Pink-clad fund-raisers on 10th annual Walk for Life WHATEVER the weather, it will definitely be sunglasses all round on Sunday when an anticipated 3,000 fund-raisers take to the streets… bedecked in bright pink as usual!

Yes, it’s the annual Walk for Life (Carrera por la Vida), and the 2014 parade celebrates 10 years of collecting money to fight the most serious curse of all to good health: breast cancer research, and raising hope for victims and their families alike. This extra-special milestone, which attracted more than 2,000 strollers last year, almost certainly means that even more supporters, families and friends will want to take part in this incredible, noholds-barred extravaganza, It starts at 10.30am at the Plaza CC City Centre in Arona (adjacent to Hotel Siesta), and the extended, six-kilometre route takes the walkers to Adeje’s Plaza de San Sebastián, in La Caleta. Final details of Tenerife’s biggest charity event of all were announced at Tuesday’s press conference in Los Cristianos Cultural Centre. In attendance were the respective Mayors of Adeje and Arona, together with representatives from the Spanish Cancer Association and Amate, who joined Walk for Life founder Brigitte Gypen at the top table. Both Mayors, Arona’s Francisco José Niño and Adeje’s José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, congratulated Brigitte on her decade-long work in setting up and continuing an event which grows and grows, becoming even more spectacular by the year and bringing in much-needed funds for the worthiest of causes. They also spoke of the unifying nature of the walk, and Brigitte added that there were par-

ticipants - residents and tourists from many different countries - who were eagerly looking forward to walking together in harmony. Rodriguez Fraga said: “This is an event based on solidarity that brings together businesses, institutions, persons and organisations, and also helps makes the issue a visible one.

“It also brings more than a touch of humanity to a tourist zone.” However, Arona’s José Niño felt it went deeper than that. “This is about more than uniting Arona and Adeje,” he said. “This is about all of us, together!” And he promised we would see “a spectacular pink wave” this year . In addition to the pink

strollers, events will be taking place both at the start of the walk and at the end, including live music and entertainment, a steel band along the way to keep the walking pace up, courtesy buses for those unable to manage the full distance, and many surprises. Each person who registers, from 9.30am (get

there early), will receive some “pink” goodies, including the chance of getting a set of pink wings from TUI UK and Ireland. Walkers will also be given a ticket, which will enter them into a draw featuring a host of excellent prizes, including weekends in many quality hotels in South Tenerife, as well as a

Fred. Olsen cruise for two people. And if you like, you can also fill in an “I am walking for...” placard, which enables you name a person or association you are supporting. There will prizes available for the best pink male and female fancy-dress costumes, and even one for the best-dressed pet! Brigitte also reminded participants to ensure they have adequate sun-cream - and, just as important, that there will be drinks and fruit available along the way to refresh them. This 10th anniversary Walk for Life has already inspired several “pink” spin-off events, including Golf for Life at the nine-hole Los Palos course near Guaza, a Latin-American dance festival at the Auditorio Infanta Leonor, in Los Cristianos, a Soul for Life music festival at El Medano, which delighted many music fans, and last Sunday’s Cycling for Life. So if you want to play your part without walking, come along and cheer on the parade, buy whatever you can afford to help swell the funds … and enjoy a colourful morning out.

Whale of a problem THERE are plenty of unanswered questions surrounding the shock discovery of a whale on a Canarian beach this week.

Tenerife Cabildo’s Environment Department has confirmed that a a pygmy sperm whale was found on a beach at Barranco de La Torre, just three weeks after another whale washed up on another beach. It is unclear what caused the beaching, but fingers are being pointed at the oil exploration off the coasts of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Natalia Evora, Cabildo Environment Minister said: “Just like with the

last case, the whale’s body showed no outward signs of trauma. Normally, these events are caused by maybe a ship collision or a propeller hit. This is the usual cause of death.” This week’s whale discovery, off the east coast of Fuerteventura - just opposite an oil exploration site - certainly looks fishy. Evora added: “These events bring a big concern, although at present it is not possible to establish a direct link between the two whales, let alone any connection with the exploration. “It is necessary to have more scientific analysis before we can properly find out what has happened.” The whale found this week was small in size, at 1.76m long and less

than 200kg, which suggests it was an infant. The Environmental Agency moved the body to the Biological Station at La Oliva. It will remain in cold storage until the team from the Institute of Animal Health and Food Safety (IUSA), directed

by Antonio Fernández, Professor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), conducts an autopsy. A preliminary report issued by the same body on the whale stranded on 20th November showed that it was an

adult male and weighed over 300kg. Initial findings of that pygmy sperm whale showed: “It had a serious chronic disease of the central nervous system, and this was the main cause of death. The whale’s immune system was so compromised by this infection that death occurred shortly after the stranding on the beach.” Scientists, institutions and citizens have warned repeatedly of the potential damage that oil exploration can have on the whale population. The three authorised exploratory oil wells pose serious risks to populations of the 28 species of cetaceans in the area. These include some protected species, which are closely moni-

tored. Scientists have, repeatedly, denounced the lack of adequate assessment of the effects of underwater noise pollution in the drilling area. And it’s worth pointing out that the pygmy sperm whale is among the species protected by the European Union through the Habitats Directive. The pygmy sperm species has a unique head, and its mouth is in a lower position than most whales, which gives it a look not dissimilar to that of a shark. The dorsal fin is small and, unusually, in the centre of the body. Adult pygmy sperms have an average length of three metres and, though it is native to our waters, sightings are rare.

Russians’ Moscow to Tenerife

IN the past four years, Tenerife has become the go-to place for those seeking warmer climes, and there has been a notable increase in Russian visitors.

Official figures out this week show that in 2013, more than 180,000 Russians visited Tenerife - an increase on the previous year of over 32%. And 97% of them travelling to the Canary

Islands chose Tenerife. Despite this upward trend, though, the current economic and political situation in Russia has slowed this year’s increase and officials expect the number of Canaries’ visitors to actually drop in 2014. Nationally, the number of Russian tourists is down 8.7% so far compared with 2013, but Tenerife is just 2.7% lower. By the end of October, more than 152,000 travelled here. But Miguel Becerra, Tenerife Cabildo’s co-

ordinator of Tourism and Strategic Projects, was happy enough with the numbers. “The Russian market is the fourth-largest on our Island, with a share of 3.7%, so it remains an important segment,” he said. “And it’s not only the overall figure. Russian spending is 22% higher than the average spending of tourists who come to the Island. In fact, 6.8% of current revenue from tourism in Tenerife comes from Russia.” The message is sim-

ple: the Russians spend on holiday, and Becerra added: “It’s clear that we are having it better than other parts of Spain. It’s tough at the moment for Russians, and those who want to come on holiday. “The economic situation in Russia is hard. There is the conflict with Ukraine and sanctions, falling oil prices, the bankruptcy of some tour operators and the devaluation of the rouble. “This devaluation will hit resorts, as we are seeing in other destina-

tions such as Turkey or Egypt.” Interestingly, the decline in 2014 of Russian tourists here is highest at the top end. Bookings in 5-star hotels are down 20%, while bookings in 3-star hotels and apartments are actually slightly up. “One thing that has made the Russian tourism work well is the fact that they feel comfortable here,” said Becerra. “They like the facilities. This aspect is still working, we are a welcoming destination and we have a lot of tourist

loyalty.” So even though money is tight, Russians still want their Tenerife holiday, even if they have to downgrade a bit. And Becerra is optimistic about the future of this market, saying: “The Island has great interest. I think, like everything, there will be a realignment and consolidation, and it’s wrong to expect the same growth as in previous years. But I do not think we will get a crash. We expect the number of visitors to stabilise.”

King’s brother-in-law is nearing fraud trial IÑAKI Urdangarin, husband of Spanish royal Cristina de Borbón, could be standing trial over the Nóos case next year.

It involves millions of euros in embezzled money, earned through no-bid contracts with the Balearics and Va-

lencia regional governments. Anti-corruption attorney Pedro Horrach has complied a 500page document which blames King Felipe VI’s brother-in-law for Nóos, and acquits Cristina of any criminal wrongdoing. The report, which investigating judge José Castro will receive on Tuesday, asks for prison terms of 18 years

for Urdangarin and 11 years for Jaume Matas, former premier of the Balearic Islands, under whose government the public contracts were awarded. The report also asks for an 11-year sentence for former Balearics premier Jaume Matas The judge must now dissect the report before deciding whether to put Cristina de Borbón on trial as well

King bans royal freebies THE Spanish royal family have been explicitly forbidden from accepting favours or expensive gifts “that could jeopardise the dignity of their institutional tasks”.

The ban has been imposed by King Felipe VI, who says royals may not accept favours such as free flights or loans at low or zero interest. They are also banned from accepting presents with a high economic value, or gifts given for commercial or advertising purposes. The move is part of a campaign by the new monarch to clean up the royal household’s image following months of low popularity ratings. He also wants to distance the royals from the numerous corruption cases affecting Spanish politics, often involving bribes for favours - two leading examples being Gürtel and Púnica. When he took over from his father Juan Carlos in June, King Felipe said in his inaugural speech: “The Crown must constantly earn citizens’ appreciation, respect and trust. Today, more than ever, citizens are rightly demanding that public officials lead by example.” One of his first initiatives was to bar members of the royal family from working in the private sector. This was interpreted as a way of

preventing more cases like the one that ensnared his sister, Cristina de Borbón, whose husband Iñaki Urdangarin faces criminal charges in connection with his private business dealings. The King also announced that the royal family’s accounts will undergo external audits to increase transparency. Under this new gift ban, Felipe’s closest relatives will no longer be able to accept the kind of presents his father did when a group of businessmen presented Juan Carlos with a yacht worth 18m euros. The former monarch also received two Ferraris from the prime minister of the United Arab Emirates. One

of them was recently handed over to the National Heritage Foundation, and the second one “will be soon,” according to royal palace sources. The new rule does not prevent the royals from accepting “courtesy gifts,” and a palace spokesman refused to say what the price limit for these other presents might be, saying it would be left instead to “common sense.” Since the proclamation of Felipe VI, the royal family has been reduced to his parents Juan Carlos and Sofía, his wife Letizia and his daughters Leonor and Sofía. Felipe’s sisters, Elena and Cristina, are no longer considered part of the royal family.

for alleged tax evasion and money-laundering through a “front” company in which she and her husband were partners. Horrach and Castro had a public fall-out over the Princess’s role in the affair; the former has always defended her innocence, while the latter forced Cristina to answer questions in court in February - an unprecedented situation for a member of Spain’s royal family. Urdangarin created the Nóos Institute in 1999 with his partner, Diego Torres, who had been one of his teachers at Madrid’s ESADE business school and is now also a target in the investigation. The non-profit entity, set up as a consulting group, began organising sporting events and tourism conferences for the Balearic Islands and Valencia regional gov-

ernments after winning no-bid contracts. Urdangarin faces eight criminal charges, including embezzling around 6m euros in public money. The trial is scheduled to begin

a year from now. The investigation began in 2010 as an offshoot of the Palma Arena case. This involved a sports arena, built over-budget by the government of Jaume Matas.

Adeje Mayor singing praises of European Citizens group

The editor says...

Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

Be honest… who really does enjoy the Xmas songs? CHRISTMAS songs. Two words that strike fear into the heart of any radio DJ. The oncea-year classics that give has-been pop stars five minutes back in the limelight, and a boost to the bank balance. The staple at every office party and the oxygen behind the Christmas knees-up. Stick on Mariah Carey and watch the room explode. And boy, do I hate them. Before you start shouting “Bah, Humbug” at me, it’s not the fact that they are Christmas songs; it’s just that they are not very good songs. I like Christmas and see it more as a reward for a hard year’s work rather than a religious thing. But that’s a story for another column. First of all, a Christmas song kills a career. Take Michael Barratt, or Shakin Stevens to give him his working title. He has had a remarkable 33 UK Top 40 singles. That’s only three fewer than Tom Jones. He’s had four No.1s but he is remembered only for Merry Christmas Everyone.

That song finished him, like a typecast actor. Ditto, Cliff Richard and Paul McCartney never recovered from the Frog Chorus. That song single-handedly ended the “who is the best Beatle”? argument. And it’s George Harrison, before you ask. Talking of Beatles, John Lennon’s Christmas effort made you reach for the bucket in the Eighties and it sounds even worse 30 years on. And why don’t we ever have any new Christmas tracks? Some have argued that the X Factor is to blame as it always has the Christmas No.1 - and there may be some merit in that. All we seem to get these days is third-rate cover versions. Honestly, if they weren’t Christmas songs, how many of them would you actually want to hear? There are exceptions, of course, and in some ways, The Fairytale Of New York gets better with age. But like white Christmases, I wonder if the festive song will soon be a thing of the past?

ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga was the key speaker at last week’s European Citizens’ meeting, held in Los Cristianos Cultural Centre.

