Greenpeace issue environment alert Continued from front. Last week, Russian ship the Oleg Naydenov, spewed 1,400 tonnes of fuel into the Atlantic after sinking 15 miles off the coast of Maspalomas. The vessel had caught fire the previous weekend and was towed into port, only for the fire to intensify. She was then moved 15 miles out to sea and deliberately scuttled because experts believed that any oil would travel south and away from the shore. However, despite most of the spillage moving as anticipated, some of the oil separated from the main spill and was moved back towards Gran Canaria on strong tides. A small slick has moved closer to the south and west coast over the last few days and it is understood that it could reach beaches as early as today (Friday). The Steering Committee of the Contingency Plan for Marine Pollution Canarias (PECMAR) has been in place for the last week. At the time of the sinking, the level was 0, which is the lowest, but yesterday (Thursday) the emergency level was raised to 2, which is when the spill could affect the coastline. This is the medium vulnerability ranking. Greenpeace has been quick to react, and its boat has been tracking the spill and the environmental damage all week. Along with marine pollution experts from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) they are in the area where the Oleg Naydenov sank. In a statement, Greenpeace said: “We are here to witness the state of the spill and clean up operations, which are being carried out. “We are collaborating with the ULPGC in sampling the characteristics of the fuel and contamination level. The sooner the char-

acterisation of fuel is known, the sooner we will know the toxicity on wildlife and ecosystems. We urge the government to do all they can as quickly as possible.” Greenpeace revealed yesterday (Thursday) that the environment near the beach at Veneguera was under threat. The area, one of the few spaces left undeveloped on Gran Canaria, is included in the Natura 2000 network, protected by the European Union because of the presence of turtles and the endangered bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). Greenpeace flew over the area yesterday and reported that the spill currently has three fronts: the area of the sinking of the Oleg Naydenov; the larger or main oil , which is nearly 200km south-west of Gran Canaria, and the third area, which is just off the coastal area of Mogan. Meanwhile, Jesus Cisneros, professor of marine pollution at the

physics department at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, called for immediate action. “Those who best know the environment of this area and specialise in these waters, know that the processes of contamination has begun.” Greenpeace spokes-

man Luis Ferreirim said: “To our eyes, and those who are concerned with the disaster, what we are seeing is just the tip of the iceberg. We demand strong measures to minimise the impacts of the spill - and as soon as possible.” The Minister in charge, Ana Pastor, has been in

Gran Canaria since the Oleg Naydenov sunk last week, and she has been co-ordinating the cleaning. She confirmed that the fuel slick was just a few kilometres from the coast of Veneguera, in Mogan, and that it has an area of around four miles.

Addressing the media at a press conference, she told them: “Although there is no evidence yet of whether the slick has come from the Russian trawler which sunk 15 miles South of Gran Canaria, it is something we are working on. I am told that there are small patches of fuel, trash heaps and such.” She added that experts were examining the slick to ascertain how much damage it could cause. The slick’s presence was discovered by a Canarian Government helicopter, sent to explore the problem and search for wildlife which could be affected. Upon discovery of the slick, the Punta Salinas and the Guardamar Talia ships were dispatched to the area. They specialise in the containment of such oil spillages, and they linked up with the Luz de Mar. This vessel was the first to arrive and, as we go to print, it has already extracted 287 cubic metres of fuel. A fourth ship, the Miguel de Cervantes, is expected to join in the clean-up today (Frida)y. While there is a rush to prevent any fuel from hitting the beaches and dry land and, of course, minimise any damage to the marine population, the blame game has begun. It is still not clear why the Oleg Naydenov was ordered to be sunk when some reports suggest the fire on the vessel was containable and the boat was “safe” in port. Local officials are demanding answers to “some key issues which have not been clarified” and are baffled that the ship was allowed to leave Puerto de la Luz. Then there is the question of why the ship, which caught fire off the west coast of Fuerteventura, was, ultimately, allowed to sink off the south coast of Gran Canaria.

Captura

24th April - 30th April 2015

strikes again

Two suspected drug traffickers who featured in the Operation Captura fugitive campaign have been arrested in the space of 24 hours.

Paul Monk, aged 54, from Romford, Essex, was captured at his luxury four bedroom villa in Javea, Alicante, following an operation involving the Guardia Civil and the National Crime Agency. When armed officers swooped, Monk was directing workmen who were laying a marble patio around his swimming pool. An imitation firearm with silencer and 125,000 euros were recovered. On Wednesday morning Jayson McDonald, aged 37, from Acton, was apprehended as part of a separate joint investigation with the Dutch authorities. Officers found McDonald hiding under a bed at an apartment in Amsterdam. McDonald had been hiding in Spain but it is believed he based himself in the Netherlands after officers raided a property where he was living in the Coín area of Malaga. Both men are wanted by the Metropolitan Police on suspicion of drugs offences and are currently in custody awaiting extradition proceedings. Dave Allen, Head of the UK International Crime Bureau at the NCA, said: “Our ability to capture two of our most wanted fugitives in different countries within 24 hours demonstrates the NCA’s international reach. “Nowhere is a safe haven for British fugitives and we will continue to

work closely with our law enforcement partners across the world to track them down and return them to the UK to face justice.” Monk was allegedly involved in the handover of one kilo of cocaine in Cockfosters, London, in May 2013, and is also linked to the seizure of

24 kilos of cannabis in Colchester in October 2013. McDonald is believed to be a member of a Europe-wide organised crime network responsible for the importation of class A drugs into the UK. The arrests are less than a month after the

men were publicised through Operation Captura – the multiagency initiative between Crimestoppers, the NCA and the Spanish authorites. A total of 68 out of 86 fugitives on the list have now been caught. Shane Walford, aged 38, from Coventry, who

went on the run while on licence for manslaughter, was publicised at the same time as Monk and McDonald. He was arrested in Fuerteventura as he attempted to board a flight to Ireland. Lord Ashcroft KCMG PC, the Founder and Chair of Crimestoppers,

said: “It is a fantastic result to have three arrests within the first month of the latest appeal. It really is a testament to the hard work carried out by the NCA, Spanish authorities and Crimestoppers to ensure these fugitives are brought to justice. “This should be a warning to the remaining 18 individuals on the Captura list that they cannot hide forever. If the public continue to contact Crimestoppers and give information anonymously, I am confident we will see more arrests in the future.” Information given to Crimestoppers can help locate the fugitives on the Captura list. For those people calling from Spain there is a special freephone Spanish 900 555 111 telephone number which will be answered in the UK by Crimestoppers’ call agents. A translation service is available upon request. People can also pass on information anonymously via the Crimestoppers number 0800 555 111 or online at www.crime stoppers-uk.org

Rato lets cato out of the bag! MARIANO Rajoy, already facing an uphill struggle to retain his position as Spanish Prime Minister later this year, finds himself in yet another embarrassing position.

His ruling party, the PP, is engaged in a damage-limitation exercise after one of Europe’s most high-profile politicians was arrested on charges of tax evasion and money-laundering. Rajoy is aware that the case against Rodrigo Rato, a former Finance Minister and head of the IMF, is damaging his People’s Party prospects of remaining in control. Unfortunately, it is the latest in a series of corruption scandals involving senior PP members. Rato was arrested last

Thursday, briefly, and his home and offices were searched on Friday in connection with mismanagement at Bankia, the Spanish bank he headed after standing down from the IMF leadership in 2007. In a judicial order calling for all Rato’s bank accounts to be frozen, Judge Enrique de la Hoz attached a list of the 78 accounts Rato has spread across 13 banks. Tax inspectors have also listed 27 companies attributed to his name, or that of a family member, including his ex-wife, three children, his brother and sister and two nephews. Five of the firms are listed at Rato’s home address. One of them, the activities of which are registered as “scientific and technical”, has no employees and, in 2013, had a turnover of 38,373 euros and 1.8m euros in assets. Rato himself is listed

as the sole administrator of another firm which, allegedly, had a 2013 profit of 177,000 euros while based at his home address. Tax inspectors claim that Rato used internal billing within these companies to avoid paying income tax and VAT, estimated at 5.3m euros. Rato, Finance Minister from 1996-2004 and, as such, titular head of the tax-collecting agency, was one of 31,000 tax evaders offered amnesty in 2012. Under the controversial amnesty, condemned as illegal by the tax inspectors’ union, evaders were given the chance to “regularise” their undeclared assets with a one-off payment of 10% o f

their value, even though it is a criminal offence to hold more than 120,000 euros in undeclared assets. This was later amended to 10% of the profits, so, instead of paying 100,000 euros on a onemillion-euro asset, if it produced profits of, say, 30,000 euros a year, the evader had to pay just 10% of that profit, or 3,000 euros. Last year, Spain’s taxmen said they were in vestigating 705 of

the 31,000 amnestied evaders on suspicion of money-laundering, one of whom was Rato. Soon after the amnesty, a law was passed obliging all Spanish residents to declare assets held abroad. It was the discrepancy between this declaration and the assets he had declared under the amnesty that alerted tax officials to Rato’s alleged fraud. After he left the IMF in 2007 “for personal reasons”, Rato went on to run the Caja Madrid savings bank. As the financial crisis hit, he merged it with other banks to form Bankia, which he ran until it went bankrupt in 2012 - a year after posting profits of 309m euros. That figure was adjusted to a 3bn-euro loss a few months later, and respected financial magazine Bloomberg Businessweek voted Rato the worst

CEO of 2012. Last year, Rato was again in the news when the scandal of the “black credit cards” broke. These were company credit cards issued to 86 executives of Caja Madrid and later Bankia, and were called “black” because their owners were never billed; nor did they declare the credit as income. Between them, the executives ran up 15.5m euros in purchases. Rato himself ran up close to 100,000 euros on his card in a single year, including 3,000 euros on alcohol and 1,000 euros on shoes. Significantly, 27 of the 86 card-holders were members of the PP. Last October, a judge declared that, as CEO, Rato had civil responsibility for the credit-card abuse. But Rato denies any wrong-doing and adds that he has “faith in the judicial system”.

Tragic death of Tenerife tourist A WIGAN man, who suffered a condition which meant he could not feel pain, died after sitting in a scalding-hot bath while on holiday in Tenerife.

An inquest this week heard how Geoffrey McGrath, who had learning difficulties, suffered a series of complications following the incident a year ago. Coroner Alan Walsh said the 60-year-old’s death came “as a consequence of injuries sustained from an accident on the background of a naturallyoccurring disease”. The court heard how Mr McGrath was on holiday with his carers when he got into a scalding bath without them knowing. But the coroner said there was no neglect, praising them for the care he received. Mr McGrath, who had learning difficulties

from a young age, had lived in hospitals that distressed his family when they visited him. Around 20 years ago, he started to live in Wigan’s Beech Hill and was cared for by the charity Imagine Act and Succeed. His only surviving relative, Ken Darlington, told the court how his life had changed. “He was reborn and the carers treated him brilliantly,” he said. “He was taken to the rugby, to shows and places like Blackpool like a normal person. It was absolutely brilliant.”

Our desperate drop-out kids

SPAIN has recorded the highest EU school drop-out rates for the fourth year in a row, with 21.9% of those in the 18-24 bracket ditching education early. Men are far more likely to quit than women, with 25.6% of males terminating school early, against just 18.1% of females, according to the latest Eurostat figures. While Spain’s overall rate is just under double the EU’s average rate of 11.1%, it is still a great improvement on previous years. In 2006, a huge 30.3% of students failed to get through schooling. It has dropped since then consistently, until 2014 when the rate

was also 21.9%. The good news is that Spain boasts 42.3% of those aged 30-34 with a university education, which is marginally higher than the EU average. The Spanish Government’s aim is to persuade Spain’s young people to stay in school to reduce drop-outs to 15% by 2020. After Spain, EU countries with the highest rates of students failing to complete their education are Malta (20.4%), Romania (18.1%) and Portugal (17.4%). Croatua had the lowest drop-out rate of 5.4%. The UK sits in the middle, with 11.8% failing to see their through.

