Welsh legend Sir Tom all set for his Tenerife debut

Contiuned from front The Welsh legend has been tempted by YWN promotions to perform his first-ever gig in Tenerife. Sir Tom will perform a one-off concert on 28th August at the fairground in Santa Cruz. On Wednesday he tweeted to his 518,000 followers: “Happy to let you know I’ll be performing at Recinto Ferial De Tenerife, 28th August. Tickets on sale tomorrow at 9am!” There are four ticket price bands for the gig, the cheapest being 65 euros, while golden VIP tickets will set you back a cool 200 euros. This does include the best seats in the house, an all-inclusive bar and a draw to meet Sir Tom himself. Tickets are on sale now. The Tenerife date is one of 28 concerts the 74-year-old will play this year. He has one other date in Spain, playing Girona’s Castell de Paralada festival in July, before performing a few dates in the British Festival calendar. Sir Tom, born Thomas John Woodward, has been recording and producing hit records for five decades. Songs such as It’s Not Unusual; What’s New Pussycat?; Green, Green Grass of Home and Delilah made him a household name.

Later, songs like Kiss, Sex Bomb, Stoned In Love and the No.1 single Islands In The Stream (with Robin Gibb, Rob Brydon and Ruth Jones) saw him wow a younger audience. Sir Tom has remained in the public eye as a judge on BBC’s talent show The Voice. He has won Brit Awards, Grammy Awards, MTV Video award and, in 2005, he was knighted by the Queen for services to music. His Tenerife gig follows in the footsteps of other members of British music royalty who have performed here recently. Sir Elton John, Rod Stewart and Simply Red all had hugelysuccessful concerts. But after a few years’ hiatus, maybe caused by the economic crisis, it seems the time is right for promoters to fire up the big guns. The announcement this week of the return of Marc Anthony wasn’t such a big surprise as it has been rumoured for a few weeks. He returns to Las Americas on 10th July, 24 hours after playing Las Palmas in Gran Ca-

naria, and it will be the fourth time Anthony has played Tenerife. In 2005 and 2006, over 30,000 people were treated to dazzling shows in Santa Cruz and then, two years later, the Las Americas football sta-

dium hosted his return. At the time he said: “Every time I’m in Tenerife, it feels like a hug.” He brought a 50-strong entourage along with his mega-famous wife Jennifer Lopez, and their then five-month-

old twins Max and Enme. Anthony and Lopez separated in 2011 and were divorced last summer. It didn’t take Anthony too long to remarry as he walked down the aisle with Shannon de Lima in November. He has been busy in the studio this year and it is believed that his Tenerife concert will be a mixture of new material, along with songs from his last album 3.0 and tracks from his vast back catalogue. Born in the Dominican Republic in 1968, he is a twotime Grammy and five-time Latin Grammy winner, selling more than 12 million albums worldwide. And in 2012 he was inducted into the Billboard Hall of Fame. The Tenerife gig is part of a large European tour, the Cambio de Piel World Tour, which takes its name from the second single from his latest album. Tickets go on sale

on Monday (4th May) priced at 40 euros (General), 80 euros (Premium) and 180 euros (Platinum). They can be purchased from www. entrees.es or the usual ticket outlets. On 21st August, the Heliodoro stadium in Santa Cruz will host Mana, who have been hailed as Mexico’s answer to U2! Mana are a hugelysuccessful rock act, who have won four Grammy Awards and seven Latin Grammy Awards, making them one of the most successful Spanish-speaking rock acts. The band, featuring Fher Olvero (vocals), Ulises Calleros (guitars), Juan Diego Calleros (bass) and Alex González (drums), were formed in 1986 in Guadalajara, Mexico. They signed for leading label Warner Music, which has led to their amazing sales around the world. And their 1999 MTV Unplugged CD saw them cross over into the non-Spanish market. To date, they have sold over 40 million albums worldwide. Their Tenerife gig is part of a comeback tour, which sees them playing 30 dates to promote Cama Incendiada. It is their first album in four years and only their fourth of the Millennium.

Stephen Hawking starring again at Starmus Festival THE successful Starmus Festival returns to Tenerife in 2016, promising to be the biggest and best one yet.

Following the phenomenal success of last year’s conference, the third event will be in honour of 2014 keynote speaker Stephen Hawking. The theoretical physicist dazzled during the Las Americas extravaganza during a monthlong stay. And this week, at London’s Royal Astronomical Society HQ, it was confirmed that Tenerife will host the Starmus Festival for the third time. It will take place between 27th June and 2nd July 2nd 2016, bringing together the world’s leading space travellers, stargazers, and astrophysicists for an interactive extravaganza, inviting the general public to discover the wonders of the cosmos through science, art, and music. Under the theme “Beyond the Horizon - Tribute to Stephen Hawking”, the 2016 event will take inspiration from the legendary man himself - and the notion that nothing is impossible! A comprehensive programme of events will include lectures from keynote speakers, round-table discussions, exclusive music performances, creative arts exhibitions, and visits to local observatories. “Astro-fans” will be delighted to learn that next year’s line-up of keynote speakers includes Hawking, Starmus Festival founder and leading astrophysicist Garik Israelian, and musician and astronomer Brian May. These big names will be joined by a line-up of the world’s leading scientists, astronauts, and Nobel Prize winners, including: *Neil deGrasse Tyson: Astrophysicist and science communicator *Eric Betzig: Physicist and 2014 Nobel Prize

winner in chemistry for “the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy” *Chris Hadfield: Astronaut and first Canadian commander of the International Space Station (2015) *Harry Kroto: English chemist and 1996 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry *Martin Rees: Astronomer Royal, professor of cosmology and astrophysics at the University of Cambridge *Adam Riess: Astronomer, physicist and Nobel Prize winner in

physics in 2011, who led a study for the High-z team who provided the first published evidence that the expansion of the

universe was accelerating and filled with dark energy *Russell Schweickart: Astronaut and scien-

tist, ex-NASA Apollo astronaut who logged over 4,000 hours of flight time for the US Air Force *Neil Turok: Scientist and professor of physics, and co-author of popular science book Endless Universe: Beyond the Big Bang *Kip Thorne: Astrophysicist, who has forged a career in writing and films. His latest project was Interstellar (2014), directed by Christopher Nolan Discussions will focus on pushing the boundaries of science and touching on subjects such as the blurring relationship between science and science fiction, and how technology will affect the future of humanity. The Starmus Festival, supported by Tenerife Cabildo, is the brainchild of Garik Israelian, an astrophysicist researcher at the IAC. He sits on a scientific advisory board, which includes Stephen Hawking, Brian May, legendary Russian cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, who became the first human to make a “space walk” back in 1965, and British ethologist and scientist Richard Dawkins. Israelian say: “Our aim is to make Starmus Festival a global brand that is recognised not just within academic circles but that inspires and captures the imagination of the wider general public who have an interest in space, stargazing, science, art, music, and sci-fi. “Following the success of Starmus II, which was the most ambitious, all-star festival in science, we are excited to be taking Starmus III to the next level. We are

delighted that Tenerife will again be hosting the festival as there really is no better setting to appreciate, first-hand, the wonders of the skies and learn about what is beyond the horizon.” One of the main social highlights planned is the “Teide Starmus Party,” a magical evening of stargazing in the company of professional astronomers and live music performances, set within the lunar-like landscape of Teide National Park and under the canopy of the Milky Way. The Teide National Park - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - is one of the world’s best stargazing locations because of its clear, dark skies, high altitude and low pollution. And it is recognised as a “Starlight Tourist Destination”. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso says: “Following the success of last year’s festival and a growing interest in stargazing as a popular excursion in Tenerife, we are delighted to host this prestigious event. “We hope the gathering of these great minds in one of the world’s stargazing capitals will inspire travel to and exploration of our wonderful Island.” There will also be a concert to round off the event. Brian May and the Tangerine Dream headlined the first event, and Rick Wakeman wowed the second Starmus. There is no news yet on who will do the honours next year, but with Peter Gabriel on the Starmus Board, there has to be a good chance the former Genesis front man will be the star attraction.

SPAIN’S legislators are putting the final touches to raise the minimum age for marriage from 14 to 16.

It follows children’s advocates expressing concerns that the current law leaves children vulnerable to forced marriages and exploitation. The new law, approved by a parliamentary justice commission on Tuesday, now goes to the senate. where it will probably be debated next week. While the marrying age in Spain is actually 18, the country’s law allows for two exceptions: a 16-year-old wanting to marry can do so with parental permission, and 14-year-olds can wed with a judge’s permission. Under the new legislation, children of 14 and 15 will no longer be able to marry, while 16-year-olds will have to receive permission from a judge, or parental consent, to marry. The reforms come after years of lobbying by children’s rights groups, said Gabriel GonzálezBueno, of Unicef in Spain. “There’s a risk that these young children are being forced into marriages, or being married off as a conse-

Spanish marriage age rise quence of an agreement in which they had little say,” he said. Raising the marrying age is an attempt to ensure that children have a say in the decisions that affect their lives, their education and their health, added González-Bueno. “These marriages, particularly in the case of young girls, often lead to an interruption of their studies.” The average age of newly-weds in Spain is 37.2 years for men and 34.1 for women, while the number of adolescents getting married is relatively small, said González-Bueno. In 2013, there was just one marriage involving a 14-year-old girl and another involving a 15-year-old girl. The numbers increased for 16-year-olds, with four boys and 31 girls married in 2013. “In general, we see a

gender imbalance in these marriages, with the girls more likely to be younger than the boys,” said GonzálezBueno. The Spanish Government made clear its intention to change the laws more than two years ago, and since then, the numbers have climbed. In the first six months of 2014, four girls and four boys were married at the age of 14, while nine girls and eight boys were married at 15. “We don’t know exactly what caused the increase, but it might have been in anticipation of the reforms being passed,” added González-Bueno. “Detailed information on exactly who is marrying at this young age is not available,” said Ana Sastre, of Save the Children in Spain. “Some have pointed to

certain religious groups, or Gypsy communities in Spain. But these groups aren’t likely to register these marriages with the state. I’m not sure our assumptions match what’s actually happening on the ground.” The reforms are an important step forward because they could help dissuade some, said Ms Sastre. “But they have to be accompanied by other measures, such as educational outreach programmes to highlight the benefits of making these decisions later in life.” She maintained that these types of programmes should be put

in place even once the minimum age is raised to 16 years. “It’s still an early age to be marrying,” she stressed. Reforms to the minimum age for marrying come as law-makers push forward with legislation to raise the age of sexual consent in Spain, which at 13 years ranks among the lowest in Europe. Children’s advocates have long pushed for changes, arguing that the legislation leaves minors vulnerable to sexual exploitation by adults.

5 CW

The new legislation, expected to come into effect in July, would raise the age to 16. Reforms to the age of sexual consent became a national debate in 2012, following the death of a 13-yearold girl, killed by her 39-year-old lover in the village of El Salobral, near Albacete. The girl’s parents had alerted the authorities to the relationship, but police said they could not intervene because the relationship was legal and consensual.

Rajoy visits Canaries... SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will visit the archipelago in a few days as he starts electioneering ahead of the regional and municipal elections. Rajoy has chosen Catalonia to open the campaign for the 24th May vote, and he will be in Tarragona on 8th May. He will then visit the Canary Islands the fol-

lowing day, but the exact programme has not yet been revealed. Rajoy is said to be keen to get among the people ahead of the crucial elections, and he will be straight out of the blocks on 8th May, the first day of official campaigning. The PM will attend a Tarragona rally in the morning, before visiting the Barcelona Motor Show.

DAVID Cameron’s UK Government was dealt a sharp blow this week when a preliminary estimate showed that the economic recovery slowed sharply in the first quarter of the year, with GDP growth of 0.3%.

It’s not the best news for Tory Prime Minister Cameron with the General Election just six days away, on 7th May. The quarterly figure was much lower than economists had predicted - just half the rate of growth measured in the previous three months. Statistics showed that the economy remained under pressure in key areas, including the building industry, in which output fell for the second successive quarter. With the economy a central theme of the Election campaign, the news was gleefully acknowledged by Labour as evidence that UK PLC was far from fixed in the wake of the finan-

Cameron’s economy setback cial crisis. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said that Britain, during the first three months of the year, recorded its slowest growth since the fourth quarter of 2012, with output halving quarteron-quarter. The annual rate of GDP growth slowed to 2.4% from the 2.8% measured in the final quarter of 2014. The service sector, which accounts for 75% of all goods and services in the economy, grew by 0.5% in the first quarter, slowing from 0.9% in the previous three months. The ONS said it had

charted the weakest growth in business services and finance since the end of 2010. Industrial output fell slightly - hit by weaker oil and gas output in the North Sea - as the price of oil dived on world markets. The building figure was the stand-out number, with output tumbling by 1.6%. The industry was hit by a number of factors, including a shortage of skilled labourers. However, the ONS said that Tuesday’s statistics showed the UK economy was 4% above its pre-crisis peak and

Paper puzzle of driving licences BRITISH motorists coming to Tenerife after 8th June will have to carry a special code with them if they want to hire a car.

