Vital North-South link will cut travelling times
THE eagerlyawaited Tenerife ring road will move a stride closer to completion next week when a vital stage of the ambitious development is opened to the public.
The project is grossly over budget - and so much past the original completion date that nobody could agree on when the finished road was meant to open. There are still some large obstacles to overcome before everything is finished, including some costing issues, but progress is being made. The crucial link between La Mancha, which is a kilometre north of Icod de los Vinos and Santiago del Teide, has now been completed, and we understand it will open next Saturday (26th July). Our Cabildo source said: “There are still a couple of things to be signed off before everything is totally finished, but the road will be open by the end of the month.” This stretch has proved to be one of the more problematic pieces of the jigsaw. The topography of the land around Santiago del Teide, which incorporates the Masca region leading to El Ta n q u e , is visually stunning. But it is also a logistical nightmare for a multilane motorway. While the stretch has been nearing completion for a while, a separate problem developed on the easier stretch, from Icod to El Tanque. This section is more than three months
past its completion date - it should have been signed off on 31st March. It is understood that some last-minute changes to the original project have caused the delay on what will be one of the most frequented stretches of the project. One of the jobs delaying the scheme is the integration of the La Vera tunnel, located in Icod, to the central stretch of road. This seems to stem from a disagreement between the contractor and Jose Luis Delgado, Te n e r i f e ’ s Minister of Roads. Apparently, the problem was not the road itself but the installation of a pedestrian walkway in the Los Moriscos region. A change of route would cost 300,000 euros, and neither side was prepared to pay for this. Also, there were a few infrastructure issues in the town of Icod,
which took some time to resolve. And to date, the stretch of the road between Icod and El Tanque has cost over 130 million euros. But the opening of this new motorway will have huge economic and social benefits for both the North and the South of Tenerife. In an instant, the journey times will be slashed - and it is believed that a trip from Adeje to Puerto de la Cruz will take less than 45 minutes. Currently, that journey involves going up the TF1 to Santa Cruz before switching to the TF5. It adds many kilometres to the trip and takes a good 80 minutes on average. The greatly-reduced journey time really does open up the entire Island. One excursion owner told Canarian Weekly: “This is the news lots of us have been waiting to hear. If it’s only an hour from Puerto to Las Americas in a coach, all our trips and night excursions are suddenly available to a new market. “It also means that having a night out in the North, or a lazy weekend away, is so much easier.”
While the opening of this “ring road” section is great news, there is some bad news on the stretch which, in theory, should have been opened a long time ago. The “southern section” of the ring, between Adeje and Santiago del Teide, is no closer to being opened. And it is widely believed to be at least 18 months away from being fully completed. There are many problems. Funding is the big elephant in the room, the link to set up a new port is dragging its feet, and there are still problems in getting the Erques viaduct sorted. Juan Medina, CEO of the Road Infrastructure, said this week that the new link between Fonsalia and Guía de Isora “has only just started”. He added: “By this point, we expected that the project would be ready by the end of the first quarter of this year.” There have been problems between Santiago del Teide and Tejina, said Medina, because “it was necessary to move a major power line”. Jose Luis Delgado criticised the South delays, saying: “It will be completed by the first quarter of next year at the earliest. This part will take about four or five months but it depends on a number of factors. “Also, we have to get the Erques viaduct sorted, so everything is at a critical stage. Until all that is done, you cannot engage in the stretch between Adeje and Tejina.” The Canarian Government put another four million euros into the pot recently for this job, but more than one million will help finance the viaduct project. Spiralling costs, unrealistic expectations and a plethora of political arguments has hampered the project no end. But at least there is some light at the end of the tunnel, and next week’s opening of the new section is a welcome boost. Day trips to Puerto may fast become the fashion this summer!

BBC sitcom will be shot in the Canaries A MAJOR new television sitcom will be filmed in Gran Canaria this year.
BBC One has confirmed that 75% of Woody will be shot in the Canaries in September and October. The six-parter, set on a fictional Spanish island, features comedian Bradley Walsh, who has recently been in Law & Order: UK, and Fonejacker star Kayvan Novak. Novak plays an undercover reporter called Woody, who is forced to go on the run from the British authorities after being set up by a corrupt newspaper editor. He turns to the one man he can trust, his former mentor at the newspaper, Brutus, played by Walsh, now an ex-pat living a quiet life and running a restaurant. Initially Brutus and Woody don’t see eye to eye, but they soon start working together. Woody takes on a series of investigations on the island and, together with Brutus, they start to make their mark on the island, with hilarious consequences. Respected comedy writers Neil Webster (8 out of 10 cats) and Charlie Skelton (Argumental, A League Of Their Own) are behind the show. Webster will share directing duties with The Inbetweeners’ director Ben Palmer, and the programme is being made by Happy Tramp Productions. Walsh said: “I can’t wait to start working on Woody. To be working with Kayvan again is great. To be working for the BBC, the iconic home of British sitcom is, for me personally, a lifelong ambition fulfilled. To say I’m thrilled is an understatement.” The order for a six-episode series follows a successful pilot, which was shot last year. Kayvan Novak said: “Woody is the part I have dreamed of playing since I was
a kid. That and Boba Fett.” Shane Allen, Controller of BBC Comedy Commissioning, has high hopes for the show. “Woody is a really ambitious, colourful, feelgood comedy with two lovable rogues at the heart of it in Kayvan and Bradley,” he said. “They’ll bring sunshine and laughs to BBC One.” Ben Palmer added: “Woody is a silly, bighearted piece of escapism that all the fam-
ily can enjoy. As well as Kayvan’s incredible talents as a character comedian, we can’t wait to let the double act of Kayvan and Bradley loose on the world. And we get to work in the sun!” It is understood that most of the filming will take place in Gran Canaria, and location scouting is well underway. The central location is said to be based in Puerto Mogan and Maspalomas, and there will also be some filming
in the zoo at Palmitos Park, also in the south of Gran Canaria, The BBC has pencilled in a provisional airing for February. José Miguel Bravo de Laguna. Gran Canaria Cabildo President, was delighted with the announcement, which was made with the Gran Canaria Film Commission. He said: “We will provide logistical support to this great project, and this shows that we can be a world leader in the audio-visual in-
dustry.” At Tuesday’s press conference, Neil Webster was joined by production manager Karen Norton, local producer Denis Pedregosa and the Cabildo head. Webster said: “We’re over the moon that BBC One has given us the opportunity to bring the lovable, lunatic Woody to life. It’s like all my Fletch/Magnum/Minder dreams have come true at once.” Webster, when asked whether the ‘island” would be called Gran Canaria, said: “We are not sure because, as it is written now it’s an island without trace. But everyone in England, the press and viewers will know that this is Gran Canaria.” Meanwhile, from the production Gran Babieka, Miguel Ruz said there will be a distribution that will keep track of the series to other territories worldwide. Denis Pedregosa, asked about the tax incentives on such a project, said: “It has a massive importance to the Canary audio-visual productions. It’s very important, and the favourable tax
deduction for the production is a very powerful tool to sell the island as a set and attract more projects.” The Cabildo President was equally excited because it places a special emphasis on the island. “We have here a miniature continent,” he said. “We’ve a natural set to attract the filming of movies, drama series and audio-visual productions of any kind. “It is a strong and firm commitment of the Corporation to convert the island into the set of film productions. We are in excellent condition, both climatic and technical. “This kind of project which is forming more and more on the islands, is creating a “film culture” - and this is very important.” The BBC project is the latest in what is now becoming a long line of filming on the Archipelago. The Clash of the Titans film a few years ago paved the way and already, film companies and now production houses are moving in. Ron Howard filmed his latest film here, and even the Belgian sitcom Familie has been shot here this year.
Thousands pay homage to sailors’ Patron Saint ONE of the most important traditions on the archipelago saw a mammoth 130,000 people flock to Plaza del Charco in Puerto de la Cruz for the arrival of the Virgen del Carmen and San Telmo vessel. Organising Councillor Juan Carlos Marrero described the festivities as magnificent. “Some things were improved over the last year and the influx was greater.” he said. “It was an amazing response because, in recent years, there has been some trouble during the event.” But Marrero said it all went off peacefully “The
city feared there could be what visitors experienced in 2011 and 2012” he admitted. “But people had fun and were respecting each other. “The behaviour of our people has been exemplary, and I want to thank the citizens of Puerto de la Cruz.
The attitude was noteworthy.” The festivities marked the Patron Saint of Sailors’ Day, paying respect to the Virgin del Carmen. It’s a centuries-old tradition, involving lots of colour and song. At the height of the celebrations, more than 50,000 people were singing Ave Maria. The Mayor, Marcos Brito, who was delighted with the entire day, said: “The whole area of the Plaza del Charco was full of terraces with tables and chairs, and the people all enjoyed themselves.” Police chief Luis Miguel Rodríguez added: “The
holidays this year were very safe. We have eradicated all evils of past holidays. “There were no water guns, no water bombs and no major altercations. No water from balconies was thrown, and I hope that all that behaviour has been consigned to history.” Previous years’ celebrations saw some overrefreshed youths and sailors engage in running “battles”, which had a knock-on effect, sparking some real fights. This caused a tense atmosphere, but it seems the bad apples have decided to mend their ways.

Inflation kept in check THE Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose by just 0.1% year-on-year in June - one tenth of a point less than in May.
That’s the figure according to data published by the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE). This slight moderation in the rate of inflation corresponds mainly to foodstuffs and energy products. It refers particularly to electricity and certain food items such as oils and fats, fresh fruit and potatoes, which continue to balance out the strong rise recorded last year. Non-energy industrial goods have maintained their annual rate, while services have increased slightly. The general CPI rate in June has not changed from the previous month. The year-on-year rate posted by the price of unprepared foodstuffs fell by 1.1% in June to -3.8%. This moderation is because of various items, such as potatoes and fresh fruit. If you discount the strong increase posted a year ago as a result of the adverse weather conditions in the second quarter of 2013, the annual rate has moderated significantly. The annual rate of fresh potatoes and potato preparations has fallen by 9.8% and fresh fruit by 4.1% to -19.7% and -9.6% respectively. In general, the majority of the items under the heading of fresh foods have seen a moderation in their annual rates. The price of energy products recorded a year-on-year rate of 2.6% in June - 0.4% less than in May. This decrease down to the electricity tariff because, in that month, consumers were reimbursed with the amounts overcharged in the first six months of the year. The annual rate of this item has fallen from 9.4% to 7.1%, with a monthly fall of 2.1%. The main component - solid and liquid fuels - rose by 0.3% year-onyear to 1.1%, a trend which is in line with the
increase in petrol prices. Underlying inflation maintained a flat rate in June for the second consecutive month. This stability, because of the slight increase in services, has been offset by a downward trend in prepared foodstuffs. Non-energy industrial goods have also maintained a flat rate yearon-year. Services posted an increase in annual inflation of 0.1% in June to 0.3%, largely through the heading of interurban public transport, which increased its annual rate by 0.8% to 4.3%, as a result of a new hike in air transport prices (3.1%). Tourism and the hotel and catering industry maintained their annual rate of inflation at 0.5%. Prices of non-energy industrial goods fell by 0.5% year-on-year, the same as in the previous month. Prepared foodstuffs, including beverages and tobacco, moderated their annual rate in June by 0.4% to 0.2%. This downward trend can be largely explained by the heading of oils and fats, which posted an annual rate of -14.4%, which was - 2.6% lower than in May. And, to a lesser extent, by the lower annual change of other headings such as sugar, alcoholic beverages and milk. The CPI remained stable in June against the previous month, through the lower prices of prepared foodstuffs and non-energy
industrial goods, which fully offset the higher prices of services and fresh foodstuffs. There was no change in energy products. Fresh foodstuffs increased by 0.4% in the month, while prepared foodstuffs fell by 0.3%, mainly as a result of cheaper prices of potatoes (-4.3%), fresh legumes and vegetables (-3.3%), oils and fats (-2.7%) sugar (-1.8%), and a 5.4% rise in fruit. Services increased by 0.3%, mainly through tourism and the hotel and catering industry (0.7%). And, within this heading, by organised travel (4.3%) plus hotels and other accommodation (3.6%), as well as inter-urban public transport (1.6%), particularly air transport (3.1%) and car insurance (1.9%). There was no change in the price of energy products in June, because of the 0.8% growth in its main item - solid and liquid fuels - which was wholly offset by the fall in the electricity tariff (-2.1%). The price of non-energy industrial goods fell by 0.4% month-onmonth, mainly through clothing and footwear (down by 1.3%) in anticipation of the summer sales. Four of the 17 autonomous regions posted a higher year-on-year rate of inflation than the national average in June. The highest inflation was posted in the Balearic Islands and the Basque Country (both at 0.5%), followed by
Catalonia (0.4%) and Galicia (0.3%). The CPI in Castile-Leon matched the national average (0.1%). The remaining autonomous regions posted rates of inflation below the national average: Aragon, the Region of Valencia, Madrid and La Rioja with flat rates and the rest with negative
inflation; particularly worthy of mention being Extremadura as the most deflationist autonomous region (-0.5%). The year-on-year CPI rate at constant taxes stood at 0.1% in June, the same as the general CPI rate, 0.1% lower than the previous month. Underlying inflation at constant tax rates posted a flat rate. The year-on-year rate for energy stood at 2.7%, compared with 3% in May, while the year-on-year rate for unprepared foodstuffs was -3.8% (-2.7% in May). Within the core of underlying inflation at constant taxes, the price of non-energy industrial goods was -0.5% year-on-year, prepared foodstuffs rose by 0.1%, compared with 0.5% the previous month, while the price of services increased by 0.3%, which was just 0.1% higher than in May. The INE also published the harmonised CPI (HCPI) for June, the annual rate of which is flat (0.2 points
lower than in the previous month). When compared with the annual rate estimated by Eurostat for the Eurozone as a whole (0.5%), the inflation differential remains positive for Spain at 0.5%, which was 0.2% less than in May. In summary, inflation moderated to 0.1% last month because of the price trends of some of the most volatile items of the CPI, such as nonprepared foodstuffs, and energy prices, particularly the electricity tariff. This price containment is being welcomed as it will facilitate the ongoing wage moderation, which will have a positive impact on the competitiveness of domestic production and on exports. Similarly, it will enable the purchasing power of wages and pensions to be maintained, which will foster domestic consumption and have a knock-on effect on fostering the recovery in production and employment.

