King Juan Carlos hands the reign to Prince Felipe SPANIARDS woke up to some stunning news on Monday morning as King Juan Carlos abdicated.
The move, though widely predicted, has sparked furious constitutional debate. The 76-year-old ruler will hand the throne to his son, Prince Felipe, (pictured bottom right) on 18th June. He is the third European monarch to step aside in recent years, following the abdications of King Albert II of Belgium and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. Juan Carlos, who has been in poor health, has had five operations in the last two years. He decided to abdicate back in January and has done so for political reasons. His move has long been rumoured, but it still caught many people off guard. King Juan Carlos came to power in 1975, just hours after the death of Francisco Franco. The then youthful new King united the country and, along with an eager Government, helped push through a range of reforms after decades of dictatorship. He was immensely popular in Spain and in foreign courts. The dashing Monarch had a string of none-too-discreet affairs - and this week there have been reports that he may have bedded as many as 1,500 women. He was also extremely flirty with Princess Diana on a couple of occasions! Despite all this, he remained popular and was a calming voice in discussions with leaders of independenceminded regions such as Catalonia. He earned plaudits for his humanity after the terrible Madrid bombings in March 2004, which claimed nearly 200 lives. But his popularity has nosed-dived recently following a number of
scandals. The financial meltdown led people to question the role of the Monarchy, and an ongoing financial scandal involving his daughter remains front-page news. And his now infamous 2012 elephant-hunting trip in Botswana, which provoked worldwide rage and caused him to resign as president of the WWF, was seen by many as the last straw. The handing over of the throne will take place on 18th June with the crowning of Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. The 46-year-old prince and his glamorous, for-
mer TV presenter wife, have been busy with public appearances this week despite the news. They carried out a long-advertised visit to an awards ceremony in Navarra in Pamplona, where they received a standing ovation. The soon-to-be-king seemed genuinely touched at the reception. He has already promised to “deliver a united Spain”. During a brief speech at the awards, he called on institutions, society and citizens to place the common good ahead of their particular interests to
overcome the current economic crisis in the country. The Prince added: “The circumstances leading to my first words after the announcement of His Majesty is, ironically, in this beloved land of Navarra, which is one of our originating Spanish countries.” Prince Felipe’s ascension has met with widespread praise. Canarian Government President Paulino Rivero stressed that King Juan Carlos had been “a fundamental leader in the transformation of Spain and to the consolidation of democracy”. He added: “The King has been instrumental in the Spanish democracy and, under him, we have lived the period of greatest social and economic development. “In my view , the Monarch has always proven to be someone who has a deep knowledge of the Canary Islands and the archipelago. I hope the next king of Spain is the same.” Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy addressed the nation with the news on Monday, saying: “I want to communicate the will of the King to renounce the throne and begin the process of succession. “King Juan Carlos is
a historical figure, so closely linked to the Spanish democracy that we cannot be understood without each other. “I want to pay tribute to the person who, for 39 years, has embodied the meeting point between the Spanish in peace, knew how to be a bastion of democracy when threatened, and has been the best speaker and the best image of Spain.” Rajoy and his government had to rush through new legislation
to enable the King to step aside and be replaced by the Prince. While this was unopposed in Parliament, it did give the “republican movement” ammunition. More than 20,000 demonstrators held a snap rally in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol Square in support of the end of the Monarchy. Thousands more descended on Barcelona’s Catalunya Square, and petitions have appeared online, with one collecting 113,000 signatures. A growing band of republicans are calling for Spain’s political parties to take advantage of the abdication to hold a referendum on the Monarchy issue. Demonstrators carrying dozens of republican flags shouted slogans such as “Tomorrow, there will be a Republican Spain”. The protest co-spokesperson Juantxo López de Uralde said: “We are delighted with the turn-out and the message it sends. “My hair has turned white out of waiting for a Spanish Republic. It has still not arrived, but with the abdication of the King, we are claiming that it’s time to give a voice to the people.”

Canarian Day rioting over oil-drilling pact CANARY Island officials have demanded an explanation from the Spanish Government about last week’s rioting during the Día
de Canarias celebrations at the Guimerá Theatre in Santa Cruz. The Canarian Government complained of what it called “inadequate deployment” of police to deal with the angry crowd.
They were protesting against oil exploration off Canary Island waters, which has been backed by the central government, despite a huge protest from the Canary Islands Government. Protesters stormed the stage, cutting proceedings short
to the point that the traditional Canary Hymn was not performed. Locally, this was seen as a deplorable act against Canary Island residents. Australia Navarro, from the rival People’s Party, accused Canarian President Paulino Rive-
ro of “inciting legal disobedience and rebellion”. She also said he had been “encouraging or tolerating physical and verbal violence and sectarianism,” calling for immediate condemnation of the invasion, or Rivero’s resignation. The regional government’s point of view, differed somewhat. Its statement read: “It is incomprehensible, given the increase in the number of protesters in the areas around the theatre, that more resources were not put in place to ensure the
safety everyone in attendance.” Tempers are frayed because the Central Government lifted restrictions on the processing of a declaration of Areas of Community Importance (LIC), just 24 hours after approving oil-drilling off Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Fuerteventura Cabildo president Mario Cabrera is convinced there is an “agenda” at work, which he believes is “an agenda perfectly designed with oil interests in mind”.
Rivero’s plea for
‘democracy’ PRESIDENT Paulino Rivero has called for “more democracy” among Canary Islands residents.
Canarians are losing their purchase power THE average monthly salary in the Canary Islands is 259 euros less than the average for the whole of the country (3,108 euros per year), and 597 euros less than the average salary in Europe (7,164 euros per year). And the gap is widening, and this is having a drastic effect on purchasing power. A study by temp agency Adecco reveals that the average salary in the Canary Islands in 2013 was 1,375 euros a month - almost 16% lower than the 1,634-
euro average for the whole of Spain. In any economy, salaries determine spending power, and have an effect on the competitiveness of the country overall. Salaries in the Canaries have not improved since 2008, and have fallen further behind those in other autonomous regions. In 2013 alone, the average wage in the Canaries fell by 1.5%, following falls in 2010 and 2012. But wages didn’t fall in every sector. In Industry, salaries rose
gradually during the recession, posting an overall rise of 10.7%. Construction and services, on the other hand, showed gradual declines of 2.9% and 1.4% respectively. These salary drops may not look too depressing, but when balanced against the increased cost of living in the same period, they paint a depressing picture. Adecco’s report shows a drop in purchasing power of 7.7% from 2008 to 2013 in
the Canary Islands. This is equivalent to a monthly loss of 111 euros, as opposed to 70 euros for the rest of Spain. To recover the purchasing power Canary Islanders had in 2008, an average salary rise of 111 euros per month would be needed. The Service sector has not fared too badly, with tourism again propping up the sector. Average wages in the Canaries for the service industry are at 1,915 euros a month.
He wrote in his weekend blog post that people should participate more to meet the challenges the future poses, and added: “I maintain a firm conviction to defend a closer, more participatory and more mature democracy.” He advocated a “people-centred” democracy, along with “social and territorial cohesion” which, in his opinion
will “enable us to come together and meet the major challenges we have now, and the may we will face in the future with maximum transparency.” Rivero believes the public’s response to these challenges will be the measure of their democratic spirit, saying that participation will make their progress “unstoppable”” He also said that Canary Islands’ citizens should “listen and take note, and firmly commit to closeness and participation which will allow their aspirations to be addressed”.

A Facelift for Adeje schools WORK is being carried out by Adeje’s Education Department to improve the schools’ facilities there.
Education Councillor Andrés Pérez Ramos, has released details of a number of ongoing works in some of the borough’s public schools. Primary schools in Las Torres and Armeñime, and the El Galeón secondary school, are affected. Ramos said: “For Adeje Council, education is a fundamental service. Our job is to ensure that our educational centres are the best possible for our students in Adeje and, therefore, any work which might improve the learning centres for our student population is a priority.” The Councillor also stressed that it was always important to ensure that the local public educational centres were safe places. And, with this in mind, most of the work will be
carried out during the summer. But he added: “In some cases, we have been able to make some improvements during the school term, with the more extensive jobs scheduled for the summer. In the Las Torres primary school, the library has been extended and now includes a study and reading zone, with another area dedicated to video and a consultation section. This work was completed in two phases with an investment of over 22,000 euros, financed jointly by Adeje Council and the Department of Education. In the Armeñime school, the sports courts were renovated, and a wall near the garden area was also repaired. A triangular garden in front of the main hall was removed to allow easier movement of students and staff through the school. Finally, in the El Galeón institute, a school garden is being created as part of a future recreational zone.
Rajoy ‘relaunches’ economy SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has announced investment totalling 6,3 Billion euros in a bid to boost the country’s economy.
The Premier said funds would be directed towards infrastructure, re-industrialisation and energy-efficiency among others. The money will be provided by the private sector (2,670m) and from public funds (3,360m). The Plan of Action for growth, competitiveness and efficiency is being rolled out as part of the 2014 National Reform Programme. It was launched in Brussels and aims to
“further progress in improving the present competitiveness and the future of the Spanish economy”.
Most of the measures will be launched in the second half of this year, and include 750m euros for re-industrialisation
and industrial competitiveness, 325m euros for the Technological Innovation Fund, and over 600m euros for the Cen-
tre for Industrial and Technical Development to boost research and development. In addition, 800m euros will go towards lifting small and medium business enterprises (PYME) as part of an EU initiative to increase loans to such companies. This will be funded with joint resources from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and other European sources. It will create the National Energy Efficiency Fund, for which up to 350m euros a year will be provided by the European funds. Public and private partnerships are to be formed in several areas, such as improvements to port accessibility and “urgent” investment in
sewage treatment. Clean and efficient transportation is also set to benefit with the Pima Aire 4 plan, which will encourage the purchase of electric commercial vehicles, as well as grants to encourage scrapping of older vehicles in favour of more energy-efficient motors. With the promotion of electric vehicles, plans will be made to provide a network of vehicle-charging stations throughout the country. Employment is also high on the agenda; Rajoy expects the Cabinet to review a new jobs’ package before the summer, which will include reforms to employment training, together with several measures for youth training and education strategies.

Two drilling Another Juan platforms bites the dust! to settle in Santa Cruz KING Juan Carlos’ abdication this week has reignited some old fires in the media.
It didn’t take long for the Republicans in Spain to rear their head, while it’s only a matter of time before the Basque region and Catalonia start their independence push. In the UK, of course, it started another round of debate on Queen Elizabeth, who is 88 now. But boy, she looked good opening Parliament! She is tough, wise and going nowhere. I don’t think it’s in her makeup to even consider “retiring”. God Save The Queen. Meanwhile back on the Rock, another week and another great effort from our community. I hope you enjoy our piece on the Lions and all the hard work they do. Norman and his army of helpers are brilliant, and while everyone has his/her charities and
causes, the Lions deserve all the help and praise they receive. As does Liz and the crew at Helping Hands. I think everyone knows what great work they do, so I’m delighted to tell you how you can help them this coming week. Justin Muscat is one of the good guys on the Island and he has generously donated his “Muscat” catamaran for a special cruise. On Thursday, at 10am, there is a special sailing where all the kids and teachers from the Guargacho school will enjoy the three-hour sailing trip! And you can be there as well. There is a special charter price for this sailing, and monies raised will go back to Helping Hands. For more details, call Justin on 691 674 556 or Liz on 661 274 281.

