That was the horrific, almost unbelievable, news to emerge yesterday (Thursday) as vital data was extracted from the black box voice-recorder.

It was retrieved from Tuesday’s wreckage of the Barcelona-Dusseldorf plane, between the towns of Barcelonnette and Digne, in which 51 Spanish people, 100 Germans and three British nationals were among those who perished in a remote area of the French Alps.

In just 48 bewildering hours, what had been viewed as another tragic, mysterious air accident which stunned the world was elevated to wholesale mass murder. It was almost too mind-boggling to contemplate.

French prosecutor Brice Robin’s hideous revelations gave further, chilling details of the final 10 minutes in the cockpit, before the plane’s plunge.

Mr Robin said the copilot, 28-year-old German Andreas Günter Lubitz, had prevented his captain from returning after the senior officer left the cockpit.

The recovered cockpit recordings indicated

that one of the seats was pushed back, and the door opened and closed.

It’s understood the captain Patrick Sonderheimer left the cockpit, presumably to visit the toilet.

Seconds later, Lubitz then used the flightmonitoring system to put the plane into a descent, which can only be done manually.

A few moments later, presumably after noticing the sharp change in altitude, Sonderheimer can be heard asking for access.

He calmly knocks and asks Lubitz to open the door, presumably because his punchedin access code doesn’t work. When there is no response, he starts banging and these noises get louder.

All the time, says the prosecutor, you can hear the co-pilot breathing calmly. Locks on cockpit doors were introduced throughout the world’s airlines in the aftermath of 9/11 to keep terrorists from taking the controls in a hijacking.

The prosecutor added: “The intention was to destroy the plane.

Death was instant. The plane hit the mountain at 700km per hour.

“I don’t think the passengers realised what was happening until the last moments because, on the record-

ing, you only hear the screams in the final seconds.”

Experienced pilots say that under normal conditions, crew have an emergency access code to enter the cockpit through the locked door. They can be stopped from using it only if whoever is inside the cockpit disables it - manually and intentionally.

Details from the first report submitted by the French to the German government revealed that at 10.31am, the 24-year-old Airbus A320 left its assigned altitude and began dropping towards the ground at a speed of 3,500ft per minute, before crashing into a ravine at 6,200ft.

The doomed plane had been in operational use at Tenerife South airport recently and was even in the Canary Islands just a few days before the crash.

Last weekend it had been flown to Gran Canaria from Dusseldorf on Saturday, before going to Barcelona for what transpired to be its final, tragic flight.

Two babies and 16 children, accompanied by two teachers from the same German school in the town of Haltern, were among the dead.

Spanish mother and her seven-month-old son, Julian, perished, along with Spanish opera star Maria Radner, her husband and their baby.

Also on the list of fatalities were Kazakhstan opera singer’ Oleg Bryjak, who had performed with Ms Radner in Barcelona on Saturday; mother and son Carol and Greig Friday, from Victoria, Australia; two Japanese citizens and one person each from the Netherlands, Turkey, and Denmark.

In the hours immediately afterwards, the French authorities swiftly ruled out terrorism, while experts said the plane’s rate of descent did not suggest it had simply fallen out of the sky.

It prompted a variety of theories, but yesterday’s stunning revelations sent shock waves around the world.

Hundreds of firefighters, mountain police, the emergency services and members of the public gathered in near-freezing conditions at dawn the following day as helicopters searched for bodies and plane debris, scattered over the four acres of inaccessible terrain.

Such was the jet’s disintegration that little appeared recognisable, apart from a section containing several windows. Parts of the

plane, none larger than a small car, could be seen on the side of the mountain.

One local spoke of hearing an explosion “like dynamite”, while another said he had seen the plane flying far too low. Sebastien Giroux said: “There was no smoke or particular sound or sign of anything wrong, but at the altitude it was flying, it was clearly not going to make it over the mountains.

“I didn’t see anything wrong with the plane, but it was too low. I didn’t see much, perhaps for two or three seconds … it seemed it was going down.”

It was the first fatal accident in the history of Germanwings, and the deadliest on the French mainland since 1974.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy visited the crash site on Wednesday and offered their condolences to families.

And so did US President Barack Obama, who said it was “particularly heartbreaking” because so many passengers were young.

Rajoy said “We will do everything within our power to provide the highest level of help and assistance to the families of the victims, and we will give them

our full support and care.”

At a press conference yesterday, Carsten Spohr, head of Lufthansa, said: “We have no indication what could have led the copilot to commit this terrible act.”

As focus shifted from the how to the why, Prosecutor Rubin hit the nail on the head when he said “People who commit suicide usually do so alone ... I don’t call it a suicide. But such an isolated act can never be completely ruled out.

The best system in the world can’t stop it.”

Former colleagues described the co-pilot as a quiet but driven professional. A recently decorated pilot. One colleague told Germany’s Rhine newspaper “He was a fitness fanatic who jogged most mornings and evenings.

He was a friendly guy, who had a great deal of respect in the town.”

Carsten Spohr said all Lufthansa pilots undergo annual medical checks, but not special psychiatric assessments beyond training.

“He passed all medical exams, all checks.

He was 100% fit to fly without any restrictions. I am not a lawyer.

I am the CEO of a big company. If one person takes 149 people with him to death, it is not suicide.”

Gotcha! Captura Killer Caught AN on-the-run convicted killer featured on last week’s Canarian Weekly front page – has been arrested in the Canary Islands by Spanish police after breaching his probation order.

Shane Walford was tracked down in Fuertaventura on Saturday, just days after his name was included in a list of Britain’s 10 most-wanted fugitives.

The 38-year-old was jailed in 2010 for the manslaughter of an offduty fireman while on leave from the Army.

Walford, a former soldier and boxer, killed father-of-two Paul Gibbons with a single punch in an unprovoked incident outside a bar in Coventry.

He had been sentenced to 4½ years, but

was recalled to prison

by West Midlands Police in 2013.

The National Crime Agency continues to ask for help from expats and holiday-makers in finding other wanted criminals - including a rapist, a suspected child-abuser and a drug-trafficker.

Hank Cole, the NCA’s head of international operations, said: “Spain is not a safe haven for British fugitives. The NCA and its partners will continue to pursue these individuals relentlessly and return them to the UK to face justice.”

As part of Operation Captura - a joint UK and Spanish campaign to arrest serious criminals in Spain - the NCA last week released the identities of 10 people believed to be on the run.

All the men are the subject of European arrest warrants. Some, like Walford, have already been convicted,

while others are wanted to face trial.

Inspector Olga Lizana, who heads up Spain’s fugitive unit, added that although the country can seem like a good place for criminals to hide, there’s no guarantee that wanted fugitives will blend in with British communities.

“We are catching more and more, so it is not a safe place for them to be,” she warned.

Many expats resent how their communities have been dubbed the “Costa del Crime” because of the problem, with broadcaster Giles Brown insisting: “We are not just a bunch of disinterested sun worshippers knocking back gin-and-tonics.”

ETA terrorist caught after a six-year hunt SABIN Mendizabal Plazaola, an ETA terrorist on the run for six years, was arrested on Monday in south-western France.

Plazaola, one of the most-wanted members of the armed Basque separatist group, was held in Saint-Palais in the foothills of the Pyrenees on an international arrest warrant. He was said to have injured a Spanish police officer who had been chasing him.

Spain’s Interior Ministry said he was “on the most-wanted list of ETA members” for, allegedly, supporting one of the group’s most active units, “commando Donosti”, which operated in the San Sebastian region. Plazaola disappeared in 2009 after a Spanish court sentenced him to prison for throwing an explosive device at the headquarters of Spain’s ruling Popular

Party in the Basque town of Ermua.

Mendizabal Plazaola was also accused of throwing Molotov cocktails at a business owned by the Popular Party mayor of Vitoria city in 2005.

ETA, or Euskadi Ta Askatasuna, which means Basque Homeland and Freedom in Basque, declared a “definitive end to armed activity” in October 2011.

But it has not formally disarmed nor disbanded, as the Spanish and French governments demand.

The separatist group is blamed for the deaths of 829 people in a four-decade campaign of shootings and bombings.

And all to create an independent Basque homeland in an area of northern Spain and southern France.

Podemos flexes political muscle as election nears THE anti-austerity Podemos party challenged the old establishment in Sunday’s Andalusia regional election, even though the Spanish Socialists held on to power.

It was an important boost for PSOE Andalusia leader Susana Diaz, but Podemos gave a hint of what could be by coming third, behind the conservative Popular Party (PP), which rules nationally.

The vote was seen as an important opinion gauge ahead of the national elections later this year.

Podemos meaning “we can” - secured 15 of the 109 seats contested,which demonstrated the power of the leftist grassroots movement.

The southern region was hit especially hard

by Spain’s property crash-and-debt crisis, and has the country’s highest unemployment rate of 34.2%. Its economy is dominated by agriculture and tourism.

The PSOE, which has governed Andalusia for more than 30 years, won 47 seats and the PP 33.

Podemos, launched in January 2014, unexpectedly won five seats in last May’s European elections.

Teresa Rodriguez, Podemos leader in Andalusia, said: “We are the protagonists of change. The political map in Andalusia and Spain has changed.”

Ciudadanos (“Citizens”), another new party challenging Spain’s decades-old pattern of two-party rivalry, finished fourth with nine seats.

It has a pro-business agenda, and is seen as a genuine threat to the PP.

PP duo facing a slush-fund trial SPAIN’S High Court says that two former treasurers of the ruling conservative People’s Party are among six people who should face trial over allegations that the party ran a slush fund.

After a lengthy probe into the slush-fund allegations, investigating magistrate Pablo Ruz said former party treasurers Luis Barcenas and Alvaro Lapuerta, together with four other suspects, should be tried for tax evasion.

Ruz also recommended that Barcenas and Lapuerta face additional charges of embezzlement.

The court issued a statement, saying: “The magistrate considers

there was evidence to prove that a set of B accounts existed at the People’s Party.”

But the PP hit back in a statement, saying: “The so-called ‘set of B accounts’, the judge attributes to the PP, have never been accounts known by this party (to exist)”.

Allegations that the PP had a slush fund, bankrolled by payments from companies, continue to embarrass the Government in a year in which Spain holds regional and general

elections.

Corruption allegations against the PP and the rival Socialists have helped spark the rise of new political parties like anti-austerity Podemos (“We Can”) and centrist Ciudadanos (“Citizens”).

Podemos won 15 seats and Ciudadanos won nine in a regional election in Andalusia on Sunday in their first appearance at this level of politics.

The case will not be scheduled for trial this year, which will spare

the PP the prospect of negative courtroom headlines disrupting its election campaigns.

The four people recommended by the magistrate for trial on tax evasion were Cristobal Paez, who worked for the PP, and three workers at a company which carried out construction work at the PP’s Madrid headquarters.

A total of 1.6m euros of undeclared financing was used for the work, concluded the magistrate.

More Titsa on the road THE Cabildo’s major investment in Tenerife’s public transport infrastructure is starting to bear fruit as the first 53 vehicles of the renewed Titsa fleet hit the streets this week.

More pensions for the old folk THOSE who draw a pension in Spain are a little better off at the moment. According to official statistics the average pension in the Canary Islands is now 1.2% larger than a year ago.

That sees a new high mark of 819.62 euros according to the National Institute of Social Security (INSS), Ministry of Employment and Social Security.

Also, the number of pensions paid in the Canaries this month amounted to 289,065, which is an increase of 2.8% over the same month last year.

Nationally, the Social Security in March paid out a record 8.1bn euros in pensions - 3% more than in the same 2014 period.

Most of it went on state pensions, which accounted for 5.7bn euros (up 7%), followed by widows’ pensions, which were up 3% to 1.48bn euros.

