Activist has a broken leg after Navy rams oil-protesters’ boat A 23-year-old Italian, travelling in a Greenpeace speedboat rammed by a naval launch, was thrown into the water and suffered a broken leg.
She was rescued by the military and airlifted to a Gran Canaria hospital with cuts and the fracture. Three other campaigners were also injured, though not seriously. Along with other several protesters, they were trying to reach the Rowan Renaissance drillship, which began search work for Repsol on Tuesday off Lanzarote and Fuerteventure. Dramatic footage of the incident, taken on board a Greenpeace speedboat and released to You Tube, shows the Navy launches ploughing into another speedboat. A military source said: “They were warned several times over the radio that they were invading the navigation exclusion zone ,and they were asked to move away.” Spanish Defence Minister Pedro Morenés waded into the row, saying the Navy had acted in “absolute proportion” and in compliance with a “legitimate” government order. He said there were “more vessels” trying to board the drillship, and that the Naval boats were “trying to comply with the order to not place the safety of the ship and its operation in danger”. He added that the Ministry had given all appropriate information about the incident to both the Public Works Ministry and the Solicitor General’s office in the Canaries. Morenés said they would decide whether Greenpeace had committed any administrative offence by disobeying an order to remain at least one nautical mile from the Repsol ship.
But the attack was condemned in the Canary Islands as an “injury to all Canary citizens, showing the utter contempt of the Spanish Prime Minister to local people saying a resounding No to oil exploration”. Mario Rodriguez, director of Greenpeace Spain, said in response “It’s telling that the Spanish Government would so quickly support the interests of an oil company, Repsol, against a peaceful environmental organisation which stands alongside millions of people who oppose reckless oil exploration.” The incident occurred as environmentalists held a stand-off with the Spanish authorities. Greenpeace says it went to the area to make a peaceful protest about Repsol’s drilling plan, to which hundreds of thousands of people have objected, including the Canarian Government, which fears tourism will be ruined. The video shows the captain of Greenpeace’s main vessel Artic Sunrise being clearly warned to move away
from the area, which he did, retreating “a few miles to guarantee the safety of its activists”. The international protest group finally withdrew its campaigners, following two days of protests around Repsol’s drilling boat. However, it has pledged to continue - and the Canaries’ Government will stage its own demonstration in the next
week over the Spanish Government’s decision to allow drilling. Repsol spokesman Marco Fraga informed state radio RNE of the company’s decision to begin drilling, stressing that it was a “precision” operation being carried out with “extreme” safety measures in place. Work at the so-called Sandía (watermelon)
site, which lies 54km off Fuerteventura and 62km from Lanzarote, has two targets: one at a depth of 1,920 metres and another at 3,100m. It is being carried out by the Rowan Renaissance, the latest generation ultra-deepwater drillship. The ship, capable of moving around as it drills, costs around one million euros a day
to rent. It can reach depths “four times greater” than those needed at the Canaries site. The Industry Ministry last August authorised Repsol to carry out up to three prospecting operations off the Canaries coast. This is the first, and, depending on its success, the company will decide whether to go ahead with a second, dubbed Chirimoya (custard apple), at a cost of around 100m euros. The third operation, dubbed Zanahoria (carrot), has for now been ruled out. The injured woman named only as Matilde was released from hospital on Thursday afternoon. She said “Many thanks to everyone for the support especially those in the Canaries. We will keep up the fight. Also thank you to the University Hospital of Gran Canaria and Dr. Juan Negrin”. A spokesman for Greenpeace, Juande Fernandez said the young activist is “in very good spirits and is wanting to go home. But we all feel outrage at the disproportionate attitude of the Navy. You can only imagine the pain and fear after falling into the water.”

Freak wave ends the music for swimmer!
A SCOTTISH journalist, in Tenerife for a music festival, found himself in a hospital’s intensive care unit this week after being bowled over by a “freak wave”.
Jim Ferguson, 59, who had flown out for the annual Northern Soul Festival in Las Americas, was left without feeling in the left-hand side of his body after a beach accident. He had been swimming off the nearby Troya Beach when he was scooped up by the wave and dumped on the seabed. Mr Ferguson, from Portobello, on the outskirts of Edinburgh, had to be lifted ashore after being left temporarily paralysed. “I had just decided to call it a day, when
I turned round to be faced with a huge wave,” he recalled. “The sea had been higher than normal, but I’m familiar with this beach and it’s probably the safest in Las Americas. “I tried to outswim the freak wave, but it lifted me up and I landed head-first on the seabed.” The father-of-three realised he had suffered a serious neck injury after feeling a sharp pain during impact. “The waves took me to the shore, and I got a real shock to discover I couldn’t move any part of the left-hand side of my body,” he said. “English tourists saw my distress and carried me from the sea. As I lay there, I was conscious of movement beginning to return. “Lifeguards, who were quickly on the scene, checked me out and
suggested I go to hospital.” Jim,, who works for The Scotsman newspaper, had been following the week-long Northern Soul event with close friend Pat Waugh, from Leigh. She said he was expected to make a full recovery, but added: “When I saw Jim, it was a shock because he had a gash on his head and looked disorientated. We managed to get him changed into dry clothes. “The lifeguards treating Jim were very efficient, and he was in an ambulance within minutes. He is making rapid progress and should not suffer any permanent damage.” Doctors at Hospìten Sur (the Green Clinic) diagnosed bruising and a misplaced bone, But Mr Ferguson, who should be out of intensive care within days, is expected to return home next week.
Battling Rajoy: We’ll weed out tax evaders SPAIN is ready to help lead the fight against tax evasion, according to Prime Minister Mariamo Rajoy. The issue, of “maximum importance, was tackled at the G-20 Summit, held Down Under in Brisbane at the weekend. Rajoy told world leaders: “Spain will be one of the first counties to apply the automatic exchange of tax information provided for in the plan drawn up by the G-20. “This fight against fraud is both a moral and an economic target, and it is an even greater obligation to weed out fraud when society as a whole is making such an effort to overcome the crisis.” He added: “The ultimate goal is for there to be no place left in the world where untaxed wealth can find a safe haven.” Rajoy also made it clear to other heads of na-
tions that the G-20’s approach coincided with his own government’s economic policy, including “structural reforms and strengthened macro-economic policies in Europe”. In his opinion, he said, it was necessary for Europe, and the world as a whole, to co-ordinate policies in order to defeat the crisis in a strong manner. The Spanish experience and its reforms, which Rajoy presented in the first open session of the G-20, were, he said: “Seen around the world as a success story, a model of a society able to turn around a very difficult situation. “The example of Spain is quoted by everyone, and that is something which should fill us all with satisfaction because it adds to fostering the image and international credibility of our country.”
The Spanish leader made it clear that the Summit also served to drive forward multilateral trade negotiations, make progress on strengthening financial regulation and collaboration on the issues of energy and climate change. Rajoy also called for the international community to increase resources to combat Ebola. And on the subject of jobs - or lack of them - he specified that the prime objective was to reduce youth unemployment. In reply to questions from the press about Catalonia and the possible response to the letter sent by Artur Mas, President of the Regional Government of Catalonia, Rajoy said he will soon visit Catalonia to defend “everything I believe in”. He pledged: “I will explain to the people of Catalonia that now is a good time to re-
verse several years of negative growth in the country, and that now is the right time to consolidate all our policies. “I will speak about the economic situation and employment, about generating well-being and wealth - and all those other issues that concern the citizens of Catalonia.” Rajoy reasserted that he did not want them to have to choose between being Catalans and being Spaniards. “I believe it is very good to be Catalan, to be Spanish and to be European,” he stressed. “And no one should be obliged to choose.” Rajoy also said he would speak to them about “a project for the future, a project of a great nation which is present at all the major international forums, such as the G-20”. He recalled: “The world
today is not a world where anyone should be isolated but, rather, they should join up to the major forums for integration because that is where decisions are taken which affect our citizens.” He also placed particular emphasis on conveying to the Catalans that he didn’t want “to expel them from Europe, the Euro or G-20. “I want them to be present there with us,” he said forcefully: “I want to say to them that Catalonia has done well these last few years when it has had leaders that have sought agreement and consensus.” Regarding the actions of the State’s Attorney General, and the alleged pressure by the Government, Rajoy said: “The Government respects the independence of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, and there has been neither any form of pres-
sure applied from anyone in my Government, nor from my party.” Rajoy also reported back on the meeting held on the sidelines of the summit with the Heads of State and Governments of the United States, the UK and Italy, and with the Presidents of the European Commission and Council. He said they decided to take further steps in the negotiations of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, which is a free trade agreement between the EU and the US. To this end, a joint statement was signed to push through the negotiations presently under way. The meeting, which was also used to tackle the situation in Ukraine in light of the latest events, agreed to defend the territorial integrity of this country.

Ring road to nowhere! TO the surprise of nobody, there is another delay to the long-overdue opening of the TF1 ringroad.
Tenerife Cabildo and the Canary Islands Government signed an agreement last month, which saw four million euros poured into the project in an attempt to get the final stretch of the TF1 completed by January. The last remaining section on the west coast is now scheduled for completion in mid2015. However, it is hoped that some of the “missing” section can be opened soon. The financial agreement between the Cabildo and the Government stipulates that by 15th January, the route between Santiago del Teide and Guía Tejina must be open to the public. This commitment depends on work resuming in El Bicho tunnel. Yet Roads Minis-
the Vera Erques is going well and Delgado estimates that this stretch will be finished on time. With the implementation of the planned section, hopefully in January, this will leave the final section, linking the road to Adeje. One of the tasks delaying the entire pro-
ter José Luis Delgado warned that they had not been given the order to resume work, even though he believes that could jeopardise the agreement being fulfilled. And this delay is not the only drawback. The El Bicho tunnel is causing logistical problems that “need the technical clearance, which it is not yet assured”,
said Delgardo. “We will fight to make it so, and make sure the agreement is fulfilled.” That fighting talk is positive news, but Delgado knows there is a problem. All sides signed the agreement, which states that the route between Santiago del Teide and Tejina must be open in both directions. Meanwhile, work on
ject is the Vicácaro viaduct. Initially, this was meant to take six months, but the delay has been in sourcing the materials from Italy. This should arrive on the Island in the next month and then work can begin, which would give an opening date of around June.

The no-rain pain IT has not been a good week for meteorologists. In America, they are giving the weathermen a bit of a kicking for not giving people in New York enough warning about the icy storm that landed on Wednesday.
Some regions of Buffalo got over five feet of snow. That’s the size of Kylie Minogue! Over here, the Met Office has been criticised for giving too strong a warning. You may remember the storms last month, which brought chaos to Santa Cruz. The politicians to quote B*Witched, “Blamed it in on the weathermen” rather than do something about an 18th-century drainage system servicing a city at the bottom of a mountain. Fast forward to this week and on Monday, the first rumblings of a decent storm started popping up on Facebook. This was a cue for the usual circus of Chinese
whispers, and forecasts of the four horsemen turning up. However a simple look at the weather charts told a different story. Yes there was some nasty rain heading our way, but nothing to rival the storm of last November. Tuesday saw the standard weather alert - and my jaw hit the floor when it came up Orange. This was surely an error. It wasn’t. Save for a few hours from around 2am on Wednesday morning, there has been no storm here to speak off. Yes, the North of Tenerife had it heavier, and Gran Canaria seems to have had it much worse. But a first-year weather girl could see that was coming. And yet the orange alert, as I type, is still in place. But apart from some local showers over the next few days, at worst it will be like Manchester in July. Of course, it’s all politics. It’s like Goldilocks is in charge. October too blasé. November too cautious. Maybe in December we will get it just right?

100-year
eruptions?
Don’t you believe it THIS week marks the 105th anniversary of the last volcanic eruption in Tenerife, which occurred in the El Chinyero vent on the Santiago Ridge, not far from Santiago del Teide.
It lasted for nine days, from 18th November 1909, and as these pictures show, lava spewed into the air and some villages had to be evacuated. Thankfully, there was no recorded loss of life. When you hear of eruptions in Tenerife, you think instantly of Mount Teide, but she has not erupted since around 850AD. The 1909 eruption came as a surprise as there were no real warning signs. The previous eruption happened in the summer of 1798, when Pico Viejo erupted in Las Cañadas
de Teide. Pico Viejo has always been “busier” than Teide, and the 1798 blast lasted a couple of months. The 1706 eruption in Garachico saw considerable lava flow, as did the Guimar eruption on New Year’s Eve 1704. You can only guess what the locals at the time thought of that as an introduction to the new calendar year! The 1706 event buried the town and port of Garachico at a time when it was, essentially, the Tenerife capital and most important point
on the Island. There were lots of fatalities. The 1492 eruption was sighted and recorded by Christopher Columbus, of all people. He was on route to the New World when he saw the “great fire in the Orotava Valley”. His geography was slightly out because it was the Boca Cangrejo vent which went up. Maybe he was a little distracted by the thought of seeing his mistress in La Gomera! It’s these eruptions that give off the local myth of an eruption
every 100 years. It’s easy enough to understand: 1909, 1798, 1706, 1704, 1492. You can see why that is accepted, but the Island and the mountain go back millions of years. We know for a scientific fact that Montaña Reventada went off in 1066, while the Battle of Hastings was being fought. We also know that Teide erupted around 850AD and that, 100 years earlier, Volcán Negro spewed her lava. But the Islands had been quiet before then. There were just a couple of eruptions since Jesus was born, and we know that there were just two dozen from then, all the way back to 7500BC. In the highly unlikely event of an eruption, let alone one which places your life in danger, the local authorities have action plans in place. These are constantly reviewed, so don’t go running to the airport just yet!