The Mayor, welcomed in Spanish and English by association president Carol Salisbury, addressed the meeting briefly. He outlined why he is so committed to the advancement of multiculturalism and harmonious co-existence, reflected in the longterm Adeje Convivencia programme. He said his vision for Adeje was that it would become “a paradigm for the rest of the world, an example of how the global village can and should work in harmony”. Rodríguez Fraga praised the group for bringing European citizens in South Tenerife together because, he said, it was important that we all worked together for the future. “In Adeje, we have people who have settled from almost 120 nationalities, and we are

working to make sure we look ahead together. An association such as this plays an important role and this is your home, the home for all our residents in South Tenerife.” He added: “What is important at all levels is that we value people, not the state of the economy or the state of our politics, but the state of our people, the people we live with, our greatest resource.” Questions from the floor followed his address, and the Mayor was asked whether the different councils in the South of Tenerife worked together. He confirmed that they did on matters of mutual interest, and were very active as a co-ordinated group. He was also asked how long the Adeje Convivencia programme would last. He said it was “ongoing and an evolving project that originated in earlier campaigns, all with the same aim of increasing the levels of harmony and co-existence in Adeje”. He also said that local government stability was a factor in working on important, long-

term projects such as this. He and the Council were praised by members of the group for the work they do in mak-

ing Adeje, “one of the best places in Tenerife to live”, and for his participation in the evening.

Your Emails Dear Editor, May I say a big thank you to Nele and everyone at Westhaven Bay in Costa del Silencio for their help with my fund-raising event last Friday. I held a sale of personally hand-made crafts, including a variety of Christmas decorations and cakes. It was my third Christmas sale to raise money to help fight cancer. which I particularly wanted to do in memory of a friend, Maggie, who died of cancer here in 2012. Thanks to the help and generosity of many friends, shops and businesses in Las Galletas, and the tremendous assistance given by Westhaven Bay in providing space for my stall inside their restaurant area, I was able to make a donation of over 400 euros. I would like to thank everyone who helped make it such an enjoyable and successful evening, and for their support for such an important cause. Carole, Las Galletas

Spain’s healthy, long-life outlook SPANISH citizens are generally healthy when it comes to life expectancy and infant mortality, according to a new report.

In fact, as far as Health at a Glance, the 2014 report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), for countries forming part of the European Union, Spain ranks above the average. Spain, Italy and France lead the 28-strong group of EU countries, where life expectancy at birth exceeds 80 years. Specifically, the people born in Spain achieved in 2012 a life expectancy at birth of 82.5 years - the highest in the European Union. Female life expectancy within the EU was highest in Spain (85.5 years), while male life expectancy was highest in Sweden (79.9 years). The number of healthy life years expected from the age of 65 in 2012 was similar in the EU for men and women, at 8.5 years. In Spain, these figures stand at 9.2 years for men and nine years for women. But although EU life expectancy is on the up, so is the burden created by chronic diseases such as diabetes and dementia. A study, conducted by the International Diabetes Federation and used by the OECD, shows that 8.2% of Spanish citizens aged between 20 and 79 suffer from diabetes, compared with an EU average of 6%. As for de-

mentia, 7.5% of over-60s suffer some form of dementia, compared with the EU average of 7%. The age-adjusted average rate of EU mortality stood at 1,500 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. The lowest mortality rates were posted by countries in northern, western and southern Europe, especially France, Spain, Italy and Switzerland, with about 900 or fewer deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Spain, together with France, Portugal, Greece and Italy, posted the lowest rate of death from ischemic heart disease in the EU, with rates below 115 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Infant mortality in Spain is also below the average: 3.1 deaths per 1,000 live births in Spain in those under the age of one, compared with the EU average of 4. And Spain has reduced its infant mortality rate by almost 23 points since 1970. The death rates relating to road traffic accidents have fallen by over 45% throughout the European Union since 2000: Spain, with Luxembourg, Ireland, Estonia and Latvia all lowering their mortality rates by 60% or more in this 10year period. Spain is also among the countries with the lowest suicide rates, alongside other southern European countries Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Italy, Spain and the UK. Spain had the highest HIV-AIDS incident rate in the Nineties, but that rate has fallen significantly and now stands at 1.7 new cases per 100,000

inhabitants. As for tobacco consumption, Spain has a percentage of adult daily smokers slightly higher than the EU average (23.9% compared with 20.9%), but the Spanish smoking rate has dropped by 25% in the last decade. Spain has 3.8 doctors per 1,000 inhabitants, which

is higher than the EU average of 3.4, and three hospital beds per 1,000 inhabitants, putting it on a par with Sweden, the UK and Ireland. The quality of healthcare in chronic processes can be measured by hospital admission rates for pathologies such as asthma and diabetes.

In Spain, the hospital admission rate for asthma among adults per 100,000 inhabitants stands at 40, below the EU average of 51. In terms of the hospital admission rate for chronic diabetes, the Spanish rate of 85 per 100,000 inhabitants is one of the lowest in the European Union. The mortality rate in hospital within 30 days of suffering a heart attack in Spain stands at 8.5%, which is slightly above the EU average. And with rates of postoperative complications involving pulmonary embolism or deep-vein thrombosis at 307 per

100,000 cases after surgery, Spain is one of three countries with the lowest rates. With 77% of the “atrisk” population covered, Spain is among the top five EU countries in terms of breast-cancer screening coverage. Spain matches the EU average (20.9 DDD/1,000 inhabitants/day) in terms of primary healthcare anti-biotics prescription, as well as in terms of prescribing second-choice anti-biotics (19.6 DDD/1,000 inhabitants/year). And Spain spends 9.3% of its GDP on healthcare, against the EU average of 8.7%.

Spanish new-borns are gathering pace THE number of births in Spain increased by 2,037 in the first six months of this year, to a total of 209,482. It amounted to a 1% rise, compared with the same period in 2013, according to the latest figures published by Spain’s National Statistics Institute. It was the first January-to-June increase since 2010, when the number rose by 0.7%. Conversely, the number of deaths in the first six months of 2014 rose by 3.5% to 207,445, against the 2013 figures. The downward trend in national population

growth - the difference between births and deaths - continued in the first half of 2014, falling 70.5% against that period last year. Immigrants in Spain represented a disproportionately lower number of deaths, “because the foreign population is, generally, much younger than the Spanish population”, said the National Statistics Institute. It also said the balance for 2014 would still probably be positive, yet figures published at the end of October predicted that natural population growth would turn negative in

Spain for the first time in 2015. If so, it means that for the first time, the number of deaths in the country will be greater than the number of births. In absolute terms, the Galicia region, in northwest Spain, is where natural population decline is occurring most quickly. In 2013, the region lost 10,706 citizens, and a further 6,138 in the first half of 2014. Madrid is registering the highest, natural population growth. There were 22,950 new Spaniards in that region in 2013, and a fur-

ther 9,601 in the first half of 2014. The size of the Spanish population was estimated to be 46.7 million people at the end of 2013. In that year, half-amillion foreign residents abandoned the country - an accelerating trend since 2011. By nationality, British citizens living in Spain were the largest collective, with 87,880 departing. The National Statistics Institute forecasts Spain will lose 1.02 million residents over the next 15 years, and over the next 50 years, a loss of 5.6m is projected.

Outrage as ETA terrorists go free THE immediate prison release of two ETA terrorists by a national High Court tribunal in Madrid has met with outrage and disgust.

The court ruled that time served in a French jail by Santiago Arrospide Sarasola and Alberto Plazaola Anduaga should be taken into account in their Spanish sentences. It followed a Council of Europe framework decision on the accumulation of sentences across several EU countries. The Public Prosecutor’s Office will appeal the new ruling before the Supreme Court because it is “worried” by the different criteria applied by different sections of the same court to similar cases, and that the European framework decision is not a directive. Ángeles Pedraza, chairwoman of Spain’s Terror Victims’ Association (AVT), said on Spanish radio: “It seems to me to be the greatest indignity in a country where there has been more than 50 years of murders without any of the victims taking justice into their own

hands, and now they have to put up with this.” She added that the government had fooled victims, and that “respecting the law now depends on the ideology of the judges”. In a statement released by the FVT, the victims’ associations complained that another section of the national High Court has already denied identical petitions, and say the judge’s ruling is against current Spanish law.

“The aim appears to be none other that preventing terrorist prisoners from serving the full sentences handed down by Spanish courts, which represents an immense humiliation for each and every terror victim. “As victims, we can only express our rejection of the lack of sensitivity towards our suffering, given that on innumerable occasions we have expressed our wish that terrorists

serve the full sentences handed down to them by Spanish courts, and in which we have placed our trust in justice and the necessary reparations for the terrible damage terrorist activity has caused us.” The associations have demanded Spain’s Supreme Court hear the Public Prosecutor’s appeal against the High Court decision to release the two convicted terrorists and “immediately” order measures

against this release. A spokeswoman for Spain’s Terror Victim Federation (FVT), an umbrella organisation for the country’s victims’ associations, said the statement condemning the ruling had been “very easy, because we are all worried and hurt by what has happened”. She added: “The only thing we want is to live in a democratic country with the rule of law applied to all. We un-

derstand Spanish rule of law should prevail in these cases faced with controversial rulings handed down by European courts. “We understand the Spanish government is trying [to stop this happening], but not hard enough. We would like to see the decision reversed and the two terrorists back in prison.” Arrospide, the 66-yearold known as Santi Potros, was arrested in France in 1987, three months after the bombing he ordered of Barcelona’s Hipercor supermarket, in which 21 people were killed and 45 injured. He was sentenced by a French court to 10 years in jail in 1990 and extradited to Spain, where a Spanish court ordered a 790-year prison term. Under Spanish sentencing rules, he was not initially set to be released until 2030. But this was brought forward to 2025 when the European Court of Human Rights struck down Spain’s Parot Doctrine on sentence reductions for terrorists last year. Plazaola was sentenced to 46 years in jail in 1997 for terrorist activities and was not scheduled for release until 2026.

Madrid health chief sacked JAVIER Rodríguez, Madrid’s health chief, has been axed following his handling of Spain’s Ebola crisis in Spain.

He was extremely harsh on Teresa Romero, the Spanish nursing assistant who contracted the virus in October. Yet last week he told the Europa Press Televisión news agency he was confident he would remain in his post. “If I had done things badly, Teresa Romero would not be talking,” he said, adding that

were it not for his management of the Ebola crisis: “Spain would continue to have that disease.” In fact, the country has

now been officially declared free of Ebola by WHO, the World Health Organisation. Ms Romero became infected with Ebola while

treating two Spanish missionaries, who had been repatriated from West Africa. Fortunately, she survived the virus and has since explained that she had no idea of when or how she could have contracted it. Initial reports suggested she may have touched her face when removing her protective clothing. Rodríguez caused a public outcry when the crisis started in October with his criticism of her. Many people interpreted it as an attempt to shift the blame for the infection on to the

nursing assistant and away from the regional health authorities. During a TV interview, he expressed doubts about Romero’s professional abilities, saying; “You don’t need a master’s degree to learn how to put on a suit.” Some have “better abilities to learn than others,” he concluded. Rodríguez also insinuated during an interview with radio network Cadena SER that the nursing assistant had lied about her condition before being admitted to Carlos III Hospital in Madrid. When faced with criti-

cism for the regional authorities’ handling of the crisis, he said: “if I have to resign, I will resign,” adding that he had “come into politics with my affairs already in order”. He stressed that he was not “bound” to his position within the regional government, given that he was a doctor, and, “fortunately, I have my life all sorted out”. The statements prompted Javier Limón, husband of Teresa Romero, to begin legal proceedings against the now ex-health chief. She is seeking 300,000 euros in damages.

Greenpeace faces ‘toughest’ trial yet! GREENPEACE has weathered some 30 years of environmental protests in Spain, and is used to ending up in court.

Today, the activists’ group faces 19 proceedings in the country, with fines of around 623,000 euros at stake. Mario Rodríguez, Greenpeace’s director in Spain, says with air of resign: “Our actions normally finish with a punishment for disorder, which we end up paying,” But the group’s actions at Valencia’s Cofrentes nuclear power plant could break the bank. If found guilty, it faces a 357,371-euro fine and imprisonment for those involved. The Public Prosecutor has called for 16 Greenpeace activists, plus and prize-winning photo-journalist Pedro Armestre to be jailed for 32 months for entering the plant, painting graffiti and placing a placard in the early hours of 15th February, 2011. Their actions, say prosecutors, led to a struggle with Cofrentes security guards.

