CRISTIANOS MARKET SHUT DOWN for now THE popular Los Cristianos Market, which attracts thousands of tourists and residents every Sunday, has been closed down.

But the owners are extremely confident that they will reopen next weekend. As many as 400 stalls serve up to 6,000 customers, and stall-owners are stunned by the development. The dramatic closure is the latest twist in a longrunning saga, dating back to the end of last summer. We understand that Local Police made an official complaint to Arona Town Hall, and requested the Council make a technical report on the market, which was undertaken in November. The exact recommendations from the report have not been made public, but we believe that concerns were raised over the market’s general security, disabled access, emergency procedures, security and legality. The owners were informed, instructed to make the relevant changes and told to submit the correct legal documentation. Three months later, a follow-up report was filed, stating that changes had not been implemented. On 14th May, a Spanish newspaper highlighted the story and the lack of any progress. But behind the scenes, wheels were in motion and Arona Mayor José

Francisco Niño signed a “temporary closure” notice last Friday, which was ratified on Tuesday. Market traders were left fuming, venting their anger at Baratillo los Verdes SL, which controls the market. They complained that they were given no formal notice or indication, despite pleas from numerous traders, who had heard rumours of a closure. But not everyone was crying. Antonio Luis González, President of the Arona branch of the Association for Businesspeople, Merchants and Professionals (AECP Arona), welcomed the decision, saying: “This precautionary measure serves to note the damage this illegal installation is causing the trade and business of Arona.” He added: “The market’s operators systematically violate the law, while other entrepre-

neurs have to bite the bullet to create jobs, pay taxes and help shape the development of the municipality.” But the legality of the actual traders is not the issue and has nothing to do with the closure. Canarian Weekly spoke with some traders, as well as people who work in the vicinity of the market. One trader, who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of repercussions from the market operators, told us: “I have been on the market for a number of years. “I import my stock legally, pay all my taxes and Social Security, and feel I have been badly let down by the operators - and not for the first time.” Other traders had similar feelings. We spoke to another person, who works on the Sunday market only because he has a weekday job.

He told Canarian Weekly: “I have just placed a massive order, which I will have to pay for, regardless of whether the market is on or not. I have spent a lot of money to stock my stall with products specific to summer trading. Now what am I supposed to do with it?” It’s not only the market traders who will be affected because many of the businesses across the road from the site rely on the Sunday market trade to boost their incomes as well. The owners of one of bar-restaurant told us that Sunday was their busiest day, and that losing that day’s trading may seriously affect their ability to stay open over time, should the market close permanently. The road adjacent to the market site comprises a number of similar businesses, none of which is in competition

with any market stalls. Food sales are prohibited on the Los Cristianos market. Then there is the issue of the taxi drivers. On a Sunday, there is a constant stream of cabs, ferrying shoppers to and from the market. And what of the holiday-makers who enjoy visiting the lively market? The market is itself a tourist attraction. Yesterday morning (Thursday), Baratillo los Verdes SL put out a document clarifying the situation and announcing it was confident the market would reopen in some form soon. It read: “Dear traders who work on the Los Cristianos market: As you will know, we received communication regarding the precautionary measure to temporarily suspend the market activity while we resolve the security issues of the land on which the market stands, for duration of three months. “This is the first official notification we have received in reference to matters of security. “Secondly: You should know that the operators have developed and presented: *Two insurance policies, including a public liability policy. *A certificate of verification of filling and testing fire extinguishers *Signage relating to evacuation routes, emergency exits and evacuation passageways *Safety certificates relating to the awnings and their behaviour in reaction to a fire *A contract for private security, stamped by the National Police *A contract of service provision with the association of fire fighters, with reference to their response to any threat “It appears that this is not sufficient, and we have to carry out further improvements to satisfy the municipal engineers. “We have asked the Town Hall, for reasons other than the obvious ones of public, social and tourist interest, that while the improvements are being made to the market, which has oper-

ated in the same location for 20 years without interruption, they authorise a temporary move of the market to Avenida Londres (adjacent to the current site) to allow a continuation of the market every Sunday between 9am and 3pm. “We hope this permission will be granted as soon as possible, and we will inform you as soon as we receive any notification.” Just before we went to press The Canarian Weekly spoke with Alvaro Luis Rodriguez (pictured), a director of Baratillo los Verdes SL. He told us he was confident the market would be back very soon “We have kept very quiet over the last few weeks on legal advice,” he said. “This matter has been in the hands of our legal team and we are working the problem. “Tomorrow (Friday), we will again present our appeal in the hope that we can open this Sunday. Of course, we are realistic, so maybe the Sunday after is a better target.” He added: “This ‘event’ is a political situation. We have enough exits, we have enough places for people to leave if there were a problem. We have all our insurance paid in full. We have a two- million-euro public liability policy. “We have enough fire extinguishers. We have a contract with the firefighters and have four fire-fighters every market day. “We have a ‘security’ contract which is signed by the National Police. We have been going since 1994 and have never had a problem! What else can we do? “Okay, we are making a change and putting in a ramp for our disabled customers. But have you noticed that if you go to Arona Town Hall, you can’t get in there in a wheelchair as they have no access! “After 20 years, it is a safe and secure market. This affects so many people. Think of all the local shops, bars, cafes and taxis. “We have the support of the tour companies, who have phoned us to offer help. It’s amazing.”

Hawking here for Starmus

RENO W NED British physicist Stephen Hawking will join a collection of Nobel Prize winners, astronomers, astronauts and cosmonauts at Tenerife’s second Starmus Festival.

It takes place at the Abama Resort between 22nd-27th September and, if last year’s reaction is anything to go by, it is bound to be another resounding success. Hawking, considered one of the greatest theoretical physicists since Albert Einstein, will give a keynote presentation on the festival’s theme Beginnings: the making of the modern cosmos. His work on the origins and structure of the universe, from the Big Bang to black holes, revolutionised the field, while his multi-million best-selling books A Brief History of Time (1988), The Universe in a Nutshell (2001) and The Grand Design (2010) helped popularise science and make it accessible to everyone. A Brief History of Time broke all book-sale records beyond belief. By May 1995, it had been in The Sunday Times best-sellers’ list for 237 weeks, breaking the previous 184-week record and selling 10 million copies in 10 years - a feat recorded in the 1998 Guinness Book of Records. Hawking was diagnosed with ALS - a form of Motor Neurone Disease - shortly after his 21st birthday, and was given two years to live. But despite being wheelchair-bound, and dependent on a computerised voice system for communication, he still combines a family life (he has three children and three grandchildren) with his continued research into theoretical physics, together with an extensive programme of travel and public lectures. He also has ambitions to travel into space one day! Hawking, who has 12 honorary degrees, will be accompanied at the Starmus Festival by prominent figures such

as Nobel Prize-winners Robert W Wilson and Sir Harold W Kroto; British ethologist, zoologist and scientist Richard Dawkins; astrophysicist and acclaimed Queen guitarist Brian May; American astronomer Jill Tarter; astrophysicists Robert Williams; Apollo moon-walkers

Edgar Mitchell, Charlie Duke and Jack Schmitt. And there will be five cosmonauts in attendance, including Alexei Leonov, the first human to actually make a space walk - back in 1965. New to the line-up of speakers are Chris Lintott, astrophysicist and presenter of BBC’s Sky

at Night programme, and Kateriana Harvati, Professor of Paleanthropology. The Starmus Festival programme also includes round-table discussions and lectures from the stars mentioned, plus a concert with legendary keyboard player Rick Wake-

man, alongside Brian May. There will also be a star-gazing “Star Party” at the Teide Observatory, and visitors to the festival will be able to mingle and share their views on astronomy with the well-known personalities. The official launch of

Starmus 2014, in Santa Cruz, was attended by Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, Canaries’ President Paulino Rivero; Delia Herrera, Tenerife’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Garik Israelian, astrophysicist and researcher at the IAC. Carlos Alonso pointed out how Tenerife and the Canary Islands, in general, are attractive to science because of their natural resources. These are of particular importance to the tourism sector, with increasingly-popular activities like star-gazing, for example. Meanwhile, Delia Herrera welcomed the presence of esteemed scientist Hawking, describing him as “a star among the stars”. She also praised the efforts made by the authorities to get Hawking involved in Starmus as a keynote speaker at the Festival. Rivero, praising the Starmus Festival, said it is bringing together nature, culture, knowledge and science – “proof that the Canary Islands use their natural resources for different purposes.” Alonso, in the same vein, said: “Tenerife and all the Canary Islands are attractive to the science world because of their natural resources, which are particularly important to the tourism sector, with activities such as stargazing becoming ever more popular.” He added: “The Starmus Festival is open to anybody with a passion for astronomy and science. It celebrates the wonder of the cosmos and the scientific progress being made to understand physics and the stars.” The six-day festival costs 200 euros for residents - and there is a 100-euro offer for a second delegate if booked and paid by 31st June. Further information can be found on the festival website at www.starmus.com.

Voting is a turn off! IT was like a reflection from the UK as European Election voting in the Canaries showed a swing away from the major political parties.

In fact, the Islands showed the lowest turnout of any autonomous communities in Spain. The People’s Party (PP) and Socialist Workers party (PSOE) suffered losses, along with the Canary Coalition (CC). Those parties gaining were the Canary United Left (IUC) and the relatively-new Podemos (we can) party. Overall, the PP lost more than 100,000 votes, compared with the elections five years ago. The PSOE dropped around 80,000 votes, and the CC around 25,000. The PP maintained top spot with 23.35% of the votes, just a point above the PSOE (22.25%). The CC secured 12.2%, which was felt “very disappointing”. Podemos managed 10.99% of the vote, and the IUC were just behind on 10.47%. The rise in support for the smaller, regional parties demonstrated the voters’ lack of faith in the major parties since the recession began. The PSOE topped the voting in Tenerife, despite losing around 30,000 votes, while in Gran Canaria, the PP hung on, after losig half its votes (122,640 to 61,183). The PSOE also won in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and retained dominance in La

Gomera. The CC held El Hierro, increasing its margin. Of the Islands’ major cities, the PP won Santa Cruz and La Laguna, ahead of the PSOE and CC, with the CC slipping to fifth place behind Podemos and IUC. In Gran Canaria’s Las Palmas and Telde, the PP won, followed by the PSOE and then IUC. The PP’s Santa Cruz HQ enjoyed the feeling of a late victory over the PSOE, their potential slump softened by the socialists’ will La Palma, spoke of his party’s intent, saying: “We will convince the people that we are going in the right direction.” His Gran Canaria counterpart, regional PP leader and current Minister for Industry, Energy and Tourism, José Manuel Soria

promised “not to disappoint”. At the other end of the scale, IUC’s Tenerife chairman Manuel Domínguez acknowledged the impact on the European elections of local and national government cuts and policies, which showed a definite shift away from the PP. But he did stress that voters valued his party’s “effort, work and dedication”. The IUC had cause to celebrate after voters said the party’s growth could open doors to an alternative government for the Canaries. Local IUC co-ordinator Ramón Trujillo spoke of the bigger parties having placed the Islands “at the forefront of unemployment and poverty”. He said this was the

reason for voters “punishing” them by voting for smaller parties like the IUC. Trujillo added that the PP, PSOE and CC were responsible for what he

called “an unfair electoral system”. He wants the major parties to have the “dignity” to lower the minimum vote required to enter the Canary Is-

lands’ Parliament to 3%, which is the same as for local council elections. Despite disappointing results, PSOE regional secretary Julio Cruz welcomed the gap-narrowing between the PP and the PSOE, with the latter reducing its deficit by almost 10 points since 2009. Cruz added that his party had become the major force in some islands, and called for some “reflection time”. Meanwhile, CC Secretary General José Miguel Barragán said his party were unsatisfied with the results, despite remaining in third place overall. He also agreed that smaller, newer parties were gaining momentum. Barragán also said the general dissatisfaction of the Spanish with the way things had been handled since the recession had made an impact. He believes voters were more concerned with matters in Spain and less concerned about what is happening at European level.

