Easter festivities for everyone to enjoy Continued from front. Adeje leads the way today, Good Friday, with a major production, which is being broadcast live on TVE2 and is expected to be watched by over 20,000. Under the direction of Nayra Medina Bethencourt, the greatest story ever told to man: The Passion of Jesus Christ, tells the life and death of Jesus of Nazareth. The major production gets underway at noon and will bring the town to a halt. More than 300 people registered to participate in the amateur production, which incorporates different parts of the town and the region. This annual event is one of the most important in the calendar. This is the third year that the crucifixion scene will be held at the Plaza of Spain. Mayor Jose Miguel Fraga said: “The Passion Play is an event of great importance in our town. The residents feel it, and this year we have over 300 people who make this an international event, a unique and different experience.” Medina Bethencourt said: “The televising of The Passion is a great showcase and a projection outwardly for tourism that promotes and adds value to the destination, which is already a
classic sun-and-sand borough. “But through events of this category, we show we can offer tourists something more.” ‘The Passion’ event has an improved focus on Herod and Pilate this year, and a different view on the important Jerusalem market. The new scenes aim to capture the atmosphere of the time. Another highlight is the participation of the students of Dance School of Music and Dance in Adeje. These dancers appear as the Herod and Beanky Ballet, which performs a dance in the context of the scene of the Last Supper of Jesus and his Apostles. There is also an increase in musical numbers, actors and also farm animals! Throughout March, the team of planners were working on the town’s Passion preparations, concerning props, costumes, script, sets, music and more. Because of all the changes, all those taking part have had to attend rehearsals since Monday on the Calle Grande. Over in Arona, there are special events in all the parishes. Mayor Francisco Nino relayed a message saying: “Devotion, faith and tradition come together in a celebration in a special way in our town. Mul-
tiple events will be held in different regions of Arona, and they will be observed by thousands of people who choose to spend a few days off and disconnect from the daily grind. “Many will celebrate in our temples and enjoy the processions and attractions, which give this diverse territory such a rich feeling. “Both groups, tourists and residents, devotees and those who are not, find they will enjoy this special time as we celebrate and mark the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. “At this time we remember our values, traditions and heritage. It is time to celebrate and show the utmost respect and desire to preserve them. “I challenge everyone to sit and enjoy the religious fervour of Easter Arona, because Faith is hope.” But all was not sweetness and light everywhere the South. Parishioners at the newlyrenamed Roman Catholic Church on San Blas, Golf del Sur, were disappointed to learn on Sunday that there would be no Good Friday Mass as usual. They were advised to attend a service at Los Cristianos, El Medano or Adeje. One long-standing parishioner said: “We’ve always had a Holy Week service
here on Good Friday, and it doesn’t make sense that we’re not having one this year. “And why on earth should we have to go elsewhere when we

Spanish economy SPAIN’S economy continues to grow at pace, and it could have reached 0.8% in the first three months of 2015, against the last quarter of 2014.
This comes as a result of lower consumer prices driving internal demand, according to the country’s central bank. The eurozone’s fourthlargest economy is likely to grow 2.5% on an annual basis in the first quarter, said the Bank of Spain in a monthly report. The Bank also raised its forecast for economic growth this year to 2.8% from a previous estimate of 2%, and it anticipates that the economy will grow 2.7% in 2016. Spain’s economy improved by 1.4% in 2014, the first year of expansion since the country’s realestate market collapsed in 2008. But though the sustained growth has been
ADEJE Farmers Market welcomed hundreds of visitors on Wednesday, during its first weekday opening.
From now on the market, which began six years ago, will open every Wednesday, between 4-8pm, as well as continuing with its regular Saturday and Sunday slots, from 8am to 1.30pm. To mark the extra day, Adeje Council has also organised a series of activities there on Wednesdays throughout April, which start-
welcomed by consumers, businesses and law-makers, the country’s unemployment rate is still a big worry. The jobless rate could be 22.2% at the end of this year, a slight decline from almost 24% at the end of 2014, and 20.5% in 2016, despite strong employment growth. This is mainly because, after two consecutive years of declines, the Bank of Spain anticipates a gradual recovery in the labour force. That is in keeping with recent population flow trends, which indicate lower emigration and increasing immigration to one of the eurozone’s few large economies which is growing significantly. It also points to an increase in the number of previously-discouraged job seekers, trying to start work again. Among the reasons for
Spain’s unexpectedlystrong economic take-off, the Bank of Spain cited wholesome, international demand for Spanish products amid a weaker euro and a continued slide in borrowing costs for the country’s companies. It also says that developments largely down to monetary-policy easing by the European Central Bank has played an important part. These factors may contribute to keeping Spain in deflationary conditions over the coming months, but the central bank said underlying inflation trends were turning positive in response to stronger consumer demand. It means that,
in the absence of further energy-price decreases, Spain’s consumer-price index may soon turn positive again. This should have a slightly negative effect on domestic demand, said the central bank, noting that private consumption should rise 3.3% this year and slow to 2.4% next year as price increases lead to less spending. Raj Badiani, an analyst with HIS Global Insight, said. “Deflation is one of the key s u p -
ports for an increasinglybroad-based recovery, with falling prices helping to end the prolonged decline in real incomes.” On average, the Bank of Spain said the nation’s CPI should fall 0.2% this year and rise 1.2% in 2016.
Midweek market is a huge success ed with a jam-making workshop. Other plans during the month will feature tastings, a shoppingbasket raffle, flowerarranging, cup-cakemaking, and healthy eating, as well as bouncy castles for the youngsters. Since the market opened to the public, it has been a success among residents and visitors, attracting an
average of 2,500 people every weekend. Given the vast interest, the Council carried out a questionnaire some months ago, asking shoppers if they would be interested in a weekday opening. The overwhelming, positive response was mirrored by those working in the restaurant sector, who use the market for their
fresh fruit and vegetables, given the consistently-high quality of produce. Adeje Council then consulted sellers and suppliers with market stalls to pick the weekday that would best suit them. Today, the Farmers Market has also expanded its range of produce, meeting the needs of Adeje’s various international
communities, as well as stalls selling local wines, cheeses, eggs, ecological and conventional produce, flowers, honey and some meat products, cakes and biscuits. The Council has also approved a number of modifications to the orders regulating the market, which is offered as a public service. Some changes will
see a more efficient relationship between the Council and those wanting a market stall, as well as improving the Council’s inspection service and visits to the farms with produce for sale. The inspections will cover transport and sales operations to guarantee good practice, and also minimise the use of non-renewable energy sources.

Short-cut passports has ended BRITISH citizens living abroad must now apply to renew their passports in the standard way.
That’s because one of the contingency measures brought in to cope with the exceptional demand last year is coming to an end. The Home Secretary announced the introduction of the 12-month extension stamp for overseas customers in June last year. More than 20,000 customers benefited from the contingency measure, introduced to prevent the disruption of travel plans. With passport demand returning to expected levels, the Home Secretary has reviewed the provision and, from next Friday (10th April), British passportholders overseas should follow the guidance for their country of residence on GOV.UK. Her Majesty’s Passport Office (HMPO) will contact those holding a passport with an extension stamp at least two months before the
expiry of their stamp, to encourage renewal. Immigration and Security Minister James Brokenshire said: “Following the significant demand for passports last year, the Home Secretary introduced 12-month extension stamps so that those British passport holders abroad whose passports were about to expire could travel. “This was a temporary measure to ensure that international customers were still able to travel during what was an exceptional period of demand. “Overseas turnaround times have improved significantly and are now well within service standards. But we still encourage all overseas passport-holders to apply in good time to avoid disruption to their travel plans.” He added: “HMPO will provide a sevenworking-day service for those customers with an extension stamp if they submit all the correct documentation to HMPO in the UK within a specified period of six weeks of being contacted.”
Cut your speed! THE Easter weekend will bring more policecontrolled road-blocks and a sharp rise in the number of speed cameras. According to an official police statement, there will be 22 extra speed cameras in operation over the next few days, just waiting to snap drivers in the Canaries. Gran Canaria motorists will face the highest number of radars, with 11 being installed ahead
of the religious festivities. Most of those will be on the GC1. Tenerife will have six new cameras and, as you would expect, the TF-1 is being targeted It is understood that one new camera will be at the 14km mark in the North, and another at the 59km sign in the South. The locations of the others is a mystery, so drive safely - and watch your speedometer!

Armeñime roundabout such a relief for drivers NEXT year should signal an end to the daily grind of tailbacks in the Adeje area, thanks to the new Armeñime roundabout, which should be open then.
It will connect to the TF-1 motorway from Armeñime, El Puertito, Playa Paraiso and Callao Salvaje, to the relief of commuters. The road is used by up to 21,000 drivers a day, and currently links commuters within Adeje and further afield, to Guía de Isora and Santiago del Teide. Full details were outlined on Tuesday by Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and José Luis Delgado, the Cabildo’s Councillor for Roads. It will reduce trafficflow problems hugely, and improve road-safety at the busy intersection. This stretch of road has one of the highest densities of traffic on the Island, and regular users will be well aware of the tailbacks at turns into Armeñime, as well as the problems at the entrance/exit road to El Puertito. The Cabildo representative said that while there were no plans yet to include a footpath alongside the road, but phase two, further down the line, will include a
pedestrian overpass. Initial difficulties acquiring the land needed for the roundabout construction caused some delay to the project, but those have now been overcome. Both administrations have approved the plans, now available for interested compa-
nies to submit bids for the work, which should begin in a few months and be completed next year. The overall project cost should be around 1.2m ieuros, 50% of which will be paid by the Council and the other half by the Cabildo. The work and im-
provements are seen as important both for road users and residents, as well as for tourists travelling to and from other parts of the island. It will also be a boost for new projects in the pipeline, such as the El Puertito development and the future Fonsalía port.

