A tribute to the hero who changed course of history for Spain

ADOLFO SUAREZ, Spain’s first democratically-elected Prime Minister after the dictatorship of Francisco Franco, has died at the age of 81.

Suarez, key figure in the country’s transition to democracy, was rushed to hospital in Madrid on Sunday suffering from a respiratory infection and died a few hours later. He had been battling Alzheimer’s for 10 years. Three official days of mourning have been observed and thousands of people queued to file past his coffin in the lower house of parliament. He was buried on Tuesday in his home town of Avila, and a state funeral will be held on Monday in Madrid’s Almudena Cathedral. King Juan Carlos, who turned to him upon Franco’s death in 1975 to try to unite Spain’s disparate political factions, described him as “Spain’s best president. His moral stature and sense of the state were key to the success of the transition and of the democracy.” Former PM Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said: “Prime Minister Suarez’s political career calls to mind the highest spirit of our democratic transition: rec-

ognition of dissenting voices, promotion of tolerance and the practice of dialogue. “Thanks to that attitude, he had the capacity to forge great agreements.” The Spanish Government has confirmed that Madrid’s main airport will be renamed after him as a token of appreciation, The airport, now known as Barajas, will have a name change

to Adolfo Suarez, Madrid-Barajas. The airport will be renamed to “honour his memory and acknowledge the historic role of the first Prime Minister of our democracy”, said the Public Works Ministry. Suarez was a career politician, holding senior roles in the country’s only legal political party, The National Movement, under the Franco

dictatorship. When Franco died in November 1975, there was a power vacuum which took six months to resolve. When King Juan Carlos was finally able form a workable government, he drew up a shortlist of three men to become the new Prime Minister. After liaising with Torcuato FernándezMiranda, President of the Council of the King-

dom, he turned to Suarez - seen as a safe pair of hands - to become Prime Minister. Suarez had to guide the new administration through a logistical minefield. He was fiercely unpopular with the Left, who distrusted him because of his political work under Franco, while the Centre was just as cautious. He skilfully kept the business of Government away from any military influence, and this strengthened his and the King’s position. Suarez drew up a twopoint plan to stabilise the country’s democracy. Firstly, he developed “La Transicion”, which was the development of a “Law for Political Reform”. The idea was that the Spanish Parliament would call a public referendum, which would vote on Fernández-Miranda’s recommendation of a new constitutional and democratic process. Suarez’s skill was to get politicians from all sides to agree, firstly, to this, and then for the public to rubber-stamp it. To help this, he freed political prisoners, promised an amnesty on anti-government groups and acts, disbanded the TOP (Franco’s secret police), decriminalised trade unions, opened communications with the Basque region and

promised a country “of the people for the people”. Secondly, Suarez promised free and transparent General Elections. Under these promises, Spain fell in line behind his new Government and, in June 1977, free elections were held for the first time in 41 years. Suarez was voted in by the public - and he was true to his word. His government drafted a Constitution which, in December 1978, was approved by the public in a referendum. Yes, there were some bumps in the road, and he had to make some “tough love” decisions, but history shows that Suarez did a remarkable job. He stood down in January 1981, and encouraged a new age of politics. The King showed his gratitude by making him the Duke of Suarez, and there is no doubt that the stability of the crown was, in part, down to the skill of Suarez. This week Suarez’s son, Adolfo Suarez Illana, praised the roles played by his father and the King in the postFranco period. Illana said: “Thanks to the King, he was head of government. Thanks to the king, he was able to do what he liked at a unique moment in the history of Spain. Together, they changed the course of history.”

Rivero’s ‘State of the Nation’ political battle over oil search CANARY Islands President Paulino Rivero opened Parliament on Wednesday, 24 hours after the event was scheduled.

It was the sixth time he had performed the ceremony, and it was delayed because of the funeral and tributes for former Spanish PM Adolfo Suárez. It was the 19th annual policy debate, officially known as the “State of the Nation” address. In his blog post on Sunday, Rivero wrote: “A new era is coming that demands of politics, and politicians, an

ability to understand.” It was posted just hours before news broke of the passing of Suárez, who oversaw the transition from Franco’s rule to a democratic parliamentary monarchy, and who embodied harmony. Rivero added, “Now is not the time for experiments and improvisations.” During his speech, Rivero spoke of trying to reconcile with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, with whom a rift has been forming for some time. The Canaries’ President spoke of “righting the ship,” and of making steps in the right direction, particularly with signs that the re-

cession is ending, and economic recovery is becoming more tangible. He addressed, among other issues, the proposed referendum regarding the search for oil off the Canary Islands, saying he has yet to receive a reply from the Government. He is expecting a response, and has asked that all permissions for drilling be rescinded until such time as a response has been received, and an understanding reached. Rivero said of this particular issue: “It is one that goes beyond the legal and environmental concerns, and the model for growth. This is a matter of po-

litical significance.” He stressed: “We cannot hide behind legal reasons which are in the interest of a multinational, without consulting the view of the Canarian people.” He also made it clear that the area where drilling is proposed is in “Canarian waters,” adding, “We are not isolated islands; we are an archipelago of islands united by the sea,” reminding everyone that there is a Spanish law (which has not been repealed) which acknowledges ownership. And that, in his opinion, means that the people of the Canaries should decide what happens in the Islands waters.

President’s Papal day out BARACK OBAMA, enjoying a mini-European tour this week, has met Pope Francis for the first time. The US President described the Pope as

a man who “lived the Christian Gospel”, and said it was a “great honour” to meet him. He spent a day in Rome after three days of talks with world lead-

ers in the Netherlands and Brussels, where the ongoing Ukraine crisis was the main focus. Ben Rhodes, US Deputy National Security Adviser, said the President

had been inspired by Pope Francis’ messages of inclusion and equality, and that Obama expressed his appreciation for his leadership. The Pope and the

President have widely differing views on some key subjects, such as abortion, contraception and gay marriage. But the meeting was said have been positive

and constructive. After their get-together, Obama met both Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

Our strong links with Vietnamese JOSÉ Manuel García-Margallo Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Co-operation, deemed his recent trip to Vietnam a complete success.

During his brief stay, he chaired a session called “Vietnam and Spain: Growing Opportunities”, and met with Spanish and Vietnamese businesses leaders. The minister highlighted the great commercial bond between Spain and Vietnam, with bi-

lateral trade exceeding 2,000 million euros in 2013. Spanish exports in 2013 increased by 20% and imports by 6.8%. As for investments, he has emphasised the importance of having favourable foreign investment laws, and mutual understanding through more frequent contacts. García-Margallo also visited the Mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh City, where he laid a wreath. He held a meeting with Vietnam Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, indicating that the purpose of his trip was to give new impetus

WHO’s happy?

THE World Health Organisation said this week that the world was 80% polio free and that the South East Asia region was clear.

The important certification is a historic milestone in the WHO’s global fight to eradicate the deadly virus. This latest development was made after it was revealed that India had gone three years without an official new case of polio. The group says that in South East Asia region,

Sri Lanka, Maldives and Bhutan are now free of the virus and have been for more than 15 years. But the disease is still endemic in Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. The WHO admits there are still major challenges to overcome before it reaches its goal of eradicating polio by 2018 - as recent outbreaks in Syria have demonstrated. Polio mainly affects young children in the modern world, especially those under five. The virus is transmitted through contaminated food and water, where it multiplies in the intestine and attacks the nervous system.

to bilateral relations, incorporating civil society and economic actions in the dialogue between the two countries. Meanwhile, Pham Binh Minh thanked Spain the first EU country to invest in Vietnam, when it established a strategic partnership in 2009.

The minister also stressed that Spain was not only a strategic partner, but a friend of Vietnam. From an economic point of view, Spain has developed a programme of financial co-operation, which is now well structured.

There are four main protocols, the latter of which has been extended until next February and includes new deals with Ho Chi Minh, worth over 200 million euros. Minh also pointed out the enormous potential of Spanish companies

investing in the region, especially in sectors such as infrastructure, technology and transport. In the field of defence, both foreign ministers have agreed to hold talks on future areas of co-operation in this field.

No Russian revolution THE number of Russian tourists going to Spain this summer could drop by as much as 30%.

That’s the bad news according to the Spanish Government’s Tourism Minister José Manuel Soria, who attributes the decline to EU sanctions against Russia, because of the Crimea crisis and annexation. However, the Government assures Russians that they will have no trouble being issued with tourist visas.

Soria spoke after closing the 22nd Annual Forum Management Excellence Club. He had already pointed out that the effect of the sanctions had not reflected on visas being issued. But he predicted “reduced consumer purchasing power, and a lower number of visitors”. The devaluation of the rouble is partly to blame, but Soria insists that this is not because of the sanctions. The hotel industry, on the other hand, expects that the rouble devaluation and “possible”

restrictions on the issuance of visas for Russian citizens will bring down arrivals. Rafael Gallego, of the Spanish Federation of Travel Agencies (CEAV), says that estimates point to a decline of 10-30% in Russian tourists, although he adds that some locations will be more affected than others. High on the list of areas expected to suffer is Tenerife, which faces stiff competition from Turkey as a burgeoning destination for Russian visitors, and also Mallorca. Ramón Estalella, of

the Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation (CEHAT), also believes that numbers will fall, but he stressed that this would not be noticed immediately, as travel arrangements have to be finalised three months before arrival Estalella believes Russian tourists will begin to choose other destinations, some of which are in direct competition with Spain, particularly those with a more favourable exchange rate, such as Dubai or Turkey.

Binter’s 25 birthday bash th

VARIOUS events took place on Wednesday to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Canary Islands’ airline Binter Canarias.

The company was formed on 26th March 1989 at 8am, when the first flight left Gran Canaria, bound for Tenerife. And the morning

celebration included the crew who were on board the inaugural flight. Another in-house party took place in the afternoon at Binter’s

Tenerife base, honouring a number of staff who have been with the company since the beginning. Then, to round of a perfect day, there were

two street parties in the evening: one in Calle Triana, in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, and the other in Calle La Carrera, La Laguna. And some of Binter’s

customers were in attendance, along with company representatives.

Arona Police reject overtime ARONA Police have twice turned down overtime - at 24 euros an hour - because of unresolved problems.

They have said a firm No at their last two meetings with heads of the department, ac-

cording to the syndicate representing the majority of public service employees (Central Sindical Independiente y de Funcionarios, or CSI-F). Serious internal problems and a lack of harmony between the Police and the union are evident, said a spokesman. In January, the num-

ber of policemen taking sick leave hit an all-time high, and some even found extra jobs while taking leave from work, One public service employee who called in sick, then flew to El Hierro to perform as a singer with an orchestra, it was revealed last week. The last two occasions

when overtime was requested and rejected were the opening of the Hard Rock Café, and the weekend’s Carnaval celebrations in Los Cristianos. Just three agents volunteered For the Hard Rock Café stint, and only one agent and one officer enrolled for overtime shifts at the Carnaval.

According to the CSIF, the reasons are many and varied, and include the danger of the job, the apparent lack of workplace risk-prevention, unapproved changes to working hours, as well as extended working hours (agents worked an average of 1,664 hours in 2013) Police overtime pay is

set in Arona at 24 euros per hour, and agents work six days on, four days off, mostly in 12hour shifts. Arona does not anticipate requesting reinforcements from other areas for the ongoing Carnaval celebrations because of the general instability of the situation.

