The Timelord shoots vital tenerife scenes Continued from front.

Jenna Coleman and Michelle Gomez were joined by Peter Capaldi, who is the 12th man to play the iconic title role.

There has been a media black-out surrounding the filming for the new episodes - but in the modern world, social media will always find you out! The crew spent four days shooting in the north of Tenerife on the first two episodes, which have the working titles of The Magician’s Apprentice and The Witch’s Familiar. Both episodes, directed by Hettie MacDonald, were written by Stephen Moffat. Most of the filming was carried out in Garachico, and the crew stayed in Hotel El Nogal and Hotel Vincci Seleccion during their visit. The main filming will take place in the usual Cardiff studios, and some Doctor Who fan websites have been speculating on why filming has been taking place here. One theory is that the Tenerife landscape could be representing the planet of Karn. As fans of the show will know, Karn was once a colony planet of Gallifrey. It was first seen in the episode, The Brain of Morbius, and it is thought that the new stories will see its return. Jenna Coleman’s stay here generated a plethora of stories in the UK papers. She was expected to quit the show last year, but eventually revealed she would stay for one

more series. She has been in the show since 2012 and got her big break as a young actress in Emmerdale. In fact, she caught up with her former colleague and Emmerdale actor Ben Freeman in Tenerife this week when he visited the Doctor Who shoot. It is understood that Freeman was not filming any scenes for the series, but a picture on Twitter showed him posing with Coleman and Capaldi. Coleman’s character, Cara, will get more prominence in the new episodes, and the actress is delighted. “It’s wonderful,” she said. “I get a whole other series of stories with the Doctor and I couldn’t walk away with the story being unresolved - and there is so much more to do. “I think they’ve finally just reached a point where they really understand each other.” Most of the pictures of the shooting show Coleman working with actress Michelle

Gomez, who plays Missy, a female incarnation of The Master. Some mobile phone footage shows the pair arguing in a deserted village square. Missy is protected by bodyguards and confronts Cara in what appears to be a key scene. Other filming took place in a more desolate area of Tenerife, inside Teide National Park, which has a barren background landscape. It is this section of filming which has got fans speculating that there could be a tie-in with the planet Karn. Even though Peter Capaldi has been in Tenerife, there have been no pictures, or leaks, about what he has been shooting. In total, there were over 50 cast and crew involved in the shoot. Some were sourced locally, via the respected Sur Film Production & Services company, and s o m e

local extras were also used. The filming of such an important TV show will only add gravitas to the claim that the Canary Islands is set to become a major filming destination. A host of Hollywood films have been here recently. Last year, Oscar-winning director Ron Howard filmed In The Heart Of The Sea in Tenerife and La Gomera. The film is based on a true story of an 1820 event, in which a sperm whale attacked a ship, stranding the crew at sea for 90 days. It opens around the world at Christmas. Tenerife Cabildo President Carlo Alonso said: “The filming of Doctor Who is proof that Tenerife is a privileged place for producing television and films. “Not only do we have great weather all year round, but we also have a scenic variety. Also, we offer professionals and companies on the Island these first-rate audiovisual abilities.” He added: “We can provide support and production guarantees of the highest level.”

Just my luck! Two weeks ago I was enjoying a family holiday in Tenerife and Dr Who comes over after I leave!

There will be some people who are asking what all the fuss is about. Let me tell you, this is a big deal. Tenerife is getting used to movie production companies setting up and all the hype surrounding whichever star is associated with it. “Clash of the Titans” being just one example. A few months of employment for locals is always a good thing but after the movie’s release we all have a greyed out copy on DVD for the memories. That could all change with the visit of the cast of the longest running and most popular Sci-Fi show in the world. Yes you read that correctly, THE WORLD. Do not underestimate the popularity of Dr Who as the days of it being simply for kids to hide behind the sofa on a Saturday evening are long gone. It’s also a very valuable franchise which leaves ripples wherever it goes. The fact the Doctor, Peter Capaldi, has been filming scenes here will be huge for the island in the future. One theory is the island’s landscape is being used for scenes as the plan-

et Gallifrey which as any fan knows is the where the Doctor was born. It was destroyed during the invasion of the Daleks, and the Doctor was the final time lord. Until the special episode celebrating 50 years of Dr Who when all incarnations of the Dr got together, went back in time and saved the planet. They have hidden his home world and even he has forgotten where it is. This is going to be huge for the show. How is this going to be huge for Tenerife? When this airs around the world I guarantee that the Tenerife economy will notice a big difference. Visitors from around the world will want to be part of the Doctor’s home planet. Visitor numbers will rise, and it’ll be great for everyone. How can I be so sure of this? Dr Who fans are exactly that. Fanatical and I’m one. I can’t wait for these episodes to be aired and Tenerife getting the attention it so rightly deserves. Look at it this way. Star Wars only filmed a few scenes in Tunisia and to this day, tours of the areas used in production make millions. Game of Thrones is filmed just up the road from me and visitors to Northern Ireland have jumped sky high because of this. This may be just the beginning of the Dr Who legacy in Tenerife.

SPAIN’S Government Ministers have approved most of the important measures on the “Social Agenda”.

These include the “second-chance” mechanism, the reduction in National Insurance contributions for permanent employment contracts, subsidies for the reconciliation of work and home life of independent contractors and the extension of “family cheques”, announced by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy last week. Ministers have also agreed to eliminate court fees for individuals. Government VicePresident Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría underlined at this week’s Cabinet Meet-

6th March - 12th March 2015

PM’s State o pledges given ing that some of the “essential contents” the PM announced had been approved. These measures come within the framework of the key objectives for this, the final year of his party’s legislature. “We need to repay to the Spanish people some of the efforts made during the crisis and pass on the effects of the improvement

in the economy to the weakest sectors,” she said. “These include job creation, and the transfer of the recovery to families through an important social agenda and structural reforms.” For the first time, a specific system is established to resolve the insolvency of individuals, through “mecha-

nisms to help individuals and families overcome their indebtedness as quickly as possible and thus start again”, added the VicePresident. Luis de Guindos, Economic Affairs Minister, said: “This process, which in the last instance, is to write off the debt, is possible because the situation of the Spanish financial system has changed, and provisions for loans are now much greater.” Firstly, out-of-court payment agreements are extended and made more flexible, as is the possibility of making arrangements with creditors so that it becomes faster and simpler to restructure debts. In addition to business owners and companies, this route can also be taken by individuals. “During the time in which the

Greek puzzle for Rajoy

A BAFFLED Mariano Rajoy has responded to accusations from Greece’s leftist Prime Minister that Spain and Portugal led a conservative conspiracy to topple his anti-austerity government.

Alexis Tsipras believes Spain and Portugal took a hard line in talks on the euro zone extending the Greek bailout programme because they feared the rise of the left in their own countries. Greeks have directed much of their fury about years of austerity dictated by international creditors at

Germany, the biggest contributor to their country’s 240bn-euro bailout. But in a speech to his Syriza party, which won an election in January, Tsipras turned on Madrid and Lisbon, accusing them of attempting to sabotage the negotiations for political reasons. The Greece leader said: “We found opposing us an axis of powers, led by the governments of Spain and Portugal which, for obvious political reasons, attempted to lead the entire negotiations to the brink. “Their plan was, and is, to wear down, topple or bring our government to unconditional surrender before our work begins to bear fruit, and before the

Greek example affects other countries. And mainly before the election in Spain.” But Rajoy maintained that Spain had shown solidarity with Greece as part of the euro zone by helping with its bailout. And he urged Greece to fulfil its obligations and keep its promises. “We are not responsible for the frustration generated by the radical Greek left that promised the Greeks something it couldn’t deliver on,” he said, pointedly. The Greek Government sought to play down the row, saying Tsipras was obliged to tell Greeks how the negotiations went, and that his comments had been misinterpreted. “The new Greek gov-

ernment does not categorise European countries and people as friends or enemies,” said a government official. “Any misinterpretation of the Greek Prime Minister’s speech does not help the dialogue.” Spain, Portugal and Ireland have faced stringent austerity programmes and structural reforms, in return for European assistance - in Spain’s case, for its troubled banking system. Tsipras rejected criticism that Athens had staged a climbdown to secure an extension of its financial lifeline from the euro zone, saying anger among German conservatives showed that his government had won concessions.

negotiation of these extra-judicial agreements takes place, enforcement proceedings on assets necessary to carry on the business activity, including primary residences, are suspended,” stressed the Minister. A judicial re-structuring mechanism is also established to allow individuals, whether entrepreneurs or not, to be released from outstanding debts by employing assets they own at the time an agreement is reached, with the intervention of a judge, provided certain requirements are met. Moreover, prescription periods for personal debts are reduced from 15 to five years. The aim, said Luis de Guindos, “is to reconcile the interests of creditors and debtors, maintaining a culture of payment while also taking into account that, on many occasions, excessive debt led debtors to become stigmatised”. Another raft of measures under this new legislation relates to the Code of Best Practices for mortgage debtors which, according to the data provided by De Guindos, has already resulted in 12,000 debt re-structurings, 3,500 donations in payment and freezing the seizure of more than 12,000 properties. The new criteria will now be made more flexible for accessing these properties, and cases of particular vulnerability will be extended to include those over the age of 60. The Economic Affairs Minister estimated that the number of beneficiaries would, thus, virtually double. The new legislation removes “floor clauses” on mortgages for debtors below the

new threshold established in the Code, and extends the moratorium on evictions from primary residences of the most vulnerable groups until 2017. On another note, the Decree Law includes various initiatives on employment issues announced by Rajoy in the Debate on the State of the Nation. New, permanent employment contracts will enjoy a reduction in National Insurance contributions. The first 500 euros of salary will be exempt and, in excess of this amount, a sliding scale will be applied - leading to greater savings for those on the lowest salaries. The Government’s VicePresident said that under this new measure, there would be a progressive reduction in the labour cost of social contributions. And this discount will also be compatible with the discount included under the programme for the labour reinsertion of the long-term unemployed. Also, to reconcile home and work life, a new subsidy will be established for independent contractors who need to reduce their

of the Nation n green light working day in order to care for children under the age of seven, or for family members under their charge in a situation of dependence. For one year, they will enjoy a 100% discount in National Insurance contributions for common contingencies if they hire a worker to maintain their economic activity. Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría quoted a 3,000euro saving for each independent contractor. At a labour level, the new legislat i o n re-

duces from 35 to 20 the number of days worked necessary to be eligible to receive a farming subsidy. De Santamaría justified the measures because of the low production of the olive campaign last year. She also specified that the measure will be applied in Andalusia and Extremadura to those workers who had paid 20 actual days of contributions in the previous 12 months. The number of beneficiaries will exceed 56,000. The legislation also provides for measures to support families on tax issues. “Family cheques” of 1,200 euros per annum will be extended to single-parent families with two children,” she said. “And the tax break for large families, and those with ascendants or descendants with a disability, is extended to those cases in which taxpayers are pensioners or unemployed with an entitlement to receive benefits.” As a measure to support NGOs and other types of not-forp r o fit

organisations, it was agreed that those entities and institutions of this nature with income below 50,000 euros will be excluded from making a Corporate Income Tax return. The government approved a Royal Decree Law exempting individuals from paying court fees in all jurisdictions - and at all levels - to avoid citizens from not resorting to the justice system on economic grounds. The Minister for Justice argued that eliminating these fees responds to a widespread claim from both citizens and professionals that the Government has seen fit to include. The new legislation will come into force immediately and will not be delayed, “to avoid intermediary phases for which it is hard to plan.” Rafael Catalá said court fees “are not for collection purposes” and the revenue obtained from them goes into a “collective fund that pays for public services. And as with any tax, they are not designed for any specific purpose”. He also stressed that it was not substantiated that the current legislation on fees had any direct or immediate impact on litigiousness. The Council of Ministers submitted to Parliam e n t t h e