The hearing began in Valencia yesterday (Thursday) and is expected to last a week. The 17 are accused of public disorder and causing injury and damage. Greenpeace calls it is the “toughest trial” is has yet faced in Spain. The prosecution, which says the accused planned “to destabilise the organisation of the plant”, adds: “They“dressed in orange overalls bearing the inscription Greenpeace, they accessed the interior of the security perimeter,” cutting “three security access perimeter fences, making use of a circular saw and other tools they were carrying.” Their actions activated the plant’s emergency plan and a struggle with Cofrentes security guards, who were hit, maintains the prosecution. It also alleges: “One of the group, after turning round with the saw in motion, cut the abdominal area of one of the guards,” who was slightly injured. Once inside, three activists aresaid to have climbed the plant’s cooling towers, painting graffiti and placing a placard.

Once inside, activists climbed the plant’s cooling towers and painted graffiti and placed a placard It is also alleged that civil guards, attending the scene later, urged the activists on “repeated occasions” to change their attitude, but were ignored. Greenpeace, whose doctrine is “peace”, says it did not resort to violence at Cofrentes - a claim plant owner Iberdrola rejects. Mario Rodríguez believes the case is aiming to criminalise “peaceful protest” and that the punishments sought “are excessive and disproportionate”. Armestre, an Ortega y Gasset Prize-winner who covered the Cofrentes protest, describes said: “There was tension, but no violence or blows.” Rodríguez said the group’s biggest punishment to date in Spain was in 2005 when a Cádiz judge sentenced the captain of the organisation’s Rainbow Warrior ship over a protest against the Iraq War to six months in prison for disobedience. Another activist was given a 10-day jail term.

Our high-flying airports! SPANISH airports are booming with visitors - 183 million between January and November in those comprising the AENA network and up 4.5% more than in the same period last year.

The figure was announced by Ana Pastor, Spanish Minister for Public Works, who also said the number of passengers in November rose by 3.2% from the same period last year, which was the 13th consecutive

month of growth. She stressed that the increase was particularly significant because international traffic has increased, as well as the number of domestic passengers. The Minister said the total number of passengers passing through Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport in November rose by 9.3% against the same month’s figures last year. At the closing ceremony of the 2014 Aeronautical Engineering Conference, Ana Pastor said that while air transportation was a strategic sector for any

country, it was even more so for Spain because of both social and economic factors. These stemmed from the peninsular and island nature of the country; its regional connectivity, accessibility, structure and geographic location. Also, Spain is acknowledged as an inter-continental gateway, and its position as the leading holiday destination in the world. The Public Works Minister added: “Our leadership would be inconceivable without our infrastructure network - roads, railways, sea ports and, above

Protests can’t halt oil hunt REPSOL’S search for oil in the Canary Islands is set to continue, despite several protests by activists and a request from the regional government to suspend operations. The Canaries’ regional High Court (TSJC) ruled against a precautionary suspension of the firm’s exploration work off the coasts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The Canarian Government wanted a temporary stoppage of Repsol’s activities, ahead of a ruling on an appeal against the green light given by the Industry Ministry. Members of the TSJC met last Friday to debate the appeal filed by the Canary Islands’ government, and their decision was conveyed to the parties involved on Tuesday. In total, all seven appeals filed against the

royal decree permitting Repsol’s exploration - which began two months ago - were rejected. In June, the Supreme Court in Madrid ruled in favour of a 2012 royal decree passed by the central government, giving legal backing to Repsol’s oil exploration. Magistrates rejected arguments against the activities presented by the Canarian Government, local councils in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and environmental groups Ecologists in Action and the World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF), among others. Despite the rulings, the Canary Islands Government decided to continue with legal action against the exploration work, this time choosing to bring its appeal to the TSJC. On 30th October, it

filed an appeal at the Canarian court, warning of the environmental damage which could be caused by exploration activities. Before doing so, the government - along with Greenpeace and the WWF - also filed an appeal with Public Works Minister José Manuel Soria, which was rejected as well. Last month, two protesters were injured in a skirmish between Greenpeace activists and the Spanish Navy at the site of the exploration work. The Spanish authorities rammed an environmental group dinghy after the latter refused to leave the area. A 23-year-old Italian woman working with Greenpeace was left with a broken leg after the incident. Another environmentalist suffered a blow to the ribs.

all, airports.” Ana Pastor again stressed that the World Economic Forum has included Spain on the global ranking of the top-10 countries in terms of infrastructure. The Minister for Public Works said her department was implementing comprehensive plans aimed at regulating, overseeing and stimulating the sector. This policy is based on eight lines of action, as defined by the Aviation Sector Development Plan 2014-2017. This action relates to improving safety; improving the quality of service and the protection of passenger rights; enhancing competitiveness in the sector and helping to strengthen economic development; improving the efficiency of airports and air navigation, as well as streamlining investment; balancing growth in the

sector with environmental- sustainability criteria; enhancing the aviation sector as a tool for strengthening the internal structure of Spain; boosting innovation and Spain’s international aeronautics leadership, as well as reorganising and modernising the public aviation sector in terms of administration and the companies managed under the Ministry of Public Works. The Spanish minister also mentioned the State Operational Safety Programme (Spanish acronym: PESO), which will enable operational safety in Spain to be managed comprehensively and preventively in collaboration with all stakeholders in the sector. This programme will be presented to the Lower House of Parliament in the near future for subsequent approv-

al by the Council of Ministers. Ana Pastor went on to say that AENA, the leading airport manager in the world in terms of passenger numbers, has undergone a far-reaching transformation in recent years, adapting to an efficiency-based model, streamlining investment and making the best use of its infrastructures. Thanks to these efforts, the company has entered the black for the first time and posted a 2013 net profit of 597 million euros. Finally, she said airports, air navigation and aviation safety will receive a 535m-euro investment next year, airport fees will be frozen and tax-credit schemes launched during this legislature will be maintained next year, with an increased reduction for connecting passengers.

Tesco on the skids? IT is hard to believe that Tesco, once runaway leaders in the supermarket stakes, is ditching dozens of building projects across Britain in a bid to halt its dramatic slide.

The company is cancelling more than 100 planned superstores and mothballing two schemes in East Anglia as bosses announced yet another profits warning this week. The grocer said profits for the financial year were likely to be under £1.4billion, which is down 60% on the previous year’s £3.3bn. After Tesco issued its fourth profit warning of 2014, shares in Britain’s biggest retailer slumped to their lowest price in the 21st century. And credit default swaps, which measure the chances of a company going bust, hit their highest since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008. A return to the levels of that year is revealing, because the scale of the problems facing Tesco has increasing echoes with the turmoil that engulfed the banks at the peak of the financial crisis. In a torrid 12 months, the firm lost its chief executive, suffered a devastating price war, lost market share to budget rivals - and eight senior executives were suspended over an investigation into bogus profit figures Even Black Friday, which provided a bounce in sales for all retailers, came with a sting in the tail. That’s because the chain’s website froze and the police criticised executives for failing to employ enough staff to contain chaos and violence. Analysts fear the chain will now be the “highstreet turkey” over the crucial festive period as shoppers continue to switch to cut-price competitors Aldi and Lidl. Some retail industry leaders suggest Tesco and other chains may even have to close some existing superstores

as they lose custom to budget chains as part of a huge upheaval in the nation’s shopping habits. Sainsbury’s has also indicated that it will shelve plans for 40 new large outlets. The axed Tesco projects include a highprofile development in Margate, Kent, which was opposed by many locals and even the Government’s retail adviser Mary Portas - the selfstyled Queen of Shops - who feared it would destroy local trade. Others on the list which will not go ahead include three Devon sites, at Brixham, South Molton and Holsworthy. Tesco paid a premium price for many of the sites involved and some may now have to be sold at a loss. The firm’s property arm will try to get planning permission for housing estates on many plots. Many schemes were secured by the company, despite bitter opposition from community groups and traders. Others plans axed include Ipswich, Hadleigh in Suffolk, Romsey, in Hampshire, Sherbourne in Dorset, Tolworth in Surrey and Coleford, Gloucestershire. The company has implemented a series of urgent remedies in the hope that they will shore up Christmas sales. These include cutting prices on 1,000 grocery essentials, such as milk, bread and eggs. It has also taken on 6,000 extra staff since mid-October to improve service. The entire accounts team has been sent for retraining to prevent any repeat of the false profit claims, and the company is drawing up new contracts with suppliers. Chief executive Dave Lewis, who has just completed his first 100 days at the helm, said the firm’s priorities were to restore competitiveness, strengthen the balance sheet and rebuild “trust and transparency”. He added: “We need to get back to core principles. We need to improve the service and availability, and that is what we are doing. For now, all the Tesco team is focused on delivering

the best Christmas for customers.” But retail expert Julie Palmer, of businessrecovery firm Begbies Traynor, said Tesco’s problems were deepseated. “Just as it has been cutting prices in a bid to compete in the ongoing supermarkets price war, the UK’s largest food retailer has surprised the market by slashing its profit forecasts for the full year by nearly £500million, compared with analyst expectations,” she said. “For some time, UK consumers have been voting with their feet, preferring the combination of value and quality provided by Tesco’s smaller peers. And with today’s negative shareprice reaction, it seems investors too are heading for the check-out.’ But Lewis tried to present the latest profit warning as a “year zero” for him and the retailer. He has effectively rebased the company by applying his own standards and strategy. This includes the price cuts, the extra staff on the shop floor, new relationships with suppliers, and the end of measures to “artificially” boost profits at the end of a financial period. The Tesco boss believes this £500m plan, costing puts the grocer in a stronger position to compete over the longterm. Some industry sources say it represents a backto-basics approach for Tesco, which wants to focus on just selling food again. Rather than relying on clever deals with suppliers to make money - a tactic which, ultimately,

led to a £263m accounting scandal - Lewis wants the supermarket group to focus on generating profits from what it sells to shoppers. “While the steps we are taking are impacting short-term profitability, they are essential to restoring the health of our business,” he said. “We will not engage in shortterm actions that compromise in any way our offer for customers.” However, the shortterm impact of Lewis’ plan has rattled the

City, who were already braced for bad news. Clive Black, analyst at Shore Capital, said the new profit warning suggests that Tesco will now lose £182m in the UK for the six months between the start of September and the end of February. As a result, the company is unlikely to pay any more dividends for at least the next 18 months. There could be even worse news to follow. For all Lewis’s plans,

Tesco remains hamstrung with too many supermarkets in the wrong place and the wrong size. There have been a string of warnings recently from Waitrose boss Mark Price, Sir Ian Cheshire, outgoing boss of Kingfisher, and analysts at Goldman Sachs that supermarket retailers need to close stores, which will be a painful process. Sir Ian warned in an interview over the weekend that it has taken a decade for B&Q to manage its over-built estate, and that it still has an average of eight years to run on its leases. As such, there is no easy answer to Tesco’s problems. Last month, Sainsbury’s reported a £290m loss on the back of write-downs on its property. However, Tesco’s losses could be worse, which is worrying news for a company lumbered with £7.5bn of net debt, a pension deficit of £3.4bn and lease liabilities of more than £11bn.

Justo gusto doesn’t pay! WORKERS, firefighters and local police officers at Barcelona Zoo used power hoses to fend off lions as they rescued a man who jumped into their enclosure on Sunday.

Justo José MP, a policeman dressed in military attire who had already staged a number of one-man protests throughout Barcelona, was taken to Vall d’Hebron Hospital with bites and scratches all over his body. The Spanish citizen was mauled by three lions after climbing the security railings, scaling down the wall and being dragged into a tunnel by the animals. On 23rd November, he was arrested for hanging two swastikas from the famous Antoni Gaudí-designed La Pedrera building in “an anti-abortion protest”. One of the signs read

“Abortion murder.” The other read: “40,000 children. Hitler [was an] amateur.” Earlier, on 11th September, he burnt an estelada - an unofficial flag flown by Catalan secessionists - in front of a public monument, and on 4th November, he attempted to enter the regional government’s headquarters with a sign about officials accepting bribes. Justo José MP is said to be a local policeman from the town of Gelida, in the Barcelona province, who is currently on leave. The Sunday incident was far from being an accident because Justo José reportedly had a sign inside his backpack which he planned to unfurl inside the lions’ enclosure. It read: “In order to fall in here, you need to enter.” And a spokesman for the Barcelona firefighting service said: “This person meant to enter!”

Speak German in your home! BAVARIA’S governing conservatives have stirred up a storm of criticism by insisting that immigrants should not only speak German in public but also in the home.

