When and why you have to update your driving licence Contiuned from front. The changes are the latest tweaks to a European Union system, first announced in 2006 and implemented exactly two years ago. The creation of an EU driving licence was designed to replace more than 100 different paper and plastic licences used by more than 320 million motorists across the 28 European member states. The credit-card-style licences, with specific security features, are designed to improve movement across European borders. They have also helped eliminate driving-licence fraud, and made it easier for banned drivers to have their suspensions upheld in foreign countries. The first national changes to the January 2013 system come into effect after the weekend, and thousands of people in Tenerife have been scrambling around to get their licences upgraded. In brief, if you have held a Spanish Residencia for two years or more you must, from Monday, have a Spanish EU licence. From now on in Spain, when your licence is updated, you need to pass a simple medical to prove you are fit enough to hold a current driving licence. The application process itself hasn´t changed, and the licence still has to be verified in the country of origin before the exchange can take place. The documentation required is: *Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión (Residencia) *In date Passport *Photo card driver’s licence or old paper licence. *Photograph (DNI sized 32 x 26 mm) *Medical certificate With regards to obtaining medicals, these must be applied for in the registered medical centres, called Reconocimientos Médicos. There are quite a few around, and the medicals cost around 50 euros.
Some of the confusion this week has centred on the current photo ID driving licences, which have an expiry date. On them, point 4a is the date of issue and 4b the date the card expires. This is what has caused the confusion because the actual expiry date of your driving licence is on the back of the card, and on the paper part of your licence, and is usually the day before your 70th birthday. Point 4b states that when the current photocard expires, the photo alone needs updating - thus the standard 10-year validity on the card in the same way as a passport. The new legislation covers licences which have more than 15 years to run. Canarian Weekly motoring columnist Emma Swain told us: “Most people’s licence expire when they are 70. That can be seen on the reverse of the licence. If there are still
15 years or more to run, then they are obliged to change them for a ‘Spanish’ one if they have resided here for two years. “For people who have a licence with less than 15 years to run, for example, those who are nearing 70 are obliged to change them at the time of renewal. BUT Traffico advises you to do this beforehand because you will get an extended period by having your medical.” The new law has caused some confusion for the Swallows. If you have been living in Spain for less than two years, you do not have to make the change until you have been here for that period. But what if you have been staying here and have been using a ‘UK’ licence? “If you have been registered on the padron - and this is where the padron comes into it and you have been registered for two years or more, then the same
rules apply.” Emma told us: “You are classed as a resident if you are registered, even though you don’t have a green paper residencia. If you aren’t registered and you just have a temporary white NIE form like a lot of Swallows, then you are classed as a tourist.” So, in theory, if you
don’t have a residencia but have an NIE, you are not registered at the Town Hall (padron) and you have a valid UK driving licence and are stopped by the police, you should have no problems. The new regulations are EU directives and will be upheld by all member countries. Some cynics will see
the new regulations as a way of raising more money, but there are obvious benefits. The 10-year medical ruling is a step in the right direction, and it’s fair to say that driving-test requirements differ from country to country. And then there is the justice argument. Under European law, a banned driver will be banned in all member countries. The updated system makes it harder for law-breakers to evade justice. The new system is bound to see more road controls over the first few weeks and, according to Trafico, failure to comply will result in a fine, understood to be around 200 euros. Trafico will not be sending out reminders to “foreign” licenceholders, and it is a driver’s responsibility to make the correct changes. Remember, in the eyes of the law, ignorance is no defence.

Another luxurious A ADEJE is set to have another topclass hotel, the Barceló Corales Suites Resort, which will open in 2018 and create up to 300 jobs.
The 30m-euro project was given the green light this week, and some of the Islands’ most important people praised the project at a press conference. Canarian President Paulino Rivero was de-
lighted with the new proposal, saying: “Adeje is a borough where things are done well, in a quality manner, and where they are going in the right direction.” Last week, authorities witnessed the laying of the first stone of the new complex, between La Enramada and La Caleta. It is being funded and built via a partnership between the Flanders 10 Invest company and Barceló Hotels & Resorts, who will run the hotel.
Operation Captura finds another Tenerife fugitive STEPHEN Blundell a drugs baron who admitted organising a £1m heroin plot but fled to Tenerife before sentencing, surrendered to the police here on Monday.
In his absence, the 36-year-old, from Halewood in Liverpool, was jailed for nine years and eight months last October. But, as the National Crime Agency’s Hank Cole said: “The law enforcement net was tightening and I believe he handed himself in when he realised his days on the run were numbered.” Blundell, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply heroin in 2013, was named as one of Britain’s most-wanted fugitives and listed in the Crimestoppers’ Captura campaign to track down criminals hiding abroad. The NCA said he controlled a 14-strong
gang which supplied “huge amounts” of the drug from Merseyside to the South West. Among the gang was a Cornish grandmother, caught transporting £50,000 of heroin under four pasties in her shopping bag. Devon and Cornwall Police targeted Blundell as part of an investigation into the supply of drugs to areas including Bodmin, Exeter, Tiverton and Torquay. The NCA had gathered intelligence that he was in Tenerife shortly before he turned himself over to police. Blundell will be ex-
tradited to Britain to serve the near 10-year sentence from which he fled. He could also face a further penalty for skipping bail. Devon and Cornwall Police said Blundell enjoyed the highlife, wearing designer clothes and driving luxury cars, including, Audis, BMWs, Volkswagen 4x4s and a Porsche Boxer. He also spent £11,000 in cash on foreign travel in a threemonth period, yet had no obvious income or employment. Detective Constable Jason Braund told the Liverpool Echo in 2013: “He lived in very
swanky, rented apartments and had access to high-value sports cars. He maintained a lavish lifestyle and there were exotic holidays with girlfriends. “In his wardrobe, everything was designer - it was all top-of-therange stuff. He was living the lavish lifestyle and it would appear that as soon as he got that cash, it was being spent.” In the conspiracy, Blundell involved his cousins Paul Blundell, 24, and Ryan Morgan, 29, as well as 24-yearold drug courier John Pogue, all of Halewood. Pogue’s Toyota Avensis was tracked driving to Devon some 42 times between November 2009, and September 2010. When he was eventually stopped, officers recovered a £25,000 block of heroin concealed in the glove box. If each trip was linked to supplying heroin, police believe Pogue could have trafficked as much as £1m of the drug.
Blundell was also convicted in his absence of paying for a corrupt court official to wipe points from his driving licence illegally. He was among 28 drivers faced with disqualification who paid cash to middle-men, with forms sent from Liverpool magistrates’ court to the DVLA in Swansea, requesting that convictions be deleted. Hank Cole, the NCA’s Head of International Operations, said: “Blundell would have been constantly looking over his shoulder after his mugshot appeared across Spain as part of the Captura ‘Unlucky Thirteen’ campaign. “It was only a matter of time before he was caught because the Spanish National Police had been carrying out intelligence-led operations in Tenerife. “The law enforcement net was tightening, and I believe he handed himself in when he realised his days on the run were numbered.”
The NCA international chief added: “We will continue to work with our partners to pursue fugitives wherever they are on the world. “And Spain is not a safe haven because 64 fugitives have been caught there since Captura was launched, and many more have been linked to other operations.” Crimestoppers chairman Lord Michael Ashcroft added: “I am delighted to see that, once again, the collaborative work between Crimestoppers, the NCA and the Spanish Police bears fruit as we see another wanted criminal off our streets. “The media and the public play a big role in putting pressure on these individuals, who continue to think they can evade capture. “Stephen Blundell handing himself in to the authorities is an example that, eventually, you will be caught - or you will have no choice but to give yourself up.”

Adeje hotel on way Present at the event were representatives from both companies, Willy Deceunick from Flanders 10 and Simón Pedro Barceló, copresident of the Grupo Barceló. Also there were Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, Paulino Rivero, and Tenerife-based national government representative Guillermo Díaz. The Barceló Corales Suites Resort will have two main buildings, one for adults, with 121 junior suites, and the other a family-based section, with 114 apartments. There will be three communal pools, 51 small private pools, four restaurants and three bars. Deceunick said the project will respect all the environmental regulations of the area, which he considers to be a mark of the zone’s quality. Both he and Barceló also praised the “involvement of all the relevant administrations
(regional and insular) and the Adeje Council in helping us move forward this project, which will improve the tourism offer and create jobs”. Adeje Mayor Rod-
ríguez Fraga said: “Adeje is one of the best tourist destinations in the world. It is both attractive to visitors as well as creating wealth and jobs locally. “We are happy to support projects such as this - projects which improve the lives of our people and those who visit us.” He added that he and his Council would continue to work with companies proposing projects which support professionalism and quality job creation. Rivero also praised Flanders and Barceló for “this quality product”, adding that the government were de-
lighted to support projects which improved the competitive nature of the tourism sector which, in turn, generates wealth in the Ca-
narias. He also praised the work being carried out in Adeje, saying: “Adeje is a borough where things are well done.”
Rivero also lauded the quality and direction of the borough, and the manner in which it looks to the medium and longterm in planning.

Spain’s double act alongside Andorra SPAIN and Andorra have begun a campaign against tax evasion, and they also plan to eliminate double taxation.
To that end, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Andorra which, he believes, is an important step forward for both countries. He also says it reflects the “strong” relations between the countries, and that the tax agreement represented an important move towards tax standardisation by Andorra with its neighbouring countries.
The Spanish PM said a prime example of the strong ties uniting his country with Andorra was the fact that onethird of the population of Andorra is Spanish, and that Spanish exports account for 62% of foreign trade in the country.
Rajoy highlighted the “common dynamic” which has guided the governments of the two countries in recent years. “It’s none other than a reformist intention to modernise our economies, create quality jobs and improve the lives of our citizens,” he stressed.
“This is a political imperative of the highest order, on which government leaders must focus wholeheartedly.” Rajoy added: “The enormous reformist efforts undertaken in Spain and Andorra are already producing unquestionable results. “In Spain, the outlook has changed enormously since the start of this parliament and that is not a question of perspective but rather an irrefutable fact, backed up by objective data. “Whereas Spain was mired in deep recession in 2011, it is expected that we will again lead the field in terms of growth among the major Eurozone countries in 2015.” In his opinion: “No-
body doubts the strength of our economy today,” and the latest unemployment figures has given him renewed spirit. “It¡s the best piece of news we’ve seen in the last few days because the number of people out of work has fallen at its fastest rate in 16 years, and jobs are being created for the first time in seven years.” But Rajoy is adamant his government’s main objective will continue to be “our efforts to combat unemployment and create jobs”. The PM praised the “historic fiscal and tax reform” recently undertaken by Andorra, which represents “a very important step forward in the necessary
process of fiscal standardisation by Andorra with its neighbouring countries”. He also highlighted last week’s opening of the Seu d’Urgell-Andorra Airport to commercial traffic, the signing of an agreement on international road transport and the recent improvement works on the road linking Andorra with Spain. He believes these are all “very important steps for improving transport inter-connections” between the countries. Rajoy also feels strongly that “closer ties between Andorra and the rest of Europe will not only benefit the principality but, indeed, all Europeans”.
EasyJet on time and flying high!
BUDGET airlines easyJet and Monarch, both daily visitors to Tenerife, are the only British companies in the top20 list of the most punctual carriers in the world.
New statistics rated airlines based on punctuality, and not one major US airline was included - and neither were British Airways or Virgin Atlantic. But easyJet were 14th and Monarch 19th. In a report published by OAG - an aviation data service which provides flight schedules worldwide - Latvia’s little-known airBaltic was tops for “on-time” performance, followed by Hawaiian Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Iberia and Norwegian Air Shuttle. Spanish carrier Iberia, German flagship airline Lufthansa and Dutch national airline KLM and Finnair also featured in the top-20 list. To compile its rankings, OAG analysed 200 operators globally in terms of available seat miles in 2014 (a measure of airline capacity that accounts for distance travelled) and those which operated more than 30,000 scheduled flights last year.

A load of hot air!
THERE are not many things I hate about Tenerife. Our Spanish cousins could drive a little better and learn how to use a roundabout.
I’d like a law banning sweaty, topless men from walking into bars and one sweet day, the Manaña philosophy will bite the dust. Talking of dust, that is what I hate: Calimas, or Coolimas as I call them in the winter. I’ve never known a winter like it. They are bad enough in the summer, when the heat turns the south into the Sahara, but at this time of year they are unbearable. This week’s effort knocked me for six, and I know I’m not the only one who has been confined to bed. You know it’s serious when the women stop calling it Man Flu. Being a Weymouth
boy, I’m rather at home with the sand. As an ankle-biter, I swallowed bucket-loads of it. It just goes with the joys of playing on the beach every day during those balmy, kiddie summers. But this stuff? You can’t shift it. The whole Island needs a hosing down, or a serious Dysoning. The last few winters have been quite cloudy and cool. I’ve sensed a real climate shift on our Island recently, and a few weeks ago I spoke with an old Canarian. He’s in his eighties and he was essentially telling me that the cool winters were always the norm when he was young. Even the summers were not as hot as they are now. “Why is that?” I asked him. “Tourist development” was the scoffed answer. I’m sure us Johnny Foreigners are to blame for lots of things, but surely not the weather. I’m dying to know how we created more Coolimas!

