of the deadly but curable cancer. They have shown that 14 separate mutations can greatly increase the odds of aggressive prostate cancers, which could form the basis of a test. And Prostate Cancer UK said such testing could “revolutionise” care for men. Prostate cancer is the commonest cancer in men in many countries, including the UK, where more than 40,000 people are diagnosed annually.
But not every patient has, or needs, invasive therapy which brings on severe side-effects. Identifying exactly who will need treatment - those who are likely to develop the most aggressive and deadly form of the cancer - is a huge challenge. The researchers took blood samples from 191 men with prostate cancer, and at least three close family members with the same condition. Each was tested for risky mutations - including the BRCA genes involved in repairing DNA and already linked to breast and ovarian cancers. The results, published in the British Journal of Cancer, showed that 7% of the men had one of 14 high-risk mutations. The team said that these same people also had the aggressive prostate cancer, which had started to spread around the body.
Researcher Dr Zsofia Kote-Jarai told the BBC: “I can see, in two to three years, offering screening to men with prostate cancer, and to men worried about their family history.” But she stressed that it was unlikely they would opt to have their prostate removed immediately. Many women with a high risk of breast cancer, for example Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie, opt to have their breast tissue removed. Dr Kote-Jarai added: “A mastectomy is removing an organ we don’t really need, and there is excellent plastic surgery afterwards. “But radical prostatectomy has really big side-effects, and it is more likely that men will be monitored more closely.” The side-effects include infertility, difficulty maintaining and keeping an erection, and
uncontrolled urination. For all the excitement, though, the screening is not ready yet and the researchers are already engaged in carrying out a larger trial involving 2,000 men, and testing 192 genes. Dr Iain Frame, Prostate Cancer UK Director of Research, said: “We urgently need to understand more about which men are at risk of developing prostate cancer and, in particular, aggressive forms of the disease. “Genetic testing to predict risk could revolutionise how we treat the 40,000 men diagnosed with the disease every year in the UK. “These results are exciting as they add to the growing weight of evidence that men with a family history of prostate cancer, who possess certain genes, may be at higher risk, providing us with another crucial piece of the jigsaw.”

TLK is BACK! For many people, the start of Tenerife Loves Karaoke signals the end of the winter months. And it’s hard to believe that the popular competition is now in its fourth year!
Harveys Bar in Los Cristianos hosts the first heat tonight, (Friday), and there will be at least 12 other TLK heats in 2014. This year the event moves to a regular Friday spot. Each year, this competition has produced some fabulous singers, and most of the contestants are looking for a way into showbiz. The organisers are aware of this, and they understand that they may need a little more support than somebody who is already working in the industry. It can be really daunting while waiting to be judged, especially when you are putting your ability and talent on the line for others to review. This is also a showcase for the extremelytalented workforce we have in Tenerife’s Karaoke and Show bars. Over the years, there has been a variety of entrants competing in Tenerife Love’s Karaoke, and the comedic entries have actually managed to get a placing at heat level. In the first year, there was a young man called Jamie at the Harbour Club in Puerto Colon. He tore the place up completely with his version of Star Trekkin’ by The Farm. Under the scoring system, vocal ability accounted for 30 of the 50 points available. And though this song really doesn’t have a melody, it does take a great deal of ability to produce every vocal character in the song. Therefore, he scored high and sailed through to the sing-off at the heat’s final stage. Unfortunately, his second choice of song didn’t have the same impact on the judges, and
that’s as far as he went in the competition. However, the entertainment value produced on the stage during that heat was unsurpassed throughout the rest of the competition. The first-ever TLK winner was Paula Leeming, who has gone on to work within many areas of entertainment. She has performed in various duos, is also a compere and works for Playaway, the company which helps youngsters wishing to work abroad achieve their ambition. 2012 saw Yasmin Khan, victorious. She had dreamed for a long time of being a singer but had no idea how to begin. Her opportunity came through TLK - and after getting to the final in the first year and entering again the next year and
winning the competition outright, she immediately gained recognition. Here we are two years down the line and she is now a full-time singer in hotels and restaurants around the Island. Last year’s grand final saw another packed house at Showtime, Las Americas, and another worthy winner in Kristen. So who will win this year? Will it be you? Will we finally get a male winner or will the ladies shine again? We will find out over the next few months. Don’t forget, this year’s Grand winner will walk away with 1,000 euros! To enter call 902 232 102, you can enter at the venue, Tenerife Loves Karaoke can be found on Facebook, and further details can be obtained via email to info@oasisfm.com

Holocaust Alice dies at 110 ALICE HerzSommer, the oldest person to survive the Holocaust, has died at the astonishing age of 110.
Ms Herz-Sommer, whose life features in the current Oscar-nominated documentary The Lady in Number 6, passed away on Sunday after being admitted to a London hospital two days earlier.
Al-
ice was born in Prague in 1903 and. 40 years later, the Nazis sent her and her son, Stephan, to a concentration camp in the Czech city of Terezin. They were both freed in 1945 when the Soviet Red Army liberated the camp, and Alice emigrated to Israel, before settling in Britain eventually. Tragically, during
World War II, her husband died of typhus at Germany’s Dachau concentration camp, and her mother was killed at Treblinka death camp in occupied Poland. Alice’s proud grandson, Ariel Sommer, said: “Alice Sommer passed away peacefully this morning (Sunday) with her family by her bedside. “Much has been writ-
ten about her, but to those of us who knew her best, she was our dear ‘Gigi’. He added: “She loved us, laughed with us, and cherished music with us. She was an inspiration, and our world will be significantly poorer without her by our side.” Alice was an accomplished pianist and, along other musicians, gave performances in
the concentration camp to try to raise the inmates’ spirits. Beethoven, she once said, was her religion, and she also said that music had saved her life. By her own admission, she bore no grudges, and saw her life as a wonderful gift. The film on her life story has been Oscar-nominated for best short documentary at Sunday’s Academy Awards. The film’s director, Malcolm Clark, and producer Nick Reed said in a statement that telling Ms Herz-Sommer’s story had been a lifechanging experience. “Even as her energy slowly diminished, her bright spirit never failed,” they wrote. “Her life force was so strong that we could never imagine her not being around. We can all learn so much from this most amazing woman.” An estimated 140,000 Jews were sent to Terezin, where 33,430 perished. About 88,000 were moved to Auschwitz and other death camps, where most of them were killed.
X-Factor Ruth’s Eurovision reward SPAIN’S 2014 Eurovision entry will be performed by Ruth Lorenzo, from Murcia.
The final takes place in Copenhagen on 9th May, and Ruth will be performing the song Dancing in the Rain, which is a piano-based ballad sung Spanish and English. If the name sounds familiar, you may recall that 31-year-old Ruth performed on the X fac-
tor UK series in 2008, when she finished fifth. She was raised in the US from the age 12, and returned to Spain at 16. She entered the Spanish talent show Operación Triunfo in 2002, but did not get past the first round of auditions. Her determination has definitely paid off, though, as she will now represent her birth country in the biggest international song competition of all. In the final stages of
Look Who’s Going to Eurovision (Spain’s selection event), Ruth actually tied with South Africa-born Brequette, who is a Gran Canaria resident. The competition rules then decreed that the deciding vote went to the public, and Ruth emerged triumphant. And this week, she will be in Santa Cruz as part of the Carnaval celebrations. and she is expected to sing her Euro song!

