Walk for Life set for record-breaking celebration
THIS year marks the 10th anniversary of the Tenerife Walk for Life and, as founder Brigitte Gypen says: “It is about reducing fear, about helping people live with cancer”
The popular annual event celebrates its 10th year on 14th December with what will be its biggest walk yet. And this year, there are even more events planned. The Walk for Life is a rallying call for cancersufferers and survivors, and is a unifying event in many ways. It brings together Spanish cancer charities and support organisations, people living with cancer, their friends and families, those who have sadly lost someone to cancer, and, on a wider scale, the general public of Adeje and Arona. It is a real multi-cultural mix as the walk always crosses from one borough to another, alternatively starting in Adeje and ending in Arona, or vice-versa. The 2014 walk will start in the centre of Las Americas at the City Centre commercial centre, opposite Parque Santiago 2, and finish at Fañabe beach. Brigitte Gypen, Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and Arona Deputy Mayor Antonio Sosa hosted a press conference yesterday (Thursday) to announce details of the event. And to celebrate a decade of Walk for Life, there will be 10 different events.
At the presser, Adeje’s Mayor congratulated Brigitte and her organisers on the multi-cultural nature of the event, as well as all the good work achieved in early detection and help for those families who are suffering, as a result of a breast cancer diagnosis. “This is about overcoming obstacles, about making the invisible visible, about creating awareness among friends, family and society in general,” he said The Mayor also praised the solidarity network among those who have suffered cancer which has helped improve the quality of life of those still struggling. “It is also about reducing fear, about helping
people live with cancer,” added Mayor Fraga. “The funds raised during the annual event were also very important for the cancer associations.” The mayor alluded to austerity measures by the national government in many areas, including health, which, he underlined, “could put lives in danger”. Antonio Sosa, Deputy Mayor of Arona, congratulated Brigitte on her ongoing work, as well as all the volunteers who work throughout the year. “This has become a ‘Clásico’,” he said, and helped let people know that “they are not alone, that there are many, many people with them in their struggle. “We all need help now
and then,” he added. “Walking for life really is worthwhile.” To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the walk, which sees thousands and thousands of people walking the street with everyone dressed in pink, the organisers - with the support of the councils and businesses - have organised 10 events. This programme gets underway in October, and one of its aims is to raise awareness, funds and support for breast cancer. “We have played a little with the Walk for Life title,” said Brigitte. The events will bring together a whole host of people in the world of dance, sport, music, the media, gastronomy, and
much more. Most of the events will take place in Adeje or Arona, and, said Brigitte: “We hope to exceed the 18,000 euros raised last year. “One of the group’s aspirations is to be able to create a zone, a space, a permanent home for people who want to talk about cancer, maybe to watch a film, listen to music … a ‘feel good’ room, perhaps, a space where people can look forward to their tomorrows.. Among the events planned is a conference for life, with the participation of Dr Isabel Rubio Rodríguez, who will fly in from Barcelona for the event, and is a leading practitioner in breast cancer care and treatment. She will host two
conferences, one in English and one in Spanish, to reach the widest audience possible, and answer questions from the floor. In parallel there will be medical experts on hand in screened areas to advise and demonstrate self-examination for women. And Brigitte told the conference that it was very important for women of all ages to be aware of the need for body awareness and examination as, in recent years, more and more younger women were presenting, and early detection was and is vital. The events are: 20th Sept: Swim for life, Tenerife Top Training, Adeje 26th Sept: Conference for life, CDTCA, Adeje 4th Oct: Yoga for life, Playa Las Vistas, Arona 12th Oct: Golf for life, Los Palos Golf, Arona 16th Oct: Dance for life, Plaza Pescador, Los Cristianos, Arona 14th Nov: Soul for life, El Médano, Granadilla 21st Nov: Radio Marathon for life, Adeje 28th Nov: Chestnuts and wine for life, Valle San Lorenzo, Arona 7th Dec: Cycling for life, La Caleta, Adeje 14th Dec: Walk for Life, Arona and Adeje *A NEW webpage has also been designed www. walkforlife.es which has information on the association, galleries from past years and, importantly, registration forms for all of this year’s events. Early registration is important for the organisers, so if you are planning to take part in one or some of the events, do register in advance where possible.

Rajoy’s relationship with Germany is strengthened MARIANO RAJOY and Angela Merkel enjoyed a two-day get-together this week as both countries reaffirmed their “special relations”.
The Spanish Prime Minister and the German Federal Chancellor tackled the need to continue making progress on greater economic, monetary, banking, fiscal and political integration of the European Union. They also agreed on the need to re-establish that employment must become the main priority of all European institutions. The pair emphasised the “wonderful and close relations between the two countries and their agreement on the majority of the issues” at their joint press conference. At the start of his speech, Rajoy underlined that Spain is starting to see the results of the reforms undertaken through the hard work of the Spanish people. “We have managed
to correct the significant imbalances that had been building up over the course of many years and, following a long recession, Spain is again enjoying growth, albeit slight,” he said. “But it now amounts to four consecutive quarters and, in the last quarter, we even headed up growth in the Eurozone,” This was confirmed by the Chancellor, who expressed her “satisfaction” at the achievement. Rajoy added: “Between us all, we have managed to again place
Spain on the path of sustainable, sustained growth and job creation. “But we will not give in to self-complacency. We are aware that we must continue down this reformist path.” He then said the forthcoming European Council meeting, called to decide the President of the European Council, and to propose the next High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, were among the issues tackled by the two leaders. According to Rajoy
and Merkel, these appointments are important to ensure that the European institutions “can get to work as soon as possible on implementing the priority strategies for the coming years”. Following Spain’s initiative, the European Council and the other institutions are implementing measures aimed at avoiding “this human drama” and attacking immigration policy “from a global perspective”. Rajoy stressed: “Immigration must be an option rather than an ob-
ligation, due to a lack of resources to lead a The situation in Ukraine, Iraq, Gaza and Libya, together with the NATO summit on Thursday and Friday, were also discussed. The priority in Ukraine, according to Rajoy, is to achieve a ceasefire that avoids increasing the number of victims, guarantees the security of the population and offers an opportunity for negotiations. And regarding Iraq, he said the international community must tackle this serious crisis decisively from a regional perspective with the support of neighbouring countries, while preserving territorial unity and integrity. Rajoy is confident the new Iraqi prime minister will form a government of unity, laying the foundations to redirect the situation. The Spanish Prime Minister, responding to questions about whether it will be necessary to move away from austerity policies as advocated by certain European countries said he holds the same position as when he came to power.
He told the press it was necessary to continue with fiscal consolidation policies, continue to make structural reforms at a national level to increase competitiveness and, hence, well-being and wealth, make progress in terms of economic union and work towards European integration. He also qualified as important the two decisions adopted by the European Central Bank, consisting of the deposits of financial institutions having a negative interest rate, and in making loans available to these institutions at an interest rate of 0.25% for three years. And of the call for a referendum in Catalonia, Rajoy reiterated: “An illegal referendum will not be held in our country. The law does not permit this and, moreover, it is absurd and hugely negative for Catalonia and for the rest of Spain.” He queried: “Where do these people wish to go outside of the European Central Bank, the European Union and the single currency?”
Tourism hits a peak SPAIN has posted its highest-ever January-July figures, with 36.3 million inbound tourists - a 7% increase on the same stretch last year.
This period welcomed 8,447,277 inbound tourists from the UK, up 5.5% and the top market again. This was followed by Germany, with 5,821,890 inbound tourists (up 6.6%) and France with 5,651,901 inbound tourists (10.8%). Catalonia was the top destination region with 9.3 million inbound tourists. A total of 8,296,351 inbound tourists visited Spain in July, an increase of 5.9% and an-
other all-time high for July. The UK was the top market, but France made the largest contribution to overall growth, with an additional 155,000 inbound tourists. One-third of all British tourists travelled to the Balearic Islands, while the Canaries were their second-mostpopular destination. With 1,412,096 inbound tourists, France is a growing focus for the tourism sector. And the French tourists are not travelling far - 39.2% went to Catalonia, and there was a sharp increase in the number of French going to Andalusia. The German market was the third-largest in July, with 1,163,190 inbound tourists. That was 14% of the total,
but a worrying decrease of 1.1% compared with 2013. Over 50% of German tourists travelled to the Balearic Islands, while the Canary Islands were their No.2 most-popular target. Some 676,428 inbound tourists travelled from the Nordic markets last month - a significant 12.1% growth. And 449,286 inbound tourists travelled from the Netherlands, which was a 2.3%, increase. Italy posted strong growth of 10.4% in July, while the highest monthly increases were from Belgium (up 14.2% to 362,018 inbound tourists) -and Switzerland (up 15.7% to 248,349 inbound tourists. With 914,592 inbound tourists in July, the Canary Islands posted
the highest monthly growth, with 8.4%. British tourists grew by 9.2%, with 6,538,654 Brits visiting the Canaries in the sevenmonth period to July. The figure represented a fabulous 11.8% increase on last year. Air travel was the choice for 75.2% of all inbound tourists (6,241,434 in July), an increase of 3%. Hotel accommodation accounted for 57.3% of the total, adding up to 4,750,441 tourists in July and growth of 0.3%. But 42.7% inbound tourists chose nonhotel accommodation (3,545,910), while 19.4% stayed in private property, or property owned by relatives, 13.6% in rented property and 9.8% at alternative accommodation.

Tomatina sparks big political row IT has been dubbed “the world’s biggest food fight”, but this year’s Tomatina - a huge sqashed-tomato bash - has been stained by controversy.
Thousands of halfnaked revellers pelted each other with tomatoes on Wednesday. But behind the scenes, the world-renowned fiesta has been tainted by a row over its privatisation. The Tomatina, hugely
popular with visitors from Britain, Australia, the US and Japan, brings the small eastern town of Bunol to global attention annually for an orgy of fun. Mindful of safety and finances, the local authorities last year began charging revellers an entry fee and hiring Spaintastic, a private company, to sell tickets. The town hall vowed to improve safety at the wild festival, in which participants drink sangria and splash around in the tomatoes’ red juice and pulp. Before the privatisation, around 40,000 rev-
ellers would cram into the town, quadrupling its population. Places are now limited to 22,000. “In the past few years, the essence of the Tomatina had been lost,” said Rafael Perez, Bunol’s Deputy Mayor and top Tomatina official. “There was no space and it was quite dangerous. But now it is much more enjoyable, and Bunol locals who had stopped attending are coming back to it.” He added: “The entry fee has enabled us to finance the fiesta and make it safer.” This year, organis-
What a dope! A BRITISH man was arrested by Arona police this week after they discovered he was growing over 600 marijuana plants in Las Rosas.
The Local Police Prevention Unit (UPP) nabbed a 58-year-old in
a house on a plantation there for growing a narcotic substance. Agents, who found 603 plants, said an undercover task force acted after a tip-off. It is understood that the man boasted of having 100 cannabis plants on the roof of that house. The cops followed him for a few days before the arrest. And after
entering the two-storey home, they discovered that most of the rooms were equipped for rapid plant growth. The rooms were closed and had fans, exhaust fans and 600watt lamps to accelerate growth. The plants weighed a total of 55 kilos, and the unnamed man remains in custody.
ers offered 5,000 tickets free to locals, while a further 17,000 have been sold most via tour companies that bus revellers to Bunol and fill them with sangria and paella. They also launched a music festival to keep revellers in town after the one-hour tomatopelting ritual ended at noon. The privatisation of the popular and lucrative event has sparked squabbling among the town’s politicians. Spain’s governing conservative Popular Party - in opposition in Bunol - has demanded an investigation into whether it is carried out legally by the town hall, led by the United Left party. “We cannot look the other way when there has been a suspected
case of corruption in an illegal privatisation of the festival,” Marcial Diaz, the PP’s local spokesman, told AFP. He said his party supported privatising the Tomatina, but he also alleged that Spaintastic “was awarded this business arbitrarily, without any kind of public contract or bidding process”. Deputy Mayor Perez denied the allegations, branding the PP’s lawsuit “a purely political move”. He added: “People in Bunol don’t understand it. There is great anger about this. They are soiling the image of Bunol and of the Tomatina. But we are not worried. We have most of the people of Bunol on our side.” He said the Tomatina had brought in 170,000
euros in ticket sales for the town hall, and a further 10,000 euros in sponsorship. Like many Spanish towns, Bunol is deep in debt following Spain’s financial crisis. According to a survey by financial newspaper Cinco Dias, based on figures from the Spanish treasury, Bunol had debts of 5.5m euros last year. The Tomatina started in the Forties, when locals brawling in the street at a folk festival seized tomatoes from a greengrocer’s stall and hurled them at each other. On Wednesday, participants threw an astonishing 125,000 tonnes of tomatoes produced especially for the Tomatina, despite complaints that it was a shameful a waste of food.