Draft Law on the Recovery and Resolution of Credit Institutions and Investment Service Companies, in which Spain adapts to European law regarding Banking Union. The aim is to create a common European framework that preserves financial stability and minimises the cost to the taxpayer of any possible banking crisis. De Guindos stressed that if this law had been in force before, Spain would not have had to inject “a single euro into the Spanish banks”. The text establishes a new system for taking on losses for the creditors of these institutions, and also creates a National Resolution

Fund that will contribute to the corresponding European fund, the cost of which will be covered by the banks themselves. Institutions must have recovery plans (without the need for external aid) and resolution plans (for serious difficulties), which will be revised at least on an annual basis. The Single Resolution Mechanism, which comes into force in 2016, will supervise 90% of Spanish institutions. The Fund for Orderly Bank Re-structuring (FROB) will be the relevant national authority, with an independent chairman appointed by the Council of Ministers, while the Bank of Spain

will perform preventive functions. The Council of Ministers approved a Royal Decree that gives the go-ahead to the Efficient Vehicle Incentive Programme (Plan PIVE 7), in light of the positive response by consumers to the programme and the positive effect on the economy and the environment, according to claims made by the Government’s VicePresident. De Santamaría said that individuals, the self-employed, microenterprises and SMEs can sign up to the plan, with a provision of 175 million euros. The plan, basically, maintains the requirements of the previous plans, although it includes a new feature whereby “the beneficiary must hold the ownership of the vehicle to be scrapped for at least one year, prior to requesting the subsidy”. Thanks to the six previous editions of the PIVE Plan, 715,000 vehicles have been replaced and, following the PIVE 7 Plan, said De Santamaría: “The energy saving has amounted to 248 million litres of petrol per year; or 1.5 million barrels of petrol.”

National Police pounce upon pro-Russian Spanish gang EIGHT Spaniards suspected of fighting alongside pro-Russian forces in the Ukraine conflict, have been detained by the National Police.

The arrests of the group, aged 20-30, took place in Asturias, Catalonia, Extremadura, Murcia, Navarre and Madrid. Three suspects are former members of the Spanish armed forces, and one is confirmed to have been on the frontline, according to antiterrorist sources. The group, linked to several different communist organisations, had been supported by an unofficial pro-Russian European network. The police operation was completed after three of the men returned to Spain during February - the last of them arriving last week. Police sources have not stated whether Rafael Muñoz Pérez, 27, and Ángel Davilla-Rivas, 22, were among the detainees. The pair were last year confirmed to have joined the Vostok Battalion, under the orders of Igor Strelkov, head of the Armed Forces of the People’s Republic of Donetsk. The identification of the detainees was made simple because they often posted photos of themselves with military equipment on social networking sites. The eight men are believed to have taken

part in armed conflict in the Donbass region. They face charges of compromising the peace and interests of Spain, homicide, and possession of arms and explosives. Another group of young Spaniards, also pro-Russian and linked to communist movements, are thought to be preparing to journey to Ukraine. The operation is said to be similar to those taking place in other European countries, to prevent combatants travelling to war zones, and to dissuade those who might be considering such action. Sources have confirmed that the international network, with which the Spanish detainees were working, has connections in Germany, Italy and France, among other countries. Combatants have travelled from all of these countries to Ukraine, some of them via the so-called Ukraine AntiFascist Support Committee. A Spanish group of youngsters, operating as “anti-capitalists”, told Europa Press news agency last September that they had gone to eastern Ukraine to fight alongside pro-Russian separatists, in order to combat the “resurgence of the Fourth Reich in Europe”. They established the Carlos Palomino International Brigade, in honour of the antifascist Spanish youngster, who was stabbed to death by a neo-Nazi former soldier on the Madrid Metro.

Gender pay gap widens THE difference between what men and women earn in the Canaries is at its highest level for 13 years.

On average in the archipelago, there is a 17.03% difference in like-for-like pay cheques while in Spain the difference is 23.93% - the highest rate since 2002. In theory, this difference means that to get the same pension, a female worker must contribute 11½ years more work than her male counterpart. This is one of the findings of the UGT “Equal Work, Equal Receivable” research which shows that Spain is the “European champion” when it comes to an equality wage gap. Almudena Fontecha, a UGT spokesperson, said: “Not only do we again have to put up with 2002 levels, but this gap occurs when the employment rate is lower - ie, there are fewer women workers and they suffer a greater wage gap.” In real terms the gender pay gap implies that in 2012 women stopped receiving

27.783 million euros in salaries and would have to work an extra 79 days a year to earn the same as men. The report shows the evolution of the wage gap in gross annual remuneration for the period 2008-2012, and shows an increase of 2.08% in the five years UGT attributed to “the lack of equality policies” and “lack of enforcement of the law prohibiting such discrimination because there are no objective factors that explain these differences”. Fontecha added: “Women are reaching the training levels the labour market demands, but it seems that there is no level playing field in Spain. Let’s be clear - there is no objective reason why women are paid less. “On a part-time basis comparison, the UGT indicates that Spain reaches one of the highest levels of inequality on the continent. “The gender gap is 19.3%, compared with a European average of 16.5%. Only Hungary, Germany and Slovakia exceed 20%. “When taking into

consideration the gross annual wage, or fulltime work, the wage gap in Spain shoots up to 24%, and this affects two million women and 25% of Spanish workers.” Men are less represented in part-time work and, since the salaries of part-timers has been reduced because of the crisis, this is another factor that has hit female pay. The UGT warns: “The perversion of not achieving real equality between women and men carries the risk of applying suffering to women.” The report draws on annual surveys of wage structure from the National Institute of Statistics to show how the wage gap has increased between 2008 and 2012 in virtually all sectors. In education, the gap grew by 7.65% in five years, and in the health sector, it rose 6.02%. “The education sector has been the most affected by decreases in wages for the entire working population of this activity and where the wage gap has tripled in five years,” said Fontecha. Overall, the highest

rates of pay gap are in the category of “other services”, with a pay gap between men and women standing at 36.1%; followed by administrative and support service activities (33.21%), professional, scientific and technical (31.6%) activities; and health and social services (30.33%) activities. UGT says higher wage differences occur in occupations that require less skill, precisely the most feminised, as in the service sector, where unskilled tasks are performed by 80% of women, who charge 30.67 % less than their male peers. The situation is similar throughout the country. Of the 17 autonomous communities, only five are below the national average of 23.9%: Baleares (16.78%) and Canaries (17.03%) have the lowest rates, followed by Extremadura (19.38%), Madrid (21.55%) and Castilla-La Mancha (23.16%). On the opposite side, Aragon (29.98%), Navarra (29.57%), Cantabria (28.05%) and Asturias (28.04%) are the major differences.

China in our hands Eagle eye readers will notice a growing trend in the Canarian Weekly over the last few weeks. Stories about China are everywhere. The Chinese are coming!

Relations between Spain and China are at an all time high, the exact opposite of the relationship Britain has with the world’s fastest growing economic superpower. Prince William’s bridge building trip looks to have gone well in front of the cameras, but who knows what has been said behind closed doors. The relationship is frosty at best. There are no such problems for the Spanish government and they have really taken the lead. The train service linking the countries is brilliant and the Chinese adore all things Spanish. They literally cannot get enough of our food. I read last week that Spain’s food exports to China have rocketed 1,000% in a year. And it’s not just the traditional foods and wines that are being gobbled up. The Chinese adore offal, especially pig

stomach, intestine, ear, thigh bone, head and trotters. In the east they are prized delicacies and here is the kicker. It’s pure profit. Slaughter houses would throw all the offal away, but now it’s being exported, for top dollar, to China. In fact the demand for offal is so great that it’s leading to a surplus of the choice cuts that we enjoy. This is why for example pork chops are so cheap at the moment. And the Chinese links are being strengthened locally as well with the new agreement that Adeje has negotiated. I still don’t know why the Chinese get a raw deal. For me, you speak as you find. I’ve been to China and back in the day, I did some work for the Chinese Government. I loved the country, the people and the work ethic. Business with China should be encouraged and Spain’s revival will be accelerated because of these links. And I can testify to their love of offal. Let’s just say I’ve swallowed stranger things that a celebrity does in the jungle!

This Sunday will see the culmination of the work of the local Department of Equality with the celebration of the Adeje’s Women’s Equality Assembly in the Costa Adeje Centre for Tourism Development, the CDTCA, with the participation of groups representing the many thousands of women who live in the borough. Since the end of 2014 the councillor for equality, Desiderio Afonso and colleagues have been working to create an event that will bring together the women and men of Adeje who are concerned about equality issues. At the end of January 10 distinct working groups were formed representing all the women of the borough, and they have met in February to discuss matters of mutual interest. Other members of the council have also been playing a key role in the development of the idea and the advancement of the groups with councillors from the departments of education, culture, economic development and employment involved. The groups have been formed to reflect the diversity of women in the borough, and includes women in sport, rural women, older women, young women, women in culture, LGTB activ-

ists, and women born in other countries, with representatives from this group from England, Rumania, Russia, India, Venezuela, Colombia, and Ireland. Each group was charged with developing ten proposals that would reflect the main concerns of each group, priorities or questions that are not solely directed at the council, but at other public administrative bodies as well. Over 200 women took part in these initial sessions. All the proposals have been catalogued in a single document under the title “Mujeres para la igualdad. Construyamos el Adeje del futuro en igualdad” (Women for equality. We will build an Adeje of the future based on equality), and will be presented to the

assembly on Sunday, and to the borough in general and form the basis for the development of an Municipal Equality Council. Once established the council will meet on a regular basis to examine proposals, bring them to the attention of the council and other bodies and pursue relevant actions. The day begins at

10am with events scheduled until 1.30pm. Journalist Puchi Mendez will preside over the Assembly which will hear the different proposals read and invite interventions from representatives of each of the participating groups. Following the formal proceedings there will be a Zumba masterclass with Patricia Chiquiar.

