Spain’s Bright future! Continued from front page. Luis Maria Linde, Governor of the Bank of Spain (pictured below), said the economy would expand by 2% in the final quarter of 2014. This is a mammoth jump - and proof that the recovery plan is working. Linde made the statement after assessing the 2015 General State Budget. “The economy’s growth rate year-onyear is pleasing,” he said. “The domestic product comes close to 2% in the last quarter a rate at which shows that the Spanish economy will continue to grow at that rate in the whole of 2015.” With the country trading its way out of trouble, the green shoots of recovery are sprouting up everywhere. The Spanish National Statistics Institute this week unveiled its latest figures, which show that Spanish residential mortgages rose 29% in July, compared with a year ago. An official said: “The economic growth has made home-buyers more confident.” And the figures backed him up. A total of 18,107 mortgages were granted, up from 14,055 a year earlier.
And the sum of money lent to home-buyers climbed 13% to 3.2bn euros. Jose Luis Martinez Campuzano,of Citigroup, said: “Financial conditions are improving, confidence is also improving and pent-up demand is now starting to appear.” Just two years after applying for a European Union rescue, Spain has become one of the fastest-growing euro-area economies as exports surge and investment rebounds. There was more good
news on Wednesday. Unemployment in Spain is down again - and in the Canary Islands it is nearly 7% lower than in 2013. All this healthy news comes off the back a well-received budget proposal for 2015. Dubbed “The People’s Budget”, the document supports growth, job creation and social cohesion - and is returning to the people part of the effort made by them to help exit the crisis. That was the Government’s positive news
as its blueprint for the next 12 months was unveiled. The economy, said Vice-President Soraya Sáenz de Santamarí, will grow by 1.2% next year - 622,000 jobs will be created over the two years, and the unemployment rate will drop to 22.2% by the end of 2015. The Vice-President also said: “The Draft General State Budget for 2015 sets the lines for the development of the Spanish economy, at a time when we have overcome the recession and are laying the foundations for recovery, and to consolidate growth.” She believes the Budget, this Government’s fourth, is the budget of “consolidation, recovery and job creation”, and “is in line with the policy carried out by the Government since it came to power”. The Vice-President added: “We have gone from being a problem to being the country enjoying the highest growth in the Eurozone. And we stand as an example at many international forums, thanks to the reforms carried out.” She explained that the approved accounts emphasise issues such as the public administration - “a sector that has borne a good part of the brunt of the adjustments, which should be acknowledged” to maintain quality services. Under the investment heading, she said: “The priority broad strokes and actions have been
set out to modernise the productive fabric, training and speed growth, and job creation.” The Vice-President also announced that the Budget included investments for the Plan to Drive Growth, Competitiveness and Efficiency (CRECE), which lays special emphasis on youth unemployment, driving investment in business, the flow of credit and environmental measures, particularly energy savings and water treatment. Cristóbal Montoro, Minister for the Treasury and Public Administration Services, highlighted that this budget was marked by the tax reform and reduction in taxes. The Minister specified that the deficit of the public administration services as a whole will stand at 5.5% of GDP this year, and will close 2015 at 4.2%. From then, the target is to return to budget stability as soon as possible. Of this 4.2%, some 2.9% corresponds to central government, 0.7% to the regional governments and 0.6% to the social security system. And the local authorities must reduce their deficit to zero he added. Montoro stressed that the Budget did not provide for an increase in the tax burden, saying: “What is provided for is an increase in revenue from expanding tax bases”, as a result of the recovery in consumption, tied to the improved economic situation. Pensions and the interprofessional minimum wage will not be frozen, said the Minister. On the contrary, their purchasing power will be favoured by zero inflation, such as at present, and by the personal income tax reduction. The Government approved the macro-economic 2014-2015 chart, which contains an upward revision of the forecasts for the two years. Growth of 1.3% is forecast for 2014, one10th higher than the forecast in April, and 2% for 2015, two-10ths higher. Luis de Guindos, Minister for Economic Affairs and Competi-
tion, clarified that the macro-economic chart foresees a slowdown in the global and European economy, includes lower interest rates, the depreciation of the euro against the US dollar and lower prices of raw materials. Against this backdrop, de Guindos added: “Spain is starting to grow differentially in comparison with the Eurozone for the second consecutive year.” The Minister attributed this improvement to the strength of domestic demand, and to the increased flow of credit. Hence, household consumption will grow by 2% in 2014 and by 2.1% next year. Furthermore, the construction industry will, in 2015, contribute positively to economic growth for the first time. Regarding inflation, the Economic Affairs Minister said it would remain moderate. “These have been two years of positive, balanced growth, with inflation close to zero, with a foreign trade surplus and, hence, a reduction in private debt and external debt,” he said. “These are two years in which we are not only speeding up economic growth but also correcting the imbalances in our economy.” The macro-economic chart contains an improved job-growth forecast. In national accounting terms, the unemployment rate fell from 26.1% in 2013 to 22.9% in 2015, a lower rate than at the end of the last legislature. “If we look at this legislature as a whole, unemployment will fall by more than 200,000 people in these four years,” emphasised the Minister. “And the unemployment rate will also stand at 4-10ths of a decimal point lower than when we came to office in the fourth quarter of 2011.” This week’s exciting news, and a bullish budget, shows that the Spanish Government has got to grips with the “crisis”. There is clearly a lot of work to do still, but it appears that the country is heading in the right direction.

Invest in us, Rajoy tells Chinese leaders
Spain’s Shanghai
“SPAIN is a country with a great future that is worth investing in,” said Mariano Rajoy during his first official visit to the People’s Republic of China.
The Spanish PM visited a number of major cities, met key business leaders and enjoyed a “successful” few days as he stepped up economic and trade relations between the two countries. In Shanghai, where he gave the keynote speech at the SpainChina Business Forum, the PM asserted that the economic aspect “plays a particularly important role in the excellent bilateral relations with China”. This trip, he added, speaking to major business leaders and executives from the two countries, takes place at a “particularly apt time, since after almost three years of intense work under a reformist agenda, Spain has turned the situation around and is growing, creating jobs, exporting, investing, and doing so in a sustained and sustainable manner”. Three years ago, he recalled, there were “grave concerns surrounding Spain and the effects the crisis could have on the Eurozone”. He added: “But today, in contrast, there is great consensus regarding the idea that Spain is a country with a great future that is worth investing in.” Rajoy highlighted that the Spanish economy has the Eurozone’s highest growth in the second quarter of 2014; it is creating jobs for the first time in six years and has recorded a foreign trade surplus, which had not happened since 1998. The Spanish PM also stressed that Spain had met the public deficit targets for the last two years and pointed out: “It will do so again this year. These figures are particularly positive when you consider the background
surprise
of stagnation in which Europe as a whole finds itself. We have tripled average EU quarterly growth.” The PM also placed great emphasis on the fact that the economy continues to grow “with greater rigour”, as can be seen in the upward revision of the forecasts for Spain by international bodies and in the growing interest of foreign investment. Rajoy attributed this change of direction in the Spanish economy to the “results of the collective effort made by the Spanish people, its companies, workers and taxpayers, as well as of the public administration through reform programmes hitherto unseen in Spain’s recent past”. Apart from recovering economic stability and increasing competitiveness, the Government is seeking to step up relations with the most dynamic economies in the world, and there are few as dynamic as the Chinese economy, said the PM. “This is precisely the reason behind initiatives like this: seeking new opportunities, trying to increase exchanges and, above all, avoiding their restriction”. Rajoy declared his intention “for political dialogue between the European Union and China to create a favorable environment
for trade and growth, by finding negotiated solutions to possible conflicts”. The PM pointed out that Spanish exports to China have doubled since 2009, and that the Asian country is our third leading supplier, behind Germany and France only. Among the opportunities offered by China to Spanish companies, he mentioned sectors such as infrastructures, environment and energy. In turn, he said: “Spain is highly attractive for Chinese investment. Few countries other than Spain can offer such good investment opportunities in such an open and competitive environment.” Rajoy argued that “our country is a natural gateway to Europe, Latin America and even the Maghreb”. After closing the business forum, organised by ICEX (Spanish Institute of Foreign Trade), the Prime Minister visited the historic centre of Shanghai, on the banks of Huangpu River, opposite the city’s financial centre. He also held a meeting with the city’s Mayor, Yang Xiong, before travelling to Beijing to meet up with the Premier of the People’s Republic of China, Li Keqiang at the Great Hall of the People. Afterwards, Rajoy and the Chinese Premier pre-
sided over the signing of various co-operation agreements in such sectors as agriculture, energy, telecommunications, finance and tourism. The heads of both governments signed a bilateral agreement to strengthen and promote the cinema industry in the two countries. They also agreed to hold periodic work meetings in the fight against organised crime. “Other countries have a changed perception of Spain,” said Rajoy. And he insisted, during a meeting with Spanish business leaders in Beijing, that support for the internationalisation of companies is one of the main pillars of this government’s policy”. The trips I make and the visits I receive are always an opportunity
to help companies,” he said. “In the same way as our business leaders, the Government appreciates the opportunities offered by the foreign trade sector”. “The economic reforms we have been implementing for almost three years have sought, at all times, to drive the internationalisation of our productive fabric and drive competitiveness.” According to the PM: “These reforms have not been easy, but they are starting to bear fruit in terms of growth and job creation, when there are some European countries still in recession.” Rajoy also said: “There is a changed perception of Spain from abroad, reflected in the risk premium and the investment figures in Spain, which is also perceived by China, as I have been able to witness at my meetings. At the meeting held last Thursday with the Chinese Premier, the two leaders agreed that economic and trade relations, and investment “should all be stepped up; the conditions ought to be established to achieve this and that Spain, in particular, offers major opportunities for collaboration”, said Rajoy. He reiterated that bilateral relations were “very good”, and that they benefit from a
sound, legal framework and the mutual interest of the citizens of both countries. “In short, there are solid foundations for business between the two countries to be developed, and this can also be done with the protection of our institutions, and with the support of this Government, for which work in this area is a top priority.” Rajoy described China as a “benchmark market” and its economy as “the most dynamic in the world”. He also recalled that Spanish exports to this country had doubled in value since 2009, an upward trend also enjoyed by investment. “The Spanish export and investment base is increasingly extensive, but we want to go beyond that,” he said. “There is an important change in attitude in relation to such competitive markets as this one, and instead of seeing this as a threat, we now see this as an opportunity,” he underlined. The aim is for more Spanish companies to work in China, he said. “But we also want to see more Chinese investment in Spain and, in this regard, multiple alliances are taking place between companies from both countries that will help create new business opportunities.” Before the meeting with Spanish business leaders, the Spanish PM visited the Forbidden City in Beijing - the first Spanish head to do so.

Felipe 1st US trip …the King and O! KING Felipe VI, Spain’s new monarch, has delivered his first international address since being crowned - and he also met Barack Obama for the first time.
The King spoke about climate change at the United Nations in New York, and had a private, half-hour meeting with the US President, reiterating his desire for both countries to continue working together on the “international challenges” facing them. The two leaders came together at the Waldorf Astoria, where Obama was staying to attend the 69th General Assembly of the United Nations. “It was their first contact, and a show of deference by Obama,” said a Spanish official. Their conversation touched on politics, international conflicts, economics and culture, said US sources. And Obama emphasised the monarch’s role in the “close ties” between America and Spain.
The meeting confirmed Obama’s interest in working with the new head of an allied country at a time filled with difficult challenges. These include the Islamic State’s terrorist threat, the tension with Russia over Ukraine, the ebola health crisis and climate change. King Felipe said: It was truly an honour for me to speak for the first time as King of Spain at the UN.” Earlier, at UN headquarters, he delivered a speech on the urgency of implementing measures to fight climate change. “This common challenge has acquired greater urgency,” he told assembled representatives. “It poses a threat to the basic equilibrium that makes life possible, and gives continuity to our civilisation - and this forces us to act decisively.” The King added: “I belong to a generation which was inspired by the sight of a small, blue, fragile-looking planet in a picture taken by the pioneers of the space race. “The impact of that first vision of Earth from outer space made
us understand that, above and beyond our differences, we share the same home and face common challenges.” Spain is also vying for a seat at the UN Security Council in 2015 and 2016. A decision will be made this month, and Felipe VI was drumming up support for the Spanish candidacy while in New York.

