Podemos poses genuine threat to establishment Continued from front

The anti-establishment political party Podemos, formed just a year ago, genuinely believes it can overthrow Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) government this year. And for the first time, the polls suggest their dream could become a reality.

A major poll by the Centre for Sociological Studies (CIS) shows that Podemos would collect nearly 24% of the vote. This makes them the country’s secondmost-popular party ahead of the official PSOE opposition. They would poll 22.2% with Mariano Rajoy’s ruling Popular Party currently standing at 27.2%. The gap held by the PP over Podemos is a little over 3%, and most political commentators feel the unthinkable could now happen. It’ has just happened in Greece with the antiausterity party Syriza surging to power and, to a lesser degree, the rise of UKIP in the UK shows that traditional parties have a lot of work to do. There is no doubt that Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias has struck a note with ordinary Spaniards, who have been turning their back on politics in the wake of a series of scandals. Marian Rajoy is seen to have done a good job with the economy, but Iglesias believes even more can be done for the common man. Over the last six months, the party has picked up support and recently, there has been a feeling that they could pull off the greatest upset in Spanish political history. And that belief was strengthened with the mammoth Podemos weekend rally in down-

town Madrid, which attracted up to 300,000 people, depending on the source. EL Pais, Spain’s leading daily newspaper, calculated the crowd to be around 153,000 at 1pm on Saturday, while police put the number at 100,000 and Podemos claimed at least 300,000 were there. Podemos, formed in January 2014 and led by the pony-tailed Iglesias, stunned the Spanish political establishment in the European elections four months later by securing 1.2 million votes and five seats, with a campaign budget of just 150,000 euros. Now, the party is reaching for the moon, and Podemos officials said on Monday that their anti-austerity movement and campaign to win the general election had been galvanised as a result of the rally. Officials began their campaign for this year’s local, regional and national races by organising the rally in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol, where Iglesias demanded a break “from the old political guard”. Thousands marched from Cibeles square to Puerta del Sol, the same place where the

Indignados protest movement began in May 2011. Many chanted “ticktock, tick-tock” as they marched, in reference to Iglesias’s prediction that the rally would begin the countdown to the end of Rajoy’s government, and with it his reign as Prime Minister. Despite their satisfaction over the huge turn-out, some Podemos leaders acknowledged on Monday that the party might not be able to make a clean sweep in all local and regional elections. For example, the race for regional premier next month in Andalusia - expected to be the sternest of tests for Podemos - will be difficult. Luis Alegre, Podemos secretary for internal participation, conceded in a SER radio interview that his party would probably not be able to wrest power from the Andalusia Socialists, who have governed there for 25 years. But he was confident his group would take the elections in Madrid, Valencia and Asturias. “Andalusia is just around the corner, and we need to develop our platform there,” he

said, referring to the early elections called for 22nd March by Socialist premier Susana Díaz. “We don’t expect to take over the government in all of Andalusia during these elections.” In his address at Saturday’s rally, 36-yearold Iglesias insisted the primary objective was to defeat Rajoy and his PP in November. “We begin this year with new things,” he said. “This is a year of change, and we are going to defeat the PP in the elections.” Iglesias reminded his supporters about the 25th January take-over in Greece by anti-austerity party Syriza. Podemos secretary Alegre, in his radio interview, said he did not see the rally as a “selfdetermination” initiative. It was, he said, a calling from a social majority in Spain demanding “a major role in politics” and changes to institutions that serve only “a privileged minority”. Other than drumming up support for the movement, no specific demands were made on the Rajoy government at the gathering. The view that “change was possible” was repeated

often. Iglesias was accompanied by fellow party officials Íñigo Errejón, Carolina Bescansa, Juan Carlos Monedero, Irene Montero and Alegre. “We have protested enough without anyone bothering to listen to us,” said Podemos No.2 Errejón. “We are here to celebrate that, in 2015, people are going to regain their sovereignty, and the people are going to win back their country.” Iglesias said Spaniards had “quixotic dreams, but we take them very seriously.” On Sunday, Socialist leader Pedro Sánchez rejected the idea that Podemos had the capacity to govern the country. “It is not the crisis that has abandoned the people but the centre-right,” he said during the PSOE regional convention in Valencia. Sánchez reiterated that the Socialists were the only true leftist force in the nation, and that the only rival they recognised was the PP. Socialist Finance Minister Cristóbal Montero, who last week announced that inspectors would investigate the past earnings of Monedero as a consultant, said on Monday

that Podemos formed part of the “radical left, no matter how much it tries to disguise itself ”. He also asked its leaders if they were not “embarrassed” about being radicals. In another development, right-wing union Manos Limpias announced that it was filing a public prosecution complaint in a Madrid court against Monedero. The complaint was about money Monedero supposedly earned from the Venezuelan and other Latin American governments while on the public payroll. Miguel Bernard, secretary general of Manos Limpias, said Monedero alleged extra earnings of 425,150 euros as a consultant, while also teaching at Madrid Complutense University (UCM), in violation of public administration laws. Monedero, who accused Montero of going after him because of his role in Podemos, said he was not afraid. Controversial, certainly. But the party’s name translates as “we can” and, after just a year in opposition to the two main parties, “we can” might well become “we will”.

Tourism has Rajoy drooling

MARIANO Rajoy has underlined the importance and value of Spain’s tourism sector, which now generates one in nine jobs.

The Spanish Prime Minister said at last week’s opening of the country’s Global Tourism Forum: “The tourism sector is grounds for us all to feel proud. “Its history is a success story we have not only known how to maintain, but also how to continually update.” The event, an international tourism show held at the Madrid Trade Fair Centre, is organised by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. The most important figures in the world of economics and tourism are invited to analyse and evaluate the tremendous impact this sector has on generating wealth for a country. It was a preliminary forum to the coun-

try’s 35th International Trade Fair (FITUR), which ended on Sunday. Rajoy said: “Talking about the tourism sector in Spain means talking about record figures.” And he was backed up by current statistics. In 2014, Spain - including Tenerife and the other Canary Islands - welcomed 4.3 million more inbound tourists than the previous year, representing year-on-year growth of 7.1%. In total, 65 million tourists came to Spain

last year. and spent more than 63 billion euros - an increase of 6.5% on 2013. Rajoy added: “In other words, more are coming. They are spending more and our revenue is rising. “Tourism is a strategic sector for the present and for the future of our economy, so the Government’s commitment to this sector is both desired and obligatory.” The Prime Minister, spelled out the “efforts made by his government to offer visible support

to the sector”, which included: the Comprehensive Tourism Plan, the Coastal Act, the decision not to increase tourism VAT and the labour-market reform. He stressed that the tourism industry would also benefit from the new regulations being drawn up, such as the Market Unity Act. “The aim of all these actions is to consolidate the destination of Spain as a global leader, he said. “In terms of tourist destination, we are the

second leading country in the world for revenue from inbound tourism, and third in the number of inbound tourists.” . That, he added, was as a result of the competitiveness of Spain’s companies, the safety of the country, the guarantee of public services, being in the vanguard in terms of transport and the competence of professionals there. Rajoy also told delegates: “The industry has contributed to opening up the path to growth. “That is why the companies that comprise the sector are now called upon to capitalise the new scenario of the Spanish reality. It’s a scenario of farewell to the crisis and welcoming the consolidation of the recovery.” Spanish economy will grow by more than 2% this year and, as the PM pointed out: “It’s healthy, balanced growth based on solid foundations. Spain has gone from being a country with a very unsure future to heading up

the forecasts in Europe, according to data published by the European Commission.” He added: “Spain has hit the change switch because it is at the gates to a new cycle of growth and job creation.” The most hopeful aspect of this change, he said, relates to job creation because between 2014 and 2015, one million more Spaniards will have managed to find a job. “This figure, of economic importance, is the soundest basis of our public services, social policies and a Welfare State, which are unanimously admired by the millions of tourists who visit us, year after year.” Taleb Rifai, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), accompanied by David P Scowsill, President and head of the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), presented Rajoy with an open letter to join the Global Leaders for Tourism Campaign.

Alzheimer’s centre opens ADEJE has always had a commitment to providing for those less fortunate than others, and this week, Council officials again showed they are as good as their word.

A new community centre, dedicated to those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, was officially opened by Mayor Fraga. The centre will give support to those suffering not just from Alzheimer’s but also to people with other disabilities. It promises also to provide support for families and friends of those affected. The centre, funded jointly by Adeje Council and Tenerife Cabildo, is part of the Island-wide network of social services, hand-in-hand with the AFATE association, and those councils who have expressed an interest in taking part. The Adeje centre will care for those with mildmoderate levels of dementia, and will have three qualified professionals in there from 9am to 1pm, MondayFriday, caring for up to 30 residents of the borough. As well as offering professional attention for those who are ill, the unit will also offer family services and support. Interested families can request inclusion through the offices for senior citizens in Adeje Cultural Centre, even

though age will not be a factor in the allocation of places. The Adeje Mayor expressed his satisfaction with the initiative, saying: “It will meet a real need in our society, and give our residents in Adeje a resource that is important and essential. “Alzheimer’s disease is a concern, not just for the patient but for families of that patient. And now we can count upon professionals who can assist in the control of the illness and assistance for families. “It will free them somewhat from the pressures they often find themselves under, and offer professional advice on treatment.” Cabildo Councillor Aurelio Abreu said: “The Adeje project will be part of the island-wide

social services network, which we in the Cabildo are helping to install. These are services which, until now, were only available in the city zone. With this programme, we have the chance to create 14 centres throughout the entire Island, which is a source of enormous satisfaction. For the 2,500 people on the waiting list for care, AFATE has found this intermediate solution, which are these centres that can help families.” Aurelio Abreu also mentioned “the magnificent work Adeje Social Services is doing, and Adeje was actually one of the boroughs most interested in requesting insertion into this island-wide network”. She added: “We will now be able to expand

More jobs in Tenerife THERE has been some cheer for the Spanish Government this week with some positive unemployment figures.

The number of people seeking work in the Canaries was down by 939, compared with December, and the January figures represent a fall of 5.9% year on year. Figures from the Ministry of Employment and Social Security showed that the number of unemployed stood at

259,743. Of this total, 137,837 are in Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. There are 121,906 people seeking work in Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro. It has been a hard year for Spain on the jobs front and the number out of work has risen in most regions. In fact, just three autonomous communities in Spain actually saw a decline last month compared with a year ago. Along with the Canaries, Extremadura saw a drop of 1,113,

while there were 494 fewer people out of work in the Balearic Islands. There are now nearly 4.5 million people out of work on mainland Spain, and that number has been creeping up over the last few months. February and March are often good months for the figures because seasonal and sales staff are often required before the country takes another jobs hit - until the summer season starts at the end of June.

the services on offer in Adeje to attend to illness such as Parkinson’s, plus those who are deaf, who need assistance in learning sign language, etc.” Inmaculada Rodrígu, technical director of AFATE, was delighted with the Adeje installations. “This is a mar-

vellous centre and the council have done all that is needed to adapt the space to meet the required needs,” she said. “We hope that shortly, we can begin to use it for that purpose. Our team are ready, and we are beginning to contact families here. And any

family who would like to avail of the service can ask to be included now.” She added: “This unit will be geared towards those who have any kind of dementia in low to moderate stages. We won’t just treat persons with dementia, but also those suffering from mild cognitive impairment who might currently find themselves in limbo, with no one to turn to. “We are here to help and, where possible, to avoid in the medium term that their condition progresses to dementia.” The director of AFATE said: “We want to stress that this is an integrated service, as we are attending to persons in all aspects that are relevant - physical, mental, using physiotherapy, logopedia, psychology, occupational therapy and basic care and attention. “We also will be working with families, providing assistance and information, as well as home and centre-based assessment.”