IF you have been to Santa Cruz in the past day or two, it won’t have escaped your notice that there are now two drilling platforms off the coast of the capital.
First to arrive was the GSF Arctic I, which will remain until November. It was unable to dock initially because of high winds and had to remain three miles off the coast for eight days. Yesterday (Thursday), it was set to be joined by the Ensco-owned ENSCO 6000, which arrived from Brazil on board semi-submersible vessel Finesse. The GSF Arctic I carries the flag of Vanuatu, an island nation in the South Pacific and weighs 12,072 tonnes. It is 79 metres long, 63
metres wide and just under eight metres deep. Its appearance may have been seen as cause for concern, but it will not be operational. Its stay should bring in revenue of 75,000 euros to the Port Authority, and another 40,000 euros for the operating company, which will be hiring out cranes, tugboats and other supplies to local businesses. The GSF Arctic I is owned by Transocean Offshore, which also owns the SEDCO 710, currently at the east dock in the capital. The ENSCO 6000 was expected to dock yesterday (Thursday) at the Muelle de Ribera de Los Llanos, close to the GSF Arctic I. The ENSCO 6000 is 62 metres long, 44 metres wide and is expected to stay for three months initially, with an option to renew for longer.
Your Emails Dear Editor I was wondering if you could help me. I live in Brighton, in the UK, and I recently bumped in to an old school friend called Maria Brito when she was holidaying in Brighton, UK. She gave me a contact number, but I think I may have got one or two digits wrong, and now I cannot find her. It’s a simple message: Silvana Galea from Brighton, UK is looking for Maria Brito! She went to Cardinal Newman school. I have posted a message on friends reunited explaining what has happened, and also left my contact details, so if she could log on to the Friends Reunited site, she will find me. All I know is that she works in a hotel as a receptionist, and I know that you have hundreds of hotels in Tenerife. I just thought I would have one last try to find my lovely friend. I hope you can help. Best wishes, Silvana Galea Rock Clinic East, 270 Eastern Road Brighton, BN2 5TA 01273 621841 office@rockclinic.org.uk www.rockclinic.org.uk

Long-term Muslim fears of Birmingham schools THE British Government was told in 1994 that Muslim hard-liners were even then infiltrating schools in Birmingham.
It has been revealed that senior leaders at three schools there were so concerned about the influence of Muslim extremists that they took their fears to the top. The head teachers, in a joint letter to education ministers - copied to then Prime Minister John Major - said extremist group Hizb utTahrir was gaining an alarming influence over schools in the city. John Ray, former governors’ chairman at Golden Hillock School, had a meeting with then education minister Emily Blatch to express his worries. He believes that had the government acted then, the current trend, in which
conservative Muslims have been able to dominate school leadership, may have been averted. “This is a mess the city council has not been able to check the development of this whole infiltration of this ceding in of governors of one particular ideology,” he said.
“They are not people who have the welfare of these children at heart.” Like many, Mr Ray believes the content of a so-called “Trojan Horse letter”, which alleges a plot to oust non-hardline Muslims from schools in Birmingham, is a fake. But he maintains the con-
cerns themselves are very real. He resigned after 25 years as a governor at Golden Hillock School - one of the schools at the centre of the alleged plot - last year when it was taken over by the Park View Educational Trust. This organisation is headed by Tahir Alam,
who is accused of exerting pressure on state-funded, secular schools to conform to conservative Islam. But Mr Ray’s claims are disputed by Mohammed Shafique, another former chair of governors of Golden Hillock School. He said: “John Ray never expressed any concerns, never asked ‘why have you joined the governing body’? Never asked me about my views, what my ideology was for joining the governing body. “I’m quite concerned that he can actually say there was a mass movement to go into governing bodies. I certainly haven’t experienced it at Golden Hillock School, or another school I was governor at.” Concerns about Tahir Alam and the influence of the Park View Educational Trust have led to high-level investigations by Ofsted, the
Department for Education and Birmingham City Council. Golden Hillock is now expected to be placed in “special measures” following the results of an Ofsted inspection, to be published next week. The Department for Education says it has been tackling extremism in schools since 2010, and Birmingham City Council is conducting a probe which will also look at retrospective evidence. But details of claims going back two decades will place further pressure on the authorities to explain why it took so long to act. Mr Ray added: “I think the city council, but also central government and all parties, were reluctant to question the received wisdom that suggests it is fair enough that a separate Islamic identity should be stressed.”
Canaries’ jobless tally drops again THE number of jobless people in the Canaries fell by 2,374 in May, bringing the total to 274,412 and continuing the recent trend for month-on-month drops.
The 21,950 tally represents a fall of 7.41%
against the same period last year. By province, there were almost identical percentage falls; Gran Canaria’s Las Palmas saw 1,249 fewer unemployed people (-0.85) and Santa Cruz saw a drop of 1,125 (-0.87%). Overall, 141,365 women are unemployed in the Canary Islands, as opposed to 133,047 men, and the 18-25 age group accounts for just under
7% of the total (18,805). The Service and Construction sectors still account for the higher numbers of unemployed people, registering 198,762 (72.4%) and 39,940 (14.5%) respectively. These groups are followed by those who have never had a job (17,387 or 6.3%), Industry (12,505 or 4.5%) and Agriculture (6,318 or 2.3%).
Unemployment fell in all these sectors, except for Agriculture, and the biggest fall in unemployment was seen in the construction sector (down by 1,750 people) and Services (down by 469 people). New job creation saw 50,985 contracts signed, up by 4,127 on April (+8.81%). Of these, 5,648 were permanent contracts.

High cholesterol so deadly in Canaries ALMOST half of people in the Canaries have high cholesterol, which can be a killer!
The Canary Islands’ Cardiology Society and the LGS laboratory, as part of their Life Without Cholesterol campaign, studied 32,640 people, who took free blood tests. The results showed that almost half of them
had higher than normal levels. cardiovascular problems. Those carrying out the survey recommend that all participants have further checks with their doctors, as well as increasing exercise and improving their diets. The results were disclosed in El Hierro because the LGS mobile lab, which carried out the tests, was there at the time, continuing checks in several areas of the is-
Jesús Morales, the Councillor responsible, said good progress had been made in recent years in addressing the problem, but admitted there was still a good way to go. But the desalination plant at El Reventón, near Icod de los Vinos, should have restrictions lifted by the end of this summer, The four-stage plan includes increasing the capacity of the desalination plant from 3,500
m³ per day to 5,000 m³, which will cater for much of the population, including those at Teno Alto. A second expansion is planned for the Santa Cruz plant, which will redirect some of its supply to the Northern areas where fluoride levels are still too high. The idea is to mix both supplies to the point where levels are acceptable and safe. And a plan will be executed close to Buenavista Golf to improve water quality, as well as work around Los Realejos, to reduce fluoride levels in the Acentejo area.
We’ll drink to this..! THERE have been drinking restrictions on the domestic water supply in several areas in the North of Tenerife!
That’s because of excess levels of fluorine, a pale-yellow gas prevalent in areas where there are volcanoes. Flouride is a fluorine compound, which can
be added to the water supply to help prevent tooth decay. But it can have implications on health in excess. The issue will finally be addressed by the Cabildo, along with the Island Water Council (Ciatf), which is planning desalination and more ground-water to the supply. Four short-term projects are planned to lower fluoride levels and allow the restrictions to be lifted.
land. The initiative has been ongoing for years in the Canaries, creating a “health map” for the islands regarding cardiovascular risk factors. The campaign also promotes healthy living choices, including the introduction of more fruit, vegetables and yogurts, enriched with plant sterols. The laboratory’s general director, José Manuel Sánchez, who was also involved, said: “The
Canaries is one of the areas in Spain with the highest rate of morbidity, because of this kind of illness.” It is estimated that in Spain, around 45% of the population suffer from hypercholesterolemia, which worrying. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says a high cholesterol level can reduce the sufferer’s lifespan by as much as 7.5%, and that it is totally unnecessary and reversible.
‘Fake contracts’ gang nabbed NATIONAL police agents, working with Immigration and the Border Brigade, have arrested five people over the sale of fake work contracts.
A further six have been implicated in the investigation, which revealed that fake contracts were being sold for up to 2,000 euros each. Charges of forgery have been brought against those arrested. The main person involved in “Operation Pinzón”, developed in collaboration with the Provincial Labour Inspectorate and the Social Security’s General Treasury, is a Spanish national. Others are of Nigerian and Senegalese origin, according to police reports. The investigation began last September, when several foreigners were detected while renewing or applying for residence certificates via a company which appeared obsolete. It is alleged to have provided work contracts for the foreigners despite, not actively trading. The
company was linked to the prime suspect, named as administrator. He is believed to have forged contracts in maintenance and cleaning positions in complexes, and for elderly people, as well as non-existent office jobs. In return, the “employees” paid their own Social Security contributions and as much as 2,000 euros for their “contracts”. As well as offering fake contracts to foreigners, the “company” also sold contracts and pay slips to Spanish nationals believed to have used the paperwork to claim benefits fraudulently, including dole, or “paro” payments. The activity was being carried out mainly in Santa Cruz, but it was also extended to here in the South, via an intermediary of Senegalese nationality. He was said to have offered the services on behalf of the head of the organisation. The ringleader is also believed to have withheld Social Security contributions paid by the clients amounting to around 40,000 euros, as well as amassing a further 8,000 euros in contract sales.