That’s because the paper counterpart of British driving licences - which records endorsements and fines is being computerised. Anyone keen to hire a car abroad could need that code to show convictions for offences like speeding. To obtain it, motorists will have to log on to the DVLA website beforehand. But the code is valid for just 72 hours, so anyone wanting a car for more than three days into their trip may need to generate a new code while abroad. For those who do not have internet access, a phone number will

also be made available. However, the code is not an official requirement - and it will depend on the individual hire company’s terms whether it is required. But the RAC believe many drivers not know of the planned change, and spokesman Simon Williams said: “Our research shows that with just over a month to go, 55% of drivers are not aware of what is happening.” The DVLA recommends destroying paper counterparts after 8th June. But the AA advises people to hang on to the document, in case some hire companies don’t know about the new arrangements. “Not all car-rental companies, or indeed traffic police abroad, will be aware of the changes, so a ‘belt and braces’ approach of also taking the counterpart might help,” said AA president Ed-

mund King. But the AA also stressed that hiring a car abroad without a paper counterpart is not always a problem. Just as some car-hire companies do not currently ask for a counterpart, not all will ask for a code after the deadline date. The old-style paper licences, issued before the photo card was introduced in 1998, will remain valid, but holders will still need a code to validate them fully. To view a record of their convictions, motorists can log on to the View My Driving licence page of the government website. They will need their driving licence number, their national insurance number and their postcode. But the changes do not apply to driving licences issued by the DVA in Northern Ireland.

8.4% larger than 2010, when the coalition Government took office. Chancellor George Osborne told Sky News: “Today is a reminder that the recovery cannot be taken for granted, and that the economy is on the ballot paper at this election.” S h a d o w Chancellor Ed Balls

said working families could not afford another five years of Conservative government. He added: “While the Tories have spent months patting themselves on the back, these figures show they have not fixed the economy for working families.” The

TUC union group said the performance showed the country needed a “new plan”. Frances O’Grady, its General Secretary, said: “The slowest recovery in modern history just slowed down again. “This is bad news for jobs and living standards. What’s more, Conservative plans for extreme cuts after the Election risk completely killing off this faltering recovery and plunging the economy back into even deeper trouble.” But CBI Director-General John Cridland said: “Growth slowed, but checking the temperature with our members and surveys hints that the economy is more resilient than these figures might suggest. “Prospects for this year remain bright, with lower oil prices and inflation continuing to support growth. “A strengthening Pound means manufacturers are fighting a loss of competitiveness in the euro area, threatening to knock our exports performance.”

Decision Day BY this time next week, it will be all over and we can get back to some form of normality. Maybe.

Even my best-placed source in the corridors of power is uncertain quite how the General Election will go. Unless he makes an unbelievable error, then I’m sure David Cameron’s Conservatives will have the most elected MPs. Come Thursday when the curtain is closed and it’s just you and a voting slip, you will ask yourself the following: “Which party will make me safer? Which party will move us forward?” And the most important question by a million miles: “Who will make me better off?” “It’s the economy stupid,” is the truest four words you will hear on Election Day. And it’s the one subject Miliband, Farage, Sturgeon and even Clegg have been desperate to avoid. It’s the same in Spain. Mariano Rajoy’s Popular Party is all over

the place and mired in sleaze. But it has done a fine job, turning the country around economically. Money talks. And he is still the most likely PM come November. Ditto Cameron. Like Obama, he has disappointed as leader, but his mistakes have been relatively minor. The disappointment is based on the fact that we expected so much more. Russell Brand, Ed Balls and a bacon sandwich have done for Ed Miliband, while Nick Clegg could even lose his seat. Nigel Farage is unlikely to win one. His UKIP bandwagon has fallen off a cliff. The three questions above has done for him, as has the awful migrant drownings in the Med. You see in public, in the pub and on the street, when the little old ladies ask you your voting intentions, a lot of people lie. They go with the flow. Once behind that curtain, in private, they show their true colours.

Stay safeR in your car IN days of old, train passengers were warned against leaning out of the window, because of the risk of decapitation from a passing locomotive.

But it is also very much a risk when it comes to travelling by car. Not just the head, of course, but all extremities such as arms and legs should be kept inside the protective shell of the vehicle. As the weather starts to get hotter, it may be tempting to relax into the false sense of security that summer cruising might suggest. But sticking your head, arms or legs out of the window is not a good idea. There are countless documented cases of motorists suffering serious injury when “clipped” by a passing car, as well as the more gruesome stories of the loss of limbs in the event of a crash. Having an arm out of the window also poses a risk to other road-users

such as cyclists and motorcyclists. Being able to put your head out of the window implies that the seatbelt is not worn correctly. If your body parts are not within the safety cage of the vehicle, then you are at risk - and are risking others. Arms extended from the vehicle may also confuse other roadusers, who might think you are giving handsignals, thus posing a risk that those drivers may react incorrectly to what they think you are gesturing. Visibility may also be obscured as a result, blocking the vehicle´s mirrors and making it difficult to observe the surroundings correctly. Even within the vehicle, there is a serious risk of injury if you are not sitting correctly. An all-too-common sight in the summer months, in

particular, is a car passenger with his/her feet up on the dashboard. It is an illegal and also extremely dangerous. In the event of a crash,a passenger travelling with feet on the dashboard, could suffer dreadfully because the deployment of the airbag can cause more serious injuries than it prevents in this situation. And, irrespective of an airbag being present, glass from the windscreen can cause terrible injuries, not to mention the effects of a passenger being crushed by the impact between the dashboard and the seat. Proper posture, not only important for avoiding niggles such as back or neck pain, is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the safety features designed for the vehicle. In fact, all vehicle oc-

cupants must always maintain a proper position while riding in the vehicle. Article 18, Section 1 of Royal Decree 1428/2003 of 21st November, approving the Rules of the road, states: “Driver of vehicles must maintain their own freedom of movement, the required field of vision and permanent attention to driving, to ensure their own safety, that of other vehicle occupants and other road-users. To achieve this, you must take special care to maintain the proper position, and that of the passengers, and the proper placement of objects or animals transported so that there can be no interference between the driver and any of them.” Keeping both hands on the steering wheel, not leaning with an elbow on the window and keeping your arms inside the vehicle may have been the repetitive messages our driving instructor taught us when we first took lessons. But the advice is still very much key to a safe driving experience.

Young GB gymnast paralysed in plunge

BRITISH gymnast Dina AmosLarkin has been left paralysed from the neck down after falling 50ft from a hotel balcony.

The 21-year-old law student, who represents Great Britain’s trampoline team, was at a fourday cheerleader festival in Salou, Catalonia, when she fell while talking to her mother on the phone on 3rd April. Dina, from Poole, Dorset, who captains the Angels’ cheer-leading squad at Surrey University, was in a medicallyinduced coma for two weeks. She was informed of her dreadful injuries when she was brought round nearly two weeks ago. The gymnast told the Sunday Mirror’s that authorities initially said the fall, from a fourthfloor balcony at Hotel Jaime 1, was a suicide bid. “That isn’t the case,” she said. “I spent the day doing sport and went drinking in the evening but I wasn’t drunk. The balcony rail was lower than my waist and I think I just leaned back too far.” She claims she is now stranded in hospital, awaiting her insurer, AXA, to review her case. A GoFundMe page has since been set up to raise £20,000 to get her home - and more than £13,900 had already been donated by Monday. The page reads: “Dina

Larkin suffered horrendous injuries, including paralysis, when she fell from a balcony during a student festival in Barcelona. “Dina is an international gymnast and aspiring law student. But most of all she is a daughter, a sister and a friend to many. “Her recovery has been halted because the costs of getting her back to the UK amount to over £10,000. And then there’s the adaptive care she will need when she is home.” Her mother Audrey, 48, and father Stephen, 49, told the Sunday Mirror: “Our hearts are broken and we just want her home.” The hotel street has lots of high-rise apartments, with white rails lining each balcony Diana issued her last Tweet a week before the incident, posting a photo of the cheerleading squad and writing: “These kids know the score! @Surreyangels brought it home.” She added a picture of the sea on Instagram five days later and wrote: “Enjoying that ocean spray. Let’s hope it can cure this hangover #TOUR #spain #sunshine #ocean #saloufest #coastline #teamsurreytour2015.” An AXA spokesman said: “We are looking into the circumstances and, until those investigations have been completed, it would not be appropriate to comment further. “We are speaking to Dina and assisting with her repatriation.’”

Spain is king of corruption SPAIN is reckoned to be the European Union’s most corrupt country - by Spaniards themselves, according to a study which measured people’s perceptions.

Researchers from Statista asked participants across the EU nations: “Are you affected by corruption in daily life?” Curiously, 63% of Spaniards answered “Yes,” which was the highest number of all EU nations. But Spaniards are not the only ones who distrust their country. A separate study found that the majority of Germans also consider Spain to be unreliable and corrupt. The study was released by Spanishbased research o r-

ganisation Real Institute Elcano. This study also found that 49% of Germans do not find the Spanish reliable - a feeling which has more than doubled over the last 10 years. In 1996, the same study found that just 20% of Germans felt the same way. The research was released because Spain is embroiled in several corruption scandals. Some of the more severe include what has been dubbed the “wind plot” in the region of Castilla and Leon, where two prominent politicians have been accused of au-

thorising wind farms in exchange for bribes. And earlier this month, Spain’s Public Prosecutor also accused the country’s former Economy Minister and Rodrigo Rato, former Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), of moneylaundering and tax fraud while in office.

According to Statista, other countries where people perceived high rates of corruption in their own nation were Greece (63%) and Cyprus (51%). Countries where corruption is the least apparent is Germany and France (6%), with Denmark rating just 3%.

DIY tests may lead to HIV revolution THE first legallyapproved selftest kit for Aids, enabling people to get a result in 15 minutes at home, has gone on sale in England, Scotland and Wales.

And unlike other kits, the test does not have to be sent to a lab to get the results. It works by detecting antibodies, on a small drop of blood, which are often detectable only three months after the infection is caught. Experts warn that any positive tests must be reconfirmed at clinics. Charities hope it will reduce some of the 26,000

people estimated to have undiagnosed aids in the UK. An early diagnosis allows people to get treatment quickly and can prevent serious complications. And individuals successfully treated for HIV are less likely to pass on the infection. This new DIY test is made by the Bio Sure UK company and can be bought online. It works in a similar way to a pregnancy test, measuring levels of antibodies - proteins made in response to the virus - in a person’s blood. The device analyses a small droplet of blood, taken from the fingertip using a lancet. Two purple lines appear if it is positive. The company recommends attending sexual

health clinics for advice, and further blood tests if both lines appear. And even if the test proves negative, experts say it does not mean people are definitely Aids-free - especially if exposure occurred in the last three months. The three-month window period, between the moment someone catches the infection and the time it can take for antibodies to develop, means the kit is not reliable during this time. Charities have welcomed the test, hoping it will encourage more people to get checks particularly those reluctant to go to clinics at first. Dr Rosemary Gillespie, chief executive at Terrence Higgins Trust, said: “We campaigned

for a long time to secure the legalisation of HIV self-test kits, which happened in April 2014, so it is great to see the first self-test kits being approved. “However, it is important to make sure people can get quick access to support when they get their result.” The charity’s Shaun Griffin added: “At the moment, there are funding challenges throughout the NHS, including for sexual-health services. It is absolutely critical that people have access to HIV tests and advice they need. Free HIV tests are available across the NHS. And Northern Ireland ministers are considering legal changes to allow the sale of hometesting kits.

Queen pays tribute to plane-tragedy victims QUEEN Letizia opened her heart to comfort grieving families of some victims of the Germanwings plane crash at Tuesday’s moving memorial service in Barcelona. Paying their respects along with the Queen and husband King Felipe were leading dignitaries, including Prime Minister Marinao Rajoy, Vice-President Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, Minister for Justice Rafael Catalá, Minister for Home Affairs Jorge Fernández Daz, Minister for Public Works Ana Pastor, Speakers of the Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament, Pío García-Escudero and Jesús Posada, respectively, Francisco Pérez de los Cobos, Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court, together with Artur Mas, President of Catalonia’s Regional Government, and his wife, Elena. Representatives from various countries and rescue teams were also present.

The disastrous Flight 9525, en-route from Barcelona to Dusseldorf with 144 passengers and six crew members on board - including 50 Spaniards - was steered heartlessly into the side of a mountain. It crashed headlong into the French Alps on 26th March when deranged co-pilot Andreas Lubitz locked the captain out of the aircraft’s cockpit. He then put the flight on a descent path, which sent it smashing into a mountain.

