Severe floods in the North, not our fault, says Cabildo Continude from front page. The first real storm of the season may have seen nothing more than heavy rain here in the South. But in Santa Cruz, there were some real horror stories. A 56-year-old women died from a heart attack after being swept under a car in fast-moving flood water. That this was the only fatality is nothing short of a miracle. As the pictures show, it could have been far worse. Officially, 140 litres of water fell per squaremetre in Santa Cruz. This is the equivalent of emptying 28 large fivelitre bottles of water on one large tile. Of course the theory is that you do it for every tile in the city. While it’s a huge amount of rain, it is not even close to last November’s 180 litres, which caused chaos in the South, or the 230 litres from March 2002. That deadly storm led to calls for an improved infrastructure as the public struggled to get an answer to one simple question: “Why does the Island fall apart when it rains?” While there have been improvements since 2002, most noticeably in the South, where Sunday’s storms caused little damage, there are still underlying mainstream problems. Reports have put the cost of the latest storm at anything from 15 million to 30 million euros. But whatever the price, it could easily have been spent of prevention. The blame game started almost immediately with politicians pointing the finger at AEMET, the national meteorological service, for under-estimating the storm’s strength. The weathermen issued a yellow alert, but a storm of this size was comfortably an amber alert case. Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso has since stated that a new state-of-the-art satellite service, with “super computers”, will be purchased and installed to help better understand storms and their inten-
sity. That’s a step in the right direction, but why was this not budgeted and implemented before? For AEMET the storm, though severe, was given the correct exposure. The public and the powers that be knew days in advance that it was coming. In fact, it must be said that the “guts” of the storm were scheduled to hit further south rather than Santa Cruz. Alonso has heavily criticised AEMET’s poor forecasting, without quite explaining what else it could have done. After all, it’s not the weathermen’s job to prevent flooding! Alonso has tried to come up with some longterm solutions this week, but without much joy. At a press conference he said that from his experience of living in Brussels, Santa Cruz should “close tunnels when heavy rains occur in order to ensure the safety of people”. Quite how he proposes to adapt the current tunnels into watertight units and how it happens - let alone who pays for it was skipped over. And what of those people who live higher up and the water comes sweeping down their
non-tunnelled streets? The image of the tunnel flooded at the bottom of the city (pictured) shows the full problem. Alonso said: “The good work of the water infrastructure undertaken in recent years, with an investment of 55m, of which 37m euros came from the Cabildo, has paid off. But it is a hard job as the city is built on a slope, and problems will always persist.” Well, Cabildo money is taxpayer money and, as the pictures show, the city was still under water. To kind of shrug the shoulders and say there will always be problems with a city built on a hill
by the sea, is stunning. A three-year-old knows what will happen when the rains come. It has not been Alonso’s best week. Jesus Morales, Councillor in charge of water matters, who was also present at the press conference, spoke in a similar way, saying there was a real need for proper urban planning in Santa Cruz. Never! He also blamed the physical factors such as the topography of the Island, Santa Cruz’s steep slopes, and the many ravines. Tenerife’s CCN leader, Benito Codina, was
rightly scathing of the Cabildo and the President. He called for an urgent budget review and a priority of spending on maintenance and improvement of roads, as requested by Alonso’s political rivals the PP, rather than “more lavish spending on propaganda and funding of pointless events”. Codina pointed out: “It is not acceptable that an island which basically lives off tourism can function where the roads are the only means of mobility. And yet the infrastructure has, in some cases, to be considered third world.” It has to be said that Codina has nailed it. Alonso would, correctly, point to the previously-announced tender for road work, which is scheduled to start in early 2015. This sees over 3m euros being spent to upgrade the road infrastructure in some older areas. However this work, which could have been done in the summer, was not considered a priority. This covers work in areas such as Barrack de Badajoz,
Guía de Isora and Guaza here in the South. The Island, like the rest of the Canaries and the mainland, is slowly finding its feet after the deep financial crisis. And the once-a-year holiday-makers can see the progress being made. But it’s clear to see that there is still much work to do. Nobody wants public budget cuts, but to have them in a road infrastructure that clearly needs upgrading is ridiculous. Tenerife is a volcanic island filed with ravines and peaks - and the topography is always going to cause problems during severe weather. But this happens in many other areas of the world and a solution needs to be found - and quickly! The shrugging of the shoulders and saying, “That’s just the way it is”, doesn’t fly in 2014. A drainage solution to heavy and extreme rainfall must be the No.1 priority. And it needs to be worked on now, before the next killer storm blows in from the Atlantic!

Tourists simply can’t stay away! TOURISM is booming in the Canary Islands, with visitors pouring in all the time and that is official!
A record number of foreign tourists arrived in the first nine months of 2014, and there is no suggestion that the flood is drying up. A total of 8,363,317 foreign tourists checked in from 1st January to the end of September, which was a massive 11.4% more than a year ago, and 2013’s figures were 10% higher than the year before. According to the latest survey of tourist movements at the border by official statisticians Frontur, our archipelago region recorded the greatest growth.
The Canaries were 4% higher than the national average, and even the national figures make remarkable reading Spain saw an impressive 7.4% like-for-like leap, which equates to over 52 million international tourists passing through Customs so far this year. The data from Frontur, produced and published by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism, shows that the Canary Islands received a total of 845,761 foreign visitors in September alone, which was 7.5% more than in the same month last year. This increase was mainly through increased British arrivals, while the French and German markets also recorded remarkable progress. And some people still claim our Island is quiet!
President Carol’s call to European Citizens CAROL Salisbury Chappell, new President of the Canary Islands’ European Citizens Group, has already planned six monthly meetings in advance.
Carol, better known to Canarian Weekly readers as a fund-raiser extraordinary after collecting thousands of euros for a “cancer bus” for sufferers, who had their transport funding withdrawn. It means they have had to make their own way to and from Candelaria Hospital for treatment. “I’ve been given all the praise, but I actually had great support from a friend, who was also a sufferer,” said Carol. “And she is still working hard to raise funds for the bus, which will be an operation soon.”
Meanwhile, her first outing in charge of the ECG is on Wednesday (29th Oct) at Los Cristianos Cultural Centre, where the British Consulate team are her first guest speakers. The meeting starts at 7.30 pm and the team, led by Vice-Consul Helen Keating, will explain exactly how they can help British citizens when necessary. Members of the audience will be able to write questions on Feedback forms - which will be supplied - for the team to take away and answer by email within 21 days. . “Hopefully, they will have some interesting questions,” says Carol, who is expecting a bumper crowd to support her first venture at the helm. And that’s not all! Carol and her committee have also invited prominent speaker Ros Jeffery, a church minister who has assisted people in need for
many years, particularly women imprisoned here. Ros runs a charity called SHE, which supports women and girls who have been abused, and her aim at the meeting, as always, is to make people aware that there is an organisation available to help them with their problems. She is an accomplished speaker and knows the British Consul team personally because they have been associated with her work in the past. Carol adds: “We have had similar meetings in the past and usually attract a full house, so to avoid people turning up on the evening and unable to get in, we would appreciate if those interested would leave their names and phone numbers on these email addresses: europeancitizens23@ yahoo.com or carolchappell2004@yahoo. com
Couples have a 10-year itch! THE average marriage in Spain lasts 15.2 years, although that statistic is not strictly true because it’s taking into account the actual time between the “I do” and the official “Sign here to finalise the divorce”. According to data collected by the National Institute of Statistics it is estimated that, on average, every marriage takes 5.5 years to dissolve from separation to decree absolute. So this suggests the average “working” marriage is now around 10 years, which compares favourably with the US. There, the average “active” marriage spans eight years and in Australia, the total is 8.7 years. But the Brits stick it out longer - 11.7 years on average. But none of these figures is, of course, anywhere near full term. Overall, three out of 10 divorces came after 20
years of marriage, and 20% lasted between five years and a decade. For separations, 48.2% of the marriages lasted more than 20 years and 15.6% between five and 10. In 2013 in Spain, most married couples split which led to divorce proceedings - when the man was between 40-49 and the woman between 3039 years. The statistics also show that 75.4% of divorces and 83.9% of separations in 2013 were consensual. Six in 10 broken marriages had produced children and in 48% of cases, the kids were under 16.
Also, the custody of the children was awarded to the mother in 76.2% of cases, which was lower than in the previous year (79.6%). Just 5.5% of the children ended up in the sole custody of the man. With a national average of 2.1 annulments, separations and divorces per 1,000 inhabitants in Spain, the region recording the highest levels were the Canary Islands at 3.0, which was just ahead of Ceuta (2.8) and Catalonia (2.5). By contrast, those who had the lowest rates were Extremadura (1.4) and the Basque Country (all 1.7).

Adeje’s youthful learning powers THE “Education in values for Adeje’s young people” programme has been launched for the fourth consecutive year.
To underline its importance, Adeje Mayor Jose Miguel Rodríguez Fragat said: “This programme is now part of our Convivencia/Together 10/10 initiative, which has five basic pillars: sharing Adeje with the over 120 nationalities who live here; emphasis on the person; interchange of cultures, ideas, languages; communal shared spaces and education.” He added: “Equality is something we need to see across the board, ibecause it has implications in all areas and departments that are at the disposal of Adeje residents. “We want all our residents to come together
so that we can grow as a society, improve and build a future for the next generations. “Under the umbrella of co-existence, we want to build a better place to live. Since we began this initiative, we have started a series of actions, helping individuals grow through the exchange of ideas and strengthen as people. “And the people are the motor, the axis, the backbone which will make advancement in Adeje possible. We also want to see education playing a hugely-important part of this project, which will help us understand all people who live in Adeje.” Regarding the education programme in values for Adeje’s youth, the Mayor said: “We are emphasising events that help educate through awareness-raising, using real examples of discrimination and inequality which many of our young people ex-
perience in their daily lives, in schools for instance.” He added that all the planned actions fall under the current strategic plan for equal opportunities for men and women in Adeje. Under the Education in Values programme, a number of plans are being developed to pro-
mote equality among the borough’s youngsters. To this end, there is co-ordination with the education centres, plus a training and awareness programme for students, teachers and the parents’ associations. Rodríguez Fraga said: “The planned strategies are designed to improve
the quality of life and co-existence both inside and outside our schools. At the same time, they are designed to meet a need identified as important by the directors of our schools.” The education programme is divided into seven units, which will run throughout the 2014/2015 academic
year: bullying prevention (October), prevention of domestic/ couple violence (October-November), basic sex education (December-February), prevention of drugtaking( November-December), prevention of unwanted pregnancies (December-February), and prevention of homophobia and transphobia (May). Each unit is independent and can be requested separately by the schools from the Council. And each one is also designed to meet the needs of the entire education process, including sections for students, training for the teachers imparting the unit, and workshops for families. The first such workshop, on the prevention of bullying in schools, will be held in the CDTCA on Thursday (30th Oct) at 6pm. Entry is free, but places are limited.