Tourists spend a fortune
TOURIST spending in Spain has his a record high in the first two months of 2015, with 6.57bn euros flooding into the country - an increase of 8% on the same period last year.
Total spending by the tourists between January and February was the best figures for this period since records were started by the Tourist Expenditure Survey (EGATUR). They were drawn up by the General Subdirectorate of Tourism Information, and Studies of the Ministry for Industry, Energy and Tourism. The average spend per day rose by 5.4% to 113 euros, and the average spend per tourist rose by 3.4% to 1,018 euros. Visitors from the UK led the way by spending a total of 1.11bn euros - an increase of 10.6% with France( 641m euros, up by 18.6%) a surprise second. But it was job done for the tourism promotion team as Italy posted outstanding growth, with total spending of 40.2%. The highest increases in tourist spending in the period were posted by Andalusia, at 18.9%, the Balearic Islands, 13.4% and Madrid, 13%. The monthly record
previously held in February 2014, was also surpassed this time, with a total spend of 3.17bn, which was a year-onyear increase of 6.4%. The average spend per tourist and the average spend per day also rose to 964 euros and 112 euros respectively. The UK was the top market, accounting for 16.9% of total inbound tourist spending in Spain. The average daily spend by British tourists rose by 13.6% to 99 euros and the average spend per tourist rose by 7.7% to 909 euros. In February, British tourists spent a total of 564m euros, an increase of 6.2% and 17.8% of the total. Germany posted a total of 991m in the two months, which was up 0.8% against last year. This equates to 15.1% of the total. German tourists spent 479m euros in February - 15.1% of the total and a 5.7% drop. This was because of a 12.3% fall in the average length of stay, and an 8.9% drop in the average spend per person, as the number of tourists arriving from this market decreased. This performance particularly affected the Canary Islands and Catalonia. Tourists from the Nordic markets spent a total of 846m, which was down 9.8% on last year and represented 12.9% of the total. In February, spending by tourists from those
markets amounted to 425m, down 14% compared with February 2014 and accounting for 13.4% of the total. This was because fewer tourists travelled to Spain from these countries, together with reductions in both the average spend per tourist and the average spend per day. The Canary Islands were affected most by
this downturn. France posted the highest improvement at 18.6%, with 641m forked out - 9.8% of the total. In February, the emerging French market saw more tourists than before spend a total of 313m , which was up by 14.2%. Again, this was the highest increase of all the emerging markets, which bumped up the average
French spend per trip and a longer period (6.3 nights). With increases of 40.2%, and 43.8% in February, Italy had the highest levels. Its tourists spent 298m, which was 4.5% of the total, and 141m in February, also adding up to 4.5%. A 20.5% increase in tourists from Italy and a 19.4% improvement in the average spend per
tourist affected this result. The remaining markets spent a total of 2.68bn, up by 11.5% and amounting to 40.8% of the total, These markets spent a total of 1.24bn in February, up 16.1% and 39.3% of the total. The largest increases were posted by the US and Belgium. The Canary Islands had the highest inbound tourist spending figure at 2.39bn - a 3.3% increase and amounting to 36.4% of the total. The average daily spend there rose by 7.2% to 118 euros., while in February, the 1.13bn-euro total spend dropped by 0.8%. This was caused by a decrease in the average spend per tourist, while the average daily outlay rose by 2.6% - some 35.7% of the total.
Jobless rate eases deflation FIGURES demonstrate that the Eurozone deflation eased in March as the unemployment rate dropped slightly last month.
The EU’s statistics office found that consumer prices fell by 0.1% in March from a year earlier, as against a 0.3% fall in February. The downward pressure on prices has come from the drop in energy
costs, but which now appear to be levelling out. The unemployment rate in the eurozone fell from 11.4% to 11.3% in February. The total decline of 329,000 in the number of eurozone jobless in the three months to February is the largest three-month fall since the three months to April 2007. These numbers suggest that companies are becoming more willing to step up hiring, encouraged by re-
ally low oil prices, a markedly-weaker euro and a major stimulus from the European Central Bank (ECB). In January the ECB announced a quantitative-easing programme to purchase more than £730bn in assets - pumping money into the banking system to boost the eurozone economy, and stave off deflation. Despite the headline rate rising to -0.1%, core annual inflation - which excludes energy and food prices - continued
to fall, dropping to 0.6% from 0.7% in February. Jonathan Loynes, chief European economist at Capital Economics, said: “The latest data on eurozone inflation and unemployment do little to diminish the danger of a prolonged period of deflation in the currency union. “The increase was driven entirely by higher food and energy inflation, partly reflecting, no doubt, the drop in the euro during the month.”

It’s just a jump to the left
IT seemed as though the whole island had nipped off to Barcelona last weekend. The Robbie Williams concert was a big draw, and plenty stayed on for the CD Tenerife match with Barcelona B and The Script concert on the Monday night.
I love Barcelona and so nearly moved there in 2003. My job at the time saw me flying around the UK four or five days a week and it was actually cheaper to commute from Barcelona. Throw in the day-today cost of living, the sunshine and, I hate to admit it, the status of living there, and it was so tempting. It didn’t quite come off, but maybe one day! So while secretly feeling a little jealous of those on the mainland, I had a long weekend in Puerto de la Cruz. I’ve not been up there for a while, but, as anyone
who has will tell you, it hasn’t changed. And I mean one bit. They say that Chernobyl is the best example of a town stuck in a time warp. Well let me throw PDLC into that hat. There is nothing wrong with the place it just feels like it’s the Seventies. I lost count of the number of banks, farmacias and gambling shops. Quaint it ain’t. I had a great time, before you ask, but it did make me appreciate “home” a little more. The “south” of 2015 is streets ahead of the 2000 version, and a different world from the glory years of the late Eighties and early Nineties. For those who hanker after the old Tenerife, then look no further than PDLC. I will take progress, imagination, flair, comfort, excitement, vibrancy, shopping and a proper nightlife every day of the week. There was one little gem in PDLC. I found a little place that served the most amazing 45-year-old bottle of wine. Drinking something that is older than you are is a rarity… a fine new hobby!

Dear Editor, In September 2014, a European Court decision removed the Spanish Government’s unfair discrimination against non-resident property owners in respect of Inheritance Tax. Non-resident property owners can now recover any money paid in the last four years. The European Court case came about as a result of my complaint to Brussels, initially made as long ago as 2008 (together with a complaint in relation to Capital Gains Tax). I, of course, make nothing out of this, and nor did I expect to. However, many people may now be in for an unexpected windfall. If they feel they might owe me a debt of gratitude, I invite them to make a donation to the Prostate Cancer Charity (www. prostatecanceruk.org) to whom I (and many others) owe a debt of gratitude. Additionally, perhaps the European Court’s decision may come as a further warning to the Spanish Government to stop using nonresident property owners unfairly as a milch cow. An injustice remains in that those who succeed in getting their money back will probably not be able to recover their costs (despite costs having been awarded against the Spanish Government by the European Court). Dear Editor, I am a resident of 14 years, and I meet a lot of visitors during the course of the year, many of whom have become friends. I am increasingly concerned about the amount of muggings occurring around Los Cristianos that I know about, and probably many more I don’t hear about. I read in last week’s paper about the lucky lucky man who got his wife’s phone, bag and purse back intact. Very rare! So many visitors are not so lucky and lose their wallets, bags, phones, etc, with no hope for recompense. On the whole the police aren’t interested, even if they turn up in response to a call. I know this is going on all the time and it isn’t giving Tenerife a very good reputation. Many people I’ve spoken to in recent weeks have said they won’t be coming back after many, many, years of having holidays here. I was accosted twice in the supermarket about eight years ago in the space of about 20 minutes by two Romanian youngsters, trying to distract me enough to snatch my bag. I am partially disabled, and I’m not young. I was on my own and the incidents have left me very reluctant to go anywhere, to do shopping particularly. I now have to pay someone to take me and come with me, so that I feel less vulnerable. It is a sad state of affairs and has destroyed my confidence. I know most of the stores have security, which is minimalistic, but shouldn’t they be doing more? Also, where are all these police who are so often being recruited? Holiday-makers and, indeed, residents are being robbed in broad daylight, and one of them, late at night as well after an enjoyable night out which has then turned very sour. To whoever is in control, please do something about this upsetting state of affairs, before the numbers of visitors to this lovely Island dry up. Name supplied.

Driving licences - the final word!
The changes to European driving licences have been in a place for a few weeks now, but there is still confusion. And that’s before local myths enter the mind. So to clarify matters we have teamed up with the N332.es website to explain a few issues. N332.es is a brilliant site which keeps you up to date with all the latest traffic developments and laws along with tips and advice direct from Guardia Civil police officers. N332.es will contribute regular columns in the Canarian Weekly, so if you have anything in particular you wish to know about, then feel free to email us at editor@canarianweekly.com To clarify some of the confusion arising over foreign residents in Spain changing their driving licence for a Spanish version, the DGT has issued a number of clarifications for both drivers and police in dealing with the issue. Firstly, if your licence has an indefinite date, or more than 15 years’ validity, and you were legally resident in Spain before 19th January 2013, you should have already renewed your licence. If you became resident after that date, you have two years from your residency date to renew. Secondly, if your licence has expired or is about to, you must renew it in your country of residence. In other words, if you are resident in Spain, your current licence must be renewed in Spain once it expires. Also important is the fact that Spain has adopted a transitional period in which resident drivers must comply, because there are so many foreigners living in the country. No sanctions or fines will be issued before 1st January 2016 to allow drivers sufficient time to renew their licence. However, if drivers are stopped by traffic police and have failed to renew their licence and exchange it for a Spanish equivalent, their details will be forwarded to the DGT and added to the central computer system. It means that if drivers are stopped again and still haven’t changed their licence within a six-month period - and after the 1st January enforcement date - sanctions will be applicable and a 200-euro fine issued. But it will be okay if a driver can prove that an appointment has been made, and the renewal
is scheduled, even if beyond the six-month or final-date period. The driver, when stopped in the first instance, will also be given an information sheet, in Spanish, detailing the reasons why the licence must be renewed, and the procedure for doing so. If there is any doubt about the driver’s residency, the police will still record his/her details and send them to the traffic department to investigate the official status of that driver. Incidentally, the European Commission has asked Member States - including Spain - to show flexibility since the main objective is to standardise the administrative situation of driving licences for EU citizens. It’s worth once again pointing out that Article 15 paragraph 4 of the Reglamento General de Conductores makes it compulsory for those driving licences which carry an indefinite date, or more than 15 years validity for Group 1 drivers (AM, A1, A2, A , B and BE), or five years
for group 2 (BTP, C1, C1E, C, CE D1, D1E, D, DE), and held by drivers who are resident in Spain for more than two years time, to renew their licences. Here are two examples: 1. The holder of a European driving licence with an indefinite duration or greater than 15 (or five years in the case of group permissions 2) with legal residence in Spain acquired on January 19, 2013 or before that date – You must renew your driving licence from January 19, 2015. 2. The holder of a European driving licence with an indefinite duration or greater than 15 (or five years in the case of group permissions 2) with legal residence in Spain obtained dated
after January 19, 2013 – You must renew your driving licence from the moment two years of residence in Spain has been met. So if your residency was validated on April 3rd 2014 you must renew by April 3rd 2016. Meanwhile Article 15, paragraph 4, option 5A
of the Reglamento General de Conductores details how the rules relating to driving with a European licence once residency has been achieved would come effective and enforceable from January 19, 2015, throughout the Europe-
an territory. The European Commission asked Member States to show flexibility in implementing this new regulation, since the main objective is to regularise the administrative situation of driving licences for EU citizens. As Spain has a considerable number of citizens who must renew their licences flexibility will be accompanied by communication and an outreach campaign to inform all European citizens living in the country. Consequently, filing complaints and sanctions for drivers who have not renewed their licence once the two year residency period has been reached cannot be carried out automatically, but would see drivers advised in the initial period of the need to change their licences, whilst allowing a reasonable amount of time for the change and renewal of driving licences to be made. For these reasons, it is necessary to establish a transitional period during which drivers who have not yet complied with the law have ample time to become aware of the change. Therefore, the date of January 1, 2016, is the date when the law would become enforceable by fines, and sanctions must not be levied before that date. Another point worth remembering is the directive also requires the Police to check the reverse of the driving licence for validity, not just the front. This is to ensure not only that the permit has not expired, but also to check for an indefinite validity or if it exceeds 15 years of validity for AM, A1, A2, A, B and BE, or indefinite or more than 5 year validity for BTP, C1, C1E, C permits, CE D1, D1E, D, DE.

Murdered pair found ‘in each other’s arms’ A FORMER British Olympic diver and his wife, shot dead in their villa in a remote area of Spain, were found by a friend.
The bodies of Peter and Jean Tarsey, both 77, were discovered at their home in Xalo, in the wine region of the Jalon valley near Benidorm, at around 4pm on Sunday. They were, said police, “locked in each other’s arms” on the sofa. Neighbours invited to the couple’s home for a dinner party raised the alarm when they couldn’t get in to the property, and there was no answer when one of them rang. They then found the front door open and contacted the police, who have launched a murder investigation. Mr Tarsey competed for Britain in the 1956 summer Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia, in the springboard and platform events. He was 19 at the time and was 16th and 14th respectively. He also competed in the 1954 and 1958 Commonwealth Games. The local mayor said the couple had been living in the region for almost two decades, and were thought to be from west London. Mrs Tarsey’s social media account reveals the couple put their house on the market in February 2014 for 230,000 euros (£170,000), and it was still up for sale. It is set in an acre of grounds and has a large swimming pool and mountain views. It is on the edge of Xalo, a small town in the scenic the Jalon valley, and has around 3,000 residents. Expat Susan Keightley, had known the couple since they bought the villa in 1990. The 72-year-old, who lived just 160 yards from them, said: “Everyone here is absolutely devastated.
“Jean and David were such a lovely couple, and it’s so terrible to think they were shot in their own home. “Jean did a lot of work for local charities, including one looking after abandoned dogs. She also did a lot of Reiki healing for her friends in the area. “David was a bit of a workaholic who couldn’t sit still, so he was always working in the garden. “He had been an Olympic diver, and a few years ago we used to dive into their swimming pool from the garden wall. “He was an engineer back in the UK and sold his business when they moved to Spain. “They have a little black-and-white mongrel dog called Domino who, I believe, was still in the house when the bodies were found. “They had been burgled a couple of times, once at Christmas about 10 years ago and one summer before that.” She added: “During the Christmas burglary, David was asleep in a chair in the front room and didn’t even wake up. He woke up to find they had stolen the jewellery. “But it was a long time ago and not something they were particularly worried about recently. “They put the house up for sale because they were hoping to move to Majorca to be nearer one of their sons, Sascha, and their grandchildren. I hope the police catch whoever did it and throw away the key.” Detectives are believed to be investigat-
ing whether the couple were killed in a bungled robbery after they found their television was missing, and their computer floating in the swimming pool. Jalon Mayor Miquel Garces said: “Nothing like this has ever happened here before.” adding that the police had ruled out domestic violence and suicide as motives. The pair had a safe containing valuables, but this was still locked when officers arrived. Spanish news sites reported that the couple each died from a shot to the head, thought to be from a small-calibre pistol, and that shell casings were found around the bodies. A British friend, a local estate agent who asked not to be named, said: “The Tarseys were my closest friends. I’m too upset to speak about it at the moment as I am still in a state of shock. I still can’t really believe it.” She said the couple had two sons, Alexei and Sascha, who have been told of the tragedy. Jalon Mayor Garces said: “Police are looking for a third person as the attacker. It’s a very strange feeling because we all know each other.” Ten years ago, hundreds of home-owners were subjected to violent robberies on their homes along the Alicante coastline. The victims, mostly British expats, were knocked out with sleeping gas before being tied up and robbed. The spate of robberies ended when police arrested a gang made up mostly of Kosovans and Albanians.