Carnival Princess crowned, and so is the Senior Queen

SANTA Cruz Carnival is in full flow, and this week saw the start of the beauty pageants, with young Idaira Afonso beating off stiff competition to be crowned Carnival Princess. Fifteen girls made the final, and the auditorium was packed to the rafters. The standard was high, with all the girls showing an amazing amount of confidence as they dazzled on stage. The contestants started the gala in traditional dress and sang along to traditional

songs, before dressing into their own outfits for the main body of the contest. These outfits were full of colour and originality, and it was easy to see how much hard work these girls and their designers had put in. A variety of local dance troops and musical acts kept the crowd entertained while the judges had the thankless task of marking the contestants. They took longer than originally planned, such was the standard

of the final. Eventually they elected six bridesmaids. The entire runner-up and first lady was Eileen Martin, with Irune Rodríguez the second lady-in-waiting. The third bridesmaid was Yunaisi Fuentes who came ahead of Alexia Hernandez, Carmina Perez (whose Wizard of Oz outfit drew the biggest applause) and Anabel Gutiérrez.

The event was such a success that there are already plans to expand it next year. But there was one fly in the ointment. Several parents of the participants had to purchase tickets for the competition, even though they were told they didn’t have to. In tough economic times, it does seem that

something like that should be reviewed. A couple of days later, Rosenda Campos was crowned Senior Carnival Queen and she celebrated like she had won Miss World! She received her sceptre and crown in a fine outfit designed by Samuel Curbelo. María Gutiérrez was voted her First Lady of Honour and María Elvira Fernandez her Second Lady. This

event was a little more light-hearted than the other pageants, but the ladies and the crowd certainly enjoyed themselves! It’s the Blue Riband event on Wednesday as the Carnival Queen competition sees the good and the great out in force. The contest has been sold out for months, but you can watch the Gala unfold on TV Canarias.

Feeling that lucky? Don’t bet against 8 THIS is the lucky issue, apparently. According to those from China, the number 8 not 7 is the luckiest of all numbers.

So by rights, we should all be three times luckier this week now we have reached issue number 888. I will be testing the water by placing a bet on Adi getting all 10 football predictions right from his article on page 55. While that may be pushing it a little, you have every chance of winning our special competition on page 9. It’s free to enter, with a gr8 prize of a Valentine’s meal at the amazing Restaurant 88. Good luck. And talking of luck a friend of mine recently won a sizeable sum on the Lotto. He has not revealed how much, but it is a lump. And good luck to him. I think the most I’ve ever won is a tenner. I guess the fact that I never buy a ticket may have something to do with my poor Lotto returns. It’s just not for me. I’ve never really been lucky

when it comes to those sort of things. Last week I won a bottle of brandy at the Eric Bristow Golf day - the first raffle prize I’ve won since I got the booby prize of a West Ham shirt at a Tenerife Hammers event. My Dad, on the other hand, is the luckiest git ever. When he was in the navy he would always come home on a Friday afternoon with a joint of meat or half a bottle of whiskey after winning the raffle in the mess. And I mean every week! I don’t think my Mum visited the butcher once in five years. “Have you always been lucky, Dad?” I once asked him. “No,” he replied. “But then one night I met your Mother.” I still don’t know how to take that comment!

Dear Editor, I refer to your front-page story last week headlined “The All Inclusive 142m euros problem!” I don’t know where the 13 euros per day comes from, and suggest this figure should be substantially more. I live on the Island and two drinks costs me six euros, a meal out about 12 euros and a snack and drink around five euros. It would take only three euros on other incidental spending you mention, like taxis, tipping and public transport, to take the daily 13 euros spent to a more realistic 26 euros, making it a 284m-euro AllInclusive problem! All-Inclusive holidays are paid for in the country of origin. The only money coming into the Island is the wholesale cost of the hotel providing the services which, incidentally, has been screwed down by the tour operators’ muscle, I believe. I remember reading in a previous Canarian Weekly issue that one hotel was getting 30 euros day to provide total services. Profit is being made in other countries that never sees the Island. I live in Playa Paraiso, mentioned in your article, and 10 years ago the village was thriving. Rhythm n Booze had live acts every night - now closed! Talk of the Town had live acts every night - now closed. Slug & Lettuce & Scorpios had live acts every night - now bars! Mercadona supermarket - now closed! The two Chinese take-aways - closed! Banco March - closed! Caja Canarias Bank - closed! Ten years ago, you had to be in the bars by 8pm to get a seat, and the streets were heaving. Now they are DEAD, and there are live acts performing in hotels only. I have spoken with owners of remaining businesses and most are struggling and reporting poor sales. What has changed? The four Playa Paraiso hotels are now All-Inclusive. If you go into the hotel bars and food halls, they are buzzing with people. Last year, friends staying in one of these hotels refused to join us for a meal in a restaurant because they were eating in the hotel as “It was already paid for”. I have PR’d for a restaurant in Las Americas for nine years, and an increasing number of people apologise for not supporting the restaurant this year as they were offered such a good deal to go All-Inclusive! They say they would like to support us, but have already paid for their food and drink in the hotel. I have heard some good and bad reports, but most say the food in the hotel is okay. Several say the food is a bit repetitive after a week, while the self-service and buffet food lacks that personal touch of being waited on. Having paid for All-Inclusive, most people come to us for a change whereas, previously, they would have visited several times. The government doesn’t seem to realise that personal, friendly service takes staff, and a small restaurant may employ 8-10 people generating taxes, social and employment benefits to service a small number of holiday-makers. But the hotel feeds in self-service masses and employs relatively few people. Holiday-makers have told me the hotel they like has now gone All-Inclusive and that they have no choice if they want to go there. I read in your emails section that the Las Dalias hotel in Costa Adeje is going All-Inclusive from 1st November, despite a well-supported petition. The public is being dictated to with no choice: it’s “come All-Inclusive or don’t come at all! And some won’t! Name supplied

Dear Sir, I read with interest the article printed in last week’s CW issue. I recently bought a small holiday villa in a complex of 37 properties in Costa Adeje and was voted on to the Community Committee at our recent AGM. I was surprised during my first meeting to read the list of bad debtors, one of whom owes many thousands of euros and seems immune to legal proceedings. H even runs various businesses illegally from his property against the “residential only” rules that cover the complex. The Administrator says many legal attempts have been made to recover the debt, but each attempt meets with little to no progress; either the guy pays a few hundred euros or totally ignores any warnings sent to him. The Administrator says she has known her counterparts to be arrested if they take action, such as cutting off his water or electricity. The debtor seems to know this and is, basically, sticking two fingers up at us. Can you advise of any action that can been taken to deal with debtor? D. Wyn Jones

Dear Editor With reference to last week’s “Lavatory Humour” story, I cannot agree with the opinion of Judge Stefan Hank on this case. The agreement between Landlord and Tenant is very clear. 1. The Landlord agrees to provide accommodation to a reasonable habitable standard. 2. The Tenant agrees to maintain the accommodation to a reasonable standard, and to return the premises in a like manner when he vacates. The question here is of hygiene and cleanliness. The damage caused by the tenant did not happen in one day (like a broken window) but occurred over a period of time. Thus, the Tenant was negligent in not maintaining the premises to a reasonable standard, in accordance with the agreement. The landlord was within his rights to claim for the damage caused. I would suggest he goes to appeal using a different lawyer. Rodney Hart Retired property owner.

Freezing Spain - and there’s more to come MORE than 220 people trapped by snow on roads in northern Spain have been rescued by emergency services.

Drivers in hundreds of cars were stuck for up to 17 hours overnight on roads between Cantabria and the province of Palencia. And local media reported temperatures of -15C (5F) and up 40cm (1.3ft) of snow in the region.

The country is in the middle of a rare icy spell, expected to worsen over the next five days, with cold weather alerts issued for 20 provinces. Abandoned cars and overturned lorries have piled up on main roads near the northern city of Santander. And Spanish police said that dozens of military vehicles and snow ploughs were being used to clear the area. Many schools in the region were closed,

and there were numerous power cuts, with at least four towns in the Cantabria still without power yesterday (Thursday). Snow has also closed roads in Catalonia, where winds of over 75mph have disrupted railway services, and where the coldest temperatures are expected over the weekend, warned the national weather service. Snowfalls have also closed roads as far south as Andalucia.

Bank profits soaring...

TWO of Spain’s most important banks have posted encouraging results, and they are being treated as proof that the Spanish economy is slowly starting to improve.

Santander, boosted by earnings from its lending business and with charges on soured loans dropping, has posted a near-70% jump in fourth-quarter profit from a year earlier, The Spanish bank, the eurozone’s largest, said net profit was 1.46bn euros (£1.1bn) in the October-December period - slightly below forecasts for a 1.47bneuro quarterly profit. It was the first quarter under new chief Ana Botin, who has shaken up the lender with management changes. And he bolstered capital through a recent cash call, which raised 7.5bn euros in share sale. Provisions for underperforming loans in

that final quarter fell to 2.5bn euros from 2.8bn a year earlier. Bad loans, as a proportion of total lending at Santander, fell to 5.2% from 5.3% at the end of September. Like local peers reporting results in the past week, Santander revised 2013 earnings downwards to reflect payments to deposit guarantee funds. Without that restatement, fourth-quarter net profit would have risen just 37%. “We will focus on organic growth,” said chairman Ms Botin, who took over in September from her late father, Emilio Botin. Meanwhile, BBVA also outstripped expectations in the fourth quarter of 2014 as Spain’s second-largest bank made strides. According to figures released yesterday, the bank made profits of nearly 700m euros in the three months to the end of December mainly through increased business in Spain. These figures compare with a loss of nearly

850m euros over the same period a year ago, down to the sale of a stake in an overseas bank. The unexpected rise in profits has been credited to falling costs of deposits and a recovery in new loans. The BBVA also saw a large rise in the number of new mortgages and consumer finance. The bank’s chairman, Francisco Gonzalez said: “It’s been a difficult but good year. We’ve had growth of revenues, good control of cost and risk indicators, above all for Spain, have improved. Spain is no longer a problem, but rather an opportunity.” The figures top a good six months for BBVA. In July, it bought Catalunya Bank for 1.2bn euros. It also increased its stake in Turkish bank Ranting a few weeks ago, and was able to dump its holding in Chinese bank Citic. Overall net profit at the bank was 2.6bn euros in 2014, which was an impressive rise of just over 25% on 2013.

Chosen few are allowed to see historic Magna Carta THE winners of a public ballot have been able to view the last four original copies of the 1215 Magna Carta in London this week.