The King and Queen embraced grieving families at Barcelona’s Sagrada Familia basilica as they remembered those who lost their lives in the terrifying crash. The ceremony was also attended by 150 pupils from Barcelona secondary school Giola de Llinars del Vallès, where a group of Germany school-children who perished had taken part in a school-exchange programme. Dressed in black, a

sombre-looking Queen and the King prayed for the victims during the service, which began with a recitation of “Let the Earth Praise the Lord” in several languages. The memorial service in effect a Catholic Mass - was led by Lluís Martínez Sistach, Cardinal and Archbishop of Barcelona. Other Christian, Jewish and Muslim religious leaders attended the service in the enormous cathedral, which was packed with 1,000 mourners. And just as many people gathered outside to listen to the service. Aviation industry doctors have since demanded that German pilots have more extensive medical checks, while several airlines worldwide have changed rules to require two crew in cockpits at all times. Lufthansa, parent company of Germanwings, cancelled its 60th anniversary celebrations set for this month.

Mother’s Day celebrations SPANISH Mothers’ Day on Sunday in Adeje will feature a range of activities, laid on by the local Council.

In fact, its Department of Economic Development, in conjunction with the alternative training programme, PFAE Convive Adeje, has developed a programme of activities designed to promote local commerce throughout the year. And among the campaigns is the Mother’s Day celebrations, featuring promotions, discounts, special offers, in various shops, bars, cafes and restaurants

throughout the town, with over 80 local companies taking part. The Department has designed a commemorative programme throughout the week with a series of activities at different points of the borough. They include the parque César Manrique in La Postura, the Callao Salvaje plaza, the La Caleta playground and, finally, the playground in Tijoco-La Hoya tomorrow (Saturday), with a family day of activities, starting at 10am. If you are buying for your mum this Mother’s Day, you are encouraged to spend locally and keep Adeje businesses working.

Health Minister’s unhealthy row JIM Wells, Health Minister of Northern Ireland, who is embroiled in a controversy over gay couples, has stood down.

The resignation follows his remarks at a hustings, where he linked same-sex relationships to child abuse. He later apologised for those comments. Wells said he wanted to help his wife, Grace, “during her fight for life”. But police are also investigating an incident involving a lesbian couple during an election canvas by Mr Wells in County Down. The Police Service of Northern Ireland is understood to be trying to establish whether an offence has been committed. Mr Wells, a Westminster candidate for the DUP in the South Down constituency, said in a statement on Monday that he was no longer able to continue his ministerial duties to give his wife “the One of the women who complained to police about

Mr Wells told BBC Radio Ulster’s William Crawley: “As many people are aware, I have been focused on helping my wife during her fight for life. “Those who know my family and I, know the last three months have been the toughest of our lives as we watched my wife, Grace, suffer two successive strokes and battle through major heart surgery. “However, as she now faces further challenges, I have come to the point where I am no longer able to continue my ministerial duties and give Grace the attention she deserves.” He said he had met with Northern Ireland first minister and DUP leader Peter Robinson and requested to stand down from ministerial office. The PSNI said it had received three complaints about the conduct of “an individual” in Rathfriland in County Down on Saturday evening. It is alleged that Mr Wells, who was door-todoor canvassing, called at a lesbian couple’s house and was critical of their lifestyle during a conversation. The daughter of one of the women said h e r

mother was upset. She said Mr Wells returned to the house twice, saying he wanted to say sorry. But the couple would not accept his apology, because, they claimed, Mr Wells did not agree with their lifestyle choice. Finance Minister Simon Hamilton will take on some of Mr Wells’s duties. Northern Ireland First Minister Mr Robinson said he respected Mr Wells’s decision and that he was right to put his family first. “I will fully support him,” he added. Sinn Féin MLA Maeve McLaughlin said of the resignation: “Mr Wells has clearly been under increased pressure as a result of his wife’s serious illness, and his decision to step down was the right thing to do. “However, his position as Health Minister was clearly untenable after his attack on the LGBT community, which was completely unacceptable from someone holding the position.” Ulster Unionist leader Mikes Nesbitt said the controversy caused by Mr Wells’s comments about same-sex relationships did not affect the unionist pact between the DUP and the UUP, in four constituencies, because the pact related to one issue - a pro-union stance. Alliance leader David Ford said: “Peter Robinson was entirely aware of Jim’s views at the point when he made him ;Minister of Health. The real question is - what does that say about the leadership of the DUP that they’re prepared to put somebody with those kind of views into such a sensitive post with all the responsibility it has?”

Pope is committed to climate-change issue THE Vatican Science Academy has urged Christians to take action on climate change because it threatens the world’s poor.

The Academy was addressed on the issue by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at Tuesday’s conference, “Protect the Earth, Dignify Humanity”, held behind St Peter’s Basilica. It comprised 20 religious leaders, 20 academicians and 20 scientists, including Nobel prize-winning atmospheric chemist Paul Crutzen and former Royal Society President Lord Rees. Pope Francis is next month set to deliver an Encyclical (official statement), on the dangers of heating the climate. And Bishop Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, who heads the Academy, told BBC News that Christians were obliged to be stewards

of the Earth and protect the poor - which meant taking action to safeguard the climate. He said the oil industry was “fomenting distrust of science in the US because it did not want society to change”. The Pontiff has always preached about protecting the world as part of a broad message on the environment, and it has stirred up little controversy so far. But as he prepares to deliver his highlyinfluential Encyclical, he is alarming some US conservatives, loath to see the Catholic Church reposition itself as a mighty voice in a cause they do not believe in. The accord would, for the first time, commit every nation to enact tough new laws to cut the emissions said to be causing global warming. Vatican officials, who have spent more than a year helping the Pontiff prepare his message, have convened several

meetings already on the topic. The Encyclical will be accompanied in the US by a 12-week campaign to raise the issue of climate change and environmental stewardship in sermons, homilies, news-media interviews and letters to newspaper editors, said Dan Misleh, executive director of the Catholic Climate Covenant in Washington. Bishop Sorondo said it was important for the world’s 1.2bn Catholics to take it seriously. If any of them wanted to ignore it, he or she would need “very good reasons - based not on personal or political opinion, but on science”. For some Catholics, this may prove an unwelcome Papal intervention into a highly-politicised subject. Yet aid agency Cafod’s poll with YouGov showed that 70% of Catholics say their community will heed the Pope’s climatechange message.

Adeje’s passes tap-water tests ADEJE’S Municipal Laboratory tests have emphasised just how good the tap water is in the borough, thanks to “important improvements”. The borough continues to have the second-highest number of tap-water controls in the Canaries, just behind Las Palmas, in Gran Canaria. The Lab report also underlines that during the whole of 2014, the water met all the required standards. It carried out 236 analysis of consumer tap water in total, and its report stated: “Control of the quality of tap water is a top priority for Adeje Council, as is meeting all the require standards and following the national and regional laws designed to guarantee that water from the taps is apt for consumption, healthy and clean for the people.” The excellent data is also a direct result of on-going inversion in the waterworks by the Council, and water-provision service Aqualia

Entemanser, with new installations such as the desalination plant in La Caleta. The municipal lab continues to abide by the Royal Decree 140/2003, which regulates levels of smell, colour, turbidity, conductivity, pH, ammonia, coliform bacteria, e.coli, copper, nickel, iron, chlorine, etc. As well as these indicators, the lab also carries out tests on the water in different channels to determine levels of boron and chlorides. As for conductivity, the tests show a marked improvement since 2008, with levels now below 1000s/cm, which is considered to be a mediumhigh level of mineralisation. Last year in Adeje, the level of water in home taps was, on average, at 250700s/cm. Just over half of the samples tested were taken

from private homes, and the rest from installations and public buildings, or commercial centres. Adeje now has 30 supply points, the most concentrated in the Las Torres zone, which supply over 26,000 homes. Over 75% of Adeje’s residents use water from a combination of sources: dams, water galleries, and desalination plants. The remainder get their water exclusively from dams and water galleries. And on-going improvements should see a series of improvements to current installations alongside the Aqualia-Entemanser company to homogenise water quality thro-ughout the borough.

THE face of antiwrinkle treatment is changing with the rapid rise of injectables, Botox and fillers.

And rather than just smoothing or tightening skin, an injectable filler aims to change the facial profile to a more youthful one. Fillers The injection of filler materials under the skin can fill in deep folds, such as nasolabial folds (laugh lines), create fuller lips and pad-out hollow cheeks and eyes.

1st May - 7th May 2015

The easier way to make a more beautiful you

Collagen used to be the standard filler, but now hyaluronic acid, with brand names like Juvéderm of Allergans, are recognised as best-quality fillers. Hyaluronic acid fillers last 6-12 months; synthetic fillers such as Radiesse 1218 months. The cost of a single unit of nonfat filler is about 500600 euros. The injections hurt, and the pain will vary, depending on the patient and the area being injected. Anaesthetic is generally used for the lips, as the injections cause

a burning and stinging. The anti-ageing properties of botulinum toxin (sold as Botox and Dysport) are probably behind many well-preserved faces in Hollywood, and can be found closer to home, too. When injected, botox relaxes muscles, preventing skin from creasing and causing wrinkles. It is effective for “expression lines”, such as frown and surprise lines on the forehead, crow’s feet around the eyes, and “turkey neck” lines on the throat. Botox This is a prescriptiononly drug, although people who aren’t medical professionals do inject it. This can be done by non-doctors obtaining prescriptions from doctors or, in the case of beauty clinics, having one doctor ostensibly

supervising multiple non-medical injectors, without actually being in the room during the procedure. But beware of going down the bargain-basement path because botulinum is a potent, bacterial neurotoxin, and there are consequences if it’s not used correctly. Non-invasive procedures like fillers and Botox are considered low risk, but that does not mean no risk. Most risks are minor, but they are there. The cost of Botox depends on how much is injected. The number of units you’ll need will depend on how active your muscles are. The pain has been described as similar to that of an ant bite, lasting for a few seconds. The effects of Botox facial injections typically last three to four months, but

they can last longer with ongoing treatment. With the smoothing properties of Botox being touted far and wide, there have been some reports of young people - including teenagers having so-called “preventative” Botox. The message is that if you start young, you can stop wrinkles from ever appearing in the first place. But it is recommended not to use Botox if you are under 18. Botox is a commonlyprescribed drug for a host of non-cosmethic medical conditions. It can help those with MS and cerebral palsy, as well as people suffering from teeth-grinding, incontinence and more. Botox can also treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) by paralysing the sweat glands. It can also be used on

the armpits, face, hands and feet. The downside is that injections in the hands and feet can be painful. Choose a qualified medical doctor - or supervised by one - to perform the procedure. Have a consultation before committing to the injectables, and ask for a treatment plan to outline how much work you need, and how often you’ll have to return. The Medical Implant clinic in Los Abrigos offers treatments in aesthetic medicine, with excellent quality in all products, always using always recognised, worldwide brand names. Pharmacist handed out 875,000 drugs A PHARMACIST in Northern Ireland has been given a one-year sentence for supplying around 875,000 prescription drugs illegally.

Maurice Currie, 45, from Lisburn, pleaded guilty to 12 counts of supplying controlled drugs, from January 2009 to December 2013. They cost the pharmacy where he worked, some £60,000 and were worth about 10 times as much on the street. They were a mixture of sleeping tablets and anti-depressants and included 145,000 Tramadol, 165,000 Diazepam and 240,000 co-codamol. Currie’s defence claimed that a man from west Belfast had been the dominant force behind a vast number of the missing 875,000 tablets at the Railway Street business in Armagh. During court proceedings the man, named in a police interview with Currie, was said to have a “particularly violent background”. A defence barrister said Currie was a man of “good character who caved into his oppressor after falling into depression following the death of his mother”. The prosecution accepted that Currie had made no financial

gain from the missing pills. Currie was also labelled as a “soft touch”, who gave out tens of thousands of prescription drugs “over and beyond GP consent” to 12 members of the public. He was suspected by the Department of Health’s medical regulatory group (MRG) initially when an audit was carried out at the pharmacy in September 2013. A 44,000-tablet deficit was found. Several further audits were carried out as it became clear that hundreds of thousands of prescription drugs were missing. In a “panic, knee-jerk reaction” attempt to cover up his tracks, Currie ordered three deliveries of Tramadol and Zopiclone tablets, which were discovered during one of the MRG audits. The Newry Crown Court judge said: “It is accepted that he succumbed to the criminality after the death of his mother, in which he suffered depression that could be considered posttraumatic stress disorder. “This is man of good character and I will give him significant credit for that. In some ways, he tried to be helpful to people who could not get an appointment with their GP. He has now lost his job over this.” Currie was given 12 months on each count, to run concurrently.

Diet Pepsi’s not so keen on sweetener AN artificial sweetener, said to be controversial in the US, is being removed from Diet Pepsi there amid consumer concerns about its safety.

