Will Tenerife follow the Greek lead...? Continued from front. All-you-can-eat buffets and unlimited drinks by the pool are under threat, even though that particular tourism sector brings in £1.5billion a year for the Greek economy. And with so many allinclusive hotels here on the Island also popular with the British, could Greece PM Alexis Tsipras have sparked the first hint of a revolution throughout Europe’s tourist industry? The Canarian Weekly estimates that over 140 million euros is being lost to the Tenerife economy every year through all-inclusive packages which drive people out of local bars, restaurants and businesses. A similar loss of income has affected holiday resorts in Greece and the new leader has had enough. Tsipras, leader of the triumphant anti-austerity party Syriza, believes such deals “alienate tourists from the local economy” by keeping them in resorts and away from small businesses. The 40-year-old told thousands of supporters at a rally: “Our priority, above all, will be to restore the country’s lost dignity.” He has pledged to curb the type of mass tourism developed by Greece in the last few decades. The new Greek regime says it does not support an outright ban, but wants to encourage a move back to the traditional holiday scenario, where visitors use local bars, restaurants and attractions. Just like here, the Greek islands feature hundreds of all-inclusive hotels, as does the mainland in resorts such as Agios Nikolaos in Crete and Kardamena in Kos. They are popular with budget-happy families, who know they won’t face extra bills for
meals, drinks and entertainment. But all-inclusives are a nightmare for local traders and restaurantowners because holiday-makers tend to stay firmly in the resorts, for obvious reasons. British tour operators have long-standing contracts with all-inclusive resorts all over Europe. First Choice, which switched all its holiday hotels to all-inclusive two years ago, said: “The change in government has no impact on our operations in Greece. “As a tour operator, we are there to support our customers, who can be confident they can book their holidays to Greece with us without any concern.” The Association of British Travel Agents spokesman said: “The Greek government will have to consider the impact of any restrictions. All-inclusive holidays continue to grow in popularity, particularly in the family market. “The Greeks should consider that they might risk losing this
Based on figures of 25% tourism is all inclusive: Spend is 13 euros less per head. 6 million tourists per year is approx 120,000 a week 25% is 30,000 per week. 30,000 × 13 euros x 7 days in a week x 52 weeks a year = approx 141,960,000 euros lost income in a year! slice of the holiday market to other countries. “Even though all-inclusives can be seen as a controversial option, there are pros and cons.” Any changes made by the new Greek Government will not affect the cost of package holidays currently being advertised by British tour operators because the contracts and prices have already been agreed. In 2013 Canarian Weekly addressed the all-inclusive problem head-on. We worked with the Tenerife Cabildo and were able to publish the Inbound
Tourism Survey. It estimated that 24% of establishments in Tenerife offered all-inclusive packages. This corresponded to about 146 establishments, of which 81 are hotels, 17 apart-hotels and 48 apartment complexes. Some 22% of visitors to Tenerife took advantage of an all-inclusive option, the third-mostcommon type of board option with visitors, behind half-board (24.4%), and room-only (24.4%). The all-inclusive option was chosen more frequently by first-time visitors to Tenerife, but was lower for repeat visitors.
The average expenditure at source for allinclusive visitors to Tenerife (98.9 euros per person per day) was supplemented by an average daily spend of 25 euros per person once on the Island (almost 13 euros less per day than the average for all visitors). The reason for this was mainly because of lower spending in restaurants, and on food shopping two of the main costs for Tenerife tourists, along with general purchases. The average daily spend per person staying all-inclusive is 13 euros less than a visitor who is not. That’s 13 euros per day per person not going into the local economy, using shops, restaurants, bars, tipping, car rental, taxi drivers, and even down to using public transport. They all lose out to the allinclusive model. Tipping, for example, is an important source of revenue for those working in the hospitality industry. At the time, our frontpage story made this comment: “Tourists can make a difference by opting for holidays which offer a fair deal for local people and businesses and, in turn, have an enriched holiday experience. “Tenerife has always prided itself on being a repeat destination, a place where you feel so welcome that you want to return again and again. “However, some readers have told us that their ‘All-Inclusive’ holiday experience was so bad that they would never come back - on any board basis. So surely, this tourism model raises some serious questions about sustainability and ethics. And, before you all go into overdrive, we’re not saying it should be banned.” And we still maintain that view. For the time being.
There is no doubt that the all-inclusive industry has devastated some areas, and Playa Paraiso instantly springs to mind. While there are no official figures, it’s safe to say that hundreds of bars and restaurants have closed down over the last eight years. It’s also true to say that the financial crisis has played a big part, but the lack of bums on seats through AI has had a clear and devastating effect. The Greek PM has made some bold, grandstanding announcements and it does remain to be seen whether he puts words into action. In Tenerife, Cabildo President Carlos Alonso believes that AI has a long-term place in the Island’s tourism strategy. As a former Tourism minister he is knowledgeable on the subject, and his point that AI is popular with a large number of tourists is correct. Those that come to Tenerife for an all-inclusive holiday are putting money in the pockets of hoteliers who in turn employ a large section of the community and provide a large chunk of business for supply companies. And don’t forget that owners of AI hotels want their holidaymakers to visit local bars and restaurants. After all the less they eat and drink, the less they have to buy! It would seem crazy to ban 24% of your business, but this is what Greece is proposing. It is election year in Spain, both nationally and locally, and there is every chance that there will be a regime change. The economy will be the main focus, and while AI is a factor locally, it’s not on the radar nationally or even, we would suggest, in Santa Cruz, at the moment. But the comments of Tsipras may change that in the next few weeks.

NATO jet fighter horror kills 11
ELEVEN military personnel were killed when a two-seater Greek fighter jet crashed during NATO training exercises at a Spanish air force base on Monday.
The two Greek pilots perished on board, eight French officers were killed on the ground and another Frenchman died in hospital in Madrid on Tuesday. Twenty-one personnel were also injured after the two-seater F-16 crashed into five
parked aircraft at the Los Llanos base in south-eastern Spain. It lost power as it took off and fell, damaging all five jets. Firefighters rushed to the scene and battled the flames as black smoke billowed from the wreckage. Local media said that one of the two Greek pilots who died had performed a wrong manoeuvre. It was the highest death toll in a single day for the French armed forces since an ambush in Afghanistan in which 10 died in 2008. Denis Mercier, head of the French air force chiefs of staff, told BFM television that a naviga-
tor and five mechanics were among the French personnel killed. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy informed the Telecinco news programme that, in total, 10 Frenchmen and 11 Italians were injured. Of those, five Frenchmen with severe burns were in “serious but stable condition” in a Madrid hospital, and the rest were being treated in the city of Albacete, near the base, said the Defence Ministry. Four had been discharged. A judge in Valencia is leading the investigation, and a technical commission is also examining the wreckage and the plane’s black-
box recorders. French President Francois Hollande expressed his “deep respect for the commitment” of the airmen, who were preparing for air missions to fight “against terrorist groups” in Iraq and the African Sahel region. Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO Secretary General, was “deeply saddened” by the disaster. “This is a tragedy which affects the whole NATO family,” he said in a statement. “I express my heartfelt condolences to the loved ones and the nations of those who lost their lives, and I wish a speedy recovery to the injured.” The air base hosts elite exercises run by NATO
to train military personnel from 10 nations to carry out joint manoeuvres. They include the US, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, Britain and Spain, who are stationed there. The F-16 was taking part in NATO’s Tactical Leadership Programme (TLC), which seeks to improve multi-national co-operation in air operations. Britain, Germany, the US and Spain were also taking part in the exercises, but none of their nationals was reported injured. The French Defence Ministry’s website says it is “the most renowned and most demanding” programme for fighter
pilots. The base has housed the training centre for NATO pilots since 2010, according to its website, and some 750 personnel were taking part in the current course. The F-16, manufactured by US company Lockheed Martin, is the biggest-selling fighter plane in the world, with more than 4,500 made for 28 countries. Aviation analyst Sean Maffett told the BBC News Channel it was difficult to imagine how the accident had occurred because the runway where the aircraft was taking off is about 1,000ft (305m) away from where the crash apparently took place.
Such a special centre! ADEJE’S Los Olivos Centre for special-needs people, embracing senior citizens and people with disabilities, increased its membership in 2014. Altogether, the centre took care of 181 people during the year, and also increased the number of projects and services on offer. Councillor Carmen Rosa González Cabrera, who is at the helm, said: “Los Olivos has become the automatic reference for services and resources for people with special needs, regardless of the severity of their dis-
ability. “The centre is an excellent installation, which allows the professional team of 21 carry out their commendable work in different areas within the centre.” In 2014, the team worked with 181 persons with disabilities and with their families on a continuous basis. Among the services available are functional rehabilitation and a work integration scheme (ALAS), in which 14 people are currently participating. As for the social integration programme aiding adult development
(PISADA) - an initiative created to meet the needs of youngsters aged 12-21 - no fewer than 18 benefited last year, with a further 65 occupied in other complementary projects. Councillor González Cabrera added: “All of these projects, and those in development, are working towards the improvement of the quality of life of all centre users.” The department, continuing this philosophy, has recently worked on the structuring of radio workshops, using the municipal station Radio Sur Adeje 107.9 Fm. Stu-
dents learn about information technology, communication, and much more. Other projects in the areas of media communication, decoration
and gardening have also been run, all aimed at helping students achieve degrees of independence and self-autonomy, as well as reach individual goals set by each user.
“The culmination of a year of constant growth and work well done was the celebration of the International Day for People with Special Needs on 3rd December,” said Councillor González Cabrera. “It was an open-door day, in which the installations were on view to the public, as were numerous on-going activities. “In parallel, different associations - sporting, therapeutic, educative, health-related and education - visited the centre and met with the students throughout the day.”

UK-Spain feud boils up again! RELATIONS between Britain and Spain have hit “a new low” following a ban on Gibraltar’s Chief Minister from going to Madrid to deliver a keynote lecture.
The exclusion, brought about by Spain’s Foreign Ministry for “reasons of state”, has also caused severe tension between Spain and Gibraltar, sparking widespread condemnation. There have even been accusations that Fabian Ricardo, democratically-elected leader of a British Overseas Territory, was being treated in the same way as “suspected terrorists or hate preachers” like Abu Qatada. Mr Picardo had been invited by the prestigious Nueva Economia Forum think-tank to deliver a lecture on Britain’s sovereignty over Gibraltar. The speech, which would have been introduced by Simon Manley, Britain’s ambassador to Spain, was scheduled on Tuesday at Madrid’s Ritz Hotel. But the organisation was forced to rescind the invitation on the personal instructions of Spain’s Foreign Secretary, Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo. According to sources the organisation, which had hosted Mr GarciaMargallo just days ago, had been also threatened with “sponsorship problems” - an indication that pressure would be placed on its high-profile patrons if it did not withdraw its invitation. But what caused fury in both Britain and Spain was the decision of the Foreign Secretary, who has forged strong ties with Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, to cite “reasons of state” for blocking the visit. At least one Spanish MP says he will table
an urgent question in Spain’s Madrid Parliament next week. Chief Minister Picardo told the Sunday Express: “Incredibly, the Spanish Government has cited reasons for state as its justification for blocking my visit. This is the same reasoning used to prevent Islamic fundamental clerics from preaching messages of hate and inciting terror. It absolutely beggars belief. “At our frontier, they interfere with our freedom of movement, and now they are interfering with our freedom of speech. “In Gibraltar, we enjoy a long-held and proud democracy that would never stifle free speech in this way. “Is the Spanish Government really so fearful of Britain’s rightful sovereignty of Gibraltar that it feels the need to ban its democratically-elected Chief Minister from discussing this issue in Madrid openly?” Andrew Rosindell MP, chair of the all-party British overseas territory group, added: “This is a new low in relations between Britain and Spain over Gibraltar. “The fact that they can ban the chief minister of a British territory is shocking. It
shows the limits of how far the Government in Madrid is willing to go in order to insult Britain and Gibraltar. “What are they frightened of? I thought Spain was supposed to be a democratic society where free speech was permitted. Certainly, there in no one in the UK preventing anyone coming to London to argue that Gibraltar should be Spanish.” He added: “It seems that democracy itself is being undermined in Spain by their obsession about a territory over which they have absolutely no rights. It’s not only Gibraltar that is suffering, but the people of Spain, too.” A Home Office source confirmed that UK visitors were only ever excluded on “grounds of public policy” - a euphemism for national security risk. New extremism disruption orders, introduced by Home Secretary Theresa May last year to prevent the dissemination of extremist views, would “never be applied to ordinary debate”, said the source. A Foreign Office spokesman confirmed that Europe minister David Lidington had been “made aware” of the recent incident.
And added: “We regret the fact that the Chief Minister won’t be speaking at NEF on 3rd February. As the elected head of the Govern-
ment of Gibraltar and an EU citizen, his views should be heard.” A Gibraltar Government source has hinted that, despite the ban,
Mr Picardo was “still considering going to Madrid to deliver his address to an invited audience at another prestigious venue”.

