New airport terrorist alert will cause chaos HOLIDAYMAKERS coming to Tenerife will need to be patient this summer after new security checks were introduced to airports.

A new terrorist threat has resulted in passengers being given spotchecks involving electrical equipment. If your mobile phone, laptop, ipad, ebook or even your electric toothbrush appears “dead”, you will not be allowed to board your plane. All flights are being targeted, with an extra emphasis on long haul flights to America. Airport authorities say Customs officers can swoop on passengers queuing for any flight, going anywhere in the world. The extraordinary move comes after an apparent terror threat of an airliner being blown up, which prompted the US to announce extra security checks last week. American security officials fear bomb-makers from the Yemen-based al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) have worked out how to turn mobiles into explosive devices which can avoid detection. And US authorities have already singled out Apple iPhones and Samsung Galaxy handsets for extra security checks. The security checks began at some UK airports promptly for flights to the US, and these have now been extended. The British Govern-

ment says checks will be carried out on flights to and from the UK, but has not specified which ones. The Department for Transport (DfT) has now issued updated guidelines, saying: “In line with the US advice, passengers on some routes into and out of the UK may now also be required to show that electronic devices in their hand luggage are charged up before they travel, or face not being allowed to bring the device on to the aircraft.” The DfT said that “for obvious reasons”, it would not elaborate on the routes affected. “We

will work with the aviation industry to minimise disruption as far as possible,” said a spokesman. It will be possible to recharge electronic equipment at airports - there are 4,500 charging points at Heathrow alone. But time is the key factor because if you are stopped with “dead” equipment as you go through Customs, there’s a good chance your flight will be taking off fairly soon. That means you dump the gear, take a later flight (paying for the switch, obviously) or leave it with the airport’s officials for collection after your trip.

Prime Minister David Cameron’s official spokesman said the tightening of security measures at airports reflected “the fact that there are terror organisations that seek to do UK citizens, the UK and citizens of other countries harm”. American officials last week ordered some overseas airports with direct flights to the US to intensify screening of electronic devices. This prompted Heathrow and Manchester airports on Monday to advise US-bound passengers to make sure their electronic devices carried in hand luggage were charged before travelling. British Airways said customers with uncharged devices would not be allowed to fly, and would have to rebook their flights - or else leave their device behind and board the flight without them. These passengers, said a BA spokesperson, will either be able to collect the device on their return, or have it forwarded to an address, at the airline’s expense. Virgin Atlantic said it would also store un-

charged devices for customers at the airport. But after initially saying the cost of returning devices rested with passengers, the airline later revised its decision and said passengers would not have to pay. Meanwhile, easyJet said it was seeking clarification from the Government on the new regulations and had not, so far, issued any specific instructions to passengers. Matt Bowdidge, who was flying home to Brisbane, Australia, had his gadgets and wires strewn across a table as he finished his coffee before heading for security. “I don’t want to have to surrender my stuff just because it doesn’t switch on,” he said. “So I want to make sure it’s all fully charged. “But it’s no big deal. No one likes a lot of hassle when they travel, but I would rather turn on my phone and laptop for security than be blown up in the sky.” And that appears to be the general feeling among travellers. Emily Healy, on her way to Malaysia to meet a friend on holiday, said she was happy to comply with the new measures as

long as she heard nothing about “the B word”. In a written Parliamentary statement, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said the country faced “a constantly evolving threat from terrorism”. He added that there was no change to the UK terror threat level, which was “substantial”. Analysts have suggested that the action could be a response to efforts by Islamic militants in Syria and Yemen to build bombs which evade airport security checks. Other devices in the Customs’ firing line are electrical shavers, travel irons, hairdryers, hair straighteners, cameras or any other camera equipment. The US authorities are also concerned that hard-to-detect bombs could be built into shoes, or other items of clothing. It all adds up to more misery for holiday-makers this summer because the extra checks will almost certainly lead to even longer queues and delays, especially during the forthcoming holiday season.

Government

spur for jobless THE Spanish Government has regulated the National Youth Guarantee System, and the new incentives to encourage the hiring of workers.

Also, fees charged for card payment transactions have been lowered, as has the selfemployed taxation. In addition, support has also been given to financing economic activity and the competitiveness of infrastructure and transport. The Government’s Council of Ministers this week approved a Royal Decree-Law on urgent measures for growth, competitiveness and efficiency, aimed at fostering the efficient operation of markets, improvements in financing and employability. Vice-President Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría said: “A second round of reforms has begun with the goal of consolidating economic growth, guaranteeing job creation and transferring the effects of the recovery to the people.” The aim, she added, was to maintain the positive trend in the unemployment figures - something that has continued with the figures released this week - and further improve confidence among private institutions at both national and EU levels. De Santamaría stressed that the definitive push was given for the Plan of Measures for Growth, Competitiveness and Efficiency, which was launched on 6th June to consolidate the economic recovery in the second half of this year. The Royal DecreeLaw approved last Friday implements practically all of the meas-

ures contained in the plan. Besides the Royal Decree-Law on urgent measures for growth, competitiveness and efficiency, the Government also approved a Draft Law on regulating venture capital companies, and other collective investment entities for submission to Parliament. This is to promote the role played by venture capital as a way of providing finance to companies. Furthermore, new legal status was given to SME venture capital companies. They will be governed by a more flexible regime, enabling them to invest in debt, rather than just in capital, said the Vice-President. A programme of guarantees has also been launched by the ICO [Official Credit Institute] in favour of multi-lateral organisations and international financial institutions to facilitate access by Spanish companies and credit entities to the services they offer.

The Vice-President also said local authorities will be allowed to refinance the suppliers’ fund in order to improve the financial conditions of their debt if they meet certain requirements. “We are providing town councils, local authorities and regional governments with the tools they need,” she said. The Government has approved a reduction in the fees charged by banks to businesses when their customers pay for their purchases by card, setting a limit of 0.3% for credit cards and 0.2% for debit cards. De Santamaría said: “It expressly prohibits the increase of card transaction fees aimed at passing on costs to the purchaser.” She also said that administrative procedures have been simplified for opening, transferring and expanding commercial establishments. And the number of major tourist zones has been increased, which means they will be able to extend their opening times.

The Vice-President stressed that withholdings tax for the self-employed is lowered to 15% when their untaxed earnings are below 15,000 euros, and when that income represents more than 75% of all their untaxed earnings for economic activity and work. Also, property deeds in lieu of payment and mortgage repossessions will be tax-free. De Santamaría added that it will be possible to offset losses deriving from preferred shares against other profits that may have been made. “Unlimited compensation will be allowed on the savings base between negative income derived from subordinated debt or preferred shares and other positive income from this base.” The Government of Spain is also setting a rate of 0.03% in the fiscal treatment of bank deposits. The Government has also implemented the National Youth Guarantee System, for those over 16 and under 25 who are not in em-

ployment or education to receive an offer of employment, education, apprenticeship or work placement. Fátima Báñez, Minister for Employment and Social Security, said the new 2014-2020 financial framework for the EU Structural Investment Funds has been taken into consideration in the development of the National Youth Guarantee System, allocating 1.89 billion euros to Spain. She also said that 845,000 young Spaniards will benefit from this measure. The new Youth Guarantee Website, set to be launched next week, will provide a meeting point between young people, the public administration services, companies and all those entities taking part in managing the system. It will provide young people with comprehensive information on the Entrepreneurship and Youth Employment Strategy, and the Youth Guarantee itself. The Government has

also agreed new incentives to encourage the hiring of workers. The minister said that a tax break of up to 300 euros over six months has been established for the permanent employment of those people benefiting from the Youth Guarantee, which “will be compatible with any other permanent employment incentives already in place”. This incentive will remain in force until 30th June 2016. On the issue of airports, Transport Minister Ana Pastor this week announced that the so-called Airport Regulation Document (DORA) states that airport fees may not be increased until 2025. “They have been frozen,” said the minister. “This means that airports will be more competitive. We are going to foster mobility, tourism.” Pastor also said that the use of drones is regulated and the use of elements - lights or lasers - which could pose a threat to the security of aviation operations, is also regulated. Also, the maximum period for port concessions is extended from 35 to 50 years, and a Financial Fund for land-sea accessibility is created to finance the road and railway infrastructure that connects with ports, as well as improve the freight transport networks. The minister highlighted the importance of these reforms because more than 10% of Spanish GDP is linked to the aviation sector, while another highly-significant portion is linked to ports and railway transport. “These measures will truly revitalise the transport sector and will make us much more competitive,” she stressed.

Pamplona bulls charge on IT is one of the biggest annual events in Spain and draws worldwide visitors in their tens of thousands, despite the danger for spectators and competitors alike.

Yes, the Pamplona Bull Run is with us again at the San Fermin festival. And already, with just a few days gone, there have been casualties. Dozens of people are injured each year in the eight-day, 8am runs along an 850-metre course, from a holding pen to Pamplona’s bull ring. Most are hurt in falls but, tragically, 15 people

have died from gorings since record-keeping began in 1924. This time around, one person was gored during Monday’s opening run of the street-partying festival. And three people were injured, one seriously, as thousands of daredevils raced alongside six fighting bulls during Tuesday’s second running. Happily, no one was gored, but a 23-year-old man from Nottingham was in a serious condition with chest injuries and rib fractures sustained during the frenzied dash through the narrow, winding streets of this northern city. A Japanese man and a Spaniard were also treated in hospital for

light injuries. The event was immortalised in Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 novel The Sun Also Rises and still attracts masses of thrill-seeking revellers from around the world many simply watching and others taking part in the eightday spree. In the novel, Hemingway introduced Americans to el encierro, the Running of the Bulls, but participation is not for the faint-hearted. While safety measures are taken and emergency medical crews

No relief for longterm unemployed JOBLESS Canarians are suffering most in the ongoing recession, with half of them spending over two years looking for work.

A new analysis from Randstad shows that the Spanish region has the highest number of long-term unemployed. Some 46% have spent more than two years on the dole with Andalusia (45.2%) and Asturias (43.9 %) completing the top three. While this is a yearon-year increase, it has slowed slightly, and those out of work in

La Rioja, the Balearic Islands, Aragon and Valencia are having it hardest. Those regions saw a sharp increase in those who have not worked for more than two years. Worryingly, the number of Canarian searching for work has increased tenfold between 2008 and 2014. In 2008, there were 16,300, a total which has increased to 163,700 this year. It’s a similar story on a national level, where figures have risen from 243,000 to 2,419,000 in the same period. One of the aspects which deems these unfortunate people unemployable is their lack of training and education.

The Randstad reports highlights that the higher the educational level, the less time people spend looking for a job. The report also found that over 50% of the long-term unemployed had taken no college courses, or had no working qualifications. In addition, the group most affected by longterm unemployment is the over-45s, with more than 40% of the total made up from this age bracket. The under-30s, meanwhile, have seen even more unemployment over two years. In 2008, 6% were in this position, and that percentage has increased to over 30% in 2014.

are always nearby, the Bull Run - deaths apart - sees 200-300 people injured, some quite seriously, each year. Another slant on the Pamplona spectacle was taken by writer/director Jason Farrell in his 2012 film documentary Running With Bull. The Sky News journalist explores both the passion and the controversies surrounding the Bull Run, which attracts more and more attention each year from animal rights activists. They protest in increasingly large numbers over the time-honoured tradition of the afternoon bullfight. It follows each day’s run and the animals are ritually slaughtered by matadors in Pamplona’s large stadium, jam-

packed with 20,000-plus cheering fans. But while protesters swell their ranks by the year, thousands of participants still show up for the annual Pamplona Bull Run. And still the voices supporting the event remain far louder than those who oppose it. The San Fermin Festival has its roots in the 14th century, and, by 1591, it was firmly planted as a July festival to take advantage of Pamplona’s festivalfriendly weather during the month. While it has experienced many changes over the years, the festival still stitches together into the event the city’s cultural heritage, and its commitment to family and religious tra-

ditions - a celebration of life and shared history. But though the San Fermin Festival is wildly popular in Spain, the Pamplona Bull Run has captured the hearts and imaginations of the entire world - largely through Hemingway romanticising both the festival and the Bull Run. True, there are similar events around the world featuring bulls, even in the United States. But none has ever captured the heart and soul of people like this one. While those who take part have an ambition to finish the event unscathed, this may be one of the few sporting events where the journey is of far greater importance than the destination.

Adeje’s brilliant Blue Flag haul ADEJE has picked up three Blue Flags as a measure of its high-quality beaches - more than any other borough this year.