Adeje is Island’s new business launch-pad
ADEJE is the location for the first business accelerator event in the islands, with the Tenerife Launch48 Weekend for emerging businesses taking place on September 12-14.
“The objective is simple: pitch, build and launch”, is the slogan for the two-day event, hosted by FIT (Factory for Tourism Innovation) based in the
Adeje centre for tourism development, the CDTCA. Ermitas Moreira García, Adeje Councillor for Economic Development and Employment, says the weekend is designed to encourage new Canarian companies to get off the ground with a supported start-up. An innovate assessment will be offered by experienced business accelerator company Oxygen, one of the most important start-up groups in Europe. The idea of using
professional mentoring teams to accelerate business start-ups has taken root in major European cities. It is using synergies, innovative ideas and creative directions to create new businesses. Companies and sponsors can benefit hugely from these events and, in this case, the image of Tenerife as a technological and innovate hub, as well as a tourist destination, will also be promoted globally. Prior to the weekend, from September 8th-12th, there will be a
pre-acceleration event held in the ITER bioclimatic village in Granadilla. The Oxygen organisers say: “We’ll present a pre-accelerator programme that focuses on how you can take your start-up idea to the next level - while using our proven concoction of successful mentors, tools and board-level advice to help make your business a success. “And of course, there’ll be some hidden surprises on the way as we make the most of
this unique location.” A series of mentors will lead distinct groups through training sessions and workshops, helping develop new means of negotiations, with personal one-to-one inter-action, and finishing with a jury selection of the best business proposal. The mentors include Chris Chabot, platform relations manager at Twitter, Nick Holzherr, from Whisk, named Birmingham Young Professional of the year in 2011, and Simon Jenner, CEO and co-found-
er of Oxygen Accelerator. The events should encourage local business people in Adeje to “present and develop innovative ideas”. Councillor García said: “Hopefully, the ideas with the best business potential will receive all the support they need from the Adeje Department of Economic Development.” Anyone interested in taking part, or finding out more, should contact the CDTCA, 922 756 249 or FIT Canarias, 922 756 253.
Spanish pensioners in clover AS we read so often, millions of British pensioners are struggling to live on their state pensions.
But Spain’s old folk have no such worries. According to the Spanish Social Security, 8.04 billion euros was paid out in pensions last month - a 3.1% year-onyear growth. In Spain the average retirement pension is 1,001.93 euros - 2% higher than in the same period last year. The average pension from the Spanish Social Security system as a whole, which includes all the various types of pension available (re-
tirement, permanent disability, widowhood, orphanhood, and those paid out to relatives), was 872.48 euros per
month, representing a year-on-year increase of 1.7%. In the UK the pension is 113 pounds per week,
but that’s only if you have paid in for the full 30 years. There is no flat pension rate in Spain - it
is index-linked to the local cost of living. For example, a standard retirement pension in Madrid is close to 1.100
euros per month, while in the Canary Islands that figure drops to just 825 euros. The total number of contributory pensions in August stood at 9,218,521, which equates to a year-onyear increase of 1.4%. More than half of these - 5,570,406 - are retirement pensions, while 2,350,364 are widowhood pensions, 930,110 are permanent disability pensions, 329,130 are orphanhood pensions and 38,511 are pensions paid out to relatives. Spain has a reputation for looking after its old folk and, with the economy improving, there is no sign of the pensioners being short-changed.

Hurricane force? No, it’s Chubby Brown in the Sun IT has been a hot week in Tenerife. I know it’s meant to be hot in Tenerife in August, but even so. It’s not been an especially roasting summer so far, and maybe the weather Gods will make up for that in September. Talking of weather, I had to laugh at a story in one of the Spanish papers at the start of the week. It was obviously a slow news day and, believe me, they love to scare their readers as much as the Daily Express when it comes to the weather. This story, obviously written by some board intern, was predicting a hurricane “could” “possibly” “maybe” hit us at the end of the week. So forget the fact that a hurricane has never, ever, hit the Canaries. And the fact that the story was really about how the “ingredients” for a hurricane would be heading our way rather than an actual storm. Seriously, 500-odd kilometres south in the Cape Verde Islands, they often have decent
storms as they are in the path of the “ingredients” for hurricanes. And that’s all true. But here? Not in my lifetime, or a thousand lifetimes. Assuming that some rogue mega-hurricane doesn’t hit us today (Friday), then we welcome a different type of storm. Tickets are sold out for this weekend’s Roy Chubby Brown gigs at Showtime. Yes, it’s really him, No he didn’t try to get arrested to get out of the gig (I will ask him why he was reading The Sun when driving. I mean, come on, The Sun?). And NO, I don’t have any tickets. It always amazes me when people think there are tickets left for a sold-out gig. Them: “I know it’s sold-out, but Roscoe, it’s me.” Me: “I know it’s you, but it’s sold-out, soldout.” Them: “But it’s me.” Me: “I know it’s you. But which part of soldout do you not understand?” Them: “But it’s me.” And so it continues …

THIS week, the British community said goodbye to Ian Lennard, one of the most popular entertainers on the Island.
Ian passed away a couple of weeks ago, and a large crowd paid their respects at a memorial service at the Christian Fellowship in Los Cristianos. He was born in Saltburn, in the north-east of England, and spent his formative years in Redcar. It was quite evident from an early age that music was in his bones. He loved the Beatles and would go to his local record store frequently from the age of 10, popping his pocket money on the counter and asking if they had a new record out yet. Ian performed his first gig at 13. His first paid gig came the following
year, when he opened with the Neil Diamondpenned Monkees’ I’m a Believer, a song he often gave a nod to in later years. The Lakes Club in Redcar was his first regular gig, supporting, among others, another local lad, Paul Rodgers, who obviously went on to far bigger and better things (lead singer of Free and Bad Company). Over the next few years, Ian took up flute, keyboard and drums, and became what the Showcall Guide called a “dynamic multi-instrumentalist with star quality”. He worked all over the north and into Scotland, often away a week or so at a time. He told tales of his digs, fried breakfast eggs that slid off the plate, landladies who offered “extras”, and the complaints his agent received because
women kept stealing his promo photos off the notice boards at his gigs. A change of scenery beckoned and in the early Eighties, he took to the seas with DFDS Cruise Lines, on board the Dana Regina. Epirotiki came next, along with warmer climes, calmer seas … and piano playing. He worked on the Jupiter and Oceanos out of Piraeus. Both sank soon after his contracts finished! Tenerife beckoned. Well, to be more accurate, his agent offered him a gig in a “piano bar” in Tenerife after the Jupiter sank in October 1988. He turned up on 6th January 1989 with his guitar, keyboards, dinner suit and a suitcase. He went to work …at the Caledonian in the bowels of Veronicas. That lasted two days! From there he went
to the Sunset Bar, and thereafter to Amanda’s/ The Tucan. Future residencies saw him at the Yomely Music Bar (better known now as the Wigan Arms at Starco) and his bestknown spell at the Brewers Droop. In the mid-Nineties, he joined Oasis Fm as Production Manager, before returning to the stage in more recent years. He produced many a backing track for the Island’s entertainers, and was still busy and in demand right up to his passing at the age of 62. Ian had an incredible gift, but he never saw it that way. He never really realised how talented he was. He used shrug off praise. He thought that was “normal”. Ian is survived by his wife Maggie, daughters Nikki and Jo plus three granddaughters Mia, Sarah and Luena.

Olive oil faces the crunch A DROUGHT in Spain and a blight in Italy, which has withered branches, could force up the price of olive oil.
Months of dry weather have struck the world’s biggest producer of the “yellow gold” - Andalusia in the south of Spain, In Italy, the next biggest grower, the bacteria xylella fastidiosa has shrivelled olive branches in the southern Puglia region. Raffaele Piano, an olive farmer in Puglia, says: “Prices will rise by 30-40% because there will be fewer olives and,
therefore, less oil produced,” But he told Parisbased news agency AGFP: “Quality will not be affected. There is no cure. The only solution is to burn the infected trees to stop the bacteria spreading quickly.” Producers in parched Spain say they expect their prices to rise as well over the coming months as the October harvest approaches, But they are unsure of predicting by how much. Already, though, in an early alert, the market price of virgin olive oil has crept up over recent weeks, from 2.40 euros to 2.70 euros a
kilogram, according to Spanish olive oil federation Infaoliva, which warns the rise will continue. Fewer olives rolling into farmers’ nets this autumn is a recipe for higher prices when combined with evermounting demand worldwide. Olive oil has long been a staple of the Mediterranean diet, and over recent decades it has become popular in cooking in many parts of the world because of its perceived health benefits. Demand has surged by 60% in the past 20 years, driven by China, the US, Australia and
Canada, says the International Olive Oil Council. Spain produced 1.77 million tonnes of olives in the last harvest, from October 2013 to June 2014, according to the agriculture ministry. Last season was exceptional. “Production was very big -40% higher than the average of the previous four years,” said Cristobal Gallego, an olive oil official for a co-operative of food producers in Andalusia. “Everything indicates that the next harvest will be very close to the level of the one two years ago, which was just 618,000 tonnes,” he added.
Enrique Delgado Hidalgo, secretary general of Infaoliva, forecast that the harvest could be “between 800,000 and a million tonnes”. The harvest will be limited, but sufficient to supply the domestic and international markets,” he added. Germany-based analysis institute Oil World was more optimistic, estimating that Spain will produce between 900,000 and 1.1 million tonnes this coming harvest. A price rise, meanwhile, would be “good news for producers, who suffered losses when strong production last year drove prices down,” said Thomas Mielke, director of Oil World. “In the life cycle of olive
groves, there is often a decline in production per tree after a year of strong production, which will be aggravated this year in Spain by the drought.” Watering the olive trees cannot make up for the lack of rain in sweltering Andalusia, Gallego. In the heart of the poor farming region of Andalusia, where olive groves blanket the hillsides as far as the eye can see, the province of Jaen alone accounts for 45% of Spain’s production. It is among the areas hit by the drought. And Ahead of the harvest, which starts in October, farmers will be watching the skies for signs of September rain which could change their fortunes.
ALL three crew members aboard a Spanish police helicopter, flying to rescue a mountain climber, were killed when it crashed.
Guardia Civil pilots and a member of a mountain rescue team. A fourth rescue-team member, who had already left the copter in search of the injured climber, who had broken his ankle, sounded the alarm. Emergency services, including three helicopters and an ambulance, were dispatched to the scene and found the bodies of all three men, aged 48, 50 and 56. The cause of the accident is under investiga-
tion, but Spanish media reported that the area was engulfed in fog at the time. The injured climber was transported to hospital by another police helicopter. The Picos de Europa range is a favourite among walkers, trekkers and climbers. It is said to be one of Europe’s most-challenging mountain ranges, with changeable weather and treacherous terrain full of chasms and gorges.
Two safety spots Three rescue crew for Las Chafiras die in copter crash AN investment of nearly 200,000 euros by Tenerife Cabildo will improve the safety of vehicles and pedestrians crossing roads in Las Chafiras and San Miguel. José Luis Delgado, Minister of Roads and Landscape, has announced that work will start soon - and is long overdue! Delgado said: “Work needs to be done to stop the constant bottlenecks in the region. For motorists, it can be a daily and con-
stant struggle. “During peak hours, long queues of vehicles produce tail-backs on the shoulder of the TF1 towards Santa Cruz and to enter the roundabout. This must stop.” This work has been mooted for a while because the Las Chafiras approach can be dangerous. Quite often, there are trucks or buses speeding past at over 120 kph, while vehicles are queuing on the hard-shoulder. The new bill passed
by the Council is the creation of two parallel rails: one that directs the vehicles to Las Galletas and the other to do the same towards San Miguel. There is currently a single lane where all vehicles wanting to leave the highway to go to these areas are concentrated. In addition, to prevent trucks and buses from speeding by the roundabouts on the motorway, a concrete barrier will be built.
The helicopter blades struck the side of a mountain close to the Picos de Europa range in the north-western province of Leon. It then slid down the rock face, killing two

Over-60s are a splash hit!
ADEJE senior’s programme has just celebrated 15 years of summer fun and activities for the borough’s older generation.
Councillor Carmen Rosa González Cabrera, in charge of proceedings, said that, as ever, they all enjoyed a range of diverse, open-air activities. And, as in previous years, Adeje beaches featured for many of the events, which mixed fun with healthy activities. As well as promoting Adeje’s harmonious coexistence among people of varying backgrounds, older citizens mixed with some of the younger ones. It was one of this year’s novelties: the integration of people from dif-
ferent age groups and sectors locally. In conjunction with the “Activate Sonrisa” (Activate Smile) project run by the Department of Economic Development, some 50 older people took part in workshops and games in the company of children involved in parallel summer camps. For 15 consecutive years, Adeje seniors have availed themelves of a summer programme of events, the principle objective being, said Carmen Rosa González: “Benefits for those of a certain age through recreational and healthy activities.” For two days a week throughout the summer, the group enjoyed swimming, games on the sand, walking and gymnastics, adapted
to ability and age. The Councillor added: “It led, in general, to an overall improvement in the quality of life of our senior citizens.” To ensure a full house every time, a bus travelled around the borough collecting those older folk without transport, and returning them home afterwards. Usually, events took place in parts of Costa Adeje, allowing people to enjoy the borough’s best beaches - most of them flying prestigious Blue Flags for excellence. To mark the end of the programme, a Hawaiian party was held with a “Miss and Mister” fashion parade, followed by lunch and beach bingo. It was, said Carmen Rosa González: “A great end to another great summer.”
Wannabe singer’s kidnap con on dad A SPANISH woman, anxious to record an album, faked her own kidnapping to entice ransom money from her father to pay for it.
The 22-year-old flew to Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic, without telling her family on 14th August to meet a man she had started chatting with online a few months earlier, The following day, police said in a statement, the father received a telephone call at his Cata-
lonia home in Anoia, telling him his daughter had been kidnapped. “The man could hear his daughter crying, and the voice of a man with a South American accent warning him that the young woman’s life was in danger, read the statement. The alleged kidnapper called the father again three days later to demand 6,000 euros) for her safe return. Again the woman could be heard crying in the background. Her father then contacted Spanish police, who searched through her social media sites
and identified the 23-year-old man she had travelled to the Caribbean island to meet. They then informed Dominican Republican police. They took little time in finding the pair, who confessed they had faked the kidnapping. “The woman admitted it was all a ploy to obtain money from the father to produce a record since she wanted to be a singer,” the police statement added. Police arrested the woman when she arrived at Madrid airport on Thursday. She was charged with extortion and faking a crime.

