Inside this week...
THE General Election in the UK is less than four weeks away and there seems little to choose between the leading parties. And the closeness is mirrored here in Spain, where there is nothing to separate the top parties in the polls ahead of the national election later this year. Continued on page 3

Pollution fears after Russian ship sinks
Photo: Canarias 7
A Russian ship, Oleg Naydenov, sunk late on Tuesday night off the coast of Gran Canaria, raising environmental fears.
The vessel got into difficulties on Saturday night and was able to dock in port, but a serious fire was proving difficult to extinguish. As the fire continued to rage authorities took the decision to tow the boat out to deep water and sink the vessel. They believed the fire was uncontainable and was a threat to other ships. All 72 crew members were safely removed from the stricken ship before it was moved about 15 miles south of Maspalomas. But the four day fire was more serious than first thought and had done major damage to some of the ship’s key sections. Just before the ship sank it leaked a large amount of fuel into the Ocean. It’s believed the oil covers a n
area of 12 square kilometers. At first the spill seemed to be moving south of land, but yesterday, Thursday, the oil appeared to be closer than ever to the coast. On Wednesday, the government activated the national plan against this type of possible marine pollution emergency. It was granted stage 0 status (the lowest of four stages) and sent three ships to the area. The Punta Salinas, Guardamar Talia and The Miguel de Cervantes steamed to the region to start the cleanup efforts. Local politicians and environment groups say this is not enough but the Government minister in the Canaries, Maria del Carmen Hernandez Bento has defended the management so far saying “We have to take tough decisions in order to minimize risks. And the risk from the Oleg Naydenov is small. The fishing boat was towed t o an area where currents in the sea
should see any seepage heading south, away from the islands.” That has not satisfied action groups. Greenpeace, Ecologists in Action, and SEO/BirdLife have all criticized the operation and some have lamented that no lessons have been learned from the “Prestige” tanker that sank in Galicia. Comparisons with this case refer to the operation of moving the boat, which caused the vessel to break up and spill its load. The Harbour Master of Las Palmas said the National Maritime Response Plan was properly activated as per marine environment guidelines. As we go to print the clean up boats are getting to work and the Miguel de Cervantes has started to contain the oil slick. It has provided barriers, booms and skimmers to contain and collect the oil. It’s understood that there was 1,409 tons of fuel on board the Oleg Naydenov, a vessel which has courted contro v e r-
sy recently. The ship was catalogued as a pirate vessel by the Senegalese authorities and organizations such as Greenpeace. It’s registered out of Mermansk in Russia but is a frequent visitor to these shores. In fact the ship was inspected in 2013 and 2014 whilst in Las Palmas waters but was found to have nothing incriminating on board, and there was no evidence that the captain had broken any international fishing quotas. But the Senegalese see it differently and the ship was recently impounded in Dakar until a 1.2million dollar fine was paid. This directly led to a major diplomatic incident between Senegal and Russia. It’s unclear how the fire broke out on the Oleg Naydenov and the lack of information has angered local politicians. The President of the Canary Islands, Paulino Rivero, complained publicly about the lack of information from the national government at the time of the incident and has
demanded transparency. He has asked Minister Ana Pastor, to explain why it decided to move the boat from the harbour in Las Palmas and what exact measures were taken after its sinking. For her part Pastor has been in Gran Canaria to help coordinate action to prevent oceanic damage. The sinking of the Oleg Naydenov has opened a can of worms and many experts feel that a major incident is on the cards. “We are playing with fire and it will end up burning us” said Jesus Cisneros who is Professor of Marine Pollution from the University of Las Palmas. He explained that the “Canary Islands are a black spot. This Archipelago is at high risk for a major incident in our waters because of three clear risk factors: the absence of a specific plan for such contingencies, traffic between the islands of between
5,000 and 6,000 ships per year and the possibility of an international conflict since the Moroccan fishing border is not universally recognised.” There is no clear timetable on how long the clean up process will take but already the spill is hitting the innocent victims. The Gran Canaria Cabildo has confirmed that a turtle covered in oil has been rescued, The turtle was struggling in the water but he has been temporarily rehoused in the wildlife recovery centre in Taliarte, in the municipality of Telde. The turtle will stay there for a few days while she is cleaned and allowed to rest before a planned release back into the ocean at the end of the weekend.

Barca summit gets thumbs up The first ever EU-Southern Ne i g h b o ur ho od Ministerial Summit took place in Barcelona this week and the Prime Minister hailed the talks as a success.
Mariano Rajoy expressed his commitment to cooperation between the two shores of the Mediterranean on the orderly management of migratory flows and combating the threat posed by Jihadi terrorism. After saying that the Mediterranean “unites us rather than separates us” and that we should “look after it together and responsibly”,
Rajoy added that “only the implementation of common projects and resources will enable us to overcome the challenges we face on both shores because the sta-
bility and well-being of us all is at stake”. The President of the Government defended the value of unity over separation in the changing world we inhabit to-
day. “Contemplation of that which we have in common rather than that which separates us and the reaffirmation of our common values” are the basis on which
Soria is sweet on holiday jobs boom The Minister for Tourims Jose Soria believes that Spain’s tourism sector is set for further job creation in 2015.
In a key speech at the 15th World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Global Summit he said “Spain’s tourism will be a catalyst for growth and job creation.” Every year, this global summit brings together more than 1,000 representatives from the tourism sector, governments and the international media, with the aim of raising the international community’s awareness of the growing importance of tourism and the potential of the tourism industry for sustainable development at a global
level and for economic growth. Soria stressed that holding the Global Summit in Madrid will make it the very epicentre and capital of the tourism industry. He said “Tourism growth brings economic development and job creation, which all help drive economic recovery, not only in Spain, but throughout the world. Toruism drives industry in Spain. It
represents 11% of GDP, and covered 165% of the Spanish trade deficit in 2014. And in terms of job creation, the sector represents 12% of total employment in Spain.” The Minister for Tourism also underlined that the positive trend in tourism-based employment continuing into 2015, with March recording a 5.9% yearon-year increase. This is the highest figure for
March since records began. This figure is a result of the best Easter Week for eight years, according to data released by the government, with an average occupation rate of 80%. However, it should be stressed that every single month from May 2014 to March 2015 has posted the highest figure on record. These figures are not only due to the increase in inbound tourists, with a record-breaking figure of 6.5 million, a 4.5% increase on the corresponding period for 2014, but also to the net improvement in domestic tourism. Soria stressed that these figures have led to Spain becoming the world benchmark model for tourism, which was made possible by the government making this industry a State priority.
“to move forward with a passion on future projects in the best interests of all our compatriots”, he said. Mariano Rajoy stressed that the European Neighbourhood Policy is “an excellent tool” that should be modernised and refined “to better fulfil its role” in a changing environment characterised “by the magnitude of both the challenges and opportunities”. At the start of his speech, the President of the Government highlighted the “profoundly symbolic nature of Barcelona in Euro-Mediterranean politics”. He recalled that this city played host to the EuroMediterranean Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers on 27 and 28 November 2005, which led to the so-called “Barcelona Declaration”. Many countries were represented at the summit and there were some high profile politicians at the talks. These included the President of the Regional Government of Catalonia, Artur Mas, the Foreign Affairs Minister of the Republic of Latvia (currently the rotating President of the Council of the European Union), Edgars Rinkevics, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini. In an upbeat speech Rajoy explained that the goal of the Ministerial Summit in Barcelona is to further develop relations of friendship and cooperation “reaffirming the European commitment to the Mediterranean and the Mediterranean commitment to Europe” he also said that the Mediterranean must deal with two major challenges: illegal immigration and Jihadi terrorism. Regarding the first, Rajoy advocated “ordered management of migratory flows with a view to ending the heart-break-
ing drama that leads to thousands of victims.” He added that development aid, job opportunities and training opportunities should be increased for the younger members of society in their own countries. He also said there is a need to increase investment and trade with the region, as well as foster immigration through legal channels and bilateral and multilateral dialogue. In this regard, the PM said that “Europe should use all the tools it has available to create a genuine space for prosperity between the two shores of the Mediterranean” because “we have been called to act with greater commitment to governments and peoples experiencing moments of instability”. After remembering the victims of Jihadi terrorism, Mariano Rajoy stressed that this is the main challenge we must tackle because it represents “a direct threat to the security of our countries, of our people”. He insisted that the “deluded” words that describe “Jihadism as a representation of Islam” cannot be accepted because “the Islamic world is just as much a victim of the terrorist scourge as everyone else”. Mariano Rajoy explained that international cooperation is the best way to combat Jihadi terrorism. “We are stronger together”, he said. He went on to say that this fight not only requires actions that are closely linked to security but also preventive diplomacy, intercultural dialogue and control of financing sources. The PM is convinced that “a shared commitment from the two shores of the Mediterranean will enable us to defeat the terrorist barbarity and foster a common space for freedom, stability and prosperity”.

Spanish workers feeling the pinch SPANISH salaries have been left standing from the euro zone average, according to a European study.
Last year, workers in Spain were earning an average hourly rate of 15.70 euros, or 27.3% under the 21.60-euro average in the group of countries with the common currency. Seven years earlier, in 2008 - when the economic crisis began that difference w a s
Be quick to tick! THERE is still time for British Swallows to register their General Election vote.
With the registration deadline of Monday (20th April ) just a few days away, the UK Electoral Commission urges you to vote as quickly as possible. There could be as many as 5.5 million eligible citizens living overseas.
Since the introduction of the new online registration, tens of thousands of UK citizens from around the world have logged on to use the system. In comparison, ahead of last year’s European Parliamentary elections, 7 ,079 overseas voter-registration forms were downloaded. Alex Robertson, Director of Communications at the Electoral Commission, said:
“There is just a matter of days left, so we’re encouraging UK expats to join the many others who have already registered to vote online. It takes just a few minutes, at www.gov.ukS/ register-to-vote and it is far easier than the old, paper-based process. “There has been a great response so far, and we don’t want anyone to miss out on having his or her say on polling day.”
Adeje to host the Islamic Federation Adeje will host a meeting of the Canarian Islamic Federation (FIDC). The meeting takes place this Friday, April 17th, at 6pm in the Adeje Cultural Centre and is an initiative jointly supported by the Adeje and Arona councils.
The act will begin with a reading
from the Koran and a welcome address from the Federation president. Following this the Federation directors will be presented, and the programme of events in the coming months outlined. This part of the evening will be followed by a ‘spiritual night’, directed by the Los Cristianos Muslim Community, from 8.30pm – 5am, with a series of religious celebrations and a conference “El poder de la fe: reflexiones sobre la personali-
dad del creyente”, (the power of faith: reflections on the personality of the believer). On Saturday April 18th at 6pm there will be a round-table discussion in the Cultural Centre in Los Cristianos on the right to religious freedoms from historic, philosophical and judicial perspectives, and the weekend events culminate with a conference on spirituality at 8.30pm, a reading of the Koran and closing ceremonies and dinner.
24.3%, says an analysis of companies with 10 or more workers conducted by Eurostat, the European statistics bureau. Other EU countries in financial straits adopted similar measures, either out of conviction or imposition This growing gap is reflected between Spain and the European Union as a whole. The figures show a reversal of the trend o f pre-
ceding years by which Spanish salaries were slowly converging with European ones. Reducing work costs to help improve competitiveness has been a huge aim of Spain’s current conservative Popular Party government, and many reforms have been pointed in that direction. Cyprus, Portugal and Italy have also experienced growing wage gaps, compared with the group average.

