Britain’s new welterweight king brutally stabbed on Golf del Sur

BRITISH world boxing champion, Kell Brook, is in hospital after being stabbed in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday) on Golf del Sur.

A Guardia Civil source told Canarian Weekly he “lost a lot of blood” after suffering wounds to his left leg and defensive cuts to his arms. He is in Candelaria hospital after the incident, which took place in Las Adelfas. The 28-year-old fighter won the IBF welterweight title a few weeks ago in his 33rd undefeated contest. He is winding down on holiday with his heavilypregnant partner, Lindsey, and was enjoying a night out on Wednesday evening. Brook was pictured in a couple of bars, smiling

and happy to pose for pictures, which popped up on Facebook. It is understood that at around 7am, he had an argument with a man in an apartment in the Las Adelfas 1 complex. Brook, who was stabbed, staggered out of the front entrance and on to the road. From there, he stumbled around 100 yards towards the Sunningdale Village complex. Yesterday morning, the blood trail was there for all to see. It seems that Brook was able to either scale or fall over a one-metre high wall and on to the patio. Neighbours say he threw some furniture around, maybe in an effort to stop a further attack. He used an object, thought to be a chair, to try to break the glass door of the apartment, presumably to gain entrance and raise the alarm.

He was able to make a sizeable hole, but was unable to shatter the glass or gain entry to the apartment. But the noise startled residents and the complex reception, and security were alerted. They subsequently called police and an ambulance. Guardia Civil cordoned off the area and forensic officers spent the whole morning photographing and cataloguing the scene. Brook was rushed to hospital, where his injuries were described as “non-life threatening”. But Canarian Weekly understands that, initially, Kel’s family were told he was in a critical condition. And as we go to press, his girlfriend had still not been allowed to see him, and police officers were still guarding the front and back entrance of the apartment where the attack took place. Brook’s parents flew

into Tenerife last night (Thursday) and they will be joined by his promoter Eddie Hearn, who arrives this morning (Friday). He told the Daily Mail: “I will be flying out to see what is going on. We are all worried about what has happened.” Neighbours were shocked by the incident. One told us: “This morning, it was like something from an episode of CSI. There were Guardia Civil everywhere and all these people in forensic outfits. We were not allowed to leave the complex.” It is the second time Brook has been stabbed. In 2007, he was attacked outside a nightclub in his hometown of Sheffield as he left the Cactus Club. He was knifed in the side and buttocks. The champion boxer is no stranger to the Canary Islands. He often comes here for training camps and recently had a couple of weeks in Fuertuventura. He has also used Gran Canaria and Tenerife as a training base in the past, and he holidays here regularly. The 28-year-old is seen as the next big thing in British boxing. Having beaten American Shawn Porter to win the IBF world belt in California, he was expected to travel to Las Vegas next week to watch the Floyd Mayweather-Marcos Maidana fight in an attempt to raise his profile. And there has been talk of a mega fight next summer. A Wembley

blockbuster against former world champ Amir Khan in May is close to being signed in what would be one of the biggest British fights of all time. Brook’s stabbing is the latest in a long line of problems for boxers outside the ring. Last month, former European champion Jamie Moore was shot in the thigh and hip in

Marbella. He told Sky Sports: “It’s shocking what has happened to Kell and I hope it’s not too serious. “Let’s hope for a fast recovery. To be honest, it’s a bit scary. I was in hospital for eight days in Spain and they looked after me brilliantly. “But there is the language barrier, so it can be a bit intimidating. I just hope he’s okay.”

FREE! Sick boy’s parents win battle with authorities

Photos: BBC

THE astonishing saga of seriously-ill Ashya King and his parents, who were imprisoned in Madrid after “kidnapping” him, was finally resolved on Tuesday evening - seemingly, to everyone’s satisfaction.

Brett and Naghemeh King were imprisoned in Madrid after taking five-year-old Ashya, who has a brain tumour, from a Southampton hospital against medical advice and heading to Spain. It appeared to be a heartless move by authorities from both countries and caused worldwide uproar But Mum and Dad were released on Tuesday evening after UK prosecutors withdrew a European arrest warrant, saying they were happy any risk to Ashya’s life “was not as great or immediate as originally thought”. The couple fled England after being told there was nothing more surgeons could do to save the youngster’s life. But they were convinced there was a way - and they appear to be correct. It emerged on Wednesday that the Proton Therapy Centre

(PTC) in Prague has reviewed Ashya’s medical documentation and says he can be treated there. Initially, the PTC says Dr Gary Nicolin, consultant paediatric oncologist at Southampton Hospital, has said Ashya must first undergo two cycles of chemotherapy. That will take several weeks but Ashya, who has been looked after in a Malaga hospital in the absence of his parents, would then be able to travel to Prague for proton therapy, which uses a form of radiation that targets cancer cells while leaving healthy tissue virtually untouched. As the couple left Madrid’s Soto Del Real prison on Tuesday evening, a relieved Mr King told reporters: “We have been dying to see Ashya’s face for so long.” He thanked the British public for their support, adding: “We’re tired … yearning to see our son. We’re completely relieved.” When asked how angry the couple were, Mr King said: “I wouldn’t say angry - I’m just missing my son so much. My heart is aching for my son, and anger can’t come in at the moment because I’ve just got these feelings that I’ve got to see my son’s face.” Mrs King added: “All

I could do was cry and pray in prison. I just want to wet his mouth because he can’t drink through his mouth. I want to brush his teeth, I want to turn him side to side every 15 minutes because he can’t move.” The Kings had spent three nights inside the jail, having been arrested on the Saturday. But once the Crown Prosecution Service decided to drop legal proceedings against them, they were freed after about seven hours. They were driven off on the long journey down to southern Spain for an emotional reunion with Ashya and their six other children in Malaga. And proud Dad told his son at his bedside: “I love you.” Mr King added, after a five-hour visit: “He was so happy to see us that he had trouble breathing.” Flanked by lawyers, Mr King was set to see a cancer specialist yesterday (Thursday) to put together a treatment plan ahead of a ruling on Ashya’s future at Monday’s High Court ruling. Events had taken an even better turn on Wednesday. Children’s charity Kids‘n’CancerUK agreed to cover the £100,000 needed for Ashya’s private treatment and living costs after donors pledged

£35,000 in just 24 hours. Police efforts to track down Ashya began after his parents took him from Southampton General Hospital without doctors’ consent in order to seek proton beam treatment abroad. A Spanish judge ordered their release on Tuesday after the Crown Prosecution Service said it had “urgently reviewed the case”. A CPS spokesman said: “We consider there is insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction for any criminal offence.” Never in a million years could the family have imagined they would be plastered all over the front pages of Britain’s most popular newspapers. But right from the start, it had the makings of a spectacular escapade story, leading to condemnation of the UK’s legal system. As one reader said: “How can you kidnap your own son when he is in your custody? There was no restraining order - nothing. Yet the parents were treated like criminals. It was shameful.” Ashya’s disappearance from Southampton Hospital led to searches in France and Spain, and information from the hospital made it clear the par-

ents were endangering their son’s life because they would not have had the correct drugs with which to treat him - which proved untrue. Prime Minister David Cameron welcomed the move to drop the prosecution, tweeting: “It’s important this little boy gets treatment & the love of his family.” Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said a top cancer specialist would be flown out to Spain to advise Ashya’s parents. He added: “What we want to do is make sure that Ashya’s family get the best independent advice. “It’s been a very unfortunate sequence of events, and there have clearly been some misunderstandings along the way. What we want to focus on is getting the right treatment for Ashya.” The five-year-old was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma, a type of brain tumour, which was successfully removed by surgeons last month. But to help prevent its return, his parents wanted him to be given proton beam therapy a treatment the NHS does not provide in the UK, although it does refer patients to other countries for treatment. University Hospital Southampton NHS

Foundation Trust says Ashya’s chances of recovery with regular treatment are “very good”. But it had also said that proton radiotherapy over standard radiotherapy would be of “no benefit to him”. A Trust spokesman said: “It was then, during unsupervised leave in the Trust’s grounds, that Ashya’s parents decided to remove him without informing or seeking the consent of medical staff. “When Ashya went missing last week, we had no option but to call the police because we did not know where he was, or what his parents’ intentions were.” The Prime Minister’s spokesman said the Home Office had been discussing with Hampshire Police its handling of the investigation. Hampshire Police Commissioner Simon Hayes said the force had been correct to pursue the arrest warrant. “I’m confident, with the evidence that I have, that it was the right thing to do,” he added. “Hampshire Constabulary were given information by Southampton General Hospital that said Ashya was in grave danger and he needed to be found for his life to be saved.”

ADEJE Council is doubling the public parking spaces available in La Postura, in the town.

The large parking square, in the commercial axis, is being extended to offer more parking for residents, workers and shoppers. The work is being carried out by the local Department of Works and Services, under Councillor Gonzalo Delgado Díaz. Parking will continue to be free in the zone, and the work will also see the entrance to the parking bay improved. There are between 8090 spaces available now, and that is set to rise to 170, including more spaces for those with cars adapted for special mobility needs. Councillor Delgardo Diaz added that spaces “will be redistributed in a way that makes parking easier and more efficient”. La Postura is located between two of the main arterial streets for Adeje town - the Avenida de la Constitución and the Calle Piedra Redonda, carrying a high percentage of traffic to and from the centre. The Councillor said: “For us, it is vital that we carry out this work to improve parking in the zone.” He added: “On completion of the project, there will be a new access to the parking zone from the Avenida de

la Constitución, which should improve circulation and will see the Constitución and Piedra Redonda connected by a new paved area, making life easier for residents.” The works will not just benefit drivers and pedestrians but is part of an overall improvement plan for the zone, with upgrades in the green zones and trees and plants along the streets to “reduce as much as possible, any visual im-

pact the new parking may have on the image of the area”. The Council is also hoping to carry out the work as quickly as possible, given the high volume of traffic using the zone daily and the busy commercial life in the area. Councillor Delgardo Diaz said: “We are working to minimise the disturbance to residents and businesses. “The intention is to finish before the pre-

Jobless total down again The number of jobless people out of work and claiming unemployment benefits has again fallen in the Canaries.

Last month, 1,754 fewer people were claiming benefits, which amounted to a 0.65% decline from the previous month. It’s not a lot, admittedly, but at least it continues to head in the right direction, although there are still 266,668 people out of work in the Canaries. Year on year, unemployment fell by 19,413 against the same month in 2013, representing a decrease of

6.79% in the archipelago. By provinces, August’s main improvement came in Las Palmas (Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura), with 1,090 fewer unemployed (-0.77%), while in Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro) there were drops of 664 people unemployed -0.53% less. In annual terms, the cumulative drop in unemployment in the Las Palmas province was 7.27% (11,060 unemployed). There were also 8,353 fewer unemployed for the Tenerife sector, a drop of 6.23%. Most of the islands’ unemployed are wom-

en - 138,383 compared with 128,285 men. The jobless under-25s totalled 18,739, including more men - just: 9,508 against 9,231. Sectors with the highest-registered unemployment are the services with 193,573, followed by construction (38,045), industry (11,905) and agriculture (5.216). Of the total jobless registered in the islands, 18,707 are foreigners, of which 11,371 are from outside the EU, and 7.336 belong to a country within the union. The August figure also represents an improvement, with a decrease of 2.12% in the month, and 14.02% for the year so far.

work towards an improved infrastructure throughout the borough, given the financial boundaries in place. That includes ongoing

work on the building of a cultural centre in La Caleta, and the amplification of the municipal cemetery and the Plaza de Tijoco.

Canarian Health services really are in poor health! THE Canary Islands has the second-worst community health system - and has had for the past six years!

The 2104 report by the Federation of Associations for the Defence of Public Health (FADSP) was the result of 10 years spent measuring the quality of health services in the Spanish regions. The FADSP considers a variety of factors before ranking the regions. Financial and human resources for public health waiting lists, pharmaceutical policy, privatisation and private clinics and patients opinions are all part of the criteria. The sum of all these factors gives a dreadfully unfavourable outcome for the Islands. They scored just 47 points out of a maximum 98, and finished only just above Valencia, which has also occupied the final position in the last half-dozen reports.