Ice bucket man drowns COREY GRIFFIN, the man virtually responsible for introducing the ice bucket challenge to the entire world, has been drowned in a divimg accident.
The 27-year-old philanthropist helped turn the new phenomenon into a fund-raising sensation for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) after his friend Pete Frates was diagnosed with the disease. He was diving off the coast of Nantucket, Massachusetts, from a wharf when he re-
surfacing once before disappearing back under the water and drowning. According to an obituary in the Boston Globe, newspaper, his father Robert described him as “the happiest guy in the world. He called me last night and told me he was in paradise.” Griffin, who climbed

the Juice Guys building in Nantucket before jumping off the wharf, was said to have collected $100,000 (76,000 euros) from a fund-raiser just hours before his death, The ice bucket challenge, in which people literally have a bucket of ice thrown over them for fund-raising ventures, has been one of the biggest talking points online in the past few days. Several personalities, including Oprah Winfrey, Justin Bieber, Britney Spears, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Lady Gaga, Charlie Sheen, George Bush and the Foo Fighters, have all taken part in the cam-
paign. And even Russian leader Vladimir Putin has been challenged to undergo the ice treatment The US drive has so far raised $22.9m in aid of ALS myotrophic lateral sclerosis. And millions more around the world has already been realised for various charities. Frates wrote on Facebook: “Helping out was nothing new for Griff. He held his own event for me back in 2012, just a few months after diagnosis. “He worked his butt off these last few weeks for ASL. We texted every day, planning and scheming ways to raise funds and plan events.”
Help, I’m party to a kidnap!
POLICE have smashed a gang of luxury watch thieves operating on Ibiza.
They arrested two leaders of the Camorra, the mafia network based in Naples con-
trolling the gang. They also nabbed three other Italians, said to be experts in stealing watches and “evasive driving” as part of the elaborate operation, Two of the suspects, a man and a woman, rented an apartment in the most upmarket
area of Ibiza Town, the holiday island’s capital, and spent time in its port and other luxury areas seeking out potential targets. “Once they selected their target and had verified which type of watch they owned -
and if it could be sold in Italy - the stalking phase began,” said a police statement. “They observed what time the victim arrived and left, what his/ her main routine was, to determine the best moment to steal the watch.” The gang, who arrived on the Mediterranean island in May, targeted watches costing at least 10,000 euros which they then sent to Italy. Ibiza, the smallest of the three main Balearic islands, is one of Europe’s top tourist destinations. The island, known for its luxury nightclubs and turquoise waters, draws rich and famous visitors from around the world, including US hotel heiress Paris Hilton and British model Kate Moss.
STUNNED police, who staged a huge search for a man who told his girlfriend he had been kidnapped, discovered he was simply enjoying a late-night party.
The 32-year-old claimed he was being held hostage and his “captor” would release him if a £50 debt was paid. The worried woman called police after speaking to his socalled kidnapper on the phone, and receiving various text messages. But her boyfriend was actually whooping it up at a house party in Bolton. Following the alarm, house-to-house inquiries began, CCTV footage studied, and mobile phone data analysed to try to trace him. A number of properties were searched, and a man was arrested on suspicion of kidnap. He was later released after admitting it was a “ruse” to allow his pal to stay out longer.
Greater Manchester Police then tracked down the party-goer in the early hours of Saturday. Detective inspector Jo Clawson said: “The man’s girlfriend was absolutely beside herself with worry, and genuinely concerned that he would come to harm. “Considerable resources and time then went into finding this man, who made the entire thing up so he could stay out and party. “This is, without doubt, one of the most foolish and irresponsible incidents I have been involved in. “Significant resources were taken off the front line on a Friday night, which is, without exception, one of the busiest times of the week.” But officers decided not to waste more police resources and public money by taking him to court. Instead, he was given a fixed-penalty notice for wasting police time - and the matter was recorded as a criminal conviction on his record.

Sherlock cracks Emmy riddle SHERLOCK, the BBC One’s top drama, collected a hat-trick of awards at Sunday’s 2014 Emmys in Los Angeles.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman won Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor in a mini-series, although neither was at the ceremony. Scotland’s Steven Moffat also won Best Writing in a mini-series for the final episode of Sherlock’s third season. Ben Stephenson, controller of BBC drama, said: “It’s great to see Sherlock being recognised so spectacularly at the Emmys. I’m delighted that the BBC is home to so much worldclass acting and writing talent.” Although there was a considerable group of British talent nominated, Colin Bucksey was the only other domestic success, winning a Best Director award for Fargo, which beat BBC series Luther in the miniseries category.
ITV drama Downton Abbey walked away empty-handed despite several nominations. Biggest winner of the night was drug drama Breaking Bad, which scooped five awards, including Best Drama series. It was the second successive year that the show, which ended last September after five seasons, had picked up the event’s highest hon-
our. Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston was named Best Actor in a drama series for a fourth time, as the teacherturned-drug kingpin Walter White. Cranston, who beat a host of Hollywood heavyweights, including Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson for their roles in the acclaimed crime drama True Detective, said: “I have gratitude
for everything that has happened,” His co-stars Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn were also honoured for Best Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress in a drama series. Vince Gilligan, the Breaking Bad creator, said after collecting the award for Best Drama series: “Holy cow! This is indeed a wonderful time to be working in television. Thank you
for this wonderful farewell to our show.” In other categories, The Good Wife star Julianna Margulies won the Emmy for Best Lead Actress in a drama series for her role as lawyer Alicia Florrick. She said: “I feel like this is the golden age of television, but it’s also the time for women in television, I feel very grateful to be here.” There were also Best
Actress and Best Supporting Actress awards in a mini-series for Oscar-winners Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates for their roles in American Horror Story: Coven. Best Comedy Series was won for the fifth consecutive year by Modern Family, while Julia Louis-Dreyfus collected the Best Actress award in a comedy series for her role in Veep. Allison Janney won the best supporting actress in a comedy series for Mom. The ceremony also paid tribute to industry members who died in the past year, including James Garner, Ruby Dee, Sid Caesar, Carmen Zapata and Elaine Stritch. The show ended with a special homage to Robin Williams by long-time friend Billy Crystal, who remembered the actor as “the brightest star in a comedy galaxy”. Crystal added: “It is very hard to talk about him in the past because he was so present in our lives.”

Film legend Attenborough had a real passion for life T R I B U T E S poured in this week for Richard Attenborough, the hugelyrespected Oscarwinning British film director, who died on Sunday at the age of 90.
Lord Attenborough led a dual role in British films: he was one of the leading actors and went on to become a highly-successful director. In a career covering six decades, he appeared in such films as Brighton Rock, World War Two thriller The Great Escape and, later, in dinosaur blockbuster Jurassic Park. As a director, he was probably best known for Gandhi, which won him two Oscars. Sir Ben Kingsley, who played the title role, said he would miss him dearly.
“Richard Attenborough trusted me with the crucial and central task of bringing to life a dream it took him 20 years to bring to fruition, said Sir Ben. “When he gave me the part of Gandhi, it was with great grace and joy. He placed in me an absolute trust and, in turn, I placed an absolute trust in him and grew to love him.”
Jurassic Park director Steven Spielberg said Lord Attenborough was passionate about everything in his life. “He made a gift to the world with his emotional epic Gandhi, and he was the perfect ringmaster to bring the dinosaurs back to life as John Hammond in Jurassic Park,” he added. “He was a dear friend, and I am standing in
an endless line of those who completely adored him.” Lord Attenborough had been in a nursing home with his wife for a number of years, He had also been in a wheelchair since falling down stairs six years ago. Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted: “His acting in Brighton Rock was brilliant, his directing of Gandhi was
stunning - Richard Attenborough was one of the greats of cinema.” Jurassic Park actress Ariana Richards said: “He was a light in my life.” And veteran actress Mia Farrow tweeted: “Richard Attenborough was the kindest man I have ever had the privilege of working with. A Prince. RIP ‘Pa’ - and thank you.” Former Channel 4 and BBC executive Lord Grade said Lord Attenborough had “phenomenal” energy and compassion. “Dickie was essentially a man who put much more in than he ever took out of the industry,” he stressed. Lord Grade also said Lord Attenborough had “huge authority”, recalling a meeting in which he “banged the desk and frightened the life out of “then home secretary Douglas Hurd and a group of civil servants.
British Film Institute chief executive Amanda Nevill said Lord Attenborough was a “born communicator”, through film and in person. “He was a man of huge warmth and integrity, but always a man with a cause,” she said. “He was somebody who really understood Gandhi was such a powerful tool that could be used to influence and capture hearts and change the world.” A tribute was also paid to the Labour peer from his party, saying: “Lord Attenborough made an enormous contribution to our country and to the film industry. His films will be loved for generations to come. “He believed passionately in social justice and the Labour Party, and was a vocal campaigner against apartheid. “He will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”

OVER the last few years, the use of social networks has increased tenfold. People are relying, more and more, on Facebook, Whatsapp and Twitter to stay in touch with friends and family.
This time of year on the Island, the buzz around the annual Tenerife Entertainment Awards (TEAs) creates plenty of activity, especially on Facebook. In previous years, there has sometimes been scepticism about the way social networks are used to promote an individual. But so far, the social networks have been rather quiet with regard to their use to gain nominations or votes. In the past, the overpromotion of an artiste on Facebook has sometimes had a negative effect on that performer’s credibility. After asking the organisers if this has affected the amount of nominations coming in, I was
17 CW
Facebook quieter on TEAs’ front
informed that the response has been as strong as it is every year. It begs the question: does Facebook actually make a difference to the final number of votes? I believe the answer is Yes, but the nominations and votes generated through a couple of clicks on a mouse generally come from people who have never even seen the artiste perform in Tenerife. Things seem very different this year online, with many artistes choosing to post simple links to the TEAs’ website or Facebook page. Some, who are normally very active at this time of year, have been really quiet online and have chosen to see what happens without
blasting everybody’s news feed with requests for a nomination. Last week, the Best Newcomer category was my point of focus. This week I ask the question: which award is the most prestigious? It’s a difficult question to answer because the award, whatever category it comes in, is important to that individual. But, the three that seem to carry more weight are the Best Male/Female Vocalist and The Best Compere. I feel this is because there are so many more artistes that qualify for a nomination. If you are “the chosen one” and win an award against over 100 people in the category, you become the winner of many, as opposed to
some of the other categories, where certain genres of entertainer are grouped together. Take Best Variety Award, for example, where you would become a winner from a few. There are a smaller number of entertainers in this category, but a higher concentration of talent. The solo vocalist categories may contain more who qualify, but they also contain lots who are quite simply not up to the mark and will receive nominations from their family only! The Best Compere category is wide open. Previous years have been dominated by the extremely popular Mike Carlton, who has since returned to the UK to ply his trade. Other comperes who have left the Island in the last 12 months were always prominent every year, so this time I believe this category will see a few different names in the mix. Again, this category carries a much-soughtafter award, and there are so many comperes on the Island who deserve recognition.
Having said that, the live vote on the day of the awards has to be the most prestigious, simply because you are being judged by nearly a 1,000 strong crowd on the performance produced there and then. Last year, Pip Brown stole the show by entering the stage from the back of the building in a suit that lit up towards the end of the performance. It’s all about the show on the day. This year, there are two categories being judged live, and they will be announced at the end of the nomination process. It is going to be a fabulous afternoon of enter-
tainment and, if nothing else, will bring those together who work and support this amazing scene we have here in Tenerife. There is still time to nominate your favourite artiste for an award, and there are two ways to do this. You can send an email to nominate@teaawards. com stating the name of your chosen artiste. The other way is by SMS text message to (0034) 639 101 311. For any other details, visit www.teaawards. com - or see the full-page ad on page 10 of this issue. Good luck to all who tread the boards.