Beware the heat!
AS the summer temperatures start to kick in, Spain’s Health Ministry has issued preventive measures in case of extreme temperatures.
The guidelines are especially applicable to the most vulnerable members of the population - the elderly, children and people with chronic illnesses. A heatwave alert will
be sparked if the minimum and maximum temperatures exceed a certain threshold: for the Canaries, it must exceed 23°C (73°F), and the maximum must exceed 33°C (91°F). The Government’s plan has four temperature levels: if the minimum and maximum temperatures do not reach the threshold, the risk is considered “level zero,” and is signified by the colour green. The next level is “yellow”, for when temperatures exceed the thresh-
olds for one or two days. Level 2 is orange and will be put into place if the threshold temperatures are expected to be exceeded for three or four days. And the highest - Level 3 (red) - is if there is a big risk of the threshold temperatures being exceeded for five or more days. Information regarding temperatures and forecasts will be The colours refer to “levels” and are not “alerts”, as is commonly misunderstood.
Birds and the bees ...a touchy subject MORE and more parents are having sex talks with their children who are still in primary school.
A survey of more than 5,000 parents found that seven out of 10 British kids had discussed topics about sex, puberty and pornography by the time they were 11. Many say they’ve had to have the conversation with their children at least five years earlier than they had the same chat with their own parents. Most blame their children’s curiosity on things they have seen online. Parents picking up their children from a junior school in Cheshire told Sky News they agree
with the findings of the survey. One father of a 10-yearold girl says his daughter is already asking questions. And Dr Leslie Haddon, a senior researcher at the London School of Economics, who has studied how children use the internet, says the “loss of innocence” for childen has long been underway “It’s down to social media, Twitter and Facebook, and they’re more inquisitive now than my generation,” he adds. A mother-of-two agrees, and although her eight-year-old son has not yet asked questions, her 13-year-old daughter began discussing the facts of life while still in primary school. “It worries me a lot, but I’ve got a policy of be-
ing extremely open with her,” she said. “I do try to find out where she gets it from, but I don’t always get to the bottom of it.” According to the study, carried out by internet security firm AVG Technologies, the topic most parents dread discussing with their children is pornography. Almost half said their biggest concern was children seeing inappropriate content online. Dr Haddon believes that sexualised images becoming more and more available in newspapers, on TV and the internet is to blame. “You wouldn’t say that all these things are attributable to the internet,” he says. “But nowadays, you can come across more things.”

EU’s taxing UK command THE European Commission has urged the UK Government to raise taxes and tighten up its Help To Buy scheme.
The EU’s executive body has called on the Government to increase the sum it collects in taxes to help it cut the deficit. Officials say policy has so far been “heavily skewed” to spending cuts, but Prime Minister David Cameron says it is “too big, too bossy and too interfering!” Commissioners say the Tory-Lib Dem coalition should be “prioritising capital expenditure to boost the fragile recovery”. Many of the recommendations are about the housing market, in-
cluding a call for more homes to be built and for adjustments to Help To Buy. And many experts have already warned that it is causing a potentially- damaging housing bubble. A new report from Nationwide that showed house prices had risen for the 13th month in a row. The “regressive” council-tax system was also in the Commission’s firing line officials saying: “At the moment, increasing property values are not translated into higher property taxes as the property value roll has not been updated since 1991. “And taxes on highervalue property are lower than on lower-value property in relative terms.” The Commission praised action on ex-
tending childcare provision and reforming welfare, but it said more must be done on apprenticeships and
skills. Recommendations on economic policy have been made for all countries. It comes af-
ter the European elections were dominated by anti-EU sentiment, with people protesting about the powers of the unelected European Commission. But a British Treasury spokesman said the recommendations were “in line” with the Government’s approach. Mr Cameron is currently battling moves to appoint arch-federalist Jean-Claude Juncker to president of the Commission, as he bids to renegotiate Britain’s EU deal. The PM reportedly warned at the weekend that the UK could quit the union if Mr Juncker were appointed. The Commission’s economic suggestions have provoked anger among politicians and some campaigners. Matthew Elliott, chief executive of Business
for Britain, said: “This is further evidence that the EU should be let nowhere near tax policy of its member states. “Leaders in Brussels appear not have taken on board the resounding message from the recent elections that Britain wants less interference from the continent - and not more.” A Treasury spokesman said: “The Government’s long-term economic plan is working, delivering economic security for hardworking people. “The European Commission continues to support the UK Government’s strategy, including its commitment to deficit reduction. “The Commission’s recommendations are in line with the Government’s approach.”

Another roaring success for Lions! We have all seen the donation box on the bar top, or dug deep for some fund raising event. But what actually happens to all the money that is raised by the brilliant hard working Lions?
In the Lions own words.... IT was all-change with the Tenerife Isla Sur Lions’ Dream Holiday destination this year. Instead of the UK, last week they headed for mainland Spain and the Costa del Sol, staying at the Marconfort Hotel in Torremolinos for a week. Lion’s President Norman Goodall said: “When we did our holiday planning and budget review, we had two main criteria in mind. “Firstly, we wanted to achieve the best holiday we could provide for the kids and, secondly, the best value for the money we raise in our charity shops and, that generously given by the public and businesses alike. “Having compared the same holiday requirements for the UK and mainland Spain, we felt the latter offered the best overall value in a number of areas: notably cheaper, shorter flights, same currency
and language, familiar food and the continuing cover of the Spanish Health System.” So groups from the Orobal and Downs Associations met at Tenerife North airport for the start of the holiday. It was clear that there was a great deal of excitement within the groups because, for many, it was their first experience of air travel, and the anticipation of what was going to be a fun-filled week. Initially, there were four planned trips organised with the help and assistance of the local Spanish Lions’ clubs. But when members met the kids, they acted spontaneously, organising and funded two additional trips for them. They began on the Friday with a trip on the Benalmadena Cable car, which took them high
over the Costa del Sol and gave them a breathtaking view of the area. They later watched an exhibition featuring birds of prey. Then, on Saturday, the group visited Tivoli World Amusement Park where they had unlimited access to over 37 attractions.
This proved to be extremely popular, with the kids enjoying the many rides there, in particular the Log Flume with the youngsters, their carers and even Lions’ co-ordinators getting a thorough soaking. Sunday was a more sedate day, with horsedrawn carriage rides around the beautiful town of Mijas, followed by a lunch and time to explore the town. Tuesday took them to the Crocodile Park where, among others, Lion’s co-ordinator Margaret was persuaded to hold a crocodile albeit a baby. There was another unscheduled outing that day with a surprise visit to Fuengirola’s BioParc, organised by the local Lion’s club. It is a beautiful nature park conservation pro-
ject for endangered species in the heart of town. With the holiday rapidly drawing to a close, the day for the farewell fiesta was made all the more special with another surprise visit, this time to the fantastic Nerja Caves, followed by a paella lunch, served from gigantic pan on the Nerja beach itself. The day was rounded off with members of the local Lions clubs joining the kids, carer staff and Lions co-ordinators for the evening meal, prior to the farewell party. At the start of the party, Tenerife Isla Sur Club President Norman Goodall, who had joined the group at his own expense, thanked all those who had made the whole holiday possible. He added special thanks to the local Li-
ons Clubs for their additional support, presenting plaques to commemorate the occasion. With the formalities over, the party got underway - and what a party it was, with everyone joining in the dancing ,along with the kids. There was a special Gangnam Style performance from some of the boys, which brought a huge round of applause. As the party drew to an end, so did the holiday itself. It had been great to see these special kids enjoy themselves and to share some of the many happy, sometimes hilarious, moments with them. Norman added: “It is not possible to thank individually all who helped, supported and funded the holiday because it would read like the credits of an epic movie. However a big thanks to Admiral Travel, the cabin crews of Vueling flights VY3277 & 3276, the MarConfort Hotel staff, Rios coaches and the Lions Clubs in Malaga for their tremendous and enthusiastic assistance, as well as the many others behind the scenes. Suffice it to say that you are the Dream Makers! Did the “Change achieve all that it envisaged? The answer is a resounding YES - and LOT MORE!

Auction Rooms
still going strong
Saturday the 14th June will see the 150th Auction at Tenerife Auction Rooms. When it started in 2009, it was the very first Auction House in the whole of Spain. For those of you that watch TV programs such as Antiques Road Trip, or Flog It, you will recognize it as a typical UK Auction House. Once a fortnight, on alternate Saturday mornings buyer arrive from all over the Island to pick up a bargain and the diversity of items being auctioned is simply amazing. There is always a full selection of furniture, both modern and traditional being auctioned such as sofas, dining room suites, beds and garden furniture and likewise fridges, freezers, washing machines, flat screen TV’s, toasters, kettles and food mixers. The auction maintains a high bar when it comes to quality and only items in new or as new condition are accepted for auction. Apart from household items, the auction frequently puts unusual lots under the hammer. For example last weeks
auction included two life size Blues Brothers figures, and over the past 5 years the auction has sold boats, cars, motorcycles and even a 40ft wingspan hangglider. Viewing day on Fridays from 9am until 5pm gives clients the opportunity of picking up a free catalogue and inspecting all the lots being sold the next day, and on Saturdays, the auction opens at 9-30am
and the auction stars at 10-30. On arrival buyers register for a free bidding card simply by giving their name and phone number and the highest bidder wins the lot. Payment for winning lots is on the day in cash plus 10% commission and if required the auction can arrange delivery at competitive rates. David Penny of Universal Exports is
the Auctioneer and introduces and sells each lot making sure no bidder is overlooked. The auction restricts the amount of lots sold at each auction to around 180 items and proceedings are usually completed by 12-30. In the week before the Auction, work behind the scenes includes offering the sellers a valuation service and agreeing reserve prices
should the sellers have a minimum figure they don’t wish to drop below. Sellers fees are 20% of the selling price plus a one euro registration fee and they are paid out in cash from Tuesdays following the auction. Rex Anderson and his team work hard to insure everyone is given a warm welcome and on viewing day give assistance with guide prices for any lots the visitors are interested in. Most of the lots being sold are photographed prior to the auction and displayed on their facebook page “Tennerife Auction Rooms” and its not unusual to receive over 20,000 hits prior to proceedings. To help buyers who are unable to attend the auction Rex provides a Book Bids / Commission Bids service. This is really handy for those of us that work weekends and what happens is that, if you cannot be at the auction, you can leave a bid on as many items as you are
interested in buying as you like. Say for example you fancy buying Lot No 50, a Coffee Table and the guide price is 10 to 24 euros. You decide to leave a Book Bid of 18 euros. If bidding on the day reaches 14 euros, then the Auctioneer will bid on your behalf 15 euros and if there are no further bids in the room you win the lot for just the 15 euros. They then telephone you with the good news and you can pay and collect the Lot on the following Monday. If of course bidding goes higher than your Book Bid, then you are out bid and don’t win the lot. For auction clients who buy large items, a next day delivery service is provided by Chris Van Johnson at discounted rates. Tenerife Auction Rooms is situated in Calle Caracas on the Chafiras Industrial Estate, at the top of Amerilla Golf Road, just past the ITV Station and Rex can be contacted on 609 303 634 or online at rexanderson@hotmail. com