Permanent disability pensions were up 7% to 855.4m euros, while orphans received 124.7m euros (up 4%) and pensions for other family members totalled just over 19.8m euros (up 1%).

The average pension in Spain is very healthy -

1,015.8 euros per month, representing a 2.1% increase over March 2014.

The number of contributory pensions paid by the Social Security amounted to 9,270,398m euros in the month of March, an increase of 1.2% over the same month of 2014. More than half of those claiming did so on a regular state pension, amounting to 5,616,199 euros - a rise of 1.6% compared with March 2014, while 2,349,637m were widows’ pensions (2%), 928,125m of permanent disability (-0.2%), 337,890m orphans (7%), and 38,547m for family pensions(4%).

By region, those in the Basque Country received the highest pension (1,092.65 euros), with Madrid (1,044.71 euros) and Asturias not far behind on 1,043.36 euros.

They are followed by Navarra (1,007.349), Aragon (923.32), Cantabria (922.17), Catalonia (913.81), Ceuta (905.70), Castilla and León (864.84), La Rioja (853.26), Melilla (834,60), Canaries (819.62), Castilla-La Mancha (818.59), Valencia (813.20), Baleares (811.50) and Andalucía (797.57).

Pensioners in Murcia had a monthly pension of 777.88 euros; Galicia,744.57 euros, while Extremadura has the lowest payout of 739.97 euros a month.

A total of nearly 13 million euros has been invested in the new fleet, 19 of which are running through the Santa Cruz streets.

Bermúdez oversaw the roll-out at the Plaza de Los Alisios, by the Auditorium.

The 53 new buses handed over to the Intercity Transportation Tenerife (Titsa) will help provide a better service for public transport passengers.

This first fleet renewal in a while is part of a massive 47m-euro project over the next five years.

Once completed, there will be 191 new vehicles on the Tenerife roads.

The Cabildo put 8.5m euros into the pot, while Santa Cruz Council provided 4.3m euros for the 19 buses covering urban routes.

Carlos Alonso said: “The commitment of the Cabildo to Titsa is there for all to see. Buying new vehicles means the future of the company is set up correctly.

We are making an effort, like Mayor Bermudez, to continue investing in public transport.”

Bermudez, with the mayoral election just around the corner and a big beam on his face, said: “It is very important for Santa Cruz and its inhabitants. Days like today show what we can achieve. “This investment will allow us to have almost 20 new buses to cover services which gives us top-of-

the-range facilities.”

The planned fleet renewal at Titsa will be conducted in six batches, from this first quarter of 2015 to the last of 2019.

Volvo and Castrosua bid successfully to supply the first batch of “inter-city” vehicles, but they are not the same bus model. Some have a capacity for 52 people seated, 25 standing and one wheelchair; another type has seating for 55 people and a wheelchair.

One make has seating for 40 people - 25 standing and two wheelchairs - while the final make has a capacity for 39 people seated, 40 standing and two wheelchairs.

Jobless youth problem

THE Canary islands still has one of the highest rates of youth unemployment in Spain, and there is no sign of improvement in the foreseeable future.

According to official figures released this week, 59% of under-25s are unemployed.

The national figure isn’t quite as harsh, but

it still shows that almost half of young jobless people in that age group are also long-term unemployed.

Officially, 47.6% are in that category, meaning they have gone more than a year without a job.

This inability of the Spanish labour market to absorb young people is causing many to leave the country in search of work.

Since the third quarter of 2007, when the crisis hit home, the unemployment rate for under-25s

has tripled, rising from 17.9% to 51.8% nationally. Of the current jobless in that bracket, 59.8% are male and 40.2% female.

According to the report, young jobless people with primary education have an unemployment rate much higher than that of those with higher education (67% against 38.1%).

The report reveals that the southern regions of Spain have worse rates of youths seeking employment.

Communities with

youth unemployment rates at the highest are Castilla-La Mancha (62.3%) and Canarias and Andalucía (59% each), compared with Northern regions Navarra (39.1%), La Rioja (42.4% ) and the Basque Country (43.2%).

Large cities such as Catalonia, Madrid and Valencia offer greater job chances for young people, according to the report. Half of young people employed are working in catering, personal services and sales positions.

The Sound of Silence I’M certain all of us needed a few moments to get our head around the details of what happened to the Germanwings plane that slammed into the Alps on Tuesday morning.

I will admit I was actually open-jawed in the Oasis Fm studio as French prosecutor Brice Robin slowly and methodically revealed the facts during Thursday’s presser.

He was about ten minutes in when he said those words “deliberately closed from inside.” I don’t remember the next 20 seconds as I just said aloud “Suicide-Murder”.

I’ve had a few moments like that - in this game, it goes with job. When people go on about “the media”, they forget that we are all human.

A gruesome story or event has the same reaction to a trained eye as it does to the man on the street.

Until that unforgettable press conference, I had a pretty good idea what had not happened. As my Uncle, an ex-Met officer would love to quote, in the words of Sherlock Hol-

mes: “When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?”

And having a good friend who is a pilot helps. On Thursday morning, when the theory of there only being one pilot in the cockpit was being thrown around, he was batting away a few wild theories.

I remember one: “Why would there be only one pilot? If the pilot were locked out, all he would have to do is punch in the code.”

The reasoning was sound. The likelihood of some sort of mechanical or structural error happening, at the exact time a keypad to open the cockpit door had failed, was beyond reality.

But we had both failed to factor in what no sane person could ever believe was possible.

Only Andreas Lutz will ever know what he was thinking and why he did what he did.

And every time you step on a plane, now believe me, you will look long and hard at those with the stripes on their shoulder.

EMMASA have this week agreed a major 31m-euro project to expand and improve its Santa Cruz desalination plant.

Majority shareholder Sacyr Vallehermoso has confirmed that the company will invest 33.9m euros in the city until 2021, with 91% (31m euros) going to expanding the desalinating of the Tenerife capital.

The ultimate goal will be to raise the water supply in the city from the current 33% from the desalination plant to around 90%. And that spells good news for Tenerife as a whole.

The deal was signed off by Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and Damaso Arteaga, Public Works and Services Councillor.

Sacyr has already ploughed big money into Santa Cruz, and it is understood that Em-

masa has, over the last 10 years, invested 45m euros in improving the city’s water infrastructure.

The main new 31meuro million investment will be “implemented in three phases”, said Arteaga. “The first investment will be made in 2015-2016, amounting to 5.5m; the second, 12m, will be held for 2018-2019 and the third, also for 12m, will kick in during 2020-2021.

“The first phase will be immediate because the company already has a very advanced project for this year and next year, which will see increased capacity.”

Sacyr will submit technical papers for the project to the City Council by the end of April, and work should start before 30th June.

The scheme will improve sanitation in Igueste de San Andrés

Ring-road setback THE final phase of work on the southern section of the TF1 ring road has received a disappointing setback.

The latest section should have opened this weekend but it is understood that some cracks have appeared in the unused asphalt at the entrance to one of the mouths of the El Bicho tunnel.

This problem, which has caused a number of delays on this stretch of road, will take two weeks to solve, according to the contractor, and we can now expect a mid-April opening.

This latest glitch comes hot on the heels of a leakage, caused by poor water-piping in one of the tunnels.

Also, contractors had to reinforce the slope, replace the water-line and the fix the solid filler after cracks were found during last month’s inspection.

Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said: “It’s disappointing, but once the healthy pipeline has been fixed, the whole area can be finished.

This section between Santiago del Teide and Chío will be in service in mid-to-late April, including the two mouths of the tunnel.”

As for the unaffected area between Chios and Vera Erques, it is still set to open to traffic from Monday.

Jose Luis Delgado, Minister of Highways, said: “I believe that this part of the project should be operational by then, Right now, we are working on asphalting the last of the links, so that section is opened.

“The bad weather of last week also gave us some problems, but the important thing is that citizens can use this road, which saves about 25 minutes on the journey north.”

Arteaga said: “There will also be a channelling of sewage into the Pelican Street Southwest District, construction of a pumping station in Santa María del Mar’s Nisamar Street,

Bermudez said the signing of this agreement will not see a rise in the public’s water rates. “In fact, the bills will be frozen for two years,” he added.

Dear Editor, My wife and I were returning to our apartment in the Puerto Colon area in the early hours of 11th March after a few drinks with friends - a route we had taken regularly for six months.

We had never seen or heard of any trouble in this area, but as we passed a walkway near our apartment, a man ran out, grabbed my wife’s handbag and was gone in a matter of seconds.

It caught us totally by surprise, and we reported it to our receptionist. He phoned the police, who arrived in a few minutes. We told them what had happened, the items stolen and a brief description of the man.

We went to our room, thinking my wife’s bag was never to be seen again. However 15-20 minutes later, the police came to our room and told us they had caught a man fitting the description I gave them.

They took me to a area near Veronicas, where they had detained a man. An officer approached me, asked if this were my phone.

Thankfully, it was, and the man was taken away.

I was told my phone would be kept as evidence, and we had to go to the police station the following day to make a report, which I did.

When I’d finished the statement, I asked for my phone and the officer returned not only with my phone but my wife’s phone, her purse (still with money in) and keys in her handbag. A great result!

I have read articles in your paper saying the police don’t do enough, or show little interest in some crimes, but in our case it was the total opposite.

It was a big wake-up call for us both because it always seems to happen to someone else and not us.

Massive thanks to the police. I have written this email to show that the police do actually do their job.

I’m not one for writing letters, but I just had to say something. Please let people know they must be very careful.

Farmers Market midweek bonus ADEJE Farmers Market officials are adding a midweek opening to their regular weekends from next Wednesday (1st April), from 4pm-8pm.

During the first few Wednesdays, the coun-

cil is running a number of parallel activities to increase awareness.

Adeje Market first opened its doors to the public six years ago, opening Saturdays and Sundays between 8am1.30pm.

Esther Rivero Vargas, the Councillor with responsibility for the Market, says: “The success of this borough service

has been noted from the start. On any given weekend, we can expect up to 2,500 shoppers.

“A few months ago, we carried out a survey among shoppers and included a question regarding a possible midweek opening. The response was overwhelmingly in favour.

Anti-vandal Mayor fires swift warning

SANTA Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez last week promised a swift and stern crackdown on arson and graffiti attacks in the Tenerife capital.

And he didn’t have to wait long for his first high-profile success!

Bermudez, unveiling a special six-man hitsquad against antisocial behaviour said: “The sanctions are the toughest and highest in the country. I want to send a message to those who have been degrading our city.”

Just a few hours later, the message was understood. Local police on Monday caught “redhanded”a 26-year-old

man setting fire to two big rubbish containers.

Once the police arrested him, firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze.

Police believe he has been responsible for burning about 50 containers, costing the city of over 70,000 euros for replacements.

The unnamed man is understood to have committed arson in an area close to his girlfriend’s home, out of “anger and spite”.

A delighted Mayor said: “After research and monitoring, this operation, in which agents acted both in the afternoon and at unsocial hours in the night, apprehended a man who has since confessed to burning containers in areas of Barrio de La Salud, Calderon de la Barca Street and the

Avenida Tres de Mayo.

“It does not end here because this will not be the only detainee. We will continue to monitor and act, because

there are many more containers that have been burned and vandalised for no reason.”

Between January 2014 and this March, over

300 containers have been destroyed because of arson.

Overall vandalism, which includes graffiti, has tripled in recent years and is costing the City over 400,000 euros annually.

Bermudez recently received local government approval to increase fines by nearly treble for arson and anti-social behaviour such as grafitti.

And, as part of the new law, any person found guilty of a crime will have to pay a fine, PLUS reimburse the cost of replacing or repairing. In some cases, someone found guilty will also be jailed.

The extra day’s trading day was approved at the last Council meeting, alongside increased transparency for those wishing to sell goods at the market, registration, and authorisation.