The study defined “a clearly excessive distance between some of the regions”. And the Canaries are a massive 35 health points behind the leading region of Navarra. Some regions have upped their scoring this year and the Canary Islands is among them. But the damn-

ing report points out: “Just because some regions have improved their relative position in the standings does not mean that their health systems have progressed in absolute terms. “In fact the cuts and setbacks have, in our opinion, occurred in all regions.”

Adeje’s film fanfare for all

ADEJE is to become a film centre next weekend, hosting the CortoEspaña film festival in the Cultural Centre auditorium on th Friday (12 Sept) and Saturday. The films, mainly in Spanish, will run from 8.30pm and entry is free. Adeje Cultural Councillor Nayra Medina Bethencourt said: “This will open a new window to cinema in Adeje - something very much in demand in the borough.”

CortoEspaña’s directors described the theme, saying: “The short film is a free space where new film ideas can be explored and experimented with. “At the same time, it offers opportunities for new directors to show new or first-time works.” And for cinema-goers, it is another way of viewing and experiencing the art form. In this, Adeje’s first film festival venture, 18 short films will be screened. The full programme and information on each film can be found on the Adeje webpage, www.adeje. es and on the CortoEs-

paña page, www.cortoespana.es During the viewings, audiences can give films a rating of one to four stars, and the winning film will receive a cash prize and be shown at the gala final in Madrid. Councillor Bethencourt said: “This will ensure that audiences become more involved in valuing and critically-appraising the films they see.” Themes featured in the films are varied - from super-heroes to relationships, personal struggles, sports, adolescence, moral struggles, life and death, etc.

One of the biggest concerns is in the satisfaction rate of patients. In brief, the level of satisfaction with services, and the percentage of

those who believe the healthcare is good, is the lowest in the country. Lengthening waiting lists is also a main

gripe and needs to be tackled immediately. The decline experienced by the quality of public health systems in the different regions is, according to FADSA President Marciano Sanchez Bayle: “Because economic cuts that have occurred since 2009 will continue happening in the coming months, and this affects everything. “There are fewer beds, there is a decrease in actual health activity and a reduction in high-tech operating rooms.” The FADSP estimates that there are 53,000 fewer workers in the public system than a few years ago. Bayle added: “We know that mortality has increased globally, and this eventually impacts long-term health. “But the health reforms promoted by the Government in 2012 have been a complete failure.”

Sad farewell to ‘The Voice’

TENERIFE’S entertainment scene lost another bright light recently with the passing of Keith Kristy.

The editor says...

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

All in a day’s croaky work! I PICKED up my first sore throat and scratchy voice of the season yesterday (Thursday).

It goes with the job when you are a radio presenter. It’s same with rugby players who get torn ligaments, or footballers who get an itch! So I knew it was going to be one of those days. The Venture Restaurants’ breakfast show was going well, save for the strained voice, and then the phone goes. And as I write this right on deadline, it hasn’t stopped. Ironically, I had sent Kell Brook a message this morning to ask if he were free for an interview, not knowing I would spend all day working on his story. Hopefully, the injuries are not too severe or career-ending. During the afternoon, there was a story about a horrific beheading in London. That sent me back to that awful Friday morning in Los Cristianos. I

cannot go past that shop without thinking about what happened. Such a senseless killing. And then today, the news from the World Health Organisation that someone takes his/ her own life every 40 seconds. A major new support shows that 800,000 people take their own lives every year. I know life can be hard and I cannot for a second begin to understand what would make someone take that ultimate decision. So do me a favour this weekend. Keep the gin on the shelf, avoid watching Eastenders and listening to The Smiths. Life is short and precious. Smile and enjoy it.

He was born Keith George Viner in Gloucester on 2nd Nov 1947 and spent his childhood there. Always a musical man, Keith moved to Leeds in the Seventies to try his luck and formed the band Witticombe Fair. They were soon a hit on the entertainment scene, playing all the major clubs on the circuit. And they enjoyed TV success, winning Opportunity Knocks. The band continued to enjoy success and had regular work throughout the Eighties and early Nineties, also branching out

across the country and into Europe. They played summer

seasons in Blackpool with the likes of Linda Nolan and Canon

and Ball to name a few. Keith also played opening gigs for Roy ‘Chubby’ Brown on his tour. In 1994, Keith decided on a change of pace and moved to Tenerife, where he would enjoy 20 years of success. Often known as ‘The Voice’, he was very successful. He loved to sing. It was his passion. But after a spell of ill health, Keith returned to the UK and spent some time in St James Hospital, Leeds, where he was treated for several illnesses. He had settled in well to life back to England and was looking forward to maybe a holiday back in Tenerife next year. Sadly, he passed away in on 5th August of heart failure. Keith will be missed and remembered.

In memory of my twin Michael George Sillett (Miguel/Migs) th 15 Oct 1948-2nd Sept 2012

We cried when you passed away, We still cry today. Although we loved you dearly, We couldn’t make you stay. A Golden Heart stopped beating, Hard-working hands at rest. God broke our Hearts to prove to us, That he only takes the best. God please look after Mick, Don’t let him walk alone. This is his first time, away from home.

Love & kisses forever, Your twin Eileen and brother-in-law Derek xx

La Caleta’s new cultural centre RESIDENTS and visitors to La Caleta, in Adeje, will be able to visit the new Cultural Centre there from the beginning of next year.

Work has already started on the installation and should be completed by next February, according to Gonzalo Delgado Diaz, Councillor for Works and Services. The project was requested by the local population of this coastal village and suited Adeje Council down to the ground. That’s because it fits into the Town Hall’s borough-wide plan to empower urban zones and create communal spaces, where people can meet and develop social connections and activities throughout the year. Councillor Delgado Diaz said: “This is a pri-

ority for us, and it will enhance our network of cultural centres, designed to improve public infrastructures throughout the borough. “It will also give people living in all corners of Adeje a local meeting and activity zone.” The new centre is just beside the international diving centre, a part of the area already used as a focal point for local activities and fiestas. “This is why we waited until the end of the local fiestas this year, so they wouldn’t be affected by building work, said the Councillor. “Now, of course, the work will be completed before next year’s events.” The new centre will be 120 m2 with a central salon, changing rooms and toilets, fully accessible to all, and with an office and storage zones.

Town feast for everyone ADEJE will celebrate the Month of Gastronomy throughout September with a wide range of activities in various places: restaurants, bars, plazas and markets.

Activities include gastronomic training days, samples of local products such as cheese, honey, wine and gofio, show cooking, gastronomy markets, a tapas route, “Gastronomic and volcanic Excursions”, TV programmes

and other parallel activities. Cheese, honey and gofio are products produced and processed in Adeje town, offering a combination of flavours to tickle your taste buds. They have become a reference point in the town’s local gastronomy, thanks to the international awards traders have collected. PROGRAMME *Saturday (from 11am) Guided tour of Adeje’s Historic Centre. Departure from Plaza de España and ending with a “Coffee Meet” in Adeje.

Russia’s crisis hits EU growth RISING tensions between the EU and Russia over Ukraine has led to a slump in Eurozone manufacturing growth.

In fact, it dipped to a 13-month low last month, according to the final Markit’s Eurozone Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), which dipped to 50.7 in August, down from 51.8 in July. A figure above 50 indicates expansion, but new orders dwindled and factories suffered because of the RussiaUkraine conflict. The figures came ahead of the European Central Bank (ECB) meeting, which took place yesterday (Thursday). Markets will be seeking a clear plan from the bank to deal with this stalled eurozone recovery, as well as the threat of deflation - with inflation standing at just 0.3%. There is speculation that ECB boss Mario Draghi could be considering a quantitativeeasing scheme for the

eurozone, similar to those taken by the UK and US during the financial crisis. Rob Dobson, senior economist at Markit, said: “Although some growth is better than no growth at all, the braking effect of rising economic and geopolitical uncertainties on manufacturers is becoming more visible.” The factory PMI for Germany, Russia’s biggest EU trade partner, fell to an 11-month low of 51.4. Meanwhile, in France, the bloc’s second-largest economy, the PMI fell to 46.9. Dobson added: “France remains a real concern, as does Italy’s descent from solid expansion to stagnation. Signs that growth impetus waned in the key industrial engine of Germany, and in Spain and the Netherlands, too, is also less than reassuring. “The slowdown in industry is likely to add further fuel to the fire for analysts expecting additional monetary or fiscal stimulus to be implemented.” One positive note

came from the Republic of Ireland, which saw its PMI grow to 57.3 - its highest level since the end of 1999. Howard Archer, chief economist at IHS Global Insight, said: “The best that can be said for the August eurozone manufacturing purchasing managers’ survey is that it indicates the sector is still growing.” He added: “Eurozone manufacturers are clearly finding life very difficult at the moment as current heightened geopolitical tensions particularly related to Russia/Ukraine - add uncertainty to stillchallenging conditions in many countries. “This heightened uncertainty has clearly hit business especially, and consumer confidence, and it is likely causing some orders to be delayed or even cancelled, particularly big-ticket orders.” Archer said it was looking “ever more likely” that the ECB would, ultimately, have to undertake some form of QE, “although we suspect that it will be limited”.

Summer road deaths down THERE have been a number of road awareness campaigns this summer in Spain aimed at making motoring safer.

These include extra speed checks, alcohol and drug spot-checks, and a clampdown on mobile phone use. This has led to a slight fall in the number of fatalities this summer - 223 people died on the roads in July and August, which is a 4% decrease from the same period last year. Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz welcomed the findings, saying: “It is positive news, but we mustn’t get complacent. There is still a lot of work to be done, and we will strive to drive these figures down.”

He also stressed that this figure represented the lowest number of July-August deaths since records began in 1960, when there were 279 deaths. At that time, he recalled, there were little more than one million vehicles in the car park and two million drivers, compared with more than 31 million vehicles and 26 million drivers out there today. Regarding the number injured, he said there had been 982, compared

with 1,097 for the same period last year. The minister expressed “joy at the reduction”. But he added: “We must also remember that 223 fatalities are 223 personal tragedies.” On the other hand, he said that from January to August 2014, some 730 people died on Spanish roads - seven more than in the same 2013 period. And throughout 2013, a total of 1,134 deaths were reported on Spanish roads.

Washed-away Brit drowned A BRITISH holiday-maker drowned after being swept away by rough seas as he photographed the Atlantic. But his body was not recovered for days.

He was among six people to fall foul of the horrendous conditions around the Canaries’ coasts as severe storms and high tides battered the islands throughout last week. Four bodies were recovered, as was that of 34-year-old Ars Salam, from Derby, three days after he disappeared. At lunchtime, last Thursday, Ars was photographing huge tidal waves, which were hit-

ting the rocks and engulfing the Los Morteros beach, near Playa de las Américas, when he was literally washed away. Several brave people risked their own lives by jumping in and bat-

tling to save him, but to no avail. Fortunately, they all managed to pull themselves ashore unharmed. Helicopters and lifeboats combed the area for two days, without success. But Mr Salam’s

body was recovered on Sunday. His partner was treated for shock after the incident, having broken down at the scene and suffering a panic attack. Another tourist, swimming off the Salinetas

beach in Telde, in the north-east of Gran Canaria on the Monday, is also feared dead after intense searches proved fruitless. A 70-year-old woman, swimming at Abades in Arico, and a 50-year-

old, swimming in the Playa Montaña Arena in San Bartolomé Tirajana, Gran Canaria, both died. And so did a woman who fell into the sea while taking photographs in an area cordoned off for safety reasons near Adeje’s Playa Paraíso beach. Waves of between four and five metres were sighted, and ferry crossings run by the leading passenger ship companies Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas were abandoned all week. Tour operators were advised to caution their groups and explain what not to do during the stormy period. But authorities say a few tourists ignored safety warnings and risked their lives.

School’s much tougher - and that’s for starters IT’S going to be one heck of a shock for fiveyear-old kids just starting out in school this week in the UK.