Sounds like a good way to get smarter LEARNING a second language can enhance your brain power - and even keep dementia at bay.
Researchers at the University of Edinburgh, who studied 262 people either aged 11 or in their seventies, found that reading, verbal fluency and intelligence were improved. And a previous study suggested that being bilingual could delay the onset of dementia by several years. The big question in this study was whether learning a new language improved cognitive functions, or whether individuals with better cognitive (mental perception) abilities were more likely to become bilingual. Dr Thomas Bak, from the Centre for Cogni-
tive Ageing and Cognitive Epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh, believes he has found the answer. “Millions of people around the world acquire their second language later in life,” he said. Our study shows that bilingualism, even
when acquired in adulthood, may benefit the ageing brain. Using data from intelligence tests on 262 Edinburgh-born individuals at the age of 11, the study looked at how their cognitive abilities had changed when they were tested again
in their seventies. The research was conducted between 2008 and 2010 and all participants said they were able to communicate in at least one language other than English. Of that group, 195 learned the second language before the age
of 18, and 65 learned it when older. The findings indicate that those who spoke two or more languages had significantly better cognitive abilities compared with what would have been expected from their baseline test. The strongest effects were seen in general intelligence and reading. The effects were present in those who learned their second language early, as well as later in life. Dr Bak said the pattern they found was “meaningful” and the improvements in attention, focus and fluency could not be explained by original intelligence. “These findings are of considerable practical relevance” he added. “Millions of people around the world acquire their second language later in life. Our
study shows that bilingualism, even when acquired in adulthood, may benefit the ageing brain.” But he admitted that the study also raised many questions, such as whether learning more than one language could also have the same positive effect on cognitive ageing, and whether actively speaking a second language is better than just knowing how to speak it. Dr. Alvaro Pascual-Leone, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, US, said: “The epidemiological study provides an important first step in understanding the impact of learning a second language and the ageing brain. “This research paves the way for future causal studies of bilingualism and cognitive decline prevention.”
Hackers making fortunes MILLIONS of daily users, who rely on their computers, could fall victims from malware, which allows hackers to steal financial data.
British investigators have been working with the FBI to trace the hackers behind on-going attacks, and the “botnet” system used by the targets has been temporarily disrupted. But according to the UK’s National Crime Agency, people have less than a fortnight before the system will be operating again. It urges users to protect their machines from an expected “powerful computer attack”. American officials have pointed the finger at a Russian hacker for masterminding the scam - while prosecutors say those involved
have already raked in more than £60m. The NCA is pleading with users to backup important files and make sure their security software and operating systems are up to date. Two items of malware software, known as GOZeuS and CryptoLocker, have sparked the alert. Typically, they infect a computer via attachments or links in emails. If a user clicks on GOZeuS, it monitors activity silently and tries to capture bank details especially. The NCA warned: “The links or attachments may look like they have been sent by genuine contacts and may purport to carry invoices, voice-mail messages, or any file made to look innocuous. “These emails are generated by other computers of other victims and are used to send mass emails, creating more victims.” The Cryptolocker mal-
ware is activated if the first attack is not profitable enough. It locks a user from the files and threatens to delete them unless a “ransom” of several hundred pounds is paid. Some 234,000 machines were hit by Cryptolocker, bringing in payments of an incredible £16m in its first two months alone.
Computers running Windows 7 software are said to be most vulnerable. More than 15,500 computers in the UK are infected and, warns the NCA: “Many more are at risk.” Stewart Garrick, a senior NCA investigator, told Sky News the threat was mainly against individuals or businesses running Win-
dows-based computers. Russian Evgeniy Bogachev, 30, is said to be leading the gang behind the attacks, FBI executive assistant director Robert Anderson told a news conference in Washington DC. “The FBI) have disrupted the network and taken control of it,” said Sky’s Tom Cheshire. “So when the hackers try to
speak to the computer that’s affected, that line of communication has been cut off. “You now have a chance to clean up. The first thing you should do is update your operating system - especially if you’re on Windows, then look to scan your computer for viruses and it should be able to find it.”

Farewell Tina ITV1, 20.00 This documentary tells the story of Michelle Keegan, the Salford-born girl who rose to stardom playing the feisty, funny and fallible Tina McIntyre, as she says goodbye to Coronation Street after six eventful years. With contributions from fellow cast members including Jack P Shepherd and Helen Worth, the programme reveals the off-screen stories behind the dramatic on-screen plotlines. There’s also chance to see home video footage of Michelle growing up, along with a never before broadcast performance of her playing Sporty Spice in a school production. For the first time ever Michelle watches her original Coronation Street audition tape from 2007, where she acted alongside Jack P Shepherd who plays David Platt. Michelle’s Mum and Dad reveal that she was a plain but rebellious teenager, very similar to the character of Tina McIntyre that she would go on to play. They also reveal how the emotional plot of Tina’s father dying on screen affected them as a family – and Michelle’s home life. The programme also has unprecedented access behind the scenes alongside Michelle as she films her final dramatic scenes – all watched by Michelle’s fiancé, TV star Mark Wright. Features contributions from cast members Jack P. Shepherd, Chris Gascoyne, Beverley Callard, Helen Worth, Ryan Thomas, and Paula Lane.

W C ch o i ce The Summer Exhibition: BBC Arts At The Royal Academy BBC 2, 19.00
What makes the Royal Academy’s annual Summer Exhibition an enduring fascination? The combination of ordinary Brits showing alongside the art world’s most celebrated scions; the chance for emerging and established names to make a big splash; and the opportunity to see and be seen at one of the social calendar’s most spectacular shindigs. BBC Arts At The Royal Academy sees Kirsty Wark, Alastair Sooke and Morgan Quaintance present from the very glamorous private view, going behind the scenes of the Academy in the run up to the opening. They visit the artists’ studios and meet the amateur artists, delving into the fascinating process of curating and hanging the world’s largest open submission exhibition. The RA is one of the only institutions run by artists, and an unprecedented 12 new Royal Academicians have been elected into the RA by their peers over the last year, including Thomas Heatherwick, Bob and Roberta Smith, Conrad Shawcross, Wolfgang Tilmans and Yinka Shonibare.

BBC1, 21.00 As his family life unravels Quirke fights a losing battle with grief and drink, while Phoebe forges a new life for herself with the help of a group of oddly assorted friends. Phoebe’s new circle is Isabel Galloway, the shining light of the Gate Theatre; reporter Jimmy Minor whose crush on Phoebe goes entirely unnoticed by her; junior doctors April Latimer and the exotic Patrick Ojukwu, a Nigerian prince who has discovered that 50s Ireland is an uncomfortable place to be a stranger. Phoebe is worried that April hasn’t been heard from in over a week. The rest of the gang is not much surprised, sure that she has gone to London to get “the usual trouble” fixed, but Phoebe is not convinced. Lonely herself, and desperate for deeper connections in her life, she turns to Quirke for help, and Quirke, eager to reconnect with his daughter and to keep his own demons at bay, is quick to give it. With the help of Inspector Hackett of the Gardai, Quirke discovers some alarming evidence in April’s flat, yet when this news is reported to April’s well-connected family, the response is not what he expects. As the Latimers close ranks, Quirke finds himself alone in pursuit of the missing girl and involved in a world where race and class determine who the spotlight shines on, and who is left alone.

Born in the Wild Channel 4, 20:00 In this new series, veterinary surgeon Mark Evans and comparative anatomist Joy Reidenberg explore the wonderful and occasionally weird ways that animals make babies. Each episode explores how a different species - elephants, dolphins, kangaroos and orang-utans - reproduces in a uniquely challenging environment, revealing how they find, fight for and woo a mate; and how they have sex, give birth and raise their young in hostile habitats.
Made in Chelsea E4, 13:00

David Beckham Into The Unknown BBC 1, 20.30 A documentary special following global superstar David Beckham on an unforgettable journey through the Amazon rainforest. After 22 years playing for the world’s greatest football teams, David Beckham has retired. For the first time in his adult life he has the freedom to do whatever he wants – and to mark the occasion he’s going on an adventure. He’s chosen Brazil, on motorbikes, and is travelling with three of his closest friends - Anthony Mandler, world renowned photographer and video director; Derek White, an experienced motorbike rider who’ll get them out of a mechanical fix; and Dave Gardner, his best friend since they were 14 years old. First stop is Rio. It takes only minutes for David to be spotted by fans and paparazzi. With the motorbikes giving them a speedy getaway and the helmet creating the anonymity David craves, they escape up to a favela, called Vidigal. Passing a foot-volleyball game down on Sao Conrado beach, David can’t resist the temptation, and plays with the locals until the sun goes down. The locals can’t believe their luck. The next day they fly to Manaus, tropical gateway to the Amazon, and make their way deep into the Amazon where David is unknown. They enjoy the freedom of the bikes on the open road but are out of their comfort zone and when night falls they have to bed down in hammocks, in pretty basic conditions. After almost 800 miles of boat and bike travel, they reach a tiny airstrip that will take them deep into the jungle to meet the inhabitants of a remote territory where few Westerners have been.

Welcome To Rio BBC2, 21.00
June
This three-part series for BBC Two explores life inside Rio’s famous shanty-towns. With extraordinary access, this series explores the lives of its residents, revealing the favelas to be places of energy, resourcefulness and humour. The final episode celebrates the resourcefulness of some of Rio’s poorest residents. Living on their wits, favela residents are adept at exploiting whatever opportunities come their way. Rosie and her husband Marcos used to work on Rio’s landfill, but when they heard it was going to close they decided to start their own business, a recycling centre in their own backyard. With seven kids to feed they make good use of the items that they find, the things the everyday folk of Rio leave behind. Down on the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, favela entrepreneur Assis has a new business plan; while Jorge the sea scavenger rakes the sand beneath the waves looking for treasures left behind by the tourists and rich local residents. Thamy Delicia is a rising star in the favela funk scene, but her explicit lyrics and provocative dancing mean she needs to clean up her act if she is going to make it big outside of the favela and win the respect of her evangelical mother.

Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares USA Channel 4, 22:00
Gordon Ramsay continues his travels across the United States in a bid to save failing restaurants from disaster. In this programme, Gordon heads to country music’s spiritual home, Nashville, Tennessee, but his visit begins on a sour note at Chappy’s Cajun restaurant. Chef John ‘Chappy’ Chapman’s careless methods have hurt his local reputation. Chappy blames the Nashville clientele rather than his less-than-appetising food and disturbing kitchen practices. Despite Gordon’s attempts to show him the way, Chappy seems to prefer his own destructive route.
The Complainers, Channel 4, 21:00
Last year 38 million complaints were lodged against corporations in the UK, and as expectations of exceptional customer service rise, companies are fighting back with new ways of dealing with us. This series tells the stories of the back-and-forth between some of the nation’s most persistent and stubborn complainers, and the vast businesses and councils who deal with them.

