Drivers dice with death by texting behind wheel

IT has happened to all of us while driving … the familiar tone that tells us we have a message.

And no matter how much we try to blot it out, we have that urge. Or is it a need to find out what it is? But the very second we reach out for our mobile, we are putting everyone’s life in danger. New research suggests that the receiving or sending of messages on mobile devices is now the No.1 road risk. This month across Europe, there are various new road-safety campaigns aimed at the usual dangers: speed, drink-driving, looking out for bikes and pedestrians - and especially texting! On the whole, drivers in Spain resist the urge to go for the phone. The latest research suggests that “only” 20% of drivers on Spanish roads text while behind the wheel. In the UK that figure is 40%. America is 33% and the naughty Portugese register a headshaking 59%. But even 20% is too high. If you get caught

using your phone, you can be fined anywhere from 100 euros to 500 euros. And you even run the risk of being banned. The standard texting fine when driving in Tenerife is 200 euros. You will also lose three points from your licence. And if you cause a crash while texting, you will face the same punishment as if you had spoken on the device. According to reports this week, Spanish lawmakers are keeping an eye on a new initiative which will begin shortly in the UK. Police there will be given the power to seize the mobile phone from every driver in a crash, regardless of the severity. The phone will then be sent away to be analysed to ascertain if it were being used in the minutes leading up to an incident. It would then provide a large plank of any prosecution case - and could also be used to settle insurance disputes. The new initiative has been welcomed by charities and pressure groups. But some experts fear that officers may not always use common sense. Their main concern is that

a simple shunt could leave an innocent person phoneless for weeks. There is also the possibility that a confiscated phone would prevent crash victims contacting relatives and, of course, from being contacted. It is clear that something has to be done about the text-and drive culture. All of us see this event happening on a daily basis, and in the UK last year more than 500 people were killed or seriously injured because car and lorry drivers were texting. In Canada, there were over 100,000 text-related crashes in 2013, while in America that figure was closer to 600,000, with 5,000 deaths. Some of the statistics are frightening. In

America, 11% of all drivers aged between 18 and 20 have been involved in a crash caused by texting. According to the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, a truck driver texting raises the probability by 23 times of that person being in a crash. In Ontario, Canada, a third of all accidents are caused by a driver using a mobile device. Chief Superintendent Don Bell, Ontario Provincial Police Highway Safety Division commander, said: “Most people would not get into a vehicle with a drunk driver. And they are at just as much risk in the presence of a distracted driver (one who is texting) as an impaired and drunk driver.”

In the UK, Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said he was doubling the penaltypoint punishment for those caught texting at the wheel. “The amount of casualties has been absolutely appalling and we’ve got to change this.” he warned. The idea of confiscating phones will give police a cast-iron account of what the driver has been doing. Accurate time codes and stamps will nail the reckless, to the relief of AA president Edmund King. “The current deterrent just isn’t working,” he said. “Many drivers seem addicted to their phones and just can’t resist looking at a text or tweet at the wheel. “We need a concerted effort to crack this addiction, with harsher penalties linked to an information and enforcement campaign.” Ireland has recently based tougher laws on the use of mobile devices. Drivers caught texting will be given a mandatory court summons and an immediate fine. Their new rules mean that motorists caught texting or “accessing information” on their

phones will face a mandatory court appearance - and a fine of up to 1,000 euros for a first offence. This will rise to a maximum of 2,000 euros for a second offence, and a possible three-month jail sentence. In the UK, anyone who causes a crash and kills someone while using a phone could be jailed for 14 years. And if you are convicted of using a mobile device, you could be forced to take a road-safety course. This goes alongside today’s standard fixedpenalty notice of £100 and three points on your licence. Texting behind the wheel is not solely an automobile problem. This week marked the first anniversary of the Santiago de Compostela train crash, which killed 79 people and left many more seriously injured. Francisco Jose Garzon de Amo, the 52-year-old driver, was texting as his train hit 95mph in a 50mph zone as it approached a corner. Prosecutors claim the train was actually going 120mph before de Amo applied the brakes. All 13 carriages derailed and four overturned.

Fire-fighting cargo plane stands by to halt danger! LA GOMERA this week received the cargo plane which will greatly help the Canary Islands in the event of major forest fires.

Government delegate Luis Molina was presented with the Air Tractor 802, which will be based on the island. It will serve the whole archipelago, is suited to the specific conditions of the islands and has an impressive load capacity of 3,100 litres. This new aircraft will be operational until 31st October and will spring into action at the request of the Ministry of

Agriculture, Food and Environment through the Directorate General of Rural Development and Forestry Policy.

Maria Elena Trujillo, La Gomera’s Central Government representative, and Javier Trujillo, also a Govern-

ment deputy in Las Palmas, received the plane, which will be here for the next two summers. The cargo plane is in-

valuable in stopping fires, especially in overcoming difficult terrain. Its technical ability allows a first water attack, or a slower extended attack on any fires, regardless of their intensity. The plane’s high-tech spec enables it to shed water alone, or mixed with additives such as foam or retardants. This is dispersed using a state-of-the-art system on its bespoke computer. This aircraft joins the current fleet of firefighters deployed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment on the islands. The fleet includes 2 SOKOL bell helicopters and other 14 specialist airborne units, includ-

ing a Kamov helicopter. This is the extinguishing type K32A 11 BC, with a discharge capacity of 4,500 litres. It is based at the Tenerife North-Los Rodeos airport. There are also two battalions stationed on the islands, each featuring 150 highly-skilled personnel. And among the equipment available for them to meet the fire-fighting efforts include 15 fire engines and four subsidiary vehicles. At last, the Canary Islands appear to have the right equipment, manpower and knowhow to tackle the dreadful fires which have plagued Tenerife and La Gomera, especially, throughout the years.

There were sad scenes on La Tejita beach last weekend when a stricken dolphin died despite a remarkable rescue effort from bathers and members of the public. A stricken dolphin beached in full view of the busy tourist area and immediately people clambered to help. Bathers, aided by local police tried desperately to save the dolphins life but despite their best efforts the mammal finally died. The body was taken by members of the Cabildo to the Aquapark in San Eugenio where a post mortem will take place. Photos: Diario de Avisos

So much for the Russian Revolution! THOUGH relatively still small in numbers, the Russian community is growing in the Islands.

Long-term residential and business immigration continues to increase year on year, while there are clear reductions in the British and German sectors. But the so called Russian invasion is clearly not happening. For the last few years businesses have focussed on the lucrative Russian rouble. Whilst the number of tourists continues to climb, the number of visitors and now it seems residents, is not what the grapevine was expecting. According to official figures the Russian presence in the Canaries is still small in number - just 2,900 residents according to official data from the

census of 2014. Russian residents in general have high purchasing power, which is dovetailing with the increased shopping options here in the South. “They come to Spain with capital. They are looking for business and real-estate opportunities - and they are here to stay,” says Josephine Dominguez, Professor of Human Geography at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) and scholar of the phenomenon of migration. Their interest in the “bargain” property market on the islands is also a reason for them heading here rather than the mainland. It is not, therefore, an employment immigration, but residential. The number of Russian residents now here represents a 46% increase - almost 1,000 people in absolute numbers - from just

three years ago. In the same period, from 2011, Brits have slipped from almost 41,900 to just over 32,300. The fall has been even greater in the German community (44,500 down to 32,900), with France, Italy and Belgium also experiencing declines. And our Russian residents favour the South: Adeje has 878 official citizens and Arona 512. Yet there are just 87 of them officially living in Santa Cruz! But while the Russian tourist section continues to grow, like the residency figures they have a long way to go to become a dominant player in the foreign market here. The Russians may be coming … but it’s a trickle rather than a flood. They are spenders but the bottom line is the long forecast rouble boom is not happening.

Tune in to Starmus - and Ask Hawking THE Starmus Festival has announced another novelty for next month’s Tenerife convention with an Ask Hawking competition.

It is a new attraction which helps make this one of the most eagerly-awaited scientific encounters of 2014, with the Canary Islands as the worldwide meeting point for astronomy, astrophysics and space exploration. Starmus takes a further step forward by allowing the public to put questions to one of the leading lights of contemporary science: Stephen Hawking. August, Until 29th the non-professional public will be able to participate in the Ask Hawking competition through their accreditation at the festival or,

for those not attending, through its Facebook page. The jury will publish the four winners on 1st

September: Three will be chosen from Festival attendees and one from the public who won’t be there.

Canaries’ health service depleted and depressed! NEW figures out this week paint a depressing picture of the Canary Health System.

They reveal that almost 800 staff have been lost in just three years. And it is confirmation of what has long been suggested by professional associations and labour unions. The Spanish Ministry of Finance findings shows that since 2010, the archipelago health institutions have dispensed with 775 workers. And that total will, presumably, increase further later this year when the Ministry makes public the data from the second half of 2014. According to official statistics, there were 24,516 working health professionals in the Canarian Health Service (SCS) in January 2010, compared with 23,741

serving in January this year. Most of them are women (16,697) with just 7,044 men. And by province, Las Palmas has 12,755 staff in health institutions - nearly 2,000 more than Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s 10,986. And the problem is getting worse. Taking into account the size of the islands and the increase in population, the number should be increasing. The unions are citing the controversial Royal Decree of 30th December 2011, which ordered a freeze on public jobs. However, the health sector and, it seems, the education sector, have seen staffing numbers decrease by 10%. That’s not down to redundancies, however, but a lack of replacements for those who have left the service for various reasons: Death, retirement, pregnancy,

or a switch to the private sector. And it’s not just a shortage of staff that concerns the Canary health sector. The ratio of professionals to patient is down, as is the number of beds per capita in the archipelago. Data from the actual National Health System (NHS) shows the islands have just 1.5 beds per 1,000 inhabitants. This is far lower than the national average of 2.5 beds per 1,000 inhabitants. The World Health Organisation is said to be aware of this disturbing figure. Finally, the shortage of nurses in the Canaries continues to cause anxiety because there are just 2.4 nurses per 1,000 people in the population, That’s way below the national average (5.3), and light years away from the 8.7 average of all EU countries.

They will put their question personally to Stephen Hawking on

stage at the Festival, to experience a unique moment with the renowned scientist. Starmus, advanced by Garik Israelian, an astrophysicist from the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands, and sponsored jointly by the Canaries’ Government and the Tenerife Provincial Council, is the standout encounter in the field of popular science. The Festival offers an original format, in which music and the stars come together in Tenerife from 22nd-27th September. Entitled Beginnings. The Making Of The Modern Cosmos, this second edition boasts a stellar panel of speakers such as Hawking; evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, plus Queen guitarist and astrophysicist Brian May.

Tenerife, “one of the best places in the world for stargazing”, according to the Starlight Foundation, is the exceptional venue for the Festival, consolidating its reputation as the most relevant astrotourist destination. Little wonder the Tenerife Provincial Council is currently heading the European Commission-funded EU Sky Route project, which bids to consolidate astro-tourist routes around Europe, these being a powerful differentiating feature for the destination. Rajoy praises Spain’s huge jobs’ about-turn PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy has paid tribute to the people of Spain for turning the unemployment situation around in the past three months.

Rajoy, speaking at the 2nd International Forum on Public Employment Policies in Madrid, stressed that structural reforms and the “enormous effort” by Spanish society as a whole had sparked a cycle change in the labour market - and the start of net job creation. Based on data from the Labour Force Survey (EPA) on the second quarter of 2014, Rajoy said the economy had created 402,400 net jobs - the highest employment increase in a single quarter since 2005. “You can rest assured that I have been waiting a long time - since I took office, to be precise - to be able to give you this news,” said a delighted yet relieved Prime Minister. That was his message at the official opening of the Forum in Madrid on 24-25th 25 July, attended by high-ranking

officials from almost 50 countries, as well as national and international experts. When considering the recent figures, he said, the EPA data “confirm that this improvement is not a temporary phenomenon but, rather, structural in nature”. The PM said the efforts made by the Spanish people as a whole, and the Spanish Government reforms “are producing results”. He added: “The relationship between economic activity and employment is currently the best it has ever

been in the history of Spain, given that net employment has never been created with low levels of economic growth.” Rajoy underlined three major aspects of the employment growth: the 180,200 increase in permanent employment - the highest in a second quarter of the year since 2007; the increase in private employment, with 393,500 more people in work than in the first quarter of the year; and the growth in fulltime employment by 304,400. And the jobless figure

has fallen by 310,400 in the last three months – “an unprecedented reduction in the records kept by the Spanish National Statistics Institute”, said Rajoy. When compared with the same period last year, the number of unemployed has fallen by 424,500. “We have managed to stop the rot,” he said. “Unemployment has gone from an increase of 12.5% when we approved the labour reform to a reduction of 7% in this second quarter of the year. “I believe these are positive figures. But

with an unemployment rate still over 24% of our labour force - over 50% among our young people - there is still a lot more to be done.” Rajoy argued that this task “falls on the public authorities, business leaders, workers and the social stakeholders”, whom he encouraged to renew the collective -bargaining agreement they approved two years ago. “It has been tremendously useful in combating unemployment,” he stressed. As for his Government, Rajoy said it would continue working on labour market reforms - especially with active employment policies. And also on such measures as the Annual Employment Plans and the Spanish Activation Strategy 2014-2016, the Employment and Self-Employment Portal - which is already offering 85,000 jobs - and a new regulatory framework for Vocational Training. This, he said, was a means to improve the employability of workers and the competitiveness of companies, which will “soon” be available. The PM believes “one of the best ways

to know a society is to ask oneself what opportunities it offers to its citizens, how it treats those in the worst situation and how it tries to include those who have been excluded”. Offering job opportunities to those who seek work will continue to be the Spanish Government’s priority because, he said “The impact of the crisis on unemployment has helped us see more clearly than ever, that employment is the social policy par-excellence, the veritable backbone, of our welfare system.” To this end, Rajoy highlighted the importance of combating youth unemployment, putting an end to duality in the labour market, fostering equality between men and women at work and offering “new incentives to those at risk of being excluded”. He concluded: “A society cannot be truly more prosperous if it is not a fairer society; a country cannot progress if its citizens are not progressing. “And this magnificent future project that is Spain will succeed only if it is one on which we all work together, pulling in the same direction.”