The Christian Social Union (CSU), an ally of German Chancellor Angela Merkel, believes it is a matter for debate and is not yet official policy. Critics launched a Twitter hashtag - #YallaCSU - which became a top-trending topic among German Twitter users. Some have expressed alarm about politics reaching into the home, but the hashtag is an ironic joke at the CSU’s expense because “Yalla” is Arabic for “let’s go”! The CSU draft proposal says: “People who want to remain here on a permanent basis should be encouraged to speak German in public and within the family.” Andreas Scheuer, CSU general secretary, believed the proposal to be “well prepared and widely backed”. But Yasmin Fahimi, general secretary of the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), said the

CSU had “arrived in Absurdistan”, adding: “It would be hilarious if it weren’t so dangerous.” The SPD, like the CSU, is in coalition with Ms Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) at national level. Natascha Kohnen, SPD leader in Bavaria, suggested the proposal would be impossible to enforce, saying: “All we need now is the CSU language police to control all of this.” Peter Tauber, CDU general secretary, said: “It’s nothing to do with politics whether I speak Latin, Klingon or Hessian at home.” And Eike Hallitzky, the Greens’ leader in Bavaria, joked that the CSU’s next move might be to tell citizens to furnish their homes with blue-and-white carpets - the colours of the Bavarian flag. The CSU has played a prominent role in pushing immigration higher up the political agenda. Data from the EU shows that Germany was the main European destination for immigrants in 2012 (592,200), followed by the UK (498,000), Italy (350,800) and France (327,400). Worldwide, Germany is also the top destination for asylum seekers. German official data shows that Turks

formed the largest foreign-born group in Germany in 2013 (1.5m), followed by Asians, non-EU Europeans (including Russians and Bosnians), and immigrants from EU members Poland and Italy. Paul Patel, a British expatriate in Munich, told the BBC he backed the CSU proposal. “I want my daughter to grow up bilingual and so we use both English and German with her,” he said. Why not also speak German at home, whatever your native language is? “If we as immigrants see our long-term future in this very supportive country, then the old adage ‘practice makes perfect’ is appropriate here.” But Steve Coombs, a Briton living in Wiesloch, said: “As far as the language goes, my employer considers me to be German. However, the language I speak within my own four walls is my own concern.” Hassan Saad, another immigrant resident in Germany, said: “The idea of speaking German at home is never implementable. “We all have our freedom of language, and I believe this proposal reflects the failure of integration in Germany and the resulting frustration.”

Murdered bride’s family left seething at husband’s release THE case of British businessman Shrien Dewani, accused of murdering his new bride during their South Africa honeymoon, was thrown out on Monday.

But Anni Dewani’s family were left outraged at the verdict, saying they had been failed by the justice system, and were considering a private prosecution. Her tearful sister, Ami Denborg, said they were furious at “unanswered questions” as an unemotional Mr Dewani, of Bristol, prepared to fly back to the UK. Judge Jeanette Traverso said the evidence presented by the prosecution fell “far below the threshold” of what a reasonable court could convict on. She also insisted that the evidence of the prosecution’s main witness was “riddled with contradictions”. The judge, at Western Cape High Court in Cape Town, said the only reason not to grant the application would be in the hope that Mr Dewani would implicate himself if he gave evidence. But to do so would be a “manifest misdirection”. Mr Dewani was extradited to South Africa this year to face trial, accused of planning the murder of his wife in November 2010. He listened intently as key evidence against him was criticised by the judge as she gave her ruling after nearly three hours. Mrs Dewani’s family, who had said it would it be a “nightmare” if the trial did not continue, immediately left the court room. They bowed their heads amid shouting from the public gallery. Prosecutors said bisexual Mr Dewani had long planned to get out of the relationship to Swedish-raised Anni, arranging the attack in which he would escape unharmed and Anni

would be killed. Ami added: “We are deeply disappointed. We came here looking for answers and we came here looking for the truth - and all we got was more questions. “We waited patiently for four years to hear what really happened to Anni and to hear the full story of what happened to our dearest little sister. “All we wanted was to hear all the events and the hope of actually finding that out has kept us, as a family, going. Unfortunately, we believe that this right has now been taken away from us.” Her uncle, Ashok Hindocha, said the family would be going through the case with their lawyers to confirm whether they can file a lawsuit against Mr Dewani in the UK. “We would have preferred to have known about his sexuality before he married our precious Anni,” he added. “She gave herself to him, mind, body and soul and she hoped to have been cherished and loved. But she would not have married him if she had known about his secret sex life with male prostitutes, and the activities he engaged in.” The judge ruled that it was not necessary for Mr Dewani to give evi-

dence, saying a defendant was entitled to be discharged if there was no possibility of conviction unless he entered the witness box and incriminated himself. She said the evidence from the three criminals already convicted over Mrs Dewani’s murder was “so improbable, with so many mistakes, lies and inconsistencies that you cannot see where the lies ended and the truth begins”. Mr Dewani, 34, has always denied plotting

with others to murder his bride, who was found shot dead in the back of their taxi after the couple were hijacked during a latenight tour of a township. Cab-driver Zola Tongo, Mziwamadoda Qwabe and gunman Xolile Mngeni had already been convicted in their part of the murder Judge Traverso said it was crucial for the state’s case to prove that Mr Dewani entered into an agree-

ment with others to have Anni killed. But Tongo was the only accomplice witness, she said, adding that such evidence should be treated with “caution”. And his version needed to be corroborated, specifically where it implicated the accused. Details such as where he picked up and dropped off Mr Dewani and his wife did not provide corroboration, said the judge. It is what was said during these events which

is at issue and for that there is only the version of Tongo. She said the same applied to phone calls between Tongo and Mr Dewani, adding: “This telephone communication does not, in itself, corroborate what was said during those calls; it merely confirms that communication took place.” The prosecution had alleged the men carried out the killing for Mr Dewani for 15,000 rand (about £830). The judge said Tongo and his accomplices were “intelligent men” and dismissed the prosecution claim that they would have carried out a contract killing for Mr Dewani for “a few thousand rand”. South African National Prosecuting Authority spokesman Nathi Ncube said they were disappointed with the outcome but would respect the decision of the judge and not appeal. “It is unfortunate that Mr Dewani has been acquitted because we believe he was involved,” said Mr Ncube. “The court did not find that he was innocent - the court said it could not rely on the evidence given by three witnesses who themselves had been convicted of the crime.” But Mr Ncube also denied that the case had collapsed because of a “shoddy police investigation”. He said: “The judgement centres on evidence given by three people. Nothing has been said about the police, and nothing was said about how the prosecution could have done better. The fact is that we were relying on people who were themselves involved and implicated in the case.” Tongo is serving an 18-year jail term for his role in the murder and Qwabe was given a 25year jail sentence for his role. Mngeni was serving life for firing the shot that killed Mrs Dewani, but died in prison from a brain tumour.

Insomnia drugs could make criminals of you SLEEPING pills, prescribed widely in Britain and taken by such celebrities as Lindsay Lohan and Tiger Woods, have taken a fearful knock this week.

A leading American neurologist is convinced they could be blamed for numerous cases of dangerous and even criminal behaviour. Zolpidem, handed out to around 750,000 NHS patients seeking treatment for insomnia each year, is definitely a factor in dozens of cases in which people have broken the law while sleeping. They include 43 instances of driving, nine rapes, eight assaults, 10 murders or manslaughters, and burglaries. The crimes were all, it is claimed, carried out while the perpetrators were, apparently, asleep. And in most cases, they also had no memory of the event. Professor Mark Mahowald is a neurologist member of Sleep Forensic Associates, a USbased organisation of doctors who help those who break the law while still asleep. He says: “It appears that one part of the brain responsible for complex activities, like driving or cooking, is awake, while another, involved in memory, is not. ‘In sleep-driving for

example, people take the drug, go to bed, and then wake up in the car with their pyjamas on. When the police pull them over, they do not know how they got there.’ Prof Mahowald, of the University of Minnesota Medical School, adds: “One of the difficulties in advising people about taking the drug is that it is really effective, and there does not seem to be any way of identifying people at risk of these uncommon side-effects.’ Some 82 medicationrelated cases worked on since 2006 involved “toxicity” through Zolpidem. In 79 of the cases, the defence was successful. Zolpidem, also known by its American brand name Ambien, works by dampening the electrical activity of the brain. Troubled actress Lohan has admitted to problems while taking Ambien. Zolpidem was initially marketed two decades ago as a safer alternative to older, more addictive benzodiazepine drugs, including Valium. But in recent years, Zolpidem, along with similar so-called Zdrugs such as zopiclone, have been linked to a raised risk of dementia and heart problems. Numerous studies have reported rare instances of patients driving, eating, making telephone calls and even having sex while under the influence of the

medication. Some experts even recommend that patients secure their bedroom windows and get into bed before taking the drug, to reduce any possibility of harm. One report, by doctors at the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires, claimed that up to 1% of patients had a sleep-eating problem after taking the sedative. The only clues to their nocturnal feasting were morning left-overs

and crumbs in the bed. Patients being prescribed Zolpidem are already warned that changes in sleep behaviour, including sleepwalking, are a possible side-effect, but this is the first time data on criminal behaviour linked to the drug has been collected comprehensively. New US research shows that the drug is implicated in 10% of emergency department cases because of psychi-

atric drugs. In over-65s, it accounted for 21% of cases. One theory is that the events actually occur while people are waking from deep sleep. Although prescribing guidelines state Zolpidem should be used only in the short term, with an initial two-week course recommended, a recent study by herbal sleep-aid company Sleepio found that up to 42% of patients on sleeping pills had been

taking them for more than a decade, and a quarter for between three and five years. And, according to the Economic and Social Research Council, 10% of us now take some form of sleeping tablet regularly. Dr Guy Leschziner, consultant neurologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London, says: “These drugs tend to be habit-forming and can have unintended consequences, such as these unwanted behaviours.’ Mild and fleeting, so-called confusional arousals, such as waking up in a hotel room with no idea where you are, are common, especially in people who are over-tired. Some researchers say the events seen in users of the drug occur during these arousals, and point out that no drug has ever been shown in laboratory studies to cause sleep-walking a phenomenon which happens when the cortex is asleep, but areas of the brain concerned with movement are active. Dr Leschziner adds: “This sedative may, at least in some people, uncover an underlying predisposition to these sleep disorders, like sleep-walking. “During these events, parts of the brain appear to remain asleep while other parts responsible for complex behaviours are awake.”

WHEN a non-resident sells property in Spain (including Tenerife, of course), the purchaser must withhold 3% of the price and pay it to the tax authorities to cover the vendor’s Capital Gain Tax.

In English, it is known as Capital Gain Tax retention, and the Spanish is “Retención sobre la venta de bienes inmuebles”. The tax has to be declared in the vendor’s yearly income tax returns. But this retention does not cover the vendor’s ‘plusvalia’ (Town Hall Tax) liability, which is paid to the Town Hall and is a separate matter. After the sale, the

buyer has one month from the date of sale to pay the 3% retention to the local tax office using the application form 211. A copy of the submit-

ted application must be given to the vendor, so a refund can be claimed if applicable. If the vendor believes he is owed a refund (that the tax liability

is less than the 3% retention), he has three months to present form 212 requesting a refund. In many cases, the vendor`s tax liability is

greater than the retention (depending on the size of the liability). For example, if a nonresident sells a holiday home in Spain for 100,000 euros, the ven-

dor would retain 3,000 euros and pay it to the tax office. If the vendor originally bought the home for 50,000 euros, meaning a capital gain of 50,000 euros, and a capital gains tax of approximately 9,000 euros. In this case, the vendor will not be entitled to a refund, and may be pursued for 6,000 euros back home by the Spanish Inland Revenue Office. This is just an idea and not a proper liquidation (the taxation depends on other matters). Note: This matter is applicable only to vendors who are considered non-resident by the Spanish tax authorities. To be considered a tax resident, the vendor should get the appropriate certificate from the Inland Revenue Office. Canterbury Cathedral BBC2, 21.00

With unparalleled access to Canterbury Cathedral over the course of a year, this series takes audiences inside the community that is the beating heart of the Anglican Communion. Today and throughout the 1400 years since St Augustine founded the Christian community in Canterbury, those who run it live on site. As well as a place of worship, it is a place of hospitality - a world class destination for a million modern pilgrims every year, with and an international reputation to uphold. The Archbishop of Canterbury is a regular visitor who will feature in the series. Viewers will also get an insight into the workings of the Cathedral, with access to the Dean, and Chapter together with the wider community of choristers, including the brand new all-girl choir, the stained glass conservationists, stone masons, apprentices, and the many pilgrims who come here. Discover Canterbury Cathedral’s rhythms, history, fabric, rituals, music and treasures, and some of its international visitors. Canterbury Cathedral holds a unique place, both in the British imagination and throughout the world and the series will open the door to the majesty of its story and its people, through the eyes of some of its 300 staff and 800 volunteers. As Canterbury Cathedral gears up for Christmas, from Advent Sunday onwards, viewers are taken behind the scenes to meet the virgers and clergy and to follow the famous choir as they prepare for a schedule of over 50 rehearsals, services and events in just four weeks. The ancient rhythms of worship, first established in Canterbury by St Augustine in the year 597, are always maintained but Canterbury has always been at the forefront of change. Breaking 1400 years of tradition, the New Year sees the inaugural evensong of the Cathedral’s first girls’ choir. Follow the girls through their auditions and rehearsals before that first, historic service in a packed cathedral. The boys’ choir, on the other hand, take their talents all the way to sub-arctic Norway to visit one of the most far-flung shrines to Canterbury’s most famous martyr - Saint Thomas Becket. Renewal is happening within the fabric of the building too. The Great South Window – almost the size of a tennis court – is having to be completely dismantled and rebuilt with every stone being carved by hand in the Cathedral’s workshops. Whilst the work is taking place on the stone frame, the priceless stained glass travels outside the cathedral precincts for the first time in its 800-year existence, to be exhibited in a city only half the age of the glass itself … New York.