Dear Editor, I have recently spent 13 days in Candeleria hospital. I entered the health system as an emergency patient at the urgencias clinic at Los Cristianos and was transferred by ambulance, first to Hospiten Sur in Las Americas and, ultimately, to Candelaria. At each of these centres, and in the ambulances, I was treated with considerable professionalism, care, kindness and compassion by dedicated and friendly staff, and I wish to express my gratitude to everyone concerned with my treatment. I cannot imagine receiving better attention and care anywhere. Tenerife should be very proud of its wonderful hospital and associated services. Bob Adair
In last week’s letters’ page, we were asked if anyone had managed to swim from Tenerife to La Gomera...
Dear Editor I thought you might like to publish this picture. I live on Golf del Sur and have never seen a hedgehog here before! In fact, I have never seen one on the Island. Ralph Miles
Dear Editor, I wonder if you can pass this suggestion to Titsa buses’ management? Everyone has heard of Palm Mar, but no one is able to visit because there are no buses from Los Cristianos to this resort. It would only be a 10-minute ride, and I am sure a bus route would be very popular with holiday-makers. Dot, Los Cristianos
Dear Editor In answer to enquiry about swimming from La Gomera to Tenerife, about seven years ago I and many others watched the two men (I think they were Spanish) who had just swam from La Gomera to Los Cristianos. The cafe bar Cheringito, opposite the harbour car park, made a welcome for them. Sue Dehmel
Dear Editor, Long-distance Spanish swimmer David Meca did the Tenerife to La Gomera swim in 2001, and he also swam from Tenerife to Gran Canaria in 2002. There are some fantastic pictures of his swim by Sergio Hanquet, a Belgian underwater photographer based in South Tenerife, in which you can see Meca swimming with whales and dolphins along the way. He has also completed the Alcatraz to San Francisco swim, and the Spanish mainland to Ibiza. He’s quite a champ! Cliodna O’Flynn

Adeje backing Dzogchen International community SINCE it began operating in 2013, the international Dzamling Gar Global Centre for the Dzogchen International community, based in Playa Paraíso, has run a large number of activities.
In general, they focused on our evolution as people, as beings, and overcoming personal shortcomings. Last December the Rinpoche Dzogchen master, Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche, returned to the borough having completed a number of diverse projects and visits worldwide. Under the ‘Adeje Living Together’ umbrella, Adeje Council has welcomed these projects as part of the way forward in the creation of a society based on mutual equality and respect. And Dzogchen International consider fundamental their participation in local events, where they can make contacts and develop their links with the community, which are
of mutual benefit. At many Adeje events, and others which were based on the Island throughout 2014, the
community offered displays of dance, music and song, to the delight of their audiences. And, as is traditional,
members of the public have usually been invited to take part in the ‘Pu Yana’ dance at the end of any demon-
stration. It is a Tibetan song which celebrates the good luck participants enjoy in receiving the teachings, and
it is sung to bring happiness, prosperity and long life. Just some of the events the centre’s members took part in included the Cultural Fusion event in Adeje, a day of Traditional Games and Dances in El Fraile, the I Intercultural Exchange day in La Laguna and the Adeje Harmonious Living Together Adeje 10/10 campaign. They also performed during celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the twinning of Adeje and German town Unterhaching and, most recently, at the celebration of the International Day for Persons with Disabilities in Los Olivos. Along with these activities, the centre offers Tibetan dance and singing sessions most afternoons at their Playa Paraíso centre for those who wish to participate. While all this was ongoing here, Ricochet Namkhai Norbu was travelling and teaching this ancient form of learning in India, Singapore, Spain, Brazil, Peru, Italy, the US, Argentina, México and Australia.

Adeje honours San Sebastián WITH Christmas and the Three Kings’ celebrations out of the way, Adeje is now ready for the next annual fiesta to honour the town’s co-patron, San Sebastián, on Monday and Tuesday (19-20th Jan).
This is one of the most popular and engaging fiestas in Tenerife, the highlight being the bathing of horses and other four-legged mounts at La Caleta’s La Enramada beach. Culture Councillor Nayra Medina Bethencourt says: “San Sebastián is a perfect coming together of people who live in Adeje and those visiting the borough. “And the Plaza de San Sebastián in La Caleta is the perfect stage for this celebration of harmonious co-existence.” This year, too, the borough begins to cel-
ebrate the 100th year of the presence of the statue of San Sebastián, which is carried ceremoniously to the sea. It was brought to Adeje in 1916 by the parish priest of the time, Eulogio Gutiérrez Estévez. The celebrations begin on Monday with a two-day, open-air exhibition of municipal photographs. The “pinchos” competition also returns. Pinchos are small tapas on a cocktail stick, cheap and tasty, and ideal for eating on the
street. You can vote for your favourite pincho from 7pm to midnight on the night. Mass, with the Santa Ana folklore group in honour of San Sebastián, will be celebrated at 8pm, followed by a procession with the Adeje Municipal Band, and fireworks. There will also be a “Parrandas” evening with small music groups playing in public, among them the Paranda Boleros de Armeñime, GF La Diata, AC Cultural Imoque, the Parranda
El Mesturao and the Adeje Municipal Folklore group. The actual San Sebastián feast day is on Tuesday, and events begin at midday with Holy Mass in honour of the saint, sung by the Santa Úrsula de Adeje parochial choir. The procession, featuring his image, then moves outside and takes the pilgrims down to La Enramada beach, where the crowds will be waiting to see the traditional bathing of the horses and, quite often, a few
donkeys and maybe a camel or two. This fiesta, steeped in local traditions, was first celebrated here in the 18th century. Over the years, country people and local Adeje farmers and beyond continued with their devotions to the saint in a particular and special way. Many have attributed miracles to the statue of San Sebastián, including cures and favours granted. Given that up to 20,000 people take part in the celebrations every year, the council has made
sure there will be more than adequate security cover, with personnel from the Policia Local, the Civil Protection Unit, the Sea Rescue service, ambulances and health professionals. Please take note of any access restrictions, on the streets or on the beach, in advance of the procession because they are in place for the public’s security. Some parking restrictions will be in place to facilitate free flow of traffic and allow people to walk along the streets. There will also be a zone cordoned off for farm animals taking part in the festivities. People are also reminded that they should come in time to park and walk, wear clothes and shoes that are comfortable, use sun cream (particularly with children) and bring water. If you are bringing you own pets/animals, they must be on a lead - and do bring food and water for them as well!

Las Americas is going green
CABILDO president Carlos Alonso this week inspected the redevelopment in the centre of Las Americas, which has been completed in budget and ahead of schedule! The main “green area” adjacent to the football stadiums in the centre of Las Americas, have been spruced up and look a picture. The project was a joint venture between the Cabildo and the Arona Town Hall. Alonso was joined by Mayor Francisco Niuo along with the general co-ordinator of Tourism and Strategic Projects, Miguel Becerra, and Councillors Antonio Luis Sosa, Miguel Angel Mendel and Roman Garcia. President Carlos Alonso, who said the total cost was just
over 31,000 euros, added: “It’s nice to see the work completed, and this investment and remodelling makes the area far more attractive. And this can only be good for tourism.” Alonso said the Cabildo will continue to invest in this type of action “which we consider fundamental to improve the image tourists perceive of our destinations. It is money well spent.” Besides cleaning the whole environment, the project has improved the streets, pavements and added more greenery. More vegetation has been planted and there have been a plethora of trees planted to give the area more shade. Irrigation work was done and improvements to the network have
been implemented. A couple of the roads have been improved, and some speed-reducing bumps have also been laid down. And this is just the start of more Arona improvements. Mayor Niño said: “In the first quarter of this year, we expect to start more work for the municipality, namely the remodelling of some important roads in Las Americas. “This is currently in the bidding phase and we have a budget of 5.1m euros. This represents a substantial investment in the so-called ‘golden mile’, linking Arona and Adeje. “It will result in better service and greater comfort for the thousands of visitors, residents and businesses in the area.”
Spain debates lifting age of consent to 15
IN an attempt to limit child abuse, the Spanish government is considering raise the age of sexual consent from 13 to 15. And adults embarking on sexual relationships with those under 15 could be arrested for the crime of child abuse under the new proposal. Sources close to the ruling Popular Party were quoted in Spain’s Huffington Post as saying that the introduction of the proposed measure depended on the approval of the Health and Justice ministries. The issue was scheduled to be debated in the Spanish parliament this week. Nor surprisingly, the debate about the age of consent and age of marriage has been raging for some time because Spain remains one of Europe’s most permis-
sive countries regarding these issues. The country’s age of consent, 13, is the lowest in Europe after the Vatican’s 12. But the 2012 murder of a 13-year-old girl by her 39-year-old lover in the village of El Salobral, in south-east Spain, sparked a debate over the age of consent. The victim’s parents had already alerted police of the couple’s agegap, but officers were unable to intervene because their relationship was not illegal at that stage. While Spain has one of the lowest age-ofconsent laws, it is hardly the only European country to wrestle with what should be the legal minimum age for consensual sex. In Sweden, where the age of consent is 15, uncertainties over how to interpret the law have led to young Swedish
teenagers appearing in court after engaging in consensual sex. In 2011, a 15-yearold boy was convicted of having sex with his 13-year-old girlfriend, even though there was just an 18-month age difference between the two. In a disturbing case from Italy, a 60-year-old paedophile was let off for having sex with an 11-year-old girl because the court had failed to take into account the girl’s “amorous feelings” towards the man. In Norway, meanwhile, a Catholic priest in court for having sex with a 15-year-old girl claimed he did not know she was under age: the legal age of consent in his native Germany is 14. And in 2013, the Spanish Government raised the country’s marriage age from 14 to 16.

Boyhood grabs the Golden Globe glory THE coming-ofage film Boyhood has taken the top honours at the Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills.
The film, which took 12 years to make, won best film drama, with Richard Linklater named best director and Patricia Arquette best supporting actress. British actor Eddie Redmayne won best actor in a drama for his role as physicist Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. British actresses Joanne Froggatt and Ruth Wilson also collected prizes, the latter named best actress in US TV drama The Affair. The awards, covering both film and TV, saw Froggatt win best supporting actress in a TV series for her role as the maid Anna Bates in Downton Abbey. Linklater said: “I want to dedicate this to parents who are evolving everywhere, and fami-
lies that are just passing through this world and doing their best. Bottom line is, we’re all flawed in
this world. No one’s perfect.” Meanwhile, Redmayne beat competition from

Spanish cops trap an Irish sex fiend ONE of Ireland’s most dangerous sex offenders has been arrested in Spain after fleeing his native country 18 months ago. The North Dublin man, said to be a serial rapist, was detained on a European Arrest Warrant and faces being extradited over serious, separate offences. The criminal, from north Dublin, was picked up by police in the Alicante region last week and spent the weekend in jail after taking advantage of the kindness shown by a judge, who allowed him to travel abroad for a holiday. He failed to return from that trip, and gardai (Irish police) issued an international arrest
warrant, which was acted on by Spanish authorities. The suspect had been driving around north inner city Dublin in a modified van which contained a “rape kit”. At least four prostitutes told the gardai they were raped and robbed by the man between 2010 and 2012, but they refused to make official complaints. The convicted sex offender had previously been questioned about the double rape of two foreign prostitutes in a north Dublin hotel in August 2012. Ten days before, allegedly, raping them, the man was stopped while driving in a van with duct tape and ca-
ble ties. He had previously been halted while carrying a knife and knuckleduster, and has been involved in a terrifying but bizarre campaign against gardai. The sex workers he picked up in his van in the Ballsbridge area of Dublin were taken to a hotel. They alleged that they were given a substance and then sexually assaulted savagely. The women went to the local police station the following morning, where they made a formal complaint. They were then taken to hospital for treatment. Some time later, the man voluntarily attended the station, where he was interviewed by gardai. He admitted having sex with
both women, but denied rape. After being released from custody on a separate case in early 2013, gardai were so concerned that they issued a special nationwide alert about him to all stations. His brutal activities against prostitutes led Dublin gardai to set up a special undercover operation. It was run from the Bridewell station in which female gardai posed as prostitutes in an attempt to snare him. But he fled the country, just weeks after the operation was set up. Redmayne revealed that he had cut short his honeymoon to attend the ceremony, saying: “I promised her sunshine it wasn’t so great today - but thanks for giving us a honeymoon we’ll remember.” He was the only Briton to win an award in the film categories, despite a strong showing in the nominations. His co-star, Felicity Jones, missed out on the best drama actress award to Julianne Moore, who played an academic with early onset Alzheimer’s in Still Alice. Rosamund Pike and Keira Knightley were also nominated for their parts in Gone Girl and The Imitation Game respectively, but were both disappointed. Clooney, awarded the Cecil B DeMille lifetime achievement award, ended his acceptance speech by referring to the marches which took place around the world on Sunday, saying: “They didn’t march in protest they marched in support of ‘We will not walk in fear.’” Maggie Gyllenhaal won best actress in a TV film or mini-series for her role in BBC Two drama The Honourable Woman. Kevin Spacey picked up his first Golden Globe after eight nominations for his role in Netflix drama House of Cards. Border patrols will halt the flow of IS militants MADRID is anxious to see changes made to the treaty governing the visa-free Schengen area, says Spain’s Interior Minister.
This, he believes, would enable Spain to introduce border controls to stem the tide of Islamic militants returning from the Middle East. Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz told daily newspaper El Pais: “The existing mobility in the European Union is facilitating the movements (of jihadists) to any country and also to our country. “We are going to back border controls and it is possible that, as a consequence, it will be necessary to modify the Schengen treaty,” The minister and his European counterparts
are set to discuss the future of Schengen during a Paris meeting on Sunday. Diaz is not the first European politician to consider revamping or suspending the Schengen zone altogether, in response to the deadly attacks in and around Paris this week, which left 20 dead, including three attackers.
Last Friday, Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s right-wing Front National (FN), told President Francois Hollande that the country should “immediately suspend Schengen to be able to control our borders”. She feels it is an “essential element in the fight against terrorism”. The Schengen Area comprises 26 European countries which have
abolished passport and any other type of border controls. The agreement allows for freedom of movement for both European citizens, Schengen visaholders and those who can travel in the area visa-free. Freedom of movement is considered “a fundamental right”, guaranteed by the EU to its citizens. Diaz further called for the establishment of a Europe-wide passengername record data base, which would aid in sharing passenger information between member states. “We are convinced of the need for such a tool, to follow those who travel to terrorist operating theatres, or who return from there,” he said. He also said the hate speech, particularly anti-Semitic messages and attempts to recruit young people to militant
organisations, needed to be tackled online in a way that did not stop the internet from being a vehicle of free expression. “We need to work more closely with Internet companies to guarantee the reporting and, if possible, removal of all content that amounts to an apology for terrorism, or calls for violence and hatred,” said Diaz Fears of another terror attack in Europe are high following the shootings in France. On Sunday, a report in the Germany daily Bild, citing intelligence from the US National Security Agency, warned that the events in France may be the first in a wave of attacks to strike Europe. The intelligence, reportedly citing conversations between Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ ISIL) leaders, said a series of European cities could be attacked, including Rome. How-
ever, the article, did not furnish details of a concrete terror plot. Security ministers from the EU and US also met at France’s Interior Ministry on Sunday to discuss a joint response to terrorism in the wake of the Paris assault. The meeting was held just hours before a mammoth parade through Paris, where hundreds of thousands of people, along with dozens of world leaders, came in a show of solidarity and remembrance for those who lost their lives. Following the meeting, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said European interior ministers had agreed to crank up co-operation in an bid to halt future terrorist attacks. The White House has also attracted its allies to Washington for an 18th February security summit to try to stem the tide of violent extremism