The Bolton inquest heard how Mr McGrath was taken on holiday to Tenerife’s Parque Cristobal resort in 2012 and, such was his enjoyment that, as part of his 60th birthday celebrations, it was planned for him to be taken again last year. He travelled with carers Jacqueline Meredith and Debra Carson, who arrived at the resort on 15th April last year but, unlike in 2012, the hotel had placed them on an upper floor, so the two women

asked to be relocated to the ground floor, which was arranged. In 2012, Miss Meredith had double-checked that the bath was fitted with a temperature control and, as a result, the same check wasn’t made during the second trip. On the morning of 16th April, the women awoke at around 7.15 and didn’t wake Mr McGrath. The court heard how he used to have a bath at 8am, which would be run by one of the carers. On this occasion, Mrs Carson told how she ran the bath and put the cold water in first before moving the tap to the centre, where it was warmer. While the bath was still running, she went into the other room to fetch Mr McGrath’s toiletries. She said she checked on Mr McGrath as she was walking through, and he appeared to be asleep. But, while she was

in the front room, she heard a splash and immediately went back to the bathroom, to find Mr McGrath had awoken and got in to the bath. The pair saw that his skin was red, but soon returned to a normal colour, and they assumed that everything was okay. “We thought it was a near-miss,” added Mrs Carson. “We thought it could have been serious, but when we got him out he went back to normal.” The three then enjoyed a day out before returning to the accommodation, where Mr McGrath slept between 2.30pm and 6pm. However, as the carers were getting him ready to go out for the evening meal, they noticed he had “three-inch” blisters on his legs. They immediately sought medical attention and he was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The court heard how they left Mr McGrath in hospital after his legs had been bandaged, and that he had been moved to a highdependency unit. The following day, they received a telephone call asking them to return to the hospital. When they got there, they discovered that Mr McGrath had passed away. Pathologist Dr Naomi Carter told the inquest how Mr McGrath’s burns, which in Spain were recorded as being 36% but which she believes could have been as much as 50%, triggered hyperglycaemia which led to him suffering a cardiac arrest. He also suffered from aspiration pneumonia as a result of vomit in his lungs and an acute kidney illness. Mr Walsh added: “Geoff was a wonderful man who enjoyed his life, in spite of his severe disability.”

Who’s a naughty ex-King? FORMER Spanish King Juan Carlos is said to have had an affair with a German aristocrat for the last 10 years of his reign.

A new book about the monarch’s “double life” makes the allegation, and it is likely to become a best-seller! The King, who gave up the throne in June 2014 in favour of his son Felipe, was in a romantic relationship with Corinna zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and “for a long time” thought of divorcing his wife, Sofia, said author Ana Romero at the book’s presentation in Madrid on Wednesday. “They were a couple, pure and simple,” she said, before adding that members of the former King’s entourage had

discouraged him from getting a divorce. “What do you see in the book? Well, the double life which Juan Carlos led during a long time - a double life which obviously has not gone well.” Ms Romero, former royal correspondent for the El Mundo newspaper, said the pair met in 2004. She told journalists at the book launch that reports suggest their illicit relationship ended shortly after his abdication. Her 424-page book, called Final de Partida

or End Game, focuses on the last four years of Juan Carlos’s reign, when his popularity slumped. It is based on interviews with around 100 anonymous sources. The first print run of 25,000 copies nearly sold out, under 24 hours since the book hit stores, and its publishers have already ordered a second print run. “It is a chronicle of the end of an era, when Spaniards turned their backs on Juan Carlos,” said Romero. The 77-year-old former monarch’s friendship with Sayn-Wittgenstein, who is divorced from the German prince whose name she bears, emerged in 2012 when Juan Carlos was flown home from Botswana on a private jet after suffering an injury while on an expensive elephanthunting holiday.

The German woman, 28 years younger than Juan Carlos, was among those accompanying the monarch on the trip, which sparked outrage at a time when Spain was grappling with record unemployment and risked needing an international bail-out. Juan Carlos, who won respect for his role in guiding Spain’s transition to democracy after the death of long-time dictator General Franco in 1975, made an unprecedented apology for his behaviour, but his popularity took a serious hit. Ms Romero said the uproar over the hunting trip, combined with a string of health problems and a corruption scandal implicating his youngest daughter, Cristina, created the “perfect storm”, which pushed Juan Carlos to abdicate.

A long hard road THERE is good news and bad news for our road system this week. It’s good to see that the penultimate stretch of the TF-1 ring road is finally open. It covers the tricky north-west section of the project and, in one fell swoop, slices off a good 20 minutes’ journey time.

Travelling around that region of Tenerife has always been a painfully experience. It’s absolutely gorgeous on the eye and if you have all the time in the world, then the view can be stunning, if you are not driving, of course, but you only had to be stuck behind a bus or a lorry and your day is over. The improvement opens the Island up a bit and will lead to a population boom in the region. Once everything is completed, this gorgeous, cooler, greener and considerably cheaper part of the Island will become rather attractive. The

views to La Gomera are something else. On the flipside, the roadworks opposite the Safari Centre are starting to hit home. I understand they are necessary and there is no ideal time to fit in a nine-month project. When they are completed, I am sure they will be worth the hassle. But just like the improvements in San Eugenio, they are causing real problems for a lot of businesses. Daytime trade in the Safari region has fallen off a cliff. There is no relaxation in sipping a glass of wine in the sunshine when a digger is going full speed just 10 yards away. Some businesses will go, and there is no doubt that a percentage of holiday-makers will not return to the “building site”. I’m all for improvements and upgrading, but surely this should be the last disruption for a generation. It seems to me they rebuild the San Eugenio road system every four or five years. And people wonder why the area is not as busy it was 20 years ago.

Dear Editor, I was very interested to see the report in last week’s paper on average wages in Spain. I would suggest that somebody comes to the Canary Islands to see how much we earn on an average hourly rate. I have been working here for 15 years and the “abused” workers in Tenerife are earning nowhere near the figures of the Spanish average mentioned by the European study. Okay, agreed that certain products here are cheaper and, of course, we have a lower tax system, but most workers here in the tourism sector are being done by greedy employers paying, no doubt, less than the minimum wage - whatever that is here! I work part-time, including weekends and bank holidays, for less than seven euros an hour! I am forced into passing the 24-hour weekly agreement for no extra pay! I know many people in tourism who work full-time and still don’t arrive at 800 euros a month. Wages in the tourism industry may be varied, depending on the company and position one holds, but a lot of good workers are being treated like rubbish because, if we don’t go with the employers’ demands, we have no other choice. Either agree or not! The problem maybe the workers themselves, but at the moment we are lucky to have something - and don’t the employers know that. And take full advantage. Name and address supplied

Dear Editor, I would like to set matters right concerning Les Weddell’s brief resume of my life in a recent Canarian Weekly edition. I moved to Tenerife on 31st January last year from Gran Canaria where, for several years, I was resident pianist at two hotels. I have never set foot in Marbella, and nor have I ever said I was there. The Royal Northern College of Music is, in fact, an amalgamation of what used to be the Northern School of Music and the Royal Manchester College of Music, where I had a scholarship at 16 years of age. Hundreds of thousands of Canarian Weekly readers know that I am a recovered alcoholic (thanks for that Les, just what I need). I might add that my last drink was 28th March, 1989, giving me just over 26 years of continued sobriety - and not 17 years, as Mr Weddell wrote. And nor am I a born-again Christian. I have never told a living soul of that since it’s absolutely untrue that I “handed over my life and will to the care of God as I understood him”, which has nothing whatever to do with any form of dogma and creed. It is purely spiritual, and that belief, plus the AA programme, has kept me sober to this present day. Finally, a word about Les, a former session “bone” man, good jazzer who could read anything at sight. I thank him sincerely for the compliments he has made public about me (the cheque is in the post, Les). Colin

Nazi mass-murderer pleads to be forgiven FORMER SS officer Oskar Groening, now a frail old man of 93, has asked for “forgiveness” over his role in mass murder at the Nazi death camp. At the start of his trial this week, he told judges: “For me, there’s no question that I share moral guilt,” admitting that he knew about the gassing of Jews and other prisoners. “I ask for forgiveness,” he said at the hearing

in the northern city of Lueneburg, near Hamburg, attended by nearly 70 Holocaust survivors and victims’ relatives. “You have to decide on my legal culpability.” Groening told reporters as he arrived at court that he expected an acquittal. And in his statement to judges, he did not detail direct participation in any atrocities. Between 16th May and 11th July, 1944, Groening was on duty

when 450,000 Hungarian Jews were transported there, with 300,000 being gassed just after arrival. The former Nazi told the court he was “morally guilty” but not directly responsible for any deaths. Groening, just 21 and, by his own admission, an enthusiastic Nazi when he was sent to Auschwitz in 1942, may turn out to be one of the last big Holocaust

trials because so few of them suspected of committing crimes during World War Two are still alive. He sat defiantly as the trial started; his arms folded in front of almost Holocaust survivors and victims’ relatives. Groening, who entered the court using a Zimmer frame, is being tried on 300,000 counts of “accessory to murder”. He faces up to 15 years in jail.

Crucial ring-road section finally open

ON Wednesday evening, the “southern section” of the ambitious Tenerife ring-road project was open to traffic.

The 15km stretch has been dogged by teething problems over the last few weeks, but a little after 8pm, it was finally given the green light. The new stretch of road instantly takes 20 minutes off a journey from Vera Erques, Guia de Isora to Santiago del Teide, and means that drivers can say goodbye to the much-hated long and winding main road. José Luis Delgado, the Cabildo’s Minister of Roads was delighted to

finally see the stretch open. He said: “It has taken a bit of time and it has been frustrating. We hoped to have this open last month, and then it was all systems go for last Monday. “But our first priority is safety, and we were never going to open until we were satisfied that everything was 100%.” He added that there was still a big chunk of work to be done before the main project would be finished. The last stretch, from Vera Erques to the connection with the TF-1 in Armeñime, Adeje is now scheduled to open in late June. Delgado has been a driving force behind

this project and he deserves credit for twisting the arm of Cabildo President Carlos Alonso to get the extra four million euros needed from the Canary Islands Government to complete the work. Even on Wednesday, there were still a few signs that needed to be erected, and some sections of the hard shoulder needed painting. Then there was the long-standing safety problem with the hydrants in the Bicho tunnel, glitches in the computer system, infrastructure concerns in the final kilometre and problems with signs! -But all of this is now in the past as firefighters,

safety officials and the police gave the road the thumbs-up. Councillor Delgado officially signed the opening document, which was co-signed by Juan Ventura Medina, the CEO of the road’s Infrastructure, then proceeded to open traffic to the new three-lane highway from Vera Erques. Delgado said: “This is one small step for a councillor and a big step for Tenerife. This will work, and it is a way forward for our people because it will improve the quality of life by bringing them closer to work and home, without wasting time on the road.”

Employment rises as economy strengthens SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy may be having a rough ride in the opinion polls, but with the local elections just a month away, he has been given a couple of major boosts. The country’s economic recovery continues to move in the right direction, with some of the most important companies in the business sector posting impressive figures. And there are signs that the employment problem is being cured. Figures out this week show that over halfa-million people went back to work over the past year. According to data released yesterday (Thursday), Spain’s labour market contin-

ues to show signs of improvement. Employment in the first quarter rose 3% compared with the year before, while the number of jobless fell more than 8%. The unemployment rate also came down, compared with the previous year. It means that 23.8% are still out of work, which adds up to more than 5.4m people Spain is now in its second year of post-crisis economic expansion, with most forecasters expecting national output to grow at least 2.5% this year. “The first quarter is typically a pretty bad one for employment,” said Marcel Jansen, a professor of economy at Madrid’s

Autónoma university. “But if you look at the underlying trend, it is clear that the recovery continues. What we have now is pretty strong growth in employment. “,Over the next couple of months and quarters, we will benefit from low energy prices, the depreciation of the euro and low interest rates. Hopefully, that will give a further boost to both GDP and employment.” In election year, it is worth remembering that Rajoy promised to create at least one million new jobs over the final two years of his tenure. So there is little doubt he is backing up his talk with actions. Meanwhile, Caixabank’s net profit nearly

doubled in the latest quarter. A recent takeover, higher lending income and gains on a portfolio of stakes in other firms saw Spain’s third-largest bank post first-quarter net profits that are up 99% from a year ago. They now sit at 375m euros, with a net profit of around 317m. The bank’s loan business leapt 15% compared with 2014, while the 800m-euro purchase of the Spanish arm of Barclays Bank has helped lower costs and increase its loan book by nearly 8%. And the good news doesn’t end there. The lender Bankinter has revealed its first-quarter net profit rose 45% to 87.2 million euros.

