Two female doctors drown after being swept out by waves TWO British mothers died when huge waves swept them off the rocks at Playa Paraiso and out to sea on Sunday - but their two children and another woman survived.

Barathi Ravikumar, 40, and Uma Ramalingam, 42, both doctors, were on holiday together with their families when the tragedy occurred. They were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third woman was saved by the searchand-rescue helicopter, which had been scrambled following an emergency call. Dr Ramalingam’s husband, Palanichamy Chandra, a 49-year-old consultant gastroenterologist, dived in but could only save their 10-year-old son, Hari. Miraculously, the 14-year-old girl - unnamed - was rescued by Adam Cramer holidaymaker who had checked into his hotel, overlooking the scene, minutes earlier. “The waves are always

very rough,” recalled Mr Cramer, who had stayed at Playa Paraiso - five miles west of Las Americas - several times before. “They come crashing in against the rocks. If you’re stuck out on one of them, you’re going to struggle to get back.” The 49-year-old accountant from Mill Hill, north-west London, rushed down to the shore after hearing a woman shouting for help. He promptly spotted a young girl in the water by the rocks. “Eve-

ryone was just standing there helpless because it wasn’t possible to get anywhere close to the sea to get in and help her,” he said. But Adam, a father of three, waited for a big swell and dived into it courageously, making his way to the teenager. Somehow, he was able to drag her away from the rocks and out of the pull of the waves. “She was conscious and was able to talk to me,” he said after carrying her and swimming for about 10 minutes down the coast, where they clambered on to the shore with the help of a swimming ring. By that time, a helicopter and lifeboat had arrived to help pull the others out of the water. Two ambulances were standing by as well. As emergency crews attempted to revive one of the women, Borja Sánchez, of the Roca Nivaria hotel, heard someone yell that one person was still missing in the water. “The helicopter crew then caught sight of the other woman,” said Borja. “She had been swept further away, but they rescued her and brought her to land. Sadly, they couldn’t revive her.” The tragedy, he said, unfolded in less than 20 minutes and added: “It was a horrendous situation.” Hari was taken to hospital with suspected hypothermia, and the 14-year-old girl was

treated at the scene for minor bruising. The third woman was treated in hospital for water in her lungs and is not believed to be in a critical condition. Mr Cramer said on Tuesday: “The girl told me I had saved her life. She wasn’t even in swimwear - she was in shorts and a T-shirt. “They had been standing on the rocks, looking at the waves crashing in. Unfortunately, one of those waves was so big that it swept them out to sea.” He added: My hotel overlooks a rocky outcrop that juts into the sea, and I felt the group had probably been swept into the water by a wave. “I’ve got three great children and all I can see is the faces of those kids who lost their parents.” Police and the fire brigade assisted in the emergency operation,

and the Guardia Civil is now investigating the incident. Colleagues of Uma Ramalingam, a consultant gynaecologist originally from Chennai, India, who lived in upmarket Bowden, Greater Manchester, paid tribute to her on Monday. Olubusola Amu, a consultant and clinical director of women and children’s services at the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS trust, said: “Uma had been working for the trust for about six years. “She was a fantastic clinician who brought a lot of hope to the highrisk patients attending the women and children’s unit at the Royal Oldham hospital. “This is a terrible shock to me and everyone who knew Uma. Our thoughts are with her family. She will be sorely missed.” The dead woman suffered tragedy seven years ago when her first husband, Dr Kannan Palaniswamy, was killed in a car crash near the Dundee hospital where they both worked. Barathi Ravikumar was a partner at a surgery in Bracebridge Heath, Lincolnshire, where she was described as “a hard-working and dedicated GP”. A statement on the surgery’s website said: “It is with regret that we have to inform you that Dr Barathi Ravikumar has been fatally injured in an accident while on holiday with her family. “Dr Ravikumar joined the practice in 2011 and became a partner in 2012. During her short time with the practice, she was passionate about making a difference to healthcare in Lincolnshire and specialised in working with ‘Looked After Children’. Dr Ravikumar will be sorely missed and leaves behind a husband and two children.” A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman said: “We are aware of reports of an incident in Tenerife and we are in touch with the local authorities and providing consular assistance.”

A week after callous thieves reaped havoc at a school for handicapped children in Guargacho, staff at EZE Group have provided some cheer by donating computer tablets and digital cameras. Matthew Harper, sales director at Los

Cristianos based EZE Group, handed over the equipment to children and staff during a special visit to Centro de Educacion Especial (CEE) in Guargacho on Wednesday. When the company read about the plight of the school they decided to spend funds

raised through the EZE Group Foundation on replacing some of the stolen equipment. A recent fund-raising visit to Tenerife by Eze Group Ambassadors and darts stars James Wade and Simon Whitlock raised over 5,000 euros for the EZE

Group Foundation and the company decided to use all the money to support island based causes. “The break-in by vandals had a devastating impact on the children and staff, particularly as the school is struggling for funding,” said Mat-

thew. “When we heard about the problem we had no hesitation in using some of the money we raised to replace the stolen equipment. “It’s a small gesture, but we really hope it helps the local community, including parents who have come togeth-

Community chips in ALONG with EZE Group, there has been a tremendous response from the community as the CEE Disabled School Adeje tries to get back to normality. The council has released funds to help with the upkeep of the school following last week’s break-in by vile thieves. There are five workmen currently sprucing up the exterior. Pot-holes have been filled in, running repairs carried out and the exterior is even getting a lick of paint. And extra protection has been implemented: there are now security cameras, and the school

will be fitted with security grills. But this doesn’t erase the memory of that horrendous break-in. The police seem to have made little progress in catching the scum who stole everything, from laptops to the special food in the cupboard. As always, the local community has rallied around and there have been many offers of help. Former Amarilla Golf captain Simon Shovler has purchased equipment worth 1,200 euros, including a couple of laptops and other electrical items. Paul and Muriel, from

the Golf Shop next to Canarian Weekly Oasis Fm, have purchased a laptop and a computer. The Lions of Arona, Las Galletas and Costa Del Silencio have agreed to purchase security grills for all the interior classrooms. This will ensure the school is alarmed both internally and externally, while the Santiago Del Teide Lions will be helping on a different project. As usual, those on our entertainment scene have rallied around. Shane Haigh Sousa, who will soon be on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent with his Mister Sister show,

Canaries lead the way! RAFAEL DOMENECH, a leading bank’s chief economist, believes the Canary Islands will be at the forefront of Spain’s economic recovery.

He maintains the Islands’ economy is set to grow by 1.5% this year, and a further 2.5% in 2015, leaving it positioned to put the recession far behind us.

Domenech, from the bank’s Developed Economies department, outlined his reasons during the Canary Islands’ Status Report on Monday. He was accompanied at a press conference by Fernando Alonso, BBVA’s Canary Islands director. The Canaries “bottomed out” in 2013, and the recovery is just becoming evident, said Domenech, who added that several factors

Rivero demanding road-fund millions CANARIES’ President Paulino Rivero is still battling to collect the outstanding 462m-euro Spanish Government payment for road improvements. The State had promised to pay 639m euros under the Roads Convention between 2012 and 2014, but has so far come up with just177m. Rivero, responding in Parliament to a question from the Canary Nationalist Party, said the Roads Convention, in which that figure was

agreed, was signed in 2006. He highlighted Article 95 in the Fiscal Regime (REF), which says that roads linking the main cities in the Canary Islands are “of general interest to the Islands, and, therefore, subject to State funding”. Rivero said the situation “requires understanding” and stressed that the Canaries Government would “in no way give up what belongs to the Islands”.

“This has had a positive effect on rates of profitability of the hotel industry.” Domenech, far from forgetting some Mediterranean countries’ financial instabilities during this period, was quick to applaud the “dynamism” of the Canaries, and the offer of “best value” holidays. He also said the Islands faced “significant” challenges and insisted that reforms

must continue to be enforced to increase the effect of labourforce policies, productivity and competitiveness. Domenech closed by saying that 2014 should be “easier” than 2013, given that the process of fiscal consolidation was more advanced than in some areas in Spain, particularly as the Islands met their deficit objective of -1.2% last year.

Coma family offer 3k reward THE family of a father-of-two, left for dead in an empty swimming pool in Las Americas, have posted a 3,000-euro reward for information leading to a conviction.

They believe Andy Openshaw was the victim of a vicious assault that left him fighting for his life in the Green Clinic hospital. But Arona police, adamant he merely fell or dived into the pool, have washed their hands of the incident, despite evidence from specialists which does not support their view. Andy, from Westleigh, Wigan, was on a stag do in January when, on his first night, he was found on the floor of the Sanraf apartments’ pool with a fractured skull. Arona Police initially claimed he had dived into the pool, but that theory was dismissed by his family. His mother and father flew over and met with the police, refuting their report of the incident after reading their sketchy details. These included a claim that emergency services arrived at the scene at 12.45am, despite a recording of them receiving a call 15 minutes later. They also said he had scaled a huge wall to get in to the complex, even though the gate was wide open. After a big fund-raising campaign to get Andy home for specialist treatment in the UK - insurance companies refused to pay out, believing it to be a drunken accident - a £30,000 total was raised by public sympathisers to fly him back to Lancashire He was taken immediately to Liverpool’s renowned Walton Centre, where the full extent of his appalling injuries was revealed. Consultants said the

31-year-old had also sustained fractured eye sockets, cheekbones and jaw sockets, as well as two broken fingers and a dislocated knuckle. They believed Andy’s injuries were not consistent with him merely falling or diving into a pool. Instead, they were convinced he had been brutally attacked. Relatives of the Westleigh dad, including wife Laura, were told that he had been kicked around the eye sockets, the cheekbones and lower jaw, and that he had front temple fracturesas well as the main impact to the rear of his head. Since these details were revealed in February, the family have become determined for

but there has been no progress. However, after carrying out their own investigations, the Openshaws believe there is a key witness, who saw the attack and they have decided on the cash incentive for any information that leads to a conviction. Andy’s father, Simon, said: “If this were to happen, it would help the truth come out and the insurance would also have to pay out.” “But our only way forward now is for someone in Tenerife to come forward with information. “The Spanish police have now altered their initial report, with their inaccuracies, which we had given to us, with a lady called Mary from the British Consulate present. But they still

claim Andrew dived into that pool.” Although the family are frustrated that the investigation has not been reopened, there have been positive signs with regards to Andy’s progress in recent weeks. Initially, Spanish doctors gave him 48 hours to live, prompting relatives to fly over to Spain to be at his bedside. Now though, with him back in Britain, he has made steady progress. “He has been making some movements,” added Simon. “He has also started trying to speak and he’s been making noises, which is obviously a really good sign. “The other day, a nurse heard him call Laura’s name, and a nurse in another room came running in after she heard it, too.”