A Different View
By Mike Walsh MANY will remember Sir. John Harvey Jones. The TV business guru was much admired for his no-nonsense approach to identifying and resolving business problems.
His approach to business is very similar to mine. For 20 years, I was senior business assessment manager for the Guild of Master Craftsmen. Guild members, considered the UK’s most prestigious quality assurance regulatory body, include Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, Harrods, the Ritz and Spain’s El Parador Hotels. Businesses need health checks just as much as people do. Here, I set- out three overviews that might
29th August 2014 - 4th September 2014
Give your business a big health check
health-check your business, offer solutions to problems - or simply inspire you. Successful advertising Why do you think the bookies have six paying-in tills, but only one that pays out? For me, gambling is a mug’s game. Then, during a moment’s reflection I had to admit that I have gambled all of my life. Every time I started a new job or business venture, I speculated. Each time I pulled my plastic out and advertised in a newspaper or on the radio, I gambled on it being a success. We all have to advertise, including those manufacturing household name-brands. If you don’t yell, you don’t sell. But how do you make your advertisement work for you? There are no guarantees, but you can increase the chances of it doing so. Never blame the mes-
senger. It is up to you to sell your business by making good use of an advertisement. Newspaper and radio advertising departments will help you, but the obligation to sell your service is yours. Every salesman has heard the term KISS. It is an acronym of Keep It Simple, Stupid. In marketing reading time, you have about five seconds to grab the reader’s attention and interest him enough to
act: check the content out. It should work to this plan: 1) Attention, 2) Interest, 3) Desire, 4) Action. (AIDA). An advertisement or flier’s word content should never exceed 50 words. Keep to the point and remember to include contact details, such as directions, phone numbers, website link and email address. The advert is your shop window. Use it to lure them inside. When customers need your service in future, they will refer back to it. For this reason, a regular advert in a newspaper or on radio is more cost-effective than the occasional half-page. Suggest to readers that they cut your advert out and keep it. Don’t advertise your business; instead, advertise how your business can help readers. A special offer or discount always attracts interest. Look at what your rivals are advertising and sell something different. Having attracted new clients, treat them right and you will discover the best advertisement is word of mouth. The importance of body language in selling To succeed in selling, awareness of body language is essential. Most are aware of sales terms like ‘buying signals’, ‘the close’ and ‘body language’. But do we really understand their importance? Let us look at body language. Well named, it means the positive or negative signals radiating from a client’s body
language as you set out your stall. Eye avoidance is clear indication of deceit. When you meet and greet, maintain eye contact with your client. If one has the upper hand during the handshake, it suggests dominance. Time’s up: if toes point the opposite way to the direction of his face, he cannot wait to end the conversation. When invited to take a seat, you have just lost the sale if you take the boss’s chair. Much the same if you focus unevenly on his wife or secretary. Try to position your seat so you are not directly opposite and, if possible, without a desk between you. Never mind what your client says. He may nod approvingly, but if his arms are folded or legs crossed with lowered chin, he is negative and you can kiss the sale good-bye. Legs spaced apart with hands behind the neck are a strong buying signal. Size matters. Watch the pupils of his eyes as you show him what is on offer. Enlarged pupils means the client likes what he or she sees. Reduced size means they are under-whelmed. This is the reason why astute gamblers wear dark glasses. It is something we have no control over. If your client scratches his nose or covers his mouth when talking, he is possibly being deceitful. If he touches his sleeve, he is nervous. An interested client will show an interest in what you are saying; asking questions that enable him to confirm his decision to buy is the right one. One last thing: body language works both ways. How to close a sale This is stressful for most salesmen and women. Many sales’ books claim to offer the key to unlocking the secrets of closing a sale. These tend to confuse the reader and make matters worse. Many a grown man loses it when the time
comes to ask for the order. Unless the client asked many questions, I was able to reach the close in 30-minutes. However, I could not figure out why one of my sales’ staff was taking up to two hours to explain the benefits of his product. He was frightened of reaching the close, so he avoided it until the client did. The best advice I ever received on closing a sale could have been written on the back of my business card: “Ask for the order.” Closing the sale really is that simple, so why make a dog’s breakfast out of it?” There is, however, one trick that will substantially increase your success rate when closing. Clients are as hesitant of making a decision as the salesman is in asking for the order. Often, a decision to buy will be put off, and many ditherers have their excuses ready. Once they say No, or tell you they want to think about it, the sale is not going to happen. And never, ever ask outright for the order but use, instead, the “either this or that” close. When asking for an appointment, the best approach is to suggest: “I have an hour on Monday morning or Wednesday afternoon. Perhaps an hour in the evening might suit you better?” Never say: “Can I help you?” The response will invariable be: “No”. Ask instead: “How may I help you?” This will increase the chances of a customer responding well because it is difficult to say No to that proposal. The same rules apply when asking for the order. Always have an Option B to hand. “I think this plan would best suit your needs, but the cheaper plan B is a good deal, too. Which do you prefer?” That close is also difficult to say No to. I have seen salesmen and women double and even treble their sales simply by using the “either this or that” close.

Tonight’s show features a guest appearance from Morgana Robinson. It may be the start of a new year at Greybridge School, but the teaching staff is as dysfunctional as ever. Miss Postern (Catherine Tate) and Mr Church’s (David Walliams) relationship has taken a downward turn after a misunderstanding over a date; the woefully underqualified Mr Gunn (Philip Glenister) is now teaching geography; and Mr Barber’s (Steve Spiers) got a new job as the school caretaker. When Miss Postern sets up a careers workshop, it seems her slogan ‘Which way now?’ applies as much to her as it does her pupils, not least because the guest speaker is her old teacher training colleague (and now bestselling children’s author) Fenella Forbes (Morgana Robinson). But at least things are looking up for one member of staff, as it seems Mr Martin (Daniel Rigby) is about to launch a successful pop career...

W C choice Andrew Marr’s Great Scots: The Writers Who Shaped a Nation BBC2, 21:15
Documentary series. Andrew Marr explores the writers who have reflected, defined and challenged Scottish national identity over the last three hundred years. In this episode he looks into the life of poet Hugh MacDiarmid. MacDiarmid reinvented Scots as a language for serious writing, at various times called for a Scottish fascism, tried to create an independent Scottish communist utopia, and was for many years under surveillance by MI5. During his life he was involved in plots to capture Edinburgh Castle and steal the Stone of Destiny, but he also found time for a literary life in which he would write the most powerful poetry in Scots since the days of Robert Burns, and to start a Scottish Renaissance that goes on to this day.

Nature’s Miracle Orphans BBC1, 19.00 Presenter Ellie Harrison is in Australia with carer Sue, who has dedicated her life and home to rehabilitating baby wombats. Ellie follows Stacey, a five-month-old bare-nosed wombat who has been under Sue’s care for four weeks since her mother was run over. It’s important for wombats like Stacey to get used to the outside world and Ellie witnesses Stacey’s first trip into Sue’s garden. She and Sue then begin a search for a suitable companion for Stacey, so she can learn to interact with other wombats - a vital part of her rehabilitation back into the wild. Meanwhile in Costa Rica, baby three-toed sloth Newbie has started to respond to the new medicine treating her pneumonia. Presenter Max Hug Williams and Newbie’s carer Sam rescue a two-toed sloth that is just days old. Named Tiny by Sam, he is one of the smallest sloths she has looked after at the centre. Max also meets wildlife carer Hannah, who has Al, the ten-month-old anteater, under her care. In the wild Al will need thousands of termites and ants a day to sustain him and Max follows Al’s progress as he learns to forage and handle the troublesome ants for himself.
Come On Down! The Game Show Story ITV1, 19.00 Presented by Bradley Walsh, Come On Down! The Game Show Story is a four-part series for ITV telling the definitive history of the TV game show. Featuring classic archive and interviews with some of the biggest names in entertainment, this series charts the key moments in game show history and tells the story behind some of our best-loved game and quiz shows. In this final episode of the series Bradley looks at how the game show has evolved through changing times - from the incredible sets on shows like The Cube and Total Wipeout to the clever gimmicks that give each show its unique selling point. Bradley meets the man known to millions over 40 years ago as Bernie The Bolt – and has a go himself at lining up the famous prop from The Golden Shot. We also see how the role of women has changed in game show history – from the early days of game show hostesses like Anne Aston to the impact of presenters like Anneka Rice (Treasure Hunt) and Carol Vorderman (Countdown) in the 1980s. There’s also a chance to see how game show catchphrases have developed over the years and we relive the moments when, despite all that developing technology, things didn’t always go to plan. Come On Down! The Game Show Story also features interviews with game show stars past and present, including Sir Bruce Forsyth, Ant and Dec, Carol Vorderman, Sir Terry Wogan, Phillip Schofield, Vernon Kay, Les Dennis, Jim Bowen, Stephen Mulhern, Ben Shephard and Amanda Byram.

Secrets of the Body Snatchers. Tony Robinson uncovers the shocking truth behind some of the most gruesome events of the 19th century, when criminals would break open graves at night to steal freshly buried bodies. Serial murderers like Burke and Hare chalked up double figures, driven by profit funded by a revolution in medicine that was desperate for corpses to dissect. And extraordinary new research shows that the horror continued long after the Anatomy Act was introduced in 1830. In 1800, the only cadavers that were legally available to medical schools were a few executed criminals. So criminal gangs supplied snatched or murdered corpses to surgeons.

How Britain Worked Channel 4, 19:00
Third-generation lorry mechanic, motorcycle racer and engineering enthusiast Guy Martin celebrates the workers of the Industrial Revolution by getting stuck into six of the country’s biggest restoration projects. In this episode, Guy has a dual task: to get a Yorkshire sawmill Gayle Mill in Wensleydale - up and running again, and then use it to make a replica of one of the less-celebrated inventions of the Victorian era: the first pedal-powered bicycle. Using his engineering skills, Guy helps the restoration team repair the ingenious water turbine that’s needed to power the whole mill, but which is currently leaking 43 litres of water a second. He opes in his old mate Mave, who’s a carpenter, to help fell a tree by hand, transport it to the mill on a steam traction engine and then use it to make his bike. Along the way, Guy learns about the lives of factory workers: the foot soldiers of the Industrial Revolution.

BBC1, 22.35 In the year 2000, BBC started 7 Up 2000, a new cycle of the landmark Up documentary series that charts the lives of ordinary people every seven years. Directed by Julian Farino, this new series featured children from all over the UK, from hugely varied backgrounds. Seven years on, the same production team returned to these children as they reached 14, to see how they had changed. Now, in 2014, we catch up with them again as they approach the milestone of their 21st birthdays. Having left school at 16, John from Slough is learning the building trade and working hard to support his passions – music and BMX. He loves the independence that comes with having a job and having his own place. Ryan, who has cerebral palsy is also enjoying the independence that learning to drive has given him. He is living at home with his mum in Bolton while completing a sports studies degree and his biggest goal is to play on the GB wheelchair rugby team. At 14, Alex who grew up in North London always imagined she would living abroad. At 21 we find her in Paris, where she is spending a year as an Erasmus student as part of the degree she is taking at Kings College London. We first met Orala in Hackney, where her Nigerian born mother, stepfather and siblings still live. Orala is now a final year student at Reading University, though she still feels much more at home in London, where she can pursue her passion for songwriting and performing. Asif is the eldest boy of a large Pakistani Muslim family from a suburb of Glasgow. At seven he attended a mosque school every day after school, and at 14 attended the local mosque up to five times a day. Assessed as dyslexic at 13, he found school difficult in his teenage years. At 21, he is close to finishing a law degree and relishes his time with his friends, loves music and running. Jamie was born and still lives in Belfast, where he is studying computer science and is a passionate member of the Alliance party. Considering himself neither Catholic nor Protestant, he is committed to campaigning for a party that wants to bring an end to sectarianism in Northern Ireland.