The award went to Troya I and II beach, El Duque and the beach at Fañabe. And last Thursday, Adeje Mayor Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga led the group of people responsible for the accolades in hoisting the flags. The Major was accompanied byAdeje Tourism Councillor Rafael Dolado Garcia, rep-

resentatives from the Department of Beach Safety and Protection and the local tourist police force, together with those who hold concessions for the beaches Rodríguez Fraga said: “The European Blue Flag is a symbol of quality tourist destinations, which are awarded to those beaches that meet a number of criteria - quality of the water, environment and educational material, environmental development of the zone, lifeguard services, etc. “From the council’s point of view, we are firmly behind the work undertaken to main-

tain these standards of excellence as it is an integral part of the area’s attraction. “The Adeje borough is very much linked to quality. An example of that quality is the Troya I and II beach, which has received a total of 18 blue flags over the years, and tourists can identify with this.” He added: “It is an excellent day to hoist the flag because we have also just received news that the Constitutional Court has lifted the suspension of the Canarian Tourist Law, which was preventing certain investments here. “Once we have all the info, we will announce

details of new hotels and other investments in Adeje, which will only serve to enrich the attractiveness of the destination even more.” Other boroughs in the South to win the coveted Blue Flag were El Médano and La Jaquita in Granadilla, Playa La Arena, Los Guíos, and Los Gigantes sports harbour, in Santiago del Teide. The Blue Flag is recognised internationally and is seen as promoting local tourism. The Flags are awarded annually in more 40 country clubs, spread over four continents, including the United States.

Budget cuts fuel fire safety threat IT’S that time of the year when everyone has to be extra vigilant to help prevent the outbreak of fire.

Tenerife is again on alert for forest fires after another dry spell, and those in charge of the Canary Islands’ Na-

tional Parks are warning people to be extra careful this summer. In 2011, the islands’ fire-fighting budget was reduced by 25%, and the lack of funds is causing concern as we enter the hottest period of the year. All the islands in the Archipelago have seen their budgets slashed. And here in Tenerife, fire-fighters have to get

by on 1.4 million euros less than in 2010. The Agrarian Transformation SA (Tragsa), the entity which manages the fire service and fire prevention in the national parks, says the situation in the parks is “delicate”. For example, in Garajonay, La Gomera, the number of staff there has been cut from 12 to

nine. A similar situation exists in Teide National Park, where Budget cuts means there are 18 fewer workers than in 2010. There are now just six four-man teams, including 16 drivers, which is nearly half the staff from five years ago. The summer working roster runs from 15th June until 15th October and, thankfully,

there have been no major incidents. But there have been some fierce fires over the last decade, as many will remember, and there is a genuine fear that today’s staffing levels are dangerously low. Elsewhere, the National Park Caldera, on La Palma, has its “summer” campaign running from 1st July until 30th

September 30, and it is also down 25% on the staffing front. This year has so far been cooler than previous years and there have been no announcements of any concerns in the parks. But it remains to be seen how the staffing levels will affect the islands when - not if - the fires do come.

Tomato

The editor says...

THE Canarian Government has stepped into the recent row over funding for tomato producers in a move that will kick-start the industry.

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

The moaning season begins WE’VE reached the time of the year when the moaners are in full swing. You know the type.

Moaner: “I thought it was summer, where is everybody?” Me: “Have you been to Safari Centre or the beach or tried to get a hotel room or book a plane? They are here, believe me.” Moaner: “How much for a drink in town? I’m not paying that - it’s only a euro a pint in my local.” Me: “Best stay there then. How do you think the nice surroundings, entertainment and like is paid for? By the Money Fairy?” And then my favourite. Moaner: “It’s too hot!” This always reminds me of the classic Fawlty Towers sketch when the old women is looking out of the bedroom window: Mrs. Richards: “When I pay for a view, I expect something more interesting than that.” Basil Fawlty: “Well, that is Torquay, ma’am. Mrs. Richards: “Well, it’s not good enough.” Basil Fawlty: Well,

may I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeasts swinging majestically...” Mrs. Richards: Don’t be silly. I expect to be able to see the sea.” Basil Fawlty: “You CAN see the sea. It’s over there, between the land and the sky.” It’s Tenerife in July, it’s meant to be hot. Someone who never moans is my old friend Ray, owner of the legendary Stage Door in the Patch. I’ve known Ray for over two decades and he is one of the good guys. One of my earliest memories of Ray was when he led out my football team back in the early Nineties. He wasn’t the manager before you ask, he was the Piper! He was fully-kittedout, kilt and all, and he was excellent. Fifty odd years of Woodbines have ended that hobby, but he is in fine form. Last week, he celebrated his 70th birthday and, for me, he looks better than ever. Keep smiling mate!

It has guaranteed a five-million-euro grant, which will allow the growers to get planting underway. Canary Islands’ President Paulino Rivero, who was directly involved with representatives of the tomato growers, said talks were “positive”. During the meeting, Rivero recognised the importance of the Canary Islands’ tomato sector, both economically and socially. A conservative figure suggests that 20,000 jobs are dependant on it. The regional Government review said that any further delay to the start of the 2014/2015 season would threaten jobs, and the longterm stability of the Canaries in the marketplace. Its initial five-millioneuro grant will immediately filter through the businesses, and Rivero pledged that the money

six years, and Rivero is trying to get this aid paid out sooner than later. The President will also speak with the Spanish Agriculture Minister next week to find a national solution. Gustavo Rodríguez, spokesman for the Platform in Defence of the Tomato, explained last week that if planting didn’t start soon, the quality of the harvest would be jeopardised. “Issues concerning the biology of the plant, climatic conditions and

the seasonality of the market are all important,” he said. “The longer planting is delayed, the further away we stray from the optimal scenario.” The problem was an argument between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Canary Islands Government over who should provide aid first. With both sides digging in, the growers were left without funds to plant next year’s crop. Thankfully, a solution seems to have been agreed.

South a paradise for tourists SOUTHERN Tenerife is among the Spanish tourist areas recording the highest occupancy rates during May.

According to data from the National Statistics Institute, a total of 200,935 passengers, of whom 37,102 were resident in Spain, enjoyed

would be paid straight away. He also promised to hold a meeting with the heads of those financial institutions operated by the sector to try to find some long-term solutions to the sectors financial woes. Rivero also wants to find long-term solutions to the current short-term debt, and to achieve lines of credit for the sector. The Canary Islands is also owed eight million euros by the EU to help the sector over the next

some holiday time here that month. The number of overseas holiday-makers 163,833, is a 10% increase on the same month last year. Nationally, the South of Tenerife is an impressive fourth on the list. Barcelona lead the way with 675,547 visitors - a street ahead of secondplace Costa Blanca and its 325,320 holiday-

makers. The report also notes that the Adeje and Arona regions were the most popular in the South. Adeje welcomed 103,368 passengers, of whom 84,946 were foreigners and 18,422 residents in Spain. Arona catered for 58,926 visitors, 51,444 of them living abroad, while the rest were made in our country.

The excellent figures are set to be repeated over the coming months, with many hotels and national chains reporting better-thanexpected bookings. And it’s a similar story at the airports. Some analysts have already suggested that this winter could be the busiest on record in Tenerife … and especially in the south!

Warship sailors enjoy the peace

THE warship HMS Iron Duke has been in Santa Cruz this week, making a first port visit on her six-month operational deployment in the Atlantic.

The 4,200 tonne ship docked in the capital for four days, prior to embarking on her operations off West Africa. The ship’s company of over 190 sailors enjoyed a few days of rest and relaxation, but sports and adventurous training were high on the agenda for some. The Portsmouthbased frigate paused on her way to operations with partner nations in the Atlantic Ocean to top up on provisions, but also as a brief stand down for the crew.

During their Tenerife stop, a few groups took the opportunity to scuba dive and explore the crystal-clear waters, seeing huge Eagle Manta Rays as well as the Island’s underwater geology. Lieutenant Matt Head, the Assistant Marine Engineer Officer said: “It was a spontaneous decision to go diving, with an earlymorning start to get to the dive site. But it was well worth it. The marine life was amazing.” The Iron Duke’s cycling team took the bold decision to ride up Mount Teide at 2,100m above sea level. Climbing the volcano provides the longest continuous ascent from sea level to summit in Europe and it is the destination of choice for Team Sky training. The ship’s cyclists, adorned in their colours, spent the day

tackling the long climb and soaring temperatures. They all reached the top and were rewarded with wonderful views - and an even better descent! Leading Engineer Technician (Marine Engineering) Baggsy Bagwell said: “The day was fantastic and the long climb really re-

warding. The team had been looking forward to this ride for a long time. “It was initially planned when the ship was deep into her intensive Operational Sea Training. “In one climb, we transited through so many landscapes, from pine forests to the

moon-like crater at the top. It’s definitely been a ride to remember.” The Type 23 frigate was dwarfed in the port as she was joined by P&O’s Oceana, enabling her Captain to pay a call on HMS Iron Duke’s Commanding Officer, Commander Tom Tredray. “It was really interest-

ing to discuss the similarities and differences of life as a Captain onboard a cruise ship to that of one onboard a warship,” said the Commander. HMS Iron Duke sailed from Portsmouth in late June for a sixmonth deployment on operations in the Atlantic.

Tourism still blossoming SUMMER is well and truly here, and the seasonal staff are in place – and even more of them this year.

Official records show that in June, Tenerife’s tourist sector had the highest number of workers for five years. In fact, 10,555 people’s jobs are directly linked to tourism, which is an amazing 68% increase on the 4,274 in 2013.

Cabildo President Carlos Alonso is delighted with the figures and believes the sector will outstrip the expected 25% increase expected in the Canaries. In addition, Alonso has confirmed that most of the industries linked to tourism experienced doubledigit increases in their seasonal hiring. This positive data goes cap in hand with the news

that June saw the seventh consecutive monthly decrease in unemployment. This time, 3.6% fewer people are seeking work. And there is good news in other employment sectors as well. The hospitality recruitment sector in June increased 69.8% over the previous year. There were 7,692 working contracts 3,163 contracts more than in June last year.

The food and beverage sector saw an increase of 37.1, year on year. With the economy warming up, there is a real sign that progress is being made on the job front. Unemployment is down 7.9% in June, compared with last December in the Canaries. As for the tourist sector, registered unemployment fell by 3.6% over the previous year.

Canarians are getting older

THE average age of the Canary population is now 40, which is a rise of four more years than at the beginning of the Millennium.

And it seems that the aging of the Canarians is not stopping. Latest data from the Statistical Institute of the Canaries (Istac), shows that to the year 2013, people on the archipelago had reached the symbolic age of 40 years, when in 2000 it was 36. The ratio of the population of children to the elderly shows, for the first time, that for every 10 people on the islands, only three are under 16 or over 64. Sociologically, this upward trend means that if the ageing continues long-term, the sustainability of the pension system may be jeopardised. However, the situation on each of the islands is completely different. The figures paint a demographic map, clearly divided into two parts: East and West. For example, the average age on Fuerteventura (36.4 years) is almost four lower than that of the entire Archipelago average. The most western island, El Hierro, is at the opposite end

with an average of 44.2 - more than four above average. Either way, there is no exception to the rule all the islands have seen age-population increase dramatically in the early 21st century. The municipality of Garafa, in La Palma, has the highest average age of 50.6 years, while the capital of Fuerteventura, Puerto del Rosario, recorded the lowest, of 35. All towns in La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro exceeded 40 years. And in contrast, only two municipalities in the eastern-most islands can match them - Lanzarote, and Betancuria, in Fuerteventura. This survey also shows that senior citizens are living longer. Official statistics indicates that in the Archipelago, 14.4% of people are over the age of 65, which is an impressive increase of 11.9% in 14 years. Again, there is a real East-West divide. Fuerteventura has the lowest rate of over-65s (8.2%) and El Hierro the highest at 22.1%. The most aged municipality is located in La Gomera. In Agulo, 33.27% are over 65, which is 26% higher than in Pajara - a kids’ paradise - where just 7% are pensioners! Meanwhile, the proportion of under-15s is

14.5%, while in 2001 it was almost 16%. Again the figure is higher in the East and lower in the West. Fuerteventura has 16.5% while in La Gomera, just 11.7% are minors. In fact the kiddie rate is surprisingly lower in many municipalities. San Andrés and Garafa (La Palma), Vallehermoso, Hermigua and Agulo (La Gomera), along with Valleseco and Artenara Tejeda (Gran Canaria), all have fewer than 10% of the population under 15. In the last two, the proportion of children is just 6%. And what of the two main Canary cities? Both have a similar demographic, although Tenerife capital Santa Cruz, is a little older. The two cities have similar average ages (Santa Cruz 41.8% with Las Palmas on 41%) And respectively: old age (17.4% and 15.9%) and youth (13.5% and 13.8%). The National Statistics Institute (INE) estimates that in 2023, the over-65s will represent 19% of the Islands and the under-16s will account for just 13%. This “problem” is not just a Canarian one to ponder. Similar figures are being recorded in Spain and the whole of the European Union.

Spanish Apps bonus to aid digital tourists THE Spain in Apps platform, a new app aimed at offering a response to the needs of the digital tourist, has been unveiled by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.

The aim is to maintain Spain’s leading position in the tourism industry, which means that Spanish tourism must commit to innovation and new technologies. These initiatives are in response to the new habits of travellers, and the strong influence of new technologies on transforming the tourism industry. This phenomenon should be seen as an opportunity rather than a threat to the tourism sector. In fact, this industry has been most influenced by the emergence of mobile telephones. An estimated 6.8 billionplus now exist around the world, making them an essential tool for holiday organising. This is also creating a unique framework for the development of entrepreneurial activity in tourism and innovative companies. The Ministry of Industry is responding to the importance of these new needs from the digital tourist. The mobile version of

the official website for tourism in Spain has already been presented, and officials are fully aware that 25% of all visits to the website are made via a mobile device. This new version improves user-experience with more practical and easier browsing, plus faster access to the information. The mobile version is available in Spanish, English, French and German, with optimised content, images and tools for responding to the travellers’ needs.