MPs snub Catalan bid for referendum

A humbling experience I SPENT last weekend in the UK – well, Dorset to be exact. It’s the sort of place you couldn’t wait to leave as a youngster. It’s in the middle of nowhere, there was nothing to do and it was so boring. But as an adult, it’s paradise. Because it’s in the middle of nowhere, there is nothing to do and it’s so boring. I like the trips back to the UK because they remind me of how happy I am to be living here. There really is so much we take for granted. Reading the local papers, I was overcome with the feeling of relief. Relief that we don’t have to fill this paper with so much crime and bad news. But we still have our bad days. The events of Monday (pages 1and 3), and last week’s disgusting burglary of the CEE school in Guargacho, are a sharp reminder of how horrible this world can be. On Tuesday I was fortunate enough to visit the school (page 4) with Liz Montague, from Helping Hands, and EZE Group’s Matthew Harper, to see first-hand what had happened. Liz is a regular visitor, but it’s safe to say that Matt and I were not prepared for what we saw. The school has 28 children and they all have severe disabilities. I can only imagine how hard it must be for the parents, and that is why the CEE School is so im-

portant. The 15 teachers, carers and helpers are doing amazing work every single day. It’s easy to see the progress being made, together with the rewards the children get from their hard work. The school is basic, in every single way. There is no central government funding and the local councils give minimal help. That’s not a dig, but a fact. The school relies on the charity it receives, and the help it has been given is repaid in spades by the work being done to help these incredible children. I’m delighted and proud that our community was able to rally around and ensure the thieving scum didn’t affect the lives of these brave kids. I cannot undersell how important the stolen items are to the children’s progress. But, thankfully, they have no understanding of what has happened. After an hour at the school, I left without a care in the world because my problems and troubles are nothing. But I left with one wish. I hope the scum responsible are caught, and then made to look every child in the eye. Before their nice “welcome” - in some 6 by 8!

AN attempt by Catalan authorities to stage a referendum on independence on 9th November has been rejected by Spanish MPs.

After seven hours of debate, 299 MPs voted against the motion, with 47 votes in favour and one abstention. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy earlier warned a referendum would be “an economic disaster” for both Spain and Catalonia. Plans to let the eastern region people break away from Spain has led to months of constitutional debate. The region already enjoys a wide degree of autonomy, but Spain’s economic crisis fuelled Catalan nationalism. All Spain’s major political parties, including Mr Rajoy’s conservative Popular Party and the Socialist opposition, opposed the petition, with Catalan and Basque nationalist parties voting in favour. Rajoy repeated his ar-

gument that a referendum would be considered illegal because, under Spanish law, referendums on sovereignty must be held nationally and not regionally. “Together we all win - but separate, we all lose,” he told Parliament in a pre-vote debate. “This isn’t just

a question of law, but of sentiment … I can’t imagine Spain without Catalonia, or Catalonia out of Europe.” But following the vote, Catalan President Artur Mas said his regional government would still press ahead with the plan to hold a referendum in November.

Catalan President Artur Mas had previously signalled he would not break the law. But now he said: “Some would like to present this as the end of the matter but, as President of Catalonia, I say to them that it is not the end.” He added that the Catalan authorities would search for legal mechanisms to find a way to continue consultations on the referendum. Tensions between the Spanish Government and Catalonia’s regional government have been rising in recent months. The regional government announced in December that it had decided on the two questions it would put to the electorate. Voters would be asked if they wanted Catalonia to be a state, and if they wanted it to be an independent state. The Catalan regional authorities have a long history of fighting the central authorities in Spain for greater autonomy. Catalonia is one of Spain’s most developed regions, with a population of 7.5 million.

Property market is on the way up THE Canary Islands was the only region to post positive property sale figures between February 2013 and this February.

But on a national level, sales fell by 27.6% in the same period. The figures were released on Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE),

and show an overall fall in sales for the 10th consecutive month. As for the sales figures between January and February this year, a drop of 16.1% is the highest month-onmonth fall since 2010. The annual decline is down mainly to a drop in the sales of new homes (down 37.4%), and, to a lesser extent, by the sales of previously-owned homes (down 17%). The region posting

the highest number of sales per 100,000 of the population in February was Andalucia (94), and that region also led the table for absolute sales, with 5,182 properties changing hands. Behind Andalucia was Valencia (3,842 sales), Madrid (3,776) and Catalonia (3,625), while the regions with the least number of sales were La Rioja (212), Cantabria (282) and Asturias (418). In relative terms, the

Canaries was the only region to increase yearon-year sales, posting a 5% improvement. Regions suffering the biggest drops were Asturias (-43.5%), La Rioja and Cantabria (both -42.2%) and Galicia (-41.2%). Rural properties also experienced an annual drop, farm sales falling by 18.2%, donation deals by 40.4% and swap deals by 42.5%. But farm inheritance figures rose by 8.1%.

Bumper holiday period on cards TWO of the biggest tourism employers in the Canaries predict a “magnificent” Easter for hotels.

Fernando Fraile, President of the Las Palmas Federation of Hospitality and Tourism (FEHT) says surveys indicate that hotels will have generally higher occupancy rates than in previous months, echoing last year’s figures. And Ashotel (Tenerife Hotels Association) believes there will be 89% occupancy in South Tenerife, falling to 63% and 40% in central areas. Fraile expects both hotels and apartments to show high occupancy levels, despite a predicted fall in Scandinavian tourism, because of the current trend of switching from the Canaries to the Mediterranean after the spring.

Flights from Scandinavia start to decrease from this week, which may affect the apartment occupancy figures. Fraile also expects Canary Island residents to take holidays within the Islands, particularly after what he described

as a “cold” winter. As for visitors form the mainland, Fraile suspects that high ticket prices may affect figures for Easter Week. Even so, he is “delighted” with figures that showed the influx of foreign tourists was up by

10.5% last month, compared with March 2013, adding: “This is great news.” But Fraile was disappointed with the delays in implementing the Canary Islands Tourism Renewal act, calling it “a shame” that supply

and demand were not being taken into consideration. “If Gran Canaria had as many beds on offer as Tenerife, we could receive a million more tourists a year, and create employment for many people,” he

stressed. Meanwhile, Ashotel President Jorge Marichal said profitability was improving because of small but noticeable price increases, which have set tourism on the road to recovery after the recession. Regarding recruitment, Marichal does not expect to see much of a rise because many establishments have retained their staff from the winter season. Ashotel estimates that in addition to the encouraging South Tenerife occupancy figures, La Gomera is set to soar, with levels reaching 90% over Easter. Marichal believes that this is a critical time of the year, along with Christmas, and is a good indicator of tourism industry’s progress, year on year. Even in the recession, he added, they were still peak occupancy periods.

Renewable energy draws a bit nearer THE price of renewable energy throughout the Canary Islands should be in place by the summer.

That’s the message from Francisca Luengo, Canaries’ Minister for Employment, Industry and Commerce. It follows this week’s meeting between Luengo and Alberto Nadal, the Spanish Government’s Energy Minister. Luengo said the Ministry for Industry was committed to a price of 84 euros per megawatt, which was agreed in principle back in 2012, but was not made official at the time. “The process is imminent,” said Luengo. “It should come into effect before summer.” The demand for renewable energy in the Canaries is expected to be high, and Luengo also said the community hopes to supply 30.6% of its energy from such renewable sourc-

es by 2020. Pumping stations and electrical cables will have to be installed between the islands to carry the supply. In addition, Luengo stressed that the Canary Islands aim to produce their own electricity to “reduce the deficit and improve economic and social welfare”. It was also agreed to discuss prioritising the work, making the development of Chira Soria an immediate requirement, as well as the electrical inter-connections between Gran Canaria-Fuerteventura and Tenerife-La Gomera. Luengo added: “Without these works, pumping stations and interconnections, it is not possible to increase availability of renewable energy in the Canary Islands.” He also said it was three times cheaper to produce renewable energy than energy from fossil fuels.

Faulty plane turns back LOW-COST airline Vueling’s 7am flight from Los Rodeos to Barcelona on Monday returned to Tenerife’s North airport with an engine fault. The Airbus 320 was on its ascent to 30,000ft and had reached

20,000ft when the fault was detected. The aircraft, flying over Gran Canaria at the time, turned back to Los Rodeos and made an emergency landing. The flight was rescheduled for Monday afternoon.

Winning space for the Canaries again A SATELLITE photo of the new volcano forming off El Hierro beat off tough competition to win NASA’s Earth Observatory Tournament Earth photo competition last year. And the Canaries have done it again! This year’s

photo, Trailing the Canaries, shows sunlight reflecting off the surface of the sea surrounding the Islands. It was entered in the “art” category and secured more votes in the knockout sections of each round than

some other stunning images. And the picture beat a photo of the Kliuchevskoi volcano (in far-east Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula) in the final. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS),

on board NASA’s Terra satellite, took the image on 15th June 2013. It shows apparent trails on the surface of the sea, caused by the reflection of sunlight on areas of the sea, roughened or smoothed by the prevailing winds.

David Cameron is bringing all the family for his first-ever visit to the Canary Islands. His wife, Samantha, will be joined by their three

children, Nancy, Arthur and Florence Rose. It is understood that the Camerons will be staying on the south coast, most probably in Yaiza. Although it will be the Prime Ministerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first trip to the Islands, he is a regular visitor to Spain. In 2011, he took the family to Ibiza for a long weekend, and pictures of them stroll-

ing the streets of Santa Gertrudis made frontpage news. A few months later he visited Granada, staying in Realejo, and he went back to Spain in the summer of 2012. After the rigours of the Olympic Games, the PM enjoyed a week in Mallorca, where he relaxed on the beach almost every day.

Man dies as trucks collide

AN early-morning collision between two trucks on the TF-1 southbound lane yesterday (Thursday) left one man dead and another hospitalised with head injuries.

The crash, which happened by Arico just after 7am, caused chaos on the motorway, with horrific tailbacks all day - 20km long during the rush-hour!

One of vehicles was a fully-loaded Fonteide water truck. Two other people trapped in the wreckage were freed by firefighters and were not taken to hospital.

Blind will soon have time on their hands A WRISTWATCH designed especially for blind people is mostly being bought by those who have perfect vision.