Bermudez to run again SANTA Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez will be standing for office again next year.
He received the unanimous support of his Canary Coalition party to continue his reign in 2015. His nomination came as no surprise, but it was rumoured that he might want a return to more national politics. On Monday the Local Assembly of CC members in Santa Cruz voted to recognise Bermudez officially as their candidate for the capital’s municipality. There was some bick-
ering in the ranks earlier in the year about Bermudez, with some senior figures suggesting he should step up to a wider platform. But once the Mayor indicated he was happy to continue, the party closed ranks. He was given a unanimous support, with no votes against him! Mind you, he was the only candidate! Bermudez said: “I feel supported, and not only from my party and its members, but also by many supporters who came because they believe in my project for Santa Cruz. And this project is for everyone.” Bermudez’s confirma-
tion begins what will be a long race, and he said: “We have 84 districts in this capital, so there is a lot of work to do to push across our message and our belief in the project. “We must keep our feet on the ground because we have work to do. All I can say, with humility, is that I received the unanimous support to me and my project part. There must be rigorous work for the good of all the residents of Santa Cruz.” Bermudez, who has held office for three years, was parachuted into the Mayor’s job after his time as the Cabildo’s Tourism Minister. But it has not been
the easiest of rides for him. Harsh budget cuts, high employment and a need to modernise have led to some tough decisions. There is a feeling that he has been strong and that he is doing a good job. But there are still some obstacles to overcome, and his re-election is no shoo-in. His councillors often seem at war, and there have been a few public spats recently which have not been addressed. properly. But with his party’s backing, and the election ticket seemingly bullet-proof, he does have the time and now, the focus, to sort things out.

New King gets down to work KING Felipe VI attended his first National Security Council meeting this week - his first taste of the serious business of being head of state.
He joined Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, together with the VicePresident, the Foreign Affairs Minister, the Defence Minister and the Home Affairs Minister, among others. The King received the Council’s first annual report, which reviews the work carried out since it was set up in May 2013. The report is ratified at the meeting before being presented to Parliament. The National Security Council is a collegiate governmental body whose missions are principally to assist the PM in steering National Security Policy. It also promotes the National Security Strategy, which prevents, manages and co-ordinates crisis management efforts. This relatively new Council is now in its sec-
ond year and a report of the last 12 months has been drafted on the main actions undertaken. In particular, discussions took place on the progress made regarding the National CyberSecurity Strategy and the National Maritime Security Strategy. Meetings of this Council are called by the PM
at least once every two months. This is the sixth session of the National Security Council, and the first anniversary of its constituent meeting, which took place under the leadership of King Juan Carlos. Members of the National Security Council are: Mariano Rajoy, Prime

Heatwave? Just get the wellies out SO Britain finally has some summer weather. I loved the way Sky News were carrying a strapline on Thursday saying that the UK was hotter than Hawaii.
That was true. Mind you, it was midnight in Hawaii! It took all of three seconds for the dogooders to come racing out with their sound bytes: warning against heat exhaustion, warning about skin cancer, warning about global warming. All I know about the UK is that when “they” start bleating and the Met Office says we should stay indoors to avoid heat-stroke, you get the wellies and umbrella out. Trust me, there will be an old man with a beard chopping down trees in the UK next week. Closer to home, have you driven on Golf del Sur? For the first time since Liverpool were champions of England,
the roads have been repaired. Well some of them, but it’s a start. Maybe this will encourage more Mayors to find the money to spruce up our everdegrading road surfaces. I’d hate to be on two wheels on some of whatever passes for tarmac. Years ago, they did some major repairs to the roads in San Eugenio, and the trench was as deep as something you read about from the Somme. Anyway one night, the legend that is Dorian complete with full Gary Glitter costume, and after having a “few” - fell in this “moat”. It took him about 10 minutes to clamber out, by which time half the occupants in St Eugene’s bar had nipped out to watch the event! I’m sure all the cyclists can tell a similar story. Finally, a big thank-you to everyone who played and to those who organised the Cyder Cup. It was a brilliant day and one I will always remember. Especially for the German version of Vindaloo!

Las Caleta’s ‘jewel’ will inspire a wave of surfers THE La Caleta wave is something really special - “the jewel in the Canarian crown for surfers”, according to Canarian Surf Federation President Ángel Lobo.
He was announcing details of the V Bodyboard Championship, a round of which will be staged at La Caleta this summer, at a press conference. It is one of several rounds held throughout the Canaries on a weekly basis - waves permitting - some time between July to September, and will obviously depend on sea conditions. Competitors will be advised by email in midweek if they get the green light. The overall results determine the final rankings, and are relevant to next year’s national circuit.
The categories in La Caleta are the Open “singular”, in which the surfer stays lying down on the board throughout the ride, and the “drop-knee”, which is self-explanatory. More than 100 surfers have competed in previous years, and the organisers are again expecting the same numbers. Local surfers can also participate in parallel competitions, and further information is available from the federation web page: www. fcsurf.es. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga can’t wait the the La Caleta showdown, saying he will “defend and protect that ‘jewel in the crown’. Local Sports Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera spoke of the good working relationship Adeje Council has with the Canarian Surf Federation at sporting and training levels. Ángel Lobo thanked
the council for its support, saying it was “another example of Adeje’s backing for sport in general, and for surf and bodyboard events in particular. “Adeje is an ideal place to practise these sports, because of its geographic location,” he added. The Mayor said he was at the conference to add his personal support to the event. “We give added value to sports along our coast, not too surprising perhaps, given that we are a tourist destination bordered by the sea,” he said. “It is also important for the local population as it contributes to their health and well-being.” Ángel Lobo and Adolfo Alonso both stressed the high level of Canarians doing well on the world stage in this sport. “There is nowhere else in the world with such a high number of topclass representatives
in the sport - between 20-25 people from the Canaries,” said Adolfo Alonso. “Perhaps it doesn’t have the kind of international recognition it should through a lack of sponsors, but when international events take place here, it is Canarians who are on the winning podium.” The Sports chief also mentioned with pride the two local worldclass surfers - Diego Cabrera and Alexandra Rinder. Finally the Mayor used the occasion to remind people of the high returns from investing in people in the sporting, cultural or social arenas. “This Council will continue to support and design these kind of initiatives, even if new laws attempt to restrict us doing so,” he said. “That’s because we know they are a direct benefit to the quality of life and well-being of our residents.”

Siam Park voted the world’s best! JUST six years after opening, Siam Park is officially the world’s No.1 waterpark.
The Travellers’ Choice awards, created by TripAdvisor, honour the best sights and attractions in the world, according to the views and recommendations of the travellers themselves. There were 300 winners for this year’s election, honouring parks in Asia, Canada, China, Europe, India, South America, the South Pacific, the UK and the US. And the No.1 award went to Siam Park, voted the best water park in the world. These awards are based on the quality and quantity of millions of comments and views,
prove the recognition of our visitors. “I thank all our park workers, and I hope for the same success with our upcoming project in Gran Canaria.” Wolfgang Kiessling, President of Loro Parque, added: “I have been in Tenerife for 42 years and this award is much appreciated.” Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodriguez Fraga said: “Siam Park was always an ambitious project, right from the beginning. And here we are! To be recognised with this global award adds value to Costa Adeje and Tenerife. “Great attractions like Siam Park help people all around the world to recognise us, and so this is important for our destination.”

She said: “TripAdvisor had more than 260 million visitors worldwide last year, with over 50 million new opinions. This guarantees a level of quality which sets this award apart from any other.” Siam Park boss Cristophe Kiessling accepted the award, saying: “We take great pride in this award and the fact that we are No.1 in the world. “We say thank you for the praise, and we welcome the suggestions to help us to improve on our work. Civil Rights groups see red over new demo law THE Spanish Government has come under fire from Civil Rights groups after approving new fines for unauthorised demonstrations.
Following warnings from judicial authorities, Madrid watered down measures from an earlier bill. But the Government has maintained tough penalties for non-sanctioned demos - if they
are seen as a threat to security. Critics have branded the reform repressive. But Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz insisted: “It will guarantee greater security for citizens with greater legal security … and protect the rights and freedoms of citizens.” He addressed a news conference after the Popular Party Government approved the latest draft at last Friday’s cabinet meeting. It now heads to parliament,
where it holds a strong majority. The new law sets fines of up to 600,000 euros for unofficial demos in public buildings which pose a threat to people, or disrupt public services. And fines of up to 30,000 euros will be levied for unauthorised demos near the national or regional parliaments – again, if they are deemed to be a serious security risk. Spain’s recent years of recession and tough economic reforms have
sparked mass street demonstrations. Some rallies near parliament in Madrid boiled over into clashes between protesters and police. The new law also imposes a fine of up to 30,000 euros for obstructing authorities in their work - as many protesters have done in Spain while trying to stop bailiffs evicting poor home-owners. The law also doubles the old 300-euro fine for climbing public buildings and monuments
without permission - a regular occurrence by the Greenpeace environmental campaign group. And true to form, its members protested last Friday by scaling a 90-metre tower near the offices of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, unfurling a banner reading: “No to the gag law”. The Government said the law on demonstrations “aims only to sanction violent, aggressive or coercive actions”. And it stressed in a
statement: “The law expressly protects the right to demonstrate.” For all that, a protest group called We Are Not a Crime, campaigning against the reform, vowed to demonstrate in central Madrid this evening (Friday) in anger at the proposals. “The Government is trying to create a false impression of insecurity in society to justify toughening the laws at the expense of curbing citizens’ rights,” it said in a statement.

