Carol’s cancer coach is on the road at last Continued from front.
TWO years after Carol Chappell began raising funds for a minibus to transport cancer victims to Canderlaria Hospital, she has realised her ambition.
After some magnificent fund-raising feats, including a monthly market and generous donations from supporters, proud Carol was handed the keys by Pedro Cabrera Montelongo, boss of Ford’s Archiautos showroom in Las Chafiras, last Thursday. She promptly handed the 18-seater coach over to Spanish cancer charity Contra de Cancer (AECC), as promised, to the delight of everyone gathered there. When official funding for free transport to Candelaria from the South was chopped in 2013, Carol promptly set up a daily voluntary rota system service for a mother and daughter, both hit by the deadly disease. The scheme lasted nearly six months until Carol realised it was putting an awful strain on everyone involved. And that’s when the coach idea came to her. “These volunteers probably wouldn’t want their names mentioned, but their kindness has not been forgotten,” she said. Once her story had been published in Canarian Weekly, a local company became involved and promptly made available a suitable mini-bus until hers materialised. Now, she is celebrating her magnificent achievement, after many anxious days and nights of worry. Carol told those gathered at Archiautos that although she founded the entire project, superb backing came from Brits and companies on the Island who would probably never benefit from it.
So far, a total of around 75,000 euros has been raised, which has paid for the bus and two years of running, maintenance, insurance and petrol costs. She mentioned the Swallows, who donated 4,000 euros to purchase two permanent seats, and other members of the Los Cristianos
group who had donated privately. Carole Hart, who runs the Swallows, said: “It’s a great achievement by Carol and everyone involved, and it will make such a difference to people’s lives at a time they most need it.” Carol Chappell told Canarian Weekly: “It is good to have the op-
portunity to say ‘Thank You’ to so many people who have helped me with this campaign. “Carole Page has been with me from the start, and has introduced me to a lot of generous golfing friends.” Ann Plummer, with her boundless energy, has produced hundreds of prizes for her tombolas
or raffles on my Market Days. And thank you again to all the people who’ve helped me in one way or another on those days, not just in raising money but creating a good fun atmosphere while doing so. “Dacil Martin offered to raise money by organising events for the Spanish people, and her
professional approach proved extremely successful.” Various people and businesses and individuals made substantial contributions, including the Swallows Golf Society at Golf del Sur; John Eddie, from Glasgow; John Harris, for Stuart; Paloma Beach Golf; Margaret & Chris Green of Wingate School; Masons Logia Ave 73; Robin, Lynn, Gavin & Bar 180, at San Blas; Keith & Jane & Tenerife Sur Golf Saturday Members’ Club; Frank Moss & Scallywaggs Golf Society; Greta Dermott-Clarke & La Caixa Los Gigantes. La Caixa Bank at Los Gigantes gave 1,000 euros and La Caixa, Las Americas, also donated. Others who also donated were Christine & Phil Elliott; Terry Hibbert; Doris & Alan Hodgkinson; Kate Wilson; Philip Bernard Hoban; David Rahm; Joyce; Martin Bond; Michael Underwood family. Carol, still in a daze after completing her marathon mission, added: “I don’t know the names of people at the presentation ceremony, but leading Cancer Administration officials were there, including the top man in the whole of Spain, and a lovely lady called Carlota Cobo Hernandez, from the Santa Cruz office of AECC, who I’ve been dealing with, and who organised everything. “The Mayors of Arona and San Miguel were also there, and Carmen, representing Adeje Town Hall.” There will be an instant reminder of her sheer determination to help cancer victims when another Market Day is held on Friday, 6th February, at La Peppa Food Hall (above Dial Prix & Santander), CC Pasarella, (nr Paradise Park Hotel), Los Cristianos. It features nearly-new clothes and household ítems, and proceeds will boost mini-bus funds for the future.

Ex-King Juan’s in bother again A PATERNITY suit has been brought against former Spanish King Juan Carlos by a 48-year-old Belgian woman, who claims to be his daughter.
Ingrid Sartiau believes her mother had a relationship with Juan Carlos that lasted into 1966, when she was born. It is yet another embarrassing episode for the father of King Felipe VI, who abdicated last year in a move aimed at restoring the Spanish monarchy’s popularity. The 78-year-old exking could be ordered to take a paternity test if there is sufficient evidence to back the woman’s case, according to a court spokesman.
A string of scandals had identified the royals as woefully out of touch, including a secret, luxury, elephant-hunting trip by Juan Carlos in Africa at the height of Spain’s economic crisis.
The abdication of Juan Carlos, who has had health problems and walks with a cane after multiple hip operations, also led to the loss of his judicial immunity. A palace spokesman
declined to comment on the case yesterday. The court rejected another paternity case brought against the former king by a 58-yearold Spanish man, Albert Sola, saying it did
not meet legal requirements. Sola has claimed for years that his birth mother, the daughter of a well-known Barcelona banker, may have had an affair with Juan Carlos before he married Queen Sofia. He and Sartiau made headlines in Spain in 2012 when they teamed up and underwent DNA tests which, they said, showed there was a 91% chance that they had one parent in common. Spanish lawmakers rushed through legislation after his abdication to prevent Juan Carlos being tried in ordinary courts. However, he can still be tried in the highest Spanish court, the Supreme Court. Although King Felipe consistently scores
highly in opinion polls, his family continue to draw unwelcome headlines. His sister, Cristina de Borbon, is set to stand trial on tax-fraud charges later this year. She will be the first member of the royal family to stand trial since the monarchy was restored in 1975. For decades, Juan Carlos was held in high esteem for steering Spain from military dictatorship to democracy. He took over the throne in 1975, two days after the death of long-time dictator Gen. Francisco Franco. But his reputation plummeted after he took a secret elephanthunting trip to Botswana in 2012 at the height of Spain’s financial crisis. He later apologised for the episode.
Jobs abound as P looks forward to MARIANO Rajoy believes his term of office as Spanish Prime Minister will end in glory after all his economic woes.
He predicts “fewer unemployed than at the start, and more people working than in 2012”, which would be a major achievement. On the 75th anniversary of the Agencia EFE, Spain’s International News Agency, Rajoy acknowledged that the economy was the most complicated issue during his last three years in government. The PM said he was forced to take “very tough decisions” which, fortunately, “many people” understood.
Rajoy said his main objective has been to resolve the unemployment issue, which, he said, “must continue to be the case in the future”. On a brighter note, he added that conversations were now about how many jobs will be created and not about how many will be lost, predicting boldly: “I expect that the number of National Insurance contributors in 2015 will grow by between 550,000 and 600,000. “It means that the 400,000 more in 2014, plus these 550,000 or 600,000 more, will amount to approximately one million more National Insurance contributors between 2014 and 2015.” And Rajoy is convinced that “the worst” of the crisis has been left behind, despite admit-
ting: “We still have many things to do.” He also insisted that the Government of Spain is maintaining its growth forecast of 2% for 2015, but he also said it was a “cautious forecast because the consensus among analysts and study services today puts this estimate at over 2%”. But despite the positive data and vibes, the Prime Minister said of the next term of office: “It will need to continue maintaining the policies that have shown themselves to work, and not change those policies and generate stability and confidence in the Spanish economy.” Not for the first time, he recognised the “great effort” made by the people of Spain in recent years. How-
ever, he stressed: “The great public services in our country have been maintained, and that was the main objective. “Pensions have not been frozen, unemployment benefits have been maintained, healthcare has been maintained and grants were increased by 20% last year. Spain’s PM said economy improvements had not yet filtered down to the micro-economy, but he feels the general public will see stronger ef-
fects from the recovery in 2015. Regarding a second tax reduction, Rajoy said it would take place in 2016 for Personal and Corporate Income Tax. “I will lower more taxes as soon as I can,” he pledged, recalling that an initial reduction has already taken place in 2015, the effects of which will be seen on January payslips. As for the early elections in Catalonia, the PM said: “They simply
demonstrate and reflect the failure of a certain policy, that has merely generated instability and uncertainty in Catalonia over the last few years.” He said the 27th September elections were being held “purely for party interests”. Rajoy denied they were a referendum election, saying: “They are elections to the Regional Parliament of Catalonia. There are no such things as referendum elections, and people should not be tricked into thinking they exist.” The Spanish Government chief also said: “The vast majority of people in Catalonia are not pro-independence, State participation in Catalonia has been highly effective, and this

Police probing a ‘kidnap’ attempt THE National Police are still investigating an alleged incident on Tuesday afternoon when, it is believed, two men in a van tried to grab a child in Miraverde.
The incident occurred on the street in the Miraverde urbanisation, which is halfway between Torviscas and Fanabe. It is understood that two adults were in a white van, which slowed and approached a child. The driver got out of the van and walked a couple of metres towards the child, only for the kid to become startled and run away.
PM Rajoy to glory has enabled the Regional Government of Catalonia to pay its suppliers and tackle its public deficit. “This is clear evidence that we have a national State that adopts a position of solidarity with all its citizens.” But despite the electoral calendar, Rajoy said: “I have no intention of making any more changes to the government because we are stable and fully capable of governing.” Rajoy also spoke about the so-called “social agenda of the Government of Spain”, saying: “There is nothing more social than employment - and employment policies are quintessentially social.” He added. “Pensions, healthcare and education will also be given
great importance. Furthermore, the Government of Spain will present a childhood plan, the elderly statute and a family support plan.” A number of decisions will also be taken concerning care for dependent family members. Rajoy recognised that the long, economic crisis has resulted in a “deterioration of the main traditional parties, and led to the emergence of political forces that were not previously found in the system”. However, he stressed that “traditionally-moderate forces always govern” in larger countries, with a higher level of well-being and wealth”. This is, he said, “the best way to tackle those problems”. Rajoy also said that many steps had been
taken to combat corruption and added: “There is no impunity. Many of the things now being examined in court are there because they were brought to light. “The rule of law is working, and that is a reason for us all to be proud, as a country.” On a completely different tack, Rajoy warmly welcomed an agreement reached with the PSOE party to combat Jihadi terrorism. “It is common sense and the right thing to do,” he said. “The fight against terrorism requires unity, co-operation and the daily adaptation of legislation to new circumstances as they emerge.” “Security is entirely compatible with the rights and freedoms of the people.”
He didn’t speak and didn’t chase after the child. The man is believed to be around 6ft tall with a slender build, and was wearing a longsleeved white shirt. His face was partially covered by a red scarf and a cap, which had two red stripes on the side. He was also wearing black sunglasses. The second man, in the passenger seat, is said to have been wearing a cap identical to that of his companion. He also had on a black scarf, red T-shirt and black trousers or jeans. Anyone with an information should contact the police, and parents are reminded to be extra vigilant.

San Sebastian bathing in Adeje’s adulation again! MORE than 15,000 people packed into La Caleta on Tuesday to celebrate the annual Feast Day of San Sebastián.
The Adeje population, plus numerous visitors, were out in force to pay homage to their co-patron with a programme of liturgical and cultural acts in San Sebastián church and the La Caleta square. People began arriving from early morning to ensure they were well placed to enjoy the celebrations, which started at midday with a sung Mass in honour of San Sebastian, performed by the Adeje Santa Úrsula parish choir.
This was followed by the traditional procession from the church, along the usual route to the La Emramada beach, where thousands of people awaited the bathing of the animals in the presence of the Saint’s image, carried on the shoulders of the faithful. Following the traditional dip and bless-
ing of the animals, which included goats, horses, cats, birds, donkeys and others, the Saint’s statue was carried back up to the plaza and the church. Given the numbers in attendance, there was, as usual, local police, civil protection and maritime units on stand-by at all times, and no untoward incidents were reported
during the event. This is a celebration dating back to the late 18th century, though it has changed somewhat over the years. San Sebastián is still revered by many locally and further afield, and on this special day they pray for his intercession or help in curing ailments. The festivities began on Monday with an openair exhibition, “San Sebastián, a tradition”, developed by Adeje Heritage Councillor Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz. There was also a “pinchos” (small skeweredtapas competition) enabling the public to savour one of these tasty tit-bits and a glass of wine or beer for just two euros, and to vote for their favourite dish. The fiestas comissiones group from Armeñime won with 60% of the vote.
Running alongside was a “Noche de Parrandas”, with small bands from local neighbourhoods playing folk music during the evening, before and after the religious celebrations. Delighted Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said: “The feast of San Sebastian celebration is a meeting point for coexistence and harmony for people who live here and who visit our borough. “We are delighted at the level of participation during the Festival. It lets us show the commitment we have to our traditions, too, as it is very much a relevant part of our history.” He added: “This is,
without doubt, one of the most important pilgrim events in this part of the Island, and we will continue to work to ensure that the tradition continues through future generations.” Cultural Councillor Nayra Medina Bethencourt said: “We are extremely happy at the numbers of people taking part, from our borough and from other parts of the Island. “This year, we saw more pets and horses than ever, and the devotion to San Sebastián invites a shared harmony. “Each year, more and more people become part of the tradition, honouring our Saint.” Photos: Sir Old Golfer

Fresh outlook to your paper IT’S always the small things you notice first. On Spanish TV, adverts for perfume and aftershave have been replaced with cough mixtures and magic flu remedies.
There have been a plethora of trailers for family movies and the sale season seems to have clicked up a gear. The mornings feel a little bit warmer and the days are certainly longer. How have we reached the end of January already? In the UK, it’s still the middle of winter and a January day feels the same as a February one. But that doesn’t apply here. The subtle little changes have continued here in the Canarian Weekly. Eagle-eyed readers will have noticed a few since Christmas, and it’s all part of our commitment to stay fresh and sharp. There have been some tweaks to our food section and next week, we will unveil a brand new
wine column. I’ve received some lovely comments about the new What’s On section, and this will be expanded to cover the Carnival season so you don’t miss a thing. This week we introduce the new Focus On feature which, over the coming months, will showcase different areas on the west and south coast of Tenerife. We have also rebooted our financial page. This issue we welcome Carol Schleisman to our roster of writers, and next week Laura Mann joins us. These new features complement a freshlooking TV Guide, an expanded Letters section and an extra page of sport. And it’s on this page that we find the wonderful news of our successful young rugby players. I know how hard they have trained to make their dreams a reality. These young lads worked tirelessly to get sponsorship and then, when the dream became reality, they showed just what they could do. The Ñandu lads are a credit to our island.