The Bradley Timepiece, named after a Paralympian gold medallist who lost his sight in Afghanistan, is up for Design of the Year at London’s Design Museum. It has a stark, circular titanium face, with no hands or numbers. But a ball-bearing rotates to mark the minutes around a groove in the centre. And around the edge of the watch, another ball-bearing rotates to tell the hours. The Bradley was designed for the use of blind people, the latest in a long line of efforts to help those without sight tell the time efficiently. Designer Hyungsoo Kim was in a lecture hall at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in September 2011 when a neighbouring student asked him the time. “My classmate is visually impaired, and had been for 10 years,” said Kim. The student had a watch that could tell the time, but only by pressing a button that would make it speak out loud. Doing so in a classroom could be disruptive, so instead, says Kim: “I was his wristwatch.” There are a number of timepieces designed for the blind, including the Meteor vibrating watch

which uses a series of rumbles to denote hours and minutes. Tactile, or Braille watches, are popular in the blind and partially sighted community. They look similar to a normal watch, but the front glass can be flipped up, allowing the wearer to touch the hands and tell the time. “If you’re blind, you don’t know if you’ve got up in the middle of the night,” said Leslie Duroe, of the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB), which is Britain’s main charity for the blind and partiallysighted. “It can make people feel very insecure to not know what time it is.” Kim’s previous designs were more functional than beautiful because,

though they are a fashion statement for sighted people, he assumed blind people cared about function only. But once he learned otherwise, he set about designing a good-looking watch which would also enable his pal to tell the time. “I put together a team of engineers, and we came up with the idea of a Braille display,” he said. “One that would display the time written out in Braille.” But his prototype experienced poor feedback because, as he explained: “We learned that less than 10% of visually-impaired people can read Braille. “What’s more, many people in the UK and US are not born blind but develop sight prob-

lems later in their lives.” In fact, 82% of those living with blindness are aged 50 or older, according to the World Health Organisation. With less experience of reading Braille, their sense of touch is often less developed. Kim and his team went back to the drawing board and 25 versions were eventually tested by visually-impaired people. There was always a battle between functionality and producing a beautiful object but, finally, a design was agreed upon: a magnet underneath the metal watch face would control two rotating ballbearings for hours and minutes. But even the ball-bearings were subject to de-

bate. “People wanted the ball-bearings to be bigger so they could feel it better,” recalls Kim. “As designers, though, we were concerned that making them bigger would make the watch clunky. We had to find the midpoint.” In September 2011, the same month Hyungsoo Kim started work on his project, life changed for bomb-disposal officer Lieutenant Bradley Snyder. He stood on an explosive device in Afghanistan, suffering serious injuries and losing his sight. Yet by August 2012 just 11 months later - he had won two swimming gold medals at the London Paralympic Games. But the practicalities of daily life were initially a huge struggle. “I was hurt in Afghanistan and the next thing I know, I’m waking up in hospital in the United States,” he says: “There was a 60-hour-long gap in my memory.” Immediately, Snyder found it difficult to get his bearings. “You don’t realise how much you use time to orient where you are.” he says. “At the beginning, it was very disorienting. And especially being in the military, time is all important.” Eventually Snyder was approached by Kim, after a chance meeting with a mutual friend. “Hyungsoo was making a product for blind people,” says Snyder. “I was his blind guy.”

He adds: “I had a speaking watch for a little while. You pressed a button and it told you the time. Snyder says with a laugh: “It was utilitarian. And if I’m on a train, I can’t hear it.” With the watch now named the Bradley, there was an appeal last July on Kickstarter, the crowd-funding website, and 3,681 people from 65 countries backed the project, donating a total of £357,290. It will be available for sale from next month in the US, with the UK and Europe likely to follow later. A further 1,000 people have since pre-ordered the watch online, but only a tiny fraction Kim estimates between 1-2% - are visually impaired. “It bridges the gap between the disabled and the non-disabled,” says Snyder. This incredible timepiece is now among the favourites in the 76 nominations for the Designs of the Year contest at London’s Design Museum. The nomination has already led to interest from European retailers. There’s an obvious gimmick for selling to sighted people: you can check the time in a social or work setting without appearing rude. “The stereotype is that visually-impaired people are not fashionconscious,” says Kim. “I had that misconception, too, but it’s wrong.”

Canaries’ house-owners are still feeling the pinch THE average price of Canaries’ homes fell by 10.7% in the first quarter of the year.

It represents one of the highest drops in Spain, which saw an average 6.3% drop against the same period last year. The average cost of new ands used housing in Spain is now 1,270 euros per square metre - a drop of 47.1% since the 2007 peak of 2,400 euros - at the beginning of the recession. Despite the disappointing figures, the Valuation Society, which compiled the data, suggests the decline has been less severe than in the past,

particularly in higherquality housing, where the drop was contained at just 3%. Yet the news was better in the cities, house prices in Barcelona and Seville actually rising during the first quarter, posting 0.5% and 3.4% increases respectively. On the other hand, the biggest drops were recorded in Bilbao and Zaragoza, with respective decreases of 14.5% and 14.1%. Regionally, areas experiencing the biggest falls were the Canary Islands (-10.7%) and Valencia (-10.5%). House prices fell the least in Cantabria (-1.3%), Navarra (-2,6%) and Galicia (-3%). The Valuation Society predicts that the downward trend will

continue in the coming months, but will slow down “in the very near future,” becoming less pronounced than in previous periods. In its quarterly report, the Society indicates that despite the slight decrease in unemployment, activity in the housing sector remains “very sensitive to both the difficulties of access and retention of employment” along with “a progressive reduction in family income”. And despite the more encouraging employment statistics, there has not been a significant increase in mortgage approvals, which, the Society says, is an “essential factor for reactivation”.

What’s the story? Liam’s divored! THE six-year marriage of pop stars Nicole Appleton and Liam Gallagher is over following the ex-Oasis singer’s admitted adultery. A “quickie divorce” was granted in a brief hearing at the Principal Registry of the High Court’s Family Division which the pair did not attend. The marriage foundered after reports that the 41-year-old had fathered a daughter with an American journalist. The pair, who have a 12-year-old son called Gene, married at Old Marylebone Town Hall on St Valentine’s Day

in 2008 after getting together eight years earlier. They lived in Hampstead, north London. Among the documents made public was a statement, signed by All Saints Canadian singer Appleton last December, in which she said that Gallagher “admitted adultery to me, prior to it becoming publicised in national newspapers”. She said the woman with whom Gallagher cheated on her “now has a child” by him. Ms Appleton said she first knew about the adultery in July last year. She hadn’t lived

with Gallagher at their Hampstead home in North London since because she found it “intolerable”. In papers acknowledging the proceedings, Gallagher replied “Yes” when asked if he admitted the alleged adultery and said he did not intend to defend the case. The judge held in the decree-nisi document that Ms Appleton had “sufficiently proved” the contents of her petition and “is entitled to a decree of divorce”. Ms is currently on tour in the UK with the reformed All Saints group.

funds can be taken as a lump sum, regardless of triviality limit: now three funds up to a maximum £10,000 each. A number of the remaining changes are still subject to consultation and, indeed, legislation in the Finance Act 2015, immediately ahead of next year’s UK General Election, which in itself creates further uncertainty. But the main announcement was that from April 2015 you would be allowed the cash in all of your UK private pensions. Please note this doesn’t and will not include final salary or government pension and, at the moment, QROPS. However what has

been glossed over is that if you cash in your pension you will be taxed, up to 45%. Adeje’s Easter Passion Adeje’s Easter Week programme, which starts today (Friday of the Sorrows) is a busy liturgical one with a host of parallel cultural activities organised by the Council. The processions are a chance for the public to appreciate some of the town’s most sacred images, many of them artistically excellent, and many restored in the last 15 years under the Council’s Heritage and Conservation Training programme. Adeje Culture Councillor Nayra Medina Bethencourt said: “Adeje’s Easter Week is a very important part of the borough’s cultural calendar. “Many of the people who live here take part in acts and events during the celebrations and, above all, those participating in the live representation of The Passion. “There are also group activities which, year after year, see distinct groups and collectives taking part in liturgical events, among them the Hermandad del Santísimo, the Porteadores de

la Virgen and the Mujeres Adejeras con la Virgen. “We also have the municipal band and groups from the borough’s school of dance and music, alongside neighbourhood associations and other groups.” The Culture Councillor added: “While the council respects the needs of many Adeje citizens, we know that not everyone celebrates this particular festival. “We will work to avoid too many changes or hold-ups on public streets, traffic diversions, etc. We will also have a special security detail in place, made up of the Local Police and the Civil Protection Brigade throughout the Easter events.” The most important events during the celebrations take place on Monday (14th April) Thursday (17th) and Friday (18th). On Monday, one procession with a high turn-out takes place, with many official bodies taking part, such as the Local and National

police, the Guardia Civil, the Civil Protection Unit and the Voluntary Fire Brigade. It starts from the La Viña hermitage in La Postura, with people carrying impressive images of the Captured Christ and Our Lady of Hope, carved in cedar by one of the most important artists of the day, Álvarez Duarte. Maundy Thursday (17th) will see the Mandato procession in the Calle Grande, considered one of the most solemn acts in the Easter schedule, attended by all of the local authorities, including the Mayor, councillors, members of the security forces and representatives of the borough’s associations and other groups. During the procession, a representation of the Crucified Christ by the 18th Century Canarian school, attributed to Alonso de Raya, and the carvings of the Last Supper and the Virgin of Hope, will be carried through the main street. Other solemn events include the Sacred Burial and the Silent, candlelit procession, which take place tonight (Friday) at 7pm and 11pm respectively. This morning, thousands of visitors will, traditionally, come to Adeje to witness the street theatre representation of The Passion of Jesus Christ, with hundreds of Adeje residents taking part. This will be held in the Calle Grande, starting at noon, and will be broadcast live nationally, by Channel 2 TVE. Apart from these events, there is a daily agenda of the celebrations, with

processions, liturgical events, and much more besides. Three neighbourhoods will host processions on the Friday of Sorrows, specifically Tijoco-La Hoya, Fañabé and the church of Santa Úrsula in Adeje town centre Tomorrow night (Saturday), a special Way of the Cross is celebrated, from the town cemetery to the church, starting at 10pm. And on Sunday (Palm Sunday), Armeñime’s

procession begins at 10am, with the procession and blessing, followed by the parishes of Santa Úrsula and TijocoLa Hoya at noon, Fañabé at 12.30pm. And, from 7pm in Los Olivos, the day’s events come to a close with one of the most heartfelt processions of the day - the Oration of Our Lord in the Garden of Gethsemane, from the Las Nieves hermitage. MONDAY was a terribly sad news day. But as day turned to night, anyone would think I was the worst human being on the face of the earth.