Adeje advice in abundance ADEJE’S Citizens Advice Bureau dealt with over 48,000 requests during 2014, with the residency travel certificate top of the pile.
The bureau (the OAC office at the entrance to the Town Hall), un-
der Councillor Epifanio Díaz Hernández, recorded an average of 200 a day, with the travel certificate clocking 16,328 throughout the year. The busiest times were generally between 10am and midday, and Díaz Hernández said: “This office is one of the most in-demand services the Council offers to resi-
dents. The work carried out by the team allows people who live and work in Adeje to process applications in the most efficient way possible. “During recent years, we have adopted a number of working practises to allow us to enhance the service to the Adeje people, among them improvements to the team of people dealing
with the information requests. “At the same time, we have also introduced new technological aspects, which means we can attend to people’s requests more quickly.” The Councillor added: “This office also runs an on-line section for those people who might not have time to come to the Council office in
person, but who still have official matters to process with the local administration.” As well as the travel certificate, people also wanted residency certificates, civil partnership registrations, electronic signatures (for online tax declarations etc.) and many more. Another change has been the introduction of
a uniform for the office team, and Díaz Hernández said: “This is part of an overall improvement in the corporate image. “And when the working group themselves asked for a uniform, we felt it was a positive move as we believe it will help promote the presence of our team, who work directly with the public.”
Tenerife takes the Big Apple TURISMO de Tenerife, the official tourism agency for the Island, has launched its first serious American campaign by appearing at the New York Times Travel Show.
The campaign, under the slogan of “Adventure On”, is designed to showcase the many adventures a visitor can have in Tenerife. These include hiking up the tallest peak in Spain, Mt. Teide; whale and dolphin-watching; diving in the Atlantic Ocean; cycling some of
the most diverse terrain on the continent; kite-surfing; paragliding; visiting beautiful vineyards; dining on delectable food and wine; golfing at some of the world’s most breathtaking courses, or enjoying the adventure of simply relaxing at award-winning hotels and spas. “Adventure On” is geared specifically towards the American traveller interested in discovering new countries and cultures, and seeking the ultimate land and sea adventure. The campaign includes press trips, trade and social media advertising and product placements. Cabildo President Car-
los Alonso said: “We are thrilled to launch Tenerife’s first major US campaign at the New York Times Travel Show. “American-based consumers are increasingly expanding their travel boundaries and looking
to create their next adventure in a new place, where they can discover and explore. “Tenerife has been a top getaway for European travellers for decades, and it’s about time the US-based traveller
discovers the wonders and adventures our Island has to offer. “Everyone defines adventure differently, and however one defines it, one will find it in Tenerife.” This is the Cabildo’s first appearance at this
travel show, and booth visitors were treated to a variety of activities and presentations. These included food, wine and trip give-aways, interactive games, a photo booth, and dancers in traditional and region-related Carnival costumes. The booth campaign is the latest in a concentrated effort by Tenerife to crack the American market. In Spring 2014, Turismo de Tenerife secured the services of Washington DC-based marketing and branding firm Unison to develop the campaign to introduce Tenerife officially to American-based travellers - and serve as its official US office of representation.

There is nothing like a Dane…
FEBRUARY is upon us and in Tenerife, it’s the starting pistol for a few hectic weeks. Tomorrow’s golf event at Los Palos should be lots of fun.
There are lots of good golf competitions in Tenerife and some are a little more serious than others. And then there is Eric Bristow’s charity day. Just like the darts legend himself, it is so laid-back. Sure, there will be a competitive edge, but there will also be lots of banter, laughs and certainly a few pints. If you have nothing to do, then come and help us raise some money. We are just a couple of weeks away from Valentine’s Day, and in the next issue we will have a great tie-in with Venture Restaurants to celebrate issue number 888. The figure 8 is the lucky number for Chinese, so we are delighted to run a special competition, with a great prize at the brilliant 88 Restaurant in La Caleta. The Showtime venue gets busy at the end
of the month, with another night of Mediumship featuring the everpopular Stephanie Carr. And Darts is back. Two of the world’s top-10 players, Simon Whitlock and James Wade, return for another exhibition night. Last year they treated us to an amazing night of “arrers”, and this time James is vowing revenge! He’s so keen to win that he’s even leaving the Missus at home so there are no distractions. And throughout February and March, one of the nicest guys you will ever meet is back in Tenerife for some special events. Former Another Level star Dane Bowers will be here for a number of nights at some of our finest nightspots. He starts his Tenerife adventure on Tuesday at Biancos, in Safari Centre, and Thursday night at Magic Bar with a couple of sets. Dane will be playing various nights over the next nine weeks, and he will also host a weekly show live on Oasis Fm! Look out for our exclusive interview with Dane in next week’s Canarian Weekly.

Dear Editor, I refer to last week’s letter regarding various machines being used on the pathways of Las Americas and Los Cristianos lately. I have been a resident on the Island for 20 years, and have seen many things come and go. But the latest craze of these electric scooters used by all ages is appalling. The speed they travel is faster than I can drive through Las Americas in my car (with all the crossings). My mother, who is 80 years old and quite infirm, has lived here for 18 years, and she dare not go out of the house for fear of being run down or knocked over. Who has given the irresponsible people who rent out these machines licence to do so? Very concerned resident
Dear Editor, Many guests at the Las Dalias Hotel in Adeje are so disappointed at the decision by Iberostar to make this Hotel All-Inclusive from 1st November. I have visited this hotel in the past 29 years, and one guest, David Fothergill, is so aggrieved that he has raised a petition in protest. Over 50 regular holiday-makers, who have visited over many years, have signed in agreement. Iberostar have removed all the usual options in favour of All -Inclusive, and a deputation to the Hotel Director proved to be of no avail - he implied that it was a head office ruling. In this day and age, it seems the customer is not always right, as well as having a detrimental effect on local employment. Perhaps the power of the media can move Iberostar to restore the “status quo” because many guests may find alternative holidays and be lost to Tenerife. Rodney Brittain
Dear Editor, After reading John Lloyd’s letter in last week’s issue, I feel the need to support his valid criticism of the Scrooges - extremely inconsiderate ones at that - who park up for unlimited periods in the drop-off area at Reina Sofia airport. On Tuesday morning, that area resembled a car park. It was absolutely grid-locked because of individuals who have only thought for themselves. The airport authorities or the police need to hit these people where it hurts: with on-thespot fines, or towing their vehicles away. Sadly, it spoils it for everybody else, but it’s the only way some people learn. Jeremy Law, Las Chafiras
Dear Editor As a regular visitor to Tenerife, one of the things I greatly admire are the trees and bushes, etc, which are set out among the hotels and other buildings in landscaped plots. The only thing to spoil this and other walkways are the countless piles of advertisement magazines left on walls, bushes, telephone boxes, doorways, tied to posts - and virtually everywhere! Can nothing be done about this? It might be difficult to catch the people putting them there, but why not prosecute the magazine owners? Name supplied

How to book A cancer mini-bus CAROL Chappell, who raised an astonishing 75,000 euros in under two years to provide a free minibus for cancer patients in the south, is still coming down to earth.
The 18-seater, which she pledged to Spanish charity Contra de Cancer (AECC), is running daily to and from the University Hospital of Candelaria in La Laguna - the only specialist place for treatment on the Island. And she cannot believe her ambition was achieved so quickly. “I had magnificent support from so many quarters, especially from companies and individuals who will probably never have to use the bus themselves,” she said this
week. “I can’t stop thanking them all for their generosity, and I
am still so busy being involved in the project that I seem to be
rushed off my feet most of the time.” So if you cannot get
hold of her by phone for whatever reason during the day, that’s
why! But if you need to get to the hospital for regular appointments, phone Carlota Coba Hernandez or Lourdes at the charity on 922 276 912. Since funding for free transport to Candelaria hospital ceased in 2013, it has caused serious problems for many cancer patients. They can’t drive themselves there because the treatment is too debilitating to allow them to drive home. They cannot always find someone with enough spare time to take them. And some simply cannot afford to travel to the North on public transport frequently. And those factors are exactly why Carol launched her magnificent fund-raising charity, which will continue collecting money to keep the mini-bus running.

Libby Lane paves way for other women priests
Anglicans salute first English female bishop THE Reverend Libhy Lane has become the first Church of England female bishop after being consecrated during Monday’s York Minster ceremony.
dawn raids. Spanish National Police said the men had a “similar profile” to those who carried out the recent attacks in Paris, and that they had been inspired by the internet propaganda of the jihadist Islamic State group. The Interior Ministry could not form a link between the latest arrests and continuing investigations into suspects linked to this month’s attacks in Paris and intercepted plots in Belgium - some of whom are said to have travelled to Spain.
The 48-year-old, who was Vicar of St Peter’s Hale and St Elizabeth’s Ashley, in Greater Manchester, since April 2007, is the new Bishop of Stockport - and more than than 1,000 people were in the congregation to witness the historic occasion. The Church formally adopted legislation last November to allow women bishops, ending a centuries-old tradition of exclusively-male bishops. But the move continues to divide some Anglicans, and the ser-
vice was delayed briefly by an opponent of the changes. The Rev Paul Williamson stepped forward shouting “not in the Bible” after the Archbishop of York asked the church if Mrs Lane should be ordained as a bishop. The second time Dr John Sentamu asked the congregation, there was no opposition and the consecration, or the process of being made holy, took place. A Church of England spokesman described Mr Williamson, priest in charge of a church in Hanworth, Middlesex, as a “serial protester”. He said: “He’s got the right to protest, but the contrast was between a lone voice protesting and a sea of voices affirming.” The two-hour service was led by Dr Sentamu, during which he and other bishops laid their hands on Mrs Lane and prayed, earning the lengthy applause which followed. Mrs Lane, who was aware the consecration would be an “emotional” moment, said: “It is a remarkable thing that this happens to me, and people have been very supportive of me personally. But actually, this is about a moment in the Church’s history.” It was a first for the country, but not elsewhere in ther world. Delighted Anglican women bishops from the US, New Zealand, South Africa, Iceland, Sweden and Germany were at
York Minister to welcome her to their ranks. And retired Swedish bishop Christina Odenberg said it was inevitable England would catch up. Meanwhile, long-time campaigner Christina Rees, of Women and the Church, said that now the mother church had made this move, other provinces of the Anglican Communion, which had been holding back out of “deference” would follow suit. Bishop Lane’s former curate at Hale, Georgina Watmore, said she looked forward to the day when there would be a female Archbishop, “probably in my lifetime”. Her consecration arrived more than 20 years after women became priests in the Church of England. And it comes after the general synod gave the final seal of approval to the legislation on women bishops, following its passage through Parliament last year. After the change was approved, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said the Church was entering a “completely new phase of our existence”. Bishop Lane was ordained as deacon in 1993 and as priest in 1994, serving her curacy at St James’s Church, Blackburn. Since January 2010, she has been Dean of Women in Ministry for the Diocese of Chester Her husband, George, is also a priest and they
were one of the first married couples in the Church of England to be ordained together According to her church’s website, she is a Manchester United supporter and is learning to play the saxophone, But divisions still remain between Anglicans who feel the change is consistent with their faith, and traditionalists who disagree. Opponents of women bishops include some who place great importance on the laying-on of hands by existing bishops in the consecration of new bishops, and wish to be looked after by those not affected by the involvement of women in this process. Mrs Lane will not be a lone female bishop in England for long because Gloucester, Oxford and Newcastle are among the dioceses where new bishops will also soon be appointed. And interviews for the vacancy as bishop for the Southwell and Nottingham diocese took place at the start of December. Anglican churches in Scotland and Wales already allow women as bishops, but have not yet appointed any. Outside the Church of England, there are more than 20 women bishops in the wider Anglican church, including the Rev Pat Storey, who was appointed Bishop of Meath and Kildare in the Church of Ireland in September 2013.