Let Cervantes rest in peace NOVELIST Juan Goytisolo is adamant the remains of Miguel de Cervantes should be left in the place they were found.

The writer made that clear yesterday (Thursday) during his acceptance speech for winning the Cervantes Prize - considered the most prestigious in the Spanish language. Goytisolo, an outspoken critic of Spanish governments, who has spent his life in self-imposed exile in France, the US and Morocco, opposes the decision to build a museum to house the remains of the Don Quixote author. “They should leave him alone,” he said last month. “This is just about bloating the coffers of Spain’s official bureaucracy.” His advice followed uncertainty over what to do with the tomb of Cervantes, which was found under the Convent of the Barefoot Trinitarians in

Madrid last month. Researchers admitted they had not been able to identify the exact bones, but were “convinced they had found something of Cervantes”. Madrid Mayor Ana Botella last month described plans for a centre “comparable with that of Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon”. But Almudena GarcíaRubio, an archaeologist working in the crypt, said the Archbishopric of Madrid allowed the excavation “on the condition that the remains stayed inside the convent”. José Ignacio Wert, the Spanish Culture and Education Minister, whose department selected Goytisolo for the Cervantes Prize, said the author, who died in 1616, wanted to rest in the Trinitarians. The Trinitarian religious order helped pay a ransom to secure the release of Cervantes from Barbary pirates in Algiers after he had fought in the Battle of Lepanto.

It’s Groundhog Day. Again! MATTHEW Warchus is the Old Vic’s new artistic director, in the wake of the legendary Kevin Spacey’s departure.

A new stage musical of Groundhog Day will have its world premiere at the London theatre next year. Based on the 1993 comedy film with Bill Murray, the show will be directed by Old Vic’s new boss Warchus. Other plays in his inaugural season include Ibsen’s The Master Builder, starring Ralph Fiennes, and Pinter’s The Caretaker, with Timothy Spall. Warchus is taking over from Kevin Spacey, the Old Vic’s artistic director for 11 years. He said his first season - which also includes a stage adaptation of Dr Seuss’s The Lorax and a dance production of Jekyll and Hyde - reflected a “something for everyone” approach.

He aims to up the number productions per year through shorter runs, and hopes three or four will transfer to the West End or go direct to Broadway via a new partnership with big-name producers Scott Rudin and Sonia Friedman. Groundhog Day reunites Warchus with three of the creative team behind the hit musical Matilda - composer and lyricist Tim Minchin, choreographer Peter Darling,

and designer Rob Howell - who will work with the film’s co -writer D a n n y Rubin. It tells the story of grumpy TV weatherman Phil Con-

nors who is sent to the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and gets stuck in a time loop, having to live the same day over and over again. ‘Broadway classic’ In an int e r -

view with the BBC, Warchus described the show as “an intelligent mainstream Broadway classic” that was ideal for the Old Vic. “It needs a large audience and a large stage, and I wanted to start it in this country, so it’s the perfect match.” He added that the film had made him laugh and cry. “It is really about how little time you have to become the best version of yourself. It’s sophisticated meaty stuff in a romantic comedy package.” It will premiere in June 2016 before going to Broadway. The opening production of the new season in September is Future Conditional, by Tamsin Oglesby, a new play set in a school starring Rob Brydon as a teacher with a cast of 23 “young performers” as his class. Warchus will direct. That will be followed in October by Eugene O’Neill’s American drama The Hairy Ape, directed by Richard

Jones. Warchus will also direct The Master Builder, with Ralph Fiennes as architect Halvard Solness in a new adaptation by David Hare, and also Timothy Spall in Harold Pinter’s 1960 classic The Caretaker. Plans for future seasons include the first revival of Art by Yasmina Reza, a 50th anniversary production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom Stoppard, and a new musical based on the 2014 film Pride, about a group of gay and lesbian activists who supported striking miners in the 1980s, which Warchus directed. Warchus is also introducing a new ticketing scheme, which will make half of all seats at the first five previews of each production available for £10. “It’s not just about young people,” Warchus said. “We’ll be trying to guide or nudge those tickets to people who are new theatre goers.”

Ex-Egypt President gets 20yrs OUSTED Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi has been given a 20-year prison term for ordering the arrest and torture of protesters during his reign.

It is the first verdict he has received since his July 2013 overthrow and one of several trials facing him. But Morsi’s legal team intend to appeal against the sentence. Morsi was deposed by the military following mass street protests against his rule. Since then, the authorities have banned his Muslim Brotherhood movement and arrested thousands of his supporters. Morsi and 14 other Brotherhood figures escaped a more serious charge of inciting the killing of protesters, which could have carried the death sentence. Most of the other defendants were also given 20-year prison sentences. He still has a raft of other charges against him, including his alleged collusion with foreign militants in a plot to free Islamists in mass prison breaks during the 2011 uprising against Hosni Mubarak. Morsi is also accused of inciting supporters to kill a journalist and opposition protesters in clashes outside the

presidential palace in late 2012. As crowds grew outside the palace, Morsi ordered the police to disperse them. They refused, so the Muslim Brotherhood brought in their own supporters. Eleven people died in the ensuing clashes, mostly from the Brotherhood. After the verdict, Morsi and the other defendants gave a four-fingered salute - a symbol of the deadly clearance of Brotherhood supporters at the Rabaah al-Adawiya mosque in 2013. Amr Darrag, a senior Brotherhood figure, called the ruling a “travesty of justice”, adding: “They want to pass a life sentence for democracy in Egypt.” Morsi has rejected the authority of the courts,

shouting during his first trial that he was the victim of a military coup. On Monday, a court sentenced 22 Muslim Brotherhood supporters to death for an attack on a police station in Cairo - part of an ongoing crackdown against the Islamist movement. Morsi was Egypt’s first freely-elected president, but protests began less than a year into his rule when he issued a decree granting himself far-reaching powers.

A kiss says it all! A LESBIAN couple were last month in one of their regular haunts, in Barcelona’s Gràcia area.

But they upset a staff member, who told them to stop kissing because they were bothering the other customers.

The pair, who complained to the region’s Observatory against homophobia, said the employee also told them their behaviour was “inappropriate”. When the women, both 48, filed a complaint, the incident was also relayed to gay-rights’ associations. Catalan groups Lesbocat and FAGC staged a demonstration, which saw several homosexual

couples stage a “kiss-in” at the café. The women also reported the incident to the Gràcia district councillor, and filed a complaint with the regional government. However, the owner’s explanation differed somewhat. She claims the couple were kissing on a sofa and that they were touching each other’s genitals, which upset other customers.

Med’s drowning tragedy HUNDREDS of people drowned on Monday after a boat carrying up to 700 migrants capsized in the Mediterranean Sea.

The vessel, thought to be just 70ft long, overturned in Libyan waters, south of the Italian island of Lampedusa. Just 28 people were rescued, and only a couple of dozen bodies have been recovered. Italy Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said it was a European tragedy and called for an extraordinary EU summit on the migrants issue. He could not verify the number of deaths, but said it would be a “dramatic amount”. United Nations’ refugee agency UNHCR said this latest sinking could total the largest loss of life during a migrant crossing to Europe. Over 1,000 migrants are said to have died crossing the Mediterranean this year. Renzi added that the

trafficking of migrants was a “new slave trade”. Italian naval and coastguard ships, the Maltese Navy and cargo vessels, along with three helicopters were involved in the rescue operation, 130 miles off the coast of Lampedusa and 17 miles from the Libyan coast. The migrants, reportedly, fell overboard when they rushed to draw the attention of passing Portuguese merchant ship King Jacob, causing their ship to capsize. Lampedusa is finding it difficult to come to terms with the latest horror in the seas off its coastline. Much of the harbour has emptied, while coastguard, customs and fishing boats disappeared to help with the rescue operation. Marta Bernardini, who works for the Mediterranean Hope charity, based on the island, said “We are very sad. It’s so difficult for us who live and work in Lampedusa every day, to know that a lot of people die in the Mediterranean Sea.”

Lampedusa is the most southerly point of Italy nearer Africa than the Italian mainland. Locals say that since January - when the EU took control of patrolling Europe’s maritime borders - between 9,000 and 10,000 migrants have arrived on the island. Maltese PM Joseph

Muscat said rescuers were “literally trying to find people alive among the dead floating in the water. What is happening now is of epic proportions. If Europe, if the global community, continues to turn a blind eye, we will all be judged in the same way that history has judged

Europe when it turned a blind eye to the genocide of this century and last century.” Mr Renzi also told the EU summit: “It is unthinkable that in the face of such a tragedy, there isn’t the feeling of solidarity which Europe has shown in other instances.

“We ask not to be left alone, not so much when it comes to emergencies at sea, but to stop the trafficking of human beings.” He said the trafficking was “a plague in our continent - the slavery of the 21st Century”. Pope Francis expressed his “deepest sorrow” over the sinking, saying: “These are men and women like us, who seek a better life. Hungry, persecuted, injured, exploited, victims of wars. They were looking for happiness.” Federica Mogherini, the EU foreign policy chief, said the recent wave of migrant boat disasters was “unacceptable”. She added: “We have said ‘never again’ too many times. Now is time for the European Union to tackle these tragedies without delay.” Last year, a record 170,000 people, fleeing poverty and conflict in Africa and the Middle East, made the perilous crossing to Italy. Tragically, thousands died making the journey.

reasons... ADEJE Councillors have organised the 13th Book and Flower trade fair, which will also feature a number of book signings and theatrical presentations.

The fair, which began yesterday (Thursday) and ends on Monday, is taking place in the Municipal School of Music and Dance (EMMA) car park and the Cultural Centre. The organisers are keen to encourage people to read more. They also hope the fair will boost local book shops and florists - and help writers promote their work. The event began yesterday morning at the Cultural Centre with story-telling and a puppet show. And last night, El Fausto, a new book by Luis J Velasco Quintana, was launched, followed by the exhibition Cuéntame un cuento: Arte Sano San Juan. Today (Friday), the fair opens at 10am in the EMMA car park with a visit from local school-

children. During the day, there will be more story-telling, plus theatre, puppet shop and a book launch at 7pm with the presentation of Era cierta la vida después del divorcio, by Eusebio Marrero. The day ends with a performance by soloists from the EMMA at 8.30pm. Tomorrow (Saturday), activities begin at 10.30am and continue throughout the day, with a public signing of a Manifesto Mas Cultura at 12.30pm and the presentation of two books, Apostol, by Manuel Pérez Cedrés, and Dos Días Al Año, by Laura Delgado González. The evening ends with the IV Shared Verse event at 8.30pm. And in the Cultural Centre 30 minutes later, local singer Maria Herrera will also launch her debut album, Memories, featuring a selection of original songs in English. During the event, a number of Adeje companies are running promotional campaigns, offering discounts to encourage local trading and shopping.

A new European law is about to come into force which allows foreign drivers who commit traffic offences in other countries to be sanctioned for the offences, or face legal proceedings in any member state country.

The European Council has adopted a policy for cross-border exchange of information on traffic offences, which must be implemented in most countries across the continent no later than the 6th of May, with the exception of the UK, Ireland and Denmark who have been given a two year extension on implementation. Under the new policy,

Members of the n332 team visited the Orihuela Costa branch of the Royal British Legion last week, to give an explanation of both the project and a presentation answering some of the most common questions relating to traffic laws and driving in Spain.

The members of the group seemed excited about the presentation and were attentive throughout, as Mark Nolan first explained the history of the N332 project, the Facebook page and accompanying website, before Francisco Morales, a serving officer from the Guardia Civil traffic police, took over and pre-

the exchange of data covers eight traffic offences: speeding, not wearing seat a seatbelt, failure to stop at a red light, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of drugs, not wearing a helmet, driving in a forbidden lane, and illegally using a mobile phone or any other communication devices while driving. Currently there is no mechanism in place to force foreigners to pay fines in none resident countries by means of restraint or seizure, but the change will ensure that there is no escaping the law, or the fines. In Spain, the DGT has been working on implementing a new policy to satisfy the obligation. Together with the administrative proceedings that can be launched against drivers, criminal liability

will also be ensured. Travelling at a speed excessively higher than that which is permitted on the road can become a criminal matter, punishable with imprisonment, withdrawal of license, community service and a fine. A driver who has committed an offence of this type can no longer ignore the criminal liability of legal proceedings. The new directive on cross-border data exchange is a replica of the policy adopted in 2011 by the EU ensuring police cooperation as a legal basis, but the directive was annulled by the courts in 2014, giving a year for a new legal framework to be implemented. The objective of the new policy remains the same as before, to improve road safety and to ensure equal treatment of all drivers. Under the new rules,

member states can access national vehicle registration data from other countries in order to find those responsible for certain offenses that put road safety at risk. The alleged offender may be contacted with a sample letter included in the policy, but that depends on the member state where the offence took place, as each country has autonomy in deciding to decide how to process the sanctions. Currently, the legislation does not allow states to enforce payment of fines in the event of a driver being resident abroad, but the new directive means that the fine can be collected and judicial proceedings can be opened wherever they live and in whichever country to offence was committed. You have been warned.