Real Estate dictionary
By Mariano Zunino Siri
MONTHS ago, I promised to do a kind of dictionary or glossary related to real estate legal matters. And you’ve probably heard about these words: Abogado: Attorney; Lawyer. A person designated to act for another in legal affairs. In real estate matters, a buyer or seller of real estate may wish to hire a lawyer to review legal documents and provide advice on accepting the legal obligations of the sales contract. Adquirente: See Comprador. Comprador/Parte compradora: Buyer, Purchaser). In sales contracts, the party which pays the sales price and takes ownership of the property. Ejecución Hipotecaria: Foreclosure. A legal procedure whereby property pledged as security for a debt (mortgage) is
sold to pay the defaulted debt. Foreclosure gives a lender the right to sell property pledged for a debt. All parties in a mortgage loan contract should be aware about its consequences. Gestoría: Company that handles paperwork for obtaining official authorisations, permits, licences etc. Gestor is the person who normally presents at the authorities (Tax Office, Social Security) all the papers connected to the business. Impuesto sobre Bienes
Inmuebles (IBI): Rates. Spanish yearly property tax paid to Town Hall. Impuesto sobre Actos Jurídicos Documentados: Stamp Duty. Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales: Transfer Tax. Tax to be paid by the purchaser after buying a property (is a percentage on the assessed property value). Impuesto sobre el Incremento del Valor de Terrenos: Municipal Tax, payable on the increased land value. This tax, also called Plusvalía, is paid to the
Town Hall where the property is located. Inmobiliaria: Estate agent. Libre de cargas: Free of charges. Applicable to the property that has no mortgage, no attachment (embargo). Licencia de obra: Building licence. NIE: Foreigner Identity Number. This number is applied at the police station and later the Tax Office can give you the NIF (Tax Identity Number). Nota simple: Land registry informative record. Parcela: Plot of land
(also solar). Poder notarial: Power of attorney. There are many types of Poder, depending of the authorisation the grantee has. Promoter: Property developer. Registro de la propiedad: Land Registry. In this registry all the properties of the area are registered. Every finca (property) has a number for identification and is recorded showing the name of the owner, charges of the property and any relevant information that affects the property.
Representante fiscal: Tax representative. Se alquila: For rent. Se vende: For sale. Seguro (compañía): Insurance company. Señal: Deposit, downpayment. Subvención: Subsidy. Grant. Superficie útil: Useable area of the property. Tasación: valuation. Terreno (solar, parcela): Plot of land. Titulo de propiedad: Title Deed. This public document states the ownership of property, date of sale, charges, features, number of finca, etc. Transmisión/Traspaso: To deed or transfer title to another. Means a sale or transfer of ownership. Valor catastral: Cadastral value. Registered value of land at the Town Hall needed to liquidate the IBI. VPO (Vivienda de Protección Oficial): Lowcost housing subsidised by the state. There are many legal words related to this matter. If someone wants the meaning of any legal Spanish word, please contact Canarian Weekly and I will gladly include the explanation in future columns.
Holiday lets: Ten top tips! ALL HOMEOWNERS must have their paperwork correct before even considering entering the letting market.
Rules governing holiday lets are controlled by regional governments, meaning owners who do not prepare in advance may not have their property ready in time for when they need to. It is highly likely you will need a licence or approval of sorts from the local town hall to let your property legally. There are also strict rules governing holiday lets in the Canaries. Typically, homes in residential areas which are not part of a tourist complex cannot be let without a licence - and obtaining one is not easy.
Meanwhile, properties which form part of a tourist complex are usually obliged to use a certain letting agent, registered as a sole agent for that complex. Advice should be taken from an experienced letting agent to ensure you stay within the rules and don’t leave yourself exposed to large fines, either in the Canaries or in the Costas. However,
once the paperwork is sorted, it’s time to prepare your property. And to enable things to run smoothly, here are 10 tips to help you get started. 1. Get to grips with the local rules for receiving paying guests. Depending on the location, you may be required to give their passport details to the local police station, just as hotels must re-
cord these details. You may also need to collect a tourist tax from your guests. 2. Declare your rental income. The UK has double-tax treaties with most European countries, including Spain, so you won’t pay the same tax twice. 3. Choose your agent carefully. An agent can take away much of the hassle of rentals, so look for one who has a good reputation locally. Normally they will charge 15-20% of the rent received and, although this can seem a lot of money, they will ensure your property is well-maintained, supply cleaners, meet and greet visitors and be on call if there are problems. 4. If you manage your property, be prepared to work hard. You will need to be on 24-hour call for emergencies.
5. Present your property well. Cleanliness is paramount, and tourists from all over the world expect high standards. Small things matter. TV, Satellite, Wi-Fi and DVDs are often expected these days! 6. Offer a welcome pack. Sometimes visitors arrive late, the shops are closed and they don’t want to go to out to eat. 7. Information about what is happening in your area is gratefully accepted. Little things can help your reputation. 8. Get suitable insurance. Your household and contents insurance policy should be provide adequate cover for holiday rentals, including the necessary third party liability and cover for vacant periods. 9. Price your property realistically. Find simi-
lar rental properties to yours on the internet to get an idea of rental rates, and what is included in those rates. 10. Plan for a rainy day. Things don’t always run smoothly so get the finances right from the start. This includes making sure you are paid correctly and in all eventualities. Also, decide how you want payment of deposit, damage deposit and balance. An example could be: 30% deposit to be paid upon booking by cheque, transfer or PayPal. Balance to be paid six weeks before arrival, via the same method. Damage deposit to be sent by cheque with the balance (or handed in on arrival in return for an up-to-date inventory) and returned or destroyed once the apartment has been checked after the holiday.

For example, it could be that the sofa is faded or worn, or that the curtains have suffered with the heat of the sun we are lucky enough to enjoy pretty much all year round. In any case, all is not lost, and you don’t need to spend huge sums of money to bring your property back up to standard. And while you’re at it, why not consider a change of colour scheme as well? The typical apartment years ago here in Tenerife was pine furniture, and busy floral fabrics. Nowadays, you are more likely to see white furniture, and the soft furnishings in neutrals. People have learned that if you keep the base colour neutral, you can use pops of colour to lift the whole colour scheme without it being a permanent feature. So, for example, if you reupholster your sofa in a beige or blue, you can introduce some bright jewel colours
and patterns in the cushions. And if you get tired of them, you can just change them again! Some clients who have called us this week are existing Deco Nuevo customers, and, after 10 years, their apartment was starting to look a bit flat. You would be amazed how different you can make somewhere look with a coat of paint, a change of curtains and a few bright cushions. The final touch can be a picture that picks up the accent colour, and it looks like you have a totally new house, while only actually spending a few hundred euros in total. We’ve also had contact from some new clients who have bought
a repossession apartment without even coming over to see it, and we will install the furniture before they arrive so that they can move straight in. They will have everything they need, right down to kettle and toaster, and sheets and towels. That’s the wonder of the internet, as we are now in constant contact with them, sending emails, photos and videos of the property and our progress as we furnish it! In this particular case, I would definitely go for a neutral background. I will meet these clients for the first time when they come over to move in, so they can choose the finishing touches and
accent colours then. Far from leading a leisurely life, Gilly and I are busier than ever, but we are not complaining! The difference is that we can visit clients, or meet them at our warehouse and showroom in Buzanada, instead of being based in the shop. This allows us to offer a more personal service, which the clients seem to like, and also be more competitive on price, both on reupholstery work and new furniture. So if you are interested in a no-obligation estimate for any type of furniture or refurb, just give us a call on 922 789 729 or email info@ deconuevo.com for info and prices.

Who’s Doing The Dishes? is a brand new daytime series for ITV presented by Brian McFadden featuring a host of celebrity faces all trying their hand at cooking…or cleaning as the case may be. Each week, the programme follows four guests as they attend five dinner parties secretly hosted by different mystery celebrities in their own homes. Celebrity cooks include a host of stars from the world of TV, music and sport including; Louis Walsh, Claire Richards, Amy Childs, Jo Wood, Tina Malone, Wes Brown, Dane Bowers, Alison Hammond, Toyah Wilcox, Sian Lloyd, Vincent Simone, Cheryl Baker, Martin Offiah, Michelle Heaton, Gillian McKeith and Jo McElderry. As the diners tuck in and deliver their culinary verdicts, they must try to work out who’s cooking with the help of clues, which are hidden in the food as well as around the house. The guests don’t know each other, but they must work together to try and figure out at the end of the evening who their celebrity host is. If the team can successfully guess the name of the celebrity every night they can win a pot of cash to split between them and the celebrity will be putting their marigolds on. If they don’t, they’ll be doing the dishes!

The Bennett family run Britain’s number one retail jewellery business - without having a single shop. Their customers buy jewels having seen them on cable TV. They have a close relationship with the owners, because Steve and Sarah Bennett – their son, aunties, in-laws and cousins – are frequently on screen. The Bennetts broadcast to Europe and North America 24 hours a day, every day of the year, helped by a team of presenters who talk minerology for four hours at a time, and mix their sales patter with jokes and high jinks that have viewers dialing in at a furious rate - up to three thousand calls an hour, and everyone who gets through to the call centre wants to buy, making up to a quarter of a million pounds worth of business in just four hours. Part of the Bennett’s success lies in their business method. Purchasing direct from the mines and keeping costs low means viewers can buy a little, at bargain prices. Steve says: “If you go direct to the mine, you’re always going to get better value for your customers because you cut out all the middle men.” The other integral aspect of Steve’s business is the product – along with the usual diamonds, emeralds and rubies, the company sells a host of lesserknown gemstones, surrounding each with an alluring backstory. Steve says: “When we buy something we don’t actually need, what is it that we’re buying? Well, we’re buying something we get emotionally attached to - it’s the story. It’s understanding its place in history, which King and Queen wore that gemstone, how rare is it? What pulls at the heartstrings and makes us want to wear that gemstone?” Turnover is very healthy – around £100 million a year, but there’s a problem on the horizon. The Bennetts’ business is based on two natural resources, the first being minerals. The number one best-selling stone is a blue African gem called Tanzanite. It comes from just one outcrop in Tanzania, and the lode is running out. With ten million pounds a year at stake, Steve Bennett flies out to see if he can find a new supply himself. Steve says: “In the late 60s when they started mining, they were getting it off the top of the ground. Now they’re down to 800 metres. You can’t keep going deeper and deeper to the point where it’s not financially viable to mine it. It’ll still be around on the market for a few years, but then the prices will just go crazy.” The second integral resource for the Bennetts is human – their schedule relies on a large pool of presenters and the search for new talent never ends. The film begins as Christmas approaches, and the need for new blood is urgent. Can the Bennetts find a replacement for the blue beauty, and enough new presenters to keep the show on the road - or is it Game Over for Gems TV?

Our Zoo BBC1, 21.00 Frustrated by living with his wife and two daughters under his parents’ roof and tormented by his war trauma, George decides to change his life and put a bit of beauty back into the world. Haunted by memories of combat in the Great War, he now finds himself living with his wife and two daughters in his parents’ cramped home above the family grocery store. While delivering goods by the docks one day, he spots an unwanted squirrel monkey and a camel about to be put down in the quarantine bay. George can’t bear to let them suffer so takes them both home to his parents’ backyard instead - much to the family’s bewilderment. His family sees this as further evidence that he’s losing his mind, but George is busy making plans that will change their lives forever. On the way to an army reunion he comes across a rundown stately home, Oakfield, surrounded by acres of land, and he formulates the idea of buying it and building around it the first British zoo without bars. Against the odds he persuades the bank to lend him the money to buy Oakfield. But once George has persuaded his sceptical family to move into their new ramshackle house, the whole family faces the tough task of convincing the genteel and hard-to-please villagers to accept them as neighbours. George thinks it best to keep the zoo plans secret, which becomes difficult when Mortimer the monkey escapes into the village.

The Gypsy Matchmaker Channel 4, 22:00
As many as 250,000 Roma Gypsies now live in the UK, where marriage under the age of 16 is illegal - but for some fiercely traditional Roma families, the custom of arranging unlawful marriages for children is still very much alive. This film follows two families living in Britain who have recently immigrated from Hungary and Romania but have not adjusted their behaviour to fit with the laws of this country. This is an insider view of a community living at odds with the system, according to a traditional Gypsy code known as ‘Pachiv’: a culture where the head of the family must always be obeyed, and where childhood ends in the early teens.

Chasing Shadows ITV1, 21.00 Chasing Shadows is a thrilling, new four-part drama, which focuses on the work of a missing persons field unit charged with tracking down serial killers who prey on impressionable and vulnerable people. Reece Shearsmith (The Widower, Psychoville, The League of Gentleman) will play DS Sean Stone and his partner, Ruth Hattersley is played by Alex Kingston (Marchlands, Arrow, Upstairs Downstairs) whilst Noel Clarke (Star Trek Into Darkness, Doctor Who) takes on the role of DI Prior. On the face of it Sean is intense, socially awkward and a misfit. Get to know him and you realise he’s a man on a mission even if it leads him to self destruction and his eccentric manner frequently lands him in hot water. He’s obsessed with deciphering codes and uncovering patterns of behaviour particularly in relation to those most at risk, vulnerable missing persons. Ruth, on the other hand, is a stabilising influence. Maternal, but not mumsy, she’s an analyst from the Missing Persons Bureau tasked to work alongside Sean. In effect his bosses have sidelined him and she is his lifeline. Sean refuses to be tethered to Ruth, but eventually learns that he and Ruth make an awesome team. She has the ability to connect with people and has the expertise to trace missing persons. He is socially awkward and struggles to communicate; yet their strengths strike the perfect balance. On paper. In reality, it is a rocky partnership. After criticizing police procedure in the aftermath of the eventual capture of a serial killer, DI Sean Stone is seconded to the Missing Persons Bureau, assigned to a new ‘unit’ with MPB analyst Ruth Hattersley. In reality, Sean’s new assignment is made with the intention of keeping him out of the way. But when Sean comes across the case of a missing 16 year old girl, Taylor, he’s soon back out in the field.