Just a Fool for liking the Fool

THERE are some traditions that need to be pensioned off and consigned to history. I feel we are past making Guys on 5th November, I don’t think anyone now dances around the Maypole on 1st May - and it’s been decades since I’ve seen a Pearly Queen in East London. I’m still waiting for Man United fans to stop signing “Knick Knack Paddy Whack, give a dog a bone.” (WTF!) and I reckon the internet has killed off my pet hate: April Fool’s Day. I hated it as a child and I loathe it as an adult. The lamest of lame “jokes” and stupidity labelled up as “fun”. And my profession doesn’t exactly help the cause. Every year, national newspapers who should know better, put up stupid stories that you can see a mile off, just for “fun”. They should concentrate on getting us to believe what they normally write, rather than these “laughs”. And worryingly, people fall for it every year. But there is a world of difference between an intended joke and sheer buffoonery. This paper “goes to bed” late on Thursday so, as you can

Dear Editor,

imagine, it’s a little hectic in the final few hours. Today I had a breathless phone call from Sky News wanting reaction to a “plane crash” off the coast of Gran Canaria. Now since I was in the middle of writing about the 1977 crash (see page 16), I found it very strange. A couple of minutes later, and after some digging, it seemed like the nightmare was reality. There, in black and white, was a communiqué from 112, the official service of the emergency services in the Canary Islands. It confirmed that a plane had crashed into the water off the coast of GC. The major problem was, a plane hadn’t. Thankfully. It was just an error, although how you can mistake a plane for a boat is beyond me …. as is how this could have been announced OFFICIALLY. The subsequent denial came as a relief, but the “country bumpkins” tag will take some shifting. Believe me, there will be nothing better in print on Tuesday!

I sincerely hope you will publish the following story so that all foreign nationals can avoid the problem we have come across. We live in a short, very steep, dead-end road at the side of the water tank opposite the church in Los Menores. We bought our house 10 years ago, and paid an extra 10,000 euros for the legal, fully-documented, one car parking place, in a small triangle next to the road. The feeling was that the certainty of always having somewhere to park was worth the extra money. We are surrounded by different generations of the same Canarian family in the houses next to us. We did not begin the refurbishment work immediately; nor live there while the work was done. We made sure to cordon off our rough-ground parking place with cement blocks and a heavy metal chain. Although we are permanent residents on Tenerife, in year six, we had to go to the UK for six months and, on our return, the cement blocks and chain had vanished and there was asphalt on our parking place. We were told that our Canarian neighbours had gone to the Ayuntamiento and asked them to come and complete the road, by asphalting over our land so the family could park there. We talked to the Ayuntamiento for the next two years, trying to get them to put a permanent boundary line in between the public and private land, as we were told we were not allowed to do anything to the land until the problem was sorted out. But to no avail. We were advised by Trafico that there is a piece of Spanish legislation which says that they must do everything they can to allow us access to our land and to protect it (Art 965 Del Codigo Civil and Art. 75 inc 5 de La Ley Organica de Municipalidades). But they ignored the fact that this legislation did apply to them! Then, when we moved into the house two years ago, we spent all our time trying to stop the neighbours parking in our place. The problem was that the land showed as public land on the Ayuntamiento’s very old maps, and these maps can be updated only once every eight years, when the local plan is done. The boundary line could not be physically put in until the boundary was actually shown on the maps! And so it continued, until things got really nasty with the neighbours. I was physically pushed very hard, and the police were involved. Someone even painted the word “publico” on our land, but the police and the Ayuntamiento did not want to know. We decided to seek help from the Mayor, who is up for re-election next year. He ordered a report, and it took us six months to find out the result. Parking is a real problem on this small road. The Mayor could have made things a lot easier for us all if he had ordered the relocation of a telegraph pole and an electricity pole, which blocks parking for at least 2 more cars. We have now been told that he intends a compulsory purchase of the parking place as the road is too narrow. But as the road is the same narrow width all the way down, except for our small area, I do not believe he intends to demolish any houses to make the whole road wider. The only outcome of this action is to take our land off us, for a pittance, and allow our neighbours to park in the one car parking space it provides. There cannot be any other reason for the compulsory purchase than to take the car-parking space from a foreigner and give it to a Canarian, and it is all to be done in a fully legal way. Foreigners really don’t matter in Adeje, despite all the recent talk of protecting people’s rights, integration and equality. We would advise others to think very carefully before moving into the borough. Legalised highway robbery by those in power is still alive here! Caroline King

Carnival Queen’s regal welcome by the Mayor

THE Mayor of Santa Cruz has officially received the 2014 Carnival Queen and her court of bridesmaids!

Mayor Jose Manuel Bermúdez and Festival councillor Fernando Ballesteros, took the opportunity to congratulate the young Queen, Amanda Perdomo, who was presented with gifts which included jewellery from local designer Juan Gil. In addition to the Queen, her attendants Rocio Benitez, Yolanda Mendoza and Noemi Ant were also given mementos.

Water problem flows on and on

No kids jab KO!

Some 14,000 people, living in Las Dehesas, La Vera, Las Águilas, San Antonio-Esquilón, Las Arenas, San Fernando and Taoro-Malpaís, have been forced to collect water locally from large water tanks since November. They were installed because of the unacceptably high levels of fluoride and nitrates in the mains supply, which rendered the water unsuitable for human consumption. Restrictions were put into place soon afterwards.

In fact, some areas have recorded as many

THE Department for Health has still not received details of any project to improve water quality in a number of Tenerife municipalities in the North.

Alberto Talavera, Director of Tenerife’s Regional Health Department, said: “We cannot know whether the restriction on water consumption can be raised. “That’s because the administration has not addressed the regional issue with a specific project. But it has stated that it will be installing advanced filters shortly.” Talavera also said the Town Hall appeared to be taking steps towards solving the problem by ordering hi-tech filters for domestic supplies in the affected areas. He added: “We must now look forward and accept that a solution will come. We have had a big problem, but it is now on track towards a resolution, which will improve the quality of the water.”

THE anti-vaccination movement is hardly affecting children in the Canary Islands, says Amós García Rojas, Head of Epidemiology in the Public Health Department.

as 95% of kids receiving all their jabs, and Rojas believes this statistic is down the parents’ “historical memory”. One of the first things parents are encouraged to do in the Canaries is register their children with their local pediatricians, who recommend the vaccines. And their persuasive arguments for vaccination are echoed

in the high number of families who follow the recommended vaccine programme. Parents have the final word regarding children’s vaccination, but Rojas offers scientific evidence to supports the case for vaccination strongly. “They are among the safer drugs,” he says. Vaccination schedules differ slightly between regions, but generally

follow a calendar implemented by the Ministry of Health. The chickenpox vaccine is not offered to the young, but it is given to children around the age of 12 in most regions, except Navarra and Ceuta-Melilla. Rojas says that this is because of chickenpox complications usually present themselves in older patients, and offering the vaccine at 12 can help avoid such complications - but not the disease itself, which usually presents itself at an earlier age. The Spanish Medicines Agency has decided to withdraw the chickenpox vaccine from pharmacies, which, says Rojas, is “not particularly significant because chickenpox is generally a benign disease, with only a small percentage of cases becoming complicated.”

The average stay was 7.58 days and, by province, almost 60% (just over 2.9 million) were in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the remainder in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The figure for foreign visitors accounted for a 54.5% market share, up 11.8% on February 2013. Pervert priest locked away FORMER Catholic priest Francis Paul Cullen was jailed for 15 years this week for indecent assault and sexual abuse.

Cullen, who confessed to 21 cases of assault and abuse, spent 22 years in hiding in Los Cristianos before his extradition in 2012. The conviction related to a series of acts committed while Dublin-born Cullen was serving as a priest in Derbyshire and Nottingham, before fleeing to Tenerife in 1991. Some of the charges refer to Cullen’s abuse of four altar boys between the Fifties and Seventies. And in the Eighties, when Cullen moved from Mackworth to Buxton (both in Derbyshire), he abused two young girls whose parents were actively involved in parish activities there. In 1990, Cullen moved to Hyson Green in Nottingham, where he admitted abusing another altar boy. It was after this final case was reported, when police filed formal charges, that Cullen fled to Tenerife. Matt Goodwin, a detective constable from the Derbyshire Constabulary who investigated most of the accusations against Cullen, urged other possible victims to come forward He believed the huge

time span could indicate that more crimes were actually committed by the priest than were brought to court. Initially, “predatory” Cullen was going to deny the charges, but the 85-year-old changed his plea on the day his case was set to begin. At Derby Crown Court, Judge Jonathan Gosling told Cullen: “You took full advantage of your position, and the trust in which you were held, to satisfy your perverted lust.” He added: “It is impossible to reconcile the fact that you were administering the sacraments of the Catholic Church - baptism, confession, communion, confirmation - at the same time as you were indulging yourself with these children, some of whom served you on the altar at which you celebrated. “To say that you were a disgrace to your cloth understates your activity. This was gross hypocrisy. In a sentence, your entire life was a lie.” Meanwhile, in Nottingham, tribute was paid to the victims who came forward to give details of Cullen’s crimes, despite the length of time between the abuse and the eventual case. The victims in question were aged six and 16 at the time Cullen preyed upon them, and their courage in speaking out was applauded.

Shopkeepers hit by raiders plead for police protection SEVERAL traders in La Camella, plagued by robberies and violence in the past two months, are pleading for help.

The latest incident happened in the early hours of Monday, and the Valle San Lorenzo Enterprise Association has reported a distinct lack of police security in the area. There have been four

break-ins alone in a 100-metre stretch of the main road, and the latest involved three hoodies. They forced open the doors of a shop in a stolen Seat Ibiza and made off with a huge haul of clothing, valued by the owner at around 15,000 euros. The vehicle was taken from La Laguna and used in the smash-andgrab raid when their efforts to break the shop front’s window failed. They are believed to

have attached a rope from the car to the doors, and dragged them out of their frames to get inside. Brand-name clothing has been targeted in several of the break-ins so far reported, and the owners are concerned at the lack of Guardia Civil patrols. At times, says the Enterprise Association, traders, there is just one patrol car on duty for the municipalities of Arona, Adeje, Guia de Isora and Santiago

del Teide. And to compound the problem, it seems that the thieves are being set free even when caught. Only last month, two people were arrested for robbery with violence after attacking the owner of a petrol station as he tried to pay takings amounting to around 7,000 euros into a bank’s cash machine. The couple were released a day later, despite being identified by their victim.

Open ring-road stretch is such a blessing at Easter

THE newest stretch of the Island ring road - El Tanque to Icod - will open to traffic at Easter, six weeks after schedule.

“We have a few days’ grace left between signing off and opening to see if there are any problems, and correct them if they exist,” said Juan Ventura Medina, who added that when the road opens, on 15th April, it will be fully operational in both di-

rections. The most important element still missing from the plans is the bridge set to link the new road to Los Moriscos, in Buen Paso (Icod). To combat this, a large metal structure for pedestrians and vehicles is being installed this week. The Canary Islands Government will intervene in the controversial Buen Paso roundabout, which, according to the Cabildo, does not conform to traffic laws. Medina says that any change will depend on the route chosen from

the ring road to San Juan de la Rambla and Icod de los Vinos. José Luis Delgado, the Cabildo’s Roads’ Councillor, believes the current system will cause traffic delays at the roundabout towards Santa Cruz. “All the traffic from Icod and Isla Baja will have to give way to vehicles using the new road to El Tanque,” he said. But Medina argues that traffic simulation studies have shown no great delays, except, perhaps, at particularly busy times, and then only for a short while

- and in one direction only. The new road will halve the time taken for traffic to reach the centre of El Tanque from Buen Paso to 10 minutes. Last May, some 100 Icod residents gathered at the work site to plead with the Public Works Department to prioritise the work, because they felt even more poorly- connected than before the work began. Thanks to the metal structure, costing 400,000 euros, it will soon be passable again.

Remembering 1977… YESTERDAY (Thursday) marked the 37th anniversary of the deadliest accident in aviation history, when 583 people lost their lives after two Boeing 747s collided on a runway.