Magician back behind bars A MAGICIAN, who skipped bail and fled to top holiday resorts in Spain after a failed attempt at robbery last year, was jailed for 14 months on Monday..
Curtis James Watson, wearing a monkey mask, demanded cash in March from a terrified shopworker at Booze Busters in his home-town Macclesfield, Chester Crown Court heard. But the terrified woman refused to hand over any money and he left empty-handed, vowing to return later, unaware that he’d been caught on CCTV. The 23-year-old was arrested and confessed to the crime. But while on bail, he fled to Tenerife, Marbella and Barcelona, working as a street magician. He spent months performing his magic outside the clubs and bars in Las Americas, making a decent living by entertaining tourists. But police, having established his DNA from the black drawstring bag he discarded after walking away from the off-licence, traced him using his Twitter and Facebook accounts. He was eventually picked up by the Guardia Civil on a European Arrest Warrant and extradited back to the UK. Watson, from Macclesfield, admitted attempted robbery and failing to surrender. Judge Ian Trigger said: “For all I know, you are in the Magic Circle, but you weren’t acting as a magician when you went into that off-licence. “You went there in a premeditated attempt to steal as much cash as you could find and, in doing so, caused anxiety, at the least, to a lone female shop assistant. “She resolutely refused and then you moved towards the counter area. She stood her ground and you fled without any
money. “You took yourself off, not on a magic carpet, but by plane, and you remained there to pay down a debt.” John Chukwuemeka, prosecuting, said: “In his police interview Watson told police he had planned to rob a bookmakers, but decided the off-licence would be easier. “He said he was a professional magician and gambler who needed money to go to work in Spain.” Watson even bragged about his fabulous new lifestyle on Facebook, saying: “I can almost guarantee you will be stuck in your dead-end job with no drive or ambition. I’m in Marbella! It’s amazing.” He was eventually picked up by Spanish police on a European Arrest Warrant and extradited back to the UK last month. Watson, of Kendal Road, Macclesfield, admitted attempted robbery and failing to surrender at Chester Crown Court. Sarah Badrawry, defending Watson, said: “He knew about the hearing but went to Spain. It was his intention to come back. He owed people money and one of them was a bar owner in Spain who said he could work it off. “This person took the defendant’s passport so he wouldn’t leave. Since then, he has set up his own magician business and it is doing well.” Weeks before the incident, Watson told
his local newspaper that he had performed tricks for various stars. They included former Manchester City player Mario Balotelli, exworld champion boxer Nigel Benn, actor Ross Kemp and various soap stars. He even posted Facebook pictures of himself with them and, ironically, told the paper he wanted to use his magic skills to help the police catch criminals. But the one piece of magic he simply couldn’t perform was to “disappear” himself. By coincidence Wendy Byrne, manager of Booze Busters, said she was glad of the sentence, adding: “What he did was terrible and we are glad he was jailed. “You simply cannot do things like that to other people and then run off to the sun to do magic.” Oasis Fm DJ Jamie Drew, who also writes Canarian Weekly’s entertainment page, befriended Watson while he performed his magic in downtown Las Americas. “I used to have a drink with him, and we’d sit for hours together, sometimes until 6am,” said Jamie. “He didn’t say much, but he came across as an extremely intelligent man who didn’t suffer fools gladly. “I had no idea about his background, obviously, He was a bit of an introvert, but he came alive when he was doing his magic tricks.”

In praise of the humble banana THE banana industry remains vitally important to the health of the Canarian economy, a new study has revealed this week.
Right now, it’s the most important agricultural activity, both economically and socially, in the Canary Archipelago. Tens of thousands of people are employed either in the primary sector, via growing and packing of produce, or via local markets and, indirectly, via the mainland. Despite the physical and economic constraints, plus limited production and a commercial ceiling of the archipelago’s agricultural potential, banana cultivation has traditionally played an important economic and social
role, which continues right now. One of the reasons justifying its relevance is marked by a clear and strong export growth, which is the basis of the study conducted by the Department of Economics of Institutions, Economic Statis-
tics and Econometrics at the University of La Laguna. The banana industry is one of the few that helps offset the strong dependence in the Canary Islands of tourism. There are other Canary exports of goods and services, but the
banana production remains at the head of the field. In 2013, the importance of the exports is shown by the harvesting of over one million kilos a day, of which 90% is sent to the overseas market. This represents 67% of primary sector exports in the Canaries. Subsequently, these shipments have a direct impact in lowering the cost of goods imported by sea from the main-
land. The data provided by the University of La Laguna’s study shows that the link of the Canary-Peninsula container helps our economy. The containers leaving the Archipelago laden with bananas return here full of imports but at a cheaper price because the travelling costs are greatly reduced. Specifically, the goods being imported from the mainland in containers used for bananas are mostly commodity meats, fresh and frozen fish, dairy products, eggs, fresh fruits and fresh vegetables. One of the conclusions of the study says that the effect of banana exports has resulted in lower prices, and saves us over 30 million euros per year. This is a great saving. Between 2009 and 2012, the price reductions resulting from these containers saw meat around 2, 5% cheaper, while the eggs were 8% less. Fruit and vegetables were around 10% less and there were sim-
ilar savings on most refrigerated goods. This data shows that the banana activity throughout the year has a direct effect on the cost of living in the Canary Islands. The report also shows that in addition to savings in sea freight, exporting bananas represents a powerful client for the cardboard industry and factories of pallets, as well as the packaging industry. It also represents an important part of business for importers of machinery, fertilisers, pesticides, plastics, and the fuel market. The University of La Laguna study found that banana producers disbursed nearly 32 million euros in the acquisition of fertilizers and plant protection products, plus a similar amount for water consumption. In addition, growing and packing materials exceeded 43m euros per year, while repairs and maintenance of infrastructure growing and packing are around 9m.
Conforama customers flood in
MEGA furniture store Conforama has hit the South of Tenerife - and the opening few days can be summed up in one word: MOBBED! The Las Chafiras store was swamped on Wednesday when it first opened its doors. And the following day, at the official opening, customers were queuing to get in.
Conforama’s La Laguna store is the top seller of all its stores in Spain, but already the new one here is matching those figures. At the press invite this week, Manuel Estevez, General Manager
of Conforama Spain and José Miguel Rodriguez, Operations Director of Spain, were welcomed, along with the San Miguel Mayor and other dignitaries. The shop features some amazing bargains and, judging by the first few days, Conforama has another success story on its hands.

Selfie bull-run ‘idiot’ A MAN photographed snapping a selfie just metres from rampaging bulls during Spain’s famous San Fermin festival was labelled an “idiot” on Twitter.
The unknown runner, wearing a bright red sweatshirt, held his phone aloft as three of the half-tonne Pamplona animals charged towards him. The picture was taken during last Friday’s run and, since then, Twitter users have been circulating the hashtag #eltontolmóvil, which means “the idiot with the mobile”. Pamplona police have been hunting the
man - who faces a fine of several thousand euros - because a local law forbids photos while taking part in the dash. It is not known
whether he was injured. The no-pics rule is designed to make the event slightly safer, and to stop people indulging in behaviour that might
hold up other runners. Two Australians and a Spaniard were gored on Monday during the final - and longest - bull run of the festival.
Another four people also needed hospital treatment as the six bulls chased runners down the cobblestone streets in the chaotic, 848-metre dash to the city’s bullring. One bull, named Olivito, separated from the pack and charged one young man repeatedly, lifting him up and pinning him against a wall. Organisers said a 24-year-old Australian man suffered a “light goring” to his right thigh, while a 26-yearold Australian was gored three times - in his thigh, thorax and abdominal area. A 21-year-old Spaniard was also gored in buttocks. The festival’s website said some of the men’s injuries were “serious”
but not life threatening. Last week, a British man was left vomiting blood after suffering four fractured ribs and a punctured lung, having been trampled. An American, who wrote a book on how to survive the bull run, was also injured badly. Bill Hillmann, a 32-year-old from Chicago, was gored twice in the right thigh, according to festival organisers on their website. The encierro, or the Running of the Bulls, dates back to the Middle Ages and highlights daily Pamplona’s San Fermin festival. Many people are injured there each year at the festival, while 15 people are believed to have died since record-keeping began in 1910.
Pope’s ‘paedophile clergy’ row POPE Francis has become embroiled in a controversy about Catholic priests being paedophiles.
He has been quoted as saying that reliable data suggests “about 2%” of clergy in the Catholic Church are paedophiles. The Pope said that abuse of children was like “leprosy” infecting the Church, according to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica. And he pledged to “confront it with the severity it demands”. But a Vatican spokesman has played it down by saying the quotes did not correspond to the Pope’s exact words.
BBC correspondent David Willey, in Rome, says there is often a studied ambiguity in off-thecuff statements by Pope Francis. He wants to show a more compassionate attitude towards Church teaching than his predecessors. But this can sometimes cause consternation among his media advisers, says Mr Willey. He adds: “When is a papal interview not an interview? Sunday’s edition of La Repubblica devotes its first three pages to an account of a conversation between Pope Francis and editor Eugenio Scalfari, which took place last Thursday. “Papal spokesman
Federico Lombardi said in a sharp note that it was not an interview in the normal sense of the word, although he admitted it conveyed the ‘sense and the spirit’ of the conversation. “Mr Scalfari does not use a digital recorder, and Father Lombardi said Pope Francis never checked the accuracy of the interview. “Until now, the Vatican has declined to quantify the extent of clerical sexual abuse scandals in the worldwide Church. Statistics are usually available only for countries in the developed world. In the developing world, information is usually only sketchy.” In the interview, Pope
Francis was quoted as saying that the 2% estimate came from advisers. It would represent around 8,000 priests out of a global number of about 414,000. While the incidence of paedophilia as a psychiatric disorder in the general population is not accurately known, some estimates have put it at less than 5%. “Among the 2% who are paedophiles are priests, bishops and cardinals. Others, more numerous, know but keep quiet. They punish without giving the reason,” Pope Francis was quoted as saying. “I find this state of affairs intolerable.” Many Catholics feel the Church hierarchy
has not taken strict enough action against abusers. Above the interview, La Repubblica ran the headline: “Pope says: Like Jesus, I shall use a stick against paedophile priests.” Vatican spokesman Father Lombardi denied that Pope Francis had said there were cardinals who were paedophiles. Last year, Pope Francis strengthened the Vatican’s laws against child abuse and earlier this month, begged forgiveness from the victims of sexual abuse by priests, during his first meeting with victims since his election. Many survivors of abuse by priests are
angry at what they see as the Vatican’s failure to punish senior officials who have been accused of covering up scandals. Asked in the same La Repubblica interview about the celibacy rule for priests, Pope Francis recalled that it was adopted 900 years after the death of Jesus Christ, and pointed out that the Eastern Catholic Church allows its priests to marry. ”The problem certainly exists, but it is not on a large scale,” he said. “It will need time, but the solutions are there and I will find them.” Father Lombardi also denied that these were the Pope’s exact words.

New profit limit on payday loans FBI nab US fraudster here A FUGITIVE wanted by the FBI for a $1.8 million fraud against the US Government has been arrested in Puerto de la Cruz.
National Police agents co-ordinated with the FBI and the US Embassy in Madrid to nab the unnamed man. He is believed to have used the identities of dead people to receive tax refunds and was arrested in 2013 in Salt Lake City for the crimes, which took place between January and July 2013. Together with other accomplices, he ob-
tained the names and Social Security numbers of dead people and presented statements to tax officials to claim a reimbursement. The man filed false tax returns, requesting refunds of over 1.3 million, and was, ultimately, paid more than half-amillion dollars before the fraud unravelled. On 18th June, the US District Court issued an arrest warrant based on the indictment of the 19 charges against him. Once given the international indictment issued by the US authorities, investigators learned that he had fled America and was living in a Puerto de la Cruz apartment.
CAPS on payday loans, imposed by the City regulator, will be activated in January to tackle abuse in the quick-credit market.
The move will cost the lucrative industry some £420 million of its annual revenue. The measure was a limit in the overall cost of a loan, which, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) insisted, should never exceed 100% of the total sum borrowed. For example, if a borrower were to take out a £300 loan, the person’s liability would not be more than £600. Fixed default fees will also be capped at £15, said the regulator, with interest on unpaid balances and default fees not exceeding 0.8% per day of the outstanding sum. News of the restrictions prompted the in-
dustry body, the Consumer Finance Association (CFA), to warn that the limits could force many of its members out of business, driving customers towards loan sharks instead as lending criteria tightened. The FCA admitted the measures were likely to cost the payday sector £420m annually, but its chief executive, Martin Wheatley, dismissed the industry’s claim as a “scare story”, telling Sky News the caps would kill off only those firms preying on their customers. He said: “For the many people who struggle to repay their payday loans every year, this is a giant leap forward.
“From January, if you borrow £100 for 30 days and pay back on time, you will not pay more than £24 in fees and charges. And someone taking the same loan for 14 days will pay no more than £11.20. That’s a significant saving. “For those who struggle with their repayments, we are ensuring that someone borrowing £100 will never pay back more than £200 in any circumstance.” He added: “There have been many strong and competing views to take into account, but I am confident we have found the right balance. “Alongside our other new rules for payday firms affordability
tests and limits on rollovers and continuous payment authorities the cap will help drive up standards in a sector which badly needs to improve how it treats its customers.” The measures were announced 24 hours after Wonga - the country’s biggest payday lender - confirmed its new chairman was to lead a drive to improve standards in the wake of damaging revelations that the firm created fake legal letters to threaten borrowers in arrears. Citizens Advice chief executive Gillian Guy said of the caps: “Until now, payday lenders have had the green light to send people into a spiral of unmanageable debt. “The cap will help limit the scale of debts, but its success will depend on enforcement and is part of a raft of measures, including limiting rollovers, that the FCA must make sure lenders are sticking to.”

