TENERIFE UNITES AGAINST ABUSE LAST Tuesday saw the world unite behind the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. And Tenerife marked the occasion in some style.
All the town halls and local government leaders urged action against domestic violence, during a plethora of speeches and awareness workshops. The UN designates 25th November for the annual event as it marks the day in 1960, when three sisters were murdered in Dominican Republic on the orders of dictator Rafael Trujillo. Adeje Mayor Jose Miguel Rodríguez Fraga joined school students in the town’s Plaza España to reiterate his and the council’s total rejection of gender violence - and to pledge help for anyone who requests it. “We continue along the path of working to create an awareness of equality, of peaceful co-existence and respect,” he said. “These are the pillars upon which we can build a harmonious society, rich in human values, and happy. “We are in this fight, and we will move ahead. And we must also fight to make sure there are no cuts in services in this area.” The Mayor was joined
by members of the council and students and staff of the borough’s schools, as well as members of the public. Two students from one of Adeje’s secondary schools read a manifesto rejecting violence. “We have to change this society; we cannot stand idly by when there are human beings suffering at the hands of others because of their gender,” they said. “We cannot justify such actions by simply saying, ‘it’s always been that way’”. They spoke directly to women who have been abused, saying, “We want to send you our support, our strength. No one has the right to hurt you you don’t deserve this because you are fighters and own your own destiny. No more abuse; no more cries for help.” Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, and
other councillors from across the political spectrum, observed a minute’s silence at the doors of City Hall. Afterwards, during a meeting at City Hall, the Governing Council of the Town Planning Department approved a manifesto for commemorating the day. The manifesto, read by First Deputy Mayor José Ángel Martín, said: “The management is committed to fight against gender violence and be a defender of victims; we will support and protect the victims and their children, and we denounce the aggressors. “We will raise awareness of the need to combat this scourge, leaving behind centuries of oppression and complicit silence.” As well as the matter being raised in local government, pres-
sure groups held various screenings and workshops to highlight the problem. A sample of short films were shown, there was a music therapy workshop, story-telling for children and a monologue by actress Carmen Cabeza. In Arona, Mayor Francisco José Niño gave a speech before authorities and borough workers, describing “a manifesto of rejection of violence”. He added: “We must raise awareness on one of the most serious social problems of all time - male violence in all its forms: sexual, economic, physical, psychological, and trafficking in women, and female genital mutilation, among other crimes.” In a hard-hitting announcement, Mayor Niño stressed: “According to statistics released by the Ministry of Health, Equality and Social Services’ official Government figures in Spain, so far this year, 45 women have been killed by their partners or former partners, and more than 20 children have been orphaned. “This data demands that we reflect, because the violence is not a private issue. It not only affects women; it affects the whole society and, therefore, we express our strongest condemnation and strongly condemn any form of violence, especially gender violence.” Granadilla Mayor Jaime González Cejas
gave a similar address, showing his revulsion for violence against women. And he promised to continue implementing equality policies in the municipality. “In Granadilla de Abona, we pledge to continue implementing measures and efforts in the prevention and detection of this kind of macho conduct,” he added. “Being put at risk, just because you are a women, is wrong. Male violence against women must stop. The government must reverse the cuts in money given to prevention campaigns and awareness. “In addition, we speak out against the aggressors and we care and support victims - women and children who suffer such inequalities daily.” The figures in Spain 45 women already killed this year - are horrendous. Many attacks go unreported and the number is just as frightening in the UK. Three women are killed every week by a current or former partner, and more than one-third of women will be abused, sexually or physically, in their lifetimes. Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, said sexual and gender-based violence was the “most extreme form of global and systemic equality experienced”. He added: “It knows no geographic, socioeconomic or cultural boundaries. Worldwide, one in three women will
suffer physical or sexual violence at some point in her life, from rape and domestic violence to harassment at work and bullying on the internet. “Everyone has a responsibility to prevent and end violence against women and girls, starting by challenging the culture of discrimination that allows it to continue. “We must shatter negative gender stereotypes and attitudes, introduce and implement laws to prevent and end discrimination and exploitation, and stand up to abusive behaviour whenever we see it.” Some of UN statistics are jaw-dropping: *35% of women and girls globally experience some form of physical and or sexual violence in their lifetime, with up to seven in 10 women facing this abuse in some countries. *It is estimated that up to 30 million girls under the age of 15 remain at risk from FGM (Female Genital Mutilation), and more than 130 million girls and women worldwide have undergone the procedure. *Globally, more than 700 million women alive today were married as children, 250 million of whom were married before the age of 15. *Girls who marry before the age of 18 are less likely to complete their education, and more likely to experience domestic violence and complications in childbirth.

New police deal to benefit everybody SPAIN’S national police force have been given what appears to be a superb new deal, improving their working and living conditions and, thus, giving the country a more professional force.
Home Affairs Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz said the National Police Force would be renamed the National Police. He added that the new Personnel Act legislation “will establish the rights and obligations of national police officers, grant them more rights, give them better training and improve their legal and social protection. He added: “It will also enable our citizens to have an even more professional police force, if
that is possible, which is better trained, closer to its citizens and more open to society.” Fernández Díaz said Spain headed up the list of the safest countries in the European Union, thanks to the civic responsibility of its citizens and the professionalism of its law enforcement agencies.
He also pointed out that surveys, conducted by the Sociological Investigation Centre (CIS) “clearly show that the National Police and the Guardia Civil are among the most valued institutions by the Spanish people”. Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, Vice-President of the Govern-
ment, said the Council of Ministers had approved a Draft Constitutional Law on National Police Force Personnel “that seeks to unify and update the statutory regime to a single piece of legislation”. The new legislation also offers two fundamental guarantees to female police officers,
who have been victims of gender-based violence: unpaid leave or the possibility of taking up a new job position of a similar nature in another location without there necessarily existing a vacancy that needs covering. Also, protection for national police officers will be strengthened because the new law incorporates a civil liability insurance policy, or another form of financial guarantee, to cover compensation and bonds deriving from their performances. Regarding social protection, the Home Affairs Minister said the public administration will be obliged to take out an accident insurance policy - since 1973 this was ex-gratia - in the event of death or total or partial permanent incapacity suffered by national police officers in the performance of their duties.
The future legislation decrees that the method for joining the police force will still be through an open, competitive exam, but increases the level of the qualifications required. The Minister said that a high-school diploma will be required to join up to the Basic Scale, and a university degree to join up to the Executive Scale. The level required for internal promotions has also been raised, although a transitional period of five years has been set. The Home Affairs Minister clarified that “these qualifications are for incoming police officers”. Jorge Fernández Díaz highlighted that the legislation provides for the possibility of career public servants from the police forces of the autonomous regions and local authorities signing up to the National Police.
Teachers working in fear of students TEACHING has never been an easy job and now, it seems, it’s almost impossible as more and more teachers are living in fear.
Attacks by parents and students is rising at an alarming rate in the Canary Islands. And the latest figures, released this week, show the number of reported attacks has risen to 150 in the first nine months of this year nearly the same total as for the whole of 2013. The ANPE union warns that its teachers need better protection before the situation gets much worse. The report, by ‘El De-
fensor del Profesor en Canarias’ (The Canary Islands Ombudsman), leaves no doubt that teachers are increasingly assaulted by students or parents in unprovoked attacks. Last year, 157 teachers were physically attacked in the Canary Islands, and this figure was 14 higher than in 2012. But when com-
pared with 2008, when there were 97 assaults, it’s easy to see why the union is so concerned. And these are just the reported attacks! According to Maria Teresa Santos, the union’s legal advisor, one reason for the increase is “the failure of proper regulation. This leaves teachers virtually defenceless.” She added: “The law has established protective measures to ensure the safety of the teaching profession, as recognised by the public authorities. “This includes the Canarian Education Act, but that is not helping the real needs of teachers. They need proper protection and, if an offence occurs, then people need to be dealt with
properly.” For his part, union co-ordinator Domingo Rodriguez said: “Since 2008, more than 700 colleagues have asked for help, and this is the tip of the iceberg. So you can only imagine how accurate the official figures are. “The cases that come to us are from absolutely desperate people, who can no longer take it. But there are many teachers who work with fear and anxiety. “And then there are those for whom it is literally impossible to continue working in this situation.” Rodriguez highlighted the case of a 10-year-old pupil, who ran amok in a classroom, breaking furniture, desks, assaulting classmates and then attacking the teacher.
When the father arrived at the school and was told of the incident, recalled Rodriguez: “He goes straight up to the child, hugs him and tells him that everything is okay! “What do you do with a case like this, where the child is being told it is acceptable to destroy the furniture? To attack his fellow pupils? “Should we call the police to arrest a child of that age? It’s these incidents that make some teachers so desperate.” Unsurprisingly, the problems get worst as the children get older. And 43% of cases are in senior school which, says the ANPE, is linked to increased age ratios. Rodgriguez said: “We live in a world of 25 or 30
adolescents in one class with a teacher, and that makes the situation uncontrollable. “It is unlikely that the situation will improve in the short-term because schools are a reflection of the troubled and conflicting problems our society is having since the financial crisis. “And while that does not change, things will stay the same.” The union also underlines that one of the main factors affecting school life is the successive budget cuts over the past two years. This, when added to the increasing number of broken families and “the crisis of values and morals”, has led to more problems in the classroom, and violence towards authority.”

Beheaded grandma’s daughters might sue THE daughters of a grandma beheaded in Tenerife by a paranoid schizophrenic are considering taking legal action against a North Wales psychiatric unit.
Samantha and Sarah Mills-Westley are furious that Betsi Cadwaladr chiefs did not discipline the consultant who failed to recognise that the man who murdered their mother, Jennifer, had a serious mental illness. They said their mum “would be alive today” had staff at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd’s Ablett Unit recognised 30-year-old Dayan Deyanov’s condition. The homeless Bulgarian launched a frenzied knife attack on 60-year-
old Mrs Mills-Westley in Los Cristianos in May 2011, just seven months after his release from the Bodelwydda psychiatric unit. He was sentenced last February to 20 years in a secure psychiatric unit in Seville after being convicted of murder by a jury. A damning report by Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) said that without “clear shortcomings” in his care, Deyanov might not have murdered Mrs Mills-Westley. Samantha and Sarah criticised Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board heavily for “obstructing our pleas for truth and for continuing to prolong our pain”. The Board eventually apologised to Mrs MillsWestley’s family and said it was determined to improve its proce-
dures. Executive Medical Director Professor Matt Makin, was asked if the unnamed consultant, who had wrongly diagnosed that Deyanov was “malingering” (feigning the illness), had been disciplined. He replied: “Having reflected on this report, there are no grounds to take disciplinary action against the consultant. “There has been a serious, untoward incident
review of mental health services in North Wales, in general, and the consultant involved, in particular, has had the opportunity to reflect and learn from its outcomes and conclusions.” Prof Makin added: “This is a deeply distressing tragedy for the family of the victim, and there have been changes as a result of what has happened. Mental illness is a complex is-
sue, and diagnosis is not always straightforward. “We cannot say with certainty whether the treatment provided influenced his actions seven months later in Tenerife. “We have had a faceto-face meeting with the family, and we intend to meet again following some further work.” But an anguished Sarah Mills-Westley is far from satisfied. “Legal
action is something we are considering, and we need to take advice,” she said. “Some of the families represented by the Hundred Families charity (supporting families who have lost loved ones after killings by people with mental illness) have taken legal action. “I would like to understand what Betsi are doing about it. If we don’t get anything from them, we will take it up with the General Medical Council and let them investigate further. “Sadly, we haven’t heard anything from the health board at all. I really didn’t expect much because of the way we were treated before. Everything is as it was.” Her partner, Brian Moore, added: “Is Betsi saying to the consultant, ‘Go away and reflect’?”