Castles In The Sky BBC2, 21.00
Castles in the Sky is the previously untold story of the fight to invent Radar by Scotsman Robert Watson Watt (Eddie Izzard) and a team of unproven and unknown British scientists. The factual drama conveys the genuine human drama - of determination and genius versus establishment prejudice - behind the invention which was to prove decisive in the Battle of Britain. Watson Watt’s ambition was initially dismissed by the Oxbridge-dominated establishment including Winston Churchill as “Castles in the Sky” while he and his fellow scientists, who were his meteorologist colleagues, were disregarded as a bunch of “weather men” from provincial universities. Yet they continued to strive to achieve their dreams against all odds, to the detriment of their personal lives and at the cost of some of their marriages. Izzard comments: “I feel very privileged to be playing the role of Robert Watson Watt. Hopefully our production will allow him, along with Skip Wilkins and their team to finally take their places in the pantheon of British greats of World War Two, as the inventors of Radar. Without Radar the Nazis would probably have been able to invade and occupy our country. So the future of the free world may well have been saved by these unlikely men and their brilliant work leading up to the Battle of Britain. Their names are not famous - that is a mistake Britain must rectify. This is their story.” Producer Simon Wheeler explains why he decided to put the film together: “The time is right for a contemporary approach to this rich and underreported vein of British history – it’s not like other war stories - if anything it’s more akin to a combination of The Social Network and Chariots Of Fire than The Dambusters or Reach For The Skies. It’s an important story about a bunch of men who realised that their seemingly crackpot ideas and incredibly hard work could save the nation – and its poignancy and meaning still resonate today.”

FIRSTLY, I would like to start the gardening page with a little more on papaya which I featured last week
Although Papaya do like a lot of water, they are susceptible to their roots rotting, so use your discretion when watering, and do so if they need it. If it has been a cooler day, then maybe ease up on the watering a little. When the fruits first appear and swell, they are green. We are used to seeing them orange and ripe, but you can eat the green, unripe papaya, turning them into fantastic Thai-style curry. It takes about 10 months for your plant to bear fruit, but it will fruit any time of the year - as long as the conditions are right. I guess that means we can all start sowing them now, or next week - or even next month. Brilliant! Papaya can grow really tall and, obviously, if they have been planted in an open, sunny site, they will not reach for light. So they will take longer to reach an awkward size for harvesting. As the plant or the tree gets older, the fruit will deteriorate, so always bear this in mind and

Papaya’s so sweet! Brilliant Basil herb just so easy to grow
start your next one well before the older one gives up. These plants love chicken manure, which might explain why the display down at the garden in front of the restaurant pictured has the chicken ornaments - not just as a symbol of rural Spain but as a symbol of their relationship with the plant. We are so disconnected from the relationship between all the integral parts of a working garden - or an edible one - if living out of rural Spain.
Not that I am suggesting you get some chickens, although I think that would be nice. But always think about what natural feeds are available, probably free of charge, to feed your plants. Well, I hope I have inspired you to sow some papaya seeds. I am certainly going to give it another go. Also, always look around for inspiration for your own garden space because you can find it in the most unexpected places.
FOR this week, I have to talk about Basil, which is such an amazing herb and loved by most people. It is fresh and robust and so easy to grow here in the Canaries. The common basil (Ocimum basilicum), is the one I refer to, but there are lots of basil growing in different regions of the world and have their own name. The way I grow basil is by sowing seeds. I always gather the seeds from my existing plants so that I have a regular succession of plants. It is best if eaten when fresh and not when it has gone too woody. You can buy seeds and also plants, so it really
is your choice how you start your basil plants in your garden. I like to start by sprinkling a few seeds on the top of small pots filled with compost and then just let them fight for room. This gives you a neat clump, which I then transplant out into the garden where they can really spread out. They like to be watered regularly, but they are not greedy feeders and really can withstand a bit of neglect. They derive from the Lamiaceae family, which is the same family as the mints. Soon, you will have plants with large, meaty leaves on for harvest. You can snip
or tear bunches from the main plant, and then use in cooking. Basil makes a superb companion plant to your tomatoes, not just in the garden but also on the plate, with some mozzarella cheese mmm! Soon enough, your little basil plants will start to sprout tall stalks of white, fluffy flowers which turn into the seeds for your next sowing. I have found that I can sow basil at any time of the year - and it will grow. It likes to be in a sunny spot but will also tolerate a little shade, so it really is very easy to develop. Basil always conjures up images of Italian, al fresco dining, but it actually originates from India. Although the other basils such as Thai Basil are different, they are fundamentally the same, so you can use Ocimum basilicum with your oriental dishes. Incorporating the basil and the green papaya, you can make a pretty authentic Thai Green Curry - see the recipe below.
Sow it … grow it … taste it!
Thai Green Curry
Ingredients *2lbs/6 cups green papaya (unripe) vegetable oil *1 small onion *Chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1-2 chilli peppers (optional) *1 tbsp mild curry powder *1 can coconut milk *Salt “Fresh basil leaves
Method *Holding the papaya on the narrow end, slice off the skin (be sure to leave a bit at the top unpeeled, so you can grip it without slipping) *Slice the papaya in half and scoop out the seeds *Cut it into cubes *In a large pan over medium heat, add the
oil, onion garlic and - if using - the chilli *Cook until the onions are soft *Add curry powder, papaya, coconut milk, and salt *Cover and simmer until the papaya is tender. Serve with rice and break some basil leaves on to the top of the curry, et voilà!

By Val Sainsbury EXPERTS are warning of a huge rise in the number of children with diabetes - because their mothers developed the condition during pregnancy.
They claim the “future will be filled” with affected children, after a study showed babies exposed to the condition in the womb are six times more likely to develop diabetes or prediabetes than those not exposed.
29th August 2014 - 4th September 2014
Kids in danger of diabetes
Doctors say gestational diabetes is on the increase, driven partly by obesity as well as the rise in older mothers, who are more prone to developing the condition while pregnant. The warning comes after a charity report earlier this year found one in seven UK hospital beds is currently occupied by someone with diabetes, pushing the NHS bill for treating it to a record £10billion a year. It is known that babies whose mothers develop gestational diabetes may have problems balancing blood-
sugar levels in early life, but US research has quantified the risk. It looked at 255 obese children with a normal glucose tolerance, who were selected for the study at around the age of 12. All were investigated for exposure to gestational diabetes in the womb and had a glucose tolerance test - used to diagnose diabetes - which was repeated three years later. Scientists found 210 children (82%) had not been exposed to gestational diabetes, while 45 (18%) had. Just 9% of those whose mothers did
not have the condition developed type 2 diabetes themselves, or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), a prediabetic condition. However, 31% of children whose mothers had gestational diabetes went on to develop either prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, indicating an increased risk of nearly sixfold. Study leader Dr Sonia Caprio, from the Yale School of Medicine, said: “Exposure to gestational diabetes was the most significant predictor of developing IGT or type 2 diabetes, with an increased risk of almost six times for
those children exposed in the womb.” A report published in Diabetologia, the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, called the results “alarming”. It said the affected group of children showed a reduction in beta cell function - the cells that produce insulin. They also displayed a lower insulin sensitivity, which is linked with type 2 diabetes. The study says: “Obese-normal, glucose-tolerant children of gestational diabetes mothers have pre-existing defects in beta cell function.
“This is a strong risk factor for these children to develop prediabetes or diabetes. “The ever-growing number of women with gestational diabetes suggests the future will be filled with children with early diabetes at a rate that far exceeds the current prevalence.” Around 15% of British mothers are obese when expecting a child - up from 7% 20 years ago. Doctors have previously warned the obesity epidemic among women could jeopardise the health of the next generation.
Health body says: Ban sale of e-ciggies to kids THE World Health Organisation (WHO) is calling for a ban on the use of e-cigarettes indoors, and that sales to children should stop. In a report, the health body says there should be no claims that the devices can help people quit smoking - until there is evidence to support this. WHO experts warn the products might pose a threat to adolescents and the foetuses of pregnant women. And they urge restrictions to be placed on flavours attractive to children. According to the WHO, legal steps should be taken to end the use of e-cigarettes indoors - both in public spaces and in work places. The health experts
say fruit, candy or alcoholic-drink style flavours should also be banned, while the sales of electronic cigarettes from vending machines should be heavily restricted. They call for a ban on advertisements which encourage children and non-smokers to use the devices. And the WHO report warns that exhaled eciggie vapour could increase the background
air levels of some toxicants and nicotine. The team says while e-cigarettes are likely to be less harmful than traditional cigarettes, they may pose threats to adolescents and the foetuses of pregnant women who use these devices. But some researchers suggest tough regulations may prevent smokers having access to products that are potentially less harmful
than conventional cigarettes. A British American Tobacco company spokesman said: “We have always said that given nicotine is addictive, minimum age laws of 18 for the sale of e-cigarettes should be introduced. “However, if overly-restrictive regulations are introduced hampering innovation or adult usage, this could simply stifle the growth of new products and prevent smokers from being aware of and having access to them - this can only be bad thing for public health.” Hazel Cheeseman, from the charity Action on Smoking and Health, said there was no evidence of any harm to bystanders, and she warned that regulation needed to be pro-
portionate. She added: “Smoking kills 100,000 people in the UK alone. Smokers who switch to using electronic cigarettes in whole or in part are likely to reduce their health risks substantially. “Although we cannot be sure that electronic cigarettes are completely safe, as the WHO acknowledges, they are considerably less harmful than smoking tobacco. “And research suggests that they are already helping smokers to quit.” A UK Department of Health spokeswoman said: “More and more people are using e-cigarettes, and we want to make sure they are properly regulated so we can be sure of their safety. “We have already set
out our intention to change the law to ban the sale of e-cigarettes to children under 18. “The UK has an existing licensing system for higher-strength products, and those that claim to help people quit. “We are also bringing in new European rules to cover lower-strength products, which will ban most advertising, limit nicotine levels and set standards for ingredients, labelling and packaging.” The WHO’s recommendations were published ahead of a meeting involving all countries which have signed up to an international convention on tobacco control. New global guidelines could be agreed during the October meeting.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
HIGH street supermarkets have been diversifying in what they stock on their shelves for a few years.
I HOPE my clients really do think outside the box when they are in the salon … that they are open to suggestion and honest opinion. I recently cut a client’s hair, and she had not changed her style since the Eighties. She was in her late 40s but looked younger, and had short but a little dated hair. She took some convincing to think about her hair from a different angle. But after a while, and some honest but fair advice, she let me go for it. It wasn’t a drastic change. She had short hair, but I convinced her to grow part of it to bring it right up to date, yet still retain the shortness she wanted. So many times I hear: “Right, this is what I want”. Then, after a pause: “What do I want?” Most clients don’t know what they’re after and want us stylists to be honest and guide them in the right direction. It’s as though I worked in a clothes shop and you came out of the changing rooms in … well, let’s just say something not too flattering. What do I say? “Yes madam, you look gorgeous,” because I’m just thinking about the sale. Or do I be honest and suggest something more flattering? You want an honest answer, of course. Some people don’t want to hear the truth because it shatters their illu-
sions of what they think is staring back at them in the mirror. If you have a style that’s not doing you any favours, you should have enough confidence to trust your stylist when you ask: “What do you think of my style/ colour, etc?” Most of us professionals are in this business because we love the work we do, and not just to make money, because there are far easier ways of lining our pockets. If you can’t get an honest answer from your stylists, think again why you’re actually sat in their chair. Really, you shouldn’t even have to ask. They should have one motive in mind when you’re having your hair done and that’s what’s best for you and your image. In the world of hairdressing, less is more. The easier your hair is to style and maintain, the better it is for you. Your stylist takes the credit, and you leave the salon one happy customer. There’s no point hoping that what you had
Lidl steps into clothing market
You can walk into Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and ASDA and feed yourself, get insured, buy a mobile phone and clothe yourself all under one roof. The idea is to bring you a one-stop shop. Clothing, in particular, has been seen as a profitable market because of its affordability. Therefore, it is no surprise that Lidl is now developing its own clothing range. The discount retailer has launched a new women’s range, with leather jackets starting from £14.99. The affordable range will compete with the major supermarkets. Lidl have previously sold clothes, but underwear and children’s wear only. The women’s collection, which will be instore next week, is for sizes 10 to 18, and also includes footwear. The 600 Lidl stores will stock the new range, with prices starting at £5.99 - and the highestpriced item being the leather jacket. The group expects the stock to sell out within the first week, with the same philosophy as their grocery range of “while stocks last”.
The company is not just stopping at women’s wear either, because they plan to launch men’s fashion at the start of November. So what is it that we all love so much about affordable clothing? The Daily Mail’s Kate Battersby has reviewed the new range and sees it as great to mix-andmatch, and to be “used as basics at an extraordinary price”. I don’t think Lidl will be worrying Primark the leading high street affordability store - but it seems to have been clever with the range it has produced, with your basic white shirts,
skinny jeans and denim skirts. The range is designed to be part of the basics for any wardrobe. which every woman needs. Lidl, as well as Aldi, has taken the food market by storm in recent years, and the percentage of the market share is everincreasing. With the firm branching out into other departments, the group wants to take on the big five. But the question is: would you be tempted to swop high street shops for a grocery shop? As they say, every Lidl helps!
three years ago is still doing you justice today. Move with the times, not only cut-wise but colour-wise, too. If you are stuck in a hair rut, then book a consultation. That’s when we don’t even touch your hair because it’s your time to tell us what you think, and for us to guide you through it. Maybe what you think you want really isn’t what you should have. Maybe there’s a better idea that you have not even thought about. Your stylist should be your honest answer, even if the answer isn’t what you would like to hear. Being direct is often the best approach. If what you’re asking for is going to damage your hair, then we will tell you. If it’s going to add on 20 years to you, then we will let you know. None of this advice is done with bad intention. It’s just that we want you to leave the salon with a smile on your face … and not egg.