Splashing time for desalination plant TENERIFE’S desalination plant in the South, which lies between Arona and Adeje, has produced over nine million cubic metres of desalinated water in the last nine years.

That’s a daily average of 22,991, and the Cabildo is aiming to push this figure to 40,000 in the near future by expanding the plant. Canaries Water Minister Jesús Morales says the system is “a clear example” of how co-ordination between the government and municipal infrastructure can improve service to the people of

Tenerife. The project is monitored jointly by the Island Council of Tenerife Water (Ciatf) and the town halls of Arona and Adeje. The plant has been operational since 1988, and has a maximum capacity of 30,000 m³/ day, serving the coastal and tourist areas of the two municipalities. Since opening, it has

provided sanitation and purification services which treated 9,317,525 m³ of water, and has biologically purified 6,842,537 m³. The treated waste water is reused and, approximately, 8,000 m³/ day is sent to the reservoirs in Valle san Lorenzo, from where it is distributed to the agricultural areas around

Las Galletas, irrigating banana plantations in the main. Expansion work, with a 21-millioneuro budget, will allow the plant to meet environmental objectives by increasing the output of treated water for agricultural use. Another phase of the project will create a pumping station - provisionally earmarked for

the Parque de la Reina area - which will send water to Llano del Camello and Las Chafiras, and could even supply the coastal part of San Miguel de Abona. All in all, the investment would mean a lowering of production costs and the possibility to adapt the supply to the areas, according to seasonal demand.

Doctor’s appointment? Give it a week or two! DOCTORS’ waiting lists in the Canaries are getting longer and longer - and they will not be getting shorter any time soon!

Spanish town’s name change A VILLAGE named Kill Jews has finally changed its name - centuries after the Spanish Inquisition.

The mayor of the town, known as Castrillo Matajudios (Castrillo Kill Jews in English) threatened to resign unless its 56 voters approved changing the embarrassing name. The town, near the northern city of Burgos, organised the vote to coincide with polling for Sunday’s European elections. Residents, were offered the choice of keeping the current name, or changing it to Castrillo Motajudios or Castrillo Mota de Judios, which means Mound of the Jews. Of the 53 who voted,

29 went for change and 19 have expressed their desire to keep the name. Four votes were declared invalid. The City Council will meet next week to ratify the change, and the town will be known as Castrillo Mota de Judíos. Mayor Lorenzo Rodriguez said; “When you travel elsewhere, you always have to explain, because people say, ‘You kill Jews in Castrillo’. “It makes no sense, because we are descended from a Jewish community. We have a star of David on our coat of arms.” He said the town was home to a Jewish community, which settled on a mound in the area around 800 years ago and remained there until 1492, when Jews were mostly expelled by a brutal, religious tribunal known as the Inqui-

sition. It allowed only those who converted to the Roman Catholic faith to stay in Spain. Archaeologist Angel Palomino said it was thought that descendants of Jews, who had converted to Roman Catholicism, decided to change the town’s name to prove the purity of their faith. Historians believe that at least 200,000 Jews lived in Spain before the 1492 expulsion. Many who refused to convert or leave were burned at the stake. Palomino said that up to 1,500 people probably lived in the Jewish settlement, which later became known as Matajudios. Spain now offers citizenship to the Sephardic Jews who can prove they are descended from those who were expelled.

A new study by the Organisation for Consumers and Users (OCU) reveals that just 17% of people in the Canaries are able to secure an appointment with their family doctor in 24 hours. And a ridiculous one in 10 has to wait for up to a fortnight. The survey asked the opinions of over 4,000 people about the public health services, and the Canary Is-

lands was one of the regions with most complaints. Answers showed a significant difference between autonomous communities. People in La Rioja and Navarra were more likely to secure an appointment within 24 hours (73% and 75% respectively), as opposed to just 16% in Catalonia and 17% in the Canaries. And 62% of patients in Asturias are able to get “next-day” appointments with their GP, followed by Extremadura (61%), Aragón (61%), CastillaLa Mancha and Castilla y León (both 55%), Galicia and Cantabria (52%), Basque Country

(51%), Murcia (47%) , Andalucia (38%), Madrid (36%), Valencia (26%) and the Balearic Islands (20%). It’s not just appointments with doctors that are hard to come by in many areas. Many respondents reported difficulty in seeing practice nurses (for injections, ECG, blood pressure and blood sugar tests etc), with only 46% being able to get a next-day appointment. Most worrying, however, are the 10% of people in the Canaries and Valencia, who have said they expect a delay of one to two weeks before seeing their GP.

Come Together!

TODAY (Friday) is Dia de Canarias, or Canary Islands Day, and it’s just about the biggest local fiesta of the year.

The day marks the anniversary of the first regional parliament session, which took place on May 30, 1983. All schools, banks and councils are closed, while many offices and businesses will also have the day off to celebrate. I’m sure that yesterday, everyone’s Facebook timeline was full of pictures of friends’ ankle-biters in Canarian dress for special events at school. Which sparked some interesting remarks. Some nailed it: “As an immigrant in this country, I feel it is important to embrace their culture. Therefore, I have no problem with my children dressing in the national dress and joining in with the celebrations. I doubt very much this would happen in the UK, and therein lies the problem!” Or, as a retired old

champagne-quaffer put it: “On Thursday the schoolchildren, whether Canarian, Spanish or foreign or of a different religious culture, dress in The National Costume to celebrate ‘Canarias Day’. They have parties in the schools and invite the parents to come to a traditional buffet of Canarian food. “Can you see this happening in the UK? No, because some PC do-gooder or religious group would complain to the school. This is one of the things that is wrong with Britain today” I couldn’t agree more. And for many of us, it’s another reason why we choose to live here. As I’ve written before, on the whole, our community, and the people of the Island, are very tolerant and integrated. It’s interesting to think that London, the most cosmopolitan city in Europe, is where the least votes were polled for UKIP in the Euro Elections. I’d wager the same result would happen here. Live and let live. It’s what we do here.

La Laguna University drop-outs prove costly WITH fewer students entering the jobs market, and many more abandoning studies during the courses, the University of La Laguna (ULL) is counting the cost.

Accounts at Tenerife’s major academic institution reveal that it lost 775,000 euros in the past two years, mainly through students cancelling their registrations. Despite that, the uni-

versity has increased overall income by 5.38% through privatesector involvement. Help from the scientific sector has been a lifeline for the centre, which has seen a steady drop in contributions from the Canary Islands Government since the recession began. To combat the cuts, the ULL sought investment from the private sector, which has seen capital raised from the provision of services more than double (up 105.18%), while the contribution from tuition fees fell by 1.12%.

The decision to continue into higher education is often governed by cost, putting it beyond the reach of many, and ULL Economic Affairs representative José A Melián says that a number of students enrol for courses, but, after discovering there are no scholarships of other funding, decide they can’t afford to continue their studies. This, Melián believes, is the main reason for the number of midcourse drop-outs. In 2012, the university grossed 20.2 million euros, which rose to 21.3

million last year. Investment from the private sector for research contracts amounted to 1.04 million euros, rising to 2.13m euros in 2013. Many of the research contracts were agreed via the General Service for Research Support (Segai) of the ULL, a body designed to provide technical and scientific support to research teams to the university and other institutions. Segai also aims to provide technology and services to local businesses to contribute to regional development.

Cabildo’s big-spenders! THE first stage of Tenerife Cabildo’s investment plan will distribute around 90 million euros in what President Carlos Alonso calls “the year of action”.

Alonso said it was “very likely” that work will begin on the plan to modernise Puerto de la Cruz in an attempt to regenerate tourism in the area. It is hoped that around half the town’s capacity for visiting tourists will benefit. Adeje will receive a 2.5m-euro investment to improve Avenida de los Pueblos, which runs through San Eugenio. This will, hopefully, improve tourism competitiveness, and also provide more job opportunities. This part of the plan will be jointly-financed by the Canaries’ Government through its Open Area Business Plan, the Cabildo and Adeje Town Hall. Among other initiatives is an 829,500-euro investment for a campaign to prevent forest fires, which will run into 2016. Hispanic Aviation has been awarded the helicopter con-

tract, and Alonso says that part of the company’s duties will be to provide air assistance, as well as co-ordinating special-

ist forest-fire-fighting teams as quickly as possible. Many readers will recall the catastrophic effect last December’s

heavy rains had on many roads - especially the severe damage caused by fast-moving flood water on the road from Punta Prieta.

Work is now underway to build a containment wall to channel the water away from nearby roads and houses. Sustainable energy

is another target for the Cabildo and, with the co-operation of local town halls, an Action Plan for Sustainable Energy will be devised.

Small retailers post increases SALES within small retail outlets grew by 3.5% in the year from April 2013 to this April. A new study by the Na-

tional Statistics Institute (INE) showed that this figure was exceeded only by the Balearic Islands, who posted a 5.9% growth. Overall, in the whole of Spain, year-on-year sales rose by 0.1% after

accounting for inflation. With seasonal adjustment (accounting for the fact that Easter fell in April this year), sales rose by 0.7%. On a monthly basis, a rise 1.1% was recorded. Retail sales rose in 10

of Spain’s autonomous communities, led by the Balearics (5,9%), the Canaries (3.5%) and Valencia (2.8%). But Madrid’s dropped by 3.5%, followed by Aragon (2.7%). Employment in retail

rose slightly in small outlets (0.4%), a little more in large chains and supermarkets (0.6% each), but smaller chains experienced a drop of 2.9%. The Canaries also posted the highest in-

crease in retail employment, up 2.1%, followed by the Balearic Islands (+1.7%) and Cantabria (+1.4%). The highest falls were in Murcia (-2.2%), Madrid (-1.2%) and Asturias (-1%).

