Tourism leader backs oil drilling J O R G E MARICHAL, President of the Tenerife Hotels’ Association (Ashotel), is all in favour of the proposed oil drilling off the Canary Islands.
He states, firmly, that he does not believe it will cause the loss of “a single tourist”. And, in his opinion, charging a fee to enter the national parks could be far more detrimental to the tourism sector. As head of Tenerife’s leading industry, Marichal (pictured left) speaks from a lofty position, and he admits to not having “a very clear opinion about the drilling because it is a highly politicised matter”. But he did touch on the possible environmental risks. He believes environmental interests must be safeguarded, but he also notes that oil tankers pass the islands daily, “and nobody says anything”. Marichal cited examples in Mexico and California, where surfers continue to prac-
tise alongside rigs. The most important thing, to Marichal is that tourists understand why the exploration is happening, and the benefits it can bring, particularly if profits are reinvested in sustainability. He also drew another parallel with Dubai, one of the world’s most luxurious holiday destinations - and built on oil profits.
“Even now, Dubai knows it will run out of oil, so it is investing in sustainable energy with the profits generated from its oil,” said the Ashotel President. Marichal suggests that, because of the climate, the Canaries could also aspire to Dubai’s greatness if oil is found. But only if profits are reinvested in renewable-energy re-
search and production. Marichal is the first major name, and indeed head of a major organisation to come out in favour of the controversial move. Whilst an anti-drilling movement exists and politicians remain cautious, there is a feeling that more Canarian’s see the long term benefit that oil can bring. Polls show that older residents are more cautious while younger locals are excited about the possible riches for the region. Other topics were also discussed, including the future regulation of renting holiday properties, and the privatisation of the airports’ authority AENA - with which Ashotel strongly disagrees. Marichal also talked about the possibility of a new airline, saying: “I hope to give good news soon.” A new, insular airline could boost tourism and the economy, but Marichal also despaired that Tenerife South airport is in need of a facelift, funding for which has been overlooked by the State. In more positive discussions, Marichal
pointed out that the hospitality sector has been the only one to show growth in the past eight years, adding 7,471 new contracts. He also commented on the importance of speaking several languages in the hospitality sector, and that there is a definite “language deficit” among Canary Islanders. “People who speak two or three languages are usually safe in the workplace, and everyone should be aware of this,” he stressed. Gabriel Wolgeschaffen, Ashotel’s Vice-President of the metropolitan area, reiterated last year’s improved tourism figures. And he attributed much of the winter season’s success to the reopening of the port to more cruise traffic. Robert Konrad, VicePresident for South Tenerife, spoke of the progress made regarding issues such as security. But he bemoaned the lack of funding for improvements to the beaches themselves, saying: “We need to get the golden sand our customers demand.” Meanwhile the Canarian Government’s fourmonth deadline for a
possible referendum on Repsol’s local oil exploration expired on Monday. Its request to the Spanish Government also had the support of the Canary Islands’ Parliament, but has yet received a reply. Paulino Rivero (pictured right), President of the regional government, accused the State of “a serious lack of institutional respect,” particularly in the light of Energy Minister José Manuel Soria’s assertions that a referendum would take place. Rivero, speaking in Las Palmas, insists that the islands will now refer to a 2010 law of citizen participation, in which Article 20 allows for the carrying-out of opinion polls and other queries, independent of the State. Meanwhile, Rivero hopes to continue meeting with several councils, municipalities, political parties and representatives of the public to discuss the issue. The first meetings will take place next week. Gran Canaria-born José Manuel Soria, Minister for Industry, Energy and Tourism, said on Tuesday that all developments at a State level had been carried out according to the law. He even accused Rivero, along with the Lanzarote and Fuerteventura Cabildo Presidents of being “irresponsible” in questioning the decision of the High Court, which has authorised exploratory drilling by Repsol. The High Court ruling was carried by the narrowest of margins, three judges voting in favour and two against. The battle has been taken to the EU, with the emphasis on the environmental impact of oil exploration. The initiative requests that the European Commission rules on an environmental impact report, and to clarify if EU legislation can be applied.

Jury draws guilty verdict on Paedophile Harris ENTERTAINER Rolf Harris was convinced his worldwide popularity and fame would enable him to prey on children and women alike, whenever it took his fancy.
He felt he was untouchable, and he continued the abuse for three decades. But on Monday, at the age of 84, the Australian-born predator, from Bray, Berkshire, was found guilty at London’s Southwark Crown Court of all 12 counts of sexual offences, including four against girls as young as seven and eight. The charges spanned the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties and, though Harris pleaded not guilty to all of them, the jury decided otherwise. Prosecutors early in the trial summed him up as a “Jekyll and Hyde” character who took advantage of his fame. Sentencing will be carried out at the Court today (Friday) and the British-based paedophile can expect up to seven years behind bars. Yet right to the bitter end, Harris continued with his “poor old bloke” image, being helped along outside the court each day by his family. Usually, he made the slow, shuffling walk from his chauffeur-driven car, up the steps to the court building every day. Alwen, his loyal wife of more than 50 years, held one hand and his only daughter, Bindi, the other. But Bindi later admitted it was all for show because she had not actually travelled to court with her father. Every day, she would wait at a coffee shop just around the corner from the court. She would be picked up out of sight of the cameras so she could arrive in the car with her parents. At the end of the day, the same scenario was played out in
reverse. Ironically, Bindi could not go into the courtroom for the first two weeks of the trial as she was to be called as a defence witness. She was not allowed to listen to other testimonies for fear it might contaminate her evidence. When Alwen was not there, the fallen entertainer’s niece, Jenny, filled the void. It was a family show of support for a self-confessed double-adulterer. The prosecution barrister scoffed that this was a “staged” entrance, merely for show, and, in many ways, a charade. Harris had an affair with his housekeeper under his wife’s nose. And, by his own account, he “just had sex with no frills” with his daughter’s childhood friend when she was just 18 or 19. Bindi’s friend was the first complainant to come forward, alleging that Rolf Harris had abused her as a child. In the glass-fronted dock of Court 2, Rolf Harris - singer, artist and all-round entertainer,
the man who painted a commissioned portrait of The Queen - became The Defendant, accompanied by a uniformed court officer only. Harris wore a headset so he could hear the proceedings in a courtroom which features notoriously-bad acoustics. The court heard accounts of abuse given by a succession of women, now in their Forties and Fifties. All but one gave evidence anonymously, with most shielded behind a curtain to put them at ease. Some of the witnesses appeared to be damaged and vulnerable. Others were angry and indignant as they recalled what they said happened when they were young children or teenagers. Much of it was too graphic for the mainstream media to report. The allegations were not simply a case of over-familiarity of the kind said to be have been prevalent in another age. One of those involved was aged just seven or eight at the time.
When it was his turn to testify, The Defendant briefly became Rolf Harris, the celebrity again, gently encouraged with questions from his own barrister. For the benefit of younger jurors, the entertainer explained what a didgeridoo was and how he had created the instrument he called the wobble board for his first British hit record, Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport. To avoid any doubt, Harris made the sounds of both. He even performed a few lines of one of his famous comedy songs, Jake the Peg, about a bloke with an extra leg! But his mood changed dramatically when the claims of sexual assault were put to him. The performance was over. His voice dropped and, at times, he became almost inaudible. He denied indecently assaulting anyone, but his wholesome image disappeared in a flash when he admitted a series of sexual encounters with his daughter’s friend, who was
35 years younger than him. It was, he accepted, not a deep-abiding love affair. It was just sex with no frills, and no conversation when the opportunity arose. And he admitted that when the girl was 13, he had admired her bikini-clad body. The veteran performer, with a 60-year career behind him, agreed that he was “pretty good” at hiding his dark side. But even before the unanimous verdicts were in, his reputation was damaged beyond repair. Now the one-time national treasure is a convicted sex offender, and his fall from grace will be completed today. Although Harris left Australia for England in 1952, he now faces the possibility of further charges being brought Down Under. During the trial, several Australian women came forward, alleging that he had molested them during return visits to his native country.
Two radio presenters are adamant that he groped them following interviews. Verity James, a Perth radio host, says Harris assaulted her following a 2000 interview. The man she calls “The Octopus” pushed her up against a wall, grabbed her buttocks and rubbed her breasts. Another journalist, Jane Marwick, alleges she was groped as she posed for a photograph with Harris after an interview in 2001. One Australian woman Tonya Lee, who waived her right to anonymity, took her story to trial at Southwark. She told the court that Harris had assaulted her on a “dream” trip to London with a youth theatre group in 1986. She said Harris invited her to sit on his knee in a pub then sexually abused her. She says he then attacked her again outside the pub toilets. For older Australians, Harris was a household name and one of the country’s best-known exports. Despite living in the UK, he was a regular face on Australian television for decades. Harris was first questioned in November 2012 during Scotland Yard’s “Operation Yewtree” investigation, set up in the wake of sexual abuse allegations against the late BBC Radio 1 DJ Jimmy Savile. Although his arrest was unconnected to Savile’s dire offending, the publicity surrounding that case prompted the friend of Harris’s daughter to come forward. And as many as 12 possible new victims have come forward to make fresh allegations, say lawyers. In addition, dozens more came forth during the trial - some from Down Under. The Australian, who began his career as an artist, peaked in 2005 when he received his CBE - the same year he painted that portrait of The Queen to mark her 80th birthday.

Tomato industry
in turmoil
Spain’s mass exodus MORE than halfa-million people left Spain in 2013, many of them foreigners, with 79,306 Spanish nationals making up the numbers.
But the Canary Islands actually showed a slight increase in population of 0.46%. Figures from the Migration Study, conducted by the National Statistics Institute (INE), reveal that 547,890 people left the country last year. This means Spain’s population has dropped for the second year running. In 2013, the drop stood at 220,130, closing the year with a total population of just over 46½ million. Of all Spain’s autonomous communities, only the Balearic Islands (+0.47%), Melilla (+0.06%) and the Canaries registered increases. The INE says a big contributing factor is “negative migration”,
which saw 256,849 more people leave than arrive on Spanish territory last year. This represents a rise of 80.2% on 2012, and is the result of a 4.3% decrease in immigration, coupled with a 22.7% increase in emigration. The number of births minus deaths, or “natural increase”, stood at 36,719 - lower than in 2012 - but also contributing to the gradual decline of a population which was at its highest (46,818,216) in 2011. Of those Spanish na-
tionals who departed last year, 52,160 were born in Spain, and the remainder were naturalised citizens. The rest of the migrants were foreigners; their numbers deserting Spain increased by 20.4% over 2012. All nationalities recorded negative net migration - more leaving than arriving. The greatest reductions were Peru (down 23.76%), Colombia (down 22.75%), Bolivia (down 22.22%), Ecuador (down 20.96%) and Argentina (down 15.2%).
THE planting of seedling tomatoes for the 2014-2015 harvest should have started a couple of weeks ago.
But it has been put on hold while a solution is sought relating to the failure of the State and Canary Islands Government to recognise and resolve a multi-million-euro debt, which includes payment to growers. It could sabotage the entire tomato industry if the row is not resolved soon. Gustavo Rodríguez, spokesman for the Platform in Defence of the Tomato, said the planting had been bringing a certain amount of financial relief to families during the summer months, as a way of supplementing low income or depleted benefits. And Rodriguez stressed that if planting did not start soon, the harvest’s quality would be jeopardised. “Issues concerning the biology of the plant, climatic conditions and the seasonal-
5 CW
ity of the market are all important,” he added. “The longer planting is delayed, the further away we stray from the optimal scenario.” The problem, according to Rodríguez, stems from opposing positions adopted by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Canary Islands Government, who appear to be locking horns over who will pay up first. The sector has given a one-week ultimatum to the Administration - deadline Wednesday - by which time they want a specific answer about when the 22.1m-euro debt will be paid. A further 18m euros in compensation is owed by the Public Works Ministry for transport. But the ongoing problems did not stop the Ministry of Agriculture from setting aside a 1m-euro marketing budget to promote Canary Island tomatoes outside the archipelago. Rodríguez says this money bears no relation to the money they are owed, and there will be no tomatoes if the growers are not paid first.