A handsome challenge by new Socialist Party chief THE new leader of Spain’s main opposition Socialist Party has pledged to lead the party back to power and get the crisis-hit country “back on track”.

Pedro Sanchez, 42-year-old economist who was virtually unheard of a few months ago, said Spain was “exasperated, angry

and hurt after six years of unprecedented economic crisis.” He expressed his own ire during his inaugural speech at an extraordinary party congress in Madrid. “We are standing up again to get Spain back on track,” he said, to the applause of some 3,000 party delegates at the congress. Sanchez won 49% of the votes cast by 130,000 party members in a primary held on 13th July.

It put plenty of daylight between himself and Basque lawmaker Eduardo Madina, who finished second with 36%. Sanchez replaces veteran politician Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, 62, who stepped down in May after the Socialists suffered their worstever election showing in a European Parliament vote. Spain General Elections will be held next year, and Sanchez, a

tall, married father of two, nicknamed “El Guapo” or “The Handsome One”, sees himself as a fresh face, driving the party forward. He believes he is a credible challenger to the conservative Popular Party which ousted the Socialists from power in a crushing November 2011 election defeat. The Socialists have struggled to overcome criticism of how their last government han-

dled an economic crisis, sparked by the collapse of a property boom in 2008 which has left one in four people out of work. In campaigning, Sanchez fought to fend off the challenge from Podemos, a leftist protest party which did well in the European polls. In his speech, Sanchez said that if the Socialists were swept back to power in 2015, they would scrap a labour

law reform introduced by the ruling Popular Party which makes it cheaper and easier to sack workers. Sanchez has a Master’s degree in politics and economics from a Belgian university. He served as a top aide to the head of a UN high representative during the war in Kosovo. He has since served on and off as a non-elected regional deputy in Madrid.

Spain’s ‘legal’ dope-smokers BARCELONA, with its countless cannabis clubs, is now rivalling Amsterdam as a “safe” haven for dope smokers.

The editor says...

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

Pointless IT has been quite a week for anniversaries and birthdays.

And this weekend, if you get the time and you are passing Los Cristianos, nip in and enjoy the birthday celebrations at Merry Monk (tomorrow) and Springers (Sunday). The world remembered the 100th anniversary of the Great War on Monday. There were some excellent documentaries on television, and some fine historical and comment pieces in the newspapers. I’ve always loved history, and I find wars fascinating. Of course, you have to tread carefully with the content as the old adage is often true: history is written by the winners. But watching and reading about the First World War, one inescapable fact kept reappearing in my head. It should never have happened! They say pride comes before a fall. It’s almost as though the leaders sleep-walked into battle. They didn’t even try to find a solution. Both the Allies and the so-called “Central Power” (Germany, Bulgaria, Austria, Hungary and the Ottoman Empire) were so convinced they couldn’t lose that they couldn’t be bother to even think about peace. They were like gamblers on a blackjack table, slowly upping the stakes to chase their losses. But the losses

were flesh and bone. Edmund Blackadder: Don’t forget your stick, Lieutenant. Lieutenant George: Rather, sir. Wouldn’t want to face a machine gun without this. Melchett: Well, fine body of men you’ve got out there, Blackadder. --------------Edmund Blackadder: Yes, sir … about to become fine bodies of men. --------------By the end of the war, that would be nearly 10,000,000 bodies, 8,000,000 missing in action and 21,000,000 wounded.

On a happier note we are celebrating at HQ - in fact, it’s a double happy birthday. Canarian Weekly is 17 years old this weekend and on Monday, Oasis Fm will also be 17. I had the pleasure of playing the first song - Live Forever, by Oasis. I thought it was apt!

Pachamama, one of those clubs, could almost be someone’s lounge, with its shelves of books and board games. But a swift glance tells you differently because there’s a hookah pipe, and photographs of hemp plants like the ones grown by the club. “This is the safest way to know what I am smoking and, at the same time, avoid participating in the black market,” says Susana, a 27-year-old shop assistant, who sports dyed red curly hair. Smokers’ groups acknowledge that some 700 such associations have sprung up in Spain because of a legal loophole. Cannabis dealing is illegal in Spain, yet the law does not penalise growing it for private consumption; nor setting up smokers’ associations. But the authorities are getting concerned, however, and Barcelona city hall has imposed a moratorium on associations opening premises for smoking the drug. Not surprisingly, regional authorities also want new rules on cannabis. Antoni Mateu, Catalonia’s Public Health chief, says: “These clubs have spread through a lack of regulation. “Our priority is to discourage consumption, but a regulation is required to curb it.” Some 50% of Spain’s cannabis clubs are in Barcelona, which tops the rankings on WeBe-

High, a travel-advice website for soft-drug users. There are also many clubs in the northwestern Basque region, whose regional government is currently drawing up new regulations for cannabis use. “Since it is not regulated, it is not legal,” said Jaume Xaus, spokesman for the Catalonia Federation of Cannabis Associations. “But no one knows, either, what paperwork you have to have; nor how to prove to the police, if they come, that what we are doing is not breaking the law.” For two years, Susana has come once a week to Pachamama to buy five grams (just under 1/5th oz) of marijuana). She sometimes brings her parents along as well “You have to consume responsibly and be conscious of what it entails,” she says. “But it is the same with medicine, alcohol

and tobacco.” Wouldbe members must be over 18 and must be recommended by an existing member. They must also be able to show they are habitual smokers. The club’s 186 current members pay an annual 10-euro subscription, plus a variable fee to cover the cost of producing the cannabis they consume. And 28-year-old Patricia, who founded Pachamama in 2012 in Barcelona’s trendy Gracia district, said defiantly: “This is not a potheads’ club.” Like the other members, she does not to be identified by her surname. “Here, we control the consumption,” she said. “We inform members about the effects of smoking, and we ensure a quality product. We have nothing to hide - we are not doing anything wrong.” Penal law specialist Juan Munoz concurs,

saying: “A cannabis club is legal as long as it controls consumption and refrains from advertising and distributing the drug for profit.” Some clubs are suspected of over-stepping the mark, however, venturing beyond their non-profit association activities into full-blown drug-dealing. Mateu admitted: “Some cases have been discovered of clubs promoting consumption among tourists, supplying to traffickers and minors. And some have also had problems with the neighbours.” Martin Barriuso, spokesman for the Spanish Federation of Cannabis Associations, acknowledged that some “bad practices” have emerged. “We have reported them,” he said. “But it is hard to control without a clear regulation that separates the wheat from the chaff.”

Honest cabbie’s grand gesture AN honest taxi driver made sure a tourist’s holiday was not ruined, after reuniting him with a lost wallet containing 1,000 euros in cash! The Hotel Association and Extrahotelera Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro (Ashotel), revealed the amazing story. And it applauded the “honesty and professionalism” of the unnamed cabbie, who returned the wallet lost at Reina Sofia Airport by a tourist heading for Granadilla. The driver discovered the wallet in his taxi on Sunday, but there was no ID, passport, credit cards or even a simple name card. There was, however, a photocopy of the reservation for a hotel in the South of Tenerife. The taxi driver then alerted the airport’s National Police, who called at the hotel and were able to track down the delighted tourist. The police then arranged for the

grateful holiday-maker to meet the taxi driver. As you can imagine, the tourist thanked the driver - and expressed his immense gratitude! Ashotel President Jorge Marichal said: “The driver is a great example of what we strive to achieve here. “By trying desperately to contact the tourist, who had just arrived on the Island, shows just how professional his sector can be. “His selfless and thoughtful act shows again why Tenerife and the Canary Islands is such a popular tourist destination.” Marichal, on behalf of the hotels, thanked the driver for his good work and responsibility shown by professional taxi drivers. He added: “This event shows the true nature of those who live and work in the Canary Islands. “And it’s one of the reasons why tourists choose the archipelago for their holidays.”

Another amazing August is ahead TOURIST occupation in Tenerife this month will exceed 80% - and the final figures should match those of the same 2013 period.

That’s the forecast by Ashotel manager Juan Pablo González, who is also expecting a flood of last-minute bookings. The South currently has an 86% occupancy rate, which should top 90% by the end of August. Gonzalez said: “2014 has seen another good performance for the hotel industry, especially the higher-end market. “The four and five-star hotels are exceeding our forecast. Tenerife has the required difference and quality our holidaymakers expect, especially the European and Russian visitors. “The North is looking

at around 70%, while Santa Cruz is about 45% - normal for the capital’s figures at this time of year.” He added: “La Palma is also doing okay. Occupancy there is, as expected, 65%, while La Gomera has exceeded expectations at 80%. However, most of this is in the apartment rather than hotel trade.”

Gonzalez is convinced that the rest of the year will also see growth, saying: “Our beautiful islands are set for good things, especially La Palma, which will be back at the top of the population percentages this winter. “I see no problems with where we are heading in terms of our visitor figures.

“In the case of El Hierro, it is still reeling from the recent, well-documented seismic activities. The natural phenomenon has seen us lose a great opportunity for the island to really move forward on the back of some solid years. “Tourists visiting El Hierro are still praising the quality of the island and hotels, and they haven’t lost their spending power! “But we do need some stability, and a new water link with Tenerife is absolutely essential.” According to Gonzalez, there is a “small” national tourism recovery, but there is still a lot of work to do to get the mainland tourists back to the pre crisis level. This is mainly down to the “very high” prices of airline tickets, and the greater competition from mainland destinations.

toes, melons, cucumbers and strawberries. “The core problem is the cost disparity with Spain, which means we can’t be competitive,” he said. But Spain’s FEPEX federation of fruit-growers and exporters denied the

French accusations. “The fruit crisis is affecting all European producers,” it said, criticising recent attacks on Spanish trucks. The federation also called on the European Union to take urgent steps to support the

fruit market, underlining the importance of the fruit sector to Spain’s economy. Last year, Spain exported 910,000 tonnes of fruit with stones (peaches and the like), bringing in nearly one billion euros.

Spanish take cream of the crop in ‘peach war’ FRENCH officials are increasing cargo checks on trucks carrying fruit over the border from Spain.

It has been labelled a “peach war” between the EU neighbours, with 150 trucks stopped and 10 infractions recorded in the past fortnight or so. The French Agriculture Ministry this week met their fruit growers, who complained of what they see as unfair “dumping” of produce in their home market. France, which intends to make sure the trucks “respect the rules for the sale of fruit and vegetables”, will continue its campaign in the coming weeks, Agriculture Minister Stephane Le Foll said after the meeting that the European Commission had been asked by

France, Spain, Greece and Italy to consider putting in place “exceptional market-managing measures” in the sector. The French fruit-growers’ fury is boiling over amid fears that their industry is on the verge of disappearing entirely because of the huge drop in prices. Farmland across France, given over to growing peaches and nectarines, has halved in size over the past decade. Luc Barbier, head of French fruit-growers’ federation FNPFsaid the conflict between French and Spanish producers had never been so bad. He accused the Spanish counterparts of practising “trade-dumping to kill the French market in order to be the only suppliers”. And he called for stepped-up border checks to verify the ori-

gin, quality and price of fruit cargos. Xavier Beulin, head of the broader FNSEA farmers’ federation, said the problem went beyond peaches and nectarines. He said the dispute also impacted farmers selling toma-

David Cameron said the “magnetic pull” of UK benefits had to be addressed so that people came for the right reasons and the rules “put Britain first”. The Prime Minister also warned illegal immigrants: “We will find you - we will send you home!” But Labour said the PM’s rhetoric masked a record of “failure” on immigration and “firm action” was needed. Ministers have been reluctant to say how many people are likely to be affected by benefit curbs, although BBC research suggests it will be no more than about 10,000. Norman Smith, BBC News Channel’s chief political correspondent, said it was more about sending a message to UKIP voters, and showing that the Government was more serious about tackling immigration than saving money. European Union officials have said there is no evidence to show migrants move to Britain to claim benefits.

Ministers have been reluctant to say how many people are likely to be affected by the benefit curbs but have claimed the changes could save £500m over five years. But the office for Budget Responsibility distanced itself from that figure, saying it was an estimate that related to a wider package of benefit curbs and compliance checks announced in the March Budget. Jonathan Todd, European Commission spokesman, said: “Migrant workers are of immense, economic benefit to the member states in terms, in particular, of responding to skills’ gaps and labour shortages,” The Commission will scrutinise the new measures carefully to ensure they comply with EU law. Mr Cameron, while on a visit to see immigration officers at work, said: “We want an immigration system that puts Britain first. “So if you come here illegally, we will make it harder for you to have a home, to get a car, to get a job, to get a bank account. “And when we find you - and we will find you – we’ll make sure you are sent back to the country you came from.” The PM unveiled details in Tuesday’s Daily

Telegraph of plans to curb the rights to claim some benefits for some EU nationals who are legally in the UK He said the last Labour Government presided over a “no-questionsasked” welfare system, which “drew migrants to the country for the wrong reasons”. Cameron cited other measures recently coming into force to tackle abuses, such as new powers revoking the driving licences of those not entitled to be in the country, as evidence that the Government was building “an immigration system that

puts Britain first”. The PM added: “We are making sure people come for the right reasons - which has meant addressing the magnetic pull of Britain’s benefits system. “We change the rules so that no one can come to this country and expect to get out-of-work benefits immediately. They must wait at least three months. “And we are cutting the time people can claim these benefits. It used to be that European jobseekers could claim JSA or child benefit for a maximum of six months before their

Man killed by freak LA lightning

LIGHTNING struck more than a dozen people at a popular Los Angeles beach, killing a 20-year-old man.