Canaries’ emphatic No to search for oil THE Canary Islands Government has ascertained, via a survey, that 75% of inhabitants oppose offshore oil prospecting in the area.
Drilling has been underway in waters off Lanzarote and Fuerteventura since last Tuesday, after Spanish oil company Repsol was given the go-ahead by Central Government to search for oil there. A Greenpeace activist was injured in a skirmish last week between vessels belonging to the environmental group and the Spanish Navy. The regional government has also been a vocal opponent of the exploration project, alleging that it poses potentially- devastating ecological risks in
an area which lives off tourism. The survey, which sought the opinion of 2,772 Canary Islands’
residents, serves as a mock referendum following the Constitutional Court’s decision to suspend the regional
authorities’ attempt to conduct a direct, binding vote, echoing the Catalan referendum case.
According to the 10-question poll, three out of four Canarian residents oppose oil exploration on or near
the islands, supporting sustainable tourism instead. Repsol’s initiative attracted just 15% support, with the rest of respondents failing to express an opinion. The results have led regional Premier Paulino Rivero, of the Canaries Coalition, to insist that Madrid is ignoring the will of Canarians. Rivero warned that if local sentiment were not taken into account, people would “rebel”. He feels that the issue symbolises “a head-on collision between the interests of a multinational and the interests of the Canarian people”, rather than a confrontation between the general interests of Spain and those of the Canary Islands. And he warned about the potential damage to the tourism sector as a result of “a multinational’s greed in connivance with the central government.”
Oil prices put the skids under Russia RUSSIA has been left counting the cost of the falling oil price - up to $100bn a year, with Western sanctions hitting the country for $40bn.
Finance Minister Anton Siluanov spelled it out during Monday’s international financial and economic forum in Moscow. It means that Russia could be forced to cut its oil production by about 300,000 barrels a day in an attempt to support falling prices. Russian President Vladimir Putin says the country could suffer “catastrophic consequences” from sanc-
tions, the falling oil price and the sliding rouble. He also claimed they would have knock-on effects for other countries.
“The modern world is inter-dependent,” he told official news agency TASS. “It’s far from guaranteed that sanctions, the steep fall in oil prices and the loss
of value of the national currency will lead to negative results or catastrophic consequences only - for us.” The European Union and the United States imposed sanctions on Russia following its annexation of the Crimea region in Ukraine, and its alleged involvement in eastern Ukraine. Some members of the Opec oil cartel may decide to cut production to support prices. Iran, Libya and Venezuela have urged other Opec members to support oil prices by reducing output, although Kuwait says a cut is unlikely. The oil price has been falling since the summer because of an abundant global sup-
ply, partly through the US shale boom, and lower demand in Europe and Asia. Brent crude has fallen by more than a third and hit a four-year low of $76.76 a barrel on 14th November. Daniel Bathe, of Lupus alpha Investment, said: “The market would question the credibility of Opec and its influence on global oil markets if there were no cut.” Saudi Arabia, Opec’s biggest producer and exporter, has sent mixed messages about a possible cut. Olivier Jakob, a Petromatrix analyst, said the Saudis could be influenced by the conclusion of talks about Iran’s nuclear programme in Vienna,
which are being extended until next summer. Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said last week that Moscow was considering cutting its oil output, although the measure had yet to be agreed. The rouble gained more than 2% against both the US dollar and euro on Monday, helped by the slight recovery in oil prices. But the Russian currency has fallen by almost 30% against the dollar this year. Russia’s central bank had been spending billions in a bid to prop up the rouble, but said earlier this month that it would be limiting its intervention.

Pray for Pele AS we go to print late on Thursday, there is everworsening news surrounding the health of football legend Pele.
The Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo has said the 74-yearold has been moved into the intensive care unit after suffering “clinical instability”. He was admitted on Monday for a urinary condition, just two weeks after an operation for kidney stones. Let’s hope he pulls through. Old-timers will say he was the greatest footballer of all time, and I’m sure there will be many a debate in pubs about this over the weekend. It’s hard to rank sportsmen from different generations. I always think you have to use the “poundfor-pound” boxing adage. This means, in footballing terms, if every player had the same level of fitness, condition and modern technology. So was Pele the greatest? He would certainly be up there, but not for me. I never saw him play, so I can’t really
rank him. Ditto Duncan Edwards. We will never know what he could have achieved. He may not have developed as a player. Also, since he was around preTV, how many actually saw him play a dozen times? There is a good case for George Best. But you don’t get too many non-Man United fans stating his case. Johan Cruyff changed the sport, and then there are the defenders such as Bobby Moore and Billy Wright. Fine players, but surely too slow. Why not a keeper, and the peerless Lev Yasmin? And what of modern greats Christian Rinaldo, Leo Mess and Joey Barton? I’d just, just, put Ronaldo above Messi, but they’ve both been poor at major international championships. Which is why, for me, the greatest is Diego Maradona. His second goal against England in Mexico was the bestever and the way, single-handedly, he won the World Cup with Argentina and the Italian league with Napoli, makes him the finest.

We are not corrupt, says anxious Rajoy SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, responding to the first government casualty in a series of cases of alleged graft, has presented parliament with two anti- corruption laws.
He also appealed to Spaniards yesterday (Thursday) not to view their politicians as corrupt, saying: “I can understand the irritation and distrust of our citizens, but suspicion should not be levelled at everyone.” He added forcefully: “Spain is not corrupt. Most politicians are decent people.” Naturally, Rajoy is anxious to demonstrate that he serious about tackling the problem before elections next year, especially with support drifting away from the two main political parties and newcomer Podemos causing hav-
oc in the opinion polls, rather like Ukip in Britain. His Health Minister, Ana Mato, resigned on Wednesday after an investigating judge accused her of benefiting from a kickback scheme, which has damaged the ruling People’s Party (PP). Mato protested her innocence in her resignation statement, saying she had not been charged with any crime. One of the anti-corruption draft laws presented by the conservative PM covers financing of political parties. The other one is targeting improved transparency and prevention of conflict of interests in Government roles. But these are far from fresh ideas. In fact, they have been stalled in parliament for months as the PP sought consensus with other parties, and to incorporate amendments, before they go to a vote. But Rajoy has received no co-operation from other parties, who believe the ruling par-
ty lacks legitimacy to fight corruption. That’s because an investigation labelled the Gurtel case could end with three former PP treasurers and other party members facing trial. “This case is like a set of Russian dolls,” said Joan Queralt, law professor at the University of Barcelona. “There is always another revelation. Rajoy had no choice but to make Mato resign as she had become a liability to the party.” Mato faces questions from the judge on whether she knew of the provenance of gifts to her family, such as hotel stays, flights and luxury goods. Her ex-husband, a former PP mayor, has been charged with receiving hundreds of thousands of euros in return for public works contracts. Opposition Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez said in parliament yesterday that the PP had been irrevocably tarnished.”You are in no position to regener-
ate Spain against corruption,” he told Rajoy. “You are not able or legitimate to lead.” However, a major beneficiary has been party newcomers Podemos, whose anti-graft ticket has attracted voters disillusioned with both major parties, which have dominated politics since Spain’s return to democracy in the late Seventies. With Spaniards also weary after years of economic crisis under governments led by these parties, Podemos - whose name means “We can” - would come a close third in a parliamentary election, indicated a recent opinion poll. The law on party financing will ban legal and corporate entities from making donations to parties, and banks will no longer be allowed to cancel their debts, or negotiate with them interest rates below market levels. Both bills must now be debated in Spain’s lower house before being passed into law.

At last! Callao Salvaje and Playa Paraíso to be linked
A BRIDGE made of iron and wood is to be built over the barranco to link Callao Salvaje and Playa Paraiso.
And work should be underway this week on the long-awaited connecting path between the villages. At a packed meeting in Callao Salvaje Cultural Centre, Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga joined local councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo and Works Councillor Gonzalo Delgado Diaz, plus the council’s architect, to detail the plans. Also mentioned were other projects in the
pipeline for both neighbourhoods. There was a translator present to facilitate the many non-Spanishborn residents there. The Mayor said: “This meeting has two objectives - to let you know about the works that will begin now to join the two neighbourhoods, and to invite all those present to continue to work together on local initiatives for the area.” He added: “We are aware of the on-going efforts by those who live in these communities to solve local problems. And we are delighted to continue to encourage you to keep us informed, to voice your opinions to help us improve where you live.
“This work will see a historic union of these two neighbourhoods, who have always been united in many ways “The work we are now undertaking comes under the wider umbrella of improving and mod-
ernising the borough in areas where it is needed. “And we hope it meets some of the genuine needs of the area - an area that is very important to our borough.” The project will include regulating the
pathway already existing along the Callao Salvaje cliff-top, with signposting and bins. Upgrading will also take place to remove any danger to pedestrians, as well as improvements to the existing
maritime paths along the Playa Paraíso side, ending along the Calle El Horno. An iron-and-wood bridge is being built over the barranco, with reinforced concrete base, and all the structures have been approved by the national Coastal department. The plans will be available in Adeje Cultural Centre within two weeks for those who wish to see them. Residents of both villages welcomed the news and were also pleased to hear of other plans for the near future in the area, including a park for dogs, and a roadway linking Callao Salvaje and Posto al Sole.

Adeje cheese-makers tasting success again MONTESDEOCA, the Adeje-based dairy, has picked up two more prizes at this year’s World Cheese Awards in London.
The local producers won bronze medals for their smoked goats’ cheese, and cheese aged in wine. Altogether over 2,600 cheeses from 33 countries took part in the competition. Alberto Montesdeoca said the result was “extremely satisfying”, and added: “This year we decided to enter our wine cheese, and we are delighted with the result.” He said the company’s priority was always the production of “a quality product which peo-
ple will recognise for its taste and texture”. Montesdeoca was the only Tenerife dairy to receive an award this year, although there was a significant Spanish presence at a national level. The Adeje company makes various types of cheese, including white fresh, smoked, semicured white, pepper and gofio, cured and the wine-aged. Anyone interested in buying these cheeses can visit the dairy in Tijoco Bajo, just by the road to Llano de las Flores and 50 metres from the petrol station. You can also buy from its stand in the Adeje Farmers’ Market, which is open every Saturday and Sunday, from 8am to 2pm.
Football club chips in to rescue evicted grandma A TOP-FLIGHT Spanish football club have come to the rescue of an 85-year-old grandma, who was evicted from her Madrid home of 50 years last Friday.
And it was hardly Carmen Martínez Ayuso’s fault. Her only son, Luis Jiménez Martínez, used
the property to guarantee a 40,000-euro private loan, without her knowledge, because the bank had turned him down. But players and staff from Rayo Vallecano, the local La Liga side, have committed themselves to paying her rent for the rest of her life, wherever she ends up. “We are not going to sit by and do nothing,” said coach Paco Jémez before his side’s 1-0 home win on Sunday against Celta Vigo. “We are go-
ing to help this woman - not just me, but the technical team and the players. “Within our means, we are going to lend her a hand, so she can find a place to live with dignity and not feel alone.” A distraught Carmen, who was unaware of the eviction or, indeed, the loan, said: “I’ve spent my whole life working, getting up at 6am to earn a crust, and at the last minute they come and take it all when the only thing I want is peace.” She was turfed out of her 160,000-euro property, in the Madrid neighbourhood of Vallecas, because her son, Luis Jiménez Martínez, used it to guarantee the private loan. The family say he wanted the money to do up the house and sort out his financial problems, following a divorce and losing his estateagent job. But he failed to keep up with the repayments. He inherited the deeds to the house when his
father died seven years ago. But his mother did not even know she was facing eviction until the police visited the property, a few days before a first attempt to throw her out was made last month. “I didn’t know anything,” said Martínez Ayuso. “I don’t know how to read or write a signature is enough for me, so I asked my neighbour for help, and that’s when we found out about all this.” The property was an old farmhouse, inhabited by eight families. There were chickens, tractors and an allotment, and it was owned by her husband’s moth-
er. Ten years ago they tore down the old structure and put up the current property. One of the apartments in the building was earmarked for Carmen and her husband, who worked his whole life in the fields under appalling conditions until his death. Although activists from the Vallecas Mortgage Victims Platform (PAH) managed to stop the first eviction a month ago, she lived in fear after that. She trembled every time she saw the police. “They told me it would all be fine, but when you have to talk to a policeman, something’s up,”
she said. She couldn’t sleep the night before the eviction and, when at dawn she saw that they had cordoned off the area, she knew her time there was up. Her grandson, Luismi, is now in charge of looking for a rented apartment for which the Rayo Vallecano squad will pay. On Monday Madrid Mayor Ana Botella said City Hall would offer her access to social housing, though municipal social services said the family had previously rejected its offer of help, saying that with PAH’s help, they would try to stop the eviction and would rent an apartment nearby. But Carmen, who survived the bombing of Vallecas during the Spanish Civil War, does not want to be brought down by an eviction. “All the money the powerful took comes from our toil,” she said. “I have lived a lot of years, but life doesn’t stop waking you up.”

BT dialling up O2 again
TELECOMS giant BT is discussing the purchase of the O2 mobile network from Spanish firm Telefonica.
“All discussions are at a highly-preliminary stage and there can be no certainty that any transaction will occur,” said a BT spokesman. In 2002, BT spun off O2, then called BT Cellnet. Three years later it was acquired by fellow-giants Telefonica for £17.7bn. BT said it had also been approached by the owners of another network, believed to be EE, about a UK buyout. Richard Hunter, head of equities at Hargreaves Lansdown stockbrokers, said it was a sector “ripe for consolidation”. But he added: “I think there would be some kind of irony that they would effectively be buying back a business they previously had.” Its value is around half that paid by Tele-
fonica - Deutsche Bank values O2 UK at £9bn, while UBS values it at £9.6bn. France’s Orange and Germany’s Deutsche Telekom, who own EE, put plans on hold this year for an initial public offering of EE. They said recently that their UK strategies would depend, in part, on how aggressively BT went into mobile. “This could be the moment that commitment to the UK mobile market finally cracks and we see parent companies starting to exit,” said Citigroup analysts in a note, adding that UK profit margins were very low, compared with other markets. A takeover of either O2 or EE would create a communications giant covering fixed-line phones, broadband, mobile and TV. According to Citigroup, EE holds 33.8% of the UK mobile market by revenue, and O2 some 26.2%. BT has about onethird of the home broadband market.
Analysts suggest that customers increasingly want to buy their fixedline and mobile services from one company. Michael Bishop, analyst at RBC Capital Markets, said: “With two operators potentially looking at selling their mobile asset, we believe BT is in the driver’s seat, and the risk of overpaying for a mobile asset is reduced.” BT’s TV channel BT Sport is engaged in a viewership battle with Sky as it tries to lure broadband customers with Premier League broadcasts. And it has also bought the rights to UEFA Champions League games. In a statement to the Spanish stock market, Telefonica, said: “Telefonica informs that, although it is in talks with British Telecom, these talks are in a highly-preliminary phase and there is no certainty that a transaction will take place,” Last year, Telefonica sold a number of assets to reduce debt and improve its credit ratings.