It was a once-in-alifetime chance for the lucky few, chosen from more than 40,000 entrants from over 20 countries, to see one of the most important documents in history. They were brought together for the first time at the British Library in Euston, home to two of the documents, together with countless works, maps, and other written gems - all priceless! This year marks the Magna Carta’s 800th anniversary and the original copies were on display for three days this week before being taken to the House of Lords for one day. Two will be returned

to the British Library while the others go back to Lincoln and Salisbury Cathedrals, where they are kept. The Magna Carta was authorised on 15th June 1215 at Runnymede, on the banks of the River Thames in Surrey. The document was agreed by King John to appease rebel barons in the heart of battle. It is considered to be one of the first steps towards parliamentary democracy and includes the principle that no one was above the law - including the king! It charted the right to a fair trial, and limits on taxation without representation, and it inspired a number of other documents, including the US Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Only three clauses are still valid: the one guaranteeing the liberties of the English Church; the clause confirming

the privileges of the City of London and other towns; and the

clause that states that no free man shall be imprisoned without

the lawful judgement of his equals. King John is said to

have signed the Magna Carta, but it is generally accepted that he probably authorised the document with a royal seal. In a joint statement, the Library and Cathedrals said: “King John could surely never have anticipated the enduring global legacy of Magna Carta when he agreed to its terms in 1215. “Eight hundred years later, the international interest and excitement about this unification event is testament to the extraordinary significance and symbolic power of these four manuscripts.” It is believed that about 250 copies of the original manuscript were created and sent to legal and religious officials across the country to make sure it was carried out. Seventeen of these documents are known to have survived.

Police forces cop more complaints than ever! COMPLAINTS against police in England and Wales reached record levels in the 2013-2014 period.

There were 34,863 cases involving complaints, according to figures from the Independent Police Complaints Commission. They show a 15% increase on the previous year - and the highest since the Independent Police Complaints Commission was established in 2004. And the IPCC said the rise was clear in the majority of police forces. The highest number of complaints concerned police neglect or failure in duty, followed by complaints about police being rude or intolerant. The largest percentage increase, year-onyear, was recorded by Northumbria Police, which went from 401 complaints to 794 - a staggering 98% rise. The next highest total went to City of London Police, whose com-

plaints rose 90%, from 123 to 234, between 2012-13 and 2013-14. City of London Police said the increase was down to the force taking responsibility for complaints made against Action Fraud, the crime-reporting centre, during 2013-14. And it also said that complaints made solely against that force had dropped by15% in the same period.

More than one allegation can be included in a complaint “case” and the police watchdog said some of the overall increase in England and Wales was through the broadening of the definition of a complaint. New complaint categories regarding the direction and control of the police were introduced in 2013-2014. Dame Anne Owers, the IPCC chair, said the

figures were “obviously worrying”, and added: “They show police forces were not handling complaints sufficiently well.” She said the IPCC upheld 49% of appeals from people whose complaints were not even recorded in the first place, as well as 44% of appeals from those whose complaints had been investigated by the local force.

“As we have said many times, this reflects a complaints system which is complex, bureaucratic and overfocused on blame,” she added. Since 2013, forces have dealt with some of their own appeals, but Dame Anne said: “The IPCC has always been concerned about this, as we consider that it is an in-force review and not an independent ap-

peal. “These figures add to that concern. It is clear that forces uphold a much lower proportion of appeals than the IPCC.” Chief Supt Gavin Thomas, Vice-President of the Police Superintendents Association, told BBC Radio 5 live that his immediate reaction to the figures was “disappointment”. But he added that cuts to the police force were not helping the situation. “We’ve got 35,000 fewer people in the police service since 2010, yet we’re dealing with more complexity and more demand than ever before,” he stressed. “So I suppose, in a way, I welcome this because what it does is indicate that we are starting to see a service which is starting to creak under the pressure.” The Home Office is currently reviewing police complaints’ procedures with the aim of simplifying the system and making it more transparent.

Michelangelo rides again! AN international research team, led by Cambridge University experts, believe that two obscure bronze statues may actually have been sculpted by Michelangelo.

If so, the works will be the only surviving Michelangelo bronzes in the world. The sculptures, of naked, muscular men riding on panthers, was attributed to Michelangelo in the 19th Century. That theory had long been dismissed, but the researchers are so convinced these are the real thing that they will be displayed at the Fitzwilliam Museum, attached to the University of Cambridge.

Dr Victoria Avery, keeper of the applied arts department at the Fitzwilliam, said: “It has been fantastically exciting to have been able to participate in this ground-breaking project, and to draw on evidence from conservation scientists and anatomists.” She added: “It has involved input from many art historians in the UK, Europe and the States.” One of the figures was sketched in a 1508 drawing by a Michelangelo student. The bronzes have most recently been attributed to Dutch sculptor Willem Danielsz Van Tetrode, while the 19th Century belief that the sculptures were by Michelangelo had been dismissed by experts for at least a century. But this attitude changed last autumn

when Paul Joannides, emeritus professor of art history at the University of Cambridge, connected them to a tiny detail in a 16th Cen-

tury drawing held in the Musee Fabre in Montpellier, France. One of Michelangelo’s apprentices had copied various, slightly-earli-

er, lost sketches by his master - and in the corner of one was a drawing of a muscular youth riding a panther. Its pose is very simi-

lar to that of one of the bronzes and is drawn with the same style used by Michelangelo in his designs for sculpture. The bronzes were compared with other Michelangelo works and found to be extremely similar in style and anatomy to his works of 1500-1510. The date was confirmed by the preliminary conclusions of initial scientific analysis. Using X-rays, the team established the cast were thick-walled and heavy - an indication that they date to the late 15th or early 16th Century. Research is continuing and the final conclusion will be presented in July. The bronzes, currently on loan to the Fitzwilliam Museum from a private collection, will be on display until 9th August.

Auschwitz camp guard was an ‘accessory to 300,000 murders’ A FORMER Nazi death-camp guard, charged with at least 300,000 counts of accessory to murder, is to be tried in Germany.

Granada priests face sex charge

TEN Roman Catholic priests and two Catholic lay workers have been charged with child sex abuse by a Spanish judge in Granada.

The 12 are suspected of abusing four teenage boys between 2004 and 2007, the most serious offences occurring in a house used by the priests. In November, Pope Francis telephoned one of the alleged victims, now 24, to offer his apologies after the man wrote to him about the alleged abuse. The pontiff, who has pledged zero tolerance of child sex abuse, then ordered a Church investigation. Several arrests were made in November, but the suspects are now free on bail. According to Spanish broadcaster RTVE, the young man in ques-

tion, and a friend, had served as altar boys in the Granada Diocese. It is alleged that they were invited by a priest to spend time at his parochial house and at another property, where the most serious assaults were committed. Following the Pope’s call to the alleged victim, the Archbishop of Granada, Francisco Javier Martinez, and fellow priests, prostrated themselves in front of the altar of Granada’s cathedral to seek pardon for sexual abuse in the Church. Many survivors of abuse by priests are angry at what they see as the Vatican’s failure to punish senior officials who have been accused of covering up scandals. In July, Pope Francis begged forgiveness from the victims of sexual abuse by priests, and condemned the Church’s “complicity” in hiding the “grave crimes” committed by clerics.

Oskar Groening, known as the “bookkeeper of Auschwitz”, was said to have been responsible for counting banknotes confiscated from prisoners. The 93-year-old, who goes to trial in April, faces charges over 425,000 people sent to Auschwitz in Poland between May and July1944. About 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, were murdered at the camp between 1940 and its liberation on 27 January 1945.. The trial will be held in the north German city of Lueneburg. Fifty-five survivors and victims’ relatives are plaintiffs in the case, with many likely to witness the proceedings. Prosecutors in Lueneburg allege that as well as counting money, Groening also hid victims’ luggage away from new arrivals to disguise their fate. The former Nazi guard was aware that those deemed unfit to work at the camp “were murdered directly after their arrival”, according to a statement from the prosecutors’ office. Groening, just 21 when he began working at Auschwitz, does not deny witnessing the mass killings there. In 2005 he told the BBC: “I saw the gas

chambers. I saw the crematoria. I saw the open fires. I was on the ramp when selections for the gas chambers took place. “I would like you to believe these atrocities happened - because I was there.” There was a global commemoration last week of the 70th anniversary of the Soviet Red Army’s liberation of Auschwitz. Hamburg prosecutors

are also investigating a 93-year-old woman, suspected of having served as a Nazi SS guard at the Bergen-Belsen camp. Hilde Michnia (born Liesewicz), a Hamburg resident, allegedly helped evacuate the Gross-Rosen camp as Allied forces approached, forcing prisoners on a march which killed around 1,400. The investigation into her alleged involvement

began after a private citizen filed a complaint against her, revealed a prosecution spokesperson. But Michnia denies the allegations. She told Germany’s Die Welt newspaper on Sunday that she was not involved in any atrocities and worked only in the camps’ kitchens. There have been renewed efforts to bring concentration camp guards to justice after a 2011 court ruling that allowed prosecutors to charge people with complicity in the Holocaust - not only those accused of mass murder. The ruling saw John Demjanjuk sentenced to five years in prison for involvement in the killing of Jews at the Sobibor camp, where he had served as a guard.

Mockingbird follow-up arrives… 55 years later

15 CW

Spanish hospital eyes heart cure A SPANISH hospital has completed a medicinal world “first” by successfully treating seven heart-attack victims with stem cells culled from healthy donors.

HARPER Lee, celebrated author of To Kill A Mockingbird, is publishing a second book this summer - 55 years after her classic first-timer.

Her latest offering, Go Set A Watchman, was apparently completed in the Fifties and set aside until it was rediscovered late last year. Despite being completed earlier it is, essentially, a sequel to the Pulitzer Prize-winning Mockingbird, which was adapted for a Hollywood film. The new 304-page book will be released on 14th July, and Publisher HarperCollins plans a first print run of two million copies. Lee, now 88, released a statement saying: “In the mid-Fifties, I completed a novel called Go Set A Watchman. “It features the character known as Scout as an adult woman, and I thought it a pretty decent effort. “My editor, who was taken by the flashbacks to Scout’s childhood, persuaded me to write a novel (which became To Kill A Mockingbird) from the point of view of

the young Scout. “I was a first-time writer, so I did as I was told. I hadn’t realised it (the original book) had survived, so was surprised and delighted when my dear friend and lawyer, Tonja Carter, discovered it. “After much thought and hesitation, I shared it with a handful of people I trust and was pleased to hear that they considered it worthy of publication. “I am humbled and amazed that this will now be published after all these years.” The “new” book is set in Lee’s famed Maycomb, Alabama, during the mid-Fifties, 20 years

after To Kill A Mockingbird and roughly contemporaneous with the time Lee was writing the story. The Civil Rights movement was taking hold by the time she was working on Watchman. The Supreme Court had ruled unanimously in 1953 that segregated schools were unconstitutional, and the arrest of Rosa Parks in 1955 led to the year-long Montgomery bus boycott. The publisher says the book will be released as Lee first wrote it, with no revisions. But it also says the author is unlikely to publicise the book. Lee has rarely spoken

to the media since the Sixties, when she told one reporter that she wanted “to leave some record of small-town, middle-class, Southern life”. To Kill A Mockingbird is among the most beloved novels in history, with worldwide sales topping 40 million copies. It is also a widelystudied text in schools across the UK. The book, released on 11th July, 1960, won the Pulitzer Prize and was adapted into a 1962 film of the same name, starring Gregory Peck in an Oscar-winning performance as the courageous lawyer Atticus Finch.