Dear Editor, Your recent correspondent Bob Adair’s experience of Candelaria Hospital could not be more different from that of my wheelchair-bound wife. On 6th December at around 11am, she was checked in there after being referred from the clinic in Valle San Lorenzo. Having driven her there, she informed the staff that I was her carer and that I was recovering from a stroke from seven weeks previously. Also, as well as caring for her, I was caring for her 91-year-old father, who has limited mobility, partial sight and deafness. As soon as she was shoved into a waiting area, I was ordered to go outside, complete with wheelchair, and wait. None of this cut any ice with the uncaring admin staff. She was put on a trolley in a corridor, along with several other patients, and, though she was desperate for a drink of water, I was not even allowed in to take her a bottle until 7pm. During the first day they took blood samples and did a few cursory checks on her. All this with not even a drink of water she had asked for many times. My wife spent the first of three days on that trolley in a waiting area which resembled the M25 on a bad day. On the second day, I arrived with some necessary supplies - and even then, I was ordered out by a nasty little man dressed in white in the reception area, even though, by now they had been informed of our situation and my own condition. It was not until 7pm again that I was permitted to see her. By this time, yet again, without even a drink of water and nothing to eat, she was still in the same place on that trolley. The third day was similar, still on that trolley which, she said, was like trying to sleep on an ironing board. I wasn’t permitted to see her. During all this time, there was no attention paid for her toilet needs, either. Throughout this episode, I was arriving home around 10pm to continue my caring duties for her dad, whom I had to leave to his own devices for around 12 hours every day. In the middle of the third night, my wife was eventually taken to the Green Hospital (Hospiten Sur) in Las Americas, where she was put into a real bed. The care and treatment there was far better than that she had received in Candelaria. Despite being wheelchair-bound, her mobility had been improving. But 12 days in bed, including her spell on the “ironing board”, has had a detrimental effect on her recovery. Following this experience I have decided that if, in the unfortunate event of ever being referred to Candelaria Hospital again, I will either let nature effect a cure or die - rather than go back to that dreadful place! Mike Byatt
Dear Editor I have been visiting Las Americas and Adeje for many enjoyable years, and it is with regret that I have to complain about a health and safety issue that needs to be addressed as soon as possible. Footpaths are made for pedestrians to walk along in safety, away from traffic, although mobility scooters are a necessity for people with walking difficulties. But the hirers are now renting them out to others who just want them for fun, speeding along the footpaths and causing danger to the public. Cyclists are also a danger on the footpaths, but the greatest safety concern is the rapidlyexpanding rental business of electric scooters. They are causing havoc on the footpaths, whizzing in and out past people as fast as they can go - some even blasting their horns, demanding that you get out of their way. I have experienced this on numerous occasions. Also, there does not appear to be any age barrier because I have seen children who look to be no more than six or seven years of age riding on these machines. I have made inquires about safety helmets and have been told that although they can be supplied, it is not compulsory to wear one when riding these scooters. I have never seen anyone wearing a helmet. That must place the person riding on these machines in great danger in the event of an accident. I assume that these machines are not allowed on the roads because of tax-insurance and safety reasons. So why should these machines be allowed on the footpaths? If the Tenerife authorities are to continue to allow these machines on the footpaths, they need to section off part of the footpaths with safety barriers to protect the public. In the meantime . What currently are the responsibilities of these rental companies? Who would a person claim off, if he/she were hit and injured by one of these machines? It’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously injured or even killed by one. Lastly, roads are for machines on wheels, while footpaths are for the public on foot. Dear Editor, I am writing about all the praise Adeje Council and Tourism are getting for all their good work in their area. What I would like to know is why they do nothing to protect and preserve the wonderful World Heritage reserve above La Caleta village, as you walk to El Puertito. Six years ago, there used to be signs that prohibited camping but, alas, they all disappeared. The area has now been taken over by hundreds of hippies, just camping wild. Most of them also have dogs, and there are no sanitary facilities in the area. You can barely get through on the cliff paths as these people have set up their makeshift camps all over the place, and it can be very intimidating to try walking past. What a shame this area is being neglected so much, especially with all the new developments planned for La Caleta. Maybe you could wake them up in Adeje about this before it becomes a disaster. Dear Editor,
I have just read the recent column in your paper referring to the new laws regarding changing driving licences etc, for Spanish. But there is one thing I notice, which has been missed from the column and is of great importance and also causes more confusion. Prior to the new ruling, people on social media sites who have been living in Spain/Tenerife for years, keep asking if they need to change their licence to a Spanish one. The fact is that regardless of where you live, you must inform DVLA of any address change ,or other circumstances affecting your ability to drive. And failure to do so can result in up to a 2,000-euro fine (it may have been lowered now to a lesser fine) for “failure to inform them of change”. So even before this new 2015 ruling, those who do not reside at a UK address and are registered as living abroad, must inform DVLA of new address to which DVLA will inform them that they do not issue licences with foreign addresses, they must register for a licence in the country of which they reside. It means that all non-residents of the UK living in Spain or otherwise, holding a valid UK driving licence, must inform DVLA of the address change. And, therefore, they must change it to a Spanish one if living in Spain as DVLA will not give them one. Any points or fines accrued are sent to the registered address, at which they no longer reside. They could be banned from driving without even knowing because they would, technically, be driving illegally with null and void insurance. It could be worth checking this out on the DVLA website and informing residents of this, also, and put the issue to bed. I’ve changed mine, so I’m happy.

Dear Editor I am fed up with dropping off family and friends at Reina Sofia airport to find that it is full of people waiting for pick-ups sometimes it is almost impossible to find a space! It seems an easy source of income for the gruas to monitor the situation and tow away these scrooges, who refuse to pay less than a euro to park in the car parks provided. John Lloyd, Callao Salvaje

Space-age Carnival has Gala warm-up THE Santa Cruz Carnival is just a matter of hours away, and on Wednesday night the inaugural Gala was held at the fairgrounds.
The 90-minute extravaganza set the stage for a month of festivities and featured the longawaited draw for the Carnival Queen, Princess and senior galas. The gala opening had a futuristic feel and in-
cluded the unveiling of a spaceship, which symbolises the theme of this year’s carnival which is ‘the future’. Dance troops were dressed up as inhabitants of the future aliens and Martians!
Jobless
down in 2014 It has been a solid, if unspectacular year for the Canaries’ economy, and the growth in income has been reflected in the jobs market.
Official figures reveal that unemployment fell in the Archipelago and on the mainland last year, with 23,100 extra people in work on the islands. In the Canaries, the number of households with all members unemployed is down to 159,600, and 4.8% more people were working. Youth unemployment fell by 3% in 2014, but the 51.8% mark is still unacceptable. The number of people in long-term unemployment fell by 7.1%, while the number of Social Security-affiliated for-
eigners grew by 1.5% last month to 77,421 in the Canaries. The Canary Islands’ jobless fell by 23,100 in the fourth quarter of last year, compared with the same period in 2013. That rounded the year off with a fall of 6.34% of unemployed, year on year. The National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported that the Canary Islands closed 2014 with 342,200 unemployed, amounting to 31% of the workforce jobless. The INE figures showed that the archipelago created 20,000 new jobs last year, and there are officially 758,700 people with jobs in the Canary Islands. This means the Canaries has the highest percentage increase in employment over the previous year - 4.81%, followed by the Valencian Community
(3.65% ) and Andalusia (2.71%). Nationally, Spain saw unemployment fall by 477,900 people in 2014 (down 8%) against the 2013 figure, and this is the second consecutive annual decline. Some 433,900 new jobs were created, which is the first increase since 2007, when there were 522,500 new positions. The year 2014 closed with 17,569,100 in work and 5,457,700 unemployed. That’s an unemployment rate of 23.7%, which is two points fewer than at the end of 2013. Of the 433,900 jobs created last year, 415,700 were in the private sector (+2.9%) and 18,100 in the public sector (+0.6%). The private-sector jobs rise is encouraging because 2014 was the first year to show an increase in actual positions since 2008.
Gala presenter Roberto Herrera joked: “I’m sorry, I seem to have parked the spaceship badly!” The main focus was on the order for the blue riband Carnival Queen gala, which takes place on 11th February. The names of the final 14 have been known for weeks, along with those of the designers, but Wednesday saw the official unveiling. The Carnival Queen candidates were warmly received by the Mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, who said: “It is an honour to have them all here and, with this simple act, it is telling us that the Carnival is here!” The Mayor congratulated the applicants and also thanked the sponsors. He oversaw the draw, together with Festival Councillor Fernando Ballesteros and the Gala’s Artistic Director, Juan Carlos
Armas. Yesenia Sanfiel, representing McDonalds and La Opinion newspaper, has the
honour of opening the contest, while Sara Diaz was drawn as the final contestant.

Edurne in tune for Eurovision contest POPULAR Spanish female artiste Edurne will represent her country at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna,
She has been chosen internally by Spanish TV with a fully-Spanish song called Amanecer, which means “dawn”. Edurne, whose partner is Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea.describes it as a high-quality pop song, which will be presented to the audience in the next few weeks. She has been singing all of her life, but her appearance in the limelight started a decade ago, when she was one of the finalists of the talent show Operación Triunfo in 2005. Edurne then embarked on a music career with Sony BMG Spain, releasing her self-titled, first studio album in 2006,which earned her a gold record. A year later saw the release of Edurne’s second studio album Ilusión and a third one, Première, in 2008. From 2007 to 2013, she played Sandy in the Spanish version of the musical Grease, releasing covers from
the soundtrack like Sigo Enamorada de Ti (Hopelessly Devoted To You) and Tú serás para mí (You’re The One That I Want). The release of Edurne’s fourth studio album, Nueva Piel, came in 2010 as she joined the cast of ¡Más Que Baile!, (Strictly Come Dancing), in which she was runner-up. Edurne released her fifth studio album, Climax, on 24th September 2013, from where her latest single so far, Painkiller, was released:

7/7 Widow stole son’s pay-out THE widow of a 7/7 bombing victim, who stole £43,000 from her son’s compensation after blowing her own £¼m hand-out, has been jailed for 32 months. Louise Gray, whose accountant husband Richard Gray was one of 52 people killed in the 2005 London bombings as he commuted to work, spent £250,000 of her own compensation before turning to her son Adam’s fund. Ipswich Crown Court heard that the 42-yearold, from Ipswich, is said to have frittered away the money on cars, clothes and luxury holidays. She admitted stealing £43,000 between July 2012 and November 2013, at an earlier hearing. Judge David Goodin told Gray: “The offence you have committed
against your son, the trust you betrayed - a second hammer blow following the death of his father - is so serious it can only be met by a custodial sentence.” The judge added: “The theft of £43,000 is one thing. The theft of £43,000 by a parent from a young adult’s trust is quite another, when that sum represented most - practically all the compensation he received for his father’s tragic death. It’s an act of wickedness almost beyond belief. He has lost not one parent, but two.” Adam was 11 when his father was killed by suicide bomber Shehzad Tanweer on a Circle Line underground train. The children’s money was placed in trust until their 18th birthdays, but Adam gave his cash
to his mother to look after when he turned 18. When he arranged to meet her in November 2013 to ask for the money because he was looking to buy a property, she confessed that she’d spent it, the court was told. Adam took civil action to try to recover the cash, and his mother was ordered by a county court judge to repay him the £43,000. He also reported the matter to police, who prosecuted her for theft. The court heard that Gray had offered to pay her son £10,000 followed by further monthly payments, but he rejected the offer. Gray was supported in court by her partner, Umar Shamshoom, who is the father of her three-year-old daughter.