Catalan leader battles on
THE Catalan government, buoyed by the recent unofficial vote on self-rule, will decide before the year is out whether to hold early elections in the region.
Regional leader Artur Mas says that if the central government refuses to discuss the possibility of a new, binding referendum on independence, he may call elections to measure popular support for his drive. Catalan government spokesman Francesc Homs told regional radio station RAC1: “It’s not about spending our days wavering over what to do, but about spending the minimum necessary time, around a month, “Before the end of the year we need to know whether we are moving
this way or that.” Mas, of the moderately-nationalist CiU bloc, met representatives of other pro-independence parties, as well as the Catalan Socialists (PSC) last Thursday, to see whether they might form a grand coalition to run in these hypothetical early elections together. Homs said there was a distinct lack of agreement, but added: “There is a desire to find solutions.” Mas also plans to contact representatives of civil society, social agents and business associations. Of the possibility that state prosecutors might complain officially about Mas and some of his aides for organising the 9th November vote, despite a Constitutional Court freeze, Homs said Catalan officials were “completely calm”. He also suggested that investigators should look into allega-
tions that the Popular Party (PP) used its position in government to try to pressure the Attorney General’s Office into starting legal proceedings against Mas over the ballot. “In a normal country, this type of statement and political pressure would require an indepth investigation,” said Homs. “What leaders and elected officials of the PP did was deplorable and should be investigated.” Alicia Sánchez-Camach, head of the PP’s
Catalan branch, said on a TV programme shortly after the ballot that Mas would soon receive a formal complaint from the Attorney General’s Office, and even detailed the crimes of which he would be accused. The statement sparked concerns about the impartiality of state prosecutors, who earlier last week complained that the government had been interfering with their work to speed up action against the poll
A SURVEY by anti-slavery campaign group Walk Free has revealed that nearly 36 million people worldwide are living in virtual captivity.
It uses slavery in a modern sense, rather than as a reference to the broadly outlawed traditional practice of people being held in bondage and treated as another person’s property. The Index estimate is higher than other attempts to quantify modern slavery, although in 2012 the International Labour Organisation reckoned that almost 21 million people were victims of forced labour. Walk Free says it found evidence of slavery in all 167 countries it surveyed. The report says Africa and Asia face the biggest challenges in eradicating slavery, while the prac-
instigators. But the complaint has been postponed as the Government and state prosecutors wrangle over who should be charged, what to charge them with and, above all, who should do the charging. Last Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría noted that the Government would respect the Attorney General’s Office’s decisions on the matter, “since it is an autonomous agency”.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Eduardo Torres-Dulce sought to take pressure off himself by issuing a reminder that, as well as the Catalan Attorney General, the Catalonia regional High Court was also dealing with the matter. “What we have to decide is whether we need to file a complaint, if we deem it proper procedure,” he said. “We will do so when we feel that we have all the elements to consider the complaint.”
Millions still enslaved
The total is 20% higher than the 2013 figures because of better methodology. India has the most slaves, and Mauritania has the highest percentage. The group’s Global Slavery Index report defines slaves as people subject to forced labour, debt bondage, trafficking, sexual exploitation for money and forced or servile marriage.
tice is least prevalent in Europe. The report also says that more than 14 million people live as slaves in India, with China next, featuring more than three million slaves, followed by Pakistan and Uzbekistan. Russia is ranked fifth the country’s economy is said to rely on enslaved migrant workers in the construction and agricultural sectors. Meanwhile, Mauritania has the highest number of slaves as a proportion of its population, at 4%, with many people in the African country inheriting their slave status from their ancestors. The report calls for much wider interna-
tional co-operation on slavery. It wants governments to increase penalties for trafficking and to put pressure on businesses to clamp down on the use of slaves in their supply chains. The Global Slavery Index was published last year for the first time. The rise in the overall figure from 2013 was attributed by the report’s authors to better data and methodology, rather than to an exponential rise in the numbers enslaved. Sahara backed by protesters
THOUSANDS of people demonstrated in Madrid on Sunday in support of independence for the disputed territory of Western Sahara.
It is a former Spanish colony in north-west Africa, and around 3,000 protesters marched from Atocha railway station to the central Plaza de la Provincia behind a banner declaring: Sahara Free now! Banners from many parts of Spain were held aloft at the demo, which also included live music and street performers dressed in the red, green, black and white of the traditional Saharawi flag. “We believe the Saharawi people have the right to self-determination,” said Jose Taboada, President of
the Co-ordination of Spanish Associations of Solidarity with Western Sahara. The group, which organised the protest, wants the territory to vote on independence, and Taboada said: “This is a scream to demand that the Spanish Government intervenes to help the Saharawis to be able to vote to decide what they would like to be. Western Sahara, larger than Britain but with a population of under one million people, has lucrative phosphate reserves, rich fishing grounds and potentially oil. Morocco took control of most of the territory in November 1975, when colonial power Spain withdrew. This prompted a guerrilla war for independence which lasted until 1991, when the United Nations brokered a ceasefire and sent in a
peace-keeping mission. The agreement also directed a referendum in a few months, under which Saharawis would vote either for independence or to integrate with Morocco. Unsurprisingly, that vote has yet to take place. Local Saharawi people have long campaigned for the right to make up their own minds, but most Moroccans now view the territory as a part of their kingdom. Morocco wants talks about self-rule for the territory under Moroccan sovereignty, but the territory’s Algerian-backed Polisario Front independence movement has demanded a referendum, to include the option of full independence. Several thousand Saharawis live in refugee camps across the border in western Algeria’s barren Tindouf prov-
ince, or in Moroccancontrolled territory, where they complain of repression. The protest was staged in line with a European conference in Madrid, in support of the Saharawi people. The conference finished with a resolution by the participants, accusing Morocco of preventing the United Nations’ envoy for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross, of carrying out his mission. “The conference renews its support for Christopher Ross, and recognises his determination to carry out his mission,” added the resolution. In 2012, Morocco said it had lost confidence in Ross, claiming he made “biased and unbalanced” decisions about the disputed region. “The Polisario Front and the Saharawi Government until now are convinced by the Saharawi public opinion of the need to continue on a peaceful and diplomatic path,” the head of the Polisario, Mohamed Abdelaziz, told AFP on the sidelines of the Madrid conference. “The situation in the region is dangerous, with a real increase in the causes of instability as the situation in Libya, Mali and the Sahel region in general show,” he added. “The Saharawi republic and the Polisario Front are necessary forces to protect stability and moderation, to protect the region against a slide towards extremism,” he added. “The one who has chosen war and escalation and extremism is, unfortunately, Morocco. “Europe and the United States have expressed concern that the conflict, because it has soured relations between Morocco and Algeria, is preventing the two neighbours from working together to contain Islamist violence in the region.”
Something Stupid, but Robbie act can sing on THE Robbie Williams tribute act, discovered in Tenerife performing the singer’s greatest hits while claiming nearly £8,500 in incapacity benefit, has escaped a jail sentence.
James Crockett, who had surgery for a serious back problem in 2002 and was nearly paralysed. said he was too ill to work. Yet he was fit enough to travel here to perform chart-topping hits by the former Take That singer and Michael Bublé in 2012. Crockett, whose stage name is Andy James, admitted failing to tell the Department for Work and Pensions that he was no longer unable to work for most of 2012. The 43-year-old from Skipton, West Yorkshire, whose website maintains he is the “only choice” when it comes to Robbie Williams’ impersonators, illegally claimed the cash throughout the year. His separate Bublé tribute-act webpage says: “He delivers Bublé’s greatest hits with the same flamboyance and panache as the man himself”. Crockett was spared jail following a hearing at Bradford Crown Court, even though the judge previously said the public were “outraged” by benefits cheats. Judge Durham Hall told Crockett: ‘All the while, you were strutting your stuff on various stages in this country and abroad. “Clearly, your breach was particularly deliberate and wilful, and the public are fed up and outraged when they pay their taxes - if they are
lucky enough to have a job at all, - and then see somebody living to some extent an interesting, if not high, life and pocketing £8,500.” The judge said he had intended to imprison Crockett but, having considered the current sentencing guidelines, a jail term of about two months would be derisory. The court heard previously that Crockett had suffered medical difficulties for a number of years, including a stroke, and was advised by his GP to move somewhere warm because of problems with his back. Prosecutor Emma Downing said that when initially questioned about his offending, he denied being dishonest and said he was ignorant of the benefit system. But the court heard that Crockett had eventually pleaded guilty to the charge. He is now repaying, voluntarily, £40 per month for the £8,463 he claimed. Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC decided against a jail sentence and imposed a 12-month community order, which includes 150 hours of unpaid work and a three-month home curfew between 7pm and 7am. He will also pay costs of £200. Barrister Charlotte Worsley, for Crockett, stressed that his benefit claim had not been fraudulent from the outset, and that he had learned his lesson. “He is a man who has had some real health difficulties over the years,” said Miss Worsley. She submitted that the offending was nearly three years ago and added: “He is ashamed and embarrassed that he is before the courts today.”

‘The Graduate’ director dies MIKE NICHOLS, the German-born US director who died on Wednesday, aged 83, will live on forever in the heart of Dustin Hoffman.
Nichols, who had a fatal heart attack, won an Oscar for directing the 1967 classic film The Graduate, which transformed Hoffman into a major star. He was also Oscarnominated for his work on Working Girl, The Remains of the Day, Silkwood and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Nichols was one of only 12 winners of all four major US entertainment awards: an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. His last film was 2007’s much-acclaimed Charlie Wilson’s War, starring Tom Hanks and Julia
Roberts. The director was married to News presenter Diane Sawyer - his fourth wife - whom he wed in 1988. Nichols had been working on an HBO film adaptation of Master Class, the Terrence McNally play about opera star Maria Callas, starring Meryl Streep in the lead role. The film was to reunite the director with Streep, who had worked with him on 1983’s Silkwood and on stage in a 2001 production of The Seagull. Nichols began his career in the late Fifties as part of a comedy duo with Elaine May. They released three bestselling records, one of which won the Grammy for best comedy album in 1962. Switching to directing, he made his Broadway debut with Neil Simon’s Barefoot In The Park, starring Robert Red-
ford. The show was a hit and earned Nichols his first Tony award in 1964. The following year he picked up Tonys for productions of Simon’s The
Odd Couple and Luv. Moving to the big screen, his first directorial project was 1966’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? It starred
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, and brought Nichols his first Oscar nomination. But The Graduate landed him a first Oscar for directing, and also thrust Hoffman into the limelight with his magnificent performance in more ways than one opposite Anne Bancroft Nichols continued his success on both the stage and screen for the rest of his career, covering a diverse range of genres. He once said: “I never understand when people say, ‘Do you do comedy or tragedy?’ I don’t think they’re very much different. They both have to be true, and there isn’t a great play in the world that doesn’t have funny parts to it.
“The whole idea is to reflect life in some way, which means, surely, you have to have both.” His other film successes include an adaptation of Joseph Heller’s cult novel Catch-22, Silkwood, Eighties’ hit Working Girl, The Birdcage and 1998 political comedy Primary Colors - purportedly a riff on Bill Clinton’s presidential campaign. He also directed 2004 film Closer, which saw its stars Clive Owen and Natalie Portman nominated for supporting acting Oscars. His last Oscar nomination was for 1993’s The Remains of the Day, which Nichols produced and was nominated for best picture. The director also tried his hand at musicals on stage, winning a Tony in 2005 for his work directing the Monty Python musical Spamalot on Broadway. He won his ninth Tony in 2012 for his Broadway production of Death of a Salesman, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Andrew Garfield. And he was a hit on television as well, winning his first Emmy for the 2001 TV movie Wit, starring Emma Thompson. He won a second two years later for the HBO mini-series Angels in America, about the Aids crisis. The cast included Thompson, Streep and Al Pacino. Besides his wife, Nichols is survived by three children.