Canary incomes are same for eight years

THE Living Conditions Survey, published by the National Statistics Institute (INE) on Tuesday, makes for depressing reading as far as the Canaries are concerned.

The purchasing power of Canarian households has plummeted, with incomes remaining unchanged for eight years, despite increases in the cost of living. In 2004, the average household income was 23,113 euros, and in 2012 it rose to just 23,194 euros. There was a period in which net incomes rose, but this peaked in 2005 - and it has been in steady decline ever since. The situation is echoed on a national level; on the mainland in 2012, the average

household income was 26,775 euros - a decline

of 3.5% in one year. Yet despite the

relative drop in family income when offset

against the cost of living, the poverty risk

has actually decreased. In the last year, the number of people in the Canary Islands living below the poverty line dropped from 33.2% to 28.4%. The Canaries remain the autonomous community with the fourth-highest poverty rate in the whole of Spain, where the overall average decreased from 20.8% to 20.4% in the past year. Many families find it difficult to get to the end of the month without financial difficulties, with 16.6% of households in the Canaries having a hard time making ends meet. And 54% said they could not afford to have a one-week holiday per year away from home. Finally, 23.7% of people in the Canary Islands reported suffering from excessive noise, either from neighbours or outside - a figure which has doubled in the last decade.

Police pounce on fake clothes gang COUNTERFEIT sports gear, worth around 190,000 euros, has been seized in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and 13 arrests have been made.

Another five suspects have been implicated and the entire gang are all Spanish. The police operation focused on the manufacture, distribution and sale of sports clothing. Those involved have been charged with an alleged “offence against intellectual property”. The police operation, which began in March after authorities were alerted to a flood of counterfeit goods arriving on stalls in Tenerife’s markets, led to a

probe into their source. The investigation identified several members of the production and distribution gang, including the alleged leaders and most of the participants. The inquiry also looked into the financial side of the operation, which uncovered evidence that the goods were being circulated around most of the markets in Gran Canaria and as Tenerife. The goods were produced in the homes of those arrested. Screen printing machines were used, and all the tools necessary for production were also found and seized. Among the fake items were T-shirts, sweatshirts, tracksuits, trainers, towels and hats, many of which carried the names of well-

known sports and leisure gear companies, including adidas and Vans. The investigation developed once the leaders were identified, and from there, attempts were made to shut down the entire operation. Overall, around 6,300 items were seized, the vast majority in Tenerife, and the remainder in Gran Canaria. Huge amounts of blank items were also seized, along with large sums of money. The swoop was made on 11th May at the markets of La Recova in Santa Cruz, and Santa Catalina, in Las Palmas. The alleged ringleaders are believed to be a father and son; the father based in Gran Canaria and the son in La Laguna.

Body’s found in north cave THE Guardia Civil is investigating the discovery of human remains in a cave near La Guancha, in the north of Tenerife.

The bones were unearthed by three local

friends. They decided to explore the cave, which was difficult to reach, and found a skull, some jawbones and several other bones. They took them to the Local Police in La Guancha, who in turn informed the Guardia Civil - and a forensic

team was dispatched to the cave. Latest reports suggest that any further remains are not to be touched because they may belong to a Guanche site. Experts from the University of La Laguna are expected to continue the investigation.

We’re hunting Yoo for ferry’s tragedy! THE search for the ferry company owner, whose Sewol vessel sank last month, has been stepped up by South Korea officials.

Prosecutors are offering a £300,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Yoo Byung-eun. Police have also arrested four members of a religious sect led by the businessman on suspicion of helping the fugitive. Yoo faces allegations of tax evasion, embezzlement and negligence following the sinking of the ferry, in which some 300 lives were lost - including many schoolchildren. He is believed to own the Chonghaejin Marine company, which ran the fatal ferry. Yoo is also alleged to have been involved in the ferry’s overloading, and major adjust-

ments to its structure, which are thought to have contributed to the 16th April disaster. The Sewol remains submerged off the south-west coast of Korea. Most of the 300 people who lost their lives were pupils from the same school, near Seoul. Five employees of Chonghaejin have also been indicted for professional negligence.

Yoo Byung-eun, a mysterious figure, is rarely photographed. As well as being a wealthy businessman, martial artist and founder of a religious sect, he is an acclaimed photographer of nature. Hundreds of church supporters protested outside the prosecutors’ office on Sunday to denounce what they called harassment and persecution.

Pope calls for peace POPE FRANCIS has made an indelible impression on his Middle East tour.

On his final day, he called on Christians, Jews and Muslims to “work together for justice and peace”. He began the day by visiting a number of holy sites in Jerusalem’s old city. The Pontiff said: “May we respect and love one another as brothers and sisters. May we learn to understand the suffering of others. May no one abuse the name of God through violence.” The Pope kissed the hands of half-a-dozen Holocaust survivors as they recounted their stories of loved ones, killed by the Nazis during World War II. Pope Francis also met Israel Prime Minister Benjamin, and they shook hands at the Notre Dame Centre. At the end of his threeday visit, in the walled

Old City, he said: “May we work together for justice and peace.” The Pope made a surprise trip to a memorial to Israeli victims of terrorism. And he then visited a memorial to Israeli victims of terrorism, a day after voicing strong solidarity for the Palestinian cause. The Pontiff prayed before a holy crypt, and laid a wreath of yellowand-white flowers in the Hall of Remembrance. The Pope also prayed at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, saying: “Never again, Lord, never again. Here we are, Lord, shamed by what man, created in your own image and likeness, was capable of doing.”

Star Wars in their eyes! STAR Wars fans have been offered a chance to win a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The prize, to appear in Star Wars: Episode VII, includes flights to London and accommodation for the winner and a guest. It will cost them £6,

but the successful entrants will go behind the scenes at Pinewood Studios, meet the cast and play a character. “These fans are some of the most passionate and committed folks around the globe,” said director JJ Abrams. “We’re thrilled to offer a chance for them to come as our VIP guests,

and be in Star Wars: Episode VII. “We’re even more excited that, by participating in this campaign, Star Wars fans will be helping children around the world through our collaboration with Unicef Innovation Labs and projects.” There are a maximum of 10,000 entries per

person and the competition closes on 18th July. The campaign is being run by Omaze, a company with experience of offering such packages for charity, having this year already given people the chance to ride in a tank with Arnold Schwarzenegger, for the benefit of after-school programmes.

That’s killed two classics!

AMONG the US literary classics to be dropped by a GCSE exam board following the UK Education Secretary’s call for more British works to be studied were To Kill a Mockingbird and Of Mice and Men. Neither book is on the GCSE English Literature draft syllabus in England. Michael Gove’s overhaul has also got shot of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. The Department for Education said its document about new content for the subject, published in December, “doesn’t ban any authors, books or genres”. But Labour said the changes were “ideological and backward-looking”. The new GCSE course content will include at least one play by William Shakespeare, a selection of work by the Roman-

were fewer opportunities to include them in the new syllabus. Mr Gove, not the most popular of MPs, said the new exam questions would be more rigorous and designed to ensure that pupils had read the whole book. The Conservative MP, who studied English at Oxford University, has in the past highlighted his

tic poets, a 19th Century novel, a selection of poetry since 1850 and a 20th Century novel or drama. The decision to drop

works by US authors was through the DfE’s desire for the exam to be more “more focused on tradition”, and that there

concern that pupils were reading Of Mice and Men in particular. Paul Dodd, head of GCSE and A-Level re-

form of OCR (a leading UK awarding body, providing qualifications for learners of all ages at school, college, in work or through part-time learning programmes), said: “Mr Gove has a particular dislike for Of Mice and Men and was disappointed that more than 90% of candidates were studying it.” Steinbeck’s six-chapter novella, written in 1937, about displaced ranch workers during the Great Depression, and Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, have become a mainstay of GCSE exams. Academics have said the reason that schools opt to study the works is because they are accessible to students across a range of abilities. But OCR, and the other exam boards, have had to follow new DfE guidelines when drawing up their syllabuses for teaching from 2015. Pupils will still be able to study modern work by British authors. Meera Syal’s 1996 story, Anita and Me, about a British Punjabi girl in the

Midlands, and Dennis Kelly’s 2007 play about bullying, DNA, are understood to be among the most recent works included in the draft syllabus. But a Department of Education spokesperson said: “In the past, English Literature GCSEs were not rigorous enough, and their content was often far too narrow.” A Labour spokesman said: “True to form, Michael Gove is putting his own ideological interests ahead of the interests of our children. “His vision is backwardlooking and preventing the rich, broad and balanced curriculum we need in our schools if our children are to succeed in the future economy.” And Bethan Marshall, chair of the National Association for the Teaching of English, and a senior lecturer in English at King’s College London, said: “Many teenagers will think that being made to read Dickens, aged 16, is tedious. This will just grind children down.”

A fat lot of good these trains are!

THEY should paint them red! New trains ordered in a £2.43bn deal to expand the French network are too wide for many of the stations’ platforms.

From a total of 8,700, some 1,300 platforms will need to be modified to accommodate the new trains. A spokesman for the national operator said:

“We discovered the problem a bit late. We recognise that, and we accept responsibility on that score.” Work has already started to modify hundreds of stations and move trackside equipment to accommodate the new trains. The mistake was first reported by a French satirical magazine, which said the train-makers were given dimensions for platforms built since the 1980s. However, platforms in more than 1,000 loca-

tions built decades beforehand were said to be a different size. An SNCF spokesman confirmed the technical issue, saying: “The problem is not with the rolling stock but with the platforms.” Remedial work totalling 50m euros (£40m) has already been spent to get the deal back on track. It added that the trains “were wider to meet public expectations” and that the alterations would cost just 1.25% of its annual

maintenance and infrastructure budget. More than 300 platforms have been altered to date, with another 600 expected to be completed by the end of the year. French Transport Minister Frederic Cuvillier said an “absurd rail system” caused the error. He added: “When you separate the rail operator from the train company, this is what happens.” Work will be finished by 2016 - to coincide

with full delivery of the multi-billion contract! The decade-long expansion plan comes as the rail system has seen a 50% rise in passenger numbers around the French capital, and a 40% rise in regional travel. France’s biggest railworker union, the CGT, denounced the mistaken order as proof of the dangers of deregulation, seizing on the costly error on the eve of an antiliberalisation protest in Paris. The CGT said the or-

der would never have happened had the state railway company not been split in two in a preliminary step towards privatisation. “This saga would be just a vaudeville farce if it were not for the fact that it results from the split,” said a union spokseman. That was referring to a 1997 decision to break the railways into two entities - the SNCF train service operator and RFF, which is in charge of rail infrastructure.

Money Matters

By Mariano Zunino Siri

I HAVE received an email with an interesting and serious question from a representative from one Community of Owners. Although I have replied personally, it would be interesting to include the summary of the email, and my opinion.