It means that aspartame-free cans of the drink will go on sale from August in the States, but not in Britain, where it is deemed safe. In fact, regulators in both countries insist aspartame is still safe to use in soft drinks. And PepsiCo says its decision is commercial, responding to consumer preferences. Last year, sales in Diet Pepsi fell by more than 5% in the US, while sales of Diet Coke, which also contains aspartame, decreased by more than 6%. PepsiCo says it will replace aspartame with another sweetener - sucralose - mixed with acesulfame potassium (Ace-K). Seth Kaufman, Pepsi Vice-President, said: “Aspartame is the No.1 reason consumers are dropping diet soda.” In tests, Mr Kaufman said, people still recognised the reformulated drink to be Diet Pepsi, but it might have a “slightly different mouth-feel”. There are no plans to change ingredients in the UK, and a . company spokesman said: “Consumers there love Diet Pepsi just as it is. “Pepsi uses a variety

of approved sweetener options to create greattasting colas, including aspartame, which remains an important sweetener in some Pepsi beverages around the world.” The change applies to the US m a r k e t o n l y and will affect all varieties of Diet Pepsi, such as Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi a n d W i l d Cherry D i e t Pepsi. It will not apply to other P e p s i C o drinks, s u c h as Diet Mount a i n Dew. A s p a r -

tame has sparked controversy since it was first approved in the Eighties, despite being one of the most thoroughly-tested and studied-food additives. Aspartame, also known as E951, is about 200 times sweeter than sugar, but contains very f e w c a l o ries. Thousands of foods and d r i n k s around the world use it as a sugar substitute, including breakfast cereals and sugarfree chewing gum. F o o d s a f e t y experts have been keeping its use under close

scrutiny since a number of anecdotal reports pointed to potential side-effects. A 2005 study by the Ramazzini Foundation in Bologna, Italy, claimed to have shown that rats given dosages of aspartame equivalent to those in humans could develop tumours. But European regulators who assessed this research, were not convinced and concluded that aspartame could still be used as a food additive. The US Food and Drug Administration says there are more than 100 studies that support aspartame’s safety. But regulators agree that there should be a limit to how much of the sweetener people consume. An adult would have to drink 14 cans of a sugar-free drink every day to reach this limit. And some people with an inherited disease called phenylketonuria, or PKU, cannot consume aspartame.

Not the tastiest dish!

By Mariano Zunino Siri

I HAVE received several letters with reference to the Community of Owners’ issue. I will try to reply to them (I have written privately) through this column. Thanks to all Canarian Weekly readers. Subject: Parabolic private area

Please can you advise on a problem which I am sure affects not only ourselves but other owners on a residential complex in Tenerife. Our neighbour has installed a bright-yellow satellite dish on his roof. Not only is this unsightly but it spoils what was our wonderful view of the ocean. Is he allowed to install a satellite dish without permission, and what, if anything, can be done about it? Our neighbour refuses to compromise by installing the satellite dish on the side of his villa or to receive his TV chan-

nels, as we do, via the internet D&S I assume that you and your neighbour live in the same complex which is regulated by the Horizontal Division Law (Community of Owners), with Statutes and Internal Rules. In these cases, different laws apply. On one side the Horizontal Division Law, and on the other side the Royal Decree-Law 1/98, which regulates the right of owners and lessees to install a parabolic in the complex as per their right of information. In fact, European rules also guarantee the right of information. The Horizontal Division Law, in accordance with Royal Decree-Law, states that a special

majority of owners (1/3 of owners representing 1/3 of quota) is needed to install the dish (parabolic). If this majority is not obtained, the interested owner must ask the Community to let him/ her install it in common areas, but only those interested have to pay the costs. As you can see, there could be a collision between these different rules. The right of the owners to have information and the rights of the Community regulated in the Statutes. In this case, the right of the owner to have information (satellite TV) and the right of the other owners affected. It is recommended that a position is found between the owner and the Community. And to

this purpose, the role of the Administrator is very important to reach an agreement. This is a very complicated matter when there is a dispute. Where can the dish be installed? Normally in common areas designated to such use (antennas), such as the roof of the building or special platform. It is recommended that the Statutes and the Horizontal Division Deed establish the place to allocate them. Can they be installed in a private area? Only if it is not possible to install it in a common area, bearing in mind that it has to match municipal regulations. I have not mentioned the Civil Code rules, also applicable in many cases, as it exceeds the

purpose of this column. But through these rules, the dish could be removed (for instance) if affects the views of other neighbours. There is no uniformity in jurisprudence. Take into account that in all cases, it is important to install the dish according to the technical specifications, and without damaging the structure of the building or affecting the rights of other owners. Every case is different and must be particularly studied. This is just a general view of the matter and there are different opinions. This is my one, subject to a better one. The Spanish are coming! TOURISM is booming ... and not just from foreign shores. Tenerife Cabildo confirmed this week that the Spanish market is starting to warm up. In the first quarter of 2015, the Island welcomed 194,993 domestic tourists, which was an increase of 6.5% compared with last year. “These figures are positive and show the Spanish tourism expansion since last December,” said delighted Cabildo President Carlos Alonso “It is four months of continuous growth. “Our campaign to get more domestic

tourism, following clear signs of economic recovery, is paying off, and over the winter we saw an increase of 2.6% of nationals staying.” Meanwhile, the British market continues to shine. In the first three months of the year, the number of Brits visiting grew by 4.8% percent a total of 390,405. And the German market has also swelled since 2014, at 167,058 holiday-makers. The French market achieved a first-quarter growth of 9.3% and a total of 45,846 visitors, while the Italian market is a massive 24.7% higher.

But the number of Nordic, Dutch, Belgian, Russian and Swiss was slightly lower. In the first 13 weeks of the year, a total of 204,224 tourists stayed in the North of the Island, while South Tenerife clocked up 973,484. Alonso said: “2014 was a record year for international tourists on the Island. We know it is very difficult to maintain growth rates, especially with the competition of other destinations in the Mediterranean, and we are seeing that by the weakness shown by the Nordic and Russian markets.”

THE Spanish property market attracted more interest from British investors than from any other, according to research from overseas specialist Conti.

Some 54% of all enquiries received by Conti in the first quarter of 2015 were from British investors about Spain, as they reclaimed the top spot from the French. It’s a clear sign of the Spanish property market’s recovery, which was shrouded in doom and gloom only a few years ago. The Spanish market had been “dogged by over-supply and plung-

most investors kept well clear of it. However, things are looking much

Banks’ customer ID reprieve SPANISH banks have had two years to implement new legislation, designed to stop fraud and money laundering.

And just like civilians at the end of the financial year, they have waited until the last minute, only to discover that they do not have enough time to make the necessary changes. This head-shaking re-

ality has led to banks being given an 11-day reprieve before important new regulations become law. The original deadline was midnight Thursday, when financial institutions had to ensure that all their customers could be verified via a digitalised DNI system. This means copies of updated passports, identity cards or similar had to be held by the banks. And many of them had to be checked and stored at the host branch. Some forward-think-

ing banks and branches started this process a while ago, but some literally left it until the last week, claiming they were under staffed or under-resourced. This doesn’t wash, when you consider this action was rubberstamped in 2013. New customers’ details were already validated, but long-standing or irregular customers faced having their accounts frozen. However, this isn’t a Doomsday scenario. An account will be automatically reacti-

vated once the documentation had been received. Cristina de Farias, director of BBVA Spain and Portugal, said: “We have completed over 90% digitisation of the ID of the customer base. And the rest will be processed very quickly now.” There are about 80 million accounts in Spain, of which 50 million are private. It is believed that some banks will be using the May Day weekend to get accounts up to date.

down even further with some very motivated sellers mean that it’s most certainly a buyer’s market,” said Ms Nessling. “This, together with historically low interest rates and the growing strength of the pound, is making it much more affordable to buy there. And signs that the market is improving are starting to lift the confidence of prospective buyers.” The euro was weakened by the European Central Bank’s quantitative-easing programme earlier this year, and it fell to an eight-year low against the British Pound. After a slight rebound, the euro/pound rate is now steadily moving back towards that eight-year low. It means that those looking to swap Pounds for euros are finding the European property market very attractive, and Spanish property is particularly cheap at the moment. Research shows that property prices in some parts of Spain have more than halved since the financial crisis. The average price of a Spanish residential property fell by a staggering 41.5%, according to data from valuation firm Tinsa. However, the data does suggest that, after seven years of massive declines, the Spanish property market is at

last approaching price stability. The report concluded that the annual rate of decline slowed to 3.1% in the first quarter of 2015, more than half the 6.7% rate seen in Q1 2014 and an improvement on the 4.5% annual depreciation recorded in Q4 of last year. A wide variety of regional variations were also noted in the report. The sharpest falls in property prices came from Andalucia, where the annual depreciation rate of 4.1% outpaced the national average. However, the annual rate in Andalucia still showed signs of significant improvement. Of the eight provinces, Cadiz appeared to be faring best as prices almost achieved stability. Data showed a fall of just 0.7% in average prices over the last 12 months. In Cordoba and Jaen, the depreciation rate was similar to the national average, at 2.8% and 3.1% respectively. However, the other five provinces of Spain showed that prices continue to outpace the country’s declines as a whole. The World’s Most Photographed BBC2, 16:00

Series which unearths photographs previously lost or suppressed, to explore the power of the image and the nature of iconography. It decodes the carefully constructed public image of ten of the world’s most photographed people to reveal more about the personalities, lives and intentions of the subjects. Adolf Hitler, the first state leader to have a totally manufactured image, used photography to hypnotise and corrupt a nation. In the 1930s, the photographer Heinrich Hoffmann transformed the young camerashy politician into a figure of absolute power, helping to mastermind one of the most successful campaigns of mass-manipulation in history. Previously unseen private images of Hitler have been unearthed, taken by the photographers closest to him, including his mistress Eva Braun and his favourite photographer Walter Frentz - the man who had the opportunity to assassinate Hitler in 1944.

ITV1, 21.00

Home Fires is a new six-part drama following a group of inspirational women in a rural Cheshire community with the shadow of World War II casting a dark cloud over their lives. The isolated village couldn’t feel further away from the impending bloodshed and battlefields and yet it is not immune from the effects of war. As the conflict takes hold, and separates the women from their husbands, fathers, sons and brothers, the characters find themselves under increasing and extraordinary pressures in a rapidly fragmenting world. By banding together as the Great Paxford Women’s Institute, they help maintain the nation’s fabric in its darkest hour, and discover inner resources that will change their lives forever. In the face of impending war with Germany, the Great Paxford WI faces a difficult decision. When president Joyce Cameron resigns and takes most of the membership with her, Frances Barden and her supporters must come together to resurrect the Institute, and recruit new members from unexpected places. Meanwhile, local doctor Will Campbell discovers the terrible reason why he can’t rejoin the army, and Miriam Brindsley will do anything to stop her son from enlisting. Claire Hillman is attracted to young postman Spencer Wilson, but she discovers that the path of true love never did run smooth.

One minute your life is normal, the next, in an instant, that normality is gone. In the first confusing, terrifying hours after her diagnosis, while her family are overwhelmed with grief, Lisa finds refuge in her laptop. being ‘a gift’, and partly as a way to tell friends and family what’s happening, Lisa starts a blog about what she’s going through. As it turns out, there’s a hell of a lot to talk about… The C Word is an adaptation of Lisa Lynch’s inspiring and candid book about her experience of cancer, based on her popular blog which was launched shortly after her diagnosis in 2008. Adapted by Nicole Taylor and starring Sheridan Smith, this film is a defiant, ballsy and surprisingly funny story of life, love and cancer.

How the Other Half Eat Channel 4, 19:30

Can something as simple as changing what and when a family eats turn a household upside down? In How the Other Half Eat, two brave families agree to swap their weekly shop, their recipes and their mealtime routines in a bid to discover whether the food we eat reveals who we really are. Neither family knows who the other family is, where they live, what they earn, or where they shop, but have agreed to trade the contents of their trollies in a bid to find out whether the food we put in our mouths says almost as much as the words that come out of it. The families at the centre of the social experiment are the Janes and the Ringshalls, both from Surrey. Vanessa and James Ringshall and their four daughters have busy lives, meaning they rarely get to eat together, with meals tending towards quick and easy food.

Inside The Factory: How Our Favourite Foods Are Made BBC2, 20.00

Gregg Wallace and Cherry Healey step inside the factories that feed a nation, in a new three-part series revealing the wonders of the mass production process behind Britain’s favourite foods. Each programme focuses on one crucial 24-hour period, following the staggering scale of the non-stop production lines and discovering the professional secrets behind our household staples. Telling the story of the people and technology that work around the clock, Gregg and Cherry learn about the surprising innovations that create the perfect product every time, and realise that they will never look at their daily grocery shop in the same way. In the first episode, they trace the non-stop process of large-scale bread making. Feeding a nation that munches their way through 12 million loaves every day means the bread never sits still, as the pair find out how one of Britain’s biggest factories bake up to a million items a day. From processing truckloads of wheat through giant vibrating sieves to rolling the dough into cigar-shaped parts, and even undergoing a metal detector, Gregg is amazed by the sheer scale, speed and complexity behind producing such a staple part of Britain’s daily diet. Meanwhile, historian Ruth Goodman steps back in time to find that bread was the most adulterated food in Victorian era, as homemakers taught themselves to be vigilant if they wanted to avoid hidden ingredients such as chalk, ash and even ground up bones. But with 24 million slices of bread thrown away every day in modern day Britain, Cherry asks why we are so wasteful as a nation - and picks up some tips on how we can learn to enjoy every last crumb.