The regional Madrid government, which runs the hospital, said its Gregorio Maranon hospital in the city is now planning to treat a total of 55 patients with the technique in a clinical trial. “Seven patients have already been operated on and they have progressed very well, despite having suffered serious damage to their heart tissue,” it added in a general statement. It is the first time allogeneic cells - stem cells which come from another person - have been used to repair damage to a heart caused by a heart attack. A heart attack happens when the organ is starved of oxygen, such as when a clot blocks the flow of blood to the heart. As the heart heals, the dead muscle is replaced with scar tissue. But because this does not beat like healthy heart muscle, the ability to pump blood around the body is reduced. While patients with mild heart failure can live a relatively normal life by taking drugs, those with severe heart

failure can suffer prolonged pain and distress. That’s because everyday tasks, such as doing the shopping or taking a shower ,leave them exhausted. Doctors the world over are looking at ways of “regenerating” the heart to replace the scar tissue with beating muscle. Stem cells figure prominently in their plans, although they have involved the patient’s own stem cells until now. While it takes 4-8 weeks to process a patient’s own stem cells to be used in therapy, donor cells can be processed and stored, and are available for immediate use, the hospital’s head of cardiology, Francisco FerandezAvila, said in the statement. “Besides this very important advantage, the technique allows for the selection of donors whose cells show the greatest potential to repair heart tissue,” he added. “Before being processed, the allogeneic cells are studied exhaustively and only those which functioned best are selected.” The cells are injected into the heart through a coronary artery, and the clinical trial is financed partially by the EU. The Madrid hospital is co-ordinating the study, which has involved the co-operation of some 20 European bodies.

Crowds pay homage to Canaries’ Patron Saint

MORE than 20,000 people flocked to honour the Virgin of Candelaria, Patron Saint of the Canary Islands, last Monday as part of a day of celebrations. The good and the great were also in attendance for the annual festivities, but Canaries President Paulino Rivero was an unexplained absentee. He was represented by Health Minister Bridget Mendoza. Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso was there, along with the heads of Naval Command and Air Command, plus local mayors and councillors. The traditional midday Mass at the packed Basilica, hosted by the Bishop of Tenerife, Bernardo Alvarez, was followed by the procession of the Virgin of Candelaria around the square. Again, the square was packed as locals and tourists struggled to a get a glimpse. Santa Cruz Municipal Band and the Las Candelas Band, who played long and loud, received a warm welcome. Candelaria Mayor José Gumersindo Garcia Trujilo, delighted with the day’s events, said: “These celebrations remain an important part of who we are. The fact that there were more people here this year, and every year there seems to be more and more, proves this.” The second day of February is an important fiesta day in the Canarian calendar, and the respect paid to the Virgin of Candelaria or La Morenita, as she

ace’, which was called Cueva de Chinguaro (in Chimisay). At some stage, a warrior called Anton noticed the statue. A few years previously, he had been enslaved and converted to Christianity upon his capture by Castilians. Anton recognised the statue as that of the Virgin Mary. He told the King of his religious conversion and the statue’s symbolism. is known - is taken extremely seriously. As is always the case with such legends, there are conflicting reports about how this ceremony began. But in 1594, Alonso de Espinosa wrote of an event believed to have occurred in 1392. Espinosa’s texts state that a statue of the Virgin Mary was discovered on the beach of

Chimisay, an area now known as Guimar. The statue was holding a child in one arm and a candle in the other hand (thus, the “Virgin of Candelaria”). The statue was discovered by two goat-herders, and one of them attempted to throw a stone at the statue. However, his arm became paralysed. And when the other man

tried to stab the statue with a knife, he ended up stabbing himself. The statue was recovered by Acaymo, King of the Guanches, and taken to his ‘Pal-

The statue was then held in the highest regard after it was moved to the Guanches’ Cueva de Achbinico (Cave of San Blas), the Canaries’ first Christian sanctuary, located behind the Candelaria Basilica, which was their regal place. According to legend, the statue was then stolen, only to resurface in Lanzarote. In later years, it found its way back to Tenerife and, on 2nd February 1497 at the Cueva de Achbinico, the first Mass was held in honour of the statue. The Virgin of Candelaria was declared Patroness of the Canary Islands in 1559. But in 1826, the statue was lost to the ocean after what was believed to be a Tsunami engulfed the area. Bristow hits target again

THE Eric Bristow Golf Day was a raging success at Los Palos last weekend, and a total exceeding 2,000 euros was raised for San Miguel Lions in an Oasis Fmsponsored event which grows by the year.

The early shotgun start made conditions perfect for golf, and all the teams played decent rounds. Only a couple of golfers found the water and incurred the 5-euro penalty fine for doing so! The team event was taken by the Polygon lads of Jambo, Fred, Steve and Jimmy. It was a magnificent day for Jambo, who also took the individual honours.

Afterwards, there was a fun afternoon at Shambles Bar in Los Cristianos, which included a raffle and an auction that swelled the charity coffers. Eric told us: “It was a perfect day, and we all enjoyed it. I’d like to say a very big thank-you to everyone who helped, and especially to Richard Snelling, who has made this such a fantastic event.” Photos: Sir Old Golfer

All-rounder Dane hits another level! IT is fair to say that Dane Bowers, pop star, TV presenter, DJ and record producer, has had a rollercoaster career for the past two decades.

But, as he admits: “I can’t really say I’ve had a job because I have enjoyed myself so much. And it’s been mostly highs, with the odd low here and there.” The disarming 35-yearold, a member of Nineties R&B boy-band Another Level, knows exactly what it’s like to perform in front of 100,000 spectators Hyde Park’s annual Party in the Park, twice. And he has tasted the ultimate high of a No.1 hit with the group’s Freak Me in 1998. “That was a big buzz, but it was even better going on Top of the Pops and being announced as

holding the No.1 spot that week,” said Dane. “It was amazing!” Among the rare lows was his relationship with Page 3 girl Jordan, now a “respected” (ahem) author and mum called Katie Price! “That was 18 years ago, but she won’t stop

going on about it,” said Dane, who is here in Tenerife in his capacity as a DJ and also a solo singer. That apart, he really has had a ball since performing as a disc jockey at Streatham Ice Rink, Surrey, as a 15-year-old. “My dad was a DJ on

our local radio station Jackie, so it was obvious I would follow in his footsteps,” recalled Dane. After leaving his school in Croydon, Surrey, he enrolled at a performing arts college, the BRIT School, in the same town. Two years later, he found himself singing in Another Level, from 1997-2000, alongside Mark Baron, Wayne Williams and Bobak Kianoush. “It was so exciting,” he said. “From nowhere, we were getting recognition everywhere. We had money in our pockets and it was so fantastic that I didn’t have time for any nerves.” Another Level had seven UK Top-10 singles in two years, and, as well as their chart-topper, they had a platinumselling, self-titled debut album. Their follow-up album, Nexus, which was released a year later, became a gold-seller, and was followed by a 1999 Brit Award nomination for Best British Newcomer. By coincidence, Dane will be presenting ITV’s 2015 Brit Awards later this month at the O2 Arena - dashing to London and then racing back here to resume his nine-week residency. After the group went their separate ways in 2000, Dane wrote and fronted two UK Top 10 hits for UK garage act True Steppers: Buggin, which reached No.6 in

the charts in April 2000, and Out of Your Mind, which subsequently became Spice Girl Victoria Beckham’s first solo hit, reaching No.2. “It gave me a tremendous boost professionally,” said Dane. “The Spice Girls were and still are enormous, so to be associated with Victoria did my career nothing but good. And she really is a nice person.” The following year, singing simply as Dane, he had two singles released, which both reached No.9 in the charts, and he then went on to work behind the scenes, writing and producing. He began TV presenting in 2002, co-hosting Popstars: The Rivals – an extra show with former Pop Idol contestant Hayley Evetts. Plenty of TV work came his way over the years, and in 2009 he showed up in an episode of Celebrity Come Dine With Me. The following year saw him in the Celebrity Big Brother house, with the likes of hard-man footballer Vinnie Jones and cagefighter Alex Reid, who was married to Katie Price at that time. Reid won, with Dane second and Jones third. But it was time, he felt, to return to the recording studio for a pop al-

bum, and his first single taken from it, All She Needs, was released in July that year. Then came a huge disappointment for him. In August 2013, Another Level were on the verge of signing up for the ITV2 documentary The Big Reunion, when Wayne Williams turned it, and Mark Baron couldn’t get time off from his job, working for Alan Sugar. However, Dane joined The Big Reunion supergroup 5th Story, along with Kenzie from Blazin’ Squad and former soloists Adam Rickitt, Kavana and Gareth Gates. “That was a blast,” said Dane.”We had a fantastic time, but we had to disband because we were all too busy on other projects.” Now, he feels, he’s in a good place, careerwise. He is still in the limelight and believes he has a lot more to offer. His Tenerife fans will certainly endorse that belief. Dane will be Tenerife for nine weeks. He will be presenting a weekly show on Oasis Fm and performing a variety of night gigs. You can catch him this week at Biancos and his next gig at Magic Bar, opposite Safari Centre, will be on Thursday 19th February.

Elsewhere, Sister Monica Joan feels increasingly redundant and sidelined as the busy midwives go about their work until she finds herself unexpectedly assisting Shelagh with an emergency birth. Meanwhile, Trixie is delighted at hearing the Bishop has requested a meeting with Tom Hereward and invites herself along. Richard Wilson is on a driving tour of the UK in his vintage 1960s Daimler, but there’s no sat nav for him – he’s using Shell Guides first published in the 1930s. In this final episode Richard is following the Shell Guide to Oxfordshire, which excluded the famous city and concentrated on the wealth of other sights in the county on offer. He drives to Henley on Thames and visits one of the most famous rowing clubs in the world. He goes behind the scenes of Blenheim Palace and learns how to keep the Duke’s bathwater hot by the plumber and calls in to the village of Bampton, which doubles up as the village of Downton in the TV series.

The Gift BBC1, 21.00

In The Gift, a brand new series for BBC One, presenters Matt Baker and Mel Giedroyc follow the extraordinary, sometimes difficult, but ultimately heartwarming stories of people who missed the chance to say thank you or sorry when it mattered most. From lives that were saved by incredible acts of bravery, to regretful acts that leave a powerful need to seek forgiveness, there are certain words, which left unsaid, can lead to a lifetime of regret. The show embarks on a journey taking us from the remotest parts of Africa to the Hollywood Hills. In 1987 soldier Patrick Provis was left fighting for his life after being hit by an IRA mortar. But facing extraordinary dangers, an army helicopter flew in to rescue him and Patrick survived. Now desperate to draw a line under the trauma that continues to haunt him, Patrick can’t rest until he’s thanked the person who took the decision to rescue him. But so far his 20 year search to find the person who saved his life has drawn a blank. With military records from the Troubles shrouded in secrecy, what are the chances of Matt succeeding where Patrick has failed? For the past 60 years Grace Bates has been desperate to apologise to Hermann, the first man she ever loved. They met as teenagers in the 1950s, but a terrible mistake by Grace left Hermann heartbroken and he emigrated to America. Now in her 70s, Grace is determined to find Hermann but time is running out. But if Mel can find Hermann, how will he feel about Grace reappearing in his life, and will he accept her apology?