I live on a community which has fallen into debt because of nonpayers, and we are now in danger of having electricity and water turned off. As a fully-paid-up resident, is there anything I can do to ensure that I do not lose water and electricity? The owners who do not pay their Community fees cause many problems for the Community and other co-owners. In fact, all the updated owners are financing nonpayers. For instance, the Community pays the maintenance of the pool, but it is used by all owners, including those who owe fees. If the debtors represent a big percentage, the Community has no money to pay for the electricity or water supply throughout Com-

30th May 2014 - 5th June 2014

The Community debtors problem

munity areas. And if the electricity is cut off, there will be no distinction between payers and debtors. There is a legal solution to this problem: to sue the debtors. But before starting legal action, it would be advisable to send every debtor a letter of requirement through a lawyer. Some debtors will probably pay, but others will not. These should be taken to Court and, after that, there would be several possibilities: *The debtor pays immediately to avoid serious consequences and

more expenses. Remember that the legal fees, interests and costs paid in advance by the Community should be recovered. *The debtor tries to find a solution. In this case, the Community should consider the advantages and disadvantages of accepting partial payments from an irregular payer, taking into account that any deal should include old and new instalments. *The debtor does not pay. In this case, the Community should attach the property (“embargo”) at the Land

Registry after the judgment to force the sale by auction. A preventive attachment (previous to the judgment) would be also possible. One common example is that the debtor is involved in a foreclosing procedure. Knowing that he is going to lose his property, the debtor decides not to pay anything. Bear in mind that if the bank finally takes possession, it will be liable for the last three years and the current one (Law modified in 2013). Consequently, if the debtor owes more than

three years it will be difficult to recover the money those years. That is why a prompt decision to take the debtor to Court is very important. Until 2013, the new owner was liable for the last and the current year. That is why the law extended the liability to three years. Another example is that the site developer who was unable to sell many properties does not pay the Community fees because of his poor financial situation. The first step of the Community would be to call an extraor-

dinary meeting to approve the debt of every apartment, taking into account that non-payers owners do not have a vote. The certificate of the agreements approving the debts would be written evidence in Court of the outstanding sums. Whatever your choice, the worst thing to do is await the debtors’ decisions. EZE GROUP WIN LIBEL ACTION Eze Group is expecting to be awarded substantial damages after successfully progressing a libel action against Mind Timeshare and the blog owner Mr Alberto Garcia.

Following the landmark High Court ruling EZE Group’s media lawyers Pinder Reaux are now in contact with

Wordpress in order to request the removal of all libellous material and disclosure of the blog contributors. Last year EZE Group was successfully granted a High Court Order to expose the people behind the damaging blog postings that appeared on the Mind Timeshare website. Despite this, the

blog hosting platform Wordpress, refused to adhere to the High Court order for the defamatory postings to be removed, citing concerns that it was contrary to the right of free speech as set out in the First Amendment of the American Constitution. Unperturbed Dominic O’Reilly, EZE Group’s CEO instructed city

media lawyers Pinder Reaux to commence a libel action against Mind Timeshare and the blog operator. The action gave Mind Timeshare and Mr Garcia the opportunity to prove legitimacy of the comments contained within the blog, but after proceedings were served via electronic format (due to Mr

Garcia’s evasiveness) no acknowledgment or defence was received. On May 16th 2014 in the Queen’s Bench Division of the High Court, London judgement in default was granted due to the failure of Mr Garcia to reply to proceedings. A damages hearing to assess the award of damages payable by Mr Garcia to Eze Group will now be set for the first available hearing after July 2nd 2014. Commenting on the successful proceedings, Dominic O’Reilly said:

“This is a classic case of persistence beating resistance and we are now awaiting the award for the damage caused to our business reputation and the financial loss suffered as a result of the postings.” Mr Spyrou of Pinder Reaux media lawyers added that ‘people should exercise extreme caution when considering contributing to blog sites as the internet can entice people into making comments that they may well regret later’

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance Channel 4, 21:00

Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor direct this follow-up to 2007’s Ghost Rider, with Nicolas Cage returning as Johnny Blaze, the flaming-skulled biker who made a deal with the devil. In this second film, Johnny has to protect young Danny, for whom Satan has wicked plans. As superheroes go, Johnny Blaze is one of the most visually interesting, and the script gives Cage plenty of droll lines as he goes about the explosive task of keeping Danny safe and attempting to lift the curse of the Ghost Rider.

What the Dambusters Did Next Channel 5, 17:45

I Bought A Rainforest BBC2, 20.00 Wildlife photographer Charlie Hamilton James has bought 100 acres of the Peruvian Rainforest - without even looking at it first. Situated at the end of a road, he hopes it’s a strategic purchase which will stop loggers illegally entering the Manu National Park and cutting down trees. Charlie plans to spend a year there photographing the wildlife and looking at ways to protect the forest. But when he arrives, he quickly realises things aren’t quite so simple. Instead of the green heaven he was imagining, it turns out he’s bought a coca plantation, an illegal logging camp and a few fields of depleted crops. The reality of what he’s taken on soon hits home. Over three programmes, Charlie discovers that the problems facing the Amazon are now all on his doorstep - the drug trade, illegal gold mining, logging and poverty. To make the right decisions about his land he needs to understand these problems, and he sets out to learn more by living and working with the local people. Intercut with Charlie’s photographs of wildlife and the people he meets, this is a jungle adventure that takes in everything from venomous snakes and hallucinogenic shamanic brews to flesh-eating diseases. Along the way, Charlie’s wife, Philippa Forrester, comes out to check on his progress. The question is, what will Charlie decide to do with his land, and will the experience change Charlie’s ideas about how to help preserve the rainforest? In episode one, we join Charlie as he first visits his land and discovers he hasn’t bought the pristine rainforest of his dreams, but 100 acres of secondary forest complete with a squatter, coca crops, and some reputedly dangerous neighbours. Undaunted, Charlie sets off to find out what animals and insects still live on his land, but it’s only when he visits a local NGO that has successfully replanted a large area of forest that Charlie begins to believe his mission is not entirely hopeless. Alongside biologist Andy Whitworth, Charlie goes to find a mahogany tree which is due to be cut down in just 24 hours’ time. They do a ‘bioblast’ on the tree – cataloguing as many species as they can that live on or around the tree – an exercise which highlights just how much wildlife will lose its habitat when the tree is logged. Devastated by the loss of one of the giants of the forest, Charlie returns to his land determined to confront the illegal logger squatting there and throw him off. But when he finally catches up with him, Charlie’s resolve is tested in an unexpected way…

For the Love of Cars Channel 4, 20:00

Over the series, Philip Glenister and car designer Ant Anstead have trawled the barns and lockups of Britain to find and painstakingly restore six incredible examples of classic cars. Now it’s time for their pride and joy collection to be shipped off to one of the country’s largest and most prestigious car auctions to face their last, and greatest, challenge: the buying public. Philip and Ant know their cars are loved, but will that mean anything in the altogether more hardnosed commercial world of the classic car auction? Here love takes a back seat to business. The episode ends as the auction room fills with some familiar faces as the Ford Escort, the Mini Cooper, Triumph Stag, Land Rover series 1, MG and DeLorean all go under the hammer.

British Airways is one of the UK’s most visible brands. It sells Britishness as a mark of quality to passengers all around the world. However, in the last decade, the business has faced financial crisis, and today more people fly Easy Jet than BA. Against the turbulent backdrop of recent times, the BBC has been granted access to the inner world of the airline. From the top-level decisions made by CEO Willie Walsh about expansion in China, to the daily operations challenges of its global team, A Very British Airline on BBC Two follows some of BA’s 40,000 staff as they work to meet the iconic airline’s exacting standards. The opening episode explores how the airline tries to persuade people to spend more to fly. We reveal what’s known as millionaire’s door at Heathrow Terminal 5, a lounge, restaurant, spa and champagne bar reserved for those select few who are happy to part with small fortunes to fly in the airline’s First Class. And, as BA plays catch-up with its rivals, cameras follow as BA brings its first Airbus A380, the world’s biggest passenger plane, into service with a highprofile launch.

Quads - Our First Year ITV1, 20.00

Quads is a heartwarming documentary that follows first-time parents Sharon and Julian Turner through their first year of looking after their premature quadruplets. After spending tens of thousands of pounds on three failed rounds of IVF, you could forgive the Turners for giving up on having a baby. But against all advice, flying in the face of upsetting, low odds of conception, the couple persevered and went for a fourth round. Six months later, four premature babies arrived by emergency caesarian. Two pairs of identical twins: two boys and two girls - James, Joshua, Lauren and Emily. Quadruplets born at extraordinary odds of seventy million to one. “I’m feeling in awe and amazement that we have four babies. Because up until the moment they were born, I didn’t think it would happen for us. We’ve been through so many rounds of IVF it’s all been a bit of a nightmare.” Julian This film sees the couple share their story of their extraordinary conception, a journey that took them to a Greek IVF clinic, Sharon’s surprise risky pregnancy and the quads’ premature birth. Weighing just two and a half pounds each, their early weeks of life were spent in special baby care, Sharon and Julian keeping a bedside vigil. Miraculously, all four babies survived, and from the life-defining moment of taking their babies home right up until their first birthday, this film captures the emotional rollercoaster ride of a truly eventful year. Even with grandparents moving in to support them with the 24/7 childcare, adjusting to life with four premature newborns has taken Julian and Sharon Turner on the most intense, exhausting and demanding journey of their lives. Sharon had never changed a nappy before having her babies, and Julian’s only experience was practicing on a doll in antenatal classes. We follow them through their crash course in parenting. Nothing could have prepared them for looking after their four miracle babies round the clock – the 24 feeds a day, the endless nappy changes, the exhausting nights, and their babies first illness – coming as it does at Christmas. “When one gets ill, they’re all going to get ill. It’s going to be like this forever. They’re probably all going to get chicken pox at the same time… I can’t even imagine it. Looking after four babies at the same time is hard enough, but when you’re looking after four poorly babies, it’s not much fun.” Sharon It’s a journey that defies most parents’ imagination, but one that the Turners face with admirable humour, when even telling their babies apart is a feat neither parent can quite master in the first six months! “I do look at them as two sets of twins and I find myself explaining to people they are quads but they are two sets of identical twins.” Sharon Over the year, we witness every parent’s precious moments, but multiplied four times. Babies’ bath time, bedtime, learning to sit and crawl… normal activities which in the Turner household require nothing short of military planning, testing family relationships and pushing their parents to their very limits. We also share Sharon and Julian’s joy as their tiny babies reach important milestones and celebrate the big occasions …their christening, their first Christmas and the family’s first trip abroad; imagined as a break from the relentless babycare, destined to go wrong from the outset. And as their first year of parenthood draws to a close, we witness Sharon and Julian’s slowly dawning realization that nothing is going to get easier as their babies get bigger – on the contrary, everything is going to get a whole lot harder. Covering every aspect of their first year, Quads is a moving and humorous look at the beginning of four tiny lives that started against all odds.