The Council is also putting in place an improved inspection service and farm visits to authorised suppliers to the market.

Officials are also working to ensure that the transportation and sales processes are in line with borough and environmental regulations, which encourage good practice and reduce reliance upon non-renewable energy sources.

Clarkson had to go!

JEREMY Clarkson has been sacked by the BBC’s following his “unprovoked physical attack” on a Top Gear producer.

Despite his “extraordinary contribution” to the BBC, Director General Tony Hall said he had “not taken this decision lightly” and recognised it would “divide opinion”.

The show brought in some £50m annual revenue for the Beeb, and sparked a petition from more than a million Top Gear fans for a Clarkson reprieve.

But Lord Hall said he could not condone what had happened, adding: “A line has been crossed.”

Clarkson was suspended on 10th March, following a “fracas” with producer Oisin Tymon.

The row, in a Yorkshire hotel, was said to have ignited because no hot food was provided for Top Gear presenter Clarkson following a day’s filming.

Lord Hall, said: “There cannot be one rule for one and one rule for another, dictated by either rank, or public relations and commercial considerations.”

investigation began last week, led by Ken MacQuarrie, director of BBC Scotland. It found that Mr Tymon took himself to hospital after he was subject to an “unprovoked physical and verbal attack.

“During the physical attack, Oisin Tymon was struck, resulting in swelling and bleeding to his lip.”

The incident lasted lasted “around 30 seconds and was halted by the intervention of a witness”, Mr MacQuarrie said in his report.

“The verbal abuse was sustained over a longer period and contained the strongest expletives and threats to sack Mr Tymon, who believed he had lost his job”.

Mr Tymon did not file a formal complaint, and it is believed that Clarkson reported himself to BBC bosses following the incident.

After that, the BBC’s director of television, Danny Cohen, felt he had no choice but to suspend the presenter pending an investigation.

The decision caused an outpouring of support from Top Gear fans, with more than a million people signing an online petition to reinstate him.

But Lord Hall said Clarkson’s dismissal was unavoidable. “I am well aware that many will be sorry his involvement in the show should end in this way,” he said.

He added: “This decision should in no way detract f r o m t h e

extraordinary contribution Jeremy Clarkson has made to the BBC. I have always been a great fan of his work and Top Gear.”

In a statement, Mr Tymon thanked the BBC for a “thorough and swift investigation into this very regrettable incident. I’ve worked on Top Gear for almost a decade, a programme I love.

“Over that time, Jeremy and I had a positive and successful working relationship, making some landmark projects together.” He added: “He is a unique talent and I am well aware that many will be sorry his involvement in the show should end in this way.”

North Yorkshire police have asked to see the BBC’s internal report, saying it will be “assessed appropriately and action will be taken ... where necessary”.

Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond have presented Top Gear together since 2003, with Clarkson taking a slightly dull, failing car programme and turning it in to the world’s biggest factual TV show.

But Clarkson, with a number of misdemeanours behind him already, admitted he was on his final warning.

Top Gear,one of BBC Two’s most popular programmes, will continue without Clarkson, who will provoke a bidding war by other broadcasters.

But whether co-presenters co-presenters James May and Richard Hammond will remain on the show is not yet known.

All three had their contracts up for renewal this year, with Clarkson’s set to expire in a few days.

Hammond tweeted: “Gutted at such a sad end to an era.

We’re all three of us idiots in our different ways, but it’s been an incredible ride together.”

Second woman Bishop confirmed THE new Bishop of Hull, the Reverend Canon Alison White, is also the Church of England’s second woman to be appointed to that lofty position.

She follows in the footsteps of Libby Lane, consecrated as Bishop of Stockport in January, and is currently priestin-charge of Riding Mill, in the Diocese of Newcastle.

The Rev Canon White will be answerable to Dr John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, who said: “This is a joyous day. I am delighted to be welcoming Alison as the next Bishop of Hull.

“While she will be working with others across the Diocese of York, encouraging faith in urban life, she will have particular responsibilities for the vibrant city of Hull and the glorious East Riding coastline and countryside.”

Heinz-Kraft merger creates a food giant THE merger of food giant Heinz and Kraft Foods Group will create America’s thirdlargest food and beverage company.

The deal was engineered by Brazilian investment firm 3G Capital, which owns Heinz, and billionaire investor Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway.

Heinz shareholders will own 51% of the combined company, with 49% going to Kraft shareholders, whose shares leaped more than 30%.

Berkshire Hathaway and 3G bought Heinz two years ago for $23bn (£16,5bn) and took the company private in 2013.

Berkshire Hathaway chief executive Buffett, said: “I am delighted to play a part in bringing these two winning companies and their iconic brands together.

“This is my kind of

transaction, uniting two world-class organisations and delivering shareholder value. I’m excited by the opportunities for what this combined organisation will achieve.”

The combined firm, Kraft Heinz Company, expects to make £1bn cost savings per year by the end of 2017. Its brands will include Kraft, Heinz, and hotdog maker Oscar Mayer.

Alex Behring, chairman of Heinz and managing partner at 3G Capital, said: “By bringing together these two iconic companies through this transaction, we are creating a strong platform for both US and international growth.”

John Cahill, Kraft chairman and chief executive said: “We look forward to uniting with Heinz in what will be an exciting new chapter.”

Kraft shareholders will receive a special cash dividend of $16.50 (£10,5bn) per share as

part of the deal. A special dividend payment of approximately $10bn (£6,5bn) is being funded

by Berkshire Hathaway and 3G Capital.

Mr Behring will become chairman of the new company, Mr Cahill will be vice-chairman, and Bernardo Hees, chief executive of Heinz, will be appointed chief executive of the new company.

Regulators and shareholders from Kraft still need to approve the deal. But the boards of both companies have unanimously approved it and the deal is expected to be sealed later this year.

The new Kraft Heinz Company will be based in Pittsburgh and the Chicago area.

The company, which Heinz says will be the fifth-largest food and drink firm in the world, will have brands including Philadelphia, famous for soft cheese, and frozen potato-product company Ore-Ida.

HP Sauce and Lea & Perrins, which produces Worcestershire sauce, are Kraft Heinz brands familiar to the UK. In 2010, Kraft took over chocolate firm Cadbury, but spun the firm off in 2012 as part of its global snacks’ business Mondelez, which includes brands such as Oreo biscuits and Trident gum.

Neil Saunders, managing director of retail consultants Conlumino, told the BBC that the main challenges facing the new company included revitalising product lines and marketing.

He said Kraft had some products which “look like they come from the Seventies”, adding: “The packaging isn’t innovative, and the product hasn’t really moved on.”

Mr Saunders admitted that there would “ inevitably be some job losses” in office positions within finance, marketing and IT departments after the merger.

Odd way to Idling drivers An cut pollution face £20 fines DRIVERS in Westminster, who sit in a stationary car with the engine running, could be fined.

The local Council said the scheme reflected concerns from local residents and businesses about air quality.

A team of traffic marshals will patrol the borough and ask car idlers to switch off their engines. If they don’t, it will cost them £20 each. The penalties will come into force on 1st May, as a “last resort”.

But the London Taxi Drivers’ Association (LTDA) does not believe the move will help ease London’s air-pollution problem.

The new policy follows Camden Council’s fines for buses which idle for too long, introduced in 2011, and Islington Council’s fines for idling vehicles, introduced last August.

Excluding the City of London, Westminster has the country’s highest proportion of deaths

attributable to air pollution, says a report by the Council.

An air-pollution monitoring station in Oxford Street, in the borough, recorded the acceptable limit set for air pollution - 200 micrograms per cubic metre - was broken 1,503 times in 2014. A comparable station in Sutton did not break the limit at all last year.

Steve McNamara, LTDA general secretary, described the fines as “absolute tosh” and said they were a public relations and moneyraising exercise by the council.

“It won’t do anything constructive to tackle the pollution crisis in London.” he said.

“When was the last time you saw someone idling in the city? It doesn’t happen.

“One of the real problems is cars stuck in traffic, and research has shown that pollution is up by 30% in areas of heavy traffic. Do some-

thing to help get the traffic moving.”

Mr McNamara added that another key factor was the number of diesel cars in the capital which emit greater levels of nitrogen oxides which can cause health problems.

He said the move was “ironic” considering Chancellor George Osborne’s incentives to diesel vehicles, which were exacerbating the problem.

Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said the “key issue” would be how the marshals enforced the fines.

“If they target private car-drivers pulling up for a moment in relatively clean, modern cars in a draconian way - while ignoring old buses, coaches, large trucks, utility company vans or taxis idling for long periods - then it will quickly be seen as yet another revenue-raising exercise,” he said.

PARIS officials are determined to combat a sharp increase in pollution affecting the city, and other large areas in the north.

The number of cars on the road in Paris on Monday were reduced by 50%, and motorists with odd-numbered plates only were allowed to drive.

Public transportation was free, as well as car-

sharing and bike-sharing programmes. Similar measures were put in place last year when pollution soared in Paris. The city saw a severe spike in smog on Wednesday last week and, briefly, had the world’s dirtiest air, according to monitoring company Plume Labs.

The Mayor’s office announced at the weekend that alternating number-plate measures would be

implemented on Monday, with exceptions for electric or hybrid vehicles, as well as emergency motors. Some 750 police officers enforced the restrictions.

Public transport was free in Paris and surrounding towns to try to entice drivers to leave their cars at home.

About 750 police officers were mobilised in the city and its suburbs to enforce the traffic restrictions, and other cities also imposed various restrictions.

Warmer Britain spells Mozzies’ fever concern DISEASES like dengue fever and West Nile virus could be carried to the UK by mosquitoes during the next few decades.

Experts writing in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal said warmer UK temperatures could make conditions favourable for the insects to breed.

But climate change is just one of many factors in the spread of diseases.

Public Health England has been monitoring places where mosquitoes like to lay eggs, such as used tyres. They develop faster at higher temperatures so they wouldn’t be killed off during a mild winter.

Scientists from the emergency response department at Public Health England, who wrote the report, said there were already 34 species of mosquito in Britain.

In some parts of Europe, mosquitoes and ticks - which carry particular diseases transmitted by biting insects - are on the rise.

Over the past decade, for example, malaria has spread to Greece, the West Nile virus to eastern Europe and a disease called chikungunya to Italy and France.

Mosquitoes and ticks are known to be highlyresponsive to changes in temperature and rainfall.

The report stressed that warmer temperatures in the UK in future could provide ideal conditions for the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), which spreads the viruses that cause dengue and chikungunya.

Using climate-change modelling, the report predicted that the seasonal activity of ticks, mosquitoes and parasites could increase if temperatures increased by more than a few degrees - particularly in southern England.

The British climate is already suitable for the

transmission of West Nile virus, which can be spread by several mosquitoes already found in the UK, but there have been no human cases so far.

Dr Jolyon Medlock, joint author of the report and head of medical entomology at Public Health England, said all invertebrates were affected by changes in temperature.

“They develop faster at higher temperatures so, during a mild winter they won’t be killed off.

But in summer they will then be more abundant, although dry summers are not good for mosquitoes.

But they can survive in garden water butts.”

He said mosquitoes often laid their eggs in places which had been flooded. Those species originating in Asia have probably been imported into the UK through the global trade in used tyres.

These tyres can often be transported large distances along motorways, moving the eggs to new habitats and environments.

Dr Medlock said that although no non-native mosquitoes had been detected in the UK so far, “a better system to monitor imported used tyres needs planning”.

He added that Public Health England had been conducting surveillance at seaports, airports and some motorway service stations.

The report underlined the fact that climate change was not the only factor influencing the increase in vector-borne diseases in the UK - just one of many.

Other factors include urbanisation, land-use change, migration and globalisation. But the authors emphasised the need to assess the risks and prepare for future outbreaks.