Commando: Return to the Front Line ITV1, 22.35 This new ITV documentary features former Royal Marine officer Bertie Kerr and his emotional return to Afghanistan, eight years after he was first plunged into the planet’s most dangerous war just three weeks after passing out as a young officer. Bertie had been filmed throughout his training by film-maker Chris Terrill who then followed him to the front line in 2006 where they both came under fire together for the first time. Now Chris follows Bertie back to the killing fields of Afghanistan to revisit their past and to assess the country’s future after 13 years of war. Chris’s landmark series Commando: On The Front Line, which aired in 2007, told the story of young Royal Marines going through 32 weeks of the longest and hardest military training in the world before being immediately deployed to Helmand Province and the escalating fight against the Taliban insurgents. Most of the recruits failed to get through the brutal training but Bertie was one who succeeded - along with Chris, who at the age of 55 earned an honorary Green Beret for passing the gruelling commando tests alongside the young troops. This gave the film-maker the training, fitness and credibility he needed to be allowed to follow the commandos in to the teeth of battle on the front line. Three weeks after Bertie finished training Chris filmed him leading his men on a dangerous dawn assault on a Taliban stronghold when both came under enemy fire for the first time. Eight years on and now a banker in the City Bertie and Chris, now close friends, return to war-ravaged Afghanistan as British troops prepare to withdraw. They want to find out for themselves what effect the war has had on the Afghan people. Bertie, who lost several of his men in the conflict and saw many more seriously injured, shares personal and private entries from his diary at the time and, reflecting on the past, considers whether it was a war worth fighting. Having left the Corps in 2012, Bertie reveals what he still misses about the Marines: “The camaraderie. That shared culture, that shared spirit. And we lived life so intensely, you know, every aspect of it. We were young, we had a lot of energy. What we were doing was very exciting, we just lived life to the full.” On the ground at Camp Bastion, he watches new Afghan recruits practising on the rifle range and handling weapons for the first time, all of which bring back his own memories of training. “Day one, week one. Just like Royal Marine recruit training, you get taught how to make your bed, and get your hair cut. But, you know, they’ll have come in from all over the country and so they’ll be Pashtun, Tajiks, Turkmen, Uzbeks, Hasaris, and they’ll all just be thrown in together just like you have Scousers and Mancunians and Taffs and Cornish and Scots and Geordies, and they all have to put aside their differences and just crack on.”

Celebrities compete in a contest of culinary skill. The four remaining celebrities compete for a place in the semi-finals. First they have the terrifying task of facing judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace one by one to demonstrate their ability to identify a tray of ingredients, four types of biscuit and four creams, before being asked to make a filled brandy snap from scratch in just 15 minutes. Then the celebrities are paired into teams and sent out on their first mass catering challenge. Then it’s back to MasterChef headquarters, where the four celebrities must cook a faultless twocourse meal that will not only be judged by John and Gregg but also past Celebrity MasterChef champions, author Emma Kennedy and former England rugby captain Phil Vickery, and previous finalist Andi Peters, who know exactly what standards they expect.

Just Wilde about comperes THERE have been lots of entertainment comperes over the years here, and some make an indelible mark. Some stay in their residencies for more than a decade. Others move around every few years and some return to their native shores. So this week I would
like to tip the proverbial hat to three different, superb comperes. As the resident host of a venue, it is generally your job to liaise with the management in the booking of acts, and also to keep the audience entertained using your talent. This could be delivered
Craig Shaw CRAIG is an excellent host and has been at the helm of the Pheasant Plucker for around a decade. Before that, he was only a few yards down the road doing the same job in a bar that was then called Cormacks. Over the last 10 years, Craig has become the one to watch on that strip of bars. The Pheasant Plucker has always been a busy bar, with the friendliest staff, and Craig really is the icing on the cake. He has a magical manner with the audience, and I think he even smiles when he sleeps. He can sing and deliver cheeky, spontaneous comedy while also being gracious and encouraging his audience to join in on karaoke and other audience participation games that Craig incorporates in his build-up to showtime. Craig Shaw is truly loved by the audiences, who return year in, year out, to see him.
THE last two weeks have been fabulous in Fañabe. Lots of people moving around the bars and lots of new shows as the two pubs begin their final preparations for the summer. This week I would like to feature the family Filatis (pictured right) and their 11-year-old
daughter Jessica. They have been coming into both bars for their entire holiday as Jess loves to sing on
karaoke. In fact, so did I! The reaction she got from the audience every time she sang was as if a celebrity had just performed. This prompted me to offer her a gig later in the week. I asked her to have five songs ready and I would present her on stage as if she were a
in any number of ways. Some will use a quiz at the beginning of the evening, which usually breaks the ice and opens up the dialogue between audience and host. Some prefer to start their evening with a song, while others simply talk to the audience as if
they are sitting in their lounge at home. There is no right way to do it - only the way it works. A compere’s style will define him or her as an entertainer and will also dictate what kind of venue they work in and for how long. It takes a long time to build up a good
reputation as a resident compere. Normally, after two years in one venue, the audiences start returning there because of the familiarity that has formed between them. Now, with the power of social networks, it is a lot easier to remember people’s names, even if it means a quick trip
to the loo to check your “friends list”. All these things add up to the holiday-maker feeling special and acts to enforce the compere’s sincerity. All three hosts featured here have excelled in their field, and are three of the best on the Island.
Ray Wilde
Angela Minty
RAY is another smiley compere with a huge element of fun in his compere tool box. Over the years, he has been resident host in some of the biggest bars in Tenerife. He was one of the original comperes to host at The Full Monty and pioneered the “fun pub” style of karaoke bars here. Ray would come up with witty songs, writing the lyrics to relate to the experiences of a holidaymaker. Through the early years of the last decade, Ray made it impossible for anyone to wear white socks with sandals, thus making a comedic focal point for lots of entertainers, who would go on to use the same jokes. Ray has a following of people who visit Tenerife and will actively seek out where he is working and make a point of going to that bar. He is currently resident at St Eugen’s bar in San Eugenio, where he works alongside some of the best artistes in Tenerife.
Angela had dreamt of working as an entertainer in Tenerife since she was a small child. Her family would bring her here and, with her sister Michelle, she would watch the comperes and artistes perform with excitement and stars in their eyes. Almost four years ago, Angie took up the position of resident compere at Dreamers Bar, in Los Cristianos. This was not her first time performing in Tenerife, but she saw it as her first challenging role as an entertainer. She took it on and, within a few weeks, had established herself well. Over the years she has added so many songs to her repertoire and has become the “singing compere” with an engaging personality. She is able to make her audience feel totally at ease with her confident, but natural, manner. Recently, she has decided to move from being a resident compere to someone who is available to work in different venues, and she also hopes to be able to offer a show as a vocalist. Whatever she decides to do, we wish her good luck. Watch this space to find out where the extra-strong mint will pop up next.

Final heat: Tenerife Loves Karaoke at Leonardos
Someone like Tracy! OUR final heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke was always going to be busy - and not just because it was the end of the tour. England’s World Cup football squad were playing a warmup game in advance of the 2014 tournament, so there was a readymade audience.
Also, there were plenty of eager contestants signing up for the last heat, so it really was a busy night. Because of the footie, the competition got underway a little later than usual. But the number of people at Leonardos gave the format a brilliant start, and host Jamie Droo was given a huge welcome.
The four judges were Leonardos’ manager Steve and resident DJ Paul, together with Roscoe from Oasis Fm’s Big Breakfast Show (and CanarianWeekly editor), and Emcan Media Sales Manager John Zammit. The competition was again a close call, with only decimal points separating the placings. After Round One, it was announced that two contestants would go through to the Grand Final, which meant that the top four point-scorers would through to the sing-off round – and two claiming a place in tonight’s finale at Showtime, Karting Las Americas. It was an exciting heat with a full complement of singers. The terrace was full, as was the bar, creating a brilliant atmosphere. Leonardos has a state-of-the-art sound system, so the singers had the best possible
equipment with which to demonstrate their talent to the TLK judges. The eventual winners were Tracy Murphy, a powerful singer with a huge range, who was given top marks by one judge in the category of vocal ability. Tracy took the winning trophy by wowing the judges with her version of Adele’s Someone Like You, together with runner-up Silvio, singing Lionel Richie’s Say You, Say Me. Silvio has a lovely
singing tone and it was pleasing to welcome another male finalist. There are two other guys in the final tonight (Friday), facing the challenge of 11 girls, so the male trio are up against it, that’s for sure! It’s free entry to this final showdown, with no requirement to reserve seats. Doors open at 7.30pm and the competition will get underway at 8.30pm. So make sure you get there early to claim the best seats!

By Val Sainsbury TWO international trials against advanced skin cancer have been hailed as “exciting and striking”.
Both treatments, for advanced melanoma, are designed to enable the immune system to recognise and target tumours. The findings were released at the American Society of Clinical Oncology conference in Chicago. And, unlike many “miracle” cures, they have been hailed by the NHS Foundation Trust and Caancer Research UK. The experimental drugs, pembrolizumab and nivolumab, block the biological pathway

cancers use to disguise themselves from the immune system. Advanced melanoma - skin cancer which has spread to other organs - has proved extremely hard to treat. Until a few years ago, average survival was around six months. In a trial of 411 patients evaluating pembrolizumab - 69% of them survived at least a year. The drug, once known as MK-3475, is also being tested against other tumour types which use the same mechanism to block attack from the immune system.
Dr David Chao, consultant oncologist at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, is conducting trials in both melanoma and lung cancer patients. He said: “Pembrolizumab looks like it has potential to be a paradigm shift for cancer therapy.” One of his patients, 64-year-old Warwick Steele, has been receiving infusions of pembrolizumab every three weeks since October. Before the treatment started he could barely walk. The melanoma had spread to one of his lungs and he found
it hard to breathe. “I got tired simply standing up and was literally too exhausted to shave,” he said. “Now I feel back to normal and can do gardening and go shopping.””. Scans of his lungs reveal that after just three infusions, the drug appears to have cleared the cancer from his lung completely. The other drug, nivolumab, was tested in combination with an existing licensed immunotherapy called ipilimumab. In a trial of 53 patients, the survival rate was 85% after one year, and 79% after two years.
John Wagstaff, Professor of Medical Oncology at Swansea College of Medicine, partcipating in a larger trial of these two drugs, said: “I am convinced that this is a breakthrough in treating melanoma. “The trial is still ‘blinded’, so we don’t know what treatments the patients are getting, but we have seen some spectacular responses.” Professor Peter Johnson, Cancer Research UK’s chief clinician, said: “It’s exciting to see the range of new treatments emerging for people with advanced melanoma.” But doctors still have
a cautious outlook because the results so far published are of Phase I, early-stage trials. Much larger Phase III trials are underway involving many UK hospitals. Only when they report, in about a year, can clinicians be sure of the likely benefits. Like all drugs, the experimental treatments have side-effects. Warwick Steele said he experienced “night sweats” and even had two brief black-outs when on the new drug. But he said it was well worth it - and doctors are now treating these symptoms.
Tubby mums equal ‘sumo’ babies THE number of women giving birth to so-called “sumo babies” weighing more than 12lbs is on the rise in the UK.
And experts blame obese mothers. Last year, children that heavy were born in 38 of England’s 139 NHS maternity trusts - and another five mums had babies weighing in at more than 13lbs. According to experts, the rise in big babies is down to Britain’s obesity crisis, because larger mothers often
give birth to the heaviest children. Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, said: “It’s a well-known fact that fat mothers produce fat children. “The number of women who go into pregnancy overweight and obese is rising.” NHS statistics reveal that more than 1,000 babies born in 2013 weighed more than 11lbs, compared with 2008, when that figure was 791. These so-called “sumo” infants can be more costly for the NHS to deliver, and can suffer from ailments
associated with their size. The average weight of a new-born is 7lb 4oz for a girl and 7lb 8oz for a boy. Mr Fry said: “The first ‘sumo’ babies were being reported in 1966, and the numbers have been growing steadily, but they really started to escalate in the last decade.” One danger is that big babies are at risk of shoulder dystocia, where a new-born’s shoulders are too big to fit through its mother’s pelvic bone during delivery. This can lead to babies having broken or fractured bones, and mothers can suffer trauma and tearing. Mr Fry said large babies were also at risk of becoming obese as they grow up, which can lead to problems such as diabetes “If you’re born large, there is a real chance that you are going to remain large,” he added. “You start off in that direction and you continue. There are a lot of studies which have shown that once obese, you will always be obese.
“And there are all the dangers that follow from that. We have a number of under-fives with potential heart problems because of fatness, and it triggers a number of other diseases, such as diabetes and renal failure.” Mr Fry said that women should be aware of their weight going into pregnancy, and be careful not to pile on
the pounds while they are expecting. “The real problem is if you’re not obese when you go into pregnancy, you’re just overweight, because you’re not tracked and put on observation,” he said. He added that the old saying that pregnant mothers should be “eating for two” was a “total myth”, and that
expectant women did not need to increase their calorie intake dramatically. He added: “A lot of people are worried about taking exercise as they fear it will damage the foetus. But you can exercise, as long as it’s not violent exercise, all the way through. Swimming is great as the water supports the body.”