Early that afternoon, news was breaking in the UK that two British woman drowned off the coast of Tenerife. As someone who has lived there, my ears pricked up and I wanted to know the full details. Rolling news channels that you can flick on any time of the day are, to me, no longer needed. In the age of social media, with everyone seemingly a registered user of Facebook and Twitter, it is extremely easy to find out details before the media outlets. I had full knowledge of the tragic circumstances surrounding this story within five minutes, largely down to Oasis Fm, Canarian Weekly and expats throughout the Island. It took at least another hour for it to be known in the UK. As you’ve read on page 3, Uma Ramalingam, 42, and her relative, Barathi Ravikumar, 39, were on holiday in the popular tourist resort of Playa

It’s troll time again

Paraiso, in the southwest of the Island, to mark the beginning of the Easter holidays when disaster struck on Sunday night. Witnesses said the two women rushed into the ocean to rescue the two children, aged 10 and 14, but quickly got into difficulties near a rocky outcrop.

Horrified onlookers managed to rescue the children and a third woman was winched from the sea by helicopter. But they were unable to save the two women. Any parent, me included, with any decency and intelligence as a human being, must have felt heartbroken.

It was all I could think about that day. Putting myself in that situation, I would not have hesitated for one moment. Then, on the six o’clock news that evening, the story broke that Peaches Geldof, daughter of Bob, had been found dead in her house. Like everyone else, whenever you hear of the death of a “celebrity” there’s a sharp intake of breath and the words, “No, you’re joking,” comes out of our mouths. So you listen to the story and think it’s so sad. A 25-year-old woman and mother of two children dies. But then, after an hour, you’d have thought that story was the only thing that had happened that day. Nothing else happened that day, according to Sky, the BBC and the main ITV bulletins. The story of the two British women was given a 30-second slot in between news presenters asking other “celebrities” for their thoughts on the death of Peaches. At that very moment I saw red, and I took to Facebook and Twitter to see if there was any more news on the two women. As I scoured through page after page, the tributes to Ms Gel-

dof were endless. All of which started with “RIP” and ended with the words, “leaving two children behind. So sad”. And it is. It’s a heartbreaking story. But I wanted to see some kind of tribute to the ladies in Tenerife. The good people of the Island again showed their hearts by persisting with their tributes. But for anyone else in the UK - nothing! So I wrote on my Facebook page: “Just to balance it all up, two British woman drowned yesterday in Tenerife trying to save their kids. But they didn’t write a blog, design clothing, did a bit on This Morning or have famous parents! No, none of that. They simply jumped in the sea to save their kids. Celebrity vs heroic mothers.” That opened the floodgates. I was called uncaring, arrogant, bighead, etc. You name it, I was called it. My Twitter page exploded. Obviously I cannot repeat the names that were fired in my direction in this newspaper. But through all that, I was proved right. Sadly, no-

body seemed to care. The point is that the death of Peaches, as yet unexplained, was more important to those on social media; the death of a celebrity they never met but had read about or saw on television, proves that celebrity culture is the thing foremost in the minds of most people. And the TV channels are not doing their jobs. I was being vilified because of their guilt. I’m still taking hate messages from people all over the world. I’m big enough to not let it annoy me, and intelligent enough to block every one of these idiots of whom I would otherwise never have heard! Death is a horrible thing, and writing about it is not the thing I wish to report in this column. It’s only ever my opinion, so here is my penny’s worth for this week. The death of a young woman leaving two kids, celebrity or not, is sad. The deaths of two women who gave their lives trying to save their children, deserves the respect and our hearts - just like every other hero does.

Cabildo-owned casinos endure 3m-euro deficit WHILE the future of Tenerife casino workers hangs in the balance, two of the Island’s three casinos posted losses of three million euros last year.

Only the Las Americas made a profit, according to a document leaked to the Press this week. The document was presented by Cabildo technicians to the Council of Insular Government on Monday. The overall deficit

for the year stands at 2,944,224 euros - an increase in losses against 2012 figures.. The Government’s decision to sell off the casinos, starting with the one in Las Americas, is said to be directly related to the losses mounting up. Tenders are expected to be invited soon, and are also expected to be linked to the launch of a massive tourism project for the area. Yet this particular casino posted a 17,601euro profit against the 133,033-euro plus secured in 2012.

Puerto de la Cruz’s Casino Taoro accumulated the heaviest losses, closing 2013 with a 2.6m-euro deficit, and 2012 with 2.2m losses. Santa Cruz Casino suffered losses of 338,000 euros in 2013, against the 2012’s 705,000-euro deficit. The document clearly shows that the Casino Group is suffering massive losses. And that directly affects the Cabildo’s financial position because it is the sole shareholder of the entities. All three casinos were

undergoing plans for restructuring, and only the casino in Playa de las Americas had fulfilled its brief. Casino Taoro’s “situation” ended up worse than before the plans were implemented. The accumulated debt of the group over the past few years amounts to 15 million Euros, which, says the Cabildo, puts it at risk and warns of “possible repercussions” if the sale of the casinos are not pushed through. Meanwhile, 140 workers from the three ca-

sinos, along with union representatives, met on Monday, when accusations were made about the Cabildo favouring a private company with regards to the proposed sale of the Las Americas business.. Union representatives want to know why a particular company has already been linked with the purchase when the first phase of negotiations has yet to be completed. Workers also argue that the Las Americas casino is profitable, and, therefore, selling it off to

save money is not a viable proposition. Gustavo Santana, general secretary of the General Workers’ Union (UGT), said: “There is no legal or economic reason for selling that casino.” And Manuel Fitas, secretary of the Canaries’ Federation of Commerce, Catering and Tourism of the Workers’ Commission (CCOO), spoke of a large tourism project in the South. “Some promoters have expressed an interest in adding a casino to their project,” he said.

Thousands of club and fun runners will also take to London’s streets, each with their own personal story and objective, some trying to set a new personal best, others trying to raise money for various charities and good causes. The BBC’s team of reporters will be positioned across the course to tell some of those remarkable stories and feats of achievement. The action also includes the women’s elite race and the men’s and women’s wheelchair races. Jonathan Edwards presents the coverage with Steve Cram leading the commentary alongside Brendan Foster, Paula Radcliffe and Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson.

The 38th Olivier Awards with MasterCard takes place on Sunday 13th April at the Royal Opera House, with highlights broadcast on exclusively on ITV. The Awards is the starriest night in theatre and is a wonderful chance to celebrate the very best in terms of talent both on-stage and off. Two international stage and screen stars will host the proceedings for this glittering event: Gemma Arterton, announced to star this coming autumn in the new musical Made In Dagenham and Stephen Mangan, appearing on stage in Olivier nominated comedy Jeeves & Wooster In Perfect Nonsense. The voiceover will be provided by Olivier Award winner Julie Walters. Meanwhile, Myleene Klass will present on the outside ITV stage, which will host performances from some of the West End’s most popular musicals, including Wicked and Les Miserables. Myleene said “Hosting on ITV’s outside stage is like getting the best seat at some of the West End’s biggest shows. I started out in theatre and have always loved it so it’s a real honour to be involved in the industry’s most prestigious awards.” Citation readers on the night include Michael Ball, Kristin Davis, Nigel Harman, Gok Wan, Lesley Sharpe and Samantha Barks. In addition, to celebrate 15 years of the hit show MAMMA MIA!, ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus will be reuniting to appear with the current London MAMMA MIA! company in the awards’ grand finale.

Endeavour ITV1, 20.00 November 1966. Oxford’s dreaming spires darken as Bonfire Night beckons. A housewife, Mrs Vivienne Haldane, found choked to death in her own home marks the third strangling in a month, setting Oxford City Police on edge. Pulled tight around the victim’s throat - a silk black stocking. Though the victims bear little relation to one another beyond the superficial, DC Endeavour Morse bridges the divide: the three victims are married women, all of whom have been found shorn of their wedding rings. As a city-wide manhunt for a multiple murderer brews, Endeavour unearths a private diary kept hidden by Mrs Haldane, detailing periodic infidelities with an anonymous ‘Mr X’. Her husband, a bloated mathematician, offers precious little information. But the specificity of the murderous stocking - a high-line brand, ‘Le Minou Noir’ - opens a new avenue of investigation. Endeavour traces the garment’s provenance to Burridges, an innocuous department store, save for being the stocking’s sole supplier across Oxford. As its denizens fall under suspicion, the investigation draws out painful memories for DI Fred Thursday, for whom a chance encounter with shopgirl Luisa Armstrong rouses reminiscences of wartime strife and unbidden promises.

Twelve months ago, Australia’s Adam Scott overcame his 2012 demons to claim the green jacket for the first time in a play-off with 2009 champion Angel Cabrera, and with it become the first Australian to claim the Masters title. Scott held his nerve to shoot a final round 69, while many of his rivals faltered. He holed a 15-foot birdie putt to see off Cabrera at the second extra hole in fading light, securing his maiden major title in dramatic circumstances. Undeniable ITV1, 21.00 In spite of irrefutable evidence, Jane remains convinced that Andrew is guilty. So, when Andrew is reinstated at the hospital where he works as a consultant oncologist, she assaults him publicly at the hospital. Andrew’s daughter and lawyer, Emma applies for a restraining order against Jane. Jane’s life begins to unravel as her family become increasingly concerned about her obsession with Andrew. And when Ali Hall, her loyal ally, is relieved of the investigation it looks as though all hope is lost. However, Jane remains defiant and does her own digging into Andrew’s past. When she tracks down the address for Andrew’s former wife, Isobel she decides to pay her a visit. Although Isobel isn’t at home, her new husband gives Jane damning information. As Ali is leaving the station she gets a phone call from a former student nurse who had dealings with Andrew Rawlins many years before. It’s enough for Jane to persuade Ali Hall to investigate Andrew’s former professional history as a young doctor. The profile of a violent, abusive and self-obsessed fantasist starts to emerge. Following a confrontation between Emma and Jane, Emma is compelled to visit her estranged mother and learn about the past. Isobel is a former doctor and now hopeless alcoholic, but could she hold the key to the truth?

Angler Jeremy Wade investigates the story of a man who had his face ripped off in a remote Bolivian river, leading to a confrontation with one of his oldest adversaries. Jeremy’s initial thought is that it was the work of piranhas, but they rarely attack unless threatened in some way. A chat with the surgeon who performed the post-mortem on the victim changes his mind. Then an interview with someone who witnessed the attack reveals it was a Red Bellied Piranha - but why the change in the creature’s behaviour? Is there another predator in the river system threatening the piranhas?

The cookery competition continues with the fourth week of heats. First, the contestants are asked to cook their Calling Card, a practiced dish that represents who they are as a cook and showcases their talent. Then it is time for the Invention Test, where the contestants are given the choice of two sealed boxes of ingredients - one sweet and one savoury. The contestants then have just one hour to cook a dish good enough to keep them in the competition. For the four remaining cooks’ final challenge, they have to cook an impressive menu for some very special guests - 2009 MasterChef Champion Mat Follas and previous finalists Tom Rennolds and Daksha Mistry.