In addition, the Ministry of Industry has launched the Spain in Apps technology platform for the development of tourism apps. This platform is linked closely to the Smart Tourism Destinations project, one of the measures forming part of the National Comprehensive Tourism Plan (PNIT) 2012-2015. A set of apps linked to various tourist destinations, segments, products and services in Spain, presented last week, featured destination guides, apps for beaches, apps for enjoy-

ing nature, for travelling with children, for booking and selling experiences, etc. The various features include a number of accessibility tools, including the option to incorporate user-generated content, postcard design and the ability to rate the various resources. These apps will soon incorporate a planner, which will enable the creation of a travel book to help users select activities, points of interest and organise customised routes. Spain in Apps has

a two-fold objective. From a demand perspective, it provides tourists with up-todate information about tourist destinations, products and services, the content of which is taken from Spain.info and other sources. From an offer perspective, the platform generates applications that enable data to be gathered anonymously, making it possible to gain an understanding of tourist behaviour patterns in Spain. By gathering this data, Spain in Apps will enable destination

managers to take decisions based on concrete information. It will, therefore, help to raise efficiency in the management of tourism policies, and it will enable relevant businesses to adapt their product or service to real tourist demands. To that end, this initiative forms an essential part of the Open Data and Big Data project of the Industry Ministry in the tourism sector, which will help improve Spain’s competitiveness as a tourist destination.

Roller-coaster tragedy AN Icelandic teenager has plunged to his death from a roller-coaster ride called “Inferno” at a Spanish amusement park.

The unnamed 18-yearold, on holiday with his family and a friend, flew out of the green-coloured, twisting ride on Monday at Benidorm’s Terra Mitica (Mythical Land) amusement park. A spokesperson at Alicante police station, said: “We received a call at 4.45pm because an 18-year-old man had been thrown out of his seat. He hit the ground and died shortly af-

terwards in the ambulance.” Police said the seat’s harness opened, but it

was unclear whether the cause was a mechanical fault. The ride has been closed during

police investigations. Terra Mitica management issued a statement saying the roller-coast-

er, officially certified as safe, was checked daily by amusement park staff. “For the moment, the cause of the accident is unknown,” said the management. “We offer all our support to the family, and Terra Mitica will carry on investigating the cause of this most unfortunate incident.” It was the first accident the park had experienced in its 14 years. A spokeswoman for the regional Valencia High Court said an investigating judge was awaiting a police report within the next few days before deciding on further action to discover what happened.

Di Stefano: 11th July 2014 - 17th July 2014

a true legend

ALFREDO Di Stefano, football’s first superstar and regarded as one of the greatest players of all, has died at the age of 88.

The Real Madrid legend, capped by Spain 31 times despite being born in Argentina, suffered a heart attack on Saturday and had been in an induced coma in Madrid’s Gregorio Maranon hospital. The forward won five straight European Cups, scoring in each final between 1956 and 1960. Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson told BBC Radio 5 live: “Di Stefano was, without question, in that group of great, great players.” He recalled Di Stefano’s “wonderful balance and poise” when he

watched him at Hampden Park in the 1960 European Cup final. “In the semi-final, Eintracht Frankfurt beat Rangers and we looked upon Eintracht as almost certain to win the cup - but Real Madrid were a special team,” he said. “I had the pleasure as a young man of being influenced by the great Real Madrid and Di Stefano. His head was up all the time. He was such a fantastic footballer.” Fergie added: “For Real Madrid, it is a terrible loss because his presence was always there.” Sir Bobby Charlton, who played against him for Manchester United, said Di Stefano was one of the best players he ever saw. “The footballing world has lost a great player and a great man,” said Charlton, a United director. “I have many fond

memories of my time with Alfredo and feel privileged to be able to call him a good friend.” UEFA president Michel Platini said Di Stefano had helped revolutionise football. “He won everyone’s heart with his brilliance as part of the legendary Real Madrid team,” he added. “Together with his gifted team-mates, he helped invent modern football. He embodied all that is magical about football.” Brazilian legend Pele added: “He was a trail-blazer and, most of all, he was a legend

of the game. God rest his soul.” He had been Real’s Honorary Club President since 2000, overseeing many quality signings. Real President Florentino Perez said he and the club’s board expressed deepest condolences and all their love and affection to his children, their families and friends”. A club statement said Di Stefano was “the greatest player of all time”. In addition to his European Cup successes, the Argentina-born player won eight Spanish league titles and was

voted European player of the year in 1957 and 1959. He left Real in 1964 at the age of 38, having scored more than 300 goals across 11 seasons. Di Stefano played at international level for three nations, but never appeared at the World Cup. He won six caps for Argentina and played four times for Colombia during a spell in that country’s league. However, FIFA do not recognise those Colombia caps officially. In 1954 FIFA said he could not play for Spain, but reversed that decision in 1957 after he gained citizenship and

he went on to score 23 goals in his 31 appearances. As a manager, Di Stefano led Boca Juniors and River Plate to Argentine league titles, and he also won La Liga and the Copa del Rey with Valencia. He had spells at Sporting Lisbon, Rayo Vallecano and Castellon before taking over at Real in 1982. During his two-year tenure at the Bernabeu, the club were runnersup in five competitions, including the 1983 Cup Winners’ Cup, in which they lost the final to an Aberdeen side managed by Ferguson. Di Stefano managed Real again for five months, from 1990, winning the Spanish Super Cup against Barcelona. Argentina and Barcelona forward Lionel Messi said: “The world lost a legend - an amazing man, on and off the field.” Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo added: “It’s a very sad day; for me, for all the Madridistas, for the world of football.” And Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho paid his respects, saying: “This is a very sad day for football and football fans when we lose a special person like this.”

Tenerife’s Mr Muscles almost cleans up on worldwide stage

Chris weighs in again! CHRIS PENNEY, Tenerife businessman and body-builder extraordinaire, just failed to pull off a magnificent international double on Sunday and Monday.

Last year, at the same venue in Sapri, a small town on the southwestern tip of Italy, he won the IBFA heavyweight Mr Universe and Mr Europe titles. On Sunday, he slipped slightly, finishing runner-up in the “big” one - the Mr Universe competition, which featured 250 entrants. But he maintained his success in the Mr Europe contest by clinching the top spot again. The whole population of just over 7,000 came to a halt to support the event last year, and they gave a repeat display this time as well. Having won the Spanish heavyweight title a

few weeks ago, Chris used this as a benchmark for his condition. “I know it sounds a bit daft, but I’ve won the title seven times now, and I use this event to judge whether I am in good enough shape to compete in the international arena,” he said. In fact, after his golden double last year, he dedicated himself even more to the gym, arriving at this Mr Universe

test in “the best shape” of his life. “I upped my weights considerably in the gym over several months and I really felt good about the event,” said Chris. “I won the two ‘Senior’ events (over-40s) last year, but this time I competed in the over23s category, which meant I was up against quite a number of young men.” “So to finish runnerup in the Mr Universe and win the Mr Europe title gave me a great buzz, considering the guy who won was just 29. “I have trained so hard and now I’m going to put my feet up, enjoy life for a while and take the family out for meals.” Chris, who really does have the most incredible physique, with muscles on muscles, must terrify the fit young studs he competes against. He added: “I am very disciplined when I am training and I watch my

diet carefully. But I’ll let go a little now as I’ve finished competing for a while “I’m always conscious that the weight piles on easily if I’m not careful with my diet. I’ll probably put on a few kilos, but they will soon come off when I start training seriously again.” Sapri’s not an easy place to get to from Tenerife and, after a 3am start, using planes, trains and cars, Chris eventually reached the town on the Cilentan coast at 6pm on Saturday. The main event began at 6.30 on Sunday night and finished at a mindboggling 3.30am, which left him shattered. In high humidity, Chris was adjudged to have finished second in the Mr. Universe (Senior Heavyweight category). It was another outstanding achievement by him when you consider that he was competing against youngsters nearly half is age. Six months earlier,

Chris changed his trainer to Ivan Sanchez, from the El Templo gyms in La Chafiras and Cosa de Silencio. “I needed a much more scientific approach to my diet and training,” said Chris. “Ivan was recommended to me and it really is the best thing that’s ever happened to me since I’ve been competing. I’m in the best competitive shape of my life.” The following day there was no respite because he then tackled the Mr. Europe contest. Chris again entered the Senior Heavyweight category and was triumphant for the second year running. “All the training, the sweat and eating every few hours with the diet has paid off. again,” he said. “It was just amazing.” He thanked his trainer, Ivan, and also his wife, Tanya, for preparing his food all year - a major task in itself - and his two sons, Max and Zak. Last year, Chris felt he was at

the pinnacle of his bodybuilding career and was pondering whether to continue. Now, though, having enjoyed more success, he’ll be gunning for fresh glory next year. “I’ll probably pack up when I stop winning and not enjoying the sport,” he said with a grin. It has been an incredible all-round experience for the man who began lifting weights when he was 30 and competed in Canarian contests a year later. His early progress was noted, and he was persuaded to press ahead into the national arena, which he did successfully. And before he knew it, he was competing - and winning - international events. “It’s the only place for me now,” said Chris. “But I like to take part in national events to make sure my standards aren’t slipping.” Fat chance of that happening to Tenerife’s Mr Muscles!

Drunken lives of the Cambridge war spies THE “Cambridge Five” spy ring, recruited in the Thirties by the Soviet Union, were seen as hopeless drunks, incapable of keeping secrets. The infamous group Donald Maclean, Guy Burgess, “Kim” Philby and Anthony Blunt were recruited as Soviet spies while at Trinity College, Cambridge. And there may have been a fifth spy in the ring, possibly John Cairncross. Newly-released documents from the Mitrokhin Archive have been made available to the public for the first time. The quartet penetrated the UK intelligence system and passed valuable information to the Soviets during World War Two, and the early stages of the Cold War. But the descriptions on both sides varied wildly. The Soviets saw them as irresponsible boozers,, while the FBI described

the files as the most complete intelligence ever received. Major Vasili Mitrokhin smuggled the information out of Soviet archives during his 12 years with for the KGB. While teaching at Cambridge University, Blunt was influential in recruiting the other three, who were all students there. Burgess became a journalist after he left university, but joined MI6 when war broke out. Maclean was in the Foreign Office during the same period. Burgess and Maclean, tipped off by Philby in 1951 that they were under suspicion, defected to the Soviet Union, where they spent the rest of their lives. Philby defected in 1963 the same year Blunt was discovered by the British intelligence services. He was offered immunity in return for information and he defected

back to Britain in 1992. Among the thousands of pages of documents are profiles outlining the characteristics of Britons who spied for the Soviet Union. They include references to Donald Duart Maclean and Guy Burgess, two of the five men recruited while studying at the University of Cambridge during the 1930s. A short passage describes Burgess as a man “constantly under the influence of alcohol”. It is written in Russian and goes on to recount one occasion when a drunken Burgess risked exposing his double identity. “Once, on his way out of a pub, he managed to drop one of the files of documents he had taken from the Foreign Office on the pavement,” explained translator Svetlana Lokhova. Moving on to Maclean,

the note describes him as “not very good at keeping secrets”. And it adds that he was “constantly drunk” and binged on alcohol. The file adds that it was believed he had told one of his lovers and his brother about his work as a Soviet agent while he was sozzled. The notes also provide an insight into the extent of the group’s activity as they helped the KGB penetrate the UK’s intelligence network at the highest level. They describe how Burgess alone handed over 389 top secret documents to the KGB in the first six months of 1945, along with a further 168 in December 1949. Along with Kim Philby, Anthony Blunt and a fifth man, probably Cairncross, the Cambridge Five passed information about the UK to the Soviet Union throughout

World War Two and into the Fifties at least. After being recruited during their studies, the group went on to occupy positions within the Foreign Office, MI5 and the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS). Shortly before the end of the war, Philby was promoted to head of SIS’s anti-Soviet section. That meant he was in charge of running operations against the Soviets while operating as a KGB agent. Mitrokhin was a senior archivist in the KGB’s foreign intelligence HQ and had unlimited access to thousands of files from a global network of spies and intelligencegathering operations. He became disillusioned with the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and began handwriting notes from the files which, he believed, would be of use to for-

eign intelligence. His defection was regarded as a major coup and provided an insight into the extent of Soviet intelligence operations throughout the Cold War. Throughout his life, he made it clear he wanted his files opened to the public and, following his 2004 death, his family worked with the Churchill Archive Centre in Cambridge to realise this wish. His notes, handwritten in school notebooks, remain classified, and some information has been redacted. But 19 of the 33 box files containing typewritten versions of his notes, all in Russian, can be viewed by visitors to the archive centre. Cairncross, who had worked in the Foreign Office, was named as a spy by KGB defector Oleg Gordievsky. But he was never prosecuted.

House prices on the slide A NEW report from the Evaluation Society makes grim reading for homeowners.