That’s because they face a “tough” new national curriculum, which takes in fractions and computer coding. And those in early secondary school will have to study at least two Shakespeare plays. The curriculum is being implemented for most year-groups simultaneously. Teachers’ leaders insist the timetable is unrealistic, but the Department for Education’s aim is to prepare children for “life in modern Britain”. So what happens to the “once one is one, two twos are four” tables we all chanted as youngsters?

A spokesman said the British Government wanted “all children to learn the core knowledge in key subjects - the ones universities and employers value the most”. All local authority primary and secondary schools must teach the new curriculum from the start of term. Yet it is not compulsory for academies, which now comprise a majority of secondary schools. The rewritten national curriculum, described by the Prime Minister as “rigorous, engaging and tough”, sets out the framework for what children should be taught between the ages of five and 14. Former Education Secretary Michael Gove has said changes were necessary for England to keep pace with the most successful education

systems in the world. The new-look curriculum puts a stronger emphasis on skills such as “essay writing, problemsolving, mathematical modelling and computer programming”. The Department for Education says it is

Kate’s great eight! KATE BUSH, veteran pop star of the Seventies and Eighties, has set a record with no fewer than EIGHT albums in the top-40 chart the first female songstress to achieve such a feat.

The incredibly popular singer, who has returned to the stage after a 35-year gap, is on a 22-date schedule at Hammersmith Apollo. The only artists ahead of Kate are Elvis Presley, who had 12 entries in the top 40 after his 1977 death, and the Beatles, who had 11 in 2009. Kate has already completed the August shows and is now into the September and October dates. And incredibly, more than 80,000 tickets were sold for her Before the Dawn concerts at the London venue. Two of the singer’s al-

bums are in this week’s new top-10 chart, and eight overall in the top 40. Her album The Whole Story is at No.6 - three places ahead of Hounds of Love. At No.20 is 50 Words For Snow, with The Kick Inside - her first album (in February 1978) - is at No.24, The Sensual Word at No.26, The Dreaming 37th, Never For Ever 38th and Lionheart at No.40. Martin Talbot, the official Charts Company chief executive, said: “Her live shows have created a huge stir. “But for them to help

push her catalogue to make such a significant sales impact, is further evidence of the love the British public have for her music, from generation to generation.” But Kate, seemingly bewildered at the astonishing fuss being made of her by fans after all this time, was breaking records 36 years ago. In 1978 she became the first female artist in history to go to No1 on the Official Singles Chart with a song she composed herself - Wuthering Heights which topped the chart for four weeks.

“right that changes are made as soon as possible”. In primary schools, where the most significant changes are in maths, English and computing, pupils going into Years 2 and 6 this year will continue with the old curriculum in English, maths and science, so they can sit national tests at the end of the year. Russell Hobby, General Secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, said teachers had worked hard to prepare for the new curriculum over the past year. He is confident they will cope with its implementation, but he warns there could be some difficulties with maths, where more advanced topics are to be taught at a younger age. “We are confident that all the reforms can be implemented within our planned timeframe,” he said. “But one of the mistakes in the implementation of the curriculum is that it’s all being implemented at once. “In maths, you need to learn the early concepts before you learn the later concepts, so there is a problem that there will be children who have not learned the earlier concepts before being expected to learn the more demanding ones.” And Mr Hobby warned that there would have to be “a lot of cramming in maths this year” as whole classes are made

to catch up with the new demands. He added: The worst thing you can do with maths is think ahead.” The Association of Teachers and Lecturers has warned that many of its members feel their schools are not yet prepared to teach the new curriculum. Its education policy adviser, Jill Stokoe, said: “Teachers are saying they haven’t had enough information, and some people really haven’t got to grips with the new curriculum. What we are saying to them is to use their judgement.” She added that there were particular problems with maths, introducing some quite complex ideas for very young children. The history curriculum takes primary pupils through British history, from the Stone Age to the Normans. They can also study a later era, such as the Victorians. “Significant individuals” to be studied include Elizabeth I, Neil Armstrong, Rosa Parks and suffragette Emily Davison. Secondary schools will teach British history from 1066 to 1901, followed by Britain, Europe and world events from 1901, including the Holocaust and Winston Churchill Maths will expect more at an earlier age. There will be a requirement for pupils to learn their 12-times table by the age of nine. Basic

fractions, such as half or a quarter, will be taught to five-year-olds. By the end of Year 2, pupils should know the number bonds to 20, and be precise in using and understanding place value English will strengthen the importance of Shakespeare, with pupils aged between 11 and 14 expected to have studied two of his plays. Word lists for kids aged 8-9 include “medicine” and “knowledge”, and by 10 and 11 they should be spelling “accommodate” and “rhythm”. Science will shift towards a stronger sense of hard facts, and “scientific knowledge”. In primary school, there will be new content on The Solar System, speed and evolution. In secondary school, there will be a clearer sense of the separate subjects of physics, biology and chemistry, while climate change will also be included Design and technology is linked to innovation and digital industries. Pupils will learn about 3D printing and robotics. Computing will teach pupils how to write code. Pupils aged five to seven will be expected to “understand what algorithms are” and to “create and debug simple programmes”. By the age of 11, pupils will have to “design, use and evaluate computational abstractions that model the state and behaviour of real-world problems and physical systems”. The DoE said the reforms reflected the Government’s desire to “ensure every child leaves school prepared for life in modern Britain”. A spokesperson said: “We believe it is right that changes are made as soon as possible to benefit the youngest people. “We are confident that all the reforms can be implemented within our planned timeframe, which is a testament to the dedication of our high-quality teaching profession.”

Ebola drug could turn tide RESEARCHERS believe the experimental Ebola drug ZMapp is a “very important step forward”.

And that’s despite the only clinical trial data on the drug shows it is 100% effective in monkeys. There are limited supplies only, so, even if it is 100% successful, it will not help the 20,000 people predicted to be infected during the outbreak in West Africa. And so far, tragically, two out of seven people given the drug have later died from the disease. ZMapp has been dubbed the “secret serum” as it is still in the experimental stages of drug development with, until now, no public data on effectiveness. Doctors have turned to it because there is no cure for Ebola, which has killed more than 1,500 people since it started in Guinea. Researchers, who have been investigating different combinations of anti-bodies - a part

of the immune system which binds to viruses - as a therapy, have published their data in nature, a medical magazine Previous combinations have shown some effectiveness in animal studies, and ZMapp is the latest cocktail and contains three anti-bodies. Trials on 18 rhesus macaques infected with Ebola showed 100% survival. This included animals given the drug up to five days after infection. For

the monkeys, this would be a relatively late stage in the infection - around three days before it becomes fatal. Scientists say this is significant as previous therapies needed to be given before symptoms even appeared. One of the researchers, Dr Gary Kobinger, from the Public Health Agency of Canada, said this was a huge step up from previous anti-body combinations. “The level of improvement was beyond my

own expectation,” he added. “I was quite surprised that the best combination would rescue animals as far as day five. It was fantastic news. “What was very exceptional is that we could rescue some of the animals which had advanced disease.” However, as the scientists know full well, there is always caution when interpreting the implications for humans from animal data. A Liberian doctor, one of three taking the drug in the country, and a Spanish priest, both died from the infection, despite ZMapp treatment. William Pooley, the first Briton to contract Ebola during this outbreak, has been given the experimental drug, as were two US doctors who recovered. The course of the infection is slower in humans than macaques, so it has been cautiously estimated that ZMapp may be effective as late as day nine or 11 after infection. But Dr Kobinger

said: “We know there is a point of no return, where there is too much damage to major organs, so there’s a limit.” The group wants to start clinical trials in people to genuinely assess the effectiveness of the drug. Professor Jonathan Ball, a virologist at the University of Nottingham, told the BBC: “Before, ZMapp was a total mystery. “So this is an incredible improvement on those earlier cocktails, to have 100% clearance and, most importantly, that clearance when they’ve started to show outward signs of infection.” Of the seven treated patients, he added: “Clearly, there is the caveat that all evidence in humans is anecdotal, and no hard evidence has been released on what happens to the virus in those patients.” Professor Peter Piot, director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said: “I never thought that 40 years after I encountered the first Ebola

outbreak, this disease would still be taking lives on such a devastating scale. “This well-designed trial in non-human primates provides the most convincing evidence to date that ZMapp may be an effective treatment of Ebola infection in humans. It is now critical that human trials start as soon as possible.” Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) *High fever, bleeding and central nervous system damage *Spread by body fluids, such as blood and saliva *Fatality rate can reach 90%, but current outbreak has mortality rate of about 55% *Incubation period is two to 21 days *There is no vaccine or cure *Supportive care, such as rehydrating patients who have diarrhoea and vomiting, can help recovery *Fruit bats, a delicacy for some West Africans, are considered to be the virus’s natural host line.

‘I was an idiot’ says man who killed John Lennon JOHN LENNON’S murderer has finally apologised for being “an idiot” after chasing notoriety in 1980.

Mark Chapman, in a transcript from a parole hearing last week, said he still gets letters about the pain he caused by shooting the ex-Beatle. At his eighth paroleboard hearing, he said: “I am sorry for causing that type of pain. I am sorry for being such an idiot and choosing the wrong way for glory.” But it did him no good because the threemember panel, again denying his release, said it would “so deprecate the serious nature of the crime as to undermine respect for the law”. Chapman fired five shots on 8th Decem-

ber outside the Dakota apartment house where Lennon lived with his wife, Yoko Ono, on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, striking him four times. After pleading guilty to second-degree murder, Chapman was sentenced in 1981 to “20 years to life” in prison. Last week, he told parole-board members that he would understand if they denied him release, based solely on the number of people he hurt. Chapman, now 59, said: “Many, many people loved him. He was a great and talented man and they are still hurting. I get letters, so that’s a major factor. It’s not a regular crime.” Chapman, infirmed at the Wende Correctional Facility, east of Buffalo, can try again for release in two years.

Hacker nicks raunchy pix INTIMATE pictures of celebrities, including nude shots, are believed to have been stolen and posted online.

Gabi Grecko, the 25-year-old model, is “abhorrent” at being listed alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and Kirsten Dunst in what is proving to be the largest celebrity hacking scandal ever. Nude photos of over 100 female celebrities have been leaked online. But while the explicit photos of the model have yet to surface, she is appalled by the breach of her privacy. Grecko said on Monday: “I feel like anything I didn’t release myself that was accessed without my permission is shameful. “Some people are very private and, maybe, hugely affected and feel violated because of this. There have also been many suicides connected to non-consented photos being released.”

The Cyber hacker has targeted dozens and dozens of female celebrities, posting their graphic, naked, mobile phone photographs online Oscar-winning actress Lawrence is one of the most high-profile names on the list of victims, which also includes Kaley Cuoco, Selena Gomez and Rihanna. And some images are understood to have

been obtained from services such as APPLE iCloud, which back up content from devices on to the internet. And Google is alos said to be involved. Apple says it is investigating whether iCloud accounts have been hacked. Ms Lawrence, who stars in The Hunger Games films, has requested an investiga-

tion after a hacker apparently obtained photographs, with graphic content, from the mobile phones of numerous celebrities. Pop star Rihanna is among those targeted by the hackers, and Kim Kardashian is believed to be another celebrity whose account was hacked A spokeswoman for the actress said the internet posts were “a flagrant violation of privacy”. An FBI spokesman told the Associated Press news agency it was “aware of the allegations” and was “addressing the matter”. Apple spokeswoman Nat Kerris was quoted by Reuters as saying in an email: “We take userprivacy very seriously and are actively investigating this report.” Experts have raised concerns over the security of “Cloud” storage sites. “It is important for celebrities and the general public to remember that images and data no longer just reside on the

device that captured it,” said Ken Westin, security analyst at Tripwire. “Although many cloud providers may encrypt the data, communications between the device and The Cloud, it does not mean that the image and data is encrypted when the data is at rest. “If you can view the image in the Cloud service, so can a hacker.” The user posting them, who defined him or herself as a “collector” rather than “hacker”, said more images of different celebrities would soon be posted. Copies of the images spread to other services, including Reddit, Imgur and Twitter, from which they were subsequently deleted by administrators. While some of the celebrities said the images were fake, others have confirmed their authenticity. Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead posted on Twitter: “To those of you looking at photos I took with my husband years ago in the privacy

of our home, hope you feel great about yourselves. “Knowing those photos were deleted long ago, I can only imagine the creepy effort that went into this.” Her comments would suggest iCloud was not at play, because pictures on Apple’s service are viewable online for 30 days only. Sarah Schaaf, Imgur’s director of community, tweeted about her efforts to delete copies of the leaked pictures. Raj Samani, from Intel Security, said: “Almost every service used online requires a password, and to ensure your passwords are secure, they must be complex.” But more often than not, it is human weaknesses that give hackers the simplest route to compromising accounts. “Phishing” people meaning to trick them into giving up their password - is considered perhaps the simplest and most-targeted way hackers gain access to accounts.