It’s the first in Britain to be made from plastic, and has been launched to counteract the gradual phasing out of paper notes.

The new fivers, commissioned by Clydesdale Bank, are available from its branches only, for now anyway.

The new-look note is the first fully-polymer banknote to enter circulation in Great Britain, following in the footsteps of Northern Bank of Northern Ire-

land, which issued a £5 polymer note to commemorate the year 2000.

The Bank of England is next year scheduled to begin introducing polymer £5 and £10 notes, which are designed to boost durability and combat fraud.

A polymer note is reckoned to last 2½ times longer than a traditional cotton-paper version, but it will remain vulnerable to extreme heat.

Clydesdale said its two million notes were being launched to coincide with the 125th anniversary of the opening of the Forth Bridge.

It also features a portrait of prominent Scottish engineer Sir William Arrol, whose company oversaw the construction and other famous Scottish landmarks, including the giant Titan Crane in Clydebank.

The new £5 note, smaller than existing paper notes of that denomination, has been designed by De La Rue. Clydesdale is among

three Scottish banks which have the power to introduce their own notes.

In terms of innovation, the bank said: “In a first for UK currency, the note will include a Spark Orbital security feature.

“This appears as shiny ink in the shape of Scotland over a transparent window, which changes colour as the note is moved and tilted.”

Debbie Crosbie, acting chief executive of Clydesdale, added: “Our new polymer notes are more durable and secure, which will deliver a positive impact for the public and businesses.”

Life-or-death youngster’s survival, despite Ryanair IRISH airline Ryanair has apologised for denying a flight to a 10-yearold boy in desperate need of a life-saving operation.

The youngster, called Tueya, had been on a waiting list for two years for a double liver and kidney transplant.

He needed to travel urgently to Madrid from the Canary Islands for the transplant on 7th March after his father had been told by the city’s La Paz Hospital that there were two available organs for Tueya. But they had to get there quickly.

Ryanair said it could not be held responsible if anything happened to the minor during the flight from the

Canaries. according to the father’s version of events.

The contrite airline claims that ground staff did not inform the central offices in Dublin about the extreme urgency of the situation.

“Our handling agent at the desk explained that Ryanair does not sell domestic flights at airports, only online, said a company spokesman.”

The first flight to Madrid out of the Canary Islands was operated

by Ryanair. The family showed up at the airline’s desk “65 minutes before departure,” according to the spokesman.

“They had a reservation for an Iberia flight, but they wanted to change it in order

to leave the island earlier,” said the spokesman.

Tueya’s father, however, says that ground personnel refused to allow the child on board on the grounds that there was no time to accredit his state of health. The father said Tueya did not even need a special seat.

The family eventually took an Air Europa flight, which left 90 minutes later than the Ryanair flight.

“Doctors told us we

made it with just a halfhour to spare,” said Tueya’s father, Samuel.

“If we’d had to take a later flight, we wouldn’t have made it,” The child underwent a 10-hour surgery and is now recovering from the operation.

Ryanair apologised because its ground personnel “did not deal with this family in a more urgent and understanding manner” but attributed it to its respect for operating procedures and the short deadline.

“We have spoken with them to ensure that situations like this one do not happen again,” said the spokesman.

“We have been in touch with the family to offer our sincere apologies for any inconvenience and to wish them the best in this operation.”

A PRISONER who spent 39 years in jail for a murder he did not commit, is to be compensated by about a million dollars.

Ricky Jackson, the longest-held US prisoner to be cleared of a crime, who was freed last year, said: “Wow, wow, wow, that’s fantastic, man,” he said, when told of the payment.

“I don’t even know what to say. This is going to mean so much.”

The 58-year-old was one of three men sent to death row in 1975 after being convicted of aggravated murder after the killing of a businessman outside a Cleveland corner shop.

Prosecutors at the time relied on the testimony of a 13-year-old boy to convict Mr Jackson and two brothers, Wiley Bridgeman and Ronnie Bridgeman, who were his best friends, The boy, Eddie Vernon, recanted his testimony

years later, and told authorities he had never actually witnessed the crime. There was no other evidence linking Mr Jackson to the killing.

Based on the testimony that Vernon lied in 1975, a judge dismissed the charges against the three men in November.

The Court of Claims ordered the state of Ohio to pay Mr Jackson $1,008,055 (£677,000) for the near-39 years he spent in state prison.

Wiley Bridgeman and Ronnie Bridgeman, now known as Kwame Ajamu, have yet to receive any compensation.

Singapore salutes its mighty leader SINGAPORE went into seven days of national mourning on Monday following the death of its founding father, Lee Kuan Yew.

The 91-year-old, who led Singapore’s transformation from a small port city to one of the wealthiest nations of all, was well-respected around the world, US President Barack Obama described the man who served as the city-state’s prime minister for 31 years. as a “giant of history”, whose advice had been sought by other world leaders.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said Mr Lee was a widely-respected strategist and statesman, and Russian President Vladimir Putin described him as one of the “patriarchs” of world politics.

The period of national mourning will culmi-

nate in a Sunday’s state funeral, and Mr Lee’s body will lie in state at parliament until tomorrow (Saturday). A private family wake took place on Monday and Tuesday.

News of Mr Lee’s death came in a government statement that said he had “passed away peacefully” in the early hours of Monday

at Singapore General Hospital.

He had been in hospital for several weeks with pneumonia and was on life support.

State TV broke away from its normal schedules and broadcast rolling tributes.

Singaporeans were continuing to arrive at the Istana, the compound housing the president’s official residence and the prime minister’s office, where a book of condolence is expected to be signed by thousands of devotees.

An area has also been set aside outside the hospital for flowers and other tributes, while books of condolence have also been opened at all Singapore’s overseas missions.

In an emotional televised address, Mr Lee’s son, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, paid tribute to him. “He fought for our independence, built a nation where there was none, and made us proud to be Singaporeans,” he said.

“We won’t see another man like him.”

Minister, K Shanmugam, told the BBC’s Newsday programme that Mr Lee was “George Washington and Churchill combined for Singaporeans. There is deep sense of loss, a deep sense of grief.”

Lee Kuan Yew, widely known as LKY, oversaw Singapore’s independence from Britain and separation from Malaysia and co-founded the People’s Action Party (PAP), which has governed Singapore since 1959.

Mr Lee set about creating a highly-educated workforce fluent in English, and reached out to foreign investors to turn Singapore into a manufacturing hub.

He embarked on a programme of slum clearance, industrialisation and tackling corruption.

And he was a fierce advocate of a multi-racial Singapore.

However, Mr Lee also introduced tight controls, and one of his legacies was a clampdown on the press - tight restrictions which are still in place.

Dissent - and political opponents - were ruthlessly quashed, and PAP is still firmly in control. Other measures, such as corporal punishment, a ban on chewing gum and the government’s foray into match-making for Singapore’s brightest - to create smarter babies - led to perceptions of excessive state interference.

Mr Lee criticised what he saw as the overlyliberal approach of the US and the West, saying it had “come at the expense of orderly society”.

Easter celebrations set to start in Adeje ADEJE’S renowned staging of The Passion of Our Lord annually takes place this year on Good Friday (3rd April) on the Calle Grande.

The spectacular event will be broadcast live from midday on Channel 2, TV España Canarias.

The borough’s religious Easter events begin in earnest tonight (27th March) - the Friday of Sorrows with an intensive, liturgical programme, accompanied by a series of Councilorganised. cultural events.

The various processions over the following days enable the public to appreciate the many different sacred images and statues of the borough - some of huge artistic importance.

Most of them have been carefully restored in the last 10-15 years in the Council Heritage Conservation Workshop.

Cultural Councillor Nayra Medina Bethencourt said: “Easter week in Adeje is of particular importance in the cultural calendar of the borough.

“The people of Adeje take part in many of the different acts and events, above all in the staging of The Passion.

“The town’s associations and collectives are also an integral part of many important events including the Hermanidad del Santisimo, los Porteadores de la Virgin, las Mujeres Adejeras con la Virgin, Adeje Municipal band, the

School of Music and Dance and some residents’ associations.”

The Councillor added: “Here in the Council, we believe in responding to the needs of Adeje people.

“At the same time, we understand that not everyone celebrates Holy Week and, for that reason, we will work to make sure any disruption to everyday life (street closures, etc.) is kept to a minimum.

“We will also have a special security unit,

comprising members of the Local Police and the Civil Protection Unit, during this time.”

Events start tonight (27th March) with Holy Mass in the parishes of Santa Úrsula (Adeje), La Milagrosa (TijocoLa Hoya) and Nuestra Señora del Campo (Fañabe) that evening.

Tomorrow sees the Stations of the Cross and, on Palm Sunday, processions and Mass take place throughout the borough, including a parade with palms from the Plaza Cruz del Llano, up the Calle Grande in Adeje town at 11am, followed

by Mass in the parish church.

And in Los Olivos, there will be a bless-

ing of the palms and procession at 7pm.

On Monday (30th March), the procession of Jesus Captive and Our Lady of Hope at 9pm is the main religious event of the day.

The highly-charged procession, depicting the meeting between Jesus of Nazarath and the Holy Mother, fol-

lows the next evening at 7.30pm in Adeje.

Wednesday’s highlight is the procession of Our Lord of Humility and Patience to the Los Olivos parish at 8pm, returning afterwards to the Santa Ursula Mártir church.

T h e Easter Vigil is next Saturday (4th April) in the parishes of San José in Los Olivos and Santa Ursula Mártir in Adeje town, where there will be a procession and blessing with the Sacrament.

Easter celebrations begin on Resurrection Sunday (5th April) with Holy Mass in Armeñime, Adeje town, Callao Salvaje, Fañabe, Tijoco-La Hoya and San Sebastián in La Caleta.

How the budget will affect those pension benefits

LAST week saw some additional amendments to the UK pension system, and is it important that you take them on board.

The lifetime allowance, which governs how much pension wealth can benefit from tax relief, will fall from £1.25m to £1m from next April.

Savings above this cap when pension benefits are drawn will be hit with a 55% tax charge.

For defined contribution savers, it is estimated that a £1m pension pot will buy an inflation-linked income of around £28,000 a year, compared with £35,000 with a £1.25m ceiling.

This week, the Treasury also unveiled details of consultation propos-

als, allowing up to five million pensioners a chance to sell their annuities.

This would see the creation of a second-hand market, in which holders could sell their annuity to the highest bidder, such as an insurer or pension fund.

Under the British Government’s proposals, annuity holders will need the consent of providers before they could sell their income on the secondary market.

The proposals would not see the contract unwound, but the income reassigned to the buyer, with the proceeds taken as a taxable cash sum, placed into a pension drawdown or used to buy a new

Zero rate means a lot FALLING prices of food and computer goods has helped cut the UK inflation rate from 0.3% in January to a record zero last month.

Official figures show that February’s figure is the lowest rate of Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation since estimates of the measure began in 1988.

The drop in the CPI measure was sharper than many analysts had expected - they had expected a 0.1%. rate, and it means that the cost of living is the same as it was a year earlier.

Ben Brettell, senior economist at Hargreaves Lansdown, said Britain “took another step towards deflation” in February.

He added: “It looks likely that the rate will drop below zero at some point in the coming months, and hover around zero for most of the year.”

BBC economics editor Robert Peston said: “For now, at least, the fall in the price of food, games, petrol and energy is good news for most of us - if it persists for a few months - because it increases our spending power and our pounds go further.

“In other words, we feel and are a bit richer. But if stagnation in prices were to go on for longer, if it were to turn

into fully-fledged deflation, that would be worrying.”

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), a business lobby group, said low inflation could support UK economic growth.

“We remain convinced that there is little risk of a long period of deflation,” said BCC chief economist David Kern.