Sanchez makes abortion blunder
Pedro Sanchez has been forced to apologize after making a voting mistake in a key vote. The Socialist Party leader, the main opposition to Mariano Rajoy’s Popular Party accidentally voted for a proposal on abortion that his own party is against.
Sanchez says he pressed the wrong button during the important vote on whether to debate a law requiring minors to get parental permission before getting an abortion. The faux pas didn’t have any difference on the vote which was passed easily due to the PP’s parliamentary majority. But it was very embarrassing for Sanchez, especially with important local and regional elections taking place next month. “I deeply regret my error” Sanchez said. “I am firm in my commitment to the freedom of women aged under 18. I have always publicly defended
it. I apologise for the error.” He faced ridicule on social media for the gaffe and some social commentators compared him to Homer Simpson who once avoided a nuclear meltdown by guessing which button to press in an emergen-
cy. The abortion laws remain mired in controversy in Spain and they could be a crucial topic in the national elections in November. Last year the PP ditched plans to allow the abortion procedure to take place in the first 14 weeks of a woman’s pregnancy.
It would have limited abortion to cases of rape or where the mother’s health is at serious risk. However they are tweaking restrictions on 16 and 17-year-olds seeking abortions and a new law could be place as early as June.
Internet scammers hits Brit tourists
British holidaymakers were conned out of over £2m last year through internetbased scams. A new report says criminal groups have targeted online booking firms in order to swindle money from unsuspecting customers. Many only discover they have been duped when they arrive at their accommodation and find no booking has been made. The majority of those who had been defrauded paid by methods such as bank transfer or cash with no means of getting their money back. Travel association ABTA, police and the government’s Get Safe Online service have
joined forces to urge potential fraud victims to exercise caution when booking a holiday over the internet following the report from the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau. The report reveals there were nearly 1,600 cases of holiday booking fraud reported to the police’s Action Fraud team last year. A third of victims said the fraud had a substantial impact on their health as well as their financial wellbeing and 167 victims said the impact of the crime was so severe they needed medical treatment. Mark Tanzer, ABTA chief executive, said: “Holiday fraud is a
particularly distressing form of fraud as the loss to the victim is not just financial but it can also have a high emotional impact. “Many victims are unable to get away on a long-awaited holiday or visit to loved ones and the financial loss is accompanied by a personal loss.” Those most commonly targeted are aged 30-49 and only a small proportion of those who were defrauded paid by credit or debit card, where some form of refund is available. The most common types relate to fake plane tickets, hacking accounts, bogus adverts online, and websites.

Good Lord!
George! I love a good tradition and I’m delighted that a few places are celebrating St George’s Day. I vividly remember a few years ago having a conversation with Bo from Linekers on St Paddy’s Day. We’d had a couple of pints of Guinness and we were trying to work out why there was no celebration for the English patron saint. After a few more pints of the black stuff we had hatched a plan to do a big bash at Linekers and the rest is history. It was a wonderful day and quickly became an annual event. This year the big celebration moves next door to Yates Bar and I know it’s going to be another fine celebration. See page 14 for full details and I hope to see you there. St George is not just the English patron. He is an important Saint and his legend has stood the test of time. Born in 280AD just outside Tel Aviv he was a true warrior. A fierce support of Jesus Christ he is still respected by
other religions. His legend is well documented by Muslims and it’s believed that the dragon slaying was first told in Islamic documents. Of course he didn’t really do battle with a dragon, but there is enough evidence to suggest he killed something similar. Ancient texts, dating back to the 5th century suggests some sort of slaying of a crocodile type creature. His links with England dates back to the early 11th century and by the 14th century he was revered in the vow to fight for “My Lord, My King and St George.” This Thursday he will be celebrated in Bosnia, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Georgia, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and all over Spain. As the patron saint of Aragon they feast in his name and he is the patron saint in Valencia, the Balearics and Catalonia which is why his flag is incorporated in the Barcelona crest.

Dear Editor, As previous owners for many years in Club Tenerife, or Los Diamantes Phase 11, we are appalled, horrified and stunned to find that the Pool Bar 11 has been shut down overnight. I recall a good few years back that we owners all paid a fairly large sum of money to keep the bar in existence. A variety of reasons have been given for this overnight closure. One, that the present management did not renew or update their licence. Another is that ONE owner denounced the bar because of the noise. We have used this establishment for a good number of years and always found it quietly efficient. Even many years ago, when the complex was patrolled by uniformed guards, they pulled down the shutters at 11pm on the dot. In fact, on a few occasions, the staff were asked to turn up the TV volume! As residents, and owners here for almost a decade, we still use this bar - well, we did until the other evening! Over the years, we have made lots of friends with both the staff and the people who have been running the bar. It has been a gathering point for friends, holiday-makers and residents for decades. Some have “upped sticks”, sold property in the UK and bought here, moving out to what they thought was a permanent home. The present team are a cheerful, helpful Spanish family, and all speak excellent English, led by staunch patriarch Oldtime. His attractive wife worked for many years with Club Tenerife reception, before she and all her colleagues were “paid off ”. It has been known for some time that the bar was to close at the end of April, and would be re-opened by an Italian family, who have been strangely conspicuous by their absence so far. The feeling is that there should be some questions answered by Arona Town Hall, the Local Police or whoever the “power” is. In a week that Spain accepted that General Franco was a dictator, it does not auger well for administrators. In an area bereft of “half-decent” bars, perhaps the authorities should look at socalled bars that flout the law, instead of pulling down the shutters on an oasis of tranquility. Name and address supplied.
Dear Editor, The Police said they would clamp down on speeding. I was travelling along the road between Palm Mar roundabout and the other road down to Las Galletas that goes from Guargacho. The road signs are very clear - and many on that stretch of road. I passed a 40 limit red ring sign, followed by a 60 hatched out white sign (60 limit over?). I understood that single-carriageway roads were then 90kph limit in such circumstances, and later on, after a kilometre, the next sign was 70-limit red ring, followed by a 50 red ring. The traffic police stopped me and two other cars between the 60 and just before the 70 limit sign, took 50 euros from me for doing 80kph in what I believe is a 90kph limit, saying it was a 60 limit, yet I had passed the 60 white sign a kilometre earlier. I returned and checked that I was correct. I think this was a mistake by Traffico, and although I have tried to get on to the police website to complain, there is a real certification problem with the Ministry of Interior website. And although I changed my browser to firefox, as they demand, and downloaded their certificate requirement to the system, getting in to it is pretty impossible. How on earth can one complain and get one’s 50 euros back for what is, in my opinion, obviously an error on the part of Traffico? Does anyone know differently, please? Is the speed limit other than the Spanish websites say for these roads? David Ferrar

Help, I have got noisy neighbours
By Mariano Zunino Siri
I HAVE received several letters from readers about my column on the Community of Owners, and this week I am replying to some of them.
I enjoyed your article on the community owners’ duties. Could you please expand on this? What, for example, happens if the property is not registered with the tourist rental community? Is there a fine? What are the penalties or rights? Regards. D.R. I assume that when you refer to “tourist rental community”, you mean the “Tourist Board of Canary Government”. I have written several columns about this issue. The holiday renting is different from “long-term renting” or “residential rent”. In the first case, the rental is considered tourist activity and,
according to the Tourist Canary Law, this should be registered at the Tourist Board. The European rules and judgements of the Superior Court of Canary Islands say no licence is required, and that is why many owners have been fined - not for the lack of licence but for the lack of a Visitors’ Book. I will be back with this topic in future columns because it exceeds the Community of Owners’
rules. WHAT can I do if my next-door neighbour is too noisy? It looks as though he is doing a kind of industrial activity at home, and from early in the morning. Regards, A.T. Your next-door neighbour lives in an apartment in which an “industrial” activity is not permitted. Normally, in the Statutes of the Community, this type of activity is not allowed in residential .apartments.
Car Sales The growth of online shopping has helped drive van sales in the UK to a record high, manufacturers have said.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said a home delivery boom had resulted in almost 100,000 vans being registered in the first three months of 2015 - 22.3% up on that period in 2014. It said 108,456 commercial vehicles were registered in the quarter. That is the highest number of vans and lorries sold since the trade body began compiling figures in 1987. Online sales in the UK hit £103bn last year, according to the IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index, creating a booming market for home delivery of orders.
The figure is expected to rise by 12% in 2015 to about £1 in every £4 spent by Britons. An SMMT spokesperson said: “Van registrations have risen consistently over the past two years, mainly as a result of steadily increasing business confidence and a range of attractive finance deals. The move towards online shopping and home deliveries is an important contributor to this growth - particularly that of large vans.” Ford accounted for more than a fifth of van sales in the quarter, with the mid-sized Transit Custom the most popular on 12,627 sales. The Vauxhall Vivaro was in second place on 7,449 sales, with the Volkswagen Transporter third on 5,765 units. Ford also took sixth place with the longwheelbase Transit model, which sold
5,276 units, and the small Transit Connect variant in eighth place with 4,096 sales. Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: “Commercial vehicles are crucial to the functioning of Britain’s economy and these latest figures paint a very encouraging picture. As business confidence grows, demand for the latest vans and trucks is now back to pre-recession levels - outpacing the rest of Europe.” Commercial vehicle sales mirror the buoyant new car market. Almost 493,000 cars were registered in March up 6% up on the same month in 2014 and the best monthly figure since August 1998, the SMMT said. Its figures suggest that there are about 4.4m vans and trucks on British roads, delivering 81% of all goods and shifting almost 3,000 tonnes of goods every minute.
I believe you should contact the Community Administrator. He will contact your neighbour and should find a solution. If the neighbour does not change his attitude, the Law (and probably the Statutes) have different types of solutions you can use, such as taking him to Court. I am renting an apartment. Who is enforced to pay minor repairs? Thanks, T.U. According to the Rental Agreements Law (LAU), minor repairs must be paid by the tenant (lessee). Sometimes, it is difficult to determine what “minor repairs” mean. Normally, they originate from general wear and tear. But the LAU accepts (in letting contract) clauses agreed between lessee and landlord, that the latter undertakes to pay for minor repairs. marianozuninosiri@ gmail.com

Government clamp on high-risk sports THE Canary Islands Government is to regulate companies offering high-risk sporting events and services.
A rash of paragliding injuries and deaths has sparked the long-expected ruling which, in reality, affects all sporting activities. Last month alone saw two holiday-makers die from paragliding accidents. The Directorate General of Security and Emergency in the Canary Islands Government intends to monitor more closely “high risk activities in an attempt to make Tenerife’s sporting activities safer. It is understood that measures are being drawn up which will include legality, training, insurance and firstaid care, while also setting guidelines for when and where certain activities can take place. Weather conditions,
which can vary greatly on this Island, are totally different from other countries, such as Austria, France and Germany, where paragliding is widespread. The new regulations, to give the Canary Islands Government greater control of firms offering activities, will apply to the following disciplines: diving, cruise swimming, windsurfing, kitesurfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, wakesurfing, skurfing, jet-skiing, bodyboarding, surfing, rafting, canoeing, rowing, potholing, bungee-jumping, kite buggy, quad-biking, climbing, caving, mountain-biking, motocross, motor-vehicle events, horseriding, skiing, snowboarding, paraskiing, ballooning, skydiving, base-jumping, flying ultralight flight equipment (powered and unpowered), hang-gliding, parasailing and, of course, paragliding.