A Different View

By Mike Walsh A RELUCTANCE to enter a lift with a woman on her own was voiced by Francisco de la Riva, Partido Popular Mayor of Valladolid.

He explained why, saying: “I would think twice about getting into a lift alone with a woman for fear of false cries of rape.” He adds: “Imagine, you are in a lift with a girl out to get you. She rips off her bra or skirt and runs out screaming that you tried to assault her.” What perturbs me more than his expressed opinion was the storm of indignation that followed his remark. The hapless mayor, publicly crucified, was forced to publicly recant. I have a feeling that had a woman declined to share a lift with a male she distrusted, her deci-

Fancy a lift?

No thanks!

sion to wait for the next lift would have been praised by the sisterhood and the chattering classes. I have occasionally written about remarks made by public figures who, in the past, made off-colour remarks that would, if repeated today, call for smelling salts to be passed under twitching nostrils. The new dark ages Have we reached a stage of sanctimonious self-censorship that finds its equals only in the dark corners of the Inquisition, Dark Ages or the witch-hunts of 18th Century England and Germany? Are we returning to selfrighteous bridling at religious opinion expressed that is out of kilter with orthodoxy? If so, we enter a new Dark Age. What is it about our society that has created a climate of fear in the

event of one innocently offending the feminist lobby? As one wit put it: “Men are of earth, so are women. Get over it.” Only by way of a little female teasing have I ever been described as a misogynist. I can be sure that if the public humiliation of men - our fathers, brothers and sons - was turned and aimed at women, there would be lynching parties abroad.

Excuse the pun. Men are now victims of witch hunts Men are now suspect if they take part in any activity that involves children. A young father recently joined in the fun at a theme park’s children play-area. As he and his child played, he photographed his small daughter. She was having a whale of a time on a slide. His mistake was to take photographs of the happy family experience. The hue and cry went up: “He’s a paedophile.” The cry was taken up by hysterical mothers. Soon afterwards, the poor man had to be escorted from the area by security staff. As if this bitch-hunt isn’t enough, we all know that if a man is charged with a heinous sexual crime, he is exposed to public scrutiny long before his trial takes place, while the alleged victim keeps her anonymity. Some have taken their own lives. Many moved home or kept away from their families. The only exception to this rule is if the victim is a child. The message this sends is: “if you’re a sexual deviant, you’re safer targeting children than adult women”. I have a confession to make. Yes, it is time to get the smelling salts out again. I would think twice before I picked up a single woman hiker. If I chanced upon a distressed child, I would be cautious about approaching and prudent in offering comfort. I will take a chance and take a lift with a woman I don’t know - but proba-

bly will not enter a sealed train compartment if a woman travelling alone is already in there. Mysterious attacks on female passengers As you pick yourself up from the floor, I am reminded of a mysterious crime wave that once occurred in New York. At the time, there seemed to be a high level of reports and arrests following a spate of sexual assaults carried out on women passengers travelling alone on trains. Only after scores of men had been gaoled for sexually assaulting women in such circumstances was the cause of many “assaults” established. Women, or rather a subsection of this protected species, were preying on male commuters. Their modus operandi was to threaten the male passenger of assaulting them unless he emptied his wallet. Most men wisely coughed up. Some were outraged and denied doing so, or they called their blackmailers’ bluff. Many paid a high price when later found guilty as charged. They found themselves not on a commuter trip to the office but in a Black Maria on their way to the local nick. The judiciary finally awoke on one occasion when a male victim was brought before them. Charged with assaulting a woman travelling alone on a train, he called his witness. The train guard took the stand and the oath. The accused passenger then began to question the guard as to what had happened after he had heard the woman’s screams. “The accused drew my attention to his cigar,” the guard said. “He asked me to note the length of the column of ash at its end.” The guard then indicated a near one-inch of cigar ash in length. The accused suggested to me that he couldn’t attack the woman as she had described without placing the cigar down. Had he done so, then the rocking motion of

the train would have dislodged the ash from the cigar. Her story didn’t stack up, the defendant was freed and the female predator charged accordingly. The story made headlines. From that day on, there were far fewer allegations of male assaults on the city’s trains. Men could finally, safely go about their daily routines, free from the fear of female predators. The women from hell The female often appears to be the deadlier of the species. Natalie Mortimer, a 25-year-old nurse, has been struck off after being sentenced to 22 months in prison. She claimed falsely that her own grandfather had sexually molested her when she was of primary-school age. It was an attempt to get her hands on inheritance money he had put aside for her. She wasted 175 hours of police time. On being sentenced, she showed no remorse and smiled at friends as she was led from the dock. In the same day’s news Maria Rodriguez, 29 years old, from Mexico, confessed to brutally murdering Nadia Avile, who was eight months pregnant. She had done so to brutally abort and seize the victim’s unborn baby. Both mother and child died. In Whitstable, Kent, 51year old Bettina Bunte was sacked from Joy Lane Children’s Centre in Whitstable, Kent. Well known in the neighbourhood, the carer was promoting her mummy porn novel based on an affair she had as a young teenager with a much older man. Her story clearly identified her as the author of a Fifty Shades of Grey genre novel about a child’s love affair with a much older teacher. Sacked from her local authority job at a Childcare’s Centre, she had the gall to say that her novel was not pornography. It just contained sexually explicit descriptions. Yes, I had to read this remark twice, too.

Gino’s Italian Escape: A Taste Of The Sun ITV1, 20.00 “For Italians, the most important thing in life is food. Let me show you how mouth-watering ingredients have shaped my home country.” Gino D’Acampo In this second series, chef Gino D’Acampo is heading north for an Italian summer, to meet the people, experience the culture and of course taste the food of his beautiful home country. Gino will take viewers on a magical journey through stunning locations which have intrigued travellers for centuries: enchanting Venice, romantic Florence, picturesque Liguria, timeless Siena and the food lover’s paradise of Emilia-Romagna. Across six episodes, Gino encounters wonderful characters, experiences authentic Italian traditions and sources the finest local ingredients – while cooking his own dishes along the way. Episode one sees Gino explore beautiful Florence, where he’s on a mission to examine the food that has shaped this Renaissance city. His journey begins as he tackles the famous ‘bistecca alla Fiorentina’ – the finest, thickest, juiciest steak in Tuscany. Our chef is excited to grill the colossal cut of beef at a local restaurant and – naturally – has to savour its delicious flavour. Gino says: “It’s like butter, it melts in your mouth. Wow.” Enthused by the mouth-watering steak, Gino shows off his take on this dish: Tagliata (sliced T-bone steak) with a colourful courgette ribbon and goat’s cheese salad. Before leaving the city, Gino encounters a historic speciality - ‘lampredotto’. This popular Florentine street food is made from cow’s stomach – but is Gino game for eating it? Gino prides himself when it comes to being adventurous with new foods, saying: “My theory on trying new food is very simple. Life is too short, whenever I have the chance, I will try everything that you put in front of me. Simple.” When confronted with the offal though, Gino admits: “I can see why people could be slightly squeamish when they see this.” Satisfied with Florence’s best savoury food, Gino heads to the city of Prato for something sweeter. Here, he meets a pastry chef who thrills Gino with his speciality ‘peaches’ – brioche buns with an aromatic, creamy filling. Inspired by his delightful discovery, Gino conjures up his own dessert of apple poached in red wine with amaretti biscuit cream.

The Suspicions of Mr Whicher ITV1, 21.05 Whicher is drawn into a high-stakes case when Sir Edward Shore, the former Home Secretary comes to him with a delicate problem. His son, Charles has returned from India, post Mutiny, with his young family. Charles won’t be drawn on the circumstances but reveals an Indian man, Asim Jabour, has followed him to England and has used threating behaviour. Whicher agrees to try and find Asim and put a stop to the threat to the family; he understands that the wrong kind of attention to the situation could place Sir Edward’s reputation in jeopardy. During Whicher’s inquiries at the docks he learns Asim was travelling with a younger man, possibly his brother. He was also seen talking to a woman on board, who was working as a governess for the Gilbraith family. Whicher goes to see the Governess, Miss Khan who remembers speaking to the man and seems concerned for the welfare of the younger boy. Whicher assures her that he’s trying to find them safe and well. But this is not to be; Whicher is summonsed to the docks by a timid Lascar, only to find Asim’s body being pulled out of the river. He has been murdered, but by who? Whicher returns to the Shore family, wary that Charles has taken it upon himself to do something stupid. Did he kill Asim? Charles denies it, but is clearly pleased Asim is dead. But when Whicher informs him that Asim’s younger brother, Roshan, travelled to the UK with him, Charles is sobered once more. Whicher goes searching for Roshan. When he finds him, Roshan is scared and vulnerable. He lashes out, slashing Whicher’s shoulder with a knife in a desperate attempt to get away. Whicher returns to help Charles guard the house and keep the family safe. Sir Edward’s wife is clearly growing more angered by the situation and comments that she knew that the children should never have been brought to England. Whicher realises the children must be the key to all this trouble, and Charles is hiding a family secret that crosses two continents. When Roshan comes to the house and threatens to have justice for his brother’s murder Charles panics and Roshan is left injured. Whicher calls upon his landlady, Mrs Piper who is a nurse, to treat Roshan. Whicher’s investigation later uncovers a critical link – Charles’ Indian lover. Could she hold the clue to Asim’s death, and the secret Charles is hiding? As Whicher nears the truth, the case takes a sudden turn for the worse when Charles’ children mysteriously go missing. Haunted by the loss of his own son years before, Whicher’s concern for their safety grows. He must find them at all costs, but who could behind their disappearance?

ITV1, 19.15 Adrian Chiles introduces live coverage of England’s first Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland in Basel. Marking the start of the Three Lions’ campaign to qualify for the finals in France, coach Roy Hodgson faces the nation he took to the World Cup in 1994 in what some see as the toughest test of England’s group. With matches coming up against San Marino, Estonia, Slovenia and Lithuania before the end of the 2014/15 season, England’s players will be looking to make a winning start against a team which made the last 16 in Brazil. Swiss dangerman Xherdan Shaqiri, who scored a hat-trick against Honduras at the World Cup, will be hoping to make an impact against an England side looking to improve after a disappointing tournament. Players familiar to England fans may include Aston Villa centre-back Philippe Senderos, former Arsenal defender Yohan Djourou, and former Hammer Valon Behrami. Joining Adrian in Basel are former England manager Glenn Hoddle and Lee Dixon, with commentary from Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend.

Alex Polizzi: The Fixer BBC2, 21:00 Alex Polizzi, champion of small businesses, finds fixes for the critical issues that kill so many companies. In this episode Alex looks at trading with the big boys as she meets the Keebles, a family of farmers turned sausage producers who rely heavily on the supermarkets selling their product to survive. Like many small producers, however, they often feel powerless in that relationship. Privileged access to Morrisons’ food development kitchens reveals some interesting results, and Alex uncovers some secrets behind the layout of Tesco shelves. Can Alex get a small company like Heck to survive on the shelves of the supermarket and realise their dream of being the UK’s number one premium brand?

Home prices are edging up again A SIGNIFICANT landmark was reached in the second quarter of the year as home prices rose almost 1%.