Too old to get a mortgage at 40! IT’S bad enough that mortgages are so difficult to obtain, but new rules mean the over-40s are simply too old to secure loans.
The current British Bankers’ Association figures show that mortgage approvals were 16% lower in October than in the same period last year, against a 10% decrease in September. The figures were released hours after Nationwide reported a £1bn fall in its own gross mortgage lending. These stats add to the fact that the Mortgage Market Review (MMR) regulations, imposed in April, are definitely putting the brakes on borrowing. A report by the Intermediary Mortgage Lenders Association (IMLA) found that many lenders have imposed lower maximum age limits on mortgage because of uncertainty over the rules. It said the strict affordability checks meant that customers over 40, seeking a standard 25-year mortgage, were finding their options restricted because they would have to borrow beyond a normal retirement age of 65. The IMLA said the forthcoming Financial Conduct Authority’s review of MMR’s effects must examine the issue to give banks and other lenders a chance to take
action to avoid an “extinction” of mortgages stretching into retirement. Peter Williams, Its executive director, said: “This issue goes beyond the transitional arrangements for existing borrowers. “And it means that efforts by the lending community to follow the spirit of MMR with new customers are being hampered by the very real concern that it may be cited against them in future. “Uncertain pension incomes make it difficult for lenders to assess mortgage affordability in later life, and this may become even harder when the new pension freedoms take effect next year. “To avoid a situation where regulation brings about the extinction of mortgage terms that stretch into retirement,
we need clarity and confirmation about where the boundaries of responsible lending truly lie.”
Mr Williams added: “MMR has been a big step forward, but having put a strong framework in place for the
future, attention must now focus on honing the template so that the pendulum doesn’t swing too far towards
conservatism.” The report was released as Nationwide, which contributed to the study, confirmed that its mortgage-lending fell in the first half of its financial year. In the six months to 30th September, it said gross mortgage-lending reached £13.1bn, compared with a £14bn total in the same period last year. Net lending tumbled 36% to £3.6bn. The report also said: “We have seen an increase in competitive activity in the first half of this year across most products and services, especially in the mortgage, savings and current-account markets.” Nationwide reported an 83% increase in underlying profits to £606m.
Ex-pharmacist built his own lab for drugs and sold them A RETIRED pharmacist, who built a homemade laboratory for producing amphetamines in a remote village, has been arrested by Spanish police.
In a case with echoes of US television series Breaking Bad, the Civil Guard says it discovered the lab after trailing two small-time drug-dealers in Toro,
a town in Zamora better-known for its winemaking. This led the cops to the Valdefinjas village, a remote rural community of fewer than 100 inhabitants, where the 65-yearold former university lecturer had set up his lab, and from where he distributed drugs throughout northern Spain. “He was making drugs from scratch, using chemical processes and materials that are relatively easy to acquire,”
said a Civil Guard spokesman. Police found sulphuric acid, benzyl alcohol, ammonia, sodium carbonate and other substances, along with sophisticated lab equipment. And after searching 12 other premises, they seized 150gms of amphetamines, t2kg of marijuana and 50gms of hashish, arresting 14 people. The police, describing the home-made lab as “very unusual”, said that most amphetamines seized in Spain
over the last year originated in central Europe, or were produced in Africa, coming into Europe via Spain for domestic consumption, or heading on to the Netherlands. In 2013, Spanish police confiscated more than half-a-million amphetamine tablets, a 121% increase on the previous year. But it doesn’t end there because the authorities say that the use of synthetic drugs such as speed and ketamine is on the rise.

‘Paedo’ priests arrested, and second man points a finger! THREE priests, believed to be paedophiles and members of the ultra-conservative group known as Los Romanones, were arrested on Monday and taken to National Police headquarters.
Father Román V, who, allegedly, ran the group, Francisco JM, who took over from Román at the helm in recent years, and Manuel M, were held, as well as a lay-person. The arrests followed an investigation by a Granada judge into a complaint filed against 10 local priests and two laypeople for paedophilia. The Archbishop of Granada has already removed the priests accused of abuse from their duties. The inquiry was triggered by a letter an alleged victim sent to Pope Francis, who personally telephoned the young man - as he was driving his car - and ordered an internal investigation into the allegations. The “victim”, now 24 and a teacher, allegedly suffered the abuse when he was an altar boy in the Granada parish of Juan María de Vianneimeno. According to his account, Román convinced him, little by little, to leave his family. “Following his advice, I left my parents’ home when I was 17 and I went to live in the parish house with R and two lay-people,” he detailed.
Religion news site Religión Digital believes one of these lay-people, known only by the initials SQ, could have been the fourth person arrested. The young man said he was moved to write his letter to the Pope, in which he describes the sexual abuse he suffered over several years, “because of the possible harm other boys and girls might be suffering”. The letter revealed the existence of a suspected group of priests, all friends, who are alleged to have lured in altar boys under the pretext of imbuing them with religious learning. But that, in reality, is believed to have hidden an underworld of sexual practices. And another one-time
altar boy has strengthened the case against the alleged priests’ paedophile ring by also lodging an official complaint. He was mentioned in the letter to Pope Francis by the first victim, who wrote: “Dear Holy Father: they also abused a friend of mine,” and was stunned while driving along to receive a sympathetic phone call from the Pontiff. Now, the friend has stepped forward to support the claim, with the Pope saying: “The truth cannot be hidden,” The second “victim” of the Romanones, said: “They really insisted on telling me and teaching me that if I didn’t live with them
and went where they told me to go, I would have to leave the group. “They said I would no longer be following the doctrine of God, and they would start telling me about sin.” He added: “All of this has been dramatic, it has marked my life. “I would feel them touching me, and they would tell me not to be afraid. “Sometimes, I saw them kissing each other on the lips when they met, and I thought that this was not natural.” This second testimony against the Granada group reinforces the case, which until now had nothing but the original complaint to go on. A dozen people questioned by the police
said they had not been victims of sexual abuse, and had noticed nothing strange in the suspects’ behaviour. Apart from the four arrests so far, eight more people are under scrutiny for, potentially, acting as silent witnesses to the yearslong abuse. The arrests took place inside a house in Pinos Genil, in the Granada province, owned by the alleged ringleader. A search of the property found that all the files stored on two computers had been deleted. The police took away the hard drives to extract the missing information in search of evidence to back up the plaintiffs’ claims. Sources familiar with the investigation said the computer documents’ wipe-out suggested the suspects “have something to hide”. The Romanones group, named after the founder, owned up to 20 homes, in or near Granada, which are also being investigated by the police now. Pope Francis confirmed to reporters on Tuesday that he had received the letter from an alleged victim, and that he had personally called him back to apologise “in the name of the Church of Christ”. The Pontiff has opened an internal investigation into the allegations to deliver on his promise of zero tolerance for sexual abuse within the Church.

Carnival 2015 Preparations take shape We may still be a few weeks away from Christmas but attention has already turned to next year’s carnival.
This week Santa Cruz mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez visited a number of Carnival groups as preparations stepped
up a level. He “enjoyed” a series of meetings with local groups ‘Klandestinas’, ‘La Traviata’ and ‘Danzarines Canarios’. The three acts have already been busy over the last four months rehearsing their songs and performances, whilst perfecting their jaw-dropping costumes. The mayor’s meetings with the different groups was part
of a more ‘hands-on’ strategy for the next carnival, which will promote local acts, bands and dance groups. The events of the Carnival 2015, which has the theme of ‘The Future’, will begin on Wednesday, 21st January, at the fairgrounds, with the presentation and the draw for the three aspiring Carnival Queens.

Melchior tribute, by CD Tenerife
RICARDO Melchior, former long-serving head of Tenerife Cabildo, was honoured this week by CD Tenerife. The veteran politician was presented with a prestigious gold-and-diamond insignia to mark nearly 60 years of support. Melchior, presented with the medal by CDT President Miguel Concepción, said: “I will not forget this day and this moment. I feel so emotional.” He added: “This is a ‘badge’ I take with pride and honour. The CD Tenerife is Tenerife. It is a part of the Island and, therefore, the Cabildo, which is their govern-
ment, and must always be fully involved.” A glittering arena of senior politicians and local figures were at the gala ceremony, held at the Santa Cruz casino, to pay tribute to Melchior. “For me, it’s very emotional, so I want to thank everyone at the club,” he said. “I never thought I could have done so much in my time as head of the council with the evolution of the ‘Blanquiazul’.” It was a rare public appearance by Melchior who has been enjoying his retirement since he stepped down 15 months ago. He looked well, was clearly
in his element and had the audience in the palm of his hand. Looking at Conception he said: “To have the team in the First Division ... the first division is the goal, and to have been there recently was pleasing. “And we must remember that we are in a golden era in the history of club-trained players, and someone like Ayoze Perez is a prime example. “Even this week we have seen young Carlos in goal, and this shows that Tenerife kids who start training from childhood can go all the way.”

Rioters go to town after cop who shot unarmed teenager escapes charge SEVERAL American cities have witnessed new protests over the decision not to charge the white policeman who killed an unarmed black teenager.
The tragedy unfolded in Ferguson, Missouri, and though demonstrations, from New York to Seattle, over Michael Brown’s death were mainly peaceful, rioting broke out in Oakland, California, on Tuesday. Rioters vandalised police cars and attacked businesses in the centre during a second night of unrest in the port city of 406,000 people. A T-Mobile store was among the companies attacked by rioters, and at one point, a fire started by protesters burnt across four lanes of Oakland’s Telegraph Avenue. Long-standing grievances about Oakland’s police department were, in part, believed to be fuelling the protests there. There was also some unrest in Ferguson itself - police arrested 44 people - but nothing to match the destruction that took place on Monday night, when police struggled to control a crowd of some
2,000 people. Darren Wilson, who shot dead the 18-year-old on 9th August, told ABC News that in the struggle preceding the shooting, he had felt like “a five-yearold holding on to [US wrestler] Hulk Hogan”. The officer said: “The reason I have a clean conscience is because I know I did my job right.” He denied witness statements that Mr Brown had put his hands up, insisting race had played no part in the confrontation. Many in Ferguson’s predominantly AfricanAmerican community had called for the officer to be charged with murder. But the grand jury’s decision means he will not face state criminal charges over the shooting. Lawyers for Mr Brown’s family denounced the decision, saying they “strongly objected” to the way prosecutor Bob McCullough laid out the case, while condemning the violence that followed. St Louis County police chief Jon Belmar said Tuesday had been “generally, a much better night” in Ferguson, a town of 21,000 people. Tear gas was fired just once, he added, when rioters smashed windows at the town hall, and there was just a single report of shoot-
ing, when a car was set alight. Some 2,200 National Guard soldiers were deployed to assist police in keeping order in and around the town. Protests were reported in 12 cities: St Louis itself, as well as Seattle, Albuquerque, New York, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Oakland, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Portland, Chicago and Boston. Demonstrators across the US chanted “hands up, don’t shoot” in reference to some witness statements that said Mr Brown had been raising his hands in surrender
when he was killed. But many protests also referred to police killings in their own city, including a man in New York who died after being placed in a “chokehold” by a police officer. Protesters stopped traffic in central Los Angeles briefly before police moved in to clear them off, while a car ploughed into protesters blocking a road at a rally in Minneapolis, injuring one person. President Barack Obama, who was in Chicago on Tuesday, said there was “no excuse” for de-
structive behaviour and criminal acts of rioting. Accepting that “many communities of colour” had a sense of laws not being enforced “uniformly or fairly”, he said he had ordered Attorney General Eric Holder to look at what steps could be taken to build trust. A federal civil rights investigation is under way into Mr Wilson’s actions, as is a broad federal inquiry into the Ferguson police department, looking for patterns of discrimination. Meanwhile, in Cleve-
land, Ohio, several hundred people marched down an exit ramp and temporarily blocked rush-hour traffic on Tuesday in protest at Saturday’s death of Tamir Rice, a 12-yearold boy shot by a police officer after brandishing a realistic-looking novelty gun. Police, who responded to a 911 call about a gun at a playground, later said Tamir had an airsoft gun which, typically, shoots tiny plastic pellets. But it was missing its orange safety indicator
Volcano erupts again HUNDREDS of residents were evacuated when a volcano erupted in the Cape Verde islands and a local airport had to be closed.
It is the first eruption on the island of Fogo since 1995, and a large plume of smoke, starting on Sunday, was seen rising over the Pico do Fogo volcano.
The Cape Verde Government said civil protection workers and military had been sent to Fogo to help. And there have been no reports of casualties. Officials said the signs were that the eruption was bigger than the last one, 19 years ago. And they have warned that the situation is likely to deteriorate. Some of the displaced families will be housed in accommo-
dation built for those evacuated in 1995. Others will be offered temporary shelter in “ready-made” homes. The area around the volcano is a popular hiking destination for tourists, and it is also used for agriculture, including wine-making. The Cape Verde archipelago, off the coast of West Africa, consists of 10 volcanic islands, eight of which are inhabited.