‘Honest’ Council official sacked for being a mum A MADRID municipal worker, who ran the district’s legal services department for 10 years, has been dismissed allegedly because she has a small child.
Her boss, Popular Party (PP) councillor Ángel Donesteve, who heads the city’s Hortaleza district, said “she would rather balance her personal and family life”. For the last two years, the woman has served as district secretary, the third-most-important
position in the local administration. Donesteve called her “an honest, public servant who has done her work very well. Thanks to her, the administrative output of the legal department has increased by 50%”. He became a Madrid councillor on 30th January 2013. Though initially left out of the Council when the PP won local elections in 2011 (the party secured 31 seats and he was 41st on the list), subsequent resignations and refusals by other party members opened the door for him. Previously, Donesteve had worked as a politi-
cal advisor in the Salamanca district. These positions are personal appointments whose holders do not have to pass a relevant public examination but are, nevertheless, funded with public money. As such, his salary was 50,500 euros. But as councillor, Donesteve makes 91,780 euros. Yet the councillor, who has the power to appoint and dismiss the district secretary as he sees fit, justified her sacking with the following argument: “I was delighted when she happily became a mother a year ago. “But right now, I prefer to have maximum per-
formance. I only have eight months left here at the most, so I want the utmost efficiency from the entire district team.” Donesteve, whose district has a population of 174,000, added: “I feel that the residents of Hortaleza deserve complete dedication.” He also happens to sit on the Family and Social Affairs Committee of the Madrid City Council. Since having her child, the employee never asked to work reduced hours; nor did she apply for any measure aimed at balancing work and family life. She put in her regular
8am-3.30pm shift, and also did additional afternoon work. Since her dismissal as district secretary several days ago, she has been on sick leave with anxiety. She has decided not to return to her post in the legal department because this position also answers to the councillor; instead, she is awaiting a new appointment at a different city agency. Donesteve has since sent a note to Spanish newspaper El País, apologising to the municipal worker “insofar as it might have been construed that the reason for dismissing her was based on her moth-
erhood. It should not be construed in this manner at all.” But opposition groups in the Madrid Council - the Socialists, United Left and Union, Progress & Democracy criticised Donesteve’s decision. Jaime Lissavetzky, local Socialist spokesman, said it violated labour law and represented “discriminatory exclusion”. He added: “The PP is cutting back on kindergartens and on social assistance to the elderly. And, at the same time, it is preventing people from balancing their work and family lives.”
Ain’t gonna rain on this parade! WHEN it rains here, it pours. And for those who believe the Canarians are simply scared of a few drops of rain, last Sunday’s earlymorning, electric thunderstorm, and daylong downpour, proved that’s not always the case. In Adeje, while the problems were not as grave as in the north of Tenerife, the council had the foresight to cancel a number of public events scheduled to end the Patronal Fiestas. And while there were a few Facebook grumbles, most people agreed that the right decision was taken. So this weekend, from today (Friday) to Sunday, the fiesta fun continues. The Miss Sur Gala event takes place tonight in the spectacular Plaza de España setting, from 9.30pm. And organiser Sandro Pérgola is adamant that this is much more than a conventional beauty show. “Miss Sur stands out as different and has reinvented the way these events are being organ-
ised,” he stressed. And of last Friday’s postponement (with the 22 contestants getting ready) he said it was absolutely the right decision, adding that the safety of people came first. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga believes this competition is important because, he says: “We need elements that unify our diverse society and at the same time, value our individuals.” He added that the event - entry is free - was also a vehicle for local businesses and bodies to promote themselves
to the public. Tomorrow (Saturday), also in the Plaza de España, there is a “Verbena”, a street dance/party, with some great bands playing from 10pm to midnight. These are family fun events and with bars selling drinks and snacks - a super way to spend Saturday evening. The other plus is that the temporary fairground in the parking lot behind Adeje Cultural Centre has continued for the week because of the suspended events. So there is still lots for the kids to do, as well
as candy-floss at every corner! On Sunday the Fiestas finally come to an end with a cattle fair in the small park, up from the main post office at 10am, and the Romería starting at 1pm after Mass in the parish church. If you have never attended a Romería, this is a good place to start. Oxen-drawn carts will amble up the main Calle Grande, followed by people from different collectives in traditional Canarian dress, handing out wee glasses of wine and some local nibbles. What’s not to like!

The fame game! Ladies, now you know how to get that free facelift!
As Renee Zellweger explained: “I’m living a more fulfilling life and I’m thrilled that perhaps it shows.”
Perhaps? “I’m glad folks think I look different!” The Hollywood A-lister says that any aesthetic changes reflect, and I quote, her “newfound inner positivity and contentment”, after having re-adjusted her work to life balance. So, nothing to do with a surgeon’s knife and, maybe, a craving for anonymity? When I read the story, I did wonder how she got on the red carpet for the ‘Elle Women in Hollywood Awards’. I assume she didn’t
have a ticket, so how would you recognise the Oscar-winning actress? It reminded me of when I use to work the Premier League beat. One day, after an Arsenal win, I was interviewing a couple of the players in the tunnel. Patrick Vieira was always a good guy, but the goalscoring match-winner, Sylvain Wiltord, was much harder work with his dodgy English. Later that night, I was in a bar with a few friends when, and I swear this is true, I noticed Vieira at the end of the bar. I waved and he came over clutching a Tia Maria and Coke. “That was a fun interview today” he said and ordered a round of drinks. My mate was a little star-struck. So I introduced him to Patrick and his ‘friend’ Sylvain. “Nah, that’s not Wiltord. He’s too small.” My friend wasn’t having it. The Arsenal lads found it funny and swiftly went back to their party. All week, my pal was adamant it was a wind-up. Vieira, of course, is a household name, while today, I reckon few football fans would recognise Wiltord. Being famous and not recognised. The A-list dream!

The extravaganza begins tonight (Friday) at 9pm and coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Canary Islands Brewing Company (Compañía Cervecera de Canarias). It is organised by the Autonomous Organisation of Events and Recreation (OAFAR) City Hall, and is expected to be the biggest and best yet in the Island’s capital. Fiestas’ Councillor Fernando Ballesteros said: “We want to commemorate this 75th anniversary in style. “We want everyone to attend this festival, which is an opportunity to celebrate, not only for those who enjoy beer but also as a meeting point for many families and friends.
“Live music in a way, helps revitalise the city, which this weekend will bring together the community and more than 12,000 cruise passengers, who will be in Santa Cruz this weekend. “And the revenue from ticket sales will go to charitable organisations.” The festival, which runs from Friday until Sunday, showcases a
wide range of international beers, including Italian, Czech, American and Irish brands, plus others which are native to the Canary Islands. The event will be accompanied by live performances and sets from various DJs. Organiser Luis Durango said: “This festival will show the history of beer, through an exhibi-
tion that will reveal the evolution of the logo and the bottle itself. “There will also be tastings and presentations of limited-edition beers specially created for this occasion.” It kicks off this evening, and Saturday and Sunday sessions will begin at noon. Today and tomorrow (Saturday), the closing bell will ring at midnight, while Sunday is scheduled for a 10pm finish. Admission is a euro, while children have free access, provided they are accompanied by their parents. The Beer Festival Santa Cruz features 12 tents, displaying various types of beer! These are brilliantly priced at just a euro, or 1.5 euros, according to their origin. Tapas will cost two euros and event organisers estimate that around 15,000 people will visit the event, in Plaza de la Alameda, in the centre of Santa Cruz, over the weekend.

Still no peace from ETA BASQUE separatist group ETA vowed three years ago that it was ending a secessionist campaign in Spain after more than 40 years.
But lasting peace is not a given. The Spanish government wants the group dissolved as a precursor to peace talks. But ETA still exists and the logjam has prevented western Europe’s last major armed secessionist movement from ending, in letter and spirit. ETA is blamed for the killing of 829 people in a long campaign of bombings and shootings for an independent homeland in parts of northern Spain and southern France. On 20th October 2011, it declared a “definitive end” to armed activity. And in February this year, international monitors released But the group, greatly weakened by the arrest of its top leaders, has not formally disbanded, despite demands by the Spanish and French governments. “The process is deadlocked,” said analyst Mikel Buesa, a Madrid university professor who specialises in terrorism. “But the military defeat of ETA has been confirmed over the past three years.” A French expert who
has written several books on ETA echoed his feelings. “There are only about 15 or 20 active ETA members on the warpath and not behind bars,” said Jean Chalvidant. In July, ETA said it had dismantled the “logistical and operational structures” of its armed campaign in a step towards full disarmament. “Their fight has now moved to a political level,” added Chalvidant. Non-violent leftist Basque nationalist parties have gained political influence and increasing power through regional elections in the region. But for now, the biggest stumbling block in the peace process is the thorny question of prisoners. According to a count by pro-prisoners’ group Etxerat, there were about 470 ETA members jailed in 76 prisons, including some 100 incarcerated in France. Madrid has notably refused to budge on one of ETA’s most sensitive demands: the return of imprisoned ETA members to the Basque country. ETA members have tried to gain concessions from the Spanish Government over prison conditions, outraging victims’ families. Buesa said a possible way out of the deadlock could be a law like the one Italy enacted, trimming jail sentences for Red Brigade members who wreaked
havoc in the Seventies. Inigo Urkullu, head of the Basque Government, recently told Spanish daily El Pais that the situation had changed in the Basque region over the past three years, with the nationalist left having accepted Madrid’s “legality”. ETA was formed in 1959 during the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco by a group of Basque nationalist students. It carried out its last known deadly attack in 2009, when it killed two police officers by placing a bomb under their car in Majorca.
Police nab ETA woman A WOMAN attached to terrorist group ETA has been arrested by Guardia Civil officers in Alicante.
Nagore Múgica was nabbed as she visited her partner and ETA terrorist, Juan Carlos Iglesias Chouzas “Gadafi”, who is serving out his sentence at the Alicante II penitentiary centre. Nagore Múgica joined the Txalaparta ETA cell in 1990, together with Óscar Abad Palacios, José Ramón
Martínez García and Francisco Javier Goitia Elorza, and took part in some 15 attacks in the province of Biscay on vehicle showrooms, bars accused by ETA of drug-trafficking, Guardia Civil officers and railway lines, among other targets. On 25th October 1991, an explosive device exploded in a house in Bilbao (Biscay), killing a member of the Txalaparta cell, Francisco Javier Goitia, who was Múgica’s partner at the time. She fled to France, where she was taken in
by the terrorist gang’s underground network there. Múgica moved to Mexico in 1995 with Juan Carlos Iglesias Chouzas, returning on 25th May 1996 to France, where she was arrested at RoisyCharles de Gaulle Airport. In October 1998, she was sentenced in France to six years in prison for criminal conspiracy and storing explosives. Two years later, she was extradited to Spain and committed to the country’s prison system.
On 4th February 2003, she was sentenced to eight years in prison for storing explosives an offence committed during her membership of the Txalaparta cell. On 30th October the same year, the Supreme Court upheld the sentence handed down by the National High Court. And on 14th February 2011, she was released after serving her time. But last week, an arrest warrant was issued, under which she has been arrested by the Guardia Civil.

A SPANISH nurse, said to be the first person to contract Ebola outside West Africa, has now tested negative for the virus.
The result of a blood test, says the Spanish Government, proves that Teresa Romero, 44, is no longer infected. A statement said Ms Romero’s immune system had eliminated the virus from her body, although a second test would shortly be done to be absolutely sure. Ms Romero contracted the virus earlier this month in a Madrid hospital when treating two infected missionary priests. They had been repatriated from West Africa and, subsequently, died - just two from the 4,500plus across the country who have also lost their lives through Ebola.. The nurse has been treated at Madrid’s Carlos III hospital - where she had been working and, reportedly, received a human serum containing antibodies from Ebola survivors. Her health is now said to be “developing favourably”. Her husband, Javier Li-

mon, was also placed in isolation, while the couple’s dog, Excalibur, was put down as a precaution, triggering outrage among animal-rights activists. Javier remains under under observation in quarantine, along with 14 other people, but they have displayed no symptoms so far, said a hospital spokesperson. The incubation period for Ebola can last up to three weeks. Meanwhile, European foreign ministers met in Luxembourg on Monday to discuss how to strengthen their response to the threat posed by the spread of the Ebola virus. European countries have committed more than 500m euros (£400m), but the UK is pressing to double that sum. The money is being sought to help reinforce over-stretched healthcare systems in the three
main counties affected, and to mitigate the damage Ebola is doing to their economies. One item of good news came on Monday when the World Health Organisation declared Nigeria to be free of Ebola officially, after six weeks with no reported cases. Senegal had already been given the green light. A Liberian diplomat brought the virus to the commercial capital Lagos in July, but the out-
break was contained, with only 20 known cases and eight deaths. WHO representative Rui Gama Vaz, from the capital, Abuja, said it was a “spectacular success story”. “The virus is gone for now,” he said. “The outbreak in Nigeria has been defeated, which shows to the world that Ebola can be contained. But we must be clear that we have only won a battle. The war will only end when West Africa is also declared free of Ebola.” The outbreak has been confined mostly to Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone, where some 70% of those infected have died. In another development, US health officials confirmed that 43 people being monitored closely after coming into contact with Ebola victim Thomas Eric Duncan had been given the all-clear. They were subject to twice-daily monitoring
during the 21-day incubation period. However, others who cared for Mr Duncan remain at risk, including two nurses he infected and their close contacts. Up to 120 people are still being monitored, and their waiting period is set to end on 7th November. The Nigerian outbreak began when Patrick Sawyer, an AmericanLiberian citizen, was diagnosed with the illness in July. Nigeria declared a national public health emergency and Mr Sawyer later died of the disease, followed by seven nationals. These included Dr Ameyo Stella Adadevoh, who diagnosed Mr Sawyer and is credited with helping to contain the outbreak at its source. John Vertefeuille, from the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said Nigeria had taken the
right steps to contain the outbreak. “Nigeria acted quickly and early and on a large scale,” he said. Nkosazana DlaminiZuma, who chairs the African Union Commission, told the BBC that countries affected by Ebola would have to deal with the consequences for years. “A lot of things are almost at a standstill.,” she said. “They are not going to be producing as much food as they would have produced, “They are diverting some of the money for education to other things to stamp out the epidemic.” British Ebola survivor Will Pooley has flown fback to West Africa, where he caught the disease, to rejoin the Ebola battle. The 29-year-old nurse, “delighted” to return to Sierra Leone, is looking forward to doing all he could “to prevent as many unnecessary deaths as possible”. Mr Pooley, the first confirmed Briton to contract Ebola, was flown back to the UK in August. He was treated with the experimental drug ZMapp at London’s Royal Free Hospital.