It suggests that the average price of accommodation fell 6.5% in the second quarter of 2014 in the Canaries compared with the same period last year. However, there is better news nationally. In Spain, the average land price stood at 1,328 euros per square metre at the end of the second quarter, representing a 4.5% increase from the previous quarter, when the house prices stood at 1,270 euros per/sqm. Despite this increase, the average price today is still nearly 45% lower than the peak value reached in 2007, when it stood at 2,401 euros per/ sqm. The average price of new and used homes in the whole of Spain fell 2.3% in the second quarter, although it is an improvement on the same 2013 quarter, which had a mind-blowing 15% drop in the quarter to June 2013. Breaking down the

data, the price of new housing fell 4.8% over the last year and 1.8% in the first six months of 2014, representing a fall of 40% in real terms since the highs of March 2002. Falling prices of new housing in the first half of 2014 has been less marked than in the second half of 2013 (-3%) and in the first half of last year (-5%). By region, Cantabria and Valencia were showing larger decline in average house prices, with drops of 10.6% and 9.8%, respectively. They were followed closely Galicia (-6.6%), Canaries (-6.5%) and Castilla y León (-5.7%). The declines were less pronounced for Asturias (-1%) and Castilla-La Mancha (-1.2%). The Evaluation Society indicates that, in general, there isn’t a significant improvement in the level of housing demand. The Society’s statement said: “There has been some stabilisation of housing prices, which we have observed. But there is no assurance that the market has bottomed out just yet.”

Mixed treasure buried in cave AN astonishing collection of Roman and Late Iron Age coins has been unearthed in a Peak District cave.

It is the first time coins from the two separate civilisations have been found together. The precious hoard was initially found by a member of the public, who stumbled across a few coins in Reynard’s Cave in Dovedale. It triggered a fullscale excavation of the

site, which itself adds to the mystery surrounding the discovery. While Roman coins have often been found in fields, this is understood to be the first time they have been unearthed in a cave. Archaeologists have discovered 26 coins altogether, including three Roman ones predating the invasion of Britain in AD 43. Twenty other gold and silver pieces which are Late Iron Age, are thought to belong to the Corieltavi tribe.

Floyd in the pink again A NEW album will be released by Pink Floyd in October their first in two decades.

Polly Samson, wife of guitarist David Gilmour tweeted: “Btw Pink Floyd album out in October is called The Endless River. “Based on 1994 sessions is Rick Wright’s swansong and very

beautiful.” Wright, a founding member of the group, died of cancer, in 2008. Backing vocalist Durga McBroom-Hudson also confirmed the news in a post on Facebook, writing: “YES. THERE IS A NEW PINK FLOYD ALBUM COMING OUT. AND I’M ON IT. And there was much rejoicing.” A source close to the project told The Sun:

17 CW

“This will be one of the most exciting pieces of music for decades because it is the closest we will ever come to a Pink Floyd comeback.” A spokesman also told the paper that there would be no tour to accompany the album’s release. Responding to fans who commented on her Facebook page, McBroom-Hudson said Roger Waters, who left Pink

Floyd in 1985, would not feature. The band achieved worldwide fame in the Seventies and Eighties with albums such as The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall. After numerous lineup changes over the years, founding members Dave Gilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Rick Wright reunited in 2005 to perform at Live 8 in Hyde Park.

National Trust archaeologist Rachael Hall believes whoever owned the cache, which has been declared as “treasure” by the authorities, was probably a wealthy figure. She said: “The coins would suggest a serious amount of wealth and power of the individual who owned them. “Coins were used more as a symbol of power and status during the Late Iron Age, rather than for buying and selling staple foods and supplies.

“Was an individual simply hiding his ‘best stuff ’ for safe keeping? Or, perhaps speculating, in the hope that the value would increase in the future, like a modern-day ISA?” Rachael added: “The situation of the cave can’t be ignored, either. “Could it have been a sacred place to the Late Iron Age peoples that was taboo to enter in everyday life, making it a safe place that would ensure that person’s valuables were protected?”

Gay rights row bakes over A BAKERY in Northern Ireland, run by Christians, refused a customer’s request to make a cake with a gay marriage slogan.

Now, though, that refusal could backfire on the firm, which may face a discrimination case in court. Ashers Baking Company declined an order from a Gay Rights activist, asking for cake featuring Sesame Street puppets Bert and Ernie. The customer also wanted the cake to feature the logo of a Belfast-based campaign group called Queerspace. The County Antrim firm could find themselves in hot water, facing legal action from the Equality Commission. The watchdog confirmed that it was assisting the customer whose order was refused, and has written to the company on his behalf. The bakery, founded in Newtownabbey in 1992,

is run by the McArthur family. The directors, all Christians, operate six shops in Northern Ireland and employ 62 people. Daniel McArthur, the 24-year-old general manager, said marriage in Northern Ireland “still is defined as being a union between

one man and one woman”, and added that his company were taking “a stand”. The customer placed the order in Ashers’ Belfast branch some weeks ago, and it was then passed to their head office. In an online statement, Mr McArthur said: “The

directors and I looked at it, considered it and thought that this order was at odds with our beliefs. “It certainly was at odds with what the Bible teaches, and on the following Monday, we rang the customer to let him know that we couldn’t take his order.” Mr McArthur said the customer was offered a full refund, which was collected shortly afterwards. “We thought that was the end of it, but approximately six weeks later we received a letter from the Equality Commission,” he said. “It said we had discriminated against the customer on the grounds of his sexual orientation. Northern Ireland, by the way, is now the only part of the UK which has not passed a law to introduce same-sex marriage. “It asked us to propose how we would recompense the customer for this discrimination. It also said it would pursue legal proceedings if we didn’t respond within a seven-day period,”

said Mr McArthur. The general manager was “very surprised” by the watchdog’s letter and his company asked the Christian Institute for advice on how to handle the case. The Institute is now supporting the bakery’s stance and is providing legal assistance. Mr McArthur added: “If we don’t take a stand on this case, how can we stand up against it further down the line?” The general manager said it was not the first time his company had refused cake orders. “In the past, we’ve declined several orders which have contained pornographic images and offensive, foul language,” he recalled. “I would like the outcome of this to be that any Christians running a business should be allowed to follow their Christian beliefs and principles in the dayto-day running of their business - and that they are allowed to make decisions based on that.” But Gavin Boyd, a gay rights campaigner with Northern Ireland’s

Rainbow Project, supports the customer’s discrimination complaint. “It is because of sexual orientation that the company decided not to print this,”” Mr Boyd told BBC Radio Ulster. “The law is really clear - you cannot pick and choose which sides of the law apply to you. “If you are a company trading out there in the market place, you can’t pick and choose whether or not to fulfil an order based on a customer’s sexual orientation.” The watchdog said in a statement: “The Equality Commission for Northern Ireland provides advice and can provide assistance to people who complain to us that they have suffered unlawful discrimination. “In this case, the Commission has granted assistance to the complainant, and has written to the company concerned on his behalf. “The Commission will consider any response before taking further action.”

A different view

11th July 2014 - 17th July 2014

By Mike Walsh FORMER Libyan President Colonel Gaddafi intended to use his country’s enormous gold reserves to create the African Dinar.

This new trading currency would replace the Petrodollar and Euro. In doing, so it would remove and replace the Western Powers’ control of Africa’s enormous resources. The Libyan leader’s impudence was tantamount to signing his own death warrant. You don’t mess with Wall Street or the Square Mile! It didn’t help his cause that he was, simultaneously, negotiating with President Vladimir Putin, the Russian leader who was looking for an additional military base to the existing one in Syria. Gazprom, Russia’s energy giant, the biggest in the world in which the Russian state is major shareholder, had already sunk $10 billion ( around £585bn) into developing Libyan infrastructure in a sweetheart barter deal for its unique brand of Libyan oil. From the perspective of the Western Powers anything, even tribal anarchy in oil-rich Libya, was preferable to such a threat. Besides, there were few other countries on earth than the North African state with such resources, to be plundered and sold off to the oil conglomerates of the West. The stage was set for regime change. The more astute observers were sceptical, but public cynicism does not carry much weight with the big-hitters of Wall Street. They sent in the heavies, NATO did its job. The rest is history. The question is, where did the bullion in the Libyan National Bank’s vaults end up? There was an estimated 143 tonnes of gold bars in those vaults. It was listed 5th in the top20 gold deposits in the

19 CW

Where did all the money go?

world. The Libyan leader could liquefy all or part of it as he wished. The Times reported that the banking cartels had already teamed up to refuse to buy or trade Libya’s gold. Fool’s Gold, and the Libyan leader was now in a spot. He could make the gold work by trade barter only, selling it for cash and using that to purchase infrastructure or food. It could otherwise be used to finance hospitals and schools or purchase arms, presumably from Russia. Gaddafi used $33m (£19.50bn) - at interestfree rates - to finance and build the 4,000-kilometre Great Man-Made River. This was to be three parallel pipelines running oil, gas and water to supply 70% of the Libyan population with clean water, for drinking and irrigation. This engineering feat would also provide irrigation to grow adequate crops to make Libya a competitive exporter of vegetables, on a par with Israel and Egypt. Libya was by then a beacon to other African nations. It showed them the way to disengage and be independent of the Western currencies, and the strings that come with it. Gaddafi had also financed Africa’s first communication satellite with $300m (£1,775m) of the $377m (£1,995m) cost. By 26th December 2007, it was saving African na-

tions an annual fee of $500m (£397m), which had been previously pocketed by Europe for the privilege of using European satellites! As a consequence, Africans benefited from much better communications and considerably lower phone costs. The Western Powers were fuming. The Libyan leader, on realising the looming threat, is said to have moved the 143 tonnes of gold bars from Tripoli to an unknown city. This was possibly Benghazi, or perhaps Sabah in the South. From there, it could be transferred easily to the friendly, independent Republic of Chad. Gadaffi had, by now, learned a lesson from the earlier-deposed Saddam Hussein’s similar rebelliousness against Western hegemony. The Iraqi leader had shown intention to stop trading in the Petrodollar. Demonised, Hussein was portrayed as a threat to world peace by an ever-obliging Western media. The Iraqi leader, his country incinerated, was then caught and hanged. Egypt’s soon-tobe-ousted President Mubarak had been more canny. The Egyptian leader had first removed Egypt’s $64bn (£37.42bn) gold reserves to untraceable accounts in the European Union. Now, it might be just a coincidence, but right after Gaddafi was ousted, Chad just happened to be caught up in a “terrorism threat”. In “need

of Western help”, NATO was sent in to Chad to “provide assistance and stability”. Was their real purpose to find Gaddafi’s gold bullion? The Republic of Chad is near the Libyan city of Sabah, from where Gaddafi’s gold bullion could be removed overnight. Was America looking in the right place? Gaddafi had been mur-

dered. Dead men tell no tales, and there was the possibility that the intuitive Libyan leader had moved some or all of the gold bullion to Benghazi, the sometimes capital of Libya, Surprise, surprise; while Benghazi is being ripped apart by rival factions and there is no overall control, a Central Bank is set up in Benghazi to rival Tripoli’s Central Bank. This highly-sophisticated international bank is said to have been formed by a handful of street-fighters who, doubtless, would have difficulty counting the fingers, if they still have them, on their hands. Not bad, and before a government has been formed! You see, miracles do happen. But the question still remains? We know what happened to Libya. The vibrant, modern nation

has been reduced to the permanency of Civil war and tribal conflict. Oil output has dropped by two-thirds. Russian and Chinese investment has been shown the door and all developments are on hold. What we still don’t know is: what happened to Colonel Gaddafi’s 143 tonnes of gold bullion? Does former French President Nicolas Sarkozy know where the gold bullion is? The slippery manipulator is known to have formed a close, personal and financial relationship with the former Libyan leader. Sarkozy was last week arrested and likely to be charged with corruption. If he is prosecuted, he could face the threat of financial ruin and years behind bars. Perhaps he can buy his way out of gaol by disclosing where all, or part, of Gaddafi’s bullion is cached.

For 500 years or more, Scottish forces advanced and attacked to the tune of the pipes. Two-and-a-half thousand pipers served in World War One men from Scotland, England, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Within a year, a thousand of them were dead. This film brings together stories of unparalleled bravery as descendants of World War One pipers visit the Somme and Gallipoli, the battlefields where their ancestors, unarmed, piped their comrades ‘over the top.’ Contributions from military historians provide the descendants with new insights into the courage of these remarkable men and the terrifying prospect they faced as they emerged from the trenches and led their comrades into battle. This documentary uncovers why these centuries-old tunes, remembering ancient battles, still have a relevance today. Pipers Of The Trenches is part of the BBC’s World War One Centenary season, which is unlike any other the broadcaster has undertaken, not least because of its scale. With programming and events spanning the four years from 2014-2018, echoing the time-frame of World War One, it is the biggest and most ambitious pan-BBC project ever commissioned.

Celebrity MasterChef BBC1, 20:30 Celebrities compete in a contest of culinary skill. It’s the last of the semi-finals and the six remaining celebrity cooks continue to battle for the MasterChef title. The celebrities’ initial challenge is a MasterChef first - a relay invention test. Split into two teams of three, both teams must create one dish between them using a chicken and a range of vegetables, herbs and spices. Each team member has 20 minutes to make their contribution to the dish without communicating with one another - so each cook must attempt to decipher what the dish is meant to be from the clues left behind by their teammate. Next the celebrities have to showcase their own style and flair with pastry. They must each create one savoury and two sweet items for afternoon tea. Finally it’s back to the MasterChef kitchen to create one exceptional dish inspired by someone close to them.