Walkies again in Adeje ADEJE Youth Centre is the headquarters for the borough’s second dog training course, which will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8pm in Spanish.
Oil question to be asked next month PAULINO Rivero, Canarian Government President, will hold a referendum on the oil situation in the Canary Islands on 23rd November.
Repsol is scheduled to begin oil exploration off the eastern islands in a couple of weeks, despite local concerns. What is being dubbed as “the Rivero Referendum” - the public vote in November - holds no legal or political water. “Do you think we should change the Canary tourism model for environmental surveys and gas or oil exploration?” That is the wording of the question Rivero wants to pose. The vote will be open to all residents who are 17 and over, who sign the registration of citizen participation. The public consultation is convened under the Law of Citizen Participation in the Canaries, passed in 2010, but this is just a cosmetic law. The Spanish Government has voted on this and the country’s law courts have also de-
creed that exploration can take place. Since Rivero leaves office in a few months and he is effectively a “lame duck” politician, he is pressing ahead. Rivero appeared at a press conference, accompanied by members of the Canarian Government and representatives of local insti-
tutions, political parties and citizen groups. He said, bizarrely: “This is not designed to answer whether we have oil drilling.” Repsol will start drilling about 40 miles east of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura in a few weeks, though preliminary tests have showed there is not as much
oil in the area as first thought. National Industry Minister Jose Manuel Soria said in recent statements that the government would act to stop “Any type of illegal referendum. This matter has been resolved in front of elected members and by the courts”.
Course director is Juan Carlos Gaspar Abreu, a professional dog trainer, and registration is now open. The course begins on 16th October and runs until 16th January next year. Youth Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera said: “Following the huge success of the first course, which was part of the Adeje Clean and Healthy campaign, there was a waiting list of dog-owners who wanted to join up, so we knew we needed a second course.” He added: “The principal objective is that young people (primarily) learn more about their pets, understand their duties as pet owners and, at the same time, learn together - pet and owner - how to behave in a civil, responsible way.” Interested students should call into the Adeje Youth Centre (Casa de la Juventud). To register, you need to be over 16 and to own a dog. More information and payment forms are online at www.adeje.es. The course will be in various phases. The first, from 16th October to 18th November, is theory-based with participants learning about dog behaviour norms and how to interpret its body language, as well as looking at the character-
istics of the different breeds. The second part of the course is also theoretical, with participants learning about licences needed for dog ownership, and the rights and duties of owners. Students will also find out about the Adeje Centre for adopting dogs, which they will visit and take part in a workshop given by a qualified vet. A third theoretical phase will look at training tools, basic behaviour concepts and positives and negatives. The practical section of the course will also begin in October and run until next January. It will teach participants about walking the dog in public, and getting it to listen, wait, etc, particular in public places. The trainer will value individual pet problems and behaviours and work on corrective practices. There will also be lessons in sports adapted for dogs and owners. Registration requirements Dog owners who wish to sign up for the course need certain documents to be in order; the dog needs to be on the Adeje pet census, with the correct health certificates and all vaccinations up to date. If the owner has changed address recently and hasn’t passed that information on to the census office, or town register, he/she needs to do so. Dogs listed among the dangerous breeds must be correctly registered, with all the relevant bodies, and the owner must present a current licence and the necessary insurance.

Genesis Genius!
WE are just a few days away from the Tenerife Entertainment Awards and the big event of the year. If you haven’t got your tickets yet, what are you waiting for? Call 902 232 102 and get yourself organised for the big day. One act who have not been nominated are Genesis. They are a fascinating band. You could make a decent film or maybe a miniseries on the ups and downs of the group over the decades. I’m a little too young to appreciate their Peter Gabriel days, and they didn’t prick my attention until the amazing Invisible Touch album. That CD is still in my car to this day and like most fans, it’s the lesser-known tracks that are the real work of genius. For the older generation, Genesis were never as good without Gabriel, but for me it’s like comparing apples and oranges. Mike and Tony do their
thing brilliantly, but Peter and Phil write and sing in different ways. I mention all this because I urge you to watch a special documentary this weekend on BBC 2. Genesis: Together And Apart reunites the always-forgotten Steve Hackett with the four other members for the first time since 1975. I’m not keen on them recording together again, and I think the past was good enough. I’m not sure, physically or mentally, whether Phil Collins is up to it, and even Peter Gabriel said: “It’s never been ruled out. I’m trying to picture a time when it would top my priorities list, though.” They have all had their problems and it will be fascinating to see how and if they get on. Finally, a big thank you to Gary Hill and Eclipse Print for the fantastic pictures from the Tenerife vs Las Palmas match. Eclipse Print can be contacted on 678 245 950.

Rajoy battling against Catalan independence THE Spanish Government wants the country’s constitutional court to declare Catalonia’s planned independence referendum illegal.
Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said the vote was not “compatible with the Spanish constitution”. His action followed Saturday’s signing of a self-determination referendum from Spain by north-eastern Spanish region President Artur Mas, calling for a vote on 9th November. Hundreds of thousands of Catalans joined a protest in Barcelona recently, demanding their right to vote. Unhappy at Spain’s refusal to give Catalans more powers, protesters have been energised by Scotland’s recent independence referendum despite a defeat for the Yes army - and many also waved the Scottish flag. But on Monday, Rajoy told the nation via TV after an emergency cabinet meeting: “Nobody and nothing will be allowed to break up Spain.” Catalonia’s 7.5 million inhabitants make up around 16% of Spain’s population. Yet it is one of Spain’s richest and most highly-industrialised regions, as well as one of its most independent-minded. Spain’s deepening economic crisis, though, has seen a surge in support
for separation. Hours after Mas signed the decree, the turn-out - marking a key annual day of celebration in Barcelona . was something special, tens of thousands of people using the occasion to rally for the right to hold an independence referendum. “La Diada”, as the 300th anniversary of the end of the city’s siege is known locally, has become a show of force for the Catalan independence movement, to the annoyance of some in Catalonia. On 19th September, the regional Catalan parliament voted by 106 to 28 in favour of granting Catalonia’s President the power to hold a referendum, known locally as a “consultation”. Mas, who was re-elected in December 2012, says he can use local laws to hold the vote, even though the central government says its blessing is required. “I can’t pretend that this will be easy, but it doesn’t work just coming out to protest once a year,” Mr Mas said on Catalan television at the weekend. “The future is something you conquer, not a gift, and we have to earn that.”
A recent poll for Spain’s El Pais newspaper showed that 45% of Catalans were in favour of suspending the referendum if Spain’s Constitutional Court declares it illegal. Only 23% would like the referendum to go ahead regardless, the survey suggested. Mas, who was hoping the Scots would clinch independence last month, has only recently become a supporter of full independence. Since 2007, he has spearheaded a push to revitalise Catalan nationalism, known as the Refoundation of Catalanism. He asks: “Can you stop forever a democratic movement of an old nation of Europe?” Mas was “100% certain” an independent Scotland would have been accepted into the 28-nation European Union. And he believes the same would happen if Catalonia were to gain independence from Spain. Spain’s Constitutional Court is expected to rule that a referendum in Catalonia would be “illegal” in a matter of weeks, But Mas seems unperturbed, claiming that a “non-legally binding
vote” would still be possible under Catalan law. However, when asked what a Yes vote would actually mean, his answer was unclear. But that, perhaps, demonstrates that no one really knows, because it would be uncharted territory, with the integrity of Spain at stake. What if the Catalan Government were offered a “third option”, of more powers, or a new economic settlement with Madrid, via some form of constitutional change? Mas said he would accept that as long as the terms were open, and voted upon by the Catalan public. Those in Spain, and in Catalonia, who are now actively fighting against Catalan independence and a referendum on the subject, believe the proindependence camp has shifted the debate, from one about secession to one about the Catalan public’s so-called “right to decide”. Jose Juan Toharia, from Spanish polling company Metroscopia, says: “The subject of independence has become very confused.” He argues: “Who would not support the concept of ‘the right to decide?’ It has been in a success in semantics of the independence movement.” Marcus Pucnik does not sound Catalan or Spanish. But this son of a former Slovenian politician, who now works for the Catalan equivalent of the Scottish “Better To-
gether” campaign, proclaims he is both. “It is not a good thing to have a referendum in which people are forced to define themselves as either Catalan or Spanish,” he said. “ People are mixed.” His organisation’s real name is Catalan Civil Society and his group “would never support” a referendum on Catalan independence, he stressed. “But we would accept it if it were legal, and within democratic margins, and guaranteed a free and fair vote.” Marcus believes the pro-independence movement in Catalonia has hijacked Catalonia’s national day, which before was simply a celebration of Catalan history and culture. “We are called traitors, or anti-Catalans, when, in fact, we are both very Catalan and very Spanish,” he added. For some, like 30-yearold Mireia Maymi, the desire for independence comes from a mix of identity and economics. She is studying the art of dubbing films and TV series into Catalan - the predominant language in the region - over Spanish. “There are things that happen here that are being decided in Madrid,” she says. “This is not logical.” But the polls paint a more complex picture. According to a recent survey, conducted by Metroscopia, 43% of Catalans would support in-
dependence from Spain, 42% would support staying as part of Spain, with the rest “undecided”. However, when told that Catalonia would automatically remain outside of the EU, the percentage supporting independence fell to 38%, while 53% favoured remaining part of Spain. Most interesting of all, when people were given a third option of constitutional change, involving more powers shifting from Madrid to Barcelona, 44% preferred that option, with the number supporting independence falling to just 23%. In recent weeks, it has emerged that Jordi Pujol, the former Catalan president, and possibly the region’s most famous politician of all time, has millions of euros in bank accounts in Andorra. The Spanish press is awash with allegations and stories of corruption, and the Metroscopia poll found that more than half of those Catalans interviewed believed the case against Jordi Pujol had damaged the independence movement. However, Manuel Cuyas, a journalist who transcribed Jordi Pujol’s memoirs, believes the case will damage the political party of Artur Mas and Jordi Pujol, but not the independence movement itself. But Mas, though “disappointed”, said, it did not change things fundamentally and his campaign for a Scottishstyle referendum continues.

Bumper cruise crowds let loose in Santa Cruz THE Canary Islands will welcome more than 90,000 cruise passengers over the next month, with 37 cruise liners docking in Santa Cruz during October. During September, the likes of the MSC Sinfonia and Celebrity Eclipse visited the Santa Cruz port. The first one arrived with 1,400
tourists and 600 crew, and the second with 2,800 tourists and 950 crew. The National Geographic Explorer was in Santa Cruz, La Palma, this week, and it also had a scheduled stop in San Sebastián, La Gomera. This month, 24 ships will call into Tenerife’s Santa Cruz port, plus 12 at Santa Cruz de La Palma and San Sebastián de La Gomera. It means that over the next few weeks, these three islands will ca-
ter for 93,521 visitors - 69,250 cruise passengers and the remaining ships’ crews. A total of 24 stops in Tenerife translates to 66,470 visitors to the Island. Meanwhile, a dozen stops in Santa Cruz de La Palma will see 26,101 passengers disembark in the city. The highlight comes in La Palma Harbour on 31st October when Capital Liberty of the Seas and Adonia both arrive, carrying 5,981 visitors between them.
Yes must mean Yes when it’s about sex STUDENTS on state-funded Californian campuses will now need clear, active consent before all sexual activity.
It is the first American state to impose such a law following Governor Jerry Brown signing of the Yes means Yes bill which, advocates say, will change the perception of rape. The legislation stipulates that voluntary agreement, rather than lack of resistance, defines consent. President Obama launched an initiative in January to combat sexual assault, particularly on college campuses. It is the first law in a US state to make the language of affirmative consent a central principle of school sexualassault policies.
The rule defines consent as “an affirmative, conscious and voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity”. However, lawmakers say that consent can be non-verbal if it is unambiguous. The aim is to improve the way campuses deal with accusations of sexual assault, and to challenge the idea that victims of sexual crimes must resist assault in order to validate complaints. The legislation also says that silence, or a lack of resistance, do not constitute consent. Under the bill, someone who is drunk, drugged, unconscious or asleep cannot grant consent. Sofie Karasek, an activist from the University of CaliforniaBerkeley, told San Jose Mercury News that she believed the bill would change the cultural per-
ception of rape. “There’s this pervasive idea that if it’s not super violent, then it doesn’t really count,” she said. But critics say the new law expands the definition of assault dangerously. The National Coalition For Men condemned the bill as “misandric” (man-hating). Officials believe “gives licence to false accusations, denies the accused due process, will cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars in law suits and sets the stage for ruining innocent lives”. The Department of Education has named dozens of colleges and universities under investigation for mishandling sexual assault cases. The US estimates one in five women is sexually assaulted while at university.