This moving portrait of love and loss examines the impact of the ultimate sacrifice - marriages cut short and children growing up without fathers. There is a message of hope too, as each of these extraordinary women has found the strength to move forward and start living again. Exposure: The Kill List ITV1, 22.40

“The truth of the matter is, those individuals actually if they will not reconcile, then people like me ...will hunt them down to the ends of the world and kill them.” - Lt Gen Sir Graeme Lamb, Deputy Commanding General of Multi-National Forces in Iraq This new documentary in the Exposure current affairs strand reveals the inside story of a special operations command that targeted, captured and killed insurgents during the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars, how it affected the conflicts - and the consequences its legacy has brought to bear today. Produced by Brook Lapping, who made the acclaimed 9/11: The Day That Changed The World and The Hunt For Bin Laden for ITV, this programme features testimony from former SAS soldiers who served with the command, their American counterparts, and the military leaders who put together the so-called ‘kill list’ using a state-of-the-art intelligence database. This in-depth documentary reveals how the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) under General Stanley McChrystal took the targeting of insurgents to a new level by tracing them on a mass scale via cell phones before launching up to a dozen raids a night to capture or to kill them. Testimony from soldiers who carried out the raids indicates that sometimes they targeted the wrong people. While the raids were brutally effective, they fuelled opposition to coalition forces, probably made the Taliban stronger in Afghanistan, and contributed to the growth of ISIS in Iraq, say intelligence officers and counter insurgency experts who took part.

The Great Comic Relief Bake Off BBC1, 20:00

The Great British Bake Off returns with four special Comic Relief programmes. In each episode four different celebrities battle it out in the Bake Off tent in an attempt to raise money for Comic Relief - and to win the coveted Comic Relief Star Baker apron. Sue Perkins presents the opening episode. The first brave celebrities to enter the Bake Off Tent are four of the most iconic figures in British entertainment, and they must take on three challenges set by Mary and Paul. The first challenge they are set is enormous for these baking novices: they have to make a giant cookie or biscuit. The technical challenge is one of Mary’s classic recipes, 12 mini fruit tarts, and there’s a demanding showstopper challenge - a tiered chocolate cake inspired by a memorable occasion.

Scorpion ITV2, 21.00 When Sylvester accidentally triggers an explosive device during an investigation, Team Scorpion must focus on finding who’s responsible even while their friend’s life hangs in the balance. Scorpion is inspired by a true story - its a high-octane drama about eccentric genius Walter O’Brien (played by Elyes Gabel) and his team of brilliant misfits who are the last line of defence against complex, hightech threats of the modern age. O’Brien’s “Scorpion” team includes Toby Curtis (played by Eddie Kaye Thomas), an expert behaviourist who can read anyone, Happy Quinn (played by Jadyn Wong), a mechanical prodigy; and Sylvestor Dodd (played by Ari Stidham), a statistics guru. Pooling their extensive knowledge to solve mind boggling dramas amazes federal agent Cabe Gallo (played by Robert Patrick), who shares a harrowing history with O’Brien. However, while this socially awkward group is comfortable with each other’s humour and quirks, life outside their circle confounds them, so they rely on Paige Dineen (played by Katharine McPhee), who has a young gifted son, to translate the world for them. These nerdy masterminds have at last found the perfect job; a place where they can apply their exceptional brainpower to solves the nation’s crises, while also helping each other learn how to fit in.

The Great British Sewing Bee BBC2, 20:00

Some of the country’s best home sewers face three challenges to make or alter an item of clothing under intense time pressure. Each week, their creations are judged by Savile Row’s Patrick Grant and sewing expert May Martin, until one of them is crowned Britain’s best amateur sewer. The nine remaining amateur sewers prepare to do battle again. The three challenges this week test the sewers’ ability to make clothes on a miniature scale, starting with a child’s waistcoat done the tailor’s way, before they are tasked with breathing new life into a boring t-shirt and handme-down dress. The sewing room enters completely into the atmosphere of child’s play for the final fancy-dress challenge - creating everything from miniature boxing shorts with matching gloves, a pink elephant ballerina and even a blue-footed booby bird.

Short story for a big life ALTHOUGH I consider I’m an open-minded individual when it comes to music, like most people I have my preferences.

Soul and Motown is a genre of music I encounter on a regular basis while out and about in the evenings. It is the most consistently-popular brand of music that exists and is a formidable force in the music world. However, it is music I often overlook when searching for new stuff to listen to. Maybe it is because I´ve grown up with it and, perhaps, grown tired of it, I´m not sure. But some voices transcend genre, so you may

hear and enjoy an artiste singing a dance track, for example, when he is, predominantly, a soul singer. It is artistes harbouring this skill who draw us between genre and out of our musical comfort zone on a path of discovery. Ronnie Canada, a wellrounded professional and seasoned entertainer, had had the pleasure of working and singing with some of the biggest acts in the world. His musical journey started as a roadie, sound technician, hairdresser and driver for a group called S.O.U.L. (Sounds of Unity and Love), considered one of the biggest cult groups in the world. When the group dismantled, Ronnie started to work for Larry Hancock with a group

called Truth. They were managed and produced by the legendary O’Jays (Eddie Levert, Walter Williams, William Powell and Bobby Massey). This is just a small insight into the beginning

Treat others the way... IT is not anyone´s place to tell people how to live their lives, but to form an opinion is our inherent right as humans.

Music and the arts are the embodiment of free expression; the only area of the media not bound by censorship (well, in the west at least). Although we are told journalism is without bias and free to express its opinion, that is simply not true. Not all, but most journalists and newspapers are part of the cobweb of corruption that is this planet. Hallelujah then for the arts, an interpretation of liberty that cannot be overstated. Let me get to the point. Recently a friend of mine who shall remain nameless has fallen victim to a longlasting argument. The established and, if you will, hierarchy of the “scene”, can be a

hard crowd to win over. It is rarely with open arms that anyone new on the scene will be welcomed. It is somewhat of an incestuous industry over here at times. And if you don´t already have an “in”, then finding one can be extremely hard. My friend played a gig and was well received by her audience. However, this particular venue does have a regular musician and singer, who later belittled my friend for taking less money than he makes and, thus, accusing her of undercutting him. I was accused of the same thing when I first started playing live music, and I can think of several more people who have encountered this problem. My word, we all have to start somewhere. In every industry in the world, if you are less experienced, then you earn less. It is systematic and logical that as you become better at something, you deserve

more money. In fact, it would be more of an insult to ask for the same sum as someone who has been performing for 25 years, especially when you have been performing for just six months. Collectively we are stronger, and weaker divided, and if music is truly the essence of free expression, then please let people do that. Let´s not fight and fuss, but be glad to be broadening the horizons of our music scene here. Let me know ALTHOUGH I do my best to see and hear all types of music and visit what events I can, I am quite busy and can´t always be “in the loop”, so to speak. If you are a new act, an established one trying something new, or perhaps hosting or know of a music event, let me know. You can find me on Facebook under Andrew Briggs, or Email: briggsyboy16@hotmail. com.

of what was to become a long and illustrious career in music. It was after singing as a member of the Crawford Road Christian Church Choir in the US that Ronnie went on to work at The Karuma House Theatre - the oldest African American theatre in the US - in Cleveland’s Fairfax neighbourhood. His growing success and popularity continued as he caught his first musical break with a group called Sly, Slick and Wicked. At the time of Ronnie´s arrival, the group already had three top albums under their belt and had been managed and produced by the legendary godfather of soul, Mr James Brown. Ronnie was the lead

vocalist on one of the group’s hits. The song, originally recorded by Tony Bennett, was entitled Because of You just one of many tracks Ronnie has recorded and released. In 1985, after spending most, if not all, of his musical years touring and recording in the States Ronnie, was given the opportunity to travel to Spain to work and sing with The American Drifters. They were, perhaps, the group who instigated adoration for this type of music . Shortly after the start of his Spanish adventures, Ronnie recorded his first solo record, I Don’t Believe It for AJ’s Records. This record was released in May 1987 and has since been

re-released on Boogie Times Records. But Ronnie´s success does not lie solely in the past. Recently, Ronnie has recorded and released music with superstar DJ and producer Judge Jules on his 2009 album Bring The Noise Singing. In conclusion Ronnie Canada is a shining example of what hard work and perseverance can mean in any profession, but especially in music. He has worked under the production of legends like James Brown and sung with unforgettable voices such as that of Betty Wright. We, the music lovers in Tenerife, should feel privileged and elated to have Ronnie call this little Island home.

By Val Sainsbury GIVING children under 2½ an iPad or smartphone to calm them down during a tantrum could stunt their development.

Scientists found that using the latest media as a calming tool prevents youngsters from developing their own methods of self-regulation. And although e-books and learn-to-read apps can prove useful, they are wasted on toddlers and are most effective when used with parents. Past research has found that these kids cannot learn from television and videos as well as they can from real-life interactions until they are nearer three years old. But there are fewer studies investigating whether this is the case

6th February - 12th February 2015

Dangers of iPads for kids for interactive applications. Early research has found that infants and toddlers learn best through hands-on and face-to-face experiences. Dr Jenny Radesky, clinical instructor in developmental behavioural paediatrics at Boston University School of Medicine, said: “Mobile devices are everywhere, and children are using them more frequently at young ages. “The impact these mobile devices are having on the development and behaviour of children is still relatively unknown. “It has been well-studied that increased television time decreases a child’s development of language and social skills. “Similarly, mobile media-use replaces the length of time spent engaging in direct humanhuman interaction.” She added: “Heavy device use during young childhood could interfere with development of empathy, social and problem-solving skills which are, typically, obtained by exploring,

unstructured play and interacting with peers. “These devices also may replace the handson activities important for the development of sensorimotor (control of

nerves) and visual-motor skills, which are important for the learning and application of maths and science.’ The researchers found that while mobile-de-

vice use by children can provide an educational benefit, the use of these devices to distract children during mundane tasks may be detrimental to the social-emo-

tional development of the child. Dr Radesky said: “If these devices become the predominant method to calm and distract young children, will they be able to develop their own internal mechanisms of self-regulation?” While much remains unknown, the authors recommend that mums and dads try each app before allowing their children to access it. And they are encouraged to use these apps with their children, research suggesting that using interactive media together enhances its educational value. “At this time, there are more questions than answers when it comes to mobile media,” said Dr Radesky. “Until more is known about its impact on child development, quality family time is encouraged, either unplugged or a designated family hour.” Researchers reviewed the latest interactive media in a commentary for the Paediatrics journal.

Statins ‘bung’ for GPs really hard to swallow DOCTORS are set to get extra payments for dishing out controversial statin drugs to patients who face a low risk of ever developing heart disease.

It could mean four in 10 adults, including most

of those in late middleage, are put on regular doses in a move that “medicalises” healthy people, leaving them at risk of side-effects such as diabetes and memory loss. Medical experts are angry that doctors are being offered incentives to prescribe the drugs by a government watchdog, which, they say, are

of “doubtful benefit and may cause harm”. Guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) says GPs should get financial incentives to prescribe statins to patients with high blood pressure, even if they have only a low risk of developing heart disease over the next 10 years. Yet many heart specialists say that for a large number of patients, the benefits do not outweigh the risks, which include diabetes, cataracts, debilitating muscle pains, memory loss and fatigue. They say doctors should instead be advising patients to follow a healthy diet and lifestyle to decrease the risk of heart attacks. Klim McPherson, professor of public health at Oxford University, said: “This is shocking. Incentivising doctors to dish out drugs

to patients who may not benefit and, more importantly, may suffer side-effects is wrong and unethical.” Professor McPherson, 73, who recently weaned himself off a two-year statin prescription after suffering debilitating muscle pains added: “This should be a matter of individual patient preference, with patients fully aware of the risks.” Family doctor Des Spence, who works for the British Medical Journal, said: “Once you incentivise GPs to do things, it distorts patient care. Such a recommendation may lead to people being coerced on to medication not in their best interests.” Dr Andrew Green, chairman of the British Medical Association’s clinical and prescribing committee, added: “Statins are important

for patients at high risk. However, this is not the case for many others. “Having targets for statin prescriptions is not the best way to measure good quality care. GPs want to do what is best for each patient, and there’s much more to that than handing out drugs.” Last year NICE told doctors to lower the threshold for statins to those with only a 10% risk of heart disease. That added up to four in 10 adults, including most late-middle aged men and large numbers of women in the same age group, eligible for the drugs. Part of doctors’ complex funding depends on meeting government targets. If this new proposal is approved, statins would be added to the target list, and doctors would have to meet the new NICE guidelines on prescribing the drugs to get a

share of their funds. In effect, GPs would be paid to issue the drugs to patients at low risk of heart disease. Last week, the Sunday Express reported how heart specialists Professor Simon Capewell, Dr Aseem Malhotra and Dr Andrew Apps had urged doctors to be “transparent” with patients about the risks and benefits of statins. They also insisted that family doctors should refrain from “scaremongering” about the risks if patients stop taking them. The warning, published in The Prescriber journal, said statins do nothing to increase life expectancy for low-risk patients but, instead, expose healthy people to potential side-effects that impair quality of life. Health professionals have until 23rd February 23 to send comments to NICE.