The Men Who Made Us Spend BBC2, 21:00

Jacques Peretti investigates consumerism and confronts some of the men behind bestselling products and sales strategies in this three part series. In this episode, Jacques reveals how the wheel of consumerism is driven by product lifespans and delves into the history of planned obsolescence - of products being ‘made to break’. During his investigation, Jacques explains how consumers moved from replacing broken products with new ones to the contemporary attitudes of desiring new products for the sake of fashion and aspiration. This radical transformation in attitudes is at the heart of the consumer appetite and Jacques meets some of the people who have tapped into it, speaking to the companies who have taught consumers to buy into an everfaster cycle of ‘upgrades’. A former senior Apple employee reveals how the company’s focus on fashion encourages buying even when innovation slows, and an Ikea executive answers questions about the company’s commitment to sustainability.

Set against the turbulent backdrop of London in the 1940s, this adaptation of Sarah Waters’ bestselling novel, The Night Watch, follows four young Londoners inextricably linked by their wartime experiences. In a time when the barriers of sexual morality and social convention have been broken down, Kay, Helen, Viv and Duncan enjoy a freedom never experienced before. Moving back in time through the 1940s into the maelstrom of the Blitz, the lives, loves and losses of these four central characters are unravelled. For them, the postwar victory is bittersweet, for it returns them to the margins of society from which they hoped they had been liberated.

Secret Life Of Your Clothes BBC2, 21.00 In Britain, we give thousands of tons of our unwanted clothes to charity shops every year. But where do they actually go? It turns out most don’t ever reach the rail of the local charity shop - they’re exported to Africa. And even though we’ve given them away for free, our cast-offs have created a multi-million pound industry as some of the world’s poorest people pay good money to buy them. In this revealing film for BBC Two’s This World, Ade Adepitan tells the fascinating story of the afterlife of our clothes. He follows the trail to Ghana, the biggest importer of our cast-offs. One million pounds’ worth of our old clothes arrive here every week. Ade meets the people who making a living from our old cast-offs, from wholesalers and markets traders, to the importers raking in a staggering £25,000 a day. But not everyone is profiting. With cheaply made western clothes flooding the market, the local textile industry has been decimated. Ade visits the one of last remaining cloth factories and finds it on its knees. And the deluge of our clothes isn’t just destroying jobs, it’s also had a seismic effect on Ghanaian culture. Western outfits are fast replacing iconic West African prints and traditional garb. Ade travels to remote villages to find everyone wearing British high street brands – Dorothy Perkins, Marks and Spencer and Next.

Rio In Rio is the personal insight into the 2014 World Cup in Brazil from the former England and Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand. This trip has opened up a whole new world for Rio. While the focus has been on the pitch over the past month and Rio has been learning the ropes in broadcasting, he has also been meeting ‘Cariocas’ as the locals are known, to sample a city famous for its beauty, beach culture, good food, party music and to get their views on the World Cup in a country that hasn’t fully welcomed the tournament at a time of major social and economic problems across Brazil. How is the World Cup affecting their everyday life and who will benefit when the show leaves town? The man from Peckham is an active campaigner on racism, poverty and inner-city violence and first up he visits one of the favelas and community sports projects where some of the poorest live. The journey continues with a visit into the rain forest some 100 miles outside the city to see his good friends and former Manchester United team mates the da Silva twins, who welcome him in to their extended family home to sample Brazil’s first match of the tournament.

Nick And Margaret: Too Many Immigrants? BBC1, 21.00

With immigration at the forefront of the national news agenda, Nick Hewer and Margaret Mountford return to BBC One to explore the impact that Britain’s nearly 8 million immigrants are having on the UK, by bringing both sides of the debate together. In an ambitious experiment, five UK-born citizens with strong views on immigration come face to face with five immigrants to assess whether they are a ‘gain or drain’ on the UK. The immigrants have travelled from across the world to settle in London – from Poland, France, Pakistan, the Philippines and Somalia. In the first episode, the UK-born citizens explore the impact on jobs, housing and what it means to be British. They visit the workplaces and homes of their immigrant pairings and challenge them about whether they are taking British jobs and are responsible for the pressure on housing in London. As they spend time together, the UK-born citizens debate the impact of rapid cultural change, and Nick and Margaret consult a range of experts in order to understand and contextualise the bigger picture of immigration in the UK.

Operation Cloud Lab BBC2, 20.00 In Operation Cloud Lab a team of scientists take to the skies in one of world’s largest airships for a unique exploration of Earth’s most precious and mysterious environment - the atmosphere. Flying coast to coast across the United States, the team undertake a series of exciting experiments shedding light on the causes of wild weather, how life exploits the atmosphere, and the human impact upon the weather. The team begin their expedition by exploring clouds, which play a vital role in the planet’s ecology by transporting water from the oceans to the Earth’s land surfaces and generating 1.4 trillion tonnes of rainfall each day. Expedition leader and meteorologist Felicity Aston examines how clouds capture and store liquid water in the skies with an ambitious experiment to try and weigh a cloud. Former paratrooper Andy Torbet sets out to measure the forces that keep clouds afloat by parachuting through the turbulent and potentially dangerous air that surrounds one. The study reveals that clouds generate vast amounts of energy. A typical cumulus cloud - similar to the one Andy measures - generates enough heat energy to power the average home for 17 years. Microbiologist Dr Chris Van Tulleken completes the team’s examination of clouds with a study of one of the most radical ideas in meteorology - that some clouds are alive and as a consequence are more likely to form rain than others. Using the unique flight characteristics of the airship, Chris samples the air from within a cloud and detects the presence of live bacteria. Chris then reveals that bacteria are more effective at seeding rain than other, wellknown cloud seeding agents such as dust. For Chris the result challenges the whole way we understand how weather is created, raising the possibility that living clouds will rain more readily than clouds that aren’t. Finally, the team examine why there has been an increase in hurricanes along the Gulf Coast with surprising results.

The Great Big Romanian Invasion BBC1, 22.35 At the tail end of 2013, some of the UK papers were full of headlines about the prospect of millions of Romanians waiting to invade our shores, take our jobs and fleece our Welfare System once EU border controls were relaxed on 1 January 2014. Journalist and filmmaker Tim Samuels, himself a descendent of Romanian immigrants, looks behind the headlines, following the experiences of Romanians who have headed to British shores to live and work here for the first time, as well as exploring the UK’s continuing unease with the thorny issue of immigration. Tim uncovers friction between the business owners of London’s Park Lane and the Roma gypsies who’ve made their home on one of Britain’s most exclusive streets; joins the media scrum at Luton Airport on 1 January to witness the much-hyped invasion; and travels to Romania to find out why people want to leave their homeland in search of a new life - from those hoping to become taxi drivers in out-of-the-way English towns, to the Roma Gypsies desperate to get away from the discrimination and poverty they experience in their home country. Immersing himself with Britain’s newest immigrants, he experiences what it’s really like for the newest Romanian arrivals to become part of UK society, and also gets a sense of what genuinely worries some of us Brits about mass immigration. Irreverent, insightful and warm, The Great Big Romanian Invasion reveals some surprising sides to our own national psyche as well as that of our newest neighbours.

Habour Lives ITV1, 20.30 In this opening episode of the new series, Ben meets former lawyer Jeremy Channon, who recently gave up a six-figure salary to go into the family lobster fishing business. It’s a 5am start for Ben as he joins Jeremy on the hunt for kilo-sized lobsters to find out why he swapped his high-flying city job for a life at sea. Frustratingly, the day’s catch isn’t great as many of the lobsters are undersized, and with high daily running costs of the boat, can Ben help bring in a catch big enough to help Jeremy and his crew break even? Ben also meets local astro-photographer, Stephen Banks, who introduces him to the secretive world of night-time landscape photography. Stephen takes Ben to one of Dorset’s most iconic landmarks – Durdle Door – to attempt to photograph it in pitch darkness. An initially skeptical Ben is soon blown away by the truly breath-taking images he is able to capture, which opens his eyes to seeing Dorset in a whole new perspective. Finally, Ben discovers the secret behind the mining of one of the most important building blocks of Britain - Portland Stone. Sought after by architects for over 1,000 years, this distinctive limestone was the material of choice for Sir Christopher Wren when rebuilding St. Paul’s Cathedral after the Great Fire of London. Ben meets mine manager Mark Godden for an exclusive tour of the mines and to find out the mind-boggling methods used to extract this 145 million year-old Dorset stone.

This series follows a team of more than 10,000 engineers and construction workers as they race to build a brand new railway under London - Crossrail - London’s new Underground. Costing fifteen billion pounds, it’s the biggest engineering project in Europe and a huge challenge to pull off. As they burrow the fortytwo kilometres of tunnels, engineers must battle to make sure that listed buildings don’t crack, London Underground trains keep running, roads don’t shut and the City stays in business. Crucially, they must drive one of their gigantic 1,000-tonne tunnel boring machines through a tiny gap in the congested underbelly of Tottenham Court Road station without the passengers on the tube platforms below knowing they are there.

Welcome to Norland College, the quintessentially British 120-year-old childcare training college in Bath which turns its students into elite 21st Century Mary Poppins-style nannies. Norland Nannies have been sought after by the rich and famous for over a century and most recently the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge hired a Norlander as nanny to Prince George. Founded in 1892 by Emily Ward the college is renowned for its rigorous rules, traditional uniform, perfect buns and clean white gloves. In this documentary, we follow the second-years of Set 36, and get an insight in to how contemporary Norland students embrace and champion the college’s tradition and training. If they can successfully finish the £13,000 per-year course, a lifetime of employment and travel prospects could be theirs for the taking. Liz Hunt, Principal of Norland College says, “I’m carrying forward a great history and tradition from 1892 that this one Victorian woman started, and we often have conversationsabout what she would think if she could see it now.” We meet 19-year-old Laura Styles, who has always wanted to be a Norland nanny, and Georgina, 20, who told her mum when she was a little girl, “Mum, when I grow up, I’m going to have 100 children; and I might actually be able to do that now!” Georgina’s best friend Keziah, also 20, says, “If you’re going to be a nanny you might as well go to Norland, cause it’s the top of the top and it’s the best thing you can do.” Alongside their academic lessons the girls’ training includes cooking and sewing, as well as some unique challenges, amongst them a lesson in how to keep baby happy.

By Jamie Drew YEARS ago, everything that happened on a stage was live. There were no processed backing tracks or recorded parts - and no backing vocals, unless they were produced there and then.

Any vocalist working a venue would have to provide sheet music with a minimum of two parts: one for drums and one for keyboard. It meant that a singer was only ever as good as his or her backing. If the resident musicians were not up to scratch, the artiste would have to struggle through with sub-standard backing. These artistes are a dying breed, and only the few still performing remember what life was like before the self-contained artiste, and the use of backing tracks was commonplace. Sadly, venues decided that instead of paying two musicians and a singer, they would just pay for a singer who used backing tracks thus saving money on a keyboard player and a

drummer. There are venues which prefer to stay live and employ duos, trios and bands only. Most of them have taken up residence somewhere and play the same venue every night, but one or two choose to tour their live show. In the last issue I featured Soundwave, who are the newest live-

playing duo to the circuit and are picking up gigs fast. Grand Theft Audio, Crush and The White Knights are all touring shows available afternoons as well as evenings. What is good about these guys is that they are able to set up in 10 minutes, the same as any other artistes on

the circuit. The boys work together like a Formula 1 pit team, and they now have the setup and de-rig down to a fine art. Others like the Vagabonds stay resident in one bar, and home for these guys is The Bulls Head, on Parque de la Paz. Lead singer Shiel Campbell was delighted to be offered a chance to work with an established band like the Vagabonds. And even after just over a year with them, he still gets excited when he goes in to work. “The buzz of working with live musicians cannot be replicated using backing tracks,” he said. “The whole feel of the song and the way you sing it changes when it is live.” It’s true, and it does make singers up their game. The last thing any singer wants is to fail in front of an audience. It is a completely different art to be able to sing with musicians. You must know your words like you know your mother’s face. You must also be able to listen to the music being played and recognise the correct time to sing and also, when not to open your mouth! The thing which upsets a musician the

most is when the band have invited a guest vocalist up to sing with them. But because that singer is so used to being alone on stage, he/she does not realise that singing extra words over a guitarist’s lead break is insulting to the musician and spoils what is being played. This is just a lack of experience on the singer’s part and most musicians and singers here in Tenerife are friends. So laying down a little constructive criticism is a lot easier than telling a relative stranger. Nearly all the live bands on the Island are visited regularly by the Island’s artistes, but not all are invited to sing with them. This is not necessarily the band’s choice. Sometimes, a singer will refrain from joining them on stage through

fear of looking foolish. So how does a singer gain the experience of singing with live musicians? Well, I believe that resident live duo Coast 2 Coast, at The Theatre Bar, have the answer. Every night, they give people a chance to sing live with them, and you don’t even have to be a pro. Members of the holiday-making audience are really enjoying this new experience, which has been dubbed Livee-Oke! It has actually taken off well and is warmly received by those who are just there to watch and listen. The Theatre Bar is now being visited by more and more entertainers who, after their own shows, call in for a drink and always do a song or two with Coast 2 Coast. This is proving very popular and a concept unique to this venue. It is such a good experience to sing with live with good musicians, and it really does enhance a vocalist’s singing. You feel part of the song rather than an adage to a recorded backing track. This experience should be on every singer’s bucket list. And, where possible, everyone should keep music live!