Would you swop your garage - for a village? DID you know that a Spanish village can be purchased for the same price as a garage in London?
Hard to believe, but absolutely true, says Elvira Fafián, who manages aldeasabandonadas.com a website that just about controls the market in abandoned villages. There are around 3,000 Spanish villages up for sale: an investment for some, an opportunity to invest for others, and the chance to start a new life for yet more people. “We receive around 150 emails a day, mostly about buying a village,” says Elvira. “And around 70% of inquiries are from foreigners. There has been strong demand this year and we can’t keep up - this is a boom!” The majority of potential buyers come from
Switzerland, Germany, Mexico, Russia, China and the US. Elvira says there is a widespread perception that the crisis in Spain has sent property prices plummeting - and that now is the time to buy. The majority of the 100-or-so villages she has for sale cost from around 60,000 to 2m euros. Documentaries about Spain’s deserted villages have been shown all over the world, prompting in-
quiries from as far away as Australia. But despite the overseas’ interest, there have been few takers. Buyers hoping for a bargain have, instead, come up against red tape, building costs - and banks reluctant to lend. Together, the 14 properties that make up Esblada, once a rural idyll set against the dramatic backdrop of the Ancosa mountains, is now little more than pile of stones, on sale for 280,000 euros. Two main streets and a couple of squares can just be made out under the tangle of vegetation. The last residents left in the Sixties after a small insecticide factory closed and charcoal production was industrialised. And Esblada highlights the problems of selling a village. The prices may be bargain basement, but the economics of rebuilding houses can be several times the actual cost of buying them. And when prospective purchasers come looking, the first thing they do is start totting up the
costs. At the moment, a Chinese buyer is interested, as are a group of young locals. The seller is a bank which embargoed the community after its former owner tried and failed to set up a rural tourism business. There aren’t many figures available for a market characterised by emptiness. But it is clear that while the purchase of all types of property by overseas buyers has hit a historic high in the first half of this year, there are few takers for whole villages. Elvira sells “one or two” communities a year, but refuses to give any details about who buys them. Mark Adkinson, a British resident in Galicia for the last 40 years, who has five villages for sale, says the main obstacle to Spanish buyers is that banks won’t lend. He has sealed a number of deals, only to find that the banks won’t lend unless all the paperwork on every property in the community is in order.
Although there is growing interest in buying abandoned villages, nobody so far has stumped up the cash, he says. Mark has two potential buyers, from Britain and the Czech Republic, on the go. And despite the market vagaries, he believes he is sitting on a gold mine. “This can only get better,” he adds. “There are a lot of people out there with money. And as soon as they overcome their fears about the financial crisis, they will come forward. “People are sick and tired of living in big cities. They want to be able to choose their neighbours and spend their time as they see fit. That is still possible in Spain.” Javier Vázquez Renado, an architect in his early thirties, has also set himself up as a real estate agent, specialising in abandoned villages. He has been seeking one for several months, and wants to develop a community for retired foreigners. “This is just the beginning,” he says. “The market is starting to take off. On the one hand, prices are low. And on the other, people are interested in selling because they need the money.” In Galicia’s Ribeira Sacra, José Ramón Castro and his octogenarian mother, Alicia López, are the sole remaining inhabitants of a picturesque community which has been empty for years, and is now up for sale ...
but they are not very optimistic. Life is hard in the mountains of northwest Spain: the last resident to go exchanged his house for a set of clothes! But mother and son are holding out against the odds. “We have not been lucky in life, which is why we’ve ended up here,” says 88-year-old Alicia. They survive on what they can grow for themselves, along with any fruit they can forage, as well as the pittance their pension provides. The pair are resigned to having no neighbours to help with traditional tasks such as the autumn pig slaughter, or chat with when they’re collecting water from the river, or to help get rid of a wild boar that has terrorised them for the last month. Castro casts his mind back and recalls: “This used to be such a lovely place. You can only imagine how happy we were here when we were kids. “Now look at it - it’s like a jungle. If somebody doesn’t buy the place, it will all just fall apart.” The couple try not to raise their hopes when foreigners come looking around. Many have come, and many have gone, swayed by the beauty of the place, particularly in summer, when the peach and cherry trees are in fruit. Everybody who views the village agrees that the place is magical, but something holds them back. Maybe they need a wand!

Attacks on gays ignored by some Spanish police HOMOPHOBIC attacks in Spain are becoming more frequent but few victims complain because, they say, police do not always treat them seriously.
“They tend to play it down and treat it like a fight,” said one victim, who has now filed a complaint at a Madrid Court. And the case of another battered couple who followed their example remains open. Gay rights groups say that assaults are definitely increasing, yet only a few are reported to the authorities. In 2010, the European Commission asked the European Agency for Fundamental Rights to collect data on discrimination and crime against gays, lesbians and transsexuals. The survey, released
in May 2013, showed that 46% of Spanish respondents claimed to have been victims of attacks or violent threats over the past year - just 1% above the EU average. Yet only 18% had filed formal complaints, which was just 1% below average. When asked why, 48%
of Spanish respondents said it did not occur to them, and 32% felt it would be useless. Some 19% feared a homophobic reaction by the police, 16% were frightened of reprisals and 15% were too ashamed. Amanda Rodríguez, co-ordinator of Arcópoli, an LGTB association for the Polytechnic and
Complutense universities in Madrid, said that most assault victims they see “have not come out of the closet yet”. The FELGTB national federation has launched a campaign under the slogan No te calles,¡denuncia! (Don’t stay quiet, report it!) urging victims and witnesses to report cases. “We need a specific law, just like the one that fights abuse against women,” said a spokesperson. Raúl García, from the Madrid-based LGBT group Cogam, said: “We are seeing a similar effect as with abused women years ago. We recommend that they file a complaint, but we cannot force them to.” The younger the victims, it appears, the greater the likelihood that they have not told their friends and family about their sexual preferences. In April, following EU recommendations, the Spanish Government for the first time - pub-
lished a report on “hate” crimes, which are not described as such in the Penal Code but are considered an “aggravating circumstance” instead. This study showed that of the 1,172 hate crimes recorded in 2013, a majority (452) were based on the victim’s sexual orientation, followed by race (381) and disabilities (290). The Interior Ministry claims that more than 14,500 police and Civil Guard officers have already had specific training to deal with hate crimes. Madrid’s Attorney’s Office released a report this month that mentions a rise in these kinds of attacks, saying: “Daily practice shows that many of these matters may sometimes be considered of minor importance by law enforcement agencies, judges and attorneys.” The latest report by the Attorney General also warns that these crimes are often “not properly classified” be-
cause of the way the police or court conduct the investigation. “And also because many victims fail to report attacks “due to personal circumstances, fear of reprisals, a feeling of vulnerability, lack of trust in law enforcement agencies or a lack of legal residency papers”. One victim said: “My partner and I had just come out of a nightclub. It was 3.50am. Two welldressed men in white shirts, aged somewhere between 25 and 30, said to us, ‘How are you, boys?’ We said we were going home, and one of them said, ‘You’re not going anywhere, you fag!’ and he started to hit us. It was madness. “He kept yelling, ‘Get out of here, you faggots!’ My partner got a broken nose and I had bruises all over my body.” He added: “When I went to report it to the police, they were unpleasant, which is why we decided to report it directly in the courts.”

China’s short-cut to Spain SPAIN is the latest European country to streamline travel rules to attract a larger share of tourists from China.
The move was reported as Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Bei-
jing. More than 200,000 Chinese tourists visited Spain in 2013, according to the official Xinhua news agency, and the figure is expected to increase by nearly 50% this year. Visas will be processed within 48 hours under the new system, according to the staterun China Daily newspaper, but there was no mention of when
the process would begin. Rajoy said at the outset of his meeting with Xi at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People: “The main goal of my current visit to China is to strengthen Spain’s political relationship, bilateral relationship and the economic and trade co-operation with China, Chinese companies
Giant truck kills three A MONSTER truck killed three spectators when it ploughed into the crowd at an annual motor show in the Netherlands
The incident occurred on Sunday and the third fatality was announced on Monday, leaving a boy, a man and a woman dead. Five people were left critically ill in hospital and another 18 were left
with lesser injuries following the event in the eastern province of Haaksbergen, in Overijssel. Video footage shows the modified pick-up with outsized tyres driving over a row of cars as part of the show - then veering off course. Helicopters helped ferry the injured to hospitals in three nearby towns. Town authorities said on their website on Sunday: “A so-called monster truck drove into a crowd of specta-
tors. A terrible accident with two dead victims.” Video of the accident posted on social media showed the truck revving hard and then riding over six cars before suddenly heading towards spectators, who were separated from the show by metal barriers. Some screaming spectators were able to scramble away, but others had no time to escape. The truck driver was detained and an inquiry opened, say local police.

between us and don’t have any historical problems.” Rajoy also met Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, National People’s Congress Chairman Zhang Dejiang and Spanish business leaders. Boosting trade with China - Spain’s thirdlargest source for imports - was a primary
focus of Rajoy’s fourday trip, which ended last Saturday. On the Thursday, Rajoy and Li signed 14 deals worth more than ?246bn, in areas including “alfalfa export, film, nuclear power, telecommunication, finance, wind electricity, seawater desalination and tourism”, reported news agency Xinhua.

Clooney’s new wedding role!
G E O R G E CLOONEY, once acknowledged as the world’s most eligible bachelor, was married to lawyer Amal Alamuddin during Monday’s civil ceremony in Venice - at the end of a four-day party.
The service came two days after the couple said “I Do” in a private ceremony, attended by family, close friends Matt Damon and Bill Murray, plus other international stars.
A host of famous guests also attended the lavish, pre-wedding reception for the couple, who travelled by boat to the City Hall for both brief encounters. Clooney, a double Oscar winner, wore a lightgrey suit for the legal ceremony, while his Lebanese-born wife, a British human-rights lawyer, wore a cream pant-suit and matching hat. A local politician escorted them inside the building to sign the marriage papers, and they waved to wellwishers outside following the 13-minute affair Clooney, one of the world’s most recognis-
able actors, was previously married to Talia Balsam, but they divorced in 1993. The American won his Oscars for Best Supporting Actor in Syriana (2006) and for Best Picture as producer of last year’s Argo. Apart from his film work, he has embraced human-rights causes such as the Darfur crisis in Sudan, and there is talk of him going into politics eventually. Amal, who met Clooney through her work, has defended Wikileaks’ Julian Assange and former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, among others.
Tragic Lynda sets a date with death LYNDA BELLINGHAM, the actress suffering terminal cancer, has earmarked her own date for dying. The 66-year-old, best known for playing a mum in the old Oxo TV adverts, plans to end life-extending chemotherapy treatment, allowing her to die after Christmas. She has colon cancer, which has spread to her lungs and liver, and wants to spend one more Christmas with her family before passing away. Lynda plans to stop having chemo around November and believes she may lose her life by the end of January. She was diagnosed in July last year and, in her new autobiography, Lynda spells out how
she revealed her idea to doctors. In excerpts printed in a Sunday newspaper, she said: “August 13, 2014. Yesterday was the glorious 12th - a day for us to remember because it is also the day I decided when I will die. I am very dramatic, aren’t I? “I know it is not ultimately my decision, but it is my last vestige of control to sit in front of the oncologist and say when I would like to stop having chemo and let the natural way do its thing. “I sat down with (husband) Michael and Professor Stebbing and announced: ‘The time has come to cease and desist. I would love to make one more Christ-
mas, if possible. “‘But I want to stop taking chemo around November in order to pass away by the end of January’.” Earlier this year, TV’s regular Loose Women panellist, whose sister Barbara died from lung cancer, picked up an OBE from Buckingham Palace in recognition of her 40-year career. Highlights included the TV series All Creatures Great And Small, competing in Strictly Come Dancing and starring in the touring stage production of Calendar Girls. In the long-running Oxo TV adverts, her starring role as the mother in a squabbling family was first screened in the Eighties.