Terrorists foiled - time after timE BRITISH security services have quashed more than 40 terror plots since the 7/7 bombings in 2005.
Home Secretary Theresa May said the UK faces a “diverse” terror threat - unmatched before or since 9/11 - and that the advance of Islamic State (IS) has given energy and a renewed sense of purpose to home-grown extremists. “The security service believes that since the attacks on 7th July 2005, around 40 terrorist plots have been disrupted,” she said. “There have been attempts to conduct marauding, Mumbaistyle gun attacks on our streets, blow up the London Stock Exchange, bring down airliners, assassinate a British ambassador and murder serving mem-
bers of our armed forces.” She also revealed that counter-terrorism officers had made 753 arrests since May 2010, - resulting in 138 terrorists being jailed and 13 people extradited. Mrs May was speaking as part of an anti-terror drive, which will also
see new powers to force internet companies to hold data that could help identify the owner of a phone or computer. She promised to end the payment of ransoms for terrorist groups by closing a loophole that can allow insurance companies to put forward the money.
It is already illegal for individuals to pay ransoms to groups because it counts as funding terrorism. Now it will also be an offence if insurance companies reimburse people for such payments. The UN estimates that Islamic State has raised £28m through ransoms in the past 12 months, and there are fears the payments encourage more kidnappings. Schools, prisons and councils will be required by law to install measures that would stop individuals from being drawn into terrorism. The Home Secretary said a statutory duty to deter radicalisation would be placed on named organisations and, where they fail, ministers would be able to issue court-backed directions. She said she would like to go further with internet companies, making
them keep information on the websites and social media used by suspects. But the Lib Dems blocked the legislation, dubbed the “snoopers charter”. The new legislation will also strengthen Terrorism Prevention and Investigations Measures (TPims) to re-introduce powers in Labour’s control orders to relocate terror suspects around the country. She said: “This legislation is important. The substance is right. The time is right. And the way in which it has been developed is right. “It is not a knee-jerk response to a sudden, perceived threat. It is a properly-considered, thought-through set of proposals that will help to keep us safe at a time of very significant danger.” Alongside the new measures she announced, police are appealing to the pub-
lic and businesses for help tackling the threat posed by would-be terrorists. Across the country, counter-terror officers have spent this week briefing more than 6,000 people at 80 venues, including schools, universities, airports, shopping centres, cinemas and farms, in a bid to raise terrorism awareness. Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley said: “Police officers and our partners are continuing to work 24 hours a day, seven days a week ,to protect the UK from a terrorist attack. “So far this year, we have disrupted several attack plots and made 271 arrests following counter-terrorism investigations. “But the eyes and ears of law enforcement and other agencies alone cannot combat the threat.”

‘Cowardly Lion’ sells for £2m
A MYSTERY bidder spent nearly $3m (£2m) at auction to secure the Cowardly Lion costume from Judy Garland’s classic film The Wizard Of Oz.
It was worn by Bert Lahr in the 1939 film the most-viewed picture of all time - and sold on Monday at Bonhams, in New York. The costume, made from real lion hide and fur, was discovered over 20 years ago in one of the oldest buildings on the MGM lot.
A spokesman for the costume’s previous owner, James Comisar, said a secondary costume used in the film was sold at auction in recent years for around $1m. At the same auction, the piano on which Sam (Dooley Wilson) plays As Time Goes By to
Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) in Casablanca went for $3.4m (£2.1m). The orange piano featured prominently in the Oscar-winning 1942 romantic drama, with leading man Humphrey Bogart using it as a hiding place for the letters of transit which, ultimately, secured his for-
mer lover’s safe passage to the US. The piano, reckoned to have been made in 1927, has only 58 keys, which is 30 fewer than a classic model. It had been owned by a Los Angeles dentist since the Eighties. Bonham’s said the painted Moroccan de-
signs were restored about three decades ago, under the direction of Warner Bros. Dresses worn by Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland and Rita Hayworth were also auctioned, as well as a jacket worn by Clark Gable in Gone With The Wind.
Women are second-best, Always looking on the insists Turkish President bright side of funerals! WOMEN are unequal to men in Turkey, according to Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the country’s controversial President.
In his latest comment on female rights, he said that putting men and women on an equal footing was “against human nature”. Erdogan told a summit on women and justice in Istanbul, attended by his daughter Sumeyye: “They were created differently. Their nature is different. Their constitution is different. “You cannot get women to do every kind of work men can do, as in Communist regimes. You cannot tell them to go out and dig the soil. This is against their del-
icate nature.” The President said that feminists should, instead, appreciate the special status Islam attributes to mothers, adding: “Our religion has defined a position for women in society - motherhood. “Some people can understand this, while others can’t. You cannot explain this to feminists because they don’t not accept the concept of motherhood. “I would
kiss my mother’s feet because they smelled of paradise. She would glance coyly and cry sometimes. Motherhood is something else.” It is not the first time Erdogan’s comments have raised concerns over his stance on women’s rights in Turkey. The President has declared that every woman there should have three children, and he has proposed limitations on abortion rights and the morning-after pill. In August, he criticised a female journalist, telling her she should “know her place”. Earlier this month, Erdogan also raised eyebrows when he claimed that Muslims arrived in the Americas before Christopher Columbus.
AND now for something completely different! Monty Python’s Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life has become the most popular tune at UK funerals. A chain of funeral directors found in a study that the 1979 Life of Brian song had overtaken Frank Sinatra’s My Way as the preferred choice of music. David Collingwood, of The Co-operative Funeralcare, felt the findings represented “a generational shift in attitudes towards funerals”. He added: “Modern funerals are very much about personal choice. The variety of songs played at funerals today illustrates how more and more people are personalising funerals,
and celebrating their loved one’s life with a fitting farewell.” Monty Python’s irreverent song, which Eric Idle sang at the closing ceremony of London’s 2012 Olympic Games, rose from 13th place three years ago, to become this year’s most popular funeral song. A spokesman asked: “We wonder if it’s the people who were young in the swinging Sixties, who are now in their Seventies and Eighties and if that’s informing this trend? Monty Python, for example, is of a certain age.” Robbie Williams’ 2004 hit Angels also appears on the list of popular funeral tunes - in the top 10, actually. But you can’t beat the old ‘uns, and the hymns
The Lord Is My Shepherd and Abide With Me are the second and thirdmost popular choices. However, more than 84% of funeral directors say hymns or classics are declining in popularity quicker than any other music genre. Popular choices in the top 10 include Queen’s Who Wants To Live Forever, while TV theme tunes, such as Match of the Day, Coronation Street and Only Fools and Horses theme, also made the top 20. But certain songs, which were rejected on the grounds of taste or inappropriate language, included Relax, by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, God Save The Queen, by the Sex Pistols and John Lennon’s Imagine.

THE Spanish Cadastral Office is a data base which includes legal, economic and physical information for real estate properties.
28th November 2014 - 4th December 2014
THE CADASTRAL OFFICE
And the Spanish General Direction of Cadastral Properties is the authority has a complete, inter-operable data model for the whole territory. This registry is different from the Land Registry. The latter is the one in which the plot is defined, stating ownership, charges and other circumstances of the property. The Cadastral Office contains information about the location, area, value, etc, relating to the municipal
situation of the land. For this mission, the Cadastral registry provides a virtual office that gives everybody access to cadastral data via the internet. This access is free, with exemptions connected to the Right of Protection law. The information includes the Cadastral number of the land, area, plan of the property, location, etc, and the information can be printed easily. Through this info, the Town Hall gives a Ca-
dastral value to each property, by which the yearly rates are calculated. When granting a Deed of Purchase, the Notary requires information about the Cadastral reference and has to state that the property is up to date with payment of rates (Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles). This is just a summary of how the Cadastral Office performs, which may help you understand a bit more about it - and how it differs from the Land Registry.
Save money as an expat! By Carol Schleisman
WARM weather, beautiful beaches, colourful villages, charming culture, delicious food and the sparkle of wine as the sun slips below the horizon.
No wonder people don’t want to leave Tenerife! It’s easy to be swept away by the sweet smell of the wine and serrano ham, or the charms of towns when you’re looking for a property. At some point, however, practical considerations will creep in, such as how you’re going to transfer your hardearned money to Spain to seal the deal on your dream home. The world of foreign currency can be strange and confusing. And if you’re making an overseas transfer for the first time, it’s easy to get a bad deal or lose a lot of money without realising it - until it’s too late! You might not know that, if you use your local or high-street bank, you could lose thousands in transfer fees and unfavourable exchange rates. Whether you’re securing a holiday home, making an investment or embarking on a big move, you’ll be better off with an experienced currency transfer specialist.
Companies like Currencies Direct have been helping people transfer funds abroad quickly, simply and cost-effectively for more than 18 years. Whether you’re thinking of living in Spain permanently or popping over to a holiday home, you may find yourself making regular transfers from the UK: paying a mortgage perhaps, transferring your pension or paying your living costs. Look for a regular transfer service, ideal for these types of weekly, monthly or quarterly payments. It’s usually Direct Debit-driven, and the saving on transfer fees is con-
siderable. Today’s rates look good, but what if you don’t need to transfer your money for, say three months? No problem. A forward contract is the currency world’s version of “buy now, pay later”. Just give a small deposit to fix today’s exchange rate and it’s yours for up to a year. When looking for an exchange provider, you want the best rates and great service. You want the right advice, to understand what’s important to you and what you want to achieve. Most importantly, you want to make sure your funds are in safe hands. After all, it’s your money.
Look for an established company with a good credit score, and authorised by the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) for the provision of payment services. Basically, this means the FCA regulate companies heavily, and the quality of service will be higher. Learn about your options There is a service tailored to help you with every type of overseas transfer. Learn to discern which products will work best for you and make your life easier, as well as making your money go further. Use spot contracts for:
*Paying invoices in another country *Moving money quickly across your accounts *Sending money to a friend or family member Use forward contracts for; *Buying property abroad *Big international purchases *Transferring your life savings Use regular transfers for: *Paying your mortgage *Pension transfers overseas *International students’ monthly allowance Use limit orders for: *Maximum benefit when exchange rates move in your favour *Transfers which are
not time sensitive Use rate watch for: *Keeping an eye on the currency markets *Leaving your options open when your target rate is reached *Transfers that are not time sensitive Currency specialists love talking about foreign currency, and they realise that most people don’t. It’s most likely that you just want to move your money and get on with life. Look for a specialist that offers straightforward guidance to help you get what you want. You shouldn’t be baffled by jargon, or hit by any costs. And any money you transfer should be sent quickly.

Christmas is Coming...
Don't Miss...
We’ve had the John Lewis advert, the supermarkets are filled with Quality Street tins and Bob Geldof has gathered together a load of popstars to sing about Africa. There’s no point hiding and denying it, Christmas is very nearly here. Even if you’re a festive grinch, one of the best parts of Christmas is that it means a bumper selection box of great telly. Including: Esio Trot; Another of Roald Dahl’s classics gets adapted for the small screen with the not too shabby casting of Dustin Hoffman and Dame Judi Dench taking the lead roles. Adapted by Richard Curtis, this should be something for the whole family to gather round and watch. Vic and Bob’s House of Fools; Vic and Bob’s venture into the world of sitcoms was just as surreal and bonkers as you would expect and it returns to the BBC this winter for more silliness. As an added bonus, it means we get even more Matt ‘Toast of London’ Berry on our screens, which is always a good thing. John Bishop’s Christmas Show; A Yuletide comedy extravaganza from the always affable Liverpudlian comic, who will be bringing his usual mix of laughs and tales with an added Christmas twist in what is quickly becoming another BBC festive tradition. Mary Berry’s Absolute Christmas Favourites; Christmas cakes, mince pies, chocolate log, trifle, gingerbread. Watch, get seriously hungry and then eat yourself silly.

The Martin Lewis Money Show ITV1, 20.00 Fighting to get the most from your money - The Martin Lewis Money Show returns for a new series just in time to help save cash at Christmas. The series kicks off on Black Friday - the date marking the beginning of the Christmas shopping season - and Martin lists all the essential deals which start then. Martin also unveils his Festive Forecaster - predicting the start dates for high street flash sales in the run up to Christmas. In Hertfordshire, one family lets Martin and reporter Saira Khan into their home for a personal stock-take of all their belongings to help them raise money to pay for Christmas. Walking Through History Channel 4, 20:00
Tony Robinson hikes up from Lyme Regis on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast to the Somerset Levels in the footsteps of a ragtag rebel army led by the dashing young Duke of Monmouth, the illegitimate son of Charles II. He sailed in from Holland round Lyme’s famous Cobb with a handful of soldiers. He believed that the people would support him in overthrowing the newly crowned James II, who was also Monmouth’s uncle, but, more importantly, Roman Catholic. The year was 1685 and the country was riven by anti-Catholic feeling mixed up with a strong dash of revolutionary zeal. Monmouth marched through the fiercely independent towns of Devon, gathering support from artisans and farmworkers. Meeting up with Billy Bragg in Colyton, Tony learns something about the kind of people prepared to risk their lives for this cause. The 3000-strong pitchfork army reached Taunton and there, in an act he would later come to regret, Monmouth was proclaimed the rightful King.