Scotland is launched into a race for space THERE is a distinct possibility that Scotland could host Britain’s first dedicated base for spaceplanes.
Government Ministers say they want to establish a UK spaceport by 2018, which would be the first of its kind outside the US. Eight aerodromes have been short-listed and Scotland has six of the potential locations. The Scottish government says independence is the key to a greater development of the country’s space industry. For ministers and the space industry, the major interest in a UK spaceport is to enable satellite launches. Hopefully, it would also become a tourist centre, with specialist operators such as Vir-
gin Galactic and XCor involved. Danny Alexander, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, hinted ahead of the announcement at this weekend’s Farnborough Airshow, that Scotland could become a key player in the Government’s plans for developing commercial space travel in the future.. “I am delighted the Government is pushing forward with its ambitious plans to open a spaceport in the UK by 2018,” he said. “Spaceports will be key to us opening up the final frontier of commercial space travel. “Scotland has a proud association with space exploration. We celebrated Neil Armstrong’s Scottish ancestry when he became the first man on the Moon. “And only last week, an amazing Scottish company was responsi-
ble for building the UK Space Agency’s first satellite.” Earlier this week, UKube-1, a satellite built by Glasgow-based technology firm Clyde Space, was successfully launched on a test flight from Kazakhstan - the first-ever spacecraft to be assembled fully in Scotland. Alexander added: “The UK space industry is one of our great success stories, and I am sure there will be a role for Scotland to play in the future.” Business Secretary Vince Cable said: “Our world-leading and am-
bitious space sector is thriving. “This week, we will announce the next steps for this country’s space race, outlining how we will take one giant leap towards establishing the first British spaceport by 2018 - making the UK the place for space.” News of the plan was welcomed by the Scottish Government, which also stressed that its growing space industry would be strengthened by a “Yes” vote for independence on 18th September. A spokeswoman said: “The space sector of-
fers huge economic potential for Scottish companies, indeed the first Scottish satellite, UKube-1, successfully launched on 8th July. “It was a landmark occasion and a clear example of the scientific and engineering excellence being demonstrated by Scotland’s entrepreneurial innovators. “That same day, a report published by Dr Malcolm Macdonald, from Strathclyde Space Institute at Strathclyde University, found that independence could be worth £15-20 million a year in the medium term - and as much as £100 million a year in the longer term to the space sector industry.” She added: “Scotland is proving that it has the expertise to attract and support such a specialised, global industry, and, as such, an independent Scotland will
be an attractive option for spaceport pioneers.” The potential Scottish space-base airports are Stornoway, Kinloss Barracks, RAF Lossiemouth, RAF Leuchars, Glasgow Prestwick, and Campbeltown. England’s Newquay Cornwall airport, and the Llanbedr airport in Wales, will also be considered. Government figures show that the space sector is one of the fastest-growing industries in the UK as a whole. The latest data indicates it is now generating more than £11bn for the economy every year, and employs 34,000 people - an increase of almost 9% on employment figures from 2011. Ministers hope to capitalise on this growth and capture 10% of the global space market by 2030, which could mean the creation of 100,000 additional jobs.

Putin steps into the Falklands’ dispute
RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin has involved himself in the Falkland Islands row.
Putin believes Britain must have fresh talks with Argentina to resolve the dispute. The Russian leader, criticised internationally over the annexation of Crimea, and continuing tensions on the Ukraine border, said his country supported “the necessity” to find a solution to the 200-year-old feud. Putin, at a dinner with Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner during a oneday visit to the country, added: “I’d like to draw attention to the words of the president regarding double discourse in international affairs.” Ms Fernandez has previously accused Britain of double standards
for criticising a proRussian secession vote in Crimea, while using last year’s Falklands referendum - in which islanders voted in favour of remaining British - to justify its rule of the archipelago. She thanked the Russian leader at the dinner for supporting her country’s “national cause”, saying: “Colonisation is a dark cloud over the 20th and 19th centuries, and something that should be totally wiped out.” She added: “We thank the position of Russia regarding the Falkland Islands, and I am going to call a toast in the name of, as you put it, a world without double discourse ... where the international rights are the same for everyone and applied the same way everywhere.” Britain has controlled the Falklands since 1833 - except for 74 days of occupation in 1982 - but
Argentina claims it inherited rights to the Islands in 1816. The Falkland Islands’ sovereignty has long been disputed. And more than 900 people were killed and 2,000 injured 32 years ago during the war triggered by an Argentine invasion. Last month, a UN committee approved a resolution calling on the UK and Argentina to negotiate over the Falkland Islands. Hector Timerman, Argentina’s Foreign Minister, told the UN special committee on decolonisation that the UK’s refusal to “fulfil its obligations to negotiate” over the Islands’ sovereignty went against the founding principle of the UN. However, Falklands’ residents gave speeches at the meeting, saying they were “happy with the current status and don’t want to change it”.
Iran critics facing many years inside AN Iran court has imposed jail sentences totalling 127 years on eight Facebook activists, who wrote critical posts about the ruling regime.
They were said by Iran’s IRNA news agency to have been convicted for spreading propaganda, trying to undermine national security and insulting the country’s leaders. The jailed group are said to be administrators of pages on the social network, but the exact pages and the identity of those jailed
has not been revealed. The court handed down sentences between 11 and 21 years, reported IRNA. The jail terms were passed in April after several court appearances, and they are understood to have appealed. Social networks such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter are banned in Iran, although top officials such as Foreign Minister Javad Zarif have their own accounts. But citizens with hightech knowledge often use proxy servers and other workarounds to get past the controls. Authorities clamped down on social media in the wake of 2009 street
protests against the re-election of former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Sites such as Twitter were accused of being instrumental in organising the unrest. In May, an Iranian court also ordered Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to appear to answer complaints that Facebook-owned applications Instagram and WhatsApp violated the privacy of individuals. President Rouhani, who took power last year, had promised greater freedom on social and media issues, but traditionalists in key institutions are thought to have blocked reform.

NASA believes there are 100 million worlds in our galaxy capable of hosting alien life. And that’s merely a “conservative” prediction by the space agency.
It claims that we will be able to discover that life within 20 years, with a high chance it will be outside our solar system. During a public talk in Washington on Monday, the space agency outlined a roadmap to search for life in the universe, using a number of current and future telescopes. “I would venture to say that most of my colleagues here today say it is improbable that in the limitless vastness of the universe, we humans stand alone,” said former astronaut and Nasa Administrator Charles Bolden. He added: “Do we believe there is life beyond Earth? Mars and a number of moons in our solar system have been the focus of the search for alien life for decades. The James Webb Space will be one of the primary instruments scientists use to continue the search for planets outside our solar system.” Astronomer Kevin Hand recently suggested alien life could exist on Jupiter’s moon Europa. But Nasa scientists on the panel spoke exclusively about looking for signs of life on planets around other stars outside our solar system. “Sometime in the near future, people will be able to point to a star and say, ‘That star has a planet like Earth’,” said Sara Seager, professor of planetary science and physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “Astronomers think it is very likely that every single star in our Milky Way galaxy has at least one planet.” Nasa first began studying planetary systems around other stars with ground-based observatories. It then moved to space-based assets like the Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and

the Kepler Space Telescope. These telescopes can determine if the planets are the right distance away from the star to have liquid water, the key ingredient to life as we know it. Nasa is now hoping to launch the Transiting Exoplanet Surveying Satellite (Tess) in 2017, the James Webb Space Telescope in 2018, and, potentially, the proposed Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope - Astrophysics Focused Telescope Assets, early in the next decade. The Kepler space telescope finds planets using the transit method, which measures the dip in light from stars when a planet passes in front, from which the world’s size and orbit can be deduced Kepler has found many significant planets, including Kepler 296-f - a so-called “super Earth”, twice the
size of our planet but in the habitable zone of its star, meaning it could have liquid water on its surface “This technology we are using to explore exoplanets is real,” said John Grunsfeld, astronaut and associate administrator for Nasa’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. “The James Webb Space Telescope and the next advances are happening now. These are not dreams - this is what we do at Nasa.” During a questionand-answer session, someone using social media, asked: “If scientists do find life on another planet, will the US Government let people know?” Ellen Stofan, chief scientist at Nasa said: “Of course we would! “That would be so amazingly exciting. We would try to get it out to the public as fast as
we can. We want everyone to share in the excitement of discovery.” Finding smaller planets which are the Earth’s “twin” is difficult because they produce fainter signals. Technology to detect and image these Earthlike planets is being developed now for use with the future space telescopes. The ability to detect alien life may still be years or more away, but the quest is underway. “Just imagine the moment when we find potential signatures of life,” said Professor Mountain. “Imagine the moment when the world wakes up and the human race realises that its long loneliness in time and space may be over - the possibility that we’re no longer alone in the universe.” Since its 2009 launch, Kepler has dramatically changed what
scientists know about exoplanets, following its discovery of most of the 5,000-plus potential exoplanets, The Kepler observations have led to estimates of billions of planets in our galaxy, and shown that most planets within one astronomical unit are less than three times the diameter of Earth. Kepler also found the first Earth-size planet to orbit in the “habitable zone” of a star the region where liquid water can pool on the surface. “What we didn’t know five years ago is that, perhaps, 10-20% of stars around us have Earth-size planets in the habitable zone,’ said Matt Mountain, director and Webb telescope scientist at Baltimore’s Space Telescope Science Institute. “It’s within our grasp to pull off a discovery
that will change the world forever.” Nasa scientists on the panel spoke exclusively about looking for signs of life on planets around other stars outside our solar system. Sara Seager, professor of planetary science and physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, said: “Some time in the near future, people will be able to point to a star and say, ‘That star has a planet like Earth’. “Astronomers think it is very likely that every single star in our Milky Way galaxy has at least one planet.” Nasa first began studying planetary systems around other stars with ground-based observatories. Mayday, Mayday over child sex-abuse inquiry HOME Secretary Theresa May has been grilled by MPs over her handling of claims of historical child abuse.
The barrage came after the inquiry process she launched was labelled “shambolic”. Mrs May insisted at the Home Affairs select committee that she stood by her decision to appoint retired judge Lady Elizabeth ButlerSloss, who had earlier announced she was quitting, before she had even started to spearhead one of two key inquiries. She was picked to examine whether alleged abuse by politicians and other powerful figures between the Seventies and Nineties was hushed up. But her appointment proved controversial
because, as an establishment figure herself, victim groups and childprotection campaigners said she was the wrong person to head the investigation. Also, Tory MP Sir Michael Havers, her late brother, was Attorney General and Lord Chancellor during the Eighties. He is alleged to have had a row with former Conservative MP Geof-
frey Dickens in the Eighties to try to stop him using parliamentary privilege to make allegations about paedophilia. Mrs May, in the face of a welter of questions from MPs on the committee, said she was “disappointed” by the peer’s decision and added that a replacement would be announced as soon as possible.
Committee chairman Keith Vaz said the peer’s resignation after just six days showed the inquiry process launched by Mrs May last week was becoming “somewhat shambolic”. But Mrs May countered: “I reject any suggestion that it is, in your words, unravelling, “I continue to believe that Lady Butler-Sloss would have done an excellent job, given her ex-
perience, expertise and absolute integrity.” Baroness Butler-Sloss, who had rejected calls to quit, said in a statement earlier that, following “a widespread perception” she was not the right person to chair the inquiry, “I did not sufficiently consider whether my background and the fact that my brother had been Attorney General would cause difficulties”. Public figures have been accused of abusing children in Westminster, and the Baroness said: “Having listened to the concerns of victim and survivor groups, and the criticisms of MPs and the media, I have come to the conclusion that I should not chair this inquiry and have so informed the Home Secretary.” Labour MP Simon Danczuk, who has been leading a campaign for a full investigation into
the claims, said she had made “the right decision”. He told Sky News: “From the moment it was announced, I questioned the logic of having somebody who was so well-connected to the establishment. “We always needed somebody who was more independent and could challenge the establishment like she never could.” Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said the probe was “in danger of losing direction unless a replacement who could maintain the confidence of victims throughout was appointed”. Last week Mark Sedwill, top civil servant at the Home Office, admitted that more than 100 files containing allegations of child sexabuse at Westminster had probably been destroyed.