Meets the Royal British Legion

sented a series of images and explanations. Francisco started by explaining a little about his own background as a serving Guardia Civil officer, and how he and the corps are active around the globe, serving as Military Police in areas where Spanish troops are engaged in peacekeeping and conflict zones.

Francisco then moved on to answer many of those common questions, from documents you are required to carry in the car, changing a wheel on the roadside, buying and selling a used vehicle, and even the speed limit of mobility scooters, amongst other topics, including an explanation about how only uniformed

traffic officers are allowed to take cash payments for fines, and the finer details of how to spot an unmarked traffic patrol car. This was not to give drivers to opportunity to avoid being caught by the unmarked cars, in fact it wasn´t a local car that was described, but allows drivers to identify the real police after numerous fraudsters have tried to mimic the police to stop innocent and unknowing drivers and some of those drivers have subsequently become victims of crime. At the end of the talk, Francisco was presented with a certificate from the Royal British Legion, thanking everybody involved for both their work and their commitment to groups like the RBL, who offer help and advice to countless people during their work here in Spain.

THE latest pension reform, introduced earlier this month by the UK Government, has created significant anxiety and expectation, along with its many twists and turns.

So it´s no wonder that the majority of people are left feeling somewhat in the dark, with what the changes actually mean to us. The idea of a taxfree lump sum will obviously - and quite rightly so - sound attractive to many. W h y

this is Such a taxing issue! wouldn´t it? On the surface, it finally seems that the UK Government has listened to the UK workforce (voters) and their desire to be able to access the cash they have worked so hard to accumulate, when they wish. Are we really being offered something for nothing? You know the old adage ... if it sounds too good to be true, then it usually is

If you still hold pension funds within the UK, whether in the form of a Personal Pension Plan, Company Pension, Frozen Pension or Final Salary Pension, you are now being offered the opportunity of a potential tax-free lump sum (up to the value of 25% of the total fund value) from your pension pot, on reaching the grand old age of 55. That is, of

course, assuming you are still living in the UK. But as a Spanish resident, the UK 25% taxfree rule does not apply, and you must declare this sum in your annual tax return. The Hacienda could tax your pension income at a maximum rate of 47% (dependent on your marginal tax rate in Spain). For illustration purposes, let´s assume you have a Pension Asset to the value of £100,000 - bear in mind that the creation of this asset was to ensure you could live quite comfortably through your retirement years. So, if you take advantage of your 25% tax-free lump sum (£25,000), which can be taxed at your marginal rate in Spain, that will leave £75,000 in your pot. And we reasonably expect

the fund to perform at a minimum of 5% yield, so your annual income will be about £3,700. On the other hand, if you decide to leave the asset (£75,000) invested until you are 65, based on the same assumptions as above, your pot could be worth £121,000, which would achieve an annual income of £6,050. What would you do with the £25,000, or what is left once the Hacienda has taken its cut? Buy a car? Have that well-deserved holiday? Or simply look at your bank balance ? Having considered all options, if you do decide to take the lump sum, and then leave it in the bank, it is safe to

assume that it will receive a poor return. If this is not in line with your income or growth requirements, you need to consult an expert. There are many products out there offering a considerably higher yield, both within and outside of your Pension Scheme (depending on your individual attitude to risk). The above does not constitute advice and you must seek Independent Financial Advice before making any decision regarding your pension funds. Slow Train Through Africa with Griff Rhys Jones

ITV1, 21.00 In episode three, Griff attempts to zigzag his way 1200 miles through Kenya and Tanzania. The journey proves a challenge, with large parts of the railways being relics, leftover from colonial days. Neither tracks nor trains work as well as they used to. Boarding Nyaturu, a vintage steam locomotive made in Glasgow, Griff begins his journey on the high plateau in southwest Kenya. Griff says: “These are areas where equatorial Africa presents itself in an extraordinary variety of ways. We have snow-capped mountains, we have forests, we have desert and we have wild animals.” Built by the British, this railway created a colony and Griff visits a cattle farm established by an aristocrat a century ago. Donning a pair of overalls, he joins the Kenyan workers as they bathe over 2000 cattle to ward off parasites and biting flies. The climate of the Kenyan highlands is pleasant enough for Griff to go for a run, and he meets two young athletes who are aiming to compete in major international competitions. Ruth and Nancy are used to running in thin air at altitude and soon leave Griff behind as they forge ahead. Griff says: “Ruth and Nancy were born at high altitude. When they go to compete in races in the Netherlands, suddenly, they’ll feel light as a feather. They can run faster than everybody else because they’re used to running in the rarefied air.” Passenger trains no longer run to Griff’s next destination, so he leaves the ghostly railway station and takes to the road to reach Giraffe Manor, an unusual colonial legacy. Formerly the home of a Scottish toffee magnate, the manor is now a hotel and home to a herd of resident Rothschild giraffe, who join Griff for breakfast by poking their long necks through the windows. Griff then catches the only commuter train to link the western outskirts to Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi. There he finds the very train carriage, which featured in the country’s most gruesome legend, the man-eating lions of Tsavo. A overnight train then takes him on to Makindu, where he visits a remarkable Sikh temple, established by the Indian workers the British used to build the railway a hundred years ago. In the vast Tsavo National Park, Griff has the special and unique experience of bottle-feeding orphaned baby elephants, whose mothers have been hunted for their precious ivory tusks. He is stunned to discover that elephants are excellent time keepers and begin making their way to where the park rangers are waiting with their milk, at precisely 11am every morning. The railway into Tanzania has fallen into disuse so Griff then crosses the border by road and looks up to see the looming shadow of Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. Visiting a Maasai village, he takes part in a meat feast, where a social faux pas threatens his manhood. Guide Kuya, informs him that because he has eaten the main piece of meat, he should now be circumcised. Making a swift exit, he heads for his next train but the extreme rains of the wet season have washed away some of the railway lines. Griff must fly to Dar es Salaam, where he hopes to get another train across Tanzania towards the Zambian border. Finally arriving at Tazara station, Griff walks in on a workers’ union meeting. His train has been cancelled due to a strike. Rail travel in East Africa is complicated! Griff says: “My safari through East Africa has hit the buffers and I can go no further. I suppose it is at least in keeping with the lack of trains elsewhere on my travels. The railways in this part of Africa are not the priority for Africans that they were for the Europeans who conceived them. While this journey hasn’t always been easy, forgetting it will be very difficult.”

Music programme featuring live sessions from contemporary and classic artists. Joining Jools is US musician and producer George Clinton Parliament Funkadelic, who revolutionized R&B during the 1970s, twisting soul music into funk by adding influences from the likes of Hendrix, Zappa and Sly Stone. The Parliament/Funkadelic machine had huge success over the 70s including their million-selling iconic track One Nation Under A Groove. Two hugely successful British acts also perform on the show. London folk-rock outfit Mumford and Sons return to debut tracks from their upcoming third studio album Wilder Mind, which sees the band take a turn down a more electric sounding road. And Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds also return to the show to perform tracks from second album Chasing Yesterday, which topped the chart back in February.

Paul Channel 4, 21:00

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost cowrote and co-star in this sci-fi comedy adventure - directed by Superbad’s Greg Mottola - about two geeky British UFOwatchers who meet an alien. Following a trip to the Comic Con fan gathering, Graeme and Clive are driving an RV to places in the US where UFOs have supposedly been sighted. One night, they witness a car crash, but when they go to inspect the wreckage, they’re stunned to meet an actual extraterrestrial called Paul. He tells them that he’s been held captive at Area Fifty One, and that he needs transport so he can make contact with a spacecraft that will rescue him. Once the men are over their shock, they agree that Paul can come along - after all, how much closer an encounter can you get? But Secret Service Agent called Zoil is hot in pursuit of Paul. Although Paul isn’t part of Pegg and Frost’s ‘Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy’, it has much in common with them; particularly the cheery spoofing of/paying tribute to genre tropes.

Episode 2 - Len Goodman For The Love Of Fred Astaire Len Goodman is a man who has dedicated his life to dance, and in this film he is travelling across America to explore the extraordinary life, and the imaginative mind of his greatest hero, Fred Astaire. From his daughter to his dance partner, Len leaves no stone untouched as he discovers more about how and why this man became one of the greatest dancers of all time. Says Len: “Growing up in a grey post-war London, my great escape was the pictures and to sit there watching Fred Astaire in white tie and tails, gliding across the floor with effortless ease, well it just captured me. I was spellbound. His technical precision, the sharpness of his movements, the jaw-dropping choreography, all set to the memorable music of Irving Berlin. It’s never left me.” Len heads to New York where a young Fred Astaire learnt to dance at the tender age of six. Forced by his mother to partner his older sister Adele, Fred reportedly hated dance classes but revelled in the rhythmic beat of the teacher keeping time. Fred’s obsession with rhythm was in part inspired by the dance phenomenon that had taken turn of the century New York by storm and here Len meets, and picks up tips from, Jason Samuels Smith, an expert on the history of the new dance that hooked Fred: tap. Jason talks about the black artists who influenced Fred and who Fred in turn acknowledged and tried to give credit to through his performance Biographer Peter Evans talks to Len about the years Fred spent touring a vaudeville act throughout the United States in the shadow of his talented sister which taught him to strive for perfection “...that sense of straining for achievement, that sense of uncertainty about the standards that you’re reaching is going to remain with you for the rest of your career.” And musician Michael Feinstein explains how a chance encounter with George Gershwin brought Fred and Adele to Broadway and London’s West End. But just as they hit the big time suddenly in 1932 Adele retired from performing to marry and start a family - a terrible blow to Fred who had never danced with anyone else... At the age of 34 Fred decided to try something completely new - Hollywood. Len takes us to RKO studios and looks back at the pictures that made Fred Astaire a movie star and discusses Fred and Ginger’s on screen chemistry with Bill Deamer, choreographer of Top Hat on stage. In LA Len also meets Barrie Chase, who danced with Fred Astaire in 1958 for ten years, what she calls a ‘heavenly’ experience; choreographer Randy Skinner who explains how Fred brought ballet and tap together for the first time on screen; and film historian Patricia Tobias who has been looking into how Fred Astaire re-invented dance on film and how he insisted on complete control over those dance numbers. He takes a spin around the room with Top Hat actress Charlotte Gooch and chats to her co-star Alan Burkett. And finally for insight into the real Fred Astaire, a man loved by millions but still wracked with insecurities, Len visits his daughter Ava Astaire McKenzie. Fred was left a single parent after his beloved wife Phyllis died from lung cancer when he was 46, ending 21 blissful years of marriage. Ava confirms her father was indeed a perfectionist and his own worst critic.

The Truth About Your Medicine Cabinet BBC1, 16:00

Dr Chris Van Tulleken calls on the British public to seek out the truth about the top-selling overthe-counter medicines. We spend an astonishing £2.3 billion on pills, potions and lotions from the chemist’s shop every year to beat common ailments from headaches to colds to indigestion. But how much do we really know about what we are buying? Chris embarks on a series of stunts and experiments up and down the country to uncover the secrets of Britain’s favourite medicines: how do they act in the body? Should you take a daily dose of vitamins? Is honey and lemon just as good as cough syrup? What is the best way to relieve pain after exercise? And could home remedies work just as well? Chris finds out whether these common cures are all they are cracked up to be or whether there are better ways to spend our hardearned cash.