Baby girl slaughtered in horrific family stabbing A BABY girl of just six weeks was among a family of four found stabbed to death in a suspected m urder - su ic ide scenario in a Gibraltar apartment.
A 31-year-old man, reportedly from Liverpool, and his Spanish partner, 37, were found dead alongside a fouryear-old Spanish girl and the baby on Monday. It is understood that all four had stab wounds, while the woman and the girls, reportedly, had their necks slashed. Police officers begin investigations in Gibraltar after they were found stabbed to death inside an apartment at at 11.35am. Police on the British enclave say they
are not looking for any suspects in connection with the deaths. A major police investigation was launched and detectives and forensic officers were working in the flat while the area remained cordoned off. The family, who have been identified by police but so far not named, were found in the rented apartment in the Boschetti’s Steps area. Spanish media reported that they had been living in Spain and had
arrived in Gibraltar just a few days earlier. Police said it was not clear if they were there in transit or had moved to the area. Police confirmed that the man was British, while the women had Spanish nationality but was originally from Cuba. The four-year-old girl was the woman’s daughter from a previous relationship, while the baby was born to the couple in Spain. Police were called to
the scene after a member of the company which owns the property went to the apartment. The person did not get any response from knocking on the door but noticed that the property was locked from the inside. Police sources say the door to the flat was not forced, and the three females all had cuts to their necks. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo led a minute’s silence at the Parlia-
ment of Gibraltar following the horrific news. He said the Government couldn’t comment any further. until the police had completed their investigation. But he added: “As a husband and father, I’m shocked by this terrible crime, as, I am sure, are all residents of Gibraltar. “Gibraltarians aren’t used to these types of events in our peaceful community, respectful of the law.
“Words are not enough in moments such as this, and all we can do is keep the victims and their families in our thoughts - and trust that justice will prevail.’ The family had reportedly been living in Spain and had recently arrived in Gibraltar to visit a friend. Police spokesman Superintendent Richard Ullger said: “We have contacted close relatives but we cannot yet give out any names. “The deaths are not natural deaths, and we are carrying out a major investigation, with the Serious Crime Unit. At the moment, we are still investigating the circumstances of their deaths. “A Home Office pathologist and a specialist paediatric pathologist have flown here to carry out the autopsies. We are not looking for anyone else at this stage.”

Some renters stayed home FOR the first time in a while, the number of tourists renting apartments fell last month in the Canaries.
Across all the islands, the number who stayed overnight in an apartment was down 6.47%, compared with the same month last year. In February, 2,507,887 stayed, against 2,681,452 in 2014, according to data from the INE (National Institute of Statistics), The INE’s Survey of Tourist Accommodation Occupancy showed that the number of longterm residents in Spain also fell, compared with the same time last year. There were 113,088

fewer “residential” apartments rented in February 2015, compared with 2014. Nationally, there were 267,108 fewer “holiday apartment” rentals in February than a year ago and the average stay was also down. The 2014 average was 10.04 days per trip, which fell to 9.46, according to the INE. A number of theories have been put forward for the drop, but poor winter weather in Spain is mainly blamed. So far, 2015 has been the coldest start to a year in a generation, and this has persuaded winter-sun holidaymakers and last-minute bookers to head for warmer destinations, such as Miami and Egypt.
CARLY Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard chief executive believes her chances of her running for the 2016 US presidency are excellent - “higher than 90%”, in fact.
The potential Republican candidate will announce her plans late this month or early May. She was working to establish her team and put together what she described as “the right support” and financial resources for a challenge. The 60-year-old is one of several potential Republican Presidential candidates. They include former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee
and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. Earlier this month, Texas Senator, Republican Ted Cruz became the first major figure from either political party to formally announce his 2016 presidential bid. Among Democrats, Hillary Clinton is expected to be the front-runner for the nomination, although she has yet to announce her plans formally. Mrs Fiorina speaking to Fox News, criticised Mrs Clinton’s legacy as Secretary of State, saying: “Flying i s
an activity, not an accomplishment.” She also said Mrs Clinton, a former First Lady and New York senator, lacks accomplishment, is •”not candid”, and “made a deliberate effort to shield her
communications” while at the State Department by using a private server and email accounts. Mrs Fiorina, who ran unsuccessfully for the US Senate in 2010, also defended her tenure as Hewlett-Packard’s top executive from 1995 to 2005. During her time, the technology company laid off tens of thousands of workers, and saw its stock price plummet during the dotcom bubble before she was fired. She said: “We took Hewlett-Packard from about $44bn to $88bn in six years. We quadrupled cash flow. “We went from a market laggard to a market leader in every product category and every market segment.”

Fond farewell to the Blind faith! oldest living person! Partially-sighted fund-raiser hits a darts maximum
HOW does a blind man slot three arrows into the treble 20 on a dart board for that maximum 180 score, treasured by all club players and even the pros?
Just ask Robert Boon, a 50-year-old Devonian from Paignton, who achieved the feat during a 10-hour charity gig he organised to raise funds for two guide dogs. He was actually investigated for benefit fraud after his magical feat after being reported to the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), probably by an onlooker, who said he was too good to be blind. “Everything went okay, but then I got a letter from the DWP,” said Robert, who is registered blind because he is completely blind in one eye and can see shadows only in the other one. “I rang them up because I couldn’t read the letter and they explained to me that someone had reported me because of the dart marathon. “There were loads of people there, so it could have been someone at the event. I felt humiliated because I don’t think it is right to report me when I have tried to do something good.” He added: “I don’t see why people should put me down. I feel really intimidated because I am registered blind and can’t see virtually anything out of one eye and shadows in the other one.” Robert who uses a guide dog, wanted to raise the money towards two more, in memory of two recently-deceased friends because he knows how important they could be for individuals with impaired sight. Happily for him the DWP has confirmed that it does not intent to cut Robert’s benefits following an investigation So how on earth did he manage to slot three darts into the treble-20? Mr Boom explained that because of the repetitive action of dart-
throwing, he was able to maintain some degree of accuracy. Having played darts for fun before he losing his sight, Robert decided the event was the best way to raise the cash. Throughout the day, at the Pond Coffee Shop in Paignton, Robert racked up 61,000 points and at one point a maximum 180 with three darts. He felt the whole episode was unfair, especially because he was trying to help people like himself. He stepped up to the oche at 10am, and was throwing darts all day, with a five-minute rest every hour, until nearly 9pm. Robert said: “I’ve always had bad eyesight, I was never allowed to drive or even play football. The only sports I was allowed to do was judo or darts. “Two of my friends passed away recently, and I wanted to name guide dogs after them, so that their names could live on. I was watching TV a while back and saw a blind darts team, so I decided to give it a go. “I knew the layout of the board, and when you’ve been playing for 10 hours straight, you start to get a gauge for where things are on the board. A DWP spokesman said: “It’s only right that we investigate a person’s benefit claim when we receive information that suggests they may not be entitled.” Robert worked in the hotel business until he was diagnosed blind three years ago. He is married to Donna, 52. and has 11-year-old Lauren from a previous relationship, He has said he will continue in his efforts to raise money for guide dog training, despite recent events. However, Robert said he had questioned whether he should go on after receiving the DWP’s letter and having his story reported in the local Torquay Herald Express newspaper. It has been suggested that some teams in the Oasis Fm Darts League are keen to sign him up!
MISAO Okawa, at 117 the world’s oldest living person, has died from heart failure in the city where she was born on 5th March 1898!
The Japanese phenomena, who died in a nursing home in Osaka, is survived by three children, four grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. In 2013, Guinness World Records acknowledged Ms Okawa as the world’s oldest living woman, and
the oldest living person as well. While celebrating her final birthday last month - on national TV - Mrs Okawa said that 117 years did not seem such a long time. She also said the key to a long life was getting at least eight hours of sleep a night and eating sushi - her favourite food. S h e also en-
joyed mackerel on vinegar-steamed rice. She was born to a kimono-maker and married her husband Yukio in 1919. They lived in Kobe where he ran a business, but when he died in 1931 she moved back to Osaka. She lived across three centuries, seeing four emperors of Japan, s i x British
monarchs, and 20 US presidents. Craig Glenday, editorin-chief of Guinness World Records, said previously of Ms Okawa: “Her impressive longevity is an inspiration and a testament to the Japanese lifestyle.” Mrs Okawa’s name has since been removed from the organisation’s site as the world’s oldest living person. It is not yet known who now holds that record, but the site says the oldest living man is Sakari Momoi, also of Japan, who turned 112 in February. The oldest person ever, according to Guinness, was Jeanne Calment, of France, who lived 122 years and 164 days. She died in August 1997.
Double Brit killer sentenced to hang A MALAYSIAN man found guilty of murdering two British medical students in Borneo has been sentenced to death by hanging.
Fishmonger Zulkipli Abdullah, 23, denied murder, but admitted being involved in a street fight with Aidan Brunger and Neil Dalton, along with two other men. The Newcastle University students, both 22, were stabbed in a bar in Kuching, Sarawak, last August. In a joint statement,
the parents of Mr Dalton, from Ambergate, Derbyshire, and Mr Brunger, from Hempstead, Kent, paid tribute to their sons. Phil and Jan Dalton and Paul Brunger and Sue Hudson spoke of the devastation their deaths had caused. “They were two exceptional young men with such promise - kind, funny and full of life. Their deaths have left their families and many good friends utterly devastated,” it read. “Our sons would soon have qualified as doctors. Their unprovoked and senseless murders as they were walking home after a night out
with other medical students mean that Aidan and Neil will never have the chance to spend their lives caring for and helping others. “They would have given so much to the world. We are so very proud of both of them and in what they achieved in their all too short lives. “Although we are pleased that the man responsible for their murders has been held accountable, the guilty verdict does not bring our sons back.” Paul Brunger. who was in court, said the loss of his son was “devastating”, adding: “The case itself has been very shocking to people here. Many have told us that this is a peaceful place, a tourist town where foreigners are welcome. “People said such violent incidents were rare, and they hope it will not tarnish their image and prevent tourists from coming here in the future. “We spoke to officials at the Sarawak General
Hospital and they did not say any students were scared of attending the programme since these murders. They did, however, say they have warned the students to be careful about staying out too late in the bar district. “They have not added any extra security protection for them. They see this as a one-off incident.” The murdered youngsters had almost completed a work placement at a hospital in Kuching. They were found sprawled in the road by cafe workers in the Jalan Padungan area of the city in the early hours of 6th August last year. The trial heard that Zulkipli Abdullah admitting being involved in a fight with the two students and punching one of them. But he denied stabbing them or carrying a knife. He is expected to appeal against the judgement.