Tenerife’s Derby delight THE Canary Islands ground to a halt last Sunday morning as the archipelago’s senior football teams clashed in Santa Cruz. The eagerly-awaited match between CD Tenerife and league leaders Las Palmas is always a highlight of the season and,as ever, passions ran high. Police leave was cancelled in Santa Cruz over the weekend but, thankfully, the match and the weekend went off without any major incidents. Some 3,000 fans travelled from Gran Canaria by ferry, and they were closely monitored by the police. So much so that they were given an escort from the ferry point before and after the match. Tenerife fans gave them the legendary “welcome”, including the traditional burning of the pio, or Tweety Pie! Dorada was in full flow and, following Tenerife’s famous victory, the party went long into the day … and the night. *Full match report: Page 52.

Gino’s Italian Escape: A Taste Of The Sun ITV1, 20.00 This week Gino D’Acampo travels through the spectacular landscape of unmistakable Tuscany. As both a chef and a tourist, he is eager to experience the glorious, timeless city of Siena. Gino is drawn to this unique place, especially its famous sloping Piazza del Campo and its magnificent gothic cathedral, whose beauty leaves Gino mesmerised. Siena is renowned for its ‘panforte’ – a rich, spiced fruit and nut cake that originated in the area during the 13th century. Our chef is invited to taste this ancient Christmas cake and although initially apprehensive, Gino is inspired by its exciting flavour combinations. He decides to create his own chocolate version of panforte, on a terrace overlooking the striking cathedral. Next, Gino travels through the area’s rolling hills to visit a group of Benedictine monks. He arrives at their abbey to the sound of Gregorian chanting and is blown away by the beautiful, haunting sound. Following the service, Gino is keen to find out more about the monks’ way of life. As he chats to the brothers, our chef tempts them with a slice of his amazing chocolate panforte – but will they succumb to his tasty treat? The monks invite Gino on a tour of their vast vineyard and allow him to sample their locally produced Tuscan red wine. Gino is so impressed that he uses the wine to makes his final dish – juicy, marinated beef skewers and a delectable three-bean salad.

Penguins - Spy in the Huddle BBC2, 19:45
Documentary showing penguins as they have never been seen before. From the freezing Antarctic to the scorching tropics, 50 spy cameras capture unique footage of three extraordinary species. Emperor penguins cross a treacherous frozen sea to reach their breeding grounds, and on the way one becomes lost in a blizzard. Once there, the females flipper flight over the males and those that succeed ‘waddle walk’ with their partners. They must lay their eggs without touching the ice, but it is the males that face the greatest challenge overwintering alone in the coldest place on earth. Rockhoppers brave the world’s stormiest seas, only to come ashore and face a daunting assault up a 300-foot cliff, hopping most of the way up. Humboldts are a strange tropical penguin that has rarely been filmed. To reach their desert nests they negotiate 20,000 predatory sea lions, dodge vampire bats and battle half a million sharp-beaked seabirds.

The Antiques Roadshow returns to Scone Palace in Perthshire, Scotland, which provides an imposing backdrop for a roadshow brimming with beautiful treasures and items reputed to have famous historical connections. Family legend holds that a 19th-century military campaign box was stolen from Napoleon - but can it be proven? A striking portrait reveals the story of a woman who helped save the lives of hundreds of Jews in occupied Holland during the Second World War. The team admire a silver tea service that was once due to be melted down to raise funds for a spitfire during the war. Fiona Bruce meets a teacher with a fearsome leather strap - the Scottish equivalent of the cane, an implement of corporal punishment only outlawed in the 1980s.

This series demonstrates that the world’s most sacred rivers don’t just flow through countries, they define them. Simon travels from source to sea along the world’s longest river, the Nile. His journey will take him from the holy source of the Blue Nile in the Ethiopian highlands, through the desert of Sudan and onwards through Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. The life-giving river has forged some of our earliest civilisations and influenced some of our greatest religions. But with populations along its banks rising fast, Nile countries are demanding an ever-greater share of the sacred waters, threatening the stability of the entire region.

George Clooney turns in a fine performance as a middle-aged man whose family life appears to be on point of imploding in this drama from Alexander Payne, director of Sideways and About Schmidt. Hawaiian property lawyer Matt King is in the midst of sensitive negotiations over a tract of unspoilt land that’s culturally significant to indigenous Hawaiians, and which his family has inherited, when tragedy strikes. His wife has been involved in a waterskiing accident and now lies gravely ill and comatose in hospital. This should bring him closer to the daughters he’s neglected: 10-year-old Scottie and 17-yearold Alex. He’s a bit taken aback by their foul-mouthed squabbles, but he soon realises that they have deeper problems than a fondness for expletives - and, on top of that, they also reveal that they’ve been holding back a secret about their mother which comes as both a shock and a catalyst for action to Matt.

Plebs ITV2, 22.00 All roads lead to Rome for the return of the multi-award winning comedy PLEBS in a brand new eight part series. A modern comedy in an ancient setting, PLEBS charts the antics of three under achievers, all of whom are on a desperate quest to live the ‘when in Rome’ mantra to the full in the empire’s most exciting city. Since series one the world has indeed progressed (from 27BC to 26BC) but flat-mates Marcus (Tom Rosenthal), Stlax (Joel Fry) and slave Grumio (Ryan Sampson) have made no strides whatsoever. Not domestically, not financially and certainly not romantically. Marcus’ ongoing crush Cynthia (Sophie Coliquhoun) is still next door, and still ignoring his advances, with her own slave Metella (Lydia Rose Bewley) on hand with a sarcastic quip to keep Marcus at bay. Stylax wants Marcus to give up on her and move on so that they can realize their dreams of being ‘the big men of Rome’. For Stylax this also means becoming a champion charioteer. Who cares if he doesn’t own a chariot and can’t drive?

Property sector putting its house in order again SPAIN’S housing sector was given a boost this week with the news that prices rose in the second quarter of the year against the same 2013 period.
It is the first year-onyear increase since 2008, and a sign that the country’s realestate sector’s “bust” has run its course, although it is hardly the time yet to be considering a return to the “boom” days. The upbeat data was issued on Monday by Spain’s Finance Minister, who gave a tentative projection of higher growth for the Spanish economy, which emerged a year ago from its second
recession in five years. Spain’s national statistics institute said second-quarter housing prices had increased 0.8% on the year, compared with a 1.6% drop in annual terms in the first quarter. On a quarterly basis, housing prices rose 1.7% over their level during the first three months of the year, the institute said. The increases can be read as the strongest signal yet that the collapse of real-estate prices, which began in 2008, has bottomed out. But it is not seen as evidence of a recovery, cautioned Beatriz Toribio, head of research at Fotocasa, the large real-estate firm. “What we see is a trend towards price stabilisation, she said.
“Yet the property market is definitely not in a broad-based rebound.” But though housing prices have declined 35% in Spain overall in the past six years, the economy has been gaining traction since it emerged from a ninequarter-long recession in the second half of last year, triggering more appetite for Spanish assets such as property. But Ms Toribio said domestic demand for housing in Spain was still flimsy, because many would-be Spanish buyers lack jobs and cash reserves and would not qualify for mortgages. That leaves foreign investors leading the demand for housing, and stronger price rebounds in areas where
they focus their interest, she said. Those areas include central districts of Madrid and Barcelona and parts of the southern Mediterranean coast. And that’s where the good news really sets in because, if you have bundles of money to spend, property in the luxury sector has remained steady over the past six months. In fact, figures from Barcelona-based estate agents Lucas Fox shows the number of transactions is increasing across all regions as the gap between asking and sales prices continues to narrow. International clients account for around 90% of all its sales, with interest from Far East and Middle East investors still gaining momentum.
“The Barcelona market has continued to improve in the first two quarters of 2014, and there is a great deal more confidence amongst buyers, in particular international buyers,’ said Lucas Fox co-founder Alexander Vaughan. “It looks as though prices have now stabilised, and the number of transactions is slowly increasing.” He added: “The big change is that sellers are being more realistic, and that asking prices have come down in line with buyer expectations.” And Ibiza is a prime target for buyers. Interest in prime market properties there comes primarily from the UK and northern European buyers, but interest from US buy-
ers has doubled in the past year “The continued appeal of Ibiza is most definitely its unique lifestyle,” said Amanda Marti, a director of the company¡s Ibiza branch. “More people are choosing to relocate to the island because of good schools, including international schools, outstanding properties and the exceptional quality of life. “And the island now offers 4G internet and better year-round flight connections. Interest from Europeans is still high, but demand has significantly increased from the Asian market, mainly Korean and Chinese buyers. “There has also been a rise in interest from American investors.”
Mortgages not such an easy touch now! MORTGAGE lending is set to keep tumbling over the next few months, as official statistics reveal that new loans to home-buyers have dropped again.
Loan approvals for house purchases fell to 64,212 in August, from 66,100 a month earlier, and well below their six-month average of 65,738. The number of loans for this purpose was just 0.9% higher in August than in the same month a year ago, according to Bank of England figures. Such a tiny rise is, said Matthew Pointon, property economist at Capital Economics, “a rapid deceleration from annual growth rates of 30% to 40% at the start of the year”. The lack of new mortgages coincides with a
fall in UK house prices after two heady years. And Nationwide warns that the house-price outlook appears “highly
uncertain”. Much of the “sharp slowdown” in demand is because buyers are being deterred by “higher prices for
already very expensive homes”, said Mr Pointon. Fabrice Montagne, of Barclays, said that
while the “data changed little from July, survey data point to a slowdown ahead as housing cools”.
Both the RICS survey on newly-agreed sales for August, and September’s Hometrack report, showed falling inquiries by buyers in recent months. Analysts have highlighted the tighter lending rules - the Mortgage Market Review (MMR) recommendations - as partially responsible for the drop in new loans. The MMR’s April recommendations “clearly caused a decisive step down in housing activity by rationing the availability of credit to potential home-owners”, said Martin Beck, senior economic advisor to the EY Item Club. Signs that house-price growth is cooling off may now entice more buyers, along with the prospect of some modest growth in real wages. Mr Pointon said these factors “should lead to a gradual recovery in mortgage-lending towards the end of the year”.

Human Universe With Professor Brian Cox BBC2, 21.00 Human Universe with Professor Brian Cox tackles the most profound questions we have ever asked: Why are we here? How did the universe make us? What made the universe? Are we alone? And what is our future? In his own words, Brian describes Human Universe as a “love letter to humanity” – as the series unfolds, he will show that we are one of the most precious, unique and wonderful species in the universe. Episode 1: Apeman Spaceman The story of how on a tiny planet tucked away in an insignificant corner of the universe, a group of apes evolved to make the greatest leap of them all… Professor Cox opens this new landmark series by asking the question: who are we? The first episode explores how it was that in a universe made of stars, rocks and endless space, a conscious civilisation emerged. Of all the creatures to have crawled, swam and flown over the Earth only one creature has evolved the ability to escape the planet - us. To Brian, this ascent is the pinnacle of our achievements. Starting in Ethiopia, high above in the great Rift Valley, Brian encounters our distant ancestors, the geladas. They were once Africa’s most successful primate, roaming across the entire continent. Yet today they are found just in one place in the remote Ethiopian Highlands. So how did this happen? Why have our ancestors retreated, yet we have expanded everywhere? Brian finds clues in the valley where new research has uncovered evidence that our origins may in fact lie in space. Brian carefully pieces together a new theory that links for the first time the expansion of our ancestor’s brain size to the way in which Earth’s orbit changes over time. It seems the universe played a surprising role in our own origins. But big brains alone did not get our species into space. To understand what did, Brian travels to Jordan. In the ancient Nabatean city of Petra, Brian explains how it was brains coming together to build cities, to farm and ultimately to pass information from one brain to another in the form of writing, that paved our way to space. The episode concludes on the Steppe of Kazakhstan where Brian is embedded with the Russian Space Agency (RosCosmos). He joins a search and rescue mission in the depths of winter as the team try to make it through the snow to collect two cosmonauts and an astronaut as they arrive back on Earth after months living aboard the International Space Station.
My Big Beautiful Wedding Dress BBC1, 22:35 Documentary following best friends Jo and Alison, who run a bridal shop for plus-size women. The programme follows two brides in the run-up to their weddings. Upset by the way she was treated in ordinary bridal shops, Jenna was ready to give up the search for her dream dress before she found Jo and Alison. Lindsay doesn’t normally do dresses but, following the death of her sister ten years ago, she has decided to have a church wedding to give her father the chance to walk one of his daughters down the aisle. While the pair are busy attending to their clients, the search is also on for a bridal dress for Jo, who is renewing her vows with husband Kevin on their 13th wedding anniversary.