The Pope’s record six-million crowd! AN astounding six million worshippers are believed to have attended the final Mass of Pope Francis at the end of his five-day visit to the Philippines.
It took place in Manila’s Rizal Park and was the largest-ever papal gathering, despite constant rain, surpassing the five million attracted to a John Paul II Mass at the same venue in 1995. The Pope arrived at Rizal Park in a “Popemobile”, based on the design of a jeepney - a popular form of transport in the Philippines. He was wearing the same yellow, plastic, rain poncho handed out to everyone during his visit to typhoon-hit
Earlier, the Pope drew an estimated 200,000 people to Manila’s Catholic university, where he came close to tears while hearing two rescued street children speak of the hardship they had faced. By the time the gates to Rizal Park opened, the roads leading to it were mostly closed. Many people camped outside the entrance the night before to make sure they got in. But the government
Tacloban on Saturday. The 78-year-old German Pope waved and smiled at the cheering crowds lining the route taken by his motorcade to the park. And his vehicle stopped repeatedly, enabling him to lean over barriers and kiss babies.
Philippine authorities mounted one of their most intense security operations, deploying some 40,000 soldiers and police. Acting National Chief Leonardo Espina told reporters: “This is a sea of faith we are dealing with.”
warned the elderly, pregnant women and children against attending. The Pope’s visit to the Philippines followed two days in Sri Lanka, where his visit to Tacloban had to be cut short because of looming stormy weather. And there was drama at the airport when a plane carrying VIPs connected to the papal visit was blown off a runway as it prepared to take off, shortly after the Pope’s aircraft departed. It was the Pope’s second trip to Asia in five months, reflecting its growing importance to the Catholic Church with support dwindling in Europe and the US. It was also the fourth papal visit to the Philippines, where 80% of the population are Catholics.
Uber chief pledges Europe jobs galore
THE boss of online taxisharing firm Uber believes his company can create thousands of jobs in Europe this year. Travis Kalanick told a Munich conference that Uber could open the way for 50,000 jobs as part of a “new partnership” with European cities. Uber, a rapidly-expanding firm, has been criticised across the world by regulators and established taxi operators. But Mr Kalanick’s comments were seen as an attempt to build bridges with critics. Uber, which helps users summon taxi-like services on their smartphones, started four years ago and now operates in 250 cities worldwide. The San Francisco start-up is valued at £25.5bn, based on the latest fund-raising from investors. But critics have accused Uber of flouting competition rules, and of failing to carry out sufficient safety checks on drivers and their vehicles. Uber
has been hit with court injunctions in Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain, and has faced protests from taxi firms in major cities, including London. And a woman in India, allegedly raped by an Uber taxi driver, is suing the company in the US courts. Some of Uber criticisms have provoked a combative response from the company, with Mr Kalanick a frequent critic of the red-tape and regulation which, he says, cities use to protect the interests of entrenched taxi firms. But he told the DLD conference for the media and tech industry: “Uber is committed to establishing new partnerships with Europe’s cities to ensure innovation, harness powerful economic benefits and promote core city functions.” He acknowledged the need for rules and safety checks for drivers, saying it had been “easy to say something flippantly-
negative about every law” in the past. The Uber chief said his company is working with governments on new rules to ensure public safety is protected, choice and competition thrive and economic growth and tax revenue rise. He added that Uber is developing new technology tools which improve safety and do background checks, and “improve communication” with local officials and law enforcement. And he added that city authorities which free up Uber’s service would see the creation of thousands of jobs and higher tax revenues. “At the end of 2015, if we can make these partnerships happen, we create 50,000 new EU jobs,” said Mr Kalanick. “Uber wants to partner closely with tax authorities to increase transportation providers’ compliance and overall tax revenue for cities and countries across Europe.”

‘Tackle terror’ campaign plea F E D E R I C A Mogherini, the EU’s foreign policy chief, has called for a broad alliance to tackle terror, including Muslim nations.
She told a Brussels summit of EU foreign ministers on Monday that there must be more co-operation both with Muslim countries and, internally, within the EU. Ms Mogherini said the EU would appoint security officials in “relevant countries”, and it would also raise its Arabic-language capacity to improve communications. The summit followed in the wake of the Paris atrocities, which killed 17 people. Two of the Paris gunmen, who were eventually shot dead, said they were “avenging” French cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. Anti-terror raids in Belgium, France and Germany, which led to more than 20 arrests, were also carried out. The first Charlie Hebdo issue published after staff at the French satirical magazine were massacred carried a new cartoon of the Prophet on its cover, sparking angry protests in parts of the Muslim world. It has led to a special leaders’ summit on terrorism, to be held on 12th February. Without revealing details, Ms Mogherini told a news conference there would be specific antiterrorist “projects” with Turkey, Egypt, Yemen and other states. But the EU will step up intelligence-sharing, both internally and with countries affected by terrorism, and increase its work to prevent funding for terrorist networks. The European Parliament, she added, would be asked to work on legislation covering the sharing of airline-passenger data. Outlining specific measures resulting from Monday’s meeting, Ms Mogherini said the
new attaches would be tasked with developing “security and anti-terror co-operation”. On the language initiative, she said: “I want, immediately, to improve our communication with the Arab-speaking populations, both within the EU and in the world. “We need to improve our capacity to speak Arabic, to write in Arabic and to listen to the messages that are coming from the Arab world.” Arab League Secretary General Nabil alArabi, who attended the talks alongside the 28 EU foreign ministers, said: “Every country in the world is suffering from terrorism. “It is not just a military or security issue - it covers the intellectual, cultural, media and religious spheres.” Before the talks began, UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said Muslim countries had “suffered the greatest burden of terrorism”. In other developments as the ministers were meeting, an estimated 350,000 people rallied in Grozny, capital of Russia’s mainly-Muslim region of Chechnya, to protest against Charlie Hebdo. And in Gaza City, Palestinian group Hamas allowed a demonstration against the magazine by Salafists, at which a French flag was burnt. But a planned rally by Germany’s “anti-Islamisation” Pegida group was cancelled after police received a threat against one of the organisers. Hundreds attended an anti-Islam rally in the Czech capital of Prague, and a march took place
in the Danish capital of Copenhagen. EU interior ministers were discussing their response to the terrorist threat when they gathered in Riga yesterday (Thursday). On the same day, members of the US-led coalition against Islamic State met in London, with American Secretary of State John Kerry in attendance. Belgian police killed two suspected jihadists in the town of Verviers last Thursday, and five people arrested were said to be “participating in the activities of a terrorist group”. As security heightened across Europe, several people were also arrested in Greece capital Athens on Saturday. Belgium is asking Greece to extradite one of the suspects over a possible link with the alleged Belgian plot. Belgian police are still searching for Abdelhamid Abaaoud, the alleged leader of the cell suspected of planning to kill Belgian police officers. But no link has been established between the Belgian case and the Paris attacks, which drew international outrage. It sparked a huge anti-terrorism rally in Paris, attended by many world leaders, including UK Prime Minister David Cameron. The EU is to appeal against a European court ruling last month that it must remove Hamas from its list of terrorist organisations. As a result, Hamas will remain on the list and its assets will stay frozen, pending a judgement by the Court of Justice, the highest legal authority.

Street shock as veteran actress Anne dies at 60 ANNE Kirkbride, much-loved as Coronation Street character Deirdre Barlow in the world’s longest-running TVsoap, died on Monday at the age of 60.
The actress, who was in the show for 42 years, passed away peacefully in a Manchester hospital after a short illness. Her husband, David Beckett, and the programme’s cast and crew were “heartbroken and deeply saddened”. There has been an outpouring of grief from Street fans, and co-star William Roache, who played her husband Ken Barlow for many years, said: “I feel Anne’s loss so personally, having worked closely with her for over 40 years. “She was such a loving and vibrant person. You always knew she was there because her laugh was never far away. “She was an impeccable performer with superb comedy timing and an immense gift for really-heightened drama. “We had some rows over the years as Ken
and Deirdre, and it was wonderful to play those scenes opposite her. “Coronation Street has lost one of its iconic characters, and Anne will be greatly missed.” In the Eighties, one of the soap’s most famous storylines hinged on whether she would stay with Ken Barlow. She was married four times in the programme, twice to Ken. The popularity of her character was demonstrated when a real-life campaign was launched to free Deirdre when a storyline saw the character jailed in 1998 after being duped into a mortgage fraud by fiancé Jon Lindsay. The campaign was even backed by Prime Minister Tony Blair. Anne started her Coronation Street life in 1972 as Deirdre Hunt and, over the years, became known for her character’s large glasses and husky voice. Deirdre Barlow had currently been offscreen after Anne, at her own request, had been given a threemonth break by the show’s producers. Coronation Street creator Tony Warren said: “Anne was very easy to love. Her talent over the years made a
massive contribution to Coronation Street.” Kate Ford, who plays Deirdre’s fiery, outspoken daughter Tracy Barlow, tweeted: “Heartbroken at the loss of my friend and
beautiful on-screen mummy. The most crazy, funny 100% human. My life was enriched by her.” Ken Farrington, who played Billy Walker in the Street for more
than 20 years, told BBC News: “It’s absolutely devastating. I’m still a bit shocked. She had just tremendous fun and talent.” Coronation Street executive producer
Kieran Roberts said: “There are no words to describe the sense of grief we feel at Anne’s passing. “We know only too acutely how much Anne meant to the millions of people who watched her create the legendary character of Deirdre Barlow. “She will be greatly missed by the Coronation Street team, who share happy memories of working with her. “We feel blessed and honoured to have known her. Our thoughts are with David and their family.” Peter Fincham, ITV director of television said: “Anne has been a truly loyal servant to Coronation Street since joining the programme in the early Seventies. “She created a unique and unforgettable character in Deirdre Barlow, and she’ll be greatly missed on and off the screen. “Our sincerest condolences to Anne’s husband David and her family at this very sad time.” It seems ironic that her death coincides exactly with this week’s cull of actors in the Street, stemming from a mini-bus crash on Monday in an on-going story.
Kenny Rogers tribute act, Mitch, dies at 61 THIS week, the Entertainment community have been mourning the passing of Mitch Mitchell. He had been battling prostate cancer, but passed away just a few weeks after his mother died.
Born in Wales, Alan Henry Mitchell was known as Henry Boy there, Alan in West Midlands and Mitch over here! As a child, he sang in the church choir before joining the Army when
he was 15. But his mum bought him out after six weeks as he couldn’t do the discipline! He was drawn to his first love of singing and, from a young age, he performed at clubs on nights off and weekends, to supplement the pay from his ‘regular’ work. After an enjoyable holiday in Tenerife and going home to weeks of endless rain, Mitch promised his family he would move to Tenerife if he were ever made redundant - it happened the following year! Maybe it was fate. So 12 years ago he took the plunge working with Cy Benson initially before taking on the compere job at Harlequins.
This led to him establishing a Freddie Mercury show, which made his name on the Island. In recent years, Mitch morphed into Kenny Rogers, wowing a new audience with his smooth vocals. Mitch, 61, died from prostate cancer, but if it had been diagnosed early enough, he could have been cured. His widow Joy said: “I miss him more than words can say. I urge every man to have regular testing - it is a tiny blood sample that doesn’t hurt, and it could save so much suffering.” Along with Joy, Mitch is survived by his daughters Melanie and stepsons, Richie and David.