So just get on with it!
RIHANNA’S REVEALED!
By Carl from Robot
By Ruth Benson
THE headline spells out just how I feel sometimes when I’m trying to do my work to its best.
THIS week saw the Council of Fashion Designer of America Awards in New York.
Being a stylist has two sides to it: you either do it as a job for money, or you do it because you love it. I actually love my job, and if I didn’t, I just wouldn’t do it at all! There are far simpler ways to make money than my profession but job satisfaction is what it’s all about. So what has this got to do with your hair, I hear you ask? As stylists, most of us are trained to start a consultation with you, by not only looking at your hair but at you as an individual. We look at your style of clothing as well as your make-up - and even ask what sort of job you do. How much time is spent styling your hair at home? And not only what you want from your hair today but your long-term views. All this is to give you what you’re looking for from your style and stylist. There has been many a time I’ve heard that new clients have been given what they have asked for in salons, only to leave feeling unhappy with the result. Giving a client exactly what she asks for isn’t actually the best idea. I would say 90% of clients don’t know what they want and, sometimes,
just ask for what they have seen on someone else - in a magazine or, even worse, what they have had 20 years ago. My favourite question for clients is: “When did you last get a compliment about your hair?” If you have to think for more than a second, it’s too long ago! My job is to find out what will suit you, what you can cope with, and what your hair is capable of doing. I recently coloured a new client’s hair who was once blonde but decided she wanted to be “reddy brown”. Her stylist just agreed with what she wanted without giving any thought to whether she might want to change her colour in the future. And, above all else, would brown actually suit her. In the end, she decided to return to the colour which complemented her better blonde! After three hours in my salon, she was transformed back to blonde - and looked 10 times better. But she told me
that her other stylist had given her no information about the pros or cons of having such a drastic change. It’s not just about what you want today. Your new style could affect your colour choices and condition way into the future. If you’re not getting told about what’s going on with your hair, you simply must ask. I know you shouldn’t have to, but you must! Trust me, this will save upset and problems later on. Your hair is a living thing, and we don’t have an “eraser” to remove colours, even if they are years old. They are “trapped” inside your hair until they grow out, or are cut out. So my moral is: if your stylists are going on and on about what they’re going to do, and what they are trying to achieve, it’s for good reason. So listen, and take note of what they are saying because it will have an impact on your hair for, maybe, years to come.

It is where the who’swho of fashion come together to award all those involved in the fashion industry. One winner, who received the Fashion Icon Award, was Rihanna. Previous winners have been Lady Gaga, Kate Moss, Nicole Kidman and Johnny Depp. If the aim of the evening was to make an impact, then Rihanna’s choice of outfit surely did that. The dress, which did not leave much to the imagination, has sparked controversy. The star is rumoured
to have left Instagram after the pictures were removed from her account. The dress, nude in colour, had 216,000 Swarovski crystals, which covered her modesty - as well as a thong and fur stole. This is not the first time the artist has been in trouble with Instagram because of posting inappropriate pictures. The star’s account was taken off last week, but then seemed to reappear. The issue had been down to the star, seemingly, ignoring the “no-nudity” policy. Last week’s pictures, taken for a French magazine, were seen as too exposing. Rihanna, who seems intent on changing this, has become part of a campaign to stop Instagram deleting pictures of topless ladies with the hashtag #freethenipple. Scout Willis, daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi
Moore, went to extreme lengths to support this campaign by strolling through the streets of New York topless. Some of the press say Instagram has deleted Rihanna’s account, while others report that the singer deleted the account herself after it censored one too many of her pictures. Whichever view you take, Rihanna won’t be unhappy with the publicity. And from what she’s been up to, she is anything but camera shy. Back to the awards, and Diversity Coalition founder Bethann Hardison was honoured with the CFDA’s Founders Award for her work to racially diversify Fashion Week’s runways. Tom Ford was given a Lifetime Achievement Award, and Dior’s Raf Simons won the organisation’s International Designer Award.

Chiken-licking tasty! IF you really enjoy chicken, then Adeje Chiken, deep in the heart of Buzanada, is the place to be.
It’s just a five-minute drive out of town and is in a typical Canarian village on the main road to Valle San Lorenzo on the left on the roundabout in the centre of the village. The venue has its own parking lot, and there’s
ample space. Adeje Chiken has been open for three years and is owned by Columbian Marco, who lived in England before coming here some 13 years ago. His cousin Brian is the manager-waiter, who came to live here eight years ago and lives in Buzanada. Marco also owns a sign business behind the restaurant and the Rumbodromo disco in Las Americas. He decided to open
his chicken shack in the area when he realised there was an opening for this kind of restaurant, rather than villagers having to drive all the way to Adeje. The place was full, which is normal whenever you visit, so we decided to browse the menu leisurely while tasting their homemade garlic mayonnaise & “Mojo” (Canarian sauce) with fresh bread. And yes, they were brought to the table by
Brian without having to be asked. Everything is homemade in the kitchen, and we decided to start with the chicken croquettes and the chicken wings in BBQ sauce, together with some mixed salad. Delicious!
Of the main courses, there are so many chicken dishes to choose from: Spicy, Garlic, Honey, BBQ or just a plain chicken breast. And if you don’t fancy the sauces, you can eat a half-chicken or even a FULL one!
Finally, for our main course, we chose the honey chicken, with a fantastic sauce - honey, obviously - which is an in-house secret recipe. Needless to say, it really was fantastic, and we shared a plate of home-made chips and a few Canarian potatoes, all accompanied by some house red and lots of water. Brian did his utmost to persuade us to have a sweet, but it was an impossible task for him because there was no room in our tums for another crumb. If you enjoy a night out to suit your wallet, then Buzanada’s Adeje Chiken (correct spelling, by the way) is the place to go. And, a pint of beer is just one euro, which makes the restaurant extremely popular, with locals of all nationalities propping up the bar. It opens at around midday until late, but closes on Mondays. To book a table, call 922 728 290. You will not be disappointed!

Adeje asks you to TRY ME! On Saturday June 7th the Plaza España in Adeje is the setting for the monthly gastronomic showcase as part of Adeje’s ongoing “DEGUSTA. ME” (Try Me) programme.
One Saturday every month the town is hosting the event, from 6pm, with different culinary offerings. The initiative is part of the Adeje Impulsa programme, with the collaboration of Mercadillos del Atlántico S.L, Turismo Tenerife and Saborea Tenerife. It is also a means of encouraging business and visits to the centre of Adeje town with the idea that those who are here for the gastronomy event might also visit and spend in shops in the town. “These kind of activities contribute to the overall growth of the tourism gastronomy sector which is increasingly important for the economy of a tourist destination such as Adeje, with the main income coming from the service sector” DEGUSTA.ME, is an alternative means of promoting the excellence in the restaurant sector which “has become an important financial resource and contributor to the economic growth of the
a rea , and the Adeje council are happy to support activities which help consolidate the importance of local gastronomy.” It has been developed by the Adeje department of Economic Development as part of their economic encouragement projects and has prompted improvements in the businesses sector. DEGUSTA.ME is working to enhance the restaurant offer in the borough and promote enogastronomy as a complementary offer for visitors and the resident population. In this way both tourists and residents can enjoy local cuisine and also find
o u t something about the town centre, as just beside the Plaza de España are historic build-
ings such as the Iglesia de Santa Úrsula, the Convento, the Casa Fuerte not the mention the Barranco del Infierno. In this edition of DEGUSTA.ME 30 different establishments are offering a selection of international foods from the Canarias, Germany, Asturias, Argentina, Italy and much more. There will also be an excellent selection of wines on offer and music provided by the Bilongo Son group.

By Monica Dyson IT was recently proposed in the UK by Liverpool Council that fishand-chip shops or take-aways should be banned from allowing customers to eat food without plates or cutlery.
And, thereby, trying to do away with the custom of eating food in the street: in the case of fish and chips, out of newspaper, with respect to the increasing problem of litter and also health and safety. Now, this practice has long been a British tradition and any attempt to eradicate it has been met with indignant protests, and I’m not sure how successful it will be to enforce. Personally, I hate the sight of people eating food in the street, whether it be a kebab, sandwich, or fish and chips. I can’t understand how people can be so desperate that they cannot wait until they get back home, or back to the office. I live near a secondary school and I can see the results of pupils being allowed “out” at lunch-time, something that would have been

punishable when I was at school. There is often a stream of take-away boxes and half-eaten sandwiches on the pavement. Not a pretty sight, and, in any case, extremely unhygienic. There seems to be a total lack of respect taught today, either by teachers or by parents, for the environment, or simply for what is correct or not. Throwing litter, especially when there are litter bins, seems to be something some young people do. But then, I also tar people who smoke in the street and then throw their cigarette stubs on the floor with the same brush - and they are usually old enough to know better. Eating fish and chips out of newspaper has long been part of the British seaside scenery. But recently, there have been problems in some places like Whitby in Yorkshire, with tame seagulls swooping down on unsuspecting eaters and their fish-and-chip trays, leading to calls to cull the birds! Having said all that, I would hate to think that anything could mean the end of our much loved fish-andchip shops. I just wish that people would take the food home! Fish and chips became a stock meal among the working classes in the UK as a consequence of the rapid develop-
ment of trawl fishing in the North Sea, and the ease with which emerging railways from the ports could transport fresh fish to heavilypopulated areas in the country. Britain has always produced a plentiful amount of potatoes, while the seas have been rich in cod and haddock. Deep-fried fish, introduced into Britain dur-
ing the 16th century by Jewish refugees from Portugal and Spain, is derived from pescado frito. Fish friers sold fried fish because it could be cooked before the Sabbath and then consumed as a tasty snack, with non-Jews finding that they enjoyed it accompanied by fried potatoes, later to become known as chips. fish and chips really took off as a meal - and in 1860, the first fishand-chip shop was opened in London by Joseph Malin. Fish and chips have long been an important part of England’s economic and social history. Once it became normal for women to work, having less time to prepare meals, they soon found that a fishand-chip meal was not only quick and cheap but nutritious, too. During the Second World War, ministers decided not to ration fish and chips for fear of damaging morale while the long-standing tradition of meatless Fridays by Catholics has meant that fish and chips are indelibly linked with Fridaynight supper. A recent poll of what we like most about Britain put fish and chips in first place, in front of The Queen! And there are frequent “best fish-and-chip shop” competitions around! Unfortunately there are now just 10,500 fish-and-chip shops left in Britain, fewer than a third of their 1930s’ peak. They have
taken a severe “battering” from rival takeaways, like Chinese and Indian. Those left often have wild and wonderful names. In Sheffield, we have Codrophenia and A Salt and Battered. Other imaginative ones in other cities include Frying Squad, Good Fryday and The Codfather. I am a bit of a purist where fish and chips are concerned. I like them accompanied by mushy peas, not garden peas, thank you, with bread and butter and a cup of tea. I do not want gravy, curry sauce, salad cream or pickled eggs. And I still remember how jealous we were at school as the father of one of our classmates owned a fish-and-chip shop called Queenies Fisheries on Nethershire Lane in Sheffield! But be warned, if you ask for chips when visiting America because you will get a bowl of crisps. There, chips are called fries! And in New York City, there is a fish-and-chip shop called A Salt and Battered. Those Yanks pinch all our ideas, don’t they!