The incident happened during a series of frightening, Southern California thunderstorms as the sky turned black. He was taken from Venice Beach and later pronounced dead in hospital. Another 12 beach-goers were treated and nine people, including a 15-year-old

boy, were also treated in hospital. One was said to be “critical”, while others were in a “fair” condition. Some of the injured were in the water and others on the busy beach’s famed boardwalk when the lightning struck. A 14th person, a 57-yeat-old man, was hit on a golf course on Catalina Island, also in Southern California. He was later said to be in a stable condition. Witnesses described scenes of panic as the sky darkened and lightning erupted shortly af-

terwards, with thunder and rain. Angelica Roquemore told the Los Angeles Times: “You could hear everybody screaming,” Stuart Acher said he was struck by lightning while playing volleyball on the beach. “We went about our game and then all of a sudden, there was a big flash of light and a boom,” he told the local TV station. “It felt as though someone had punched me in the back of my head. It went down the whole side of my right body, my calves

sort of locked up, and I fell over. And everyone else was falling down as well.” Roger Davis said his house shook and that he heard explosions. When he ran outside, his neighbour - a doctor - was administering CPR to a victim. Authorities say the thunderstorms also sparked at least two small grassland fires, which were put out quickly. Experts put the unusual weather down to monsoon moisture, which brought thunderstorms.

benefits would be cut off, unless they had very clear job prospects. “We will be reducing that cut-off point to three months, saying very clearly that you cannot expect to come to Britain and get something for nothing.” The Government, after coming under political pressure, has been steadily tightening the criteria under which EU migrants are eligible to claim benefits In January, it announced that EU migrants would not be able to claim out-ofwork benefits until three months after arriving in the UK. And they would be eligible for jobseeker’s allowance for six months only, unless they had genuine prospects of finding work. Mr Cameron announced that this time limit - which also applies to child tax credit and child benefit - will be halved to three months from November. He believes his party’s target of reducing net migration to below 100,000 by the time of the next election - from its current level of more than 200,000 - is still achievable. But Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said the Government had failed to take “firm

action” to address the issue. She added: “Behind the rhetoric the true picture of this Government on immigration is one of failure, with net migration going up, despite David Cameron’s promise to get it down to the tens of thousands. “The Government should get a grip and finally implement Labour’s proposals to stop the undercutting of wages and jobs for local workers by the exploitation of low-skilled migrant labour, including banning recruitment agencies that only hire foreign workers, and pressing for stronger controls in Europe.” Steven Woolfe, The UK Independence Party’s migration spokesman, described Cameron’s announcement as “a cynical and vacuous attempt to fool the British public”. He added: “Britain is crying out for an Australian-style points system for migration, so that we can judge potential migrants from all over the world on the same basis: whether they can make a positive contribution to life in our already-overcrowded country. “We will never be able to introduce such a system while we are locked in the EU.” Latest analysis by the Migration Advisory Committee, which advises ministers, suggested the impact of lowskilled immigration on GDP, productivity and prices since 1997 had been “very modest”. The Committee also said there had been virtually no effect on the overall employment rate of UK-born workers. It concluded that lowskilled migration had had a “small” negative impact on the wages of low-paid British workers. Yet there had been knock-on effects on the availability of housing and school places in areas of the country with a disproportionately high level of incomers.

New Finnish routes will be starting soon FINNAIR is expanding its service to Tenerife this winter, with five extra flights a week from Helsinki. That schedule starts next month, and the company will launch the expanded route in September to Tenerife South. The Tenerife North flights begin in October. Cabildo President, Carlos Alonso explained the importance of these connections, saying: “It’s crucial, especially since it will allow more arrivals of Finnish trav-

ellers and other Nordic countries to the Island. “Helsinki is a major city, and it’s important that we connect here. The city also connects many other flights from Russia, so it will be a real boost for tourists who want to come to Tenerife.” The expanded route begins operations in the South Tenerife airport on 19th September and runs until 28th March next year. That will cover the entire winter season, which is the busiest for

Finnish travellers to the Island. The same applies to the connection provided to Tenerife North, which opens on 15th October this year to end on 25th March 2015. Last year, 110,000 Finnish tourists came to Tenerife and a total of over 500,000 from the Nordic countries, which was a 9% increase on 2012. The number of Russian travellers to the Island last year totalled 185,000, representing a whopping 32% increase.

Tragic paraglider may have had a heart attack

A HORRIFIED husband watched his experienced paraglider wife go “spinning” to her death in Adeje last year. An inquest at Gloucester Coroner’s Court heard that 53-year-old Carolyn Dewdney, from Cheltenham, crash-landed in a mountainous region and was pronounced dead at the scene. Mrs Dewdney, who was “eminently experienced”, had been on a week-long paragliding holiday with her husband, Nigel. She began her descent from Ifonche at 11.30am on 13th November, but failed to respond to radio calls from a guide a short time later when he realised she she was having difficulties. Emergency services were called when she was seen “spinning” out of control and her body was later found. There were no immediate signs of injury, apart from a broken arm, and the suggestion was that she might have suffered a heart attack. The inquest was told that Mrs Dewdney was “eminently experienced” and had completed 300 jumps in numerous countries around the world. Katy Skerrett, senior coroner for Gloucestershire, concluded, following the half-hour hearing, that it was an accidental death. “It is clear that Carolyn was a very experienced

paraglider, had done numerous jumps and had been out in Adeje with her husband in the week,” said Mrs Skerrett. “It is clear that they started their jumps at around 11 o’clock that day. Carolyn was starting her descent at 11.30. “She was using her own equipment, which seemed to be very good equipment. She was radioed by her guide, but did not respond to that.” Mrs Skerrett added: “In terms of why it happened when it did, we will never know. “Perhaps she suffered from an acute event related to her heart, or she suffered a momentary lapse of consciousness.” Mr Dewdney said he watched his wife “spinning going down”. He added: “There were no radio messages from Carolyn at any time. “The paramedic found that Carolyn had suffered no external trauma injuries other than a broken arm. “On inspection of Carolyn’s harness and parachute, we found no attempt to throw the rescue parachute had been made. The paramedic thought she might have suffered a heart attack.” Mr Dewdney said his wife had “good flying skills” and had been involved in jumps in several countries. He added: “It is my belief that she suffered a

heart attack mid-flight and knew little or nothing about it.” Henry Wilder, a guide with Para 42, the company which organised the paragliding trip, said he radioed Mrs Dewdney shortly after she began her descent. “I could see her getting into difficulty and she didn’t answer my radio calls,” recalled Mr Wilder. Professor Neil Shepherd, who reviewed the Spanish doctors’ report and examined Mrs Dewdney’s body, said death was actually caused by chest injuries. “Having seen the full report (from Spanish authorities), it clearly indicates external and internal injuries,” said Dr Shepherd. “There were rib fractures, pulmonary lacerations and closed-chest trauma.” The inquest heard that no alcohol or toxic substances were found in Mrs Dewdney’s system during the post-mortem examination. An extract from the Spanish report stated that Mrs Dewdney had died a “violent death”, having suffered from traumatic shock and chest fractures. The coroner told Mrs Dewdney’s family, who were at the inquest: “I wish you all the best, moving forward from this horrific accident that you have had to go through.”

Malaysian Airlines so close to third tragedy MALAYSIA Airlines almost suffered a third, devastating tragedy this year on Wednesday.

The company’s Flight MH136, with 167 passengers on board, was forced to abort a takeoff after learning that it was on a collision course with an incoming airliner. Flight MH136 was already rolling down the Adelaide Airport runway when it had to slam on the brakes. Adelaide Air Traffic Control radioed the Kuala Lumpur-bound flight, with instructions to abort the takeoff, after realising the plane was on a collision course with in incoming jet. Malaysia Airlines Flight MH136 was forced to abort a take-

off after learning that it was on a collision course with an incoming jet. According to Malaysian newspaper New Straits Times, an unflappable official said: “MH136 stopped its take-off safely and waited the required cooldown time on its brakes

before departing from Adelaide.” The Aviation Herald reported that “a Tiger Airways Airbus A320 on approach had been too high and too fast”. Air traffic control reportedly wanted to make sure the Malaysia Airlines A330 “didn’t climb underneath” it.

The incident came just two weeks after another Malaysian Airlines plane, Flight MH17, was shot down in a suspected attack by Russian separatist while flying over Ukraine. Malaysia Airlines’ Flight MH370 attracted worldwide media attention after it went miss-

ing while travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The flight deviated from its intended path, making a U-turn and heading out towards the Bay of Bengal, before it dropped off of military radar. To date, no trace of the plane - or the 239

passengers and crew on board - has ever been found, despite widespread sea searches for debris. Theories about the disappearance include a cockpit fire, the smoke from which could have knocked the pilots unconscious, leaving the plane to drift until it ran out of fuel and dropped into the ocean. Several investigations have also focused on one of the pilots, Zaharie Shah, who had a flight simulator at home and had plotted a route into the southern Indian Ocean in the days before the plane disappeared. Searches are still ongoing in the Indian Ocean for the wreckage. But while hopes have been raised several times by electrical “ping” signals coming from the ocean floor, nothing has yet been found.

Crash plane ‘was hit by A missile’ THE doomed Malaysia Airlines plane crashed because of a “massive explosive decompression” after being hit by shrapnel from a missile.

A Ukrainian security official claims this info came to light when the black box data was examined. Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for Ukraine’s Security Council, said the information was offered by experts analysing the flight recorders from MH17, which was shot down over eastern Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board. Air accident experts in Farnborough, Hampshire, were tasked with downloading data from the two black boxes and

passing the information on to international investigators. Western countries blame rebels for shooting down the airliner with a missile, mistaking it for a Ukrainian plane. But the separatists deny any involvement. Meanwhile, a team of Dutch and Australian police, making a fresh attempt to reach the crash site, were again forced to turn back after

“explosions” in the area. A previous attempt had also been halted by fierce fighting. But Ukraine rebels say they have lost control over part of the MH17 crash site. Andrew Colvin, Australia’s Deputy Commissioner of National Security, said evidence risked being lost amid the continuing clashes. He added that the prospect of finding the remains of all the dead

grew slimmer as time went on. Navi Pillay, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, condemned the “horrendous shooting down” of flight MH17, en-route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. She also demanded a “thorough, effective, independent and impartial investigation”, stressing in a statement: “This violation of international law, given the prevailing circumstances, may amount to a war crime. The UN says around 100,000 people have fled the violence in eastern Ukraine. And Ms Pillay added: “Every effort will be made to ensure that people committing serious violations of international law, including war crimes, will be brought to justice, no

matter who they are,” Plans have been unveiled to stage a special memorial concert in September for victims of MH17 in Amsterdam. The UN also said latest figures showed more than 1,100 people had been killed and nearly 3,500 wounded in fighting in eastern Ukraine since April, with both sides using heavy weapons in built-up areas, including artillery, tanks, rockets and missiles. “Both sides must take great care to prevent more civilians from being killed or injured,” said Ms Pillay. The UN report also accused the rebels of conducting a “brutal reign of intimidation and terror” in the areas they controlled, including the abduction, torture and killing of civilians. The US has released satellite images which,

it claims, show rockets have been fired at Ukraine from within Russia. The images, which come from the US Director of National Intelligence and have not been verified independently, also purport to show that heavy artillery for pro-Russian separatists has crossed the border. Their release appears to be a part of US President Barack Obama’s push to hold Russia accountable for its activities in Ukraine - and persuade European allies to apply harsher sanctions on Moscow. Moscow has denied allegations of involvement in eastern Ukraine, claiming the US is conducting “an unrelenting campaign of slander against Russia, ever more relying on open lies”.

Twisted vet struck off A WARPED vet, filmed having sex with a horse and a dog, has been struck off.

Oliver Fraser Lown of Kesgrave, Suffolk, was found guilty of five charges by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) disciplinary committee. Videos found in his possession showed him engaging in sexual activity with animals, as were extreme images of animals and people, the RCVS heard. Lown, believed to be in his twenties, has never practised as a vet in the UK. The RCVS panel heard that in 2012, he pleaded guilty at Northallerton and Richmond Magistrates Court, in North Yorkshire, to seven criminal

charges. They related to the possession of extreme images involving people and animals, for which he was given a conditional discharge. The RCVS committee heard the Crown Prosecution Service

decided not to prosecute him in respect of a bestiality charge it was considering, but the RCVS found the charge to be proven. Lown had graduated from the Szent Istvan University in Buda-

pest, Hungary, and had been registered with the RCVS in 2013. Lown, who did not attend the RCVS hearing in London, was represented by a solicitor. Three of the charges related to the discov-

ery of images or videos on a laptop, and on a mobile phone at his home near Ipswich. Another charge related to footage of him engaging in sexual activity with a horse and a dog, while a fifth

charge related to him sending messages referring to sexual activity with animals. Prof Noreen Burrows, chairing the committee, said: “The material found in possession of the respondent and his own conduct … involved the abuse of animals and a total lack of respect for their welfare. “In the judgement of the committee, each of the charges individually amounts to disgraceful conduct - and the charges certainly amount to disgraceful conduct when taken cumulatively.” The Disciplinary Committee, to safeguard animal welfare, maintain public confidence in the profession and uphold proper standards of conduct, directed the Registrar to remove Lown’s name from the Register.

London police out to sink website pirates THE City of London police are gunning for piracy-site owners to cut their illegal earnings.

The police are placing banner advertisements on websites believed to be offering pirated content. Their messages, which will appear instead of paid-for ads, will ask users to close their web browsers. The move comes as part of a continuing effort to stop piracy sites from earning money through advertising. Police said the ads would make it harder for piracy-site owners to

make their pages look authentic. “When adverts from well-known brands appear on illegal websites, they lend them a look of legitimacy and, inadvertently, fool consumers into thinking the site is authentic,” said DCI Andy Fyfe, attached to the City of London Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit (Pipcu). “This new initiative is another step forward for the unit in tackling IP crime and disrupting criminal profits. “Copyright infringing websites are making huge sums of money through advert placement. “Therefore, disrupting advertising on these

sites is crucial, and this is why it is an integral part of Operation Creative.” The initiative will make use of technology provided by Project Sunblock - a company used by major brands to stop adverts appearing alongside questionable content, such as pirated material or pornography. Without proper oversight, perfectly legal sites may end up losing good advertising opportunities if they are wrongfully included. Many websites, including those offering pirated content, will use syndication networks to place advertisements on their pages.