W C ch o i ce Wild Weather with Richard Hammond BBC1, 21:00

Richard Hammond travels the globe in an attempt to reveal the hidden world of weather. Richard Hammond investigates the crucial role temperatureplays. Without heat, there would be no weather - no clouds, no rain, no snow, no dust storms, no thunder and lightning. Richard sets off to find out about hot air with the help of a quarry and a massive hot plate discovers just why it is so hard to pull a sword out of snow. He discovers, by building his own massive dust storm with the help of a few friends and dust specialist Dr Nigel Tapper, just how sand from the Sahara bounces its way to the UK. In Canada he creates his own ice storm. He also drops in on Dan Morgan who creates lightning bolts in his lab, where Richard is able to see thunder and hear lightning with the aid of some special cameras, light bulbs and a few candles.

The Choir: New Military Wives BBC2, 21:00 Two-part documentary following choirmaster Gareth Malone, as he forms a special Military Wives choir to perform at a WW1 centenary prom at London’s Royal Albert Hall, alongside the cast of War Horse. It’s three years since Gareth formed the first Military Wives choir and since then the organisation has mushroomed with over 2,000 members around the globe. In this episode, Gareth sets out to audition as many of them as possible for his 100-strong choir. The wives usually sing pop songs, but Gareth has a repertoire of taxing classical pieces that were popular at the time of the First World War in mind. As rehearsals get under way, Gareth discovers that the wives’ dignity in the face of the constant threat of the death of their loved ones is as strong as ever, and the wives discover powerful parallels with their counterparts 100 years before them. The episode culminates in an performance at RAF Brize Norton for some of Britain’s last deployment of troops to return from Afghanistan.

Brian Pern: A Life In Rock BBC2, 22.00 Comedy actor and award-winning documentary filmmaker Rhys Thomas and fellow Fast Show comic Simon Day combine once again in the rock doc parody. This year is the tenth anniversary of the twentieth anniversary of the fifth anniversary of the first anniversary of the non-release of his unheard debut solo album, Brian Pern’s Musical Version Of The Day Of The Triffids. To celebrate, Brian plans to stage the entire album live from the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa with a host of special guests. The Great British Bake Off Masterclass: BBC2, 20:00

Christmas - Masterclass. In the countdown to Christmas, Great British Bake Off judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood are getting festive in the kitchen. They have six brand new recipes to bake for the family this Christmas, inspired by rich traditions from all over Europe. Paul kicks off the baking with St Lucia buns, which are saffron buns traditionally eaten throughout Advent in Scandinavia. He puts a twist on the traditional mince pie, making a mincemeat and marzipan couronne, while Mary makes a French galette and offers alternatives to traditional Christmas cake and Christmas pudding. She makes a fruit-filled genoa cake and white chocolate and stem ginger cheesecake. The baking is topped off by Paul’s kransekake - a spectacular tower of rings of delicate mixture.

Black Mirror Channel 4, 21:00

Black Mirror: White Christmas is a chilling feature-length seasonal special of the critically-acclaimed drama series, starring Jon Hamm, Rafe Spall and Oona Chaplin. The most mind-bending episode yet consists of three interwoven stories brimming with near-future madness. In a mysterious and remote snowy outpost, Matt and Potter, share a Christmas meal together, swapping creepy tales of their earlier lives in the outside world. Matt is a charismatic American trying to bring the reserved, secretive Potter out of his shell. But are both men who they appear to be? Along the way we see Jon Hamm offering an unusual form of romantic guidance to an inexperienced young man, watch Oona Chaplin thrust headlong into a nightmarish world of ‘smart’ gadgetry, and explore what might happen if you could ‘block’ people in real life, just as you can on Facebook or Twitter. All three stories are bound together into a suitably unsettling whole.

The World’s Most Photographed BBC2, 15:55 Series which decodes the public image of ten of the world’s most photographed people by unearthing pictures previously lost or suppressed. Queen Victoria’s accession to the throne in 1837 coincided almost exactly with the invention of photography. She would be the first woman in the world to live both her private and public lives in front of the camera. At first, photography was a private pleasure, a way of capturing images of herself and her family for their own personal amusement. But during the course of her 64-year reign, Queen Victoria began to use the camera as a way to win the affection and sympathy of her people, and an opportunity to establish her as the defining symbol of British imperial power. By the time Queen Victoria died in 1901, photography had transformed the relationship between the monarchy and the people. The private life of the monarch was more visible to more people than ever before. But Victoria still managed to take one photographic secret to the grave.

Hit and Run ITV1, 21.00

In 2013, more than 1,500 people were killed or seriously injured on UK roads by drivers who failed to stop. The programme features contributions from those left seriously injured or bereaved by hit and run drivers, and looks into the task police collision investigators face in first tracing the vehicle involved, and then in securing convictions against the perpetrators. In Manchester, a car is shown on CCTV ploughing into a group of men before speeding off, leaving three of them badly injured including one with serious brain damage. Detective Chief Inspector Mark Hudson, who led the investigation, said it stemmed from two groups of men who had indulged in some ‘tomfoolery’ outside a nightclub before events took a sinister turn, with the crash a seemingly deliberate act. DCI Hudson says: “To have driven down the one-way system, contravening the traffic, accelerating through the junction, into the people is a premeditated act.” Officers eventually traced the Vauxhall, which had been repaired and sold on in an obvious attempt to cover up the crime.

A Night of Heroes: The Sun Military Awards, also known as The Millies, are the awards which recognise the excellence and sacrifice made by Britain’s Armed Forces. Taking place at London’s National Maritime Museum, leading celebrities from film, television, sport and music will attend the gala evening honouring the achievements of our Servicemen and women. The eight awards will be presented to celebrate outstanding performances and contributions in the military. The exceptional ceremony, now in its 7th year, is hosted by Phillip Schofield and Amanda Holden. This year’s awards include Saving Lives, The Firefight, Brothers in Arms, Bomb Hunters, Hero Abroad, Home Front Hero, Support to The Armed Forces and Judges’ Special Recognition Award. The awards have been judged by a panel, which includes celebrities Jeremy Clarkson, Andy McNab, Lorraine Kelly and Penny Lancaster. Since inception in 2008 The Millies have become one of the most important events dedicated to honouring the immeasurable contribution made by the Servicemen and women who serve Britain at home and abroad. The lavish star-studded evening has become established in the annual events calendar. The event has previously been attended by senior members of the Royal Family including The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. Amanda Holden said: “The Millies is my opportunity to pay respect to the real life heroes of our armed forces who keep us all safe. It is a great honour to present such a prestigious show for ITV1 and highlight the amazing work which our service men and women do every single day of the year.” Phillip Schofield said: “Once a year at The Millies I get chance to stand amongst the most incredible of people that make up the British Armed Forces. The stories I hear are truly inspiring, heroic and defy belief in the measures they will go to against all odds. It’s an evening I am incredibly proud to continue to be a part of.”

The RTS awardwinning documentary series continues from its new home, St George’s in south west London, which has one of Britain’s most advanced and busiest A&E departments. This episode, the last in this series, focuses on the bonds between patients and their families, as well as those between the staff in the A&E department. Retired builder Roger has fallen four metres from his daughter Lisa’s roof while doing some building work for her. The trauma team is concerned that he may have badly injured his head, back and neck in the accident. Lisa heard him fall from her roof ‘like a sack of potatoes’. Roger’s wife Ellen waits as he’s taken for a CT scan to find out how badly he’s been hurt. She talks about how Roger has always been a support for her, particularly recently when she lost four sisters. Folk musician Tad, who’s 29, has come to A&E after developing a dangerously high heart rate. Left untreated it could be very serious and possibly lead to a stroke.

12th December 2014 - 18th December 2014

37 CW

The show must go on By Andy Briggs CHRISTMAS and New Year are almost upon us. It is a time that brings with it joy, sharing and, for most, some well-earned time off work. For entertainers, though, the show must go on! I’ve done some research into who is where and what he/she is doing over the festive season, and there is a bounty of spectacles to be seen. So here are just some of the fine acts you can watch, and where to find them. Helena Campbell is one of my favourite female singers here. On Xmas Eve you can find Helena in the Soul Lodge in Pueblo Canario. And if you are dining out on New Year´s Eve, why not try The Chill Out restaurant, Los Cristianos promenade, where Helena will be gracing the Las Vistas seafront with her angelic voice from 8pm. Like Helena, there is a young gentleman booked up to the eyeballs this year, which is brilliant because he can now afford to pay for his Mum to come and visit him on his first Christmas abroad … awww! Jamie Benkert who featured on this page a few weeks ago, has arrived in Tenerife with his Olly Murs Tribute show. And, like the wine at the feeding of the 5,000, people can’t get enough of him - and his festive schedule does not suggest otherwise. Christmas Eve sees Jamie singing at 8pm in The North Star bar in Puerto Colon, and then a second show just round the corner in Kandi Lounge at 9pm. On New Year´s Eve, among other venues, he will be rocking out in Ye Olde Ocean on the Fañabe seafront at 9pm. And although he has several other bookings that night, a stand-out gig for me is his 1am show at Leonardo´s, Las Americas. With this

venue dominant among party bars, it’s bound to be an incredible hour of music. Straight from spending his summer brushing shoulders with the stars while performing at The Edinburgh Festival, fellow Scot Anthony Scott is back. Perhaps best-known over here for his Billy Connolly show, he has cleverly kept New Year´s Eve free from bookings as it isn´t really a night when folk want to sit in silence and listen to StandUp comedy … more an evening for boisterous gaiety. So if you would like to catch some Billy Connolly, fused with Anthony´s own brand of comedy which saw him as one of the top breakthrough comedians this year in Edinburgh, visit The Rumpot, San Eugenio, on Christmas night (10pm) and prepare to have your sides officially split. Ollie “showbiz” Cusack has a variety of shows in which he can display his guitar skills, and the festive fortnight has him booked for all of them. The ever-wonderful Midnight Riders take the stage in Exiles, Costa del Silencio, on New

Year’s Eve and will see in the New Year with some banging Rock ‘n’ Roll anthems. On New Year´s daytime (also in Silencio), Ollie teams up with Luke Carey performing as Phenomenon in Our Place and in the evening as The Midnight Riders at Chillies bar, Las America. This bar has a young, exciting host called Lucas Alexander. He’s been on the Island just four weeks and has a somewhat unique style of entertainment. I’m excited to see what he has to offer in 2015, so more about him in the future. Christmas is a great time of year for versatile singers, those who cover all types of music, and Lisa Bridge is exactly that. Alongside Helena, she was one of the nominees for Best Female Singer at the Tenerife Entertainment Awards this year. If you would like to listen to what this fine young lady has to offer, then drop into Bo’Jangles bar, Los Cristianos, at 11pm on Christmas Eve. If that doesn´t suit, at 9.45pm she will be performing at The Original Wigan Pier, Torviscas, on the eve of the New Year and

after that a 10.45 performance back at the outstanding Bo’Jangles, setting the place ablaze with joy right through the bells. Lisa is still relatively new on the entertainment scene here but, like Mr Benkert, she is really making her mark on Tenerife´s musical landscape. Versatile singers and mixed genre shows are one thing, but some prefer to hear music by an artist they know and love - and they want to hear it done well. One of Tenerife´s finest tribute shows is performed by Keith George. Not only does Keith sing in an identical fashion to Boy George himself, but he really looks like him. Boy George is regularly in touch with Keith and helped canvas votes online this year when Keith was nominated for Best Tribute Show at the TEAs. Most venues like to diversify over the two big nights, but Keith is so good at what he does that he will be singing in St.Eugenes, San Eugenio, at 11.30pm on Christmas Eve and 11.15 pm on New Year´s Eve. And multi-award-winning Pip Brown will be

performing his Michael Buble show over the festive period. But he has something new on the horizon. Pip, in a continued example of the performer’s´s adaptability to any musical scenario, has united with Luke Carey to provide Tenerife with a tribute to Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons. He has, provocatively, been dropping hints for weeks on social media and creating immense intrigue. And he is now ready to debut his new show “The Jersey Boys” in time for Christmas. I can´t allow performers alone to monopolise this column ...what about the venues? One making some bold movements this year is Skybar, in Puerto Colon. They are really making a name for themselves in their first few months as part of a fiercelycompetitive industry: showbars. Christmas daytime creates difficult decisions for bar-owners. Should we put acts on? Will people be hungover? But those who run Skybar are not letting fear and uncertainty

phase them. They are providing their customers with a whole afternoon of live music. From Abba, to swing, to guitar duos, it will no doubt be a fine way to spend Christmas Day, and I applaud their bravery for committing to such large outgoings. I hope it will be beneficial for them and a fun day out for their customers. But if we’re mentioning must-visit venues, the Magic Lounge Bar must be among them. Upon entry, Magic screams class: the decor, the service, the quality and everything. It will be the must-visit venue over the festive period and they have some of the finest acts booked. Christmas Eve will be something special, as will New Year´s Eve. Magic will host a special party to welcome in the New Year: dancers, singers, sax, percussion … the works. It is situated across from the Safari Centre, Las Americas. And I suggest you book early if you care to attend as they have an amazing offer. Entry is 60 euros, and that includes 40 euros of drinks of your choice.