Council saves 1.5m euros in loan interest
Cash-rich Adeje gets cracking on new works ADEJE Council has highlighted an astonishing surplus of nearly eight million euros in its 2013 financial report, thanks mainly to the tourist sector.
That was the good news relayed by Mayor Jose Miguel Rodríguez Fraga to the press in advance of the monthly Council meeting. And that sum won’t be sitting in the bank for long because various projects will soon be under way for the borough’s benefit. The progressive Mayor, along with Finance Councillor Epifanio Díaz Hernández and Gonzalo Delgado Diaz, Councillor for Works and Services, announced their healthy financial climate, and outlined where the money would be spent. The works include the long-awaited Armeñime roundabout and im-
provements to the Los Menores pavements, which, said the Mayor, “will improve the living conditions of our residents and the borough’s infrastructures”. Rodríguez Fraga added: “When the surplus is added to the remaining budget, it gives us an important cushion which we can use for works, and to meet the needs of families in the borough.” The bonanza has also enabled Adeje Council to pay back a loan granted by central government to repay suppliers. It has now repaid it - eight years ahead of the closing date. And, stressed a proud Mayor: “This means, in effect, a saving of 1.5m euros in interest alone. “In summary, we are able to state that the Council and municipal bodies are in a healthy financial state.” The Mayor added: “These excellent results were achieved without any financial pressure
on our residents. In fact, many local taxes have been frozen or reduced.” Work on the new Armeñime roundabout, which will improve traf-
fic connections to El Puertito and Playa Paraíso, will take up to 1m euros, to be financed jointly by the Cabildo and the Council, and
should begin in the coming months. In Los Menores, work will also begin on pavements in the Las Rosas section, at a cost
of 150,000 euros. Both projects, said the Mayor, “are very important for the mobility of our residents and traffic through Adeje”.
Canaries saddled with the most repossessions THE Canary Islands registered a total of 1,456 foreclosures on homes during the first quarter of the year, and 2,656 properties have been affected overall.
Of the total, 80 were on passed down to agricultural land, 70 for other plots, and 1,050 were in urban areas. But not all foreclosures resulted in repossessions. These new statistics were published on Monday by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Of all mortgages taken out in Spain between 2003 and 2013, 25% have been foreclosed. The figure for the Ca-
naries is the highest in Spain (0.4%), followed by Castilla-La Mancha (0.35%), and Extrema-
dura (0.32%). The lowest percentages of foreclosures were registered in the Basque country
(0.05%) and Madrid and La Rioja (0.13% each). Year on year, the num-
ber of foreclosures on primary residences in the first quarter fell by 4.2%, but between the
last quarter of 2013 and the first three months of this year, foreclosures rose by 19.5%. The figures also indicate that 38.5% of foreclosures were carried out on properties which were mortgaged in 2006 to 2007, when prices hit their peak. Expanding slightly, the figures show that 62.6% of properties repossessed were mortgaged between 2005 and 2008. On a national level, Andalucia led the pack with 4,373 foreclosures, followed by Catalonia (3,993) and Valencia (2,726). At the other end of the scale, La Rioja saw the lowest number of foreclosures (37), followed by Navarra (102) and the Basque Country (122).

Costs are halved for EU internet surfing
The editor says...

Sun, fun and Saga Louts IT’S hard to believe that it’s already July. Where has the first half of the year gone?
Today (Friday) is Independence Day in America and now is probably the right time to make a confession. I have American blood. My Father’s father is probably the reason I enjoy watching the NFL, drinking Jack Daniels and worshipping Bruce Springsteen. ‘Grandad’s’ state, Florida, has just missed the first Hurricane of the season, and Arthur is set to hit North Carolina. It’s a very mild Hurricane, if there is such a thing, and a bigger storm could hit us on Thursday night. Five are broadcasting OAP’s Behaving Badly at 9pm and it’s well worth a watch. Filmed here a few months ago, there were fears that it would be another Tenerife hatchet job. But from what I gather, it’s very much about the people and not the place. One of those featured is a pal of mine, who works at Palms Bar in Torviscas. Cheryl Williams is a sprightly 56
and a bit of artistic licence has been used as she is not drawing her pension yet! “The production company came and found me, as somebody mentioned me to them. And they asked me would I be interested. I thought ‘why not!’” she told me. “They wanted it to be funny and show that when people get older, they don’t just go home, watch TV and drink cocoa. Look, life is for living!” ‘Cheryl The Peril’ certainly had fun filming the show. “I am who I am and I was just portraying myself when we were out. I didn’t act any different. Everyone enjoyed themselves and we had a lot of fun.” So what exactly will we be seeing when the show is broadcast? “A lady never reveals! But we did a lot of shooting and there were a few incidents, and that’s all I can say!” Five hope the show, which is a pilot, is a success and there are already plans to make a full series. And who knows, you might even see Cheryl on the sofa with Phil and Holly this week!

SURFING the internet on smartphones while travelling in the EU will cost half as much under new rules.
European leaders have brought in changes over recent years to cut the fees in stages since 2007. And they plan to eliminate them altogether within months. Roaming charges have been a constant nightmare for phone users, who receive a “bill shock” following over-
seas trips. The latest changes are designed to coincide with the holiday season. “This huge drop in data roaming prices will make a big difference to all of us this summer,” said EU telecoms commissioner Neelie Kroes. The changes mean that price caps for data downloads have been cut from 0.45 euros (36p) per megabyte, before VAT, to 20 cents (16p). Fees for calls and text messages will also be reduced with the introduction of the new rules
this week. The cap for making a call falls from 24 cents per minute to 19 cents, and sending a text is down from eight cents to six cents. Also, the cap for receiving calls is down from seven cents a minute to five cents. Stuart Miles, founder of the Pocket Lint website, said consumers should feel the benefit of the changes, although phone companies could alter the structure of some of their deals. He added that many operators already had infrastructure across different European
countries, so these additional charges were questionable. Consumer groups have warned that users must still be on their guard against bill shocks if travelling outside of EU. European politicians want to go further, making the cost of a call or downloading internet data in another EU country the same as it would be at home. In April, the European Parliament voted to scrap roaming fees, but this now requires the approval of all EU governments.
Insure the high-risk dare-devils NEW laws could soon be in place to ensure that people taking part in high-risk activities must be insured.
The General Directorate of Security is pushing for measures to make insurance mandatory. Not only will insurance be mandatory, but companies offering high-risk activities will
be obliged to inform participants of potential risks. The measures were discussed on Tuesday during a meeting of the Regional Commission for Civil Protection, which was linked by video-conference to Gran Canaria and La Palma. The meeting was chaired by department head Juan Manuel Santana. Risky activities, as described under Section 171 of the related law, previously allowed
for costs incurred in rescues through negligence or recklessness to be covered. These activities include diving, swimming, windsurfing, waterskiing, boogieboarding, bungeejumping, quad-biking, mountain-biking, horse-riding, parascending, paragliding, hang-gliding, basejumping and various others. But statistics have shown that of those classified as high-risk,
the most rescue operations have stemmed from paragliding and hiking. The meeting proposed a transitional provision, which will enforce insurance cover for any activities which may lead to emergency situations. Companies offering these activities will have to provide public liability insurance, and also prove that the policies are active before being offering their activities to the public.

Music festival back in tune AFTER a 10-year legal battle, the Las Vistas beach music festival will return at the end of next month.
The event, previously Son Latinos, comes back with a new name, Tenerife Sur de Músicas (TSM), on 30th August. The Official Bulletin of the Canaries (BOC) has published the permit application, and appeals must be submitted within 10 days. Following a complaint from an ecological group, Son Latinos was banned by the Department for Coasts. At the time, it was considered to be one of the largest Latin-music festivals in Europe. Once the event closed officially, the production company, Guagua Productions, disbanded. But a producer, under the company name Tenerife Sur de Músicas, began a legal battle to obtain permits authorising its return. Mandatory environmental reports have been prepared, and Tenerife Sur de Músicas
that the music won’t be restricted to Latin performers only. It will adapt to different age groups and will be free of charge. The whole event is scheduled to begin at 2pm, with the emphasis on family enjoyment. Tenerife Sur de Músicas is believed to have secured the following artistes to relaunch the festival: Youssou N’Dour, Kool and The Gang, Ska-P, Palmera, Ray Castellano, La Isla Roots, Ni un pelo de tonto, The Monos, Salvapantallas, Las Kanarias, David Ascanio, Abraham Mateo and Dj Darío.
has “adopted” the festival. Its officials will ensure that when they receive official authorisation, they will make it public. They will also give detailed information of how the festival will evolve. One major change planned by Tenerife Sur
de Musicals is the programming of environmental events, prior to the 12-hour concert. They hope that environmental groups, biologists and scientists will participate, under the co-ordination of the “Sustainable Santa Cruz” foundation. A second change is
Coming from America? TENERIFE Cabildo is hoping to boost the American tourist market by establishing direct air links between the Island and cities on the US east coast.
Until now, Tenerife has been promoted to American visitors with high-spending capacity, with particular regard to
winter golfing holidays. The glitch has been the necessity for a broken flight, with a connection in Madrid, or other European air hubs. Flying from the east coast to Tenerife with a stop in Madrid means a 14-hour total flight time at least. But a direct flight can reduce that time by half. When booking flights, people are generally guided by flight time, rather than distance, which is what
the Cabildo’s plan will focus on. Currently, a US visitor would expect to pay around 750 euros for a return flight, with each journey taking 14 hours. But the Cabildo is addressing this matter to try to attract more tourists from the States. Imagine offering all the delights of Tenerife in a single six-hour flight. As an example, Iceland is exactly that close to the States, flightwise, and attracts 120,000 visitors
from there annually. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso hopes to create direct routes into Tenerife from New York, Chicago and Boston. He spoke of the “increased connectivity” of the Island with emerging markets, including Russia and Africa. And he sees no reason why the US cannot be added to that list. “We are now working hard to achieve nonstop connections with
Tenerife from the United States and even Canada,” said Alonso. The Island’s President doesn’t only want to establish the links to boost tourism in Tenerife, but also to establish Tenerife as a “hub” for connecting the US to the African continent. To achieve this, Alonso says American tour operators and travel agents must be encouraged to offer the Island as a destination alongside the
most popular destinations, such as the Caribbean. The objective, according to the Cabildo, is to promote Tenerife as a “dream destination” - something unique yet achievable. Alonso is not the first to try to exploit the US market. When Ricardo Melchior was in charge, great links were forged, including a visit by former US President Bill Clinton, who spoke very highly of his time here.

Jobs’ total still falling! THE number of people registered as unemployed in Spain fell by 122,684 in June a drop of 2.6% on May.
It is the second-largest monthly drop since 1996, surpassed only by June 2013 (a drop of 127,248). But the total number of unemployed people still stands at around 4.4 million. Year on year, the drop is 313,979, or 6.59%. Allowing for seasonal adjustment, this was the biggest drop since 2001. Traditionally, June posts a fall in the jobless total, with one ex-
ception in recent years being June 2008, when there was an increase of 36,800. Unemployment fell more among the male population (-3.2%) against the female’s -2.1%. On a national level, 2,117,045 of the jobless total are men, the remaining 2,332,656 are female. The downward trend in unemployment has not been so prolonged since 1999, according to Secretary of Sate for Employment Engracia Hidalgo, who noted that the cumulative drop in unemployment since May 2012 sits at around 19%. All Autonomous regions and sectors posted falls, with the high-
est drops in the services sector (-2.89%) and construction (-3.22%). Unemployment among the under 25s fell by 5.5%, and the number of jobless foreigners also fell by 2.2% since May. This could be explained partially by the recent Frontur study showing that many foreigners are leaving Spain to seek work elsewhere. The highest regional falls were recorded in Catalonia (-22,090), Madrid (-15,435) and Andalucia (-14,712). The number of work contracts also rose in June; 1,518,873 were signed in the month, up 18.9% on the same month last year.
Twitter’s big biz for Stone
BIZ STONE, the man who founded Twitter, has revealed that he rejected a £290m Facebook offer to buy his company - then watched its value soar to billions later on.
He and co-founder Evan Williams travelled to a meeting with Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg several years ago. Neither really wanted to sell the company, so they decided to come up with a number “so big that no one would ever say yes to it”. They came up with $500m (£290) and “laughed so hard at that”.
But despite Zuckerberg saying it was a “big number”, an offer was drawnup later that day. The pair turned it down, saying they felt like they were “just getting started” with the business. Stone added that he did not get on with the Facebook founder. “I like him and I respect him – it’s just that we didn’t click,” he told Sky’s Ian King. “I’m a jokey guy and he’s a very serious guy, so every joke I made … it was a tough crowd.” He also commented on the use of Twitter by extremists in Iraq and beyond, saying he still believed the social network was a tool for good rather than evil. “When you create a
large-scale platform where hundreds of millions of people have freedom of expression, you have to take the good with the bad,” he said. “If you’re going to tout the fact that you’re encouraging free speech, then you can’t curate it. As soon as you do that, you lose the trust.” He also said the growth of Twitter, into a $23bn (£13.5bn), company felt “strange”. Stone added: I’ve come to terms with it, but I wouldn’t call it surprised. It feels strange in a good way to go to the shopping mall and see the little bird I drew. “It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were just a rag-tag group of guys.”

