Meat-cleaver man is guilty of vicious attack on couple A DORSET man was this week jailed for 8½ years after his terrifying attack on a couple with a meat cleaver and knife in a Costa Adeje bar.
Martin Leonard, 64, was sentenced for malicious wounding and aggravated assault and battery. He was also ordered to pay over 50,000 euros compensation. Prosecutors wanted a total term of 22 years on two charges of attempted murder and one of causing serious bodily harm. But the court ruled that Leonard, despite apparent evidence to the contrary, had no intention of killing his three victims when he launched the unprovoked attack in the Next Door Bar, based in the Malibu Park hotel/ apartment complex, in January 2012. British expat couple Andy and Wendy Stewart, from Doncaster, suffered horrific facial injuries from the blunt side of the 13-inch cleaver. And Wendy’s ear was nearly sliced off Leonard, who told the court he had drunk “at least eight pints of beer” that night, was wrestled to the ground by courageous holiday-maker Paul Matthews, from Stourbridge. A third victim, Briton Lynn Gilliard, who was working in the bar, had tendons severed in three fingers of her right hand as she stepped in to protect Mrs Stewart. Leonard, who owned an apartment on the complex and was a regular winter visitor there, had been held on remand in Tenerife since the attack. During the onset of last month’s trial, the court heard how witnesses saw Leonard brandishing a seven-inch kitchen knife and the cleaver in the bar. Prosecutors said Leonard became embroiled in a heated argument with Mrs and Mrs Stewart. He was asked to leave the bar afterwards but returned minutes later, brandishing the knife and cleaver. Without
warning, he lashed out wildly at Mr Stewart, slashing him in the head and left shoulder. Doctors said Mr Stewart suffered a deep wound from the bridge of his nose to his hairline which needed 15-20 stitches. His wife sustained serious facial injuries as she tried to protect her husband. She had 21 stitches to sew her ear back on and doctors told the court it was “hanging on by the skin” when she was admitted to hospital for urgent treatment. Barmaid Ms Gilliard has partially lost the use of her right index finger and admits to suffering “nightmares and insomnia” since the incident. The court heard that Leonard was eventually restrained by father-oftwo Mr Matthews, a former car salesman from
Stourbridge who was on holiday. Mr Matthews, speaking via a video link from a magistrates’ court in England, described how he reacted instinctively and risked his own life to disarm Leonard. “I was out on the terrace having a cigarette when I heard shouts and screaming,” he said. “I naturally ran inside and saw Martin Leonard holding a meat cleaver in one hand, and what looked like a hunting knife in the other. “There were several people in front of him bleeding profusely. There was general mayhem in the bar. I decided to grab both his arms and used my knee to push him to the floor. I smashed his arms against the ground to release the knives. “I picked them up and threw them behind the bar as there was nobody
there, and it was the safest place for them. Then I dragged Martin outside. “I was so angry and frustrated that I started to punch him, not just restrain him. I was enraged at such a horrific scene. Eventually, someone pulled me off.” The court also heard Mr Matthews had said in a police statement that, in his judgement, “the defendant intended to kill someone and would have gone all the way if he had not been stopped”. A panel of three trial judges, chaired by Tenerife Criminal Court President Joaquín Astor, listened attentively throughout the five-hour session as the three victims of the ferocious attack explained how events had unfolded. Andy Stewart described how he was having a quiet drink on his
night off work with his wife when Leonard, a complete stranger to the couple, approached them and engaged in conversation. Mr Stewart said: “When he discovered I ran a bar in the Puerto Colón area, he became abusive and accused me of selling drugs in the bar as, in his opinion, it was the only possible way I could be making money there. “I asked him to go away as I didn’t want trouble. But when I later went to the toilet, he came in after me and punched me, knocking me to the floor. I tried to get up but he jumped on top of me. “Two friends who heard the commotion ran in and pulled him away. He was asked to leave the bar but came back a short time later. “I was beside the door finishing my drink and about to leave when he came in again and, suddenly, I felt a big blow down the middle of my head, with what I thought was a bottle.” Wife Wendy told the court she saw Leonard approach Andy and then strike him with the cleaver before turning to attack her. “My ear was nearly chopped off and, just as he tried to hit me again, My friend Lynn stepped in and was cut badly when she put her hand in the way to protect me.” Ms Gilliard described how she had ordered Leonard out of the bar after the initial argument
and saw him return a short time later. She said: “He entered the bar with knives in his hands. He went straight for Andy and hit him from behind. I saw him raise his hand again and I thought he was going for Wendy so I grabbed her - but he caught me, too.” She added: “I don’t think he was using the knives to intimidate. For me, he wanted to kill.” In his opening court statement Leonard, who acknowledged that the two large knives had “probably” come from his apartment, admitted causing bodily harm. But he pleaded not guilty to the attempted murders of Mr and Mrs Stewart. When pressed by the judges as to why he was now admitting guilt, he said: “It is clear that three people were injured and I was responsible, although I remember nothing about it. I must be guilty, even if I don’t remember.” Speaking through an interpreter, he explained that he had been taking co-codomol painkillers for arthritis in his knee, and was also on paroxetine anti-depressants at the time. He said: “I was not aware until the prison doctor told me that the two medications should not be taken together. My GP never warned me.” His lawyer, Rubén Padrón Pérez, repeatedly probed the doctors - who examined him in prison to say whether the combination of the drugs and alcohol may have impaired Leonard’s mental faculties and caused him to become aggressive. Both doctors said it was “very unlikely”, particularly in a person who had confessed to “drinking up to 12 litres of beer, wine and other drinks every night”. When asked by the judges why he had not mentioned the medication issue until now, Leonard said he had never been given the chance, and blamed his lawyer for “losing his original statement” in which he had raised the matter.

Alonso reveals all Corrupt is never far from the headlines in Spain and it’s been another bad year for the countries politicians. Both local and national scandals have been on the front pages but Tenerife’s leader is cut from a different cloth.
This week the president of the Tenerife Cabildo went public with his financial details. In a move which is unlikely to be repeated around the world Carlos Alonso revealed his salary, mortgage status and family wealth. In his ongoing commitment to transparency he revealed his monthly salary is around 3,800 euros. This doesn’t include two extra payments a year. It does show his basic pay to be much higher than the average wage, it’s not a patch on some politicians and is a lot lower than regional mayors, let alone the average for a Cabildo boss. On this Alonso says “I chose my the profession. I am happy to be a public employee rather and someone who wants to accumulate wealth.” Alonso used his personal website (www. carlosalonsotenerife. com) to reveal the private details and also noted his earnings from earlier in his career. He also explained his working desires “I have always worked in public administration in the Canary Islands, then in Brussels and now in Tenerife. I have always stuck to this solitary profession, and on this advised companies and individuals as an economist. I have also taught at the University of La Laguna. Before becoming involved in political activity, I was an official in the European Commission in Brussels.” In terms of remuneration he said on his website “My current salary as president of the Cabildo is around 3,800 euros monthly
net (that is what goes in the current account every month) and to this we must add two annual bonus payments. As president of the Cabildo I have a duty to preside over and participate in the conduct and management of the Cabildo and its entities. This includes the Island Water Board, the Consortium of Taxes and companies such as those in regions such as Granadilla. I am also on the Board of the Port Authority. In most cases I delegate these tasks to a director or vice president who leads the daily affairs of the companies or entities that have I have assigned, since it would be impossible to deal with everything and assume the responsibilities of each decision effectively. “ However he points out that he has an almost daily interest in “The effectively and activity of ‘Metropolitano de Tenerife’, the Estate of Granadilla, the Cable Car Pico del Teide, Buenavista Golf, the Tenerife Science and Technology Park, Mercatenerife and the Tenerife Tourism Board, as well as the FECAI sessions and the Council of the Port Authority. The quantities I perceive annually for these activities vary, but in the last year stood at
8,000e net per year.” As for what he pays the taxman Alonso said “Obviously I pay all my taxes on income receive. Last year I paid more than 35,500 euros.” About his time as an official in Brussels he explains “My last salary at the Commission in 2007 was above 6,300 euros a month net, that figure right now if I reinstateed my place, would be an increase which would take it up 8,300 euros monthly net. Plus as I have a son this would be higher again. (The European Commission remuneration is fixed by the composition of the household and those with families get more).” So as Alonso points out, he would be much better off in his cushy Brussels job working for the EEC rather than having to do long hours and put up with a lot of stress running Tenerife. Finally, Alonso revealed his homelife a little. “I live in an apartment which I share with my wife. It is about 120 square meters and we have two cars. One is a Saab 93 purchased in Brussels over ten years ago and the other is a Mini which is twelve years old.” “I also have an interest which I inherited through my father, along with my brothers.
I own part of the house where my mother lives. Regarding my debts and financial assets, I have a mortgage which still owes 74,000 euros and an investment fund which is worth 29,000 euros. I have a pension fund and insurance for death and disability.” The total balance of my financial wealth is 35,000 euros of outstanding debt (If you included any out-
standing mortgages and loans alongside on paper what I would be worth).” Explaining what he believes Alonso said “My heritage is my time. I decided long ago to use my assets and strengths for the general interest which is why I have a background in public activity, with positions of political responsibility at regional or island
level but above all as a public official or employee. And I’m doing that now as President of the Cabildo. That has been the basis of my choice I think is the best way. I did not choose this profession as a public employee to accumulate wealth but to work in creating opportunities and organize the interests of others in pursuit of a better society.”

Cabildo are after even more flights TENERIFE Cabildo has been working hard over the last few years to increase the number of visitors to the Island.
A couple of years ago they targeted the cruise liner industry, and its efforts have paid off with record numbers of ships and passengers recorded in 2014. With a foot in the cruise market, the new plan is to try to entice more airlines and passengers from different countries and regions to Tenerife. And again, it seems as though the Cabildo’s efforts are bearing fruit. Tenerife has recently increased its links with the Peninsula and it seems that there will be more tie-ups with major European cities, and even Africa, in 2015. In recent years, there have been more routes with the Nordic countries and a firm increase in the numbers visitors from the main markets such as England and Germany. The launch of flights to Senegal
and Morocco has also worked out and this week the Cabildo announced they will be focusing on a few new fronts. It’s been revealed that the Cabildo are negotiating the launch of major routes with Lyon (France), Lisbon (Portugal), Amsterdam
(Netherlands) and Israel. These four routes are currently out to tender along with provisional plans for a few other airports. Eelde airport in Groningen (Netherlands), Aalborg (Denmark) and Venice (Italy) are also being wooed and the Cabildo
is hammered again JOSÉ Miguel Pérez, Canary Islands Government Vice-President and Minister of Education, has announced that State funding in education in 2015 will be reduced by 100 euros per capita for 2015.
He believes the move is “deeply unfair”, and adds: “Any cuts are unacceptable, but this is seriously unfair on the Islands. It leaves the archipelago in a very delicate position.” In a parliamentary hearing, the Minister raged at the lack of funding, and fewer resources. Pérez said that every
year, the Canary Islands received less and less, and “these further cuts makes it impossible to balance our budgets when compared with 2011”. In that budget there was actually an increase, but with the economy still fragile, the finances have been pegged back to those of a few years ago. An unhappy Perez said: “I understand the restrictions imposed by the state when it comes to education, but the money is gone in one fell swoop. This affects the work of the regional governments.” Fellow MP Rita Gomez, of the PSOE, said: “The education funding in the archipelago is not at the best levels.” while Nicolás Gutiérrez, of the
Canarian Coalition, criticised the “unfair suffering”. The Canarian education department says it will have 100m euros fewer, compared with the beginning of the last term. For its part, the Government pointed out that the cuts were down to an EU mandate and not a decision they would have undergone voluntarily. It will be interesting to see how the budgets are tweaked. In recent years, cuts have resulted in the loss of teaching positions, which led to strike action. It is unclear exactly how the budget shortfall will be plugged, but it’s unlikely the Canarian Government will be able to pick up the slack.
hope to have flights to those airports in the next few months, The major carrot being dangled to prospec-
tive new airlines is the granting of financial incentives to airlines for the promotion of the archipelago and low-
er operation costs of using the islands airports. A ‘war chest’ was approved in April this year, after a negotiating process between the Government of the Canary Islands and the European Commission which allow important exceptions to the Canary Islands for granting this type of financial aid to airlines. A few weeks ago the Cabildo presented plans for a route between Tenerife and New York. Despite there being no concrete plans, talks are still ongoing and hopes remain high that the route will be fully operational in the winter of 2015. Meanwhile the Department of Tourism has strengthened business operations Frankfurt, through the Lufthansa, and Brussels, by Brussels Airlines which will see more flights in the new year.