Folk Festival returns
THE seventh edition of the Canarias Folk Festival is back, and it promises to be the biggest and best yet, running until 27th March next year.
The Plaza de Los Cristianos had the honour of hosting the opening night, initiated by Arona Tourist Board Arona, chaired by Evelin Santos. The Folk Fest will be held every Thursday in the Plaza de La Pescadora (along the Los Cristianos seafront),
every Friday at City Centre Square Mall (Playa de Las Americas) and the second Saturday of each month at the Rambla de Las Galletas. Groups taking part are the Municipal School of Folk-
lore and Folk Groups Arona I’gara, and Punta Scratch Verodal, plus many guest artistes. The events will also have locally-produced food and drink available to add to the enjoyment!
That top taste of mountain rambling ADEJE’S Together 10/10 campaign is organising a walk tomorrow (Saturday), called “Making the most of the forest”, which will take ramblers from Ifonche, to el Aserradero and, finally, La Quinta. The campaign, under Councillor Esther Rivero Vargas, is organised by the Council’s Department of the Environment and Sustainable Development, The Councillor said: “This initiative was such that once the mountain walks in the borough had been regulated and signposted, we were able to propose a series of alternative routes, inviting people to get to know our natural zones and the mountain characteristics. “We wanted to develop more than just another rural walk, and what we
are doing here is showing off the indigenous elements of the area, and the richness of our natural heritage. “Once people get to know the various protected zones of Adeje, they will learn to enjoy and care for them.” During the walk there will be two guides, Rafael Morales Siverio and Sebastián López Ramírez, who will explain in Spanish, “through their living testimonies and experiences”, how and why these paths were used in the past. As well as getting to know the countryside, the walkers will also experience the hospitality of La Quinta residents. They will also be invited to take part in a tasting event on the patio of a home there. “The best way to learn
the stories of pathways and their use in the past is from the people of the region,” added Cllr Rivero Vargas. The walk should last about six hours and is listed as one of medium difficulty. Wear appropriate shoes or waterproof hiking boots - if possible, high enough to protect ankles. You should also use sun protection and wear sunglasses and a hat. If you have a hiking stick, a waterproof jacket and energy foods (dry fruits, biscuits, etc.), you should also bring them, as well as water – 1½ litres will be adequate. If you would like to take part, sign up today (Friday) at the Citizens’ Office - the SAC, in the main council building, Places are limited to 25.

Killer Pistorius gets five years ...but could serve 10 months D I S A B L E D South African athlete Oscar Pistorius has been given a five-year jail sentence for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
He was convicted of culpable homicide but cleared of murder, and Judge Thokozile Masipa also gave Pistorius a three-year suspended sentence for a firearms charge. Prosecutors at Pretoria High Court had called for a minimum 10-year term, while the defence argued for community service and house arrest. The parents of Reeva said they were happy with the sentence and relieved the case was over. Her mother, June, said: “Justice has been served.” Pistorius, the Paralympic sprint champion who also competed in the 2012 Olympic Games, showed little reaction to the sentence other than to wipe his eyes before being led away. Defence lawyer Barry Roux said his client, who shot dead his girlfriend on St Valentine’s Day last year, was expected to serve 10 months in prison, with the rest under house arrest. Dup De Bruyn, a lawyer for the Steenkamp family, told Reuters that “justice was served”, although he believed Pistorius would probably serve
two years. Arnold Pistorius, the runner’s uncle, said: “We accept the judgement. Oscar will embrace the opportunity to pay back to society, and I hope he will begin his own healing process.” He appealed to the media to accept the court ruling and added: “Let us move forward in this process and give us some degree of dignity and privacy.” He said the family would support and guide the athlete as he served his sentence.
The BBC’s Nomsa Maseko, outside court, said opinion there was divided on the sentence, some saying it was too light, and others that it was fair. Pistorius was taken away from court in a police van to Pretoria’s Kgosi Mampuru prison. He will have been evaluated over the next few hours to decide where he would stay, based on his disability. Judge Masipa considered her sentence to be “fair and just, both to society and to the ac-
cused”. She added: “A non-custodial sentence would send the wrong message to the community. On the other hand, a long sentence would not be appropriate, either, as it would lack the element of mercy.” The Judge said that nothing she could say or do could bring back Reeva Steenkamp, “but, hopefully, this judgement on sentence shall provide some sort of closure for the family”. The judge began reading her decision by
saying there must be a balance between retribution, deterrence and rehabilitation. In summarising the evidence, she described defence witness and social worker Annette Vergeer as “slapdash and disappointing”. Ms Vergeer had argued that Pistorius would be “a lot more vulnerable than the normal man” in jail. But Judge Masipa said she was sure prisons were equipped to cater for the requirements of a special-needs inmate.
She also had a “feeling of unease” at what she called an over-emphasis on the athlete’s vulnerability. But she said Pistorius had made an “enormous contribution to society” in his charity work, and in changing the public perception of disability. The judge also said: “It would be a sad day for this country if an impression were to be created that there was one law for the poor and disadvantaged, and another for the rich and famous.” The three-year suspended term was for unlawfully firing a gun in a restaurant - a separate incident before the Steenkamp killing. Yet the case may not be over because both prosecution and defence have the right to appeal. The International Paralympic Committee told the BBC it would not allow Pistorius to run at any of its events for five years, even if he were released early. The 27-year-old, an amputee sprinter who became the first athlete to compete in the Olympic and Paralympic Games, killed Ms Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year. He says he shot her by mistake, fearing there was an intruder in his Pretoria house. Ms Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model, reality TV star and law graduate, was hit three times by bullets fired by Pistorius through a toilet door.

Gay couple in school clash over their child A PRIVATE school, alleged to have refused to enrol a gay couple’s child, has led to the principal and head of admissions facing legal action. When Iván Vallejo and Ricardo Lucas, parents through a surrogate mother in the US, first tried to sign their son up at the Yago School two years ago, they were told there were no more available spots. They had clearly indicated that they were a same-sex couple, and when they later tried again - without mentioning their family situation the admissions office said it would not be a problem enroling their child, who was then three. Now, the Seville provincial court has decided that the principal and the admissions chief may have been guilty of a “crime against fundamental rights and public liberties guaranteed by the Constitution”. Three judges believe there is preliminary evidence to suggest that “the refusal to enrollthe minor was due to his parents’ sexual condition”. In their written decision, the judges state
that Vallejo and Lucas wrote an email to the school in September 2011 requesting their child to be admitted the following school year, without concealing their family situation. The school replied saying there were no places left and that they should try again the following year. In February 2012, the couple wrote another email and received the same reply. The couple became suspicious when other families told them the school was admitting new students. They contacted the admissions office again, this time failing to mention that the child had two fathers. They were immediately given an appointment for 16th February and told in person that there were spots left for the 2012-2013 school year. Asked about the previous refusals, admissions chief Maravillas R, sister of the principal, Ramón R, said it was an “administrative misunderstanding”. Yet four days later, she telephoned to say that, again, there were no spots available for their son.
A football fan’s delight TENERIFE’S annual Soccer Experience International 7s Tournament is back for an eighth year - and promises to be another great weekend.
Former England international Neil Webb heads the list of former pro players who will battle it out with the finest Tenerife has to offer at Adeje Stadium from 31st October to 1st November. The ex-Man United midfielder is joined by former Nottingham Forest striker David John-
son, Gary Bull, Steve Guinan, along with recently-retired Paul McKenna and Craig Armstrong. Former Rangers star and Holland international Michael Mols will lace up his boots, along with Danny Lennon, ex-Raith and Partick Thistle midfielder, and recent St Mirren manager. Former Burnley and Wigan assistant boss Sandy Stewart will be alongside ex-Hearts forward Jose Quitongo. And there are more star names to be confirmed. If you have followed the tournament over the last years you will have noted just how good the
local teams are. These are your teams, made up of dads and brothers and mates, who work and live here in Tenerife. These local teams are far from overwhelmed at the thought of playing alongside, or against, some of the game’s big names of yesteryear, and take the challenge really seriously. Organiser Martin Tierney said: “This is a great chance for a team of local players to join in a fun competition and meet some new people and challenges. “Some of the teams are also looking for extra players, so if you would like to play, please get in touch. It doesn’t mat-
ter what language you speak, we all speak football on the pitch.” Adeje Stadium is open throughout the tournament, FREE to anyone who would like to come along and watch. It’s easy to find at the Adeje Las Torres Sports Pavilion. Exit 79B for Los Olivos/Las Nieves, Adeje on the TF1. For more information and particularly if you are a player who would like to take part, or the parents of a child who would like to be a ballboy or ballgirl, call or text 654 200 470, and check out the website: www.socexp.com or email : info@socexp. com

Brave Lynda’s sad finale BRITISH actress Lynda Bellingham, who announced recently that she had incurable cancer, has died at the age of 66.
Lynda, best known for her long-running role as the Mum in TV’s Oxo adverts, and as a presenter in TV’s Loose Women, had been battling colon cancer since being diagnosed in July 2013. She died peacefully in the arms of her husband, Michael Pattemore, on Sunday at a London hospital, said her agent, Sue Latimer. The actress had also announced that she planned to end her treatment to limit her family’s suffering after it spread to her lungs and liver. And she wanted to spend her last Christmas with the family free of chemotherapy treatment. She had two sons and was married three times.
Ms Latimer added: “Actor, writer and presenter - to the end, Lynda was a consummate professional.” Mr Pattemore told Yours magazine, for which his late wife was a columnist, that she had been unable to die at home as she had hoped. “She was in too much pain and they didn’t have it under control enough for me to be able to look after her,”
he said. “I just want her to be remembered as an actress more than anything and not as a celebrity or one of the Loose Women. “She started her career as an actress and never thought of herself as a celebrity - she’s always been an actress.” Her famous TV role, that advert apart, was as Helen Herriot in All Creatures Great and Small, alongside Chris-
topher Timothy. Earlier this month, she said her decision to give up chemotherapy was “a huge relief because I took back some control of myself”. The first 20 minutes of Monday’s Loose Women was dedicated to the show’s former co-host. “The mood is very different in the studio today,” said host Ruth Langsford. “It’s a very sad day for us here, but we want this to be a celebration of Lynda.” Bellingham’s friend, Christopher Biggins, gave an emotional tribute, telling the show: “Last night was a very difficult night, but I went to bed laughing, thinking of a joke she used to tell over and over again. “It’s a blessing in a way - we don’t want her to suffer any more.” Colleen Nolan, a panellist on the programme, was visibly moved. But singer Jane McDonald, who also used to work on Loose Women, said Lynda “would be mortified if we were all sad, weeping and wailing. We
have to keep the spirit of Lynda alive.” Lynda spoke about her illness on BBC Breakfast earlier this month A final interview with the actress, which was recorded a few weeks ago, was broadcast on Wednesday. During an emotional appearance on Loose Women recently, Lynda told viewers: “Grasp it all. Don’t be afraid .Enjoy the bits you can and tell your family you love them while you have the chance.” After her death was announced, Christopher Timothy described her on the BBC as “a real friend. She was a life force. She was funny, she was loyal, talented and a great mum.” He added: “On set, she was ‘one of the boys’ really - she was naughty and funny. We’ve all been expecting it, but it is so unjust that she didn’t make her last Christmas, as was her intention.” Michael Redfern, who played Bellingham’s TV husband in the Oxo commercials that be-
came a national institution, said: “Everyone liked her. I think she was just normal - that’s all it was. She was like the lady next door, the wife, your mother. She had everything, just a very open person.” Kaye Adams, another of Bellingham’s Loose Women co-presenters, said she would be remembered as “honest, generous, kind, courageous, intelligent, thoughtful”. Denise Welch, who was also on Loose Women, said: “She turned everything into a positive. She’s left a wonderful legacy - one of the best character actresses this country has known.” Lynda, born in Montreal, Canada, grew up near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire after being adopted. She studied at the Central School of Speech and Drama and, as well as “All Creatures”,she landed the title role in the Faith In The Future sitcom . She was awarded an OBE in 2013 for her charity work.

Xmas jobs by the thousand at Royal Mail and Amazon ROYAL Mail will hire 19,000 additional workers and online retailer Amazon are after 13,000 staff to cope with the Christmas postal rush. The Royal Mail, privatised last October, said the jobs will start in the middle of November and end in January, with December being the peak staffing period. These part-time posts will support the company’s 124,000 fulltime sorting and delivery personnel. Royal Mail chief operations officer Sue Whalley said: “Christmas is the busiest time of the year for Royal Mail, and we plan, all-year-round to help ensure we deliver the best possible service to our customers. Amazon also needs
thousands of temps at its warehouses, saying: “Every Christmas, we make a substantial financial commitment in additional resources to handle the festive mailbag.” The company wants seasonal roles to be filled at eight warehouses around the country, and at its customerservice centre in Edinburgh. The announcement came a week after Amazon said it needed 1,000 new permanent positions at its warehouses. John Tagawa, its UK operations director, said: “Last year, on the busiest day in the runup to Christmas, our customers ordered 4.1 million items - about 47 items ordered per
second.” The vast online company said that “hundreds” may end up with permanent positions as a result of the temporary work. Delivery services have seen a huge demand in recent years amid the rise on online purchasing by consumers. New services have also been set up to try to alleviate the problem of deliveries when recipients are not at home. Network Rail launched a 3,000-staff recruitment drive for Doddle, which allows commuters to pick up parcels at train stations. And Amazon has its own locker pick-up points at certain supermarkets and at some London Underground stations.