A Different View
By Mike Walsh ONGOING scandals revealing the sordid behaviour of Britain’s elite clearly suggest the establishment closes ranks to protect its accused.
Mainstream media are investigative, but whistle-blowers are under constant pressure to back off. Media does name and shame, but those exposed are the tip of the foul iceberg. There are others who, so far, have been the untouchables. They were certainly taboo while they were alive. Critics who say it is unfair to attack those who cannot defend themselves do not understand the laws of libel. Under British jurisprudence, one can tell the truth about a living person’s failings but still be sued for doing so under archaic laws of libel. Once a person is dead, there is still means to clear his or her name, so it is not as one-sided as critics make out. Those accused include Government ministers and the upper echelons of the legal and ecclesiastical circles. Why are so many in public life sexually, politically and financially corrupted and compromised? The numbers of public servants involved in depraved and illegal sexual activities is out of all proportion to those whom they claim to serve. Let us, for a moment, take a look at the wider implications. Imagine the power you would hold over an individual, especially in high position, if you had the evidence which would ruin him or her and the families if it were to be made public. You then realise that it is not just children who are at risk but our national security. If a murky, foreign interest wants to gain control

over another country, there is a strategy known as setting honey traps. The Soviets were good at them, but they were amateurs compared with practitioners in the West. You befriend, win the confidence of the prey; you ply him with gifts, offer access to an elevated lifestyle, and impress with your social circle and your connections. Most of these people will already be in the trap. The prey’s weaknesses are uncovered or he is simply exposed to temptation. He is then guaranteed discretion without legal redress. The egos of men hooked on power are often spiced further by ability to break taboos without fear of exposure. Few of us would steal from a bank. Most will do so if given the opportunity - and assured that they will get away with it. This applies to anything from access to under-age children, drugs or riches. Of course, there will be those who avoid or refuse temptation. If they discover indiscretions, they are left in no doubt that if they are loose-lipped, they will lose their careers. We know what happens to whistle-blowers. What would you do? Heads of State are well aware of what I describe as murky foreign interests. Stanley Baldwin, Benjamin Disraeli and David Lloyd George are just three prime ministers who referred to covert forces behind the theatre of Parliament and Congress. American President Woodrow Wilson said: “There is a power so organised, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it.” And US President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) said: “Behind ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people.” Less- sophisticated
electorates cannot comprehend why their government is so out of touch with public feeling. Why is government so lacking when it comes to backing the national interest? Despite the wishes of the electorate, the establishment forges alliance with deplorable allies, open the doors to the Third World, declare wars they never win, reduce Britain’s defence capability and are soft on law and order. The list is depressingly wrong. Why are the people’s interests and the national interest cold-shouldered by parliaments? Men and women are not drawn to public life for the salaries on offer. Such modest income will never provide them with the lifestyle these elitists crave. There are other reasons for their being attracted to positions of power. It is not necessarily a burning desire to serve. Why would political lightweights be parachuted into ministerial roles to which they are woefully unsuited and inexperienced? Why put forward the name of 21-year-old William Hague to the position of Special Advisor to the Treasury? The man-child’s skills at numeracy are worse than mine. Why was The Rt Hon Barbara Castle given the role of Minister of Transport? She had never held a driving licence. It is because some may have already been financially, sexually or otherwise compromised, and so can be relied upon to carry out the wishes of those “covert forces” To a man whose personal survival is assured, the lure of sex is the strongest of his urges. Those who have already achieved much are constantly
looking for fresh experiences. If no-strings-attached taboo sex is on offer, with every guarantee that the wrong-doer will be protected from exposure or legal redress, then for many the temptation to resist temptation is irresistible. A token few, sordid individuals like Cyril Smith MP and Jimmy Savile, are fingered only after their deaths. Alive, they are ringfenced protected, and the police told not to go there. In March 2003, former PM Tony Blair placed a section of Operation Ore under the Official Secrets Act for 100 years. A police investigation delved into procured paedophilia for
those in high places. Police and others knew that the highest figures in ministerial government, the judiciary, media and church were implicated. Are many deliberately compromised as a control mechanism? If so, it explains much. When the Soviet KGB did it, they were called honey traps. Why else does Britain’s secret service protect the likes of Cyril Smith, the Kray twins, Jeremy Thorpe and far too many of the elite to name here? Former Labour Home Secretary Roy Jenkins oversaw the decriminalisation of homosexuality. A miner’s son, Jenkins was seduced by public school toff Antony Crosland, MP. Such behaviour by that social set was almost procedural. It was rather like an actress expecting to be propositioned in return for a role part. Card-carrying Communist and double agent Labour MP Tom Driberg, like Cyril Smith MP, was constantly arrested for gross behaviour in pub-
lic toilets. A telephone call was enough to get them away from the desk sergeant. What of the debauched behaviour of playwright Noel Coward, novelist Somerset Maugham and cultist Aleister Crowley? Prime Minister Winston Churchill and his close companion, Lord Boothby, constantly visited private gay parties in which the age of the “escorts” was both male and young. The latter would screw a mossy grid. Many of these depraved individuals used the Kray twins and later, Jimmy Savile and others, to arrange “parties” of a nature that today shames Britain. Yes, we should be concerned about such hedonism; we should be outraged for the abuse of innocence. However, what should have sent public-eye men to the gallows was the evidence that, as a consequence of their weakness and corruption, they compromised the interests of their nation.

The Village That’s Falling Into the Sea BBC1, 19:30
Thursday 5 December 2013 is a night the residents of the Norfolk seaside resort of Hemsby will never forget. That night homes fell into the sea during the worst storm surge to hit the East Coast for sixty years. BBC presenter David Whiteley witnessed the drama unfold. Seven months on he returns to find the community still fighting for the survival of their village. Hemsby is the site of one of the country’s first holiday camps, and tourists still flock there today to enjoy its beach. But with no hope of government money to protect it, villagers have seen almost 70 homes go over the edge and into the sea. Seeking advice from erosion experts and business gurus, and building their own defences, the residents are determined not to let Hemsby be lost to the sea. David joins the villagers in their latest campaign, meets the people about to buy a home on the threatened dunes and goes with the map man who’s quite literally been redrawing the map of the East coast over 40 years of erosion.

Sam is one of around 5000 people in the UK with epidermolysis bullosa (EB), which means her skin is so fragile, the slightest touch or rub can result in painful blisters and open wounds. The film features Jenna, who describes the value of having a DEBRA community support worker who helped her learn to care for her baby son Freddie and change his dressings, even when he is in pain. DEBRA also arranged a grant so the family could install carpet that wouldn’t chafe Freddie’s skin. Sam relates to 11-year-old Josh, who is determined not to let his skin condition rule his life. DEBRA has enabled Josh’s family to go on holiday. The charity is appealing for support for its work giving direct help to people living with EB, and for the research it funds into a possible cure.

Sir Chris Hoy won a record-breaking six Olympic Gold medals for cycling before retiring after London 2012. Now, for a BBC One documentary, he looks at his journey and speaks to other outstanding medalwinning athletes to discover How To Win Gold. Sir Chris Hoy says: “The success I had never stopped surprising me because I don’t think I was simply born a champion. I don’t think anyone is. I want to show you how champions are made, through endless hard work and determination, by victory and defeat, by brain as well as brawn, by great teams and amazing support. And if I can do it, anyone can, because we all start off with a chance of winning gold.” Andy Murray, Sir Steve Redgrave, Rebecca Adlington, Lennox Lewis, and Graeme Obree all tell their story on what pushed them to the top of their game, while Sir Chris explains the physical and psychological process he underwent to make sure he was the best in his field. Sir Steve Redgrave was picked out at school by a teacher for having big hands and feet to make him suitable for rowing. He pinpoints desire to succeed, outweighing skill level as the gold factor. Meanwhile, Wimbledon Champion Andy Murray puts proving people wrong as a factor in his own determination, and discusses the pressure of expectation and how he dealt with the nation’s hopes for him. Swimming gold-medallist Rebecca Adlington, who won one of her two gold medals by a fingertip, talks about the tiniest manoeuvres and decisions that can make the difference between winning and losing. Meanwhile, for boxer Lennox Lewis, who retired as the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, it was all about tactics and psyching out the opposition. For fellow cyclist Graeme Obree, the drive of fear of regret was the one thing that pushed him to his limit – and admits he would rather have died than let his opponent win the World Championships in 1995. During the documentary, we also hear from Sir Chris’s family and team, who talk about the highs and lows of the years of hard work and preparation. We also follow Sir Chris as he starts on his new goal, to race for a professional motor racing team.

Diamond Geezers and Gold Dealers ITV1, 21.00 Hatton Garden has been London’s jewellery quarter for over 200 years. Located north west of the City, it is a half-mile stretch where millions of pounds of gold, silver and precious stones are bought and sold every day. In Diamond Geezers and Gold Dealers, a new ITV documentary, cameras have been given exclusive, behind the scenes access to some of the distinctive characters who inhabit Hatton Garden; the wheelers and dealers and talented jewellery makers who make their living from this multi-million pound industry. The area attracts everyone from millionaire clients who commission exclusive pieces, to those who are just looking for that extra special ring to propose to a loved one. Among the characters featured in the programme are a gold trader who conducts the sale of a diamond ring in the back of a taxi, a bespoke jewellery maker who is seen working on an intricate diamond-studded bird, and a precious metal reclamation expert who gives a vivid insight into her often mucky job. Michael Lynton has been creating bespoke jewellery for over 40 years. He has worked at some of the best jewellery houses in the country and uses techniques that have barely changed for hundreds of years. He began his career as an indentured apprentice and now works in a tiny windowless basement in Hatton Garden. His most recent commission from a client is an exclusive gold bird decorated with diamonds which will form part of a necklace. Michael says: “These tools are like my children, I just know them. I’ve been working with these things for so many years. He continues: “You’ve got to love what you do and I’ve always stuck to the maxim, if you don’t like what you do then you’re not really going to be very good at it. I mean even after 50 years I’m only as good as the last job that I’ve ever done.” Leigh Stutman works in precious metal reclamation. A glamorous 25-yearold, she stands out in this predominately male world. Leigh works for her uncle’s company Presman Mastermelt, helping to extract bits of gold from dirty workshops by vacuuming up the gold dust. The company also makes money by sifting through workshop drains for any bits of precious metal that have been washed down the plughole and by melting gold teeth which mostly come from dentists. Leigh explains: “Anywhere that you would normally throw away waste in your workshop there will be metal in it, your clothes, seat covers, your shoes, we’ve had people give us their dog beds, anywhere.” Amazingly thousands of pounds of gold can be reclaimed from these grimy workshops and Leigh enjoys presenting the companies with their winnings. She is asked to clean out Michael’s workshop and makes him just over £1,000 from the collected gold dust. She says: “It’s rewarding when you know that you’ve shown someone there is money in what they consider to be rubbish. Or just maybe someone like Michael will see that he should invest in a hoover!” Steve is a sole trader who makes a living by buying and selling gold. He’s always in search of treasure that he can sell and make his fortune with. He wheels and deals his way round Hatton Garden and travels the country looking for items. He says: “You never know what you’re going to buy, you never know what’s going to come over the counter. And you’re just waiting for that one piece, and that’s what everyone hopes for.” Steve makes money by selling on the gold he collects for a profit but as gold prices are fixed twice a day, profits can fluctuate. He says: “The gold I’ve just bought is dropping very quickly so I need to sell it straight away just to try and get a days wages or get a profit.” Hatton Garden punter Chris Eracleous, is a security guard who has commissioned a diamond ring and plans to propose to his girlfriend of four years. He chooses Karl Karter to make the ring. Karl is a new jewellery maker who creates modern pieces using traditional methods.

In today’s episode, Ben drops in on the larger-than-life husband and wife team running Poole’s oldest fish wholesalers. Ken and Clara Greenslade’s family business dates back four generations. Despite both being over eighty, neither are showing any sign of retirement and Ben’s keen what keeps them motivated to carry on working. Clara then sends Ben out to sea with two of her favourite fishermen in search of whelks, but with 240 pots to haul, he’s certainly got his work cut out. Ben also travels to a village with an unique and extraordinary past. Tyneham was once much like any other Dorset village but in November 1943, the 225 residents were evacuated at short notice as Winston Churchill’s War Cabinet wanted to use the area for training in preparation for the D-Day landings. Despite believing one day they would be allowed to return to their homes, sadly this was never to happen - the Ministry of Defence ordered a compulsory purchase and the land has remained in military hands ever since. One of the people who sacrificed their home for the war effort was 86-year old Dougie Churchill, one of the few remaining villagers still alive, and he reminisces with Ben about what it was like to live in this now ghost village. We also join a crucial wildlife count on the historic island of Brownsea, the largest of the harbour’s eight islands. Famous for being one of the few safe havens left in the UK for the endangered red squirrel, it’s a magnet for thousands of nature lovers every year, including 72-year-old island volunteer Richard Yeoman. He and the National Trust Volunteer Team are carrying out the annual bird and mammal survey of the island. Last year’s inspection threw up some worrying signs as a direct result of the terrible winter of 2012/13. Will the wildlife numbers have improved this year?