Cat Watch 2014: The New Horizon Experiment BBC2, 20.00 Cats are a truly fascinating species, continuously evolving from miniature lion to domestic pet. Following last year’s BBC Horizon investigation into the secret lives of 50 cats living in one village, our team of professional cat experts are back to dig deeper into the incredible world of cats. Cat Watch 2014: The New Horizon Experiment is a new three-part series presented by Liz Bonnin, Professor Alan Wilson and his team from the Royal Veterinary College, and cat experts Doctor John Bradshaw and Doctor Sarah Ellis. They combine GPS tracking technology and cat-cams with a unique set of scientific experiments. This time they’re tracking, testing, filming and following 100 cats living three very different lifestyles; living cheek-by-jowl in the terraced streets of Brighton city centre, village cats from Rottingdean with far more room to roam, and working farm cats who rely on their hunting skills to survive. The first episode discovers how our pet cats see, hear and smell very differently to human beings, and how they have evolved as supreme predators. The second episode reveals the way our pampered pets transform into wild animals when they leave the cat flap to hunt and fight, with some displaying more of a wild side than others. The final episode in this science documentary examines the way cats communicate, and how our 21st century life is forcing them to change their naturally solitary nature. Pet cats are adapting and learning new ways to communicate with each other, and with us. Throughout this BBC Two series we meet owners and cats including Ozzy - the king of his terraced street; Sandwich - one of the top hunters in the village; and Tigger - a city cat caught on camera chasing down his neighbour. This revealing practical study into a cat’s ability to live alongside us yet retain that independent wild side underlines why cats have become modern humans’ greatest animal friend (just don’t tell the dogs).

Ramsay’s Costa Del Nightmares Channel 4, 21:00
Gordon travels to the stunning whitewashed mountain village of Gaucin, half an hour from the Costa del Sol, and a brand new upmarket start-up restaurant. La Granada Divino has only been open for eight weeks, but is already heading for disaster. The restaurant is owned by architect Milan and former model Gina, who have never run a restaurant and have sunk their savings and retirement fund into the project. Their head chef is not the man they thought he was. Their relationship with him is at an all-time low and the restaurant is losing €4000 a month, even though there are many hungry tourists on their doorstep.
Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners Channel 4, 20:00
Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners returns for a third series, with more dirt, grime and hugely challenging cleans than before. The series follows people who, by their own admission, cannot stop cleaning, and carefully matches them with someone whose home is in dire need of a spring clean. Together these people with such contrasting compulsions explore how their different behaviour affects their lives.

The Great British Bake Off BBC1, 20:00 The Final. Baking challenge presented by Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, with judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. The final has arrived and just three challenges lie between the remaining three bakers and the trophy. The signature challenge requires mastery in three hours of a classic pastry technique that normally takes a day. The technical challenge tests the bakers beyond anything they have tackled in the previous nine weeks by requiring them to master the basics with no recipe. The final showstopper challenge demands delivery of perfect sponge, caramel, choux pastry and petit four in their final five hours in the tent. Each baker is worthy, but who will be crowned winner of the Great British Bake Off?

But with a child-minder and her stoned boyfriend in the mix, it’s unclear who had the baby’s best interests at heart. Long: Unable to make peace with being second choice, RACHEL punishes JANET for keeping the truth from her. And whilst WILL seems to be everything she ever wanted, not even he can persuade her that she needs to drop the attitude. Who Do You Think You Are? Twiggy BBC 1, 21.00 Model, actor and fashion designer Twiggy is credited with being one of the world’s first supermodels. Born Lesley Hornby, her life changed for ever when, aged 16, a reporter spotted her photo on the wall of a Mayfair hairdresser and ran a story describing her as the ‘face of the 60s’. Twiggy says: “It was madness. I was suddenly in the newspapers and being flown all around the world, we were a very ordinary, happy family, and I had a happy childhood. “I grew up in Neasden, which is a suburb of north-west London. We didn’t have lots of money but, you know, we had a car, we had a telly. I had my mum and dad; I had my sisters. “He was brilliant, my dad. I was devoted to him. That doesn’t mean I didn’t love and adore mum, but she was much, much more complicated. She suffered with her nerves. “My mum didn’t like talking about the past. I have a vague memory of her dad who died when I was, I think about four-ish. I know nothing about her mum. I don’t get the impression she was from a bad family or there was anything wrong with them. I think she was very close to her mum and dad. “I feel, heart and soul, a Londoner, and I’m very proud of it. My dad came from Lancashire, so it’s weird my mum married him - she hated going anywhere north of Watford. “What am I going to find out? I’m off on an awfully big adventure and I’m very excited.” Twiggy grew up in a close-knit family in London - but admits that her parents told her nothing at all about her family. She discovers a history of strong women – and a hint of crime. Twiggy’s episode marks the 100th episode of the Who Do You Think You Are? series.

All they have to do is convince their other bridesmaids and closest hens that their friendship with this crazy comedy creation and new addition to the wedding party is genuine. On this week’s episode, bride to be Becci is about to embark on a fun hen weekend with sisters in law Emma and Victoria, best friend Stevie and oldest pal Charlotte. Over four days Becci will need to convince her mates that the bizarrely eccentric Phoebe is her fiancée’s cousin whose joined the celebrations at the last minute. But Phoebe, played by comedienne Anneka Harry, is a completely unique creation, specially written and tailor made for our bride-to-be and her hens, will know exactly what buttons to press to ensure sparks fly and hilarity ensues on a weekend they’re never likely to forget. Phoebe and her synthesizer set about bring mischief and mayhem to the preceding’s. If frequently unleashing her unique musical talents and poetry wasn’t enough to rile the other maids, she has a whole host of bizarre suggestions for the wedding which bride Becci will have to go along with if she is to be in with a chance to win the honeymoon. Phoebe has the girls wishing they could reach for the headphones as the over zealous bad bridesmaid causes hysteria during the burlesque class, evokes tears during the brides maid dress fitting and leaves her fellow maids bemused when announcing her specially crafted poem should be read at the wedding.

Entertainment
By Jamie Droo IT has been very interesting this week in Studio One at Oasis Fm.
Every day, I have had the pleasure of interviewing some of the fine artistes nominated for the finals of the 8th Annual Tenerife Entertainment Awards. One category that always seems to contain the most unpretentious artistes is The Best Solo Performer, and this year the voting will be incredibly tight. Each nominee has a wealth of experience and everyone under this entertainment umbrella is a musician of some kind. They all seem to have the same work ethic and are completely comfortable with their own talent. Sam Saxo is the only exception in this category in that he plays the saxophone as opposed to the guitar. For years, the saxophone has been an instrument most people love to listen to. Sam has worked playing slow grooves at sunset as well as ac-

companying DJs at top nightclubs providing an amazing sound that blends with big house tunes or simply lead breaks and solos alongside artistes like Pip Brown and his Michael Buble Show. He is also a talented musical producer and runs his own recording studio, providing services to performing artistes here in Tenerife. Phil Francis is one of the most talented men to hold a guitar. When somebody becomes one with his instrument, something magical happens. When listening to Phil play, you could be forgiven for thinking he has seven fingers on each hand. People say that you never stop learning in this business, and this may be true, But what is also true is that most musicians would never stop learning from the knowledge and ability of this solo performer. He is as comfortable with an acoustic guitar as he is with a Fender Stratocaster. Yet in recent years, and after decades of never bending from Fender, Phil made the change to a Gibson. They say the sound of a Gibson guitar is very individual and totally different from that of a
Strat, which are commonly used in rock music. In fact, a famous guitarist once said that when you get to the wrong side of 40, most musicians trade in their Strats for Gibsons.
I suppose it’s the same as buying a sports car when you are young and trading it in for something more suitable like an MPV. I wonder what car Phil drives? The final two artistes
in this category are resident in their respective venues, as opposed to Phil and Sam, who work in different venues. Adi Brooks is a musician who looks exactly how a rock star should
look. I mentioned earlier about becoming at one with the instrument being played, and nobody gets close to Adi with this dynamic. Not only is he a superb guitarist, but he is also a technician of this amazing piece of musical kit. Last Tuesday, Adi joined me in Studio 1 at Oasis Fm, where I discovered that his passion for the guitar drove him to build his own. Yes, from scratch, a hand-made guitar, shaped and moulded, strung and set up with his own hands. He still owns two guitars he built, and one of them is in use at McGuiness Bar, his nightly residency. Alongside this unique skill is Adi’s ability to entertain and engage an audience every night of the week. Fergal Flaherty, current holder of this award, can be seen performing throughout the week at a bar called Hole In The Wall, on Parque de la Paz. He has always featured in the awards over the last five years and is hugely popular. His style is influenced by country, rock and Irish music. Quite an eclectic mix you would think, but it is probably this that makes him come across as such an individual. No other artiste on the Island has sold as many albums as Fergal. His recordings are as important to him as the live performances in the bar. There are a few covers within his discography, but the material released is predominantly original. All this music is available through iTunes. Fergal also has a YouTube channel, where you can listen to his music. However, he is nominated for The Best Solo Performer for his live performances in The Hole In The Wall. All four artistes have skills that exceed those displayed on stage, and all have a well-deserved place as nominees. It’s down to their own fan base whether they win the award. I have found it impossible to decide on who to vote for in this category because they are all outstanding musicians.

Entertainer’s decide!
THE highest accolade an entertainer can attain is that which carries the respect of fellow entertainers. And the 2014 award for the Entertainers’ Entertainer, is in its third year.
But, what is it that qualifies an individual for this wonderful piece of recognition? The popularity of the entertainer has a lot to do with receiving this award. However, the popularity is gained in a number of ways. Firstly, it could be simply the amount of selflessness the entertainer has. He or she may tirelessly dedicate time to helping others, whether it be performing at chari-
ty events to raise funds for fellow entertainers down on their luck, or sharing their expertise to help others to get on in the business. Whatever it is that makes the entertainer popular, there is nothing that carries more respect than an award given by those who work alongside you. It’s also an award that has respect baked through it. Of the en-
tertainers, for the entertainers, by the entertainers. Because this award is not a public vote, it has a different feel and a unique format. Nominees are revealed on the day only and then, literally, a couple of minutes later the winner is revealed. There is no time to campaign and no time to prepare for what is about to happen! And it’s anyone’s
guess as to whom will be nominated. I wonder if someone like Robbie Dominic, who has been here since the Dinosaurs, will get a nod? He has had half-a-dozen nominations but is yet to win a statue. Those nominated in the past have been as diverse as Dee Daniels and Mikey Mike. It was easy to see how both previous win-
ners triumphed. Suzie Q, honoured in 2012, was stunned to get the award. Ditto Paul Stone last year. He did remarkably well not to swear! He had previously won Best Tribute, but this was something else. He simply said: “Bloody hell! What is all this about? It’s mad!” Paul was leaving the Island shortly after the awards, and maybe that influenced the enter-
tainers thinking. But there is no criteria as such, and the list of nominees is as interesting as the actual winner. Voting is now underway, and it takes just a few seconds for the entertainers to register they intentions. This part of the awards is open to Tenerife’s entertainers only, and we asked them to lodge their votes by private message to Oasis Fm’s Facebook page. It’s easy to find. Simply send us one private message with the name of the act you wish to vote for. The winner will be announced on the day of the ceremony, next Sunday (12th Oct), at Castillio San Miguel. Who will emerge victorious this year and join Suzie Q and Paul Stone on the roll of honour? Good luck to all entertainers.