Hope for hepatitis C victims NEW measures to fight hepatitis C were pledged by the Spanish Government on Monday following complaints by sufferers.
They say the authorities are denying them the latest drugs to treat the deadly liver disease. A new committee will draw up a proposal within three weeks of examining the extent of the illness and clinical criteria. The Health Ministry says it intends to “include newly-authorised drugs” in treatment plans. But it did not specify whether it would widen access to the latest generation of hepatitis drugs to more patients, in line with demands from campaigners in Spain and other countries. The new committee of experts, patients and health officials was set up after weeks of protests by hepatitis C sufferers, who said public-
spending cuts were denying thousands of patients access to the drugs. Campaigners say the new generation of drugs is twice as effective as older medication in treating the illness, but also more expensive - costing tens of thousands of euros a patient. The Health Ministry did not say how many patients might get access to recent drugs under the new plan. Earlier, it had estimated the number at up to 6,000, but insisted on Monday that was not a maximum limit. Authorities say 50,000 people in Spain have been diagnosed with the disease, but they estimate that 700,000 people may be carrying the illness without having been diagnosed. “When we know the extent of the problem, we will know how to fund the treatment,” said Ruben Moreno, the ministry’s Senior Health Official. “But it will be a clinical decision and not an economic or political one.” Right now there is no
vaccine for hepatitis C, which is caused by a virus that can be caught from contaminated blood, and can lead to chronic liver disease. The Platform for Hep-
atitis C Sufferers group says 12 people die each day from the disease in Spain. Dozens of people infected with the virus have been occupying the October 12 Hospital
in southern Madrid for more than three weeks, demanding the Government authorise doctors to prescribe the new drugs more widely. The protesters blame
the lack of treatment on tough, public-spending cuts in health and other sectors by Spain’s conservative government in the recent economic crisis.
Chilly December THE month of December was the coldest in the Canary Islands since 2008 and the second coolest this Millennium.
The average temperature in the archipelago was 15.5 degrees Celsius or 61 degrees Fahrenheit. This is around 2C below the average temperature as recorded by the Advancement Climatology of the State Agency Meteorology (Aemet) . This is unusual because there have been a high number of calima days. The unseasonal weather event has helped push the average temperature up,
and it’s understood the figure would have been as much as 5C cooler but for the strange weather just before Christmas. In some Tenerife mountain areas, there has been 11 consecutive days of frost, which is rare. Although rainfall has been scarce, with only areas of northern Gran Canaria hitting average monthly totals,
there has been a regular amount of snow on the peaks. The precipitation average for December was 24 litres per square metre - five times lower than last year, but double the rainfall of 2012 and triple that of 2011. On average, there have been seven days of rain, one day under than the average.
And it’s been windier as well. Average wind speeds have been 10% higher than normal. All this data points towards a cooler winter in the Canary Islands with more sunshine. It will, of course, feel warmer away from the wind, and it could be relatively dry. Which is not great news because 2014 was one of the driest years in decades.

Cameron’s White House date BRITISH Prime Minister David Cameron is spending two days at the White House this week with US President Barack Obama.
The two leaders had a working dinner at the White House yesterday (Thursday) and are meeting in the Oval Office today. Among other topics, they are expected to discuss is a collaboration against internetbased cyber-attacks. Downing Street, which said the two leaders will discuss global issues, added: “The Prime Minister was looking forward to the visit, which will be an opportunity to discuss the global economic outlook, how we boost growth and increase free trade, and a number of national security issues such as Isil [Islamic State], counter-terrorism and Russia’s actions in Ukraine.” White House press secretary Josh Ear-
nest said in a statement earlier this week: “Mr Cameron’s visit highlights the breadth, depth and strength of our relationship with the United Kingdom, as well as the strong bonds of friendship between the American and British people. “The United Kingdom is a uniquely-close friend and steadfast ally, and the President looks forward to beginning the new year by working with Prime Minister Cameron on these issues. “And also reaffirming the enduring special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.” Mr Cameron is expected to propose greater collaboration between the UK and US against cyber-attacks. This week’s report by GCHQ, the government’s communications security agency, is called ‘Common Cyber Attacks: Reducing the Impact’. It warns that computer networks belonging to UK companies are coming under daily attacks by hackers, crim-
inal gangs, commercial rivals and foreign intelligence services.
It estimates that incidents typically cost £600,000 to £1.5m to re-
solve. The report also suggests that more than 80% of large UK
companies experienced some form of security breach in 2014. Robert Hannigan, the intelligence service’s director, wrote in a foreword: “In GCHQ, we continue to see real threats to the UK on a daily basis, and I’m afraid the scale and rate of these attacks shows little sign of abating.” The two leaders last met during the G20 summit in November. The summit focused on promoting economic growth, but world leaders also discussed West Africa’s Ebola crisis, climate change and the conflict in Ukraine. Cameron and Obamam, who took part in Sunday’s international protest in France - which attracted up to four million people throughout the country - are united in their condemnation of the attacks on Paris, which have left 17 people dead. Obama offered assistance to “bring these terrorists to justice”, while Cameron said the UK stood with the French people in the fight against terror.

Hate preacher to die in prison ABU Hamza alMasri, the radical Muslim cleric who staved off extradition from Britain for eight years, has been given a life sentence in New York for supporting terrorism.
He was convicted in May of multiple charges, including hostagetaking and plotting to set up a terrorism training camp in the US. During sentencing, his lawyers asked the judge to take into account his missing hands and an eye. They also argued that a plan to imprison Abu Hamza in Colorado’s Supermax federal prison would violate assurances the US made to judges in London to secure his 2012 extradition. Prosecutors argued that the US government had never made such a promise to the UK, and that life in prison was the only appropriate sentence. Judge Katherine Forrest called Abu Hamza’s actions “barbaric” and “misguided” and said he was getting life because she could not imagine a time when it would be safe to release him. She also said she would leave the decision where he would spend his imprisonment to federal prison officials. So, finally, after years of legal wrangling in Britain, it all ended for the firebrand preacher in a wood-panelled New York courtroom close to the site where the Twin Towers once stood. And this time, there was none of the trademark ranting from a cleric who had preached hatred and violence for years. Abu Hamza, wearing prison overalls, spoke quietly when he was invited to address the crowded court and asked for leniency. He
said he was innocent and complained about his treatment in prison. The judge read out the names of the four British tourists killed in the Yemen kidnapping in 1998, and described Abu Hamza’s actions as barbaric. The former nightclubb o u n c e r- t u r n e d - e xtremist cleric was then sentenced to spend the remainder of his life behind bars. The US justice department hailed the sentence. John Carlin, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, said in a statement: “but Hamza is an unrepentant, all-purpose terrorist. He is being held accountable for the many ways in which he supported terrorism and other terrorists through much of his life. The cleric, born Mustafa Kamel Mustafa, was convicted last May in New York on 11 counts, including involvement in a plot to take Western tourists hostages in Yemen in 1998. Prosecutors say Abu Hamza supplied the ringleader with a satellite phone. Three Britons and an Australian died when the Yemeni army launched a rescue bid. Hampshire couple Laurence and Margaret Whitehouse and his wife Margaret were kidnapped - he escaped,
but his wife was killed. Mr Whitehouse said: “There has been a gross injustice in the length of time taken in bringing these matters to a conclusion.” “My understanding is that British police possessed all the evidence that resulted in the decision announced in the US. Another family member of a victim was also frustrated that the legal proceedings had taken so long. Donald Main, whose niece, Ruth Williamson, was killed, said: “I have never understood why this judgement could not have been made many years ago by a UK court, thus avoiding the long, very costly legal battles seeking to avoid extradition to the US.” The Crown Prosecution Service said in a statement that it had considered evidence related to the Yemen plot on “two separate occasions”. But it added that there was “simply insufficient evidence to allow a prosecution of those offences at the time”. Abu Hamza was also convicted of helping to set up a terrorist training camp in the US state of Oregon. The trial followed his extradition to the US in 2012 at the end of an eight-year legal battle. During the trial, Abu
Hamza was described as a “terrorist facilitator with a global reach”. He had used his powerbase at the Finsbury Park Mosque in north London to encourage his followers to train
and fight in the cause of jihad. London’s Metropolitan Police initially raided the mosque in 2003 but Abu Hamza escaped arrest, continuing to preach in the street
outside. Commander Richard Walton, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said there would be “great relief in the country that Abu Hamza has been convicted of such serious terrorist offences”. The Met said it had provided the FBI with “a high volume of exhibits and case papers, and facilitated several interviews with witnesses and victims in the UK” during the investigation. British Home Secretary Teresa May said: “I am pleased that Abu Hamza has finally faced justice. “His sentence reflects the severity of his crimes, and I am pleased he will spend the rest of his life behind bars, where he belongs.”

Archbishop’s cry for help THE threat from militant Islamist group Boko Hara is being ignored by the West, according to the Catholic Archbishop of Jos, in central Nigeria.
Ignatius Kaigama believes the world must show more determination to halt the group’s advance in Nigeria. He said the international community must demonstrate the same spirit and resolve shown after the attacks in France. His warning came after 23 people were killed by three female suicide bombers. The weekend attacks followed reports that hundreds of people were killed last week during the capture by Boko Haram of the town of Baga in Borno state. Archbishop Kaigama
KOLINDA Grabar-Kitarovic has been crowned Croatia’s first female president by a whisker!
The opposition challenger secured 50.5% of the vote, with 99% of ballots counted, while incumbent Ivo Josipovic was just 1% behind. But at that point, Mr Josipovic conceded gracefully and congratulated his victor. Her success signifies that Croatia may be shifting to the right after the centre-left coalition’s failure to end six years of downturn. The election was seen as a key test for the main parties, ahead of parliamentary elections expected to be held towards the end of 2015. The gap between the two candidates remained at about 1% throughout much of the second round of voting. Turn-out was 58.9% around 12% more than in the first round held two weeks ago, which was equally close.
told the BBC that the slaughter in Baga demonstrated that the Nigerian military was unable to tackle Boko Hiram. “It is a monumental tragedy,” said the Archbishop. “It has saddened all of Nigeria, but we seem to be helpless. Because if we could stop Boko Haram, we would have done it right away. But they continue
to attack, and kill and capture territories with such impunity,.” Ban Ki-Moon, the UN Secretary-General, said he was appalled by reports of the killings in Baga, and he condemned what he called “the depraved acts of Boko Haram terrorists”. The Nigerian military is trying to retake the town, but has issued few
details of the operation. On Saturday, it had successfully fought off Boko Haram fighters trying to capture Damaturu, another major north-eastern town. Will Ross, a BBC correspondent in Lagos, said it was a rare success for the army, which, generally, has failed to protect civilians from the relentless violence. He added that Nigeria’s politicians appeared more focused on next month’s elections, and President Goodluck Jonathan had not even commented on the recent violence. On Sunday, two female suicide attackers killed four people and injured more than 40 people in the town of Potiskum. A day earlier, another young female suicide bomber, reported to be just 10, struck in Maiduguri, the main city of north-east Nigeria, killing at least 19 people.
Archbishop Kaigama said facing down Boko Haram required international support and unity of the type shown after last week’s militant attacks in France. “We need that spirit to be spread around,” he said. “Not just when an attack happens in Europe, but when it happens in Nigeria, in Niger, in Cameroon. “We must mobilise our international resources and face or confront the people who bring such sadness to many families.” In June, Britain said it would increase its military and educational aid to help Nigeria tackle Boko Haram. The aid includes counter-insurgency training for troops, which is also being provided by the US military. But Nigeria has criticised the US for refusing to sell it weapons because of alleged human rights abuses commit-
ted by Nigerian troops. Jos, where the Archbishop is based, has a mixed population of Muslims and Christians and has faced attacks by Islamist militants, although it is some distance from Boko Haram’s strongholds. Last month, though, more than 30 people were killed in twin bomb attacks on a market there. Churches have also been targeted in what are believed to be attempts by the militants to stir religious tension. A French-led initiative has called for Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad to contribute 700 troops each to a multi-national force against Boko Haram. But no country has yet implemented the plan. Niger has blamed Nigeria, saying it has not kept to commitments regarding its own troop levels.
Croatia’s first female leader
Mr Josipovic enjoyed widespread popularity for much of his tenure, but the economic crisis damaged his standing. Grabar-Kitarovic is a politically-conservative member of the The 46-year-old is a former foreign minister and assistant to the Nato secretary general. She told jubilant supporters in the capital Zagreb: “I will not let anyone tell me that Croatia will not be prosperous and wealthy,” and appealed for national unity to tackle the economic crisis. Josipovic, a 57-year-old law expert and classical composer, had been president since 2010. Josipovic had been so popular for so long that it seemed impossible for him not to be re-elected. But he was backed by
the governing, centreleft coalition, which has failed to pull Croatia out of a six-year-long recession. Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic apologised for being a “burden” to the outgoing president. And his government may also pay the price in elections later this year. Croatia, which became the newest member of the European Union in July 2013, has an unemployment rate close to 20%. The Croatian president has a say in foreign policy and is head of the army, but running the country is primarily left to the government. Josipovic proposed constitutional changes in a bid to solve the economic crisis - including increased powers for the president.