Fond farewell to an eccentric!
THE Duchess of Alba died yesterday (Thursday) at her Seville home, at the age of 88 following a short illness.
She was one of Spain’s wealthiest aristocrats, who was also listed as the world’s most-titled noble. Maria del Rosario Cayetana Fritz-James Stuart had more than 40 titles through a series of marriages by her ancestors, which made her the noble with the most officially-recognised titles in the world, according to Guinness World Records. But she will always be known and remembered as the Duchess of Alba. She revelled in her unofficial role as the “queen” of the gossip press in Spain, and having her private life ana-
lysed in detail by the media did not bother her one bit. At times, it was actively encouraged! “If they forget you, you are nobody,” the Duchess told Spanish magazine Yo Dona in September 2011, a month before her third wedding. The eccentric socialite, also one of Spain’s richest women, is survived by her husband, Alfonso Diez, who is 24 years younger than her. They married in 2011 when she was 85 in a ceremony which raised some eyebrows. But she overcame opposition from her children by giving them their inheritance in advance. Snr Diez formally renounced any claim to her wealth, which is estimated to be between 600m euros and 3.5bn. “I don’t like to talk about money,” she wrote in her autobiogra-
phy. “Many people confuse having cash with having assets - we’ve never had a lot of cash!” The Duchess was well known for her trademark frizzy hair and unique dress sense. She was related to Winston Churchill, and as a girl she shared toys with Elizabeth, England’s future Queen, while living in England. A previous Duchess of Alba was a muse of artist Francisco Goya in the 18th century, and she was rumoured to be the subject of La Maja Desnuda, his famous portrait of a reclining nude which hangs in Madrid’s Prado gallery. The Duchess tells in her autobiography of how Spanish artist Pablo Picasso asked her to pose nude to recreate the painting, but her conservative first husband forbade it. It was something she regretted!

Sex: Paying the price! A MAJOR study into the sexual habits of British men reveals that more one in 10 have paid for sex.
Most of the 11% who confessed had visited sex tourism hotspots such as Bangkok and Amsterdam. The report, published in the Sexually Transmitted Infections journal, said paying for sex was linked with other “hedonistic and risky behaviours”, including binge-drinking and drug-use. And those who had paid for sex in the past five years were twice as likely to be diagnosed with a sexually-transmitted infection (STI) such as HIV, syphilis or gonorrhoea. Yet it’s not the traditional “lonely older men” coughing up, but young professionals in their late twenties and early thirties. And those who had paid for sex in the past five years were twice as likely to be diagnosed
with a sexually-transmitted infection (STI) such as HIV, syphilis or gonorrhoea. A University College London team analysed data from the Third National Survey of Sexual Attitudes and Lifestyles. Their initial study found couples were having less sex than in the Nineties, so they turned their attention to the practice of paying for sex. Just 0.1% of women aged 16-74 surveyed had paid for sex, but 11% of the men said they had at some point in their lives. Of the 6,108 men surveyed, 3.6% had paid for sex in the past five years, and 1.1% in the past year. On average, the men who had paid for sex had more than double the number of sexual partners: 32 compared with 14. Lead researcher Dr Cath Mercer told the BBC: “I was most surprised that it is not paid partners making up most of the total,
but they are having more partners generally. These men tend to be highly sexually active.” Other characteristics of those likely to pay for sex included being single, having a managerial or professional job
- and drug use! Nearly two-thirds of them reported paying for sex abroad, with Europe and Asia the major destinations. “It could be down to opportunistic reasons, such as a lads’ weekend
away, when paid-for sex is available,” said Dr Mercer. “It’s something they wouldn’t necessarily do at home, but in that situation it happens. Yet there are other reasons as well.
“What we do in the UK won’t stop men paying for sex, and we may push them abroad even more.” She said sexual health clinics needed to see paying for sex as a warning sign of other risky behaviour for spreading infections, such as having multiple partners. Natika Halil, Director of Health and Wellbeing for sexual health charity FPA, said: “This study shows that men who have paid for sex are disproportionately affected by STIs, and it’s vital we reinforce ‘prevention over cure’ sexual health messages. “We heard from many men over the years who had paid for sex abroad and returned to Britain in a panic because they didn’t know if they had an STI. “The best way to avoid this is to keep a supply of condoms with you. And if you do have sex, make sure you use them. If you know you have taken a risk, it’s important to get tested as soon as possible.”

Prisoner not guilty after 39 years inside AN American prisoner, who avoided the death sentence and instead spent almost four decades in jail for murder, will walk free today (Friday) without a stain on his character.
Ricky Jackson, the longest-held US prisoner to be exhonerated, will be released after an astonishing 39 years behind bars. The 57-year-old was jailed alongside two other men over the 1975 murder of Cleveland debt collector Harold Franks. Mr Jackson, initially sentenced to death, had the judgement commuted to life following an error in the paperwork. He was convicted on the testimony of 12-year-old Eddie Vernon, who claimed to have witnessed the attack. But this week, Mr Vernon, now 53, admitted he had lied after confessing to a pastor that he was actually on a school bus at the time
of the killing - a fact verified by several witnesses. He told a judge his story had been based on information from the police, who fed him details, and a friend. There was no other evidence connecting Mr Jackson to the murder. Cleveland police have since linked another man to a revolver and a green convertible car, spotted at the scene of the crime. Court records show the man was arrested three years later for aggravated murder in connection with a spree of robberies. Mr Jackson wept loudly as Judge Richard Mc-
Monagle dropped all charges. “The state is conceding the obvious,” said Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Timothy McGinty. Mr Jackson’s co-accused, brothers Ronnie and Wiley Bridgeman, have now filed for a retrial. Wiley remains in prison, while Ronnie was released in 2003. Both had been on death row until Ohio temporarily abolished the death penalty in 1978. “One of them came within 20 days of execution before Ohio ruled the death penalty unconstitutional,” said lawyer Mark Godsey.
Uncooked chicken juice increases food poisoning
THE juice from uncooked chicken gives the germs responsible for food poisoning the perfect environment in which to multiply. That’s the conclusion of the Institute of Food Research, whose study showed that the persistence of campylobacter - a group of bacteria which, commonly, cause food poisoning - is enhanced by chicken juice. Organic matter exuding from chicken carcasses provides the bacteria with a perfect environment to flourish in the food chain. The findings, say researchers, highlight the importance of cleaning surfaces during food preparation. And they hope it will pave the way for new, more effective ways of cleaning that can reduce incidences of campylo-
bacter. The researchers collected the liquids produced from defrosting chickens. They found it helped campylobacter attach to surfaces and, subsequently, form biofilms. These are specialised structures some bacteria form on surfaces, which protect them from threats to their environment. Study leader Helen Brown said: “We have discovered that this increase in biofilm formation was through chicken juice coating the surfaces we used with a protein-rich film. “This film then makes it much easier for the campylobacter bacteria to attach to the surface, and providing them with an additionally-rich food source.” Campylobacter are not a particularly hardy species of bacteria, prompt-
ing researchers to understand exactly how they manage to survive outside their usual habitat, which is the intestinal tract of poultry. They are sensitive to oxygen, but bacteria protect themselves with a layer of slime during the biofilm formation. This also makes them more resistant to antimicrobials and disinfection treatments. Understanding this, and how campylobacter persists in the food production process, will help efforts to reduce the high percentage of chickens reaching consumers contaminated with the bacteria, Although thorough cooking kills off the bacteria, around 500,000 people suffer from campylobacter food poisoning each year in the UK.

Bill Cosby under fire from rape allegations NETFLIX, an American on-line video streaming service, has shelved a Bill Cosby comedy special following allegations against him of sexual assault.
The 77-year-old comedian/actor should have been streamed from Thursday (27th Nov), but it is now unclear whether the show goes on at all. The company’s announcement came shortly after Tuesday’s airing of an interview with a model and TV host, who claimed Cosby sexually assaulted her in 1982. John P Schmidt, Cosby’s lawyer, had said previously the comedian would not be commenting. He said the allegations were a “decade-old and discredited” and that he did not intend to “dignify them with any comment”. A follow-up statement amended the earlier denial to say it did not refer to Andrea Constand, whose civil action against him was settled in 2006. The latest allegation came from TV presenter Janice Dickinson, who accused Cosby of sexually assaulting her after a dinner date in Lake Tahoe, California. “The next morning I woke up and I wasn’t wearing my pyjamas,” she told Entertainment Tonight. “I remembered before I passed out that I had been sexually assaulted.”
Dickinson claimed she had written about the alleged assault in a 2002 autobiography, but had been pressured by Cosby’s lawyer and her publisher to remove the details. Dickinson, a contestant in the 2007 series of ITV’s I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! is one of several women to have accused Cosby of sexual assault, going back almost 30 years. Cosby remained silent during a US radio interview on Saturday when he was asked to comment on the accusations. The veteran celebrity, best known for playing Cliff Huxtable, benign patriarch of an AfricanAmerican family in hit US sitcom The Cosby Show, will allow only his lawyer to answer questions on his behalf - and then, on Cosby’s web-
site only. “Over the last several weeks, decade-old, discredited allegations against Mr Cosby have resurfaced,” writes Mr Schmidt. “The fact that they are being repeated does not make them true. Mr Cosby does not intend to dignify these allegations with any comment.” Only after Hannibal Buress called Bill Cosby a “rapist” last month in his comedy act - a clip of which became an internet hit - did the public outcry begin seriously. The first allegations against Mr Cosby came to light in 2005, when two women publicly accused the comedian of drugging and sexually assaulting them while they were unconscious. One of the women, Ms Constand, filed a civil lawsuit against Mr Cosby, which they settled
out of court in November 2006. In the ensuing years, more women have come forward with similar stories - 14 in total - dating back to the Seventies, But the allegations did not generate a significant outcry until last month’s clip. In his routine Mr Buress, who is also black, jokes about the allegations against Mr Cosby, who, he says, has the “smuggest old black man persona”. He adds: “Yeah, but you rape women, Bill Cosby, so turn the crazy down a couple notches.” The extent of the ongoing damage to Mr Cosby’s reputation became clear on 10th November, when a message from his official Twitter account, asking his fans to write captions for photos of the comedian with the hashtag #cosbymeme, was dominated by references to the rape accusations. By that evening, the original tweet and the programme which allowed the creation of captioned pictures, had been removed. Last Thursday, the Washington Post newspaper published a firstperson piece by Ms Bowman, in which she says she has been trying to get her story out for 10 years. She adds: “While I am grateful for the new attention to Cosby’s ‘crimes’, I must ask my own questions. ‘Why wasn’t I believed’? ‘Why didn’t I get the same reaction of shock and revulsion when I originally reported it?’”
Stunned Japan PM calls election JAPAN, which boasts the world’s third-largest economy, has experienced a shock shrinkage for the second quarter running, leaving the country in recession, technically.
Gross domestic product (GDP) fell 1.6% from July to September, compared with forecasts of a 2.1% rise. That followed a revised 7.3% contraction in the second quarter, which was the biggest fall since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is widely expected to call a snap election to seek a mandate to delay an increase in the sales tax to 10%, scheduled for next year. The tax increase was legislated by the previous government in 2012 to curb Japan’s huge public debt, which is the highest among developed nations. April saw the first phase of the sales tax increase, from 5% to 8%, which hit growth in the second quarter and still appears to be having an impact on the economy. The economy shrank 0.4% in the third quarter from the quarter previous.
The data also showed that growth in private consumption, which accounts for about 60% of Japan’s economy, was much weaker than expected. Its next tax rise had already been questioned by alreadyweak economic indicators. Glenn Levine, senior economist at Moody’s Analytics, said: “The Japanese economy is in recession and has now contracted in three of the last four quarters. “The most likely course is now a snap election in December, in which voters choose, naturally enough, to delay the tax increase.” Speculation had been growing that Japan’s prime minister would call an election next month to gain support, just two years after his election. Local media are now reporting that Mr Abe is expected to announce that a general election will be held on 14th December. Yoshihide Suga, the Japanese Government’s chief spokesperson, said on Monday that Mr Abe would decide on various steps to take amid the “severe economic situation”. While Mr Abe’s popularity has fallen since he took office in 2012, he is expected to win if an election were called, because the opposition remains divided.

Napolean hat sold for 1.9m euros
A Korean collector has paid 1.9m euros (£1.5m) at auction for a hat worn by French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The two-pointed hat (bicorne), a style widely worn by military officers at the time, was apparently donned by Napoleon during the Battle of Marengo in 1800. It was later offered as a gift to his veterinarian. Monaco’s royal family put the hat on sale, along with hundreds of other items of Napoleon memorabilia, at the auction in Fontainebleau, near Paris. The collection was put together by Prince Louis II of Monaco, greatgrandfather of current monarch Prince Albert. The family are selling the pieces to fund a palace restoration. The auction house listed the hat at an ex-
pected selling price of between 300,000 and 400,000 euros. But sharp-eyed experts predicted the bidding would go far higher. The South Korean buyer eventually paid 1.5m euros, with added fees bringing the final price almost 1.9m euros. The bicorne is one of only 19 Napoleon hats thought to exist still, yet the emperor was said to have worn some 120 similar hats during his career. Although the twopointed hat was a common feature of military uniform, Napoleon wore his sideways, apparently to make him more visible on the battlefield. Napoleon declared himself emperor in 1804 and waged war with other European powers, conquering much of the continent, before his final defeat in 1815.