Rajoy’s ‘sound’ Health Minister PARLIAMENTARY spokesman Alfonso Alonso Aranegui has replaced “profitseeking” Ana Mato as Spain’s new Health, Social Services & Equality Minister.
He was sworn in on Wednesday at a brief audience with King Felipe at Zarzuela Palace. Mato was widely criticised for her bad communication and mishandling of Spain’s Ebola crisis, especially during the first week in October, when nursing assistant Teresa Romero became the first non-African Ebola transmission case in Europe. Mato was forced out on 26th November, hours before Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy took part in a parliamentary debate on corruption, after Judge Pablo Ruz labelled her a “profit-seeking participant” in the Gürtel corruption case which has shaken Spain’s governing party. With the country’s
next General Election scheduled for late next year, Rajoy was said to have provided a less media-shy, safe replacement, because he will have to defend the PM’s controversial healthcare policies and spending cuts. Alonso will also have to take care of what remains of Rajoy’s controversial abortion reform.
In September, Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz Gallardón resigned after Rajoy performed a U-turn on what Gallardon considered his most important piece of legislation. Yet it was supported by Catholic conservatives and criticised heavily by women’s groups and healthcare professionals. Gallardón said last
month that he was “disgusted” with the decision to reject the new abortion bill. Alonso is a political ally of Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, who, during the past few months, has been acquiring more political power within Rajoy’s cabinet. The Deputy Prime Minister was handed
the Ebola portfolio to fix during the week of crisis, mismanaged so badly and publicly by Mato. And she regards Alonso’s appointment as “excellent news”, although not everyone agreed. The Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE) levelled severe criticism, equality spokeswoman Carmen Montón, saying: “Alonso is not an expert
in anything - health, social services or equality. He is emptying the ministry of content and this shows how little social affairs matter, especially equality.” In fact, Alonso is not a doctor or former healthcare professional. He holds degrees in Law and Romance Philology, and entered local politics as a Popular Party councillor in the Basque town of Vitoria in 1996, where he was also Mayor for eight years between 1999 and 2007. Alonso, who became an MP in 2000, skipped a parliament while Mayor of Vitoria and, on his 2008 return, with Rajoy still in opposition, he was made Deputy Spokesman for the Popular Party in the Spanish Congress. During Rajoy’s tenure in Moncloa since the end of 2011, Alonso has been the party’s extremely visible spokesman in Spain’s lower house, giving weekly press conferences for the country’s parliamentary correspondents. And his efforts in the job have won praise from the Prime Minister.
‘Spy’ student who fooled King and Government! A SPANISH law student, who gatecrashed the King’s coronation after pretending he was a spy, doesn’t know whether he will be prosecuted or feted!
Francisco Nicolas Gomez Iglesias, dubbed “Little Nicolas”, is believed to have fooled dozens of Spain’s elite by passing himself off as various government officials, including a secret service agent and
an adviser to the deputy prime minister. The 20-year-old, arrested in October on suspicion of fraud, forgery and impersonating government officials, was bailed while police investigated the case. Mr Gomez, according to Spanish publication El Confidencial, has been studying at one of Madrid’s top universities - but has also been lunching with business executives and politicians, even joining them in the VIP box at Real Madrid’s stadium. Mercedes Perez, the judge overseeing the investigation, wrote in
a report that she could not understand how “a young man of 20, using only his own word, could have access to government conferences, places and events, without his behaviour causing any alarm.” Her report was also quoted as saying he received thousands of pounds from a businessman in return for brokering a property deal while claiming to be a Spanish Government adviser. Police became suspicious after he tried, unsuccessfully, to get into a party at the US Embassy.
A search of his house found fake government vehicle permits, a police siren and two official Civil Guard and National Police licence plates, according to the New York Times. Among the events he claims to have been invited to was King Felipe VI’s June coronation, which followed the abdication of King Juan Carlos. And the student was even pictured shaking hands with the country’s new ruler at the event. Mr Gomez claims he received text messages from King Juan Carlos, telling Spanish chan-
nel Telecinco: “The day of his abdication, I sent him a message and he replied, ‘Thanks a million, JC’.” It is not clear how Mr Gomez managed to carry out his alleged scam because the Spanish Government, the Deputy Prime Minister, the country’s intelligence organisation and the ruling PP Party have all denied employing him. Mr Gomez told Telecinco: “I only did what was best for Spain. I don’t know if you want to call it ambition or co-, but I am 20 years old and I was driven by the desire to collaborate
with the state.” The case has caught the Spanish imagination, as photos and videos emerged online of him in the company of royalty and politicians, with funny, fake Twitter accounts joining in, posting photos of the student next to Darth Vader and walking beside Pope Francis. He has been dubbed “Little Nicolas” by the Spanish press in reference to a French story about a naughty schoolboy. A Facebook page dedicated to him has more than 37,000 fans already.

He’s incognito - with comedy galore in store Heartache as charity worker Marion found dead at home THE tree is up, the shopping has begun and the advent calendar is already taking a battering. My Dad always told me that as you get older, the years go quicker.
It’s probably the truest thing he has ever said. How is it already December? The office-party season is now in full swing and, thankfully, ours is a good week away. I’m rubbish when it comes to fancy dress and I really have no idea what I’m going to do. A trip to a Chinese shop should cure that. The works do aside, I’ve been looking forward for ages to this weekend’s Comedy Club at Showtime. It’s a fine bill and all the lads are excellent. Don’t miss Wouter Meijis, who is back for a second gig here. When the tall Dutchman was here a few years ago, he utterly ruined it for the following comedians.
I’m not going to ruin it for you, but he is a dry, observational comedian, running the rule over life among the British. Comedy gold. And then there is a man I first stumbled across 20 years ago. You would not have seen Ian Cognito on TV and you never will. You will not read about him in the papers or discover his work on youtube. He lives up to his name, yet his name is everything. He is the first comedian to headline three gigs at Tenerife Comedy Club, and he told me on Oasis Fm this week that he was rather proud of that. Cogs is great company off-stage, and a riot on it. He is the same comedian he was 20 years and, in fact, he may have even mellowed a bit recently. Remember, if you are lucky enough to get tickets, to see him on Saturday night. I just hope he manages to keep fully-dressed this time! For last-gasp tickets, call 669 622 622.

MARION YATES, a tireless worker for the Helping Hands in Tenerife charity, has died at the age of 65.
It came as a shock to all who knew Marion, current President of the Scorpio complex, which forms part of the Pebble Beach Village community, on Amarilla Golf. Heartfelt tributes were paid by her best friend, Jakki Abrahams, and Helping Hands founder Liz Montague, who worked hand in hand with her for some years, fund-raising for charity. Jakki, who had been her close friend for 22 years, discovered Marion last Thursday, “curled up in a ball” on the settee at her Scorpio home. “Various people had been trying to get hold of her, me included, without success,” said Jakki. “We became concerned, so I went round and found her lying there. “It was a dreadful shock because she looked so peaceful, and I know everyone will miss her terribly because she was a great champion for children and adults alike. “In particular, she loved the children at Granadilla’s Guardyl
Home for orphans, and they loved her. Nothing was ever too much trouble for her, and she was able to give the kids even more support when she joined forces with Liz at Helping Hands. “She was a teaching assistant at Juan Garcia Perez School in San Isidro for years, and started her own charity for the Home about seven years ago, after meeting two of the kids there.” Jakki added: “She was the best friend anyone could ever have, and there was nothing she wouldn’t do for you. “If you had any troubles, she would be there in a flash, sorting them out. And if a child at the school complained about being treated badly, she would be there, all guns blazing, defending him.” Marion was actually a seamstress by trade, and took great pleasure in making costumes over the years for various groups in the South, including Showtime’s The Sound of Musicals, Ritmania School of Dance and Thomson Holidays’ Legends of Broadway. Liz, still stunned by the shocking news, also found warm words for her Helping Hands companion in the same vein.
“Only last Monday (24th Nov), Marion was doing what she loved doing, buying Christmas presents for all the Children of Guardyl,” said Liz. “And it was this Monday when we received the heartbreaking news that she had passed away. It was a total shock and has saddened many around us because this is such a loss to our community. “Marion has always been there with her full-on support for ‘her’ children, as she loved to say, which was so very true because she treated them as her own! “Marion was also very hands-on with the centre, making regular visits there with donations for the children - and anything they required. “Summer excursions were always fun, and we will hold fond memories of them. The children adored her, and she holds a special place in the heart of each and every child.” Liz added: “I met Marion four years ago and, over that time, she became a fantastic part of the Healing Hands team, so happy to help in any way she could. “She did a superb job of representing Helping Hands on Amarilla and Golf del Sur, and everyone knew Maz. The
Guardyl Home and the CEE Disabled School at Guargacho, which Helping Hands support, are devastated at this sad news. “Each year, Marion has played a huge part in the organisation of their Christmas parties, so this year it will be so sad for her not to be here. “I know she will be proud that the show goes on. We will all be thinking about Marion on this special Guardyl day and will continue to look after her children. “She will certainly be missed but never forgotten, and all her work will be remembered from this day on. “Rest in peace, Marion Yates. xx” Marion, who moved from Manchester to Tenerife some 24 years ago, leaves a brother and sister - and a wonderful legacy, especially at the Guardyl Home. Earlier this year, Helping Hands, with Liz and Marion at the helm, supplied new equipment for its renovated playground. And only last month, they were at it again, presenting a 24,000euro mini-bus to the Home, paid for with funds raised over the years, to transport the orphaned youngsters around.

Disabled school’s Open joy AN Open Day at Adeje’s Los Olivos Centre for the Disabled on Wednesday attracted more than 300 people.
The event, to mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities, proved a resounding success.
During the busy morning, visitors were able to view first-hand the available facilities at the centre, which cares for 181 people. And they enjoyed the various events performed by Adejebased associations and groups. Councillor Carmen Rosa González Cabrerae, responsible for special needs persons, said:
“Opening the doors to the public, in general, is a way of showing the local community the kind of municipal resources available, as well as helping break down barriers that may exist for those people with special needs.
“We firmly believe in working towards the incorporation of these people into society as a norm, and that they will actively participate, too. “For that reason, we are working on a number of different projects, with social integration
as the primary aim for all ages.” Among the groups taking part in the open day were the Dzamling Gar community, who performed a number of Tibetan dances, and the Globalterapia association, who gave a dem-
onstration of canine therapy. The Huerto Ocupacional El Viso de Arico gave a demonstration of adapted “palo”, a traditional guanche sport, and Ademi Tenerife wowed those present with an exhibition of wheelchair basketball. There were also information stands for the Spanish Cancer Association (AECC) and the Tenerife Mental Health Association (ATELSAM). The Adeje Centre for Persons with Disability in Los Olivos opened its doors in 2005, cofinanced by the Council and the Fundación CajaCanarias. Among its primary aims are to encourage personal autonomy through education and work services. At the same time, the Council has spear-headed actions to develop policies of integration through education and work, paying special attention to the rights and liberties for people with disabilities, and working to improve the quality of their lives and that of their families.

Rajoy gets to grips with France-Spain meetings PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy has been pressing the flesh in Paris this week as part of the 24th France - Spain Summit.
The bilateral summit was divided into seven sector meetings at a ministerial level: Justice; Home Affairs; Economic Affairs and Competition; Industry, Energy and Tourism; Employment; Public Works; and Education, Culture and Sport. There was also a sector meeting of State Secretaries for the European Union.
The summit took place at the historic Élysée Palace, where the Spanish PM held various meetings with his French counterpart, President Hollande, and also spoke with various French ministers. The event was a chance for the two countries to exchange points of view on the Juncker investment plan. They examined and offered ideas on the European Union draft budgets, and also covered standard, cross-border policies. Other issues of particular interest tackled included collaboration in the fight against terrorism, the fight against organised crime and il-
legal drug-trafficking, along with home affairs problems. At the 2012 FranceSpain Summit, the Ministers for Home Affairs signed a three-year France-Spain Action Plan to Step up Cooperation in the Fight against Drugs, which
was satisfactorily reviewed at the 2013 summit. Illegal immigration across the Mediterranean also concerns both governments, which ask for greater involvement from the European Union. The three major
events defining cultural relations between the two countries next year are: the Velázquez monographic exhibition, at the Grand Palais in Paris; the opening of the Pompidou Museum in Malaga in early 2015, and the Barceló monographic collection at the Picasso Museum in Paris. In terms of bilateral relations, France is Spain’s leading customer (17.18% of all exports from Spain in 2013) while Spain is the fifth-largest supplier of France (6.68% of all imports to France in 2013). In turn, France is Spain’s second-largest supplier (with 11.79% of
total imports in 2013) while Spain is France’s fifth-largest customer (6.83% of all exports from France in 2013). Estimates show that there are more than 2,700 Spanish companies in France, principally in the industrial, services, energy, and textile and fashion sectors. French companies in Spain continue to play a leading role in bilateral trade in both directions. It is estimated that more than 775 French groups carry on their activities in Spain through 2,150 operational centres, mainly in the Madrid and Catalonia regions.
A decade of Blue Pixies ADEJE’S municipal Duendecillo Azul (Blue Pixie) crèche is celebrating its 10th birthday, having cared for more than 900 children in that time.
Education Councillor Andrés Pérez Ramos said: “In recent years,
crèches have become one of important resources for mothers and fathers working to build a family life. “We are very pleased with the work carried out by the Duendecillo Azul team over the last 10 years. During that time, we have seen the social relevance of this school in Adeje as a help to families. “The Council fully un-
derstands that to build a more equal future, a number of basic pillars of society have to be in place, such as education, training - and care for our young people.” He added that many political initiatives had underlined the importance of infant schools through services and attention to young people, all of which has helped enhance the participation of women in the workplace. “As well as assisting families, infant centres have also played an increasingly important part in education,” he said. “Today, they are seen as much more than a helping hand for families and are now recognised as an active tool in promoting social equality.” Councillor Pérez Ramos pointed out that many of today’s studies emphasised the importance of access to preschool care-centres, both for the development of the children and for the benefits they will have when they enter the main school system. “Data shows that early schooling can improve academic performance,
and it seems necessary to continue promoting the use of pre-schooling for all,” he said. “It is a way of promoting and encouraging the entry of women into the workplace, and the reduction of the existence of social distinctions.”
The idea of a municipal crèche was tabled in 1999, when the Department of Social Services carried out a study on the need for a preschool centre. A class was opened in Las Nieves (Los Olivos) to meet a growing
demand from families, and the Council’s next step was to open a preschool centre in the borough. The objective was to care for babies between 0-3 years old and teach them. Since then, the Duendecillo Azul has seen hundreds of local children pass through its doors. The councillor praised the centre’s staff, saying: “From the beginning, they dedicated themselves to each and every child. They are professionals and it is a pleasure to see how they help and teach each individual.”