Bargains galore as crowds salute Primark’s opening B A R G A I N HUNTING ladies of Tenerife were rejoicing yesterday (Thursday) as Primark finally opened in Santa Cruz.
Some people queued through the night for the privilege of being the first into the new superstore, based in the Centro Comercial Meridiano. But Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Bermudez beat them all to it because he was already installed behind the scenes, along with other dignitaries, waiting to perform the official opening ceremony by cutting the ribbon, Thousands of eager shoppers formed a notso-orderly queue as they tried to grab a bargain or two. Canarian Weekly fashion correspondent Ruth Benson, one of the first through the door, offered this instant reaction: “My first impressions are summed up in one word - wow! “The crowds were out in costume and in a carnaval-type mood, the sun was shining down on the store and, I have to admit, I cannot get over how well-executed the whole store opening was. Once the doors opened at 11am, the store kept a tight rein on proceedings. “Security staff had strict control over the number of customers in the shop at any given time, which prevented the usual mass hysteria witnessed at these types of events, with shoppers fighting to get to the bargains. “Once inside, the design and layout captures your eye, with the spring collection on
is the children’s department. “The whole feel of the shop and opening was best summed-up by Breege O’Donoghue, the group’s Executive Director, who wants working for the company and shopping in the stores to be like Tenerife’s famous carnaval. “The party atmosphere is something of which the group is so proud, both at previous shop openings and throughout the way the store is run. “You couldn’t help but feel good once insie the store, and its view, as well as those allimportant low prices. “The store is spread over two floors, with a reasonable-sized departments for men’s and women’s clothing, and one for accessories. And there’s also a small home selection. “But for me, the key area in which the shop will be most successful
opening has created a major buzz on the Island. “During the opening speech, the group’s CEO, Paul Marchant, said the main reasons for Primark being so popular and why business was booming was down to the company providing fashion at good prices and the way they can turn round styles in a short time. “From my experience up there today, Primark will succeed in the North - and I’m sure it won’t be that long before we see another store, down here in the South. Watch this space!”

Track Cycling World Championships BBC1, 13.15
Jonathan Edwards presents highlights from the Track Cycling World Championships in Colombia. Great Britain have established themselves as the dominant force in track cycling in recent years, and will have high hopes of returning from Cali with another impressive medal haul. The British women’s team pursuit squad will certainly begin as red-hot favourites – only three months ago they broke their own world record, shaving three seconds off their previous best. Three-time Olympic gold medallist Jason Kenny will also be in action, and will hope to successfully defend the keirin world title he won in Minsk last year. Commentary is from Simon Brotherton and Chris Boardman.

Fish Fight: Hugh’s Last Stand Channel 4, 19:00
Three years ago, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingtall launched the Fish Fight campaign to highlight the problems facing our global fishing industry. In Fish Fight: Hugh’s Last Stand, Hugh tells the story of how hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world came together, and forced the politicians in Brussels to radically reform fishing policies. Now Hugh goes back to the North Sea to find out how a more sustainable future for fish and for fishermen might work. Hugh is also back on the case of politicians, supermarkets and big businesses to make sure they keep their promises. One of the biggest fishing companies in the world and the Thai Government have announced they are taking steps to improve the sustainability of the prawns they sell to British supermarkets.

Henri Matisse - A Cut Above the Rest. Matisse was one of the most celebrated painters of the 20th century who, even in his own lifetime, enjoyed a level of popularity envied by other artists. But in 1941, after a near-fatal operation for cancer, he decided to give up painting and sought a new way of drawing in colour. Scissors replaced a paintbrush and with the unique skill of a tailor he set about creating his now famous cut-outs, which have yet to be rivalled for their originality and daring.

Undercover: Hate on the Terraces. Dispatches goes undercover to reveal the extent of racism and homophobia in top flight English football. Last year the police and the Crown Prosecution Service, backed by the Football Association, promised to tackle ‘all forms of abuse in football, be it in the stands, or on our computer screens’. In the days and months after this statement Dispatches filmed undercover in the grounds of some of the biggest clubs across the country. Reporter Morland Sanders’ investigation exposes how some supporters take part in systematic and flagrant homophobic chanting. It also raises serious concerns about the police’s response to racism and homophobia.

Barney reveals he hasn’t been entirely honest with Quinn about his romantic history with Robin.
Searching for a new home often means making a choice between town and country. Over 80% of Brits want the peace and quiet of a rural idyll but need to keep near to the city for work and play. Property expert Kirstie Allsopp sets out to prove that there is a middle ground and that you can most definitely have both. In this second episode, Kirstie heads to Gloucester to meet Kate, husband Chris, and their family - three kids, three dogs and Granny Joan. They want to find a character-filled forever home with bags of space, including an annexe, between the city of Gloucester and the surrounding Cotswolds countryside. But can Kirstie help them find the perfect middle ground without straying from their budget?

Adrian Chiles introduces live coverage from Wembley of England’s penultimate home friendly before the World Cup. This is England’s first game since losing 1-0 to Germany at Wembley in November and Roy Hodgson has his final opportunity to look at new faces before announcing his provisional squad for Brazil. It takes place three months before England’s World Cup campaign begins against Italy in Manaus on June 14. Joining Adrian in the studio at Wembley is former England player and manager Glenn Hoddle, appearing in his new role as a pundit for ITV’s exclusive live coverage of England qualifying and friendly internationals. Alongside them will be regular pundit Lee Dixon, while commentary comes from Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend with Gabriel Clarke reporting from pitchside. Denmark’s squad may include players well-known to English fans such as Liverpool defender Daniel Agger, Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen, and Arsenal’s Nicklas Bendtner. The last time the two teams played, the Three Lions travelled to Copenhagen in February 2011, when goals from Ashley Young and Darren Bent secured a 2-1 victory in the Parken Stadium. The Danes’ last visit to Wembley was for a friendly in 1994 which marked Terry Venables’ first match in charge. David Platt swept a left-foot strike past goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel on 17 minutes for the only goal of a contest watched by nearly 72,000 in the old stadium.

By Jamie Drew TENERIFE has never been known as a seasonal island, like the Balearic Islands or Majorca.
But there seems to be a definite shift towards a quieter time of year on our beloved place. However, this is not affecting all areas of Tenerife. Los Gigantes is very popular at this time of the year, yet it is more vibrant in the daytime and early evening than into the small hours. Parque de la Paz always seems to thrive, no matter what time of year it is, yet some areas are like a ghost town at night. All that’s missing is the proverbial tumbleweed, rolling along the promenades. From an entertainment perspective, this isn’t good for evening trade. An entertainer is the highest nightly overhead for a bar owner, so it’s hardly surprising that cabaret shows and even comperes are being cancelled when the
Recently, I managed to catch half a set from a singer I have wanted to watch for some time.