Armed forces’ Iraq mission SPANISH troops left for Iraq on Wednesday on a mission to help train the country’s armed forces to combat the terrorist group DAESH.
The 30-strong group will join their six comrades already installed at the general head-
quarters of operations in the region - four in Baghdad and two in Kuwait. The newcomers will be attached to the Baghdad Diplomatic Support Centre (BDSC) near the airport. Other troops from Spain will be incorporated in the coming weeks, until all 300 of the full contingent of military personnel have arrived.
The mission is confirmation of Spain’s commitment to international peace and stability, while guaranteeing the security of its own nation. The armed forces, in keeping with the country’s foreign policy, oversee the daily well-being of Spanish society at home and also in unstable regions beyond the borders.
New York police probe a 55-year death puzzle
Photo: New York Daily News
A MURDER investigation into a man stabbed some 55 years ago has been opened by police in New York.
In the late Fifties, the New York Times reported that Antonio Ciccarello had been knifed near his home, on the Lower East Side, as he made his way to work in Manhattan. Mr Ciccarello, an Ital-
ian immigrant working as a porter, had surgery and survived the attack, but he never filed a police report. Following his death at the age of 97 last September, the medical examiner said it was connected to the stabbing, according to the Times. The operation following the stabbing led to an obstruction which, eventually, proved fatal. Now, his death is being treated as homicide, and two detectives have been looking at old
crime reports and medical record - to no avail as yet. His daughter, 57-yearold Mary Paloglou, told New York’s Daily News: “It baffles the mind; it baffles our family’s mind. The person who stabbed him is probably dead. Long dead. She added that her dad did not know the man who attacked him. “It could have been a bum in the street,” she added. “It was just a random act. He wasn’t robbed.”

Poor old HMS Victory staring defeat in BRITAIN’S most celebrated warship, HMS Victory, is absolutely riddled with rot and leaking, according to maintenance reports.
The historic ship, which defied the onslaught of the combined French and Spanish navies at the Battle of Trafalgar, is gradually being pulled apart by its own weight. Exactly the same diagnosis was made in July 2011, when the Ministry of Defence set up a 10year plan to restore it to full glory. But now, the flagship of Lord Nelson, in dry dock at Portsmouth harbour, is facing its ultimate battle. The 245-year-old ship is still in dire straits according to maintenance documents and a structural survey obtained by
The Sunday Telegraph. Much-needed repairs, which began in 2011, do not appear to have been carried out as planned, and previous renovation work may have even damaged HMS Victory’s structural integrity. What is puzzling is that the current maintenance documents and structural survey appear to be exactly the same as in 2011, which were made public then. So, no big secret revealed about the state of play aboard the Victory! Either way, though, with the British Government aiming to cut funding for her and considering handing over the running of her, the ship faces an uncertain future. Campaigners fear it could be “offloaded” to the local council, a private company or to a charity, who would not have the funds to pre-
serve the warship. The ship is being gradually pulled apart by its own weight, because it is not adequately sup-
ported by the cradle built for it in the naval dockyard. It is sitting in a dry dock, which means
there is no water around the vessel to support its bottom and sides. Instead, the weight of the vessel is pushing the
sides out. As a result, so-called “knee joints” - vast brackets which hold the sides of the ship to beams that give

ictory is in the face the vessel its internal framework - are working loose. Gradual movement of the timbers has been observed by the researchers, and gaps as large as 3cm are now visible between the joints and the sides or the beams. In some places, the ends of the beams are now as much as 10cm from the sides of the ship, while some joints are no longer attached to the hull at all. Researchers carried out investigations on nine knee joints with no obvious structural problems, but found that one-third of them were simply not connected to the hull. As well as studying the ship itself, the report’s authors looked at historical shipbuilding documents to fully understand the purpose of the knees. They discovered that some bolts used to hold them in place were removed during previous restoration work. In some cases, where they have been replaced, the new bolts fix only the knees to the planking that gives the ship an “inner skin”, and do not penetrate the planks which hold the sides in place. A second report reveals widespread problems with rainwater entering the ship, leading to extensive wood rot. The water is also thought to have worsened the structural problems. The document states that there were even reports of water leaking into the cabin used by Thomas Hardy, who captained the ship at the Battle of Trafalgar and was with Lord Nelson as he died on board from wounds inflicted in
the fighting by a French sharp-shooter. Despite several reports of leaks and the damage caused by the water, the report states: “Very little work has been requested and approved to alleviate this problem.” In the report, officials admit that they do not even know the sources of some of the major leaks. Another area of concern relates to the rigging. The report found that remedial work needed had not been carried out and could even lead to the closure of parts of the Upper Deck to the public, because of the risk of parts of the rigging falling. The maintenance problems facing the ship have emerged as the government looks to cut the running costs. And later this year, ministers are expected to announce changes to the way it is run. Although more than 350,000 people visit the ship annually, HMS Victory remains a serving, commissioned warship, its basic £1.5m-a-year maintenance being paid for out of the defence budget. An MoD spokesman insisted it would not sell off the Victory, but campaigners fear the running of it will be taken over by a charity such as the Mary Rose Trust - the local council, or a private company. Alistair Thompson, deputy leader of the opposition Conservative group on Portsmouth Council and leader of a local campaign in support of the warship, warned: “We will lose part of the tradition, and the ship will no longer be maintained to the
standard it should be. “These problems sound incredibly expensive. Would any third party possibly be able to foot the bill? “In terms of British history, HMS Victory is probably the most important artefact we have. It defines a whole period of British history. “It must be protected. I would be deeply concerned if, at the time the Navy knows about these significant problems, it is trying to offload them on to someone else.” He added: “The Navy generates an income from this and gets PR from it. It has many traditions it is extremely proud of, and has an unparalleled history which should be embraced.” Admiral the Lord Boyce, a former First Sea Lord and chief of the defence staff, said: “The important thing is that HMS Victory remains. “She is absolutely iconic - a living, visible memory of Pax Britannica and how this country gained its great wealth through its maritime trade, as a result of the Royal Navy ruling the waves. It captures that place in our history.” The vessel was launched in 1765 and enjoyed its finest hour in 1805 at the Battle of Trafalgar, which ushered in more than a century of British supremacy at sea. She was later used as a depot and a training vessel before being placed in a dry dock for her preservation following a campaign in the Twenties. However, she continued to face enemy action and was damaged by bombs during a 1941 Luftwaffe raid. An MoD spokesman said: “There is an ongoing programme of repair and investment to ensure that this iconic vessel is preserved for future generations. “We are currently considering a number of options for how she will be funded in the future, but there are no plans for her to be sold and she will remain a commissioned warship.”

Lavatory humour? Hardly!
Cheers! Wine thief helps himself to £20,000 bottle A MAN who stole a rare bottle of wine worth nearly £20,000 from Harrods last month said he was unaware it was worth so much.
Boris Chaudemanche was caught walking out of the Knightsbridge store holding the rare Burgundy Grand Cru on 6th December. He told a previous hearing at Hammersmith Magistrates
Court that he had “no idea” the bottle of Romanee-Conti was worth £19,995 and that he planned to drink it. The 34-year-old, who has previous convictions for driving offences but not for theft, admitted to drinking a bottle of whisky every two days. His sentence was adjourned to ascertain whether he has a drink problem. Chaudemanche went into Harrods carrying a large roll of tin foil with the intention, said pros-
ecutors, of putting stolen items inside. Stuart Stevens, prosecuting, told the earlier hearing: “It appears that he is more of a connoisseur than a criminal mastermind. “He could not believe it was worth that much. He thought it was worth about £45 to £70. When officers told him how much it was worth, he just said. ‘What?’.” Chaudemanche should have been sentenced on Monday, but the hearing was postponed after
probation staff sent notice of an alcohol-treatment assessment to the wrong address. District Judge Shelagh Bayne said: “I have no alternative but to adjourn because the court has already heard that an alcohol treatment assessment is important to consider. I’m putting this back for three weeks.” Chaudemanche, from South Bromley, will reappear at the court in February.
A MAN is entitled to urinate while standing up, according to a German court, following a compensation claim by a landlord for bathroom floor damage. The renter, seeking 1,900 euros (£1400), claimed his marble floor had been damaged by urine. But the Duesseldorf judge ruled that the man’s method was within cultural norms, saying: “Urinating standing up is still common practice.” Yet, believe it or not, there is some debate in Germany about whether men should sit or stand to pee. Some toilets have red, traffic-style signs forbidding the standing position - but those who choose to sit are often referred to as a “Sitzpinkler”, suggesting it is not masculine
behaviour. Judge Stefan Hank agreed with an expert’s report that uric acid had caused some damage to the bathroom’s floor. But he said men who insist on standing “must expect occasional rows with housemates, especially women” but cannot be held to account for collateral damage. “Despite growing domestication of men in this matter, urinating while standing up is still common practice,” he added.

Demis will live on Forever and Ever! DEMIS Roussos, the kaftan-wearing singer who captured the hearts of millions of women everywhere with his voice, has died at the age of 68. The hugely-proportioned Greek, who sold more than 60 million albums, has died aged 68 in a private hospital in Athens, where he had been suffering an undisclosed illness for some time. He was best known for his solo hits in the Seventies and Eighties, including Forever and Ever, Goodbye and Quand je t’aime. Demis, who was also a member of progressive rock group Aphrodite’s Child, was renowned for his off-screen role in Mike Leigh’s hilarious 1977 television play Abigail’s Party, having provided the party’s soundtrack. Vangelis, his Aphro-
dite’s Child bandmate, paid tribute in a statement that begins: “Demis my friend. I have just arrived in London and I’ve been told that you decide to take the long voyage. I’m shocked because I can’t believe that this happened so soon. “Nature gave you this magic voice of yours, which made millions of people around the world very happy. “As for me, I keep those special memories that we shared together those early days, and I wish you to be happy wherever you are.” He signed off: “Goodbye my friend, goodbye. Love Vangelis.” Fellow-Greek singer Nana Mouskouri paid tribute on French radio RTL, saying: “He had a superb voice. He travelled in the world ... he loved what he was doing. He was an artist, a friend.
I hope he is in a better world.” The singer was born Artemios Ventouris Roussos in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1946, to a Greek father and Egyptian mother of Italian origin. He was raised there
until his parents moved to Greece in the early Sixties after losing their possessions during the Suez Crisis. Roussos began his music career at 17 when he joined a band called The Idols, where he met Vangelis.
Aphrodite’s Child produced three albums, including It’s Five O’Clock and The Apocalypse of St John. They and enjoyed huge success in Europe, especially in France. in the late Sixties. Demis went on to enjoy a successful solo career, topping the charts in several countries with Forever And Ever in 1973, before doing the same in the UK three years later. He was still performing on stage in 2012. Roussos was photographed surrounded by awards for the UK sales of his albums, including gold discs for Happy To Be and My Only Fascination. His fondness for kaftans saw him dubbed “The Kaftan King” and he often wore them for his performances on shows such as Top of the Pops. He was also famous for
his vocal adaptation of the score from the 1981 film Chariots of Fire, which was composed by Vangelis. On 14th June, 1985, Roussos boarded TWA Flight 847 from Athens to Rome - and found himself at the mercy of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, who hijacked the plane. The men, who had smuggled a pistol and grenades through airport security, held the passengers at gunpoint. The militant group demanded the release of 17 members of Hezbollah and the Iraqi Islamic Daawa Party, who had been detained in Kuwait for attacks that killed six people in 1983. Roussos spent his 39th birthday in captivity, before being released in Beirut on 18th June, but most of the remaining 153 passengers spent 17 days on the plane.