HA-HA... IT’S FUNNY BONES! Seventies glam-rock playboy. His costumes will make you smile immediately, along with the walk and talk of this funny man. As Lou Rex, Brian draws on his many years of experience in entertainment - and his extensive song repertoire to bring his unique style to audiences. The Lou Rex character was born after Brian performed in a comedy vocal group in the UK called The 4 Mations, and all four guys had characters similar to Lou Rex. When the group split, Brian decided to leave the UK for Tenerife. But he kept Lou Rex going, and fast became one of the most popular acts on the circuit. What’s so good about this show is that venue owners can choose what they would like from Lou Rex. He offers a full comedy show in character (adults only) or a show packed full of songs from the Seventies. Either way, laughter is inevitable. Brian is a naturally funny guy, and even socially he is always the one to make people laugh. He has an extensive vocal range and could easily cut it as a singer on any circuit. Brian also works as a com-
Laughter cannot be forced - is always spontaneous. An audience will applaud after a song, even if it is delivered badly. It’s a natural reaction at the end of a song, and it encourages others to join in. But this cannot be said for laughter. If something isn’t funny, there is no sympathy vote: people simply won’t laugh. What they do, however, is sit in silence which is every comedian’s worst nightmare. Comedy is so unforgiving, yet so satisfying when the laughter flows. One character who has always made me laugh is Lou Rex. He is played by entertainer Brian O’Neal, who has been on the Island for 14 years and has entertained the masses in many different ways. Lou Rex is a living caricature of a typical
WHAT’S NEW
QUITE a few new acts have arrived on the Island this year. Most of them have had success and are still enjoying the benefits of living and working on our sunshine isle. This week, I have been contacted by an act in the UK for advice on moving their show here. What sets them apart is that they are a comedy duo and, not only are they brothers but identical twins to boot! They plan on coming early next year, which is not that far away. I have watched You Tube videos of them working venues in
the UK and I am sure they will do very well here. Right now, Geoff Aday, the new Meatloaf, is picking up gigs quickly. So far, every venue which has tried him out has ended up giving him a regular gig. Geoff has been here just a short while, and his diary is wide open at the moment. He is actively seeking and gaining work. But the only way to attract work on this circuit is to get out there in front of the bookers and comperes, and show them what you do. Everyone can talk a good show at the bar,
or sit on Facebook and hope to get work by advertising. But the real deals come when you are there in person and you are ready and willing to give a 15-minute preview of your show. It works better than any poster of video on social networks. Geoff is old school. He is doing things the right way, and I would like to welcome him officially to Tenerife’s entertainment scene. This is a fabulous place to work, and it’s wonderful to be part of the entertainment scene. Nearly 20 years ago a lady who, were she still alive, would be over 100 now, told me: “If you find a job you
pere and, again, uses his comedy skills to engage an audience and entertain them. He is a dazzling allrounder in his field, and he knows just how important to be versatile on this circuit. He also knows that more work can be gained if you are able to side-step into other roles. Brian has been mixing his working life between Lou Rex and himself for a long time, and is wellrespected among his peers as an entertainer of the highest degree. He is certainly one of the most experienced entertainers here, and he is always happy to help new acts on the Island. I have first-hand experience of his generosity. When I arrived here just a few months after Brian, he was the first to help me get my name about, and he was responsible for helping get my first two regular spots. I will always be grateful for his help and friendship in those early days. And since then, I have held a deep respect for Brian and his work. He is a thoroughbred entertainer, and definitely in Tenerife’s Hall of Fame.
enjoy, you will never work another day in your life.” She went on to say that she thought I enjoyed my job immensely. She was right. And I still do. And to this day, I thank my lucky stars that I have a job which involves no work - just sheer enjoyment. As entertainers, we sometimes get used to being in this environment and forget how lucky we are. This can sometimes make you lose focus. Entertainment can be fickle at times, but there is no feeling in the world that can match up to the buzz you get from a good night on stage.

BIENES GANANCIALES
(Marriage Community Assets) By Mariano Zunino Siri
Sometimes legal jargon can be very hard to understand and for many people it’s rather off-putting.
But just like the very first time you walked into a French restaurant and discovered it’s all about learning the words. Then, hey presto, it’s not so daunting. So lets see if I can help you a little... Some of the phrases which can be difficult to understand are the meanings of “Bienes Gananciales”, “Sociedad de Gananciales”, “Matrimonio en Régimen de Gananciales” opposing the “Matrimonio en Régimen de Separación de Bienes”. The word “Bien”, as a noun, means Good (“Bienes” means “Goods” which would be the assets). Assets could be “movables” or “immovables”, “fungible” or “not fungible”, “tangible” or “intangible”, etc. (see below a small list). “Gananciales” would be the adjective. This
could be translated as Community of Wealth, or Community of Assets. This is a marriage community in which the assets are common to the spouses, and at the time of its dissolution (ie: divorce) are divisible between them in equal shares. It is confined to their future acquisition during the life of the marriage and the fruits (profits). When husband and wife join their lives in “Sociedad de Gananciales” it means that everything (properties bought during marriage and profits) would belong to the “company” formed by the spouses. At the time of dissolution, each would receive half of the “company”. The word “ganancial” comes from the word “ganancia” or “ganar”, which would mean profit or earnings. According to this, all the profits obtained by one of the spouses would belong the “company” (comunidad de gananciales) formed by the two spouses. Anyhow, not only are the profits “gananciales,
but all assets acquired during marriage (with exemptions). The opposite system is “Separación de Bienes”, which would be “Separation of Wealth”. In this case, each person (spouse) owns his/her own assets during marriage. Bear in mind that goods received by inheritance are not included
in these groups. The law says that all the assets are, presumably, “gananciales” (common), which means that if one of the spouses wants to prove that they are not, he/she should prove that. I include a small list to clarify the meaning of some words. I hope it helps. BIENES: goods, assets,
resources. BIENES RAÍCES: real estate BIENES MUEBLES: movables, bona mobilia BIENES INMUEBLES: immovables, real estate, bona inmobilia BIENES MATERIALES: possessions IMPUESTO SOBRE BIENES INMUEBLES: property tax, rates (IBI) INMOBILIARIA: estate
agent, real estate professional BIENES COMUNES: common assets BIENES PROPIOS: own property Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer registered in Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. Office in Los Cristianos at Edificio Valdes Center Torre “A”, oficina 1, piso 2º. Phone: 922 79 44 12.
Legal-aid bill reduced WE are all entitled to a legal defence, and the taxpayer often has to foot the bill.
This can be quite a drain on the Spanish Government, but last year saw a decline in money spent on legal aid. In the Canary Islands, for example, the 2013 bill was one million euros lower than the previous year. The Bar Association attributes the reduction to adjustments made by the Canarian Government on the remuneration of lawyers. The Canary Islands’ legal-aid bill was 15.6 million euros in 2013, one million euros less than in the 2012 - and the equivalent of a 6.7% drop. It comes after two years of continuous growth and makes the Islands only the fifth
community in Spain to drop from 2012. This is reflected in
the Eighth Report of the Observatory for Legal Aid, prepared by
the General Council of Spanish Lawyers. Asked about the ori-
gin of this decline, Victor Fernandez-Medina Aceytuno, dean of the College of Lawyers of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, explained that legal-aid lawyers are working for a lower hourly rate. “The reduction has been made after consideration of the counsel, and the lower pay was approved by the Canary Islands Government,” said Medina, before detailing that the scales are the sums lawyers are paid when they perform services within framed legal aid. He added: “The number of cases has not declined; in fact, it seems that more and more people are going for legal-aid fees. But the Canarian Government wanted to reduce costs, citing that it had to tighten the budget. Lawyers’ representative Victor Medina was upset with the action
taken by the regional government. “This is money that was taken away from the lawyers and it’s not right,” he complained. “In the health sector if waiting lists are not met, they don’t pay those professionals any less. They could always get cheaper medical supplies.” There is no real set amount for legal-aid lawyers - it depends on a case-by-case basis. But some given examples showed that “Family proceedings” involving a fee, went from 417 euros to 300. A “standard hour” went from 281 to 253 euros and a general criminal procedure 448 to 414 euros. Nevertheless, the General Council of the Judiciary’s report showed that the Canary Islands is the fifth-largest investor in Community Justice.

The dangers of barbecued chicken THE sun is beaming down on us, and the barbecue season is in full flow - not just here but in the UK as well.
And that spells barbecue weather! But consumers are being warned about the potential risk to health when cooking chicken over the coals. A spate of food poisoning in Scotland, linked to poultry, has led to more than 1,000 people
falling ill with vomiting and diarrhoea in the past few weeks. That is 27% higher than the average figure for the same period over the past three years. Following the illnesses, caused by the bacteria “campylobacter”, health experts are reminding barbecue-lovers about the importance of handling and cooking chicken properly. NHS Scotland laboratories have confirmed a total of 1,073 infections with the bug, but the numbers are sure to
be higher because not every sufferer will have contacted the health service for advice. The campylobacter bug is caused by people’s frequent contact with raw poultry, which leads to stomach pains, sickness and diarrhoea. And though most people recover quickly, the symptoms can last for up to 11 days. In the worst cases, people can even die from complications, with young children and the elderly mostly at risk.
Dr Alison Smith-Palmer, epidemiologist for Health Protection Scotland, which monitors diseases, said: “One of the ways people get it is through mishandled poultry, such as washing it under the kitchen tap, or handling raw poultry and then bread products or salad. “Another way is by not cooking poultry properly on the barbecue.” Typically, cases of campylobacter increase in the summer months in Scotland. This is linked to the popularity of barbecues in the warmer weather, and people picking up the food poisoning when dining out on foreign holidays. Dr Smith-Palmer added: “We know some of our cases are acquired abroad - people going over and bringing it back from holiday.” However, there is no certainty about the cause of the surge in cases seen in Scotland since mid-June. The infection is not passed easily from person to person, and the latest batch seems to be spread across the
country and across age groups. “There are probably multiple reasons why it has gone up more this year than previous years, said the doctor. “One could be warmer weather and barbecuing, and also people being out in the environment.” The Food Standards Agency (FSA) launched a campaign about campylobacter last month, saying it was the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK. However, it is less well known than
E.coli or salmonella. According to the FSA, about four out of five cases of campylobacter poisoning are caused by contact with raw poultry. It is promoting the message not to wash raw chicken, as splashed water droplets can spread the bacteria across hands, clothing, work surfaces and cooking equipment. People who become ill with symptoms of food poisoning are advised to drink fluids and practise good hygiene, such as giving their hands a good wash.