It’s sales time, and traders bank on the big-spenders! THE Sales season began this week, with high hopes that shoppers will continue to empty their pockets for bargains.
Recent sales’ periods have picked up, and traders expect to see a further increase in spending - but not necessarily by the island’s residents. Gustavo Matos, Trade secretary of the Canary Islands’ Government, anticipates that foreign visitors will be more responsible for bumpingup sales figures than the slow exit from the recession.
His opinion is also backed by Abbas Moujir, General Secretary for the Federation for Urban Areas (Fauca). They both offer proof that the best sales’ results are from the predominantly-tourist ar-
eas of the islands. But they are aware that the stores’ Sunday opening in Santa Cruz could also boost domestic spending. The figures may be slow to accelerate because of the sliding dis-
count scale employed by many retail outlets, says Moujir. Shoppers need to balance the availability of the items they want against the size of the discount offered at various points in the sales
season, which lasts until the end of August. According to estimates by the Association of Textile Trade & Accessories (Acotex), around 2,700 million euros will be spent during the summer sales campaign in Spain, which is up 3.5% on 2013. This will continue to enhance the sector’s recovery, perhaps enabling it to close the year in profit for the first time since the recession began in 2008. Acotex President Borja Oria says there is a perceived “turnaround” in the textile trade. Figures up to May are “positive”, and Oria estimates that sales will rise by 3.5% during June
and July. The end of the recession means that retailers, who previously made around 25% of their annual turnover in the sales, may expect to make as much as 40% this year. So what should bargain-hunters be looking for? Products in sale must show their original price, as well as the percentage reduction, and the sale price. And the pre-sale price must have been in effect for a month, prior to being reduced. It means retailers can assure shoppers that they are not sacrificing quality for price by buying in cheaper products, purely for the sales.
Yet another Nobel Prize Winner to Join Starmus Festival!
Canaries will feel the power AN investment of 917.5 million euros has been passed by the Industry Ministry, with provision for windpower production in the Canary Islands. And new power lines between Tenerife and La Gomera will also be installed, as well as between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote Submarine links between the mainland and Ceuta - one of two permanently-inhabited Spanish territories in mainland Africa - and others between islands of both archipelagos are also included. The measures will be introduced to meet the increasing demand for power from both industry and tourism, as well as to reduce system costs through the integration of renewable-
energy sources. Interconnection of island systems is also being tackled to contribute to the completion of the National Hydrological Plan. Provision has been made for the installation of new lines, changes to the power of some existing lines, the expansion of older substations and the creation of new ones. The most significant feature is the lines which will allow the transmission of windpower around the Canaries, and the submarine connection between the mainland and Ceuta. Approval has also been given to install new power lines between Ibiza and Formentera in the Balearic Islands.
Following the news that the world renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking will be speaking at the festival, three more distinguished scientists including Astrophysicist, Cosmologist and Nobel Prize in Physics John Mather, leading physicist John Ellis, Palaeoanthropologist Katerina Harvati and Apollo 7 astronaut Walter Cunningham, will all give talks at Starmus in Tenerife from 22nd to 27th September. The Starmus Festival is open to anybody with a passion for astronomy, science, art and music and celebrates the wonder of the cosmos and the scientific progress being made to understand where we came from and what’s out there. The organisers have also confirmed that due to phenomenal response from Canarian residents the deadline for booking and payment has been extended until 31st July. Further information can be found on the organiser’s website at
www.starmus.com John Cromwell Mather (USA) is an American astrophysicist and cosmologist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2006 for his work on the Cosmic Background Explorer Satellite (COBE) with George Smoot, measuring the cosmic microwave background radiation, showing it came from the early universe, and discovering that it has hot and cold spots that are responsible for the existence of galaxies, stars, planets, and therefore people. This work helped cement the big-bang theory of the universe. Professor John Ellis, is leading physicist of The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) and Clerk Maxwell Professor, Kings College London. His primary research interests focus on the phenomenological aspects of particle physics, but he has also made important contributions to astrophysics, cosmology, and quantum gravity Ellis is a long-
term research leader at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), where high-energy experiments have started and will take physics into a new realm of energy and time. This research also will address the physics analogues of the simple yet profound questions of human existence. Ronnie Walter Cunningham better known as Walt Cunningham was the lunar module pilot for the eleven day Apollo 7 mission in 1968. The first manned test flight of the third generation US spacecraft. Cunningham participated in and executed manoeuvres enabling the crew to perform exercises in transposition and docking and lunar orbit rendezvous with the S-IVB stage of the Saturn IB launch vehicle. Walt will be sharing his adventures in space and the dangers he faced. Katerina Harvati is Professor of Palaeoanthropology at the Institute for Early Prehistory and the Seckenberg Centre for
Human Evolution and Palaeoenvironment at the University of Tübingen. Her work establishing the African origin of all modern humans was named by TIME Magazine as one of the top ten scientific discoveries of 2007. Attendees of the festival, taking place at the Ritz-Carlton, Abama an exclusive five star resort on the south west coast of Tenerife, will have plenty of the chance to mingle and share their views on astronomy and space exploration with the well-known personalities, during the various events taking place during the week. The Festival is supported by the Canary Islands Government through PROMOTUR Turismo de Canarias, the Cabildo of Tenerife, Agencia Canaria de Investigación, Innovación y Sociedad de la Información, the Cabildo of La Palma, International Astronomical Union and Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC). ‘Peddler’ Sarkozy faces court ordeal FORMER French President Nicolas Sarkozy is under formal investigation over his alleged “influencepeddling”.
He appeared before a judge in Paris late on Tuesday after 15 hours of questioning by anticorruption police. Sarkozy was released from custody around midnight after appearing in a Paris court. He had been brought to the court from the judicial police office in Nanterre, west of the French capital, where he had been interrogated. Investigators are attempting to discover whether 59-year-old Sarkozy, President from 2007-2012, had promised a prestigious role in Monaco to, senior prosecutor Gilbert Azibert. They say it was in exchange for information about a probe into alleged illegal campaign funding. The investigation team are looking into claims that Sarkozy was warned that his phone was being bugged as part of the Gaddafi inquiry. Mr Sarkozy’s predecessor, Jacques Chirac, was given a suspended prison sentence in 2011 for embezzlement and breach of trust while he was Paris Mayor, but he was never questioned in custody. It is believed to be the first time a former French head of state has been held in police custody. Sarkozy’s lawyer,
Film in the Canaries and see profits soar! Thierry Herzog, and Azibert were also placed under formal investigation concerning the allegations. When a suspect is placed under formal investigation, he or she is then examined by a judge, who determines whether there is sufficient evidence for the suspect to be charged. It usually, but not always, leads to trial. Influence -peddling can be punished by imprisonment for up to 10 years in prison and a £120,000 (150,000 euros) fine. After Sarkozy’s allies accused the justice system of political bias, Socialist Prime Minister Manuel Valls insisted on Wednesday that the allegations against Mr Sarkozy were serious. He also said the investigation was being carried out independently of the French Government. Eric Decouty, writing in the centre-left daily Liberation, argues that Sarkozy must take responsibility for his ac-
tions if he wishes to return to politics. “Even if the former head of state has never made morality his chief virtue, he cannot scorn certain values essential to our democracy,” he says. Patrice Chabanet suggests in an editorial for regional daily Le Journal de la Haute-Marne that even if Sarkozy emerges blameless from his legal troubles, the cost to his political career may be too great. Lawyer Paul-Albert Iweins, representing Herzog, said the case rested on “phone taps, whose legal basis will be strongly contested”. The inquiry arose out of a separate investigation into whether Sarkozy had received illegal funding for his 2007 election campaign from late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. Sarkozy is hoping to challenge for the presidency again in 2017, but the inquiry is seen as a blow to his hopes of returning to office.
THE Canaries are set to play an increasinglyimportant role in maximising filmmakers’ profits.
Officials are offering a number of economic benefits related to tax incentives for filming in the islands. We are well aware of the fantastic scenery in the archipelago, but not so many will be aware of the draft tax reform, which allows for a 20% deduction on the first million euros for investment in Spanish productions, and 18% in each million thereafter. Despite sounding attractive, though, these incentives are among the lowest in Europe. And it has meant mainland Spain losing eight out of 10 projects where filming was planned in the country. Now, however, the Canary Islands are fighting back, and officials intend to lure more Spanish projects. The Canaries have an average of 3,000 hours of daylight a year, making year-round filming possible. The islands also have an extensive network
dedicated to audio-visual production, as well as a dedicated support and technical services set-up. A film production creates jobs in hospitality, transport, restoration, catering and many other areas. But it’s the tax incentives which will persuade the crews to keep coming back. Tax deduction in the Canaries for audiovisual production is a whopping 38% - almost 20% higher than on the mainland. That is subject to the producer obtaining authorisation for the work, and the investor retaining a fiscal address (official residence) in the Canaries. The certificate can be obtained by registering the production firm with the media company register in the Canary Islands. The production must be Spanish, and the crew must shoot for a minimum of two weeks, using local professionals. Tenerife Film Commission is responsible for providing all the paperwork for national and international projects, yet it granted just 115 permits last year, mainly for Spanish produc-
tions, followed by German films. Promoting the tax incentives will, it hopes, boost the industry. Tenerife is home to the Teide-HPC supercomputer, which can be of great help to film production, particularly regarding animated films. Overall, it is estimated that for every euro of tax initiative granted, 6.90 euros of income for the islands can be generated. José Ramón Barrera, of the ASSAP Tax and Legal Services, says that the islands should not miss out on such huge benefits. Barrera told the press: “It’s a unique opportunity to bring together producers and investors.” He suggests the formation of an Economic Interest Group, which can then be used as a vehicle for investment in audio-visual productions, where the 38% tax credit can be applied. Tenerife is renowned for being used as a backdrop for several notable films, including One Billion Years BC (1966), Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005), Clash of the Titans (2010) and Fast and Furious 6 (2013).

Dangerous dog adoptions will be made much easier ANIMAL protection agency Dogs Welfare Trust, and sponsors Tenerife Office Headmasters and Pinkies, have joined forces with Adeje’s Domestic Animal Refuge.
They have agreed, jointly, to finance the cost of licences for those who wish to adopt those dogs listed under the “dangerous breeds” category. Adeje Municipal Services Councillor Gonzalo Delgado Diaz praised their generosity, saying: “The idea behind this initiative is to give animals which fall under this label the possibility of being adopted, having been abandoned by their original owners. “Until now, dogs from an acknowledged ‘dangerous breed’ have had more difficulty in find-
ing new homes because of the extra bureaucracy and costs involved in adopting them. “We are very grateful to this protection agency for this concrete gesture, which will make that process easier.” Anyone wanting to adopt one of these animals from the Adeje refuge must still fill out the required paperwork and apply for the licence. The protection agency will refund them the costs once these have been approved. Tenerife Office Headmasters and Pinkies formally agreed a covenant with Adeje Council under which, as well as overseeing adoptions it is meeting the costs of sterilisations, microchipping, rabies vaccines, de-fleaing and de-worming and heartworm testing of all dogs adopted from the centre. The Who’s long goodbye tour THE WHO, one of the finest rock bands to emerge from the Sixties, and still performing, are planning to record some new songs ahead of a 50th anniversary UK tour.
The band, whose early hits include Substitute and My Generation, say The Who Hits 50 tour will include songs from across their career. “This is the beginning of the long goodbye,” said singer Roger Daltrey. We can’t go on touring forever. It could be open-ended, but it will have a finality to it. We’ll stop touring before we stop playing because it’s incredibly tough on the body.” Daltrey and guitarist Pete Townshend, the two remaining original members of The Who, revealed the latest tour dates during a launch at Ronnie Scott’s jazz club in London’s Soho, where they played a
short, acoustic set. Daltry, arriving on stage carrying a Union Jack mug, joked that he was adjusting his hearing aid before launching into Substitute, accompanied by Townshend on a 12-string guitar. The Who premiered their innovative rockopera album Tommy at the same tiny venue in
1969. Townshend, who recently gave Daltrey demo recordings of three new songs, said: “Happily he likes them, so we are now considering trying to get into the studio this summer.” He said they planned to record in a “more basic way” than normal, taking inspiration from Daltrey’s recent album
with Wilko Johnson. Townshend added that his song-writing style was “pretty complicated – it’s more prog rock than pub rock”. He also said their UK tour would include “hits, picks, mixes and misses”. He also talked about how their long-term fans were always try-
ing to get them to play songs from their back catalogue. “There’s a slim possibly that we might be able to have a few of those in the mix,” he said. Townshend recalled that for The Who’s 25th anniversary tour in 1989, the band had rehearsed around 100 songs. “We’re not going to
go to that extent this time,” he told the crowd. “But we are hoping there will be a few nice surprises for people who have seen us many times.” It is thought that some new songs will feature on the tour. The band’s last album of new material, in 2006, was Endless Wire. The Who have sold more than 100 million records since their formation 50 years ago. Their best-known albums include My Generation, Tommy and Quadrophenia. The original line-up included drummer Keith Moon, who died from an accidental overdose in 1978, and bassist John Entwistle, who died of a heart attack in 2002. The Who toured the UK last year with a fulllength performance of 1973’s Quadrophenia, which inspired the 1979 film of the same name. The Who Hits 50 UK tour begins at Glasgow SSE Hydro on 30th November and ends The O2 arena in London on 17th December.