Dear Editor, I must praise the Candelaria hospital for the care they gave me. I was admitted three weeks ago, suffering from stones in my bile duct. They were removed and I was sent home after five days. I was told that if I suffered sweating, sickness or any complication, I had to come back to the hospital straight away. The next morning, I woke up sweating and went back to the hospital, where I was readmitted and spent another six days there. I was taken care of and treated with kindness and understanding throughout. I don’t speak terribly good Spanish and the staff all made it their duty to understand me. Well done, and many congratulations to all the Candelaria hospital staff. Dave Johnson

House prices creeping up THE cost of homes in Spain has seen its first quarterly increase since early 2008, according to the Public Works Ministry.

Prices rose 0.5% in Spain in the last quarter of 2014, mainly through a surge in demand for existing properties, which now represent nearly two-thirds of sales. The value of existing homes grew 0.2% from the previous quarter, while the price of new homes retreated 0.1%. The Public Works Ministry said the price decline, which began in 2008 and reached 9.8% in 2012, had “practically come to an end”. But official numbers show that homes lost 31% of their value dur-

ing the prolonged economic crisis - nearly 37% in real terms, after factoring in inflation. The General Price Index, which also includes subsidised housing, shows that seven Spanish regions ended 2014 with higher prices than in 2013. These are Cantabria (+3.6%), the Balearic Islands (+2.3%), the Canary Islands (+0.5%), Valencia (+0.5%), Madrid (+0.4%) and Andalusia (+0.1 %). Prices remained stationary in Extremal, while continuing to drop in Asturias (-5.2%), Castilla y León (-3.6%) and Castilla-La Mancha (-3.2%). Spain’s most expensive city is still the Basque coastal town of San Sebastián, with an average price of 3,117 euros a square metre.

Missing Picasso’s going back home A STOLEN Picasso painting, recovered in New York, will be returned to the French government.

The Cubist painting La Coiffeuse (The Hairdresser), was smuggled into the US from Belgium last December in a parcel masquerading as a £24 gift. It was intercepted by US customs and subsequently seized. Authorities say the 1911 painting, said to be worth at least £1.6m, disappeared from a Paris storeroom at the Pompidou Centre. It was reported missing in November 2001, when gallery officials were unable to locate it following a loan request. The New York Times reported on 17th December that a person named “Robert”, with an address in Belgium, shipped the oil-painting marked as “Happy Christmas” and labelled as “art craft/ toy”. The identity of the person to

whom it was sent has not been released. But French officials later travelled to New York and confirmed the painting’s provenance. “A lost treasure has been found,” said Loretta Lynch, US attorney for the Eastern District of New York, who filed a civil suit to return the painting to France. The New York Times was told by an agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations: “The market to sell stolen antiquities in the US is drying up.” The painting, part of the Musee National d’Art Moderne collection, was last displayed in Munich in 1998.

Adeje is forging strong tourist link with China ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and Leticia Chen, Vice-President of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade, signed an important agreement on Saturday which could lead to tourism expansion in both countries.

The ceremony took place in the Town Hall in front of Council members and the borough’s business representatives. Both parties will begin to develop partnership and action plans in the coming months. The document also recognises - as voiced by the Chinese representative - that Adeje has all the essential ingredients for Chinese holiday-makers, and she said she would help promote the borough in the Chinese market as a top-class tourist resort destination. Adeje Council also recognises its interest in having the destination viewed as a luxury tourism and investment destination within China, and will offer Leticia Chen assistance in that promotion. Mayor Rodríguez Fraga said: “We are ex-

tremely interested in opening up the market to Chinese tourism - the very many Chinese who like to travel also like to spend when they are abroad. “The challenge is now up to us. Today, we have established first contact with Leticia Chen, who is a person in authority, a person excellently placed, and with vast experience in this area “We are sure that, as a result of this agreement, we can work together to place Costa Adeje in a prominent place in the Chinese tourism market. “The initiative has been very well received by businesses, and I believe it opens up many prospects and possibilities. “We will continue to move forward in the belief that the future lies in this direction, getting to know and explore strong markets such as China.” “We know we can count upon allies such as Leticia Chen, who is very well known in this country precisely for her work in developing the links with China.” Leticia responded, saying: “I am extremely glad to receive this invitation from the Mayor. I have never been in the Canaries before, and I am surprised because the basics are excellent, although there is still much to be done. “If we want to earn

a place in the Chinese tourist market, first we have to recognise what is tourism in China. We won’t be selling sun and sand because the Chinese tourist isn’t interested in that. “The Chinese tourist wants culture, gastronomy and luxury shopping. This is what has to be on offer, or you will be losing money in the promotion. “From what I have seen so far, there is still a need for more in the complementary offer area - more 5-star hotels and luxury commercial centres. “At the moment, 10% of international tourism is Chinese, but they are visiting other places. When they come here, there is still not enough in terms of infrastructure.” Leticia urged those business representatives present to create a mutual alliance with the Council, “all working in the same direction to promote a package that is Costa Adeje for the Chinese tourist. “For that reason we are signing this accord, with the intention of establishing an action plan for the promotion of Costa Adeje as a tourist destination of excellence for the Chinese market. ” Adeje’s Mayor and other councillors hosted the Chinese Chamber of Commerce representative to a number

of key visits in Costa Adeje over the weekend, taking in some of the destination’s top infrastructures, including the Magma Arte & Congresos centre, Siam Park, the Gran Hotel Bahía del Duque and the Plaza del Duque Commercial Centre. At the same time, Leticia was given all the relevant information regarding the luxuryhotel offer, and the gastronomy of the zone, which is something of huge importance to the Chinese tourist. Leticia was also shown some of the borough’s historic sites, including Adeje town centre, the Santa Úrsula Church (which has an official tourist site of interest label), the award-winning Plaza España, the Fort and the San Francisco Convent. Leticia Chen has been based in Spain since 1987, and was named by her government in 2013 as being among the top-10 Chinese business people in the world. Among her numerous titles and job descriptions, she is President of the Association of Chinese Businesses in Spain. She is also a member of the Chinese Tourism and Lesisure Investigation Body, currently preparing a White Paper for UNESCO on Chinese Tourism Tendencies, commissioned by the international body.

Eurovision’s Punk rebels with a cause A PUNK band made up of musicians with learning disabilities will represent Finland at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

The PKN quartet, selected by Finnish viewers on Saturday, are already among the bookmakers’ favourites to win. The group, whose members have Down’s syndrome and autism, will perform Aina Mun Pitaa (I Always Have To) at the Vienna event in May. Singer Kari Aalto said: “All people with a disability ought to be braver. They should say what they want and do not

want,” he told Finnish broadcaster YLE. The group - full name Pertti Kurikan Nimipaivat (Pertti Kurikka’s Nameday) - will also become the first punk band to compete in the Eurovision. They first got together during a charity workshop and appeared in an award-winning 2012 documentary called The Punk Syndrome. The song deals with the frustration of the rules of daily life, like having to eat healthily and doing chores like cleaning and washing up. “We are rebelling against

society in different ways, but we are not political,” said bassist Sami Helle. “We are changing attitudes somewhat. A lot of people are coming to our gigs, and we have a lot of fans. “But we don’t want people voting for us to feel sorry for us. We are just normal guys with a mental handicap.” The group are rated 5-1 to win the contest, according to Betfred, making them thirdfavourites behind Italy and Estonia. Heavy-metal band Lordi gave Finland its only Eurovision win with Hard Rock Hallelujah in 2006. The UK’s Eurovision entrant will be named on Saturday.

Coldest winter for a generation

The residents have been moaning about how cold this winter has been and now they have the facts to back it up.

The Canary Islands has just ‘enjoyed’ the coldest February this millennium. According to official data from the Advance Climatological State Meteorological Agency (AEMET),

the Spanish Met Office, February was the coldest month in the Archipeligo since the same month in 1999. The average temperature in February was 13.5º Celsius which is a degree and a half below the average. And it seems that the cooler temperatures have been consistent as both the average day time and night time numbers were nearly 2 degrees lower than the norm. The airport in El Hier-

ro recorded the lowest maximum daytime temperate (16.5ºC) in February – on the 8th- since 1973. As in the January and December, February has been a dry month. The average rainfall of just 22mm, only represents 40 percent of the expected amount. This dry spell has understandably caused problems for the agricultural sector and will lead to higher domestic water prices later in the year.

Cristianos Community Church era is finished WITH the departure of Pastor Adrian McBride, along with wife Lorraine, back to Ireland, Cristianos Community Church has closed its doors.

But members wanted to ensure that the church’s legacy remained true to its ethos of Compassion, Comfort and Care, so they decided to gift what money the church had to a community project - the Comedor Social” in El Fraile. It was established and run - by two amazing ladies, Solange and Laura. Six days a week, these ladies serve hot meals to those who come, and who have simply no means to provide for themselves. As well as serving meals, they also supply essential foodstuffs and clothing. Sadly, there are many people, families and children who face real hardship, liv-

ing from one day to the next with little hope of any income and, subsequently, no means to survive. Laura and Solange run their centre on a completely voluntary basis, with the only regular income stemming from “crafts” made in the centre by the recipients of their generosity. But that merely scratches the surface of the daily financial need. While some support is being received from individuals and local organisations, there is still a financial shortfall in supplying the meals. And this predicament will only grow as the number of needy people increases. With this in mind, Cristianos Community Church decided its closing legacy would be to donate to this wonderful project. A visit was organised and, with Prakash Udhwani translating, Adrian was able to express the church’s desire to encourage Solange and Laura in their work.

He also presented them with a substantial sum of money to help feed hungry people for at least a few weeks. The church, under Adrian’s leadership, has achieved much over the last two years in helping those whose lives were faced with difficulties, both practically and emotionally. Although having a big heart for those in need, he never lost his passion for the church and its people. And many people can testify to his inspiring sermons and depth of biblical knowledge. While it is sad for them to see him leave the Island, the impact of his and the church’s compassion, comfort and care, will remain with those at the Comedor Social and many others. Pastor Adrian said: “As we ourselves close our doors, we are praying that, with the help of others still left in the community, these doors in El Fraile will remain open for as long as they are needed!”

Harrison Blade Running again HARRISON Ford, hero of the original Blade Runner film, will adopt his role as police officer Rick Deckard again in the forthcoming sequel.