Afternoons & coffee spoons streets are empty. Bar owners know now that things are not going to get back to how they used to be, which is why many are evolving and adapting their programme to target the audience. Some are even employing their entertainers to perform in the afternoon. Obviously, the style is completely different from an evening programme, and bars are leaning towards acoustic sets from musicians and singers, who collaborate and
form duos and trios. Let’s face it, if you were walking along a promenade, looking for a nice bar to sit in and watch the afternoon go by, where would you rather be? In a bar where there is only a TV blurting out the same TV shows you would watch at home? Or in a bar watching some quality “live” music. The Kandi Lounge, in Puerto Colon, has been putting afternoon shows on for two years, and this format has
Bleu Travelle
for names to become well-known, especially when they are backed up with talent. Bleu Travelle is a vibrant, twentysomething singer, who was performing the early set at The Soul Suite on Parque de la Paz. I had never heard her sing before, but I’d heard lots about her. And everything I’d been told about this girl rang true straight away. She has a showbiz tone in her voice and a big vocal range. With her own style, she puts her own signature on songs and at this particular gig, because of the venue, the genre fell under the musical umbrella of Soul and Motown. However, it was apparent that this young lady can sing a variation of musical genres, including a show dedicated to “Divas”. A smile is so important
for singers to display, and Bleu is a natural at engaging the audience, always showing the most beautiful smile. She has a charisma that cannot be taught or developed; you’re just born with it, and Bleu Travelle has it in abundance. Even though I caught the latter part of her set only, it was enough for me to know that I would recommend this artiste for any venue. Her bubbly personality and natural ability to keep the audience attentive, and, of course, that amazing voice, are the dynamics that stand her apart. Whether it be a late dance set or an early evening performance with chill-out songs, this artiste will produce the goods every time. I am looking forward to seeing her again in the near future.
proved an enormous success for Andy and Wendy, their daughter Kirsty and her partner Craig. Earlier this week I caught up with Shane, whose award-winning show, Mister Sister, was one of the first to start the afternoon gigs off in The Kandi Lounge. Now, two years on, Shane tells me that his Thursday afternoon show is the busiest of the week, and crowds are packing the terrace to catch this brilliant show, featuring some Fabio-lous cosDOMINIC JAMES has been performing for most of his life. And his work history before he came to Tenerife tells a story of which any entertainer would be proud. When I first arrived here 14 years ago, Dominic was working as a solo artiste, paying tribute to the songs of Ricky Martin at gigs stretching from Costa del Silencio to Los Gigantes and everywhere in between. At the same time, he was working in one of the Island’s only touring comedy duos at the time, Dom & Dumber. This duo were very successful and, alongside his partner-in-crime, American comedian George Peña, they produced big belly laughter wherever they performed. Around 2006, Dominic took up residency as The Pearla Gris compere in Callao Salvaje. And there, in 2007, he was awarded the accolade of Best Compere at the TEAs.
tumes. He also adds that it’s not just his show that pulls in the afternoon audiences. Every afternoon is the same, and you can see some of the Island’s performing artistes from 4pm daily. Mind you, it’s not a “given” that this format will work in any bar, because there needs to be passing trade and, ideally, a beach-front close by. Most people flock to the beach in the daytime and, by 4pm, the guys have had enough of handbag-shopping with the wife and head to a bar for a couple of pints. People attract more people, so again I ask the question: where would you rather be? In a bar rammed with folk and one of the Island’s top entertainers? Or, on your own watching Countdown in an almost-empty bar, listening to your wife telling you how she loves her
new bag and now needs new shoes to go with it? Yes, it’s a no-brainer. I remember, a couple of years ago, reading a status update on Facebook from Aaron Cormack, promoting his availability for afternoon and early-evening shows during the summer months. Aaron has a wealth of experience in entertainment circles throughout the world, as well as here in Tenerife. Having run a cabaret bar, performed in duos, played as a solo vocal/instrumentalist and also, on occasion, donned a suit to perform the songs of Michael Buble, he recognised a gap in the market early and was sure this format would work in the afternoon. Both he and Shane agree that if you have location, passing trade and a talented entertainer to perform, you have the three ingredients for a successful afternoon entertainment programme.
FROM POP TO OPERA
More recently Dominic has established himself fully as the lead male in The Sound of Musicals at Showtime. Dom is a classicallytrained singer and assists other singers regularly with vocal coaching. He also helps to develop the skills of young, upand-coming singers who want to break into the business. On Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, you will find him at Showtime. However, if you enjoy a flawless male voice, then you should
catch one of Dominic’s solo shows. His vocal range can cover anything, but his passion will always remain with musical theatre and his Pop to Opera show is something else. Mixing these two genres was a risk for him, but it has paid off. His delivery is second to none, and has a way with the audience that totally puts them at ease. Someone who is a relative stranger at the beginning of the show will almost seem like a close friend by the end. Entertainment is what courses through this man’s veins. Dominic James, a true pro, a topdrawer artiste and a complete master of his craft, is a must for your billboard if you want to boast of having the Island’s best.

Will Oscars go for a Hustle? THIS Sunday sees the awards season finale as the 86th Academy Awards take place in Los Angeles.
American Hustle and Gravity are tied for the most nominations with 10 apiece, but it seems to be quite an open year. The Best Picture lineup includes 12 Years a Slave, Martin Scorsese’s debauchery-fuelled Wolf of Wall Street, and even the small films such as Nebraska and Philomena have fine chances of success. Traditionally, the Best Director gong goes to the winner of the Best Picture, but there is a strong case for that not happening on Sunday. Steve McQueen has been taking the likes of the BAFTA for his direction, and it’s easy to see why. But Gravity is a unique film, which stretches every sinew out of the direction. Alfonso Cuaron drives Gravity from start to finish, and the complexity of the story should see him home.
That said, 12 Years A Slave is a superior film. There is no reason why the Academy will disagree with their fellow critics. But sometimes, when there are two strong films, the vote is split. This could easily play into the hands of
American Hustle, which has attracted a lot of buzz this week. There are worse 16-1 shots in the world. In fact, American Hustle could be in for a frustrating night. Christian Bale is excellent and, in a normal year, would be
a strong shout for Best Actor. Ditto Chiwetel Ejiofor. However, there is little wrong with Matthew McConaughey’s starring role in The Dallas Buyers Club. It’s as much his personal sacrifice which makes him such a strong favourite.
The biggest certainty of the night is Cate Blanchette winning another Best Actress Oscar. She will cement her title as best actress of her generation with victory for Blue Jasmine. It’s tough on the everexcellent Amy Adams
(Hustle) and Sandra Bullock, who may feel her time will now pass. American Hustle should go home with Best Supporting Actress. Jennifer Lawrence looks set for her second Oscar in three years and is preferred to bookies’ favourite Lupita Nyongo (12 Years). Best Supporting Actor will surely go to Jared Leto for The Dallas Buyers Club, ahead of the luckless Michael Fassbender (12 Years). American Hustle’s Eric Warren Singer and David O. Russell should scoop Best Original Screenplay, and 12 Years A Slave will win Best Adapted Screenplay.
Heart attacks kills a Flamenco legend SPAIN’S worldrenowned guitarist Paco de Lucía, who brought Flamenco music to the masses, died on Wednesday in Mexico.
He was born Francisco Sánchez Gómez in Algeciras (Cádiz) in 1947, and initial reports suggest he was with his son at Cancun beach, on the east coast, when he began to feel unwell. The 66-year-old, who is believed to have suffered a heart attack, was taken to hospital. But medical teams were unable to save him. Paco received a number of accolades during his glittering career, including the National Flamenco Guitar award, the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts (1992), an Honorary Distinction in the 2002 Music Awards, and the Prince of Asturias Arts Prize two years later. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate
from the University of Cádiz. Tributes from his
birthplace, Algeciras, were led by the Mayor, José Ignacio Landaluce,
who expressed his “deep regret” at the death of the guitarist, whom he
called “the city’s favourite son”. In a statement, he asked for a “show of support from a city that mourns the most international of its children, and the greatest figure in the guitar world”. Paco de Lucía, from a musical family, released his first album in 1967, taking the Flamenco style outside of its usual boundaries. He was taught to play by his father, Antonio Sánchez. His brother, Pepe, is a professional singer, and his other brother, Ramón de Algeciras, was a professional guitarist.
Paco formed a sextet in 1981 which included both his brothers, along with Jorge Pardo (saxophone and flute), Rubén Dantas (percussion) and Carles Benavent (bass), thus creating the now popular concept of a Flamenco group. He collaborated with a number of famous artists from all musical genres, including Bryan Adams, John McLaughlin and Al Di Meola. Paco also won a Latin Grammy Award for best Flamenco album, Cositas Buenas being released after his five-year gap from recording.

