Spain’s new King calls for solidarity
KING Felipe VI called for “A new Spain” as he was officially sworn in yesterday (Thursday) at the Spanish Parliament.
In a low-key ceremony, King Felipe received the royal sash from his father, Juan Carlos, at the Zarzuela Palace, hours after the former King formally abdicated. It was the first royal transition since democracy was restored 1975. On Wednesday, Juan Carlos I’s last act as head of state was to sign the abdication law which allowed him to pass the crown to his son, the Prince of Asturias. The ceremony, short and solemn, took place in the Hall of Columns of the Royal Palace in Madrid, and was witnessed by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. The Hall of Columns is the same room in which the chapel for General Franco was installed, and where the Act of Accession for Spain to join the European Union was signed in 1985.
It was also the setting for 1991 peace talks between Israel and Palestine. Many members of the Royal Family attended the ceremony, including the future Queen Letizia, along with her daughters. Queen Sofia also attended, along with Princess Elena. Spanish Governments, past and present, were well-represented. Former PMs Felipe González, José María Aznar and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero were in attendance, along with the “state elders” of the 1978 constitution - Miguel Herrero, Rodríguez de Miñón, José Pedro Pérez-Llorca and Miquel Roca. During the 20-minute ceremony, Juan Carlos and Mariano Rajoy exchanged a few words during the signing of the passage of the law, and there seemed to be genuine fondness between the two men. Afterwards, the King returned to take his seat, at which the Queen kissed him and hugged their son, the new king. The historic ceremony
finished with the National Anthem, and the King then received more than a minute’s applause from the attendees, who had joined The Royal family. Juan Carlos smiled throughout the ceremony that concluded his 39 years as King of Spain. The following morning (yesterday), the new 46-year-old King went to the House of Representatives for the proclamation ceremony, in front of a formal sitting of Parliament. The cheering crowds
clapped the royal procession, and the route was full of national flags and a sea of red shirts. After being sworn in, the speaker of the lower house of parliament, Jesus Posada, proclaimed him King, declaring: “Long live Spain! Long live the king!” Moments later Felipe addressed parliament, saying: “I have a great hope for the future of Spain.” He called for unity and said: “You will find in me a loyal head of state, who is ready to listen
and understand, warn and advise, as well as to defend the public interest at all times. “This monarch wants to be close to our citizens. Now, more than ever, citizens of Spain are rightly demanding fundamental, ethical principles should govern our public life. “The King should not only be a reference but who serves all citizens of Spain.” Members of Parliament gave Felipe a standing ovation, although Spanish media
reported that Catalan leader Artur Mas, and Inigo Urkullu, President of the Basque government, did not stand or clap. The ceremony was a truly Spanish affair, with no foreign representation, and the new King gave a stirring speech, in which he stressed: “Today embodies a renewed monarchy for a new time. “I will listen. I want a Spain that will continue to build together.” He spoke of an integrated country, saying: “Spain is diverse, but must also be united. We need solidarity between people - and respect for the law and everyone’s feelings. There can be different ways to feel Spanish! “Even in the times of European integration, we should never divide or exclude anyone, and we need to understand and respect, live and share together.” He added “The King, the head of state, has to be not only a leader but also a server that is just, and understands the legitimate demands of citizens.”

Sunday Market
returns! JUST a couple of weeks after being closed down, the popular Sunday Market in Los Cristianos has reopened, and it’s better than ever!
The owners have come to an arrangement with Arona Town Hall, and all parties are satisfied that the required health and safety standards have been met. The new site runs from the roundabout (at the entrance of the closed site) up the hill past the Victoria Court apartment complex. The entrance is just up from the roundabout, so shoppers are able to arrive by taxi to the usual rank. It runs up the road between the two roundabouts (past Jardines del Sur and Victoria Court, and up to the Reveron). Stalls are on the side of the road only where traffic would come down the hill, and the other side remains open to traffic (uphill only). The temporary site is smaller than the established one, but there will still be the usual, wide variety of goods available. The market
is scheduled to open from 9am until around 3pm and, for many traders, it’s now business as usual. One trader told the Canarian Weekly: “It’s nice to be back, and I think the owners and the Arona Mayor deserve a pat on the back for getting everything back to normal so quickly. “There are fire extinguishers everywhere it seems as though they are placed every four stalls or so - and the new location certainly looks the part.”
Another said: “I think we were all worried that we would be out of business for a while. It was rumoured that we would be closed for six
months, so to be back after just a couple of weekends off is brilliant.” Last Sunday, the market was given a “soft”
reopening and, understandably, the crowds were thinner than normal. Trade was also slower, but most of the 500 individual
pitches available were filled. Traders were required to show relevant paperwork: social security confirmation and receipts, NIE or DNI and residence certificates, before being allowed to trade. There was also a good, yet unobtrusive, local police presence, and the whole day passed off without incident. One shopper told us: “I didn’t know the market had been closed! I’ve been coming here for years on holiday and I love the market. There is lots to browse, and my husband loves how cheap the watches are!” There was certainly a great buzz around the market last weekend, and many people will be delighted that it’s back!

Canaries lead way with electronic prescriptions THE Canaries’ Health Service is, in some areas, streets ahead of many other parts of Spain.
True, there are still reasons not to be entirely satisfied with it. But for over five years, patients have been able to get a single electronic prescription, valid for three months. It can be used at any chemist in the region to collect prescription medications. And since its launch, more than 200 million e-prescriptions have been issued. This has led the Ministry of Health to choose this system as a bench-
mark for testing across the country. The system is expected to become fully operational across the entire Spanish Health Service (SNS) by 1st January next year, according to Ana Mato, Director General for Public Health, Quality and Innovation. And there are already hints that it could spread right across Europe, enabling people to collect their prescribed medication from any chemist, anywhere! The project is already being linked to testing in Switzerland. First tests of inter-regional connectivity will be held from 1st August in the Canaries and Ex-
tremadura, and then the Balearics, Cantabria, Castilla-La Man-
cha, Catalonia, Andalucia. Galicia will gradually be added.
The initial tests will relate to state-funded dispensary items - excluding certain “heavy duty” drugs such as morphine and Oxycodone - and will ascertain functionality of a single crossregion e-prescription. Francisco Miranda, from the Santa Cruz College of Pharmacists, said of the model in use in the Canary Islands: “It is an example of good performance, which is why it has been chosen by the Ministry. “It is a system that will streamline and better manage pharmaceutical delivery and spending.” Miranda added that once preliminary tests between the Islands and Extremadura proved
successful, the pilot would be extended. It will offer people the option of picking up their prescription medications in a region outside the one in which they reside, and thus, “eliminating medical frontiers”. This will be of huge benefit to people with chronic illnesses, and in particular, those who have to travel for treatment outside their home region. The Ministry of Health estimates that the scheme will eventually reach over 43 million people, including 35,000 GPs, 60,000 specialists and 21,500 dispensing chemists across Spain.
Mammoth, worldwide petition could ruin Repsol oil-drill plan SOME 200,000 people have now signed an online petition to try to halt the controversial search for oil in Canary Island waters.
The petition was presented to Repsol’s
Madrid head offices on Tuesday) by representatives from Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, Ecologists in Action, SEO/Birdlife and the WWF. It contains signatures from people in 183 countries, all of whom are calling for a halt to Repsol’s search for oil off the Canaries.
They hope their action will force the prospecting to stop - avoiding what they call the “disaster” of a potential oil spill in an area less than 10 kilometres offshore. It is close to an area proposed for protection as a Site of Marine Community Interest (LIC). The petition was ac-
companied by a letter to Repsol president Antonio Brufau, calling for an “immediate” suspension of the project. Various NGOs (Non Government Organisations) were present, along with representatives of the Canaries’ government, the Fuerteventura and Lanzarote Caabildos and the Brotherhood of Fishermen of La Restinga (El Hierro). The letter includes a plea for Brufau to “observe and accept, without delay, the demands of the population of the Canary Islands, the international tourism industry, and the scientific community.” In particular, consideration was requested for the people of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, two islands which have no fresh water supply, and rely wholly on desalination for their domestic supply. In addition, the NGOs expressed their dissatisfaction with decisions the Ministry for the Environment will take, which they believe will threaten, rather than guarantee, the con-
servation of one of the world’s richest area for biodiversity. The area where drilling is planned is a
stretch of 616,000 hectares, 9.7 kilometres off Fuerteventura, and 18 kilometres off Lanzarote.
The Canaries’ poverty now almost at rock-bottom IN the six years of recession, from 2007 to 2012, the poverty index in the Canary Islands has risen by 12.4%, against the national rise of just 1.7%.
The Canaries were the second-worst hit in Spain, Extremadura topping the list with a 15.5% increase. The poverty index reflects those on low incomes, as well as the long-term unemployed. And the study by Ban-
caja and the Valencia Institute of Economic Research (IVIE) indicates that while improvements in health and education were noted, social exclusion is on the rise. The percentage of those on low incomes in the Canaries rose by 16.2%, but the most worrying statistic is the long-term unemployed, which rose by a staggering 565% in the same period. According to the study, the areas with the lowest poverty index figures are Navarra, the Basque Country and Cantabria.

La Palma sewage station causing such a big stink! THE proposed pumping station in La Palma’s capital city of Santa Cruz is not only a monstrosity, but its cost has spiralled to 950,000 euros.

Time for a laugh! I’M still laughing at Spain’s socalled effort in the World Cup. For me it’s the worst ‘world championship’ sporting defence since Tony Knowles destroyed Steve Davis in 1982.
Snooker is totally different to football, but I surely can’t have been the only one to see this coming? They say “time waits for no man”, and this is so true in sport. But come on, Spain’s so called superstars have been poor for a while. Even the captain can’t get a game with his club. Pique, Torres, Alonso, Ike, Pedro and Iniesta should never pull on the jersey again - and don’t get me started on Diego Costa. All that hassle and for what? Talking of laughs, the next Tenerife Comedy Club takes place tomorrow (Saturday), and it’s going to be a corker. It’s being hosted by Simon Feilder, who was
The work is said to be urgent - to stop sewage spilling on to the beach. The sewage pumping station, near the seafront, measures

The headliner this time is multi-awardwinning comedian Marcel Lucont, as seen on Russell Howard’s Good News. He is excellent and something a little different. It’s the first time in Tenerife for Comedy Store regular Chris Martin, who has recently been supporting Jack Whitehall, Russell Kane and Milton Jones on tour. He has also stormed Edinburgh with his show Chris Martin….No Not That One! And yes, there are gags about Coldplay! Finally, you have a real treat with the return of James Acaster. 17m x 3m, and will be built on a site formerly owned by Camesa, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of metal cables. Costs will be met by the La Palma Cabildo, as agreed with the Department for Coasts, but the initial plan was scrapped because of its 1.7m-euro cost. A second plan was then formulated, but this carried only a marginally-lower cost of 1.5m-euro. The third plan would cost 800,000
euros, but would be in plain sight of visitors to the area. After scrapping numerous possibilities, the current scheme will be presented this week for approval to the City of Santa Cruz de La Palm. But the cost is again higher than expected, because of the desire to have the station hidden from public view. The cost has risen through demands, not only to keep the
pumping station hidden, but also because of the necessity for it to withstand a battering by the sea, while ensuring no leaks will occur. Work on a nearby beach construction is now dependant upon the completion of the sewage pumping station, and Mayor Juan José Cabrera has openly expressed his fears that although urgent in nature, work will not be completed by the end of this year.
Police nab suspect gang of militants SPANISH police have held a group of eight on suspicion of recruiting militants to fight in Syria and Iraq.
Raids were carried out in Madrid in the early hours of Monday, and police suspect the gang of attempting to send people to join the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), a jihadist militant group. The group’s leader, said to be Lahcen Ikasrrien, was once held at the US detention centre at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba after being arrested in Afghanistan. But the Moroccan national was released on his return to Spain in 2005 for lack of evidence. One of the seven other people arrested is believed to be from Spain, another from Argentina and the other five from Morocco. Raids were carried out on 12 addresses, and police were also reported to be hunting the brother of one of the Madrid bombers. Attacks carried by Is-
lamist militants on four trains in March 2004 left 191 people dead and another 1,800 people hurt. Spanish police have carried out a series of raids against suspected militants in recent months. A number of people were arrested last month in Spain’s north African enclave of Melilla on suspicion of trying to recruit fighters for Islamist militant groups in Libya and Mali. Although Mon-
day’s arrests were not thought to be linked to potential domestic attacks, police are said to be stepping up security ahead of the proclamation of Prince Felipe as king later this week. But Spain is concerned about the threat of “blowback” from the conflict in Syria and the Sunni rebel offensive, led by ISIS in Iraq, which has led to the capture of a number of towns and cities. A French national was detained by German police on suspicion of
fighting for militants in Syria at the weekend. He was arrested as he arrived in Berlin on a flight from Istanbul. Belgian police investigating the murder of four people at the Jewish Museum in Brussels are seeking the extradition from France of a militant who spent a year fighting in Syria. And the Dutch government revealed on Monday that many Islamist fighters from the Netherlands had joined ISIS.