IN September 2014, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) passed a Judgment declaring the Spanish inheritance tax laws as discriminatory towards non-residents and against the EU Treaty.
Now, at least for Spanish Legal Reclaims SL - an EU tax specialised law firm - claimants are all receiving their money back from the Spanish Tax Authorities. The company has achieved a 100% success rate, with average refunds of 25,000 euros. However, as many as 100,000 Britons affected could be entitled to reclaim. Other European citizens affected can also come forward to make a claim On 3rd Sept 2014, the ECJ ruled that the Spanish Inheritance laws were discriminatory, contravening European Union Treaty, because Spanish non-residents were paying up to 34% of the inheritance value, while residents paid virtually nothing. An action group called

You can recover money from Spanish Tax office Spanish Legal Reclaims (SLR) recently launched a dedicated website www.spanishlegalreclaims.com to inform possible claimants how to file a claim Spanish Legal Reclaims’ legal team recently won against the Spanish State in a similar case before the Spanish and European Courts, as Spanish legislation regarding Capital Gains Tax was also discriminating against non-residents. The team, led by Luis Cuervo, helped thousands of clients recover the overcharged taxes they paid in Capital Gains Tax. And they are now successfully recovering the inheritance
tax for non-Spanish residents. Mr Cuervo, head of SLR, said: “Despite the opinion of many professionals, we were again right in predicting that the ECJ’s ruling would be positive. “But the most important fact is that, as we began to file claims two years ago, before the ECJ’s ruling, we started to receive refunds for our first 25 clients three weeks ago, with a 100% success rate. All our other clients should start to receive their refunds soon. “This is very important because succeeding in this kind of claim is not easy, and it is clear now that our precise strat-
egy, procedure and legal arguments are correct. “Potential claimants must be aware that this is not an ordinary reclaim. Facing a legal procedure like this requires not only expertise but also deep analysis, a clear legal strategy and experience in similar claims. “As anyone who has been affected by this illegal tax can claim only once, we strongly recommend they file their claims with an experienced expert in EU tax law. “If, for some reason, they fail by using an inexperienced lawyer in reclaims, they will not get a second chance to file.”
Mr. Cuervo added: “Once the claim is filed, people affected could recover their money within 6-8 months, with up to 4% compound interest. We offer our clients a No Win-No Fee agreement. “Since we started this reclaim, about 1,000 UK/EU families have already come forward to file their claims with us. After the ECJ ruling, those figures will expand greatly. “Many Spanish and UK/EU lawyers are cooperating with us to help their own clients, once they understand that the legal process requires deep analysis and expertise, not only in domestic tax but
also EU regulations and court procedures. “The cases must be won, one by one. We urge anyone else who believes he or she has been affected by this tax discrimination to come forward. Taking quick action is important because the right to make a reclaim may expire through legal time-limits for making a tax reclaim in Spain.” For more information, and details of how to register your interest, visit: www.spanishlegalreclaims.com Spanish Legal Reclaims Helpline: UK 0845 680 3849 +34 936 804 563Email inquiries: info@spanishlegalreclaims.com

David Suchet: In The Footsteps Of St Peter BBC1, 09.00
David’s journey begins in Rome, where the story of Peter ends, as David deciphers how a fisherman from Galilee became the founding figure of one of the most powerful Church movements in history. David believes that experiencing events ‘through the eyes of Peter’ will give him a unique perspective. This includes joining Rome’s fire brigade to learn of the great fire that led to Peter’s crucifixion. David travels to the port of Bethsaida, at the Sea of Galilee in Israel, where Peter was among the first disciples to be chosen to work. He then visits Capernaum and the sacred site of Peter’s home where Jesus possibly set up base, and also tries his hands at fishing by the remains of the first century ‘Jesus Boat’. Throughout his travels around Israel, David meets biblical scholars, archaeologists and fishermen as he pieces together St Peter’s story. He explores the miraculous ‘Walking on Water’ that was reported to have taken place on the Lake of Galilee where Peter’s faith was put to the test. And back in Jerusalem, David attempts to understand the first-century city that Peter and Jesus knew by visiting The Israel Museum’s impressive model. Although Peter did not witness the crucifixion, he is named as the first male apostle to have seen the empty tomb, so David travels to the holiest site in Christianity - the Church of the Holy Sepulchre - where tradition says Jesus was crucified and buried. David reflects on the events of Peter’s life that led him from Galilee to Jerusalem and the horrible death of Jesus - the man he had come to love, respect and follow.

Louis Theroux: Transgender Kids BBC2, 21.00 Louis Theroux travels to San Francisco, where a group of pioneering medical professionals are helping children who say they were born in the wrong body to transition from boy to girl or girl to boy at ever-younger ages. At the Child And Adolescent Gender Center at UCSF Hospital Louis meets children who have been diagnosed with gender dysphoria. Louis is told that children as young as three can show signs of rejecting the gender they were assigned at birth, leaving parents with a difficult dilemma - do they start transitioning a child who is still developing their own identity, or do they wait and risk making the change once their body has gone through the transformations of puberty?

Kew On A Plate - Winter BBC2, 19.30
The end of the year at Kew is fast approaching and winter is setting in, but some crops love the cold and Raymond learns how brassicas cope in this frosty season. Kate visits Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank to discover the secret to the survival of our winter greens, while Raymond cooks a nutrient-rich kale dish with sweet and sour pork. At Fishbourne Place, Kate finds out how leeks were considered medicinal in Roman times and Raymond runs into difficulty with his leak crop. The Palm House at Kew holds the UK’s largest collection of bananas, but only one variety, the Cavendish, now vulnerable to extinction, tends to be consumed. Kate visits the University of Leicester where there is a race against time to find a replacement. She also learns how chicory coffee was once a popular British drink while Raymond tries out the chicory grown at Kew in his winter-warming chicory gratin. Travelling to Gressenhall Farm in Norfolk, Kate reveals how the humble turnip changed the course of farming and helped to double Britain’s population. Raymond brings the turnip bang up to date when he makes a variation on tradi- tional sauerkraut - cured and spiced turnip. Domestic historian, Ruth Goodman shows Kate how the once popular Tudor royal treat, quince jellies are made and as Raymond and Kate’s year at Kew draws to an end, the garden is prepared for its next cycle – seeds are saved and soil is mulched. Raymond makes a festive poached quince to celebrate and they reflect on the year at Kew.

00:00 ....... Louis Theroux Two of the UK’s most renowned actors, David Threlfall and John Simm, join forces in new ITV drama Code of a Killer, produced by 01:00..... Back in Time for World Productions. Code of a Killer is based on the extraordinary true Dinner story of Alec Jeffreys’ discovery of DNA fingerprinting and its first use by Detective Chief Superintendent David Baker in catching a double murderer. The drama focuses on how Jeffreys’ science and Baker’s investigative vision created the single biggest leap in the history of criminal investigation. David Threlfall takes the role of David Baker who between 1983 and 1987 headed up the investigation into the brutal murders of two Leicestershire schoolgirls, Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth. Only a few miles away, Dr Alec Jeffreys, played by John Simm, was a scientist at Leicester University who, on 10 September 1984, invented a remarkable technique to read each individual’s unique DNA fingerprint. In 1983, in a small village outside Leicester, 15-year-old Lynda Mann is found by a footpath, raped and strangled to death. A year on, after an exhaustive but fruitless search for the killer, Detective Chief Superintendent David Baker is forced to scale down the investigation. Meanwhile, just a few miles up the road at the University of Leicester, scientist Dr Alec Jeffreys invents a remarkable technique to read DNA – the unique genetic fingerprint of every individual – something never previously achieved despite decades of research across the globe. His discovery is first put to use in an immigration case, proving the parentage of a young Ghanaian boy and preventing his deportation. The acceptance of Jeffreys’ findings in a court of law opens the door to DNA testing and he and his university laboratory are swamped by paternity and immigration cases. Summer 1986, and 15-year-old Dawn Ashworth goes missing – last seen just a hundred yards from where Lynda’s body was discovered. Dawn’s body is found two days later, she has been strangled and hidden in undergrowth near a footpath shortcut. DCS Baker is back on the case – convinced the same culprit has struck again. This time the investigation bears fruit when a young man from the area is seen acting suspiciously at the time of Dawn’s murder, confesses to her killing. However, he refuses to admit he had anything to do with the death of Lynda Mann. Reading about Jeffreys’ work in a local paper, Baker approaches him at the university – perhaps the DNA test can prove the teenagers involvement in Lynda’s death? Jeffreys is hesitant – the DNA sample from the murder scene is nearly three years old, and the technique was not intended or designed for criminal investigation. Furthermore, having only been used in paternity and immigration cases, would the findings be accepted in a criminal court? But Jeffreys is able to obtain a clear genetic fingerprint of the murderer from a sample and it proves that the teenager did not kill Lynda Mann... could the murders have been committed by two different men, or is he innocent?

Lee is 22 and works at his mum’s café in the small town of Guisborough, North Yorkshire. Lee rustles up all day breakfasts and hopes his love of cooking can set him on the path to running his own restaurant one day. However, when his mentor for the next three weeks samples Lee’s cooking, he describes it as ‘a heart attack on a plate’, and worries that Lee has no understanding of food. That mentor is Tom Sellers. At 27, Tom is only five years older than Lee, yet he is Chef Patron at Restaurant Story - a multi-million pound restaurant in the shadow of London’s Tower Bridge. Tom thinks Lee has too much bravado and struggles with authority; and it’s not long before there’s a clash. Lee doesn’t give up though. At the end of three gruelling weeks of intensive training, Lee has impressed Tom and is sent to work at the 11th best restaurant in the world - Mirazur, on the Cote d’Azur.

This World: Britain’s Jihadi Brides
3rd April - 9th April 2015
W ednesday
BBC2, 21.00
Across the UK, families have been have been left devastated by the disappearance of their teenage daughters who have run away to join the so-called Islamic State. Just a few weeks ago CCTV footage of three teenagers from the same school in Bethnal Green sent shock waves through the UK. Many of the families have said they were totally unaware of the radicalisation of their daughters. Britain’s Jihadi Brides reveals how Islamic extremism has become a sprawling and uncontrollable force via the internet. The so-called Islamic State is believed to be operating over 45,000 social media accounts and has its own film unit producing slick propaganda videos aimed at luring people to join. It seems a good family and great education aren’t protection against the techniques used by online radicalisers. The Halane twins from Manchester, with 28 GCSEs between them, left behind all hopes of becoming doctors to marry jihadi fighters, and became teenage widows in Syria within a few months. There is growing evidence that recruiters are actively approaching and targeting young people online. Lea, a French teenager who was stopped by intelligence officers minutes before she was due to be collected by her radicaliser at her school gates, reveals how her radicalisation had taken just a few months. The mother of Grace Dare talks for the first time since her daughter made headlines after tweeting that she wanted to become the first UK woman to kill a UK ‘terrorist’. A studious Christian girl who converted to Islam when she was 18, Grace began calling herself Khadijah. She told her mother she was going away to study, but she has never seen her since. Once in Syria many British girls, including the Halane twins and Lewisham mother Khadijah Dare, seem to have become part of a group of Western women who use extremist propaganda to bolster the recruitment of people to their cause. Meanwhile their families are left struggling with the idea that their daughters have been ‘brainwashed’, with the constant anxiety of wondering what will happen to them in war-torn Syria - and if they will ever return.