By Monica Dyson IT has certainly been a great year or so for amazing sporting events. But one part of the action was missing: where have all the streakers gone?
Everyone loves a streaker. They certainly brighten up sporting events and are really considered just a bit of fun … for most people, that is. It’s actually illegal in the UK, but it never stopped naked exhibitionists from stripping off in public and exposing themselves in front of thousands of people. Possibly, the fact that the spoilsport TV cameras quickly turn away from the bare-faced action, has reduced the number of people doing it; or perhaps, for the same reason, they do still exist but we don’t see them. There is also a website for lovers of streaking (why does that not surprise me?) and social forums for like-minded
Bare facts about
streakers!
streakers wanting to socialise with others! A sort of Bare Facebook? Streaking is a relatively new phenomenon, unless you include Lady Godiva. It seems to have started in the 1970s, when students in the US decided that it added a little something to protests and demonstrations. It soon caught on in Britain with streakers graduating to “the fun streak” at sporting events and student parties. The first major public streak in England was at Lords Cricket Ground in 1975, when a young man called Michael Angelo leapt over a set of stumps wearing nothing but a smile. Since then, there have been many recorded and, I’m sure, unrecorded streaks at public events. And the activity certainly moved on from students to just about anyone. Some streakers achieved not only notoriety but made a fair bit of money from it, like Erica Roe. She ran topless on to the pitch at Twickenham in 1982,
when England’s rugby team were playing Australia. The iconic images of the time included one of a policeman escorting her off the rugby pitch holding his helmet over her ample, 40in bosom. She later made around £8,000 from TV appearances and magazine articles, before becoming respectable and, eventually, moving to Portugal with her husband and children to take up organic farming! One of the most prolific streamers of all time, Mark Roberts, made two appearances in my home town of Sheffield at the Crucible’s World Snooker Championship - once in 2004, when Graham Dott was playing Ronnie O’Sullivan, and again in 2008, when Ali Carter was playing against O’Sullivan. His streaking career totalling 519, included Miss World pageants, Crufts, running of the bulls in Pamplona (not a good idea!), Super bowl at Houston, Texas, in Barcelona during the Barcelona and Real Madrid game, Mr Universe,
Accion del Sol news THIS gorgeous cocker spaniel was brought into the refuge last week from the streets of Granadilla.
He was in a really bad condition, full of ticks and fleas, and with a serious eye infection. His microchip was registered to an Arona address according to zoocams database, but neighbours reported that the owners had moved to Salamanca, leaving the poor dog to fend for himself on the streets. Now, though, he is receiving full medical care and is on the long road to recovery. And after the legal 21 days, he will be looking for a new home. If you feel you could offer this sweet dog a loving environment,

and at Royal Ascot. He is banned from every UK football ground. One of his most famous naked exploits came in 1995 when he leapt on to Fred Talbot’s floating weather map on the TV’s This Morning programme. Although spending his life on unemployment benefits, having only ever had one job – from which he was sacked - he seems to have existed on hand-outs from friends, despite having three children to support. Last year, he bowed to pressure from them and decided to hang up his boots, often the only thing he ever wore! He was the subject of a 2013 Channel 4 and hopes to bring out his autobiography! Although having been taken into custody over 30 times for brief periods, without having received any “stiff” sentences, he has not equalled the six years spent inside prison of Stephen Gough, known as “The Naked Rambler”, who walked the length and breadth of England in the nude.
Mark Roberts says that his streaking has had entertainment value, whereas Stephen Gough was an exhibitionist who caused offence to people! It seems that her Majesty was not amused when Geordie Brynn Reed streaked in front of her Rolls Royce on her Jubilee visit to Newcastle in 2002. He had decided it would be something exciting to tell his grandchildren about when they were older, which is debatable. And it didn’t do him any good when he lost his job as a result of it. Good job it wasn’t his head! Back in Sheffield Tony Agana, who played for Sheffield United between 1988 and 1991, was pleasantly surprised when sitting on the bench to find that a young lady streaker lunged to kiss him before being escorted off the field. It seems that she even rang the club afterwards to send her apologies, hoping she hadn’t embarrassed him too much!
There has, apparently, been the occasional streaker at Sheffield football matches over the years. Again, at Sheffield United’s ground in the early 1990s, a young woman decided to publicise her new kissogram business. And with her proud father holding her clothes, she leapt on to the pitch. She did, rumour has it, attract the attention of a certain Blades player who went on to find fame and fortune as a Hollywood actor and, allegedly, had a brief liaison with him. Making her father doubly proud! But by and large, given the British weather, it would seem that fewer people are indulging in streaking, although at one time it was so prevalent during Test matches that former Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds wrote a book called The Athletes Guide to Bringing Down Streakers. Sorry to all cricket lovers, but in my opinion, streakers would certainly liven up the tedium that comes with that particular sport!

We’re running out of whiskey … or are we? THE world is facing a whiskey shortage as the soaring demand for fine bourbons outstrips supply, according to Buffalo race, one of America’s oldest distilleries.
The effects are just starting to hit the mar-
ket, because the whiskey-aging process can take decades, and simply cannot adapt to a demand surge. Or can it? Jack Daniel’s, another famous American brand, may have already come to the rescue. It is offering whiskey-drinkers the chance to buy an entire barrel of the stuff. That’s equal to between 240-260 bottles of
its Single Barrel brand. The barrel costs around £13,500 (depending on the yield) and is delivered sanded, varnished and personalised. Investors will receive an experience “curated solely for them”, including a one-on-one tasting of different barrels so buyers can find the perfect whiskey, which will be unlike any other in the world.
It’s a hefty price to pay but, after all, as Buffalo Trace warns, the world is running out of whisky. Any connoisseurs who have £13,500 lying around to spend entirely on whiskey will be honoured with a plaque that will sit proudly on the Wall of Fame in the Jack Daniel’s distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee.
But Buffalo Trace said in a press release: “Despite the increase in distillation over the past few years, bourbon demand still outpaces supply, “The overall bourbon category is experiencing 5% growth, but premium brands are up nearly 20% from last year. “Bourbon must be matured in new oak
barrels and Buffalo Trace ages many of its barrels for 8-10 years, and some over two decades. That’s a long time to wait for a bottle of bourbon. “Not to mention, with the amount of bourbon lost to evaporation over time, barrels are half empty after 10 years. The increase in sales, coupled with the aging process and evaporation loss, leads to a shortage with no end in sight.” The problem, says the company, is being exacerbated by a shortage of wood used to create whiskey barrels, so you better get stocking up now. Meanwhile, Jack Daniel’s celebrates its bond with Frank Sinatra, a keen JD drinker, with a cocktail at Selfridge’s, a punch at The London Edition hotel and a free whiskey on the rocks for guests at The Savoy, all made using its special edition Sinatra Select whiskey.

X-factor lifts Lada By Jav RUSSIAN manufacturer Lada have launched two new models and a new racecar at its home Moscow Motor Show, which is taking place now.
It is a bold bid by the company to reinvent themselves as a maker of stylish, desirable, high-quality cars. Their aim is to appeal not just to their loyal domestic buyers but also, eventually, to those further afield. At the show, they are presenting the X-Ray compact SUV and the Vesta compact saloon, both thinly-veiled looks at new families of models which will go on sale in a year. There is also a World Touring Car Championship version of the Vesta saloon, which will go racing next year, with British drivers Rob Huff and James Thompson behind the wheel, as well as Russian Mikhail Kozlovskiy. All this has been made possible by a takeover of Lada’s parent firm Avtovaz by Renault-Nissan. They have gradually been increasing their ownership to own 67.1% of a holding company who control 74.5% of Avtovaz. Renault acquired an initial 25% stake in 2008 for £600m. The distinctive new design direction, over-
seen by British design director Steve Mattin, is the first phase of this reinvention which is, in part, backed up by proven Renault-Nissansourced platforms and likely powertrains. Up first in the Lada reinvention is the Vesta, a 4.4-metre B-segment saloon, which will replace the Priora in Lada’s line-up and is likely to become their second best-seller after the smaller 4.2-metre-long Granta saloon when it goes on sale in September 2015. It is based on a new, modular platform from which several variants
of the Vesta and other models are likely to be spawned. The production car will look almost identical to the four-door concept at Moscow, save for some detail in the headlights and slightly narrower wings. The Vesta will be seen first, though, in WTCC racer form, when the 2015 season starts next spring. Unusually, the Lada road-car design team have worked with the Lada Sport design. And Mattin, who gave top weekly magazine Autocar an exclusive preview of the new La-
das before the Moscow show, believes the Vesta’s layout and proportions lend themselves to a competitive racer far better than the Granta. A Lada Sport-fettled version of the Vesta saloon is already being mooted to link further the road and race programmes. The final car in the trio is the second X-Ray concept. It is closely related to the Dacia Sandero Stepway under the skin - but with a bespoke Lada look inside and out. The new five-door model, clearly inspired by the original three-
door X-Ray concept, is still just that, officially! But it’s actually giving us a much closer look at the production car that’s set to hit the showrooms in early 2016. A family of X-Ray vehicles is also planned. Mattin says it is not quite as close to production as the Vesta, but “every detail has production relevance”. It is another potential big seller for Lada, as the market is also subject to the global boom of popularity in compact SUVs. That front face is the most eye-catching part of Lada’s reinvention. Mattin studied rivals and wanted to do something completely different from the horizontal front-ends and trapezoidal and single-frame front grilles currently dominating the industry. He settled on the “X” theme, a bold treatment that connects the headlights, front grille, lower air intake and front fogs. The angle and size of the X can be changed for different models to give it a different treatment, but maintaining the new strategic look. “It’s simple and bold,” says Mattin, “X is a
strong letter.” The X theme can be seen all over the newlook Ladas. Study the new cars in their sleek profiles, and another X is spelled out in the bodywork - something Mattin describes as “clean and simple, really emphasising the wheels”. There’s another X in the rear-light graphics, and the side X runs around the rear-light clusters to create another X. “Everywhere you look you see an X,” says Mattin, something that even applies inside, where the plusher, more European-like cabins with large touch-screens and higher-quality materials are also furnished with Lada’s new favourite letter on the seat fabrics, among other locations.” The new-found boldness and confidence is also reflected in the Lada name being spelled out across the back of the new cars, and a more modernlooking, bigger badge created for the brand as well. After the Vesta and XRay, the new look and brand identity will be rolled out across the rest of the range.

All we are saying - is give us a goal!
I REMEMBER 20th April quite well. It was the end of a very long week of 40th birthday celebrations.
And in Santa Cruz, Tenerife launched a thrilling comeback against Numancia. Aridane, Juanjo and then a rare Quique goal gave Tenerife a well-deserved 3-2 win to launch them into fourth place in the table. Not only have Tenerife lost every competitive match since, they haven’t hit the net since Quique’s fine finish. On Sunday, they were the better side for most of the match in Ponferradina. The players may be a little different, the kit looks the same and, unfortunately, so is the luck in front of goal. The hosts’ winner was their only real effort on target, and it wasn’t really that. Youtube is your friend if you want to see just how big a howler Jacobo made of it. Our new No.1 looked a little short of confidence - and it cost us a point. Position
It’s very early days, and only a fool would read a season into one performance. But it has been a worrying week. New striker Diego Ifran is out for a month. He has well-documented knee problems, and he felt his right knee early in the second half.
He should be back for the derby match with Las Palmas, but, unless we sign a striker in the next few days, it will be a long five matches without him. There was a strange look to the Tenerife team, with Javi Moyano playing left-back and

Raul Camara slotting in on the right. Last season they were the other way around, and while I think Moyano is a fine right-back, I’ve never ever seen him use his left. In the modern game, it shouldn’t really matter. A full-back is a fullback. When I was a pup, I would often fill in at left-back even though I am very right-footed. But manager Alvaro Cervera says that as things stand, Moyano is now first choice at leftback. Hmmmm. Ayose Diaz is still under contract and did little wrong for me last year. He has been told he can leave, but Cervera, who is in total control of such matters, says he is happy for him to stay and will use him. Then there is the curious case of Juan Carlos Garcia. The Honduras World Cup player was signed as a left-back, but it now turns out he is an out-and-out centre-half! Who signed this deal off, and how was this allowed to happen? So Tenerife are busy trying to sign another left-sided defender be-
fore the transfer window shuts. The name being whispered is Igor Arnaez (another one from Athletic Bilbao). And with no real back-up to Ifran, they also need another striker. This week, Tenerife have worked hard to try to bring back former favourite Alejandro Alfaro. His partnership with Nino was the foundation of the last promotion to La Liga. He’s had a few disappointing seasons at Mallorca and looked set for a move to Panathinaikos. But concerns over an old knee injury scuppered that, and he is a free agent. Huelva-born Alfaro watched home side Recreativo draw 0-0 with Real Zaragoza on Saturday. Both sides want him as well. Recreativo offered him a four-year deal worth 200,000 euros a season, while Zaragoza’s offer was more money, but a two-year deal. Osasuna are also keen (where he would link up with Nino again), but it seemed he is angling for a return here. Then as we go to press it’s revealed he has signed for Valladolid! So it’s back
to the drawing board with the clock ticking. What is interesting in this striker search is that the previously mentioned Nino and ex-Brighton striker David Rodriguez were the top targets for Tenerife in the summer. Nino stayed at Osasuna, while Rodriguez pitched up at big-spending Alcorcon. They both scored twice last weekend! To finish the strange transfer conundrum, with Juan Carlos Garcia now a centre-back, the last thing we need is another centre-back. But on Tuesday, Tenerife honoured a deal for Real Murcia’s Hugo Alvarez who is a? Yep you guessed it. Tomorrow night (Saturday), the Heliodoro sees its first action of the new season. The 10pm kick-off with Albacete should finally see Vitolo pulling on the jersey. He missed the opening match because of red tape. And despite him having signed two months ago, his international clearance didn’t come through until yesterday! Only in Spain!