Miracle as paralysed man can walk again! A POLISH man, who was paralysed from the chest down in a vicious 2010 knife attack, is walking again after a pioneering therapy.
It involved transplanting cells from his nasal cavity into his spinal cord, and, remarkably, 40-yearold Darek Fidyka can now walk with aid of a frame. The treatment, a world first, was carried out by surgeons in Poland in collaboration with scientists in London. BBC One’s Panorama programme, which had unique access to the project, spent a year charting the patient’s rehabilitation. Darek, paralysed after being stabbed repeatedly in the back, said walking again was “an incredible feeling” and added: “When you can’t feel almost half your body, you are helpless. But when it starts coming back, it’s like you were born again.” Prof Geoff Raisman, chair of neural regeneration at University College London’s Institute of Neurology, led the UK research team. What had been achieved, he said, was “more impressive than man walking on the moon”. The treatment used olfactory ensheathing cells (OECs) - specialist cells which form part of the sense of smell.
The OECs act as pathway cells that enable nerve fibres in the olfactory system to be renewed continually. In the first of two operations, surgeons removed one of the patient’s olfactory bulbs and grew the cells in culture. Two weeks later, they transplanted the OECs into the spinal cord, which had been cut through in the knife attack, apart from a thin strip of scar tissue on the right. They had just a drop of material to work with - about 500,000 cells. Some 100 micro-injections of OECs were made above and below the injury. And four thin strips of nerve tissue were taken from the patient’s ankle and placed across an 8mm (0.3in) gap on the left side of the cord. The scientists believe the OECs provided a pathway to enable fibres above and below the injury to reconnect, using the nerve grafts to bridge the gap in the cord. Before the treatment, Mr Fidyka had been paralysed for nearly two years and had shown no sign of recovery, despite many months of intensive physiotherapy. But this exercise programme - five hours per day, five days a week - has continued after the transplant at the Akson Neuro-Rehabilitation Centre, in Wroclaw. Mr Fidyka first noticed that the treatment had been suc-
cessful after about three months, when his left thigh began putting on muscle. Six months after surgery, he was able to take his first tentative steps along parallel bars, using leg braces and a physiotherapist supporting him. Now, two years after the treatment, he can walk outside the rehabilitation centre using a frame. He has also recovered some bladder and bowel sensation - and sexual function. Polish research team leader Dr Pawel Tabakow, consultant neurosurgeon at Wroclaw University Hospital, said: “It’s amazing to see how regeneration of the spinal cord something thought impossible for many years - is becoming a reality.” Mr Fidyka, who still has five hours of physiotherapy daily, still tires quickly when walking. But he said: “I think it’s realistic that one day I will become independent. “What I have learned is that you must never give up but keep fighting, because some door will open in life.” The ground-breaking research was supported by the Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation (NSIF) and the charity UK Stem Cell Foundation (UKSCF) The latter, set up in 2007 to speed up progress of promising stem-cell research, has so far contributed £2.5m. The NSIF was set up by chef David Nicholls
after his son, Daniel, was paralysed from the arms down in a swimming accident in 2003. To date, the foundation charity has given £1m to fund the research in London, and a further £240,000 for the work in Poland. A key difference with Mr Fidyka was that the scientists were able use the patient’s olfactory bulb, which is the richest source of olfactory ensheathing cells. This meant there was no danger of rejection, so no need for immunosuppressive drugs used in conventional transplants. Most of the repair of Mr Fidyka’s spinal cord was done on the left side, where there was an 8mm gap. He has since regained muscle mass and movement, mostly on that side. Scientists believe this is evidence that the recovery is down to regeneration, because signals from the braincontrolling muscles in the left leg travel down the left side of the spinal cord. MRI scans suggest that the gap in the cord has closed up following the treatment. Prof Geoff Raisman said: “It would be my proudest boast if I could say that no patient had to pay one penny for any of the information we have found.” And none of those involved in the research are seeking profit from it. NSIF said if there were any patents aris-
ing, it would acquire them to make the technique freely available. The complex neural circuitry responsible for our sense of smell is the only part of the nervous system that regenerates throughout adult life. Scientists have tried to exploit this ability in stimulating repair in the spinal cord. Every time we breathe, molecules carrying different odours in the air come into contact with nerve cells in the nose. These transmit messages to our olfactory bulbs - at the very top of the nasal cavity, sitting at the base of the brain. The nerve cells are being continually damaged and must be replaced. This process of regeneration is made possible by the OECs, which provide a pathway for the fibres to grow back. NSIF’s Mr Nicholls said: “When Dan had his accident, I made him a promise that, one day, he would walk again. “I set up the charity to raise funds purely for research into repairing the spinal cord. The results with Darek show we are making significant progress towards that goal.” Prof Wagih El Masri said: “Although the clinical neurological recovery is, to date, modest, this intervention has resulted in findings of compelling scientific significance.” The consultant spinal injuries surgeon, who
has treated thousands of patients in the UK, added: “I have waited 40 years for something like this.” All those involved in the research are keen not to raise false hopes in patients. They stress that the success will need to be repeated to show, definitively, whether it can stimulate spinal-cord regeneration. The scientists hope to treat another 10 patients, in Poland and Britain, over the coming years, but it will depend on the research receiving funding. Dr Tabakow said: “Our team in Poland would be prepared to consider patients from anywhere in the world who are suitable for this therapy. They are likely to have had a knife wound injury, where the spinal cord has been cleanly severed.” Sir Richard Sykes, chair of the UK Stem Cell Foundation, said: “The first patient is an inspirational and important step, which brings years of laboratory research towards the clinical testbed. “To fully develop future treatments that benefit the three million paralysed globally will need continued investment for wide scale clinical trials,” Prof Raisman has spent more than 40 years studying how to repair the spinal cord. In animal studies, he showed that OECs injected into the rat spinal cord could reverse paralysis. In 2005, he was approached by a Polish neurosurgeon who had begun researching how to apply the technique in humans. Dr Tabakow carried out an initial trial involving three paralysed patients, who each had a small amount of OECs injected in their damaged spinal cords. While none showed any significant improvement, the main purpose of the study was achieved, showing that the treatment was safe.

In episode two, we visit Old Sarum in Wiltshire, formerly one of the most important cities in Britain. It is the site where Saxon kings produced their money, William the Conqueror flaunted his victory over King Harold and the Domesday Book was created. Now all that remains of this glorious ancient city is an abandoned ruin, which overlooks Salisbury, the bustling city which replaced it. The remnants of a medieval castle on top of a huge mound, surrounded by vast ditches and a cross-shaped ruin suggest that Sarum was once a place of great power and importance. To discover more about the mystery of Old Sarum, Ben uses his octocopter, a high tech flying camera, to give him a bird’s eye view. With a new perspective to the site he unpicks the centuries of history etched onto the hill. The octocopter flies around the giant ditch surrounding the entire hill and Ben reveals the importance of huge banks, which were built around 2500 years ago. Ben says: “They’re partly about saying, ‘Look how important we are. Look what we can achieve.’ But they’re also partly about defence and refuge, so when you’re being threatened by the neighbouring tribe, this is somewhere to come. In their prime, these defences would have been exposed chalk rubble and that’s incredibly difficult to clamber up. Even if you managed to get over that first bit of defence you’d be in the bottom of a massive ditch looking up at this great defensive wall and having all sorts of projectiles thrown at you. It’s a great big piece of prehistoric civil engineering.” Coins from a local museum show that Sarum was a Saxon stronghold where major Kings from the 11th century based their mint. But in 1066, William the Conqueror took over control of Sarum, after King Harold was killed at the Battle of Hastings. England now belonged to William and his Normans and it is possible that Sarum is the place where the greatest nobles in the land came to declare their allegiance.

Documentary following a team of maritime archaeologists as they uncover the remarkable city of Heracleion, lost to the sea and forgotten for over 2,000 years. In the fading days of the pharaohs, the port city of Heracleion was the gateway to Egypt. An opulent and prosperous place adorned with statues, it was a city of religious significance and home to the temple of Amun. In the 2nd century BC it was wiped off the face of the earth in a mysterious subsidence.

Walking Through History Channel 4, 20:00
The dramatic moors and valleys of West Yorkshire are the setting for an unusual slice of the past in Tony Robinson’s first walk from this new series. This evocative landscape was the home of, and inspiration for, the Brontes, the remarkable literary family that produced Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre. Over four days, Tony heads out from the Victorian wool capital of Bradford, and treks in a giant loop around what is now known as Bronte Country. From the birth of Charlotte, Emily, Anne and their brother Branwell in the Bradford suburb of Thornton, Tony traces their childhoods to the muchromanticised Bronte hub of Haworth. But the shocking reality of 1820s life in the mill town was far removed both from the tourist town of today, and from the fantasy world dreamed up by the Bronte children at their father’s parsonage home.

Keep It In The Family ITV1, 19.00
For the first show of the series, six stars from the hit TV soap Emmerdale will be joining Bradley in the studio as they prepare to face the dreaded drop. Each week three generations of rival families battle head-to-head, through a series of hilarious games, for incredible prizes including a family holiday or a brand new car. The Emmerdale stars (Mark Charnock, Charlotte Bellamy, Dominic Brunt, Chris Bisson, Samantha Giles and Natalie Anderson) will each hold the clue to a prize and it’s up to the family to decide if they would like to keep what’s hidden in their chosen box, or drop the star. Tonight, the Graziano family from Plymouth will be competing against the Davis family from Surrey. In this show, it’s the kids who are in charge. They decide which family member plays each game and they even choose which prizes the family compete for.

Spanish home prices continue to improve THE price of Spanish homes has now risen five months in a row, which is excellent news for sellers because it means the residential market is stabilising.
Latest figures from Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) reveal that sales went up by 10% in July on an annual basis, and by 9% on a quarterly basis. Mark Stucklin, of Spanish Property Insight, said: “After five consecutive months of annualised sales increases, it’s clear the Spanish property market is starting to recover in volume terms, as more buyers enter the market. “The figures confirm that overall sales are now stable, if not growing slightly. Markets are all about transactions and prices, which determine volume and value. And increasing transactions are a sign of confidence, which improves liquidity and reduce risk. “When buyers outnumber sellers, prices start to rise. After almost eight years of consecutive declines in home sales, that is welcome news for Spain.” But he warned: “It doesn’t mean the Spanish property crisis is over. But it is now crystal clear that the Span-
ish property market has established a floor in transaction terms, suggesting sales are unlikely to fall any further. If anything, they will continue growing, as they have been doing.” The INE doesn’t break down monthly sales figures by nationality, but Mr Stucklin and other real estate experts point out that foreign buyers are driving the sales increase. This suggests there is plenty of scope for further increases when local demand picks up, with falling unemployment and easier mortgage-lending. And the trend towards resales continues, with new sales down 8.3% in a year, and resales up 26.8%. “Expect the trend to continue, as the pipeline of new homes that people actually want to buy dries up over the next year or so,” added Mr Stucklin. “Housing starts have collapsed by 95% since the boom, and the Spanish homebuilding industry has all but disappeared. “It might not be a bad time to invest off-plan if you can find anything to buy off-plan, that is.” He also outlined that the label “new home” is starting to lose its meaning in Spain, as most of the new homes on the market were built years ago! They were constructed during a boom, when standards fell and prices rose, and these homes
have been collecting dust and depreciating for years. Looking at regional sales, some of the biggest increases took place in the provinces of the interior. For example, Cáceres saw sales increase by 87%, albeit from a low base. And sales in some coastal ar-
eas, like Málaga’s Costa del Sol, where foreigners tend to buy, were above the national average. “For the time being, and likely for some time to come, sellers outnumber buyers in the Spanish property market,” said Mr Stucklin. “So price pressures will remain mut-
ed at a national level. “It doesn’t help that the biggest vendors of all are Spanish banks, who are probably the worst property sales organisations on the planet and not much better at banking. “On the other hand, Spanish estate agents report that demand
pressures are already starting to build in prime segments of Barcelona, Madrid, and the best resort towns of the coast. “So investors and vendors will learn more by looking at segments rather than at national averages.’ The INE data also shows that average Spanish rental prices fell 0.7% over the 12 months to the end of August. The average in Spain has now fallen every month since April last year. A breakdown of the data shows that rents fell last month in 15 out of Spain’s 17 regions, but rose a fraction in Catalonia and Asturias. Compared with house prices, rents are now in negative territory, while house prices are rising for the first time since the first quarter of 2008, which means rental yields are shrinking. Falling rental yields diminish the appeal of property as an investment, but the yields have improved considerably since 2007 as rents have risen 10%, while house prices have fallen 33%. Mr Sucklin added: “Falling rental prices reflect the continued economic crisis and levels of supply and demand. There is an overall surplus supply of rental properties in Spain. But at the same time, agents are reporting a shortage of attractive rental properties in prime areas.”