MH370 search to be widened 13 months after Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 disappeared, investigators are no nearer discovering what happened and search teams have no clue as to where the plane may be.
This week it was revealed that the search area will be doubled if nothing is found in the current search zone by the end of the month. The announcement came from Australian, Malaysian and Chinese ministers who met to discuss progress. The plane, flying from the Malaysian capital to Bei-
jing, disappeared on 8 March 2014 with 239 people on board. Initially it was believed to have crashed off Western Australia, but so far no trace or clue has been found. The current search area has teams using sophisticated sonar equipment that scours a 60,000 sq km area of seabed west of Perth. 40% of this area remains to be searched but plans are now in place to move the search area north and the the search will be extended by another 60,000 sq km. This will “cover the entire highest probability area identified by expert analysis” a joint statement from the ministers said. The additional
search area could take up to a year to complete. The search zone has been defined based on analysis of hourly “handshakes” between the plane and a communications satellite. There is still no explanation as to why it flew so far off course - making finding the plane and its “black box” voice recorders key to understanding its fate. “We are confident we are searching in the right area” Australian Transport Minister Warren Truss told journalists after the meeting. “We are confident we have the best search equipment. If the plane is in the area we will find it.”
Chess cheat rumbled! A chess grandmaster has been thrown out of an international tournament after being caught cheating on his mobile phone.
Gaioz Nigalidze, the current Georgian national champion was rumbled after he made repeated trips to the toilet to allegedly check tactics on a mobile phone he had hidden inside a cubicle. He faces a 15 year ban after being expelled from the Dubai Open for using his smartphone against Armenian grandmaster Tigran L Petrosian. Nigalidze was exposed when Petrosian grew suspicious about his frequent trips to the lavatory during last weeks sixth-round match. Tournament officials found Nigalidze had hidden a mobile phone
in a cubicle, covered in toilet paper. The Dubai Chess and Culture Club announced its decision to expel Nigalidze and posted a picture of the phone and an official game sheet of moves. British former world title contender Nigel Short told Sky News that Nigalidze “should be stripped of his GM (grandmaster) title and banned immediately.” He called for the World Chess Federation (FIDE) to tighten up rules, and questioned on Twitter whether it should introduce “mandatory two-year bans for computer cheats”. Petrosian told the Daily Telegraph “Nigalidze would promptly reply to my moves and then literally run to the toilet. I noticed that he would always visit the same toilet partition, which was strange, since two other partitions weren’t occupied. I informed
the chief arbiter about my growing suspicions and asked him to keep an eye on Gaioz. “After my opponent left the very toilet partition yet another time, the arbiters entered it. What they found was the mobile phone with headphones; the device was hidden behind the pan and covered with toilet paper.” When questioned about the offence, Nigalidze said: “Not everything is true in what Petrosian said.” It is not the first time a player has been caught cheating at a chess tournament. In July 2013, Bulgarian player Borislav Ivanov was suspended for four months after officials found most of his moves matched those of the top computer chess programmes. In 2008, at the Dubai Open, an Iranian player was banned after he was found receiving help via text messages.

A Good driver or bad driver? By n332.es
In the latest data revealed by the Fundación VINCI Autoroutes, drivers on Spanish roads reveal the “truth” about their driving habits.
The good is that 94% of all Spanish road users used the word “polite” to describe themselves, 71% described themselves as “careful” and 61% as “calm”. In fact, in the positive rating scale, Spain overall comes out at 7.8 out of 10, slightly higher than the 7.7 out of 10 European average, according to the drivers themselves. Oddly though, when it comes to assessing the behaviour of others, Spanish drivers consider 41% of their fellow road users to be
irresponsible, 34% are stressed, 30% are aggressive and they collectively consider 22% to be dangerous. According to the data collected, Sweden is home to the most exemplary drivers, the most irresponsible are the Italians, and the most critical are the Spanish, but of their fellow countrymen. When it comes to admitting what they do wrong, or at least getting a little closer to the truth, 87% admit to speeding by a “few” kil-
ometres per hour, an increase of 8 points since the 2014 survey, but a little lower than the European average of 91%. When it comes to indicating, 63% say that they sometimes forget to indicate a manoeuvre on the roads, an increase of 23 points since 2014, and somewhat higher than the 58% European average. Whilst driving, 62% admit to not respecting a safe distance from the vehicle in front, up 12 points from the 2014
survey, and slightly lower than the European average of 65%. Whilst driving on the motorway network, 60% admit to sticking in the centre lane when the right hand, normal driving lane is clear, up 8 points from 2014, higher than the European average of 56%. When approaching road works, 59% admit to not slowing down, up 13 points in a year, and higher than the 55% European average. Inappropriate use of the horn is done by 64%
of all drivers, only increasing 1 point since 2014, but considerably higher than the 47% European average. In fact, Spain comes out on top of this chart. Expressing insults to other drivers has been the admittance of 62% of Spanish road users, again increasing but by 3 points, and again higher than the European average of 56%. Some 31% also admit to deliberately sticking too close to a car driven by somebody who has irritated them, an increase of 5 points, but actually slightly lower than the 32% in Europe. Finally, 19% admitting to stopping their vehicle in order to have a “discussion” with another driver, again an increase of 3 points, and higher than the 15% European average. Although the data may not be completely accurate, as it is based
on the admittance of drivers that they are doing things wrong, something that, also according to the data, more people do than care to admit themselves, it is clear that the figures in most segments are increasing, and at an alarming rate. Remember that despite the admittance of all of these dangerous attitudes and actions, 94% of all Spanish road users used the word “polite” to describe themselves, and 71% described themselves as “careful”. A safer driving attitude begins and ends with the driver and there are countless lessons we can all learn when things go devastatingly wrong with catastrophic and fatal results. Keep calm, keep your distance, keep your speed under control and keep safe.

Bars hit by new drink-driving laws The lowering of the legal drinkdrive limit in Scotland has affected business in the hospitality sector, according to a major new report.
Mafia Don caught in Spanish post office One of Italy’s most wanted gangsters has been arrested on the Costa del Sol while trying to withdraw money from a post office.
Lucio Morrone, known as “Spalluzzella”, is described by Spain’s Guardia Civil as head of a dangerous clan in the Naples Camorra. He was sentenced to 20 years in jail for drug trafficking and on the
run for five years. Morrone was caught in a joint operation involving Spanish and Italian police. In 2013, Italian authorities told their Spanish counterparts that Morrone, thought to be head of the Teste Matte (Crazy Heads) clan active in Naples’ Spanish quarter, may have moved to Spain to evade capture. He was eventually spotted in the small town of Benalmadena, which is just south of
Malaga, after surveillance of tourist sites and areas popular among local Italians, authorities say. Morrone, 53, was carrying forged documents when he went to pick up money that had been wired from Naples and he was detained under a European arrest warrant. Last week, another member of the Naples mafia, Carlo Leone, was detained in western Spain. He had been on the run since 2009.
The Bank of Scotland said restaurants and bars were seeing “a changing pattern of spending” because of the new law, which came into force before Christmas. The new legislation on drink-driving reduced the legal alcohol limit from 80mg to 50mg in every 100ml of blood. Drivers have been warned that having “no alcohol at all” is the only way to ensure they stay within the limit – and to avoid planning car journeys for the morning after a night drinking. In the wake of the law change, Police Scotland assistant chief constable Bernard Higgins encouraged drinkers to ‘leave the car at home’
if they were planning to go for a drink. He said: “There is no safe amount of alcohol in the body if you drive. It is clear when it comes to drinking and driving, that the simple “the best advice is none” message is the right one.” In February, purchasing consortium Beacon published a survey of hospitality sector customers that suggested Scottish businesses saw bar sales drop by up to 60% in the two months after the introduction of the new law. Bank of Scotland chief economist Donald MacRae said: “Manufacturing exporters have been affected by the falling euro while services businesses in hospitality are seeing a changing pattern of spending resulting from the lowered alcohol limit while driving.” Paul Waterson, chief executive of the Scottish Licensed Trade Association, said the new law was so draconian that it amounted to “a
form of prohibition” which attacked moderate drinking and frightened people into staying away from alcohol altogether. “It’s stopped people having a drink at lunchtime, or having a drink on the way home from work. People aren’t coming in for food with their families on a Sunday afternoon,” he said. “We feel it’s had an effect far worse than the smoking ban had in 2006. There’s questions being asked about the future of the trade – it’s probably the last nail in the coffin for independent operators.” Ray Lorimer, chair of the Scotland branch of the Institute of Hospitality, said that while the new law was affecting pubs and restaurants, some were “managing the change” by putting on social events during the day to attract new customers. “The smoking ban hurt the pubs, and now the drink-driving so they’ve got to try and do something different,” he added.

Expecting quads at 65 It sounds like a channel 5 reality TV show, but RTL in Luxembourg have screened an interview with a 65-year-old German grandmother who is pregnant with quadruplets.
Annegret Raunigk, who has 13 children and seven grandchildren, decided to try for another child because her youngest daughter, who is ten, wanted a little brother or sister. The Russian and English teacher, from Berlin, became pregnant after 18 months of artificial insemination. Her baby is due in
the summer and would make her the world’s oldest mother of quadruplets. Raunigk was too old to be considered for IVF treatment in Germany. Laws on reproductive medicine are much stricter there than in other countries, and include a ban on egg donation and a restriction on the number of eggs that can be implanted. The criteria for who is considered eligible for IVF are also strictly controlled and exclude, for instance, lesbian couples, meaning that thousands of Germans travel abroad each year for treatment. There are no restrictions on them doing so. Raunigk went to a clinic in Ukraine, where she was implanted with
eggs and sperm from donors. Seemingly contrary to the doctor’s expectations, all four of the eggs developed into embryos. The chance of a natural quadruplet pregnancy is otherwise one in 13m. The prospective mother-of-17 told German newspaper Bild of her surprise when doctors told her the news. “Certainly that was a shock for me. After the doctor discovered there were four, I had to give it some thought to begin with” she said. “I’m not actually afraid. I simply assume I’ll remain healthy and fit. In matters of organisation I have enough experience, that’s not new for me.” Asked if she thought she was too old to bring up four babies, she said: “How does one have to be at 65? One must apparently always fit some clichés which I find rather tiring. I think, one must decide that for oneself.” Ms Raunigk, who is now a household name in Germany, first made headlines 10 years ago when she gave birth to her 13th child, Lelia, at the young age of 55. But not all of her kids are happy with the decision, and one is concerned the family may end up raising the new arrivals for her. Her son Velten Raunigk, 27, said: “I don’t think it is a good thing for mum to be having even more babies.” He said that his youngest sister Leila, who turned ten this week, is already bullied at school because of her “grandma mum” and he and his siblings fear they will be left to bring up the quads if anything happens to his aging mother. He said the family learned about her pregnancy after a family gathering earlier this year. “I remember mum drank no wine and she seemed to be wearing extra-wide clothes,” he said. “I had a feeling even before she told us.”