Old folk’s farewell to winter fuel payments THE British Government will save almost £17 million a year after scrapping winter fuel payments to nearly 100,000 expat pensioners living in warmer countries - including Tenerife and mainland Spain.
Payments worth £200300 annually have also been halted for Brits living in countries like France, Greece and Portugal. Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith said countries in which the annual average temperature is higher than the UK’s warmest region (5.6C) will be affected. Mr Duncan Smith said: “The huge increase in UK winter fuel pay-
ments, made to people living in European countries, equates to a near doubling in costs to the British taxpayer, and follows a ridiculous ruling by the European Court of Justice. “The winter fuel payment is intended to help British pensioners with heating costs. “From winter 2015/16, we are changing the rules so that it no longer goes to people in European countries with an average winter temperature higher than the warmest part of the UK.” Britain’s biggest population of expats is in Spain, where nearly 50,000 expats benefit from temperatures in December and January of up to 17C - and even higher in Tenerife. Those over 60 were receiving £200 while the over-80s reaped £300, costing taxpay-
ers £8.85m a year. Prime Minister David Cameron pledged to protect pensioners’ benefits until 2015 after much controversy surrounding the issue. Winter fuel payments
issued to expats soared by 70% after a ruling by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in 2012. The highest EU court ruled that pensioners of any nationality could claim them if they had
“sufficient links” to Britain. Some £21.4m was paid out in 2012-13 to more than 115,000 claimants - nearly double the £12.8m handed out the year before the ruling. It
included £8.8m to those in Spain and £5.1m to expats in France. Mr Duncan Smith said: “Winter fuel payments exist to help Britain’s pensioners keep themselves warm. It’s absurd and offensive that taxpayers are funding these payments for people who have retired to the Mediterranean and enjoy warm weather. “The European Union has frustrated our attempts to address this issue in the past, but with our new temperature-based eligibility criteria, we’re able to satisfy EU rules as well as prevent this obscene waste of taxpayers’ money.” But Matthew Sinclair, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “Decisions over who is eligible for the payment should be taken by those we elect, and not unaccountable judges in Luxembourg.”

The world’s wealthiest! Oxfam believes that the richest 1% on the planet - some 80 billionaires - will actually own more than half the world’s wealth within two years.
The anti-poverty charity’s research shows that on current trends, the wealth of the chosen few increased from 44% in 2009 to 48% last year. The research coincides with the start of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The annual gathering attracts top political and business leaders from around the globe. Winnie Byanyima, the Oxfam executive director who is co-chairing the event, is using the charity’s high-profile role at the forum to demand urgent action to narrow the gap between rich and poor. Before the gathering, Ms Byanyima described the scale of global inequality as “simply staggering”. She added: “It is time our leaders took on the powerful vested interests that stand in the way of a fairer and more prosperous world. “Business as usual for the elite isn’t a costfree option - failure to tackle inequality will set the fight against
poverty back decades. “The poor are hurt twice by rising inequality. -They get a smaller share of the economic pie and, because extreme inequality hurts
growth, there is less pie to be shared around.” Oxfam based its prediction on data from the annual Credit Suisse Global Wealth datebook, which gives the
distribution of global wealth going back to 2000. It uses the value of an individual’s financial and non-financial assets, mainly property
The X Files on way back?
FBI agents Mulder and Scully could be resuming their search for the truth as The X Files prepares for a TV comeback.
After spending nine years solving supernatural mysteries, TV executives have fingers-crossed for a 10th series. Fox TV Group chairman Gary Newman has confirmed that his network is in talks to bring back David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. And he’s “hopeful” the cult drama will feature on the small screen again. But it seems they need to find when Du-
chovny and Anderson have gaps in their busy schedules. Fox chairman Dana Walden said: “Conversations so far have only been logistical and are in very early stages.”.
And he added that the series would go forward only if creator Chris Carter, Anderson, and Duchvony were all on board The two FBI special agents solved many su-
pernatural phenomena mysteries before the show ended in 2002. The X Files also spawned two spin-off films; Resist Or Serve in 2004 and I Want To Believe four years later.
and land, minus their debts to determine what individuals “own”. But the data excludes wages or income. Anthony Reuben, BBC head of statistics, said that to be part of the wealthiest 1% of the world’s population, an individual would need to be worth just over half-a-million pounds. He added: “So it is not necessarily talking about people who own yachts and ski chalets. Owning an average house in London (without a mortgage) would just about put you in the 1%.” He also said Oxfam had chosen to use figures which showed the disparity between the 1% and the rest of the world in the worst light. “From 2000 until 2009, the proportion of wealth held by the wealthiest 1% fell every year. From 2010 until 2014 it rose every year,” he said. “Oxfam has taken the figures since 2010 and used them to extrapolate what will happen in the coming years.
Clearly, that is the methodology that will make inequality look the most severe.• Oxfam is calling on governments to adopt a seven-point plan to tackle inequality, including a clampdown on tax evasion by companies, and a move towards a living wage for all workers. The charity made headlines at Davos last year with the revelation that the 85 richest people on the planet had the same wealth as the poorest 50% (3.5 billion people). It said the comparison had now become even more stark, with the 80 richest people having the same wealth as the poorest 50%. But Oxfam’s claim that by 2016 the richest 1% could own as much or the same as the bottom 99%, is not wildly implausible. There are all sorts of reasons why such increases in inequality are troubling, and not just for those at the bottom of the income and wealth pyramid. One is that aspirational people on lower incomes have massive incentives to take on too-great debts to support their living standards, which exacerbates the propensity of the economy to swing from boom to financial-crisis bust. Another is that the poor, in aggregate, spend more than the rich (there are only so many motor cars and yachts a billionaire can own, so much of the super-rich’s wealth sits idle. as it were), and therefore growth tends to be faster when income is more evenly distributed. The charity said the research, published on Monday, showed that 52% of global wealth not owned by the richest 1% is owned by those in the richest 20%. The remaining population accounts for just 5.5% of global wealth, and their average wealth was £2,544 per adult in 2014. Banking giant Credit Suisse were in agreement with Oxfam last October, verifying that the richest 1% of people own nearly half of the world’s wealth.

FOR some people, there comes a time when their home in the sunshine is no longer a viable option. This can be through health or financial issues, or simply a desire to be closer to family - perhaps new grandchildren or elderly parents.
Once the property has been sold, many owners repatriating funds back to the UK don’t realise they could, potentially, lose thousands of pounds in fees and the exchange rate. Sending money back to your home country can be a simple process, but owners could be affected by a whole range of hidden charges
23rd January -29th January 2015
A smart move to repatriate funds if they’re not careful. Whether you’re selling your primary or secondary property, Spanish banks usually charge substantial sums to transfer euros out of Spain. What’s more, in comparison with a year ago, property owners who transferred euros out of Spain to the UK would have benefited from a weak pound - gaining more pounds from their euros. Now, though, as the pound has strengthened against the euro, it’s crucial to consider other ways to save money on your overseas money transfers, ensuring you get the best return for your money. While many people may have used a currency company to buy their property in the first place, some forget that this is also the best
option when selling and returning funds to their home country. Know your options Currency experts will provide a more personalised service than the banks. They will take time to understand your situation, and find the product and service
most suitable for you. A good company will watch the market and let you know when the rate is in your favour. Alternatively, it can fix an exchange rate if you wanted to take advantage of today’s rate, but make the transfer in the future.
A limit order, for instance, would be an ideal product to use to repatriate your funds if the exchange rate isn’t in your favour at the moment, and you’re not happy to convert your euros to sterling. A currency expert will agree a target exchange rate with you and, once the market hits this exchange rate, he/she will automatically process the transfer at your desired rate. Alternatively, you may choose to use a forward contract when repatriating your funds. If you are committed to selling a property, confident you will be able to sell it soon, but concerned that the exchange rates will fluctuate, then you can lock an exchange rate through a forward contact. It is the currency world’s version of “buy
now, pay later”. Just leave a small deposit to fix today’s exchange rate and it’s yours, guaranteed for up to a year. This secures you against market fluctuations, ensuring you know exactly how much you’ll receive. Living the simple life Arranging to return to the UK can be stressful enough, not to mention expensive. That’s why it’s so important to have all the help you can when moving back, especially if the exchange rate isn’t in your favour. A foreign exchange specialist will talk you through your options and together, you can decide what is best for you. At least if the money side is under control, you can concentrate on planning your return, and look forward to it with pleasure!

Churchill: 100 Days That Saved Britain
Don't Miss...
Sunday 25th January 2015, ITV1, 22.20 “As I went to bed at about 3am I was conscious of a profound sense of relief. I felt as if I were walking with destiny and that all my past life had been but a preparation for this hour and for this trial.” - Sir Winston Churchill This new partly-dramatised programme for ITV, which marks the 50th anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill’s death, reveals how he overcame his demons to inspire Britain to repel German forces during his first three months as Prime Minister. Churchill: 100 Days That Saved Britain brings to life letters, diaries, speeches and personal testimony to depict the months of May, June and July 1940. This was a period when France was collapsing, the Nazis had the Allies on the run, the British Army was being defeated at Dunkirk, and - at any moment - Britain faced invasion by Hitler’s troops. The story is brought to life by actors including Robert Hardy (as Winston Churchill), Jemma Redgrave (as his wife Clementine), Phil Davis (as Churchill’s physican Charles McMoran Wilson) and Edwin Thomas (as civil servant Sir John Colville), while the programme is narrated by Nigel Anthony. Their words are woven with archive footage to portray how in two battles, three months and four great speeches Churchill convinced Britain to continue fighting in the Second World War.

Food and Drink BBC2, 20:30
Chef and pub landlord Tom Kerridge plays host to some of the best cooks in a series highlighting all that is excellent in food and drink. This edition is all about the unsung heroes of the British larder. Tom is joined by Irish chef Richard Corrigan, who is passionate about offal - a relatively unloved ingredient in Britain. Richard tries to persuade Tom that kidneys are worth the effort, while Tom cooks an often overlooked fish - hake - which he pairs with a button mushroom sauce. Drinks expert Joe Wadsack brings a German red wine to the table, and Arabella Weir gets the inside track on how a good kitchen knife should last a lifetime.

The Supermarine Spitfire was Britain’s most successful fighter plane and remains an iconic symbol of Britain’s resistance during the Second World War. In May 1940, while covering the retreat from Dunkirk, a Mark 1 Spitfire flown by RAF ace Squadron Leader Geoffrey Stephenson was shot down and crash-landed on a beach in northern France, where it slowly sank into the sand. The wreckage was finally recovered in the 1980s and stored anonymously in France for more than 20 years. In this special documentary, Guy Martin joins a restoration team as it embarks on a two-year rebuild of this Spitfire.

Mr Selfridge ITV1, 21.00
1918 – Harry and his family are gathered for the funeral of his beloved wife Rose. As they say their tearful last goodbyes, a grief-stricken Harry wonders how he will ever get by without her. Nine months later. Harry has a wedding to attend! Harry’s eldest daughter, Rosalie, is to marry renowned Russian aviator Serge de Bolotoff. At the church, a thronging crowd has gathered to see the arrival of the guests. At the forefront of the lavish event is Russian émigré Princess Marie, the extravagant and glamorous mother of the groom. As Agnes watches on from the pews she is surprised to find Henri next to her, recently returned from War. She is overcome and they are delighted to be reunited. After a waiting through a long War, they want to be married as soon as possible. Whilst Crabb worries about the financial implications of hosting the wedding, the reception gets into full swing on Selfridge’s Oxford Street Roof Terrace. But Serge is drunk, flirting with female guests and pressurising Harry to invest his aerodrome enterprise – which Harry isn’t keen to do. Harry is worried: is this marriage good for the Selfridge family? Meanwhile, we learn that Miss Mardle is on a special leave of absence from the store after a life-changing event. Head of Cosmetics Kitty Edwards and writer Frank Edwards are now happily married, but are stuck KIitty’s younger sister, Connie, living with them. Trouble is afoot when Harry’s nemesis Lord Loxley arrives back in town – probing Miles Edgerton about Harry’s latest fortunes, debts, credits and business interests… Victor Colleano is now the proud owner of his own nightclub, Colleano’s, but the right punters aren’t coming in. To boot, Victor is paying 10% of his takings to Inspector Purkiss in return for the police turning a blind eye to the sale of alcohol out of legal hours. At the store, soldiers who’ve returned from war have found their jobs taken by women. Women and men are struggling to cooperate. Mr Grove thinks the women should be let go, but Harry is insistent they are not; they remind him of Rose. But George tells Mr Grove that he’s found it hard to settle since returning from France, and hands in his notice. George decides to go and work for his old mate Victor, where they can look out for each other. Rumours of Harry’s involvement in financing Serge’s aerodrome have spurred Loxley into action. He whisks Serge away on his wedding morning, introducing himself as a legitimate potential financier for his aerodrome project. Abandoned before her wedding breakfast, an upset Rosalie comes to the store and tells Harry, who decides to have them come live with him. He can keep an eye on things that way. Princess Marie tells Harry she will return to her own flat, but checks into an expensive hotel suite instead - charging it to Harry. She’s homeless, and hiding it. Newcomer Nancy Webb comes to Selfridge’s and demands a meeting with Harry. Armed with plans for a housing estate for former War servicemen, Nancy is planning to use the same piece of land in Acton Serge has earmarked for his aerodrome. She implores Harry not to buy this land; rumours of his interest are pushing the price up. She’s worried she’ll lose her backer, Lord Meadowes – and leaves Harry with food for thought. He remembers how Rose had a similar housing project in Chicago…

Celebrity Alex Reid checks in to the Cavendish after entertainments manager Mark Jenkins decides it’s time for a major shake-up at the downat-heel hotel. Mark’s latest idea is to harness the power of the pink pound by bringing Torquay’s Gay Pride to the Cav. ‘At my old hotel I hosted Pride and I made a fortune’ Mark says. This time, to guarantee a crowd, he ropes in his old friend Alison to book in a headlining celebrity. But with just two hours to go before the launch of Mark’s most ambitious event yet, Alison still hasn’t nailed a big name. ‘If we don’t get a celebrity today it won’t be Pride, it will be Shame - mine. Have you asked everyone on the list?’ nags Mark.