“Together with higher earnings, lower inflation is boosting people’s spending power, and will contribute to economic growth in the year ahead.”

Rain Newton-Smith, director of economics at the CBI business lobby group, said: “Despite inflation dropping to zero, it is unlikely we will see falling prices for a prolonged period, particularly as the pressure from lower oil prices fades.”

But she added: “With the Monetary Policy Committee still alert to the risk of very low inflation becoming entrenched, a rise in interest rates any time soon seems off the cards.”

Bank of England chief economist Andy Haldane said last week that rates were as likely to need cutting as raising in the immediate future.

Last month, the Bank said inflation could turn negative temporarily in the spring because of falling oil prices.

And cuts in energy bills are among the fact o r s

likely to push inflation lower in March, according to economists.

But unlike in the eurozone, where prices are already showing annual falls, many economists believe UK consumer demand will remain steady in the face of falling prices, through robust employment growth and signs of a pick-up in wages.

Chancellor George Osborne told reporters that zero inflation was “good news for families”, and that voters faced a choice in the General Election on 7th May. “Frozen prices are a first for the British economy,” he said.

“This zero inflation is driven by falling petrol prices and falling food prices.”

But Labour said inflation was falling around the world “because global oil prices have plummeted, yet in Britain, wages continue to be sluggish”.

Cathy Jamieson, Labour’s Shadow Treasury Minister, said: “A few months of falling world oil prices won’t solve the deep-seated problems in our economy.”

Danny Alexander, LibDem Chief Secretary to the Treasury, said: “It’s yet another month that sees earnings pulling ahead of prices, which will be a great help to millions of families.”

Superstar Cheryl Fernandez-Versini is the latest celebrity to find herself at the mercy of Ant & Dec in a brand new instalment of the popular I’m A Celebrity…Get Out Of Me Ear! Armed with an earpiece, the chart topper was given instructions by Ant & Dec and had to repeat exactly what they said.

Filmed on location, Cheryl met with a series of estate agents who were told she was planning to sell one of her homes, but unbeknown to the punters, Ant & Dec were calling the shots...with hilarious results!

Viewers will see both Cheryl and the estate agents surprised by what’s kept in the fridge when TV’s favourite duo set about causing mischief. When she opens the fridge door Cheryl is greeted by a picture of Louis Walsh, trays of pies and a bottle of Newcastle brown ale (images if these are attached).

Presenter Clare Balding will be lending her distinctive tones throughout the show as the Star Guest Announcer.

The only series on TV that says ‘Don’t just watch the ads – win them!’ is jammed packed with jaw-dropping stunts, hilarious surprises and brand new shocks for the studio audience and viewers at home.

During the series Ashley Roberts will be back to challenge the pair to the ultimate duel in Ant V Dec, and whilst Little Ant and Dec may have already rubbed shoulders with Mayor Boris Johnson, Hollywood superstars Samual L Jackson and Scarlett Johansson and the cast of Mr Selfridge, this series will see them spring more cheeky questions on their new celebrity chums. On his death-bed he asks Ross to look after Francis (Kyle Soller) who is drinking, gaming and whoring his family’s money away.

Verity visits Nampara and despite Demelza’s worry that she is too common for Verity (Ruby Bentall), the two quickly become firm friends, and Verity teaches Demelza how to be a refined lady.

Wheal Leisure has still not hit copper and the money is running out.

Ross turns to his investors, but finds they are unwilling to throw away good money after bad. They must hit copper soon or Wheal Leisure will have to close after Christmas.

BBC1, 18.00 The grand final sees the final four travelling to Devon, where they battle it out to be crowned the winner.

In the opening task the judges are looking for the amateur artists to capture a sense of Britain’s seafaring heritage at Dartmouth Royal Naval College, while in the quick draw challenge the four artists have to capture at speed a sense of the naval platoon in motion.

In Margate, ahead of the final challenge, Una meets Amy Concannon, assistant curator at Tate Britain, to learn more about the influence of JMW Turner; while in the last How-To guide Lachlan gives tips on how to capture crowds of people in motion.

With everything resting on the final challenge, the stakes are high and excitement even higher. The finalists create one last painting, capturing the light and atmosphere of Dartmouth Harbour, and at the end of a gruelling and emotional six weeks, Daphne and Lachlan name the first ever BBC One Big Painting Challenge winner.

Caribbean With Simon Reeve BBC2, 20.00

In St Vincent Simon scales a volcano and meets farmers using the fertile volcanic soil to grow marijuana. With support from St Vincent’s Prime Minister they hope trading of the weed will soon be legalised allowing this small island nation to cash in on the ‘green gold’ growing on their hillsides.

Despite possessing some of the largest oil and gas reserves in the world Venezuela is a poor nation.

Simon looks at the mismanagement of the nation’s natural resources and explores an abandoned skyscraper, home to more than 3,000 people d i s p l a c e d through poverty.

He meets the inventive people running businesses from the ‘shanti town in the sky’ and travels with nationals crossing the border in to Colombia to illegally trade in a precious commodity.

This one-off special, written by Tony Jordan (Hustle, The Nativity), is the retelling of the biblical story of Noah and The Ark. Noah, a farmer and family man, is instructed by an angel to build an ark in the middle of a desert in order to save both his family and the faithful from a devastating flood. A seemingly impossible task, especially when his sons refuse to believe him and help. Noah risks ridicule and humiliation from the townsfolk, as well as from his exasperated family in his quest to carry out his mission. Can he find the courage to fulfil his God-given task?

Kew On A Plate - Autumn BBC2, 21:00 It is autumn at Kew and the vegetable garden is set to produce a bumper harvest. Raymond Blanc and Kate Humble grow some autumnal favourites and cook them up in the Kew kitchen.

Kate finds out why the tomato was once considered to be a deadly poison and how the arrival of ketchup helped convert us into a nation of tomato lovers. Over in France, she discovers that the quintessential image of a French onion seller actually has a very British history. Raymond makes the definitive tomato and onion salad.

For his delicate stir fried oyster mushroom broth, Raymond sets up a mushroom farm in Kew’s old ice house while Kate examines a particularly special specimen in fungarium at Kew. Then she’s off in search of the only working pineapple pits in the country to find out how this tropical fruit was grown in Georgian Britain.

Back in the garden, Raymond enlists the help of some local children to harvest some Halloween pumpkins. It’s also time for the beetroot to be lifted and Raymond transforms this earthy vegetable into a delicious autumn tart whilst Kate investigates how the humble beet transformed the sugar industry.

And with winter on the horizon, it’s time for the last crop of the season – the apple. Kate tries her hand at traditional cider making and finds out why apples were once used as a means of payment. Raymond rounds off the season with a glorious apple charlotte.

Council housing provision is shrinking and more people on benefits are renting privately.

While landlords look for new ways to make housing benefit pay, the pressure is on for tenants.

Chris, Caroline and Neil can only afford to rent a room in houses of multiple occupancy.

Letting agents Aki and Arsh Ellahi in Wolverhampton and Sharon Yardley in Leeds specialise in developing property for people like them. Sharon’s tenant Neil has been robbed at knifepoint on his doorstep and wants to relocate, but after a break-in Sharon discovers he’s been hoarding bikes and wonders whether she can trust him. Arsh keeps a tight leash on the 23 tenants living cheek by jowl in his HMO. As a room comes free, two homeless people turn up desperate to move in and Arsh must choose between them.

Dara and Ed’s Great Big Adventure BBC2, 21:00

The intrepid duo continue to Guatemala and head for Lake Atitlan.

In this traditionally Mayan area, they stop to pay their respects to the chain-smoking, rum-toting Mayan deity Maximon. Back on the highway, they find themselves dodging the colourfully painted chicken buses the main form of transport used by the locals. Dara discovers how dangerous life on the highway can be - the buses are regularly held up by gangs. The intrepid duo drive on to the ancient colonial city of Antigua, now a World Heritage Site, before scaling the nearby active Pacaya Volcano. Following the trail of the three adventurers, Dara and Ed head to San Salvador in El Salvador.

Whilst stopping to pick up souvenirs in San Salvador market, they learn first-hand about the gangs that plague everyday life in El Salvador, making it one of the most violent countries in Central America.

A new series of contemporary crime drama DCI Banks returns for a six-part series starring Stephen Tompkinson, Andrea Lowe and Caroline Catz.

Stephen Tompkinson reprises his role as DCI Alan Banks with Andrea Lowe (Love Life, Monroe) playing DS Annie Cabbot and Caroline Catz (Doc Martin) as DI Helen Morton. Well renowned actors Keith Barron and Polly Hemingway also return as Banks’ parents, Arthur and Ida. With a reputation for delivering credible and emotional crime stories that are firmly rooted in the Yorkshire setting, DCI Banks has become a firm favourite with ITV viewers. This fourth series will feature powerful personal stories for the lead characters, both in their private lives and in their work environment; a deeper exploration of Banks’ relationship with his parents, further complications in Annie and Banks’ on/off romance and a personal crisis that threatens Helen’s career.

DCI Banks is produced by Radford Neville (The Game, The Borrowers, Loving Miss Hatto). Radford is also a co-executive producer alongside Left Bank Pictures Chief Executive, Andy Harries.

The series has been commissioned for ITV by Director of Drama, Steve November and Head of Drama Series, Jane Hudson.

When the body of a university undergraduate is found dumped in a ravine the investigation into his stabbing reveals he was far from being a model student. Helen’s professional relationship with Banks is threatened by a figure from her past she has struggled to forget.

The body of a university undergraduate, Josh Tate, is found dumped in a ravine, stabbed with something like a screwdriver. His flatmate, Spencer, says Josh was the quiet type - he last saw him heading off to his part time job at the uni lab. As the team piece together his movements, a picture emerges of another Josh, who was infatuated with his friend Spencer’s lap-dancer girlfriend Melanie and was manufacturing ecstasy for club owner Fallon with the help of his biochemistry tutor. Helen is unnerved by the arrival of former lover Martin Hexton, an undercover officer who claims to be working a case in Yorkshire, just as her husband Michael reveals he wants custody of their children. Evidence seems to point to Fallon as Josh’s murderer and the team head to arrest him. But breaking into his flat they find him badly beaten and it looks like Hexton might be responsible. Banks is furious with Helen for not revealing the full extent of her relationship with Hexton earlier. She tries to win back his faith by leading him to Hexton’s B and B but Hexton has disappeared. Unbeknownst to the team, he now appears to be stalking Melanie.

KFC has a global turnover of 23 billion dollars a year and a billion of that comes from the UK alone. Fast food is very big business and 85 per cent of Britain’s indulge in it at least once a month.

But the competition is fierce and in tonight’s episode, the future of the KFC UK brand is put under the microscope.

From its Headquarters in Woking, marketing expert Meghan hopes to change the public’s perception of the unhealthy fried chicken image. Launching new healthier products is a risk but one that Meghan thinks they have to take. Cameras follow the launch of a new product which Meghan hopes will be the start of a re-branding of KFC as a ‘healthy’ fast food giant. But Meghan has to get the new concept past powerful franchisees like Acky, has a portfolio of 13 stores.

When the new product finally hits the hot shelf in Glasgow, restaurant manager Mark has to push the new concept at all costs. After a lukewarm start with the hard-core Glaswegian fried chicken lovers, Mark’s team hit the streets giving out free samples and within days the new product is flying off the shelves, just in time for Meghan to arrive in Glasgow and witness the success.

In Manchester, six months after opening, a new manager is brought in to turnaround a quiet store stuck out by the M60.

Much to one employee’s disgust, the team has to try out a marketing push, handing out flyers and dressing as Peppa Pig to promote a family fun day. Though to everyone’s surprise, the strategy seems to work.