The accident at the Tenerife North airport led to sweeping changes of how communications were broadcast. The disaster came about through a catalogue of errors. A bomb explosion at Gran Canaria Airport, and the rumour of a second, caused flights to be diverted to Los Rodeos Airport. These included KLM

Flight 4805 and Pan Am 1736. Thick fog caused air traffic controllers to “park” airplanes on the runway. Both 747s were ready to take off, but, for some reason the controllers lost track of this fact. As the airport did not have ground radar, the only means for the controller to identify the location of each airplane was via voice transmis-

sions or line of sight. A misunderstanding led to the KLM flight being cleared for take-off, while the Pan Am flight was still stationary on the runway. The KLM then collided with the Pan Am as it was about to hit flight speed. The collision killed all 248 people on board KLM flight 4805 and 335 of 396 aboard the Pan Am.

Candy Crush has crashed! THE makers of digital game Candy Crush Saga saw nearly one billion dollars wiped from the company’s value after shares started trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

The stock price for King Digital Entertainment slumped by more than 12% within minutes, dropping its value by 850m dollars to around 6.25bn. King has become hugely profitable, thanks to the success of three games, including Candy Crush.

However, many investors have become wary of games’ firms with a limited range of products. They cite the demise of one-time market leader Zynga and its Farmville as an example to avoid. King has offices in Stockholm and London, and games’ studios in several European cities. Its website, through which players can buy game tokens, is domiciled in Malta. Although listed on the New York Stock Exchange, King Digital is a Dublin-registered company, set up last July as an accounting base for its European operations.

TV licence-fee dodgers’ get-out-of-jail prospect THE Labour Party has supported plans to give ministers powers to decriminalise non-payment of the BBC licence fee.

It gives the move cross-party political support, although a final decision on the issue is unlikely before summer 2015. Labour is believed to want piloting any move for a system of civil penalties before being implemented. The BBC has said a “proper review” of future options must be carried out. Currently, TV-owners can be sent to jail for refusing to pay the annual licence fee, which is used to fund BBC programmes and other output. A TV licence, which is required if a user watches or records live broadcasts on any device in the UK, costs £145.50 per year. Those who refuse to pay face a £1,000 fine and a criminal record,

H O L LY W O O D actress Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay’s Chris Martin are separating after a marriage lasting more than a decade.

The couple wed in 2003 and have two children - Apple, nine, and sevenyear-old Moses. And now, as she says in a statement on her website, they are to “uncouple”. Their break-up is said to have come as no surprise to many in the entertainment business, who have known that things have not been right between them for some time. Paltrow’s statement read: “It is with hearts full of sadness that we have decided to separate. “We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have

as well as a jail sentence if fines are not paid. BBC political correspondent Gary O’Donoghue has outlined a possible timeline: Step one: MPs voted on Tuesday to give the Government - in the Deregulation Bill - the power to decriminalise non-payment of the licence fee Step two: The bill still has several stages to complete, including getting through the House of Lords, so summer is the earliest likely date for the bill becoming law

Step three: If it gets through Parliament, the proposal says there should be a review, completed within a year, of how a civil penalty basically a fine - would work, before the change is made Step four: The best guess for the point at which ministers will decide whether to go through with decriminalisation is, at the earliest, the summer of 2015, after the General Election. Labour has signalled its likely support for the move. The difference be-

tween a criminal and civil offence is that one leads to a criminal punishment because it is an offence against all of society, while the other seeks to redress a wrong committed by one person against another. In practice, magistrates don’t jail people for criminal failure to pay a TV licence unless they have refused to pay a previous fine. That’s because prisons are a last resort - reserved for the worst offenders. However, they do get a criminal record. If someone commits a civil offence, there will be a finding against them in court which can include an order to make amends, including damages. Should a person fail to comply with that order, it is deemed an offence against the court, which can lead to jail. In English law, civil damages are more limited than myth would have it, so a future civil penalty could be no more than the price of a licence fee, plus legal costs. Party sources said: “We are strong supporters of

the BBC, but it is difficult to justify sending someone to prison for not paying the licence fee.” Conservative MP Andrew Bridgen, who has led calls for decriminalisation, welcomed Labour’s support, saying at least 150 backbenchers also supported the idea, in addition to ministers. “It was not a question of whether it would be decriminalised but how and when,” he said. Under the MP’s plan, ministers would be able to replace existing sanctions with “civil monetary penalties” under “statutory instrument”, which means no further Act of Parliament would be needed. This power could be used only during a twoyear period, starting from the completion of the proposed review. After that, it would require approval by both Houses of Parliament. A BBC spokeswoman said: “The BBC is content that this proposal balances a timely examination of this issue with a proper review of the options, while not tak-

ing any decisions prior to charter review.” The BBC’s royal charter, which sets out the corporation’s purposes and the way it is run, is reviewed every 10 years. The current one runs until the end of 2016. Earlier this month James Purnell, the corporation’s strategy director, warned that BBC channels could close if non-payment of the licence fee were decriminalised. He said it would be a “huge risk”, which would increase nonpayment and cost the BBC £200m a year in lost licence-fee revenue. In fact, the BBC maintains that the CBBC, CBeebies and BBC Four channels could close if licence-fee evasion increases. With TV licensing cases accounting for 180,000 or more than one in 10 criminal prosecutions in 2012 - ministers argue that decriminalisation could ease pressure on the court system. Of those prosecuted in 2012, about 155,000 people were convicted and fined for non-payment

Uncoupled: Paltrow and Martin to split as marriage goes Cold! been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much, we will remain separate. “We are, however, and always will be, a family, and in many ways we are closer than we have ever been. “We are parents first and foremost, to two incredibly wonderful children, and we ask for their and our space and privacy to be respected at this difficult time. “We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that, as we consciously uncouple and co-parent, we will be able to continue in the same manner.” At one point, the website crashed because

of the number of people visiting to read the statement. Martin, 37, met Oscarwinner Paltrow shortly after the death of her father in late 2002, and they married just over a year later. Coldplay’s Fix You is one of a number of tracks Martin is said to have penned about the actress. Paltrow’s recent career has included roles in the Iron Man franchise and the TV series Glee. However, she has not hit the heights of her early career, when she won the Best Actress Oscar for Shakespeare In Love in 1999. The LA-born actress was once engaged to Brad Pitt, her co-star in serial-killer film Seven.

She also had a relationship with actor Ben Affleck. Martin, lead singer with Coldplay, will kickstart his career again in May when the band release their sixth album, Ghost Stories. Paltrow gave a glimpse into the couple’s domestic life last year after being named the most beautiful woman in the world by People magazine, “Around the house, I’m in jeans and a T-shirt,” she said. “I don’t really wear make-up –that’s what they’re used to. “If I’ve gotten fully dressed up, he’ll be like, ‘Oh, wow! You’re Gwyneth Paltrow’ because he’s used to seeing me in baggy shorts and frizzy hair.”

What a difference a year makes to me

By Joe Ferguson

I’m 50 next year! My birthday is on Monday (31st Mar) and I will turn 49 years old.

It’s a big deal to those who are hitting that half-century mark, and quite a few are dreading it. As for me, though, it’s really no big deal. I know a lot of the older generation who are in their 70s - as a matter of fact, my Dad is in his 80s - and they are all having a whale of a time. So for me, and I hate to quote the over-used term, it really is only a number. It seems the modern thing now to say that 50 is the new 40, but I give people a look of distain when they say it to me. I seriously prefer not to be patronised by those who obviously can’t count! Wouldn’t it be great if shopping had this new, mathematical

equation? Imagine being told: “That’ll be 50 euros, please.” You could always reply: “Here’s 40, you know what they say.” My outlook today is no different from what it was at any age in my life. Just to have fun is all I want to do. Obviously, there are a few things I can’t do now that I’m getting on in life. Like running. I was never a big fan of the running, even when younger. I never did and never will see the point in running - unless you’re a bank robber! But unfortunately,

that seems to be all my three-year-old son wants to do at the minute. Even now, as non-smoker, it kills me to run six feet. So this second lease of life I’m supposed to have by giving up cigarettes is a ridiculous statement, too. The cracking bones is also something you have to contend with. I wish I could remember how many times I hear a crack every time I move, but I end up losing track. No matter what it is, hand, arm, leg, feet etc - you name it and

it’ll crack. Weird body hair. Not the usual symptoms. We all go grey as we get older, I am going completely white. If I don’t shave for a few days, I could easily pass as Father Christmas. Even my eyebrows have more white than dark now. Thankfully, a box of Just For Men can take care of that. I’m not even talking about the hair that grows thickly in ears, which gives the appearance of gluing two Shredded Wheat to the side of your face. I’m talking about the weird hair that sprouts from places you didn’t think possible. And it’s sharp! I can only explain that it is pin-like sharp to the touch. I could get an itch on my neck, try to take care of it and a loud “ouch” is screamed out as I prick myself with one of these mutant hairs. And without going into detail, they are slowly growing in a place that

no man ever wishes to have anything sharp near! The “uhhhhhhhh” noise as you get up from the couch, and again as you sit down, is something I just don’t understand? It’s like a face tick over which you have no control. It’s in my mind that I’m doing it and it has to stop. But no matter what I tell my brain as soon as I move, the sound of “uhhhhhhhh” echoes around the room. Only those who have been through this know what I’m on about. And it comes to us all, I can assure you. If you’re in your 20s, keep this with you at all times. And if I’m still around when you are in the 40s, I will say I told you so. My sister came out with a cracking sentence just this week. “What do you buy a 50-year-old man for his birthday?” Erm, let me think. “The same thing you would buy any man for his birthday?”

I’m sure she will get me something useful for Monday, when I turn 49, so it’s true that a year will make a difference. But in the minds of others only. No doubt, the “old man” jokes will be in abundance, and, as an old man, I fully expect and will take them with humour. Intended or not. So as you can see, I’m already looking on that birthday just as I would any other … with nothing but a pinch of salt. Which is another thing you have to stay away from! Of course, it can affect some people mentally, but have a few drinks and get over it. But one thing without doubt, guaranteed to happen over the years - and there’s no getting away from it - is the fact that grumpiness does indeed happen to the older man. Does the grumpy old man really exist? You just read my column!

The cookery competition continues its tenth series with the first quarter-final, and the four talented heat winners have no time to rest on their laurels as they fight for their place in the competition. First, they must prove their mettle in the fiendishly difficult palate and skills test. Chef John Torode cooks his jungle curry with coconut and lime rice, a dish made up of 18 different spices and herbs. Without seeing him prepare it, the amateurs are given just a few minutes to taste this dish before being asked to recreate it without a recipe, selecting from ingredients that may or may not belong in the dish. For their second challenge, the four must go headto-head to cook their own show-stopping dish for John and Gregg, plus feared food critic William Sitwell, who tells them exactly what he thinks of their food. At the end of this quarter-final, only the best amateurs will go through to the next round and take another step closer to being crowned MasterChef champion 2014.