The story takes place several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 film, based on Philip K Dick’s novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? And shooting should start in the summer of 2016. The cult 1982 film, directed by Ridley Scott, saw Deckard hunting down genetically-engineered, lifelike robots, known as replicants, in a futuristic Los Angeles, set in 2019. This latest instalment - reportedly

based on an idea from Scott, who will also produce the new film - has been written by Hampton Fancher, who co-wrote the original screenplay. Denis Villeneuve, who directed Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal in kidnap drama Prisoners, is in talks to direct. Producers Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson said in a joint statement: “We are honoured that Harrison is joining us on this journey. “Hamp ton and Michael, with Ridley Scott,

have crafted a uniquelypotent and faithful sequel to one of the most universally-celebrated films of all time, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with this amazing, creative team.” It marks the third time Ford has returned to an iconic role. In 2008, he returned to play Indiana Jones, nearly 20 years after the franchise ended in 1989. Later this year, the 72-year-old will revive his role of Han Solo in the latest addition to the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Last year he broke his leg on the set of the film.

A mad owl’s ‘Bored’ male nurse heady swoop murdered patients RESIDENTS in a northern Dutch town have been advised to arm themselves with umbrellas at night to counteract a mad, attackminded owl.

Dozens of Purmerend residents have had head injuries over the past three weeks at the claws of the rogue, European, eagle owl. Two runners were attacked last week, with one needing stitches for five separate head wounds, and at least 15 people have needed medical treatment after being dive-bombed by the owl, who usually feeds on small mammals and birds, One of his targets is a home for the disabled and spokeswoman Liselotte de Bruijn said residents and workers had suffered several separate attacks by the nocturnal bird. Ms de Bruijn said: “During the day there’s

no problem, but at night we now only venture outside armed with umbrellas, helmets and hats - anything to protect ourselves.” Dutch bank Rabobank has donated umbrellas to the home, and a spokesman for the company intends to send a falconer as well. The Dutch Owl Foundation says the animal’s unusual behaviour may be the result of being reared in captivity and associating humans with food; or it may simply be that the owl has heightened hormone levels as the breeding season begins. Purmerend Council has advised residents against attempting to capture the owl, saying in a statement: “These procedures can still take some time. Meanwhile, we are advising people to stay away from the owl.” The European eagle owl is one of the world’s largest species of the bird, with a wing-span of up to six feet and weighing up to half-astone.

A FORMER male nurse, who killed more than 30 patients with lethal drug overdoses, has been jailed for life by a German court. The man, identified as Niels H, was convicted of two counts of murder and attempted murder. After admitting to the court that he had acted on impulse, he apologised to the victims’ relatives. The deaths took place at the Delmenhorst clinic in Northern Germany, where he worked in intensive care between 2003 and 2005.

The 38-year-old was accused of injecting patients with a medication that should be used under strict supervision of doctors only because it can trigger fatal cardiovascular reactions. Prosecutors at the district court of Oldenburg said he had been “bored” and wanted to practise his “excellent” resuscitation skills, - as Niels H described them. If his first attempt at resuscitation was successful, they said, he would sometimes make a second attempt.

Earlier in the trial, a senior doctor described Niels H as a “passionate medic” who had made a good impression on staff at the clinic. But he added that doctors noticed he always seemed to be around when patients were being resuscitated, often assisting junior doctors with the procedure. At an initial trial in 2008, he was convicted of attempted murder and given a 7½-year sentence. But the scale of his crimes was not revealed until police

began investigating the high number of deaths that coincided with his time at the clinic. Relatives of some of the deceased are asking why it took almost a decade before an investigation was launched. While he was there, the death rate at the Delmenhorst clinic nearly doubled, and the use of heart medicine went up dramatically. Although Niels H was charged with three murders, the court found him guilty on only two counts, saying it could not be proved that he had been responsible for the third death. A psychiatric expert had earlier told the court that Niels H had admitted causing the deaths of 30 patients, while 60 others he had injected had survived. However, there are suspicions that he killed many more patients. The police investigation involves at least 200 deaths, including those at other clinics where he worked, at Oldenburg and Wilhelmshaven.

Prince William is being treated with respect on his first official visit to China.

The Duke of Cambridge arrived in Shanghai, the country’s largest city, after a morning of diplomatic duties in Beijing, the capital. It is the first visit to China by a senior British royal for three decades and represents a significant test of the Prince’s tact. The Forbidden City was the perfect photo opportunity for Palace officials, who worked for months to make this trip succeed. Among the ancient pavilions, once home to successive Chinese emperors, William admitted his Mandarin was coming along slowly. He responded to a greeting with “Ni hao”. From the Forbidden City, he moved across Tiananmen Square for the official business: a meeting with President Xi Jinping. Some say he is China’s new emperor, who has positioned himself as the most powerful Chinese leader since Chairman Mao. British Government officials will be pleased

that China granted the Prince, representing the UK Government, a meeting with President Xi - confirmed by China in the past few weeks only. Palace officials say William recognises that China is a key player on the global stage and will be for his lifetime. He also had lunch with China’s Vice-President, Li Yuanchao. Unlike British politicians, British Royals and Chinese Communists are in office for years. And the current Chinese leadership will remain until 2023. Britain’s support for Hong Kong’s quest for democracy, exiled Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama, and China’s human rights record are all issues on which the two countries disagree. But the Prince’s mission is altogether easier in Shanghai: sell-

ing “Brand Britain” to the Chinese. William has also opened The Great Festival of Creativ-

ity, a UK-inspired cultural business exchange. From high-tech to handbags, and with companies from BT to British Airways, the festival is promoting the best the country has to

offer. Business and cultural ties between the UK

and China are strong, with Britain already China’s most popular European destination for outbound investment, worth £7.7bn in 2014. And British investment in China was put more at £11bn, according to the China British Business Council. The Chinese government has predicted that its outbound investment globally will grow from £64bn in 2014 to £324bn within five years. Cultural exchanges and high-profile visits, like those of Prince William, are designed to ensure as much of that investment as possible comes to the UK.

By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct

If you’re looking to buy a property in Tenerife or any of other the Canary Islands at the moment, your timing couldn’t be better – Spain’s residential property market looks set to enjoy a good year.

Spain struggled with high unemployment, mountains of debt, and a housing market crash in the years after the financial crisis. Now things are looking up: Borrowing costs are incredibly low, encouraging inter-

The Spanish property rally – time to act? est from both domestic and foreign buyers, and experts believe that property will help lift Spain’s GDP over the next five years. A combination of a favourable exchange rate and a long-term trend of falling prices have made the pound go a lot further in Spain. The pound now goes almost 5% further in Spain, and since April 2014, Sterling’s spending power has increased by around 12%. A growing number of residential properties in Spain are being bought by foreigners, according to realtors iNVEZZ. Once you factor in the UK’s low interest rates, now

could be the time to invest if you want to get in early on a great deal. It won’t just be property prices that recover either. A comeback for Spanish property will fuel an employment boom; one KPMG study predicts that almost 10% of the Spanish workforce will be in property-related employment by 2020. Whether you’re moving to Spain or transferring money overseas, keep on top of the currency market. A good currency company will watch the rate for you and keep you informed in order to get the best rate of exchange according to your circumstances and particular requirements.

Lloyds Bank are bouncing back LLOYDS Banking Group, which has reported annual profits of £1.8bn. will resume paying dividends to shareholders for the first time since the 2008 financial crisis.

The company is now 23.9% state-owned because the UK Government raised £500m last week by selling another parcel of shares in the bank. The Government’s stake was as high as 41% in 2008, when it ploughed in £20bn to prop up the bank. Lloyds said it would pay 0.75p-per-share dividend amounting to £535m - to be split among the bank’s three million shareholders. The largest share, £130m, will go to the Government. The bank said it had also made a further £700m provision in the fourth quarter to settle cases arising from missold payment protection insurance (PPI), bringing the total set aside for the year to £2.2bn. It also made a £925m provision for other regulatory matters during the year, including £150m to cover the mis-selling of interestrate hedging products to small and mediumsized businesses. Lloyds’ profit for the year represents a big improvement on its performance in 2013, when it made £415m. The bank will also pay

out discretionary annual bonuses worth £369.5m for 2014. And Lloyds’ chief executive Antonio Horta-Osorio could face fierce criticism over his remuneration package. He is set to receive a total remuneration package of £11m, consisting of £1m basic pay, an £800,000 bonus and a three-year, long-term incentive plan pay-out, which gives him 535,083 shares. Kamal Ahmed, the BBC’s business editor, says there will be controversy over the level of Mr Horta-Osorio’s pay, particularly the share plan - agreed by the Government in 2012. He points out that because Lloyds’ share price has risen so rapidly on the back of the bank’s successful turnaround, the chief executive’s shares are much more valuable: 78p each, against 35p in 2008. It is understood that Mr Horta-Osorio will pledge not to cash in any of those shares until the Government has sold the rest of its stake “substantially”, and the taxpayer has been paid back the money used to bail out the bank. Mr Horta-Osorio said: “We went from a very, very negative position in terms of profitability to a position where we generated £7.8bn of underlying profitability, and we generated £1.8bn of pre-tax profit.”. Banking analyst Alex Potter told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Wake Up to Money that the resumption

of dividend payments indicated that Lloyds had returned to health. He added: “An awful lot of investment funds haven’t been able to buy Lloyds shares while Lloyds haven’t been paying a dividend, so just the allowance of those potential shareholders on to the share register again is going to be a pretty good thing.” Richard Hunter, head of equities at Hargreaves Lansdown stockbrokers, described the Lloyds’ results as “something of a breath of fresh air”. He described the return to a dividend payment as “a sign of confidence in future prospects”, although the new PPI provision was “somewhat disappointing”. Mr Hunter added: “Nonetheless, the bank is riding the wave of a resurgent UK economy and, along with its own measures to improve metrics across the board, the market consensus of the shares as a buy has been vindicated by these numbers.” John Cridland, Director-General of employers’ organisation CBI, said: “It is encouraging to hear some good news from the banking sector. All our major banks are on difficult turnaround journeys, and Lloyds have shown that progress is possible. “It is right in these circumstances that the hard work of staff is recognised. The CBI has been clear that rewards for failure are unacceptable, but legitimate financial rewards for success should not be vilified.”

Nelson: In His Own Words BBC2, 21:00

Drama documentary. Horatio Nelson was Britain’s greatest naval hero, famed for his dash-and-glory heroics. Less well-known, is that he was also a prolific letter writer. The insight from these letters reveals that Nelson was a much more complex man than the hero that Britain created after his death, his life shaped as much by a passionate love affair with Emma Hamilton as by his naval career. This drama documentary exposes Nelson’s skilful and manipulative use of PR to advance his career, and shows how he was careful in his praise of his rivals - in case they threatened his own prospects. RSC actor Jonathan Slinger portrays Nelson.