Buy, buy Miss American Pie, Paracetamol can going cheap get your back up at under £1m MILLIONS of people worldwide suffer lower-back pain, which, affects some 44% of the British population.
Paracetamol is usually recommended to treat this acute pain, but experts are convinced this pain-killing drug is no better than the dummy pills (placebos) used in tests. The largest trial to date, published in The Lancet, suggests the drug does not improve recovery time or provide greater pain relief than a placebo. The study questions whether paracetamol should remain a firstchoice drug on most national guidelines. But experts caution that anyone considering a change of medication should seek professional advice from a doctor. Paracetamol does not work for every type of pain, and neither does it work for every person. About 26 million people suffer from lowerback pain each year in the UK, and it remains a leading cause of disability worldwide. Researchers studied more than 1,650 people across several primarycare centres in Australia, who had experienced back pain for six weeks or less. For a month, one-third received regular doses of paracetamol, a third took the drug as needed and the final third were given a (placebo) for one month Paracetamol did not reduce the intensity of the pain, and neither did it improve sleep quality. And scientists found there was no difference in recovery time for all three groups: a 17-day average. Lead author Dr Christopher Williams, from the University of Sydney, said: “The results suggest we need to reconsider the universal
recommendation to provide paracetamol as a first-line treatment.” The researchers say the mechanisms behind lower-back pain may differ from those in pain felt in other conditions, such as headaches, toothaches and postsurgery discomfort, in which there is evidence that paracetamol can provide relief. And, as people in the trial recovered more quickly than those in some previous studies, they suggest the advice and reassurance provided during their trial may be more effective than medication. Dr Andrew Moore, a senior researcher at Oxford’s Churchill Hospital not involved in the research, told the BBC: “Paracetamol does not work for every type of pain, and nor does it work for every person. “There has been evidence emerging for some time that paracetamol does not benefit most people with chronic back pain, for example. And I’m willing to bet that in 10 years, national guidelines will have changed.” However, the researchers were unsure what to recommend instead because of the side-effects of some anti-inflammatory pain-killers, and they say people should discuss options with their doctor. Prof Roger Knaggs, of the British Pain Society, said: “Despite how common paracetamol use is, this question hasn’t been studied in such a rigorous way before. “For people who feel no benefit, there are alternative strategies. They should speak to their pharmacists or doctors and discuss any side-effects of other medication.” Prof Christine Lin, an author on the study, said: “Other ways to ease back pain include remaining as active as possible and avoiding bed rest.”
SINGER Don McLean’s original manuscript of his huge hit record, American Pie, was sold for £806,000 at a New York auction on Tuesday.
It seems an absolute fortune, yet bidding for the 16page draft was expected reach £1m at the Christie’s sale. The Anerican hinted in February that the original manuscript would reveal the song’s lyrical meaning, - which had always been a mystery. “The writing and the lyrics will divulge everything there is to divulge,” he said. But they didn’t! When asked what the song meant to him, he said jokingly: “It means I don’t ever have to work again if I don’t want to.” The 69-year-old did acknowledge that the song’s beginning was about the 1959 death of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Vales and the Big Bopper (JP Richardson) in a plane crash, but he has always been elusive about the rest of the track. McLean, who admitted writing the song was “a mystical trip into his past”, decided on a whim to sell the manuscript, which includes multiple drafts, with handwritten notes and deletions. The song, still immensely popular, was No.1 in the US for four weeks and reached No.2 in the UK singles chart in 1972. Madonna also released a version in 2000, topping the charts in many countries, including the UK, Canada and Australia.
Tribute to US heroes THE American Government is planning to exhume the remains of nearly 400 US servicemen killed at Pearl Harbour.
It wants to identify the bodies to give each one an individual burial. The sailors and marines were aboard the battleship USS Oklahoma when it was struck by Japanese torpedoes in 1941. American Defence officials, who say their remains were buried
together in Hawaii, will use advances in forensic and DNA testing. Japan’s attack on the Pearl Harbour US base brought the America into World War Two. The Oklahoma was one of several warships targeted by Japanese submarines and aircraft in the surprise assault in December 1941, when more than 2,400 people were killed. American officials say the identity effort would be aided by advances in forensic science and technology, as well as by
genealogical help from family members. Robert Work, Deputy Secretary of Defence, said: “While not all families will receive an individual identification, we will strive to provide resolution to as many families as possible.” So far, the remains of just 35 of the 429 sailors and marines killed aboard the Oklahoma have been identified. The remainder, retrieved during salvage operations from 19421944, have been buried in caskets, marked as “unknown”, at a Ha-
waii national cemetery. Tom Gray told the Associated Press news agency that his family had waited more than 70 years to give a proper burial to the remains of his cousin, Edwin Hopkins, who was killed aboard the Oklahoma. While he said it was an honour for his cousin to have been buried at a national cemetery, he added: “I also think a boy gives up his life at 19 years old and ends up in a common grave marked as ‘unknown’ isn’t proper.”

THE fantastic euro-pound exchange rate has seen even more international investors focus on the Spanish property market.
Adding to the allure is Spain’s “Golden Visa” scheme, which grants Spanish residency to non-EU citizens who invest 500,000 euros or more in a property It has already been taken up by more than 500 foreign nationals since its introduction in October 2013, and the requirements were recently relaxed to allow more people to benefit. Under the original conditions, the visa was granted to an applicant, plus his/her spouse and children under the age of 18,

Spain’s Property market’s booming
The new rules allow for unmarried couples and economically-dependent relatives to receive the same benefits, while the age limit on children has been removed entirely. Meanwhile, those applying can now begin the process once they have arrived in Spain, instead of having to send the application from overseas. In addition to the new regulations, making it easier for families to relocate to Spain, there are other factors - like currency exchange rates and negative interest rates. The sce-
nario has made the property market attractive to overseas investors - particularly those from Britain and Switzerland. The British pound recently hit seven-year highs against the euro, and the Swiss franc surged higher when its central bank called an end to its pegging against the euro. It means that buyers from these countries can enjoy greater savings,
compared with a year ago. Investors from Britain will save around 14% because of the change in currency rates from a year ago, while buyers from Switzerland can see savings of around 17%. For British buyers, it equates to a onemillion-euro property costing just £770,000 today, against a year
ago, when it would have been around £835,000. There are other ways for property-buyers to save even more. Transferring funds across international borders can attract fees if done through a High-Street bank, but investors might also lose out if they pick a provider that uses unfavourable rates. Currency specialists, such as Currencies Direct, can often save
investors up to 5% compared with High Street banks on transfers, simply by offering better rates and not charging fees. It seems the timing is just right for international investors looking to enter the Spanish property market. For help in keeping on top of the currency market, contact Carol Schleisman at Currencies Direct: canaries@ currenciesdirect.com - or see our regular Canarian Weekly advert on page 13.

Sunday 19th April, ITV1, 22.15 Episode 1: Michael Jackson’s Thriller with Ashley Banjo It was one of the best days of Ashley Banjo’s life when Michael Jackson invited the young British choreographer and his dance group, Diversity, to support him at his planned London concerts in 2009. But the concerts never happened – the American superstar died following an overdose of prescription drugs – so Ashley never got to meet his musical idol. This documentary follows Ashley as he finds out more about the man who inspired him to dance and, in particular, Thriller - the album which sold a record breaking sixty million copies and catapulted Michael Jackson to global superstardom. Ashley heads out to California to meet the people who Jackson worked with to create the best selling album of all time. Engineer Bruce Swedien recalls the first day of the recording when legendary producer Quincy Jones told the team that they were there to save the ailing music industry. It was a bold ambition which Michael Jackson accepted and fulfilled with room to spare. We hear from Greg Phillinganes, the main keyboard player on the album about hearing the demo of Billie Jean for the first time, his explanation of why this track became a soul classic and the pressures of fame on Michael at that time. Michael Jackson chose Irish director, Steve Barron, to make the video for Billie Jean after seeing his work on The Human League’s Don’t You Want me. Steve shares what it was like to witness the explosive dance sequence for the video to very first time it was revealed to the world. The moonwalk became associated with Jackson’s live performances of Billie Jean but the first time he executed the move in public came some months after the video at the Motown 25 celebrations. Jeffrey Daniel talks about working with Michael on his dance moves, his own response to the famous Motown performance and the part the Michael Jackson and Thriller played in bringing Street Dance to a wider audience. The follow up single to Billie Jean was another Michael Jackson composition: the rock inspired Beat It. Members of rock group Toto share the hilarious tale of how they came to work on this song – and helped to open up Michael Jackson to a whole new audience. Bob Giraldi, director of the video for Beat It, explains how Michael Jackson got members of two notorious Los Angeles gangs, the Crips and the Bloods, involved in the video shoot and the moment of film magic that saved the production. Dancer and choreographer, Vincent Paterson, talks to Ashley about working with Michael for first time on the Beat It video – and the way that life changed for the young singer after the phenomenal success of the Thriller album.

Slow Train Through Africa with Griff Rhys Jones ITV1, 21.00 In episode two, Griff begins a 1700-mile journey across North Africa in Morocco. His North African train ride takes him east on a line that links the great trading cities of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia with the Mediterranean on one side and the Sahara on the other. From Tunis, Griff will head South towards the desert and final destination of Tozeur. He begins his journey in the city of Marrakech, where he stocks up for his trip with items from the souk, including some traditional Berber medicines. Griff says: “I love Morocco. I love the feeling of being on the cusp of Africa here. What could be more authentic, you see? What could be more Moroccan, than a cup of mint tea? Except that tea was introduced by the English when they took over Tangiers and it comes all the way from China. So, whenever you’re in Africa, the idea that we are coming here on this huge journey to look for the ‘real’ Africa is nonsense. You never find the real Africa, what you find is the mix that created Africa from way back.” Griff boards the train for his seven-hour journey to Fes and keen to make friends, he shares some sweet pastries with his fellow passengers and discovers that one is a travelling salesman for Berber medicines. He sells Griff some more remedies including a stick that doubles as a toothbrush, although Griff politely declines the offer of some brown paste used to treat worms. In the ancient city of Fes, Griff enlists the help of possibly Morocco’s most eccentric guide, Abdul, to ensure he doesn’t get lost in the medieval streets and medinas. Griff says: “This is a bit spooky isn’t it? The whole city is like a maze which ends in dead ends and that was for defensive purposes. As you go along, you come to these huge gates and they could shut off whole quarters. The actual gates of the city of Fez were locked every night up until the 1960s.” Abdul takes Griff to learn more about the art of leather-making, one of the cities oldest crafts. The leather is washed several times and then soaked in a mixture of lime and cows urine. Griff attempts to help the artisans but nearly throws up in the process. Griff continues his journey along the railway built by French colonialists but as the border between Morocco and Algeria is currently closed, he must embark on an enormous dog-leg, going all the way to Spain before flying back to North Africa and the Algerian port of Oran.

Cookery competition. It’s the last of the semifinals, and it’s do or die for the best six amateurs as they cook off to win a coveted place in the prestigious MasterChef final week. The contestants have just one challenge to win a place in the final five - to cook an outstanding dish to win over three of the country’s most feared restaurant critics - Charles Campion, Tracey MacLeod and William Sitwell. Serving food to these masters of the dining room is a daunting task for the most adept chefs and these talented home cooks now have to put their skills and palates on the line. Match Of The Day Live: Reading v Arsenal BBC1, 17.05
Gary Lineker introduces live coverage from Wembley of the FA Cup semi-final between Reading and defending champions Arsenal. Championship club Reading last played at this stage of the competition 88 years ago and they are vying to reach their first final. However, an Arsenal side boasting the attacking talents of Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud will start as heavy favourites in their record-equalling 28th FA Cup semifinal. The Gunners have won all 12 previous meetings against Reading, with the three most recent games producing 24 goals. Half of those came in an extraordinary League Cup tie in 2012 when a Theo Walcott hat-trick inspired Arsenal’s comeback from 4-0 down to win 7-5 after extratime. Commentary comes from Steve Wilson and Danny Murphy.

Over Deadliest Men centuries they developed extraordinary underwater spear fishing and swimming techniques, with many able to hold their breath for several minutes at a time. Recent government pressure has meant that most of the Bajau have settled in stilted houses built on the water, forming a unique community. For three weeks Will lives with a spear fisherman called Kabei and his family including their disabled son Lobo, in their small stilted house on the sea. It becomes clear that many older Bajau cling fiercely to their waterborne identity and Kabei hasn’t been on land for over three years, choosing instead to spear fish with a homemade spear gun and goggles. His skills in the water are breathtaking, but his life is brutal and uncompromising. When Will visits the local market where Bajau women trade fish for fresh water and vegetables at pitifully low prices, he witnesses how they are mistrusted and exploited by the mainland villagers. Will fishes with the Bajau, observing their astonishing skills as well as the declining fish stocks and illegal fishing practices affecting their patch. Against this backdrop of adversity, Kabei and his family adhere to traditional practices, whereas many young Bajau instead choose school over spear fishing. Travel Man: 48 Hours in Marrakech Channel 4, 20:30
Richard Ayoade is joined by actor Stephen Mangan for a weekend in the vibrant city of Marrakech, in Morocco. Richard wants to pack the most into 48 hours with the minimum amount or faff meaning there’s no time to sit down and take shelter from the heat. Wanting to experience the city’s famous street food, the pair sample a local delicacy of a steamed sheep’s head - an eye-opening culinary experience they’ll remember for a long time. They take an early morning hot air balloon flight over the Atlas Mountains with breathtaking views. And the best part is that they’re up and down in just one hour. They take in a traditional story-telling performance, visit the historic Sardian tombs and Marrakech’s ancient tanneries. Finally, in search of a suitable place to sum up the holiday experience, Richard and Stephen head into the desert to for a contemplative camel ride.