It was the first increase in six years, according to an index tracked by the Association of Registrars. The slight 0.97% increase from a year may not be enough to hail a recovery. But it is certainly adds to evidence that a turnaround is in the works. And even more encour-

aging was the fact that prices were up 1.53% from the previous quarter. But the Registrars’ report was not all good news. The number of sales dropped 5.4% from the previous quarter, although the 78,464 total was still significantly higher than the record low of 72,560 in the fourth quarter of 2013. What didn’t help much was the sharp 18.89% quarterly drop in newhome sales. Growing demand from foreign buyers was a key driver, account-

ing for 13.03% of sales. As usual, Brits were the most active overseas buyers, representing

15.77% chases eigners, French

of home purmade by forfollowed by the (10.11%), Rus-

sians (8.08%), Germany (7.53%) and Belgians (7.26%). Andalusia recorded

the highest number of sales at 15,583, followed by Catalonia (11,980), Comunidad Valencia (11,591) and Madrid (10,522). But prices are still down 32%% from their peak and now stand at 2003 levels, says the report. A new study by the Registrars, tracking mortgage defaults, found a 2.39% increase in foreclosure proceedings’ starts - 18,921 compared with 18,480 in the first quarter. Mortgage rates continued to decline, hitting 3.80% and down from the first quarter’s 3.97%.

End of Summer Sale? By Sue McDonald THIS is usually the time of year in the UK when there are End of Summer Sales, in which you can pick up bargains in outdoor furniture and barbeques, etc.

The bad news is that this doesn’t really happen here. The good news is that it’s because our lovely weather continues pretty

much all year round. Our climate has a huge influence on how we furnish our properties here in Tenerife. The trick is to work

with it, rather than fight it! For example, we use suncurtain (material with a black-out layer in the middle) to keep

out heat and light, whereas in the UK, the curtains are lined to keep the heat in. We don’t have carpets here, and tiled floors are much cooler and easier to keep clean. However, if the room appears a bit stark and echoing, you can use a rug to define a seating area, soften the whole design scheme and add a splash of co-ordinating colour. The type of fabric used on sofas, etc, also has to be considered. Suncream can be a nuisance, so it is best to use a type of wipeclean material, or at least use dark fabrics with removable cushion covers that can be washed. When it comes to

beds and comfort, the climate also plays a part. Latex mattresses are extremely popular in the UK, and you will see on the TV campaigns that they advertise the advantages of sinking into the mattress and trapping body heat. Yes, definitely ideal for the UK, but not so great here, especially in the Summer! That is not to say you need to have a hard or uncomfortable bed. Our most popular model has a sprung core which provides the firmness, and then a layer of visco-elastic on the top, so that your body sinks into the mattress to a point, and is then given support. From an interiordesign point of view, many people are happy to go with brighter colours than they would do at home. The light here is different, and you can get away with using bright jewel colours that would look out of place in the UK. A colonial look can also be achieved by using ceiling fans, and billowing white voiles, and using bamboo furniture to give a tropical feel. We usually go for a fairly neutral background, and then in-

troduce the colour in changeable items such as cushions, pictures and rugs, as mentioned above. We also spend much more time outside and, whereas in the UK you might get a few weeks of good weather, plus the odd, unexpectedlysunny weekend, here you can pretty much plan your barbeques or outside events well in advance. Therefore, it makes sense to invest in some durable terrace furniture, and some nice chunky cushions for comfort. Synthetic rattan furniture is ideal because it is resistant to sun and water, and, thus, can be left outside all year round. As it has an aluminium frame, it is also quite light and easy to move around - whether to find or to avoid the sun. A word of warning here, though, that sometimes the very cheap ranges will have a limited life. So like most things, you do tend to get what you pay for. So, no End of Summer Sale, but months more of lovely weather to come instead! All items are available from Deco Nuevo. Please call for free estimates, or to visit our showroom.

S H O R T-T E R M rentals are always a big talking point these days, with several municipalities moving to impose new regulations.

If nothing else, the TripAdvisor report based on a survey of 1,200 Spanish travellers - is a reminder that holiday homes are, undoubtedly, a fash-

ionable option for this breed. “The analysis that we developed for the fourth consecutive year underscores the popularity of vacation rentals for travellers,” said TripAdvisor’s report. When choosing a holiday home, price is more important than ever, according to the survey. A total of 87% said price was the determining factor in their choice, which was an increase from past

years. “This year the price has become more important with respect to 2013,” said TripAdvisor spokesperson Blanca Zayas. The second-most important factor was location, at 85%, but homeowners should note that 67% said the availability of equipment such as air conditioning and a washing machine played a key role. And despite a wide variety of new hotel choices and recent

concerns about standards, holiday homes remain a popular choice for Spaniards. A total of 68% of the respondents to travel giant TripAdvisor said they had used a holiday home, which is in line with the company’s past studies. Asked why they used homes instead of hotels, 55% said they preferred the freedom offered by a home, while 17% said they enjoyed the ability to save money by cooking at home.

Hot Tub Britain ITV1, 21.00 Britain has gone hot tub crazy. Once the preserve of the rich and famous, hot tubs have officially gone mainstream and are now an affordable luxury for many people, an essential garden accessory and the ultimate way to relax al fresco. One family firm in Blackpool is cashing in on the trend for bubbles, currently selling around 40 hot tubs a week to everyone from footballers to dinner ladies. At their Hot Tubs superstore, run by Den Holmes, son Dan and son-in-law Ross, business is booming. They are the market leaders and currently on track to double their takings this year. But as sales rocket, relationships are put under pressure and tensions begin to show. Hot Tub Britain delves deep into the frothy world of hot tubs, hearing from contented customers about why they love their spas and what they get up to in them and going behind the scenes as the firm works hard to keep up with the huge demand for these luxury tubs. Ross, a former Royal Marine has been selling hot tubs for almost a decade and knows every trick in the book. Ross says: “Everyone in sales will know it’s about nailing a hat on. It’s about somebody coming and having a look and it’s not pressured but you need a deposit out of somebody.” But the customers don’t need much persuasion, over the last two years the sales at the Hot Tub Superstore have gone through the roof and the firm is currently selling a million pounds worth of spas a month. Ross says: “We are officially bonkers busy. We are the Tesco or the Sainsbury’s of the hot tub market. We rack and stack ‘em and pop them out the door and I like to think we do a bloody good job.”

Wilderness Walks with Ray Mears ITV1, 19.00

“I have explored some of the wildest places on earth but my favourite is still Britain.” - Ray Mears This new ITV factual series follows bushcraft expert Ray Mears as he journeys through some of Britain’s most spectacular and diverse landscapes. In Wilderness Walks, Ray takes viewers on a trail of discovery along rivers, through forests and across mountains as he searches for some of our greatest natural treasures. Ray travels from dawn to dusk to explore each unique habitat and the incredible wildlife that exists there. In each episode, Ray visits a different place, each with its own character. In episode one, Ray returns to one of his favourite and wildest places in Britain, Dartmoor, travelling across granite peaks and mysterious oak forests, searching for the country’s largest ground beetle and the elusive wood warbler. He also visits High Willhays, the highest point in the National Park, and explains its rugged appeal. He says: “Today the view is spectacular. I love coming here – there’s a tremendous sense of expansiveness – there’s always a wind and it’s challenging – I like that.”

Scott & Bailey ITV1, 21.00 Suranne Jones and Lesley Sharp have returned to their roles as inspiring crime-fighting team, Scott & Bailey. Amelia Bullmore reprises her role as plain-speaking DCI Gill Murray who keeps control of Syndicate 9 and ensures the team delivers in spite of the pressures of modern day policing. Battle-scarred from their shocking conflict last series, Rachel (Suranne Jones) and Janet (Lesley Sharp) determine to move forward with focus and honesty. For Rachel, that means giving her career her best shot, unencumbered by the chaos of her personal life. For Janet, it means giving herself the opportunities she deserves, and enjoying her autonomy. In this spirit, both Scott and Bailey find themselves in front of the promotion board, interviewing for Sergeant. When both pass with flying colours, the task falls to DCI Gill Murray (Amelia Bullmore) to choose which one stays on as Sergeant at Syndicate 9. The story of the week involves the kidnap and murder of a vulnerable young adult, Robin McKendrick. When Robin doesn’t turn up at the pub for work on payday, his ex-copper landlord alerts the police. With a brother involved in local gang rivalry, there’s a chance that Robin has been caught up in some sort of reprisal. When a photo of Robin, bound and gagged in the boot of a car, shows up on Facebook, Syndicate 9 know that he’s probably already dead. But the body they recover from a flooded quarry is a woman.

Paul O’Grady: For The Love Of Dogs ITV1, 20.30 Paul O’Grady is back at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, meeting the latest residents that need treatment, training and ultimately new homes. In this new eleven part series, Paul visits homes at Brands Hatch in Kent and Old Windsor in Berkshire as well as the iconic Battersea site, meeting the happy-go-lucky dogs as well as those dogs that are lucky to be alive. As always Paul helps to care for the canines, feeding them, walking them and accompanying them during treatment. He learns about how each dog ended up in the home, hearing stories that are heart-warming as well as heart breaking. Across the series, Paul meets a variety of dogs including a Bulldog called Lola with a bad eye, an old Shih Tzu with a multitude of health problems, a dog called Whisper who is too scared to leave her kennel and a Bullmastiff that is rehomed to Denmark. In the second programme, Paul meets a Shih Tzu with wobbly back legs, a Bulldog with a bad eye and a Lurcher who is in terrible state after being severely neglected. Lola the Bulldog is four years old. She ended up in Battersea Dogs & Cats Home as her owners couldn’t cope with her boisterous nature. When Paul meets Lola, she isn’t looking her best as she is suffering from a condition called cherry eye in her left eye. The condition is common in Bulldogs and causes part of the eye to bulge out in an unsightly manner. It can also lead to a nasty infection so Lola must have an operation to correct the problem.

Who Do You Think You Are? Mary Berry BBC1, 21.00

Mary Berry is one of Britain’s best loved TV cooks. She has worked as a food writer since the 1960s and now her role as a judge on The Great British Bake Off has catapulted her to national stardom. Mary pushes herself, probably much more than other people of 79, and she wants to know where her energy and drive come from. Mary’s journey starts in Bath, where she grew up, and takes her to Norwich, where both her grandparents lived. She discovers that hiding in her family tree is a bankrupt book-binder, a self-motivated corsetmaker and someone with a profession a bit closer to home. Mary Berry says: “I am lucky. You know, when I get up in the morning, I can’t wait to get going, I love what I do and I want to do it well. “I know very little about my family, but I strongly believe that genes come through. I think I’ve got qualities from Dad, who had enormous energy - I’ve got no idea where Daddy got his drive. I really want to find out. Further back, I think they would have been a respectable family, they would have gone into the traditional jobs and the girls would be groomed for marriage. I can’t wait. I mean, it’s really exciting.”

By Jamie Drew NOMINATIONS for next month’s TEAS closed at midnight last night (Thursday), which leaves us with an anxious one-week wait to find out who have been voted through to the finals.

The number of nominees in each category will differ because some have many more than others. The official line is: “The nominees are being announced on Thursday 11th September on Oasis Fm. The top four nominees (or 40% if more than 12 people are nominated in a category), will be eligible to be voted for.” The TEAs’ website has a full guide as to how the nomination process works, along with every other aspect of the awards. A lot of frequently-asked questions can be answered by a quick visit to www. teaawards.com It is always a nervous time for those entertainers who have spent time advertising and promoting the awards - and themselves as artistes - on their own social networks. Some have chosen to post once at the beginning of the nominations and others a little more. Many will remember the last two years and how Facebook was taken over by requests for nominations and votes. This year, although it is still prominent, Facebook has been rather quiet. Personally, I have seen only a few artistes, requesting politely, for nominations on social networks, and it certainly hasn’t been as intrusive as previous years. The TEAs have had to go through the transition of incorporating Facebook and other social networks into their promotion. As an entertainment scene, Tenerife has had to do the same. This year seems very differ-

39 CW

TEAs’ finalists are on the way

ent and, because of the negative effect on an artiste’s credibility caused by over-promotion, attitudes are different towards the award itself. Surely the award will be more coveted if it is received without selfpromotion. That said, artistes here in Tenerife do not have big companies promoting them. They get their work by visiting bars and doing what they do best: getting on stage and showing the audience what they can do. Artistes pay for professional photographers to produce posters and publicity material. Then they deliver that publicity without media and press wanting to cover the story. It is all about finding the balance and not over-doing the promo. Let’s not get too involved in individual awards. The TEAs serve to promote Tenerife’s entertainment scene, and do so much more

now that social networks are more active than ever. Any entertainer who has spent time on this Island should be proud to be a part of all the grandeur of the TEAs and what they promote. I would like to tip my hat to Cy Benson this week. Cy (pictured) has won more awards than anyone - and most before the birth of computers, never mind Facebook! He has also won the Outstanding Contribution Award, which is an accolade richly deserved because Cy is a true professional on stage and a gentleman off it. When I came here at the turn of the millennium, his name was given to me by numerous people I worked with in the UK. They all spoke of how he had helped them in some way or another with their work over the years. Cy was the first person I sought out

here and those who had mentioned his name to me were spot-on. He put me at ease and helped me sort out the legalities of working here, and also made sure my name was out there. I wouldn’t have had such a great start here but for him. It was a fine example set to me by someone well-established here in Tenerife.