Pocket the ideal internet solution from Másmóvil
THIS summer, enjoy Másmóvil’s new Internet Pocket WIFI and save yourself a packet!
It is an excellent rental service if you are visiting Tenerife or the mainland for a few days, or even a couple of weeks, and want 24/7 mobile internet access. You no longer need to
fork out for a Spanish SIM card, or be stuck with expensive roaming charges. The Pocket Wi-Fi is a small router that fits, well, in your pocket! The router is rented for as long as you need it and comes with a Spanish SIM-card enabling 24/7 Internet access with your own mobile, tablet or laptop. The Internet service
is local and extremely affordable, and you can use it anywhere on your trip. You can use the rented Internet as much as you want, and even connect between 5-10 devices for your entire family to enjoy. When the Internet in the Pocket Wi-Fi reaches its limit, it simply stops working and you return it - or rent more Internet.
The obvious question is: “Why is renting an internet access with our pocket wi-fi better than traditional wi-fi and roaming?” Well, with traditional Wi-Fi, you are restricted to a specific area to get an Internet connection, like a hotel lobby. The signal is often poor or unreliable and, with so many people using the same connection, it is often slow.
Roaming Services are expensive, and using your phone abroad can result in high charges - much down to lack of consumer control and no consumption limits. You get the Pocket Wi-Fi at a fixed price, with no extra fees or charges. When you are finished using your chosen amount of Internet, the pocket Wi-Fi simply stops working and you
return it to where you rented it. Másmóvil is all about transparency, without small print, fines or commitment clauses, so you may leave whenever you want! If you are interested in becoming a business partner, or to find out more about the terms and conditions for Pocket WIFI, please visit www.rentaninternetaccess.com

Legal Matters
By Mariano Zunino Siri
THE Editor has received an email with a situation that involves many English people granted Spanish Wills.
I agree with Roscoe (Editor) that it could be interesting to include the matter in this column, so I am reproducing the email and giving my opinion afterwards. Dear Editor. A number of years ago, my husband and I (and most of our friends in Tenerife) made Spanish Wills, following advice given in your paper and from our accountant. We believed this would make things easier for the survivor when one of us died. I heard that: “A Spanish will has the advantage that it can be executed almost immediately, whereas a UK one will, no doubt, exceed the deadline. The reason is that Grant of Probate must be followed in your home country, which takes a long time and is fairly expensive”. I also heard that if you have a Spanish Will, it will not be necessary for your beneficiaries to obtain a Grant of Probate (which would have to be
4th July 2014 - 10th July 2014
Vagaries of Spanish Wills translated and apostillated). A friend of ours, who recently lost her husband, has been told by a Notaria and a Gestoria that, despite having a valid Spanish Will and original death certificate etc, there is no way she can transfer the property to her sole name and pay the Inheritance tax - unless she obtains British Probate validated with an Apostille. She had to return to England to do this and incurred heavy legal costs. Her experience has worried me - and many of our elderly friends. We would be very grateful if you could confirm if this information is correct. It would make it very difficult to complete the legal formalities within the time allowed. No doubt, the answer to this email is a challenge. This is an international private law issue and there are different opinions, all of them valid. In fact, the same situation
regarding Spanish Wills vary with time. In other words, the reader says that some time ago, she read an article which, jointly with her accountant’s advice, made her decide to opt for a Spanish Will. I agree with this advice and also confirm that I consider that to have a Spanish Will is always recommendable. In fact, it is advisable to have a Will (if there is no Spanish Will, at least a Will granted abroad). As she said “a number of years ago”, we have to consider that the legal opinions were not the same as today. In this particular case there is no “black and white”, meaning that 10 years ago most of the notaries in Spain at the time of granting the “Deed of Inheritance” considered that the Spanish Will could be enough to execute it. However, the situation has changed today and most of them consider
that the Grant of Probate is necessary and that the Spanish Will itself is not sufficient. In addition, many notaries, apart from the Probate, request other documents (about those extra documents, I would need another article to discuss it). Spanish Law says the law governing the Inheritance is the national law of the decedent (English law in this case). Thus, Spanish Law reverts to British law (envoy). This means that an English person can grant a Spanish Will (referred to Spanish assets) according to his/her national law (in this case UK law) following Spanish Law formalities. This Spanish Will is considered valid unless in breach of UK law. Many notaries request the Grant of Probate to confirm (or give more security) that the Spanish Will does not contradict a UK’s Will or an English Court decision. Anyhow, if the Spanish Will can be freely granted according to the national law of the Grantor, it is completely feasible that he states that the Spanish Will is going to govern only his/her assets in Spain, irrespective of what is said in other Wills signed abroad. Consequently, any Will granted in England would not affect the Spanish one. Another opinion says that the English Will can revoke the Spanish one previ-
ously granted. In the latter case, how can the inheritors or even the Spanish notary know if this really happens? In Spain, there is a Registry subsidiary of Ministry of Justice, where all Wills are registered. Consequently, it is possible to know in Spain which the Last Will granted before Notary was (if any). But if there is no Central Registry in England, it would be not possible to determine if there is an English Will signed. My opinion (and probably there are many others different also valid) is that the Spanish Will (referred to Spanish assets) granted before Spanish Notary Public could be revoked only by another Spanish Will (see what I explain below regarding re-envoy). Nevertheless, the view of the Notary who grants the Inheritance Deed might be taken into account, and he could require the Probate (as additional English document). But this is not the end of the matter; we know that Spanish Law reverts to English law, but what happens if the English law “reverts” to Spanish Law? This situation is called “re-envoy” and is quite usual in international private law. If English law re-envoy to Spanish law, this would mean that no Probate could be granted in England. At this stage, it would
be necessary to distinguish between “immovables” (real properties) and “movables” left in inheritance and co-ordinate this with the applicable law to the inheritance. This matter exceeds the purposes of this article and could be treated in future issues. In summary, to sign a Will or not is not indispensable but advisable. An “ab-intestato” proceeding (Inheritance with no Will) would be very expensive and long. The English Will can be enforced in Spain but a Spanish Will (with or without English one) would facilitate things. To have a Spanish Will is a question of time and money (among other things, translations and legalisations). Remember that every case should be studied independently, especially taking into account the payment of inheritance taxes which, depending on the cases, could be reduced. In my own experience, although similar, I have not seen two identical English inheritances. That is why this article cannot be considered as general advise but just as legal opinion. To be continued… * Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer registered in Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. Office in Los Cristianos at Edificio Valdes Center Torre “A”, oficina 1, piso 2º. New ISAs enable you to save more ALL tax-free ISAs are now known as New ISAs (NISAs), and the allowable sum for saving or investing has increased to £15,000.
There is also a change from the old rules because you can use these accounts for any combination of cash or shares. But experts warn of low rates of return from some providers. Claims have also been made that banks and building societies may not be ready for the changes, but they have all issued denials. About 23 million adults - roughly half the
UK adult population have an ISA (Individual Savings Account). Treasury figures show that the accounts have been most popular in the South West of England, with 50.9% of the population having an account. Regionally, the smallest proportion was in London, at 42.5%. The size of ISA holdings increased with age, it added. Since 6th April, individuals have been able to put a maximum of £11,880 into the tax-free account during the tax year, of which only half could be in cash. However, from now, the allowance can be held in cash, or stocks
and shares, or any combination of the two. Also for the first time, any money held in stocks and shares’ ISAs - opened during any tax year - can be transferred into a cash NISA, although some providers might not allow partial transfers. “We want to support savers at all stages of their life and make sure they have greater flexibility and choice over how they access their savings,” said Chancellor George Osborne. ISA accounts open since the start of the tax year can be topped up to £15,000, but you won’t be able to open an additional one. Fixed-rate accounts
can also be topped up, although different providers have different time periods when this is permitted Transfers between cash and stocks and shares NISAs can be made as many times as an account-holder wishes. Anyone in the 16-18 age group can hold a cash NISA, but not a stocks and shares NISA. New limits for NISAs in 2015-16 will be announced by the chancellor in the Autumn Statement. Junior ISAs limits have increased to £4,000 each tax year Comparison websites warned that the typical potential returns on offer for savers using tax-free accounts have
worsened since the Chancellor announced the new limits in his Budget. Rachel Springall, spokeswoman for financial information service Moneyfacts, said that since March, the average rate on offer on a one-year fixed-rate ISA had fallen from 1.58% to 1.48%. The typical rate on a variable cash ISA had fallen from 1.26% to 1.21% over the same period. “The falls in rates will likely cause much disappointment for savers who did not see a fruitful ISA season this year,” she said. “They have pinned hopes on the new limits
to provide new deals so they can boost their income.” The British Bankers’ Association (BBA), which represents the major banks, said its members were ready for the change. “The BBA has been holding weekly calls with our members, fund managers, and other providers to prepare for these changes,” said a spokesman. “Staff have received specific training, and banks have put plans in place to make sure they are ready if there is a surge of customers wanting to move from stocks and shares products into cash - or vice versa.”

TO RENT OR BUY? THE WINNERS AND LOSERS By Mike Walsh MARITAL problems and business-related challenges brought me to homelessness in the sense that I am no longer a home-owner. I’m semi-retired, so there is no chance of my buying a home now. Do I feel deprived? Far from it: “With one leap Jack was free.” During Spain’s property boom, when house values could double annually, I put a deposit on an apartment in Murcia. However, because my then relationship broke down. I opted out and licked my wounds. As the saying goes, “Be careful what you wish for”. Had I gone ahead with the purchase, I would now have been more or less an outcast in a back o’ beyond concrete urbanisation near Vera. Ouch! Obliged to meet mortgage repayments on a loan twice that of the apartment’s value today, I would have been the not-so-proud owner of a property I could neither let nor sell. I have since pondered the public obsession with home ownership. Renting is common in mainland Europe. In Berlin, 90% of properties are rented; in Munich 80%. Only in the Saarland and the Rhineland is home purchase more popular. In fact, at 60% it is more or less on level pegging. The Spanish are the keenest to buy and, at the last count, 83% were home-owners. Perhaps this explains why 500 are evicted each week from homes they thought they owned. The figure for Britain is 70%. This could now be less because of the nearimpossibility of getting a mortgage. In France 45% rent and Germany and Switzerland respectively, just 44% and 38% purchase. Obliged to rent since 1999, I consider myself fortunately mobile - and financially better off as a consequence.
For many wonderful years, I rented a palatial, wow-factor annex in a parkland manor, the value of which I could never hope to meet. Think TV sitcom To The Manor Born and you have the picture. Retiring then to Spain, I rented at less than the owner’s mortgage. When circumstances left her little choice but to sell, she palmed half of what she had paid for her property. Lawyers and notaries, the tax system partied. When, later I had opportunity to spend a long summer in Latvia, the Canada of Europe, I simply gave the customary month’s notice. On my return several months later, I rented an apartment in Mijas Pueblo. The views there were out of this world. Sunsets to die for! I dreamed and drooled over the Straits of Gibraltar, the African coasts and mountain ranges. I could afford the rent, but no way could I afford to buy into that property bracket. My wife, because of her mother’s death, is now frustratingly ensnared in the entrails of property bureaucracy. Painfully, she negotiates rightful ownership through a maze of legal and local government departments. Had I fallen off the perch and left my Spanish property to my sons, they would have had good reason to curse the transfer of my “assets”. By renting, I no longer need to bother myself with home maintenance, purchase furniture or mess with bu-
reaucratic paraphernalia. Rent or buy? To me it’s a no-brainer. Meanwhile, if you are in business, the chances are you advertise. Although marketing is multi-optional, most of us realise the importance of advertising in newspapers, radio and television. A tried and tested partnership, the relationship between media and business seems to be unassailable. Cynics point out that advertisers are powerful enough to influence editorial. The US Presidential Commission summed it up perfectly, saying: “Each year, advertisers spend $1,000,000,000 in the belief that television can influence human behaviour. “The television industry enthusiastically agrees with them, but, nonetheless, contends that its programmes of violence do not have any such influence.” Political arm-twisting does work on mainstream media. Not to be confused with independent regional media, it is heavily dependent upon government infrastructure for both its advertising and content. Government can kill, or at least try to, a newspaper simply by withholding advertising or re-directing news content. It works both ways. A newspaper, radio and television owner carries enormous influence and can strike the fear of God into politicians. Never mind the ballot box. A vindictive newspaper proprietor, if he chooses, can undermine and kill the chances of a
politician or a board of directors’ member being re-elected. Regional media normally steer well clear of controversy. Advertisers taking space in independentlyowned regional newspapers are different because all they are seeking is a response to their setting out their stall. Advertising departments, in my opinion, are managed by geniuses. In their studios, mind-reading is an essential on the CV.
So is multi-tasking, empathy, marketing nous, graphics, taking the blame, biting one’s bottom lip, forgoing kudos and much else. It is all too often forgotten that advertisers often let themselves down. Complacent, they do not often change the content of their advert. Many pay little attention to the accuracy of content. Time after time, I have seen invalid email and website links, incomplete or confus-
ing contact details. Help your advertising departments. They are your business partners. They want to see you do well. When advertising, do remember to make it quite clear what you offer, anything that will influence a potential customer’s decision. It is not enough to advertise your business blandly. Give readers a clue why your business should be favoured over rivals. This could be a special offer. If entertainment is on offer, say so and tell them who the entertainers are. It is often forgotten that artistes have their own fans, who follow them wherever they go. They will go to your restaurant or watering hole if you have the nous to put their name in lights, and sex up their performance. Don’t leave it to entertainers to do your job for you. The difference to the till can pay the artiste’s fee and your advertising.

F1: Grand Prix
Sunday 5th July, BBC2, 12:00
Suzi Perry introduces live coverage of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. In 2013, German Nico Rosberg secured the race win after five cars, including that of British teammate Lewis Hamilton, suffered tyre failures. This season the pair’s Mercedes has dominated the field, winning the vast majority of grands prix.
Wimbledon
Ladies’ Final, Saturday 5th July, BBC1, 13.15
Sue Barker presents live coverage from Wimbledon on the penultimate day of the 2014 Championships. The women take centre stage this afternoon at the All England Club. Last year, then-world-number-15 Marion Bartoli lifted the trophy after defeating opponent Sabine Lisicki, who had herself eliminated reigning champion Serena Williams en route to the final.
Men’s Final, Sunday 6th July, BBC1, 13.00
Sue Barker presents live coverage from Wimbledon on the final day of the 2014 Championships. Centre Court hosts the final of the men’s competition – Britain’s Andy Murray is reigning champion, having defeated Novak Djokovic in straight sets a year ago. The Machine Gun And Skye’s Band of Brothers BBC2, 21.30
In the First World War, friends signed up together and served together, shoulder to shoulder. One burst of machine gun fire could hit scores of men from the same village, farm, town or factory. Neil Oliver describes the dreadful human cost of a weapon that could fire a devilish 666 rounds per minute – the Maxim Gun. It had been invented by an American living in London. Yet it was the German army who built them in great numbers and who learned to deploy them with a chilling mathematical precision. In The Machine Gun And Skye’s Band of Brothers - part of the BBC’s ambitious World War One Centenary season - the development of the science of the gun is interwoven with the story of a small company of soldiers that would come to face these horrific weapons. Neil’s journey begins at the rolls of honour in the Scottish National War Memorial in Edinburgh Castle, containing lists of casualties from Scottish regiments, grouped together in clusters of the same places of birth and death. He then follows the stories of soldiers from Skye who went to the Front together as part of the Cameron Highlanders.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Channel 4, 19:10
Director Michael Bay returns with his second instalment of the sci-fi action romp that pits humans against some big, bad alien robots, the Decepticons. In this sequel, which manages to be even louder and more prone to explosions than the initial outing, Sam Witwicky and his girlfriend Mikaela Banes are once more at the centre of the action. Witwicky is being hunted down by the Decepticons, who recognise that he is the main impediment to them gaining control of an awesome source of energy. As the Decepticons’ plan would result in the destruction of the sun, mankind’s fate rests on the shoulders of our oddly named hero...