BBC1, 17:45 David Attenborough explores how animals attempt to overcome the challenges that face them at each of the six crucial stages of life as they strive towards ultimate success - passing on their genes. In this final episode, animals attempt to rear their offspring. A female turtle, returning to the island where she was born 30 years ago, hauls herself up the beach to lay her eggs in a safe place above the tide line. A mother bonobo chimpanzee lavishes care on her son for five years, deep in the forest. A mother zebra must decide where to lead her young foal across the river so that they can reach new grazing grounds. Elephants delicately stroke the bones of an ancestor in a communal experience that appears to draw the family members closer together.

Countryfile is in Lancashire. John Craven explores one of the county’s hidden jewels. He finds a landscape buried beneath undergrowth which was once a true spectacle but is now almost lost to the ravages of time. Ellie Harrison investigates the sculptural art of the area, including a spectacular work built by a local artist to celebrate the Forest of Bowland’s 50 years as an area of outstanding beauty. Countryfile favourites Ian McMillan and Tony Husband are back, this time in Tony’s home county where he tries to convince Yorkshireman Ian of the the joys of the Lancashire countryside. Brendan Fraser, Paul Bettany and Andy Serkis star in Iain Softley’s CGI fantasy adventure about a man with an extraordinary talent, and the consequences of using it. Mo Folchart is a ‘silvertongue’: someone who can bring characters from the pages of novels into physical being in the real world. But it’s a gift he does his best to hide, because each time he brings a fictional character to life, the vacuum created within the written work must be filled by a real person, which is how his wife Resa vanished, after he manifested three ne’er-do-wells from a story. At first he refuses to help one of them, Dustfinger. But then Dustfinger teams up with Capricorn, who plans to force Mo to use his talents to provide him with gargantuan wealth and power. So Mo and his daughter Meggie must set out to thwart the villains and rescue their loved ones from literary purgatory.

Channel Patrol BBC1, 11:30 Documentary series following life on the English Channel, the busiest waterway in the world. The crew of the Galatea are called out to a damaged light vessel which is marking a hazardous sandbank in the Dover Straits. But their mission to tow it into harbour for repair becomes increasingly perilous when Hurricane Bertha closes in on the channel. In Southampton’s busy docks, 30 cranes work day and night to unload the 100 million tonnes of freight that come into the UK every year. But they are 400 feet tall and learning to drive them is not an easy job, as trainee dock worker Ryan soon finds out. Off the coast of Weymouth, two rival skippers go head to head in an epic big fish competition. Over three days every year, up to a hundred anglers compete to catch one of the channel’s largest native fish - the mighty conger eel. With 50 years maritime experience, Paul Whittle has been top skipper five times - but can rival Adrian Brown steal his crown?
Wild Weather BBC1, 21:00 Richard Hammond travels the globe in an attempt to reveal the hidden world of weather. Richard investigates how wind actually starts. He joins up with an American meteorologist called Reed Timmer and a bizarre vehicle known as The Dominator III. Their aim is to fire a probe into a tornado to measure its speed where it is at its fastest - right next to the ground. Richard also visits one of the few places on the planet capable of duplicating a real-life tornado. The 23 million dollar WindEEE Research Institute in Ontario hadn’t even opened its doors when Richard asked them to take part in an experiment. He also braves the winds and temperatures of -50 degrees fahrenheit to take a trip outside on top of Mount Washington in New Hampshire. On April 12th 1934, that station measured one of the highest wind speeds ever measured on land - 231 mph.

The British Property Boom Channel 4, 20:00
Across the country, house prices have been rising at record speeds, with far-reaching consequences for many of us. Channel 4 Dispatches investigates the impact on buyers and sellers, following first-time buyers like Dionne, who faces having to ask her retired mother, Denise, to sell the family home to get her onto the property ladder; Hackney resident Barbara, who has been priced out of the area where she was born; and the foreign buyers snapping up investment flats in the capital that might otherwise have been bought by locals. The programme visits the smallest house on the market in London measuring just six feet wide and on the market for £235,000 - and asks how the price boom will change the face of our towns and cities.

imagine…Colm Toibin: A Widow’s Son BBC1, 22.35 In this thoughtful and lyrical film, imagine... talks to award-winning Irish writer Colm Toibin about the origin of his widely acclaimed novels. Loud, affable and funny in person, Toibin writes sombre stories of grief and quiet heartbreak, repeatedly returning to the dark narrative triggered by his own childhood and to the complex relationship between mothers and sons. In the year that his bestselling novel ‘Brooklyn’ is being turned into a major feature film and his play ‘The Testament Of Mary’ continues to provoke controversy, Toibin is also publishing a new book. Fourteen years in the making, it is his most poignant and personal yet. At this significant moment of reckoning in Toibin’s career Alan Yentob talks to the writer at his home in Ireland and at his other home in Spain – the two places that have come to stand for his conflicted faces of melancholy and abandon. Interviewees include Fiona Shaw, Anne Enright and Nick Hornby.

This brand new film catches up with the Radfords, Britain’s biggest family, over the course of a year. Things have changed a lot for the family since the cameras were last there, with the older children beginning to fly the nest. Sophie has moved out of home and is set to make Noel and Sue grandparents for the second time. Chloe prepares to go to university - to study child development. As the family gear up for Christmas, Sue and Noel look forward to what the new year will bring, but their plans to expand the family further gives them one of their hardest years yet.
Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners Channel 4, 20:00 Christmas is the season to be jolly - unless you’re an obsessive compulsive cleaner, for whom festive fun spells clutter and dust and baubles to be bleached with vim and vigour. Lynsey, Mark and Amanda demonstrate their methods for ensuring a cleaner Christmas. Lynsey throws away her children’s Christmas cards when they’re not looking. Mark likes his decorations evenly spaced on the tree. Amanda steam cleans her tree before spraying it with an antibacterial product. Also, the show catches up with some memorable homeowners from previous episodes to find out if they have been keeping on top of the housework.

Britain’s Craziest Christmas Lights Channel 5, 20:00
Documentary following four UK households as they transform their suburban semis into a glittering festival of Christmas lights. Not for them the average procedure of rooting around the loft for an ageing box of decorations, our Christmas-obsessed characters plan their display months in advance. For them, putting up the lights also involves a head for heights, questionable DIY wiring and an unshakable resolve.
Autopsy Channel 5, 21:00
Part- dramatised documentary series in which forensic pathologist Dr Richard Shepherd re-examines the medical evidence relating to the deaths of famous people. This time, he picks through the facts surrounding Elvis Presley’s demise at his home in Graceland, using testimony from the singer’s childhood best friend, his cousin and his private nurse as well as the medical facts. The autopsy report uncovers the fact that towards the end of his life, nearly all of Elvis’s vital organs were almost twice the size they should have been, and that his system was full of prescription drugs.

Confessions of a Secretary Channel 4, 22:00 Over the last 50 years Britain has changed almost beyond recognition. Police officers patrolled our streets exuding power and respect, teachers could enforce their authority with the belt and the cane, men in the main were in charge in the workplace, and doctor always knew best. With the onset of increasingly strict regulations, health and safety rules and political correctness, this four-part series, Confessions Of, looks at whether many of our professionals have lost the respect and authority they once held so dear and took for granted. With surprising, candid, shocking and personal confessions, ordinary coppers, GPs, secretaries and teachers lift the lid on their working lives.

Russell Howard’s Good News BBC2, 22:00 Russell Howard offers his unique and quirky take on the week’s global headlines and bizarre news stories. Sifting through over 60 international news channels, 140 newspapers from around the world and over 1,000 news clips, no stone is left unturned in his pursuit of the weird and wonderful stories that have been dominating the press this week. Russell is also joined by a special guest with an amazing story to tell.
Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong’s deliciously caustic and multi-layered drama about PR and London’s police force continues. In episode four, the team are reeling in the wake of recent events. As Liz finds herself under attack for her handling of revelations relating to the Commissioner, Finn takes full advantage to side-line her and position himself as advisor to Deputy Commissioner Inglis, who is under pressure following the recent bombing. While Assistant Commissioner Sharon Franklin is tasked with locating the fugitive bomber, Clarkey puts pressure on Davina to leave her husband Banjo, whose growing suspicions begin to have a devastating effect on his work.

Extraordinary voices By Andy Briggs WE all have our favoured brand of music … R’n’ B, Rock’n’Roll, Motown, etc, But live music often leaves us more open-minded.
Stuff we wouldn’t normally be seen putting in our CD players or loading on to our tracklists at home, somehow sounds different. For example, when I was at Scotland’s T in the Park festival many moons ago, I saw The Chemical Brothers perform. I didn´t love their music at the time, yet I was intrigued to see such a huge name in the music industry doing their thing live. An ability that can uproot our resilient musical minds is that of a gifted singer, whose sound, like a magnetic force, holds you in its clutches and pulls you near. Take Pavarotti’s Nessun Dorma or Andrea Bocelli’s Time To Say Goodbye. These songs belong to the world of classical music...a world in which, mainly, the upper-echelon embrace. Perhaps it is to do with finances or perhaps upbringing, I just don’t know. But these songs are sung with such passion and skill that they find their way into the hearts of all who hear them, classical enthusiasts or not. That is the power of a great voice! I have been in Tenerife for a long time. I’m a night owl and I adore listening to talented singers. So why it has taken me till now to hear the fabulous, angelic voice of Elaine Alexander? Her name is synonymous with the likes of Mikey Mike and I.S, veteran singers I grew up listening to over here. I must have been told about Elaine a thousand times, but circumstance kept me and that beautiful voice of hers apart … until now!
A chance encounter in Las Americas, while I was waiting to go
on to a gig of my own, means I am now an excited new member of
the Elaine Alexander fan club. What Elaine has to offer her audience is exceptional. She is diverse to the point of madness. She can, immaculately, sing Listen by Beyonce Knowles - perhaps the greatest modern-day female singer. She performs Where Do Broken Hearts Go as if you were listening to Whitney Houston herself, and Elaine has a voice which can travel between each genre of music seamlessly. Her ability transcends the limits of what you believe to be possible with just the vocal chords nature provides us with. Sometimes, listening to live singers can be uncomfortable. You can find yourself feeling their nerves and are, therefore, worried about them hitting a bum note. But Elaine eliminates all discomfort. She looks like she´s
having fun - and she is having fun! In turn, the audience feels relaxed and it makes for a brilliant night out. Elaine´s confidence can be heard when she sings - a confidence born of experience and an abundance of natural talent. The first time I watched Elaine´s show, just a month or so ago I must have had luck on my side. Not only had I finally heard Elaine sing, but an extremelytalented friend of hers was also in the bar. They treated the audience to a duet. Now, singing alongside Elaine Alexander would be a daunting prospect for any artiste. But when you are the queen of vibrato, you need not fear. Hayley Butler, an established Tenerife act, spent some time across the pond but has now returned. And she has exploded, like a lighted match in a tank of petrol, back on to our awesome music scene.
She sings exquisitely and, when you are writing a column entitled These extraordinary voices, she simply cannot be ignored. Like Elaine, Hayley is not scared to take her fans on a musical, roller-coaster ride. Pop, Rock, you name it and Hayley will do it - and do it well! This year at the Tenerife Entertainment Awards (TEAs), Hayley competed in a sing-off against other contenders for Best Female Singer. And she stole the show to win the award. No gimmicks, no dancers, no fire or any of the various additions to the previous performances we had seen that day Just one young lady and a skyscraper of a voice. Singing Prince’s Purple Rain, her vocals, like a commanding sergeant, demanded silence and the undivided attention of the 1,000-strong audience. Totally spellbound, everyone gazed in amazement as she took an already epic song to new heights. Moment after moment, the heavenly sounds Hayley created carved their way through the crowd and, like a speeding bullet heading your way, you could not look away. It was the highlight of my whole afternoon, and I must say thankyou to Hayley for taking one of my favourite songs and singing it the way it always deserves to be sung! In fact, that´s two weeks on the trot Purple Rain has found its way into my journalistic mind...what can I say it´s a sensational piece of music. I feel that all who attended the award ceremony owe Hayley a debt of gratitude for providing (in my modest opinion) the unquestionable high point of a magnificent afternoon of live entertainment. There is a huge selection of excellent singers over here, but for now it is the unsurpassable talents of Hayley Butler and Elaine Alexander, which, I believe, deserve recognition and applause.