PA ‘double dad’ has to rush between the bedsides of two expectant mothers, while Matthew realises he’s landed Lisa’s boyfriend in trouble. Ian is suspended and asks Matthew to find him a job in the hospital. Newly qualified midwife Matthew Bunting (Darren Boyd) is experiencing a kind of re-birth, having given up his life as a police constable in his mid 30s in the hope of finding something more meaningful. He is too warm and caring to be a cop. Arriving in his first job as a junior midwife at Easthill Park Maternity Unit, Matthew makes an instant impact on his new team members. They are led by recently divorced senior midwife Caitlin (Fay Ripley), witty and likeable junior midwife Lisa (Aisling Bea), the extremely nononsense senior midwife Pat (Llewella Gideon) and naïve trouble-maker Tash (Jennie Jacques). Matthew has company from his former police buddy Ian (Paddy McGuinness) who gets suspended from the force and lands a job in hospital security, while his nemesis comes in the shape of senior consultant obstetrician Luke Edward (Alex Macqueen). The team have to contend with teenage parents, a ‘double dad’ who has two partners in labour, a pregnant prisoner on release, an incognito celebrity, a major theft from the drugs cupboard and an abandoned baby.

A one-hour special marks the return of the award-winning comedy about the BBC. One year on and Head of Values Ian Fletcher (Hugh Bonneville) has finally got his own office. He and the team have a new set of challenges to rise to, including the impending Royal visit of HRH The Prince of Wales. The question is, which of the management team will get to shake the royal hand? Head of BBC Brand Siobhan Sharpe (Jessica Hynes) and her team at Perfect Curve have been tasked with giving a makeover to the BBC coverage of Wimbledon following rumours of a bid from a rival broadcaster. Her response is a brand mashup to end all brand mashups. Meanwhile, over on the creative frontline, Entertainment Format Producer David Wilkes (Rufus Jones) is trying to come up with the next big Factual Entertainment series after Britain’s Tastiest Village failed to fly. He’s got the title - Up Town, Down Town - he just hasn’t got a show, or a cast. Finally, intern Will Humphries’ (Hugh Skinner) security pass won’t let him into the building: is it a technical problem or something more significant?

It’s all gone quiet get well DYLAN!
HUNDREDS of wellwishers have flooded Facebook with goodwill messages after hearing that one of the Island’s most popular entertainers was involved in a traffic accident. Dylan Tennant, in hospital in the North, has had surgery on his right
foot after last week’s accident. He remains one of the most successful DJs Linekers bar has had as a resident. He has also been part of award-winning duo Loaded, alongside Scot Henderson, at Leonardos.
Dylan now has his own bar on the El Mirador strip, in Los Cristianos, simply called Dylan’s. We all wish you a speedy recovery Dylan, and I’m sure a party will be occurring on your discharge from hospital.
THE last three weeks have been full of ups and downs for the Island’s entertainers, and the bars which present shows in the evenings.
Easter is always an odd time of year, and lots of singers have been frustrated at the number of cancellations from their regular gigs. It’s also equally frustrating for the bars to have to cancel. Entertainment is a tool used by bar-owners to entice people into their venue, and is also something for which patrons of the bar do not pay. I was chatting with an owner earlier this week about this, and he summed it up very well. “As a business, we make our money by selling beer,” he said. “The entertainment we put on is free, so if people don’t come in and buy the beer, we can’t feasibly put on free entertainment.” You can’t argue with that, but it doesn’t help the performing artistes pay the bills when they are being cancelled. This has, for years, been the nature of the beast here, and most acts accept that this is the way. The hotels have been full with families, but few venture out to the bars to watch shows, and those who do come out of their all-inclusive
The King of Clubs is set to make history this year. Manager Ricardo and his team are in the process of organising a world-record attempt this summer.
Preparations are underway to break an existing record for the longest club DJ session. The original record was initially set back in the Eighties and, more recently, broken on 9th August 2014 in Singapore, comprising 133 participants. Ricardo. who aims to break this record by involving up to 175 DJs, has already formally applied to Guinness World Records to do so in Tramps this summer. The organising of so many DJs will be a major task in itself. Ricardo has to make sure that the order in which they relay does not conflict with the different genres being played during the attempt. This will be a major event, and will put Tramps firmly on the global map of top clubs. So many DJs have already shown an interest, but more are required to get involved. Each participant will receive a Guinness World Record Certificate once the record has been achieved. Interested parties should send an email to; ricardo@trampstenerife.com Ricardo is highly-motivated and well-organised. He also has a great deal of experience as a DJ, so I have no doubt that this summer, Tramps Tenerife will define why it has the title of King of Clubs.
haven do so 10 minutes before a show starts in a bar close to their hotel. They buy one round of drinks and slowly let that beer warm up as they nurse their pints while watching a show. This, again, you cannot argue with as the tourists are on holiday and have the prerogative to go where they want, when they want and spend what they want. Many point the finger at the all-inclusive hotels, but is it their doing entirely? I don’t think so. The all-inclusive concept is something UK High-Street tour operators use as a selling point, and also one that guarantees an income for the hotel for a set period. This is a business model that works for both hotels and tour operators, yet it has an adverse effect on other businesses - and entertainers suffer the most. It will not change any time soon, but it’s worth remembering that just 25% of holiday-makers are allinclusive. These deals have been made and contracted over many years between the big companies who have no responsibility towards ensuring an income for an artiste in Tenerife. It’s all about the big bucks at the end of the day, and the small busi-
nesses have to suffer because of this. Lots of bars have found that putting on daytime entertainment has been a fix to replacing lost income from the lack of attendance in the evenings. But even that has suffered in recent weeks, with daytime shows being cancelled or reduced. There is no solution really, unless the people who visit our lovely island decide against all-inclusive and venture out of the hotels to visit the fabulous showbars on these shores. The entertainers must simply ride out the storm. Having said that, some shows consistently fill the bars in which they are billed and pack them out. However, I would struggle to list more than 10 who seem to have that magical formula to achieve this. That is not enough to go around all the venues in the South. There are some great shows , and all the entertainers work so hard and are of a high standard. But to tap into something that makes people come out of the hotels and into the bars, is an art itself. If entertainers were paid a euro every time they heard the phrase, “hopefully, it will pick up next week,” cancellations wouldn’t be such a worry.

Belgabar
Simply mouth-watering! OUR Canarian Weekly tastetesters were invited to a food review at a new edition to the gastronomic scene, and we were in for a real treat!
Belgabar, is just a short walk from the sea-front at The Patch, in Las Americas. So no buts or maybe: the food better be good because I was going to miss the first BGT this year. And it was very good! In fact, the delicious food served all night was on a par with any of the best restaurants on the Island. When you step into the restaurant, you enter a large, tropical terrace, split into three areas, two for outside dining, with a lounge area in between both. We chose to eat inside as there was still a bit of a chill in the air. The décor is under-
stated to the point of being unnoticeable, which has the significant advantage of allowing you to concentrate on the food, and each other! We are in a darkish room, with trendy, mood lighting throughout the restaurant and music that wasn’t excessively loud. We were asked if it would be okay for the chef (previously from the Sheraton Hotel and Jardines restaurant, Royal Garden Villas) to give us a taste of the
menu. Of course, we agreed and were asked if were allergic to anything or, specifically, didn’t like anything. Nice touch! To accompany our meal, we chose a local wine, Mencey Chasna. This is a young, medium red, clean and bright with a red, fruity aroma … very easy to drink, served at the correct temperature (not chilled as in a lot of restaurants) and perfect for what was about to come. Our first serving was
prawns, wrapped in a green vine and finished in a crispy coating, with ample mango chutney on the side. The dish was presented perfectly, and the prawns large, fresh and meaty. The next course was a large salad - far too much for me. It was served with deep-fried goat’s cheese, tomatoes and olives. If there was one compliment I would like to share, and there were many, it was from my dining partner: “I would come here every lunch-time
just to have this salad.” We were then offered the prawns, cooked in a coconut source. There were eight prawns on each plate, large and meaty, with just the right amount of delicious, coconut sauce and fresh coconut shavings around the plate. Everything we were served with was of the highest quality and freshness and, along with the presentation, absolutely superb! By this time we were getting quite full, so the Cosmopolitan raspberry-based sorbet was more than welcome. This refreshed the palate and looked more like something you’d get in a New York cocktail bar. After the welcome break, we were served our main course: fillet steak for me, and fresh Sea Bass for my partner. It was one of the finest steaks I’ve had in a long, long time and utterly delicious, served
with fresh, seasonal vegetables a homemade mushroom sauce - real bite-size mushrooms - and fried potatoes. The Sea Bass was served with mashed potatoes and seasonal, fresh vegetables, meaty, moist and bone free! The end of the evening came with my partner’s best part of any meal: the dessert. We were served with home-made apple pie with caramelised pineapple, mint and strawberry, AND a four-berry beer reduction (wow, a must-try). The second plate was ice cream with a fresh banana cream over a home-made chocolate brownie - both divine. We will be returning here, and soon. Why Cornwall lapped up our Tenerife wines By Pentreath
INCREDIBLE though it seems, Cornwall is linked indelibly with Tenerife via their joint trading activities, stretching back as far as the 17th Century.
Cornwall simply couldn’t get enough of Tenerife wine - mainly Malmsey, a sweet white variety, and Vidueno, a drier wine - while Islanders absolutely loved the county’s pilchards (and Devon wool as well)! One historian wrote: “At decisive moments, all the economic life of the Canary Islands came to depend on a decision taken in London.” The West Country traded happily with Tenerife for many years, thanks initially to the diligence of Cornishman Samuel Enys, who lived at Penryn and, from 1648, sent ships to the Canaries to bring back wine. His oldest son, also Samuel, was sent to Tenerife soon afterwards to take charge of the business end there, to be followed by younger brother Valentine some years later. But it wasn’t always
easy for Valentine. In 1665 a group of merchants, with the blessing of the English Government, tried to monopolise the trade by setting up a Canary Company. There was an outcry from furious English traders in the Canaries who had been excluded from the company, and the following year, a riot ensued in Garachico, then the principal port in North Tenerife. So much wine was exported to England that many merchants there headed to Tenerife to organise the Canarian end of the operation. Surprisingly, not even the bitter 1701-1714 War of the Spanish Succession could halt the trade between Tenerife and England. The Dutch and French also traded successfully with the Island, even though all three were regarded as the enemy of Spain. This major European conflict arose from the disputed succession to the throne of Spain following the death of the childless Charles II. It involved major claimants England, Holland and France, but it could not stop Val-
entine, a long-time Tenerife resident before the war, from pursuing his trading ambitions. So much so that he even organised smuggling trips on the Post Office “packet” ships, carrying mail and passengers, which sailed from Falmouth to Lisbon. Peace was finally brokered through Spain’s concessions in Europe and the Americas, Britain gaining substantial colonial and commercial benefits, to the delight of Valentine and his rival traders, comprising English and Dutch Protestants, Irish and Spanish Catholics, French Huguenots and Spanish and Portugese Jews. Va l -
entine, who had moved back to Cornwall by this time, was part of this thriving network of merchants and, throughout the war, trading events were brought to life in a series of letters written by the man himself. He wrote to friends in England and the world over, especially to those in the Canary Islands, and a compilation of his mail “The Letter Book of Valentine Enys”. It comprised thousands upon thousands of words, gleaned from more than 1,500 letters, and was trimmed down considerably and transformed into a book, edited by June Palmer (Institute of Cornish Studies, University of Exeter) and published in 1997. His letters contained previously unknown information on the trade of pilchards, cloth, tin and timber, and on the history of the Post Office packets. Above all, though, his letters revealed the importance of Cornwall as a trading post, as a centre of intelligence and a stopping-off place for ships coming from, or about to sail out into the Atlantic. But his great love was always Tenerife. Curiously, he never retained the let-
ters sent to him by his many friends, although many on-record documents give clues to some of their content. The year 1702 was somewhat of a watershed in Valentine’s life. Because of the war, he had been compelled to leave Tenerife, where he had spent 20 years building his trading business. The Canaries belonged to Spain, who captured the Islands during the 15th century and were, therefore, regarded as Britain’s enemy. So Valentine returned to his native town of Penryn in Cornwall to attempt to continue his career as a Canarian merchant. This proved difficult for obvious reasons because the source of his imported wine - his main income source - was actually made in enemy territory. But Cornwall proved to be the most sensible place for him to resume business. The most south-westerly English county stretches out to the Atlantic and is surrounded the sea on three sides. And that meant its economy for the most part was bound up with the sea and, thus, with trade. Apart from its pil-
chards, Cornwall was also famous for its tin mines and - war or no war - both were important commodities for Tenerife and the other Canary Islands. So Valentine was a happy man, as were his Canarian recipients. Incidentally, as many Tenerifians will know, the Canary Islands were used as a staging post to the Americas by Christopher Columbus and other English seamen. Sir Francis Drake took on supplies there and, as such, the association was of vital importance to Spain. By 1678, the Canaries’ population had swelled to 93,000, of whom more than half were in Tenerife. And when the wars between Spain and England were over, trade between the countries improved dramatically, with English traders positively cashing in. Sadly, the boom wasn’t to last. Demand for Tenerife wines plummeted in the 18th century as connoisseurs found a new love in the vino of France and Portugal. Tenerife continued to export its wines over the centuries, but nowadays, it seems that America and Portugal appear to be the main recipients.