Educating Joey Essex: General Election what you saying? ITV2, 21.00

He once famously claimed not to know who the Prime Minister is, so it’s safe to say Joey Essex knows little to nothing about politics. Until now. A brand new Educating Joey Essex will see everyone’s favourite Essex boy ditch Dagenham for Downing Street in a bid to boost his political know how but will he learn enough to vote in this year’s General Election? This one off 60 minute special will challenge Joey to get in touch with the hottest topics in politics, in an effort to understand the issues that affect people of his generation, and ultimately make his decision on whether or not he should vote and if so, who to vote for. Cameras will be on hand to capture every step of Joey’s induction into politics, as he tours the Houses of Parliament and interviews some of the most influential figures in Westminster.

Unforgettable Election Moments: 60 Years On ITV1, 22.40

On the eve of the general election, this documentary charts the A-Z of key, unforgettable election moments from 60 years of dramatic coverage on television. From the campaign trail to election night, this fast-moving, fun and strangely nostalgic look-back includes rare footage from ITV’s first election coverage in 1959. Along the way the programme shows Harold Wilson’s handling of hecklers in the run up to the 1966 general election, John Prescott’s famous fisticuffs with an egg-throwing protester, Michael Portillo’s shock defeat in 1997, and Jeremy Paxman’s grilling of a victorious George Galloway in 2005. Plus how giant chickens, party conference streakers and yogic flying wrote their way into the TV general election history books too.

NEW TO TENERIFE? IT’S that time of year again when we see a lot of new artistes in Tenerife, seeking work around the various venues presenting entertainment.

Most of these shows take place at night and are normally introduced on to the stage at 10pm or 11pm. These are the two main slots for cabaret, and most artistes try to fill both. It´s difficult when getting started to finetune a diary to be able to dash between venues to perform two shows a night. However, when an act first arrives and has a clean gig sheet, it´s easy to fill at least one of those times every night of the week. The difficulty comes when venues are just too far apart to get from one to another comfortably. For instance, it would just about be possible to do a show at 10pm in Callao Salvaje, then make it to a Los Cristianos venue and be parked up and on stage by 11pm - having just performed a 45-minute show at 10pm. Most venues know that parking is an issue,

and there is normally a bit of leeway from the 11pm venues to allow for this. A good act will always have that understanding from comperes and bar-owners. The main question I always get asked by new artistes is how to get it all started. I tell them there is only one way to get work, and that is to get around the venues and do a little bit on stage to show what you can do.

Every Saturday, I work in the Highland Paddy on Parque de la Paz covering resident compere Craig Hevern on his night off. A few weeks ago, as I left the venue and walked past Frankies bar along the Strip, I noticed a new poster on their billboard for an act I had not seen or heard of on the circuit. Filled with intrigue, I made a mental note to try to find out

THIS weekend sees the grand re-opening of The King of Clubs’ main arena. Tramps has three venues under its roof, with Coco Bongos and Notorious open all year round, and the huge main arena available throughout the summer.

With state-of-the-art technology controlling the sound and lighting, a plethora of DJs will be dropping the latest tunes and classic club hits until 6am. What makes this weekend in the main arena even more exciting is that Tramps will be showing the long-awaited fight between boxing’s finest: Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. The atmosphere will be epic! And I am certain there will be plenty of banter between the management team. General manager Ricardo Lewington is half-Filipino and is backing the Pac Man from the Philippines, while assistant manager Ed, born and raised in Las Vegas, will be rooting for Mayweather, who is also from the city of lights. Saturday will be the biggest night of the year so far at Tramps, so make sure you get in nice and early if you want a ringside experience at The King of Clubs.

a bit about this new act. Last Saturday, I had just presented vocal duo, Uproar, to a packed Highland Paddy when a young lady introduced herself to me. It was the act I had seen on the Frankies bar poster the week before. Cara Lee, a new act on the Tenerife scene, performs a tribute to Amy Winehouse. She presented herself very

professionally with a well-designed business card and a modest, yet confident demeanour. Cara has been in Tenerife since May 2014 and, until now, has not promoted herself as a performing artiste. But I don´t know why. Cara agreed to do a 20-minute set at the venue where I am resident compere the very next night. It was a perfect night as Ye Olde Ocean is very busy on a Sunday for the Mister Sister show. Especially last Sunday, as Mister Sister had appeared on TV’s Britain’s Got Talent show the night before, so Cara was guaranteed a big audience. When I met her the first time, she was simply Cara ,with no hint of Amy. However, when she arrived at the venue, the Wow factor was immediately apparent from the audience. Her publicity poster shows her looking the part, and when you see her all dressed up and ready for the stage, it is a sight to behold. She is exactly the same build as Amy and the hair and make-up are bang-on. All that was left to find out was if the vocals matched the look.

Cara opened with Valerie and continued to impress as she sang Winehouse classics like; Tears Dry On Their Own, Love Is A Losing Game and Rehab, along with most of the songs from the album Back To Black. She has obviously studied Amy and has trained her voice to pick up on all of her vocal signatures. It doesn´t end there, though! What makes it even more special is the way Cara moves. It really was like watching Amy herself. She emulates those subtle dance moves that made Amy Winehouse so unique, and couples that with the ability to talk to the audience in between songs in a way that keeps them engaged. This girl will have no trouble getting work here, and, once word gets around, she will find that same difficulty in fine-tuning her diary to accommodate the two main-time slots each night to dart between venues with moments to spare between shows. At the moment, Cara has lots of availability. It won´t be long before she is working in all the top venues in Tenerife!

Restaurant Otelo, Adeje and Fañabe

Taste our traditional fare STAND by for a genuine taste of traditional Canarian cuisine, courtesy of Restaurant Otelo, a family-run business since 1988.

It has been famous in Adeje for its garlic chicken, and, in the last few years, has also been popular on Fañabe beach-front, serving a wide range of other Canarian specialities. Recently, they introduced full Canarian-themed nights, on Mondays in Adeje, and Thursdays in Fañabe. These include servers in full Canarian costumes, with different styles to represent each of the Canary Islands and a Live Canarian

c h o o s e

Folklore band singing all the traditional anthems and getting the crowd on their feet for a bit of a dance. We sat on the outside terrace and sipped on fruity, home-made

sangria while watching the sunset over the ocean. And we had definitely worked up an appetite when our food arrived. To start, we ordered Potaje Canario, which is

a traditional, thick soup made with potatoes, watercress, carrot and other hearty vegetables. Each place may make it slightly different, but it’s always delicious. We ate this with warm bread and Alioli, a garlic mayonnaise I’m sure most of you will be familiar with. For the main course, we plumped for the traditional spicy, garlic chicken - on-the-bone chicken pieces coated with their special, spicy, crispy coating. These are usually ordered with Canarian potatoes new potatoes cooked in their skin and coated in sea salt, and a salad. And even though Otelo are known for their chicken and rabbit, the salads are amazing. You can

from Tuna, Chicken, Avocado or the Otelo house salad, which basically comes with everything, plus fresh prawns. Fancy taking a guess which one we went for? The Otelo special of course! The potatoes and chicken come with a pot of Red Mojo, a spicy dip made with red peppers, chilli and olive oil. And I’m sure there’s a bit of extra garlic thrown in for good measure. They also serve simple grilled chicken breasts and traditional roast chicken for kids, or those who are more mild-mouthed - we can’t all be garlic lovers! We also ordered a Tortilla Española (Spanish omelette made with potatoes) for a bit of extra variation.

After dinner, we sat and chatted with owner Juan, who told us all about the generations of families he has seen grown up because they have returned to his family’s restaurant year after year. Before long, however, he was off saying “hello” to his other long-term customers and making sure they were having a great time by getting the ladies up to dance! Whether you’re a resident or just visiting our lovely Island, you just have to witness and taste some our traditional culture by getting yourself down to Otelo. And with two to chose from, there is simply no excuse! Open: Otelo I: 12noon - 11pm Otelo II: 11am 11pm. Call: 922 780 374 / 922 716 342

SALON CHIC 24/7

Under canvas, and fabulous

By Vanessa Vee THIS week we went camping, or “wamping” as my five-year-old calls it, and I recruited my mate Jo, and her seven-yearold son, Raico, to join us.

It was a question of where to go because my son is just 20 months old, and safety is an important factor because, for those who haven’t been following my column, I’m actually a big scaredy cat. And camping is another thing that freaks me out, as I have visions of the “mad axe murderer” coming to get me in the middle of the night. We decided on a lovely, highly-recommended place in Guia de Isora called Camping Castillo de Himeche, which is quite laughable really as my friend lives, literally, five minutes away, But that’s not the point - it’s the fun and thrill of sleeping outside and not the location. Two days’ preparation of cool boxes, shopping, meal-planning and loading up the cars to take everything apart from the kitchen sink ... and D Day arrived. After meeting up on

the main road, we needed to navigate our way and, admittedly, it’s not the easiest place to find. Arrivals have to be in before 2pm because the next check-in can’t be made for three hours. Friendly Dutch owners greeted us, and, after directing us to the tent area, it was operation “put up ya tent”. In fairness, ours is one of those three-second, pop-up jobs, but alas, not the same for Jo! We unloaded everything and set up camp for our stay, carefully planning where to pitch, and where to have the barbeque. There were two other tents pitched, and the Scottish couple next door were very helpful, advising us of where everything was. A separate car park is provided, as well as picnic benches, small barbeques and electrical points. The small camping area is surrounded by permanent, static caravans, but not quite like the ones we are used to seeing in the holiday parks back home. More like huge touring caravans, welded to wooden chalets. Obviously, allyear-round for some, and I’m guessing that lots of Swallows reside there as well in the appropriate months. The site provides some breath-taking views, and once there was a place for everything, and everything in

its place, we went for a wander around the area with the kids in tow. The setting is glorious, with beautiful views, coupled with well-kept grounds and immaculate gardens, together with fantastic facilities, including a lovely outdoor pool, kitchen with hob and fridges and even washing machines, clean toilets and shower block, all just a minute from our tents. We amused the kids with the usual games of football, rotaswing and monsters, while grazing on the mountain of food and drink we had brought for the night. Honestly, we really did bring the lot, yet they also had everything in the kitchen for our use, from plates, choppingboards, pans and condiments. We had great times, sitting around chatting and catching up with recent events. Then the inevitable happened. Those in the tent next door became a voice of everything we were discussing! You know what I mean, like, “OOh, I wonder how much those chalets sell for?” and “Do we have to pay extra for the use of the fridge?” This was exactly what we were discussing, but then an answer would be shouted out from the next-door tent. It was all harmless, but I’m not sure I’m keen on knowing that this guy was listening in to every word of our conversation. However, it wasn’t going to spoil our night. We calmed the children from the excitement of it all and eventually settled them down. As the temperature dropped, we built a small bonfire within our barbeque, toasted marshmallows and ate and drank the night away in great company. The next morning, after sorting our breakfast, it was time to return home. Our bill for the four of us, with one tent, use of a fridge and a car, was a grand total of 18.50 euros for the night. It’s something different - fun for all ages, but most of all, safe. If you would like to book your site, please call 922 693 063 or 686 258 954.

“I CAN’T do my hair” ... “I’m no good at maintaining it” … “It always looks a mess!” If I’ve heard these excuses once, I’ve heard them a thousand times.

Yet if you genuinely cannot style your hair, there’s always an option: a low-maintenance cut that not only looks fabulous but is still going to look amazing if you shake a dryer on it. So what’s different from the rest about these types of cuts? They are called “precision cuts”, which means that they are cut to follow the hair’s natural movement and growth pattern. Not one part of this cut is forced into shape. You simply cut the hair as it falls, which is normally done on dry hair. This is because if the hair is cut wet, you can force it into the position you want as you are cutting. It’s not going to stay there when it dries, as it has been cut against the natural growth. So, for example, my two images show haircuts which, even if they are blown to pieces here on the sea-front, will fall back into shape automatically. As long as they are cut correctly and they follow the hairline, there is no way this type of cut can look anything but

stunning. If you want volume and bounce, forget these cuts. If you want striking and a neverending flow of compliments, then these are for you. The husband of one of my clients said, as I showed his wife what I proposed to do: “It’s not going to look like that when you do it.” Quite the contrary! It will look like that, even when you are at home, long after your salon visit, and right up to your next one. If you have the type of hair which suits this cutting method, then your worries are over.