Exactly where do you park your hard-earned savings?
By Laura Mann MARIO Draghi, the European Central Bank (ECB) president, is the first major central banker to cut key interest rate below zero. It means that banks who park their money at the central bank must pay to do so. But what about the key question: what happens if banks will not lend? Will the ECB apply pressure on the highstreet bank to follow suit and penalise savers in order to circulate money? Is this a sign of things to come for people who have striven all their lives to save cautiously, only to find that this is their recompense? The ECB operates at the heart of the Eurozone by setting monetary policy, with the
main objective of maintaining internal price stability to keep inflation in check. The fact remains that even with the current interest rate offered by deposit-taking financial institutions, we are paying for having our money on deposit, if you factor in inflation. This occurs when the inflation rate exceeds the nominal interest rate, which means when the real interest rate is negative. Inflation is the route of all evil in an economy. It erodes the purchasing power of money and has caused untold damages, forcing the collapse of powerful nations. That said, there are signs of late that governments/central banks have, overtly, been too hawkish on inflation. And if we are not careful, we may face a period of deflation. But I have to admire Mario Draghi, the charismatic, congenial, Italian banker. After all, he has the difficult task of conjuring up a way to get banks to lend to small, credit-starved companies. Let’s hope that the recently-announced
400bn euros of cheap loans will find its way to the heart of the problem, which is to entice small companies to hire more people and use their entrepreneurial skills to tap into new markets. Small companies employ about 80% of the workforce in most modern economies, with little help from government and banks - just their ingenuity. Despite all the rhetoric of governments pontificating to the electorate that one should have private savings for retirement, they need you to spend to get them out of trouble and get the economy back on track; otherwise, they’re out of a job! Double-edged sword, so what does one do? Like all things in life, it’s about finding equilibrium - not to live a hermit’s life and deprive oneself from the pleasures of life, but to be happy and invest wisely. Happiness is not a destination but a way of life. The balance between saving and spending is always difficult to assess. Also, how much time do you dedicate to this mathematical
equation? “Not enough” is the answer in most cases. It is essential to maintain a level of cash in the bank for prudence. But when it costs money to keep it in the bank, one has to ask why! I am not advocating complete withdrawal, but you need to qualify whether or not you should seek a level of diversification. Pick the jurisdiction that is right for you There are many offshore jurisdictions with tax-friendly policies that offer attractive investment opportunities to expatriates. When choosing the right jurisdiction, it is paramount to establish a number of key points: *Domicile status *Inheritance tax *If and when you will be returning home To find out what investment opportunities are available to you and in which jurisdictions you will benefit most from by investing your money, speak to a locally-focused consultant with international knowledge, and a comprehensive understanding of available options on how to invest your excess funds.

He has even booked the Solana’s honeymoon suite for their first night together. Glynn wants Jacqueline to join him in a performance at Neptune’s, but as a singer she is hopeless. Then Glynn bumps into local bar singer Annie Redmond and realises that the night will be a success after all. Inspired by a pep talk from Crystal, Kenneth and Liam launch a Blow and Go makeover competition - which attracts some very unlikely entrants indeed.

Ginger And Rosa BBC2, 22.30
London, 1962. Two teenage girls - Ginger and Rosa - are inseparable. They skip school together, talk about love, religion and politics and dream of lives bigger than their mothers’ domesticity. But the growing threat of nuclear war casts a shadow over their lives. Ginger (Elle Fanning) is drawn to poetry and protest, while Rosa (Alice Englert) shows Ginger how to smoke cigarettes, kiss boys and pray. Finally, as the Cuban Missile Crisis escalates - and it seems the world itself may come to an end - the lifelong friendship of the two girls is shattered. Ginger clutches at one hope: if she can help save the world from extinction, perhaps she too will survive this moment of personal devastation.

Last Tango In Halifax BBC1, 21.00 Three months have passed and it is the morning of Gillian and Robbie’s wedding. A nervous Gillian confides to Caroline that she has doubts about the marriage. Caroline assures her that cold feet are normal, while Robbie waits anxiously over a strong drink or two at the hotel. Later, Gillian confesses to Caroline that sleeping with Ollie and John was only a distraction and not the real cause of her anxiety. Gillian is fearful that Robbie would not forgive her if he found out about Eddie. Meanwhile, Alan rejects Gary’s attempt to apologise for the newspaper article. Celia treads carefully but suggests that he deserves a second chance as Gary has offered to upgrade their flights to Australia. Much to Gary’s delight Alan decides to accept his offer, a tacit understanding that things between them will improve. For centuries it was thought that animals did not share the same emotions as us but new science is starting to change that view. She starts by travelling to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to meet some bonobos who seem to have found the secret of longlasting successful relationships. From wild dogs in Africa to tamarins in the UK, Liz continues her journey to find out what it takes to have a successful relationship in the animal kingdom. In Switzerland Liz learns about Tariq, a goose who, when faced with a choice, stuck firmly to his mate. She also meets Dotty and Zee, a pair of penguins who defied expectation when after ten years together as a devoted couple, it was discovered that things were not quite as they seemed.

BBC1, 21.00
Rising star Sergeant Sam Honeywell is found beaten and shot in his burnt-out car in Essex. The police are up in arms in what is a hugely emotive and political case for them, and DCI Jim Sullivan is determined to nail Honeywell’s killer. When a local drug dealer and son of known crime boss Dean Fallon seems to have his alibi sewn up, suspicion shifts closer to home. Honeywell is discovered to have been in an affair with Kate Parry, wife of his best friend, Sergeant Carl Parry (James Alexandrou). It looks bad for Parry, and Jack reveals details of Honeywell’s final moments, which hits Sullivan hard - he had been like a father to the murdered cop. Emilia Fox is Dr. Nikki Alexander, David Caves is Jack Hodgson, Richard Lintern is Dr. Thomas Chamberlain and Liz Carr is Clarissa Mullery. Guest starring James Alexandrou and Jason Watkins. Cooking show. Hairy Biker Dave Myers travels to Egypt, home to some of the oldest recipes known to man. From the fantastic street food of Cairo to a family feast 500 miles south in ancient Aswan, Dave voyages up the Nile to find the origins of some of our favourite dishes. On his adventure, Dave fulfils a dream to visit the pyramids of Giza and learns that they were built by labour fed on the humble loaf. He goes to the lush oasis of Al Fayoum in search of a dish with mythical properties and, on the banks of the River Nile, discovers a place where man first turned to farming. Venturing further into the land of the pharaohs, Dave discovers the origins of baking and living proof of a food that changed the eating habits of the planet. To mark the end of his journey, Dave is invited by a family of Nubians for a feast to celebrate the end of Eid al-Adha. He helps prepare a traditional meal that has become legendary across the entire Arab world and receives hospitality he’ll never forget.

Panorama reports on a week spent in the accident and emergency department of the University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton, as this vital part of the NHS faces unprecedented pressure. It is the second programme Panorama has made in this hospital. One year on, why have things changed so much? There are more patients who are more ill, others who should never have come to A&E in the first place, and the hospital’s ‘regulars’ - one has come in over 100 times. Panorama talks to patients and to stressed and overstretched staff, the front line troops of the NHS.

Deirdre and Me: A Tribute
30th January -5th February 2015
T uesday
ITV1, 19.30
Another chance to see this documentary special looking at the woman behind those famous glasses, showing as a tribute to the late Anne Kirkbride and her 40-year career playing Deirdre Barlow on Coronation Street. Originally shown in November 2012, this hour-long documentary sees Anne takes the cameras backstage at Coronation Street and talks about everything from her battle with depression to being diagnosed with cancer, her close relationships with her fellow cast members to meeting her future husband on set. And she explains how she coped playing one of the most loved characters on our screens as she faced such personal issues behind-thescenes. Anne takes viewers back to the start of her career when she was a theatre stage manager in Oldham, before talking about the first time she stepped onto Coronation Street. She reveals her fears that, after just six years on the Street, she might have to leave the show when her colleague, Neville Buswell, who played her husband, decided to quit. The programme also reunites Anne and William Roache, who plays her screen husband Ken, with Johnny Briggs, who played Mike Baldwin. The trio discuss the affair that rocked the Street almost 30 years ago when Ken discovered Deirdre had been sleeping with Mike. Plus, Anne talks about her private life, including her cancer diagnosis, and her battle with depression that she faced as Deirdre was locked up for fraud in the famous Weatherfield One storyline. As she takes cameras into her dressing room on the Coronation Street set, Anne also talks about her close off-screen relationships with her on-screen family. And other cast members past and present, including William Roache, Michelle Keegan and Chris Gascoyne share their thoughts about working with Anne over the last 40 years.

Rory Bremner’s Coalition Report: From Here To Austerity BBC2, 22.00
Rory Bremner takes on the coalition in a one-off special, with help from Matt Forde, Sara Pascoe, John Bird and a gallery of new characters. In May 2010, Britain went to the polls to elect a new government. Except they didn’t. ‘The people have spoken’ as Bill Clinton remarked. ‘It’s just we don’t know what they said.’ Days later, two men got hitched in the Downing Street Garden and promised to govern in the interests of the country. What happened next? Who won? Who lost? And while the Coalition continued like a marriage, with lots of arguments, what was going on elsewhere, in Scotland and beyond Westminster? Recorded in front of a live audience, Rory Bremner brings a bunch of new characters to life, alongside old favourites to make sense of the nonsense and ask, ‘what is going on?’

Alaska: Earth’s Frozen Kingdom BBC2, 20.00
Alaska is the latest wildlife trilogy from the BBC’s award-winning Natural History Unit, showcasing one of the most iconic wildernesses on the planet. Narrated by Dougray Scott, this three-part series takes in a year in Alaska, revealing the stories of pioneering Alaskans, both animal and human, as they battle the elements and reap the benefits of nature’s seasonal gold rush. Episode one shows spring. Each spring Alaska faces the greatest transformation on earth. Temperatures soar and as the sun’s rays hit the snow and ice, water, light and warmth return. Alaska’s transition to spring may look magical, but for those animals emerging from a winter’s sleep it’s a time of intense competition. In the first episode viewers find a mother sea otter nursing her fluff-ball baby through the early, chilly days of spring; black bear cubs emerge from their den to find themselves faced with a daunting climb from a tree. It’s ‘get up and go’ for an Arctic ground squirrel, who has just a few hours to find his mate before rivals muscle in. Stealthy 50-ton sperm whales steal fish from the end of fishermen’s lines, as everything rushes to make the most of the great spring bounty.