SHHH! It’s a secret...
By Vanessa Vee IF you have never heard of a “Secret Hotel”, I will give you a brief insight into exactly what they are!
Sounds a tad ironic, doesn´t it? But years ago, I took the plunge and gave them a try because I had heard so much about them. So did you know that even the very best hotels cannot fill their rooms 100% of the time, so someone devised a cunning plan a few years ago to sell their excess beds at deep discounts. But if we all knew about these price cuts, especially their competitors, their reputation might suffer, and the full-paying guests were unlikely to be best pleased. So even though these rooms are sold, the specific hotel name is not publicised. You can’t always get a better deal, even if you actually book directly with the hotel. In fact, you know how some hotels have a lowest online price guarantee. If you check the small print, more often than not they say specifically that they will not match “secret” hotel deals. So this is how it works. You can define the area you want to stay or, if you want to be daring, you can broaden your horizon. You select your dates, area, then board basis and star rating and, sometimes, you can
even select your room type. You will be told of all the facilities on offer, like, for example, if the hotel has a spa, how many swimming pools and number of rooms. You will then be given rough distances from local amenities, such as the beach or points of interest. Then, and only then, will the name of the hotel be revealed - once the booking and payment have been confirmed! In return for taking this “risk”, you will receive some fabulous money-saving offers. So even if you are sticking to your budget, you are actually getting a lot more for your money. The only downside is that if your hotel is really not what you want, there is no possible refunds or exchange. The last one I did was in central London, and we were overjoyed at getting a 5-star hotel on Oxford Street for just £90, two of us, bed and breakfast. The room was a typical of a city-centre hotel. In other words, not that spacious, But the room and facilities were marvellous, including the Bang and Olufsen TV. Another one I experienced was in Dublin City, and that was also fantastic. I paid about £40, yet the recommended rate, we discovered, was at least double! Of course, this option is not suitable for everybody because there are fewer options and less information about the room. If you have particu-
lar preferences, such as hot tub on the balcony, salon-grade hairstraighteners or elliptical machine in the fitness room, then you should probably go with a regular-priced room. At least, then, you know you are getting exactly what you paid for, and everything you require. It’s up to you to take the plunge, based on the few details provided ... but what an adventure! Because these are unsold hotel rooms, they are usually cheaper for last-minute deals, so you need to make your booking quite close to your trip. These are available on all durations and not just mini-breaks or stop-overs. You can use these for a fortnight’s holiday, and they are also available worldwide, and not just in Tenerife and the UK. Tenerife Sunshine Travel permanently offer the “secret hotel” option on worldwide hotels. For May, they are offering four nights in Fuertaventura, Caleta de Fueste, in a Junior suite, 4-star superior hotel on an all-inclusive basis, including return flights from Tenerife and return resort transfers, for just 600 euros for two people. For this, and dozens of other options, please contact the Tenerife Sunshine Travel Team on 922 751 867, or call into their Travel Centre at Cristian Sur in Los Cristianos. Make your hair healthy and hearty
I AM often asked what can be done to promote healthy hair what can be put on it to encourage more growth? And what can be done to repair damage to all types of hair?
I’m not a believer in any quick remedy or magic potion that will create a miracle to solve a magnitude of hair problems. So what’s best for you and your hair, and what can you do to boost its shine, strength and overall well-being? You may actually want to give your hair a break from all the stresses and strains you could be putting it through. And the best way to start is, as always, from the inside. So why not do what many do and buy a pack from your local chemist? Something that claims to stop hair loss, thickens hair and gives you that lustrous gloss You could, I suppose, but I don’t believe that buying some “cure” from the shelf is really going to do your hair or your pocket - any favours. So where do you start? You need to put your hair through a DETOX ... something that will work not only on the inside but show on the outside as well. Okay, so let’s start with food. Yes, that stuff you put inside you that
should provide you with all the nourishment you and your hair need. If it’s goodness that you put in, only good things will show outwardly, so what are the top things you can eat to give your hair that boost from within? Oily fish is a great source of omega3, which is a hair-friendly vitamin, as well as any form of Vitamin A that’s available in the form of carrots or pumpkins. Eggs provide you with zinc, selenium, sulphur, and iron, which strengthen the hair from within. Spinach is great for iron and Vitamin C, all of which will help your locks. Even Greek yoghurt, which contains a good helping of Vitamin B5 and Vitamin D, will sort out your lack-lustre tresses, as well as cottage cheese or low-fat cheese. All of which go towards putting your hair back on track. So once you’ve got your diet sorted, now for the outside. Stick to natural products and never for supermarket-branded ones.
Read the rear of all products your putting on your hair, and stay away from Panthenolbased items that will coat your hair, leaving a residue that can weeks to remove. If you are going to look after the inside of your hair, then it stands to reason that you take care of what your putting on it, too. Drink plenty of bottled water - at least three litres a day to cleanse your insides so that these new ingredients can work to their fullest. This includes staying away from alcohol. It dehydrates, not only you but your skin and hair. If you get told to use a particular remedy from the pharmacy, then you’ll be paying a small fortune. Try instead to work from the inside to give your hair a good basis to grow well and look its best. DETOX isn’t just something you go through to rid yourself of inner toxins. It is also a way to give you back the hair you once may have had.

By Monica Dyson THE Pope, seemingly, upset many people recently when he decreed that couples who decided not to have children were selfish.
“A greedy generation choosing not to procreate,” was how he put it! Last month was Mother’s Day and, of course, a bitter-sweet day for many women who wish, desperately, that they could have a child. However, throughout the ages, women haven’t always been able to make their own choices, and one of those was whether they wanted to have a child. Having a family was once a pre-requisite of getting married. That was the way it worked. You did not have a baby out of wedlock. “Having to get married” or “shotgun weddings” were common terms, and if you did become an unmarried mother, it was frowned upon, probably up to the Seventies. As soon as you did get married, if not pregnant, the questions started, not only to you but to family alike. “When is
17th April - 23rd April 2015
No kidding ... not all women want children
your so and so starting a family?” It was relentless, and carried on for years until, if you hadn’t managed to produce, it was thought that you had something wrong “down there” and became an object of pity. Those who stated publicly that they didn’t intend to have children were faced with a barrage of advice. “You’ll regret it when you’re older.” “It’s because you haven’t found the right person” or “You’ll have trouble finding any man who will want you”, not to mention the accusation that you are being downright selfish. And the well-used phrase is trotted out about “biological clocks”. These days, the average household is composed of 2.3 persons compared with 50 years ago when it was 5.0 and before that, the sky was the limit as regards the number of children in a family. In Victorian times, a large family was the norm. In my mother’s Irish/Catholic family, almost all her siblings produced at least four children. She let the side down, having managed to produce just two!
Today, young people can make informed choices about whether to have children or not, and it is nobody’s business except theirs. However, those who choose to remain childless feel they are always having to justify it. And, of course, there will always be the men who feel rejected and that it’s a personal affront! Novelist Fay Weldon said recently that, in her opinion: “To have a baby can be perilous, but not to have them, equally so!” It seems that she doesn’t always think that a woman who chooses not to have a family is doing the right
thing, although, as she is a feminist, that may well be a bit confusing. She says that it is after the age of 65 that the childless state becomes less attractive. The career that was all-important when you were young? Well, someone else is now doing the job. Friends have drifted away, social life is practically non-existent, and the nights are lonely. You have a dog or cat, but it’s not really the same as a family, and all those things you thought you would do in retirement become difficult, with films too noisy and foreign sun too hot. Many young women
today seem to be scared of making the decision to have a child, stating reasons like “Suppose I lost my job?” or “You have to be rich to afford a child, and “What about my figure?” Or even “I’m not brave enough … I’d have to stop drinking and smoking and I’d put on weight!” Sometimes, they genuinely do not want a baby but are pressured into it by family, religion or their partner. If you are in the public eye, it becomes even more difficult to convince people that you are not pregnant. Female stars are targeted in gossip magazines,
often with cameras focused on their stomachs - and woe betide that they should be displaying an ounce or two of fat. It has to be a baby! Helen Mirren was quite vocal about her problems with those who seem to resent her childless state, calling it seemingly the “last female taboo”, She states, quite emphatically, that she has no maternal instinct whatever, with the female author Lionel Shriver stating that children are untidy, ungrateful and take up too much of your time! The contraception pill, introduced in 1961, gave a choice for the first time to women who did not want a family for whatever reason, often because, having a good job, they decided to postpone a family until later in life, and then never found the right time, should they have wanted to. Although I am so pleased that my son and daughter-in-law loved babies so much that they now have three small sons - and I can’t deny the joy that they bring to our lives - I do feel that we should stop making the voluntary childless feel as if they have some guilty secret and are forced to justify it to the rest of the world. Being childless through choice is on the rise - not just in the UK but worldwide - with 25% of women of childbearing age choosing not to have children. And really, it’s up to them. They should not be thought of as selfish. Children should be loved and wanted … and not produced because it’s expected.

THERE’S one fashion that never goes away here and that’s flipflops. And guys here tend to shy away from sandals especially the ones that come with the added socks.
We seem to see the same varieties around all the time, when there are so many stylish ones available. With the big increase in online shopping, and so many UK stores delivering here, there is no excuse to be hobbling around in the same old pair, week in, week out! If you are going to be wearing these on a regular basis, then try to pick at least three pairs with which you can alternate. A basic guide for guys may be a pair in brown, black and, maybe, white. These can be teamed up with many of your favourite outfits. You will want to use them - from going to work to the beach, and even on a night out in the summer - so pick ones that are comfortable, yet stylish. Don’t go for the thinsoled variety if you’re going to be wearing them all day. This is really bad for your posture as they give no support to your feet. Instead, look for the thicker-soled variety - still fashionable but kinder on those soles. This type of footwear rarely lasts long, so don’t go overboard on a pair if you are just going to the beach in them. If it’s something more
stylish for wearing at night, then splash out a little more as they are going to be around for a few years. Yes, I know they are just flip-flops, but try them on before you buy them because too big or too small look ridiculous. And don’t forget to put some trainers on when driving in Tenerife because driving in flipflops is illegal (honestly), so you ladies watch out as well! Choose wisely as to when and where you put this type of footwear on because wearing them to a smart occasion, no matter how well you are dressed, is hardly appealing. Flip-flops are casual/smart casual and shouldnt really be worn if you are trying to impress, or if you’re working in an office. If you must have those feet on show, make sure they are worth having on show. Keep those feet in check … no overgrown nails or hard skin! All in all, this footwear is a must in Tenerife, but try to get the look right - and don’t be seen out in the ones you bought when you arrived here all those years ago.