Safe House ITV1, 21.00

The Blackwell family must pretend to be ordinary holiday makers, staying at the guest house. They are given a ‘script’ on which they are tested by Robert and Katy – it’s vital each of them knows their cover story. Sam Blackwell’s car is found smashed and abandoned and there’s growing concern for his safety. The police have a possible connection between Sam and known criminal Michael Collersdale (identified as the man targeting the family). Robert explores this current theory, determined to get to the truth. The family is tested when unexpectedly Katy’s friend visits. Meanwhile Michael Collersdale confronts someone connected to the family and the daughter Louisa confides in Katy, triggering a situation which endangers the family. At the safe house Robert’s questioning of the family continues as David, the father, is under scrutiny. Can he explain the large amounts of cash arriving and leaving his bank account? He has a secret that he is desperate to keep from Ali, his wife. Katy is feeling the pressure of keeping the family safe and concealing the real reason for their stay. The youngest member of the family, Joe, gravitates to Robert and wants to know more about the night Robert was shot. Joe’s innocent questioning leads to Robert remembering new details from the night Susan Reynolds died. Louisa and Joe are taken for a sailing trip on the lake. When the boat disappears from sight Robert is thrown into a panic. Later Robert can’t sleep and heads off into the night. Katy is worried and calls Mark who knows exactly where Robert has gone. Mark finds Robert and questions him over the true nature of his relationship with Susan Reynolds. Meanwhile, in the city Michael Collersdale roams free.

This third and final episode of Inside Harley Street introduces practitioners who offer complementary and alternative therapies. Harley Street may well be known primarily as a centre for medical care, but paradoxically it’s also a destination for those who don’t put their faith in conventional medicine. There is a long history of alternative medicine on Harley Street dating back to the 1820s, when John St John Long - who was in reality an artist - invented a controversial cure for TB inspired by his interpretation of the bible. Certain patients in this episode travel to Harley Street as a last resort: 36 year-old May Lyang has been trying to have a baby for five years and comes to see Dr Zhai, who offers traditional Chinese medicine for fertility. Other patients use complementary medicine to address issues such as stress and fatigue. Identical twins Luba and Irena Chmil regularly visit kinesiologist Dr Michael Culp to fend off the exhaustion of daily life with young babies. Alex Adler, an American financial consultant, has intravenous vitamin infusions to maintain peak performance. Also featured in this episode is a company called Viavi, a new type of business on Harley Street, which offers a comprehensive Health Evaluation and Optimization Programme. For an annual fee of £10,000, busy executives can proactively manage their health in the same way that they might manage their careers or their finances.

Alex Polizzi: Chefs on Trial BBC2, 20:00

Alex Polizzi takes on the difficult challenge of finding head chefs. She tackles the Miners Arms, a gastropub in the Forest of Dean. Mario and Karen Constantinides have found it impossible to find a new head chef to help them transform their menu from good pub grub to a destination restaurant. They’ve now turned to Alex for help to find the right person. In this episode, the next three candidates are put through the grueling hands-on interview process. Their first test is about local ingredients, and it’s David versus Goliath as 21-year-old Joshua is pitted against 48-year-old events chef Leslie. Also in the mix is local boy David, who hopes his understanding of the area will push him through. This round is far from clear cut as a confident Leslie clashes with owner Mario and questions are asked about young Joshua’s experience. Competition is intense, as only one will be selected to go through to the final interview at the end of the week.

Nick And Margaret: The Trouble With Our Trains BBC2, 21.00

On a journey across a rail network under increasing strain, Nick Hewer and Margaret Mountford climb on board Britain’s trains to find out whether we’re getting value for money. Twenty years on from privatisation, commuter fares are far higher than in many other major European countries, punctuality is in decline, and overcrowded commuter services are reaching bursting point. In their quest for answers, Nick and Margaret use their business nous to get to grips with the big questions asked by every rail passenger. Where exactly is the £8 billion of fares and £4 billion of public money that go into our trains each year being spent? How much can train operating companies actually do to improve their services? And who is to blame for endless train delays? Nick and Margaret are in for a bumpy ride as they guide us through railway nightmares to meet irate commuters, train operating company bosses and the head of Network Rail. They uncover infuriating inefficiencies, get mired in mind-boggling bureaucracy and experience the drudgery of some of Britain’s worst commutes. As the pair set out to understand how our outdated system can cope with passenger numbers higher than at any time in living memory, they wonder whether there are signs that our railway may be getting back on track.

Carry on Again, Snooker gather testimony from traumatised victims. Doctor 23:20 ..............This Week Highlights For the first time, the series also features video footage showing the inner workings of the gang’s fraud, with brokers revelling in a culture of ‘greed is good’. One victim, 72-year-old Judith Wilkins, was repeatedly called at a particularly vulnerable time, when her husband and brother had passed away in a matter of months. She says: “I don’t think it could have come at a worse time. They were shouting at me and I said please don’t shout at me, I’ve just lost a brother and I don’t need this. They’ve got no feelings at all. They walked all over you and got louder and louder and insisted that I sent them a cheque.” After they threatened Judith with legal action claiming she had entered into a verbal contract, she reluctantly handed over £10,000, most of her life savings. Detective Clancy Tassell explains the impact the fraud has on many victims. She says: “Their quality of life goes downhill. They can lose their homes over it. Some people have taken out loans to put money in this investment. And there’s going to be no return on it and it’s heart-breaking.” The victims’ testimony is crucial in proving that Griston and Noad are selling a lie. The company bank accounts show Griston and Noad are living a champagne lifestyle, buying multi-million pound mansions, driving Bentley and BMW cars and taking five-star holidays on the money stolen from the victims. Griston uses his girlfriend, Kerry Golesworthy, to launder his millions. Kerry has extravagant tastes, spending more than £80,000 of the victims’ money on a new bathroom and tens of thousands more on designer jewellery and a Range Rover with personalised number plates. Fraud Squad follows detectives as they arrest Kerry Golesworthy at a luxury penthouse apartment in a gated community. The couple seem to have an addiction to designer goods. They hid the source of the wealth from neighbours claiming they had won the National Lottery. Detectives also arrest the parents of Matthew Noad. Father Roger, who spent 30 years at Coutts, the Queen’s banker, used his experience to launder £600,000 of his son’s criminal proceeds. This money gave Roger and his wife Linda a lavish lifestyle, a £1 million home and luxury foreign holidays. Awaiting trial, with their passports seized and bank accounts frozen, Griston and Noad have set up a new multi-million pound fraud while on police bail - selling worthless carbon credits to the same elderly, vulnerable investors.

A Blast From The Past

There are hundreds of performing artistes on the island of Tenerife who come from many different backgrounds.

Some arrive here just to work in a holiday resort and in many cases, they did not intend to enter in to a career on the stage. Others have a much more colourful past in showbiz. Lots of comperes have started their working lives with a starkly contrasting job to the one they have now. A prime example of this would be the compere at Bojangles Bar in Los Cristianos. Leeway is now one of the most experienced comperes in Tenerife. A man without an ego and nothing to prove takes to the stage every night in this very popular show bar on the El Mirador strip and has been entertaining holiday makers here for 15 years. He is extremely well respected amongst the cabaret artistes on the island and those he works alongside. Self indulgence is far from his mind on stage and he is totally dedicated to making lasting memories for his audience. But, many will be unaware that Leeway started his working life as a soldier in the British Army. Maybe this is what has made him such a gentleman on and off the stage. Old habits do die hard even though his time on the stage far exceeds that in HM Forces. William L Wright who is known on the circuit under his stage name, Topazz, has been entertaining here in Tenerife with his Barry White show for almost two decades. He hails from Nashville, Tennessee in the USA and

is well known in Germany and Belgium as well as here in Tenerife. He has been in music his entire life and lives by the mantra, “Life is music, music is life.” He was the 8th of 9 brothers and sisters and it all started for him when he and four friends, that he grew up with, formed a group called The Junior Temptations. They were influenced by the voices of Melvin Franklin, Larry Graham, Isaac Hayes and Lou Rawls all of which are apparent today in his performances on the stages of Tenerife. However, during his college years, sports began to play a huge

part in his life and due to his height, (6’7”) he quite obviously excelled on the basketball court. After graduating he played basketball with his team from UTC Tennessee, who later became national champions. Topazz was also inducted into the basketball hall of fame for Best Rebounder in the Southern States. He continued to play in South America and Europe, visiting Austria, Germany, Sweden, France, Switzerland, Holland and Belgium where he finally retired from sport to concentrate on his music career. His first signing was with Byte Records

with a song called “Yes We Are Tall.” This was alongside a DJ turned producer called John Paul Decoster and during its promotional phase they opened for none other than Chaka Khan. It was after this that he then became Bizz Nizz and recorded a song called “Watch Out For Bizz Nizz.” A year after that came the huge Europe wide hit, “Don’t Miss The Party Line.” The song was everywhere and he toured the UK nightclubs with the cult TV show ‘The Hitman & Her’, featuring presenters, Pete Waterman and Michaela Strachen. The show featured ar-

tistes from the Stock Aitken Waterman hit factory that produced so many mega selling records during this time. The biggie for Topazz was his appearance on Top Of The Pops as Bizz Nizz when the songs tag line, “Hey DJ, where’s the bass?” became hugely popular and is still recognised today. In fact if you google, Bizz Nizz and Don’t Miss The Party Line, I’m certain it will bring back memories for everyone who grew up in the early Nineties. His next project saw him tour with the famous Fred Wesley from James Browns Band,

with a band called Plug who released an album called New York New York. Later on he formed a group called Positive Rush and released an album called “Oh.” It was during this time that Topazz landed a role in a French movie called ‘Pa Lizard’ and two of the albums tracks were used in the film too. Topazz has been writing and producing his own music for years with many releases on major labels. His passion is within the genre of funky house and his new album is to be released on June 1st this year and will be titled Body Heat. This will be available through iTunes and through his website www.topazzmusic.com along with his back catalogue of original material. As well as promoting his own material, he is still taking to the stages here in Tenerife and wowing audiences with his completely unique voice. There are so many more artistes that have amazing stories to tell about their careers before Tenerife and most don’t really talk about it much because, to them it is and always has been their job and it is just what they do. If you ever see Topazz at any of the venues that he works here in Tenerife, do go and talk to him, he is very approachable and always has time for people after his shows. He is one of the most interesting people here in Tenerife when it comes to showbiz and his life and this article just sums up in a nutshell, what he has achieved in what is a lifetime career in music and a short but successful sidestep in to professional Basketball.

Hard Rock Cafe

A Hard act to follow!

DEEP in the heart of Las Americas, you will find the Hard Rock Cafe, opposite the Safari centre, and fellowmembers of the famous chain of restaurants. The first one opened in London in 1971 and the group has grown into a household name over the years. We were invited for lunch recently, and to meet the people at the helm of this busy set-up. We were met by Marketing Director Isabel, who introduced us to General Manager Ramon and Oscar, our personal waiter during our lunch. The Terrace was extremely busy, so we opted to sit inside, away from the mid-day sun. Isabel showed us to a lovely table and, after a chat, various menus were brought for us to browse. Diffi-

cult one as there is so much choice. The restaurant/bar is really well set out, with memorabilia everywhere you look. Oscar arrived to take our drinks and my nondriving colleague chose the red berry press, which consisted of berries, lemon and vodka.

I’m sure, with the light and fruity flavour, she convinced herself she was not drinking alcohol. But there was also a large selection of nonalcoholic cocktails. The menu is interesting and there are some novel things to choose from, such as the Air Mexico, made up of

three mini-margaritas, with a tortilla, chips and Salsa. There is even an “allergy menu” for those with special dietary requirements. We changed our mind a few times because there really was so much to choose from. In the end we, opted for a starter: a spinachand-artichoke dip with parmesan flatbreads, and a beautiful cheesy dip. The dip was exact-

ly what you would expect - cheesy and gooey, with plenty of crisp flatbreads to dunk. This was followed by mushrooms and a Swiss burger with added bacon. Actually you can add or take off any ingredients. The burger was cooked to perfection, and you can select rare, medium or welldone, which always suggest to me that a restaurant is happy with the freshness of its meat. It’s also a nice touch. In America it’s standard practice to ask how you would like your burger, just like a steak, but it’s rare, if you excuse the pun, in most countries.