By Val Sainsbury A LACK of vitamin D could put thousands of people in the 4282 age bracket at higher risk of fractures, heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
That’s the worrying findings of a Cambridge University study, which discovered that an average of 10% men and women in that group were deficient - proba-

Why vitamin D is so essential
bly because they spend too much time indoors. Researchers also found that adults with the highest levels of vitamin D, which comes mainly from a reaction of sun on the skin, were least likely to die at an earlier age than expected. The vitamin is thought to play a key role in several chemical reactions, and it has been shown to protect against cancers, heart disease, diabetes and boost fertility. The research team,
who studied 4,641 men and women aged between 42-82 from 1997 to 2012, revealed that 9% of men and 13% of women did not have enough vitamin D. And it speaks volumes that in the UK, and other Northern Hemisphere countries, vitamin D is produced in these areas during the summer months only provided it doesn’t rain every day! Fortunately, it is also found in oily fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel, and in mush-
rooms, milk and other dairy produce. Professor Kay-Tee Khaw, from the University of Cambridge’s Department of Public Health and Primary Care, said: “Our data suggests that a modest increase in vitamin D in the general population may minimise the number of people with very low levels of the vitamin. “This could be achieved by taking modest daily vitamin D supplements, or eating oily fish two or three
times a week and increasing physical activity. “That’s because we are more efficient at producing vitamin D if we are physically active.” He added: “We need just 20 minutes a day of sunlight in summer to ensure that we have sufficient levels to see us through the winter, “And we must be careful as we know that over-exposure to sunlight, particularly if we burn, raises the risk of skin cancer.”
Professor Nick Wareham, Director of the University’s Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit, said: “We know that vitamin D deficiency can be detrimental to health. “But until now, there has been no clear answer as to what is actually the ideal amount of the vitamin. “Outside of those whose levels are extremely low, we’ve had no way of knowing how many people are actually getting less vitamin D than they need.”
Be smart, and furnish clever By Sue McDonald WHEN you are furnishing a property for commercial gain, such as letting, this can make a big difference to how you go about it, the inventory you supply and the quality and design of the items you install. For example, some things are obvious. You should select furniture that is going to be tough enough to stand up to holiday-makers. Everything should be easy to clean because, if you are successful with your rentals, you will want a quick turnaround of the property. Working to a budget doesn’t mean you should skimp on the
inventory, or that your property can´t look fabulous and have the wow factor! After all, most rentals are sold on photos, and you want to stand out
from all the other properties available. You definitely shouldn’t choose a white fabric sofa for a holiday apartment in which children will be present. Fake tan
can also be a problem nowadays, as can P40 suncream, which leaves a horrible yellow stain, even on walls and tiles. So imagine what it does to your skin!
As far as budget is concerned, you can also furnish clever. Some items are worth investing in because buying cheaply can be a false economy. A sofa bed which is going to be used extensively will need to be strong and of good quality. Very cheap sofa beds tend not to be comfortable, either as a sofa or as a bed. But a hall picture which is not the focus of attention, or a corner table that is never going to be moved and is hidden by a big lamp, can be of lesser quality. That’s where you can make budget savings. Therefore, it is possible to use your money wisely to achieve that designer look without spending a fortune. There are some shops, such as that Swedish retailer, and another big chain that has opened here in the South lately,
which can supply cheap furnishings because they are able to buy at such volume. Whether they actually have it in stock is another matter! However, we do occasionally use items from them to ensure that we achieve the budget limitations set by our clients. We are, of course, always honest with the clients as to where items come from, and I must also say they both stock a lot of items of which I wouldn’t give house room! But some of the smaller items are really good value, and are handy for keeping the overall price down. Sometimes when we are furnishing for clients, they might have seen a particular item they want to buy from another supplier, perhaps one of the above, or another furniture shop. However, many of these shops don’t actually hold stock, so there can be an order time of some 6-8 weeks. And this can be a problem for people who are on the island for a short time only. So, if they have set their heart on this particular item, we are happy to project-manage for them, which means we communicate with the shop or supplier, hold the clients’ keys and co-ordinate the delivery on their behalf.

A SMOOTH OPERATOR
Go sexy, and be the belle of the Halloween ball! By Ruth Benson
By Carl from Robot
THE kids are now all settled back in school, both here and the UK, and the Tenerife parents will no doubt be jumping for joy after the long summer break.
THERE’S many a time that people quiz me over salon secrets .... especially how to get hair smooth and frizz-free.
So what have they to look forward to now? Don’t worry I won’t mention the C word as we have just as important an event here in October, and that’s Halloween. Having lived in the UK with small children, Halloween was not a big deal. Yes, we got a pumpkin - but that was about it. Here in Tenerife it is a big event both with the British and Canarians. Bars and restaurants will be hosting parties offering apple-bobbing, best costume completions, etc. But what seems key here is choice of outfit. With kids in mind, this week saw the launch of costumes for adults, based on the popular Disney film Frozen. Now, bearing this in mind, the outfits definitely show a different side to the main leading ladies, Elsa and Anna, who have fishnets. And then there is Olaf, and it brings a whole new meaning to “Do you want to build a snowman?”, with stilet-
tos and over-the-knee socks. Sexy Halloween costumes have been around for donkey’s years, but using children’s role models and characters seems to be a big thing, not only for kids but adults, too. Online dressing-up site Yandy.com has a variety of “sexed up” children’s characters, from minions to Minnie Mouse. The site gives a whole new slant to Disney Princesses, with Red Hooded Cutie, Sweetheart Snow, Sassy Cinder Babe and my personal favourite, Sleepless Beauty. The site not only does individual costumes but, as a couple, you can go as Super Mario and Luigi, Jack Sparrow and his mate, as well as many others. Halloween over here is as much for the kids as the adults, and dressing-up is all part of the fun. But how did it come about? The folklore regarding Halloween is based on a hybrid of Pagan, Catholic, Celtic and Roman traditions. It dates back
to the Iron Age, when the Celts and Gauls ruled parts of the UK and Northern France. The last day of the Celtic calendar was 31st October and was a day of celebration before winter, which saw the end of the harvest. The actual wearing of costumes originated in Scotland and Ireland with a tradition called “guising”, in which children dressed up and went door-to-door to collect food. But now it has been commercialised and kids carry out door-to-door, Trick-or-Treat missions for sweets. And, as we all know, costumes can be any sort. Most commonly, though, they are associated with skeletons and witches - the creepier, the better. This tradition dates back to when the Celts dressed up in ghoulishtype costumes to scare spirits away. So for this year’s Halloween, get yourself an outfit and - from sites like Yandy.com it seems that anything goes.

Without using straighteners and using a blowdryer only, this can be difficult … if you’re not using the correct techniques. If your hair is inclined to go frizzy after you blow-dry it, or you just can’t control those wild curls, then read on. Even if your hair is fairly smooth to start with, you can end up with a tangled mess. Firstly, before you even wash your hair, brush it through with a flexible paddle brush to eliminate any tangles or sprays. Then wash and condition it with a hydrating shampoo, paying special attention to the ends when applying your conditioner. This will replace lost moisture and help restore anything you have taken out of your hair since the last wash, such as the damage from sun, wind or heat. When you’ve finished, towel-blot your hair but don’t, under any circumstances, rub it because this causes breakage and literally splits your hair shafts. Instead, squeeze your hair dry as this removes the drips without causing it to tear. Then comes the important part. I always use an argan oil serum
on my clients, even if they have not got dry hair. That’s because it smooths down the cuticle of the hair, leaving it glossy and silky. Next, if you are going to dry your hair with a hair-dryer, start to remove excess moisture by rough-drying it with your hands until 90% dry. Then, and only then, start to dry it with your favourite brush. Your hair will have just as much volume to it, and there is no need to start from wet-through as this just increases the drying time - causing damage. The quicker you dry your hair, the more damage you could eventually do, so take your time in medium sections and blow your hair across a ceramic brush. Yes, all my salon brushes are ceramic because they hold the heat of the dryer and, thus, dry the hair from inside the section and not just from outside. Make sure you keep the dryer moving, and never hold it in one place as this will burn and singe your hair. Finally, once you have finished, reapply a few drops of your oil to seal
the ends - and again to replace lost moisture. If you keep extracting your own hair oils, then you must replace them because this is what keeps your hair intact and frizz-free. Before your next wash, you can reapply your argan oil as and when. And if your hair does need it, then it it will simply soak it up. Finally, if you’re thinking of buying new ceramic brushes, do make sure they are larger than you would normally go for because they will give you more body and lift - and will really smooth out your untameable locks. Try to stay away from using irons too much because, though they do smooth, they can cause frizzy hair with long-term use instead of curing it. Everything in moderation. If you really can’t manage it, then book a blow-dry only with your stylist and let him/her guide you through the ins and outs. That half-hour will be well spent because you will have learned their techniques and tricks for life - ensuring your hair is smooth … from root to tip!

Enjoy yourself - it’s later than you think
A RECENT magazine article advised on ways to tell if you are getting old. But as far as I’m concerned, it’s bad enough knowing you’re getting old, without having it confirmed!
One of my pet hates is that when I walk past shop mirrors and suddenly catch a glimpse of myself, it’s my mother I see! Mind you, I don’t think she’d be wearing jeggings, or as much lipstick! Jokes abound about the ageing state, and you know you’re getting old when: *Pensioners are looking younger! *The doctor asks you to take off that baggy vest, and you’re not even wearing one! *When you bend your knees, everyone ducks thinking it’s a sniper! *And your local paper asks you to do a nostalgia piece … bit close to home, that one! The advice given on knowing when you’re getting old and, really, what a waste of time because there isn’t much you can do about it. As baby-boomers, we don’t really like to be seen to act our age, But somehow, it creeps up on us! A recent survey found that eight out of 10 oldies believe you’re as young as you feel, and should enjoy life as long as you can. However, some things do tend to let us down! *Embarrassing hair growth: There is no doubt that you do seem to get the odd unwelcome tuft or whisker .But in the case of most men, their hair seems to
vanish from their heads and come out of their nose! *Sleeping through TV programmes: Yes, that can be quite relevant at our age. The answer, I suppose is to tape the programmes in advance, go to bed at 8pm and watch them the next morning!, *Finding bending tricky: Well, that’s not rocket science is it? Especially when you’ve had a few joint replacements. It seems that the best thing to do is see if there’s anything else you can be doing while you’re down there! * Your idea of a perfect day changes: Instead of all-day, raves you have a day out at a National Trust property, taking a flask and sandwiches, of course. After all, we are pensioners - and have you seen what they charge for a cuppa? * For a day of absolutely-torrid excitement, you could look up when an Antiques Roadshow is coming to a venue near you! * And chatting to anyone who will listen to you going on about your ailments can take up
quite a long time at our age. Talking about “the good old days” in itself can be debatable. *Can you remember living without central heating? *Not getting modern music, or not getting modern comedians. Given the dross that passed for humour in the Fifties, (remember Arthur Askey and the Busy Bee song?) it’s perhaps best not to dwell too long on what did make us laugh then! *Do you find modern technology difficult unless you are lucky to have a six-year-old
grandson to help you! *Can you remember a time when DFS didn’t have sale on? *Think how young policemen, doctors and teachers look these days? *Choose holidays in adults-only hotels. *Can you open packets of biscuits, tins ... in fact, almost anything? And especially those small plastic packets containing sauce or mustard you get in some restaurants? *Where fashion is concerned, choosing comfort over fashion, especially when it comes to shoes. Were we really
the ladies who danced all night in stiletto heels? *We don’t know any songs in today’s top 10, but we can sing all the words to The Beatles’ numbers. I read in the paper recently that Age UK, together with the Alzheimer’s Society, have put forward an 11-point plan as the Ready For Ageing Alliance, where they recommend that elderly people should acquaint themselves with the music of groups like One Direction to help stave off the ageing process. Do we really have to?
In fact, a famous song of the Eighties was called The Oldest Swinger In Town, which certainly took a poke at the elderly trying to hang on to their youth. And the song Enjoy Yourself, It’s Later Than You Think, which dates back to 1949, can be very much prophetic. Other points in the plan include the usual advice on a healthy diet, exercise, savings, walking more, not smoking and being able to laugh at yourself. As the politician Denis Healey said: “Three things happen when you get old. First, your memory goes ... and I’ve forgotten the other two!” Or George Burns: “At my age, flowers scare me!” And Joan Rivers who, admittedly, could often offend people, but could also be very funny, said: “Looking 50 is great if you are 60!” She also said: “You know why I feel old? When I buy sexy lingerie, it’s automatically gift-wrapped!” And, “My breasts are so low now that I can have a mammogram and a pedicure at the same time!” She could certainly laugh at herself!