Council’s Xmas trees’ disaster!
39 CW
IF you pass through the Greater Manchester villages of Mottram and Michlehurst in the next few weeks, spare a few minutes to see their latest tourist attractions. They are the proud owners of what locals have described as “The worst Christmas trees in the world”. As these pictures show, the local council hasn’t exactly blown the budget on its festive efforts. Residents of Mottram have created a Facebook page called “Embarrassment of Mottram Christmas Tree!” They have even tried to make the eyesore better by decorating the tree with baubles and Seventies’style tinsel. But if anything, it looks even sadder! Five miles away in Micklehurst, the village’s tree, erected by the same council, is even worse. It has just one string of bargain-basement fairy lights. But the poor co-

nifers are permanent, living trees, and they will remain in the ground long after the 12 days of Christmas. One Mottram resident said: “I thought the tree was quite appalling. It’s normally about 7ft - this one just looks like the top of last year’s tree.” Another added “We have a lot of pride in the area, so to get some-
thing like this is appalling. How’s that for a merry Christmas? “The way things are at the moment, people need something to look forward to, and that’s nothing to smile about. The tree’s pathetic and it’s got to be the worst anywhere in the UK.” While one wag posted on the Facebook site: “At least we are famous for three things now. Ricky Hatton, Harold Shipman and that bloody tree.”
Santa Cruz Symphony
FOR something different this Christmas Day, don’t miss the 21st annual OST event.
The Port of Santa Cruz again becomes the scene of one of the most important musical events of the year, the Symphony Orchestra of Tenerife’s special Christmas Night concert. Last year, over 20,000 spectators enjoyed classical music under the stars in a concert full of surprises and Christmas cheer. Admission is free!
CHRISTMAS time also marks the start of the Canary Islands’ gospel festival, with concerts on all seven islands. The event rolls into the Los Cristianos auditorium next Saturday (6th Dec) with a gala performance from The Latonius and The Star D Choir. Festival headliners Mississippi Gospel Chorale are a 10-strong ensemble under the musical direction of composer, arranger and pianist Jerry Calvin Smith. The MGC is the result of a careful selection made from over 400 Mississippi singers. And this special concert, part of the Oh Happy Day World Tour, is a mixture of traditional and contemporary American black music, especially suited for interpretation to a European audience. Founded in 2004, the MGC have regularly recorded hit albums
and singles, such as I’ve Been Touched, Draw Me Nearer and the classic Swing Low. Jermaine Latonius Earl, aka “The Latonius”, who headlines in Los Cristianos, was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and is an amazingly-talented singer. The Latonius has worked with legends like Tom Hunter Blues, Dwight Robson, Sarah Vaughan, Al Jarreau, and many others. He has sung and acted in plays and operas, such as Trial by Jury, Hansel and Gretel, The Wiz, Blues for Mr. Charlie and Carousel. And Jermaine, who has had great success in Germany, is currently involved in the live TV show Rising Star, a music competition with four judges! These include Anastacia, the singer Sasha and. of course. The Latonius! Tickets are on sale now.

I’ve just met a pearl LOS ABRIGOS is rapidly becoming one of my favourite places to dine out, and my latest adventure took me to Maria Restaurant.
It has been advertising in Canarian Weekly and other local papers for some time and, recently, took advertising space on Oasis Fm. The advert
reads: Since opening in 2011, Maria Restaurant has provided its customers with authentic Mediterranean cuisine. using only fresh market produce. Originally located in Golf del Sur, Maria Restaurant has now relocated to the picturesque port of Los Abrigos overlooking the sea. Specialities of the house is the three-tiered seafood platter and for meat lovers, the high-
quality steaks and loins. The move was a good decision because Los Abrigos, a colourful fishing village where you will see boats bobbing on the waters of the charming little harbour, nestled on Tenerife’s south coast, has a lot going for it. It’s a haven for fish lovers, lined on the pretty harbour side of the port with restaurants which are among some of the best in the South!
There’s nothing quite like dining as you watch the sun disappear behind the horizon to give you that warm holiday feeling, even if you live here! Maria Restaurant has a lovely terrace with stunning sea views - a far cry from the bright lights and party atmosphere of Las Amércas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, and an excellent example of “real” Tenerife. Our evening started when we parked the car in the gravel car park (last road on the right before the roundabout), overlooking the tiny, stony beach. Once you reach the harbour entrance, if timed right, you’ll see the moonlight bouncing off the water, and you’ll hear the gentle swish of the waves. At the restaurant, we were greeted - as everyone is - by the front of house, who kindly asked us where we would prefer to be seated. We chose to sit just inside by the full-glass window so we could enjoy the views and the noise of the sea. There is a modern, spacious feel to Maria. Every aspect, from the tables to the pictures, the plates to the cutlery - and even the candles - has been thought out brilliantly. The kitchens are on full view for everyone to see the two chefs, Patricia and Stalin, prepare, cook and present their meals. Patricia is from Argentina, where she learnt her craft, and Stalin hails from Ecuador. But Stalin was trained
in Madrid, where he also worked before joining Patricia at Maria. We were given the menu and decided to sample the red wine as we pondered (not the correct choice for what was about to come but hey-ho. very nice indeed). Whether or not it’s because of Gordon Ramsey and Co, it seems to me that today’s restaurants are finally realising you can offer far better quality food and a superior service when you don’t have 50-60 items on the menu. In fact the Maria menu, like the surroundings, has been thought through thoroughly. Sarah, our waitress for the night, ran through it with us, explaining the dishes and giving us
just the right amount of time to decide what we wanted. Firstly, the handful of starters offers something for everyone, and we went for the Antipasto for two. This comprised Serrano Ham, a cured, air-dried Spanish meat, also known as Jamón Iberico or Pata Negra. It comes from Spanish Iberian pigs and is considered to be one of the finest in the world. It was complemented by Manchego cheese - a delicious Spanish hard variety made of sheep’s milk - together with goat’s cheese, olives, garlic bread, nuts and dried fruit. After our tasty starters, our main course soon arrived. While waiting, we could hear the two chefs commu-

nicating instructions to each other while the front of house was busy seating customers. There certainly is a nice ambiance to the restaurant. My partner chose the fish for the main course - fresh white fish which turned out to be Dorada, generally considered the tastiest of the bream varieties. It was delivered to the table, perfectly grilled and complemented with sautéed vegetables and Canarian potatoes in Coriander mojo. The advertised “high quality steaks” appealed to me and I chose fillet steak, along with a criolla sauce, sautéed potatoes, garlic mushrooms and crispy carrots. The steak was cooked just as I had asked for it to be, and both our meals were extremely
tasty. The quantity on the plate was ample … and the presentation was so creative that it seemed a shame to actually eat the meal. It was time for my partner’s favourite part of any meal, the dessert: a choice between choc-
olate pudding, vanilla ice-cream, the cheese plate and Maria’s apple cake. We went for the apple cake, served with custard and caramelised nuts. Like everything, it was presented stunningly: deliciously moist, with
perfect sweetness and spice, the large apple chunks and nuts adding great flavour and texture. Throughout our meal, one fact was evident: the advert doesn’t lie. The authentic Mediterranean cuisine Maria offers is freshly made, and the restaurant does use fresh market produce, all with an unparalleled atmosphere and sea views. What the advert doesn’t say, though, is that there is a professional, friendly and knowledgeable service. Would we go again? A definite YES! Opening times Monday: 5-11pm. Tuesday-Saturday: 1-11pm. By Val Sainsbury HERE’S something all you dedicated dieters out there may not believe: not all calories are created equal. say experts.
28th November 2014 - 4th December 2014
Dieters... forget calorie counting! while a second group were given cheese. Both were equally hungry, but those given the crisps ate more than three times more calories. Dr Lucan reasoned that if calories were all important, the children given the fatty, calorie-dense, cheese should have eaten more. He said: “Substantial evidence now implicates foods that are low in fat, and thus relatively low in calories, like potatoes, white rice and sugary beverages, in the development and persistence of obesity and related diseases. “Conversely, evidence is mounting to exonerate higher-calorie foods that
are rich in fat like nuts, oily fish and olive oil and even foods high in saturated fat, like dairy products.” However, dieters still can’t eat what they want. Many breakfast cereals and low-fat yoghurts fall foul of Dr Lucan’s theory, as well as less-healthy foods such as fried fish, crisps and sweets. Tam Fry, of the National Obesity Forum, agreed that food quality was key, and that counting calories caused “all sorts of problems”. He added that although some experts were arguing over whether fat or sugar was worse, a small amount of each was key to a balanced diet and portion control.
Instead of counting numbers obsessively, they believe we should be focusing on what types of foods we eat and that fat might actually protect us against weight gain. Nuts, olive oil, fish and full-fat milk are among the foods that could help keep you slim, despite their high fat content. In contrast, supposedly healthy low-fat foods may be the real diet villains as they leave us hungry and wanting
more. Dr Sean Lucan, From New York’s Albert Einstein College of Medicine, said that focusing on calories may “mislead and harm public health”. He wrote in the Public Health Nutrition journal that two foods may have very different effects on the body, despite containing the same number of calories. For instance, protein fills us up more than other foods, while refined carbohydrates such as white bread, chips and white rice may leave us hungry, or craving sweet foods. Dr Lucan said this means we should focus on the type of food we are eating, rather than its calorie content.

FACELIFT IS NOT THAT EXPENSIVE
MANY of the top complexes here in the South were sold already furnished, and with quality items which have stood the test of time. Good examples of this are all the Parque Santiago complexes, Royal Palm, Port Royale and, among others, Duquesa del Mar on Golf del Sur. But if you rent your property out, and particularly if you do so
He said: “A calorie’s worth of salmon (largely protein) and a calorie’s worth of olive oil (purely fat) have very different biological effects from a calorie’s worth of white rice (refined carbohydrate) - particularly with regard to body weight and fatness.” Some fats, he added, such as those in nuts, olive oil, dairy products, oily fish and avocado, may actually protect against weight gain. And
through the internet, much of your success will depend on the photos you are able to present. The first impressions will be very important because, after all, there is plenty of choice available, maybe even on the same complex as you. Therefore, to be competitive, you need to show your property in the best possible light. Your photos will do the talking for you in this case, so getting it right
he warned that dieters often replace fatty foods with refined carbs. These are lower in calories, but may alter hormones in such a way that we eat more and become so lethargic that we don’t want to exercise. In fact, there is evidence that refined carbs actually whet your appetite instead of satisfying it. In one study, a group of youngsters were told they could eat as many crisps as they wanted,
is important - and need not be particularly expensive. Generally speaking, if the apartment is more than 10 years old, it could probably do with a revamp of the soft furnishings: sofas re-upholstered (presuming they are still in good condition), and new curtains. If the furniture itself was top-notch in the first place, it may well have stood the test of time. If so, you can stick with
it and keep your budget down. Furnishing tastes have also changed during that 10-year period. Swags and tails, seen as luxurious then, are now considered rather dated. And for a rental apartment, they are are high-maintenance dust-collectors. Replacing them with an upholstered pelmet, or even getting rid of the pelmet altogether and having some spectacular curtain poles, can up-
date a property instantly. You can use coloured sun-curtain and a fresh light voile to create a much more modern appearance. And it is surprising how much lighter and brighter a room can look when you take away those heavy drapes. Colour is always important for mood, and here, with our lovely weather and clear light, we can get away with using brighter, tropical colours. Use a neutral base and add a splash of exotic colour in your cushions and pictures, and the property will be more modern and fresh immediately. You can create your cosy ambiance with soft lighting, and it will still look homely and comfortable at night. The effect of changing the curtains, re-upholstering the sofa and putting up some modern prints need not be expensive. And it can revamp your property without breaking the bank, putting you ahead of the game with your rental programme.

Jumpers now reaching the giddy heights
OKAY, so we have seen the Christmas adverts, and the shops are stocked up with gift ideas and decorated for the festive season.
So what else do you need for your perfect Christmas? The essential Christmas jumper, of course! Over the years, we have seen the increase in popularity of festive jumpers, and all the big department stores and supermarket chains stock them. You can order them online easily enough, so why are they so popular in this day and age? I remember Christmas socks as a child, but now it seems the jumper is as essential as a Christmas tree. They used to be knitted by your Nan, and the only time you wore it was when she came to visit. They had terrible designs, and you wouldn’t be seen dead in one. Films have depicted them as a fashion nono: think Bridget Jones and the scene with Colin Firth. But it has all changed, and now, the more extreme the jumper, the more fashionable it is. An embroidered snowman or reindeer is no longer enough ... but if it
flashes and makes music, so much the better. This year has seen an even bigger demand for jumpers, with sales already up by 160% on last year, says the Daily Mail. And ASDA have sold over a million in their UK store. It’s now the in-thing to have one, and celebrities can’t get enough of them. Even Justin Bieber has one, but don’t let that put you off! No matter your budget, you can get a jumper, and this year, designers from Stella McCartney to Paul Smith have realised the their popularity, and have produced their own Christmas versions. Popular with adults and kids alike is Disney’s Frozen-themed sweaters; do you want to build a snowman? The commercialisation of Christmas gets bigger and bigger, and the need to get into that Christmassy spirit
increases by the year. I believe that’s because people like to have things to look forward to. And, having been through a long recession in which people had to cut back, this is the one time of the year where you can splash out. We can all say “it’s not about the present”, and “it’s better to give than receive”, but Christmas is about that feel-good factor - and that’s exactly what Christmas jumpers are - just a bit of fun. Even better if it can be used to help other people. The Save The Children charity has teamed up with ASDA to raise money by launching Christmas Jumper Day on 12th December. And a host of celebrities, from Fearne Cotton, Mark Wright, Union J and John Snow, have modelled the range. With that in mind, have you got yours yet?