Brands use the syndication networks like a wholesaler, and may not be clear what sites their advert will eventually appear on. Project Sunblock detects the content of websites to prevent brands’ ads appearing where they do not want them. When a website on Pipcu’s Infringing Websites List (IWL) tries to display an advert, Project Sunblock will serve the police warning instead. Neither the police nor Project Sunblock are paying the website in question to display the police message. In the past, some have raised concerns about

Pipcu’s process in adding a website to the IWL. Ernesto Van Der Sar is the editor of Torrentfreak, a news site that covers issues around online piracy. And when Pipcu announced its intentions in March this year, Mr Van Der Sar said he worried about the implications. “As with all block-lists, there is a serious risk of overblocking,” he said. “Without proper oversight, perfectly legal sites may end up losing good advertising opportunities if they are wrongfully included.” The battle against online piracy has seen content creators attempt many different strate-

gies to stem the flow of illegal downloading. British courts have ordered internet service providers to block almost 50 different websites offering pirated content, either by direct download or through peer-to-peer sharing. While effective in lowering the traffic of these sites, filtering is a flawed prevention method because many internetusers are adept in using different technologies to circumvent the courtimposed restrictions. This latest attempt looks to hit the owners of these websites in a more painful way - by stopping their illegal advertising revenues from coming in.

Clarkson’s racial slur on Top Gear JEREMY CLARKSON and the BBC have been rapped after the presenter disgraced himself on his motoring programme.

The Top Gear star used a racial slur during a Burma Special, which broke broadcasting rules, says TV watchdog Ofcom. The show featured a segment showing the hosts looking at a bridge they had built on the River Kwai as a local man walked across it. Clarkson said: “That is a proud moment. But there’s a slope on it.” Ofcom, which held an investigation following complaints from two viewers, said the use of the word “slope” was offensive. Producer Andy Wilman said it was “a light-hearted wordplay joke, referencing both the build quality of

the bridge and the local Asian man who was crossing it”. Following Clarkson’s remark, co-star Richard Hammond replied: “You’re right. It’s definitely higher on that side.” Wilman said: “We were not aware at the time, and it has subsequently

been brought to our attention, that the word ‘slope’ is considered by some to be offensive. “And although it might not be widely recognised in the UK, we appreciate that it can be considered offensive to some here and overseas - for example, in Australia and the US.

“If we had known that at the time, we would not have broadcast the word in this context, and we regret any offence caused.” An Ofcom spokesperson said: “After a thorough investigation, Ofcom has found the BBC breached broadcasting rules by including an

offensive racial term in Top Gear, which was not justified by context. “Jeremy Clarkson used the word ‘slope’ to refer both to an Asian man crossing a bridge, and the incline of the bridge. “This was scripted in advance. The BBC failed to take the opportunity, either during filming or post-production, to check whether the word had the potential to offend viewers.” The Burma Special saw hosts Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May film on the border of Myanmar (also known as Burma) and Thailand. The BBC told Ofcom that the programmemakers were aware the word was “used to refer to people of Asian origin”, but they considered “such use was mere slang”. Following the Ofcom ruling the BBC said: “We dealt with this matter some time ago. The pro-

gramme apologised at the time and explained the context, and we are now focusing on delivering another series of one of Britain’s best-loved shows.” The motoring show has faced a number of controversies over the years. In 2011, the BBC apologised after an episode in which Hammond called Mexicans “feckless [and] flatulent”, and Clarkson joked that they would not receive complaints because the Mexican ambassador would be asleep. In May, the Corporation faced calls to fire Clarkson after he mumbled an offensive version of the nursery rhyme Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Moe in a clip which was not broadcast. Clarkson revealed he had been given a final warning and would be sacked if he made “one more offensive remark, anywhere, at any time”.

Give or take a few million years, we could have been…

Walking with DINOSAURS! GIGANTIC dinosaurs, which once roamed the Earth terrorising all and sundry, became extinct after an asteroid crashed into the planet.

Dr Steve Brusatte, of Edinburgh University, who led a new study into the monsters, believes sea-level rises and volcanic activity made many species more susceptible to being wiped out. They might have survived had the asteroid hit the Earth a few million years later or earlier, he added, calling it “colossal bad luck”. The study team’s assessment has been published in the Biological Reviews journal. “It was a perfect storm of events that occurred when dinosaurs were at their most vulnerable,” Dr Brusatte told BBC News. The study brought together 11 leading dinosaur experts from the

UK, US and Canada to assess the latest research on the extinction of dinosaurs 66 million years ago. True, there is evidence that some species of dinosaur were dying off shortly before an asteroid hit the Earth. But one of the key questions was whether this gradual decline would have led to the extinction of these animals, even if the asteroid had not hit. The experts concluded that although some species of plant-eaters in North America were dying out in the period

leading up to the asteroid impact, there was no evidence of a longterm decline. However, the experts believe that rises in sea level and increased volcanic activity made many species more susceptible to extinction, just when the asteroid struck. Dr Brusatte believes that had the asteroid hit the Earth a few million years earlier, before the environmental pressures became worse, or a few million years later, when the dinosaurs might have recovered, they would

be roaming the Earth to this day. “Five million years earlier, dinosaur ecosystems were much stronger, more diverse,” he said. “The base of the food chain was more robust, and it was harder to knock out a lot of species. “If they’d had a few million years more to recover their diversity they would have had a better chance of surviving the asteroid impact. “Dinosaurs had been around for 160 million years. They had plenty of dips and troughs in their diversity, but they always recovered.” The dinosaurs’ demise enabled mammals, including our own species, to diversify and evolve. Dr Brusatte said that but for an asteroid hitting the Earth exactly when it did, we would be living in a dinosaurdominated world. The experts’ intriguing idea raises the question about how dinosaurs might have evolved. Could they have developed in the same way as

mammals, becoming an advanced species similar to modern humans? Dr Richard Butler, from Birmingham University, said: “With evolution, it is certainly possible that dinosaurs could have evolved intelligence.” Professor Simon Conway-Morris, from the University of Cambridge, agrees, but does not go quite as far as Dr Brusatte. “As far as dinosaurs becoming intelligent is concerned, the experiment has been done,” he told BBC News. Prof Conway-Morris added that even if there were no mass extinction, he still believes the dinosaurs would not have carried on to the present day. He said that other groups of animals were more likely to have developed advanced intelligence, and the ability to make tools. “From that moment, the dinosaurs would have been toast,” he added. Others involved in the

study were less bullish than Dr Brusatte. They said that while his arguments were plausible, they felt it impossible to say whether dinosaurs would have survived had the asteroid hit the Earth at a slightly different time. Dr Butler added: “We can’t re-run the tape of life and see whether an impact at a different time would have led to total extinction. But it did come at a particularly bad time.” Dr Paul Barrett, of the Natural History Museum, says the new study shows that types of dinosaurs were already declining in numbers before the asteroid impact. “This new work provides the best evidence for sudden dinosaur extinction,” he said. “And for tying this event to the asteroid impact rather than other possible causes, such as the longer-term effects of the extensive volcanic activity that occurred at the end of the Cretaceous.”

Legal Matters

1st August 2014 - 7th August 2014

By Mariano Zunino Siri

AN Irish national reader wants to know why there are so many laws and regulations in Spain.

He also wants to know how you can distinguish between the “national authority”, the “autonomic authority” and the “local authority”. I’m the first to admit that it’s not an easy task. But I will do my best to summarise thousands of pages written in legal books. Remember, though, that the information in this article is just a guide. Spanish Law is included within the European continental system and is, basically, based on the written law (laws, regulations, by-laws, etc.). It is a complex system involving not only national laws but also Autonomic Community laws. The Constitution of Spain translates as the “Law of the Laws”, which means that is the Supreme Law that regulates the functioning of public bodies and the fundamental rights of the Spanish people, as well as the organisation and competencies of the different autonomous communities. All laws in Spain must be declared compatible with the Constitution (all laws that do not match with the Constitution are null). However, it is clear that

Spanish Law v European Law

a public body is needed to regulate the fulfilment of this. The division of powers is an idea that appeared after the French Revolution. It is applied by the elected, by representatives of the people in the Cortes Generales. This exercises legislative power through two chambers, the Congress of Deputies and the Senate, who choose the Prime Minister (normally called “presidente del gobierno”) and control the actions of the executive power, which must obey the law. The third leg of this division is the “judicial power” (Courts) formed by “Juzgados” (the first step in the judicial sys-

tem) going up to the Supreme Court and Constitutional Court. The law could be divided in public law and private law: Spanish public law 1. Constitutional law: Related to the organisation of the constitutional bodies and the exercise of the citizen’s rights. 2. Administrative law: Regulates the organisation and functioning of the powers and bodies of the state and its relations with individuals. 3. Criminal law: This regulates the punitive actions. 4. Process law: Regulates the legal proceedings. 5. Financial and tax law:

Regulates the financing of the Spanish State and taxes that are applied to citizens. 6. International public law: Laws that regulate the judicial relations between each state and the other members of the international community. 7. European law: Being Spain and a member of the EU, all Spanish law has to be adapted to the European regulations. There is a legal debate in relation to the supremacy of European Law over the Spanish Law. Spanish private law 1. Civil law: Regulates the person, the family, personal assets, contractual relations and

the extra contractual civil responsibility. 2. Commercial law: Collection of laws which regulate law relating to business, within the world of business. 3. Labour or social law: Regulates the relationships between employees and employers. Complaints about social security fall under public law. 4. International private law: Regulates the relationships between physical and judicial persons of different nationalities. Bearing in mind that the Constitution is the supreme law, all regulations that are behind Constitution have to follow the hierarchy

(“jerarquía”). So behind Constitution, there are “International Treaties”, “Strict sense law” (law created by the parliament and regulatory laws) and “regulations”, created by the Executive Power. Besides this, the Spanish Constitution establishes the competency of Comunidades Autonomas concerning the regulation of certain areas, the possibility of creating legal laws through their own Parliaments. In a procedure between the autonomous parliament and the national parliament, the Estatuto de Autonomia exists, which could be the “Constitution” of the Comunidad Autonoma. Back to EC Law, some jurists consider the Constitution to be higher than the European Law, while others think the contrary. This is always theory. In practice, the European Law is considered to be equal to the Constitution. In fact, all laws coming from the EU are directly applied in Spain by virtue of European Union Treaty. Lionel still in fine old messi LIONEL MESSI, the world’s greatest footballer, could still be prosecuted for alleged tax evasion.

A Spanish court is continuing proceedings against the Barcelona superstar, despite a recommendation from the public prosecutor that the charges be dismissed. The prosecutor argued in June that Messi

had nothing to do with dodging the taxman purposely and that his father, Jorge, was responsible for the family’s finances. But the court still believes the Argentina star, voted World Player of the Year four times, could have been involved. The Barcelona court has decided that Messi could have known about and approved the creation of a web of shell companies, which

were allegedly used to evade taxes due on income from his image rights. The judge ruled that the case against both Messis should continue, according to a statement published on Monday. Messi and his father were accused last year of defrauding the Spanish state of more than £3million by filing false returns for the years 2006 to 2009. They have denied

wrong-doing. Messi, one of the world’s highestpaid athletes, earns just over £31million a season in salary and bonuses, according to Forbes magazine, as well as about £18million from sponsors. The magazine rates him fourth top-earning athlete behind boxer Floyd Mayweather, Real Madrid footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and basketball player LeBron James.

A Different View

By Mike Walsh SIR Peter Hall, theatre director and impresario, once said: “Political correctness is just another way of filtering the truth.”

Intolerance is not something of which the human race can be proud, while bigotry is the last refuge of those who, unable to debate, resort to sanctimonious posturing, undermining or twisting the opinions of adversaries. Throughout media history, newspaper columnists have enjoyed far greater freedom than do journalists. The latter, in theory at least, are supposed to cover stories in an even-handed way, while columnists share their opinions. The Daily Mail’s Simon Heffer is one of Britain’s best-known columnists - and such writers are important to newspaper owners. The columnist or editorialist will reflect editorial policy. These scribes are under starters orders to brainwash their readers to accept the newspaper’s agenda. Heffer does have his fans, but he loses many when he amplifies the anti-Russian line taken by the CIA. According to Heffer, Russian President Vladimir Putin is cursed for everything, from failing to lift the toilet seat to forgetting to put the cap back on the toothpaste. A bit rich of Heffer after he himself had declared: “This is, in theory, still a free country, but our politically-correct, censorious times are such that many of us tremble to give vent to perfectlyacceptable views for fear of condemnation. “Freedom of speech is, thereby, imperilled, big questions go undebated, and great lies become accepted, unequivocally as great truths.” On this point, at least, he struck a chord with most of us. Holding a

All a matter of opinion, but certainly not yours different opinion is part of the human condition essential to human progress and understanding. If free debate is ever jackbooted by “Presstitutes” in collusion with politicians, the candles of liberty will be doused throughout Europe. There is no more intimidatory sanction than the self-righteous finger-wagging of the politically-correct lobby. Censorship, deliberate misinterpretation and news-spin makes us no better than the North Koreans. A man who could never have been criticised as a hypocrite was writer-journalist George Orwell. Famous for his novels Nineteen-Eighty Four and Animal Farm, the distinguished former columnist parodied government and media political correctness and their constant tinkering with the truth. “It is not exactly forbidden to say this or that or the other, but it is ‘not done’. Anyone who challenges the prevailing orthodoxy finds himself silenced with surprising effectiveness. A genuinely-unfashionable opinion is almost never given a fair hearing, either in the popular press or in highbrow periodicals.” The Mail on Sunday’s Peter Hitchens said much the same as did George Orwell: “Is there any point in public debate in a society where hardly anyone has been taught how to think, while millions have been taught what to think?” I raise people’s eyebrows when I suggest that they do not have an opinion. Taken aback, they are quick to defend themselves, until I point out that their opinion is not theirs but that of the media they read. I spend much time in public debate in social forums. When reading a poster’s comments on world events, I can detect an American a mile off, as easily as I would if he spoke to me in a Texan drawl. The rest of us are also very identifiable. I once

asked a Costa restaurateur and his wife if, when viewing approaching tourists, they could identify them by their nationality. The two laughed. They said they did so all the time. The Europeans were difficult. There was little or no change in clothing, style and mannerisms between, say, Germans and Dutch, Baltic States nationalities or Spanish and Italian. “The British?” I asked, tongue in cheek. Both burst out laughing, telling me the Brits were easy to identify - in the same way I can identify an American by his opinion on world events. The average American mirrors the views of the CIA. He protests that he has no knowledge of the CIA, and certainly never browses their website or has interest in studying their take on foreign affairs and news stories. Besides, he tells me, there are thousands of independent newspapers and magazines available throughout the United States. I then explain to him that the US and Europe media are far from being as independent as we are led to believe. “We can see changes, and that media is becoming increasingly concentrated with just

five, major, massive, giant corporations which own and control 90% of all TV, radio, newspapers, magazines and book publishing in the entire U.S.” So says a man who knows: Mark Mason, Ph D, cultural and political analyst based in California. Former CIA Director William Colby, who died suddenly after a freak canoe accident, was equally blunt, insisting: “The CIA owns everyone of any significance in the major media.” My advice is for serious-minded people to take a break from their usual sources of collecting information. To change channels, to pick up different newspapers. The best option is to discard conventional media. Go, instead, to online news reporting. It is not as controlled as is conventional media. If, for instance, you read the Daily Mail and

watch BBC or ITV News - is there a difference? - go instead to, or add, Russia Today, PressTV or RIA Novesti. You will be amazed at just how much the main UK news channels are leaving out. I have seen many cases where the truth is turned completely on its head by newspapers. There is remarkable difference between Eastern and Western media. As an editorialist, I have written for British and Eastern European newspapers, contributed to Russian media and broadcast and written in the United States. As you might expect, I am an avid contributor to the British media. Do not think for a moment that they report on the news the same way. Far from it! Have we then entered an Orwellian information Dark Ages? Is conventionally-published news of world events

now without value because it is first spun to shape readers’ opinions? No. On the contrary, I believe we are entering a period of enlightenment, thanks to the far freer flow of broader opinion via the internet. Had the internet been invented earlier, I think World War Two would have been avoided as, hopefully, war with modern Russia by the EU and US will be. People today are, rightfully, more cynical of their country’s warmongering propaganda and territorial ambitions. Many free-thinkers and truth-seekers - idealists - have migrated to the internet. They are no longer under the malign influence of mass media. As whistleblower Julian Assange says: “This generation is burning the mass media to the ground. We are reclaiming our rights to world history.”