It’s quite addictive to have hair that looks good constantly. How can I say that your hair will always look good? Well, it’s no special secret. Nearly all stylists are taught to cut like this, but it’s up to them if this is the method they wish to use on their clients. If you’re the type who loves to style her own hair, then it’s simply a matter of using flat brushes. With no fancy curling or messing around, it is quite simply the easiest way to always look your best. Many of my clients, who love this form of cutting, get compliments about their hair, even on the day they are returning to the salon, some six to seven weeks later. So, if this sounds like your dream come true, ask your stylist for a precision cut. You, too, will see that you’ll always look as though you have just stepped out of the salon.

By Monica Dyson I WAS absolutely incensed to read that the House of Commons’ cutlery may be made in Vietnam in future, although they have had to think twice about it. But I’m not the slightest bit surprised.

A recent holiday in Mexico, where we were the only Brits among nearly 2,000 hotel guests, mostly from America and Canada, gave us a certain curiosity appeal. Everyone wanted to speak to us and ask questions about the UK. When we told one man where we were from he said, ‘Oh yes, I’ve heard of that place. Didn’t you use to make steel and cutlery?’ During the Fifties, my father was passionately proud of Sheffield cutlery and its standing in the world. In fact, if we ever ate in a restaurant or café - not very often, I must admit, in those days - the first thing he would do was look at the mark on the back of the knives and forks. And if they were not made in Sheffield, he would make us all walk out! In years to come, my father-in-law would make a similar protest against foreign manufacturing. In his case, it was to do with the War, and he would never entertain the thought of

1st May - 7th May 2015

Made in Britain? Not very likely buying a car or television or anything that had been manufactured in Germany or Japan. He would be turning in his grave to see the popular Superdry men’s clothing range, which actually advertises its Far Eastern origin on the front of its T-shirts and sweatshirts! If you look through your wardrobe, you will find it difficult to find anything made in the UK. It’s no secret that cheap imports have swamped the High Street over the last 20 years or so. But the extent to which it has grown is quite frightening. Since 2000, over 52% of jobs in what is left of the British textile industry have been lost, and last year alone we imported £12.5bn more clothing than we exported. Official figures show that around 90% of what we are wearing at any time has come from abroad, And what is so frightening is that it has happened almost without us realising it. Successive governments have presided over the demise of an industry which was once, just like the cutlery and steel-making industries, the envy of the world, and has been relocated to countries where workers put in over 80 hours a week to earn a pittance. There is no doubt that making garments

Catholics’ Sunday shuffle

SUNDAY services at San Blas Catholic Church on Golf del Sur have been rearranged throughout May, with most taking place at 6pm on Saturdays from tomorrow. The one exception is Sunday 24th May, when Holy Mass will be celebrated at 6pm instead of the usual 10am.

is highly important to the people of developing countries, and provides jobs for millions. But it is also a fact that these people are often totally exploited as far as wages and working conditions, as we saw at the time of the horrendous Bangladesh clothing factory disaster a couple of

years ago, where many of our High Street fashions were made. Doing my ironing this morning I looked at the labels on the garments: knickers from Marks and Spencer and the unfortunately-named British Home Stores, via Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. A man’s shirt from John Rocha at

Debenhams via Bangladesh. Trousers from Marks and Spencer via Egypt, cotton bed linen from Portugal (whatever happened to the cotton mills of Bradford?) and umpteen garments made in China. As long ago as the early Nineties, cheap Chinese imports were threatening our existing manufacturers, who simply could not compete with the huge investment by the Chinese in factories, machinery and training. And by 2005, what had been a steady flow turned into a tsunami when tariffs which had been placed on Chinese imports were removed. Just see how many of the clothes you are wearing have been manufactured in Turkey, Vietnam, Mauritius, Cambodia and Pakistan, to name just a few countries. Whenever I come over to Tenerife, I invariably buy something with a Desigual label as I love the colourful range of clothes. But recently I have noticed that the clothes are no longer made in Spain but in China or India. Not good for the Spanish manufacturing industry! It isn’t as if you feel you are getting superior quality any more, or that retailers seem to care either way as long as they are getting

their vast profits. Last week I took two swimsuits back to Marks here in Sheffield, because, after wearing them on holiday, the colour had faded. In fact, part of them were a different colour altogether. They were six weeks old. The lady on the Customer Service desk explained that it was the sun that had done it! “So, I would be okay to wear them on holiday in say, Alaska?”, I said, suggesting that perhaps the material should have been used to withstand the effects of sun, or at best, a disclaimer on the label stating that there was a risk of colour change if worn in the sun so that you could make up your own mind about the purchase. To be fair to M & S, they have refunded the money I paid for the garments as “they are sorry I haven’t been satisfied with my purchases, which appear to have been affected by the sun”. They were, of course, made in China, but then, when I looked for replacements in other stores, they were as well! But are we are likely to want to pay more for our clothes to buy British-made? I’m not at all sure, and it’s such a shame, isn’t it?

Scouts gearing up for summer camp THE 1st Tenerife Scouts group, featuring Cubs, Scouts and Beavers, are well on their way to a summer camp following a successful fund-raiser at Dylan’s bar, Los Cristianos.

The funds will be put towards camp-

ing equipment and other gear in preparation for some exciting children’s activities during the school holidays. Under the leadership of Steve Hardy and Leisel Thomas, both fully qualified, the group are running another fundraiser on 15th May at the Merry Monk bar in Los Cristianos. Top entertainer Billy Porter is planning a special one-off show for

this adults-only night, and tickets are five euros. The Scouts, formed less than a year ago, meet every Tuesday from 6-7.30pm in the church hall at Silencio’s Coral Mar Square, and boys and girls are welcome. Beavers range from 6-8yrs, Cubs 8-10½ and Scouts 10-14. Steve says: “We are fully registered and governed by the BSO

(British Scouts overseas). Our aim is to teach life skills they probably would not get a chance to experience otherwise. “We have four leaders, who give their time free and are all trained and police checked.” For more details of the 1st Tenerife Scout Group, parents should contact Steve on 922 729 733, or email 1st. tenerifescoutgroup@ gmail.com.

kennel Pets in the frame New land wanted OUR latest fundraising event at the refuge takes place next Saturday (9th May) at 2pm.

We have been asking our friends and supporters to take a picture of their favourite pet (with flowers) and email them to teneriffa@aktiontier. org. They will be printed and displayed at the refuge, ready for the judges to decide on the three top pictures, which will each win a prize. It promises to be a fun-filled day, with a dog obedience competition in which you can show off your dog’s talents. Mr and Mrs Dog 2015 will also be chosen, and there will be lots of fun and games for the children, a petting farm with many different animals, horse-riding, bouncy castle, cakes, hot food, music. And there will be a

chance to tour the sanctuary’s amazing facilities and to meet many of the dogs. If you would like to pre-enter your pet for the dog show, please call 922 778 630 . Entry is three euros per dog. Our thanks to Mary Irving, who has again been busy making her gorgeous, knitted dolls so we can sell them at

the Spring event. Papering the refuge We have had a large influx of dogs this week in all shapes, sizes and colours … but fortunately, they are all made of paper by some of the many children who visit the refuge as part of our educational programme. With more and more youngsters visiting the refuge, the conditions

on the Island will, hopefully, improve for our beloved animals in the future. Donations welcome Please note that Accion del Sol does not charge for adoptions, and every animal is fully passported , microchipped, inoculated, sterilised and has a full bill of health before leaving the refuge.

Live Arico news

Smashing Smokehouse night OUR fund-raiser at Howards Smokehouse, Golf del Sur, this week was a great success, raising 435 euros to be split between our animals and those at San Miguel’s Sangha Sanctuary.

That’s where Mark does a great job of caring for pigs, goats, sheep, rabbits, chickens, ducks, iguanas and more. Thanks to Howard and all the hard-working staff for looking after us again, and to everyone who enjoyed the evening. Entertainment was hosted by Suzy q and Colin Stevens, and featured Barry Santana and Slam (Suzy with Robbie Dominic). Thanks again to Jack Hardman for his scrummy cakes, which we auctioned for 40 euros. We will do it again soon.

Dog of the week Maxwell the Doberman came to us about a month ago from the illegal puppy farm in the North. He couldn’t stand up for much more than a minute without his legs giving up on him. His desire was there; he wanted to come out and play, but his legs just wouldn’t have it. We believe this was mainly because he was kept in very small con-

fines, and with a severe lack of exercise. That has now changed and he is a very happy chappy. The medication for this massive improvement has been easy to administer: sun, space, exercise and TLC! Now he needs a loving family. Could this be you? If so, call Sue on 629 388 102 for more information. Back on The MustCat We are again chartering the MustCat to see

the whales and dolphins. Our last trip out was completely full, and this one has already half sold out. The price is just 20 euros for the three-hour trip, sailing at 1.15pm on Saturday, 13th June. Call Sue for your tickets. Live Arico shops All is going well at our new charity shop on the Golf, and remember that our vet, Cesar Bertoldi, is with us every Wednesday morning from 10am-noon, offering advice on all aspects of your pet’s healthcare. Come and have a chat with him. We are situated at Golf Park, which is on the loop road round, before the lottery kiosk. We are open 10am-4pm Monday to Saturday. We still have shops in Los Cristianos, Calle Revron near Churchills Bar, and San Eugenio opposite Hotel La Nina by Amandas bar at las Carabelas complex. Both shops open from 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday, and until 3pm Saturdays and Sundays.

WE are regularly asking San Miguel Council to help us find some suitable land that we could buy or rent within a four-mile radius of our existing kennels. That’s because they have become harder to maintain, so if anyone knows of somewhere suitable for animal use, we would love to hear from you. Fund-raising ideas As K9 relies on the local community, not only for walking our animals but in raising muchneeded funds to keep them, there are several ways in which you can help us to help them. Recently, we reprinted a 2nd edition of Boris & Friends, written by Susan Dehmel. The book makes an ideal gift for children and is available in English/Spanish, or German/Spanish. It not only helps with language skills but is also a colouring book, so the drawings in the book can be copied. Susan has kindly donated the copyrights to K9, and you can get purchase a book from the following outlets. *Red Hound Book Shop and Barbara Book Shop in Los Cristianos *Dingo Pet Shop - La Clave Book Shop - Papeleria (High Street) La Paz Vet and Pretty Pooches Dog Grooming Parlour in Adeje *Koala Sur Pet Supplies and, of course, K9 Kennels in Las Chafiras Shop donations Our Alcala Plaza shop is in continual need of donations, such as furniture, electrical items, clothing, bedding, shoes, books ... in fact, anything saleable. If you have anything suitable, please take directly to the shop. For larger items, we may be able to collect, so please contact the shop on 611 352 801 or Muriel on 646 561 035; small items may be dropped off at the kennels during the morning. The shop always needs helpers and we are open Monday-Saturday, from 10am-2pm. If you have a few hours to spare, even if it is just to cover the holiday period, please contact the numbers shown.

Car Boot sale Our Car Boot sale at Los Gigantes Bus Station sells clothing, brica-brac, and books. It runs on the last Sunday of EVERY month, between 9am-12.30pm. Just one euro! Can you spare one euro a month? it’s not a lot, but with lots of people donating, it can make a huge difference to the animals. There is no hassle, no long-term commitment; you can stop at any time. So please, join our Teaming Group by entering your bank details or your credit/debit card on to our safe website system at https:// www.teaming.net/refugio k9tenerife?lang=en_ UK If you prefer, you can donate through our PayPal account, which can be found on the K9 Tenerife website. Old girl needs home We desperately need someone can give Patricia a new home. She has been a member of a loving family for eight years. Unfortunately, like many on the Island, the bank claimed the house they were renting and they have been looking for over six month for a place they can rent which will take them all, including Patricia. Regrettably, there are many landlords against dogs. Out of desperation, Patricia has been put into the care of K9. She is an elderly lady, used to the comforts of a family home, and will be heartbroken at having to move into kennels and shared accommodation. So if you or anyone you know can take a middle-aged dog with excellent manners and a good temperament, get in touch with K9. Our free landline We now have a landline: 822 106 195, so calls are free. The kennel mobile is still 667 638 468. As the above is a common situation if you know anyone who rents property that accepts pets contact us so we can put together a list we can pass to those who really don´t want to give up their pets.

FASHION

Get ready for the Summer rentals!