What is the ‘Apostille’?
By Mariano Zunino Siri
IN many cases in which public documents granted abroad need to be valid in Spain, there is a stamp called “Apostille of The Hague Convention” or simply “Apostille”.
It certifies that such a document granted abroad is valid within the countries which have signed the Convention of The Hague of 1961. For instance, a document granted in the UK (a Death Certificate, perhaps) is valid within the UK territory. But if you want this document to be valid abroad (in this case, Spain) it must be legalised with the Apostille. In the UK the document is usually notarised and apostilled
through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Apostille is a simplified method of legalising public documents to verify their international authenticity. Physically, it consists of a sheet of paper attached to the reverse of the document. It is an alternative method of legalisation and valid within all State members of the Convention (also known as Conference of International Private Law of The Hague of 5th October 1961). In some countries it can be obtained electronically. There are more than 100 State members of The Hague Organisation, and many others who are not members of the Organisation but are part of the Convention. Public documents are those issued by an authority of the jurisdiction of the State (including Public Prosecutor, clerks, or judicial agent documents). They also include administrative documents, notary documents and official certif-
icates joined to private documents (to certify a date or a signature). The Convention is not applicable to documents issued by diplomatic or consular agents, or commercial or custom operations. Usually, the Apostille is required in an inheritance of a foreigner who
dies, leaving property in Spain. To transfer the property to his/her inheritors, many documents granted abroad are needed in Spain. These documents must be legalised with the Apostille and officially translated into Spanish (although within the EU, some public
documents are printed in all European official languages and do not need translation). This procedure is completely different from a proceeding of “Exequatur”, or recognition and enforcement of foreign judgements issued abroad. Within the European
Union, following the original idea of Brussels Convention and Lugano Convention, there is a Regalement of European Parliament and Council applicable to civil and commercial law matters. In future columns, I may discuss this very important issue.

Don't Miss... Wednesday 21st January, ITV1, 19.30 Presented by Dermot O’Leary, the National Television Awards will host the biggest stars of Britain’s bestloved shows at The O2 London on Wednesday 21st January 2015, live on ITV. This year, more votes than ever before have been cast and the shortlist reveals which shows and stars the public want to see collecting a prize on the night. In the Drama Performance category, it’s detective versus Dowager as Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch and Downton Abbey’s Maggie Smith vie for top place. But can they take Sarah Lancashire, whose tough and tender performance in Happy Valley stunned audiences, or the enormously popular Sheridan Smith, for her acclaimed turn in Cilla? In Serial Drama Performance, the first couple of the Queen Vic go head-to-head – Danny Dyer and Kellie Bright have had an amazing year in Albert Square, but don’t rule out the competition: Donna’s emotional return to Emmerdale was superbly played by Verity Rushworth, while in Hollyoaks Nikki Sanderson’s domestic-abuse storyline gripped the fans. Who is Britain’s favourite TV Judge? We need a judge as wise, witty and bold as all of our nominees put together to make that call: star makers Simon Cowell, David Walliams and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini are up against star baker Mary Berry. There’s nothing soggy bottomed about that line-up… In Drama, international hits Downton Abbey, Sherlock and Doctor Who will be slugging it out for the prize – or could the plucky young newcomer Cilla take them unawares? A brand new award sees some of the nation’s favourite shows come head to head: The Great British Bake Off, The Apprentice, Masterchef and Come Dine With Me are all up for the Skills Challenge award. Has Lord Sugar sweet-talked his way into the nation’s hearts? Or will Mel and Sue’s saucy double entendres have us standing to attention? In the Factual category, Gogglebox and Long Lost Family might look like underdogs facing four-time winner Top Gear, but like Paul O’Grady: For The Love of Dogs they will be gunning for ‘best in show’. Ant & Dec rarely leave The O2 empty-handed but it’s never over till it’s over, and in the Entertainment Programme category, their Saturday Night Takeaway has some serious competition in the shape of Through the Keyhole, Celebrity Big Brother and I’m a Celebrity… (which is actually one of their shows too). And as for the Entertainment Presenter award, just because Ant and Dec have won it thirteen times in a row, it doesn’t mean this won’t be the year that Bradley Walsh, Keith Lemon or NTA host Dermot O’Leary snatches it from their grasp at last. Fittingly for the Talent Show category, rivalry is fierce. Has The X Factor got the X factor? Will Strictly Come Dancing waltz away with the prize? Is it time for the The Voice UK to be heard, or has Britain’s Got Talent got the skills to win? In the Comedy category, Mrs Brown’s Boys has one of d’biggest audiences in d’country – but it’s taking on the rowdy ex-pat sun-worshippers of Benidorm, the close-knit family of Outnumbered fans and the army of brainiacs who muse on The Big Bang Theory. The explosion of choices and channels in the TV landscape is reflected in another new category, Multichannel – where the dragon-warriors of Game of Thrones will fight the walking dead of… The Walking Dead, and Keith Lemon’s Celebrity Juice will do innuendo battle with the party posse of Geordie Shore.

Match of the Day BBC1, 22:25 Gary Lineker introduces the best of the action and reaction from the day’s seven Premier League matches, including the visit of title hopefuls Chelsea to Swansea, who are looking for their first ever top-flight victory over the Blues. Manchester United travel to QPR, where they are aiming for a sixth consecutive victory over the Hoops. In the evening kick-off, Newcastle host Southampton at St James’ Park and are hoping to avenge the 4-0 defeat they suffered in the reverse fixture earlier this season. Sunderland are away to Tottenham, who thrashed them 5-1 when they met at White Hart Lane last season. The day’s other fixtures see Aston Villa looking to complete the double over Liverpool at Villa Park, Burnley hosting Crystal Palace, and Leicester facing a home match against Stoke.
Masters Snooker BBC1, 13:00 Hazel Irvine introduces live coverage from the first semi final at the 2015 Masters, where the winner stands to earn at least £90,000 in prize money. The match is the best-of-11 frames.
Greg Davies: The Back of My Mum’s Head Channel 4 , 23:15 Greg Davies’ acclaimed live show airs for the first time. The tour received rave reviews and was extended to 94 dates, including multiple sell-out nights at London’s Hammersmith Apollo and The South Bank Centre. Stung by his mother’s suggestion that he is ‘not normal’, Greg puts everyone else under the microscope in a petty quest to discover if anyone actually is. The analysis is far from scientific, and the conclusions are spurious at best, but it’s very funny.
The singing contest returns for a fourth series, hosted by Emma Willis and Marvin Humes. In the second episode of the season the coaches assess the vocal talents of another ten hopefuls to see if they have what it takes to join their team. Superstar coaches will.i.am, Sir Tom Jones, Rita Ora and Ricky Wilson hear from Yorkshire lass Jade Hewitt who works in a crisp factory by day but channels her inner Beyoncé by night, as well as Classical Reflection - identical 19-year-old mirror twins from Peterborough who finish each other sentences, study the same subjects and who even passed their driving tests on the same day. Plus Billy Bottle and Martine, a happily married hippy couple from Devon who create an unlikely bond with will.i.am.

Walking Through History More 4, 19:55
Tony Robinson visits the southwest corner of Wales and one of the finest coastal paths in the country. But he’s not going just to appreciate the beauty of the bays, beaches and wildlife. He’s out to discover why Pembrokeshire feels so English, even though it’s over 100 miles from the border. The clue’s in the county’s other claim to fame: there are castles everywhere and it boasts one of the country’s finest cathedrals, sure signs that the Normans stamped their mark all over this little slice of Wales. Tony’s four-day walk traces the story of the Norman conquest of Pembrokeshire, which he discovers was very different from the knockout victory of Hastings. There was a long, fiercely fought struggle before the Normans turned this Welsh- speaking kingdom into ‘Little England beyond Wales’.

The Tea Trail with Simon Reeve BBC2, 18:00
15:30.................... Ford Super Sunday 19:00.............. Sky Sports Originals
Adventurer and journalist Simon Reeve heads to east Africa to uncover the stories behind Britain’s favourite drink. Britons consume millions of cups of tea each day, but how many know where the tea comes from? Perhaps surprisingly, most of the leaves in everyday teabags do not come from India or China but are bought at an auction in the coastal city of Mombasa in Kenya. From here, Simon follows the tea trail through the epic landscapes of Kenya and Uganda and meets some of the millions of people who pick, pack and transport tea. Drinking tea with everyone from Masai cattle herders to the descendants of the original white tea planters, Simon learns that the industry is not immune to the troubles of the continent - poverty, low wages and child labour.

Exposure: Britain’s Secret Slaves
16th January -22nd January 2015
M onday
ITV1, 22.40
“It was like a hell. She treat me as a slave. Not like a human being, I was treated like an animal. It was hard. But I stayed for my son.” - Elizabeth, domestic worker Exposure delves into the world of modern slavery - and finds it alive and well in some of London’s most exclusive streets. Featuring testimony from women who are forced to work up to 18 hours a day, seven days a week for as little as 50 pence an hour, this programme provides a close insight into the conditions of domestic workers brought into the country by their wealthy foreign employers. Reporter Julie Etchingham finds that many of the women report physical and psychological abuse, despite the fact they are meant to be protected by British law while working here. Because of recent changes in visa laws, the women have no legal status if they leave the families who employ them. The programme discovers how those who escape from abusive employers are exploited by criminals who draw them into a murky underworld of fake passports, false visas, and illegal employment. One case study the team found during its 12-month investigation, ‘Ira’, says she was brought to the UK under the new system, to care for her employers’ child at a London hospital. Back in Saudi Arabia she worked up to 20 hours a day and had to ask permission to brush her teeth and go to the toilet. In the UK she explains this got worse. She says: “They treat me as like a prisoner. They never ever give me even a single pound to buy my own food, even my personal things. Especially one time I have monthly period here I [had to] use only the nappy of a boy.” The UK has legal obligations to protect domestic workers from abuse. The Government says it does this by ensuring women are given information by British officials about their rights in the UK. Another woman, ‘Davina’, says she was given no information and once in the UK lived in fear of her employer. She says: “He says, ‘I can kill you.’ I was scared maybe he will do something, he will really kill me. I cannot sleep thinking about maybe one day I will die here.” The programme discovers it is not just women working for private households who are suffering abuse. ‘Sarah’ says she was locked inside her employer’s apartment, forced to work 18 hours a day for a diplomat who withheld her wages. She says: “I’m scared because he’s a diplomat, that’s what I’m scared of. He can do whatever he want to do, as he has immunity under the law. It’s really a slavery, the thing that my employer did to me.” In April 2012, in an effort to cut immigration numbers, the Government changed the visa system so women were tied to the employers who brought them in. If they run away, they now find themselves at risk of deportation - and critics have compared this process to the ‘kafala’ system used by many Middle Eastern and Gulf countries, which essentially makes domestic workers the property of their employers. Kate Roberts, a Community Advocate at Kalayaan, a charity that supports overseas domestic workers, says: “To put vulnerable women in a position where they are enslaved in the UK is completely disproportionate to the Government’s aims of controlling immigration. It’s completely contradictory to have removed a visa system which was shown to work well and replace it with one that, that has been condemned by human rights groups as a model tying these workers to their employers.” One woman, too terrified to go on camera, recorded a secret diary for the programme. It reveals that she was brought here two years ago by a wealthy family from the United Arab Emirates who stopped paying her, and she fled with only the clothes she was wearing. She discovered she had no legal right to change employers and had to go on to the black market to find a job illegally. She writes: “I am tired but I want job. I want money for my family. Only me work. I have three brother. Have three sisters. Small sister married and husband not work. She is always sick also. Another big sister. Her husband die. I am so tired but I can’t do anything. Because everybody ask for papers.” The Home Secretary, Theresa May, has said that abolishing modern slavery in Britain is a personal priority. Marissa Begonia, who helps runaways as chair of the Justice 4 Domestic Workers group, says the system needs to change urgently. She says: “What kind of system do we have that the victims are the ones being criminalised? And licensing the perpetrators to abuse more, to exploit more workers. Where is the justice there?”