Common BBC1, 21.00 When seventeen-year-old Johnjo O’Shea gives his friends an impromptu lift to a pizza parlour, he doesn’t expect to find himself charged with murder. Jimmy McGovern’s new 90-minute film for BBC One, Common, is set in the north west of England and based on the UK’s controversial Joint Enterprise Law. Seventeen-year-old Johnjo O’Shea gives his cousin Tony and some mates a last-minute lift in his brother Patrick’s car. They tell him they’re going for pizza, but Johnjo doesn’t know that they’re in fact going to ‘have a word’ with a local loudmouth who needs putting in his place. As Johnjo waits in the car, one of their number, Kieran, takes offence with an innocent bystander Thomas - who is fatally stabbed. The murder victim is the eldest child of Margaret and Tommy, who has become estranged from his family after a bitter divorce. Struggling to make ends meet on her own, Margaret is nevertheless determined to give Thomas the send-off he deserves. When Johnjo’s parents find out about the lift they’re horrified, and concerned for their naive son. As they argue about what he should tell the police, Johnjo makes his own way to the police station and asks for DI Hastings – a career copper used to doing battle with ‘no comment’. Hastings can’t believe his luck as Johnjo lays the blame squarely with Kieran. However, Hastings wants everyone possible to be tried for murder and with the Joint Enterprise doctrine at his disposal, that includes Johnjo. In the battle for justice, Johnjo and his family find that not being present at the murder scene is no defence.

But a plot to kill China’s leader forces MI7 boss Pamela Thornton to recall him in a bid to prevent the assassination. And so the scene is set for a series ofadventures in which English trails confusion and destruction in his wake in his attempt to complete his mission.

Guilty By Association BBC1, 22.35 Alex has been charged with a murder committed by a friend in a spontaneous fight; Wayne has been convicted of possessing a firearm he never touched; Joseph is serving a life sentence for a murder he didn’t even see. All of them have been convicted using the law of Joint Enterprise under which a person in a group or gang can be held responsible for the criminal acts of others. Joint Enterprise is a 300-year-old law which has been increasingly used in recent years to combat the rise in gang violence. Its supporters argue that it ensures that those who encourage violent crimes are held responsible for their actions and that it deters further violence. It has been used to secure convictions in a number of high profile murder cases, including two of the killers of Stephen Lawrence and the three murderers of Ben Kinsella. Others argue that it is leading to wrongful convictions of people who were only on the periphery of a crime, but who will, nevertheless, be sentenced to mandatory life sentences. This documentary follows the story of Alex’s family after his arrest and during his trial for murder at the Old Bailey and also examines the cases of Wayne and Joseph. We speak to defence lawyers, prosecutors and also to the families of victims, including the Kinsellas, who believe that without Joint Enterprise their children’s killers would have walked free. The programme raises questions about how we deal with group violence, what makes a murderer and whether we are locking young people away on life sentences for crimes they did not commit.

For nearly five years, as the city of Glasgow prepares for the Commonwealth Games, BBC One has been following the people of Dalmarnock, the community that will become centre stage during the huge sporting event. As work on new sports venues and infrastructure in the East End gets underway, this new three-part series, narrated by Martin Compston, looks at how the local community copes with the changes and the challenges of regeneration. In the first episode, we meet Darren, a local entrepreneur with three shops, whose family have been residents of Dalmarnock for generations. He is set to benefit from compensation to flatten his shops, and is hoping to use this money to make a better life for his children. Shopgirls: The True Story of Life Behind the Counter BBC2, 21:00
The New Cool. In the final episode of this series uncovering the hidden history of shopgirls, Dr Pamela Cox looks at how shopgirls threw off their staid reputation to become hip in the second half of the 20th century. Pamela begins by discovering heroic stories of shopgirls during the London Blitz and explores how the Second World War gave rise to a new concept, the working mum. By the 1960s, teenagers emulated the beautiful shopgirls working in trendy boutiques like Mary Quant’s Bazaar and Barbara Hulanicki’s Biba, where their jobs were more about modelling the clothes and hanging out rather than giving customers the hard sell. Pamela looks at the 1970s, when the unstoppable growth of chain stores and the introduction of shopping malls signalled the death of many independent shops, and explores visits the supermarket where she worked on the checkouts in the 1980s, and glimpsing into the future, she considers how our shops and shopworkers will adapt to an increasingly online world.

But tactile lovebirds Ciaran and Anita are somewhat taken aback by what they perceive to be a lack of passion in the food and, without being asked, try to reignite their spark for them. Finally, Rob still can’t believe his luck in meeting his Lithuanian wife Egle and feels the need to regularly pinch himself whenever he looks at her.

“The whole persona is this relaxed, calm environment and then the client goes out the door and you turn into a mad hatter.” Audrey from Champneys Champneys, one of the country’s oldest health spas, is put under the microscope in this new ITV documentary as it undergoes a challenging period of change. The famous luxury health spa evokes images of clientele in white cotton robes being massaged and pampered. But below this serene, calm exterior, the cameras capture owner Stephen Purdew and his staff’s efforts to bring Champneys up to scratch as a five star destination in line with competition from other high-end health farms. This one hour programme visits the family run establishment, set in 200 acres of countryside in Tring, as it undergoes a four month refurbishment and Stephen hires new members of staff tasked with improving standards in key areas. Stephen says: “Now the guest is expecting every aspect, not just the spa services and the fitness and treatments and all the other things and classes, they want a great hotel experience.” With shortcomings in both reception and housekeeping, Stephen has had to draft in new staff members to help resolve the ongoing problems: Thomas is employed as the new general manager, Benita as head of reception and Irina as a manager in housekeeping. The new recruits join existing members of staff, such as head waiter Charles, who treats the ladies to a dance and a flirt as he serves up their lunch, and outgoing Audrey who sells the lotions and potions in the shop. Whilst the facials, massages and manicures carry on and guests are polished and exfoliated, new carpets are laid, walls are painted and staff are retrained to adopt a more five star way of working. But, in contrast to the guests relaxing in the treatment rooms, the new managers’ attempts to make improvements prove to be a difficult and at times, stressful, process. Audrey says: “I think we are unique we are not stars, we are unique, we are something special, there is something about us. People love us and hate us and that’s what’s unique about us.” The spa was once frequented by Princess Diana and has belonged to Stephen’s family for many years. He is very proud of the Tring estate’s history and tells the programme how it was once owned by the famous banking dynasty the Rothschilds who employed 54 members of staff for 15 years for a woman who never actually moved in. Stephen says: “It does annoy me when hotels pretend to me, put a few poxy little photographs of a pool angle and a treatment room and put a programme of exercise programmes on or a selection of. And pretend they’re us.” Stephen likes to go above and beyond expectations for his guests, telling the programme how he gifted one VIP guest a painting mounted on the wall after she said she liked it and asked to buy it. “Well she is here for six months with eight suites and I think her bill is about a quarter of million pounds, I thought it would be a nice gesture of mine,” he says. But the key to the Champneys experience, in Stephen’s eyes, is to give every guest the five star experience whether it’s a high ranking member of the Arabic royal family staying for six months or an old couple visiting for a night for a bit of pampering. “I’ve had my eyebrows plucked for the first time in 82 years”, says one male guest. However, the changes are beginning to lead to friction behind the scenes among staff, as Kerrie, the housekeeping manager is not seeing eye-to-eye with new manager Irina. When Irina goes over Kerrie’s head to complain about other members of staff their rift deepens. Irina says: “I respect the person but I can’t look up to my manager because we cannot get to the same… we don’t have the same opinion I think.” The pressure increases further on housekeeping when a mystery shopper gives the spa bad feedback after they are checked into a room full of dirty plates left from a previous guest. The pressure is on for Kerrie and Irina to join forces to improve the housekeeping issues.

Celebrities compete in a contest of culinary skill. After four weeks of intense competition it’s the first of the semi-finals and the best eight cooks remain. The show kicks off with a trip back in time, catering for Shakespeare’s 450th birthday. The teams must design and create four mouth-watering dishes each from a selection of ingredients that would have been available at the time, including mutton, rabbit, pigeon and rainbow trout as well as a selection of fruit and vegetables and herbs and spices. Next it’s back to the MasterChef kitchen where they face the Great British Classic Mystery Box Test and must fight for their place in the competition. Eight mystery boxes contain the ingredients and recipe to make a different British classic, from stargazy pie to the queen of puddings; the celebrities must pick a box at random and then cook the dish that’s inside perfectly.

Making Soundwaves already! IT’S always a pleasure to write about new artistes on the Tenerife circuit, whenever the opportunity arises.
This week, I am focusing on an act which has tapped in to a sound that nobody else is producing. Soundwave are a new, fresh, young musical duo who have formed only recently. Andrew Briggs and Anthony Montibert have been in rehearsals since the beginning of May. And towards the middle of June, they were ready to take the show to the stage. It would probably have taken me a little longer to hear of these guys, had it not been for a friend telling me about a party he attended at
Our Place, in Costa del Silencio, where Soundwave were performing. He told me how well they had gone down with the audience, and how they were a breath of fresh air. My pal has a lot of experience within entertainment circles and really knows his onions. So on the strength of this, and after a little detective work, I booked my first act without even seeing them. Actually, that isn’t strictly true. Half of the duo, Andrew, has been living in Tenerife and working as an acoustic artiste for some time, so I was already aware of his talent and personality. Anthony, however, has been on the island for just a few months and I had no idea what he sounded like, or what
guitar skills he possessed. But I was pretty sure that an artiste of Andrew’s calibre would
not work alongside anybody not up to scratch. This assumption proved to correct. When these
guys turned up to play, they were rigged up and ready within five minutes of arrival. They did this before they got a drink from the bar. That is quite a rarity among entertainers but, nonetheless, very professional. I am a big believer in the phrase, “you get only one chance at a first impression” and these guys instantly made me feel like they were there to graft. They have a simple set-up with two acoustic guitars, two mics and something called a stomp pedal. This is used to create a single beat to accompany the guitars and vocals. It makes it a sound which is totally created by the musicians, making it as live as live can be. They deliver song after song in this style, with
subtle changes to the arrangements, and even throwing down acoustic versions of songs we are used to hearing as huge commercial house hits. Andrew, the front man of the duo, has the perfect personality. With confidence and grace, he will chat to the audience as though they are in his own living-room, which endears them to his likeable persona. Anthony provides harmony to Andrew’s melody and also produces some stunning lead breaks on guitar, which is awesome to watch and hear. Together, Anthony and Andrew are a perfect combination, and I am sure this duo will feature very prominently on the Tenerife entertainment scene over the next few months.
Mark ‘Elvis’ Nixon YOU don’t often find an Elvis Presley impersonator under the age of 40 these days, and most have been entertaining the masses with Elvis songs and tasselled jump-suits for up to two decades. With that in mind, imagine my intrigue when I met Mark Nixon, an Elvis act from the north-east of England who, at 23, is at the very beginning of his entertainment career. He has the enthusiasm associated with some-
one of his age, yet the composure of someone who has been in the business a long time. Put this together with an astonishinglyaccurate voice, the rehearsed moves with the sequinned jump-suit and top-quality backing
tracks which sound like Elvis’ own band, and you’re on to a winner! I have not seen an ‘Elvis’ wow a crowd like this young man - unless it was Elvis himself. He has clearly studied every aspect of the King of rock ’n’ roll.
And to top that, his banter with the audience between songs is so natural. Mark ‘Elvis’ Nixon is a top-class entertainer, even before he dons the Elvis suit, which serves to enhance his Elvis show.
THINGS have all clicked into place in the two bars. The First & Last is doing very well, and compere Vinnie Love and I were chatting about this just the other day.
ment programme, and both bars now feel they have the right formula for the summer. The best comedians, outstanding vocal duos and top tributes and live bands are all booked and ready for a belting time on the Fanabe Beach front. Ye Olde Ocean would like to bid a fond farewell and good luck
It takes a while to fine-tune an entertain-
to one of our most successful acts. Pip Brown, who performed weekly in the bar as Michael Buble, has decided to change direction slightly and take up a residency here, instead of touring his show around the bars and hotels. We all wish you the best, Pip. Both bars’ entertainment programmes differ, but they do not
clash and offer an alternative to karaoke all night by creating dance breaks, with music from chart to cheese. Despite England’s early exit from the World Cup, the bars are still busy for most of the games, and people are staying on after for the shows. So all is well on promenade Fanabe.