We also selected a pulled chicken sandwich, which was served in a huge bun, accompanied by chips, coleslaw and my favourite iceberg lettuce! Again, it’s the little things that make a big difference. By this time we were so full it was hurting. But we couldn’t leave without trying a dessert, so we went for the fresh carrot cake - not too gooey but it was half the size of a full cake, with fresh carrot inside! Unfortunately, we could find no room to finish it as it was so huge, but us true troupers did our best! After the lunch we explored the legendary memorabilia shop and picked up a couple of reminders of a lovely lunch. All in all, we had a super visit, and we’ll definitely be back.

Another del Duero classic

This week we look at a wine which is nothing short of outstanding.

As many wine drinkers will know the Ribera del Duero is located on the extensive, elevated northern plateau of the Iberian Peninsula. It occupies the southern plains of the province of Burgos, extends west into Valladolid and includes parts of Segovia and Soria provinces to the south and east. The vast majority of production is dedicated to Tinto Fino (the local name for Tempranillo), the dominant red varietal in the northern half of the Spanish peninsula. Geologically, tertiary sediments, consisting of layers of silty or clayey sand, alternate with layers of limestone, marl and chalky concretions. The Duero valley, formed during the Miocene period, has a flat, rocky, gently undulating terrain, ranging from 911 meters down to 750m above

sea level. The Ribera del Duero has moderate to low rainfall (450 mm per year) and is exposed to quite extreme climatic conditions; long, dry summers with temperatures of up to a sweltering 40°C are followed by hard winters during which temperatures may fall as low as -18 °C. There are also marked variations in temperature within each season. The climate is continental and Mediterranean, with more than 2,400 hours of annual sunlight. And it is these conditions which helps the Ribera del Duero produce some extremely well-aging wines. The Al-Nabiz is one of them. The creator Ramiro Carbajo del Río, conjured up a little wonder with its 2011 edition . The name Al-Nabiz is Arabic and means a kind of wine made from dates. But actually it is made 100% from the grape variety tempranillo. With a production of less than 12,000 bottles it is a real jewel in the crown. The rarity does make

it a few pennies more expensive, but it is worth it. With a rich colour in the glass it is a clean and bright. The Al-Nabiz will give you a range of flavours such as redcurrant and raspberry and has the n e c tar the aromas of van i l l a ,cedar and a hint of cinnamon. T h e A l Nabiz 2011 is a wine w i t h strong chara c t e r. It is fresh, l i v e l y, active, with a little astring e n c y, which r e volves a n d

evolves in shades without losing the audacity of fresh fruit wine. Agile and young at the start and then tickling pleasantly in the mouth this certainly conquers the palate. It is an undisputed star at the table with snacks and appetizers, f a t t y cheese spreads and is perfect w i t h meat. Y o u need to open the bottle at least 2 hours before s e r v ing and up to 6 h o u r s to enjoy the true beauty of AlNabiz. It is a wine that will delight y o u r

guests with a good table, whose memories will remain forever. The Al-Nabiz 2011 (DO Ribera del Duero) has been awarded the gold medal at Berliner Wein Trophy 2014 (Berlin, Germany) and Silver medal at the 11th International Wine Awards 2013. Also the wine won a silver medal at the International Competition 2014 in Brussells. It achieved 88 points

in the Penin Guide , 92 points in the Intervinos Guide, 90.23 points in Wine Club and 90 points in the “Living wine” guide. So come to Prestigio y Tradición and give your own rating to this wine. 24th April - 30th April 2015

By Vanessa Vee It’s that time of year when we see a lot of the impending brides and grooms visit the island, accompanied by their entourage of stags and hens.

My best friend flew in on Thursday and informed me that the plane was full to the rafters of party people. To assist with the parties, alongside the youth and student market, as well as the Tenerife workers fraternity, the Insomnia at Sea VIP Boat party was formed 8 years ago, but only became a regular occurrence three years ago. The excursion is billed as “One Party – 3 Events”, and the first extravaganza is at The Sound of Cream, a large club on the Veronicas strip in Playa de las Americas. This evening event is hosted by Dj´s and MC´s from the actual Insomnia brand which is owned by two of the most definitive figures in house music and promotion, Tom Zanetti and Kane Towny. With DJing, producing, song writing, a record label, clothing line, festivals and even a TV show all under the “Sleepin is Cheatin” mother-ship, there isn’t much the duo haven’t conquered. Music is where their hearts lie though and they have a string of releases to prove it with some major track signings, support from artists around the globe, and a crazy calendar of gigs all over the UK and Europe. Their sound is unique with a heavy bass influence, catchy vocals and 4x4 beats. Insomnia live DJ and PA sets are guaranteed to make any party, whether that be a club, pool, beach or boat these guys know how to set it off. But that doesn’t mean skills are overshadowed as this team have bags of talent.

No sleeps until... Insomnia

A great fun night at the club was had by all, which set the atmosphere in preparation for the famous boat party the following day. The meeting point was The Sky Bar in Puerto Colon for 4 in the afternoon. With top tunes playing, the mood was building as everyone congregated. We swapped our ticket for a boarding pass, then we walked in a group around to the boat. Once onboard the gorgeous catamaran, its picture time, as the photographer mingles amongst us all, capturing every opportunity. After the safety briefing we set sail, for three hours, with a completely free bar! We had a choice of any drink we wanted, from soft drinks, to beer, or spirit and mixes, vodka red bull, Juicee, and then their famous house cocktail, “InsomniJuice Plus – It changes your life!” Now this is not a whales and dolphin spotting chilled out trip – far from it. This event is all about the music, and the Dj and MC are constantly stoking the crowd up. Everyone dancing, getting merry, but most importantly, enjoying themselves. After a time we stopped off in the bay for a swim, and the music is taken down a level, by this I mean tempo, certainly not volume. This is a party boat, and we partied solid for the duration. My two friends who both came

with me never stopped grinning from ear to ear throughout, and they are both in their late forties. In fact when I spoke to the Insomniteam, apparently last year they had a 73 year old come along for the party! On the journey back, the champagne spray was fired to great music, as well as lots of cheers, screams and laughter. Back into port, and it’s pointed out that all photographs from the day are available for free on the Insomnia Facebook page. One thing that is noticeable and makes this boat party stand out from all the others, is that there is absolutely no party games, and this was stressed to me by Tom and Kane, as that is not their interest, it really is all about the music. But it’s still not over, as straight after disembarkation all the revellers went back to the Sky Bar for the after party. More drinks and a free barbeque! This is suitable for groups and couples but you must be at least 18 and be advised that extreme partying is on the menu. Tickets for Insomnia are 55 euros and can be purchased in all Hotel receptions, Excursion offices or online at a discounted price on www. insomniatenerife.com For more information, reservations or residents discounts, call 0034 690 126 477

I OFTEN stop to look at the bewildering array of colours available to you, the buying public ... not only in the chemists but in supermarkets and even in the local garage.

Yet I was taught that colouring hair was an ART, and it took me years to learn how to blend and apply colour. From your basic root touch-up to a full colour, foiling and precision-colouring, all was learned during and after my college and salon years. And I am still picking up new techniques and colouring ideas. So how difficult must it be to know what to put on your hair to achieve that desired look your after? How can grabbing a colour from the shelf be a guarantee that you will get the colour stated on the box? Trust me, colouring hair isn’t a matter of slapping it on. It isn’t a wall you’ll emulsioning

but your hair, and you’ll be walking around with it on your head for all to see - be it good or bad. When you purchase a colour from the supermarket, you don’t have a professional with you to help choose. No, it’s pure guesswork. Those colours, no matter what shade, have a “general” peroxide content, means the product does NOT know what your hair type is like - its base shade, its texture, its percentage of white, etc. The product will give you a general colour, which might not be the colour you desire. So you could be left with brassy yellow rather than that ash blonde on the box (who, by the way, has been photoshopped to within an inch of her life). Or worse, darker than you wanted l,eaving no way to lighten it yourself. Colouring hair is an art. We blend colours together to give you the tone you want, taking into account all aspects of your hair. This is why, when I see

patchy colour or strawlike texture, it makes me a little mad that these chemicals (because that’s what they are) are freely available to anyone who wants to use them. We deal with four levels of peroxide, which we mix with our tints, and that means the one we choose is the right one for your hair, with that chosen shade - not some guess-work in your local supermarket. Your stylist will examine your hair before anything is applied, and he/she will talk to you if you are a new client about what could be “underneath” your present colour. This affects greatly what we put over your hair as the old colour, even if you can’t see it will have an effect the final result. There is no eraser for hair colour, and you can’t just rub it out and start again. So take this into consideration as you throw in that copper-brown box of colour into your trolley. You might end up like the carrots in there with it!

By Monica Dyson NO woman is ever too old for romance! And if you can’t always get the real thing, it seems that losing yourself in the pages of a book is next best.

A poll by readers at my local library here in Sheffield to mark Valentine’s Day revealed some quite predictable results. It is usually Mr Darcy, from Pride and Prejudice, who tops every poll I’ve ever seen. But on this occasion Edward Rochester, from Jane Eyre, joined him as a joint and worthy winner. And not a Christian Grey in sight! In a separate and nationwide poll, Mr Darcy again came top, but with surprising contenders in the list. In second place came Gilbert Blythe, from Anne of Green Gables, and my teenage self would not have argued with that! Mr Rochester did make the list, but also Almanzo Wilder from Farmer Boy, by Laura Ingalls Wilder, The Count of Monte Cristo, by Alexander Dumas, George Emerson, from Room With a View, by EM Forster and Enjolras from Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. Once you’ve read the book, the next best thing has to be a convincing portrayal of your hero on stage or screen, and I must mention Aidan Turner, the new Poldark. Wow! You are never too old for lust, ladies! Are you getting it in the Canary Islands? Poldark, I mean, not lust! One of my special favourites has to be Heathcliff, from Emily

24th April - 30th April 2015

Touch of romance Bronte’s Wuthering Heights, and I’ve rarely been disappointed by any portrayal of him. Oh, I tell a lie, I really must try to forget the time Cliff Richard played him! However, the Heathcliff stage show in 1996 was well-received by legions of devoted Cliff fans and broke all boxoffice records, even though one critic did describe it as Living Dull! (get it? Living Doll!), so what do I know! The most magnificent, darkly-brooding portrayal of Heathcliff has to be the 1939 version by Laurence Olivier. Filmed obviously in black and white, it lent itself to the dramatic landscapes of West Yorkshire and, like many old films, has stood the test of time and never disappoints. Olivier also played a magnificent Fitzwilliam Darcy in the 1940 version of Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice, although the sight of Colin Firth emerging from the lake in the 2001 film seems to be the No.1 film moment of all time with many female fans. There are no statistics to say how many men also enjoyed it! There have been so many versions of Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte: Edward Rochester has been played by Stanley Baker, Timothy Dalton, William Hurt, Michael Fassbender and Ciaran Hinds. But again, old guys rule and the most memorable one has to be Orson Welles, who starred with Joan Fontaine in 1943. Last Night I Dreamt I went to Manderley Again .... one of the most famous opening pas-

sages from any book has to be that from Daphne du Maurier’ss Rebecca, and in it she gave us the tortured Max de Winter, again played by Olivier in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 version of the film, alongside Joan Fontaine. No other portrayal has ever matched his performance. How we longed to soothe his fevered brow! Rarely has a book received such worldwide acclaim, and it has never gone out of print. In fact, an edition was used by the Germans in World War 11 as a codebreaker, and a copy was found in the headquarters of Rommel. So what is it with women and escapism? Ever since I can remember, Mills and Boon have transported women

into another world, of romance and swashbuckling heroes. Their publicity blurb stated that they were “bringing romance to life!” In the UK during the Fifties, you could indulge to your heart’s delight by joining places like Red Circle Libraries. These establishments bore no resemblance to the ones we use today (long may they flourish), but it was where you could buy escapism for a few pence. The sign in the window stated: “Reading, your cheapest pleasure!” They specialised in romantic reads, together with others which included westerns and thrillers. They had been in existence since 1908 and

reached their peak during the depression years of the Thirties and Forties, when women were desperate to get away from their humdrum existence. By the Fifties, when local libraries were in decline, as much as anything through the advent of television, Mills and Boon started to sell in newsagents, becoming the largest selection within the paperback market. Although the story lines of today do contain some modern themes, with other contenders like the Black Lace range of books, which are erotica and erotic fiction (so I’m told) and written by women for women and becoming increasingly popular, psychologists say that

a huge number of issues seen in their clinics are influenced by romantic fiction, That’s because, kit is said, when women become dissatisfied with their real relationships and are often unable to distinguish between fact and fiction. Even if the hero were a complete cad, an air of chivalry prevailed in which women, despite having fought long and hard for equality, secretly desired. But I prefer to describe chivalry as just basic, good manners. And at our age, if a man holds a door open for us or offers us a seat on a bus, then it shows that his mother has taught him well. And we accept, graciously.