The Santa Cruz winter warmers IT was a bumper winter season for tourism in Tenerife capital Santa Cruz - but the summer months are hardly likely to be as good.
With hotel occupancy figures close to 60% for the first four months of the year, Gabriel Wolgeschaffen, vice-president of Hotel Association (Ashotel), said it had been the best winter in a decade. The latest figures from Tenerife Tour-
ism show occupancy in January at 64%, 66.4% in February, 58.5% in March and 42.4% in April. It means that in some months, an increase of between 12% and 41% was recorded. Wolgeschaffen said there had been a better pricing policy, leaving the average cost for available rooms up by just over 22%. He added that the last two months of 2013 and the first four of 2014 had been an “excellent tourist season” for the whole Island, and San-
ta Cruz in particular, as many more foreigners opted to stay in the capital. Between January and April, 26,376 foreign visitors enjoyed overnight stays in Santa Cruz - an increase of 43.1% over 2013. Most significant increases were in visitors from Scandinavia, where almost twice as many stayed this year as in 2013 (4,965, up 98.4%). Visitors from Germany also blossomed impressively, up almost 50% to 3,624.
But despite the increases in foreign visitors, the bulk of the tourists were from within Spain, accounting for 46,830 visitors, up 4.5%. This was offset by a, 8.5% decline in visitors from the Island itself. But Wolgeschaffen says it is unlikely the upward trend will continue in to the summer, and he suggests that the change in clientele is reflected by figures in recent years and coincides with the Island’s “low season”. But last year’s low
season (36% occupancy) was still a marked improvement on 2012, where just 24% occupancy was recorded. The end of the cruise season also has an effect on data. During the cruise season, many passengers opt to stay overnight before or af-
ter their cruise to experience more of the Island. Yet the overall hope is that this summer’s figures will remain stable against those of 2013. Wolgeschaffen even hopes for a “little rise,” but admits his expectations are realistic.
Visionaries
can lift Island TENERIFE Cabildo has launched a project to find 100 “visionaries” with ideas to improve the Island.
President Carlos Alonso launched the “Visionaries” initiative and spoke of the need for ideas which will revolve around independence and self-sufficiency, while keeping Tenerife “ultra-connected” on an international stage. The project will be judged after the best 100 ideas have been selected, and will be separated into a number of categories: Junior, Green, Cultural, Solidarity and Foreign. The best idea overall, rated on originality, innovation and feasibility, will be put into action. Alonso pointed out that this is not a
competition per se, but the winner will see his/her plan executed, which will be prize enough. It is hoped that big businesses will help sponsor those with big ideas, and Alonso added: “People make a difference. The project is a great opportunity for anyone who has a vision for a better Tenerife.” The top 100 ideas will form an exhibition prior to judging, and there will be a public ceremony at which the results will be announced. Do you have an idea? If so, you have until December to submit it, via the online platform http://www.visionariosdetenerife.com/ You will also be able to see and comment on projects via the YouTube page http://www. youtube.com/user/visionariostfe

Hungry schoolkids
battered! FISH and chips - and anything deep-fried or in batter - will be limited to two portions a week in UK schools.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg says the new standards are designed to make it easier for school cooks to create “imaginative, flexible and nutritious menus”. But while the standards have been welcomed by many teachers and parents, some argue that they will be ignored by thousands of schools. The standards are not compulsory for academies created between 2010 and this month. Previous standards introduced between 2006 and 2009 did much to improve school food,
says the Government, but were complicated and expensive to enforce. Cooks were forced to use a special computer programme to analyse the nutritional content of every menu. The new guidelines for cooks include the following rules: one or more portions of vegetables or salad as an accompaniment every day, at least three different fruits, and three different vegetables each week. They also limit fruitjuice portions to 150ml, and stipulate no more than two portions a week of deep-fried, batter-coated or breadcrumb-coated food. Mr Clegg said: “The revised school food standards will allow schools to be more creative in their menus.
“They are easier for schools to understand and, crucially, they will continue to restrict unhealthy foods to ensure our children eat well.” A National Union of Teachers (NUT) spokesman told Sky News: “Expecting some schools to sign up voluntarily, while others are required to abide by the standards on a compulsory basis, fundamentally undermines the principle of having universal food standards. “This will significantly weaken the message that all schools should provide a healthy and balanced diet to all children.” But the Government says it is confident schools will sign up to the new scheme, although it is their choice.
New ring-road delay is down to the Italian job THE long-awaited south section of Tenerife’s ring road has suffered yet another setback. This time, there has been a delay in the fabrication of sections of the proposed Erques viaduct. The road has suffered numerous problems, including funding issues. Now, the new opening date has been pushed into the middle of next year. Mid-sections of the viaduct are being made in Italy, and will then be transported to Tenerife for assembly.
In early May, a group of representatives from both the regional and local governments visited the works to check on progress of the project, which is being carried out by the Public Works Ministry of the Government of the Canary Islands. At the time, it was thought that the viaduct - by far the most complicated section of the road - would be in place by the end of this year. But the construction in Italy has not been completed on time.
Facilities do not exist on the Island to fabricate the viaduct’s sections, so the work had to be outsourced. Unfortunately, the delay in Italy is also partly blamed on a shortage of funding at the necessary time. Gerardo Hernández, Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, said that the viaduct, when completed, will be a “model structure, integrated into the environment, in line with the wishes of both regional and local governments”.

Fine bad parents, says the head of school watchdog MUMS and dads, who fail to support their children’s education by missing parents’ evenings or not reading with them, should be fined.
That’s the view of Sir Michael Wilshaw, head of the schools’ watchdog Ofsted, who calls them “bad parents”. And head teachers should also be able to impose financial penalties against parents who do not force their children to do their homework, says the Chief Inspector of Schools. Sir Michael told The Times that being poor was too often used as an excuse by white working-class families for failing to succeed at school. His comments were made in the context of results, which re-
veal that children with working-class British parents often do not perform as well as those from immigrant communities. They follow Education Secretary Michael Gove’s insistence that parents will face “stronger sanctions”
if they fail to ensure children turn up to school and behave properly. He said this could come in the form of deductions from benefits. The Ofsted chief said his views were formed from his time spent working as a head
teacher in London’s inner-city schools. Sir Michael says teaching should start at two, and that parents use being poor as an ‘excuse’. He told the newspaper: “I was absolutely clear with parents; if they weren’t doing a
good job, I would tell them so. It’s up to head teachers to say quite clearly, ‘You’re a poor parent’. “If parents didn’t come into school, didn’t come to parents’ evening, didn’t read with their children, didn’t ensure they did their homework, I would tell them they were bad parents.” He added: “I think head teachers should have the power to fine them. It’s sending the message that you are responsible for your children, no matter how poor you are.” Sir Michael said some schools in inner-city areas were among the best-performing. “London is showing that all children can do well, including poor children, and what we need to do is replicate what’s happening here elsewhere,” he said. “There’s too much variability and inconsistency across the country.”
He said it was important to note that the group now doing worst of all was white British children. To catch up with the world’s leading nations, he added, the gap in performance between those children with white British and those with immigrant parents needed to narrow. “Immigrant communities are doing very well, educationally, and it should be recognised that they’ve added value to this country’s performance.” Sir Michael also said he supported the reforms to exams planned by the Government, and he backed a return to the use of textbooks. He also approved of Mr Gove’s proposals for radical changes, saying they were “absolutely necessary”, and urged head teachers: “Get on with it. Stop moaning!”

What it takes to be a True Briton A NEW survey says people in Britain have tougher attitudes towards immigration and welfare.
And they insist on a higher requirement for what it takes to make a person British. The British Social Attitudes survey found 95% of people thought that to be “truly British”, you must speak English. Eleven years ago, 86% felt the same way. The survey also discovered that 77% of people say you must have lived in Britain for most of your life, while 51% claimed “True Brits” must have British ancestry. Some 74%
also said it was important to be born in Britain to be a Brit. Under that definition, though, Boris Johnson (a potential Prime Minister) Prince Philip (the Queen’s husband) and stars Joanna Lumley and Cliff Richard, would all be counted as non-Brits. The study also reveals that 61% of people believe EU immigrants should have to wait three years for access to welfare benefits. That goes completely against PM David Cameron’s attempt to be tough on immigration, by setting a threemonth limit. It will raise concerns about the possibility of UKIP continuing with the electoral success
it experienced in May when it topped the polls in the European elections. The long-running
British Social Attitudes survey also found that almost a quarter of Britons believe the main reason
Anyone would think I had defeated Hitler on my own THE war veteran who went to Normandy without telling his care home received an astonishing 2,500 cards on his 90th birthday.
Bernard Jordan hit the headlines in newspapers and TV across the globe after disappearing from The Pines, in East Sussex, so he could attend this month’s D-Day commemorations. Mr Jordan said: “I just can’t believe it.
It’s quite overwhelming, to be honest. “I want to thank every-
one who sent me a card or a gift. Sadly, I can’t thank everyone in per-
son, so I hope they get this message. “I’m just one man and I’m nothing special. There were a lot of other people on the beaches of Normandy that day, and this lovely attention is for them really, not me.” He added: “Anyone would think I had defeated Hitler on my own!”. The war veteran also welcomed news that Chancellor George Osborne would be setting aside money to enable D-Day veterans to continue their annual pilgrimage to Normandy.
immigrants come to this country is to claim benefits. And just 27% feel legal immigrants who are not British citizens should have the same rights as the rest of the country - down from 40%. Penny Young, NatCen Social Research chief executive, said: “In an increasingly diverse, multi-cultural country, we might expect people to be more relaxed about what it means to be British. Yet the trend is going in the opposite direction. “It is now harder to be considered British than in the past and one message comes through loud and clear - if you want to be British, you must speak English. “And as we debate whether UKIP’s vote will hold up in the General Election, British Social Attitudes shows that the public
is yet to be convinced that politicians have got a grip on immigration. “They want tougher rules on benefits, and many are unaware of the policies in place to control immigration.” The survey suggests that Mr Cameron’s hope to teach British values in schools might not be successful, because many people believe Britishness is something people need to be born with - and cannot go on to acquire. The Prime Minister wants to mark the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta next year with a new drive on British values in schools. It follows the Birmingham scandal, which heard allegations of a co-ordinated plot to push Islamic teaching into British state schools.