Pope’s shock phone call to a ‘sex-abused’ driver THE Pope has involved himself in the scandal of 10 priests, who have been relieved of their duties by the Archbishop of Granada.
They have been accused of abusing a young man sexually when he was a minor. The alleged victim reported the case directly to the Vatican, which prompted a personal response from Pope Francis - and an astonishing phone call by by him, According to the Religión Digital website, the young man, now in his twenties, spent years “trying to bury the horror of that [abuse] in the depths of his memory”. But after being spurred on by “the possible damage other boys and girls could be suffering”, he wrote a fivepage letter to the Pope. Then, on 10th August, “Daniel” (not his real name) received a phone
call from an unknown number while driving. “Who is this?” asked the man. “Good afternoon son, this is Father Jorge,” the voice on the phone said, according to a number of sources with whom Religión Digital spoke. “Sorry, you must have made a mistake. I don’t know Father Jorge.” “Well, it’s Pope Francis.” Naturally, the driver was left dumbstruck. “Are you still there?” asked the Pope. “Son, calm yourself. I have read your letter a number of times. “I couldn’t be more upset about it and feel huge pain on reading your story. I want to ask forgiveness in the name of all of the Church of
Christ. Forgive this terrible sin and terrible crime that you have suffered.” The Pope then told Daniel: “There are already people working to resolve all of this.” The Archbishop of Granada has since published a statement defending his actions, saying he had followed the procedure outlined by “canonic discipline”. He carried out a preliminary investigation to verify “if the accusation had any credibility”, and imposed the precautionary measure of removing the accused priests from their ministerial duties. Two lay-persons are also implicated. The information was sent to the Holy See and, once the man’s le-
gal complaint was formulated, the Archbishop “put himself at the disposition of the courts to collaborate in whatever way is necessary”. The diocese says it has followed the principles of “Church discipline” which, in this case, are: “Zero tolerance of abuse and those who commit it; helping the alleged victims and, once the facts are checked, the victims, if there are any, and co-operating with the authorities.” The statement details that the Archbishop “is aware that the vast majority of priests carry out their ministerial duties in exemplary fashion”. It adds: “Nevertheless, it wounds and pains the whole body of the Church immensely that scandals of this nature, whose certainty and reach will, ultimately, have to be determined by the courts, can occur.” The case is now being investigated by Granada Court, and a gagging order is in place.

Dying without that valid will By De Cotta Law THE Spanish notarial system provides more security for those who make a valid will.
That’s because there is a Central Wills Registry, where each notarial will is registered by the notary. The original will is always kept on the Protocol (archive) of the notary where you sign the will. The information at the Central Wills Registry contains the date and place where you made the will; your full name and date of birth, and the names of your parents to assist in identifying you. A valid English will must be witnessed by
two witnesses who are physically present when you sign. They should not stand to benefit from your will, and nor can they be family members. However, although wills can be registered in England, there is no obligation to do so. Most wills are kept at home, or with the solicitor in England who prepared them for you. Leaving Spanish assets in a will It is always advisable to execute a valid Spanish will before a notary if you own Spanish assets. The reason this is important is that property does not generally pass to your surviving spouse automatically in Spain. In the UK you can usually notify the Land Reg-
istry, the banks, etc, to transfer property into your sole name. And in some cases, where the estate is not of a high value, no other formalities are required. If they are, then an application can be made for Letters of Administration on intestacy. This is very different in Spain because the property passes independently to your appointed heirs, and there is a procedure required to prove who should receive it. Spanish law applies the law of your nationality to your estate. Therefore, if you die leaving Spanish assets and have not made a valid will in either country, your heirs need to prove, firstly, the
law that should be applied on intestacy and, secondly, that they are entitled to inherit. This applies to your spouse, even though you may be joint-owners of the assets. For some time, we have been advising British nationals in Spain that it is wise to state the law
you wish to be applied to your estate. While it would be difficult to overturn the application of your national law to your estate in wills made with this clause, there will be added certainty next year. That is when the European legislation changes
to state that you can elect the law to be applied to your succession, and that this will be binding. The important thing to remember is that prevention is not only better than cure in this situation, but it is also less costly than the cure!

Footballers fall foul of taxmen SPAIN’S La Liga football stars have been placed under the taxman’s microscope.
Tax inspections against players suspected of abusive fiscal practices are on the rise, according to Spanish daily El Pais, which has contacted at least six lawyers specialising in tax affairs. Stars such as Sergio Ramos, Iker Casillas and Xabi Alonso have already been targeted, according to the newspaper El Mundo, while other top players are also under scrutiny, including Mascherano, Iniesta and Piqué. One partner at a renowned law firm says: “Right now, four top players at Barça are being investigated.” And another legal expert, who understands that several “international players with Spanish residency” have received a tax agency letter, adds: “There are more cases in Real Madrid that haven’t emerged yet.”
These lawyers warn that the tax agency has “re-interpreted” two operations that players often utilise to lower their tax payments. One is related to the companies who manage the athletes’ image rights. The other involves a fee paid by some clubs to players’ agents for a transfer or contract renewal.
Many of these investigations end with a settlement between the agency and the player, who pays an “intermediate” fee. “A war is being waged between the Tax Agency and Spanish soccer, and it got worse following the confrontation between Javier Tebas, president of the Professional Football League, and Soledad
García, the Tax Agency’s collection director. “Tebas accused her of wanting to liquidate Spain’s soccer clubs,” said a high-ranking treasury officer, who asked to remain anonymous. Another lawyer who works with high-profile footballers players confirmed: “In recent months, there has been a radicalisation of controls
over elite and non-elite players,” The current situation has emerged following the change to a 1996 law which allowed highearning athletes to receive 85% of their salary directly from clubs, and 15% indirectly through an image-rights management company. The largest part of their pay was taxed at around 52%, while the remainder was taxed at 30%. So, for a player making 5m euros, the savings amounted to some 400,000 euros. Over the next three years, though, footballers will be targeted over the issue of imagerights companies or agent fees. This special regime was changed in 2006, but, until recently, tax authorities had turned a blind eye to the high-profile football world. Now, though, inspectors are reviewing the last four years of many players’ tax returns. And another lawyer for a big Madrid law firm says this new trend is gathering pace. Adding: “Over
the next three years, all players will be targeted over these issues.” One legal adviser admitted that the Tax Agency could be right, in certain cases. “Some players registered their homes and cars to their company’s name to lower their taxes, even though the companies had no business activity,” said. Taxmen are also examining the 10% fee agents receive every time a player is signed to a new team, or whose contact is renewed. While the player should be paying this out of his net salary, the club occasionally agrees to do so instead, which means that a player with a fiveseason contract for 5m euros would save himself around half. But Ransés Pérez-Boga, president of Spain’s tax inspectors, insisted that these examples were different from the high-profile cases of Leo Messi or Neymar, who had complex corporate structures set up in foreign countries.

Secrets From The Sky ITV1, 20.00
When the Romans invaded Britain in the middle of the 1st century AD, their military pushed relentlessly north, conquering as they went before coming to a standstill at the edge of Scotlan. It is widely known that when Hadrian built his great wall and it was the most northern frontier in the whole Roman Empire. Except its not entirely the case because the Romans didn’t stop their advance. In fact, they occupied the Southern half of what is now Scotland. In 142 AD, the Romans began building a new wall, a hundred miles north of Hadrian’s Wall, between Glasgow and Edinburgh, named the Antonine Wall after the new emperor Antoninus Pius. The Antonine Wall was a coast-to-coast border at the most northerly outpost of the whole Roman Empire and yet it seems to be Roman Britain’s great hidden secret. Ben considers the site of the wall: “It has that ruthless quality. I mean it’s just straight across the countryside, ploughing through everything. And there’s this air of thought about it’s design, this is classic roman engineering.”

Rugby Union: Scotland v Tonga BBC1, 14.15 Dougie Vipond introduces live coverage as Scotland wrap up their autumn international campaign against Tonga at Rugby Park – the first time Kilmarnock Football Club’s ground has hosted the national rugby team. Vern Cotter’s side will be hoping to avenge the defeat they suffered the last time the teams met in November 2012 at Pittodrie. That match saw Tonga claim their first ever victory over Scotland. Scotland’s record cap holder and points scorer Chris Paterson will be among the studio guests, along with former international Mike Blair. John Beattie and Andy Nicol provide the commentary.

Rose confronts Jack to explain the cause of Amy’s recent strange behaviour. Amy’s past – one which she has worked so hard to suppress and deny - has come back to haunt her and the only way to protect Jack may hurt him the most. Richard discovers a secret about Rose that could destroy her ascent onto The Nine. Meanwhile Richard himself is skating on thin ice as Madison continues to evade his grasp.
It Was Alright in the 1970’s Channel 4, 21:00
With attitudes to feminism, foreigners and family values - and just about everything else - being somewhat different 40 years ago, episode two focuses on good old fashioned British-ness on TV in the 70s. From blacking-up in popular pre-watershed programmes, through to rampant homophobia and shameless xenophobia, the 70s seems to have had a different set of manners and morals, and took a casual approach to sexism and racism. Looking back on some jaw-dropping clips will be the people who made the shows, those who watched them back then and some who weren’t even born as they give their reactions to them now.

Sue continues her dramatic journey up the Mekong reaching Laos, a poor country shaped by Buddhism and Communism, which has hardly changed for centuries. Today, the beauty of its landscapes and people is bringing in attracting foreign tourists in search of un-spoilt Asia. Sue visits Luang Prabang, a beautiful town which was once the Royal City of Laos and is now a Unesco World Heritage site, famed as the centre of Buddhism. Thought to be the home of more monks than anywhere else in Asia, Sue spends a day with the novice monks, and gives a surprising English lesson in the temple’s school.

Remember Me BBC1, 21.00
At the age of ‘eighty-odd’, Tom Parfitt (Michael Palin) sits alone in his terraced house in the otherwise entirely Asian community of a small Yorkshire town, and remembers a strange drowned figure washed up on a beach. Tom carefully fakes a fall to trick social worker Alison Denning (Rebekah Staton) into taking him into residential care. Roshana Salim (Mina Anwar), his friend and neighbour, is upset to see Tom leave, especially when he insists she must never visit. At the old people’s home, Tom meets 18 year-old care assistant Hannah Ward (Jodie Comer) and they like each other immediately. Hannah is puzzled to discover he’s brought nothing with him but an empty suitcase. Social worker Alison visits Tom alone in his room to present a framed photograph of himself as a little boy, which she has brought from his old house to help him feel at home. Mysterious noises bring Hannah running to find that Alison has fallen from Tom’s third floor window. In what looks like a shocking accident, the entire window frame has broken free from the wall. Hannah finds Tom cowering in the corner of the room, claiming: “There’s something missing, and I can’t find it.”

Woolly Mammoth: The Autopsy Channel 4, 20:00
The discovery last year in Siberia of the best-preserved mammoth yet has quickened the pace of one of the most ambitious and controversial projects in science: the cloning of the woolly mammoth. This one is unlike any mammoth found before; when it was dug out of the permafrost, a dark red liquid oozed from the frozen body. Speculation is rife: could the liquid be mammoth blood? And does the freshness of the mammoth’s flesh mean that a clone is now achievable? This documentary follows an international team of mammoth specialists and cloning scientists as they carry out a historic autopsy in Siberia, and follows those who strive to bring these iconic giants of the Ice Age back from extinction. As the animal is carefully dissected and its tusks are examined, the programme reveals the life story of this mammoth in forensic detail.

Spain finds it’s feet SPAIN’S property boom and subsequent crash has been among the most spectacular sequences ever witnessed.
Since the peak in late 2007, house prices have dropped more than 40%. In comparison, the price of US homes fell by 35%, but it has climbed to more than 20% since the trough in 2012. The depleted Spanish market is even more severe when measured in terms of sales and construction, even though there are tentative signs of a bottom forming. Yet buying property overseas is proving more popular this year than it was in 2013, with Spain by far and away the most popular country in which to buy. Despite the popularity among overseas buyers, though, there is evidence of growth levelling off during the third quarter, according
to new research. More on this later. Leading valuation company Tinsa’s price-value series has continued to decline through 2014, but INE, the Spanish statistics office’s residential property price index, looks more benign, with prices up 0.8%,year-onyear in the second quarter following a decline of 1.6% through Q1. The Q2’s small price increase was the first since Q1 in 2008, and this year’s Q3 report will be available early next month. Building permits show the malaise in the Spanish housing sector even more clearly than do prices. From a peak of more than 70,000 during the salad days of 2006-07 (on a 12-month rolling basis) fewer than 3,000 permits are given per month nowadays, which is less than one-20th of the number of permits granted just seven years ago. There are also Turn to page 28.
As the Spanish economy starts to heat up and with property prices going in the right direction, there really hasn’t been a better time to look for your new home. And the Canarian Weekly Property Guide is the first place you will need to look for that great bargain!