The second episode of this three-part series takes viewers into the drug trafficking gang-controlled favelas, which are under attack from the government special forces pacification plans in advance of the World Cup and Olympics. In the favela Complexo da Maré, Carlos runs the local Resident’s Association. Until a few years ago, he was a high-ranking drug trafficker himself, but when he found out his wife Adrianna was pregnant with twins, he decided to take a more conventional career path. Now Carlos is campaigning against the government’s incursions, especially if they come in with tanks and helicopters during his children’s school run. Meanwhile, in the favela Complexo do Lins, Breguete has reached the finals of a dance competition. If he wins, the prize money would be enough to build his own favela house so that he could finally move in with his girlfriend and two young children. All the while, the government incursions are becoming more and more frequent and violent, with demonstrations against the World Cup and Olympics breaking out across the city.

Secret Life of Babies shows how the first two years of our lives are the most critical; we grow more, learn more, move more and even fight more than at any other time in our life. We have more bones in our body at birth than an adult does; yet we don’t have kneecaps. We laugh 300 times a day as a baby, but in the first few months we can’t produce tears when we’re upset. The programme, narrated by Martin Clunes, tells some truly powerful and awe inspiring personal stories; from the baby who survived being blown off a pier in his pushchair, trapping him underwater for six minutes, to the baby whose brain has rewired itself despite the fact that half his brain had to be surgically isolated from his body when he was just a few months old. This heart-warming and often surprising documentary tells the story of what it’s like to be a baby from their perspective. From a baby’s preference for sweet foods and aversion to plants, to the fact that they will have crawled 70 miles by their second birthday, the programme offers fascinating insights into babies’ development.

If I Don’t Come Home Letters From D-Day ITV1, 22.35 This new partly dramatised programme for ITV focuses on four Allied servicemen writing their last letters home to loved ones before D-Day. “My darling this is a very difficult letter for me to write. As you know something may happen at any moment and I cannot tell when you will receive this. I had hoped to be able to see you during last weekend but it was impossible to get away and all the things I intended to say must be written.” Captain Norman Skinner, June 3, 1944 If I Don’t Come Home - Letters from D-Day marks the 70th anniversary of the Normandy landings of June 6, 1944 by bringing to life the written thoughts of the men who took part. Captain Alastair Bannerman was married with two small children, as was Capt Norman Skinner, from the Royal Army Service Corps. Lieutenant Glenn Dickin was a 22-year-old Canadian who had never seen action before, and Leading Aircraftman fitter Maurice Hardstaff was an RAF man who had waited more than four years for this moment to come. Their letters are brought to life by actors including Ben Lamb (as Alastair Bannerman), Samuel West (as Norman Skinner), Seamus Morrison (as Glen Dickin) and Tom Rhys-Harries (as Maurice Hardstaff) and the programme is narrated by Matthew MacFadyen. Using archive footage as well as contributions from the men’s children and other relatives, the programme tells their stories and the story of D-Day itself, with their thoughts about the mammoth task ahead and the very real possibility they might die illustrated through their unique written accounts.

There is nothing in the world that can match the buzz entertainers feel when they have successfully delivered their act. But is the buzz the same in different categories of entertainment? Does a singer get a different buzz to a comedian or a compere? I believe the answer is No. No matter what art it is, if you are performing that art yourself, the ups and downs are the same. Artistes are normally on stage for an hour, and their act is polished to perform for exactly that time. Now imagine an entertainer who performs for almost six hours a night, and entertains the masses in so many different ways. Lee Jackson has been working in Tener-

WE are not far away now from the Tramps’ summer opening party, on 21st June. And just four days later sees the first big event of 2014. Vernon Kay is back for the first of two gigs at Tramps. He plays a two-hour set, and a lot of people ask me whether he actually DJs or not. Let me tell you, he is hands-on for the full set. I was about two-

ife for as long as I can remember, and it is difficult to slot Lee into the category of “entertainer”. He has been at Brannigans Bar, in the Starco area of Las Americas, for over a decade and I like to think of him as the resident Entertainer/DJ/ Compere. Lee has many talents, and has a wealth of experience to draw on. For instance, there is not much he doesn’t know about music from the last 40 years - and he is comfortable playing music across all genres, and

to all ages. He is also well known to the residents in that area, and is always quick to give recognition to other workers and entertainers who visit the bar. Starco is a late-night entertainment area with

feet behind him last year and was, quite frankly, amazed with his skills. Put it this way, if I watched his Family Fortunes on telly before I went to Tramps, I would never dream of seeing the host of the show-dropping trance in the main arena. And I have good news for you, in the form of two VIP tickets to give away. These tickets will gain entry to the VIP bar at the side of the DJ booth, where you will see Vernon at work.

And after the set, you will be able to meet him. Tramps manager Ollie has also throwing in a complimentary bottle of bubbly. Very soon, a video will be posted on Canarian Weekly’s Facebook Page, and you will need to Like & Share it to be in with a chance of winning this prize. The winner will be announced live on Oasis Fm. So if you want to be in with a chance, make sure visit Canarian Weekly’s Facebook page.

most bars opening until 6am. So sometimes, the real party-goers don’t arrive until around midnight. However, Lee is in the bar from 9.30 most nights and enters his booth at 10pm. He has sited his

DJ box right at the entrance behind the bar, where his elevated position enables him to see everyone in the venue. It also allows him to connect with those sitting on the outside. Early on, Lee acts as host and jokes with his audience while getting to know them. He has so many ways of engaging the people in front of him. Behind the DJ box, he has a box of props, including theatrical masks of music stars like Michael Jackson and Will Smith. And I’m sure I’ve seen Britney Spears as well. But it doesn’t stop there. Each mask has a costume and a dance routine, and Lee performs these routines randomly each night. But that’s not all! Each mask-and-dance routine has a video running on the screens, with that artiste doing the same dance. The effect while watching is brilliant and extremely entertaining. So many people have uploaded their video memories to You Tube on the net, so Lee is always coming up with new ideas. Some of the routines have become quite a phenomenon at Brannigans, his Will Smith im-

personation catching on with the audience. And many times over the last 12 months, I have seen the whole bar doing the dance routine together. It is an awesome sight - and a great tribute to the man holding it all together. So there we have comedy, dance and audience participation all rolled into a 10-minute routine. Lee has mastered the art of delivering impact entertainment every 20 minutes or so. He selects every song played during the night and there’s no “background” music. He will play requests, read the audience perfectly and set up his playlist accordingly. And I have to say that I have never seen this guy fail to entertain. The effort Lee puts into his work surpasses any I have ever seen in an individual. Also, with such a varied set of talents, it is obvious why Brannigans is full of happy, party people throughout the summer. Make sure you visit Lee Jackson at Brannigans. Lee told me last night that if you go in to see him this weekend and say, “I saw you in the Canarian Weekly”, he will buy you a shot. What a guy”.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke in the Terrace Bar

Chelsea scores a winner TENERIFE Loves Karaoke’s penultimate heat saw a welcome return to Amarilla Golf’s Terrace Bar.

The venue is a firm favourite on the TLK circuit and it was another fun night. Last year’s heat winner has just competed in Germany’s version of The Voice so there is a fine pedigree! This year, the heat’s trophy was going to be between five singers, who all gave an excellent account of themselves. Mr Versatile Mark was an open book as he came to choose his tunes. “I can really sing just about anything, so I have no idea what I should do” he said during registration. He settled for Robbie Williams’ Let Me Entertain You, and kept with the Robster for his second offering, Take That’s Shine. Young JJ Gibson was a big hit! The confident, smooth-voiced young pup started with Lionel Richie’s All Night Long before ending with Sam and Dave’s classic Soul Man. And there were some of the audience doing double-takes as he resembled his old man, Phil Gibson. The legend would have been proud! Colette was here on holiday and deter-

mined to have a good time. She performed a superb version of Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time, then changed track for the second song, belting out the Stereophonic’s Dakota in some style. Chelsea Philpott was the first contestant to register, and it was to prove an omen for her! She started with a powerful interpretation of Your Song, the version Ellie Goulding covered, and then backed it up with the Sixties’ classic Bobby’s Girl. Last of the contenders was Kacey Wilde who, like Mark, wasn’t sure what to sing. She threw a few ideas in the air. Guns N Roses, Free and finally settled on a super version of Bon Jovi’s Always and ACDC’s You Shook Me All Night Long. It proved to be tough for the judges, who for the first time in TLK numbered five! Well, three and two halves! TLK regular judges John and Michelle were joined by Adi Benson and the Blues Brothers. During the first half, there appeared little between the singers, and this was cemented in the second set of songs. Sometimes, it can be just the smallest margins which separate winning and finishing second. And with the winner straight into the Grand Final in a few days

time, the stakes were high. After a recount, JJ was placed third, while the front two were split by just two points. When you consider that the scoring was out of 400, it was our closest-ever result. And losing out by a grain of sand was Kacey, who went home with the runner-up trophy, leaving Chelsea victorious! She had been a previous heat runner-up, so the form was solid and it was another exam-

ple of giving it another shot. The TLK competition encourages previous entrants to try again, and there is one last chance to join Chelsea in the final this evening (Friday). Leonardos Bar, in central Las Americas, hosts what is always a thrilling heat. Jamie Droo returns to hosting duties - and rumour has it, he will wearing one of his legendary awful jackets! BRINSLEY FORDE It’s always nice when someone special drops in personally with their new CD. Brinsley Forde is an internationally renowned and well respected artiste within the reggae world. But the ex-Aswad star has a soft spot for Tenerife and spends a lot of time here. On Thursday, Brinsley called in to Oasis FM studio with a copy of his new album. Presenter, Jamie Droo was on air at the time and is a huge reggae fan and before Brinsley could leave the studio, Jamie quickly got him on air to talk about his latest project. Urban

Jungle contains 14 tracks which will take you on a journey. He and his production team wanted to bring the old sounds of the 80’s together on this album. From the melodies of UK lovers rock to the deep, easily recognizable, bass lines found only in Reggae music. The album tells a story with salutes to some of the signature sounds that were around 30 years ago. They have captured this perfectly and you will love this album. Brinsley Forde’s Urban Jungle is available to download via iTunes.

By Sue McDonald WITH the forthcoming arrival of another furniture superstore to Las Chafiras, our decision to close our shop in Los Cristianos and adapt our business seems to have been correct.