Olsen’s fleet of four cruise ships - Black Watch, Braemar, Boudicca and Balmoral - all of which are ideally-suited to the traditional British cruise guest. With everything on board priced in pounds sterling, there is a definite “home-from-home” feel throughout the fleet. All four ships offer a friendly and welcoming
“country house” atmosphere, where friendships are forged with fellow guests and crew alike. Fred. Olsen ships offer a relaxed and informal style of cruising, yet retain those aspects that make a cruise such a “special” form of holiday, such as dressing for the formal dinner evenings. Kate Wooldridge, the company’s International Sales Manager, said: “Fred. Olsen has been working with Tenerife
Sunshine for 12 months now and the partnership has been hugely successful. “I am very excited to be working with the team again on these four exclusive events, and I look forward to meeting some potential new Fred. Olsen guests!” Kate added: “Guests who attend one of these events will be able to hear all about our Tenerife sailings in a relaxing environment; plus, we have some fantastic offers available if guests
book before the 31st July.” Highlights from the cruise programme include a 14-night “Cape Verde and Canary Islands” cruise, a 14-night “Christmas in the Canaries & West Africa” cruise and a 13-night “Canaries New Year & the Caribbean” cruise, which departs from Santa Cruz, Tenerife and requires guests to fly home from Barbados in the Caribbean. Guests will have plenty of time to chat through
any of their enquiries or questions with Kate, and the team at Tenerife Sunshine. Every attendee will also be able to take away Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ new 2015 brochure, as well as further details on the Tenerife sailings. These four events are free to attend, but guests must reserve their place. Please contact Tenerife Sunshine on +34 922 751 867, ext.1, or email info@tenerifesunshine.com.
A better smile, no matter your age! ORTHODONTIC treatments are usually applied in early age, or with adolescence, but the patients are now getting older.
In fact, a recent survey has shown that 75% of adults who have undergone orthodontic procedures report positive changes in their careers and personal relationships. And an astonishing 92% would recommend adult orthodontics to their friends and family members. Dental clinic Medical Implant, based in Los Abrigos, specialises in Aesthetic Orthodontic
treatments, because staff know how essential mouth and teeth are for our well-being and selfesteem. Enhancing your smile via Aesthetic Orthodontics is possible at any age, and we at Medical Implant offer orthodontic treatments for adults, focusing on the aesthetic side of your health. Orthodontics with Aesthetic Braces, is a fixed device of so-called “brackets”, cemented on to the teeth to correct malocclusions, lining-up teeth and enhancing general dental appearances. This type of “brackets” used to be made of metal, but nowadays, the
material has been customised and is nearly invisible. Orthodontics with Self-Ligating Braces the latest type of brace device - come with a system in which the “brackets” can be fixed to a wire arch, different type of clips or even elastic or metal bands. The “brackets” are generally smaller but show faster results, and they even correct crowded teeth without the need of tooth extractions. Lingual Othodontic “Lingual Braces” - are braces, in which the “brackets” are fixed on the inside, so-called ligual side of the teeth, and are totally invisible.
For the summer holidays, Medical Implant has designed a special offer for parents and children: “Orthodontics for your children and a Free Teeth Whitening for you.” If you are considering orthodontic treatment for your children, then it’s time to contact Medical Implant so that you can wear a radiant smile this summer. The offer is valid until the end of September. Medical Implant works to design your smile with aesthetic orthodontic treatments, which go hand in hand with your individual lifestyle and your needs. Record-breaking anglers, ahead of San Miguel event The annual International DeepSea Fishing Championships, sponsored by La Gomera Cabildo and held in the island’s waters, broke records galore.
On the first day alone, eight marlin were caught - more than in any of the previous 13 years of the contest. And this year saw the involvement of three more boats in the event, organised by Marina La Gomera and supported by Santa Cruz Port Authority. Cabildo president Casimiro Curbelo Curbelo is delighted that the world’s eyes were on the Island for the two days of competition, saying: “This serves to raise awareness of the natural values of which we are so proud.” He added: “With the involvement of the council, we hope the event will become even greater over time. Adasat Reyes, La Gomera’s Director for
Sport and Youth, said the event also served to show that the waters of La Gomera were among the best in which to learn about the marlin and its habitat. Reyes also congratulated the organisers, who attracted more teams, despite a fall in
sponsorship. The competition itself is governed by the rules of the International Fishing Federation, and fish are caught, photographed and released. However, if teams wish to donate tuna to a local school or charity, then that is allowed under
the rules. Once ashore, the teams present their photographic evidence to the jury, who then validate the catch. The winning team is the one amassing the highest points total. These are accumulated by catches: a blue marlin nets 400 points, a
white marlin 50 points, and tuna in at one point per kilo. Winners receive a cash prize and an invitation to attend next year’s event, which will also be held in La Gomera. Meanwhile, Tenerife is also gearing itself up - at least the fishermen are - for Spain’s qualifying round of the Bertram World Tournament catch-and-release event next month. The three-day championship starts from San Miguel Marina on 10th July and is in its fourth year. The winners go through to next year’s World Cup final in Quepos, Costa Rica, representing Spain against dozens of teams from around the globe. Their prize in Tenerife is valued at 10,000 euros, and it will be a real feather in their caps because the number of boats competing, from all over Spain ands the Canaries, has doubled this year. Also, there will be a special 15.000-euro prize for the boat which captures four blue marlin - a feat possible thanks
to the Atlantic waters around the coast of San Miguel Marina. It is considered one of the best areas in the world for catching billfish, especially during the high season for blue marlin fishing. San Miguel has the only marina in Tenerife able to host an event of this nature, with its extensive facilities, providing coverage for a large number of boats. Also, it is placed strategically within the influence of the trade winds and close to the west of Tenerife, where the water is usually calm. It is also just 90 minutes from La Gomera and three hours from Gran Canaria, allowing plenty of open fishing opportunities for the competitors. The event is sponsored by Bertram, and organised by the Club de Pesca and Navigation, plus San Miguel Marina. It is backed by IGFA (International Federation of Sea Fishing), Tenerife Tourism and San Miguel de Abona Council, among others.
Canaries to lose 2,386 doctors to retirement in the next decade
Retirement law decimates docs Three bids for Casino TENERIFE Cabildo has received three offers relating to the sale of the Playa de Las Americas Casino. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, addressing a press conference on Tuesday, said the offers were from Automaticos Canarios, the Orenes Group and the Oasis Paraiso & Canarias Barceló Hotels. Each bidder was given 15 days to solicit information about the Casino. The initial time may be extended by a further two-week period,
and once the bidders have all the information they need, they will have to submit a formal offer within 70 calendar days. In that period, they will be required to state their share purchase price, as well as a detailed investment project. The project must be linked to the promotion of tourism, says Alonso, whether it be related to leisure or accommodation, and must also generate competitiveness and employment.
A GOVERNMENT law which forces doctors to retire at 65 means that the Canary Islands will lose nearly 2,500 GPs in the next 10 years.
The National Statistics Institute (INE) suggests there are 2,386 working medical professionals aged between 55-64 years. And this year alone, the Islands have already lost 411 doctors aged between 65-69 years because of the two-yearold law. By province, Gran Canaria’s Las Palmas will be harder hit, losing 1,286 doctors, compared with Santa Cruz’s
1,100 loss. Rodrigo Martín, Santa Cruz Medical Association President, says it will be impossible to maintain services if replacement rates are not met. He is hoping fervently that the number of newly-qualified doctors will exceed the number of retirees over the next few years to avoid a po-
tential collapse of the system. Already, there are issues in six major branches: Pediatrics, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Neurology and Radiology, where the Ministry for Health has not managed to fill vacancies left by retiring doctors for several months, if at
all. The problem seems to be worse on the smaller islands, where some departments have had no resident specialists for over a year. And this is exacerbated because many newly-qualified medical professionals are not securing employment after competing their residency. They are opting to leave and practice in other regions or countries, while those who have been forced to retire continue in private practice. The nursing sector is also witnessing a similar trend, though less pronounced. This year, 158 nurses aged 65 will be forced into retirement, followed by a further 1,300 within a decade.

C O N V E YA N C ING is a legal term. It involves the process of the paperwork necessary in buying or selling a property.
And also its transference by Public Title Deed (Escritura), which is signed before a Public Notary (notario). In my last article, I referred to many steps to be carried out in this matter. Now, I am following that column with these points. Private contracts The first step when buying a property is usually the signature of a private contract (Contrato Privado). Sometimes, the parties go direct to the Notary. However, if there is a deposit paid by the buyer, it is necessary to have a private contract. This is signed by the buyer and seller (drafted by a lawyer). Normally, both the vendor’s lawyer and the buyer’s lawyer agree the contents of the private contract before signing. It is not advisable to sign
19 CW
More on... conveyancing
standard contracts because every case is unique. An option of purchase contract (contrato de opción de compra) isn’t a binding purchase contract, but a deposit must usually be paid, which
you lose if you withdraw from the purchase. A deposit contract (Contrato de Reserva) is an agreement in which you pay a small amount as goodwill, which secures the property for a small period of time.
The final steps After all necessary checks are done, the Deed of Purchase (Completion) must be signed, and the balance of purchase price is to be paid. The mortgage debt (if any) should be
deducted from the purchase price balance. Eventually, the buyer can surrogate in the mortgage loan. Bear in mind that the bank should accept such subrogation and, consequently, the bank repre-
sentative should attend the Notary to sign the subrogation Deed. If it isn’t possible to complete the sale, you should ask your lawyer about your rights, especially to get your deposit back. In many cases, the vendor acts through his representative with a Power of Attorney (Poder Notarial). In such a case, the Notary should verify that the POA is valid and legitimated. In many cases, the POA is granted abroad, and that is why is very important to check that all the legal rules of the country where the POA has been granted are fulfilled. The foreign POA must have an official stamp, which is the Apostille of The Hague Convention (if granted before foreign notary). It is also usual to sign the POA before the Spanish Consulate abroad (who has notary functions).
Heads of Spain and Mexico in harmony over full-on trading MEXICO President Enrique Peña Nieto, met Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy this week, and helped cement relations between the two nations.
The heads of state signed a number of cooperation agreements, programmes and decrees on a wide range of issues. Rajoy was keen to sign up new economic and trade relations between two countries. Mexico is Spain’s leading customer and supplier in the region. And Spain is the leading EU investor in Mex-
ico, ranked second in the world. Rajoy recalled that Spanish companies have committed to the Mexican market in the long term, demonstrating “their excellence and leadership in key and strategic sectors, such as energy and infrastructures”. But, he said, also in more traditional sectors such as the textile industry, agriculture, gastronomy and tourism. He pointed out the growing interest shown by Mexican companies in investing in Spain. “Mexico is the sixthhighest international investor in our country and has become an excellent platform to
join some of the most promising markets in the world,” he added. The Spanish PM also said Spain and Mexico had achieved excellent co-operation in their foreign affairs actions and close agreement at multi-lateral forums. For that reason, he expressed his gratitude “for the ongoing support for Spain’s candidature to a nonpermanent place on the United Nations Security Council” for the two-year period 20152016. The PM agreed that the two countries have supported and driven the Ibero-American summits since the beginning, and are committed to the renewal
process initiated at the Cadiz Summit. “The Spanish Government will provide Mexico with all the support it needs for the Veracruz Summit to be a success for the whole Ibero-American community of nations,” he added. Spain is also closely monitoring the Pacific Alliance, of which Mexico is the founding nation, with great interest. “We were the first European country to join the Alliance as an observer country,” he said. “And we want Spain’s participation to be active in order to help lay the foundations and establish areas of common interest.”
He also stressed: “Mexico and Spain have a future ahead of them which is full of opportunities.” Rajoy told Enrique Peña Nieto that Spain is following the reforms undertaken by the Mexican Government with great interest: “We are two pro-reformist governments. “We both share the determination and vision to carry out the reforms our countries need to generate wealth and employment, and to increase the well-being of our citizens. “We are both aware that this is not easy, and that sometimes the measures are unpopular, or affect spe-
cific sectors. But despite this, we have done what we had to - and the results are starting to show.” Rajoy also highlighted an important fact, saying: “This is the last State visit for the King, who has shown on a multitude of occasions his special warmth for the whole of Ibero-America, and his enormous affection for Mexico, a country he has visited on numerous occasions.” In turn, Enrique Peña Nieto expressed the “unwavering respect” the people of Mexico have always shown for King Juan Carlos, and conveyed their wishes to Felipe VI for “every success”.