This wise old Sage By Margaret Tully I OFTEN mention - well, basically all the time - about the different families to which plants belong.
Plants have always been given names based on their appearance, and 18th Century naturalist Carl Linnaeus made it easier for us to remember them. He did this by cutting down dozens of names given to each plant to just two. Linnaeus divided the plants into groups, based on how they looked (mainly the amount of sepals they had). The naturalist then gave each one a second name to offer more information on the way it looked, or where it had been discovered. He did travel, but it was impossible for one man to travel to all the ends of the earth and collect plant and animal data and samples. To make this enormous task easier, he “hired” his Apostles, recommending Swedish botanist Pehr Lofling as the best man for the job of exploring Spain’s hidden treasures. After he had exhausted the Mainland, the Spanish organised an expedition to South America in 1754, and Lofling went along. The first stop of their journey was in the Canary Islands, but for a short stay only. Yet it was enough time to find flora and send plant samples, drawings and
information on to Linnaeus. Within the plants found were the Salvias - or Sage plants, as they are commonly known. They belong to the Lamiaceae family, embracing the mints, basils, sages, lavenders and many more. *Salvia canariensis (Canary Island Sage), has deep-blue flowers. *Salvia broussonetti is a white-flowered Canarian variety. *Salvia canariensis var. candissima is a variegated-leafed Canary Island Sage. *Salvia aegyptiaca (Egyptian Sage) was also found by Lofling right here in Tenerife The sage plant of which most of us have heard, and probably used (sage and onion stuffing), is the Salvia officinalis, which has all the characteristics of a sage: the lancelotshaped leaves of a midgreen and an almost silvery look to the whole plant. The stem grows erect
and pink/purple or even blue flowers open to reveal a flower with the little lip and a hood. These flowers, and the leaves are both edible. It is a wonderful herb both for the cook and the herbalist. That’s because it is useful for relieving sore throats and also, if drunk as a cool tea, can be helpful with “night sweats”. But it must not be taken over a prolonged period. The salvia, or sage, has been used for centuries by different cultures, and none more so than
the Native American Indians, who used Salvia Apiana (White Sage, Bee Sage or Sacred Sage). And, as its Latin name suggests, it is pollinated by bees and probably, at a particular time in history, by one specific bee. The hood on the flower mentioned earlier acts as an anchor for the bee to latch on to, allowing for the pollen to go directly on to the bee’s back and then, when it moves to the next flower, the pollen rubs off on that as well … and so on.
The Indians used the sage to “clear” areas of any negativity, or bad air, by burning the dried leaves in a ritual known as smudging. Salvia verbenaca (Wild Clary Sage) is used in aromatherapy because it yields a lot of oil. It is a very strong plant, medicinally, and must be used with caution. Another member of the Lamiaceae family is the Sideritis canariensis, which looks just like a Salvia and was identified and catalogued by Linneaus. You can see it online at www.linnean. online.org/6975/ Much research has been done on the medicinal properties of this plant, and it has been found to be a very good analgesic and an antiinflammatory. The name given to this sage-like plant derives from Greek and has different meanings. it could be resembling an iron weapon, or it could mean it can heal someone who has been wounded by an iron weapon. But the sepal shape looks like the tip of a spear and, as Linneaus named his plants after their sepals, it is more likely in this case to be because of that. Its common names are ironwort or mountain tea. The shepherds used it to make a tea; hence the common name. And here in the Canaries, the shepherds clearly knew its worth. Sideritis barbellata is endemic to La Palma. Another Lamiaceae is Cedronella canariensis (Canary Island Balm), which is also known as the False Balm of Gile-
ad. The flowers of this plant are a delicious pale pink-and-white mix, and the plant’s name suggests its aroma is similar to that of the coniferous Cedrus: woody and earthy and rich. They are just like the sage flowers, with a double lip or beard, and bees love them. Herbs can actually promote the growth of other herbs. Herbgrowers have found that when you grow Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus), which is from the Asteraceae family, next to Sage (Salvia officinalis), they develop more intensive flavours and substance than if they are left simply to stand alone or among their own kind. Taking this into account, being able to have a garden full of Salvias - there are ornamental salvias as well as the herbs - would be a wonderful sight. But maybe it is best to mix them with different plants from other families which grow equally well in your garden space. This would ensure you get the best from your plants. It is a bit like bio-diversity. If you went to the supermarket every week and all it had in the fruit section were oranges, you would soon get fed up with them. But if a shop five minutes away always had a variety of fruit, you would soon go there. Insects, birds, etc are just like us in that respect because they also like variety. And plants benefit from the interaction between flora and fauna.

By Val Sainsbury NURSING cutbacks are directly linked to higher death rates in hospitals - and poorly- qualified nurses.
And every extra patient added to a nurse’s workload increases the risk of death within a month of surgery by 7%. That’s the findings of a major study, which embraced surveys from 300 European hospitals in nine countries. The researchers also ascertained that the situation was made worse through below-par nurses being employed. But those with university degrees went a long way towards making up for reduced staffing levels. In fact, a 10% increase in the proportion of nurses holding a bachelor degree was associated with 7% lower surgical death rates. The findings, published in the Lancet journal, included figures for 30 English hospitals showing, on average, that every one of their nurses looked after around nine patients. In some other countries, the patient-tonurse ratio was significantly smaller. Norway had a ratio of 5.2 to one, the Irish Republic 6.9, the Netherlands 7 and Finland and Sweden 7.6. Spain appeared to have the most overworked staff, with an average 12.7 patients per nurse. But every nurse there had a bachelor degree, compared with only 28% in England in 2009-10, when the facts were collected Since last September, every newly-qualified nurse in the UK has had to possess a university degree. Professor Linda Aiken, a US expert from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, led the research. She said: “Our findings emphasise the risk to patients that could emerge in response to nurse staffing cuts un-

der recent austerity measures. “They suggest that an increased emphasis on bachelor-degree education for nurses could reduce hospital deaths.” The study analysed information on more than 420,000 patients admitted to hospitals in Belgium, England, Finland, the Irish Republic, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland. Researchers compared nurse workload and education and patient outcomes, taking into account a number of factors which could influence the result. These included the age and sex of patients, types of surgical procedure, chronic conditions, and the kind of technology available in a hospital. The overall percentage of surgical patients who died within 30 days of admission was low, ranging between 1% and 1.5% per country. In England, the average rate was 1.4%. However, death rates in every country varied significantly between individual hospitals, with some losing up to 7% of surgical patients after 30 days. The highest risk of death after surgery was found in hospitals where nurses with lower levels of education cared for the most patients, said the researchers. A comparison was made between hospitals in which every nurse cared for an average of six patients and the proportion of degreeeducated staff was at least 60%, and those where nurses looked after eight patients each and just 30% had bachelor degrees. Hospitals with lighter workloads and more qualified nurses were expected to have 30% lower surgical death rates. Dr Aiken added: “Our data suggest that a safe level of hospital nursing staff might help reduce surgical mortality, and challenge the widelyheld view that nurses’ experience is more important than their education.” The European findings
closely mirrored similar trends seen in the US, said the researchers. Peter Carter, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), said: “It is worrying to see that researchers found the mean ratio of patients to nurses in England is above eight, as we know this can compromise patient safety. “The RCN has also expressed concern at the skills mix in UK hospitals as trusts get rid of more senior nurses to save money, which means there is far less experience on many wards.” Dr Carter pointed out that the findings sup-
ported the UK’s recent decision to make nursing an all-graduate profession. “Compassion and caring will always be at the heart of nursing practice and nurse training,” he said. “However, the demands of modern healthcare mean that this must be backed up by a higher level of education so that patients, who often have complex needs, receive skilled and compassionate care. “Modern medicine means that a nurse’s role is far more technical and requires complex decision-making, which demands a degree-level education, as well as the practical ex-
perience which currently makes up at least half of a nursing degree.” Organisations, including the RCN, have called for a minimum of one nurse for every eight patients. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said the Government would not introduce a legal minimum because staff requirements were a “different number for different wards”. He said that forcing hospitals to publish monthly data on ward staffing would be “a huge step” forward. Figures from the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) in January
showed a rise in the number of nurses working in hospitals under the acute, general and elderly category, with most of the increase attributable to first-level (more junior) nurses. There has been a drop in the number of other types of nurses, including community nurses, those for people with mental health problems and learning disabilities, community services and those working in schools. A poll of 526 nurses for Nursing Times magazine earlier in February revealed that 57% believed their wards were “dangerously understaffed”.
Dyslexia? It doesn’t make snese! DYSLEXIA is a meaningless label sought out by middle-class parents who are concerned that their children will be labelled stupid or lazy.
That’s the view of Professor Julian Elliott, an educational psychologist and former specialneeds teacher. He obviously understands that some children do have genuine, complex reading problems. However, he says the definition of dyslexia is so broad that it is impossible to make any meaningful separation from other poor readers. And trying to do so is a “pointless” waste of resources because the same techniques help both groups of children improve their reading. The professor, from Durham University professor, describes dyslexia as a “useless term” which should be abandoned. Rather than putting children though expensive and lengthy diagnostic tests, he believes that schools should focus on identifying those who struggle to read early on and treat equally all of those with problems.
However, charities disputed his claims and said a diagnosis of dyslexia has scientific and educational value. The British Dyslexia Association estimates that 10% of Britons have dyslexia, or word blindness, and have trouble learning to spell, read and write. While children diagnosed with the condition can get more individual teaching help and extra time on exams, Professor Elliott claims that their parents also benefit from the “pseudo-medical” label. Diagnoses tend to be found in more affluent areas, and he argues that some middle-class parents seek it out because they fear their
children will be judged slow or lazy. “Most parents are delighted with the label,” said the professor. “Professionals have told me that they agree, but they still use the term because it makes people happy.’ He also argues that the definition of dyslexia is so broad that it is meaningless. “You have a long list of symptoms - things like anxiety when reading out loud but any kid learning to read might be expected to show some anxiety,” says Prof Elliott. “You show parents this list and they say, ‘You are right, I didn’t realise my kid was dyslexic’. “It is like showing people a horoscope; they
look at it and see bits of themselves in it.” The professor adds that while parents may want the best for their children, they are being “woefully misled about the value of a dyslexia diagnosis”. In 2009, the Commons Science and Technology Committee inquiry into literacy concluded that the definition of dyslexia was too broad to be meaningful. The influential committee of MPs also accused the Government of “bowing to pressure from the dyslexia lobby” when formulating its educational policy. But Dr John Rack, from the charity Dyslexia Action, says: “The term has value, both scientifically and educationally. “We don’t accept the argument that it is wasteful to try to understand the different reasons why different people struggle. “And for very many, those reasons fall into a consistent and recognisable pattern that it is helpful to call it dyslexia. “It’s helpful for individuals because it makes sense out of past struggles, and helpful for teachers, who can plan the way they teach, to overcome or find ways around the particular blocks that are there.”

those FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Going down! Yes, flats really are in
By Carl from Robot

WHEN a client first walks through the door of any salon, it can be quite intimidating for her.
I TRY to talk not only about previous fashions, as I did in last week’s column, but also about what is up and coming.
She might feel embarrassed, or even afraid to enter at all. Yet having your hair done with a new stylist shouldn’t be a scary encounter. Sadly, for some it is. I hear people saying that they would rather visit the dentist, but finding the right stylist for you shouldn’t be painful. So why do many say that it is? Is it because some have had hair disasters, or perhaps they’ve grown tired of not getting what they ask for? The basis for finding the right stylist for you is to ask around. Look at your friends’ hair, and, if you like what you see, then ask where they go. Any salon can advertise what it does, or say what miracles its staff can perform. But the proof is in what you walk out of the salon
with and not what it promises to do. If I’m looking for a particular new service, I always ask friends - or even my clients - where to go. I don’t just jump at an advert I might see. There’s always a stylist suited to you, and it’s just a matter of finding them. After all, you can’t expect a salon to come looking for you. As a potential client, you should do your homework before waltzing into a new salon. Ask around for opinions of the salons you are
thinking of using - there are plenty to choose from here in Tenerife – and don’t simply jump in feet first. A free consultation should always be offered before you book an appointment, if you require one. Most salons consult you thoroughly before any scissors are picked up, or colours are used. Ask questions during your appointment, and do make sure you know what is going on. Leaving your opinions until the end may prove a little too late. As a salon owner, I always try to give my clients enough information about their hair as possible. Sometimes too much! But better that than keep them in the dark. So maybe now you will feel a little better next time you enter a new salon. And remember, most of us stylists don’t bite!

This summer sees women’s footwear becoming less elevated and more about comfort. Lauren Laverne states that heels are out and flats are in. No longer will ladies be squeezing their feet into shoes and stumbling around in 12in heels just to follow the fashion. Instead, they will be brought back down to earth in shoes that can actually be walked in. So what styles will we see hitting the shops this summer? We have the ballerina pumps, which have been around for a while now; plimsolls and loafers will be even more popular this year, and the slipper shoe will also start to vary in style. The recent fashion shows in New York and
in London last week have seen an increase in flat shoes being worn in their collections. It has been seen as okay to wear low shoes, with Karl Lagerfield having his models wearing Chanel sparkly-couture trainers. But it’s not just the fashion designers reverting to flat shoes but celebrities as well. Most recently spotted in flats is prominent heel-wearer Victoria Beckham, who said pre-
viously of flat shoes: “I hate flats. I can’t walk in them and I just don’t get it. I love heels.” And she is not the only one to perform an about-turn. At this year’s Golden Globes, Emma Thompson walked on stage and removed her heels, saying: “Why do we wear them? They are so painful and pointless really.’” Shoe retailer Dr Martens reported a 70% increase in sales in the lead-up to Christmas. The brand is said to have done well because artistes such as Miley Cyrus and model Agyness Deyn favour the company’s shoes. Lorna Hall, head of retail at a trend consultancy group, says that shoes reflect whatever clothing is in fashion at the moment. And with the more boyish fashion set to make an impact this Spring, flats are a must. But there will be those like me, who will always stick with the heels, either to slim the leg, give height or just because they make you feel good. For us, heels will always be here to stay. Renowned heel designer Christian Louboutin, who has been nicknamed “The King of painful shoes”, does not apologise for “not designing comfortable shoes”. However, even his Spring line includes brogues. So this Spring and Summer, it looks as though feet will have a break from being abused for fashion’s sake. And those who have taken to the flats will enjoy a stint of being fashionable and comfortable.

The language of wine is here
SPANISH school Babel Language Academy (Bla!) in El Médano joined forces this week with wine producers Frontos to combine some Canarian culture with language learning. A group of students studying Spanish at Bla! academy enjoyed an educational guided tour of the local vineyard in Chimiche. They saw how the wine
was produced and heard about the elaboration of the company’s popular, ecological white wine. They also enjoyed a wine-tasting session, accompanied by local cheeses, while practising their Spanish with other students from the school. Samantha Henderson, who owns the school, understands the importance of learning a lan-
guage in an enjoyable way. “At Bla! We try to collaborate with local businesses to give our students a more practical learning experience and take advantage of our ideal location here in Tenerife,” she said. “Our groups are filled with people of all different nationalities, who are keen on meeting new people and learning a little more about the rich Canarian culture. “So this visit to the bodega was another great way of enhancing their new language skills in a fun environment.” Babel Language Academy, which opened last September, has been organising various initiatives to keep students busy, and ensuring they make the most of their time on the Island. Every second Sunday, they have a conversation exchange in surf bar Chirinstones, in Plaza Galicia, which is in front of the school. It benefits not only their foreign students but also the local Spaniards learning English at Bla! Only a few weeks ago, they were also singing along to flamenco and digging in to some tasty tapas in Tasca La Corrala, Los Abrigos. For more information on the Spanish courses and events at Babel Language Academy, check out the website www.bla-tenerife.com If you are more interested in the wine, check out Frontos www.tierradefrontos.com.