Entertainers with more experience should help new artistes here and remember that they were once new to the game. Self-promotion is so much different than it was a decade ago, but just as necessary. This year, it will be extremely interesting to see who comes out on top in the nominations.

We have one of the most diverse entertainment scenes, packed with talent, and I hope everyone is looking forward to the Awards, on 12th October. Don’t forget to listen to Oasis Fm on Thursday to find out who has been nominated in the 8th annual Tenerife Entertainment Awards.

Health & Home

By Val Sainsbury S C I E NT I S T S have come with a device which, one day, may enable patients to carry out lifesaving heart tests at home using a webcam.

A new procedure being developed, which includes a 15-second face scan, is capable of detecting tiny changes in skin colour. Data gathered from the scan will help doctors determine whether patients are suffering from an irregular heartbeat. With the help of a webcam and new software, the test can detect atrial fibrillation (AF), which is a treatable but potentially dangerous heart

5th September 2014 - 11th September 2014

Webcam may be life-saver

condition, characterised by irregular heartbeat. The technology records the subtle changes in skin colour which occur because of uneven blood flow caused by AF. These changes are so slight that they are invisible to the naked eye. However, the skin on the face is thinner than other parts of the body and blood vessels are closer to the surface, so this is the ideal place to detect AF, say researchers. AF is one of the most common heart-rhythm problems, affecting up to 800,000 people in the UK. It raises the risk of stroke significantly because it means the upper chambers of the

heart do not pump efficiently, so, potentially, could cause blood clots. A normal heart-rate should be between 60 and 100 beats a minute when at rest. But in atrial fibrillation, the heart-rate may be over 140 beats. In extreme cases, the condition can cause heart failure - and it has also been linked to Alzheimer’s disease by reducing blood flow to the brain. The technology was developed by the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, in conjunction with Xerox. Dr Jean-Philippe Couderc, of America’s Rochester University, said the new technolo-

gy means AF can be diagnosed without hooking the patient up to an electrocardiogram (ECG) machine, as is necessary now. “This technology holds the potential to identify and diagnose cardiac disease, using contactless video monitoring,” he said. “This is a simple concept, but one that could enable more people with atrial fibrillation to get the care they need.” The technology works because sensors in digital cameras record the different wavelengths of light: red, green, and blue. Haemoglobin - a component of blood – “absorbs” more of the green spectrum of light, and this subtle change

can be detected by the camera’s sensor. So the camera can detect the uneven blood flow caused by AF by detecting higher levels of haemoglobin. Scientists were able to verify the technology was working accurately by hooking patients up to an electrocardiogram (ECG) simultaneously, so results from the facial scan could be compared with the actual electrical activity of the heart. The study, published online in the journal Heart Rhythm, found that the colour changes picked up by video monitoring corresponded with an individual’s heartrate as detected on an ECG. It also found that the

video-monitoring technique, dubbed “videoplethymography” by researchers, had an error rate of 20%, compared with the 17-29% error rate associated with automated ECG measurements. Researchers are now evaluating the technology on a larger study population, including those without atrial fibrillation. However, Dr Couderc said the technology could be developed to be more accurate and accessible. He added: “This study was intended to be a proof of concept and, as is the case with many new technologies, we believe we can improve its accuracy and the usability significantly.”

Don’t bank on the boys! PARENTS hoping their children will care for them in old age may be better off having daughters.

At least, that’s what researchers claim with sons doing as little as possible. .According to a study, daughters provide an average of 12.3 hours of elderly parent care per month, while sons give just 5.6 hours.

The report’s author, Angelina Grigoryeva, from Princeton University in New Jersey, said: “Whereas the amount of elderly parent care daughters provide is associated with constraints they face, such as employment or childcare, sons’ care-giving is associated only with the presence or absence of other helpers, such as sisters or a parent’s spouse. “Daughters spend

twice as much time, or almost seven more hours each month, providing care to elderly parents than sons.” The study also indicates, in the division of elderly parent care among brothers and sisters in mixed-sex sibling groups, gender is the single most important factor in the amount of assistance each sibling provides. Dr Grigoryeva added: “Sons reduce their relative care-giving efforts when they have a sister, while daughters increase theirs when they have a brother. “This suggests that sons pass on parent care-giving responsibilities to their sisters.” The paper relies on data from the 2004 University of Michigan Health and Retirement Study, which accounted for more than 26,000 Americans over the age of 50 every two years. Dr Grigoryeva believes that understanding gender inequality in

care for elderly parents is important because of the impact it has on the lives of those who take on the task. “Numerous empirical studies report negative mental and physical health consequences, including a higher mortality rate, for people who provide care for elderly family members,” she said.

“In addition, these care-givers often have to balance elder care with employment, potentially resulting in career sacrifices and lower earnings. “Providing care for elderly relatives can also impose significant financial burdens on care-givers in the form of direct expenses, as they often pay for

goods and services for their care recipients.” The doctor added: “My study shows that gender inequality remains acute when it comes to elderly parent care.” She will be presenting her research shortly at the 109th Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association.

By Ruth Benson PRIMARK has been under scrutiny recently because of its mannequin with “protruding ribs”.

The high street retailer received complaints after the mannequin was displayed in its Glasgow store. After the initial tweet was shared 1,400 times, the group responded by saying: “The mannequin you described will not be used in this way again.” Primark is not the first to be in trouble because earlier in the year, luxury lingerie label La Perla received complaints in its New York store following a similar incident. Zara and Mango have also had issues with mannequins and, in 2007, the groups agreed to not display models smaller than a size 6. This to me is unbelievable because mannequins need to display all shapes and sizes. Last November, I

IT’S TRUE! SIZE DOES MATTER…

wrote about how Debenhams had started to use true mannequins, reflecting all sizes from 8 up to 18. The fashion industry receives a lot of bad press on body image and its perception, especially to young people. But in recent years, we have seen more “real women” in advertising, and catwalks have certainly moved in this direction, thanks to designers such as Jean Paul Gaultier. Another campaign this summer hitting social media has been #Fatkini. The idea is to inspire women not to feel ashamed to wear a bikini, and it has been spreading rapidly on Instagram and Tumblr. The trend was started by beauty and fashion plus-size blogger Gabi Fresh, who has her own swimwear line called Swimwear for All, which has sizes from 10 to 24. In 2012 she started her campaign by posting: “I truly encourage you guys to get to the beach or pool - don’t

let body shape keep you from having a good time, I don’t expect all of you to feel comfortable in a two-piece but, hopefully, I can inspire some of you to take the plunge.” Social media has made a big impact by encouraging stores to sell bikinis in bigger sizes. High street stores Forever 21 and ASOS have launched low-cost lines for bigger sizes. And many women have responded by embracing their shape and size by the rise of selfies, #Fatkini and #losehatenotweight. I am all for men and women feeling comfortable with their bodies, be they small or large, and their choice of what to wear should not be dictated by others but by themselves. With that in mind, I say “hear, hear” to those wanting to wear what they want. However, I still stick to my guns with Speedos because no one looks good in them not even my beefcake of a husband!

This comes as standard to all our clients because it is up to us to make sure that once you’re out of the salon and at home, you will continue looking after your hair. We don’t want you returning to find that you have gone astray somewhere and let your hair down. Here is some of the advice we give out to clients while attending to their every hair whim. The basics always start with your shampoo conditioner and treatments. A good shampoo and conditioner are the building blocks to any style. Supermarket brands rarely do the trick and, without naming names, always buy the best you can afford - never some bubblebath put out as shampoo. Your conditioner should replace what you have taken out since the last time you washed your hair, as does applying a masque regularly if needed. Once it is clean and still damp, towel-blot your hair and squeeze out the excess water. Never rub at your hair with the towel as this causes tangles and breakage.

Tease out any tangles with a wide, flexible brush - yes a brush and never a comb because this will tear your hair. The best one to use on any length is a flatbacked paddle brush, which will remove your knots and prepare your hair for the next stage your blow dry. Please don’t dry your hair from wet-through because this takes longer and adds no benefit to your styling technique. Instead, dry hair off roughly until it’s 90% dry, and then start to style. Better still, leave it to dry on its own until barely damp, then start. Your hair will be just as bouncy but less damaged. The less heat you use on it, the better. If you’re going to use any heated styling aids, such as tongs or straighteners, always use a hair-protection spray. This will give your hair the defence it needs, smoothing

down and locking in moisture. Going without this will literally fry your hair, causing irreparable damage. If you are colouring your hair, try to leave it to the professionals. I’ve seen more hair ruined by over-colouring than any other hair problem. If you don’t want to go through the upkeep of roots, then don’t start with hair colours. There isn’t a magic solution to remove hair tint. Once you start, there’s no going back, normally. But the results are usually worth it. If there’s one thing us stylists hate to hear is when a client, new or old, hasn’t had a haircut for months. One client told me recently that in the UK, she had her haircut every eight weeks, but she’d left it nine months while living here. Come on ladies, give your hair the care it deserves and try to keep up with it. After all, it’s one of the first things we see about you. Don’t let it be the thing that lets you down. Let us talk about it in a good way. And one last thing: if, and I say IF you’re going to take your hair up, please, please don’t let it be with an elastic band. There are so many simple hair ornaments out there, and anything too tight will pull and break your hair. So don’t be a naughty client. Be a good, hair-loving one. Follow our free advice and you, too, will have hair that everyone’s talking about.

By Monica Dyson A RECENT survey by exchange specialist Travelex has revealed that more than £16 million is wasted on useless holiday “tat”.

It is brought back home from trips abroad, either as souvenirs of the holiday or as presents. I can certainly remember the days when, though my family couldn’t afford to travel abroad, those relatives or friends who did kindly present my sister and me with straw donkeys, wooden back-scratchers, sombreros and Spanish fans or dolls, which decorated our bedrooms, gathering dust, until our mother threw them out. Once you started to visit Spain yourself, an important part of your décor back home in the

IT’s Last of the summer cards!