Two-part documentary in which Melvyn Bragg examines the lives, work and legacy of two men whose ideas have had tremendous consequences both in their own time and down the centuries. In this programme, Melvyn goes in search of John Ball - a man about whom little is known but whose words and beliefs galvanised the ordinary people of this country into unprecedented revolutionary action. Not only that, but he has been a marker through the centuries for other radicals - men and women determined to challenge the status quo and question injustice. He was a lone voice for many years, preaching his doctrine in the south east of England, persecuted by the Church authorities he despised. But it wasn’t until 1381 that John Ball’s radical fire took hold, when he joined forces with Wat Tyler in Kent and led a rebellion - the misnamed Peasants’ Revolt.

Amazing Spaces: Shed of the Year Channel 4, 19:05

Recent research has revealed that Britain is a nation of shed fanatics, with 65% of adults owning a shed and the average shed owner spending over a year of their life in their prized shelter. As the competition to find Britain’s best shed continues, the designs are proving to be a mix of ingenious and eccentric, with a host of elective uses. George Clarke and his fellow judges look at the finalists in two more categories. The Summerhouse/ Cabin group throws up a replica 18th-century US frontier cabin containing a mummified yeti, a Gothic grotto decorated with 50,000 seashells, and a scaled down Elizabethan lodge. The Normal category defies its name as the team discover a festival-playing disco shed, a 1970s amusement arcade complete with a 12 foot high ferris wheel, a 1950s American diner, and a museum dedicated to TV comedy Dad’s Army and the Home Guard.

Brothers in Arms: The Pals Army of World War One ITV1, 22.15

This new documentary for ITV tells the story of the young British men who signed up for the army with their friends and fought together on the Western Front in the First World War. On the eve of the centenary of the start of the Great War, Brothers In Arms: The Pals Army of World War One brings alive the stories of life in the trenches through rare archive footage and interviews with veterans who fought at the Somme, facing the German artillery, mustard gas and trench foot in horrendous conditions. These are the men and boys who volunteered in response to Lord Kitchener’s request - “Your Country Needs You!” - and who just a few months later were setting sail for France to go to war against the German army. Drawn from cities, towns, villages, factories and farms, this civilian army was different from those before or since, and this programme features the vivid and detailed recollections of those who joined up. Made by Testimony Films, this is a story of camaraderie told by the young men who risked all and joined up to fight alongside their friends. Kitchener’s call came in response to the fact the British forces had only 80,000 fighting men compared to the Germans’ 3.5 million-strong troop of conscripts and reservists.

However, she’ll only have free goods that look new, and she knows exactly what she wants. In an extreme measure, Kirstie transforms a dining table using gaffer tape, for an unexpected wow effect. The team also head to Wales to help Stacey and Dave from Wrexham, who need a new kitchen - which is the hardest room in the house to furnish for free.

Undercover Boss Channel 4, 21:00

With government funding down and competition increasing, pharmacy chain Rowlands has seen its turnover drop by £20 million. In a bid to differentiate his business from rivals and win new customers, managing director Kenny Black wants his 510 dispensaries to offer free health advice and excellent customer service. However, when Kenny goes undercover, there’s a bitter pill to swallow: he discovers life-saving medicines out of stock and staff over-worked and under-appreciated.

Kids Behind Bars ITV1, 21.00

This new documentary for ITV meets some of America’s youngest and most dangerous criminals growing up inside. Produced by Wild Pictures, the company behind hard-hitting ITV documentaries including Brady and Hindley: Possession and Her Majesty’s Prison: Aylesbury, Kids Behind Bars steps beyond the barbed wire into a world where teenage prisoners have been punished like adults, with many facing long sentences which could see them spend most, if not all, of their adult lives inside. With extensive access to Indiana’s Wabash Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison, the programme provides a close insight into the lives of the incarcerated youths in its unit for teenagers, Block D, from those spending their first night to those preparing to move up to adult jail. America tries children in the adult justice system when they’ve repeatedly reoffended in the youth system, or their crime is considered so horrific that an adult maximum security prison is deemed the only answer. In the state of Indiana, children as young as 10 and charged with serious crimes can be tried and sentenced within the adult criminal justice system. The unit at Wabash is home to 40 teenagers serving jail terms for crimes including murder, armed robbery and battery. They include Jesus Macedo-Perez, 17 years old, serving 65 years for murder, Blake Layman,17, sentenced to 55 years for murder; and Marquise Lee, 18, serving 15 years for aggravated battery. Casework manager Aleta Burnett gives an insight into why teenagers end up in prison so young: “These kids are not coming from a healthy place, period, so they may feel like the whole system, the whole world has given up on them long before they even got there, and that wouldn’t surprise me. You know, what I like to say is our children aren’t throwaways, you know, we need to get them back out and [to] be healthy.” Their first nights in the unit can be particularly difficult, says custody officer Morrissey, who describes the experience for them: “Scary. Especially if they’ve never experienced this type of environment. They run the gamut between fitting right in to isolating themselves in their cell.”

Operation Wild BBC1, 21.00 Operation Wild sees animal lover Clare Balding and vet Steve Leonard join vet teams around the world as they undertake ground-breaking operations to try and save the lives of wild animals. They’ll discover how pioneering human medicine is transforming the way we can look after animals and join the vets pushing animal medicine to the limits in some of the most remote places on Earth. In the first of this three-part series, Clare Balding travels to the Wolong Giant Panda Base in South West China where vets are using high-tech animal medicine to try and save the species. Clare finds out about the human neo-natal techniques used to keep baby pandas alive and meets Zhu Xia; a panda rescued from the wild who needs an MRI scan to help diagnose what’s causing her unusual behaviour. In Cameroon, West Africa, we meet a gorilla called Shufai; he was just a baby when poachers shot him in the arm. Shufai almost died but his life was saved by Rachel Hogan, who runs a primate sanctuary – and now he needs her help again. Recently, his childhood injury has been causing his wrist to twist, meaning he can’t use it and he’s in a lot of pain. A complex operation is planned to stabilize his arm with metal plates - it could transform his life. But when they X-Ray Shufai shortly before the operation the vets realise something isn’t right and Rachel is left to make one of the hardest decisions of her life. In Okinawa, an island south of Japan, Clare joins a vet, Dr Keiichi Ueda who’s invented a way to give manta rays ultra-sound scans underwater and needs to carry one out on a manta ray under his care to discover if she is pregnant. Steve Leonard is in India for an ancient kite festival that has unintended consequences on the wildlife. He visits the largest pop-up animal A&E on the planet, responsible for treating over 1,000 birds. In Laos he joins young British vet, Will Thomas, who needs to operate on a four-tonne elephant with a gun-shot injury. But first he needs to take some X-Rays of his injured leg – and the only place he can do that is at the local human hospital. It takes more than just high-tech medicine to treat the biggest animals on the planet – these are stories of ingenuity, invention and dedication.

The Great British Bake Off BBC1, 20.00

This year we welcome the tent’s youngest ever baker and the oldest... All 12 bakers will be challenged on their baking skills from every angle by judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, all the while helped – or hindered – by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins. But their first hurdle is cake. Entering the tent for the very first time, their first Signature Challenge is to make a Swiss Roll. But with such a seemingly simple challenge comes a risk: who will have the tightest roll? Whose roll will split? Should the bakers go for the classic or push the boat out to impress? Recovering from their first challenge, they face their first ever Technical Challenge. It’s cake week… It’s a Mary recipe… It’s a classic cherry cake. But will the bakers be able to suspend the cherries and ice their cakes to the exacting standard of Ms Berry? As the next day dawns so does the Showstopper of the series. The bakers must make classic British cakes… in perfect miniature… all 36 of them… Thirty challenges, 12 brand-new bakers, two judges and two presenters, but there can only be one winner.

Grinding Men Good. Two-part documentary about crime and punishment in the nineteenth century, featuring the descendants of those who fell foul of the law. Johnny Vegas, Len Goodman and Mariella Frostrup go on an emotional journey to discover how their ancestors coped doing time in Victorian prisons. In part one, Len discovers how his great-grandfather threatened to kill his father with a pickaxe, assaulted his mother and was sentenced to five years penal servitude. The four times great-grandparents of Johnny, Philip and Ann Haines, both spent time in jail for stealing and drunkenness - and Johnny learns why prison warders are still called screws. Mariella’s ancestor, the entrepreneur William Martin Eckersley, was found guilty of fraud. It seems that the shame and embarrassment of his fall brought on a stroke at the age of only 30 after he was released early from HMP Lancaster. Mariella wants to find out what became of him.

Kids With Cameras: Diary of a Children’s Ward ITV1, 21.00 It is every parent’s greatest fear to have a child in hospital but what is it really like for the children? In a new, groundbreaking ITV series, over 100 youngsters at Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle were asked to record their experiences of hospital, from their point of view. In an unprecedented step cameras were given to the children and the resulting videos, providing their unique perspective, are woven into this brand-new series. Children aged six to 16 talk to the cameras about their illnesses, they interview their parents and record themselves undergoing treatment, eating, playing, taking medication, interacting with medical staff. Whether they are in hospital for an everyday injury, major surgery or life-threatening illness, the videos are surprisingly funny, as well as honest and moving. Over three programmes, the series provides an intimate look and fresh insight into what it’s really like to be a child in hospital. In the first programme, we meet a six-year-old with anaemia who needs regular blood transfusions, an eight-year-old boy who is suffering with severe eczema, a young girl who has been seriously ill with a brain infection, a girl with juvenile arthritis who is a regular outpatient and we also hear from lots of other children as well. Isaac, eight, has spent the last six weeks in hospital after suffering a flareup of eczema caused by a severe reaction to food. Isaac has to be bandaged 24 hours a day and take a cocktail of drugs to control the condition. Describing his treatment in his video diary, he says: “I’ve just got me bandages done, they are all sparkly. It feels nice because I don’t have to scratch no more and make myself angry. Like I scratch and then I can’t stop, can I mam?” Isaac hasn’t been able to eat since he arrived at hospital and is on a milk formula fed directly to his stomach. “The worst thing is not eating,” he tells the camera. “It’s the worst thing in my life. “I miss chips and chicken they are my favourite.” Doctors at the hospital are hoping to find a food type that is safe for him to eat. They discharge him with a plan that introduces specific foods back into his diet, including his favourite - chicken. But just a week later Isaac is back in hospital as the chicken has exacerbated his eczema. Isaac is upset but the doctors agree he can try having a bit of cabbage. Unlike most eight-year-old boys, on hearing this news, Isaac is delighted. Six-year-old Samuel has anaemia and has been a regular visitor to the hospital since he was three months old. He has to have monthly blood transfusions and has a permanent portacath in the side of his chest - a small appliance under the skin connected to a vein where medicine or blood can be given. Although only six, Samuel has begun to realise he is different to his friends and to his younger brother. He says: “My friends don’t have portacaths in and they’re not poorly likely me and they don’t have to go to hospital like me as well.” He records one of his regular trips to hospital for a much-needed blood transfusion. He is so tired before getting the blood he can hardly keep his eyes open during the consultation, but afterwards he is full of life again and races around the hospital corridors. He tells the camera: “I’ve nearly finished my blood transfusion, that one on the left is my second one (bag of blood). I feel loads, loads, loads, loads, loads, loads better.” Josslyn, seven, was rushed into hospital after an infection in her eye spread to her brain. She was put in an induced coma and a tube was inserted near her eye to drain the infection. She has been taking strong antibiotics ever since and after three weeks is getting ready to go home. She explains to the camera how she fell ill. She says: “I was in that ambulance because I was really, really, really poorly and in there they had special machines to keep me alive and breathing. “I got rushed up to Great North Newcastle Hospital for children and I was in an induced coma and intensive care and then I ended up in this.”