HAVE IT YOUR WAY!

My final plea... Say no to the Speedo By Ruth Benson THIS will be my last column for Canarian Weekly and, hopefully, over the last year or so I have made it both relevant and entertaining. For my final article, I have decided to reflect on some of the fashion news I’ve covered.

One of my favourite stories saw the way mannequins have changed over the years. Clothes displayed on mannequins have tended to be one size, but the industry has seen people come in different shapes and sizes - something which has hit the media. I have mentioned a lot about size, and the fashion industry changing its marketing and products to be more specific to body sizes. The average size certainly isn’t 10 - we have petite ladies, tall ladies and larger ladies - and the average size is 16, which is what stores, especially, have realised. Along the same sort of lines, I noted how models had changed, not just in size but in age as well. An ageing population with a disposable income has seen the need to aim at the “grey power” group. The most bizarre mannequins I wrote about, probably, were those

by American Apparel, whose windows in New York displayed pubic hair. Always a company that likes controversy! During my time writing about fashion, we have seen a range of styles come and go, from monochrome, skinny jeans, flares and tartan, to name but a few. But what seems to affect fashion are celebrities and social media. The decisions people make is influenced heavily by celebrities. Take David Beckham modelling for the highstreet chain H & M, and keeping it in the family, with younger son Romeo doing a shoot for Burberry. Also involved in the industry is wife Victoria, who has hit the catwalk with her designs and last year opened her own London boutique. It is not just through adverts and marketing that celebrities have influenced fashion, though, because we have seen the increase of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter featuring celebs posting their pictures. Instagram has exploded over the last year and fashion designers, advertisers and celebs have used this to their own ends. Posting images of themselves has increased over the last year. And I highlighted how one particular celebrity wanted to “break the Internet”. Kim Kardashian is one character mentioned a lot in my articles because of her popularity, as well as the controversy she creates. Kim and her husband,

Kayne West, have huge power and influence, and they use it to the full extreme. Their wedding photos, heavage and, of course, that bum, have hit social media. But Instagram has also been a positive vehicle with campaigns such as #freethenipple and #fatkini, which saw women posting photos of themselves to make people aware of their causes. I did find a lot of my articles were aimed more at women than men, but it seems that men are actually more vain than women, paying more attention to the way they dress and present themselves. Through my research, I noticed a lot of stories about underwear and, funnily enough, worn by women! One such was the Tata bra - basically a bra with nipples on. The idea is for women to feel happy showing their nipples, but not actually doing so. I simply couldn’t understand the concept. Men also had a choice of new swimwear last year with the introduction of the lateral string, as worn by Bobby Norris and Harry Derbidge while in Marbella filming for ITVs The Only Way Is Essex. Regular readers will know I have a pet hate when it comes to swim/ beachwear. I am all for people feeling comfortable in their own skins and wearing what makes them feel comfortable. We all have our own styles and are all different sizes. But one item that never should be worn, whether on a beach, by the pool , even in your own backgarden and especially not with socks and sandals, are Speedos. Men, they do nothing for you and, particularly, they don’t do anything for women! So what have I learned while writing this column? Fashions come and go, and we may not always know what suits us best. But that’s not always important. Feeling happy in yourself and comfortable in how you look is the main thing. Oh, and please, please get rid of those Speedos!

By Carl from Robot

WE were having a discussion in the salon last week with three clients and the topic was:”Do you take your partner’s opinion when choosing a style or hair colour”?

I’ll let you know at the end of the column what all three women said although I’m sure you girls out there will know the answer anyway! If you’re deciding what to do with your hair and want to change anything about it, do you involve your partner or pals? Is what you wear on your head anything to do with anyone else? There are two sides to this story, depending on you as a person and your opinions about yourself. If you feel comfortable with yourself and I’m not just talking hair-wise, you will want to form your own view of how you look to others. Yes, I know that if you were to put on a new outfit and someone said something negative, you would maybe think twice about it. But your hair is different. You can’t just “remove” it and try something else on. It’s there until it grows, or you have it cut. There are no instant remedies if you don’t like what’s on your head as you’re walking out the door. So what do you do if your partner gives you a negative re-

sponse to a new look? What if your friend tells you your new colour isn’t doing you any favours, or if your new haircut just isn’t you? It’s the same as if you were trying on a new dress in a shop. If you are on your own, it’s obviously your decision and your opinion as to what you look like. Or do you take a friend and let her tell you what to wear? Your image is simply that: YOUR IMAGE! What looks back at you in the mirror is how you see yourself, and it shouldn’t be about how others want to see you. I know we sometimes want to please our better halves, or impress a friend with how we look. But if YOU are not happy with what you see in the mirror, how can you expect to receive compliments? There have been many times when clients have left the salon happy with their hair. Yet three days later, I’m told: “My husband doesn’t like it.” It’s rather sad to hear that another person’s opinion can take someone from positive to negative in a matter of hours or days. If you are having your hair done in the salon

and you leave with a bounce in your step, don’t let anyone take that away. If you feel good with what’s going on with your look, keep that in your head if you receive a less-than-positive remark. Remember, many people would rather say something critical than give you a compliment - but that’s human nature. It’s harder to make someone feel on top of the world with a good thought, and much easier to give a silly or sarcastic comment about someone’s new hair-do. The end to my tale is that all three clients agreed that they didn’t ask their partners/ friends when choosing hair styles or colours. If the people close to them were to give an opinion, it would be taken on board - but they would go ahead with what they wanted. Good! YOUR image is your expression to the world. YOUR image is how you feel inside, and how you project that outwardly. Don’t let that be changed by those around you - especially those who don’t always have your best interests at heart.

Inkwell-filler monitor? That was power indeed

By Monica Dyson THE nativity play at my grandson’s school made me wonder just where the years have gone since I was at primary school!

Starting school in the Fifties was a shock. Until then we stayed at home with our mothers, who usually didn’t go out to work. There were no nursery places or pre-schools to wean us in gradually, like the children of today. As children turning five, it was often the first time we had been away from mother, and that first day at school was one of tears for us both. I lived close to school, but, in the days before anyone owned a car, many children walked quite a distance. It was a far cry from today, when an estimated 43% of primary school children are taken there by car. A recent survey stated that many children had never even been on a bus. My sister and I went home for lunch and never experienced school dinners, but dire stories are told of them. I can remember the steel containers being delivered, and the unappetising

smells that came from them - usually of cabbage! School dinners were basic and filling. There would be a plain main course with a pudding of rice, semolina or tapioca. There were no menus as today, and children were expected, just as they were at home, to eat what was put in front of them. Or go hungry. However, we weren’t exempt from the onethird pint of milk we were expected to drink

Host of entertainment from the Arona Lions

ARONA Lions club, Las Galletas and Costa del Silencio, are staging their monthly entertainment show on Sunday (8th Feb) at Clouseaus Bar, Palm Mar, from 2-8pm. Host and compere will be Club member Derrick, and an excellent afternoon’s live entertainment will be provided by Gordon

each day to supplement our diet. Although some people may remember those little bottles of milk with fondness, they seemed mostly to be detested by all. They were often left outside in the sun in crates and so developed a thick layer of cream on top. But there was always someone who welcomed yours, if you could pass it over before the teacher saw you. During winter the bottles would be completely iced up, the milk would be solid and you had to thaw it out near the radiators. The best way to drink the milk was by gulping it down while holding your nose so that you couldn’t taste it. In 1971, school milk was withdrawn by Margaret Thatcher’s government for children over seven, and for this she was dubbed “Thatcher, Thatcher, milk snatcher”. It was a great honour if you were chosen to be milk monitor, or even straw monitor. For the well-behaved pupil, there were a number of such roles, including blackboard monitor (when you could bang the rubber against the outside wall, getting a cloud of chalk dust on your clothes), pencilsharpener monitor, or even inkwell-filler moni-

tor! Power indeed! Even for young children, corporal punishment was considered permissible and could involve a cane or simply a ruler, which could cause a great deal of pain across the knuckles. Generally, it was instilled in us that we had not only to be wellbehaved but also polite and respectful. In those days parents sided with teachers, who were deemed omnipotent. They thought that if you’d been punished, then you must have done something to deserve it. Class sizes in the Fifties were large. Often, there were over 30 pupils in one class, being the Baby Boomer generation, born during or after the war. Children sat at desks, the teacher facing them and the blackboard behind. The “Three Rs”, reading, writing and arithmetic, were the

backbone of learning, and much of it chanted aloud. Although we didn’t know it at the time, we were subjected to a teaching method called Mnemonics. For instance the word HOMES would help us to remember the Great North America lakes. Huron/Ontario/Michigan/Erie and Superior. Now that was okay, but when it came to “My Very Eager Mother Just Served Us Nothing” as a means of remembering the planets - Mercury/ Venus/Earth/Mars/Jupiter/Saturn/Uranus/Neptune, that got a bit more complicated, especially when you couldn’t remember the original phrase anyway! There was a strong sense of Britishness in early schooldays. We learnt the history and geography of the Commonwealth, and mine being a Catholic school, great importance was placed on religion, with

weekly visits from the priest to hear Catechism. However, it was the Catholic religion only. We didn’t learn about any others. They weren’t a consideration. The daily routine was broken up by visits from the school nurse, who seemed preoccupied with nits, Her Majesty’s school inspectors, who gave us warnings about truancy, and the collection of money for our Post Office Savings Account. We also had collections for the Little Black Babies in Africa, despite not knowing where the money went, and for “Sunny Smiles’”,which was to help support children in orphanages in the UK. You collected photos of happy, smiling children who had been helped by your generosity. Before the age of 11, we were streamed into those most likely to pass the Eleven-Plus exam - always a contentious method of school selection - and the others. Those children who were not thought of as Grammar School material were often ignored by the teachers, although many went on to become extremely successful in life ... and probably own a holiday home in Tenerife!

No paws for thought at K9 IT was a busy January at K9 Animal Sanctuary. There are rarely any empty kennels and when there are, they fill quickly with the cast-offs of human society.