Well-dressed woolly jumper!

Christmas movie favourites

READERS of the Back To The Movies website has named Will Ferrell’s Elf as the nation’s favourite festive film. It held off It’s A Wonderful Life, which polled second, with the 1994 version of Miracle on 34th Street in third place. Home Alone came in fourth, and White Christmas completed the top five. Jim Carrey’s The Grinch was at No.6, while Brit classic Love Actually made No.7. The brilliant Michael Caine starred in the No.8 film Muppets Christmas Carol. Eighties classic The Snowman made the list at No.9 and the Tom Hanks-voiced Polar Express rounded off the chart.

IT’S fair to say that it’s not every day you see a sheep walking down the high street wearing a Christmas jumper. But the residents of Omaha in Nebraska enjoyed the sight this week, and the fashion-conscious animal has turned into something of a celebrity. Eat your heart out, Rudolph, because Gage the sheep has been making the news headlines. He was finally captured looking none the worse for his adventure and taken to the Nebraska Humane Society (NHS), which put out an appeal to find his owners. Their spokesperson, Pam Wiese, said she had encountered lost sheep before, but never any wearing a Christmas jumper! “He came in wearing his own wardrobe, which is a first for us,” she said. “We’ve had lots of sheep and goats and other guys in, but never anybody in his own Christmas attire. “I don’t think he went shopping at the mall to pick up his own Christmas sweater so, clearly, someone loves him. He’s very well socialised, and he’s a great sheep.” After a Facebook campaign and some messages on Ewe, sorry, You Tube, the sheep, named Gage, was reunited with his owner Margaret “I believe someone chased him out of the garden,” she said. “I’m glad he wasn’t eaten. People eat these things at this time of year. He is my baby, and I’ve had him five months.” As we go to print, there is still no news about why he was wearing a Christmas jumper - and his owners have been a little sheepish on the subject!

MANY seaside resorts have annual swimming events on Christmas Day. And Brighton Beach can trace its “Santa Swim” all the way back to 1860. But the beach will be quiet this year, after the Swimming Club cancelled its annual event over safety fears. Brighton and Hove City Council this week instructed swimmers to stay away from the sea over the winter, and, it confirms, the beach around Brighton Pier will be closed in a bid to stop swimmers entering the water on Christmas Day. Spokesman Chris Ingall said: “Inexperienced swimmers entering the water were an accident waiting to happen. Sea-swimming takes skill, stamina and knowledge of the physical dangers and should only be for the very experienced, using suitable wetsuits, in very calm conditions. “The combination of the number of people and their inexperience, and some of the drinking as well, means it’s an accident waiting to happen - and accidents have happened!” Brighton Swimming Club’s Fiona Southwell said “Those people jumping in on Christmas morning are totally unaware of the environment they’re jumping into, as well as the sea temperature.”

By Val Sainsbury THE number of expectant mothers dying from eclampsia, blood loss or blood clots has almost halved over the past eight years. Yet there has been no decline in the rate of “indirect” deaths from other causes, such as heart disease or post-natal depression. And 75% of those who died had medical or mental-health problems before they became pregnant. But 50% of deaths in pregnancy and birth could be avoided, according to a new report published by the National Perinatal Epidemiolo-

By Sue McDonald

Simple solution for half the ‘indirect’ pregnancy deaths gy Unit. Its experts warn that increasing levels of obesity and older women giving birth could worsen the situation. Marian Knight, from the Oxford Universitybased centre, who said half of deaths reviewed may have had a different outcome with better care, added: “However, it is very important to remember such deaths are very rare.” Overall, deaths during pregnancy have gone down by 25% since 2006. All 321 cases of women in Britain who died during or within six weeks of the end of their pregnancy between 2009 and 2012 were examined. The review found that

doctors and nurses should watch for severe infection, because 25% of new mothers who died had sepsis or blood poisoning. Pregnant women are also urged to have free flu jabs because around 9% of maternal deaths are caused by the virus. More than half the women who died were overweight or obese, with many succumbing to blood clots. The rate of deaths among mothers aged 40 and over was three times higher than those in their twenties: 23 per 100,000 compared with seven. Prof Knight said the tragedy of Charlotte Bevan would be among the

occasions, led to their deaths.” She advised women taking psychiatric drugs to see their doctor if they were considering having a baby or had become pregnant. Alan Cameron, of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said: “The report shows a welcome decrease in the overall rate of maternal deaths in the context of a rising birth-rate and more complex pregnancies. “However, more needs to be done to address maternal deaths from indirect causes, both from medical and mental health conditions, as deaths from these causes have not decreased over

the past 10 years.” The professor added: “Sepsis can develop very quickly, and it is essential that the symptoms are recognised as early as possible. Healthcare professionals need to act quickly and remain vigilant to keep sepsis rates down.” Tim Overton, of the British Maternal and Fetal Medicine Society, said: “Indirect deaths will be reduced with greater integration between primary and secondary care only.” Experts at Public Health England said 36 pregnant women died with strains of the flu virus the current vaccine protects against.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

NO other season inspires us to decorate our homes as much as the last few months of the year.

The decoration is, of course, temporary, in the form of a Christmas tree, baubles, tinsel and lights, and with this in mind you can really experiment. When looking for decorations, the colour is sometimes more important than the decorations themselves. What will be most noticeable

cases investigated for a special report next year. The 30-year-old was found dead last week in the Avon gorge in Bristol, two days after leaving hospital in sub-zero temperatures with her newborn daughter Zaani, who also died. The first-time mother had mental health problems and was believed to have made changes to her medication so she could breast-feed. The report shows 16 women died in 2012-2012 from psychiatric causes. Prof Knight said: “Several women stopped taking their medication when they became pregnant. Their illness got worse and, on some

rather than each individual bauble, will be the overall colour scheme. People respond to col-

our in various ways, and the first impression is often the one that will stay with them.

You may choose to go for a monochromatic scheme, where you pick one colour, in variations from light to deep. Add interest with proportion and texture. You might even choose to colour-coordinate your present wrapping to the overall scheme. Alternatively, you may be the type of person who just wants to mix up all the colours and go for the full -on effect. Whichever your preference, for a stylish mix of colours this Christmas, remember that most colours of equal depth will

“go” well together. Pastels can be mixed with ease - pinks, peaches, buttermilks, misty blues, lilacs and mints. If you want something more dramatic, try the deep tones of gold or silver, with navy-blue and deep-rich red or green. Colours have different meanings and effects on people, but at Christmas time, they also take on a different significance. Red is a very Christmassy colour, associated with roaring fires, holly berries and, of course Santa Claus. It is a bold, exciting colour

and combines well with golds and silvers. Gold stands for sunlight and radiance, opulence and wealth. It can be combined with other bold colours and metallics to great effect. Green is the colour of Christmas trees, and is a symbol of nature, youth and the hope of new life and new beginnings. Christmas is a feast of hope, lighting up the dim mid-winter (well, in most climates, anyway) with a new-born child symbolic of the future. White is representative of purity, light and cleanliness. It is very present at Christmas in angels robes, Santa’s beard and, naturally, snow. Whatever your choice, enjoy it. And as decorations are relatively inexpensive, don’t be afraid to experiment. Pick out your colour scheme in other small homeware items, such as scented candles, new cushion covers and table runners. Sometimes, it is not easy to make Tenerife seem Christmassy with our lovely climate. Nevertheless, you can make it cosy, attractive and festive.

The ‘money no object’ gifts...

‘Tis the season… to be looking your best

By Ruth Benson

By Carl from Robot

LAST week we looked at what gifts not to get family and friends this Christmas. So what then do you get?

IF there’s one time of the year you should be looking your utmost best, it’s the party season. There’s no way you’ll get away with not looking super-hot. Forget your excuses and your “didn’t have time” fib, there’s always a quick way to finish off that outfit superbly by making sure your hair looks fantastic. The No.1 rule is; never cheat on your root colour. And do make sure there are no tell-tale signs when you’re going out because this always looks as though you just didn’t bother. If you don’t have time to visit the salon for a special blow-dry, at least make sure you set aside time to make it look its best. Leaving the house with drab, undone hair will only make your party appearance seem, well, undone. If you are off to

The Telegraph have tried to make it easier by putting the ideas into different groups such as kids, gardeners, men, women, pets, chocolate lovers, motorists, etc. They even go into more details with categories such as handmade gifts and personal gifts. But what are the top gifts this year? Well, for those of you for whom money is no object, here is a list of must-haves according to the International Business Times. Firstly, for the ladies, how about a diamond encrusted USB, which can hold up to 32GB? And you can have a choice of pink sapphires for $16,500, or how about green emeralds for just $36,900? This next one is for the gents to live out the fantasy of being James Bond. It’s not a sports car but a sports car submarine, which will set you back just over $2 million. But at least you don’t just use it on the road - you can actually go underwater to avoid jams! We don’t want to forget the kids, so let’s start them while they are young with their own diamond dummy. It comprises 28 pave cut white diamonds and

can be for a boy or girl - priced at just $17,000. Flowers may not seem the most original of gifts, but what about ones dipped in gold? They retail at $65 each and, obviously, only a dozen will do. At the other end of the scale are the cheapest gifts. They say the best gifts are those which have been handmade, be they something crafted or baked and made with time and effort. But you may not be gifted enough to make your own, so what are the best-value presents? According to Money Saving Expert, it’s more about being imaginative than money.

The most popular gift idea was The 12 Dates of Christmas, which involves planning one day a month for the year to do something as a couple or family, which is free - maybe visit a museum, go for a picnic ... the list is endless. The ideas are fantastic, original and well worth a look. One in particular caught my eye, but if I received the Bling the Grim it would be placed somewhere irretrievable. Basically, the idea is to jazz up your cleaning products, paint them and make them more exciting to use - really? This column is about fashion so I should let you know about the best fashion gifts. For women, it seems that shoes, pyjamas and novelty jumpers are a sure winner, according to the Guardian And for men, say the Telegraph, it is man bags and slippers. Although not original, it seems we always go for what we know best.

a special event, maybe having your hair put up will transform your everyday style. You don’t need to have long hair for this because we put up even the shortest of hair lengths. There are so many quick and easy ways to change your look for a night out … curling what is normally straight, for example. Putting up hair will always give you a glamorous image, even with the most simple of outfits. It’s all about how you feel and how you want to be seen. So don’t just go for your run-of-the-mill, everyday look. Be brave and try something different. There is no need to spend hours in the salon, either. A quick, simple put-up can be done in less than half-an-hour. And if it’s more of an extravagant style you’re after, then 45 minutes is usual enough. But if you are doing the styling at home, make sure you have an idea in your head before you start. Don’t be rushing out the door with your hair only half-done because you’ve not planned

it well, or have run out of time. Do have plenty of root-booster spray, lacquer and hair gloss to hand. These are your essential products for anything from a blow-dry to curling to a home-made up-do. Make sure your hair is clean and wellconditioned, and calm frizzies with a serum before you actually start the process. If you are blow-drying, then don’t start from wet-through. Instead, rough-dry hair until 80% dry and then start your styling. And if you are curling hair, try to wash it the night before instead of on the day because slightlydirty hair curls better and also holds better. Finally, don’t forget to hold everything down with a mist of gel-spray to make sure you look your best from start to finish. However, if you need a helping hand, call your favourite stylist and he will be glad to give you that “party” look you’re after. But do hurry … we are at our busiest time of the year, too!

When the dolly lost a leg at Christmas!