30th May 2014 - 5th June 2014

Changing with the times Some of these bigger stores can offer prices we just can’t compete with on a day-to-day basis, because they buy in bulk. But I will say that their quality isn’t always what it might be. On the other hand, we live in a disposable society, so if you are happy to buy a sofa and have to replace it within a couple of years, then you won’t have a problem with it. On the other hand, this seems to me like a false economy! We are

now re-upholstering many of the sofa beds we sold over 15 years ago, and they are still going strong! Deco Nuevo has been through so many changes, including moving to smaller premises and changing from supplying furniture packages to individual items, and now working from home, but that is exactly what a business has to do to survive. Nowadays, we specialise in made-to-measure sofas and sofa-beds, reupholstery work, and supplying additional furniture to some of the 500-plus customers from our last 25 years in business. We also make and fit curtains and blinds of all types that are made to measure. This week we have agreed an estimate to furnish a two-bedroom apartment in Torviscas which has just been tastefully revamped, including two two-seater sofas made to fit perfectly in the room. There isn’t any extra

charge for these amendments to the original design, and the clients also change some other elements, such as a higher back, and softer seat cushions. We’ve also quoted for re-upholstering three huge sofas, although we won’t be looking forward to getting them out of the apartment and down the stairs, and also re-upholstering a corner sofa which is 13 years old, but still in great structural condition. We’re also in the mid-

dle of providing various curtaining and blinds for a house in Palm Mar, and organising to fit solar film on some high window areas which provide a fabulous sea view, but provide an unfortunate greenhouse effect in the afternoons. The solar film is practically invisible, yet it will reduce the heat entry by over 50%. If you would like a quote without obligation for any of the items mentioned, just call us on (0034) 922 789 729.

Garden

30th May 2014 - 5th June 2014

Eat pineapple, leaves and all! THE Pineapple Guava is the most beautiful of plants … and it is edible, right down to the leaves!

It’s an easy-care, evergreen shrub. It loves the rain, loves hot, hot sun and is adaptable to a wide range of soils, from acidic to rich. It is considered to be a drought-tolerant addition to the garden,

and survives with relatively little water. But if you want tons of fruit, then give it plenty! Regular pruning does not hurt it, and the yield is that tasty! And another plus is that the Pineapple Guava makes a good windbreak. And, if you live near the sea front, it can cope with salt air without any trouble. Another point to its credit is that it needs

so little care, growing happily on its own with no fuss. Its thick petals are spicy and can be eaten fresh. It grows to about 10 feet, which makes it ideal for those who want to grow fruit but don’t have a lot of space. It can actually be grown as a small tree or a large shrub - and you can even grow them indoors from cuttings. The easiest way to root the tree is to take a

cutting from the bottom of the tree. Make sure the cutting is no more than one-fifth inch in diameter, containing at least three nodes. Also, it is imperative that you use hormone powder, which should be applied to the bottom inch. Use an equal mixture of peat moss, sawdust, pumice and sand to provide the ideal rooting medium – and watch it grow!

Tasty cactus fruit - but be careful CURIOUSLY, the Cereus peruvianus, a large erect, thorny cactus, is grown usually as an ornamental plant in some countries, yet it produces attractive, edible fruits. The nocturnal flowers remain open for one night only! The fruits are thornless and vary in skin colour, from violet-red to yellow. The flesh, which is the edible part of the fruit, is white and contains small black seeds, which are delicious to crunch.

It is a proud, upright plant and many people believe that because it a cactus, it shouldn’t be watered - or it needs just a drop now and then. Actually, it needs to be watered well, but it also thrives with good drainage, warmth, sun and low humidity. This plant is a perfect candidate for a sunny window - absolutely ideal for Tenerife, wherever you place it. You’ll see its pretty flowers all over the place now, because it is

that time of year. And what a wonderful sight to behold as they brighten up the countryside. By all means, help yourselves to the fruits, but be careful. The thorns are as sharp as tacks, and really painful if they get you! The Cereus Peruvianus really is a surprise because the fruit is delicious - and refreshingly juicy. The outer skin is easy to peel and, sometimes, the skin just falls off. But don’t eat the peel!

Health and Beauty

By Val Sainsbury YOUR wealth is a key indicator of the type of cancer you are likely to suffer from.

At least, that’s what scientists in the US have come up with. They have discovered that certain types of cancers are prevalent in different classes. They also found that the more affluent people were likely to suffer from melanoma, thyroid and testicular cancers. But poorer people, they say, are more likely to be diagnosed with cancers of the larynx, cervix, penis, and liver. While these people are less likely to be diagnosed with cancer, they are more likely to die from the disease. Dr Francis Boscoe, of the New York State Cancer Registry, said: “At first glance, the effects seem to cancel out one another. “When it comes to can-

cer, the poor are more likely to die of the disease, while the rich set

are more likely to die with the disease.” The study looked at

the richest and poorest neighbourhoods covering over two-fifths of

the American population. Researchers assigned nearly three million tumours diagnosed between 2005 and 2009 into one of four groupings, based on the poverty rate of the residential census at the time of diagnosis. Certain cancers - Kaposi sarcoma and cancers of the larynx, cervix, penis, and liver - were more likely in the poorest neighbourhoods. But other cancers, such as melanoma, thyroid and testis, were more likely in the wealthiest neighbourhoods. Dr Boscoe added: “Our hope is that our research will illustrate the value and necessity of doing this routinely in the future.” Previous research found that well-off women were more likely to suffer skin cancer. And in the US, more than

90% of the most deadly skin cancers -malignant melanomas - occur in the white population. The researchers found that young women were at highest risk for malignant melanoma if they lived in neighbourhoods which were both wellto-do and sunnier. Other research, from The Christie Hospital in Manchester, found that middle-class people were significantly more likely to develop breast and skin cancer than the less well off. Researchers suggested that career women delaying having children, and exposing themselves more to the sun on foreign holidays, were thought to be behind the gap. They added that social deprivation was linked to lung and cervical cancer because less-affluent people were more likely to smoke and miss smear tests.

Don’t turn a blind eye MORE and more British kids are being registered as blind or partially sighted, say worried campaigners.

Blind Children UK says much of the rise is through more extremely premature babies surviving, with one in 20 likely to be born blind. The charity aims to raise awareness of the warning signs for parents. It highlights signs such as red or cloudy eyes and babies or children reacting badly to bright light - and says parents should seek medical help if these signs are evident. To evaluate the extent of sight problems, the charity looked at data from NHS England, the Welsh Assembly, the Scottish government, the Northern Ireland Health and Social Care

Trusts and the Office for National Statistics. It found that since 2006, there had been a 9% rise in the number of children registered blind or partially-sighted. The biggest increase

has been among underfives, according to the charity, formerly known as the National Blind Children’s Society. Here are some warning signs for mums and dads: *Red, inflamed, watery

or cloudy eyes *Excessive rubbing or poking of the eyes *Puffy or swollen eyelids *Moving or “wobbling” eyes *Unusual posture when looking at some-

thing *Bright light causing discomfort The earlier children are born, the greater the risk they will have a visual impairment. A survey of 130 parents of children with sight

problems found that a quarter said they had to wait longer than a year to have their child diagnosed. Half of those questioned said the delay they experienced in diagnosis had a “negative” effect. Richard Leaman, Chief Executive of Blind Children UK, said: “Every day a child with sightloss goes without support, it dramatically affects his or her development. “As much as 80% of a sighted-child’s learning takes place using vision. Without this, it’s impossible for a young boy or girl to develop fully, and make sense of the world around them. “We help children and their families tackle all the challenges of sight loss, so that they can enjoy their childhood and realise their full potential as adults.”

FASHION VICTIMS?

Fame game is now all about endorsements

By Carl from Robot

By Ruth Benson

YOUR hair is alive - it makes up part of who you are. It tells the world how you feel about yourself and expresses your individuality.

WE are all aware that companies will do anything to get celebrities to endorse their products and, most prominently, fashion designers.

Yet I hear so many people saying that they haven’t touched it for years. So what on earth has happened to make some women give up on their crowning glory? Could it be the expense? The time factor? Or the fact that here in Tenerife, we kind of live in a fashion time-warp? Look at UK TV and you will see on any programme that women there still care about how they present themselves. Back in the UK, we wore the IN thing, and we heard about the must-have item to buy in Spring or Winter. Yet here, all that passes us by. If you still care about what you wear, and still have an eye for this year’s fashions, then why not think the same about your hair? I see so many attractive girls here with good clothes and a sense of style, but I look at their hair and think, “Gees!” I’m not having a go, or thinking I’m any more knowledgeable than most. I’m simply saying that you have

a substance growing from your head that can be your biggest fashion accessory. If it’s cut in the right way, and coloured to enhance your cut, you will have something that looks good, even when your wearing jeans and a T-shirt. Keeping long, wispy locks for the sake of having long hair, or letting your roots grow out to six inches, isn’t going to do any of your outfits justice. If you’re trying to grow your hair, please have it cut to strengthen it. Leaving hair for over a year without cutting it simply means you will have to have more cut off in the end. Visit your salon regularly so that they can help you maintain your look. Listen to their advice about colouring and, most of all, your homecare routine.

Most of us hairstylists don’t enjoy hacking hair off for the fun of it, and it breaks my heart to see unloved hair that could be fabulous. If we advise you to cut off a few inches to save the rest of your hair, or we refuse to carry out a treatment on your tresses, there’s a reason for it. It’s because we care about you hair. What we say to you in the salon is like you visiting the doctor or the dentist. It’s up to you whether you want to get better, or don’t want to lose your teeth. Well, the same applies when we are talking about hair. You have only your sense of trusting when it comes to taking in our advice or not. Most of us stylists do our profession out of love, not for the money!

The front-row seats at a catwalk show may not be all it seems. Not only are the celebrities there to admire the fashions but, in certain cases, to promote them. This is not something new. Back in 2012, British designer Nicole Farhi exposed this common practice when she was quoted by the Telegraph magazine, saying: “It is so unprofessional. I have never paid a celebrity and I will never do it. It’s

stupid, although other designers will hate me for it.” Reports revealed this week the extent to which designers will go to secure a famous face to their label. According to The Sun newspaper, Beyoncé and Rhianna will cost you up to £60,000 to have them seated on the front row. Both the designers and celebrities are on a win-win. Lily Allen admitted that after the 2007 Yves Saint Laurent show in Paris, she went back to the flagship store and was able to take home dresses and accessories worth £5,000. Lily also admitted that part of the reason for coming “out of retirement” was because she missed “the free clothes and handbags”. Depending how popular you are depends on your rating on the PR

“seeding” list. This is a compilation of the 100 most-desirable celebrities who will be sent products that designers hope the chosen celebrity will be “seen” out with. It’s not just in the press that people are being seen to endorse products, but through Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. It is believed that British model Poppy Delevingne was “sponsored” by Superdry for her hen party at the Californian music festival, where photos of her were posted on her Instagram page. Endorsement by celebrities is not new, but more prominent now is the obsession with celebrities and what they do and wear. And in a way, you can see why they are profiting from this with mediums such as social media.