Granny takes a trip
By Monica Dyson IT seems that even the simplest things in life can be denied to you at a time when, let’s face it, you need all the pleasures you can get! A recent report by the Department of Health in the UK says that the recommended safe limits for drinking alcohol by older people should be drastically cut; that it should be the equivalent of one bottle of beer a day for men, and one small glass of wine per day for women. The most popular drink among women is wine, with men preferring beer or lager. A number of women over 65 still enjoy the occasional glass of sherry, although this has lost its popularity with the present generation. Older drinkers are less able to process alcohol, and it may also be that drinking might react with any other medication they might be taking. Apparently, many older drinkers are drinking to a level which is having a long-term impact on their health, even if the damage they are doing is not always apparent. I must admit that we did tend to drink more than usual on an extended holiday in Tenerife. Somehow, it seems to go with the sun and general relaxation. New NHS statistics show that the over-65s are more likely to drink every day of the week than young people. And alcohol-related admissions to hospital, for everything from liver disease to dementia caused by the brain cells being killed off by booze, are soaring by 150% in those aged between 60 and 74. A recent survey
suggested that women over 65 drink more often than their younger counterparts, with many consuming alcohol at least five days a week, and smokers are twice as likely to drink heavily each week. People who have enjoyed a drink all their adult lives believe they will have built up a tolerance to booze. That is, if they think about it at all! But the fact is that alcohol can cause more damage to the ageing body than to that of any other age. And because many pensioners drink at home, it can be very much a hidden problem. When asked about their intake of alcohol, many were blasé about the possible dangers, saying they had drunk for many years without it being a problem. However, people did say that they found it more difficult as they got older to recover from drinking, sometimes unable to function properly the next day, and with only a sketchy memory of what they had done. A bit like jet lag, in fact! But then, there were those who said they drank to alleviate pain, because they were lonely, bereaved, or simply because they felt that
at their age, what did it matter? And they didn’t see themselves as irresponsible drinkers, or even hard drinkers. That was certainly the viewpoint of a group of my friends, all of advancing years. As one said: “If there is one section of the population who deserve to be left in peace with their gin and
tonic, it is us oldsters! So, we drink more than we did 30 years ago. But we couldn’t afford more than the occasional bottle of wine then - usually a cheap bottle of Lambrusco. We had children to get to school each morning, and often a job to go to. We enjoy a drink now because it’s a nice way to end the day. It’s re-
laxing, and we don’t have to go out of the house into the cold. And those of us on our own wouldn’t feel good about going into a pub on our own anyway. For some of us, it’s our way of unwinding and relaxing. We don’t cause any trouble. We don’t go around punching people and indulging in other kinds of anti-social behaviour. We can’t afford to drink too much, anyway. We’re on a pension for goodness sake! And as pensioners, there’s not much to look forward to - not even good geriatric healthcare! It was suggested recently that alcohol was more harmful to society than drugs. Also, that there was a growing problem of substance abuse among older people, who are described as “society’s invisible addicts”. Almost 900 pensioners needed hospital treatment in the UK last year after poisoning themselves with drugs like cocaine and cannabis, and more than 50% of
them were over 70. Some experts have blamed this increase on the “free love” generation, because many people of this age would have been twentysomethings during the experimental age of the Sixties, and many may have continued to use drugs all their lives. I am amazed at these findings because, in my experience, we found it easier to find aspirins during the Sixties than illicit drugs! It was reported a week or so ago that Paul McCartney, now 71, had recently given up cannabis after 50 years. Perhaps his knighthood was a bit premature! There was a famous Chelsea boutique which opened in 1966 called Granny Takes a Trip. It was named after a song by the band Purple Gang, which was banned by the BBC for its drugs connotation. Trip being the result of taking LSD. But perhaps the name was rather prophetic, now that it seems many grannies are doing just that!
Free concert for all
IF you are looking for something a bit different in the way of entertainment, pop along to tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) free choir concert in Los Cristianos Cultural Centre. It starts at 7pm and the
programme comprises a selection of zarzuelas (light Spanish operettas - think Spanish Gilbert and Sullivan). The choir forms part of the Arona School of Music & Dance (Escuela de Música y Danza de
Arona) and has around 15 members from several countries - not just locals - and they are always looking to welcome new members to their friendly group. They sing mainly in
Spanish, but have also performed pieces in English, French, Italian and even Latin! The programme will last around 30-45 minutes, and you are sure to find it most enjoyable.

Sur Lions let their hair down on Charter Night TENERIFE Sur Lions Club celebrated its 29th Charter Year in formal style on Saturday at the Paradise Park Hotel in Los Cristianos.
Dinner suits and elegant dresses were the order, and more than 60 members and guests gathered on the hotel’s terrace for pre-dining drinks and canapes. Prior to the meal, Li-
ons’ President Norman Goodall MBE (right) welcomed everyone, saying that the occasion was predominantly a celebration of the club’s Charter Anniversary, complete with party atmosphere. He paid tribute to the people who staffed the club’s charity shops in Costa del Silencio and Los Cristianos, and he praised the public for their tremendous level of support, both buying and donating items. He emphasised that without both, Tenerife
READ ALL ABOUT... THE PAPER SHOP
NESTLED within the heart of the Apolo Centre, Los Cristianos, lies one of the most useful shops to both holidaymakers and British ex-pats.
It’s called The Paper Shop, and this familyrun business has been established over 15 years, supplying British newspapers and magazines to the local ex-pat community. But it does not stop there. The shop stocks an excellent collection of greetings cards, covering every possible occasion, together with accessories such as balloons, candles and banners, Mother’s Day, and Easter Sunday are just a few weeks away, so the shop will be stocking a plethora of Easter eggs and cards, as well as cards for all your mums from 10th March. The shop also stocks stationary, and a full range of puzzle books: Crosswords, Wordsearch, Sudoku, etc, and can reserve magazines or papers for customers who live here.
Travellers can purchase Bono tickets from The Paper Shop - and if you run out of credit on your mobile, you can also top up your phone. And phone cards, which can be used at phone boxes, and in hotels, are also supplied. If you have just arrived, you can also purchase a pay-as-you-go mobile with a new sim card, which already has a five-euro credit on it. Don’t forget that you need to take your passport and NIE number along so that your new mobile can be registered. The shop also stocks kettles, hairdryers, slow-cookers, and English food products, including fresh bread, and Greenhalgh’s Pies, bacon, etc. All in all, The Paper Shop really is a terrific asset to the local community. It opens seven days a week, from 8.15am until 6.45pm, except Sundays, when it closes at 4pm. So pop along and see for yourself. It is on the south side of the Apolo Centre, near the bus stops, and there is plenty of car parking available.

Claudia got the entertainment off to an excellent start with a medley of popular songs, followed by husband George, whose zany slant to his superb operatic voice was hysterical. With familiar songs from “That 70s Band” filling the dance floor, the birthday celebration continued late into the night.
Sur Lions Club would be unable to fulfil the increasing number of requests from local governments and social services to help families in real distress, not just with food but with clothing and other household essentials. Finally, Norman thanked all the members, wives, partners and helpers for supporting the event, with a particular thanks to Ken and Beryl Sadler, who organised the whole evening. With the formalities over, the guests enjoyed their five-course menu, accompanied by excellent wines and finishing
Help give Candy a sweet life CANDY was rescued from Adeje kennels just before Christmas by our friend Regina Queder, who runs MADAT - Manos Amigos de los Animales Tenerife.
Candy has a congenital heart defect called Ductus Arterioso Persistiente, which means that one of the arteries which allows blood to flow from one side of the heart to the other did not close off properly when she was born. If Candy does not have an operation, her life could be very hard. She may not survive much longer, and, during this period, she will become short of breath through lack of oxygenated blood-flow, which will put extra strain on her heart and body. The operation is openheart surgery, and there will be a need for intensive recuperation and care.
Our vet, Cesar Bertoldi, will perform the operation and she will then return to Sharon Edens, her foster Mum, for recuperation. Candy also needs scans and X-rays before the operation and, as you can imagine, all this will cost a significant sum. MADAT do not have the funds to cover this, so a fund-raiser is being held to raise the money to save Candy.
It takes place next S (9th March) at Eurobar, Coral Mar Square, Costa del Silencio. What we need from you is support: attend, enjoy, participate, buy a raffle ticket or even entertain (acts please call Sharon on 671 783 117 if you can spare 15 minutes of your time). You can also donate raffle prizes, tombola prizes, cash, bbq items - and again, call Sharon for more info. See you
there - let’s save a life. Katie’s birthday bbc Our horse Katie will be 13 years this week and we are having a party! Come and join us at Horse Riding Adventures this Sunday (2nd March) for a birthday barbecue as we celebrate not only her birthday, but those of Alfie, Olivia and Luke, which all fall at the same time. There will be food and drink aplenty, from 2pm.