Outlook bright for Spanish firms
SPANIARDS are more optimistic about next year’s business prospects than companies in other countries.
Yet there is genuine concern over the possibility of a new eurozone crisis in 2015. Business conditions in Spain’s manufacturing sector are improving “at rates not seen since before the economic crisis”, according to the latest Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), published by Markit. The data is based on “sharp rises in both output and new orders from both domestic and export markets”. Andrew Harker, Markit’s senior economist, said that given the length of the Spanish crisis, with negative numbers for five or six years, “any kind of growth is good”. But Spanish companies, more than the global economic context or reforms by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, are taking it upon themselves to adapt to the new situation, which is beginning to drive growth, despite years of decline in absolute terms. “One thing they’ve mentioned quite a lot is their own internal efficiencies,” said Mr. Harker. “So quite a lot of the credit can go to their own streamlining, especially when large
parts of the eurozone are struggling. “Efficiency gains have helped them and, in terms of the manufacturing, they’re mainly thinking about the costs of their inputs, the materials and not the jobs. Dairy products, petrol ... that sort of thing.” He added: “I believe quite a bit of it has been company restructuring plans, especially during 2012, which is probably paying off now. “Some of it was business practices, and quite a lot of workforce restructuring the workforce index was below 50 for a good five or six years.” The score Markit uses to measure confidence among managers rose to 54.7, up from 52.6 in October. And any score above 50 is considered to be a positive outlook on the current business situation, although it reflects a rate change and not a shift in the absolute number of manufacturing activity or jobs created. The new orders and new projects have led to a rise in production “at the fastest rate in 7.5 years”, reported Markit. “Output has now risen every month for the past year, as well as more jobs for Spaniards, at the joint-highest rate since July 2007.” The chain of events also led to an increase in purchases from suppliers, but at a lower cost, and with more demands
placed on their supply chains. Markit also noted: “Lower input costs led to another reduction in output prices, which fell at the strongest rate in 14 months. Output prices have decreased continuously since August.” In a related study, Spanish business confidence in 2015 has fallen since the summer, in line with that of other countries surveyed. Markit’s Spain Business Outlook in October showed increasing confidence at Spanish companies, “well above both eurozone and global averages”, although at a lower rate than during the first half of the year and since June, as Spain prepares to enter a triple election year in 2015. Spanish service sector companies are more optimistic about 2015 growth than the country’s manufacturing firm in terms of outlook, jobs and capital expenditure. “The main threat to the outlook is the possibility of a renewed economic downturn in the eurozone, with France, Germany and Italy all posting weaker sentiment than in June,” said Mr Harker. “The extent to which the Spanish economy can weather stagnation or worse in the euro area will be key in determining its economic for tunes over the next 12 months.”

A HUGE fight between hardcore groups of Spanish football fans known as “ultras” - left a 43-year-old man dead and many more injured on Sunday morning.
Two large groups of Deportivo de La Coruña (Galicia) and Atlético Madrid fans clashed on the banks of Madrid’s Manzanares River. On one side were a hundred-or-so members of Riazor Blues, the radical section of Deportivo’s fan base. And on the other side, more than 150 members of Frente Atlético, from the ultra section of Atlético Madrid, the La Liga champions whose stadium is near to where the incident happened. Most of the rival gang members were armed with bats, metal bars and knuckle-dusters. Anyone who wasn’t tooled-up grabbed metal chairs from a nearby terrace. The groups began to throw fireworks and firecrackers once they were within 20 metres of each other,. After a minute of loud bangs, fighting broke out - punches, kicks and stabbings. The outnumbered Galician ultras fled the scene, just three minutes after it had all kicked off, but some were left behind. A bystanders’ recording showed a dozen or so Atlético ultras throwing one of the Galicians into the river. He managed to get out of the water after having fallen five metres into the Manzanares. One minute later, other gang members did the same with Francisco Javier Romero Ta-

boada, a Galician ultra who managed to hang on to the handrail after being thrown over the side. Blows and beatings rained down on him until he fell into the water. For 30 minutes, Taboada called for help from the river as he tried to keep himself afloat and attempted, hopelessly, to scale the sheer wall lining the bank, according to a taxi-driver witness. A number of passers-by harangued one of the few municipal police officers on the scene for not jumping in after him, even
though the clash between the gangs continued on the river bank regardless. The officer said he was awaiting back-up and 15 minutes later, municipal squad cars arrived, as well as officers from the National Police, who began making arrests. Later on, firefighters used a ladder to rescue the stricken man from the water. When an ambulance finally arrived, the man was in cardiac arrest, showing signs of hypothermia. He was, according to an offi-
cial source, “clinically dead”. Romero Taboada, or ‘Jimmy’ as he was known, was a familiar face to the police in La Coruña. He was 43, and had a wife and two children. The incident left 10 injured, with 21 arrests, 30 people identified by the authorities - and a lot of stitches. Among those detained were two members of the Bukaneros, the radical section of Madrid team Rayo Vallecano who, like the Riazor Blues, are also of the extreme left. Frente Atlético, in contrast,
follow a neo-Nazi ideology. There were blood stains everywhere, and among the last to be arrested was a La Coruña radical with a stab wound in his back. The police, whose interviews continued on Sunday night, have requested a judicial order to check the telephone records of the arrested men to find out whether the fight had been pre-meditated. The Spanish Government’s Madrid delegate, Cristina Cifuentes, said the tragedy could have been avoided had the Na-
tional Anti-violence Commission part of the Interior and Culture Ministries classed the game as “high risk”. Had that been the case, 10 times more officers would have been deployed around the stadium (around 150) and a police escort would have accompanied the ultras on their journey into Madrid. The commission claims it did not know the 150-plus radicals would be travelling to the Calderón stadium. Despite the incident, the game went ahead.
Battered turtle in flight to freedom AER LINGUS has come to the rescue of a battered, 15-year-old loggerhead turtle, by flying him out to Gran Canaria this week.
Leona, nursed back to health in a Galway aquarium, had awaited a passage to a Canarian sanctuary - and warmer weather - for several months, until the Irish airline stepped in The storm-tossed animal was wrapped in damp material, in a purpose-built box, and given an economy-class boarding pass in the main cabin of a flight from Dublin to Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas.
The suffering turtle was discovered in a comatose state on the Co Clare coast after last
winter’s severe storms. She was taken to Galway Atlantaquaria after being examined
by Dr Simon Berrow, of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group. Galway county vet
Rita Gately, who escorted the Loggerhead turtle to Gran Canaria, along with aquarist Joanne Casserley, has worked with aquarium staff on the animal’s recuperation. She was recently introduced into the aquarium’s ocean tank to ease her transition into a marine environment. Loggerheads are an endangered species, and a Las Palmas turtle sanctuary has been examining Leona, in the hope of releasing her back to the sea by the weekend. A GPS tracker will enable the turtle’s progress to be followed on the internet, with regular Twitter posts, while Galway’s Atlantaquaria will also have updates on Facebook.

Hindus care for families in need
TENERIFE Sur Hindu community has donated over 200 kilos of goods to Adeje’s Food Bank for babies and children of families in need.
Group President Carlos Mirpuri said: “We have been able to make this donation through the involvement of all the Hindu community
in Tenerife. “We organise many solidarity events with the intention of helping as many people as we can. And we hope to carry on in this way for as long as it is needed.” Adeje Social Welfare Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo welcomed the group’s generosity, saying: “The Hindu community is aware of the needs of people suffering at this time, and I would like to extend our gratitude for
this laudable donation.” It includes nappies, cereals, dried milk, wetwipes, etc, which will be allocated by the Social Welfare department to families registered with them, according to needs. The Councillor added: “These products are particularly needed as they are for babies and infants, and include food as well as hygiene products. Together, they would have cost over 3,000 euros.”
Atlantic record hopefuls on course, despite huge setback SEVEN dedicated Shrewsbury rowers, on a worldrecord mission, have lost one of their Toby Wallace team, who had battled asthma problems for a few days.
The crew, including 47-year-old Steve Hardin, set off last week in a battle against rivals Oystershack to row the 3,000-mile journey, from Gran Canaria to Barbados, in the fastest time ever. But Cornwall rower Oliver Waite was airlifted off the boat during last weekend when
his asthma caused him breathing problems. Race organiser Gemma Chalk, of Oceanus Rowing, said: “He was airlifted from the boat by helicopter and was taken to the Canaries for a medical check-up before flying home to family in the UK.” She added: “At no time was there any danger, and this was not an emergency situation. But it was in his best welfare interests.” The Toby Wallace team are continuing their journey across the Atlantic as a six-strong crew. Harpin is using the challenge to raise money for the Bickerstaff
Endoscopy Unit at Telford’s Princess Royal Hospital. He has already raised more than £800 for the unit, and hopes to reach the £5,000 mark before they get there. Team skipper Simon Chalk, from Market Drayton, said: “We are sorry to lose Ollie and wish him well, but we will row our socks off to Barbados.” His team, despite being hit by bad weather, are favourites to cross the finish line first, especially as the Oystershack team have suffered with oars broken by strong gales. And they lost their wind generator when it blew away.”

SPENDING in British households last year outweighed income as regular family outgoings increased.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said its Family Spending report found that households brought in £517.30 per week in 2013, up more than £16 on the previous year when adjusted for inflation, but below 2006 levels. Housing, fuel and power costs overtook transport to become the biggest area of spending, at a weekly £74.40. And people, it seemed, put a good time ahead of debt worries because recreation and culture was the third-largest spending category, with an average of £63.90. This figure includes the cost of TVs, computers, newspapers, books, leisure activities and package holidays. The ONS said average weekly expenditure on food and non-alcoholic drinks in 2013 was
£58.80 - with £15.60 going on meat and fish, £4.30 on fresh vegetables and £3.30 on fresh fruit. And around £22.60 was spent on clothing and footwear. And when it came to the regional breakdown of statistics, there was a definite North-South divide. Householders in South-East England spent more than Londoners, averaging £6 extra at £585.40, which partly reflected higher commuter costs, while the North East spent the least at £424.60 weekly. The figures were compiled at a time when inflation easily outstripped earnings growth, further eroding family spending power. But cost-of-living rises are currently matched more evenly to wage increases.