Granadilla’s food fiesta

ONE of the biggest and most eagerlyanticipated culinary events - From Field to Table - will be held tonight (Friday) in Granadilla. It gets underway at 7pm and, officially, finishes at 11pm … but rarely does! The event takes place in the easy-tofind Mena González Square, opposite the Town Hall, and is a showcase fort some of the Island’s finest offerings. There will be a wide range of excellent tapas, wines, sauces and local produce as usual. The initiative is organised by the Town Hall’s Agency for Employment and Local Development, the responsibility of

Councillor Esteban González, and is backed by the Association of Central and Regulators Granadilla Tenerife Wine Advice. Gonzalez said: “This is a great way to showcase all our fine products in one lovely evening. It’s always very popular and extremely good value for money. There are a number of events like this in Tenerife, but From Field To Table evening is always a little different.” A total of 11 Granadilla wineries and eight catering businesses have been specifically chosen, along with a farmer’s market place. They will create a unique atmosphere for visitors and locals in the town’s historic landmark. And the prices are amazing: Tapas and wine will

be sold for one to two euros. Gonzalez added “These initiatives are a good opportunity to publicise the niche products, and boost economic activity. “They are not only a mark of the region but also the quality. And the products of the

local cuisine and wine combine to show off what we can produce from our land.” He added: “I invite everyone to join us and enjoy a world of sensations. Share and enjoy our products and then pass the word on!”

A Senior View & Community News

By Monica Dyson THE Sixties and Seventies were a boom time for party plan here in the UK.

You didn’t actually realise how much Tupperware you needed until you took stock of the amount of it in your cupboards. There always seemed to be something you could place into one of the handy containers. How many of us have looked at our “Party Susan” and wondered what the heck we would actually use it for - or when? Few weeks passed without you being asked to a party in someone’s home. Then you hosted a party, introducing the delights of these plastic containers to your friends. You encouraged some of them to host a party as well, with a promise of the free gift they would receive. You attended their parties

30th May 2014 - 5th June 2014

We needed so much!

and hey, bingo! You had bought enough Tupperware to last a lifetime! Launched at a time when all women were Stepford Wives, wore pinnies and waved their children off to school - and their husbands off to work, doing what men were meant to do and bring home the bacon (and the containers were good for keeping that fresh), Tupperware became an iconic image of the time. Although most popular in America, where it was invented by Earl Tupper, an inventor from New Hampshire, it actually caught on in England as a musthave kitchen accessory in the early Sixties An enterprising and hard-up single American mum called Brownie Wise began hosting Tupperware parties for Earl in her home. She was so successful that she became his head of home sales. The parties were great fun, and included games and refreshments. The bored, suburban housewives loved playing games like “Write an honest advert to

sell your husband”. At first, it was slow to attract custom. Women were not familiar with plastic and had trouble working the “burp” seal. But the empire grew, and, by the end of the Fifties, they were ready to conquer Britain, where increasing consumer wealth, an upwardly-mobile society, and the desire of young housewives to show off their new fashions and hairstyles, made Tupperware parties an instant success. Tupperware has never lost its appeal, but it suffered a slump in sales in the late Seventies, when Ann Summers’ parties gained popularity. These were something completely different and just what women had been waiting for. Without the interference of men, generally dispatched to the pub, women could have a glass of wine, look at sexy lingerie and marvel over sex toys. How many of those they actually bought, and whether the Rampant Rabbits were relegated to a place in the cupboard, unused, rather like Tupper-

ware’s Party Susan, is not known. But they were certainly more fun than the parties to sell little plastic boxes (so I’m told). When, in 2003, it was revealed that The Queen used Tupperware in Buckingham Palace to store her breakfast cereals, the plastic stuff enjoyed a renaissance, although the likelihood of Her Majesty having hosted a girlie Tupperware party is slim! Today, a Tupperware party takes place in the world every two seconds, especially in Russia, and there are vast amounts of money to be made by party organisers. Another name from the Seventies in the UK is Pippa Dee. Also party plan, its clothes sales were so successful that organisers often hired local church halls to cope with the demand for tickets. I can’t remember much about the clothes. I think they were instantly forgettable, with things like baby-doll, static-nylon nighties. But the parties were

Live Arico News

popular for a good period, and it gave women a night out - and the parties weren’t quite so risqué as the Ann Summers’ ones. But a certain Jacqueline Gold was, apparently, so motivated by a visit to a Pippa Dee party that she encouraged her father to consider party plan as he was the owner of the Ann Summers’ empire, of which she is now Chief Executive! In recent years, party plan has branched out into all sorts of areas. There are cooking utensils, skin care, toys, books, candles, jewellery. You name it! The type of sales which don’t involve actually visiting a shop have been ever-popular over the years, being easy and convenient and often home-based. Catalogue-selling was always a good way for housewives to eke out their housekeeping money, with Freemans and Grattan’s especially popular, And the Avon one has become one of the biggest selling of all time. And it is interesting to see that Better-

wear is alive and well. The Betterwear man was a frequent caller when I was young. My mother would buy useful household items, like little cups to put on the top of milk bottles to stop the birds from pecking the silver foil. Milk bottles? Now there’s a blast from the past! He would often give a free gift like the Miracle Needle Threader, ladder stoppers for stockings, egg yolk separators or tiny tins of lavender furniture polish, which we loved and which we used to polish our toys. Surprisingly, Betterwear has stood the test of time and is still going strong after celebrating its 80th birthday. Still, with over 5,000 door-to-door agents in the UK, it has also realised that the Internet is its future, which is why it now has a strong on-line customer base. But nothing beats the feeling of when you realised that there was a piece of Tupperware you hadn’t yet got! And wondered what on earth you could put in it!

Scrappy in the frame now

RE M E M B ER Harry, last week’s Dog of the Week? He came to us when his owners put him out on the street, for which they were denounced by the police.

Well, Scrappy came from those same irresponsible owners. We believe they do not deserve to have him back, or any other dog for that matter. Could you be his forever home and treat him better? He is young and quite timid. But when he gets to know you, he is a loving boy, and small. He is fully vaccinated, sterilised and chipped, and our 110-euro adoption fee covers all of this. Call Elaine on 678 015 653 to arrange a

meeting. Ye Olde Ocean HAVE a cracking afternoon out with us at Ye Olde Ocean on Sunday, 15th June, from 2pm. We are planning a benefit which is already shaping up to be a good one. Jamie Drew will host the afternoon, introducing great acts

like Scott Bateman, Jamie Rourke, Gordon King, Kerry Railton and Tony Kay. And that’s just for starters. There are magnificent prizes in the raffle as well. Top Square again Join us on Saturday, 28th June, from 8pm for our three-monthly bash on the Top Square at San Blas, Golf del

Sur, featuring Robbie Dominic, Abba Twist, Colin Stevens - and more to be confirmed in the next couple of weeks. Be early, and enjoy our regular fundraisers there. Gillian Banks School For the fourth consecutive year, those talented teens from The Gillian Banks Theatre School are back in Tenerife, raising funds for Live Arico and the Helping Hands charity. Put these dates in your diary: Tuesday, 5th August (Restaurant La Cueva) and Thursday, 7th August (Harbour Club, Los Gigantes). Tickets for both events are 20 euros, which include dinner. Anyone who has seen these events will tell you that the outstanding show alone is worth more than the entry fee. Tickets are limited and available now from Suzy q on 629 388 102.

Bullseye for Aaron’s fund FOLLO W I N G weeks of funfilled activities involving the whole of Wingate School - from Nursery to Sixth Form EZE Group topped up the money raised for Aaron Perez Suarez with a whopping 1,250 euro donation.

It came from the final share of the proceeds from the James Wade v Simon Whitlock charity darts event in January. Wingate are collecting money on behalf of

Aaron’s family as they are spending most of their time in Madrid, where their son is receiving treatment for leukaemia, having been diagnosed last September. In all, the amazing total raised so far is 18,366.81 euros and delighted administrator Jonathan Green said: “We, the Community of Wingate School, would like to thank everyone who gave so generously of their time, gifts, money and support. “We hope and pray that Aaron will make a speedy and full recovery to return to our Wingate family as soon as possible.” Dominic O’Reilly,

CEO of Eze Group, added: “Aaron’s illness and situation has touched the hearts of everyone in the Tenerife community. “We’re delighted that, along with money we donated to Helping Hands, The Walk For Life, and the school for disabled in Guargacho, that the rest of the money can go towards helping him and his family at the time they need it most. “The darts event at Showtime wasn’t only a success in its own right, but has now helped us raise and donate 5,000 euros, which has all been put to good use with causes located right here in Tenerife.”

Pet-care tips for children OUR educational programme continued last week, with children aged between three and six from Charco del Pino visiting the refuge.

A fun and educational day helped them understand the care and welfare needs of our inmates and, hopefully, ensuring better conditions for our beloved pets. Spring is normally when we all have the cleaning bug, so if you are having a clear-out and would like to donate items to the refuge, please call 922 778 630 to arrange collection.Handicraft items such as crayons and paint are always needed, with so many children

visiting the refuge, as well as towels, blankets, sheets, collars, leads and dog toys for the refuge’s many dogs.

Everything at the refuge is made predominately from donated and recycled building materials, so if you have any

spare materials to donate, please contact us. The importance of micro-chipping your pet proved true last week when two dogs were brought in to the refuge. Happily, they were both reunited with their owners - so please ensure your pet is microchipped and that the in-

formation is correct and up-to-date to guarantee a quick return of your pet in case it gets lost accidentally. There are more than 200 dogs at the refuge seeking new homes, but maybe you are not able to commit to adopting a dog. But we are always looking for dog walkers in the beautiful, surrounding areas of our Granadilla refuge, with the sea-front close by. If you would like to be involved, contact the refuge or visit at the ap-

pointed opening hours and make a dog or two very happy. Please call for more information, or if you would like to help out in any way, towels and blankets are always needed for the dogs if you have any to spare. They would be very much appreciated by our four legged friends. The refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological park ITER, where the windmills are. We are open to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 2-5pm and on Saturdays between 1-4pm. The refuge is closed Wednesdays, Sundays and on public holidays.

Little Fiat, big impact!

By Jav FIAT have this incredible ability to judge the moment because they know that many people love the small-is-good attitude.

And in this day and age, where money (for most of us anyway), is everything, the Panda is another example of Fiat’s excellence in this segment. Now, they have a budget 4 x 4 and, true to form, it is absolutely brilliant - and cheaper than most. It has all the appeal of the old Panda and will undoubtedly prove one of the best options in this class. If you need a compact city car, which must be frugal with petrol, this Panda is the answer. It’s a tasty little number, pleasing to sit in and, surprisingly, roomy and well-equipped. More than any other

Panda, this fits the bill for everything. And you can’t ask a lot more than that. Okay, it doesn’t have quite the slick, city style of the new Volkswagen Up, but it is considerably more versatile - and a

big improvement on an already-useful and engaging car. This is not the first time the Panda has been offered in this mode - and it won’t be the last. The standard Panda is as spacious, well-priced

and well -quipped as its rivals. And it has an enthusiastic twocylinder engine. Possibly more than any other car-maker, Fiat really understand that a city car is meant to be fun, and this Panda

can add something else.It is higher and more capable than a regular Panda, yet you just know it’s a Fiat production. Refinement levels are pretty good. Wind and road noise, despite bigger tyres,

are kept in reasonable check, and a height increase has no adverse effect on stability; nor have Fiat upset the general handling bias. And from around 14 grand, this is well worth considering.