THE toy retailers association recently unveiled its list of top-12 festive dream toys for children which, it says, retail at an average cost of under £12,

But this information, it seems, hasn’t reached those manufacturers advertising on our UK television screens. Parents are being held to ransom by the plaintive faces of their children, whose future development may well be blighted if they don’t receive the latest musthave gadget costing mega bucks. Certainly, many of the toys are well in excess of £60! It’s a far cry from my childhood, although one of the things young people dislike about us oldies seems to be that we “harp on” about the good old days ... as if! I must admit, though, when it came to Christmas and birthdays and amusing ourselves, things were very different. There wasn’t the same amount of money around, and we didn’t have grandparents who could indulge us the way we do our grandchildren. Not to mention the fact that there certainly wasn’t any television advertising - because of a lack of televisions, generally. And when commercial TV did arrive, it was usually things like toothpaste adverts that held our attention. The recent craze for loom bands took me back to one of my favourite occupations as a

young girl: French knitting. So simple when all you needed was an empty cotton reel, four pins to stick in and unwanted scraps of wool, which we cadged from almost anyone as there was always someone knitting a Fair Isle tank top or cardigan. It was actually a pretty pointless thing to do as it just produced a long, sausage-like strip of knitted wool, which you could sew together to make a sort of circular mat only. However, it was cheap and kept my sister and me occupied for hours. We also loved to play tin-can telephones at a time when we didn’t know what a telephone was. That was even

more simple: Two empty cans joined together with a piece of string. I held one up to my ear and my sister held the other one to her mouth and vice-versa! The Fifties were a time of intense activity and ingenuity. What we couldn’t make to play with, our fathers could and many a happy child woke up on Christmas morning to find a homemade desk or toy fort, with little soldiers. One of my school friends had a sweet shop, complete with tiny bottles filled with things like dolly mixtures. How I envied that! But my father did make me some stilts once, and I can remember being highly delighted. I was a sad child!

Some lucky little boys had mothers who were handy with a needle and made them cowboy or Indian outfits, or a Davy Crockett suit complete with fur hat. No one ever threw away their old prams because they could be commandeered for racing trolleys. That was one of the most popular activities for boys, together with bows and arrows, catapults, whips and tops, yoyos and football, where piles of jumpers would serve as goalposts. One prerequisite of the Christmas stocking was a selection box, which usually had a mesh cover over the chocolate bars, Even more popular was a smoker’s set made of

liquorice, with a pipe and candy cigarettes. There was modelmaking, when we made an immense mess with moulds and plaster to turn out something like a garden gnome; a John Bull printing set, when you got ink all over your fingers trying to place the letters on to wooden blocks with a pair of tweezers; Post Office sets, complete with rubber stamps and toy money; Airfix sets, which meant bedroom ceilings had unidentifiable objects hanging from them gathering dust for years, and kaleidoscopes with wonderful, colourful shapes. Mettoy toy typewriters were also a popular toy at that time. We

could pretend to be a secretary, and I can even remember having a nurse’s outfit. It was all a bit sexist because I can’t remember there being a doctor’s set for girls! I also loved those cardboard dolls with paper clothes, and I spent hours mixing and matching the outfits. Much more difficult for families to afford were Meccano, which also owned Hornby Trains, Dinky Toys and Bayko - all popular, if not quite-expensive children’s toys. It wasn’t until 1957 that Scaletrix came out, but that remains a really expensive toy, with some cars costing anything up to £70 today. We always had books for Christmas, usually Enid Blyton. And, of course, dolls and dolls’ prams, but the dolls never did much, unlike some of those today which seem like real babies. In fact, my sister’s doll lost a leg one Christmas. She was devastated and we had to take it to a dolls’ hospital for surgery the week after. Not sure if anaesthetic was needed! By the end of the Fifties, when we had outgrown all childish things, we were desperate for a Dansette record player for Christmas, and singles like Side Saddle by Russ Conway, and Cliff Richard’s Living Doll. But somehow, Christmas was never the same again! How many expats sitting in the sun in the Canaries remember those good old days?

Poinsettias can poison pets THE poinsettia is a beautiful Christmas plant, found in almost every home, shop and workplace.

It comes in a variety of colours and sizes, from pink to yellow, from mini to huge, and is stunning. But please be on guard because the plant comes from the spurge family and is highly toxic to animals and birds. Dr Tina Holscher, the vet attached to our German charity sponsor Aktiontier, says symptoms include vomiting, salivation, diarrhoea, muscle spasms and, later, kidney failure. So medical attention is required immediately if you think your pet has had a munch on this favourite Christmas plant. With Christmas fast-approaching, please think long, hard and carefully before giving a puppy as a pre-

sent. Remember, that cute little puppy is for life and not just the festive season. How heartless! Three desperate dogs, found abandoned by a heartless owner in a Costa del Silencio apartment, were in an extremely poor condition. Let’s hope they are lucky and find new homes so their pain and suffering will become a distant memory. Sweet music for all Our Christmas celebrations begin next Friday (19th Dec) with a piano concert by the London-based Royal School Of Music. They will be playing a variety of classics from Beethoven, Mozart, Kabalewsky, Schumann, Debussy, Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Cervantes. It will be held at Cabo Blanco Cultural Centre at 7.30pm, and a threeeuro donation per person will be charged on admittance, all takings to be donated to Accion del Sol. This is followed

by our Christmas dinner the next day (20th Dec) at 7.30pm at Tasca Tierras del Sur, in the centre of Granadilla, next to the church. The evening will include a delicious fayre, plus local wines, beers and soft drinks, and romantic tunes from Tomas will ensure a fantastic evening. The cost per person is 27 euros, and if you would like to make a reservation and pay a deposit to secure your booking, please call the refuge on 922 778 630 for more information. Your help wanted We would appreciate any towels, sheets or blankets to aid our dogs’ comfort. Please call 922 778 630 if you can help out in any way at the refuge. ‘Tis The Season to be exceptionally cruel JUST when you think you have seen it all ... we have been involved in some really unusual and disturbing cases of animal cruelty lately.

Tamo was found in the North, suspended from a motorway bridge. His ears had been cut to points with a blunt instrument and his tail cruelly docked. To make things worse he is blind. Thanks to a volunteer from Refugio Internacional, near Puerto de la Cruz, he has been nursed back to health, but is heartworm positive. Thanks to our kind supporters, we have been able to send 200 euros to the refuge to cover his treatment. We have also been looking for a permanent

home for Tamo here in the South, and think we may have found someone. We will keep you posted. Teo is another disturbing case. Found last Sunday in Gran Canaria, he had been stabbed in the head several

times and a screw inserted into his paw. At the time of writing he is stable and we are organising moving him here to Tenerife to get him back into good health. We feel it is time the authorities looked more

closely into bringing the perpetrators of such heinous acts to justice, instead of it being “just an animal”. Even if this is your view, is it not highly possible that such monsters can go on to torture humans? Worrying

times indeed. We are using the excess money from Tamo’s fund to buy a wheelchair for a dog found knocked down a couple of weeks ago. Noel is paralysed, but we don’t want to put him to sleep. He deserves better. I will write his story in more detail next week. For now, we just want to ask for your ongoing support so that we can carry on helping dogs like Tamo, Teo and Noel. Because without you, we simply can’t. Donations welcome at our charity shops, or via Paypal to livearico@ gmail.com Christmas raffle Want a chance of winning a great prize? By Jav LAND ROVER buffs not on the ball at this time of year might well hear that the new Land Rover Discovery Sport is a replacement for the Freelander.

But they will soon learn that there is far more to this Disco dancer than that. Yes, it is another Halewood-built off-roader, and a rival for the BMW X3 and Volvo XC60, costing up to £40,000. But Land Rover have made it longer and fitted five-plus-two seating to its more spacious cabin. They have also leant heavily on the Evoque for styling, and redefined it as a member of the emerging Discovery family, which stresses versatility and practicality. Land Rover’s 4x4 range has been dominated by the Evoque, whose 120,000-a-year sales more than double the initial volume perceived. The Freelander, closely related to the Evoque under the skin, was in danger of being glossed over, not least because its name carries little clout in the US or China.

12th December 2014 - 18th December 2014

Disco right on the beat!

The company also need a more modernlooking model to take on the X3 and XC60, while continuing to use existing manufacturing processes and share many common components. So here comes the Disco Sport, for which it is worth making a song and dance. The Sport is nowhere near an Evoque lookalike under the skin. True, it has the same front suspension and transverse-engined mechanical layout, and the steel chassis is nearly identical back to the Bpillar.

But there’s a new rear structure which extends the Sport’s length (by 91mm) and wheelbase (by 80mm) and introduces a sophisticated new multi-link rear suspension which, along with the extra length, helps preserve interior space. This means the Sport’s second row of seats can move back and forth, to make a huge boot or provide second-row knee-room close to that of a Range Rover. For the first six to eight months of production, the only engine will be the 188bhp SD4 diesel,

complete with the ZF’s silky, nine-speed automatic gearbox - shared with the Evoque and Freelander. Traction has been enhanced by continued improvements to the Terrain Response system, which configures throttle, gear-selection, torque-distribution and ABS/traction control in four modes, according to conditions. In less a year, the Sport will adopt JLR’s advanced four-cylinder engine range made in their new Wolverhampton works, which should improve fuel consump-

tion and cut CO2 emissions. A two-wheel-drive version will then become available, and the entry price will drop from today’s £32,395 for a base manual model to just under £30,000 for the two-wheel-drive version. But it is clear from the start that the design team have made this an obvious Land Rover and not a Range Rover or Land Rover. It’s not exactly plush or posh, and the theme is logic rather than luxury. Yet a big centre screen supplies a new infotain-

ment system, with new levels of remote-control versatility. And the ultra-comfortable front seats, the surrounding trim and the amply-proportioned second-row sit high enough to give occupants an excellent forward view. The sixth and seventh seats, plainly for youngsters not quite in their teens, fold into the boot floor when not needed. This isn’t the softestriding off-roader around and its firm damping does a fair bit to justify the “Sport” part of its name. But it’s quite nifty, covering 0-62mph in 8.4sec, with a top speed of 117mph and 44.8mpg economy. Its polished interior, infotainment system and impressive off-road ability create a pleasing all-round package. The Disco Sport’s combination of beauty, versatility and good driving characteristics could bring a new sophistication to this class. Land Rover’s biggest problem could be what to concentrate on making, when Evoque demand is still so so high. But they have cope with this niggle for some years - and they seem to enjoy it!

Ferrari’s fearsome road blaster THIS is the production version of Ferrari’s uberexclusive Sergio, which has been secured by the SBH Royal Auto Gallery in the United Arab Emirates’ capital of Abu Dhabi for an estimated 2.5m euros.

And even if you have saved a good few euros in your piggy bank for that special Christmas treat, don’t bother calling Ferrari because the other five versions have already been snapped

up. The Sergio, penned by Pininfarina, was created to mark the 60-year relationship between the Italian design house and Ferrari.

Its name is also taken from the company founder’s son, Sergio Pininfarina, who sealed the long-standing relationship between the

two Italian brands. Needless to say, the Pininfarina styling is the real focus, giving a handful of owners the opportunity to enjoy

concept-car styling in a road-legal machine. The Sergio, based on the mechanics of a Ferrari 458 Spider, was previewed as a concept at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Slight visual tweaks were necessary to make the car road-legal, including a windscreen. But all the best parts of the concept car appear to have made it through to production, including the eye-catching, forward-swept rollbar and the stylish black element, which defines the profile. The road version also preserves its open-top cabin, transparent boomerang headlights and

two-tone exterior colour theme. Fully-functioning rear lamp clusters have been added, as well as a roadlegal exhaust system. The Sergio also shares with the 458 its 597bhp, 4.5-litre naturally-aspirated V8 engine, powerful enough to get from 0-62mph in three seconds. The example delivered to the first owner in Abu Dhabi featured contrasting red stitching in the cabin, as well as Alcantara inserts on the seats and carbon-fibre on the doors. Natch! Can’t wait to see it roaring past our new office, just down the road from the old one!

The old boy strikes again

By Roscoe CD Tenerife 1 Racing Santander 0

II’S the oldest adage in football: beware the old boys. They always come back to haunt you, and the script was certainly written for Vitolo when his faced his former charges.