The Eichmann Show BBC1, 21.00 Martin Freeman (Sherlock, The Hobbit, Fargo) and Anthony LaPaglia (Without a Trace, Lantana) star in BBC Two’s 90 minute film about the televising of the trial of Adolf Eichmann - one of the key architects of
the Holocaust. Described as the ‘trial of the century’, it was shown on TV in 37 countries and was the first time the horror of the death camps had been heard live directly from its victims. The trial became the world’s first ever global TV event, and this film tells the extraordinary story of the production team that overcame enormous obstacles to capture the testimony of one of the war’s most notorious Nazis. Set in Jerusalem, 1961, ground-breaking TV producer Milton Fruchtman (Martin Freeman) hires director Leo Hurwitz (Anthony LaPaglia) to film the trial. A critically-acclaimed filmmaker who had pioneered multi-camera studio broadcasting, Hurwitz had been blacklisted under McCarthy for more than a decade. Arriving in Jerusalem, Hurwitz has a momentous job on his hands: together he and Milton must quickly train up an inexperienced camera team and persuade the judges to change their minds and let them film the trial. Working under intense pressure, the team finally wins permission to film by rebuilding the courtroom with specially concealed cameras. Over the next four months, the trial highlights - hastily cut together at the end of each day and couriered around the world - would have a profound and sensational effect. Day after day, Holocaust survivors shared their shocking testimony with a global audience, and day after day Adolf Eichmann stunned the world with his apparent lack of contrition. Eighty percent of the German population watch at least one hour a week. It went out on all three US networks with daily news bulletins in the UK. People fainted when they saw it on TV, and it was the first time many start openly sharing their experiences of the Holocaust. The extraordinary story of how the trial came to be televised and the team that made it happen has never been told. Also starring Rebecca Front (The Thick Of It,) Andy Nyman (Peaky Blinders, Death At A Funeral) and Nicholas Woodeson (The Honourable Woman, Skyfall), the film features extensive archive footage from the 1961 trial, bringing the realities of this pivotal event to a new generation.

24 Hours in Police Custody Channel 4, 21:00
The landmark police documentary series that covers every angle of police work continues with an investigation into suspected human trafficking. Police in Luton have arrested a man and a woman from Hungary on suspicion of human trafficking. The case will be investigated by DC Tom Stean in the Serious Crime Unit, who discovers that both his suspects are already wanted under European Arrest Warrants for other alleged offences. It is no surprise to him: ‘Human trafficking is getting worse and worse. I think Luton is a magnet.’ Meanwhile, two alleged victims come forward to testify against the suspects in custody. As the detectives struggle to untangle lurid claim and counterclaim, a police forensic search team gains entry to the suspects’ home. Inside they find a secret loft space where there are signs of human habitation.
Weighing Up the Enemy Channel 4, 20:00
Dr Christian Jessen continues to tackle the number one reason for diet failure head on - dwindling motivation. Minibus driver and single mum Deb meets Wendy, a registered carer for her husband, who is disabled, and has been drawing benefits for the past seven years. Deb has a firm work ethic and believes everyone should work to set an example for their children; Wendy feels entitled to her benefits. Both are staking their own money on losing more weight than the other. Dr Christian also takes a look at the true cost of the nation’s growing weight problem and whether paying premium prices for diet products are worth the outlay.
Angry, White and Proud Channel 4, 22:55 With the weakening of the English Defence League, splinter far-right groups are on the rise. This powerful, candid and disturbing documentary explores the growing number of far-right splinter groups that have emerged. In his first full-length documentary, director Jamie Roberts spends a year getting to know members of the far right: men who call themselves ‘patriots’ but some of whom admit to being racist and hating Muslims. With unprecedented access, Jamie captures all aspects of their lives, from violent street protests and dramatic police arrests to the incongruous reality of their domestic lives.

Historical drama chronicling Thomas Cromwell’s rise to power in the court of Henry VIII. Thomas Cromwell’s patron, Cardinal Wolsey, is dismissed as lord chancellor and forced to flee his palace at York Place. The old noble families of England, jealous of their own right to advise the King, have long waited for this moment. His hopes of returning to the King’s favour lie with the ever-loyal Thomas Cromwell. Still lacking a male heir, the King is desperate for an annulment from his marriage to Katherine of Aragon but the cardinal’s efforts to persuade the Pope to grant the annulment are fruitless. As Henry grows impatient, the pressure increases on the cardinal. To add to this, rumours reach the cardinal that the King’s new mistress is Anne Boleyn, who has sworn vengeance on him over Harry Percy. Cromwell visits Anne, but she is unmoved.

Lurid headlines about youngsters drinking to excess have led to a perception that young British people have a problem with alcohol. Jeremy speaks to police and ambulance services who clear up afterwards, visits party mecca Magaluf, and back in the UK uses undercover reporters to find out how straightforward it is to get served underage. Each week, Jeremy and the production team tackle each issue head on - attending police raids, accompanying paramedics at the scene of emergencies, hearing from experts, gathering incriminating evidence through a variety of methods including undercover filming, and confronting wrong-doers. He also meets people whose lives have been deeply affected by each issue, to hear their stories first hand.

In this disarmingly frank interview, Holocaust survivor Freddie Knoller - now in his 90s - tells his personal story of being a young Jewish man during World War II. Speaking directly to camera and accompanied by extensive archive footage, he relives his past and draws on intense memories to navigate the extraordinary adventure of his early life Freddie’s story is a dramatic and often surprisingly funny real-life account. It takes us from his family life in 1930’s Vienna, through the German occupation of Austria and his flight to Belgium. Then on to Nazi occupied Paris, where Freddie lived and worked in the red-light Pigalle district for well over two years, entertaining German officers and socialising with dancing girls, before an interrogation by the Gestapo meant he had to move on again. After a brief spell in the Resistance, the Nazis eventually caught up with him and his life in Auschwitz began.

Birdman on wing and a prayer for an Oscar NOMINATIONS for the 87th annual Academy Awards (the Oscars) were announced from Beverly Hills yesterday (Thursday), where they were broadcast and streamed live. And topping the Oscars’ bill jointly were Birdman and Wes Anderson’s old Europe caper The Grand Budapest Hotel. They each had nine, including Best Picture. The Imitation Game trailed close behind with
eight nominations. All three were joined in Best Picture nominations by Boyhood, Whiplash, The Theory of Everything, American Sniper and Selma. There was good news for British actors as Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne, Rosamund Pike, Felicity Jones and Keira Knightley were all nominated. Up against Cumberbatch and Redmayne for Best Actor are Steve Carell, Brad-

ley Cooper and Michael Keaton. Cumberbatch, who plays codebreaker Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, said he was “knocked for six” by the nomination. He added: “I’m so excited and honoured to receive this recognition. It’s wonderful to be included by the Academy in this exceptional year of performances. “To ring my parents, who are both actors, and tell them that their only son has been nominated for an Oscar is one of the proudest moments of my life.” Meryl Streep is nominated for a 19th acting Oscar, breaking her own Academy Awards record. She is up for Best Supporting Actress for Into the Woods, alongside Knightley, Patricia Arquette, Laura Dern and Emma Stone. Nominated alongside Jones and Pike in the Best Actress category are previous Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Marion Cotillard, alongside Julianne Moore, who recently won the Golden Globe for her Still Alice role. The Theory Of Everything drama, which stars Eddie Redymane and Felicity Jones as Stephen and Jane Hawking, also earned a nomination. Clint Eastwood’s Navy SEAL drama American Sniper did especially well, landing six nods, including Best Actor for Bradley Cooper. But Richard Linklater’s coming-of-age epic Boyhood remains the bestpicture favourite after winning Sunday’s Best Drama at the Golden Globes. Those who missed out in the Best Actress category included Jennifer Aniston, nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in Cake, and Amy Ad-
ams who won the Golden Globe for best actress in a musical or comedy for Big Eyes. And there was disappointment for Angelina Jolie’s WWII epic Unbroken, which was not recognised, The Grand Budapest Hotel, which also won Best Comedy or Musi-
cal at the Globes, has emerged as the most unexpected awards heavyweight. With $59.1 million (£39m) at the North American box office (opening 10 months ago), it is also the most money-making, bestpicture entry. But that is likely to change soon after American Sniper goes
nationwide this weekend. As studios have focused more and more on easilymarketed blockbusters, Oscar season increasingly exists apart from the regular business of the films, in its own redcarpeted realm. And ratings are on the rise. Last year’s Oscars, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, drew 43 million viewers, making it the most-watched entertainment telecast in a decade. This year’s ceremony, on 22nd February, will be hosted for the first time by all-round entertainer Neil Patrick Harris, an award-winning star of stage and screen.

Upmarket Downton’s fresh tipple from US TWO Californian wines have been added to the Downton Abbey range, inspired by TV character Lady Cora Crawley. the American wife of the Earl of Grantham.
The Countess of Grantham Collection includes a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay, made with grapes sourced from Lodi, in California’s Central Valley. The bold, “fruit forward” pair complement the original two wines in the Downton range: a Merlot dominant red blend and a Muscadellebased white blend from Bordeaux. The California Cabernet is said to offer aromas of “ripe cherry, vanilla and spice”, while the Chardonnay boasts “tropical fruit and cit-
rus notes”. William Zysblat, co-founder of Downton Abbey Wines, said: “We’re thrilled to broaden our Downton Abbey portfolio to include these popular varieties, crafted with exceptional California fruit. “As legions of Down-
ton fans enjoy the show with a glass in hand, they now have even more choices with a new Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.” The new collection has gone on sale in the US, with both wines priced at $14.99 a bottle. The Downton Abbey
Wines’ brand is handled in the US by California-based LCF Wines a joint venture between the LangeTwins, Coors and Ficeli families. The fifth season of the award-winning TV series was shown in Britain last autumn.

It’s low-cal… and ‘skinny’
THE trend for lighter, lower calorie wines has been gathering pace rapidly in Britain and the States, after a stodgy start.
The category, sniffed at a few years ago and acknowledged as a barrier to success for wine merchants, has gradually overcome its poor image. As reported by the drinks business late last year, one in four bottles of “premium” Californian Pinot Nor and Chardonnay underwent the industrial alcohol removal process supplied by ConeTech in the past year. Sainsbury’s is com-
mitted to doubling its lighter alcohol range by 2020, slashing the abv (alcohol by volume) on its own-brand Prosecco last year. And the New Zealand wine industry is ploughing £8.5m into increasing its “skinny” wine output, thanks to more and more consumer demand for lower-alcohol wines. While low-cal wines have no set industry standard, they are generally at least 15% lighter than the standard 120 to 130 calories found in a typical 150ml serving. And just because a wine has less alcohol content, it doesn’t mean it has less flavour. Far from it, in some cases. News that the British Government has
negotiated a deal with the drinks industry to reduce the strength of pub house wines to below 12.5% abv will, no doubt, strike gloom into the hearts of those lovers of popular wines such as New Zealand sauvignon blanc and Australian shiraz. But the fact is that more than one glass of these wines can easily tip you over your recommended daily intake: a 125ml glass of 14% shiraz is 1.8 units, but switch that for a 12% French red and you’ve trimmed that to 1.5. There are plenty of wines around at a lower abv, but many of them are off-dry. That’s okay if you’re happy to drink Moscato or Mosel riesling with your Sunday roast, but not so good
if you’re trying to find a dry wine. It’s easier with white wines than red, admittedly, and there’s a whole host of dry French wines such as muscadet, inexpensive French sauvignon. And Gascon whites such as the fresh, lemony La Maison Elyse Sauvignon Blanc Colombard 2013 (a bargain basement £4 at Asda; 12% abv) regu-
larly check in at 12% or under, as do northern Italian whites such as gavi and Portugal’s vinho verde. A couple of low-cal wines which make ideal drinking on a sunny evening are the fragrant Caves de Pegões Dry Muscat 2013 (12% abv), from Setúbal in northern Portugual, and Rezabal Txacoli Getariako Txakolina 2013 (12% abv), from northern Spain.
The latter is so sharp that it’s almost like sucking a lemon - perfect for seafood! English wines regularly clock in at 12% abv or under. Camel Valley has made a glorious rosé for Fortnum & Mason, which sells it under its own label as Fortnum’s English Rosé (12% abv). Under 12.5% abv is more of a struggle for reds, especially for those from the new world. A rare exception is Tesco’s light, raspberry-scented Primarius Oregon Pinot Noir 2011 (12% abv), a modest price for an expensive region and better than most burgundies at a similar mark. If you’re trying to keep your alcohol intake down, though, your best bet could well be to drink fizz. Most prosecco and cava is under 12% abv, and a fair amount of champagne under 12.5% abv. In addition, they are less than 100 calories a glass.