The Walton Sextuplets celebrate their 30th birthday in this new one off documentary. In an hour long special we meet the six girls Hannah, Luci, Jennie, Ruth, Kate and Sarah as they reach this milestone birthday and take a special trip of a lifetime to New York with their parents Janet and Graham - their first holiday together for nearly ten years. The Waltons, from Wallasey, are the world’s only surviving all female sextuplets and have attracted headlines from the moment they were born. ITV has followed the girls throughout their lives and in this brand new programme we get an insight into the girls’ lives as they approach 30. We also hear Janet and Graham’s extraordinary journey from trying to conceive to being told they were having sextuplets and through archive footage we see the girls over the years as babies, toddlers and teenagers. The girls are now almost the same age Janet was when she fell pregnant and we hear the girls talking about the prospect of having families of their own.

In Lincoln, we meet the team dealing with parking in an increasingly busy city centre. Residents in a quiet Sussex village take direct action to stop commuters to London from parking on their road, which happens to be right next to the station. And in Devon, a businessman has developed a talking parking ticket.

By Jamie Droo WHEN it comes to being on stage, it is usually a calling and not a job. Like nursing being an entertainer is something that is in the blood.

As a solo artiste it can be a very exciting life, but to share that love and excitement with another artiste is an even better feeling. There have been some fabulous duos here in Tenerife over the years - and some still remain and continue to succeed. The first ingredient for an entertainment duo, whether they are musical instrumentalists, vocal harmonisers or comedians, is chemistry. If you get lucky and the chemistry is there from the beginning, then you’ll have an easy ride - as long as it’s also backed up by talent. There is something magical about watching more than one person perform on stage. Duos seem to gain more respect a lot quicker than a solo artiste would from an audience and those who don’t? Well, they don’t last very long on this circuit, where you are only as good as your last gig. Until recently, the majority of duos working in Tenerife have been resi-

TWO’S COMPANY! dent in one venue. This has helped establish them and the bar they perform in. No matter whether you are solo or a duo, consistency breeds custom, and people love to come back to Tenerife to recreate the memories made on their last visit. There are so many duos like this that I could write about this week, but I would like to focus on one. When it comes to consistency, Innuendo have to be recognised as one of the hardest-working duos on the Island. This is not just for what they do on stage but, equally, what happens off-stage as they market their venue and Innuendo as a product. Les and Donna have been working together for almost 20 years in Tenerife, and they have always put in so much effort in creating a viable brand with Innuendo. They were quick to exploit social networks and were one of the first, if not the first, to have their own website which did more than just give information. Les, a guitarist from Leicester, is also a “Tech Head” and totally into his gadgets. He always has the best of everything when it comes to equipment. The pair were also the first on the Island to stream their performances via their website, so that people all over the world could log on and reminisce of their time in Tenerife. And also for loved ones

back home to see their family and friends enjoying themselves on holiday. For years, Les and Donna have been uploading photographs of the nights at their resident venue, and they now have a database of tens of thousands of pictures, all organised

in date order and available for viewing at www. innuendotenerife.com About five years ago, they introduced a function on their live stream, which allowed the viewer to buy the artiste a drink. This, I believe, is a facility unique to them. Along with other

hooks and features, Innuendo have amassed a huge fan base from all parts of the globe. They have a chemistry on stage which audiences love - and keep returning to see. For many years, Les and Donna were well known for working in Puerto Colon and put-

ting on some of the best shows on the Island. You can now find Innuendo performing every night at Crazy Las Vegas Bar, along the Fañabe Promenade. It can be so challenging being partners in life as well as partners on stage, and also maintaining the presence they have online and as a duo when performing live. The couple cover all kinds of music and have an international appeal. Alongside their work with Innuendo, they have produced some excellent work for other artistes. As I have mentioned all the latest gadgetry is set up in the Innuendo studio, and they have made countless posters for many artistes. Not only static publicity but video publicity is also on the menu. Back in 2005, Innuendo created a video of my show at The Moonlight Bar, using four cameras and capturing both the delivery and reaction to comedy. Although technology has moved on somewhat in the field of video production, I still use that video as part of my own publicity pack. Innuendo are so talented. They are experts in maintaining a consistent entertainment programme and also in promoting themselves online the way they do. The dynamic they bring to a venue is unique to them, and that venue gets so much more than just a resident duo for its evening entertainment.

Fun in Fañabe!

THE phrase “Fun Pub” emerged in the late Eighties and early Nineties and described a place where entertainment came at you from all angles. Almost a year ago the two Fun Pubs in Fanabe, The First & Last and Ye Olde Ocean, were taken over by an English family. They have been in business here for many years and have already enjoyed success running some of the larger bars in Tenerife. The new manage-

ment team are looking forward to the summer and have already seen some really busy nights. The entertainment programme in both bars has been designed not to clash, and offers variety in abundance. Whether you like a tribute artiste, live bands, vocal groups and duos, or just enjoy getting up on the karaoke, these bars have a fine selection, featuring the best artistes on the Island performing every night at 11pm.

Compere Vinnie Love, who holds the keys to the stage in The First & Last, can be seen from 9.30pm every night. I have the pleasure of occupying the residency at Ye Olde Ocean as compere, and I love it there. It reminds me of my time at The Full Monty bar before, sadly, it closed its doors. The bar’s atmosphere alone was buzzing, and that’s just how the Fañabe fun pubs make you feel.

HEAT 6: Tenerife Loves Karaoke at Springers Bar

Chloe survives - by a mile! OVER the years, Springers Bar has always hosted a successful Tenerife Loves Karaoke heat – and last Friday was no exception.

Eddie Marzella, business partner and resident compere at Springers, has to be congratulated for the way he promotes this event. His build-up started around St Patrick’s Day, three weeks ago. Every night, Eddie let everyone know that the TLK tour bus was coming to town, And he encouraged the best of his regular karaoke singers to enter at Springers - and nowhere else! Something tells us that Eddie wants Springers to produce a Grand Final winner. As a result of Eddie’s industry, Springers produced the most pre-registered number of contestants so far in this year’s event. The judging panel was a little different this week as regular judges John Zammit and Michelle Phillips were absent from the table, but not from the bar! This time they were there to enjoy the show. Flying the Oasis Fm flag instead were Jo and Ange, with compere Eddie and regular customer Mike representing

also occupied! Some brilliant songs were performed and the judges and audience were all treated to that “wow” factor. The top three after round one were regular competitor Gary (Shaggy) Thomson, 2011 grand finalist Alex and 17-year-old Chloe Guy. The eventual winner by a clear margin was Chloe, who sang a beautiful version of Leah McFall’s I Will Survive (the original hit was performed by Gloria Gaynor) and followed it up in the sing-off with Emeli Sande’s Read All About It. Alex came second, and Gary took home his second third-place TLK trophy to add to his other two runner-up trophies. Confused? So were we! But we look forward to the next heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke, which takes place tonight

Vegas plants a winner! By Margaret Tully I CAN’T believe how quickly this year is flying by. It is only weeks until May, which is the start of the hot season for plants.

I have started my preparations by washing lots of 3in pots in preparation for transplanting my seedlings. As I have mentioned previously, I have a tiny plant room, covered in the fabric used at the banana plantations, which has a plastic window and a door. I use this for my seedsowing and pottingon, and I have started some seeds already as it maintains a regular temperature and I can get a head start. As the year hots up and no more seed-sowing goes on, I use it for tomatoes, cucumber and pepper plants. It offers a great deal of shelter from the vicious winds. Once you have washed your pots in a mild soap solution and rinsed thoroughly, make sure they are dry and store in a dry, dust-free place until you use them. By washing them and storing them, you will have clean, germ-free pots for use when needed. When the hot season really takes off, seedlings generally germinate quicker and you can find yourself with a lot of seeds ready at the same time. This is when you must be prepared for a massive commitment to your plants.

removed when they have gone over to prevent disease. You can grow all the sun-loving fruit and veg in pots, so don’t be put off by thinking you need acres of earth to grow some edibles. As you know, I like to see plants growing in their natural habitat, so I went off to Las Vegas this weekend. Don’t panic, it was Tenerife’s own Las Vegas - a lovely little village a few kilometres from Chimiche/El Rio. I have been there before and never tire of looking at the flora and fauna on offer.

There were lots of Echium simplex growing wild. This is commonly known as White Viper’s Bugloss, the vernacular name being Taginaste. The bees were buzzing busily around its tall stems of white flowers because they are a rich source of nectar. This Echium is very similar to the Taginaste Rojo (Echium wildpretii). But, as the Spanish name suggests, the flowers on this one are red and the whole plant grows more vigorously. Echium wildpretii grows higher up, near to and in Teide National Park. I took lots of photos of this echium the last time I was there as it is an iconic image, used in many postcards. In La Palma, they have Echium wildpretii sub. Trichosiphon, which has pink flowers. I haven’t grown any of the above Echiums but, by accident, I have grown the Viper’s Bugloss (Echium vulgare). Bugloss means oxtongued, which describes its spiny/hairy, tongue-shaped leaves. I must have carried the plant or its seeds on the soles of my shoes the last time I went to Las Vegas, because it ended up seeding itself in my garden. It doesn’t look as impressive as other Echiums, but the colour of its deep-purple flowers, which start out as

a deep red, are amazing - and it also attracts bees. Another plant I saw was the Pericallis Lanata, previously known as a Senecio and acknowledged in the Canaries as a Palomera. It took my breath away at times as it clung in clumps to rocks and hung high above me like a purple waterfall. It was in abundance, with a delicate, daisylike flower, and is actually from the Asteraceae family. The petals are anything from pink to purple, with white near the centre. They have five, notched green leaves, which are also purple on the underside. It’s a fantastic plant

to grow in a dry, shady corner of your garden, either in a pot or in the ground, or on your patio. But make sure you don’t over-water - give them free-draining, slightly-acidic soil and they will thrive. There are lots of hybrids on the market now, generally known as Senetti. It’s a plant to consider for next year: sow in the cold season (Oct) for a show in April-June. In the gardens on the way back down to the car from Las Vegas, there were fruit trees laden with Nisperos (Loquats) and Seville Oranges, but why don’t they pick them? I would happily take them off their hands!