Mohammed is a real knockout WOULD you Adam and Eve it? Mohammed has become the top name for boys, chosen by parents in Britain.
It follows a huge surge in popularity for Arabic names generally, according to new research. The UK’s top baby names of 2014 shows Mohammed ascending 27 places from last year to claim the No.1 spot for the boys, according to the BabyCentre website. Also in the boys’ top 100, Teddy was the biggest climber, Kian and Jonathan were the highest new entries, and Omar, Ali, and Ibrahim were all new entries. For the girls, Sophia was top, Maryam was the biggest riser, and Nur, Emilia and Gracie were the highest newcomers.
Sarah Redshaw, BabyCentre Managing Editor, said: “With the increase of Arabic names plus Aarav, an Indian boy’s name, the top 100 shows the ever-increasing diversity of the UK today. “Parents have also been influenced by celebrity-name choices. The Beckhams and Simon Cowell have been big influences this year. Eric, the name Simon Cowell chose for his son, increased by 314%.” The names of David and Victoria Beckham’s offspring have also prompted a trend
among new parents. Harper is a new entry in the top 100, while Romeo is up 67% and Cruz is up 400%. From Game Of Thrones, the name Emilia was a new entry at No,53, with parents also registering the names Daenerys and Tyrion. The name Piper was up 267%, thanks to popular TV series Orange Is The New Black. Breaking Bad also continued to influence, as Skyler, Jesse and Walter all showed increased popularity. But Ms Redshaw added: “Parents are wary of names associated with
celebrities who exhibit bad behaviour, the controversial pop singer Miley Cyrus being a prime example.” The name Miley has fallen, as have Amy and Nick, following the release of the mystery thriller book and film Gone Girl. Royal names in general continued to be out of favour, with George dropping a further five places. The name slipped out of the top 10 to No.13 shortly after the future king’s birth last year. Nazi monster no longer alive
N A Z I - HU N T E R Efraim Zuroff is convinced that one of the world’s most-wanted German war criminals is dead.
Zuroff, told the BBC he is “99% sure” that Alois Brunner, died four years ago, adding “We cannot prove it forensically, but we are certain that is the case.” Brunner, an SS captain who would now be 102, is accused of deporting more than 128,000 Jews to death camps during the World War Two. He was the right-hand man to Adolf Eichmann, the Gestapo’s “Technician of Death”. There has been uncertainty about his existence for many years But Dr Zuroff, director of the Simon Wiesenthal Centre in Jerusalem, and the chief investigator pursuing Brunner, said new information had recently come to light about his death and burial in Damascus. It came, he said, from a “reliable” former German secret service agent, who had served in the Middle East. He said the new evidence revealed that Brunner was buried in an unknown location in Damascus around 2010 and had been totally unrepentant. In April, Brunner was removed from the Wiesenthal Centre’s most wanted list - a move signifying that it considered him to be dead.
Dr Zuroff, also a Holocaust historian, agreed that the latest information provided more concrete evidence to support that conclusion. “Brunner played a key role in the implementation of Hitler’s ‘Final Solution’ to murder Jews,” said Dr Zuroff. “And he was a monster.” He said Brunner sent 47,000 Jews in Austria, 44,000 in Greece, 23,500 in France and 14,000 in Slovakia to camps where most were murdered. Brunner is believed to have fled to Syria in the Fifties, living under the assumed identity of Georg Fischer – with successive regimes offering him protection Syria has repeatedly denied harbouring him, yet it was reported that he served as an adviser to President Hafez alAssad, and is thought to have instructed his government on torture tactics. The Austrian-born SS chief, once described by Eichmann as one of his best men, was dispatched by him wherever the murderous
Gestapo felt round-ups of Jews were proceeding too slowly. From June 1943 until the liberation of France, Brunner sent thousands of Jews to almost certain death. He waged a reign of terror on the French Riviera, hunting down Jews who had sought refuge in the relative safety of the Italian occupied zone He was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment In 2001 by a French court. Brunner was in charge of the Drancy internment camp outside Paris, where Jews rounded up in France were held before being sent to the death camps. An estimated 345 children were among his victims. Dr Zuroff said that Brunner survived at least two Israeli intelligence assassination attempts, in 1961 and 1980, while in Syria. The doctor said that the Syrian civil war made it impossible to know the precise location of Brunner’s grave.
German airline ‘retired’ after walk-out by pilots
A PILOTS’ strike on Tuesday led to German airline Lufthansa cancelling 1,350 flights - affecting more 150,000 passengers - following a row over retirement benefits. It was their ninth strike since April, hitting both short and medium-haul flights. The company’s longhaul and cargo flights were also affected. Europe’s largest airline asked for new talks
with union officials, calling the strike “disproportionate”. Lufthansa wants to phase out its early retirement scheme, which goes against the grain with their pilots. They are able to retire at the age of 55 currently, and receive up to 60% of their pay until the standard retirement age of 65. Lufthansa said it had made concessions in recent talks, including
a 5% pay rise for pilots. The strikes this year have clobbered the airline’s operating profits by £102m. The union said that,“despite all efforts for compromise proposals” by Lufthansa pilots during several rounds of negotiations since October, it had been unable to come to a satisfactory agreement with the company’s management.

CW 18 Workers’ double-bubble at Xmas costs 8bn euros www.canarianweekly.com
Money Matters
SPAIN’S public sector workers will be paid double wages at Christmas, which is costing 8bn euros from the country’s Social Security reserve fund.
The Employment & Social Security Ministry says it will reduce the reserve fund to 42.7bn euros, which works out at around 4% of Spanish GDP.
In Spain, most fulltime contracts are organised around 14 yearly payments, one each month with a second in July and December - in time for the summer and Christmas holidays respectively. At the end of 2011 the country’s pensions reserve fund held 66.8bn, which means Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s Government has used up more than onethird of the total allotted capital, amounting to 24.1bn, on extraordinary current pension

payments. A Ministry statement read: “In the month of December, the Social Security system has a large-financing need to face up to the payment of two pension payments - the ordinary and extraordinary - as well as the income tax payment corresponding to these payments.” The statement added that since its creation in 2000, until 1st December 2014, the fund had generated a net income of 21.8bn euros. In July, the Spanish Government used a fur-
ther 6bn euros from the reserve fund to pay the summer’s extra pension instalment, bringing the total use of the reserve fund this year to 14bn. Spanish daily El País reported that it was the first time such a large sum had been taken out of the reserve fund at once, and that last year, a total of 11.6bn euros was withdrawn. At the time Tomás Burgos, Spain’s Secretary of State for Social Security, said the Government would
continue to use the reserve fund for such payments, “for as long as the deficit persists”. And he was adamant that the country’s social security system was not under “critical” pressure. El Mundo reported at the beginning of December that the European Commission did not expect Spain to meet its EU deficit target in 2014 or in 2015, although this year it wouldn’t miss the target (5.5%) by much (5.6%).
In July, the IMF said that while Spain had made “strong progress” in cutting the deficit since Rajoy became Prime Minister in 2011, “the deficit is still very large, and debt is rapidly approaching 100% of GDP”. One month earlier, international investors attending the Economist’s Spain Summit in Madrid were sceptical that the Spanish Government would be capable of reaching its stated deficit target of 3% in 2016.

THE BEST SCHOOL FOR YOUR CHILD! By Jonathon Green LIVING in Tenerife with children can be the best choice you have ever made. The outdoor lifestyle, the hours of sunshine, and the low crimerate make this the ideal place for them to grow up in. Most parents, however, are faced with the difficult choice of deciding the best school for their children. And as things are quite different here, and with the international community inherent in these islands, the choices are much more varied than back in the UK. Choosing the right school can be a little daunting, especially as the personal experiences of parents, and those of friends back home, has little relevance. So we have created this guide to help steer you towards the right decision. There are five types of school from to chose in Spain, and, when you are trying to decide on which is right for your child, just remember that there is no correct decision. It is merely a personal preference, based on several important factors: whether you are sure you want to stay in Tenerife long term, and that your children probably will, too; the academic level and future aims of your children, and your current, financial situation. All these contribute, to varying degrees, on the best choice to make - and the importance of each depends very much on you. The Spanish and Eng-
lish Curriculum differ to a large extent and, for this reason, many people feel it is important to get this decision right. It might be that one school is better suited to one of your children and another to the other; if your child is really good academically, you might want to consider a private school to boost his/ her potential qualifications, or an English environment so that more worldwide universities are available to them. Or, perhaps, if your child is going to be happy in Tenerife indefinitely, completely integrating him/her into society might be your preferred choice. The five types of school available in Tenerife are: Public School, Private English school, Private Spanish school, Private German school and “Colegios concertados” (which are private schools with government funding). Each has its advantages and disadvantages. The main choices you have to make are Public v Private and English v Spanish. They are separate concepts, but as the two main decisions for most parents are Public&Spanish or Private&English, they are heavily intertwined. Public Spanish School Advantages: Free. Close to where you live. If you speak a language other than Spanish at home, your child will grow up totally bilingual. Integration into Canarian society. Local friends. Disadvantages: Large classes (these are increasing with the gov-
ernment’s new spending cuts). Less choice of where to send your children as you are limited to the schools near you. Your child’s written/ reading English will not develop at the same rate as children in the UK Government institution, so quality and enthusiasm of staff may not be guaranteed. No admissions policy. Discipline may be poor. If you don’t speak Spanish, maybe communication with your child’s teachers is a bit limited. Private English School Advantages: Small classes sizes. Learning in an environment your child is used to. Greater range of academic possibilities after leaving. As they are businesses, they are highly accountable for the quality they provide. Strong values and expectations, and the ability to refuse entry or remove children who are disruptive to other children’s learning. Larger social circle: Two sets of friends; local friends and school friends. If a language other than English is spoken at home, the child will become fluent in three languages: English, Spanish and the parents’ mother tongue.
If you speak English, communication with your child’s teachers is much easier. A-levels are fully recognised and accepted worldwide by Spanish, European, UK, American and other universities. If you decide sometime in the future that you no longer wish to stay in Tenerife, your child can integrate seamlessly back into the UK system. Disadvantages: Feepaying. Less integration in Canarian society. Will take longer to learn Spanish. Smaller schools may result in smaller groups of friends. Local businesses may not understand to what the grades achieved refer, but this would require simple explanation of the equivalent grades in Spain. (IGCSE = BUP, A-level = COU, A = Sobresaliente, B = Notable etc) Note: not all private schools are the same. It is imperative to ensure that the school you are thinking of sending your child to is fully authorised and acknowledged by the Spanish and British systems. If this is not the case, the qualifications obtained will be invalid.
Private Spanish School These have a mixture of advantages and disadvantages of the above systems. Fee-paying and controlled admission resulting in a higher quality of education in theory. Your children will learn Spanish at the same rate as in a public school, and faster than in an English School. There are many Private Spanish schools which advertise intense English in their curriculum, which would help children keep their level of English up if you decide on the Spanish system, but it is important to check whether this really is the case in the classroom. Semi-Private Spanish School (Colegios Concertados) These are semi-private establishments which get a government grant. The benefits are that you should be paying less than at an equivalent private school, and getting a better education, in theory, than a public school. The government does put certain restrictions and obligations on these schools, so the number of children in the class sometimes means the quality of the teaching is slightly compromised. The installations tend to be of great quality. Private German Schools These schools on the Island have a high reputation and, with Germany now demanding a lot of highly-skilled workers, many local families are putting their children in these schools. It could be advanta-
geous to English families to send their children there as they could, in theory, become fluent in three languages. The disadvantages of these schools is that they are in the area close to Santa Cruz, which may be a little far for some people living in the South. However, a good school is a good school, irrelevant of the language lessons are taught in. And there are many ways to help you recognise a good school: number of children in the classroom, teacher-to-child ratio, facilities and classroom discipline. But the main question you should ask is whether this is the correct learning environment for my children. Do the staff care? This applies from the teachers looking after your children, directly up to the decision-makers at the top. The only way to assess this is to visit the school itself, and look into the classrooms while lessons are in place. Is the teacher actually teaching? Are the children paying attention? While the academic side of schooling is important, attitude is what gets people to where they are. Does the school teach respect? Are the children polite and well-behaved? Do they look happy? If a child is content, he/she is more willing to learn, and, more socially, capable of interacting with peers. If a school can achieve this, you can rest assured that you have made the right decision.

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! The Final
Don't Miss...
Sunday 7th December, ITV1, 21.00
The Final: Everyone has their eyes on the prize but who will fall at the final hurdle in the race to be this year’s King or Queen of the jungle? Last year saw Westlife’s Kian Egan crowned King of The Jungle, with David Emanuel as runner up. There were squabbles between Emmerdale’s Lucy Pargeter and Beauty Queen Amy Willerton, Alfonso Riberio taught his campmates the famous Carlton dance from The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and who could forget the moment Joey Essex learnt how to tell the time. This Autumn we saw Michael Buerk, Jimmy Bullard, Craig Charles, Gemma Collins, Carl Fogarty MBE, Nadia Forde, Vicki Michelle, Tinchy Stryder, Melanie Sykes and Kendra Wilkinson, Jake Quickenden and Edwina Currie enter the jungle. They have survived the Bushtucker Trials, jungle life and their fellow celebrities but who will win the ultimate prize as viewers vote for this years King or Queen of the Jungle?
Wild Weather with Richard Hammond Monday 8th December, BBC1, 21:00 Richard Hammond travels the globe in an attempt to reveal the hidden world of weather. Richard investigates the crucial role water plays. Without water there would be almost no weather: no rain, no snow, no hail, no clouds. So Richard goes in pursuit of water in all its forms. He tries to weigh a cloud, finds out how rain could crush a car and gets involved in starting an avalanche. Along the way he tries to find out why clouds float, by building his own cloud with the aid of a cattle trough, some humidifiers and atmospheric scientist Dr Jim McQuaid. But will their cloud float in the air like a real cloud? He also drops in on renowned hail scientist Charles Knight in his lab in Boulder, Colorado to discover that there is far more to hail than meets the eye. Richard sets about firing ice and hail at a board to find out which does the most damage. Finally in conjunction with the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF, Richard joins Walter Steinkogler as he starts an avalanche.