Border Country - The Story Of Britain’s Lost Middleland BBC2, 20.00 Two thousand years ago, the Romans divided Britain with a wall, splitting communities in two. In this series, historian and diplomat Rory Stewart explores the history of the ancient land that lies beneath that border, stamped out by centuries of English and Scottish Nationalism – he calls it Britain’s lost ‘Middleland’. In the year of a referendum for Scottish Independence, which could make the border an international state boundary once more, this two-part series explores the extraordinary landscape, oral history, and archaeology of this border country. Drawing on his experiences of life in border areas of Iraq and Afghanistan, Rory Stewart uncovers the lost history of this familiar frontier in a beautiful landscape and reminds us of the story of the ancient British Middleland. As an historian and MP, Rory Stewart believes the building of Hadrian’s Wall was the single most important event in Britain’s history. In Border Country – The Story Of Britain’s Lost Middleland, Rory meets experts and local people; explores the impact of Rome’s occupation and departure; and tells the story of how the powerful new kingdom of Northumbria was born in Britain’s lost Middleland. Rory meets Cumbrian sheep-farmer Willy Tyson, who counts his sheep using a form of the ancient Celtic language spoken here in pre-Roman times, and well as archaeologists Miles Russell and Andy Birley, who help him explore how the Roman army divided Britain with Hadrian’s Wall and Rory shows how difficult it would have been to storm the Roman defences. Taking to the air with archaeologist David Wooliscroft, Rory gets a bird’s-eye view of the remains of the vast Roman fortifications. Rory believes that the British experience in Afghanistan can help us understand the immense challenge the Roman army faced. He meets Major Martin Headley MBE, who was based at a forward operating base in Helmand, Afghanistan in 2009, to find out what life was like for a soldier fighting in a completely alien land. When Rome left Britain at the beginning of the 5th century, warlords and gangsters fought over what remained. Rory meets Dr Tim Clarkson, who has tried to build a picture of the men who ruled the Middleland at this time by studying the poetry of ancient bards. Within 300 years of the Roman departure, the Middleland was transformed into a powerful Christian kingdom. He meets modern-day Benedictine monk Brother Bede of Pluscarden Monastery in the county of Moray, and Professor Rosemary Cramp to understand the remarkable transformation of the Middleland into the kingdom of Northumbria – one of the greatest Christian civilizations in medieval Europe.

Endeavour ITV1, 20.00

May 1966. DC Endeavour Morse returns to Oxford City Police after a four-month absence from duty. Reunited with DI Fred Thursday, still reeling from the final moments of Series 1, the young detective’s involuntary furlough has left him wounded - in mind, more than body. Another dazzlingly complex mystery is set in motion during a Broad Street parade, celebrating the might of Britain’s military accomplishments. The festivities, soured by a rash student stunt, are thrown into sharp relief when a John Doe plummets to his death from a nearby council building. A clutch of business cards bearing multiple identities suggest the death was more than just a routine suicide. Endeavour flexes his gumshoe muscles to uncover the corpse’s identity - a solitary pursuit that builds to a trip to London with troubling consequences. Whilst a concerned Thursday looks on, the fractured pieces of the kaleidoscope mirror the young detective’s state of mind, as he pulls two seemingly unrelated cases into the fray - an anguished father searching for a missing daughter, and a smash-and-grab robbery of medieval artifacts at Oxford’s Beaufort College.

Nigel Farage: Who are You? Channel 4, 19:30

Filmed over six months, controversial filmmaker Martin Durkin meets controversial UKIP leader and political whirlwind Nigel Farage. According to some commentators Farage will lead UKIP to victory at the European elections in a few weeks’ time; and that he may even stop the Conservatives from winning the general election next year. A few years ago, no one had heard of Nigel Farage, but now he’s a major force in British politics. But who is Nigel Farage? Durkin finds out on a journey full of incident: drink in hand, Nigel guides viewers through his favourite watering holes in the City, and he sneaks the film crew into the Euro Parliament, only to be swiftly ejected. From battling with protestors to keeping UKIP MEPs in line, Durkin gets to know the man who is turning British politics upside down.

The Widower ITV1, 21.00

Malcolm (Reece Shearsmith) and Simone’s (Archie Panjabi) relationship is moving at a rapid pace. They are engaged and undergoing IVF treatment for a child. Malcolm is now treasurer of an angling club, but is secretly embezzling funds. When this is reported to DS Charlie Henry (John Hannah), he raids their home and finds stolen laptops and an unlicensed firearm. Malcolm is pulled in for questioning, but Charlie’s frustrations continue to grow when legal technicalities result in Malcolm being cleared of the embezzlement, theft and firearms offences. Charlie soon discovers Malcolm and Simone are planning a transatlantic trip, and fears Malcolm could use this to kill Simone. During his investigation Charlie learns Malcolm was suspected of a recent fire. This information helps him to gain permission to serve Simone with an Osman Letter a legal document that warns her of the danger he poses. When Simone is told by Charlie that Malcolm is already married, has a son and is not suffering from leukaemia, she decides to end their relationship. A year later, new forensic evidence links Malcolm to Claire’s murder and he is finally arrested for the crime. There’s a further shock in store when Simone discovers Malcolm tampered with the life jacket she was going to use on their sailing trip – a lucky escape.

UEFA Champions League Live Manchester United v Bayern Munich

ITV1, 19.30 Manchester United host Bayern Munich in their Champions League quarter finals first leg. Matt Smith fronts the best of the night’s action; including highlights of the other game taking place - an all Spanish affair between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

UEFA Champions League - Extra Time ITV1, 22:35 Highlights of the first legs of tonight’s two quarter-final matches, as eight teams remain to compete for a place in next month’s final.

George Michael introduces his unique live solo performance at the historic Palais Garnier Opera House in Paris, recorded in 2012 for his live album Symphonica. He was the first contemporary artist ever to perform there. The film brings together a compilation of live stage performances interspersed with behind the scenes footage and insights featuring George, his orchestra and the legendary producer Phil Ramone, shortly before his death in 2013. In between performances of his classic songs, George describes the stories behind some of his favourite tracks, and we see black and white studio footage of conversations with Ramone, along with rehearsals with the Symphonica orchestra and George’s backing singers. Before the end, George pays a moving tribute to the late Ramone, whom he describes as the most accomplished producer of the 20th century.

George McGavin with a Japanese macaque We humans are part of an extraordinary family. We’ve got hundreds of bizarre and colourful relatives who lead dramatic lives all over the globe. Yet most of us know almost nothing about them. Monkey Planet is about much more than just monkeys – it’s about the whole primate family, including strange lemurs, acrobatic monkeys, and the enigmatic apes. Presented by zoologist Dr George McGavin, this series explores the amazing world of primates and reveals just what makes our animal family so special. From the snowy mountains of Japan to the blistering, windswept savannah of South Africa, throughout the series we uncover the secrets of the primate family success: ingenious survival tactics and extraordinary physical adaptations; fascinating family lives that mirror ours in so many ways; and highly intelligent, flexible minds that show that the smartest primates are more like us than you’d ever think possible. Our primate family is incredibly varied and surprising. From the ninja tarsier, a spring-loaded ambush predator the size of a tennis ball, to the magnificent herds of geladas in the mountains of Ethiopia, primates have adapted to environments across the planet. In episode one, Meet The Family, presenter Dr George McGavin gets up close and personal with Siswi, an orang-utan who uses soap to improve her personal hygiene. He strips off to experience the numbing cold of the Japanese Alps, and heads 100 metres underground to a secluded monkey dormitory. Then there are baboons with a hunger for flamingo flesh; macaques with criminal minds; fluorescent mandrills who wear war-paint to do battle; and Ardry, a real life gremlin who ‘sees’ the unseeable with her ‘extra-terrestrial’ fingers.

Kim Philby - His Most Intimate Betrayal BBC2, 21.00

Kim Philby is the most famous double agent in history. But a quarter of a century after his death, he has become a caricature, the gentleman master spy. The real Kim Philby was a man of contradictions. He was charming and courteous, but he was also a fanatic and a ruthless killer, who deceived everyone around him. In this two-part series, bestselling author Ben Macintyre explores the man behind the myth. He argues that the key to Philby’s success, and his survival, lay in his friendship with a man that history has largely forgotten - Nicholas Elliott. Elliott was Philby’s colleague in MI6 who befriended him, defended him, and unwittingly supplied him with secrets... until he discovered the truth. Ben Macintyre tells this extraordinary story of espionage, murder and intimate betrayal and visits the locations where the action took place: London, Istanbul, Washington DC, Beirut and Moscow. This is the remarkable tale of two friends and two spies, each working on opposite sides in the Cold War.

The cameras also monitor the lunchtime eating behaviour of the staff of a busy sales agency. And in Secret Science, food psychologist Dr Christy Ferguson puts her best foot forward in a salsa class, where dancers who’ve worked up an appetite become the unwitting guinea pigs, to test the theory that if we take our time consuming our food we’re possibly less likely to overeat.

15,000 Kids and Counting Channel 4, 21:00 Child protection levels in Britain are at a record high. On average, one child is taken into care inBritain every 20 minutes. Over 15,000 children were waiting to be adopted last year: twice as many as five years ago. With unparalleled access to the entire adoption process, this three-part documentary series follows social workers, foster carers, birth parents and adopters as heart-wrenchingly difficult decisions are made about the future of some of Britain’s most vulnerable children. The process begins with the most difficult decision of all: the decision to remove a child from their birth family. This episode follows the social workers whose job it is to take children away from their parents and recommend whether they should ever return; and parents who are desperately fighting to keep their children.

Series in which Adrian Edmondson explores Britain’s maritime past and its influence today. Episode four finds Ade in England’s north-west. In the early 19th century, 40 per cent of the world’s trade passed through Liverpool, and its port was the busiest and most advanced on Earth. Ade begins his journey at Eastham, where the Manchester Ship Canal meets the River Mersey. The canal was a feat of engineering which transformed previously landlocked Manchester into the third busiest port in Britain. He meets three generations of a family who work on the tugboats and joins them as they haul a 3,000ton vessel along the waterway. Back in Liverpool, Ade boards a three-masted topsail schooner, the Kathleen and May, a type which used to ply the Atlantic and learns about sea shanties from Scouser Hughie Jones. Off the north-west coast, massive wind farms are under construction and Ade visits one of the largest in the world, Gwynt Y Mor.

Jockey School Channel 4, 22:00

In the build-up to the Grand National on Channel 4 this Saturday, this documentary visits the toughest jockey school in Britain. Three teenagers with troubled backgrounds each want to make it as jockeys. They’re not from the ranks of Champagnedrinking, hat-wearing spectators normally associated with race days. They aren’t world-renowned sportsmen on horseback, dedicated to what they do and in peak physical condition. They’re fighters, travellers and troublesome teens, who have not had the best start in life. But they’re passionate about horses, and this could be their way to a better future.

Entertainment

By Jamie Droo

WHEN singers worked in a venue some time ago, they would be required to provide sheet music for their songs.

You could get away with just keyboard parts usually, as most clubs employed the bare minimum of musicians. Normally, a keyboard player and a drummer would be resident. However, eight out of 10 drummers could play but not read music, so it was a waste of money to pay for sheet music that would hardly ever be used. Then came the “selfcontained” age. As artistes started to use backing tracks in the late Eighties, a lot of musicians in clubs were being put out of work. The cassette tape took over from musicians and live play. Technology quickly became a factor in a singer’s life and faster access was the demand. The tape was overtaken first by DAT and then by Minidisc. The latter provided entertainers immediate access to their tracks, but it was limited to 74 minutes of recording time. Nowadays, though, even the minidisc seems obsolete and artistes have a plethora of choices as to how to deliver their sounds. Whether it be via a mobile phone, iPod or iPad, or sometimes a laptop, technology has

How the face of the game has changed!

given the artiste the capability of versatility. Why take just 14 songs with you to perform a 45-minute set when a small SD card in one of the mentioned devices can carry so much more. Yet there are a few artistes on the Island still performing exactly the same set as they did 10 years ago. True, the saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” is a wise phrase, but giving yourself a little variety on stage is surely going to stop the artiste going stale. New artistes arriving from the UK seem to be changing up their act regularly. Just subtle changes, like a couple of songs here and there, or being the first to learn new songs. Helena Campbell, who uses technology to the full, keeps a varied and changing playlist. Maybe this has some bearing on why she holds the Best Female Vocalist Award from the 2013 TEAs. Two weeks ago, I passed a venue where Helena was working and she was just introducing a new song she had learned that afternoon. It was Pitbull & Ke$ha’a Timber, a song which had entered the UK charts just the week before. There are many more I could mention who do exactly the same. But in doing that, I might be guilty of highlighting those who don’t in a negative way, because it’s not a bad thing to be doing the same thing

every night. But the world’s best athletes do not train in the same way for every competition. They change their style to suit how they compete with others and, of late, there has been some talented “others” arriving on the Island to work. This circuit is again becoming a picking ground for talented, fresh acts who have had to compete on the

UK circuit, where it is a must to keep your act varied. Some UK venues would complain if you returned within six months featuring the same show. This year, I believe there is more talent than ever over here as the Tenerife stable continues to grow. The summer is almost here, the streets and promenades are

getting busier and the tourists seem a lot happier and want to join in. There’s more dancing, laughing and, most importantly, drinking and spending. Tenerife has provided entertainers with an easy, laid-back lifestyle for a long time. Also, It was once known as a place saturated with top-class entertainers and I feel that this is the year Tenerife’s enter-

tainment scene is going to kick butt again!. It’s time to get your game face on! Next week, I will be interviewing Paul Fitzpatrick from The Dubliner band, who is moving to the UK with his family in May after 20 years’ service. A full review of the interview and links to the recording will appear in next week’s Canarian Weekly.