In their eyes, you see love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal. Like Bailey, a sweet-natured, gentle dog who arrived at K9 heavily pregnant and gave birth to her pups the same day. It’s essential dogs are chipped WE can never stress enough the importance of micro-chipping your pet and having the correct, updated information logged with Zoocam. This gorgeous cocker mix was found wandering the streets of La Camella and has no chip. If you are the owner, or recognise this dog, please contact the refuge on the number printed. A very-underweight Canarian hunting dog also arrived at the refuge with no chip, making it impossible to trace its owner. It is a legal requirement in Tenerife to have your dog microchipped, and spotchecks are being made by the police. So please take time to ensure your pet’s information is fully updated. We’re in the loop at last! AFTER many years of wanting a shop on the Golf del Sur, we have now secured one at Golf Park, on the loop road just before the lottery kiosk. Come and check us out on on Monday, 23rd February, from 1pm, at our opening party. We need anything that can help us to fit the shop out - shop furniture, hanging rails and also, an unwanted iron, ironing board and masses of coat hangers. On top of this, donations of good quality second-hand clothes, books, dvds, etc. We still have shops in Los Cristianos, CalleRevron near Churchills Bar, and San Eugenio opposite Hotel La Nina by Amandas bar at lasCarabelas complex. Both shops open from 10am-4pm Monday to

Friday, and until 3pm on Saturday and Sunday. Come and have a browse, bag a bargain and help the animals. Dog of the Week WHO could deny that face? For a dog full of character, look no further than Robin, a twoyear-old cross-breed of medium size. He has never had a real home and has been with us since a pup. Go on, make 2015 his year! For more information, call Sue on 629 388 102. Whale and Dolphin trip We have chartered the Mustcat catamaran on Sunday, 21st February, and we’ll be having a private party sailing from Las Galletas, but at 1pm and not the previously stated 2.30pm. If you are bothered by the thought of whales and dolphins being kept in captivity and per-

forming tricks for food, come out with us and see them in their natural environment. Tickets cost 20 euros, including drinks, for the three-hour excursion, which is less than half the normal price. A donation from the proceeds will be made to Sea Shepherd, to recognise the outstanding work they do to preserve our oceans and marine life. Fun doggie weekend As you know, our dog show is now a weekend event, starting on Saturday, 7th March, with a basic obedience course from 3pm, along with an “Ask the Vet” session. This will be followed at noon the next day by our Fun Dog Show, in collaboration with San Miguel Town Hall. Both events will be held next to the Cultural Centre at Llano del Camello. It’s just two euros to enter your pooch, so come and have an enjoyable afternoon with us. As our last dog show was so successful, we have added a fancy dress category, which should be fun. For more info on both events, call Sue on 629 388 102.

Driving licences: Problems solved

By Emma at Motorworld

THERE is still some confusion about the legal changes regarding the exchange of drivers’ licences. So I will endeavour to clarify the situation.

Firstly, if you have held a Certificado de Residencia for two years or more, regardless of how long is left to run on your UK licence, it is now obligatory for you to exchange your current licence for a Spanish version. In the past, it was possible to have a foreign licence inscripted as registered in Spain. But this is no longer possible under the new laws, and your only option is to exchange the licence for a Spanish one. Also obligatory since 19th January is a medical for every driver, re-

gardless of age or when your licence expires. These can be done in any Reconocdomiento Medico - special centres which deal solely with medicals for drivers and those requiring gun licences. There are quite a few of these cen-

tres around the South of the Island - in La Camella, Los Cristianos, Adeje and Las Galletas to name but a few. Many people are worried that they will not pass the test, or that is complicated. Actually, they are quite straight-

forward and are nothing to worry about. It involves a hearing and sight test (similar to those carried out by opticians), and a reaction test, along with some questions about your medical history. For instance, tablets

being taken, operations you may have had, etc. People holding a white NIE form only, who have never been registered on the Padron at their local town hall, will be considered a tourist, even if they have a car in their name. In these circumstances, it would not be necessary for them to obtain a Spanish licence. People who have not held a Green Residencia for two years, or have a white NIE form only, can voluntarily exchange their licence voluntarily, even though they do not fall under the obligatory category of the new laws. To start the exchange process, photocopies of the relevant documentation must be presented in Tráfico to be sent to the UK or other countries to verify that the licence is in order, and the position regarding any points collected, which may be applicable to the licence. In the past, if 45 days

had passed and no verification had been received, an exchange could be completed. But Tráfico will no longer carry out exchanges until it receives a verification, no matter how long this takes. Trafico officials estimate a minimum of 4-6 weeks before a response is received. Obviously, all countries differ and it’s just a question of waiting. Some countries used to be able to exchange a licence without verification, such as France. But this no longer applies because licences in all countries in line with these new European laws have to be verified. This, of course, is causing a backlog in Tráfico as staff do not have the resources to deal with this sudden influx of work. Boys and Girls:

There are four possibilities for two children, with equal probabilities: first child: second child: 1 girl girl 2 girl boy 3 boy girl 4 boy boy The fourth possibility drops out, because Ronald and Michelle have a daughter (so either the first or the second child is a girl). Therefore, three possibilities remain, of which in one case the other child is also a girl. As a result, the probability is 1/3 (about 33%).

Beer and Bitterballs On a nice summer day, two tourists visit the Dutch city of Gouda. During their tour through the center, they spot a cozy terrace. They decide to have a drink and, as an appetizer, a portion of hot “bitterballs” (bitterballs are a Dutch delicacy, similar to croquettes). The waiter tells them that the bitterballs can be served in portions of 6, 9, or 20. What is the largest number of bitterballs that cannot be ordered in these portions?

The total number of toes is 5170. 1

Riddles Rowing Across the River Patrick and Eric are on the two opposite banks of a river. They both have a rowing boat. They both start at the same time towards the opposite bank. They pass each other at 180 meters from the bank where Patrick departed. When reaching the opposite bank, they both take a rest for the same amount of time before they return. On the way back, they pass each other at 100 meters from the bank from where Patrick returned. Patrick and Eric both row with a constant speed, but Eric rows faster. How wide is the river?

Let the length of the bridge be x meters. Running towards the train, Charles covers 0.5x-10 meters in the time that the train travels x-4 meters. Running away from the train, Charles covers 0.5x+2 meters in the time that the train travels 2x-8 meters. Because their speeds are constant, the following holds: (0.5x-10) / (x-4) = (0.5x+2) / (2x-8) Brain Training: which can be rewritten to 0.5x2 - 24x + 88 = 0 Using the quadratic formula we find Beginner: 84 that x=44, so the railway-bridge has a Intermediate: 81 Advanced: 111 length of 44 meters. It’s Agne for Tenerife By Roscoe

Albacete 3 CD Tenerife 2

AFTER an unlucky defeat last Saturday with a depleted team, the curtain has finally come down on the managerial reign of Alvaro Cervera.

After 110 competitive matches, fan power and short-sightedness from the Tenerife media have seen the Cevera era end amid bizarre scenes. On Tuesday he said his farewells. The backroom staff wept and the players, to a man, gave him a standing ovation. Even at the press conference to announce the decision, President Miguel Concepcion admitted: “Whoever comes in will be no better than Cervera. He is a gentleman and a professional and the best coach during my time in this position.” Cervera’s farewell letter showed his class: “Everything in life has a beginning and an end. Today, my time as coach concludes. I go with many memories and joys and most importantly the satisfaction of having served two-anda-half seasons on the bench for CD Tenerife. “Being the coach who has been in charge for the second greatest number of league matches, overseeing the return to professional football in June 2013 and completing a great campaign last year. “It’s time to thank the President for his support, trust, closeness and affection that he has always shown me since the first day I met him. Similarly, all the players. I grew up on the island, so certainly, I have always been and will remain so a man with CD Tenerife in me. I wish you well. “A blue and white hug.” I made my thoughts on this subject crystalclear last week. I just pray that this stunning dismissal doesn’t bite

us on the ass in June. Club captain Suso said: “It was a very sad day because it is something that affects us all. Alvaro has demonstrated his ability to lead this group and achieved the goals we set out to do. “We went up and, subsequently, stayed in the league. This season’s results have not gone well, but we appreciated everything he did for this club. “We were with him. The main culprits are the players. He brought out the best in me, and I will be eternally grateful.” He is replaced by Raul Agne in what seems like another strange decision. By my reckoning, he was at least fourth choice. Dnipro assistant manager Juan Ramon Lopez Muniz was happy to stay as Juande Ramos’s deputy. Then Athletico B boss José Ángel ‘Cuco’ Ziganda said No. And former Mallorca manager Lluís Carreras held talks before Agne got the job.

Agne did okay at Girona, where he took them into the second division. He was sacked after a year, despite keeping them up, and he soon pitched up at Recreativo. But he left them after a forgettable six months and then joined Cadiz. They are the biggest side in Spain outside the top two divisions and he was charged with getting them promotion. After 18 months, he was again given the Spanish Archer (El-Bow) after falling out with everyone. And I mean everyone. The Cadiz media were sharing some interesting tales on Twitter this week. That said, a couple of former Tenerife players have spoken up for Agne. Cechu, who worked with him at Girona, said: “During the week, he always worked hard with the defence. We would work on the opponents’ attack and how to stop them, after studying a lot of action on video.

“Later in the week, it would be about how to hurt them. How can we put the opponent in trouble? He was one of the best coaches I’ve had and he is a demandPosition

ing coach. “He supports his teams to ‘take the lead’ in the field. Force the play. He is very offensive and takes into account crucial things like set-pieces.”

Former captain Kiko Raton said in a similar vein: “He is an outstanding coach and Tenerife has made a very good choice with him. He likes to play like Barcelona. Pass, pass and then squeeze. “The longer you have the ball, the less risk you create for your adversary. He prefers 4-33 and it’s about scoring goals.” Let’s hope they are right. For his part, Agne said at his unveiling: “I will try to play attacking football, because to win you have to score goals. But we will try not to lose the order defensively and everything good that Álvaro Cervera has left. Which is a lot. “It’s a twist of fate that my first game is against Girona! But for me, Girona is secondary. If we win 5-0, then great. If we win 1-0 then great. But my aim is to win.” Girona are on a good run and it will be interesting to see how they get on with such a small squad. As Eibar showed last season, the little teams can go up. They are tidy, wellorganised, but for me, nothing special. Agne knows that and it will be interesting to see how the players perform for him this weekend. It could be the most important 90 minutes of the season.

Phoenix Bar’s double trouble THE Phoenix Bar and Bar 180 A staged a titanic battle as the Premier League’s top two drew swords in Los Abrigos.

tures left, the title is almost there for Bar 180 A, while Phoenix don’t play again until 4th March and will probably have sunk to fourth place by then. Target Army and The Pub both enjoyed hefty wins to narrow the gap in the top four, and Vikings Ensecan ensured their mid-table finish by beating Target Titans. With Trap Door sitting it out, Ourplace Playboys took the chance to open up a sizeable gap at the top of Division 1, taking six points from Pas O Nadas. And don’t write off the Shamrocks, either. The slightly wobbly patch they went through a few weeks back is now a distant memory.