Spain bottoming out after the boom-and-bust horror
From page 27. signs of a bottom in building permits, though. In year-on-year terms, permits for new construction are up 30.2% through August (the sixth consecutive positive month), but the series is notoriously volatile month-to-month. But the picture is the same, even when permits are smoothed over 12 months, but they are obviously slower to react. It is worth noting that there was a similarly-sized bounce in permits in 2010-11 as Spain - aided by fiscal stimulus - recovered from the global recession (with a sovereign debt crisis lurking). House transactions, which have improved in recent months, are rising at an annual 6% pace. We’ve had a couple of false starts already, but, with the correlation between permits and housing-starts quite high, this is unsurprising. When Spain escaped the global recession of 2008-09, transactions rebounded more than 10%, and a similar pattern was seen in early 2013, when the euro area was slowly working its way through the sovereign debt crisis. A similar observation can be made regarding mortgages, in which the average value began to rise in 2010 (Spanish GDP growth printed -0.2% in 2010 and 0.1% in 2011 following a drop of 3.8% in 2009). But unlike the false start in 2010-2011, the average mortgage value has been steady for almost two years. The number of mortgages and the total capital lent have also started climbing again, following several years of distress. The change in total capital lent has been positive for the past six months, while the number of mortgages has increased over the past three months. Compared with a peak of more than 129,000 mortgages, the latest reading of just 15,000 represents a huge de-
cline across Spanish households. There are still more than 180,000 loans in default, although this is down from a peak of nearly 200,000. And the proportion remains around 13% because the overall number of loans has declined. Unlike the 20102011 period, though, there are reasons to be cheerful. While even more could have been done, it must be said that Spain, to its credit, has implemented more structural reforms than other beleaguered euroarea members. This has been helped by the parliamentary majority held by Mariano Rajoy and his Partido Popular party, and the benefits are starting to pay off. Competitiveness has improved, employment is rising again - and so are wages, if only modestly. The economy is growing much more robustly than in most of the euro area. In Q1, the GDP gained 0.4% quarter-on-quarter, followed by 0.6% in Q2, while the preliminary estimate for Q3 is that the economy rose 0.5%. This is the fifth straight quarter of positive growth.
For the year, growth will be close to 1.5%, which is better than even our (reasonably optimistic) estimate at the start of the year. In addition, the recently-released European Central Bank stress test gave the Spanish financial sector the green light. None of the 15 banks failed the stress test, and just one failed the asset quality review. Obviously, Spain still faces challenges: the unemployment rate, even though trending down, is more than 23%, and the public budget remains in the red, with an estimated deficit of more than 5%) this year. It could take years before the EU-dictated deficit threshold of 3% is reached, particularly as nominal growth is currently close to real growth, because of stagnant prices (in October, CPI was actually down 0.1% y/y). The foreign sector has also improved, as productivity has risen, and Spain last year recorded its first current-account surplus since the series began in 1990. The stronger foreign sector position has
been helped, not only by more competitive exporters but also by an austerity-induced drop in imports. This should turn around alongside the broader economy and, therefore, growth to a large extent will have to come from the domestic sector going forward. The call for a bottom in Spanish housing may prove premature - prices are still falling according to some indices - but there are enough signs of a trough that we could make the call now. The Spanish housing sector will remain in distress for years, and the recovery is likely to be really protracted, with a large overhang of supply ... but the bottom is in! The peak-to-trough decline of residential property prices vary across indices. As an example, the US Federal Housing Finance Agency’s houseprice index shows a more muted drop of less than 20%. The same can be said with regards to the Spanish house-price indices. But against the trend, the most popular countries for British people to buy an overseas
property remain Spain, Portugal and France. Italy and Turkey are the ones to watch, says the latest quarterly report from the Overseas Guides Company. The firm found that between this January and September,, there was a 17% increase in inquiries compared with the same period last year, rising from 29,299 to 34,287. For Q3 in 2014, inquiries were up by 4.1% yearon-year, from 10,518 to 10,957 in the same 2013 quarter. April to June continue to be the most popular months for would-be home-buyers to view and complete on overseas properties, says the company. Looking ahead, continued growth is expected in the key markets, with mortgage rates in the Eurozone remaining at historic lows, and sterling likely to maintain a comparatively strong value against the euro. There is also a sentiment that the bargain prices of homes in popular parts of Spain, France and Portugal won’t last forever, with signs that hotspots are already seeing slight price rises. Spain is still by far
the most popular country, generating 2,710 inquiries in the third quarter, compared with 2,494 enquiries in Q3 of 2013. In fact, things are looking up for Spain, both in terms of the property market and the economy as a whole. The International Monetary Fund recently announced that the southern European countries will lead the rest of the European Union in terms of economic growth over the next year, and the economy is expected to grow at 1.3% in 2014 and continue by 1.7% in 2015. France remains a firm favourite in second place with 2,575 enquiries. Not only have house prices across the country remained stable over the last year, with average prices even falling in some areas, but France is also now offering interestonly mortgages to nonFrench residents. Star performers in Q3, in terms of growth, were Italy (up 12.7%), Greece (5.2%) and Turkey up (8.5%) in terms of inquiries compared with the previous quarter.

imagine… Mike Leigh BBC1, 22.35 “I say, come and be in my film. Can’t tell you what it’s about. I can’t tell you what your character is. We’ll invent that as part of the process. And you will never know any more than your character knows.” Mike Leigh The only British director to have won the top prize at both Cannes and Venice film festivals, Mike Leigh is one of the greatest living film-makers. Known for low-budget, award-wining films including Abigail’s Party, Nuts In May, Vera Drake, Secrets And Lies and Naked, his latest film Mr Turner is his most lavish film to date. Leigh’s acutely observed tragi-comedies explore the poetry and pathos in the lives of ordinary people, and are borne of an extraordinary working process - there’s no script, no stars and a six month rehearsal period where the actors collaborate with him to devise the film. Despite his collaborative process, every film draws on Leigh’s personal experiences, from growing up in Salford to his troubled relationships with his parents. In this deeply personal and intimate imagine… film Mike Leigh opens up as never before.
UEFA Champions League Live ITV1, 19.30 Adrian Chiles introduces live coverage of the UEFA Champions League match between Manchester City and Bayern Munich from the Etihad Stadium. The Sky Blues need to beat the 2013 winners and win the next game against Roma to keep their hopes alive of qualifying for the knockout stages after a 2-1 home defeat to CSKA Moscow in early November continued their winless streak in Group E. Bayern, meanwhile, have taken maximum points from the group so far with the most eye-catching result being a 7-1 victory over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico in October. Jerome Boateng scored a late winner for Bayern when the two sides met in Munich in September but, with the Germans already assured of top spot in the group, City fans will hope Pep Guardiola rests a few key men. Commentary comes from Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend.

Confessions of a Doctor Channel 4, 22:00 Over the last 50 years Britain has changed almost beyond recognition. Police officers patrolled our streets exuding power and respect, teachers could enforce their authority with the belt and the cane, men in the main were in charge in the workplace, and doctor always knew best. With the onset of increasingly strict regulations, health and safety rules and political correctness, this three-part series, Confessions Of, looks at whether many of our professionals have lost the respect and authority they once held so dear and took for granted. With surprising, candid, shocking and personal confessions, ordinary coppers, GPs and secretaries lift the lid on their working lives.
Waterloo Road BBC1, 20:00 School-based drama. The police descend on Waterloo Road as the hack on Wiredata Systems is traced to the school. Floyd confronts Tiffany andJustin about their relationship, and Sonya’s magazine story causes trouble around the school.

By Andy Briggs I JOURNEYED into the world of guitarists last week and described the dedication, determination and the results their qualities can produce musically.
Now, I would like to shine a light on some of the voices that blow my mind - and the minds of many like me! The Soul music formula has stood the test of time magnificently and remains the most popular of musical genres. It originated in the United States in the Fifties and Sixties, combining African-American gospel, Rhythm and Blues and often Jazz. Since then, it has splintered into many subgenres, such as “Detroit Motown” and “Deep Soul”. It even plays a hugely-influential role in some psychedelic rock, modern rap ... the list goes on. So it is, perhaps, fitting that my two subjects this week are also from the States. They bring to the Canarian coasts the incomparable sound of American Soul . Sebastian Whitaker is a real heavyweight contender when it comes to big-name soul singers on the Island, and rightly so. I can honestly say I have never seen Sebastian in anything other than a three-piece suit. His suits are flamboyant, no doubt, but at the same time sophisticated, and help Sebastian maintain the image of the New York soul man he truly is. I was a waiter in The Corner Bar at Parque de la Paz when I first heard Sebastian sing. I was clearing away the evening’s glasses and washing down the tables. It was my first week and I wasn´t much enjoying it. Then, as if Luther Vandross himself had started singing in my ear, I heard the funky sound of Never Too Much, and it brought a smile to my
39 CW
America’s Got Talent - here!
tired face. Sebastian would sing once a week in the bar next door and, honestly, it was the only night of the week I enjoyed washing down that terrace. Sebastian´s voice is that of an authentic, vintage soul singer. In an era where it is getting harder to find people who can still do justice to a type of music which is extremely hard to imitate, Sebastian is flying high. After hearing him sing while I toiled away, I just had to seek out his show to watch it in full. I managed to locate him on my night off. My word! Was there no end to this man´s talents? Not only did he do a full show of Soul and Motown, but he then added a half-hour encore in which he teamed up with the compere. They told the audience: “Right, you name the tracks, we´ll sing them”... c´mon, really? The guys sang Africa by Toto as if they had been rehearsing for weeks, then Michael Jackson and more. Sebastian Whitaker should come with a label attached, and that
label should read: “If you think you know how to enjoy yourself, think again … cos I’m gonna blow the roof off this place!” On the subject of towering talents, one of the best is Mr.D. This man is a phenomenon. He can sing anything! From deep bass-filled low notes, to impeccable falsettos to a James Brown-style scream, his range is into the stratosphere. Favouritism is not something I encourage, but when you´re around
live music as much as I am, you can grow bored with even the best singers. Mr.D, however, has my jaw planted firmly on the ground every time I hear him. I recall him singing Purple Rain and I thought, “I’m not sure this is much like the original, and I´m not sure I care”. To take a song that is so iconic, and sing it in such a mesmerising fashion - with fascinating alterations that shouldn´t work but somehow do - my God, there is no one who can
do that here - bar him! When you take into account the vocal dexterity he brings to the stage, and his ability to improvise whole verses, filled with meaningful and heart-felt lyrics, there are few left who can contest him. So let us imagine a scenario. The dulcet and flawless tones of Sebastian Whitaker, fused with the creative genius of Mr.D: Atlanta, Georgia meets New York! Actually, there is no need to imagine. The guys as a duo are called
Soul+Soul. And when they get together, expect fireworks. I´m not sure if it is some innate charisma that comes with being American, or just God-given skill, but the chemistry between these men is so natural that it is effortless. They move round the stage as if they both know what the other is thinking, each taking his respective turn in the spotlight. The harmonies in the show are so tight that it feels as though they could implode at any moment. The sounds Sebastian and Mr.D produce are organic - clean and flawless to the point of excellence. As you may have gathered, I’m really fond of Soul+Soul, both as individuals, but especially as a group. And I hope I have inspired you to pull out your old soul records and get listening. More importantly, though, go out and find these two men because it is a privilege to have them performing right on our doorsteps. I have mentioned it before in my various articles - in fact it is, unintentionally, becoming somewhat of a theme. This is a minuscule rock in the Atlantic, yet it provides its residents and visitors with a world of tremendous artists. Now look up to the sky and say Thank you!