Have spuds had their chips? BRITS are turning their backs on spuds in favour of today’s rice dishes and fajitas. New figures show that sales of fresh potatoes slumped by more than 8% during the past year as shoppers opted for alternatives. It is a worrying trend for the Potato Council,
which represents growers and has warned that spuds are facing a “fight for relevance”. That’s because shoppers are switching to other staples, or buy smaller retail packs and smaller salad potatoes. The anxious Spud Council urges retailers to fight back with reci-
pes and in-store promotions, which emphasise cooked meals rather than the raw ingredient. The Potato Council’s Caroline Evans, head of marketing and corporate affairs, told the Grocer magazine: “It’s good that people are not actively rejecting the category.
“People still like potatoes, but the challenge is that we need different approaches for the whole supply chain. “Shoppers need distractions and better signposting. A lot of shoppers make an emotional connection when they see a potato in its prepared form, rather than as a raw vegetable.” But she believes the growing popularity of curry and fajitas - and the national drive to reduce food waste - are also factors in the declining sales of fresh potatoes. Total annual potato sales are worth £2.3bn a year, excluding crisps and snacks, with fresh potatoes accounting for £1.4bn. The retail potato market is dominated by supermarkets, with the top five accounting for more than 77% of sales. But fresh, organic potatoes have fared particularly badly, following
last year’s recovery. Sales have declined again and, in the last quarter, they reached one of the lowest volumes recorded since 2010. Jean Anthelm BrillatSavarion, the 18th century lawyer and politician, who gained fame as an epicure and gastronome, called the potato “tasteless”, and “nothing but a protection against famine”: Yet potatoes are a symbol of everything that is wonderful about cooking: a simple ingredient with great potential to enhance a meal. The baked spud, for instance, needs just a dollop of butter to provide a filling meal on its own. Add cheese and other ingredients and you have a feast. And most of us love a plate of home-made chips, with or without salt, and lashings of sauce, tomato or brown Or a plate of mashed
potatoes, gravy and whatever meat you choose. And what about our tasty Canarian spuds? They are absolutely delicious, as are the new potatoes from Jersey, which are first to arrive in the UK each year. But the best of all must be the ones you grow yourself. There really isn’t anything sweeter than putting your fork in and pulling out those wonderful little white spuds. And you don’t even need a garden. A large pot will give you an ample return, and they are so easy to grow. Have spuds had their chips? With the newspapers and TV all aflutter with sensible diets to cut down obesity in children and adults alike, it’s hardly surprising that potatoes popularity is on the wane. Posh rice might be nice, but there will always be spud lovers, fat or thin!

By Val Sainsbury GETTING a good night’s sleep could be the key to beating dementia, according to experts.
They say a lack of rest overnight as you get older can have a dramatic impact on your memory and ability to carry out everyday tasks. Researchers at Warwick University found sleeping for a full eight hours a night could have a marked effect on brain function. Professor Francesco Cappuccio, from the university’s medical school, said: “Sleep is important for good health and mental wellbeing. “Optimising sleep at an older age may help to delay the decline in brain function seen with

Sleep off dementia worries
age, or, indeed, may slow or prevent the rapid decline that leads to dementia.” The team analysed data from 3,968 men and 4,821 women. In adults aged 50-64, short sleep duration of six hours a night or under was associated with lower brain function scores. Sleeping too long could also impair brain function, the team found. Older adults aged 65-89, who had lower scores, were found to be long sleepers who got more than eight hours a night. The research, published in the PLOS ONE journal, showed that in pre-retirement age, the sleep quality of adults did not have any significant association with brain function scores. But in the over-65s, there was a significant
relationship between sleep quality and brain function. Dr Michelle Miller, who led the study, said: “Six to eight hours of sleep
per night is particularly important for optimum brain function. “These results are consistent with our previous research, which
showed that this period was optimal for physical health, including lowest risk of developing obesity, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.” She added that nonpharmacological intervention to help people get a better night’s sleep could provide an alternative, low-cost way for the NHS to cut dementia rates. But Dr Laura Phipps, of Alzheimer’s Research UK, sounded a note of caution. “Though many of us will have felt the effects of a bad night’s sleep on our memory, this study did not look at dementia,” she said. “And it’s too soon to conclude that poor sleep will lead to the condition. “Further research to better understand the links between sleep
quality and our risk of dementia is needed before we can know whether improving our sleep quality could prevent the condition.” There is a general belief that the amount of sleep we need decreases with age, but older people still need at least 7½-8 hours. Because older adults tend to have trouble sleeping this long at night, daytime naps can help fill the gap. Research published last year found getting plenty of sleep could help protect against Alzheimer’s disease by allowing the brain time to flush out toxic proteins. And earlier this month, scientists in New York also suggested a lack of sleep could increase the risk of Alzheimer’s.
Just skimming over the obesity problem in kids NEW health guidelines suggesting children over two years of age should drink low-fat milk only at childcare centres in a bid to tackle obesity has been ridiculed by nutritional experts.
Australia’s National Health and Medical Research Council, the country’s peak funding body for medical research, recommended that young children should drink milk with mostly reduced fat instead of full cream, which has 4% fat compared with 2% of lighter options. But some nutritionists believe pushing lowfat milk options could
be counter-productive and say regular milk is not the problem when it comes to childhood obesity. Dr Kieron Rooney, from the Sydney University School of Health Sciences, told the Daily Telegraph that evidence of skimmed milk being a healthier option was non-existent. “What ends up happening is you take whole milk, which is a good food and nutritious, and encourage children to drink the low-fat version, said Dr Rooney. “And then parents say the kids won’t drink plain low-fat milk, so they end up drinking flavoured low-fat milk,” The Healthy Eating for Children guidelines suggest children should “enjoy reduced-fat varieties of milk, yoghurt and cheese (once they are two years or older)”. Sydney’s Happy Little Campers’ childcare centre rolled out the health guidelines this week for fear of losing its ac-
creditation. “We have a quality-control accreditation system,” said director Rebecca Volmershausen. “And for us to achieve a high-quality rating, we have to follow the authority guidelines - and that’s one of the recommendations.” The National Health and Medical Research Council issued a statement on Monday to “dispel any confusion”
regarding milk recommendations for children over two. “NHMRC aims to help people make informed choices about their diet, but does not make recommendations about low-fat diets, or the consumption of specific low-fat products,” it read. “The guidelines inform people that choosing full-fat dairy products

Is it Ta Ta to topless?
MIDDLE OF THE ROAD?
By Ruth Benson
By Carl from Robot
IT seems that yet another line of swimwear has hit the headlines, and this week it’s the turn of the “Ta Ta Top”.
THERE’S simply no way around it … middle partings rarely suit anyone, and they are another of my pet hates.
This is a bikini top, designed by Chicagobased feminists Robyn Graves and Michelle Lytle. The Ta Ta Top is a flesh-coloured bikini with nipples, giving the perception of being topless. As you can see from the pictures, they certainly look real enough! The top comes in three colours: nude, medium and a dark-colour skin tone. And for each bikini sold, a donation is made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Part of the reasoning behind the design, according to the designers, is “to desexualise the nipple”. They add: “The only excitement from seeing breasts is that you are conditioned to think they are something special; something to be protected and kept hidden.” Their website says: “Why can’t girls be topless? If you really think about it, what’s the difference between a man’s nipples and a woman’s?” “It’s great to create a product that makes people laugh, but it’s even better to be able to do something very serious with that success.” In a previous article, I mentioned Instagram and Scout Willis and her
#freethenipple campaign - and the bikini has been part-inspired by this. At first glance, you can see how realistic it is, but if you are going to wear a bikini with nipples on, why not just go topless anyway? The Huffington Post acknowledges the popularity of the Ta Ta Top, not just because of the Free the Nipple campaign but because lots of America states do not allow topless women. Therefore, this is saying: “Look at me. I am showing my nipples without actually doing so.” Here in Tenerife, it is not frowned upon to see topless women on the beach or around the pool, so the top to me seems pointless and actually draws more attention. However, I can see
why it could be popular in the US because, first of all, it’s raising money for a great cause. And, as the designers say, “You look topless, but you are not, so you are not breaking any laws.” The Ta Ta Top wants to encourage young women in particular not to feel so ashamed of their bodies that they have to cover up. But as we do not have the problem of covering up here, I can’t see it taking off. And if we do feel that comfortable, ladies, we should just go natural anyway.

Unless you are amazingly stunning looking, parting your hair centrally will do you no favours at all. Dividing your face in half simply elongates it and shows off any of your facial flaws, and we all have them! Eyes are rarely the same height, and neither are your ears. And if your nose isn’t central, creating this severe line will serve only to draw attention to this. Look at yourself in the mirror and see how uneven we humans are. Cutting hair is all about enhancing what you have, and detracting from what isn’t good to the eye. The same as we dress to compliment ourselves, we also look for this in choosing a style for our hair, don’t we? Take my example of superstar Cameron Diaz. She’s a really good-looking lady, but look at the difference between her side-swept fringe and her centre parting. I believe we can agree that she looks so much better with a softer front. Adding extra length to a forehead works only if you have a small one to start with. Even those with an av-
e rage forehead look better with something soft around their faces. Even worse is to part your hair centrally when it is shoulder length or longer. This just drags the face down even more, making you look tired. Instead, go for a side or even off-centre parting, which will also give you more lift as well. A full fringe has a real eye-opening effect. Okay, it has a small parting behind it, but it doesn’t give you that line directed towards
your face like a full middle parting does. Those of you who visit me in the salon know that taking a middle parting isn’t a good look if you colour your hair. Your roots will show so much faster than if you were to sweep your hair across, making your colour last that bit longer. I’m not saying there aren’t a few of you out there who do suit this look. But in general, its no-no for most women. Who on earth wants to look harsh? As we age, it’s all about keeping your face looking timeless - nothing that will cause severity or harshness. Keep thing soft and you will see for yourself that asymmetric is better than geometric when it comes to partings.

Just what did we do without our mobiles?
I SOMETIMES wonder exactly what we did with ourselves when we were children.
With no TV and no computers, we had to find things to do that did not involve sitting in front of a screen. And with no phones, let alone mobiles, our methods of communication were severely limited. I, together with many of my pals, had pen friends. Mine were from many far-flung parts of the globe: from the West Indies, Joyce, with Gunnar and Faisal from Iceland and India respectively. I always think that is why I love travelling so much, and although I never actually got to meet any of them, I did visit their countries. Today’s young people seem to have trouble actually putting pen to paper at any time, let alone actually writing letters. But gosh, their fingers can do the talking, certainly on their electronic devices. I defy anyone to match the excitement we felt, though, when the postman delivered the exciting, exotic-looking letters with the stamps. Some recent research has found that youngsters who use Facebook do worse in exams. Facebook rituals, including building an empire of friends, adding appli-
cations, joining groups and “poking” other users, can limit hours of study time greatly, with some users spending as little as an hour a week on academic work. A study by the National Literacy Trust recently showed that one in five youngsters aged seven to 15 had never read books outside of school websites and blogs because they are becoming reading matter of choice. And many say that social networking sites, blogs, websites and magazines usually rank higher with them than books do. Some children have been allowed to turn their bedrooms into multi-media “hubs” with televisions, computers, games consoles, MP3 players and mobile phones all within easy reach.
Is it that they find parents cannot say No to their children? On one hand, there is growing concern about internet security, and on the other, a breed of parents who will give their children anything for a quiet life. I have heard it said that some parents give their young children the latest in gadgets to keep their minds off the fact that they, as parents, are not around that often. However, a survey of British parents found that many of them considered electronic gadgets to have a bad impact on family life, saying that they would like to spend more time outdoors doing activities as a family. But they met with so much opposition from their children that they just gave in.
Surely, it’s all about control? Who exactly is in charge in the home? Increasing numbers of very young children can use tablet computers and smartphones. Yet they are unable to play with building blocks or socialise with others. And teachers talk of older pupils who are tired out in the classroom after spending most of the night playing computer games. They say that many children have brilliant computer skills but often, these are outweighed by their deteriorating skills in putting pen to paper, or spelling because they rely on the instant support of the computer and its spellchecks. A recent study by the University of California states that one in seven young adults has a memory problem.
Timo star shines the brightest TIMO who lives at Accion del Sol, was the proudest pooch in the refuge on Saturday when he won an award at Koala Sur’s Las Chafiras Dog Show.
His prize was a shiny plaque, which hang on his kennel wall, and a supply of dog food for him to share with his Accion pals. On another happy note, we are staging our
fun-filled summer fund raising event on Sunday, from 2pm. And children, please don’t forget your swimwear and a towel because there will be an assortment of swimming pools and water events, as well as fun dog-agility tests. So all your dogs are welcome to join in the fun, or you can “borrow” one from the refuge. There will also be Flamenco dancers, Zumba, and lots more to ensure an action-packed afternoon. You will also get a
chance to view this fivestar refuge and see some of the 200 dogs all looking for loving homes. We are always looking for volunteers to walk the dogs in the beautiful surrounding areas of the refuge. If you would like to be involved, please contact the sanctuary, or visit at the appointed opening hours and make a dog or two really happy. Please call 922 778 630 for more information, or if you would like to help out in any way. Towels and blankets
are always needed for the dogs and would be very much appreciated by staff and animals alike. The refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological park ITER, where the windmills are. We are open to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 2-5pm and on Saturdays between 1-4pm. We are closed on Wednesdays, Sundays and on public holidays.
The Shadow Education Minister in the UK said a while ago that youngsters “Should be taught attentiveness” in schools in a bid to improve communication skills and better prepare them for the world of work. Is this not a sort of stable-door mentality? Writing is something that should be hometaught from an early age. When I was quite young, in addition to the pen-friends my sister and I had - usually obtained from columns in magazines, such as School Friend, we were also expected to write letters to relatives, particularly thank-you letters after birthdays or Christmas. What is it with young people today? I have sent wedding presents and received no thankyou cards. It does not
seem to be important any more. We did receive a thankyou text from one young couple after we’d sent a donation to the quite expensive honeymoon fund. That in itself is a modern concept, and obviously indicative of the fact that many young people have lived together for some years, having bought all the household goods they need. I wonder where it is all going to end. Modern etiquette guide Debrett conducted a poll asking if people thought manners had been wrecked by phones, laptops, tablets and social media. The majority of people questioned thought that social skills are worse today than ever; that the internet has ruined face-to-face contact with friends or family and that they have become increasingly rude because of the mobile phone. Well, I cannot argue with that. If you have ever waited to be served in a shop until the assistants have finished their phone conversations, you’ll know what I mean. Surely, this all stems from good and caring parenting, the ability to say No to a child, and then being able to hand over discipline to the child’s teacher. But that’s easier said than done in schools today.