SOW IT… GROW IT… TASTE IT Hot and spicy Potato Wedges

THIS week will not be a Sow it, Grow it, Taste it recipe. Instead, it will be a “What can I make to eat after a four-hour walk up the hot mountains”? Ingredients *Potatoes *Pimiento pepper powder *Oil *Sprig of fresh Rosemary Method *Scrub potatoes clean, leaving some of the skin on them *Cut them into wedges and wash, but do not dry *Roll wedges in a plate full of pimiento pepper powder

*Sprinkle with chopped Rosemary and let wedges dry *Heat some oil (enough to cover wedges) in a deep pan (a wok is excellent) *Once the oil is very hot, add in the wedges a few at a time *Make sure they are cooked thoroughly until fluffy inside *Keep adding raw wedges as you remove the ones which are cooked to a clean plate, using kitchen paper, to allow them to drain *Serve with a dollop of tomato sauce or mayonnaise on the side

Drugs not a solution for hyperactive kids

ATTENTION deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is not a real disease, according to a leading neuroscientist.

Dr Bruce Perry, an acknowledged worldwide expert in child trauma, believes anyone would fit at least two of the criteria for being diagnosed with ADHD at any time - and says the disorder is “best thought of as a description”. Prescriptions for stimulant drugs such as Ritalin have increased twofold for children and adolescents in the UK with ADHD, and fourfold in adults between 2003 and 2008. Dr Perry, a senior fellow of the ChildTrauma Academy in Houston, Texas, was speaking ahead of his meeting last week with Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith and Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

He is concerned that children are being diagnosed with ADHD - despite, in his opinion, it being a label describing symptoms of various physiological problems only. He told The Observer: “We are very immature in our current evolution in giving diagnoses. One hundred years ago, someone would

are young, their rewards systems change … taking a medication influences systems in ways we don’t always understand. “The psycho/stimulant drugs given to children are believed to stimulate a part of the brain that varies behavioural and mental reactions.” Around 3-7% of children, or 400,000, are

said to have ADHD in Britain, with many being prescribed drugs to try to improve their concentration at school. The NHS Choices website describes the disorder as being “a group of behavioural symptoms that include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness”. Common symptoms include a short attention span, restlessness or constant fidgeting and being easily distracted, says the Health Service. Many people with ADHD also have learning difficulties and other problems such as sleep disorders. The condition is normally diagnosed between the ages of three to seven. Potential risk factors include smoking, alcohol or drug abuse during pregnancy, premature birth, and simply being male. Dr Perry was guest speaker at last week’s Early Intervention Foundation (EIF) ScienceSeries event in London. And Labour

MP Graham Allen, the EIF chairman, calls him the “best in his field”. In January, MailOnline reported paediatric neurologist Dr Richard Saul’s comments that ADHD “simply doesn’t exist” and was being used to mask less-serious problems. In his own practice, Chicago-based Dr Saul unpicked cases such as a young girl who was unruly in school. It transpired that she couldn’t see the blackboard and simply needed glasses. He wrote a Daily Mail article last month, claiming the symptoms of ADHD could have routine causes which are ignored because of a knee-jerk diagnosis. A group of researchers from Australia and the Netherlands, echoing Dr Saul’s views, said last November that the diagnosis of ADHD may have become too broad. The EIF was officially launched by Prime Minister David Cameron at 10 Downing Street a year ago, with full crossparty support.

No more heart aches? A NEW heart drug, which has no side-effects, could be used as a powerful alternative to statins.

Doctors in America are confident that the new treatment, not yet licensed, has the potential to help save

millions of lives worldwide. Statins reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes by lowering levels of LDL, known as “bad” cholesterol. But some users suffer from side-effects. Several companies are developing these drugs, and three studies of Amgen’s ver-

sion of this treatment, known as evolocumab, found it lowered LDL by 55-66%, compared with others who took a fake drug. Research into evolocumab, revealed at the American College of Cardiology’s scientific meeting in Washington over the weekend, showed it outperformed

other cholesterol medicines significantly. Dr Michael Koren, one of the lead investigators on two of the studies, said: “In terms of the LDL lowering, these drugs are as good, or better, than anything we have.” The drug has been shown to reduce cholesterol, but doctors

want further evidence to prove it could help prevent heart attacks and deaths, as has been shown with statins. However, as with most new drugs, there are drawbacks because the new medication is likely to be far more expensive than statins - and it is administered through injections rather than

pills. Nevertheless, Dr Koren said his team, from Jacksonville Centre for Clinical Research in Florida, were “very, very pleased” with how well patients accepted the jabs. Overall safety “is very, very encouraging,” said Dr Scott Wasserman, Amgen’s executive medical director.

The most talkedabout has been the Moschino Fashion House and its take on the fast-food brand McDonald’s. It has become so popular that celebrities such as Katy Perry and Rita Orla have been spotted wearing it. But it has caused controversy with McDonald’s employees. Staff have viewed the fashions first seen at the Milan Fashion Week as “mocking.” Employee Mia Brussendorff said: “There is nothing fashionable about working at McDonald’s,” and she went on to say that they were paid just the minimum wage. “People paying up to 1,000 dollars for an item inspired by our uniform are mocking us,” she added. Jeremy Scott, who designed the collection, also took inspiration from Cheeto’s, Hershey’s and Fruit Loops in his homage to icons from the Nineties. Moschino are not the only designers to have been inspired by food. In 2004, Jean Paul Gaultier created a collection of clothes, made from bread and aptly named “Pan Couture”. In 2009, milliner Judy

Bentinck designed the “flake hat” for Ascot, which included edible chocolate for racegoers to sample. The most memorable would probably be Lady Gaga’s meat dress, which she wore in 2010 to the MTV music video awards. My own favourite is the annual catwalk for the Salon du Chocolat, held in Paris every season. And I’m sure I don’t need to tell you what the clothes are made of for that. Jeremy Scott, when

Cabildo culinary season underway TENERIFE Cabildo always does an excellent job of promoting local produce, and its annual “sampling” season is underway.

Over the next few months, there will be 14 gastronomic events in different municipalities, showcasing Tenerife food and drink to tourists and Islanders. This week, Icod de los Vinos had the honour of getting the season underway with its popular rabbit condumio. Until the end of the month, local restaurants will create their own signature dishes, all based on the Icod tradition of rabbit and potatoes! This weekend Los Cristianos has a mini tasting event and later this month, Vilaflor has its white potato show-

case. Granadilla’s festival next month will be devoted to “oily fish” dishes, while July’s Los Realejos gastronomic show is another feast for potato protagonists! At the end of the summer, Adeje’s September food festival combines

cheese, honey and corn dishes, although maybe not on the same plate! Santa Cruz follows, offering food lovers potato products in a range of formats, including the special Canarian sweet potato. The last quarter of 2014 begins in October in Puerto de la Cruz, with the popular fish festival teaming up with a banana showcase. Guimaras will focus on sweet potato, Arico (honey), Candelaria (sweet potato), La Matanza de Acentejo (apple) and Guia de Isora (almonds and honey) to complete a busy month of fayres. November begins with events returning to Guia de Isora before, Arafo (sweet potato and chestnut) and, finally, Acentejo (chestnuts) bring us around to Christmas time. These festivals and gastronomic routes are co-organised by the various participating councils and co-ordinated by Tourism Tenerife. The colourful events give the local produce a real platform and are always well attended. There are numerous competitions during each festival, producing a friendly, but very real rivalry between producers and restaurants. In 2013, over 50 food companies and producers took part - and more than 300 restaurants entered dishes for competition.

An artistic dining experience

WE had the opportunity this week of sampling a completely different style of eatery in the South of Tenerife.

Even though GastroBar La Kocina, in El Camison, Las Americas, has been open for about a year, it is still a relative newcomer to the local restaurant scene. Although the outside, candle-lit terrace looked lovely, we chose to sit inside in a dining area I would describe as modern with an Art Deco flair. The menu is based on classic dishes from mainland Spain, and has a range of speci-

alities from Bilbao and the Basque country of Northern Spain. We were treated to their “Special Sharing menu”, from which we were invited to try small portions (known as raciones - a bit bigger than tapas) of their best dishes. This Sharing menu is also available to the public and can be customised to suit your taste. As we waited for our first course we sipped on a lovely glass of red Ribero Del Duero wine, Canta Perdices, which was recommended by Paco, the owner himself. To start, we were brought Marinated Salmon, topped with a Mango Vinaigrette and Foie “Micuit” with a Fig

marmalade served with Olive oil-drizzled crispbreads on a cool slate platter. The salmon was fresh and fruity and the Pate rich and smooth. The next course to share was a classic Warm Goat’s cheese salad, with raspberry vinaigrette - you can never go wrong with that! This was served alongside homemade Iberian ham croquettes, on a dab of Ali oli. A range of other “different” salads is also available. The next dish out was something slightly different, by the name of Marmitako. It was a Traditional Basque Speciality of Fresh Tuna chunks (not from a tin) cooked in a stew of potatoes, peppers

and onions. Hearty and full of flavour but, in all probability, it would not have been a first choice for me. But after trying it, I was hooked and would definitely order it again. Even though we were starting to feel a bit full, there were still another couple of dishes to tackle: Seabass Fillets topped with a wild mushroom sauce and lightly-battered Cod Tempura with a wholegrain mustard-andhoney dipping sauce. Both light, and both delicious! Finally, it was time for desserts: warm, luxurious Chocolate Brownie, topped with a Strawberry coulis and dairy ice-cream on the side. Safe to say, we were totally stuffed by the end of it. Although our menu of the evening was more fish-orientated, La Kocina offer some lovely meat dishes, such as Crunchy Chicken, Duck, Veal, and much more. One of the interesting features about this restaurant is that they have a different exhibition on every month from range of artists, so you have the option of admiring their work while you eat. And you can even take a painting home with you if anything particu-

larly catches your eye. They’re open for lunch or dinner, serving their five-star quality food at reasonable prices. But,

By Monica Dyson MY mother never visited a gym in her life, or knew anything about the Durkan or Atkins diets. Slimming clubs were certainly not an option for her; nor classes in Zumba or Pilates. Yet she was slim and fit. It seems that women 60 years ago in the UK managed to burn up more calories than any woman does today. Women in 1953 spent three hours each day doing the housework, an hour walking to and from the shops, an hour doing the shopping, traipsing from the butchers, bakers and greengrocers and doing this frequently during the week as they did not have a freezer or often a fridge. They would then spend another hour making the evening meal, sometimes also preparing lunch because many husbands came home in the middle of the day. They also burned up many more calories in walking their children to and from school, in a time when a family car was still a rarity. In fact, most things seemed to involve walking: to school, to church,