Boss man Richard took the first point for the visitors, but that was to prove the only singles game they won. Missed doubles, and a fine win for young Johnny over Tom, gave Phoenix a 4-1 lead. The match then turned on its head as the home side contrived to miss a few doubles themselves, and the 180 boys dug deep to square the match at 4-4. Great stuff! They showed that by bashing Gaffers A 7-1, which will put them in good stead for their match this week against Trap Door! Clouseaus, trying desperately to avoid the drop, put in a fine performance to beat Summerlands, but Sundowners’ 6-2 defeat at Emerald Lounge keeps them firmly rooted to the bottom. Naughty Nautas look to be safe, picking up a handy five points from Picassos. As Waterfall Warriors sat at home with a good book, The Palms were comfortably beating the Playgirls and taking top spot in Division 2. This may well be just a temporary arrangement. The Palms don’t

have a game this week! But it is surely squeakybum time, as they say, although maybe not for Chipeque Chippers. They virtually blew any chance of glory by being held to a draw, thanks a good effort from Phoenix Flights. Palms Sports Bar have had a good season, and will want to round it off in style. A 6-2 victory over Marilyns will almost certainly see them finish fourth, Finally, hat-tip of the week goes to Barracuda Hunters, who made the arduous journey down to face The Rebels, and enjoyed a rather surprising 5-3 win. Watch out for these guys in the John Lowe handicap!

Diego ban Costa plenty! AFTER the excitement and shocks of the FA Cup 4th round, we settled back into Premier League action last weekend. And it proved a costly weekend for one or two of our managers in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League as the FA moved quickly to ban Chelsea’s Diego Costa for three games after finding him guilty of stamping on an opponent’s ankle in the League Cup semi-final against Liverpool.

Many managers then forgot to transfer him out of their team and left themselves a striker short! Arsenal led the way in the point-scoring team of the week after their 5-0 demolition of Aston Villa, contributing three players. Newcastle and Sunderland were close behind with two players apiece, with the rest of the team comprising Stoke, Man Utd, Swansea and Spurs. In the League title

battle, Nicky Abbott’s Boomtown Rabz scored a creditable 74 points to move into top spot, although they lead by just seven 7 points. And we see, week-in, week-out, how quickly this can change. He went close two weeks ago only to be pipped by a point. But this week he led the way quite comfortably to be the team of the week. Yes, the honour goes to Roscoe! His Roscoe’s Wanderers logged an

impressive 90 points. And he got his team selection spot-on because just five players accounted for the majority of those points, Walters, Eriksen, Sterling, Carzola and Giroud all scoring double-figure totals. Nicky and Roscoe are old school classmates. Maybe there is something in them Dorset genes? But how did that see him fare in the battle for the Oasis Fm bragging rights? He has

made up ground, yet stills remains last. But the gap to John Zammit has been cut to just one point.

Chris Elkington has dropped down to second spot and Adi Benson reclaimed the lead, but only by three points.

Still life in the old-timers

“THERE’S life in the old dog yet” is a statement never more apt than in the Direct Telecom Pool League following Tuesday night’s games.

League leaders Gaffers A were last week held to a draw, giving rivals Hammers A a chance to narrow the gap, which they did. However, the gap is now back to six points after the Hammers came up against a resilient Phoenix Potters team. The Los Abrigos oldtimers had eased their aching joints with Ralgex and stocked up on Werther’s Originals and it worked! No matter how hard the visitors tried, they could not open up a gap as frames were traded. The match finished allsquare, with a very good point earned by the Potters. Gaffers A had no such problems as they put Hammers C to the sword 11-1. This proved disastrous for Tony and his team as this loss dropped them to the bottom of the table. The match of the night took place on Golf del Sur between Waterfall Rebels and the Phoenix. There is certainly no

love lost between these teams after an non-amicable split in the summer of the old Phoenix Knights. The home team slightly edged it on the night, but from what I am hearing, a certain amount of luck was involved. But they still got the win, which meant a setback for the Phoenix’s quest to cement third spot. But the game was played in good spirit and it seems as though all the hard feelings are gone! One or two of the league’s higher-placed teams had off-nights. Inn the Pink A travelled to Palms B, but couldn’t capitalise on Phoenix’s loss. They found it tough going against Shai’s team, the match eventually ending in a draw. Treehouse A also couldn’t better their points tally as they took on Exiles B on a chilly Silencio evening. The home team are more adjusted to the conditions and never looked troubled as they took a solid 8-4 win. In the remaining two matches, both Terrace Bar teams were in action at home because of a last-minute change of venue for the A team. And it would seem that they like the second table. The B team,

Early frame losses meant they were always on the back foot and they never recovered, eventually losing 8-4, with Pete and Penguin both securing hattricks for Palms A. This gave the A team a chance to shine, and they took it with both hands, racing into a 4-0 lead against Peacocks. The visitors rallied and nicked a couple of frames back, but it was always going to difficult and Terrace A eventually got the seventh frame they needed. It was a

welcome three points, which moved them off bottom spot. And if that weren’t enough, Mal won a game! In Division Two, leaders Sporting Jester A had a night off, giving second-place Bluebell A a chance to narrow the gap. But it was not to be. Gaffers B having been playing some good pool and are proving hard to beat, as Bluebell found out. It was a close game and the draw looked on, but Gaffers dug deep and, in the end, dragged themselves over the line to gain a good victory. Waterfall Jokers have

Dreamers tried to get a foot-hold back in the game, but their opponents were too strong. Fortunately, the home team took one frame to avoid the whitewash. Tenerife Pool Tables have taken advantage of a Division One team folding and recruited a couple of players. It worked well on Tuesday night as they took on Hoppy’s Bar, well-established in mid-table, and came away with a decent win. Nick and his team will hope to capitalise on this and see if they can attain an unlikely finish in the top half of the table. Sporting Jester B stepped out of their A team’s shadow against Inn the Pink B. Down towards the bottom of the table, they have huffed and puffed this season

without much end result and can count themselves unlucky in a few of their games. But they were too good for a strong Pink side they will be brimming with confidence after a decent 7-5 result. This weekend sees the annual International Challenge against the Scotland squad. Competition has been fierce to make the team and there are some fine players who have not made the cut. The Direct Telecom team won last year and are favourites to lift the trophy again on Sunday. The first leg gets underway at 7pm at Palms Bar in Torviscas on Saturday. Premier League preview

By Adi Benson WITH just 15 Premier League games to go, the action is really starting to hot up at both ends of the table.

We have five teams fighting for two Champions League spots at the top, while at the bottom, just six points cover eight teams. This means we are looking at one of the tightest finishes to a season we have seen for a while. Spurs v Arsenal Tottenham are two points behind Arsenal, so this North London derby is not just about bragging rights but also League places. The home team will be pushing for early goals, and Harry Kane is the man they are banking on to provide them and to improve on his tally of 20 so far this season. He has just signed a new contract and is full of confidence. Arsenal have hit a rich vein of form at the right time and look good for a top-four finish. Stars are back from injuries and they are playing as a team. For me, the defence is still suspect but Arsenal will be hoping Paulista can adjust to the Premiership quickly. Prediction: Draw Leicester v C Palace The phrase “sixpointer” will be used a lot between now and the end of the season, but it describes certain games perfectly, and this is one of them. Leicester are bottom of the league, and if they are to survive, they need to take points from games against their nearest rivals, starting now. They have bolstered their attack in the transfer window and hope it will be enough to keep them safe. Palace had been going well under new manager Alan Pardew, but they stumbled last week against Everton, leaving them still in the relegation fight. A win

Can Harry Kane Arsenal stars?

for them could really open some daylight up in terms of their own fight for survival, but a loss drags them in to the thick of it. Prediction: Home win Swansea v Sunderland Swansea tried to drag themselves into the mix for a Europa League place with a good win against Southampton. But they’re a little too inconsistent for me, and they are five points from where they need to be. I cannot see them making that up. They haven’t spent the Wilfried Bony money and look light in attack, so I wonder where the goals will come from. Sunderland helped their cause last week with three points against fellowstrugglers Burnley. They need to keep the momentum going, but the Liberty is a difficult place to get a result. I suspect they would take a point, but they need a win because if results go against them, they will be in real trouble. Prediction: Home win QPR v Southampton There was no wheelerdealing done by ”onest ”Arry on deadline day and, without new recruits, I think QPR are destined for the drop. I have never rated Redknapp as a manager because he never takes responsibility for anything: It’s the pitch, or ref or players, and that short-sightedness is why they are fighting relegation. But with his resignation this week, can the club turn it around? The Saints hope to bounce straight back after an unexpected home defeat by Swansea, especially as Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool are all circling, ready to take fourth spot. A loss of form now could prove disastrous and see them move backwards. But Koeman is a good manager and he will ensure they are well prepared.

Prediction: Away win Man City v Hull City had a chance to narrow the gap on Chelsea last week after the two teams faced off, but it ended in a draw, which suited their opponents better. Now, it is a case of ensuring they win their games and hope their rivals drop points. They need to play better though, and I believe they should rest Vincent Kompany. He has been off-form for a few weeks and is costing them goals. Hull cannot buy a win at the minute, and Steve Bruce is coming under increasing pressure. He will not look forward to this fixture. It will be damage limitation with the hope of pinching a draw, but his team are weak at the back, which is surprising considering he was a defender. Will he be the next manager out of a job? Prediction: Home win Aston Villa v Chelsea It doesn’t rain but it pours on Villa, thumped by Arsenal last week and this week welcoming league leaders Chelsea. Paul Lambert slammed

his players after that last game, accusing them of giving up, so he has some task to prepare them for this one. I can see a few injuries appearing in training! This should be a walk in the park for Chelsea, and a good introduction to the League for newboy Juan Cuadrado. But they need to be wary because this is a potential banana skin if they take it too easy. Complacency is not a Chelsea trait, but they let their guard down against Bradford and look what happened! Prediction: Away win Everton v Liverpool Everton have picked up a couple of good results recently, especially last week’s win against Palace which moved them a step closer to safety. They will be up for this derby clash, especially as they took a point in the reverse fixture. Aaron Lennon has joined on loan and he’ll be keen to get his career back on track. What better way to impres Liverpool, the League’s form team, welcomed back Daniel

Sturridge last week after a five-month gap and were rewarded with a goal from the prolific striker, But is he fit enough to start a game yet? Liverpool need to ensure they keep winning because three points here could see them take a step closer to fourth, especially with Spurs and Arsenal playing each other. Prediction: Away win Burnley v West Brom In recent games, we have seen a resilient Burnley team picking up points and dragging themselves out of the bottom three. But they were poor against Sunderland last week and cannot afford any more repeat performances. They have done well to keep Danny Ings after he was linked with several clubs as he is key to their survival hopes. West Brom are another team involved at the bottom, and they know that if they lose here, dependent on other results, they could find themselves in the bottom three. Tony Pulis has been here and

done it before, though, so he knows what is required. His teams are hard to beat and they should come away with at least a point. Prediction: Draw Newcastle v Stoke A good win last week saw John Carver get his time as Newcastle coach off to a winning start. But this will be a little more difficult as they are up against tough, physical opponents. Have Newcastle any players left, or have they all joined Rangers? Joking aside, they have a decent enough squad and it’s been great to see Ayoze Perez establish himself as a starter. But this will test whether he can handle a physical game. Stoke looked good against QPR, and Jon Walters managed their only Premier League hat-trick so far. They will want more of the same this time out. They will enjoy this game as both teams can mix it up, and Stoke are at their best when the going gets tough. Prediction: Draw West Ham v Man Utd Hammers are just starting to lose their way a little bit in the league and are slipping backwards. But I always felt that a topfour finish was always going to be beyond them. They are also picking up injuries and are being investigated over playing Diafro Sakho in the FA Cup after he pulled out of his national team injured. It could see them kicked out, but Big Sam loves a siege mentality, and they are also a bogey team for this opposition. Man Utd are third, but they’re still not playing well and the chasing pack are now starting to hit form. They need to continue winning points before the matches against their rivals come around, because that is where I think they will start to slip. Prediction: Home win