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
By Carl from Robot YES, there are fewer than four weeks to go to the big day, and it’s at this time of year, above any other period, that your hair should look its absolute best! Forget shabby ends and more roots than an oak tree - take a good look in the mirror and decide whether what’s looking back at you really will do you justice this party season. If you haven’t updated your style recently, then there’s no better way to show up at your special occasion with an amazing new style or colour. And if you are planning on going to a few festive parties, having your hair done in early December will, maybe, work better for you? Treat yourself to a make-over to really set off that new dress you’ve had your eye on. And even if you don’t want to change your style too much, you
still have to ensure you get your appointment booked now. Don’t be let down by ringing your salon too late. This year, we are seeing a lot more “dressed” hair for the party season. Forget your quick blow-dry for a night out … styling your hair, but in an understated way, is right on trend. Big bouncy curls are being seen on many an A-lister, glam pony-tails are big news and messy put-ups are hot at the moment. If you are seen to have made an effort, you’re going to look and feel a million dollars. But forget your hair and they will forget you! Don’t fall into the trap that many do over here: fabulous dress, amazing shoes … but did you
forget your hair? I see this so many times on a night out, and even wet hair tied back gets me in a hair rage. There is no need to leave out the one thing that will finish off your going-out look; otherwise, it’s like going out half-dressed. Having your hair done now will see you right through the festive season - and will make sure everyone is talking about your look for the right reason. Treat your hair to an intensive treatment to bring back its vitality. Make sure any split-ends are removed and that your cut still has that “edge”. Your colour should look its best, and that includes no tell-tale greys poking through. If you have one complete colour, it may be a good idea to pass the colour through to “refresh” those ends. Ask your stylist for the best way to update your look because it’s the first thing people will notice. Just make sure you’re really going to SHINE this Christmas.

By Monica Dyson ONE of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken by the UK’s Jewish community, after the success of a similar project in South Africa, was proposed earlier in the year by the Chief Rabbi.
It took place last month, but how successful the concept of a totally traditional Shabbat was, I don’t know. But it certainly seemed like a return to the traditional Sundays that we remember as children. The idea was that just for one day, and regardless of how busy their lives were, they would experience one traditional Shabbat, which is the Jewish day of rest and the seventh day of the week. No mobile phones, computers or IPads. No television, listening to the radio and not even travel, apart from walking, shopping - and no working. Sundays were always considered a day of rest in the UK in the old days. Or at least, they were for everyone except mothers, who carried on as normal. Without any clean-

ing, possibly, and with a rest in the afternoon, but certainly having to prepare the amount of food that seemed to go with Sundays, like big breakfasts and even bigger Sunday dinners, while the menfolk spent a couple of hours in the pub. No one ever shopped on a Sunday. It was a time for church, often more than once, Sunday school, hobbies, and visiting or entertaining relatives. If you ask most people of our age what Sundays meant to them as children, they would be linked indelibly with sound and smells. The sound of church bells, the laughter of our friends when we played outside on the road. Some of them were lucky enough to have bicycles and scooters, while others played hopscotch, Tiggy and with balls and skipping ropes. There was no problem with traffic in those days. My sister and I always kept our ears open for mother to call us to say dinner was ready. It was never called lunch, and it was the most important meal of the week as far as we were concerned. We could smell the roast beef cooking and anticipate the wonder-
ful, golden, Yorkshire puddings. Sometimes we were roped in to help with certain aspects of preparation, like podding fresh peas or chopping mint for the sauce if mother decided to buy lamb. That wasn’t very popular with us as it was never as nice as beef for the leftovers next day, with chips and pickle on what was wash-day. I can’t remember that we ever had pork, and we certainly didn’t have chicken because I think they were much more expensive than a joint of beef. The serving of Yorkshire Pudding took various forms. It was traditional for it to be cooked in one large tin and served before the rest of the meal as a cheap way of filling families,
always with gravy made from the meat juices, and sometimes also eaten after Sunday dinner with jam or syrup as a dessert. One rather strange thing that I remember people doing was sharpening the carving knife on the door step. That can’t have been terribly hygienic, surely? The kitchen window was always open when dinner was cooking so that we could hear the start of Wakey, Wakey! It’s the Billy Cotton Band Show, and Two Way Family Favourites, with its beautiful theme music With a Song in My Heart. Two Way Family Favourites was easily one of the most popular radio shows through the Fifties and Sixties, with over 16 million listeners
in its heyday. It would start with this announcement: “The time in Britain is 12 noon, in Germany it’s 1pm but, home and away, it’s time for Two Way Family Favourites.” As a successor to the wartime show Forces Favourites, it was an updated version of a show that had certain restrictions. There was previously to be no mention of fiancées or girlfriends, only wives, and certainly no jazz records to be played, not on a Sunday! Things changed with popular presenters Cliff Michelmore and Jean Metcalfe, whose reallife romance only added to the popularity of the show. So much so that when they announced their engagement, a delight-
ed listener sent them £3,000, which they used to buy a beautiful house in Reigate, Surrey, in 1958. As we got older, Sundays often became a day of excruciating boredom with nothing to do, nothing open and no television to watch until the evening. Sometimes, the only exciting thing to happen was if we happened to get the one cherry which was in the tin of fruit, a feature of Sunday teatime and served with Carnation Milk. Although things have altered over the years and there is no shortage of things to do nowadays on Sundays, a campaign group here in the UK called Open Sundays wants to scrap the restricted opening hours in the retail industry, saying that it will help the economy. At the moment, large shops do not open until 10am, and only for six hours. Not surprisingly, supporters of the new proposals include supermarkets Asda and Morrison’s. But do we really need to shop on Sundays? Wouldn’t it be nice to revert to the old days, when Sundays were family times - and often the only day of the week when father had any quality time with his children.

Leila’s on the mend
A COUPLE of months ago, we received a call from a worried disabled man who had woken up to find a dog in his empty swimming pool.
Eugenio went to the rescue and found a sorry-looking thing, so thin and exhausted she had become disorientated and had fallen in the night. Badly neglected, she has since been fostered by a lovely lady called Deborah Beth, who has done a sterling job in getting her fit and well. Now named Leila, she has heartworm, which we are in the process of treating. Now, Leila really needs her forever home in time for Xmas, ideally with no other pets as she is timid. She is low maintenance and just needs someone to love her. Will you be the one Leila can trust? Call Sue on 629 388 102

Ford’s posh hit parade
By Jav SLEEVES will be rolled up even higher next year at go-getters Ford, with six new models being launched on the market.
And that will add up to their busiest 12-month period for two decades. Motors in the pipeline range from bread-andbutter models right up to “halo” cars, which will push the brand more upmarket and will, hopefully, appeal to new customers. “It’s a gigantic undertaking,” says one company insider, and he’s not kidding! The year kicks off with the market launch of the face-lifted Focus. The popular family hatchback is accommodating a list of updates ranging from a cosmetic facelift right the way up to improved build quality and technology. So far in 2014, the Focus is Britain’s thirdbest-seller, and there are great expectations for the revised model
to follow suit and rattle the tills again. The Focus will be available in hundreds of trim and engine variations, enabling the company to get their message across to a huge selection of buyers. Sitting alongside the Focus for an early launch next year is the all-new Mondeo and, like the Focus, it will be available in a huge selection of combinations, from 1.0-litre petrols to 4x4s and fleet-specific trims, to an upmarket,
Vignale version. Towards the middle of the year, dedicated “Ford Stores” will be created to gear up for the arrival of Ford’s premium Vignale brand, and the new Mustang. Vignale was a classy Italian automobile coach-builder company, based in Turin and established in 1948 by Alfredo Vignale. And of Ford’s 530 showrooms nationwide, around 65 will be upgraded to “Ford Store” status.
They will actually be transformed into mega dealers, according to the insider, and will offer enhanced customer service and larger showroom facilities. Vignale is Ford’s posh weapon in a bold attempt to lure customers away from upmarket German brands such as BMW. Customers who opt for a Mondeo Vignale - and later an S-MAX Vignale as well - will be treated to a VIP experience. This will include a ded-
icated “Vignale manager” and swish dealership lounges. Owners will also be able to enjoy having their Vignale collected by the Ford Store when it comes to servicing. And when it is returned to them, it will be washed, valeted and any minor scratches will be repaired. Even scuffed alloys, the curse of new cars, will be refurbished. By August next year, Ford’s volume Focus and Mondeo lines will be
joined by S-MAX and CMAX MPVs ... before the arrival of the first Mustang CoupesCoupes and Convertibles as November comes around. Commercial vehicles are not being overlooked, either, in Ford’s mammoth, all-out attack scheme. The Ford Transit,, a regular commercial favourite for decades, turns 50 years old in 2015, which marks the first full-year of sales for the new Transit range.
Bare facts about the topless Lexus LEXUS are calling their LF-C2 concept an “opentop design study”, even though the 2+2 roadster shares so many styles with the RC coupé.
And you could be forgiven for thinking that this machine, previewed at the Los Angeles auto show, is acting as a preview to an RC convertible. The Japanese luxury car-maker say the LF-C2 has been designed “to give driver and passenger the best top-down driving experience”. But because this is a design study, most of the focus rests on the concept’s styling. The roadster does without a roof and features a new “experimental”
take on the company’s signature grill design, which dominates the nose. Vents in the front bumper and in front of the rear wheels are designed to keep the brakes cool at high speeds, and they hint at the LF-C2’s performance, as do the four exhaust pipes. The concept sits on 20-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the dashboard features a central screen, controlled by a touchpad and LED lights, which are positioned just beneath the window line and run the full length of the cabin. The concept measures 4715mm x 1840mm, with a height of 1385mm. Those dimensions mean it is 21mm longer, 6mm wider and 9mm lower than the standard RC
But if Lexus do decide to make an RC-F convertible, it would most likely be powered by the 471bhp 5.0-litre engine as the coupe. Lexus US Vice-President and general manager Jeff Bracken said at
the launch of the model: “This concept shows consumers around the world Lexus’s devotion to emotional designs and their passion for an exceptional driving experience.” He added: It’s a power-
ful car, created to appeal to younger customers. Our average owner age is 60, and that’s okay, but we want to be a fullline luxury brand that isn’t just about 60-yearolds.” But because concept
doesn’t have any type of top covering the cabin, it’s hardly productionready. Lexus specify that it is a “design study” only, so it’s impossible to imagine it being on sale in this form.

Confident Carlos earns his stripes
THE heavens opened and the torrential rain did for the crowd and, for most of this match, the contest. It was properly coming down on Saturday night and neither island side seemed particularly keen to bust a gut.
The lowest crowd this season, barely 5,000 souls, braved the storm, and while they weren’t rewarded with the best of matches, they at last got something to warm the cockles. Tenerife were struggling with suspensions and injuries, but on the whole they handled inform Mallorca rather well. Iker was lively, while Vitolo is turning into the energy of the side. Chances were at a premium, the best of them falling to the visitors. It would be fair to say that at the start of the season, Carlos Abad would have been
fourth-choice goalie. Jacobo, Roberto and Nauzet were all ahead of him in the pecking order, and yet here he was with the jersey. His opposite number, the well-seasoned Cabrero, has played over 300 matches, while Carlos was making his full debut, still two months shy of his 21st birthday. Not that you would have noticed. gostera, he was like a rabbit in the headlights for his 45-minute cameo. But against Mallorca he was a colossus. He came for crosses, has strong hands, was p e r f e c t l y - p o s i t i o ned and, on more than one occasion, he screamed, pointed his finger and put his centre-backs in their place. Alvarez and Ruiz wouldn’t have like it at the time, but they

will have done after the match. Late on, Mallorca launched wave after wave at the young cat, but he would not be denied. The excellent Ferreira tested him a number of times, but the young cat was equal to it. Wonderkid Marcos Asensio, who looks like joining Real Madrid, also had some chances saved well. Let’s not get carried away, but Carlos was excellent. And he wasn’t the only Tenerife-born youngster to get a doff of the cap. Young Cristo Diaz was given 35 minutes in the second half to show that the local production line is doing the biz. Much has been written in the local media this week about the number of talented young Tenerife lads who have been blooded in the first team. They don’t all make it, of course, but sometimes you have to roll the dice and see what happens. Believe me the young bucks in the Tenerife B team know CDT have a set-up that will give them a chance if they are good enough. Credit manager Alvaro Cervera for blooding them. Remember, a few
weeks back Jordan McCourt made the bench in Recreativo. The future is bright. The point was a decent one, and the clean sheet rather welcome. This weekend, it’s another trip to Madrid to face the archetypical mid-table side Lugo. They have done really well over the last few seasons after stepping up from Segunda B. They are always easy on the eye, but they always have some steel. The current crop includes, ironically, a Tenerife winger who we all thought would have done “an Ayoze”. When Iriome burst on to the scene at 19, he took our breath away. He had all the talent - pace, touch and, for a skinny kid, he could look after himself. There were just two problems. Firstly, he was rather tall for a wide man. And as he grew he lost that zip, which was half-caused by problem No.2: his body kept letting him down. First it was the hamstring, then the calf, then the quad. Poor kid spent the best part of two seasons injured. When he finally became fully fit, he wasn’t quite the same player. When he exploded on the scene Rafa Ben-
itez, through his Tenerife contacts, was close to signing him for Liverpool after just two matches. He was playing that well. His defining moment was when he scored two dazzling goals against Las Palmas in his Canarian Debut, a feat equalled by ... Yep, Ayoze! Iriome has fought his injury demons and has played every match this season since joining from Mirandes. Now 27, the Icod lad still has plenty to offer, and I’d love a wager that he comes back to CD Tenerife one day. Just think, he was in the same batch as Suso and Cristo Martin, and look how they returned. He will start wide right, but I’d like to see him playing in what we now call the No.10 role. Ricardo played alongside Iriome for a couple of seasons, and he told the press this week that he was looking forward to seeing him again. “He is a good friend and we talk often,” he said. “He is loving it at Lugo, and I think you can see that with his football. He is still a very good player and we will have to watch him carefully on Sunday. “However, I have told him that!”