Documentary film focusing on 62-yearold Bradford woman Marina Chapman, who claims to have lived for seven years with a troop of capuchin monkeys in the jungle of her native Colombia from the age of five. The film follows her journey back to Colombia as she tries to uncover her origins and identity with the help of several experts in the fields of psychology, primatology and genetic research. The programme also seeks to investigate the veracity of her claims.
The award-winning comedy returns for a third series. It’s finally happened: Adam is bringing a girl - or as dad would say, ‘female’ - home for dinner. Mum is so excited, and immediately takes a shine to twentysomething Emma, who is definitely marriage material. Adam and Emma get on brilliantly, but just as things start going smoothly, the evening takes a turn with the arrival of eight-year-old Katie, who has a huge girlie crush on Adam, much to Jonny’s delight.

A Culture Show Special BBC2, 20:00
The Battle for Stonehenge. Alastair Sooke looks at the controversy over the site surrounding Stonehenge. It is Britain’s most famous prehistoric monument, but all is not well with the sacred stones. MPs have criticised the site and, after decades of disputes over what should be done, English Heritage has just 12 months to create a setting that this unique monument deserves. But Stonehenge is more than a tourist attraction, it is also a temple. In this hour-long Culture Show special, Alastair Sooke shows that Stonehenge has long been a place of conflict and controversy, and that passions still run high at the monument where druids, archaeologists and scientists all battle for the soul of Stonehenge.
Royal Ascot Channel 4, 13:40
Clare Balding and Nick Luck present all the action, elegance and drama of the fifth and final day of Royal Ascot, while Gok Wan reports on the fashion. Today’s highlight is the Diamond Jubilee Stakes: a Group One 6f contest won two years ago by the great Aussie sprinter Black Caviar, and last year by Britain’s sprint champion Lethal Force.

A look back at last year’s memorable Wimbledon tournament, which featured Andy Murray’s historic men’s singles victory. Britain had not had a men’s singles winner since Fred Perry in 1936, but Murray ended that 77-year wait in style by beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets. France’s Marion Bartoli also made history with her first Grand Slam title in the women’s tournament, claiming the title without losing a set after a dominant two weeks in south-west London.
A Cabbie Abroad BBC2, 21.00 London Cabbie Mason McQueen has accepted the challenge to drive a taxi in three very different cities around the world. This week, in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, he will be getting to grips with a unique kind of cab – the tuk tuk. Six thousand of these primitive adapted scooters ferry passengers across Phnom Penh every day in a city where the law of the road is survival of the fittest. Mason’s host is Cambodian tuk tuk driver Polo Doot, who scrapes a living in one of the city’s poorest slums and whose job it is to train Mason to navigate the chaos and anarchy of Phnom Penh’s streets. Famed for its ancient Khmer temples and French colonial architecture, Cambodia attracts more than 3 million tourists a year. But as London cabbie Mason will discover, the country is still coming to terms with a dark past of tyranny and genocide under Pol Pot and his infamous Khmer Rouge. In recent decades, billions of dollars of foreign aid and investment has led to property boom in the country. But a third of Cambodians live on less than a few dollars a day and there’s little evidence that they are benefitting from the city’s new wealth. As Mason will witness, a new generation, less haunted by Pol Pot’s rule of fear, are now taking to the streets. Victims of land grabs and striking workers are joining forces, but their protests are being violently suppressed by the state. It’s a tough and emotional journey and after just 10 days of training, one plucky cockney cabbie will try to hack it as a Cambodian tuk tuk driver.
Fiona Bruce and the experts make a second visit to the University of East Anglia in Norwich. Objects under inspection include a rare 18th-century glass bought for 10p from a charity shop, a pair of Queen Victoria’s amazingly large knickers and a special sports day medal awarded during an early-20th-century expedition to the Antarctic

Mr. Popper’s Penguins Channel 4, 18:15
Jim Carrey stars in director Mark Waters’ family comedy, loosely based on a classic children’s book. Tom Popper is a New York property shark with a failed marriage and a strained relationship with his kids. Popper’s own father was an explorer, usually absent while Tom was growing up. That could be reason for Tom’s emotional disengagement, but his father certainly is the reason Tom ends up receiving a crate of six gentoo penguins - a bequest from the old man’s deathbed. Manhattan isn’t the obvious place in which to care for the birds, but not only does Popper quickly bond with his charges, his adventures with them also act as a springboard for possible reconciliation with his family - as well as ample opportunity for Carrey to ply his trademarked rubber-faced, flexedlimbed comedic turn. The penguins are real ones, their antics only enhanced rather than generated by CGI.

Sports-themed entertainment show with impressionist and sports fanatic Alistair McGowan. It skewers the funniest, quirkiest and silliest moments from televised sport using a mix of clips, sketches and impressions. The series marks McGowan’s return to writing sketches and performing new impressions after eight years trying his hand at other acting work. Being topical, it features stories from the week preceding the original broadcast.
Police Under Pressure BBC2, 21.00 British policing is under pressure like never before as forces up and down the country try to cope with the biggest cuts to their budgets in modern times. South Yorkshire Police has more trouble than most. It’s struggling to rebuild a reputation tainted by the tragedy of Hillsborough and some of the worst crime figures in Britain. It’s also struggling to keep the peace in some of its most difficult neighbourhoods. In some parts of Sheffield, tension between the existing white and Asian communities and newly arrived Roma from Eastern Europe is threatening to boil over into violence. In other areas, an epidemic of anti-social behaviour threatens to spiral out of control. With exclusive access to both officers on the ground and the most senior ranks, this film follows the neighbourhood police team in Sheffield’s toughest patch as they try to maintain order while coping with ever-decreasing resources. The film raises fundamental questions about the state of modern policing: with cuts biting ever deeper, is it time to accept that there are certain things the police just can’t afford to do?

Shopgirls: The True Story Of Life Behind The Counter BBC2, 21.00 Today, we take it for granted that many of our shop assistants are women, but 150 years ago, being served by a shopgirl was a strange new phenomenon, and the story of how an army of women swept onto our shop floors is a fascinating one. Presented by Dr Pamela Cox, this three-part series follows the journey of the shopgirl from an almost invisible figure in stark Victorian stores, to being the beating heart of our glossy, modern shops. With retail the biggest private sector employer in the UK today, this series charts how shopgirls have been central to Britain’s retail revolution and at the cutting edge of social change. In the first episode, Pamela begins in the mid-19th century, when shops up and down the country were owned and staffed by men, and shopwork was a closed world for most women. A new, emerging middle class had money to spend, but the idea of shopping as a pleasurable experience was still a world away. But as jobs opened in the factories of the big industrial cities, shops no longer had the same ready supply of young male apprentices, and Pamela learns how women’s groups actively sought to promote women’s employment and shrug off the notion that shop work was somehow ‘unladylike’. As the Victorians became increasingly consummate shoppers, the experience of shopping became more attuned to the demands of lady customers who preferred being served by women. By the late 19th century, the doors to shops across the country were flung open and thousands of women poured in looking for work. Pamela lifts the lid on the working conditions and realities of life for shopgirls, many of whom ‘lived in’ above shops and the new department stores. Often poorly paid, some doubled as sex workers, contributing to the shopgirl’s sometimes seedy reputation in the late Victorian era. But this wave of pioneering women also enjoyed newfound independence and their own money to spend, and penny magazines and music halls offered entertainment that reflected and celebrated their lives: the shopgirl had taken centre stage in popular culture. By the turn of the century, nearly a quarter of a million women were employed in shopwork; they had forged new kinds of work for women and even helped transform the experience of shopping itself. The shopgirl was here to stay.
Sue Barker presents live coverage from the second day’s play at Wimbledon. After Andy Murray began the defence of his title on Centre Court, it should be the turn of the women’s champion. With 2013 winner Marion Bartoli having since retired that tradition will not be observed but there’ll be no shortage of drama in southwest London. Reigning champions Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic both made it through safely on day two in 2013 and the big names in action now will be after similarly serene progress.

Alison Steadman’s Shetland ITV1, 21.00
Actress and ‘twitcher’ Alison Steadman fulfills her ambition to visit Shetland in this new documentary. Alison explores the breathtaking landscape and experiences the region’s abundant wildlife getting to see gannets, otters, puffins and Shetland ponies in their natural habitat. Starting out on the mainland she travels across the region by car and boat and finishes her journey in the Northern region of Hermaness. Along the way Alison tries out sea kayaking, tastes freshly foraged razor clams, wakes up at dawn to go otter spotting and explains how her love of birds and animals first began. Located 200 miles away from Aberdeen, the Shetland Archipelago is inhabited by just 23,000 people and spans across more than 100 islands. On many of the islands there are no shops, and no roads but it is biologically and geographically diverse and home to thriving communities of rare birds. Alison, a self confessed city dweller, begins her trip in Reawick where she begins to acclimatise to the unique scenery and the solitude. She says: “The one thing that’s really kind of amazing me is there are no trees here. I don’t think I’ve ever been anywhere in the world where there are no trees. There’s hardly any people which is something I’m not used to, having lived in two cities my whole life.” One of the birds Alison most wants to see whilst in Shetland is a puffin – a rare bird that can be found in the region. During the high season there will be 1500 puffins in Shetland but at this time of year they are more scarce. Alison travels to Sumburgh Head in South Shetland to meet Helen Moncrieff from the RSPB who has recently seen some on the coast. Alison is delighted to be able to see them in their natural habitat. Once she is out on the water, Alison gains a bit of confidence and her guide Angus points out the spectacular rock formations as well as the different seabirds nesting on the cliffs.

This Old Thing: The Vintage Clothes Show Channel 4, 20:00 Dawn O’Porter loves clothes, but isn’t a follower of fashion. In This Old Thing she wants to prove to people hooked on the high street that buying way too many clothes, that we’ll probably never wear, is not the way to go. Dawn thinks it’s better to go vintage - to fill your wardrobe with beautiful pieces and look great. She wants to show how clothes from the past can help forge a unique style. In the first episode, Dawn has a real challenge with Bristol girl Chevonne, who refuses to shop anywhere other than the high street. Chevonne’s clothes are always brand new. But she’s tired of looking the same as everyone else. Dawn takes Chevonne on an epic shopping trip to show how vintage is a great way to achieve individual style.

Beauty Queen or Bust Channel 4, 21:00
The glitz and glamour of the international Miss World competition has to start somewhere. Each year regional heats take place in ordinary towns and cities across England. This three-part series follows some of the young entrants hoping to make it through the regional beauty pageants in Blackpool, Hull and Wolverhampton. Beauty Queen or Bust charts the highs and lows of being a beauty queen, while also trying to find a job, or start a business, complete their education, or living on their own for the first time. In the first episode, Wolverhampton, Walsall and Dudley used to be a powerhouse of industry, but after decades of decline the Black Country region has the country’s highest rate of unemployment, particularly among women. The cameras follow three entrants in the Miss Black Country heat as they go thought the rigorous rounds - interviews, bootcamp and catwalk - to see if they have what it takes to win the coveted crown.

Tribute to the real deal TENERIFE has always been an entertainment centre that offers an immense amount of variety.
There are artistes who have made this little Island their home and have carved out a colourful career, performing on the many stages and venues around. Many bars here have always opted for the tribute act, or an act with some kind of theme or selling point. This makes it more difficult for artistes working under their own name and not marketing themselves under a famous name. The number of solo artistes who work as themselves has dwindled over recent years, and only the best are still operating.