Student comes up with tasty sell-by food label A LONDON student may have solved the mystery of use-by and sell-by date labels on food. They have been heavily criticised for being inaccurate, which leads to mountains of food being thrown away daily, but maybe for not much longer! A more accurate method, Bump Mark, which

uses food labels filled with gelatine, has been invented for the James Dyson Award by Industrial Design and Technology student Solveiga Pakstaite, from London’s Brunel University. The Bump Mark label is smooth to the touch at first. But as the food inside the packaging decays, the label becomes

bumpy. So, the smoother the gelatine, the safer the food is to eat. It means that anyone, including the blind, can quickly identify when food is safe to eat, and when it should be thrown away. The label is filled with gelatine, set over a bumpy plastic sheet. Because jelly is solid when it sets, the bumps can-

not be felt at first. But as the gelatine decays, it becomes a liquid. In effect, the label simply copies what the food in the package is doing, so the expiry information is said to be far more accurate than a printed date. Designer Solveiga is having discussions with retailers and technology development companies to sell the label, and she has a patent pending for the design. “Using gelatine to model the decay process of food, Bump Mark is able to tell you exactly the condition your food is in, simply by running your finger over the label,” she said. “If it’s smooth, then you’re good to go, but if you start to feels bumps as the gelatine breaks down, be cautious.” Earlier this month, the UN food report stated that 40% of all the food produced in the US is never eaten, while in Europe, residents throw

away 100 million tonnes of food every year. Part of the issue was blamed on bad shopping habits and throwing away food, even when it’s safe to eat. Her design recently won the Inclusive Design Award, given by Made in Brunel and sponsored by Crown Packaging. Solveiga was a previous winner of the James Dyson Foundation scholarship. “I wanted to create a solution for enabling visually impaired consumers to gain expiry information about their food because, currently, the only indication is a printed date,” she added. “From the start, I knew that the solution must appeal to sighted people also, because the sad reality is that new solutions get implemented by companies only if the benefits are useful to the majority. “This is why I worked to create a cheap solution that could be applied to

existing food packages, and also provides information that even sighted people haven’t had access to before - information about the actual condition of food.” Her label design went through more than 20 iterations, each of which was tested for user-perception and technical performance. The gel starts out red, but changes colour over time as its ingredients react with each other. The rate of the colour change corresponds with the speed of growth of the food-poisoning bug E coli at different temperatures. When the sensor turns green, this means the bacteria have grown enough for the food to be dodgy. The national winners of the James Dyson Awards will be announced on 18th September. Other finalists have submitted a plant-powered radio and a rotating bed called Flipod.

WIFI… friend or foe?

By Jamie Drew ENTERTAINMENT is a powerful word, and has so many dynamics. Ask entertainers for the dictionary definition of entertainment and you will get different answers.

And they will all be right, probably, because each one will describe the specifics of what he or she does to entertain. The general meaning of entertainment is to hold a person or a group of people’s attention for a set period of time - in essence, to entertain! A bar owner will supply entertainment to draw in the crowds and, until recently, the artistes have usually come from the cabaret circuit. This week, on the social networks, performing artistes here have been debating the use of “Free Wi-Fi” when live entertainment is actually being presented on stage. Many have posted how irritating it is to stand on stage performing to people whose heads are down in their phones, surfing the internet and, in some cases, with headphones plugged in while listening to their own music collection.

Most entertainers find this demoralising - and rightly so. There is nothing worse for an artiste than the sound of silence at the end of a performance - especially when it has nothing to do with the quality of a singer’s voice. No, it is simply because audience attention is in the grip of hand-held devices. From an artiste’s point of view, it seems pointless even being there when the people gathered might as well be listening to a CD. And that, I hasten to add, is probably what some of them are doing on YouTube, via the free Wi-Fi. There are lots of opinions about how to tackle this situation,

which differs from venue to venue. A lot of the bigger bars do not seem aware of or are turning a blind eye to - the ignorance Wi-Fi seems to be breeding. Smaller bars put on the same acts as the bigger concerns. And they provide the same quality entertainment for which Tenerife is famed. But it seems that the “Free Wi-Fi” screentappers are much more noticeable in the smaller bars. This is becoming a major problem because simply turning off the Wi-Fi service will not stop this “epidemic” instantly. The audience will just find somewhere

else to get their fix of data. Almost all bars, cafeterias and clubs now offer a free Wi-Fi service, so this is something the entertainment world will have to get used to. Eddie Marzella (left), as far as I am aware, was the first compere to insist that the Wi-Fi service be turned off between 9pm and 12am at Springers. This hasn’t affected business and the bar is still as busy as ever. Springers is a karaoke bar and does not present performing artistes. However, if Eddie can show respect to his karaoke singers, why can’t other comperes follow this fine example set by one of Tenerife’s most experienced

entertainers? Eddie explains politely to the audience why the service is being turned off, and his sincerity is well received. Thus, his style of entertainment, minus the Wi-Fi, is more than enough to hold everyone’s attention while the karaoke is going on. I have watched the debate grow on Facebook, and every entertainer knows that Wi-Fi is here to stay. But it would be ideal if every venue turned off the Wi-Fi service solely for the duration of their shows. This would, surely, scare bar-owners into believing they might lose some of their audience. But if every bar plays ball, it won’t just draw focus to the stage. It will also give deserved respect to

an artiste who has probably put in years of hard work, and endless hours of practice, to present his show. And it will create an air of exclusivity to the evening - as it should! We all use social networks to promote our work and businesses, and most of us do it during our “down time”. But do remember that this Island, for one or two weeks a year, is also “down time” for the holiday-makers. They should be able to take advantage of free services where and when offered. But I do not believe that any audience members would be so enraged at the Wi-Fi being turned off for an hour that they would leave the bar and never return. Especially when all eyes will now be on the stage as the Island’s fabulous artistes get to do what they do best: holding their audiences’ attention and making sure they are entertained royally! This not an old issue, so we are all on relatively new ground. But Wi-Fi will become problematic to an artiste’s performance and will eventually chip away at his/her morale. Tenerife entertainers work in a concentrated environment and are some of the best holiday-resort artistes in the whole of the Canary Islands and the Spanish Costas. They deserve their chance to shine - and not have to compete in the same venue with another form of entertainment.

So what is the answer? Download your solutions

IS simply turning off the WI-FI really the answer? There will still be customers using their own data download.

Also, is this just papering over a crack? What about the ‘customers’ who talk throughout the performance. Should there be a sign saying “no talking when the act is on”? We would like your feedback on this topic. Is there a solution or is it a problem that doesn’t really exist? After all, the old saying is the customer is always right. Canarian Weekly will publish the best responses.

On the Oasis Fm Playlist.. Ingrid Michaelson IT’S hard to call a 34-year-old a newcomer - but this New Yorker is certainly new on the European scene.

Ingrid is half-Swedish and her father is a respected composer. Schooled in acappella groups she was always destined for a musical career. Her 2006 debut album Girls & Boys peaked at No.63 on The Billboard charts and received positive reviews from critics. It was a fine start and her follow-up, Be Ok, Everybody, did similarly well. Her 2010 third album Parachute and Human Again saw her take a more mainstream turn and featured an album track called Parachute. A couple of months later, Cheryl Cole covered it, took the song to No.5 in the UK, and Michaelson was suddenly the subject of overseas attention. The album hit the top five in America, lining her up for much bigger things. After a spell polishing her new collection, Ingrid has returned with the ultra-catchy Girls Chase Boys and already it’s storming up the US chart. Slated for a UK September release, this is bubble-gum pop at its finest.

MAGIC!

THERE aren’t too many Canadian reggae fusion bands, so say hello to Magic! - four lads from the Toronto area. Lead singer Nasri Atweh is a seasoned songwriter and. along with Adam Messenger, he wrote songs for the likes of Justin Bieber, David Guetta, Shakira, Cheryl Cole, Boyzone, JLS, Pitbull, Christina Aguilera, Chris Brown, and err, Peter Andre. He met Mark Pelli in the studio and the pair wrote Don’t Judge Me for Chris Brown. The chemistry between them was described by Atweh as “Perfect. Very artistic”. They decided to form a band and recruited Ben Spivak and Alex Tanas. Pelli was keen to explore some of the reggae tunes he had played on the guitar which, he admits, were very “police-esq”. This was the inspiration behind debut single Rude, which is now an international smash. It reached No.2 in Australia and New Zealand and is currently No.6 in their native Canada. And last week, it was the No.1 song in the United States. Unless they have a major slice of bad luck, Rude or the Marry That Girl song, as it’s known, will be the UK’s No.1 on Sunday.

Marlon Roudette THE multi-talented, London-born Roudette has all the ingredients required to be a major pop star.

The son of producer Cameron McVey and stepson of Eighties idol Neneh Cherry, he was always going to be a recording artist. Early band Mattafix was, in reality, a duo with Preetesh Hirji. Their mixture of hip hop/rap, R&B, reggae, dancehall, blues, jazz and soul saw them attain critical success, and they had a 2005 No.1 in Germany. This led to them supporting Sting and Joss Stone, before Marlon decided to go it alone in 2010. His debut single, New Age, was a monster in Europe. It also hit No.1 in Russia, Switzerland, Austria and Germany, while being top-10 in four other countries. But for some reason, his home country didn’t get it. In Germany, New Age sold over 600,000 copies and made Marlon a household name. Two years ago he told Roscoe on Oasis Fm: “It’s funny. I can walk down the street in London and I just blend in. But Germany! Well recently, I went out for a drink with my pal Ed Sheeran. This crowd saw us and started going mad. But it was all for me! They didn’t have a clue who Ed was! He has all these BRITS and they didn’t know who he was. Mad!” Marlon’s new single, When The Beat Drops Out, is his best work to date. And if there’s any justice, it should right the UK wrong.

Melissa Steel THERE is a tried and tested way to break a new act. Get them to do vocals on a DJ instrumental and then sit back and wait for superstardom. John Newman, Emile Sande and Sam Smith are a few examples - and Melissa Steel could be the next to benefit.

Kove’s smash, Way We Are, had Melissa’s smooth vocals, and straight away her record company gave us the super-catchy Kisses For Breakfast. It’s a little cheesy, but a summer hit is meant to be different. Dancehall star Popcaan helps out and it’s set for the UK’s top three this week after just a few weeks’ airplay. Melissa said: “The song has a summer island feel to it. This is why we went to Jamaica, because it’s the perfect place to shoot the video. I literally had the time of my life shooting it. I had a blast!” Hot producer Wunda has his fingerprints all over it and, like his recent work with Snoop Dogg and Drake, this will be a worldwide smash.

Short-cut treatment for breast-cancer sufferers

By Val Sainsbury TENS of thousands of women with breast cancer could soon be offered a single, 30-minute shot of radiotherapy, sparing them weeks of exhausting treatment.

The new treatment, intrabeam radiotherapy, is delivered during surgery while the patient is still under. What makes it so much better than all these “miracle” cures I read about is that the NHS has been given a provisional go-ahead to use it

1st August 2014 - 7th August 2014

by the “rationing” watchdog NICE. The organisation obviously believes in it by giving it the green light because it is obviously more convenient and improves quality of life. NICE estimates that as many as 36,000 women

with early breast cancer could benefit from the first few months of next year, when this new technique should be available. International trial results show that it is at least as good as standard radiotherapy, and widespread use could save the NHS some £15million a year. Although the machines are around £435,000 each, running costs are lower than standard radiotherapy, freeing up staff and equipment in hard-pressed departments. At present, conventional radiotherapy is offered to all women who have breast-conserving surgery, where only the lump is removed rather than the whole

breast. Conventional external-beam radiotherapy, which irradiates the whole breast, involves many hospital visits for patients, often spread over several weeks, to reduce side-effects such as tissue shrinkage. Professor Carole Longson, of NICE, said the new treatment has the potential to be much more efficient. “With the Intrabeam Radiotherapy System, only one dose is required,” she added. “This single dose is given at the same time as surgery, eliminating the need for numerous hospital visits. “Regular radiotherapy typically requires numerous doses over a threeweek period - although some people may receive

it for longer - and is performed weeks or months after surgery or chemotherapy.” The professor said NICE’s appraisal committee concluded: “While current evidence was not extensive, this type of radiotherapy was more convenient for patients and can improve a person’s quality of life.” Further consultation on draft guidance will lead to a final decision in November. And should approval be confirmed the NHS will be obliged to offer the service three months later. Draft guidance by NICE suggests around 6,000 women annually might opt for treatment out of 36,000 eligible patients. But the watchdog has imposed conditions, say-

ing the NHS must explain the pros and cons to women and men offered treatment - and must include their details on a national register. Doctors must also commit to collecting data. Professor Longson added: “So far, just six centres in the UK have used the Intrabeam Radiotherapy System to treat early breast cancer. “Because it is still relatively new, it is only right to recommend its use in a carefully-controlled way.” Professor Michael Baum, professor emeritus of surgery at University College London, is one of the trial leaders who carried out the first procedure using intraoperative radiotherapy in 1998.

Knees buckle under the weight they’re carrying BRITAIN’S knees are crumbling under the strain of the obesity crisis, with in excess of 9,000 people having knee replacement surgery last year. In fact, almost 9,500 people - including two teenagers - had new knees last year because their joints could not cope with their weight. And it cost more than £50m! The numbers have soared by 150% in just four years, raising new concerns about the extraordinary cost to the NHS of dealing with expanding waistlines.