Gaffers boss the Shamrocks! IT has been mentioned in this column before that Division 1 of the Express Bar Deliveries Darts League is very competitive.
is that Trap Door will entertain the Playboys, although a solid win for either side will take them to the top. And the Playboys look to be in fine form after they battered Summerlands 7-1. Down at the bottom, a rare win for Sundowners saw them leapfrog Picassos, who they beat 6-2, despite Picassos’ Per hitting his first maximum. Pas O Nadas notched their first win for a number of weeks as they took the last rubber from Emerald Lounge, while Naughty Nautas gave Clouseaus a warm welcome, then promptly thumped them 6-2. It’s pretty much as you were at the summit of Division 2 as the top two both recorded
And the latest round of fixtures has shown that again. In fact, the whole thing has been blown wide open, leaving four teams right in the mix. Emerald Shamrocks seem to have been at the top since the dawn of the new millennium, but their reign could well be over come tonight (Friday). They suffered a 6-2 home defeat by Gaffers A, and they don’t have a game this week. The only saving grace

5-3 wins. The Waterfall triumphed at Marilyns, and The Palms at home to Spear Chuckers. A delighted Jamie hit his first 180 for The Palms in that one. Palms Sports Bar continued their good run of form and made
it six games unbeaten, losing just the one point to The Rebels, while Barracuda Hunters put up a good fight against Chipeque Chippers to hold them to a draw. Happy days for Bar 180 A in the Premier
League. They played another match! This time at Gaffers B, who were dispatched with a comfortable 7-1 scoreline. What they will be happier with is the fact that the title would seem to be theirs to lose,
although the destination of the runners-up spot remains in the balance. Target Army, with a game in hand, would appear to be favourites, and their 7-1 victory at Bar 180 B could have been enough to take that spot. But, Phoenix Bar’s 7-1 success at Vikings Ensecan, which included a fifth 180 for Mitch, meant they held on to that place by a single point. Finally, Target Titans’ home defeat by The Pub included a special moment for the man we know as “The Enforcer”. He hit his first maximum of the campaign for the Titans. So step forward long-time committee member, Rob. Nice one buddy!

Warren hangs in there... THE Oasis Fm Fantasy Football league roared back to life this week, and most players came through unscathed. There was one or two new-look squads on display after one or two managers chose the break to play wild cards. So how did everybody fare? It was a strange week in terms of point-scoring, and this is reflected in the Team of the Week, who included
three players from Sunderland, who managed a no-score draw with Leicester. No, me neither! Palace had two after their heroics against Liverpool, as did everimproving Newcastle. The rest of the team compromised players from Spurs, Chelsea, Everton and Burnley. Sergio Aguero frustrated a lot of fantasy managers by drawing a blank against Swan-
sea, and then bagging a fine hat-trick on Tuesday against Bayern Munich! Funny old game. In the battle for the Fantasy League title, Warren Wilson’s Crossfire Hurricanes did just about enough to retain top spot, but Frank Devaney’s Toffees are just a point behind. Joining him in jointsecond spot is one-time Tenerife resident Dan Lawton and his Dan
Utd side. It wasn’t a particularly high-scoring week, and Team of the Week rustled up only 59 points. They were Gordon Wilson’s Coffee Shop Karma, assisted by 22 points from his captain, Eden Hazard. Yet nobody is running away with the league, and, with December just around the corner, the games come thick and fast. Everybody gets the chance to score
plenty of points and make up ground, but you have got to get your
choice of players right and that is so challenging.

Terrace get Pink reality check
WE are fast-approaching the halfway point of the Direct Telecom Pool League, and the table doesn’t lie.
The championship is certainly looking like a two-horse race, while a couple of sides are adrift at the bottom. On Tuesday, surprise Division One side Terrace B travelled to face, arguably, the most improved team Inn The Pink A. And the Amarilla Golf team never got a look in. Maybe they were missing captain Finn. Was it the smaller table, or maybe the trip took it out of them? John and Graham, in particular, were in white-hot form for the hosts, each gaining three wins. The result was never in doubt, with the game eventually finishing 10-2. It will be interesting to see how the Terrace B lads go from here over the next few weeks. Gaffers A, last year’s runners-up, occupy top spot and lead by three points. On Tuesday, they were in action against Dreamers Bar, who have yet to get going this season. It was always going to be difficult against
a Gaffers team, even without Ashley. Stephen and his boys gave a good account of themselves, but the points went to the league leaders 8-4. Reigning champs Tenerife Hammers A had a tasty clash against bar-mates Palms A who drew with Gaffers A a few weeks ago. This has always been a big fixture in the league calendar. All the frames were close and tight, but the Hammers had the rub of the green. They were 6-0 up before the Palms got a few frames back. But a doubled black from Jambo got the Hammers home before captain Paul outdid him with a trebled black to rub salt in the Palms wounds. The race for third spot should go all the way to the wire. It is currently held by The Phoenix, who this week played out the Los Abrigos Steak Derby, against Phoenix Potters. It was a tense night down in the bar, with neither team wanting to lose. Bragging rights go deep in this part of the world. Harry and his boys have had a fine season with what is essentially a new team. Maybe youth was the difference as they were never in trouble.

The 9-3 victory was celebrated long into the night but, thankfully, the rib-eye steak soaked up much of the alcohol. Treehouse A fancy their chances for bronze, but they cam unstuck a little against Terrace Bar
A. They headed down to Amarilla Golf brimming with confidence, but nothing could separate the teams in the early frames, and 2-2 soon became 4-4. With the game nicely poised, Terrace A took

the next two frames to guarantee at least a point. Treehouse took frame 11 to leave captain Mark with a chance of securing a draw. Adi, his opposite number, looked to have the frame under control until Mark produced two world-class snookers. The resulting fouls gave him the chance to get a foothold, from where he went on to win the frame and a massive point. In the final clash of the night, two more barmates faced off - Palms Bar B against Tenerife Hammers C. This was an interesting match, with both teams throwing away crucial frames. As is often the case with these two sides, it went all the way with Palms, inspired by the ever-smiling Andra, just doing enough to take all three points. Hammers C are starting to get on a worrying roll. The Division Two leaders were not in action, which left Bluebell A with an opportunity to draw level on points with them. They started brightly against Inn the Pink B, but their opponents are no soft touch. It was a night
a good, solid pool and in the end, both teams were happy to settle for a draw. Gaffers B, who have promotion hopes, have been going steadily about their task and picking up points. Dreamers B were this week’s opponents and, although they are down towards the foot of the table, they are not an easy team to play. But Gaffers are growing in confidence and took this game in their stride, welcoming another three points. Hoppy’s Bar have made their way into the top half of the table and are good for their position. They faced Picasso’s A in what was an evenly-matched showdown on paper. But Hoppy’s knew that a win would move them up nicely. They were into their stride nice and early, and Picasso’s couldn’t stop them as they marched on to the win. In the final match of the night, Treehouse B hosted Next Door, with both teams level on points. Next Door were the better team on the night, though, brushing aside their rivals for a routine win.

Gunners ready to bash the Baggies!
I DO look forward to the weekend … the prospect of some mouthwatering football, washed down with a few cold beers.
Unfortunately, as I take it upon myself to make predictions every week and to invite challengers, my weekends are becoming stressful. I’m not sure I will reach the end of the season without pulling all my hair out - and there wasn’t much to start with! Anyway, this week I take on Nottingham Forest fan and Oasis Fm DJ Gordon Slayney. West Brom v Arsenal A tough game last week for the Baggies, and another one this week is not what you want. But that is the way the fixtures come up. West Brom’s defence didn’t turn up against Chelsea and this is another clash with an attacking team, although Arsenal haven’t quite got the same bite. Dependent on other results, they could slip towards relegation places this weekend. Arsenal will be wondering how they didn’t beat Man Utd, but it comes down to the attacking bite I’ve just mentioned. They appear to have reverted to the old Arsenal and are constantly trying to walk the ball into the net. Somebody just take a shot! Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Draw Burnley v Aston Villa Two wins on the bounce and the clarets are full of confidence. Burnley will also be aware that if results go their way this weekend, they could climb out of the relegation zone. Danny Ings has started to show some of his Championship goalscoring form from last season. And if he can keep it going, this could turn into a remarkable comeback. Villa have been in

freefall, but they will have been happy to take a point against highflying Southampton. There is still a lot of work to be done, and it needs to start here with a win. Defeat will see them slip below their opponents. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Draw Liverpool v Stoke What has gone wrong on Merseyside? Liverpool look like a team running on empty, with the weight of the world on their shoulders. Yes, the departure of Suarez and Sturridge’s injury has had an effect, but they have a large squad this season and should be winning games not being rolled over by teams like Crystal Palace. Stoke will be rubbing their hands at this fixture after seeing the way Palace bullied Liverpool in the last game. Stoke will play with a strong physical presence and make life very difficult for Liverpool. And as much as it pains me to say it, I think another defeat is on the cards. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Home win Man Utd v Hull So Van Gaal made a poorer start to his reign than David Moyes did, But he has managed
to get United into the top four and, injuries aside, they are starting to make progress as a team. The confidence is starting to come back now and their swagger. Beating Arsenal will have put their tails up, and this game cannot come quick enough. Hull were always a good, solid, defensive unit, but they are really stuttering now. Last season, at 1-0 up, they would have shut up shop and ground out a win. But they allowed Spurs to keep playing attacking football and, eventually, paid the price. They could be in the relegation places this weekend. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Home win QPR v Leicester This is a real sixpointer, given the position of both teams. Harry Houdini has another challenge on his hands, but it is getting more and more difficult by the week. Rockbottom, with December approaching, and you have to fear for his team. They have played well against the bigger teams but performed badly against their closest rivals. This is a big test. The Foxes got a point last week but have still slipped into the bottom
three, giving Nigel Pearson a real job on his hands. They looked good at the beginning of the season and need to get back to that level. More importantly, they need Ulloa scoring goals again. Prediction: Draw Beat Benson: Draw Swansea v C Palace The Swans had a really good go at Man City and probably felt a point would have been a good result, but they just couldn’t hold on. However, they still maintain a good league position and will feel they can push for a European place come the end of the season. The best is still to come from Wilfried Bony, and his goals will win them games. So last week was a real Warnock performance. Talk about blowing your own trumpet, but hats off to Palace. They pulled off the result of the weekend, and lifted the relegation gloom above them. The players will believe that if they can beat Liverpool, they can beat Swansea, but complacency could creep in. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Draw West Ham v Newcastle It’s fairly safe to say that both teams are currently punching above their weight.
Hammers were rolled over by Everton, even though they were the better team, but that’s how football goes. Home advantage here with the crowd behind them should see them halt their opponents’ recent run of form. I’m not sure the fans would get behind Pardew if he won the league. They are still not happy, but they should be because Newcastle have climbed the table to fifth spot. They have a gem in Ayoze and the players all look as though they would run through brick walls for the manager. For me, a top-eight spot beckons for them.. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Home Win Sunderland v Chelsea Although they struggled last season, Sunderland still produced one or two shock results against the bigger teams, But this one’s a big ask. For me, they have to take the bull by the horns and attack from the first whistle-. There is no point in trading punches with Chelsea - an early knockout is what they need. Mourinho has assembled a solid squad at Chelsea, strong and physical all over the pitch with finesse and skill thrown in. It
makes them extremely dangerous. They do tend to start well, though, and then ease off, which could end up costing them. There again, they always seem to have that extra gear. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Away Win Southampton v Man City This is a huge test for the Saints because so far, they haven’t faced one of the league’s socalled big boys. A great start to the season has got the fans dreaming of European football next season, and this game offers a good yardstick, performancewise. They have been lacking goals in recent matches, so Pelle will play an important part, and they will hope Schneiderlin is fit. City showed character in coming behind against Swansea and then, of course, Bayern Munich on Tuesday. They will appreciate the importance of this game: lose and they will be five points behind Southampton; win and they move into second spot. They may just be starting to get where they need to be. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Draw Spurs v Everton Spurs are level on points with their visitors and are going into the game coming off the back of a league win against Hull, where they scored a late, late winner after trailing. It is time for them to up their game if they are to challenge for a top-four finish, so results in these games are important. Both teams are coming into this fixture on the back of a Europa league game. Spurs have the advantage as they play at home but Everton are away in Germany, although they do kick off earlier. Roberto Martinez’s side will need to put in a good performance if they are to prevail, but I feel they may be suffering from a European hangover. Prediction: Draw Beat Benson: Home Win