Adeje Mayor gets the taste! TOP local chefs Jorge Peñate Batista and Luis Martín González were welcomed to Adeje Council Chamber recently.

Mayor Jose Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and Andrés Pérez Ramos, Councillor for Education, invited the two men to congratulate them on their success in the 10th Regional Canarian Chefs’ competition. Jorge, assisted by Luis, won first place.

Jorge, who lives in Callao Salvaje, is the Sous Chef in the Las Aguas restaurant at the hotel Bahía del Duque, while Luis, from Armeñime, is head of the French La Brasserie restaurant in the same Costa Adeje hotel complex. Jorge’s winning menu consisted of a starter of “potatoes with a skin stock and loin of rabbit lightly grilled” and a main dish of “loin of oxen with pumpkin, roast banana and Palma honey”. The combination

scored top points with the jury, and Jorge said: “The competition was more complicated than previous years, when you could bring a dish more or less prepared in advance. “This year we had to improvise with ingredients in a limited amount of time.” The Mayor and Cllr Ramos expressed delight at their success. And Rodríguez Fraga added: “It is very important for us, and for Adeje in general, that we are there to help

in training and supporting our young people.” During the meeting, the winning pair were keen to stress the importance of promoting and developing Canarian cookery as an innovative and quality product. “In our dishes, we use potatoes and other local products such as pumpkins and bananas,” said Jorge. “We are essentially using top Canarian materials. We always work to present a dish that is interesting and top class.” He added, “People think Canarian cooking is boring and, personally, that hurts me because it depends very much on where you decide to eat.” Jorge also stressed the determination of both chefs to continue to work to improve. “Now, we are looking for national and international competitions at which we can defend and promote local products.” he said. “We are quite nationalist in that regard. If we don’t support our own products, who will?” Luis referred to the number of quality products used in traditional

Canarian foods, but he said it seemed to be difficult publicising them. “How many great cheeses have we in the Canaries, yet we don’t seem able to sell them,” he pointed out. “And that same goes for wines.” Jorge said Canarian products were not expensive either and that, perhaps, the problem lay with the commercial sector. A total of 33 chefs took part in the regional competition, with 10 finalists chosen, each allowed to bring a cooking partner. For the final, they had to prepare eight dishes in a limited time. “They gave us 30 euros for the main ingredient, which

was potatoes, and another 30 euros for other products, to spend in El Corte Inglés,” recalled Jorge. “The dish then had to be prepared from scratch in two hours.” Their future projects include a collaboration with the Spanish Cancer Association in August or September. “And all the money raised will go towards the KM Solidario Tenerife Sur,” said Jorge. “We will pick a tasting theme, but we’re not announcing all the details yet. “In fact, we are always looking for new projects, looking for ways to move ahead and evolve as chefs and people.”

Tackle antibiotic nightmare now!

By Val Sainsbury PRIME Minister David Cameron’s plan to tackle antibiotic resistance may take too long.

That’s the outcome of a parliamentary report from the the Science and Technology Committee, which says doctors and vets continue to prescribe antibiotics inappropriately. The MPs’ report acknowledged the Government’s recentlyannounced review, but warned that more immediate action was needed and said ministers should not wait for its outcome. But experts caution that a correct solution is more important than a quick one. During the ninemonth analysis, MPs on the select committee looked at more than 70 submissions of written evidence. They heard concerns that doctors were offering antibiotics just to placate patients with distressing symptoms. And examining farming practices, the authors said they “suspect antibiotics may be routinely used on healthy animals”. Professor Nigel Brown, president of the Society for General Microbiology, told the BBC: “There can be an expectation from patients that some sort of prescription will be handed out, and this needs to be tackled. “And we also need to

consider whether we should be using the same drugs in veterinary medicine as we do in human health. “If resistance develops in agriculture, we don’t want the same thing to happen to human pathogens.” (a pathogen is an agent which causes infection or disease). Cameron recently commissioned a review which will investigate why there have been so few effective anti-microbial drugs in recent years. Since 2000, there have been just five newlydeveloped classes of anti-microbial drugs. And most of these have been ineffective against gram-negative bacteria - a group of bugs which is becoming increasingly resistant to medication - and extremely difficult to treat. The panel of experts, from finance, science, global health and in-

dustry, is expected to report next Spring. But the select committee has called for a more urgent response, saying: “Announcing reviews is not the same as dealing with the problem.” The report continues: “It is clear to us that there is no room for procrastination. We urge the Government to take immediate and decisive action.” But Prof Brown cautioned: “This is a pressing need, but it is most important to get the right solution and not just a quick one.” The wide-ranging inquiry recommends a number of strategies to improve the current use of antibiotics, from better education for medical students to the development of cheaper, more rapid tests, to identify bacteria accurately. And the MPs say the Government’s review

must not delay discussions with the pharmaceutical industry about alternative pricing arrangements for drugs. The committee calls on the Government to monitor how well patients deal with their prescriptions, focusing in particular on whether people complete a full course of pills. A Government spokesperson said: “This is an incredibly important issue, which is why the Prime Minister has announced an urgent review to stimulate the development of new antibiotics, and why we are supporting GPs to prescribe more effectively. “Conserving antibiotics is everybody’s responsibility, so they can be used properly when they are really needed. We will respond to the report in due course.”

Clearing arteries will not prolong your life TENS of thousands of NHS patients are having operations to clear their arteries needlessly.

They believe it will cut their chance of a heart attack or even extend their life, but doctors are failing to tell patients that angioplasty is not a magic bullet to stop heart attack. That’s the view of Doctor Aseem Malhotra, consultant cardiologist and a leading expert in the field. Each year, some 30,000 people with a condition called stable angina opt to have the procedure, in which a tiny balloon is inserted into clogged arteries to help clear them. A metal ring called a stent is then put in to keep the artery wide. The theory is that widening the artery will improve blood flow and reduce the odds of a blockage. But Dr Malhotra said such patients were rarely told that the invasive procedure made no difference to their chance of having a heart attack, and neither did it improve their odds of long life. “Patients often have this treatment, but there is no convincing scientific evidence that this is true,” he added. “Cardiologists who stent patients with stable angina are frequently not giving this information to them.” Patients with stable angina experience chest pain, caused by restricted blood flow which is brought on by a trigger, such as exercise or stress.

Dr Malhotra cited a US study that found nine in 10 patients with stable angina believed, incorrectly, that angioplasty would cut their chances of a heart attack. The operation is also used as an emergency procedure to help maintain blood flow in patients who have suffered a heart attack. About 60,000 patients a year receive angioplasty in these circumstances. Dr Malhotra emphasised that there was good evidence to show it helped save the lives of such patients. He also said angioplasty could help reduce the frequency and severity of chest pain in those with stable angina. But he also stressed that patients with stable angina should be given all the information before making a decision on surgery. And he said they should be told that leading a healthy lifestyle and taking drugs such as statins could cut the chance of a heart attack. “Doctors should give them all the information before subjecting them to treatment,” he added. His comments were backed up by NHS England’s heart disease ‘tsar’, Professor Huon Gray. He said: “There is no evidence that coronary angioplasty reduces risk of heart attack or death in patients with uncomplicated stable angina. And it is important that doctors are clear with their patients about this.”

Health and Fashion

11th July 2014 - 17th July 2014

By Ruth Benson WE are all aware of fashion trends coming and going - some more memorable than others.

These trends can become popular if they have been worn or endorsed by a celebrity. But one particular “hit” this summer is the loom band. If you have children, you will know exactly what this latest trend is all about. But for those of you who haven’t, let me explain. The loom band is basically elastic bands entwined together to make a fashionable bracelet. The loom is, however, escalating to be this summer’s musthave. No longer is it just being worn by kids in the playgrounds: even the Royal Family have been seen wearing them. The Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Cornwall have both been armed with them. If this puts you off, don’t worry because the likes of David Beckham, Fearne Cotton and Har-

Loom band of gold! ry Styles have also worn this latest trend. I believe the reason these bands have become the latest craze with kids is that they can make any style and colour they want. My daughter looks on You Tube for new styles and ideas, and they don’t just stop at making bracelets. I actually think they are fantastic for kids to show their creativity. And who knows where the craze will lead? Patterns include the basic bands to “loosey gooseys”. I have no idea either! They come in a range of colours, with ones that glow in the dark, neon and have glitter. As with all fashion items spotted on a celebrity, an increase in sales is common. Since the Duchess of Cambridge was wearing her bracelet given to her by a primary schoolchild in New Zealand, Hobbycraft reported a 331% increase in sales.

Founder of the band is American Cheon Choon Ng, who is estimated to have sold more than four million kits after seeing his kids playing with elastic bands. And if this isn’t enough to convince you of the loom’s popularity, Amazon states it occupies every top-20 spot on its toy chart. And in terms of the alltime best-selling toys on Amazon, it is already ranked No.8 after classics such as Monopoly, Scrabble and the Rubik’s cube. The limits are endless with this toy, and its potential in what can be made, American TV host Jimmy Kimmel even wore a jacket made from the looms for his show. For those of you with kids, if you haven’t already got an armful of bands yourself, this is a 100% solution to keep the kids entertained and occupied during the long summer months.

DAMAGED GOODS! By Carl from Robot

THERE’S one aspect of my profession I will never get used to, and that’s seeing hair which has not only been mistreated but downright abused!

Nothing saddens me more than to have to say to a new client that there is nothing I can do with her hair, other than remove it. Clients are often unaware of the damage caused to their hair in salons. They seem to think us stylists have a magic solution to repair years of damage in one visit. Forget the “new” shampoos that say you can repair two years of fried hair in a couple of weeks. There is one solution only, and that is to cut it. To have to tell a woman the bad news upsets me as well as them. And I’ve shed tears umpteen times in the salon over hair that’s simply been burnt off with chemicals and over-use of hair irons. At what stage, I wonder, does a client show concern when she reaches the stage of the girl pictured. She was actually a client who came to my salon for a blow dry only, and ended up with half her hair on the floor. This hair had been totally bleached to death during a short period

of salon visits, yet she was unaware of the real damage. It took over a year to repair the misfortunate girl’s hair - weeks of treatments and re-cutting to try to overcome her disaster. Yet what could she have done to stop this? Well, as clients, you should always ask questions about what is being done to your hair - before and during treatments. You need to know the long-term effects of what you are asking to be done on your visit. If there’s nothing to hide, your stylist will not mind repeating what

exactly is happening with your precious hair. It is too late to complain once the damage is done, and no amount of crying or screaming will get your hair back. Listen to your stylist’s advice about aftercare and the upkeep of your hair. We love to advise you over hair-care matters, and it’s your chance in the salon to speak up and really know what’s happening to YOUR hair. So don’t leave it, as this poor girl did, and then realise that it’s too late. SPEAK UP!

By Monica Dyson WE all have them, don’t we? Senior moments! In my case, I also have blonde moments. Senior, blonde moments. What a combination!