Top Gear BBC2, 20.00

In this week’s programme, James May is taken far outside his comfort zone as he straps into an incredibly fast, highly tuned, 600 horsepower hatchback and is thrown into the most exciting new form of motor sport around right now: World Rallycross racing. As well as trying to fend off a pack of top-flight professional drivers, James’s life is made harder by his support crew, the distinctively unsupportive Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond. Top Gear USA host Tanner Foust, an ace Rallycross driver, teams up with James to help save him from massive indignity. Jeremy is at the track in the latest Jaguar F-type R and a sensational, modernised E-type called the Eagle Low Drag GT, while Richard is in Spain to test the brand-new version of the legendary Mazda MX-5. Finally, Brit Pack acting star Nicholas Hoult tries his hand in the Reasonably Priced Car.

Athletics: European Indoor Championships Jonathan Edwards presents live final day coverage from Prague as the remaining 12 gold medals at the 33rd European Indoor Championships are won. The blue riband events, the men’s and women’s 60m, are the pick of the session. Both the men’s and women’s 1,500m and 800m finals will also be taking place, with Poland’s Adam Kszczot going for a hat-trick of European Indoor 800m titles - a feat not achieved since Ireland’s Noel Carroll in the mid-1960s. The curtain comes down on the Championships in traditional style with the 4x400m, an event that Britain’s men and women both won gold in two years ago. Paula Radcliffe, Colin Jackson and Denise Lewis provide analysis, with commentary from Steve Cram, Andrew Cotter and Steve Backley.

Match of the Day Live BBC1, 19:30 Man United v Arsenal.

Gary Lineker introduces live FA Cup quarter-final coverage as joint-record FA Cup winners Manchester United and Arsenal meet at Old Trafford. The Gunners are the current holders of the trophy, equaling United’s tally of eight, following victory over Hull last May. The two giants of English football memorably met in the 1979 final, a match known in FA Cup folklore as the five-minute final. Alan Sunderland’s 89th-minute winner famously clinched a 3-2 win for the Gunners in a frantic end to a game that saw three goals scored in the final five minutes. Arsenal also beat the Red Devils in the final a decade ago - the first to be decided on penalties. The much-anticipated draw for the semi-finals with also take place, with both matches to be played at Wembley next month.

Kids In Camps: Comic Relief BBC1, 22.45

The South Sudanese civil war has displaced over 1.5 million people. South Sudan, the youngest country in the world, is now facing a famine which, it is predicted, could result in the deaths of over 50,000 children. Narrated by David Tennant, this 1x60 documentary follows the lives of children living in temporary camps in South Sudan and refugee camps just across the border in Northern Uganda, giving a heartwrenching and personal glimpse into their lives and telling their inspiring, moving stories through their own words. Seventeen year-old Grace and her 14 yearold sister Anna live in the Mingkaman camp in Awerial, South Sudan. Grace and Anna were forced to run for their lives from their home, crossing the River Nile to safety. They witnessed people being killed all around them – either by gunfire, or drowning as the river got too deep. Both girls are now desperate to continue their education and strongly believe it is the way to make a change in the country.

MasterChef BBC1, 19:30

The cookery competition returns for its eleventh year. Out of the hundreds that auditioned, forty amateur cooks are through to battle it out over four weeks of heats. Five more contestants try to prove to judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace that they have the potential to be the 2015 MasterChef Champion. Firstly, the contestants are given just one hour and fifteen minutes to dazzle the judges when they are asked to cook their calling card, a practised dish that represents just who they are as a cook and showcases their talent. Next is a twist on the infamous invention test - the reinvention test. One more challenge stands between them and a quarter-final place. They have to cook an impressive menu that will excite not just John and Gregg but also some very special guests. Once again, some of the competition’s most inspiring winners and finalists return to judge the food of this year’s new contenders to the throne.

Major Ross is apoplectic when he hears the news about Tommy and Elizabeth. Always a pragmatist, his military experience tells him that a failure to mete out punishment will lead to social instability or worse. And in spite of himself, Major Ross is drawn to a beautiful young convict, Kitty McVitie. But there is a complication. Kitty and Private MacDonald are deeply in love and enjoy a blissful monogamous relationship. However, under the makeshift laws of the colony unmarried convict women have become the sexual chattels of the soldiers, and with women in short supply sharing female convicts is the norm. All too soon Major Ross presents the young lovers with a heart wrenching dilemma. On the beach the enigmatic convict Anne Meredith tells the vicar’s wife, Mary Johnson that she sees sadness in her and can offer solace. Genteel Mary is horrified but finds herself fascinated to know more. Can Mary’s sorrows be truly assuaged by Anne? Meanwhile a bid to save their friend James from starving, Tommy and Elizabeth have joined forces with him to tackle bully Marston, who is persisting in stealing their mate’s food. Grassing up Marston to the Governor has achieved nothing except making James a pariah amongst the entire convict community. Drastic action is required. In the dead of when night wild dingoes howl and the moon shines brightly on the ocean not everyone in the camp is asleep. In the morning Marston is gone and James is suspected of murder but there is no corpse. A waiting game begins; with no proof of wrongdoing fair-minded Governor Phillip decrees he will wait to see whether Marston has escaped or has indeed lost his life.

Scorpion Reality Bites ITV2, 22.30 The series will be hosted by Stephen Mulhern, who will be bringing his mischievously cheeky humour to proceedings. Joined by team captains Emma Willis and award-winning comedian Joel Dommett, Reality Bites will jump head first into the amazing world of reality TV. Each week our team captains are joined by a host of celebrities, TV stars and surprise guests as Stephen puts the teams through their paces – the teams will have to tackle rounds such as: The Real World, where teams watch clips from foreign reality shows and have to work out what on earth the show is all about; Where The Hell Am I?, where a member of each team is blindfolded and challenged to identify a well-known reality show and reality star by using touch alone.

ITV2, 21.00 Team Scorpion is tasked with uncovering a mole inside the CIA whose judgment is clouded by matters of the heart and is being coerced into stealing deadly chemicals. Also, in preparation for the case, Paige gives Walter a flirting lesson. Scorpion is inspired by a true story - its a high-octane drama about eccentric genius Walter O’Brien (played by Elyes Gabel) and his team of brilliant misfits who are the last line of defence against complex, hightech threats of the modern age. O’Brien’s “Scorpion” team includes Toby Curtis (played by Eddie Kaye Thomas), an expert behaviourist who can read anyone, Happy Quinn (played by Jadyn Wong), a mechanical prodigy; and Sylvestor Dodd (played by Ari Stidham), a statistics guru. Pooling their extensive knowledge to solve mind boggling dramas amazes federal agent Cabe Gallo (played by Robert Patrick), who shares a harrowing history with O’Brien.

A team led by Lenny Henry gives a full makeover to a rural health centre in Uganda. The staff say that their health centre might be the worst in Africa, and when the Comic Relief team turned up they found semiderelict buildings, with no electricity and no running water, that were infested with rats and other vermin. Many patients were simply too scared to stay the night there. Lenny brings a stellar cast - including Richard Hammond, Dermot O’Leary, John Bishop, Steve Backshall, Greg James and Doon Mackichan - to help transform Iyolwa into a fully functioning health centre serving its community. But the real heroes are locals like Francis the doctor, Dorothy the midwife and Gonza the master builder, faced with the gargantuan task of making it all ready for Red Nose Day.

Entertainment

6th March - 12th March 2015

By Jamie Droo It’s been a while since I sat at a computer screen to write. So, when I received the call from the Editor asking if I would like to get back on the keyboard I was more than happy to say yes straight away.

First of all a big hat tip to Andrew Briggs who has done a fine job on these pages over the last few months. His skillful use of words always made for an interesting read and it was always obvious he is very passionate about music and the artistes he reviewed. He will be back gracing this paper in the not too distant future, of that I am certain. Entertainment has been a part of my whole life and most of my stage experience has been forged here in Tenerife. The greatest pleasure of working here is the opportunity to work alongside so many diverse and wonderfully talented artistes who make the entertainment scene the most vibrant in all

37 CW

The White Knights a musical delight! the Canary Islands. On top of that, I now have the honour to write about these very hard working people. This will always be a privilege and never a chore. The island is stacked with talent and every night the bars and hotels present a variety of differing shows. Some are Tenerife veterans who have been treading the boards here for years and others just arriving trying to carve out their own entertainer lifestyle. What makes this circuit so different is the saturation of bars offering entertainment. Over the last few years this has evolved somewhat and afternoon shows are becoming very common in bars generally known for evening entertainment. This has also opened up opportunities for the entertainer. For instance, a guitarist who plays in a band every evening can now sidestep into the daytime scene as more and more bars catch on to the power of live music in the daytime. There are some who were first to take up these opportunities and have now established themselves. The White Knights, who

have now been around a fair few years, can be seen performing afternoon gigs all over the island. They are comprised of three immensely talented musicians, two Phils on Drums and Keyboard and Steve on the crowd pulling bright brown double bass. Great to watch and fabulous to listen to, they wow the afternoon crowds and pack out the bars they play in. All three of the

White Knights are involved in other well established acts. The two Phils also play in Crush, a popular band here in Tenerife, where Phil Francis who plays the drums in White Knights, displays his talent by taking to lead guitar, proving his skills on the Strat slung around his neck are world class. There is definitely a new element to entertainment scene emerg-

PICK OF THE WEEK This week’s recommendation is Crystal Starr. The shock in a frock is back. After a short sabbatical, Crystal will be back on stage at the Brand New Crystals Palace on the Patch. It all starts tonight with a shakedown opening with the grand opening tomorrow (Saturday). Crystal has a huge following of fans so I am certain Saturday will be a night to remember. Good luck Crystal, and all the best.

ing with the rise in popularity of daytime entertainment. Places like Kaluna Beach, with resident DJ’s offering soulful house and chill out sessions with singers, saxophonists and special celebrity guests making appearances there on a regular basis. Just last week, Dane Bowers jumped on the decks. So far I have heard Dane on Oasis FM, I caught him singing a cheeky Ed Sheeran song, Thinking Out Loud, on the Karaoke in Coco Bongos at Tramps. He performs regularly at The Legendary Magic Lounge alongside Leon Cormack on Piano. Then last week on a recent trip to The Sound of Musicals, out comes Dane at the start of the second act. Talk about getting around a bit! I’m convinced he has a clone. On Wednesday there was a jam session at Belgabar located at the bottom of The Patch opposite Burger King,

where lots of the audience were made up of entertainers and musicians who just love playing and singing. This attracts so many different types of entertainer and now the summer is almost upon us I think this sort of afternoon entertainment events will take place in more and more venues as bar owners tap in to a new way of creating income from entertainment. Andrew Briggs, who I mentioned at the top of the page, has been a pioneer of jam sessions in lots of places and now has quite a large group of followers who go to these events, made up of musicians, resident workers or tourists. Every time he organises something like this, it is a roaring success. There are so many artistes who deserve recognition for their hard graft and in the forthcoming issues of The Canarian Weekly, I will endeavour to seek out this talent and transcribe what I see and hear into words. Please send an email to jamiedrewdj@ gmail.com with details of any artiste who you would like to read about on this page. There are hundreds of different forms of entertainer here, DJ’s in the clubs and bars of Veronicas and Starco, Tribute artistes, speciality acts, comedy shows, comperes, drag acts, magicians, musicians, singers and also a few chancers. But predominantly it is only the talented that inspire me to write. It’s a pleasure to be back and I hope you enjoy reading about the Tenerife entertainment scene and its entertainers.