Sidney is awoken in the early hours by a fire in the village. Putting his own life on the line, Sidney drags the dazed Marion Taylor (Flora Montgomery) free from the burning house, much to the relief of her husband Dominic (Lee Williams). But there’s a mystery around the fire – was it really an accident, or was it started deliberately? And why was Marion so reluctant to leave the house? Normally Sidney would turn to Geordie when there was a mystery like this to be solved, but Sidney finds that the detective is far from his normal self – distracted and detached. When Dominic Taylor is found stabbed, Sidney is surprised to find that it’s Geordie’s junior, Atkins (Joe Claflin), that will be heading up the case – and he’s not exactly a fan of interfering vicars. When Sidney attempts to take his concerns to Geordie, he makes an awful discovery – Geordie’s baby son is gravely ill. Rather than take some time off however, Geordie relishes the opportunity to take his mind off things with a good investigation – but Sidney worries that Geordie’s increasingly erratic behaviour means that his thoughts are actually far from the job in hand.

imagine…The Art That Hitler Hated BBC1, 22.35 Presented by Alan Yentob, the return of the BBC One’s flagship arts strand opens with a remarkable two-part special, The Art That Hitler Hated. These films, from award-winning director Jill Nicholls, explore the sensational discovery of a hoard of art, which had been hidden by a reclusive old man in his Munich flat. The find sheds new light on the fate of many paintings looted by the Nazis and puts the question of restitution back centre-stage. This is a story full of coincidences, cover-ups and denial, which has reignited passions that seemed long spent. With the strange tale of Cornelius Gurlitt’s treasure trove as a springboard, imagine… dives deep into an intriguing past and uncovers a lost world of Jewish collectors. This was art Hitler thought as sickly and ‘degenerate’ as the Jews themselves; he tried to rid Germany of both. Their pictures were seized, scattered or sold at knockdown prices before the owners fled into exile or were killed. imagine... follows the trail of the old man’s father, Hildebrand Gurlitt, art dealer to the Nazis. It opens a new window onto the history of the Third Reich and its campaign against modern art.

Wilderness Walks with Ray Mears ITV1, 19.30
“I have explored some of the wildest places on earth but my favourite is still Britain.” - Ray Mears This new ITV factual series follows bushcraft expert Ray Mears as he journeys through some of Britain’s most spectacular and diverse landscapes. In Wilderness Walks, Ray takes viewers on a trail of discovery along rivers, through forests and across mountains as he searches for some of our greatest natural treasures. Ray travels from dawn to dusk to explore each unique habitat and the incredible wildlife that exists there. In episode three, Ray visits Snowdonia and discovers how in the rugged landscapes around Britain’s highest mountain there are forms of wildlife which survive against all the odds, and can only be found in this very special part of Wales. He puts down mammal traps overnight to see how much wildlife is roaming on a tightly-cropped Snowdonia hillside - and is surprised to discover four wood mice in a small area.

The following reports will air in the seventh programme: A year on from Typhoon Haiyan - Mark Austin in the Philippines: Last November Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines and as one of the strongest storms ever recorded at landfall, it became the deadliest in the country’s history, killing more than 6000 people. Mark Austin was there in the immediate aftermath of its devastation and as the first anniversary of Haiyan approaches, Mark has returned. He revisits Tacloban, the city with the gravest death toll, where locals and officials tell him government aid is still not reaching those in most need. He then takes these claims in person to the central government in Manila. Mark also finds the woman he first met last year when she gave birth to her baby having lost five children in the Typhoon and returns with her as she visits their grave for the first time. Haiyan was a disaster which led to a record breaking response here in the UK. The British public helped raise 95 million pounds to help the survivors via the DEC appeal. Mark travels with one of the DEC charities, Care International, to see how they have helped transform some areas. 25th Anniversary of the fall of the wall - Julie Etchingham in Berlin: Germany also has an upcoming anniversary next month, a very historic one, as it is a quarter of a century since the fall of the Berlin wall. Its destruction after three decades of keeping East and West Berliners apart not only paved the way for German reunification but many say marked the start of the end of the Cold War. Julie Etchingham - who was a student in Germany a year before the fall - returns to the country and visits Berlin, a city now united and trying to overcome its past. Julie hears personal stories from both east and west including a love story that crossed the divide and speaks to an eyewitness from the night itself and the border guard who opened the gate. And she goes under the city to see an often unseen border beneath the wall. America’s mental health system - Robert Moore in Vermont: Behind the picture perfect Vermont landscape, lies an often unseen crisis: a collapsing mental health system. America is plagued with a lack of funding for people with mental health problems, and some patients are wreaking havoc for police and ERs. Robert Moore speaks to police and doctors on the frontline, some of whom say their system is “primitive”. And he meets the patients, many of whom are vulnerable but feel neglected by government-funded programmes, to see how the infrastructure is failing victims of this silent epidemic. There’s an acute shortage of psychiatric beds, and little funding for alternative treatments. Today 350,000 mentally ill people are in prison, when it’s believed that many may be better placed elsewhere.

The Great Interior Design Challenge Channel 4, 19:00
Architectural historian Tom Dyckhoff presents the series searching for untapped interior design talent, judged by interior designers Sophie Robinson and Daniel Hopwood. It’s the second of nine heats, as three new designers battle it out for a place in the second round. This time three designers take on three 1920s beach huts on Canford Cliffs beach and just three days and £750 to transform the two and a half square metres huts. In his nautical design, actor Michael must make sure he creates enough storage for the four families who share his hut. For school teacher Anne it’s a tricky task keeping her hut owner on board with her bold colour choice. Meanwhile, antiques restorer Sandy struggles to make a decision in her multi-coloured, nature inspired scheme. Tom Dyckhoff delves into the history of the nation’s love affair with the beach hut, while it’s down to judges Sophie and Daniel to decide who has the winning design and will go through to the next round.

Paul O’Grady: For The Love Of Dogs ITV1, 20.30 Paul O’Grady is back at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, meeting the latest residents that need treatment, training and ultimately new homes. In this new eleven part series, Paul visits Battersea homes at Brands Hatch in Kent and Old Windsor in Berkshire as well as the iconic Battersea London site, meeting the happy-go-lucky dogs, as well as those dogs that are lucky to be alive. As always, Paul helps to care for the canines, feeding them, walking them and accompanying them during treatment. He learns about how each dog ended up in the home, hearing stories that are heart-warming as well as heart breaking. This week, Paul meets a hyper chocolate Labrador, falls in love with a Staffie-Boxer cross puppy and is amazed by one of the biggest dog that Battersea have ever taken in. Ten-week-old puppy, Tulip, was dumped in a graveyard close to the Battersea Old Windsor site and for Paul, it’s love at first sight. Paul says: “Do you want to come home with me? What am I saying? I’ve got four. Oh she’s just the business, I’m in love, badly, seriously folks. I’ve gone! Hook, line and sinker. Oh this is big, big trouble. I’m going to leave you Tulip before we get too attached.” A gorgeous puppy like Tulip should have no problem being rehomed but 18-month-old Labrador Scooby might be a little trickier. He was brought into Battersea as he was too much for his owners to handle. But service dog manager Keith thinks Scooby has the potential to be a great search and rescue dog. Paul volunteers to help Scooby as he begins his training and hides in the grounds of the Old Windsor site, to see if Scooby can locate him. He does well and Keith is hopeful about his future but remains cautious until Scooby has completed his training and been officially tested. Keith says: “We do have some problems with chocolate Labs in that sometimes they don’t make it all the way through the course and they kind of lose interest.” The failure rate is high for dogs like Scooby but if he focuses on his training, there could be a nice home and a career waiting for him. At the Brands Hatch Battersea site, Paul meets the biggest challenge they’ve ever taken on. Khan is an Alaskan Malamute and finding him a home is going to be a huge challenge as lots of owners may not be able to cope with his gigantic size. To make matters worse, Khan is nearly two stone overweight. Rehoming & Welfare Assistant Beth Stevenson explains: “Malamute were originally bred to pull freight cargo across Alaska, so they are very powerful dogs. If they’re not given the right lifestyle they can become unfit and put weight on. Which is what’s happened to Khan.” Paul is then devastated to learn there might be something wrong with Tulip the puppy. Her front legs have started bowing and Battersea vet Paul Dobson wants to take a closer look. Paul says: “When she first came in, she was looking like a wonderfully normal, healthy puppy. No problems at all on examination. These front legs are starting to look a bit crooked, we‘re worried there’s some kind of growth deformity. So she is going to have a couple of x-rays. Then we review and see what they show us.” Once the x-ray results are in, Paul goes to meet head vet Shaun Opperman and braces himself for the worst. Shaun says: “In the puppy [the legbones] grow at the same stage until about a year of age. If one stops growing that’s when we can see problems. The leg starts to bow and there is surgery you can do to try to correct the two bones but it is quite challenging. We have taken some x-rays actually. So if one of her growth plates closes down then you’ve got yourself a problem. But we can see both these growth plates actually look fine, so we’re quite relieved about that. [Puppies] grow out of it.” Paul is hugely relived and begins to think about Tulip’s new home. After much deliberating, he decides to try fostering her, to see how she fits in with his other dogs. Paul says: “How about I foster you for a few weeks and see how you get on with my lot? Do you fancy that? Olga is going to ignore you. Louie is not interested. Bullseye will adore you and Eddy will hate you on sight and will be mad jealous but I think you can hold your own.” Sadly the fairytale ending Paul is hoping for, doesn’t quite work out. Eddy does not take well to a new dog on the block.

Simplifying
By Mariano Zunino Siri
WHEN you talk and discuss the law here in Spain, it’s important to understand what we are talking about!
The law is complex and the wording can sometime seem like gobbledygook, even for a lawyer. So let’s try to simplify a few terms. Technically, the system applied by Spanish Law is called “continental system”, which is supported,, principally, by the law in the broad sense (laws and regulations) and to a lesser extent by judicial decisions and customs. It is extremely complex as there are many autonomous communities with their own legislation, co-existing with the national law. Local bylaws in essence. This is not uncommon around the world. For example, in America it is legal to drink alcohol in most states at 21, but in some it’s 30. The supreme Law is the Constitution of 1978, which regulates the functioning of public bodies, the fundamental rights of the Spanish citizens and the organisation and competencies of the different autonomous communities. All laws in Spain must be declared compatible with the Constitution (all laws in breach of the Constitution are null). The Constitutional Court is the judicial
Spanish legal terms
body in charge of control of this matter - the only judicial body with the power to reject laws. The sources of law in Spain are: *Law *Usage *General principles of law *Jurisprudence (a secondary source, which is different from the Common Law system used in the Anglo Saxon legal system, based on judicial antecedents). And it’s not just the basics of the law which seem a little confusing. The legal terminology can also appear daunting, so, hopefully, the following will make everything a little clearer. Abogado (attorney; lawyer): A person designated to act for another in legal affairs. In real estate matters, a buyer
or seller of property may wish to hire a lawyer to review legal documents, and provide advice on accepting the legal obligations of the sales contract. Abogado (attorney; lawyer): A person designated to act for another in legal affairs. In real estate matters, a buyer or seller of property may wish to hire a lawyer to review legal documents, and provide advice on accepting the legal obligations of the sales contract. Adquirente (see Comprador). Comprador/Parte compradora (buyer, purchaser): In sales contracts, the party which pays the sales price and takes ownership of the property. Ejecución Hipotecaria (foreclosure): A legal
procedure whereby property pledged as security for a debt (mortgage) is sold to pay the defaulted debt. Foreclosure gives a lender the right to sell property that was pledged for a debt. All parties in a mortgage loan contract should be aware about its consequences. Gestoría: The company that handles paperwork for obtaining official authorisations, permits, licences, etc. Gestor is the person who normally presents at the authorities (Tax Office, Social Security) all the papers connected to the business. Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles (IBI, rates): Spanish yearly property tax paid to Town Hall. Impuesto sobre Actos Jurídicos Documentados: Stamp Duty.
Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales (Transfer Tax): to be paid by the purchaser after buying a property percentage on the assessed property value). Impuesto sobre el Incremento del Valor de Terrenos (Municipal Tax): Payable on the increased land value. This tax, also called Plusvalía, is paid to the Town Hall where the property is located. Inmobiliaria: Estate agent Libre de cargas (free of charges): Applicable to the property that has no mortgage, no attachment (embargo). Licencia de obra: Building licence. NIE (Foreigner Identity Number): Applied for at the police station, and later, the Tax Office can give you the NIF (Tax
Identity Number). Nota simple: Land registry informative record. Parcela: Plot of land (also solar). Poder notarial (power of attorney): There are many types of Poder depending of the authorisation the grantee has. Promotor: Property developer Registro de la propiedad (Land Registry): In which all the properties of the area are registered. Every finca (property) has a number for identification and is recorded, showing the name of the owner, charges of the property and any relevant information affecting the property. Representante fiscal: Tax representative Se alquila: For rent Se vende: For sale Señal: Deposit, down payment. Subvención: Subsidy. Grant. Superficie útil: Useable area of the property Tasación: valuation. Terreno: Also plot of land Titulo de propiedad (Title Deed): This public document states the ownership of property, date of sale, charges, features, number of finca, etc. Transmisión/Traspaso: Sale or transfer of ownership. Valor catastral (Value): Registered value of land at the Town Hall needed to liquidate the IBI. VPO (Vivienda de Protección Oficial): Lowcost housing subsidised by the state.