Thunderbirds super-fan Reggie Yates is given exclusive, behind-thescenes access in this one-off documentary special, as one of the mostloved TV series of all time is sensationally re-launched.

Thunderbirds Are Go hits our screens this year, fifty years after the original series first played on ITV – and now Reggie is going to get a sneak preview behind the scenes of this brand new production.

In New Zealand, Reggie gets an exclusive tour of the world famous Weta Workshop (Avatar, King Kong and The Hobbit) by Oscar winning founder Sir Richard Taylor. Then he’s allowed access to the studios where the Weta team have secretly been recreating and reimagining Gerry Anderson’s TV classic – including the world famous Tracy Island.

By Jamie Droo TENERIFE is such a hard circuit to crack, especially if the entertainer is not fully experienced in showbiz.

Many have begun their entertainment career here. Some careers have been born via their participation in karaoke bars, and have decided to make the jump to paid work within the industry.

However, in the grand scale of things, learning 15 songs by a particular artiste and labelling their act a tribute does not guarantee consistent work.

In fact, the lack of experience can be more detrimental to them in the long run. If anybody were to hire a carpenter who had advertised well but then turned up with half a tool box and little understanding of the tools

It is imperative that a worker in any field has a full understanding of the tools he uses. There are so many dynamics to an entertainer’s tool box. First and foremost must be talent, and the way an individual displays this is all-important to how he or she is received by the audience.

Too much selfindulgence is a sin on any stage and can easily turn an audience off. The equipment used in all venues here is standard, and anyone operating the PA system should have at least some knowledge of how it all works.

Billy, who has been on the decks since he was in school uniform, finished his education here

after his parents got out of the pub game in London and re-located to Tenerife.

His experience and popularity just grew and grew, and he has a vast knowledge of music. The technical ability he holds is second-to-none, and the Kaluna Beach job is providing him with the happiest times of his career.

This week’s Pick of the Week is for Billy Blanco’s Reef ‘n’ Beach Party at Kaluna on Friday afternoons from 2pm.

You will hear cool, summer, R ‘n’ B classics while overlooking the infinity pool and the beautiful surroundings.

It’s a great afternoon, proving extremely popular with residents and holiday-makers alike.

A genuine social occasion occurs here on Friday afternoons with Billy Blanco - easily one of the most popular DJs here in the South - on the decks.

There are so many aspects to what makes a well-rounded, fully-experienced entertainer.

This week, I am reviewing an entertainer who has worked as a compere in some amazing venues here in Tenerife. And he has gained his experience by learning from others and developing his skills as a host.

Andy P has been on the Island for many years and has always been resident in a top show-bar.

The first time I saw Andy on stage was at Murphy’s Law Bar, situated in Club La Costa’s Paradise Park, where he had a full bar and terrace every night and presented some of Tenerife’s finest acts.

His other venues include the legendary Full Monty on The Patch in Las Americas, where Andy really made his mark, and The First & Last in Fanabe.

He developed a style in the Monty that included regular comedy characters, with a tongue-incheek look at the streetsellers around the South of Tenerife.

This proved highly entertaining and sometimes pushed the boundaries a little. But Andy could get away with it without causing offence. He has a cheeky-chappy approach to his work and, although slapstick humour is not to everyone’s taste, Andy backs it up with his singing.

As a compere, there is not as much pressure on you as there would be on the top-of-thebill singer. With this in mind, Andy would take on any song fired at him from the audience.

And even if it meant making a mistake, he’d

turn it around instantly and make it part of the entertainment, which is why people warm to his humble stage attitude.

Audiences seem to click with him immediately. Some entertainers are like Marmite: you either love ‘em or you don’t. Andy is like Rice Crispies because everyone loves his snap, crackle and pop!

His voice lends itself well to the likes of Buble, Robbie, Murs and Mars, but he is equally comfortable performing Elvis and even Shirley Bassey.

This fearless approach to songs has provided him with an arsenal of tunes at his disposal and a method in delivery.

As a compere, Andy tells me he doesn’t write his material. He just prefers it to happen on stage. “I remember the good bits that happen and use them again,” he said. “And the things that don’t work, I either tweak till they do or bin ‘em completely.”

He is a master of the ad lib on stage with his quick wit and is rarely caught out by would-be hecklers. To command a stage and an audience is an art, and one he has mastered well.

Any venue should be happy to have him as resident compere because he is right up there with the most experienced comperes on the Island.

Over the years, he has built up a good following, and some even book into a hotel near the particular venue where he is appearing.

I would say at least 70% of Andy’s audience are returns … and the other 30% will be back next time.

In addition to the articles of Statutes of Community (community rules) the Horizontal

Division Law states in article 7 what the duties of the neighbours are, among them: “Owners of individual properties may modify the architectural elements, installations or services of their unit, giving proper notice to the community representative provided such work not alter the safety of the building, its overall structure, its

external appearance or condition, or prejudice the rights of another unit owner. Unit owners shall not make any alteration in the rest of the building. If unit owners notice the need for urgent repairs, they have to report the administrator without any delay.”

The Law is clear in this respect: every owner can modify his own

We’ve all been in a Yellow Submarine

By Vanessa Vee I RECALL when the Yellow Submarine was first discussed, and that we were getting one here in Tenerife, just like the one in Lanzarote.

And in 2007, our Island welcomed its own Submarine Safari. It was extremely exciting, as only one of five commercial submarines in the world. And let’s be honest, how often is it in our lifetimes that we will ever get a chance to experience this? Unless, of course we decide to join the Royal Navy!

Well at my age, this is highly unlikely to happen, but now my eldest has seen pictures of the submarine on the coaches as we drive around town, I have been nagged constantly by her to give it a go.

Last Sunday was the perfect opportunity because, although we had quite a few exciting ideas for ourselves and some friends, through bad weather, it was proving too much of a risk to plan in advance.

As our friends were visiting from the UK, it was important we opted for an activity that couldn’t be duplicated back home. I even put a request out on social media for ideas.

Anyway, on Sunday morning, we finally made our decision, and Submarine Safari San Miguel was the choice.

We made our own way there, though generally there is a transfer coach for tourists, and once at the San Miguel

Marina, no messing around, we were guided on-board.

A handy hint from me, ladies: wear trousers rather than a skirt, and if you must wear a skirt, make it a long one, because the descent into the vessel is via a virtually-upright ladder.

That is also a reason why this is not ideal for people with mobility issues.

We were seated, facing the portholes, one between two people, and in front of us, monitors showing exactly how many metres we were beneath sea level, and also the duration of the dive.

Once we were all comfortable and had watched the safety brief, it was time to depart.

Obviously, because of the portholes, but more importantly, the steady speed of the submarine, this ensured we had perfect vision - highly important for an excursion of this type.

Once we navigated out of the marina, we then submerged lower, and this is when the schools of fish surrounded us. It seems that, over time, all the underwater life in this area is now quite used to the submarine’s frequent visits, and therefore there is no fear.

Or maybe it could be the presence of a diver, who floats around and feeds them all.

However it is done, it is a complete joy, and the visitors of all ages, especially the children, were astounded. But but not half as much as when the diver swam past with a giant stingray!

Seriously, this stingray was at least 5ft long in

length, and to see this was an amazing experience - one that really has to be seen to be believed.

As well as rays, we saw a couple of barracudas, plus many other breeds of fish, including the glow-in-the-dark ones!

We also viewed a shipwreck.

Granted it’s not quite The Titanic, but it’s most definitely wrecked! Not to mention the, well, I think they are called seaworms. Whatever they are, I don’t like them.

In fact, I am petrified of being in the sea. You would probably be able to coax me into a “try” dive, but you would never get me in the sea on a dive That’s because I always think Jaws is going to come and get me! Seriously, I am a big sissy. I even used to get nightmares over King Kong! So to see the underwater world, the Submarine Safari is my ideal option, and with the dive lasting 50 minutes, the duration is just right, especially for the youngsters.

And the final touch is a singalong to The Beatles’ infamous song.

After disembarkation, the excited children were presented with a certificate, as were the adults, and also a souvenir photograph.

All in all, a very pleasant afternoon out, and something I recommend should be experienced by everyone at least once.

to try, check out your stylists and ask for their opinion. They will need to check out a few things first, like your profile, neck-line and, most important of all, your forehead.

All these factors come in to play when going for the crop, and you can enhance this look by being a full-on blonde, a sultry brown, or opting for more of a copper shade.

It’s whatever suits your skin tone, and make sure the colour brings out the style but doesn’t compete with it.

Above all, think long and hard about going ahead with this look as it can take years to grow out.

That is, if you ever get bored with the attention you will get with your Sexy Crop!

Flowers in your hair

By Monica Dyson I LOVE Spring. It means that Summer is well and truly on its way.

Once the shops have stopped playing Slade’s Merry Christmas Everyone in just about every shop we go into, I start to get excited!

During the Sixties, Summer seemed to be epitomised by the music we heard. Take 1967!

Where were you? Probably not dancing around with flowers in your hair, or even dancing around your handbag at the Locarno!

You were more likely to have been hanging out Terry towelling nappies in the garden of your first home after you got married. But you remember the music, don’t you?

It always seems to me that more people missed the Sixties than actually took part in what seems to have been one of the most important decades in our lifetime.

Recently-deceased comedian Robin Williams famously said that if you did remem-

ber the Sixties, then you most probably were not there!

And you were probably totally unaware of the Summer of Love, which was taking place during the summer of 1967 in the Haight Ashbury district of San Francisco, where as many as 100,000 people, mostly young, converged there initiating a major political and cultural shift.

Like its sister enclave of Greenwich Village, the city became a melting pot of politics, music, drugs and creativity.

The hippy movement was alive and well.

And it became a defining Sixties’ moment when alternative lifestyles, gender equality, communal living and free love had effects which reverberated into the Seventies and beyond.

The hippies were also

called “Flower People” with many suspicious of the Government, rejecting consumerist values and generally being opposed to the Vietnam War. In Britain, the nearest we ever got to all this was in the music that seemed to epitomise a way of life in which we had no part. The biggest UK protest came the year after, in 1968, against the Vietnam War and outside the American Embassy.

John Phillips, of the Mamas and Papas, wrote San Francisco (Be sure to wear flowers in your hair), which was released

by Scott McKenzie and helped to publicise the Monterey Pop Festival in June 1967.

Keeping the hippy dream alive, and popularising the flower children of San Francisco, it was a big hit in the UK, where the nearest anyone got to any pop festivals at that time were events at the Round House in Camden Town and the International Love In at Alexandra Palace in July 1967, where Procol Harum performed A Whiter Shade of Pale, with lyrics we didn’t really understand.

The UK band Flower Pot Men released Let’s Go To San Francisco in 1967. If only, we thought!

Their name was derived from a children’s TV show called The Flower Pot Men, with the psychedelic-era puns on flower-power or pot (cannabis), which we didn’t see much of at that time, either.

Just about the biggest festival around was the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, where over 600,000

people - the biggest gathering of its kind ever in the world - listened to stars like Jimi Hendrix, The Who, The Doors, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Chicago and Tiny Tim. This yearly festival started in 1968, when it starred Jefferson Airplane, The Move and The Pretty Things, with Bob Dylan headlining in 1969. The festival took place 11 days after Woodstock where Dylan didn’t perform.

It’s a fact that we hear a piece of music and are instantly transported back in time, whether we were at a pop festival or hanging the washing

out at home. In the Sixties and Seventies, pop festivals were always held during the summer months and, usually, certain records remind us instantly of that season.

The Beach Boys’ music takes you straight to California beaches and beautiful people. We are filled with nostalgia when we hear Surfing USA, I Get Around or Good Vibrations.

The Mamas and Papas recorded lovely, dreamy hits throughout the Sixties. Dedicated To The One I Love in 1967, although recorded by the Shirelles in 1961, became a massive hit when recorded by Michelle Phillips - the first time she had been given the lead over Mama Cass.