By Val Sainsbury PEOPLE who eat a high fibre diet are less likely to die of any particular cause, according to new research covering nearly one million people. Chinese researchers say the finding might be explained by fibre’s potential to lower the risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and several types of cancer. Individuals should be encouraged to increase their dietary fibre intake “to potentially decrease the risk of premature death”, they say. Yang Yang, of the Shanghai Cancer Institute in China, and his colleagues pooled data from 17 previous studies that tracked 982,411 men and women, mostly in Europe and the US, and recorded about 67,000
16th January -22nd January 2015
Fibre so vital for long life, or is it? deaths. Yang’s team, who revealed their findings in the American Journal of Epidemiology, divided participants into five groups based on their daily fibre intake. Those in the top fifth, who consumed the greatest amount of fibre daily, were 16% less likely to die than those in the bottom fifth, who consumed the least amount. In addition, eight studies showed a 10% drop in risk for any cause of death with each 10gmper-day increase in fibre intake. The authors point out that the US Department of Agriculture recommends adults to eat 14gm of fibre in every 1,000 calories they take in. That translates to some 25gm a day for
women and 38gm daily for men. Victoria Burley, a nutrition researcher at the University of Leeds who was not involved in the study, said: “On average, intakes of dietary fibre in the US and other economically-developed countries are much lower than recommended goals - in the US, about half of what is advised.” Ms Burley told Reuters Health: “These study results are very much in line with earlier published analyses of the relationship between dietary fibre and risk of major chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, and cancers.” She said the benefits of consuming fibre-rich foods have been known for decades, including
lowering of blood cholesterol, blood pressure, blood glucose and insulin, and possibly reducing inflammation. “High-fibre foods may also make people feel full sooner, and for longer, which helps curb overeating and weight gain,” she added. “Some or all of these factors may underlie the reduction in mortality observed here. It’s not difficult to consume an extra 10gm of fibre a day. “This can come from two servings of wholegrain foods, such as breakfast cereal, and two servings of fruit or vegetables, for example.” But she did warn that the current study does not actually prove that eating more fibre is the reason some partici-
pants lived longer. Their reduced risk of death might be down to some other shared characteristic, like an overall healthier lifestyle, or perhaps some other property of the high-fibre foods, which tend to be nutritious in general. “Little is known about the best fibre sources for reducing disease risk whether the best sources are fruit and vegetables, legumes or grains,” she said. “But there is increasing evidence that cereal grains may offer the best risk-reductions for colon cancer and cardiovascular disease.” The nutrition expert said the study findings do not suggest that taking dietary fibre supplements will have the same
impact as eating fibrerich foods. Jessica Shapiro, a “wellness” dietitian at Montefiore Medicine Centre, New York, suggests reading labels and choosing foods with at least t3gm of fibre per serving. She also encourages eating a variety of highfibre foods at each meal and snack, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, seeds and nuts. Ms Shapiro said care should be taken when going from a low-fibre diet to a high-fibre one. “Your body needs time to adjust, so increase fibre content slowly, and make sure to consume extra water while doing so to help with digestion,” she added.
New Year’s resolutions By Sue McDonald FIRSTLY, like everybody else, I wish everyone a very Happy New Year. And while celebrations for each culture has its own flavour, there are certain common themes. The period leading up to New Year’s Day is a time for setting things straight, returning borrowed objects, paying off bills and reflecting on your shortcomings. The point is that this time between Christmas and New Year is one of reflection, putting things right, whether it be a
quarrel with a loved one, or cleaning the house. It is a time for taking stock and planning to improve our lives which is why in some cultures, people jump into the sea, literally washing away all the detrius of the last year. Then comes the New Year, with a clean slate, a fresh start and the intention to do and be better. This is the key to making resolutions for the year ahead. If you have made your resolutions, perhaps one of them is to improve your home, whether with a thorough clean and tidy, or something a bit more radical. Whatever your intentions, try to look at your home with fresh eyes,
as if you were entering it for the first time. Often, because we are so used to our surroundings, we only really “see” them when something is moved. Try moving some of your furniture around, even if it is only the cushions or a lamp, and look at it with a different eye. Perhaps it is time to renew that sofa bed which is looking a bit tired, or that mattress that has a loose spring, or maybe just to buy some new cupboards to hide all the junk you can´t bring yourself to throw out. Sofa beds have come a long way from pine arms and foam mattresses, and it is now possible to have a very comfortable sofa that converts into a proper bed with a sprung mattress. Equally, if your sofa is still comfortable and structurally sound, consider reupholstering rather than replacing it. With the money you save, you could have curtains to tone, and make your lounge look completely different! As far as beds are concerned, technology has certainly progressed in this area, so if you
haven’t replaced your mattresses in a while, you might like to look at the many options now available, including latex and viscoelastic, or a combination of sprung and visco for both support and comfort. If you find the Spanish beds a bit hard for your liking but the mattress still has some life in it (well, not literally I hope), why not consider a soft mattress topper to make it more comfortable? Perhaps your property is absolutely fine as it is, or if you rent, you might not want to invest too
much money in it. But consider a different colour throw and a couple of cushions for the sofa or the bed - for under 50 euros you can revamp the room, and you will “see” it as if it were all new! Unless you have a big budget to spend, try to work with what you already have. Maybe the curtain rails or poles are in good condition, which will reduce the cost of replacing the curtains considerably. The sun is a blessing in Tenerife, and one of the main reasons why many of us choose to live here.
But it´s not so great for your furniture! If you don’t have sunblock curtains, consider getting some to keep your rooms cooler and more private, and to protect your furniture. Apart from the usual white ones, sun curtain now comes in a wide range of colours, so you can brighten up and protect your home at the same time. If you don’t really know what you can do to make changes, why not ask us to come and give you a few ideas and a free quote. You may be pleasantly surprised!

AS EASY AS 1 2 3!
Bargain-hunters don’t know best! By Ruth Benson
By Carl from Robot
THE January sales are now underway, and we all want to come away with a bargain, but is it worth shopping in the sales?
ONE thing that really makes a difference to your hair and its condition is your choice of products. But I’m not going over the same issues as before.
We all know that sales are made up of stock that could not be sold, so why buy them when they are cheaper? The retail industry may be convincing us we got a bargain. We all like to let people know how much of a reduction we got off something, and it’s a great feeling knowing you didn’t pay full price. But is this really the case. Jess Cartner-Morley, writing for the Guardian, does not agree that the idea of us getting a bargain is overlooked when purchasing fashion in the sales. Jess compares fashion to food: “Would you want out-of-date food? So why isn’t it the same with fashion? Last season’s ‘must-have’ may be reduced, but it was last season’s.” She goes on to say how the fashion weeks and next-season trends become important when buying during the sales, and being savvy is key. Jess states that the fashion industry will not have key pieces in the sales - items that do not date or will be in fashion during the next year. They basically want you to buy what they can no longer sell. You are probably saying that is obvious. So what exactly are you to buy in the sales? At this time of year, winter stock will be reduced ready for the spring/summer collections coming into stores. This is when to buy good knitwear, coats and boots. Store them away for next winter and you will have saved money on a good purchase. Which magazine has listed the top 10 things to do when shopping in the sales - not just fashion but any purchases you make.
Firstly, know what you want. This may seem obvious, but how many of us have bought a bargain we don’t need or use? Secondly, know where the deals are: check the press, or word of mouth is a good way. Thirdly, use cash-back sites when online shopping. Okay, this is not the case here in Tenerife, but more shops are getting online, and they may have exclusive deals. Next is haggle. Now this is not something you can do here so much, either, in the retail shops. But you never know if you don’t try. The 10th suggestion is probably one I stick to and my husband hates,
but is very important. It’s not a bargain if you don’t need it. Getting caught up in the hysteria of the sales, an item may sees good value, but you know it may be a bit short, or long or big or tight. Yes you could get it adjusted, but will you? The colour’s not you, and you need to buy shoes to match ... the list is endless. Go with your gut instinct and, most importantly when shopping, take a friend. If she’s a good friend, she will be honest and tell you if it is a bargain or not. So off you go folks into the sales - and happy bargain-hunting!

I am amazed that many of you seem to be bewildered about what type of hair you have, and its requirements. It’s not difficult to analyse, but many of you seem to grab the first product that comes along and hope for the best. Firstly, if you have NORMAL hair - very few people do - then use a normal shampoo and conditioner. But what does normal mean? Well, this hair is not blow-dried, has no colour, is shortish in length, doesn’t live in
the sun - and resides in a soft-water area. See what I mean? No one has this hair, so the “normal” description does not apply when it comes to hair care. So let’s take on “greasy”. This is lank, lifeless and gets oily quickly. It usually has no colour and needs washing frequently. This type of hair rarely occurs here because of the drying conditions of the air and the hard water that dries out hair in Tenerife. So we are narrowing it down a little, aren’t we? Next comes “slightly dry”. This hair type is common here because of our heat and the general atmosphere. Usually, this hair has a little colour or is going - or has gone grey. These factors dry out your hair, so it often needs the use of a “dry hair” shampoo and conditioner, treating it now and again to a masque.
Finally, we get to the 80% of women … those who have very dry to highly-damaged hair. Yes, over 80% of you out there need to use an intense shampoo and conditioner to protect your hair. You might feel that you don’t need such products. But if you have coloured hair, use heat appliance, swim, sunbathe or have longer hair, then you should ALWAYS use products for dry/damaged hair. It stands to reason that if you live here in sunny Tenerife, your hair will be dryer than normal, and you must replace what you are taking out by putting back those essential oils. You can rarely overcondition your hair. It will soak up what it needs, as does your skin - giving back to it what, on a daily basis, you are taking away. You cannot expect to have the lovely locks you dream of if you are not prepared to look after your tresses. Again, scrimping on a decent shampoo and conditioner will tell the tale when you visit the salon. We can see exactly who do and don’t look after their hair as we are doing it. Don’t expect that salon feeling to last as you leave us because you need to keep it up at home, too. So treat your hair well and we will all see the difference. If you don’t treasure it, you know the one and only solution: those shiny sharp things that sit on my salon trolley!

Take a letter, Miss Jones!
By Monica Dyson BY now, works’ Christmas parties are just a memory and, in some cases, a painful one when people wish they hadn’t drunk quite so much!
In the Fifties, the UK workplace was a very different place from that of today, although I think Christmas was celebrated pretty much the same. It seems that although people generally worked much longer hours in much tougher conditions, and with fewer holidays, they were happier in their jobs than people are now. Apparently, there is more work-related stress, in part attributed to modern technology like laptops and IPhones, higher expectations in standards of living and the need to “Keep up with the Joneses”. Many women still stayed at home, the hours of 9-5 meant just that, and you had a job for life with a gold watch at the end of it or even a gold carriage clock at a time when you certainly weren’t expecting to watch the clock any more. The average weekly wage in 1952 was £7.50, the working week was usually around 40-48 hours and, if you were lucky, you got 16 days holiday a year. There was 8.7 million people working in manufacturing industries, compared with the 2.5 million today, with 880,000 employed in mining. Today, only 60,000! Office work has changed as much as anything, especially for women.
People may be familiar with the images of the Fifties’ office, as portrayed in programmes like Mad Men, with booze, cigarettes and a sexuallycharged atmosphere; not least because of the pointy bras, high-heels and stockings worn by the secretaries. But that popular image of women wasn’t common to the US only. It was just the same here in the UK. The dress code was pretty much the same, whichever side of the Atlantic you were on. Calf-length sheath dresses, blouses with dirndl skirts. No trousers, no thick tights and certainly no jeans. Men always wore a suit, collar and tie. Generations of women went to commercial college when they left school to learn shorthand, typing and other secretarial skills to have, as their mothers put it, “Something to fall back on”. It was hoped that they would one day rise to the top and actually become a secretary,
graduating with honours from the typing pool and, who knows, one day marry the boss. By the beginning of the 20th century, secretaries had become a bit of an icon. Girls wanted to be one and boys wanted to marry one because they were seen as ideal wife material. An early manual of secretarial skills advised: “Learn his preferences and obey them, even if you do not always agree with his ideas or methods. Assume he is always right, and look after him. A man likes to have his wants attended to.” Sound advice for a wife’s role in those days also. The stereo-typical view of secretaries, carried through to the Fifties and Sixties, was often associated with husband-hunting, coffee-getting and a sex-bomb image which wasn’t helped by many of the saucy seaside postcards of the day, depicting buxom blondes sitting on their boss’s knee!
In fact, during the Sixties, Helen Gurley Brown, in her best-selling book Sex and the Single Girl, stated: “I don’t think it is wrong to use your sex-appeal and femininity to get ahead in your job.” By the Seventies, that statement was considered quite shocking, and the term “sexual harassment” was heard for the first time. Not before time either because, for decades, young women working in offices had endured the unwelcome advances of older men brushing past them or, worse, in filing rooms. A friend of mine working in a local Sheffield steel works tells of a persistent pest, whose lecherous behaviour was known to the management. But they at-
tributed it to his time serving in the Korean War! They were told to just ignore it! The equipment in early offices meant that it took forever to actually get a job done, much of it still dating back to the pre-war era. Bit by bit, accounting machines, dictating machines, reproductive equipment, sit-up-and-beg manual typewriters and calculators were upgraded, with other smaller, innovative items like staplers, hole-punchers and pencil-sharpeners coming into use. But copying machines remained huge and laborious to use for long enough, and often took 10-15 minutes to produce one copy. At least the invention did eventually take
off, despite the Head of IBM, who was first approached with the invention, saying “I don’t know what use anyone could find for a machine that would make copies of documents. It wouldn’t be feasible!’ Thereby, forcing the inventor to found Xerox. Typing pools, carbon paper, correcting fluid and a protocol including separate dining rooms and toilets - and even lifts for the management. These were all part of early office life. The “clack, clack, ping” of the typewriter is heard no more and, in fact, the last typewriter ever manufactured in Britain was donated by manufacturer Brother to the National Science Museum in London as representing the end of an era. The staff of the company stood round, many in tears, as the machine was packed into a box. I feel like that sometimes when my computer plays up!