Snoring or groaning? It still wakes you up!
THAT irritating “snore”, emitted by your partners every night, might not be what it seems - they may actually be groaning in their sleep!
And knowing the difference could be crucial to getting a decent sleep. Groaning at night, known as catathrenia, is a relatively new diagnosis. It usually occurs in the latter part of sleep, with each groan lasting up to 50 seconds. The groans may be very loud and can occur hundreds of times a night, according to US research. Not only do they cause problems with poor sleep and keeping partners awake, but groaners may also experience embarrassment and anxiety, because the noises they produce can sound sexual. This might help explain why it takes an average of 11 years from when the symptoms start for people to seek help. The good news is that scientists have now identified a ”gold standard” for diagnosing the condition, while other research has found that devices that hold airways open at night
could help stop it. Catathrenia was first reported by Belgian doctors in 1983. Sufferers have repeated bouts of groaning or moaning while asleep, each of which lasts between two and 50 seconds, and usually ends with an abrupt snort, although the sufferer usually remains asleep. The noise is produced when the sleeper is exhaling, which distinguishes it from the sound of snoring, which usually comes during inhaling. The groaning bouts can come and go throughout the night, although they usually bunch together in the small hours, between
two and six hours after falling asleep. Any one stretch of night-groaning can last as long as an hour and, in most people, symptoms occur every night. It is not known how many people it affects, partly because it is a relatively recent medical discovery, but also because it may be confused with snoring and other sleep disorders. What is known is that the condition is three times more common in men than woman, according to the British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association, and it often starts around the age of 19. It may run in families,
and can occur with other sleep problems, such as sleep-walking. And the noises appear to have nothing to do with what the groaner is dreaming about. People with catathrenia usually have calm, facial expressions and seem to be sleeping peacefully, despite the loud noise, according to research from the American Sleep Association. As for causes, one theory is that it is linked to other sleep-related disorders, such as sleepwalking or bed-wetting as a child. A study of women with catathrenia found that 43% were sleep-walkers in childhood, or suffered
from night terrors or childhood bed-wetting. These disorders can occur as a result of disruption to so-called rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. There are different stages of sleep, which we repeat in cycles throughout the night, waking briefly between each cycle. REM sleep comes at the end of each cycle and takes up about 20% of our sleep time. Breathing becomes more rapid, irregular, and shallow, the eyes move rapidly - hence the name - and limbs are paralysed temporarily. This type of sleep is associated with vivid dreams and increased brain activity, and it is believed that the temporary paralysis stops us acting out our dreams. Like nocturnal groaning, we tend to have more REM sleep in the later sleep cycles in the small hours. But other researchers are not convinced nocturnal groaning is related to sleep itself. They feel it may have a more straightforward mechanical cause. A study at Japan’s Osaka University suggests in some cases that it may be linked to contractions of the muscles associated with teeth
grinding (or bruxism). Another study found women with the condition had particular physical characteristics, such as a narrow upper airway, large tongue and a small jaw. Researchers at Stanford University speculated that the women had evolved an exhaling breathing pattern to get around these problems, which resulted in the nocturnal groaning. Genes are another candidate. The Stanford University researchers have also found that in 14.8% of cases, there is a family history of groaning. Perhaps, not surprisingly, nocturnal groaning is not good for health, with between 50-80% per of sufferers having problems related to their poor sleep, including next day fatigue, and chronic sore throats. Depression and anxiety may also be more common in people living with the condition. However, it’s often their distress and embarrassment about the noise that prompts people to seek medical help, according to scientists at the University of Bologna in Italy. So the next time your other half is keeping you awake, it could be worth considering: was that a snore or a groan?
No wonder kids’ teeth CHILD neglect is to blame for “absolutely appalling” levels of children needing their teeth pulled in hospital. NHS figures show it is the most common reason for children in England being admitted to hospital, with some needing all 20 baby teeth removed. The British Dental Health Foundation said some parents were not paying enough attention to the importance of their children’s teeth. Three years ago,
22,574 children aged five to nine were admitted for rotting teeth. But provisional figures for the year beginning April 2013 show that the number has increased to 25,812. Figures from the Health and Social Care Information Centre show the next biggest cause of hospital admissions among the age group was tonsillitis, with 11,522. Dr Nigel Carter, British Dental Health Foundation chief, told the BBC: “It is a case of child neglect. They’re
not giving the correct diet - they’re getting sugary drinks. “There’s no attention to their oral hygiene regime, and parents are failing to take their children to the dentist when their first teeth come through. They wait until a child is in pain with a mouthful of rotten teeth.” Fizzy sugar drinks, smoothies and fruit juices, already criticised as a cause of child obesity, are also being blamed. Kathryn Harley, a paediatric dentist,
said: “We see an awful lot in the media linking sugar to obesity and other health problems, and not enough about the link between sugar in the diet and oral health.” Last month, a group of scientists called for children to be given only water to drink to combat obesity and protect teeth. Professor Susan Jebb, of the University of Oxford, said: “It comes back to simple advice to parents - encourage your children to drink water.

Great white Brits won’t get tanned with these cossies
By Ruth Benson IT seems that swimwear is the year’s mosttalked-about fashion item – and no wonder!
Those who read my column regularly will know about the Ta Ta Top, C-String and the Lateral Thong. The one hitting social media this week is the long-sleeve swimsuit. Rihanna has posted pictures of herself wearing one on her Instagram account this week while she was in Brazil. She is seen one minute in jeans and the top with the legendary Pele, and the next it has transformed to a swimsuit.
The long-sleeved suit comes in two styles: the basic swimsuit with sleeves, or the crop top, which is what Rihanna chose. The swimsuit originates from a Dallasbased company which is a sun-protectant clothing label called Cover. The brand first started in 2012 and is now being stocked by Harpers Bizarre. Lisa Moore, the brains behind the design, came up with the idea after her sister, who has melanoma, could never find a swimsuit to protect her skin. Lisa went on to design and create more ideas with the intention of protecting the skin. Not only is this fantastic for sun protection, but the costumes are made out of spandex, so they can come in a range of styles and sizes. Critics say it does not
completely protect you from the sun and, with stars such as Rihanna wearing them, it will just be this year’s craze. Long-sleeve swimsuits or “rash guards” which they have also been known as have actually been around a long time. They are usually worn by surfers as protection from all types of elements such as the weather and chaffing. And similar products have also been designed for kids. The long sleeve is more than protection for this summer; it is another swimwear must-have. With a variety of styles, colours and designs, they are now being stocked in the high street - not just to be worn as swimwear but as a top to go out in as well. At Fashion Week Swim this year in Miami, on display were styles which included long sleeve, threequarters and ones with zips and tassels. Need I say more? The designers emphasised that they were not just for the beach and pool, but can be worn any time. The long-sleever seems mainly to be doing well in America and Australia, with the UK not really taking off. This may be because when there is any sun in the UK, the last thing people want to do is cover up!
h are rotting “Once they’ve been weaned, ‘Children should be drinking water’ is the message. Milk is fine, but that
should be the mainstay of our advice.” In June, the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition also
called for people to reduce their intake of added sugar by more than half. The Committee said sugar added to food, or naturally present in fruit juice and honey, should account for 5% of energy intake. But many people fail to meet the previous 10% target. One 330ml can of fizzy pop will take a typical adult up to the proposed 5% daily allowance, and will exceed a child’s limit - without factoring in sugar from any other source!

WHEN it comes to looking after the condition of your hair, there’s nothing more sacred than what you put back into it that counts.
In the salon, I try to advise clients without trying to sell them products. And anyway, most of them sell themselves! When I see hair damage and/or breakage, this is when I really ask: “What do you actually put on your hair?” Some of the time, the reply is, “whatever’s nearest”, and it makes me kind of sad to think that someone doesn’t care enough about what’s on her head for all to see. We have so many factors in Tenerife that can be attributed to the drying effects on your hair. The solution is all about “replacement” whatever has been taken out, needs to be put back. If you’ve coloured your hair, used irons or hairdryers, etc, these strip it of the building blocks it comprises, which gives it strength. It’s a strength known as KERATIN PROTEIN and it’s what holds your hair together, stopping it from breaking off and drying out. Forget words on cheap shampoo bottles and conditioners that say your hair will “feel” stronger. There’s a difference between “feel” and “will be”.
If it says it will be stronger, this statement claims that your hair will genuinely improve, and not be coated in some plastic gunk which makes it feel better, when underneath it’s still bone-dry. This is how these products really work, coating your hair to “mask” the problem. It’s rather like putting a plaster on your finger when you cut it. Yes, it’s still damaged underneath, but it looks better with the plaster on. You have to get to the root of the problem, or stop it before it starts. And keeping up with the needs of your hair doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Quality products last longer than the cheap varieties because they are more concentrated. Another way we tackle this problem is by applying one of our Kera-
tin treatments, which actually penetrate the hair shaft to rebuild the hair from inside out. The hair is stronger instantly, is smoother and has more body. There are so many products out there that it can be bewildering. So always tell your stylist what you are using. You may think you’re doing it the world of good by using what you’ve got, but it could all be a waste if it’s not the right one for your hair. Talk to your stylists about what they recommend. Start from your shampoo and go right through your whole hair-care regime. Without good back-up for your hair treatment, you could be on your way to drying it out all together. Or, at worse, damaging more of it which could have been saved.

By Monica Dyson WHEN I was growing up in the Fifties, we didn’t worry too much about decor, although my mother liked the house to look nice.
It was a council property, which meant that the outside was painted occasionally, but little you could do to the inside. You didn’t install fitted kitchens or new bathrooms, even if you could afford it - like many council tenants do today. My mother did the decorating. Many women did at a time when it was sometimes difficult to work out exactly what men did do when they weren’t at work. She papered the living room every year in time for Christmas. I don’t know why, but that’s what she did! She favoured bright, often floral wallpaper, and at a time when you backed your text books for school in what was left over from a roll of paper, my sister and I always had very noticeable books. One year when she decided to use flock paper, and, at school, we were thought of as very posh! One thing my father did do was to cover the lovely panelled doors with hardboard. It was called “flushing”. It is funny to think that in later years, all the doors which had been flushed would be uncovered and stained, together with replacing the ceiling roses, coving and picture rails, which were also removed as being “too old-fashioned”.

Mirrored ceilings? Think Diana Dors
Our wonderful Yorkshire range, a giant in black lead which, in our house and many others, was ripped out in favour of a soul-less gas fire, became a collector’s item in the last decade or so. It was interesting to read recently that there are certain things which make houses difficult to sell. Woodchip wallpaper came at the top of the list. Thought of as an old person’s wall covering, but very popular in the Seventies, it was serviceable as it meant that walls could simply be emulsioned over it. I don’t know what my mother would have made of it, though, because she loved her pat-
terned papers. Incredibly, in second place came mirrored ceilings! Well, I don’t know about you, but I haven’t actually ever known anyone with one of those. I always tend to think of Diana Dors in relation to mirrored ceilings. She was an actress and sex symbol throughout four decades from the Forties through to her death in 1984 at the age of 53. And she was known for her extravagant lifestyle, opulent mansions, flash cars, platinum blonde hair, abortions, husbands, high-profile lovers and curvaceous figure. When dubbed the British Marilyn Monroe, she said that she’d rather be
thought as “The Hurricane in Mink” - she was often photographed in mink bikinis. Her associates, less than savoury, included the Kray Twins and the notorious-crooked landlord Peter Rachman, whose nefarious activities gave a new word to the Oxford English Dictionary of “Rachmanism”. Rachman had an insatiable appetite for women, counting among his mistresses Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice Davies. And he was an eager participant of the voyeurism at the home of Diana and her first husband, Dennis Hamilton, by means of the two-way mirrors on the ceilings.
Other features designed to put off wouldbe house-purchasers included avocado bathroom suites - once a must-have feature in everyone’s home; artex ceilings (it must have been the thought of taking the stuff off that deterred people); bidets, as many people confessed to be completely baffled by them, themed rooms (think Graceland); animal-print furnishings and, strangely enough, hot tubs! Now I don’t actually know anyone with a hot tub. They have never seemed to me to be an essential part of my home décor. But I understand that the one thing worse than having a hot tub is having
neighbours who have one. The noise of the thing running, the inane and drunken laughter, revelries going on until all hours of the night and the bright lights shining straight into your windows! What a thought! Isn’t it funny how things have changed? Top-selling features of houses now are a fitted kitchen, granite work surfaces, heated towel rails, roll-top baths, Aga cooker, American fridge freezer and neutral colour scheme. For men, a must-have feature is a double garage, while every modern woman’s dream would be a walk-in wardrobe. A far cry from my mother and her everchanging wallpaper. Fitted kitchens were just a dream in the Fifties. It was enough to be able to feed your family adequately after the limitations of the war years. She thought she’d found Utopia when she got her new upright cooker with eye-level grill. The fridge was a hole in the back garden with a piece of slate covering it, and she certainly wouldn’t have liked a neural colour scheme. There was nothing quite like going down to Blaskeys and looking through the wallpaper books. But I don’t think children today cover their text books. I’m not sure that our present education system runs to the cost of the personal provision of a text book for each child. I must admit, they did make your satchels very heavy!