WELCOME to the brand-new Fashion column in the Canarian Weekly and to start a big hat’s off to Ruth Benson, who wrote a witty, weekly, irreverent fashion column, guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

As I pick up her baton for my first fashion editorial, it’s an opportunity to see what’s hot and what’s not. Also, to see what’s around the corner in the fashion stakes and a little peek into the future of what will be gracing the clothing rails in all the top stores throughout the year. But we will be discussing not only the musthaves for you and your figure type, but what’s available for you in the stores and online. That takes in everything from work-wear to casual, and from clubbing wear to weddinginvite attire. Your whole look will be attended to, from shoes to jewellery, bags to un-

Army fashion marching in!

derwear. Nothing will be left out in the goal to see you dressed to impress. As you may have seen several times this newspaper, I have been discussing your hair requirements over the last eight years, and I have made it clear that I believe hair and fashion go together in a huge way. As one evolves, so does the other - the two being the most important aspects that shape your image. And for me, you can’t have one without the other. We always say that if you have a stunning outfit and killer hair, you can’t help but turn heads because the two go hand in hand. So on with the show, and lets kick things

off with what’s coming down the runways this season. Spring has sprung, and you must have noticed that stores are brimming over with this year’s trends. Gone are the times when one style was this year’s

“look”; now we have a total mix and choice of what to wear to be bang on-trend. Many of the biggest fashion houses are showing a “military” look: formal lines and embellished details. Khaki will be seen as a major colour this spring/ s u m m e r, varying from the deepest green to more of a subtle camel tone. Abstract print in bold colours looks hot, especially here in the sun, so look for white, laid over with reds, blues and yellows - primary colours look amazing with this. I’m not a lover of any-

thing floral, but the big prints around at the moment look so classy. Try not to overdo it, though! Less is more on this one. I know we have seen over the last few years a lot of embellishments on anything, from a plain T-shirt to your favourite evening-out dress. But 2015 is “the” year for seeing bling, my favourite accessory. One encrusted piece can bring an entire item to life, albeit your shoes, bag or some detail on a simple dress. There’s never a moment not to wear some sparkle to attract the light. But the same rule applies: less is more! Don’t convert an expensive statement into something cheap-looking. If you think it looks too much, then so will others. Most of this year collections are extremely feminine. Skirt lengths

are quite pencil-shaped, and not for the bodyconscious. If you have a fuller shape, you’ll be pleased to know that mid-length and A-line have also been seen floating down the catwalks. This period, more than ever after a few years of cutting back on the number of new and exciting ideas leaving the showrooms, fashion companies seem to have caught up with what the public need: more affordable, classic pieces you can dig out of your wardrobe after more than one season. Okay, be tempted with a few one-off seasonal items. But try to have a basis to your wardrobe, which you can mix together to create your individual look. Above all, be comfortable with what you are wearing, and don’t be forced into something that’s “in” but does nothing for you.

Oscar got it so right

The magic of

Euro Disney By Vanessa Vee This week I’m looking at destinations that you can reach directly either by plane or boat from the island of Tenerife and it’s one of my favourites.

Eurodisney in Paris is a place I visited in my mid twenties, when we I was just a big kid” But now was the time to take the plunge and take my own children, along with another friend, who is still in ´big kid ´mode! In 2015 you can get direct flights from Tenerife South airport although the flight times weren´t brilliant as it meant a late arrival, but we were grateful for the fact we didn´t have to encounter a flight change. We had a transfer included too which was a bonus, so no waiting around, and the most important thing on our mind was to distract our 4 year old from the fact that we were in Eurodisney. We had decided to not to reveal we were off to see Mickey Mouse until the following morning. This was a feat in itself as we were staying in the New Yorker hotel which is actually inside the Disney campus. Prompt check in, a great room with two double beds and a cot for our one year old munchkin too. I removed all the Disney paraphernalia and put two very tired children put to bed. Breakfast awaited the next morning and the beauty of staying on campus means an early bird 8 am entry, before the park gates open at 10. This early pass is everything. It’s literally a 5 minute walk, passing Disney studios on the way. Now, my weekly article has limited space, but believe me, with how much fun we had over the three and a half days that our flights allowed us to

have time in the parks, I could fill this newspaper! Throughout the days, we planned our routes, to include visiting the Princesses, viewing the parades, watching the shows and meeting the characters for their autographs. As you would expect there are some great rides for all ages. Also the parks have an excellent queue jumping system for parents with pushchairs for the bigger rides. I simply had to wait at the exit, we could then swap over with the child minding, then we all got the opportunity to go on the big rides without having to queue double time. Our days were spent enjoying both parks while in the evenings we chilled in the hotel bar, or wandered the Disney Village buying lots of branded souvenirs. ´Purely Magical is the way to describe it and of course that joy at seeing the children’s faces gave me goosebumps. The parades, the rides, the experiences, the chance to meet the characters, made all the fear of the expense fade away. Yes, this is not a budget break, more like ´break the bank´, however we did opt for the second highest standard hotel in the campus. We did this purely for location, and we did gain an invaluable deal, w h i c h meant w e w e r e a l l half

board, therefore alleviating the need to purchase food in the park, as we were given vouchers to use in the many restaurants inside both theme parks. That was a great deal, and definitely a good move, as like all theme parks worldwide, food and drinks are of a premium price. The evening meal too was pretty good, though after four nights, I was ready for a change. The ´varied ´buffet, didn´t really vary from night to night but the standard was great. Maybe the full board option will be the way to go on our next visit, which, the way I keep reminiscing, will not be too far away. A Eurodisney mini break from Tenerife, based on two adults and two children, including flights, transfers, park entrance and accommodation starts from just 1,500 euros. There are many dates, duration, board basis and accommodation available. Contact info@tenerifesunshine. com or call 922 751 867 for more details.

The award season is drawing to a close and I couldn’t help notice one thing that I’ve been harping on about over the last few months and that’s hair colour.

On most of the catwalks and red carpets the famous and the beautiful seem to be going down the road of “keeping it simple” when it comes to their hair colour. Gone are the gaudy shades and fluorescent statement colours and in comes good old plain and simple shades. And no I’m not talking boring tired old colours but quite straightforward offerings. I’ve been saying it for ages when it comes to your colour

it should be as simple and clean looking as possible. No stripes, no colours that shout at you and definitely no “paintbox” colours! Finally everything has turned around. We are seeing pure blondes, cool browns and deepest blacks. This means it’s important to focus on the condition and shine rather than a statement colour. This all ties in with the fashion at the moment which was clearly seen on the red carpet at the Oscars. Everyone did Glamour, no one did sleazy or even sexy. Even Miss Gaga toned it all down for the night and rocked long platinum hair (even if it was a wig). Everyone looked like they had come from a movie set. I’m not saying that’s how we should all look but this is where hair fashion and clothes fashion start. It all ends up watered down and hey presto six months

later we are all wearing a version of that hair or that outfit. So what can you do if you want to follow in their footsteps? Well take a look at your colour and see if it’s a “clean” looking shade. Ask yourself does it look healthy and radiate light? Do the ends of your hair look dryer than the rest? If so then your colour needs to be evened out. There is no point trying to get a full head of overly done highlights to look glossy. Maybe it’s time you toned it all down a little. Your blondes should not be brassy. They should look natural and be more on the cooler side rather than yellowy. Your browns should look totally natural as to not be too warm so instead opt for a deep chocolate or a cool ice brown as this will make your hair really shine and look so healthy. If it’s the darker colours you prefer then opt for soft black, never blue black, as very few people can get away with this shade. It’s all about keeping things basic and with no fuss. So what to do now? Take a look at your salons colour chart and discuss with your stylist what, if anything, needs to be modified with your colour. Talk over any changes that you want before you jump in and remember your stylist has years of experience in this game so you should be able to trust their opinion.

Sprucing up your bedroom By Sue McDonald A GOOD night’s sleep is essential for your sense of well-being, and this doesn’t change because you are on holiday, or are here for just a few months a year.

If you are considering revamping your bedroom area, here are a few things you should take into consideration. Mattresses are a personal choice but, in any event, choosing a good quality one is a good investment. Cheaper mattresses will tend to be hard, and sprung mattresses may, over time, become quite uncomfortable. However, there are some additional factors to take into account when buying a mattress for Tenerife. In the UK, memoryfoam mattresses are sold with the advantage of retaining body heat, which would be a distinct disadvantage in Tenerife. However, there is no dispute that some of the newer types of foam offer more comfort. And we have found that a good compromise is a sprung mattress, with a layer of memory foam. This provides a good degree of comfort, but also with support, and without excessive heat. These types of mattresses are good value, too, so it’s an excellent compromise all round.

The bedroom is one of the most personal rooms in the house, and it’s probably where your character is most reflected. If you rent your property out, you will have to take into account factors of practicality and durability, but that doesn’t mean you can´t make the room look fabulous. And with most rentals chosen on the basis of a photo on social media, your property needs to look the part. A nice throw and some toning cushions will go a long way towards making your bedroom look co-ordinated. And if you put a pop of colour in these items and tone them with a picture, your room will have that designer touch, for little investment. Suncurtains are something that have always been used here in Tenerife for obvious reasons: helping to keep rooms dark and also cool, and prevent the fading of soft furnishings. But we rarely use the silver plastic ones now as there are so many other possible variants. Sunblock now comes

in curtain material in a myriad of colours to tone with your interior design scheme. And, as they look nice, it is no longer necessary to have two sets of curtains, making them a cheaper option. They are also useful if you want to have a siesta in daylight hours, and they’re definitely a great idea if you have small children and want them to go to bed at a reasonable hour, especially on our lovely long, sunny, summer evenings. Mirrors are also an essential part of the interior decorating scheme of your bedroom, as it is the area where you get dressed and prepare yourself for the outside world. But they are also useful for making a room look bigger, and reflecting light to brighten up darker areas. Be careful not to fit a mirror opposite a door or on stairs, though, because they can be disorientating. So why not consider revamping your bedroom area. You don’t need to spend a fortune to make a big difference.

Kaci is a Little

Princess Young girls love to have long hair, but one 8 year old was brave enough to face the chop in the name of charity.