EMERGENCY

By carl Pattison THERE should be one on every street corner, handing out fines and clamping down on crimes against fashion. That’s right, it’s time we called in THE FASHION POLICE! It’s those little or large mistakes you ladies sometimes make which scream out for someone to run up behind you and drag you off to be taught a lesson. I know we all have our off-days, but sometimes those little items creep back out of your wardrobe when, really, they should stay there. Let’s start with Tenerife’s almost plague-like terror of “leggings”, those lycra numbers that hold no secrets to every lump and bump on a woman’s body. Even those with perfect figures shouldn’t! It’s like telling the world: “I can’t be bothered.” They flatter no one and look dreadful on everyone. Especially with vests or short T-shirts. Please, let’s move downwards to shoes. You girls all like a heel, but drag-Queen versions went out years ago, so tame it down a notch. As did the MAXI. True, these do cover you up, but they make you look twice the size. Instead, opt for a shorter knee length, still floaty but more elegant. I know some of you ladies with, er, bigger assets than most, like to have them on show. But please be aware of small children and older men - not a good look in any situation. Clashing patterns rarely work (men are the worst at this). It’s like you got ready in a rush and put it all on, so try to stick to one patterned piece and leave the rest plain. If you’re unsure about a look, or an item you are wearing, seek the opinion of someone you trust. Certainly not the shop assistant because most will sell you whatever, just to get you spending. If it feels like it’s too much, then it probably is, so don’t overdress. They say get ready,

By Sue McDonald

then remove one item even those earrings. Less is more when you’re shopping for clothes and putting them on. Size, too, is a factor. Don’t wear clothing too tight as this can look bad, even if you are nice and slim. If it fits you well, it’s more likely to look good. But never squeeze yourself into anything. Try to stick to a maximum of three colours when choosing an outfit. Any more and it rarely looks good, giving you a cluttered appearance. Finally, if you have the body to wear skimpy swimwear, go ahead and strut your stuff. But if not, please don’t wear the swimwear you bought 15 years ago which no longer fits. Choose something more modest that flatters you. Wraps, for instance, look great as you’re coming off the beach. It’s all about what you feel good in, and we all want to feel good, don’t we?

IF you own or manage a property in Tenerife which is rented out to tourists, now is the time to start thinking about your Summer rental programme. There are lots of things you can do to protect your investment, and also ensure that your tenants have a great time and want to return. After all, the best rental programme is with clients who have visited before and want to come back time and time again. These people are more likely to take good care of your property, and respect your belongings. Firstly, a few obvious tips. Don’t furnish with items likely to be easily ruined. For example, don’t put a white sofa in a three-bedroom proper-

ty likely to attract families with young children. Don’t decorate your property with items which have sentimental value to you, in case they get broken or stolen. Holiday-makers are unlikely to treat Granny´s vase, or that delicate flower display, with the same reverence you do. There are plenty of cheap and cheerful decorative items that will add colour, or tie a whole colour scheme together, and which are replaceable if the worse does happen. Don’t make your property too personal if you are renting it out. Holiday-makers want to see beach scenes, or bright breezy abstracts on the walls - not pictures of someone else´s family. Take sensible measures to protect your property and your belongings. For example, put a throw over the sofa. Here in Tenerife, of course, there

is the added problem of sun cream on your soft furnishings. And your cleaner or property management company will find it much easier and quicker to wash a loose throw, rather than the cushion covers themselves. If you have a leather or faux-leather sofa, leave instructions on how to clean with a mild soap or wet wipe, because harsher cleaning products may damage the material. Use bedspreads that can be washed and dried quickly and don’t need ironing. Again, the person responsible for cleaning and the quick turn-around of your property will thank you for it. Also, use mattress and pillow covers to make it easier to keep the place presentable and clean. Ensure that your inventory is adequate. Unhappy tenants will bother their local contact, and,

at the very worst, will feel disgruntled and treat the premises badly. And make sure there is adequate seating and bedding for the number of people to whom you are renting, as well as kitchen items such as plates, crockery, etc. You do not need to overstock the kitchen itself as holiday-makers are unlikely to prepare gourmet meals. But there should be a minimum inventory to enable them to prepare snacks and simple meals. Reasonable wear-andtear is one thing, but if your curtains look grubby or faded, the sunbeds broken, the beds lumpy and the sofa uncomfortable, you are unlikely to have happy campers! Perhaps the best thing to do is cast a fresh eye over your property, and consider whether you would be happy arriving there for your holidays.

Motoring

By Emma at Motorworld

WE hear all kinds of stories about the legal requirements of what equipment must be carried in your car in Tenerife and mainland Spain.

It’s all to do with current legislation, and it will pay you to concur to avoid fines and hassle with police if you are stopped. From 30th March, the DGT issued the following information on its website, which covers the obligatory items to be carried, and what is recommended by authorities to carry to make your driving experience safe. And to assist you in case of an accident or breakdown. Reflective jackets You must carry them at all times, with access

1st May - 7th May 2015

Your car’s obligatory equipment

available without getting out of your car. That ensures the jacket is on before you get out of the vehicle at the roadside. That means it must be stored inside your glove box, under your seat or in a place that you, the driver, can easily reach without too much movement. You must also have sufficient jackets for the number of seats/ passengers you are carrying. For example, if your car is a two-seater, you need two only. But if your car has five, seven or nine seats, those are, legally, the number of jackets that should be carried because all your passengers may also have to exit the vehicle, dependant on the circumstances.

Reflective triangles You are required to carry two of these. Many modern vehicles have at least one in the boot lid, but older cars do not, so these are normally carried in your boot. One should be placed 50 metres in front of your car and one at the rear, also the same distance away, to warn oncoming

traffic of a potential hazard ahead. Triangles normally come in their own boxes and do not take up much boot space. Spare wheel or puncture outfit A lot of new cars are sold without a spare wheel as standard, so you should always check that you have one - and

also that you have the tools to change a wheel. If you do not carry a spare tyre, it is obligatory to have a puncture repair kit, along with the tools required to use it, and the know-how to do it. Chains In parts of the mainland, wheel chains are obligatory. But this does not, of course, apply here, although they would be useful up Mount Teide when there is heavy snowfall! RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT Jump leads These are recommended in case you have a flat battery and another motorist is able to stop and use his/her car to help you jumpstart the car to get you to the nearest garage or petrol station, where

you can purchase a new battery. However, be aware that some cars cannot be jump-started because of the electronics on board the car. Torch Should you breakdown at night, this can be very useful in either completing an accident claim form, or seeing under your bonnet to ascertain your problem. Or, indeed, to assist in connecting jump-leads to the correct terminals. Mobile phone Even if you do not use one regularly, carrying a fully-charged one, even if normally switched off, is useful as it can be used to call a grua, the police or someone to assist you. Window cleaner This is useful to clear smears or flies off your windscreen to ensure that your vision is not obstructed in any way. Food and drink Some water and food - biscuits, etc, or nonperishable foods - are always good to have on board to eat if you feel tired. And water to hydrate you after an accident, or shock you may have experienced. For more information, call Motorworld on 922 783 828.

Let v be the speed of the escalator, in steps per second. Let L be the number of steps that you need to take when the escalator stands still. Upwards (along with the escalator), you walk 1 step per second. You need 50 steps, so that takes 50 seconds. This gives the following equation: L steps - 50 seconds × v steps/second = 50 steps. Downwards (against the direction of the escalator), you walk 5 steps per second. You need 125 steps, so that takes 25 seconds. This gives the following equation: L steps + 25 seconds × v steps/second = 125 steps. From the two equations follows: L = 100, v = 1. When the escalator stands still, you need 100 steps.

By Roscoe TENERIFE manager Raul Agne was this week told his contract would be renewed for another season. The decision must have been made before the horror show in the Mediterranean.

This was as poor as Tenerife have been under Agne and, in many ways, it was a return to the dark days of Autumn. Tenerife were bright in the first half with Abdon Prats, in particularly, showing up well. He is on loan from Mallorca but in Spain, unlike England, players are allowed to play against their parent clubs. And boy did he try. Once or twice he got the better of his own club and set up good chances. The hosts were in the match, with the lively Michael Pereira shining brightly. He is a La Liga player and there is little doubt that he will be back in the top flight next season. The Frenchman is a tricky customer and even though his end product can be a bit erratic, he is a decent player. The 28-year-old would love English football. Despite Pereira keeping Dani Gonzalez busy in the Tenerife net, the visitors took the lead after a goalkeeping howler from Jesus Cabrero. Suso had worked a good opening down the right, but he scuffed his 20-yard shot. Yet somehow, Cabrero let the ball squirm out of his grasp and Maxi smashed in a gift. The Uruguayan will never score an easier goal. Maxi’s fifth goal of the season gave Tenerife a half-time lead, which vanished just a few minutes after the turnaround. I don’t know what was put in the half-time tea, but Tenerife came out looking as though they had just run the Lon-

don Marathon. They were leggy, shapeless and in the end, the only surprise was that Mallorca didn’t score a few more. It was a desperately poor effort, and a worrying development. Agne is all about high-pressure, expansive football. This was more leadenfooted, headless-chicken soccer. Former Newcastle and Cordoba striker Xisco bagged the equaliser after a smart move with substitute Javi Ros. He is the younger brother of former Tenerife favourite Inigo Ros. Javi is finding his feet at Mallorca after a couple of seasons in a tier below, and his lovely wall pass to Xisco was exquisite. Xisco’s smart, first-time finish gave Dani no chance and served notice of what was to come. He is a funny fish, Xisco. History shows that the move to Newcastle came far too early in his career, but there is no doubt the talent is there. He has produced at Racing and Cordoba before pitching up at Mallorca. He is a line leader who just needs to find a club to love. Ten minutes later Mallorca were ahead, and it was another fine goal. Asensio picked out Pereira, who skinned Carlos Ruiz and pulled the ball back for Joselu to fire home.

So it’s now five matches without a win and, with just seven games to go, Tenerife are just three points above the drop-zone after results went against them. I’m certain they are not a relegation team, but with two of the top sides, Real Betis and Sporting Gijon, to come, Tenerife need to get safe as soon as possible. This weekend, the strangest side in the league are in town. Lugo are a great little club, who have made real strides over the last few seasons. They play good football, like to attack and have a great attitude. After Tenerife, I think I’ve seen them play more than any other side in this league. The joys of terrestrial Spanish TV! They are mustard at home, but away? Pick your cliché. They travel like Guinness, Paolo di Canio or Mr T in a chopper. They have won only twice away all season, and have been smashed on their last three road matches. Before Christmas they scored six at Numancia but could still only draw! Bonkers. Lugo have one of the oldest squads in the league, but they do have a fine prospect in 21-year-old striker Luis Fernandez. And then there is their player of

the season, a certain Iriome. He was the Ayoze of the last decade. He burst on the scene in the 2007/8 season and had the scouts salivating. Those who were there will never forget his brace against Las Palmas, and he looked set for the big time. But the 6ft teenager had problems growing into his frame. Hamstring and calf problems saw him lose a yard of pace and confidence. But at 27 he is a different player. And a man. Position

He has found a home at Lugo, where he has been a revelation. He said: “I’ve really enjoyed it at Lugo. “They wanted me, and I feel part of the project. I’m signed through until the end of the next season and I’m very happy to be here. I feel that the team play the way I want to play.” He scored the only goal when the sides met before Christmas and he says it didn’t feel weird. “I am Tenerife born and raised, but I play for Lugo.

“I am looking forward to coming back this weekend to see my family and some friends, and I love playing at the Helidoro. Will I return and play for Tenerife again? I would think so. I’m sure one day that will happen, and you have to remember that I offered to stay when we went down to the Segunda B.” Like Suso, Cristo Martin and Vitolo, I’m certain he will be back with us soon enough - and he will get a warm reception on Sunday!

Filthy-rich Hamilton set to crank up the pressure LEWIS Hamilton, reigning Formula One champion with three out of four victories already this season, has some bad news for his rivals, including Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg.

Not content with being heralded as Britain’s richest sportsman, worth £88m, the twotime world champ has already won three of the four F1 races so far this season, with a £27m contract on offer from Mercedes being considered. And with the Spanish Grand Prix in his sights in Barcelona on Sunday, Hamilton, who won the race last year with his fourth consecutive success, warns his rivals: “I have never felt so confident, so powerful. I’ve got a great machine and my fans are giving me such a lift.” But jealousy always rears its ugly head when one team dominates, as Red Bull did, via Sebastian Vettel, for four solid years. So it is not altogether surprising that Red Bull boss Christian Horner, who never said a peep about one-sided odds when his team were mopping up everything - Vettel winning nine Grands Prix

in a row in 2013 - complained bitterly: “Mercedes are ruining the show.” That was after Hamilton had swept to victory in the 2015 curtain-raising Australian GP, leaving Vettel’s Ferrari more than 30 seconds adrift, Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull a lap down and Jenson Button’s McLaren-Honda a further lap in arrears. True, Vettel beat Hamilton in the second race, in Malaysia - his only defeat so far this season - but that could have been down to an illjudged pit stop by the world champion. Horner and many others seem to forget that Mercedes persuaded Hamilton to leave McClaren, telling him: “You

won’t do much next season because we haven’t got our engine right. But in your second season with us, you’ll be flying.” And so it came to pass, Hamilton forcing teammate Nico Rosberg into second spot on the Championship with some wonderful, controlled racing last year. Every time somebody dominates, everyone else whinges. Horner forgets it was the same when Vettel trounced everyone for four years in a row - winning nine races on the bounce in 2013. In those days, you never heard him suggest that, perhaps, Red Bull should be slowed down somehow to give the others a chance.