Although he has no official title, Cromwell is increasingly relied on to run the King’s affairs. Cromwell manoeuvres a Bill through Parliament acknowledging Henry, rather than the Pope, as head of the Church of England. This is the first step in Henry granting his own divorce from Katherine of Aragon. Out of the blue, a major obstacle to Henry’s marriage plan arises when Harry Percy’s wife claims her own marriage is unlawful on the grounds that her husband had previously made a binding contract of marriage with Anne Boleyn. With the Cardinal now dead the Boleyn family look to Cromwell to fix Harry Percy, a task Cromwell approaches with relish, remembering how Percy helped bring the Cardinal down. As Anne and Cromwell become allies, Anne secures him a formal position in the King’s household.

Modern Times: Warwick Davis’s Big Night BBC2, 21.00 Actor Warwick Davis is planning a revolution: he wants to establish Britain’s first ever theatre company for reduced height actors. Normally, these actors are stuck with pantomime or ‘creature work’ in films and TV. But now in a fun, insightful and touching film directed by award winning filmmaker Ursula MacFarlane, Warwick invests his own money and time to form a company that takes on the classics in mainstream theatres up and down the land. Will the specially sized set work? And how will the audience respond to a classic farce played entirely by reduced height actors? In a film that also explores the challenges little people face in an average-height world, including a serious operation Warwick supports his wife Sam through, cameras follow this make or break time for Warwick, the cast and his family.

They’re keeping it fresh! CHANGE is a daunting prospect, both for those who seek it and for those who create it. However, it is an integral part of life and, more to the point, for any well-run business.
The Gaelic Corner, on The Patch in Las Americas is, arguably (alongside sister-bar The Dubliner), the finest of the many Irish bars on the Island. Some might say the best of any group of bars in the Canaries. They are, without question, the most consistently-busy bars in Tenerife. Why? Well, good service and image among other things play a part. Predominantly though, it has been an on-going history of talented and charismatic musicians who have been pulling hundreds and, on occasion, thousands of punters through the doors of these outstanding bars. Playing a huge role in this history has been Andy and Vinnie, resident duo in The Gaelic for years. Together, they have amassed a following of thousands of residents and tourists alike. And even when every other musician on the Island was playing to three or four tables, these two had hundreds. It is, therefore, a terrifying and intimidating challenge to fill their boots and continue their legacy as resident musician in The Gaelic Corner as times move on. That chance was given to Peter Hoey, a promising young talent and great friend of mine, just around two years ago. The first time I saw Pete (as everyone calls him), he had been invited on stage in The Dubliner, and I had no idea
what to expect. But the Dubliner boys more than know their music and I assumed he would be good. Singing Just The Way You Are by Bruno Mars, his voice travelled across the huge floor. And in a bar notoriously loud and raucous, it fell silent for a musical moment and all that could be heard was Pete´s impeccable, adorable voice. The night would eventually lead to Pete being employed by the same company which owns The Gaelic Corner, but playing and singing in a bar 15 minutes along the road. To fill a bar is one thing, but to maintain its success throughout the night with just one man and his guitar is something else. Few are blessed with that skill, and it persuaded the management to move Pete´s residency from O´Donoghue’s to the much larger Gaelic Corner. Pete is a well-seasoned musician and has played all over Europe and beyond. Most recently, and before moving to Tenerife, his music career took him to Santa Ponsa, Mallorca. But now Pete plays in Tenerife, I know of tourists who have changed their regular holiday destination from Mallorca to Tenerife so they
can hear him play and sing. So what is it about Peter Hoey that has holiday-makers moving around the islands to hear him? Technology nowadays means the world is moving at a faster pace than ever, and you have to keep things fresh in any profession - especially music. Pete, being an Irishman in an Irish bar, can and does play an abundance of classic and modern Irish songs. But when he moves away from the Irish stuff, it becomes clear why he is so popular and has continued the success of his predecessors, Andy and Vinnie. Pete was doing “mashups” of Mumford and Sons and Beyonce while others were still figuring out who Mumford and Sons were. He was brave enough to try songs by Bastille when Bastille were hardly known. Now, you can hear Pete playing songs by Take That and, the next minute, Avicii. And all the while to a packed dance floor and bar full of loving fans. His distinct voice, with his flawless guitar skills, means Pete can literally play anything and keep his audiences entranced. Find him every night of the week in the fantastic Gaelic Corner on
The Patch, Las Americas. As the weeks pass, article by article, I have covered what is turning into an enormous range of topics, guitarists, soul singers, hosts and duos. I always focus on the diversity and dissimilarity between shows and artists over here, and why that makes Tenerife a music lover’s paradise. A man who epitomises and symbolises this diversity is Adam See, the embodiment of what this Island needs. His first year on the music scene here has just ended, so let us take a look at his achievements and why he is an exciting prospect. Adam is a professional bass player. He moved here after working with
a Beatles cover group in Greece, and previously toured with the likes of Westlife, playing to thousands of people. Yet an agency looking for an opera singer first snapped him up over here. Adam, out of his comfort zone, was forced to grow and adapt - and he did so magnificently. The trio he sings in are known as The Three Tenors, and I urge you to see this show. But it is what Adam does as a solo performer that I want to focus on. As the success of the trio grew, Adam became more popular and now sings in several bars all over the South. His popularity as a solo performer developed so quickly because, like Pete, he was not afraid
to try the less-famous songs which are now massive hits. Adam, who would never shy away from experimenting, produced a mid-year show Tenerife was crying out for - a tribute to Brit-Pop: Arctic Monkeys, Blur, Pulp, etc. And he didn’t stop there. Afternoons on acoustic guitar, winning local song-writing competitions, working in swing duos … is there be no end to this man´s arsenal of ability? I can tell you this much - Adam is working on a new project and it involves an expensive bass guitar and an even more expensive microphone. It may or may not have something to do with Beatles music. Watch this space.

Seductive taste for starters IF you are an epicurean, keep reading. If not, keep reading anyway because you will become one. To begin with, a brief introduction on who we are!
Prestigio y Tradicion or, to give us our English name, Prestige and Tradition, is our shop in Las Chafiras. We provide connoisseurs, the general public and fine restaurants with quality products and wines, which you can taste on our premises. The owner, Gerard, a Frenchman based for over 25 years in Tenerife, peruses through Spain and the Canary Islands to find exclusive treats from small vineyards, tiny productions and “crème de la crème” delicatessen. On one of his trips he discovered the Caraballas Bodega in Rueda. The vineyard’s director, Elias Redondo, believes in the natural wine-making process.
All his wine is stored the old-fashioned way, and he even sticks to the traditional way of pest control. There are no pesticides on Redondo’s Bodega - they use nature, via insects and different birds of prey. In fact, the finca has its own ecosystem. They have many varieties of wine, and this week we look at one of their special white wines. Caraballas BIO is made with grapes that have an organic agriculture. The verdejo Caraballas is “a wine of great capacity of expression that reflects in a faithful way the vineyard in which it was first dreamt.” Experts have described it as “a wine of seduction, with an un-
deniable personality”. The Caraballas BIO is a persistent wine with a complex after-taste, and drinking this Caraballas is a wholly sensorial experience. Its organic conditioning reflects the grower’s culture. The Bodega creates this wine with a crumpled and chilled grape which is deliberately pressed soft, with the grape cold. And it is this low temperature and soft pressing that allows the wine to get the very best out of the grapes. In Caraballas, they are committed to the natural fermentation of the wine. There is no yeast or modern, commercial nutrients. They trust the traditional process and quality of
their raw materials. This allows the finished nectar to develop into a wine with great power, intense bouquet, finesse and a hint of apricot and passion fruits. It produces a tasty, medium-bodied fresh note. Even the bottle impresses with its round, elegant shape, which is easy on the eye. Caraballas pairs beautifully with foie gras, white meat and fish, as well as poultry, plus fragrant rice and pasta dishes. Ideally, it is served between 8-10 degrees Celcius. Another important factor of this great ecological wine is that the natural process and ingredients means it is suitable for those who normally suffer from allergies. It is clean and pure, which should leave you with no headache or a slight hangover if you have that extra bottle. And the experts all agree on this wine. It has received 91 Parker points and 92 points on the Spanish rating. It is an award-winner as well, and among the
honours collected are: *Gold Medal Mundus Vini 2012 *Golden Leaf Best Wine ECO 2012 *Gold Medal Arrives of Duero 2012 *Silver Medal world challenge of Brussels 2012 *Bronze Decanter World Wine Awards 2012 It really is a special wine and one you have to sample. Our philosophy at Prestigio y Tradicion is for you to enjoy our facilities, discover this wine with us and savour the little treats to help enjoy it. You will also find this Caraballas in the following restaurants: Mirador de Los Abrigos, La Nonna Fina, Habibi, El Pupullo, El Escondite, La Mar De Vino and the New Yorker. By Val Sainsbury PEOPLE at low risk of heart disease are getting the “illusion of protection’ from statins” when they might be better off eating more nuts and olive oil. Patients should be told a healthy diet can give similar benefits to taking cholesterol-lowering drugs, they say. Three leading doctors argue in an editorial published in a respected medical magazine that “blanket prescribing” of statins could increase the harm from side-effects, while providing little benefit to patients newly-eligible for them. “Statins should not offer the illusion of protection that will enable many individuals to engage in unhealthy lifestyle behaviours,” says the editorial in Prescriber, the UK’s leading journal focusing on prescribing in medicines management. “Indeed, 80% of cardio-