Motoring

Note this new Nissan
By Jav NISSAN’s updated Note isn’t particularly stylish, and it’s not even a fun car to drive.
But it has that all-important factor for those looking to keep their motoring costs low: the diesel model promising 78.5mpg. In addition, there is loads of space inside and plenty of room in the back seats, making it a perfect family car. Okay, the new model isn’t exactly “urban cool”, but it has a certain charm compared with the previous version, which featured more pronounced MPV overtones. There are also engine changes, with two new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engines in the lineup. The chassis has been tweaked for European roads, making it a better drive as well. Nissan have also introduced plenty of new safety equipment, including a surroundview camera system, lane-departure warning and blind-spot monitoring. And the Japanese company are offering four, good-value trim levels
THIS is a design sketch “teaser” of Audi’s forthcoming third-generation TT, released by the company ahead of the influential Geneva Motor Show, which begins on Thursday (6th March).
That’s when the German firm will unveil the latest version of their popular sports coupe. And although technical details have hardly been forthcoming, it is obvious that the design is more of an evolutionary step from the current model. Audi are banking on the car’s overall look to align it more closely with the pioneering first-generation TT. There’s promise of an increased use of LED technology for the lights, and more radical chang-
from which to choose: Visia, Acenta, Acenta Premium and Tekna. The diesel version will probably be favoured most because it is genuinely economy-conscious, and it is punchy on the road. But the 1.2 petrol version is more suited for shorter journeys. It is definitely a bit classier than before, with bold headlamps and smart lines cut into the bodywork sides, which gives the model a much more attractive appearance than the old MPV-style Note. Okay, it’s no style ri-
val to the MINI or Ford Fiesta, but it is a sensible, practical kind of supermini, much like the Honda Jazz. On the plus side, the interior is upmarket, with a curved dashboard and smart, backlit dials, plus a glossblack centre console. And there’s heaps of equipment as standard. All models are fitted with Bluetooth and cruise control, while the Acenta Premium has sat-nav, climate control, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls and rear privacy glass. The Note is easy to
drive around town, thanks to its compact size and light controls, while the £400 Safety Shield option includes a surround-view camera system which is a great help for easing into the tightest of parking spaces. It gets a bit unsettled on the motorway, and the engine labours on steep inclines. But the proven running gear underneath means it’s sure to be a dependable supermini, and a threeyear/60,000-mile warranty gives good peace of mind. Heaven forbid you
should need one, but a breakdown recovery package is included for the same period. As for safety, all models get six airbags, stability control and tyre pressure monitoring. And it is one of the most practical cars in its class, thanks partly to some clever packaging. The wide-opening doors mean it is easy to climb inside, and the big windows make the cabin feel airy and spacious. There are plenty of storage spaces around the cabin and also a huge glovebox. Shame about the small door
pockets, though. All engines are equipped with stop-start technology, which, as mentioned, helps the 1.5-litre diesel engine return 78.5mpg, the 1.2-litre DIG-S petrol 65.7mpg and the 1.2-litre petrol 60.1mpg. There’s even an eco mode that encourages you to drive smoothly to improve your economy figures. Prices range from £11,900-£16,950, and Nissan also offer a £199 pre-paid servicing pack, giving three years/36,000 miles of routine maintenance.
Audi sketch in their new TT...
es have been made in the cabin. A recent preview of the car’s interior at a technology show revealed an allnew instrument display, incorporating conventional dials alongside a multi-media and navigation display which can be customised. Buyers can expect to see the car in showrooms later this year, with the convertible variant following later. For now though, Thursday’s Geneva Show will answer many questions about Audi’s revamped coupe.

Dare we dream of the P word?
LET’S start with a really fun fact. If the league had started on 1st January, Tenerife would be top.
A pessimist would say that suggests the league is poor. A realist will tell you that Tenerife could be in for an amazing few months. The goal is, and always has been, safety. The chairman said it, the director of football said it, the manager, the players, the guy who waves the flag - everyone! BUT… Put it like this. Let’s say this was a game of Deal or No Deal. You tell yourself that after weeks of opening boxes for people you really can’t stand, weeks of false smiles and fake kisses, you would happily go home with 10,000 quid. Then your big moment is here and you are down to the last five boxes. You have three blue boxes, a box for five grand and the jackpot box. You have the 250,000 Daddy box out there somewhere. The weird bloke with
the beard says the offer is 10 grand. It’s what you came for, but do you deal? Do you take the money and try to bed “Sally from Droitwich”, who has been standing next to you for the last fortnight? Or does that little voice in your head say: “Go for it?”
Position
The thing with football is that you never ever know what’s inside the next box. The best-laid plans of mice and men, and all that. Sunday’s stunning win at Lugo, and it was stunning, moved Tenerife up to ninth place. One point from the playoffs. This was the fourth

away win in the last five trips to the mainland. And since everyone agrees that 50 points is the watermark for safety, we are just 13 points from Mission Accomplished. But why settle? And at some stage this week, this would have been discussed by the bigwigs. Manager Alvaro Cervera has played a blinder all season, and his squad-rotation policy is the talk of the league. No two sides are ever the same, and it’s working a treat. But this was based on the goal of survival. A few times already this season, Tenerife have taken the easy point, the cautious point. Every little helps. Now, though, we are talking about something completely different. This weekend, for example, is a tricky trip to the fast-improving kids of Real Madrid Castilla. They lost their first three home matches and didn’t really find their groove until November. Let’s say it’s 1-1 with 20 minutes to go. What does Cervera do? Stick in a holding midfielder and protect the point, or throw on another
forward and chase the win? Leading sides Zaragoza, Recreativo and Sporting have all won at Castilla, while mid table Real Murcia and Ponferradina have taken the point. And it’s those two points which will make all the difference in June. There are 15 matches to go and, unless something ridiculous happens, Tenerife should find the 13 points they need to be safe. So why not roll the dice? On Sunday they were magnificent from 1-11, as we use to say. Hat-tip to Roberto in goal and two goal-hero Ayoze. The kids were top drawer, and it was great to see Luismi Loro playing and enjoying his football. New boy Edgar was again busy, and the only fly in the ointment was Moyano’s booking, which rules him out of the Castilla match. And I must give a special mention to Ricardo. I, like most fans, didn’t want him back in the summer. I was a big fan of his until the second relegation season. And when I saw him in the friendly with CD Marino, I booed. Loud. That said, I’m big
enough to put my hand up and say I got it wrong. Big time. He has been a revelation. On Sunday he was like the Road Runner on Red Bull. His partnership with Aitor Sanz, and his understanding with senior centre-back Carlos Ruiz, have been the cornerstone of the recent success. It’s only a matter of time before he starts to chip in with some goals (which he use to do), and then he will be a candidate for Player of the Season. Okay, we know Ayoze will win that, but you take my point. The trip to the capital sees a fresh challenge. The hosts are going nicely, but, like all young teams, they have a few setbacks. A couple of players are injured and also, Castilla have a few suspensions. And Tenerife have a great carrot. The Saturday-night kick-off means that a win will see us leapfrog Las Palmas and sit in the top five, albeit for just a few hours. THAT would clear the minds and set the agenda for the season. Promotion campaign? Deal!

Capital One Cup Final
It’s Cup final weekend, and try telling the supporters of Man City and Sunderland that it’s only the League Cup, or Capital One Cup as it’s now known. On paper you can only see one outcome but Wigan proved last year in the FA Cup final that Man City can be beaten. City have a team full of superstars and will be favourites but they have been off form of late and struggled against Norwich and more recently Stoke.
They will be desperate to lift the trophy and give manager Manuel Pellegrini and first piece of silverware. This week star striker Sergio Aguero was back in training and there is every chance he could get some game time at Wembley. In many ways Sunderland have nothing to lose. They were awful against Arsenal in the league last week and their manager Gus Poyet said: “If we play like that at Wembley we will
be embarrassed.” That said, they can turn it on when it matters. They saw off Man Utd over two legs in the semi finals after knocking out Chelsea in the last 8. A win would also see them play European football next season and they will be watching Wigan’s FA Cup win on DVD before the match. In previous years Birmingham upset Arsenal to lift this Cup and maybe lightening will strike twice?