Banks learns that missing former undercover policeman, Martin Hexton, was believed by his former boss to have gone rogue. Banks thinks that Hexton beat up a suspect in the Josh Tate murder - Liam Fallon - but Fallon swears he doesn’t know Hexton and didn’t see his assailant. Helen, who is feeling ostracised, does some digging into Sarah Tate’s past and realises that Hexton is actually Josh’s biological father. The team get a lead on Hexton’s mobile and trace him to the Fosters, but they are too late - he has taken Melanie. Melanie collapses and Hexton takes her to the hospital where Helen corners him and has him arrested. She and Banks question him over the beating of Fallon but he admits nothing. He explains that Josh believed Melanie was pregnant with his baby but the team discover she has had an abortion, and Melanie swears it wasn’t Josh’s. They eventually have to let Hexton go. Banks realises that Spencer, Josh’s friend, is the most likely suspect for his murder, yet struggles to pin anything on him due to his protective and clever parents. But when Spencer is released, Hexton abducts him, taking him to the ravine where Josh’s body was found. Arthur galvanises Banks to fight for Annie but is Banks too late.

salary and a virtual job for life. First, however, the prospective drivers must learn how to safely negotiate a ten-ton bus through London’s overcrowded streets. The trainees are filmed from the first moment they sit behind the wheel of a bus through a set of increasingly complex manoeuvres designed to test their abilities to the limit. Those who make it through the early stages then face the toughest assessment of all – their bus driving test, a 90-minute examination. This will determine if the trainees have what it takes to achieve their dreams, and make it as a bus driver. If they pass this ultimate test, then every crash, every stall, and every heart-in-mouth emergency stop over the six weeks has been worth it. This time, Manuel Daniel is three weeks into the course and struggling. He’s failed a series of crucial safety exams and his driving isn’t up to the high standard expected. For Manuel becoming a bus driver will mean the world; he will finally be able to afford to move out of his parents’ house and rent a place of his own, with a room for his bus-loving son. He says: “I’m happy with a second chance, I’m not ashamed. I’m looking forward to doing the test and passing. More pressure now.” Bart Kosciolek’s on a mission to become London’s friendliest bus driver. Originally from Poland, Bart came to the UK eight years ago. He’s tried his hand at being a chef, but is now set on gaining his bus driving qualification. With his infectious giggle, he wants to spread a little happiness to the capital’s seven million daily bus passengers. He says: “Come on, let’s have some fun. A little smile, a little joke is going to help people make their mood for the day.” But instructor Anna Groom is only prepared to go along with Bart’s antics so far. She says: “He’s a very good driver, he just has to remember while he’s busy smiling and laughing he has to concentrate on driving as well.” Newly-married Rodney Willis has given up a job as a used car salesman to drive a double decker. He believes becoming a bus driver will give him the security he craves.

LIFE’S BEEN A BIG ROLLER-COASTER IT’S a funny old time of year because Easter has always been hit and miss when it comes to visitors in the entertainment venues around the Island.
Some benefit from this holiday, while others suffer because of it.
In areas where there are fewer hotels and more holiday-let apartments, the bars seem quiet. Yet the allocation in hotel areas like Fanabe and Torviscas increases because of the family deals offered. Most of us working in the entertainment sector know that during the UK school holidays, airlines hike up their prices to ridiculous
Pick of the week
AN exciting new show is now ready to go. Shiel Campbell and Sam Saxo have teamed up to form a Commitments’ show, featuring all the classic soul tunes featured in the film of the same name. What will make this show special are the dynamics between these top pros. Their tracks have been custom-made to accommodate Sam, with live saxophone, and Shiel’s raw, vocal power to emulate Commitments’ lead singer Andrew Strong. Put that together with Shiel’s ability to engage and involve the audience, and you have a recipe for a fabulous show. Get this one booked quickly because availability will diminish fast. The boys have their first outing at the aptly named First & Last Showbar in Fanabe on Wednesday at 11pm.

Having said that, Easter also marks the beginning of the Tenerife summer, when bars and entertainment managers fine-tune their programme in readiness for the next six months or so. It’s the time of year where we see new acts arriving to give this unique circuit a go, and, also, when some of the veterans change direction and try something new. A lot of acts can stick to the same format for years on end and be really successful. After all, why fix something that isn’t broken. For example; Andy Lynch has worked these shores for almost two decades with his Ronan Keating show. He has become one of the most-loved acts on the Island by his peers - and those regular tourists who visit this
lovely volcanic rock every year. Andy, (above) after all this time treading the boards, has decided to hang up his microphone and completely change direction in his working life. When he made the announcement on Facebook, it was a shock to a lot of us here - and to the fan base he has built up over the years. That quickly turned into a melee of goodluck messages and best wishes for the future. Those who know Andy well will also know that he would not have tak-
TRAMPS’ EASTER EVENTS SPRING is here! The clocks have moved forward, the weather is warming up, and anticipation is growing in Tramps for what is set to be a great summer on the Island.

Tony Bailey - half of the duo Kracker – who has worked with Andy on so many stages here, wrote: “Wow, shocked, one of the very best acts on the circuit, you will be sadly missed my friend.” Robbie Dominic, a veteran of the circuit and radio presenter on Oasis Fm, said: “I remember the very beginning, a true pro, you’ll succeed in what ever you do.” Other comments flooded Andy’s Facebook page from colleagues and tourists, with many similar to that from holiday-maker Stephen Chaplin, who said: “We can’t believe it, we come every year to see you, one of the best acts on the island.” I have worked alongside Andy on many occasions and he never fails to entertain. He
has a gift on stage that engages any audience of any age at any time of year. He is one of those people with no edge or ego, and lots of entertainers here can learn from his work ethic. Andy Lynch is, and always will be, an outstanding entertainer who has provided an amazing contribution to the entertainment scene in Tenerife. His style, personality and talent will be missed, along with that wonderfully-natural smile which is always on display. Andy is not leaving the Island, so I am sure we will see him on stage at some point in the future as he is so popular. And he won’t be able to have a quiet drink in any showbar in Tenerife without comperes and hosts drawing attention to his roller-coaster of a career. Good luck Andy Lynch and family.

Just the Place to relax LA CALETA is one of the jewels in the Tenerife crown. It’s gorgeous all day long and is a great place to enjoy the stunning sunsets we get at this time of year.
There is nothing like a lazy wander around the tiny village on a rare day off, and my wife. Amanda, and I had not been there for absolutely ages. So this week we grabbed the bull by the horns and set off for a relaxing few hours. La Caleta is known for its fish restaurants and boutique restaurants, but there is more to it than that. By chance we came across James Place, a lovely restaurant just by the slipway in the old village. And we were greeted by owner James and his sister, Emma, who are such nice people. We had a choice of sit-
ting inside on the outside terrace or a table on the pavement. We opted for the terrace and noted immediately that the restaurant was very clean and the décor so chic. Our waitress, Julie, introduced herself and made us feel at ease immediately with her pleasant manner, She recommended the grapefruit wine, which left me dubious because I’m not adventurous when it comes to wines a bottle of San Valentin suits me fine. But this wine was superb. Light and crispy ... just perfect! When the menus arrived, I chose the honey and Jack Daniels glazed sausages (sourced locally) and Amanda had the deep-fried camembert with redcurrant jelly. I have to say that the sauce which came with sausages was very moreish, and the sausages themselves, with just a hint of spice, were fantastic. The camembert was creamy and de-
licious and we both finished our starters with big smiles, anticipating the main course. I had a quick chat with James and Emma who originate from Hertfordshire. They have been here over 11 years and, before opening the current restaurant about three years ago, James owned a bar on The Patch. James has also opened up a separate locale
next door, which doubles as a games room and small, intimate bar, which looked fantastic.
And, now that summer is over, they are now offering Sunday dinners, with a choice of two meats and fresh veg, plus all the trimmings, between 1-6pm. Our main courses were served by Julie, and I went for the battered cod and mushy peas. My wife had the sirloin steak with home-made mushroom sauce and small, roast potatoes and a huge selection of freshly-cooked veg. Now, Amanda is fussy about her steak. She asked for it just pink inside, and she was not disappointed because it was cooked to perfection. My battered cod and chips dish was excellent, with tartar sauce on the side. And I had to help out my wife with her veg when I had finished because the portions were extremely generous. As we sat there, the sunset glowed on whitewashed houses and we could not believe how tranquil the village of La
Caleta was. My wife felt as though she had left Tenerife and had been wafted off on holiday to somewhere in her dreams. Julie then brought over the dessert board and, though we were both full to bursting, we could not resist sharing the home-made carrot cake (James’ Mum made it). The word divine is bandied around too often but the carrot cake, with plenty of frosting, was just that! James Place is also a super bar to enjoy a drink or two and, if you’re the sporty type, relax and watch all the major events in games room. The restaurant is open seven days a week from 10am, serving a traditional English breakfast and a tasty lunch menu. And, as their tag line says ...We just haven’t met you yet! For reservations or more details, call 667 824 518 or e-mail james lacaleta@hotmail.com
Garmendia 2007, a headache-free red!
THIS week’s wine is something special. But first, a little biological lesson. Some mornings, you can wake up with a bit of a headache after enjoying a few glasses or bottles the night before. And that is down to the sulfite in the vino. This is present in all wines, and this ingredient prevents wine from turning vinegar. There are industrystandard levels when it comes to sulfite. In organic wines, it is limited to 100mg per litre for red wines and 120mg per litre for white and rosé wines. This is 33% to 40% less than the thresholds for conventional wines. During alcoholic fermentation, yeasts transform grapes into wine, which contains lots of compounds. It is in these compounds that makes the difference between conventional wine, organic
and biodynamic wine. This is all to do with the sulfites. The higher the sulfite level the greater the chance of that hangover. In organic wines, no sorbic acid, anti-oxidants or stabilisers are allowed to be added to the wine, but these can be present naturally. I mention this as our featured wine this week is organic and will leave you hangover-free! The Garmendia Bio 2007 is fermented in stainless-steel and oak barrels. The ageing in French and American oak barrels lasts 16 months. Then the wine is aged in the bottle for an extra year. The harvest is made in small boxes to avoid damaging the grapes and, of course,
is picked by hand. Bodegas Garmendia, which b e l o n g s to Grupo Altube, was established in 1991 when Patxi Garmendia acquired Rosalia estate in the town of Burgos Vizmalo. There, he discovered an old cellar of 17th century origin and he started to research the winemaking tradition of that land. The vineyards of Garmendia, who share the estate with other cereal crops, herbs and olive trees, are recognised as an official organic production site by a certificate from the Organic Farming Council of Castile and Leon (CAECyL).
After many years of organic farming being a niche, it is now in the agriculture mainstream. The owner respects the land and its products. One example is the use in this farm of organic manures and natural techniques to treat land, and natural clarifying agents - egg whites - to cleanse impurities on the vines. The Garmendia 2007 has received numerous awards, including Gold Medal Mundis vini 2012; Silver Medal - Millésime Bio 2011 (France); Gold Medal - BIOFACH 2011 (Germany); Silver Medal - Wine Master Challenge 2009, and the Golden Ecoracimo. And it gained a magnificent 90 points in the Penin Guide 2012. This wine, with a production of 95,000 bottles, needs to be served between 16º and 18ºC and will
then deliver intense aromas of red fruit (cherry), assembled with notes of vanilla, coconut and licorice on the nose, and your palate will enjoy a good balance of sweet sensations of vanilla, red fruit and licorice. The grape varieties
are Tempranillo and Garnacha. Come and try this wine in our facilities at Las Chafiras Prestigio y Tradición Calle Arujo, 2, Monday to Friday 9.30am to 6pm, and Saturday from 10am-2pm. Or call us on 922 703 419.