Can you make ’em smile? THE first five months of 2014 have been extremely busy at the refuge, with 140 dogs rehomed.
Sixty-one now have caring owners here on the Island, and 79 have started new lives in Germany. More than 1,300 children have visited the Granadilla refuge from various schools in the surrounding areas, and all have received educational tuition in animal welfare and care. The hard work continues to try to improve the awful plight for our four-legged friends.
One lucky dog, now named Alex, has been taken in Lana Bellamy. Sadly, she lost her dear little dog Petra at the ripe old age of 16. Petra had been her soul-mate for many years, constantly at her side. Lana, devastated over the loss of her best friend, decided quickly to have another pet. A trip to the refuge soon followed and many cute little dogs juggled for her attention. But once Lana spotted Alex, it was love at first sight. After the formalities were completed, Lana and Alex started their new life together. Already, they are inseparable and both have renewed sparkles in their
eyes. As all you animal lovers will know, dogs and cats are extremely comforting, therapeutic and great companions, especially to the elderly generation. There are more than 200 dogs at the refuge, all seeking new homes, and maybe you are not able to commit to adopting
one. But we are always looking for volunteers to walk the dogs in the beautiful surrounding areas of the refuge. If you would to be involved, please contact the refuge, or visit at the appointed opening hours and make a dog or two very happy. Please call 922 778 630
for more information, or if you would like to help out in any way. Towels and blankets are always needed for the dogs and would be very much appreciated by staff and animals alike. The refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly
next to the ecological park ITER, where the windmills are. We are open to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 2-5pm and on Saturdays between 1-4pm. We are closed on Wednesdays, Sundays and on public holidays.

You little beauty!
By Jav THE new fivedoor Mini hatchback will almost certainly give the brand the biggest sales boost of any single model so far when it goes on sale in October.
BMW insiders believe it could even outsell today’s three-door model by 300%, leading to annual sales of up to 150,000. It will be offered initially with a three-cylinder Cooper petrol and three-cylinder Cooper D diesel engines, and in four-cylinder Cooper S petrol and Cooper SD form. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, while the six-speed Steptronic torque converter automatic transmission is optional. Despite being bigger and more spacious than the new Mini threedoor hatch, BMW UK is expecting to charge a premium of around £600 for the five-door, which should price the entrylevel 101bhp three-cylinder turbo-charged
Cooper petrol model at around £14,350. That model offers a tempting mix of relative pace (0-62mph in 8.2secs) and a promised 60mpg on the combined cycle. The six-speed automatic version is marginally quicker off the mark, and offers an impressive 58mpg combined. The 189bhp Cooper S hits 62mph in 6.9sec (6.8sec for the auto) and returns 47.8mpg, or 52mpg in automatic form. The five-door version measures a compact four metres from nose to tail, which is 72mm
longer in the wheelbase than the threedoor and 161mm longer overall. The new car also offers 15mm more headroom and a useful 61mm of extra interior width “at shoulder height”. Boot space is now fully competitive with rivals at 278 litres - up 67 litres on the threedoor. This just pips the 270-litre boot capacity of the Audi A1, which BMW sees as one of the five-door Mini’s key rivals. With the 60/40 spilt rear seats both folded, the Mini’s maximum load capacity is 941 li-
tres, again ahead of the A1’s 920 litres. BMW’s engineers have gone beyond simply increasing the basic load capacity of the Mini five-door by adding a number of neat features to improve the car’s utility. There’s the option of a folding false boot floor, which can be fitted at two different heights, the upper allowing a completely flat load bay when the seats are folded forward. Unusual extendable clamps have also been fitted to the rear seat backs, allowing them to be locked in an upright
position to increase the load space further. This new Mini’s looks appear better balanced than those of the threedoor. The longer, higher nose of the Mk3 hatch is now offset by the car’s extra length. And the five-door is also marked out by a distinctive shoulder on its rear, rather than having the three-door’s near-upright tailgate. The new dashboard intrudes on the driver’s sense of space a little, and the seating position remains unusually low. But there’s plenty of shoulder-room for two adults.
Mini sources believe that the new five-door model will attract more male buyers and help to “de-feminise the brand”, and also balance the split between male and female customers. The five-door will be available in three solid and nine metallic colours, and a black or white roof and door mirror caps are no-cost options. Insiders suggest that female car buyers will buy a model seen as a “male car”, but men will not buy what’s perceived as “female”. This could also explain why the third model to appear in the Mk3 Mini range will be the longer and wider Clubman sports estate, rather than the popular convertible. BMW are also offering the option of a mobile phone SIM card, which can be embedded in the dash. This can be used with an emergency system to contact a central call centre in the event of a collision, transferring information such as the car’s location, the number of vehicle occupants and which airbags may have been triggered. I don’t suppose this will attract buyers, but what will is this fantastic little car itself!
Bentley gets Royal seal of approval The Duke of York this week met with some of the Bentley experts and trainees responsible for making the world’s most desirable luxury cars.
The Duke of York was visiting the Volkswagen AG headquarters, near Hanover, as part of the celebrations for the 300th Anniversary of the Hanoverian Monarchy. Bentley has been a part of the Volkswagen Group since 1998. His Royal Highness, who is the founder of the Duke of York awards for Technical Education, heard how vocational train-
ing is undertaken in Germany and how the dual education model has been linked to long term business success. Bentley has created a new manufacturing apprenticeship that builds on the success of dual education and includes a tailored method to vocational training based on competence profiles and dedicated placements within chosen professional areas such as Bentley specialism’s in wood and leather. This tailored approach will help ensure Bentley has a pipeline of trained young people needed to sustain the unique skills and quality levels required in the luxury car sector. Bentley is seeking to recruit more than 50 appren-
tices; the biggest single apprentice intake in more than a decade. Speaking about the visit, Mr Dürheimer
Bentley Chairman and CEO, said: “Bentley is synonymous with luxury and performance and this is only
possible by having the most skilled and motivated workforce. Training and continuous improvement are therefore key to our sustained success. We are honoured His Royal Highness witnessed the skills and met some of the individuals behind our exclusive automobiles, which have made Bentley the most sought after luxury car brand in the world.” Bentley Motors has close links to The Queen and other Members of The Royal Family, and as Warrant Holders to HM The Queen is proud to have supplied the Bentley State Limousine, the official transport of The Sovereign, on the occasion of The Queen’s Golden Jubilee.
Bentley Motors is the most sought after luxury car brand in the world. In 2013 one in every four luxury cars delivered to customers worldwide was a Bentley. 2013 was Bentley’s record year in the company’s 95-year history. Global customer deliveries grew by 19% over 2012 to 10,120 cars. The Americas remained Bentley’s largest sales region, with 3,140 cars delivered. China continued its position as the second biggest market with 2,191 cars, while in Europe, deliveries reached 1,480 cars. Sales in Bentley’s home market, the UK, were 1,381 and in the Middle East, Bentley delivered 1,185 cars. By the end of 2013 Bentley had nearly 200 dealerships in 54 countries.

Cape of good hope! THE Cape Honeysuckle, like everything we tell you about the flowers and plants here in Tenerife, flourishes in our climate.
Its trumpet-shaped flowers come in a blaz-
ing orange colour, which is sure to brighten up your garden or patio. This plant is classified in Latin as Tecomaria capensis and belongs to the Bignoniaceae family. The Cape Honeysuckle originated because the native region for this shrub is in South Africa, by the Cape of Good Hope. And the
chances of you sailing around this frightening region are pretty slender! The shape of the Cape depends entirely on how you let it grow, because it can be a shrub or vine. As a shrub, it will grow up to 10ft tall, depending on how often you prune it. But in vine form, it will spread its wings
much further, reaching lengths of 25-30ft or more. It is the most fantastic of plants, loves the sunshine and is perfectly comfortable in the shade. So it is the perfect plant for our Island and will pro-
vide you with a riot of colour. This plant will grow in just about any soil, is pretty draughtresistant and can also be grown as a hedge. It develops really quickly, so regular pruning is a must. And keep a close
watch on it because it produces suckers, so clip them off if you don’t want them to spread. As a vine, it will need much less maintenance, and you will know when to give it the occasional haircut
This Golden Trumpet is a real blast
THE Golden Trumpet produces clusters of the most beautiful yellow flowers, with white throat markings. It really is a fabulous plant, and you’ll know it as soon as you see it because it creates such a big impression, with its shiny, dark-green leaves contrasting starkly. It loves the sun and flourishes over here, which is not surprising because it is a native of Brazil. The Golden Trumpet, or common Allamanda Cathartica (in honour of 18th century Swiss botanist Frederich Allamand), is a tropical plant, grown primarily as a climbing vine and reaching fabulous heights of 20 feet or more in next to no time.. But you can also prune it down as a shrub. or even build a hedge with a few plants because it spreads so easily and rapidly.