Fun Golfers parting gift SAN Miguel Lions Club members were surprised and delighted to receive some special visitors at their monthly meeting on Monday.
And old club friend Harry Fleming had good and bad news for members. His Fun Golf Society, an annual source of much-welcomed funds for the Lions, has folded through lack of interest after many years of their members pounding the Los Palos golf course in Los Cristianos every month. Club Secretary Ralph Solomon offered special thanks to Julie, Harry and Clive, who organised the Fun Golfers, and added: “This donation is most welcome and will go towards our May Disadvantaged Children’s Holiday.” The Lions’ next
fund-raiser is, by coincidence, another golf competition at Los Palos: ex-world darts champion Eric Bristow’s Golf Day on 31st January, in association with Oasis Fm. San Miguel Lions are still looking for backers, so if you are interested in sponsoring the competition or even a hole, contact Richard on 674 848 801. Raffle tickets for the event go on sale from Monday in the Lions’ Charity Shop in The Dip, Costa del Silencio. It is open 10am-2pm from Monday to Saturday. If you are interested in joining the Lions, visit the Charity Shop and speak to members there. It will give you a chance to meet people, enjoy various events, help in the local community and join in the annual Disadvantaged Children’s Holiday programme, plus many other projects.
Harry Fleming hands over a final 700-euro donation from the Fun Golfers to San Miguel Lions’ Vice-President Jackie Maun Rodriguez
Dog of the Week - Danko DANKO is a seven-year-old spaniel-cross and a real cutie. He is handsome and loyal, and he really needs a family who will love him forever.
He is vaccinated, sterilised, and microchipped - and for all this, we ask a oneoff adoption fee of 110 euros. For more information, call Sue on 629 388 102. Fun dog show Our dog show, in collaboration with San Miguel Town Hall, will go ahead next Sunday (25th Jan) from midday, next to the Cultural Centre at Llano del Camello. It’s just two euros to enter your pooch, so come and have a great afternoon with us. As our last dog show was so successful, we have added in a fancy dress category - it will be fun. Whale and Dolphin trip On Sunday, 21st
February, we have chartered the Mustcat catamaran and will be having a private party from 230pm, sailing from Las Galletas. If the sad fact of whales and dolphins being kept in captivity and performing tricks for food bothers you, come out with us and see them in their natural environment. Tickets cost 20 euros, which includes drinks, for the three-hour excursion, which is less than half of the normal price. A donation from the proceeds will be made to Sea Shepherd, to recognise the outstanding work they
do to preserve our oceans and marine life. For more information on either of the above events, call Sue on 629 388 102. Live Arico shops If you have quality unwanted clothes, cds, dvds, shoes, household items or children’s clothing, call Siobhan now on 630 857 626. And do come and see us,. We have shops in Los Cristianos, Calle Revron near Churchills Bar, and San Eugenio, opposite Hotel La Nina by Amandas bar at las Carabelas complex. Both shops open from 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday, and until 3pm Saturday and Sundays.

Supercar says it all!
By Jav HONDA have finally revealed their all-new supercar, more than 25 years since the original NSX debuted at the Chicago Motor Show.
The new NSX, unveiled at the current Detroit show (and wearing the badge of luxury US arm Acura), will feature a twin-turbo hybrid drivetrain packing around 550bhp. Power will be distributed via all four wheels using three electric motors and a mid-mounted V6 petrol engine. It means that the car is longer and wider than the original concept. It looks like a cross between an Audi R8 and McLaren 650S with its aluminium composite and steel body, and the bold new NSX casts a striking profile. The low roof-line and gaping side-vents provide an aggressive look, while at the rear there are four centrally-mounted exhausts, LED lights and a raceinspired diffuser. Every element of the NSX’s exterior design has been carefully sculpted for highspeed stability. It has gone through extensive wind-tunnel testing at Honda’s development centre in Ohio, leading to modifications to the bonnet vents, side air intakes and boot spoiler. The design has been optimised to concentrate the weight low and towards the middle of the car, and Honda claim it has the lowest centre of gravity in its class. Mike Accavitti, senior vice-president of Acura, said: “The NSX delivers pinnacle supercar performance, with zerodelay acceleration and confidence -inspiring driving dynamics.” It also gets a fully independent, all-aluminium front and rear suspension set-up, as well as carbon ceramic brakes and 19-inch front and 20-inch rear alloys. Inside, the show car
is trimmed in bright red leather, with the driver and passenger cocooned by the high centre-console and intricate dashboard. The instrument cluster features an adaptable TFT display, while the centre-console
boasts a large screen above heating and climate controls. The engine ‘start’ button takes centre stage, nestled within the ‘Integrated Dynamics System’ dial control, allowing the driver to choose between Quiet, Sport,
Sport+ and Track driving modes. This mean machine also features a launch mode for lightning-fast standing starts. The new car will be built exclusively at Honda’s Performance Manufacturing Centre
in Ohio and, despite being badged as an Acura in the States, it will be sold under the Honda banner in Europe. Prices are set to be around £99,000 in the US, with order books opening in summer. Europe will have to wait
until early the following year, with no cost yet suggested. The NSX, specifically created to bring a “new sports experience” to the supercar segment, challenges conventional beliefs about supercars, much as the first generation did all those years ago. It is being developed under the concept of a “human-centered supercar,” which, says the company, “puts the driver first in every aspect of its design, with its state-of-the-art hybrid supercar.” Ted Klaus, Acura’s chief engineer and global development leader, says in typical Americanese: “Our global team embraced the challenge to create a new sports car experience, leveraging new technology to deliver incredibly vivid performance in a vehicle that responds intuitively and immediately to the will of the driver. “The NSX delivers pinnacle supercar performance, with zero-delay acceleration and exhilarating, confidence-inspiring driving dynamics.” So really, it’s just a question of finding that extra few bob to own the perfect car!

Adeje Rally’s so important THE opening race of the 2015 Spanish Asphalt Rally Championship season will be held in Adeje on 10-11th April.
Adolfo Alonso by the sport’s local team president, Policarpo Delgado, and Team Factory boss Orlando Méndez. They outlined their plans for the rally, promising “a lot of surprises” during the event. The rally’s return to the national stage took time and effort, and the announcement was even more welcome this year because, said the Mayor: “We are also celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Ral-
It marks the return of the Adeje Rally on the national circuit, and it replaces the El Bierzo Rally in the calendar. The news was relayed to Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and Sports Councillor
ly Villa de Adeje.” He added that the event was of great importance to Adeje, and not just within the borough’s sporting department but the tourist sector as well, “because it adds to our excellent image here and abroad”, he said. “We will incorporate this sporting event into our promotional agenda and it will definitely be of interest to many who visit us.” The Rally Villa de Adeje will be held a
week before the Rally Islas Canarias, the other regional circuit, which means drivers can take part in both in the hunt for national title points. Policarpo Delgade said: “This is very positive news for Adeje, for the team and for all the fans of motor racing and sport in general on the Island. “We fought long and hard to get into the Nationals, and we are very proud to have achieved our goal.”
Ronaldo’s golden hat-trick REAL Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who learned much of his craft as a youngster with Manchester United, has won the Ballon d’Or world footballer of the year award for the second year running.
The Portugal captain beat Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to the accolade. Ronaldo defended his status as the world’s best convincingly with 37.66% of all votes to capture the title a third time. Messi, his Barcelona and Argentina counterpart, who won four years in a row until Ronaldo beat him last year, was second on 15.76%. He was narrowly ahead of Bayern Munich and Germany keeper Manuel Neuer, who polled 15.72% of the vote. Ronaldo, who scored 52 goals in 43 games during 2014, looked emotional when collecting the award from former France, Barcelona and Arsenal striker Thierry Henry. The 29-year-old, a key member of the side who won the European Champions League last season, said: “I would
like to thank all of those who voted for me - my president, my coach and Real Madrid. “It has been an unforgettable year, and to win this trophy at the end of it is something incredibly unique.” Team of the Year The three candidates for the Ballon d’Or were all picked in the Team of the Year, along with defenders Philipp Lahm, David Luiz, Thiago Silva and Sergio Ramos, midfielders Andres Iniesta, Toni Kroos and Angel Di
Maria and forward Arjen Robben. Fifa Goal of the Year (Puskas Award ) Colombia’s James Rodriguez won Fifa’s goal of the year award for his World Cup strike against Uruguay. Incredibly, he beat Ireland’s Stephanie Roche. who scored a belter for Peamount against Wexford in the Irish women’s top flight in front of a handful of spectators. She had hoped to be the first female winner with her
sensational strike, involving great skill. But her 33% of the public vote was not enough to topple Rodriguez, who secured 42%. Manchester United striker Robin van Persie - the third nominee earned just 11% for his diving header against Spain in the World Cup. Men’s coach of the year Germany boss Joachim Low won this prized crown after leading his country to World Cup glory in Brazil, beating Argentina 1-0 in the final.
And that followed his team’s earth-shattering 7-1 dismissal of home side Brazil in the semifinals. “It is a huge honour after what has been an incredibly successful year,” said the 54-year-old. “It’s the icing on the cake the cake obviously being the World Cup. “I’m just taking this award on behalf of everybody who has taken this team to where they are. I would like to thank all the German coaches, who do so much good work with the young players. They are all coaches of the year.” Low beat Diego Simeone, who led Atletico Madrid to the Spanish title and Champions League final, and Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, whose side beat their city rivals to become European champions for a record 10th time. Women’s World Player Wolfsburg and Germany midfielder Nadine Kessler was named women’s player of the year. The 26-year-old beat Brazil’s Marta and US international Abby Wambach. Kessler said: “My heart is beating madly at the moment. I don’t think I ever thought in my life I would achieve this moment. “Without my teammates and my coach, this would never have been possible. I have a
great degree of gratitude that I must give to my family. They have seen me through all the difficult times.” Women’s world coach Wolfsburg boss Ralf Kellermann was named women’s world football coach after leading the German club to a successful defence of the Champions League. The 46-year-old said: “This award is an outstanding moment. Unfortunately, I’ve picked up an individual award for what is team sport, so I dedicate this to my whole team. “I would also like to pay tribute to Wolfsburg midfielder]Junior Malanda, who was so sadly taken from us two days ago.” Kellermann beat Germany Under-20 boss Maren Meinert and Japan boss Norio Sasaki to the award. Fair Play Award This went to the thousands of volunteers who gave up their time to work at Fifa competitions - including the World Cup - over the past 12 months. Presidential Award Fifa president Sepp Blatter chose this for “a person who has made a superlative contribution to football without seeking to monopolise the limelight”. The winner was Japanese journalist Hiroshi Kagawa, who covered his 10th World Cup last summer at the age of 89.

Real Betis 3 CD Tenerife 1 IN many ways, Tenerife were on a hiding to nothing when they made the trek to the south of Spain last weekend.
Real Betis are on the sort of run which can change a season, and they were far too strong for Tenerife in a match where there were few positives. The hosts’ recent form, coupled by the return of popular manager Pepe Mel, saw over 30,000 people roar their team home. They always looked too good, but they were certainly helped by the ref. If Tenerife didn’t have bad luck, they wouldn’t have had any luck! They were holding the green-and-white tide at bay midway through the first half when the sporting Gods struck. Young keeper Carlos Abad, rather innocuously, managed to strain a knee ligament - the exact same injury which befell Roberto and gave Carlos his chance a few weeks back. The teenager has Position

wonder goal from Diego Ifran. At this level he is a super player, and his goals are proving invaluable. The joy was short lived for Tenerife, though, as Betis launched a fierce offensive. Twenty minutes from time, Castro’s second goal broke Tenerife hearts. And when Carlos Ruiz picked up the fourth red card of his career, the game was up. Moments later, Jorge Molina added the hosts’ third and punched salt into the Tenerife wound. So Tenerife hit the midway mark of the season this weekend, four points clear of the drop zone but eight away from the play-offs. Another player left this week when Maxi Lopez was moved on. He was quite a disappointment. There is no doubt he had the skills to succeed at this level, but something was missing. He was guilty of squandering some easy chances in the first few games, and maybe this rocked his confidence. Lopez becomes the fifth summer signing
to have already left the club, and there is no sign of any reinforcements. The attempt to sign goalkeeper Dani Hernandez is dragging on. He still wants to come, but something is stopping the switch. Maybe Tenerife are trying to get Diego Rivas back for another spell? The efforts to get a back-up striker are now bordering on the farcical. All week, Tenerife have been trying to entice Joselu from thirdtier Racing Ferrol. He has a fine record over the last few seasons and is the main reason Racing are gunning for promotion. But he is set to join Mallorca. He turned down a move to Santa Cruz last year and has snubbed us again. Even Racing’s sporting director, Juan Lago, got in on the act, saying: “Why would he go to Tenerife? Next season they could be in Segunda B and we could be in Segunda A.” Ouch! On Sunday, Numancia are in town. They are struggling a bit at
the moment but have drawn their last four. This includes the crazy 6-6 match with Lugo the weekend before Christmas, when both defences had been on the Egg Nog. Numancia’s two main players are both hated in Santa Cruz. And I mean with a passion. Natalio and Julio Alvarez summed up everything that was wrong with CD Tenerife in the summer of 2010. They joined after relegation from La Liga and they were expected to fire us straight back up. But they never ever tried. You can’t fool the fans. Alvarez scored just three goals in 30 matches, while Natalio did little better. He notched just four goals in a pitiful campaign. They will both get the “welcome” on Sunday. Sergi Enrich is the player to watch out for. He has improved every season, and I thought he was superb in a match with Recreativo back in November. He has scored as many goals already this season as he did in the last campaign.