The enigmatic Tom Parfitt (Michael Palin) has disappeared, along with his ghostly Indian companion, Isha (Mayuri Boonham). A traumatised Hannah Ward (Jodie Comer) calls detective Rob Fairholme (Mark Addy) for help. Rob meets Hannah and her brother Sean (Jamie Rooney-West) in Scarborough and tells them Tom has been sighted at a nearby caravan park and they find him battered and bruised, his caravan destroyed and drenched in water. Tom refuses to be drawn on the significance of Scarborough Fair, but admits that the singer of the song, Richard Hutton, was his wife Dorothea’s grandfather. Hannah persuades Rob to visit the Hutton family village of Goathland, where they encounter Dorothea’s sister, Loveday Hutton (Sheila Hancock). She tells them that her grandfather’s version of the song, if sung right to the end, has the power to lay a ghost to rest. Hannah is determined to use the Scarborough Fair song to free Tom, but at what cost to her and Sean?

The Billion Pound Base: Dismantling Camp Bastion Channel 4, 20:00
Camp Bastion: a fortress built to fight the Taliban in Afghanistan. For eight years it’s been the powerhouse of UK and US military operations. Now Britain’s biggest overseas base since World War II is closing down for good. Channel 4 was given exclusive access to the men and women whose job it was to pack up this giant jigsaw puzzle, ending one of the longest wars in British history. A town the size of Reading, with a massive infrastructure airport, hospital, fast food restaurants - is being dismantled bolt by bolt and sent back to the UK. What is left will be handed over to the Afghans. But with defences and manpower depleting daily, in the face of a constant threat from the Taliban, it’s a dangerous race against time to close this city in the sand.

Panorama BBC1, 20:30 Domestic Abuse: Caught on Camera. Panorama reveals harrowing footage and other evidence of domestic violence incidents that now account for a third of all recorded assaults with injury in England and Wales. Filmed by police response teams wearing bodyworn video cameras, this new style of evidence gathering is helping to bring perpetrators to justice. But years of coercive control and terror often lie behind the violence; Panorama hears from wives, mothers and children who have also endured non-violent domestic abuse, which is now likely to be made a criminal offence in its own right.

Brian Pern: A Life In Rock BBC2, 22.00 Comedy actor and award-winning documentary filmmaker Rhys Thomas (Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender, The Fast Show, Star Stories) and fellow Fast Show comic Simon Day (Grass, Down The Line) combine once again in the rock doc parody. Brian Pern (Day) is an ageing rock star and former front-man of the ground breaking progressive rock group Thotch. In episode one of this series, he and his band mates reunite to discuss the making of their first ever Jukebox Musical, Stowe Boys. This is not easy as they hate each other. Not only that, on the opening night of the musical, Brian is unexpectedly arrested by Operation Bad Apples Officers for a crime he doesn’t know he has committed. Will he make the second half?

The Missing BBC1, 21.00
2009. Three years after Oliver’s disappearance and no significant progress has been made in the case. 2009. Tony and Emily’s marriage is hanging by a thread but then a surprise turn of events brings both Tony and Emily back to Chalons du Bois for the first time since 2006. In the present day, the information that Tony, Julien and Emily received gives them a tenuous lead. With Tony and Emily back in Chalons Du Bois and finally making progress in the case, there is a thawing in their relationship.
Secrets Of The Castle BBC2, 21.00 Episode Four: The Castle’s Community of Skills. The team delve deeper into the secrets of the skilled communities who built medieval castles. The stonemasons working on the castle walls are dependent on blacksmiths, whose metalwork was magical to the medieval mind-set. Ruth, Peter and Tom discover the ways in which every aspect of construction requires the masons, blacksmiths and carpenters to co-ordinate their efforts - from making and sharpening tools, to processing wood, and securing timber scaffolding on the castle walls. As we’ll discover, water-mills were hugely important to medieval communities. Producing flour for their bread required up to 2 hours a day of grinding by hand. But one mill could produce as much flour as around 40 people grinding grain by hand, thereby freeing up man-power by eliminating ‘the daily grind’. In England, as early as 1080, there were 5,624 watermills, according to the Domesday Book. But there are major teething problems with the Guedelon mill, which Peter and Tom are helping to fix. A wooden walk-way is also being constructed to connect the Chapel Tower with the Great Hall. The team follow every step of the process - from cutting down trees and shaping the wood through to the complex task of bringing the cut timbers into place around the stone walls of the tower.

The penultimate episode in Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong’s deliciously caustic and multi-layered drama about PR and London’s police force. With tension in the capital rising in the aftermath of the nightclub shooting, Banjo reassures a nervous Robbie ahead of the internal police investigation. At headquarters there’s a vacancy at the top of the force and, to the Mayor’s office, Acting Commissioner Charles Inglis is the obvious candidate. With Finn as his trusted advisor, it spells the end for Liz.

By Andy Briggs NOT for the diplomats among you, nor the fainthearted or easily offended. But for those committed to evenings of unrestricted hilarity and entertainment, I present to you Tenerife´s very own Mark Wilson and Paul Price … The Blues Brothers.
In 1980 a movie was released named The Blues Brothers. It was a piece of cinema history that would produce one of the most famous soundtracks ever. It went on to become a cult classic, spawning an ever-growing following of fans and even, eight years later, a sequel: Blues Brothers 2000. This was not so much a movie but more a wet and soggy cabbage disguised, unconvincingly, as one. It’s is a terrible film, but I’m not are not here to discuss box office flops; rather, two men whose show has been an arresting and outstanding contributor to the entertainment circuit in Tenerife for a long time. Mark and Paul’s show is among the crème de la crème of musical and comedy spectacles to be seen on the Island. Permanently gigging and permanently packing every venue they play, they are masters of their craft and an extremely-sought-after duo.

On a mission from God! It is hardly surprising, because when you can combine comedy and music without compromising on the quality of either, you posses a rare skill. I have often seen singers take five minutes and more between songs to try to entertain the audience with jokes that aren’t funny and anecdotes that aren’t amusing. If you´re a great singer, stick to what you know best and just sing. Equally, some comedians will do 45 minutes of stand-up and end their show with two or three songs. Surely there is a reason you are a standup comedian and not singer, so turn off the music and get back to making people laugh. In a time of political correctness gone mad and people somehow drawing connotations between Tom and Jerry cartoons and racism, Mark and Paul are a refreshing burst of sexist, misogynistic, full-frontal, we-couldn’t-give-aduck attitude - and it’s quite simply fantastic. Half the time it’s the women in the audience whose laughter drowns out that of the men’s, proving we are not as sensitive as the media would have us believe. Mark and Paul will have a stab at anyone, and make no apology for it. And nor should they, It doesn’t matter if they are black, white, male, female, small, tall, fat or thin, the duo leave their audiences compelled to laugh. It is improvised and uncensored comedy at its finest. But let us not focus
entirely on the comedy side of this fine show because the unmistakeable sound of Chicago blues is the fundamental key to their success. Even if you have never seen the film, believe me, you will know the songs. In relation to earlier topics, away from making people laugh, Mark and Paul sing excellently. With great timing and on-point harmonies, they sing songs to packed bars and dance floors by some of the world´s greatest artists such as Ray Charles, James Brown and many more. If you have never seen Mark and Paul on stage, I hope this wee piece of writing can act as inspiration to find them. But there is one more thing I’ve yet to mention - these guys dance! Yep, you read it right. They dance! Alongside clever and versatile comedy, and
funky, soulful music, there is also dance to be offered. With respect guys, it isn´t dancing that will win Britain´s Got Talent - maybe because Paul
hits 40 next week - but it is finely co-ordinated steps, audience participation and, for me, the embodiment of the whole show: great music merged with great
comedy. In the closing scenes of the movie, the Blues Brothers Jake and Elwood leave in their wake what seems like hundreds of police cars, upturned and smashed to pieces at every Chicago junction. It’s a scene of total destruction and chaos as they manage to settle the tax bill whose payment they have been pursuing relentlessly. Similarly, Mark and Paul often leave in their wake a scene of destruction and chaos, but it is beautiful destruction, and awesome chaos. Like Jake and Elwood, this duo are on a mission from God, but not to pay an outstanding tax bill. No, it is to entertain the pants off people (sometimes literally). And by God they do!
The social hate-work THERE is much discussion surrounding social networks these days. Instead of people exchanging phone numbers, we simply add each other on Facebook.
I´m not really one of these “I just had a great cheese sandwhich”, take a picture of the sandwich and post type people, but whatever takes your fancy. I use my account mainly for work-related things, but you are all welcome to use your
account as you see fit (be it posting pictures of your infected toe to endless pictures of your cute puppy). I find it most distasteful, though, when people post hateful and critical comments. Recently I have seen some posts regarding people´s shows, branding them as dated or boring and various other hurtful terms. I´m not just talking about people from audiences but entertainers about other entertainers, and it´s just not on, in my opinion. My word, I’ve seen some really bad shows, and I go away and have
a good laugh with my mates at how bad the show I’ve just seen was,. But online slander? There’s no need for it. If you don´t like the entertainment, finish your drink and leave. There is no need to assault people technologically. So if you feel you want to ridicule someone online, please think again and turn away from the keyboard. If you have been a victim of similar happenings, in the words of Taylor Swift: “Haters gonna hate hate hate, I´m just gonna shake shake shake it off.”

100 year wait for decorations
Whopping start to Christmas!
THIS week saw the starting pistol for many when it comes to Christmas. Advent calendars were opened, serious shopping began ... and up went the Christmas trees! And for residents of the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon in Brazil, they put up something a little different - the world’s biggest floating Christmas tree. It’s an enormous 85 metres high, and weighs around 500 tonnes, which really is impressive when you consider that’s equivalent to around 1,000 cars. It is decorated with over three million lights and, as you can imagine, it’s quite the tourist attraction!
SOMETHING historic will happen in Bedfordshire this Christmas as the Britain’s oldest Christmas tree will be decorated for the first time in over a century. The 30-metre-tall Wellingtonia was planted by Thomas de Grey in the grounds of Wrest Park, near Silsoe, in 1856. According to the history books, it was brought into the mansion for the family’s Christmas celebrations and re-planted once the festivities were over. English Heritage says: “This tree must have been one of the first (Christmas trees) introduced into England.” According to documents recently discoverer, the Silsoe tree was mentioned as being a fully-functioning Christmas tree in an edition of Gardener’s Chronicle, from June 1900. The article said the tree was planted in 1856 and, after growing too large to be brought indoors, has stood in the grounds for decades. John Watkins, from English Heritage, said: “It is a rare, documented example of a tree that was decorated and replanted annually. “Christmas trees were the height of festive fashion by the 1850s after being adopted by the Royal family as part of their celebrations. If anyone knows of an earlier one, we’d like to hear about it.” This year, a 3ft star will be positioned at the top of the tree and visitors will decorate the lower branches with ribbons.

Get that royal taste at T SINCE the King and I opened its doors in 1992 it has become a benchmark for quality Thai cuisine in Tenerife.
And it has now reopened in Los Cristianos, offering new heights of authenticity and good service. A typical Thai meal consists of a curry dish, soup, salad, vegetables, rice and sauces - not
always spicy! The five main tastes combine with the perfect blend of traditional herbs and spices, and the wife and I had the pleasure of dining there last night. We where met at the door by Poon the owner, and she won us over immediately with her easygoing manner, offering us a choice of dining on the outside terrace, or inside. We opted for inside, where we were introduced to our waitress,
Pen. We chose for a carafe of house wine while we perused the menu, and Poon explained a few dishes we had not tried before. To start with, we ordered the Ruem Mit, which is mixed starters for two - a combination of four starters that came with three dips: sweet chilli, sate and a sweet-and-sour sauce, and a Thai salad which was a tasty sensation of flavours. For the main course my wife