Elegance - with a touch of class JUST when you thought you’d heard about all the new musical collaborations taking place within the Tenerife circuit, another one pops up!

Two talented guys who have been working together solely in Leonardos, have now taken to the circuit. Elegance, comprising DJ/producer Leon Cormack and Dutch vocalist Andy Stephan, have been singing together for some time now at Leon’s Magic Lounge bar residency. This is a blessing to our beloved circuit, where vocal harmonics seem to be separating the men from the boys. These two have an ability that truly is

second to none. There are plenty of singers who can harmonise,

but few who can harmonise within the high echelons of falsetto.

They tend to stick to popular chart hits of the last five years, with a sprinkling of older songs. And what makes them different are the acoustic intros to songs from Leon on the piano. First, you relate to an easily-recognisable melody, and then comes the vocals from both of them, confirming the song to the audience before the big drop as it takes hold in all its glory. It’s a great way of hooking the audience in. As a result, the dance floor filled quickly and stayed that way for the full show. Elegance are brilliant for anyone wanting a vibrant, modern show with a unique twist involving the acoustic dynamics of the piano and vocal acrobatics of Andy and Leon.

Heat 4: Tenerife Loves Karaoke at Our Place

Robyn’s bobbing along nicely THE TLK tour bus trundled into Silencio this week for the fourth heat and set up residence at Our Place.

The afternoon was a lot of fun with Oasis Fm’s Jamie & The Droo Crew broadcasting live from 3pm till 6pm, and performances from Luke & Ollie as Phenomenon between 6-8pm. All this was before the competition had even started. Well, it was a special day after all. Bar owner Sharon was celebrating her birthday, too, so it was busy from the word go. By the time registration for TLK began at 9pm, Our Place was buzzing with anticipation. This venue is among the handful of bars which book this event every year. And it is so good that in turn, the bar receives magnificent support from the local residents of Silencio. Ten singers registered

to sing in the heat, which was compered by the now-resident TLK host Jamie Droo, from Oasis Fm. The judging panel comprised two residents, John Zammit and Michelle Phillips,

and two people representing the bar - Paul and Ann. And when asked what they do for a living, both answered, “absolutely nothing”, which received knowing nods and chuckles from eve-

ryone. There was a fine mix of singers - some entrants from previous year’s heats and others performing for the first time. After round 1, judge Zammit was overheard saying that it was the

THEY say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well, the One Direction lads must be smiling at the rise of 5 Seconds Of Summer, even if the Aussie foursome are not a like-for-like match.

The Sydney lads didn’t have a TV talent show to launch them and, unlike 1D, they are a music band rather than a boyband. But after supporting 1D on a number of gigs, there is no doubt they are on the coat-tails and sharing fans. They have been going barely two years, yet they made their mark right from the off.

Their You Tube cover of Chris Brown’s Next To You brought them to the record companies’ attention and they haven’t looked back. Their 2012 success Down Under led them to supporting One Direction on their world tour last year. The Sydney lads used the time to polish their act and write

some killer, teenfriendly tunes. Their UK debut, She Looks So Perfect, is nailed on for No.1 this week after some wellreceived shows at the O2 in London last month. Michael, Luke, Calum and Ashton are wellplaced to break hearts in 2014 - and be around for longer than 5 seconds!

off were Tracey Barry, Sammy Stitt and eventual winner Robyn Nuyens, who sang Shakira’s Underneath Your Clothes and You’ve Got The Love, by Florence and The Machine. The next heat is tonight (Friday) at The Pub in Torviscas. Don’t forget to tune in to Oasis Fm from 3pm as Jamie & The Droo Crew will be broadcasting live.

Garden

28th March 2014 - 3rd April 2014

By Margaret Tully I WAS looking through photos of plants I have taken over the last few years and I came across a picture of the Red Pineapple (Ananas bracteatus).

It was taken at the Jardin de Aclimatacion de la Orotava in Puerto de la Cruz (also known known as the Botanical Garden) - a wondrous place to visit if you like plants. It is set in over seven acres and houses plants from tropical and exotic parts of the world. The edible Red Pineapple is native to South America, and I wondered whether it was possible to grow the more common pineapple, Ananas comosus, here in the Canaries. I struck lucky and found the plant in my local garden centre. It was reasonably priced at under six euros, so I thought it was worth a try. Its final position, after I had tried a few spots, is growing in a pot. I made a soil mix of 80% orchid compost (mainly bark) and 20% multi-purpose compost. And the pot is sitting in my sheltered plant room, on a bed of orchid compost. Pineapples belong to the Bromeliad family, which includes some beautiful ornamental plants with amazing coloured tops (flowers) and an array of coloured foli-

It will make you pine...

age. Their root system is very shallow and they like dry soil, which doesn’t create a waterlogged, compacted environment for them to thrive. They like to be watered from above, straight on to their foliage as this the best way for them to store and feed on nutrients. Apparently, they are fairly easy to grow here, but they obviously take a long time - the plant has to reach a fair size before it flowers and then produces its fruit.

In Britain’s Victorian times, exotic pineapple plants were brought over and grown in speciallybuilt greenhouses. It was a symbol of wealth to have this unusual fruit grace the dinner table. And. believe it or not, they were often rented out to people who didn’t have their own pineapples! They were for show only, though, as they had to be returned to their owner intact. It was a symbol to welcome someone into your home, because so-

cialising in this manner was the only way to meet new people in this era. And stone-carved pineapples often stood on either side of the gate pillars of grand houses. The other way to get your own pineapple plant is to buy a fresh one and cut the top off, keeping the leaves intact. I recently bought a beautiful fresh pineapple and have placed the base of the leaf top into water, in a sunny window. Hopefully, I’ll soon see roots and I will then pot it up in the same way as the garden-centre pineapple. The fresh pineapple I bought had a label attached to it, stating its origin, and I was more than pleased to see “El Hierro” on it! I looked up the cooperative that produc-

es them, Co-operativa Frontera, and it turns out that in 2003, these growers on the Canaries’ smallest island had to fight to stop imports of pineapples, which were not sanitised properly and could have been carrying pests and diseases. Fortunately, the Cooperativa won their case and are now a leading, natural-pineapple producer. In 2013, members teamed up with La Palma to process the pineapple and distribute it, so it is a genuine Canary Island success story. The fresh pineapple is so tasty and is full of vitamin C, although a little acidic, and is perfectly good for you. After all, it should be a treat … a little exotic pleasure! They are expensive, but, in my mind, worth every

penny, especially the Canary Island variety: no travelling thousands of miles, no excessive preservation required - and picked when ripe and not a minute earlier. Unfortunately, in other parts of the world, the pineapple producers have been the subject of complaints regarding the employees’ poor working environments. As pineapples are grown on an industrial scale, high levels of pesticides are used and are said to affect workers’ health and contaminate local water. So, why not have a crack at growing a pineapple or another bromeliad? You’ll be surprised at how many varieties there are - and collectors are said to become addicted to them, much like orchid collectors.

SOW IT… GROW IT… TASTE IT Ingredients For the pastry *6oz plain flour *2-3oz caster sugar *3oz cold butter *Water *1 egg For the filling *Shredded flesh of fresh pineapple *Tin of coconut milk *3 eggs *2-3oz caster sugar Method (heat oven to 180ºC)

Pina Colada Tart (non-alcoholic) For the pastry *Put flour and sugar into bowl *Chop up butter into cubes, add to flour *With thumb and finger, rub butter into flour and sugar mix, until crumbly *Add whisked egg and bring mixture together *Add a little water if

needed. *Flour a kitchen surface. *Knead dough lightly, wrap in cling film and chill in fridge for 30 mins *Take out after being chilled and roll out and use to line pie or flan dish *Prick lightly and lay

piece of baking parchment over the top and place baking beads or dried beans on to the paper to act as a weight, which will prevent pastry from rising at all (bake blind) *Once removed and cooled it’s time to fill tart.

For the filling *Lay out shredded pineapple (to shred, simply take a fork through the fruit or use your fingers) on to the pastry. *Whisk the three eggs and add some of the coconut milk (don’t make too much mixture) *Add the sugar, give

mixture a final whisk and add to the tart, being careful not move the pineapple about too much (you want fruit in all the portions) *Bake in oven for 25-35 minutes until the “custard” is set *Take out of oven and let cool. *Chill in fridge and then serve with cream or icecream Mmmmm, delicious!

Plain or not, life is still a big drag for smokers

By Val Sainsbury UNBRANDED cigarettes, already on sale in Australia, are packaged that way in the hope of preventing people from smoking.

But new research Down Under reveals that people don’t appear to be bothered about what they’re puffing on, and that the plain packets are merely a smokescreen. In fact, industry data there warns that it could even lead to a rise in the sale of cigarettes because smokers, and potential smokers, will no longer care about buying expensive brands. The amount of tobacco delivered to retailers has actually risen since the move to plain packs was introduced in 2012. Health campaigners have been vying globally for the plain packages, saying the move will protect children and potential new smok-

ers, who are attracted to branded packaging. The thinking is that potential smokers are less likely to buy packs of cigarettes if they are unbranded. The data comes as leaders of the industry announced that they intend to present an

independent report to ministers, calling for the banning of branded cigarette packs to be reviewed. Philip Morris International, manufacturers of Marlboro cigarettes, released data from Australia which suggests that they have had a

rise in deliveries of tobacco for the first time in five years. Their data suggests that unbranded cigarette packets have reversed the downward trend of falling numbers buying cigarettes, and that people may, potentially, be buying more.

It says that in 2013, after a year of unbranded packaging, Australian tobacco firms enjoyed a 0.3% rise in cigarette sales after four years of declining figures, while the sales of loose tobacco used for roll-ups increased 3.4%. Health campaign-

ers and anti-smoking groups previously said they were concerned about this potential result from instituting unbranded packaging. However, they also say a ban on branded packaging is not enough, and that harsher taxes to increase the price of cigarettes should also be instituted to dissuade people even more. The proposal for plain packs in the UK was intended to reduce the amount of children and teenagers who would ordinarily be drawn to smoking because of branded packaging, which can make a fag packet seem more attractive. Parliament has been toying with the possibility of a UK ban, and last November, ministers ordered an independent review of branded packaging to find out whether the ban would be effective. However, the issue appears to be under consideration still, and no date has been given as to when a ban might be introduced in Britain.

Alzheimer’s could be checked years earlier A NEW detection test for Alzheimer’s, which can diagnose the presence of the disease decades before symptoms appear, could be available in three years.