Kaci Bedson was happy to lose nearly 8 inches from her flowing locks to help raise money for the Little Princess Trust. Kaci has always had long hair but armed with a sponsorship form and a lot of determination she has been able to raise over 350 euros and that figure is still rising. Her mum Kim told us “She was very keen to do this. She hasn’t had her that short since she was about three! But she is loving the new look.” Along with the money raised Kaci will also be sending her hair to the Little Princess Trust which provides real hair wigs to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland that have lost their own hair through cancer treatment. For more information on this great charity go to www.littleprincesses. org.uk.

Accion Del Sol News Last Sunday one of our supporters along with her friends organised an afternoon tea and cake competition. A delicious array of various cakes were entered and the two judges had a very hard task to choose a winning cake as the standards were so high but Elisabeth who is a veterinary nurse at the refuge cake had the winning edge. We all then proceeded to enjoy the many cakes, a fun afternoon was had by all and a grand sum of 316e was given to Accion Del Sol towards the running and care of the many dogs that reside there. Many thanks to all that supported the event. Please call 922778630 for more information or if you would like to help out in any way or maybe you have some spare time and would like to walk some of the many dogs at the refuge. That would be very much appreciated by our four legged friends. The refuge is situated at Poligono De Industrial Estate, Granadilla, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to ITER the Parque Eolica where the windmills are and it is open to the public Monday, Tuesday ,Thursday , Friday 14.00-17.00pm and Saturdays 13.00-16.00 . Riddles:

Stacking Coins: The maximal distance between the center of the topmost coin and the center of the lowermost coin is infinite! To be precise, for N+1 coins the distance is d/2×(1+1/2+1/3+...+1/N). This sum approaches infinity when N approaches infinity. The idea is that you build up the stack from top to bottom, and places the edge of each next coin below the center of gravity of the coins above. In practice, one should take this infinity with a pinch of salt... Let us take for example the euro, with a diameter of 2.325 cm and a thickness of 2.125 mm. When you start stacking on your desk, then at the ceiling you have a distance of approximately 1 decimeter, at airplane height approximately 2 decimeters and at the moon approximately 3 decimeters! There is a scientific publication about this problem: “Leaning Tower of Lire”, P.R. Johnson, American Journal of Physics 23, 240 (1955). 3 Heads & 5 Hats: The answer: man A is wearing a white hat. From the fact that neither B nor C gives an answer, we conclude that both these men have insufficient information to determine the color of their hats. Let us start with man C. He must be seeing at least one white hat on the heads of A and B (if he would see two black hats, he would know that he is wearing a white hat). Man B therefore knows that he and/ or A is wearing a white hat. Since he cannot give an answer, he must be seeing a white hat on A’s head (if B would see A wearing a black hat, he would know that he himself wears a white one). From the fact that neither C nor B can give an answer to the jailer’s question, A finally concludes that he is wearing a white hat! Colorful Dwarfs: The answer is: after 250 days, there are no dwarfs with red hats left at the party. It is easiest to start from the situation where there is only one dwarf with a red hat. In that case, this dwarf would arrive at the party on the first day, and notice that he does not see any red hats. Since he knows that there should be at least one dwarf with a red hat, he concludes that he must have a red hat himself. Consequently, the next day he does not show up at the party anymore. If there would be two dwarfs with red hats, they both would see one dwarf with a red hat on the first day. They know that if this dwarf does not return on the next day, he must have been the only one. If he returns, then there is no other conclusion possible than that they both must have a red hat. As a consequence, after 2 days they do not return to the party. The situation where there are 250 red hats is identical, only now it takes 250 days before all dwarfs with red hats can conclude that they must have a red hat.

THE vehicle log book information is changing, with an update to incorporate more information.

All vehicles transferred, or any duplicate documents requested from 15th January, will feature extra information in addition to that already shown. There will be a new section headed OBSERVATIONS, which will state the following: *A line where it states that the document is only valid if the car has an in-date ITV. *Date of expiry of the current ITV, or if the car is new when it is due for an ITV. *The last kilometre reading taken at the last ITV. This is to help make second-hand car sales more transparent as it allows the purchaser to

6th March - 12th March 2015

Your essential car paperwork

check that the information is correct. This is in addition to the following information already shown: *Registration Number *Date of first matriculation (if the car is imported) *Date of first matriculation in Spain *Date of issue of the documentation *Place of issue of the documentation *Current registered keeper (if this is shown with an asterisk, it means there is more than one keeper) *Make *Model *Car usage - the most common ones are hire car and private use *Vehicle Identification Number *Maximum weight permitted *Homologation number (where applicable, as

older cars will not have this information) *Engine size *Fuel type or energy source *Number of seats, including the driver’s

The registered keeper’s address is no longer shown on the car paperwork, so when a change of address takes place, the confirmation document must be kept in case you need to prove it has taken place. This is also your proof of address change if any fines, etc, arise and are sent to the wrong address. You then have

the proof to show Tráfico or Hacienda, or any other authority, such as a Court that on “x” date, you notified Tráfico of a change of address to said address. The form will have a stamp on it showing “ENTRADA”, meaning that this was the date the document was presented and changed on the Tráfico computer. On occasions, it has been known that the registration number input into the computer was transcribed, or put the wrong way round,

and your address will then be showing on the wrong car, so it is important to keep this document safe and not to throw it away. This can also cause problems with road taxes as the car could then be registered in the wrong municipality. And if the road taxes are not paid, you may be oblivious to the fact. The first you may know about it is if an embargo is put on your bank account, or when you come to sell the car and Tráfico finds the information does not tie up.

By Roscoe Over 28,000 watched the latest Canary Islands derby and whilst it might not have been the greatest it was certainly enthralling.

And some serious questions were answered. Tenerife were excellent. They can be proud of their performance as they backed up the fine win over Real Valladoild with another gutsy display against a high flying side. Young Cristo Diaz once again showed what a fine prospect he is by effortlessly filling the boots of the suspended Aitor Sanz and he was the soul of the team. Tenerife refused to be bullied and weathered the early Las Palmas storm. I’ve written before about how one dimensional Las Palmas are, and they really do have no plan B. It took Tenerife ten minutes to snuff out the fast start and once they worked out how the hosts would play, they really never looked in any trouble. Sure, Las Palmas had a couple of good free kicks, but so does every side. Tenerife boss Raul Agne caused a surprise by dropping top scorer Diego Ifran with Gran Canarian born lump Aridane taking his place. The idea worked a treat as Aridane was used to hold up the ball and for once he ruffled a few defenders feathers. This enabled the improving Maxi Lopez to nip down the channels. And it was one such run that gave Tenerife the lead four minutes into the second half. And it all started in the Tenerife box. Jonathan Viera has had a nightmare return to the club and he pulled up short chasing a ball into the Tenerife box. He crumbled into a heap and started crying like a baby as he held his torn hamstring. It took a full two min-

utes for him to be substituted and when Momo finally came on Las Palmas were still reorganising themselves. Tenerife took advantage and a static Las Palmas defence was caught with a through ball. Maxi was on to it in a flash, taking the ball away from the defender, and then poking it past the onrushing Casto in goal. With previously unseen composure he finished the job off to send the 1,000 Tenerife fans into delirium. It was a smart finish from a player who seems to have found a bit of confidence at last. Alas the lead lasted only four minutes. From Las Palmas only corner of the afternoon Hernan leapt like the proverbial salmon to glance the ball past Dani and into the roof of the net. It was a fine response from the league leaders and should have signalled an onslaught. But it never came. Carlos Ruiz and Albizua

were rock sold at the back while our own pitbull Raul Camara was snarling away at every attacker. The spirit in the left back is admiral. And then there is Dani Hernandez. He has been a revelation in goal since joining in the transfer window. He is what we have been missing since Sergio Aragoneses’ fall out with the board in October 2013. While young Carlos Abad is still getting over a knee problem, Dani has come in and become a rock. His form has caught the eye of Venezuela manager Noel Sanvicente and he has been called up for the matches with Peru and Jamaica at the end of the month. This means he will miss the trip to Barcelona B. The point keeps Tenerife out of the drop zone and gives them all the confidence in the world against some very beatable teams. This weekend Leganes

are in Santa Cruz and they have had a stellar season. They had won the four matches before bumping into proPosition

motion chasing Girona last week. But all those wins were against sides in the bottom half of the table. Points PLD Won

Their winning streak coincided with the loan signing of Chuli in the transfer window. That’s the same Chuli who Tenerife tried so hard to capture in January! Tenerife welcome back Aitor Sanz after his suspension and he is chomping at the bit “I’m raring to go” he said. “It was hard watching the Derby match as everyone wanted to play. But we got the job done. Cristo Diaz is a very good player. He listens and he does things correctly. That is important in a younger player. And I think you can see how much we want to do well. We will keep this going and I am confident for this weekend.” After this weekend Tenerife hit a run of matches that will define the season. Recreativo, Osasuna and Barcelona B are all struggling and if Tenerife can get a few wins there, they will be safe for another season. Draw Lost F A 10

Showdown at Showtime! What a fantastic night we had in the company of two of the best darters in the world last week. James Wade vs Simon Whitlock, part 2, came to the Showtime venue in Las Americas for the second year running and we were treated to a wonderful display as they battled it out for the EZE Group Cup. After we had been handsomely fed and watered, and enjoyed Roscoe’s interview with the lads, the four young members from the darts league who had been chosen by the committee, took it in turns to go up onto the stage to play either James or Simon. I am sure they all enjoyed the experience, and will treasure the

memory of the evening. Even though none of our darters got close to taking a leg the encouragement for them and other potential league players here in Tenerife is worth its weight in gold. So, well done to Tom (Bar 180 A) Beck

(Bar 180 B) Bryn (Target Army) and Jonnhy (Phoenix Bar), you did us proud! The reason the lads couldn’t nick a leg was down purely to Wade and Whitlock’s talent. Both men were bang in form all night.

What followed was a display of world class darts as James and Simon threw the kitchen sink at each other over a best of 17 leg contest that had the packed audience cheering to the rafters. Simon hit a stagger-

ing 10 maximums, and held a 6-4 lead, only for James to come storming back after the brief break. James was no slouch on the lipstick as he grabbed five 180s in the final 6 legs. It was an amazing display of world class darts. But Wade finished just that bit better to take the cup that Simon had won the year before. Great stuff, and a brilliant night at Showtime, which is highly recommended for anyone, not just us darts nuts! The event has certainly put the Tenerife darts scene firmly on the map and it is now an annual fixture in our calendar. So a big thank you to sponsors, EZE group and Oasis FM. Darts league teams

were allowed to postpone their matches to attend the exhibition, but there were still a few matches played, and the tables can be seen below. One significant result came in Division 2 as The Palms visited Phoenix Flights, and rather feisty match ended in a 5-3 win for The Palms, which puts them above Waterfall Warriors and into first place. Watching back the CCTV footage of this match on Saturday morning, made for some interesting viewing, I can assure you. None the less, the result gives Palms a 3 point lead, and means that the destination of the title is going right down to the last match. Game on indeed!