The world’s biggest car programme returns for an explosive and extra-long run of brand-new programmes. In this first episode of the series, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are in Russia for an incredible race across the vast and very beautiful urban landscape of St Petersburg. May defends the honour of the car in a very small Renault, Hammond tries to prove that pedalling is faster by saddling up a bicycle, while Clarkson attempts to demonstrate that water is the quickest way across town, especially if you’re in a hovercraft. To make matters more complicated, all three presenters are racing not only each other but also The Stig, who is silently making his way towards the finish line on public transport. Also in this episode, Richard Hammond is at the test track to find out if the dramatic new Lamborghini Huracan is as flamboyant and fun as an Italian supercar should be.

David Starkey’s Magna Carta
23rd January -29th January 2015
M onday
BBC2, 21.00
We take our liberties for granted; they seem absolute and untouchable. But they are the result of a series of violent struggles fought over 800 years, which at times have threatened to tear society apart. On the frontline was a document originally inked on animal skin: Magna Carta. Distinguished constitutional historian David Starkey looks at the origins of the Great Charter in 1215, designed to check the abuses of King John - and how it nearly died at birth. He explores its subsequent deployment, its contribution to making everyone – even the monarch – subject to the rule of law, and how this quintessentially English document migrated to the North American colonies and eventually became the foundation of the US constitution. Magna Carta has become a universal symbol of individual freedom against the tyranny of the state, so with ever-tightening government control on our lives, is it time to resurrect it?

Richard Wilson follows the Shell Guides, first published in the 1930s, to explore the British countryside by car. Today, he follows the 1968 guide to Essex and discovers a very different place to the latter day flashy stereotypical image of the county. He visits the historic town of Colchester to see an archaeological dig on the high street, and travels to Mersea Island where he goes oyster fishing on a boat. He then follows the controversial recommendation from the guide to visit the new town of Harlow, and the rather more predictable recommendation of the Jacobean palace, Audley End.

Bad Builders Bang To Rights
23rd January -29th January 2015
T uesday
ITV1, 20.00
In this new three-part TV series consumer champion Dominic Littlewood confronts bad builders, meets the people whose lives have been ruined by dodgy contractors and helps rebuild and repair their homes. The majority of tradesmen are hardworking and reputable but for people unlucky enough to hire a bad builder the effects can be utterly devastating. In the first programme, Dominic meets pensioner Betty Hall and her son Trevor, whose house resembles a building site. He confronts one of the builders responsible for the substandard work and exposes a roofing company whose lifetime guarantee would not last a season. Eighty-four-year old Betty was widowed seven years ago. At the time her son Trevor was dealing with the breakdown of his marriage so they decided to move in together. Looking for a new start they found a ramshackle house in the country, which they could extend and fix up, and employed a local building firm to do the work. The plan was to add two new bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, install a brand new kitchen, lounge, dining room and central heating. They paid £111,000 but after 11 months, work had almost ground to a halt and Trevor and Betty were forced to sack the builders and pay out another £20,000 to try to make the house liveable. Since then, the mother and son have had to live in terrible conditions with no central heating, no kitchen and exposed electrics. Trevor and Betty have spent most of the year sleeping on settees in the living room and using a camping stove to cook. Trevor says: “We actually have had to put approximately £22,500 on credit cards in order to finish sealing the house. Mum can not survive through another winter.” But help is at hand and Dominic along with builder Chris and designer Pippa surprise Betty and Trevor with the news that they are going to fix their home. They enlist the help of friends and neighbours and set about transforming the house in just two weeks. Meanwhile Dominic wants answers from the builders responsible for leaving the house in such terrible conditions. He begins to investigate and finds that the company involved had two directors when the work was carried out. Dominic goes to confront one of the builders hoping to get an explanation for the shoddy work. Also in the programme, Dominic exposes a roofing company whose working practices fall short of acceptable standards. The company have been getting lots of complaints so Dominic rigs up hidden cameras on a terraced house in Lancashire to catch them red-handed. After witnessing sloppy and dangerous work through the secret filming, Dominic decides to confront the company boss. Back at Betty and Trevor’s house, Chris, Pippa and the team have transformed their building site into the home they have been dreaming of with fully fitted kitchen, dining room, central heating and finished bedrooms so the pair no longer have to sleep in the living room.

Churchill: A Nation’s Farewell BBC1, 21.00
On the 50th anniversary of Winston Churchill’s death Jeremy Paxman tells the story of the magnificent send-off which Britain gave to the man who led the country to victory in the Second World War. More than a million people came to line the streets of London on the freezing day in late January to pay their respects, as his coffin was taken from the lying-in-state at Westminster to St Paul’s Cathedral; millions more watched the State Funeral on television.Churchill was the only commoner in the 20th century to receive the honour of such a magnificent ceremony. In the one-off BBC One programme Jeremy explores whether Churchill’s immense legacy still has relevance today, and he meets a wide range of people who were involved in the events of that day, from soldiers who bore the coffin, to members of Churchill’s close family. He hears from Boris Johnson, author of a new book on Churchill, and from a London docker who remembers how some dockworkers had misgivings about saluting the passing coffin with their cranes as it passed down the Thames on a launch - one of the most memorable moments of that extraordinary day. The funeral ended at the village churchyard of Bladon, where Churchill was laid to rest alongside his father Randolph. At the close of the film Jeremy Paxman reflects that no statesman has come close to rivalling Winston Churchill in the half a century since our nation mourned his passing.

Attenborough’s Birds of Paradise
23rd January -29th January 2015
T hursday
BBC2, 20.00
Birds of Paradise are one of David Attenborough’s a lifelong passions. He was the first to film many of their beautiful and often bizarre displays and has spent a life time tracking them all over the jungles of New Guinea/Indonesia. He says: “For me Birds of Paradise are the most romantic and glamorous birds in the world. And this is a film I have wanted to make for 40 years.” In this very personal film he uncovers the remarkable story of how these ‘birds from paradise’ have captivated explorers, naturalists, artists, filmmakers and even royalty. He explores the myths surrounding their discovery 500 years ago, the latest extraordinary behaviour captured on camera, and reveals the scientific truth behind their beauty; the evolution of their spectacular appearance has in fact been driven by sex. And in a final contemporary twist to this story of obsession and royalty, he travels to the desert of Qatar, to a state-of-the-art facility which houses the largest breeding group of these birds in the world: a Sheikh’s very own private collection. There he has his closest ever encounter with a Greater Bird of Paradise and its dramatic display, one he first witnessed in the forests of New Guinea more than 50 years ago.

Modern Times: The Vikings Are Coming The world is in the grip of a sperm donor revolution - and Denmark is at the epicentre, supplying sperm to 70 countries worldwide. Directed by awardwining filmmaker Sue Bourne, this film tells the remarkable stories of five British women who have chosen to use Viking sperm to create the family of their dreams. There is great demand for Danish sperm, because unlike in the UK, donors can remain anonymous. But the biggest demand comes from single women in their 30s and 40s and from gay, female couples. The options for insemination are plentiful – they can fly themselves out to a clinic in Denmark or they can simply log onto the Danish donor websites from home, scroll through pictures to choose their donor, buy the desired sperm and have it shipped in frozen canisters to their local clinic - or even to their kitchen table. With the global sperm trade transforming traditional family life, this film follows the emotional journey of each woman as they struggle to achieve their dream of motherhood.

Next up is a trip to Arbor Low, nestled in the Peak District, a family home owned by Steve and Nikki Dick that is run with a no-frills ethos. Gregg Wallace and award-winning greengrocer Chris Bavin, with the help of dietician Lucy Jones, are on a mission to help families across the UK save money, sort food facts from food fiction and eat well for less. Gregg and Chris have their work cut out for them with the Booth family in Lancashire. Mum Jenny claims to always shop with a list and tries to be cautious. Dad Howerd’s impulsive purchases mean that the food bill mounts up. They want to save £40 a week on food to afford a much-needed home extension. Gregg and Chris get to work, secretly watching the Booths in the supermarket as they pile their trolley high, no lists or meal plans in sight. After the Booths get a reality check about how much they are actually spending, all of their food labels are removed and some of their favourite products are swapped to see if they really like their brands as much as they think they do.

Entertainment
23rd January - 29th January 2015
EVOLUTION is what makes us human - literally! We grow, we evolve and become smarter and stronger. Evolution is in everything we do, from government to technology, and it is the reason we dictate the future of the planet. We are the allpowerful human race because we learn and progress. One area in which it is most obvious, perhaps, is music. Every modern genre of music is simply an evolved sound, originating from decades ago and altered through the course of time. This is necessary because people grow bored quickly; what was a No.1 album a week ago can be yesterday’s news two weeks later. To be successful in any walk of musical life, you have to keep things fresh and diverse. In 2015, some might say the Tenerife entertainment scene needs an injection of fresh ideas to maintain its previous success. And a dose of innovation has come in the form of Lucas Alexander. The 22-year-old Welshman from Newport arrived in Tenerife just before the end of last year. I met him at his first gig in Las Americas and he was on just before me, showcasing his music. Unfortunately, Lucas had an issue with his guitar and asked to borrow mine. I obliged, of course, and plugged it in. As I walked away from the stage and waited for his first song, I recall thinking: “Here we go, another bedroom musician who thinks he can make a buck.” I could not have been more wrong! Lucas is a highly-qualified, skilled singer and guitarist, but Tenerife has an abundance of great singer/guitarists. So what makes Lucas different? The Eagles, Pink Floyd, Status Quo, Eric Clapton, Bryan Adams, Queen … the list goes on. These are bands and artists who, no doubt, shaped musical history. They have been covered in tribute shows
Evolving… into a new Ed! over here for more than three decades and I wonder whether it’s time for change. Lucas started out playing a variety of music when he first arrived, But I know he also writes his own stuff, which is admirable. He soon learned, though, that Tenerife loves a tribute show, and so the Lucas Alexander tribute to Ed Sheeran was born.
It is one thing to choose an artist whose music you feel you can imitate and do justice to, but to pick, arguably the “hottest” artist in the world right now, is both ambitious and brave. It is an audacious decision I applaud and envy. Lucas doesn´t shy away from Ed´s technical and difficult live abilities, either, but embraces them. Like the artist himself, Lucas uses multiple microphones, a loop pedal, beat-boxing and more to create incredible live sounds, mimicking to a really high standard the music of Britain´s top, modern-day musician. Ed Sheeran is a shining beacon. He casts light on the shadows of generic pop and has brought back tasteful song-writing and lyrics into the mainstream. In 2010, before his arrival in the charts with his No.1 hit The A Team, the charts seemed doomed, awash with Simon Cowell´s puppets and their brand of “non-mu-
sic”. Since then, Sheeran has proved he is not a one-trick pony and has gone on to write some iconic love songs - and funky musical masterpieces as well! It is artistes like Ed Sheeran that I want to hear more of when I’m out listening to live music in Tenerife. Give me Sam Smith, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Katy Perry, but where are these tribute shows? I’m not asking everyone to love the music they produce, but we need that diversity over here if we are to evolve. It is time for Tenerife to embrace what is new. There is space among the established artists and tribute shows over here for the new kids on the block, and they should be made to feel welcome. Don´t for one moment, though, think that this article is an “out with the old, in with new” piece. No! It is my wish that the Tenerife music scene I grew up with and love so dearly remains competitive and does not become complacent or stagnant in its success. Music from all ages and areas will always play a vital role in entertaining the Island’s tourists and residents. People should be inspired when they see acts like Lucas and look to try the same thing, but not necessarily modern chart stuff. Recently, Academy award-winner Clint Eastwood brought to the screens of cinemas around the world, the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, perhaps better known as Jersey Boys. The show has been a massive hit on Broadway and in theatres globally for a long time. But the release of the movie has enhanced its success, and one man who has taken the op-
portunity to create an exciting, adventurous new show because of it is Pip Brown. I´m sure at least 90% of the people reading this will know the name Pip Brown. When I first encountered Pip, he was performing a tribute to the fabulous Michael Bublè. At the time, if I remember correctly, there was only one other Bublè show and Pip quite simply dominated. Now, though, as we see more and more Bublé shows appearing, Pip has utilised his inventive, avant-garde way of thinking and is now performing as one half
of The Tenerife Jersey Boys. Luke Carey and Pip spent weeks, if not
37 CW
months, in rehearsals, and the show made its debut around Christmas time. It was an instant success and received excellent reviews. The Jersey Boys’ music is the quintessential sound of the Sixties, proving you don´t have to be doing modern chart songs to be current in your show. Frankie Valli had a notoriously high range and falsetto and, as a group, the Four Seasons were famous for flawless harmonies and, generally, producing memorable songs. Luke and Pip have captured the magic of the stage musical and blockbuster film sensation wonderfully. They are now playing their role as part of the locomotive that keeps Tenerife´s musical wheels turning. They are ensuring we never get stuck in any musical rut and will always continue to evolve.