A taste of the Sahara... and stunning resorts
Wear your hair long, but make certain it suits
By Vanessa Vee
By Carl from Robot
THIS week we nipped over to Gran Canaria, one of our neighbouring Canary Islands, which has quite a different climate from our beautiful Tenerife, with its Sahara-like sand dunes.
IF you going to wear your hair long, there are one or two golden rules to follow if you want it to look its best.
However, it is relatively similar when we look at the volcanic craters and snow-tipped peaks. Just as in Tenerife, it has various resorts, all offering something a little different. So if you like to surf, swim in tranquil waters or just relax on the beach, Gran Canaria has a wide variety of beaches and beautiful coastlines to complement your holiday. And whether you are with your loved one, in a group of friends or on a family holiday, you are sure to find what you’re looking for to make your holiday experience memorable and exciting - not to mention relaxing. The South has some stunning resorts, packed with entertainment and cabaret bars, restaurants, cafes, shops and nightlife, guaranteed to give you that holiday feeling. Features include the fantastic new resort of Meloneras, together with Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas, Mogan plus many more, and of course, lots of sunshine. Meloneras really has that WOW factor. The whole area has been refurbished and finished with style and sophistication - a classy place I would liken to our own Del Duque. You can walk along the promenade and shop ‘til you drop in high-end designer stores like Lacoste and Ralph Lauren, before sampling cuisine from a whole host of restaurants, including Italian, traditional tapas, sushi and seafood. Dip a toe in the warm waters at Playa del In-
gles and top up your tan on the beach there. Again, it’s full of excellent eateries and is a great place to recharge your batteries. By night, Playa del Ingles really comes alive. If you like music and dancing, then this is the place to be! The sand dunes of Maspalomas are a sight to behold, stretching out along the South coast like giant waves of sand, covering some four square kilometres. Picturesque Puerto de Mogan is a popular destination and, admittedly, to where I have returned on more than one occasion. It seems to have all that I want and need, with superb hotels, beaches and entertainment. And its quaintness has also led it to be known, alternatively, as Little Venice. But let’s not forget the vibrant capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria - a city crammed with culture and history. This truly is a cosmopolitan city in the North East of the island with so much to do and see: museums, art collections, fantastic architecture, beautiful parks, super shops, cafes and the famous Las Canteras beach - perfect for a cooling dip, or a spot of sun-bathing. This fascinating island has something for everyone. Whatever your taste or age, you will
find the perfect location to spend your precious time, and enjoy a huge variety of things to do to transform your trip into a highly-memorable one. Direct flights or ferries are available from Tenerife, flights taking just 45 minutes, or an hour on the ferry from Santa Cruz. A wide selection of accommodation is on offer, from camp sites, to self-catering apartments, to 5-star select hotels. And don’t forget, discounts on travel and hotels are available for those who hold a Canarian residencia. Gran Canaria, for Tenerife residents, is the perfect getaway ... not too far away, yet just far enough to treat it as a holiday. Tenerife Sunshine Travel have a super long-weekend offer available in Gran Canaria next month from just 120 euros per person, and this includes car and return fast-ferry with 3-star self-catering accommodation. Other dates, durations, board basis and star ratings are available on request. Please call the Tenerife Sunshine Travel Team on 922 751 867, (open 7 days a week). Longer hair can look good, but only if it’s doing something for you - if it looks healthy and it’s in some sort of style. There’s nothing worse than having longer hair just for the sake of it … yards of it hanging down your back, pulling you and your face down. If, from behind, you look twentysomething because of your flowing locks, but from the front you could startle small animals, then maybe longer hair isn’t for you. I’m not into putting everyone into categories, but long hair on a fiftysomething is rarely a good image. If you are in your thirties or forties, then with modifications you can get away with it, but only if the length warrants being there. Tying it up all day defies the object of having it. What a waste! Yet I see this all the time here in Tenerife. Just modifying the length and the layers can make such a difference, flattering you more and lifting your profile. I know that some of you out there loathe having your longer tresses cut. But if you have a good head of hair, why not make the very best of it?
Take it from me, longer, grey hair looks so ageing on anyone. I see mature women with good faces still dressing well … but long grey hair? It just doesn’t go. I’m not saying you should all have short hair, but there’s an inbetween - a more eyepleasing look that is so much more attractive. But if you are going to maintain your hair this length, then please keep up with regular cuts.
Don’t think, as some do, that longer hair doesn’t need cutting as much. This length can be four, five or even six years old, and just consider what it has gone through in all that time. You should be applying treatments at least once a week to maintain the condition of your hair, making sure you remove all knots before washing - and always use a flexible brush to prevent breakage. Also, never rub dry with a towel as this, too, will cause damage. All in all, try to be considerate to your longer hair. It really has been through a lot to get to the length you want.

By Monica Dyson ONE of my ambitions which I don’t think will ever be realised is to become an Agony Aunt. I like to think I could succeed because I’ve had experience at the University of Life.
But really, it’s probably because I’m basically a very nosy person. Nevertheless, sorting out the affairs of the heart of “Lovesick from As Americas” or “Concerned of Callao Salvage” does seem quite an interesting occupation. Throughout history, Agony Aunts, or lonelyhearts’ columnists, have advised people who obviously wanted their private problems keeping anonymous. There are still some “problem pages” in magazines and newspapers, among them, one in The Guardian featuring Ann Widdecombe, which I tend to be a bit sceptical about, and the Sun’s “Dear Deidre”, in which journalist Deidre Sanders, originally a Sheffield University
3rd April - 9th April 2015
It’s Agony, being nosy
graduate, has advised on matters of the heart for over 30 years. However, when I dipped into it, it seemed a bit risqué. You can still find the odd pages around purely for finding dating partners, but not nearly as many as there used to be. Of course, that is because of the ease with which someone looking for love or whatever can find it on the Internet! One around in print is The Guardian Soulmates’ page in which, since 2004, you have been able to look for someone compatible with yourself. At least it limits the likelihood of finding anyone belonging to the EDF, or having to explain that Marcel Proust was not a racing driver. And there’s the “Yours” magazine, in which you can look for love while perusing the knitting patterns - or recipes for spotted dick! Finding a partner on the Internet is something people are doing in droves, and it appears that on-line dating is growing faster among the over-50s, and way beyond, more quickly than any other age
group. There are Internet dating sites for the over-60s because, if you are retired, widowed or divorced, the likelihood of finding romance via traditional methods becomes increasingly unlikely the older you get. You’re unlikely to go clubbing, or into pubs on your own, and you won’t find someone at work, because you no longer work. Yet there are literally hundreds in the same boat on-line. The on-line dating business is worth £170m, with over nine million people logging on. A friend on becoming widowed a year or so ago - with indecent haste, some might think - subscribed to sites called things like “Game, set and match. com” or “Plenty of goldfish in the bowl.com” She was like the Duracell Bunny, dashing around between dates.
Suddenly, life became full of excitement for her. However, it seems that there certainly are pitfalls to avoid. It’s often unlikely that people give a true picture of themselves. In fact, the actual picture they insert on the site may well be 30 years old! Women tend to be more honest in describing themselves. Men will always be charming, sporty, generous, funny and sensual. They may sometimes say that they are “carrying a few extra pounds” when they are actually clinically obese! And more often than not, they are looking for a woman who is slim, elegant, attractive, solvent and younger! Well, she’s looking for George Clooney! Professional advice on inserting on-line adverts is to make it clear that you are simply looking for companionship. And if you arrange a date,
make it for lunchtime so that you can plead another engagement if your chosen one turns out to be quite dreadful, spending all the time talking about his or her past baggage and what wrongs their previous partner performed! Your arthritis usually prevents you from escaping through the toilet window as you might have done if younger! Personal ads in newspapers are nothing new, and it’s thought that the first one was a matrimonial advertisement appearing in a British publication in 1695. From then on, they were mostly from men seeking a wife, with an emphasis on looks and money. During Victorian times, the adverts had to sound respectable and they were even used by the upper-crust of European society by men who had passed
their prime but desired heirs. During the Sixties, the wording of advertisements started to change with the “free love” movement. People were looking for dates and flings, and not necessarily marriage. Gay men advertised for partners, using ambiguously-worded phrases like “extremely masculine” in a time when they could have been breaking the law. Today, dating and match-making services are on the Internet for virtually any category. It’s a lucrative industry, and there are many people who have found love and happiness, with an end to loneliness. However, like anything today, there are totally unscrupulous people out there and you could be taken for a real ride. Not to the altar, though. More like the cash-point!

A special Army accolade
REFUGE staff are always careful in choosing people, or trying to find the best new homes, for the stray dogs brought in by the police and Town Halls of Arona, Granadilla and Guía de Isora.
More than 6,000 dogs have already been rehomed since we have been open, but sometimes it is difficult to find responsible homes for big dogs like Staffordshires, Pit Bulls or Rottweilers, mainly because dangerous licences are required by law. And these dogs need special owners who can handle and educate them correctly. We had an important visit to the refuge last Tuesday when Colonel Felipe Ocaña Berjoyo came with the Army vet and other members from the Santa Cruz military to see the shelter.
They surprised us all by presenting a special award for the good work we do, and to thank us . They have recruited several of our large dogs, when it would have been so easy for
them to buy guard dogs instead. But they wanted to help our cause in some way… and found the best guard dogs at our refuge! We believe it is also a good example that the authorities want to
take care of dogs who have been left on the Tenerife streets. They have excellent kennels at the military base, with constant vet care, big areas in which to run around and lots of trained staff

By Val Sainsbury MILLIONS of people are at risk of developing diabetes because doctors are said to be prescribing antibiotics needlessly.
Live Arico Shops All is going well at our new charity shop on the Golf, and our vet Cesar Bertoldi is with us every Wednesday morning from 10-noon, offering advice on all aspects of your pet’s healthcare. Come and have a chat with him. We are situated at Golf Park, on the loop road round, before the lot-
tery kiosk, and are open between 10am-4pm, Monday to Saturday. We also have shops in Los Cristianos, Calle Revron near Churchills Bar, and San Eugenio opposite Hotel La Nina by Amandas bar at las Carabelas complex. Both shops open between 10am4pm, Monday to Friday, and until 3pm Saturdays and Sundays.
Those taking the pills for common infections are in greater danger of developing the condition, says a new study. Experts believe that just two courses of the drugs, including penicillin, could alter bacteria in the stomach dramatically. And they warn that antibiotics are prescribed too often for minor illnesses. Scientists studied the number of prescriptions given to 200,000 patients
to look after them. It has been a big honour for our sanctuary staff to receive such an award, and to give a few dogs a special new life. Donations welcome Please note that Ac-
cion del Sol does not charge for adoptions, and every animal is fully passported , microchipped, inoculated, sterilised and has a full bill of health before leaving the refuge. But donations towards the day-to-day running of the refuge are much appreciated Can you help? Please call 922 778 630 for more information, or if you would like to help out in any way. Maybe you have some spare time and would like to walk some of the many dogs at the refuge. They would really appreciate it! Where to find us The refuge is situated at Granadilla’s Industrial Estate, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to ITER, the ecological park which houses the windmills. Opening hours We are open to the public on Mondays, Tu e s d a y s , T h u r s d a y s and Fridays between 2-5pm, and on Saturdays from 1pm to 4pm. The refuge is closed Wednesdays, Sundays and on Public Holidays.
A deadly diabetes danger... in Britain at least a year before they were diagnosed with diabetes. They then compared this to the number given to 800,000 non-diabetics of the same age and sex. The researchers found that those prescribed at least two courses were at higher risk of being diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes. After two to five courses of penicillin, the risk rose by 8%, and it rose by 23% after five courses. For quinolones, another type of antibiotic, the diabetes risk went up by 15% for those prescribed two to five courses and by 37% for those on five. The University of
Pennsylvania study was published in the European Journal of Endocrinology. Dr Ben Boursi, who led the study, said: “Our findings are important, not only for understanding how diabetes may develop, but as a warning to reduce unnecessary, antibiotic treatments.” Dr Richard Elliot, of Diabetes UK, said other risk-factors such as obesity could not be ruled out in the study, adding: “The best way to prevent the condition is to maintain a healthy weight by eating a balanced diet, and by taking regular physical activity.”