Accion del Sol

Make your dogs safe WE have again seen a large increase in the number of puppies arriving at the refuge in poor condition… if only people would sterilise or castrate their dogs! These terrible situations would be erased easily, and Tenerife would be a much better place for our fourlegged friends. Our policy at the refuge is that every dog is castrated before being allowed to be adopted, as well as having a full clean bill of health, inoculated, passported and micro-chipped. We are always in need of towels, blankets, sheets, collars, leads, puppy milk and dog toys, if you would like to help us, and it would be much appreciated at the refuge. Our latest fund-raising event is at the refuge on 9th May at from 2pm. We are asking our friends and Accion supporters to take a picture of their favourite pet with flowers, and

submit them to our email address teneriffa@aktiontier.org They will be printed and displayed at the refuge, ready for the judges to select three winning pictures, which will be awarded a prize. Our fund-raiser will be a fun-filled day, with a “fun dog”! obedience competition, in which you can show off your dogs’ talents. Mr and Mrs Dog 2015 will also be chosen on the day, as well as lots of fun and games for the children, a petting farm

with lots of animals, horse-riding, bouncy castle, cakes, hot food, music and a chance to tour the amazing facilities and to meet many of the refuge dogs. Definitely a date for your diary. Watch those vitamins!

The New Age of Exercise By Nico Gil

of Activate Sports Club

Change is everywhere. Fashion, technology, architecture, food, travel – the famous saying of ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus “Change is the only constant in life” applies to every facet of daily life, which, of course, includes physical exercise.

Over the past few years, there has been a noticeable shift in the fitness world. This “New Age of Exercise” (which is a term I use, not an officially recognised movement within the industry!) may sound all hippy and idealistic, but it’s actually the best thing that’s happened in a very long time when it comes to finally realising the obvious: there is no use conditioning the body if the mind is not also involved in the process. The most important changes I think are these: 1. It’s no longer all about what you look like: Looking into a

mirror, making funny, pain-induced faces while you lift way too many kilos in a manner that will almost certainly injure your back, all in the attempt to have bulging muscles is no longer the fashion. Thank God. Now it is about working to obtain optimal physical and mental health, and to condition your whole body over time. 2. Class sizes are getting smaller: It sounds rather obvious but it’s virtually impossible for an instructor to correct, guide and encourage a class of 25 people. In Yoga or Pilates, for example, it is especially important that each person in the class gets the necessary correction – doing these exercises incorrectly can do much more damage to the neck and back than sitting on the sofa doing no exercise at all. 3. Meditation is no longer seen as a hobby for Buddhist hippies. A combination of scientific studies, simple observation and common sense has led people to realise the many, many benefits of regular meditation. In an ever-stressful world, which moves at an increasingly fast pace, meditation has been proven, among other things, to: reduce feelings of stress and anxiety; improve concentration; produce a greater sense of happiness; decrease pain/

inflammation; boost the immune system and increase empathy and compassion. More than enough reasons to switch 20 minutes of social media or TV a day for this fabulous practice. 4. Rest days are as important as your workout: It’s not all about pushing yourself to the limit every day at the gym with punishing workouts any more. Giving your body the time it needs to rest and recover post-workout is now just as important as the workout itself. Aside from preventing muscle fatigue, giving your muscles time to recover and adapt is essential in preventing injuries. 5. Exercising in nature is big business: No-one wants dark, small, sweaty gyms any more. Bright, clean, fresh, open spaces are where people want to be exercising. The closer to nature the better. And where better than the Canary Islands for that? Our fabulous climate means we never really have any problems or obstacles to getting active outside. Yoga classes on the beach, a bike ride through the mountains, or even a walk along the coastline are all more beneficial than being stuck inside four walls, when you view physical exercise as one part of a holistic healthy lifestyle.

By Val Sainsbury MOST people take vitamin tablets to improve their health and protect them against disease. But popping too many supplements can actually increase the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Over-the-counter supplements are promoted for their health benefits, yet they exceed the recommended daily amount and could have a counter-effect. Dr Tim Byers, from the University of Colorado Cancer Centre, said: “We are not sure why this is happening at the molecular level. But evidence shows that people who take more dietary supplements than needed tend to have a higher risk of developing cancer.” Two decades ago, research found people who ate more fruits and vegetables tended to have less cancer. So Dr Bryers began to investigate whether taking extra vitamins and minerals would further reduce the risk of developing the disease. One trial exploring the effects of beta-carotene supplements showed that taking more than the recommended dosage increased the risk for developing

both lung cancer and heart disease by 20% . Folic acid, thought to help reduce the number of polyps in a colon, actually increased the number in another trial. Dr Bryers said: “This is not to say that people need to be afraid of taking vitamins and minerals. If taken at the correct dosage, multivitamins can be good for you. But there is no substitute for good, nutritional food.” He added that most people get the daily recommended doses of vitamins and minerals in their diets by eating healthy meals. “At the end of the day, we have discovered that taking extra vitamins and minerals do more harm than good.” The findings were presented at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting. However, critics say that many people are de-

ficient in vitamins, and supplements can help them get the nutrients they need. A spokesperson for the Council for Responsible Nutrition, the US trade association for the dietary supplement and functional food industry, said: “Cancer is a multi-factorial disease for which there is no proven prevention. “However, good nutrition is highly-recommended by many experts as one way to keep you healthy.” Government research demonstrates that Americans do not obtain all the nutrients they need from food alone, and in those cases, dietary supplements can help fill nutrient gaps. “We do not recommend high doses of vitamins, unless under the direction of your doctor.”

The bag ladies By Carl Pattison

WHAT is it with you ladies and your must-have handbags? Why the collection in your wardrobe that could stock a shop?

One thing I’ve noticed is that bags come in all shapes and sizes, including a never-ending array of colours and designs. But what is it that draws you to them, and why so many? One thing is for sure: a bag will be around for more than one season and, if

you choose well, they tend to complement most outfits. So how do you go about choosing a new one, especially it won’t be when you need one but when one catches your eye. Firstly, look at what you will be using it for: Work? Going out? A special event? Then look at what you might be carrying around with you. There’s no point going for a little Chanel number if you’ll be lugging around paperwork or the kids’ toys. It has to fit your needs and be versatile, so don’t grab at something gorgeous if nothing is going to fit in.

Then there’s the style. Do you go for basic and functional, or something that looks a million dollars with your new outfit? This all depends on you and your taste. Try to stay away from this season’s must-have bags as they will look dated in six months. Instead, go for classic. This doesn’t mean boring but something that doesn’t scream in your

face. It will look great for a few weeks until you get bored with it. Choose a colour that matches your wardrobe and lifestyle. Don’t buy a bag impulsively, only to find you have to restock your clothing rail to match it. Best buys are black, silver, gold, white and neutral., which will blend in with your look and not clash with your shoe collection. Okay, if it’s for something spe-

cial, you will then pick a colour which goes with your shoes. But remember, these bags rarely get used on a daily basis and may spend months in your wardrobe. If you are trying to match bag with shoes, it’s so hard to match up these items unless you buy them at the same time. That’s why a metallic bag looks great with any shoe colour. Just don’t overdo the bling. If you are out and about and one catches your eye, think: “What will this go with, and do I really need it?” Of course, you ladies don’t always need a bag - it’s just there

and you want it. Fine. But do make sure it will do something for you and your clothes. Remember, a really small bag on a larger lady will make her look bigger, as does a larger bag on a smaller-framed woman. It will drown her! You need to “try it on”, as you would clothing. It has to do something for you or there’s no point having it. And one final thing: you don’t have to break the bank for it to look a million dollars. Choose wisely and look for timeless shapes and fine detail. Just because it has cost the price of a small car doesn’t make it gorgeous.

You walk upwards on an escalator, with a speed of 1 step per second. After 50 steps, you are at the end. You turn around and run downwards with a speed of 5 steps per second. After 125 steps, you are back at the beginning of the escalator.

The Question: How many steps do you need if the escalator stands still?

In the morning, the 200 kilograms of cucumbers are 99% water. Therefore, the non-water part of the cucumbers has a mass of 2 kilograms. At the end of the day, the cucumbers are 98% water. The remaining 2% is still the 2 kilograms of non-water material (which does not change when the water evaporates). If 2% equals 2 kilograms, then 100% equals 100 kilograms. Consequently, the greengrocer has 100 kilograms of cucumbers left at the end of the day.

Luckless Tenerife knock on wood CD Tenerife 0 Llagostera 0

THE secondbiggest crowd of the season saw a fine contest and a match with perfectly encapsulated Tenerife’s season.

As the old saying goes, if Tenerife didn’t have bad luck, then they would have no luck. It was a remarkable match, played like an old-fashioned cup-tie and a contest that saw Tenerife hit the woodwork four times before twice nearly losing the match in the last minute of time added on. I wrote last week that the visitors were a cracking little team. Just like Eibar, they are a tiny side who would have no real right to play in the Conference if they were in the English pyramid. They were scratching around in the eighth tier of Spanish football just a decade ago. That’s a league below the standard the Dog and Duck play in on a Sunday morning. Today they are a remarkable 8th, just four points off the play-offs, and they showed last weekend that they are no flash in the pan. Let’s get one thing straight, this was a match Tenerife should have won comfortably. But the visitors never stopped trying, Their journeyman keeper Rene Roman had his game of the season, and, but for a bit of luck, they should have nicked it at the death. That would have been harsh on a Tenerife side who really went for it. It was a must-win game in terms of trying to get into any sort of play-off picture and while the draw ended that dream, it still kept Tenerife a healthy six points clear of the dropzone. With Diego Ifran not 100%, there was a full debut for Abdon Prats. The Mallorca loanee was preferred to Aridane, who must now know his days are num-

bered. Prats did all right and linked up well enough with man of the moment Maxi Perez. With fellow January loanee Juan Carlos also starting, there was a fresh look to the side and the two surprise inclusions clearly threw Llagostera. In the first half they struggled to work out Tenerife’s shape and movement. Prats, Maxi and Carlos Ruiz all squandered decent first-half chances before Tenerife exploded in the second half. At the start of the half, Maxi hit the woodwork, and a few moments later Suso did the same when it seemed easier to score. Suso was causing mayhem down the Tenerife right, but chance after chance went begging. On the hour mark, Cristo Martin replaced Juan Carlos for his 100th match for Tenerife. This galvanised Tenerife and, 20 minutes from time, Rene stood strong as Maxi had a one-on-one. Seconds later, former Las Palmas defender Ruyman was stretchered off and his replacement Jordi was chasing pigeons as Tenerife binned another couple of chances. Realising it was not Maxi’s day, manager Raul Agne replaced

the Uruguayan with his fellow countryman, Diego Ifran. But little changed. Three minutes from time, Suso’s cross picked out Cristo, who coolly squared the ball for Ifran, unmarked six yards out. But his firsttime effort smacked against the crossbar - and in injury-time, Ruiz’s looping header hit the top of the bar. Tenerife could still be playing now and the ball wouldn’t go in. There were five minutes of injury time but, as is the norm in Spanish football, the ball was in play for just 90 seconds. But during that time the visitors nearly left with all the points. From a Tenerife corner Llagostera broke. Jose Rios tore down the left and Diego Rivas was screaming for the ball in the middle of the park. The veteran received the pass, sprinted the length of the Tenerife half and was one-onone with Dani Rodriguez. The big Venezuelan stayed big, invited the shot and palmed the ball to safety. Seconds later, they were on the front foot again and a poor header from Ruiz saw the ball fall invitingly for Tito. His 25-yard shot got a slight deflection with Dani stranded.