Cy Benson
THIS year has seen an increase in the number of female vocalists working on the circuit, and all seem to be doing very well.
WHEN I decided to set up shop in Tenerife, the name my UK artiste pals told me to seek out was Cy Benson.
Everybody who spoke about this man had nothing but praise for him, and I was told he would help me get started here. They were not wrong. What a nice guy. Cy has helped lots of people over the years. Whether it be with a little vocal coaching, or just advice on how to formulate a set list, he has always been available - and is always one of the first to volunteer his services to help those in need. He has a huge vocal range and the power of an operatic tenor. Soul and Motown are the two genres Cy holds dear, and his tone lends itself well to
BOTH bars have had a busy time over the last few weeks and the cabaret shows have had some brilliant people in the audience. Ye Olde Ocean and First & Last strive to
both. He is a big man, commanding the stage and the audience with a presence that oozes professionalism. He is always the smartest-dressed person in the room, with tailor-made stage suits and shiny shoes. His manner with the audience is cheeky, and many people who fill the venues where Cy Benson is performing have gone there specifically to see him. As a performer, he has
built up a strong following, and he is probably the best-known singer on the Island. The accolades he has received over the years are unsurpassed by any artiste in Tenerife. Cy Benson is a king of cabaret and will continue to hold the respect of the entertainment community for many years. Although I don’t think he will be expecting to see the sleeve of one of his first vinyl releases on Bullseye Records here in the Canarian Weekly.
offer contrasting entertainment programmes, centred on the 11pm c a b a r e t show and, of course, the ever popular karaoke. At the moment, there hasn’t been any disruption to the entertainment, despite the World Cup showing in both bars. And where possible, the show times have been brought forward so that artistes do not lose
out on any work and also, those who are not football crazy get to see their favourite singers. The atmosphere for the England v Italy game was electric and although England lost, compere Kayleigh Dickenson was able to turn it around and kept the party going until just after 2am. Both bars have ample seating and plenty of big screens. And even though both venues are big places, it doesn’t take long to fill up for the popular shows and the big matches.
Seven years ago, there were not that many female artistes working here. This was a good enough reason for Emma Jenson to move to Tenerife to tread the boards here. Emma had been visiting the island as a holiday-maker and had always expressed an interest in coming here to work. Eventually, after a couple of years, Emma took the plunge and relocated. She really hasn’t looked back since. She is every bit the “rock chic” her posters say she is. Her voice is totally suited to the rock genre, and, whether classic or modern, she can handle pretty much
EMMA JENSON
any song. Emma is a natural on stage, able to talk to an audience as if they were in her own front room. This really is endearing and by the end of her show, you will feel as though
you are friends. Emma’s show covers all kinds of rock and if I had to compare her voice to someone, I’d say it lies between the power of Suzie Quattro and the individuality of Cher.

By Val Sainsbury OMEGA-3 fatty acids, abundant in oily fish, help stop tiny blood vessels from bleeding into the back of the eye.
The finding, by a research team from Harvard Medical School, is important because damage to retinal blood is behind a range of conditions that can lead to loss of sight This includes many cases of age-related, macular degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of blindness in the elderly. AMD affects more than 600,000 Britons, and that number is expected to treble in the next 25 years as the population ages. There are few treatments - and no cure - for the condition.
20th June 2014 - 26th June 2014
Keep an eye on fish oils
The research focused on ‘wet AMD’, the most serious form, in which central vision can be lost within months
In the study, a diet rich in omega-3 cut damage to the blood vessels in mice with an AMD-like eye disease.
The healthy fats, found in mackerel, trout, herring, sardines, tuna and salmon, stopped damaging immune cells
from fuelling the disease. It is not clear whether fish-oil supplements alone will be enough help save sight in people. That’s because the body may find it harder to process and make use of omega-3 as we age. However, the findings do point to a drug related to fish oil. With existing drugs expensive, injected directly into the eye and not effective in all cases, the researchers said there was an urgent need for new treatments. Researcher Dr Kip Connor said the fats seemed to have a “vital role” in eye health. He also said that given the prevalence of AMD, and a related form of blindness in diabetics, the “potential impact
of this study is highly significant”. Patients with other diseases fed by rogue blood vessels, such as cancer, may also benefit from the knowledge. Dr Connor added: “It is our hope that future studies will allow us to develop specific therapeutics that harness this knowledge, resulting in greater visual outcome and quality of life for patients suffering from these sightthreatening diseases.” In the meantime, he advises that everyone eats oily fish, or takes omega-3 supplements for all-round health. Omega-3 has previously been credited with health benefits, from keeping high blood pressure at bay to helping ward of Alzheimer’s disease.
Dreaded dentist’s drill might soon be obsolete THE horrors of going to the dentist, especially the injections and that awful drill, frighten the life out of most people. But relief could be on
the horizon because scientists have unveiled a technique which makes a rotten tooth repair itself. It will be a major relief for the thousands who dread the pain so much that they avoid going to the dentist completely. Drilling has always been necessary to re-
move decaying and infected material, enabling dentists to replace them with fillings, such as amalgam or composite resin. But the new, pain-free tooth-rebuilding treatment could be available in just three years, according to the British researchers who created it. Electrically Accelerated and Enhanced Remineralisation (EAER), developed at King’s College London, accelerates the natural movement of calcium and phosphate minerals into the damaged tooth. The two-step process works by first preparing the damaged area of enamel and then, using a tiny electrical current to push minerals into the repair site. The tooth is re-mineralised painlessly, without the need for drilling, injections or fillings. Professor Nigel Pitts,
from King’s College London’s Dental Institute, said: “The way we treat teeth today is not ideal. “When we repair a tooth by putting in a filling, that tooth enters a cycle of drilling and re-filling as, ultimately, each repair fails. “Not only is our device kinder to the patient and better for their teeth, but it’s expected to be at least as cost-effective as current dental treatments.” He added: “Along with fighting tooth decay, our device can also be used to whiten teeth.” A spin-off firm called Reminova has been set up to commercialise the research. The Perth-based company is now seeking private investment to develop the new technology. It is the first such firm to emerge from the King’s College London
Dental Innovation and Translation Centre, which was set up in January to turn novel technologies into new products and practices. King’s College is part of MedCity, a project launched by London Mayor, Boris Johnson to promote entrepreneurship in the London-Oxford-Cambridge life sciences’ so-called “golden triangle”. MedCity advisory board member Kit Malthouse said: “It’s brilliant to see the creative research taking place at King’s making its way out of the lab so quickly and being turned into a new device. “It has the potential to make a real difference to the dental health and patient experience of people with tooth decay.” The decay occurs when bacteria in the mouth penetrates the
tooth enamel, making its way into the soft layer underneath, known as dentine. Eventually the bacteria eat into the tooth, creating cavities. This triggers toothache, which is usually the first time the patient notices something is wrong. If patients then fail to go to the dentist quickly enough, the tooth will rot and eventually fall out, while the infection spreads to their gums. Currently, the only way to repair tooth cavities is for dentists to remove the damaged parts with a drill and then insert a filling into the resulting hole. About 25% of people are afraid of going to the dentist. The reasons can vary from bad experiences in the dentist’s chair as a child, to the sound of the drill and the fear of having an injection.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS
The only thong is Essex in the heat By Ruth Benson
By Carl from Robot
THE weather is certainly hotting up, and it appears to have inspired a new range of men’s swimwear which will be sure to get temperatures rising in more way than one.
MANY a time in the salon, we have to let people down during our consultation regarding their expectations of what they want, and what can be done.
As regular readers of my column will know, I have a particular hatred of Speedos and it seems that I’m not the only one. It is reported that 98% of women dislike this particular swimwear. But I have a feeling that this number might be lower in Scandinavia and Germany! However, it is not Speedos which have hit the headlines and social media in the last fortnight, but a new range worn by Bobby Norris and Harry Derbridge, from TOWIE. The lads were spotted in Marbella, filming for the next series of the popular ITV show wearing this new swim item. The particular fashion item has been designed
by French company Inderwear as “the alter lateral flash thong”. They come (sorry!) in red, white and blue - funny that choice of colour with them being French. Sizes range from large, medium and, dare I say it, small. For those of you thinking of purchasing one of the latest male thongs, don’t worry, Even though they are being worn by “celebrities”, the prices are actually more high street and a very reasonable 22 euros. Having seen all the pictures of the TOWIE guys, curiosity got the better of me and I have looked on the site itself where, actually, there are reviews of the thong. It has so far received five out of five stars, with reviews stating
“very sexy’”, “a product of good quality” and my favourite, which comes from a gentlemen called Bruno, who describes them as “very comfortable, maintains the male anatomy very well and sensual and sexy”. Now, looking at the “lateral flash thong”, you men may worry that the support might be lacking. But the site states, as with all its products, that it ensures “optimal support and comfort throughout the course of the day’”. So gents, what are you waiting for? Let’s see those all-over tans this summer. Us ladies can’t wait - or not, as the case may be. One word of caution, though: they shouldn’t be worn on a chilly afternoon in Skegness!
Try to forget those so stressful times A STRESSFUL job and lifestyle could damage a person’s shortterm memory from the age of around 65.
A study by scientists at the University of Iowa revealed that having high levels in cortisol - a natural hormone in the body, which increases when a person is stressed - can lead to memory lapses in later life, Short-term increases in cortisol levels are vital for survival, they say. The hormone allows a person to cope, helping
the body to respond to life’s challenges by making it more alert and allowing a person to think on his/her feet. But abnormally high or prolonged spikes in cortisol, developing from long-term, stressful situations, can lead to digestion problems, anxiety, weight gain and high blood pressure. Jason Radley, an assistant psychology professor at the Iowa university, said: “Stress hormones are one mechanism we believe leads to weathering of the brain. “Like a rock on the shoreline, it will break down and disappear af-
ter years and years.” The scientists linked the raised levels of cortisol to the gradual loss of synapses in the region of the brain that houses short-term memory. Synapses are the connections which help the brain process, store and recall information. As a person ages, repeated and long-term exposure to cortisol can cause these synapses to shrink and disappear. Although the results are preliminary, scientists believe they could provide the basis for research into how shortmemory decline in ageing adults could be slowed or prevented.

Being a stylist sometimes isn’t easy when a client is asking for one thing and we have to explain why this just can’t be done. Sometimes, it’s because what is being asked for just won’t suit the client, or that it’s just not physically possible. When someone enters the salon and wants something specific, then it’s up to us to be honest and say whether it’s going to look good, or if we need to modify things. There’s no point just going ahead without explaining a variety of ins and outs to you. For example, is what’s being asked for possible with your hair? If you’re asking for a smooth style on curly hair, are you going to spend the time getting rid of those curls? If you want minimum fuss only and are short of time, styling-wise, then this is going to limit your style choice. You have to go with what you have been given naturally … there’s no point expecting volume and bounce on finer hair
because it’s not going to happen. So, too, if you want a change of colour. What you may be asking for could be too damaging to your hair, or that you’re not going to keep up to those tell-tale roots! We have to take all this into account when consulting you before we start work. It’s never a case of slapping something on and hoping it turns out right. If your stylist is advising you over a request, you know he/she has your best interests at
heart. Don’t be put off if they’re saying No to something because it’s usually for a good reason. I never turn down work without giving good reasons why it’s not possible. At the end of a, “No, I can’t do that”, should always come a “This is why not”, and an alternative to what’s being asked for. None of us is born with perfect hair, so it is up to you and your stylist to make the most of what you’ve been given. And what suits you!