The King and I! chose Pad Thai, which comprised rice noodles, king prawns, crushed roasted peanuts and bean sprouts. I went for the fillet steak Khao Pad Prig Dang, which included yellow curry sauce and bamboo, plus Khao Pad Khai, a light, fluffy rice dish. Now unless you have tried authentic Thai food before, to explain all the tastes would take up at least a page, but suffice to say we both enjoyed all the five Thai food flavours in those three dishes. The interior of the restaurant is very cosy, with all the authentic Thai decorations, and nothing is to much trouble for the staff. They were always happy to explain the ingredients of the dishes to customers who, by the way, were from Germany, Sweden, Spain and England. When we had finally finished what I would describe as a banquet of taste, I went to the kitchen to meet Lek, the Thai chef who had the most amazing smile and happy eyes. She said she had worked for the King and I from the start in 1992, apart from three years in which she worked in a five-star hotel, where she did all the vegetable/ fruit decorations. Lek had a few in progress in the kitchen, which were amazingly intricate and too beautiful to even contemplate eating. She also told me that 99% of the produce used in the restaurant is locally sourced from farmers’
markets, and only the tofu and a few spices were flown in from Thailand for that authentic taste. When I returned
to our table, Poon came over with our dessert, which looked fantastic. It was what I can only describe as a fresh
mango cheesecake, but so much lighter and so flavoursome that we both finished it with big smiles. If you want to be treated royally, with authentic Thai food, nice ambience and a five-star service, you really should try the King and I. You can find the restaurant just along from San Telmo, in Los Cristianos. It opens from 6.30-11pm from Monday to Saturday, and will soon be opening afternoons as well. By Val Sainsbury HEALTH experts in Japan are convinced that high levels of chemicals in E-cigarettes contain 10 times the level of cancer- causing agents as regular tobacco.
The hidden dangers include formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in the vapour produced by several types of e-cigarette liquid. These latest findings will come as a blow to those in favour of the electronic devices, heralded as safer than regular cigarettes and a great boost to those wanting to give up smoking. The devices, become increasingly popular around the world, particularly among youngsters, function by heating flavoured liquid - which often contains nicotine - into a vapour that is inhaled, much like traditional cigarettes but

without the smoke. Researchers commissioned by Japan’s Health Ministry found carcinogens such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in their vapour. Formaldehyde, a substance found in building materials and embalming fluids, was present at much higher levels than carcinogens found in the smoke from regular cigarettes, according to a Japanese health official. Acetaldehyde, which occurs naturally in small quantities but is mainly used in industrial plants to make acids and other chemicals, was also found in higher levels than in normal tobacco. Dr Naoki Kunugita, of the National Institute of Public Health, Japan, said: “In one brand of e-cigarette, the team found more than 10 times the level of carcinogens contained in one regular cigarette.” He added: “When the wire which vaporises the liquid gets overheated, higher amounts of those harmful substances
seem to be produced. However, the amount of formaldehyde detected did vary through the course of analysis.” E-cigarettes are not regulated in Japan, but nicotine e-cigarettes, or so-called Electronic Nicotine Delivery System (ENDS), are subjected to the country’s pharmaceutical laws.
Although they are not as readily available in Japanese shops as they are in the US and Europe, they can be bought easily on the internet. Dr Kunugita said: “You call them e-cigarettes, but they are products totally different from regular tobacco. Our government is
now studying the possible risks associated with them, with a view to looking at how they should be regulated.” In August, the World Health Organisation (WHO) called on governments to ban the sale of e-cigarettes to minors, warning that they posed a “serious threat” to unborn babies and young people. Despite scant research on their effects, the WHO said there was enough evidence “to caution children and adolescents, pregnant women, and women of reproductive age” about e-cigarette use. This, it said, was because of the “potential for foetal and adolescent nicotine exposure having long-term consequences for brain development”. The WHO officials also said they should be banned from indoor public spaces. Supporters of e-cigarettes say the devices are a safer alternative to traditional tobacco, whose bouquet of toxic
chemicals and gases can cause cancer, heart disease and strokes. These are known to be among the leading causes of death in many countries. But opponents say the devices have been around for just a few years, and the long-term health impact from inhaling their vapour is unclear. And many former cigarette smokers, who have now given up altogether after years and years of frustration before the advent of e-cigarettes, swear by them. And big tobacco companies are snapping up producers of e-cigarettes, wary of missing out on a snowballing global market worth about £2 million. You just can’t get away from them because they are now part of everyday life. And last month, Oxford Dictionary compilers virtually legitimised them by picking “vape” - the act of smoking an e-cigarette - as their new word of the year.
If only one person is saved... TALKING therapy sessions, to give desperate people a chance to air their problems, can help reduce the risk of suicide among high-risk groups.
That was the outcome of a US study, conducted by researchers from John Hopkins University. They tracked more than 5,000 Danish people, who had attempted suicide and later received psycho-social counselling. The study found that
suicides went down by 26% after five years, compared with people who had no therapy sessions. The findings are published in Lancet Psychiatry. The participants volunteered to have sixto-10 talking therapy sessions at suicide prevention clinics in Denmark. Their outcomes were compared with around 17,000 people, who had attempted suicide but had not gone for treatment afterwards. Participants were then followed up for up to 20 years. The aim of this therapy is to give people time and space to talk about their troubles and explore difficult feelings, with a trained professional. During the first year, those who received therapy were 27% less likely to attempt suicide again. They were also
38% less likely to die of any cause. After five years, this same group saw 26% fewer suicides. Ten years later, the positive effects of the therapy were still evident. Dr Elizabeth Stuart, study co-author and associate professor in the Bloomberg School’s department of mental health, said the longterm follow-up was ideal for gathering information on which suicide prevention treatments worked.
“Our findings provide a solid basis for recommending that this type of therapy be considered for populations at risk for suicide,” she said. Her colleague, Annette Erlangsen, also from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said: “We know that people who have attempted suicide are a high-risk population, and that we need to help them. “However, we did not know what would be effective in terms of treat-
ment. “Now we have evidence that psychosocial treatment, which provides support, not medication, is able to prevent suicide in a group at high risk of dying by suicide.” They said it was likely that providing a safe, confidential place to talk was the key to successful therapy sessions. The researchers now they plan to gather more data on which specific types of therapy work best.

MI RROR, MIRROR
Just how do you find that elusive Christmas gift? By Ruth Benson
By Carl from Robot
SO your decorations are up, you’ve got your festive jumper on and, if you haven’t started yet, it’s now time to start your Christmas shopping.
THIS has nothing to to with vanity … it’s merely something you can do at home, if your brave enough.
Every year men, and women all over the world struggle to decide what to get their nearest and dearest. Do you go down the safe route with an aftershave set or perfume, maybe socks or underwear? Yahoo has looked in to what you should NOT buy this year. The first product it came up with is nothing; yes it’s actually a ball of nothing, described for the person who has everything! Next was a grow-yourown boyfriend/girlfriend kit, which is wrong on so many levels. What kind of friend would you be? They don’t need reminding they haven’t got one, and if a parent or grandparent gives this, they are basically hinting that they want you to settle down. Okay, this next one completely baffled me - period pants Basically, they are pants with slogans on relating to that time of the month. Trust me, fellas, this will not go down well. On the same theme, what about a USB tampon stick? Of course, this is on every woman’s wish list; we just love to be reminded about that
time of the month! If you are giving gifts to family and friends, you should know them well enough to get them a gift they would want to receive. Over recent years, there has been an increase in what is known as Secret Santa. For those who don’t know, this is when you draw out a name and buy that person a gift, usually within a budget. This can be interesting in the workplace because you might work with these people but wouldn’t have a clue what to get. In fact, a survey by Consumer Reports noted that 30% of presents received by work colleagues are the worst gifts. Obviously, a male worker giving underwear to a female colleague is not such a good idea. If you end up buying for your boss, your whole career could depend on it. I would suggest not buying a Dummy’s
guide or anything workrelated. Toiletries, beauty products, etc, are also to be avoided because this could imply they need to use them. At some point,we have all received a gift we don’t want. but that doesn’t mean we have to pass it on. There is nothing worse than receiving an unwanted gift. Okay, the person you gave it to may not know but, if you didn’t like it, are you sure he/she will? So what do you get the ones you love? A practical gift can cause upset, so that rules out household items. No, she doesn’t want an iron or a Hoover, any more than you want garden gloves or a carcleaning kit. Toiletries are a bit of a cop-out as well, so it’s time to be imaginative. If you are still stuck for ideas, don’t worry because next week, I will let you know the most original gifts to buy this Christmas.

It’s something I do in the salon to help clients understand why their look may or may not be doing them justice. It is so easy to pick fault with someone’s look or hairstyle. I find myself seeing a new client in a different way, instantly! But it’s up to me to advise and discuss what, if anything, needs to be changed to achieve her desired “look”. Sit in front of a long mirror at home in your regular clothes and ask yourself three simple questions: “Does my hair do me justice?” “Do I get compliments about it?” “Does my hair match
ON THE WALL...
my wardrobe?” If you answer No to any questions, it’s about time you looked at your hair in a new slant. It doesn’t have to be the most up-to-date style. It doesn’t even have to be anything complicated. It should look good, even when you haven’t spent much time on it. It should complement your clothes, matching what you want to say about yourself to the world. And even if you don’t have much time to spend on it, choosing a simple, well-cut style is
as easy as abc. Leaving it longer just to tie up because it’s easy isn’t the way to go. If you look in the mirror and, maybe, think it’s not that bad, your stylist can make simple adjustments to turn drab to fab. If you’re not into how you look, that’s your choice because there is no law to say you must be bothered with hair. But if it does matter to you, it matters to your stylists. If what we do doesn’t compliment you, we feel bad as you leave the salon. Honesty is the best policy, and there are no medals for telling someone she looks fabulous when, actually, she doesn’t! So if you can be bothered and you feel you could be ready for a change, sit yourself down in front of that big shiny thing at home and ask that fateful question: “Mirror, mirror on the wall..?

By Monica Dyson IT seems to be a sort of Marmite thing. You either love them or hate them. The saying, “Kissing a man without moustache is like eating an egg without salt”, has been attributed in turn to the Victorians, Jean Paul Satre and Jimmy Edwards.
But it most certainly came from a hirsute male because women, by and large, seem pretty indifferent to them! Yes, it’s now come to the end of Movember. This worthy cause originated in Australia in 2003 and has become a leading global organisation, committed to changing the face of men’s health throughout the world. It explains why a large proportion of our men
5th December 2014 - 11th December 2014
Check ‘em out chaps! folk are walking around with growth on their top lip. To date, over four million new moustaches have been grown throughout 21 countries. My husband has had a moustache as long as I’ve known him. I think he’s quite bemused that they have suddenly become a must-have fashion accessory, while admitting what a simple, clever, yet effective idea as an awareness campaign. The poor state of men’s health is causing great concern. One in four men will suffer some form of mental health. Male deaths from cancer, to include prostrate and testicular cancer, are 37% higher than women. And 67% of all men are overweight, their average life expectancy almost four years fewer than women. Although many women profess to hate any sort of facial hair on their menfolk, many are totally supportive and are known as Mo Sisters to their Mo Bros! The moustache is actually quite an interesting thing. There are many names for them, most
of them slang terms and reflecting its tendency to retain food and drink. Cookie-duster, crumbcatcher and tea-strainer are some of the more printable ones. Mr Tickles is another name given to the moustache, and, funnily enough, my three small grandchildren have always called my husband Grandad Tickle for obvious reasons. The moustache has long been a symbol of virility, and in Arab countries they are associated with power. In India, the bigger a policeman’s moustache, the more he is paid. Martin Luther King was voted the most influential-moustached American in history by the American Moustache Institute. And among many famous or infamous world leaders who have sported them over the centuries are Kaiser Wilhelm and his right-hand-man Otto Van Bismarck, Genghis Khan, Hitler, Stalin, Saddam Hussein, Teddy Roosevelt and Pancho Villa. Other moustaches of interest have included those of Wild Bill Hickok, Albert Einstein,
Groucho Marx, Hulk Hogan, Tom Selleck, Friedrich Nietzsche, Salvador Dali and porn star Ron Jeremy! I read somewhere that moustaches should happen either in the Seventies, in porn films or on old ladies ... I don’t know about that! Some moustaches have been more likeable than others, and the one attached to Burt Reynolds has its own Facebook page, with over 4,000 followers! The moustache grows faster than any other body hair and more in Spring and Summer than at any other time. It can grow 0.014 inches a day, five or six inches a year and is a great way to free up some valuable “me” time as shaving uses up five months of a man’s life. The world longest moustache was recorded in India at a length of 14ft at the World Beard and Moustache Championships. Facial hair has long been a bone of contention among some women, who are horrified at the thought of their man sporting a moustache. A 2008 poll suggested
that although 61% of women, when asked what they thought of them, were complimentary saying they were gentlemanly and sophisticated, 39% thought they were fools to grow one, were unhygienic and that it did nothing to enhance a man’s appearance. Although women in Western cultures generally spend a lot of their life removing unwanted body hair, there are women who have embraced the idea of remaining in their natural state. They choose not to remove it, either as a preference or as an act of defiance against what they say is an oppressive ritual - and even attempting to grow a moustache themselves, like feminist musician Jocelyn Rachel Samson. But this is not something most women go along with. The removal of body hair has become even more stringent over the past years when other parts of the body besides facial hair and underarm hair have been targeted! The Only Way is Essex has a lot to answer for! It seems that each
culture of human society has developed social norms relating to body hair for cultural, sexual, medical or religious reasons. In many Middle Eastern countries, the removal of body hair for women is considered hygienic, whereas in some European countries it is not considered important. But what does seem important at the moment is the need for awareness of the medical problems faced by many of the male population. And if it takes a bit of facial hair to bring attention to those problems, it can only be a good thing. Support your man. Don’t think that growing a moustache is going to prevent him from contacting a preventable disease, but it will increase awareness that these problems exist. Make sure he checks for symptoms (check ‘em chaps!), isn’t too embarrassed to mention anything untoward either to you or to his doctor, and embraces his new facial look. And don’t forget what Jimmy Edwards and the others said!