Seventies was the empty Chianti bottle which you put a candle in and which you used to inject a bit of cosmopolitan glamour and exotica into your Vesta Paella suppers, imagining that you were actually back in Lloret de Mar! And how many people have a copy of Y Viva Espana somewhere? You weren’t actually immune from holiday “tat” if you holidayed in England. Many a sideboard displayed objects like lurid birds, or boxes covered in small sea shells. It was requisite that you brought presents back from holiday. An aunt of mine actually brought all hers at home before she went away. “Saves time,” she explained. At least no one got a wooden backscratcher! One of the most important things about holidays for decades was the sending of postcards. It was almost a

religion. The first day of holiday was always spent purchasing and writing a couple of dozen cards. No matter that, if in England, the weather could change dramatically the next day, and the holiday completely deteriorate; or, if you were abroad, the likelihood of the cards reaching the UK before you returned was slim, at least you had completed

the most important of all holiday tasks: sending the postcards! Forty years ago, onethird of all Brits sent postcards home from their holidays, but few do today. One of the main reasons is the use of technology. If on holiday, no matter where you are in the world, people walk round glued to their mobile phones or tablets. They are sending daily texts, just as they do at home, with a steady succession of holidaymakers who would previously have been looking for postcard shops, seeking out the best place to get free Wi-Fi. I saw a bar while on holiday this year with a sign outside saying: “We do not have free Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi of any sort. Why not come in and actually talk to people?’ It’s also a fact that no longer is it the norm for people to take one holiday a year. Many have two or three foreign or UK breaks, taking their mobile phones with them. When I was young, postcards were a part of our holiday for my sister

and me as far as providing interesting reading matter. The best ones were always the cheeky ones featuring buxom blondes, hen-pecked husbands or jolly drunks with red noses! We didn’t always understand the humour, and we certainly didn’t ask our parents what they meant. But they were much more interesting than views of Blackpool. In fact, the saucy postcards, laden with double-entendres and sexual innuendo and like much of the humour of comedians of the day, were tame by today’s standards. There are still saucy postcards on sale in seaside resorts, despite complaints from some people that they have no place in family resorts. But others view them as part of British seaside history. You can’t please everyone because there have been frequent comments about postcards with scenic views which make Skegness look like the French Riviera! And a spokesperson from leading UK postcard manufacturer Bamforths said that

while they never published anything obscene, the more vulgar the humour, the better it sold - so it was obviously what the public wanted! Bamforths, situated in the lovely little town of Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, started manufacturing saucy postcards in 1910 after enjoying some success in the silent monochrome film industry. For nearly 100 years, the postcards were part of British life until they entered a period of decline. The sending of postcards lost its popularity and the company officially closed in 1990. Bamforths were originally the leading producers of magic-lantern slides and enjoyed the reputation of being the “British Hollywood” of silent films. With a lack of professional actors, they used local people in their productions, the biggest star being Reginald Twisk, who played a Chaplin-like character called Winky. When war broke out in 1914, the film-making came to an end and they concentrated on producing tens of thousands of cards, to be sent by women to their sweethearts at the front, together with military hymn and song cards. Most people today associate Holmfirth with TV’s The Last of the Summer Wine, and I’m sure Compo, in particular, would have loved the saucy postcards! But its film-making industry goes back much further than that, giving Holmfirth a very important place in Yorkshire history.

Accion del Sol news

The only way to ensure a dumped dog’s safety! THE main goal of the refuge since opening in Granadilla eight years ago has been to reduce the number of dogs abandoned on the streets of Tenerife.

That is why staff have accepted the official rules and regulations, reaching agreements with Tenerife Cabildo and its various municipalities in the South of Tenerife. The centre’s aim is to press forward towards responsible management and animal protection by both parties. Collection procedure: The local police notify the collector and arrange the collection of the abandoned dog. The Civil Protection, or the probation officer, picks up the animal and transports it in a specially-adapted dog collection box to the shelter. On arrival, the dog is issued with a serial number for registration and documented. Three copies are made and all are signed and sealed by the manager/ centre veterinarian The official document states the meeting site, date, time, race, sex and colour of the dog. The dog collector will also take a picture of the animal for the document, and will check with a microchip reader to see whether it has been chipped. If the animal has a microchip, the owner will be notified immediately. He/she then has 21 days to remove the animal from the centre, after passing through the local police or Town Hall and showing the relevant documents. If, after 21 days, the dog is not claimed, the dog will be held in the custody of the shelter. If the owner has not registered a “lost pet” complaint at the local police, he/she faces a substantial fine. Who holds the regis-

not obligated to accept pets which are no longer cherished by their owners.” “Although this sometimes causes arguments with people who want to abandon dogs at the shelter, there can be no exceptions to this rule. “The refuge takes in only those animals which have been abandoned in those municipalities where there is an agreement with the Town Council.” Marion adds: “We have never said we can solve the global problem on this Island. We simply want to be an example of how you could take the issue of animal protection from the authorities and other protectors. “As some municipalities receive Government payments, it is our duty to comply with the agreements. Naturally, this also includes crimes of mistreatment. “We all need to work tered document? One copy stays in the shelter, the local police have another, while the third goes to the relevant Town Hall. Although the Accion del Sol shelter can house up to 200 animals and is regarded as one of the largest refuges in Tenerife, there is insufficient space for all the stray dogs. That means there are strict controls in place, which are necessary to prevent overcrowding, and they enable staff to maintain the relevant standards of animal protection and welfare. For that reason Marion Gonzalez, who runs Accion de Sol and is a director of Aktiontier - the German charity which sponsors the refuge - stresses that it is not a place where people can simply offload their pets. “If a person decides to have an animal, then he/she must maintain responsibility for the pet’s lifetime,” said Marion. “The refuge is

together without repercussions, and to ensure that people who abandon their pets are punished. “If we fail to do this, then the problem of abandoned and nonneutered dogs will continue.” Please call 922 778 630 for more information, or if you would like to help out in any way. Towels and blankets are always needed for the dogs if you have any to spare. Or perhaps you could walk a dog or two in your spare time! The refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ITER windmills. It is open to the public on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, from 2pm-5pm, and Saturdays from 1pm-4pm. The refuge is closed Wednesdays, Sundays and on public holidays.

Heart-warming slice of Italy If you are looking for a really good, homecooked Italian meal, then Italia Mia is the place to be. We were invited along to the Las Chafiras restaurant to sample their fantastic food, which turned out to be amazing - the finest Italian food we have tried in years! They will also do takeaways and, from this week, they have BBQ food on offer, and have opened a home-made pastry section. We were welcomed with

a glass of sparking Italian wine and given a menu. But we chose to try a little of everything and left it up to them to choose. And what a choice it turned out to be! We had a chat with Marka, from the Calabria region in Southern Italy. She is one of the owners, who has been here since February, and she also does some of the cooking along with Monika in the kitchen, concocting up all their home-made recipes. We were served by Aldo, the attentive wait-

er. They also have Carlo, who wasn’t present but is also part of the ownership. We started with a crispy chicken dish, strips of tender chicken breast with tomato and croutons and sprinkled with oregano. Delicious!

The plates just kept on coming … exquisite, thinly-sliced beef in what can be described as Italian gravy with homemade chips, delicious! And home-made hamburger, where the meat is pressed on the premises. I don’t usually like ham-

burgers, but this one was on another level from how you normally associate hamburgers, and it was so tasty. We then had to sample the pizza as we were in an Italian house of cuisine. We tried the Margherita with tuna, onion and mushrooms, thin, crispy and well past our expectations. In fact, we simply couldn’t finish it all because it was just too large. But again, it was truly delicious! By now, we’d eaten as

much as we could, and thought we could sit back to enjoy the rest of our wine and catch our breath. Oh no! Honestly, we felt as though we would have no room for another crumb when along came something we just could not resist - their homemade recipe of Tiramisu. There was a huge plateful which we fully intended to share. But, sadly, some of this exquisite dish had to go back to the kitchen because there really wasn’t enough room to finish it. If you would like to sample their excellent, authentic food, at reasonable prices, you can either eat inside or on their ample terrace. You can even call in to collect your food. Whatever your choice, you will not be disappointed with Italia Mia, based on the main San Miguel road, just before the turn off down to Ikea. Open every day except Sunday, from 12 noon until late, Italia Mia is your piece of Italy in the heart of Las Chafiras. And it is well worth a visit!

By Jav ALL credit to Renault, who have updated their little Twingo to such an extent that it’s near the top of the city-car table.

In fact, a few more tweaks and it could even rival the fabulous VW Up. But for now, The French car-makers have got themselves a tasty little bundle. This all-new Twingo, the product of a joint project between Renault and Daimler’s Smart brand, features the first new rear-engined Renault since production of the 10 saloon ended in 1971. It is a full 10cm shorter than the outgoing three-door Twingo, but has a 12cm longer wheelbase. And Renault say the rear-engined lay-out has enabled their engineers to push the dashboard further forward. This lengthy cabin, combined with a front passenger seat back which folds forward, allows loads as long as 2.31m long to be fitted inside the Twingo - and that’s some feat! There’s no luggage space under the bonnet - that’s occupied by the radiator and various fluid reservoirs. But not having the engine

47 CW

Twingo is a city cracker!

mounted between the front wheels has greatly improved crash safety, say the company. The Twingo structure’s main safety cage is made of exceptionally high-strength steel, giving the driver and occupants extra protection. Pedestrian protection is also claimed to be much improved because of the amount of free space allowed by the empty nose. Renault engineers have not had to raise the bonnet line to meet the pedestrian protection regulations, which, along with the short nose, gives the driver the best forward view of any car in the A segment.

Perhaps the biggest advantage with the rear-engined lay-out is the ability to enable the Twingo’s front wheels to pivot by 45 degrees off the straight-ahead position - the previous model managed only 30 degrees. The bonus is that the Twingo’s tiny turning circle of just 8.9m is only marginally larger than that of a London black cab. And that’s saying something! At the rear is a re-engineered version of Renault’s familiar threecylinder, turbo-charged petrol engine, and the rear suspension is an unusual De Dion torsion beam design. This engine, like the

69bhp normally-aspirated unit, drives a conventional five-speed manual gearbox. There will be the option of a six-speed, dual-clutch, automatic transmission, but it won’t arrive for another 12 months. Interestingly, though, the engine block can be lowered by 150mm to major servicing that bit easier. Inside, the designers have carved out 52 litres of storage area, including space under the rear seat bench (like the original Mini). But the boot itself offers a limited 188 litres. The seat backs can be locked in a more upright position to stretch

that to 219 litres and, by pushing the rear seat backs forward, you can create a completely level-load bay. Renault admit that this Twingo has been tuned to be as similar to a typical front-drive city car as possible. And even though the car’s weight distribution is balanced 55% rear and 45% front, there’s hardly any feeling that the Twingo is moderately tail-heavy It’s even hard to place the source of the engine’s prominent warbling note when you’re your foot’s hard down. The Twingo’s driving position is higher and more upright than normal, and none the worse

for it. The dash is flat and upright, as are the door panels, and the overall effect makes the cockpit feel quite spacious for such a compact car. That effect is magnified when bowling along at 70mph on the motorway, where the Twingo is quite hushed and feels capable of longer, high-speed, journeys than nearly any other Asegment car. As city cars go, this Twingo is definitely one of the more entertaining options available. It is reasonably brisk and will get better with miles. The interior is genuinely accommodating for such a small car, and the extraordinary turning circle should not be underestimated in everyday use. It is also really well equipped. It gets 15inch alloys, air conditioning, a DAB/Bluetooth sound system, stop-start, front fog lamps, lane departure warning, leather wheel and gear knob, remote locking - and even hillstart assist. Overall, the Twingo TCe 90 is an intriguing model, with a unique engineering package, capable of 65.7mpg with a top speed of 103mph. And for £11,695 it represents good value, in or out of the city!

Be alert when buying or selling a car By Emma at Motorworld

THERE are several important factors to take into account when buying or selling a car in Tenerife.

If you are selling, make sure you obtain a copy of the buyer’s details, such as passport and NIE along with a completed, signed and dated contract-of-sale

purchase (contrato de compra-venta). Should the new owner not transfer the vehicle from your name, this ensures you have documentation to present to Tráfico should any fines arise, or you need to notify them of the sale. If you are selling to a garage or a registered car dealer, they should be able to provide you with a contract quite easily. Also, in most cases, a copy of the contact is required by most insurance companies so they can cancel the existing document on the car. If you are buying a car,

you need to check it is debt-free, because, like property in Spain, the debts already on the car stay with it, even if it is transferred into another person’s name. Cars with embargoes on them can, in some cases, be transferred into the new owner’s name, provided a declaration to say you have been notified of said embargo has been signed. So it is better to be safe than sorry. A debt check will also show if the vehicle is still on finance, or whether it was purchased on finance and the register was never cleared. This doesn’t usually

happen automatically, and the de-registration of the finance must be done via the finance house and the registro de bienes muebles. The debt check will also show whether the car has any previous year’s road tax unpaid, because this prohibits Tráfico from transferring the car. The checks will also show the last kilometres’ reading, taken at the last ITV. This is now a legal requirement at the ITV station and is recorded on the ITV system, regardless of whether the car passes or fails. Once you have checked

the car is debt-free and agreed to go ahead with the purchase, make sure you either have all the relevant paperwork to carry out the transfer yourself, or that you go through a gestor or registered company to ensure the transfer is completed and all the paperwork correct. As the buyer, you would have to obtain a copy of the seller’s passport and Residencia/ NIE or DNI, along with the signed contact or sale-purchase and the signed application form from Tráfico (TASA TRANSMISION). And a receipt for the monies

paid. Once you have the car and the paperwork, then the vehicle will need to be transferred into your name. Firstly, the transmission tax would have to be paid to the tax office and then the car can be transferred into your name in Tráfico. Tráfico need to see the buyer’s original documentation: passport, Residencia/NIE or DNI. In the past, photocopies have been sufficient. Now, however, a transfer cannot and will not be completed unless the originals are provided - and seen by the Tráfico employee!