Playgirls Chuck Spears away! YOU are only as good as your last game, so the saying goes. So the rest of the teams in Division 2 better watch out ... Ourplace Playgirls are coming to get you!
After 18 fruitless matches, they finally made the win column after taking the trebles leg to claim victory over the Spear Chuckers. Well done girls. Leaders Waterfall Warrior might have overdone it a bit during the festive period, and they almost came unstuck at home against Chipeque Chippers. In fact, they had to win the final rubber to avoid a
rare defeat. That gave The Palms a chance to narrow the gap, and they duly obliged by whipping Marilyns 7-1, aided by a maximum from John. Palms Sports Bar

travelled to The Rebels, and they, too, dished out the new year’s greetings by recording the same scoreline. No doubting the shock result of the week - it came at Picas-
sos as they entertained Division 1 title hopefuls Trap Door. Were the spider men a bit rusty, or had they enjoyed a little too much brandy butter? Safe to say that Picas-
sos, currently propping up this league, don’t really care because they will be basking in the glory of an excellent 5-3 win. So the lead at the top changes hands again, with the Playboys now leading the way, courtesy of their 6-2 success over Clouseaus. Andy hit a 180 for Emerald Lounge as they took five points from Pas O Nadas, while Naughty Nautas also hit five as they beat Sundowners. Elsewhere, any lingering hopes of a title challenge may have been dashed for Gaffers A as they were held to a draw at Summerlands. With only six matches left to play in the Premier League, Bar 180 A will be pretty confident of retaining their title.
And they were in top form at Target Titans, dropping just a single point. With a 14-point cushion, and a game in hand, they will be listening for the fat lady to start clearing her throat! The Pub opened up their 2015 account with a visit to Gaffers B, and it seems there was no sign of any New Year hangover. High checkouts of 148 by Duke and 134 by Calvo for The Pub sent them on the way to a handy seven-point haul that puts them just a point behind Phoenix Bar and Target Army. But the Army boys will be disappointed at missing a chance to go into second place, despite earning a 5-3 win at Bar 180 B.

When it comes to the Krunch... THERE were some high-scoring teams in the Oasis Fm Fantasy League this week, and most strikers had their scoring boots on. This resulted in somewhat of a decent pointsscoring week for the majority of the managers. Also, we are well into the transfer window, so
it might be worth looking at one or two of the league’s new names. Chelsea regained their lead at the top and, as a result of their good home win against Newcastle, they provided three players for the point-scoring team of the week. Arsenal also contributed two, with the rest made up of players from Leicester, Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Man City, Burnley and West
Brom. This was reflective of the teams at the bottom getting some good results. There has been yet another change at the top of the league, although Harri Lobban keeps second spot. At the summit is now the league’s oldest manager (sorry mate), Stephen Snook, with his Kingsmead Krunchers. They hold a two-point lead, so it could all change again next week.
Performance of the week came from Christopher Lewis and his Allez Allez Oh team, with a strong 85 points. He was helped by his captain, Alexis Sanchez, who weighed in with a huge 38 points. So the Fantasy League is still wide open and it can change in a blink of the eye. The more serious managers, now looking at the new players being bought in, are starting
to tinker with line-ups as one or two players are hitting form regu-
larly with good performances. Will a diamond be unearthed?

Jokers wild - with delight! WE had a break from league action this week as the first round of the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup took place.
And, as with any cup competition, all eyes were on matches where a potential giant-killing was on the cards. On paper, there were a few potential banana skins for Division One sides. But on the night, the majority of games went the way of the top-flight teams. However one or two were made to work hard to progress to the second round. Big shock of the night came in the game between The Peacocks, from Division One and Waterfall Jokers, from Division Two. John got the visitors off to a great start but Peacocks, an experienced team, took the next three frames to go ahead. For some reason, though, they took their foot off the gas and the Jokers hit back. After eight frames it
was level pegging, and the Jokers carried on where they left off and soon made it 6-4. But Craig and then Pete secured the final two frames for the home side to level the scores and force a 13th frame. Both captains nominated a player: Pete from the Peacocks versus John for the Jokers. It was a tense finale and John, who had won all three of his games, again stood firm to make it four from four and give the Second Division side a famous win. It wasn’t the only game on the night to go to a decider as two Division One sides, Terrace Bar B and Palms Bar B couldn’t be separated either. Terrace B had a chance to win the game in the last frame ,but Chris fluffed his lines and let Palms back in, taking it to a one-frame shoot-out finale. Mario, for the Terrace, had been in fine form. But he came up against one of the league’s tough cookies in Graeme. The sea-
soned Leeds man never looked in trouble and got Palms over the line to take their place in the draw for round two. Treehouse A, who are going well in the top flight, came up against Division Two promotion hopefuls Inn the Pink B. The lower-league team played some solid pool and made life hard for the Chayofa team. It was close all the way, but Treehouse got over the line with a 7-5 victory. In what was probably the most anticipated game of the night, Gaffers A, current First Division leaders, hosted Tenerife Hammers A, last season’s League and Cup winners. These games are normally tight, so much so that it is now dubbed “El Classico”. However, on Tuesday, it was oneway traffic. In short, Gaffers A were unplayable, making Hammers look rather average. Gaffers raced into a quick lead and never looked back. Jambo, normally the strongest of Hammers, was 7-balled twice and
looked a shadow of his normal self. The match finished 9-3, the Hammers leaving with tails firmly between their legs. Psychologically, it really was a hammer blow to their hopes for the season. Sporting Jester A lead Division Two and look like being a Division One side next season, so it was going to be interesting to see how they fared against good yardsticks Dreamers A. The Jesters were at home, where they have been so strong all season. But Tommy and his Los Cristianos team are renowned for being strong in the second half of the season. And this proved to be the case. The first set was even, but the Dreamers showed their class by taking all four middle frames. Their straightforward 8-4 win gave the Jesters a little taste of what life will be like if they do get promoted. A couple of Division One sides had relatively comfortable nights against Second Division opponents. Blair’s Exiles B beat Picasso’s

10-2, while Terrace Bar A recorded the same scoreline at Next Door. When was the last time Terrace A got 10 frames on the same night? Waterfall Rebels also hit double figures against Tenerife Pool Tables. Inn the Pink A, who will fancy their chances of lifting the Cup, started their charge by easing past Gaffers B 8-4. And in an all-Division Two match, Sporting Jester B scraped past Hoppys Bar 7-5. The two Los Abrigos teams also matched each other in terms of
scores. The Phoenix put Tenerife Hammers C to the sword, winning 9-3, while stablemates Phoenix Potters travelled to Valle San Lorenzo to take on league newcomers The Crown. The home side settled well and eased into a 3-1 lead, with a shock looking on the cards. Geoff and his old boys were stunned. But they have been around a long time - an awful long time if you have seen their passports - and they finally rallied well. Even a giant pizza couldn’t deter them as they rattled off eight frames without answer to win the match and make the last 16. The draw for the next round will take place over the weekend. Bluebell A will take their second-round place, along with Dreamers B, James Place and Palms A. Finally, the eagerlyanticipated match with the Scotland lads is just around the corner. The provisional squad will be named in the next few days for the annual event, which sees the Direct Telecom Pool League defending the trophy they won a year ago. There will also be a football and golf challenge for the first time, and any league players who wish to take part should contact Adi on 609 881 712.

Premier League preview
Villa must get skates on By Adi Benson IT was business as usual in the Barclays Premier League, with most of last weekend’s fixtures going to the form team.
A slight gap opened at the top after Man City dropped points, but things are getting more interesting at the foot of the table. Just nine points separate the bottom 10 clubs, and it’s shaping up to be a really close run-in to avoid relegation. Aston Villa v Liverpool Villa are currently on a slippery slope and they need to get off quickly. Part of the reason is that they have scored just 11 goals in 21 games. The pressure is starting to build on manager Paul Lambert. But if Benteke could remember where he left his scoring boots, they might just be okay. Liverpool are starting to grind out wins and haven’t been beaten for a while, but Villa have been their bogey team in recent seasons. One or two of their summer signings are starting to show signs of quality, and Markovic was outstanding against Sunderland. Prediction: Away win Burnley v C Palace Burnley had a mustwin game against QPR last week - and did just that, hauling themselves out of the relegation places. That will be a massive boost for the club, coupled with Danny Ings looking like a Premier striker. They will hope to kick on with another three points against their fellow-strugglers. There’s a mini-league down at the bottom and if you are to survive, you need to beat the teams around you. That’s is what new boss Alan Pardew will be concentrating on at Palace. A good win at Spurs last time out and the loan signing of Yaya Sanogo from Arsenal will give them confidence. A win for either team here will put daylight between
themselves and the relegation fight. Prediction: Home win Leicester v Stoke The Foxes helped themselves to a muchneeded three points last weekend against a poor Villa side, and they will be hoping for a repeat performance. Although they stayed bottom of the league, they are now just three points from safety, and victory in this fixture, dependent on other results, could see them climb out of the relegation zone. They need to score more goals, though. Stoke looked pretty good over the New Year, but they failed to show up against Arsenal and it was probably their worst defensive display in a while. With Leicester’s blunt attack, though, they should have an easier afternoon. And with Crouch now hitting form and Bojan supplying him, a win could come here. Prediction: Away win QPR v Man Utd Rangers will delight at having a home fixture after failing to collect a single point up on the road this season. Even the visit of United will not dampen their belief that they can take points from this clash. They are hard to beat at Loftus Road and, with Charlie Austin finding his goal-scoring form, they could take the full three points. I cannot work out
what is going on at United. True, they are fourth in league, yet I have not seen them play well this season. They dropped Falcao in the last game and didn’t muster a single shot on target. Van Gaal needs to find his best X1, but this is proving difficult because of his injury toll. Prediction: Draw Swansea v Chelsea Swansea are nicely placed and are still in the hunt for a Europa League place. But with the Wilfried Bony-toMan City £28m deal going through, this could put a dent in their season. Garry Monk may get the money to spend in the transfer window, but it will be hard to replace Bony (no pun intended). Chelsea didn’t have to get out of second gear against Newcastle and, with City dropping points at Everton; they have a two-point
cushion. They know a win here will put even more pressure on City, who don’t play until Sunday, so they will obviously try to put the game to bed early. Prediction: Away win Spurs v Sunderland Tottenham hit the buffers last week after a run of decent form, so they will welcome this home game against a team they should be beating. There is talk of a new striker within the transfer window, which would help take the burden off Harry Kane. And if they can bring in a proven goalscorer, they could make a serious challenge for a Champions League place. Sunderland are right on the edge of the relegation places and, without a result here, they could slip into the bottom three. They were poor last time out against Liverpool, and if
they are to survive, they will need to roll their sleeves up. Prediction: Home win Newcastle v S’hampton Newcastle are still managerless, which could have an adverse affect on their season. They started well against Chelsea but faded after 20 minutes and were never really in the game. They can’t afford many more slipups as the chasing pack are getting closer, and they could plunge into the bottom half of the table. Southampton, who are proving to be no flash-in-the-pan, claimed another scalp with three points against Man Utd, but it wasn’t a tough game. They have proved themselves in defence by being tight at the back and not conceding many goals. Right now, they genuinely look as though they could hang on to the Champions League spot. Prediction: Away win West Ham v Hull It was interesting this week to note that Sam Allardyce accused Roberto Martinez of being one-dimensional over the way his team play. Until this season, Big Sam only ever played the longball game. But his West Ham have been a revelation and they play some attractive football. They are certainly proving the critics wrong, me
included, because I said they would be relegated (sorry Bobby Baker). Hull have got work to do if they are to stay in the Premier League, especially as their rivals are hitting form and picking points up. The Tigers are another team who cannot score goals, and injuries to their strikers haven’t helped. They will need to spend because their stroke force could both be out for six weeks. Prediction: Home win Man City v Arsenal City’s hard work over the festive period in getting back level with Chelsea was undone with Saturday’s draw at Everton. They can’t afford to lose any more ground, so this really is a must-win game, especially against one of their top-four rivals. Fortunately, they are ready to bring Aguero back, and this should help strengthen the side with Yaya Toure away on international duty. Arsenal looked good against Stoke, but they still look a oneman team, with Alexis Sanchez again their outstanding performer. If the rest of the side put as much effort in as he does, they could be challenging for the league. Prediction: Draw Everton v West Brom The Toffees got their season back on track last week with a battling draw against Man City, but they are still in the bottom half of the table which, in the fans’ eyes, is not good enough. The players have asked the manager if they can adopt a more direct route, especially with Lukaku up front. And sometimes, keeping it simple pays dividends. This is certainly a game they should win. West Brom were winners against Hull and will want another win against a team who are just a point in front of them. Berahino scored last weekend and, providing they hang on to him, they could have a big say in the remainder of their season. Prediction: Home win