Tigers earn their stripes AFTER a busy, emotional and fun-filled four days in Madrid, Tenerife Tigers returned home with a cabin full of cups.
Adeje’s Cheer-andDance troupe won first place in every category entered in the 2ª España competition. And in some cases, the squad, who train at the Tijoco Sports Pavilion, also took second place because they had more than one team entered. For those who might dismiss this as a nonsport, 10 minutes of watching any one of these teams on the day would have been more than enough to dismiss that particular view-
point. These girls, young women and men from all over Spain, trained long and hard to make it to Madrid, and they performed at an exceptionally high level. There were teams from all corners of the country - Alicante, Barcelona, Las Palmas, Cadiz, Madrid, and, of course Tenerife … and the Tigers’ parents were hoarse by the end of the day. Trainer and head coach Amanda Lambert pulled off an incredible whitewash, winning in every category entered, and the
Accion del Sol news
international jury were genuinely impressed, congratulating her personally afterwards on the quality of all her teams’ performances. The Tigers will now represent Spain at the next European Cheerleading Championships, and they are also in the mix to travel to Orlando. But that’s in the future - and for now it is well done and congratulations to the entire group and trainers. The Tenerife Tigers, who are very involved in the Adeje borough, will
be taking part in the Fiestas Patronales (which begin tomorrow (Saturday). And you can catch them in the traditional
Parade on the Callao Grande next Saturday (11th Oct). As head coach Amanda said: “Job very well done!”

Coki, the spaniel, who was brought to the refuge in really poor condition, has, literally, fallen on his paws with new owners Ken and Margaret who, sadly, lost their previous spaniel in April. rible past just a distant memory. Support our stroll Please support Sunday’s fund-raiser, from 10am at the refuge, and make a dog or two very happy. We would like you to walk one of our refuge dogs - or your own down to the sea and, after a cold drink, enjoy a gentle stroll back to the refuge, followed by a buffet lunch and music to entertain you. The cost is just 10 euros per person and includes a T-shirt. But we need your registration prior to the event, so please email teneriffa@aktiontier.org or call 922 778 630 for more information and to reserve a dog.

Why curry gets a
roasting DESPITE all the fancy, exotic, foreign foods we are prone to scoff, a traditional Sunday roast dinner whets the appetite far more.
Many Brits say they enjoy Thai curries, chilli con carne, paella and Moroccan tagine. Especially after a night out. But in a study of 10,000 people to mark the 25th anniversary of BBC Good Food, they admit their best-loved meals are what Mum (or the wife) dishes up from her kitchen - and Sunday tops the bill. Roast dinner was named as the ultimate comfort food by 43% of those questioned, beating steak and chips, scones with jam and clotted cream and apple crumble into second, third and fourth place respectively.
Chocolate brownies, strawberry cheesecake and Victoria sponge were also among the list of favourites. Curiously, chicken tikka masala, long regarded by many as one of the most popular dishes for Brits, came in at a lowly No.14, having lost out to pizza, lasagne and spaghetti bolognaise. But when it comes to a takeaway, then fish-and-chips - once the ONLY takeaway in town - was beaten into second place by a Chinese meal, which 53% of people said they would rather order. And, in keeping with the national mood, a cup of tea remains the favourite way to shake the sleep out of your eyes in the morning, never mind the increasing number of fancy coffee shops on the high street. In fact, 41% of Brits prefer a good old-fashioned cuppa to start their day, compared with the 29% who settle for coffee to wake them up. The study follows the revelation that 10% of the British population cannot cook
a thing, including a disproportionate number of men, many of whom can’t even boil an egg. However, 52% of Brits say they can cook 10 or more dishes from scratch, while an impressive 32% claim to have a repertoire of 20 or more dishes. Despite our improving culinary skills, though, the microwave is the kitchen item people can’t live without. That’s why 56% choose it in preference to a kitchen knife or toaster. Around half of us sit down to eat as a family, but 67% make sure they are watching telly at the same time. The study also revealed that the horsemeat scandal has had little impact on people’s buying and eating habits. Although 42% said the scandal has made them pay more attention to where meat comes from, just 9% are eating less because they are worried about the quality. Also, 15% are now eating less meat than a year ago in an attempt to cut down on food bills, while 65% said they
“sometimes”, “rarely” or “never” visited their local high-street food shops. And 40% said it was down to the cost. Gillian Carter, the BBC Good Food editor, says: “The impact of the horsemeat scandal has meant that people are more concerned about where meat is coming from. “However, it is interesting to note that more people are cutting back on meat consumption because of concerns about cost rather than the scandal. “Butchers also don’t seem to be benefiting to any great extent. The vast majority of respondents hardly ever visit high street shops, with the perceived cost again being the most common reason. “What is of concern is that so many respondents say they are unable to cook a single recipe. “We know that cooking is a feel-good activity, with large numbers of respondents saying they felt happy, comforted or inspired when cooking. So the more we can encourage people to cook, the better.” Chef Tom Kerridge said he hoped to see more men master the basics in the kitchen. “We can see that, overall, the nation’s cooking ability is good” he added. “But there seems to be a group who haven’t ever learned the basics. “Yet cooking needn’t be a big chore and is something everyone can learn and enjoy the results.”

Jeep’s little wonder is set to rival ‘big boys’
THE traditional Jeep series has always been renowned as America’s big, flashy offroaders.
Now, though, the company have accepted they are rapidly being overtaken by the mini 4x4 market - the fastestgrowing European car sector. That can mean only one thing: Jeep are joining the “in crowd” and, thanks to their latest links with Fiat, they have access to plenty of small-car know-how. So it is no wonder their new Renegade will be produced at Fiat Chrysler’s plant in Melfi, Italy, alongside a forthcoming 4x4 derivative of the Fiat 500 called the 500X. The only question is whether the Renegade can make an impact on an already crowded market. Think Mini Countryman, Skoda Yeti, Peugeot 2008, Renault Captur, Nissan Juke and Ford Ecosport and you get the picture. Also, Jeep claim their new model “represents a new off-road benchmark”. The problem is, how many people actually want serious offroad capability, especially when most of their rivals have stuck to twowheel drive only? As you’d expect of a Jeep, the Renegade will be available in two and four-wheel drive and gets a low-range gear-
box, Hill-Descent Control and five different terrain modes. The flagship Trailhawk also gets extra ground clearance, skid plates, all-season tyres and a full-size spare wheel (the others get a can of filler). But whatever you want from Jeep’s little 4x4, it is certainly a head-turner. Under the bonnet there’s a choice of three petrol and three turbodiesels. The petrols comprise a 110bhp 1.6-litre and a 140bhp or 170bhp turbo-charged 1.4-litre. The latter is available
in two or four-wheel drive and can get from 0-60mph in 8.8secs before achieving a top speed of 121mph. The three diesels are a 120bhp 1.6-litre and a pair of 2.0-litres offering 140bhp or 170bhp. The less-powerful 2.0-litre can return 55.4mpg while the 1.6-litre produces 120g/km. Unfortunately, when rivals such as the Peugeot 2008 are achieving figures close to 100g/km and 80mpg, the Renegade figures should really be a lot more impressive. Jeep do not help themselves, either, with a be-
wildering choice of four gearboxes. There are five or six-speed manuals, a twin-clutch semiautomatic or a ninespeed, traditional automatic. On the road, the 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine is refined enough, but the ride is quite firm for a car at this level and doesn’t ride bumps or road imperfections as well as you’d expect. But there is little body roll. In contrast, the faster 170bhp, 2.0-litre turbodiesel rides better. But the combination of the new nine-speed gearbox and a slow reacting
stop-start system is not an entirely happy union. The Renegade’s interior is also enjoyable - a nice place to be. It’s comfortable and the build quality and materials are the best from Jeep for a good while. The colour schemes and flashes of exteriormatching paintwork work well, as do the exterior colours, with the car’s lines suiting bolder hues such as orange, red and khaki green. And there are optional, twin-removable sunroofs. The Renegade stands apart from the competition with its spacious
interior, with plenty of room front and back and there’s a sizeable boot. I’m nitpicking, but it probably isn’t the best car to drive in its class. But it has oodles of character and good looks, which are lacking from many rivals. For the American company’s first small car, it’s a pretty good effort - and you just know it will be more and more refined as time goes by. Prices should start at around £11.800, which sounds extremely reasonable for such a quality brand.

Whites’ supremacy
By Roscoe
CD Tenerife 2 Las Palmas 1 PRIDE. Passion. Performance. That’s how you would do a match report on Twitter!
I’ve seen a fair few Canarian derby matches, and last Sunday’s was up there with the very best. The match was broadcast nationally on Canal + - and both clubs did a great job of promoting football on our islands. The fans were top drawer. There were 3,000 visitors from Gran Canaria, most of whom were in their own wellguarded section, but there were pockets of them all over the stadium. For some reason some “fans” try to make out that there are rivers of blood and re-enactments of Bosworth Field whenever the two sides meet. I’ve seen bloodier Derby matches in Dorset between Weymouth and Yeovil. Sure, there are some catcalls and goading, but that’s it. Despite what any fans say. On the field, it was Position
easy to see why Las Palmas were the unbeaten leaders going into the match. They started with purpose and even a swagger. Tenerife were chasing shadows in the lunchtime heat and the visitors’ early opener was no surprise. Tenerife were caught ball-watching and, on the counter, they were a man light. All the defence shuffled left, but this just put Momo in peaceful isolation. A pinpoint cross found him with the freedom of Santa Cruz and he buried the ball past Rob-
erto. It was a poor start for Tenerife, and that familiar feeling swept the pit of the stomach. Just 15 minutes on the clock and we needed to do something we hadn’t done since 20th April. Score twice. The Las Palmas fans were in full voice and even though a section of the home fans kept up the chants, they were soon swamped by rival supporters. Tenerife needed a lift. A hero. And it came from an unlikely source. Iker Guarrotxena has made a decent start to life in