Shocking new figures lay bare the impact on the NHS of the unexpected implications of children and adults cannot carry them. Obesity costs the NHS £5.1bn each year, and some 40,000 people die through being overweight or obese. Now it can be revealed that one in 10 patients given new knees is obese, and that’s up from one in 20 just four years ago. In 2009-10, there were 3,787 operations carried out in England and Wales, where obesity was listed as a main or sec-

ondary diagnosis. But by 2012-13, the number had leapt to 9,438. Over the last four years, there has been a total of 28,000 cases where obesity was regarded as a major trigger for knee replacements. It includes one boy aged between 10-14, who went under the knife in 2010-11. And in the last four years, knee replacements have been carried out on two boys and two girls, aged 1519. Tory MP Sarah Wollaston, Health Select Committee chairman, said: “Obesity isn’t a disability - it causes disability. Because of the rise in obesity we are going to see a rise in avoidable disability. “The thing we should be worrying about is that we are not tackling it at an early enough stage. We should be focusing our efforts on stopping people getting there in the first place.” She added: “This is just the opening salvo of something that is going to get worse over the coming decades.” A knee replacement costs around £5,500, meaning the bill for last

year alone could have topped £52million. The NHS says a replacement knee will last for around 15 to 20 years if it is “not put under too much strain”, raising the prospect of the same people undergoing repeated surgery throughout their lives. Official guidance suggests that most knee operations are offered for arthritis, with the over-65s most likely to need treatment. However, 25% of those classed as obese who had knee operations were under 60. There has also been a three-fold increase in knee replacements among the under-40s. In the last year alone, nine people in their twenties, and 70 thirtysomethings, have had knee operations after becoming obese. Women are almost twice as likely as men to need treatment. Of the 9,438 operations last year, almost 6,000 were for female patients. Tam Fry, from the National Obesity Forum, said: “These figures will continue to rise. The human body has evolved for perfection, and the

knees, the legs and arms - and all the bones - fit together beautifully. “But what we have done over the last 50 years to an incredible degree is upset the balance of evolution. We are now putting our bones under huge extra burdens, for which the human body was never designed. “What’s disastrous is people don’t know of the medical problems attached to obesity.” The NHS classes a knee replacement as “major surgery” and is offered only after other treatments, such as physiotherapy or steroid injections have failed to help. The Department of Health warns that obesity affects all age groups, and emphasises: “There is no magic bullet to solve the problem.” A DoH spokesman said: “It will take continued effort from all of us - Government, local communities, industry and individuals - to reverse this trend. “Our primary responsibility is to help the nation to be healthier. This is why we are working with industry, through

the Responsibility Deal, to reduce calories in food and drinks to ensure that healthier options are available. “We also have a voluntary front-of-pack labelling scheme, which will help people keep track of what they’re eating and give them the information to make healthier choices. “Everyone over the age of 40 can have a free NHS health check to spot the warning signs of long-term illness. And more people than ever before are taking them up. “And, for the first time, we have given local authorities the power, and over £5bn funding to tackle public health issues in their areas.” It was announced in July that free weightloss surgery could be offered to nearly one million diabetes patients. Health watchdog NICE called for more obese people with the condition to be considered for a gastric band or bypass. At a stroke, the ruling doubled to 1.8million the numbers qualifying for taxpayer-funded surgery.

Blinging up the kids, in a dazzling manner

By Ruth Benson THE latest fashion has actually been around for a long time, especially in America, and it seems to be getting bigger in the UK.

It is the rise of “blinging up your kids”. That’s right, the increase of children having crystals on their outfits, diaman-

te earrings and beauty regimes. Now we all know about beauty pageants, and people have varied opinions on whether they are a good thing for children. But it seems in the UK that the children are getting younger and younger for this type of styling. Parents, dare I say it – mothers in particular are so-called “blinging” their daughters. On Monday night, Channel 5 aired the programme Blinging

up Baby. It highlighted how children as young as three are having spray tans, and how they love the idea of being “pampered princesses”. It has been reported in Britain that the market is worth a whopping £5bn a year. The programme followed one mother, Sophie, who has two daughters, Princess Bliss Tiana May, who is four, and her oneyear-old, Precious Bell Ruby Rosina (need I say more?) and her

love of spending on her daughters, calling them her “little Essex Barbie Babes”. Sophie explains the treatments her older daughter, or “Prin”, has been receiving, starting at nine months when she had her nails done. And from the age of two, she was wearing hair-pieces - and now she has regular tanning sessions. The programme also featured Sammy, another mother of two, who spends 70% of her wages on her daughter’s

clothes to make sure she is unique - and has everything to match. Sammy describes having a daughter is “every woman’s dream”, so they can be dressed up like dolls. As a mother myself, I want my children to look well-dressed. But the main thing here is that they are children. Some of the outfits the children are put in don’t even allow them to walk, never mind play. In the programme, the children seem happy with being beauti-

fied. But the cynic in me thinks the kids are happy as it’s what they think makes the mother happy. As we know, children are individuals and, as they grow, they find their own style, be it the girlie girl or the Tom boy. Sammy worries that her daughter will no longer want to be dressed up, but says she will accept that - if it’s what makes her daughter happy. You can’t say any fairer than that!

Protect your skin from sun damage - or pay the price By Stella from Robot THE sun can do much more damage than simply give you painful sunburn. Dermatologists say that prolonged exposure to sunlight causes brown spots; red, scaly spots; drying and wrinkling and, worst of all, skin cancer. But it’s tricky avoiding the sun, especially on a sunshine Island like ours! Sometimes, your day at the beach may turn out to be much more sunburned than sand-filled. If your skin doesn’t produce the protective melanin pigment well, or if you’re exposed to the sun before enough pigment can be manufactured and dispersed, the ultra-violet rays kill skin cells. Even a mild sunburn that produces only a little redness destroys the top layer of your skin, just as if you had seared it with a hot iron. Despite these increasingly well-known dangers of sun exposure, many of us tend to get lazy when it comes to protecting our skin; or we just can’t resist the myth that getting some colour from the sun makes us look healthier. So learn some ways to minimise sun exposure easily to allow you to spend some time outdoors safely. One of the best things

you can do is cover up. The sun’s rays are most intense between 10am and 4pm. Stay indoors during this time, or, if you must be outdoors, cover up and wear sunscreen. The Skin Cancer Foundation says that hats and clothing made of dark, tightly-woven materials absorb ultra-violet light better than cotton fabrics in lighter shades. And dry fabrics offer more protection than wet ones. The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention recommends wearing sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15. Be sure to spread it on thick enough: Applying only a thin coating of a sunscreen can reduce the effectiveness of the product by as much as 50%. And obviously, waterproof sunscreen is best if you are swimming. Apply sunscreen 20-30 minutes before exposure to allow the skin to

absorb it. And reapply every two hours - more often if you’re sweating or getting wet. If you have fair skin, you might even want to begin preparing for sun exposure the night before by putting on a layer of sunscreen before bed. This will allow it to be thoroughly absorbed into the skin’s outer layer. Then apply the usual coat of sunscreen the next day, about 30 minutes before you go outside. The sun can also burn sensitive skin on the lips, just as easily as it fires the rest of your body. At worst, the damage can lead to skin cancer. So use a lip balm with an SPF of at least 15 and remember to reapply frequently. Too often, people forget to protect sensitive spots like the tops of the ears, the hairline, the ‘V’ of the chest, the nose and the hands. The Skin Cancer Foundation says 80% of skin cancers occur on the head, neck and hands. Thus, it recommends that you wear a hat made of tightly-woven fabric such as canvas, rather than one of straw. And you should also wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 on your hands and other exposed areas. Keep in mind that even umbrellas or tree shades provide moderate protection only from ultraviolet light, and they

don’t protect you from rays reflected off sand, snow, concrete and many other surfaces. Ultra-violet light isn’t reflected by water, but it can easily penetrate water - so being in the water doesn’t protect you, either. And do be careful to protect surfaces - such as under the chin - which are especially vulnerable to reflected light. Doctors can’t say it enough: “There is no such thing as a ‘healthy tan’.” But while sunbathing is a no-no for everyone, it’s an especially bad idea for fair-skinned people. Many of them can’t tan anyway and merely risk getting a serious burn. If you refuse to give up sunbathing, take it slowly and let your skin gradually build up mel-

anin to provide some protection. And don’t use tanning oils, which enhance the effects of ultra-violet rays and worsen a burn. You might as well be slathering yourself with cooking oil. Take care on cool, cloudy days. Damaging rays aren’t inhibited by clouds, and you can still get burned because ultra-violet light can penetrate cloud cover. Take precautions, even when the sun isn’t shining brightly. Some drugs, such as tetracycline and diuretics, can make your skin extra sensitive to sun exposure and increase the risk of sunburn. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about this possibility if you are taking any medication. In search of “safe” tanning, many people re-

sort to tanning booths or sunbeds. But though tanning companies will tell you their light machines produce UVA radiation only, the nonburning UVA rays are far from safe. In fact, UVA rays penetrate the skin even deeper than UVB rays do. And over time, exposure to UVA rays can make skin dry and wrinkled, and increase the risk of skin cancer. As you can see, protecting your skin from sunburn isn’t just to avoid discomfort. Too much sun exposure can contribute to dry, wrinkly skin, brown spots, and, worst of all, skin cancer. Unfortunately, there are no home remedies to cure the damage from sunburn, so always be careful when in the sun!

By Monica Dyson ONE of the biggest changes in a much-changed world has been the food we eat … much-changed from the Fifties, when I was growing up.

My parents used to eat some weird and wonderful things. It is said that almost no part of the pig was ever wasted. I don’t know if that applies now but then, it certainly seemed to be true in our house. There often seemed to be some sort of unidentifiable pork delicacy simmering on the range or the cooker. Offal was obviously a very important part of people’s diet in the years after the war because, for one thing, it wasn’t on ration and was cheap and nutritious. I remember, although my sister and I refused to eat them, dishes like cooked scrotum, brain, chitterlings, a pig’s trotters, head, bag, face, cheek and tongue. Strangely enough, although black pudding, which is made from congealed pig’s blood, filled me with horror then, I have actually started to enjoy it after trying it from the breakfast menu in hotels. For some reason, it has become fashionable again. My mother would make brawn, which was meat and tissue found on animals, cooked and then set in gelatine. Although the very description of these foods at the time was enough to make me feel violently ill, I may well have been eating something similar for years. It seems as though the jelly in Melton Mowbury pork pies is made from pig’s trotters! Offal, being the internal organs and entrails of a butchered animal, is still considered a gourmet food in some countries, with foie gras, pate and sweetbreads being particu-

1st August 2014 - 7th August 2014

The offal truth about our pork ‘delicacies’

larly popular in France and Italy. Haggis, considered the national food of Scotland, is a savoury pudding made from sheep’s heart, liver and lungs, mixed with onion, oatmeal, suet and spices, Jewish cuisine includes chopped liver and in the US, chitlins were a cheap dish for the poor in the Southern states where, traditionally, people also received entrails, removed in one piece from the hogs at killing time. But one of the most popular forms of offal in England has always been tripe. Dressed tripe, edible offal from the stomachs of farm animals, removed after slaying, was a nutritious, cheap dish for the working classes, from Victorian times through to the latter half of the 20th century, when it started to lose its popularity. Tripe, especially popular in every Lancashire town, has a history of over 2,000 years, being enjoyed by the Greeks and Romans. And it is recorded that it was a favourite dish of William the Conqueror. The old profession of tripe-dresser, which involved washing and bleaching the meat, has very much disappeared, although there is still a “Tripe Marketing Board”, which in the Seventies began a campaign to persuade people to buy tripe. It did result in a large increase in sales in some areas of the country. But by and large, it is just used now in pet foods. I am not sure if there are any specialist tripe shops left, or even if many butchers sell it today, although I believe that at least one butcher in the new market here in Sheffield does. I’m sure readers will tell me! In 1976, together with the “yard of ale” contest, there was a “yard of tripe” contest at Beverley Racecourse. But I’m not sure how

successful that was in encouraging race-goers to start buying it. I certainly don’t think it would fit in with the image of big hats! My father loved tripe. My mother cooked it in milk with onions, often weekly for him, and all year round, although it

seems that it was very popular during the summer. That’s when people ate cold tripe, seasoned with salt, pepper and vinegar, sometimes with salad - and my father wasn’t deterred by criticism from some people that it was

like “eating your own tongue”. In fact, if we were ever with him in the old Castle market, we had to visit the tripe stall, where pieces of tripe were placed on the counter on small white plates. So popular was the

stall that there was always a queue, and I’m sure there was more than one tripe stall in the market. I tried tripe just the once, and I can only describe the feel of it in my mouth as like gristle. I wonder if some of these foods will one day start to become delicacies and expensive to buy? Oysters, which in 19th century Britain were cheap and eaten mainly by the working classes, are now expensive. Traditionally considered to be an aphrodisiac - because they are said to resemble the female sex organs - they also contain a high proportion of zinc, which aids production of testosterone. To me, they are slimy and unpleasant. In fact, pretty much like tripe, if the truth were known! But my father wouldn’t have agreed with me!

You’ll find other advantages of flying with Thomson Airways, too. The company flies to 19 UK airports in summer and winter, so the chances are that you can fly from your door-

step. And if you’re flying to Northern Ireland, you’ll find routes from Belfast. There are regular flights to Dublin as well. Thomson won’t let you down when it comes to cost, either. Sarah and Sally are looking after flight seat sales here in Tenerife, and they review prices from resort to the UK locally every week. Plus, booking with your local Thomson Airways office means you get FREE 20kgs hold, 5kgs hand luggage and all card fees are included as a standard. For a small fee, you can also add up to an extra 10kgs to your allowance. And if you are celebrat-

ing something special, you can book extra touches like chocolates and champagne on your flight! It goes without saying that Thomson’s staff are always here for you on the ground, too, with their friendly service.

If you need any help at the airport, you’ll find Thomson and First Choice Holiday Advisors on hand. Plus, all Thomson offices around the world have staff who speak English and the local language.

They work local office hours and use local telephone numbers, so getting in touch with the company is easy. Looking to book your next flights? You can book one-way and return tickets to any Thomson destination with Sarah and Sally at the Tenerife Resort Office, either in advance or at the last minute. For any flight enquiries, drop them a line at tenerifeflights@thomson.co.uk, give them a call on 922 761 202, or get in touch via their Facebook page. Thomson Airways Tenerife is where you’ll also find its latest offers, and you can pop in and see the girls in their office at CC El Duque, opposite the Saturday and Thursday market in Fanabe. Thomson Airways looks forward to welcoming you on your next flight! *Source: Thomson Airways Customer Survey Questionnaire scores for May-September 2013.

Put those lights out! On 4th August 1914, Britain entered the “War to end all wars” and Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey said: “Lamps are going out all over Europe - we shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.”

On Monday, Britain is planning to mark the centenary with a candlelight vigil in Westminster Abbey, where the last candle will be

extinguished at 11pm -exactly 100 years after the Great War began. After the Commonwealth Games, there will be a service in Glasgow Cathedral to mark the sacrifice of many soldiers from across the former British Empire. British and German politicians will gather at the St Symphorien Military Cemetery in Mons, Belgium, where soldiers of both nationalities are buried, for a Service of Reconciliation. Pupils from every secondary school in the UK will be invited to visit

the battlefields of Europe to learn their history on the spot. And the Royal British Legion is inviting people all over the UK to join the act of remembrance on Monday by extinguishing their lights between 10pm and 11pm, leaving just one burning in memory of the fallen. Here in Tenerife, you might wish to do the same. Wars did not end 100 years ago! Lest we forget. To contact the Royal British Legion, Tenerife, telephone Don Young on 922 739 486

Congratulations to Paul Davies and all the crew at Premier Properties Tenerife, who are celebrating after winning the Canarian Weekly World Cup competition! Premier Properties Tenerife won 10,000 euros worth of advertising after Germany’s thrilling win over Argentina in the World Cup Final.