Even their recreational activities could be something energetic, like sequence dancing, although mothers could often be seen to be “wasting a bit of time”, having a cup of tea when they stopped work for a break to listen to Mrs Dales Diary. Modern women consume a lot more calories. This could well be attributed to junk food because, in years gone by, they were more likely to cook everything from scratch than rely on anything pre-packed. They’d also prepare what my mother would have called a “proper meal”, with plenty of fresh vegetables like swede, turnips, cabbages and sprouts. Today’s young women have a life of Riley compared with those days. They drive rather than walk; they have freezers, which means fewer shopping trips; and they use supermarkets, which have everything under one roof. It’s far cry from 50-60 years ago, but it does seem that modern technology has made women two-thirds less active than their forebears, which goes to show how important exercise is in the battle to maintain a healthy balance. Also surprisingly is that housewives then, while not having access to information like 50 Shades of Grey, enjoyed a much

more active sex life than women of today That’s because they did not have to divide their time between career, childcare and socialising. Women today have many more headaches! Recent studies also show how unfit and obese many of our children and grandchildren are. When we were children, we lived in the shadow of post-war rationing. Our mothers were obsessed with making sure we were well-nourished as foods, hitherto unavailable, started to come into the shops. It was a matter of pride that, when we were taken to the local clinic to obtain malt and a certain kind of concentrated orange juice - the taste of which our generation has never forgotten - we were seen to be well-fed. We ate things that would be totally frowned upon today. Cholesterol and its link to heart disease wasn’t something anyone thought about. It was all about filling your family as cheaply and as plentifully as possible. Some foods were said to “line your chest”

against winter infections. There would be no way you could have a joint of pork without cooking it in a large slab of lard, which made delicious pork dripping for sandwiches. Many foods were fried. Grilling wasn’t an option, and our mothers had a baking day when they would produce enough bread, cakes, tarts and buns to last the whole week. Meals would often finish off with a homemade pudding. Once sweets were no longer rationed, in 1953, there was no stopping us as we spent our pocket money on blackjacks, sherbet fountains, gob-stoppers or liquorice sticks. So, given the amount of “bad” food we ate as children, we should have been totally obese. But that wasn’t the case. It appears that child nutrition in the Fifties was superior to that of today’s children. We ate more bread and drank more milk, which gave us calcium and fibre. Red meat gave us iron, and there were few fizzy drinks or sweets. And we were used to

eating lots of vegetables because of the plentiful supply grown by father in the back garden. What’s more, we ate what was put in front of us. No multiple choices in those days! My family ate a lot of fish - one of the few foods not on ration during the War - which was good for fish-and-chip shops! So why was the Fifties’ child often in better shape than the child today? It’s not rocket science. When we were young, we were more active than today’s children are, and, like our mothers, we walked everywhere. We didn’t have a television to sit in front of, and no computers. When we weren’t at school, we couldn’t wait to get outside to play, sometimes disappearing for hours. We skipped, played tiggy and hopscotch and, of course, without the same concerns for our safety that parents have today. It is said that a return to some Fifties’ values would help in the fight against obesity in children here in the UK

and, I am sure, in many other countries. Like having meals as a family instead of at different times, and having the same meals as adults and not things like chicken nuggets. Like making sure children get enough sleep, and have no access to computers in their bedrooms - and limiting their television viewing. It’s very sad that so many of today’s activities cost money, such as swimming, gymnastics, football and rugby training, which prohibits many families from affording them for their children. It’s a sad fact that if the current trend towards overweight children continues, governments could face a serious health crisis, hospitals being unable to cope with the number of obesity-related illnesses in adulthood. The phrase “Life of Riley” originated from a letter home by an Irish/ American soldier in the US Army during the First World War. That’s how he described the camp’s good conditions and food.

He is 12 and has been with us for almost all his life. We think he deserves a nice place to enjoy his final years, but we fully understand that some people might be put off by any looming vet bills. Therefore, Solitario is on our list of “permanent foster dogs”, which means that we retain legal ownership of the dog and must meet his vet care needs.

Police lowdown on micro-chips! WITH the help of refuge staff last Friday, Arona’s local police learned how to read dogs’ micro-chips to enable them to trace the lost and abandoned animals.

This has again demonstrated the importance of having your pet micro-chipped, with the correct contact information, so they can be traced quickly and returned safely to you. Accion is holding a sponsored dog walk on Sunday (13th April), meeting at 10.30am by the Los Cristianos Harbour car park entrance. We will walk along the seafront to Las Americas and back, via The Patch and Parque Santiago. PHEW! WHAT A PHEV!

By Jav MITSUBISHI are genuinely thrilled with their new Outlander PHEV and they’re shouting it from the rooftops!

After years of relatively dull products and facelifts, the company believe they have hit the jackpot with the PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle). It is a fascinating proposition, which could even direct Mitsubishi towards a brand-new audience. The pure EV Drive mode means you could run the hybrid SUV entirely on electric power, and never need visit a petrol station again. And that is saying something! In a typically-buoyant launch presentation, Mitsubishi made multiple references to “game changing” and “no compromise”. But this time, they could be spot-on with their assessments. This machine has no need to shout aloud its green credentials because, apart from the charging cap on the offside rear wing, along with the obligatory Plug-in Hybrid EV badges, it’s very much business as usual on

the outside – and you’d never know the difference. Even by SUV standards, though, the Outlander could never be viewed as a looker. At best, it looks a little ungainly, but the worst aspect is that it seems dated, even a bit frumpy, and it’s just two years since it first appeared. But that may not matter. The PHEV is a car you’ll definitely buy with your head and not your heart. And if you’ve got a head for calculations, the Outlander PHEV could add up to be an attractive proposition, close to your heart.. It is powered by a smooth and refined 2.0-litre petrol engine, mated to a pair of electric motors mounted to the front and rear axles. These in turn are powered by a lithium-ion battery, which can be charged either at home

or, handily, while on the move. Select D on the single-speed transmission and, as with other hybrid models, the PHEV moves forward silently. Every drop of the car’s combined 249lb.ft of torque is instantly available, and that’s enough to propel the 1,810kg SUV to 62mph in a respectable 11.0 seconds. Out on the road, performance is relaxed almost leisurely, and it is possible to drive at speeds of up to 70mph solely on electric power. The PHEV, which offers three models, is said to be good for a range of 32.5 miles on electric power alone when charged fully. But this figure drops if you are heavy on the accelerator. On the plus side, the battery can be recharged via the petrol engine, or through various levels of regenerative braking.

And the Battery Charge Mode even allows for an 80% recharge when the car is stationary for 30 minutes. The actually drive is nothing to write home about, which in a way is quite a compliment because it is comfortable, with an infotainment system packed with a wealth of eco-driving support data and routeguidance information It would appear to be an easy car to live with, switching effortlessly between driving modes and offering light, if numb steering. Visibility is also good, and the person behind the wheel has a commanding driving position. Power is independently delivered to the front wheels (from the front electric motor and/or engine) and rear wheels (from the rear electric motor), with the system doing without any kind of mechanical connection.

And there is enough evidence to suggest that the PHEV will be more than adequate for the majority of buyers, with the Lock Mode and 1,500kg towing capacity making it a useful allrounder. There’s plenty of luggage capacity, but Mitsubishi can’t work miracles, so the electric tech sat beneath the boot floor means the PHEV is available as a five-seater only, which is a pity. That apart, it’s business as usual on the inside, which means a workmanlike interior that’s a little out of keeping with the cutting-edge technology found elsewhere. The PHEV range

starts with GX3h specification, offering 18-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, privacy glass, electric folding/heated mirrors, leather steering wheel, steering wheel audio controls and Bluetooth connectivity. The GX4h adds features such as leather seats, a seven-inch touchscreen, power tailgate, DAB digital radio, heated front seats and an electric sunroof to provide a more premium feel. All in all, Mitsubishi have virtually transformed a three-star SUV into a vehicle which is thoroughly merits four. The choice genuinely comes down to individual needs. Mitsubishi UK should be applauded for introducing such a bold pricing strategy – and where they lead, others must surely follow? Ford luxury that’s worth the wait FORD have revealed their luxurious S-Max Vignale concept during the current Milan Design Week, and it’s a goer!

It is the second model to wear the company’s proposed new rangetopping brand badge and should be available in the next two years. Like last year’s Mondeo Vignale concept, the company say of this S-Max: “It continues to expand its vision for a unique upscale product and ownership experience for European customers.”

The S-Max gets quilted, soft-touch, leather seats and a leather-

covered dashboard and centre console. The interior trim is described

as “woven texture embossed” aluminium, while the interior also

has tablet docking stations. On the outside are the hexagonal Vignale grille, 21-inch Vignale wheels, exterior aluminium trim and a unique paint finish called “Milano Grigio”. Ford confirm that a production version of the S-Max will arrive in European showrooms after the new Ford Mondeo Vignale reaches customers next year. No information about the likely pricing or engine options has yet been released. Ford’s designers say that much of the motor has been influenced by wider trends in furniture and fashion de-

sign. Stefan Lamm, Ford of Europe’s exterior design director, said: “We can see from the designs around us that modern luxury does not need to be loud. “Lighter tones and careful application of detailing have helped us deliver a level of sophistication Ford customers have not seen before.” Roelant de Waard, the company’s VicePresident for marketing, sales and service in Europe, adds: “Many customers are looking for a Ford that’s more exclusive than we currently offer in Europe.

Juanjo claimed another goal and Ricardo is our Steven Gerrard after slamming home another penalty. While the win was pleasing, what really caught the eye was the crowd. Over 11,500 were at the Heliodoro, and that figure will leap, match on match. When you consider that 16,000 watched some matches in a league below last season, you can see how this is going. The buzz is similar to the last time Tenerife

went up to La Liga, and there are more than a few omens. Manager Alvaro Cervera’s style is very similar to that of Jose Luis Oltra, and both of them had a knack of getting it right off the bench. Also, the way Tenerife have crept up the table, week in, week out, and hit form at the right time, is spooky. This Sunday’s match with Eibar is tough, and Tenerife’s record in the north east of Spain is rubbish.

That said, we have all been waiting for the bubble to burst. There is a world of difference between being an underdog and being a promotion favourite. They have just started to tire in matches and they were poor against Zaragoza last week. Tenerife should be confident of picking up something. Talking of collecting stuff, boy wonder Ayoze Perez won the league’s Player of the Month award. That should up his value a bit!

I’ll confess, I have a little soft spot for Eibar. I’ve enjoyed watching them over the last two seasons and they way the club is set up is brilliant. They are run as a proper business, don’t owe a penny and spend only what they can afford to spend. The town has a population of just 27,000, yet here they are on the verge of La Liga. They are full of local lads and play football the right way. And they like a row! My kinda team.

Adi Benson is looking good for being the highest-placed Oasis Fm DJ. He is in the top 10 and holds a 53-point lead over Chris Elkington. The real battle will be for second spot, with Roscoe just seven points adrift of Chris, which could make for some interesting office banter.