Inn the Pink B are still sitting pretty at the top and, on paper, they look home and hosed. But there are a couple of challengers, and one team have flown out of the chasing pack. Palms B have games in hand and will fancy their chances, but watch out for Bluebell B. They have had a great week and are now in third place. Firstly, they earned bar bragging rights with a win over Bluebell A. Then they chinned fellow promotion hopefuls Gaffers B. Both matches finished 7-5, which shows their fighting spirit. They have a couple of games in hand which could put them within touching distance of the top spot. And they have lost only once since mid-October. Inn The Pink B did
their bit, easing past Hoppys 10-2, and the previously-mentioned Gaffers B managed a point in their other game against Toscales B. Elsewhere, Exiles B are also still in the promotion hunt, grabbing the points against 2JZ’s. Picasso’s A had an eye-catching win this week at Next Door bar, while Terrace Bar B also got back to winning ways with a solid victory over Treehouse B. Rounding the fixtures off, Kandi 13 were good value for their win over Tenerife Pool Tables. With the top two teams going up, every side in the top six still have a genuine chance of promotion. It was as you were in Division One. Holders Hammers A kept up their good form, retaining top spot with a comfortable victory over The Peacocks. Second-place Gaffers A, still just a point behind, have not been at their best in the last couple of games - but they’re still getting the results. Phoenix Potters, their latest prey at least gave them a run for their

The Potters still look good for a top-five finish, but they need to win their two games in hand. Phoenix Knights are looking comfortable in third place after a routine win over Terrace Bar A, who were let down on the night by Mal losing all three games. If you see him out and about, ask him about his wooden spoon.
Exiles A faced La Caña A on Tuesday night, securing the three points they needed to jump above La Caña into fourth spot. The teams are level on points, but Exiles have a game in hand and, a win would put daylight between themselves and La Caña. Palms A have topfour ambitions, but they came unstuck on Tuesday against in-form Dreamers. The boys from Los Cristianos flew out of the traps and, before

They rallied to take two more games to make the scoreline a little more respectable, but Dreamers were always in control. In the final fixture of the night, Ham-
mers C helped themselves in their fight for survival by putting up a spirited performance against Inn the Pink A. They held their nerve and took all three points, which could prove vital come the end of the season.
Steve gets that ‘squeaky’ feeling ANOTHER week passes by, and we get another game closer to the end of the Premier League season. It has been good fun, especially in the Oasis Fm Fantasy League, where the so-called experts are moving slowly backwards through the table. It certainly is interesting to watch the league unfold, given that there are teams managed by people who feel they are football experts, teams
who have been put together purely based on guesswork, as well as the “experts” already mentioned. Looking at the team of the week in terms of most points scored by individual players, it seems that Man Utd won a game this week, as it is the first time in ages that one of their players has made the team, along with stars from Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Hull, Liverpool and West Ham.
Notably, not one Man City player made the grade - they really are out of form at the wrong time! Alex Ferguson coined the phrase “SqueakyBum Time”, and big Man Utd fan Steve Schofield, whose Tenerife Hotspurs lead the league, will know exactly what he means. His lead at the top has been cut to just 27 points after a poor week, with Andy Palm-
er really pushing him now. But neither of those two coached the team of the week. That honour fell to Nick Abbot, whose Athletico Abbottski team scored a whopping 95 points to move him nicely up the league table. It’s as you were in the battle of the DJ’s, with Adi Benson leading from Chris Elkington, then Roscoe and Maggie Lennard bringing up the rear. So with only a few
games left, it’s time to make some final tweaks, and to see if
some sort of pride can be rescued with a top 10 finish.

Fabulous Four go clear, but it is too hard to call By Adi Benson WE now have a top four in the League who are putting distance between themselves and the teams behind them.
There’s a six-point gap between fourth and fifth, but it is still not clear where the title will go. And this weekend also sees the Capital One League Cup Final, but let’s look at the Premier League first. Stoke v Arsenal (Saturday, 3pm) Stoke will feel they were unlucky not to get a point against Man City last weekend. They defended well and were resolute throughout, but it just wasn’t to be as they lacked any real cutting edge in front of goal. They are at home this time, though, and with the fans behind them, they’ll fancy having a go at Arsenal. If they play a physical game, they may get their just rewards. Arsenal looked back to their attacking best against Sunderland. Ozil was rested after his penalty miss against Bayern - and they looked better without him in the team. Prediction: Away win Everton v West Ham (Saturday, 3pm) Everton thought they had a good point wrapped up last week at Chelsea. Earlier in the season they would have looked at this game and seen nothing beyond
three points. But they are wobbling and West Ham have hit a rich vein of form. In their last three games, West Ham have been without the suspended Andy Carroll, so they have played a different way and it has paid dividends. They have taken nine points and have moved up to 10th in the League, seven points off the relegation zone. They will look to continue that run and will take inspiration from Everton’s recent form. Prediction: Away win Fulham v Chelsea (Saturday, 3pm) Welcome to the Premier League Felix McGath. Fulham’s new manager thought he had inspired his team to a win last week at West Brom, but they were eventually held to
a draw. They are still rooted to the bottom of the league and four points off the safety mark. But anything can happen in a Derby match. Chelsea stuck with it against Everton and grabbed the points late on and this should be an easier afternoon. The main question mark over the team is
the lack of goals from their strikers. With just 11 games remaining, can they score the goals and get the results they need to win the league? Prediction: Away win Hull v Newcastle (Saturday, 3pm) Hull delivered a great performance last week at Cardiff to put themselves six points clear of the relegation zone. They really were top drawer in Wales, and their tails are up. And a few more fine performances will see the “Huddlestone for England” chants returning. Newcastle finally got back to winning ways at home against Aston Villa, and they need to continue the momentum. But Hull just look too strong. Prediction: Home win Soton v Liverpool (Saturday, 5.30pm) Southampton will still be licking their wounds after a poor showing against West Ham. I
ventured last week that their season was effectively over, and it will be interesting to see how they fare against Liverpool. They have the talent to derail the Scousers’ title bid, especially after seeing how easily Swansea scored against Liverpool. Brendan Rodgers this week pledged not to change Liverpool’s style of play and his mantra is: “You score 3, we’ll score 4.” Great for the neutral, but not for the die-hard Red. Prediction: Draw Aston Villa v Norwich (Sunday, 4.30pm) Two teams level on points and both four points above the relegation places. This has classic written all over it! (I was being sarcastic). Villa were unlucky against Newcastle and, at times, I thought they were the better team. But they conceded late. They are still in danger and these games are must-wins, especially against their relegation rivals. Norwich will be buoyed after their win over Spurs, but that may have been down to Spurs playing in Europe on the Thursday night prior to that fixture. Chris Hughton will not care about that because he knows a win here will give them some real breathing space. Prediction: Home win Swansea v C Palace (Sunday, 4.30pm) The Swans will wonder how they didn’t get a point against
Liverpool. You’d have thought scoring three goals at Anfield would have been enough. They face a tough game in Italy against Napoli on Thursday night and I think this will cause them problems on Sunday. Fatigue will play a part and if they lose to Napoli, they don’t have a lot of time to dust themselves down. Palace, on the other hand, will be nice and refreshed and looking forward to this game. Tony Pulis is being touted as manager of the season if he keeps them up. Some good recent performances have given them hope, and three points here could really move them up the table, dependent on the results of the teams around them. This is an ideal time for them to be playing Swansea. Prediction: Away win Spurs v Cardiff (Sunday, 4.30pm) Hands up if you can work Spurs out. They were going well under Tim Sherwood, and then they stink the place out at Carrow Road. If they want Champions League football next season, they can’t afford to lose this one. Cardiff have real problems after being soundly beaten by one of their relegation rivals last week. They are running out of games and maybe Ole Solskjaer is already running out of time. Would you bet your house on him still having a job if they let in five at Spurs? Prediction: Home win