Bad beastie busters! By Margaret Tully

THERE is nothing worse than taking weeks to grow something from seed, only to have a little insect eat its way voraciously through your beloved plant.

It would be so easy to reach for a spray-gun full of chemical insecticide to blast them away. But I have rounded up my top 10 Beneficial Insects to rid your garden, patio or terrace from those pesky insects you don’t want. Ladybirds There are many species, with different colours and spots. Both the larvae and the adults are predators and will happily munch their way through aphids, mealy bugs, thrips, mites and scale insects. Ladybirds have really suffered because of the over-use of insecticides, and we really need to encourage their resurgence. Dragonflies and Dam-

selflies These beautiful insects, after laying their eggs in ponds, or any source of natural water, will emerge into those colourful, flying insects we just love. They will eat mosquito larvae and other insects, such as aphids.

Green Lacewings They lay batches of greenish eggs on the stalks of plants. They hatch and the larvae eat mainly aphids. The larvae will also eat mites and leaf-hoppers. Powdery Lacewings They are smaller then the green lacewing and

are covered in fine, white powder - they look a bit like whitefly - and they will eat red spider mites and the eggs. Brown Lacewings These insects like to feed on aphids, thrips and mites. Ground Beetles

These are natural predators, with agile, well-armoured larvae. Both adults and larvae destroy large numbers of small insects, especially at night. They have a real taste for cabbage root fly eggs and root aphids. Although slugs are not a problem in the drier parts of the Canaries, they certainly can be inland and in more temperate parts, But the violet ground beetle is a natural predator of slugs. Chalcid Wasps This a large group of mostly parasitical wasps who attack white butterflies, flies and scale insects, by laying eggs in their larvae. Mites These are generally a terrible pest in the garden, but Anystis agilis attacks other mites and insects aggressively. Parasitic Wasps For soft-scale insects, use Metaphycus helvolus, and for white flies use Encarsia formosa. These wasps are especially good in enclosed areas and can be purchased via the internet. Hoverflies These flies are very important as predators of aphids. They lay their eggs next to

aphid colonies - and a single maggot can eat over 800 aphids in a lifetime, although they don’t have a long life. They also help rid your plants of red spider mite and lackey moth caterpillars. Other ways to keep a balance in your garden is to encourage frogs, toads and hedgehogs. Water is so important for many of the beneficial insects and creatures so, if you do have space, please consider having a small pond. By the way, do not feed hedgehogs with bread soaked in milk because it only makes them ill. Making sure you rotate your crops is an excellent way to avoid the build-up of pests and diseases, and this is also true for plants in pots. Make sure you remove as much of the old soil from the roots before transplanting with new soil. A balance in the nutrients for the plant will discourage disease or pests from attacking it. A healthy plant will be able to stave off an attack more then a plant which is struggling. Next week: Companion-planting and natural feeds

Lagonda is roaring back but to Middle East only!

By Jav ASTON Martin are bringing back their iconic Lagonda name next year, as a limitededition luxury saloon.

Sadly, though, it won’t be seen in the UK, or anywhere else in Europe, because the company are offering the models to a select group of Middle Eastern customers on an invitation-only basis. Technical details are still unclear, but a 565bhp+ version of Aston’s thunderous 5.9-litre V12 is expected to take pride of place - and there’s certainly room under that expansive bonnet. Drive will be sent to the rear wheels via a sixspeed automatic transmission, and it goes without saying that the performance will live up to all expectations of Aston Martin products. So those lucky Middle East buyers can expect a top speed of around 200mph, with 0-62mph being completed in about five seconds. The new Lagonda will be based on the VH platform under-pinning all current Aston Mar-

tin models, but it will be sold in a completely different manner. Pricing has not been revealed, although the company says Lagonda’s unique sales strategy - and the price - will be “commensurate with the car’s exclusivity, quality and luxurious nature”. But this is nothing new as far as the prestigious car-makers are concerned. Marek Reichman, Aston’s Design Director, says of the new model: “It has been created as a piece of exceptional automotive art in the same vein as the One-77 hypercar and

the beautiful V12 Zagato.” Like its 1976 predecessor, which pioneered the use of LED instrumentation in its interior, the new Lagonda will employ cutting-edge car design technology, including a carbon-fibre bodywork. Each car will be handbuilt at the firm’s Gaydon headquarters in Warwickshire, using the same facilities which previously produced the One-77. It will also be under the auspices of the “Q by Aston Martin” Special-Projects division responsible for the £500,000 CC100 road-

ster. The Lagonda was founded way back in 1906 and bought by Aston Martin in 1947 when the renowned David Brown was at the helm. It has operated in fits and starts ever since, the DB4-based Lagonda Rapide saloon arriving in 1964, with a series of Aston Martin V8based four-doors built between 1974 and 1976. The best-known Aston Martin Lagonda was William Towns’ 1976 squared-off saloon, although the company did build an extremelylimited run of Virage-

based Lagonda cars in the early Nineties. The Q Division, launched last year, is responsible for enabling customers to customise existing models to their own specifications, or to commission entirelybespoke cars. An Aston Martin spokesperson previously said the Lagonda was part of a series of coachbuilt models produced by the Q Division. The company also recently secured some £100 million in fresh funding, which may go towards the mooted Aston Martin Lagonda SUV.

This all-new model has recently been brought back into the limelight following Aston’s ongoing discussions and parts-sharing deal with Mercedes-Benz. Earlier this year Aston Martin trademarked an updated version of the Lagonda emblem, hinting at the imminent return of the nameplate. The company say the launch of the new saloon revives the Lagonda ethos of “the finest of fast cars”. But whether it will be badged as an Aston Martin Lagonda or simply as a Lagonda remains to be seen.

Foreign embassy drivers owing the UK millions IT has always been regarded as somewhat of a joke, but now it has gone too far, and the UK Government officials really should put the brakes on.

They are owed an incredible £82 millionplus in unpaid motoring fines by foreign embassies. That’s because foreign diplomats (or their chauffeurs) tend to

ignore speeding fines, park on double yellow lines or in no-parking areas, and ignore London’s Congestion Charges. These shocking figures have been revealed by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Transport for London (TfL). Diplomats have racked up an £82,001,682 debt on the London Congestion Charge alone since its introduction in February 2003. The American Embassy tops the list of offend-

ers with an £8.7m debt, which is £2.5m more than any other embassy. The TfL said diplomats were not exempt and, though two-thirds of embassies do pay, a “stubborn minority” refuse. Paul Cowperthwaite, TfL general manager for congestion charging, said: “We and the UK Government are clear that the congestion charge is a charge for a service and not a tax. “We will continue to pursue all unpaid fees and related penalty-

charge notices, and we are pushing for the matter to be taken up at the International Court of Justice.” The parking-fine bill for embassies in the UK last year stood at nearly £3,5m, with more than 5,000 unpaid fines. Nigeria was the worst offender, featuring in the top five for both parking fines and congestion charge debts. Mark Simmonds, Parliamentary UnderSecretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, said his

department had held face-to-face meetings with diplomats about the fines. He added: “In addition, we wrote to the diplomatic missions and international organisations in April, giving them the opportunity to either pay their outstanding parking fines or appeal against them if they considered they had been issued incorrectly.” As a result, the unpaid parking fines total was reduced by almost £200,000 - some councils waiving the fines and

some embassies paying up. As for Britain’s overseas diplomats, a Foreign Office spokesman said: “Under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, diplomatic missions have an obligation to respect the laws and regulations of the receiving State. “This includes paying parking fines. The UK demands a high standard of behaviour of its own diplomats, and it is our own policy to pay fines when they are incurred.”

Target Army outflanked!

TARGET Army have been at the Premier League summit for a number of weeks, and have been playing very nicely, thank you.

So a home fixture against Bar 180 A would seem to hold no fear for them. Wrong! With their own military precision, the reigning

champions dismantled the Army with a 7-1 rout. Ray hit his first 180 for the hosts, while Tom fired in his seventh for Bar 180. The result rocketed them to the No.1 spot, with games in hand. A 6-2 Phoenix bar win over Gaffers B included a 113 finish by Mitch, and The Pub put seven past Bar 180 B. Last week’s Bar 180 D heroics are now dis-

tant memories following their 6-2 slump at home to the Vikings. But captain Jamie eased the pain a little with his second maximum. Elsewhere, our good friends at Inkspots suffered another whitewash, this time at home against Target Titans. Division One now has clear favourites. Step forward Emerald Shamrocks. Although

they face a stiff test at Chipeque this week, their 8-0 whitewash over new boys Clouseaus put them firmly in the driving seat. For their part, Chipeque dispatched Pas O Nadas 6-2 and Gaffers A recorded the same winning margin at home to Emerald Lounge. Elvis Dave, of Division 2 outfit Waterfall Warriors, celebrated his 27th wedding anniversary

this week by hitting his third maximum of the season. But his team had to win the trebles leg to beat the plucky Rebels. It gave Chipeque Chippers a chance to extend their lead slightly, and they duly obliged by beating Amistad 2, 6-2. The Palms Pool Bar are going along nicely, although they, too, had to take the last rubber to claim vic-

tory over Palms Sports bar. There was more last-leg drama at Marilyns as they squeaked past the Spear Chuckers, while Paul ‘Topgun’ Messent checked out on 96 in the trebles as Phoenix Flights managed just three points at Barracuda Hunters. Finally, The Bar enjoyed a fun evening - and a 6-2 success against Ourplace Playgirls.

Fantasy Football League returns THE Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League is back for another season!

Registration is now underway and it’s free to enter, so show us how good a manager you are. Can you topple last year’s winner Steve Schofield (pictured) and scoop the honours? All the Oasis Fm DJs are taking part - and entering couldn’t be easier. Go to fantasy.premierleague.com and follow the simple instructions. It will take you just a few minutes, and then you can start spending the £100m each manager is given. Once you’ve registered, you have until 11.30am on the opening day of the season to change your

squad, so don’t worry about any last-minute transfers. This season, Fantasy managers have plenty to consider after last season’s top scorer, Luis Suarez, joined Barcelona. Suarez racked up an amazing 295 points in just 33 appearances. Liverpool scored 101 times on their way to second place behind champions Manchester City, and they have snapped up

Benfica wide man Lazar Markovic. Managers will be watching his points progress, while Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana will be popular at £7.5m and £8.5m each. Manchester United

have snatched Luke Shaw (£6m), and the arrival of playmaker Ander Herrera (£7.5m) will add to the creative talents of Juan Mata (£9m). Arsenal and Chelsea have been busy. Alexis Sanchez is available at a

bargain £10.5m, while a fully-fit Theo Walcott is just £9m. Down at the Bridge, Cesc Fabregas will cost £9m, and new striker Diego Costa will be on many a list. West Ham striker Mau-

ro Zarate looks cheap at £6.5m, as does Southampton’s new talisman Dusan Tadic at £7.5m. For local interest Ayoze Perez, who has joined Newcastle from CD Tenerife, is yours for just £5m!

All White on the night THE new season of the Direct Telecom pool league is just around the corner, and registrations are now being taken.

If you have a team and would like to enter, the

deadline for entries for the new season is 1pm next Friday (8th August). To enter, call 686 903 552. If you would like to play in the league and join a team, the contact number is the same. We are delighted to announce that Direct Telecom will again be

the main league sponsor, and we’d like to thank Shai and Mike for their continued support. The same applies to Fritzel and Nick, at Tenerife Pool Tables, who will again be backing the league. Their assistance has helped make the

league the success it is, and their name will still be associated with the Cup, Plate and singles events. Also this week, the legend that is Jimmy White played an exhibition night at Ye Olde Ocean in Fanabe. Plenty of league members took on The Whirlwind and a few

were successful. They included young Harley and Neil from Gaffers, but how Kevin lost remains a mystery! A big well done to everyone connected for the warm welcome and enjoyable night. A few calendar events have been released: Tuesday, 19th August AGM for 2014-2015 season (starts 7.30pm sharp), and Charity

Shield match: Tenerife Hammers A v Gaffers A (at Palms Bar) Saturday, 23rd August Tenerife Pool Tables Summer Singles tournament (at Palms Bar), 2pm start. 500euro prize fund and free entry. Open to all registered Direct Telecom players Tuesday, 26th August Start of the new season!

Nothing artificial about CDT By Roscoe THE pre-season fixtures are coming thick and fast now for Tenerife, even if the signings aren’t!

A comfortable win against Tenisca in La Palmas was followed up on Wednesday with a routine 2-1 win at Las Zocas. Manager Alvaro Cervera was happy enough, saying: “This has been a training match for us because it is very difficult for us to play on

this type of artificial turf from one day to another. “We are still having heavy workouts, and that’s the most important thing. But we have done things well and, overall it’s all good right now.” This week (Wednesday) CDT face old rivals Las Palmas in a low-key friendly before the return in Gran Canaria. But already, a few things are falling into place. Vitolo is showing up well in midfield and displaying the extra quality the side needed, and then there is Jairo. Promoted from the B team, he looks as though he could be this season’s find. He has impressed in training and caught the eye in

the first two matches. And he might just give the board a bit of wiggle room. If they can save a wage on a senior player, it will give them some much-

needed ammo in what is already a fierce transfer market. The fixtures are out and again, Tenerife will start the season in the air. They will travel to

Ponferradina on the weekend of 23rd August before the first home match with newly-promoted Albacete. Then it’s a trip to Girona on Sunday before

a mirror match a few days later in the Copa Del Rey. It has now been seven years since Tenerife had a home cup match. Hot balls, cold balls anyone? The first Derby of the season is in the last weekend of September in Santa Cruz, before a return to Las Palmas in March. Finally this week, Ayoze Perez seems to be taking to the north-east of England like an Essex boy in Marbella. He scored his first goal for Newcastle on Wednesday against Sheffield Wednesday, and it was some effort as well. By all accounts, he has done better than the coaching staff expected. Go Ayoze!