Dream A Little Dream Of Me, which had been first recorded in 1931 by Ozzie Nelson, became one of the highest chart ratings ever when recorded by Mama Cass Elliott in 1968.

By 1970, we had certainly enjoyed all that was good about Summer music, and this was summed up perfectly by the group Mungo Jerry, whose name was inspired by the poem Mungojerrie and

Rumpelteazer from TS Elliott’s Old Possums Book of Practical Cats.

They released In the Summertime at the 1970 Hollywood Festival in Newcastle Under Lyme and, with it, stole the show from Black Sabbath, Traffic and Grateful Dead.

It shot straight to No.1 in the hit parade with lead singer and composer of the song, Ray Dorset, having to ask his boss for time off work to appear on Top of the Pops.

There is little doubt that the music of the Sixties has stood the test of time. The Beatles, since their first record, Love Me Do in 1962, have a special place in pop history.

Possibly, though, Bob Dylan with his The Times They Are Achanging in 1964, captured the spirit of social and political upheaval that characterised this decade.

And even if you spent much of it hanging nappies out on the line, things were never the same again! Come to think of it, nappies weren’t either!

Who remembers with nostalgia the nappies blowing in the wind?

Staffy’s stroke of fortune WHAT a busy week we have had at the refuge, with many a sad tale to tell, starting with a gorgeous young Staffy who was picked up on the streets.

It turned out that he had been stolen - but, more worryingly, he’d had his microchip cut out of his neck.

Luckily, he has been returned to his rightful owner and now has a new microchip. And they were so happy to be reunited.

On the other hand, sadly, a young, extremely stressed female dog was found abandoned in the industrial area of Granadilla.

She was still full of milk after giving birth to puppies very recently. The poor dog is constantly crying for her puppies, which is very sad for her, and we simply do not know what has happened to her

offspring.

A beautiful German shepherd was brought into the refuge with a bad leg injury, he has been operated on and is on the road to recovery.

Once his three-week probation period has expired, he will be looking for a loving home.

Carers’ early start Our educational programme continued last week with 50 eager-tolearn four-year-olds. We hope we are teaching them to love and care for animals as much as we do, to help improve animal welfare in Tenerife.

Rescued from life of hell NEWS of an illegal puppy farm in the north being busted came on Monday. Seprona were in attendance while Yahaira, at Adepac refuge, was contacted to co-ordinate the rescue of around 50 pedigree dogs used for breeding.

Within hours of her plea for help, the original post and photos went viral on social

media, and most rescuers on the Island were asked to help, us included.

Late Monday night, the owner agreed to hand over the dogs voluntarily, prior to a judicial hearing, so within hours a rescue took place.

At the time of writing, the dogs are in transit.

We have some coming to the South but we don’t know which yet, and we have had an amazing response to calls for foster homes.

We will update you on the situation next week, but in the meantime,

Swallows hit jackpot THE Swallows Drama Group surpassed their achievements of last year with The Boy Friend at the Sol Princesa Dacil hotel in Los Cristianos.

Their 2014 initial production of Oh, What A Lovely War was well received, and this latest show, a musical based on the Roaring Twenties, proved a knockout. The three sell-out evenings raised a superb jackpot of 3,011 euros for Tenerife Can-

cer Research, a charity closely linked to the fund-raising Swallows, who donate thousands of euros every year.

Carole Hart, who runs the Los Cristianos group with husband Mike, said: “We had three packed nights and the cast, director and background people worked so hard to put on such an entertaining performance.

“A big well done to everyone who took part and also helped on the nights - and especially to director Mike Huntington for putting it all together. It was a great achievement.”

IN the past few years, health and fitness have become the trending topics of everyday life, and the industry has literally exploded.

New gyms open on what feels like a daily basis,with all and sundry suddenly calling themselves an instructor of some sort - often after taking nothing more than a short, online course.

It’s somewhat ironic, then, to learn that the number of back injuries is greater than ever.

Ironic, but, seeing it from my point of view - as someone who has studied and worked hard to gain the knowledge necessary to carry out my chosen profession - not really that surprising.

The rise in back injuries is especially linked to three main factors: *It’s very “cool” to be in shape these days. And most people want huge results, fast. They also want these amazing results with the smallest effort possible. So they believe the hype, the self-proclaimed fitness “experts”, and they place their most valuable possession - their health - in the hands of people who, often, really don’t know what they’re doing.

They go from a sitdown job and, generally lazy lifestyle to killing themselves in cross-fit sessions, with no care, no guidance and no awareness of the importance of protecting the spine correctly. *The very technology that promises miraculous results - the futuristic, cost-as-muchas-a-new-car, terminator-looking machines

found in most gyms these days - often do more harm than good.

Why? Because most people don’t know how to use them properly. And they also grossly over-estimate their fitness levels and strength, which means they do too many repetitions, incorrectly, creating short-term pain and, worse still, long-term damage. *The hunger for fame and glory - not to mention money - in today’s sporting world has led to trainers and even athletes themselves pushing the limits far beyond what is healthy or natural to achieve super-human results.

This comes at a very hefty price.

This is why it’s vital to know who to trust when it comes to sports’ training and obtaining the results you want safely over time.

New guidance says health professionals should carefully consider whether medical intervention is in the baby’s best interest, and shouldn’t be carried out “just because the technology is there”.

And child-health doctors say that continuing treatment to keep the baby alive can sometimes cause greater suffering.

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) has just released a new framework, which advises doctors on how to care for children and babies with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions.

It says seriously-ill children should be given a greater say in whether they want to continue receiving the treatment keeping them alive.

The updated information provides three sets of circumstances to be considered for limiting or withdrawing the treatment of children and babies. This can be done when life is limited in quality or quantity.

Treatment can also be limited or with-

drawn when there is “competent refusal of treatment” - if an older child with extensive experience of illness repeatedly consents to stopping his/her medical care.

For example, a child who has undergone repeated cycles of chemotherapy or had organ transplantation, “will have more informed views about continuing treatment than an adult facing such treatment for the first time”, says the document.

But it adds that, equally, children might not have any experience in decision-making and, therefore, it might not be as appropriate for them to be involved.

The guidance, written by medics, lawyers and ethicists, was published to provide an ethical and legal framework for doctors.

Since the last version, published 10 years ago, major breakthroughs in medical science have led to better survival rates for seriously-sick babies and children.

And babies born at 22 or 23 weeks are now surviving.

But child health experts said that just because the technology is there, it does not mean it is necessarily in the best interests of a child or baby to use it if their circumstances fall under any of the categories set out.

Dr Simon Newell, a consultant neonatologist and vice-

president of the RCPCH, said the document sets out a “better and more family-friendly process”.

He added: “For some, continuing life-sustaining treatment is simply prolonging suffering in the face of the inevitable.

“In these cases, an active decision is reached among the clinicians, parents and other parties to discontinue treatment, rather than cause greater suffering for the young children by keeping them alive.”

The better informed the family or the patients themselves are, the better, he said, and more children and babies are receiving palliative care in hospices or at home rather than dying in hospital.

Dr Joe Brierley, consultant in paediatric and neonatal intensive care at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and chairman of the Ethics and Law Advisory Committee at the RCPCH, said: “This is a sensitive and challenging area of medicine.

“The guiding principle remains to act in the best interest of the child, actively involving them in the decisionmaking where possible, and, of course, considering the interests of the families and their rights.”

He added: “Decisions to limit treatments should be made by clinical teams in partnership with, and with the agreement of, the parents and child.”

IT’S that time of year when we fastforward to what us guys might be wearing as the months roll on.

Bear in mind that we live in Tenerife and that the fashion world seems to reach us quite slowly.

I aim to show you once a month what you or your man might be wearing … nothing impossible but simple ways to keep you stylish.

One of the biggest trends on the catwalks seems to be “smart safari” displayed by Dolce and Gabbana, Armani and Gucci, as well as many High-Street brands.

As with all fashion seen on the runway, it’s not to be taken literally.

You see it,

you take inspiration from one piece and then you use it. There are no “rules” for anyone’s fashion guide, so what’s the look?

Well, smart vests worn under loose, open shirts, in colours ranging from khaki to light-beige/white. Trousers should be seen as slightly cropped and short above knee length. Above all, make them a fitted classic cut and not loose or baggy.

Go for moccasin-style shoes to finish off your look, and stay away from sandals or cheap flip-flops because these will kill your appearance completely.

Mixing and matching earthy colours together will tie in your safari pieces, making them versatile from that day-at-the-beach look to a night-on-the-tiles outfit.

If you’re on a budget, this t r e n d can easily be pulled tog e t h e r w i t h

clothes bought on the high street. There is no need to spend a fortune when going for clothes that are ontrend. Splash out only on timeless classic pieces we see from year to year.

If it’s this year’s look, the chances are that you won’t be wearing it in 18 months. Guys here tend to follow on from what is seen in the UK. But it’s not so easy replicating what you want with what’s available here.

My rule is that if you see something you like, the chances are that if you wait and ponder, it will be gone by the time you get back to buy it.

Okay, don’t buy everything on impulse. Make sure you try it on and think about what else it will go with in your wardrobe.

Above all, go for what you are comfortable with and not what your friend/partner/shop assistant are trying to bully you into.

After all, you will be wearing it, so you have to feel right with your image.

So when out looking for the Safari Look, think Indiana Jones meets David Beckham - casual but tailored - and you won’t go wrong.

By Roscoe SOME awful Santa Cruz weather may have lightened the crowd, but the 7,308 souls who braved the elements were treated to another fine Tenerife display.

It’s now six matches unbeaten: three straight home wins, and the South American lads are grabbing all the headlines.

While Dani was again faultless, his firsthalf save at pointblank range has to be watched on Youtube.

The Uruguay lads are forming quite the double act.

Diego Ifran helped himself to his ninth goal of the season, and it is worth noting that he has scored as many goals for Tenerife as he has combined, since he moved to Spain in the summer of 2010.

He has developed a real understanding with Maxi Perez, and there is no doubt that Tenerife have finally stumbled across a strike partnership that will bear fruit.

In a contest so important to both sides, and with legendary goal scorer Nino making his long-awaited return to Santa Cruz, it was actually the struggling visitors who made the brighter start.

They had a couple of decent half-chances, if not a golden opportunity, before Tenerife woke up. And, ironically, just as Tenerife were getting a foothold, Merino somehow saw himself unmarked and eight yards out.

He connected well, but Dani is in the form of his life and the Venezuelan stood tall, strong and was not for passing.

A few minutes later Tenerife were ahead, and in a way which goes to show how important the men in gloves are.

A regulation Suso cross should have been gobbled up by Asier Riesgo. But the 31-year-old flapped like

Big Bird and spilled the ball into the path of another Real Sociedad old boy, Ifran, who couldn’t miss.

It was harsh on the visitors, but Tenerife were in control in the second half. A fine through-ball saw Maxi ghost past the last defender, but he seemed to overhit his control.

He showed his desire to chase the lost ball, kept it in, and chipped the ball to Ifran, whose volley lobbed Riesgo only to thump back off the bar heartbreakingly. It would have been a lovely goal.

Late on, a storming Cristo Martin run had the defence back-peddling. Ifran’s near-post run drew the centrebacks and Cristo’s deep cross found the unmarked Maxi.

He checked the keeper’s near-post move and, with a diving header, buried the ball inside the back post.

The smile was as wide as the Osasuna defence.

In the final minute, Nino won the sort of soft penalty which we use to applaud. And in front of the Armada Sur as well! Iranian legend Nekounam converted with ease, but the game was up.

He is the future for Tenerife and it will be interesting to see how he does.