La Cava Restaurant
Food heaven I ALWAYS feel excited and, naturally, a little apprehensive when I have no idea where I am being taken to review a restaurant.
But my fears were totally unfounded on this occasion as my companion and I sauntered up
to La Cava, in Los Cristianos. The restaurant, tucked away up a few steps from the harbour car park and Casa del Mar, has been owned and operated by Chef Ludo since 1979. In fact, between Ludo and waiters Felix and Rony, they have put in an incredible 92 years of service there. Add in Ludo’s assistant chefs,
René and Lenka, and they have kept La Cava up and running for over 100 years. And it shows. Far from familiarity breeding contempt, La Cava is proof that expertise and experience add up to excellence. The restaurant is decorated simply - unpretentious and welcoming - with a pleasant terrace and a split-level interior.
And the lighting is neither too stark, nor too subtle. I have a dislike of places where it’s so “romantic” that you can’t see what you’re eating, or too bright that you feel you’re on show! The tables are arranged to accommodate any number of guests, from solo diners and couples to larger groups, including a cosy corner table on the lower level, which can handle eight or more in comfort. The wine list comprises everything you would expect from a restaurant of this standard: house wines from 11.25 euros and the Torres selection at around 14 euros, And there are a few luxury wines available as well. The menu has changed little over time - and it hasn’t had to! And as for the fussy eater, I am delighted to say there was plenty of choice for me. Starters, ranging from 4.60-10.90 euros for the avocado and king prawns, include salads, deep-fried cheese and a creamed spinach gratin. However, we chose the chicken and mushroom vol-au-vent and stuffed courgette. While we waited, we tucked into hot bread and very cold, homemade, garlic butter. The starters arrived: two large vol-au-vents
filled to the brim with creamy chicken and mushrooms, and two rounds of courgette (well, it’s actually “bubango” - a larger, local cousin of the courgette, but with the same taste and texture), stuffed with ham and cheese, breaded and deep-fried. We opted to share the starters between us, as
it would have been rude not to. Is it too early to say I was already in food heaven? T h e m a i n courses again left me spoiled for choice. On the fish menu, you find salmon, prawns, sole and hake, with prices ranging from 12.50 euros to 18.95 for the King Prawn Bourgignon. My companion chose a simple grilled sole. The meat menu contains pretty much everything required: chicken,

roast pork, veal, Hungarian Goulash and a selection of steaks, and costing from 12.50 euros to 18.75 for a large fillet steak with Béarnaise sauce and asparagus. There are also a few specialities of the house, the most popular being the Svickova. It’s a Czech meal consisting of fillet steak, stuffed with bacon and cooked slowly. Once cooked to perfection, it is sliced and served under an incredible vegetable sauce, accompanied with red cabbage and smooth mashed potato. Ludo also makes a phenomenal meatloaf, but I chose the Schaschlik, which is a kebab made from large chunks of fillet steak, served on a skewer with mushrooms, onions, red pepper and bacon. Again, we were not dis-
appointed. The sole was excellent, so beautifully cooked that removing the bone was mere child’s play. Ludo served it with a fresh spinach salad containing sliced almonds, strips of hard-boiled egg, crispy fried onions and cheese with a sweet vinaigrette. This isn’t on the menu, but maybe it should be because it was delicious, and a sublime accompa-
niment for the delicate fish (Ludo says: “If you like it, ask for it!”). The Schaschlik was cooked to a perfect medium, and served with a light salad. We shared the main meal, too, noticing that the fillet steak was so tender that my companion cut it with her fish knife! We also ordered “fries”, but don’t expect “chips” in this establishment, Ludo’s fries are crispy,
deep-fried slices of small potatoes. Incidentally, if you are taking children to La Cava, do not expect nuggets, burgers, sausages or beans. The children’s menu is “real” food, scaled-down or slightly-adapted versions of the main menu: smaller steaks, breaded fresh chicken breast, etc. The simple dessert menu comprises strawberries and cream, a light chocolate mousse, Camembert with warm bread, and ice-cream. We were so “satisfied” after our meal that even my penchant for mousse and all things chocolate had to take a back seat this time. La Cava is one of those places people visit again and again, mainly because the food is so good that you just have to try everything. Sev-
Tenerife, but do make a reservation. As we left, we noticed that more than 30 covers had already been booked in for the following night. Most diners book for around 7pm, but this means tables are often freed up for those who prefer to dine later. La Cava is open from 6.30pm, Monday to Saturday, and bookings can be made on 922 790 493.

By Val Sainsbury IT has always been a thorny subject with those who have a puff while in a car - and it’s about to get even thornier!
Travelling in a car with a smoker for just one hour can damage a person’s health, exposing him/her to dangerous levels of toxic chemicals, say scientists at the University of California Non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke from three cigarettes showed increased levels
21st November 2014 - 27th November 2014
Toxic worries from drivers who smoke
of carcinogens and other toxins - butadiene, acrylonitrile, benzene, methylating agents and ethylene oxide - in their urine. And that, say the researchers, indicates that second-hand smoke in any vehicle poses a potentially-major health risk. Senior investigator Professor Neal Benowitz said: “This group of toxic chemicals is thought to be the most important among the thousands in tobacco smoke that cause smoking-related disease. “Ours is the first study to measure exposure to these particular chemicals in people exposed to second-hand smoke.
“This indicates that when simply sitting in cars with smokers, nonsmokers breathe in a host of potentially-dangerous compounds from tobacco smoke that are associated with cancer, heart disease and lung disease.”
The researchers analysed 14 non-smokers, who sat in the right rear passenger seat of a car, behind a smoker driving. In an hour, the smokers went through three cigarettes, while the front and rear windows were opened around four inches. Before being exposed to the smoke, and then eight hours afterwards, the non-smokers’ urine was examined for biomarkers of nine chemical compounds found in cigarette smoke. The chemicals are all associated with cancer, cardiovascular disease and respiratory diseases. Seven biomarkers showed a significant
increase following exposure to second-hand smoke. Dr Gideon St Helen, the study’s lead author, said: “This tells us that people, especially children and adults with pre-existing health conditions such as asthma or a history of heart disease, should be protected from this type of second-hand smoke.” The toxic chemicals for which the scientists screened are, they said, “thought to be the most important among the thousands in tobacco smoke that cause smoking-related disease”. But the team did caution that their research might not represent smoking in most cars be-
cause the stationary vehicle used in the research would provide less ventilation than a moving car. Dr St Helen added: “Nonetheless, the air samples we took were similar in make-up to those seen in previous smoking studies which used closed cars - and cars with different ventilation systems in operation. “And so we believe that the general levels of risk to non-smokers that we present is realistic.” The study was published in the Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention journal, published by the American Association for Cancer Research.
Weight-loss surgery can solve that ‘super’ curse SUPER-OBESE is how nearly 40% of under-25s who have weight-loss surgery in the UK have been categorised. Surgeons say this proves a clear failure of strategies to prevent weight gain in young people. Overall, more patients are having weight-loss surgery and, on average, they are getting more obese and more ill by the time of surgery. And a leading bariatric surgeon (weight-loss specialist) says that severe obesity threatens to bankrupt the NHS. These figures are contained in a National Bariatric Surgery Registry report, which includes information on more than 18,000 weight-loss operations in 137 UK hospitals between 2010 and 2013. The operations com-
prised 9,526 gastric bypass procedures, 4,705 gastric-band operations and 3,797 sleeve gastrectomy operations. Bariatric surgery aims to improve the overall health of hugely obese patients, for whom dieting and lifestyle changes have not made any difference. The report concludes that bariatric surgery is both safe and effective, emphasising that there are too many young people reaching levels of severe obesity who need weight-loss surgery. Between 2010 and 2013, 550, young people under the age of 25 had bariatric surgery of some kind, 62 of whom were not even 18. Nearly 40% of these young men and women were already classified as super-obese, with a Body Mass Index (BMI)
of 50 or more), says the report. It adds: “This is a reflection on society’s failings that these patients had already gained sufficient weight to be broadly comparable to patients who are much older.” After analysing procedures for all age groups, the report found more men were being treated with bariatric surgery - up from 16% of all weight-loss operations in 2006 to 26% in 2013. At the time of surgery, male and female patients were, on average, nearly twice the weight they should be for their height, with an average BMI of 48.8. About three-quarters of the men and women treated could not climb three flights of stairs without resting. And, on average, patients had
more health complications and were more ill at the time of their operation than in previous years. But after surgery, say surgeons, more than half of patients (56%) could manage three flights without resting, and the time they spent recovering in hospital decreased, despite the rise in more complex weight-loss operations. The figures also show that, on average, one year after an operation, patients had lost nearly 60% of their excess weight. And a majority of those with weightrelated type 2 diabetes were no longer showing symptoms. Mr Richard Welbourn, consultant surgeon and chairman of the National Bariatric Surgery Registry, said severe and complex obesity
was a condition “which threatened to bankrupt the NHS”. He said the data showed there were great benefits to be gained from bariatric surgery. “In particular, the effect on diabetes has important implications for the NHS,” he stressed. “Cost-effectively, bariatric surgery improves the health of obese patients.” In the report, Sir Bruce Keogh, medical director of the NHS, said: “Obesity and bariatric surgery are rapidly rising up the NHS agenda as a consequence of social and lifestyle choices. “As in all branches of medicine, prevention is better than cure, but this report clearly demonstrates that when required, bariatric surgery is effective and safe.”
Bariatric surgery is used as a last resort to treat people who are dangerously obese and carrying an excessive amount of body fat. This type of surgery is available on the NHS, to treat people with potentially life-threatening obesity only when other treatments have not worked. And around 8,000 people a year receive the treatment. The two most common types of weightloss surgery are: *Gastric band, where a band is used to reduce the size of the stomach so a smaller amount of food is required to make someone feel full *Gastric bypass, where the digestive system is re-routed past most of the stomach, so less food is digested to make someone feel full.

IT’S NOT ALL BLACK AND WHITE NOW
KIM’S SOCHEEKY LOOK TAKES OFF By Ruth Benson
By Carl from Robot
KIM Kardashian (that should give the Editor a chance to run THAT picture) is no stranger to being in the public eye.
WHICH one interests you the most? In the salon, we often have clients with the dilemma: “Which shade do I want to be?” Those who are blonde want to be dark, and vice-versa. Well, there are pros and cons with each of these colours, so let’s start with blondes. Being blonde is one of our most popular colours. When clients first start with colour, they normally begin with highlights, which leads on to full colours . There are so many shades of blonde, from platinum to beige, and from baby blonde to golden. And you all have your favourites. Yet being a blonde seems to change how you feel about yourself and your image. I’ve seen timid women really come out of their shell after turning blonde. It seems to give them more confidence in themselves. But keeping up to your chosen shade isn’t easy, though. There are roots to consider, and also the condition. If you’ve never noticed, blondes don’t actually “shine”. They don’t reflect the light and can look dryer than their darker counterparts. So having this shade needs extra conditioning and lots of TLC. And if you’re not going to look after it, then it can look brittle and straw-like. Plenty of conditioner and a moisturising shampoo is required, not forgetting the weekly masque to really keep on top of it. Think of your make-up
But she has come to prominence even more now. Kim, husband of rapper Kayne West, is not one to shy away from the press and last week, she posed for the cover of Paper magazine with the iconic Jean-Paul Goude naked “champagne incident” photo. The reality star is infamous for her backside and, for the photoshoot, she did not shy away from showing it. As the saying goes, if you’ve got it, flaunt it. For those of you who have not yet seen the photos, the series includes the famous champagne photo as well as a topless and full frontal. The magazine explains why they chose the reality star, sayng: “For our winter issue, we gave ourselves one assignment: Break the Internet. There is no other person we can think of who is up to the task.” The images became the most-talked-about item last week - and
not all of it was positive. Since the photos have been released, the Internet has gone mad with spoofs, from Starbucks to ASDA. The supermarket group have used the same image to promote their £10 champagne, and instead of the caption Break the Internet, the chain has used Don’t break the budget with their low-cost drink. Other spin-offs include Disney character Ursula from The Little Mermaid, and my personal favourite is the use of the image by American talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres. Her and partner Portia De Rossi, have used the idea for their Christmas card design. Last year, the couple also choose to copy an image of Kim Kardashian and then fiancé Kayne West, straddling a motorbike. This year, the photo depicts the couple’s heads on the greasedup body of Kim with the caption: Happy Holidays and a Shiny New Year. Fair play to the couple and, with this in mind, it puts a whole new perspective on personalised Christmas Cards.

routine as well because you may need to add a touch more if you’re going from brown to blonde. Taking away colour from your hair also removes it from your face. Now to the darker colours, which can also have radical effects on your image, even down to skin-tone and clothing choices. Choosing a chocolatebrown, or even down to black, will make your skin look paler; hence, changing your make-up routine, also. Never embark on a drastic colour change such as these without going into the pros and cons with your stylist. Once you have darkened
your hair, it CANNOT be covered up. Firstly, it has to be “STRIPPED”, which can be quite damaging, and then another colour applied - NOT to be tried at home! Apart from this factor, having darker hair always looks shinier and healthier, and it can be used to cover up a multitude of sins. If you’re naturally paleskinned, or have lighter hair, these shades aren’t normally recommended. They can make you look pasty or gaunt if you’re not going to be piling on the warpaint. So if you are undecided as what shade to go for, consult your salon, where you will be guided through all aspects of both shades. Once you’ve chosen, then it’s up to you how light or dark you go. Trust what your professional stylist says to you - and never jump in feet first! You could still be regretting it in years to come if you do!