It’s a fact that as we get older, we get more forgetful. What was I saying? Oh, yes, more forgetful, although to be fair, it’s not a foregone conclusion that it will happen., and often, something people say unkindly about the elderly. I like to think I have so many things to think about now I’m retired that I forget some of them! Going into a room and forgetting what you went in for is, apparently, common to all ages, not just seniors, because absent-mindedness is not just about senior moments. In a recent study of healthy adults, the average number of memory slips can be at least six per week. Things like putting the coffee jar

into the fridge and the milk into the cupboard. The study was conducted irrespective of age, gender or intelligence. It was the younger, busier people who were the most absentminded. A good memory can be something we either have or don’t have, and it has nothing to do with age. Unless, of course, we are unlucky enough to suffer the dreadful memory-loss disease of Alzheimer’s. This can strike at any age, although it usually seems to target the elderly. I don’t really have a bad memory, but I do have to write everything down. If I didn’t, I’d end up with 20 tins of beans, and catch the bus home from the supermarket when I drove there by car! My calendar is a very important feature of my home. I have to write down all appointments, all birthdays and reminders. I often have trouble remembering where I have left my car in a

supermarket car park anyway! My solution is to fix a landmark in my mind, which is okay as long as you remember the landmark! And although I often forget where I put my keys, at least I remember what I use them for when I do find them! Sometimes, I wonder if we have selective memories. I can remember dates, birthdays, words to songs, phone numbers and happy times, and block out unpleasant memories. I also believe women have better memories than men because they have to remember more. Multi-tasking of the memory cells! When was the last time your husband reminded you about someone’s birthday? Most men have trouble remembering their own!! Apparently, there are some tricks and strategies to help you banish those senior, memoryloss moments, many of them about a change in diet. Drinking green tea, ac-

cording to Chinese researchers, can help improve your memory and help delay the onset of Alzheimer’s. That’s because of the anti-oxidant it contains, which can protect against age-related, degenerative illnesses. Also, researchers at Oxford University have found that half a glass of red wine a day improves cognitive ability and memory. They don’t, however, say whether having a whole glass is even more beneficial, or if you develop a super brain if you finish the bottle! The same researchers say that eating chocolate can improve your memory and, especially, can aid mental arithmetic! I’m certainly willing to give that a try as my ability to work out anything more simple than the total of my shopping list is nil! Replace red meat with oily fish, use whole grains, nuts and seeds in your cooking or on your salads. Eggs are very good brain foods as they contain Vitamin D,

also found in Brewer’s Yeast. Drink plenty of water, cut down on salt, eat plenty of fruit, with cranberries and blueberries being especially good, and cut down your alcohol intake drastically. I have often heard people say that on the morning after the night before, they have trouble actually remembering anything about the night before. In fact, altering your lifestyle in small ways can help an awful lot in slowing down cognitive decline. Mental activities like crossword puzzles, Sudoku, learning a language and, of course, reading. Being physically active. Walking, swimming, dancing, bowling and aerobics are all very useful in keeping mind and body alert. Even the game of golf, said supposedly by Mark Twain, to be “a good walk wasted”, provides exercise and mental stimulation in the considerable amount of mileage walked - and

the arithmetic used to add up scores. It seems that fat around our middles, and many of us have plenty of that, has been linked to inflammation, which could affect your memory. Exercise can help slim your waist and protect your brain. And don’t worry too much about what is normal forgetfulness, like forgetting what you went upstairs for, forgetting the name of someone you’ve just met, or wondering where you’ve left the car. Our brains literally erase trivial information to make room for more important information which needs storing. However, if your memory problems include things like not recognising faces, colours, shapes and words, or forgetting the names of close relatives or friends, that could be linked with depression, grief, stress or lack of sleep. But these factors could be early signs of dementia, and it’s best to see a doctor.

Sun, fun and happy dogs OUR summer event saw many old and new faces coming together to enjoy a funfilled Sunday.

Many of the refuge dogs spent a few happy hours experiencing the love and affection they crave and deserve by some of the many visitors. Hopefully, one or two will be lucky and find their own special homes for keeps. We were entertained by many talented children’s dance groups, while grown-ups were given the opportunity to view the five-star refuge. Minnie, who featured in last week’s column, has been adopted by Liz and Dave, who

could not resist her. We wish them all a lot of happy years together. There are more than

200 dogs at the refuge, all seeking new homes, and maybe you are not able to commit to adopting one.

But we are always looking for volunteers to walk the dogs in the beautiful surrounding areas of the refuge.

If you would like to be involved, please contact the sanctuary, or visit at the appointed opening hours and

make a dog or two really happy. Please call 922 778 630 for more information, or if you would like to help out in any way. Towels and blankets are always needed for the dogs, and they would be very much appreciated by staff and animals alike. The refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological park ITER, where the windmills are. We are open to the public Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday between 2-5pm, and on Saturdays between 1-4pm. We are closed on Wednesdays, Sundays and on public holidays.

By Sue McDonald NOWADAYS, there is a tendency to buy cheap articles and simply throw things away when they are no longer working or in good condition.

11th July 2014 - 17th July 2014

OUR DISPOSABLE WORLD!

I was quite shocked recently when I had a good-quality DVD player that stopped working, and was told that it wasn’t worth repairing because I could buy a new one for the same price as an hour of their labour to look at it! I must admit that I am also guilty of this type of purchase, particularly with shoes. Sometimes they are so cheap that when they are worn out, it would be cheaper to buy the same again than get them repaired. Although this mentality seems wrong, it is the

way of the disposable world nowadays. This is all very well with smaller items, but when it comes to larger purchases, buying cheap can be a false economy. Take sofas for example. While you can get a cheap sofa bed for, say, 250 euros, you are getting a cheap sofa bed. In many ways you get what you pay for, and these are not particularly comfortable either as sofas or beds. Nevertheless, there is a market for these sofas, but I always point

out to people that if you need to replace the sofa after a year and have to buy another one, it is no longer a good, cheap buy! There is an old saying “Buy cheap, buy twice”. Budget is often the issue nowadays when clients come to see us about furnishing a property, and we are usually able to work within their limits. Where possible, however, we advise them to buy some items of good quality, and save in other areas which are less important. For example, we would always recommend that you spend a fair bit of

your budget on the sofa, because comfort is important to people. And as already mentioned, cheap sofas can be a false economy. Just think of how much time you spend sitting or lying on your sofa. It’s like shoes - they must be comfortable as you spend so long in them. But when you are looking at furnishing a whole property, nobody will notice that the corner table isn’t of fantastic quality, or that the pictures are quite cheap ones (actually there are some lovely cheap pictures around). It’s the same with beds. We would always

advise that you buy the best-quality mattresses you can afford. Other savings can be made, for example, in the window dressings. Roller blinds are a cheap option to make a room dark, and with a modern feel. And today, sunblock comes in a huge range of colours so that you don’t need to have two separate sets of curtains. If you have bought a pre-owned property, we can also offer a re-upholstery service. Provided the original sofa is of good quality and in reasonable condition, this can be a cheaper option than buying

Fostering friendships, with my garden plants By Margaret Tully

THERE is one tree that really does capture the feel of a Mediterranean or Canarian garden, and that is the Olive Tree (Olea europaea).

I have always imagined an olive tree growing in my garden but, as it’s so windy here, I thought it would not work. But that’s where I was wrong! A few weeks ago, hubby and I decided to remove an overgrown and very greedy Oleander, which had been planted in a sheltered spot against a garden wall, in full sun. Oleanders are great as windbreaks, but you certainly don’t want them taking up valuable sheltered areas. After spending nearly three days removing this monster plant, with greedy roots the size of small trees, a large hole was left behind and a massive expanse of wall. The Oleander had spread quite a bit and was taking up nearly the whole area. I thought I’d plant up the space next autumn with a couple of fruit trees, so I back-filled the hole with non-composted material, including what I thought to be dead banana plants. Would you believe it, a banana plant took root and soon emerged through the composting earth, which was a nice surprise. There was still a huge, empty area next to this plant which would be ideal for another fruit, but this time a tree. Sadly, friends of ours who are leaving the Island - but, I hasten to add, are going on to better things - had accumulated quite a collection of big plants, grown in large pots on their patio. They asked if I would like to adopt them into my garden and I was delighted to accept their offer. Lo and be-

hold, among them was the most gorgeous olive tree. It is tall and straight, with a slender trunk and goblet-shaped branches featuring delicate, sage-green leaves - the epitome of what an olive tree should look like. The perfect place in my garden was, of course, the sunny, sheltered spot. And there she has been planted! If you invest in an olive tree, siting it is one of the most important things to consider before you make your purchase. They like shelter and sun, and they like to be well-cared-for. But not too much. Don’t plant in layers and layers of rich soil, then water and water them. Water your tree in well, and again in a few

days. Then leave it for a week and water it really well again, making sure you get right to the roots at the bottom.

As with most plants in this climate, do not grow it in non-draining, cloggy soil, and don’t over-water. They like a little feed

now and again, and a natural one made from Comfrey leaves is ideal, or one that’s potashbased. The fruit appears on the branches of second-year growth, so do not prune these. The fruit starts as green and eventually ripens to black, but the tree must have the right conditions to achieve a successful black crop. I often wondered what to do with olives when you harvest them as they are not palatable straight from the tree. And a little research gave me the answer. The process is very simple, with just a little daily commitment required. Pick and wash your olives and score each one, down each side. Pour them into a tight-lidded jar and fill with water, secure lid and place in the fridge. The next day, pour away the old water and refill with fresh. Repeat the process for four weeks, and then rinse the olives again, this time returning them to the jar and fill with brine (125ml water, 125ml red wine vinegar and 1 tablespoon of salt). You can also add spices and herbs at this stage too, if you fancy. On the top, add a little layer of olive oil, which acts as a seal, and then seal the jar and leave for two weeks before using. It will keep in the

fridge for six months … if they last that long! Most nursery-bought trees are self-fertile, but if you want to branch out and buy two or three, you will definitely get a larger crop, although it’s not absolutely necessary. A “secret” recipe to keep your olive tree free from pests and diseases is a local mixture made with the Chamomile herb and Garlic, blended together and strained, then put into a spray bottle and spritzed on to your olive tree in the evening. This keeps most pests away and stops mildew or mould forming. Having said that, though, keeping a good, open tree, allowing a lot of air to circulate through it, should not attract mould. In Tenerife, the Wild Olive (Olea cerasiformis) tree grows, and is known as “Acebuche”. It is only a small tree (10 metres) and has had a long history of being used medicinally. The wood from this tree is said to be very strong and may have been used in the past as a wood for solid objects, as oppose to being burned. There are a lot of plants in my garden which hold memories of people, and that is what makes it a special place. In it, there is lots of love, friendship… and weeds!

Motoring

By Jav BENEATH the skin of this Peugeot 2008 sits Peugeot-Citroen’s revolutionary Hybrid Air transmission in prototype form.

The French company say the new transmission is a big part of their attempts by 2020 to release a production car, capable of averaging 141mpg on the road. Until now, a “hybrid” car has been acknowledged as one combining an internal combustion engine with an additional electric drive motor and a weighty battery pack. But PSA’s solution is simpler and, they say, far more cost-effective than the petrol-electric drivetrain pioneered by Toyota and other manufacturers. While the system is called “Hybrid Air”, it could better be described as “Hybrid Hydraulic”. This 2008 is primarily powered by the company’s 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, naturally-aspirated, 81bhp petrol engine. A new gearbox has been designed for the car, using a planetary gear set (similar in principle to the classic

11th July 2014 - 17th July 2014

Sturmey-Archer threespeed, bicycle hub gear). This type of gearbox enables power to be split between the front wheels and a pair of hydraulic pumps, which are mounted between the transmission casing and the nearside front wheel. Mounted along the centre tunnel of the car’s floorpan is a highpressure, cylindrical tank, containing a bladder filled with a combination of air and nitrogen. Under the rear seats is a conventional fuel tank, and under the boot floor is another cylindrical tank, designed

for low-pressure storage. The two cylindrical tanks and the hydraulic pumps in the transmission are all connected by a series of pipes to allow hydraulic fluid to flow around this closedloop system. While the engine and transmission can power the front wheels conventionally, it can simultaneously use the hydraulic pump to force oil into the centre tank. The oil compresses the air and nitrogen bladder as it is forced into the tank, creating an oil pressure as high as 220bar. When the car is coasting downhill, with the

engine idle, the planetary transmission can also turn on the hydraulic pump and pressurise the centre tank with oil. And when the centre tank is fully primed with hydraulic fluid under high pressure, it can be released back through the hydraulic pump. This then acts as a drive unit to turn the front wheels without assistance from the engine. The depressurised oil is returned to the lowpressure tank under the boot floor before being drawn back into the hydraulic pump when the car is coasting or

DPF Filters

By Emma at Motorworld

THE exhaustemissions’ standard for new cars have, effectively, required fitment of a DPF in diesel car exhausts since 2009.

That’s when the “Euro 5” standard came into force and many cars registered before 2009 will also have had a DPF (Diesel Particulate Fil-

ter) fitted in anticipation of the change. Even if your driving isn’t mainly urban/stopstart, changes to driving style may be required to keep these systems working properly. How do they work? The DPFs, or “traps”, do just that, catching bits of soot in the exhaust when they appear. As with any filter, they have to be emptied regularly to maintain performance. For a DPF, this process is called “regeneration” - the collected soot is burnt off at high temperature to leave only a tiny ash residue. And

there are two types of regeneration: Passive regeneration This takes place automatically on motorwaytype runs, when the exhaust temperature is high. Because many cars don’t get this sort of use, car manufacturers have to design “inactive” regeneration, where the engine management computer (ECU) takes control of the process. Active regeneration When the soot loading in the filter reaches a set limit (about 45%), the ECU will initiate postcombustion fuel-injection to increase the exhaust temperature and

trigger regeneration. If the journey is a bit stop-start, or you take your foot off the accelerator while the regeneration is in progress, it may not complete, and the warning light will come on to show that the filter is partially blocked. It should be possible to start a complete regeneration and clear the warning light by driving for 10 minutes or so at speeds greater than 70 kmph. If the regeneration is unsuccessful, the extra fuel injected will not burn and will drain into the sump. Oil quality will deteriorate as

heading downhill. It all sounds improbable, but the 2008 prototype handles heavy traffic with ease. The main visible changes to the original 2008 include the adoption of a three-mode, automatic transmission selector in the centre console, a hybrid performance read-out on the instrument cluster and a “charge” status for the central tank on the touchscreen. PSA engineers say that a standard car with the same petrol engine with a manual gearbox would return about 47mpg in city conditions. This prototype manages between 80-90mpg. Even in this early form,

the car is smooth and easy to drive, and it is hard to tell when the full 29bhp is being added by the hydraulic drive. Unfortunately, a production car with the Hybrid Air transmission is at least 3½ years away, unless a huge investor is found shortly. Although it is estimated to be around half the factory cost of a conventional, battery-electric hybrid transmission (as well as being around 15kg lighter), sources say the company will not commit to the technology unless it is rolled out on millions of B and C-segment cars each year. Aside from the big investment required to bring the system to market, it is easy to detect PSA’s fear that, if the company went it alone, the technology would become redundant. But, as they point out, Hybrid Air does without batteries and electric motors, both of which are dependent on the extraction of rare-earth metals. Hybrid Air is simple, seemingly robust and based on well-established technology. It just needs at least one other big carmaker to be attracted.

a result of this and the level will rise. It is important that you check that the oil level does not increase above the maximum level on the dipstick as diesel engines can run on excess engine oil – often to the point of destruction. If you ignore the warning light and keep driving in a relatively slow, stop/start pattern, soot loading will continue to build up until around 75%, when you can expect to see other dashboard warning lights come on, too. At this point, driving at speed alone will not be enough and you will have to take the car to a garage for regeneration. Check the handbook If you buy a car with

a DPF, it’s important to read the relevant section of the vehicle handbook so that you understand exactly what actions to take if the warning light illuminates and how, if at all, your driving style may need to be adjusted to ensure maximum DPF efficiency and life. In most cases there is only a relatively short time between the DPF being partially blocked and becoming so blocked that it requires manual regeneration. Most garages and main dealers should have computers capable of forcing the car to regenerate the DPF filter, or if that fails they should be able to clean the DPF manually.