It’s the best chippy of all! ONE of the toughest annual food competitions in Britain has crowned its champion - but you might have to travel one heck of a distance to taste the product.
The 2015 National Fish & Chip Awards, organised by Seafish (the country’s authority on seafood), took place on Tuesday at the Lancaster London Hotel in London. And leading the top10 finalists, selected by industry judges, was Frankie’s Fish & Chip shop in Brae, Shetland, Scotland. The chippies, representing their respective areas in the UK, were put through a rigorous, multi-stage judging process during the last few months.
They then went up against each other in a “Dragon’s Den-style” pitch as they fought to batter their way to the top. Valerie Johnson, owner of Frankie’s Fish & Chips, said: “This is the highlight of my working life. I can’t thank Seafish and my brilliant
team enough - 2015 is Frankie’s year.” The final places were short-listed during earlier rounds, which included unannounced shop visits from experts. They were assessed on a wide variety of judging criteria, including product quality, sustainable sourcing policies, mar-
keting initiatives and customer service. Coming in at a respectable 2nd and 3rd place were Simpsons Fish & Chips in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, and Papa’s Barn, in Ditton, Kent. Paul Williams, Chief Executive of Seafish, said: “Frankie’s Fish & Chips stood out throughout the judging process.” The National Fish & Chip Awards, now in their 27th year, are recognised as one of the most prominent seafood industry events in the UK. And the good news for Frankie’s and owner Valerie is that previous winners have reported sales increases of up to 100%, and with fish and chips - once the only takeaway food - seemingly regarded as small fry these days, that is a astonishing achievement

Dorada gets the Carnival spirit... SANTA CRUZ this weekend kicks off the Carnival season in Tenerife, and Dorada is again getting involved.
Five years ago, the drinks company became an official sponsor and brought out special-label brands to commemorate event. This year they have produced another limited-edition bottle, and this one will also be sold outside the Canary Islands. This bottle, like some of those in 2014, is also
aluminium, depicting scenes based on the Carnaval’s ‘future’ theme. And it goes under the moniker of El Boncho de las Galaxias. A total of 113,500 aluminium bottles, in a number of designs, will be distributed in supermarkets, bars and cafes around the archipelago, with some also being exported. One special bottle depicts a bearded Carnival Princess, “Jennifer”, walking through the streets shouting, “Let the party be with you”, while another depicts the ‘space police’ partying!

By Val Sainsbury THE price of life-saving vaccines has rocketed, leaving some countries struggling to immunise children fully.
A report by the Medecins Sans Frontieres charity says there has been a 68-fold increase in prices between 2001 and 2014. It accuses the pharmaceutical industry of over-charging and has highlighted cases where rich western countries are getting a better rate than poor ones. But the industry has countered, saying its pricing reflects the cost of manufacture. The medical charity’s report says prices are now “prohibitively high” and are “calling into
23rd January -29th January 2015
Vaccine costs are ‘too high’
question the sustainability of immunisation programmes”. The document, “The Right Shot”, says the number of vaccines offered has doubled since 2001, but the price has increased even more. In 2001, it cost 44 pence to vaccinate against tuberculosis, measles, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough and polio. Since then, the vaccines for rubella, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenza type b, pneumococcal diseases, rotavirus and the human papillomavirus (HPV) have been added to vaccination programmes. But the cost has leapt to £30.07 per child. Rohit Malpani, from MSF, said: “The price to fully vaccinate a child is 68 times more expensive than it was just over a
decade ago, mainly because a handful of big pharmaceutical companies are overcharging donors. They are also developing countries for vaccines which already earn them billions of dollars in wealthy countries.” The organisation highlighted the cost of the relatively-new pneumococcal vaccine which, it says, accounts for 45% of the total cost of vaccinating a child in the poorest countries. Mr Malpani says there needs to be greater transparency about the costs involved in producing the vaccines. The report also cites one instance of hospitals in Morocco being charged more for a dose of the vaccine than those in France. “We think it’s time for GSK and Pfizer to do
their part to make vaccines more affordable for countries in the long term, because the discounts the companies are offering today are just not good enough,” added Mr Malpani. Now, MSF is calling on the two pharmaceutical companies to cut the vaccine price to £3.30 per child. The poorest countries have their immunisation programmes supported by the Gavi vaccine alliance. The MSF report warns that the middle-income countries are not benefiting from vaccines. However, it adds that progress means many countries are about to lose Gavi support. It will happen to Angola within the next year, and the country’s vaccine bill is expected to increase by 1,500%.
In a statement, Pfizer said it was “proud” of its vaccination commitments around the world. “The price of Prevenar 13 (the pneumococcal vaccine),” says the company, reflects the fact that it is one of the most complex biologic products ever developed and manufactured. “For example, each one of the 13 individual components requires a separate process for purification, conjugation and testing. “It takes more than two years to create one batch of Prevenar 13, encompassing some 500 separate qualitycontrol tests prior to product release and distribution, multiple facilities and hundreds of trained professionals.”
GSK added: “Around 80% of all of GSK’s vaccines, including our pneumococcal vaccine, are provided to developing countries at a substantial discount to western prices. “Our pneumococcal vaccine is one of the most complex we’ve ever manufactured, essentially combining 10 vaccines in one. “For Gavi-eligible countries, we are providing this vaccine at a deeplydiscounted price. At this level, we are able to just cover our costs. “To discount it further would threaten our ability to supply it to these countries in the long-term. Nevertheless, we continue to look at ways to reduce production costs, and any savings we make would be passed on to Gavi.”
Blood test could help smokers stub ‘em out A SIMPLE blood test could help smokers pick their own strategy to give them the best chance of quitting.
Studies in an issue of the Lancet journal show as many as 60% of people start smoking again within a week of quitting the weed. But researchers argue that measuring how quickly a person breaks down nicotine could boost the chances of success. Other experts
say the cost-effectiveness of these extra tests would need to be assessed. Nicotine is one of the most addictive cigarette substances, and smokers crave more when their body levels drop, prompting them to smoke again. But different people break down nicotine at different rates. Some scientists suggest people who break it down more quickly may crave more cigarettes and, in turn, find it harder to quit. In a new study, researchers from Ameri-
ca’s University of Pennsylvania enlisted some 1,240 people on different smoking cessation programmes. They checked each volunteer’s blood to see if nicotine was broken down at a normal or slow rate. They were given either a nicotine patch, a drug called varenicline or treatment with a dummy pill. Varenicline is a nonnicotine-based drug available on prescription. Doctors balance potential side-effects - including the risk of depression and suicide - against the harms of continued smoking. And everyone in the trial had access to behavioural counselling. Nicotine replacement can be in the form of patches and sprays, and scientists found people who broke down nicotine at a normal rate had a better chance of quitting while using varenicline than those using the patches. Though volunteers who broke nicotine down more slowly had similar success rates with whatever method they used, they
reported more sideeffects with the varenicline. Prof Caryn Lerman, one of the lead researchers, said: “If these tests are used, people could have a sizeable chance of success. For some people, with normal metabolism of nicotine, the chance of success might be low on the patches. But it could double if they take the pill. “But for a third of the population with slower breakdown, cheaper patches might be best.” Blood tests to check
for nicotine breakdown speed are currently used in research, but scientists say they could be easily developed for much wider use. Prof Neil Davies, from the University of Bristol, provided an independent comment, saying: “The results are an important scientific advance. “If the findings can be replicated, they could lead to changes in practice. But there are still questions that need to be answered. The costeffectiveness of these tests would need to be
taken into account.” Another professor, Robert West, from University College London, who was not involved in this paper, said: “We know that if people try to quit unaided, their chance of success for a year is about 4%. “The way to succeed is to keep trying. It is like rolling a dice. If you keep rolling it you will succeed. But if you stop rolling, you will fail.” The University of Pennsylvania research was published in the Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal.

HAIR
Golden oldies lead the grey power troops By Ruth Benson I HAVE previously highlighted how the fashion industry has been changing the way clothes, in particular, are marketed.
There has been an increase in realistic models, as well as mannequins, but what seems to be popular is the “grey power”. The industry has seen the need to aim at the older market. We know we have an ageing population, but they are also the ones with the disposable income. In the past, fashion was depicted by age and stereotypes, older women with blue rinses, slippers and a Marks and Spencer’s frock. Now, though, fashion is no longer ageist and there is a belief that a woman in her seventies can wear something seen on a girl of 20, so there are no longer distinctive boundaries. High-end French fashion brand Celine have novelist Joan Didion heading their campaign - and she is 80! Dolce and Gabbana, known for using young models, have recently used three older women dressed in black, clasping the must-have D & G bag.
Older celebrities are also seeing the popularity of grey power, with 71-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell in Yves Saint Laurent’s campaign, and cosmetic companies such as Garnier with Helen Mirren. Retail group Selfridges have capitalised on the ageing population and have changed their Bright Young Things showcase, which introduces new designers to the industry to Bright Old Things, which celebrates the creativity of women in their fifties up to their eighties. Using older models is not that new, but the trend is increasing, most recently with campaigns by Marks and Spencer’s and models such as Twiggy. The campaign again does not segregate the old and the young, but entwines the two, and all age ranges are seen as classic and stylish. Older men have always been seen in a dif-
ferent light. Grey hair is distinguished - just look at George Clooney - and they are always depicted as a James Bond-type, sophisticated and suave. This is now the way women are being depicted, with them having the best years of their lives, and the older generation being the ones having all the fun. Yet a survey conducted at the end of last year in how the fashion industry caters for mature British women concluded that they felt the high street did not cater for the 50plus market. Women taking part in the survey felt they were not represented well in advertising. One positive point was that women felt more at ease with themselves as they got older, not only in their personal lives but in body shape, with a feeling of self-worth and being comfortable in their own shoes. So it seems that with age, we may not have the figures we aimed for in our youth, but we have an acceptance of who we are. And with that, the fashion industry can find a profitable group who know what they want and are in position to buy it. I am sure that, with the increasing population, we will only see more of grey power.

ANGELS!
JUST as in the world of fashion, out come this year’s must-have looks in the world of hairdressing as Spring draws nearer.
Not all styles come and go, and some stay around eternally, like the classic bob shapes, which all stand the test of time. This year sees a return to the ever-stylish Seventies, the era of Charlie’s Angels and Saturday Night Fever. Oh my God! I hear you cry. But fashions all come back around and there’s nothing new - just a different twist. As I’ve been harping on for the last year about chucking out your hair-irons and going for smooth blowdries instead, the Seventies come rolling back as if it were yesterday again. In this era, hair was “done”. There was no leaving the house with it scraped back because you had to be seen to have made an effort. Okay, I’m not talking about your everyday look. But it’s time to practise those blowdries and dig out those rollers once more. Big, big hair will be right on trend this year, and even if your hair is one length, it will be seen to be fuller - no flatness. no styles that drag your face down. Body and bounce will be the
key words. So how will you get that look? Well, start off with layering. On any length, the key to fullness is layering not too short on the top section, but plenty of movement at the sides and back. Chopping into these layers will give you added fullness, and no blunt cutting, either. It has to look whispy to give the hair a more lighter look. As for colouring, we are again sticking with block colouring. That’s one solid colour, or a fine mix of tones. No chunks or slices if you’re going to pull this look off. Simple is better, and if you are going for blondes, then stick to warmer shades - nothing too ashy. If it’s darker you’re after, warm browns or copper browns look the best.
The Seventies were all about hair softness and femininity. Think Farrah Fawcett meets 2015! I’m not trying to tell you that this is “the” look to go for. If you were there first time around, you probably won’t want to do it again. As with fashion, it’s a bit scary to see that what you once wore is back on the rails. We can all take a piece of what’s in at the moment and adapt it to suit ourselves, and there’s nothing to stop you from giving it a try, whatever your age. So dig out your Carmen rollers and get practising those blow-waves. After all, if you are going to be wearing the fashion this year, you’d better have fabulous hair to match.