He is under a bit of pressure and, in some way, Tenerife are in a no-win position. Dani has been the signing of the season and loves

the shirt. His family are from Tenerife and he wants to sign a longterm contract.

But Tenerife need to assure Carlos that he will get first-team action, or the youngster will go. There are dozens of top-name suitors. In many ways, that is a subject for another day. But if Carlos has a stormer, he will be hard to drop. Managers call it a lovely situation to Position

Some nail-biting drama had been on the cards over the last few weeks in the Division 2

run in as Waterfall Warriors and The Palms took turns at holding first place.

It all boiled down to Waterfalls’ single-point advantage with one match to play. In reality, The Palms needed a heavy win over Barracuda Hunters, and they achieved that with a 6-2 success. That was not to be enough, though, with the Warriors putting in a fine performance at Marilyns. A 7-1 victory sealed the championship in their very first season.

There was even more drama at Palms Sports Bar as they faced Chipeque Chippers in the battle for third place.

A last-gasp trebles leg win for the PSB gang

earned them a 6-2 victory, and the single point they needed to claim the trophy.

The two sides propping up the league both enjoyed wins in their last fixtures. Spear Chuckers beat The Rebels, and the Playgirls overturned Phoenix Flights, even with a first 180 for the POD. But, we ain’t finished with the darts just yet.

LAST week was a low point-scoring week in the Oasis Fm Fantasy League because, as I said, the so-called strikers were not netting, and especially as most managers have them as double point-scoring captains.

This week was a different story - with the exception of Sergio Aguero - as they were back among the goals. Notably, Harry Kane because his hat-trick provided a great points haul for those who had him as

captain.

As for the highest point-scoring team of the week, it was a mixed bag with players across the league chipping in with good performances.

Everton and Southampton, both victorious, led the way with two players from each side making the grade.

The rest were players from, Liverpool, Swansea, Man Utd, Man City, Spurs, Arsenal and Crystal Palace.

Gordon Wilson, with

his Coffee Shop Karma, deserves all the credit this week as he opened up his lead in the Oasis Fm league to 18 points.

Not only that, but he is also the manager and team of the week, scoring a mammoth 99 points.

He was helped by Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand, both Southampton defenders who hit double figures, and then he had Olivier Giroud up front scoring a brace, together with his captain, Kane, return-

ing 34 points with that hat-trick.

So it was a good week for Gordon, although 18 points can easily be made. He needs to stay on his toes now!

It is as you were at Oasis Fm Towers with Adi Benson still leading, but Chris Elkington had a better week and has reduced the gap to just 24 points ... and that means game-on!

Roscoe also had one of his best weeks, clawing a few points back from Chris, but he is still 98

points adrift. And if John Zammit were a racehorse, he would have been put out of his misery by now as he

is 109 points back. But he can console himself because his beloved Chelsea should win the League.

Gaffers after that perfect high WILL Gaffers A go through the season unbeaten? That’s the big question as we are now into the home straight of the Direct Telecom Pool League.

They had a tough fixture ahead of them on Tuesday with a trip up to Chayofa to face inform Treehouse A, who are battling for third spot. The home team quickly took advantage and found themselves 4-2 up.

The potential for a scalp was on the cards, but Gaffers are not top of the league for nothing. They worked through the gears and before Treehouse knew it, they were 7-4 down and, quickly, 8-4.

Most of the games were tight, and the leaders will have been relieved to leave with the win.

Hammers A, who are still chasing them, are hoping they will drop points. They entertained Terrace Bar B and were surprised by the visitors, who took a 3-1 lead, with Chris, Dan and Fin winning the early frames.

However, that was as far as it went because

Hammers handed them a lesson in pool by taking the next eight frames.

With The Phoenix and Palms Bar A not in action, and Treehouse A losing, Inn The Pink A had a great chance to move into third spot.

They were down in Los Abrigos to play Phoenix Potters, and it is always a difficult place to get a result.

But the home team seemed off-form as the visitors raced into a 5-0 lead.

Gary, Pod and Eric rallied to get it back to 5-3, but Rick and then captain John took the deciding frames and the points.

At the bottom of the league, Exiles B had a good chance to put some distance between themselves and the relegation battle as they travelled to Dreamers A. From a point’s point of view, there is not much between the two teams and it was a close game with early frames being traded.

It was not the highest standard of pool, and both sides will agree they wasted a plethora of chances. Steve was in good form for the hosts, though, racking up a hat-trick, while Gav lost his first two frames.

The Peacocks were looking to improve their chances of survival against Palms Bar B and, being the home team, took early 3-1 lead. This soon became 5-4, and they were confident of taking at least a point.

But Palms B have proved to be tough opponents this season, and they rattled off the final three frames for a

win. These two results offered a great opportunity for Terrace Bar A to move up the league towards safety as they took on bottom side Hammers C. However, only one team turned up - the visitors, who had fire in their bellies. And once they had their noses in front, they never looked back. It was a superb performance from Tony and his team.

But highlight of the night came from Terrace A’s Sparky against Tony, He played one shot, fouling off the break, never visited the table again ... but won!

It was a quiet night in Division Two, but Bluebell A took their opportunity to take a step closer to finishing second and gaining promotion to the top table.

They had a tough home fixture against James Place, who last season put in a good title and promotion challenge. But this time around they have been a little off the pace.

The match was a cagey affair, with both teams matching each other, and through the early frames it was difficult to pick a winner. But the home team eventually made a breakthrough and dragged themselves over the line for the points.

Hoppy’s Bar, looking to finish in the top half of the table, did their cause a world of good at home against Treehouse B, who have struggled to emulate the form of their A team.

Hoppy’s raced into an early lead and were always the stronger of the two teams. Treehouse had their chances, but they couldn’t convert them and it wasn’t long before the home team had the points in the bag.

The final match of the night saw Tenerife Pool Tables take on Next Door bar who, coincidentally are next door to them in the league.

It was one of those nights when everything went right for the home team. They took early frames and just kept coming, eventually enjoy a 9-3 win.

The Tenerife Pool Tables team was a real family affair on Tuesday, with Nick as captain and his missus Lorraine and 10-yearold son Harley both playing. And it turned into a nightmare for Next Door’s Craig Wagstaff.

All League players get nervous when facing a woman - taking nothing away from our female players because it leads to weeks of stick of you lose.

So imagine Craig’s red face when Lorraine beat him. And then, to rub it in, he suffered double trouble as he was also beaten by young Harley.

In fact, the 10-yearold won all three of his games in THE performance of the night, Well done Harley - and if anybody sees Craig, please feel free to remind him!

Chelsea just can’t fail

By Adi Benson WITH no Premier League action this weekend, I feel it’s a good time to have a look at the run-in to the end of the season at the top and the bottom of the table with just eight games remaining.

Well, apart from Chelsea and Leicester, who have yet to play an earlier postponed fixture.

At the top, I am looking at seven teams in terms of Champions League places because Swansea, in eighth place, are 10 points behind Spurs (in seventh) and are not going to break into this group.

At the bottom, we are looking at six teams, West Brom are currently 14th, eight points above the relegation zone and five above Hull, so I believe that they, along with the teams above them, are safe.

Let’s start at the top, I have taken a look at the remaining fixtures and predicted what I believe will be the outcome of each game, thus awarding points for draws and wins, and then added the total to each of the team’s current points to give me a top seven. But we will come to that in a minute.

Leaders Chelsea have looked the strongest all season. It will take a catastrophic collapse for them not to lift the trophy and I feel they will finish very strong, increasing their lead over rivals Man City even more.

City, of course, are the current champions but have had a poor season, dropping silly points. They continue to spend big, with £327 million invested since they sacked Mancini, bringing in 10 players.

Of those, only two are regular starters so, in essence, it is still Mancini’s team and they are now going backwards.

They must win every one of their remaining games to be in with a chance of retaining the title, but I can’t see it happening.

Arsenal have had a steady season and, in the first half, they were dragged through games

by Alexis Sanchez, who has faded of late. But they have continued to get results and are nicely poised to take second spot should City really slip up.

But as is the Arsenal way, they continue to pick up injuries. They will fall short this year - but with some wise summer spending, they could be a force next season.

Man Utd have been under a constant spotlight after a poor start, but they keep getting results and have moved into the top four, even with misfiring big-name signings such as Angel Di Maria and Falcao.

It looks like Van Gaal has started to get it right with team selection and formation as they are hitting a decent run of form at the right time. But they have a difficult run-in, with games to come against Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal, which will be defining matches.

Liverpool will look back on this season with what could have been full of highs after a poor start. Any team losing a player such as Suarez, and with an injury to Sturridge, would have been affected.

But Brendan Rodgers had the funds to invest and could have gone after a big-name striker, yet he gambled on Mario Balotelli and failed. He also bought in many younger signings, and they didn’t adapt quick enough. Some are showing promise now, but it is too late.

With games to come against Arsenal and Chelsea, the loss against Man Utd has probably finished off their fourthplace charge. Southampton have been the

season’s surprise, and many felt they would fall off the pace weeks ago.

But they are still there or thereabouts.

A couple of poor results against the lower teams have cost them, though, and they are just too far off now to finish top four. But they should be playing Europa League football next season, which will be a huge achievement for Ronald Koeman in his first season in charge. Spurs, in this same group, promised so much early on. But again, results against teams they should have been beating were not good enough and it has cost them dearly.

Harry Kane has obviously been the bright spot in the campaign and they must hope he is not just a flash in the pan. If they can get a decent striker to play alongside him next season, who knows what they might achieve?

So after deliberating over the final fixtures and made my prediction, this is how I believe the table will look come Sunday 24th May: Down at the bottom, it has been a real bunfight among the relegation-threatened teams.

The bottom three has changed so many times

that it has been hard to keep up.

But over the last few games, a clearer picture has started to form. Three teams in the bottom six have all recently changed managers, Sunderland being the latest by bringing in Dick Advocaat, a manager with no Premier League experience.

It has been a real car crash at the Stadium of Light and they have a pretty tough runin. And I do not see any fight in the players there, so they are facing a massive eight games.

At times, Hull looked capable of putting a run of results together, but they keep taking one step forward and then two backwards.

Home results kept them up last season, but they haven’t reproduced them this time and it is proving costly.

One thing you always expect from a Steve Bruce side is an organised defence, but they have conceded far too many goals. They also have a tough finish and I can’t see them picking up many points.

Aston Villa have had so many off-field problems to contend with since their chairman, Randy Lerner (still can’t say that name

without a smile), publicly put the club up for sale. Uncertainty can have an effect on the players and they have produced too many below-par performances.

Tim Sherwood has now taken the reins and they have looked much better with him.

But I can’t see many points in their final games.

It was good to see Leicester back in the Premiership, and over the first few games they looked as though they had never been away. Everybody remembers the 5-3 victory over Man Utd, but they gambled on £10m striker Ulloa, who had never played at this level, and it backfired.

They again spent heavily in the January transfer window, but results have just not come their way. Looking at their squad, I can’t see them bouncing straight back up if they do go down.

Burnley have been unlucky because they have gone long periods without strikers Sam Vokes and Danny Ings, who scored the goals that got them promoted.

They have taken points off the bigger teams - four off Man City and one at Stamford Bridge, but have struggled against their rivals. And you have to win your mini-leagues within the main league.

It will be a shame if they go down as I suspect one or two fans have developed a soft spot for them and their straight-speaking manager, Sean Dyche.

That just leaves QPR, abandoned by ‘Arry Redknapp because of a knee injury, and with only one away win all season. Charlie Austin aside, the whole squad have under-performed.

But with ageing players at the end of their careers, I am not sure what they expected.

Owner Tony Fernandes says he has his dream manager ready for next season and I would hazard a guess that it is not Chris Ramsey because he has hardly bathed himself in glory since he took over.

Whoever it is will be plying his trade in the Championship.