Carlos Restaurant, Puerto Colon
If it’s good enou APART from being iconic entertainers, there can’t be much that links the late Harry Secombe and Boy George.
It appears, however, that both were rather partial to the culinary creations of Portuguese chef Joao Martins. Joao and his wife, Mandy, made the decision to relocate to Tenerife in 2006 after years of running a successful eatery in Devon. Eight years on and the couple’s restaurant, Carlos, continues to thrive, with residents and tourists alike flocking to experience some of the best international cuisine to be found in the South. Carlos is ideally-located under Club Atlantis, a stone’s throw from the popular Puerto
Colón beach. Walking on to the terrace, I was amazed at the stunning Bedouinstyle canopy in soft terracotta tones covering the entire area. And four huge ceiling lights, whose handsomely-styled, cutout metalwork recalls the beautiful handwrought lamps of a Moroccan marketplace, cast a warm glow over the diners. Flowering shrubs and plants, and the tinkling of a fountain, further help create the impression of an oasis of tranquillity. Carlos is very much a family business. Mandy Martins heads the friendly and efficient team of waiting staff, and even teenage son Luke has now been drafted in to help behind the scenes. Nibbling on some delicious Prawn and Beetroot Crostini, and sip-
ping a glass of chilled rosé wine, we perused the menu. Given that Joao was born and raised in Madeira, his signature dishes, as you would expect, include some traditional Portuguese fare. The menu also features an inventive medley of Italian, French and Far Eastern influences, from Tagliatelle with Salmon and Prawns through to Thai Green Curry.
A good selection of meats, including steaks and New Zealand lamb, should satisfy the carnivores, while fresh fish is a particular speciality of the house. Vegetarians are certainly not overlooked, with a selection of starters including Breaded Brie, served with Fruits of the Forest Dip, and mains such as Mushroom and Vegetables in Brandy and Cream Sauce, served with Rice. Daily
specials complete this unparalleled offering. Accompanying this fare is a good wine list, catering for all tastes and budgets. Prices start from 12 euros for the house selection. I can also recommend Mandy’s home-made Sangria, but with one caveat: it packs quite a punch! Back to our dinner, and although Melon with Spanish Cured Ham Drizzled with Olive Oil sounded
tempting, I decided to opt for one of Carlos’ more unusual starters: Stuffed Peaches filled with Chicken. Topped off with melted cheese, these melt-inthe-mouth creations certainly didn’t disappoint. My partner, meanwhile, in a nod to Joao’s culinary roots, went for the Prawns Piri Piri. This is, apparently, one of the restaurant’s most popular starters, and it’s not hard to see why.

ugh for Harry… The combination of tender prawns in a sauce of tomatoes, cream, mushrooms, onions and chilli, which was spicy without being overpowering, was delicious. For my main course, I took Mandy’s advice and chose the Espedata de Madeira, a traditional dish of succulent beef kebab, hanging on a skewer dripping with garlic butter. The other half, meanwhile, plumped for Fish Portuguese, tender white fillets, topped with tomatoes, garlic, white wine, cream, prawns and mushrooms. He was amazed at how moist the fish was - so much so that he sought out Joao to commend him personally! Our host revealed
that the secret was in the preparation, with all the fish on the menu grilled in lemon and butter, rather than on the plancha. All main courses, unless otherwise stated, are served with chef ’s potatoes and a selection of vegetables, and we finished our meal pleasantly sated. Full as we were, it would have been churlish to refuse dessert. While my partner went for some light-as-afeather, home-made cheesecake, I decided to show some admirable restraint by ordering the fruit kebab! By now the restaurant was full, both on the terrace and in the beautifully- designed interior, complete with its high end but com-
fortable furnishings, subtle decorations and soft lighting. There were a number of families enjoying both the food and the surroundings. Children are well catered for at Carlos, with a range of special menus starting from just five euros. In addition, many of the main dishes can be served in small portions. As we left this charming establishment, we couldn’t help but feel that Devon’s loss has been very much Tenerife’s gain! Located on Av Colón, CC Club Atlantis, San Eugenio, Puerto Colón, Carlos opens from Monday to Saturday, 6pm until late. For reservations call 922 712 257 or 634 703 133.
Food budgets really slashed in Canaries CANARY Island families reduced their food budget by 13.7% between 2010 and 2013 - the most cut-backs in the whole of Spain.
The average annual spend on food was 3,842 euros in 2013, well under the 4,450-euro national average, which amounted to a decrease of just 2.6%. The data was provided
by the AIS group in its Consumer Habits study. Only Extremadura had a lower average food spend in 2013, at 3,805 euros per year. Expenditure on food increased in just five regions: Madrid (+0.8%), Castilla La Mancha (+1.6%), Castilla y León (+1.6%), Basque Country (+2.3%) and Murcia (+3.4%). The outlay on bread and cereals fell by 6.5% to 668 euros in Spain from 2010 to 2013, but spending on meat rose
by 0.5% to an average of 1,050 euros per year. And those who bought fish also cut back, by 3.4% to 510 euros per year. Consumption of dairy and eggs saw a fall of 4.8% to 535 euros on average, and fruit and vegetables also declined (-2.5% to 780 euros). Meanwhile, sugar and sweet goods rose by 2% to 165 euros annually, and alcohol spending fell by 11.6% to 185 euros per year.

By Monica Dyson AS far as my grandchildren’s generation are concerned, it seems that milkmen in the UK, with a few exceptions, are now in the history books.
Come to think of it, very few things do exist here in the same way! But tradesmen and the services they provided have seen a very big social change, and so this should provide a real nostalgic journey for many of you expats! It was unheard of for a week to go past without someone calling at your door. In the Fifties, you had more callers in the way of friends and families, as there were no telephones to announce the fact that you would be arriving, welcome or not! And there were not many days that the door wouldn’t be pushed open and a neighbour shout, “It’s only me, luv”. There didn’t seem to be quite the same lev-
20th June 2014 - 26th June 2014
The black-faced coal frighteners el of loneliness in those days. The road you lived on was often very quiet, with hardly any traffic. Mums, for the most part, were at home all day, and there was always someone to talk to over the garden hedge when hanging washing out. There were plenty of tradesmen calling from day to day. It would start in the early morning when, even before you got out of bed, you could hear the milk float or the horse-drawn cart, and then the clink of bottles as the milkman ran up your path to collect the milk checks, from the front step and deposit the corresponding number of bottles of milk. Milkmen always seemed to run a lot in those days, didn’t they? Later, the postman would call. Always on foot as the sorting office would not be far away, so he could call back regularly to replenish his stock. Postmen always
looked smart in a uniform, which included a collar and tie, lapel badge and a flat-peaked cap. He was always a welcome sight. But not so the telegraph boy on his bicycle, as he was traditionally thought of as the bearer of bad news and, although no one had a telephone, and it was quick and easy to send a telegram, it was also very expensive and used in extreme cases only. Coal was delivered to our house quite frequently. The coalmen hoisted the sacks on to their shoulders and carried them up the path at the side of the house to the back yard, where the coal was deposited in a heap. My mother would transfer it to the coalhouse inside the back door using a shovel. The coalmen were large, frightening-looking men, with faces and hands blackened by the coal-dust ,wearing flat caps, neckerchiefs and leather jackets. That
was manual work with a vengeance! The bin-men also had a very heavy job. Unbelievably, we never touched our bin, apart from cleaning it out. The bin-man came to the back yard, hoisted the bin on to his shoulders and down the path to the waiting bin lorry, where it was lifted up on to a platform and into the cadaverous innards of the vehicle. Then the empty bin was deposited back in our yard. The insurance man was a weekly caller. Often, it was the Man from the Pru, who collected the “shilling-a-week” premium our parents felt was necessary to provide a bit of something to bury them with. Usually, though, falling well short of the actual sum when the time came. Also, with an invested interest in the hereafter, was the priest from church, who gathered the weekly “outdoor” collection money, which was not begrudged by
my God-fearing parents. A little harder to afford was the bottle of whisky, in order to offer him a wee dram. A little strange when they had signed a pledge of temperance themselves! It was said by the Encyclopaedia Britannica salesman that without it, no child would ever pass the “Eleven Plus”. Unfortunately, my father felt that it was something the household budget could not afford, and, fortunately, my sister and I passed the exam to go to Grammar school without its help! Many households relied on shops for clothes and household goods, where you could pay for what you had purchased on a weekly basis. So a frequent caller at many houses was the tallyman, and it wasn’t unheard of for families to hide behind the sofa when they heard him knock if things had been a bit tight, money-wise, that week!
Paper boy, window cleaner, door-to-door salesmen with brushes and cleaning equipment, gas man. You name it, they made a frequent appearance. One of the more intriguing callers was the Sheik with a turban, who had a suitcase containing men’s ties and socks. If he made a sale, he would give you a small, lucky, ivory scarab. We never knew where he came from or why he suddenly stopped calling, but he was certainly a bit of exotica in a pretty ordinary life! But our favourite was always the rag-andbone man. We loved to hear him shout out, then go to pat his horse hoping for a balloon, although mother usually got a piece of donkey stone with which to whiten the front steps. And, if we were extremely lucky, there might be a small deposit to collect with a shovel and put on father’s rhubarb patch!
Accion del Sol news
Who’s a clever boy then? THE refuge had closed its doors for the day. But a short while later, the security surveillance cameras picked up a very thin Canarian Warren Hound.
He was waiting patiently outside the entrance gates to be allowed in - unaware that Accion has a strict policy that dogs are accepted only from Civil Protection or by the police. But an exception was made for this poor dog as it needed help desperately and medical treatment to a recent leg injury. It calmly entered the refuge and allowed us to bath him before having
food and water - then on to the veterinary clinic for his initial treatment. He was checked and found to have no microchip, so we do not know whether he was just lost or had been abandoned. At least he was clever enough to seek help at the refuge. Accion del Sol spent
a busy day last Saturday, raising awareness on animal welfare at the Arona In Colours annual event. Many children joined in the many activities offered by refuge staff. The next big date for your diary is 6th July (26pm), when our annual Summer Party takes
place. This will be a super fun day for the kids, with lots of water-based activities. So swimwear is a must for youngsters. There are more than 200 dogs at the refuge, all seeking new homes, and maybe you are not able to commit to adopting one. But we are always looking for volunteers to walk the dogs in the beautiful surrounding areas of the refuge.
If you would like to be involved, please contact the sanctuary, or visit at the appointed opening hours and make a dog or two really happy. Please call 922 778 630 for more information, or if you would like to help out in any way. Towels and blankets are always needed for the dogs and would be very much appreciated by staff and animals alike.
The refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological park ITER, where the windmills are. We are open to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 2-5pm and on Saturdays between 1-4pm. We are closed on Wednesdays, Sundays and on public holidays.