Abbott’s double bubble bonanza

It was a double week in the Oasis FM Fantasy Football League, with weekend and mid week matches being played. The majority of managers tend to have so called star strikers as their captains, hoping for a couple of goals and double points but over the last couple of games, they have all under performed in

terms of goals, maybe time for a change but it can be difficult spotting which striker is going to hit form next. The highest point scoring players are assembled into a Premier League team of the week and this week it is a proper mix and match. Southampton and Stoke are the leaders with two players a piece making the team and then we have seven other clubs represented, Arsenal, Spurs,

Liverpool, Man City, Man Utd, Swansea and Aston Villa. After the weekends matches Ray Malone’s, Inter Malone, were still league leaders but a fine performance from Nick Abbott’s, Boomtown Rabz, saw him regain the lead after a 72 point haul, which was 12 more than Ray could manage, this gives Nick a slender 2 point lead. The team of the week honour goes to Gordon Wilson’s, Coffee Shop Karma, for

the second time in as many weeks. All of his players contributed with points but he was grateful to his captain, David Silva and Eden Hazard for high scores, taking him to a total of 75 points. In the battle at Oasis Fm Towers, Adi Benson increased his lead over Chris Elkington to 58 points and if he continues with steady point scoring he should be crowned Oasis FM champ. Roscoe is still

licking his wounds back in third spot, a massive 158 points behind Adi, but John Zammit looks like taking the wooden

spoon, but he is only 38 points behind Roscoe and that can easily be made up with one or two good weeks.

The Bronze race heats ups With Gaffers A not in action this week, Tenerife Hammers A, the defending champions of the Direct Telecom Pool League looked to close the gap at the top and apply a little pressure.

This week’s opposition came in the form of Inn the Pink A and the visitors were looking to get back to winning ways after a loss last week. They certainly have the players to make life tough for Hammers A but on the night, it never really happened for the Pink men. They had a few chances early on and could have easily been 4 up. But the hosts dug out some early frames and then went through the gears to run out 9-3 winners. The fight for third place is well and truly on and Palms A fancy their chances of taking the bronze. They have been flying in recent weeks and they were hoping to leap frog The Phoenix when the two clashed last Tuesday. Palms were in control at 2-0 and only some smart finishing from first Steve and then Harry prevented a 4-0 lead. The Phoenix kept the ball rolling and were soon 4-2 up only for Palms to claw it level once more. Penguin got Palms nose in front after a mammoth battle with Sergio, before The Phoenix took the next two frames. Har-

ry was up last to win it for the visitors but home Captain Roscoe kept his cool and a 6 ball clearance earned Palms a deserved point. It was a gritty battle and the draw was the right result. The stalemate opened the door for Treehouse A to move up into fourth spot and all they had to do was beat Waterfall Rebels. The home team have been out of sorts recently though and it was another frustrating night for them. The visitors put last week’s home defeat at the hands of Palms A behind them and took all three points, moving them up into seventh in the table. At the bottom, the Peacocks were hoping to put distance between themselves and their relegation rivals as they travelled to Los Abrigos to take on the Phoenix Potters. The Potters though are a difficult team to beat at home and they were soon ahead. At 6-1 the game looked up, but The Peacocks showed some fight. At 6-5 they had the Old Boys sweating. However Gary showed his experience and snuck the last leg for a massive three points to leave the Peacocks gutted. Terrace Bar A have been better recently and they had a great opportunity to move two places up the league as they played fellow strugglers Exiles B. Last week they had a great win against Inn the Pink A, however

Although the Terrace boys kept fighting back, they never got level and the game was over with two frames left to play. Stash for the Exiles was in good form winning all three of his games, so you could say it was a ‘Stash & Grab’ raid! The final game of the night in Division One saw a mid table clash between Dreamers A and Palms Bar B, which was another hard, fought game for both teams. Palms B were a couple of frames up early on before the two Marks levelled the scores. In fact it would set the pattern for the night with one side winning two frames and then the other. At 6-4 down the Palms boys were eyeing victory only for the two Marks to do it again and force a draw. It was a strange contest with Gav losing all three frames for Dreamers and Graeme doing the same for Palms! In Division Two it was a great night in Valle San Lorenzo as the

league’s newest venue The Crown hosted two matches. The new boys The Crown tasted victory for only the second time as they got the points against Picasso’s A. It didn’t look good at first as they went three nil down but they then won four on the bounce to take the lead, only for Picasso’s to level again. Going into the last four frames, the home team took the first guaranteeing a draw, Steve then beat Wayne making it 6-5 and it all came down to Bill versus John, fortunately Bill held his nerve to give the home team a fine victory, it was inspired though by Allan winning all three of his games. On table two Tenerife Pool Tables took on Treehouse B. It was yet another close encounter which highlights the strength of our leagues but Fat Nick and his merry men were the better team on the night and welcomed another three points. And all the sides welcomed the now famous monster pizza! It is only a matter of time before Sporting Jester A are crowned league champions, as they recorded their 17th win of the season. How-

ever they were made to work hard for it as Next Door made life difficult for them. Darren recording a fine hat trick of games for the visitors and with the score at 5-4, the Jesters were sweating. The champions elect gritted their teeth to see the victory out. Just. Sporting Jester B did them a favour as well as they went to Los Cristianos to play second place Bluebell A. On paper it should have been a victory for the hosts but this pool league is tighter than the tables reveal. The Jester B played really well and recorded their best win of the campaign. This has opened the door to the chasing pack in the fight for promotion and with the Waterfall Jokers not in action; both Inn the Pink B and Gaffers

B took full advantage. Dreamers B were the visitors at Inn the Pink and they were quickly staring defeat in the face, despite some resilient pool they were just not good enough as their hosts despatched them with efficient pool. Gaffers B didn’t have it as easy as they played Hoppy’s bar, with the home team looking to add to their points tally. Try as they might they just couldn’t get the advantage they needed and Gaffers held their nerve for a win. With Waterfall Jokers, Inn the Pink B and Gaffers B all having games in hand over Bluebell A, it looks like they could fall at the final promotion hurdle. This Tuesday it’s the quarter finals of the Cup and Plate and there are some very juicy matches!

FA Cup Preview

Last 8 are up for the Cup By Adi Benson

The Premier League takes a break this weekend as we get to enjoy the FA Cup quarter finals. If you are a subscriber to the ‘romance of the cup’, you heart will be warmed by seeing clubs like Bradford and Reading duking it out, knowing one will get to play at Wembley in the semi finals. But when it comes down to it, the majority of people will still want to see the bigger clubs in the final, won’t they? I mean, how exciting would a Bradford vs Aston Villa final be?

Bradford City v Reading

Aston Villa v West Bromwich Albion

This season’s surprise package has surely come in the shape of League One’s Bradford City. After seeing off Premier League big boys Chelsea and Sunderland, they now take on a side they’ve not faced since 2004. Reading’s FA Cup campaign may not have hit the headlines as much as their opponents, but consistency has been the key. Three wins over Championship rivals Huddersfield, Cardiff and Derby, all away from home, will give them confidence that they can go to Valley Parade and take another victory. You have to go back to 1907 to find the last time these two faced each other in the cup; Bradford won that game 2-0. Four years later Bradford went on to win the cup, while Reading’s best run was in 1927 when they lost to Cardiff in the semi finals. The quarter final will be a special day for Bradford boss Phil Parkinson, who guided his club to Wembley in the League Cup Final two years ago, he faces Reading where he ended his playing career and is still hailed as a club legend.

This West Midlands derby is a rerun of the Premier League clash from Tuesday night, when Villa nicked the contest thanks to a 93rd minute penalty. It gave Tim Sherwood his first League win as Villa’s new boss. Recent history sees the clubs tied as West Brom, have two victories over Villa in their last eight meetings and after Tuesdays game, Villa also have two, Villa’s FA Cup pedigree is superior though. Seven-time winners Villa last welcomed the West Brom, with five Cup wins, to Villa Park for a fourth round tie in 1998, winning 4-0. Current players Scott Sinclair, on loan at Villa, and West Brom’s Craig Gardner will be keen to impress as they go up against former clubs. Tuesday aside, the Baggies are in good form and should nick it.

My Prediction: Reading

My Prediction: West Brom

Manchester United v Arsenal

Liverpool v Blackburn Rovers Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers have not met since a 3-2 win for the Reds at Ewood Park in April 2012. The scorers that day, Yakubu got both for Rovers, Maxi Rodriguez (2) and Andy Carroll – have since moved on. The game earlier that season at Anfield, was a 1-1 draw, Maxi netted for the Liverpool that day, too, they probably wish he was available for this one! It was back in the year 2000 the last time these two clubs met in the cup, the clubs do have an affinity though as they have both won League titles under Kenny Dalglish. Liverpool are smoking in the League, even if they were not particularly easy on the eye against Burnley. Blackburn are a funny team. They can throw in some shockers, but when they hit the groove they can give anyone a match as Stoke will tell you. My Prediction: Liverpool

An absolute stonker of an FA Cup tie is in prospect at Old Trafford as two of the Premier League’s biggest clubs go head to head. There’s usually not much between them when they come together, and even their FA Cup record can’t separate them. Arsenal’s win at Wembley last May took them level with United on eleven wins. They’ve played each other 14 times in The FA Cup, with the Old Trafford outfit having the slightly better record, winning seven to Arsenal’s five. Rooney was on target when the eleven-time Cup winners knocked the Gunners out of the sixth round in 2011. Arsenal were winners on penalties when they met at Millennium Stadium for The Final in 2005, but arguably the most memorable FA Cup tie between them was in 1999. Following a 0-0 semi final draw at Villa Park, the pair returned to the Midlands for the replay three days later. Again, it finished all square after 90 minutes, but there were plenty of talking points, Roy Keane had been sent off and Dennis Bergkamp had seen his potential match-winning penalty saved. Then in extra-time Ryan Giggs collected a loose Patrick Vieira pass in the middle of the park, ran half the length of the field and smashed past David Seaman to win it. And United fans must wish Giggsy could play in this match. They still look a poor team to these eyes. My Prediction: Arsenal

Aberdeen enjoy Tenerife training

Tenerife Top Training in La Caleta has once again opened it’s doors to some top level winter training. Recently Everton, Basle and Swindon have enjoyed the facilities and this week Aberdeen were put through their paces. They enjoyed some much needed warm weather after a disappointing defeat to Scottish Premier League leaders Celtic on Sunday. Aberdeen are still in second spot despite the disappointing defeat. They spent three days at the 3T complex and the players seemed to appreciate the sun on their backs. Aberdeen do not have a match this weekend, and their mood was lifted when word filtered through of Celtic’s defeat at the hands of St Johnstone! Photos: Sir Old Golfer