Lions chief Norman hands over the reinS T E N E R I F E Sur Lions Club held its 29th President’s Night Gala Dinner on Saturday.
Club members and their guests gathered on the terrace of the prestigious Hotel Paradise Park for pre-dinner drinks and canapés, prior to the formal duties and speeches. Ken Sadler, presiding MC, introduced out-going President, Norman Goodall MBE, to present the club’s annual awards. Norman made a number of “President’s Appreciation” awards to members and others who had assisted in various ways to keep the club moving forward from strength to strength. He also presented special awards to the Lions Volunteers who help run
the charity shops. Without their help and support, he said, the club could not have achieved the success it had seen in its many projects, particularly the holidays for disadvantaged children. Norman then formally handed over the Presidency to incoming President Mike Marshall, who thanked everyone for attending the evening - and in particular his son Peter, who had arrived from the UK especially for the occasion. Mike spoke of being keenly aware of the history and heritage of service Tenerife Sur Lions Club had built over the years. It was, he said, a history that has seen tremendous achievements and undertakings laying the solid foundation it enjoys today. He added: “I am, therefore, conscious
of my responsibility as President to continue to preserve that foundation, and that is very much my intention. “So, to a large extent, it will be business as usual for the club’s core activities, the shops, the helpline, the scholarship award programme, the ‘recycle for sight’ initiative and, of course, the holidays for disadvantaged children. “Inevitably, changes occur over time, and I am also aware that we need to ensure we use our energies and resources in the best and most effect ways possible.” The new President added: “Over the last six months we have made great strides in doing just that, and have achieved a number of refinements to some of our activities and administration making them more efficient,
productive and costeffective. “I want to continue that process and use it as a catalyst for innovation into new ways to support and aid the many needy situations and projects that we find within the local community.” With the presentations over, the assembled company moved into the dining area to “Welcome In” the President, his Lady, Margaret Marshall, before the Gala Dinner service began. Following the Grace and the Loyal Toasts to His Majesty, King Felipe
VI of Spain, and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Gala Dinner began. It was an excellent five-course meal reflecting the hotel’s dining excellence which was appreciated by everyone. During the meal the new President had the honour of presenting Lions member Edna Goodall with the highest accolade of the Lion’s International Organisation, the prestigious “Melvin Jones Award” for her long and active service with the Tenerife Isla Sur Lions
Club. Complementing the evening, there was music, dancing and entertainment with three fine cabaret acts, which soon had everyone dancing the night away. A big thank-you goes to all who worked so hard behind the scenes to make the evening such a success. In particular, Beryl Sadler, who designed and arranged the table decorations, seating plan and memento brochure, not forgetting the staff and management of the Paradise Park hotel.
President Val steps out in style! SAN MIGUEL Lion’s Club’s new President, Val, wowed members and guests on Saturday with a superb display of Spanish ballet.
The President’s Night was held at the Oasis Restaurant in Costa del Silencio, where Val took over from President Nan. And, as usual, it proved an outstanding success. There was also a surprise for Val when she was presented with a giant birthday cake, tto celebrate another milestone. Diners were entertained royally by two
Spanish dancing acts - Val partnering one of the men. And there was more to come with the “badging up” of a new member, Carole, by mom Nan and District Governor Luis. Club Secretary Ralph Solomon said: “On behalf of the Lions, I
would like to thank everyone who supported Val and our Club. “And thanks must also go to Rita and Oliver for the excellent food and service. “We look forward to another successful Lions’ year, so look out for our fund-raising events.”

Garden
4th July 2014 - 10th July 2014
By Margaret Tully
MIDSUMMER, or San Juan as they call it here (after St John the Baptist), is over and it should be a time in the garden where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the fruits of your labour.
Think again! I find I am very busy now because the crops need lots of attention as the days become hotter, the pests and diseases are rampant - and there doesn’t seem to be enough cool hours. While on one of my walks with the dog and hubby, I came across the brightly-coloured flowers of the Hypericum canariense, which is a St John´s Wort. It is so opportune that this plant has signalled the time of the year nature’s indicators at work again! It is a shrub with glossy, thick, green leaves and lovely, bright-yellow flowers, with hairy beards or pin-cushionlike stamens projecting from the centre. In Spanish they call the plant Malfurada, and it is picked at Midsummer and used in the posies they often hang on their doors around this time. They have actually been researching the possible health benefits of this plant at Tenerife’s University of La
45 CW
Midsummer’s sunny delight
Laguna. And the team’s findings have revealed that this particular Hypericum is an analgesic and a topical anti-inflammatory - fascinating, I thought. Hypericum perforatum, which is the wellknown Common St. John’s Wort, has been used for hundreds of years as an anti-depressant, and you can buy as a tincture or tablets in any herbalist shop. It has been proven to have particular properties but, visually, it is so bright and sunny that it
would cheer you up the minute you saw it. It is relatively easy to grow, given the right kind of conditions: a good sunny spot, sheltered and free-draining soil, and little water. But it does not like salt spray, so it is not at all good near the coast. At this time of year, the sun is always around us. And there is no better plant to bring the sun into your garden than the Sunflower (Helianthus annus), this being the common annual sunflower.
There is a myth that a sunflower follows the path of the sun because, in reality, it doesn’t. Its mature flower-head simply fixes itself in the best place for the sun. Like the St John’s Wort, it likes to be in a sunny position, but it also likes to be in rich, well-drained soil and needs regular watering. It is a fantastic source of seeds for us and the birds. After the seedheads dry out, you can also save some of the seeds for planting next year.
They are so easy to cultivate, which is why they are often the first seeds children grow. Results are achieved quickly and they literally grow before your very eyes! If your sunflowers are of a tall variety, then make sure they are growing in an extremely well-sheltered position, and stake them if necessary. The cultivated sunflower grows straight up on one branch, with a flower at the top. But the wilder varieties tend to appear
bush-like and have several branches, with bunches of flower heads - and they never grow that tall. Always plant your sunflowers where plenty of people will see them. They are sociable creatures and enjoy the limelight. Make a fuss of them by watering them occasionally with cold tea - and maybe a little whisky! You can give them a few drops of Bach flower essence to pep them up after a rough patch (maybe a calima or the recent San Juan fires). Start your seeds off in a small pot of seeding compost and transplant once there are two true leaves. Re-pot into a much larger one and use richer compost, mixed with grit. Then, if necessary, move to an even bigger pot. But do this only if absolutely essential because they don’t like to be moved once they are starting to thicken up, and definitely not when they are flowering. If you buy a flowering sunflower from the garden centre, transplant it into its final position with as little root disturbance as possible, and pamper it big-style! Hope you enjoy bringing the sun into your garden space … and get a chance to sit back and relax.
SOW IT… GROW IT… TASTE IT! MY cabbage planted last season is ready to be harvested and I felt this was an ideal recipe this week, using sunflower seeds as well! Ingredients *1 small
cabbage
Roasted sunflower seed salad shredded, or half a commercial one (they are usually huge) *½ red onion, chopped *1 large tomato, chopped *¼ cup roasted sunflower seeds (no husks) *2oz block of feta cheese, crumbled
For the dressing *3 tbsp sunflower oil *1½ tbsp of apple cider vinegar *2 tbsp honey *1 tbsp mustard paste Method *Dry-fry sunflower seeds after removing the husks - no salt, no oil
*Set aside to cool *Combine all the salad ingredients, then add seeds *Finally, combine all dressing ingredients and pour over salad Serve as a side-dish with fish or prawns, maybe just cooked on the barbecue.

Nothing spikey about Cactus
CITROEN are reverting to the company’s more traditional values: great design, smart technology, comfort and superbly-low running costs.
And the new C4 Cactus is the first of their new breed. This fnnky crossover - an alternative to a Nissan Juke or Renault Captur has been designed to fit into real-world lifestyles. You know, where you need lots of places to store bits and pieces, where touch-screens are second nature, and where people always seem to open their doors into your paintwork. The eye-opening Cactus is built to take these little trials in its stride, with a radical re-think. Hence, those curious, distinctive - coloured panels along the sides. These “AirBump” air-filled blocks are scratch-resistant and a bit bouncy, so that wayward supermarket shoppers and their runaway trolleys cannot leave a mark. The same material is on the boot and in a few other places, too, helping to avoid any ugly and expensive bodywork damage. The Cactus is the first truly genuine, upfront Citroen for years. It’s a bit madcap - and why not in this day and age? - but not so much so as to be off-putting. It sits slightly higher than the everyday
hatch, as its styling suggests, but it has no off-road ability, no dynamic thrust or sporty handling. But the controls are where you’d expect them, the pedals do what they should and the wheels aren’t made of cheese. Basically, it’s very good at the daily norm, and a lot of people will almost certainly be sold on that. Okay, you don’t get as much outright space as you do in, say, a Seat Toledo, but the Cactus has a far greater character to go with its healthy dollop of practicality. There are plenty of door pockets, and a panoramic glass roof to give a more spacious-
feeling cabin. And there’s enough rear legroom for adults but only just! A classy little touch is the “suitcase-style” interior detailing on the door pulls and glove box. It gives that sense of travel adventure, but there’s loads of room inside the glovecase to add substance to the style. Citroen openly admits the Cactus is built to a price, from £13,000£18,000, which reveals genuinely realistic costs. And with that in mind, it’s incredible how quietly the 1.2-litre 110-horsepower petrol version nips around town. At 30mph in the fourth of five gears, the loudest thing is the airconditioning fan, which
itself is just lightly breathing away in the background. There’s nothing remarkable about the way it drives. The soft, chunky seats are unusual these days, and most comfortable. The steering is quite slow and unthreatening, and the ride is really smooth over good surfaces and undulating bumps. Yes, it’s a bit worse over sharp bumps, where the suspension crashes unexpectedly. But overall, the driving experience is that of a car you’d never regret buying or dislike owning. In fact, it will quickly feel as though you have acquired a new family pet! In terms of raw space,
there’s more for your money out there in the market. But “value” cars tend to be a bit soulless, which always counts against them. But the Cactus definitely has more of a character and a charm that cannot entirely be priced up. In terms of providing family-friendly transport you’re not afraid to see bumped around now and again, what could be better? There could be clever finance deals on the cards, too, if the UK follows suit with Spain’s “pay as you drive”, mileage-based finance scheme. It’s excellent news that this won’t just appeal to budget-led buyers who hate looking
after their cars. This is a super, everyday car with some great quirks and an unusual look. Couples looking for something livelierlooking to put on the drive will love it, and so will people bored with the same old hatchback crowd. It has a five-speed manual gearbox, frontwheel drive and a top speed of 117mph, and will hit 0-62mph in just 9.3 seconds. It is unconventional and it dares to be different - well, Citroen’s designers do - to say the least, which makes it so attractive. True, it will raise a few eyebrows, but this is a real head-turner and will lead to huge smiles as it sails past.
Ferrari star auctioned for £10.7m A 1954 Formula 1 Ferrari 375-Plus sold for a mindboggling £10.7m at Bonham’s colourful Goodwood Festival of Speed.
It was by far and away the star lot of the Festival’s annual auction,
which found new owners for cars with a combined value of £22.6m. The Ferrari 375-Plus has a distinguished racing pedigree: it won at Silverstone in 1954 with Argentine José Froilán González at the wheel, and also competed that year in the Mille Miglia as well as winning the Le Mans 24-hour race.
It was the subject of interest from two eager bidders, the hammer finally falling at the £10.7m sale price. Also selling for large sums at the Goodwood sale were a stately 1902 De Dietrich, which went for £998,300 and a modern classic Lamborghini Countach LP400 “Periscopio” Coupe, the
hammer going down at £953,500. Other stunning cars included ranged from a Volkswagen Golf G60 Rallye to an AustinHealey 3000 Mk1. And there was a 1937 Jaguar 2.5-litre Roadster, once owned by none other the late funnyman Norman Wisdom.