New golf in the swing
By Jav VOLKSWAGEN’S new Golf Sportsvan, or SV as it will be known in the UK, will replace the long-lived Volkswagen Golf Plus.
The car is slightly larger than a Golf hatchback, offering more interior space and a larger boot. It is based on the latest seventh generation Golf and looks as though it is between a hatch and an MPV - but it’s certainly a lot easier on the eye than the model it will replace. Additionally, there is more rear leg and headroom, and the rear row of seats can be adjusted for better comfort. Or a slight increase in luggage space, depending on the owner’s needs. Four petrol engines will be offered, with outputs ranging from 85PS to 150PS, and there will be three diesel engines with 90PS, 110PS or 150PS. The SV, taking advantage of the Mk7 Golf’s flexible MQB architecture, offers “proper” MPV proportions. And, size-wise, it is similar to Ford’s fun-to-drive yet practical C-Max. The shape equals more cabin space, and VW have largely managed to retain the hatchback’s much-loved design by using tricks such as a glasshouse-extending fifth side-window and bonnet-lengthening creases. In fact, a glimpse at the SV on the road and
you could mistake it for a normal five-door Golf, which is not something you’d have done with the Plus. There’s familiarity in the specs of the standard Golf. The driver sits at least 59mm higher than in the hatchback, too, giving him a good view through the glass expanse, while not being made to feel he’s too high. Door bins are generous front and rear, but cunning storage solutions are few. Mid-range trim brings drawers under the front seats, but they’re small and awkward to access. Likewise, the rear seating lacks an innovative edge. The bench slides 180mm fore and aft and folds and reclines, all of which can be done as a whole or with a 60/40 split. A top-spec C-Max’s rear seats additionally tumble forward or can be
removed altogether, and its central seat can stow away to release more room for the remaining tenants. But the middle pew is both skinny and inhibited by the MQB’s fixedtransmission tunnel. Yet head and leg room is excellent front and back, even with the rear bench in its midway setting. The boot has a flexible floor which can be set to various heights (including flush to the boot lip), and has flaps that smooth over the notquite-flat floor when the seats are folded forward. There’s also an option to fold the front passenger seat, creating a 2,484mm-long space. The driving experience is classic Mk7 Golf fare: untaxing, comfortable and largely refined, with a decent helping of agility. Push on bendy roads and the balance of body
control and ride quality is well struck, while the latest-generation XDS electronic, differential lock quietly trims your line using the brakes on both axles. Sharp ridges are more heard than felt at low speed, and a host of available safety kit, such as city brake assist and self-parking, simplify urban sorties. And motorway progress is rocksolid. The 148bhp 2.0 TDI engine delivers plenty of pep via the positive six-speed, manual gearbox, despite a 120kg weight penalty over the hatchback which adds just 0.6sec to the 9.2sec 0-62mph stat. The equally-powerful version of the 1.4 TSI engine also suffers a wearing engine note, but pulls well from 2000rpm all the way to 6000rpm. The 123bhp version of the same engine is sweeter - almost tune-
ful - and still manages to reach 62mph in a decent 9.9sec. But the manual gearbox in both 1.4s is lighter and less satisfying than in the diesel. The hatchback performance of the 1.2 TSI (in entry-level, £18,875 84bhp guise or with 108bhp), suggests their lower-powered versions might struggle with the SV’s added weight. But these budgetfriendly Golf SV models emit no more than 117g/ km of CO2 - the 108bhp diesel BlueMotion variant managing an estimated 95g/km - and return impressive low-70s economy for the diesel and mid-50s for the petrol. Both use a rear torsion beam rather than the multi-link set-up of other SVs, saving a few more precious quid. Trim levels mostly mirror those of the hatch and estate. Steel-
wheeled, entry-level S spec includes roof rails, a 5.8in colour touchscreen, Bluetooth, DAB radio, air-con, seven airbags and XDS electronic differential. SE additions include colour-coded door mirrors and handles, 16in alloys, adaptive cruise control, city brake assist, pre-crash seatbelt tensioning, frontseat drawers and seatback picnic tables, while range-topping GT models also get 15mm-lowered sports suspension, 17in alloys, sat-nav, part Alcantara upholstery and front and rear parking sensors. VW’s super-slick DSG dual-clutch automatic gearbox can be had on all but the 84bhp 1.2 TSI for a £1,415 premium. It offers six speeds when paired with the 2.0 TDI but seven speeds in all other guises, and slightly improves economy in the petrols but stifles it in the oil-burners. A Ford C-Max 2.0 TDCi Titanium X costs £275 more than the Golf SV 2.0 TDI SE, but is quicker, more involving, more flexible of accommodation - and brings extra luxuries. However, the VW’s superior economy, a host of modern safety tech and faithfulness to the hyper-polished and desirable Mk7 Golf template will likely sway those buyers less-dynamically focused. Prices range from £18,875-£26,815, and there will be something for everyone who’s still in love with VWs.
Dirty diesels pollute atmosphere in the UK CONCERN is growing at the rising number of old diesels on Britain’s roads, and the potential air-quality damage they could be causing. Ministers should consider scrapping the oldest and dirtiest diesels in the UK to improve air quality, according to the RAC Foundation. They have called for the most polluting models - those around 10
years or older - to be taken off the road. In a new report, Foundation officials claim there are 29,000 premature deaths every year through lack of air quality. Now, they are calling on the Government to do something to lower harmful pollutants, which can cause serious illnesses like asthma, heart conditions and
cancer. The popularity of diesel cars has soared in the last 20 years. Lower CO2 emissions and better fuel economy have seen numbers rise from 1.6m in 1994 to 10.1 million in 2013. But older diesels, typically, emit more nitrogen oxide and particulate matter than petrol cars, and these are linked to poor air qual-
ity and health issues. “Many people believed that by buying diesels, they’d get better fuel consumption and help fight global warming through low CO2 emissions,” said Prof. Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation. “But such was the focus on the planet that policy-makers missed the impact the older
diesel models, in particular, have on health in urban areas. The car industry have accepted the challenge of cleaning up diesel engines, but we need to deal with the legacy of the dirtiest diesels.” A Department for Transport spokesman said there were no current plans to introduce such a scheme, and that other projects were
already helping to improve air quality. He added: “There have been major improvements in air quality over the past two decades, and we’re investing £2billion on a range of actions to improve it further. These include promoting ultra-low emission vehicles, greener public transport, walking and cycling.”

Money from the
By Margaret Tully
HONEYSUCKLE
( L o n i c e r a japonica) is the
Honeysuckle
most wonderful vine to have in your garden space.
I have three because I love them, and they grow really well in my site. They are all planted with their roots in moist, shaded soil and their heads in the sun. They are in bloom at the moment, but it varies as to when they flower here, depending on your conditions and the weather. I have seen my vines flowering a couple of times a year. They are a very useful plant to have, as the flowers are excellent for wildlife and humans. Are you short on cash? Honeysuckle has a long tradition in folklore of being the bringer of prosperity. Bring a few flowers into your home to draw in the pounds. Saying this, prosperity comes in more forms than money. It is also a powerful plant to sever ties with the past. Just simply making a tea with a few of the flowers, or sitting in a chair in the garden beside its vanillascented flowers, can help to heal the past. I personally think the flowers look like dancing fairies and are as sweet as honey, literally! An American girl passed on a wonderful story to me about her eating the honey from the honeysuckle as a child. Just by picking the flowers and nipping
out the end, the internal thread comes out with a tiny drip of honey-like liquid on it. Delicious! It’s the little bit of nectar the bees or hummingbirds cannot reach. Yet another use for this plant is the actual vine itself. The Cherokee Indians used to weave baskets from them. Using the soft, green, pliable vine parts, it can be tightly woven and then left to dry out. It actually turns brown and hard, and longlasting. Now that I have sold it to you, hopefully, it is easy to come by in your
local garden centre, or you can obtain a plant by getting a cutting. The way I like to propagate is to take a part of the vine that is trailing on to the ground, make a small nick in it and place this into a pot of earth, securing it in the pot with a little piece of bent-over wire. Water well and leave it, always making sure it gets enough water, and soon - well, not that soon - a new plant will start to root into the pot, Then you can cut it away from the Mother plant. You can place several
cuttings into a pot of earth, removing all the lower leaves and pushing each one down the side of the pot, between the earth and the inner side of the pot. Water well and cover with a clear plastic bag. Secure with a rubber band and leave in a warm, light but not sunny place and you may get one or two plants from this method. Honeysuckle can also be grown in a pot on a patio, and will produce lots of flowers as the plant will be stymied from producing lots of green foliage.
But make sure you scrape off the top layer of soil regularly and top dress with new compost at least once a year, just to give it a good dose of food. It will grow in virtually any type of soil, but it likes to stretch its legs in an ideal situation. Planting out gives it room, and it has been known to climb up trees, reaching a height of over 30 feet. You can control its spread by simply cutting it back. I have always let my three plants romp around for a couple of years, and then cut them hard back. This helps them get rid of any possible disease, and they come back stronger than ever. In no time at all, they are re-covering the wall. But you must provide them with something to get hold of, and I like to use wires strung along the wall. At the moment, we have a grid-like trellis. But when I next cut them back, this will be removed because the grid is too small and
I have great difficulty in removing the dead plant material from it. A loose-climbing system is best. The fragrance is at its best in the evening, simply because the vine likes to attract moths. I know, I also have childhood memories of hiding under the bed clothes because of the large moths flying around in my bedroom. But they are very useful creatures to the eco-system and if you give them a sweet honeysuckle, they won’t even notice your bedroom light on. There are many honeysuckles, and the one I have is the yellowand-white flowered variety, which is the most robust and common one and, in my opinion, most useful. But they do come in various colours, and another lovely combination is a dusky pink-and-yellow, called “Americana”. It is a beautiful vine and one that I would never be without.
SOW IT… GROW IT… TASTE IT! Ingredients *22 honeysuckle flowers *Pack of gelatine *¾ cup of sugar *Teaspoon of lemon juice *Teaspoon of vanilla essence
Honeysuckle Jelly Method *Prepare the gelatine as per the pack instructions *I put the sugar in a
pan along with enough water to just cover it to melt the sugar *Then I add the 20 honeysuckle flowers
and warm through, to infuse the liquid with the flowers. *Remove from heat and let the liquid cool
down, strain and return the liquid to the pan. *Then I add ½ cup of water and heat through *I add the gelatine and melt it into the sugary liquid *Add the lemon juice,
and the vanilla essence *I then pour into two jelly dishes *Chill in the fridge until set *Serve with a honeysuckle flower on the side Et voilà!

SUSO STAYS!
By Roscoe WHILE the final round of play-off matches is underway, CD Tenerife are busy juggling their players for the new campaign.
Las Palmas and Cordoba battle it out this week to join Eibar and Deportivo La Coruña in La Liga next season, safe in the knowledge they could both actually go up. The winner of the twoleg play-off obviously gets promotion, but there is still no sign of a resolution to the Eibar problem. The Segunda Division champions, you may recall, have to raise over 1.5million euros in a share scheme or they will be relegated - let alone promoted. Last week, Tenerife revealed that they plan to sign 7-10 new players. But on Wednesday they completed what could be the most important signing, as captain Suso inked a new deal. His new contract will keep him in Santa Cruz until June 2017, and ends all talk of a move to Celtic or La Liga. He didn’t want to go, Position
the fans wanted him to with my Island and my stay, so job done. In the team for life.” Essentially, Suso is saying he will end! A few months ago, retire in Santa Cruz. He added: “Staying this deal didn’t seem likely. Talks between here was always my first the player’s agent and choice. Even when talks CD Tenerife were go- went quiet, I was always ing nowhere. That is talking to the manager, in the past now, and Alvaro Cervera, about Suso said: “It’s great the future. “He has been a person to get everything sortwho has always trusted ed. “At the end of this me, and this new deal is agreement, who knows beneficial for both parwhat will happen? But ties.” In fact, Suso said that I am very happy to stay Points PLD Won Draw Lost F A

Cervera was one of the main reasons he wanted to stay. “Cervera staying at the club was important, and 90% of this is down to him,” he revealed. “In these last two years, he has made me grow a lot as a player and as a person, and the truth is that it has a lot to do with him. “I feel proud to have been captain last season, and I really want to reiterate my happiness for both the club and the coach as they value me. “As for the new season, I think we go into it with a greater confidence and hope.”
Suso, born and bred here, also had a message for the fans, saying: “They have always been supporting me, and that is most welcome. “I will try my best on the field for them. Signing this new contract is a proud moment, professionally and personally.” And there was more great news this week as Vitolo rejoined the club nine years after leaving. The local hero cruised through a medical and has signed a two-year contract. The 30-year-old midfielder bleeds Tenerife, and only finances prevented him from join-
ing last season. He had spells at Racing Santander and Celta Vigo, where he earned a dozen Spanish under-21 caps, before enjoying top-flight football in Greece. He played 50 matches for PAOK before moving to Greek giants Panathinaikos. He spent two highly-successful years with them before moving to Turkey in 2013. It’s another coup for Tenerife as there was interest from top-flight sides in Europe and Spain, with Deportivo and Celta Vigo seemingly keen. But the lure of returning to Santa Cruz proved too great for him, and he is a wonderful capture. And he will not be the last! Finally the club have revealed a basic outline of what will happen during pre-season. Players will return to training on 14th July and then, a week later, they will fly to their tradition pre-season camp in La Palma. Tenerife will play the first friendly against local team Tenisca on 25th or 26th July, before home-and-away matches with Las Palmas for the Mahou Cup. This is followed by the traditional match at CD Marino, before the Teide Trophy fixture in La Orotava and the last “Presentation” match in the Heliodoro. That will probably be against a La Liga side such as Celta Vigo, Deportivo, Getafe or Rayo Vallecano.