UK food production and jobs threatened PRODUCTION of popular British foods such as apples is being threatened drastically following tougher controls on measures to tackle weeds, disease and pests.
A new report, commissioned by the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), Agricultural Industries Confederation (AIC) and Crop Protection Association (CPA), studied the economic impact of plant protection products (PPPs) on UK agriculture and the wider economy - among them insecticides, fun-
gicides and herbicides. Researchers found that apples, carrots and frozen peas are all under threat through the loss or restricted use of ingredients in PPPs to safeguard healthy growth because of changes to EU and national regulations. The implications for the control of weeds, disease and pests in key British crops would also have an impact on the gross added value (GAV) of agriculture, including horticulture, which would fall by £1.6bn said the study. The UK would become more reliant on imports, with production of some products being “severely curtailed”. Farm business consultants Andersons, which compiled the report, said its assessment of job losses in agricultural wholesale, the supply chain and the wider food and drink industry, revealed that
as many as 44,000 jobs could be lost if these active ingredients were no longer available. The report also found that the UK’s farming profit would fall by 36%, leading to major structural changes in the agriculture industry. Guy Smith, NFU vicepresident, said: “We have been warning that in the lifetime of the current European Parliament, we would face significant threats to PPPs. “This important and timely report has confirmed and added clarity to the negative impacts that losses and restrictions on PPPs would have on UK food production, on farms and throughout the supply chain. “It is absolutely essential that farmers have regulation that is risk-based, and that it follows sound science to ensure the farming sector keeps growing and contributing to
the £97bn UK food and drink industry. “For this to happen, we need government at both UK and EU level to put British food production at the heart of policy-making across all government departments.” Nick von Westenholz, CPA chief executive officer, said: “The report provides a clear picture of the implications of the flawed system that governs pesticide use in the EU.” He added: “Hopefully, European policy-makers will now realise how imperative it is to make a proper assessment of risk and impact when they take decisions affecting food production - and to make sure they foster rather than stifle innovation. “If not, farmers can no longer expect to benefit from increasingly targeted and effective crop-protection products as industry diverts investment away from Europe.”
David Hutchinson, AIC strategy group member, said: “This report highlights the serious effects of policy and regulatory decisions not based on sound science. “Any crop-protection product should be assessed in the wider context of a food production strategy, so that agronomists have at their disposal both cultural controls and a range of chemistry to help farmers and growers sustain UK food production. “A big concern is that current EU policy-making and regulatory systems are heavily influenced by political considerations. And sound science often comes second in assessing agricultural technologies, old and new. “In the meantime, farming and the wider economy of our food industry will continue to suffer and be placed at an ever-increasing competitive disadvantage to those countries outside the EU.”

Meson Era Las Mozas restaurant
The T-bone steak was bigger than the plate! IF you want to sample typical Canarian cuisine, or even a huge rack of ribs, you must visit the exquisite Meson Era Las Mozas restaurant in Valle San Lorenzo.
The restaurant is known affectionately as The Courtyard by the British community. although some stick to The Ribs. But whatever the label, the food is spectacular. The spacious premises do, indeed, feature a courtyard with a tree in the middle, as well as a beautiful restaurant inside. This is a veritable oasis tucked away down a tiny side street of Valle San Lorenzo behind the catholic church.
If you’re coming from the Los Cristianos direction, turn right just past Dorta, the kitchen company, and follow your nose until you come across it, on the right, complete with car park. Las Mozas has been there for 13 years, so if you’ve lived here for a while, you will surely have been there at least once. If not, you don’t realise what you’re
missing! Some friends, happy to sit at home most nights, venture out for a meal two or three times a year. And guess where they go? Always! And always ribs! And no wonder! It was a lovely evening so we chose to sit outside in the covered courtyard area (where they allow smoking), complete with real hanging plants and a whole host of long
trestle-like tables, ideal for large groups. On colder evenings, less-hardy folk slip inside to the cosy restaurant. With a bottle of Dorada and glass of Canarian red wine in hand, we perused the multilingual menu, which is definitely a meat-lover’s delight. To be fair, if you’re vegetarian, it’s not the place for you, although they will cater for you if necessary Hot bread, “Mojo” sauce, both green and spicy red, together with the not-to-be-missed home-made Ali Oli (garlic mayonnaise) were brought to the table. To begin, we shared a reasonablypriced dish of garlic prawns, which were fresh and simply delectable, accompanied by a huge mixed salad. Las Mozas
is famed for its ribs, but we felt like breaking with tradition. So for the main event I chose beefsteak; two large pieces of thin steak graced my plate. In fact, so big were they that there was no room to add the salad, or the m e l t - i n - y o u r- m o u t h Canarian Potatoes. The meat was succulent and tasty, which tells you exactly why people return time after time. My work colleague chose the T-bone steak, which was bigger than the plate itself. But he made good progress tucking into it until the sheer size defeated him. In fact, we simply had no room left for dessert but enjoyed two cups of their tasty coffee instead. All in all we had a superb evening. It is spotlessly clean, you
get attentive, excellent service and the main reason you go there is for the food, which was spot-on. To reserve a table, call 922 765 597, the restaurant now opens for lunch and goes straight through to the evening for dinner. It’s not that long since they closed for a siesta and reopened in the evening, which suggests that business, as it should be there, is booming! Las Mozas is open six days a week and is closed on Mondays. There is ample carparking and they are now taking bookings for Christmas parties, for which they have a set menu. SAD sufferers’ light relief
By Val Sainsbury SCIENTISTS believe they have identified the underlying reason why some people are prone to the winter blues, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
People with SAD have an unhelpful way of controlling the “happy” brain-signalling compound serotonin during winter months. Brain scans reveal that as the nights draw in, production of a transporter protein ramps up in SAD, lowering available serotonin. The work was presented this week at a neuropsychopharmacology conference. The University of Copenhagen researchers, who carried out the trial, say their findings confirm what others have suspected,
although they studied just 11 people with SAD and 23 healthy volunteers for comparison. Using positron emission tomography (PET) brain scans, they were able to show significant summer-to-winter differences in the levels of the serotonin transporter (SERT) protein in SAD patients. The SAD volunteers
had higher levels of SERT in the winter months, corresponding to a greater removal of serotonin in winter, while the healthy volunteers did not. Lead researcher Dr Brenda McMahon, said: “We believe we have found the dial the brain turns when it has to adjust serotonin to the changing seasons. “The serotonin trans-
porter (SERT) carries serotonin back into the nerve cells where it is not active, so the higher the SERT activity, the lower the activity of serotonin. “Sunlight keeps this setting naturally low, but when the nights grow longer during the autumn, the SERT levels increase, resulting in diminishing active serotonin levels.
“Many individuals are not really affected by SAD, and we have found that these people don’t have this increase in SERT activity, so their active serotonin levels remain high throughout the winter.” Prof Siegfried Kasper, of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, said: “SERT fluctuations associated with SAD have been
seen in previous studies, but this is the first study to follow patients through summer and winter comparisons. “It seems to offer confirmation that SERT is associated with SAD.” Sam Challis, information manager at mental health charity Mind, said: “We don’t yet know enough about how serotonin levels can be affected by light levels, so this is quite an interesting, albeit small, study. We would welcome more research.” She said there was a range of treatments available for SAD, such as light therapy and cognitive behavioural therapy. “We know that eating a balanced diet, cutting down on caffeine and getting some exercise can help, as can spending as much time as possible outdoors because - even when it’s overcast - light will be higher than indoors,” she added. SAD affects about two million people in the UK, and more than 12 million across northern Europe.
Lung-cancer victims are given fresh hope LUNG cancer can remain dormant for 20 years before it is triggered into an aggressive form of the disease. But new research by scientists has renewed hope that a new discovery will lead to earlier detection.
At the moment, twothirds of patients are diagnosed with advanced forms of lung cancer, when treatments are less likely to be successful. Over 40,000 people are diagnosed with the disease each year, but fewer than a 10th survive for up to five years after the diagnosis. Professor Charles
Swanton, at Cancer Research UK’s London Research Institute and the UCL Cancer Institute, said: “Survival remains devastatingly low with many new, targeted treatments making a limited impact on the disease. “By understanding
how it develops, we have opened up the disease’s evolutionary rule book in the hope that we can start to predict its next steps.” The study, published in the Science journal, examined lung cancers from seven patients including smokers, ex-
smokers and complete abstainers. The findings also highlighted the role of smoking in the development of lung cancer. Many of the early genetic faults are caused by smoking. But as the disease evolved, these became less important, with the majority of faults now caused by a new process generating mutations within the tumour, controlled by a protein called APOBEC. The wide variety of faults found within lung cancers explains why targeted treatments have had limited success so far. Attacking a particular genetic mistake identified by a biopsy in lung cancer will be effective only against those parts of the tumour with that fault, leaving other ar-
eas to thrive and take over. Professor Nic Jones, Cancer Research UK’s chief scientist, said: “This fascinating research highlights the need to find better ways to detect lung cancer earlier when it’s still following just one evolutionary path. “If we can nip the disease in the bud and treat it before it has started travelling down different evolutionary routes, we could make a real difference in helping more people survive the disease. “Building on this work, Cancer Research UK is funding a study called TRACERx, which is studying hundreds of patients’ lung cancers as they evolve over time to find out exactly how lung cancers mutate, adapt and become re-
sistant to treatments.” Dr Noel Snell, Director of Research at the British Lung Foundation, said: “Late presentation and diagnosis are key reasons for the poor survival rates from this disease, which are worse in the UK than in Europe and the US. “Finding the cancers earlier means that they are more liked to be curable, and this exciting new research suggests that if they could be diagnosed at a very early stage in their evolution, we might be able to tackle the disease earlier and improve survival rates dramatically.” He added: “Greater investment in this sort of research is absolutely vital if we are to make significant advances in the management of this terrible condition.”