Santa Cruz. He is well thought of by parent club Atletic Bilbao, but it’s easy to forget that this is his first time at this level. All his pro career had been spent with the stiffs in Segunda B. He ghosted between playing left-wing, or what we now call No.10. Seeing plenty of the ball, he drifted in between roles and Las Palmas were unsure what to do. Zonal or man marking? Foot in, or stand off? This uncertainty gave Iker confidence and he grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck. Time after time, he scared Lopez into conceding a plethora of corners. The first, which Iker took, drifted into the near post. Keeper Raul was attracted it like a moth to a flame, but the youngster is not the tallest. Carlos Ruiz beat him to the ball only for the header to go over the top. But a marker had been laid down. A couple of minutes later, a corner from the other side saw Tenerife flood the near post only. The defence were happy to concede another corner and again it was near-stick delivery. It was scrambled away. Five minutes later, another corner down the Tenerife left. Iker put an arm in the air. Everyman and his dog knew where the ball was go-
ing. Dinked in to the edge of the six-yard area, Carlos Ruiz made the near-post run. He got the faintest of touches on the ball, which flicked off the swede of Sergio Araujo and sailed past Raul. And with it went Las Palmas’ chance of a famous win. The goal lifted Tenerife fans, the players and, it seems the ref. A video of Ricardo de Burgos’ performance should be shown to refs ahead of derby games. I’m not saying he got everything right and the late timewasting card for Roberto was silly, but he played a blinder. Late challenges and strong tackles were handled with a smile. And there were some meaty moments. At times, it was like something from the mid-Seventies, but De Burgos kept his head and, remarkably, so did the players. He let the game flow and this nearly led to Tenerife’s second goal. Suso gave David Simon such a torrid time that he was pulled at half-time. On this occasion, Moyano’s run played in Suso, and his back-post cross found the head of the unmarked Aridane. At the time, it looked a perfectly good goal and the linesman’s flag was harsh. On the TV replay, though, it looked correct by three vital inches. Tenerife finished the half strongly. Iker was causing havoc down the left and Vitolo was running midfield. He had waited 10 years for this Derby match and he was having his game of the season. In many ways, halftime was a shame for Tenerife, but they stayed on the bunny after the turn-around. Four minutes in and Suso did another trademark charge. Fernandez had barely warmed up and he was facing two white shirts. Moyano was the extra man and when the cross came in, Cristo Martin shinned the ball into the roof of the net. He had been quiet all game, but when it mattered he delivered. For a Tenerife-born lad, it doesn’t get any better!
This should have been the bugle blowing for a Las Palmas charge, but it never came. Paco Herrera threw on Gomez and the veteran Guzman, but to little effect. In fact, Tenerife boss Alvaro Cervera made the key changes. Ricardo shored up the midfield in place of the exhausted Iker, Maxi Perez injected fresh legs down the wing and the introduction of Uli Davila rubbed salt in the Las Palmas wounds. He, of course, famously scored the goal to deny them promotion last season. Despite the home dominance, you could feel the nerves as the clock ticked 90. They were going to be four very long minutes. Every Tenerife player was behind the ball and then, with 30 seconds remaining, Tenerife gave away a cheap freekick 25 yards from goal. Just 72 hours before the match, Roberto had lost his father. On the same day, Jacobo was injured in training, handing Roberto the keeper’s jersey. All through the match, I felt he would have a role to play in any win. And here it was. The last kick of the game. He lined up a five-man wall and pushed the defence to the 18-yard line. Nauzet placed the ball. Left-footed, he struck it sweetly and it drifted over the wall and towards the inside of the post. Roberto scrambled right. The dive was low and with an outstretched hand, he palmed it to safety. The whistle blew and the tears poured. What was it Sir Alex Ferguson said? “Football. Bloody hell.” Canarian Weekly ratings CD TENERIFE: Roberto 8, Moyano 8, Ruiz 7, Albizua 6, Camera 7, Suso 8, Vitolo 7, Sanz 6, Martin 6 (Maxi 75min 6), Guarrotxena 7 (Ricardo 64min 6’) Aridane 6 (Dávila 78min 5). Oasis Fm Fantasy League
Rooney’s Red is so awkward IT’S not easy managing a Premier League fantasy team … and at times it can be very frustrating.
Trying to secondguess team line-ups is a nightmare, especially with Champions League teams. Who would have thought that Sanchez would be rested by Arsenal? And that’s before your star player gets himself a stupid red card. It is these factors which are reflected in a
low point-scoring week in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League. The majority of the top strikers were firing blanks and, following Rooney’s Red, managers are now without him for the rest of the month. It could be time to shuffle the pack again and axe the flops. One or two of the results were stand-out enough for some of the lower-placed teams to provide a decent number of players to the point-scoring Team of the Week,
West Brom stood out in this respect with three players making the team. Crystal Palace had two players representing them and the steam-roller that is Chelsea also provided two. The rest came from Stoke, Everton, Sunderland and Manchester City. So it is all-change again at the top of the Oasis Fm league. Steve Snook proved to be a one-week wonder, and this week we have joint leaders. Mike Edens and Dan Lawton share top spot
with their teams, Mikehammered and Dan Utd. They both have 319 points, but it is certainly tight at the top with just 22 points in total separating the top 10 teams. As mentioned earlier, it was a low point-scoring week, but Tony Smith’s Team of the Week Macaroni’s Hammers amassed 61 points. Not sure he’d have thought West Brom’s Berahino would be his top pointscorer. In the battle at Oasis Fm towers, Chris Elkington is still out in
front. but by just three points from John Zammit. Roscoe is edging closer to those two, and Adi Benson had a good week
with the best points tally, enabling him to jump a few places. There are now just 30 points separating the four of them.

Shi nearly upsets Champions
AFTER last week’s strange week, it was more or less as you were in the Direct Telecom Pool League this time around.
Gaps are already starting to appear in the league tables, and a picture is forming of which teams are going to be battling at the top and which teams will battling at the bottom. In Division One, reigning champions Tenerife Hammers A played a rare Monday night match, giving them the opportunity to apply pressure on current leaders Gaffers A. They took on Palms B in what was to prove another tough night for them. The scoreline certainly flattered the Hammers with most of the frames being close-run. Palms B captain Shi was in sparkling form and the Hammers had to use all their experience and talent to take the points and move level with Gaffers. It was only to last 24 hours, though, as Gaffers A welcomed The Phoenix on Tuesday night. It was another barnstormer, with the Los Abrigos team not letting the league leaders have it all their own way. It was watertight all the way through but, unlike last week, Gaffers found a way to poke their noses in front to restored their three-point lead at the top. Palms Bar A stay in fourth spot after a dogfight of a match against Waterfall Rebels. At one point, Palms found themselves 3-5 down, but they still felt there was something in the contest.
They rallied and went into the last match 6-5 up. An amazing win was on the cards, only for the Gods to intervene. Their captain, Roscoe, had a night he will never forget, losing all three of his games on the black ball. In fact, when he had shots on the last ball, his opponent still had 6, 7 and 6 balls remaining. Dave, from the Rebels, didn’t care about that as he took the frame to steal a point. Inn the Pink A are just a place behind them, but they couldn’t capitalise on the Palms result after travelling down to Amarilla Golf to take on Terrace A. The Spoon Squad were buoyant after a win last week and raced into a 2-0 lead. Frames were traded and, going into the last section of the match, the home team were down 3-5 and looking like the Terrace A of old. A player short on the night, in stepped wildcard Eddie, who promptly broke and cleared up off the break to beat John: the Terrace were back in it. Eventually, it came down to the last frame. Inn the Pink were leading 6-5 and Dan was on for the win against Terrace captain Adi. But Adi dug deep and had Lady Luck on his side, eventually forcing Dan into a mistake. The black was rolled in and the Spoon Squad had a point. Terrace Bar B did better than their stablemates, taking on Atmosphere 13. The scores were level at 2-2, but Terrace took the next six frames for the win and another three points, keeping them nicely ahead of their A team. They are

going well! Down in Silencio it was derby night, with Exiles A taking on Exiles B for bar-bragging rights. The A side are Division One veterans, though, and they were certainly in no mood to lose this one. Despite some gamesmanship from Blair Bear (rumour has it he tried to stuff the pockets and spike the drinks) the A team were always in control. They took the points and the bragging rights, despite Blair beating Shammy twice. Boom! Treehouse A continued their winning streak with a routine
victory over Tenerife Hammers C. The opening four frames were close and the game was poised at 2-2. But Treehouse stepped up a gear and showed a little more skill than their opponents to seal victory. Down in Los Cristianos, Dreamers A took on The Peacocks in what turned out to be an evenly-matched contest. It was 2-2, then 4-4, eventually finishing 6-6 and a point apiece. In Division Two, it was top versus bottom and also happened to be a derby game between Sporting Jester A and Jester B. For-

tunately, it wasn’t a boxing match or the towel would have been chucked in early for the B team. The A side took an easy victory keeping them unbeaten in six games. Toscales Wildcards, looking to bounce straight back into the top division, moved back into second spot after a routine home win against Dreamers B. Shaun and the boys are playing good pool and ,apart from one loss, are keep Sporting Jester A firmly in their sights. Inkspots had been making good ground and are still in third spot, just, after a heavy defeat by Picasso’s A. Mike and his team found themselves 4-0 down. They took frame five but Picasso’s took the next two to ensure a point. And it wasn’t long before they had all three. Bluebell A, who will improve, had a chance to move above Inkspots into third place, but they also had a bad night at the office. Treehouse B were the visitors and showed

a little steel to keep Bluebell at bay, earning a creditable draw and a point. Inn the Pink B are still in the promotion mix and they took on one of their main rivals, James Place. Both teams came into this fixture unbeaten, so it was game on. Early frames were swapped and it was a really tight match. But eventually, the home team got their noses in front and took the win. The final two games of the night were also extremely tight, with both all-square. Waterfall Jokers took on Gaffers B and were soon 5-3 up, but Gaffers dug deep and took three of the last four to earn a solid point. The last game of the night was a bottomof-the-table clash between Tenerife Pool Tables and Toscales Beer Chuckers. Neither team had scored a point so far this season, so it seemed inevitable it would end all-square. But both teams will just be happy to be off the mark!

Dressed to thrill after a disaster By Adi Benson IT was another fascinating round of Premier League matches, and there are some tasty clashes before we head towards another frustrating free weekend, with more pointless internationals.
In last week’s Beat Benson, I was chinned … and beaten by a girl at that! As a forfeit for losing to Emma Benson, I must wear one of her dresses! Hopefully, I don’t have the same embarrassment this weekend as I take on Oasis Fm Drive-Time DJ Paul Breen-Turner. Swansea v Newcastle Swansea keep picking up the points, and Garry Monk couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season. They will feel they should have beaten Sunderland, but a point away from home after being reduced to 10 men will have been most welcome. You can tell they are enjoying playing football as a team because they are so easy on the eye. As for Newcastle? If they lose here, I don’t know where they go. They need goals and a win. Time to give Ayoze Perez a start after he hit four for the reserves in midweek? Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Draw Sunderland v Stoke The Black Cats have got to start their season sooner or later, surely? They are huffing and

puffing through games, and they are desperately short on goals. But you feel a win might just get them going. I have to say, Stoke and in particular Mark Hughes, have disappointed me thus far. A change in style was expected, and players were brought in to add more flair to the team. But all we have seen so far is the Stoke of old: tough tackling, long balls with little end-product. Prediction: Draw Beat Benson: Away win Liverpool v West Brom Liverpool have been a disappointment. It was always going to be difficult to replace Suarez, but manager Rodgers has endeavoured to improve the squad. Yet he can’t settle on his favoured team, which is causing the problems, and I feel the Champions League is the distraction. Going into this game, West Brom are above their opponents in the
league and are riding a wave of confidence after a solid three points against Burnley. If they can keep Berahino scoring, they may get something at Anfield. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Draw Hull v Crystal Palace Steve Bruce obviously decided in pre-season that Hull would have to score more goals. He bought a new forward line and it’s working. But their new-found attacking flair leaves them caught out as the back. They are leaking like the proverbial sieve. Neil Warnock last week secured his first Premier League win since I was a boy, and their counterattacking style could be made for this match. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Home win Leicester v Burnley One week you come from three-down and win against Man Utd, and the next week you are losing to Crystal Palace. Welcome to the madness that is the Premier League. After a loss, though, you just want to get back on the pitch, and Leicester will be raring to go this weekend. And a glance at their opposition will only add confidence that they can get back to winning ways. It is hard to see from the games played so far how Burnley are going to survive this season. Prediction: Home win
Beat Benson: Home win Aston Villa v Man City Villa had a great start to the season, but what a run of fixtures they are coming through, Arsenal, Chelsea and now City, so it was a good job they did start so well. That said, at times they defended well against Chelsea and gave a good account of themselves. But they need to be at the top of their game again. Actually, it could be a good time to play City, especially as they may have a European hangover. City will be prepared for this game, and they know that anything other than three points won’t be good enough, especially as Chelsea have a tough fixture. So this could be their chance to make up ground. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Away win Man Utd v Everton United seem to stumble from one week to the next: a loss against Leicester and then a narrow win over West Ham, which also saw them lose their captain for three games, thanks to Rooney’s red card. Their injury list is also getting longer and they are desperately short of defensive players throw into the mix that Everton have been somewhat of a bogey team and it could be another difficult week-
end for them. Everton took a point from the Merseyside derby with a fantastic, last-gasp Jagielka strike. But they played in Europe midweek and haven’t got the largest of squad. Tiredness could play a factor here. But it’s Man Utd, so they will be up for it. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Home win Chelsea v Arsenal Chelsea have passed all their tests so far and the way they play with such strength, it is difficult to imagine them getting beaten. There is such depth in their squad that they can rotate and it doesn’t weaken the team. And this will be the key to their season. Although, defensively, they have been a little weak at times, they can create and score goals seemingly at will. Arsenal have flattered to deceive again and have a habit of playing badly in these big games against title rivals. With one less day to rest after Champions League football, have they got a squad and team big enough to match Chelsea? Injuries are also mounting up as well! Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Home win Spurs v Soton It must be hard for a manager when he leaves a club to go to a so-called bigger outfit, only to see his former charges doing better! But that’s what we have
with these two, Pochettino jumped ship when he realised the Saints were selling what were supposedly their best players. He may well be regretting that decision now as Spurs are another team who haven’t started well. Things are nice and rosy, though, on the south coast as the Saints have replaced their best players with what looks like better operators - and the results just keep coming. They will relish this game! Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Draw West Ham v QPR The Hammers seem to be getting better, week in week out, and will be disappointed they didn’t get at least a point against Man Utd. The fans and owners supposedly demanded more attractive football, and Big Sam is really trying to get his team to do just that. Pace is the key and Stewart Downing for one, has embraced this and looks back to his best form. Harry Redknapp will be welcomed back to Upton Park by the fans, but they won’t be in that generous a mood when it comes to the game. Rangers look set for a season-long relegation battle and it’s hard to see whether there are three teams worse than them, which is the only way they will stay up. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Home win