By Sue McDonald THERE is a lot of property available to rent or buy at the moment, and it really is important to look at how you can make yours stand out from the crowd.
After all, you get just one chance to make a first impression, and many people will be scrolling through an internet page, or looking in an estate agent´s window at properties similar to your own. A minor revamp of a property can make an enormous difference, and for a very small budget. One management company client recently reported an increase of 50% in future bookings for one of her properties because of a some changes costing a few hundred euros, and changing the website photos. Very often, simplification is the name of the game here. Some apartments that are stuck in a time warp of pine furniture, matching fabrics and swags and tail curtains may take a bit more work, but sometimes all it needs is a few bright throws and cushions and more modern pictures to lift a property into the current day. Even if a more extensive revamp is required, the budget needed may be less than you think. Sun curtains now come in fabric in a myriad of colours, so you don’t need two pairs of curtains, ie the plastic ones plus something to look nice. You can also save by reupholstering a sofa if it is in good structural condition, rather than replacing it. If you have a sofa bed, this is an economy well worth considering, as many of the sofa beds we sold 20 years ago are still going strong. Furniture can be replaced or sprayed to make it look more modern, with cleaner lines and a less cluttered appearance. Bedrooms are particularly easy to dress because there generally isn’t that much furniture in there! A bedspread in
17th April - 23rd April 2015
First impressions matter! a bright colour, with a couple of luxurious toning cushions and a modern abstract picture may be all that is required to make the room look fabulous for your marketing photo. As an example, Deco Nuevo recently revamped a property in Royal Palm, where the original wood furniture, while a bit dated, is still of excellent quality. Reupholstering the busy orange patterned sofa with a more discreet beige material, with some cream suncurtains, a few exciting cushions in jewel tones, and a mirror over the sofa was all it needed to make the room look completely different. Some modern abstract pictures to pick out the accent colours were the finishing touch, and all well within a modest budget. In this same property, we kept the beds which were relatively new and in good condition, but provided new headboards in faux leather. To keep costs down, we installed plain cream bedspreads, with runners and cushions in a gorgeous but rather expensive material, and again, picked out the accent colour in some modern pictures. The curtains were quite neutral, so tie backs to match the runners were all it took to tie everything together. The end result was more luxurious, tasteful and modern, and at a fraction of the cost of replacement. If you are interested in selling or renting your property, and rely on photos to do make the first impression for you, consider a revamp to give you a head start. You can’t forget Popeye food By Val Sainsbury EATING just one portion of leafy greens a day, such as spinach, could stave off dementia - well, it certainly didn’t do Popeye any harm!
Researchers at Chicago’s Rush University evaluated the diet and mental ability of around 950 older people every year for up to a decade. Those taking part, who had an average age of 81 years, had 19 tests to assess their mental function and identified, from a list of 144 items, what food and drinks featured in their diet.
Those adults who ate leafy green vegetables such as spinach a n d kale
once o r twice a day experienced significantly less cognitive decline than those who did not, even when other factors such as education, exercise and family history
of dementia were taken into account. On average, participants w h o a t e
greens halted their mental decline by an average of 11 years, the researchers revealed this week at Experimental Biology Conference in Boston, America.
Lead researcher Martha Clare Morris said: “Losing one’s memory or cognitive abilities is one of the biggest fears for people as they get older. Since declining cognitive ability is central to Alzheimer’s disease and dementias, increasing consumption of green, leafy vegetables could offer a simple, affordable and non-invasive way of potentially protecting your brain from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.” Morris said that the benefits of leafy greens were probably linked to their high levels of vitamins and nutrients, such as vitamin K, lutein, folate and betacarotene. A previous study in Sweden linked spinach to improved muscle strength.

Motoring
By Emma at Motorworld
WE would all like to walk into a showroom and have unlimited funds to buy any car that took our fancy.
Unfortunately, this situation for most is rare, and in truth, we tend to have a tight budget. You might be tempted by posters or adverts for new cars at what appear to be reasonable costs when compared with second-hand cars. But these prices are usually false because there are often many extra, obligatory add-ons, which can add substantial costs. For example, most new motors these days - Ford, Kia, Nissan, etc - will not be sold with a spare wheel and tyre, which is an essential part of a car, whether it’s new or not! That’s because the manufacture is obligated to provide you with a puncture-repair kit. and
17th April - 23rd April 2015
Going spare over a new car
not necessarily a spare wheel, tyre and tools. Another cost not normally included is the price for the matriculation/registration, and this will be calculated and added on to t h e initial price. This is actually t h e cost o f
registering the car on the road and obtaining a registration number from Tráfico, all of which takes time and money which the dealer will pass on to the customer.
Also, the attractive price you see displayed is normally for a basic model, without electric mirrors, CD player, etc. and lots of little extras, as mentioned, which all add euros to the price. On top
of all that, you will often find that if you’re paying cash, the price is often more than if you purchase on finance! This is because the dealer will get commission, or a bonus, for using the company’s finance house. Then, you will have t o
pay IGIC – again, a cost that is your responsibility, and which you cannot claim back. And if you want an automatic car, you will probably have to wait a while as these are rarely available that readily. Even worse, if you’ve set your heart on a specific make and model, you may find it is not made for the Spanish market and you will have to reconsider. This is because a lot of people look at and testdrive their chosen cars in the UK before
moving to Tenerife or when on holiday here. So, as you can see, buying new is not always that attractive. My advice is to beware, and make sure you ask all the questions before you part with any money. When buying a secondhand car from a dealer, you will often find that you will get a better deal in the end because most traders include the cost of the transfer in the price The car will have a spare wheel and, although some will offer finance, it is usually cheaper and easier to have a personal loan from your bank if you fulfil all its criteria. On a second-hand car, you can often find a higher specification of car, as the person who initially purchased it will have paid all the exorbitant costs and, in many cases, will have a better stereo, with blue tooth for a phone, parking sensors … and various other items.

The Cucumber Case
On a sunny morning, a greengrocer places 200 kilograms of cucumbers in cases in front of his shop. At that moment, the cucumbers are 99% water. In the afternoon, it turns out that it is the hottest day of the year, and as a result, the cucumbers dry out a little bit. At the end of the day, the greengrocer has not sold a single cucumber, and the cucumbers are only 98% water.
The Question: How many kilograms of cucumbers has the greengrocer left at the end of the day?

The surface of a cylinder with an open upper side is: O = pi×R2+2×pi×R×H, where R is the radius of the cylinder and H is the height. The volume is given, V = 30 = pi×R2×H liters (or dm3). The surface can then be written as O = pi×R2+2×V/R. If you take the first derivative of R and look where this derivative equals 0 you get Rmin = (V/pi)1/3. So the minimum surface is O = pi×Rmin2+2×pi×Rmin×H = 3×pi1/3×V2/3 or about 42.42 dm2.

By Roscoe All good things come to an end but there was no shame in losing for the first time in 9 matches at a fine looking Alaves.
The hosts are going great guns and they moved in sight of the play off’s with another home win in a match that Tenerife will feel they could have got something from. There really wasn’t much between the two sides and a glance at the table shows how tight this league is. The difference was a fine goal on the stroke of half time from Manuel Lanzarote, a player Tenerife have been close to signing in the past. His third goal of the season gave Alaves the points, but Tenerife had their moments. There is no doubt that CDT are a better outfit with Diego Ifran and he was sorely missed. His replacement Aridane

looks certain to leave in the summer and he hardly put in a shift last weekend. Die hard fans will be stunned to hear that his most likely destination is England’s Championship... I know! The defeat means an end to any late charge for promotion and the Chicken Little’s will be looking down saying that a relegation battle is still a possibility. Whilst that is true, it’s a big 6 point cushion Tenerife has with just 9 matches to go. Manager Raul Agne is in a positive mood “Every year is different and I am not one for stats. Normally you are safe with between 47 and 51 points but it varies. We will be fine. When I came to Tenerife as a rival it wasn’t easy. And to win away from home is never easy. It’s the same when we now play away. Travel is not like Mallorca, which is easy to get around and you can be on the peninsula in half an hour. We have a small
handicap.” This weekend Llagostera have to make the 150 minute flight and they will arrive in high spirits. They are ten games undefeated and are a mind boggling 9th. To put that in perspective they were bottom in December. They are the smallest team in this league by some distance in terms of wealth, budget and attendance. But like Eibar last year, they have some hungry players. Men, and in some cases boys, with points to prove. They even have an ex-Tenerife player in Juanjo who was let go last summer. He is still a little bitter about it “I was surprised to go. I thought I did well when I was selected last season and I felt I had something to offer. But as one door closes another opens and it’s been a lot of fun at Llagostera.” The lanky striker was the odd man out when the club decided to keep fellow beanpole Aridane. He
wasn’t the worst player in history and will be fired up this weekend. Tenerife are making Position
an effort to break the 10,000 barrier and have revealed a variety of offer prices for this weekPoints

Nandu setback soon overcome Nandu v Rugby Club Cornella
Nandu v Enginyers
AFTER a difficult four weeks of fund-raising and organising, Nandu finally touched down in Barcelona with six wins out of six and on top of the table. There was a sense of nerves among the boys as they tried to maintain their unbeaten record. But those nerves proved their undoing. The match started positively, with physical tackles coming left, right and centre. For the first 20 minutes, the boys were entrenched on the Cornella 22-metre line, but basic errors and a lack of composure proved their undoing and they failed to cross the line or come away with any points. The momentum was switched to the opposition, whose ferocity and physicality in the contact area proved difficult for the youngsters to deal with, and the home side were winning the battle for the gain-line. Penalties were conceded for infringement, and the opposition capitalised on this and made quick breaks, catching the Nandu boys offside again. This resulted in yellow cards for three players, and at one point they were down to 13. However, Nandu never gave up and during that period, the boys scored seven unanswered points, with Alessandro crossing for his maiden try. The rest of match was an arm wrestle for control. The boys managed to score another try, although two further errors from penalties and a line-out resulted in the Cornella boys crossing twice more. An uncharacteristic defeat for Nandu.
JUST 24 hours later, the difference in the mental approach to the game was so apparent. The boys travelled to the match with confidence and positivity after returning their focus - playing rugby: to enjoy it! The Enginyers were the only team left in the league to have won every match and were going to prove a difficult opposition. However, the team rallied from the previous game and from the first whistle, they were in absolute control. The forwards started strongly, dominated the ruck and the contact area with a master-class in how to secure quick ball for the backs. Mateo was the conductor of an orchestra; showing an intelligence in reading the game and causing havoc in the opposition defensive line. The set-pieces also created a platform for attack, with Gregor and the pack dominating every area. Gabriel Cordoba put his opposite prop under continuous pressure at the scrum in only his third game in that position. All nerves had vanished and they were playing open, exciting rugby. Chema kicked with a composure befitting of a player who had played many years of competitive rugby, and Josh Vaughan was immense. After playing rugby for just nine months, Josh has become an instrumental player in the team, and hit every line-out with accuracy and precision. He carried the ball and hit ruck after ruck as he epitomised the Nandu effort. This was a complete performance from kick-off to the final whistle. A final 43-10 score against the strongest opposition in the league proved just how good they were.

Our presentation party!
THE sun has almost set on another darts’ league season, but there is still some more to play, and some more lemonade to be supped! And that will take place tonight (Friday) at the Showtime venue in Las Americas as the annual presentation night shindig brings the darting fraternity together for a well-deserved blow-out. In fact, the event has become the stuff of legends ... and the stuff of Saturday-morning headaches! As usual, the Showtime hospitality will include fine dining, fine entertainment and, maybe, a couple of shandies ... but definitely more darts’ action in the shape of the Memorial Troph finals. The qualifying rounds were played at Nauta Bar last week, and the
finals will be played under the bright lights on the big stage. Premier League Mitch (Phoenix Bar) v Jonnhy (Phoenix Bar) Division 1 Jamie (Ourplace Playboys) v Serhii (Pas O Nadas), Dennis (The Palms) v Kelvin (Waterfall Warriors) Ladies: Karen (Bar 180 B) v Julie (Naughty Nautas). Many thanks to Nauta Bar’s Debbie and Ray for staging the event, and for their fine hospitality. Of course, all this leads us up to the highlight of the evening as we reward those teams and individuals, and give out a host of shiny trophies, which have been won throughout the campaign. And these are those ... deep breath!