IT’S BLACK, IT’S WHITE!
All dressed up for Halloween, but no witches By Ruth Benson
By Carl from Robot
WITH Halloween just a week away, I am sure people will be starting to think of what to wear, especially if they have kids.
THIS isn’t my view but about choice … to cover white hair or to leave it natural? So many women go through this decision when the first few white hairs start to wave at them from their scalp. It takes just a few to inflict any man or woman with horror. It’s a sign that you are ageing, and few of you are inclined to sit back and give in or are you? We are accustomed to seeing women without their white hair showing, yet men do get away with it more. But when those hairs start to bother you, what do you do? Should you give in and cover up those offending little wisps? Or should you grow old gracefully and accept the fact that they are there? We are often faced with this dilemma here in the salon. I give my opinion, but it’s up to the client how she or he feels about their gradual or not-so-gradual change of hair shade. If you decide to colour, you have the upkeep to consider. Should you decide to stay with the white strands, will it stress you out looking at them? To me, it’s the same as bowing to fashion and wearing age-appropriate clothes, or rebelling
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote an article regarding children and dressing up - and how children’s themed outfits such as Disney Princess have become just as popular for adults as kids. If you are still stuck for ideas, Yahoo has listed the five most-searchedfor Halloween outfits. The children’s theme is there, with the No,1 costume being Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It’s probably down to the imminent release of the film that the site saw a 5,000% increase on searches for the masked Ninjas. Jack Sparrow/Pirates came second, followed by Star Wars, Poison Ivy and general superheroes came in at fifth. I always thought Halloween was meant to be about witches, ghosts and so forth. Amazon also did a survey, with women favouring Maleficent, Catwoman and Wonder Woman and again, I can see a pattern forming. Now the searches for men’s costumes on Amazon are a bit surprising, with Lederho-
sen/Bavarian costumes being popular as, well, a banana! Don’t ask! Google has been dominated by Frozen, followed again by Maleficent and Ninja Turtles. It seems from these results that the outfit choices are heavily influenced by recent films. Last year, one of my favourite costumes, which is also popular this year, is that of a Minion from the Kids film Despicable Me. This year has also seen an increase in pet costumes, which may be down to the viral video of spider dog. If you
have not yet seen it, have a look online - it’s very funny. Dogs seem to lead the way in costumes, and Google reported a 15% increase in searches for costumes this year. For the brave among you, there has also been a costume relating to this year’s headlines. But be warned that it should probably be avoided. Personal Protective clothing worn by the Centre for Disease Control and Preventions has been issued to healthcare workers during the Ebola crisis. It is sold online at Amazon as Ebola Protective kit. The New York Post has already called it this year’s “hot” Halloween costume, while others have criticised the outfit, the disease having killed over 4,500 people in Africa. An outfit worn previously and still seen as bad taste is the one resembling Osama Bin Laden. And we all remember when Prince Harry wore his Nazi outfit! If you do go out this Halloween and choose to dress up, it seems that film choices are a good idea. But to be honest, I can’t see what’s wrong with a sheet featuring two holes. It worked for me!

and going down fighting? It’s all a b o u t how you see yourself. Do you want to be honest with everyone and show off your white bits, or do end up kicking and fighting until, in the end, covering them up? I cannot decide for you, but if you do feel the need to blend away the years by applying colour, choosing the right shade isn’t a good exercise to try at home. Colouring white hair is best left to your stylist. Simply shoving on what was your old colour won’t go with your skin tone, your eye colour or wardrobe. All these factors come into play when deciding to cover up what you’re not too happy seeing in the mirror. Or do you let nature take its course? Then, you brave your natural look, hold your head up high and say: “This is me!” Every woman is different. Some want rid of the first white hair at sight, while others ignore it and carry on as though it isn’t there.
Yet like it or not, we live in a world that judges you, not on your personality or wealth but on how you look. People form opinions about you in an instant, casting an eye on what you are wearing, right down to your shoes and even your accessories. I’m not telling anyone to colour or not colour - that’s something I decide when I give salon consultations. I need to know you and know about you and your “look” before offering an opinion. It’s not about throwing on a brown colour to get rid of the offending strands. We have to talk upkeep, and what you would want to see from a colour. That’s if it’s best for your hair. Maybe it’s a beautiful shade of platinum and is not needed. It all depends on how you feel about it. So now, all you ladies stuck in the middle of deciding what to do about those twinkling strands, don’t jump in feet-first. Consider the effect colouring your hair will have on everything, from skin tone to clothing. To colour or not to colour? You decide!

Ringing all the phone changes!
IT was a sad reflection of the times to see pictures of a rundown but still working phone box in my home town of Sheffield.
At one time our local public telephones, in their bright-red boxes, were an important part of our lives. And at first they were beautifully maintained, with the phones disinfected regularly, But as the years went by, they became dirty and smelly - often used as substitutes for public toilets - as well as cold and draughty with broken windows, when vandalism became the sport of some bored teenagers. The first phone boxes in the UK, erected in 1920, were constructed of concrete. Few of those remain today, and the red telephone box with which we are familiar came into use in 1924. This K2 kiosk was designed by architect Sir Giles Gilbert-Scott, who also designed Liverpool Cathedral and Battersea Power Station. His original wooden prototype for the first red telephone box can be seen in Piccadilly, London. By 2013, just 10,000 of the original 60,000 remained in Great Britain, They are a popular item for collectors and, in some parts of the country, former and unused boxes have been adopted by the local authorities and converted into other uses. Over 150 conversions are used as libraries or book exchanges, and there’s even a small art gallery in one.
Many people, especially in rural communities, take great pride in looking after their phone boxes, cleaning them and planting flowers round them. When I was a child, almost no one had a telephone and you were dependent on the facility which seemed to be at the end of every road. Given that there were always so many people who wanted to use them, it wasn’t uncommon for queues to form outside, and for your conversation to be terminated abruptly by someone banging on the door and shouting: “How much longer are you going to be in there?” There would also be people who viewed them as their own private phone, who could be seen outside awaiting a call. “Sorry, I’ve a call
coming through,” they would say to you as you approached the box. And, being the polite Brits we are, we would stand there like lemons waiting with them! The UK’s first trunk dialling system from a public phone box came in 1959. The new, streamlined coin telephone boxes had slots for 3d, 6d and oneshilling pieces, and you put the money in when your call was answered. This was an attempt by Post Master General Ernest Marples to modernise the phone system and encourage its use. This eventually replaced Button A, where you put the coppers in, and Button B, which you pressed when you’d been connected and the use of the operator, who was contacted by dialling ‘O’. The operators were often the butt of
schoolboy humour by youngsters, who would ask if it were the operator on the line and then shout: “Better watch out, there’s a train coming,” before running away! Phone boxes were also used for sheltering from the rain - and often a bit of courting! Telephone directories were available and, surprisingly enough, were not usually vandalised. In towns like London, phone boxes were used by ladies of a certain occupation to advertise their services by means of cards placed around the interior. On some school trips to the Capital, many of the boys were more interested in seeing how many cards they could collect than the sight of Big Ben! When phones started to appear in homes here in the Sixties, it was often thought of as a sign of affluence.
This could be a doubtful pleasure because, once it became known that there was a phone in someone’s house, it became common for the whole street to use it as a public amenity if there were an emergency! Party lines, where a phone line was shared between two households, could be annoying because someone else could be on the line. And you were never quite sure if someone was listening in to your private conversation.
It was around the early Sixties that touch-dialling phones came into use instead of the type where you used your finger to dial numbers. Although the new phones, especially the “trim phones”, were undeniably compact and attractive, many people still think nostalgically about the old-style telephones, which were actually comfortable to hold, with clear sound reproduction. STD became commonplace after being used for the first time in the UK by the Queen in the late Fifties. when she dialled Edinburgh the furthest place that could be contacted by phone from London at that time. How technology has progressed. In the Sixties we would have thought of mobile phones as something from a science-fiction film, and it wasn’t until the Eighties that they came into general use. However, they were practically as big as house bricks and would be carried around by businessmen in a shoulder bag, complete with a battery for re-charging. And given that most people today would be demented if they left the house without their mobile, what on earth did we do without them when we were young?

They bear the scars of fighting, had missing teeth and were heartworm positive. But thanks to people’s generosity, we were able to have them treated for the terrible condition, and they are now doing well in Country Pet Hotel. But they still need a loving home, and we know it is a big ask because they have to stay together. The nippiest old banger around doing 205mph!
By Jav EVEN if you were desperate for a set of wheels and were offered this old banger for a few quid, you’d hardly be queueing up for it.
He adds with a grin: “Once, I was at traffic lights and a young guy in a pimped-up Mitsubishi Evo pulled up and revved his engine a bit. I just laughed. This car is like turning up to a knife fight with an AK-47 because there’s nothing to prove. “For the price of a BMW M3, it will outstrip anything on the road. And it won’t lose anything in depreciation to become outdated. Yet this 47-year-old Volvo Amazon estate is probably the most unique car in Britain because, as its owner says: “It’s the fastest road car in the land.” Car fanatic Guy Martin, Channel 4’s Speed with Guy host and a racing driver to boot, has tweaked the engine so much that it has registered a top speed of 205mph. He also reckons it does 0-60mph in under three seconds which is seriously quick. “Although it looks like a standard Volvo, I reckon it is about the fastest

New driving-licence law is coming soon
CHANGES in the laws regarding driving licences will be implemented on 20th January 2015.
At present, if you are stopped by the Policia Local or Guardia Civil and fined for not having a Spanish licence, you may appeal this fine and
Tráfico have assured us this will be quashed. However, once the new laws have been imposed, the whole situation changes and many will find themselves in a difficult situation. You are not legally allowed to renew your UK licence because you are not resident there. This is stated quite clearly on the DVLA renewal form, although lots of drivers choose to ignore it. change their licence. But they could be obliged to have a periodical medical here to be valid for driving in Spain if the licence doesn’t have an expiry date. This information would then be recorded and registered on Tráfico’s system to validate said licence. An English paper licence is not a European licence and, technically, is not valid outside the UK and should have been exchanged for a card licence. But from the 20th January, if you have a UK licence, have renewed it while resident here in Tenerife - holding a Green Residencia Certificate - and want to exchange it for a Spanish licence, this will not be permitted unless you can prove you were not resident here at the time of renewal, which is virtually impossible.
Also, if you have renewed your HGV or PSV part of your licence in the UK while resident here, you could not exchange those categories and would have to take a written and practical test to have it added to a Spanish licence. Many people have not changed their UK licences as they are under the impression that a Spanish Licence is valid in Spain only. But this not the case. A Spanish licence, just as a UK Card licence, is a European licence and is valid for driving throughout Europe. As you can see, this will cause complications for some, and if you are in any doubt, contact me at emma@motorworldtenerife.com with your exact circumstances and I will advise you on an individual basis. Or we can ask at Tráfico for your circumstances to be clarified.

Osasuna 3 CD Tenerife 2 MAYBE the players are reading this column? Last week I wrote: “This is the weekend for the players to play for the shirt. To summon the strength. To give it their all. And dare I say it? To play without ... Fear!”
And boy, did they do all of the above! How Tenerife returned from the mainland without something for their efforts is beyond me. They were magnificent, applying the same spirit that saw them defeat Las Palmas a few weeks ago. I’m not saying Osasuna didn’t deserve to win because they also played well - it was one of those games. But Tenerife really had a go. They chased down every lost cause and never stopped. The 93rd-minute winner was so cruel. Yes, our young keeper Roberto could have done

CDT heroes Osa unlucky better as Kodro’s shot squirmed under his body. But these things happen. The hosts will say it was a piece of pay-back luck regained after Tenerife were awarded a soft penalty, and they are probably right. Tenerife deservedly took the lead through a rare Aitor Sanz goal. They bossed the first half and only Iranian veteran Nekounam’s penalty denied them leading at the break. Last week, ‘Ruso’ Garcia openly asked why Suso and Cristo Martin didn’t play away from home. Well, his point was hammered home as they both featured. It was a more familiar looking line-up and Tenerife flew out of the blocks, making Osasuna look average. Even a reshuffle of the back four following an injury to Albizua after just half-an-hour didn’t stop the flow. In the second half, they took the game to Oasasuna, and even with Tenerife legend Nino looking dangerous for the hosts, we always

seemed most likely to score. It came from a soft penalty, but we will take it. Vitolo, who had a decent match, stroked the penalty home and a first away win of the season was on the cards. However, Osasuna and their United Nations team threw everything at the away defence. First Nino and then Garcia missed good chances before the equaliser finally Draw

came. The sporting Gods decreed it would be Nino, whose smart finish from 12 yards was so familiar to the Tenerife fans, who worshipped him a few years ago. While Nino smiled and took the congratulations from the players, he didn’t celebrate the goal. It was a classy touch. Deep into injury-time, both sides went for the win and spurned their chances. Before the last-gasp Kodro effort, which really should have been stopped. It was heart-breaking, but a real stride in the right direction. The pressure is still on manager Alvaro Cervera, but at least this showed the players are behind him. This week, the Spanish media have suggested he will be sacked if Tenerife don’t beat Barcelona’s B team of kids. But, as I wrote last week, that would be wrong. Tenerife are actually in a similar situation to the one Eibar were in after eight matches last season. They didn’t panic, and ended up winning the division! That said, the Tenerife board do have some options. The surprise sacking of Jose Luis Mendilibar at Levante leaves him on the market. And he’s a fine coach. Then there is the curi-
ous case of Albert Ferrer. The ex CDT player took over Cordoba in January and led them to a famous play-off promotion in June. With the second-smallest budget, it’s no surprise they are bottom of La Liga, but even Jose Mourinho couldn’t have done a better job than Ferrer. It’s a cruel dismissal and it’s understood the former Chelsea and Barca defender wants to get back on the horse. So with two big names available, you can see why there would be a temptation to get them before someone else does. This week, Santi Castillejo was fired by tiny Llagostera to start the unofficial sacking season. It’s always nice to watch Barcelona B and Real Madrid Castilla. Over the years they have produced some fine young players and it’s great to see them at the very start. A couple of years ago, Barca B smashed Tenerife in a Santa Cruz downpour. A number of those Barca kids would go on to lift the Champions League - and a couple are now full internationals. It’s a match to take the kids to see. This season’s crop are at the end of a two-year cycle. Denis Suarez finished last
season so well that he is now on loan at Sevilla to add some seasoning. I was very taken with then 18-year-old Cameroon centre-back Frank Bagnick in last season’s fixture, and he is developing nicely. Fellow defenders Diagne and Alex Grimaldo are also catching the eye, and then there are the flair kids. All real fans will have heard of the potential of Alen Halilovic. The 18-year-old is already a full Croatian international, and don’t be surprised if he gets a loan to the Premier League in January. Everton nearly got him in August. Sergi Samper, David Babunski and fast-improving Juan Camara are scouted to within an inch of their lives. But the cherry is Jean Dongou. Like Lukaku at Everton, he is a manchild. His reputation saw him well-marked last season, but a year’s growth and a bit of beef have made all the difference this campaign. He has six goals already and has been involved in a few senior squads. He is not the tallest, but he has a touch, pace and a swagger. Believe me, Dongou is going to be a real player!