Darters at the double! AN early break from league action saw the Express Bar Deliveries Darts League players going head to head at six venues as they battled it out for the doubles competition silverware. Indeed, more than 50 pairs entered with
the hope of winning through to the finals night on Friday, 5th September. There were a few shock results along the way, but my sources tell me that everyone enjoyed the competition. Winning pairs Premier League, at Gaffers: Craig/Grant

fund-raising for the season totaled an amazing 1,593 euros. This enabled us to make a donation, reported in issue 855, via EZE Group, of 700 euros to Aaron Suarez. Young Aaron, who goes to Wingate school, is currently receiving cancer
treatment in Madrid. The balance from last season’s fund-raising, 893 euros, will be donated to eight-yearold Aaron Bannister who is battling Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Everyone in the darts league wishes both boys a very speedy recovery.

Adeje’s sporting hat on again ADEJE will be positively bursting with a huge variety of sport during the summer months, as usual.
Swimming, football, water polo, body-boarding and basketball are just some of the activities on offer throughout the municipality for residents, young and old. Many of the sports will be organised by the council, in conjunction with private trainers or groups. Adeje Sports Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferreira says: “We are bringing together different bodies to offer our residents the greatest possible selection of sporting disciplines. “One of the local gov-
ernment’s priorities is to give everyone in the borough the chance to practise sport of some kind, regardless of the family income. “We know that sport is about much more than physical health, and is of huge benefit mentally, developing self-worth and belief.” He added: “The municipal schools have now closed for the holiday and so, during the summer months, we have an interesting sporting programme on offer for potential participants and the public in general.” From 27-29th June, the Council hosts a clinic with athlete Martín Fiz, 1992 winner of the Prince of Asturias sporting prize, and named Best Spanish Athlete three years later.
The clinic will be in conjunction with sessions in Tenerife Top
Training, and theoretical classes in the Adeje School of Dance and
Music. From 18-20th July, there’s a Water Polo tournament, and
the fourth Canarian Body-Boarding Championships will also take place around this time, dates to be confirmed. There will also be a number of camps taking place, with basketball schools in Tijoco Bajo. And the insular goalkeeping school returns to Adeje after a successful camp last year, from 30th June to 5th July, at Fañabe’s municipal ground. The La Caleta Bay swim, open to the public, is on 2nd August, and Adeje’s Youth Football Tournament, teams still to be confirmed, goes ahead in the same month. Finally, the Island’s Domino Championships take place here, from 5-7th September, the winners qualifying for the national event.

All over for the Suicide Squad SO the curtain comes down on Division One of the Direct Telecom Pool League, and the final round of matches provided one final twist in the relegation fight.
Toscales A, who had already been relegated, finished off their campaign against this year’s champions, Hammers A. They put in a spirited performance but couldn’t seize a shock victory to finish off their season. That left two teams fighting to save their skins, Tenerife Hammers C and Terrace Bar A. Treehouse A played Phoenix Knights on
Monday and, in inspired form, they stunned the league’s third-best team and were good value for the three points which made them safe. On Tuesday night, Terrace A, aka The Suicide Squad, always had the harder task as they were facing 2014 runners-up Gaffers A. But they knew they had only to match Hammers C result. Hammers C faced off against Dreamers A, who still needed something to finish fourth, and would be no cannon fodder. The Terrace A lads had home advantage, but they hardly got going and were never in the running. Gaffers A showed their class as Hammers C found a fighting spirit in their game. It was tense

But Hammers
fought back and then surged clear at 5-3. With Gaffers A winning, the Hammers needed just one frame to survive. While the Suicide Squad reached for the rope, Tony’s team found one last effort to take the draw and survive. So the Terrace and famed wooden spoon now look forward to Division Two pool next season. There was still a bit of competition for topfive finishes. Dreamers’ point sealed fourth, and Palms A were hoping to sneak into fifth spot at the expense of Phoenix Potters. Palms were missing a few players, and this gave the Los Abrigos OAP’s the edge. The Werther’s Original lovers took advantage to win 7-5 and grab the final top-five place. It has been a fine season for Inn the Pink A who, despite losing against La Caña A, still finished a creditable sixth. In Division Two, Palms Bar B have been crowned champions

A few months ago their captain Michael “Eeyore” Shaw passed away, and they have been busting a gut to win this for him. They have finished the season strongly and are worthy champions. They should be joined by Inn The Pink B in Division One next season. They were in action twice this week, drawing on Monday night against Terrace Bar B and then taking all the points against Treehouse B a night later. They need just a point next week to make sure. Third spot is still up for grabs. James Place, who have occupied it for a good part of the season, were comfortable winners against Next Door Bar. But Exiles B are just a point behind them and are breathing down their necks. The Silencio team, easier winners against Toscales
B, will be looking for another victory in their last game next week. James Bar have a game in hand over their rivals, but a trip to Bluebell B is no easy task, so it could go either way. Factor in that Bluebell B could still finish in the top five and it makes for a tasty contest. They are currently just two points behind Terrace Bar B and have two games to play, while the Amarilla Golf team have finished their season, so now it’s all about the places. Kandi 13 and Gaffers B will be happy enough finishing seventh and eighth respectively, as Kandi 13 finished their campaign with a draw against Hoppy’s and Gaffers B with a great win against Dreamers B. The rest of the top 10 concludes with Bluebell A and Hoppy’s bar.

By Adi Benson THE greatest show on earth is now well and truly underway and, from a football point of view, it is certainly living up to its billing.
From a TV point of view, though, it has been hit and miss. I took my place on the sofa to watch the opening ceremony. How I wish I hadn’t! It was if, among all the protests and worries about unfinished stadia, they had forgotten they were supposed to be putting on a celebration of all things Brazil. And don’t get me started on Pit Bull and J Lo. The camera angles were all wrong - and as for the sound system, I have a better one in my car. Then 40 minutes later we were done and had to endure nearly two hours of Adrian Chiles. (Editor, do me a favour and speak to Paddy Power. See what odds you can get me on Patrick Vieira punching Adrian Chiles in the face live on air). The BBC commentary team fared better. Well, apart from Phil Neville, who sent thousands of viewers to sleep during the England game with his monotone, mumbling, bus rantings. Anyway to the games… Group A Brazil, the tournament favourites, got off to a winning start, courtesy of a dodgy Japanese ref. The Neymar elbow was blatant and the penalty was soft. Let me say this now: with their defence, they will not win this tournament. Mexico look a decent team and, with better finishing, they would have beaten Brazil. And Croatia are the same. Their great result against Cameroon makes it a winner-takesall battle next week. As for Cameroon, they are done and dusted. Maybe they should have played Roger

Spain’s Chile Con Carnage!
Milla! After all, he is of a similar age to Samuel Eto’o! Group B Holland are looking good, although they may want to think twice about holidaying in Spain in the future. They struggled a little against a spirited Australian team, but they have quality throughout the team and on the bench. They could go far. And as for that goal, Van Persie leapt like a salmon (there you go Ed!). Chile are anything but! In fact, they are red-hot and have been the team of the first week. They are a real handful. They caused Spain all sorts of problems, and they attack with real pace. Nobody will want to face them. Australia gave the Dutch a real fright, but will be home in a few days. Talking of which, Spain came into the tournament as European champions and World Cupholders. They leave the tournament with
their heads hung low and many of the squad facing Spanish archer El Bow! I have said before that the squad were too old, too slow and couldn’t score goals. But worst of all was their arrogance. Here is a tip for them: try shooting! Group C Columbia currently top the group, but it is still wide open. A convincing win against Greece stands them in good stead, and they will still be here next week. The Ivory Coast have also started with a win, and they will feel confident about getting out of the group. They are a talented bunch of players, and their fitness levels are beyond those of us mere mortals. Greece, like their country, looked broken in their opening game. The squad are ageing and it showed in the Brazilian heat, while Japan were easy on the eye and easy on the keeper. Both look doomed. Group D
The Italians grabbed the win against England in their first game, but they didn’t look like world-beaters. By the time you read this, they should be through. And, hopefully, England will nearly be there as well. They should have seen off Uruguay last night, and then it will be just a case of getting past those pesky Costa Ricans. Nobody saw the upset with Uruguay and boy, did they celebrate that win! Group E I’ve got to say, France looked tasty against Honduras. All right, it wasn’t the toughest of tests, but you can only beat what is in front of you - and they did it with a Gallic swagger. Benzema helped himself to a hat-trick and eased the fears of Ribery not being there. Nobody has really tipped them, but they could be a dark horse. Switzerland got the job done with the usual Swiss efficiency, and they will press France all the way in the group.
The team are a little like their knives: they have tools to do different jobs, and the players stick to their tasks well. Ecuador will be hoping France give them a glimmer by beating the Swiss in the next game, but I believe the group stages are where they belong. Honduras, who like a ruck, spent 90 minutes trying to injure as many French players as possible. Nothing wrong with that! Their next game, against Ecuador, could see some real Latin American passion and lost limbs. Group F Argentina were my tip for the tournament, but they looked nervous against Bosnia and were lucky to get the win. They have got some great players, but their No.1 tactic really does seem to be: just give the ball to Messi! Who’d have thought Iran would score a world cup point? They put in a decent enough performance against Nigeria, but I can’t see them picking up any more. Bosnia, at their first World Cup, acquitted themselves well against Argentina. With Nigeria only drawing with Iran, if they can - and they should - win their next two games, they will get out of the group. Group G This may be the first time in a while that we cheered on the Germans. Who didn’t want to see the smile knocked off Ronaldo’s face? They haven’t won the World Cup since Mullets were in fashion (okay, so in Germany they still are) and they look a decent bet here. Portugal were “basura”, as they say here. Pepe is, literally, a head-case, and Ronaldo couldn’t inspire his team-mates. The US hit a late winner against
Ghana, but that may well be the highlight of their World Cup. Ghana is, perhaps, more famous for its cocoa (I know from geography when I was at school) than its football, but great things were expected. That result against the US has made life difficult for them as they now face-off against Germany and Portugal. Group H Belgium makes pretty decent beer and pretty decent footballers. They got off to a nervy start but now they have the win under their belts I expect to see them play better. One point worth pondering over is this: Fellaini now has more World Cup goals than Rooney (well, at the time of going to print!) last night. I tuned in at 11pm on Tuesday night, especially to watch South Korea (okay, I didn’t because I was already in the pub) and they didn’t disappoint. They may not have the physical attributes of some teams, but they have an abundance of skill. I felt Belgium and Russia would progress but I may have to change my mind. Russia looked just like England last time around, and there was everybody believing Fabio Capello was a good manager. They are efficient and organised, but they seemed to be missing a spark. A bit of creativity in the middle of the park wouldn’t go amiss, but I’m not sure they have it in them. The Algerians made a good job of qualifying, and almost pulled off a shock against Belgium. But I fear they may have peaked with that performance. That said, though, there may be something for them in the game against Russia. If they can concentrate in defence, a point may be gained.