At least 820,000 people in the UK suffer from dementia, more than half of whom also have Alzheimer’s. Early diagnosis would give what few available treatments there are a better chance of working before extensive brain damage and dementia set in fully. The test analyses spi-

nal fluid to detect the presence of minuscule, misfolded protein fragments called amyloidbeta oligomers, which are thought to be the main cause of Alzheimer’s disease. Dr Claudio Soto, from Houston’s University of Texas Medical School, who carried out the research, said: “This is the

key molecule and could be the best, most reliable way to make an early diagnosis. “That’s been the biggest problem in the field – you can’t identify patients until they are already sick. Those amyloid-beta oligomers may be circulating in the body years, if not decades, before cognitive symptoms arise.” Alzheimer’s disease is incurable, but experts believe the key to treating it, and even preventing its onset, lies in early detection. In the study, published in the Cell Press journal Cell Reports, the researchers showed that their test can detect amyloid-beta oligomers at minute concentrations. Dr Soto is now hoping to adapt the technology for use with easyto-take blood or urine samples, rather than by taking spinal fluid. He hopes that a test could

be on the market in as little as three years. But Dr Simon Ridley, head of research at Alzheimer’s Research UK, issued a caution, saying: “It’s too early to tell how accurate this method might be, or whether it

can distinguish people with the disease from healthy people. “We need to see further research in much larger groups of people before we can know whether this approach will be successful.”

LIKE YOU JUST STEPPED OUT OF THE SALON?

FRESH APPROACH TO THOSE TOP OUTFITS

By Carl from Robot

By Ruth Benson

“I CAN’T be bothered”, or “It’s important to me” - which hair-care category do you fit into?

WA R D R O B I N G is becoming more popular in the UK, according to the Independent.

Unfortunately, I cannot make up your minds for you, but it’s as simple as ABC: you either find your hair important to you and your image, or it’s just a burden that needs dealing with. Either way, we stylists are here to listen and guide you in the right direction, be it something quick and easy to style or more complicated. I often hear clients say in the salon that they don’t want the fuss of looking after or maintaining a style. That’s fine if it’s what makes them happy. On the other hand, however, some women say their hair is the most important thing about their image. and they require a totally different look. But hair is a drag for some, and it is beyond them to keep up with the roots or a regular cut. Others relish the thought of a salon visit and love to experiment with colour and styles. There’s no law to say that whichever category you fit into is wrong or right - it’s all about choice. So if you don’t have time to style your hair and want something quick and easy to maintain, don’t go for too many layers in your cut.

For those of you who have not heard the term, it is “the act of buying, wearing and then returning an item of clothing”. It has become so popular that a survey conducted by vouchers. co.uk state that one in 6

This can make styling more difficult, and the shape will not fall into place as much as a onelength or graduated look. Soft, feminine crops are best for you if it’s easiness you want ... finger-dried shapes that just fall back into place and look good, however your hair blows. On the other hand, if you enjoy styling your hair and don’t get tired of salon visits, the world’s your oyster. I love giving clients a make-over, but this can only be done if you’re willing to keep up the work at home. There’s nothing worse than a fabulous “salon look” which appears great as you walk out. But what you going to do with it the next day?

Hair, as Vidal Sassoon, said, “should be cut like cloth”, meaning as it falls. If hair is going to look its best, it should fall back into the cut and look great, even as it gets blown about. Seeing hair “forced” into a blow dry is my pet hate because it looks dated and false. If it’s going to look its best, it has to be cut as the hair grows. If you are spending hours styling your hair, it may not be the best cut for you. So ask your stylist to recommend a cut that suits not only you but your hair as well. It’s for you to decide: do you go with niceand-easy, or do you really want to make a hair statement?

41 CW

has done it at least once and one in 10 on a regular occurrence. The most common reason for shoppers is getting something to be worn on a one-off occasion such as a wedding, christening or interview. The most worrying part of the survey is how calculated the purchasing has become, with people checking if the labels have been pinned in so they can be easily taken on and off. And one in 20 of those surveyed admitted to spraying with air-freshener before returning. It is becoming more of a problem in America, and stores such as Bloomingdales have

tried to tackle the problem by attaching a black tag to the front of every item, which has to remain in place for those wanting to return. Obviously, retailers are worried as this becomes more common. The Guardian’s Daisy Buchanan believes there is a solution that will benefit everyone. Daisy suggests outfits being rented. This way, the outfit you need for that one-off occasion will not be worn once and forgotten about, and you don’t need to pay a fortune for it. There are many upsides to this, as mentioned: just paying a rental fee would keep more money in your pocket. Also, when you return it, you don’t have to make any excuses or try to hide the fact that it has been worn … or the look of guilt on your face! We can see why Wardrobing is becoming popular with the demand to be fashionable, and to be seen in something new while people are struggling financially. But whether you think it is acceptable or not, we all lose out. It is estimated in the US that it cost the industry over 8.8 billion dollars last year. And 65% of retailers had experienced the phenomenon, according to CNBC. So how will we suffer? Well, they have to recuperate their losses and they are doing so by increasing the price of the clothing. If you have ever done Wardrobing, or plan to do it, just make sure that, when showing off your new outfit, the label isn’t sticking out the back.

Food Review

28th March 2014 - 3rd April 2014

That’s what I call Magic! THIS week, we were treated to something brandnew to the South of Tenerife: a lunchtime food feast at the legendary Magic Lounge Café.

“Food at Magic?” I hear you ask. Yes, you read correct! And what an amazing surprise it was. As opposed to the

quality Music Bar/Club it is known as in the evenings, Magic is totally transformed during the daylight hours into a stylish, but relaxed, chill-out cafe. We sat on the raised, glass-fronted terrace, and begun our lunch with a delicious selection of Smoothies and Juices. We went for the Berry irresistible Smoothie, with mixed berries & banana, and the Heart-Beet Juice,

made with Beetroot, ginger and apple juice. I was a bit sceptical at first as to how this would taste, but it was genuinely delicious. (and, apparently also excellent for circulation and detoxing the blood) But don’t worry if Smoothies aren’t your thing because they have a full, high-quality drinks list, so you can still sip your G&T whilst relaxing in the shade, or enjoy fancy

pre-bar cocktails on the sunshine terrace. We then sampled a few delicious bites from their menu. It was tough, but we chose the Greek God salad with Chicken, Feta cheese and olives, The Californian Hottie Panini and the Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls, which are one of their specialities. I loved the fact that everything can be cus-

tomised to suit your taste. You can add chicken, king prawns, tuna or roast beef to any of the salads. Or you can “Super up your Salad” with mixed seeds, Quinoa or Goji Berries. The Californian Hottie is a fabulous option for vegetarians, with a mouth-watering combination of Roasted peppers, Goat’s cheese and fresh Basil. And you

must try the Vietnamese rolls: bundles of finelygrated pak choi, carrot, onion, rice noodles, coriander, king prawns and roast pork, all wrapped up in a delicate roll with a tasty, side-dipping sauce. The flavour is out of this world. Magic also has free WiFi and convenient underground parking just across the road, and it’s the perfect place for meetings or business lunches. As with all the Venture Restaurant establishments, you can always count on professional and friendly service, as well as amazing quality and value for money. Not forgetting that they can cater for any of your special occasions such as birthdays, baby showers, afternoon parties, business meetings, or for any other requirements! Magic Café is open from 11am until 6pm every day, and I can assure you that’s where I’ll be heading for my lunch from now on.

By Monica Dyson IT was recently reported that the oldest women to give birth to a baby in my home town here in the UK - two in the past five years had been 52 years of age. And, apparently, it has been a growing trend among local women to defer starting a family until later in life. Of course, the joy of having a baby is the same, whatever the mother’s age, but is it just a little bit selfish to leave it as late as that? I mean, we are talking about heading towards pensioner age here. But that seems to pale into insignificance when compared with a case in which a 59-year-old British woman was offered fertility treatment by a UK clinic, making her well over 60 when she would actually have had the baby. Susan Tollefsen already had a child, born when she was 57, as a result of visiting a Russian IVF clinic because most British clinics have a cut-off age of 50-55. It is believed that it would have been the first time a British clinic has offered IVF to a woman so old. They have previously held

back from it for two reasons. Firstly, bearing a child at an advanced age can be perilous for the mother, and secondly, because an older mum is less likely to be able to see a child through to independence. However, luckily perhaps, it didn’t happen as Susan’s relationship broke up and she was beset with health problems. These included a serious ulcer and joint replacements, and eventually admitted that it was not a good idea to have had a baby so late in life. Campaigners are already calling for a

change in the law which would ban older women from obtaining IVF treatment. One of the oldest women on record in the UK to give birth was 66, and she had travelled to the Ukraine for fertility treatment. And in 1997, Elizabeth Buttle gave birth at the age of 61 after lying about her age, saying she was 49 in order to obtain medical help. It had been 35 years since the birth of her last child, and this time it gave her a place in the Guinness Book of Records as Britain’s Oldest Mum. There has to

be a happy medium between doing it in your 20s or 30s and waiting until your eggs are gasping with their dying breaths! I have heard it said that the death of your mother is the first sorrow in your life that you weep over without her. And it doesn’t seem fair to subject your children to that when they are quite young. The world’s oldest mother, a Spanish woman who gave birth to twin boys after fertility treatment at the age of 66, died before their third birthday, leaving them orphans. Obvi-

ously, she thought she would have a few more years as a mother than she actually did have. This case led to calls throughout Europe for more stringent checks to be made. As most grandparents will testify, you simply do not have the energy or patience to look after young children for long when you are older. You may love them to bits, but it’s not without a sense of relief that you hand them back to their parents. But there again, is it really anyone else’s business when a woman chooses to give birth? After all, it is her body. Or should women accept the natural stages of their lives which are to reproduce at a time acceptable to society? There can be some advantages to being an older mother. You have usually retired, so there are no problems with childcare, or with work/ home conflict, and you are usually financially solvent. You needed to be to pay the cost of IVF, if that was the route you went down, and so you can give the child every material advantage. You often have a more settled home life and a strong marriage, and you know how to look after yourself physically, emotionally and nutritionally, both during pregnancy and while looking after the child. Your reasons for want-

ing a child are often because you have a much younger partner. However, on the minus side, the older mother can face real problems, least of all being the oldest mother at the school gates! And while the child may well be part of a loving family, it will probably never know the close bond between grandchild and grandparent. There is also a real risk that the child could become an orphan at quite a young age. Are there members of the family who will care for the child if this happens? Having said all that, it seems that there is not the same righteous indignation when a man fathers babies in his 60s or 70s, so it can seem a tad sexist in that respect. A year or so ago, Britain’s oldest dad died at the age of 78 years, just short of his youngest son’s first birthday. His other children with his 37-year-old wife were three and two years old. He was already grandad to 16 and great-grandad to three by his first marriage. And we are used to celebrity fathers of a certain age, like 54-year-old Simon Cowell. Is society guilty of stigmatising women for having babies when they are considered older mums, but patting men on the back for being macho?

An act of kindness PAT and Paul Adlam’s ship came in on Sunday, but not before a generous act by one of Tenerife’s entertainers.

Olsen Cruise and Tenerife

Sunshine put up a 10-day cruise from Tenerife to the UK as a raffle prize to raise funds for Ian Lennard, a long-standing, wellrespected musician who has been unable to work for a considerable time because of a very serious illness.