Johnny, remember us, for a sizeable fortune!
WHEN I was a teenager, I heard with excitement that Marty Wilde and Colin Hicks were appearing at the Empire Theatre in Sheffield.
My friend and I obtained tickets but didn’t actually hear much of the performance because of the screaming - a pre-requisite of concerts in those days. But we were elated when, being at the front of the queue outside the stage door, we were shown in to meet the two stars, who were standing behind a counter signing autographs. Although Marty Wilde was a big star by then, I was interested in Colin Hicks as he was Tommy Steele’s brother … and Tommy was my idol. They looked suitably bored at the interaction with two schoolgirls. Colin Hicks disappeared from the music scene not long after, with Marty Wilde going on to bigger and better things and Tommy Steele becoming a national treasure, also starring in films and

musicals. A nostalgia concert in Sheffield recently advertised Marty Wilde and John Leyton, another blast from the past. Who remembers Johnny, Remember Me? The Who, one of the most popular Sixties’ bands, famously sang “I Hope I die before I get old” in their My Generation anthem. Many stars, of course, rockers or otherwise, didn’t even live to middle age, through an excess of drink and drugs. Lenny Bruce, the con-
troversial US stand-up comedian, who died in his bathroom surrounded by drugs’ paraphernalia in 1966 at the age of 40, had said: “There was nothing sadder than an ageing hipster.” Like him, many didn’t get chance to find out what old age was like! However, there are hundreds of wrinkly pensioner stars who refuse to hang up their guitars and are still rocking on. I’m all for freedom of choice when it comes to “grey labour” and the rights of people my age
to work as long as they want - as long as they are not doing younger people out of a job. But when I read that stars like Status Quo state that they still need the cash from concerts... come on! Do we really have sympathy with these hard-up stories? Rossi who allegedly spent £1.7m on cocaine in the Eighties, recently commented on the high price of burgers, and Parfitt, whose first divorce cost him a £1m settlement, must have earned more in one year than most people will ever seen in a lifetime. I can understand the smell of the greasepaint and roar of the crowd and that, once on stage, all aches and pains are forgotten doing something they have loved for so long. But do they really have to charge so much? Exploitation springs to my mind, and that is the viewpoint of Sheffield’s Bruce Dickinson, of Iron Maiden, who has criticised ticket prices of rock concerts, saying that it is leading to halffull arenas. But still the stars of yesteryear rock on, with one of the most interesting things about some concerts being the
‘Guess who’s the one remaining original member of the band’ game! When the Eagles played the O2 Arena in 2007, it was described as the Once in a Lifetime Event with some tickets selling for £950 at a VIPs’ night. It wasn’t the last event in their lifetime, not by a long chalk and I believe they are still doing farewell tours. Another Last Chance Saloon tour this year is by The Osmonds, David Essex, Showaddwaddy and Bay City Rollers, while tickets for the Royal Albert Hall to mark Eric Clapton’s 70th birthday were a snip - starting at £85! The Rolling Stones’ 50 and Counting Tour to celebrate their 50th anniversary, for which tickets could cost as much as £375 each depending where you saw them, and even more than that on the black market, raked in £77.5 million, to be followed by a tour of the Middle East, Asia, Europe and Australia. All I can say is that people have obviously got more money than sense. If I want to see wrinkles, I’ll look in the mirror! Why do none of these
big earners ever do anything for free? What a thank-you it would be to their devoted followers if they actually played a concert or two just for the sheer enjoyment of it and not for a vast amount of money. Of course, nostalgia is big. Unbelievably, it is over 45 years since Woodstock. Many of the stars appearing in August 1969 are still doing the circuits, such as Joan Baez, The Who, Santana and Crosby, Stills, Nash and not so Young, but many more have long gone to the great stadium in the sky, like Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Even before Woodstock, the Beatles played their last concert together at Candlestick Park in San Francisco on 29th August 1966. It was fitting that the ever-youthful (don’t mention Grecian 2000) Paul McCartney should be invited as the closing act before the stadium was demolished. Described as the perfect American landmark, and much-loved by local people, it is, nevertheless, condemned, to be replaced by a new stadium. Nostalgia can’t get in the way of progress!

VW’s combined all-rounder
VO L K S WA G E N have boosted their seventh-generation Golf lineup with the addition of a second Alltrack model.
The rugged-styled, high-riding variant of the Golf Estate will go on sale in the UK in the middle of next year, with prices starting at around £23,000. This fifth dedicated model in the existing Golf line-up was unveiled at the current Paris Motor Show, which closes on Wednesday. It is positioned between the latest Golf estate and the first-generation Tiguan, which will be replaced. The plan by VW is to provide buyers with the combined practicality of the former and the off-road capability of the latter. In a move mirroring the one taken with the larger and more expensive Passat Alltrack, launched in 2013, the company have provided the Golf Alltrack with a series of off-roader-inspired styling elements. This is an attempt to distant it visually from the Golf Estate, on
which it is based - and which it also shares its steel body. Included are restyled bumpers with handsome plastic protection plates front and rear, black plastic cladding within the wheel arches and beneath the doors, further production plates within the sills, and a set of roof rails. The nominal ride height of the standard Golf Estate has been raised by 20mm, pro-
viding the Alltrack with greater ground clearance for added off-road ability. The firm also plan to launch the Golf Alltrack with a range of three turbo-charged four-cylinder engines: a single direct-injection petrol and two common-rail diesels. They re all mated to their four-wheel-drive 4Motion system, which features an electronic front differential lock
as standard. The sole 1.8-litre petrol develops 177bhp and 206lb ft, providing the 1.8 TSI with a 0-62mph sprint time of 7.8sec, a top speed of 135mph, and a combined 41.5mpg and CO2 rating of 158g/km. The diesels include VW’s familiar 1.6-litre engine, which produces 108bhp and 184lb ft to give the 1.6 TDI a 0-62mph time of 12.1sec and 116mph top speed, along with com-
bined consumption of 60.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 124g/km. Further up the range is a 2.0-litre diesel, offered in two outputs. The first develops 148bhp and 251lb ft, enabling the more affordable of two 2.0 TDI models complete 0-62mph in 8.9sec. It has a top speed of 129mph, a fuel economy of 57.7mpg and CO2 emissions of 127g/km. The higher-powered 2.0 TDI uses the same
engine, but it also benefits from an additional 33bhp and 29lb ft, giving it 181bhp and 280lb ft. This provides the range-topping Golf Attrack model with a 0-62mph acceleration time of 7.8sec, a 136mph top speed, combined consumption of a highly-respectable 55.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 134g/km. The company also claim a braked trailer capacity of 2,000kg.
Annual cost of running a car By Emma at Motorworld
I AM often asked what the additional costs involved are when you buy a car, and the first one is obvious.
It’s the fee for transferring the car into your name., and it varies from car to car. You have to pay 5.5% tax of the official valuation of the vehicle, as stated by Hacienda. Actually, this may dif-
fer vastly from what you are paying for the car, but it is set by the Government and cannot be changed. Tráfico charge a fee for a transfer, which is currently 52,80 euros and most people doing the job on your behalf will charge an administration fee for which they should be able to provide you with an invoice. You would then incur extra costs such as: Car tax Annually, town halls will charge road taxes for each car registered in their municipality. There is normally what is called a voluntary period - normally around 6-8 weeks - when you can pay the sum..
In Arona, for example, this period is from mid-April until the end of May, but you would need to check with your town hall because they are all different. The cost is based either on the size of the engine or the emissions, but the sums are, in general, substantially lower than those in the UK. When a car reaches its 25th birthday it can be exempt from road tax, even if it is not on historical plates. But you have to apply applied in writing to the town hall for this dispensation. ITV A car must have its first ITV when it is four years old, and then eve-
ry two years thereafter until the age of 10, when it will normally go down to annual inspections. Each inspection must be booked, although there is an option to sit at the ITV cente and wait for a slot to go on a waiting list for that day. But I do not recommend this as it sometimes involves a rather long wait. Most garages will book and take your car for an ITV for a fee. Insurance Again, this is an annual cost and a lot of people do this by direct debit and never check prices elsewhere as they are not here when the insurance is due. It can be beneficial to look around. But re-
member that legally, you have to give two months’ notice to the insurance company if you are not going to renew. Otherwise, they are quite within their rights legally to sue you for the premium. And in the current economic climate, this is happening quite often, catching people out. There is also the option for you to change your cover from fully comprehensive to third-party or vice-versa (dependent on age of vehicle). Some Spanish companies will not give fullycomprehensive cover to a car until they have sent out a perito (engineer) to inspect the car, which often caus-
ing a delay. After all, if you have a new car you want to drive it as soon as possible! Other annual costs These are not obligatory, but recommended. If you want your car to return a fair amount of miles, you need to look after it. This means ensuring that annual servicing, or at least an oil and filter change is carried out. If you hear any strange or funny noises, don’t ignore them but go to your garage and get them to check the car out. It maybe something and nothing, but it could be more serious and, if left, could cost a lot more to repair.

30-Second Brain Training Sudoku X...
Just enter the numbers 1 - 9 once in each row, column and 3 x 3 square within the sudoku X puzzle grid. In addition to standard sudoku, the numbers must only occur once in each side of the ‘X’ that is marked on the grid.
What better way to train your brain. Starting at the left with the number provided, work across each of these lines applying the mathematical instructions to your running total. Don´t reach for the calculator - that´s cheating! Write your final answer in the last box of the line. Aim to complete each round in about 30 seconds. Good Luck! Beginner

Llagostera 2 CD Tenerife 0 THIS was not the way Alvaro Cervera wanted to mark his 100th match in charge of Tenerife. His players went into the match on a good little run, tails up and ready for a winter promotion charge.
They left the mainland with more injuries, a joke of a performance and moral lower than a snake’s belly. It really couldn’t have got any worse for Tenerife. The hosts are woefully out of their depth in this league, and even though they are full of honest hard-workers, they are in way over their head. But if a scout were passing and caught the match, he would have thought the home side were the players in white. Two decent free-kicks from livewire Pitu aside, Llagostera stole three points against a Tenerife side who keep letting their fans down.
On a freezing cold night in north-east Spain, on a farm-standard pitch, the Tenerife players simply didn’t fancy it. This was largely the side who performed heroically at Real Zaragoza a fortnight ago. Or was it? There is an old boxing joke that goes like this. When Ricky Hatton was in his prime he would walk around at 14 stone (sorry Ricky!) and then miraculously waste down to 10st a day before his fight. The gag was that 10 minutes before the weigh in, Ricky’s identical twin would be unchained from the dungeon and step on the scales, before returning to his pit with a bucket of fish heads. Maybe the Tenerife coaching team took the wrong twins because the team who played in Llagostera were like a bunch of trial-match strangers. There was no fusion, no fluidity, no killer balls, no crosses. Nothing! And if you thought Aridane was bad last week... And there are no excuses. Yes, Tenerife were without Vitolo and Aitor Sanz, but Quique and Ricardo were about the best players for CDT in central midfield. Keeper Roberto’s injury didn’t affect the scoreline.

see a few minutes later. The Mexican has struggled, and he will have to wait for Diego Ifran in attack. And, of course, while Uli was on his way to the bath, Ifran gave him the chance which he cannot take. At the whistle, Tenerife were well beaten, but Ifran wanted to have it out with the ref. He claimed the two free-kicks from which Llagostera scored were never fouls. They were. The ref soaked up all the abuse and, when Ifran used the F word, he rightly showed him the red card. And that is a four-game ban. So this weekend, TenPoints PLD Won Draw Lost F A erife host bang-in-form Mallorca without a sen26 13 7 5 1 22 10 ior goalkeeper. But I’m not sure Roberto would have saved either one. If the wall had jumped, the ball would have been cleared. Simples. Even at two down, there was no up-and-atem response. Uli Davila is looking less and less interested. His stupid sending-off at the death was pure petulance, and the irony would be there for all non-Americans to

two senior keepers already this season. Ivan Crespo lasted a matter of hours, while Jacobo was rightly kicked out last week after picking on 16-year-old Cristo Gonzalez. To lose one keeper is bad luck, but two? So Carlos Abad will make his home debut, and the first fan into the Heliodoro with some gloves will be on the bench. Also missing is the still-injured Aitor Sanz, along with the aforementioned strikers Ifran and Davila, while Maxi Perez is struggling to be fit. After Ruso Garcia was released and, of course, Jacobo, the squad is now paper thin. The loaning-out of some of the younger talent was understandable, but right now it looks a rick. Against Llagostera, there were three B
team players on the bench - and there could be four or maybe five tomorrow (Saturday). Cervera has no option but to start with Aridane up front with, probably, Cristo Martin playing the No.10 role. This should see Iker wide left with Suso right, and Vitolo and Ricardo sitting in central midfield. But that leaves only Quique to turn to from the bench, and with no experience to come in the attacking roles. It seems all doom and gloom and tough matches, with Lugo and Alcorcon are on the horizon. Finally this week, a quick mention for CD Marino who are going great guns in the fourth tier. Last weekend they drew 0-0 at home to Tenerife B, but they should have won. They had the chances. And on Wednesday they beat then secondplaced Lanzarote 1-0. Good young centreback Roberto Eslava’s header was enough to take all three points. But they were good value for it, even if a late Lanzarote rally saw them hit the bar in the dying seconds. Marino have been boosted by the signing of Sergio Aragoneses, and the CD Tenerife legend has helped shore up the back end. Unfortunately, he was injured in the warm-up, but replacement Alberto had a steady game. I’ve a feeling CD Marino will slip away from the chasing pack, and this could be a promotion season for the Las Americas lads.