A week after Icodborn Iriome struck the winning goal for Lugo against Tenerife, so Vitolo did the same to the side who gave him topflight football. It has been a while since Vitolo pulled on a Racing jersey, but this was his first match since leaving the club and he played like a man on a mission. He has been Tenerife’s best player for a while now after a sticky start. Maybe it was the expectation that surrounded his long-awaited return, but he just didn’t seem to be on the bunny at the beginning of the season. He started on the bench, looked a yard off the pace, and his trademark passing was nowhere to be seen. Position 1

Vitolo simply doesn’t miss from 12 yards. This spot-kick was his third of the season, and I cannot find a record of him ever missing in a competitive match. He scored five out of five for Panathinaikos and also all five for PAOK, and he is perfect from three efforts for Tenerife. In fact, I believe he has scored just one goal from open play against Celta Vigo - and that was during his early days in Santa Cruz. Vitolo’s goal always looked like being enough, although RacPoints PLD Won Draw Lost F A ing did finish strongly. Deep into injury-time, 33 16 9 6 1 27 13 Carlos Abad pulled off 32 16 8 8 0 21 10 the save of his career to 30 16 9 3 4 24 13 keep the visitors at bay. 29 16 8 5 3 18 12 The young keeper is starting to find his feet 27 16 8 3 5 23 19 and, dare I say it, looks a better prospect than 26 16 7 5 4 25 23 the injured Roberto, 26 16 8 2 6 22 23 who must be kicking the 24 16 6 6 4 26 24 cat. 22 16 6 4 6 21 18 It was a pleasing win, a clean-sheet, and it 21 16 5 6 5 15 17 moves Tenerife out 21 16 6 3 7 13 17

If anything, he was trying too hard to impress, perhaps. But those early struggles are gone and, along with Suso, he is now the first name on the team sheet. There was a real feeling before the match that Tenerife would get the job done. The performance against Lugo showed the side had the spirit, and that was again on display against Racing. I’ve noticed that under Alvaro Cervera, Tenerife are a spurt side. They are capable of going on

a poor run and then, suddenly, it just turns around. And when they find their groove, or, more importantly, their determination, they take some stopping. Racing did okay and I’m sure, injuries aside, they will be safe this season. They have a good spine and a bit of spirit. That said, Tenerife were just that bit better last weekend. Yes, it took a penalty to separate the sides, but the hosts were good value for it.

of the drop zone. Delighted captain Suso Santana said: “We have ended the poor run and hope to continue forward from here. During the first minutes we started well, and we just kept getting better and creating more chances than them. The end result is well deserved. “I felt we threw everything at Racing and we have our reward when Vitolo scores. The goal was important and we finished the job. “We cannot rest on this win as we have to follow the same lines of work this weekend and see if we can get another result - I feel we compete very well and we are very solid.” The Racing match saw Uli Dávila given a rare start and, though he didn’t score, he played much better. He will get the nod again against promotion chasing Alcorcon “I needed this match and the team needed

this victory,” he said. “It was for the fans. Every game is complicated and tough in the Second Division, so to win a game is good. “The three points is what you always want to take. You prepare all week to play, and I want to play, but you never know in the end if you will - and that is down to the coach. “Against Racing we had more space, and when they were tired we settled better. I have heard the rumours about me leaving, but I do not plan to leave Tenerife, “I have a contract until June and want to stay here and do something important. I want to help the team out of this slump.” Davila’s words countered some talk, as we brought you here last week, that the Mexican may be moved on. But with star striker Diego Ifran still not having a Spanish residencia (that may not come through until March), there have been juggling problems behind the scenes. The plan was for Ifran to become “Spanish”, thus freeing up a non-Spanish squad place. That plan has sailed, and with it the idea to bring Juan Carlos Garcia into the fray. As I wrote last week, he has trained well, was keen to stay and was fiercely popular among the players. But Ifran’s situation has killed Garcia’s stay before he ever played a match. He has gone back to Wigan and is expected to be loaned out again in a few weeks. Uli Davila even posted a picture of him with Garcia, Ifran and Hugo Alvarez, which wished him well. It ends what has been the strangest of strange stories.

The Pub are Speared! AS promised in last week’s round up, I can report some hefty giant-killing in the John Lowe team handicap knockout.

This really is an excellent competition, and it gives the chance for the weaker teams, if you will pardon the expression, to take on the big boys and, maybe, snatch a bit of glory later in the season. It also provides an opportunity to play different teams, go to other venues, meet new people and make new friends. And that is what this darts league is all about. Not too sure, though, if Premier Leaguers The Pub, made any

new friends as they faced a Division 2 outfit, the aptly-named Spear Chuckers. Turning up with only four players and a huge 360-point deficit didn’t do them any good, and they were promptly dumped out of the competition, losing the

good. But it’s a bit soul-destroying, being 300 points behind when your opponent checks out on 170. Well done Craig. So the Chippers go through with a 5-2 win, as do Phoenix Bar after beating plucky Palms Sports Bar, whose 315-point head start appeared to be too much for Phoenix. Palms took a 1-0 lead and Phoenix had to up a gear - and boy did they! Mitch fired in three maximums, as did Bubbles in a 26dart leg that gave him a three-dart average of 104. Phil who? So the Phoenix earn a last-eight spot, as do Waterfall Warriors, who came back from 3-1 down to beat Phoenix Flights. Trap Door’s league form suggested they

Joyful Jay takes advantage PREMIER League superstars certainly had a bad time this week, with many of them not firing on all cylinders, and some looking at a lengthy spell in the treatment room.

This will now prove a difficult juggling act for

all of us budding Oasis Fm Fantasy football league managers, especially as we approach the busy festive period. As there were no real stand-out performances this week, the point-scoring team of the week is a proper mix-and-match from clubs across the league, But QPR did manage to sneak two players in. The rest of the players came from Hull, Aston Villa, Spurs, Liverpool,

Stoke, Man City, West Ham, Man Utd and Newcastle. At the top of the table, Frank Devaney’s Toffee’s held on to top spot, despite a poor scoring week. However, the chasing pack didn’t take of advantage of this and he now leads by 17 points, if Frank can hold the spot into the New Year, he may have a chance of league glory. But he needs to keep an eye on

his team for injuries and suspensions. To reflect the poor points’ period, the team of the week goes to Jay Merrick’s Los Pollos Hermanos, with a respectable 55 points, assisted by goals from Benteke and Bony. The January transfer window is not too far away, but don’t forget you can tweak your team weekly with a couple of free transfers. So make sure you keep

logging in and checking on the status of your team and players to

make sure they are at full strength for these busy few weeks.

Pink aim for bronze AS we approach the Christmas break in the Direct Telecom Pool League, things are looking rosy for Inn the Pink A.

It will be difficult to chase down the top two in Division One, but they are looking good for a third place finish. On Tuesday they hosted Waterfall Rebels, who have been on a good run themselves recently. The home team raced into a 5-0 lead, but the Rebels finally nabbed a frame through Adie and quickly added two more. The Rebels were clearly missing captain Bubbles and, though they launched a comeback, the home team were always going to take another three points. The teams behind them lost a little ground as the PalmsPhoenix battle went the way of the Torviscas teams. The Phoenix suffered a rare defeat away at Palms Bar B in a close match, with neither team giving an inch. Palms B have been nicking wins recently, and maybe their late-frame mentality helped them just get over the line - inspired as well by Graham, the league’s most in-

form player. Meanwhile, in Los Abrigos, Palms A were in top form against a struggling Phoenix Potters. The home side actually made a fine start, taking their chances to sneak ahead 3-1 at the pieand-chips break. But there must have been something in the gravy because Palms roared back. After mopping it up, they then mopped up the frames, taking six on the trot for an 8-4 victory, with Penguin getting a long overdue hat-trick. Treehouse A, who are going nicely in fifth spot, faced a tough game in Los Cristianos at Dreamers A, who had a superb win last week and were full of confidence. But Mark and the visitors are a good team, who know how to get a result. There was nothing between them on the night, though, and it seemed fitting that the game ended in a draw. It was a good night for the teams from Exiles, both taking three points. Exiles B, at home against Tenerife Hammers C, were always in control and secured a 9-3 win, which was enough to move them above their opponents. Exiles A went to Amarilla Golf to face Terrace Bar A, and it was another night on

The two top teams never looked like dropping points against opposition from the bottom of the table. Hammers A, who are chasing Gaffers A down, played Atmosphere 13 and it looked like as though it would be a whitewash. but the Hammers’ Fritzel dropped a game, losing to his younger son!

Well done Ryan! However, it was merely a consolation frame for Atmosphere. Gaffers A were away at Peacocks and, though the scoreline was a little more respectable, the league leaders still had a comfortable win. In Division Two, it was a quiet night in terms of games. But the tie of the night saw league leaders Sporting Jester A take on second-place Bluebell A. Bragging rights

By Adi Benson WE have emerged from a period in which the clubs have played three times in a sevenday period in the Barclays Premier League.

It’s obviously not what they want with the festive period about to descend on us and the games coming even thicker and faster. And at this time of the year, the bookings start to mount up and injury and fitness concerns kick in. This week I’ve a special challenger on Beat Benson. it’s the old ball and chain. The wife (and our fashion correspondent Ruth) believes she can beat me. The loser washes up until Valentine’s Day so wish me luck! Burnley v Southampton The Clarets have had a slight purple patch, picking up a few points and a couple of victories, but that came to an end last weekend. They never did manage to climb out of the relegation zone but they will be looking to get back on track here, especially knowing that their opponents have just had a tough few games. It was welldocumented that the Saints hadn’t faced a real challenge in the league, but the last three games have seen them take on some bigger clubs. Unfortunately, they failed the test, losing all three. They should have beaten Man Utd but didn’t take their chances, but they can get back on track right here! Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Away win Chelsea v Hull So Mourinho’s Chelsea are beatable. I did say in last week’s column that I thought they would lose sooner or later but I was surprised it was against Newcastle. They will be keen to ensure lightning doesn’t strike twice, and being at home gives them a big

advantage. It has been a difficult few weeks for Hull and positive results have been hard to come by. And this fixture will certainly be no different. They could do with an easier game, but they just have to get it out of the way. Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Home win Crystal Palace v Stoke Palace, still dangerously close to the relegation zone, will be trying to get points to put space between themselves and their rivals. This gives them a good chance of adding to their tally but they will have to be defensively strong and not allow themselves to get bullied. I said Stoke would beat Arsenal last week because I thought they had a win coming after going close against Liverpool and United - and I got it spot-on! They played good, intelligent football and a repeat performance here will see them head back to the Potteries with all the points. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Draw Leicester v Man City Poor old Leicester cannot buy a win, and they will not relish this fixture, especially as their opponents look to close the gap on Chelsea. But if they could pull off a win, the confidence levels would soar and give the club a much-needed boost in their quest to survive.

Just three points now separate City from leaders Chelsea, and they will now look to take points from every game to keep the pressure on. Aguero’s injury is a blow, though, and if they can’t replace his goals, they could struggle. But they have strength in depth and should be okay. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Away win Sunderland v West Ham Draws against Chelsea and Liverpool will have Sunderland believing they can get a result, especially as they were based on strong, defensive displays. What is worrying, though, is their attacking play and their inability to score goals. If they can address that, they will stay up. West Ham are proving to be a resilient, surprise package this season. Some shrewd acquisitions in the summer have added depth to the squad and the form of Downing, in particular, should stand them in good stead. But there won’t be a fairytale fourth-spot finish. Prediction: Draw Beat Benson: Draw West Brom v Aston Villa The Baggies are five points behind their rivals going into this game and will want to narrow that gap, never mind the bragging rights a win would bring. But they will have to up their game because they are not

playing well. A lack of goals and too many draws are starting put them under relegation pressure. Villa sit mid-table but have had an up-anddown season, starting well but dropping right off the form table. Yet a couple of good results recently has galvanised their position for now. There is still a long way to go, though, and Paul Lambert knows he needs investment in his ageing squad come January. Prediction: Draw Beat Benson: Draw Arsenal v Newcastle After a dreadful performance last week, Arsenal redeemed themselves with a good midweek Champions League win. But they are facing a side full of confidence. Sanchez has carried them in recent weeks, but Ramsey is now back among the goals, and Podolski must surely get a start after a brace against Galatasary. But you can never secondguess Wenger. The Magpies ended Chelsea’s unbeaten run and got back to winning ways, and maybe the fans are starting to warm again to Alan Pardew. In fairness, they played perfect counterattacking football and were strong in defence. If they can replicate that performance, then Arsenal are there for the taking. Prediction: Home win

Beat Benson: Away win The Dog & Duck v The Black Swan How Man United managed to beat Southampton is a mystery. It was as bad as I have seen them play all season, and that is saying something. They were a shambles in defence and gave the ball away far too often. They need to improve all over the pitch if they are too hold on to a topfour spot. Fortunately, Liverpool are just as bad, crashing out of the Champions League with a lacklustre display against Basel. Will Brenda be fired if Liverpool lose this one? This is a derby match, though, and you can guarantee both sides will be up for this, I’m not sure it will be like a Sunday league game, as Gary Neville said. But it

should be good for the neutrals. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Home win Swansea v Spurs Swansea are still holding on towards the top, but they will not be happy with how they played against West Ham last weekend, especially after taking the lead. Their opponents in this game are just a point behind them, and they will not want them leapfrogging them in the table. Spurs may be a little leggy after a Europa League game last night (Thursday) and the manager may rest a few players. But this is an evenly-matched affair and Swansea are dangerous on the break, the Spurs defence will have their work cut out. Prediction: Away win Beat Benson: Home win Everton v QPR It’s not been a great season so far for Roberto Martinez and his team, and I can’t help thinking it may be the European distraction. They do get an extra day’s rest, though, with playing on a Monday night, and they will look to use home advantage. They need Lukaku to start repaying his transfer fee and getting himself on the scoresheet. QPR are out of the bottom three after a well-deserved victory against Burnley and if they can carry the momentum on, dependent on other results, they could start to open a gap up on their rivals. But will they have recovered from their Christmas party! Prediction: Home win Beat Benson: Away win