The lucky ticket was actually bought by Ken Sharratt, who works on the Island as a Roy Orbison tribute act. But In a lovely gesture, he opted to auction off the cruise. After a flurry of bids, the winners were Pat and Paul who picked up their tickets at Tenerife

Sunshine on Tuesday and will leave Santa Cruz on 3rd May in an outside cabin, on a fullboard basis. They will be visiting Gran Canaria, La Gomera, La Palma, Madeira, Lisbon and Oporto, and will arrive in Harwich, hopefully in love with cruising

with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and Tenerife Sunshine. When asked why they bid for the prize, Pat said: “It’s all very simple for us really. We have had first-hand experience with a family member who suffered with this awful disease and we were not able to

help them in the same way. “We love Tenerife, and most people here are so nice, too, that we want to become part of this wonderful community. “It was a wonderful day for a wonderful cause, and it warms our hearts to see so many caring people.” Regarding the cruise itself, Pat said “We are happy and looking forward to this very much - we’ve never been on one before. It is a great opportunity to try this out, with the funds going to such a great cause.”

Al Sur arriving in force

A FEAST of Latin American music is guaranteed when the talented Al Sur make their public debut in Los Cristianos on 12th April. But you’ll have a job naming all the members of the group because there are no fewer than SEVENTEEN of them! They have all played in other groups and came together a year ago. They have since been polishing their act at various activities in the South in readiness for their big presentation concert at the Auditorio Infanta Leonor. So far, they are known mostly to local Canarians only, but they are confident they will be spreading their wings throughout the Islands after this public introduction. Tickets are 10 euros and can be purchased at the Auditorio box office.

Accion del Sol news

Our Easter Bonnet parade WE will be holding a sponsored dog walk on Sunday, 13th April, starting from Los Cristianos Harbour car park entrance at 10.30am.

The walk follows the seafront to Las Americas and back, via The Patch and Parque Santiago. Please join us with your own dog or, for a five-euro donation, you can “borrow” a refuge dog, which will guarantee to bring a little sunshine into its life.

As Easter will be approaching fast, there will be a prize for the dog and owner wearing the best “Easter bonnet”. Call Accion del Sol on 922 778 630 to reserve your dog for walkies, or for more information on this event.

Sick Wingate student is backed by whole school

The refuge always needs towels, sheets and blankets for the dogs, especially after the recent bad weather. So if you have any to spare, please bring them to the refuge or contact us on the above number for collection. Our grateful thanks to Accion’s many generous and loyal supporters, who all help in their own special ways. Germany travellers wanted Accion is desperately

seeking people travelling to Dùsseldorf, Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, Stuttgart or Munich, who would be willing to take a dog with them. It costs nothing but a little bit of your time, and it gives dogs a chance of a new life in Germany. It’s easier sometimes to rehome larger breeds or special-needs dogs over there, rather than in Tenerife. Accion del Sol is whol-

ly responsible for the dog, and staff at German charity Aktiontier will do all the necessary paperwork and meet you at both airports. The dog will be collected upon arrival at your chosen destination. Please email eneriffa@ aktiontier.org or call 922778630 for more information. Refuge opening times Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 2-5pm. Saturday: 1-6pm.

By Jav JAGUAR’S new F-Type Coupe follows on from their brilliant F-Type convertible, with fabulous looks, a regal cabin and powerful engines.

It is actually a worthy successor to the groundbreaking E-Type Coupe of the Sixties, which, if you’ve ever spotted one, is still a head-turner. And with a top speed of 186mph and its 0-60mph sprint covered in just 4.0sec, the most powerful F-type coupé is an absolute belter. The Coupe comes in three versions: the FType V6, which produces 335bhp, the 375bhp F-Type S and the F-Type V8 R, which has 543bhp and 680Nm of torque. Both S and R models feature adaptive dampers for improved handling, plus an active ex-

haust which produces a spectacular engine note. Whatever your choice, Jaguar guarantee an exhilarating driving experience - every bit as good as the rival Porsche 911 and Cayman, as well as Aston Martin’s V8 Vantage. The range starts from £51,235, which is about £7,000 less than the convertible and around the same price as a Porsche Cayman S with a PDK gearbox. Jaguar conceived the F-Type solely as a convertible, but even they would now admit the Coupe is far more handsome. The stylish design is a match for supercars costing double, and it makes a Cayman or 911 seem rather bland alongside.

All models are stunning lookers, and the R model is a real eyeopener, with larger alloy wheels and quad tailpipes rather than the twin centrally-mounted exhausts of the V6 and the V6S. Inside the F-Type, the cabin doesn’t quite match the exterior flamboyance, but I’m sure there will be few complaints from aficionados. The cabin is top quality, with a neat dashboard angled towards the driver. And all versions are given leather trim as standard, Jaguar have borrowed an idea from Porsche by putting many of the most desirable features on the options’ list., which means that comfort items such as heated seats will cost you

extra. The addition of a fixed roof means the Coupe’s aluminium body is significantly stiffer than the convertibles. In fact, Jaguar claims it has the most torsionally rigid body - with maximum resistance to twisting forces - of any production car it has ever built. The improved handling and ride quality over this already-brilliant convertible is plain to see and feel. Combine this with the quick, precise steering, strong grip, perfect 50:50 weight distribution and rear-wheel drive and you have great driver’s car. All F-Types allow the driver to select Dynamic Mode, which gives a sharper throttle response, increases steer-

ing weight and changes the smooth, eight-speed automatic transmission’s shift pattern. The S and R models add adaptive dampers as standard for improved handling and comfort, though the entry V6 is hardly wanting in either department. The V6 S and V8 R are also fitted with active exhausts as standard, and these really do emphasise the brilliant sounds of their engines. Main pick of the lineup for keen drivers is bound to be the V6 S because it is almost as fast as the V8 R, yet handles just a little better because of the lighter, more compact engine. Jaguar has a wealth of experience building aluminium chassis, and the V6 and V8 engines both take

elements from the company’s other models. Also, two-stage stability control is standard across the range, ensuring that even the most inexperienced drivers won’t be caught out by the powerful F-Type in adverse conditions. The V6 S adds a mechanical, limited-slip differential (LSD) for even better grip, and the V8 R goes one better with an advanced electronically-controlled diff. Stopping power isn’t a problem for the FType, either, because the V8 R boasts the largest brake discs ever fitted to a production Jaguar. As with luxury items, though, some of the advanced active safety kit on the F-Type is optional, including the blindspot warning system and reversing camera. The biggest problem with the F-Type’s practicality is the rear visibility, the huge C-pillars making it tricky to see when looking over your shoulder at filter junctions, or joining the motorway. Fuel economy is unlikely to be a big concern for those wealthy enough to afford a Jaguar F-Type. But a stopstart system, standard on every model, keeps CO2 emissions down to a relatively reasonable 209g/km, which is impressive for such a high-performance sports car and certainly won’t displease drivers.

Don’t drive classic cars out of London A MOVE to ban old motors from central London has met with opposition from classic car enthusiasts.

The proposal, to help reduce pollution in the capital, is for a total ban on all petrol and diesel cars which

fail to meet EU4 and EU6 emissions standards from entering the London Congestion Charge Zone. The magazine Classic & Sportscar is leading a campaign to ensure exemptions for classics in the legislation. It is concerned that classics could bear the brunt of the new rules.

Group editor James Elliott wants to ensure the free movement of historic vehicles owned by drivers living in and out of the zone. Otherwise, he says, annual events such as the colourful Regent Street motor show and the London-to-Brighton run would cease to exist.

The sister title to Autocar also proposes that classic car-related companies should be free to operate without restriction. Mr Elliott adds: “Even though there are some 800,000 pre1981 classic cars in the UK, their contribution to pollution is so tiny that it is virtually immeasurable.

“Yet they will be just as affected by this as the heavily-polluting diesel vehicles that this proposed legislation is intending to curb. “Classic cars constitute a £4.5billion business, employing nearly 30,000 people in the UK, and there are many dealers and support industries within

the proposed area that could be driven out of business. “And owners living within the zone would find driving their own cherished car outlawed overnight. “We are not talking about old bangers here, but pieces of history which have been lovingly preserved for generations.”

A five-star performance

MAKE no mistake, this had been coming. As predicted here last week, the Mallorca defeat was just a blip and Tenerife returned to winning ways in brutal fashion.

While they have been solid in Santa Cruz, there has been a feeling that, at times, they have let some teams off. The phrase “nervy last 10 minutes” could have been coined for Tenerife. The Recreativo match a fortnight ago was a great example of how the game should have been put to bed long before the clock hit 80 minutes. Ditto Real Jaen and, you can argue, Castilla and Barca B earlier in the season. But not last Sunday. Tenerife declared on five and really, it could have been far more embarrassing. Ponfer were thoughtless from the first kick, and they didn’t learn their lesson during a painful, soul-crushing

two hours. It was almost as if they had never seen Tenerife play, never studied a tape and hadn’t heard of Ayoze the wonderkid. They allowed Tenerife to hit on the counter, or with pace and width, and deserved all they

got. Ayoze Perez was magnificent. If you are a regular reader, you know all about the youngster, and I urge you to see him in the flesh before he moves on to bigger and better things. Yes, he is still raw and, with some composure,

he would have notched a few more. But for the moment, he is as good as there is in the league. His move to Porto looks as good as done and we will miss him. But he hasn’t gone yet and he could leave us with a fantastic goingaway present. This slaying of Ponfer pushed Tenerife up to seventh and into the last play-off place because Barca B’s position doesn’t count for promotion purposes. Last week I pointed out how well Las Palmas were going, and they spanked Real Murica 3-1. This actually did Tenerife a favour 24 hours later. The rout started on 11 minutes. A well-worked move saw Ayoze played in behind the back four and, with a cool head, he slotted the ball past Santamaria. Aridane was having a stormer for Tenerife and it was a surprise that it took another 20 minutes for the lead to double. And it came from a rare source: an Ayoze headed goal from a corner! A collector’s item. Just 110 seconds later and it was 3-0 as Ari-

dane claimed his reward for a powerful performance. At the break, Ponfer coach binned the hapless Marcos, and former Tenerife full-back Bellvis also left the building. It made little difference. The fourth goal and Ayoze’s hat-trick came with 22 minutes to go after more sloppy defending gifted him the freedom of Santa Cruz. And minutes, after he was given a breather late on, his replacement, Edgar, rifled in a fifth to pour salt in the away wounds. It was slick, it was glamorous and a win that should see the crowds pour back into the Heliodoro. There are just 11 games to go, with five in Santa Cruz. And if the fans can inspire all home wins, then who knows? Canarian Weekly ratings CD Tenerife: Roberto 7, Ayoze 6, Carlos Ruiz 7, Bruno 7, Javi Moyano 7, Cristo Martin 7, Ricardo 8, Aitor Sanz 7 (Ros 77min), Suso 7, Aridane 8, Ayoze Perez 9 (Edgar 83min). Ponferradina: Santam-

aria 6; Bellvis 5 (Diego Sanchez 46min 5), Alan 6, Ramirez 6, Samuel 6, Acoran 7, Marcos 5 (Fofo 46min 5), Juande 6, Alberto 6, Lara 6 (Berrocal 57min 5), Yuri 5. The run-in starts with a tough trip to the Spanish north-west. Deportivo La Coruna are the biggest team in the league and they are looking to bounce back into La Liga for the second time in three seasons. They have had a steady if unspectacular season, but they were on their A game last week when they won at Real Zaragoza. Yet they were awful when they visited Santa Cruz in the autumn, and it’s worth remembering that Tenerife were not pulling up any trees back then. It’s a different CDT but pretty much the same Deportivo. They have the best defensive record in the league and have only lost once at home, against Las Palmas, since the second week in September. There is no surprise element to them. They are packed with seasoned veterans such as former Liverpool winger Antonio Nunez and div two stalwarts Alex Bergantiños and Toche. Young pups Luis Fernandez and Borja have caught the eye, but they are no world-beaters. In a league that is so tight, they should be further down the road. Depor are solid but unspectacular. In many ways, as we saw in Santa Cruz, they are made for Tenerife. Our counterattacking style is ripe for tearing the defence to shreds. Speed kills kids! I’m sure Alavaro Cervera would take a point right now and, maybe, that will be the game plan. But I believe Depor are very beatable and, even though there is no Aitor Sanz (suspended for an away trip again! Jeez he’s like Paolo di Canio), there are riches to be mined in Galicia.