Why doctors reject statins vascular disease is attributable to lifestyle factors, including an unhealthy diet, smoking and lack of physical activity. “For those individuals at low risk, it is clear that the benefits of statins are modest at best.” Alternatives to statins to, effectively, prevent heart attacks and strokes for those at low risk include eating an apple a day, a handful of nuts or four tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil daily. Tree nuts such as almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, some pine nuts, pistachios, and walnuts contain high levels of “good” fats, which can lower harmful fats in the bloodstream. The editorial’s authors are cardiologists Dr Aseem Malhotra and Dr Andrew Apps, with Simon Capewell, professor of clinical epidemiology and vice-president-elect of the faculty of public health.
They question recommendations to the NHS made last year, which make as many as four in 10 adults eligible for statins. Effectively, every healthy man over 60, and healthy woman over 65, could be offered drugs to cut their cholesterol levels. Those with high cholesterol, smokers, the obese or with a strong family history of heart problems, could be offered the drugs at an even younger age. Those supporting the guidance from Nice (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) said the drugs were cheap, getting cheaper, and thousands of lives would be saved. But a furore erupted, with some arguing the new approach was medicalising the prevention of heart disease when unhealthy lifestyles were often to blame. Figures suggest as many as eight million
Britons are on statins, at an estimated annual cost of £450 million. Doctors used to prescribe statins only to those with a 30% risk of a heart attack within the next decade, but this was cut to 20% risk in 2005. The bar was lowered further last year, so those who have a 10% or greater 10-year risk can be offered statins, including over 85s. A recent survey by doctors’ newspaper Pulse found two-thirds of GPs were rejecting the guidance. The British Medical Association said it had no confidence in it because there was “insufficient evidence” of overall benefit to low-risk patients. American experts last year warned that people on statins could be using them as an excuse to “put butter on their steaks”. A study research found patients on statins eat more fat and calories, and gain weight faster, than
people not taking them, possibly because they offer “false reassurance”. Although trial data shows a big reduction in death rates for those patients at high risk given statins after a heart attack, the advantages are less clear-cut for those at low risk. That’s the belief of Dr Malhotra, from the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. Dr Malhotra said: “For those individuals at low risk, it is clear that the benefits of statins are modest at best.” “They should not offer the illusion of protection that will enable many individuals to continue to engage in unhealthy lifestyle behaviours.” He said the blanket prescription of statins to those at low risk of heart disease should be replaced by “patient-centred information”, which would allow people to make more informed decisions. At present, scare-
Lick of paint can help you rent out property By Sue McDonald WITH the rental market so competitive at the moment, there is a wide choice of properties for potential renters. But what will make them choose your property over any other? Make sure you are showing your property to its
best advantage to ensure that yours is the one standing out in their minds. Firstly, they will be looking to see that the property is big enough for their purposes, and has all the basic facilities they need: well-equipped kitchen, decent bathroom, etc. But once these basic requirements are met, they
will then form an impression of the property, and whether they can picture themselves living there. This is what will distinguish yours from the others they have seen. It goes without saying that a thorough clean, and, possibly, a coat of paint, can make the world of difference to any property. The changes
I suggest here will obviously depend on the budget you have available, but even with limited resources, you can make a big difference. Take a good and brutally-honest look around the entrance. Is it neat and welcoming, or is it gloomy and cluttered? Sometimes, it is better to take out some furniture if it serves no useful purpose and is just taking up space. Check that the light fittings are clean, and powerful enough to light each area. In gloomy areas, install a mirror to reflect whatever natural light there is, and make the area appear bigger. But be careful not to situate a mirror at the foot of a staircase as this can be disorientating and cause accidents. In the lounge, arrange the furniture as you expect it to be grouped normally, often around the TV. Is the sofa reasonably comfortable
and serviceable? If not, consider replacing it. If the upholstery is a bit worn, think about using a throw to cover it over. If the curtains or blinds have seen better days, consider replacing them. This need not be expensive, and if you choose a colour that tones with the sofa, and add a couple of scatter cushions to match, the whole room will begin to take on a designer look. Do any pictures tone with the rest of the colour scheme? If you have too many pictures on the walls, this can look cluttered and make the room look smaller. Equally, a picture bearing no relation to the rest of the items in the room can look like an afterthought. If the room looks a bit bare, consider buying a rug, around which the furniture can be grouped, and this is another opportunity to introduce a bit of colour and style.
mongering is too common, with exaggeration of the benefits of statins or risks of coming off them, despite disabling side-effects. The editorial says randomised control trials may seriously under-estimate side-effects such as muscle pain. At least 17% of patients had an adverse effect in a large, uncontrolled, observational study, it says. Even Pfizer’s own patient leaflet on Lipitor (Atorvastatin) cites “common side-effects that may occur in up to one in 10 patients include sore throat, nausea, digestive problems, muscle and joint pain, and increase in blood sugar levels, says the editorial. Although most symptoms are reversed when patients stop taking the drugs, a risk of up to 1% of type 2 diabetes now directly attributed to statins should “not be dismissed lightly”. In the bedroom, make sure the beds look as good as they can, which means made up with clean sheets, and, if possible, with a coloured throw that should tone with whatever windowdressing you have. Again, make sure you install a mirror, either above a dressing table, or a full-length one on the wall. It’s practical, and it also makes the room look bigger. A picture to tone, usually over the bed, fills up space and ties all the colours together. There is little you can do with regard to the condition of the bathroom, except make sure that it is spotlessly clean, and smells nice (thanks to a plug-in air-freshener). You can introduce colour through a set of bath mats and a co-ordinating towel. In the kitchen, again, ensure that the lighting is adequate. The worktops should be clean, and relatively clear. If you have utensils stored there, think about putting hooks on the walls to keep the surfaces clear to make it look bigger. All in all, these commonsense tips should help your property look as good as it can do.

By Ruth Benson WOMEN have been borrowing styles from men for years. Jeans, for example, were originally worn by men as work clothes but eventually became everyday wear to be worn by both sexes.
Females have embraced the boyish look with over-sized jumpers, blazers and tuxedos. Last year saw the popularity of the flat shoes for women and this year, as last, it’s all about brogues. But what about men borrowing from women? We can all remember when David Beckham sported a sarong, but that really was that regarding men wearing what is, traditionally, women’s clothing. However, it is expected that women’s fashion
Men dig their high heels in for a change! will be adopted by men this autumn. According to Lauren Cochrane writing for the Guardian, “girlfriend dressing” is the next big thing for men. Heels are a must, and I’m not talking Cuban heels or cowboy boots. On Sunday night at the Saint Laurent show, more men wore heels than did women. Next, it’s all about the colour pink. They say it takes a true man to wear pink, but I think it is a great shade on men. Pink is associated with little girls and fairy princesses, but the catwalk shows by Astrid Anderson and Sibling couldn’t get enough of the colour. Now, I am struggling with this next one: the blouse! Gucci have teamed the blouse up with flares, as well as lots of lace and chiffon. The one item which has made the headlines is the skirt. This week, Rick Owens’ catwalk displayed the male
skirt, actually worn over trousers, so it’s not a mini or a line. It is more layered and actually very tasteful, Owens’ catwalk also hit the headlines - not for men wearing skirts but the skirts that actually displayed their anatomy, But I’m not saying this should or shouldn’t be how men wear skirts! The men’s fashion week not only embraced women’s fashion for men but also reincarnated an old favourite: flares. We all think of the Seventies when thinking of flared trousers – and now they’re back! In Gucci’s Milan show on Monday, they were hailed as the new shape. Both the Milan and Paris fashion shows have embraced the Seventies’ iconic clothing, with designers including Valentino and St Laurent including them on the catwalk. It seems that British designers also love the look, and flares will be seen on the high street in this year’s autumn/ winter collections. Topshop’s collection portrayed the era and seemed to have been influenced by the Bay City Rollers, with sheepskin coats and the heeled boots. Gordon Richardson, the group’s Creative Director, admitted it would take a while for men to introduce the style into their everyday wardrobes. But he insists it will happen. “The shift to flares, or at least to trousers that aren’t skinny jeans, is already being seen on women,” he said. “And that’s where the shift always starts as men see their partners looking brilliant in new shapes.” Garth Spencer, Fashion Director for magazine 10, feels it will be as much as five years before men fully embrace flares, with skinny jeans still remaining popular. But with celebrity women such as Jessie J, Lindsay Lohan and Jennifer Aniston spotted in them, I’m sure it won’t be long before men follow suit!

THE PORKY HAIR PIES!
By Carl from Robot
IT seems that I’m digging over old ground this week with what I have seen recently on TV and read in magazines.
The same old problem keeps rearing its ugly head and it’s you, the public, who are getting led up the garden path. It makes me so mad and frustrated to see and listen to the general rubbish presented to us in adverts that I can’t help but reiterate my thoughts. In my profession, I’ve always been taught to be honest - even if it’s not what the client wants to hear. I’d never sell a product to anyone, no matter how good, if I didn’t believe it would do what it says on the label. Yet along comes a new wave of adverts from those old favourite companies, who haven’t so much got your hair in mind but their bank balances. Recently, I heard a ridiculous suggestion on a TV advert about a new repairing masque that
states: “Your hair seems fuller and softer, as if repaired.” Now let’s analyse this statement, “seems fuller and softer”. The word “seems” implies that your hair will be better. Yet the “seems” means that it will look better, but not necessarily! This word is used to trick you into believing that your hair will be repaired. Trust me, it won’t be. If that were the case, it would say: “Your hair WILL be fuller and softer” … a genuine statement. Then there’s the “AS if repaired”. Now hold on - “as if repaired” means absolutely nothing, totally misguiding the public into thinking that this product will work. The same goes for the small print at the bottom of the screen. The next time there’s a hairproduct advert, don’t look at the images but the small words at the bottom. It clearly states that in some cases, 68% of users liked the product. This means that 32% DIDN’T! It’s there in black and white. Onethird of people tested didn’t like their product ...yet that’s not mentioned in the ad. I’ve yet to see a hair product advertised on TV which is natural and
Georgeous hair is the best revenge!
will do what it’s claiming to do. Most of what I see cause various problems, such as itchy scalp, sores, greasy hair, dryness, brittleness - and an artificial feel when wet, like a slimy film coating the hair. Need I go on? It’s about time these companies were made to reveal more about the claims they make. And not only that. They should reveal the testing carried out on hapless animals to give that artificial look to your hair. Without mentioning names, for legal reasons, did you know the biggest manufacturer of cosmetics is owned by the same people who make your breakfast cereals! Think about that the next time you’re applying one of their products, which is so full of artificial ingredients that you could clean your microwave with it. I know I’m going on, but it makes my job more difficult when I see hair literally falling off, and the client is using some concoction she bought while doing a general shop. Your hair is worth more than that, so the next time you are picking a shampoo or conditioner - or any styling product - think about where it’s from, what’s inside it and, most of all, don’t buy into the propaganda that’s labelled on it. If you need proof, just open your eyes and ears. These firms find a way to confuse you into buying whatever they dream up next to get your money.

Just fill the bucket before you kick it!
A FILM of a few years ago featured a couple of elderly men, played by Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, who met in a hospital ward.
They suffered from terminal illnesses and decided to compile a bucket list of places they wanted to see and things they wanted to do before they died. They visited The Taj Mahal and Pyramids, went sky-diving, drove a Mustang car, a motor-cycle on the Great Wall of China, flew over the North Pole and went on safari in Africa. As a result of the film, it became the “in” thing to compile a bucket list, especially with pensioners. It seems that people over 65 are not prepared to grow old gracefully ... or kick the bucket without the bucket having been well and truly filled with adventures first. This seems to me like the ultimate in New Year resolutions!
However, it can be easier said than done. Health and finances are usually the things prohibiting us from doing more than we do at present. I read recently that the 86-year-old father of William Hague, the Tory politician, completed the daring feat of wing-walking on a Boeing Stearman PT17 Kaydet. He said: “Sky-diving and wing-walking is something everyone should do before they kick the bucket!’ Bring it on! Mind you, he has to be the exception to the rule doesn’t he? And good luck to him! A recent survey in the UK by Centra Pulse, a company specialising in telecare alarms and helping pensioners live
independently with the help of technology, asking 2,000 people over the age of 65 to compile a list of must-dos. The results showed a real lust for travel in older people, with most listing it as their main goal. And when insurance company Engage Mutual asked younger people what their bucket list would be, travel also featured largely on their lists, particularly things like swimming with dolphins, riding a Harley Davidson on Route 66 and flying in a hot-air balloon. Time is on their side, of course, but for those whose ultimate ambition was to get a tattoo and in one case, own a Mulberry handbaghow sad! It’s a shame that so many older people never managed to realise their dreams when they were younger because of financial restraints and family commitments. But it’s not too late now if you can manage it. The top ten most
highly-rated to-dos on the pensioners’ bucket list included: *Travel the World *Live to 100 *Write a best-selling novel *Win the Lottery *See their family settled. *Fall in love * Learn a language. Some of those can definitely be grouped together. Winning the Lottery would certainly give your family financial security and see them settled. But you may well discover a whole lot more family than you originally thought you’d got! Living to 100 might just provide enough time to write that novel and to learn a language, if you’re anything like me, that is! And as for falling in love! Well, if you were a lottery winner you’d find plenty of love, but your family might not be too pleased! At the end of the day, it all comes down to finance and health. Many pensioners are hard-pressed to be able
to afford five days with Shearings, let alone an exotic holiday destination. And as for doing something exertive, getting out of bed is often the ultimate exercise in many cases. It would seem that finding the balance between financial security to ensure that your retirement years are comfortable, while making sure that life is lived and experienced fully according to your circumstances, is the most many of us can hope for. But we could compile a much more do-able bucket list, couldn’t we? A young man from Cheltenham decided to do a good deed every single day in 2013 in memory of a dear friend who’d died of cancer. He compiled a ‘good deed blog’ and started on New Year’s Day. Many of his good deeds involved his elderly neighbours, whom he helped by taking their bins out, or running errands. But he also baked cakes for his work colleagues, bought meals for complete strangers simply because they were stood next to him in McDonalds, or petrol for those waiting to pay in the filling station queue. His activities earned him praise from many quarters, but also scepticism from those who thought he must have
ulterior motives - and even Internet trolls’ maliciousness! But it makes you realise that bucket lists could actually be different, and more affordable, from the usual ones. So consider: *Day-trips to see parts of Britain you’ve always meant to visit, even if you’re on a short visit “back home”. *Coach fares are cheap enough, and do the pensioner thing of taking sandwiches and a flask! *Take advantage of the local bus services or day trips if you’re living in the Canary Islands,. *Look out for neighbours who are on their own and may be desperately lonely. *Read a book every month. You can buy them on line or from local community centres. There is an excellent one in Calleo Salvaje which I visit when I’m in Tenerife. And some bars display books left by holiday-makers. *Become a “silver surfer” or learn a language. There are classes in many areas. Consult local newspapers like Canarian Weekly. *Volunteer at schools to help children with their reading. *Above all, do something! Give the bucket a kick while there is still time! A Very Happy New Year - a bit belated, I know - to all my readers!