Shuffling towards victory AS we edge ever closer to the end of this season’s Premier League, time is running out for our managers in the Oasis Fm Fantasy Football League. It could be a little late for shuffling your pack in terms of transfers, but it might be worth having a look at the remaining fixtures. Several teams have an easy run, which may provide an opportunity for their strikers and midfielders to score, so it is worth thinking about. Most results went to
form last weekend, with one or two exceptions but, after their dismantling of Man City, you’d S have thought Man Utd would have had some high point-scorers. But they didn’t! Liverpool and Crystal Palace provided the most players for the pointscoring team of the week with two each. The rest of the team came from Aston Villa, Southampton, West Ham, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd and Man City. With regards the Oasis Fm league, nothing has
changed. Gordon Wilson’s Coffee Shop Karma are still the team to catch, but their lead is by no means insurmountable. Nick Abbott’s Boomtown Rabz are still in with a shout, just 10 points back, while Ray Malone’s Inter Malone are 29 points adrift in third spot. But we have seen big point swings before so, with just a handful of games left, it is still all to play for. Team of the week is Lesley Bradley’s Tiptoppers with an overhaul points haul of 74, the
star performer was Sergio Aguero with his two goals against Man Utd, as captain he returned a decent 24 points to the total. Over at Oasis Fm Towers, John Zammit had a great chance to narrow the gap on Roscoe, but he chose to go with two up front and didn’t replace Diego Costa, who was injured. Roscoe’s team underperformed and, had John tinkered, he may well have made up some ground. But he is now 50 points behind, I won-
der what he will use his wooden spoon for? The battle for bragging rights has swung again, and Adi Benson has
moved back to the top of this mini league, opening up a 15-point gap over Chris Elkington. This is going to be close!

A real relegation battle
IT was back to league action again this week in the Direct Telecom Pool League … and although it is not quite done and dusted at the top, things are tight at the bottom of Division One.
That last spot is occupied by Tenerife Hammers C, who went to Los Cristianos for their game against Dreamers A hoping they could come away with some points. Things started well for them, with Heineken taking the first frame, only for Gav and Mark T to hit back. However, Ken H shocked Tommy and it was 2-2 with all too play for. At this point, the wheels fell off for Hammers C. who lost the next eight frames and suffered a heavy defeat. The Peacocks, just above them in the table, were also hopeful as they hosted Exiles B. A win could have moved up the league and got them to within a point of their opponents. As expected, the clash was close - most frames going to the wire. But Peacocks just didn’t have enough gas in the tank and Exiles dragged themselves over the line for a victory to ease their own relegation worries. Terrace Bar A are just about keeping their heads above water, but they are running
out of games. They have three left to play - against teams in the top half of the table. Terrace are two points clear of The Peacocks and three clear of Hammers C, but they have two and three games in hand respectively over Terrace A which means the Amarilla Golf team need their opponents to lose every game between now and the end of the season. Terrace A faced The Phoenix on Tuesday, but when you are at the bottom fighting, sometimes you get no luck. It it was a close , with most frames going to the black ball. But try as they might, it would just not roll in for them as they recorded another loss. Terrace Bar B are not fairing much better after showing some early-season form. They took themselves off to Los Abrigos on Tuesday, hoping to pick up some points and get their season back on track. But their hosts had other ideas. Phoenix Potters are always a difficult team to face, and that proved to be the case as they never let the visitors get into it. Palms Bar A had been in the mix for a third-place finish, but a couple of poor recent results have put paid to that. They had the difficult task of playing Gaffers A and really fancied themselves as being the first team to inflict a loss on their opponents. But it just wasn’t their night, and they

gifted the win to Gaffers. Yet I’m sure they will be kicking themselves. The 9-3 scoreline doesn’t reflect the closeness of the match. Despite the Gaffers A win, Tenerife Hammers A still occupy top spot and made sure they stayed there with a dominant home display. Waterfall Rebels had put together a string of good results, but they didn’t really show up, allowing the home team to rack up frame after frame. They will be thankful they to have managed one, though, to avoid the whitewash. In Division Two, it looks like Sporting Jester A will take the title and promotion, unless they suffer a massive collapse. But the fight for second and promotion is not so clear as three of the teams fighting for the spot have three games in hand over Bluebell, who occupy the position. All Bluebell A can do is keep winning, and against Picasso’s A, it could have been a potential banana skin. Pi-
casso’s are capable of playing good pool, but Bluebell took it in their stride and made sure they put three points on the board. Waterfall Jokers, in third, welcomed James Place to the bar, but they knew they were in for a tough game as their opponents had ended the unbeaten run of Sporting Jesters the previous week. The game started well for the hosts and they quickly moved into a 3-1 lead. In the next section, it was honours even, and the match was poised at 5-3. The Jokers were out of the traps quickly and, before James Place knew it, they had taken three frames and the win. The Jokers’ Mark was the top performer with three wins, but James can hold his head up, despite his team losing, after getting the better of Jonesy in all three of their games. Inn The Pink B, who are chasing, visited The Crown, fast becoming one of the favourite
venues in the league (something to do with giant pizzas). The league newcomers won last week, but this time they couldn’t replicate that form, even after winning the first two games. The Pink proved too strong for them as they moved through the gears, and it wasn’t long before the match was over. This left Gaffers B needing a win to keep pace with their promotion rivals. They faced Sporting Jester B, and although the Jesters have had a few good results recently, it was never going to be their night. Gaffers, in fine form, quickly worked through the frames and before the Jesters had time to blink, the points were wrapped up. Hoppy’s Bar are aiming for a top half of the table finish and, with a win over Next Door, they knew they could move into position. But Next Door have some good players and were certainly not go-
ing to roll over. It was a tight game and, over the first eight frames, nothing could separate them, leaving it nicely poised going into the final section. Next Door took the first two to give them a 6-4 lead, but Ken beat Steve to make it 6-5 and it came down to Clive to grab a point for his team - or Craig to give Next Door victory. It was a cagey affair, with neither player wanting to make a mistake, and in the end it was Craig who sunk the black and earned three points for his team. Tenerife Pool Tables, who have moved up the table in recent weeks, will have fancied their chances as they hosted Dreamers B, who are below them in the league. But the visitors were the better team and quickly picked up frames. The games were close, though, and it could have gone either way. But eventually, Dreamers held their nerve and took the win by the narrowest of margins.

Six of the best!
By Adi Benson WE have now taken another step closer to the season’s end, and we have just about six games to play.
A couple of weeks ago, everything was looking clear-cut in terms of teams at the top and the bottom. But the pressure is starting to build, and teams are starting to wobble. Stoke v Southampton Stoke, who have had a good season, will be happy with the progress they have made under Mark Hughes. They are difficult to beat at home and come into this game on the back of a good performance. They were unlucky not to have taken all three points, after having two goals disallowed. Southampton got back to winning ways and, for a few hours, moved into fifth spot. Graziano Pellè got himself back on the score-sheet after a goal drought, and Saints will hope he can put together a run of form until the end of the season. Prediction: Away win Leicester v Swansea The Foxes showed real fighting quality last weekend after coming from behind at West Brom to take three vital points, which has given them a glimmer of survival. They need to keep this momentum going and this is a good home fixture for them to do just that, if they can make a fast start and grab an early goal, they can take the points again. It has been an excellent season for Swansea, but I don’t think they can finish any higher than eighth because they are seven points behind Spurs. But it still represents their best Premier League finish. Leicester will be a tough opponent, and the Swans have to be at their best to get a result. Prediction: Draw Everton v Burnley Everton have put a string of results together over the last
few games, but it is too little, too late as they are going to finish in the bottom half of the table. There are also big clubs starting to sniff around their better players, and if they were to lose these in the summer, next season could be a real struggle. They need a strong finish to try to convince players to stay. With Hull and QPR not in action this weekend, Burnley know that if they can get a win here, they will move out of the bottom three and put real pressure on the teams around them. They are an honest team and have won fans over this season with the way they play. But this is a must-win game for them. Prediction: Away win C Palace v West Brom Palace are flying and have moved up the table nicely, even eyeing a top-10 finish. They have quality in the side and are scoring goals, making life difficult for their opponents - and they are good at home. Bolasie is grabbing the attention of bigger clubs and is a huge player for them. If they can hold on to him in the summer. there should be no relegation battle next season. West Brom had been going really well in recent games but the wheels appear to have come off. They will have regrouped this week and gone back to basics in defence. They will have their hands full, though, with this Palace team, but if they can keep it tight, they may earn a draw. Prediction: Home win
Chelsea v Man Utd Chelsea are still seven points clear at the top and looked to have the league sown up. But in recent games, they have not been at their best. This will be a tough game for them, especially with a fixture at in-form Arsenal coming up. If Chelsea drop points in these two games, it could blow the title race wide open, so what’s the betting they park the bus? Man Utd have hot form at the perfect time, and confidence is skyhigh after wins against Liverpool and Man City. They will be up for this fixture and know that another win here gives them an outside title chance. Momentum in football is everything, and it is with them at the minute. Prediction: Draw Man City v West Ham City are going backward and, from looking comfortable for a second-place finish, they are now in danger of missing out on the top four altogether. They need to get back to
winning ways, and they need to put down a marker to show that the last four losses have just been a blip. But I’m not sure they are mentally strong enough at the minute. West Ham have been out of sorts in the last few games and need a decent performance and this would be the ideal game in which to do it. If Stewart Downing can replicate his earlyseason form, he can cause City problems as they do not seem to be able to handle teams attacking them with pace. Prediction: Away win Newcastle v Spurs Without sounding like a cracked record, Newcastle have been off the pace for the last two months. The players do not seem to want to play for John Carver, and he doesn’t seem to know what he is doing. It will be interesting to see who they appoint as a fulltime manager come the summer. Whoever it is will have his work cut out. Spurs will be hurt after losing at home against Aston Villa last weekend, but that was always on the cards, w i t h Tim
Sherwood out to prove a point to the club directors. They need to re-group and get back to winning ways if they are still to qualify for the Europa League, They need European football next season to attract players. Prediction: Away win Reading v Arsenal (FA Cup Semi-final) It has been a great cup run for Reading this and they have rightly been rewarded with a Wembley appearance. However, even the most romantic of football fans will not see them going any further. They are 18th in the Championship and are on a poor run of form, with two losses and three draws in their last six fixtures. That being said, this is the FA Cup and we have seen upsets galore in the past, so could this be the biggest yet? Arsenal, in contrast, have moved into second spot in the Premier League and have won six out of six. Well, eight out of eight if you want to see how good their current form really is. Their defence is not the best, but they have the attacking players to hurt a n y b o d y. You get t h e
feeling that Sanchez, Ozil and Giroud will turn the Reading defence inside out. Prediction: Arsenal win Aston Villa v Liverpool (FA Cup Semi-final) A win at Spurs mean Villa will be confident coming into this game, and in recent seasons they have been somewhat of a bogey team for Liverpool. They have got quite a few injuries, especially in defence, and that could prove pivotal. They know they will have to keep it tight over the first 20-30 minutes. But if they can keep Liverpool out in this period, they will grow into the game and, with Benteke scoring for fun, maybe a final appearance is on the cards. Liverpool like to attack with pace, and the large Wembley pitch will suit their style of play. They like to retain possession and, on this surface, their job will be a little easier. They performed well enough against Newcastle, but their opponents didn’t really put up much of a fight. But this game will be more difficult. They have adopted a formation which sees them play three across the back, and the defenders will need to be on their toes as Villa have pace in their attack in the form of Agbonlahor. Prediction: Liverpool win