Harry wins Gaffers’ joust THEY say it isn’t over until the fat lady sings, but she is surely on the verge of bursting into song following this week’s Division One results. Last year’s winners Tenerife Hammers A, who have led for the majority of the season, came through a tough test against Inn the Pink A for a vital win. Pink A are a real handful at times and they took it to the Hammers early on. Only John knows how he didn’t beat Jambo in the opener, and they should have been ahead after the first set. From 2-2 it became 3-3 and when they nosed ahead at 4-3, the shock was on. But Hammers dug in and showed their class, reeling off four straight frames to get home a little cosier than the scoreline suggests. It was a title-winning performance, especially from the magnificent Wes. As Hammers celebrated a crucial win, nearest challengers Gaffers A were crying into their beer. They travelled to Los Abrigos to take on Phoenix Knights, in what turned out to be a great jousting contest. The game went to the wire and the two captains faced off in the decider. It was tasty, as

you would expect, and Harry got the better of Neil to give Knights the points and, effectively, end Gaffers’ title challenge. Gaffers are now 10 points behind the Hammers, and that is surely that. Dreamers A, looking for a fourth-placed finish, saw off The Peacocks in a spirited game. The Los Cristianos chaps are in fine form and they have two games in hand over Palms A, who are a point behind them. Palms faced off against what may have been their bogey team, Treehouse A, but they continued their own decent run with a strong 9-3 victory. Two other teams who had a lofty finish in mind through the first half of the season came together in the Los Abrigos derby. La Caña A held their nerve and grabbed the win against Phoenix Potters in a fiery encounter. At least it wasn’t a long journey home for the Phoenix old boys! At the bottom, Toscales A were soundly beat by Exiles A. But Terrace Bar A have done themselves a favour in their own battle against relegation by beating fellow-strugglers Tenerife Hammers C.

They had no problems getting a result against Bluebell A on Tuesday, and 24 hours later they accounted for Picasso’s in a catch-up game. Palms B have been kicked back to second

spot, but they will not be shaken off. They took on Gaffers B on Monday and eased to victory without any fuss. Exiles B are still holding on to third spot and were good value for their win against Shorty’s. But the battle for third is interesting. James Place are a point off, Bluebell B are not too far behind after seeing off Gaffers C and in-form Terrace Bar B are not out of it after yet another victory, this time over Tenerife Pool Tables. But Terrace B have played more games than the others, and though games in hand are not

Hair-raising Hamilton hits the heights again! TEAM-MATES Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg staged one of the greatest F1 battles of all on Sunday, transforming the Bahrain Grand Prix into the ultimate thriller. And Paddy Lowe, their Mercedes co-team boss, said after Hamilton’s brilliant defensive tactics earned him the title: “There’ll be no team orders from us. They can race against each other freely in every race - providing they don’t crash into one another.” He added: “Imagine if we’d imposed team

orders from lap two or something. What a terrible thing that would be for F1.” His Mercedes partner, Toto Wolff, said: “It’s great watching two drivers of that level racing fair and square.” Hamilton and Rosberg were side by side several times during the highoctane showdown, with each pushing the other to the limits of the track and beyond as they fought for victory. At one stage, it looked as though Hamilton had the race in the bag when he opened a

9.5sec gap. But the appearance of the safety car late on wiped that out and the 2008 world champion feared the worse. This stunning, all-action show, involving several wheel-to-wheel matchups between rival drivers throughout, added to the most awesome spectacle. Coincidentally, it came at the end of a weekend in which F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone and Ferrari president Luca Di Montezemolo had both criticised the new efficiencybased rules, saying they had produced a lack of

action. Wolff said: “The drivers delivered a megashow, and it doesn’t get any better advertising for F1, especially at a time when lots of people were talking F1 down. “You need the drivers to know that it is important not to risk the image of such a brand. We are representing a big brand and they need to know what to do. And they did it in a fantastic and spectacular way.” Mercedes have dominated the early stages of the new season, and Lowe said the team felt it

was their duty to let the drivers race without interference. “It is something we owe to ourselves, the sport and to the drivers. They are great drivers. They are professionals. You want to give them the opportunity to race.” The most intense laps of the clash between teammates, who have raced each other since their karting days as juniors, followed the late-race, safety-car period. Rosberg, on the faster, soft “option” tyres, definitely had the advan-

tage over his team-mate, running on the slower “prime” tyres. A delighted yet relieved Hamilton said: “We were both on the knife-edge, when the risk increases. “We were on the limit and I said to myself, ‘It’s going to take a miracle to hold him back because he has so much grip’.” But the English driver added: “It felt like one of the best-calculated races I’ve done - how I was using my power, how I was positioning my car. I don’t know how I did it but I did!”

PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW

By Adi Benson WITH Liverpool hosting Manchester City, the weekend fixtures could give us a clearer idea of who will be crowned Barclays Premier League Champions.

And it could also spell the end of Arsenal’s season if Wigan can pull of a shock in their FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. It is also the 25th Anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster, and kickoff times have been put back seven minutes so all clubs can observe a silence and offer respect to the 96 souls who, sadly, lost their lives on that fateful day. West Brom v Spurs (Saturday, 3.07pm) A win against fellow relegation strugglers Norwich last weekend saw the Baggies move five points clear of the danger zone, and, in my opinion, that will be enough. Spurs had a thumping victory against Sunderland on Monday. But in fairness, the opposition didn’t put up much of a fight. A European place is still a possibility for the North Londoners -and now that we know Tim Sherwood is going, maybe his team will play with a bit more freedom. Prediction: Away win Sunderland v Everton (Saturday, 3.07pm) Sunderland were awful on Monday, and I feel that their two Cup runs this season have cost them in the League. At one point, they had it in their own hands with games in hand. Now they are rock-bottom, seven points from safety, and they need teams above them to drop points. They also need to start winning! Everton are on a roll and, after battering Arsenal last time out, they have made sure the race for fourth spot will be interesting, to say the least. Prediction: Away win Stoke v Newcastle (Saturday, 3.07pm) Stoke are on target for their highest-ever Premier League finish, and

they will be relishing this game because victory can move them closer to their opponents. That will get them thinking of an even higher finish. Newcastle are going backwards, and it is pretty obvious that they’ve been on the beach for some time now. They have enough points to be safe with no challenge ahead, and their performances have spoken volumes about their mood. They definitely need to give their fans something to cheer over the last few games, but can they motivate themselves? Prediction: Home win Southampton v Cardiff (Saturday, 3.07pm) I honestly thought Southampton would have given Manchester City a more difficult game last week. But the loss of Jay Rodriguez with what looked like a serious injury, and two quick goals right before half-time, really knocked the wind out of their sails. This game should be a chance to get back to winning ways. Cardiff are not showing the spirit needed for a relegation battle. They were poor last weekend against a team from which they would have hoped to take points - and that just about summed their season up. For me, they are down already! Prediction: Home win Fulham v Norwich (Saturday, 3.07pm) Fulham gave themselves a glimmer of hope with a win against Villa, They are five points from safety and the

team above them is Norwich. And you have to fancy Penfold - sorry Felix Magath’s side - after they way they knuckled down at Villa. Norwich have got rid of Chris Hughton - but at this stage of the season, I am not sure how that is going to help. They need the new manager effect this weekend (well first-team coach, acting manager) and a loss would be a disaster. I tipped Norwich to go down at the start of the season and it’s looking a good call at the minute when you look at their run-in. They have not won away since Noah started chopping down trees, but that run has to end some time. Prediction: Away win C Palace v Aston Villa (Saturday, 3.07pm) Palace knew what they needed to do last weekend at Cardiff - and they didn’t disappoint their manager or fans. The performance was positive from the first whistle, and the belief of the players was paramount to the victory - a complete contrast to Cardiff’s attitude. A win here and other results going for them and they could move up to 12th in the table! I always thought Paul Lambert was a decent manager. He did a good job at Norwich and I felt for him last season as he struggled with a squad who were not his. Also, he had little to spend, but he kept them up. I expected more from Norwich this season, but they have been poor. They are just lucky that there have also been plenty of other

poor teams, but I can’t see them getting a result against a confident Palace team. Prediction: Home win Liverpool v Man City (Sunday, 1.37pm) Will this be the title decider? Liverpool cannot afford to lose if they are to keep their hopes of a first Premier League crown alive. They looked nervy last time out against West Ham and, if they play like that against City, they could wind up on the end of a heavy defeat. They need to be solid at the back and hope that their carefree attacking style brings rewards. City are still favourites for me, and this is the game in which they can move closer to a second title in three seasons. They attack with pace

and will look to get an early goal. However, they are slow across the back four and must display caution at all times. This could be a shootout - potentially, THE match of the season. Prediction: Away win Swansea v Chelsea (Sunday, 4.07pm) Swansea have had a season in which they have been distracted by a European campaign and a change of manager, coupled together with Michu being out for long periods, so it’s safe to say that the fans will be happy staying up. Their home performances have been well below par, and they will be hoping Chelsea turn up with a Champions League hangover. However, after a gutsy Tuesday night display

against PSG, which saw them progress to the semi-finals, Chelsea will be up for this fixture, as they still want to be in the title fight. A draw earlier in the day would be a good result for them, and the little horse would still be in with a shout. Prediction: Away win FA CUP SEMI-FINALS Wigan v Arsenal (Saturday, 5.07pm) After a scare early in the competition against Macclesfield, Cup-holders Wigan are again at Wembley with a chance to make the final two seasons in a row. They are also riding high in the Championship with a current play-off spot, and they have also knocked out Manchester City. So they will be full of belief that they can overcome Arsenal as well. This is a big game for Arsenal - it is fair to say that their season rests on winning the FA Cup. They’re out of the title race and being pursued for fourth spot by Everton, so this competition gives them a chance of silverware. But would it be enough to appease the fans? I’m not so sure. Wigan are in form and I have a feeling they might just jump this one-from-last hurdle. Prediction: Wigan win Hull v Sheffield Utd (Sunday, 4.07pm) What a game for both teams: a Wembley appearance and the opportunity of an FA Cup Final spot. Plus a real chance of playing in Europe next season. Hull have got to be favourites. They have just about ensured Premier League safety, so this game will not come as a distraction for them. Steve Bruce has played in many finals and his experience will prove vital in motivating his team. Sheffield Utd are here on merit and have taken a few decent scalps on the way. They will relish being underdogs, knowing they have nothing to lose and nothing to fear. It doesn’t matter how big the opposition, anything can happen over 90 minutes of football and I’m sure Nigel Clough will want to go all the way and lift the trophy - a feat his Dad Brian never achieved. Prediction: Hull win