K9 news and events
Savanna in the lap of luxury AS we move from autumn into winter, we would like to thank everyone, from the volunteers who help daily, to the people who stop by the shelter and find a new family member. It does make all the difference, as you can see from the letter we received from Savanna, who joined us in June and is now enjoying her forever home. Dear K9, I’m writing to thank you for the wonderful care you gave to me while I was at the refuge. I was frightened I would never find a forever home, then last month at the K9 Open Day it finally happened. I chose my new Mum. She thought she chose me but it was really the other way round. Although it took a few days’ training, she learned quickly and in return, I let her know I recognise my name and come immediately I am called. I enjoy my walks and adore my food, so much that I have put on weight and needed a new collar. I was house-trained in a very short time, which is great as I progressed from the laundry room
to the living room to my favourite place, sitting on Mum’s lap. She is putty in my paws but then, I am quite a looker! Well, I’d better close as it’s time for me to sleep with Mummy on her bed. She takes up a lot of room, but I put up with it as I think it’s a security issue for her. Speaking of which, she keeps looking at me and saying something I don’t understand. “Heaven on Earth”. Let me know if you can figure that one out. Please tell my friends back at camp that I said “Hello” and try to find them great homes, too. Thank you again, you really helped to make my new Mum so happy. She needed me. Savanna xx So, one happy customer but still many who need a place to call home. And until they do, you can help support our cause by visiting the K9 Shop in Alcala Plaza, open each day from 10am until 2pm, except Sunday. If anyone wants to donate something for the shop and it needs collecting, please contact 611 352 881 or 646 561 035 to arrange collection. We have a clothing stall at Alcala market each Monday, and a second-hand bookstall each Thursday at Fañabe Market. Both
are mornings only. All monies raised go towards the care of the many dogs and cats at the K9 refuge. ‘Swallows’ can contact Jim on 600 314 712 and arrange to meet - he will bring a car full of books one euro each, or three for two euros. He also has DVDs at one euro each to help while away your winter months on the Island. Finally, K9 extend a giant heartfelt thank to our wonderful donors and volunteers. Please know that we do appreciate your generous and selfless contributions. The support we receive from our community does not have to be financial. We appreciate your time in exercising the dogs, or donating a bag of dog or cat food, which can make a huge difference to the animals in our care. This message is just a simple reminder that without YOU, K9 Animal Refuge would not be possible. We always strive to do our best and see that all animals in our care, no matter how big or small, will be loved and looked after both physically and emotionally until a home is found for them. If you would like to visit or have the time to walk a dog, the kennels are open EVERY day from 11am until 2pm. The number is 667 638 468.
Arona Lions in a festive mood THE Arona Lions Club International, Las Galletas and Costa del Silencio, still have tickets available for their Christmas Party next Saturday (13th Dec) at Westhaven Bay, Silencio. It starts at 7pm for a 7.30pm sit-down to a three-course meal with nibbles and Cava to start, and coffee and cake to finish. Your host will be the Lions’ own Derrick,
and entertainment will be provided by Cy Benson, Suzie Moore and Gary J. Tickets, costing 25 euros (reduction for under-12s) are available from our Coral Mar Square shop, or from any member, or call Vicki on 628 799 901. The Lions also have an afternoon of live entertainment the following day (Sunday, 14th Dec) from 2pm until 8pm at The Winter
Gardens’ Rendezvous Bar and Bistro, on Golf del Su . Derrick will again be your host, and all acts are yet to be confirmed. There will be a Raffle, Tombola , plus other events, and a BBQ will be supplied by the venue for a small cost. So please come along and help support a worthy cause so that we can continue to help people in need.

A rugged X-perience!
By Jav SEAT’S new Leon X-Perience goes against the grain for the Spanish car-makers, who don’t really specialise in rugged models.
Their Altea Freetrack and Alhambra 4x4s are among the company’s rare excursions into those go-anywhere machines. That image will change in 2016 with the arrival of Seat’s first compact SUV, but before then, their new four-wheeldrive version of the Leon ST estate is intended to tease the market in anticipation. It is also a second range-topper for the expanded Leon family, which will offer a more practical alternative to the sporty Cupra-badged variants. Like Cupra, Seat intend to develop X-Perience as a sub-brand, so you can reckon on more models getting the rugged make-over in time, starting with a pair of two-wheel-drive estatebodied Leons next summer. The X-Perience, produced alongside the
regular Leon at Seat’s Martorell factory in Spain, is 15mm higher to provide greater ground clearance. And with bigger wheels and tyres bolted on, tit puts this new model 27mm higher than the ST. Apportioning power to all four wheels is a fourwheel-drive system, allied to two electronic differential lock systems, and an electronic stability control function, specially calibrated for off-road driving. It is a fraction longer than the ST at 45.43mm, thanks to the enlarged bumpers, which have protective plastic skidplates and additional black plastic cladding within the wheel-arches and along the sills to give it a suitably-toughened appearance. The boot space re-
mains the same as the ST at 587 litres - with the rear seats in place - expanding to 1470 litres with the bench collapsed. The X-Perience comes in two trim levels, SE and SE Technology, and a choice of a 2.0 TDI in two outputs. Both engine variants offer identical fuel consumption and CO2 emissions at a claimed 57.6mpg (combined) and 129g/km. The four-wheel-drive system and beefed-up bodywork adds more than 120kg to the kerb weight, which means the fuel economy is roughly 10mpg below Seat’s claims for the equivalent ST. The entry-level version is an SE 2.0 TDI 150, equipped with a sixspeed manual gearbox.
It costs £24,385 and produces 148bhp and 236lb ft. Above that sits the SE Technology variant, equipped with the same engine and costing nearly two grand more.. The range-topper is a more powerful 2.0 TDI 184, which produces 181bhp and 280lb ft, with dual-clutch DSG transmission, and will set you back £28,870. By comparison, an ST estate in FR trim with the same engine and gearbox would cost £25,165, although Seat point out that the specification of the X-Perience includes more kit as standard. The range-topping diesel variant is equipped with Seat’s Drive Profile function. That enables the driver to vary the characteristics of
the electro-mechanical steering, throttle mapping and shift points of the dual-clutch gearbox in four modes: Eco, Comfort, Normal and Sport. The driving position remains much like an estate car, and while most of the cabin is carried over straight from the standard Leon, there are some attractive, interior-colour combinations on offer, plus some bold badging to distinguish the car’s rugged credentials. The upgrade to the graphics on the topspec car’s infotainment screen is a welcome addition as the new version has easier-to-read satnav maps. There’s a touch of telltale diesel chatter on start-up but, under normal driving conditions,
the refinement from the powerplant is good. In both outputs, the engine feels punchy and capable throughout the rev range, so much so that it’s hard to see a case for spending the extra on the more powerful one. And although the Skoda Octavia Scout is a rival from within the same group, Seat highlights the Vauxhall Insignia Country Tourer and Volvo V40 Cross Country as cars from which they hope to tempt buyers away. Seat believe the XPerience will account for less than 10% of Leon sales and, with the marque currently basking in its strongest UK sales figures yet, that should give them around 2,500 units a year. The X-Perience’s allwheel-drive traction will appeal to those who want to feel safe and comfortable in all road conditions, and the rugged appearance could attract those who fancy a hint of crossover styling in a conventional body style. Seat feel the most popular variant will be the mid-range SE Technology model with the manual gearbox, which strikes a balance between a decent spec and a more attractive price than the DSGequipped range-topper.
Trafico’s letter easily dealt with
By Emma at Motorworld
TRÁFICO officials are again sending out letters about cars over 10 years old which are still registered to an individual - and still on Tráfico’s system.
This is causing quite a panic as owner-drivers assume they have to do something about the letters. But it actually depends
on the circumstances in which individuals find themselves. The letter explains that you are shown on their system as the registered keeper of a vehicle over 10 years old. It states the car details, along with your details and any relevant information they hold regarding the current ITV and insurance or the lack of either or both!. From here we have two different approaches: if the car is still yours, all you need do is check that the following details are correct: *The expiry date of the current ITV is up to date (check your Ficha Técnica for this). *Technical details of the vehicle
*Registered keeper’s notification address, very important to ensure all future notifications are received promptly *Registered vehicle address If you notice any errors, the next step is to fill in the appropriate information update form, which can be obtained on Tráfico’s website. Fill in the section relating to the information you wish to update. You would also need proof of identity, a copy of the letter you have received, together with supporting documents to prove the change or update of details. This would be a copy of the vehicle’s Ficha Técnica for the ITV, or a certificate of Empa-
dronamiento for the address change, or current insurance receipt. The relevant documentation can then be presented in Tráfico, sent via post to Tráfico’s PO Box in Madrid, or presented in your local Post Office, although I don’t know whether you’ll be charged a The second situation is when the car is not yours for any of the following reasons: *It no longer exists wrttten-off in an accident, perhaps *Taken to the scrapyard and scrapped officially *It was lost/stolen and you do not know if it is still on the road *The owner is dead *It was sold some time ago and you assumed the new owner had
transferred the paperwork *It was never owned by the person to whom the letter was addressed If any of these apply, you would need to fill in the appropriate special “baja” form, and provide proof of identity, along with a copy of the letter you have received and present it all in Tráfico for them to process the de-registration. If, however, you still have the car but wish to scrap it, take it to a scrapyard and then have it de-registered in the normal way. The “baja” form can be obtained from Tráfico’s website and would need to be filled in fully, also explaining why the “baja” needs to take place, the options on
the form are: *The car no longer exists *It is lost/stolen and you have no proof it is still on the road *It was handed into a scrapyard *The owner is dead *The vehicle was sold a while ago and the transfer was never carried out *The vehicle was sold a while ago and the transfer was carried out *The vehicle has never belonged to the person to whom the letter is addressed *Other reasons, please specify If you receive such letter and are confused or worried, call in to our offices or give me a ring and I will endeavour to help.

Now this defeat hurt
By Roscoe
CD Lugo 1 CD Tenerife 0 YOU get use to losing when you support Tenerife. You get use to drab, pointless, away matches. You even get use to the referee being bias to the mainland side.
But you never get use to that feeling of losing because of the “curse of the old boy”. And how many times does it happen? Last week, I gave Iriome the big build-up - and he repays me by scoring the winner three minutes from time. The Icod forward had a fine match and, in some ways, it was fitting that he got the goal. But boy, it hurt! At first glance, it looked like an error from rookie goalie Carlos Abad. He was caught in no-man’s-land from an inswinging corner. But after a few replays, it was clear to see he had little chance. It was a corner straight off the training ground, and it was perfectly executed. And it killed Tenerife.
They had fought so hard - and without a player for half-an-hour. Clown referee Jose Lesma, who has “previous” with Tenerife, totally lost his head. He showed 12 yellow cards, sent off Aridane for the softest of reasons (the decision has since been overturned on appeal), did the same to Lugo’s Samu late on and, generally, embarrassed himself. You may remember him showing more cards than Paul Daniels and sending off Ricardo in

the match at Recreativo last season. He did a similar thing against Las Palmas at the start of the season. He spoiled what was a decent encounter, and Tenerife were bright throughout. Lugo were better in the first half but, strangely enough, Tenerife improved after Aridane’s dismissal. They showed the fight and spirit that can exist in this side. The defeat puts Tenerife back into the drop zone, but there are grounds for optimism. Draw

This week it’s a battle of the old side for a few Tenerife lads. Manager Alvaro Cervera had a spell at Racing Santander, as did Vitolo and Quique Medina. Vitolo joined Racing at the start of the 2005 season and enjoyed two La Liga campaigns. He played 66 times before moving on. He said this week: “I liked my time at Racing and had a couple of good seasons. But then a few things went wrong, and these things happen.” Cervera was at Racing only briefly during the worst of the club’s financial woes. They are coming out of a dark hole and are proof, along with the likes of Portsmouth, that not all foreign investment is welcome. The Tenerife manager, who has problems of his own, admitted in the press conference this week - the first he has given for two months - that the team are not where he wants them to be. “I didn’t expect us to be in the bottom four in December, that is true,” he said. “We’ve had problems getting the first-choice side out. I thought that if we had the team, then we would do well. “Look at Uli Davila. We chose Davila as the type of player we thought would fit. We knew we would have a competi-
tive defence when we brought in Unai and Hugo Alvarez. Then in midfield, with the addition of Vitolo, we would be more consistent and up front, Diego Ifrán would replace Ayoze Perez. “Then there is a position that we have - which player to put behind Ifran? We had been using Aridane or another player, but we thought Uli would fit in.” In essence, he saw the Mexican as the final piece of the jigsaw and, in many ways, so did the fans. But he arrived short of match-fitness, and then Ifran picked up a knee injury. “Davila has taken far longer than we thought to settle in, and a suspension hasn’t helped. But this weekend, he will have a chance to start over. He will start and start as the lone striker.” There was some good news for Cervera this week: Aitor Sanz should be fit to return to midfield after three weeks out. He has been missed. And it seems that some progress is being made on the transfer front. Tenerife are desperate for a new, senior keeper, and it looks like they are about to sign Dani Hernandez. The 29-year-old is currently second-choice cat at Valladolid. He has
17 caps for Venezuela and, at 6ft 5ins, he is tall enough. He has spent a fair bit of time playing in Greece, and at the lower levels in Spain. His brother Jonay, you may remember, played left-back for Tenerife in Segunda B a couple of seasons ago. Finally, this week, the strange story of Juan Carlos Garcia has taken another turn. You may recall he was signed on a season-long loan from Wigan, only for Tenerife to discover he is a centre-back and not a leftback. Tenerife tried to send him back, but the contract was signed. Then, with Tenerife needing a new striker to replace the injured Ifran, they signed Davila. This meant they had one too many overseas players, so they unregistered Garcia. Still with me? The Honduran has stayed in Santa Cruz and, by all accounts, has been a real pro. Cervera said: “His attitude has been perfect. He is a really great guy. He has trained hard and is a real professional. It’s just a shame what happened.” It is whispered that he has been excellent in training and could now be registered in January. That would mean one of the overseas players leaving. No pressure on Uli Davila, then!