By Monica Dyson MY mother went to the same hairdressers in Sheffield every week for the best part of 30 years, if not longer.
She had a shampoo and set, every few months a perm and occasionally a rinse. Her hair was always set on rollers and she sat under the hairdryer, reading the latest magazines and enjoying a cup of tea. She didn’t really do much with her hair in between visits. Somehow, women of her age seemed a bit clueless when it came to hairstyling, so she liked a good strong set so that her hair would “keep in” until she returned the following week. As she started to get much older and not too good on her feet, she decided to change hairdressers to one near her home. This was not without a great deal of soulsearching and sleepless nights as she wondered just how to break the news to the proprietor, who was one of the doyens of the hairdressing scene then. Eventually, she rang the shop and explained the situation. The owner simply said, “Okay”, put the phone down and that was that. Customer relations at its finest! It wasn’t surprising that she had been a loyal customer for so long. Once women had found a hairdresser they could trust, and an environment in which they felt comfortable, it was a hard-to-break habit, and it’s still the case. There was none of the snootiness they thought would be prevalent in the big-name hairdress-

Marcel Wave gave us women freedom
ers in town, and it was an important part of weekly socialising in your area. Your hairdresser was a bit like the priest in the confessional box. You entrusted him/ her with many of your most private secrets or thoughts. The older woman was often the bread and butter of local hairdressers, visiting more often than younger women, although the other women would wash their own hair more often, sometimes every day. There were always special rates for pensioners then, on certain days at least, so it was affordable. That doesn’t really seem to happen very much now. Perhaps pensioners are better off today than they used to be! One of the important dates in a woman’s calendar has to be her
Christmas hairdo. Civilisation as we know it would definitely crumble if we didn’t have our hair done, sometime leading up to Christmas. In fact, from the queues forming on Christmas Eve outside barber shops, it seems that men aren’t immune from the notion that they have to look their best for the festive season. My local hairdressers, Marcel Wave, really
embraced the spirit of the festive season, the staff dressing up as “Oompa Loompas” and the premises decorated beautifully. They are already planning next year’s costumes, which, I understand may well be celestial. Following an ageold tradition of giving hair salons interesting names, this salon was named after Francois Marcel, the inventor in 1872 of the stylish wave given to hair by means
of heated curling irons. His invention remained in vogue for over 50 years, together with his permanentwave machine, which revolutionised hair care for women. One of the biggest changes over the decades has been the hairstyles. You can define an era by how a woman’s hair is styled. Just look at any of the “Bullseye” re-runs and you’ll see what I mean! During the Fifties, after
years of war-time austerity, women discovered hairdressers big time. Hair was teased, styled, sculpted and sprayed to create curls, waves and bouffant, often to copy popular stars of the day like Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor and Doris Day, although the short, gamine look made fashionable by Audrey Hepburn also started to emerge. Women wore head scarves to protect their hairdos against the wind and rain, with some actually wearing rollers under the scarves in preparation for a night out. By the Sixties, when women were pursuing careers and also further education, they opted for easier-to-manage hairstyles, with hairdressers like Vidal Sassoon being to hair what Mary Quant was to fashion. In fact, he invented the “Mary Quant cut” a geometric, five-point bob worn by the fashion designer, which was a complete contrast to the romantic, curly looks of the Fifties. The Seventies saw a return to long hair, feminine and free, as worn by stars like Farrah Fawcett, through to the Eighties’ styles, influenced by TV programmes like Dallas and comprising curly perms. Then came a return to shorter styles when New Wave music became vogue. Today, almost anything goes, but it is good to see that most young women are opting for long, natural-looking hair again. My age group? You can still see older women sporting the short, cropped styles they’ve had for years. And yes, many of them are in Tenerife! But thankfully, most of us discovered the bob and straightening tongs. And as for hairdressers ... if you find a good one, as I have, stick with it. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

Accion del Sol News
Heartbreak of puppy litter WE start this week’s news with a distressing story of four puppies, who were put in a plastic bag and dumped in a bin.
Just one of the poor mites survived, and her three brothers were already dead when the bag was retrieved. These horrific examples of pet cruelty are, sadly. still very much part of our day-to-day running of the refuge. We also have the usual influx of unwanted dogs and puppies, given as Christmas presents. So if you are thinking of adopting a dog, please visit us. We are also in desperate need of towels, sheets, blankets, puppy milk, leads, collars and dog toys. If you can help in any way, please contact us on the number below Pictures of delight Our next fund-raising event will be at the refuge on 9th May, and the
theme is spring flowers, pets and children. Please take a photo of your pet or child with flowers and submit it to teneriffa@aktiontier. org where they will be printed out and displayed. The three best winning pictures will be awarded prizes at the spring event - and you can submit as many pictures as you like. We need your help Please call 922778630 for more information, or if you would like to help out in any way. Maybe you have some spare time and would like to walk some of the many refuge dogs, which would be much appreciated by our four-legged friends. Arona spot-checks Arona Town Hall has been conducting spotchecks in various areas, ensuring dogs have all the legal required paperwork and that owners are picking up their dogs’ mess. So please be aware
and extra careful to make sure you do not incur a large fine by failing to meet the legal requirements of being a dog-owner here.
Where to find us The refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological
park where the windmills are. Opening times We are open to the public Monday, Tuesday,Thursday, Fri-
day between 2-5pm and Saturdays from 1-4pm . The refuge is closed Wednesdays, Sundays and on public holidays.

SINCE last June, Tráfico has been dealing with its paperwork by prior appointment only.
The system was started here and in the Balearics, which means that all 66 Tráfico offices now deal with everyone booking an appointment. It was actually tried and tested in Madrid and Barcelona. And it also affects La Gomera and El Hierro, who do not have Tráfico Offices. Appointments can be made via www.dgt.es or the Tráfico website or via telephone on 060. If the appointment is made online, you have the option to choose the date and time, up to 15 days in advance. The system has been working well in other Tráfico offices, saving time and preventing

the offices getting busy at certain peak periods. It also helps the staff know what the required procedure is for each individual. The online appointment system is easy to use and is more suitable
than the telephone system because you cannot choose a time or date over the phone - this first available appointment is given. To access the appointment system, go to Tráfico’s website www.dgt.
es and click on the icon that says CITA PREVIA (appointment). The icon also shows a computer and a telephone. From there, you will need to choose the option SOLICTIAR CITA PREVIA EN JEFATU-
RAS (request appointment in the office) at the bottom of the page. The next step is to choose the correct office, which is in Santa Cruz. After that, you must select what area you wish to make the appointment with: either fines or “other”. The “other” option covers drivers’ licences and car paperwork. Once you have selected the area, fill in your personal details and choose the date and time you wish to go appointments can be made up to 15 days in advance. Once the appointment has been reserved, you will be given the option to either save or print a confirmation. You can also modify or cancel any appointments online, but only two appointments can be made in any one day for any individual or representative. Registered
professional businesses remain unaffected by the changes in law. Cash cannot now be paid in Tráfico. You have to obtain a paper at the window and pay at the bank. You may, however, still pay by card at the window. The introduction of the appointment system does not change the processes or documentation required for each individual process. The main change is that it should make a trip to Tráfico quicker, provided you take the correct paperwork. Otherwise, an alternative appointment for another day will have to be made. In the past, you could collect what you were missing, then pop back in and complete the paperwork the same day. If you have any questions, just send me an email to emma@motor worldtenerife.com

Half-term report By Roscoe
CD Tenerife 0 Numancia 0 I COULD write a match report for this game on the back of a stamp and have room for the Queen’s head! Thankfully I have a reduced column this week. Otherwise I would have to print the dictionary to fill the space.
It was that boring and dull. Let’s say someone has recorded it and is selling it as a cure for insomnia. In a game of no chances, there were some positives. The defence played well and our new keeper, Dani Hernandez, kept a clean sheet. Away from the non-action, it has been another
frustrating week in the quest to sign reinforcements. Another couple of strikers said No, but, as I write, there looks to be some better news. Juan Carlos Real Ruiz, 24, was a target in the summer, but he wanted a crack at La Liga with Deportivo. It has not worked out for him and reports from Galicia suggest a deal is as good as done. He’s what we now call a No.10 which, in effect, means a non-scoring striker. He hit the back of the net just once in a loan spell at Huesca two seasons ago, while last year he managed three goals only in Deportivo’s promotionwinning season. That said, he does have something about him. At 6ft, he can hold the ball up and he has a decent touch. We wish him well. Last weekend’s point means Tenerife are 15th at the halfway point of the season. The position and points are similar to last season, and
it’s hard to make a clear case for where we are. Last season, there was the sight of watching Ayoze scaring defenders to enjoy as Tenerife went on a promotion run. There is not the same sort of buzz this year, but it can be argued that the side are more balanced. The defence has been fixed, we have some local lads improving nicely and the team can only go one way. There should be no relegation worries, but there is also the sense that this will not be a play-off-chasing season either. But this league is strange, and sides can climb or drop from nowhere. Las Palmas lead the way, but I would wager anyone that Real Betis will win this league. Sporting Gijon have lost just the one match (and that was last weekend), while Valladolid are in striking distance. They have a historical blueprint for getting out of this league, and they
will surely be right in the mix in June. Nobody has scored fewer goals than Tenerife this season, and only Position
Diego Ifran has scored since the end of October. But if we can start putting the ball in the on-
ion bag, then it could be a fun second half of the season. But an injury to Ifran … let’s not go there!

New-boys Ñandu are tops already! TENERIFE’S new Ñandu rugby club made it to Barcelona for their first weekend of matches, and the results were amazing. Despite playing in their first-ever competitive games, the youngsters were absolutely top drawer and will be a force to be reckoned with. All their hours of training fell in to place the minute the ref blew the whistle, and the results speak for themselves. The hospitality of the Catalan Rugby League was second to none,
and their President, Inganci Planas, presented Ñandu’s captain with a plaque commemorating their entry into the League - the first Canarian Team ever to achieve the feat. Their two fantastic re-
sults mean, for the moment, Ñandu are top of the League, and they are now training hard to maintain that position. Now they have experienced competitive rugby first-hand, they know what they are up
against and can work to improve their performances. As for their back-to back matches - the only possible way they can compete in the league because of travel costs - the youth team really were outstanding.
But none of this would be possible without the help and support of their current sponsors, although they still have a long way to go. Ñandu have four further double-match trips ahead, and they’re
looking for more help if this incredible journey is to continue as they have started. If you can help in any way, please phone 664 361 086 or email nandu rugbytenerife@gmail. com
Ñandu 33 GeiEG 12 AFTER a long, tiring journey, starting with a 4am meet in Adeje, Ñandu were faced with weather conditions previously unknown to the youngsters. But they made a fast start, going ahead with a try by Jose Manuel Patiño Gil (Chema) after five minutes, which
set the tone for the rest of the match. Further tries were scored by Reece Lynch, Gabriel Trujillo Mendez, and Facundo Patsouris Belcoure (2), with tries converted by Chema and Jacob Oakenfold. The manner in which they played demonstrated their ability
to put in to play their many hours of training. The scrum was a strong part of the game, with Josh Vaughan’s hooking skills providing an excellent platform to support the team. And the referee commended Ñandu for their technical prowess throughout the match.
UE Santboiana 0 Ñandu 49 ÑANDU, faced with a team from Spain’s most prestigious rugby club, showed a steely tenacity and dominated their second game from start to finish. With nine tries and two conversions -some players adding to their
tally from the previous day - debut points came from Gregorio Prieto Garcia, Gabriel Cordoba Garcia and Mateo Emanuel Paolin. The team’s composure never failed, their calm, collected positivity shining through.
The back three, Ryan Cox, Toby DenholmSmith and Mel Tena Deharbe, received constant support from the dominant pack providing Daniel Coronado Perez and Fran Daniel Ferreyra with attacking opportunities.