By Sue McDonald WE seem to be back in the time of year when people are ordering sofas made to measure, maybe because they are expecting guests in the Summer,.
And one size does not fit all! The sofa is one of the most important pieces of house furniture, so it is important to get it right! Firstly, you will enjoy time relaxing on your sofa but, increasingly, people spend more time in the lounge area than ever before. This is because our lifestyles have changed. Now, many people eat and mix with friends in this area, too, rather than in more formal settings. Of course, with the advent of the laptop, it is also likely that people will be working or playing here, too, instead of disappearing into the back bedroom to use the computer (although I am sure there are still those who need that privacy!). I meant for peace and quiet ... what were you thinking? In addition, sofa beds are much more common here in Tenerife than they are in the UK. This is because, if you rent out your property, you can increase the occupancy and, therefore, your income. If you live here, you will no doubt have a many friends from back home who would just love

to come and visit. The good thing about sofa beds nowadays is that they have improved so much that their comfort as a sofa is not compromised because of the bed. And the beds, now supplied with comfortable foam mattresses, are also extremely comfortable. It´s not obvious that they are beds either, so if needs be, you can fib and say you don’t have room for unwanted guests! A lot of new properties have less usable space than was previously the case, or perhaps the sofa needs to fit into a particular part of the room. This is where having a tailor-made sofa comes into its´ own, apart from the obvious advantage that you can choose whatever material type, colour and pattern you want. Apart from the bed mechanism, which is of a fixed size, everything else can be altered to suit: for example, wider or thinner arms, with a chaise or a corner unit, to fit in with your taste, needs and space avail-
able. We have recently quoted for two small sofas with special measurements for someone who has limited mobility, thus increasing the height of the seat and shape of the arms etc. And because of the excellent relations built with local and national suppliers, this can be achieved without any problem. In addition, everyone has his/her own personal preferences for comfort. For example, we receive a lot of requests for high-backed sofas, rather than the lower, modern styles, which look amazing but can be actually not so great in practice to sit on. It depends whether you want to spend more time looking at your sofa, or actually sitting on it! Any minor changes to design and/or size do not incur extra expense, and production time is about two weeks in the material of your choice. All the above mentioned products are available from Deco Nuevo.
I’m talking “heels” normally, the higher the better, the slimmer the better and the more expensive, the better. Yet what is it that drives women to distraction as they pass a shoe shop? Most would rather buy new heels than pay the electric bill, smuggling them into their wardrobes to avoid the hubby’s glare. Why do women feel compelled to be put through this uncomfortable form of footwear? Well, you ask any women to get dressed up and not put heels on. She’d rather not go out; she’d rather not put on make-up! Heels, whether we like it or not, are here to stay - from the cheap throwaways you buy on a whim to those “the price of a small car” that you girls crave. Women tell me they don’t feel “dressed” unless they are pushed skyward on the two pieces of stick we call “high heels”. There’s no better feeling, they say, than getting ready to go out and then, at the last moment, throw on those shoes that not only make you feel more feminine but also do wonders for any leg shape. So what’s been tripping of the catwalks this season to make you ladies get all hot and bothered over a simple shoe? To tie in with this season’s hottest trends, here’s a few of my favourites that would transform any simple outfit from drab to fab in seconds. The most classic of all, when you conjure up high-heels, nearly always have to be red.
These Jimmy Choo classics are elegant, yet bang-on trend with there chunky-toe detail. It’s a fabulous colour to tie in with this season’s beiges and khakis, and to bring the “wow” factor to any black night-time outfit. They’re not for the faint-hearted, but these heels really pack a punch. On the other foot, so to speak, there’s nothing like a classy mule stiletto in a goldmuted tone to go with just about any colour or outfit, any skirt length or even trousers. These gold mules, by Gucci, are timeless. Their snakeskin effect will always be at the fashion front and, no matter whether you tie them up with a gold bag or mix it up with colour, gold never fails to look stunning. Everyone needs a pair of black heels as a basis for any shoe wardrobe. These Louboutin stunners (above) are a classic buy, yet are
right on the mark with the little flash of colour on the heel. Again, they are heavier on the front but still elegant enough to complement any outfit. So next time you ladies are on a shoefinding expedition, try to think outside the box and go for something a little more daring. Any basic outfit can be made that little more exciting by adding an amazing pair of shoes. They don’t even have to be that expensive, just as long as they look it. Don’t be tempted by cheap throw away heels. You will only regret it as you’re carrying them up the road once the straps or heel has broken off. Shoes are always something you can never have enough of. If you have money for an outfit or shoes, go for the latter every time. They’re the one item which can make your little number stand out from the crowd.

Motoring
By Emma at Motorworld
WHEN considering buying a car, be it new, secondhand or merely an upgrade to your current model, there are many things to consider.
Firstly. decide on your budget and have a contingency plan in case the car you fall in love with is a little more expensive than you’d planned to spend. Once you have set your budget, factor in any potential transfer costs, although a lot of cars sold include this in the price or it can be negotiated if you are a serious buyer – and, of course, insurance costs. The cost of both new and second-hand cars vary from make to make. and from UK prices. In general, new cars here tend to be sometimes a little cheaper than in the
3rd April - 9th April 2015
New car must fit the bill UK. But second-hand cars hold their value and are more expensive than the same thing you can buy in the UK. Part of the reason is that we are on a small island and there are substantially fewer cars than, for example, on the mainland. Both transfer costs and insurance differ from Britain, where to change ownership is fairly straightforward and involves just filling out a form and sending it off to Swansea DVLA. Here, the cost of transferring a car can be substantial, depending on the make, model and engine size, as well as age and the official valuation. Also, the sale cannot be completed unless the purchaser has an NIE number/and or a Residencia, an in-date passport and proof of address, such as a Certificate of Empadronamiento or Registered Escritura. Once you know how much you have to spend, decide on the size you want - 2, 4, 5, 7 or 9-seater - and whether you want manual or automatic
transmission, as this will affect the type of vehicle you can get. It is not such a good idea here to set your sights on a specific make and model because, often, they are just not available. A woman will tend to choose a car by size and colour, say a white Seat Ibiza, whereas a man will consider more options, like engine size, fuel consumption and lastly (usually), size. Women tend to prefer a smaller model, probably because it’s easier to find a parking space on all their shopping trips! You should always ask to test drive the vehicle, and we would not recommend buying a car
without first driving it. When buying a new car, there are often demonstration models to test drive which, until quite recently, were not available, so you were literally buying a car blind, because you couldn’t feel how it drove, or felt to you, the driver. Magazines and brochures will always point out a car’s good points but not its potential pitfalls, if any. By driving one, you will find this out for yourself. Always, when buying second-hand, ask when the cam belt was last changed because if this has not been done, it
should be replaced as a matter of priority (dependant on the age and mileage of the vehicle). By test-driving a car, you will get a feel of how it suits your needs, even though you may be a little nervous at the time. People often start looking for a small or compact car and end up with something completely different, simply because they had a test drive in something they had not previously considered. When buying a car, insurance costs will play a part, but they vary sometimes from UK costs. Here, it is the car and not the person who is insured so, dependent on
your policy, it will mean that in the event of you becoming ill when out, or perhaps have a little too much to drink, another driver (within the specified age limits and criteria) can safely drive your car home. The big pile of apples contains the same amount of large apples of a quarter of a euro each (from Mrs. Jones), as smaller apples of one sixth euro each (from Mrs. Smith). The average price is therefore (1/4 + 1/6) / 2 = 5/24 euro. However, apples are sold for 1/5 euro each (5 apples for 1 euro). This means that per sold apple there is a shortage of 5/24 - 1/5 = 1/120 euro. The total shortage is 3.50 euro, so the women together started out with 420 apples. These are worth 1/5 × 420 = 84 euro, or with equal division 42 euro for each. If Mrs. Jones had sold her 210 apples herself, she would have received 52.50 euro. Conclusion: Mrs. Jones loses 10.50 euro in this deal.

So near, yet so far! Barcelona B 2 CD Tenerife 2
By Roscoe THE bandwagon rolls on under new manager Raul Agne with another perfectlyacceptable away point.
The draw with Barca’s kids made it seven unbeaten and four without defeat on the road for Tenerife. Most football managers would take four points from every two matches. It’s promotion form. That said, Tenerife should have returned home with three points. In the ultimate game of two halves, the hosts shot themselves in the foot when 2-1 up, thanks to a moment of madness from Dongou. The kid has talent, and his third-minute goal had given Barca the perfect start. He is highly-rated and every time I’ve seen him, he has really caught the eye. By all accounts Dongou is quiet off the park, which makes his desperate, late, pointless lunge on Vitolo all the more bizarre. Francisco Arias had no choice but to show the 19-year-old a straight red. Patric’s penalty had given Barca a second advantage after Diego Ifran had earlier equalised, but the sendingoff changed everything. Agne hooked Cristo Diaz for the more attack-minded Juan Carlos Real and Tenerife dominated without really going through the gears. Cheered on by a large travelling support, many from Armada Sur, Tenerife attacked at will. In the second half they had eight shots on target, seven off target, and tickled the woodwork a few times. Man of the moment Maxi Perez bundled in the equaliser on the hour mark and even though it was one-way traffic, a real clear-cut chance never really presented itself. It was all half-chances, soft
crosses and, at times, a touch too much. Spanish football is littered with teams who try to walk the ball into the net. But the Barca kids defended bravely, and Edgar Le was outstanding at centre-half. Usual kingpin Bagnick was missing through suspension, but his partner more than stepped up. Le was everywhere, ably assisted by Alex Grimaldo. And then there was young cat Jose Suarez. He made his B team debut only at the end of January, yet played like a veteran. He pulled off three or four high-class saves, and his injury-time stop from Juan Carlos’ bullet was the best of the lot. He is not the tallest, and maybe the 19-year-old keeper will add an inch or two. But Suarez has the tools. His positioning was spot-on and he has strong wrists. This Barca B squad is rather average, but the aforementioned players, along with speedball attacker Adamu, should all find good careers somewhere. After the match, a pal of mine called me up and said: “that’s the best I’ve seen Tener-
ife play in a long, long time.” He was right, but the fact that they couldn’t see the job off was disappointing. And the players agreed. Maxi said: “It was a disappointing start but, luckily, we kept going. We were doing the important things and then we were dominant. “Hopefully, we will continue this way. We wanted to win to break that streak of away draws with victory but, hey, that happens in football.” Juan Carlos added: “We had chances! Credit the keeper and we leave with good feelings. We continue that streak of not losing and we had a real opportunity to achieve two wins in a row but, hey, we continue to grow strong. “We are working well and it was a shame not to win after everything we created in the second half.” When he took the job, Raul Agne promised to play more attacking football, and he has certainly delivered. And with another double from the Uruguay boys, he is making big strides with the team. But he is keeping his
feet on the ground. “It was a poor start and Barca played well for the first half-hour,” he said. “We found a way back into the match, and at half-time I thought we needed more bite and flair in midfield. It was a good goal from Maxi and I really thought we would go on and win from there. Position
“I thought in the second half we were very balanced in midfield, and that made us dominate. We were very good with possession, but we need to learn to be a bit more creative and composed. Now we face tough opponents in Zaragoza.” And, as we complete 31 matches, Tenerife are stuck in a bit of Points
PLD
Won
no-man’s-land. With 11 games to go, CDT are a healthy eight points clear of the drop-zone but 10 away from the play-offs. Encouragingly Cordoba, the 16th-place side in this division after 31 matches last season, went up! The run they went on was remarkable and is asking a bit too much of this Tenerife side. Or is it? We will get a better understanding of the task after the visit of Real Zaragoza, who sit in that last play off place. They are, of course, a big fish in this pond, despite their crippling money problems. There is still a chance they will not make the end of the season, such is their dire straits. And they are wobbling a bit on the field. They were bang in form in January, but have won only one of their last seven. Tenerife produced a rare away win when these sides met in early November and I’ve a feeling this will be another open contest. You don’t get many five-goal thrillers in Santa Cruz, but a repeat of that 3-2 win would certainly stir hopes of a late play-off charge. Draw Lost

Waterfall cascade on Phoenix! ONE definition of the word “cascade” is something that falls or hangs in copious quantities. And last Friday’s John Lowe handicap trophy final at Bar 180 saw copious amounts of ale consumed, leaving a few people hanging on Saturday morning! Either way, a cracking night was had by all, with plenty of banter from the Waterfall and Phoenix lads, who played out a tight match in the best possible spirit. A 270-point head start for Waterfall looked to be a tough task for the Phoenix, but they rose to the challenge in the first game as Mitch got the better of Sheepy. Skipper Dave then levelled the match, despite a brilliant 130 check-out on the bull from young Jonnhy.
This spurred on the Waterfall gang to take the next two rubbers, with Kelvin beating Steve, and Frank punishing London’s missed doubles. The Phoenix then struck back with Bubbles winning the last singles against Tom, then London and Jon-

nhy taking the first doubles to set up a tantalising seventh and deciding game. You could hear a pin drop as Dave and Kelvin faced Mitch and Bubbles, and with the bar now full of supporters from both teams, it was game on! It was all about hold-
ing your nerve, but try as they might, the Phoenix pair could not close that gap and the Waterfall lads and the rest of the onlookers erupted as Kelvin hit the winning double. A superb match played in the correct manner ... that’s what the Oasis Fm Darts
League is all about. Over in Los Abrigos, the plate final was being played out in the Phoenix bar, with Division 2 side The Rebels, holding a 360-point advantage over Premier League winners Bar 180 A. That’s an awful lot to catch up, and many
people were tipping The Rebels for victory. However, the 180 lads were in no mood for negativity and won the first three points. Tom beat Babs, Andy notched against Barb, and Martin, amazingly, beat Rudy despite being 600 points behind in the first leg! Doubles for dough? The Rebels then began to make a go of it as they took the last two singles, Walter taking out Richard and Ann beating Wayne. But that was that for the Rebels, Andy and Wayne claimed the first doubles game, and the cup for a delighted Bar 180 A. Final, who triumphed 5-2. Congratulations to all four teams involved in the finals. Some shiny silverware will be heading your way on presentation night!