Playboys slam the door! O U R PL A C E Playboys upset the applecart on Friday by ending Trap Door’s 10-match winning streak.
Playboys in their next league match. This Division is sure to go right down to the wire, and don’t write off Gaffers A, either. They claimed a hard fought 5-3 win at Emerald Lounge, with Dennis beating his own highest checkout with a magical 144.
But the door is still ajar for four teams at the top of Division 1 after the latest round of matches, with just three points separating them. The crucial result came at Legends in Los Cristianos, as Fluff’s Friday became one to remember for the Playboys. Despite Jim firing in a 180, Trap Door’s fantastic run came to a halt with a 5-3 defeat and not a drop of Jager was left! Emerald Shamrocks, who remain top by a point, will face the

2. Chipeque Chippers matched that winning margin at Ourplace Playgirls, while The Palms went one better by thumping Phoenix Flights 7-1. The Rebels entertained Marilyns and swapped places in the table after the Abrigos side notched a 5-3 win. Target Army have been breathing down the neck of Phoenix Bar for a few weeks, and they finally made their move up to second place in the Premier League with a 5-3 victory. Fair play to the Boothen boys, though, as they pushed Target all the way and just missed out on the trebles leg. It might get even worse for Phoenix in the coming weeks.

It’s cup week, and the John Lowe team handicap competition moves into the next stage with some mouth-watering fixtures. A giant-killing is sure to follow!

To be frank, deVaney leads! IT’S great being able to manage the Premier League’s superstars. But when they all have a quiet week, it makes point-scoring in the Oasis Fm Fantasy League extremely difficult. As a wannabe manager, it makes for a difficult decision: can you afford to drop them, or transfer them out and bring in somebody who could be about to start a run of form. Who would be a real manager? This week there was a
double set of matches and it really tested the skill of the managers to keep an eye on a few factors. Wayne Rooney’s late collision with the advertising board over the weekend ruled him out of the midweek win against Stoke, and quite a few managers may have missed that. Ditto Diego Costa’s lucky yellow card - it should have been a red - which saw him miss the Tottenham stroll. Judging by some of
the heavy scores, Sergio Aguero was a popular skipper on Wednesday night, and his 32 points made all the difference. Also, I wonder how many Southampton players will be getting chopped. They are starting to struggle, and it could be time to go another way. There has been a change at the top of the league this week, Warren Wilson’s under-performing Crossfire Hurricanes allowing Frank
Devaney’s Toffees to steal a march on him. Frank has put a little bit of daylight between his team and the chasing pack with a juicy, 25-point cushion. But there is now a decent sized chasing pack, and a lot will change between now and the FA Cup 3rd round in the first weekend of January. Hat-tip goes to Ray Malone and his Inter Malone team for an excellent 85 points, while young Mikey Geraghty
is into the top 10 after a fine 83 points. But there are only 100 points separating the top 25, and in Fantasy
terms that is nothing. Couple of good weeks and well-placed captains’ armbands can see everything change.

Ross is the boss at Palms YOU can sometimes be on a bad run of form, yet all it takes is one result to get your season up and running.
And that is exactly what Dreamers A will hope happens in the Direct Telecom Pool League. On paper, they are a good, solid team and this week they showed what they are capable of. Palms A are hard to beat at home, but Steve and his team were in no mood to leave with anything but three points. These two teams always have a great match and this was no different. Both teams played good pool, but Dreamers took their chances a little better. Ross was in fine form for Dreamers, while Penguin had a stinker for Palms, losing all three frames. In fact, on paper it was a strange result as Palms got two 7-ball wins, but ended up 8-4 losers! Inn the Pink A have been playing well in recent weeks and are worth their current third spot. But they had to work hard on Tuesday against Ten-
erife Hammers C. The early games seemed to go Pink’s way but Hammers C got it back, going into the last session at 4-4. John and Rick won for Pink A, only for Hammers C to force another frame back. But in the battle of the seniors, Wilf was too strong for Ken and took the frame and points for the visitors. It was business as usual at the top of the table, with both teams recording routine wins and mirroring each other’s scores. Current leaders Gaffers A hosted Phoenix Potters and, though the OAPs from Los Abrigos put up a fight, it was a straight-forward 9-3 win. Their rivals, Tenerife Hammers A, travelled up to Chayofa to take on Treehouse A, who many thought were capable of pulling off a shock. And they might well have with a bit more luck. However, the Hammers are good and knew how to dig deep to earn themselves another win, despite new captain Paul losing twice in an off-night Terrace Bar B bagged themselves another success as they continued their

fine season, bouncing back from last week’s heavy defeat. This week’s opponents were Exiles B, and the teams were evenly matched over the first few games. But Finn and his team finished strongly in the final few frames. Waterfall Rebels are also starting to find their feet after a slow start. A home game this week matched them against Palms Bar B, who are no pushovers. But they were off-form and
couldn’t find an extra gear. The Rebels played some good pool, though, and could now start a push up the table. In Division Two, the top two sides were not in action this week, which allowed the chasing pack to close the gap a little. Inn the Pink B, one of those teams who are sitting pretty in fourth spot, were pitted against in-form Tenerife Pool Tables, but on the night they couldn’t replicate that form. Pink B took the early frames and never looked back, earning full points from the encounter. James Place, who have started to put a run of results together after a slow start, moved closer to their rivals this week. They
played Treehouse B, who made life difficult for them, and it was certainly a case of James Place having to earn the win. The Treehouse team have just one win under their belts so far, but if they continue to play like this, another one will not be too far away. Next Door bar managed to improve their points tally by beating Sporting Jester B. The match could have gone any way as a last-minute change of venue meant neither team had home or table advantage. But Next Door settled well and, once into their stride, the win was always on the cards. Shock of the night came in the game between Picasso’s A and Gaffers B. The latter team, with promotion ambitions, have been

playing well. They would have looked at Picasso’s league position and thought they were on for another win. But Picasso’s are no mugs and, having played some excellent pool, were good value for their 9-3 win, which sent their opponents back to Gaffers with tails between legs. This week sees the draw for the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup, the first round being played on 13th January. It’s an open draw and normally there are a few giant-killings! Finally, we bring you sad news of the passing of Alex Thompson. The popular Glaswegian played for the Phoenix and was a singles runner-up a few years ago, losing against Jambo in a fine final at Leonardos. On Tuesday, plenty of sides marked Alex’s passing with a toast and a shot, and the league passed its sympathies. Alex is pictured here getting his runnersup trophy from then Leonardos manager Mark and league chairman Roscoe.

By Adi Benson THE festive period is one of my favourite times of the year. Yes, there is the obvious food and drink and being merry, but we also get spoilt from a football point of view.
This week has started things off nicely and by the time the final game is played on Monday night, all the Premier League teams will have played three games in nine days, and this is where the league really starts to take shape. Newcastle v Chelsea After a recent run of good form, Newcastle have slowed a little, a loss and a draw bringing their unbeaten run to an end. They will want to get back to winning ways, but they face an uphill task against the current league leaders and title favourites. They they are good at home and if they attack, they may get some joy. Chelsea are still unbeaten and six points clear. I don’t believe they can go through the season unbeaten, and this busy festive period could see them suffer their first defeat. It might do them good and take a little pressure off. But it will not happen in the North East. Prediction: Away win Hull v West Brom Hull are out of the relegation zone on goaldifference only. I have said it before and I will no doubt say it again, but you have to beat the teams around you to survive, and this is one of those games. Hull showed some fight at Everton on Wednesday to earn a fine point. The Baggies have lost two on the bounce now and have slipped back towards the bottom of the league - a slide they need to halt. They are not conceding many goals, and they frustrated Arsenal, in particular, last weekend. But they need to show something offensively
55 CW
Newcastle face a tough challenge
and this may be the match which sees them coming out of their shell. Prediction: Away win Liverpool v Sunderland With two wins under their belt in a matter of days, Liverpool’s tails are up and they need to keep the momentum going. So a game against Sunderland should be the ideal fixture. Gerrard looked fresh after a rest, and this may be a tactic Rodgers has to employ now to get the best from his skipper. They still need a striker to start scoring, though! Sunderland looked good against Chelsea, but they couldn’t reproduce their defensive form against Man City in midweek. They know they have to take the game to Liverpool and produce good, counter-attacking football. Maybe they will bring a beach ball as well! Prediction: Home win QPR v Burnley All three promoted sides are in the drop zone, and two of them clash this weekend. It’s
far too early to talk of relegation six-pointers, but for both sides it’s a massive match. A good win against Leicester had QPR. nice and confident, but they crashed down to earth midweek with a defeat against Swansea. They are rubbish away but look a different monster in West London. Burnley are unbeaten in four games, now that Danny Ings (pictured) has found his scoring boots. If they could pick up a win here and other results went their way, they could climb as high as 13th place in the league - and that would be a real platform for the Xmas period. Prediction: Home win Stoke v Arsenal Stoke will feel a little aggrieved after suffering two losses in a row. They played well against Liverpool and Man Utd and were unlucky not to take at least a draw in both games. Maybe this game will go their way and see them beating one of the perceived big clubs. They know how to battle and will make things tough.
Arsenal are not at their attacking best at the minute, apart from Alexis Sanchez, but he cannot continue to carry the rest of the team. Injuries are again causing problems for the Gunners and, with games coming thick and fast, they need the team to pull their weight. Prediction: Home win Spurs v Crystal Palace Spurs are playing a good game of win one, lose one so, following that pattern, they should get three points here. They will be happy to be at home as their form on the road is not good, but they are starting to score goals. Even Soldado has got on the scoresheet recently. Palace are flattering to deceive this season. They pick up a decent result and you think it is a step forward for them, but then they take two steps back. They are another team who need to put a run of results together, and the next few weeks are likely to be make-or-break for Neil Warnock’s team. Prediction: Home win
Man City v Everton City are now just six points behind Chelsea after their rivals dropped points last weekend, and the gap looks small compared with recent weeks. They have a few injury worries in defence, but Sergio Aguero keeps getting better and his goals are going a long way to chasing Chelsea down. Everton are struggling with form, which is even more apparent after last season’s efforts. The key is Lukaku, who could score goals for fun when he was on loan. But since the move was made permanent, they have dried up. It is looking like a mid-table finish for the Toffees. Prediction: Home win West Ham v Swansea A lesson in patience has been proved with West Ham this season. The fans wanted Big Sam out, but the owners have given him time and are now reaping the rewards. They did shrewd business over the summer with the players they bought in, and they look like a real team, prepared
to die for each other. European football next season could be on the cards. Swansea are there or thereabouts themselves, and Garry Monk is doing a great job. They are not a side packed with superstars, but they work hard for each other and, again, have a great team spirit. They are also direct competition for a European spot. This could be the game of the weekend. Prediction: Draw Aston Villa v Leicester Villa have dug deep and managed to halt the slide they were on, and you have to wonder if that coincides with Roy Keane leaving the coaching staff. They are getting players back from injury and will feel they can now return to winning games, with an eye on a top-10 finish. They’ll be looking forward to this one. The Foxes are in real trouble, rooted to the bottom of the table, lacking in confidence and just cannot buy a win. Nigel Pearson must now earn his money trying to keep them up, but they are in danger of being cast adrift. Their early-season form is what they need to rediscover. Prediction: Away win Southampton v Man Utd Saints had been going well and were flying high in second spot until this week, but they hadn’t played any of the big clubs, which was to be the acid test. So far, they haven’t passed after losing to Man City, then Arsenal - and now Man Utd. But I have a feeling they can win this one, although they need Pelle to get back to scoring goals. United are on a run of four back-to-back wins and they know that a fifth victory here will lift them into third spot. However, they have an injury-ravaged squad - and a third game in seven days could be too much for them. Prediction: Home win