Fans getting six of it!
By Roscoe
CD Tenerife 0 Real Murcia1
I’VE never know a run like it, and it could be a world record. Last Saturday, Tenerife lost 1-0 for the sixth straight match to a goal after just 25 seconds.
I have contacted the Guinness Book Of World Records to see if Tenerife’s run is a new mark. It’s certainly hard to believe! In truth. the match never played like a 1-0 as both sides had chances to add to the scoring. Kike’s very, very early effort would, ultimately, separate the sides, and leave Tenerife fans wondering what might have been. It’s hard to believe that seven weeks ago, Tenerife were fourth after a thrilling 3-2 win at home against Numancia. All eyes were on the runin and a possible tilt at the top two. Yet here we are and Tenerife will be lucky to finish in the top half. That’s the way this crazy division has gone, Position
and this weekend will see more fun and games. The final round of matches sees six sides chasing play-off places, eight teams hoping to avoid the drop - and the league champions will also be decided. Every match, apart from Zaragoza’s trip to Alcorcon, has something riding on it. Remember four teams go down. Barcelona B do not count for the play-offs so, as it stands, Real Murcia, Sporting Gijon, Las Palmas and Cordoba face post-season action. But they all have tricky matches. Real Murcia host Real Madrid Castilla, with the visitors still in deep trouble. They have been up and down all season, and they are one place and point ahead of the
relegation zone. Most of the teams in the league will be hoping they survive as they always put a few on the gate! They are all young kids who have got better as the season has developed. Murcia deserve a playoff place, but Castilla will push them all the way. Las Palmas host Ponferradina in a match that looked tougher a few weeks ago. Ponfer have dragged themselves out of the drop zone, and it would take a pretty rough run of results to push them back in should they lose. And their away form is top drawer after recent wins at Jaen and a thumping 3-0 victory at Deportivo. Las Palmas have lost

their last three after winning the previous three. They were awful in Mallorca last week and have now shipped 12 goals in six matches. It could be nervy in Gran Canaria. Former Chelsea, Barca and Tenerife star Albert Ferrer has pulled up trees since taking over at Cordoba. He has been strongly linked with the Real Betis job and it’s easy to see why. He has taken them from mid-table with a brilliant run into the play-offs. They have lost only once since the end of March and are flying. They will be confident of finishing the job off against Mallorca, who are in danger of doing a Tenerife and going double- bubble from La Liga to level three. Like most sides at the bottom, they have improved over the last month, going four unbeaten, and they have the big-game experience. Sporting Gijon, of course, host CD Tenerife and even the most one-eyed fan would be surprised if Tenerife came back with any points. Again, Sporting
are in good form, only one defeat in seven, and in some ways they remind me of QPR. Massive club at the level, should have walked the league, but happy to go up via the back door. If any play-off clubs slip up, there are a couple of sharks ready to pounce. Recreativo have been up the top all season, but now need a favour. They are only outside the play-offs by the head-to-head records, and they host fellow late-chargers Sabadell. For both teams, it’s win or bust - and there will be goals. I can see Recreativo winning and piling all the pressure on, and I’m certain someone will slip up. Fingers crossed it’s Las Palmas! At the bottom, Hercules have gone. With the squad they have, they should be pushing for the top six, yet they will be down in the semi-pros next season. And some big fish will follow them. Two of the sides in the dreaded drop-zone clash as Jaen host Alaves. This is bad news for Girona and Castilla

as they both can’t lose! Alaves have been a spurt side, going on runs of defeats and victories. They were superb last year and looked to have the tools to stay up after promotion, but their defence has been a joke. They have actually scored more goals than any side outside the play-offs! Stunning. But again, it’s win or bust for a Jaen side who may just have one more performance in them. They are one of the smallest clubs in the league and are a hotchpotch of cast-offs, grizzled veterans and local youth. Recently, they have turned over Sporting, Tenerife and Recreativo at home - and the noisy supporters may just inspire them to safety again. And what of Girona, play-off finalists last season and 90 mins away from relegation 12 months on? They are another team to find their form late on, just one loss in six. They have a fine attack and, in a funny way, may have got lucky this weekend. They host already-promoted Deportivo, who could win the title. But these things are not so important in Spain, and even if Deportivo go for the win, Girona love a counter-attack. Which leaves the final struggler, Mirandes. They have not been in the bottom four all season, but they are fading fast. One win in eight has pushed them into trouble and they travel to a Lugo side who have a farewell match for manager Quique Seiten. He is off to pastures new after five brilliant seasons, with Real Betis and Las Palmas both interested. Does he have one more win in him? One that sends Mirandes down? Finally, CD Tenerife have confirmed a few more players are leaving. Edgar’s departure was not a shock, but a few eyebrows were lifted with the news that Inigo Ros is being released. He was brilliant last campaign, and a preseason injury set him back this year. He was still an asset and we all wish him well.

Bang on Target! WITH Bar 180 A putting their feet up this week, there was a chance for the Premier League to see a new leader.
And Target Army grabbed that opportunity to breeze past Target Titans with a comfortable 6-2 victory. La Caña Pirates
whipped new boys Inkspots 8-0, while a 180 from Mitch helped Phoenix Bar beat Bar 180 D. Gaffers B took the last rubber to squeeze past Bar 180 B, and Rood suffered their third straight defeat at the hands of Vikings Ensecan. The Division One table doesn’t tell the full story at the moment.
That is because of a problem with the Trap Door venue. The issue will be sorted out soon. However, for what its worth, newly-promoted Emerald Shamrocks have the lead, although that may well change this week as they will also be putting their feet up. Gaffers A were too strong for the Bytes, taking six points from
them, while Emerald Lounge beat the Playboys via a last-gasp trebles leg. Naughty Nautas and Chipeque enjoyed a fun night down in Guaza, which ended in victory for the visitors. The match included a first maximum for delighted Chipeque player Neil. Picasso’s and La Caña Lancers battled to a 4-4 draw, and Pas O Nadas
put in a fine effort to beat Sundowners 6-2. As mentioned here last week, Chipeque Chippers look to be the team to beat in Division 2, and they proved that with a 7-1 drubbing of The Rebels, and a maximum from Paddy. Marilyns’ trebles leg win gave them a five-point haul at The Palms, and The Bar suffered their first de-
feat of the season at Barracuda Hunters. Phoenix Flights and the Spear Chuckers enjoyed their first wins of the campaign, while Ourplace Playgirls earned plenty of respect from visiting Waterfall Warriors for the fine spirit in which they play their darts. However, that didn’t stop them from dishing out a 6-2 thumping!

Qatar in World Cup ‘corruption’ scandal FIFA’s probe into Qatar’s successful but tainted bid to host the 2022 World Cup will be completed by Monday.
Organisers were set to meet Fifa’s Michael Garcia, Chief Ethics Investigator, amid calls for the country to lose the tournament if corruption allegations are proven. The Sunday Times published fresh claims about payments (bungs) being made to African federations to win support for the campaign. The internal inquiry
by Fifa, world football’s governing body - which is also looking at Russia’s winning 2018 bid - will report its findings six weeks later - after the forthcoming Brazil World Cup.
The newspaper says it has seen “millions of documents” which show Qatar’s victory was helped by a covert campaign by Qatari’s Mohamed Bin Hammam, a former Fifa vice-president.
The respected newspaper alleged that Mr Bin Hammam used secret funds to make “dozens” of payments totalling nearly £3m to back Qatar. He was also said to have paid nearly £1m into bank accounts controlled by Jack Warner, the former Fifa vice-president. Many eyebrows were raised when Qatar won the bid, especially because it is so hot there, but its World Cup committee denies any wrongdoing and will “take any steps necessary” to defend itself.. Issa Hayatou, Fifa Vice-
President and African football head, has denied allegations that he received free private medical treatment and other favours for backing the Qatar bid. British Prime Minister David Cameron said: “There is an inquiry under way, quite rightly, into what happened in terms of the World Cup bid for 2022. I think we should let it take place rather than prejudge it.” The Qatar 2022 bid committee insists in a statement that Mr Bin Hammam played no role in its bid, and that members were “co-operating fully with Mr Garcia’s on-
going investigation”. In addition to all the speculation, the Football Federation Australia (FFA), which also bid for the event, has revealed that it has also been investigating claims of corruption in the Qatari bid. David Gallop, FFA Chief Executive, told a radio station in Melbourne that the association had been “heavily involved” in interviews and the production of documents. Australia was one of five countries bidding to host the 2022 World Cup, along with Qatar, South Korea, the US and Japan.

Terrace and Hammers C have real relegation fears WITH just two weeks left to go in the Direct Telecom Pool League, attentions turn to the relegation battle at the bottom of Division 1.
Bottom team Toscales A travelled to fellow-strugglers Treehouse A, knowing that anything else but a win would see them relegated. Unfortunately, Greg and the boys proved to be too strong on the night and the Treehouse picked up three important points. So Toscales are down, and it is now a four-way fight to see who joins them. Terrace Bar A are occupying the second relegation spot after defeat on Tuesday night against Phoenix Knights, whose easy win secured them third place and made life difficult for Terrace, whose Mal again picked up the wooden
spoon as the Wally of the week. The Terrace team now play Toscales A, and anything but a win will surely see them doomed. Hammers C are also sweating on their topflight status. They could never get into their stride at home to Inn The Pink A and still face two tough matches. Pink are actually getting a nose bleed as they move up to fifth spot, with a chance of grabbing fourth. The Peacocks are at the wrong end of the table, but they have a few irons in the fire. And they showed a real fight for the task as they upped their game against championselect Tenerife Hammers A. They dug deep and produced what was, arguably, their performance of the season to earn themselves a creditable draw and an important point. The draw also denied the Hammers the title – well, for a week

The battle to stay up will go right to the wire as Treehouse A and Peacocks play each other twice, which are games in hand over the Terrace Bar A and Hammers C while Terrace Bar A have a game in hand over Hammers C. So watch this space! The remaining two
games of the night featured teams in the fight for fourth place. Dreamers A currently hold the position and could have more or less secured it with a win against Palms A. They got their noses in front early on and, at 3-0, were smiling. But the Palms A showed some old-fashioned fight to roar back. With Blues Brother Mark in top form, they got home with a little bit to spare after Gavin lost a few frames! Because of this, Phoenix Potters still remain three points behind them with a game in hand. They hosted Gaffers A, who were too hot for them and emerged with a straight-forward victory. Will Dreamers be caught and passed by the Potters, or will Inn the Pink sneak past them both? Exiles B and Bluebell B are also looking at top-five finishes, but who will finish higher? Exiles B took on inform Kandi 13, who have been playing well. But their run came to an end, courtesy of an 11-1 spanking. It was quite a fall from grace for the boys, who were Kandi Krushed! Bluebell B couldn’t match the Exiles effort and could only take a point off Toscales B. Terrace Bar B are another form team, but Gaffers C dug deep and left Amarilla Golf with a good point. Bluebell A had a decent first half of the season and were in and around the top five. But
over the last few weeks they have been struggling, and this week saw another loss after Treehouse B put in a great performance away from home. Down in the bottom half of the table, one or two teams are starting to put together some good results. This week, Next Door had a fine win against Shorty’s, and Picasso’s A took the points against Dreamers B. And after an impressive performance, Tenerife Pool Tables took three points off 2JZ’s. The champions of Division Two could, realistically, be decided this week as the top two lock horns. It’s been a long time coming, but Palms B and Inn The Pink B will finally cross cues on Tuesday night.