Tension, drama and Ron Miel! THIS has been a difficult season for the darts league, to say the least, having lost six teams since we began in May.
But that certainly hasn’t dampened the competitive spirit, as last Friday’s results in Division 1 showed. The four matches played all ended 5-3 and all went down to the last leg. Tension and drama all the way! Trap Door could have claimed top spot with an 8-0 win, but opponents Clouseaus were having none of it. They pushed the spider men all the way, only to be pipped on the trebles leg.
Emerald Shamrocks remain top, although they had a right old ding-dong with Chipeque, who just fell at the final hurdle. The Playboys also had to win the last rubber to beat Naughty Nautas, while Emerald Lounge narrowly got the better of Sundowners. So where does Ron Miel come into it? Well, all we know is that Spear Chuckers’ Dick spent the evening in the company of Ron. After that, his darts flew as sweet as honey, and he fired in his second 180. I guess he was really buzzing! But that didn’t deter Division 2 opponents Palms Sports Bar, who won the match 5-3. Also on the maxi-
mum trail was Phoenix Flights’ Paul ‘Topgun’ Messent. His first of the season came during a 6-2 defeat at Waterfall Warriors, a result which extended the Warriors lead at the top slightly to 12 points. Chipeque Chippers will play the leaders in January in what could be a decisive show-
down. For the time being, though, the Chippers will be happy with second place into which they moved after beating The Palms. And they do have a game in hand. Elsewhere, Ourplace Playgirls picked up just the single point as they took a bit of a beating at The Rebels.
Without having played for a month, Premier League champions Bar 180 A dusted off the cobwebs to take on stablemates Bar 180 B. Plenty of banter ensued as dad Richard played son Beck. Credit to the youngster, though, as he took two legs off his old man. A 6-2 win for the A string,

then, plus a maximum for Wayne and two for Andy. And they even have a game this week! Another in-house derby, at Target Bar, produced a 6-2 success for the army. They now sit just a point behind Phoenix Bar, with a game in hand. And with three games in hand, The Pub are still in with a shout, picking up a useful six-point haul at Boothen. A closely-fought contest unfolded at Vikings Ensecan as they entertained Gaffers B. The Vikings’ home record shows that it’s a difficult place to go, so kudos to the Gaffers gang who let their darts do the talking, and held on for a 4-4 draw.

Burnley make mark at last THE International break will give one or two managers the opportunity to play wildcards in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League before they lose too much ground. It also means that injury lists can be shortened and players rested, ready to come back fresh and raring to go. On the negative side, it means a pretty boring weekend ahead! The point-scoring team of the week reflects Burnley’s first win
and Newcastle’s current run of form, with both teams providing two players apiece. The rest of the team consisted of a player each from Everton, Man Utd, Liverpool, Spurs, Sunderland, Man City and Southampton. Warren Wilson and his Cross Fire Hurricanes did enough to remain at the top, but Frank Devaney and his Toffees came charging into second spot, just seven points adrift after a great week, assisted by Aguero and
Chadli on the points front. They were not team of the week, though. That honour went to Andrew Titley and his Stocks 25 team with 88 points. He had Aguero and Chadli as well, and also in form were Baines and Sigurdsson. The managers are starting to bunch up and it will be tough for sides to sneak away from the pack. We are at the stage of the season where a lot of the teams are looking very similar. It will be
interesting to see how the use of the captain’s armband affects matters, and also how many managers will stray from the flock. Wayne Rooney is set to return to action, so will managers dump Aguero or Costa to make space? Also, strikers who looked cheap a few weeks ago, now look like dead weight. I’m thinking Leicester’s Ulloa as an example. And what of the hot strikers? Will we see Ayoze being snapped
up, or maybe Long at Southampton? Also, it’s about time Aston Villa hit the net, and
maybe they will provide a cheap points option when the action is back next weekend.

Gaffers roll over champs! THE Direct Telecom Pool League saw its own version of Clash of the Titans in Division One on Tuesday.
Reigning champions Tenerife Hammers A travelled to take on runners-up Gaffers A, with both sides eagerly awaiting the match for weeks. Gaffers had the slight advantage of being league leaders, with home advantage, but could they make it pay? The early frames are always crucial, and both sides normally start with their best two players. Ash put down an early marker as he beat Jambo to take the first frame, but new Hammers’ captain Paul brought his team level instantly by beating Neil. Lee got the better of a tight tussle with Wez, and, when Kev beat Fritzel, the Gaffers lads were on the front foot at 3-1. This was swiftly 4-1 as Ash chinned Jambo for the second time - and when Neil got revenge on Paul, the alarm bells were going off for Hammers. The 5-1 scoreline then became 6-1 as Kev accounted for Wez and a real, erm, hammering was on the cards. The frames were close and maybe on another night the Hammers might have sneaked a few. Fritzel did give them hope to make it 6-2 with a win over Dave, but the joy was short-lived. Ash completed his hat-trick of wins to get Gaffers to the magical sevenframe mark, and score a mighty blow for the season. Paul and Jambo did win a couple of dead rubbers to give the match a respectable looking 8-4 scoreline, but the night belonged to Gaffers A. It was all change again in the chasing pack,
with The Phoenix moving back up to third spot. They were playing Dreamers A, who were confident after a good win last week. But that confidence didn’t last long as Harry and his team moved through the gears with ease and on to an 8-4 victory. Treehouse A climbed up to fourth as they continued their winning streak. Exiles A were the opponents, and they nicked a few frames. but the win was never in doubt for the Chayofa team. Inn the Pink A also moved up a place into fifth, but they’ll be disappointed because they could have gone third. To do that, though, they needed a win at Exiles B, but Blair and his boys were in resilient mood. Pink A ran into a Stuart-and-Kyle wall, the boys winning five frames between them to earn a decent point for the hosts. With all these teams on the up, it left Phoenix Potters slipping back. The Werther’s Originals are going through a poor patch. Their game at Waterfall Rebels had a little grudge element to it, but the match was played out in good spirits. Waterfall have not been getting the results many expected this season, but it all clicked on Tuesday and they were soon 5-0 up. Potters fought back to 6-5 and could have rescued a draw in the final frame. But Sheepy benefited from a large stroke of luck and Waterfall welcomed the three points. Terrace Bar B, enjoying life back in the top flight, put another three points on the board after another solid performance against Palms Bar B. Finn and the fella’s who are flying at the minute, are certainly enjoying giving the Ter-

They edged out Palms B 7-5, while their so-called “A team” lost again. Palms A were the opponents for Terrace Bar A, but even with motormouth Mal being gifted a frame, they never troubled Palms A. The match finished 9-3, which was the same scoreline that saw Peacocks home against Tenerife Hammers C. Peacocks are improving nicely and I expect them to fly up the table. They always had the Hammers in a flap and had their tails up from the start. Tony and his team could just not get going and, egged on by their fans, Peacocks “blue” the Hammers away. In Division Two, Sporting Jester A returned to the top of the league
after playing two games this week. On Monday, they played a catch-up game against Picasso’s A. But their little break from the table hadn’t dulled their abilities, and they came away with a comfortable 10-2 win, maintaining their 100% record. However that was about to change. They

travelled across the road on Tuesday to face Inn the Pink B in a match that had a fair bit of spice to it. Pink B, who have been playing well this season, forced a tight game. Liam won three times against Gareth, and this fine effort was good enough to earn his Pink side a point. It wasn’t the best night of pool ever played, but Pink have, at least, taken the Jesters’ perfect record. Sporting Jester B were still awaiting their first win of the season, and this week’s opponents were Treehouse B, who themselves could certainly benefit
from a few more points. It was another close affair and the teams had a really good battle. But Lady Luck favoured the Jesters, who did just enough to claim their first three points. Well done lads! Two teams with promotion aspirations squared up, with Gaffers B against James Place looking a good fixture on paper. It turned into a really cagey affair with neither team wanting to give anything away. All the games were tight and it seemed apt that it would end with honours even, The final match was a strange one in Torviscas. Waterfall Jokers travelled to Picasso’s and were 3-1 down early on. They must have felt like staying at home on the Golf! But after a quick drink, the visitors roared back in the mid-section to take all four frames. And just when they sniffed success at 5-3, they fell apart! Picasso’s took the next two frames, Andy did Tony to give Jokers the lead again, only for Steve to beat Jonesy and claim a draw. What a match!

By Adi Benson It feels good to be back writing the Premier League preview after another round of international games.
Most of the home nations will be delighted with the way the last week has gone, well maybe Scotland supporters are still smarting from the England defeat! This weeks Beat Benson challenger is quite the canny predictor. Recently he won one of the pooled results contests held in Los Cristianos. But I’m confident of doing my fellow Oasis Fm DJ Sid aka Darren Clarke. Man City v Swansea It must be frustrating being a City fan because you never know which team will turn up. It’s fair to say that QPR battered them in their last league game and if it weren’t for the brilliance of Sergio Aguero, they wouldn’t have come away with a point. City simply must do better. Buoyant Swansea are in fifth spot, which is a great achievement given Garry Monk’s lack of experience as a manager. Last time out, they achieved an excellent win against Arsenal, and they will be confident of a repeat performance. My Prediction: Home Win Beat Benson: Draw Leicester v Sunderland After a positive start, Leicester have now gone backwards and find themselves in the relegation zone. A lack of goals is costing them and it seems that the £10m gamble on Ulloa has backfired because his early form and goals have dried up. If they are to have a chance, these are the games they need to win. Sunderland, who have been picking up points recently, have started to show a little potential. More importantly they are putting space between themselves and the bottom three. They have some skilful
55 CW
City look to bounce back
players and are starting to gel as a team. A couple of additions in January and they could push for a top-10 finish. My Prediction: Home Win Beat Benson: Home Win Chelsea v West Brom The Chelsea machine just rumbles on, and the league now is theirs to lose. Mourinho doesn’t think they will go through the season unbeaten, but right now it is hard to see who are capable of ending their run. If anything it will be complacency, and they will beat themselves. West Brom were easily beaten by Newcastle in their last game and they will need a massive improvement here. If they play well but, more importantly, defend well, a point would be a good result. You get the feeling they will try to park the bus - but to beat Chelsea, you need to attack! My Prediction: Home Win Beat Benson: Home Win Newcastle v QPR Newcastle are enjoying a real purple patch and have put together a good run of wins. Technically, they are a good side and are playing for each other, which is paying dividends. QPR have had a couple of good performances recently against the bigger teams, and have been a little unlucky not taking more points. But a draw against City, when they were the better team, will have given them confidence.
They will fancy this game and cause Newcastle problems, Charlie Austin will be the key again! My Prediction: Away Win Beat Benson: Home Win Everton v West Ham Everton have been a little hit-and-miss this season and are yet to put a decent run of results together. But they have been picking up points and have a decent enough league position. They spent big on Lukaku in the summer and he needs to start repaying some of that transfer fee. West Ham are still sitting in fourth spot, but for how long? They struggled against a resilient Villa side, and the worry is that teams have now worked out to play them. Andy Carroll coming back from injury could play a big part in
the next few games. My Prediction: Draw Beat Benson: Away Win Stoke v Burnley Stoke, who have moved into the top 10, picked up a good three points against Spurs, but they are another team who just can’t get a decent run going. They will be happy with their form and will view this as one they can win. I think we will see the bullying Stoke in this one, and it should be enough to take the points. That said, Burnley recorded their first win of the season in their last game against Hull, and they will have the bit between their teeth. Depending on other results, a win could lift them out of the bottom three. But they still need to score goals. My Prediction: Home Win
Beat Benson: Home Win Arsenal v Man Utd Arsenal, a place and a point above United, will want to increase that gap. But that very much depends on which team turns up. In recent weeks, Alexis Sanchez has been carrying the team on his shoulders, so it is time for the rest of the squad to step up to the plate. The big question for the weekend is whether United can even field a team! They were already down to the bare bones in terms of defenders, but keeper De Gea has dislocated a finger, and Daley Blind could also be out for a long spell with a knee injury. Now, where did I leave my boots? My Prediction: Home Win Beat Benson: Away Win Crystal Palace v Liverpool Palace effectively ended Liverpool’s title hopes last season after coming back from three goals behind, and they will be looking to pour more misery on the Reds. They played well against Man Utd and will fancy a repeat performance if they can defend well. They know Liverpool struggle against counterattacking football. Sturridge has picked up another injury, which is a mighty blow for Liverpool. It means they will have to continue giving game time to
Mario Ballotelli. It is about time he produced a performance of which he is capable, and a team like Palace give him the opportunity. If he can start scoring goals, Liverpool may just move in the right direction. My Prediction: Away Win Beat Benson: Draw Hull v Spurs So Hull became the first team to lose to Burnley. It’s not really a tag you want, and they will be looking to make amends. But they are another team who are struggling to score goals and if this doesn’t improve, it could be a long season for them. For Hull, home form was always the key. But they haven’t been defending well and it’s costing them. Spurs are also another team struggling in the league and, without wishing to sound like a broken record; it is again a lack of goals causing the issue. Soldado just isn’t cutting the mustard in the Premier League, I wonder if Defoe will be back in January! My Prediction: Draw Beat Benson: Home Win Aston Villa v Southampton You can tell Villa are offform because I haven’t seen my friend walking round Amarilla Golf dressed in his full kit for a while! After a bright start, they have plummeted like a rock and are now caught up in the relegation battle. They bought in ageing players to balance against their younger players and it hasn’t worked. Roy Keane needs to get some fight in them. Meanwhile, the Saints just go from strength to strength and are certainly worthy of their second spot. I am not sure they will remain in the top four, though, as they have some of the big teams to play. But a European spot will be theirs next season, even if it’s the Europa League. My Prediction: Away Win Beat Benson: Away Win