Pitbull marches into Army! WE have had a really busy week, with a surprisingly high number of adoptions for this time of year.
They include a gorgeous pitbull, who seemed destined to a life in the refuge. But he has been sent to join the Spanish Army in the North of the Island, following in the “pawsteps” of two other Accion dogs. New-Look Scruffy Protection Civil has still been arriving daily at the refuge with as many as 12 dogs each time, in various conditions, like the scruffy dog pictured far right. Where to find us The refuge is situated at the Granadilla Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to the ecological park featuring the windmills. Opening times We are open to the public Monday, Tuesday,Thursday, Friday between 2-5pm, and Saturdays from 1-4pm. The refuge is closed Wednesdays, Sundays and on public holidays.
Brave Tamo deserves a home TAMO, a sevenyear-old blind dog, was last year found hanging from a motorway bridge in the North.
As if that were not bad enough, when rescued he was found to have been mutilated with an axe, his ears and tail brutally cut. He has since been in a foster home in the North and has been treated for his injuries, and also heartworm, by the Refugio Internacional in Puerto de la Cruz and ourselves at Live Arico. Now he is good to go, so between us we are
trying to find a special home for this very special dog. We are told that despite everything, he has a lovely temperament but, being blind, he will obviously need owners with patience and time. Could that be you? For more information, call Sue on 629 388 102. Adopt don´t buy! Every dog bred or bought takes away the chance of happiness from a dog like Tamo. Whale and Dolphin trip We have chartered the Mustcat catamaran on Sunday, 21st February, and we’ll be having a private party from 2.30pm, sailing from Las Galletas.
If you are bothered by the thought of whales and dolphins being kept in captivity and performing tricks for food, come out with us and see them in their natural environment. Tickets cost 20 euros, including drinks, for the three-hour excursion, which is less than half the normal price. A donation from the proceeds will be made to Sea Shepherd, to recognise the outstanding work they do to preserve our oceans and marine life. Fun doggie weekend As we told you last week, our dog show is now a weekend event, starting on Saturday,
7th March, with a basic obedience course from 3pm, along with an “Ask the Vet” session. This will be followed at noon the next day by our Fun Dog Show, in collaboration with San Miguel Town Hall. Both events will be held next to the Cultural Centre at Llano del Camello. It’s just two euros to enter your pooch, so come and have an enjoyable afternoon with us. As our last dog show was so successful, we have added a fancy dress category, which should be fun. For more info on both events, call Sue on 629 388 102.

Legal Matters
By Mariano Zunino Siri
WHEN you buy an apartment or unit which is part of a complex, you are also buying a quota or percentage of the whole site.
You are buying a property that belongs to a Horizontal Division, and every owner has the right to use the common areas, and is obligated to contribute to the maintenance of these areas, according to his percentage. This is regulated by the Horizontal Division Law (or Horizontal Division Act). The Law says: “An assessment quota shall be allocated to every unit in relation to the value of the building and expressed as a percentage of said value. “Said quota shall
30th January -5th February 2015
Horizontal Division ...rights and duties
serve as a coefficient to determine individual unit shares in the expenses and benefits of the community…” And also: “Individual unit owners can freely dispose of their estate, provided constituent elements are not separated and transferred enjoyment does not affect the obligations arising out of this ownership system.” When the developer builds a complex, he normally grants a Deed of New Work, stating that on the plot there will be a development (once the municipal licence or building licence is granted). If the development is divided into different units, then the Deed may also include a Horizontal Division. The developer later sells units to different buyers, which means that instead of one owner, there will be many
of them comprising the community of owners (comunidad de propietarios). According to the Law: “The declaration of ownership of individual units in a multipleunit building (“Deed of Horizontal Division” or “Título Constitutivo”)
will describe each unit, in addition to the building as a whole, and each unit shall be correlatively numbered including its size, boundaries, floor where it is located and such appurtenances as garage space, attic or basement. The same
document will establish the assessment quota corresponding to each unit as stated, either by the sole owner of the building at the time sale of units was initiated or by agreement of all existing unit owners…” There would be two types of rights of the owners: full ownership on the unit bought (apartment) and participation within the common areas (stairs, lifts, alleys, gardens) and the contribution to their maintenance (obligation). The full ownership right has limits, as the Law says: “Owners of individual units may modify the architect elements, installations or services of their unit, notifying the community representative provided such work does not alter the safety of the building, its overall structure, its external appearance or condition, or prejudice the rights of another
unit owner.” Summarising: owners of an apartment have the right to use their property freely, vote in the Annual General Meeting of the community of owners and use the common areas. But, at the same time, they have duties. Among them is the contribution to the maintenance of the common areas (periodical payment fee to the community of owners) and the respect of such common areas. The rules of the community of owners are regulated by its Statutes and the Law, which includes not only the rights and obligations of the owners but also the way to govern the community: President, VicePresident, Secretary, Administrator. But this exceeds the contents of this article. In future columns, I will return to this matter.

Sudoku X...
Just enter the numbers 1 - 9 once in each row, column and 3 x 3 square within the sudoku X puzzle grid. In addition to standard sudoku, the numbers must only occur once in each side of the ‘X’ that is marked on the grid.
Charles walks over a railway-bridge. At the moment that he is just ten meters away from the middle of the bridge, he hears a train coming from behind. At that moment, the train, which travels at a speed of 90 km/h, is exactly as far away from the bridge as the bridge measures in length. Without hesitation, Charles rushes straight towards the train to get off the bridge. In this way, he misses the train by just four meters! If Charles had rushed exactly as fast in the other direction, the train would have hit him eight meters before the end of the bridge.

On the first day, the snail reaches a height of 5 meters and slides down 4 meters at night, and thus ends at a height of 1 meter. On the second day, he reaches 6 meters, but slides back to 2 meters. On the third day, he reaches 7 meters, but slides back to 3 meters. On the fifteenth day, he reaches 19 meters, but slides back to 15 meters. On the sixteenth day, he reaches 20 meters, so now he is at the top of the pit! Conclusion: The snail reaches the top of the pit on the 16th day!

Cervera’s last stand
By Roscoe
CD Tenerife 0 Ponferradina 1 FANS protested at the start of the match, the atmosphere was hostile and at the end of the game, nobody was surprised that Tenerife had been turned over by an average side.
I’ve written this a few times over the years; No club does a better job of shooting itself in the foot. If I were the owner of Tenerife, I would ask every fan this one question. “What do you expect from the team this season?” Most would say: “To stay in this division.” This team haven’t been in the relegation zone for months. Most fans the world over say “Play the kids”. Manager Alvaro Cervera has blooded 11 Ten-
erife lads in the last two years, even though Alan Hansen was right about not winning things with kids. All fans want their club to be financially secure. The Tenerife debt has been greatly reduced over the last few years. The current wage budget is one of the smallest in the division and, because of this, it’s hard for them to entice players to relocate 1,000 kilometres. So what’s the problem here? Ahh yes, the lack of attractive football. Cervera feels that the best way for Tenerife, with the current waferthin squad and the players at his disposal, is to play tight. Only Real Betis and Llagostera (two stunning free-kicks) have scored more than once against us since Bonfire Night. The fans and the Canarian media need to be careful what they wish for. Alvaro Cervera has done a fine job in charge of the team over the last two-and-a-half years. Promotion, consolidation and considerably continuity.
Footballers are always the first to moan when things are going wrong, but the Tenerife squad, to a man, are right behind the boss. How could changing the manager possibly make it any better? This is the squad which will take us to the end of the season: 20 long matches. There is harmony on the training pitch, respect in the dressing room, and it’s not as if the players aren’t trying their best. The fans need to suck it up and get behind the manager. Our manager. The man who masterminded the win over Las Palmas in September, and the stunning derby victory 14 months ago. And one other thing. Name me somebody who would do a better job? One name. England fans clambered for Harry Redknapp to be England manager a few years ago. Few Derby followers wanted Steve McClaren to replace Nigel Clough, and I’ve a feeling Newcastle will regret letting Alan Pardew go. I’m sure you’ve seen
how quickly he has turned Crystal Palace around. Mark Cooper was not exactly the fans’ first choice when he took over at Swindon. But he has taken them top of League One (I wonder if he will be in the dugout at the Heliodoro one day). Fans are the lifePosition
blood of every team, but I will bet 99.999% of them have never spent a minute doing any aspect of running a club, or even being involved at any level. Tomorrow’s trip to Albacete could be Cervera’s last in charge, and the Gods have dealt him a horror hand.
Javi Moyano is suspended, Jorge was injured playing for Spain’s Under-19s in the week and Diego Ifran is rated doubtful. However, new signing Juan Carlos Real is available, and there is every chance Asdrubal will be signed from Las Palmas in time to make the trip.

Top Training just the job for high-flying Swindon! TENERIFE is a popular destination for warmweather training and the cold snap in the UK has seen a number of sporting sides jetting here for some sunshine.
Tenerife Top Training, in La Caleta, is the first choice for professional football and rugby teams. Last year, Everton enjoyed the facilities and Bundesliga outfit Stuttgart trained at 3T a couple of weeks ago. Rugby’s Super League side Warrington Wolves have also been put through their paces recently and last week-
end, League One leaders Swindon Town pitched up. They stayed for four days and Canarian Weekly watched their first training session. Manager Mark Cooper told us: “It’s been impossible to train on our frozen pitches so, since we had a free weekend, we decided to come here.
“It’s ideal, and the facilities are top-drawer. It’s nice to get the lads away, and we can do some proper work.” Mark is a regular visitor to Tenerife as his parents live here. His father is Leeds United legend Terry Cooper, who was watching the training sessions keenly. For Swindon Chairman Lee Power, it was
his first Tenerife visit for a generation. He told us: “I came here once back in 1994 with Norwich. It was a bit different then! We came over for a couple of days and let our hair down a fair bit. “Not that I remember too much about it! But this place (3T) is amazing. It’s just what Mark
and the coaches wanted, and the players will enjoy the training in the sunshine.” Swindon were one of the favourites for relegation at the start of the season. They have one of the league’s lowest budgets and the playing squad is the Football League’s youngest.
But they are flying high and, with most of the tricky fixtures out of the way, promotion is theirs for the taking. “I’d love us to come back in the summer for pre-season,” said Mark. “Maybe we can get a friendly match in as well.” Photos: Sir Old Golfer