Extreme delight for Bar 180!

AFTER missing out to Xtreme Sports Bar in the last two seasons, Bar 180 A have regained the Premier League title.

And in some style, too, dishing out a 7-1 thrashing to The Pub. With Mick sitting top of the pile in the maximum charts, and a John Lowe Team Handicap final to play tonight (Friday), it’s fair to say that they have done rather well! Palms Sports Bar took 13 points from a double header with Target Titans, which guarantees them second place, while Phoe-

nix Bar held on to third after The Pub’s demise at Bar 180. Relegated Gaffers A somehow managed a draw with Target Army in a match notable for committee man Rob’s first 180. Talk about leaving it late! And there were lastleg wins for La Caña Pirates and Ourplace Naturals. Division One has been winding up to a crescendo over the past weeks, with any one of three teams still in the hunt for the third-place trophy as they played their last league fixture. The important results saw Bar 180 C beat Naughty Nautas 5-3 and Emerald Lounge

draw with Amistad 1, leaving the two teams level on points with 149 apiece. After a bit of headscratching, and this secretary counting trebles-leg wins on his fingers and toes, it was confirmed that Bar 180 C will get the trophy. This came as a bit of a shock to Arny, as he had already congratulated Emerald Lounge! Two other relevant results at the bottom

came as Summerland and Barracuda Bytes both lost 5-3, sending Summerland down into Division 2 by a single point. Division 2 champions Tenerife Sun warmed up for their John Lowe final with Bar 180 A by winning 6-2 at Amistad 2, while the Shamrocks signed off an excellent maiden season by beating the Hunters with the same scoreline. But, the Hunters ain’t

finished yet. They will have a say in who gets third place as they face Picasso’s in a catch-up match tonight Friday. Seven points will do it, so please don’t get six or I’ll be getting my fingers and toes out again! Picasso’s did beat Sundowners 5-3, but La Caña Lancers could already have claimed third place had they not been held to a draw by Phoenix Flights. You just know they have Barracuda on speed dial for tonight! As already mentioned, the John Lowe Team Handicap Trophy and Plate finals are being played tonight. The venue for both matches is Chipeque Pool Bar, in

Handy Andy’s premier slot WE had a double header of point-scoring games this week in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League, with many teams playing midweek catch-up games. And for those with players in teams playing twice, the opportunities for extra points were

bountiful. The top point-scoring players who make up the team of the week were again well represented by the teams fighting relegation, certainly after the weekend matches. The midweek team of the week mainly comprised players

from Manchester City, Everton and Liverpool, who all had good results. As for our league table, we’ve been waiting for it to happen over the last few weeks and, as we predicted, we have a new league leader. Steve Schofield has led from the front for the majority of the season, but Andy Palmer’s Premier Sat Utd have taken top spot, although there is only a four-point gap. But knowing Andy, he won’t want to relinquish

his lofty position, so Steve must now get his team selection right to catch him. Team of the week goes to Jonay Diaz, whose @Jony TF scored an impressive total of 175 points over the combined period, which moves him into third position. In the battle of the DJ’s, Adi is back out in front and has a 46-point lead over Roscoe, who moved into second place. However, Chris Elkington is just two points behind him.

But Maggie is preparing herself for the wooden spoon because she needs to make up 191 points! Top Ten standings

There’s always next season, Maggie. Same applies to Birmingham!

Title maybe decided this week WEDNESDAY could be the night that the Direct Telecom 8 Ball Pool League’s Division One title is settled.

Second-place Gaffers A host leaders and holders Tenerife Hammers A in what could be the game of the season. Four points separate them, but Gaffers have a game in hand and the destiny of the title is still in their hands. The Hammers would take a draw right now, while a win for them would surely mean game over. Both teams were in good form this week. Hammers A were too strong for Exiles A, with Shammy and the boys from Silencio managing just one BOOM between them! Gaffers didn’t have it as easy, but they were comfortable against Treehouse A. It would be nice to see a few spectators at the match, and Neil is even laying on extra food. Well, he is now! Elsewhere, Palms A moved up to fourth in the league with a

comfortable victory over Terrace A, sending the golf boys into the relegation places, with a good performance on the night from Roscoe (he made me say that!). Inn the Pink A remain fifth after being made to earn their point against The Peacocks. It could prove to be a big point as well for the Peacocks as they fight for survival in this division. Hammers C, also fighting for their lives, were at the out-ofform Phoenix Potters in a match dubbed “The Werthers Bowl”. The Hammers swept into an impressive 4-0 lead and confidence was buoyant, but the Potters regrouped, opened a fresh packet of toffees and fought back. They had to check their eyes (not for the first time) as they took the next eight frames and victory! In Division Two we have new leaders. With Inn the Pink B not in action this week, Palms B took full advantage. They moved to the summit with a good victory over Bluebell B, who had been in fine form

The battle is also warming up nicely for the third spot between James Places, Exiles B and Bluebell B. James Place hold it at the moment but Bluebell A helped out their bar mates by beating them in a close game. Exiles B weren’t in action this week, but the gap between the three teams is just one point. And they are all on the same points, so it is going to be an interesting run-in. There was also a derby

game that saw Gaffers B take on Gaffers C. I hope they played for the Juicee Bowl! The B team are a couple of places higher than the C team, but this counted for nothing with the latter taking the win and bragging rights. 2JZ’s, looking for a top-10 finish, hosted Treehouse B and managed to grab the win in a good game. Battling Brenda just pipped WEEKS of gruelling games at the prestigious Winter Gardens on Golf del Sur, led to the eventual line-up for Teide Bowls Club’s finals’ weekend. Again, the sun shone and the wind abated for a perfect championship, which provided some entertaining encounters. The Ladies Singles kept the crowd on the edge of their seats as

Brenda Halliday, trailing Vicki Evans 12-0 fought back magnificently. She recovered to be just one behind at 20-19 and held the two shots for victory. But Vicki sent her last wood up, which glided in to give her a breathtaking 21-19 success. There was a surprise in the Men’s Singles when Win Debecker, a relative newcomer to the sport,

beat Bill Rogerson comfortably. Thanks go to all supporters, umpires, markers and scorers, who did a sterling job. FINALS’ RESULTS Mixed Triples Christine Kennedy, Bill Rogerson & Frank Kennedy beat Sue Sayers, Sam McQuade & Carol McQuade Mixed Pairs Jean McCallum & Tony

PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW By Adi Benson THE Premier League is brilliant right now and it looks as though everything will go to the wire! This weekend, we get another set of barnstorming fixtures. Man Utd v Aston Villa (Saturday, 12.45pm) Just when United started to get back on track, they were bulldozed by their noisy neighbours. This is turning into the worst title defence since Buster Douglas faced Evander Holyfield. David Moyes’ charges are still five points off sixth place, but that gap could narrow if results favour them this weekend. Villa are nine points above the relegation battle and, though not mathematically safe, they are not going down. They have struggled against teams around them, yet have beaten some of the top clubs this season. After biffing Chelsea at home, they will fancy their chances against United. Prediction: Home win West Brom v Cardiff (Saturday, 3pm) We are now at the stage of the season where, for certain clubs, every game becomes a mustwin - and that applies to this fixture. West Brom

have had a torrid season and, if they are to stay in the Premier League, they must take three points here. Cardiff don’t have the experience of a relegation fight, which could prove costly for them. They have a talented bunch of players and they will have to give everything they’ve got to stay up. They have played well recently without getting their reward. But after scoring three against Liverpool last week, they are a confident pick. Prediction: Away win Swansea v Norwich (Saturday, 3pm) Swansea have a little cushion between themselves and relegation, but they still have a lot to do as it is so close at the bottom of the table. They put in a good performance against Arsenal at the Emirates and came away with a good point, which should give

them the confidence they need to grab a win here. Especially against a Norwich side who don’t travel well. Norwich, also not safe, have a slightly better points tally than Swansea. And if they could get a win here, they could start to breathe a little easier. Prediction: Home win Stoke v Hull (Saturday, 3pm) A mid-table clash with not too much riding on the outcome. Stoke can’t better their position with a win, but they have been in fine form recently and will look to continue this. Mark Hughes has managed to change the way they play, and they make for better viewing now they have cut out the longball game. Hull may have one eye on the FA Cup semifinal as they are pretty much guaranteed another season of Premier League football.

Prediction: Home win Soton v Newcastle (Saturday, 3pm) Southampton sit just a point behind their visitors and will look to leapfrog them with a victory. They were a little unlucky against Spurs last weekend, I thought they played well and I am starting to think more and more that Adam Lallana is worth a place on the plane to Brazil - and that Jay Rodriguez also has an outside chance. Newcastle will want to put the Everton horror show behind them, but this is going to be another difficult game for them. They look as though they are already on the beach. Prediction: Draw C Palace v Chelsea (Saturday, 3pm) Palace need to be very careful. They have got themselves out of the bottom three, but recent results have been poor again. There are whispers of off-field bust-ups, and they still need to grind out the points. Chelsea need to focus and ensure the Villa defeat was just a blip. With Man City finding their groove, they cannot afford to drop many more points between now and the end of the season. A massive London derby for both sides and, in some ways, the loser is in big trouble. Prediction: Away win (I hope I’m wrong) Arsenal v Man City (Saturday, 5.30pm) Arsenal the enigma: for some reason, they cannot perform against the teams around them, with big losses already against Liverpool, Man

City and then Chelsea last weekend, plus a disastrous midweek draw with Swansea. And now City arrive in town. After the last few fixtures, Arsenal are still not guaranteed fourth spot, and they need a big performance this weekend or the “Wenger Out” comments will continue. But it is simple for City: keep winning and the title is theirs, so I expect the same level of performance we saw against Man Utd on Tuesday night. They will not take their foot off the gas, and they will have seen what Liverpool and Chelsea did to Arsenal with early goals. Prediction: Away win Fulham v Everton (Sunday, 1.30pm) It’s getting hard for Fulham now. Confidence is low and they are running out of games. Felix Magath will certainly earn his money if he manages to pull off the biggest escape since, well, Fulham’s last escapology act. They need to start winning games. Right now! Everton are flying. At 25-1 for a Champions League place a week ago, they are now as short as 6-1. And the way they are playing, anything is possible. They are six points off Arsenal with a game inhand. They face Arsenal next weekend - and a win here could really apply the pressure. Prediction: Away win Liverpool v Spurs (Sunday, 4pm) Liverpool looked nervy against Sunderland, and maybe they are starting to feel the pressure a little. After all, it

has been a while since they were involved in a title fight. It is well documented that they score goals, but, for me, they are too leaky at the back to win the league. Spurs will prove a tough task and have some good attacking players, so Liverpool really need to tighten up in defence or the wheels could come off their season. Spurs haven’t given up on fourth spot, but seven points is a big gap and looks unlikely. They staged a spirited comeback to beat Southampton on Sunday, but their defence must keep Liverpool’s attacking threat to a minimum. This is a big game for them - and it would be a massive win. Prediction: Home win Sunderland v West Ham (Monday, 8pm) Sunderland’s survival hopes still rest in their own hands as they have games in hand over their rivals. But they will count for nothing if they don’t turn them into points, and at the minute they are not doing a good job of it. They had a good second half against Liverpool, but the damage had already been done. Yet if they can produce that level of performance here, a win is possible. West Ham were booed off by their own fans on Wednesday night, even though they had won at home. Obviously, to some fans, points aren’t everything: they want to see football played a certain way. But Big Sam, though not a manager for the purists, has ensured Premier League survival. Prediction: Draw