136 is a Lofty check-out!
LOFTY, currently plying his trade at Marilyns in Silencio, has been a Darts League stalwart for many a season. And a thoroughly nice chap he is, too!
And nice to see his name up in lights after he claimed Division 2’s highest finish with a stunning 136. We won’t mention that his team lost to Palms Sports Bar, despite team-mate Steve hitting his first 180! Up at the top, Chipeque Chippers fell under the commentator’s curse as they lost
at The Palms. I really must stop predicting favourites – I’ll leave that to Adi Benson! That result provided
PRemier division ResultS
the chance for Waterfall Warriors to rise to the summit. But they threw it in the bin as they could only draw
with a plucky Phoenix Flights outfit. Elsewhere, The Rebels took the trebles to claim a win over The Bar, while the Hunters did likewise to beat the Playgirls. After last week’s first defeat, Division 1 leaders Emerald Shamrocks got back to winning ways with a 7-1 thrashing of Clouseaus. They now hold a fivepoint advantage after Gaffers A were held to a draw with Picasso’s. Gaffers’ Ramon equalled the highest check-out with a cool 113. Another drawn match came at Chipeque, who faced Naughty Nautas. The result will be of no
consequence to Nauta lady Sue, who hit her first-ever maximum. Go girl! Also on the 180 trail was Emerald Lounge skipper Daz, whose first of the campaign came during a 6-2 home loss against Ourplace Playboys. The only other match in this section saw Trap Door taking five points from Sundowners. After a couple of dodgy results recently, Target Army shot back into second spot in the Premier League, courtesy of an 8-0 whitewashing of Bar 180 B. Maximums from Steve and Bryn helped them along the way. However, Bar 180 A
still look to be favourites (sorry guys). Their 6-2 victory over La Caña Pirates included an eighth maximum for Tom. Vikings Ensecan’s home record is pretty decent, and they proved that by holding The Pub to a 4-4 draw. And they have a pretty decent player in Rob, who hit his second 180 during the match. Finally, they keep turning up, and they keep plugging away. Yes, the Inkspots crew. But they don’t complain … they just get on with it. And they took just the one point at Phoenix Bar. They are a credit to the league.

Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League IF you think it’s hard being a Premier League club manager, you want to try being an Oasis Fm Fantasy League manager.
With a raft of injuries and some of the smaller clubs outperforming the bigger clubs, picking a team has proved difficult. And I notice there are a lot of transfers be-
ing made, especially by the more experienced fantasy managers as they try to get the right balance for their team - some even sacrificing points for extra transfers! It’s got the makings of a great season. The point-scoring Team of the Week, in terms of player scores, was dominated by Spurs, who contributed three players. The rest of the team consisted of one player each from,
Villa, Chelsea, Stoke, Newcastle, Man Utd, West Ham, Swansea and Man City. In the league, the early leader is Nick Abbott, a school friend of our Editor, nonetheless, with his team the Boomtown Rabz. He has had a couple of decent weeks and has amassed 122 points, but it is a long season. Team of the Week goes to Deborah Johnston and The Black Dragons with an outstanding 82
points; she has already been giving one of the Oasis DJs a ribbing over this (mentioning no names Adi). She is the second female to be leading points-scorer after Lesley Bradley. But Lesley had an average weekend and now drops to eighth. In the battle at Oasis FM towers, sales manager John Zammit is the early leader, in his rookie season, closely followed by Chris Elkington. Ro-
scoe has made his traditional slow start, but he is ahead of Maggie Lennard. And at the
back of the pack, limping along, is Adi Benson who brings up the rear. Again!

Big guns make fast start THE Direct Telecom Pool League is now back up and running, with lots of new faces.
The summer break has seen a raft of players changing sides, and several new teams joining the ranks. Season- on- season, the overall playing standard has got higher and higher, and this year’s league will be the most competitive yet. In Division One, it was business as usual for last season’s league champions, Tenerife Hammers A, who started their defence with a home game against Terrace Bar A. The Spoon Squad played some good pool on the night, but just didn’t get the rub of the green. Hammers came away 10-2 winners but even by their own admission, the score flattered them and the match was a lot closer than it seems. Gaffers A, who finished runners-up, had a tricky opening match against Inn the Pink A and found themselves up against it at 3-1 down. They always had another gear to move into, though and, after taking the next four frames, they saw the game out to record their first win of the season. Down in Los Abrigos, the Phoenix Potters took on league new boys Atmosphere 13 (insert Russ Abbott gag here). The first few games were a cagey affair, but the OAPs then showed their experience to take four on the bounce, giving them a solid victory. Les was star man on the night with three wins from three. The other Phoenix team also opened their
campaign with three points, just sneaking past Exiles B, another top-flight newcomer. Elsewhere, new-look Treehouse A and Exiles A started with wins and, in an early derby game, Palms A took on Palms B. The A team were ahead early on but it turned into a cagey affair. But the A team, with new signing Penguin, showed their class as they got over the line 7-5. Unusually, there was only one opening week draw in the top division. Terrace B finished strongly last season and rightly took their place in Division One. They opened the action last Sunday afternoon, taking on Waterfall A. The Terrace were always competitive but were 6-4 down. However, they rallied well and captain Fin took the final frame to end the match 6-6 for a share of the points. Division Two is going to be interesting as we welcome several new teams, but taking top spot this week are Toscales Wildcards. They opened their campaign with a derby game against Toscales

They will be a difficult team to beat in this division, as they look to bounce straight back up. Inkspots have also put down a marker for their own promotion hopes. They travelled to Treehouse B, who have experience in this division. But Inkspots never looked troubled
and picked up their first three points. Two of the other new teams locked horns on opening night, with Sporting Jester A travelling down to Golf del Sur to take on Waterfall Jokers. In a contest full of laughs, the Jesters knocked the smile off the face of the Jokers and took the victory. They could be a dark horse this season.

The other new league team, Sporting Jester B, started with a tricky home game against Picasso’s A. They put up a great fight and certainly made life difficult for the more experienced team. But they eventually ran out of steam as Picasso’s welcomed the points. Gaffers B and Inn the Pink B, who faced off on Tuesday, should finish in the top half. They

could not be separated, though, eventually sharing the points. In the remaining fixtures Bluebell, another team with promotion aspirations, scraped past Tenerife Pool Teams, who have become a real family team, with Nick, Lorraine and Harley all featuring. Lorraine even pulling off a win in her first-ever game! The final fixture saw another close match between Next Door and Dreamers B. The home team celebrated the advantage of playing on their own table with an opening-night win to get their season off to a good start. And the traditional pre-season money competition was another entertaining affair at Palms Bar. Most of the top players were involved as they chased the 500-euro fund. Jambo battled through to take the 200-euro first prize. In the final, he beat Palms B’s Graham, who pocketed 100 euros. Big thanks to the sponsors, Tenerife Pool Tables.

Premier League preview By Adi Benson IT would seem, based on last week’s results, that the Barclays Premier League will be even more closely fought this season - and even more difficult to predict (well for me, anyway).
We are fast-approaching the transfer window closure, and one or two teams look short, so I expect some lastminute panic buying. Last week I lost the first Beat Benson challenge to Steve ‘Thorpey’ Schofield by just one point, but I’m confident of victory this week. My challenger is Michael Morrison, so let battle commence!
Burnley v Man Utd Burnley have not had a great start to their league campaign and may have been fearful of this fixture. But they will realise that this is an excellent time to play United especially at home. They gave a decent account of themselves against Chelsea but struggled against Swansea, and those are the games from which they need to take points. It’s obvious that United need defenders if they are to play to the style Van Gaal prefers, so what do they do? They pay just shy of £60m for an attacking player! They will be a wounded animal this weekend after being embarrassed by lowly MK Dons in the League Cup, so Burnley will
have to be on their toes. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Home win Man City v Stoke City are League champions and have started the season with two wins out of two, looking especially impressive against Liverpool. Jovetic struggled for them last season, but he looks a different player this year and the squad looks so strong, with two or three internationals for each position. Stoke had been touted to do good things this season, but have managed just a point from the first two games. A new attacking style was expected, but if it is to materialise, it will take time. I can’t see a relegation battle coming up for them because they will beat teams around them and they are capable of a shock. But not this time. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Away win Newcastle v C Palace The Magpies looked good in their first game against Man City, but last week they struggled to get going and looked a little toothless in attack. Pardew has bought in some good new recruits and, once they gel, I think they will be a decent, difficult team to beat. Home form is going to be key for them this season. Colin is back in management at Palace and it’s hardly a longterm move to bring back Neil Warnock. He’s not pulled up too many trees over the last decade and it’s a strange appointment after his QPR stint. Prediction: Home win
Beat Benson: Home win QPR v Sunderland A thumping by Spurs last time out led to speculation that Redknapp’s job was not safe. But since then he has been offered an extended contract. Rangers have strengthened in defence, but the players brought in have not yet clicked. This needs to happen quickly before they start to lose real ground over their rivals. Sunderland have started with two draws so they remain unbeaten - and scored a superb point against Man Utd. They are looking to improve on last season and still have irons in the fire with regards to potential new players. They will do all right this season, and may even push for a top-10 finish. Prediction: draw Beat Benson: draw Swansea v West Brom The Swans are flying after two wins from two and they’ll be looking
forward to this game as they will feel another win is within their sights. Garry Monk did a great job of steadying the ship last season after Laudrup went, and he was rewarded with the full-time managerial job. And what a start he has made. Confidence is high and they will be hard opponents. West Brom are another team unbeaten, but still without a win. Alan Irvine was the shock appointment for the manager’s job, but he has shored up a leaky defence and built a decent enough team. Goals may be a problem, though. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Home win West Ham v Soton I’m not sure many people expected Hammers to put three past Palace, playing with flair and confidence. But can they continue that form into their next game, especially after extra-time
and a penalty shoot-out defeat by Sheffield Utd in the week? Most fans want to see the back of Big Sam, and a poor performance here puts him under pressure. Southampton will be eager to get their season started; they were bright against Liverpool but struggled last time out against West Brom. They have some talented players and look a decent team, but these are the games they need to be winning. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Home win Everton v Chelsea So Everton have signed Samuel E’to, a player coming to the end of his career but with undoubted talent He’s not going to start many games, but he is a great Plan B to bring off the bench if a game is getting away from them. This is an ideal first fixture for him as he left Chelsea in the summer and was called an old man by Mourinho last season. What better way to get revenge than with a goal? Chelsea look strong and have made an excellent start. Diego Costa has scored his first goals and they are playing well defensively. I believe they are a striker short, but will they buy one after saying their transfer business was done. Prediction: draw Beat Benson: Away win Aston Villa v Hull Judging by the start they have both made, this will not be a game for the purists. Villa have been tidy enough and have put early points on
the board. But though they haven’t really been tested yet, they will view this fixture as winnable, especially being the home team. And another win would be viewed as a great start to the season. Hull have been strengthening this week, bringing in Michael Dawson from Spurs. He’s a solid signing, but they have yet to replace Shane Long and a lack of goals could prove costly. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Draw Spurs v Liverpool Spurs have made a flying start to the season and look like a decent attacking team. But the standard of opponent hasn’t really tested them yet. This game will give them an idea as to how far they have progressed. They have a Europa League game in the lead-up to this clash, but it’s at home so it shouldn’t affect them too much. Liverpool, apparently, brought in new defenders in the summer, but it didn’t look that way against Man City because two defensive errors cost them. They also looked poor in attack and their final ball was wasteful. A big improvement is needed if they are to challenge for the title, but I suspect they would be happy with fourth place. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Away win Leicester v Arsenal Leicester look a fairly good side, performing well to get a draw against Everton. And they didn’t look out of their depth against Chelsea. With performances like those, they should be okay. They are solid at the back, have a couple of decent goal-scorers and will thrive against the teams around them. They will also be difficult to beat at home. Big things are expected from the Gunners this season, especially after splashing the cash. Injuries are always the worry for them, though and it looks as though Giroud could be out for three months, Wenger needs another striker, but he’s running out of time. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Home win