Then, in time added on, Llagostera had a free-kick 30 yards out. Impressive full-back Rios curled in a leftfooted ball which was beautifully met by the head of Pedro Alcala. Somehow, Dani put out an instinctive boot to stop the ball, but the rebound fell to Diego Rivas, who appeared to catch his studs in the grass with the open goal right in front of him. Position

It was a remarkable piece of fortune for Tenerife as the ref blew for full-time straight away. Maybe Tenerife did get a bit of good luck after all last weekend! Tomorrow (Saturday), Tenerife travel to face a Mallorca side who have had a horrible year. They are just above the drop zone but have not won for six weeks. Like Tenerife, they are Points

PLD

Won

a confidence side. They are normally decent at home, but for some reason it’s not happened for them. The squad is decent, but maybe the mountain of boardroom problems has hit the dressing room. Pau Cendros, Michel Pereira, Assulin, Arana and former Newcastle striker Xisco are more than good enough at this level. Draw Lost

A Rocking Good Night!

You’ve probably already seen the pictures on pages 14 and 15! Previous darts league presentation nights have been raucous, fun filled, noisy and wonderfully enjoyable events. And this years was no different! 200 darting revellers turned up at the Showtime venue last Friday night to take in the great atmosphere, enjoy the fine wine and grub, cheer on the memorial trophy finalists and to applaud the seasons cup winners. The Memorial Trophy is an end of season singles knock out darts competition that raises funds for a local charity, and the first of the 4 finals played on stage saw the ladies doing battle. Karen from Bar 180 beat Julie of Naughty Nautas. Next up, local rival pair, Kelvin from the Waterfall faced Dennis from The Palms for the Division 2 pot. Maybe the lepre-

chaun outfit worn by Dennis had an effect on Kelvin, but it certainly got the crowd going, and the reaction from Dennis when he fired in the

winning double was a real treat! So, 2 down, 2 to go, but it was then time for some top notch food, and award winning entertainment. We were given the full treatment by the Robbie Williams tribute, Rock DJ. And boy did we rock! Especially a few of the, shall we say, more senior darts league lads, who formed up on stage as a Rock DJ boy band and were coaxed into removing their shirts. It goes without say-

ing that plenty of embarrassing videos found their way onto Facebook! After we had put our clothes back on, more darts action followed and new boy from Eastern Europe, Serhii put in a fine performance to beat Jamie of Ourplace Playboys. Safe to say that his very vocal supporters thoroughly enjoyed his Division 1 trophy win! The Premier League final was an all Phoenix Bar affair that pitched previous winner Mitch against team mate, and 17 year old star of the future, Jonnhy. Mitch quickly gained a 2 leg advantage, but Jonnhy had other ideas and roared back with some great darts to

level the match. Jonnhy can be very proud of his efforts this season, and no shame in losing out to Mitch on the night. It was a fine match and the crowd loved it. The night then continued as we acknowledged all of the silverware winners, and cheered them on to the stage to receive their trophies. Some of them might have been a bit wobbly by now, but we can report that no one fell off the stage. The raffle draw, and plenty more lemonades rounded off another fantastic even-

ing. And the whole league can be very proud of the 1220 euros raised for local charity, Helping Hands. Very proud indeed. Pictured here is chairman Harry with Oasis Fm’s Chris Elkington handing the money over to Liz from Helping Hands. Of course the darts league will continue for the 2015/16 campaign, and if any new teams or venues are looking to join up, please contact us by e-mail at oasisfmdarts@Hotmail. com The AGM is on Sunday 3rd May at

Decisions decisions! WE are running out of games, and nothing is cut and dried. The battle for the title is now a four-horse race, and it looks like going right to the wire. We didn’t have the full fixture programme last weekend because of the FA Cup semi-finals, and that is reflected in the point-scoring team of the week. Leicester, battling to avoid relegation, had a good week with their third win in a row, and

this meant they had two players featured, as did Chelsea, Man City and West Brom. The rest came from Burnley, Everton and Stoke. As mentioned earlier, it is now between four teams as to who will be crowned champions. Coffee Shop Karma, led by Gordon Wilson, retained top spot. But his two rivals made points up, with Nick Abbott’s Boomtown Rabz moving to within eight points and Ray

Malone’s Inter Malone just 19 points behind, so both still very much in with a chance. Gordon got away with it this week. Two players - Hazard and Eriksen - scored nearly half of his points. There is some deadwood in his current squad and it will need a few tweaks before this week’s round of matches. He would be second but for some bad luck for Nicky Abbott. Some late injuries meant he

played with just 10 men. Sometimes, the bench can make all the difference. The team of the week was Henley’s Like, managed by Gath Gray who amassed 66 points. Hazard and Chadli were the big point contributors. This week will truly test the fantasy manager as some teams play twice. Will there be a raft of point reductions to ensure some extra games? Players cannot earn points if they

are at home watching the goals go in on Sky Sports News. I won-

der who will be brave enough to pick Diego Costa...

Gaffers edge a step closer A N O T H E R round of games have now been played in the Direct Telecom Pool League, and it will go to the wire in both divisions.

Tuesday sees current champions Tenerife Hammers A take on leaders Gaffers A in a clash which could well decide where the title is going. Both teams were in action this week, with Gaffers A facing Terrace Bar A, who are in a relegation battle. First blood went to the visitors, but once Gaffers A had levelled the score, they never really looked back, racing into a lead they wouldn’t relinquish as their unbeaten run continued. But the Terrace boys gave a good account of themselves, with many games being close. The scoreline didn’t reflect the game, eh Neil? Hammers A went to Los Abrigos to take on The Phoenix, the home team knowing a win could move them up to third spot. However it was not to be as the visitors proved to be too strong. It was a good contest, but Hammers A are in form, especially Paul, who has now

won 26 games in a row. It sets up the match between the big two beautifully. Tenerife Hammers A simply must beat Gaffers A or their dream of retaining the League title will be in tatters. It will be interesting to see how the captains play it. Traditionally, Gaffers always start with Ash and Neil, while Hammers go with Jambo and Paul. Will the skippers try to secondguess their opponent and play around with the line-up? Tenerife Hammers C couldn’t improve their league placing as they looked to move off the bottom of the league after facing the Phoenix Potters in a game dubbed as the “Werther’s Cup”. It was a cagey affair with the lead swapping hands a number of times. The Potters put their six-man squad to good use. They all played in the first six frames and would have been happy at 3-3. They then powered into a 5-3 lead and were never going to be caught, despite Heineken winning all three matches for the first time since his move from Palms A. Exiles B were on the fringe of the relegation battle as they played Palms Bar B. Exiles is not an easy place to get a result, and so it proved with the visi-

tors struggling to take frames. The home team were in confident mood and never looked like losing. And boy, did they welcome the three points which has secured their safety for next season. They have had a fine season and can be proud of their league placing, but for Palms B it was a disaster in their quest to finish above their A team. Waterfall Rebels made a really slow start to the season but have come good in recent weeks.

They faced Dreamers A with both teams starting the night level on points. They were side by side in the league, and the same could be said about the game. Dreamers were up 2-0 early on, only for Bubbles and Dan, aka Laurel and Hardy, to level the match. In fact, they played a massive part in the final outcome. After nine frames, Waterfall were 5-4 up and the lads got the frames to sneak them home 7-5. It was rough on Gav, who won all three of his frames for the visitors. The Rebels are now up to a season-high sixth spot. In Division Two, it looked as though Sporting Jester A had pretty much wrapped up the title and promotion. But in a shock, The Crown inflicted their second defeat of the season, which means the title race might be back. Over the first eight games there was nothing to separate the two sides so, with the score balanced at 4-4, they

entered the last round of games. In the next game, it was Bill for the Crown against Dave C for the Jesters. Bill had won both his earlier games, and he was in a confident mood. The momentum was certainly with him and he went on to record his third success to grab a very good win for his team. Waterfall Jokers took a big step towards cementing third spot and, with games in hand over Bluebell A, could still finish runners-up. They were down in Los Cristianos for a game against Dreamers B, who were hoping to continue their winning ways after a good victory last week. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, though, they didn’t show up and the Jokers ran out easy winners, even though they couldn’t quite pull off the whitewash. Gaffers B were looking to improve their league position as they travelled to Next Door, with both teams coming into this fixture on the back of wins.

It was a close game, with both teams playing well and taking frames. But nobody could get an advantage, and it was no surprise to see the game finish all-square. Picasso’s entertained Tenerife Pool Tables and it was an excellent match. It was another one of those close calls, all the way through, and could have gone either way, with both teams comfortable at the table. Both teams would have been happy with a draw, but Picasso’s just had that little bit extra and managed the win. In the final game, James Place played host to Hoppy’s Bar and, without wanting to sound like a stuck record, it was again a close match. The first eight frames were shared, but James Place are a strong side, though, and came close to promotion last season. They dug deep and rattled off the first three frames of the final session to take another three points.

Last chance for Arsenal

We are down to the final five or six games and for some teams the season is over. But the race for Europe continues while the battle to stay up is going down to the wire.

Southampton V Spurs

West Brom V Liverpool

It was a massive win for West Brom against bang in form Crystal Palace last week and Tony Pulis will now feel the Baggies are safe. Liverpool will be licking their wounds after a poor performance against Aston Villa in the cup and if they are to have a glimmer of a chance of getting a top four spot then this is a must win match. If they don’t then its season over. My Prediction: Away Win

Stoke V Sunderland

Stoke put in a very gritty performance against Southampton and showed great character in coming from a goal behind to take the win. At home they are top drawer and it has been a fine season for Mark Hughes men. They will surely have too much for Sunderland who are in all sorts of trouble. If they lose here and other results go against them, they could find themselves dropping into the bottom three. My Prediction: Home Win Southampton seem to be tiring towards the end of the season after suffering another loss last week against Stoke but this is an important game as they are battling Spurs for a Europa League place. At present they are a point behind the visitors but a win will put them in the driving seat. Tottenham returned to winning ways against a poor Newcastle side ahead of Mauricio Pochettino’s return to St Mary’s. There is no love lost between him and his old charges. My Prediction: Draw

Q.P.R. V West Ham

Q.P.R. have had a long break after not being in action last weekend and they will be hoping that fresh legs will help them. They have perked up a bit recently and they couldn’t have wished for a better fixture. West Ham have been woeful in 2015 and if the season had started on Boxing Day they would be in the relegation zone. Big Sam needs to show he can motivate his side to finish the campaign strongly. My Prediction: Home Win

Crystal Palace V Hull

Palace are safe and they will be back at the top table next season but there is still the possibility of a top ten finish, so they will be keen to put last week’s game behind them. Hull are in real danger, as they find themselves just out of the bottom three but only on goal difference. And they have a horror run in. They simply must get something at Selhurst Park. My Prediction: Home Win

Newcastle V Swansea

I couldn’t be a Newcastle fan at the minute, turning up each week to watch them going through the motions. They are not directly involved in the relegation battle but they are only 7 points off the bottom three. They still need another win from somewhere. Swansea have had such a good season and a win will keep them in eighth spot, which would be their best finish in the Premier League. My Prediction: Away Win

Burnley V Leicester

If ever a game could be described as a six pointer then this is it! Burnley dropped to the bottom after defeat at Everton and if they are going to pull off the great escape nothing less than a win will do. They have showed battling qualities but they cannot find the back of the need. That is not a problem for Leicester who have finally woken up. They wiill be very confident of victory after winning three games in a row, the first time they have done that in the Premier League since 2000. My Prediction: Draw

Everton V Man Utd

Everton always seem to play well against Man United even if they don’t get the result. There is no doubt that they are hitting a good run of form at the right time. They have really pulled up their socks in recent weeks and could still get a top ten finish. Man Utd were unlucky to not to get a result against Chelsea after having 71% possession but goals win games. There is lots to like about the Red Machine at the moment and despite the Chelsea setback their tails are up. They are looking strong and this is a fascinating match. My Prediction: Draw

Arsenal V Chelsea

Arsenal still have title aspirations but they are ten points behind Chelsea having played the same number of games. A win will certainly make things more interesting but if they are to stand a chance they are going to have to play a lot better than they did against Reading. Chelsea are not playing to their usual high standard but they have been managing to get the results, and that is the sign of a championship winning side. A win in this game and they will have one hand and four fingers on the trophy. My Prediction: Home Win

Man City V Aston Villa City have Aguero back amongst the goals and they will see this as a banker three points as they look to get back up to second place. Villa have beaten Spurs in the league and Liverpool in the FA Cup to book a place in the cup final but they are still in a relegation dog fight. Many a side has lifted the cup and gone down. The match revolves around Benteke and whether the City defence can handle him. My Prediction: Home Win