The Palms look handy! WITH just four matches left for the top pair in Division 2, and just four points separating them, a big win for either team could really put some pressure on. And a big win is exactly what The Palms dished up as they thumped Barracuda Hunters 7-1. In fact, by the time Waterfall play again, The Palms will probably be top. Who will hold their nerve? Third-placed Chipeque just about fell over the line, taking the last rubber to beat Marilyns, while Palms Sports Bar did likewise to squeeze past Ourplace Playgirls. Phoenix Flights held a 5-1 lead at one stage, only to lose the last two points to give the Spear
Chuckers a more respectable scoreline. Last week¡s Division 1 fixtures kicked off with
the Playboys and Trap Door sitting level at the top. Maybe the nerves are getting to one or
two already as we enter the home straight with seven games remaining. The Playboys put six past Picassos, while Trap Door won the trebles to beat Pas O Nadas, which opened up a one-point gap. I can’t see either team slipping up in their next few fixtures, so it could all boil down to their penultimate match, when the Playboys travel to Trap Door. The date? Friday, 13th March! The Shamrocks at last produced some of their early-season style to whitewash Summerlands, and Emerald Lounge were in fine form at Naughty Nautas, pickng up a useful six points.
Bar 180 A, seemingly cruising to the Premier League title, calmly swatted away a plucky Vikings Ensecan without too much fuss. Down at the bottom, the Boothen boys had cause to celebrate as they notched up their first win - a 5-3 success against Bar 180 B. Over in Los Cristianos, a solid performance and some clinical finishing helped Phoenix Bar to a 7-1 victory at Target Titans. The chicken and chips were top notch as well! Teams not involved can put their feet up this week as the John Lowe Team Handicap competition heads into the quarter-finals. And there are some tasty-looking ties, es-
pecially in the Trophy, where two Premier League teams face some hefty head starts for the opposition. None more so than Spear Chuckers’ 390-pointer at Phoenix Bar. Gulp! Good luck to everyone. Lynn leads the ladies charge JUST as we settle back into Premier League action, the next round of the FA Cup is upon us before we know it. So there is no action this week in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League. But last week was a high point-scoring week - if you had the right players in your team! If not, maybe it is time to think about playing a wild card and bring them in. Chelsea are top of the league with a five-point
cushion, and last week they beat Swansea at a canter. As a result, the boys in blue had three players in the leading point-scoring team of the week. Arsenal had two players in after their great victory against Man City, and Palace matched that after coming from behind to beat Burnley. The rest of the team comprised players from West Brom, Everton, Southampton and West Ham.
There was no change at the top of the league, so our old-age pensioner Stephen Snook, with his Kingsmead Krunchers, remain out in front, opening the gap to 13 points. Could this be his big push for the title, or will he be hauled back? The league team of the week was a closerun thing, and at one stage it looked as though the honour would go to Roscoe. But a late charge saw Lynn Stringer and her
Family Ties team pip him by a point with a total of 83. She was helped with high-scoring weeks from Ivanovic, Costa, Downing and Eriksen. Roscoe scored 82 and his team was more or less the same, but he had Carzola highscoring instead of Downing. Unfortunately, his high-scoring week did not improve his position in the Oasis Fm Towers battle. Chris Elkington is still lead-
ing, but only just as Adi Benson is three points behind him. John Zammit still holds third spot, 70 points adrift,
while Roscoe moved on to 944 points - 144 points behind! He needs a few more weeks like this one.

Top division is two-horse race IT was business as usual on Tuesday night as the league action resumed in the Direct Telecom Pool League.
And unless Gaffers A or Tenerife Hammers A suffer a spectacular collapse, the rest of the teams in Division 1 are chasing third spot. The Phoenix, current occupants, picked up another win in a close game against Terrace Bar B down on Amarilla Golf. It was neck-and-neck throughout, but Phoenix got their noses in front at 6-5 going into the final game. Terrace Bar’s Greer, who had been playing well, had a good chance to clinch a draw, but he played a nightmare shot he will want to forget. This enabled Phoenix to wrap it up. Inn the Pink A, pressing and chasing them, ensured they stayed within touching distance with victory over Palms A and, effectively, ending their opponents’ chances of a top-three finish. Pink A flew out of the blocks and were 4-0 in barely 20 minutes. Twice, the Palms broke and had to sit back while the hosts banged in the balls. Palms got competitive in the second set, but in this league it’s hard to come back from such a deficit. With John on his holidays, Ricky was in
charge for the Pink and he led from the front with three fine wins. Treehouse A slipped back after losing at Palms B. It was another close game with nothing to choose between either side. But Shai and his team made home advantage count to take all three points, which moved them above their A team! The Palms battle could get tasty over the next few months. Waterfall Rebels looked a promising team at the start of the season, but didn’t gel in the opening games. But they have found their form at last and are moving nicely up the table. This week they were away against Hammers C, and if they were expecting an easy ride, it didn’t come. The home team pushed them all the way and the Rebels really had to fight for the win, which eventually came 7-5. Dreamers A are just in front of the Rebels in the table and they welcomed Terrace Bar A to Los Cristianos. Games between these two are always close affairs, but Terrace played some good pool and kept getting their noses in front, with Con winning three games. But Dreamers’ Tommy matched him and, after a spirited fightback from the home team who were 6-4 down, the points were eventually shared. In the night’s final

They made the trip to Silencio to face Exiles B, Blair and his team putting up a fight. But Gaffers were always in control, taking the game 8-4 and extending their lead at the top to six points. The pressure is now on defending champions Tenerife Hammers A to win their game in hand. Division 2 is not so much as a two-horse race as Division 1, with Sporting Jester A nine points in front and not easing up. Hoppy’s Bar played host to them but, despite their valiant effort, the league
leaders were comfortable winners, adding another three points to their impressive tally. Bluebell A currently hold second spot, but Waterfall Jokers are hot on their heels, and this week they faced each other at the Waterfall Bar. The home team settled into their stride and never really had to break sweat before emerging 8-4 winners, which puts them a point behind their rivals with a game in hand. Could we see the Jester’s and the Joker’s promoted? James Place are still in with a chance of promotion as well, and they kept their season going with a routine win over Dreamers B, taking the points comfortably. They are nicely poised, just three points off second and again with a game in hand. Next Door took on Picasso’s and, in terms of location and league position, they are more or less next door. Unfortunately, Next Door couldn’t make the home advantage count and in a close game, Picasso’s just came out

Matches to be played on Tuesday 10th Feb 2015 on top to extend the points gap between them to five, in favour of the latter. In the final game of the night, league newcomers The Crown are still searching for their first point. They had a good go last week at putting a Division 1 side out of the cup, but couldn’t replicate that form at Treehouse B. The home team were never troubled, despite a good effort from the Valle San Lorenzo team, and the win moved them up a place in the league. The draw has been made for the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup second round, and there
are some juicy ties. With most top-flight sides still involved, it was nice to see a couple of Division Two match-ups which sees Waterfall Jokers travelling to Sporting Jester B and Bluebell hosting Dreamers B in a derby match. James Place will hope for a giant-killing at home against Palms B, while favourites Gaffers A will fancy the home tie with Exiles B. In the Plate, Sporting Jester A will be confident of upsetting Tenerife Hammers C, while Terrace B will be looking forward to the monster pizza when they travel to The Crown.

Premier Preview
23rd January - 29th January 2015

Premier League preview
By Adi Benson AFTER a couple of weeks of Premier League action, this weekend sees round four of the FA Cup taking place.
Unfortunately, in the previous round, there were no giant-killings as such. But this round features one or two Premier League teams with difficult ties. They mainly involve teams at the bottom end of the table, who must decide whether they want a cup run or rest players to concentrate on reaching league safety. Cambridge Utd v Man Utd For Cambridge, this is a real David v Goliath fixture as there are 75 league places between the two teams. They will take heart, though, from the performance Yeovil put in against United in the last round and hope to keep it tight. A win would be huge, but financially, a draw and replay at Old Trafford would be welcomed as well. I suspect Van Gaal may bring in a few fringe players, but given his side’s recent form and performances, that could be a big mistake. They need to put this game to bed early and then think about resting players. The manager must make sure his players are not too complacent, either. Prediction: Away win Birmingham v West Brom Birmingham are on a good run of form in the Championship and will be confident of beating their neighbours. They huffed and puffed past Blyth Spartans in the last round, but at home they will be a different team. They will look to come out of the blocks quickly and nab an early goal. West Brom are unbeaten under Tony Pulis and come into this game on the back of a draw, and a clean sheet against Everton. But in terms of league positions, there is not a lot between the two
Cambridge eye famous victory
teams, and this is a potential banana skin for the Baggies. Prediction: Home win Sunderland v Fulham The Black Cats are in poor League form but, as they proved last season, they do love a cup run. They saw off Championship side Leeds in round three and will hope to do the same against Fulham. Their problem, though, has been scoring goals and this could end up costing them because Fulham have a halfdecent defence. Fulham are in the bottom half of the table, but they look safe from relegation and aren’t likely to push for a playoff spot. So they will be keen to progress much further in the cup. They will start with their strongest team and, should they score early on, an upset could be on the cards. Prediction: Away win S’hampton v C Palace Saints are the surprise package in the league this season and are in with a real chance of a Champions League spot. But I doubt that will deter Ronald
Koeman from playing a strong side. He is used to success and will want to fight on all fronts, so the Saints will be looking for nothing less than progression to the next round. Palace have been revived under Alan Pardew, but you suspect the league is more important to them, so I don’t expect to see a first-choice side. They will defend well and look for a counter-attacking goal, but I don’t see them pushing too hard for a win. Prediction: Home win Cardiff v Reading Cardiff are just four points above their opponents in the Championship and know they are in for a tough afternoon. They had a good win against Colchester to get through in the last round and, being the home team, will feel confident they can progress further. They are another team whose season would benefit from a good cup run. Reading squeezed past Huddersfield away from home and will look
to do it again this time. They have been playing well, picking up a couple of decent results in recent games, If they can carry that forward, they can get the win here. Prediction: Home win Tottenham v Leicester Spurs should really have this one wrapped up before a ball is even kicked, given Leicester’s precarious league position. But will that give Pochettino a false sense of security with his team selection? I believe you should always field your strongest team, especially if, like Spurs, this is a chance for silverware. Leicester are languishing in the Premier League relegation zone and this will come as a distraction for them. But is it a good distraction or not? I can’t see Pearson fielding a strong lineup. They will just go through the motions and, should luck be on their side, they will go through. But they won’t be too bothered. Prediction: Home win Blackburn v Swansea
Although they are having to sell their best players to balance the books, Blackburn are going all right in the league and they will fancy their chances, especially at home. They know their opponents are coming off the back of a heavy defeat and will be looking for an early advantage. If they can get themselves in front, then it’s game on. Swansea need to bounce back from the Chelsea defeat and this is a great chance to do so, especially as they need to get used to life without Bony. The players will be up for it as the defeat will have hurt, and the best way to get over it is to go out and win the next game. Prediction: Away win Liverpool v Bolton An unconvincing performance against AFC Wimbledon in the previous round did nothing to enhance the Red’s reputation. They are at home in this tie, though, and they know they’ll have to put on a performance for the fans, especially as they are facing a team from the bottom half
of the Championship. But Bolton, who have nothing to lose, are on the back of a couple of results. They will have to settle quickly and, if they can keep Liverpool quiet for 20 minutes, they are in with a chance of pulling off a shock. If they can counter-attack swiftly, they can damage Liverpool’s defence. Prediction: Home win Bristol City v West Ham City are flying high at the top of their division, but they needed a replay to see off fellow League 1 team Doncaster in round three. Although they are 38 league positions behind West Ham, they will view this as a good opportunity to take a scalp. They have good home form and, with their fans behind them, they will make life difficult for the Hammers. West Ham are going well in the league, playing attractive, attacking football. They also have Andy Carroll back in goal-scoring form, and he could be the difference between the two teams. You know they are going to throw plenty of balls into the area for him, and City must be at their defensive best. Prediction: Away win A Villa v Bournemouth Things are not good for Villa who are in a shocking run of results and poor form. They are weak at the back, have no threat going forward and Benteke looks a shadow of the player he was. A result here would give a little lift to underfire boss Paul Lambert, but it would merely be papering over the cracks. Bournemouth lead the Championship and are hoping to join the ranks of the Premier League next season. So this will be a good yardstick in terms of how far they have come and how far they still have to go. Given Villa’s current shortcomings, Bournemouth know they can win this one. Prediction: Away win