Shamrocks rock the artists! THE artist Pablo Picasso had what became known famously as his “blue” period. After extensive research, we discovered he also had a green period!
It was uncovered at Emerald Shamrocks, who took all eight points from Picasso’s. Not so much oil painting but a whitewash! Anyhow, that opened the gap at the top of Division 1 to 16 points, with second placed Gaffers A managing to
just about beat Chipeque, 5-3. The Playboys had to wait until the last rubber to beat a plucky Naughty Nautas side, while Sheena checked out on 80 for Pas O Nadas as they hammered a struggling Sundowners outfit. Trap Door, who seem to move up a place every week, are now fourth after thrashing Emerald Lounge 7-1. And, with games in hand, they could have a big say in things later on. Just three matches in Division 2 this week, and one of those made a significant difference at the summit. Waterfall Warriors

made light work of The Rebels and claimed everything but the trebles leg to open up a 14-point gap at the top. Chipeque Chippers moved into second place after beating Phoenix Flights 6-2. It was the battle of the tree-huggers at Palms Sports Bar as they en-
tertained Palms Pool Bar. And true to form, they battled out an environmentally-friendly 4-4 draw! Congratulations to Bar 180 A, who actually played this week! They were a bit rusty at Vikings Ensecan, but it was certainly a good performance

by the hosts. With Danny firing in a maximum, they pushed the Premier League leaders all the way. Of course, Tom weighed in with another 180 of his own - his ninth - and Bar 180 nicked a 5-3 win. Sam rifled in a maximum for the Boothen boys during a close encounter at Target Titans, but the Titans held on in the final leg to claim a hard-fought victory. Two more 180s came in an interesting match at Phoenix Bar. Having recently beaten Phoenix 6-2, visiting Target Army would have been confident of
getting another positive result. But, with London rolling back the years, and some great darts from new recruits Ricky and Johnny, the home side won all five singles games. This prompted Target captain Grant to mumble something about kicking butt on the way home! Whether he did remains a mystery, but it seemed to do the trick as they rallied to take both doubles and the trebles for a rather more respectable 5-3 scoreline. The match included maximums for Target’s Bryn, and London, of Phoenix.

Injured Costa cost a fortune!
IT was good to have to put the old sheepskin coat back on as we returned to action in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League. Fortunately, most players reported back from the international break in one piece, the exception being Chelsea’s Diego Costa. He has been many managers’ captain and top point-scorer but, judging by some of this
week’s totals, one or two managers forgot to take him out of their teams. Mind you, the last time he was meant to be injured he played and notched a hat-trick. It’s tough being a manager. Surprisingly, the pointscoring team of the week wasn’t the whole of the eight-goal Southampton side. They had two players feature, but Everton led the way with three players - all three defenders. Manchester City contributed two, and the others came from Chel-
sea, Arsenal, Newcastle and West Ham. There was no change at the top of the league, Mike Edens’ Mikehammered team retaining top spot - and he has now opened an 18-point lead. Team of the Week were Sparky’s Sparkster’s, managed by Mark Kennedy, who were in elec-
tric form. They scored 88 points, with Sergio Aguero his captain and top point-scorer and Phil Jagielka chipping in with a nice tally. Hat-tip to young Mikey, who helped himself to 86 points, which enabled him climb an excellent 25 places! In the battle at Oasis Fm Towers, Chris Elk-
ington just kept his nose in front, by three points, after a great week for Adi Benson saw him scoring 75 points and shooting up the league. John Zammit comes
next and, as much as it pains me to write this (tongue firmly in cheek), Roscoe is bringing up the rear, with a fair bit of ground to make up.

Top guns move into position IT’S deja vu at the top of the Direct Telecom Pool League’s Division One I bet you knew I was going to write that!
There was a feeling that a few teams would challenge the “big two” but it doesn’t look like happening. Phoenix Potters were one of the contenders, but they seem to have run out of steam recently and, maybe, the Werther’s Originals are no longer working. They travelled to Inn the Pink A confident of picking up a win, but it wasn’t to be. Potters started off okay, trading early frames, but then lost four on the bounce, from which they never recovered. But credit to John and his Inn the Pink team, who just keep going from strength to strength. This slip allowed Phoenix to jump above the Potters in the table and I am sure this won’t be mentioned over the weekend! Harry and his boys welcomed Atmosphere 13 to Los Abrigos, but once the pleasantries were out of the way, they showed no mercy at the table and were comfortable winners. Defending champions Tenerife Hammers A remain top after beating Terrace Bar B but they were made to work hard for their victory and admitted that a draw would have been a fair result. Jambo and Paul were in white-hot form, which made all the difference, but Terrace B are going the right way. Gaffers A stayed within two points of Hammers after a comfortable win over
Treehouse A, despite a bout of flu from guv’nor Neil - and the bar undergoing a refit. Palms B moved up the table nicely with another tight win, this time over the Peacocks. Graham enjoyed a hat-trick of wins, while Richie again failed to win a frame. Coupled with his beloved Middlesbrough getting chinned by Wolves, he had a night to forget. Exiles A, who have started to get their act together, have moved into fifth spot after taking three points from Waterfall Rebels. The Rebels were expected to be much further up the table by now, but they missed some easy pots against Exiles who have become a decent yardstick in the top flight. Exiles B were also winners, against Dreamers A, in another of those close games. But apart from Gav who won all his games, the rest of Dreamers were offform. They also seem to be making a habit of dropping points on the last game. There were hopes of a draw, but Stash beat Mark and give Exiles B victory. Tenerife Hammers C took on fellow-strugglers Terrace Bar A. The teams were evenly matched and through the first eight games, there was nothing to separate them. But Hammers C got their noses in front, and though Terrace’s Mal had a chance to earn a draw after losing his first two frames, he fluffed his lines. Ken, who had been in great form all night, stepped up to take the win and the points. The Spoon Squad from the Terrace need to start winning

matches - and soon! The Division Two title could be decided by Christmas. Sporting Jester A, who are head and shoulders above everybody else, made it nine wins from nine with a whitewash over Dreamers B. There was no shame in the defeat because I’m sure there will be other teams suffering the same fate this season. So who will give the Jesters a run for their money? Bluebell A are nicely positioned in
second spot, and the match between the two will be interesting. In the meantime, Bluebell A picked up another three points against James Place who, surprisingly, are struggling a little at the moment. It is worth noting that Jester A have not played any of the other top sides, while James Place have faced just one of the bottom seven. Inn the Pink B went close to promotion last season and are in the

mix again with almost a different team. They took on Inkspots, who have also had a decent start to the season. But Inn the Pink are experienced, though, and it showed as they proved too strong for the league new boys. Tenerife Pool Tables travelled to Next Door, still buoyant from picking up their first win of the season last week. Unfortunately, their euphoria didn’t last long and they were bought back down to earth with a bump.
Good good job young Harley won a frame to avert a whitewash! Gaffers B, comfortably positioned in midtable, had a routine win over Toscales Beer Chuckers, even though both teams played away from home. So a big thanks to Picasso’s for hosting the game at short notice. In the final match, Hoppy’s Bar picked up another win against Treehouse B and look set for a climb up the table in the next few weeks.

Barclays Premier League review
By Adi Benson ANOTHER weekend of worldclass football, and more twists and turns when it comes down to results … our major league continues to surprise!
Chelsea are still sitting atop the Premier League, with the rest just trying to hang on to their coattails. Last week, I saw off my Beat Benson challenger comfortably, and this week I will chin fellow-columnist Geoff Huxtable, who is still smiling after his beloved Arsenal’s smash-and-grab in Anderlecht. As for Liverpool’s humbling by Real Madrid - don’t ask! West Ham v Man City Hammers’ fans must be in dreamland at the moment. From the struggles of last season to the dizzy heights of fourth, the team are playing good football. They are difficult to beat at home, but this is their biggest test so far, and a solid defence will be needed to keep City’s attacking line
yes, we’ve all got the Blues!
at bay. City will come into this game with a point to prove after an average midweek Champions League performance. However, they seem to enjoy this lunch-time fixture slot after scoring four against Spurs last week, Aguero is the key and, if he performs as he did against Spurs, West Ham are in for a torrid time. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Away win West Brom v C Palace Confidence is everything in football and, after a battling draw against Man Utd, the Baggies will be raring to go again. They played with a confident, attacking style and have plenty of pace to cause problems for the Palace defence, If they can score an early goal, they will feel the three points are theirs. Palace stood up to Chelsea in their last game and gave a really good account of themselves. And if they can continue to play with that passion every week, they will stay up. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Home win Sunderland v Arsenal
Sunderland will want to put last week’s poor performance behind them rapidly, but the fixture list hasn’t been kind to them. I doubt they will concede eight goals again, but they are in for a tough afternoon. But it does give them a chance to get a huge confidence boost - win this and the fans may just forgive them. Gunners were off the boil against Hull and looked toothless in attack, so a massive improvement is needed if they are to avoid losing any more ground to the league leaders. They are 11 points behind Chelsea and the title is already beyond them. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Away win Southampton v Stoke The Saints are most certainly the surprise package of the season, I’m not sure what they put in the water down at St Mary’s, but it is certainly working. They demolished Sunderland with a master class of attacking football, led by Tadic. He looks to be an absolute bargain, along with Pelle up front.
Stoke for me were surprise winners over Swansea, but at home they are a difficult team to play against, and they were helped by a little theatrical acting from Victor Moses. This will be a stern test for them, but I can’t see them gaining any points here. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Home win Liverpool v Hull Liverpool’s defending is a joke. Against QPR, they were extremely poor and have a long way to go if they are to secure a top-four finish come May. With Balotelli yet to score a league goal, they need Sturridge back in the team quickly. They look a side short of confidence and leadership. Hull will take plenty from their creditable draw against Arsenal and go to Anfield believing they can win, Injured Jelavic is a big loss for them, but they are physical side and will bully Liverpool’s defence. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Home win Swansea v Leicester Swansea made an excellent start to the
season, but they have been in freefall lately. Defeat at Stoke didn’t help, especially as they lost to a controversial penalty. They need to get back to their attacking ways to restore a little pride back in their game if they are to finish in the top 10. Leicester also started well, especially as they had a difficult opening few games against the bigger teams. They now have fixtures from which they should take points, but they have stuttered slightly. Ulloa has stopped scoring - and nobody has stepped up to the plate. Prediction: Draw Beat Benson: Home win Burnley v Everton Will Burnley win a game this season? That’s the big question, yet you have to feel for them a little as they have been close in a few matches. But they have found the Premier League very tough. They must beat the teams in and around them if they are to stand a chance, but they can’t even do that. It stands to reason that their lack of goals is letting them down. Everton showed last week why they finished fifth last season. They were strong and took their chances against Aston Villa when they came around. But the Europa League is a distraction for them, so maybe Burnley will catch them tired. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Draw Spurs v Newcastle Spurs have been close to a top-four finish over the last few seasons, and that is their target again. But failure to sign a decent centre-forward in the summer is costing them. Soldado scored goals for fun in Spain, but he has not adapted to the English game - he can’t even get on the scoresheet with a penalty! They need January to come round, but who will be available? The
pressure lifted a little on Newcastle boss Alan Pardew last week after the Magpies’ win against Leicester. But that will count for nothing unless they kick on from that result and start gaining points regularly. They are a good team on paper and just need the belief now. Prediction: Draw Beat Benson: Home win Man Utd v Chelsea Just when you thought they’d got their season on track, United were derailed by West Brom and lucky to escape with a draw, so their problems continue. Van Gaal still believes they can win the league, but defeat here would put them 13 points adrift of their opponents - and they will not make that up! Chelsea have only one fit striker, Didier Drogba, but are his best days behind him? Fortunately, they have plenty of other players who know where the goal is. We know United’s defence is not the best, and Chelsea are capable of ripping them apart. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Draw QPR v Aston Villa Harry Redknapp seems to have gone into meltdown with an outspoken attack on one of his players. That is certainly not good for morale - and it is even worse, given that they are bottom of the league. They need to stand together as a squad if they are to turn their woeful season around. It is a good job Villa picked up early points because otherwise, hey would also be in the relegation places. As it is, they are just three points above QPR, and the key for them is Benteke. Results will come if he can get back to scoring goals. There is no truth in the rumour that the loss of Roy Keane’s beard has anything to do with their dip in form. Prediction: Draw Beat Benson: Away win