Clouseaus - not Clueless!

AFTER joining the league as a replacement team, Clouseaus have been finding it a bit tough in Division 1.

They remain rockbottom, but maybe not for much longer. They put in a fine performance against Picasso’s and recorded their second victory of the campaign with a lastgasp trebles-leg success. Onwards and upwards! Emerald Lounge skipper Daz fired in his second 180 during a close 5-3 defeat at the hands of stablemates, Emerald Shamrocks. That result maintains

the Shamrocks’ fivepoint lead over Gaffers A, who just edged out Sundowners. The Playboys moved ominously up into third place after they put six into Pas O Nadas, while Trap Door’s Simon

PRemier division ResultS

fired in his first maximum as his team held on in the last rubber to beat Chipeque. The Division 2 table looks a little different this week after the sad demise of Amistad 2. Chipeque Chippers,

however, are still in pole position and hold a two-point lead with a game in hand. A delighted Nora, of Palms Pool Bar, checked out on 120 during a tricky encounter with The Rebels. In

fact, Palms had to win the trebles leg to claim a draw. The Waterfall enjoyed a fine evening in the company of the Spear Chuckers, and this match also went down to the wire with the Warriors just squeaking home on the final leg. Phoenix Flights have been on a decent run, but they came unstuck at Palms Sports Bar, losing 6-2. With Bar 180 A not playing, we saw yet another lead change in the Premier League. Phoenix Bar took over the baton, for the time being, as they beat Gaffers B, 6-2. But it wasn’t the best advert for darts! In fact, this writer’s 3-2 win

over Gaffers captain Neil took the best part of an hour! Only Mitch managed to lighten the proceedings with his latest maximum. The Pub entertained Target Army and, despite having just four players again, managed to grind out a well-deserved draw. Bar 180 D are hovering just above the relegation zone, but they will be satisfied after taking a handy three points at Target Titans. Meanwhile, over in Los Abrigos, a real nautical battle took place as the Vikings visited the Pirates! They both managed to stay afloat however, and the match ended at four apiece.

Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League

Managers go wild for new teams! WE are now three weeks into the new Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League, and though some are faring better than others. This weekend’s international break gives all managers a chance to scrutinise their teams and maybe make one or two changes. I have heard that one or two have even used wild cards, changing their whole team!

Chelsea led the way in providing players for the point-coring Team of the Week after their attacking display against Everton, with three players making the 11. Swansea, after their excellent unbeaten start, accounted for two, while the rest of the team featured players from, QPR, Liverpool, Stoke, Newcastle, Southampton and Aston Villa.

Top spot in the Oasis Fm League is occupied by the Old Boy! Stephen Snook’s Kingsmead Crunchers lead the way, and it’s strange to see the senior citizen, and long-time player, finally hitting the summit. But it is close, because just 13 points separate the top-10 sides. Team of the Week goes to one-time Tenerife resident Dan Lawton,

whose Dan Utd amassed 66 points in what was a fairly low-scoring week. At Oasis Fm Towers, John Zammit has opened up a 20-point lead over second-place Chris Elkington, with Roscoe running in third spot, Maggie Lennard fourth and, bringing up the rear, Adi Benson. But he’s quietly confident his team will soon start performing.

Oh, what an Atmosphere! WE said last week that this year’s Direct Telecom 8 Ball Pool League will be one of the most competitive yet, and already we are being proved right. Just two games in, and one or two newcomers are starting to make the others around them sit up and take notice. In Division One, for the first time in ages, we have a new name at the top. Gaffers A, last year’s runners-up, hosted new boys Exiles B and gave them a lesson in pool. Exiles managed to win just one frame to avoid a whitewash, but they will have learned what top-flight pool is all about! Exiles A didn’t fare any better, although the scoreline was a little closer, as they welcomed Phoenix Potters to Silencio. The Abrigos OAPs have a secret weapon this season in the form of Berroca, mixed with Werther’s Originals. And this was the difference, as the Potters secured the points. Atmosphere 13, another new team, ensured it was a party with a happy one, with an excellent win over the Peacocks. They flew into a 4-0 lead. This became five, six and the, erm, party atmosphere kicked in when they made it 7-0. Peacocks stole back a few dead rubbers but the Div One new

boys partied into the night! New-look Treehouse A made it two wins from two with a victory over Palms B in a closelyfought affair. But the Treehouse just had that little bit extra in the tank to get over the line. Palms B are new to this division and felt they should have taken at least a point. Terrace Bar A haven’t had a good start to the season. They took on the champions last week and this week faced Dreamers A, who looked likely to run away with it as they moved into a 6-2 lead. But the Terrace lads rallied and got the score back to 6-5. However, Sparky rattled the deciding black, Rich took the gift and finished to take victory by the narrowest of margins. Terrace B will be delighted with their start, but they should have enjoyed a win over The Phoenix. They took a 5-0 lead and were in total control. But a few wayward shots cost them, allowing the Phoenix back into the game, and, after some inspired pool, the game finished 6-6. Elsewhere, the welltouted Waterfall Rebels are taking time to gel as a team. They welcomed Tenerife Hammers C to the bar, but Tony and the boys have learned lessons from last sea-

In the final fixture of the night, Palms A and Inn the Pink A had quite a rumble. It was swinging both ways and at 4-4, the draw was a heavy odds-on shot. But some bad luck for the Palms and some nice finishing from Pink saw the visitors roar home 8-4. Heineken and a very blue Mark had nights to forget for Palms A. In Division Two, Inkspots have taken top spot after an easy win against Sporting Jester B. That makes it two solid wins

and a super start to the season for the new boys. But can they keep the run going? Toscales Wildcards are also two from two. They played their pool in Division One last season and it showed as they had too much class for Treehouse B. Sporting Jester A, who we tipped here as a potential dark horse, are another unbeaten team. This week, they swotted aside Hoppy’s. Picasso’s A have also made an unbeaten start. At times last season they huffed and puffed,

B in Los Cristianos. It was a fairly straightforward night for them as they picked up their first three points, and I expect this to be the first win of many. Waterfall Jokers are certainly not taking this league lightly. Last week they lost out against Sporting Jester A, but this week they turned on the style against Bluebell A, who are expected to do well. But it wasn’t to be on Tuesday night because the Jokers had the last laugh, coming out on top comfortably.

Unlucky Lewis should have biffed team-mate

ANY fair-minded F1 fan would have sympathised with Lewis Hamilton, who was virtually taken out by Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg during the recent Belgium Grand Prix. It appeared to be a deliberate of vandalism by the German, yet he got away with it at an official hearing, even though his team fined him £100,000. Hamilton says Romberg admitted it was a

deliberate move, when he clipped the Brit’s back wheel, puncturing it on lap two. “He said he did it to prove a point,” said the Brit. Hamilton was leading and looking strong, yet he had to limp three miles back to the pits on a punctured tyre, damaging the undercarriage in the process and wrecking his chances. The biggest surprise

was that Hamilton, although just a titch, didn’t batter his socalled team-mate black and blue after the race. You just can’t imagine the hard-and-fast oldtimers, who obeyed a strict code of conduct for the most part, allowing Rosberg to get away with it. There would have been more than just words! You have to feel sorry for Hamilton, who’s a great British racer

- the best put there, surely. Yet time and time again this season, he’s had dreadful luck: tyres bursting, engines catching fire, shunts by other drivers, brakes failing … It can’t just be bad luck, surely, because Rosberg, racing away at the top of the championship table, has had only one mechanical failure all season. Here’s how it happened, and how Hamilton had to

quit a few laps from the end, while Rosberg sailed into second place to extend his lead over his “team-mate” to 29 points. Hamilton jumped into the lead right from the start and looked strong. Rosberg forced his way up into second place, then attempted a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre which ended with him clipping Hamilton’s back tyre. Mercedes say they

will let their two drivers calm down before deciding how to resolve the controversy. Team boss Toto Wolff said: “We will decide what to do when everybody is in a cooler, calmer, frame of mind.” Until now, Mercedes have allowed their drivers to race freely on the proviso that they did not hit each other. The two clash again in Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

A goal, a point and a new hero

THE transfer window has finally closed, and it’s the end of what has been quite a summer in Santa Cruz.

With all the comings and goings, it’s been a little hard to keep tabs on what has gone on! On deadline day, exciting youngster Jairo was shipped out on loan to Real Murcia and it’s a great move for him. Murcia will surely be too strong in the third tier of Spanish football and he will see lots of game time. And for the last squad place, Tenerife again looked to England. Well Mexico. Via West London! Thanks to Cordoba. And (sarcastically), thanks to Wigan. I shall explain. You will remember me explaining last week about the fiasco surrounding the signing of Wigan left-back Garcia. Only he was actually a centre-back, and not a very good one at that. Tenerife tried to send him back to Wigan, but they were having none Position

of it. So he stays. Kinda. You see in Spain, like the UK, you can have only a certain amount of non-EU players. So Garcia was taking up a valuable spot as Tenerife chased another

striker. I say another - they went after a big fish. And boy, did they land him. Uli Davila made himself a Tenerife legend last season when he netted a late, late injury-time goal for Cordo-

ba to deny Las Palmas promotion to La Liga. So who better than the Mexican to come and cover for the injured Ifran? But, as always, there were problems. Davila’s parent club, Chelsea, are keen for him to kick on this season after a good campaign at Cordoba. They had a few offers, including one from a Championship side, rumoured to be Middlesbrough, and a host of clubs in Europe. But from the get go, it seemed Davila would come here. Sometimes, you just feel a transfer, and when the money was sorted out (I’m not sure where from, but sometimes best not to ask) there was only one issue. Was there a space in the squad? And this brought us back to Garcia. So Tenerife worked frantically to get Garcia away. Since he hasn’t actually entered the field of play, he is not “tied” but there were no takers. So Tenerife did the smart

thing and didn’t register him. This means he is here until January. He will continue to train and, by all accounts his attitude is spot-on. And maybe a move to South or Central America can be engineered? On the park, Tenerife finally netted. Aridane’s finish on the hour cancelled out Albacete’s soft opener after another howler from keeper Jacobo. Tenerife probably deserved a win, and there were lots of positives for manager Alvaro Cervera. Suso was like the Duracell bunny. His work-rate is spectacular, I just hope he has the same energy at Girona this weekend. It may just be me, but he is not the same player after he has been on a plane. Albizua was excellent at centre-back. He is old skool and is not going to be pushed around. His partnership with Carlos Ruiz could define the season. Maxi Perez was again a livewire off the bench.

When he settles, he will be dynamite - and it was pleasing to see Vitolo wearing the shirt. He can showboat a bit too much and was twice caught in possession posing. But he is a touch of class and some of his passing was top drawer. I’m not sure he is fully match-fit, and he may be back on the bench against Girona. But he will be a major asset. Girona have started how they finished last season, and we play them twice in the next few days. The Copa Del Rey match on Tuesday could be anything, but the league match before will be tasty. There is no Juanlu Hens for the hosts as he is suspended, which means Ricardo will be the only player on the pitch left from the match that saw us promoted back to La Liga in Girona a few years ago. Girona were excellent at Alcorcon last week and they look nailed on to be around the playoffs at the end of the season.