Garden
18th July 2014 - 24th July 2014
By Margaret Tully
IT is not always people with gardens who love plants, and especially flowers - as can be seen by the colourful balconies and patios around.
That’s why, in my weekly page, I always like to include plants which can also thrive in pots and containers, for people who have no garden. Balconies, terraces and patios often have their own micro-climate, and they can sometimes be wonderful places for growing interesting or unusual plants successfully. In the Canaries, people can be here for only months at a time and don’t want too many plants that may need taking care of in their absence. This week, I am writing a little about the various types of pots and plants which are successful in such places, and are easy to maintain. And I’ll also tell you how to go about creating a pot garden if you have a blank canvas. Imagine your patio or roof terrace completely empty free from table and chairs/the barbecue/the outside, cupboard, etc. Now you have a space that can be filled with plants. The first thing to do is choose what pots you want for your plants. There are many colourful varieties on the market, so you are not restricted to brown or black plastic pots or clay pots. If you like the rustic, farmhouse style with a traditional feel then clay, terracotta pots are definitely a good choice. But I personally feel that the balcony or patio of a modern apartment is better suited to a selection of coloured, matching pots. If you have a small area, be mindful of the space you need for your table and chairs, etc, and just have the
45 CW
Going potty about patios
number of plants which complement the space and not a mishmash of pots crammed in. Group your pots in threes or fives and choose similar plants to sit side by side. They will need the same conditions so, logically, they are better in the same place. For example, pelargoniums look excellent in pots, and they flower all season. They come in many colours, so you can match your scheme perfectly. Let’s take an example: three white plastic pots, two medium pots and one slightly smaller. The smaller one is in the front, and they are all planted with redflowering pelargoniums. Put maybe two plants in the larger ones, or you could add a plant just for foliage, such as Saxifraga stolonifera (Creeping Saxifrage), which trails down the side of the pot and complements the pelargoniums. This arrangement makes a statement and you can then accessorise your table
with red candles or a red bowl, and cushions with red in them on the chairs. You now have three pots which need watering. This is not difficult and not timeconsuming, but will give you pleasure. From this three-pot arrangement, you can choose more pots and plants that work within the scheme. This prevents you from buying every plant you like, and it also makes the space seem
bigger, rather than just cluttered. At the opposite end is a large terrace. For this you must look at the whole space and, either split it into smaller areas or choose a large item as a focal point to place in the centre, or on one wall. It could be a structure you can pot up, or perhaps a water feature. This size of space gives you more opportunity, but it could also be daunting because terraces can be empty
spaces with just a few pots in one corner. When buying pots, think large! Buy three large pots, three medium pots and three small ones and create three areas in three of the corners, which become the framework for the central space. You can plant trees in the larger pots; anything from citrus fruit trees, palms or olive trees. Hibiscus are ideal for the medium pots, and the smaller ones can be planted with pelargoniums, mixing in some foliageonly plants to soften the look. The central focal point can be a herb wheel or, if the focal point is against one wall, growing a bougainvillea or a passion flower will set it off. Often, terraces can be very exposed to wind or high temperatures and these conditions have to be considered. If you want to create a shaded area, build a trellis with natural wood, or erect a metal structure. These can become cool areas for plants which won’t tolerate strong sun, such as honeysuckle or a grapevine. Here’s a check-list of things to remember before planning your patio or terrace garden: 1, How much space do you have for pots? This will determine how many pots and what size, you need to buy 2, Try to stick to a colour
scheme or specific look, such as modern or rustic. This helps focus the space and give it an identity 3, Consider how much time you have to be able to look after the plants, and think about fitting a timed irrigation system for your pots 4, Don’t put all your pots in one place, especially on a large terrace. Create a framework for the entertaining space in the centre 5, Buy plants that will work in your conditions. Ask at the garden centre for advice, and then make your selection 6, Use a suitable compost for pots as this has the right level of nutrients and will slowly release them into the plant roots. Always replenish the top of the soil with fresh soil after a year and re-pot if absolutely necessary 7, The main tip is not to get carried away at the garden centre and spend money on plants and pots that won’t fit or survive in your space. You will get downhearted and probably give up I guarantee that if you weren’t keen on gardening before, get a few pots on your patio or terrace and, by sticking to some basic rules, you will love your outside space and it will really lift your spirits. Most people feel better for being around plants and remember, there are plants to suit all tastes.

By Jav FORD, always at the forefront of technology, have fitted their new Fiesta ST-3 with all the kit you would need - and more besides.
And that makes it just about faultless!
18th July 2014 - 24th July 2014
Ford hatch so hot!
All the hot-hatches to emerge from rival manufacturers are generally compared with the Fiesta, but they always lag behind in the value stakes. The ST-3 a far more engaging drive than its would-be competitors, with fantastic steering for those who like to put their foot down at every opportunity. The willing 1.6 engine’s superb handling ensures that it is, indeed, an outstanding motor, and it is hardly surprising that Ford sold 20%
more STs for starters than forecast. The ST has always been about giving more for less, with knockout performances at a knockdown price. And now this new range-topping ST-3 model, packed with extra kit, is still cheaper than the Peugeot 208 GTi and Renaultsport Clio. There has always been a slight niggle about the car’s standard kit - or rather, the lack of it and, following customer complaints, Ford have
introduced a fully loaded ST-3. Added standard-fit goodies include keyless entry, sat-nav, cruise control, auto lights and wipers, plus climate control. In return, Ford ask only £1,000 over the ST-2, at £19,250 – that’s £745 and £495 cheaper respectively than the Clio RS Lux and 208 GTi Prestige. Wisely, Ford have left the mechanical side untouched. That means the 180bhp 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine re-
mains, twinned with the slick-shifting six-speed manual box. And from the moment you hit the starter button, the ST never fails to impress The raspy exhaust encourages you to press on as you rifle through the gears. In corners, the ST always feels composed as it bites into the tarmac and fires you out with zest. There’s no escaping the overly firm ride, and around town the car can get a bit jittery, but faultless handling
and body control make amends. If you prefer a softer set-up with similar punch, Ford are also offering the standard Fiesta with a 138bhp version of the excellent 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine. You can squeeze three adults into the back, but the 290-litre boot isn’t as accommodating as that of the Clio. However, that’s a minor flaw, and the new flagship ST-3 builds on Ford’s reputation for producing outstandingvalue hot-hatches.
Cameron revs up for street racing DAVID CAMERON has announced plans to give local authorities the power to close public roads for motor sport events.
The Prime Minister confirmed at the official opening of the new Williams Formula One factory in Oxfordshire that the Government
plans to relax current restrictions, as long as relevant safety considerations are observed. “We have a great tradition of motorsport in this country, and we are bringing British motor-racing back to British roads to benefit local communities,” he said, at the Grove ceremony. “As part of our longterm economic plan, we are backing our world-
leading motorsport industry to support jobs, enhance skills and help us build a more resilient economy.” Local authorities can authorise road closures for sporting and leisure events right now, but not for motor-racing. And they cannot suspend the Road Traffic Act, which means speed limits, traffic signals, and road-legal vehicle regulations are
still enforceable. The Coalition hope this initiative will help boost the economy when it comes into effect, much like the current Tour de France. The world’s most prestigious cycle race, still being contested, began in Leeds, moved down through Yorkshire and finished its third stage in London. It attracted an estimated three million
spectators, who lined the streets along the entire route. If motor sports can attract the same pulling power, this latest legislation could be worth as much as £40 million to local communities over the next five years. That’s if, of course, the industry can live up to expectations and stage as many as 20 events nationwide
each year. But don’t expect to see F1 machines roaring around our towns any time soon. Formula One fuels its own industry, with crowds paying top dollar at every event, and huge sponsorships embraced by the top teams. And anyway, the noise of the engines, though much quieter these days, would still not be tolerated by residents.

Oasis Fm retain Cyder Cup CYDER CUP 2 was another roaring success at Costa Adeje Golf on Sunday, with Oasis Fm again taking the honours.
A full complement of 72 players were split into two equal-standard teams in a two-man Texas Scramble format.
Every hole counted and, just like last year, there was little to choose between the two sides. After the golf and, as the scorecards were coming in, both sides were confident of victory. Sky Sports’ Chris Kamara, playing for Blacktower FM, was all smiles. His captain, Adi Benson, was extremely confident and even
started preparing his winners’ speech. But he was left crestfallen when it was announced that Oasis Fm had got home 181161. Their captain, Roscoe, said: “The competition was fierce and, like last year, it came down to just one or two holes per match. “To win this again is special, and I’m sure we will complete the
hat-trick in 2015.” Individual honours went to James and Owen Kressinger-Dunn, Andy Palmer, Paddy Davies and Maria Teresa Dominguez. A big thank-you to Chris and John at Oasis Fm, and Michel Lorenz, for their organisation, and to Ally Kerr and Laura Mann from Blacktower Financial Management for their continued support.

By Adi Benson THE curtain has come down on the FIFA World Cup 2014, with the Germans claiming the golden prize.
It was their fourth World Cup success - and the first as a united nation - and they were the first European team ever to win the trophy on South American soil! I’ve got to say that it has been one of the best World Cups I have seen. It had everything, from a pantomime villain through to a national embarrassment, and let’s not forget the high standard of football. The opening ceremony was shambolic on so many levels, but the football didn’t disappoint. And it was, in many cases, a real underdogs’ performance. Teams such as Costa Rica and the US left Brazil with heads held high. But the Team of the Tournament had to Germany. Had they not won the final, they would still get the accolade based on their 7-1 semi-final dem-

olition of Brazil. It was a game nobody will forget: 26 minutes of sheer brilliance from the Germans, and a Brazilian master-class in how not to defend. A nation was embarrassed by its team’s dreadful performance - the likes of which we may never witness again at a World Cup. Player of the Tournament award was given to Lionel Messi! Yeah; I’m still scratching my
head as well! For me, Columbia’s James Rodriguez epitomised everything that used to be good about Brazil. He performed fantastically well for his team and deserved all the plaudits that came his way. He also picked up the Golden Boot as top goal-scorer with six. And for me, he also scored goal of the tournament with his volley against Uruguay. It was absolutely world
class, and may just have earned him a move to Real Madrid. Performance of the competition was difficult to pick after the Brazil-Germany game, but I’m going for the US against Belgium. It was a real end-to end-game and, yes, America’s Tim Howard was the busier of the two keepers. But his brilliance inspired his team-mates, who fought until the final whistle of
extra-time. The American people were still not crazy about “soccer” before the tournament. But this team have changed that perception. The MLS crowds will now get bigger, and more money will be invested in the game there. Will the US ever win the World Cup? Don’t bet against it! With so many good performances, what about the bad? Well, a certain Luis Suarez was up to his old tricks, and he was rightly banned for yet another biting incident. At previous World Cups, his behaviour might have been the biggest story. But because of the excellent of Brazil 2014, it became old news fairly quickly. England also fit into this category; I had to keep reminding myself that they had actually been in the tournament. They arrived in Brazil without the usual expectations, or so the national press wanted us to believe. But it did
not help because three underwhelming performances saw them take an early plane home. There were plus points against Italy, but only the 2-1 defeat will be remembered - same against a Suarez-inspired Uruguay and Costa Rica. I believe we just have to face the facts that, as a nation, we are just not good enough at international level. Much has been said about the German blueprint, but it will never be followed by the FA because we are not prepared to wait and build for 10 years, England supporters crave immediate results. Now the dust has settled, FIFA have announced the latest world rankings - and England have dropped to 20th. Even the US are now above us, but, more worryingly, we are just seven places in front of Scotland. And that’s the tormenting thought I will leave you with! In the meantime, bring on the new Premier League season!
CD Tenerife news
Crespo in… and out! By Roscoe THE day after the World Cup finished, the new football season got underway! Well, it certainly did for the CD Tenerife players as they began the joy that is pre-season. Anyone who has played to a decent standard will tell you the first week is hell. And that is where Tenerife’s director of football Alfonso Serrano was by late afternoon on Monday. He had managed just two signings, and before Ivan Crespo had walked into the training ground, the keeper was gone! Officially, Crespo had his contract torn up be-
cause of “family problems”. But the whisper was that his medical examination was so bad, the club and the player decided to cut and run. On Monday morning, all the players had a thorough going-over - and the men in white coats were not best pleased. There was some comfort for Serrano later in the day when he signed decent centre-back Unai Albizua on loan from Athletic Bilbao. He is still rated by his parent club, and he is tough no-nonsense defender. It’s a smart signing. There is still no news of a main striker to replace Ayoze, who seems to be blending into the Newcastle squad just fine, as our picture
shows. Long-time target Angel has joined La Liga new boys Eibar. Brighton’s David Rodriguez doesn’t seem keen on the move here, while Jona has joined the Tenerife old boys at Cadiz. Compostela’s Joselu, who hit 30 goals in Segunda B, has snubbed us, Almeria and Albacete to join Racing Ferrol. And on top of that, Nino’s return looks dead in the water. Osasuna have been trying to off-load him since January, but have, remarkably, now offered him a seasonlong deal. But Tenerife did get Aday off the books. He has joined Girona, and Abel should join him out of Santa Cruz in the next few days.