Cream rises to the top WE are now down to the nitty-gritty, and there are no more international breaks, so it’s all systems go! Gordon Wilson’s Coffee Shop Karma top the Oasis Fm Fantasy League, but 18 points is nothing in this format. He is duking it out with Nicky Abbott who has been up there all season. Another Wilson – War-
ren - is in the mix, as is Ray Malone. It should be between these four, but you never really know in fantasy football. Fifth-placed Dan Lawton has an unbalanced squad, which could cost him, while Frank Devaney, in sixth spot, will be hoping his big-hitters do the business. And here is the problem. With so many sides
having a similar makeup, the only way to really make up ground is to roll the dice and find different players. But the top-scorers are exactly that. Who will be brave enough to say: “Harry Kane is now a marked man and will score small, so let’s buy Idaye from West Brom?” It’s these little changes, coupled with the cap-
tain’s armband, which will make all the difference. A prime example of this is old boy Steve Snook’s Kingsmead Krunchers. His defence includes Hector Bellerin, Alex Bruce and Craig Dawson, but that will not win you this league. And as for Yun SukYoung ... well, that just sends out a different message!

Champions back on top IT has been a while, but we have a new leader of Division One in the Direct Telecom pool league as Tenerife Hammers A move into top spot.
They played a local derby against Tenerife Hammers C and never looked troubled on what was a straightforward night on the pool table. Hammers A are a difficult team to play against and, once in their stride, Tenerife Hammers C had no response, despite Heineken (aka Mr Iscariot) nicking the first frame. The 10-2 win means that Hammers A now lead the way by a point over Gaffers A, who weren’t in action this week and have two games in hand over their rivals. But until the points are on the board, nothing can be taken for granted. Inn The Pink A are still looking good for a third-place finish, but they were made to work hard for their win against The Peacocks. Pink are renowned for their fast starts and were soon 4-1 up, but Peacocks fought back and, going into the final frames were 5-3 down. Craig took a good scalp in beating John to make it 5-4, and all of a sudden there was a comeback on. But Rick and Graham stood firm and
Pink reached the seven frames required for a win with one to spare. Palms Bar A also had aspirations of a topthree finish as they faced close rivals Treehouse A, knowing they could leapfrog them with a win. It was a closelyfought battle, and Palms certainly had their chances - but in this division you have to take them! The 7-5 scoreline for the visitors showed how tight the match was. Exiles B, back in action after a week off, welcomed Phoenix Potters to Silencio. But the rest appeared to leave them a little rusty and they struggled around the table. The same can’t be said of the Potters, who produced some excellent pool and were worthy winners. In a mid-table clash, Terrace Bar B were looking to move up on Dreamers A as they faced off on Amarilla Golf. Early-season form seems to have really dipped for the home team as again, they let frames slip away. Dreamers, in resilient mood, were determined to leave with nothing less than three points. They eventually got their noses in front and saw the game out. Terrace Bar A didn’t fare any better as they took on Waterfall Rebels. Things didn’t start well with Terrace captain Adi rattling a fairly straightforward black. They had a slice of luck in the next frame as Adie, for the Rebels, went in-off the black. After eight

Mal and then Sparky picked up frames to leave it 6-5 going into the last frame and this is where it gets confusing. The Rebels’ Adie took on Adi from the Terrace. But Adi, having a poor night at the table after that firstframe miss on the black, couldn’t get into it as Adie seven-balled him to take the points for the home team. As we enter the final straight in Division Two, it will be all about the games in hand in the push for promotion. Sporting Jester A are Champions-elect and, at present, Bluebell A are second. But there are three teams behind them all with three games in hand and, should any of those teams take maximum points from those games, they will move above Bluebell. Sporting Jester A again showed their dominance of this league with an 11-1 victory at Picasso’s A, to make it 18 wins two draws from 20 games. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went through the season
unbeaten, and they are certainly going to ruffle a few feathers next season in Division One. Bluebell A are doing what they need to do to remain in second spot as they travelled around the corner to Dreamers B, who are towards the bottom of the table. However it was no walkover for Bluebell as their hosts put up a great fight and looked comfortable trading frames. However Bluebell are tough opposition and managed to drag themselves across the line for the win. Inn The Pink B, one of the chasing teams, had an opportunity to close the gap with an away game against Next Door. Craig and the Next Door lads, licking their wounds after a mauling last week, were determined not to suffer the same fate. Try as they might, Inn The Pink just could not get their noses in front and, finally, had to settle for a point. Gaffers B fared better, though, as they went to Chayofa for a clash with Treehouse B. Despite the home side taking a couple of early frames, Gaffers B

Division 1 Waterfall Rebels v The Peacocks Division 2 James Place v Sporting Jester A Picasso’s v Treehouse B The Crown v Sporting Jester B were always in control and comfortably went through the gears for a straightforward victory. James Place, still in with an outside chance of the top three, were in fine form against Tenerife Pool Tables, who were still buzzing after last week’s superb win. However they couldn’t replicate that form and before they knew it, James Place had the game won by taking the first seven frames. TPT eventually won their first frame after young Harley defeated Steve, but I’m sure Ste-
ve will say he had taken his foot off the gas at that point. But there is no escaping the fact that he lost to a kid! A couple more games were surrendered, but James Place were good for their win. Sporting Jester B unable to emulate their A team’s form this season, still managed a fine victory on Tuesday night against Hoppy’s Bar. It was another of those matches that could have gone either way as the two team’s swapped frames. But the Jesters made home advantage count to record their seventh win of the season.

Harry Kane and able! By Adi Benson
AFTER another round of international fixtures, most players seem to have come through unscathed - and one or two with enhanced reputations, I’m looking at you Harry Kane. We have now entered the final furlong with just eight games left, and it is still close at the top and bottom, so there is still time for late drama!
Burnley v Tottenham I think Burnley can still stay up because their final push suggests they can pick up more points than Sunderland - and at least one here would be a good start. They have been strong at home and always give the opposition a good game. Defence will be key, and they need to keep it tight. If they can, then Spurs can be beaten on the counter-attack. Harry Kane will have returned to Spurs full of even more confidence after that England goal in his first senior appearance. But Burnley could bring him back down to earth with a bump. Spurs have been hit-and-miss against lower teams, and this could be another one of their frustrating afternoons. Prediction: Draw
Arsenal v Liverpool This is a big game for Arsenal as they find themselves just a point behind second-placed Man City, But they are not known for their strong finish because at this time of the year, their injury list is normally long. What they have got this time around, though, is strength in depth and, if they can keep the results going, they may finish runners-up. Liverpool have dropped off the pace after losing against Man Utd and are now five points off fourth spot. With Gerrard and Skrtel banned for three games, and Sturridge likely to be missing through injury for a month, you can’t see them putting in a late charge. Prediction: Home win
Leicester v West Ham Every time I talk about Leicester, it is a must-win game for them, but it is just not happening - and it is looking more and more likely that they are going down. They have put in some battling performances of late, and have gone close on a couple of occasions. But a lack of goals is costing them, and transfer gambles have not paid off. West Ham look set for a top-10 finish, just! But in the eyes of their fans, is it good enough when in December they were sitting in fourth spot and dreaming of European football? With Allardyce not yet signing a new contract, I suspect there will be a change of management in the summer. Prediction: Away win
West Brom v QPR Tony Pulis has again proved why he is a safe pair of hands when it comes to taking overa relegation-threatened club. He came to West Brom and immediately organised them in defence and got them scoring goals, which saw them into a safe position and, dependent on results, they could still climb higher. QPR have been in the bottom three on and off for the whole season, and it is difficult to see them not being in that state come May, when the curtain falls. There are too many old players on big contracts, seeing out their playing days, and it has cost QPR dearly. Prediction: Home win
Everton v Southampton Everton, in the eyes of their fans, have under-achieved this season and there is also a section starting to push for a change of manager. Martinez guided them through a good campaign last season after getting Wigan relegated. But I was never convinced, and he has shown his true colours this time. With their remaining fixtures, Southampton look like finishing in sixth spot with a Europa League place, which will be a dream come true for their fans, considering the player exodus they suffered. For me, Ronald Koeman should be a front-runner for manager of the season. Prediction: Away win
Sunderland v Newcastle Sunderland are fighting for their Premier lives and must hope for the “new manager effect” to kick in. They got no rest during the international break as Dick Advocaat had them training and playing in a friendly to keep them match-ready for this game. Add to the fact that it is a derby match and it really is a must-win. For them. Newcastle have just been going through the motions, no cup challenge or European place, and no relegation battle, has seen them drifting along. But a clash with their arch-rivals could put a rocket up their backsides, and this should be a blood and thunder affair. Prediction: Draw
Crystal Palace v Man City The game at Palace towards the end of last season was the one which probably cost Liverpool the league, so can they do it again and stop City in their tracks? I have a feeling they might, because they have been playing good football of late and showed some real battling qualities. They can score goals, but they must keep it tight at the back. City will not be relishing this one as it has got “banana skin” written all over it. Much has been made of their recent form, but they need to keep their challenge going, and anything but a victory and they may not even finish second. Prediction: Home win
Man Utd v Aston Villa It seems that Man Utd have started to gel in the last couple of games and, after a poor start to the season, they now look like picking up a Champions League spot. They should be thankful that Liverpool and Spurs have been so poor at times, and that Southampton have dropped off the pace. But credit to them, when they have played badly they have usually managed to get results. Villa have been playing better since the managerial change and they should stay up as there are at least three teams worse than them. But Old Trafford is a tough place to get a result, and even a point here would be a bonus. Prediction: Home win
Swansea v Hull Swansea will not better their current league position but, given that they appointed a manager with little experience, finishing in the top half of the table is not a bad season. And don’t forget, they lost top-scorer Wilfried Bony in the January transfer window. They have a good squad and, with a few additions, could finish higher next season. Hull have had a poor campaign and will be disappointed that they haven’t been able to improve season on season. But they will still be here when the league resumes in August and that’s what is important. They need to strengthen in the summer. Though. if they are to avoid a relegation fight next time. Prediction: Home win
Chelsea v Stoke Chelsea just have to take each game as it comes and, provided their results match those of their rivals, they will be crowned league champions come May. They do have a couple of tricky fixtures in their run-in, but you can’t really see them dropping too many points, Mourinho will have them parking that proverbial bus in the majority of their final games. Stoke have been steady and will be happy to finish in the top half of the table, Mark Hughes is talking new contracts and already asking for backing in the summer transfer window. Prediction: Home win