Hamilton, having won in Australia, China and Bahrain and finishing second to Vettel in Malaysia, is already 27 points ahead of Rosberg and 28 clear of Vettel. But whatever controversy is raging behind the scenes, Hamilton remains serene and fully focused. “It doesn’t matter who you’re against, you try to beat everybody out there,” he says. He is aware that the F1 title race looks far from being the twohorse contest between Mercedes team-mates that it was last season,” adding: “It’s great to be having a fight with the Ferraris.” And despite mutterings that “something” should be done to make

Formula One a more level playing field, Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff doesn’t believe the current F1 racing formula has “failed”, even though tweaks are being introduced, earlier than planned, to improve the show. The current generation of V6 hybrid power units have been praised for their technology. But F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone, unhappy with the current format, has pushed for a return to V8 engines generating a more “marketable”, noisier, 1000bhp. Though Ecclestone is expected to compromise by allowing the current V6 units to stay - revised to allow four figures of bhp - the moves to revert to

former regulations has raised questions over whether the “new era” of F1 has, subsequently, been a success. But Wolff, who has overseen Mercedes’ dominance since last year, rejects this assertion, while admitting the vested interests of his team and the F1 promoters are always likely to create differing views. “I don’t think it’s a failure,” he said. “Like any other sport, we clearly have our challenges, and you need to be able to reinvent yourself if you believe the formula or format is not good enough. “With Ferrari resurging, I think there is a pretty tough fight out there for the Championship, and we have seen indications in the last races that viewing figures have been up.” But even Silverstone chiefs are pleading with Ecclestone to improve the spectacle of Formula One or risk losing its soul, even though the Northamptonshire circuit is expecting record-breaking figures this year. That matters not a jot to Hamilton, who says he is feeling stronger now than at any stage of his Formula One career. It is an ominous warning from the driver on top - the man who has won nine of the last 11 Grands Prix and has been on pole at the last four. We will see on Sunday!

Boom time for Nick’s Rabz THERE is a famous saying, “curse of the commentator”, in which something is said and then the opposite happens.

Last week in my Oasis Fm Fantasy League review, I said it was a three-horse race, and then, lo and behold, a fourth horse came up on the rails. With just four games to go, the title race is

well and truly on. There were extra games in the last week and the point-scoring team of the week reflects this as Hull, after two fine wins that have probably seen them safe, provided five of the players. Leicester contributed two and the rest came from Chelsea, Everton, Swansea and Southampton. As mentioned, the title race is wide open and we have a new leader - Nick Abbott’s Boomtown Rabz have

moved back into top spot on 1,856 points. Gordon Wilson’s Coffee Shop Karma had been hanging on for a few weeks and finally slipped back to be nine points behind on 1,847. Ray Malone’s Inter Malone are a point back with 1,846, and coming up on the rails are Frank Devaney’s Toffee’s, who have moved within touching distance of the title with 1,845 points. This is going to be close! Performance of the week came from Ian

Barr’s Barrstards, who came in with 82 points featuring a team packed with Chelsea and Liverpool players, who both played twice this week. His top scorers were John Terry, Simon Mignolet, Martin Skrtel, and Eden Hazard, with Leicester’s Jamie Vardy also in double figures. In the Oasis Fm minileague, Adi Benson still leads by 16 points from Chris Elkington, but he does owe Chris 10 euros after Aston Villa

beat Liverpool in the FA Cup. Roscoe looks like finishing third, because John Zammit sits

at the back, needing to make up a 68-point deficit to avoid the wooden spoon.

Gaffers are nearly there

GAFFERS A will be crowned the Direct Telecom Pool League champions … unless an act of God derails them! They took on reigning champions Tenerife Hammers A on Tuesday in what was billed as the title decider.

In reality, Hammers A had to win while a point would have been just fine for Gaffers. The defending champs started well as they looked to end Gaffers unbeaten run and quickly moved into a 3-1 lead. Gaffers fought back and after a tough eight frames, the score was nicely balanced at 4-4. Hammers regained the lead, but Ash levelled the score again after ending Paul’s 28-game unbeaten run. It was then Lee against Jambo and this turned into an epic, with neither player wanting to give anything away. In the end, though, Lee came good and gave Gaffers the lead for the first time. And once in front, Gaffers’ Neil took the last frame to take the three points and all but seal the title. They are two points in front with two games in hand and still unbeaten. They celebrated long into the night - and even Lee was tempted to join in the shot action! With the top two spots decided, The Phoenix took an opportunity to move into third spot, overtaking Inn the Pink A, who were not in action. Dreamers A hosted Phoenix and it is a difficult place get an away result, the scoreline certainly highlighting

this point. Through the early frames there was not much to choose between them, but with the promise of a high league finish, Phoenix managed to secured the winning frames and the points. Phoenix Potters followed their stablemates up the table after a hard-fought game against Waterfall Rebels, the Potters knowing victory would take them above their opponents. Again, early frames were traded with not much between the two, showing just how much the two sets of players know each other, but it was home advantage as the Potters edged it 7-5. It was all change at the bottom as Tenerife Hammers C played the Peacocks. These two teams occupied the bottom two places with the Hammers rock-bottom, and this was always going to be a tough fixture, one that neither team wanted lose. You could sense the nervousness and tension in the air as players tried not to make mistakes, but it was a fine battle, just edged by the Hammers. And what a welcome three points it was for them, the win taking them off the bottom as they swapped places with Peacocks. Terrace Bar A, also in deep relegation trouble, faced a tough fixture against Palms A down on Amarilla Golf. But the hosts fancied their chances as the Palms had players missing and moved into a 3-1 lead. They kept this going at 5-2, only for the visitors to roar back. Roscoe took back-toback frames, and when Darren won frame 10 it was all square. Sparky then kept his cool to defeat Kung-Fu Terry, which left Adi the

chance of winning the game against in-form Mark. It was a close, tight frame which went all the way to the black. Mark played a crucial safety shot which left Adi with a dilemma. He chose to go for a difficult pot instead of playing safe. Some said it was gutsy, while his team-mates declared it stupid! Either way it didn’t come off and Mark took the frame for the draw, meaning he had won all three on the night. But that could be the point which keeps Terrace up at the end of the season. In the final game, Palms B hosted Terrace Bar B in Torviscas. This one wasn’t to prove such a close match, with the Terrace seemingly not turning up again. The home team were totally in control and had no problem steering themselves to another win. They are now just two points behind Palms A, and bragging rights could be interesting next season! As for the Terrace

B, it’s a good job they showed good early-season form or they could be battling with their A team for relegation. In Division Two, Sporting Jester A looked to get over their recent wobble and take a step closer to the title and promotion. They had a difficult tie against Inn the Pink B and it didn’t look good when they found themselves 5-2 down. They were aware that they needed to win the final five frames to take the match, and they are not league leaders for nothing. Jesters showed a real touch of class by picking off frame after frame, holding their nerve and taking all five frames and a vital three points. But Bluebell A are still chasing, and they knew they had to be wary of the threat offered by The Crown after their great result against the Jesters last week. Unfortunately, the visitors could not replicate last week’s form and Bluebell moved through the gears, tak-

ing the match with ease. Waterfall Jokers could still finish runnersup because they are just five points behind Bluebell A with two games in hand. If they can win every match between now and the end of the season, then second spot is theirs. This week they had to overcome the challenge of Picasso’s A and, despite a few nervy frames, the result was never in doubt. The confident home team soon had another three points to add to their tally. Gaffers B and James Place occupy similar positions, with just a point separating them. In this reverse fixture, there was nothing between the two teams as they played out a draw, so what was to come? James Place made the early running, quickly moving into a 3-1 lead. And they kept their noses in front through the next session, keeping the score at 5-3. Gaffers B needed some inspiration, and they received it when

210 -156 14

they took the next two frames to level the score at 5-5; two frames to play and it was always going to end one way. They took a frame apiece and played out another draw. Treehouse B are currently in the wooden spoon position, but they gave themselves a glimmer of hope with a good point against Sporting Jester B. It was an evenly-fought match with both teams giving nothing away, and nothing could separate them come the end of the night. Treehouse are within three points of their rivals and, with results going for them, they may be able to climb off the bottom. Dreamers B, one of the teams they could catch, were in action against mid-table Hoppy’s Bar. The home team were in good form, though, and try as they might, Dreamers could just not get a foothold. Hoppy’s played well and soon took the games they need for the win.

Chelsea reach for the crown

CHELSEA should be crowned Barclay’s Premier League leaders champions on Sunday, and that would leave the battle for second, third and fourth spot raging. And sides at the bottom are starting to show some fight.

By Adi Benson

Leicester v Newcastle Leicester have put together a great run over the last five games, taking four wins and moving out of the relegation places. They did okay against Chelsea on Wednesday, despite boss Nigel Pearson losing the plot in the post-match press conference. But his men are going about the job with renewed confidence and will feel Newcastle are there for the taking. Newcastle have been hopeless recently, but they were better against Swansea. They still need a win from somewhere to be safe and may just give Leicester a better match than many think. They have a couple of players back for this. And their losing streak has to snap some time! Prediction: Home win

Liverpool v QPR Liverpool were poor in the draw against West Brom, and even worse in the defeat at Hull. And now they find themselves in a real battle just to finish in the top six. They are struggling to score goals and they look leaky at the back. Do they have the fight left in them this season? QPR are four points from safety and are running out of games, but they will relish this. They certainly need to get something, and if they can keep the hosts out early, the crowd will turn on the Reds. They have pace on the break and a dogs-of-war midfield. This could be interesting. Prediction: Home win

Aston Villa v Everton Despite recent good results, Villa are still on the brink of relegation and desperately need points to make their final couple of games a little more comfortable. They played well against Man City and were unlucky not to take a point. If they can show the same sort of passion and desire now, a win is not beyond them. Saying that though, Everton have come good at just the right time, and the 3-0 win at home against Man Utd will have done wonders for their confidence. They have clicked as an attacking force, and Villa must keep it tight in defence. Everton, who will be patient, they have shown what damage they can cause on the break. Prediction: Draw

Sunderland v Southampton

Sunderland are fighting for their lives after slipping into the bottom three, and their remaining home games could be key to their survival. They need the crowd right behind them, and they need to show real fighting qualities. But they don’t score many goals and the Saints defence is very good, so it will be a difficult task for them. Southampton, still fighting for a European place, will be chasing victory. They are tight at the back, allowing their attacking players freedom and confidence. And they know that if they can breach Sunderland’s defence early, they could go on to win comfortably, keeping the pressure on Spurs. Prediction: Away win

Swansea v Stoke Both sides can be proud of their performances this season. Swansea desperately want to finish in eighth, which would be their highest-ever Premier League finish, and they are a tough nut to crack at the Liberty Stadium. They were excellent at Newcastle and have quality all over the pitch. Stoke were disappointed not to beat Sunderland last week, but a win could see them move above Swansea, so the stakes are high. In Charlie Adam, they have one of the league’s most in-form players. Prediction: Home win

West Ham v Burnley After promising so much, West Ham seemed to have selected their reverse gear in 2015 and haven’t worked out how to change it. At one stage, European football was a possibility, but they will be lucky to finish in the top half of the table. Big Sam can bemoan a number of injuries and bad luck, but it looks as though his managerial shortcomings have again been exposed. Burnley have won over a lot of hearts this season with their honest football but, unfortunately, it hasn’t been winning them games or points. They now look doomed for the drop, with four games left and five points from safety. If they are to have a chance, than a win here is essential. Prediction: Away win

Chelsea v Crystal Palace Chelsea need one more win to be crowned Champions, and they must be confident of wrapping things up at home on Sunday. They have not been at their best in recent games. But when they need to turn it on they can, as they showed against Leicester on Wednesday. They have been the team to catch this season and fully deserve the title. Palace have gone through the motions in the last couple of matches, which has not pleased Alan Pardew. They need to find their intensity again. Prediction: Home win

Tottenham v Man City This is a big game for Spurs as they look to snatch fifth spot. Harry Kane was quiet last week, and I wonder if he is feeling the long campaign. But they will be confident of bossing the midfield, and City are not exactly watertight. You have to question City’s motivation because against Villa, they were again complacent at times. The title has gone, they will finish in the top four and, for a few players, it has been a hectic two years. Towels on the beach? Prediction: Away win

Hull v Arsenal Two wins on the bounce have put a spring back in the step of Hull, and they must feel confident. Their home support was fantastic against Liverpool, and the fans could play another part here. Their defence was solid, but they will have to up their levels again to keep their opponents at bay. It may well be decided by another set-piece move. Arsenal have their sights firmly set on finishing second, and there is no reason to think they will not make it. They huffed and puffed against Chelsea, and Hull have given them a real test over the last few meetings. This could be a goalfest. Prediction: Away win

Man Utd v West Brom United were not that bad at Everton last weekend, but still had their tummy tickled. Injured Wayne Rooney, who is finished for the season, he will be a massive loss. Ashley Young has turned into a key player, and I’ve a feeling that Van Gaal will tweak the formation to suit his wingers. West Brom are difficult to play against, and they have done all right against United recently. That said, they are safe from relegation - and an early United goal could open the floodgates. Prediction: Home win