THE Cyder C Drinks all round… it’s Cyder Cup time again! THE Cyder Cup is back this weekend - and if it’s anything like last year, it will be another day to remember!

Defending champions Oasis Fm will be out to retain the cup they narrowly won from Blacktower Fm. This unique event has a two-man Texas Scramble format with Ryder Cup scoring. Every single hole counts, and the competition is fierce! The players are split into two teams and are paired in a match with similar handicap golfers to create the perfect team event. Oasis Fm are again captained by breakfast DJ Roscoe and Chris Elkington, while Blacktower Fm will be led by Adi Benson and Ally Kerr. Ally told us: “We may have lost narrowly last year but that’s not gonna happen again. Being Northern Irish, you get use to losing at football or rugby or dominos. “But not at Golf! So I can assure you, Blacktower Fm will be lifting the Cyder Cup on

Normally, I’m rushing around organising my own events, so it will be nice to just play and enjoy the golf on Sunday.”

Sunday

afternoon.” Roscoe countered “I think Ally has started on the cider a little early. If he had Rory McIlroy or Darren Clarke, then maybe. But I’ve seen his team line-up and we have nothing to fear at all. It will be another easy Oasis Fm win.” This year’s event has been boosted by a star

name. Sky Sports legend and Tenerife regular Chris Kamara will be playing! As we go to press, it’s still unclear which team he will be playing for as the bribes and brown envelopes are still being passed around. Kammy said: “It’s something different and the format sounds great! I’m really looking forward to playing.

This year, the tournament is being played at Golf Costa Adeje, which opened in October 1998. The course has already hosted the BMW championship in 1999 and the Spanish Open in April 2003, when Englishman Kenneth Ferrie won. Another big event staged there was the Spanish Ladies Open, which graced the course in April 2005 and 2008. This beautifullydesigned course, with 27 holes, has a fullydeveloped 18-hole championship course and a separate ninehole course - Los Lagos. Golf Costa Adeje golf course was designed by renowned golf architect Pepe Gancedo. The layout of the fairways blends perfectly with the

natural forms of the terrain, which, along with the clever use of 5,000 metres of stone walls from former agricultural terracing, make this a very interesting and challenging course for both new and lowhandicap players. The main championship golf course, which is being used for Sunday’s Cyder Cup has a total length of 6,203 metres, par 72 with six par 5s between 519-477m, six par 4s between 420367 m and six par 3s between 220-118m. The Cyder Cup gets underway at 9am with a shotgun start and matches on all 18 holes. Afterwards, the players will enjoy the legendary buffet and drinks before the presentation.

Palms hand it to Warriors! FRIDAY’S Division 2 matches included a couple of league newcomers playing out a local derby on Golf del Sur. Waterfall Warriors have had a strong start to the campaign and could go close in the title race. So their short trip around the corner to face Palms Pool Bar didn’t appear to be difficult. Wrong! A sparkling

performance from the hosts, which included a maximum from captain Dale, left the Warriors reeling in a 6-2 defeat. The Bar also clocked up six points with victory over The Rebels, and Phoenix Flights put five past the Playgirls. Barracuda Hunters’ win was notable for a first 180 by visiting Spear Chuckers’ Dick Barton. Well done buddy!

Division 1 outfit Trap Door are bottom of the league, mostly because they have four games in hand. They did, however, cause a slight upset as they went to table-toppers Gaffers A and beat them 5-3. That gave the Playboys a chance to narrow the gap a little, and they duly obliged by thrashing Emerald Lounge 7-1. Third-place Chipeque

whitewashed La Caña Lancers, while the Shamrocks had a comfortable win over Picasso’s. Nautas beat the Nadas 5-3, which echoed the same winning margin for Sundowners, at home to Clouseaus. Target Army still lead the way in the Premier league after a regulation success at Vikings Ensecan. But they will be looking nervously over their

shoulders at Bar 180 A, who are now up to third spot, courtesy of their 8-0 hammering of Gaffers B. The match was notable because Tom didn’t hit a maximum! But Mitch did hit one for Phoenix Bar as they took all the spoils at Inkspots. The high checkout (150) in this section almost fell to La Cana Pirates’ Dave, as he took out a handsome 148 during a

home win over Bar 180 B. Bar 180 D skipper Jamie was also on the high-finish trail with a nice 129 in a tied match at Target Titans. The highest checkout in each Division is sponsored by Direct Telecom. We take a break from league action this Friday as we do battle in singles knockout competition. Good luck to all players.

EZE group darts stars are back in the groove EZE group darts aces Simon Whitlock and James Wade are enjoying a sizzling start to the summer after claiming big wins on the professional tour.

The signs are looking good for the pair ahead of the prestigious World Matchplay, which takes place later this month in Blackpool. Whitlock clinched his first title of the year with victory at the Players Championship 12 in Coventry, where

he defeated Wade in the final to secure the winner’s cheque. Wade then continued his impressive form by claiming his first tournament victory of the year with a brilliant European Tour triumph in Gibraltar. With the EZE groupsponsored stars on a hot streak, the dynamic duo both fancy their chances at the World Matchplay. Former European champion Whitlock, currently fourth in the world rankings, said: “I’m really happy with my form lately, and my next tar-

get is to win another Major.” Seven-time Major winner Wade has also set his sights on another big-time success, with a repeat of his 2007 triumph at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens firmly on his radar. “I feel like I’m back,” said Wade, who has regained his fifth-place standing in the rankings. “I’ve got that winning feeling again and I’m determined not to lose it. Winning is a habit and once it’s gone, it is a hard one to get back. “But I felt it had been

coming before I won in Gibraltar, and the timing is fantastic ahead of the World Matchplay.” He added: “Blackpool is my favourite event and I normally do well there, so I’m hoping to bring another big title home and continue to pay back the fantastic support I have from EZE group.” Both Whitlock and Wade are in action on the opening night of the World Matchplay next Saturday (19th July), and the entire tournament is being televised live on Sky Sports.

Brazil Mullered by mighty Germany!

SUNDAY’S World Cup Final will be contested by Germany and Argentina after two contrasting semi-finals.

My predictions for the teams who would make the quarter-finals were almost 100%, I got seven out of eight, but when it came to who would progress to the semifinals, I was back to my old self, with one out of four! I thought Columbia would beat Brazil, and if it were not for a little, let’s call it creative refereeing, they might well have done. France had looked good and I fancied them against what I thought at that point was an ordinary German team, and Belgium were in with a chance against a mediocre Argentina team. But what do I know? Holland were the only ones I got right, but even that took penalties for them to progress against plucky Costa Rica. In the last four, Brazil had the hopes of a nation resting on their

shoulders, even though they were without captain Thiago Silva and golden boy Neymar. A nation expected a place in the final, but the Germans hadn’t read the script and what followed was World Cup history. It was one of those moments that you will always remember where you were when you watched the game, along the lines of JFK getting shot and Princess Di’s death. People have asked me whether Germany were really that good, or was it that Brazil were that bad? Actually, it was a little of both. I said from the opening game that Brazil would not

win the World Cup with their defence and goalkeeper, and against the Germans they came unstuck in the most spectacular fashion. But it wasn’t German efficiency. They played with a quick tempo, slick passing and flair. You could see it was a performance that just clicked, all the stars aligned and, with a footballing masterclass, they dispatched the Brazilians in a 26-minute period. They could have played the second half with just a keeper and a couple of defenders and Brazil would still not have got back into the game - it was just one of those nights. The scoreline will be recorded as 7-1, but if the Germans had reached double figures it would still have been seen as a fair result. Then we came to the second semi-final, between Argentina and Holland and, after the previous night’s action, this game had a lot to live up to. Would we see the real Argentina? Would it be an all-European final? I would love to wax lyrical about the game,

but it was a turgid affair with both teams looking tired and jaded and neither side wanting to attack. Extra time and penalties seemed inevitable, and that is what we ended up with. The Dutch had already been involved in a shoot-out but Van Gaal didn’t change keepers this time and he has since come out and said that there were players who refused to take a penalty. That being the case, the Dutch team were on a hiding to nothing from the first penalty, taken by Vlaar and saved. That set the tone, and Argentina got on with the job and progressed. So we have two more games to look forward to. 3rd-place ply-off Brazil v Holland I doubt either team are particularly looking forward to this, especially not the Brazilians who, I am sure, would have rather disappeared on holiday. But FIFA insist that we need a 3rd and 4th-placed team, so tomorrow night (Saturday), they will face off against each

other, and I doubt the teams will be recognisable. This is where the squad players will get their chance to play a game in the finals; it gives those players a chance to maybe impress the manager for future internationals Prediction: Holland 2014 World Cup Final Germany v Argentina It all comes down to this, and it’s just typical that the final throws up two teams who are just not supported by us English. I suppose though, when push comes to shove, we have to throw our weight behind our European counterparts, and I’ll be seeking out a decent Bier Keller in which to watch the game. Germany will be looking to replicate their semi-final form and Klose will be hoping to add to his tally of 16 goals, as he is now the World Cup’s leading alltime scorer. They have a solid defence and can happily build from the back. They are creative in midfield and are capable of scoring goals throughout the team. Their confidence will be

sky-high and, in football, that counts as an extra player. The game cannot come soon enough for them because they will be anxious to get back on the pitch. I can see them going for an early goal, and should they succeed, we could see the floodgates opening again. I actually tipped Argentina to win the tournament, but every time I’ve seen them play, I have been underwhelmed. A lot has been written comparing Messi with Maradona in terms of winning the trophy for the team. But he has been very quiet and we have seen flashes of his brilliance. If Argentina are to have any chance, they need him to be at his very best. But you just know the Germans will have planned how to keep him quiet, and I suspect that plan is called Bastian Schweinsteiger. Argentina have a hard task ahead of them, and will have had one day fewer to rest. But I don’t believe that will make any difference because it is hard to look past the Germans winning. Prediction: Germany

Mark states his Final case WITH the Direct Telecom Pool League done and dusted, the preliminary games in the Singles competition were held on Tuesday. They were hosted at four venues: Phoenix Bar, Dreamers, Gaffers and The Treehouse and there were one or two shocks on the night. The Treehouse looked on paper to have the strongest group, with Ash, Fritzel, Gav, Tony and Adi making up the

players. But Mark, on his home table, fought through to the final where he met the Peacocks’ Johnny, after both players had seen off some strong players. Home advantage triumphed and Mark qualified as the table winner, while Johnny joins the qualifying group on Finals night. Jambo was favourite to progress at the Phoenix Bar, and he

didn’t disappoint, easing through to the final match. Home player Bubbles reached the semi-finals but came unstuck against Craig, from the Peacocks. Jambo was on fine form in the final and went through to the seeded group on Finals night, with Craig earning a qualifying spot. Dreamers saw some interesting games, with many of them being

close in terms of separating players. Come the final, though, and the two team captains from Phoenix Bar, Harry and Geoff faced each other, And Harry took the bragging rights on this one, but we are not sure how. He was 2-1 down and produced a stunning fluke on the black to level at 2-2. The final places were wrapped up at Gaffers and again, it was close

in the early games. But Paul, from League champions Hammers A, met James, from James Place, in the final and proved unplayable. He was just too strong for James, winning 3-0. Presentation and Finals night is on Tuesday, 22nd July at Palms Bar in Torviscas Alto. You are all welcome to come down and watch and show your support. It will be a very good

night. Finals’ Night, Singles line-up Seeded players: Graham (Palms B), Roscoe (Palms A), Neil (Gaffers A), Kev (Gaffers A) Table winners: Jambo (Hammers A), Paul (Hammers A), Mark (Treehouse A) & Harry (Phoenix Knights) Runners-up: Geoff (Phoenix Potters), James (James Place), Johnny (Peacocks), Craig (Peacocks)