Vikings go overboard! THE John Lowe team handicap really is a great competition, full of last-gasp drama and upsets.
Of the eight ties played last Friday, five went down to a finalgame showdown, and the results leave five teams from Division 2, one from Division 1 and just two from the Premier league in the hat for the semifinals. Biggest upset on the night, possibly, came at Vikings Ensecan, where
the hosts were sunk by Division 2 outfit The Palms. A 255-point head start was put to good use by Dale and his gang as they squeaked through to the trophy semis by the odd leg. In the same half of the competition, Waterfall claimed a win over league rivals Chipeque Chippers, while Marilyns beat Division 1 one side, Gaffers A, also 4-3. The biggest handicap faced by any team was Phoenix Bar’s 390-pointer at home to Spear Chuckers. The
hosts made light work of that in the first two rubbers, as Bubbles, then Mitch notched for the home team. But, this only spurred on the Chuckers and, fuelled by lashings of Ron Miel, they quickly went 3-2 up. But the rum and honey went a bit sour on them as they failed to win another leg, and a rather surprised Phoenix Bar booked their place in the last four. In the plate, or the losers cup as we call it, there was another giant-killing feat as The Rebels, from Division 2,
faced Bar 180 B of the Premier League. A 270-point deficit is a lot to overcome, and it doesn’t help when your opponent (Walter) checks out on 123. A 5-2 victory for The Rebels then, but they won’t be the lowest-ranked team in the semis. That honour will go to Barracuda Hunters who also beat higher league opposition in the shape of Division one 1 Sundowners. Their 4-3 win went down to the very last leg, and the very last dart! The other two ties in the Plate saw the win-

Eric’s golf day hits the target! LOS Palos hosts the Eric Bristow Golf Day tomorrow morning (Saturday), and the par 3 course will be buzzing for the now-annual event, which raises money for San Miguel Lions Club.
Oasis Fm sponsors the event, and there will be updates throughout the day on the radio. Bristow, the five-time world darts champion and a regular to Tenerife, is delighted the day is fully booked. “It’s going to be a great
event and I’ve been looking forward to this for ages,” he said. “It’s a bit of fun, everyone will enjoy themselves and we can raise a few bob for charity. Lovely.” The competition comprises teams of four playing a Stableford tournament. This means that all players have a chance to score points on every hole. A birdie gets them three points, a par is two points and a bogey scores one. A hole-inone would be a fourpoint boost. There are nearest-thepin holes on the 1st and 9th holes - and a special five-euro forfeit for the
charity bucket if you manage to hit the water! The presentation and raffle draw will be held in Shambles Bar, in Los Cristianos, and the shotgun start is just after 8am. Everyone is welcome to watch, buy some raffle tickets, take some pictures and have fun. Eric, the I’m a Celebrity star, will be joined by old darts rival John Lowe, and they will also be taking part in a special exhibition on Sunday. Bamboo Bar hosts and the action begins at 1.30pm. Terrific Terrace hit top Greer!
THE Direct Telecom Pool League never ceases to amaze, and this week saw some excellent matches - and a fine shock.
For a few weeks, Division One has looked as though it were Gaffers A to lose. But on Tuesday they dropped points at home against a determined Terrace Bar B. And it could have been much worse had Terrace Bar’s Chris not knocked in the black too early in the final frame with the away team 6-5 up. This gave Gaffers a point, but they were pushed all the way by the Terrace boys. Their fine performance included Greer sevenballing Neil from the break. This result has opened the door for defending champions Tenerife Hammers A, who are in second spot. They made sure they took advantage of Gaffers’ slip, as they hosted Dreamers A. The Los Cristianos team are normally strong in the second half of the season, and they had their chances. Tommy lost a frame he should have won
against Fritzel, while Jambo produced two worldy shots to steal frames. Hammers closed out a 8-4 victory which was closer than it looked and are now just four points off top spot with a game in hand. The Phoenix, looking to secure the third place, found the going tough against Tony and the lads from Tenerife Hammers C, with home advantage counting for nothing. Harry and his team tried to get their noses in front, but every time they did, the Hammers hit back. Phoenix rallied in the middle set and, at 5-2, they looked home and hosed. But Kev was having one of those nights and lost all his three frames. He lost to Ken and Tony, while Paul and Sergio were also chinned. It needed Harry, their Captain Fantastic, to beat Ken and earn a draw. Inn the Pink A’s hopes of a top-three finish took a hit as they travelled to Treehouse A, who also have a high finish in sight. Both teams are fairly evenly-matched, but Pink had a rare offnight - maybe a little altitude sickness high up in Chayofa? Jay and Mark were in

Towards the bottom of the table, Palms Bar A made light work of Exiles B, with captain Roscoe and Penguin in fine form, each winning three frames. As much as the away team tried, it was just one of those nights, with the home team rarely missing a pot. The three points ensured that Palms A remained in the top half of the table. Waterfall Rebels, hav-
ing been going well recently, came up against difficult opponents in the Peacocks. Rebels were hoping to move up the table but couldn’t take advantage. Peacocks are trying to avoid a relegation struggle and will be pleased with a point from the drawn match. Bottom team Terrace Bar A, who just can’t put a run of form together, were no match for Phoenix Potters. Although Terrace took the first two games, Mal came to the table and looked a shadow of his former self. Normally confident and cocksure, he hasn’t won a game since 2014 - and it shows. Unfortunately, it is bringing his team-mates down as well. His loss meant they lost eight games in a row as Potters celebrated their win. In Division Two, Sporting Jester A are looking more and more likely to win the title as they are now nine points clear of nearest rivals Bluebell A. They took on Gaffers B, who have promotion dreams themselves but couldn’t match their rivals, the Jesters winning 8-4.

The game was close, but the home team had enough class to get over the line. James Place, also in the hunt for promotion after going close last season, suffered a setback after travelling to Picasso’s A. There was some excellent pool played, and James Place may feel that a draw would have been fair, but it was not to be. Inn the Pink B, who are also playing well, have three games in hand over Bluebell A in second spot. If they win all three, they will move
above them. Firstly, though, they had to beat Treehouse B. And after taking early frames, the result was never in doubt as they soon closed the game out. Waterfall Jokers have had a fine first season. They have improved month on month, yet they were made to dig deep to get past Fat Nick’s Tenerife Pool Tables team. In this league, the difference between and win and a draw is massive, and in the end it was a good three points for the Jokers. The draw has been made for the next round of the Tenerife Pool Tables Cup and the first round of the Plate.

Premier League preview By Adi Benson I’M not sure the return to Premier League action will prove to be anywhere near as exciting as last weekend’s FA Cup fixtures.
It has been said that the cup lost its magic when Manchester Utd pulled out a few years ago to play some pointless games in Brazil. But that ghost has been laid to rest, especially last Saturday thanks to some excellent matches and some genuine giantkilling results. It means that one or two Premier League teams will be looking to shake off an FA Cup hangover this weekend. Chelsea already did that by clinching a Wembley final on Tuesday against Liverpool. But Man City will be itching to put one over them at Stamford Bridge to narrow the gap at the top again. Hull v Newcastle Hull had a weekend off and will hope their players come back nice and refreshed because they desperately need a result from this game as they look to drag themselves out of the relegation places. Like their opponents, Newcastle have also benefited from a break and at least they know who is going to be running the show. They have appointed John Carver, a Tenerife
regular, as boss until the end of the season, so they can at least start to move forward. But for me, they’re effectively saying: !We give up on this season.” Prediction: Home win Crystal Palace v Everton The Alan Pardew effect seems to have kicked in at Palace, who are now on a decent run of form. They have bought Sanogo in, on loan from Arsenal and, together with Chamakh (also from Arsenal); they have forged a good partnership up front. They did well against Southampton in the Cup, scoring three goals between them. Everton are a place above them, but on goal difference only, and they really need to do better in the final months of the season. It’s been a poor campaign. They need points and they need them quickly before they get dragged into a relegation dogfight. Prediction: Home win Liverpool v West Ham The Reds will welcome Daniel Sturridge back for this game, hoping he can hit the ground running and get back among the goals. Raheem Sterling has been playing as a false No.9, but he does not have the composure in front of goal and this has left Liverpool lacking. They are on a good unbeaten run in the League but have played out too many draws. West Ham have a couple of Liverpool old boys who will be planning to prove a point, and nobody can argue with the form of Stewart Downing. this season. He’ll provide
the crosses for the everimproving Andy Carroll, who’ll be after a goal on his return to Anfield. This could be a fine contest. Prediction: Home win Man Utd v Leicester The hosts will be looking for revenge after suffering defeat the first time these two teams met in the league. They will need to step up their game as they appear toothless in attack, considering the money spent, and the players they have at their disposal. Van Gaal still doesn’t appear to know his best X1 and the fans are starting to get frustrated. Leicester showed some fight to come from behind in the Cup to beat Spurs, and they will need plenty more in this game. Ulloa was back in the goals and, if he reproduces his early-season form, he could help them pull off an escape act. Interestingly, Leicester have won only once in the League since they beat United! Prediction: draw Stoke v QPR Stoke, looking to cement a top-10 finish, are difficult to beat at home. They are confident coming off the back of a straightforward Cup win, albeit against Rochdale, but that came at a price. Bojan has really found his feet in the Premiership and his skill and goals are proving invaluable to Stoke’s season, He has certainly been a breath of fresh air in the Potteries, but he is now out for the season with a nasty knee injury. The Hoops are still
looking for their first point on the road this season. Charlie Austin has been in good scoring form, but he will have his work cut out against a tight defence. That said, QPR have to break their away duck at some stage. Prediction: Away win Sunderland v Burnley This won’t be a game for purists, with both sides looking to move away from the bottom three. Gus Poyet at Sunderland is great when they get results, full of how his tactics work. But he’s quick to shift blame when they don’t win, and for me this is destabilising the team. He needs Defoe to start scoring goals! Burnley have been resilient in recent games and have shown enough to avoid relegation. But they need to hang on to Danny Ings in the transfer window. If he and Sam Vokes can reestablish their goals’ partnership from last season, the Clarets should stay up. Prediction: Away win West Brom v Spurs Tony Pulis hasn’t quite got the same task as he had with Crystal Palace last season, but he will need all his fighting skills at West Brom to keep them safe. They are just three points above relegation but, depending on results, could get dragged back this weekend, so they need a big performance against Spurs. It was
nice to see Anichebe scoring and if he and Berahino can work together, anything is possible. Spurs again need to dust themselves down after a poor Cup showing to keep in the hunt for fourth spot. Wins are now vital, but their problem is still goals and, with not long to go now until the transfer window closes, will they have time to bring in another striker? Prediction: Away win Chelsea v Man City Chelsea will know that victory will see them take a big step towards the Premier League title because it would open up an eight-point gap over their rivals. They showed their grit as they sneaked past Liverpool to reach the League Cup Final, but that came after a shocker at home to Bradford. City were poor against Arsenal in the league and then Middlesbrough in the Cup. The defence has been a joke and is a major worry. Even Vincent Kompany is looking sloppy. But for me, they still have the best squad in the Premier League and they should have a real go at Chelsea. This is a must-win match. But will Frank Lampard play? Prediction: Draw Arsenal v Aston Villa Arsenal are looking confident, with their swagger returned. They
are welcoming Walcott and Ozil back from injury and both players showed what they are capable of against Brighton last weekend. They look dangerous, but there are still question marks over their defence. Villa managed two goals in a game against Bournemouth and a win, but you feel they will be bought back to earth with a bump. Defensively, they are weak, and you know Sanchez will tear them apart. They must keep it tight and not concede early. Prediction: Home win S’hampton v Swansea The longer the season goes on, the more you feel Southampton have a chance of staying in the top four. They have got results this season on the back of a solid defence, but they showed cracks against Palace, losing in the Cup. This needs to be addressed, and you can be sure Koeman will have worked on this in training. Swansea are all over the place, and a poor result at Blackburn, with two red cards, will have dented their confidence. They need to get over the loss of Bony and quickly if their slide is to be halted. What looked like a challenge for a Europe League place has now turned into a challenge for a top-10 place. Prediction: Home win