By Roscoe LAST weekend, a story broke which excited CDT fans a story that made them dream the dream all football fans crave: a rich owner!
As is often the case with dreams, they can quickly turn into nightmares, or, in this case, reality. At a press conference on Monday, former Tenerife player César Gomez, working on behalf of an investment group, outlined his plans to buy the club. During the presser, he revealed that talks between his group and Tenerife part-owners Miguel Concepción and Corviniano Clavijo has gone well, and that a deal was progressing. Gomez said his investors were prepared to spend 30 million euros. The money was to pay off the club’s crippling debt, and to acquire the controlling shares which Concepción currently held. This, he claimed, was 40%, It was at this point that everything started to unravel. It was also clear by Monday evening that Concepcion is not exactly rubbing his hands at the thought of this deal happening. He spoke with the press and said, rather spikey: “It’s completely false that I own or con-

failed to buy Mallorca on a number of occasions. The first time was in the summer of 201, when, he promised to invest 30 million euros to gain control and pay off debts. Sounds familiar, huh? Wierig is a head of a company based in Germany, with branches in Switzerland. They own and run a variety of different companies, including StadiaNet Sport, a firm which
trol 40% of the total share capital, directly or indirectly.” In fact, according to official records, Concepción holds just 19,031 shares, representing 10.84% of the company. The Tenerife President also hinted that the sum of money being proposed was, as us English might say, a little pie in the sky. He also wanted to
clarify some of the reasons why he dismissed the offer for the club. It seems that a first meeting went okay. But during a second meeting, which was more formal, they agreed that all correspondence would be done via the lawyers. Concepcion claims that talks were being held behind his back, briefings given to thirdparties and requests for
proof of funds dodged. There was also the mystery of who the real money-man was. The identity of the secretive “investor” was not made known to the club and, understandably, Concepcion was unhappy not knowing with whom he was dealing. We now understand it to be German entrepreneur Stefan Wierig, who has tried and
constructs sports facilities. According to Mallorcan newspapers, the deal broke down on a number of occasions because of financing problems. It seems Wierig was unwilling, or unable, to submit bank guarantees to cover the 30 million euros. His unwillingness to set foot on the island also rubbed up locals the wrong way. Eventually, Real Mallorca’s owners simply asked Wierig to show proof of his financial solvency. The German said that because of the Greek crisis, banks were putting too many obstacles in the way. This send alarm bells ringing at Mallorca, and the owners simply walked away from discussions. It seems that the German is eyeing another crack at owning a club and Concepcion, with the best interests of CDT at heart, is not playing ball.

blew very hard at La Caña Lancers last Friday. So much so that they came away with all eight points and now have a comfortable lead at the top of the table. The Playboys lost ground, despite a 5-3 win over Trap Door, and Emerald Lounge welcomed new boys Clouseaus to the league by beating them 6-2.
Now, I am not saying that Division One side Gaffers A are full of hot air, but they certainly

The Shamrocks put seven into Sundowners, while Naughty Nautas and Picasso’s both took the trebles leg to tie their respective matches. The lead at the top of Division 2 changed hands after the Playgirls were washed away at the Waterfall. And Chipeque Chippers dropped two points to Amistad 2, Paddy securing his second maxi-
mum. The Palms are still cruising along nicely in third after hitting the Spear-chuckers for six, and Dale hit the highest check-out in this section with a cool 90. Elsewhere, Palms Sports Bar managed just two points at Barracuda Hunters, while Marilyns were 5-3 winners against The Bar. The Premier League
match of the day, and probably performance, came at Phoenix Bar as they entertained Bar 180 A. The San Blas outfit, with boss man Richard in irresistible form, restricted the home team to just two singles points. There were maximums from Richard and from Phoenix’s London. In fact, all three Bar 180 teams tasted vic-
tory. The B string beat Inkspots and the D team, with a 180 from Rob, put in a fine effort to take the win at Vikings Ensecan. Target Titans travelled just down the road to local rivals Gaffers B, where they got their juicee out and claimed a 5-3 win, while The Pub recorded the same winning margin at home to La Caña Pirates.

Silverstone’s British Grand Prix
Hamilton guns for victory LEWIS HAMILTON returns to Silverstone this weekend, absolutely desperate to claim a second victory there - and his first home victory for six years.
He took pole position there in his 2007 rookie season, and won there in the rain in 2008. But he lost last year while heading for victory when a rear tyre exploded, and that really hurt the 29-year-old Brit. The driver who took advantage of his bad luck was Mercedes team-mate Nico Ros-
berg, with whom he is battling for this year’s World Championship crown. Even Rosberg would admit that he is riding his luck, Hamilton having clawed back the 25-point deficit conceded when he retired in the opening race. Now, though, Hamilton’s great motivation is to complete a second recovery with a win in front of home fans. “I’m definitely gunning for Silverstone,” he said before practice this week. “Last year I was more hopeful than ever since my win in 2008. But it was gutting to not win - not to bring it home for the country and for the fans.
“But we have another chance on Sunday, and I’ll be doing absolutely everything to make sure we’re in front.” In fairness, Hamilton recovered from last place to fourth after a brilliant recovery drive, and it gave him so much heart. “I felt like I had won,” he recalled. “When I
have races like that, I still feel like I’ve triumphed. In my mind, I’ve gone away thinking I’ve won.” Winning! It’s the only thing that will be crossing his mind in qualifying - and the real thing on Sunday - as he and Rosberg bid to continue their takeover dominance from
Red Bull’s glorious years. Meanwhile, with Jenson Button out of contract at the end of the season, he has been warned by McLaren boss Ron Dennis that he must “try harder”. Dennis appreciates the cars driven by exworld champ Button and team-mate Kevin Magnussen are far from winners. But he believes that the veteran, 34, should be leaving rookie Magnussen in his wake. Just 14 points separate the duo in the drivers’ standings, and Dennis admitted: “I’m happy with the drivers in the sense that I think they are giving their best. “I’m sure Kevin is giv-
ing a big wake-up call to Jenson. In some ways you say, ‘Great, we’ve made a great choice with Kevin’. “But in other ways you say, ‘Come on Jenson, you are a world champion and absolutely one thing you can do on a consistent basis - and you should be doing it is beat your team-mate’. “Do I want him to try harder? Of course I do. He’s a highly-paid Grand Prix driver. “Yes, we are not giving him the best car; yes, it would be challenging for him to win in this car, to say the least. “But he could do his bit, and Kevin has to make it as difficult for him as possible.”

Hammers and Treehouse Triumph!
FINALS night in the Direct Telecom Pool League took place on Tuesday at the Terrace Bar on Amarilla Golf.
The battle was for two trophies: the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup and the Tenerife Pool Tables Plate. The Tenerife Pool Tables Cup featured First Division Champions Tenerife Hammers A and Inn The Pink B, who were the Second Division runners-up, in what some saw as a real David v Goliath contest. The Hammers were looking to seal a historic double and they knew The Pink boys needed a good start to settle the nerves. The Cup has not been kind to the Hammers over the years, but Jambo gave them a winning start. Paul was a little lucky to make it 2-0 and, though Pink
pulled one back, a fine clearance from Fritzel gave them a 3-1 lead. This set the tone as Hammers A controlled the contest, even though Pink B had their chances. A couple of crucial missed pots and some strange shot choices cost Pink as Hammers quickly took the next two frames to make it 5-1. The match was as good as over when Barry made it 6-2 before the curry and rice break. Paul was left with the honours of taking the ninth frame and made no mistake. All hail the double winners! On table two, Treehouse A faced-off against Inn The Pink A for the Tenerife Pool Tables Plate. The team from the Patch had finished above Treehouse in the league, but cup games can be different animals. Nerves can kick in and it can then make for an interesting game. And this was certainly the case as Jay, Mark
and Steve gave Treehouse A a shock 3-0 lead. John steadied the ship for Inn The Pink by taking the fourth frame, and they then rallied to win the next group of games 3-1, leaving the scores level at 4-4. The last four games began with Greg winning his first of the night, followed up by a win for Mark, making it 6-4 to Treehouse. John, who was Pink’s best player with three wins, pulled the score back to 6-5 to give
team-mate Ricky a chance to tie the match and force a play-off. Ricky lined up against Steve, who hasn’t had the best of seasons, formwise. The encounter was cagey as was to be expected with so much riding on it. Ricky missed a couple of shots which are normally bread-and-butter for him, and Steve held his nerve and saw the frame out, taking the black to cheers from his team-mates. It was the frame Treehouse A needed - and
they celebrated long into the night. This Tuesday, it’s the end-of-season singles tournament. Underdogs
By Adi Benson I BELIEVE I called it the “Greatest Show on Earth” in one of my previous World Cup articles, and I’m not sure anybody would disagree.
A lot was written prior to the tournament about how a European team had never won the cup in South America, and how the conditions would suit the home nations. But for me, this World Cup has surely got to be about the rise of the underdogs. Certain teams have performed above and beyond the levels expected of them prior to the start, and can hold their heads high. The question is: how have they done it? I believe it all hinges on teamwork because, if you look at the performances, they have progressed because of hard work and a genuine team ethic. They haven’t needed a superstar to carry the team; they have rolled up their sleeves and fought for each other and the team. And that has reaped the rewards. Those teams with superstar players have struggled and have not yet given a really good account of themselves. In the build-up to the competition, I reviewed each group and predicted who I thought would progress to the final 16. I know my predictions can be mainly off the mark, but looking at each group it seemed fairly clear who would progress. Yes, there are normally a couple of upsets. But this time around, the applecart was well and truly tipped over. Who really would have gone with the likes of Costa Rica, USA, Algeria or Greece to progress? And then you look at the teams who went out. Spain and their ageing squad. England, had no real expectations, Italy looked good on paper,
stealing the show
Portugal’s one-man team and Russia, normally so efficient. They all had faults, but we anticipated that they would at least qualify from the groups. But it wasn’t to be and, for me, this has enriched the tournament. I did well with my last16 predictions, getting seven out of eight correct, and just missing out with Chile. I honestly thought they would shock Brazil - and they very nearly did! If that last penalty had been a few inches to the left, they might have gone on to take the game, but that’s a shoot-out for you. One or two teams looked out of their depth in this round and under-performed. I’m looking at you Uruguay, Switzerland and Nigeria. But Chile, Algeria, Mexico, Greece, and especially the USA, can go home with heads held high. We now move on to the quarter-final stage and I can only see the tournament getting better and better. One statistic to note though: nine of the last 10 World Cup teams to advance after playing
extra-time in the last 16 have lost their next game. So should Brazil, Germany and Costa Rica, Argentina or Belgium be worried? Brazil v Columbia Brazil are not firing on all cylinders and haven’t yet peaked, but I am not sure there is so much more to come from them, even though they still appear to be suspect at the back. Chile caused them problems with pace and movement, and they can expect the same from Columbia. Neymar has played well, but he picked up a knock in his last game. Hopefully, it is not too serious because Fred and Hulk haven’t put in a performance between them. Columbia have had a good tournament so far and brushed aside Uruguay easily in their last game. It also looks as though we have seen the tournament’s Golden Boy in James Rodriguez. He is in outstanding form and that goal against Uruguay will surely not be bettered? Rodriguez, I feel, is going to get a lot of joy against Silva and Luiz.
And if his finishing is as sharp as it has been, Brazil could be in real trouble. Prediction: Columbia France v Germany The French seem to have slipped under everybody’s radar and have been going about their business quietly. They have been scoring goals across the team, and that bodes well as they are not reliant on just one or two players. In the last few competitions, they have been disjointed as a team and at odds with each other. But they appear to have put this behind them and they look united. They have built from the back and have a good keeper and defence. In midfield, Valbuena has been excellent, and beside him Paul Pogba has caused problems. He is one kid who has a bright future. Throw in Giroud and Benzema up front and France have a real chance of progressing. Germany started with an excellent win against Portugal but have looked ordinary since then. On paper, they have all the quality in the world, but too
many players are underperforming. They are coming up against a formidable French side who are playing with confidence, and if Germany continue to play the way they have been, they could end up on the end of a real drubbing. Algeria gave them a real scare, but it comes to something when your best defender in that game was goalkeeper Neuer. Mind you, that brings back memories of German goalkeeper Schumacher from Spain 82 and that infamous match. If this game is half as exciting, it will be some tie. Prediction: France (aet) Holland v Costa Rica Apart from the opening win against Spain, the Dutch have looked fairly ordinary. What goes in their favour in this game is that they have faced two teams similar in style to Costa Rica, and they beat both Chile and Mexico with late goals. Van Persie returned for the game against the Mexicans after serving a suspension for two yellow cards, but he looked off the pace of the game and I’m struggling to remember a chance he had. So it will be left to Robben again to create the spark the Dutch need. But after admitting a dive, he could find himself receiving little sympathy from the referee - and that could prove costly to the team. The Costa Ricans really are in World Cup dreamland. They were expected to finish bottom of Group D, but wins against Uruguay and Italy, followed by a draw against England, saw them top the group. Rumour has it that their hotel reservation didn’t run beyond the group stages! They are an example of what can be achieved when a group of average players perform as a team. They have showed no fear in any of their games and always
believed they could progress. It wasn’t their best performance against the Greeks but they got the job done, and you will not see five better penalties scored in a shoot-out. Prediction: Holland Argentina v Belgium The Argies treated us to one of the most boring games of the World Cup Finals so far in their last-16 clash with Switzerland. And it is no stretch of the imagination to say that if it hadn’t been for Messi’s goals in the group stages, they could well be out of the competition. Four games in and I expected them to be playing well now, but they don’t appear to be able to get going. On paper, they have a strong squad with some talented individual players. But Messi apart, and even he has been quiet by his normal standards, the team are under-performing. The defence don’t look comfortable, the midfield look slow and disjointed, and they have not really been scoring goals. They now need to up their game because Messi won’t win the trophy on his own. In contrast, the Belgians produced one of the best games so far in their last-16 clash with the USA. It was proper end-to-end stuff and the match could have gone either way. But the youthfulness of the Belgium squad triumphed in the end and take up a deserved quarter-final place. I tipped this team to be a dark horse, and they are proving me right so far. The only criticism is that they are a young team, and experience certainly helps in a tournament like this. They will be drained after going to extratime, but will feel they can give Argentina a game. They are a fairly decent defensive unit - and if they can keep Messi quiet, they could well pull off a shock. Prediction: Belgium