European licence, or A Spanish one?

By Emma at Motorworld

MANY people do not exchange their British licences for a Spanish one. But if you live here permanently, it is wise to do so.

There are several different ways in which Tráfico deal with such requests. Inscripción This is where the Spanish Authorities make a note on their computer records of your entitlement to drive. The registered details are comprised of driving categories: NIE number, address and date of expiry of the inscription. This process is started by presenting in Tráfico a copy of your current driving licence, pass-

port and Certificado de Residencia. Tráfico will then contact the UK (or any other EU country) to verify the licence. Some 45 days later - or before if verification is received sooner - you go to Tráfico and pay the appropriate fee. You will receive a paper confirming the records shown on their computer or, in some cases, your licence will be sent to Madrid so that your NIE number can be printed on the actual licence. When the inscription has expired, it should be renewed and you will retain your foreign licence. The actual exchange The initial verification process is the same as an inscription and, after verification has been received, there are two types of exchanges. If your licence has never been inscripted, then

you would carry out a “Canje” of the licence. However, if it has previously been registered, then it is a substitution. You will receive a temporary Spanish Drivers Authorisation, which allows you to drive in Spain only - but not in other countries until such time as the actual licence arrives through the post. If you need to drive in another country before

your new licence arrives, then you would need to apply for an International Drivers Permit.

Lost or stolen licence The initial verification process is the same, except

that you cannot present a copy of the licence (unless you have a copy elsewhere or, possibly, your insurers have a copy on file). You will, however, need a police denuncia, and no exchange

can be made if the country does not reply. This often falls outside the 45-day rule, and the easiest way is for the person to ring DVLA officials and ask them to “hurry up with their reply” – a request often not received very well! There is always a fee, which varies between 8.20-31.20 euros, plus administrative costs. Some people, dependent on their age and what they are actually processing, will require a medical done in a Centro de Reconocimiento Médico, of which there are many. The cost is dependent on the number of categories you require. When exchanging a licence, you have the option to renounce any of the other categories you may hold and just have a licence to drive a car.

Cervera’s coup d’etat

By Roscoe

Sabadell 1 CD Tenerife 0

A FIFTH straight 1-0 defeat signalled some serious blood-letting in Santa Cruz as another poor performance effectively finished the season for Tenerife.

And within minutes of the team touching down in the north airport, there were recriminations. Quique Medina, longserving Director of Football, was given the bullet in ruthless fashion. On the surface, he had done a stunning job. He was charged with producing a brand-new, promotion-winning team to get Tenerife out of the third tier, while promoting the young players. He managed that in some style. This year, with the secondlowest wage budget in the league, he has given Alvaro Cervera the tools to keep Tenerife up and flirt with a promotion campaign. All this done in Medina’s first season at the Position

standard. In budget, delivering the goods and with stacks of local lads. Job done. And then this. The rumours have been flying around for ages that Medina and Cervera didn’t see eye to eye on lots of matters. So what, some of you may ask. Well, Medina hired Cervera and had the power to sack him. But after one too many

rows, President Miguel Conception had a tough decision to make. And he has backed Cervera. The man who signed the players who got the team up. In budget. He persuaded Suso to return from Scotland, brought through Ayoze Perez, Bruno and instigated the controversial return of Cristo Martin and Ricardo. Found hidden gems in Moyano,

Ruiz, Sanz, Aridane and Ros. And now fired! From a distance, it seems ridiculous. As ridiculous as Las Palmas sacking their head coach when third in the table and with just two games to go. But maybe, just maybe, Conception has called it right. Only time will tell of course, but what he has done is unique in Spanish football. Alvaro Cervera is now the club’s football manager. He is in charge of all matters on the field. From first team to the under-8s. All transfer matters, backroom staff, budgets, longterm goals. He is our Arsene Wenger if you like. And VERY much a first in Spain. Make no mistake Cervera deserves the chance and, for what it’s worth, I believe he will revel in the role. And he has made a swift start. According to “sources”, Suso and Bruno are all set to sign new deals. Suso had many an offer from “bigger” clubs in Spain and overseas, including a huge club in Scotland who play in green! Bruno has been chased hard by Elche, Betis and Wigan. Also, I wonder if he would have handled the

Ayoze Perez situation a little better? He is also re-signing young goalie Roberto and is said to have a “hit list” in place for next season. This includes Vitolo, who is ready to return from Greece and who has been making the right noises this week. There is also talk that former B team player Airam, who has had another fine season, will swop Cadiz for Santa Cruz. Cervera’s new deal runs for two years and instantly removes fears he would be off to La Liga. There is some talk that he will bring in another experienced coach to work with and the rumours of the return of Jose Luis Oltra are not going away. This weekend, he is in the dug-out for the final home game of the season, and it will be the last time some players pull on the jersey in Santa Cruz. It will be the farewell match, of course, for Ayoze Perez before he moves to Newcastle. But he is not alone. It looks as if they will both start, and I hope the fans show their love for two players who went above and beyond. Chechu Flores and Luismi Loro were instru-

mental in getting Tenerife back to this level. Both had been around the block, but they ran through the proverbial brick wall for the team. Both had their moments in the sun. Luismi netted many a key free-kick or penalty, hit 12 goals last season, none more important than the play-off goal against L’Hospitalet. Chechu would run himself into the ground, and his 89 appearances in three years show the trust put in him. Sporting Gijon are the visitors and the match kicks off at 6pm tomorrow (Saturday). Finally, a hat-tip to Tenerife B, who are still in with a shout of going up to the third tier. They defied the odds to get past Cerceda and now face Varea. They won their section, but La Rioja is not know for its football! They scored over 100 goals in a very weak league and got chinned by Leioa 7-2 over two legs in the first play-offs. They get another roll of the dice, but the Tenerife kids must fancy their chances. Confidence is bound to be low in the Varea camp. The first leg is this Sunday in La Laguna. Kick-off is 12 noon.

Premier League Lo Mismo! The Premier League already has a familiar look to it! Reigning champions Bar 180 A sit at the top level on points with Target Army who have also had a solid start. As have the Target

Titans, although there is an awful long way to go yet. And it looks like being a hard slog for the bottom 3 who have managed to win just 1 point each so far. Naughty Nautas, who flirted with relegation

for long periods during last season, now sit a point clear at the top of Division 1. Looking at the teams in this section, it promises to be very competitive. There are at least 6 teams who could

challenge for the title. And they will all be trying their hardest to get into the premier league of course! Division 2, however, already has a hot favourite in Chipeque Chippers. A cracking

start to their campaign has seen them drop just 1 point so far. There are a couple of unknowns with Waterfall Warriors and The Bar bringing new players into the league this season. It should be interesting to

see how it unfolds over the next few weeks. Of course the question on every ones minds is who will get that coveted wooden spoon? Expect Terrace Bar A to enter a darts team soon! (see pool write up).

Scaling the heights in Adeje Ever fancied rock climbing? The Adeje sports department has organised a series of training days on the climbing wall to ensure that people are shown how to use the installation properly.

Sports councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera has organised the training programme along with the Canarian School of Mountaineering and the Abinque Mountaineering Group aimed at educating people in the correct use of the wall, located in the grounds of the El Galeón sports pavilion. The course will also present certificates to those who complete the course in “proper use and maintenance of the installation

and scaling methods”. The councillor said, “during these training days we will train a group of people who will then be in charge of the development and use of the climbing wall,

or ‘rocódromo’. With this in mind we have asked experts such as Javier Martín Carvajal, and José Francisco González to run the course”. Alonso Ferrera added

that in Adeje all the sporting schools and courses that were running in the borough have trained professionals in charge “so we can ensure that anyone learning or practising

a sport in Adeje is under the supervision of a professional from the relevant sector, which is a quality ‘plus’ and a guarantee from a sporting point of view”. The training course for

the climbing wall will be in two parts, theoretical and practical. The first part will outline the different kinds of climbing walls currently being used, how the structures are constructed, panels and screws used, etc. This section will also look at different problems which can arise, and how to carry out proper maintenance. During the practical section those attending will get to know the two structures in El Galeon and the kind of materials used. They will learn, on site, all the relevant aspects of their construction and maintenance. The students will also be assessed and taught methods or climbing and security during the climb. This will be followed by a series of climbs of differing difficulty and solving various problems which could arise during a climb.

Wood you believe it! THE summer holidays, or halfterm, bit into the Direct Telecom Pool League with a host of postponements.

But there was still some quality action. In Division One, champions-elect Tenerife Hammers A took on the Terrace Bar Suicide Squad. The home team were quickly out of the blocks and into a 4-0 lead. But how things could have been different if Sergio had taken a relatively straight-forward black against Paul. In true Basque form though, it was “incredible” that it didn’t go in! But the Hammers

were never troubled, even though Sergio and captain Adi won a game. But that was scant consolation for the relegationthreatened Amarilla Golf guys. Mal and James were again in woeful form for the Terrace, and it was hard to decide who would get the now-famous wooden spoon. This is turning into a cult award, handed over to the Terrace team’s worst player of the week. It is unofficially called the Mal Lonsdale award and, true to form, an in-off on his break gave him the wood again! Gaffers A got the better of Hammers C by the same 10-2 scoreline. Tony put

in a fine captain’s performance to take two frames for the Hammers, but he couldn’t inspire his team-mates, who

remain in a relegation rumble. There was a great local derby in Los Abrigos as Phoenix Knights, who look

to have sown up third place, took on neighbours La Caña A. The Knights, though, brandished their cues as if they were lances and made swift work of the game, dropping just one game. It would have been a long walk around the corner for the dejected La Caña boys. In the remaining match Dreamers A who had a slow start to the season, hosted Inn the Pink A with a chance to move back into fourth spot. It was a close game which went to the final frame before Dreamers nabbed the win. It has been a strong finish by the Los Cris team, and Gav will be pleased the season is shortly over because he is wearing his shoeleather down with all the laps of the table he does! Down in the Second Division, the top two teams were not in action this week. But in-form Kandi 13, who have beaten the top two teams recently,

showed no mercy to fifth-placed Bluebell B. The Kandi Kids have given themselves a chance of a top-five finish now. How they wish they could have played like this earlier in the season. In a mid-table clash, 2JZ’s travelled to Gaffers bar to take on Gaffers C, with just three points separating them. It was an opportunity for 2JZ’s to move clear of Gaffers C. But Gaffers quickly took advantage and raced to a 5-0 lead. They must have thought the points were theirs, but their opponents rallied and got themselves back into it, finishing honours even. But the Gaffers will be disappointed. Treehouse B had a good result in taking the points from Hoppy’s bar in a decent encounter And in the final game of the week, Next Door beat Toscales B in what was a comfortable night for them.
